Electrical failure, suspension failure, leakage to air bag sensor, software problems

While driving at @35mph on a busy city street the car decelerated suddenly without warning and the drivers instrument panel went out, giving me, the driver a blank screen. Car would not accelerate and slowed to about 5mph. No previous indication of this happening. Spoke with 2 volvo service departments and both providers stated this has happened to other cars before. This is a huge safety defect especially on a brand new car. What if i had been on a freeway going 70mph and the car decelerates all of a sudden? very concerned that my children and i will die in a crash getting rear ended on the freeway if this should happen again.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently. The contact mentioned that the instrument panel failed to illuminate and provided reading levels for the vehicles functions. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where the failure was undetermined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 31,000. The vin was not provided.the consumer stated the vehicle was repaired in october 2016. The dealer believed there was a glitch in the computer. However, the same problem occurred on december 18, 2016. The dealer believed it was the fuel pump. Updated 02/06/17.the consumer requested an update.

During driving on a local road at approx. 45 mph, the electronic dashboard disappeared (so you have no visibility to speed, fuel, warnings), the car rapidly decelerated to 10 mph and wouldn't go any faster and all non-steering controls (radio, ac, navigation, etc.) froze. It has remained that way since even after power cycling.apparently this can be temporarily fixed by disconnecting the 2 batteries. But it can happen again with no warning. This happened to me and has happened to others i know.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle came to a complete stop on its own. The contact managed to steer the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle could not be turned off and the gear could not be placed into park. The vehicle eventually shut off on its own. The contact waited a while before restarting the vehicle and then drove to montrose volvo of cleveland (9600 brookpark rd building c, cleveland, oh 44129, (216) 351-9999). The dealer replaced the electronic control module (ecm). The failure recurred and the dealer replaced and reprogrammed the ecm again. The contact was in the process of a buyback claim. The manufacturer initially denied the claim, but were currently reviewing the claim. The vehicle was left at the dealer. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 12,500.

On today, i was driving with my young children in our 2016 volvo xc90 when suddenly the instrumentation panel went blank and the car slowed down dramatically in the middle ofrush hour traffic. The car started to crawl at approximately 5-10 mph. We pulled over to the side of the road, powered off the car, restarted it and the problem still persisted. While depressing the accelerator pedal from a stop, the vehicle failed to respond and the vehicle stalled without warning. Each time we attempted to accelerate, the car failed to respond and seemed as if it were going to lose total power. As semi-trucks and other vehicles were traveling behind us, our family vehicle was in great danger of being hit. I called volvo on call and they remained on the phone with us until we were able to slowly exit the interstate and drive to a secure location. The approximate maximum speed that we drove was no more than 5-10 mph. A tow service was dispatched to our location and the car was then towed to the volvo dealership. While this is indeed a safety concern, it was a very traumatic experience for me and my young children.

The "auto braking" function related to the passive collision avoidance activates with no other object in the automobiles path.it has activated 6 times in the past 4 months.the car went into the dealership in september 2016 and they said they could not replicate the incident (not surprising as it happens on a "random" basis.in the past 10 days it activated 3 times.it was taken to the dealership on 9/30/16 and is still there.i also have a colleague with the same vehicle (inscription trim package) and they are experiencing the same random "auto brake" activity.it has done it at low speed and medium speeds in residential areas, as well as at 60 mph on the freeway.it has activated while going straight, going down a hill with no visible car or object in site, and while turning.very concerning and it is an immediate safety hazard.

The lcd instrument panel randomly goes blank.this happens while driving at various speeds.so, no speedometer, turn signals, gas gauge etc. Can be seen. Volvo claims a software update should fix the issue but it has not. It has been ongoing for almost one year.

The touch screen, which controls both basic and complex functions of the car, is so distracting to use that until saturday it was an accident waiting to happen. On saturday that accident did happen. The problem is that the touch screen is needed to control basic and frequent functions such as climate control and the radio. Merely changing the temperature requires as much attention - and diversion from driving - as using a cell phone might. While changing the temperature my wife sideswiped a guard rail on a country road.fortunately the accident was not too bad but i've been worried about the distraction caused by this control screen during these most basic functions. I have, for example, stopped choosing radio stations on the screen as it requires too much attention and have found that just turning off the air conditioning requires far more attention than is safe.

The car turned off completely in the middle of the road; the speed slowed down (the car was off) and had to pull to the side of the road.

When driving my volvo after it has rained and i begin to break, while on a road with a minimal decline, rain water pours into the cabin. I was told by volvo service technicians the water is not able to channel through the sunroof channels correctly due to corrosion or clogging in the drainage tubes/sunroof tray assembly. The water pours into the cabin near the intellisafe/rearview mirror area. This event creates a distraction to the driver especially if breaking while on a right hand curve as the water pours out towards the drivers field of vision. For fear of water damaging any electrical safety components, or the integrity of the interior materials i pull over to dry these components. This event occurs when ever it rains.

Electrical failure, suspension failure, leakage to air bag sensor, software problems

Rear left door spontaneously unlatched and opened while driving with 6-year-old daughter in adjacent seat. Door will subsequently not latch.

2016 xc90, engine is decelerating on street road going from 40-45 miles per hour, to 10 miles per hoursuddenly and quickly.with closure of back door where there is no lock button to hit by accident, car is locking all doors by itself when closing the passenger door.i am aware of babies being locked in the cars due to this fault in system and my pet was locked in due to the locks locking on their own when i closed passenger door which does not have a lock button i could have hit by accident. Front end crash going off and slightly braking on highway and on city streets when it should not, nothing in front of car numerous times and is not going off when it should for instance someone cutting car off within 2 feet several times.dashboard screen goes blank while driving meaning you can not see speed, etc..literally every function on car randomly does not work.battery/alternator is not recharging/maintaining charge long enough to keep auto start/stop engine feature working, which means 3.5 miles more per gallon for me with my extremely careful, not riding gas pedal into lights.some say foot detection module is draining rear battery.it has been worked on 7 times with less than 5,000 miles.others online have described same issues.i have invoices of taking into dealer each time.i have never reported any faulty product but am very concerned for safety features will randomly and actually do not work while driving.you ask when started- vehicle purchased in april 2016 and has been from the beginning with no remedies. I have gotten extremely low battery signals and warnings that my car will shut down in a few minutes.they seem to have taken away that warning in the latest software update because my car has less charge at times then when i originally received the warning.in other words, i no longer get the warning even when my battery is very low.

09/24/2016 when starting car noted driver display blank.car speed reduced to 5-10 mph.unable to accelerate on city streets, had to pull-over and await tow to dealership. Initially delaer thought to be software issue but has been unable to definitively identify issue. Volvo engineer en route. As of 09/28 no solution.

While driving between cincinnati, oh and nashville, tn, we stopped in carollton, ky to refuel at a local gas station.upon attempting to open the fuel door, the door would not unlock.there is no button or switch to use to open the fuel door on this vehicle.despite several attempts to turn the lock and unlock the car, the fuel door would not open.we contacted volvo oncall, who admitted this was a known issue but they did not have solution.the only offer for assistance was to use the key remote to lock and unlock the car 3 times in an attempt to reset the electronics.this car also comes with a buttonless "key tag," which is what we were using at the time.volvo had no awareness of this key tag and had no other solution to offer.given our proximity to louisville, we agreed to attempt the drive to louisville and left the car with friends while we rented a car and drove to nashville to get the key fob with buttons.then drove back to louisville to try the lock-unlock option to no avail.we then took the car to the local volvo dealer where the door was mechanically opened and the lock mechanism was disassembled so that the car could be refueled.though a known issue by volvo, they have not communicated with the dealers as this car had a 10,000 mile service 2 days prior to this event.the inability to fuel the vehicle and cause people to be stranded should prompt a recall.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. While depressing the accelerator pedal from a stop, the vehicle failed to respond. In addition, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 3,000.

While the car was running in my garage and the front driver side door closed, i believe i put it in reverse then went to open the front door to see if my daughter was tightened in her car seat, the car didn't move.i am not sure if i put it back in park but after i took my foot off the brake, it didn't move.after a few seconds and my feet and body completely out of the car, it started to go back and almost ran me over.luckily i jumped back in the volvo truck and the door crashed into the garage.this is a brand new truck and has been in the shop with some recalls on the computer system a few weeks prior.the computer system has shut down several times while driving and i believe the long delay in going back might have to do with something with the electronics/motor.there is no way one should be able to completely get out of a car without knowing it is in gear.

1) adaptive cruise control suddenly shuts off while driving on the highway, error message appears on the screen: "windscreen sensor, sensor blocked, see owner's manual", the appearance of the sensor on the outside of the car appears clean and even after scrubbing the sensor area the error still occurs.the car has been repaired for this same problem over 5 times including total replacement of the the windscreen sensors, with the problem still persisting.2) dashboard went blank and computer rebooted while driving.

Car was having issues with speedometer screen and center console screens. Screen would blank out when navigation system was in use and vehicle was moving. This would happen twice and system would normalize. Several weeks ago this happened and my husband and i smelled a weird odor and then smoke began bellowing out center console. Unit was turned off and dealer contacted. Vehicle was brought in but after three weeks still has issues.wentto pick up car on 12/5 only to find vehicle was having issue with retaining a fully charged battery. We were told al of these issues are due to software updates but to have speedometer go out while in use and to smoke is not safe

Around 10.30 am on sunday, 26th june 2016, i was driving on i-95 (near stamford ct) with my family when the car suddenly lost power, slowed down dramatically in the middle of i-95 and started to crawl at 10 miles/hour. We were in danger of being hit by a number of vehicles while i negotiated to exit the highway on exit 9 and pulled over into a side street. The instrumentation panel of the car had blanked out. The car could only crawl at about 10 miles/hour. It would not shift to higher gear even in manual mode. I called the volvo on call and they advised me to switch off the car, exit the car and then re start the car after five minutes. I did that and the problem still persisted. I some how drove the car to the nearest volvo dealership (stamford volvo) which was closed on sunday. Dropped the car off in the lot, rented a car and drove 200 miles back to boston.

The dashboard instrument panel suddenly went blank on a city street and the car could not accelerate more than about 5-10 miles per hour. It's frightening to imaging what would have happened if this occurred on a highway.volvo's towing company put rear wheels on ground and damage all wheel drive system during towing. After stayed at dealership for a month but within 48 hours after pickup, a warning message "all wheel drive service required" popped up.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. While driving 45 mph, the vehicle decelerated to 5 mph and accelerated again without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle was equipped with an autonomous braking system. The vehicle was towed to midwestern auto group (614-889-2571, located at 6335 perimeter loop rd, dublin, oh 43017) where the software was updated. The failure recurred at 75 mph without warning. The contact called byers volvo at 614-864-0780 (located at 301 n. Hamilton road, columbus, oh 43213) and scheduled an appointment for a software update. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 220. The vin was unknown.

Vehicle experiencing sun roof leakages during rain or snow. This makes driving dangerous when it is raining or snowing. Defects due to poor sunroof design and components causing water to enter vehicle when raining or snowing. Discussions panels on line identifies other owners experiencing this problem with no concrete solutions as most are trials and errors.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. The contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle in park assist mode, the vehicle accelerated in reverse independently and backed into a tree without warning. The contact did not sustain injuries and a police report was not filed. The contact's husband drove the vehicle to smothers european volvo cars 2881 corby ave, santa rosa, ca 95407 to be inspected. The dealer was unable to diagnose the vehicle. A corporate representative was then sent to the dealer and determined that no safety error had occurred on the vehicle. They determined the cause of the accident to be human error. The manufacturer had been notified and offered no assistance with the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.bf

We were travelling on the freeway when all the displays went blank. The entertainment, gauges, etc. On the freeway! i was afraid the engine would shutoff on us. Immediately i called the volvo on call and explain the situation to the operator and all he could do was apologize and offer a tow truck, if needed.once the system came back on, the hi-beamand the child door locks were activated! the rear passengers had a difficult time opening the door because we did not know what happened.in my opinion, this is a very serious issue because the entire car is controlled by a software and there is no manual bypass or backup system to ensure the safety of the occupants. We've had this car for about a year and have taken it in for software issues, including, but not limited to: blind spot monitoring failure, front collision sensor failure, navigation system failure, all sensors failure, warning lights/signals failure, backup camera failure and panoramic sunroof failure.each time we've taken it in, they always told us it was a software updates. Really? software updates for each and every time??

Turn signal not stop afterblinkinglights

At least 3 times, my car has braked itself (at around 50 miles per hour) when there was nothing in front of me. This was very unsafe- if someone had been behind me, i would have been hit. This seems to be the collision mitigation system engaging for no reason. The dealer has said they "fixed it" (don beyer volvo) but i believe they have just turned the system pretty much off so that it now would not stop if there was a real object in front of me. I had a loaner in which the systemwas still on and mine no longer works like that. I think they don't really have a fix for this so they just turn it off in the cars that have this defect. This is a major safety issue.also, have had the navigation system go blank while drivingthen it shows that you are somewhere else and get stuck there for days. (many other problems also, a noise in the seat (second row) that they maybe fixed after three times but now the second row seat does not work properly (got stuck out of the socket but we got it back in and i think this is a safety issue.)

When we were driving on street, the dash board black out and the car completely stop. Can't tell what speed, and all other warning signal. Re-started the car but only can gomiles/hr the dashboard still black out.get towed to the volvo dealer . They still can't find outwhat is problem. Search internet and more than 10 people has similar issue.

The suv has had lots of problems with the engine. The engine has stopped without warning numerous times while in motion. It even stopped one time on the highway. The vehicle loses power in an instance and few times we have had to tow the vehicle to our house and to the dealership for repair. Even though this problem has occured over and over (which the dealership has attributed to the pistons misfiring), the dealership can not seem to repair the issue. We have asked dealership/volvo to buy back the vehicle as it is not driveable at all. Everytime we get the vehicle returned after the repair from the dealership, between 100-300 miles the engine light comes on again and makes the suv not driveable. We have complained numerous times to the dealership to no avail. The service manager has confided in us that this issue has occured on almost all the volvo xc90 from 2016 and onwards.

My husband, mother-in-law, and three year old son were driving in the vehicle saturday, february 18th, 2017. As my husband turned down our road he stated he smelled smoke, but didn't realize it was coming from the vehicle. He pulled into our driveway and parked. They then saw smoke seeping out of the hood. My mother-in-law exited and my husband removed my son from the burning car. I came outside to greet them and witnessed this. He then opened the hood and there were significant flames on the driver side posterior area of the engine. He ran for our fire extinguisher while i called 911. He put out the fire with the extinguisher and the fire department arrived within five minutes. They inspected, opened the top cover of the battery and disconnected it. They reported to us that it appeared to be an electrical fire occurring at the area of the battery.after inspection by volvo and our insurance company, the damage was determined to be caused by rodents chewing on the electrical wiring inside the engine causing the shortage and subsequent fire. The damage was valued and paid at a cost of $11,000 (covered by insurance after deductible). There are multiple articles indicating attraction of rodents to the newer soy-based electrical wire insulation. The attached file outlines details -1.after a recent car wash at a shell service stationā€¦..april 5,2021, upon starting the vehicle ā€“ the computerized dashboard displayed erratic and incomplete information.it attempted to indicate multiple system failures ā€“ eg brakes, suspension, and others too garbled to understand.the entire driverā€™s console and information center display which were designed to show all of the vehicle operating modes and driver information were compromised and not functioning correctly.the start/stop switch would no longer shut the engine down.i could not get the vehicle to shift out of park. I found myself quite concerned about a highly computerized vehicle now running with no apparent operator control.i could not be certain whether the engine was being cooled properly from its electrical fans because the cabin was becoming uncomfortably hot.none of the environmental controls worked.even the electric windows were affected.there were no engine safety indicators of any kind visible working to ensure electrical, engine oil pressure, coolant temperatureā€¦.none of the other operator information systems were working properly and the engine still could not be shut down.i found myself uncomfortable getting out of the vehicle since it has so many self-driving, collision avoidance steering and braking functions that could be affected.i did not want to risk being run over by my own car.nor, could i allow the vehicle to move, possibly on its ownā€¦so i sat in it for about 3 hours sweating while waiting for a volvo tow service to arrive. The tow operator was somehow able to get the gear shift to move and was able to back the vehicle out to the street and onto his truck.he was also unable to shut the engine down and towed it to the neillo volvo dealership about 3.5 miles away, here in sacramento ca.i had deep concerns about safety with this vehicle being towed with the engine still running.all of the instrumentation remained unusable. The consumer stated after the sunroof clogged d

Dashboard went black and computer rebooted three times while driving.engine was not affected.no speedometer and gauges, as they are all part of the electronic dashboard.

Within a month of purchase issues with the cargo door started, door would not close, parked in my garage unloading groceries, called our volvo service manager repeatedly for help,no answer, it finally closed an hour later.then the battery low charge light kept coming on, finally took it in for both issues, they updated, showed me that the door worked and charged the battery.another month went by and had a low battery issue took it back in they updated again and charged the battery again.had a bad sensor issue and the cargo door decided not to open, cargo button would not work.took it in they updated and changed the sensor.another month or so later had a recall on it, took it in, updated it. Then another recall, updated it.started auto correcting and braking while being driven on a major street.then the control pad wouldn't work, took it in it needed an update. Another recall a month or so later, went to take it in and it wouldn't drive, put it in reverse,it went forward, put it in forward it went in reverse, then the heater wouldn't work, the control pad started freezing all on the way to take it in for a recall. We were told it would be fixed with the update.car turned off and locked because i moved my purse to the other side of my body while driving.then about another month later it does the same reverse when put into drive, the control pad starts acting up, radio, phone and climate control freeze.then the cargo bay door closes on my son while we are unloading groceries without anyone touching it or being in the car besides him partially in the back to reach the furthest grocery bags. Taking it in again this week, but that's the last straw!i will no longer drive it as i do not trust what will malfunction next, my son narrowly escaped injury by diving out to the ground because i could not stop the cargo door from closing, car was parked and turned off inside my garage

On 22 dec 2017, while driving my volvo xc90 hybrid r-design, i received an error light that stated 12 volt battery had an issue. I called the volvo dealership in sarasota and spoke to the service manager, joe rice to let him know about this issue. While on the phone, an additional error light "abs" and then a few seconds later a car with a squiggly lanes error light came on. I immediately lost the ability tobrake, i lost the ability to steer, i lost the ability to put the suv into neutral, i lost the ability to put on my hazard blinking light. All i could do is take my foot of the gas pedal but because i was not able to put the suv in neutral, and had no brakes, i continued to move. The screen on my front console went black and the middle console went black. If i was on any busy road or expressway, i would have immediately been in an accident. Luckily after miles of forced driving, and with the help of the service manager, apply manual brakes by flooring the brake pedal as hard as possible to the floor and tap, not pump. This electrical failure defect is so detrimental that it will cause accidents resulting in death. Volvo has kept my car since 22 dec and they stated that they are changing out the computer that caused this issue. I'm afraid that volvo might not disclose this defect to nhtsa and that someone or someone else's family with be in an accident resulting in death. This is a very serious problem and beg nhtsa to look into the matter expeditiously torecall volvos with these defects. If nhtsa moves quickly, they have the ability to prevent accidents and death. I'm available to provide a sworn statement to the incident and willing to help anyway i can. Thank you for your consideration, very respectfully,[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*pm

Stop/start battery failed. Leaked acid. Caused excessive and intense foul fumes into passenger compartment. Made the car intolerable to be in without opening windows and moon roof.

(car is 26 days old) the dashboard screen went black while driving on the highway & the engine turned off & wouldn't go over (about) 10 mph.i was able to come to a rolling stop in a parking lot, and called volvo because i thought maybe i was out of gas, due to the screen not working.my volvo app let me know i still had a 1/4 of a tank, but i just wanted to make sure.they brought me gas & it was not a problem with gas, the problem was definitely electrical/ motor issues.we finally got the car towed to volvo of las vegas & they told me it was just a software upgrade needed.i feel that this is a major safety problem & does not seem like a simple software upgrade to me.i was lucky enough to not have my new baby in the vehicle when this happened, but i am a new mom & this makes me very nervous.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. While driving approximately 4 mph, the entire instrument panel and odometer gauge failed to function and the vehicle did not accelerate over 10 mph. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the computer software was updated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.

Vehicle software update removed safety items.i.e., when vehicle is in motion and is in pilot assist mode lane avoidance audio warning sound and steering wheel pull back, crash avoidance audio warning sound (when not in cruise control).pilot assist no longer works at all.volvo states software updates removed these items.issue is= i was not informed of the removal of these items.i bought the car because it was equipped with those items.volvo removed them without my permission or even notifying me the update would degrade my vehicle.volvo states they are unwilling to remove the software or even modify it for individual customers.these are safety issues.volvo complaint reference number is available if needed.vehicle mileage 38026.bought new in 2016 september.

The vehicle lost all power while i was driving on a freeway. The power came back on, (showing certain features but not all) briefly for a minute and then shut down again.in addition to this problem, a consistent issue that has happened no less than 6 times over the course of a year is the vehicle interprets there is something in its path and slams on the brakes when there is nothing in its path. There is no car, person, object, plant, etc. In the way of the vehicle at all.

Electrical failure, suspension failure, leakage to air bag sensor, software problems

I was driving on the freeway in rush hour traffic in eco drive mode with the auto start/stop function enabled. The auto stop kicked in and stopped my engine, but when i went to press on the gas pedal, the auto start did not restart my engine and the gas pedal was unresponsive. No alerts or warnings popped up - everything remained on (headlights, radio, etc), and nothing appeared wrong except for the fact that the car wouldn't move/accelerate. I was going around 1mph at this point, and pulled over to the shoulder, parked, and restarted the engine manually. I then drove home without further incident. I brought in the car to the dealer the next day. The response was that there was nothing to fix b/c no codes showed up during the diagnostic, and they weren't able to replicate the issue. They downloaded "software 1 and 2" and said that might fix the problem but they don't know. They said corporate doesn't tell them what the software updates do, but it seemed like the update mainly pertained to the radio which clearly has nothing to do with my issue. They tried to return the vehicle to me a week later (11/27) and i refused, and asked them to escalate the issue b/c i didn't feel the car was safe and there was no resolution. They assured me that corporate's field tech specialist was consulting with them on the phone and agreed the car was fine to be returned to me b/c there were no codes and the issue couldn't be replicated. I spoke to corporate (volvo north america) and they said they would escalate on their side but had no specific details to reassure me the problem was taken care of. I asked for a flight computer to be installed to log the car data in case the issue happens again, and no answer on that request so far. I got the car back today (12/8) b/c they don't know how/what to fix. The dealer has mechanics and not the software engineers that need to look at the car.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. The contact stated while driving 70 mph, the vehicle started losing motive power as the reduced engine performance warning light illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to florence toyota (2300 w. Palmetto st, florence, sc 29501) where the mechanic replaced the spark plugs however, cylinder #2 was still unresponsive. The vehicle was then towed to beach volvo (855 jason blvd #2, myrtle beach, sc 29577) where the vehicle was diagnosed and she was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact then had the vehicle transferred to stillman volvo cars (1290 wilmington pike, west chester, pa 19382) where she was informed that a piece of cylinder had fractured and it appeared as though rodents might have tampered with the cylinder leading to the engine failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a claim was filed. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

Stop/start battery failed. Leaked acid. Caused excessive and intense foul fumes into passenger compartment. Made the car intolerable to be in without opening windows and moon roof.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. While driving at approximately 70 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the engine stalled. The vehicle was not able to restart. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 400.

I bought a brand new 2016, 1st generation volvo xc90 t6 on 10/13/2015. This car was sold to me with an engine defect from the manufacturer. It took more than two years of inconvenient, back and forth trips to the glen cove volvo dealer to find out the real problem. The engine oil warning light started saying to add 1 liter of engine oil in 2017.since this is a new model of the car, i thought it's what this type of required, so initially i added engine oil a few times. However, the warning continues to come back every 5-6 months. I then suspected maybe something is wrong with the engine as it shouldn't have warned me to add engine oil as it's a brand new car. I finally drove the car to volvo glen cove dealer to request an engine check up on 02/22/2018. The first 2 times the dealer couldn't figure out the problem. Then, the 3rd time the engine light came on. Finally, my car was left with the dealer for 2 weeks and the dealer told me the engine has some manufacture defect. The oil was leaking from inside, not from outside. The engine had major repairs completed and a lot of crucial parts inside the engine were replaced.for example: gasket, piston kit, plug, sealing ring, castrol syntheti, o-ring, fuel pipe, stud, cap, anti-freeze. Only one week after getting the car back from the dealer, i was driving my whole family home. We suddenly started smelling a strong burning smell.then smoke started billowing out from the front hood. Thank god we were off high way at that time. I was able to quickly turn off the engine. I can't imagine what will happen if this happened on highway. This time the car got towed back to dealer.

We own a 2016 volvo xc90. Purchased used in july 2018. In october 2018, we had to replace the engine. There has since been a safety recall for a part that can leak that we believe was the cause of engine failure. The engine started chugging while we were on the interstate. A turtle icon came on the screen. We took the nearest exit ramp to get off. White smoke was coming from the exhaust. We looked under the hood to try to figure out the problem. The coolant was empty. There had been no warning that this was low or empty. We added coolant. We drove slowly out of the gas station lot to see if this would help. Nothing changed. We stopped immediately and called a tow. Fields volvo madison had to replace the engine. They were unclear with us about what exactly happened. It seemed they didn't know what happened. We did research and found a service campaign s29846:coolant expansion tank bleeder hose for our model car. Several reviews from people that their engine needed to be replaced b/c of this. We asked if this is what happened and they said they were pretty sure that it was. Fields tried to help by contacting volvo. Volvo initially declined any help. We contacted volvo. There was some back and forth but volvo agreed to a partial offer to pay $4,248 toward the repair cost of $12,743.42. We paid $8,657.43 for the repair. The tech's said a spark plug tip had broken off and went through the engine. They noted coolant in the cylinder. We suspected this was caused by the bleeder hose leaking the coolant, causing immediate overheating and spark plug and engine failure. Now there is a safety recall notice for the coolant bleeder hose, recall r29936, dated 6/17/19. It is attached. This oem part issue was pre-existing and unaddressed by volvo. Our engine was operating fine with no notice of pending trouble. We want help to persuade volvo to cover the entire engine repair.

Following recall service by dealership against nhtsa recall 19v308 the vehicle caught fire.the vehicle was picked up from the dealership and driven directly home, ~16 miles. At mile ~2 burning rubber was smelled while driving on the highway.at mile ~10 some smoke was seen when stopped at a traffic light.at mile~16 the engine died as the vehicle was being pulled into the driveway.smoke started pouring our from under the hood and fire was shortly thereafter visible.the entire front end burned.i have plenty more pictures of the burning and burned car.

The car was driving about 35 mph when this happen. Engine started to have multiple miss fire. Took it to a professional shop and cylinder 1, 2 and 3 have a wet spark plug. They did more testing and found that the cylinder oil ring has failed. Car only has 81k miles and needs a new engine or engine rebuild this is beloved to be to the type of the oil ring they used on this cars.

The start-stop function malfunctioned on my vehicle at a busy stop light/intersection. My wife and i felt we needed to push the car to side to keep from getting hit, despite flashers on. We had it towed to a volvo dealer who was very helpful. They had car fixed next day.said the computers or sensors not communicating. I asked volvo if they were fixing all cars. They said moly said my car was now okay

The pulley on the alternator failed so the serpentine belt fell lose and ended up behind the engine where the timing belt is located.this caused the engine to lose timing and damaged all the valves, cylinders, and engine block. Now the volvo dealer is telling me the engine can't be repaired and will need to be replaced with a new one that will cost $16,000.00. This happened while the vehicle was being driven on the freeway and arterial streets. The damage to the engine was caused by the failure of the alternator pulley. This should be a recall.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 19v308000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. Volvo cars tampa (6008 n dale mabry hwy, tampa, fl 33614, (813) 885-2717) was contacted and confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. The manufacturer confirmed that the parts were not available and provided case number: 190726'000122. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Vehicle numerous times while driving with no cars around the automatic braking feature kicks in stopping the car. This has happened on local streets as well as highways. It feels like you are being rear ended and i have also nearly been rear ended. Brought to dealers and they say they are unable to duplicate it but have been turning it off on other cars because they advise they are unable to figure it out. This happens at all different speeds

I purchased a 2016 xc90 in july15. Shortly after the purchase, i started to notice issues with the brakes and various other issues. I have taken the car into service 14 times since purchase with on a few for regular maintenance. Brake pads and both front and rear roters have been replaced, but the brake issue has not been resolved. I still frequently but randomly hear clicking sounds near to the brake paddle. I am mostly concerned that it happens when i am driving high speed while trying to slow down. If root cause cannot be identified after so many attempts of fixing, i worry that one day this car will kill someone. I have attached service records and a recording of the clicking. In addition to the brake, i also have many other issues which can be found on the service record, mostly recently, the car was on big smoke while i was driving and fire truck had to come for assistance. I am seeking your help to solve the problem. As i had so many issues with this car and one still haven't been fixed, i have no confidence to continue to drive the car

Volvo recently had a "service campaign" for the coolant expansion tank bleeder hose.we made an appointment for the repair, but the day prior to our repair, volvo usa cancelled the service campaign.this hose then failed 1-2 months later, spilling toxic coolant all over our driveway and down the street, which of course has many pets and young children on it.this alsocould have put our safety in jeopardy if this happened outside or our neighborhood.we participate in several carpools, and other parents rely on us to get their kids safely to the destination as well. Our local dealer was very prompt in completing this repair, but they also informed us that there was a recall on the spark plugs as well.we had no notification of such a recall from volvo usa.i think volvo usa is failing to take responsibility for their vehicles given the cancellation of the service campaign for a clearly defective part and the utter lack of notification of the spark plug recall.i am very concerned for all owners of the newest version of the xc90, and think volvo needs to be held accountable.

Very loud squealing noise started from engine bay while stopped at a light accompanied by a yellow check engine light. Noise would disappear under acceleration but return again off throttle. Dealer diagnosed as a failed 'breather chamber' with the following comment: 'if not repaired, faulty breather chambers can leak oil on other major engine components, including the exhaust manifold which could lead to a number of safety issues including fire.' the vehicle currently has 52,000 miles. I'm told this is a regularly occurring volvo issue by mechanic friends.

Ran a errand, came home. Went to my car & a blueish liquid was coming out. Took to a shop & then to the volvo dealership

Owned this new 2016 xc 90 t8 for about 30 days. Charged car overnight as usual. Drove it about 3 miles the next morning and suddenly car speed slowed dramatically to about 10 mph and a "car will not restart, drive to nearest dealership" unfortunately, i was not in the position to do so, so i pulled into a strip mall to safely park the car and when i turned off the car, it would not restart. Battery working fine, as radio, and lights worked , but car would not power on. Was advised by dealership, this was an issue they had just seen the week before and it was a "software issue". Car towed to dealership and i am waiting to hear. It appears this is not an uncommon issue after consulting several volvo online forums.with no drive power, this car is not able to shift into neutral for the tow truck either.very very unsafe and it is a brand new car.

While driving at an unknown speed, the engine harness wires snapped after being chewed through by rats. The check engine warning indicator began flashing after the failure occurred. The vehicle was taken to 128 volvo cars (614 north ave, wakefield, ma 01880, (781) 224-3700) where it was diagnosed that the wiring harness wires were soy-coated, which attracted the rodents. The dealer stated that the engine wiring harness needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 19,000.

While driving at approximately 60 mph with no car within 200 yards in front of vehicle, no object on the road, and no collision was imminent, the vehicle suddenly and spontaneously slowed down to almost 5 mph from about 60 mph for no reason. The seat belts pretensioned, the gas pedal dropped out from driver's feet. City safety activated. All occupants developed mild whiplash. It took several second to get car to return to highway speeds. Dealer claims it was due to a toll tag that was placed to closely to the city safety system near the rear view mirror. ...updated 12/03/15

I updated the maps in the car's navigation system on 8/3/2016. At that time, volvo's server in sweden were down. They had been down for days. Next morning, when i started driving to work, i noticed that the sensus system started rebooting every couple of minutes. As i drove on the highway, i noticed that when the sensus system rebooted, if my left turn signal was on, it would go off for a couple of seconds and then come back on. If the sensus system was rebooting and i tried to turn on the left turn signal, it would not come on. This is a safety issue as sensus system is just a central console and it's reboot should not impact car's basic functions. By the time i left work in the evening, the server in sweden was back online and the sensus console stopped rebooting and issue never happened.

My roof is leaking, it was coming out the front cabin light. This problem can be found noted on many websites with pictures for my year/model.then we started getting errors with suspension and my wife got a warning she should stop the car.she got it home and we found the water had now leaked into the rear right quarter panel where at least 1 computer is stored.that area had at least 1' of water in it. I had to pull a drain plug to drain it. The dealership confirmed the computer was fried ($2600) and had previously said our drains were clear and the fix was a new rear seal.while their another person had just gotton that sunroof $2k fix on their car. The computer has disabled the blind spot lights on the side mirrors, front collision warning and assume auto braking, the rear camera is out, and gps.these are the things that are obvious, i don't know what else is disabled i don't know.the dealer also said they were limited on the fault codes they could get because of the failure as well.in doing more research for 'volvo sunroof leak' i found a site called topclassactions.com with several individual incidences of newer years and others models where the roof leaks into the rear and fries the computer.one noted ' that happened while i was driving! i lost brakes and engine power, the gear box got locked.eventually i pulled into parking lot. At that point i tried to turned off the engine of the car but it wouldn't let me.'someone else noted brake failure as well. The sunroof issue is not uncommon and volvo is giving consumers the run around when their design leaks and damages the computer controlling key safety features.these are 'new' cars 2016 and up.there are also instances where the consumer pays to get the leak 'fixed' and it continues to leak therefore increasing the chance of the safety computer failing.

There is something called an erad, which is essentially the vehicle clutch for my electronic plug-in hybrid xc90.it is the instrument that switches between electric and gas.mine failed.when it fails, when you hit the gas enough to push it out of electric mode to gas mode, the car essentially hesitates for 1-2 seconds - it feels like it's trying to figure out what to do then an override to gas mode happens.when i identified the problem, i was trying to turn off of three lanes of traffic to a side street and the car hesitated (temporarily doesn't respond to throttle input) as i was sitting perpendicular to traffic.the all gas mode then turns on and takes over, but it hesitates which could be a serious problem.i could've been hurt, but, thankfully, i wasn't.after that, i drove it in full-time gas mode until it was fixed (no problems when i did that).if this were an isolated incident, i wouldn't report it, but there were 4 other volvos suffering from the same issue at my dealership alone (volvo cars of bethesda) so they couldn't take me for 3-4 weeks.they sell fewer than 5% of their total fleet of these t8 electric hybrids, so for 5 total cars to have the same issue (2016 - 2018) indicates a major problem.i'm concerned someone who doesn't necessarily have my awareness of cars who may otherwise feel safe in the car's throttle response may take an unnecessary chance and get into an accident.please investigate.thanks!

On approximately six different occasions, the collision avoidance system has been triggered erroneously, when no other vehicles were near my car, to the point that the audible and visual alarms were triggered, my driver's seatbelt pulled me back against the driver's seat, two of those times the car swerved itself and another two of those times the car braked itself, without any prompting from the driver to do so.the dealership told me today that because the system works on radar that sometimes this will happen.i believe that these systems need to be practically error proof because if the car brakes itself, or swerves itself, without any action from the driver it could potentially *cause* an accident.not to mention that it's very scary when it happens and then there has to be some emotional recovery as a driver to overcome these episodes.the car has about 1000 miles on it.all of these incidents happened on city streets, while the car was going anywhere from 25-45 mph.

While driving the rear driver side passenger seatbelt will unbuckle without anyone touching it. This has happened on several occasions. The most recent occasion was 3/24/21. Usually occurs on longer car rides

Second row seat's on the driver side slided to the front , because of whichboth legs of my brother were squeezed between the driver seat and the seat he was sitting on. Fortunately, the vehicle was on going slow - he could have broken his leg if it was moving on high speed.note:second row seat showed on the passenger side showed the similar problem before but did not result on such dangerous incident , so i fixed by visiting the volvo dealership. There certainly is some manufacturing defects on second row seat of my car, and am afraid to drive it around with passengers on the second row.my volvo has less than 10,000 miles on its dashboard.

The contact owns a 2016 volvo xc90. While driving approximately 50 mph, the brakes independently engaged without warning and slowed the vehicle down to approximately 5 mph. The city safety warning indicator illuminated after the brakes independently engaged. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 1,200. ...updated 12/03/15 updated 4/9/18

Volvo xc90 2016 hybrid -safety issues and terrible customer service.i started the car and my brakes suddenly made this weird noise and i could feel a shift in the brake pedal.up popped a notice on the screen by the odometer saying "brake pedal characteristics changed service required."i started to drive my kids home, thinking it was just a service notice and not a tow situation.as i drove on town roads (not hwy), the brake made a grinding sound (could also feel it in the pedal) when lightly depressed and when i fully pressed the brake to slow or stop, it wouldn't do anything at first and then it would suddenly engage in a jolting and jerky stop motionit was very scary to drive the car like this.i wasn't sure if the brakes were going to work well enough to get me and my two children home.fortunately, we did make it home but the car is not safe to drive like this.volvo towed the car out of my driveway this am.the westport service dept claimed they have "never heard of the issue," despite my finding of countless similar complaints online and a notation about it in the manual.i've only had this vehicle for 6mo. It was new off the lot.

The controls on steering intermittently disabled. I take it to the dealer they updated the software and it was fixed for while, but it reappeared again! many volvo owners has the similar issues most of them ended up replacing the control module part on the steering wheel. This is a dangerous symptom since most drivers like me rely heavily on these controls to select vehicle system options and cruise control.also dealer asking me to change the break components very frequently sometimes just 20000 miles. I am ended paying hefty price of these parts to keep the breaks safe.

At least three times now the automatic braking system has applied without any object or vehicle in front. Once was on the i95 at 65mph going under a bridge the brake suddenly applied causing the car to dip and passengers to be shaken, then it continued as normal.another time on the i78 near newark airport at 50mph passing some parked cars on the shoulder the brakes applied.another time in local traffic at 30mph the brakes applied possibly when there was a slight dip in the road.the car has been looked at a couple of times and had a software update, but it still does it.it has now been in the shop for two weeks with no result volvo suggested it was ezpass and we could wrap the ezpass in foil(and what, unwrap it for each toll booth!).this is a frightening safety issue because if we had been tailgated a car would have hit us.

While driving on a city street i put the car in eco mode. The car was moving at the time. I noticed that the car seemed to be driving loudly.as i turned left, i saw the car was in manual mode and was in first gear. So i took my foot off of the brake to slow down the car and try to put it into drive. As i tried to move the gear shifter, the car came to a complete, sudden stop.it felt like all four wheels were suddenly and immediately locked.i could not move them, even as i hit the gas.i did not see any indication on the dashboard that the emergency brake had been activated.i had not fiddled in any way with the button that allows me to change to eco mode or with the parking brake. In the moment immediately preceding the stop, i had my left hand on the steering wheel and my right hand on the gear shifter. The person behind me rear-ended me.the damage to my car was minimal.i had been the first person in the line to turn left, so there was no one in front of me. I am not sure how i was able to get the car started again. I think i turned the stop/start button a couple of times.i later attempted to recreate the automatic stop. Before making a left turn, i put the car into eco mode. As i turned, i slowly released the gas and slowly braked.the car again came to an immediate stop, as though all 4 wheels were locked at the same time.when then happened, i managed to get the car going again, and the next time i put my foot on the brake, the car came to a screeching halt again.i have not been able to recreate this scenario since then, including while trying to drive the car with a dealer rep.the dealer had a technician come in from ky, and he was not able to find any problems.

Brakes/grinding noise happened automatically without any reason or object near. Car was traveling 50mph and i had to pull over to the shoulder. Restarting the car, it was able to drive away. Definitely not safe to have the brakes come on like that.

The car is equipped with automatic handsfree foot movement tailgate operation (open and close). This allows the opening or closing of the tailgate when your hands are full. In my situation, the vehicle is off. While the tailgate is open and i am standing next to the rear bumper loading/unloading items from the trunk, the rear tailgate has closed on me unexpectedly on several occasions and hit my head/back. On one occasion, my child was standing next to me when the tailgate closed on us unexpectedly and fortunately the tailgate hit me instead of my child. It appears that if the foot movement sensor under the rear bumper senses any objects moving under/near the rear bumper (eg. A foot, a child standing by the rear bumper, bags, etc), it will automatically close the rear tailgate.this is a major safety design flaw and a safety hazard.this can be particularly dangerous if the tailgate closes unexpectedly on a small child or a limb.volvo needs to add an option in the settings or a switch to disable the automatic handsfree foot movement tailgate operation immediately.i have contacted volvo usa but they were unable to provide a solution.

During moderate to heavy rain, water streamed into the car from the area behind the rear view mirror (which houses the radar system). I first noticed the problem while driving at approx 20 mph with windshield wipers set to medium, continuous. Water dripped onto the coin storage area in front ofthe gear paddle. Moon roof was thoroughly closed (and had been repaired in the summer after an earlier recall). I parked under cover. A few hours later, i went out again. After driving for 10 minutes, the problem reappeared. It was almost as if some space was filling up and then releasing a stream of water. Or maybe it was a steady drip. Water could have been pooling in the intelli-safe system. At one point, i parked on a hill, car facing downward. A large than normal trickle of water then streamed into the car. That made me think that the problem might be windshield seal. It's also possible that water is getting into the moonroof in some way and then running to the front of the car and finding its way down through the electronic casing behind the rearview mirror. I have driven the car in the rain before without experiencing this problem. This was a heavier rain than normal though.i have attached two photos that show areas dripping. I also have two movies files which might be a bit more helpful. If you would like those, please contact me at [xxx] i cannot attach them as files.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Rear left door spontaneously unlatched and opened while driving with 6-year-old daughter in adjacent seat. Door will subsequently not latch.

My passenger rear door handle broke internally where it could not be opened from the inside or the outside of the vehicle. Both rear door handles failed and after driving around with my kids having to go in and out of the car through the front i finally received a loaner for 5 weeks until the parts were available to repair the doors. It appears the front driver and front passenger handle may fail. It is very scary tohave your kids in a car and not be able to open the door from the inside or the outside. I looked online and there were lots of recent accounts of xc90 and xc60s having this issue in europe and america. The dealership said it wasn't covered under the warranty. I ended up paying for the labor and volvo corporate paid for the $900 part inside the door.

Rear doors on the 2016 xc90 can become unable to close/latch under certain circumstances.if the weather is extremely cold and water has made it into the rubber door seals due to either melting snow or rain, the water can freeze preventing the door from closing enough to latch.this can leave the driver and their passenger stranded on the side of the road or at a remote location and unable to drive their vehicle until the passengers are able to remedy the issue by either melting the ice or removing the ice from the rubber door seals.note: the ice expanding doesn't cause the doors to open on its own, but if ice is built up in the rubber door seals, once the door is opened (whether the vehicle is moving or stationary), the doors may not close again due to the expanded rubber door seals with ice built up inside.

When parked in a school car park in nj in a rainstorm the tailgate opened on its own when an electrical storm was on. I was sitting in the car at the tie sheltering from the rain.i closed the door from the inside and locked the car. The tailgate opened again.and repeatedly did it four times in all specifically during the electrical period of the storm.this was an explicit period of 20 minutes during a 2 hour rainstorm. There was a bike rack in a hitch at the time so i wonder if the car has either a poor earth or static sensitivity for the electronic door switch.this is a safety issue in case it can happen when driving especially if my dogs were in the back and fell out on the interstate.its a theft issue if it happened when parked on a street and allowed people access to my car.

All wheel drive not working... All wheel drive in the off road mode is not working

The inside door handles (levers to open the doors)- have a thick metallic paint that chips off and causes fingers to be cut.

Have had two door latch mechanisms fail at 60k miles which make the door inoperable and could potentially trap occupants in the vehicle. This has happened with the doors closed in both cases.

Coolant leak. And hose got burned by engine.

Inside and outside handle cease to work effectively resulting in door not opening.has happened a handful of times with repair required.occupants are not able to exit the vehicle.

The rear passenger door became unlatched and opened while driving on the highway. The door would not re-. Eventually, we were able to lock it in place.

2016 volvo xc90 windshield cracki found my windshield cracked right around the rear lip-end of the hood above the wiper resting position, then cutting up at about the center of the windshield, thereby making an "l" shaped crack measuring apprx 22 inches by 8 inches. I'm the only driver of the vehicle during this period, and i think i should know if a debris or rock hit my car, causing such a major damage to the windshield. I drove it to the dealership to lodge a complaint, and they responded by saying they think it may have been a debris or rock. Well, if it's a rock or debris, i'll expect there should be some sort of a conspicuous or very glaring point of origin/impact, considering this is 22 inches by 8 inches crack on a windshield close the base seal joint. I'll also expect a point of origin/impact to have some sort of surface roughness to the finger feel, this crack is smooth all through beginning to end. Moreover the unique "l" shape doesn't seem to follow any logical accidental rock or debris profile. However, the bottom part does follow the "curved" base profile of the car/windshield area.i don't understand why at such low miles the windshield will have an approx30 inch crack. In my opinion i'll think that grossly compromises safety considering the amount of force or pressure exacted on the windshield at any point in time during operations.perhaps, time will tell what it is, however, hopefully no fatalities before then.
