The contact owned a 2000 volvo s70. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle was involved in a side impact collision that resulted in a rollover. The air bags did not deploy. There was one injury that required medical attention. The contact suffered from internal organ damage and severe pain. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard where it was deemed destroyed. The manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 143,000.
My fiance went out to the vehicle which was parked to retrieve an item she left in it.upon her sitting down in the driver seat, mind you the engine was not on nor was the key in the ignition, the side airbag deployed striking the left side of her face.the force stunned her for a few seconds, leaving her confused on what had happened.her hearing was also affected.she went to the emergency room to get checked out where it was concluded that she suffered a scratched cornea due to the powder released from the airbag, as well as her aqueous radius humor of her eye was knocked out of balance from the force of the deployment.
I was in an accident in my 2000 volvo s70 in which the car was totaled.the driver's side airbag did not deploy.the passenger side airbag did deploy.although, i was not seriously injured, i would like to report that the driver's side airbag did not deploy at any time during the accident.
The vehicle was involved in a frontal collision and the air bags failed to deploy.the driver side seat belt did not lock andthe consumer hit the steering wheel. Volvo refused to send the consumer an analysis report. *scc
Airbag has failed twice. Replaced under warranty and failed again. Volvo claims no warranty on the replaced airbag.
In a front-end collision (of approximately 40 mph), airbag did not deploy, and the drivers seat belt did not lock.
I was driving my car on the highway and as soon as i reached 60 mph my ets light came on along with my brake light and oil light. My speedometer went to zero and my car was acting strange. I pulled over and stopped and heard a loud noise from the engine. I turned off my car. I called aaa and asked for a tow. While the tow truck was coming, i tried turning my car on again and the ets light came on flashing and the car wouldn't start. I started to google this problem and saw many people had the ets on their volvo recalled. I called volvo and they declined to help me. They said i need to pay for a new ets module. They said my car doesn't have a recall on it. I found this to be not true after checking your website for recalls along with another .gov website. I called volvo again and the same guy told me not to call them anymore and he hung up the phone. When my car was finally at home, i called my mechanic who used to work at a different volvo (30 miles from where i live) and he came to look at my car. We switched out the battery, put in a new starter, new alternator, switched out all my fuses with new fuses, changed spark plugs and spark wires, put new coils on and did an oil change. The car started, however the ets light has been on ever since and when i reach highway speeds, it does the same thing. I have not driven it since. The ets is recalled for my volvo when i entered the vin. I need help with getting volvo to fix the recall or do something about it. The state patrol did come behind me to ask if everything was okay as i was waiting for the tow truck. I don't have any police reports but i do have the officers card if needed.
Failure and its consequences.
Ignition coil failure.
I owned a volvo s70 2000 model with a variety of maintenance issues related to stalling and surging. I had to pay for a new throttle module, air mass sensor and throttle cleaning. I believe this cost over $1000 on parts that should have been designed to last far longer than they did. You can find more info on this problem at http://www.volvo-forums.com/lofiversion/index.php/t1877.html.
12 volt adapter needed to use hands free cell phone as required by law in new york & most other states failed due to design defect.
We purchased the volvo 2000 s70 vehicle in 9/01 with 25,000 miles. A 30,000 mile check-up was performed by santa monica volvo on 12/26/01. Steven and ibegan a 14-month road trip around the us and had the vehicle maintained at volvo dealers throughout the country (the check engine light periodically came on and we would ask the dealers about it. We were told not to worry about the light.) the road trip accounts for the accrued miles put on the vehicle in such a short period of time. Returned to california 3/04. Brought the vehicle into santa monica volvo to have the 75,000 mile check-up. They did the check-up and we drove away. The ets and check engine light came on within one mile, car began to jerk, called the dealer and immediately returned the vehicle. Sm volvo did the diagnostics but did not know why the ets light came on as we drove away. These things happen, they said. Sm volvo explained that certain codes came up, they would reset the computer (code ezm#91a7 on the throttle unit) and download a new program. They would be able to repair it by doing additional work and did not guarantee the computer reset. We asked if the repair would be guaranteed or could we drive off again and get the same results.they could not guarantee that it would resolve the issue. This led us to believe that everytime we approved them to repair the problem, it would continue to occur. Not guaranteeing that they can resolve the problem made us consider more research and/or a second opinion. We decided to leave the dealer without repair.we have driven the vehicle locally since then, but with many failures. Alot of jerking, sometimes the engine shuts off and i have to sit for 5 minutes before the engine will turn on again. The vehicle currently has 82,000 miles. We have only driven 5,000 in 16 months. We are only using the vehicle for errands and work. We do not want to give the dealer free reign over charges and repairs that they cannot justify or guarantee.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. While driving at approximately 20 mph, the vehicle accelerated. When making a left or right turn, the vehicle stalled and the ets light illuminated. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 131,000.
Add to nhtsa action number : pe05041i would like to add my complain to above case. First time my car just stalled on a highway. Luckly for me, i managed to avoid an accident. It happened back in february or march of 2003, when my car had approximately 65,000 miles. Last week "check engine" light came off and i took my car for a check-up. Dealer told me that etm is failing. My car now has 104,000 miles, thus less than 40,000 since last failure. Dealer refused to fix this and quoted me replacement cost of approximately $1,100.now i have to drive everyday and wait in fear when etm will fail again.
The abs module has failed, causing the vehicle to have loss of power at start. In addition, the brakes do not work at full capacity, causing the vehicle to be unsafe. The speedometer is also inoperative. The failure occurs quite frequently during drive time. Having the part rebuilt.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70.while driving approximately 45 mph, the check engine light illuminated intermittently.approximately three months later, the electronic throttle system (ets) light illuminated on the instrument panel.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they cleaned the ets.when the contact went to retrieve the vehicle, the ets light illuminated again and the vehicle was left at the dealer.the current mileage was 78,728 and failure mileage was 78,528.
Failure of electronic throttle control module resulted in sudden and persistent loss of speed and steering assist without warning when driving on highway in traffic.
Electrical failures causing dash to go blank, which is not safe. Also, caution lights and other engine repair lights come on randomly. If you go to the internet you will find a persistent problem with the volvo. I have a friend that was an ex engineer for gm and has several ford engineer friends in detroit. He stated they were very aware of the electrical problems with the volvo, most of which began with fords purchase of the company. Since then the occurrence of problems has steadily rosethe cost of replacing the dash electronics and wire harnesses are cost prohibitive and may not fix the problem. Here is just one of many sources of comments from owners of just one model of volvo. There are problems throughout the line and the company is not in the financial condition to make a recall. See this link:http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0fcaf2/5i tried to call volvo over a minor cost item which is a poorly engineered cup holder. Their response was that swedish people do not bring drinks into their cars and the cup holder is an american add-on. If they try this cop out for a $50 cup holder what would they say about a $1000 plus electrical repair?
Electronic throttle failure (ets), car stopped responding to throttle input while driving on highway, car needs to be fixed but i can't afford the outrageous cost of the repair $1100.
Approximately 26 months ago, i was experiencing considerable difficulty with the starting of my passenger vehicle with an increase frequency of the problem re-occurring.specifically, the engine would turn but would not start.in order to start the vehicle, i would have to turn the key back and forth several times (3 - 5) until the computer chip in the key signaled the computer chip in the steering column and the vehicle started.upon contacting a nearby dealership (dwyer & sons, michigan) and troubleshooting the problem, i was informed that the antenna ring within the steering column was broken and required replacement as well as the immobilizer and the re-ordering of two ignition keys and one trunk key.these repairs were completed may 2006 with only a limited parts warranty available.approximately four months ago, the problem began occurring again.upon contacting michael mullett with dwyer & sons, i informed him of the same problem and he responded that the parts warranty was only valid for twelve months.during a return trip to michigan, i followed up with mr. Mullett and scheduled an appointment to address the problem.again, mr. Mullett diagnosed the problem as the antenna ring and immoblizer as well as two ignition keys and a trunk key which required replacement at an approximate cost of $700.00 (parts & labor).mr. Mullett indicated that they (as a dealership) have to address this problem with multiple customers over the years, however, volvo has failed to recognize that this problem may be more widespread among all their customers.help !!two identical repairs within 23 months.i would appreciate your assistance in addressing this problem in hopes of having it properly addressed at the manufacturers expense as well as reimbursement of the initial repair in may 2006.thank you.
2000 volvo s-70car stalled while traveling at any speed. I had to spend $1200 to have the electronic module that regulates the airflow and gas to the engine replaced. I did some research and found this to be a common problem with this model. Volvo is aware of the problem, but is not recalling or reimbursing car owners.
I have a 200 volvo s70.a couple of days ago, my son was driving it and, suddenly, the ets indicatorlight came on, the car started shaking, and lost power (my son said it couldn't go faster than about 10 mph).my owner's manual informs me that this light indicates a fault in the etc (electronic throttle control system).in researching this problem, i have discovered that it is fairly widespread.this is potentially very dangerous.in fact, one person gave a harrowing account (on the internet) of almost being hit by oncoming traffic while making a left turn because this problem caused his car's speed to diminish to a crawl even as he floored the accelerator in a situation where other drivers rightly expected him to be moving much more quickly.apparently, the usual repair for this problem is replacement of the ecm(electronic control module), a job which costs about a thousand dollars.considering the significant expense of this job, many volvo drivers might be understandably reluctant to part with that much money; that could be dangerous.i have spoken to several people at volvo dealerships and will speak to someone in the service department of my local volvo dealer tomorrow.i should add that, after letting the car sit with the ignition off for about a half hour, it started right up and has been performing absolutely normally so far.some say the problem will probably happen again, and one volvo technician said that maybe it was just a "hiccup" that won't ever return. I don't want to spend a thousand dollars if the latter possibility is correct; on the other hand, i don't feel secure about taking my daily commute over a high-traffic bridge or contemplating a long vacation trip in this car.i bought a volvo because of its reputation for safety.ironically, now i feel anything but safe.
The ets light came on intermittently. The car ended up stalling after being parked upon trying to restart it. Thia is am issue that only the volvo dealership can fix since it involves reprogramming or replacing and programming a new ets module. Fortunately it happened to me in a parking lot and i was able to get it rowed to a shop twice. Now it is going to the dealer.
Recently my 2000 s70 volvo has been experiencing acceleration problems. My ets electronic throttle system)light will illuminate causing the car to shudder and eventually stall in rush hour traffic. After a few moments and after re-start , the vehicle will function as normal. I took it to my volvo shop and was informed that it is the electronic module and must be replaced by a certified volvo dealer. I have recently set up an appointment to have this repair completed.
While driving on the highway (just normal highway driving), i lost control of the car - the gas seemed to stick and the engine revved up and then the car just shut down. It seemed to stall. This happened twice before it took it in for repair.i took it to the dealership and they replaced the electronic throttle system for $2,000. It has not happened again but during other routine maintenance it was found that the throttle system was not functioning properly so it was replaced for a second time.
I am writing just to supply additional information regarding your ongoing investigation pe05041.during the first few years that i owned my 2000 volvo s70 glt se, i experienced several electronic throttle control failures, which grew progressively worse.the vehicle would suddenly lose speed when accelerating and be unresponsive when the gas pedal was depressed.the car was still under warranty when these failures occurred, so volvo replaced the electronic throttle control mechanism at no charge.to date, the replacement mechanism has not failed, but i would be interested in knowing what the average failure age of the replacement parts has been.i have two small children who are frequently in the car with me.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. The contact stated that the service engine warning indicator illuminated. In addition, the vehicle stalled on several occasions when coming to a stop. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop. The technician stated that the software needed to be updated and the code was showing that the throttle body displayed an invalid error code. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.
I have a 2000 volvo s70 with ets light and check engine light on. The car stalls and surges/lunges at all rates of speed and is very unsafe. After doing research i found out there was a recall on this part. I called my local dealer and ran the vin#. They stated the recall was done in 2009. I called volvo corp. Customer care line and they stated that my car was too old and no longer covered under the warranty/recall. I don't understand how i am responsible for paying for a faulty part by the oem manufacture when they replaced the faulty part with faulty parts. In my research i found out if my electronic throttle body was replace it would have a yellow label on it. Mine does not. It has the original white label on it. I believe that it may have had the software upgrade and cleaned but i do not believe the actual unit was replaced. I took my car into the local volvo store in winter park fl where i was charged a total of $127 and some change to tell me that i needed a new electronic throttle body and would require a new software upgrade. Total cost to repair $880.00 and quote does not say that the software update is included. I am not the original owner of the car. I bought it with 75,000 miles and currently have 92,000 miles. Volvos efforts to fix this problem is not working and if it does work it does not fix the car for very long. Why is it that the warranty for the recall part is based on the total vehicle mileage and age instead of the age and mileage of the replacement part or from the time the recall was issued? i do not have any faith that spending the money to fix the car will solve the problem only delay it from recurring with in months or few thousand miles. This is still an on going problem with this model car and volvo does not seem to care that they are putting lives in danger.
During normal cruising around 55-60 mph, the ets light will come on as the vehicle begins to stutter and the engine modulates.it has become worse over the last week and now the engine "bucks" when the light is on!this is unpleasant at 55 mph!every time the ets light comes on the cruise control disengages and is not able to be reset until the light goes off many ignition cycles (days) later.some research was done over the web and it is amazing to see people describe the exact same or similar manifestation happen on their s70s.i have an appointment tomorrow at the dealer in ann arbor and expect a > $900 bill!come on volvo, how can you not have so many compliants and not recall?
I own a 2000 volvo s70.i experienced the failure of the electronic throttle module several times this year, 2005.the car would often run rough and attempt to stall while driving.on one trip from new albany, in, to cleveland, oh, it happened so often that i had to leave the car in cincinnati and rent a car from enterprise car rental in order to get to cleveland.that rental cost me $236.04.i tried to have the problem diagnosed at several garages in southern indiana, but to no avail.finally, i took the car to volvo of louisville, kentucky, on july 7, 2005.they diagnosed the problem as a faulty electronic throttle module and replaced the entire throttle body system at a cost of $803.73.what prompted my filing this complaint was an article that appeared in the louisville courier-journal on august 2, 2005.it was written by associated press reporter ken thomas.it indicated that there had been 136 complaints regarding the electronic throttle module.one of the models mentioned was the 2000 s70 sedan, which i own.
In early october 2003 the electronic throttle system (ets) light appeared on my car's panel.this affected the drivability of the vehicle.i purchased an additional warranty for my vehicle when i bought the car in may 2000.the dealer indicated that my warranty would not cover this problem and that it would cost approximately $900 to repair it.i declined the service.the light continues to come on frequently (i.e., every 2nd or 3rd day of the week).when this happens, i will pull over and turn off the car for a moment.when i start it up again, the light does not appear and drivability is normal.as a volvo owner for the past 17 years, i have not experienced any similar malfunctions.i have owned a 1982 volvo 240, a 1992 volvo 240 and my current volvo s70.i would appreciate if you would research this malfunction to determine if you have received (or the manufacturer) complaints from other volvo owners.thank you for your help. *nlm
Ever since purchasing our volvo, there has been power reduction and surges of which i've brought up to the dealership where purchased.my husband has asked what may cause this sort of thing because we didn't want it to be the transmission.we were told it was part of the way a volvo works.the incident that led to it having to be repaired was when we returned from an hour and half drive and pulled into a parking lot where the engine started revving continuously.a light came on the dash, esl. The only thing in the manual i could find was what the initials stood for-electronic throttle system.we were able to drive it home after short while because of a safety devise in the vehicle that allows this apparently. The next day my husband called our dealership who we bought it from and was told we had to take it to a garage 50 miles away because they're the only ones with the equipment to diagnose and repair the problem.we continued our questioning of the situation and 3 mechanics in 3 different garages told us they were aware of the problem but there was no recall (yet).however, i understand from an acquaintance now that the repair is only a band aid and the problem will return because a component needs to be replaced.the cost for this repair which is ultimately a computer chip replacement and download is approximately $1100.the garage performing the repair has also alerted us of a head light defect that cost $55 to repair and suggested we take care of it because the headlights might just stop working at any given time.
Car began to lose acceleration on 10-15-05 and would take a full 2 min to reach 55 mph with only minimal throttle depression (any more than only the least would cause the drive train to jerk and refuse to propel the car at all). If the car was pulled over and restarted the problem would correct itself for a while (sometimes the gap in between malfunctions would be several hours initially) but would always return. Ran trouble codes and the oxygen sensor was initially faulty. Replaced then the engine would idle erratically upon startup, but after a period of time (5-15 minutes) it would all of a sudden correct itself - racing the engine seemed to shorten the time period, but you would have to depress and quickly release the gas pedalin order to get the rpm's significantly high enoughto facilitate the smooth operation.once the engine ran fine, it would operate well as long as the car was never shut off (it was ran on a journey of 1,000 miles and operated perfectly normal). The moment it was shut down, even for the briefest of spans, it would act in the same manner with the idle fluctuating wildly, but seemed to be prone to stalling when the engine was warm/hot.volvo was contacted and recommended dealer diagnosis to determine the scope of the problem.when the car was brought in for service, i was assured that it "could not possibly be the computer(etm)".however there was a software update installed (hmmmmm.....couldn't possibly, but lets adjust it....hmmmmmm ) which corrected the rough idle initially.only problem is now the car will not reach or exceed 4,000 rpm even with the car in park (not under load) and will stall jerk and refuse to accelerate under hard pedal pressure and will not drive above about 70 mph on the highway without protestation, loss of acceleration or jerking.all of the diagnostic trouble codes still indicate that the cylinders are wilding misfiring and i'm getting sick of trying to fix volvo's engineering problem.
My 2000 volvo s70 is experiencing engine trouble over the last few months.i have been told by a repair shop that it is the electronic throttle module causing the problem.after numerous phone calls to several other shops and dealers, as well as investigations over the internet, it appears that there is a defect in the module that will cause the car to go into a "cripple mode" at any given point.this has happened to me.volvo apparently does not believe that it is a product defect, but rather it is a maintenance issue.i have had the module cleaned but it has not helped the problem.i do not believe that a situation such as this, which will cost about $1,000 to fix, can be considered a maintenance issue.the car has less than 60,000 miles.
The automobile would begin to shake and stall when approaching lower speeds. Also when accelerating, the engine would have a delayed response and not accelerate properly. The ets warning light would come on just prior to the event. After the car was restarted, the vehicle would operate fine until the next occurrence. After the etm module was replaced at my expense, no problems.
Narrative description:#1: in early 2005, an intermittent problem began occurring with the ignition and starting of the vehicle.#2: upon further investigation through local volvo dealerships, the problem was identified as the immoblizer (antenna ring) which reads the computer chip within the key to determine if the correct key is being used to start the vehicle.initially, the problem was intermittent but has become increasingly worse with an inability to start the vehicle.#3: volvo "is" aware of my problem, however, the only assistance they have provided is to turn the key back to the start position, remove the key, turn 180 degrees, re-enter the key and the vehicle should start.although this is one solution to a recurring and on-going problem, it does require repair as this problem is oem equipment installed by volvo and i believe represents a safety issue.please help us...
Intermittent loss of all interior power including windows, door locks, dashboard lights, heat, a/c, windshield wipers, air bags, radio.called dealer/servicer and was told they never heard of the problem;called again a few months later and was told to bring it in; brought in for service and told "no problem found."several months later loss of all interior power more frequently;brought in for service again and told the engine wiring harness had melted wiring and had to be replaced;was also told could have resulted in fire if continued to operate the vehicle; had to replace engine wiring harness; could not operate windshield wipers in pouring rain; could not see dashboard at night;

Dt*: the contact stated the abs and stability control function lights illuminated on the dash intermittently.the abs also engages intermittently at various speeds.the brake pedal pulsates when depressed.the dealership has been informed.
Ignition coil is misfiring, and park neutral position switch also known as the transmission position switch or neutral safety switch is having issues. When its idling its really rough while driving the car jolts an hiccups. Doesn't know what gear it's going into

While teaching my son to drive our 2000 volvo s70, our car started jerking as he was coming to a stop.at the stop light, the car continued to have a jerking motion.the ets light came on so i looked this problem up in our manual.it says, 'if the light remains on, the system should be inspected by an authorized volvo retailer'.the light went out so we didn't think that this was going to be an ongoing problem.we continued to drive the car and it worked fine.on some occasions the light would come on and we would simply bring the car to a stop and turn the car off.the light would go off.i became concerned about this only after the light came on and i couldn't bring the car to an immediate stop.i was gearingup to a merge where cars are weaving and out of each other at rush hour to position themselves to get onto or off the highway, respectively.the light came on and i couldn't stop.the car's accelerator began to behave erratically like it was losing pressure but i wasn't in a location where i could stop;i barely avoided a major accident.when i brought the car to a stop and turned the engine off the light went off again as if nothing was wrong.i came straight home and got online to get insight.i read that volvo owners in cal had brought a class action lawsuit over this safety issue.ironically, we had just had our 90k service performed 3 mos before this problem occurred.we thought that we were maintaining our vehicle to its highest safety standards.now we have to bring the car back in for a $1k fix.i am adding my voice to other volvo owners who've had this problem and believe that it's volvos duty to correct it before there are significant deaths attributed to it.if nothing else, the manual should say, 'bring your car in immediately to be fixed because the problem will worsen and eventually lead to complete engine failure and potentially your death and the death of innocent people in the cars around you who hit you unsuspecting because your car's engine fails'.

Dt: vehicle stalled/died and lost power. Dealer replaced the throttle body.
Tl-the contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. The contact stated that while she was driving at various speeds the ets light would illuminate on the instrumental panel. The vehicle was then diagnosed by a dealer and they advised her that the "electronic throttle system" would cause the vehicle to loose all power and potentially be dangerous. The manufacturer was contacted and advised her that they would send her a coupon since the actual recall has expired. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 79,300. Tb
Noticed engine dying out when accelerating, the problem was noticeably getting worse. Finally the car came to a stop at the light, light turned green pressed on the accelerator pedal and no response, car sat there in idle with no response to pressing on the pedal.
Car stalled without warning a couple of times.
While driving at 65 with cruise control on, the ets light came on and the cruise control turned off causing the car to decelerate suddenly.this is a safety issue as it can lead to a collision from the rear. The car was still drivable with manual control of the accelerator, but experienced intermittent stuttering while being driven at highway speed. Diagnostic by the dealer revealed that the electronic throttle module is failing and must be replaced.the cost of the repair being900 dollars.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70.while driving 55 mph in an attempt to maintain speed the the vehicle lost power.the vehicle failure occurred occasionalyon a daily basis.the failureoccurred for approximately six months.thecontactstated that the dealer misdiagnosed the failure on the last three attempts.the current mileage was 95,000 , and the failure mileage were 80,000.
My 2000 volvo s70 had a malfunction of the electronic throttle control module and i almost got rear ended on the highway when the car have an abrupt loss of speed.i took the car to a volvo dealer and was charged $1,500 to replace the module about 5 weeks ago but it looks like the car is starting to malfunction again.
2000 s70 - multiple repairs and multiple recurring incidents of this same problem!check engine light comes on, engine runs rough, tach bounces and power deminishes becoming a sever hazard in high speed traffic.dealer found the problem to be "known issues" with the electronic air mass and throttle systems.replaced twice while under warranty, extended warranty denied, shortly out of warranty and problem returns again.dealership nor volvo will take any corrective action on >$1000 repair (which according to the service tech is almost guaranteed to return).this is my third volvo, and certainly my last.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. While driving 40 mph the contact noticed that the rpm's suddenly increased from 2000 to 3000 within 15 seconds without the contact engaging the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the air mass meter, evaporator valve, catalytic converter, and the speed sensor needed to be replaced. There were no prior warnings. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 117,000. The current mileage was 118,000.
My 2000 volvo s70 failed on i-55 in ms. And i had to pull off the road in high speed traffic. It was very dangerous.each time the failure was immediately preceded by the ets light coming on.
Consumer was traveling 60mph in a 65mph zone. Passing another vehicle going 60mph he flooredthrottle andets light came up ondashboard.vehicle went down to 2,000 rpm's.consumer pulled over, and read manual, startingvehicle back up and it happened again.dealer didn't know what to do. They had to inspect it forproblem.the tube going from behind the grill to the air cleaner inlet was collapsing causinglack of air flow to the engine. The tube was removed and the problem was solved.
The ets (electronic throttle system) light come on intermittenly for about a month, then on april 20, 2004 while i was driving on the highway, the light stays on the car was sluggish in accelerating.i had to get off the highway to take local streets.
While driving 35 mphvehicle completely shutdown without warning. Vehiclewas towed to dealer.dealaer replacedaxle.please give any further details.
Engine problems since day 1.always intermittant and without warning.i feel the car is rendered unsafe due to the potential for total unexpected power loss.deal refuses to work on car until authorized by volvo usa.6 months and no word yet
Dt: the contact statedenginesputtered and choked, thenit eventually stalled. The electrical throttle system ( ets ) lightilluminated. She took the vehicle to dealerfor service. The ets and exhaust/crankcaseemission control module (ecm) were replaced. The vehicle was operating correctly.the vehicle has been to the dealership five times since september 2005.
The consumer experienced a problem with the throttle body and mass airflow on his 2000 volvo s70.the power steering failed and fluid leaked all over the driveway. The power steering pump and reservoir needed to be replaced. Why driving, the air director fell off the bumper.
2000 volvo s70 mileage: 49642ets (electronic throttle system) light came on. Sudden loss of power, hesitation, and stalling without any indication. Subsequent search on the internet i found out the etm (electronic throttle module) and the ets failures were related and possible recall on parts by volvo.serviced at fairfax volvo (703) 591-1820 on 10/18/2005.service cost $900.00.
Dt: vehicle interrmittently stalled and died . Took vehicle to dealer, who suggested the problem wa sthe intake manifold system.
Narrative description:#1: in mid/late 2003, the interior leather door panels began to "bubble" or pull away from the door frame.having purchased a four door model, each door had noticable defects which became significant over a short period of time.#2: upon further investigation through local volvo dealerships, the "bubbles" were actually due to a poor quality environmentally friendly glue from europe, that was used to attach the interior leather door panels to the door frames, which volvo did not apparently test in the united states.as for my model, the consequence of the defect resulted in severe failure of the interior leather door panels.although my model year is a 2000, i understand that this has also happened on both earlier and later model year vehicles.#3: volvo "is" aware of this defect and how extensive it has affected its vehicles including the model year 2000.in speaking with local volvo dealerships, volvo made a subtle attempt to correct the problems including supplying the dealerships with a repair kit that each dealership was responsible for completing.although initially reported to volvo, my complaints were not identified as safety related issues but rather cosmetic and required approximately two years before finally agreeing to a three way split in the cost to replace the interior leather door panels.although the defect is cosmetic in nature, it was to oem parts that volvo installed with the vehicle and not optional upgrades on my part.please help us...
Air-conditionerrepeatedly malfunctioned allowing road exhuast into cab, noxious odors and headaches.
Brought into dealer on numerous occassions in regards to brake pedal hard and brake fade at start up.failure to come to full stop when brake is first applied after car stands overnight or period of time.dealer replaced sealant and fuse on abs sensors, master cylinder and abs pump motor. Dealer replace climate control box because of water runoff through climate box seam.front stablizer link rod was replaced because found to be worn and defective.
Noticed bare wires inside headlight assembly, both sides, when changing bulb. Wrapped wires until i could find a wiring harness. Low beam was worse than high beam. Checked with volvo, tallahassee, fl and they stated there were no recalls concerning headlight (or switch). Recently bought two new wiring harnesses and installed but noticed they were also not correctly insulated (plastic) just like the old ones (16 gage wire with plastic, vs silicon high temp insulation.) also, on inspection, noticed the same harness on my other volvo, a 2002 volvo, had been upgraded to heavy duty wiring with silicon based insulation.dangerous! bare wires could have shorted out headlights at night!have old harness and pictures. Can send/email as required.
2000 volvo s70 (50,000:while changing left low beam headlight, noticed the insulation was flaking off the wires. Inspected the other side. It was worse with major bear sections of wire. Also noted the wire is very thin gage for headlight circuits, especially in such a hot, high use area. High beam ok.checked volvo forums. Found this was a common problem with volvo and a mechanic posted a repair procedure.besides the safety hazard of suddenly losing headlights, flashing of a circuit of this magnitude might have other affects on computer related controls.
The vehicle's turn signal, tail and brake lights are constantly blowing out.the gear shift indicator has failed 3-4 times.problem has occurred at least 5-6 times.dealer is unable to determine cause. Ph
My ets light kept coming on.i had to stop my car in high speed traffic 10-12 times and restart it.a web search reveals that this is a frequent problem with volvo s-70.the car suddenly loses power and will shut off if you continue to drive.
Front and back light bulbs have been replaced, brake lights also.electric windows and electric locks malfunctioned one time but lights continue to fail.

I have a 2000 volvo s70 with the electronic throttle module problem.my car exhibits the classics symptoms already noted in nhtsa's findings.i just want to add my name to the list of complaints that volvo is not doing enough to fix the problem.the volvo dealership i have been taking my car to (in fife, wa) for chronic ets light coming on, car running rough, stalling, etc. Will not replace the electronic throttle module even though the light keeps coming on, the car keep stalling and running rough, and going into limp mode while driving at high speeds.i have asked them if it not the etm then what is it? and they only told me to change the air flow sensor which i did and the problem keeps coming back over and over.i am beyond frustrated and concerned for mine and my children's safety because the car will lose throttle power on the freeway going 60 mph.when are they going to just recall the darn thing.what can i do.i called 1800-volvo customer service and they routed me right back to the same dealership who won't fix anything in the first place!elizabeth larson
The consumer experienced a problem with the throttle body and mass airflow on his 2000 volvo s70.the power steering failed and fluid leaked all over the driveway. The power steering pump and reservoir needed to be replaced. Why driving, the air director fell off the bumper.
2000 volvo s70 4 door, awd, turbo sedan stalled out in traffic, nearly causing a serious accident. Car was on a hill when it happened in upstate new york. Took 6 tries to get it restarted in heavy traffic.
While driving from cleveland to roswell, ga, the electronic throttle control module failed in my 2000 volvo s70. This caused the engine to lose power and the power-steering failed. I had to pull into a parking lot beside the road. The engine completely stopped. After about 30 minutes, i was able to restart it. The local volvo dealer recommended replacing the module at a cost of over $1000. Old part was not returned.
1. Ets light, hesitation, had to press pedal down to floor to get car to move.. Danger of stopping/stalling in traffic3. Replace throttle body $923.00 ,62,492 miles serviced regularly with dealer -- thanks ford.
Well, i've also joined the ets club at about 60,000 miles on my s70, 2000, to the tune of $860 bucks!it happened at the most inopportune time. While cruising south on i-95, june 6th, car started to run like it had water in the gas. After about an hour or so of that, the ets warning light comes on, so i check the owner's manual, and it says to turn off the car, and restart, and if the light comes back on, (you're in deep doo-doo) then head for a volvo dealer.well, it did come back on and about an hour later, the car goes into the "limp-home" mode of about 40 mph.fortunately we were able to "limp" into wilmington, nc, and luckily, parkway volvo was only about one-half mile from the comfort inn, where we crashed for the evening.parkway volvo was able to get to my car the very next day, replaced the ets module, and to date (23 jun 05) the car runs like new.the customer service and technical skill of the service manager (brent wells) are suberb!!!fortunatley, i asked for the old ets unit and have since learned that don wilson might to have it.i'm sending him an email ([email protected]) to see if he still wants them for testing).i'm also filing a complaint and will support a "class action lawsuit" any way possible. It's unbelievable that volvo won't step up to the plate and take responsibility for this "defect"..... Defective unit has these markings:marelli, 110541f2a,00w080201;9188793;65cfm2;ah.0082030.k.note: the box that the new one came is is marked:volvo 8644347 "made in italy"
Ets dash light came on,car began to lose power, would not accelerate.per the directions in the manual, i stopped for a while, restarted. The light did not come on immediately, but after several more minutes on the road, the ets light came on again. I was ona highway in another state with my elderly mother in the car. This was a weekend away to attend a family wedding.i sought the advice of a local car repair who informed me that the problem was computer-based and he could not help me.eventually, the car stalled and had to be towed about 50 miles back to my volvo repair facility. The electronic throttle system was replaced at a cost of $ $1131.60.plus the cost of a car rental for 2 days of $80.43, plus a tow of about $ $255.in addition, the towing procedure pierced the oil pan for an additional cost of about $925.00. So the whole expedition cost me $2,393.!!! the car has only 62,000 miles on it.
2000 volvo s70 glt-se;ets light came on and vehicle lost power on i-10 in heavy traffic.limped in to a volvo dealer.car was inspected by a volvo tech.the throttle body was out of factory specs. He replaced the throttle body assembly and reprogrammed it at a cost of $985.38.not what one would expect from volvo.this event not only was inconvenient but put my family in danger in heavy interstate traffic.volvo should make this right!
I was unable to start the volvo s70 2000 engine at all on 7/2/12 and after checked by technician that the fuel pump was not working and replacement was needed. This problems had occurred many times in the last 6 months, yet i was able to start the engine after several tries. This time, the engine was not started at all even with many tries that the fuel pump replacement is definitely needed and it costs me $732 to fix it on 7/3/12. Based on the volvo recalls history, volvo s70 from 2001 forwards models were recalled. But i wonder why was not for my s70 2000 which had the similar problem. Please instruct and assist on how to received reimbursement from volvo the cost of the fuel replacement since this was the similar problem in the recalls for volvo s70 from 2001 forwards models.
Driving to denver on sunday 10/8/2005 and my car started to miss and jerk severely. There was a lot of traffic behind me going well over 60 mph and no place to pull over. I almost got rear ended. I don't have the money to fix the car as i was told the cost is over $1000. It now does this intermittently so i can drive it part time anyway.
Electronic throttle system in my 2000 volvo s70 needs to be replaced.my volvo stalled in the middle of an intersection, i didn't know why this was happening.2 days later my ets light came on and i did some research about what this was and found out that there is some arbitration going on regarding 98-2001 volvos with this same issue and there is some talk about a recall.i feel that this is very dangerous, and if this were to happen on a busy highway going 65-70 mph and my car stalled, the ramifications could be tremendous.i feel that if there is such a big issue with this particular part on volvos that it should be recalled for the safety of the consumers who have purchased these vehicles.it seems to be the ethical thing that volvo could do.i took my car to the volvo dealership today (8/23/05) and asked them if there was anything being done about this issue and they told me no, that i would have to pay for it out of my own pocket until there was a recall.i had to pay $1200.00 out of my pocket for a defect in a vehicle that should be made good by the company who makes these cars.
Driving on interstate highway, car began to hesitate and stallelectronic throttle control was defective, car became inoperabledealer replaced throttle body and associated parts.
Ets light is on and throttle is erratic. For a day or so turning the key off and on fixed the problem but now it seems to be oncontinuously.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70.the contact stated that in conditions over 100 degrees, the key fob will not unlock the doors to the vehicle.he would have to manually open the doors.when the failure occurs while the contact is sitting in the front seat, he cannot open the rear doors because the rear power door locks also fail.the vehicle was taken to the local dealer and they stated that it was an engineering failure that could not be solved.the current and failure mileages were 74,000.the consumer stated the doorunlocking problem is worse when the sun is shining directly on the door.the automatic unlocking feature within the vehicle located on the front doors or from the key ring will not open the doors.they can only be opened by pulling up theindividual door locking button. Vehicle throttle became unstable, causing the vehicle to not maintain steady acceleration even when the accelerator pedal was in a steady position. Diagnosed as failing throttle position sensor. Volvo refused to repair under extended warranty or recall since the vehicle was 12 months past the expiration of the 10 year, 200,000 mile extended warranty on power train. Volvo failed to notify me of the recall, even though my vehicle has been registered at my current home address since 2006.
Automatic transmission developeda problem: slipping and shuddering during acceleration between 16-20 mph. Thevolvo dealer said transmission was damaged and could not be repaired: they replaced it with a rebuilt volvo trans.warranty was 4 yr, 50,000 mi: trans failed at 3 yr, 9 mo, 56839 mi -thedealer refused to honor warranty or to try to repair existing trans: insisted upon replacement of trans at cost of $3,889.92.the consumer felt that volvo intentionally placed defective automatic transmissions in their vehicles to fail prematurely. *sc
When acceleratingconsumer heard a knocking noise, and vehiclelost acceleration. Consumer contacted dealership about this issue, andmechanicdeterminedthat transmissionfailed.
Dt: the vehicle lost power, theengine lights came on. Had to pull over to the side andrestart the vehicle. Took vehicle to the dealer, whoreplaced the throttle body. Lost power when shifting from third tofourthgear 80% of the time. The stc light comes on at the same time when losingpower. This happenedintermittently. Checked the sensors andlet the dealer know it was happening again .then they said vehicle needed a module. This happened onnovember1, 2004.
While driving 35 mphvehicle completely shutdown without warning. Vehiclewas towed to dealer.dealaer replacedaxle.please give any further details.
2000 volvo s70:snap ring holding axle to transmission broke while driving at low speed. Coasted to stop; towed to repair shop. No other damage.however, shop had 1999 volvo in for same complaint. That driver's axle was damaged when it loosened and had to be replaced.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. The contact stated that the driver's seat belt was completely locked in the retracted position and did not give any slack to secure the driver in the seat. The contact stated that the cylinder would not release the tension to pull it across the contact's body. The contactemailed the manufacturer and was referred to the dealer. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 141,700.
The vehicle was parked on a city street.i entered the vehicle, sat down in the driver side and attempted to pull the seat across my body.i would not move, i began tugging at it and releasing it.i broke the housing off of the seatbelt and i could see inside it was wrapped in a spiral.
The vehicle was involved in a frontal collision and the air bags failed to deploy.the driver side seat belt did not lock andthe consumer hit the steering wheel. Volvo refused to send the consumer an analysis report. *scc
In a front-end collision (of approximately 40 mph), airbag did not deploy, and the drivers seat belt did not lock.
The seat belt (drivers side, shoulder) continues to 'jam' or 'lock' in place and is not available for use.to correct, vehicle must be taken into nearest/local dealership for adjustment and repair.thus far, this has occurred approximately six times over the previous twelve months.additionally, all repairs/labor has been covered under vehicle warranty, however, technicians cannot seem to determine the cause and make final repairs. *nlm
The abs module has failed, causing the vehicle to have loss of power at start. In addition, the brakes do not work at full capacity, causing the vehicle to be unsafe. The speedometer is also inoperative. The failure occurs quite frequently during drive time. Having the part rebuilt.
Dt*: the contact stated the abs and stability control function lights illuminated on the dash intermittently.the abs also engages intermittently at various speeds.the brake pedal pulsates when depressed.the dealership has been informed.
This problem has been from purchase and taken back 5 times tapping and brake pedal being grabbed.
The abs and stc light came on and cruise control became inoperable.it would often reset after turning engine off.after several weeks, the car began to also loose power andit would only runin a higher gear.
Abs control module on many models of volvo are defective and fail around or after about 85000 miles. Although mostly annoying could prevent proper operation of abs during braking and poor braking as a result when not expected. Defects of internal solder connections of connector to pcb on the control module printed circuit board is major contributor. The problem is so wide spread that many internet sites are devoted to the repair of this module since is so common. Since it is so common and a failure is very likely and as a result a reduction of braking efficiency that is expected i would consider this a major issue and a recall should be for this problem.

My car was jerking and stalling without any notice. My wife use to tell me all the time that it was doing that. This went on for a few months or maybe even longer.i decided to drive the car and it never happened with me until i was driving on vacation to n.c. And it just cut off while i was with my family.i had to push the car of the road.i continued to attempt to restart the vehicle.it restarted, and i went to the nearest volvo dealer and had to have the electronic throttle module (etm) replaced.$1014 worth of repairs, from one of the best cars known for safety and reliability in the world and i felt helpless.i know that this is a defect and recall issue and would like to be reimbursed or given credit at a volvo dealership to make up for my loss and just make this matter right.i still have the invoice service receipt with all the information on it.the volvo dealership where the repairs were made was crown volvo in greensboro n.c.thank you for allowing me to make a complaint.hopefully enough people with the same problem can make some key personnelthink about the safety issues and reliability concerns of these vehicles.
Ets light came on and car throttle system was affected.car lost power twice on the highway when travelling at approx 60 mph. Had to pull over to avoid potential accident.repeatedly experienced problems when idling at traffic light. Throttle body was replaced at dealer for over $900.00 and vehicle was 7,000 miles out of warranty.complained to volvo customer service.no help was given.losing a customer!!!
Dt: vehicle stalled/died, and lost power due to throttle body failure.
Dt: the contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. While driving at speed of 25-40 mph vehicle would cut out while idling or slowing down. Then it would lurch forward. The contact would put vehicle in neutral to try and keep this from happening. The vehicle is currently dealer for repairs. This has been going on since august 2005 and has been getting progressively worse. The problem was diagnosed as fluctuating idle due to electronic throttle module failure.
Check engine light came on first week of august '05.had obd ii code read, failure low idle.took car to volvo dealership, diagnostic trouble code ecm-620 idle fault, electronic throttle module is failing.i had the etm replaced.it appears from what i have read that an excessive number of etm's have failed on volvos 1999-2001 model years and are currently under investigation by the nhtsa.i hope that this investigation leads to a recall in which case consumers that have already paid for the repair will be reimbursed by volvo or the dealership where service and payment was made.
Electronic throttle systemin my 2000, volvo s70 went out, and the car surged and limped home. No adverse consequences occurred this time, but the potential for disaster by being stranded on a busy highway or electronic throttle systemmalfunctioning as you pull out into traffic raised many safety concerns.this seemed from my research to be a common problem, and the only option was to carry a cell phone and make sure your insurance covered towing.to make things worse the repairs cost nearly $1000, and could happen again due to the same faulty part being installed a second time.volvo should own up to this and recall all the vehicles with this faulty part.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving the vehicle surged and hesitated. The check engine light and ets lights illuminated.the vehicle was taken to the dealership, but the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the problem.
Dt:the contact stated while drivingin trafficvehicle lost power. The vehicle surged andlost most of the power for about four miles.the vehicle was then turned off.a few minutes later, the vehicle restarted.she took the vehicle to the dealership.the throttle body and a cp valvewere replaced atcontact's expense. This happened a few months before, and the dealer made minor adjustments, but did not fix the vehicle.the contactwas the original owner of the vehicle.
The electronic throttle module on my 2000 volvo s70 malfunctioned causing inability to accelerate.mileage = 61,694.the ets light came on the day prior to the incident.etm was replaced.after the etm module was replaced, the electronic windows would not function.i was informed by the volvo technician that this was a coincidence and not related to the etm replacement.prior to etm replacement, i had no problems with the electronicwindows.last week while i was driving alone in my 2000 s70 volvo, the passenger seat fully reclined on its own.this incident reminded me of a similar scenario one week after purchasing the vehicle. The driver's seat fully reclined without anyone touching the electronic seat control. In december 2000, the turn signals and hazard lights switch was found to be faulty and was replaced under the warranty.then, in may, 2001, the drivers turn signal started blinking rapidly which was replaced under the recall campaign 101a and 101b. This makes me believe my entire vehicle's electronic system was defective from the day i purchased the vehicle.
I just read on your website an action summary regarding "failure of the electronic throttle control module (etm)".i did experienced the same problem in sept. 2003 on my 2000 s70glt.the car suddenly lost power on the highway and slow down.i got honked by so many other drivers when i was trying to pull over to the road side.luckily i did not get hit by any other car.the symptom disappeared after i shut and restarted the engine.when it happened for the second time later during the same week, i decided to drive to the dealer's shop for an emergency checkout.i shut and restarted the engine but still the car is shaking and could not accelerate to normal speed.so, i had to turn on emergency lights and drove very slowly to the dealer's shop.that day i spent $1,111 for them to replace the motor throttle module and it is not covered with manufacturer warranty since the car already has 78k miles on the meter.the problem goes away after the repair.however, since that time it has starting problem from time to time.it always start okay but sometimes the engine speed drop and stop after a few seconds of running.they could not find out what is wrong in the car and it is hard to reproduce the problem when i brought the car to them.the funny thing is that i just had a 105k miles maintenance fully tuned at the dealer's shop two weeks ago and they said the checking and maintenance went well and the car runs nicely.in this morning it happened again when i was rushed to work.i got stuck at my garage for 15 minutes before i finally started the engine.i suspect these symptoms are still related to this etm defect.
Theelectronic throttle system (ets)light has been ondashboard intermittently since a 50,000 miles. The car currently has nearly 95,000 miles. On numerous occasions the tachometerreached into the red line when cranked without any use of the accelerator. In traffic, when beginning to coast at cruising speeds, the car will surge slightly without the help of the accelerator.the ets light will appear and then the problem will cease. Took the vehicle to don beyer volvo-dulles on january 18, 2005,and after being told the warranty on the throttle module was extended, the dealer refused to fix the problemstating the appropriate codes were not evident. However, the service representative said the throttle body needed to be cleaned, and that the unit would eventually fail. He said that when the unit failed, defined by him as the car failing to start or stalling while driving, the dealer would then replace it. Until then would have to wait for the unit to fail, putting myself and passengers in danger of the car malfunctioning in traffic.
Dt:2000 volvo s70 se. While driving 70-75 mph vehicle bucked and lost cruise control.the vehicle slowed down very quickly and would not regain speed.each time the vehicle was stopped at a light the consumer had to put it in neutral and keep her foot on the gas pedal to keep it from stalling.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and was informed that the electronic throttle module was defective and needed to be replaced.
Reference 10130593, second vehicle listed, stalled in an intersection, life threatening issue, throttle body fault code. Dealer recommended replacing unit, consumer did not have done because dealer could not guarantee it. Same part put in as failed part. Also, had failure on s80.
2000 s70 volvo. Consumer writes in regards to electronic throttle and vehicle speed *tgwthe consumer stated the ets light illuminated as the vehicle was accelerating by itself and then went into limp mode.the vehicle was towed to a repair shop where the throttle body was replaced. Also, a software upgrade was needed, because the vehicle would not start.
I own a 2000 volvo s70 and the throttle modulator (?) failed and had to be replaced at just over the 100k mile mark.the car is serviced regularly and not mishandled.i felt volvo should have replaced this part without cost to me.however, they did not and it cost me almost $1,000 for the repairs.i have a friend who had the same problem with her volvo and she gave me this web site.hence my complaint.
Etc failure on a 2000 volvo s70 ( see action #peo5041).
Car was stalling, slowing down and stopping.running rough and lurching forward after it had been stalled for a few seconds.the check engine light was on and the etm failed on my 2000 s70.the etm was replaced twice on this vehicle but it required 4 trips to the dealer both times before they would replace the etm.each time they tried to fix it with out incurring any costs to them and the car would fail within less that week until they changed the etm.
Purchased vehicle used several weeks ago.while performing fine during test drive, within hours vehicle developed issue where it attempts to surge forward while braking (at stop light, in driveway, etc.) which has almost caused numerous accidents.other times, when pressing the gas pedal, the car hesitates and almost stalls before accelerating, causing dangerous conditions at highway speeds.brakes inspected and are perfect as is fuel pump, fuel injectors, engine, etc.; mechanic suggested that this is related to a recall volvo issued in 2006 regarding the electronic throttle module.volvo informed me that it is no longer honoring this recall.
Volvo s70, 2000throttle body failure.car would not accelerate properly, lost some power when stopping or turning, finally check engine light came on.dealership charged us $1100.check engine light came one again the next day.that is today, i am taking it back to volvo tomorrow and riaising heck to have his replaced for free.
While driving my volvo s70 2000 westbound on i-90 just past the gary , inexit 10, during the morning rush hour, the car lost power and would not accelerate faster than 30 mph.between exit 10 and the next exit 5 the road is elevated there is no usable shoulder.as a result for 5 miles i drove at 30 mph while cars and trucks approached me from behind at 55-75 mph.numerous cars and trucks had to slam on their brakes to avoid rear ending me and one truck started to jackknife.i finally made it to the exit 5 and called for a tow truck.the dealer replaced the electronic throttle module at the cost of over $1,000.00.i was incredibly fortunate that i was not injured or killed and that i did not cause an accident.i happened to be driving the car to the dealer to a service appointment that morning because the ets dashboard warning light had lit up. When i described the problem to the dealer the week before i was not informed that i could lose power like that .indeed when arrived by tow truck at the dealer the service person told me that the etm problem did not make the car unsafe to drivebut that "you just have to know how to drive it that way.".the dealer is about 60 miles from my home.all the volvo safety features wouldn't have done me a lick of good if a semi had plowed into me at 55 mph or more.this sudden loss of power problem utterly compromises the volvo safety features.so instead of taking the volvo on a cross-country trip this summer we rented a van.i urge that this part be recall and more importantly in the meantime, make volvo contact car owners and tell them that if the ets light comes on the car is unsafe to drive at highway speeds.
Unexplained, involuntary acceleration from low speed.2000 volvo model s70 passenger car, awd. During a slow-speed turn the vehicle accelerated at full throttle.impact with residential structure severed a wheel and bent the front frame 90 degrees.what happened:during a slow turn into a neighbors driveway, speed about 5 mph, turning right, touching the accelerator, the car engine accelerated at full speed.despite foot fully into the brake the car continued to accelerate 40-50 feet until impacting the foundation of the house.speed a time of impact 40+ mph.tried to turn off ignition but hit house first.considerable damage to house and car, which was totaled by the insurance company.reported throttle acceleration problem to volvo in new jersey, they stated no such previous complaints about unexplained acceleration.knew of the nhtsa research into accelerator module slowing unexplained to 5 mph, but then saw a news report about unexplained acceleration and wanted to include this case in your list.
Dt: vehicle stalled/died, and operated poorly due to electronic throttle module failure.
Leading up to the incident my car would stall or lose power.while driving on a very busy rte 202 my car lost power in the left hand lane. It the completely died and would not start.i then had it towed to the closest mechanic (francis automotive in west chester, pa).it was diagnosed as having a bad vehicle speed control which cost in excess of $1000 to fix.after talking to other volvo owners about this i found that it very common.in addition to this i have a problem with the air condition which stops working at inappropriate times.ai have also found that this common with 2000 s70's.i bought this car on volvo's past quality reputation.turns out it was the big mistake i should have stuck with a nissan or toyota!
Dt: vehicle stalled/died and lost power. Dealer replaced the throttle body.
2000 s70 stalls after applying brakes. The vehicle has been taken tot he dealer several times but the technicians were unable to determine the cause of the stalling.the consumer did some research and found some information on faulty electronic throttle module in volvos which cause stalling.
Dt: vehicle stalled and lost power due to electronic throttle failure. I twould cost $1000.00 to replace it.
**approx. Incident date is actually ongoing for past four years.***i have a 2000 volvo s70 which i purchased new in may 2000 from volvo athens, ga. Dealer.i currently have 190,000+ miles.over the past eight years i have owned the vehicle i have had consistent problems with the etm situation.at first, being new to volvo cars and repair situations, volvo denied the etm problem and stuck it on me to be repaired in nov. 2004.not until i described my issues with engine failure to an independent mechanic, was i warned about the ongoing problems in my model vehicle.since my initial repair i have encountered four other time periods when the same etm situation begins occurring, typically 20-30,000 mile intervals since the lasts service of the specific etm defect.now, i am on my fourth trip in four years to the local dealer to once again have the etm situation repaired.i am at 190,000 miles and according to the manufacturer "extended warranty" on this problem, my ability to have this ongoing safety issue fixed at manufacturer costs will cease in approximately 10,000 miles.clearly this safety defect has been an issue with my model car since its manufacture by volvo and to date no effective remedy has been found.i feel this issue is a major safety defect as my car will stall or hesitate then surge at any given moment thus causing a potential traffic accident involving not only myself, but my passengers, and potentially other drivers on the road.i am sick and tired of volvo not taking more responsibility for this issue and finding a solution to the problem, not just a stop gap measure to appease nhtsa.i have never been contacted by nhtsa regarding this issue despite my ongoing complaints to my local volvo dealer as well as the manufacturer service center.it appears from documentation on this website that nhtsa has gathered, or attempted to gather, complaints on volvo etm matter and i want to be included in such complaints.
My 2000 volvo s70 se looses speed and the ets light comes on. I was driving about 60 km/h in traffic and the car almost stalled without warning... I had to quickly stop on the side of the road (not fun!). I turned the ignition off for few minutes and the problems disappeared. Got home - told my wife what happened and she told me same happened with her about a month or more ago - but she forgot to mention this to me before (typical - hahaha). Anyway.. This problem is a safety issue and need volvo to fix before me or my family gets hurt...
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70.while driving 65 mph, the vehicle decelerated to 15 mph (at the lowest).the contact frequently noticed the failure and also observed that the tachometer would fluctuate up and down.she took the vehicle to a mechanic, who retrieved an error code and referred her to the dealer.the dealer retrieved the failure code for the throttle positioning sensor.the contact was informed of nhtsa campaign id number 06v441000 (vehicle speed control).she consulted six different dealers and they all stated that the parts needed for the repair were on backorder for approximately six weeks.the closest dealer informed her that they have yet to receive parts, even after the six week deadline.the manufacturer could not provide any additional information.the current mileage was approximately 90,000 and failure mileage was approximately 40,000.updated 10/03/08 the consumer stated the vehicle hesitated during acceleration and decleration at highway speeds. Upated 10/07/08.
Dt: the consumer stated that2000 volvo s70 had to have the electronicthrottle control module (etcm ) replaced on august 1, 2005 whiledriving at 65 mph. The etcmlight came on, and the vehicle stalled. Theconsumer had to turn the car off and restart it.before the consumer could get help the car stalled about 6 or 7 times. They hadthe vehicle towed to a volvo dealer. The dealer said itwas the etcm and it was destroyed. The volvo dealer replaced the etcm, and updated the software for theconsumer. The car was running better after the replacement module.this was the only time that the carhad this problem. The consumer contacted the manufacturer and was advised to callnhtsa and file a complaint.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. The contact stated when braking and then attempting to accelerate, the vehicle would sporadically lunge forward or there would be limited acceleration power. The etf throttle warning light would illuminate when the failure occurred. The dealer advised that they were unable to assist the contact due to the age of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were approximately 93,000.
Car was stalling, slowing down and stopping.it was lurching forward when i stepped on the throttle almost causing an accident.the etm has been replaced once on this vehicle.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle began to lunge forward. The contact applied the emergency brake to stop the vehicle and the electronic throttle system light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to an auto repair shop. The mechanic stated that the actuator, the electronic throttle and housing would have to be replaced. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 06v441000 (vehicle speed control), that may be related to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 121,000.
Speed control. Have had a variety of speed/engine control problems.engine would die.engine would cause "bucking".engine would not accelerate.throttle body and air mass meter replaced.throttle body covered by warranty but i had to pay for air mass meter replacement.current problem traveling @ 55 to 60 mph press on accelerator and car will not accelerate but will slow down with rpms hesitating at 5000 and 4500 without accelerating.car slows down, loses power. This occurs usually under a hill climbing situation but has occurred on flat terrain.in hill climbing once more gradual slope reached, car accelerates.updated 01/03/06.
Dt: contact's wife was driving on the interstate andvehicle speed slowed down to almost no speed at all. She was able to get the vehicle off the ramp. The vehicle was taken to volvo dealership in june of 2005 to be checked. He was told at that time the throttle body needed to be cleaned. The vehicleran fine until september, 22,005. This time the vehicle was taken to a volvo mechanic, the throttle body was replaced at this time. The vehicle was under warranty at that time .then onnovember 12, 2005 he was pulling out of a parking place and the throttle body went out again. This, in turn, almost caused a serious accident. On november 14, 2005 he took the car back to the mechanic and he was told that the throttle body that was replaced in september2005 was defective from volvo. The vehicle is now at a repair shop having the throttle body replaced again. The vehicle is no longer under warranty.updated 12/16/2005.
Throttle body was defective. Vehiclewill not accelerate.dealer stated throttle needed to be cleaned.the faulty throttle module caused the vehicle to stall and sometimes made it impossible to maintain a constant speed.
Repeated failure and replacement of electronic throttle management system.since the most recent replacement 3 months ago, the car has stuttered when rounding tighter corners.now, the car stalls on tight corners, causing a loss of power steering and brakes leading to a loss of vehicle control.a crash was avoided by nearby vehicles when the car stalled mid corner, sending the car and driver into the opposite lane.the dealer/manufacturer continues to offer replacement, but the replacements quickly wear causing similar results.
Volvo 2000 s70 66,000 miles vehicle speed controlafter a trip of 300+ miles ets light and check engine light came on and vehicle went into "limp-home" mode [20 mph]vehicle was towed 100 miles to nearest dealer etm [electronic throttle module] tested failed and was replaced by dealer on 10/30/2005 old part not available.
2000 volvo s 70 stalls without warning. Mechanic was unable to fix the problem even after two tries following the recall of the electronic throttle system.the vehicle losses power at unexpected moments, like when the car approaches turns, which causes the power steering to fail as well.
Ignition coil is misfiring, and park neutral position switch also known as the transmission position switch or neutral safety switch is having issues. When its idling its really rough while driving the car jolts an hiccups. Doesn't know what gear it's going into
2000 volvo s70needed a throttle body module installed. I understand this vehicle has had a number of complaints about tis module. I also understand that california is asking volvo to either have a recall or extend the warranty.
Here's what happened to us: we (my wife, three year old son and i) were driving our 2000 volvo s70 sedan down interstate 95 from washington dc to north carolina. In virginia, the electronic throttle system (ets) sensor came on. We stopped, like the manual suggested, restarted the car and the light went out. Midway through virginia, the ets light and check engine light came on simultaneously. We stopped and again stopped the engine. Upon restart, the ets light went off, but not the check engine light. This took place the whole trip down i-95. We made it home, but don't feel comfortable driving our three year old around. The vehicle started to lose speed when the sensor came on.we stopped almost immediately every time, which is no great thrill when you are driving on an interstate.when the cruise control was set, the light came on, kicked off the cruise control and began to shake and shimmer.we stopped about ten times during a 150 miles trip.
The ets system on my 2000 volvo s70 is failing.the dealer is telling me that this will cost $1000 to fix.my car only has 62,000 miles on it, and is now stalling in traffic due to the etb needing to be replaced.this is a serious matter and could cause injury while driving.my car stalled in traffic the other day and i fearful to drive it on the highway or when crossing an intersection.volvo needs to send a recall out on this vehicle.
Dt: the contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. While driving on the interstate at 55-70 mph the vehicle stalled and the electronic throttle module light (etm) illuminated. The electronic throttle module had failed causing the vehicle to stall/die and lose power. *mr
While driving 40 mph the ets (electronic throttle system) light illuminated on the consumer's 2000 volvo v70xc.the vehicle started losing power then came to a stop.the manufacturer was contacted but didn't seem to be concerned and refused to cover the cost to repair the vehicle.
The abs and stc light came on and cruise control became inoperable.it would often reset after turning engine off.after several weeks, the car began to also loose power andit would only runin a higher gear.
Failed throttle module.
At approx. 80k miles, my 2000 volvo s70 computer system began returning a check engine light along with a ets light on several incidents.when those warning lights were on, the engine would not hold a steady curb idle. Rpms wavered from 500 to 1500 and caused a dangerous surging at stop signs and stop lights. Checking the owners manual on the ets light, it said to turn the engine off then back on, if the light went out-fine. If not, go to the dealer.the incidence this happening got more and more frequest until finally the ets light would not go out and the car could not be safely driven. Researching on the internet, i found that it was a common problem with the etm or electronic throttle module, on this make and model year and that the onlythe dealer could replace it.so, i went to the dealer and had them replace the etm on aug 19, 2005 at theexcessive cost of $917.91. (it was less expensive than an accident.)even though i have not experienced the problem since, i expect that the problem will reoccur some 50 to 80k miles in the future since the defective part was just replaced with a new part with the same flawed design. I feel that volvo should recall this part immediately and make reparations to those of us who have had to have it replaced. I feel that they knew that the part was flawed at the time of manufacture. Why else would their owner's manual explain the ets error and the temporary fix like it does?the "turn the engine off" fix just postpones the repair until after the warranted mileage has past.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70.in 2006, the contact took the vehicle to the dealer to be repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 06v441000 (vehicle speed control).the repair did not correct the failure.the contact will notify the manufacturer.the failure mileage was 78,447 and current mileage was 98,000.
2000 volvo s70 would like reimbursement for bad repairs. He had repairs and a recall repair done that were not done properly and would like to be reimbursed for the bad repairs.
2000 volvo s70 etm issuesvehicle lunges, has almost caused accident, safety issue.
The ets warning light went on two different days leading to my calling my volvo dealer. I was told i must replace my electronic throttle module because not replacing it could lead to failure of the throttle and could lead to an accident. I had to pay $971 on october 22 to have my dealer replace the module as the car was just past its warranty.
At 45000 miles consumer replaced the throttle unit on 2000 volvo s 70.the manufacturer reimbursed the consumer for replacing the defective throttle unit.the did not reimburse the consumer for the labor and tax paid to install the new unit.
The contact owns a 2000 volvo s70. While driving at 30 mph, thevehicle lost power and stalled. The contact moved the vehicle off the roadway and allowed it to sit for five minutes before restarting. The vehicle continued normal operation and was taken to a local mechanic where he was advised of a recall relating to the failure. The contact confirmed that nhtsa recall campaign id number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control) repairs had previously been performed on the vehicle and he had been experiencing the failure since. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 115,000.
Electronic throttle system (ets) dash light illuminated.engine speed electronically automatically cut back from 30 mph and held to approx 10 mph.i could not accerlate.acceleration restrained like there was a governor on the engine.followed owners manual instruction.4 times car turned off and on and light stayed on.let car sit one hour.throttle system returned to normal after waiting one hour before restarting.problem not reoccurred for 2 days now.contacted dealer--no clue as too problem.related to current tsb regarding throttle system.
Vehicle exhibits "hesitation and stuttering" during both acceleration and maintaining steady speed. Ets warning light has appeared and then reset twice. Tune-up and fuel changes were tested with no change in issue. Ets warning light and on-board diagnostics indicated electronic throttle module failure and required replacement. I have the old part and the diagnostic printouts. After researching this issue, it appears that this is a common and premature failure item on volvo cars from 1999 thru 2001 model years. Since this is a critical sfaety component that can fail without notice (at the worst possible time), it should be as reliable as other critical componeents such as the abs or srs/airbag systems. This does not appear to be the case.
I own a 2000 volvo s70 and amwas experiencing rpm surging.itook the car to an independent volvo repair specialist, southwest automotive, who identified the cause of the surging as an electronic throttle moduleproblem, and that i should take the car to a volvo dealership.i took the car to a dealership, volvo of richardson, who informed me that the etm had been replaced under volvo?s warranty, and that the software had been upgraded. Volvo of richardson recommended a replacement of the transmission.i do not believe that the power surging is caused by the transmission. I am of the belief that a software upgrade has lowered the trigger points that are supposed to provide a diagnostic code that would indicate a malfunctioning electronic throttle module. In this case, the parameters have been reconfigured so low as to not present a code that would identify the problem is etm, even when surging is present to the extent of visually watching the tachometer move by 50 to 100 rpm's during steady to minor acceleration.since modifying the software parameters does not fix a power surge issue, then logic would indicate that the modification is an attempt to hide failures in a methodology that volvo is not being damned by the car?s own diagnostic system! in this case, volvo is denying the existence of an issue by the simple expedient of not reporting them. If factual, this action proves intentional fraud. The only result is a longer time to replacement at final etm failure. Which i suspect volvo is hoping will be after the warranty extension, to volvo?s illicit benefit.i suspect that the result of this throttle surging behavior is (1) a safety issue, (2) causes premature wear and stress on the vehicle, (3) produces lower fuel mileage and the change in software has produced an unanticipated consequence of putting volvo dealers in a position of exploiting volvo owners into repair costs that are not necessary through simple misidentification or fraud.
Vehicle surging forward without accelerator inputroads wet, but not frozen (luckily).on making turn in residential neighborhood, volvo s70 surged without accelerator input requiring driver to take corrective action and brake hard.in 2005, this vehicle experienced engine stall, vehicle hesitation upon acceleration.vehicle hesitation was consistent at approximately 2100 rpm at freeway speeds.on taking it to the dealer they reprogrammed the etm.after this repair, within days, the veehicle experienced and sudden and unexpected transition into reduced performance operation (limp mode) while driving on the pa turnpike.dealer instructed us to bring car in where they installed a new etm and reprogrammed it with the new software upgrade.after further negotiations with the dealer, the cost of these repairs were reimbursed by the dealer in an agreement with volvo (so-called secret warranty). Note that this occured prior to the settlement in california.volvo would refer me only to the dealer, and would not discuss the possible problemn with me.i believe that we have previously had the etm cleaned when we had similar problems in the past.the current surging and hesitation at freeway speeds (2000-2200 rpm) and the surging with accelerator inputs are happening with the new etm that is only about four months old in the vehicle.

(safety issue) while driving on the highway, the plastic sun roof air deflector shattered and pieces of the air deflector ended up on the highway possibly hitting other vehicles.there are no signs of the air deflector being hit by any type of object.it just appeared to crack in the center and the center section came off.both ends of the deflector were still attached to the vehicle.i did report this incident to volvo, but they did not seem concerned about it and would not let me know if this was a recurring incident.
Drivers window went down and is nonoperational in the down position. Most likely a switch.
