I changed the batteryand the airbag warning light went on. Went to volvo dealer and was told that control module is dead and it cost me $900 to replace air bag control module.

Continuous air bag warning light.car dies on road.get fixed, then air bag light comes on again.ran into a person who volvo airbags deployed without reason and she was injured.after exiting highway, car "died."i am lucky to be alive as the wheel stiffened up & i had to rely on the parking brake to slow down.had to get a "jump start" to get home. Car is unsafe.returned to volvo.also had steering wheel that shakes at higway speeds, alarm that went off while driving, & wouldn't start, remote door opener doesn't always work, service engine light flickered on & off -- said it was an emissions problem.

Problem number 1:on 07/18/2000 found to have none of the controls on drivers door panel master switch were working. My car has been repairing on volvo station from 07/19/2000 to 08/16/2000. Master switch was replaced and software downloaded. It took almost one month to fix my car.problem number 2on 02/13/2001 during high side impact with another car none of airbags and none of side impact protection system worked. Three people were injured. Impact occurred at the right side (passenger) t-bone and right front fender. Volvocars was contacted. They refused to release their technical evaluation of my car. Statement from volvo information is proprietary to volvo and will not be released.problem number #3 04/13/2001

While driving my 2000 volvo s80 about 20-25mph all the sudden lost power to all my gauges, dashboard lights, power windows, & power locks. The radio was the only device that was working. The following message was displayed srs-airbag service urgent. I have noticed a difference on my brake pedal that it does not respond as well as it use too there is a short delay when stepped on. Before this incident i had noticed a clicking noise on the driver side when a came to a stop like a relay chattering & also the ac would come on when the car is turned off. At times the following message would appear frequently alarm needs servicing. I don't know what is causing this malfunctions but if its a manufacturing problem volvo should be liable on correcting the problem & provide us with a safe vehicle.

Another complaint for the volvo s80 throttle module causing the car to lose all power on the freeway. I was fortunate that each time this occurred, i was in a position to get off the road safely. The situation could have been disastrous, however. I work in nashville where every route to work is undergoing road construction and does not have a shoulder to pull off on. Had the etm failed in one of these locations, i would likely have been hit by other autos unable to avoid me. I had the part replaced for about $850 as volvo claimed that it was not a problem and refused to fix it. In addition to the faulty etm is the abs control unit for the airbags and traction control. According to what i've seen on volvo message boards (volvospy.com, swedespeed.com and brickboard.com), this part also seems to fail as frequently as the etm. Mine is failing now and needs to be replaced or i can have it fixed at an independent shop - please check the following website for more information on this shop: http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/ if the abs control unit fails in an accident, the airbags will not to deploy. If the traction control is not working, the car may not be able to avoid a dangerous situation which could result in an accident as well. The part can be made to be more dependable, according to information from the independent shop listed above.the incident date is not accurate. It occurred over a period of a couple of weeks a little over a year ago. I can check the date of repair to give you a more accurate date if you wish.thanks!

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle and exiting, the driver's side, passenger's side and the curtain air bags deployed inadvertently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis but the technicians could not determine a cause for the failure. The manufacturer was notified and agreed to cover the cost of the repairs. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 135,000.

Failed climate control unit driving to work. Air bag system sevice urgent (in info. Box) came on and still on. Eat belt tighten for no reason.

Srs airbag failure and abs brake warning lights and alerts posted on dashboard display. Turns out the problem was defective software and was resolved with a software update. This is a critical safety issue since the failure results in the disabling of the systems. The problem was diagnosed and fixed in about an hour. Volvo clearly new about this problems since the software upgrade (aka a fix) was already completed and available - volvo had to pay someone to fix the software, why pay them if there was no defect. I believe this safety issue should be at least advised if not mandatory for all owners of these vehicles. It is a simple easy way to avoid a tragedy if these systems are disabled by defective software.

Swapped battery at o'reilly's auto parts. All manufacturer safety protocols followed. After swapping out w/new battery: climate control module not working- srs airbag 'service urgent' errors. Volvo quoting $2500 to replace ccm, $800 for rebuild-process. Dim is also fried. No heat or a/c- airbag accidental deployment risk. The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.while drivingat 7 mph the steering wheel locked.the vehicle crashed into a tree and rolled over.upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. The road conditions were clear. The vehicle has not been inspected to determine the cause of the failure.the current and failure mileage were 111,000.

I have a 2000 volvo s 80 and it was sold tome by a dealer this car has so many problems and i feel that when i took the car to volvo they tried to charge me 6400 just to fix the problem like abs sensors, stc sensor , throttle etc i feel its un fair i only had the car for 3days what can i do.

There was a huge side impact with another vehicle. At the time of impact none of the airbags deployed. There were three people injured during the accident.

I was hit on the drivers door side at a speed of about 25-30mph and my air bag did not go off. I sustained injuries in this accident. And i feel after my door had to be replaced and there was damage to my left fender and the strut was bent and needed to be replaced. I feel the air bag should have opened. I feel unsafe in this car. Please advise.

Volvo s-80 airbag failure in a severe crash. 2000 volvo s-80 involved in a single car accident (driver was the only occupant).went off road at 55+mph, spun into a ditch hit the side of a mountain, tossed back across the road and landed in the median.totaled the car.although the side curtain, side impact (in driver side seat) and passenger front airbags deployed, the main driver airbag in the steering wheel did not deploy.multiple minor injuries; unknown if any will turn out to be serious.

The vehicle was involved in a frontal collision, and the driver's air bag failed to deploy.

My s80-t6 air bag came on for no reason at all.after taking it to the dealer, they confirmed an internal fault with srs control module.this module controls the air bag system for the entire vehicle.

Dt*: the contact stated, the airbag indicator light illuminated vehicle was inspected by the service dealer who indicated the electronic control module for the air bag failed. When the manufacturer was notified, the contact was referred back to the service dealer, who offered to discount for the repair.

1) engine idles rough, problem became so bad that car stalls at low speeds, lost power steering & "engine dies" at low speeds (unsafe!).local mech referred to etm warranty program to re-program faultyetm module.took car to dlr, re-programmed etm car died again!turns out bad battery as well: several hundred $$$ to replacebattery.car does not accelerate smoothly, large "shudders" present when merging onto hwy, during transmission/gear shift. Not good!2) airbag "srs-urgent service" warning indicator light is on.good localmech. States this is a $1000 repair.3) "check brake light" warning indicator light turns on when depressing onbrake pedal: good local mech. States that this is "normal" requires exact matching electrical resistance of all brake lamps to ensure that "check brake light" warning does not occur (in actuality the brake lights work fine, the built-in-test is faulty).4) "check engine light" comes on 2-3 times in last 3 months.major service wasrequired.one fault was isolated to fuel tank gas cap: if not secured properly"ecm-4308 (leak diagnostic) large leak" occurs...remedied by twisting fuel cap3 full rotations, after re-fueling gas tank.good local mech. Diagnosed the loose gas cap problem, warned me about it, and didn't charge me (nice!).5)body paint is very susceptible to chipping & scratches.paint or exterior panels are very soft and easily damaged.another shame, this car looks great butdoes not hold up very well under typical parking lot conditions (i.e. Someoneparked next to you opens their car door into the side of your car resulting in a large scratch).solution: purchase a fancy car cover and protect the body paint, if you can! 6) parking brake "seems loose", upon parking car and engaging parking brake thevehicle rolls almost 30 cm bwds or fwd depending on level or inclined surface.

While slowing down on wet pavement vehicle began to slide, and consumer bumped another vehicle. Both passenger's side and driver's side airbags deployed. Cause is unknown.please provide any further information.

Problems concerning volvos. Mr the consumers vehicle has a sophisticated computer system in which only a volvo dealer can fix or in some cases it prevents mechanics from completing the work.

At 70mph my car said reduced performance, and within 30 sec. My cruise control failed, the car reduced to 5mph, and there was no acceleration.i was in 5 lanes of rush hour traffic doing 70-80mph.an eighteen wheeler skidded approx. 50 feet in order to avoid hitting me.he then had to block off two lanes of traffic to assist me to the shoulder.my car would only coast.it was a near death experience for me.i'm thankful my children were not with me.after being turned off over night, my husband attempted to drive it to the volvo dealership.he experienced the same.we were told that it was due to a computer chip malfunction.a chip which controls the throttle, fuel-injection, and cruise control.wow!the service rep. "we haven't seen anymore problems after replacing the chip".we asked why has this not been recalled.the rep. Said "there have to be so many accidents and fatalities reported, before they will recall it".this has left me very disturbed, and reluctant to ever drive a volvo again.i feel sure if it hadn't been for my quick use of the hazard lights, it could have been fatal.the truck driver also concurred.i do not want this to happen to anyone else.they may not be so lucky.

2000 s80 volvo 2.9is dangerous! suddenly when driving throttle dies, acted like throttle cable broke. Then it came back! then it surged at a red light last week, and i had no foot on the gas! volvo said etm(?) needed cleaning / replacing . It was cleaned , still surges, i am afraid it will die on highway while going on an on ramp.

My 2000 s80 t6 stalls in traffic and loses power while driving. Whenever i stop at a traffic light, i'll have to step harder on the accelerator in order to avoid the vehicle behind me from hitting my car.sometimes it jerks so bad i feel that engine may fall off.there's no engine light on or anything. I have called volvo and was told the problem is etm buthas been replaced on my car according to their records. I have taken the car to the dealership and had different components tested out and fixed but that did not solve the problem.

In july 2005, i noticed the car surging, particularly at highway speeds. It cut off, giving a message of "reduced performance" but no "check engine" message. The "reduced performance" message is not listed in the owner's manual. I was able to drive the car at about 5 mph to a turnoff point. I cut the car off to consult the owner's manual and it restarted without a problem. I attributed the problem to perhaps faulty gasoline.on oct. 9, the car abruptly cut off on the interstate, giving the same warning message but this time also displaying a "check engine" light. Fortunately i was able to safely coast across two lanes of traffic to the emergency lane.when i took the car in for diagnostics (to an independent dealer), he said that the throttle body was bad and directed me to several web sites that discussed the problem and the class-action lawsuit in california.on oct. 17, "john" with volvo north america's customer care hotline said that the problem was probably not covered under my extended warranty because of the car's age. I pointed out that it has fewer than 60,000 miles. I asked him about a recall and he told me about the pending investigation by the nhtsa. I also asked him for nhtsa's telephone number, which he gave me.i have not taken the car to my local dealer yet.i am appalled that a company that prides itself on safety would allow people to drive their vehicles knowing that the cars might cut off at any time.

Dt: the contact stated 2000 volvo model s80 caught on fire on 8-26-05. The fire originated from under the hood. It completely destroyed the engine. He was not having any problems with the car prior to this. He was driving at 25-50 mph when the fire broke out. He saw smoke coming from the hood. The fire department was called andextinguished the fire. He was not the original ownerhe did not know if anything was replaced on the vehicle.the current owner did not report any problems with the car prior to this, such as stallingor surgingthe fire department and the police police departmentindicated t the fire was an electricalnature, but they were not absolutely sure.

While driving in highway traffic, the car has a sudden loss of speed & steering & completely stalls. 1st time 3/17/04 throttle body control unit was replaced. 2nd time 11/26/05 mass air flow meter was replaced. Both times was able to restart car after coasting to shoulder. One other time as well, date not noted.these are the same symptoms as reported under complaint pe05041 involving the electronic throttle control module (etm).

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.while driving at an unknown speed, the contact noticed smoke and pulled the vehicle off the road.he opened the hood and noticed flames.he was unsuccessful at extinguishing the fire and called the fire department, who stated that the cooling fan caused an electrical fire.the contact's mechanic informed him of a recall regarding the cooling fan.the vin and nhtsa campaign id number were unknown.the failure and current mileages were 78,000.

Electronic throttle systemthe problem is not being handled responsibly and the dealers useintimidation and then bully their clients into paying for other services. They refuse to address this life threatening issue. They are withholding valuable information. I own both volvo s70 and s80 and they have shut down in highway traffic.*this is a direct quote i received from a master volvo mechanic when i posted a question concerning electronic throttle system." your ets light is a little more severe then that this is a very common problem the manufacture knows this and will not stand behind problem . However the problem is the throttle unit, it has a malfunction and needs to be replaced the dealer will probably tell you it needs a download, that is unfortunately only going to fix problem for a short while.".

After first year consumer's vehiclebegan to experience electrical problems. While driving home all power was lost. Dealer has been contacted for problem, but was unable to duplicateproblem. Vehicle currently not being driven. Please provide further details.

Vehicle stalled while driving.the consumer was able to restart the vehicle and pulled over toshut down the vehicle. Consumernoticed that the check engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on.the consumer drove itto the dealer, and themechanic determined that the computer system, and other parts of engine needed to be replaced.

2000 volvo s80 stalling while drivingseveral episodes, all at low speedthe episode below was the last.

On april 21,2011 approximately 7:45am, my vehicle failed in accelerating power suddenly while driving. In addition, my vehicle jerk, skip, and shook uncontrollably. I had my car towed to my personal repair shop (reputable volvo service, inc.) my mechanic informed me after a diagnostic, that the throttle module needs to be replaced. He tells me that only the volvo dealer would be the only repair service to replace this part due to the software program that included. So, once again, the car was towed the authorize volvo dealer. The diagnostic here is the same, the throttle module needs to be replaced. There was a recall on this part, along with other parts. I was not informed about this through the dealer but through research of my own. Theservice manager tells me that i would have to contact volvo manufacturer to see rather they would honor the recall of the replacement of this part. I contact the manufacturer and spoke with mrs. Marilyn and mrs. Jan and i was told that this part was past the warranty but they would honor the software update for this part. Also the engine cooling fan recall is still open but i have already had this part and labor done at my own expense due to the fact that i was not aware of the recalls. The throttle module is about $700.00, this does not include labor or another software program. For my total repair cost is $1185.00 and strongly feel that this is not fair because none of my parts were replaced through the recall. In other words i shouldn't have to pay for a part plus labor that was defective in production. I should be extended the same recall conditions that other volvo owners were able to received. Volvo inc knows exactly what cars received their recall parts replacement and also which cars did not through their vin number. Of course they would extend the software update program because it's less expensive. Please assist me. Thanks

2000 volvo s80 -- defective throttle control modulesubject of preliminary evaluation pe05041on april 20, 2005, while driving using cruise control at highway speeds the car would lose and regain power frequently.on april 21, 2005 while driving at approximately 35 miles per hour on a two lane road without a shoulder the car lost significant power and a variety of warning lights came on with instructions to turn off the engine.was able to restart the car with limited power and took it to the dealer.the problem was diagnosed as a faulty throttle module and replaced at a cost, paid 100% by me, of $919.16.subsequently, the cruise control occassionaly exhibits the same slight loss and resumption of power.while i was lucky in that i was able to turn into a driveway when nearly all power was lost, had there been traffic on the two lane road i was subject to being rearended.the frequency of this failure, which i understand to be the subject of a class action lawsuit in california contending there is a "hidden warranty" practice being conducted by volvo which at times pays for the expense and other times not, is worthy of your official evaluation. Thank you.

While driving my 2000 volvo s80 about 20-25mph all the sudden lost power to all my gauges, dashboard lights, power windows, & power locks. The radio was the only device that was working. The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.when the contact arrived home, she noticed smoke under the hood of the vehicle.flames were present soon after.the fire department arrived and extinguished the fire.everything under the hood was melted.a firefighter stated that it appeared to be an electrical fire.a report was filed.there were no injuries.the contact stated that she will call volvo and file a claim.the failure mileage was 125,300.

2000 s80 volvo t6, has stalled in traffic nine times, including a sudden loss of speed and power steering while driving in highway traffic without warning. I have had car towed to our dealer several times, they keep it for a week, trying to see if the car will stall for them. We are frustrated with the dealer, will it take a death before there is any action. Can you please help us?

Another complaint for the volvo s80 throttle module causing the car to lose all power on the freeway. I was fortunate that each time this occurred, i was in a position to get off the road safely. Surging engine rpm noted on numerous occasions while stopped.seems to be when using air conditionerour safety concern is the possibility of the engine overpowering the brakes. Dealer says it is the electronic throttle module and noted it is an on-going problem with this model car as well as a safety and reliability concern.

I was driving along a busy street, when i came to a stop sign the brakes where hard to push, when i finally stopped the car, you could still fill the car trying to move forward i took my foot ofthe brakes and the car sped up on it's on reaching close to 40 mph again i was barely able to stop the car do to a stiff brake pedal. I put the car in park and shut it off, once i restarted the car it was sputtering and wouldn't idle correctly every time i put the car in gear it would shut off now i'm getting an error message that says service engine system urgent.

I have been having problems with my 2000 volvo s80 hesitating as if it's not getting any gas when first beginning to drive it everyday.i have complained about this problem since purchasing this vehicle but the volvo repair shop have not been able to fix the problem and they say they do not know what the problem is. Also my check engine light, stc light, and abs light keeps coming on.i have also noticed that when these lights come on my car becomes hard to steer sometimes. After checking into this problem i have found that many other volvo s80 's built around the same time as mine are having the same problems.i have complained about my car suspension making weird noises since having this vehicle and the volvo repair shop says they can not find any thing wrong but when enquiring with others who own volvo s80's, built around the same time as mine, many are saying they are having this problem also.the below information asks for an incident date but the problem with my 2000 volvo s80 hesitating and being hard to steer occur often probably over 100 times.

I want to add my documentation about the failure of the throttle module and subsequent lack of appropriate action.the unit in the 2000 volvo s80 failed to bring the car to a complete halt in traffic in december 2004.subsequent repairs to solve the problem were $845.if volvo sent out a notice for etm repair refunds last winter, i did not receive it despite living at the same address as when i purchased the vehicle in dec 1999.i also want to call your attention to the increasing problem with the dstc system as evidence by activity in the chat rooms.our vehicle shows a persistent dstc service message that the dealer claims can not be adequately diagnosed without first replacing the yaw sensor for $668.others with this problem have turned to buying and self installing rebuilt abs units which the nhtsa should be proactively seeking to understand.the cause of the abs unit failure?some claim it is the vibration and pounding from the entirely inadequate front end suspension and wheel system causing the electronic parts to fail.i can attest to the suspension problem having spent $1790 yesterday to replace front bushings, stabilizer links, struts and spring seats on a car with 64k miles.the front struts previously were replace in jan '04 at a cost of $726 when mileage was 40k.i've also had to replace the ball joints several times already.

As i understand it, the electronic throttle module (etm) on my 2000 volvo s80 is in the process of failing. Two years ago, i had my vehicle serviced when it began surging forward when idling, even when i was braking. An etm software upgrade was done at that time and the etm was cleaned. Now, just short of two years later, i am having exactly the same problem again. As i am coming to a stop, my vehicle will suddenly and unexpectedly surge forward, even when my foot is on the brake. I am petrified that i am going to strike the back of another vehicle before i can arrange to get my car in for service. Further, when i put my car in park or use the ac system, my car comes to a near stall and just lurches all over the place. It simply cannot maintain an even idle when in park. Last week, for the first time, i became aware of the november 2006 recall concerning etms. This led me to look at my old service records, since i was having the same frightening problem that i had two years ago. Sure enough, there it was again - "customer states at idle revs up and surges." i have already paid for this repair once. This is an extremely serious matter and my vehicle simply is not safe to drive.

On three occasions (between jan. 2005 and aug. 2005), while driving my 2000 volvo s80 it has cut off on me.the first time i was pulling into a parking spot at a shopping center.while giving the car gas and pulling into the parking spot the car shut off on me.the second time i had coasted probably 20 feet and was going to pull into a driveway and when i gave the car gas it shut down on me.the third time i was stuck in traffic and i was giving it gas to move up a little and the car cut off.i am reporting this because i saw an article related to these occurrences in the greensboro news & record.

Car has shut off 6-8 times while driving.the majority of times have been on the interstate in rush hour.the first few times this happened the car would "surge" and the lights inside would flicker before the reduced performance light came on and the car completely shut down.each time it has taken longer to get the car to start back up.the car would turn over and then immediately choke down. The last incident happened without warning while driving 80 on the interstate at 5:30pm on a weekday. Now, the car will turn over, but will not stay cranked.i have made three payments on this car and have not driven it for two months for fear that i will be killed or stranded.

I would just like to add my concern to the list of individuals who experienced stalling condition with the volvo.we own a 2000 volvo model s-80 t-6.in april of this year we were experiencing stalling conditions with our car at slow speeds mainly after a few miles of driving after the first start of the day.the car was taken to the local dealership for troubleshooting and possible repair.after a week in the shop the vehicle was returned to us and we were advised that they could not duplicate any stalling.since then we haveexperienced a stall condition twice and again it was within the first few miles after the initial start of the day. The car always starts and performs satisfactory afterwards.it was not an everyday occurrence, but does make one uncertain about reliability.

The electronic doors malfunctioned, the fob does not always open the door and at times when closing the driver side door.updated 12/15/06.

I own a volvo s80 and have seen some performance problems similar to those described by http://vexedvolvo.org/.stalling on a highway is one of the biggest problems although my stalls usually don''t cause the car to totally stop.i recently contacted volvo since i feel that this type of situation is unsafe.they never responded to my request, which was for a replacement part, that i would pay for, that wouldn't fail over time.i have sent them two emails so far with no results.i am a 9-year volvo owner and because of the problems they have ignored i fee l volvo has given up on trying to make their cars safe and reliable.if i can help with your investigation please let me know.the car has 88000 miles on it.

The vehicle would have small changes in speed over the course of several months the car began to lose power and then stall at speed between 50-75 mph. The car restarted but speed was inconsistent even with cruise control. Dealer was contacted and they advised that is was probably the electronic throttle control module, this was without further inspection of the vehicle. The service work was done and so far the problem has been corrected.

Yr 2000 volvo s80 2.9l. Two safety related complaints follow: 1. Dash board (speedometer, tach, lights, etc), electric windows and door locks, and turn signals just stop working all at the same time!i have to unhook the battery to reset.common problem from looking at internet forums.2. Airbag malfunction light message comes on when the airbag has not deployed. This occurred after the mysterious electrical malfunction described above.the dealer wants a fee to reset and check the airbag function. This is also common from looking at internet forums.i think the dealers should be made to fix these problems free of charge.

My 2000 s80 volvo has a defect with the emission control module it was losing power and idling very bad. Because of thisproblem the cat converter and o2 sensors also miss functioned which cost over $4000 to repair after i got the car back 2 days later the emission message appeared again and the car is not running well.

While traveling at interstate highway speed (65-75 mph), the engine began to surge violently, for no apparent reason.within seconds, the warning indicator illuminated and the message center displayed, "stop safely and restart engine."after pulling onto the shoulder, the engine rpm fluctuated from 400-1000 rpm quickly.similar or more severe events occurred three more times that day.fortunately, no accident occurred as a result of stopping on the shoulder.

Volvo s80nhtsa action number pe05041saw that nhtsa recently opened an inquiry into issue of etm in volvos and wanted to add my car to list of complaints received.i had many incidents of car suddenly killing in rush hour traffic over the course of four or five months. Fortunately i did not have an accident, but only due to extreme defensive driving:avoided rush hour, stayed to outside lanes, was able to coast to shoulder, etc.dealer was aware that etm was issue, but extended warranty refused to cover because error codes did not stay in car computer.once etm was replace earlier this year, car has been working fine.

Vehicle experienced engine surges at idle speed while at stop in intersections forcing sudden brake apllication to avoid collision.following approximately 2 weeks of similar sporadic episodes, all without any message indicators, vehicle would only travel 15 mph.throttle assembly replaced to rectify problem.serious risk of injury barely avoided!should be a recall as therre appear to be numerous defects reported.

Throttle controlcar would surge uncontrollably while i was driving on the highwayit would sometimes stall the car out and i had to pull over to restart the cari went to the dealer to have them install and new throttle body and electronic throttle module.

June 13, 2004:car lost power on i-70 in ohio.time - 10:00 pm; conditions clear.vehicle dropped into "limp home mode" requiring that we drive in the breakdown lane to the nearest exit which was about 8 miles.vehicle speed was about 20 mph max. - a dangerous situation on an interstate at night since both debris, dead animals and highway construction barriers required temporarily leaving the breakdown lane. Neither my wife nor i knew what was happening at the time.we were able to find a motel and had the car towed to the nearest volvo dealership for repairs the next day.car repairs included an etm, throttle body, the main control module (part #8601630), various diagnostic tests and software downloads.time constraints necessitated our returning to connecticut by the next day so we ended up leaving the car and obtaining a rental.the dealership finished the repairs and had the car driven to us a couple of days later.a good part of the repair costs were absorbed by volvo, however we did pay some.the reason for this complaint is concern for my wife's safety.she is the primary driver of this car, using it to commute to/from work on heavily traveled roads.we have since learned that these repairs do not permanently solve this problem.the car now has 95,000 miles on it - about 35, 000 more miles since the original failure.we are aware of volvo's 10 year/200,000 mile warranty on the etm, but volvo needs to find a permanent fix rather than risk my wife's or my safety.

The major problem with volvo's computerized throttle (etm, s80 1999-2001, e.g.) is to describe the symptoms. It's blurry like a stomach disorder if you don't find an exact description. In my case it's like the engine looses power and you can't compensate fast enough by giving more throttle. It's impossible to meet clutch and throttle no matter what. Now, if you take it really slowly so the computer manages to react, it's no problem but if you are the slightest to hasty .... Results: engine stops, sometimes on critical spots and changing of gear like a new driver. I've been on a volvo garage to discuss the matter and i've been treated like an idiot. I know i'm right and they know they're wrong. It's time to put pressure on volvo and make them correct their mistake. If not, in the future, choose another car! i'm saying this although i'm swedish!

My 2000 volvo s80 began giving me error messages of several kinds, one of which tells me "dipped beam bulb failure."when that happens, the low beam headlights do not work (they come on when i start the car as running lights).after buying new bulbsto put in, i found that the old bulbs were not burned out and that the problem occurred at random.the big problem was driving home with the bright lights only - which though seemed differently, are not too awfully bright - only a few people flashed me.i then had other codes coming up and had to replace the "abs controller" to the tune of $1000; and, guess what?the dipped beam bulb failure message still occurs off and on (spending the $1000 did cure the other, multiple messages)

Engine and car completely shut down on 2 occasions (4/13/01 and 7/27/01).mass air flowsensor replaced initial instance and software updaed.ignition nd fuel injection fault tracing.unable to isolate cause second instance.intermittent communication fault at electronic throttle module.unable to duplicate problem.refuse pick-up of the car at royal volvo since very concerned about safety issues.have notified volvo customer services twice, volvo dealership, nhtsa, office of attorney general.thorough letter being sent to nhtsa, center for auto safety, and office of attorney general on 8/6/01.please thoroughly review the content.major concerns----have found at least 6 other instances of the same problem.will send all documentation in the express letter being sent.call if any questions and leave an 800 number for responses.urge you to please take note....this issue is broader than my own.

Car lost all power, shut down during driving, alarm service came on. Car has been repaired twice april 18, april 23 to april 27. Not clear if car is safe to drive.

All electrical power has been shut off to vehicle on 4 different occassions. The first time was while entering a right turn lane at a slow speed. All power equipment failed...no power brakes, no power steering, etc. I was able to restart the engine without difficulty after turning the ignition off (with the transmission in neutral) and starting in a normal fashion. This failure mode and resolution is typical.the second time, i was turning left across a fairly busy intersection. Fortunately, i had enough momentum to continue without being hit by oncoming traffic. The third time was in an enclosed parking lot as i made a slow right turn to go up a ramp. The fourth time, and this one was unusual, i was travelling about 45 mph when all the failure lights came on for about 1 sec. Fortunately, the power came on by itself. Imagine the consequences of a total electrical failure at 40+ mph in traffic...no power to the brakes or steering.ts

Vehicle shuts down while driving andengine check light illuminates. Volvo has been contacted.

While driving approximately 20 mph andturning right car ompletely shut down.was able to pull over, placeed car in park and restarted.

In oct 04, we purchased a volvo 2000 s80, [xxx].we were satisfied with the performance of the car for the most part.shortly after we purchased the volvo, the check engine light came on, and after having the codes check, the oxygen sensor needed to be replaced.since the car was running smooth and w/agreement of my mechanic, i did not have the os replaced.in march 2006, another msg came on the msg ctr, urgent transmission service req'd.after having the problem check out, i was told the transmission needed to be completely overhauled. My transmission overhaul cost $1300. The problems with the transmission, according to transmission technician, was with the overdrive clutch hub and two shift solenoids were defective.after the repair the car was running great. Another problem came up on the msg ctr, stating urgent engine service req'd. We had driven less than the 100 mi when another msg appeared. After checking w/my mechanic and another owner of a 2000 s80 volvo, who had experienced the same problem, it was determined we had a problem with the etm (elect throttle mod), which was a known issue with volvo.l. After more investigating, i found out that the warranty on the etm had been extended to 200,000 miles, my car had a little over 125,000 miles. I scheduled my car for repair at my local volvo dealership, tim marburger volvo of bristol, tn, for repair under a warranty problem.my car was repaired/upgraded to fix the issue with the etm.my volvo is currently running much better than it's run since we purchased the vehicle.once the msg came on regarding the engine needing service, the performance was marginal at best, fortunately we were not in a situation that could have caused an accident, that his happen in traffic, who knows what might have happened.it seems that volvo knows they have problems with the etm, why haven't they done something to notify their volvo owner of this problem???this is provided for your info/action.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.while driving 35 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle.the vehicle burst into flames.the insurance agency and volvo investigators determined that the cause of failure was due to a short in the wire harness.the vehicle was destroyed.the current and failure mileages were 40,000.

Subject:engine compartment fire, result:total loss,ehicle:2000, volvo, s80 2.9,vin:[xxx]. Shortly before 3:00pm my wife and i departed bridgeport, connecticut for the trip home to massachusetts.the first 7 or 8 minutes were local stop and go driving (maximum speed 25mph).at this point we entered the merritt parkway (eastbound entrance 48).we joined the right lane traffic flow, which varied between 55 and 60 mph.approximately 2 minutes later ? just before the merritt parkway eastbound entrance 49 or 50 the car engine lost power.i was able to coast the vehicle off the highway to the island between the highway and the on-ramp.it looked like steam was coming out from under the hood near the radiator.i look at the dashboard temperature gauge and was surprised to see it reading normal.i pulled the hood release lever inside the vehicle, got out of the vehicle, went to the front of the vehicle and attempted to release the hood safety latch which was so hot that my hand withdrew involuntarily.at this point i became aware that smoke was coming out from the front of the hood, not steam.i alerted my wife to get out of the car.she did, and after moving away from the vehicle, looked back and noticed flames coming out from under the front of the engine compartment.my wife and i witnessed two explosions, eminating from the engine compartment.the first explosion caught my attention because it was loud and shot flame and smoke about 15 feet into the air. 2000 volvo s80 t6on numerous occasions the vehicle would stall, even when driving at highway speeds.on several occasions while driving my children to school on the highway the vehicle stalled forcing me to cross 3-4 lanes of heavy traffic without the use of power steering or power brakes.the electronic throttle module was determined to be defective.this is a known defective part on 1999-2001 volvo s80's.there are even documented reports that the etm will fail on over 90% of all volvo s80's within this year range ('99-01). I have spent $900 to have this replaced. The state of california is filing a lawsuit against volvo over this part.i live in ky; therefore i don't believe that lawsuit will help me.i am asking volvo for full reimbursement to replace this part.it not only was a faulty design, but also potentially deadly part. There should have been a full recall on this part and volvo knew about this problem even before the release of the vehicle in '99.there is another know defective part on the same year volvo that is the abs module.i had to have that replaced for a cost of $1000. Documented reports say the abs module will fail on 60% of those volvos.

2000 s80 volvo electronic throttle body, car stalling of the freeway with children in car.volvo malufactor defected part and they continue to charge their customer for parts and maintenance of this defected part.

While stopping or turning at low speeds the cars idle speed will fluctuate from a complete stop up to 1100 rpms. Most of the time between 500 & 1100 rpms ! when the car stops running while i am trying to turn a corner , the power steering of coarse does not work and its hard to steer it. I did take it to a volvo dealer, &they said it needed a new throttle sensor & computer software change, & it would cost me $2400. I can't find out if any of the recalls have ever been done #r155, r146, nhtsa i.d. #626114 & i.d. #10018801.the previous owner had the car for three years & did not receive and recalls notices. Most of the time the car runs fine, i have driven it over 40,000 miles now with the check eng. Light on & off. The check engine light will stay on for a day or too & go off for three or four days at a time. I would really like to know if any of the recalls have ever been done to this car.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The contact indicated that the defect had occurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the problem. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 85,000.

As i was driving i heard a bang and saw smoke coming from underneath and behind the passenger seat and quickly fire spreading throughout the back of the vehicle. The rear window blew out.the car would not stop as i drove the vehicle off the street.i had to throw myself out of the vehicle.the entire vehicle was inflamed and exploded.

Paperwork was completed, i was on my way out, the salesman said, "make sure you put some oil in the engine, it has no oil, we didn't have a chance to inspect the car." he went on to say, "bring it in sometime next week and we'll inspect it."car was brought in following week, they had no time to inspect it. It went on for three weeks. The engine temperature would rise very quickly, i pulled over and turned off the car. This happened five times. It was brought to a separate car repair shop and they concluded that the cars ecm (electronic computer module) isn't working correctly. None of the gauges are correct, including the gas and engine temperature gauge. They said that the engine could be overheating and it wouldn't show up on the computer, or it might not be overheating and it might show up as overheating. Then the dealer did their inspection and said that the car was "fine." i asked for diagnostic results and they said that they have no way of printing their diagnostic results. Later, the car started saying "high engine temp" again. I arrived at the dealership and told them the problem. One of the sales men took the car on a test drive. On the freeway, the car was doing just fine. Once the car was going about 35mph it started signaling overheating. Back at the dealership the salesman left the car running while the car was stating in the dash "high engine temp." they proceeded to let the car run. The salesman shut off the vehicle, opened the hood and smoke was rising out of everywhere and all the coolant pipes blew and coolant was leaking everywhere. I was in shock. They basically blew up my car. I walked inside and the salesman commented to me, "i did that so he [the dealer] would give you another car."the dealer refused to take the car back. They stated that the only thing that needed to be fixed was a "fan control" because the fan wasn't working properly.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.while driving 35 mph, all of the dashboard warning lights illuminated and the engine completely failed.the contact was able to pull to the side of the road.the vehicle would not restart and was towed to the dealer.the dealer stated that the engine needed to be replaced and that the cause of failure was a failed timing belt tensioner.the current and failure mileages were 97,000.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. While driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle stalled. Upon restart the contact was able to continue driving but the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle would also would not respondwhen pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal. The failures occurred intermittently until the vehicle would not longer start at all. The failure mileage was 130,000 and the current mileage was 136,000.

Since i bought my car from the volvo dealer last winter it has stalled on me at low rpms it also surges forward almost causing me to hit cars in front of me i brought it back to them and the dealers told me its normal because its fuel injected and they wont do anything about it.. This is very dangerous.

This car (2000 volvo s80 turbo) has been in my family since it was brand new.first it was my mother's when it was purchased in 2000.then in the summer of 2005, it became mine.both while my mother owned it, and now while i've owned it there have been a number of problems.the car has never been in an accident of any sort.stalling is the biggest problem.unpredictably the car when decreasing speed will just stall and the car stops.every time this has happened if the car is put into park, turned off, and then turned back on it works fine, however it is very dangerous for something like this to happen.also, twice since i have had it there has been no oil in my car.no lights come up to warn me and thankfully both times i got it checked out before my car over heated.another instance, there was a leak in the automatic steering. Today i went to start my car and a warning message came up saying "low battery voltage" and my car did not feel right when i drove it.i never left any lights on or anything of that matter that would cause a drain in the battery and the battery was just replaced not too long ago.i think that was my breaking point with this car. For a car that is only 5 years old, and is supposed to be that great of a car. Its awful.

My driver seat belt just locked up and i am unable to get it to release. All of the housing inside car appears to be cracking. I have had the two front windows repaired over and over again. And now i can't even let my front windows down. I have also paid to have the throttle body repaired. Not to mention how many times i have had to replace the o2 sensors.

Driving in the city and when trying to stop on a traffic light the brakes became hard and engine was not running well. When i tried to drive off in the green light the speed control of the gas pedal was very chaotic. I got a message of engine system service required. I took the car to the local volvo dealer and he diagnosed a faulty throttle etm asking 2000 $ to replace. After researching i found that there was already a recall on that by volvo and when i asked the dealer he said that this was true but my car was more than 10 years old ( although he could have informed me about that in the first place). He informed me that a software service on the etm of my car was done in 2006 ( after the recall?) but this did not fix the problem as apparently the problem is with the etm design ( faltering potentiometer). This car is very dangerous and it will probably go to the junkyard, but we should be concerned by all volvos remaining on the street with faulty etm's, which the numerous complaints filed at nhtsa show.

Car stalling. I thought that it was just my bad luck- that i had bought a lemon. I purchased my 2000 volvo s80 t6 sedan brand new in december 1999. I have had many, many problems with this car, all of which were covered by warranty.the reason i am writing to you just now is because of what i just read on the internet.my car stalled in traffic last month. I was coming to a stop at a light. The car re-started. The volvo dealer could not find a problem. There has been no stalling since.

Dt: the contact stated the vehicle intermittently stalled/died and lost power due to throttle body failure.

I was traveling on interstate 20 from atlanta, gaheaded to charleston, sc.between augusta, ga and columbia, sc, the car lost power as if someone were applying the brakes while i had my foot on the gas pedal.suddenly, i had a warning light come on that said "performance reduced".i wound up having to locate the local volvo dealer in columbia where i left my car for repair and had to proceed to charleston in a rented vehicle.this happened late in the day on friday and i had to be in charleston for a meeting on saturday morning.the "throttle body control" was deemed to be the problem and the dealer replaced it at a cost of close to $1,000.when i asked what would have happened if i had continued to drive i was told that the car eventually would have lost total power and died.unfortunately, i do not have the part that was replaced. When i read about your investigation, i was outraged that this is obviously a dangerous and fairly common problem.

Dt:the vehicle was a 2000 volvo s80.the vehicle stalled and lost power on three occasions.

Etm (electric throttle module intake manifold) needs to be replaced! (volvo only has a very limited extended warranty issued on 4/2006.the etm was cleaned 3 different times since 8/8/02; and a software upgrade was completed on 10/19/06. My last 2 complaints to my volvo dealership mechanic has resulted in denial on 10/19/06 and refusal to repair under the extended warranty on 8/18/08 due to unretrievable computer codes (volvo admits the problem was still an etm problem).[this has occurred every year for the last 6 years!!!]on several occasions, accidents almost happened because the vehicle either stalls on the freeway at 55-60mph, or vehicle suddenly surges at a red light or stop sign.according to vexedvolvo.com, the real cause is due to a wearing out of the "potentiometer films in the throttle position sensors".a simple etm "cleaning" will not suffice.

2000 s80 volvo electronic throttle body, car stalling of the freeway with children in car.volvo malufactor defected part and they continue to charge their customer for parts and maintenance of this defected part.

Driving on freeway at night, experienced a sudden loss of power.engine check light came on.fortunately coasted to a stop on an exit ramp.upon stopping observed smoke coming through the edges of the hood.turned off the ignition and exited the car.noticed a flame under the engine compartment.within one minute the front end of the car burst into flames and burned in a bright yellow fireball estimated to be 20 feet high.it burned until the fire trucks arrived 20 minutes later.the heat was extremely intense. The hood vaporized, metal parts of the engine melted, tires exploded. Car had a full tank of gas and strongly suspect malfunction of fuel system.had we been trapped in the car on the freeway, there could have been four fatalities.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.when approaching a complete stop, the vehicle lunges forward.secondly, the vehicle would stall while idling and then restart immediately.the engine light would illuminate simultaneously.he took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the exhaust manifold, turbo back field, and torque mount needed to be replaced, as well as perform a tc-b service all at the cost of over $3,320.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were 193,008. Updated 10/07/08.*ljupdated 10/08/08.

Car stallswhile driving, mostly on turns.but a few times on a straight away. We have taken it to the dealesrhip several times and they cannot find anything wrong. Selling the vehicle to correct our problem.

The engine shut down suddenly with loss of power steering and power brakes once while on a ramp entering the expressway and a second time while on the expressway. Each almost caused an accident. I was able to re-start the engine.this happened shortly after buying the car and the etm and maf were replaced then. Several times over the years since there has been a variation of engine speed while driving at high speed. The dealer was never able to identify the problem.i just had this fixed (at a cost of $1,326.68) since it is no longer under warranty.

I get performance reduced messages on my 2000 volvo s80 message console, and the car will slow down almost to a stop.this has happened more than 100 times to me - even at highway speeds.i have to put the hazard lights on, and make my way off of the road on to the shoulder.if i turn the car off, and restart the car, (often several times), the car seems to "reset" and i can often drive on.westside volvo of cleveland, ohio has quoted me between $1,200 and $2,000 to fix this problem, and has told me it is the "etm".my car has 106,000 miles on it.the dealer has told me that the unit was "designed only to last until 100,000" miles, and that only a volvo dealer can replace it - because of computer software that must be encoded on the part.i purchased this car used with 59,000 miles on it, thinking i would get a car that might last me ("volvo - for life..." happens to be the company's marketing slogan).however, i cannot currently afford the repair, and i cannot afford to get another car.i am forced to drive this car and it is unsafe.i have had more than 5 incidents where there was almost a crash - mostly due to this "performance reduced" happening at highway speeds on multiple lane highways in heavy traffic.please do something about this - please help me.thank you.

Driving along down an interstate i hit the gas to drive around a car when my transmission came out of gear and the service engine light came on i lost all power to the wheels and was almost rear ended i had no power to make it to the side of the road it is kicking back in but i can not drive above 20 mph or above 3000 rpm or it will slip out and red line alsomy engine mount has broken for the second time when it slipped out my s 80 t6 is becoming a paper weight.

2000 volvo s80 t6 sedan - car began to jerk as though missing; got progressively worse, even after complete maintenance update.has essentially gone to no power and i'v had to coast to the side of the highway - turn off- wait - restart and then run awhile longer.local mechanic says its a throttle module or my main computer and must be fixed at dealer (220 miles away) because no one else can program the new module when replacing.

Dt:a 2000 volvo s80.the engine stalls/died at 5-7 mph. Thishappened at least three times.each time it happened at low speeds. Has occurred just after starting and when pulling to a stop. Whentakingvehicleto the dealership the first two times they did not tell him what they did to the vehicle.the third time they fixed the air mass meter which controlled the air and fuel mixture.this fixed the problem temporarily. The first time it occurred was on10/112004, the second timeit was on 01/01-205, and most recently it occurredon 7-28-2005.the consumer stated the problem was finally resolved, a new throttle body part was installed.

Consumer states his vehicle stalls while driving at 60mph, happened on november 8, december 15, and 24 dealer hasinspected three times and could not duplicate or correct the problem. Please provide further information. Ts

My 200 volvo s80 stalled intermittently in 2003, so i had the throttle body 2000 cleaned at 48,989 miles when my car was still under warranty.a service on april 19, 2005 showed "no codes" though my car has been stalling periodically again since march of this year in a variety of dangerous settings:pulling up to a crowded curb at my kids' school, attempting to stop at a stop sign in a crowded intersection, driving 40 mph on a busy street, driving around a traffic circle in a mountain town, etc.my car has stalled 10-15 times since march.each time, it was extremely difficult to steer, to brake and attempt to put my car in neutral and restart it when it stalled.almost all of the times it stalled, it created a dangerous situation for me, for other drivers around me and for pedestrians.a visit to the service center today reveals that i need to spend $1,150 to replace the throttle body.i understand that, in time, the new throttle body will have the same problems as the old one.this is an extremely dangerous situation; i try to avoid driving near volvos if possible.

I am having an issue with my brake warning light/engine light. I have not had the car a month.the warning message says brake failure stop immediately.i took back to dealership and they said that i had no fluid.but it is still happening. I noticed the recall on the 2000 volvo s-80.not sure if is the same thing, but if it is should the volvo dealership fix for free. The recall was sent out march of 07.

They stated that the only thing that needed to be fixed was a "fan control" because the fan wasn't working properly.

While driving the vehicle goes into "limp" mode and a error message saying "safely pull over and restart vehicle" goes on.the vehicle wouldn't exceed 5 mph with traffic behind me.it is a potentially dangerous situation, which has happened several times.but i've finally brought the car to the dealership and apparently the electronic throttle body module, and the anti-lock brake module both have to be replaced.then after checking several forums this seems to be an epidemic for the volvo s80.

I own a 2000 volvo s80 2.9 - vin: [xxx].i had purchased the vehicle new from bridgewater volvo in nj on aug 15, 2000.i have 49,100 miles on the car and i have maintained the vehicle impeccably in the last 5 years of ownership.two weeks ago the car started stalling and the message display read "reduced performance".my wife uses the car to commute to work and the stalling of the car on the highways put her into a potentially dangerous situation.she was able to safely pullover and the car would re-start again every time it stalled.she finally got home and after the second day of the problems she left it in the garage and used the second car for commuting.she then took it to the volvo dealer in edison nj.volvo of edison diagnosed the problem and here is the direct qoute from their bill - "performance reduced light fault trace ecm 91a7 and abs 00b1-found internal fault in etm and brake pedal position sensor replace and download etm and brake pedal position sensor"since the car is no longer under warranty i had to pay the following amounts:parts - throttle body, gasket & sensor = $655.42labor - $472.50taxes = $67.68total = $1,195.60i called volvo customer service to complain about the pre-mature failures and their response was there is nothing they can do about it.i also stated that i am dissatisfied with their product quality and i may not consider buying another volvo product.the customer service rep told me that in that case volvo may not even consider reviewing my case as i may not consider buying another volvo.in addition to the above problem last year i had a cooling fan failure which was covered under warranty just before it expired.now i have never ever received a recall notice from volvo on any problems.i understand that there was a recall on the front suspension ball joints and i do not know if volvo during the routine service visits ever applied the recall fix. Car overheats while driving below 15 miles per hour or stopped in warm weather. Indicator lights tell you to turn of the engine. Temperature guage pegged in the red zone. Radiator fluid boils out when you turn of the car. The dealer says it is the same problem that the 1999 s80's (nhtsa campaign id number : 02v096000 ) have. Unfortunatly my car was produced 2 months after the end of the recall.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.the contact stated that she was a beneficiary of a class action settlement regarding a defective throttle module in the engine.the volvo dealer would not repair the failure due to the warranty lawsuit.the lawsuit will expire whenever the vehicle becomes ten years old or reaches 200,000 miles.the failure causes the engine to surge from fast to slow or vice versa.the contact stated that there was no dealer nearby to repair the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they stated that the computer would not diagnose the failure.the vehicle was taken to a repair shop and they determined the cause of the failure.the failure mileage was 108,000.

2000 s80 volvo has defective throttle body according to volvo repair center.this is a know and wide spread defect. It causes the engine to surge sporadically or to die. Volvo has issued a bulletin to all service centers advising them of the defect. Volvo will not replace or correct the problem for those auto out of warranty.

No warning that there was a problem.car died suddenly while driving 20-30 mph. Mass air flow sensor was replaced under warranty.

While driving and no warning the vehicle will stall and it will be hard for the consumer to control the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.whenever the vehicle is at a stop, it will surge forward unless the contact applies a great amount of pressure on the brake pedal.also, while driving at any speed, the engine will suddenly stall and shut off.the vehicle is able to be restarted immediately after the failure.the vehicle has been diagnosed by the dealer several times, but the failure still persists.the current mileage was 50,300 and failure mileage was 44,000.

In early jul 05, i experienced electronic throttle system (ets) problems with my 2000 volvo s80. Particularly concerning to me from a safety standpoint was that several times, including when i was in highway driving situations, the car on its own suddenly accelerated and decelerated, hesitated on acceleration or would not accelerate, and displayed engine stall symptoms.the computer indicated degraded engine performance (limp mode). I lined up a service appointment with lovering volvo of meredith. After lovering's first attempt at repairs, the car was still not operating normally and i took it back to the dealer a second time.i paid a total of $2,074.42 for repairs, $1,741.44 the first time and $332.98 during the second visit.in accordance with a june 2006 volvo letter, i took my s80 back to lovering for inspection and ets software upgrade.i submitted to volvo a claim for reimbursement for ets repairs. The advertising checking bureau (acb), which administers the ets warranty rebate program on behalf of volvo, sent me a check for $747.93 for the ets repairs. Acb said it was authorized to reimburse me only the $587.93 cost of electronic throttle body, electronic throttle module reload, and gasket, and associated $160.00 labor cost. Acb advised me to contact the volvo customer care center.a volvo customer care representative confirmed that acb had done as instructed and suggested that i take up the matter of the remaining repair costs with lovering. The lovering invoices, dated july 26, 2005 and august 8, 2005, indicate that a $295.65 portion of the initial $1,741.44 repair bill had to do with totally unrelated steering/suspension and engine mount repairs. Still questionable in my mind are the oxygen sensor repairs which added up to $897.86 and the subsequent mass air flow sensor repairs which came to $332.98.i suspect the problems are all ets-related and i am currently pursuing the matter with the dealership.

My wife was driving the car and making a left turn across traffic (with plenty of room to make the turn).as she decelerated to make the turn, the car died.as this happened, of course all power steering and brakes were lost.she narrowly avoided an accident, as she was stuck out in the intersection.i have spent some time researching this problem and its causes and i have found ample supporting information that many owners of this vehicle are having this problem of the car dying on deceleration.the problem is apparently due to an electronic throttle module (etm).this is a unique system installed by volvo that does away with the traditional throttle cable.apparently these devices are failing regularly, and must be replaced to the tune of about $1000 cost to the owner of the vehicle.i think that if a normal throttle-cable vehicle had a great tendency to break throttle cables, even on cars with low miles, this would lead to some sort of recall because this leads to an unsafe situation.this was such a near miss for my wife that she is afraid to drive the car until it is repaired.check www.brickboard.com site.this is a site for volvo owners.a search for s80 and etm will generate many hits from owners who have had the same unsafe condition leading to a need to replace this faulty device.

While driving, check engine light illuminated, dealer placed vehicle on diagnostic machine and a code would appear stating the gas cap was not put on tight enough, dealer has had to reset the computer several times due to the light illuminating, consumer states that the light comes on 3 or 4 days after fueling.

There was nothing leading up to the engine stalling out, it just happened all of a sudden. I have had a sudden loss of speed/ power to vehicle in the past and also just recently...along with no ability to steer while driving in highway traffic and then the vehicle will just stall out completely in the middle of traffic, unable to restart until the car feels like cranking up again. I took the vehicle to a volvo repair shop and the mechanic could find a problem but a week later the same thing happened again. The stalling happens sporadically, so you just never know when it will happen next.

The service engine light is on. While driving, it cuts back to the idling speed. The consumer was unable to drive over the idle speed. The consumer was driving the vehicle when it completely shut down. The throttle body was replaced.

While the vehicle was parked andwithout any indication, thevehicle caught on fire from the engine. Manufacturer was contacted, but nothing was done, they claim the cause of the fire couldn't be determined. The engine was severely melted.

Upper engine mount broke, causingcoolant rack to malfunction.

Dt:the contact stated while driving the dashboard lights came on, and then the vehicle stalled.she was unable to restart the vehicle, and it was towed to the dealership, whodeterminedthe engine needed to be replaced.there have been no repairs made to the vehicle.

Dt: contact states owned a 2000 volvo s80, and the vehiclestalled several times. While driving at normal speeds ,slowing down to make a left turnand vehicle stalled the first time.the second time this happened the consumer was driving at normal speeds whenvehicle stalled.a couple of timesthe vehicle would not go into reverse.the vehicle was towed to the local service dealer when this happened.consumer stated saw on television where there had been several cases with volvo models who were havingstalling problems. The vehicle has been to the service dealer on two separate occasions, but the consumer ccould not remember whatrepairs were done.consumer no longer had the vehicle because she did not feel safe driving it.the manufacturer has not been contacted.

While driving at any speed and with no warning vehicle will shut off, causing consumer to pull over.it will be hard to get vehicle to start again. Dealer notified.

The vehicle cuts off when trying to accelerate after stopping.the vehicle has been to the dealer.

Engine constantly surges forward while brakes are applied.at a stoplight, the car will just suddenly lurch forward.on highway, car lost power and acceleration.when i pulled over, the engine cut off.dealership told me to the problem was the electronic throttle, which i replaced for $2100.the car continues to have engine surges.

Car engine suddenly stalled without warning.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.while driving various speeds, the vehicle would spontaneously decelerate.prior to the failure, the engine and brake warning lights illuminated on the instrument control panel.the dealer stated that the abs module needed to be replaced at the cost of $1,500.the vehicle has not been repaired.the manufacturer did not provide any assistance.the failure and current mileages were 107,000. My 2000 volvo s80 t6 stalls (typically in junctions) after 120k maintenance service / recall 155 etm software upgrade. The service was performed on 5/12/06 at authorized volvo dealer (128volvo.com). Since the service, the car stalled 5 times, and has been to the dealership three more times, without a fixing the problem. The dealer rejects my complains and wants this issue to "happen more frequently before taking action". Sudden stalls almost lead me to a traffic accident already at least once; the dealership isn't concerned about traffic safety.

The check engine light continue to come on with a message emmision syustem require inspection .volvo gwinnett place had supposedly repaired it at least three times with the latest being october 2. Only to have the light come on again october 3. We will return the car on october 5th. Mr

Service engine light - urgentwent on. I noticed slight hesitation in car only when this light is on. Service light comes on & off. Went to dealer and informed that i need a new throttle body unit at a cost of $1129.95. Car only has 73,000 miles and is regularly serviced by volvo. Informed that this is not under warranty.went on line to nhtsa and discovered many complaints regarding similar problem.

While driving at approximately 40 mph engine completely shutdown without warning, vehicle very difficult to control with no power to maneuver out of traffic.

Car has has many returns to dealer in first 20,000 miles for mechanical problems. No safety defect listed.

Volvo 2000 s80 t6 - 61000 miles "vent box seals leaking oil".

Consumer states while driving 60 mph the engine shut causing lost of power steering. Mr

(1) no warning prior to failure(2) the engine suddenly stalled, leading to instant loss of power / speed.the very first time it happened to me was 2.5 yrs ago(july, 2003) the day after i bought the car at 62 k miles. The engine stalled when i was driving @40-50 miles/hr for 6 miles.the car was towed to the garage and a throttle was replaced.then, after 2.5 year, when the mileage reached 91k (less than 30k after throttle replacement), the same stalling appeared again.the first time it happened was around 12/10, when i parked the car.the second time was on 12/18, when i pulled over to a traffic lightthe third time was on 12/19, again when i approached parking lot, to take it to the volvo service.(3) in the first day at volvo dealer service (@ 96th st., indianapolis) could not diagnose the problem: no error code was found.in the second day, upon my request, the service personnel drove the car for two or three miles and the car stalled again.i was told that they found the error code, and determined it related to air intake / throttle.i was also told that the repair would be under volvo extended warranty of throttle cleaning, which i was not notified but found through nhtsa website, and made inquiry to the service personnel.today is the third day of car in the garage, and i have not heard any word from volvo dealer.i am afraid any fix i receive today or in the near future is just temporary, as the same problem happened at 62k. Even after new throttle was installed, this problem appeared at 91k.i was also told by the volvo dealer that the previous owner had the same problem.

Shortly after my vehicle's 60k mile service, i noticed slight hesitation while crusing around 60 miles per hour on highway. Once i experience the hesitation, the enginer service light would come on then the "engine system service urgent" message would come on as well. When the hesitation starts, i would feel as if i no longer have the full control of the gas throttle as it does not respond at all. Eg. When i take off my foot off the gas pedal, i would feel a sudden surge in vehicle acceleration! while waiting to get the car serviced by my dealed to take a look at the problem, the warning lights would come and go. Finally, during my trip to get my car serviced, the gas throttle stop responding thus the car cruised to a full stop. I was able to restart the car after about 15 minutes and continue with my journey. Later i was told that i need to replace the whole throttle body in order to fix this problem. My concern is why this problem was not detected during my "major" tuneup service about 3 weeks prior insetad,i had to make a separate trip to the dealership and potentially get into a very dangerous situation while traveling at high speed then to lose the control over the vehicle's gas throttle where it may suddenly accelerate or decelerate.

Over the course of ownership of a 2000 volvo s80 (i.e., four years), i have the transmission overhauled at 67,000 miles;had the throttle replaced when my car choked ( luckily on a side street); had a bar on the sunroof drop off; engine mounts broken; wheel stops broken; and, most recently replaced an abs panel. Not withstanding in any of these incidents is the cooling fan and ball joint replaced due to recall.truly this car has been more expensive than any other known to be driven.every trip to the dealership is easily $1000 plus. At the time of purchase, the research was scant in terms of problems.i have truly been dismayed by volvo's commitment to its product and is design flaws and/or defects.after, the transmission was corrected at the dealership, i went to trade the car in---to purchase another car.the dealership where i purchased the car basically would not give money on its trade.after several thousand dollars later in repairs, i am still fuming over a car that was purchased solely for the "historical" volvo standard and its commitment to safety.

Air intake tube protrudes below the bottom of the engine and comes in contact with high spot in the road.leads to abrasion and failure of drive belt with subsequent destruction of the timing belt and catastrophic failure of the engine.loss of engine power under numerous driving conditions could easily lead to a fatal accident.volvo refuses to acknowledge the problem, rectify it or reimburse customers.volvo has redesigned on later models without admission of guilt.

The vehicle sporadically surge/hesitate and stalls at low revs. This started maybe about half a year ago and has gotten worse with the problems even at high revs. The problem culminated on may 17th 2009 or there about when i nearly got into an accident. I was traveling on the middle at about 60 mph and there was a slower vehicle in front of me. I accelerated to try to pass the vehicle on the fast lane. The vehicle did pick up and all of a sudden went on a limp mode even i stepped on the accelerator. My vehicle was almost just side by side to the slower vehicle when this happened. The next thing i heard was a loud continuous horning and screeching of brakes of a car behind me on the fast lane..the vehicle is well maintained and perform service well above as what manufacturer recommended. Based on various info. Sources, the problem is almost identical to car that has an electronic throttle module problem.

Dt: while driving consumer noticed every time took foot off the gas pedal and carstalled.the car would shut down completely sometimes. There was still electrical power in the car. There was no power steering or power brakes when it stalled. The car would start back up right away. The check engine light illuminated. There was a code showing when the car started. The car was taken to the dealership, who advised that there was a problem with the air mass sensor. This sensor was replaced. On april 18 2004 while owner's wife was traveling and trying to pass someone the car shut down completely. There was a check engine light that said something like "check engine emergency." there was no power steering or power brakes. Then the wife had just enough power to pull off to the side of the road and a tow truck brought the car to dealership. The car would not turn back on .

Mass air flow sensor on my 2000 volvo s-80 failed as i was about to pass another car.aborted passing attempt and went back behind other car.this was the third time maf failed and therefore i had this one replaced, yet again.once stopped car was undrivable; again: third time this happened.i am on my third maf.

Dt:caller saw volvo investigation on tv. Caller had the problem fixed twice, once in december 2004 and once in june. Replaced mass air flow sensor.

Dt*: the contact stated the headlights, brake lights, turn signal lights and reverse lights have failed on 30 seperate occassions. The bulb light failure indicator has worked in each case. The dealer agreed there was a problem, but had no solution.

There is an overall problem with the s80 cars. I have been to the dealer on many occasions for other repairs such as the roof top cover, brake lights...because of the ball joints and the on and off huming noise, i am uncomfortable driving the car beyond the area. The dealer and the manufacturer were contacted. We only requested the otpions of either cancelling the lease or another car since mine is a lemon...i was not successful which made me wonder if this is a serious issue and others are coming forward.i felt the need to highlight this to the ntsb to follow-up with the manufacturer and get data accross the country.

Dt*: the contact stated the headlights, brake lights, turn signal lights and reverse lights have failed on 30 seperate occassions. The bulb light failure indicator has worked in each case. The dealer agreed there was a problem, but had no solution.

Right turn signal failure. Found r/f signal light bulb blown, melted housing of corner lamp. There was a burning smell. Car was repaired at volvo repair shop under warranty.

Last month i entered my garage to an extreme smell of gasoline.i drove the car to a service shop and they found a cracked fuel pump, which i had replaced.last week, i received a recall letter for my wife's 2004 volvo xc70, describing the exact problem i experienced on my 2000 s80.in this letter, they were also recalling 2001-2004 s80s for this problem.i sent this letter along with the bill for the fuel pump on my 2000 s80 to volvo and asked them to reimburse me.they denied.i telephoned them and asked them to reconsider, as the 2000 s80 was the first year of that model and the problem they were describing in their recall of years 2001-2004 was identical to the problem i experienced.my wife's 2004 car, which they did recall, also had this problem.both cars, leaking gas fumes in our garage, with the gas hot water tank in the garage...very dangerous.my call to discuss this resulted in another denial.the mechanic told me the fuel pump had a plastic top that cracked.he did not believe a 2000 volvo with 79000 miles should have had this problem with the fuel pump.i believe volvo should reimburse me for the charges and i certainly believe the 2000 s80 should be included in the recallthis is a danger.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. The contact noticed a fuel odor near the rear seat of the vehicle and the fuel gauge indicator drastically decreased. The contact discovered an excessive amount of fuel leaking on the ground near the rear side of the vehicle under the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump flange was cracked. The manufacturer stated that the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.update 01/15/16 maupdated 02/04/16. Updated 03/04/16*ljupdated 03/14/16.

At the end of june of 2008 i noticed that my 2000 volvo s-80 smelled of gas. Subsequently, on 06/20/2008 abby car care (559-438-7181) mechanic kevin determined, per my receipt, that 'diagnose fuel leak-fuel leaking from the top tank found defective at flange for evap system leaking were it attaches to top of the fuel tank not repairable.' i was also advised by kevin that the leak was not caused by wear and tear but was 'defective / not repairable' in nature. Abby car care replaced the fuel tank. After learning of this leak and doing some research on the internet 'goggle search engine', it appears that other volvo owners have experienced similar problems with leaks to the gas tanks. I did call my local volvo dealer (fresno lincoln mercury volvo ' 5200 n. Blackstone avenue fresno, ca 93710 telephone number 559-226-5175) and advised them of my leaky gas tank and they advised me that there was no recall and didn't seem to concerned with my problem other than giving me there customer service toll free number.

On winding downhill road (1500 ft. Drop in 2 miles) car went from 45 to non-optional 20 mph due to failure throttle body. Part know to suddenly fail was subject of lawsuit about 2005 which settled in limited time free replacement now expired. Should have been a recall as now permits safety issue to continue indefinitely in automobile type/model typically driven decades.note: car when slowed backed up downhill traffic on the decent is the major cause fatal and other accidents in the area, and set stage for out-of-control slowing accidents. Alternative of pulling off and requesting tow at least as equally hazardous.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, she began to smell an odor of fuel inside the vehicle. The vehicle was stopped and the contact noticed that fuel was leaking through cracks in the fuel pump, traveling up to the front passenger seat. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also stated that there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump) that may be related to the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

Within the past few days, i've gotten many complaints about the foul smell of gasoline lingering on my vehicle. Sure enough, i take it to a mechanic and the fuel pump is visibly moist on the exterior from an obvious fuel leakage. I researched "volvo s80 fuel pump" and found a recall is in place. The recall starts from 2001 models and ranges up to 2005 models and is due to the material used in the fuel pump (recall campaign 09v-483). Since my vehicle is a 2000 model, my local volvo dealership said "i do not meet the qualifications". My concern is if the material used in the assembly of the fuel pump changed from s80 2000 to 2001 models. I would like to be notified what material was used for s80 2000 models versus the material used for s80 2001 models and make sure that the material for s80 2000 models "may not develop cracks due to exposure to certain environmental conditions and varying fuel quality" as does the s80 2001 material. Thank you very much.

I purchased a 2000 volvo s80 in december 2010 and soon after i noticed that there is a strong gas smell coming from the rear passenger side.you can smell gas all around the car.the fumes are also inside the car and if you are in the car for a long period of time you do not feel well later.this problem may have been happening for a long time but i have not spoken with the previous owner.this is the same fuel pump assembly leak that was recalled on the same car from 2001-2004.i have a 2000 volvo s80.

Vehicle would shut down at highway speeds this happened twice on 1-95 in south florida causing near accidents.second time while in the middle highway lane i called for a tow.before the tow arrived the car started up just fine as if there was no problem.this incident happened an additional 2x before i could getthe car to volvo/palm beach, fl where they replaced the etm electronic throttle module at a cost of $1259.00..

Several occurrences of vehicle stalling in traffic, restarting, but not staying started. Vehicle surging at idle. After taken to shop (towed), we now have had our fourth electronic throttle body replaced in last 28 months. The dealership has also replaced the maf sensor and has cleaned the throttle on two occasions. My portion of repairs have already exceeded $2,770. Dealership has acknowledged this is a known problem. They continue to "fix" the problem with the same replacement part.

I operate a 2000 volvo s-80. It has 70,000 miles. Recently it has uneven engine idle problem especially when a/c is on. For two occasions, the car was stranded on the freeway because the engine suddenly stopped. The car was inspected by the local garage, the throttle assembly was cleaned, but the mechanic gave no guarantee because he said the computer which controls the throttle may have the problem and he has no replacement parts. Two weeks later, i received a notice from the volvo stating my car might have the ets (electronic throttle system) problem and they offer the refund of repair cost.i submitted my refund request three weeks ago but received no response.currently the car still has the same problem.

I purchased a used 2000 volvo s80 today.previous owner purchased car in 2002 and had all factory service done up to the 75000 check up (car has 85000 miles now).car manifests all symptoms covered by nhtsa action number :pe05041.surges and if you don't hold the brake hard at stop, car will lurch forward into traffic.while cruising, car surges forward and if you're not careful, the surging will cause the car to get out of control.called the nearest dealer in jacksonville.theyindicate that etm may need replacing ($1200) but my cars 10 year warranty in pe05041 expired in may. Car had problems before and dealer downloaded software but problem not corrected and etm was never mentioned to be replaced.is there a way for me to be covered under the pe05041 warranty since prior dealer never took care of this and now my local dealer says it is just past the 10 year mark? my phone number is [xxx] and email is [xxx] .information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

On may 9, 2005 my husband and i were traveling north on the new jersey turnpike near east rutherford, nj when our 2000 volvo s80 sedan lost acceleration.as the vehicle slowed from 60 mph in traffic to 15 mph, the message window read, "performance reduced."as my husband negotiated the failing vehicle from the center lane, surrounded by 60 mph traffic, to the shoulder, i phoned our volvo dealership in pa for roadside assistance.they informed me to get the vehicle off the road and to take it to the nearest volvo dealership.as we inched along the shoulder at 15 mph, a nj state trooper spotted us and recognized that we were in trouble.he pulled along side us and then offered to follow us, with lights flashing, into the nearest rest area, which was 8 miles north.as he said, "you're a sitting duck."once at the service area, the vehicle would not restart, and we had it towed to kundert volvo in hasbrouck heights, nj.all in all, we were fortunate under the circumstances.it was 10:30 am on a clear spring day.the state trooper's assistance was fortuitous and our car service was completed by 4 pm.at kundert volvo, the service area replaced the throttle body, a gasket and performed an etm reload.total labor and parts was $729.00 plus $150 towing charge.although all is well that ends well, there was great potential for a serious accident during our time unassisted on the nj turnpike, caused by vehicle failure.

The electronic throttle control failed during a left turn to a freeway on-ramp. The car stopped and would not start. I was lucky it was pouring rain and traffic was light because i was in the middle of the road for about 1/2 hour. It was towed to the dealer and the module replaced for approximately $800. The following year the secondmodule exhibited the same symptoms. I drove it to the dealer and had it cleaned for approximately $200. I was told that the module had to be cleaned every year - which i would have to pay for - or it would fail and have to be replaced. I was told this happened to all volvos which predominately were driven in city traffic. I am about due to have the problem this year.

Vehicle has the smell of fuel. The 2001-2005 models have a recall for this same issue because of the plastic on the fuel pump flange cracking. Many owners of the 2000 models are reporting this issue. The fuel pump is the same used on the 2000 year model as the 2001-2005 so the 2000 should be part of the recall also. The smell of fuel is not just unpleasant but dangerous. I have a 11 month old son who rides in my car and it would be tragic if something happened to my family or someone else. You can search google and see many other owners reporting issues in the 2000 model volvo s80. Please do something about this. Thank you!

My 2000 volvo s80 t6 etm they said they would not fix it unless i bought a cem they said car wouldn't work without it. So they fixed it to a tune of $900.00 for cem so i charged it back on my credit card because it's all covered on etm update. In the morning the car still revs more i want volvo to buy this car back from me because no one informed me of this problems. They wouldn't give me old cem i asked.

Loss of power - the electronic throttle control module failed.i had just left home and was still in my sub-division.my auto came to a stop, was still running but had no power.i turned the motor off and then restarted it.problem was resolved but i am concerned when & where it might happen again.

3 independent issues:throttle module - vehiclesuddenly and unpredictably surges forward, particularly during idle or low speeds while in forward or reverse either stopped or moving, causing potential safety problems.transmission module - vehicle suddenly and unpredictably looses power, presenting the driving performance of a "slipping" transmission, causing unpredictable responsiveness to changing traffic conditions, and potential safety problems.front suspension - "knocking" noise from front suspension component(s), causing lack of driving confidence and concerns of driving safety and performance. All 3 of these problems are widely reported as chronic design, performance, safety and reliability issues for the same model years by other volvo owners. In newer model years, volvo has made manufacturing changes to address these recognized issues, but has not as yet successfully addressed and responded to these safety issues. Further, these issues have been reported to nhtsa by other volvo owners.

In july i was traveling in traffic at idle speed when my car started to surge then stalled. I was able to restart it, however i had to keep one foot on the gas and the other on the brake to keep it running. I was able to limp it home using this method to keep the rpms up. When thecodes were read it said the 4 oxygen sensors were out of range. I tuned up the car, cleaned the throttle body and oxygen sensors and reset thecodes. (65,000 miles) after this the car seemed alright until around 79,000 miles.my wife andi were on rte. 1a on the maine coast in traffic . While going around a sharp curve the car stalled. I lost control of my steering and brakes and the car nearly went over the cliff into the ocean. I was able to get it under control and the car restarted with the idle surging. I limped the car home using the gas and brake method. At intersections if i let the car idle the car would surge forward then stall. My mechanic read the codes and told me the map sensor and o2 sensors were bad and replaced them. This seemed to work for a while, however the car reverted back to the same problems. I finally called gallo volvo who had serviced my car under warranty until 60,000 miles and the service manager told me that this was a known problem covered under a hidden recall. Once a customer complained they could fix it. I brought my car to them and they reprogrammed the computer to "repair" the problem. My car no longer stalls, however it surges and hesitates upon acceleration nearly causing people to hit me in traffic. I am still trying to resolve this problem after over $1800 dollars in expenses, multiple near accidents and numerous hours of my time.

(1)car stalled in traffic four times over three months. Power steering/brakes failed.(2) car stalled and would not maintain idle in drive-limped home to dealer 30 miles away. Car would start and run if rpm were over 1500. Lower than that would result in stall...and restart to get home. (3) parts required were map sensor, throttle body, etm reload.

While driving, check engine light illuminated, dealer placed vehicle on diagnostic machine and a code would appear stating the gas cap was not put on tight enough, dealer has had to reset the computer several times due to the light illuminating, consumer states that the light comes on 3 or 4 days after fueling.

The gas filler was pushed into the body of the car. It is not anchored by anything other than the rubber flange at the fender level( just under). When pushed thru ashappened it could cause the tank contents to empty and burn or explode. This is a very unsafe setup on an otherwise safe vehicle. Dealer was put on record.

This car been parked since mid may 2012 with 2 problems, cvvt & inlet hoses. I had the battery charged & the inlet hose fix, so it could go into the shop for inspection.aug.13 i put the plates on it & drove it for the 1st time at night to drop it off at theshop for inspection. Which i had spoken with 2 days earlier.. The morning of aug 14, i call the shop and was informed my car had a fuel pump leak. I than call the volvo corp. Cause it had issue a recall for the fuel pump. Just to be told it wasn't on my car & i'm responsible for the repair.. This car gaveno warning or smell of gas about a defected fuel pump. This wasn't around the corner drive for me.it a blessing cause this could've been bad...as a woman i like to know, how it went bad just sitting there?..

2000 volvo s80 t6, 152,000 miles, maintained regularly. Driving in snowy weather; vehicle had been parked earlier in the day and been driving fine. At 40 miles per hour, the left rear brake locked up the wheel and remained stuck. Abs and traction control lights came on and systems came disabled. Lock-up was the result of a parking brake shoe separating from its backing, similar to http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=97350 .*cw

My 2000 s80 volvo has a defective throttle body and causes my car to completely shut off.

2000 volvo s80.transmission failure with only 109,000 miles. I have always done the required maintenance and service on the vehicle, which included a transmission flush in 2003. I had no prior warnings, no slipping, nothing.the transmission fluid is clean, at the level it is supposed to be at, no leaks, and no warning "check engine" or "transmission" lights came on.my mechanic said that due to the sudden failure with no warning, it is most likely something internal that just broke and that i have to get a new transmission.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. While driving approximately between 25-30 mph on an incline.the "transmission" and "engine" warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel.then the vehicle unexpectedly lurched forward.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic.the technician stated the transmission required replacement.the vehicle was in the process of being repaired.the failure and current mileages were 123,000.the vin was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly surged forward lightly. The failure continued intermittently at any speed. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. A mechanic at a local repair shop also verified that the transmission needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 122,500 and the current mileage was approximately 130,000.

I have a 2000 volvo s80 with less than 40k miles and the transmission has gone out.out of warranty... So i'm out $1,500 for repairs!the local volvo dealer wanted $4,000 for a new transmission.

2000 volvo, s80very bad car, complaints never fixed by dealerhardly runs--this car is a lemon-pages required to list all problemsauto transmission broke at 51,1000 miles, one month after dealer said all was okay.this model a real lemon--the worst running car i ever owned.other problems; front bumper fell off when car had 1200 miles.defective battery cable linkage caused intermintent stalling, motor does not run smooth and surges at low speeds. Poor winshield wipers that dealer can seem to fix.interior controls break often, light bulbs are constantly going out--every light replaced at least once.automatic transmission replaced "under warrenty" at 51,200--but must have been replaced with a rebuilt or used transmission--as it is very much louder and 'wines' when shifting--very loud.car not worth the $36,250 that i would have paid new--luckly i am just leasing and it is finished this september. Also strange things in the electrical system, doors that won't open or lock by themselves. Abs brake light constantly going on.car is a lemon with many design flaws, and dealer is powerless or refuses to fix, despite the fact that i took it in for service regularily to the same dealer.this is the second volvo from same dealer, other was a 240dl (1988), a wonderful car.i will never buy or lease another volvo--please warn others.

When full throttle is applied to the vehicle in a stationary position, the call pulls badly to the right.consumer has been told that this is torque steer problem, which could be potentially dangerous, the front wheel drive train is unable to evenly distribute the power produced by the turbo system.*yd

Shudder in transmission between 1 & 2 gears on automatic 2000 volvo s80 t6.failure of shift solenoid a was experienced.

The vehicle shudders horribly when upshifting from 1st to 2nd gear.

Last year my s80 volvo stalled on the highway due to an etm defect. Two days, i experienced another serious safety issue with the volvo. I was driving the car on a busy street. Suddenly, an electronic message came up indicating a problem with the air bag. Then two seconds later, a 'check engine message' came up. Within another minute another message indicated 'transmission service required urgently'. Then within two minutes the car went to a limp mode. They were cars behind me. It was a miracle that we were not involved in an accident. I searched the internet and found out that many people have experienced similar problems. I found many complaints online related to volvo sudden transmission failure. Some were even involved in accidents when their cars suddenly stopped.i am wondering whether the government had looked at this serious safety hazard.volvo must be aware of the defect. I am very concerned that no one holds them accountable and that no recall has been made thus far to address this issue. I had the car towed to the nearest volvo garage. I was told that the transmission needs to be replaced. It will cost$5000 to fix the car. I called volvo north america to report the problem. They did not help.

Car had salvage title 2+ years ago from minor accident which prematurely deployed air bags, repairedand returned to service.i am retired ase master mechanic, service manager, and sae member, this is not a transmission issue but caused by the erratic actions of the throttle body system and module.transmission passes all conventional tests.results stuck in gear can be corrected by cycling the ignition switch off and back on.this can be done by pulling to the side of the road and stopping to cycle the key or traffic permitting placing in neutral and restarting and then back to drive.no observed failures above 65 mph.tsb send wrong signals to "network" are translated as instructions resulting in poor fuel consumption, high emissions, abnormal wear and tear on transmission, ignition switch, starter, and related components for normal operation, plus a dangerous driving condition.

Since buying my 2000 volvo s80 t6in 2001 i've been puzzled by an occasional noise coming from the front of the car and would mention it to the pat patterson volvo, memphis, tn service writer.he would pass my comments on to the mechanics but nothing was ever found. On saturday 8/5/2006 i made a trip in the mountains of central arkansas during which i drove on a rough, gravel road.after a little over a mile i heard a noise something like that caused when there is a flat tire.i was fortunate in finding a mechanic to look at the car.he was able to get me on my way and i thus was not stranded on a weekend a hundred miles from home. Mystery of the long time noise solved!the problem was a bolt loose on the right front hub.the mechanic stated the bolt had been loose for a long time and theorized that driving on the rough road had caused it to finally come all the way out.the reason the bolt came loose, he said, was that lock-tight wasn't applied by the factory.the local mechanic removed the bolt on saturday but didn't have a replacement so i took it back to pat patterson volvo (ppv) yesterday.the lack of lock-tight having been used by the factory was confirmed.

Own a 2000 volvo s80, i began to experience an uneven ideling when driving either low or high speed, whether on cruise control or not.the car idle goes out of control, it feels as if the car goes on limp mode, i'm then compelled to accelerate to compensate and regain speed.i had the car checked, had the vehicle speed sensor replaced, complete tune up, but the problem remains.i did my research on the web only to find out that this problem is part of a recall from volvo.i took the car to a volvo dealer (volvo oflos angeles) with the recall documentation, they kept the car for a week, then i was told that volvo does not repair the problem unless the computer code show up in their system, even though the symptoms of the car are clearly depicted in the nhtsa action #ea05021.driving this car is unnerving, as i do not know whether it would respond in time, when i have to gain speed on the freeway.the car failure is occurring more often, getting worse as i drive, sometimes i do not know if the car will respond as step on the gas to proceed after a red traffic light turns green.i'm disappointed with volvo for not addressing the issue.

The right front seatbelt retractor locks unexpetdly.this can happen going over a bump, around a corner or on level road. When this happems it usually will not release requiring the seatbelt to be removed, allowed to retract and refastened in order to allow the normal slack and play associated with modern seat belt systems.volvo has replaced the seatbelt once but this did not resolvr the problem.in a call today to volvo customer service i was told that the dealer would have to adress this issue and the company could not.the dealer already tried but failed.

Consumer states that the head rest are too high in vehicle. They obstruct rear vision.dealer refuses to make any modifications. Please provide any further information. Mr

Head restraint in front seats are not removable andare much too high blocking the driver from looking at his left blind spot, i think this isasafety hazard and warranatsarecallfor newhead restraints tobe fitted that areable togo up or down or smaller ones to be fitted.

I want to make you aware of a very serious car accident that my mother had on 9-5-18. She was driving her 2000 volvo s80 when her car began to accelerate on its own. She was not able to control the car. My mom had her foot on the brake but that did not stop the vehicle. Unfortunately, at that point the car was out of control hitting and banging up all the cars around it. Then the car finally smashed into another car stopping the out of control car. My mom was seriously hurt and taken to the hospital. She had emergency surgery to repair her aorta that tore from the crash. She also broke her sternum. I am devastated by what happened to my mom. I feel that it is extremely important that you and volvo are made aware of this tragic situation that occurred by this volvo s80.

2000 volvo s80 2.9l had abs module failed twice at 25k miles (2006) and 50k (8/2008) miles.gotten close to accidents especially during rain, snow, or humid weather.complained to authorized dealer/mechanic at least over the last 4 years without any help until it requires repair.

The vehicle experienced problem with the brake system.the dealer stated nothing was wrong with the brakes . Please provide any addition information.*nlm

In october 2001 while driving at night headlights went off. The following day whilecrossing the streetthe car stalled. Approximately ten minutes laterwas able to start the car, andat the same time headlights cameon.car was under warranty, and the mechanic repaired the throttle body & gasket.in june 2004 car stalled again. Replaced sway links and program down load $338.19. In december2004, car staled on the road again. It was towed to the repair shop, they replaced the throttle body, mass air flow, mfi module- at cost of 2098.96.the contactdidnot take this car on any longer trip.duetostalling on the road, frequent loss of headlights and numerous other mechanical problems the contactbelieved this car was unsafe to be on the road.11-16 e-mail ; first time the car would not respond to the accelerator pedal. Stopped turn the car off and tried to restart it again. After few attemptsthe contact was able to restart the car.the right door mirror failed and the abs control module was replaced. Updated 02/07/06.

While driving 50 mphbrakes failed without warning, resulting in acollision.

I purchased a 2000 volvo s80 in dec 2010.several months after purchase i noticed a hissing sound coming from under the dash near the fire wall.the sound is coming from the brake booster.this has caused weak brakes.sometimes when you push the brake pedal it goes to the floor and the brakes have to be pumped to stop the car.

My wife left for work & got to the end of the driveway & had no brake assist ie very hard pedal. This occurred without warning(no warning lights, etc).she parked the vehicle&took another to get to work(rn).i later drove the car, brakes worked fine. The next day i drove it again & no power brakes.

I was driving my 2000 volvo s80 on 5/19/10 and had exited i-405, onto hwy 169, heading home towards maple valley, when all of a sudden i heard a very loud bang, resulting in sudden steering loss, heard loud squealing, and saw lots of white smoke. The smoke was from the front passenger tire, which had turned outward, completely sideways at a 90 degree angle.the car is now in no condition to be driven. The wheel damaged the frame, warp/dented the quarter panel, broke off the molding, ripped out the cv drive or whatever that thing is that makes the wheel turn in a normal, forward direction, broke the lower control arm, messed up the brake line, struts, and who knows what else? i'm guessing that the repair costs are going to be towards the thousands, being that volvo parts are so expensive.

Updated 09/23/08.*ljupdated 09/24/08.

The abs control module functions intermittently and is usually in the failure mode.abs brakes do not function properly.a new module is required at a quoted price of $950 from volvo dealer.this is a continuous and ongoing problem.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.the contact stated that the trans signal (alert to the abs and speed sensor) would alter the abs and all of the instrument panel lights would illuminate.he had not noticed any performance issues with the vehicle due to the failure.he took the vehicle to a repair shop for diagnostic testing.the results produced six codes and indicated that the speed sensor was also a part of the failure.the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 06v441000.the current mileage was 122,944 and failure mileage was approximately 122,000.

While backing after the car has been sitting for awhile (cold engine), the brakes fail to stop the car for several seconds (feet).

A hissing sound coming from the brake pedal area began occuring and i took to the car to the dealer and was informed that it was a defective "brake booster" and that it is a very dangerous situation that if not corrected could lead to total brake failure. The car is used twice a week and the brake booster has not been replaced and is available for inspection.

Consumer states while driving 60 mph the engine shut causing lost of power steering. Mr

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.while driving approximately 80 mph the steering wheel became stiff. The vehicle was driven onto the emergency lane but would not shut off.within a few minutesthe steering wheel began to function normally. The failure occurred three times and was taken to an authorized dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure and current mileages were 114,000.

Steering wheel is not solid. When initially accelerating the wheel gives a very scary recoil.this vehicle has been at the dealership twice, with only 2200 miles.the dealer forced me to wait 1.5 weeks to have the situation repaired - i am worried that the vehicle will malfunction causing me and my family bodily harm.

While driving to work i heard a clunking sound coming from my steering wheel as i was going over the freeway overpass the steering wheel stuck, i yanked on it as hard as i could until it moved. I got off the freeway immediately and pulled over. I was scared and crying, i sat there turning the steering wheel about 15 minutes. I continued very slow to work approx. Another 10 miles making sure that when i had to turn i did it very slowly. I called exclusively volvo informed them of what had occurred and i wanted my car towed in to be checked. I contacted my husband informed him of what happened and he decided thar instead of towing the car he would come and get the car since the dealer wasn't that far. Later that morning the service manager called and said " the bolt came off the air bag"and informed me of the approx. Cost. I could not believe that they would charge me anything, it was nothing that i did to cause the bolt to come loose. Fred had no answers as to why this occurred, he did agree that this was something that should not of happened yet he was not concerned about my safety or the publics safety. I told him to fix my car and save all and any parts no matter how big or small. I contacted mr. Rojas the general manager of the service dept. And explained the situation to him, he had no answers as to what could of happened and he as fred offered no indication that they would take any measures to try and find out.when i picked up my car i asked fred exactly what was done and where was the parts, he informed me that they screwed the same bolt back on and dusted off the air bag. I told him that was unacceptable because the bolt came off for a reason, all the hardware including the air bag should of been changed and the situation looked into, fred's response was, "it's just like if the bolt came off your license plate we would put it back on." i responded, my entire license plate can fall off and it would not endanger my life or the publics.

The electronic doors malfunctioned, the fob does not always open the door and at times when closing the driver side door.updated 12/15/06.

The dealer also made a life threatening mistake by screwing in the power steering pipe and losing power steering. This caused a bad noise and a life threatening situation with my car.

Whilie traveling to illinois from kansas, the power steering on my 2000 volvo s80 suddenly gave out.i stopped at the first available exit and checked the fluid level, which was empty.i then added 24 fl. Oz. Of power steering fluid and that corrected the problem for about 5-10 minutes.i ended up driving the remainder of the trip with no power steering.it appears that the leak is coming from the area of the power steering servo located at the lower end of the steering wheel rod.car was taken in today to the shop for repairs.the car has 34,000 miles on it, and is in prestine condition otherwise.i have seen other complaints regarding the same problem and i feel that a recall is certainly in order.

Power steering inoperable due to pump failure.due to weight, the volvo s80 is difficult to control without power steering.

Car has has many returns to dealer in first 20,000 miles for mechanical problems. No safety defect listed.

Mounting bolt on rear of left front hub/spindle assembly has backed out and jammed into drive shaft causing left wheel to lock up and twice causing near collisions. Has occured on three occasions. On third occasion, manufacturer has refused to accept responsibility.also severe and violent at times occasional clunking from left front of vehicle that has been seen by dealer 5 times without correction.dt

Took my car in and found that rack & pinion needed replacing.was advised by mechanic that volvo dealer told them there is a nationwide backorder on this part and it is not available.sounds to me like there is a recurring problem with the rack & pinion on the volvo s80 (mine is a 2000 model year.

I had a major leak in my 2000 volvo s80 power steering rack at 36000miles. Called the factory and they said there was a backorder on the part and they were not sure when they could replace the part. Seems there must be a recurrent problem here and i am wondering if a recall is in order. Volvo declined to help pay for the repair/replacement.

My wife was driving home from work and noticed that the car was making a squealing noise as she made right and left hand turns.when she got home i checked the power steering reservoir and found that it was empty.there was no warning of this happening, there was no fluid on the floor of the garage.i immediately purchased power steering fluid and filled the reservoir.the next day the floor was covered with fluid.i contacted my former volvo dealer and asked if they could look at the problem and was told that the vehicle was unsafe to drive.they recommended that i take to a local repair shop that specializes inimport cars.they identifed the problem as the rack & pinion and said not to drive the car as it was unsafe.i authorized them to begin the repair process and was advised that the cost would be about $1000.00 dollars.when contacting the customer service department of volvo north america i was told that they could not assist because the car was not in warrenty.the vehicle has 16,532 miles and has been garaged kept and maintained by the previous volvo dealer where the vechicle was purchased.i hardly think that any vehicle with such low mileage should have to have the rack & pinion steering replaced.i am very disapointed with the approach that volvo has taken to assist with this problem and have seen where other owners have experienced this same problem.when you pay $42,000 dollars for a car, you certainly expect that it will not require costly maintenance such as this with such low mileage.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. The contact stated that the vehicke began to shake while driving 25 mph. The contact maneuvered to the shoulder and noticed that the front driver's tire detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for a diagnosis. The dealer had yet to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was notified and they stated that the vehicle was not under the recall. The vehcile was repaired. The failure and current mileages were 175,000.

Consumer request reimbursement for previously repaired recall for electronic throttle system.the dealer replaced the wiper blades.the strut spring was replaced.

In the year 2000 consumer stated the upper ball joints were replaced under recall (00v238000), however on aug 12, 2002 while driving, the driver side front ball joint failed, which caused other damage to the vehicle, also when the vehicle was in the dealership having the recall performed, there was a noise coming from the front suspension, the dealer installed o-rings and bolts to the subframe.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.the contact experienced two failures listed as recalls for the suspension and vehicle speed control.the manufacturer stated that his vin was not included in the recalls.he is very upset with being excluded from the recalls because the failures are identical.while proceeding to make a left turn at approximately 5 mph, the tire detached from the front driver side of the vehicle.the contact felt that this was a very serious safety hazard.the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the wheel axle, lower control arm, and upper ball joint were replaced.the contact also observed the failure of the speed control mechanism.while driving between 55-60 mph and applying pressure to the accelerator pedal, the vehicle decelerated and hesitated.this failure occurs only during highway driving.the vehicle has not been repaired for this failure.the recall numbers were unknown.thefailure mileage was 53,000 and the current mileage was unknown.

The car was not alinged and i wore my tires. I had to pay 1000.00 for a new set. The car stereo has been replaced three times, cd wont eject, poor audio quality, lots of crackling. I still get lots of clunking from the front end. This car is not worth what i payed.

Intermittent problem, 2 occurrences.conditions at latest occurrence: dry pavement, air conditioner on, steady 65mph, two people in car. Symptoms: noticed humming sound that got louder and transitioned into significant rapid vibration of entire car. Steering wheel vibrated (not oscillated) 1/32 to 1/16 inch. Tried accelerating, very sluggish response and when car downshifted vibration did not change. Applied brakes and experienced significantly increased vibration especially in front end and pedal. Vibration was not pulsating like antilock brakes but rather like wheels oscillating.stopped and inspected wheels and tires-appeared normal. Problem did not reoccur when i resumed driving. Dealer checked car and did not find anything wrong.

See odi number 726533 for previous report. Intermittent problem, now 4 occurrences: thrumming sound that gets louder and transitions into significant rapid vibration of entire car. Conditions at latest occurrence: dry pavement, air conditioner on, dash thermometer reading 82f, steady 67mph, two people in car. Additional data: put transmission in neutral no change; varied rpm (still in neutral) no change; turned off engine no change. Restarted engine no change; then stopped. Vibration disappeared as speed dropped (believe about low 20s or teens). Ran hands over wheels and tires: appeared normal with no bumps or excessive heat. Problem did not reoccur when i resumed driving. Comments: ive had an ongoing complaint since i bought the car about a vibration in the range 60 to 75mph. The vibration feels like a wheel balance problem despite several attempts at re-balancing.the appearance of the thrumming sound and associated severe vibration resembles a reinforcing resonance developing from the basic vibration.

Nhtsa recall campaign 00v238000- ball joints, vehicle is experiencing an unknown rattle with possible ball joint failure.vehicle is outside the recall scope that was issued by volvo.

My wife was driving our car and the right front wheel fell off. She had just pulled out of a driveway and was not going very fast. The consequences were that the suspension was damaged and the ball joints, which had failed and caused the collapse, and the cv joints had to be replaced and some other body work and repairs had to be done. The ball joints were subject of a recall in 2001, then our accident was caused by a subsequent failure and now i am told the front suspension is loose and the ball joints need replacing again.something is seriously wrong with that system on the car.

The vehicle experienced the same defect with it's ball joint as stated in recall # 00 v 238 000.the consumers vehicle was not includedin the recall due to vin.*nlm

Ball joint separated causing the passenger weel assembly to disoldge and bring the vehicle to a sudden stop.

Without any prior warning, the left front ball joint separated and damaged the axle. No odd noises before hand.no unusual tire wear.we do all scheduled maintenance. No work had recently been done on the front end.the technician saidhe did not think the vehicle had ever been in a prior accident--he saw no indication of that. My daughter was on her way to work--going 40 mph--no one around her, and not yet on the freeway where she was headed, thank god.the technician called it a "catastrophic failure"and said he was not exaggerating when he used that term.both front ball joints were replaced (and the one that did not fail was not in good condition either) and the axle and 2 new tires.there had been a campaign to replace the original ball joints.this vehicle had the ball joints replaced in 2001.

- the contact ownsa 2000 volvo s80.the contact stated that there was safety recall 00v238000 that did not apply to this vehicle due to the vin. The contact stated that the problems he hadcurrentlywith this vehicle was directly related to the safety recall.there was front suspension noise prior to taking the vehicle through inspection, and the response time when making a turn was not as tight as it once was.the tie rods had anexcessive amount of play in them, and he believed that it wasdirectly related to the problem with the ball joints. The current and failure speed were both 92,000 miles.update 05/04/07

The vehicle experienced the same problem as stated in recall 00 v23 8000. Regarding the upper ball joints.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80.while driving 5 mph, the left ball joint assembly detached and caused the front axle to fail.the contact stated that the left front wheel collapsed.the vehicle was towed to the local mechanic and was sold to him.the current and failure mileages were 73,000.updated 09/18/07.

Vehicle shuts down while driving andengine check light illuminates. Volvo has been contacted.

Car began lurching when idling.took to dealer, who said the electronic throttle module needed replacement - and that nhts was investigating this.

I was driving and my car lights and all the electronic stop working and turn off

Problems with 2000 s80 t6. *mr *sc

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. The contact noticed thatwhen the vehicle was at a stop, the rpms fluctuated up and down. The contact also noticed that when he did not have the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard, the vehicle would suddenly surge forward. He experienced the failure with what he assumed to be the transmission for a year before taking it to the dealership . The authorized dealer was informed about the failure but the contact was told that the repair costs would be at his expense. He called the manufacturer and was informed that because the vehicle was no longer under warranty, he would be responsible for repair costs. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who cleaned the throttle body. The contact noticed no problems until recently. However, the contact began experiencing the same failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000 and the current mileage was approximately 125,000.the consumer stated the vehicle has a defective throttle body that makes the vehicle have an erratic idle when stopped or going very slow. As a result, it would lunge forward.updated 05/12/10.

Car cuts off unexpectedly while driving on freeway. Loses all power and shuts down. I have to put the car in park and start engine again. Car will also cut off when pulling into parking lots while trying to park. This has been going on since car was purchased in march of 2005.

Dt: the contact states thevehiclesurged and lurched when stopping. The electronic throttle module(etm) was replaced in the vehicle once, two years ago. The problem recurred. A certified dealer was contacted, who completed diagnostic testing, but captured no codes. After several failed attempts while the etm was under warranty the dealership could not diagnosis the problem. Now, after the warranty on the etmexpired, the dealership has diagnosedthe problem, the etmneeded to bereplaced again at the contact'sexpense.the contactwasnot the original owner of the vehicle.no repairs further have been made.

200 s80 was accelerating spontaneously and lunging forward.the car crashed into a garage wall while coasting into a parking space, and the accelerator was not depressed.the electronic throttle module was replaced.the volvo dealership mechanic could not get the computer error code, or appreciate the symptoms when he test drove the vehicle, and had to call my local mechanic (who identified the faulty etm) for help.volvo will now reimburse all customers who paid for throttle module repair/replacement in the past.i found this out only after i went to my dealership's service department and lodged a complaint about the etm repair.

I am the owner of a 2000 volvo s80.i purchased it under an extended warranty "certified" used car program from clayton volvo in knoxville tenn. In april 2001.several months later, while the car was still under warranty, the car died in the middle on an intersection. After towing it to the dealer it was discovered the electronic throttle module was fouled up with carbon. That unit was replaced under warranty.a couple years later, the car again died. This time it happened in a parking lot. Thankfully, in both cases it happened in a "safe" situation.again, the etm was determine to be the problem. But by this time, the warranty had expired. The dealer and the manufacturer refused to recognize that the problem was an on-going issue. This time i was forced to pay nearly $1000 in repairs.it is my understanding that you are collecting information on this problem, so i felt compelled to add my complaint.although i don't have specific dates available to me here, i can check my records and provide them if necessary.

My wife was driving on a busy 4 lane highway when the car stalled while in motion.she was unable to restart it when it was in neutral.she came very close to an accident as it was a very busy street.had the car towed to volvo of fife and they could find nothing wrong with it.said nothing registered on the computer.i told them this had happened to me once and seemed like a vapor lock.i was told that there was a part that has gone out on some of the early model s80's but it's $1,300.00 to replace and they didn't want to do that unless they knew for sure.the part hasn't been replaced and my wife is very concerned about what will happen if it stalls when she's doing 65 mph down the freeway.

Dt: the vehicle cut off.when getting ready to park the vehicle lunged forward. Did the same thing when sitting at a light iflet ting up from the brakes. The engine revved. When turning steering wheel to make a left or right hand turns its wa shard to get it to go back forward. This started back in 2000 but it became worse.

Approximately 6 months ago vehicle began erratic throttle while on speed control (surging). Dealer serviced vehicle with software update and temporarily resolved problem. Problem has returned as well a spontaneous stalling, and very erratic variance in throttle pedal position and acceleration. Stalling has occurred with throttle pedal release entering turn lane - no power steering nor brake boost. Dealer has serviced vehicle - cleaned sensors related to throttle position module - with no improvement. Wife is refusing to drive vehicle she now refers to as scary.

Dt: beginning last year, while driving in the neighborhood rpms would go way up and fall back down over and over for about 5 minutes. Then ,the engine cut off. The vehicle started right back up. Then, right away the problem would occur again. The car was taken to the dealership. The air intake valve was replaced. The problem stopped for a while. Then, the exact problem happened again on june 15 2005. The car would stop in traffic. The rmps would go up and down for about 5 minutes, and tthere was electrical power. There was no power steering or brakes when the car shut completely down.

As with a number of other postings on this site, i have a 2000 volvo s80 t6 and had a failure of the throttle body unit at about 72,000 miles on the car.i was traveling on the interstate in atlanta when i got the warning message that performance had been reduced.i called the volvo dealer, they stated to turn the car off and back on and the problem may correct itself.(they did say that i needed to bring the car in for them to look at.)the problem then was fixed for about 80 miles before i had failure again and had to have the car towed.they replaced the part and said it was not covered as a part of the "certified pre-owned" warranty.

Volvo usa involved over 18 months without result. Car extremely dangerous. Will sometimes refuse to accelerate on turns. Wife pregnant.

Our volvo was serviced regularly by our dealer. We complained about the car hesitating and was told that the problem was corrected. We left nj for a thanksgiving holiday trip to myrtle beach sc.about 30 miles from our destination, the car began to decelerate from 65 mph and would not go any faster than 20 mph.we proceed to pull off the highway and let the car cool down.after approx. 30 minutes we tried to restart the car and it did start so we continued onto myrtle beach at no more than 30 mph as that was as fast as the car would go.the next morning it was taken to the local volvo dealer approx. 5 miles away and it again refused to accelerate above 20-30 mph.beach volvo of myrtle beach, sc said the problem was the throttle control modular.a new throttle body was installed at a cost of $871.51.the car had 53,481 miles on it just over the 50,000 mileage warranty period. The car is a 2000 s80 vin [xxx]. When told of the problem by the dealer he said when the part goes, it goes without warning and there isn't anything you can do but replace it.i am glad we broke down late at night when there was no traffic around us because we were in the high speed lane doing 65 mph when it just quite and slowed to barely a crawl.if we had been on a busy corridor someone could have hit us from the rear and caused a terrible accident.volvo should be held accountable for this defect in design. Updated 07/19/2012information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I own a my 2000 volvo s80 2.9. Upon driving in town the car suddenly lost acceleration and engine started shaking. The message reader prompted me to stop and restart the engine. Well i did, in the turning lane, but it did not help. I pulled out of the cross section "shaking". My mechanic says the onboard computer prompts him to a faulty engine throttle module. Well this car has only 48000 miles on it.on the same note: on my 1999 s70 glt at around 60000 miles the same part had to be replaced, because it shut down the cruise control time-to-time.

The vehicle was not idling properly.while stopped at a stop light, the engine would speed up and slow down.when starting to move from a stop, the car would lurch forward as the engine speed increased.this resulted in numerous close calls of me having to stop suddenly before hitting the car in front of me, also increasing the chance of being hit from behind from cars as i stopped suddenly. The volvo dealer replaced the electronic throttle module as well as the mass air sensor to correct the problem.this is similar to the other complaints that have been reported about the etm on the volvo.

December 2004, etm / speed control fails on expressway. Car slows dangerously - uncontrollable throttle. Taken to dealer, two weeks out of warranty - all repairs $1,000,out of my pocket - no assistance by volvo - complained to north america hq - no response.told at service desk this was not an issue with other vehicles - after reading several news articles and the various issues surrounding this s -80 component - it is apparent there is a major issue with this component at volvo.

Etm failed on my 2000, volvo s80 in the summer of 2002. Lost power on an expressway in florida. I was able to proceed safely to the tampa airport parking lot, rented a car to get home. Next day had the car towed to a dealer near the airport, etm replaced under warranty. No recurring problem, traded the car in feb 2003.

Dt:2000 volvo . Vehicle intermittently stalled/lost power. Throttle body module was replaced.

Dt*: the contact stated while stopping at a red light the vehicle stalled with no warning. The engine was restarted and again stalled. The vehicle was towed to a local dealership where the vehicle was inspected. The dealer determined that the throttle body needed cleaning and the software updated. After the repairs were madethe vehicle was sold.

Dt:the vehicle stalled/died, and lost power due to throttle body failure. The consumer was involved in several near misses.

The consumer stated that the vehicle stalled.there was an issue with surgingwhen the air was on.the on board computer display suggested that the performance was reduced.the engine failure exhibited an engine surge or rpm bump when at idle.normal idle way 700 rpm.the engine would rev up to about 1000 rpm, then drop back to 700 rpm. *sc the throttle unit was replaced.

I own a 2000 volvo s-80.the electronic throttle module failed suddenly resulting in the inability to operate the vehicle at normal speed.this resulted in immediate uncontrolled deceleration and limited vehicle control.the vehicle was repaired by an authorized volvo dealer.volvo is aware of the problem with this part (reference the center for auto safety, see www.autosafety.org/article.php?scid=119&did817) and is involved in a pending lawsuit in california, in addition to state and federalagencies being involved.

Re:vovlo s80 2000 model year; car independently accellerated while being driven the car surged when in idle, then when put into drive, it suddenly accellerated without my pressing the gas.i was able to stop the car using the brake.when i took my foot off the brake, the car again accellerated.i stopped the car again, and when i took my foot off the brake it accellerated a third time.i turned the car off.as i was in an open parking lot, i turned the car on again to see if the problem was repeatable.the car again surged in ide, then accellerated soon after my putting it in drive.i turned the car off and on again, and the problem repeated a third time.forty-five minutes later, the car was started without incident.it was brought to the volvo dealer, where the mechanics repeatedly tried to duplicate the problem without success.we left the car at the dealership for eight weeks, basically refusing to pick up the car until they found the problem and corrected it.volvo had a specialist look at the car, and the specialist was ultimately able to duplicate the problem.the specialist noted that the car was increasing, instead of decreasing, rpm's as it came to a stop.they cleaned the throttle module and updated the software for the throttle mechanism. We looked into volvo's known problem with this model and found that the electronic throttle module (etm) has frequently failed, causing cars to stall and accellerate unexpectedly.we obtained the service records of our (recently purchased, used) car and found that the etm had already been replaced due to problems reported by the previous owner in 2003.one week ago, when the car stalled. The incident date entered below is approximate, but i can find out the exact date if that would be helpful.

In july, 2005 i took my 2000 s80 in for service complaining of general performance problems including surging when stopped, particularly when the a/c is running.sometimes i saw the tachometer jumping during the surge activity.red bank volvo, my regular service facility, advised me that the problem required software upgrades for ecm and etm, and if it persisted that my alternator would need cleaning.they never mentioned an etm defect.based upon the etm complaints listed on nhtsa's website, my early problems seem similar.

Engine revs up (100-300 rpm) when coming to a stop. You have to step on the brakes really hard so that it will not move. I have brought it to the shop 4 times and complaint about it but was told that they know that the car revs up but the rpm will not make it run. It does and i even called volvo customer service to get help but got nowhere.the dealership knows about the problem but was told that they cannot change the sensor because the compute does not lod a code and they will not be reimburse by volvo.please help... I know the car is defective but nobody is helping me to correct this problem.i even complained about the suspension being bad at the same time that i brought the car for the jerking problem but was told it was fine. Brought it 4 times and complained about the suspension but nothing. Last month volvo had a recall on the balljoints and that tells me that i was right complaining about the suspension. The car is getting worst. At times it just moves in a jerking motion when you put it in reverse or drive. Need your help and i don't know if you have received complaints from this. I would sincerely appreciate help since i have the car used by my kids. Rightnow i have not used it for a month bec. Of the problem. I got into an accident in ny when i nudge a pedestrian during a stop since the car jerks and i was not able to step on the brakes really to stop it from moving..the person was really mad and all i had to do is apologize.

I have a 2000 volvo s80 t6 with several etm or throttle control failures.i have had ist serviced twice and it continues to fail.my neighbor has the same problem.the vehicle stalls inadvertently and has stranded me in the middle of traffic where i narrowly missed being hit by a tractor trailer.my wife also was almost hit while making a left hand turn and stalling in the middle of an intersection.

In mid 2005, i started having problems with my volvo s80 (yr 2000) idling at stop lights. The idle would fluctuate from 400 to 1100 rpms. At times this would cause my car to die.while it was a nuisance at stop lights, it started to fluctuate at higher rpms and three times while on the interstate going approximately 55 mph the car died and i have to put in neutral and restart while in rush hour traffic. I took to service place and they did a diagnostic, and removed and cleaned the throttle body before replacement. The following codes were found in the ecm 9160, 9150, 904c 903f 9040 and 130a. After they reset the faults and removed and cleaned the throttle body, they test drove the car and the same idle and (and it died) problems existed. They replaced the throttle body actuator assy, upgrade engine management software to work with new actuator. Since they have replaced the electronic throttle body i have had zero idling problems to date. I have all copied of my paperwork if needed.

The contact owns a 2000,volvo s80. Vehicle stalled/died, and lost power three time while driving. Due to throttle body failure.

In august 2005, we took our vehicle in for routine maintenance at 67500 miles.i am the primary driver of this vehicle and had noticed some problems which were discussed with the service department.this vehicle had stalled at parking lot speeds and it had been sputtering at take-off.my husband presented the service department with a publication from the highway safety board which discussed a problem with the throttle body on the volvo s80.as we were having the same problems described in this publication, my husband asked the service department to replace the throttle body on our vehicle.the service department was aware of the problem but as volvo had not issued a recall, they were not authorized to replace this without the volvo warranty company reviewing this issue with our vehicle.the warranty company did examine our vehicle, but declined to replace the throttle body at that time.on december 11, 2005 my family (husband and two children, ages 2 and 10 months) were traveling home to the atlanta area from nashville, tennessee.while driving this vehicle, i noticed that it began to accelerate and decelerate and then completely lost power.we were traveling on i-75 south at interstate highway speeds and were able to get to the shoulder of the road when this happened. Unfortunately, we had to pull over onto the left shoulder as the two right lanes were in a construction zone. We were then endangered by traffic merging to the left which in some cases attempted to pass on the left shoulder.we had to have the car towed to nalley volvo in marietta, georgia which was approximately 34 miles from where we originally broke down. As this happened on a sunday evening and no rental car businesses were opened, we then had to get a taxi to take us the rest of the way to our home.on monday morning, my husband spoke with the service department about what had happened.the problem was diagnosed as a defective throttle body.

As the consumer parked the vehicle, it placed itself in reverse, the engine revved and accelerated across a median, and then had come to rest against two other vehicles and an abutment.*sc

- the contact stated that the2000 volvo s80 had repairsdone on 11/10/05 for the electronic throttle module.he originally had the repair completed on 11/10/05.the contact stated that the recall was repaired again on 02/09/07, and he still hasdthe same problems with the vehicle.the dealership informed him that he would have to be fully responsible for the cost of the repairs himself.the contact will be filling a complaint with the manufacturer on 2/20/07, and will be sending in information needed for reimbursement for the 1st repair.the failure mileage was 7800, and the current mileage was 101000.

The car throttle is faulty. My car revs to high rpm when idle and at low speeds. It also is in limp mode.when this problem was found and recalled in 2006 i brought the car in for the software upgrade, but the car is still trying to lunge forward at low speeds and revving in idle. I was told by volvo customer care there was nothing they will do for the problem since the software had been upgraded even though the throttle is faulty.

I just bought a 2000 s80 volvo with 125k miles on it and it has been surging up and down when i slow down and sometimes while i driving down the interstate. Just the last couple of days while slowing to turn into work it died nearly causing another car to rear end me. I has has also died a couple of more times today, luckily on a side street, both times while slowing down. I can see my tachometer surging up and down with the engine almost stalling out everytime i stop. I have been told this may be in part to a faulty throttle control modlue. Please check into this for me as i am getting afraid of driving my car for fear of an accident.

Nar 1/15/2003. The consumer was charged 185.61 for a possible defect of the throttle body. When the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, the vehicle was not exhibiting any symptoms so the claim was denied, however there consumer located a technical service bulletin which stated how claims could be submitted for reimbursement.

My 2000 s80 volvo a few weeks ago had a sudden loss of speed on highway. Message screen said to shut off engine and restart. This was at 65 mph. After pulling over and restarting car it would not go above 2k rpms. After 20 minutes it started and i brought it to dealer. They replaced the electronic throttle control module and also strongly recommended and i did upgrade software on another controller. I am very concerned after reading article today that the problem could happen again. I was lucky to be able to get to side of road.

Consumer request reimbursement for previously repaired recall for electronic throttle system.the dealer replaced the wiper blades.the strut spring was replaced.

2000 volvo s-80 t6 , etm part replaced in dec 2004, in conjunction with complaint number 10145678; returned car to dealership on saturday 5/13/06 to have software recall upgrade performed due to same conditions as present in 2004 incident - vehicle stopping unexpectedly in traffic. Car since saturday has continued to stop in traffic 5 times, car was returned to service, now the service department is saying the etm is ok , but i may have to pay to have the problem diagnosed- and could be another malfunctioning part that they did not inform me about on last service visit. They are expecting me to pay for part and labor replacement - which i believe is still in conjunction with the malfunction of the etm. My wife and family are afraid to get into this car.

A 2000 volvo s80 throttle control module failed causing the car to suddenly decelerate.

Electronic throttle module (etm) failed while vehicle traveling in traffic approximately 40 mph; caution lights and service engine urgent message displayed; unable to accelerate above 20 mph to get out of traffic; then fault cleared and vehicle ran ok; attempted to return home and etm failed again; then fault cleared again. No warning lights; vehicle drives ok, suspected loose gas cap; tightened and drove again; ran ok, then experienced same problem later in the day, this time left car to be towed. Failure of etm and warnings misleading true severity of failure. Volvo should change warning to "do not drive" is vehicle failure makes driving unsafe. Etm failure makes vehicle unsafe to drive in any conditions. Reported incident to volvo customer care.*la

I purchased a 2000 volvo s80 from carmax in feb. 2006. The car only had 26000 miles on it so i thought it was a great deal. I contacted the manufacturer to see if any and all recalls had been performed on the vehicle.they said the only thing needed to be done was to have the electronic throttle module system to be upgraded in the cars computer. On 5-11-06 the volvo dealer performed the upgrade.within one hour of picking up the car it began to rev and surge with the air conditioner on as if the throttle was sticking. After parking it to run an errand i tried to start the car and it would start but then immediately rev up and then die. I had to get it towed to carmax which it was warranted under.now carmax had the vehicle towed to the volvo dealer to have the electronic throttle control worked on.the volvo dealer diagnosed the problem as needing to replace the e.t.c. Module, which they did. Now i drive the car home on 5-16-06. After two hours of the car sitting at my house i attempt to go somewhere but the car starts and immediately begins to rev like before and then dies. I will attempt to drive the car to the dealer tomorrow 5-17-06 to be fixed again.

2000 volvo s80 suffered from a faulty throttle control module. *mr there was a pending lawsuit in california regarding these modules and their premature failure rates. *sc

The events that are occurring are that my vehicle will die on me, at times it won't start, and it lunges forward as i start the engine.it is also idling very high.it happens almost daily.i have had my vehicle checked for any recalls, and have had sensors replaced several times. Now my vehicle is smelling of gas as i try and start it.i had it repaired on 7/22/09, as the vehicle wouldn't pass smog, at which time apparently they replaced a sensor at that time.

It was a stall. When the vehicle stalls, it would shut off, be able to restarted, but not stay started without stalling, x-ref voq 10141399 and e-mail, seperate incident with previous etm

Dt: contact owns a 2000 volvo. While driving the vehicle lost speed and stalled. The problem was theelectronic throttle control module. The nhtsa campaign, pe05041.

I read recently of your inquiry into a stalling problem with certain volvo models.i had that problem with my 2000 volvo s80.for no apparent reason, the car started stalling without any warning.sometimes it would restart immediately, sometimes not.i managed to figure out that, if i always kept the engine revs up (meaning i had to always have my right foot on the throttle and keep the revs above @1500 rpm), i could prevent the stalling most of the time.i called my volvo dealer, betten imports, who unfortunately is 120 miles away in grand rapids.i was able to drive the car there, but it was a long, nerve-wracking trip.they seemed to be familiar with the problem and replaced the throttle body under warranty.my concern, after reading several articles being reported in the online press, is that other people who have had this repair have experienced a re-occurrence of this problem.in recent days i've noticed an unusual "hesitation" under mild acceleration sometimes, but nothing worse - so far.below, the "number of failures" is a best guess on my part.also, the "incident date" i've used below is actually the day the dealer repaired the car, as i don't have a record of when the problem actually began.it had been going on for several weeks before i could get the car repaired, though.

When merging onto hwy. Car lost power while trying to accelerate to enter lane.car behind me almost hit me and swerved into the other lane where he was almost hit by another car.the electronic throttle system of my car failed.volvo is replacing these per an extended warranty.had i known about this problem,i would have had the car repaired before there was a problem.i had to have the car towed and was then told this was a common problem with this car.why has there been no recall.i am the only private owner of this vehicle, having purchased it from a dealership.yet when i called volvo about this problem, they found my neighbor's car in their database, but not mine. I feel there are others being put at risk due to the autos throttle system failure.i have seen a letter sent to a television station stating that these cars havea problem they call, "limp home mode" . Well, mine was almost "dead in the road mode"i hope there are no deaths due to this problem.i have hadmy car fixed, because i could not drive it unless i did.i will not purchase any more volvos, due to the omission of the truth concerning this vehicle.thank you. Brenda tilley.

I own a 2000 volvo s-80 t6, which i have had nothing but problems with.before i had it, my son owned it and also had problems with it.one is that the vehicle doesn't start, it stalls, and it surges forward or in reverse.all since 2005.just last month i ran into my garage door and several times almost was involved in vehicle crashes due to it either surging forward or dying on me.i read how there is a possible recall on 2001 models, so why does it not include 2000 yrs.does it take an accident with lives lost before anything is done to correct these problems.the vehicle has been taken in to the dealership and i have been told that the problem has been taken care of.so why is it still happening?the last incident happened on january 3rd of 2009, where i ran into my garage, caused from the car surging. The vehicle has been in for the same problem on numerous occasions.

Volvo usa involved over 18 months without result. Car extremely dangerous. Will sometimes refuse to accelerate on turns. Wife pregnant.

My car started accelerating by itself. It would start to chug like it was going to cut off. There was little acceleration when i did give it the gas. I took it to the volvo dealer in milwaukee and had it fixed. The cost was just under $979.73.

I have a 2000 volvo s80 2.9 sedan.about one year ago, the car stalled as i was driving the vehicle.there was no warning sign it simply lost power and stalled.i was able to use the emergency brake to come to a stop and avoid and accident (at the time i had a 4 year old and a 2 year old in the car).the incident occurred close to my home, so after a brief period, i was able to start the car again and get it home.the next day it seemed fine and the dealership recommended an engine cleaner additive.about six month later the same thing happened to my wife after and she was also almost in an accident.she were able get the car started and get it home.after that the car seemed to surge from time to time.the dealer told me it was called "surging" and recommended a $ 1,600.00 repair job.i declined.today once again, the car, for no reason, stalled. I became aware the others have had this issue.i am submitting this complaint because my concern is that the vehicle may not be safe.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. The contact was driving 70 mph when the vehicle independently decelerated to 20 mph and the vehicle would not respond to acceleration attempts. The vehicle was shut off and restarted but the failure was still present.the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who advised that the vehicle probably needed a new computer but the mechanic was not positive that the repair would correct or was causing the failure. The contact then called the manufacturer in reference to nhtsa campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control) but was informed that the vehicle had previously been repaired according to the recall. The vehicle was not further repaired. The current mileage was approximately 166,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 162,000.

The consumer states that routine maintenance and servicing are the owners responsibility, and that it is not unusual for the throttle plate on the vehicle to require cleaning, and/or adjustment overtime.the manufacturer confirmed that sticking is a potential problem and that this attributed residue from the gasoline building up in the vehicle, and seems that the sticking throttle poses a substantial risk to vehicle occupants and others on the highway. The accelerator would become difficult or impossible to push down or/become stuck in the depressed position.the consumer did not see an instruction in the owner's manual that the throttle body requires routine maintenance. Possible related defect, due to necessity of cleaning the throttle body.*scc

My 2000 volvo s80 has failed to accelerate properly.in idle, it sometimes works fine, but at other times it idles erratically.several times recently, i've needed to accelerate quickly, but the car hesitated and displayed the check engine light.a few times, i attempted to accelerate anyway, and the light would begin to blink, and the car would still sputter.this created a dangerous situation for me and my family.i had the spark plugs replaced but that did not fix the problem.i learned recently that this is indicative of a failed etm (electronic throttle module), which has been an issue with this model car.

My 2000 volvo s80 2.9 vehicle started surging then hesitating, back & forth, at all speeds up to 70 mph interstate speeds while cruise control was on and off. When cruise control is on, after about 5-10 miles, cruise control turns itself off & car suddenly starts decelerating. After about 1 week of this, on 6/30/06 performance reduced message appeared. On 6-24-06 engine service required message appeared for a short time. After stopping and turning motor off for about 30 minutes to read owner's manual, started motor again & message has not reappeared. When cruise turns itself off, you cannot turn cruise back on until motor is stopped & restarted, then you can turn cruise control back on for about 5-10 miles then it will go back off. Surging and hesitation continues with steady pressure on accelerator (trying to maintain constant speed) and cruise control off.

I owned a 2000 volvo s-80 sedan that had a throttle body failure on 08/13/03 while traveling on i-35 in iowa. The engine stalled on the interstate. The car had 53,487 miles on it. I understand that you have had a number of complaints about volvo throttle body failures and thought you should be informed. I considered the car to dangerous to drive and sold it within a month of the incident. The car was repaired with a new throttle body and accessories at betts auto campus in des moines, iowa at a cost of $895.50.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s80. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the windshield wipers began working on their own. For the duration of the drive, they kept turning on and off intermittently. The contact had to pull the fuse to stop the failure and complete his trip. The dealer was contacted but offered little assistance. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were 146,000... Updated 08-07-12updated 08/09/12

Failed climate control unit driving to work. Air bag system sevice urgent (in info. Box) came on and still on. Eat belt tighten for no reason.

While driving rearview mirror glared off the dashboard. This caused poor visibility.consumer drove vehicle todealer for inspection, and mechanic insisted that the problem could not be duplicated, and the vehicle was operating as designed.

While driving sun roof bar which is a metal bar that goes around the glass in the sunroof caved in on the consumer. She contacted the dealer, and was told this was a common problem with the sun roofs in volvo vehicles.

I own a 2000 volvo s-80.while proceeding through automatic car wash, the sunroof shattered during the blower/dryer operation.car wash manager informed me that these models have a propensity to break at the same spot in the car wash process.he stated that volvo replaces the sunroof under warranty, but when i contacted volvo, they denied any knowledge of the problem.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with the sunroof. Also stated that while on a car wash an the minute the dryer started sucking the air to dry the vehicle the sunroof broke in pieces and the roof almost came off. Dealer was contacted and stated that is not their problem. Ts

The sunroof on my volvo s80 exploded in the carwash under the dryer. I had it fixed and the people of the carwash association said volvo is to reimburse me but no one wants too.

I took my car to a car wash in feb. 2008 and the sunroof exploded. It cost me almost$1500.00 to fix. I sent in the documentation to the carwash association. They told me volvo will reimburse me. I pray they are right.

My wife was driving the vehicle and i was a passenger.when attempting to open the sunroof and when it was about 1/4 opened, a steel bar, about 26 inchesin length came out of the roof openingand hit my wife on the right side of her head while she was driving. The glass did not break only the metal bar that was glued to the glass came loose and fell out.had she turned her head in my direction, the bar could have caused serious injury and even could have hit one of her eyes.this metal bar was attached to the leading edge of the glass.no accident or serious injury other thanbruised skin occurred.on nov 29th the car was takento the dealer to be evaluated and spoke to the service manager who said he never heard of this happening before.when he called a mechanic over to ask his opinion, the mechanic stated that they just replaced a sunroof glass on a similar car the previous week with the same problem.the service manager only said that if the glass was replaced, it would be very costly.no offer was made to repair or replace with a better part.this incident could have caused a serious or deadly accident.

Residence shown is in ny where i am currently located and can be contacted.; i am florida homeowner at 6366 pebble creek way,,boynton beach,fl 33437 during winter months. Car color is metallic moondust with interior color"sand". Reflective glare on windhield from dash is critical safety hazard. Driving in bright sunlight or dappled shade/sun is impossible. Have had to slow down to 5 mph on interstate, or even stop at times, because of total inability to see. Mfr representative pat sacus at exec offices (1 2017674737 ext 1976) rockleigh,nj indicates they can,and will, do nothing despite acknowledging the possible serious safety impications. In twenty or more cars i have owned, have never had such a severe safety concern in need of correction. Sun glasses do not help, nor does placing a piece of dark cloth on dashboard. According to ms sacus, all previous volvos had black(only) dash boards, but colors were installed in response to consumer desires. Presumably, the probl;em exists only with the lighter colors, but there is no question in my mind that a very serious accident awaits. Similarly, an additional safety hazard exists on the dash board and instrument panel. The dark background and l.e.d. Lighting is almost invisible during daylight (although fine at night). In order to read items on dash such as radio station in tune or , message board, eyes must be taken off the road and one must actually bend down to look at the panel closely in order to see when in bright light. Ahazard indeed, but one i have learned to live with....i just do not try to read radio station info. I urge testing of this auto (in the color and dash color specified)whiledrivingintobright sunlight. However, i urge your tester to drive slowly!! also, please test in dappled bright sun/shade; or drive from sunlight into a darkened garage. One is almost totally blind. Volvo has shot themselves in the foot with a quality automobile that is virtually undriveable in daylight sunshine.

Reflection from dashboard onto windshield causes image that impairs vision during daylight hours.

Consumer request reimbursement for previously repaired recall for electronic throttle system.the dealer replaced the wiper blades.the strut spring was replaced.
