I had a car accident yesterday, car slid on ice and hit tree, total loss of my vehicle.i was driving by my self, the passenger air bag deployed but the driver side air bag did not.

I was t boned at an intersection from the right side, by a vehicle traveling 45 mph and the airbags did not deploy!front wheel, both doors, frame, seat, post and suspension were damaged. $10,000 worth.i was temporarily paralyzed from the impact, i received a concussion from hitting the air bag curtain emblem. I sustained head, neck, back, left shoulder and right knee injury. Volvo replied, " the door had to be hit in a very specific place to set off the airbags.i have photos and information needed upon request.thank you.

The car locks by itself automatically when key is in ignition and you step away from car leaving you locked out. According to the dealer, this is a "feature" of this car. Among all the cars i have owned and driven this is the only that does this, volvo needs to correct his issue.

The car was going 60-63mph down the highway there was a sudden hard clunk in the transmission and my guage cluster went dead and lost all power options. Was almost hit as i tried to pull over with no blinkers, flashers, etc. After about 10 minutes i tried to start the car again and the dash came back but srs warning was up on the info cluster. Took my car to the repair shop (authorized volvo repair) and was told there were no codes present. They drove the car for a week and same thing happened to them. They suggested that the cem volvo part number 30657629 was no good. To replace it would be 1300$ after some research i found that there are a lot of other volvo owners who have had this same occurrence, and even been in accidents due to this failure at different intervals in mileage ranging from 50k and up. Seems to me there should be a recall and some repairs made to the cem on the v70, xc70, s90, s40 etc as they all seem to do it.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. While driving approximately 65 mph, there was a loud abnormal noise and the vehicle nearly stalled without warning. The contact discovered that the brake lights, instrument panel lights, and turn signals failed. In addition, the srs, check engine, and rear door car ajar waring indicators illuminated. The vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic where the battery was flushed and recommended that the valet key not be used. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the rear door module was replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic who diagnosed that the central electronic control module was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000. Updated 03/18/16*lj

2004 volvo xc 70 engine with 68,000 miles, running poorly, inoperable; towed to dealer where wiring terminal ends at both throttle valve and engine control module replaced.

Consumer stated the sensor control air bags failed twice and the 2nd time the dealer replaced the accelerator sensor. The accelerator and brake pedals failed. The consumer is consumer because vehicle is only a year old and because of all the sensor failures the consumer was concerned with the wiring of the vehicle.

Complaint centers on a 2004 volvo xc70.after a minimal amount of online research, i find that there are many owners with similar problems.recently, after driving vehicle past initial "warm-up" stage an electronic anomaly occurs at random intervals, at speeds ranging from 1 - 65 mph.the anomaly always involves a sudden "jolt" as if the transmission slipped, and is also characterized by various other electronic occurrences.these can include "left rear door open" light, all interior lights illuminating, driver's seat heater turning on, "srs airbag" urgent message, "brake failure" notification, and loss of all dashboard instrumentation including lights and turn signals.any one of these occurrences are an immediate attention-grabber while behind the wheel and create a situation detrimental to safe vehicle operation.this particular vehicle is now at an authorized volvo dealer for the second time (had to be towed the first time) for the same problem.dealership performed software update first visit which did not fix problem.now dealership thinks it may be central electronics module, a $1000+ fix, which may or may not correct the problem.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds the vehicle made a thumping sound and decelerated. Also, all of the lights on the instrument panel turned off and the brake lights and turning signals failed. The contact mentioned that all of the lights and instrument panel were operating normally after a few hours. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure and advised the contact that the instrument panel module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000 and the current mileage was 79,918.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. While driving at 65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning and failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter and throttle body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic control module needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 132,645.

The 2004 volvo xc70 will just stop while i am driving.it has happened at least 5 times in the last 1.5 years.there is no pattern to the problem.it is very intermittent.i was in a situation whereby i was driving 65 mph on a major nj highway with a tractor trailer barreling down on me when the car just stopped, losing all power, - including power steering and flashers so that i can warn others of the problem i am having.last week, i was driving on local roads, 30 mphwith my child, and it happened again.the local and respectable dealership wasaware of it and has tried to address the issue, but they have very little information to go on.however, the bottom linethat i have no warning as to when this will happen .didnot sputter and no warning lights wenton, until after the car was stopped).i am affraid to drive the car, and more importantly i am nervous about tranporting my children in it.on the whole, we love volvo and this is our 3rd consecutive lease from the same dealership, but this is becoming a serious concern for my family.the "safe" volvo that i bought into when i had my first child, is no longer safe.

The side rear l/r brake lights stay on all the time causing a safety concern, the top center led brake light continues to work normally. Tapping on the brake light relays installed in the rear electronic module causes the brake lights to shut off."recall campaign no.131 brake light relay" needs to be applied to 2004 models as well.

On 6/29/2005, i was driving my 2004 volvo c70on a four lane road when suddenly the engine raced and then all gauges went dead.the steering wheel locked, the brakes locked and i had absolutely no control of my vehicle. Fortunately, at that moment there were no cars around me and somehow after 5-10 seconds, i was able to get my car off the road.i was very frightened that serious injury and or death to myself or someone else might have been caused.i contacted road service and had the car towed to volvo of tampa, florida.the following day i received a call from the service department stating that they had checked the computer and then test drove the vehicle about 20 miles, but found nothing wrong. I was told i could pick up my car.i had a discussion with chris in the service department stating that i was petrified to get behind the wheel again.i questioned how the problem was resolved and received no acceptable explanation. I told him i would be out of town until 7/5/05 and that he needed to discuss the situation with the service manager. Today, 7/6/05 i received a call from eric, a manager and wastold the same thing.i again explained how frightened i was and told him that i would like another vehicle to drive while this situation was being resolved.eric told me absolutely not. He stated that there is "no defective component". He told me that he would test drive the car and call me back. I have not spoken with him again at this time. I had complained previously about shaking and engine racing and the problem still has not been resolved.because of all the problems i have had with this vehicle i have not driven it more than absolutely necessary.with this most recent, possible life threatening situation i want volvo to buy this vehicle back.i will not risk my life or the life of others. I believe this volvo contains serious defects that pose the potential for loss of life and/or serious injury to myself, my family and anyone else on the highway.

The events leading up to the failure of my vehicle (which has occurred 4 times in the last 9 months) are described in this volvo recall.however, my xc70 is a 2004 but is having this identical issue.(a software glitch is responsible for 11,993 volvo models being recalled by the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa). The campaign includes model year 2008-2010 s80 models, 2010 s60 models, 2009-2010 xc70 models, and the 2010 xc60, all running faulty software in their central electronic modules (cem). According to nhtsa, the signal from the cem may fail to reach the fuel pump electronic module (pem), inhibiting the fuel from reaching the engine even as the vehicle's throttle is depressed. Normally, this would just result in an engine that fails to start. However, residual pressure in the system may allow the vehicles in question to drive a short distance before the engine quits... And if the vehicle stalls in certain conditions, a crash could occur.)i took my car to the local dealership and was told to replace the cem at a cost of $1200.00 and that they wanted me to know that they were not even sure this would fix my problem.

This report is for my 2004 volvo for which iam original owner and only has 35500 miles. My seat caught on fire while driving yesterday. I got the fire out and am told that the seat warmer driver side is what caught on fire. Is there a recall for this or does it come under warranty perhaps.

This complaint is for a 2004 volvo xc70. This car has some serious problems with its various modules. When driving on a busy interstate highway, the car jerked as if the transmission was slipping. After this a warning light stating "brake failure; pull over safely" illuminated. Car went into limp mode while on the highway in fast-moving traffic. Got car to a parking lot and waited about 30 minutes. Car started and i was able to drive it home, although being about 50 miles away. Car went in to limp more again during drive and lost all dash indicators, including turn signals, speedometer and odometer. Light for "check engine" was illuminated. After mechanic reset codes, he stated that it might be the ecm or tcm. I sent off the ecm for diagnosis and it came back without any errors. I then sent off the tcm and learned that it needed repair. After receiving the repaired tcm unit, we re-installed and car drove for a couple of days. I took the car for a 6-hour round trip drive this past weekend and had one incident of the jerking, but without any other issues. After letting the car sit in the drive for around 20 minutes, i tried starting it only to get another "check engine" light and inoperable dash indicators (speedometer, odometer, turn signals, etc.). Took the car to a volvo dealership today for a diagnosis. They stated that there was no contact occurring with their computer diagnostic system. They recommended a replacement of the cem as a first step with no guarantee that the problem resides in the that module. That part installed is over $1,100.this is my fifth volvo, and undoubtedly, the worst yet. I am considering junking it and leaving volvo in my proverbial rear view. It is astounding that volvo has not offered a recall as this is clearly a safety hazard. Perhaps it takes people dying for car companies to own up to faulty building.

I have a 2004 volvo xc70 with only 53,000 miles.on june 20th, the "reduced engine performance" light came on with no apparent change in handling or acceleration. The light then went off 20 minutes later. The next day after driving for about 20 minutes, the light came back on this time along with the "check engine" light, and there was virtually no acceleration. I got the car to limp along at about 5 mph with the hazard lights, and it finally stopped so i pushed it on to the closest parking spot. The light went off f4 hours later and i was able to drive it home. I then took it into the service dealer. The mechanic ran the diagnostics on the computer and the code for the throttle actuator appeared. They were going to charge me over $1,000 until i insisted that it was covered under the 7 year extended factory warranty plan. It is now getting fixed and should get it back tomorrow but i have read online that this happens quite a bit with this model. I am very scared to drive it again esp since i have a 5 year old daughter. The last thing i need is to have the car stalled on me on the freeway in the middle of traffic. Help! can my car be covered under the lemon law?

I have been bring my car to a volvo dealer in my area for about 6 years. I thought that i could trust them. Starting in 2014 i noticed that the traction control light would appear when driving during wet conditions andif i hit a pothole of which we have many here. I told the dealership about this on to 2 different visits. Both times they said their was no problem. When i took my car to an independent repair shop for a second option for an altogether different issue, it was discoveredduring a test drive by the lead mechanic that my car was not driving in awd.that volvo dealership and their mechanics put, me and my family in danger.unforgivable. This issue(s) occurred while driving (in motion) in heavy traffic as i live in a large city and with elderly passengers as i was a volunteer driver for the elderly.

Found out today that my car has a crack in the fuel pump after smelling gas the last few days.there was a recall for 2001-2005 xc70's (jan. 2010) where the fuel pump can develop cracks in the flange when exposed to hot temps and (thermal cycling) combined with varying fuel grades.checked with the dealer and was told connecticut was not one of the states covered by this recall.why not and have there been other complaints from states not covered in the original recall.a car fire can be a definite result of this fuel leak and should be covered in all states.

The failure mileage was 132,645.

Engine hesitation upon acceleration and sudden transition into the "reduced engine performance" mode which was extremely dangerous on the freeway. The incident happened several times with the failure codes pointing to the "etm". In other cases the engine was surging after start and then went back to the "limp" mode.

The new xenon headlights on our volvo xc70 provide very poor light in low beam mode when going down hill.we had a near collision due to not being able to see far enough ahead of the vehicle.the lights are unsafe, especially going down hill.we have contacted volvo about this problem, they state that the lights meet government standards and there is no issue. *la

I have 70k miles on my 2004 volvo xc70 and noticed strong gasoline smell from the gas tank area. The car often would not start, especially if parked on the incline. Upon inspection, an independent mechanic found a gasoline leak around the gas pump area and suggested to fix it as a safety hazard. The gas pump pipe has a crack in it.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. The contact stated that there was a fuel odor inside and outside of the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was informed that the vehicle had a defective fuel pump and fuel pump seal. The mechanic linked the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline). The contact then took the vehicle to jim fisher volvo (2108 w burnside st, portland, or 97210) where he was informed that the vehicle was not under recall. The contact was informed that he had to pay out of pocket for the repairs. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered a discount towards the repairs. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

My 2004 volvo xc70 died twice night and once during the day while driving at high speed on two crowded highways around new york city.the engine totally shut off, the lights went out and luckily i was going fast enough to roll over to the shoulder.this is a car i keep regularly maintained at a volvo dealer service center as well.someone made me aware of a volvo customer blog where several other people had the same problem.

Multiple check engine lights but no clear issue discovered.now the car vibrates when i start driving it and at times i can floor the gas pedal and not go over 20 mph.i am told it is the fuel pump that needs replacing though it did not show up as an issue from the check engine light diagnosis.also, spark plugs were changed in sept 0'7 yet were changed again at the 60k check up two weeks ago.

The problem is this happened to my volvo too see recall below..it is not right that only certain vin had the recall when my fuel pump is cracked too! this seems to be a defect on all 2004 xc70s and not just vehicles in the south. When i found out about the problem, i googled it and 100s of complaints are on blog sites. The government needs to demand volvo recall all 2004s with this problem. In michigan we have extreme temps in weather too!gas fumes were leaking in my backseat where the kids sit. Someone could have died! i want a recall on all volvo's having this problem. Volvo needs to take care of all the cars not just some of them. Doing the ones only in the south is a joke! even my mechanic couldn't believe it.the nhtsa is suppose to protect all consumers! here is the recall that my vehicle was not part of but its the same issue and problem:volvo is recalling certain model year 2001-2005 s80, model year 2001-2004 v70, s60, xc70 and model year 2003-2005 xc90 vehicles sold in or registered in the states of alabama, arizona, arkansas, california, florida, georgia, hawaii, kentucky, louisiana, mississippi, nevada, new mexico, north carolina, oklahoma, south carolina, tennessee, texas, utah, virginia and the u.s. Territories. When exposed to certain environmental conditions (hot climate and temperature cycling) over time and in combination with varying fuel quality, the fuel pump can develop cracks in the fuel pump flange.

Fuel leaking from top of gas tank.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70.the contact experienced difficulty starting the engine.she made several attempts before the engine started and then heard a loud noise followed by excessive vibration.immediately, the check engine warning indicator illuminated intermittently on the instrument panel.the driver smelled a strong odor of fuel when the vehicle was in operation.in addition, there was a small amount of fuel spilling onto the ground from the fuel tank.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing and they stated that the fuel pump failed.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were 95,000. Updated 2/20/09 the mechanic stated the main fuel pump had a crack at the housing. Updated 02/23/09.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. The contact received a recall notice associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump). The contact scheduled an appointment for the vehicle to be repaired under the recall. The contact traveled 55 miles each way and upon arrival at the dealer, she was advised that the part was unavailable and the vehicle was not repaired. The contact experienced the identical problem on a separate occasion with the same dealer. The third attempt for the recall repair; the contact had taken the vehicle to a different dealer where the recall remedy was performed; however, after the repair fuel was leaking from the vehicle onto the ground. The manufacturer was notified and they informed that the dealer would correct the recall remedy repair. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint.the failure mileage was 70,000. The vin was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. While driving various speeds, a fuel odor was detected inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to goodwin's volvo (91 main st, topsham, me 04086) where it was diagnosed that the fuel tank needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notnotified of the failure. The failure mileage was 163,459. Consumer stated smelled gas from, from the beginning, nobody could smell it but my daughter and i finally checked by used car dealer, they said it was a loose clamp, which they tightened, i could smell it so they recommended a second opinion took it to goodwins volvo. Topsham copy of findinds enclosed when i took it back to reno meadows auto, they said it was the vent tube, they replaced the copy enclosed, seems to be okay now. Updated 10/15/18

About 2 weeks ago, i suspected fuel leak in my car.it is garaged.i did not take it seriously as it was on and off - at least in my detection.i took it to a mechanic anyway - and he performed inspections and "tightened retaining ring for left side sender" and asked me to "watch" for any further incidents.on tuesday this week i filled glass to the brim in hopes of knowing more about this leak issue and left in my garage overnight.on wednesday morning when i opened my garage door to leave to work, the fuel stench was intense.i moved my car out from my garage and noticed a small puddle of fuel on the driver side rear.without understanding the risk i was getting into, i drove the car to work - luckily with no incidents.called my mechanic and he rightfully suggested me to tow it to his shop - which i did.he called later and said that i have a hairline leak on the "sender line" and i need to replace the entire fuel pump unit - and said it would cost me $880 [l&p] - of course, with volvo parts.i just completed it this morning - and just have driven my car out from the shop [he replaced just the driver side fuel sender unit - at a cost ~$575].back home, i was researching and came across a recall notice from volvo for this same issue.unfortunately i did not get any notice of this recall - but was told by the volvo rep [when i called them] that this issue has been addressed on my car earlier during a regular dealer inspection.she asked me to file my case again - and currently awaiting a response from volvo.i am disappointed - not much about the cost but the risk that i put myself and my family into - without knowing or being aware of this recall notice.of all the car manufacturers, i would have expected volvo to let us know about this - as safety is [apparently] synonymous with their brand name.

Although the 'cracked fuel pump flange' recall service (volvo recall r220, nhtsa 09v-483) was previously performed on my vehicle, the volvo xc70 has an additional 'fuel sending unit' on the driver's side of the car. This additional fuel component has a similarly formed flange which also develops a crack. Even though the units are similarly composed and both in the same environment, i have been told the auxiliary fuel sending unit is not covered under volvo recall 220. Exactly as described in the fuel pump recall, the crack in the driver's side fuel sending unit allows gasoline to constantly ooze through the crack and slowly pour onto the ground and puddle.if a fuel pump flange crack allowing gasoline to pour onto the ground was cause for a recall, why is the exact same problem in the auxiliary fuel sending unit not also a cause for recall?

Park the car and smell gas did some more research and how to set the fuel pump is leaking gas out of the car on the street and sad doesn't have gas pressure and it leaks gas under the back seat

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled numerous times. The check engine light illuminated while the failure occurred. The vehicle was taken to the mechanic to have a diagnostic performed. The failure was located at the fuel pump. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 178,000 and the current mileage was 182,000.

I smelled gasoline fumes in car when the car was in motion, on a city street, and immediately took car to my volvo mechanic.they told me it was a cracked fuel pump.cost me $723.55 out of pocket to repair. Bought the car on 02/14/2015 and this repair was on 09/24/2015; just over seven months of ownership!i researched, and saw there was a recall on this issue, and called volvo about it. Volvo said they would not honor recall notice on my car because i was not located in one of the states specified in the recall notice.totally unfair!!obviously, this problem occurred in my volvo in the state of colorado, which has temperature fluctuations from below 0deg f to over 95deg f throughout the seasons.i am very unhappy and feel i am not the only volvo owner who has run across this geographical disparity contained in volvo's recall notice.i want a reimbursement, and, although my mechanic is not a volvo dealer, he has been in business for over 25 years, and specifically works on volvo vehicles only.i purchased the vehicle from pedersen volvo in fort collins, co, on february 14, 2015, and the service manager chris said he also would contact volvo for assistance.they were unable to help me as volvo maintained the stipulation of vehicle geographical area. My repair mechanic is carl duke volvo repair, fort collins, colorado.

Started smelling gasoline when driving, and noted dripping under gas tank when parked.i removed the fuel pump cover in the floorboard, and there is a leak in the top of the fuel pump, that drips constantly while the ignition is on.this has been reported before, but my vin is not listed as one of the usual suspects.

I just bought a 2004 volvo xc70 station wagon and it seems to be leaking from the fuel pump which from my understanding is a recall. I bought this vehicle thinking because it was a volvo it was going to be a safe car for my children and i. If you can contact me and let me know if you can help me i would greatly appreciate it my number is [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Fuel pump needs to be replaced

I have a copy of recall 220nhtsa #09v483 for a 2004 volvo xc70. The reason being fuel smell and/or fuel seep page. We have been smelling fuel for several months and on 7/29/17 i noticed a couple of drops of fuel hit the pavement while looking at the car. I have called volvo twice concerning this matter and i have also called nhtsa (reference number 1122416) and have been advised that my vin number does not match the recall, even though it's the same year make and model and is exhibiting the very same symptoms included in the recall. I'm extremely concerned about the safety of my vehicle i.e. Fuel ignition and i don't understand why i am responsible to pay for the necessary repair when my vehicle is clearly included in the recall. I would really appreciate your help in rectifying this safety issue. Thank you,[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. The contact noticed an abnormally strong fuel odor coming from the vehicle. In addition, when he attempted to start the vehicle, it hesitated. The ignition would turn over, but the vehicle would not start. The contact had to turn off the vehicle and depress the accelerator pedal a few times before the vehicle would start. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure issued an extended warranty, but the vehicle was not included. The failure mileage was 114,000.

The fuel pump began leaking fuel in hot weather. It leaks both if the car is being driven or if it's stationary. There is an existing recall that seems to cover this issue. It is referred to as "recall 220" in volvo's documentation. The original recall limits the affected vehicles to ones which were originally purchased in specific u.s. States. This is oddly arbitrary considering cars can be moved around and warm weather isn't exclusive to any specific location. I've attempted to contact the manufacturer and the nhtsa but am immediately shut down due to my vin not being listed in their database. Volvo issued documentation to their service locations on how to visually inspect a vehicle to determine if it's affected. I performed those steps and believe my vehicle fits the guidelines for the recall.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. Whenever the contact fueled the vehicle, fuel began to leak out. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline). The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.

During acceleration the gearing slips between 1st and 2nd gear causing a very hard shift (due to engine acceleration) when the 2nd gear engages. It is dangerous at times in ice or snow.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. The contact was driving approximately 25 mph when the transmission slipped. The failure persisted for approximately four months before the vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for the failure and the dealer replaced the transmission. She then contacted the manufacturer and they were willing to take the liability for a portion of the repair costs. The failure mileage was 57,544 and the current mileage was 59,000.

Volvo xc70 angle gear burned up!2004 with 90k on it.seems to be an ongoing issue with volvo's - need to purchase new or used part.price is anywhere between $1000 - $2000.not good.volvo claims no real issue.

Volvo xc-70 (2004) transmission problem - jerky gear transmission at slower speeds.

Shaking of vehicle, clunking and slipping of transmission.transmission failed.transmission replaced with factory remanufactured unit..

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle would make a violent jerk when accelerating and decelerating. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who informed the contact that she needed to replace the transmission. The vehicle had not been repaired. There was also a failure with the brakes. The contact noticed the abs light illuminated on the instrumental panel after she tried to decelerate and the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. The dealer inspected the vehicle and informed the contact that there was a failure within the abs module and it needed to be replaced. The repairs for the abs module had not been performed. The failure mileage was approximately 53,000.updated 02/07/11 updated 02/14/11

I have a 2004 xc70 with 56,000 miles.recently, the "reduced engine performance" light came on with no apparent change in handling or acceleration.the light then went off the next time i drove the car.a few days later, the light came back on this time along with the "check engine" light, and there was virtually no acceleration.i got the car to limp along at about 5 mph with the hazard lights on to the closest garage, where i left it overnight.the mechanic ran the diagnostics on the computer and the code for the throttle body appeared.he cleaned the throttle body but indicated that might not totally solve the problem and that if it needed to be replaced it would have to be done at a dealer.(other than several oil changes, all scheduled maintenance has been performed at a volvo dealer.) the car worked well for about a week and then the "check engine" and "reduced engine performance" lights came back on.i took the car to the volvo dealer.initially they couldn't find anything wrong with it, they drove it about 20 miles and claimed no lights came on and the computer did not show any diagnostic codes.they upgraded the software to smooth out the gear shifting in the automatic transmission and at my request did the 60,000 mile servicing.then, when i went to pick the car up, both lights came back on in the service department immediately after i started the car.the service advisor took the car back into the shop, ran the diagnostics again and confirmed the throttle body needed to be replaced.car is no longer under warranty and the service advisor indicated there were no recalls for this issue for this model year.after a few days in the shop, the car is now working well but i no longer trust it - had this happened on a highway it would have been very dangerous.

Automatic transmission slippage, date is ongoing.

Angle gear failed while driving 15 mph on side street.car had to be towed and angle gear in transmission replaced.car had perfect dealer maintenance record and transmission had just been serviced 4000 miles prior to failure - exactly as manufacturer schedule recommended.

Noticed a severe change for the worse in the handling characteristics of my volvo xc 70 awd vehicle.lost awd capability, confirmed by front wheels slipping in light snow.dealer inspection identified failed angle gear and coupler, repair price $2500.00 not covered under warranty.owner replaced angle gear with rebuild unit from salvage and a new coupler.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. The contact stated that while having routine wheel maintenance performed on the vehicle an independent mechanic stated that the rear differential housing was cracked. He was advised by the mechanic that the failure was a potential safety risk and to drive the vehicle with extreme caution. The manufacturer stated that the failure was not a safety issue and would not offer any assistance. The contact did not believe the vehicle was safe to drive and would no longer drive the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were approximately 89,150.

Front passenger side seat belt does not retract efficiently.sometimes the seat belt cannot be used at all.it's a safety risk.volvo should replace the faulty seat belt for free.

Front seat belt shoulder harness non-adjustable. I am 5"0 and no matter how i adjust the seat the shoulder harness is across my neck. This can be very dangerous in a accident.my husband is 5"10" and he has the same problem.complained to dealer and they said just to adjust seat. That is not the solution.

Consumer complained aboutseat belt problem.shoulder harness was not adjustable, and the strap came across the driver's neck. The driver was 5'2" tall, and the seat was raised as high as it could go. However, the seat belt still came across the neck of the driver. *la

This report is for my 2004 volvo for which iam original owner and only has 35500 miles. My seat caught on fire while driving yesterday. I got the fire out and am told that the seat warmer driver side is what caught on fire. Is there a recall for this or does it come under warranty perhaps.

Seat heater shorted out causing fire in seat foam rubber burning through seat cover.

I am original owner.car has 135k miles.while driving, driver's side seat warmer almost started fire. I smelled and saw smoke from side of seat. Melted side of seat and left hole.i pulled over and put out before any flames.

Front seat design is uncomfortable and pushes in drivers back at a point that makes the back hurt.i cannot drive for more than 30 minutes due to the pain.this also happens to my husband, who is much taller, so i assume it is happening to many drivers.there are three sections on the seat back, and the middle section sticks out at the point your back wants to stick out, not get pushed in, making it very uncomfortable.this has been a problem since i purchased the car.the dealer looked at it and said there wasnothing wrong with the seat.

While backing out of a parking place, i felt a sensation of going over a bump.i stopped the car and examined around and under the car.no object or "bump" item was seen.i drove slowly and experienced metallic noises coming from the car.upon having the car checked by my regular garage, it was determined that the emergency brake had broken.i have had it replaced (very expensive) and the mechanic said he had never seen this type of emergency break damage before.other owners of this vehicle may be helped by this information.

Noticed that the brakes had become soft and breaking was less effective. Pedal was loose and there was a noise. We brought the car to the dealer for rectification.

The consumer indicated that the brake and accelerator pedals were too close. The consumer was driving into town, applied the brakes and hit the gas pedal at the same time. The consumer contacted volvo but refused to take any responsibility for the defect.*sc

Since the purchase in august 2003, my c70 convertible has turning problems and i can't safely make a u-turn in traffic or park in a parking space.the wheel turns only to a certain point and then stops.the incompetent volvo service dept. Has said that i need my "stops" adjusted - why would they be there in the first place?i bring the car in for service and they do some meaningless service and the steering is temporarily fixed for a short period of time.when i brought it in to service another time, they told me my tires were the wrong size - it's the tires that volvo put on the car, not me.the steering wheel shakes significantly between 30-45 mph and, again, they told me it's the tires.the auto-dim mirror does not dim since i leased the vehicle and volvo service told me that it only works when headlights from oncoming traffic hits the sensor.what????i have literally been blinded by traffic behind me that i pull over to the side of the road until they pass.the mirror does not work and is causing me not to drive at night for my own safety.volvo has produced an unsafe vehicle and will not take responsibility for it.i take my life in my hands every time i get into the vehicle.i know other volvo owners that are experiencing the steering wheel shaking problem and they are not getting satisfaction.i have also talked other people and advised them not to lease or purchase this c70 convertible.my car is 18 months old and i have only 12000 miles on it because i am frightened to drive it.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70. The contact stated that water entered the vehicle through the windshield. While driving at any speed noted rumbling noise from left front end with right hand turn.found to have broken left front spring.mechanic informs me that this is a common problem in volvos.

Both front coil springs broke while going straight at low speed.vehicle is not used off road.repair required strut replacement.dealer said this is a very common problem for volvo.this is a major safety hazard.why is there no recall?

While my car was parked inside my garage there was a sudden "bang".the following morning i discovered while backing out of garage that the driver side coil spring had broken.had i been driving while this happened it would have resulted in the shredding of the front driver side tire possibly resulting in a severe accident.the reason i own volvo is principally dye to it's reputation for safety.in fact, volvo uses the term safety in all it's advertising.this is a grave flaw and i ask nhtsa to investigate weather this is a common flaw in the 2004 volvo xc70 and other volvo's with this coil spring.

While driving on smooth surface- heard a sudden loud sound as if something large dropped on the road. Car continued to drive normally except with a loud clunky sounds heard over bumps. Less than 5-miles later, when i pulled over to the garage- i recovered a piece of the spring coil which dropped: the driver side coil spring had broken/failed instantaneously. This uncommon problem appears to be common with xc70 owners- and could result in potentially serious accidents.

I had a coil spring break on the front of my 2004 volvo xc70.i had it replaced 3 weeks ago.tonight, another coil spring in the rear passenger snapped (really loud!!!i can't imagine flying metal is safe).i'm just glad neither incident happened while we were driving.that makes 2 coil springs in less than a month.

Broken front coil spring on drivers side.occurred while driving, which popped tire, and required stabilizer link to be replaced.

We had just driven about 200 miles on the highway and pulled into our hotel parking lot. The car was in perfectly fine working order with no indication of a problem. When we returned to the car to go out, it made a scraping clunking, sound from the front driver's side wheel when we moved or turned the wheel.we managed to get it to a nearby repair shop where it was determined that the front driver's side coil spring had snapped while it was parked in the hotel parking lot. The coil was replaced.

Left front coil spring crack and failure, lost control of vehicle.

Driving ~30mph straight on snow covered road.front left coil spring failed.

Catastrophic failure of front passenger coil spring.

2004 volvo xc70 wagon, 89,000 miles. Front left coil spring broke while car parked in driveway (fine previous evening, obvious clunking sound when turning out of driveway in morning). Loud noise when turning steering wheel, car not drivable. Mechanic found spring badly corroded, fractured near bottom of coils. Volvo dealership's parts department informed mechanic they were "stocking plenty of springs." this vehicle had a similar break in the left rear spring 8 weeks previously.car is used as commuter vehicle and has never been off-road (4 whl drive sold as "cross country") or used in commercial service or for carrying heavy loads.

24 june 2011, got in to my 2004 volvo xc70, appx 90000 miles on german roads, to drive off to work in the morning.heard loud screeching noise near the right wheel well when i placed the car on drive to move forward.next thing you know, i have a severe air leak in the front right tire.just a day prior, the car was driven through the day without any symptoms of problem and parked in the drive way with no issues.when i pulled the tire off, i found the spring snapped in two pieces with sharp ends.good thing this did not happened on the autobahn.we could have had another american soldier or family on the front page of german and american newspapers and digital media.

2004 volvo xc70:i was pulling out of my garage and immediately heard a grinding sound. I then heard a whooshing sound.the front passenger side spring coil cracked and punctured (and ruined) a four week old tire.there was no warning that this was going to happen.i was lucky that i wasn't on the highway because i would have had a sudden tire blowout.subaru had this problem with spring coils and had a recall to install shield to protect tire.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo xc70.the contact heard a loud banging on the front driver's side of the vehicle while driving in reverse.the front driver's side suspension coil spring failed.the vehicle was driven to the repair shop and they removed the front struts.they reassembled the front strut assembly with new, original volvo manufactured front struts, mounts, bushings, and springs.the dealer reinstalled the front strut assembly and then test drove the vehicle to makupdated 02-23-09e sure it was able to be driven.the failure mileage was 97,791.updated 02/24/09.

Broken front coil springs on both the driver and passenger sides. Occurred in two separate incidents and both incidents occurred while pulling straight out of the garage.the broken coil spring on the passenger side (1st incident) punctured the front tire. The 2nd incident occurred aprrox 3 month later, where the driver side coil spring broke. This was identify immediately and no damage to the tire occurred.the coil spring was replaced in both cases.

I was driving along the highway and suddenly my car just quit running...in the middle of a busy highway...i didn't know what to do...2 nice men pushed me over into the turn lane to be out of the road...my windows worked, lights and so i knew it wasn't the battery...it just wouldn't start....actually this had happened a couple of weeks before, however, after letting it sit about 5 min. It started up and i was able to get home...i thought maybe it overheated but none of the warnings went on...so i ignored it and wish i wouldn't have as we had to leave my car in a vacant lot off the highway for two days as it was the 4th of july holiday and no one was working...we went back to check to see it on july 5, and it started up...as i was driving home (july 5)sunday...it quit again at a stop sign where i had no place to turn off...of course, the steering locked when the car stopped...it was scary...i then waited for about 5 min. And it turned over and started again...i drove fast to get home (about 4-5 miles) and made it home...so relieved as it is very scary to be stuck in the middle of a busy highway and road.luckily my husband was following me so i wasn't alone...i am over 65...i like my car but can't be burdened with a problem like this...

I have had the same failure 3 times with this car.started car up after it was sitting in parking lot on a very hot day.within 1-2 miles started experiencing inability to roll windows up or down, car started losing power and instrument control panel went blank. I was able to get the car safety off the road.it would not start until the next morning.it has been towed twice.the last time to a volvo dealer who could not replicate the failure; no codes were stored or found.the car is back to running great...until the next time it dies.

Engine hesitation upon acceleration and sudden transition into the "reduced engine performance" mode which was extremely dangerous on the freeway. The incident happened several times with the failure codes pointing to the "etm". In other cases the engine was surging after start and then went back to the "limp" mode.

Vehicle accelerates without warning causing loss of control. The sudden acceleration condition occurred mostly after the vehicle was placed in reverse to parallel park.*nlm

Car began lurching/chugging forward as i tried to accelerate onto the highway, reminiscent of spark plug problems, except that the plugs were replaced the day before.car slowed to "limp" mode and "reduced engine performance" light came on.after shutting the car off, waiting a minute or two, i was able to start it and drive without problems.the exact same thing happened exactly one week later.i took it in to the dealer and was told they couldn't find anything wrong--no codes were coming back on the computer and that it was a weather related issue.less than one week after getting it back it did the same thing, thankfully, after i crossed a major road.this time the check engine light came on, as did the "engine system service required" message.according to the dealer, the throttle control needs to be cleaned and possibly the mass airflow sensor needs to be replaced.i thought volvo had fixed this on '02 and later.guess not.this isn't just an inconvenient problem, it's highly dangerous.i was fortunate enough the three times that this happened (within 3 weeks) to be able to pull over and out of traffic.had i been in heavier traffic, i easily could have been in an accident or worse on the highway.
