Abs/ traction computer failure, premature brake failure, side airbag deployed falsely (volvo v 70 awd cross country).*nlm

My vehicle was in park, and my 8-year-old daughter closed the front passenger door from outside the car. The side airbag deployed for no apparent reason. I have contacted volvo, and they inspected the car on sept. 5. They promised to give me a full report along with a decision on whether or not they would pay for the repair within a week. It's been almost three weeks, and they still have not supplied the report or a decision despite several phone calls that i have made to them. They say that they will gladly pay for the repair if it's their fault, but they continue to put me off and seem to be looking for an excuse not to cover the cost of repair.nlm

Recall 99v236000. Dealer can't get parts.

The contact owns a 1998 volvo v70.while driving between 35-40 mph, the contact attempted to make a left turn and crashed into another vehicle.the air bags failed to deploy.both vehicles sustained front end damage and were towed.a police report was filed. The current and failure mileages were 60,000.updated 03/06/08.*lj

While driving 45 mph on wet pavement going around a curb, the front passenger's tire blew out, causing the consumer to hit a wall.upon impact, driver's side and the passenger's side air bags didn't deploy.

While driving at approximately 45-50 mph driver rearened another vehicle . Upon impact, dual airbags did not deploy, driver hit steering wheel, sustaining injuries with seatbelt on. No indictation of airbag being inoperative. 15,000 worth of damage to front end.

We had tons of problems with the car immed. After purchase-check engine light was always coming on,car stalling, light coming on dashboard, car noises, engine leaks.the car could not be fixed by carmaxas far as check engine light is concerned so we brought the car to a volvo dealer. Check engine light was repaired numerous times yet still came back on. I never got any recall letters concerning frontal airbag issues in 1998 volvo. I always had a fear that all of the electrical problems-dashboard lights, check engine light-would result in a safety problem. I want to know if the airbags were connected and if the car had previously been in a wreck. Did carmax check to see if the srs system was working?

While driving at 20 mph the vehicle was in a frontal collision and none of the air bags deployed upon impact.driver sustainedcracked ribs and other injuries.*scc

While driving at 45-50 mph driver rearended another vehicle. Upon impact, dual airbags did not deploy, causing driver to hit steering wheel, andresulting in injuries even thoufg seat belt was worn. No indictation of airbags being defective.

The ignition switch frequently jams, locked, in the "off" position.the key can be inserted, but the ignition lock will not turn, making it impossible to start and operate the vehicle or turn on accessories or turn the steering wheel, rendering the vehicle completely inoperative.when the ignition is in the "on" position, it can be turned off without difficulty.when it is "off," however, it frequently can not be turned "on".a quick internet search revealed that this is a rather common problem.

Vehicle is experiencing possible electrical problems, the passenger window will not close from the driver's side, the front headlight wiper won't work, the lights on the console don't seem to work properly, and the left headlight went out.

Rear passenger side doors can not be opened manually or electrically. Consumer stated there is no way his paraplegic son can exit the vehicle if there was a fire or collision. Lock motors failed once and were replaced. Mechanic had to break a part in the door to release the lock. *ph

Volvo v70 1998 - fire in engine compartment - car destroyedduring routine driving, engine stops.driver notices smoke coming from engine compartment and electrical systems (lights) blinking.in a few minutes the car is totally destroyed by fire.when i visited the wrecker's yard i found a volvo 850 wagon that was destroyed by fire in the same way!

While driving with headlights on. Then, activatedturn signal lights, and light on dash panel will blink fast, andlet consumer know to change the light bulbs. Also, battery will die without a reason for it.

Battery vent missing, battery boiled over.battery acid sprayed over engine compartment drive belts, power steering hoses and brake lines.

Ignition lock failed.

Consumer stated the check engine light appeared, due to an inoperative sensor.

Ignition switch failed. Nlm

Dt*: the contact stated while parked in the driveway for one day, smoke was noticed coming from under the hood.the fire department was contacted and extinguished the fire.the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop who determined the wiring harness caused the fire.the wiring harness was replaced.the dealer was not notified. Updated 10/18/2006 - the vehicle was last driven about 14 hours prior to the vehicle catching on fire. The service dealer replaced the harness to the abs control unit.

"freeze" plug blew out while accelerating onto freeway.that resulted in very low engine power available, a lot of noise, and ineffective footbrakes.i was able to stop the car with the parking brake.

Abs & trac off light are displayed randomly, obd scan says sensor failed, have installed two sets of sensors to no avail, it turns out encapsulated pc board cracks breaking solder connections. The 1996 850 had the same problem.dt

There have been numerous electrical failures with the car on a routine basis.there have also been oil leaks, gasoline leaks, air conditioner failure and seat belt failures.the car has been repaired almost on a monthly basis since the beginning of ownership.this past week, it has been repaired three times for electrical problems related to the seat belts and air bags. The volvo dealerships have made the necessary repairs and warranties have paid most of the costs, the amount of time this car has spent being serviced is totally unacceptable.even the volvo dealer here in florida (plantation volvo) suggested we research the florida lemon law.the law does not apply to us because the car was purchased in massachusetts.we would appreciate any assistance in getting volvo's attention that this particular car has major flaws, especially electrical.

This car has been plagued with electrical problems. Headlight, taillight, turn signals...all have been replaced numerous times. The stereo and battery have also been replaced. Both the drivers window and the rear passenger windows have malfunctioned causing them to "stick" in the position that they are in. The dealer has replaced most of the bulbs at no charge. I have had 2 replaced while on vacation at various times. I can not think of anything other then the tires, that is not governed by the electrical system in this vehicle. With two small children, this is obviously a concern to me. Volvo as a manufacturer has promised a full system check two times. It never happened. At this point, i don't know that i would trust the car even if it did check out ok.

I just purchased about 2 months ago a 1998 volvo v70 used on 4/3/2014 for 3000.00 . The vehicle drove just fine up until two weeks ago where the transmission seems to be slipping. While i was riding on i695 and was going about sixty miles per hour when the car jerked and cut off, meaning blinking in and out of the electrical system along with the engine as i was pulling over on the shoulder, which is terribly unsafe. I assumed and thought volvo's were great on miles and transmission so i didn't expect it to be having these type of issues. I am a first time volvo purchaser and highly disappointed and it's to expensive for all the hassles. All of the minor issues were expected because of the vehicle being a used car. Also, i cannot even check the transmission fluid levels in order to see if all i need is some transmission fluid, the dipstick that leads to the transmission is stuck, as in i have tried pulling, twisting and turning but to no avail. After purchasing a 300 dollar key pad from the dealer i expect more from the manual and at least to be able to check all fluids on the vehicle. If these minor issues didn't evolve into major issues with my volvo vehicle i would not have an issue. Yet the problem is that these minor issues are indeed causing major repairs which is simply unacceptable and causing unsafe driving hazardous situations that could indeed affect the life of myself and other drivers. Thank you very much forlisten and hopefully directly addressing my concerns. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). Updated 12/8/2014

The abs / traction control unit on these cars fail in unreasonably high numbers.it's such a big business, that mechanics sell thousands of refurbished units on ebay.volvo charges over $700 for the parts, and is avoiding repairing this item because i'm sure some actuary told them it's cheaper to pay claims and defend lawsuits than to protect their customers.i have not experienced an accident or crash as a result, but i'm sure hundreds of people have.

The timing belt holder broke on my 1998 volvo while on driving on us route 40 in chapel hill north carolina. This caused a complete loss of acceleration. Fortunately we werein the right lane and were able to pull off the road.

Had driven vehicle .after routine service whenengine stopped cold, tried starting, but nothing. Smoke started coming from under the hood. Then the engine caught on fire.

The camshaft belt tensioner broke which caused the belt to come off and the vehicle to lost power whiledriving 70 mph. The owner has contacted the manufacturer whorefused to do anything about this. Timing belt tensioner, belt and valves and head gasket needed to be replaced.

Vehicle is experiencing a power loss and has had to be jump started several times in order to get it to start, dealer can not find anything wrong.

A fire started in the engine compartment area without warning right after being serviced by a dealer. Prior to this vehicle stalled once. Vehicle was totaled.cannot determine what caused the fire.

The defective exhaust system leaks into the cabin.cause unknown.please provide further information.

Consumers vehicle is emmiting a foul exhaust(rotten egg) odor which enters the vehicle when the driver's side window is down 2", the catalytic converter has been clean a replaced but the odor persist.nlm

Daily exhaust odor inside car when driver or passenger window is opened a little.this is a health hazard.it happens when there are no other cars around as well, so i know it is not coming from other cars.this has not happened in any other car we have had.it has not happened when i drive a loaner volvo (when my car is being serviced).dealer has checked this out several times and can't find a problem. This car has been in for service on one thing or another every 3-4 months.should i contact the health department since this could affect our health?we have to keep the air circulation button on inside air or exhaust comes in from other cars.is this car a lemon?do we have any options besides buying a different car?this complaint does not have anything to do with the airbags.i can't figure out how to change that information after i reviewed all of the information.sorry.

The consumer's vehicle was tested and found to have high levels of carbon monoxide.black smoke was belching out of the exhaust pipe. *sc the transmission failed.

The catalitic converter smells inside the car while driving.this is a problem that i had with a previous v70. After numerus complaints to volvo they replaced the car with a similar car. Now i face this problem again. It is not as bad when i use the highest octane available and add octane boost.i consider these odors dangerous becouse i get headaches and burning eyes while driving. I would appreciate any info you may have about this problem.please follow up on this complaint. Thankyou.

Strong odor (sulphur?) on an intermittent basis.driver and passengers/children have become nauseous and pulled over to exit the vehicle.volvo claims it is a gasoline problem, but all instructions related to the gasoline type have been followed.volvo replaced the catalytic converter but this has not solved the problem.

My 5 year old daughter suffered a second degree burn on her leg by coming into contact with the exhaust pipe tip at the rear bumper of the car by the lift gate. The exhaust on this car is extremely hot, subjectily, it feels much hotter than other vehicles that i own. I understand that there is a pe underway by nhtsa for this problem and just wanted to supply some data. My daughter is fine and has recovered completely and i don't expect to take any action against the manufacturer. They should be aware of this problem by now.

I own a 1998 volvo v70.with less than 50,000 miles on the odometer, i have had to replace both the air pump and the abs control module. These parts should not have failed on a car that is five years old.since the car is past its warranty period, volvo will not reimburse me for these parts (a total of $1,273).in response to a letter from me, volvo said, "in the event that either of these components is recalled, reimbursement could be considered at that time."please add my name to others who undoubtedly have complained about these faulty parts (air pump - pks70ap and abs/trac - 8602266) so that a recall can be issued. I would be glad to submit to nhtsa both letters between volvo and myself.

Stalling and check engine light.stalling at normal operating speed with resulting loss of power, steering and brakes.the mass air sensor and intake hose were replaced.

Child exiting vehicle burned on the tailpipe due to location.

Had parked vehicle & got out w/child. Child went behind vehicle & was burned by tail pipe which was still hot.

Tail pipe failed.yh

Vehicle was parked after a one hour drive. There is a third seat in the car. Child climbed out of back and burned the calf on the tail pipe. The second child was walking around the car, and burnedthigh on the tail pipe.dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

Child was burned by muffler in rear of vehicle. Muffler is right at eye level to child.consumer feels this is very dangerous. The child sustained 2nd degree burns by placing hand on the still hot muffler.a field rep. From volvo will asess the situation.*jg

Tail pipe caused 3rd degree burn, design is too exposed.yh

Consumer's son was exiting from the rear door. When he stepped down his leg was right up against the tail pipe, he suffered 2nd degree burns. Consumer was taken to doctor and was prescribed anti-biotics for infection due to burn. Incident happened on may 13, which is the first time consumer was taken to the doctor and again on the 15 of may.

The bracket bolt became loose and fell off the roof of the vehicle.please fill in additional information. Dealer is aware of the problem. *ph

For our 1998 volvo v70 xc awd, there was a recall in nov 1999 (99v235/volvo recall no. 94).when our headlight switch suddenly disassembled on the interstate at night in mid-september, leaving the car without a single visible light, i had to reassemble it and hold it together to reach home.we checked with our dealer the next day.the computer records showed that the switch recall had already been done for our car, so i bought another switch.as i looked closely at the switch that was removed, i realized i was looking at the recalled switch, still in the car four years after the recall date.volvo usa authorized the local dealer (not the one who claimed to have done the recall) to refund me the price of the switch.no one seems interested in the incorrect reporting of a recall completion when, in fact, the work was not done, leaving the car unsafe.the dealership reporting the recall completion was leikin volvo, 38750 mentor avenue, willoughby, oh, 44094.are there other references to skipped recalls involving this dealership?

Head lights failed.

The rotors warped in less than 23,000 miles see additional documentation attached from the internet multiple instances reported by others as well.

Left headlight.

Consumer has haddriver's side headlight changed4 times.dealerhas never said what thecause of the problem was, they just change it.

When driving at night head lights keep going out due to the light bulb's that keep blowing out. Consumer had to replace the bulbs eight to nine times.

The headlight switch malfunctioned.

Headlight switch for exterior lights does not work as it should.there is a recall for this switch to be replaced , but the dealer states that this vehicle does not have the right vin number for replacement.the vin numbers are not shown on the recall.

Consumer states headlight switch broke, causing headlights to be inoperative. Dealer states recall has been issued, but this vehiclewas not included due to vin.

Consumer stated vehicle experienced the same problem as stated in recall 99v235000. Tookvehicle into the dealer forrepairs,.however, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

Turn signal bulbs failed.yh

Front turn signal lights stop flashing while rear turn lights continue to work. Removed both front bulbs, filaments ok, appears failue due to arcing of contact materials different from those of bulb leads.cleaned contacts and installed new bulbs, now work fine. Did not discuss with dealer but understand problem is common.could lead to accidents since turn indicators are a safety item.

The turn signal socket appears to have corroded contact terminals.

Car lost total engine power at freeway speed when operating at normal temperature. Would restart on berm upon slight cooling, then failure recurred back on freeway. Car was flatabeded to dealer for service. Dealer first identified fuel pump failure, then said wiring to fuel pump was incorrectly installed. So far, dealer's repair satisfactory.

Intermittent "stuttering" or "sputtering" problem both at idle and at highway speeds. Feels like fuel injection system is misfiring the engine. Car has never stalled, but numerous times when pressing accelerator from stop, sputtering causes delay in acceleration.

Engine has a random mis-fire related to the cpu. Volvo is aware but has not produced any bulletins for an up-grade.mis-fire can cause stalls at idle in cold weather and has potential to cause accidents due to stalls in intersections.i believe that this problem exists in all 1998 models with the 190hp turbo engine.it is annoying and dangerous.

Consumer wouldsmell gas very strongly after filling tank.when taken to dealer on 11/12/9., dealer statedthat a prolbem existed with the expansion tankand that the tank would be replaced.

Failure resulted in gas leaking and a gas smell when gas tank was near full.dt

The fuel tank on my 1998 volvo v70 has failed.the check engine light came on in my car about 6 months ago.after replacing almost my entire fuel evap system, volvo determined my fuel tank had a leak.i requested that volvo replace my fuel tank at their expense, because i feel that a fuel tank should be expected to last more than 8 years.volvo has refused to recall the tank and has absolved themselves of any responsibility for the failure.

Leaky fuel tank.

After filling up the tank, fuel was found to be dripping under the car.it appears to be coming from the expansion tank or its hoses.the dealer needs to drop the rear suspension to get a better look, and then order parts.i've have read about this problem involving other v70s.

There was a "large fuel leak in fuel system".the tee junctions and clamps were replaced.

I was driving about 40 mph, when i ran over a piece of metal that was about the size of a ruler.i heard a loud bang, and then i got home, found that gas was pouring out of the gas tank.it had been punctured.obviously, we all could have been killed if there was a spark.i would not have expected a gas tank to so easily punctured.***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****744064

After filling fuel tank the check engine light came on and there is a very strong gasoline smell outside the car and when stopped inside car.the engine code is for a gross evap leak.i can see fuel under gas tank coming from the top of the tank. I removed fuel pump accsess door and can see fuel bubbling out of the top of the fuel pump and overflowing the area. There is a visable crack on the top of the pump.

I own a 1998 volvo v70 that has problems with the door locks.the car will lock but two doors do not unlock when the master or remote switches are activated.one has to manually lift the unlocking knob first.my concern is that in the event of an accident or the need to leave the car quickly, a young child or someone who is infirm may not be able to exit the car and someone from the outside would not be able to unlock the car door either to help them.for the front door, it is easy enough to lean over from the other side and lift the knob to unlock the door but for the rear door, the knob is placed too far back to reach from the front, hence the concern.from opening the lock, it appears that a small (3 mm) piece of red plastic in the lock mechanism has snapped off.from searching the internet, it seems that this is a common problem for my year and model but that the design fault was fixed on later models.also, apparently the breakage appears to occur when someone tries to open the locked door while someone is trying to unlock it a normal occurrence.i have contacted volvo but they tell me this is not a safety issue and simply wear and tear.thanks for your help.

Electric door locks in door behind driver and front passenger doors have failed. Both will close normally but will not open with key or remote. In dark parking lot, not being able to open door especially with remote means it takes more time to enter car leaving passengers more vulnerable to assault.(note: incident date not accurate but website won't let me proceed without an entry.)

Car exhibits a shudder in the drive train - more noticable at speeds under 55mph.a pronounced shudder occurs when coasting or in trailing throttle between 36-44 mph.dealership says it is just a 'characteristic' of the model.i am concerned that the vibration is caused by mis-assembled or imbalanced drive train components and will result in a catastrophic failure when being driven.

My wife was driving about 30 mph on a local street when she felt a pull when turning left then she heard and felt a sound like the muffler was falling off and heard a grinding noise coming from the front wheels.she immediately turned into a shopping plaza and shut off the car.what we found was that the axle nut and part of the axle had broken off and fallen out of the right front rear wheel.the wheel could have potentially fallen off and luckily she was not on a highway moving fast.the volvo dealer believes that the cv joint for some reason (which have not yet explained) seized and caused the axle to break.the dealer recommends replacing the cv joint and bearing and the axle.the rotor was also irreparably damaged and needs to be replaced.i will keep the old parts.

The contact owns a 1998 volvo v70. The contact stated the rear seat belt became lodged and could not be used. The contact attempted to repair the failure himself but was unsuccessful. The manufacturer advised the vehicle warranty was expired and would not offer any further assistance. The seat belt remained lodged for over three months.the vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 139,000 and the current mileage was 143,000.

While driving 45 mph on wet pavement going around a curb, the front passenger's tire blew out, causing the consumer to hit a wall.upon impact, driver's side and the passenger's side air bags didn't deploy.

The seatbelts do not appear to retract properly.there is a small light in the door of the vehicle which has been broken on 3 occassions because the seatbelt did not retract prior to the door closing.the dealer did repair this and mentioned that they have had several complaints about this defect but there was no recall. Also if the seatbelt becomes loose because of driver/passenger movement it does not retract or become tight around the waist again.to try to clarify this, if after initially setting the belts when you get in to the vehicle and you have movement that allows the seatbelt to expand around your waist the seatbelt remains expanded. So if an accident were to arise you would not be properly restrained.best regards, randy gibson

Seat belt fails to retract fully and catches in door closure. While the impact so far is minimal, ie, scratches the paint and causes me to reopen the door and push the belt inside, my concern is that this will, in time, result in a bent selt belt latch mechanism which could result in not locking completely when the seat belt is engaged and then come loos under stress -- giving me the belief of a safe, secure, volvo 3-point belt but in fact it will give me a one-way trip to arlington national cemetary

The shoulder portion of the rear seat belt on the driver's side is out of the seat back mechanism and will not go back into the mechanism.the middle belt was replaced in august of 97 for the same reason. The rear driver's side is being repaired by dealer at this time.

In late february 2005, my wife noticed that the child seats in our 1998 volvo v70 would loosen up when our children would get in or move in their seats. These child seats were of the stationary type and of different makes. As one of the rear outboard seat belts had already been replaced at no charge for a similar concern in june 2003, we visited our regional volvo dealership to report the issue. New belt assemblies were ordered and on march 15th of this year, both outer rear seat belts were replaced. This time, since we had to pay for the repair, i retrieved the failed parts. Examination of both seat belts buckles seem to suggest that the failure of the belts' child seat locking tab, which is part of the buckle, prevented the child seat from staying securely held in position. These assemblies are available for you to analyze and draw an expert conclusion. We requested a review of the problem by the district service manager and filed an e-mail complaint with volvo's customer assistance center. The vin of the car is [xxx]. My car is a 1998 volvo v70 t5 with 75,000 miles on the odometer.at about 7pm on december 28th, 2005, i moved the car from my driveway out onto the street in front of my house, in order to allow a second tandem-parked car out.the volvo remained parked on the street, doors locked and windows up, until about 10pm.at 10pm i went to move it back into the driveway, only to discover that the interior had caught fire - the fire was no longer burning.the passenger seat was burnt down to the frame, and some of the surrounding trim on the door, dash and center console was burned and melted.the rest of the interior was not burned but was covered with soot.my insurance company - commerce insurance of massachusetts - appraised the car and declared it to be a total loss.i can't say conclusively, but, it appears to me that the passenger side seat heater was the cause of the fire.i note that for model years 1996 and 1997 there was a recall against volvo 850 seat heaters related to a fire hazard, but this recall does not apply to 1998 models.perhaps the recall should be extended to later models.

Problem with ab controller computer. Mr

My 1998 volvo v70 awd.with less than 49,000 miles the abs/tracs warning light began to intermittantly come on (indicates abs system and associated traction control are inoperative).subsequent computerized trouble fault evaluation by dealer's service dept (penkus volvo) indicated that the abs control module was at fault and needed to be replaced (at almost $800).car had mileage within the warranty limit, but was beyond the time limit to qualify for warranty service. I have since done extensive research/internet searches on this issue (note i am a research scientist) and have found numerous instances of this teves 20 abs unit failing.specifically, i have discovered that this 1998 volvo model has been plagued by this! i recognize that all of the historical claims that i've reviewed do not involve death nor personnel injury as a result of this defect, however, there are some documented "close calls." i feel very strongly that your agency, nhtsa, should investigate further and perhaps mandate a recall by volvo.you primarily exist to promote safety in the automotive industry and to protect the american consumer. Please don't wait until someone is killed or hurt before you act! thank you.

1998 volvo - (v70 and others) abs/trac control module fails with 64,000 miles on car. Symptoms are intermittent warning lights. We learned this week that our volvo v70 has a design defect - in that the brake rotors become warped after a short period of usage.the service representative at the authorized volvo dealer where we purchased the car, informed us of this.we have had to have the rotors replaced twice, in less than a year, first in december 1998 and now again in october 1999. The mechanics tell us that the rotors should usually last the life of the car.according to the service representative the rotors are not suitable for the weight of the car in the v70 and 840 series.he indicated that he had contacted the manufacturer and that volvo considers the need for replacement this often, as simple wear and tear.another customer present at the same time also stated she had problems and that most recently in her had been totaled in an accident when the brakes failed.the service representative stated that they have had many customer complaints but that volvo in unresponsive.we are concerned because we purchased a volvo for its safety reputation.we have a four year daughter we transport in the car, and we are afraid of what could happen.not only would an accident harm us, but others on the road.please advise what action we should take.

I bought this car used with less than 35k miles in feb 2002.problem was a frozen right front brake caliper and a faulty right rear wheel speed sensor which engages the abs unnecessarily/randomly.this did not happen for about a year after owning the car.i have been told by my mechanic that the rear wheel speed sensor failure appears to be quite common because he has seen it in many of the same cars.the part that is used to replace it is also a different part number which leads me to believe that volvo is most likely aware of this problem as well but have never issued a recall.there were many other problems with the car such as barometric pressure sensor failure, upper motor mount requiring replacing, ac sensor failure, wheel bearing, etc. All within the period of 1 year but none of these things affected the safety/braking of the car so i do not consider that truly dangerous.those issues involve aggravation and money, not safety. *nlm

The abs system failed during a panic stop, causing the brakes to lock up and the car to skid uncontrollably into the middle of an intersection.fortunately it did not result in any significant damage.there had been no indication of a problem prior to the incident and the abs light was on after the incident and had not been on previously.the problem was repaired by replacing the abs control module.upon discussions with the technician, it was clear that this is a very common failure with these models and it leaves the the abs system completely disabled when it occurs. As my incident shows, this failure can occur without warning and cause a very dangerous situation where the driver is relying on the abs system and instead has the brakes lock up causing an uncontrollable skid.in addition to this incident, the technician also told me that the module had already failed and been replaced previously at 31k miles.this appears to be a defect that is very common and will cause unsuspecting drivers to suddenly lose control of their vehicles in a panic stop situation.

The volvo abs / trac control module is failing at an abnormally high rate.local dealership replaces in excess of 5 of these per month.volvo corporate office will not acknowledge any problem with this safety device, and otherwise refuses to discuss the high rate of failures.other research, including a high demand for non-dealer acquired abs computer modules in the aftermarket industry strongly suggests that those units installed in vehicles are failing at an abnormally high rate.in my 1998 v70 wagon the abs & trac off indicators (warning lamps) randomly light.as a result the safety offered by the abs brake system becomes disabled over long periods of time.every potential cause has been ruled out except for the abs computer module (abs / trac control module).this safety issue needs to be addressed by the nhtsa due to the impending risk to life that continued failures of this safety device will undoubtedly bring.

The abs control module on several models of volvo including the v70 has a terrible track record. When it fails the car is without abs and traction control, making the car much less safe. When replacing mine at the dealership (almost a thousand dollars)i was told that they couldn't keep the replacements in stock because so many were failing, and that the part had been redesigned as a result of the failures. Drivers side door hinge/strap failed causing door to break from frame and become dysfunctional. As it worsened over a few days the door became increasingly difficult to open where it became a safety concern. Volvo mechanic referred to auto metal service shop which replaced/repaired door strap and welded door back to frame and confirmed this was a known "workmanship" defect with a number of volvo models and years. Volvo n.a. Was notified of this 9/13/13 and was interested to see the repair invoice, which was provided to them, but in the end they declined to reimburse for this flaw stating the car was no longer covered by a manufacturer's warranty. When the drivers side door becomes dysfunctional from faulty workmanship that indicates a safety issue that the manufacturer should "man up" and repair/recall or reimburse the owner for, regardless if the vehicle is no longer under manufacturer's warranty. Doors shouldn't just break off from the frame under normal use. There was no crash or abuse involved with this door. It just broke like a cheap, inferior product.

Door lock fails to release manually or electrically.door cannot be opened by any means (from inside or outside of vehicle).if vehicle was involved in a crash or if occupant needed to exit in an emergency, there would be no means of exit from that door.since rear window only goes down part way, no escape from window would be possible.internet search on this problem as well as discussions with volvo mechanics reveal that this is not an uncommon problem for 1998 model-year volvos.most have been repaired under warranty.my vehicle happens to be out of warranty becuase of its mileage and my local dealerships have not been very cooperative in fixing this problem free of charge.i feel that this problem is a serious safety concern, making vehicle emergency exit and rescue difficult, if not impossible.you may not have received many complaints yet because most vehicle owners have had these problems remedied under warranty.one person i have spoken with has had (3) of his (4) passenger door locks replaced already.a service manager of a canadian volvo dealership told me that this has been enough of a problem at his dealership that he feels volvo should repair at no charge (too bad he doesn't work at my dealership).i have contacted volvo na regarding this issue, i await their response.regardless of their response, i feel that it is a bonafide safety concern.

Automobile: volvo v70 wagon 1998on the driver's side door, there is a swing arm that attaches to the door and the car frame. Its purpose appears to stop the door from hyper extending. The swing arm attaches to car frame via a bracket. This bracket is welded on the frame. In my case the bracket came unwelded and on the forward side of the attached area, punched threw the frame column. On the rear side of the bracket, it remains welded to the car frame. It is not clear to me whether it has weakened the frame column that runs from the floor to the roof. The damage was due to normal opening and closing the door and would appear to be due to metal fatigue. Upon visiting a few body shops in the san francisco area, some had told me that this is a wide spread problem with volvo. Also, upon searching on the internet for other people who may have had this problem, there were numerous. Hence, the reason for my complaint. The body shop informed me that they would need to replace the metal column that runs from the floor of the car past the where the door attaches to the frame and ends in proximity of the front window shield. Since the cost will be approximately $2,400 and the car is a 98, i have not decided if i will get it repaired. To install this metal column, the dash panel would need to be removed.

Vibration in front end at 35-45 mph. Vehicle shakes at highway speeds.

Vehicle displays a vibration/shudder between 35 mph and 45 mph, strongest at 42 mph while decelerating. Dealer has checked tire balance, driveshafts, and awd system.

Vehicle has had a vibration in the front end (not felt in the steering column or gas pedal) at speeds of 35-45 mph since i took possession of the vehicle on 8/25/98. Mileage at vehicle pick up = 279. This was reported to dealer on 9/29/98, (mileage 2035),when i had the speed range and knew it was not caused by road conditions. On november 1, 1998 this manifested into a shake in the front end at highway speeds. This condition, (shake in the front end),occurred again on 11/6/98, also at highway speeds. The shake in the front end has been reported to the dealer and the manufacturer verbally but has not been documented. I have not driven the vehicle since 11/9/98 with the exception of 11/11 and 11/12 to take it to and from the dealer for the third and final repair attempt (current mileage = 4482). I am currently in possession of the necessary documents to file under nh dmv arbitration board for return of the vehicle. Volvo has offered to take the vehicle for identification/repair of the deficiency but i am waiting for nh dmv arbitration to monitor this. I am concerned about the potential for other deficiencies related to this vibration/shake. This vehicle has exhibited other, reported deficiencies; dual climate controls do not work independantly (not fixed), rear view mirror broke off while adjusting (fixed), speaker goes on and off (not fixed), excessive brake dust on front wheels (dealer cleaned off) , appearance of a fluid stain on right front wheel (dealer states this is combination of brake dust and condensation caused by excessive heat while braking).

At this point i turned off the ignition but that did no good. All the instrumentation turned off but the engine was maxed out and was going berserk. I had a clutch so i pushed it into neutral but the rpms went to the 7,000s. With the keys off, i pulled of the interstate desperately trying to slow down the rpms but nothing worked. I finally put it into gear to try and stop it and it literally 'blew up'. It's totaled. What i want to know is if this has been previously reported, if there has been any kind of recall on this. Volvo wouldn't answer any of my questions. It was a great car but it was a very dangerous situation that i haven't been able to get any answers about. It apparently was some kind of a computer malfunction as a mechanical failure would have been solved by turning the key 'off'! i want to lodge a complaint but don't know where to start.

While driving at about 40, the speedometer went to 0 and stayed there for about 1/2 mile and the odometer stopped working.the speedometer appeared to be working again for a short distance and then went back to 0 while the car was still in motion it started working, only to return to 0 for about 1 mile.it kicked in again.this all happened in the space of 20 minutes.

Ignition key cylinder malfunctioning. Insert key to start car, key rotates 360 degrees without engaging. Takes several attempts to get the key to not rotate and actually start the car. I have spoken to several mechanics and have seen multiple threads on forums that this is not an uncommon issue with these cars and it seems to be something that occurs after 100,000 miles. Estimated cost of repair is $600 - to $800.

Dt: vehicle stalled/died, and lost power due to throttle body failure.

While outside of car, consumer opened door and reached hand in toturn key (wanted to roll up windows), car started/accelerated rapidly, knocking consumer over.
