The contact owns a 2004 volvo s80.while driving 15-20 mph, the contact crashed into the rear passenger side door of another vehicle.the air bags failed to deploy and the seat belts did not engage.as a result, the driver struck his head on the windshield and suffered head and neck injuries.a police report was filed.as of february 20, 2008, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle.the current and failure mileages were 37,000.updated 3/25/08

While driving the srs light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.consumer was able to maintaincontrol of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. Mechanicinformed determined that the seat belt buckleneeded to be replaced, and replaced it. However, the problem recurred.

This model volvo uses a switchblade key, and due to a defect in the key, it does not lock in the extended position when the key is opened.the large plastic key handle dangles down below the ignition when driving.on more than one occasion, the driver's knee bumped the key fob and turned off the car while in motion.this has happened on the highway as well as local road.both keys that were provided with the car are affected the same way.this is exceedingly dangerous in what is otherwise a very safe car.

Broken key can cause vehicle key switch to turn off unexpectedly while driving. The following is my interaction with volvo, i have heard nothing from them since march. Customer by css web ([xxx]) (03/19/2014 08:08 pm)after this vehicle's engine shut off several times while zipping along the interstate i resolved to figure out why and found the following condition would cause it to do so. I have a number of keys on the keyring and the spring which normally holds the key out straight from its holder is broken. When the key/holder is inserted back side up and then rotated to the run position the body of the holder eventually folds half way in against the column, with the other keys on the ring pulling it downwards. After enough bumps in the road the downward force rotates the key out of the run position. If the key/holder is inserted buttons side up this does not occur. Thought you'd like to know about this scenario before the gm litigators get wind of it.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Switchblade/smartkey design continually shuts off vehicle in traffic when other keys are on the ring. Unsafe!

Slowly driving on a road in neighborhood and was signaling to make a left turn and all of a sudden the signal light stopped and the whole car just shut down.no electrical or auto operating at all.automobile totally stalled and would not start.car was entering an intersection necessitating me getting out and pushing the auto back behind the stop sign. Auto would not start again and had to be towed.my regular repair person tried to get it operating but could not and was again towed to a volvo dealer who took 4 days to fix.my issue is if this had occurred at night making a turn or just driving i would have had an accident.

Car began overheating and eventually overheated and ruined engine later mechanic discovered thermostat wasnt working properly so no indication as to vehicle tempurature. Car was on freeway and stopped coming off freeway. Head gasket blew also as well as bad transmission

Vehicle has been hesitant, sputtering and surging when stopped or increasing speed.when stopped the vehicle surges and moves.this can be very dangerous, as we can hit a vehicle in front of us.the etm has been cleaned by collins auto in sc.they told us that it needed to be replaced with a few thousand miles.there is build up in the throttle body and this is due to the oil change interval (7500 miles) which is recommended by volvo.this is a safety issue and a part defect which volvo should fix and replace at their cost.

My wife was driving our two kids in our 2004 volvo s80 on i-75 when the vehicle just completely stopped operating.she could not get the vehicle to the side of the interstate as when she pressed the gas pedal, the engine would not even rev up.my wife an children were stuck in the middle of the interstate in a car that wouldn't drive.the dash stated "reduced engine performance".she called me on my cell in a panic as cars on i-75 were flying by her and swerving out of her lane to avoid colliding with our vehicle.i asked her if she had tried turning off the vehicle and restarting it.the first time she tried, it did absolutely nothing.the second time, it started up without the "reduced engine performance" on the dash but it stated "check engine" on dash.my wife was able to drive the vehicle off and get it home.i took the vehicle to the volvo dealership in our city and informed them what had happened and that i had done my research and thought that it was probably the electronic throttle module (etm) and that it might be under a 10 yr/200,000 mile warranty.the volvo dealership informed me that there would be a diagnostic fee to start.when i got the car back, the dealership informed me that i had carbon build up on the throttle pad and that after cleaning this, the etm passed all of the tests.the next day, the check engine light came back on and the car started to leak gas out the back in huge amounts after i stopped to get some gas.i took the car back to dealership and they looked at it and after fixing it, informed me that they had kinked an o-ring while performing a recall on something on the gas tank and this caused the check engine light.upon driving home, the check engine light came back on again.upon taking back to dealership, the dealership admitted that they had not done a diagnostic fee the first time so that had no idea if the etm was fine or not.but this time the diagnostic showed the etm needed replacing.but no warranty on 04.

My 2004 volvo s80 has stalled dozens of times over the past 2 1/3 years.sometimes it stalls while coasting to a stop.it will generally restart and you can limp home.this is a severe inconvenience, but not a major safety issue.however, it also has lost power and sputtered along at a very low speed while driving on the highway.this is a serious safety issue.my wife and daughter refuse to drive the car on the highway due to this problem.the car has been taken to a volvo dealer 6 times since may 2007 for this problem.many times the problems was mis-diagnosed by the dealer and an expensive repair was performed which did not solve the problem.in may 2007, the car was given a tuneup and software upgrade to throttle control module.in june 2007, the electronic control module (ecm) was replaced.my total cost was $1,165 while the dealer supplied the ecm part as a goodwill gesture.same problem in may 2008.dealer replaced terminal ends in wiring on ecm at a cost of $215.same problem in sept 2008.dealer replaced the mass air flow sensor for $525.same problem in dec 2008.dealer replaced wiring from ecm to throttle actuator and covered the cost as a goodwill gesture.same problem in july 2009.dealer replaced the ecm at a cost $500; part was covered as a goodwill gesture.this appears to be the exact same problem covered by nhtsa action number pe05041 for 1999 to 2001 model years.in that case, volvo extended the warranty to 10 years and 200,000 miles for the ecm.that appears to be an appropriate remedy for 2004 model years as well.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo s80. The throttle assembly needed to be replaced and the dealer stated that the contact would be responsible for paying $350.00. The hose was installed; however, the problem recurred. The contact also paid $4,200 for repairs that didn't remedy the failure. The dealer also stated the throttle assembly is not realted to the recall. The failure mileage was 67,000.

While driving down the road,my 2004 volvo s80 2.5t will suddenly lose power, surge forward or enter 'limp mode" with a message of "reduced engine performance" followed by "engine service required."using an obdii code reader i discovered that these messages and my issue were caused by a problem within the electronic throttle module (etm).i took it into a local volvo repair shop and they confirmed that this was a throttle body issue.if this problem occurs while i am driving within the city, it is fairly easy to pull over to safety, but on the freeway, losing power in the middle of traffic can be dangerous, and this has happened to me, causing a near accident.the issue is recurring and while it does seem to "clear itself" it has returned multiple times.there was a defect investigation, opened july 26th 2005 under nhtsa action numberpe05041 for the exact same issue, and exact same group of problems.the report found that the issue was limited to s80s manufactured between 1999 and 2001.i would suggest that this issue is not limited to only those model years but has affected other years as well.i base my suggestion on information found by searching various volvo owner discussion boards and finding others that have in fact been affected.please take a look into this issue... As it has the potential to cause serious accidents as found in the original investigation.

Hazardous stopping of the engine in the middle of the road. Accident averted by the attentive driver in the back.*la.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo s80. The contact stated that both headlights would fail intermittently without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer advised that the igniters that were used to turn on the headlights had failed. The dealer advised that the headlights had their own igniter and the dealer advised that because the failure was common in his year, make and model, the repair would possibly only last for two years. Th vehicle was not repaired. The vin was unknown. The failure and current mileage was 90,000.

2004 volvo s80. Consumer is requesting reimbursement for the fuel pump replacement due to it leaking.*tgwthe consumer is seeking reimbursement. The consumer sent in a recall letter regarding the fuel pump.

There was a recall regrding fuel smell/fuel pump and/or fuel seal problem in 2010..my car is not regersted in the data base for the dealer to fix the fuel pump. How do i get a dealer vocher to take of this problem.

After noticing a very acute smell of gas i took the vehicle in for inspection.the mechanic advise that i had a fuel leak in my 2004 volvo s 80 . Thats could have been a serious problem and that the car is not driveable in this condition.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo s80. On several occasions, the contact smelled fuel coming from the garage. Upon checking underneath the vehicle, the odor became stronger. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that a fuel leak originated from the top of the fuel tank. The fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo s80. The contact stated that while driving at 60 mph, the contact noticed a fuel odor coming from the air vents. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact was aware of nhtsa campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline) but the vin was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 122,000.

The vin was not available.

The fuel pump it cracks from the top off the fuel pump flange a gas comes from the top off the fuel pump and leak alot off gas the pump is not damage just the top off the lange off the pump it cracks and leaks gas.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo s80. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitted in the cabin and around the exterior of the vehicle. After inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that there was fuel leak. The contact mentioned that the vehicle was exhibiting failure directly related to recall nhtsa campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline).the vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 105,000.

Shortly after moving to north carolina, i began to smell fuel.i first thought that it was the gas cap and replaced it.the smell continued to grow stronger and stronger, to the point i could not keep it parked in my garage in my townhome due to the smell of gas which would permeate the entire house.i also noticed during this time a substantial loss in gas mileage.i took the car in to have it looked at.the auto shop found that the fuel pump was leaking and showed me the back of the fuel tank which was covered in gas.due to the extreme risk, the auto shop stated that the pump needed to be replaced immediately, especially since i was about to take a 300-mile trip.the shop did find the recall: 09v483000 and called the local volvo dealer.the dealer stated that my car was not covered by the recall.i requested that the fuel pump be given to me so that i could review the recall.i then reviewed all the documentation online, specifically the pictures of the pumps which were covered vs. The pump which was bad.my pump matches exactly to the "bad" pump.in addition, the fact that my car was leaking gas to the point of coating the outside of the fuel tank indicates that this should have been a covered incident.

Strong odor of gas outside of car. Recall on similiar cars but not in this area.known issue by volvo but will not repair at no cost as it is outside of the 10 year extended warranty even though car does not have 150000 miles on.fire hazard and should be for all cars of this year and make but offer little if any help.

Fuel smellfrom rear of the car, hard to start.

The car is putting forth a strong odor of gasoline. This was first noticed a couple of weeks ago but was put down to having just filled the tank. The problem has progressed to the point where you can smell gas 20 feet away from the car. We are not allowing our daughter to drive the car as it is an extreme fire hazard. I had the same issue with another s80 in 2015 which also wasn't covered in the recall since it was not sold in a "hot climate". With that car the fuel pump (with defective flange) was replaced and the problem went away. Although i am not convinced that heat is the problem (rather the defective flange) the temperatures in our area ranges from 15 in winter to low 100s in the summer. This is a problem which volvo has acknowledged and it clearly makes driving the car dangerous if not deadly.recall for this problem 09v483000 - volvo recall #r220.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo s80. The contact stated, while driving approximately 60 mph she smelled a strong odor in the rear of the vehicle as she stopped driving. She drove the vehicle less than 5 miles to an independent mechanic who that there was acrack in the fuel pump housing flange. The manufacturer was notified and the vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that her vin should have been included in nhtsa campaign id number: 09v483000 and volvo's safety recall number r220. The failure mileage was not available.

Back in 2010 under the recall adv ,i took my car in to my volvo dealer for the recall for fuel smell and they told me it was ok . The car then had around 90.000 miles or so, now i take my car back with strong fuel smell in 2015 170.000 miles and i reported to volvo head quarters and they tell they will cover the pump only and not the labor to tune of 550.00becausethe car has over 150000 miles on it and is past the recall extended warrinty , but i thought under recall p29075 that volvo is lia for free replacement of parts and labor the first time i took it in. Volvo told me it is about 4 hrs labor when there own recall calls for .09 hrs labor. So it hasn't been fixed yet. I will fix it my self to the tune of a pump (bocsh pump 155.00 )and my own labor.thanks for nothing volvo i guess ifi would of burnt up in this car volvo wouldn't be lia ? my att sure thinks they would of been. Never will buy a volvo again.

Purchased a 2004 volvo s80 in "mint condition" from a used car dealership (good reputation).three (3) months later the transmission started the famous volvo "slip, slide, away".. It rides like a rock, i fell every crack, grain of sand in the road. I replaced the struts, coil springs, lower control arms and other suspensions parts but to no avail improved its condition. Every week or so i get the "stop safely coolant level low" warning on my dash...keep in mind the dealership had nothing to do with these issues since the conditions didn't appeared until 3 months/50000 miles after the purchase. Steering has some play and i'm continuously recovering the directional path slightly. Shortly after i purchased the vehicle i installed all new tires (michelins) purchased a lifetime wheel alignment, which was done during new tire install and recently re-checked. I do 90% of the work myself; i'm an engineer by trade with 40 years of mechanical skills/knowledge. Checked the recall database by vin (safercar.gov) and various other sites and there was no recall on my vehicle. The volvo situation is extremely disheartening for such a well-known european car. Transmission has erratic shifting doesn't know what gear to be in was told by volvo mechanic that transmission was brought up in class action lawsuit because transmission is not strong enough for cars horse power. I would like to have it fixed.

Volvo 2004 awd s80, angle gear failure at 69712 miles. Cost 2555.18 an email to volvo resulted in a $200 rebate. They questioned why the repair was not done at the original dealer but at another volvo dealer, reason was that was where i broke down. After talking with volvo had a strong suspicion that the repair may have been covered better if i returned to the original dealer. Volvo na contacted me again and said that there was nothing else they would do. Internet searches seem to point to many problems with this gear.

The last time i had the car serviced the representative at the dealership said that there were issues with the power steering reservoir.he said that they had apparently made it of the wrong plastic and when it heats it expands and will leak fluid, possibly failing.i don't know what the result would be with the steering if this happened.he said that the item would be the owners responsibility to replace and they were not recalling or replacing them.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo s80.while making a sharp turn at an unknown speed, the power steering activated and made the vehicle difficult to turn.the dealer replaced the power steering rack.there had been no further occurrences since the repair.the failure mileage was 72,000 and current mileage was 80,000.

The contact owns a 2004 volvo s80. The contact stated that when driving over a road bump, the steering wheel begin to pull to the right abnormally. Within minutes, the power steering failed. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the power steering would need replacing. The manufacturer advised there was a previous open steering recall on the vehicle (nhtsa campaign id number: 04v029000- steering: linkages) but the vehicle was never taken in for repairs. The contact stated that she had purchased the vehicle used and was unaware of any open recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 99,000.

Late evening on the 22nd , or early morning, of july 23rd i rented a volvo s80 from hertz corporatio dia locationandlater on the morning of the 23rd drove with my family from denver to carbondale along i-70 at highway speeds.shortly after arriving in carbondale my youngest son and i went from the house at which we were staying to the local 7/11 for a few supplies. While in the parking lot the front axel, driver''s side, disconnected from the vehicle. Had this happened a few hours earlier on the interstate i doubt that i would be able to author this.

I was driving on a highway within the designated 70 mile limit when the steering wheel began to shake and the car spun out of control. It swerved to the right and left and luckily there was no traffic, or a tragic accident could have occurred, since my two children were in the car. I landed in a ditch. The driving conditions were sunny and the road was clear of debris. The dealership repaired a loose grave shield, which they said was caused by something hitting the car, although the road was clear of debris at the time of the accident. I told them that there was a recall on your sight for s80 2004 volvos, but they said my vin wasn't part of that recall. While they replaced the grave shield and commented that no damage was noted they said that something had "knocked it loose" and that may have caused the steering wheel to shake out of control. Since what happened was related to the shaky steering wheel, i am concerned that the problem might reoccur and i am afraid to drive this car, even thought the vin is not part of the recall. Please advise.

Based on nhtsa campaign 04v029000> the control arms are grinding as i drive the vehicle. There is a grinding noise coming from the front right passenger side. I have lost stabilization of the vehicle when in motion. This happens on city streets, highways and while turning. This is a problem that has led to complainantsand presents a danger while driving.

The car hesitates when pressure is applied to the gas pedal, and in order to speed up the pedal has to be pushed again. I have complained to the service department several times. The second time i complained the service manager drove the car and said it the way the car was suppose to be, the computer systemworked that way.i brought it back in with the same complaint and they said other cars had similar difficulties, and they replaced a computer chip. The pick-up was a little better but still not like other cars. The latest failure occurred as i was taking a left out of a driveway.i put my foot on the gas, nothing happened and i put my foot on the gas again, at which time the car sped across the road and hit a telephone pole.
