My son was driving a 2002 volvo s80 with no passengers when he was hit in the left front by another car. He was forced to the right and struck a light pole at approximately 30 mph. The light pole impact was maybe 2" right of dead center. The car was a total loss. Only the passenger airbag deployed from the dash. None of the other seven airbags deployed. The fact that none of the drivers airbags deployed appears to be a fault. The fact that there was no passenger and the passenger airbag did deploy also appears to be a fault.

Numerous defects in the airbag system, one time it was the bumper connection, another time the seat belt tensioner, and then the connection in the steering wheel, then it goes out of warranty and they cannot find the problem and i spend 800.00then it happens again and the dealer says too bad it must be shorted somewhere.....jokes on you.

About two weeks ago, i attempted to install a child safety seat in my 2002 volvo s-80.in order to do the job properly, i looked in my owners manual for the location of the lower anchorage system.on page 12 was the illustration and location of the anchors, but i was unable to find them in the car.the next monday i called the dealership where i had purchased the car and was informed that sometimes volvo didn't install this part.i was told to look in the wheel-well in the trunk.the part was not there.so, i was told to stop by the dealarship and they would take care of it.several days later, i went to the dealership, and the mechanic couldn't find the anchor either.some discusion transpired, after which i was told that my owners manual was in error, and that my car did not come with the lower anchorage system.it was going to cost about $100 to order and install the part.i was angry.afterall, my owners manual showed the location of this system.how could volvo make such an error?i called volvo customer service to complain.i was read the following statement, "volvo reserves the right to make model changes at any time, or to change specifications or design, without notice and incurring obligation."as a result of this statement the company confirmed that they were not going to rectify this situation unless i paid for it, since they are not responsible for the contents of theirowners manual.i leased this car in may, 2002, more than halfway through the model year.i seems to me that volvo has the obligation to see that its owners manual is current at the time of delivery.volvo is a brand that has earned its reputation through safety.i object to the fact that they dodge their responsibilty for safety by hiding behind some legalize.it is the company's obligation to the consumer to see that either their car is delivered as stated, or to see that any erroneous statement and illustrations are removed from the manual.

The contact owns a 2002 volvo s80. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the odometer would go black. The contact stated no warning lights would be illuminated as the control panel would go black. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer or independent mechanic to have it diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist. The failure mileage was approximately 220,000.

The cars automatic transmission will shift to the reverse position without giving any warning under the normal driving condition in its drive position.when it shifts to reverse by itself on the freeway i notice the nose of the car will drop lower and if my foot press on the gas paddle the car will act as braking and engine is making noise. I notice on the dashboard and shifter the gear sign indication is toggle in between 'd' and 'r', when i press on the gas paddle the sign will change to 'r' and as i release my foot off the gas paddle the sign will change back to 'd'. The car is completely out of control i almost got in a major accident, luckily i was trained on manual transmission for my driving lesson, so i put the car to 'n' and shift back to 'd' for the 1st 3 times i switch back to 'd' the gear indication sign is still show 'r' when i put to 'd' only on the 4th try its return back to normal condition. When all this happen i was claiming a hill on i-580 before i-680 junction just pass hayward, ca. Try to imaging driving at 65mph on a hill and transmission swiftto reverse the car will drop from 65mph to 10mph very fastand the cars behind me almost crash into me.according to my mechanic the car suppose to switch to 'safe mode' and transmission should stay in 3rd gear. It is strange the car think its malfunction is normal and did not engage to 'safe mode'.my mechanic diagnoses the car and tells me the problem trace to a neutral switch (pnp switch) inside the transmission. And after contact nearest dealer fremont motor cars the parts department confirm that the pnp switch is build inside the transmission and would need a new transmission. The gm-sourced 4t65ev/gt transmissions usually show symptoms of failure by suddenly slipping while in gear. There has not been a recall for this issue, but the faults are widely known and documented. This car is still drivable it's not bad, if don't acted up. It still thinks it has no problem at all which is very dangers.

While driving at speed tachometer dropped to 900 rpm from about 3500 with an 18 wheeler not more than 6 car lengthsbehind me,needless to say if it weren't for diving onto the shoulder as is decelerated rapidly to 20 mph in a matter of seconds i would have been rear-ended with my family in the car. This is a known issue. Volvo has extended the warranty on some of the etms to 10 years/200,000 miles. When i called volvo to ask if this model was part of that extended warranty they told me that it only covered '99-01' and that they would not repair it as " things break when they get old", and that i should drive it to the shop for diagnosis, at my own peril. They alsoinformed me it would take a class action lawsuit to change this.why should it take a lawsuit or death of a whole car full of people to get someone to take accountability for use of substandard parts? i drove the car home in "limp mode " and parked it.today i went out to see if it would run and drive, to my amazement it did, so i took it for a little test <5 miles, and it did the same thing again, this time i was prepared. I checked the codes and it had none in the system. Call me for a first hand account. Sometimes its intermittent. Volvo says this is common. If so, why not a recall? (no other car i've owned has frequent brake light failure) .

Volvo s80 2002 -pa .while reversing rear wheel locked and car could not be driven.parking brake not engaged. Car towed to volvo dealer. On assessment dealer indicated that parking shoes froze up and delaminated causing collateral damage. Another possibility was that parking cable froze up and parking shoes delaminated. Car had approx 85000 miles. Either way this is a defect if occurred on the highway would have had disastrous consequence. Irrespective of age of car cable cannot freeze. Car has always been serviced by dealer. All maintenance done by dealer as recommended by manufacturer. Car underwent spring inspection around month ago. So quality of parking shoes needs to be investigated or parking brake cable inspection should be added. Agreed with dealer to replace and repair defect as i need the car. Requested them to keep the parts available for inspection by nhtsa if necessary. Cost approx $2000.00 which is significant. Safety issue if this had occurred on the highway leading to loss of control of vehicle.

Car surges and hesitates when changing gears, it slows down and accelerates randomly when i push down on the gas. 2002 volvo s80when stopped on a hill, facing down a decline, when you put the car in reverse, then take your foot off the brake...the car 'freely" rolls forward.same thing happens when stopped on an incline and you put the car in drive.almost hit the car in front of me, and almost hit a pedestrian.... The transmission "acts like" a manual one in these situations.you need to use two feet in order to get out of situation without hitting another car (when in a parallel parked situation...etc.)complained to my dealer and volvo customer svc.. They told me that is the way the car is and there is nothing i can do about it.i explained the potential hazard, and he re-iterated the comment.

Failure of 2002 volvo s-80 transmission with only 46,000 miles but 10 months out of warranty (4 year/ 50000 miles). Dealer found code 5300, tcm 0008. Found internal hydraulic fault in transmission. Shift solenoid s1 replaced transmission. A deal was worked out where volvo, the dealer and myself each paid 1/3 the cost of $4200. General manager of dealership told me that "volvo knows they have problem with s-80 transmission".

Transmission problems causing vechile to stop on freeway.

Consumer complained about achild restraint anchorage system problem.vehicle was recalled due to failing to comply with fmvss 225. Volvo stated they could not retrofit the anchorage system into this vehicle.

The driver's seat was adjusting itself randomly while driving.however, the controls would not respond when i attempted to re-adjust the seat.several times while driving, the backrest of the seat would move into a completely horizontal position. Other times, the entire seat (including the backrest) would move as far forward as possible, creating a major driving hazard.i would have to pull over and wait, repeatedly attempting to re-adjust the seat until it randomly started to respond.when i took the car to a volvo dealership, they could not determine any reason or cause for the problem.i could not afford to replace the power seat module at a cost of $850 (parts & labor).the dealership unplugged the module after adjusting the seat to fit me, but that is not a proper solution.a consumer should not be responsible for replacing a vehicle part due to faulty wiring, especially one that creates a driving hazard on the road!

The contact owns a 2002 volvo s80. Whenever the contact would drive the vehicle at any speed over a bump or pothole, the contact noticed a rattling sound in the front end. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the front struts needed to be replaced. The current and failure mileages were 150,000.

I own a 2002 volvo and have had constant problems with the front end. I dealer worked on the front end when it was under warranty. I just spent over $900 to replace inner tier rod ends and control arm bushings. I was told this is normal wear and tear and this car has 47,000 miles? the tie rods are a safety issue and my wife uses this car locally.i have owned many volvos and have never had front end problems with any car i have owned.

I purchased a 2002 volvo s80 in march of 2009 and stated hearing a loud knocking sound coming from the front of the car & when i went & got it checked the mechanic said that i needed new struts so i got the struts fixed for a warping $600 but the problem has recurred 3 times since the repair,i have had it repair 2 times by the same shop but since they tried to charge me labor on the last visit i'm done, the mechanic also said that i needed front control arms which are also expensive.i checked online to see if maybe volvo had any recalls on this matter & they did on 1999,2000,2001 volvo s80 but not 2002 which is my vehicle. This has already been reported as a safety issue in volvo s80 99-2001 so im just wondering why haven't it reached the 2002 because i went to the complaints online & more people are complaining than myself. My steering wheel is off centered,my car shifts when i hit bumps in the road & my traction is not as good as it was when i 1st bought it. All i have to say is my front end is really screwed up & it's not my fault so can anyone do anything to help me out. Thanks a million!!!!
