After a side impact the side/curtain air bags failed to deploy. Impact to the passenger rear and front door. The impact was between 30-35 miles per hour.

I was recently told my 2001 v79xc needed ball joints, then sway bars and someone else said struts!also:i have had the car diagnosed, the system reported throttle module errors and electircal or circuit problems;throttle module cleaned, then replaced; headlights replaced 3 times (wiring causes shorts); gas filter replaced two junes in a row gas propelled out of the tank back at me upon pumping (something about air intake line was clogged), the brackets underneath the car are totally rusted not stainless steel!i had the cooling fan replaced, car overheated into the red!i too have had little time to enjoy my car.the e brake sticks in the winter, because the coating on the lines/cables is cracked, broken/burned due to improper suspension.my sun roof, interior lights and rear hatch door works intermittently in cold weather.the glove compartment was rattling loudly and the dealeri bought it from tried to fix it and told me i had to live with it! of course another dealership fixed it outright.the seatbelt frequently sticks and doesnt take up the slack intermittently only to get shut in the drivers door frequently, when i just about think it has corrected itself.and, there is a strange draft on the front passenger side window that gets quite cold in the winter.the seal seems fine and its another problem no shop seems to know anything about.

2001 v70xc volvo .car started to loose power unexpectedly. When you needed to pull out into traffic it might hesitate.i had it repaired by volvo and they replaced the electronic throttle module at 82,899 miles.

Traveling on local road, lost power going up hill.within seconds car completely dead.some alarming message came on, like "total system failure" with the exclamation point in red.car would not start.called volvo on call and was towed after waiting an hour on road.no shoulder on road.paid $1300 to have etm replaced by volvo service in westport, ct.not told that this was very common part that needed replacing.. Only found out after a web search.

I was in heavy commute traffic, going about 60 mph, when my volvo cross country [2001] suddenly lost power.after towing, i was told that my electronic throttle module had failed.the replacement cost was about $1100.subsequently, i was made aware that this is under investigation and a class action is filed in ca.i had no earlier problems of this nature, and have always maintained my car.i hope that your investigation is fruitful, as this is a serious safety risk.my situation could have resulted in one or more fatalities.

2001 volvo xc70 cross country wagon sputters and stalls signals fail etc... We bought this car used from a volvo dealer 1 year ago and have had trouble since cant get any help from volvo the car only has about 40,000 miles we feel very unsafe in this vehicle especially with our small kids in the car thank you.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo v70xc. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle hesitated until the accelerator pedal was engaged forcefully. In addition, the engine warning indicator illuminated. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the electronic throttle module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.

Car:2001 volvo v70 awd xcmileage:45,879while driving the vehicle on a controlled access highway, the car without notice lost power. The engine would not accelerate beyond 1,000 rpm and the car decelerated rapidly from approximately 60 mph to less than 20 mph.given the rapid, unexpected deceleration, it was quite possible that the loss of power could have lead to a very serious situation.after pulling off to the side of the road and restarting the car, it would run normally for a period of time. Prior to this incident, the car performed normally and no warning light indicators were activated.the car was brought to a volvo dealer, who after inspecting the car stated that electronic throttle control (throttle body) had failed and needed to be replaced. Cost incurred for throttle body replacement were $845.25, including labor.

Car surged periodically without gas pedal engaged. When coming to a stop or slowing down in traffic.idle was erratic and sometimes car stalled causing safety concerns. When car stalled it was difficult to restart due to idle dropping. Car has stalled when pulling into traffic.

The xc70 has stalled 3 times while driving over the last 2 years. The dealer has replaced two different sensors. The dealer feels the care is fine, the problem can not be readily reproduced. The first two times it stalled, it happened last year. The most recent occurred last month. My wife was driving the car down a four lane highway, and it just stalled as she removed her foot off the accelerator. I am very concerned.

Traveling on montana highway 93 at 65 mph my 2001 volvo v70 awd suddenly lost power.i pulled off the side of this heavily traveled 2 lane highway causing traffic behind meto swerve into the oncoming lane of traffic.the car was towed to the nearest mechanic, where it was diagnosed with an electronic throttle module problem.volvo recommends cleaning the module which was done.i picked up my car on saturday july 2, 2005 and on monday july 4, 2005, the car died suddenly on a busy 2 lane county road.once again i pulled off to the side of the road.now the only option is to replace the electronic throttle module at a high cost, $1000.00 plus.my car only has 57,000 miles on it.i have been made aware that volvo knows of this potentially harmful situation and has done nothing to repair this defective etm.the thought of causing and accident on a busy road when a volvo suddenly looses power is frightening.if you could please help in letting volvo know that they have a responsibility to keep our roadways safe. A sudden loss of power should not be a normal operating method.thank you allison beougher

We are having problems with our vehicle as identified in a newspaper article with our volvo. The dealer we purchased the vehicle from originally refused to correct the problem of the loss of power, stalling and other defects with my vehicle under warranty (they claims to have been advised by volvo that they could not fix the problem without a "reduced performance" light coming on) until i told them that if i was killed (the last time this happened, i lost power as i was entering i-95 north during rush hour and was nearly broadsided by a construction vehicle merging from the opposite direction) it would cost them a lot more than simply a repair. After threatening a lawsuit, they agreed to download some software to correct the problem.while the issue is not as prevalent as it was, we still have occasions when we get power surges, lose power and the electrical systems do not work properly in the vehicle.i do not feel safe driving this vehicle. The transmission/air flow problem is just one of many issues we have had with this vehicle - many of them safety related.we weretold by the dealer that they were aware of the problem through a notice they received from volvo - a notice was the kind that notified the dealers of the problem were not required to advise customers unless customers complained (this was the same issue with an internal engine fan which apparently can catch fire without warning - the dealers got notice about that, but the customers did not - if we complained about issues with the fan, depending on the kind of fan it was, it would be fixed under warranty - otherwise, we would be responsible for replacing the fan at the cost of over $500 - our fan, after we complained that it came on for no reason while the vehicle was parked, was finally replaced last summer by the dealer but they had to get "special permission" from volvo to do it.apparently, these fans can come on and cause the engine to overheat, and there have been fires because of it.

Low beam headlight failure.message indicated low beam failure.inserted new bulb in left low beam holder.did not function.to be certain that i had a good bulb, i removed the right low beam bulb and inserted it into the left low beam holder. This bulb, which had worked previously, now failed and i was left with no low beam headlights.the same problem occurred with my 2000 volvo cross country.

Please add me to the growing list of people who had their electronic throttle module fail on them while driving in heavy traffic.it failed on me( with no prior hint of failure ) causing the car to go into idle speed while crossing a very busy intersection.i called the dealer and they told me i could reset the computer buy a combination of door lock turns which i did.it then failed again in a very dangerous condition (sitting at a red light with a long line of traffic behind me) while driving to the dealer to be replaced two days later.it failed at about 94,000 miles but i don't consider this a part which should have such a design flaw.and if it is going to fail - the cars' computer should not cause the car to go into limp home mode.itwas replaced by the dealer at a cost of around $900 with a one year warranty.

Recently purchased volvo v70xc and was driving across the country when the etm failed south of austin.i was on the highway south of austin traveling about 70 mph when the car stalled out, leaving me with little control over steering or breaks.luckily was able to get to the side of the road.after a few minutes was able to start the car and limped to the local volvo dealer, where they told me the etm had failed and which they replaced.

Etm/ecm replaced 1/2006. Subsequent software upgrade 05/08/2006, 08/09/2006. Rough cranking idle.subsequent shifting problem with transmission. Follow up with software upgrade tcm on aug. 9, 2006. Problem still present. Transmission shifting jerks between 2 and 3rd gear upon acceleration/deceleration. Rough shifting with kick down shifting at speeds +60 mph.

1. Wife was driving on a highway @ approximately 45 mph. 2) engine idled roughly, stalled then message showing "performance reduced" showed in the car information screen. Car was able to restart, then driven to dealer for repair. It is believed to be an etm failure.

My 2001 volvo v70xc (purchased less than two months ago from a volvo dealer) suddenly warned "performance reduced" and lost all acceleration -- was probably going only several mph. The dealer determined etm failure and replaced the part, fortunately under warranty as this was a "volvo certified" pre-owned care. Luckily this happened on a quiet road -- but only a short time after i had been driving on the mass pike.

On september 7, 2005, my wife was driving our 2001 volvo v70xc in the left lane of a busy four-lane street during rush hour.without warning, the car suddenly lost power.fortunately, my wife was able to maneuver the car across the lanes of on-coming traffic into a parking lot.in idle, the car was shuddering.once turned off, the care would not initially restart.after a few attempts, the car did restart and we were subsequently able to drive it to the local volvo dealership (pederson volvo).in the interim, my wife talked with a service manager who said he was almost certain this was a problem with the electronic throttle module (etm).subsequent analysis at the service department confirmed that the etm had failed and would require replacement.when questioned, the service manager admitted that the failure of etms was under investigation. He also indicated that we would be reimbursed should a recall be issued.

My vehicle stalls with no warning.1.no warning, seemingly no events leading up to the failure.2.failure manifests itself in a complete shut-down of car.the car becomes a hazard wherever failure occurs, especially on the freeway.no power steering or power brakes.3.the car has been serviced for this problem on 6 occasions.dealer replaced throttle body twice, abs control module three times, and a wire harness, with no guarantee that the problem is remedied.

While driving with my 6 year old daughter at 70 mph on highway 58 in golden, co my 2001 volvo xc wagon suddenly lost power and i could only go 10 mph on july 20, 2005.i was able to exit and parked the car for an hour.it restarted and ran normally for about 5 minutes when i had a second sudden loss of power while driving 65 on 6th avenue in golden.the message center on my dash said service was urgent, so i stopped the car on the exit ramp for 1.5 hrs. Until a tow truck arrived which towed the car to rickenbaugh volvo in denver for a cost of $142.50.the next day, i paid rickenbaugh volvo in denver $982.53 to replace the throttle unit and gasket, and remove, clean and replace the crank case ventilation nipple and $272.68 for emissions service.

I own a 2001 volvo cross-country.i was driving at 65 miles per hour on interstate 95 between baltimore and washington when my car starting shaking violently and stopped driving.suffice to say, this incident was extremely scary.the car was towed to a volvo dealer.the mechanic advised that the electronic throttle was defective.the repair cost me $1,300.i was unhappy to learn that volvo is well aware of this problem, but will not issue a recall or reimburse consumers for this repair.

In august of 2004 while traveling at highway speed, my 2001 volvo v70 xc began to buck violently and slowed to a crawl. This was sudden, with no preliminary hint that anything was wrong. The incident could very well have caused a serious accident had there been any other traffic on the highway at the time. Subsequently, the problem was diagnosed at smart motors volvo in madison, wisconsin, as a failed throttle body. The replacement part and labor cost $934.25. The highly experienced volvo mechanic suggested that such throttle body failures were, in his experience, more common in colder climates where fuel additives to prevent ice in the fuel line were present. He also said that other makes of car that used the same throttle body were having the same very high rate of failure.

While traveling at high speed on an interstate my car lost power completely.i was able to get to the shoulder safely and call volvo roadside assistance.my car was towed to the nearest dealership where it sat for a month because the problem couldn't be determined.the car was returned to me.about six months later the same experience occurred, once again while traveling at a high speed on an interstate highway.the "problem" was fixed again.my car has been in and out of the dealership for various reasons for years.when i was finally fed up with it and decided to sell it, it needed more electrical work.the service manager at a dealership listened to the problems i had with the car over the years and felt that it warranted a call to the volvo rep.i gave him all work orders which i have from the purchase date of the car.he was told by the volvo rep that since all repair work had not been done at a volvo dealership they couldn't help me.normal work such as oil changes, etc. Were done by a mechanic who only works on saabs and volvos.upon looking for the names of volvo execs that i could write a letter to i stumbled on a website about volvo problems and people who were trying to hold the company accountable for mechanical failures of any type.i wrote to the individual who started the website and he suggested that i send my e-mail to stephen mchenry at nhtsa which i did.after trying for many days to do so and failing to connect because of some problem with the message trying to reach mr. Mchenry i just let it go.we need to sell the car because we can't afford to fix all that needs to be repaired.the problem is how do i sell a car that needs over a thousand dollars of work?i am forwarding the e-mail i tried to send to stephen mchenry to your e-mail address.what can i do?am i too late in reporting this?what do you advise me to do?thank you for your consideration.susan k. 1) electronic throttle module (etm) shuts down the gas pedal where you have no control on acceleration2) etm shutdown could cause a major accident3) replace the etm at $1100the owners should have been notified under warranty to clean the etm.

1. We noticed that car idled irregularly at stops and seemed like it was going to stall sometimes. We were coming up on 60,000 mile service interval & thought that at that appointment we would have them adjust.2. Feb 2005 - we drove car out of resid. Development onto 2 lane road & car lost power, the check engine light came on, we were able to get to the top of the hill 500 yards after we turned out on road.at top of the hill we cut the car off to see if it would run better after re-starting.it took a few minutes to get it re-started (i had to push the accelerator down aggressively).the car computer said we were in "limp mode" and we drove at a very slow speed especially up hills to the first fuel station.we shut off the car for 10 minutes & got some fuel.after this the car ran ok but the check engine light was back so we called our dealer.3. We drove the car 1 hour to dealer and they said the etm needed to be replaced.the invoice also says they replaced the accelerator.we don't have the old part.wish we did.*note-on june 2 (with 61,000 miles) on a trip with family (2 small children) the car was running fine but just north of charlotte, nc at dark the car lost power in the middle of i-77s and we had to pull over to the emerg. Lane.for 15-20 minutes we tried to start the car thinking the computer might reset. Everytime we tried to start it seemed like it was going to start (not like battery failure) but then it would just shut off immediately.it finally started and we drove to the hotel with no problem.next morning we took to nearest dealer - university volvo.they ran diagnostic at a fee and found ecm codes 6806 (turbo control syst.) - 904d (fuel pedal sensor) - 981a (control module fault) but faults were no longer present so they said there was nothing to do.our home dealer - charlottesville volvo looked at the car when we got home and they couldn't find any problems.

Failure of electronic throttle module on volvo 2001 xc v70.the electronic module controls the throttle.the failure of this electronic at a high rate of speed can cause immediate loss of power or a surge in power resulting in a possible accident.this problem appears to be prevalent in volvo cars.the resolution is expensive ($1k).i am surprised that a recall was not made for this faulty component which has safety consequences.

The key came out of the ignition while still in drive with the engine off.the last incident resulted in the vehicle rolling backwards and crashing. Vehicle was totaled from the crash. Vehicle was inspected on 04-12-05 by a volvo dealership representative, who confirmed this was a problem, but declined to fix the problem.

Car stalls while turning or going over speed bumps. The car completely loses power when making right or left turns. It has also occurred in parking lots while driving over speed bumps. This usually takes place during acceleration. This has occurred on state highways, local, and parking lots. I do not drive the automobile on a regular basis; it is only driven occasionally (once a week). I consider myself lucky so far that nobody has rear-ended me.

I own a 2001 xc 70 volvo which i just bought with 133900 miles last friday april 26, 2013.the dealer showed me the maintenance records including a 3 month old california safety inspection report. On april 27, 2013, i was driving on a downhill stretch when all of a sudden, the car engine lost power, kicked like it wanted to jump ahead of me, all indicator lights flashed, and the car stalled and shut down rendering the brake and steering system inoperable. I had no means to control the car as it rolled down hill. I engaged the reverse gear causing the vehicle to stop. I called dealer right away. He told me to bring the vehicle to his mechanic the following monday on 04/29/2013. The mechanic inspected the vehicle and test-drove it and could not find any problems with the vehicle. He performed a diagnostic computer test and got an error message indicating an air intake problem.he asked me to bring the vehicle the following morning so he can test drive it more and find out more. While driving home, the problem recurred again, this time in the middle of a freeway. It was dangerous...luckily i was in the far right lane, so immediately i coasted to the side, with my hazards lights on and pulled to the side where the vehicle stopped itself. Imagine driving 80mph on a california freeway, and all of a sudden, the vehicle loses power, the engines kick jumps, and without your input, attempts to engage a higher gear but then stalls and immediately shuts down and the brakes and the steering wheel jams.. That is not safety.as i await for the mechanic to address this issue, i am filing this complaint because this is a safety issue. A car that passes a safety inspection test should not be abruptly shutting down in the middle of traffic and render the brake system and steering wheel inoperable.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo v70xc. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, smoke emerged from the passenger's side compartment and the engine caught on fire. The fire department contained the fire and the vehicle was destroyed. The contact did not sustain any injuries. A fire report was filed and the manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not inspected. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

7/26/07 traveling on i-77 and the car ran great. Suddenly, in same manner as car did approx 2 yrs ago on same interstate rpms dropped, car lost speed, no response at throttle, and within a few seconds we lost power, brakes, steering.since this seemed just like 2 yrs ago (we reported this incident in 2005) we thought maybe the car will start in 10-15m.after 15-20 m of attempts where car started & immediately stalled car did start and ran fine. Since 2 years ago dealers were unable to diagnose & correct we continued to drive that evening and again the following day.the following day the car stalled again on i-? near atlanta, but this time in more traffic with difficulty getting car to side safely.again car started like the evening before. Again-similar fuel level. We traveled 2 1/2 more hours on interstate.at destination and local dealer found no faults so no correction was made.after this 2nd occurrence we filled up more often 1/2 full or more.2 days later and 7 more hrs on road without any problem..as we arrive. Check engine light came on.although car ran fine we tookcar to local dealer 1 hour away.they said they had a catalytic converter error but they didn't have one in stock.i told them i wasn't sure this was the problem that was causing the stalling because it stalled 2x (+1x 2 years ago) before the check engine light came on.i called my local dealer to discuss and he said he didn't think the catalytic converter was causing the stalling.again, no definitive answers.after we left the dealer, the check engine light was off and it has stayed off.a couple of days later we drove the car 9-10 hours on the interstate to get home.again, i kept the fuel levels approximately 1/2 tank and above.the car performed fine.we are very concerned about the stalling.when i check other complaints listed it appeared that someone else may have had a similar issue with low fuel stalling.please don't hesitate to call to discuss.

I was in a2001 volvo xc 70, making a left turn when the engine suddenly cut off leaving me with no acceleration as i tried to cross a busy intersection.i had two kids in the car and thank god no one was coming the other way.the car then started to shudder and i turned it off.

1) electronic throttle module (etm) shuts down the gas pedal where you have no control on acceleration2) etm shutdown could cause a major accident3) replace the etm at $1100the owners should have been notified under warranty to clean the etm.

This happened while driving our 2001 volvo vxc70 station wagon.on a busy road, driving approximately 40 miles per hour, the car lost engine power and nearly caused a major accident.the power steering and brake systems failed and there was a great deal of difficulty to get the car out of traffic and to the side of the road.this was extremely dangerous!the reason this complaint is being filed is the knowledge that other complaints for this same problem have been filed with your agency.this problem should be the basis for a recall to address whatever fixes or changes are necessary to preclude any recurrence.

I have a 2001 volvo v70 cross country.2 weeks ago it overheated.problem being - a defective cooling fan.according to the dealer, this part is on an indefinite national back order.thus, even now, i still have no idea when the part will arrive and when i will be able to use my car again.the dealer has also told me there are a number of cars in the lot with the same problem.i am not alone.given that this part is defective it seems to me that volvo should be running a national recall on this part.i suspect the reason that they are not, is because they do not have the part and are not sure what is wrong with it.this is no excuse.from an irate volvo owner (one of many right now) who bought this car to drive as opposed to sit in the dealers lot.

Cooling fan failed while driving on a very busy freeway.the car overheated suddenly, stopped runningand had to be towed to dealer.the cooling fan was replaced by a volvo dealership.on a previous occasion in november 2001 while driving on a desolate mountain road at night the car stopped as though it was out of fuel.there was at least an 1/8 of a tank of fuel.there was a fuel line defect.the car had to be towed to a dealer two hours away and the defect was repaired. Both incidents created a lot of inconvenience and could have caused a serious accident.

2001 volvo v70xc - failed etm. First occurred on 4/25/05, but the car restarted. When it recurred on 4/28, i brought it to the dealer for (warranty) service. The dealer blamed a clogged pcv system for the failure (rather expensive labor that was not covered by the extended warranty.) the problem is accurately described in nhtsa action number pe05041. I would like to add my incident report to this list.

My 2001 volvo v70 xc with 44,000 miles began racing and stalling when i came to a stop; dashboard message appeared indicating need for urgent engine system service.i immediately took it to service center where they had to replace the throttle body.service center indicated they have seen a rash of this problem.

A whistle sound that the volvo dealer affirms but admits that they do not know what it is.the dealer said they needed someone from "corporate" to come and check my car out.as well, my vehicle suddenly jumps or feels like it is going to stall for no reason.

While driving my 2001 volvo v70 xc, the car stopped running and displayed the message - reduced performance mode.i got the car to the side of the road and turn off the engine.when i restarted it ran ok again.i took it to my volvo certified repair shop and they found in the recorded fault codes a bad electronic throttle body control unit (etc).they test drove the car and it stopped twice on the technician.once at highway speeds!i had it the unit replaced.this is a serious situation that needs investigated.two other cars at this shop had the same problem. Volvo should be required to issue a recall and fix this serious defect.this is a safety issue as the car loses all power and the power assisted brakes and power steering become inoperable.this is under nhtsa action number pe05041.

The engine performed a shut-down/reduction in power procedure while accelerating in heavy traffic. "performance reduced/engine system service urgent" notice appeared on the information screen. I had to quickly move out of the way to prevent causing a major accident. After resetting the warning light, i proceeded driving to get to an appropriate location to wait for assistance. The engine shut-down again.

I began having trouble at about 22,500 miles in mynew 2001 v70xc volvo.i noticed the car ran rough and shifted erratically and stalled. Then i next had a significant experience with a sudden loss of power driving on the highway. I was out of town and was forced to have the car towed and obtain a rental car and accommodations. I had the car in and out of the shop with stalling problems as well as "intake" valve problems resulting in erratic shifting and rough running of this vehicle.it took several years and numerous tripsto the dealership for repair.i recently had a very expensive repair done on the vehicle to resolve the problem. I submitted all my documentation to volvo customer service as well as the bills and expenses incurred with this problem. By the time the issue was resolved my new car warranty had expired ( how timely!)the volvo people were not willing to reimburse me for any of the repairs nor admit there was a problem with this model even though i had heard of other owners with similar problems.

I am an owner of a 2001 volvo xc70.it recently broke down in nyc with a "decreased performance" message shown on the computer as well as jerking and lag in all forward movement. The car was seen at martin's manhattan after being towed.they found nothing wrong when plugged into the computer.drove the car home from nyc to richmond va. During this time the car displayed a moderate lag during highway speeds when acceleration was needed(i.e. Hills, passing). Took the car into moors volvo to have them do what i thought would be a more detailed investigation.they also found nothing and said they "upgraded" the software.then, this morning dec. 24 2005 the car once again gave a "reduced performance" message, lagged, only moved forward with marked inhibition and would vibrate terribly when in neutral. If i can be of any assistance please feel free to contact me.

On several incidents over the past 9 months the car has stalled on the highway.it looses power and everything shuts down.once i stop it restarts.also, there are times when the car will not "shut off" completely but the engine will loose its power and then the rpm will rev back up suddenly.volvo has attached a "black box" to the engine and as a result replaced the transmission.the problem went away for about a month and it is back.the last incident was july 20th.

Car displayed message reduced performance mode.car runs at 2 mph.this happened while driving at highway speed!

(1) my wife was driving about 25 mph on a sunny and mild day.(2) the vehicle, suddenly and without warning, lost its power steering.the message center read "electrical failure, service required."consequently, my wife could hardly steer the vehicle.due to the low speed and straight road, my wife was able to stop the vehicle without incident.(3) the vehicle was towed to a dealership where a diagnosis is pending.the tow operator opened the hood to find the fead belt lying in the engine compartment.it was not broken, but had managed to slip off a pulley.

I have a 2001 volvo v70 xc wagon.the car was revving high for a while when shifting gears, i took it to the dealership, and they told me there wasn't a problem. About a month or so later the etm failed.i was being left stranded at freeway off ramps, and green lights when the car would suddenly die.it's a miracle i wasn't rear-ended! after a terrible experience trying to get the dealership to honor the etm warranty, (they only cleaned the etm they did not replace it-saying it wasn't bad enough!), a month has passed and now my transmission has failed!the dealership gave me a $5300 estimate for replacement as it is unrepairable!i took it to our regular mechanic, and he told me the transmissionfailure @ 70,000 miles happened because the etm wouldn't allow the torque converter do whatever it is a torque converter does, and that caused the oil to heat up and then the resulting transmission failure.he said there is no one around who will touch my transmission.i have to use a dealer to replace it.i am completely devastated and cannot afford to replace the transmission.the car is a lemon.it has almost caused me to be involved in accidents, and i'd really appreciate it if someone could contact me about what resources i have.you are welcome to test my car!i have read on the internet about others who are experiencing the same problems with their etms and then subsequent transmission failures. Please help!

The contact owns a 2001 volvo v70xc. The contact was driving approximately 55 mph when the brake pedal was engaged however, the exterior lower brake light failed to illuminate. The vehicle was not been repaired. There was a recall associated with the failure for the 2002 v70 model years under nhtsa campaign id number 04v051000 (exterior lighting) but not for the 2001 model. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

The left & right brake lights fail to come on when the brake is pressed. The high position light still comes on. This failure of the brakes lights can result in a wreck. Volvo replaced a faulty relay which corrected the problem. This problem is the exact problem that is addressed in a volvo recall (see below) for 2002 models of this vehicle.the recall should be extended to include the 2001 model. The rear left and right brake light relays may not function when the brake pedal is depressed or may stay on continuously. The high positioned brake light and all other tail lights will not be affected.consequence: if the brake lights fail to come on, there will be no lower brake lights to indicate to following vehicles that the vehicle is decelerating, which could result in a crash.remedy: dealers will replace the brake light relay with two relays of a modified design.volvo recall no. R131.

Was nearly hit in rear when coming to a stop at a stop sign due to failure of brake lamps to light and warn driver behind me.driver behind me skidded off to the side of the road.he flagged me down to advise me that the brake lights on my 2001 volvo xc70 did not work.for this i was thankful. Investigation as to why the brake lamps failed to light, led to replacement of both lower lamps and checking the brake light switch for proper continuity.brake lights still do not work.application of the brake pedal results in no power being applied to the brake lamps.the switch is supplying power but not to the lamps.further investigation has shown that there is a recall for the same identical problem for the 2002 model, nhtsa case 04v051000, volvo recall r131.the resolution is the replacement of relays manufactured by tyco electronics which do not meet the original volvo design specifications.my complaint is that my vehicle and others have probably been equipped with these same defective relays and, after calling volvo customer care, volvo refuses to resolve this serious safety issue by not including my vehicle in this recall, which is the first year of this model design change over.i am going to follow through on making the appropriate repairs for the safety of my family.

I was driving at approx 50 mph on a major thoroughfare up a hill when my vehicle suddenly lost power.the computer displayed a "reduced power" message.i pulled to the right, and continued to drive about 1/8 mile at significantly reduced power until i could pull completely off the road (my children were with me and i wanted to be off the road).i pulled into a parking lot, turned off my vehicle.after a two phone calls, i attempted to turn the vehicle on.it seemed to run fine.i continued on, dropped my children at school, and drove to the volvo dealer.their notes indicate:"...found that etm is defective and had internal faults in it.also found that the codes were set for maf sensor reading out of range.removed etm and found that it was cover with oil.checked banjo fitting and found it to be plugged, clean out banjo fitting, replaced etm and maf sensor down loaded new software into car.cleared all old dtcs and test drove car.car now driving to volvo's specs."cost of repairs:$1332.47ouch!the lost of power occurred first -- the additional problems were, i believe, a result of the etm failure or due to the fact that i needed to continue driving a short distance to find a safe stopping place.replaced:throttle body, gasket, mass air flow, etm reload.

Several months ago my 2001 volvo xc70 station wagon suddenly lost power on a major highway.car would not start.took volvo about 3 hours to tow the vehicle.throttle module replaced under warranty.june 5, 2005 car looses power on highway and stops in traffic.on both occasions there were about 2 gallons of fuel remaining in tank and computer read over 100 miles to empth.same volvo dealer takes position it has never heard of this problem.

Vehicle incurred minor loss of power while cruising at highway speeds followed by engine surges and repeated losses of power. Engine did not stall out, but did disengage cruise control and dash board did display reduced performance warning. After vehicle engine is shut off, the reduced performance warning temporarily disappeared and then reappeared after 10-15 minutes of driving.this engine behavior last about one week, and then the dash board displayed a new service maintenance-urgent message.the 2001 volvo xc70 was then drive immediately to volvo dealer and he determined the vehicle had a faulty electric throttle body and defective accelerator sensor. The repair cost over $1,075.00 to repair.

Car hesitates, reduces performance, and stalls during operation, cruise control also becomes inactive.

The events leading up to the failure was a rough idle (vehicle would surge to 1100 rpm and drop to 500 rpm) while at a stop. The vehicle also stalled twice while idling in park. I contacted the volvo dealership to make an appointment for service. On my way home from work the day before i was to drop the vehicle off at the dealership, the vehicle stalled in an intersection. There was a near collision due to the stall. I was able to restart the vehicle and drive it to the shoulder. I called the dealership and described the problem. I asked the service advisor if it would damage the vehicle if i would continue to drive it. He indicated that they could not make a recommendation. I asked them if they would tow the vehicle to their facility. They referred me to a private towing company. There was no answer to the phone number i was given. I decided to wait for the traffic to subside and drive to the dealership using secondary roads. I was able to keep the vehicle running by putting the vehicle in neutral and applying the gas pedal to keep the idle high whenever i approached a stop. When i was approximately 1 mile from the dealership, the gas pedal stopped functioning altogether. The check engine light came on as well as an emission service required message. I turned the vehicle off and restarted it. The gas pedal resumed working but the check engine light and emission service required message continued. I left the vehicle at the dealership (approx. 7:30 p.m. '' by this time they were closed). The following day, the volvo service advisor informed me that the problem was related to the electronic throttle module (etm). I was told that there was an extended warranty for this part (10-years, 200,000-mile). The service included a cleaning of the part and reloading of software. After learning this, i searched the internet and found this problem was typical to this make and model. It is only a matter of time until your reports will soon show an increase in the injuries.

1) driving in urban traffic over a two line bridge in portland oregon.the service indicator light is on for a tail light bulb out.i have scheduled a service appointment for the next week to have it replaced.2. The car decreases in speed from 50 mph to 20 mph in about 100 feet.traffic behind fortunately is far enough back to avoid collision on a very narrow bridge.i drive the car off the bridge and park it.it is towed the following day to the dealer.3.the dealer states that it needs a new electronic throttle module.i ask if this is anything unusual, and he states that it is not and they just sometimes need to be replaced.he esimates thecost at $1000 dollars. I complain about the cost and several hours later i am told the part will be free and i only need to pay the 360 dollars for labor.this all seems strange- i feel my life was endangered and perhaps there is more to this problem than something particular to my car.i get on the web and research shows this to be a major problem- including recent articles in the la times.in talking with customer service at volvo north america- it was clear they wanted to find a way to get it fixed so i wouldn't complain to anyone.i suggest, however, that a rapid deaccelleration is a potentially large safety issue and if as web research shows, that many people know about this specfic malfunction- then someone should commence a recall as soon as possible before someone really is hurt.i am having the dealer replace the part now.

Vehicle stalled suddenly on highway.reduced performance mode indicated on cpu. Car lerched violently.nearly in an accident when vehicle stalled on very heavy trafficed i95n in new jersey.2001xc70 with throttle body failure as diagnosis.this is a major safety problem with this vehicle and is happening to many many people.car was only 3.5 years old with65,000 miles.all dealer services & maintenance completed per manufactuerer.part was probelmatic for at least a year before it failed and dealer/volvo refused to admit there was a problem or fix it.i'm lucky my wife and kids weren't killed.

My 2001 volvo v70xc w/approx 91,000 miles stalled while i was accelerating from a stop light in heavy traffic -- nearly resulting in a serious accident as the truck behind me nearly rear-ended me. Also, because the engine shut down the power steering no-longer worked, making it very difficult to maneuver the car to the side of the road safely.my volvo dealer told me i had a "broken" electronic throttle module" (etm) which cost me over $750 to replace.since then, i learned on local ct news that there have been over 160 complaints involving 1999-2001 volvos of various models (including the v70xc) for the same throttle failure problems - which poses a very serious safety concern.i intend to raise hell with volvo about this safety issue and see if they stand up to their reputation for making some of the safest cars in the world by recalling these vehicles and replacing these defective etms!

Faulty fuel throttle component causing oscillating acceleration and deceleration at highway speeds.

Gas tank stopped providing fuel to engine, as if tank was empty, even though approximately 2 gallons remained in the tank.

Etm failed in heavy traffic last year. I have been advised volvo is not recalling but will compensate owners for the etm repairs. Go to the volvo website and e-mail them with request for reimbursement and they will instruct where to send receipts for repairs. They are supposedly sending letters but i did not get one nor was i contacted by the dealer where the repairs were made. I have had many expensive problems with my v70 2001 xc before and after it was out of warranty. They should recall asetm is a major safety issue. Why not?? class action suit anyone? i will never buy a volvo again.

Crack in the fuel pump flange. Same problem as dec 18, 2009 recall. Was fixed on 10/14/10.gas dripping on ground, inside smells of gas.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo v70xc.the contact stated that the vehicle would shake when applying pressure to the accelerator pedal at various speeds.the failure would only occur during moments when the vehicle was exhibiting low rpms.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was advised to have the transmission replaced.the vehicle was not repaired and the failure persisted.the failure mileage was 115,000 and the current mileage was 123,000.

At 148,000 miles, the vehicle transmission started to fail to upshift after getting warmed up (about 20 minutes driving) then failed completely in the middle of an intersection. Dealer said no repair/rebuild was available and suggested complete repacement. Estimated cost was more than the value of the vehicle.

2001 volvo v70xc with transmission problems. Consumer states that the vehicle felt like it pulled back and went forward. Second incident the vehicle decreased in speed and went from about 65 mph to 40 mph and then lunged forward.the consumer stated the second time the incident happened, there was no third gear. At a complete stop, the vehicle would not accelerate through first, second or third gear. It would start out in fourth gear which was tooslow to accelerate into traffic.

Transmission harsh shifting and going on limp mode.

Transmission failed to upshift when accelerated and failed to downshift when decelerated. Vehicle jerked severely when shifted from park into drive, or from drive to reverse, or from reverse to park. Automatic transmission failed.

At about 155k miles while driving down the road at 40 miles an hour the transmission on my v70 xc went out im told almost all cars this year model and trim have this problem between 20k and 150k miles my car is pristine except for this issue the transmission jumps in and out of gears lurches forwarddoesn't move quick enough to merge with traffic volvo knows about this problem and so do the owners of these cars and at a 4000 dollar price tag to repair or replace these transmissions who can afford that

Transmission slams into gear when shifting at low gears.shifting is violent.car does not accelerate smoothly or predictably .took it to the dealer , completed road test, and indicated on service write up " no slippage, operated to specs " , they didn't check for codes.i recall the service manage telling me " the car retains a history of how it is driven as the reason the car is jerking into gears 1 to 3." car continued to have flare ups, i was told by independent svc station not to drive it out of the our city. Va beach dealership continued to not be able to duplicate complaintthey found other issues with the driving of the car, fixed them, but none addressed this issue. Requested they contact the mfg , they wouldn't.finally , when the car was significantly beyond the warranty, i was told the car needed a new transmission.the signs were there which they ignored.i've subsequently read on volvo forums such as brickboard, and swedespeed"that the xc70's are notorious for having transmission problems.the software feature called stop neutral , puts the trans in neutral when the car is stopped.while this may sound green and good, it kills the transmission over time for harsh shifting when accelerating. ",i have researched this on safecar as well and the problems is pervasive in this model as it was in xc90 early years. Numerous too count on safercar.gov ; on http://rusmackedvolvo.com/about/ - faulty transmission blog: dealership and volvo north americas' involvement in resolving the situation.

2001 volvo v70xc with serious transmission problems. Consumer states that the transmission will lose power while shifting. Consumer states that it could be very dangerous when it happens while making a left hand turn.the consumer stated the transmission failed momentarily between second and third gear.

I purchased my car new. At 95,000 miles, the transmission failed. Because my extended warranty refused to replace the failed transmission with a new one, i took it to aamco to install a used transmission. The car now has 120,000 miles and the transmission has failed again. I hear consistently from owners, the local dealer parts department, and my repair shop that this failure is common in this model and year.my wife was driving the car and the transmission appeared to be dysfunctional.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo v70. The contact stated that the automatic transmission shifted hard between gears at lower speeds. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who stated that the alternator was not charging and there was a lack of power; the alternator was replaced. The failure continued and became progressively worse. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The current mileage was approximately 120,000. The failure mileage was approximately 119,900.

My 2001 volvo xc v70 transmission is also slipping and lurching.lately this has been occurring on a daily basis.i have had no accidents, but when it slips and hesitates while pulling onto a main road my heart skips a beat hoping i won'tlose transmission power with no way to get out of another vehicles path.my mechanic, who works strictly on volvo and saabs, has told me he cannot guarantee that repairs or adjustments would correct the problem and that changes could possibly make matters worse (i.e., complete transmission failure).i will be trading this car in to a dealer in next week or two.from what i've seen on this forum, volvo is not owning up to this problem. I have also had power steering issues since shortly after purchasing used.lots of noise in front and at parking speeds, total loss of steering power.

2001 volvo v70xc. Transmission lurches and slips. Vehicle involved in major accident in 2002. Volvo inspected vehicle and found no issue with transmission. The vehicle was inspected by dealer on two additional visits with same concern. Dealership could not find a problem. Took vehicle to independent mechanic who made an adjustment to transmission. Vehicle again lurching and slipping. Took to mechanic and informed a service report now indicated we needed to replace a valve assembly. Cost: $1,100-1,800. Call dealership and informed that the vehicle was out of warranty and they could not help. Phoned volvo cars of north america. Informed the only recall was on fuel pump and the only recall on transmissions having similar problem was on their v90. Because of the age of the vehicle they could not assist me in resolving this claim.

'01 xc70 awd wagon, with automatic transmission. So automatic that it put itself in drive when shifted into reverse. The volvo lurched forward at a daycare facility rather than backing out as was hoped a working transmission would do. Upon a cursory glance on the internet, this problem has been the defining characteristic of the 2001 model xc70 since built.volvo should be held accountable for the rubbish they are selling, and i assure you, will be held accountable if this same situation occurs for someone else and there is a loss of life. I have never bothered complaining about the random electrical issues that have plagued this lemon since we have owned it, random door locks, window switches, dozens and dozens of light bulbs burned out, but the fact that my wife and infant daughter were left stranded without reverse or really a functioning transmission, on a 90+ degree day, make this a cause i will never be silent about.

Transmission failed.i blocked traffic on sc 278 for ~ 30 sec.the check transmission light came on and the car did not move.i could run the engine but no power made it to the wheels.it finally limped to a parking lot.the transmission had to be replaced.carolina volvo replaced the transmission with a remanufactured one from volvo.

Transmission disengages at low rpm (at about 20mph) with slight pressure on the accelerator pedal - feels like the car wants to upshift to the next higher gear (possibly 2nd gear), transmission then disengages...the engine rpms surge to 3,000-4,000 and then the transmission engages with a huge clunk and surges forward. When coming to a stop without any gas pedal pressure, transmission does not disengage, but seems to shift into the lowest gear and surges forward while trying to stop the car at a traffic light or stop sign. Again, there is no pressure on the gas, the car automatically downshift making a loud clunk and then the engine surges and pulls the car forward. After a few seconds of the car trying to pull forward with the brakes applied, the transmission disengages the gear and returns to a "neutral" setting while the car is stopped. Transmission disengagement and engine surging are consistent whether the car is hot or cold and the pattern is consistent - always at low rpms when the car's automatic transmission either wants to shift up or down in gears. It seems like the issue is always between 1st and 2nd gears. At highway speeds the car seems fine.

Total transmission system failure in a 2001 volvo v70 cross country all wheel drive wagon model. I had to wait nearly six weeks for a replacement part because the replacement transmissions were on back order. The dealer even said that there was such a demand for this transmission because they fail consistently due to a software signal that burns out the inadequate transmission.this repair is costing me nearly $4000 on a model with less than65k miles on the vehicle.the blogs are full of stories just like mine. Most used car dealers won't accept this model because of this problem.it was the first year of a total vehicle redo. I would appreciate your looking into this issue.it seems to have affected nearly all the 2001 v70 wagons. I have tried to bring this to the attention of volvo north america to no avail. Perhaps you can helpall of us frustrated owners of this model!thank you.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 60 mph, the transmission kept slipping out of gear.the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who determined the transmission need replacement.the manufacturer was notified.

I have a 2001 volvo v70 awd station wagon. The transmission failed while i was driving with my 2 small children in the car.as i was lurching along cars were passing me at 55+ miles per hour, my family and i were placed in a dangerous situation and our safety was jeopardized.luckily i was able to pull off to the side of the road before i was rear ended or hit by another vehicle. I took my volvo to the local volvo dealer 2 previous times regarding my transmission slipping and the car lurching, both times i was told that a transmission problem could not be detected. ?? this last time they had to acknowledge a problem exists because the transmission went out.i only have 71,000 miles on the car and i now have to pay $4,000 dollars for a new transmission.my service writer said he contacted volvo north america and they would do nothing to help with the repair costs.my car is undriveable and has been in the service shop while we wait for the transmission repair to be completed. I have done some research and this problem seems to be pervasive in this model vehicle.volvo north america needs to acknowledge this problem exists and help to repair these vehicles, that jeopardize their customers safety.

Our 2001 xc 70 volvo has had a stalling problem that repeats periodically but that the dealer can't replicate. It began with a surging and the transmission shifting erratically. This was fixed with a software download but stalling continued. It is random occurring when we accelerate at intersections as we turn or begin. It is quite anxiety provoking since it could happen when we are turning and if a car was coming it could strike us and cause a serious accident. It is now off warranty but on extended warranty and when the dealer is contacted they do not know what to do. Recently, the local service rep for volvo here in fairbanks, alaska replaced a turbo link valve. It was replace only today so we do not know if it will continue to have a problem. It happens about once a month.

Vehicle output sensors codes showed up, and the transmission service light came on. Replaced speed sensors, and 4 days later, the same problem happened. The vehicle transmission service light came back on, and the vehicle will not move at all now.

Transmission slams into gear when shifting at low gears.shifting is violent.car does not accelerate smoothly or predictably, making it unsafe to operate.happens almost every time the car is driven.took it to volvo dealer, they recommended rebuilding the transmission (replacement transmissions not available).took it to aamco and had the transmission rebuilt.problem continued for 7 months.continued taking it back and they continued to work on it until they were finally able to correct the problem.

A week after i bought my 2001 volvo v70 xc the transmission started shifting hard, lunging between shifts and after about an hour of driving it was difficult to drive. The service tranny light and check engine light both came on after a violent shift from 3-2. Took car to lyle pearson volvo in boise. Nate told me the computer needed re-programing from volvo and an adaptive drive test was needed. I paid the $149.00 for 45min (wow)! the next day it started again, only this time all shifts were "violent"! i called a volvo dealer in a different city and they said the drive test was not done correctly. I then called nate at lyle pearson and he said to replace the b4 piston cover. 2 days later and the b4 piston cover was replaced and problem still occurs. When i called nate again he actually said " i wish i never even looked at it" and refused to re-do the adaptive drive test. Sending car to an auction. This is criminal.

Recurring transmission problem.car jerks and stalls repeatedly at low speeds.loud clunk followed by sudden acceleration or deceleration.dealer has been ineffective at solving the problem.

In dec 2005, my volvo was serviced at the dealership. Vehicle had 48,300 mi. Dealership noted that front and rear suspension needed to be replaced. Vehicle has never been driven off road. It is primarily a short distance commuter car. At time, could not afford repairs. Waited one year (feb 2007 - 54,000mi) and took vehicle to independent repair shop where they verified that the front low control arm bushings were broken off, rear sway bar link was broken, all parts needed to be replaced. At the same time, repair shop noticed that the rear differential hadfailed. Oil was leaking into the exhaust and car was deemed to be inoperable at any moment. Upon call to volvo to purchase part, it was learned that the dealership was aware of the issue w/ faulty rear differential. Dealership was out of stock on the part due to the number of differentials that needed replacing. My part was special ordered. Auto repair shop informed me that it was highly unlikely for a rear differential to fail on a vehicle w/ such low mileage. In addition, i went back through previous service records and found that volvo had patched a leak in the differential just prior to warranty expiring. In total, the repairs for the suspension and differential cost $4,600 and i was w/o a vehicle for 4 days.

Noticed a rhythmic rubbing type noise while driving and increases its tempo as speed increases. I took it to volvo of cerritos to investigate noise and was told that the angle gear assembly that propels the right and rear wheels is faulty so, i took it to an independent auto repair shop that specializes in volvo cars for a second opinion and i was told the same thing. I had the angle gear assembly replaced by the independent shop at a cost of $2,565 and i was told that the gear assembly was bone dry and rusty inside and the bearings were broken. The car has 114,600 miles on it and it gets the recommended service maintenance every 7,500 miles. There was never any occasion where an oil leak was noticed so i am assuming that this was a manufacturing defect. I wonder how many volvo cars of this model have this type of problem with the power train.

My 2001 v70 driver side heated seat burned a hole right through the leather.

I smelled something like acetone and did not know what it was.the driver's side seat heater nearly burned my leg before it went cold on the left half.the leather was burnt and puckered on the left outside.when i went to my mechanic, i had them unplug the element so further damage or injury would not occur if the seat heater were accidentally turned on.pedersen volvo wants at least $230 to repair damage i did not induce or cause wear to an extreme out of abnormal use.volvo should honor the quality of the cars it sells by repairing this dangerous mechanism that should simply work safely in good faith for free. This has been a pattern for many volvo owners, often including significant injury. My 2001 v70 driver side heated seat burned a hole right through the leather.

I noticed a hissing noise coming from my brake pedal.the dealer has informed me that it is the brake booster, but that it is not a part that neededreplacing.however, 18 months later the brakes are not responding at initial pressure. The car is also hesitating at acceleration and stalling at idle, making the car a safety issue.i am not the only owner with this problem as the internet is loaded with message boards pertaining to this issue.i am surprised that only one other owner has filed a complaint. I asked another mechanic, not with volvo, for a second opinion.he was surprised that the brake booster failed as this is most uncommon.for the safety issue i believe this should be and should have been a recall item.i cannot believe others have paid $1,200 for a repair to a part that should not have failed in the first place.volvo should take responsiblility for their defective part. The recall should be issued.

I am a car dealer and i just purchased a 2001 volvo v70 cross country with 57,400 miles at auction for my car lot. The car had a bad brake booster and this was confirmed by midas.the brake booster should not have failed already. I called volvo and the warranty ended at 50,000 miles and there is no recall campaign. I am filing this complaint in the hope that you will get enough complaints to force a recall. I have never seen a brake booster fail on a car with so few miles and i buy and sell a lot of cars here at my dealership.

Traveling under 60mph in center lane on dry pavement . Went to merge into left lane. Saw car approaching . While getting back into center lane immediately lost controlof vehicle- unable to steer as wheel pulled and locked to the right and car simultaneously started to hop across 3 lanes of traffic spinning out of control. Brakes ineffectual. Crashed into guard rail turning 180 degrees. No airbag deployed inspite heavy impactwith front side, driver side and rear of car.concern regarding unexplained loss of control .would like to preventfuture injury/ fatality.

The four bolts holding the left front hub/bearing assy to the suspension loosened and backed out.the initial symptom was similar to a warped brake rotor - pulsing during light braking.however, as the bolts continued to back out, one bolt fell out entirely, two became loose, and the last bolt jammed into the rotating front axle.the direction of rotation of the front axle was such that it caused the bolt to back out further and jam against the axle causing binding and grinding a significant portion of the bolt head off.if this had happened at speed - say 55-60 on the dc beltway during rush hour traffic, results could have been disastrous.further, it appears that failure of these bolts can caust the entire front wheel and hub assembly including the brake rotor and caliper to separate from the vehicle.volvo replaced all four bolts on both the left and right front hub assys under warrantee, howevger, there is not recall or tech bulletin on this problem - even though volvo is on the third generation of bolt design for this problem!!i should note that these same bolts and the same design are used on all p26 platform cars (s80, s60, and the 2001 and newer v70 models).failure of the bolts on the left side can cause severe steereing pull to the left when the bolt jams against the drive axle.the problem on the right side is similar except that the bolts will not jam the axle due to the direction of rotation.contact steve seekins at 703-418-8651, [email protected] (husband) for further info.can provide vin later.

I filed a complaint with volvo cars north america due to a leak at the hose and my power steering reservoir.i stated the following: is my car eligible for recall repair of power steering leak? my points of reference are automd.com and http://www.autosafety.org/node/39837 post for 2001 volvo v70 failing component(s): 016000 steering:electric power assist system, bulletin 229826 nhtsa: 10022614, action number: 10022614, service bulletin #: 229826 on 08/27/07. Also, under a warranty claim - labor op 64357-2, labor description "relpace suction hose, fluid reservoir, ps pump," with .4 hours labor. They responded as such, yet my car is experience the exact same symptom that has been identified as a safety issue:we have researched your 2001 volvo xc70, vin- xxxxx and may confirm there are no outstanding recalls on your vehicle. Your vehicle was marked for two recalls which have been completed, details listed below.recall 141 for an electric cooling fan; completed 09/01/05 at rickenbaugh volvo.recall 155 for a software upgrade for the electronic throttle system; completed 01/17/07 at rickenbaugh volvo.we hope this information has been helpful.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Directional control ofvehicle is poor. Steering inhigher speeds 60 + mphextremely sensitive and very difficult to keep vehicle in one lane.please provide any additional information/attachments. *consumer feels that the vehicle could roll very easily.

While driving to work i lost control of the vehicle while attempting a slight right turn while traveling approx 15/20 mph and hit a guard rail then a snow bank. Upon investigation i noticed that both front wheels were pointing inward. Original suspect was the tie rods. Repair facility found the rack/pinion had severed.

Dealer noticed problem during routine service, upper engine mount broken-replaced. Highway driving.

When i was getting out of the car very shortly after buying it,i opened the door all the way and started getting out of the car.the door started to close and injured my leg.this happens anytime the car is on a hill or when the wind is blowing.it happends on all four doors.i compared the force need to close this vehicle's doors with that of the other volvo we own and the volvo v70xc (2001) requires much less force for the door to close.i have also had two other people injured even though i had warned them about the doors not staying open.i have owned 7 other volvo models (as well as other cars) and have never had a car whose doors would not stay open.i have contacted volvo about this problem and they acknowledge the problem, but say that they don't consider it a significant problem that deserves their attention.

Front driver side spring snapped and tore apart the front driver side tire.

Car has approx 94,000 miles. Standard street and highway driving. Front passenger side coil spring broke. Dangerously close to tire puncture. Thankfully, this did not happen while moving.replaced both front coil springs.

Backing out of garage.left front road spring broke in two approx. 1/2 coil from bottom.failure was corrected by replacing both front springs.springs are available.rust extends approx. 1 mm into fracture indicating spring was cracked for a period of time before total failure.internet sources (including nhtsa) indicate this is a common defect affecting numerous 2001-2004 volvo xc70s (aka v70xc).some failures are reported to have occurred at highway speeds.there are also reports of the failed spring cutting open a tire.volvo is aware of this issue but, incredibly, takes the position that sudden spring failure is normal and replacing broken road springs is routine maintenance.please open an investigation (and order a recall) before this defect maims or kills someone.

Highway driving, no pot holes. Suspect metal failure. Replaced coil spring.

Highway driving, no pot holes. Suspect metal failure. Replaced left coil spring.

Both front springs have broken during normal driving conditions.on both occasions this created a traffic hazard when the car became suddenly difficult to steer and impossible to drive.the passenger-side front spring broke 2 years ago while driving on a well-paved, major thoroughfare.the driver-side front spring broke 9 days ago while driving on a well-paved side street.on both occasions the car was transported by flat bed truck to a repair facility where the part was replaced at my expense.

In april, 2005, i was traveling a short distance when my 2001 volvo v70 xc suddenly stalled and would not start for approximately 15 minutes.the message "low performance" appeared on the monitor.the car stalled on at least 4 seperate occasions.after four days of waiting for an appointment,i was told that the problem was with a fault in the throttle module.i asked if this was a typical failure with the car especially only having 43,000.00 miles.i was told that it can sometimes happen at any mileage, that they were not aware of any other cars having the same problem and that "sometimes problems are isolated."the car was no longer under warranty so the dealership waived the price for the throttle body, in the end i paid $400.00 for the module and labor.i'm shocked that this type of problem can happen at such low mileage.

Vehicle suffered loss of power on i95 in connecticut causing driver to have to pull off onto breakfdown lane crossing two lanes of traffic almost causing a serious collision. Problem caused by faulty electronic throttle module (etm). It is being replaced by volvo dealer for $1200.

Dt:the contact complained about theelectronic throttle body modulator. While driving the vehicle slowed from 60 mph to 15 mph without warning.there were a lot of noises, vibration, and exhaust smells coming from the engine.the car was pulled off the road without incident.the vehicle was left running initially. The hood was opened to see what the problem was. She could not identify the problem; the vehicle was then turned off. About five minutes later the vehicle was restarted and drove home.the vehicle was taken to a dealership for repairs at her expense. The dealership stated he could not guarantee this would not happen again, even after repairs. The contact wasnot the original owner.however the vehicle has been regularly maintained by the dealership. Updated 1/25/2006 -

We have experienced the "reduced power mode" on our 2001 volvo xc70 numerous times between dec '05 and feb '06.the vehicle refused to go over 15 mph until the engine was shut-off and restarted.this occurred twice pulling out of our neighborhood onto a major road, entering the highway while attempting to accelerate to highway speed and while attempting a passing maneuver on the highway around 60 mph.in all situations, we were fortunate that someone was not right behind us (my wife and 2 small children) when this occurred, as the potential for an accident is very high.i took the vehicle to my local volvo dealer, where they diagnosed a problem with the electronic throttle module (etm), but stated there was an extended warranty covering this component.however, instead of replacing it immediately, the "procedure" called for cleaning the etm and downloading new software.only after this procedure was followed and that the event recurred (storing a code in memory), would they be allowed to replace the etm.i picked up the car the same night and again, when pulling out of the neighborhood, the familiar "reduced power mode" message was displayed.i do not see why if there is a potential for repeated failure, that volvo would not replace the component immediately, since they are equated with vehicle "safety".the etm will now be replaced, but i cannot say that i will be any more comfortable with driving our xc70.

Car had a sudden loss of speed when driving on the highway. When the vehicle was restarted it would drive a little bit and then stall again. This happened several times. We were on a busy highway and i was with my 2 young children. It was slowly driven to the volvo dealer and was immediately diagnosed to be the "throttle". The throttle, gasket and hose clamp was replaced.

My volvo 2001 v70xc began to have a rough idle and would stall or bog down when starting out from intersections.this led to our being stuck pulling out into traffic and suddenly having a stalled engine ora car with minimal performance and a "performance reduced " message.i took the car to the dealer, he replaced the etm for about $1200.car runs fine now. This event happened numerous times, first in early 2005, part replaced in oct 2005.

Throttle control malfunctionnhtsa defect investigation #ea05021volvo v70xc 2001 placed into service on june 19, 2001. The car displays all symptoms of etm failure as described in the numerous online forums regarding this subject. The car lunges forward with my foot on the brake, lunges forward while slowing down and idles erratically as if i were applying the gas pedal over and over. I believe dyer and dyer volvo is attempting to "wait me out" until the 10 years has passed for the warranty since there is only two months left on the clock. I purchased this car used and took it to dealer on the very next day with these complaints. They indicated that the car received the recall service "software update" in 2006.they lied to me and told me that they could replace the etm but only after i paid them $600 to clean replace the pcv flame trap. The technician [xxx] literally told me, that if i would pay for the flame trap replacement, then he could get the etm replaced for free under warranty - that this "just had to be ruled out to satisfy volvo hq."i next took the car to northpoint volvo and they cleaned the intake under the 10 year warranty but still refused to replace the faulty etm. They indicated that the flame trap did not need to be replaced in order to receive a replacement etm but that "volvo corporate" would not approve a replacement etm - only a cleaning. Again i believe i am just being waited out. I also have taken the vehicle to an independent volvo-authorized and certified shop (volvo of gwinnett) who have told me that they are 100% certain that i have a failed etm but that volvo will not reimburse them for the warranty work at all - that they only let their dealers do this work to minimize the # of replacements. Every day this car displays these characteristics and volvo refuses to replace the clearly faulty etm. Am i going to have to get in a fatal accident and die before volvo does the right thing? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information

2001 volvo xc70 lost power in evening traffic in early november and was unable to drive / was towed for repair that night and next day car started without incident at auto repair shop / repair shop ran diagnostics and was unable to identify a problem (at a cost to me of $119) / about two weeks later auto began to lose power again so i drove to another local repair shop / ran diagnostics and determined that etm throttle was cause of problem and suggested i have volvo dealer do repair since part is expected to have warrant extended due to number of failures (at a cost to me of $79) / local dealer replaced part and would not address potential warranty extension (at a cost to me of $1200).

During accelaration or a downshift to accelarate the on-board computer reads "performance reduced" and the car looses all power.you must pull over to the side of the road since the car looses all power and shut the car off.once it is off for a few minutes you can start again and resume driving as normal.this has happened several times in the last few weeks.no repair has yet been made.

Volvo throttle body failure. 2001 v70xc.

While being driven, the car continuously went out of gear, lost power and had to be pulled over to the side of the road. The throttle needed to be replaced. Car was out of warranty and after negotiation volvo offered to pay 50% of parts and labor to replace the defective throttle.

I purchased a 2001 v70 xc in november 2004, with about 37k miles. It now has about 64k miles and yesterday (monday, april 3, 2006) is when she took a dive. I had just returned from a 1200 mile trip early monday morning.on monday afternoon, i started on an errand; backed out of the driveway and drove about 100 yards to the entrance/exit of our subdivision. This happens to be a busy intersection and difficult at times to get out. I saw a small opening in the traffic and i gave the accelerator a pretty good push.......and almost nothing happened.i just started creeping along at less than 20 mph.on inclines it was even worse.the first warning was "reduced performance."i turned on the emergency flashers.at that point i was wondering how to get off this busy road and take a less traveled one to the repair shop.i got off the busy road and down the next hill, but not up.the engine was barely running and pushing on the accelerator didn't do anything.next i backed/coasted down the hill and onto a side street, engine still sort of running.i decided to try shutting the engine off.it was difficult to restart, but eventually would with the same problems.i did this a couple of more times - start/ shut down and after a few more attempts, the engine started to run fine.i headed for my usual repair shop (franklin automotive) and they got about 12 throttle body errors and said i need to take it to the authorized volvo dealer - royal volvo.i am in birmingham, al.i took it straight there.the diagnostic cleared error messages.the "check engine" light was on and a "service engine urgent" message was present along with one other message that i can't remember. Royal volvo updated the etm software, and reprogrammed the ecm as part of service campaign 155.service advisor said that this should fix the etm problem and it should not require any additional service or need additional repairs. All this was listed under a volvo recall and there were no charges.

Electronic throttle failure on 2001 volvo v70 xc. Automobile exibited "surging" performance at about 90k miles (out of warranty). Dealer diagnosed etm failure as emminent; replaced etm at volvo dealer. Cost approximately $1000.

Only 2 days after purchasing our 2001 v70 xc with 64,000 miles with excellent dealer servicing and oil changes, it started idling very erratically, and would stall several times after trying to start it.even when warmed up, the idle was all over the place, running very rough.when driving, especially at lower speeds, we have to maintain a foot on the brake due to the surging and erratic idle so that we do not unintentionally hit the vehicles that are in front of us or at times must keep a foot on the gas pedal to keep the rpm's up so that it won't stall.the check engine light has been on since the first idle symptoms and the problem has been diagnosed as an etm failure.since the vehicle is no longer under warranty, we have not yet had the problem fixed.we feel this poses a safety risk and should not be an issue with just 64000 miles on the car.

(1) vehicle is 2001 volvo v70 xc cross country.this vehicle uses an electronic throttle module (etm) manufactured for volvo by magneti marelli.the etm replaces a traditional throttle cable and controls engine speed when pushing on the gas pedal. (2) on july 9, 2005, the electronic throttle module in my 2001 volvo failed as i was entering a highway from a complete stop at an intersecting street.traffic on this highway operates at or above the posted speed limit of 55 mph.i was accelerating at or near wide open throttle when the etm failed.the failure resulted in the etm going into "limp home mode," which caused the throttle to only operate around idle speed (approximately 800 rpm), and not allowing me to continue to accelerate to avoid being hit by approaching traffic.moving forward at idle speed, i was able to maneuver the car between approaching vehicles and coasted onto a grass barrier separating an entrance ramp from the main lanes of traffic.the car then stalled.the car's computer readout on the dashboard displayed "reduced engine performance" and then "engine system failure."this failure occurred without warning, and i was fortunate to not have been involved in a rear end collision.(3) don beyer volvo in falls church, va informed me that the etm had failed after only 49,000 miles.it is my understanding that volvo cars is well aware of this defect and is currently the subject of various investigations and lawsuits surrounding this issue.volvo has reported to the california clean air resources board that up to 94% of etms will fail before the vehicle reaches 100,000 miles.there is no regular maintenance to be performed on the etm.volvo technicians cannot determine when an etm is about to fail.drivers simply have to wait to be unexpectedly stranded.the replacement part is identical or nearly identical to the original etm, making another unexpected and premature failure very likely.

On eight different occasions while driving on the freeway at 65 - 75 mph with cruise control on, my volvo v70xc, 2001, has experienced unrecoverable reduced power to idle.i had to make emergency lane changes to get to the side of the road before the car completely stopped.i found if i turned off the ignition and started it again it would run normally.i think there is something wrong with the electronic throttle control module.the "check engine" light comes on intermittantly.

My wife was driving our volvo xc (2001) back from the grocery store.in exiting the store parking lot she had make a left turn onto rt. 24w in mendham, nj from a stop sign. As she got on to the single lane highway the car stalled leaving her without power in the middle of a single lane highway with our 2 year old son in the back seat.incoming traffic suddenly had to come to a stop in order not to hit her car.she was able to move the car to the side of the road and restart it and make the 5 minute trip back home.the car was not able to make the slight incline up the driveway.the next morning i was able to start the car and take it to the volvo dealer.all along the trip the felt like it was going to stall any minute.i kept a constant speed and did not take any chances with sudden acceleration or passing.after the dealer service department looked at the car i was informed that the throttle assembly needed to be replaced.the repair cost me $1004.52. (i kept the repair invoice) the car had 56157 miles on it and had just come off the manufacturers warranty.i called volvo north america to complain and they said somebody would get back to me. I then got a call from the dealer.apparently volvo passed the buck the dealer and all they told me was that they simply repaired my car.after reading about your probe of volvo cars specific to the kind of problem we had i decided to file a complaint.

2001 volvo v70xccheck engine light came on and a warning signal stating emission system service required.i took it in to the dealer and the electronic throttle module and the accelerator position sensor was bad. These repairs were over $1100.00 the car only has 55000 miles . I have read that these electronic throttle module systems can fail at any time and can be dangerous.. Thankfully i was able to go to the dealer right away. I am going on a long trip at the end of november so i elected to do the repair. The car was running ok when it happened . The warning indicator signal was the only indication of damage. It seems to me that this part should not be failing. For sure it should not fail this soon.

I recently purchased a used 2001 volvo xc v70. Since the second or third day of ownership i have had ongoing problems with the electronic throttle module. The car will often idle very low and then die, and when this happens, sometimes it won't restart for a while. Sometimes the car will start, idle up to about 2000 rpms then die. When this happens, the car usually won't start for hours. The car often lurches forward when it is downshifting from 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st gears. The idle speed will jump as it is downshifting, often causing brief loss of control of the vehicle for a short distance. This is particularly frightening pulling into a parking space. When any of these issues are occuring with the vehicle, it makes driving a very tense and frightening experience. In addition, this particular problem is not something that can be detected with an electronic diagnostic test (which the volvo dealer charges a minimum $108 "diagnostic charge"). Volvo knows this is a serious issue with the etm. Please hold them responsible for this defective part. I know there are many many people who have this ongoing problem with their cars.

Hello,i have a 2001 volvo v70xc w/ approx 67,000 miles.the engine stalled when pulling out into traffic and i was almost killed by a fully loaded dump truck that did not have the distance to stop.i have since had the failure repaired and it was the etm - "electronic throttle module".this is a known defective component by volvo as they are replacing them in sweden - but have not announced anything here in north america.i was fortunate enough to make enough phone calls to volvo to get them to replace the defective etm at no cost; however the new replacement will eventually fail due to the current / existing design.the etm needs to be re-engineered and replaced in every 1999- 2001 volvo.if you have any questions, please call me.thanks.

Traveling along i10 i just crossed the la border into texas in my 2001 volvo cross country with 60,000 miles on it.the car gives me a message of performance reduced and slows to 10 miles an hour.this is considered a limp mode as i learned later.i was in la taking a friend out of new orleans after hurricane katrina.traffic on i10 was filled with military and semi tractors.i put on my flashers and went 10 miles an hour for some time until i could get to an exit in beaumont, tx.i pulled over on a side street and the car died altogether.i was towed to a service station and hooked up to a computer.i was told it was the throttle body unit and i would need to be towed to houston to the dealer.the following codes were exhibited on my cars computer - ecm-9150 "throttle unit internal fault" ecm 9160 same ecm- 904c "mil requested by throttle unit" ecm 904d "pedal sensor fault" ecm 982a "control module internal fault" and ecm 903f throttle unit internal fault.both the mechanic in beaumont and the volvo staff at the dealer admitted they see this often.i called volvo today and they admitted that an investigation was pending.i want my case noted as myself and my friend i was evacuating from new orleans were in great danger as we limped along i10 in post hurricane traffic.just the night before we had traveled from baton rouge in the dark over i10 which is an elevated highway over the swaps.i can't imagine what would have happened if we had broken down then.volvo could not assure me that the new part they put in for nearly $1200 would not fail in the future.i bought the car because i thought it was one of the safest i could drive my family in.i am not so sure at this point if i made a good choice.

Driving on i-80 in california in busy traffic when throttle response on my 2001 volvo v70 xc suddenly vanished. Avoided several cars colliding with mine and pulled over to the side. Restarting the car cleared the problem; however, 30 min later the same problem happened. On the fist event, the car displayed "reduced performance", and on the second event, the car displayed "critical engine fault". The car was brought 90 miles on a flatbed truck to reno, nv, where a electronic throttle control mechanism was replaced. My concern is the sudden, and complete, failure of engine power in busy traffic on a 8+ lane interstate highway ... A serious accident was narrowly missed.

Dt:2001 volvo v70. B.vehicle intermittently stalled and lost power when speed was reduced.this was caused by a faulty throttle body.

My 2001 volvo v70xc has experienced severe surging at cruising speeds and at low speed accelerations.numerous times in a couple weeks the performance reduced warning light appeared during some of the surging episodes.one episode caused the car to stall.after restarting i made it home.searching the internet i found many similar stories and lengthy discussions about the etm (electronic throttle module) problems.due to the potential of complete failure and being stranded, i replaced the etm at a local dealer (the dealer recommended the etm replacement based on the engine history codes).the car now runs very well, but i'm skeptical because the same designed part has been installed that is troublesome.

Electronice throttle module failure.while driving on a busy main street the car suddenly went into a "limp mode".took it to our independant volvo mechanic and he hooked it up to vadis.then told us that it was an etm failure.i called volvo and they said there was ntohing that they could do since the car was bought used.i paid over one thousand dollars to get the etm replaced.

Dt: recently while driving 2001 volvo xc 70 along with elderly mother from oregon to californiahad a very unpleasant experience that could have costtheirlives.all of a sudden vehiclelost t power.had to siton a very busy freeway for 2 hours in 100 degree heat, and was unable to run the air conditioner or get out of the vehicle due to heavy truck traffic.the contact andmother were finally towed for 70 miles to the nearest volvo dealer.they were told that electronic throttle module (etm)failed, a $1200.00 repair.but they would fix the part at no cost to the contact because of california emission laws. When the contactgot homehedecided to do a little research into the matter, and discovered that volvowaswell aware of this problem ,but have never tried to fix it.in fact, the contact claimed that he was fortunateto break downin california or beingstuck with a $1200.00 repair bill because this showedthatvolvo wasdishonest aboutsafety and designsincethe part replaced in california was simply more of the same faulty equipment that volvooriginally installed, and were now under investigation about it.

Engine surges stalls at highway speeds. Fuel throttle body found to be faulty requiring replacement. Attempt to clean component unsuccessfully.

My daughter was killed while driving my volvo when it malfunctioned and she lost control.per the accident report, she was changing lanes from the far right to middle lane when she accelerated into the left lane, hit and bounded off the left guardrail, collided with a car in the center lane, proceeded over the right guardrail of a bridge, through a treetop, dropped 30 feet, landed upside down, and rolled repeatedly, eventually stopping in a concrete creek bank.she was wearing her seat belt but killed instantly upon impact.it appears she was not speeding significantly prior to the accident but unexpectedly began accelerating as she was changing lanes and lost control of the vehicle.i have had similar problems with the car previously but believed they had been corrected by volvo when they replaced the electronic throttle module.there were no other contributing factors in the accident -- weather was clear, visibility was good, roads were dry, traffic was moderate and flowing well, and it was early afternoon and my daughter was fine prior to the accident.i have had an accident reconstruction expert look at the accident report and available evidence and he believes it was caused by mechanical failure.

2001 volvo v70 xc customer states that the car would not accelerate and was shaking**nar**ccthe consumer stated there was recall on this vehicle for vehicle speed control and the consumer was not able to get to the dealer to take corrective action. The consumer stated the car started to shake and would not accelerate while her 2 children were in the vehicle. The consumer did not want to enter the vehicle for fear of an accident. The consumer's vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed the repairs but the mechanic who assisted the consumer in getting the vehicle to the dealer for repairs requested $60 for his time in the matter. The consumer stated would like to be reimbursed for the outpocket $60 paid to the mechanic. The consumer provided a copy of repair invoice.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo v70xc.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer because it was surging and hesitating.the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure.a week later, she decided to take the vehicle back and the dealer replaced the air hose.however, this did not correct the failure.she received recall notice number 06v441000 (vehicle speed control) from the previous owner of the vehicle.she contacted the dealer and they advised her to bring in the vehicle.the dealer stated that if the vehicle does not trigger the warning light, they will not replace the damaged part.the contact is concerned that they will not repair her vehicle.the vin and engine size were unknown.the current mileage is 71,000 and failure mileage was 64,000.

Engine running rough, "performance reduced" message.brought to smythe volvo in san jose - no problem found.one week later, engine ran rough and stalled while driving in the mountains (middle of dangerous blind curve!), "performance reduced" message.restarted engine, was able to drive home with several more "performance reduced" rough running engine episodes.returned to smythe volvo, electronic throttle module (etm) replaced under warranty.

The electronic throttle was creating surges to the engine causing a back and forth motion.apparently we caught it before it got worse and dangerous.

I got my car back from the volvo dealer yesterday after having them look at it yesterday because it wasn't running well.they told me that i might need to replace the electronic throttle module, but not to do it yet.today i went to drive the car, warning lights came on saying "check engine" and "performance reduced"the car would not idle after driving less than two miles and had to be brought back to the dealer (portland volvo, south portland, me).

Car hesitates, reduces performance, and stalls during operation, cruise control also becomes inactive.

The original rear view mirror has a special coating to make it unnecessary to flip the mirror up and down to reduce glare from headlights at night.the coating on this mirror appears to have "melted" while the vehicle was parked normally outside our texas home, resulting in warped, obstructed vision in this mirror both day and night.passengers seated in the rear seat appear to have elongated faces when observed in the mirror, and the uneven, irregular view of the street behind makes it difficult to focus and determine where oncoming cars are located.an area of the mirror approximately 3x1 inches no longer has any coating, but still does not reflect clearly.the remainder of the mirror still has the day/night coating, but images in this area are particularly distorted.

6 inch crack in the center of windshield from top then proceeding to the drivers' side about 12 inches. I wasn't aware that anything had even hit the windshield until the serviceman at the dealership pointed it out. Even then it was hard to see the mark he was showing me because the mark is about the size of a pinpoint and it is all surface like a scratch. My concern is the safety of the windshield that was installed originally on this car. Something so minute should not have caused such a crack if this windshield wasn't defective or improperly installed to start with. This is advertised as an all-terrain vehicle-i've only driven on asphalt and concrete roads! obviously, there is something wrong here. Volvo hasn't even tried to alleviate any of my safety concerns regarding this windshield. I question the installation & the grade of windshield used for this type of vehicle. This should not have happened so easily. This does not happen so easily on any other vehicle. Why did it happen on this one if the windshield wasn't defective or improperly installed?? am i going to have to worry when that first snowflake hits the windshield?? i need some answers!thank you for your assistance.
