I own a 2000 v70 xc volvo.at approximately 56,000 miles the ets (electronic throttle system) light came on.since then the car seems to have instances of acceleration hesitation. I am the second owner of the vehicle.i purchased it approximately three years ago with less than 30,000 miles from a private party.all required and recommended maintenance has been performed by the dealer or by trained volvo mechanics on the recommended schedule by both me and the prior owner.i am aware that this appears to be a frequent problem with the 99-01 volvo xcs.i have contacted the original dealer and received no satisfaction about replacing what clearly appears to be a defective part based on my prior experience with similar vehicles.the dealer said the problem could have a number of causes and that an electronic diagnostic test was necessary to identify the source.given my understanding of other owners' experiences i requested that they perform the test at their expense ($70) in the interests of safety and to help volvo better understand the cause of the problem.the dealer declined.my owner's manual does not discuss any required or recommended maintenance for the associated parts or system.i and the prior owner have always used the recommended quality of fuel (91 octane).i do view the potential failure of the ets as a significant safety risk based on the potential for failure at highway speeds and the rapid loss of speed in heavy traffic.much of my driving of this car is on freeways with 75 mph speed limits and with heavy traffic volumes.from the currently available research it would appear that this is an issue for which volvo should accept responsibility and provide appropriate replacement parts.given the experience of others and the apparent safety risk this does not appear to be a "regular maintenance/parts simply wear out" situation.

Dt: the consumer states:the etm light was coming on and the vehicle would lose power when this occurred.the consumer had to stop the vehicle and restart it.this would happen at all speeds.the consumer was the original owner of the vehicle.the consumer hadnot replaced the etmand had been told by the dealer that the etm was bad.(11/17/05)*sc

On 1/20/05, our 2000 volvo v70 xc with 74215 miles on the odometer started to lose power, and run erratically. The ets light came on the dashboard. We managed to get it to a local import specialist about 2 miles away from the incident. Left us stranded in winchester without transportation. Told import specialist to inspect and clean the etm module, which they did. Said they couldn't replace it because of the programming issues. Cost us. $121.85. Car worked without ets light coming on until 2/17/05. Took it to fairfax volvo on 2/18/05. They replaced the etm module. There was 75005 miles on the odometer. Cost to us was $859.66 parts and labor. Since then, the car has not had the ets light come on.

Bought used 2000 volvo v70 xc 3 weeks ago. Driving 35 mph when the car started shaking, felt like bucking & flat tire.then the car just died.etc (electronic throttle control / module) light came on.i was told it would cost at least $900 to fix and that only a volvo dealer could fix it, not my volvo mechanic.i was told by volvo over the telephone that this was "being looked into" that other people have had a similar problem.if i was going any faster i feel as though it would have caused an extreme safety issue.luckily i was on a back road in vt and there were no other cars on the road.it was also very difficult to get the car completely off of the road because it would not run at all.i could not move it on my own.

In january of 2005 the etm unit failed on our 2000 volvo xc70. It ran erratically and stalled. Alan byer volvo in syracuse replaced the etm part at a cost of $1100.

Dt: the consumerwas having a problem with 2000 volvo v70 xc losing power and then surgingwhile driving 20-25 mph.the consumer didnot make it up a hill . The loss of power even occurred when the car was slowing to stop and turning. This happened twice.then, it was surging and smoking, andsurging with no smoking, the car was wobbly and sluggish. Dealer replacedthe following parts; spark plugs, coils, thermostat, and the filters. Other parts have been flushed, this included fuel injectors and ignition. The car has been at the dealer once, a certified volvo specialist once, and at pep boys once.the consumerhad to pay $1300.00to figure out what was wrong with the car. The car has had 2 diagnostic tests done.no one knewwhat was wrong with the car. The engine light came on, and was turned off. Theconsumer contacted the manufacturer, and they pretended that they did not know anything. The consumer had all the necessary documentation.however, at this point,no one knew what was wrong with the car.

Have experienced electronic throttle control module failure on our volvo 2000 v70 xc. Part had to be replaced with only 85,000 miles on car.

As i was driving the engine would momentarily loose power, then resume & the ets light would come on. The ets light went out after a while. I reported this to my service people and was told that this was an intermittent problem and to bring it in when the light stayed on. This happened approximately 10 times and the last time it happened i had just gotten onto the expressway and the car lost power. I was in the middle of fast moving traffic and the car would not move. Many cars had to swerve around me causing a grave traffic hazard. I was very lucky that no one hit my car and possibly causingserious injury. I called for a tow truck and after waiting about 15 minutes i decided to try and start my , the etslight was still on. Fortunately the engine had regained power and i was able to drive off the expressway and bring it to be serviced.

Ets dashboard light on 2000 volvo v70 xc came on while driving approx. 35 mph. Car immediately hesitated and slowed to a speed of approx. 15 mph, then came to a traffic light and engine shut down. After several attempts to restart engine, it did start and arrived at destination which was car repair shop.traffic behind vehicle was stopped while attempts made to restart car, amid much honking of horns and angry comments. On at least four previous occasions within two weeks prior to this incident, ets warning light came on, and except for one occasion when car stalled but could be maneuvered to side of road, engine hesitated but did not shut down. Hence the trip to the car repair shop on this date. As i write this, the ets system is being evaluated and the throttle body is being replaced.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo v70xc.the contact believes that the electronic throttle module is a safety hazard.she stated that the vehicle will suddenly hesitate and come to a complete stop.while driving 60 mph, the vehicle had a sudden loss of power.all of the instrument panel lights illuminated and the power steering failed.the speed decreased from 60 mph to 0.she was able to pull off the road and stated that the entire electrical system was not working.the vehicle was towed to a shop and they stated that the cause of failure was electrical.the vin and engine size were unknown.the current and failure mileages were 51,247.

Dt: the consumerowens a 2000volvo v70 xc and at 30,000 mileshad to replace the throttle. Would try to accelerate and the car would not go, and thenstalled.had electrical problems. While on the freeway the car started shaking uncontrollably. The throttle was replaced, and the repairman told the consumer that they would have to replace the throttle again because it was defective. Since the car was fixed there was some hesitation . The consumer took the car to a volvo specialist to have the repairs done. The consumerhas not contacted the manufacturer.

2 weeks ago my 2000 v70 xc abruptly loss acceleration power, where the vehicle could not go over 20 mph and then stalled which lost power steering ability while my wife was driving on the highway with my 2 young children.luckily, she pulled over to the side of the highway and avoided an accident.she shut the car off and restarted with no apparent problem and drove the remainder of the way with her hazards on.the car had just been back from the volvo dealer after dealing with another unrelated issue approx a week earlier.i drove the car to the volvo dealer and experienced the same problem, but was driving cautiously. The dealer replaced the electronic throttle module which cost approx $1,000.00.i previously had the same problem with a 1999 volvo s80 t6, which i subsequently sold due to repeated attempts to fix the problem!!

I drive a volvo v70xcse.at times the car does not accelerate properly.the problem is most evident on highway driving.this morning i heard about an investigation into volvo wagons stalling.i am concerned about my vehicle.

Failure of electronic throttle module on 2000 volvo v70 cross country. Hesitation was noticed and volvo cleaned the throttle module, i was not charged. At approximately 60,000 the car would hesitate at low rpm and the etm was replaced at my charge.

Electronic throttle control (ets) failed -i had a loss of power and control the car is an v70 xc 2000 with 46000 k miles.

I have a 2000 volvo v70 cross country wagon. The problem began in december 2005. Car starts but immediately dies, starts but dies, starts but dies and then, finally, catches. This has happened on about 15 occasions since dec 10, 2005 and takes about 3 to 6 tries before engine catches. Car surged once while on the highway. I had the computer replaced in jan 2005 (before this problem emerged), the starter motor replaced (june), the thermostat replaced (january 2006) and recently the catalytic converter replaced (latter covered under warranty). I have only 75,000 miles on this car and it's beginning to feel like a lemon. The service dealer put me off when i stated that it must have something to do with the electronic throttle module. I don't have all the old parts but maybe either the thermostat of the catalytic converter. I can't take the car any distance for fear that i won't be able to start it. The dealer says the check engine light has to come on and indicate etm failure before they are obligated to replace the etm. The check engine light did come on for the 2 problems, thermostat and catalytic converter. I don't want to blame the dealer for failing to respond because they did replace the catalytic converter as an under-warranty item and they did seem to honestly look for the problem. But we all know the etm is waiting to fail and might even be in the process of failing. Why wasn't volvo forced into a recall for this problem? i'd appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

Vehicle went into 'limp home mode' on highway. Speed went from 65 mph in passing lane to 15 mph. I had to cross 4 lanes of traffic to get to the break down lane. Auto is 2000 volvo v70 cross country wagon. Ets system was replaced at 66,800 miles when this problem occurred before. The car now exhibits the same behavior at 122,000 miles.

I would like to add my name to the number of people complaining about their volvo's engine stalling repeatedly without warning.i believe this might be from the unit that regulates the amount of air into the vehicles engine. I purchased my 2000 volvo v70xc from santa monica volvo in october 2001 and it is still under warranty.over the last year and a half my engine has stalled over 20 times while driving without any warning.several times this occurred while i was driving 65 miles an hour on a freeway that almost resulted in serious car accidents.sometimes i can restart the car immediately, other times the car has to sit for a while, but four times i had to have the car towed.the first time the engine died on july 5, 2004 i had the car towed to a volvo repair shop in valencia, california.the next morning the repair shop called and told me the car started for them without any problems.so i drove to santa monica volvo on july 7, 2004 and their service department replaced the battery.two months later (september 1, 2004) when the cars engine died again while i was driving, the car was towed to santa monica volvo and the service department told me that nothing was wrong with my car.i told the service department that i did not want the car back until they found what was wrong with it.the service representative then spoke to a manager and called me back to say that my alternator was putting out low voltage and they replaced it. Then on june 30th my volvo lost all power again while i was driving and wouldn't start.the car was towed back to santa monica volvo where i was told they needed to do a throttle body cleaning and then replace the mass air flow meter for a total of $708.i bought my volvo for safety reasons and i have never felt more unsafe driving a car.i sincerely hope that your investigation leads to a recall of my volvo.it is the biggest lemon that i have ever owned!*sc

Car intermittently loses power and sometimes ets light comes on. Ususally in the middle of traffic.

Car began to run in an uncontrollable manner, speeding up then loosing power while shaking violently.my wife was driving with my daughter in the car. They were terrified. I drove it after she called for help it was a terrible ride.had this occurred in traffic on one of the many high speed roads around here, this could have been a tragic event. The following morning it acted the same and i drove it to the nearest volvo repair shop. It was determined that it was a failed electronic throttle body.the repair cost as over $1100.it was not covered by the extended warranty i had purchased for the car. I had the car repaired.the shop told me that they had seen many such failures in volvos at about 50k . They joked it was a serious mid-life crisis for volvos.i did not find it funny. It was a devastating, unplanned cost.i called volvo, they were not interested in cost sharing or any sort of help.

Sensors in vehicle suddenly report problems with multiple independent systems. Several warning lights come on and vehicle goes into creep home mode. System can be reset by removing battery terminal and will then work fine for some period of time before sensors again report problem and go into creep home mode.updated 10/23/07

Electronicignition module failure is coomon problem among volvo xc awd owners causing the car to stall out possibly in dangerous conditions like highway driving it happened to me so i searched on the net and found that it an all too common problem with this vehicle.

My volvo v70 xc also has required replacement of the etm - electronic throttle module costing $1350.after, like many others have stated, losing all power, shutting down, locking up, causing me and those around me a near death experience on the highway.i had the car towed to the garage only to be told they could not find anything wrong.the car continued to drive in a very unpredictable manner, losing acceleration, stalling, dying, another near death experience when it died in an intersection, multiple tows and several different garages, several hundred dollars of no answers later, one garage was aware of the commonality of this problem and replaced the etm.this was at ~65k miles.now at 92k and i am beginning to have the same problems-car dying, going into limp home mode-20 mph with no acceleration, another $1000 in repairs without any resolution to problems.it feels like the etm might be going again.this is ridiculous and dangerous!we are talking about cars that cost over $30000!!

We own a 2000 volvo v70 xc wagon. It was purchased new.in the last 4 months we have had the car into the volvo garage (tom wood) to have it fixed for rough running and failure to start. The first time we were charged over $600 to replace the etm and a cleaning. It did not help fix the problem. We then tried an independent foreign car garage. They cleaned the throttle body but again the problem persists. We now have the car back in the volvo garage because in addition to rough running, it now fails to start on a random basis.i read today about your preliminary investigation into this problem - your file number pe05041. I can only say that this is a real, and serious, problem. While we have been lucky that the engine failure did not happen at speed, it has caused major inconvenience, unproductive costs, and significant loss of time. Please pursue this investigation with all haste.thank you.

After a change of oil at the dealership i drove 168 miles. When i tried to start the car the oil warning light went on. I tried to check the oil level and a burst of oil came out of the stick pit.i had the car towed back to the dealer. We waited three weeks for a part to replace the turbo, but the mechanic couldn't find oil pressure. Now they are asking for 2,700 dollars to open the engine and see what is the problem or 6 thousand to replace the engine.i had the warning light on two times before, first time i paid to replace some sealers, the second time they couldn't find the problem. (i complained about having to add oil) their answer was that after 100,000 miles is considered normal.

Upon exiting the highway, after traveling at speed for 30 minutes, a knocking sound came from the engine.the engine stalled at the end of the exit ramp and steam was evolving from the engine compartment.the temperature gauge was at maximum.steam was evolving near the turbo at the firewall.the engine cooling fan was not running, but making a buzzing sound.the engine oil was hot, steam or smoke evolved from the dip-stick tube, but the level was good.the coolant bottle was empty.i tried to start the engine, the engine cranked rapidly, as if there was no compression, and more steam was produced at the exhaust side of the head.i pushed the vehicle to a nearby service station.the service station topped off the coolant bottle, placed the vehicle on a lift and cranked the engine.from below, coolant could be seen exiting the exhaust side of the engine.i had the vehicle towed to a nearby foreign vehicle service station for further evaluation.this station determined there is no compression in cylinders #2 through #5, and only 40 psig in cylinder #1.the timing belt is in place.the station believes the engine head is cracked or warped and suggests there may be considerable bottom end damage as well such as pistons, rings, and cylinder sleeves due to excessive heat.i contacted volvo cars and explained that this incident seems very similar to the current nhtsa campaign # 04v451000 regarding engine cooling system fan failure on 2000-2001 v70's and 2001 v70xc's (and other models).volvo contendsmy vehicle (a 2000 v70xc) is not included in this recall.volvo customer service was not able to confirm the cooling fan on my vehicle is different than the defective fan covered by the recall.

While driving my 2000 volvo v70xc on the highway, the car took itself out of cruise control and began to flucuate +/- 3 mph in speed. The ets light came on too. After pulling off the highway and turning the engine off, i re-started the car and drove home without incident.my local mechanic (hoshi motors of boulder, co) downloaded the engine codes (904d, 91ac) which he said indicated that the etm needed to be replaced.the etm was replaced on 7/27/05 at a cost of $908.60. The problem has not occurred again. The etm was returned to me and is available.this complaint is related to nhtsa action number pe05041.

At highway speeds (60 mph), on an uphill grade, the car was attempting to shift between gears.the car lost power and rpm indication began to fluctuate between 1800 and 2300 rpm.the ets light came on and the car continued to intermittently lose power for the remainder of our trip home (roughly 60 miles).the car has 57,000 miles on it and sounds very similar to other complaints i have been reading.since then, the car repeats these symptoms at any speed in the two trips to 1) local mechanic and 2) dealer vehicle purchased at. *la

Our 2000 volvo xc70 stationwagon experienced sluggish speed on a wednesday - it did not like to accelerate.it was also going through oil, which the volvo dealership said was "normal" for a car of this age - it only had 80,000 miles on it.on thursday, the car would not start (it was very cold).we took the car to the repair shop and they found that it has oil pump problem that does not get oil into the engine.we therefore need a new engine.he also noted issues with the drive train.

On a trip alone to virginia from louisville ky when car slowed down and the check engine light came on.i was in a desolate part of the mountains in w.va when this occurred. I immediately called the dealer in louisville, ky where i had purchased the vehicle and after explaining the situation they told me to not pull over or stop but to keep going,i could not get the car to go over about 45 mph, and they would look up the closest dealership to where i was going and call me back. They did this and it was charlottesville va which was an hour from my destination. They would not be open until the following day so i called them and took my car to them and they replaced the mass air flow part #8670263-6 for a total of $268.45 on 12/3/04. When i returned to louisville and told my dealership there was no offer to reimburse me for this expense. I had 62,064 miles on my v70xc wagon at that time and no warranty was in effect.i read an article about this in the courier-journal newspaper today, august 2, 2005 and felt like there are probably many, many more complaints thatyou have not been contacted about.if i can supply you with any other information please don't hesitate to contact me. I do a great deal of highway travel and am alone so i bought this car so that i would be safe on all of my highway trips.

My 2000 volvo xc70 developed a dangerous engine condition that needs to be reported and corrected. The dashboard indicated a red ets light which according to the owners manual needs to be diagnosed by a certified volvo mechanic. I took the car to an independent volvo garage who identified the problem as a throttle body malfunction in the intake of the engine. The garage made a temporary ($300) repair and recommended that i visit a volvo dealer and warned that an appropriate repair would cost as much as $1,000 including parts and labor. According to the various volvo forums, this is a common and costly problem with these volvos. The symptoms include hesitation when accelerating, fluctuating idle rpm and outright stalling. This is a dangerous condition. I have parked the car until i can be reasonably assured that this can be suitably repaired preferably at volvo expense.

Electronic throttle module etm causing hesitation while driving in heavy traffic.volvo dealers service manager suggested bringing the car back while the ets warning light was still on.stated that the etm should be cleaned every 30k miles or replaced.nothing in the service manual mentions this type of service.the hesitation was intermittent but very uncomfortable driving while it was happening.

Ets light goes on and car does not get sufficient gas.

I own a 2000 volvo cross country xc 70 that has experienced stalling and loss of power on several occasions. I contacted the dealer i purchased the car from and they informed me that it was a common problem with volvo's between the mileage of 35,000 and 45,000 miles. They also informed me that the repair was not covered under any recalls or extended warranty. A search of complaints on this type of vehicle on the internet show that there is an above average of failures of what is referred to as the "electronic throttle system". I feel that this is something that volvo is aware of but refuses to help the customer with. In my opinion, a $1,300 to $1,600 repair is not normal. Volvo/ford needs to address this issue and recall these vehicles as soon as possible.

Hence the trip to the car repair shop on this date. As i write this, the ets system is being evaluated and the throttle body is being replaced.

My son's 2000 volvo 70 xc failed due to a failied electronic throttle module (etm). As a retired engineer i wanted to know why. I have found that it is a common complaint for the 1999, 2000 and 2001 series 60,70 and 80 modelsat the time of failure the car first exhibits hesitation, surging and erattic idle. At failure it goes into a limp- home mode of 20 miles per hour or stalls. From your web site i have found 101 cases listed for this failure.i have performed failure analysis on 5 units and have identified the problem. It is the wearing out of the throttle position sensor potentiomenter. Volvo has consistantly kept the dealers and customers in the dark and blamed the problem on a dirty throttle bore and other erroneous causes. Other than the cost of repairs, about $1000, is the realization that the replacement part is of the same design and it too will fail, one correspondent reporting 3 failures of the same type. The failure appears to be accelerated by heat, thus northern tier states have fewer failures than southern states. There are about 860,000 carsworld wide with over 250,000 in the us. I estimate that more than 80% will fail, one or moer times, within 100,000 miles. To date no one has been injureid or killed that we know of but stalling on a busy freeway is a dangerous situation.i can send you my reports or you can pick them up off of the internet. I also have failed parts for your examination.please have an investigator contact me.with a direct e-mail address for the investigator i can send my data.don willson, 970 266-9797, [email protected]

Our 2000 volvo v70xc ets light came while driving in traffic and i lost control of the car. I could not accelerate and had a truck bearing down on me and my family in the car. I had to coast to a stop and pull over and shut car off in a bad spot. It would not restart and when it did the engine ran very rough. After a few minutes i restarted the car and was able to make it home but with not much faith in my car. The car has been very well cared for and has low miles. Dealer says it needs a new etm and will cost upwards of $1000.

1.our 2000 volvo v70 cross country se with just 67,000 miles on the odometer had surging when under constant throttle on the road.this was followed shortly by having severe throttle response such as having the car abruptly slowed from 55 mph to 10 mph at a constant throttle.my wife, coming home from work late at night, had to drive at a very unsafe 10 mph on a major road.this could have caused an accident had there been heavier traffic.luckily there was not much traffic, and she could pull over to let faster cars pass.2. The v70 had a etm warning light lit up intermittently on the dashboard during the surging period as well constantly when she had to drive home at 10 mph with the accelerator pedal floored.3.darling volvo in bangor maine indicated that the cause was the electronic throttle module and associated parts which were failing and needed replacement.4. Darlings volvo estimated the cost to be over $1000 for the repair, parts and labor.we were told that this part can not just be repaired but must be replaced with a new part. Another volvo dealer, goodwins volvo in topsham maine said the repair was also about $1000.darlings volvo said that volvo would not assist in the repair, even though i told them that i had read on the internet that this was a problem that was occurringwith volvos of this model year to a great extent.5. After paying for the entire cost of the repair ($1050.48) i was told when i picked up the car that this problem will probably reoccur as the throttle body has design problems that will cause the problem once again.even though so far the car is working fine, knowing that the problem is going to happen again (more $), makes us discouraged about keeping this vehicle as it has cost us too much already for this needless repair that volvo should have taken care of.it does not lend itself to trust any more, especially for a car with only 67,000 miles on it.

While driving vehicle the fuel line failed in region between fire wall and engine approximately in last foot of pressurized fuel delivery line.another driver detected flow of liquid onto ground below vehicle and alerted me.i pulled vehicle into parking lot and evaluated source of leak.i thought it was possible transmission fluid because i recently had a transmission failure and had volvo replace the transmission.fuel had sprayed on shield over exhaust and onto frame member then onto ground.had the other vehicle driver failed to alert me i could have been killed if the large fuel puddle ignited under the vehicle.i had the vehicle towed to a volvo dealer after the fuel puddles evaporated.the dealer placed a splice in the fuel line after removing part of its covering.the repair staff believed the cause was a weakening of the line due to a possible rodent bite on the line.

While traveling on the highway ets light in our 2000 volvo v70 xc came on and the engine lost power, causing the car to slow precipitously.had i been on the expressway, this would have been extremely dangerous.as it was, we needed to finish our trip at under 50 mph.the vehicle has only 55000 miles on it.volvo refuses to talk to me about it, since i haven't been having the car serviced by a dealer.this seems very early for this kind of failure.i note at least two other references to similar failures with the v70.

My 2000 volvo v70xc ets light came on and mycar engine rpms. Were limited to 2 thousand . I had to pull over and shut off my car and restart to temporarily reset it. The dealer wants $1200 to replace the throttle body . The car has been maintained properly, has 77k miles and the throttle body has already been replaced once before 2 years ago. This failure creates dangerous conditions especially on the highway. This is an unsafe design and a known defect by volvo. Please encourage volvo to correct this problem.

Etm failed on 2000 volvo v70xc. First intermittently, then completely left my wife and grandkids stranded. Limped home eventually. Unsafe condition, no real warning other that dash light. Needed replaced/reprogrammed at our cost. 77,000 mile on car.

I filled the car up with gasoline and upon returning home from the gas station, noticed there was a puddle of gasoline under the rear right passenger side of the vehicle. Car now has a constant drip of gasoline so that it is unsafe to drive.

1.defective throttle body caused engine to shut-off on freeway. 2.engine died.had to "limp" back into dealer for replacement.3.new part installed. Old part available. Check engine light came on and vehicle engine began to surge while driving on interstate 95 and lost power.throttle body assembly( part # 8644347-0) failed.it was replaced by dealer at cost of $968.37

On 7 december 2005,while driving vehicle north on i-94 in massachusetts at a speed of 65 mph, suddenly the engine hesitated and lost power.etc light on dashboard illuminated.i was able to take evasive action and pulled over to the side of the highway.went to the local volvo dealer in south deerfield mass. To have the car examined.dealer stated that they "cleaned the etm and cleared fault codes."drove the car back home (upper marlboro,md) on the evening of 8 december.along the route home the car repeatedly hesitated.on 9 december, on andrews afb, etc light illuminated and car immediately lost power and stalled. Car restarted.on south osborne rd in upper marlboro while driving at 40 mph, car lost power with no warning again.i had to literally drive the vehicle off the road to avoid being rear ended by approaching traffic.car is at martens volvo in bethesda, md.the etm is scheduled to be replaced.dealer in massachusetts and maryland state that the etms in this model car is defective.

Pulling out of physical therapy parking lotunto south park ave. In hamburg ny 14075, engine stalled in middle lane. 2000 volvo v70xc rear latch failure.my xc wagon has experienced intermittent rear latch failures since 2002. The problem only used to occur during the winters, which account for 3 months a year in ma. I brought it it to my volvo dealer, barry's volvo of dartmouth, ma on 2/17/2004.since they were testing it in their heated garage, of course, the problem was not reproduced.they lubed the latch and sent the car home.we dealt with it for a year and then i found the tsbs on the internet, thanks to brickyard.com and the nhtsa.i have since tried two more times to get my dealer to repair the latch as now the latch fails just about every time i close the rear trunk.i fear for my children's safety as well as my pet, who rides in the rear, and any belongings we place back there.i have called volvo na and was told they would make sure my dealer would remedy the problem.i called the dealer again and they said there was no safety issue, recall or whatever for my car and they would gladly fix it at my expense.i've finnaly had enough and decided to file a complaint with the nhtsa since there is a documented problem with this car, nhtsa00v239000

I purchased a 2000 volvo v70, 5dr, wagon a/t awd, vin: [xxx] from putnam volvo 3 california drive burlingame ca., an authorized volvo dealership and repair service provider.jan 14, 2000.all warranty and subsequent routine service was performed on the vehicle by putnam volvo thru may 2004.shortly after purchase of the vehicle my wife and i discover that the rear hatch latch would not properly engage, fasten or lock under cold temperature conditions meaning temperatures near or below freezing (32? f or 0?c). We reported the problem at the first scheduled maintenance service and periodically thereafter during scheduled maintenance service calls particularly during winter and spring months. We have a cabin in the high sierras where temperatures are below freezing during winter ski season. The rear hatch latch simply does not engage and the hatch can not be secured closed under cold conditions.i recently discovered nhtsa campaign id number : 00v239000 concerning the latches/ locks/linkages:tailgate:latch describing the problem we have repeatable experienced with our vehicle afflicting volvo of the same year and model line as ours.i contacted the putnam volvo service and requested replacement of the rear hatch latch of our vehicle based upon identifiedrecall campaign. The service personnel performed a vin search provided by volvo, and asserted that our vehicle did not have the incorrectly manufacture rear hatch latch. Not did the service personnel offer to investigate whether the problem described in the recall campaign was in fact afflicting the vehicle, and even denied awareness of the recall campaign.updated 07/18/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

There is a current recall on hatch door latches on 2000 volvo v70's.i have a 2000 volvo v70 xc and the volvo people are telling me that there is not a recall on that vehicle.i called a local volvo dealer today and they said that the two vehicles have the same latch systemour latch is not working properly and our idiot light now comes on telling us the back latch is not shut when it is.i am nervous that the back hatch is going to open up when we are driving down the road.

- while parking her vehicle the contact heard a cracking noise coming from under the hood of the 2000 volvo v70 xc.the cracking noise was due to the transmission angle gear cracking.first time the contact had to replace the angle gear was on 04/17/03 at 64,745 miles, part number was8601587-2.the contact couldprovide invoice if needed.the curren mileage was 148,000.

Cross country; as vehicle was coming to a stop at about 5 mph, applied brakes, and engine started racing.the consumer kept applying the brakes, but vehicle accelerated, and rear ended another vehicle.the engine remained racing.the vehicle that was rear ended had been pushed into the vehicle in front.the consumer then tried to shift to neutral but ended up in reverse instead.the vehicle spun 180 degrees in reverse, then hit a grove of trees and come to a stop.the brakes were applied the entire time.damage to the vehicle was unknown at this time.*scc *nlm

Sudden loss of speed and random stalling.

While on a vacation in montana our 2000 volvo xc70 had rought idle, stalling, no response to accelerator (would not go above 20 mph)and eventually would not start.there were no volvo dealers in montana for repair and a local mechanic instructed us to pull the main fuse to re-set the computer.this would get us going again but it would happen again every 50 or so miles.dealership back at home replace the electronic throttle module at a cost of $1200.there appears to be a high number of etm failures in these cars and it is a known problem with volvo.

Drive line angle gear failed, causing a braking effect on car as well as "sticking" wheels a low speed.car was very difficult to manuever when this occurred. Was informed by volvo this is a very common as well as expensive problem. Design was changed in 2001 as a result of this issue.

Consistent grinding sound when driving. It was driveshaft failure. 2000 volvo xc had only 56,021 miles on it and was driven 4 1/2 years when this began happening. Parts/labor replaced.

Angle gear broke in the volvo v70xc after 90000 miles.

Failure of the throttle control module on a 2000 volvo v70 cross country, bevel gear failure is likely as well, both are frequent failures among owners.

I purchased a 2000 volvo xc and have had many problems with this vehicle.i understand some of them are very very common and i was told i should report this to you.problem 1ets system light is now on.problem 2..had to replace awd unit. Problem 3 had to replace blower motor for heat/ac.

Consumer states he hit a pot hole which caused the right front tire to loose air, consumer purchased a new tire and he then questioned the mechanic about how much tire pressure was used, consumer was advised that the tire pressure was 28 psi, at a later date consumer was experiencing a vibration in the steering wheel, vehicle was taken to service department and vehicle was inspected and consumer was told that both front tires have cord separation and they needed to be replaced, consumer purchased four new tires and now the vibration is gone, consumer believes that the dealership is delivering new vehicles with tire pressure less than the factory recommendation which contributed to the fialure of the tires on his vehicle (continental).

Approaching a red light on slight incline, car stalled and ets light and check engine lights came on. Advised my service station that throttle system failed. Car maybe driven but there can be safety issues, as the car loses power without warning, which is clearly a hazard in crossing intersections or mergering into traffic and there are also emission related issues with gas mileage and exhaust system.to date, car has been looked at by two service stations, doughtery's automative nad stillman volvo. I have been advised that the failure of the throttle system in volvo model years 1998 to 2001 has become a fairly common problem. I have contacted volvo via telephone and an authorized volvo dealer to see if volvo has a program in place to correct a clearly defective part on cars out of warranty.volvo was unwilling to work with me.the only solution to the defective throttle system is to replace it with a new system. Therefore, i will be paying out of pocket approximately $900.00 for a new throttle system, a part that should certainly last the life of a car.

My 2000 xc v70 volvo began 'choking' and then stalling one day.i was able to restart the car and get to my destination. Incident date noted below is when the initial problem occurred. However the stalling occurred repeatedly over the next few days, resulting in replacing the throttle, which i now found out is under investigation for possible defect and volvo knows about it, yet fails to warn it's customers!!the replacement of the throttle was over $1000.

The first failure occurred in aug. 2004,fortunatelyi do not drive very far, because the car slowed as if it was stalling and then ran sluggish followed by the check engine light.at the time i was alone with my two children who were 20 months and 1 month old and thank god it was a side street because there was no acceleration. As i was on the way to home, the ets light came on.i called the mechanic who looked at it but the codes he came up with had to be fixed by a volvo dealership mechanic.the price tag for the first fix $1100.the etm was replaced software downloaded and brake pedal sensor was replaced. The mileage at the time 68574.today luckily i had not even left my driveway, i started my car that all to familiar sputter and the etm light is on againnot even 10,000 miles later.

During last thanksgiving break, my husband and i drove our 2000 volvo xc from new mexico home to fort collins, co. The morning of our departure, the ets (electronic throttle module) light came on, then went out. On the way home, the care shuddered and lurched, and lost power with acceleration. It took us 6 hours to travel 125 miles from colorado springs to fort collins, and we were trying to beat a snow storm. We literally limped home. It was terrifying. We took the car to our local volvo dealer, and the diagnosed it as a failed electronic throttle module. It cost about $854 to replace it. It was not warranty work, and the dealer said nothing about this being a common problem volvo was already aware of -- even when we asked. I now understand volvo has known about this problem for more than five years and has done nothing about it. I am also aware that some volvo dealers have been paying the cost to replace the units. We were not so lucky. Virginia mohr-callahan, fort collins, co.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo xc70.while driving55 mph the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to a local repair facility. The contact had received recall notice #06v441000(vehicle speed control).the manufacturer advised him that the vehicle had to be taken to an authorized dealer for repairs. However the nearest volvo dealer was three hours away and he has to pay for towing. Thecurrent and failure mileages were 60,500.

During highway driving, the car began to surge and buck.i was unable to maintain a consistent speed.i pulled off the highway and turned off the ignition and restarted.same problem resumed with ets (electronic throttle system) dash warning light illuminated. Currently i am unable to accurately control the throttle via foot pedal. I have just visited the borton volvo dealership and the service manager informed me that this is a common problem affecting volvos 1999-2001 requiring replacement of etcs ( electronic throttle control system) module at $1000.00+.

Volvo dealer-serviced 2000 volvo v70xc with @60k miles occasionally refused to start.dealership flashes chips.6 months later, at 67k, eletronic throttle system warning light illuminates repeatedly during 1500 mile journey causing volvo to surge & vary speed continuously.problem reoccurs occassionally during next week before volvo v70xc can be dealer serviced - planned trip cancelled due to questionable status of volvo reliability.volvo dealer service department admits eventually engine would just quit stranding occupant.since out-of-warranty, owner pays $1200 replacement of faulty electronic throttle module.owner obtains old part but no longer trusts volvo with wife & child as replacement throttle body same with no better guarantee against failure.

Dt:the contact stated while drivingat 30 mph, the electronic throttle module(etm ) light came on and the vehicle immediately stalled.the vehicle was towed to the dealership ,and they replaced the etm.the manufacturer assisted with the cost of the repairs.updated 01/04/06.

E-mail: the contactsowns of a 2000 volvo v70 xc thatexperienced theelectronic throttle module (etm) failure at around 100000 miles. Whiledrivingthree times with my wife in vehicle vehicle stalled 3 times. Fixed at walvo creek for $1,000.

The throttle was replaced, and the repairman told the consumer that they would have to replace the throttle again because it was defective. Since the car was fixed there was some hesitation . The consumer took the car to a volvo specialist to have the repairs done. The consumerhas not contacted the manufacturer.

In the summer of 2003 my wife's 2000 volvo v70 xc suffered a failure of the electronic throttle control system.i was driving at the time and the engine power decreased abruptly causing the vehicle to slow down.fortunately, there was little or no traffic in the vicinity of the failure so that i was able to pull off the road.i turned off the car and then restarted it.it worked well enough to get me back home.i got quotes to fix the system and was told at the time that it would cost around $1000 to replace the part.the car had about 80k miles when this occurred.i didn't need the car to be in service and so waited until the summer of 2004 to have it repaired.i was also pretty upset at the attitude of the volvo people who told me that the part was out of warranty (which it really wasn't since it is part of the emissions systems and therefore must last at least 80k in ct and that if i could afford to repair the car i shouldn't have bought it. The cost for the repair was around $1200.this failure, in my opinion, causes an unsafe condition.i can only imagine what the outcome would have been had i been driving in heavier traffic.the car would have suddenly died and if i were in the passing lane, there would no way to get to the roadside.no telling what would have happened.also, this part should last for the life of the car.i have never heard of a mechanical throttle system ever failing.the mechanical systems will give ample warning before failing so that corrective action can be taken before it becomes hazardous.this condition came on so suddenly it was unsafe.

Five years ago, we bought a new 2000 volvo v70-xc.it currently has 39,600 miles on it.starting in about 2003, the car began experiencing repeated engine malfunctions -- rough idle, jerky acceleration, stalling and, most alarmingly, sudden loss of power while moving.i once lost power on a traffic circle, which was truly terrifying -- especially since the main reason we purchased the car was the safety of our two small children.we have repeatedly had the car in the shop (martens service center on river road).initially, we were told the car was clogged with carbon and that the problem was essentially our fault for not driving it on the highway more often.now that we are past the warranty, we have been paying for repairs -- though on our most recent visit in sept 2005, when i mentioned the nhtsa investigation, martens replaced the etm for free.i think this is a defective and dangerous vehicle and it should have been recalled a long time ago.earlier in the car's history, we experienced a range of electrical malfunctions involving the turn signals, which failed for no apparent reason.because those problems occurred during the warranty period, we did not have to pay to have them repaired -- but the danger and hassle factors were still significant.

The automobile in question is a 2000 volvo xc70.i am the original owner.at 97,731 miles the ets failed.at the time i made a complaint to both the dealer and to volvo of america as it did not seem to me this part should fail at this mileage and at the cost of $1,050.58.since this time, i have had to replace the anti-lock brake system box and the catalytic converter at the cost of $2,900 (111,000 miles).again i contacted volvo of america.both times i called the response was "too bad".i am writing to you as i have heard that there is a possible recall of the ets and wanted to let you know of my experience with the ets failure.

2000 volvo v70 xc.proceeding up on-ramp and accelerating to highway speed.vehicle suddenly stopped accelerating and ets (electronic throttle system) light came on.vehicle continued at approx 20 mph but would go no faster.i exited at the next off-ramp (about 1 mile) pulled into a lot, shut the vehicle down and then restarted, in accordance with the owners manual.the ets light cleared and vehicle operated properly.the next morning, driving to work , the same thing happened.i drove to my building at about 20 mph, then called a tow truck to take my vehicle to the dealer.they told me the ets system needed to be replaced due to a critical fault in the system.repairs totaled $914.00.

The contact owns 2000 volvo v70xc.the contact stated that while driving 60 mph the vehicle lost acceleration without warning.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the idle air control circuit needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure.the approximate failure mileage was 190,000.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo v70xc.while driving between 20-30 mph, the vehicle lost power and the check engine warning light illuminated intermittently.the failure occurred intermittently during acceleration.the dealer replaced the gas cap, but the failure continued.the failure began after the vehicle was serviced for nhtsa campaign id number 06v441000 (vehicle speed control).the failure mileage was 74,000 and current mileage was 79,000.

The electronic throttle module (etm)failed twice on 2000 volvo v70xc.the first time it was still under warranty, the second was about 17, 000miles after the first. Both times it failed while driving on highway at high speed.both times engine stalled in traffic.both times managed to get to shoulder, restarted, and got home with car alternately surging and stalling the whole way.both times had preschool age twins in the car, and didn't feel it safe to stop on the shoulder to wait for help.also, would have had a difficult time getting them home safety in their car seats.then, had car towed to dealer for repairs.

Etm module failed on the freeway and i had to make an emergency stop on the freeway at night.after several minutes the car was able to startup again.when i took the car in for repair, they did not tell me that this was a common problem with this model of volvo and i ended up paying $128 dollars for bogus troubleshooting and no problem found.then less than 4 days later, the car died again, but this time i was lucky and it died on a side street.i looked up the problem on the internet and found quite a few articles of people who had a similar problem.upon driving my car into the dealership, it died and i had to coast the car down 3 hillside blocks and into the dealership.another $50 dollars was charged to me for doing the warranty work and the total cost to replace the throttle module was $723.67.i am very lucky to have an extended warranty on this vehicle, but for anyone that does not, they are being totally screwed by volvo and its dealers because they have not stepped up and replaced this potentially dangerous module that can leave you stranded.it also appears that the particular dealership that i took my car to, made troubleshooting money on me even though nobody would touch my questions regarding the problem when i showed them 3 pages of articles that i found on the web regarding the particular problem and user groups that talked about complaining to volvo.

Failure of the etm on my 2000 volvo xc 70.the car abruptly lost driving power in the midst of 65 mph traffic on a major highway.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving at various speeds while depressing the accelerator pedal the vehicle would not exceed 10 mph.on other occasions the vehicle would surge forward without warning.the vehicle was driven to the dealer who replaced the electronic throttle module.

Vehicle required a new electronic throttle body despite being only six years old and having only 56,410 miles. Vehicle was initially mildly hesitating and jerking, then worsened to the point where we were concerned for our safety. We had no choice but to go to the dealer and spend $1,078.93 to replace the part. (kbb values vehicle at $14,365, so this repair cost approx. 7.5% of the value of the vehicle!) worse yet, the part was replaced with the exact same part, not a newer/re-engineered one less likely to fail. We have saved the part if anybody wants to look at it.this is not why we bought a volvo.

While driving our 2000 volvo v70 xc, the throttle began acting strange, requiring us to press much more than usual on the throttle to avoid the engine cutting out, while pulling out into traffic.the car was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a faulty electronic throttle module, and i was told it would be covered under an extended warranty.the part was ordered, and in early january 2010, i returned to the dealer for installation.the car has been getting worse, and we have come very close to having an accident due to the faulty design.when the car was brought to the dealer for the warranty repair, they informed me that the car was 'warranty excluded', and would not be covered, due to the status of the title.my research has indicated that this is an extremely common problem, which there was a recall to recalibrate the throttle, but no recall to address the actual failure.this seems odd that volvo would not honor the spirit of the recall.

In january of 2005 i noticed surging while at highway speeds.brought vehicle to volvo of pleasanton dealer to have this investigating.no problems were found. No obdii errors. In april, 2005 i brought the car in again and asked for a mechanic to drive with me so that i could ensure he was detecting the surging.he did.i was told that the electronic throttle module was failing and that it needed to be replaced. I was told that i could not have the part as it was a warranty item.on-line, i found hundreds of reports of these parts failing.i am now concerned that while volvo replaced my etm, they did so with the exact same design... Hence i must assume that in another 45,000 miles the part will fail again.this part should be recalled and a new design must be instituted.

Ets light comes on.the electronic throttle system has failed at 71,000 miles.my car is a 2000 volvo xc70.

Dt:2000 volvo v70 cross country.while driving 30 mph the vehicle stalled and lost power. The dealer replaced the electronic throttle module.updated 11/29/2005 -

Ets light coming on - immediate loss of power. Very dangerous at 70 mph in 3-4 lanes of heavy traffic. I put my emergency blinkers on and tried to safely get off the highway. I turned the car off and back on, the light went away and i proceeded to drive to the dealership. Enroute, it happened again just as i was pulling to a stop at a red light. I turned the car off and back on, it did not help this time - an ambulance came up behind me. I was in a panic trying to get the auto out of the way. Luckily the left lane was open and they were able to blow past me, but they did honk as they passed letting me know they were upset that i did not move. I am picking up the car tomorrow from the dealership with a new etm. But i have poked around on various volvo forums and found this issue to be pretty prevalent. The repair is very expensive (around $1000 to the consumer) and the break down situation potentially very dangerous.

The ets (electronic throttle system) light came on repeatedly over a period of two weeks.on two occasions, on the highway, the car lost power totally when the light illuminated.the dealer said the car needs a new electronic throttle module (etm), which will cost about $1,500.this car has 85,000 miles, virtually all of which were highway miles as it is used to commute from ma to ct.a search of the web indicated that this sensor--the etm--was defective in 1999 and 2000 volvos.in july 2001, volvo issued a tech bulletin stating that problems occurred only when the owner made many short trips.further, the tech bulletins said the etm could be cleaned (but not replaced) if the car still was under the original warranty.this car has 85,000 and has always been serviced by a volvo dealer.

Throttle body failure on my 200v70xc. The unit has been replaced twice.#1@77000miles, #2@115000. This is very serious. I drive a busy highway to and from work. The faliure occurences on some occassions have been frightening in an effort to get out of oncoming cars ways. I have been commuting with my 22 month old for his entire life. Affordability and timing affects the opportunty when the time arises to get the problem fixed. This is a very costly issue. Therefore several failures happended in both occassions prior to getting fixed. The most recent time took two additional trips and the replacement of an accellarator pedal to clear the code and stop the ets failures for now.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo v70xc. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle began to decelerate without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. A trouble code was detected pertaining to the electronic throttle module. There was a recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 06v441000 (vehicle speed control) which was expired. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired by the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000. The vin was not available.

Throttle control module had to be replaced due to check engine light coming on and the car stopped several times on the highway and i finally called aaa to tow me from bedford ky which is approximately 46 milesto louisville ky where i live and where i purchased the car. The dealer charged me $403.88 which was suppose to be half of the cost. This was done 7/6/04 and i purchased the car 1/3/04.

(1) no warning at all before this failure happened. (2) while driving around town, car suddenly fails to rev above 1000 rpm even when gas is floored. Car will not go above 10 mph, and it takes a couple minutes to get there, so it is not safe to drive. Tries to stall. Ets dash light comes on. (3) etm part replaced and reprogramming performed, had to be only at a dealer, was without car for 2 days. I don't have the old part.

I have a 2000 volvo v70xc cross country. I had a problem with the electronic throttle module ( throttle body) according to many owners with 98-00 v70, c70, s70, they also have had the same problem. These parts aren't suppose to break ,they are part of the accelerator. My car stopped in the middle of the expressway due the the throttle body. It cost me a lot of money close to a $1000.instead of recalling these parts volvo has not, resulting in many failures, and is very costly. I do not want me and my family to b esubjected to that, next time we could possibly be dead. It has been on the news. Volvo agreed to extend the warranty, but the part is still defective, and should be redesigned, and put in all the cars that have the old throttle body. Volvo is suppose to be about saferty , seems to me they care more about themselves and there pockets instead of the customers and there families.

My volvo 2000 v70xc stalled in the middle lane of the interstate last night due to a faulty electronic throttle module. Fortunately, i was able to restart the car and move out of traffic but not after several "screeching" close calls. It is very disappointing to find out that this is a well known design robustness issue that volvo has chosen not to address. I have replaced the faulty unit at a cost of $985.00 dollars but their is no guarantee that it will not reoccur. Nhtsa needs to direct volvo/ford to replace/reimburse all emt units in the effected 1999 to 2002 volvo's to prevent any future personal injuries or deaths. In addition, volvo needs to redesign a retro-fit for the aforementioned model years to eliminate this problem.

Dt: contactcomplained about the electronic throttle system . Dealer wanted to charge him about $1,200 to fix it. Volvorefused to issue a recall.
