Starter when trying to start would not turn over motor, but the starter would turn over. I have found that yamaha knows of this issue it has happened to anyone that owns a yamaha vstar, 650cc and 1100cc, the repair bill cost between $900.00 to $1,200 , and even after repairs bye even dealers you can have this same issue again. I know one man that had it happen 3 times, now he is selling the bike after it's fixed again, help us please.

My speedometer stopped working on my 2006 vstar 1100 cruiser motorcycle. When it was worked on, it was found that the retaining nut had come loose from the drive shaft along with some washers. This occured at approx. 9600 miles.the consequence was that it was fixed without a major replacement but it was a costly mechanics bill over $400.00.

While driving my 2006 yamaha vstar 1100 silverado motorcycle, the nut attached to the midshaft (drivetrain) broke off and the broken nut/shaft thread apparently tumbled around within the drivetrain area, causing the drivetrain to temporarily lock up / bind while riding 25 mph. This also caused failure to the shaft and speedometer sensor. The motorcycle is less than two years old and has approximately 10,000 miles.this failure could possibly cause serious injury or death, especially while in a turn or at highway speed.

Purchased motorcycle 5/2011 three months later it started to make a loud noise when decelerating. Its makes this noise when motorcycle is moving but engine is not under load. I took the bike to two different dealers and both of them said it was the middle gear set. The repair cost was $2300. This is crazy. Three months riding for $2300. I just bought it. After some research i found out i'm not the only one.it seems this is a problem with these bikes but nobody is doing anything about it. I can't afford to fix this. Please help!!!

The contact owns a 2006 yamaha xvs-1100 v-star silverado motorcycle. The contact was driving approximately 65 mph when a bolt fractured from the middle gear drive shaft and began rattling around inside the yoke of the u-joint as the bolt lodged inside the yoke. The vehicle was taken to an authorized yamaha dealer and they refused to repair the vehicle. The dealer advised him that there was a problem with the engine and that the repairs were entirely too costly to repair. The contact stated that he repaired the vehicle himself and replaced the middle gear shaft, u-joint, yoke and caskets at a cost of $800. The manufacturer was not contacted to report the failure. The vin was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 20,000.

I'm experiencing a severe whining noise on deceleration especially in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. Contacted the yamaha dealership where i purchased the motorcycle and they have never heard of the problem. Upon researching this problem on the internet i realize there are other owners of this motorcycle with the same problem. The nut connecting the transmission and driveshaft becomes loose and the adjoining gears do not mesh properly and cause a whining noise. I brought my bike to another mechanic and low and behold the nut was loose in the power train connection. How is it that yamaha has no knowledge of the problem but internet searches reveals 2006 vstar owners are experiencing this problem? thank you

Rode bike about 3 hours prior with no indication of problem.after parked the 3 hours i heard a loud whine/howl coming from middle of bike.dealer mechanic discovered middle drive yoke just about sheared off the shaft.visual inspection shows about 50% or more sheared off.from the list it appears to be a trend.

06 vstar 1100 classic, 12,126 miles - purchased new from showroom floor feb. 14 of 2006 -mileage was gentle - not abusive/hard5/24/2008 at 7:30 returning home from running errands.turning left from dead stop at an intersection, felt a shudder in bike, heard a pop.after completion of the turn, loud noise, grinding at deceleration.fortunately was less than 1/8 mile from home and could coast in.on taking apart on 5/24/06 discovered that the retaining nut on the mid drive shaft inside the u joint had sheared/twisted off.nut was lying loose inside the u bolt.on examining the bolt you could see the cracks, where the1/2" shaft had discolorations and a what little bit of shaft had been holding for quite some time.dropped the rear end, wheel, tire, pivot arms, rear drive shaft assembly and was able to remove the ujoint.after removing the old section of bolt, straightening the thread, replace nut on remaining shaft.drilled and tapped the bolt, inserted bolt.welded bolt head to the retaining nut. Replaced all parts, removed. Work completed by two mechanics who will be my hero's.yamaha does not accept that the drive shafts are failing.if this had happened while traveling on the expressway to work at 55/66/75 mph or away from home the consequences would have been much graver.

2006 v-star 1100. Shaft problem it busted in half as i was pulling out of my driveway. Motorcycle company i took it to said they have never seen anything like this. Had no warranty and the dealer would not cover.updated ivoq 08/27/10

At first i had a very loud whining sound which came on all of a sudden. I took it to the yamaha dealer which he heard at first but then it wentaway. He said they had a bulletin from yamaha about greasing the splines in the drive train which he did, even though he couldn't duplicate the noise.ipicked the bike up and at around 10 miles later the bike started to have a slight vibration followed by a loud bang and a very loud rattle.the loud rattle was the result of the threaded shaft and nut rattling around in the drive shaft compartment. Luckily it did not wedge it self in the shaft drive and lock up the rear wheel resulting in loss of control of the bike. The bike is now in the shop and i am looking at a 2500 dollar repair bill. After this happened to me i started looking on line and noticed the exact same thing has occurred with others on this same bike.

Middle drive shaft snapped off releasing retaining the nut into universal joint. The retaining nut could have moved out of the universal joint and jammed the universal joint resulting in the rear wheel locking and loss of control of the motorcycle. In addition to control loss, major gearbox damage would have occurred.

I own a 2006 v star 1100 that i purchased used last year.a week and a half ago i was leaving work and heard what sounded like metal spinning whenever i let off the throttle i took it to my dealer and they said that the drive shaft splines needed greased and the rear tire was bad.i took it back a week later and had them grease the shaft and change the rear brake pads because they said that was causing the noise.when i left i noticed the noise was still there but now my speedometer and odometer wasn't working.when i got home i tracked down the sensor removed it and noticed that the middle drive shaft nut had sheered off and was laying between the two hog heads.i then contacted the dealer and advised them of the problem and showed them in the engine diagram book, they had no clue.i then advised them to look at the bike that was in with mine the previous night because she was having the same type of problem.i'm just amazed that me a non mechanic found the problem in less than 5 minutes.it's even more discouraging that i only have 10,800 miles on the bike and was told to ride it into the shop each time with the noise it was making.please help with this, yamaha has been made aware of this and there response to the problem is unacceptable, they have said it may only happen to a few bikes and that's ok with them.well it's not with us!!!!

Yamaha v star xvs1100 middle gear shaft breaks off at nut securing u-joint assembly to shaft. The gear shaft broke with out warning while traveling at about 30 mph. The bike has 60k miles. The nut can get lodged between ujoint and swingarm pivot bolt this can cause the drive shaft to lock up, also locking up the rear tire, sending the motorcycle in to a uncontrolled skid. I know of 4 broken shafts within last 6 months. Old parts are available.

Middle driven shaft retaining bolt sheared off while riding down the highway.

Driving 60 mph on hwy18 the bike started vibrating and the speedometer started bouncing, pull the clutch in and all problems go away. The "middle gear" out put shaft of the transmission snapped off inside the nut that holds the drive shaft joke on. To replace the broken out put shaft the engine and transmission needs to be taken apart. $2500.00 repair at the dealer. I found a do it yourself fix online so i disassembled the bike drilled and tapped the end of the out put shaft installed a thinner nut and screwed a bolt into the hole in the end of the shaft that i drilled and taped. If the nut and broken end of the shaft would have got jammed between the u-joint yokes it would have locked up the rear tire. It damaged both yokes and the u-joint before getting the bike stopped.ser # [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
