Only had the bike for 2 months and noticed a leak (battery acid)coming from under the drivers seat which is where the battery is located. A white like substance is forming on the swingarm, chain, and shock. Called dealership same day of notice. Problem not resolved as of yet.

Let this be known, this is happining to hundreds of r6 owners. We will be heard. This could cause major parts to fail. I dont want to see a death because of this!!!!!no safety defect mentioned.

The battery leaked acid (yamaha r6 2002). *nlm.

Battery leaked onto the inside of motorcycle corroding everything, i have never used a battery charger and have never dropped or laid down the bike. It also has never been trucked or trailed.

Despite countless calls to customer relations, yamaha continues to deny knowledge of the battery leak problem that has plagued r6 motorcycle owners around the country. Instead, they accuse owners of using third party .battery chargers and leave them with over $1700 worth of damage.owners lucky enough to be within the 1 year warranty will have the parts replaced at yamaha's expense.then later experience the problem after the warranty has expired.in which case, they are left with the bill.my acid leak was extensive covering the back half of the bike.i was unaware of the leak, because i was not aware to what battery acid looked like; i assumed it was dirt off the road.i was informed of it by a mechanic who was changing my oil.the damages were tallied by my local yahama dealer (motofixx) at around $2200, which yamaha refused to pay since the bike is over the 1 year warranty.this is a common problem, as told to me by the mechanic, the yamaha dealership, and many many complaints on the internet. The battery in question is produced by gs battery1999 - 2000 part #gt12b-42001 - 2001 part #gt9b-4new battery part # gt9b-4-ci am now trying to figure out how to fight back and make yamaha pay for the damages they have inflicted upon my bike due to their manufacturing defects.

The battery has been leaking acid onto my swingarm, rear shock, and chain.yamaha is covering this under the 1-year warranty, but this has happened to hundreds of people who own a yzf-r6 and a recall has not been performed.i am absolutely outraged.

Yzfr6 model.the vehicle was park and he noticed that the battery acid had leak out on the motorcyle. Dealer is aware of the problem. Tsyamaha would not replaced parts damaged by battery acid.vehicle still under warranty.

2002 yamaha r6 street motorcycle - oem battery begins to leak acid on suspension components and drivetrain components (swingarm, shock, shock linkage, left footpeg, gear shift lever, drive chain, gearshift linkage, subframe, rear fender)this is a common issue with this model. Many reports at www.houndheaven.com/batteryleak.htm. Reported to always happen around 2000miles on vehicle. Many reports that when manufacturer replaces damaged components, it happens again after another 2000 miles and many times this occurs after factory warranty has expired, leaving customer with damaged components and a large repair bill.

While driving noticed batterywas leaking.

Battery leaked, replaced, but damaged many other parts not replaced.

Battery acid leaked all over the swing arm, chain, shock reservoir, and rear shock.bike is only 3months old w/3500 miles.heard several other people complain abouth this same problem.

No description given.nlm

Battery leaked causing swing arm, chain, and shock damage. Battery is leaking most likly due to over charging by the motorcycle, creating a fire hazard.

Battery leakage:after driving motorcycle around oahu for about an hour on 15 aug 02, i stopped for food.upon returning to my motorcycle, i did a quick walk around inspection and noticed a white, crusty spot located on the left top side of the swingarm.upon further inspection, i saw that there was battery acid dripping from the battery box under the seat area. Acid was dripping on swingarm, rear suspension spring, battery box, and chain.corrosion on swingarm, spring, or chain could lead to structure failure, resulting in loss of control and an accident.having done further research into this matter, it appears that there are lots of other r6 owners having this same problem.it has been addressed to yamaha by many of them, and yamaha has and hasn't replaced the damaged parts, depending on dealership.apparently, the sealed batteries are faulty, and gas pressure builds up inside of it until it ruptures and leaks battery acid all over.this is a potentially severe issue that must be addressed by nhtsa in order for yamaha to recall all of the affected batteries.

Yamaha vstar 1100.the starters on the 1100 vstar from years 1999 to 2002 are defective and fail.the symptom is that the engine will clunk and wheeze as it attempts to start.there is a defective dog ear inside the starter that shears off and causes the end cap to twist putting the starter in a bind.the consumer is frequently unaware of the failure and continues to grind the starter into complete failure.the issue is that yamaha is aware of the issue as they have replaced numerous 1999-2002 starters, and went on to redesign it on the 2003 model.many times the starter will start the bike in this binding condition until the warrantee runs out.soon after this happens, the starter fails all together leaving many consumers a $1300.00 replacement bill.the most comprehensive tracking of this issue resides delphi forums, a web based informational refrence where owners of these motorcycles gather to discuss several issues concerning the bikes.the link concerning the starter failure, can be found here http://forums.delphiforums.com/star_riders/messages?msg=42152.1please assist by applying pressure to yamaha concerning this issue.it is a known problem of accelerated obselesence, that they are attempting to keep quiet.

I have a 2002 yamaha v-star 1100 classic motorcycle.the starter is beginning to fail due to a design flaw.the problem is well documented but yamaha will only replace it at the consumer's cost.

The motorcycle was havingstarter problems. The starter frame was starting to twist which caused the clutch bearing to fail (2002 yamaha xvs11ap-r).

Bolts holding starter to engine are twisted along with internal components of vehicles starter motor.*la

Defective manufacturer product on 2002 yamaha vstar 1100 silverado motorcycle

During normal start up of my 2002 yamaha v star 1100 classic, there was a loud backfire a popping sound and the motorcycle did not start. Another attempt to start had no result. Inspecting the starter i could see the bolts were twisted. I had to have it repaired at a cost of $164.00.*la

2002 yamaha vstar 1100 silverado starter problem. Twisted bolts, kickback, clunking noise on startup and sometimes shutdown. Follow yamaha starting recommendations so i am not at fault. Yamaha has even came out with a beefier starter, but still denies there is a problem with their design and product.

2002 yamaha v star 1100 custommy starter is failing due to an apparent design flaw.if when trying to start the bike the starter fails to start, it many times will "kick back" violently resulting in the starter case itself rotating against itself. This is quite obvious by looking at the external bolts that hold the 2 end caps and center section together. The alignment will be off from slightly to a rather large amount. The bolts themselves will no longer be straight but bent.i am a member of the international star riders association which has a discussion forum on the internet.this problem has been around since the 1999 model year and has been discussed in great detail there.a poll was conducted of members and out of 737 votes tallied 192 had the problem and either replaed it or were in process of trying to get it replaced.that is a 26% failure rate which in my opinion isn't good.so far yamaha has denied there is a problem even though they redesigned the starter for the 2003 models and all old starters are being replaecd with the new model.i only have 5000 miles on my bike in a 2 year period. When i contacted the dealer they said it was out of warranty and $316 would buy a new starter plus labor to install.a call to yamaha motor corp was like talking to a wall.i have never had or even heard of a starter failure like this before.i hope that you caninvstigate this matter and obtain a favorable resolution for the owners of these motorcycles.please contact me for much additional information.

I have a 2002 yamaha v-star 1100 that the starter bolts are just starting to twist. Apperently this is a common problem with all 1999-2002 yamaha v-star 1100 motorcycles.in model year 2003 yamaha redesigned the starter to prevent kickback from damaging the starter.since the older starters don't have this design, they are damaged every time that the engine kicks back. Yamaha claims that the failures are because of operator error in starting the motorcycle, but if that is so, how come the redesign of the starter in 2003. I belong to the international star riders association, www.star-riders.org, and we conducted a poll of current v-star 1100 owners with starter problems.this web address, http://people.delphiforums.com/dadbenny/documents the problems with these starters.yamaha needs to issue a recall and replace the older style starters with the newly redesigned starters.$319 to replace a starter on a new bike is rather steep.here is a excerpt from one of our members.yamaha says it has a torque limiter built into it and there is a rough diagram of it in the tech bullentin. The outsides were beefed up, but the larger head is necessary to house the torque limiter. Bear in mind this doesn't eliminate kickback only helps ease the pain it causes to the one-way starter clutch and starter. The "official" reason from yamaha's rep for the mid-atlantic for the new starter is telling. He claims the original starter is fine. I asked him why, if there is nothing wrong with the original starter and starter clutch did they spend the time and money to redesign it. His reply, and i quote, "customer convenience".

The atv experiences carburetor "vapor lock" causing the the atv to stall and sputter. The atv start dispensing fuel out a overflow tube that exit down on the floorboard causing a fire hazard. This is happenning all over the country to owners of this atv . Concerned about fire hazard to owners

On this the first year of the new model of the yamaha grizzly 660, due to the design of the engine compartment, there is a problem with the engine vapor locking due to the gasoline in the fuel tank and carburetor boiling. What happens is when you are doing some slow technical trail riding, there doesnt seem to be sufficient ventilation to keep the engine compartment cool. Because of this, the fuel actually boils. You can take the gas cap off the fuel tank and hear the pressure release, then look in the gas tank and actually see, and hear the gasoline bubbling (boiling).

This atv will boil the gas in the carburator and gas tank. This causes gas to come out of the carburator vent tube and drip onto floorboards. Boiling gas in the carburator can also cause a vapor lock condition which is could cause a loss of power at a very dangerous moment such as climbing a steep hill. Atvs of this model are having this problem all over the country but yamaha refuses to acknowledge that there is a design flaw. Yamaha blames it on east coast fuel. Even though owners of this atv in states other than e. Coast states have reported this problem. Sorry if this is not the correct forum to wage this type complaint.

My yamaha grizlly as well as many others have been experiencing fuel boiling and vapor lock.the mfgr has stated that it is a gas issue.hard to believe since it is happening across many states.i can be severely injured if it vapor locks while climbing a hill and stalling.major safety issue

I own a 2002 yamaha grizzly 660 atv.there seems to be a tremendous amount of heat generated by this machine causing the fuel in the carburetor to heat up which then causes the machine to vapor lock(sputter, cut out & back fire) & not run properly.this has happened to my machine a number of times and most recently on march 1st of 2003. I have been fortunate in that it has not happened at a critical time during riding ie. Going up an incline.

I have experienced problems with the operation of my four wheeler both related to a near stalling problem when going up an incline as well as boiling gas in my gas tank.i was not injured, however if the machine had not recovered from sputtering and losing all power i fear i may have been injured badly by rolling over backwards.as i mentioned i have also expereinced boiling gas coming from either my gas tank or my carburetor, not sure which.if gas gets hot enough to boil i am sure the flash point is not that far off.i have read countless accounts of other 660 grizzly owners on various web site's forum sections under "yamaha" related to atv's such as www.highlifter.com, www.atvnation.com, and www.atvconnection.com.there have been minor injuries as a result of these same mechanical failures as i have experienced.god forbid that my wife should experience the same problems that i have while she is riding the machine over the same type of riding conditions, which were very novice riding conditions, unless there is a failure of the machine to operate.something needs to be done about this problem immediately before someone is badly injured or killed.

My 2002 yamaha grizzly 660 atv overheats, causing gas to boil in the carburetor causes the atv to stall (from fuel starvation), thus losing forward momentum which can cause death or serious injury to the operator.

Consumer received a recallfortransmission failure. He tookmotorcycle todealer, and was toldthey didnot have the parts.consumer stated that when he rode themotorcycle it made a popping noise.he was afraid to ride it,and motorcycle was toweddealer for repair. Dealer told him that they could not stop the popping noise, but to ride the motorcyclefor a while and the popping noise may stop. Consumer felt that since he received a recall notice dealer should repair motorcycle or find out when the partswill come in.

Law offices of lane ferdinand is writing on behalf of mr. Steeg as notification of an accident in which the clutch cable bracket released from the holder because the small metal keeper tab which is intended to secure the end of the clutch cable to the clutch assembly, simply bent open allowing the cable to release from its attachment causing the operator to lose control of the vehicle which was in motion at 25 mph.the ensuing vehicle crash resulted in damaged to the vehicle and injured rider.information gathered since the accident indicates that this problem has occurred to other owners of the same model motorcycle. With in 600 miles my clutch plates broke, yamaha replaced them, but they told me operater error six months later the bike was in the shop again.i asked them to check a noise in the clutch and they played it off later the bike locked up and i cracked my skull and broke my collarbone plus road rashup my leg and up my back after this i took the bike to an expert the yamaha dealer knew him and lissened the dealer took the whole clucth and offered to replace the clutch plates the bike is(model-fzs 10ps fz1).

Motorcycle, yamaha v-star 1100 classic 2002 with 23,000 miles on it or less when the transmission started whining , clicking and grinding noises when you de-accelerated the throttle of the engine .this first happened around the 1st week of august 2006. Onthe 23 august 2006 i removed the rear wheel to inspect or to see what was causing the noises. When the driveshaft was removed from the yoke of the transmission a nut and thick thrush washer was lying inside the yoke, broke off from the middle drivegear shaft. Further inspection of the nut, revealed that 3/4"s of the threaded end of the middle drivegear shaft was still in the nut that sheared or broke off the end of the middle drivegear shaft that secures the yoke to the middle drivegear shaft. Only 3 or 4threads were left on the broken end of the middle drivegear shaft . Without this thrush washer and nut to secure the yoke to the middle drivegear shaft, the middle drive gear shaft could move in and out of the transmission 1 to 13/4 inches or more, and the only thing that stopped it from moving out more was the main driveshaft to the rear end of the cycle.. It was lucky for me or any one else out there with this problem that they didn't get injured or killed, because if this washer or nut had ever lodged into the yoke when it was turning, it would of locked the rear wheel up and causing the motorcycle to skid out of control and go down and crash and at any speed someone is going to get injured bad!!now to repair this problem is not a easy procedure. It requires whole engine/tranny removal, engine disassemble and engine crank case cracked or split open for accessibility to the transmission parts. Parts replaced would have to be determined, after inspection of the effective area of the middle drive gear shaft and the middle driven shaft and other connecting parts of these to middle shafts...i , in my opinion don't think this should of happen and should not be responsible for the cost repairing it.

It is with the utmost concern that i, as an owner of a 2002 yamaha road star, vin # [xxx], provide this communication to you and the yamaha motor corporation, usa.it has been known that a problem exists with the transmission, whereby at unexpected times the transmission locks, which can and has caused loss of control by the rider, thereby endangering the safety and life of the rider, passenger, and other vehicles, passengers, and pedestrians in the area. The occurrence of the transmission locking up has been documented by members of the road star riders forum http://forums.delphiforums.com/1602/messages), which is comprised of members and owners of road star motorcycles on a global basis.it is an on-going, repetitive incident and has happened as recently as april of 2003.this issue continues to be a matter of grievous anxiety and alarm to me as an owner of a road star motorcycle. Please respond immediately with what action is appropriate by the yamaha motor corporation, usa in order to ensure my safety and well being, while i am engaged in operating the aforementioned vehicle manufactured by your company. Thank you in advance for your consideration and action into this serious situation. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I am filing a complaint about persistent knock on my yamaha road star.i am growing concerned due to the number of reported catastrophic transmission failures that are currently surfacing.

Atv model yfm350; while riding atvlever popped out of gear into neutral.the atv continued forward over a hill, rolling over several times, throwing him off striking driver and then rolling again.please describe details.

Ltr fm richard brown asking the yamaha corp to look into the transmission failure on the yamaha roadstar midnight star motorcycle. *scc (2002 yamaha roadstar midnight star)

2002 yamaha roadstar - motor cyclei am concerned with the substantial number of transmission lock-up/ failures reported on this model. On my bike, i have encountered difficult gear engagement on several occasions. Additionally my bike has a strange engine knock/ tick.

Concern over potential for transmission failure on my 2002 yamaha roadstar motorcycle.several riders have reported transmission failure on this model roadstar that led to crashes.

Concerned with the frequency of transmission failures.hard shifting on my motorcycle.

Consumer stated that while driving the bike seat fell off.

Front brake is curently damaging the disk. & cost is unknown. Due to metal to metal contact, stopping in wet or dry weather is extreamley difficult.

The floorboard supports are made of subpar materials causing them to bend. The floorboard are sagging causing them to separate from the rear fenders. Once they fully separate they could cause the driver to lose control and crash. Yamaha has been contacted, they were replacing the floorboard supports with the new stronger supports that go on the 2003 yamaha grizzly. Now they refuse to replace them, according to them the support failure is caused by improperly placement of drivers foot on floorboard. This defect is being reported by grizzly owners nationwide.

2002 yamaha royal star venture, model xv1300.rear suspension failure.rear shock seal failed.shock lost air pressure and oil dumped in path of rear tire.nearly caused loss of control of motorcycle. This is the second failure of the rear shock on this vehicle.many other owners are having similar rear suspension failures.

Motorcycle model 650v-star; while driving mortorcycle, a clicking or rattlling sound would come fromrear end.this occurred with previous motorcycle which was exchanged for the present one.was urged bydealership not to ridemotorcycle until it was repaired.please describe details.

Rear shock failed on my 2002 yamaha royal star midnight venture. Caused very poor and unsafe handling characteristics including bottoming out and unstable cornering. It appears that this problem is fairly common with this model and yamaha is replacing with the same faulty designed rear shock.

The vehicle is an 850# touring motorcycle with airassisted suspension system.motorcycle's rear air-shock seal failed.dampening oil leaked out (onto garage floor).motorcycle's driveablity and handling was affected and the vehicle became very unstable on bumps and in turns.i nearly lost control when driving the bike to dealer to have the shock replaced. I believe the poor design of the shock has not been improved, as many owners have had them fail and replaced 2 or 3 times (as is documented in a yamaha venture owner's organization). The failure of the rear shock is an epidemic amongst 1999 ~ 2004 yamaha royal star venture's. It's a matter of time before someone is injured.the motorcycle's shock ablsorber assembly contains the rear spring and is an integral part of the suspension.the model of motorcycle is not listed in the nhtsa database.it is a 2002 xvz13 yamaha royal star venture.

Was in a gentle sweeping right hand turn at moderate speed when the front tire suddenly lost traction and slid. The tires were warmed up properly, and pressure had been set just before riding to manufacturer's recommended specs. Component failure led to a crash, with substantial injuries to me, there had ben no warning from the tires of traction issues prior to the incident, and the road surface in the corner was later found to be flawless. Many other purchasers of 2002 yamaha r1 have made the same comment. I can provide a list of these comments, taken from various motorcycle websites sorry, i inadvertantly left "front wheel drive" selected on the 'vehicle information' page, which is of course incorrect. Vehicle is rear wheel drive.

Tire lost traction unexpectedly...others have reported same problem.

Tires slide to easy, very dangerous when cornering on a motorcycle. Especially on a sport motorcycle.

At approximately 30mph, i was going around a slight curve when without warning the front tire started to slide towards the double yellow. I was able to stop the slide but ended up driving off the road to stop the bike. This is a street that i have traveled hundreds of times by both car and motorcycle and have never had a front end slide in the way this one did.

Tires are incompatiable with motorcycle and are serious hazard. Dunlop has agreed that yamaha should not have put this tire on this type of motorcycle. I have sworn witness that have spoke to dunlop representitives about this matter and they are all in agreement that this is not the correct tire for this motorcycle. Dunlop could not comment on why yamaha chose such a hazardous slippery tire for such a performance motorcycle.

Defective rear tire on yamaha motorcycle .*mrthere was problem calledblooming with the rear tires (cracking of the sidewalls).there is a tube inside the tire. The dealer stated that large amounts of static electricity can cause this problem. Consumer have to pay for problem, this id a costly procedure that the owner should not need to incur, because the problem is caused by a defect in the supplied tire.

Vehicle was driving on an incline, and suddenly rolled over on it's side. Upon attempting to roll vehicle back to an up right position it caught on fire.

Four weeks ago i was riding my 2002 yamaha virago 250 motorcycle at about 25mph on a one lane country road. I was in the middle of a gentle curve when the bike suddenly accelerated and headed straight rather than bearing left on the curve. Although i tried my hardest to lean left it felt like the bike was speeding out of control and locked in the straight position. There was no shoulder and i ran into the guard rail. I'm fortunate that my broken arm and leg, crushed knee and elbow will heal in time. I don't know what caused the sudden acceleration.

While driving at low speedsconsumer heard a clicking noise in the rear end of the motorcycle.the motorcycle was takento repair shop for new tires, and the mechanic determined that the inside of the hub broke.

April 2002 purchased a new motorcyle and had problem with it 1 month after. Put in shop and has been in and out several times only to be tould it was and is a factory defect and am paying on it monthly with no results on problem and i am in need of action on this problem.
