The contact owns a 2002 volvo v70. After starting the vehicle, a loud rumbling noise was heard coming from the engine. In addition, the vehicle accelerated independently and stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the throttle control and driver information module needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. Instrument cluster: service airbag warning came on and stayed on, shortly thereafter clock started going backwards rapidly, all gauges went off (came back with a smack to the dash). Found out there was no fault in airbags but the cluster's solder joints had loosened. (volvo went to lead-free solder around this time) volvo's fix involves replacing the cluster for $1200 for the part. I got a used one from junkyard and replaced it myself. Now it's two years later and this cluster is starting to exhibit the clock and intermittent outages. Definitely a safety issue as having no gauges is not good plus needlessly worrying about the airbag isn't good. Volvo refuses to recognize this as a problem despite it happening many times according to the number of posts on volvo forums i have seen relating to the same issue.

I own a 2002 volvo v70.on four occasions the power locks have malfunctioned.at times, we are unable to unlock the doors without the use of a remote control.at other times, it is impossible to lock the doors utilizing the power lock controls.the locks last broke on 11/03/2003.we have also had other electrical problems with the vehicle, including a power window motor failure and problems with a brake position sensor.given the number of electrical problems, we are fearful that this car may be a fire hazard.*la

Complete speedometer cluster does not work. No fuel gauge tachometer temperature or speedometer. I've talked to many other people that had that exact same problem. It cuts in and out randomly but that was in the beginning now it does not work at all. Could be a safety issue not knowing how fast you were going or how much fuel you have.i have ran out of gas a few times while moving since i don't know how much is in there. I keep worrying about getting a ticket since i don't know how fast i'm going

Dt:vehiclestalled andlost power talked to mechanic he warned consumerof stallin gproblem.took vehicle to a volvo for repairs. Dealer paid for parts and consumer paid for the repair work.

I was driving at approximately 6:30am, it was still dark, and my dashboard would not display. I was going about 35 miles per hour. I panicked because it tells me all the critical things about the moving vehicle. Then about 2 minutes later it came on. This non-display of the dashboard would intermittently happen when i drove the vehicle over the next month. I could not detect what the problem was. I went online and other volvo v70 owner had the same problem. It stated that the problem was the dim (drive information module). The problem exists for years 2000 to 2009. So i took the vehicle to my volvo mechanic. He said it was a common problem. The dim would have to be replaced. I had the mechanic replace the dim because i had no choice. I could not drive without a dashboard. I called volvo and asked what they were doing about the problem. They said nothing. But they would report it to nhtsa with their next report. I personally think this part should be recalled. I was surprised to hear it was a common problem and for so many years. It could cause major accidents because you don't know your speed, if the vehicle has gas or any other warnings displayed if the vehicle has a problem.

Volvo 2002 v70 wagon stalled while in drive on i-5.fortunately i was able to get to the shoulder despite losing steering.similar incident occurred in 2004 and the dealer cleaned the throttle.obviously this correction was not permanent.

My new volvo v70 with only 7000 miles almost took my life as well as my 18 month old son's life! i was driving down a four lane road when another driver motioned me to pull aside. I thought i had a flat tire so i pulled over.the car was on fire! when i looked back the car had flames shooting out from under the driver and passenger seats from the under carriage. Within 5 minutes the flames engulfed the car and the gas tank exploded! i was able to take nothing with me, i lost everything in the car down to my purse! the saddest part about my story is that nothing in the volvo warned me i was on fire!!my husband notified our local volvo dealership who in turn contacted volvo north america. On september 23, 2003 we received a letter from a [xxx] that stated "a volvo field technical specialist thoroughly examined your vehicle. There was extensive damage to your volvo and based on our inspection and available information, we did not conclude a volvo product related condition as the cause of the situation you reported." i am dumbfounded! i would like an explanation as to why my new volvo caught fire as i am driving 35 mph and then burnt to the ground!! i am extremely upset my the way volvo north america responded to us in their letter. I received this e-mail response on 10/6/03 from her after she received the above. We are sorry our previous reply was not acceptable and we realize that there may be times when that may occur. Again, we regret to learn of your unfortunate experience with your 2002 volvo v70. As we previously stated, there was extensive damage to your volvo and based on our available information for the inspection, we did not conclude a volvo product related condition as the cause of the situation you reported. While we regret you may not concur with our determination, unfortunately, we are not in a position to further consider this matter.sincerely, [xxx].*nlminformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

There is or was no failure or crash , but what it sounds like there might be one on the recall of my volvo v70 station wagon 2002 because of a possible malfunctioning software in the electronic throttle system . The recall notice came from volvo cars of north america, llc. I need some more information on this to see just how urgent and serious i should take priority to get my car in to see a volvo service center to get it fixed, because this could be just a way of getting a one half hour labor charge out of people if my car does not contain the recall problem.

The vehicle stalls or goes into "limp" mode often upon acceleration, but also apparently randomly. There is a recall for the same model of a different year described as "vehicles going into the limp home mode without need". I took it to a volvo mechanic and he found no problem, but he cleaned some parts and charged me. It still happens and is dangerous since the car could stall in traffic. It has happened over 100 times. I called volvo "support" and they said they could do nothing since there is no recall on that model. They offered no technical support which i thought was theleast they should do. I would like to get it fixed, but volvo is of no help. At least they should offer technical support even if there is no recall.

Volvo reluctantly released us from our lease a couple of months ago. Our first volvo experienced electrical and transmission problems. They put us in another volvo which experienced transmission problems as well. After repeated attempts on volvo of dallas' part to repair our car they finally replaced the transmission however the new transmission was not performing properly either when volvo released us from the lease. The dealership, area/regional directors, and volvo corporation practiced poor business etiquette on all accounts in our opinion. They did release us from our lease however, refused to reimburse us for our initial $5000.00 down payment. Our entire volvo experience disgusted us so that we chose not to endure the lengthly process of a law suit. We just wanted to drive a safe, dependable, reliable vehicle that fit our families needs. Too much to ask from volvo! it is a shame because when we got into our volvo we planned on being volvo customers "for life." good luck.

Vehicle lunges forward from second to third gear and "bangs" into gear from second to first gear. Took the vehicle to volvo dealership and had a software update. A mechanic test drove the vehicle afterwards and we were told the transmission needed to be replaced. Mileage was 132,00. Visited a local mechanic and he said he had serviced several volvo s60 and v70 models of the 2001~2002 model year and had found that several had experienced the same problem with only a transmission replacement to resolve the issue. I have checked many volvo forums and can not believe how many stories there are of these cars with the same problem. Volvo...this is a legitimate problem.

1st indication of transmission failures. Multiple issues since. No possible fix other than replacement @ approximately $4000.00 .

This car has been well cared since we got it at the day one. All schedule maintenance have been done at a volvo dealer. We have spend over $7000 on repairs and maintenance over the years. But its transmission started to slip since feb 2011 when there was only 100,000 miles on it. We took it to the dealer. They suggested a transmission fluid change. We followed their suggestion as we always did. But that did not resolved the problem. The transmission still does not work properly. We took it to the dealer again this oct, and the dealer said the transmission fluid was all black. Along with the problem we meet, they conclude the transmission is about to die, and the one fix is to replace with a new one which will cost $4500! we would expect the transmission of a well-care volvo would last longer than 100,000 miles. As i did some research on internet, i found many 99-02 volvo owners have the similar unfortunate issue. I would like nhtsa look into this issue, and initiate a recall on transmission of 2002 volvo v70.

Shifting became rough.then transmission would thud in and out of gear repeatedly while driving.at 40 mph the vehicle shifts up and down and can't decide what gear to be in.between 35pmh-40mph it thuds in and out of gears.

The contact owns a 2002 volvo v70. The contact stated that the transmission failed. The contact stated that he attempted to accelerate and the vehicle failed to move. The contact stated that he was on a hill and coasted to his house and parked his vehicle for a year. The vehicle was eventually taken to the dealer for inspection they stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 110,000.

Three times during the month of augustvehicle violently jumped forward into traffic. Dealer saidthere was a problem with a valve in the transmission. Windows squeak when rolled down. Steering wheel boot was not in place.

The contact owns a 2002 volvo v70. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph the vehicle down shifted and lost power. The contact had to apply pressure to the accelerator pedal so that the vehicle would increase in speed. After a few a minutes, the transmission warning light illuminated and there was a loss acceleration. The contact was able to continue driving to her destination . The dealer was not informed about the failure and stated the that there were no recalls and didn't acknowledge the failure . The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 83000 and the current mileage was 84100.

Transmission began slipping around 90,000 miles. Changing from 2nd to 3rd was a pressurized build up resulting in a lunge forward or bucking of vehicle. Several times trying to get across traffic lanes almost resulted in near crash due to transmission not changing gear. Putting car in gear resulted in a bucking forward or lunge. Volvo advised a new transmission but advised us of a computer download that might fix the problem. After the download the car drove great for about three weeks. Then it began again. When on a trip the jerking in changing was so violent the gas line was forced loose from the fuel filter causing a stall in traffic. Fortunately we were able to push the car out of traffic and waited for a mechanic to arrive to re-install the line to the filter. Volvo dealer was about three miles down the road but refused to come out stating too much going on and that they could help but would wait until the next day since so close to 5 pm. Independent mechanic came to help. A new trans was installed but with less than 5000 miles the problem seems to be coming back. Also the brake booster went out. A failed recalled part left us stranded when we first bought the car and we paid the towing fees to volvo.

The contact owns a 2002 volvo v70.while driving 35 mph, the vehicle sputtered and the check engine light illuminated.the vehicle did not lose power.the volvo dealer diagnosed the vehicle as needing the electronic throttle module replaced.the vehicle has not been repaired.the current and failure mileages were 78,000.

The contact owns a 2002 volvo v70. The contact stated that the vehicle would independently switch gears and remain stuck in third gear. The check engine warning light was also illuminated. The contact did not inform the dealer or manufacturer of the failure. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who advised the contact that the vehicle was not repairable and if he was to replace the transmission, the failure would recur. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was 130,000 and the failure mileage was 100,000.

The contact owns a 2002 volvo v70.the contact stated when the vehicle shifted into drive there was a delay before it would accelerate. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for a software upgrade but that did not remedy problem. A transmissionmechanic confirmed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The contact stated that this was a known failure and was concerned since the manufacturer was unable to rectify the failure. The failure mileage was 160,000.

The contact owns a 2002 volvo v70. The contact stated the vehicle started changing gears and began to jerk with force. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told the transmission failed. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 140,000. Updated 07/20/11*ljupdated 08/01/11

Improper shift of automatic transmission from reverse to drive and in certain slowing down condition which cause car to lurch (slow down as in making a right/left turn).dealer first stated that problem was with onboard software, now saying the car needs a new transmission.internet search concludes that this is not an isolated condition.

The contact owns a 2002 volvo v70. While driving approximately 10 mph, the transmission hesitated excessively and the warning indicator began toilluminate on the instrument panel. The warning indicator remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated the transmission would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 126,549. Updated 02/22/12*ljthe dealer replaced the transmission. Updated 03/12/12

During operation of the vehicle during cold weather, the driver noticed a hesitation when applying pressure to the accelerator pedal and heard a slight "crunching" sound.at a later date, consumer was driving approx. 35-45 mph on a road with hills (up and down).while driving up an incline, the driver experienced same hesitation and heard a horrible "punching" sound.the vehicle came to a complete stop while another vehicle rapidly approached from the rear. The other vehicle had to swerve suddenly to avoid hitting consumer's vehicle. The consumer & passenger had to roll vehicle down the hill and call for help. Dealer examined vehicle and determined that the left axle had pulled out of the transmission (due to a pin that had broke).the dealer performed a temporary fix by banging axle back into the transmission.also, dealer found that the left ball joint was broken (unknown when this occurred).dealer later replaced entire transmission. *mjj consumer would like to know if there are other reports regarding safety related issues on volvo v70.*la

Rear seat belt bucklesfailed. As a result, the child safety seat was not restrained properly.

Seat belt comes across consumer's neck when used, the consumer is trying to find a way to have the seatbelts adjusted so they are not directly across the neck, the dealer and manufacturer were notified.

Fyi: volvo has a silent recall/ replacement of seat bottoms when your seat heater has malfunctioned and burned a hole through your seat. A hole magically appeared in my seat bottom and fortunately didn't burn me. Volvo replaced the entire seat bottom unit with a new seat bottom for free at 188,000 miles!

2002 v70 volvo brake light relay.i am experiencing a safety issue where i step on my brakes and sometimes my side brake lights work and most times they do not.the hatch brake light always works.there was a 2004 recall for 2002 volvos but according to volvo my vin was not included in the recall.however, i am experiencing the exact same safety issue and had it confirmed by a mechanic.is there a way to get my vehicle repaired under this recall?thanks

The tie rod system on vehicle has been replaced four times due to wear.it has been replaced within the manufacturer's warranty period.upon inspection of the vehicle during a safety check by the dealer, it was determined that the tie rod needed to be replaced again, only 12,000 miles after the previous replacement.this time it is no longer in warranty.i have spoken to the manufacturer and dealer about this particular problem with the vehicle to see if it is a consistent problem and they will not provide the information to me.they reinspected my vehicle to "work" with me regarding replacement of the tie rod for a reduced rate and determined that it did not need to be replaced.i don't know if that is because i was fighting for them to replace it entirely since this would be the 5th replacement in 52,000 miles for a part that should last much longer.

Our vehicle was rear-ended by a 2012 vw tiguan (which was itself rear-ended by a 1997 dodge ram).the rear of our vehicle offered no protection to occupants in the third-row seat that volvo claims is designed to accommodate children.the vw made almost no contact with the frame of our car, and instead slid right into the rear passenger compartment almost 2 feet, crumpling the hatch that was the only barrier between the legs of a passenger (had there been one) and the front of the vw.the 3rd row seat of station wagons poses significant risk of permanent crippling injury to children in even a minor rear-end accident.

Problem - sidewall bubbling on tireswithin the first 5-1/2 months of owning my new volvo station wagon, i had to replace 2 pirelli tires due to sidewall bubbling.5 months later, with 12,000 miles on the car, one of those brand new tires has to be replaced again due to the same issue.my main complaint is that volvo recommended these tires to me despite the fact that i indicated that i live in redding, ct, primarily drive on back roads, and that my main reason for buying the car was safety.they told me i was better off with "high performance tires".i've contacted volvo and they refused to accept any responsibility or do anything to help.they told me that i must have hit a pothole so the damage was my fault but in 18 years of driving on the same roads that i've been driving my volvo on, i have never had to replace tires for any other reason than normal wear and tear.and since the problems with all 3 tires occurred at separate times, it seems apparent that these tires are not appropriate for the local driving conditions.luckily, this has not yet resulted in an accident, but due to the fact that i spend a lot of my driving time shuttling my small children around, i'm afraid to drive the car for fear that the tires will blow out. I'd appreciate any help you might be able to provide since i am very concerned about safety.

"takata recall" i was driving east bound on arlington blvd in virginia and proceeded to stop on a yellow light when a car driving over 55 mph hit my 2002 volvo from the rear and my vehicle spun out of control and hit another car front/side from the west bound intersection in the 3rd lane coming the opposite side and all cars was total.my seatbelt and airbag didn't save me from going forward or deploying.i was injured and still seeking medical attention after october 17, 2017 with 2 black eyes, broke teeth, whip lash, neck, knees and back injury.the car is still at beyers collision in alexandria virginia.

Would like to know why the above referenced vehicle, volvo brand, is not on your recall notification list.we have both models.thank you.

The door cannot be opened from the inside of the car.the mechanism to open the car door from the inside compartment is defective.the latch cable end is contained by a plastics housing.the cable end has another plastic part that snaps into the housing.there are clips on both sides of the plastic housing which hold down the cable end. When these clips break the cable end comes out of the housing.when the housing clips break, the inside door handle will not open the door.in the event of a crash and loss of power the occupant would not be able to exit the adjacent door.

Vehicle lounges, stops, no acceleration. Volvo refuses to replace failedetm/ecm equipment and software which was installed .

Over the past three years or so, i have hadfour or five incidences involving sudden acceleration of my 2002 volvo station wagon v-70.all have occurred in city driving not on the open highway.once when parking, i almost rammed another parked vehicle because, after applying the brake, my volvo suddenly lurched ahead.i swerved, pressed harder on the brake and put the car in neutral.i then stopped.on other occasions, mostly when coming to a stop at a traffic light, the car slows down and then surges ahead, after applying the brake.once again, to stop the car i had to slam down hard on the brake and put the car into neutral.on other occasions, after stopping at a traffic light or stop sign, the engine revs up to the point that i have to put it into neutral to stop the revving.i have brought the car into the martens volvo dealer and explained the problem each time i brought it in for servicing.they have adjusted the "throttle mechanism" each time but the problem still persists.

The first incident occurred when my wife and i were picking up my granddaughter at her homelocated on a steep hillside with a steep drive probably 8 plus degrees.i put the carin reverse and started to back down the drive.i had to back over the concrete drive edge as i had pulled off into the yard to make room for her parents vehicle. To get over the edge i had to press lightly on the accelerator.i have frequently backed down the drive usually in idle.the moment i pressed the accelerator the car immediately went into full throttle.i jammed the gear shift into park , pulled the emergency and pressed as hard as possible on the brake.nothing slowed or even seem to effect the backward acceleration.i hit a railroad tie that was one of many that defined the drive.the front tire literally exploded.i was able to steer down the drive onto the road around a greater than 90 degree turn backwards and up hill.the rim dug into the asphalt , the car stopped and engine shut off. We put on the spare and drove home.two days later, in the same place, i started to back onto the drive as before.i was very much aware of the situation and therefore was very careful to see that there was no overlap of foot on brake and accelerator.i also thought that if that terrible incident were to repeat itself i would turn off the key.when the back tire came in contact with the driveway lip i once again i had to press the accelerator to get on the driveway.same terrible response.this time in addition to jamminginto park, pulling the emergency, jamming on the brake, i also turned off the key.none of that evoked any response.this time i was unable to stay on the drive and went over a steep bank on the right side of the drive.the vehicle went through two trees at least 3" in diameter, a white picket fence and fence posts..it hit the bank at the side of the street and stopped without the release of airbags.my glasses and keys were foundin the back seat.
