The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle suddenly reduced speed drastically without warning. The contact was able to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road, turned off, and restarted the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for further inspection, diagnostic testing, and repair. The failure mileage was not available.
While driving the car, my wife would experience stalls with our children in the rear seats.when the check engine light came on, our dealer diagnosed the problem of a faulty electronic throttle module on our 1999 v70.
Vehicle quit running unexpectedly. (1) no warning.(2) engine quit in traffic.(3) cleaned idle air control valve.
Problems with my 1999 volvo v70incident 5/10/051. Events leading up to the failure. My car experienced a falter then rough idle and drastically reduced power. In addition the check engine light went on.2. The car seemed to recover and i was able to make it home. 3.i took my car into my repair shop and had the problem diagnosed. I was told the fault codes registered in the cars computer indicated there was a failing evaporator purge valve along with bad electronic throttle module (etm). The repair cost me $1,070.00.incident 5/24/051.after a little over 3 months my car has experienced the same symptoms. Falter then rough idle and drastically reduced power. In addition the check engine light went on.2.i plan to have the car analyzed by the same repair shop that did the previous $1,070.00 worth of work. 3.resolution pending investigationbased on the research i have done this issue seems similar to action number: pe05041 that is currently being investigated by nhtsa.nhtsa action number : pe05041 nhtsa recall campaign number : n/a make : volvo model: v70 manufacturer : volvo cars of n.a. Llc. Year : 2001 component : vehicle speed control date investigation opened : july 26, 2005 date investigation closed : open summary: the office of defects investigation (odi) has received one hundred and thirty-one (131) consumer complaints alleging a variety of concerns resulting from failure of the electronic throttle control module (etm) in the subject vehicles, including a sudden loss of speed and steering assist when driving in highway traffic and sudden and complete stall without warning. In some instances, it has been reported that the vehicles would restart, and in some cases the vehicles were towed. Some consumers allege that after having the etm replaced the new component failed in a similar manner.
I was driving south on i-85 in duluth, ga. This stretch of metro atlanta interstate has six lanes in either direction and traffic was flowing at speeds of around 75 mph. The ets light came on when we were in the far left (fast) lane, the car began losing power. I moved to the right as best i could and got off at the next exit. By the time i got to the exit ramp, the car was skipping and missing badly. My daughter looked up ets in the owner's manual and, based on what the manual said, i cut the car off and waited a few minutes for it to reset. I cranked it back up and we limped the rest of the way home.since then i have only started it once, but it was running rough so i did not go anywhere. Considering what we have learned about etm failures since this happened and the amount of traffic in atlanta, i have been scared to drive it. Having to cross five lanes of fast-moving traffic in a car rapidly losing power is not a safe situation.
Ets light on, dealer replaced etm customer pay.receipts faxed to odi, this voq created from e-mail sent by current owner mr. Scott.the consumer stated the part failed and was replaced before he purchased the vehicle, but he is sure it will have to replaced again.
1999 volvo v-70 lost all power went into limp home mode approx 25 mph w/o warning . This occurred on an interstate with heavy traffic. Emt cleaned problem still occurring making for a very unsafe and dangerous and conditions.

My volvo v70 has stalled dead repeatedly while driving at both high and low speeds, most recently while just coming onto a long freeway exit ramp with no shoulder. There were cars behind me and i almost got hit from behind. Prior stalls (about 5 of them) include total stalling while braking, and while speeding up. I have had the fuel pump, relay, and manifold replaced. And after all that, spending over $1000, it stalled this last time. Sometimes the car can start up again after a stall and a 10 minute wait, but it will suddenly stall again.
My volvo v70 will suddenly de-accelerate. I understand this may be due to a faulty electronic throttle system. I have had to pay for replacements parts that are also faulty. This has occurred twice since i purchased the car in 1999.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving, at various speeds, the electronic throttle control module light illuminated followed by the vehicle operating at a reduced speed.the vehicle was seen by an authorized dealership for inspection and replaced the computer, but the problem returned.the vehicle was taken back to the dealer.the service department replaced the battery.afterwards, the problem persisted and the vehicle was again seen by the dealer.the dealer determined the vehicle needed a new computer and the vehicle is currently at the dealer awaiting this replacement.the consumer stated he is still experiencing stalling problems. The manufacturer will not authorize the replacement of the ets.the dealer stated no codes were showing up.updated 08/25/06.
Dt: the vehicle stalled. The dealer replaced throttle body 3 times.
The electronic throttle module in my volvo v70 fails without warning.often at highway speeds, this results in a sudden loss of speed (almost as if the brakes were suddenly applied).though volvo's owners manual indicates this can happen, and recommends restarting the car (under the section on the ets light), i am convinced the repeated failures constitute a safety hazard.were it to occur when changing lanes or merging, i fear the situation could be quite bad.although volvo recommends replacing the etm for $1000+, i am reluctant to do so, not least because others with the same problem have spent the money to replace the module, and then ended up with the same problem again.recently, the incidents are occurring as often as once very 15 to 30 minutes.
Incidence 3 of 7 similar.as reported on service invoice:"[throttle & cruise] customer reports: ets light comes on intermittently - light goes out on restart. Access diagnostic codes: ecm 91a7. 1999 volvo v70 awd - electronic throttle system failed at ~96,000 miles.required $1500 in repairs because the car was just outside of the extended warranty period.currently negotiating with volvo about at least partial compensation, as ets failures have been a longstanding problem with this model. No resolution yet.
Througout this cars history (from the first year 20 + years ago through to today) the engine randomly cuts out without warning, though thishappens when usally while declerating and braking to round a street corner.once it cuts out, of course power steering and brakes are virtually inoperative.however, by simply putting in neutral and turning the key the care always immediately restarts.

I am afraid to drive this carfor fear of something else going wrong with the electrical system.i have four small grandchildren who are with me at least three days a week.
I own a 1999 volvo v70 awd wagon with 55,000 miles. We were traveling on the highway at about 70 mph and the car started to surge. The ets light came on.we were able to drive home, but the car was running roughly.i contacted the dealer and made an appointment to bring it in.i was told that the electronic throttle body module needed to be replaced.they also suggested a complete vehicle software upgrade.i have an extended warranty (sold to me by the dealer), but it did not cover this repair.

Car surges randomly at lower speeds. Car also loses power on freeway and acceleration fluctuates uncontrollably at times. All symptoms happening while car is in motion, mostly at speeds over 50mph. I brought the car to my local dealership where there were open recalls on the model i own. After recall was performed, the symptoms have increased and worsened. Dealership is refusing to take any responsibility.
1999 volvo v70 experiencing problems with the electronic throttle system.***no answer required*** *mr the ets light (electronic throttle system) would come on and the vehicle would start to buck.several mechanics, dealer and friends of the consumers stated that this was a common problem. *sc
During normal driving conditions the 1999 volvo v70 glt will stall, or die out.other instances that occur along with or alone, are the gauges all being cut off.my wife says they look like they were unplugged.we have been really punished for purchasing this vehicle.volvo has replaced numerous parts and other mechanics have as well (became to costly @dealership-think they are very disreputable).this car has been driven primarily in the city of nashville and kept very clean and serviced regularly.with 117,000 miles on it, the dealership has replaced one throttle body @85000 and it now needs another.these aren't related i don't think but i can explain much better over the phone.
The electronic throttle module in my 1999 volvo v70 as begun to fail without warning.often the problem will fix itself upon restarting.however, when the module fails (and the ets light comes on in the dash), an extremely sudden loss of power is experienced---enough that it could easily lead to a loss of control.the problem has occurred at least 15 times in the past 2 days, and is a serious safety hazard.volvo, in the owners manual for the car, indicates that this failure may sometimes occur (in the section describing the ets light) and suggest trying to restart the car.while restarting the car does often work, i find this to be an unacceptable and very serious safety hazard.volvo's solution for me is to replace the throttle module at $1000 or more.many have experienced this same problem, though, and the defect seems to be clearly systemic.what's more, there is no evidence that volvo's replacements won't exhibit precisely the same problem.
I've had numerous electronic problems with my volvo v70 since i bought it in 1998.the vehicle has been brought back to the volvo repair dealer for many repairs (i have organized documents of all the repair orders) clearly identified as "lost of power" while driving.mostly on small roads and only once on an interstate.originally started under warranty, i was told that the same problem was not covered outside of warranty when i spoke with the president of volvo north america's secretary.i have had many parts replaced tryingto correct the situation including two electronic throttle control units (totaling three if you include the one that came with the car)."loss of power", "stalling at traffic lights", "hesitation when pressing on accelerator", an other comments are all documented in the volvo repair shop repair orders.the problems continued until throughout my ownership of the car.i finally gave up and sold it june 05.the repairs that volvo did to my v70 would work for a while and then the lights would soon come back on.i'd put up with it for a while until the car started to become to dangerous to drive (hesitation) and then i'd bring it in for repair.volvo tried different solutions and told me that the computer codes indicated different repairs, but to me it was always the same symptoms.i would be glad to share the entire book of repair orders over the 7 years (and 167,000 miles) that i owned the car.again they were always done at a certified volvo dealership.
No events leading to failure.electronic throttle control module failed whiled driving on freeway. Forced to make emergency stop and have vehicle towed to repair facility to have the module replaced.
Stalling at low speeds. The etm has been replaced twice, xref 10137600.the mass air flow unit was replaced, the bulbs burned out, the blower motor fan would run constantly, the check engine and abs light would illuminate. The consumer sold the vehicle in may 2005. Updated 01/09/06.
After charging the battery, the car would not start.the incident has happened at least 3 times and the dealer stated there was no fix to the problem.
The indicator light on the gear selector has burnt out.there's a 'signal-orange' colored indicator mark that tracks the gear selector against the slate grey color shift assembly put there as a safety feature so you know what gear you're in and don't accidentally take off in an unintended direction, forward or reverse, or roll into someone while unintentionally finding yourself in neutral.well now at night unless you turn on the interior light, you can just guess what gear you're in because when it's dark in the cab you can't see at all what's what as far a gear selection.i find this remarkable.at age 49, with all the cars we've owned and all i've had until over 100,000 miles, never do i recall any dashboard type indicator lamps burning out, i thought they just made them that way because they're not replaceable or something.i assumed they were like neon or light emitting diodes that can never burn out and would function forever or until something physically broke them.here's a tip for you folks at the nhtsa and your families:avoid volvo's in parking lots at night, turns out we have only an idea of the gear we're in before the car starts moving, in the dark the lack of certainty provided by a manufacturing failure could prove dangerous.volvo for life?
Console and console knobs very hot to the touch - tapes have melted in tape deck - electrical switches malfunction repeatedly but in no apparent pattern - turn signals and headlights burn out on a regular basis - windows have not operated - electrical seat adjustment has failed - air conditioner swithces have failed.
Please include my vehicle incident to nhtsa action # pe05041. While driving on the highway the vehicle ets (electronic throttle system) warning light came on. Vehicle was able to drive home.next day vehicle would not start, however, was able to start by bypassing gear selector into neutral and vehicle started and was taken to volvo dealer.volvo replaced the ets unit and reloaded the software under the special ca emissions warranty.since volvo replaced the part with an identical unit, i am concerned the unit will fail again out of warranty and i will have to replace at my cost ($1,000.00).volvo should redesign and replace ets units to volvo owners at no cost.
1.vehicle "sputtered", engine would rev with no change in pressure on gas pedal, followed by nearly complete loss of power and near engine cut off.2.no complete failure, as soon as symptoms began, it was taken to a dealer3.volvo dealer and repair shop determined the failure was ecm code 903c, 91a7: "throttle internal fault".replaced electronic throttle module.old part is not available.15 mar 2005 - 1.same symptoms; car was unable to maintain highway speed of 60 mph.2.engine stalled once before going to dealer repair but started back up without problem.3.exact failure codes not provided, but was determined to be "engine control module fault".electronic throttle module was replaced.covered by volvo parts warranty.old part is not available.
1. Events leading to failure....about 3 week prior, experienced hesitation (almost stalling) when slowing from highway speeds to lower and stopping speeds. 2. Failure.... Finally, it happened. (i had just read an article about this in the paper!) it stalling when slowing down and wouldn't restart until some 2 hours later. Luckily it was daytime and in a good neighborhood.3. What was done... Took it into volvo dealer with the symptoms and they replaced the etm. Lots of $$$!
1999 volvo v70 developed a problem with the throttle body sensor resulting in the vehicle stalling.*mrthe consumer experienced numerous problems with the vehicle;replacement of defective gear shifterlight socket and the driver side window switch, battery leads malfunction causing the battery to fail, the rear window washer pump burned out, and the driver door check strap had broken off.*sc
Ignition cap cross threaded.
1999 volvo v70 engine starts and then stops suddenly.sometimes will have to restart engine 3 or 4 times before it continues to run.dealer has been unable to find and/or repair this problem.
Our 1999 volvo v70 simply stopped without warning.portland, me dealer "reprogrammed the computer" and "checked."we drove 1500 miles and again it stopped...this time repeatedly.indianapolis dealer kept the car for 3 weeks and reported that they inadvertantly solved whatever the problem was ($435).in the subsequent month &4500 miles later, all appears to be well.
There was an electrical problem within the turn signal socket which causedthe wires to melt, causing the turn signal to be inoperative. Consumer has contacted the dealer. Dealer stated the turn signal socket needed replacing.also, this was a common problem with this vehicle.
On the highway i was signalled by another driver that i had no brake lights.i pulled over to confirm and found that indeed i did not have working brake lights. When i got home i found that i had blown a fuse for the brake light circuit.i replaced the fuse and have not had a problem since.i reported the problem to the dealer at my following service appointment.the service rep confirmed that all 3 lights (2 main & the high mounted 3rd light were on the same fuse. I feel this is a safety issue as 1 fuse going out with seemingly no cause leaves the vehicle and driver vulnerable to a rear end accident.
Consumer has noticed the dashboard has become very hot at times with tempertures of 191 degrees, causing serval components to melt, such as tapes, etc. Consumer contacted the dealer, dealer unable to determine the cause. Please provide any further details.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70. The contact stated that the check engine and esc warning lights were illuminated. The engine then exhibited an abnormal increase in rpms accompanied by a loud noise. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number:06v441000 (vehicle speed control) but was informed by the manufacturer that the repairs had been performed by the previous owner. The vehicle was not further repaired. The current and failure mileage was 204,529.

The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the rpms decreased and the vehicle stalled. The contact mentioned that the check engine, ecm and the limp home mode warning messages illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle had surpassed the statute of limitations for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 156,000 and the current mileage was 158,000.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70. While driving 30 mph, the engine stalled and the check engine and transmission range warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the electronic throttle control needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 171,550.
Dt: vehicle stalled/died, and lost power due to throttle body failure.
Traveling in town at appr. 45 mph. Car went into limp mode, etm check light came on.
I purchased this car, a 1999 volvo v-70 station wagon, in 2002.the car intermittently and repeatedly stalls in traffic in addition to randomly accelerating and decelerating on its own so that driving is hazardous.car has been serviced numerous times for these problems and most of the work has been on electronic throttle system.problems may appear to be fixed for a short time but not really fixed because stalling and unexpected acceleration/deceleration begin again.car has problem unique to it in that it fails to produce computer codes regarding stalling or etm failure, and because car fails intermittently, except for one mechanic, all others who have serviced the car have failed to experience the stalling and random acceleration/deceleration first hand.what to do with a car that reliably fails intermittently, fails to fail when the mechanic needs it to fail to be able to fix it and produces no computer codes as to why it is failing? on 7 april, 2006, i took car to volvo of richardson, richardson tx to service the problem of the car stalling repeatedly in the previous few days. They upgraded the etm software but the car continued to stall and stutter in traffic.in fact, it seemed the stuttering and shuttering (near stalls) were worse.i had the car towed back to dealer and asked about the repairs under the extended warranty as pernhtsa action: ea05021.service director for dealerrefused to replace etm under extended warranty saying they would not be reimbursed if they couldn't reproduce the stalling etc.likewise,at volvo customer care (1-800- 458-1552), "bart" refused to authorize repairs covered under extended warranty of ea05021.the number of failures/incidents of car stalling and unexpectedly accelerating and decelerating are too numerous to count anymore. The car reliably stalls intermittently and repeatedly.last incident of stalling was 14 april 2006 when the car stalled four times in traffic.
Back in june of 2008 - on start up my 99 volvo v70 - would rough idle, rev to 4000 and would not exceed 20 mph.the idle sounded like sneakers in a dryer.i took the car to my garage and was quoted $2000.00 to replace the etm - i was told by my garage that the etm may still be under warranty.after speaking with volvo usa - i was advised that this part was under warranty and i should bring to the nearest volvo dealership. I did.boston volvo village -did a software update and after that reported no issues with the etm -they claimed cracked vacuum hoses were the problems.they replaced the hoses and return the car.the car broke down a day later - rev to 4000, rough idle, won't go over 20 mph - sneakers in washing machine sound.i brought the car back to boston volvo village - this time they told me that i had an bad accelerator pedal - which was replace cost was $225.00.the car broke down a third time - this time on a busy highway - i was able to pull off - but if not for some excellent driving by others on the road there would had been a 3 car pile up. Boston volvo village towed the car back to their garage.one of their employees admitted to me that the emt was the problem - but that volvo makes it impossible to replace the etm.
Incidence 1 of 7 similar.as reported on service invoice:c/s car stalls out while driving, making a u-turn, start right up. Check car for codes, access, no codes on any system. No codes on fuel system, check fuel pump connector under rear panel, all ok.per above, though service dept couldn't find anything wrong, this incident was the 1st of 7 similar problems occurring later that ultimately lead to having the throttle body cleaned twice & then replaced twice. I will be reporting all the other subsequent incidents in sequence of occurrence on this nhtsa complaint site as well.
Dt:caller stated that three times vehicle hadied while dr. It has happened each time about 5 weeks apart. Got it started again while its was rolling. Dealer and manufacturer have not been contacted yet.
The problem is a grinding/vibration when the car gets hot. The dealer/volvo say it is the viscouis coupling. Neither one know how to fix. The dealership said they have at least two brand new cars that they know about on their lot that have the same problem (wonder what they will do with these cars?).i think this is a very big problem. Please help......
My husband and i were burned by scolding hot steam and water that exploded out of our a/c heating vents on our dashboard. We were waiting in a drive thru with the car on, but the a/c heating unit was off. The make , model and year of our car is a 1999 volvo v70. It was towed to our mechanic who said the heater core went bad and the hoses ruptured. He bypassed the heater unit to save money on repairs. When my husband was driving the vehicle home it ran hot, he promptly took it back to the repair shop. The radiator fan was inoperative the main cabin floor was flooded with coolant and foul smelling. We no longer had faith in the car and sold the car to the mechanic. We're just happy we weren't driving the vehicle on the road when that happened.
When the brake pedal was depressed, the brakes didn't engage and the vehicle failed to stop,as a result the driver had to continuously pump the pedal to stopvehicle.consumer stated there was complete and total brake failure. The consumer had the abs unit that was replaced.the check enginelight illuminated.the dealer reset the light.*ph *nlm
Engine stutter / stall / engine speed reduced and not drivable - multiple occurrences before and after repairs over period of 5 years. Dealer repair 9/27/00 13941 miles replaced throttle body. Second instance records not readily available - believe replaced manifold. Third instance 9/16/03 36061 miles - replaced multiple components until problem went away. Fourth instance july 2005 approx 75000 miles tracs, abs, check engine light with erratic vehicle speed - had to keep throttle high rpm but diagnosis was wheel speed sensor repaired and problem went away - but starting to show same stutter on start up that predated first failure - has not failed yet, but wife refuses to drive as unsafe due to multiple failures and loss of power / speed in traffic. I believe this car is an example of the investigation in work - ref pe05041.
Malfunctioning of the electronic throttle system (ets) on my 1999 volvo v70 station wagon caused me to lose power or stall completely while driving. It happened several times prior to having the ets replaced. It occurred for me at low speeds and in light traffic allowing me to get off the road. I was able to restart the engine after a short time interval. It could have been a major safety hazard if i had this failure at highway speeds and in traffic. This occurred several months ago and has been repaired at my expense, but on reading an associated press article today on an investigation of this problem by the nhtsa, i am submitting this as another instance of the problem being investigated. The air conditioning compressor and power windows had to be replaced.currently, the check engine light is on.
We have a 1999 v70 volvo station wagon that about 1 year ago began losing power and/or stalling without warning while i was driving on the highway. It would re-start if i was able to gun it and get the car moving. Volvo replaced the throttle system and the issue seemed to be resolved. In may 2005, the engine again began to lose power as i decelerated while driving on the highway (e.g. When approaching a toll or in traffic) and then would completely stall once i exited the highway onto the local roads and was driving at a slower speed.it appeared to happen more frequently when i had a full tank of gas and/or the air conditioner was on. It would re-start fairly easily. The volvo dealer where we purchased the car (summit, nj) looked at the car in may and could find nothing wrong, as the computer did not register any failure; they returned the car to us as is. It continued to happen periodically and eventually would not re-start. On monday, june 13 i had it towed to a local repair shop in jersey city who could find nothing wrong; they returned the car to us as is. On friday, june 17, we then brought it to another volvo dealer (montclair, nj) where three mechanics looked at it over the course of one week and could find nothing wrong, again citing that the computer did not register any failures. It has happened a few more times, so now it is at another local repair shop (garwood, nj) where the mechanic can find nothing wrong. I have not driven the car since mid-june as i have two small children and do not feel safe driving a car that can stall without warning in highway traffic and be slammed from behind.
My name is [xxx] and i currently own a 1999 volvo v70. On august 1, i heard on the news that nhtsa was investigating a potential engine problem with volvos. This was the same day i was taking my car to a local volvo dealer for its 150,000 miles service and one of the problems i was planning to report was that the car stalls occasionally when i am driving or just looses speed. I have reported this problem in the past two years to at least three volvo dealers in the new york/new jersey metropolitan area and i have been told in all occasions that the problem could not be replicated when conducting the service.the stalling problem began in 2003 and has happened 12 times to date. In one occasion i was driving at 50 miles an hour in a highway when this happen. My wife and my child were in the car then. We were all unharmed.when i took my car to the volvo dealer on august 1, i got a call for the service personand i was told that the throttle of the car had an internal fault and needed to be replaced for almost $1,000. I was also told that this was the reason why my car was stalling or loosing speed. However, knowing that the car model is currently under investigation for a similar problem, i decided not to fix it until the outcome of the investigation is known. In my opinion, this problem exists with the volvo models -- including mine -and encourage the nhtsa to pursue the investigation .thank you. Upper torque mount on engine mounting cracked.this rather unusual failure suggested to me a possible manufacturing defect with safety implications.in addition, steering fluid reservoir also found to be cracked.again, an very unusual failure which might relate to a manuf defect.invoice no. I am writing because my car has lost power without warning.i have experienced this several times, fortunately none in life threatening situations like pulling onto a busy road or freeway.the dealer reloaded the software, but the ets light came back on within a few days.i took it back to the dealer, they kept it a week, test drove it for some time and said there was nothing else they could do.i asked the volvo service manager, greg, at turner volvo in sacramento whether volvo knows what the root cause of the problem and whether this software fixes it.he said that it fixes the problem in 95% of the cases.he refused to answer whether the specific problem that causes the loss of power has been addressed by the software they recently loaded and whether it is corrected in my particular vehicle.since i have driven this car over 180,000 miles with only recent problems, this is indeed a rare occurrence.my concern is that neither greg at turner volvo (916)488-2400. Or frank at volvo customer care 800-458-1552 x 1981,seems to be willing to state that the defect that causes the power loss problem has been eliminated from my car.i asked frank whether volvo was willing to put in writing that the root cause of the problem has been identified and eliminated from my vehicle, and frank said he did not know whether volvo is willing to do that.i have opened a formal complaint with volvo and am awaiting their response.
The tensioner bearings in my 1999 volvo v70 seized, thus causing the timing belt to fail, causing the cylinders to hit and bend the valves.the recommended service interval for this equipment is 105,000 miles or 72 months; the vehicle has 76,200 miles and is about 72 months old.it's unclear to me whether this type of failure at highway speed would cause the car to suddenly fail, which might cause a crash.i have not yet had this repaired, but will save all parts if nhtsa is interested.
The vehicle experienced mass air flow sensor failure.

I am afraid to drive this carfor fear of something else going wrong with the electrical system.i have four small grandchildren who are with me at least three days a week.
This car has had a sulfur smell in the emissions since the day of purchase.when it didn't go away at 200 miles, complained to the dealer.they said it would take 2000 miles.didn't go away by them.they have replaced the o2 sensor, downloaded and upgraded computer, replaced the mass air flow sensor and we are on our third cat converter but the car still smells of sulfur.especially noxious at low speeds, stop and go traffic and idleing!in june of 2000 they said they weren't authorizing any more repairs on the car.but the car still smells.concerned about the smell being an irritant to my son who has history of asthma.

This is a saftety related issue.... Headlight failure.
Saw info on investigation...have had three front lamp failures....seems unusual for newer car...several friendsw/ volvos (98-99) have had same problem
Headlight switchmalfunctioned. Daytime running lights were not working in thesecond position.in the third positionheadlights and interior lights were suppose to come on. However, the headlights came on, butdashboard lights did not come on. If the switch was between position 2 and 3interior lights came on. This was not the normal position for the lights to operate.
The headlight switch does not work.the switch came apart and the headlights do not come on at all.please provide details.
As you can see, i have repeatedly had headlights and turn signal lights burn out on a brand new car.the personnel at the dealership have repeatedly advised me that volvo knows there is a problem with the v70's because the socket and the lightbulbs are not compatible.i have written to volvo asking for replacement of all of the exterior lights and never recieved any response.the dealership agreed to do that under its goodwill warranty.this was done on 4/19/2000.it has not resolved the problem as another signal light has just gone out.it seems to me that volvo, whichis perfectly aware of the problem, should recall these cars so the their owners don't have to return to the dealership every month to replace a lightbulb.

Car has approx. 15,300 miles. When activating the turn signal (left) the interior indicator flashed rapidly.the front exterior turnsignalbulb would flash dimly.the dealer determined that a contact on the interior of the light socket was charred and replaced the bulb and socket.this problem has also occurred on my 1998 volvo v70 wagon.

I have a 99 volvo v70 t5, on july 3rd of 2006 we had the vehicle in as the etm light was on, the dealer upgraded the software of the etm at no cost, now a year later the vehicle is undrivable.it surges at low idle causing the vehicle to jump forward, it consistently stalls out and now is beginning to surge while driving down the road at any rpm. I feel that this is a extreme hazard and i am no longer able to drive the vehicle.
Loss of power on highway car slowed to 20 mph on highway, replaced etm module also happened in jan 2005 had etm cleaned as per service bulletin.
Traveling in town at appr. 45 mph. Car went into limp mode, etm check light came on.
Engine idling improperly, read about electronic throttle failuresthrottle failed, replacement required.
Recurring problem (3 times at least now) with leaking fuel tank, strong smell and noticeable leaks on the r.h.s. Fuel tank (rear side) underneath. A few loose clamps on the hoses on the top of the tank found and fixed. Problem disappeared, but comes back with every re-fueling. Dealer suggested repairing it at theirs' at my expense as a general case, no recalls exist.
Etm failure in my 1999 volvo v70 t5. Local volvo dealer has serviced (cleaned) it and it is still malfunctioning. Car runs rough and is becoming a hazard in traffic. Will replace soon at a cost of $750 us for the part--unknown labor costs.
On aug. 13, 2005, my wife was driving on a public road in san francisco approx. 35 mph when her 1999 volvo v70 (approx. 72,500 miles on the odometer) stalled. I called putnam volvo in burlingame the following tuesday, and made a service appointment for thursday, aug. 18. That thursday morning, when i started the car, it began to idle roughly, surging from approx. 800 rpm to 1500 rpm repeatedly. I shut the car down, then restarted it; the car then ran fairly normally.putnam volvo diagnosed the problem as a faulty throttle control module, and charged me $1225.00 for the repair. It seems that many of these throttle control modules are failing prematurely.
Etm defect, car stall on highway, replace on dealer on my cost and broken again 3 months later, same situation like everybody with this defective parts .volvo representative said there no problem with these parts !!!so i have to pay for the replacement all the life of the car !! each 6 months ??? 1200.00 $$$
The vehicle was delivered new with a fuel problem--a leak somewhere in the fuel pump assembly.since then, it has 3 times developed gas leaks, one time serious enough that gas was pouring the gas tank area (apparently a ruptured seal).
1999 volvo v70 etm (electronic throttle module) failure-my wife and 3 year old daughter were driving the car on a major four lane avenue, in heavy traffic, when the etm failed. The car started idling rough. When she came to a stop light, she had to press the brake extremely hard to prevent the car from lunging into the vehicle in front of her.when she accelerated to proceed, the car would only go a maximum of 30 mph, even with the accelerator pressed to the floor.luckily, the crown volvo dealership (greensboro, nc) was on the same stretch of avenue. She managed to get to the dealership and get it repaired.we were devastated when they told us the repair would cost $934.00. We were able to get that reduced to $836.24, because we just happen to have a $100 discount coupon in the glove compartment. We had just had a 60,000 mile service performed on the car a couple months ago. The actual mileage when the etm failed was 64,284.the repair included replacing the faulty etm, a gasket, and a etm program reload.
My 1999 volvo v70's engine unexpectedly stopped running while i was driving on i -95 in heavy traffic.i was fortunate to be able to pull off the highway, as this was a very dangerous situation.the ets warning light was on and the engine would not restart.no"limp home" mode was available.the car was towed to an independent shop.they got the car running but cruise c. Still inop.incident occurred 4-12-05.
Car stalls at any time.
Sirs - i file this compliant to add to those already filed by others that document malfunctioning electronic throttle modules in 1999 to 2001 volvo 60/70/80-series vehicles.my 1999 v70 t5 currently exhibits the conditions indicative of etm malfunction (e.g., rough starting, uneven acceleration, and intermittent surging when driving at steady state highway speeds).the ets dash panel light is illuminated.only once has the car completely stalled (and it occurred in the volvo of irvine, ca parking lot as i was departing).the car just turned 90k miles.it has not left me stranded on a highway but i'm very concerned that it will stall and go into "20-mph limp home" mode and make me a target.
Due to design (absence of a shield over fuel line), damage to the fuel line from rock in the road surface occurred, which sprayed small amounts of gasoline into the engine compartment and resulted in fire. Mjs
Theirs is a very bad fuel leak coming from the fuel tank area, it leaks up to five gallons within an hour. Dealer has been contacted.
Structure coupling housing cross member would become unbolted.fuel tank is indirectly attached cloosely by strap to the frame member. This would have causedtank to fall off.
I had my trottle unit, pcv system replaced twice on my 1999 volvo v70, once under warranty and again 35000 miles later at my expense ($1041.91). I have subsequently learned that this is a pervasive problem with these model volvo cars from years 1999 through 2001. An article in the las angelos times dated may 3, 2005 states that between 21 and 94% of these units fail within the first 100,000 miles. Volvo na refuces to recall these units apparently, according to the article, replacing some units under a silent extended warranty program. I am requesting your organization to investigate this matter and, if found that the majority of these units fail within the time period specified, you mandate that volvo na recall these units. As such, those of us who have already paid to have them replaced can receive a full refund for the repair.
Regular maintenance was performed on the vehicle (1999 volvo v70). Aty 67000 miles, the ets light came on, and two days later the electronic throttle failed, resulting in almost no acceleration, and an inability to maintain a safe speed. Research indicates that this is well documented as a vehicle design flaw, and a common occurance at 70k miles.this seems to be a highly hazardous flaw, and should be acknowledged and repaired as a manufacturing defect. Instead, it is a dealer only repair, and is costing consumers $700-1500 for the repair. I believe it should be investigated. Volvo should be responsible to repair a noted design flaw at their expense.
As i was driving home the car started running very rough and was not able to get it above 25 mph.it also started to lunge forward sporadically and it seemed like it was going to stall at any moment.i contacted volvo directly and they called it "limp home mode" and that's exactly what it was, horrable!!.i consider myself lucky that my children were not with me.apparently volvo recognizes the problem but are no longer fixing this ongoing problem.volvo estimated that the fix would be on the low end $900.00 up to about $1400.00.volvo is not taking anymore responsibility and now it's up to the consumer to absorb the cost.

There is only one door that owner can unlock with the key.otherwise, the consumer must rely on the remote. The battery on our remote failed and the lock had been non-functioning for quite some time, since there is only one lock on the doors. A child was locked inside the car. We had to call a locksmith.to replace the remote (they fail frequently) it costs approximately $300 for the device.this is absolutely abusive.
Driver's door would lock up when opening or closing door. Dealer contacted. The main door hinge is failing and hangs up when opening or closing the driver front door.the auto service dealer has advised that this seems to be a manufacturing defect.there are complaints of other vehicles with the same problem but volvo will not offer to replace it despite safety concerns.*jg
Dt: the contact stated while driving the vehicle stalled intermittently. The vehicle has been to the dealership numerous times to have the electronic throttle modulereplaced. The contact was afraid to drive the vehicle. The problem recurredafter repairs made. The vehicle surges and stutters violentlythe manufacturer has been contacted.the door latch was broken.a loose ball joint was replaced.the drivers window would not go up. Updated 01/25/06.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70.the contact has experienced failures with the vehicle's tailgate that have become progressively worse.the tailgate door will not open at all.the vehicle is currently at the dealer and has been for seven days.the dealer stated that they are having a hard time replacing the entire locking mechanism.nhtsa safety recall # 00v239000 (latches/locks/linkages:tailgate:latch) is for the same failure.the current mileage is 109,605 and failure mileage was 102,849.

While driving 1999 volvo v70, the car rolled to a stop.vehicle had to be towed.front drive axle was rusted out, broken, and had to be replaced.old part not available. Repair bill available; repair technician available for contact.
A drivetrain vibration common to the volvo xc awd wore through the heat shield and was wearing through the plastic gas tank.while investigating the vibration, they found theviscous coupling housing had worn through the shield and tankand replaced the tank.

To whom it may concern:we bought our new volvo v70 glt wagon in 1999 from kramer motor, santa monica, california.just recently the airbag safety light (srs) went off and i was told by the authorized volvo service dealer (rusnak, pasadena) that it meant something was wrong in the airbag system andvolvo would replace the airbag.on the day of the repair the dealer called and told me there was something wrong with my seat covers - the covers were not authorized volvo seat covers (driver and passenger) and therefore the volvo airbag feature might not work.since we bought this car new from a volvo dealer, we did not understand how this situation could happen. Volvo informed us that dealers will sometimes change factory parts, if they want to, and that volvo can not do anything about it and does not accept any responsibility for what their dealers do.since this dealer changed a feature that has serious safety issues, again we could not believe this situation is correct.how is a consumer protected in such a matter?we bought from an authorized dealer and how are were we supposed to know or even suspect that critical safety elements might not be functioning?volvo america and their local representative, michael lafata, seem to feel that it is just a case of let the buyer beware.the volvo america customer service supervisor, kathleen natale, was more understanding and tried to help but she had to defer to mr. Lafata's decision that volvo would not replace these seat covers to return the airbag safety feature to an operating condition. Rather, rusnak volvo put my car back together with the non-volvo seat covers and sent me on my way with a stack of paperwork that clearly says that my car may not be safe because the airbag feature may not work with the current seat covers. As you can see below, no one has been injured or died yet, but clearly this is a safety problem that we believe volvo america should quickly address.
The braking sometimes becomes diminished.the pedal is 'stiff' and normal baking is reduced.it occurs so rarely that there is no way for me to expect that it will present for a mechanic on a test drive.occurrences are many days or even weeks apart.the symptom involves a distinct variation on the normal braking experience:a slight throbbing occurs and diminished stopping power is available, i have to press markedly harder to get the car to stop.scary.this symptom is so intermittent and fleeting, it seems it would be near impossible to demonstrate and track down.but every time i experience it, the very slight pulsing during braking and accompanying additional pedal pressure required to achieve a normal stop, i worry.i've even pulled into a parking lot and tried in an abandon section to test itand to get it to reoccur for me, but never can.so i worry.to be clear, the situation for which i'm concerned here is when, on rare occasions, while routine braking, i experience the need to apply more pressure than is otherwise typical and usual.it scares me a bit, but as it turns out, in all the instances so far, it's occurred on city streets w/ relatively low speeds involved and light traffic situations; (e.g.:i'm first to an intersection w/ no one in front of me, etc.) but for future situations that might require a critical braking, i remain naturally, concerned.the danger is displaced in the immediate term where the remedy has been, simply, applying increased pedal pressure and feeling lucky not to be in a critical braking situation.then i don't see the problem again for some time.have you had other mentions of this type of problem with the 1999 v70 glt volvos?
When applying the brakes going downhill they would click. Sometimes when applying the brakes they will grind and not stop. Owner has ran stop signs on 2 different occasions. Dealer has seen vehicle 3 times, and still cant find the problem because it doesn't happen all the time.
Brakes failed after complete replacement due to overheating.rear caliper failed and caused brake line to close and pedal to go to floor. Car had to be towed back 50 miles to dealer.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70. In 2008 a mechanic stated that the abs, ebd switch failed at 105,000 miles. He did not replace the switch. In september of 2009 the failure recurred and caused the brakes to malfunction. The dealer confirmed that there were no related recalls per his vin. The abs module and the ebd switch were replaced. The repair cost was $822.26. The failure mileage was 105,000 and the current mileage was 120,000. Updated 10/27/09 the consumer stated only the abs feature failed. The brakes continued to work, however, the switch failure also caused intermittent failure of the odometer and speedometer as well as causing the dashboard warning lights to come on and go off. Updated 10/28/09.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70.while driving 55 mph, the abs warning lights illuminated, the speedometer stopped working, and the transmission failed to shift.the dealer stated that the abs module failed and they made the replacement.no other failures have occurred since the replacement.the vin was unknown.the current mileage is 140,000 and failure mileage was 102,000.

Under normal braking conditionspedal intermittently feels bouncy and vibrates. Sometimes there is also a bumping noise. This happens only when coming to a stop, never under emergency braking.braking distance is normal. Vehicle taken to dealer 5 times, replaced hydrolic unit/control module/front brake pads, and all tires. Did not remedy problem. Dealer stated it was normal for this vehicle to react that way during braking.

Structure coupling housing cross member would become unbolted.fuel tank is indirectly attached cloosely by strap to the frame member. This would have causedtank to fall off.
If electrical system fails and only way to open back door is with nonexisting lock, occupants could be trapped inside car.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 25 mph, the left side of the air guide on the vehicle detached and came partially away from the vehicle.it was not seen by a dealer, but the manufacturer was notified.also, 2 years prior, the automatic window control switch refused to activate some of the power windows on a constant basis.the first control switch was replaced by a private repair shop, but the problems corrected for awhile..the second time the problem occurred, the switch was replaced, and the repair corrected the problem.the control switch had to be replaced twice. Due to design (absence of a shield over fuel line), damage to the fuel line from rock in the road surface occurred, which sprayed small amounts of gasoline into the engine compartment and resulted in fire. Mjs
The car was picked up from majestic motors thursday 3 june 1999, within 20-30 minutes of driving the car a noise began which seemed to originate in the rear, it progressively built until it was ear shattering, the car began to vibrate from the front driver and passenger seats back, more apparent in the rear.the dealership was phoned on monday, the saleman returned my call tues, when the problems were described to him, he indicated the rear wheels were probably out of balance and the mechanics must have overlooked the rear window vents.an appointment was scheduled for wednesday 9 june 1999, a loaner was supplied.i returned to pick up the car at 3pm, it had not been looked at, i returned the following afternoon.i was informed they could not find a noise and/or vibration, a mechanic standing at the desk offered to take go for a road test.w/in minutes of exiting the parking lot, the noise began, progressively escalating as well as the vibration.the mechanic informed me this was a common complaint from numerous of their customers and despite repeated attempts to remedy the situations they had been informed by volvo headquarters that it was a design/engineering flaw and not repairable.this was reiterated by the salesman, tom from volvo customer service, mr. I noticed a vibration between 25-40 mph. Dealer found belt separation and cracking. There are 5 or 6 other incidents of this on 1998 and 1999 volvo cars at this dealership. This is a factory defect and safety issue and i am unhappy that continental made me pay a pro-rata amount of $25 for each tire they replaced. (dot number: lmpdaxubtiresize: 205/65/15)

Dt:1999 volvo v70 station wagon glt.the vehiclesuddenly lostpower and speed. Consumer was just driving and it started losing power.when putting pressure on the gas pedal it started bucking.whenconsumerfirst contacted the dealer he told him that if consumerleft vehiclesittingfor a while it would start back. Dealership claimed it was the electronic throttle control module.this part was replaced on 4-1-05, and later failed on 7-29-05.the dealershipreplaced it again at no charge.there have been some other electrical problems. Consumer had not pickedup the vehicle from the dealership as of yet.before these incidents occurred the cruise control quit working, the electronic throttle systemlightand engine warning light came on.
Dt: the contact stated basically the warning light wascoming on in the latter part of 2003. It happened several times. He took the vehicle to the dealer, and the dealer told him that he could have it cleaned, but the warning light could still come on.he would eventually have to replaced the electronic throttle module (etm). The contact had itreplaced in 2-04, andjust found out about the problem with the valves.he called the dealer stating he would like his money back from volvo. Because the car was not under warranty at the time he had the etm replaced, and because the mileage was 64,495, they could not reimburse him. The caller was not the original owner.
My 1999 volvo v70 stalled in traffic causing me to lose power steering.luckily traffic was moving slowly because of an accident and i was able to pull the car over and restart it after several tries.i took it in for service and they cleaned fuel deposits off the throttle, but informed me this was a common problem with this model and if the problem persists, i would have to take it to a dealer for a $1,600 dollar repair of throttle control.
Rough engine idle, fluctuating idle speed, unpredictable acceleration rate.
The idle on my car was rough, and after a mechanic failed to turn up the cause i found a reason on a volvo forum on the web.the problem was a dirty throttle butterfly valve.i cleaned it in accordance to the volvo service bulletin.five thousand miles later i am driving my car in stop and go traffic and the car starts sputtering, racing, and the engine is generally behaving poorly.i found that i could even out the idle and keep the car from stalling in traffic by keeping my right foot depressing the accelerator at all times, and using my left foot for the brake.i was not in any accidents, but almost got rear ended at least once.
Abs brake, check engine light, transmission lights all came on. Third time in 11 months. First service was a soft ware patch. Hardware replaced last week and same problem happened again. Manufacturer unwilling to assist with problem. Dt
The ets (relating to throttle control module) keeps coming on during acceleration followed by very sluggish performance of vehicle.previous times upon light up, i've taken this to the dealer and both times they state nothing was wrong and reset the system.this should have been replaced during the warranty period.i'm afraid that there could be a major accident soon due to this problem.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled under normal driving conditions.the vehicle would surge prior to stalling.the surge was controllable during braking.the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who changed the software of the electronic throttle module, but the problems persisted.the vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who cleaned the throttle module.the problem reoccurred constantly.the dealer could not provide a determination for the cause of the problem on both occasions.the contact also received a letter from the manufacturer concerning an extension on the warranty on parts that included the electronic throttle system.the dealer did not honor the letter.
I have had two 1999 volvo 70-series.one a v70 wagon, and the other a s70 sedan.both had a failure of the electronic throttle module (etm).the etm on the v70 failed at 61,091 miles.the s70 failed at 101,312 miles for me, but since we bought the car used at about 98,000 miles, i do not know if it failed before.the v70 was exhibiting symtoms and was replaced under warranty when i brought it in for service.the s70 however failed on the road in traffic with my daughter driving, while i was also in the car.it was replaced by volvo, but cost me as there was no warranty.
Dt*:the contact stated the ets light illuminated then the vehicle stalled.this occurred at any speed and mainly while turning and applying the brakes.this is an ongoing problem, and happened 50-60 times.the dealership was unable to determine a problem.
1) 1999 volvo v70.ets light appeared on dashboard.2) throttle body assembly defective3) parts replaced with new.
Dt: vehicle intermittently stalledand lost power.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70.the contact stated that the vehicle stalled intermittently.the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the etm needed to be replaced.the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control); however, the manufacturer and local dealer indicated that the timeframe had expired to receive the recall repair, even if the mileage was less than 200,000.the vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified.the approximate failure mileage was 112,000.
During the month of march, 2005, i was driving my 1999 volvo v70 on the interstate at 65 miles per hour when the car jerked several times and slowed to 10 miles per hour; not accelerating pass that speed. I exited the interstate and drove home at the speed of 10 miles per hour or less. To prevent the car from stopping at red lights, i placed the car in park and pressed theaccelerator to keep the car from stopping. I had the car towed to volvo south atlanta and it was determined that the throttle body had to be replaced at a cost of $905.44. The parts were disposed of but i have a receipt for the throttle body, gasket and etm reload.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70. The contact stated that the electronic throttle positioning sensor warning light would illuminate constantly, causing the vehicle to run slow and sluggish. The vehicle would have to be turned off and restarted whenever the failure occurred in order for the vehicle to reset. The dealer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle was repaired for the failure in 2006 under nhtsa campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 93,877.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70.the contact stated that the vehicle stalled in traffic repeatedly without warning.a local mechanic stated that the vehicle needed a new throttle.the dealer stated that ecm902fwas not the designated code for a new throttle.the current mileage is 80,000, and failure mileage was 79,800.ak
Dt:consumer owns a 1999 volvo v70. Vehicle stalled/ died and lost power due to throttle valve failure.
Ets and check engine light appeared and car refuses to accelerate and idles rough.this can occur at start up and then while driving the car.it was diagnosed as a bad throttle body and/or electronic control module.this is a common occurrence in this generation of volvo.
11/12/04 mass air flow sensor replaced12/16/04 map sensor & shut off valve replaced 3/15/05 shut off valve replaced again!1/18 05 master window switch pack replaced - 5/31/05 master window switch pack replaced again!!3/17/05electronic throttle control module replaced!!!5/9/05 oxygen sensor and abs control unit replaced.when the throttle control module failed in march 2005, my 1999 volvo v70had only 55,000 miles on it!i was on the expressway when my car lost power and had no way to get back onto the road safely.....i have spent over $4000in the past year replacing electrical control units in order to make this car safe.the check engine light came multiple times over the past year. I am afraid to drive this carfor fear of something else going wrong with the electrical system.i have four small grandchildren who are with me at least three days a week.
The throttle on our 1999 volvo v70 has failed.the problem was noticed by unusual throttle behavior on the freeway at 60 - 70 miles per hour.after this behavior had occurred several times over a period of months, the ets light came on indicating a throttle problem.the problem caused an unusual feeling to driving the car as if there were some resistance or impediment to the engine running properly.the ets warning light came on the date below listed as "incident date," but the problem was occurring over a few month period before that date.the ets light did not stay on, but there is clearly a problem with the throttle.i took the car to the dealer, lee volvo in wellesley, ma and was told the throttle needed to be replaced.this is worrisome, because the manual says to turn the car off and back on when the ets light comes on, but the ets light will not consistently indicate a problem, when the throttle is defective as ours is.we own a 2000 volvo s70, which i understand may have the same throttle, and that you are considering a recall for volvo throttles.it is expensive to replace the throttle $1,000+, and dangerous as it is a problem which may arise at 70 miles an hour with no warning.
Engine began to run rough followed by loss of acceleration then stalling.car stalled in traffic causing traffic jam.subsequently restarted and driven to dealer for repair.parts replaced were throttle control body, gasket and etm reload at a cost of $942.
Ets light on, dealer replaced etm customer pay.receipts faxed to odi, this voq created from e-mail sent by current owner mr. Scott.the consumer stated the part failed and was replaced before he purchased the vehicle, but he is sure it will have to replaced again.
Failure of the electronic throttle module resiulted in erratic throttle response. Surging on idle was causing problems if brake was not applied strongly enough. Cruise control was also erratic in function. Took to the dealer for replacement @ $1200.00. They gave no indication that this was a chronic problem. I only discovered the chronic nature of the problem on a bulletin board web site for volvo's.
Dt: while driving on 09/10/2005 the vehicle hesitated/lost power and died. Also ets light appeared. In addition, brakes were not holding. This started in 2002.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo xc70 (n/a). The contact stated that the electronic throttle control system warning light was illuminated in 2004. The dealer replaced the throttle body system and made updates to the vehicle computer. The contact was offered an extended warranty to cover the failure for up to ten years from the date of service.most recently, the warning light was illuminated again and the dealer was contacted. The dealer advised the contact that the warranty had expired in 2008 and any repairs would be at the contacts expense.the manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 103,300.

1999 volvo v70 wagon. Vehicle stalled/lost power and died while driving due to electronic throttle module (etm) failure. The etm was replaced.
I own a 99 volvo v70 wagon, purchased used. Vehicle has developed drivablility problems relating to the etm, (electronic throttle module) and will suddenly stop or cut out while driving, often resulting in a very dangerous situation, especially on the highway. Dealer says that this is a very common problem with this year volvo and estimates cost to repair at $800-$1200 but also notes that problem often returns because replaced parts often fail also. This is a problem that is affecting large numbers of volvo cars, and it needs to be addressed by nhtsa!
Dt:1999 volvo v70. Intermittent stalling and loss of power.
I was on highiway 5 in san diego.i set the cruise control at 65mph.when i approached a congested area, i manually pushed the cruise control switch to the "off" position.with the cruise control in the "off" position i continued driving through the congested area.as i was leaving the congested area, i decided this would be an ideal time to push the cruise control switch into the "on" position, in preparation for driving at the higher allowed 65mph speed limit.while travelling at 30mph i pushed the cruise control switch into the "on" position. As the car was new to me, i did not recognize that there is no clear detent signifying the "on" position. Unknowningly i 'overpushed' the switch from the "off" position, pass the "on" position, into the "resume" position (thinking that this ought to be the "on" position).i removed my finger from the switch and immediately the car began accelerating (i later came to realize it was accelerating to 65mph, the setting prior to the switch being turned off).my complaint is that when i pushed the switch into the "off" positon, all prior cruise control settings should have been eradicated (as it does in my gm truck and previous cars i drove).a driver, as i did, not knowing that the cruise control memory does not clear when the switch is pushed into the "off" position, could experience an uncontrolled acceleration and a resulting collision when the switch is pushed beyond the "on" position.an individual, as i, having driven a gm vehicle with factory installed cruise control control is used to having the "off" position separating the "resume" and "on" positions so that the operator must select a distinct, exclusive motion for "off""on"and "resume".
1999 volvo v70 w/61,000.electronic throttle module failure (ets and check engine lights: rough idle on start (surging);slow speed only.dealer service mgr. Indicated they replace many, but not at such low mileage.no indication that failure was imminent except slight, occasional hesitation after startup. Trip length of 3 miles. Subsequent startup and commute to dealer uneventful except check engine light was lit.
The contact owns a 1999 volvo v70.the contact stated that the electronic throttle system (ets) and engine lights remained illuminated.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer regarding recall # 06v441000regarding vehicle speed control.the dealer performed the repair, but the lights remained illuminated.the dealer stated that the tube gasket needed to be cleaned.after the tube gasket was cleanedthe failurerecurred.currently, the vehicle vibratedwhen itwasstarted , and could not accelerate beyond 10 mph.the current mileage is 87,000, and the failure mileagewas unknown.
The volvo began to sporadically lose power and stall.i called the volvo dealer and made an appointment after it stalled while cornering and my wife had almost lost control of the vehicle.on 9/23/04 the vehicle was towed to volvo.they checked for codes, battery cables, fuel and ignition and battery and found nothing wrong.they replaced a relay.total cost was $173.15.the problem was still present and i had the vehicle towed back in on 11/16/04.they then diagnosed the problem as a faulty throttle unit.they replaced it and performed a software reload.the cost of that service was $ 1077.14.the vehicle has not stalled since.
Cars stalls without warning at varying speeds. Sometimes i just lose acceleration without warning- has caused two near causes. I have written in the date of my last incident -but it has occurred intermittently for the past year.
I was driving my 1999 volvo v70 on the highway, and it constantly accelerates and decelerates on its own with no action done by me.in one case it accelerated to the point in which i lost control and caused an accident.vehicle is in the process of having the etm replaced at the dealership at a cost of 1000.00 to me because it is outside of warranty coverage.
"check engine" light came on 8/3/05.took car to dealership for diagnosis.said it was malfunction of throttle that regulates air going into engine.no consequences as of yet.
Vehicle speed control. 1st failure occurred when i was driving my 9 year old daughter and 6 year old neighbor. Traffic was heavy and the surge almost caused me to rear end the car in front of me. Lack of power with normal acceleration which leads to more pressure to the accelerator leading to an eventual dangerous surge. Very noticeable at a dead start, but does occur at different speeds. Explained by dealership that etm needs replacing. Replacement cost will be $800-$1200.
While driving at highway speed 65-70 mph car suddenly jumped forward then slowed and stalled while driving on hwy.luckily i was able to pull to the side of the road without a problem.after a few minutes the car restarted and would drive but was surging just like before it stalled.i quickly drove the car home and parked.the problem has not yet been corrected but was quoted $1000 to replace the electronic throttle module by dealer (wilde volvo in brookfield, wi).the same dealer also told me that they replace an average of three of the electronic throttle modules every week.that seems like a defective part if they change 3 a week at 1,000 each and the stalling could cause a serious accident.
Failure of electronic throttle system occurred.no injuries due to immediate discontinued use after warning light illuminated.after light illuminated, i drove the car straight home from work, parked it and am currently researching where i will take it to get repaired.i have recently read numerous articles on this problem that others are having as well, and wanted to note this incident as well.
Dt:while driving vehicle lost power and died on the highway. Caller said the electric throttle systemwarning light came on when the vehiclelostpower.he was able to get the vehicle restarted but it would not idle right and could not be driven. Vehicle was towed to dealer who determined that the electric throttle neede to be replaced.manufacturer said sometimes these things failed.
1999 volvo v70r awd, 56958 miles1. No noticeable events leading up to near crash except for when using cruise control vehicle had a tendency to not hold steady speed. It seemed to want to hunt above and below set speed in order to maintain set speed.2.stopped at a stop sign waiting to cross a busy highway, started to proceed when clear and vehicle hesitated for 2 or 4 seconds and then regained normal acceleration. Nearly hit broadside because of hesitation of engine. Within 20 miles etm light went on and car went into limp-in mode. Vehicle required several minutes to accelerate to 30 mph and would not exceed that speed. I was 130 miles from home and was required to haul it back on a flat bed because it is an awd.3.replaced throttle body #8644347, software #9438298-3 2518 and gasket #8636753 to correct problem. Cost was approximately $1200 not including towing. Yes the old part is available for your inspection.
While operating the subject vehicle, a volvo 1999 model v70r awd, and attempting a left hand turn through traffic under a green light, the throttle control system failed. As the oncoming traffic cleared sufficiently for a safe left hand turn, the accelerator pedal was depressed to execute the left turn but the engine and vehicle did not respond. The vehicle onlyidled forward into approaching traffic. The vehicle had to be turned off and restarted in order to get the throttle to respond. In my opinion, this failure is equivalent to the throttle cable snapping on a four year old vehicle with only 60,000 miles. If the rate of incidence of occurrence is somehow represented by the number of complaints evident on the world wide web, then this is a common occurrence. It is likely that property and people have been hurt by this throttle failure and this problem should be corrected by a recall.
About a 1999 v70 glt volvo:the sun visor is sagging down and it unexpectedly comes into my line of sight while driving.to be clear, it's straight and in otherwise good condition, but it just doesn't lock up flat to the ceiling the way it should.currently while debating the relatively high replacement cost - $200 just for the part because it has a mirror and light, i've got it strapped up with a nylon belt, keeping it out of my view, but then i now have nothing for low sun driving conditions.it may seem petty to mention this as a safety issue, but it did come down and present a visual obstruction to me while driving.on the other hand, this has never occurred in my now almost 24 year old saab, not even with 240,000 miles on it.nor do we have this problem on my wife's '94 acura legend, where there are over 140,000 miles of use and age.nor have i had this problem in other cars i've owned, back to and including my first:the '73 pinto i had in college, i sold it w/ 105,000 mi. And don?t recall this type of concern!i just think on a newer car, (this occurred on our newest car ever, and before 80,000 miles, i think i?ve been fighting to keep the visor up since 60,000 mi. And now it?s finally flopped down) one shouldn't suddenly have to be dodging their head around the cab to see out the front window, while fiddling with the visor coming down, finally placing it to the side, where it still sags but only providing a minor obstruction - obviously not near as critical as blocking one's front view.so what am i to conclude:do i replace it for $200 - plus labor - (two actually, the passenger side one is getting ready to do the same thing), and then be subject to it recurring?also it occurred the night before leaving on a road trip ct to rochester, ny:i.e.:westerly driving into the sunset and there was no time in the travel schedule to delay for such an unexpected repair.i had to make the drive with the sun visor out of commission.
