On november 9th my wife was driving our 2001 volvo s80 to church. She parked the car but it began to move. It accelerated and she wound up driving into a tree to avoid hitting other cars. She was also worried that children from the school might be around. The car was in park. The engine was off. The emergency break was on. The steering wheel was tight, making it difficult to steer since the engine was off. The church secretary observed the incident. She saw smoke coming out of the back of the car which would indicate the emergency break was on. When she first reached the car with my wife in it she noted that the car was in park.

On two occasions, in january of 2006 and june of 2006, my 2001 volvo s-80 sedan stalled without warning while driving.i had no power and steering it was extremely difficult.for the first incident in january, keystone volvo replaced my mass air flow sensor.when the car stalled again in june, they replaced the throttle module.

Manufacturing defect, poor to zero reception on am radio.the problem existed since the beginning purchased car new from dealer.the dealer refused to repair at no cost.*sc

Throttle control failure. Speed reduced, info screen showed reduced performance. After sitting for an hour, car started and was driven to dealer who replaced throttle control mechanism.no further failures have occurred. This complaint is already on file from other vehicle owners.

Takata recall" frist i called volvo to inquire about recalls referening to the cooling system and the fuel pump the first lady i spoke with informed me this problem was under recalls and to take my car to get it serviced at the nearest dealer after taking my car to the dealer at 7:15am 4hours later after i called them first they now are saying that there isn't anything they can do with my car and they do not know who told me that false information. On top of all of this my car accelerates by itself lucky when it happens i hurry and push the brakes and the car dosent start up once turning the key even the guy say that's always been a problem. Based on how expensive this car is it seem there wouldn't be many problems with it or it seem that they would at least try todo something about the false informationover all i will never buy another volvo again!

2001 volvo s80 4 door sedan.engine stalling with no warning.restart but shut-off again.mileage on second occurrence 71141 on 7/28/05 at a cost of approx. $1500.mileage on first occurrence 50348 on 12/19/04, covered under warranty.both times electronic throttle control module was diagnosed.

This is my second complaint for the same vehicle.see odi no. 10131592. Despite repairs made in june 2005, the car stalled approximately 12 times on friday, august 5, 2005.i drove it straight to the dealership on the 5th for diagnosis and repair.diagnostic codes now identified a faulty mass air flow sensor and electronic throttle module/reload and throttle body.these repairs were made to the car.

Nhtsa action number : pe05041while driving through a busy intersection of a local highway the car died.i pushed the car off into a localoil change/ lube garage.they manage to get it started although it was idling roughly.i brought it to volvo of fort washington to have the etm replaced at a charge of over $600.volvo of north america said that they don't believe they are responsible although many have had the same issue.

Car was racing and stalling on highway and while idling.took it in and diagnostic codes identified a faulty mass air flow sensor and electronic throttle module/reload and throttle body. Car has 48,800 miles on it. These repairs cost over $1400.please have volvo look into this and a recall is justified.

I was driving on the expressway while on vacation in birmingham, al and the vehicle lost power.while it did restart, it would regain power to continue. I had the vehicle towed to a volvo dealer who replaced the engine control module at cost of over $850.

I experienced a sudden loss of engine power while driving on the interstate.at approximately 60 mph, my volvo 2001 s80 sedan experienced a sudden loss of power with an instrument indication of "reduced power".the problem recurred twice before i was forced to take the car to a volvo dealer for diagnosis and repair.the dealership advised me that the auto required a major repair, for which i incurred a bill of $1142.68.the following items were billed:replace throttle body and download new software for throttle bodymodule:(1) 8644347 0 throttle body ($561.90)(1) 8636753 9 gasket ($4.69)(1) 9438290 0 etm reload ($40.95)(1) 1003 clamp ($1.75)replace pedal sensor:(1) 111 cp ($85.00)(1) 30683516 accelerator pe ($108.39)parts total: $717.68labor total: $425.00.

Dt: the consumer was experiencing engine stalling.the dealer replaced the electronic throttle module.

The following narrative is submitted as information regarding the nhtsa preliminary evaluation on july 26, 2005 to investigate avariety of concerns resulting from the failure or reduced performance of the electronic throttle module in 1999-2001 volvo passenger cars.in addition too the high failure rate of the etm, the air mass meter failure rate in my opinion is just as high and as costly.it has been my experience as well as others to loose engine power when this unit fails.this unit failed while stopped at a light.once the light changed the car refused to move.once the accelerator was depressed the engine would bog down and shut off.this resulted in a$425 repair and $35 tow.my vehicle is a volvo s-80, 2001.

Placed my vehicle in reverse to pull back out of my garage & my car accelerated out of control. I was forced into a parking sign that scratched and dented my left rear bumper. In the last 2 1/2 months related problems continue where my car surges & also experiences sudden & unexpected reduced performance. When i accelerate my car feels like it is stuck in gear & won't respond. It is a safety hazard!! again!!!this duplicates the same electronic throttle module problem i had in august of 2005. After taking my car in 4 times (not knowing what the problem was), it was finally determined it is the etm again. Volvo performed a computerized upgrade on the etm & then it was finally recalled in january of 2006.it is another safety hazard ready to happen. Volvo should have in the beginning& should at this time be made to replace the faulty etm!

The contactowns 2000 volvo s80.purchased it under an extended warranty certified used car program from clayton volvo in knoxville tennessee in april 2001.several months later, while the car was still under warranty, the car died in the middle of an intersection. After towing it to the dealer it was discovered the electronic throttle module wasfilled with carbon. That unit was replaced under warranty.a couple years later, the car again died. This time it happened in a parking lot. Thankfully, in both cases it happened in a safe situation.again, the etm was determined to be the problem. But, the warranty had expired. The dealer and the manufacturer refused to recognize that the problem was an ongoing issue. This timethe contact was forced to pay nearly $1000 forrepairs.it was the contact'sunderstanding thatinformation was being collectedon this problem,so hefelt compelled to add thiscomplaint.although hadspecific dates available , the contact couldcheck my records and provide them if necessary..x-ref 10131424, 2 etms installed, smch. The throttle body was cleaned twice and the mass air flow sensor was replaced. Updated 12/07/05.

Took car to get throttle body clean and it did not resolve issues with car.

Sputtering and stalling of 2001 volvo s80 t-6 at low speeds.in june, volvo authorized dealer replaced two oxygen sensors (based on their best guess).car operated satisfactorily for 60 days; now experiencing sputtering and stalling again.

Cabin temperature sensor failed.the climate control system in my 2001 volvo s80 began attempting to strongly cool the cabin on a cold day.dealer informed us that the sensor that detects the temperature in the cabin had failed and was reading 100 degrees in the cabin causing the climate control to attempt to cool the cabin.the part was not covered by the extended warranty. (60k on vehicle)

Our 2001 volvo s-80 stalled twice, so we had to have it towed to the volvo dealer where they charged us $1,044 to replace the electronic throttle control module.i fully support a product recall as this caused a very dangerous situation.

On or about may 3rd, 2005, my wife was driving our 2001 volvo t6 when she suddenly lost engine performance. She was traveling along a busy interstate and she managed to get the car into the emergency lane while holding up traffic behind her. The following msg appeared on the dash, "engine performance reduced".when she got the car to the side of the road, she turned the car off and called me to inform me the car was not working properly.she started the car after a few minutes and it performed okay on the way home.at this time, i thought it might have been a fuel or gas cap problem.she was very close to having a serious accident.the next day she was traveling with our children on a very busy bypass and the same problem occurred.this time, i made a call to the volvo dealer and they informed me to leave the car off for a minute and the computer would reset. Not a good solution.needless to say, she had to navigate the car from the inside lane to the emergency lane while traveling no faster than 20 mph.again, this was a very busy bypass and luckily she managed to get the car to the side of the road.finally, i drove the car the next day to see how it performed for me.again, the car failed (i.e. Slowed to 20 mph on a 70 mph interstate) while i was driving.i called the dealer again the next day and they informed me they would need to see the car in order to diagnose.i informed them i needed recall work performed on an electrical fan so they could check into my "engine performance reduced" problem at the same time.all this said, the car failed approximately 8-10 times before i could get the car to the shop and repaired ($933.00).the problem part was determined to be an electronic throttle module.luckily, my wife, as well as myself, were able to get the car to the side of the road without getting ran over by traffic.this problem definitely needs the attention of the nhtsa.thanks for any help you can provide.

Yesterday morning, in a busy intersection (charlotte nc) my car, volvo s80 2001 just stopped during a turn. It was utter chaos--i was petrified with a large truck only inches from my bumper. Then it later stopped at a red light.on my way home, it wouldn't stay still.it kept jumping forward without the gas being pressed.as i was turning into the mechanic shop this morning, it stopped once again, luckily my rear end was inside the parking lot, otherwise i would have definitely been rear ended.this morning the mechanic says the problem assessed, at a cost of 1000$; but the car may still have the same problem because it is a manufacturer's problem.i purchased this car in may 05.i bought it because volvo boasts of being one of the most safe cars manufactured.well, stopping during turning, going without the gas being pressed and stalling at a light doesn't seem very safe for my 8 yr old.i have almost been rear ended twice, with my young son in the back seat.thank goodness nothing has happened yet.i am currently waiting for my service date, because the mechanics i have contacted are swamped with the same types of complaints.i am very nervous to drive the 9 miles to the mechanic, upset to drive the 6 miles to day care before going to the mechanic, terrified by the thought of being rear-ended with my small child in the car and dismayed that i cant make it 3 miles to work without my car ceasing to operate.please help us.i was going online today to tell volvo about my issue when this web site was displayed.please help my family and other families remain safe on the road in their volvo cars.

2001 volvo s80 t6 - throttle control module failure.

For 6-12 months my wife has complained of surging or loss of power in our 2001 volvo t6 s80 (mileage 56,000 miles). On 9/10/2006 while driving at 35/mph in traffic i had complete loss of power. I was able to coast to rt. Side of highway and restart after shifting to park. Local dealer found nothing wrong. Scary for i-40.

2001 volvo s80 series developed problems with the steering and the braking system.***no answer required***. *mr while exiting a parking lot, the vehicle ceased to operate.the vehicle towed and the consumer was assured the problem had been resolved, however 8 months later the incident happened again.the consumer had several electrical repairs done on the vehicle, such as the interior lights, the power windows, the battery was defective which had to be replaced twice, the alarm would go off for no reason, the head light bulbs and tail light bulbs were replaced. The key would not turn in the ignition, the engine light illuminated, there was a front suspension noise when going over bumps. There was a power steering leak due to a loose hose clamp.the parking brake needed to be adjusted, it did not hold on an incline.

Dt: 2001 volvo s80.the consumer stated that there was an investigation on her vehicle.while driving 40 mphcar stalled, this was the second time this happened.the first timewas in may and the mechanic said it was a computer glitz.i had the car towed into the dealer, and they it was the electronic throttle module.this was repaired at the costwas $902.09.icalled the dealership and they knew nothing about this investigation.but did get this information off the internet.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s80.while driving 55 mph downhill, the contact smelled burning and saw smoke.the vehicle had no acceleration, power steering, or brake function.the contact applied the emergency brake to stop the vehicle.all of the warning indicator lights illuminated.the vehicle burst into flames fifteen seconds after stopping.the vehicle was towed.the volvo investigators stated that the fire was caused by bird seed deposits underneath the hood.the current and failure mileages were 56,000.

I own a 2001 s80 volvo.i was driving on route 78 when my car lost power.it droppedfrom 70 miles to 10 miles. I called volvo and they said to bring it in.on my way i was trying to keep the car from stalling outand therefore was given a ticket for speeding. They replaced the electronic throttle control which cost me $951.00.i recently heard about the government checking into this on tv.thank you for your help.

While on a road trip,my 2001 volvo s80 startedlurching forward and speeding up/slowing down by itself.the car was idling erratically and would stall out.as i was away from home and needed to return soon, i took my car to be checked out.i was told that i needed a new electronic throttle module.i had no choice but to have the car fixed at a cost of over $800.00.now i find out that volvo knew of problems with this particular part and that there may be a recall and i am very angry that i had to pay to replace a part they (volvo) knew was defective!!!additionally, and more importantly, i wonder about the potential danger i and my family were unknowingly subjected to due to volvo's decision to not inform consumers of this defect.

My etm on volvo s80, t6 model (year 2001) has arecall on it issued by volvo but the problem is that this part along with the throttle body is defective and needs constant computer update, and than the etm faults without notice and takes with it the whole infrastructure despite etm being serviced and new software being installed by dealer. The dealer is not always keen on working on etm or throttle bottle issues as they don't get payment on time from volvo and they need to do a lot of paper work to et paid by volvo usa.the car stalls suddenly and one of these days i am afraid this will lead toa major crash as gov.'t can't stop what volvo usa wants to accomplish and that is profits and not recalling their defective equipment.human lives are second to corporate profits has already being noted ad shown.

I was driving on i-75 interstate and when i went to pass a vehicle in the left lane i felt a sudden loss of power in my engine.i then had to cut across 4 lanes of expressway traffic to get my car onto the shoulder.then my car stalled out.whenever i restarted it, it would stall back out again.the auto shop told me that i needed to replace my electronic throttle module, mass air flow sensor, and gas pedal sensor costing me well over $2000.(the old parts are at my house, i've kept them).

Electronic throttle on 2001 volvo s80 failed as i attempted topass someone.engine was programmed to shut down completely. I was left speeding down the freeway at 70mph without steering!

Dt: the battery was defect.the transmission failed.three times while driving in heavy traffic the vehicle stalled.each time the consumer was able to into a parking area.two of the three time the dealer replaced the mass air detector the third time the problem was identified as the electronic throttle sensor.

My 2001 volvo s80 t6 cost me around $3,500 in repairs/maintenance after purchase in the last 3 months. This car has something going wrong one thing after another. To mention some: front sway-bar links, turbo charger drain, bad alternator (that cause other electronics to malfunction i.e. The vehicle's entire heating system), in-car sensor failure for interior air quality , electronic throttle module failure that caused me to have the vehicle towed to the volvo dealership for $190, catalytic converter failure, oxygen sensor failure, the front struts and mounts need to be replaced, yet. Maintenance wise, the 60k maintenance, which the dealership never mentioned that it had been completed on this vehicle ( no paper work for the vehicle was provided to me at the time of purchase), the brakes went bad in two weeks after purchase, the tires needed to be replaced, total cost: around $2,000. I don't know what more to expect to have gone wrong on this vehicle. This car has put me through lots of stress, waste of time, and loss of money. I bought the vehicle for $14,000 and has put in almost $3,500 and it's not even worth $17,000 in the market at this point. Volvo needs to have a recall on their suspension problems (struts, sway bar links, bushings) which happen quite often as i have heard and read on the consumer complaints online, and also for the alternator failure and cause afterwards. Also, if the car had to be towed because of a recall problem, they should cover the cost of tow since the problem was caused by their recall item.

Dt:2001 volvo s80.the vehicle shut down/stalled. This happened three times.each time the consumer stated that the vehicle just stalled.stalling occurred on 10-18-04,5-30-05, and 7-1-05. Consumer was driving d when the vehicle stalled. .the first time she took it to the dealer they replaced a part, consumer was unsure of what it was. The second time the dealership had to replace another part.again the consumer was unsure of the name, andthe third time the vehicle stalled, and by the time it was taken to the dealership it had started again. The steering and the brakes were still usable.dealerwas still unable to find the cause of theproblem, andcurrently vehicle isstillat the dealer.

My 2001 volvo s80 died in traffic as i was leaving the post office in texarkana, tx.it would not restart and i let it roll back to try and get partially out of the roadway.it was towed to the volvo dealership in shreveport, la.the service manager called and told me it was the electronic throttle modulator and would have to be replaced.he called back later and told me the electronic module in the gas pedal had a fault and also needed to be replaced.in total the bill was over $1500.00i researched online and found that this was a high failure rate part and that california had filed a lawsuit to force volvo to do a recall and also reimburse owners who had already paid to have this problem fixed. I called volvo and talked to donna, a customer service rep, who said she would talk to the regional manager to see is there was anything they could do for me.the car was repaired and after a week of phone calls back and forth, of course volvo said they could do nothing to help me with the expense.

Car ran rough rpms up & down felt like car would stall if foot did not stay on gas pedal. Did not feel safe driving because of potential to stall at any time.took to dealer who replaced the electronic throttle module (at our expense). Now we are reading that volvo has reversed its position--but only in sweden not north america. Now car is running rough again and rpms are sticking high, then dropping, do not feel comfortable driving. Volvo says too bad.

While driving65 mph lost steering ability andengine completely shut down. Took vehicleto the dealer, andproblem has not been remeded as of yet. Dealer statesdthat it was a glitch incomputer. Please provide any further information.

I purchased my volvo s80 not even 1 year ago and i am experiencing problems with my car losing acceleration in traffic and idling wildly. The problem has become so severe that at one point at a complete stop, my car surged forward and hit the car in front of me! thank goodness there was no damage or injuries to myself or to the car involved. I took the vehicle to the dealership and was informed the problem lies with the throttle. However, volvo refuses to issue a recall and hides behind the "warranty" song and dance even though they agree there is a problem with the throttles in their vehicles. I did much research (or so i thought) before purchasing my vehicle. I chose volvo because they advertise the fact that they manufacture one of the safest cars on the market. My wife owns a volvo s60 and has had similar problems. I fear for the safety of my wife and 6 year old son. I plan to get rid of this dangerous vehicle first chance i get.

Consumer states that the design of the battery wiring is not correct, the battery is located in the trunk and the wires that lead to the engine run underneath the driver side seat and it can be dangerous to have the wire there. Contacted dealer and the dealer is not willing to do anything.

Vehicle caught fire under the hood, possible electrical system wiring failure.nlm

Takata recall- the vehicle become non responsive when pushing the accelerator, the engine started running rough, the cruise control stopped working, the dstc (dynamic stability traction control) failed and the engine coolant temperature stopped reading. The vehicle started stalling everytime i come to a stop. All this started at the same time while i was driving the vehicle.

Hesitation, surging, loss of power, etc. This car runs so erratically that i am even afraid to change lanes in traffic because i am just afraid that it is going to stop right in the middle and i am going to be hit by the car behind me. I am afraid to stop at traffic lights because the car wont accelerate and run normally therefore ill have upset drivers in back of me waiting until the car decides to move forward. This is very dangerous especially when you are driving with a lot of traffic around you. I have taken it to the dealer but they just say that if there are no messages or codes they cannot do anything about it because volvo wont reimburse them for the expense. This erratic behavior has been happening more and more often and i don't believe it has been a day that has not happened since it first started. I have had an upgrade, a cleaning but no replacement in sight.

While driving at any speed, vehiclewill just shut down. Consumer had vehicle serviced by the dealership, they replaced the mas air flow sensor, but the problem recured 2months later. Please provide more details.ph

I was driving my vlolvo s80 on 07/10/2005 on the highway when it suddenly lost power. I could barely operate it over 30 miles an hour. I got stopped by a statepoliceman and got ticket for operating under 30 miles/hour and negligentoperation. I'm schefuled for an appeal hearing. Throttle was replaced by a dealesrhip, nut they said that it can happen again, since it's the same design part.

Cooling system problem message displayed at 29,500 miles ...dealer found and replaced cracked hoses that caused coolant leak.transmission service urgent message came up. Dealer replaced transmission valve body per volvo. Transmission failed again 36 hours later. Now in shop having complete transmission replaced at 31000 miles! transmission problem occurred right after 30,000 mile service at volvo at cost of $600. I asked volvo for discount on extended warrantee... They refused saying if they did it for me they would have to do it for others.

Volvo s80 the engine part that regulates the amount of air into the vehicle's engine.this has happened to us twice and my wife has been stranded twice having to be towed.we have had to pay all the costs as they are not covered under warranty.have emailed volvo customer service 3 times with no response about the issue.

Volvo s80... Stalls when idling. I almost got into an accident when it stalled in the middle of the intersection.

I was driving approx. 65 miles an hour on i395 and i was in the passing lane. I went to accelerate and move into the travel lane and i was not able to accelerate. My speed stared to reduce and all of the power shut off in the vehicle. No warning lights came on and no indication on what the car was shutting down. I checked for vehicles behind me and around me and put on my hazard lights. I quickly pulled off of the busy highway and managed to stop at the side of the road (middle of the highway - next to the median). The police had seen me pull over and called a wrecker service. The car was brought to the place where i purchased the vehicle (foreign motors east in brooklyn, ct) and they kept the car for the next 3 days. They were unable to determine the cause and this just happened again last month (june 20th 2007). It was the same conditions...driving on i395 when the acceleration stopped and the car started to slow down. I pulled the car over and turned off the car. I waited 2 minutes and turned the key again and the car was fine. I drove the next 45 minutes with no issues.

2001 volvo s80 t6.vehicle stalls without warning when accelerator is released and vehicle returns to idle.problem was fixed once but has returned.dealer & volvo n.a. Say that since there is no computer code for the stall and they can't duplicate it there is no cure.vehicle has stalled on numerous occasions during the last 5 months including 12/17/2006 in heavy traffic the hov lane on the long island expressway.has also stalled in high speed traffic on i95 in stamford, ct and while making turns and going through intersections.

Drove 2001 volvo s 80 on 6/6/04, when parked in garage:coolant leaked out, all at once.refilled coolant and drove to dealer on monday (6/7/04). Car was just in for 60,000 mile service at same dealer a few weeks ago.dealer stated (quote from receipt):"ecm 6110, and fault traced to failed engine cooling fan module. Replaced engine cooling fan module as diagnosed to repair".(old part left at dealer)cost to replace: $505

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s80.while driving 35 mph, the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle shut off.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they refused to diagnose or repair the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to another ford dealer that will perform the repair.the contact stated that the failure has occurred before and she believes that the cause is the vehicle speed control, which is currently under nhtsa recall number 06v441000.she also stated that the radiator was replaced at 28,000 and 56,000 miles and currently needs to be replaced again.the contact stated that the radiator fails every 28,000 miles and the engine coolant light illuminates.the purchase date was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 87,000.

I have a 2001 volvo s80 2.9 and i am experiencing my car trying to push itself and the rpm idling very fast and the car feels like its going to shut off. I submitted a complaint already about my sons s60 and c70, which are have the same troubles as my s80. The throttle control module i think is defective and should be recalled. Luckily my car hasn't turn off on me yet, but one time i thought i was going to get in an accident due to the car jumping from a complete stop.please get this problem fixed. Thanks.

Initially lack of acceleration and sputtering on acceleration, check enginelight and emission system error message.codes reset. Then problem recurred approximately one month later. Dealer provided etm software download.approximately 3 weeks after download, check engine light on, weak acceleration, hesitation or slipping on shifting.

Electronic throttle on 2001 volvo s80 failed as i attempted topass someone.engine was programmed to shut down completely. I was left speeding down the freeway at 70mph without steering!

Message in vehicle displayed "no oil pressure pull over asap." while pulling over "asap" a blue plume of smoke and shards of metal ejected from the rear of the car. Volvo dealership told me that the car had thrown a rod and that it will cost $9,000 to fix the car.

As the consumer was pulling away from curb at 3 mphvehicle suddenly accelerated without touching the gas. Brakes were not functional, and vehicle shot through three intersections before the emergency brake was pulled. Mechanic informed the consumer thatmass air flow sensor was faulty.

Well, well - let's see, i bought a 2001 volvo s-80, t-6 in february 2005 to replace my 1996 740 il bmw - i thought i would get a more economical and safe car.boy was i wrong!to my disgust ipaid almost $20,000 for this used car and within weeks it started acting up.it turned out to be the mass airflow sensor and the throttle body.i finally - 9 months after purchasing the car - have had to get it fixed - over $1200.00.i, like another person who filed a complaint, was making a left hand turn on a very busy road, and the car died while in the middle of my turn.luckily i was able to put it in neutral quick enough and restart it before i got hit.the car also surges dangerously at stops.if you don't have your foot on the brake 110%, the car would lurch forward and hit the car in front of it.i'm so disappointed in this car i will never buy another volvo.so much for looking forward to "one day purchasing this safe car". Now that i have dumped lots of money into this car, taken vacation time to pick it up and drop it off, it works okay.the throttle body was replaced about 2 weeks ago, but the car still feels like its not giving me 100% - but at least it isn't stalling or surging.i still have my bmw - thank goodness.i'll be getting rid of this volvo.ford bought volvo and they are responsible for making this unreliable car.i also understand that there a class action lawsuit against volvo (ford) - it's time they do the right thing and reimburse customers who have been subjected to this dangerous and poorly designed fuel system.

Dt: vehicle intermittently stalled/lost power. There were no accident. The mass air flow was replaced.

We began reporting problems with hesitation and surging in our 2001 s80 t6 several years ago to the service department at our nearest dealer, sill terhar motors in broomfield, colorado.they tried replacing a turbo valve and a software upgrade that was available at the time, and we were told that using the highest octane fuel would be necessary in order to prevent the hesitation. The problem continued.given the inconvenience of the dealers location and that they had not seemed to be able to correct the problem, we had the vehicle serviced for a while at an independent volvo mechanic.last fall the emissions and check engine warning lights turned on, and they replaced an oxygen sensor and/or mass air sensor.the warning lights turned on again, and they recommended that we go to the service department at the dealer.we learned of the "extended warranty" volvo was beginning to offer as a result of the problems in the design of the electronic throttle module.in early december we left the vehicle with the service department at sill terhar, and they did the software upgrade. Within days the vehicle was running horribly and was stalling in intersections.sill terhar had the vehicle towed and reported that the problem was due to a hose that had not been fastened securely. Due to travel during the holidays and the multiple snowstorms in colorado in late december, we drove this vehicle in early january after having put only about 100 miles on the vehicle since the time that it was reportedly fully cleared of problems with regard to the etm, the check engine warning light turned on again.we returned to sill terhar, and they said that the problem was due to a faulty right front oxygen sensor.they were certain that this was unrelated to the etm problem.that most recent work cost us $400. We picked up the vehicle last friday evening and, today, only a few days later, the check engine warning light has turned on yet again.

Volvo s80 electronic throttle module (etm) production defectnot covered under warranty as the defect occurred just outside of warranty.dealer cost to correct is outrageous given this is clearly a manufacturer engineering defect within the throttle body mechanism itself.

Volvo vehicles sudden speeds increase there is a air-box problem which causes the engine to accelerate, and vehicle to lunge forward. Speeds the engine.

2001 s80 volvo, headlights gather moisture anytime it rains. Had to replace before passing inspection.

The 2001 volvo s80 headlight & daytime running light system. The 2001 volvo s80 headlight & daytime running light system.the dashboard lights and daytime running lights are on at start up.during darkness there is no indication that the night time headlamps are in the off position (because the dashboard lights are on and daytime lamps illuminate the road to some extent). The unsafe consequence is that by not turning on the night time headlamps in darkness, the 2001 volvo s80 operates void of tail lamp illumination.my wife is the primary driver of our volvo. She combats the problem by leaving the night time headlamps on at all times.when i drive the volvo, i have a habit of turning the lights off after use.many times, my wife has forgotten to turn thenight time headlamps back on in darkness and has been in harms way as she drives void of tail lamp illumination in darkness! this is a safety issue. This tail lamp problem which appears to be a careless oversight by the design team. This is a problem which should be addressed and retrofitted to the current vehicles affected immediately.dt

2001 volvo s80 sedan traveling at 70 mph on us 75 (limited access expressway) in dallas tx.sudden loss of fuel supply caused the car to decelerate to 15 mph and would not respond to the accelerator. Managed to get car to the side of the road narrowly avoiding two collisions. Car was towed to the dealer where the throttle body was replaced at a cost of $1048.00. I reported the repair to volvo cars of america and also gave the dealer service manager copies of complaints logged on the internet by owners experiencing the same problem. No response from either vcoa or the dealer.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s80. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 09v483000 (fuel system; gasoline; delivery; fuel pump) and was told that the vehicle could not be repaired under the recall because it had been ten years since the vehicle was manufactured. The recall was issued december 7, 2009. The contact had not experienced a failure.the current mileage was 65,000.

Week of 10/10/05 as traveling uphill, my car sputtered and loss power.after nearly being rear ended on the busy road, i was able to limb my car into a parking lot and turn off the engine.after a few minutes, i was able to restart my car and continue driving.today, 10/18/05, as i was entering i-85, my car once again sputtered and stalled.the entrance ramp was downhill, so i was able to coast into the emergency lane as tractor trailers and cars whizzed by me.i restarted the car after a few minutes of being turned off.i went to a mechanic friend and he told me that it was probably the etm and if it was not, it would be the next time the car breaks down.he could not repair it.he estimated the dealership would charge me $1200.00.he reported that he sees this at least once a month in volvos.i took the car to the dealer.an hour and a half later, i was informed my etm needed to be replaced and the cost would be $1150.00.i relunctantly agreed to the repair.i have researched the etm problem over the internet and have learned that volvo knew of this problem years before they sold the car to me. At a personal level, i had to pay for a defective part that volvo hasknown it has a 94%-100% failure rate!at a much higher level, volvo is risking people lives by not informing or voluntarily recalling this defective part.cars stall unexpectively.i was fortunate that i was not on the interstate yet.otherwise, the outcome could have been deadly.

I own a 2001 volvo s 80. It died on the highway in the middle of busy rush hour traffic. Had it towed to volvo and repaired.need a new throttle body and mass air flow sensor. Very expensive repair and was told off the record that this part failure has been much more common than it should be. I am notifying you so that you will look into manner. Seems this should be a recall item. Thank you.

1.my wife has a 2001 volvo s80 t6. The car just died on her at 65 mph on a major freeway. She was lucky to get it on the shoulder and was stranded.2. The failure as stated by volvo is the throtte module.3. Doing research i have found that this is major failure on volvo and volvo continues to deny the problem. There is alott of supporting articles and several class action law suits in the works. The dealer states it will cost $907.00 to fix. Still not fixed!!!!

The vehicle gave no indication prior to the maf and throttle unit giving out the first time. We were stranded on interstate 15 in the middle of the desert. The vehicle all of a sudden just stopped running. Luckily the item was repaired, still under warranty. This same part failed for the second time 9/4/2004. Replaced again afterhaving it towed from residence to volvo of las vegas. Smell of gas and engine surge occurred prior to stalling. Brought into volvo of las vegas 9/2/2005 to have checked for engine surge and sporadic rpm surges. I informed them that it is probably the maf and or the throttle unit, volvo of las vegas says that nothing is wrong. However, i had to pay $105.00 for labor with no resolve. I am very concerned for the safety of my family if this same instance occurs again.

Surging idle speed.car lurches forward at times when accelerating from a stop.car almost stalls when idling in bumper to bumper traffic, requiring you to press on the gas to keep it from stalling, but this makes the car lurch forward even more.several times i have almost hit the car in front of me.this problem is due to a faulty etm (electronic throttle module) that is described in the nhtsa defect investigation shown below.the etm in my car was replacedtwo years ago at 46k miles but the same symptoms are recurring. Nhtsa action number : pe05041 nhtsa recall campaign number : n/a make : volvo model: s80 manufacturer : volvo cars of n.a. In some instances, it has been reported that the vehicles would restart, and in some cases the vehicles were towed. Some consumers allege that after having the etm replaced the new component failed in a similar manner. A preliminary evaluation has been opened to determine the scope, frequency, and potential safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s80 t6. While driving approximately 25 to 30 mph the contact stated that he smelled fuel inside the vehicle. He drove home and had not driven the vehicle since the failure occurred. The vehicle was previously owned and purchased one week ago.the contact called the dealer and the manufacturer and was advised that the vehicle was not a part ofnhtsa recall campaign id number: 09v483000, fuel system, gasoline delivery, fuel pump. The approximate failure and current mileages were 155,000.

We own a 2001 volvo s80 with an electronic throttle module problem that we attempted to have the volvo dealer fix in august 04.the car had 98,000 miles on it at that time.the dealer claimed to not be aware of any problems with the etm, but that they could attempt to clean the system, which they proceeded to do at $566.the problem wasn't fixed, but the dealer said they could now fix the problem for an additional $1000.this really irked me, i never went back, now it is a year later and the car still is not fixed, but it won't pass inspection un til it is corrected.i've visited several non-dealer mechanics who have all said they can't fix the problem, so i'm stuck having to go back to a dealer who has tried to swindle me.i recently became aware of the thousands of complaints about this problem with the volvos, but i refuse to have the untrustworthy and "unknowing" volvo dealership touch the car.i now have found a mechanic who formally worked for volvo attempt to repair the car.it will probably cost me doulbe what the volvo mechanic has said it would, but there is no faith in the dealership.i un derstand there is a class action lawsuit against volvo because of this problem, i will save all my receipts for the possibility of filing a claim either with you or with the lawsuit plaintiffs.

I own a 2001 volvo s-80. There is a dangerous problem with this car . It involves the electronic throttle module (etm). The car at times will not move even though the engine is running and the car is in gear. It just will not move. Particularly when trying to move into traffic. I am aware through my reading of the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of vehicles with the same problem. Volvo knows about this but to date has done nothing to correct it. I also know that nhtsa is investigations the problem and i wanted to list my name with you for a complaint on this.

2001 s80 volvo etm failure.it started as vehicle hesitation, then proceeded to surging forward with no throttle input, then progressed to no accelerator response when applying the brake pedal, then to stalling when coasting leaving the driver with no power steering or brakes at speeds up to 55 mph, then to rough idle and check engine light.all symptoms were present upon taking to the dealer based on some web research to identify to problem.the dealer returned with an analysis for timing belt replacement, engine tune up, engine coolant flush, crankcase ventilation system cleaning, brake system flushing, and mass air flow replacement amounting to an initial cost of $1980.00 us.i requested a conference with the technician, and a review of the diagnostics report.the end result was a maf replacement paid for by me (customer) and amazingly the tech notes recommended cleaning of the crankcase ventilation system and the etm cleaning which was covered by the dealer.total cost was $328.21 to consumer and balance covered by dealer.the repairs were made on 3/07/06, replaced maf unavailable.i feel that i have been taken advantage of and essentially paid $328 unnecessarily due to further web research identifying cleaning of the etm and crankcase ventilation system would in fact cause trouble codes leading the replacement of the maf.

I was driving my 2001 volvo s80 2.9l and was about to make a left turn at a four way intersection.when the traffic flow was clear i pressed the accelerator but the car died.thankfully, i was not struck by the oncomming vehicle.i took the car to volvo of richardson in richardson texas and was told it needed a mass air sensor and electronic throttle body.the factory warranty will not cover the part since it has lapsed.

Dealer has replacefuel tank due to leakages under tank. Feel free to provide any further information.

Leak in gas tank of 2001 volvo s-80. Told by ramsey volvo that it was caused by a "road hazard"-that we must have hit somethingthat caused the puncture to the side of the gas tank even though we were traveling down a major highway from boston to new york and we were unaware of any incident

Most recent is an upper idler arm went causing the timing belt to skip damaging the motor: cost 4k to fix or 5k to install a used motor.pressure test came back (no pressure)pistons are ok.sunroof caved in on my head. I did get cutup with the glass. Car stalled, need new alternator, fuel link shield fell off bottom of car causing the fuel line to drag on road.i had to tape the rubber fuel line up until garage to install a new shield.passenger side safety belt linkage broke (no passenger side seat belt) there are other 'routine maintainence' tires/brakes/ etc that i did have done.i've take good car, but these large ticket items continue.there are always lights out somewhere on this car. One of the tire rims cracked and i need a new one (dangerous to drive highway with that).i did not think volvo would except something like this, when i brought the car to gengris volvo dealer they told me that that 'would not touch' this car and trade-in was not an option.this car is worthless what with all these problems.they told me that this model (2000/2001) of the s80 t6 are lemons and should never have been made road worthy.is there anything you are able to do...i still owe 13k on this worthless car.i should have never bought a volvo - this is my second and and very willing to share this with other potential buyers if nothing is dome by volvo with this matter...there are more problems i can share if you are interested.

Dt: the battery was defect.the transmission failed.three times while driving in heavy traffic the vehicle stalled.each time the consumer was able to into a parking area.two of the three time the dealer replaced the mass air detector the third time the problem was identified as the electronic throttle sensor.

Bought this volvo brand new, have kept up with all service work.at 64,000 the transmission failed without any warning.cost $4,000 to replace.the volvo dealership where i purchased this car refused to respond in anyway.the warranty had expired at 50,000.i felt that the dealer should have responded in some way.they told me they went to the volvo rep., but i have no way of knowing whether they did or not.this is my fifth volvo, purchased four from this dealer.this will be my last.they were uncooperative and unresponsive.they said the volvo guy had refused to even look at my vehicle.

I have a 2001 volvo s80 t6 with 61000 miles.within the last two weeks it felt as though the car was "slipping" out of gear on several occasions... The rpms would flair then normalize. Yesterday the car just quit moving.it was towed to the volvo dealer and i was just told the transmission is shot and would cost $4000 to replace with a remanufactured one.my problem does not seem to be an isolated incident.i've found that its well known the transmission is a problem and since they tend to fail after 50000 miles, volvo's warranty is expired.now i'm stuck with putting the same worthless transmission back into the vehicle only to expect it to fail again in the future.volvo needs to recall the transmission or extend the warranty to at least 100000 miles.

Re: volvo s80 t6 2001have had engine surging for a while. Now the transmission failed with a major meltdown and damage.always did frequent maintenance.also had a catalytic converter go out.must be a defect.saw others with similar problems on line.

This car was stuck in park. We could not shift the car out of park into drive.we were stuck in a line of traffic and it was a dangerous incident. We repeatedly correctly depressed the button on the gear selector knob and and at the same time depresssed the brake pedal ( we have done this thousands of times on this vehicle from 2001 to present without any problems) . It took over 15 minutes of turning off the enigine and restarting it, turning the steering back and forth to finally get it out of park into drive. We are fully aware of the brake shift interlock safety feature. This incident was the result of equipment malfunction and not operator error. My wife and i each struggled to finally get it from park to drive. This is a real equipment problem that needs to be investigated and corrected. My wife and i both drive volvos and are experienced volvo drivers. Any suggestion of operator error is frivolous defense.

2001 volvo s 80 t6 ex transmission failure. Based on personal research it appears that the 2001 volvos have a widespread problem with transmission failure. Transmissions were built by gm for volvo and transmission problems across the entire line for that year are extremely high. Is there or can there be an investigation of this problem. It appears to encompass the entire line for that year.

Initially lack of acceleration and sputtering on acceleration, check enginelight and emission system error message.codes reset. Then problem recurred approximately one month later. Dealer provided etm software download.approximately 3 weeks after download, check engine light on, weak acceleration, hesitation or slipping on shifting.

While driving on an interstate highway at 65-70 mph, my 2001 volvo s80 t6 displayed a message indicating "reduced power".i was able to steer the car, but pushing the accelerator pedal had no effect.i was forced to maneuver to the shoulder and have the car towed to my local dealer.the car would start and continue to run, but the car would not "go".it was as if the accelerator pedal had been disconnected.this was actually the second time that this has happened to this car.the first occurred a mere 20 months earlier.the volvo mechanic indicated - during both incidents - that the electronic throttle control module had failed and would need to be replaced.my car was not under warranty either time - had just exceeded warranty mileage when the first incident happened.in addition to being put into a dangerous situation on a crowded interstates highway, i was forced to pay more than $1000 to have the part replaced each time.

Dt:the vehicle is a 2001 volvo s80.the consumer's daughter was driving the vehicle in traffic when it stalled in the middle of the freeway.she was able to get the vehicle to restart but when she put the vehicle into drive it went backwards.when the consumer got there he tried to get it to go forward and it went backwards. They called for a tow truck to take it to the dealer. When the consumer took it to the dealer they told him that it was the throttle body- etm that failed.this was because the banjo fitting had carbon build up.the throttle body is covered by warranty.and the cleaning of the banjo fitting is not.the consumer feels that it should be part of the manufactures preventive maintenance.when he contacted the manufacture they told him that he could not speak to the people there that decide what is covered as normal wear and tear.the vehicle has not been repaired as of yet, although he does intend to have it repaired.

I purchased vehicle 8 months ago i now have problems with the front and back suspension. The air turns on its own, the axle has broken, the sunroof opens when it wants to open, check engine light has turned on along with maintenance light, my doors will unlock themselves when i lock them and the alarm will engage, the left window does not work , sometimes i cant unlock the doors have to unlock with my hand. My cruise control does not work, the battery stops workingoften, the inside lights work sometimes. It is running terrible , idle up and down i know all has something to do with recall please help!

The replaced right seat belt anchor pulled out of the floor because a "spring clip" failed. I believe the design may be faulty. There is no hole and bolt anchoring the seat belt.

As the consumer was pulling away from curb at 3 mphvehicle suddenly accelerated without touching the gas. Brakes were not functional, and vehicle shot through three intersections before the emergency brake was pulled. Mechanic informed the consumer thatmass air flow sensor was faulty.

After about one year of use the brake pedal goes too low before the braking effect takes place. Resulted in accident. Problem many times reported to the dealer.the dealer admits that there are many similar complaints from customers. Still dealer insists that this is not a problem but this is a construction difference.

The power steering makes a very loud groaning noise all of the time.i am concerned that there could be a steering failure.the dealer has checked this complaint a many times dating back to 2002 and found no problems and said the power steering fluid was normal and not leaking. Problem is getting worse.

Dt: the consumer stated on2001 volvo s80 the steering wheel lockedwhile driving 5 mph. This lasted for about 3-4 seconds and then the steering resumed back to normal. The consumerwas turning the wheel so hard that itbroke the turn signal. The consumer took the car to the dealership and they said that they had never heard of this.the dealer constacted the manufacturer.the manufacturer denied any knowledge of the problem.the dealer could not find anything wrong the car and returned it back to the owners. The car has not had any more problems.

Dt*:the contact stated the power steering reservoir hose connecting clamp leaked fluid.the vehicle was seen by a dealer and connecting clamp was replaced.afterwards, the power steering fluid continued to leak and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer.the service department determined the clamp needed to be replaced again.

Consumer was backingvehicle out the driveway and steering got very tight. Consumer tookvehicle to dealer the next day.dealer found both seals onsteering rack had been blown. Mechanic atdelaer beleives it's a factory defect.

While drivingfender protector had dislodged and was rubbing against wheel of vehicle. Dealer contacted.please add vin.

Defect within steering and suspension. Vehicle will not track straight, it will wander toleft and right, causing an unsafe condition. Dealer attempted to fix defect 3 times , tire pressure, alignment and adjusted suspension, but defect keeps occurring.

When traveling over 45 mph vehicle wonders toleft or right. If hitting any bumps inroadcar will go in that direction.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s80. While driving 5mph traveling over a speed bump the left front tire suddenly separated from the lower ball joint damaging the front end of the vehicle .the volvo manufacturer had not been contacted at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 117,900.

The front left tire was easily torn by rough curbing while pulling out of parking space, the front right tire also went flat on a separate occasion while driving. (michelin size 225/50r17)

My car lurches forward when you are idling as well as driving. I was on a busy street when i pulled out into an oncoming line of traffic when the motor completely died leaving me in the middle of both lanes of traffic. After a time i was able to restart the vehicle. This has also happened in bumper to bumper highway traffic. As you are idling at an intersection or awaiting a train to pass, the motor races and then slows and also lurches ahead. Foot must be hard on the brake or i could rear end the vehicle in front of me. This vehicle has only about 65,000 miles and i have no idea why this is happening. It has been a great car until this started happening. The car is now sitting in the driveway as an unsafe condition is caused by this malfunction.

Contact states: consumerreceived a recall notice about the owners vehicle. Consumer was unable to get it serviced in his area as of last week, and was being sent out of state to oregon to correct the recall. There were volvo mechanics locally that were certified to fix the car. Localdealership sold out. Actual complaint concernedvolvo not allowing the certified mechanics to do the work and requiring consumer to go out of state.

Re: volvo s80 t6 2001have had engine surging for a while. Now the transmission failed with a major meltdown and damage.always did frequent maintenance.also had a catalytic converter go out.must be a defect.saw others with similar problems on line.

Electronic throttle on 2001 volvo s80 failed as i attempted topass someone.engine was programmed to shut down completely. I was left speeding down the freeway at 70mph without steering!

Dt: the consumer was experiencing engine stalling.the dealer replaced the electronic throttle module.

Car surged and ran unevenly. It was difficult to accelerate without surging ahead.took it in for service and they "performed software upgrades to ecm and etm." then, a month later, the car stalled in the middle if an intersection and would not restart. The car was towed to the dealer and the etm was replaced as well as the mass air flowmeter. Software was then reloaded. It has worked well since then.

While traveling at 25 mph, i applied brakesto stop about 30-35 feet behind another vehicle, when my vehicle suddenly accelerated (with my foot on the brakes and) and launched forward andstruck the vehicle ahead of me, causing injury to the driver and the passenger and resulted in a lawsuit againstme.the lawsuit is set for trial on november 30, 2009.

Dt:2001 volvo s80.vehicle stalled/died and lost power due to throttle body failure.the throttle body and gasket have been replaced three times to alleviate the stalling problem.

Purchased 2001 volvo s80 about a month and a half ago.in the past two weeks the vehicle has developed an engine surge and on two occasions has simply lost power while traveling at 55 miles per hour.both times a message was displayed stating reduced performance but the vehicle had no power at all.after pulling on to the shoulder i was able to get it started again.the problem has subsequently been diagnosed as the etm.the car is now parked while i try to raise the money to have it fixed.as a retired state trooper i can only say that this is a very dangerous situation and i hope the nhtsa and volvo will not wait until there are injuries or fatalities to correct the problem.

Dt: the consumer stated that the vehicle stalled / died andlost power. The engine was missing, and when the gas pedal was pressed the car wouldn'taccerlate. The car would only get up to about 20-40 mph. Consumer was going about 70 and the car lost power. The driver was able to drive the car to the dealership, they said the electronic throttle body failed.the dealership replacedit and charged the consumer $883.00 for the parts and labor.

While driving on an interstate highway at 65-70 mph, 2001 volvo s80 t6 displayed a message indicating reduced power.was able to steer the car, but pushing the accelerator pedal ithad no effect.the contact was forced to maneuver to the shoulder, and had the car towed to local dealer.the car would start and continued to run, but the car would not go.it was as if the accelerator pedal had been disconnected. This happened at all speeds. The mechanic determined that the electrical throttle module (etm) malfunctioned.

I have experienced repeated problems with the electronic throttle module on my 2000 s80 volvo.for the last couple years i have taken my vehicle to the volvo service dealer for repeated problems with the car engine surging when coming to a stop.the volvo dealer service worked on the issue multiple throughout the warranty period, stating they knew of a problem with the etm and to watch it.now my vehicle is out of warranty and the problem was definitely diagnosed and i had to pay over $900.00 to get it fixed.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s80. The contact stated while driving 40 mph the vehicle shifted into limp mode and decelerated after the check engine lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the electronic throttle module was defective and needed to be replaced.the manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was previously repaired under recallnhtsa campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 170,000 and the current mileage was 170,200.

Continuous problem with surging engine at idle.when stopped at a traffic light or coasting towards one, the engine surges unevenly inceasing the risk of an accident.i believe the cause is a faulty electric throttle module etm.dealer will on;y replace a map sensor, but problem continues to exist.

Dt: the contact owns a 2001 volvo s80.the vehicle will begin to buck at highway speeds. The cruise control will drop off at random and stop working before the bucking starts. Sometimes at start up it will idle really rough. The contactpurchased the vehicle onjuly 16, 2005 and this problem has been occurring ever since he purchased the vehicle. The vehicle will completely stall as well as run at low speeds. The vehicle failedat least50 times since he purchased the vehicle. The consumerwas not the original owner.the problem has been diagnosed as the electronic throttle module, but has not been fixed at this point.

As the consumer was pulling away from curb at 3 mphvehicle suddenly accelerated without touching the gas. Brakes were not functional, and vehicle shot through three intersections before the emergency brake was pulled. Mechanic informed the consumer thatmass air flow sensor was faulty.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s80. The contact stated that the rpms began to fluctuate abnormally as the vehicle exhibited signs of possible stalling. The vehicle then activated in limp mode and stopped running. The contact referenced nhtsa recall campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control) that dealt with the dirty throttle housing.the recall repair consisted of a software upgrade to correct the failure. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was included in the recall, but the vehicle exceeded the warranty stipulations. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 87,000.

1) driving in a 35 mph zone.slowing down to turn to side street, approximately 5 mph.2) without warning, the car stalled.lost power steering and brakes.i coasted to the intersection and stopped.placed car in park and restarted on second attempt.3)took the car into dealer jim fisher volvo, portland oregon.they checked the throttle control module for cleaning.it was clean so no work was performed.they could not replicate problem, so the returned car with no corrective action. No charge.

Car stalled in traffic and then failed to accelerate at an intersection.paid $900 for a new electronic throttle module and the learned volvo is well aware of problem with the part and that many, many vehicles have the problem.

Electronic throttle module (etm )replaced second time, 50 mph, stalledx ref 10131141, smch.updated 1/4/2006 -

X ref 10131066, 2 etms, smch.8-26-5 e-mailthat is the unit that has caused thecar to to be towed twice.once while driving, and once while starting in a parking lot.the electrical throttle module (etm) failed.

Vehicle stalls without warning. It has occurred while driving at different speeds, on straight aways, on corners and when coming to a stop. The car , on occasion, will attempt to lurch forward while coming to a stop with the foot on the brake.

Dt*:the contact stated the vehicle lurches forward and stalls.the vehicle speed is 25mph and below when the stalling happens.it was taken to the dealer for inspection and the etm was diagnosed as the problem.the etm was replaced; however the problem still occurs.the performance reduced lamp illuminates each time before the vehicle stalls.the vehicle is currently at the dealer for additional testing.

The throttle surges at times without me changing the throttle pedal...electronic throttle body may be bad....

I was driving down a us highway when i noticed my car was 'lurching' forward then would loose speed all together kind of like it wanted to stall.i would push on the accelerator and nothing would happen, then all of a sudden the car would drive normally.i was about a mile from my work, so i didn't pull over immediately.the next two stop lights i almost stalled, but didn't.at the third traffic light on another us highway, i wasn't so lucky - my car stalled and would not re-start.i had to call for a tow truck.my service report states that the code ecm-130a was detected.i figured for sure this would be covered under my extended warranty.volvo said no as it was 'just a dirty throttle unit'.they supposedly took it apart, cleaned it, replaced a gasket, upgraded the ecm pet, and put it all back together and told me to be sure to use premium gasoline by only a reputable gas station, and once every few months use a fuel system cleaner and i shouldn't have any more problems.

No acceleration at times.from time to time when merging on freeways or traffic car would not accelerate.sometimes it would serge.had a few close calls.first had throttle body (etm) cleaned which didn't work then had throttle body replaced two days later at cost of $1,177.16.

I'm a new owner of a 2001 s80 t6 with 66k miles.second day of ownership i'm on my way home in the passing lane of a freeway in ma, traffic slows to a stop.as i accelerate the car stalls.i pull to the left of the traveling lane, put the car in park, restart the vehicle.the next day, i pull up to a red light, accelerate and the car stalls.i put it in park, restart the car, and away i go.no messages, no check engine, no codes that i know of.i travel 100 miles a day, and the problem occurs at least every other day.this problem in intermittant and extremely dangerous.the highway i travel on allows travel in breakdown lanes during rush hour.i need to travel in the right travel lane always in the event of another stall.dealership cleaned the electronic throttle module.problem continues.returned to the dealership.they say, "no codes, no new throttle".that's the volvo policy, gallo volvo, worcester, mass.lou is the service manager.how many times does my car need to unexpectedly stall before my car shows a code so i can repair my faulty etm?it's dangerous to my family and me.

Do to the failure of the electron throttle module my engine has a loss in rpm and dies during certian periods of driving.it is mainly as i come to a stop or when the engine tries to idle.this has happened a number of times.i've had the engine trouble-shooted from failed spark plugs, to failed fuel injectors, but it turns out that the etm was the problem.as the engine dies, all power steering is gone as well as hydrolic breaks.i've had the engine die on me twice in the middle of a turn and i've almost been in accidents both times because the wheel wouldn't turn do to loss of steering pressure.the engin also surges sometimes while stopped.this abrupt increase in rpm moves the car forward and has the potential of causing a rearend collision.i have read many online forums about this etm by that manufacture on volvo vehicles.i would like to strongly encourage there to be a recall on item.i understand why it would be desirable to use electrol throttle, but this defective part has a risk to cause loss of life.

Dt: on september 12, 2005 the consumer's husband hadhis foot on the brake and the vehicle surged forward. The electronic throttlemodule failed and was replaced.

Dt:the contact states was driving on the highway when the car completely stalled, resulting in loss of power.the warning lightscame on prior to the car stopping. She reportedhaving no problems prior to this incident. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, and they stated to contact the nhtsa hot line services and file a complaint. The cause has not been determined.

Etm failure on my 2001 volvo s80 has left it inoperable and a service bill of $1004.00 this is a common problem that has already been stated by several other customers. I would like to see something done about this. Volvo has a better reputation than this!please help.

Vehicle will roll back when easing up off the brakes.dealer has been notified. Please provide additional information.

My 2001 volvo s80 etm (electronic throttle control) failed, this caused a sudden loss of engine, steering, breaking and headlight systems.

I own a 2001 volvo s80, 4 dr. Sedan which i am in the process of trading in because on 3 different occasions this year (2005) the car stalled, the last time i needed to have it towed.after doing some research i noted that volvo had reached an agreement regarding complaints filed in california about the etm module.i believe that was the cause of my stalling.i did have the part replaced, at my expense and the mechanic showed me the part that would not stay closed consequently causing the car to stall.at no time was there an indication that there was a problem - no warning light.while i love the car, i don't feel i can trust it even though a new part was put in.according to the volvo dealer, part would not be replaced unless warning indicator came on.the last time the car stalled was thanksgiving night.

Dt:2001 volvo s80.vehicle stalled/died and lost power due to throttle body failure.. The throttle body and gasket have been replaced three times to alleviate the stalling problem.x-ref 10132057, second etm, smch.

Dt*:the contact stated while in reverse the vehicle accelerated suddenly and ran into a cactus.as a result, the vehicle sustained body damage.the dealership inspected the vehicle; however they were unable to duplicate the problem.the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop, which replaced the rear passenger door and panel.the manufacturer was notified; however no additional repairs were made.updated 5/10/2006 - the dealer replaced the electronic control module.

Llc.year : 2001 component : vehicle speed control date investigation opened : july 26, 2005 date investigation closed : opensummary:the office of defects investigation (odi) has received one hundred and thirty-one (131) consumer complaints alleging a variety of concerns resulting from failure of the electronic throttle control module (etm) in the subject vehicles, including a sudden loss of speed and steering assist when driving in highway traffic and sudden and complete stall without warning.

Vehicle repeatedly stalls at low rpms, decelerating, or coming to stop at traffic lights, off-ramps, toll booths etc.problem is intermittant, and doesn not yield diagnotics on consistant basis.dealers refuse to follow-up on problem as diagnostics are inconsistant.one injury avoiding oncoming vehicle upon exiting stalled vehicle.injury minor, and treated locally.

For the past year (10/04-10/05), my 2001 volvo s80 sedan has had repeated problems with stalling and loss of power steering.it has occurred at slow speeds and up to 40 mph in traffic.i have taken the car to the dealer twice.they can not find any fault codes during the computer troubleshooting, so my warranty will not cover any repair.they suggested it might be "bad gas" and have sent me home twice having done nothing.the stalling problem has occurred five times in the last month.the car has 66,500 miles on it.

2001 volvo s80 t61. Failure vehicle speed control/electronic throttle control module2. Transmission failure - gm transmission.

The throttle control module on my 2001 volvo s80 went bad and the car immediately powered down and was not drivable.i was going up a hill on a road without a shoulder and with a blind curve and had to sit there for several minutes before i could start the car again and proceed.this placed my wife and myself in a very dangerous position.my understanding from the dealer is that this could have happened on the interstate and would have left the car powerless as well.in my discussions with the dealer and with an independent volvo service facility the throttle control module has been replaced on several of the s80 vehicles.it appears that this may be a design flaw or that the part has a very limited lifetime.since the failure of the module could occur at any time it seems like this should be a recall item and should be replaced on all s80s at not cost to the consumer.

Dt:the caller said that while driving vehicle sputtered and stalled. The callersaid that when the problem started it would happen about once a week, and it got progressively worse. It would stall applying the brakes. He said this problem made it very hard to drive in daily traffic. The callerwas able to get vehicle off the road.then, it started back up. He had the electronic throttle module replaced.dealer said the problem was common in this vehicle, and they fixed it. Manufacturer said to call dealer. The caller had the problem fixed about six months ago. He just wanted to let nhtsa know about this problem.

Etm bad/ electronic throttle modulethis has been a nightmare and it's not resolved yet!i bought my used volvo s-80 t6 october 20 th with 76,000 miles.within the day of ownership the service engine required light came on, and i failed mass inspection.i tried to get my money back, but i bought out of state, and they refuse to return calls.i researched the problem and found it was the etm.on wednesday nov 10th 2005, i called my local dealerpioneer volvo in south deerfield mass 1 800 680 2140, and was informed that the etm warranty expired at 70,000 miles, at 76,000 mile, there was no warranty.i asked him about known problems with the etm, and denied that he was aware of any!i asked him for an appointment, explained that he is the closest dealer at 47 minutes away, and that i needed help asap due to failed emissions.he told me "bring it in...at 9 30 am and maybe i'll look at it....when i asked him for a guaranteed time....he said..."maybe in 2 weeks"i decided to fix the problem myself by cleaning the etm, which i understand helps temporarily.i had no choicebeing i am extremely busy in an unflexible job and financially strapped.however, when reinstalling the etm, the bolts are designed to sheer. The bolt snapped and i have been under my car for 3 days....still can't extract it. I need my car! i need it to pass inspection!why won't volvo cover this?

I was driving a 2001 volvo s80 t6 on the highway preparing to pass a vehicle in order to make my exit. At this time the car lost power and i received a message "performance reduction".after dodging a couple of cars i was able to make it to the side of the road.at that time the car would not start back up, i decided to let the car sit and cool down for about 15 minutes. The car would still not start.i had the vehicle towed to the dealership and they informed me that the etm had failed and the oxygen sensor which cost me about $1300.00 to repair.

Volvo s80 electronic throttle module (etm) production defectnot covered under warranty as the defect occurred just outside of warranty.dealer cost to correct is outrageous given this is clearly a manufacturer engineering defect within the throttle body mechanism itself.

My check engine light went on. I took my car to my mechanic who informed me the code was for throttle body position sensor and that there was a recall. I called the volvo dealer and asked them about it. They said, yes there was a recall for software and that my vehicle had gotten the upgrade. I asked if there was anything else they could do about it, the employee in volvo service said no. I received the same answer when i asked them in person. On march 1, 2011, nearly a year later, i asked another mechanic, who informed me that if the software upgrade didn't work, the dealer was supposed to replace the entire throttle body. I called the another volvo dealer who informed me that yes, this was the case. My car was one day out of coverage for the recall now. And sometime within the year my computer was reset and the problem code for the throttle body is gone. I am upset because when it was a problem for me, the first dealer gave me the incorrect information about the recall. I was driving for a long time with my car in limp mode and a malfunctioning throttle body. I am sure that the dealer was obligated to replace the throttle body, since it is part of the acceleration system.i think you should compel them to replace my throttle body or guarantee replacement if my throttle body malfunctions again.

The vehicle began idling roughly about 2 weeks ago. It has gotten progressively worse to the point where it stalls in traffic and at stop lights. It also frequently revs itself up. The service department at my dealer has told me that the throttle controller has failed and that it will cost $880 to repair. I read that there is an investigation in to the failure of this part. It seems very dangerous to me and i am concerned enough to report it as it potentially may cause the drive to lose control or the failure could cause an accident.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s80. The contact stated that the vehicle would hesitate before responding to acceleration attempts. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised that the throttle module had failed and needed to be cleaned and replaced. The throttle was cleaned but the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure after the cleaning so the throttle was not replaced. The failure recurred within a few weeks.the manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance.updated 09/27/11 updated 09/30/11

Dt: the battery was defect.the transmission failed.three times while driving in heavy traffic the vehicle stalled.each time the consumer was able to into a parking area.two of the three time the dealer replaced the mass air detector the third time the problem was identified as the electronic throttle sensor.

Dt:the contact stated the vehicle stalled while driving.there were no warning lights on when this happened.the vehicle was taken to the dealership ,and they replaced the throttle control module at the contact'sexpense.she received an extended warrantyfrom volvo, and it stated she needed to contact the manufacturer for reimbursement.

Vehicle jolts forward whenaccelerator pedal is pressed. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.

While driving 25 mph the throttle failed.as a result thesteering locked and the vehicle became inoperable.

Dt: on july 23 while driving on interstate at 75 mph the owner noticed the performance reduced light"came on . The cruise control shut off by itself. Then owner pushed the gas, there wasa feeling of loss of power. Then, the owner got off on the nearest exit. Stopped for a second, an d the car seemed sluugish.the owner continued on the trip and shut the car off. When the car was turned back onthe owner noticed the performancereduced light went off. The owner took it to a mechanic who said that since the light wasn't on the computer would not find the code. The mechanic said go ahead and drive it since no warning lights were showing right now. Then on august 9 while going 75 mph. The "performance reduced light" came on and at the same the time cruise control went off and would not come back on.there was a feeling of loss of power. The owner took it direclty to the mechanic who advised the car was showing a code indicating a problem with the electronic throttle module. So the owner will take the car to the dealership tomorrow. The owner called the dealerhsip who advised that there was no recall and the owner should just bring in the car for inspection. The owner called volvo and they have advised that they are not helping with the cost of repair becuase there is no recall.did the vehicle completely stall out and die or did it lose power and operate at a reduced speed? reduced speedif no crashes or injuries were there any near-misses caused by the problem?the owner says no near misses yet.the owner will take it to dealer tomorrow. Volvo has advised they will not help pay for repair.has the etm has never been replaced.

I was going through an autobuff's carwash in douglasville, ga and my sunroof imploded!i took my car to volvo and they said that they would only cover the glass, not the labor, nor the cracked windshield, etc.there are more than 81 other persons who have had this issue with their volvo, and yet volvo does not choose to consider it a necessary recall.it is a safety hazard, and i want something to be done about it as soon as possible.

Both front power window regulators failing.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s-80. The contact stated after having the battery replaced, the climate control unit became inoperable. The dealer was unable to reset the unit and advised it would need to be replaced. The contact believed the manufacturer should take the liability for the failure which could potentially become a safety issue when trying to defog the windows, disrupting visibility. The failure mileage was 74,610 and the current mileage was 74,665.

Consumer was refused rental vehicle while 2001 vovlo s80 was having recall work done.consumer has had problems with faulty fuel sending unit.****no answer required***the consumer stated it took 4 times to finally get a window lift motor replaced.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s80.the contact stated that there was a color differential on the rearview mirror, which made visibility difficult.the dealer stated that the computer was the cause of the failure.as of july 5, 2007, the rearview mirror has not been repaired.the powertrain was unknown.the current mileage is 87,400 and failure mileage was 87,200.
