No deployment of air bags during vehicle collision.

Consumer was sitting in the vehicle, and the passager's side air bag deployed for no reason.

Consumer was sitting still at a light & was struck from the front toward the middle toright passenger side. Consumer has frontal & side airbags which didn't deploy.manufacturer has been contacted & they said that consumer will have to be responsible for payment.

While driving consumer's vehicle was hit by another driver while making a left turn.other vehicle hit the passenger side rear bumper, and caused consumer to hit a tree.then, bounced off into a retaining wall which stopped the car. Windows were busted out the whole right side of the vehicle whichwas damaged, and neither airbag deployed.

Air bags have been inoperative since purchase (warning light on) despite numerous repair attempts.vehicle was in some sort of accident prior to sale by volvo.this may have permanently disabled the air bag system.

I was traveling about 15 mph through a green light.and coming from my left a 1988 chevy s-10 wentthrough a red light at about 30mph.i had no time to reach for the brakes, and i rammed into the passenger side of the s10 . The whole front end of the volvo was smashed .ifi'm told you need a head-on collision for deployment of air bags.o.k. If the whole front end is gone why didn't the air bags work.thank you for your time.

While driving had no frontal impacts, however, driver's and passenger's airbags deployed, causing an accident and injuries without any warning.the side airbags did not deploy.please provide further information.currently being investigated in germany.

Faulty dash clips that retain the dashboard to the firewall. I was told by the lead technican at bob pinkus volvo in colorado springs, co that this was a known defect. The clips break leading to a squeeky dash that volvo is not willing to address out of warranty. I now have no confidence in dirving this car as i do not know when the dash will seperate, if in an accident, and severly injure either myself or a member of my family.

Vehicle was invovled in an accident at 30-35 mph; head on collision. Upon impact, both air bags failed to deploy. Can nhtsa provide additional information .

The driver's side airbag did not deploy even though the car was hit on the side. Contacted volvo and asked to inspect. Their answer was that everything was ok. I asked for a report with all the engineering data and supporting documents to show why it was ok, no response, have asked twice. They say everything is ok. I think there is a problem and they are hiding the truth. The side air bag should have deployed to give extra protection. I was not satisfied with their answer and i do need you help.*scc

Possible electrical system failure, several times the following fail:all headlights, brake lights, and the gear shift selector bulb.

Dt: the vehicle was losing power, it shuts down. Usually it will start back.can cut across traffic, and it will just stall. Took it to the dealer many times, and they could not duplicate the problem. Theyput different parts on it to narrow down the problem. There is no power steering after it stalls. Back in january the turbo went it out and they replaced it. The vehicle was still skipping. This started happening around january 15, 2005. The abs control module was replaced.

Vehicle is experiencing problems with the headlights, signals, speakers, and tail lights going out several times, possibly due to an electrical problem, the battery failed.

Shortly after purchase car started "bucking/ would feel a lunging forward while driving at high speeds or while idling at stop signs. Complained to dealer was told "they know about the problem" - it is a software problem i was not informed of this prior to purchase. Said volvo is aware of the problem and their working on it. It is my understanding a computer chip is defective and it is firing fuel into the injectors randomly.i asked if this is dangerous, could this cause a fire, etc. And was told no.i have taken the car in twice and had this problem documented and they have done nothing.it has not improved, only become more frequent.the car surges when at stop signs, it feels like another car has bumped into me.this also occurs when driving at high speeds. I purchase this car "new" and was not advised of this problem.if i had known this i would not have bought car. Also whether the car is in drive or park, this surging occurs. Also a few weeks after i purchased car the o'ring cracked and oil and transaxle grease was leaking out, unbeknownst to me immediatley.when i tookit in was advised the ring had not been installed properly at the factory and it had broken. I asked since all that fluid leaked out has any damage been done or would this affect the performance in the future, was advised no.this car is a lemon. Please help me.

Erratic transient chemical fumes in passenger compartment, smells like hot plastic, dealer has not been able to replicate, however radio replaced twice, antenna motor replaced twice, sixteen bulbs (some with sockets) replaced since 6/98, all possibly related to overall electrical system problems. *cj

Electrical s.a.s. Relay causing engine cooling fan to stay on.

I purchased this car used december 16 2016 knowing it needed a lot of work. I have since gotten all the repairs done on jan 4th 2017. I now need to get the car emission tested after driving 200 miles the readiness monitors are still not set and have since repaired the check engine light and still can not get an emissions test.

Abs/tracs failure.

Engine stalled leaving me stranded in an intersection in rush hour traffic. Engine would not restart. Police officer had to push me off the street because car would not restart. Dealer still has not identified the problem.

This car has a hx of electrical problems.as you can see, both headlights have burned out(at night) as have the brake lights.the left turn signal operated at a different sequence than the right one.we have information that these light failures are somewhat common with this model..our safety concerns are obvious.th e manufacturer has not proposed any solutions other than replacement of the bulbs.this is not satisfactory as there is apparently a major electrical problem.

98 volvo s70; experiencing a loss of power and stalling; i've had two mechanics look at my vehicle and no one can pin point the problem.i went to my local dealership, dick dyer volvo on august 2nd and they can not look at my car until august 19th.as a mother of a young child, it is frightening to pull out into heavy traffic.i emailed corporate volvo on 8/3/05 and haven't received a response. This had been a recurring problem since feb 05; about every 1-2 weeks my car will stall when i begin to slow down at a light.

I purchased a 1998 s70 volvo from suburban volvo in troy michigan.i took the car in for repairs for the air conditioning before the warranty expired.i was told to return if the a/c leaked.i was looking for a physical leak, which i later found out there is no physical indiciation of a problem.i returned the car on two more occassions to the dealership for the same problem.after the warranty expired, i was told that the a/c had a leak and i had to pay $1,400 to have repaired.i explained to the suburban dealer that i felt i should not have to pay for the repairs because the car was sold to me with a leak.to further add to the story, i had taken the car in to be repaired for a recall on the lights.i am not sure if the recall was for the headlights or tailights.while in the shop, i inquired about the headlight wipers not working.i was told i needed to purchase a headlight motor at a cost of about 4 or 5 hundred dollars because the car had been in an accident.i was told no it had not been in an accident.ifound out later (after the tire rod broke while being driven) that the tire rod had been damaged in an accident.i had repaired at a cost of 800.00 which i paid.is there any type of relief for me since the car had been in an accident prior to me purchasing the vehicle?the a/c is not working, the check engine light constantly comes on, the driver side window doesnt work at all, the headlight wipers don't work at all.the a/c and headlight wipers have never worked properly since i purchased in february 2001.i have written the owner of the dealership and volvo of north america (vna).the dealership never responded.volvo of north america did respond and told me there was nothing they could do.vna shared i had to work it out with the dealership. Have been reading that the check engine is an ongoing problem with some volvos.the electrical system is presenting problems also.do i have any recourse after owning the car since 2001?

1. 12/23/97: car died in slow freeway traffic; restarted after 5 minutes, but "check engine light" stayed on. Diagnosed as problem with air mass sensor, which was replaced. 2. 11/11/98: right rear door lock failed; motor replaced. 3. Each of front headlight bulbs burned out with less than 15k in mileage. 4. 1/13/99: rt and lt outer tail lights burned out; bulbs were replaced. 5. 3/3/99: right turn signal began flashing too quickly; both rt and lt turn signal sockets were replaced. 6. 4/28/99: tailights again failed, sockets and bulbs were replaced; 7. 4/29/99: left turn signal flashing too quickly (even though socket had been previously replaced on 3/3/99 to deal with anticipated corrusion problem). My wife and i have have had more service problems with this car than in 25 years of owning all of our other cars combined.

When the vehicle was being driven, the abs light illuminated.the vehicle has had this problem more than three times in the last three weeks.there was a technical service bulletin concerning this problem.the warning lights indicated a problem with the abs and the 4 tracking system.the consumer suggested that this might nothave been valid due to a possible defect in the electrical module. *sc

Over maximum "30" second period, vehicle bucked, then interior lights came on and began blinking, then throttle stuck in "full" position, then brakes failed completely while black smoke emerged from under hood and wheel wells, then flames visible from from grill over hood of car, then vehicle finally brought to stop using emergency brakes at which time flames were two-three feet high from grill and wheel well(s) area of car - exited immediately - car total loss ..... Have since been made aware of "another" '98 s70 fire with very similar sequence of failure events and result - volvo contacted and claims evidence of animal nest under hood (assistance denied) - cinncinati insurance (my carrier) hired & conducted professional/independent fire investigation with results pending ...... Have full set of photos - general comment: if there were an elderly person, diabled person or child strapped in childseat riding in vehicle, unable to react/move so quickly, results could have been catastrophic!!!!!

Windows and sunroof failures due to short in circuit breaker, multiple light failures, windshield wiper fluid indicator light always on despite replacement of fluid, light failure indicator lighted then stops.

At time of fire, dash board indicator lights were on for light out and that car was in low gear, but car was not being driven in low gear. Additionally, air conditioner was on.no iindicator lights were on to indicate any other problems such as engine was overheated or low in any fluids.i attempted to shift through low gears to remove low gear indicator light, but that did not do anything.i put car in park and turned off the engine.when i turned engine back on, at first the low gear indicator light did not come back on, but within ashort distance the low gear indicator light came back on even though car was being driven in normal drive gear and no feeling thatcar was actually in a low gear.

I am aware of 2 other people who own this same vehicle (yr. Make and model).all have the same part that has gone bad in the last month.the 2 dealers i've contacted say that there is a long waiting list for this part!you're just supposed to drive the car until they can get it (not knowing if you have abs or not i supposed)!also another deceptive/dangerous part of this problem is that the dash board warning lights are inconsistant.on some trips it comes on and on others it doesn't.it never stays on.you'll never know if you should pump the brakes in an emergency or not!

Dt*: the contact stated the abs and traction control lights on the dash illuminated causing both components to be inoperable.this occurred intermittently.the vehicle was driven to the dealer who determined both systems needed to be replaced. Updated 10/31/2006 -

The plastic handle of the oil dipstick came off causing half of the oil dipstick to be in the dipstick tube the car was not moving it happened while checking the oil level making sure there was oil in the car making sure that the engine will not seize while driving

While driving down i-85 s. On 12/30/04 in my 1998 volvo s-70 the tensioner wheel exploded causing the timing belt to disengage from the engine thus loosing all engine power at 70 mph without warning and doing over 2000.oo dollars worth ofengine damage.from examination of the defective part, the goove guides just shattered leaving no grooves for belt guidance.

Failure of cam belt adjuster, at speed with no warning and total loss of engine power and ancillary equipment.

Consumer 1998 s70 engine has failed on two different occasions, timing belt serpentine belt has been replaced. ***nar*** the consumer believed this was a premature failure.the water pump was leaking.the front spring seat was replaced.

Radiator sits a mere 5 inches above ground and 1 1/2 inches below front bumper, on 11/12/00 while pulling into a parking space, front bumper eclisped curb by 10 to 12 inches, at which point curbing contacted bottom of radiator, radiator lost all fluid, under carriage of newer model volvos has a shield which protects radiator.cj

I have a 1998 volvo s70 with about 88k miles on it.i had a lot of work done on it dec 20, 2006 including replacing the timing belt.on 2/15, we were driving and the engine suddenly stopped - we lost power steering and braking, etc.we managed to slow the car and get into a parking lot and had the car towed to the dealer, jordan volvo in mishawaka, in.we found that the tensioner had failed causing the timing belt to slip off and cause what appears to be very material (retail around $4k) worth of damage to the engine.volvo recommends replacing the tensioner at 105k miles i believe, but i have found numerous cases on message boards of people having their timing belt but not tensioner replaced and then having catastrophic engine damage.we are fortunate that we were not on a highway when this happened, or along side the road (it was probably 5 degrees out).the dealership has offered to repair the car at 1/2 price, but maintain that they followed volvo's procedures.i called my old mechanic in chicago and he said that 90% of the time he replaces the tensioner to avoid just what happened to me.we were not even warned of the possibility of this happening nor given the option to decline the service.

Engine stalled leaving me stranded in an intersection in rush hour traffic. Engine would not restart. Police officer had to push me off the street because car would not restart. Dealer still has not identified the problem.

Replaced timing belt at 76,000 mi. Per volvo maintenance schedule. At 107,000 mi. Timing belt tensioner and pulley failure resulting in timing belt slipping off and causing massive valve damage. Thankfully, volvo of na service stepped up as did darell waltrip volvo and helped to cover over half of the $4,600 in damage that was caused. Still i was stuck with a $2,000 unexpected repair bill.attention - 1998 volvo s70 owners and all interference engine owners with timing belts note replace your tensioners and pulleys when you replace the belt.

1998 volvo s70 lost power then stalled multiple times (9) while driving approximately july 27, 2005 . I am concerned about danger of stalling in traffic and getting rear ended or if stalls in intersection. Or being stranded.was able to get it to the dealer. They found "failing mass air flow sensor". They replaced it and it runs fine now. Old part is not available. But service and repair cost $369.20.i noticed that there are other s70 owners with this problem on mycarstats.com and an article in caranddriver.com.

Upon accelerating up the hill of my street, today, august 16th, 2011, my car, a 1998 volvo s70 , sped up, unnaturally, close to the top . I had just driven out of my driveway, as i back into it always, and proceeded up the hill. As usual, the automatic transmission shifted down as the car approached a steeper portion of the hill. When braking for the stop sign at the top, i noticed that the engine was racing. I was unable to stop fully at the stop sign, and after going around the corner to the right, i pulled the floor mat away from the accelerator pedal. My left foot wasnow firmly planted on the brake pedal, as well as my right foot quickly pumpingthe accelerator pedal, allin an attempt tohave the gas pedal unstuck, which it didn't. Itjust madethe car engine continuously race even more. The rpm'sincreasedalso the more that the engine raced. Unable to fully stop at the next subsequent 2 stop signs, on a straight away, and my left foot to the floor with the brake pedal, i finally decided to place the car in neutral, the engineracingat what seemed a very high rate of speed by evidence of thoserpm's.i continued to pump the gas pedal, with the carin neutral, my left foot on the brake, when suddenly the racing ceased, and the rpm's came down to an idle, just below 1000, i believe. I then proceeded to the side of the road, and stopped. After a bit, iplaced the car from neutral into park, and then again shifted the automatic transmission into drive. Ibegan moving down a hill by mere idling speed. I was careful, just coasting now, not to initially place any pressure on the accelerator as i proceeded in drive. I came to a stop at anintersection, for a red signal light, and when it was green, i drove back around a large city block to my driveway. Ibacked into my driveway with no further issues of sudden acceleration during the final distance driven. This has happened 2 other times recently when setting cruise control going up a hill.

I purchased the car jan.26 2001. Two days later i had it in for repeated oil leaks. Dealer stated they were unable to locate any leaks.also the headlight was out, the foglight was out, the car had mismatched tires, the fuel cap was not attached properly and was tied on with a wire. A month later the o2 sensor went out in the car and was also making a winding noise. Dealer came out and told me that the hub was bad and needed to be replaced. The car continued to have oil leaks. Dealer stated they could not find anythihg. Approx. 1 month later the rear passenger window switch went out.the air guide was also replaced on the car. Oil continued to leak. I took it to an outside source an dthey were able to find three oil leaks in a matter of two hours. They reccomended the turbo unit be replaced that it was bad. On vacation this summer the check engine light once more cam on and dealer stated a fuel gasket needed replacing. August this year the fan began to make a noise. I took it to the dealer and was told they could not get it to duplicate the noise so they could not tell me what was wrong. Sept. 24 2001, i went to get into the car and it woul dnot turn over. The ignition system had gone out. Meanwhile the leather has detached from the intereior of the door as well.

My wife's car ('98 s70 t5) stop last week. I took it to the dealer and they said that the tensioner seized up. This caused major damage to the engine about $3500 worth.i got the timing belt changed at 71,000 on the recommendation of the dealership so this type of problem would not happen, but it did anyway. The car now has 108,000 miles.volvo's corporate customer service called me today and said the they are not responsible due to the mileage of the car and it is far out of warranty.i am awaiting a response from the dealership.searching the web i have found numerous postings of similar compliants with the tensioner.something must be done to correct this problem.

Prior to the 30k mile tune-up the consumer complained to the dealer and the vehicle driving hard, shifting hard, the tachometer reading higher and the smell of burning oil, the dealer check the vehicle and found nothing wrong, while driving with 36k miles on the vehicle it began to smoke under the hood and caught fire, the manufacturer is denying any responsibility.nlm

1998 volvo s70 t5-vehicle intermittently, without prior indication will cease to operate while traveling. Engine light will come on and engine will hesitate and then shut down. Occurs generally 2 or 3 times in a day or two and then maybe not again for a month or so. Three different volvo repair shops have been ineffective in diagnosing...failure has occurred on high speed arterial roads as well as while idling/ stopped .

Abs/tracs lights comes on and off indicating a brake module malfunction

Intake vent port blew out, also, lost braking.

While braking, the vehicle vibrated. Took vehicle to dealership and themechanic indicated there was a crack in the brake master cylinder. The abs light illuminated, the oxygen sensor was replaced, the vacuum line was replaced, the upper torque arm bushing broke, the door locking system broke, the inside door panel came apart.

I am reporting this incident, since the repair shop told me that it is third such failure that they have repaired on volvo s70's in the last two weeks. No safety defect listed in summary.

Air conditioning system has failed 5 times in the past 2 years.taken the car to the dealer under warranty.the dealer has changed multiple parts including switches, relays, etc. The car works fine for 1 - 4 months, and then the a/c stops working all of a sudden again.

Antenna replaced, failure causing noise.

The 2 of 4 welds on the jacking point bracket failed.the jacking point bent over, causing the car to fall down about 1" onto the volvo jack, pinning the jack between the car and the pavement.no injuries.

Lights (head, signal,tail) failed.*et

Light switch failure.

Right front door warning lamp failed.

Electrical problems since shortly after purchase of vehicle, to dealer 25 times. Dashboard light would come on, indicating that headlights were not working when in fact they were.dealer stated vehicle had a bulb and socket problem, taillight bulb failed, signal lights flash very fast, side signals sockets and bulbs shorted, 4 running light contacts melted, front headlight shorted, left front headlight inoperable, and bulb indicator illuminated.door locks inoperable, windows would not go up, master window control switch faulty, and speakers distorted.seat belt plastic part cracked.transmission sticks on lowe gear, happened twice.gas light comes on even when tank is full.washer fluid inidcator illuminated, washer jets inoperable, wiper blads replaced, right side mirror did not adjust all the way out.front and rear brake pads worn, rotors replaced, brakes cause screeching noises.engine light illuminated, cable under engine loose.humming noise while driving, dealer replaced right front hub, left and right front stabilizer links.mudflaps loose.evap valve replaced.

Front corner light housing was replaced, front turn signal light had gone bad causing the blinker to flash rapidly.

The low beam headlights are dim i have replaced the bulbs with brighter bulbs and they are still dim i have to drive with the fog lights on all the time in order to drive at night.

There have been repeated failures of light bulbs (turn signal, brake lights, headlights, etc.)-- 12 documented from dealer, another 4-6 not documented because fixed "informally" .the dealer claims the failures are due tocheap halogen bulbs now used by volvo rather than an electrical system problem.i notice that many of the complaints filed on this make/model involve similar problems.whether the electrical system or the bulbs are at fault, this is a significant safety problem.

Without warning rear brake lights do not function. Had brake lights replaced.indicator on dashboardilluminated after service was rendered to vehicle.

Repeated failure of headlamps, selector switch (lights go out), and turn signal.i need to continuously apply pressure to the selector switch in order to keep the lights on - this makes driving unsafe.

Poor visibility behind vehicle. Hazard light switch is inappropriately positioned in front of the automatic shift handle, and is accidentally switched on. Remote control for the rear trunk is over-sensitive.

I believe the information is self explanatory. Thank you. My situation has been escalated to the manufacturer who over the past 6-7 weeks has been extremely unresponsive to my requests to establish meeting. No safety defect listed in summary.

Front turn signalssocket housing is burning, causing malfunction in headlight. Dealer has been contacted.

Volvo has known about the excessive failure rate of headlights for a long time (3 burned out in 1 year on my car!)but they make owners pay for replacements as "a maintenance item". Light bulbs should last at least as long as the manufacturer warranty (e.g. 10,000 hours) under the legal definition of "reasonable expectation". C'mon, volvo, 'fess up!

99 v 235 000/headlight switch: consumer states that the head lights went out while driving at night. A recall is on this make & model, but the dealer and the manufacturer informed that the vehicle vin# was not cover under that recall. Nlm

Volvo customer relations re: vin [xxx], 1998 s70 sir or madammy wife and i purchased a pre-owned 1998 volvo s70 in 2000. Two nights ago as we were driving on a 30-mile rural-stretch home, our headlight switch began to malfunction. With the switch in the on position, the dashboard lights were off and the headlights and taillights would intermittently go out. We pulled off the road and discovered that by pushing the switch inward toward the dash, the dashboard lights, headlights and taillights would stay lit, so long as you were constantly pushing in the switch.yesterday i searched the internet and discovered that this is a problem that has been addressed by nhtsa recall no. 99v235/volvo recall no. 94. I immediately started making phone calls to get this part replaced.volvo of lisle retrieved my cars information and informed me that the switch had already been replaced under the recall on 051799, prior to our purchase of the vehicle.they also informed me that because the original switch had already been replaced according to their records, i would be required to pay for the repair. The recall on the switch was issued by the nhtsa because the problem put the driver at risk of having an accident. Obviously, the problem still exists, and to my dismay i am forced to pay for it.i feel that volvo is always responsible for fixing the design, regardless of how many times the part under recall breaks.i expect the nhtsa to investigate this issue, as i am sending them a copy of this letter. I kept the broken switch and i would like a name and address in your warranty department to send it to.i expect to be refunded the costs i incurred for this repair, as well as receiving a new switch installed free of charge, once this problem is fixed.i am looking forward to hearing from you.cc: nhtsa.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Headlightswill go out whileconsumer is driving, and the only way to keep headlights on is to hold switch in the on position. Contacted dealer.

Headlight switch failed.

1. 12/23/97: car died in slow freeway traffic; restarted after 5 minutes, but "check engine light" stayed on.

Right and left turn signal failed.nlm

When driver turned on the directional signal light switch to make a turn either left or right, the turn signal switch won't return to place unless the consumer did it manually or made a wider turn.also, when the light is being used to turn to left, consumer has to turn to right so the blinking light can stop.*ml

Check engine light has come on repeatedly.ecu indicates a problem with the fuel system.dealer initially thought that gas cap had been removed while engine was running.to date, source of problem has not been found.presently, car is with dealer and manufacturer's representative for service.

Right side reading light lamp failed.

The passenger side front door locking mechanismfailed.i can no longer unlock the car using the key fob or the interior unlock button, i must reach over and pull the door handle to open the door from the inside.

Dt*:the contact stated once the passenger side door and both rear doors are locked, they can not be opened from the inside.in order for occupants to exit the vehicle, while the doors are locked, the door must be opened by someone from the outside.the dealer recommended replacing the auto window control and locks on all three doors.the driver side door lock failed previously.the vehicle was taken to the service dealer who replaced the auto window controls and lock to remedy the problem.there were no warning indicators prior to the lock failure.

Passenger side auto door lock.

1) problem with right rear passenger door lock, not unlocking.must manually unlock from inside of car.2) driver side door not closing.when attempting to close door it bounces back.the only way to close the door is to force it with body weight.

1st problem with car, door would not stay closed after several attempts to slam door would bounce off door frame. 2nd problem steering wheel would make grinding noise when making left turns only which would result in stiffness of left turn.3rd problem , 1st winter that i had the car, the molding at the front windshield would be off of the window before any attempt to remove the snow, the dealer replaced molding.2nd winter came along, front windshield molding off of the window. The dealer stated i will have to pay for replacement, and stated that it was because i hit molding with ice scraper, i explained molding was already off before ice & snow removal.dealer/owner asked where is the molding i told him i do not know, it was brought to my attention that it was no longer there.service manager stated that since i hit molding with ice scraper that air got under molding and when driving came off.but both times molding off window prior to any attempt of ice & snow removal.therefore, i will have to pay $50.00.thank you.

Transmission assembly has a crack, and engine check light comes on while driving. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.

Consumer experiences premature failure of transmission selector light, unable to put vehicle into gear without stepping on brake pedal and after dark unable to see gear selected.

As i was pulling out onto a busy street, my seatbelt let go, spontaneously released itself! it does this 2-3 times in a row. When i hear the sound of a seatbelt buckle clicking (after i fasten mine, sound seems to come from the passenger side!) then i know it's not going to release again. At least not til after i shut the car off and then start it again.

This is not a complaint, but a request for information.my coworker has a 1998 volvo s70.she is fairly short and the shoulder belt rubs on her neck.is there any product available that would help move the seat belt to a better position without compromising its effectiveness.

Seat belts do not retract properly and get caught in the door. Twice this has resulted in broken courtesy lights and once the inside door panel was so badly damaged, volvo agreed to replace it. I had the driver side seat belt replaced (under warranty) and it now works fine. However, the passenger side still sags and has once again broken the courtesy light in the door. I asked my volvo dealer about this and was told there is nothing wrong, and "even the new cars do that." i can't believe this and have seen this problem posted many times on a volvo message board. Even though this is clearly the problem, volvo will not cover the cost of the repeatedly broken light.*la

Passenger side seat belt retractor does not operate properly and gets caught in the door.

Routinely, when seat belt is disengaged, it does not withdraw completely and catches in door jam of door (driver and/or passenger).

Rear outboard seat belt retractors were replaced after failing twice. *la

The height of the front seats create a dangerous blind spot and obstruct view due to design.

Plastic hinge on the base of the rear seat broke off causing the base of the rear seat to be unstable, volvo dealer will not replace under warranty stating the problem is due to excess force not a defect in the seat. (father of owner)

Consumer 1998 s70 engine has failed on two different occasions, timing belt serpentine belt has been replaced. ***nar*** the consumer believed this was a premature failure.the water pump was leaking.the front spring seat was replaced.

I took my car to the sears auto center at 1178 el camino real in san bruno, california (sears store #6909) on september 2, 2018 for front brakes.sears returned the car to me on 9/2/18 (a copy of my "final invoice" is enclosed). I subsequently learned that the dust boot for the right front brake caliper is missing.i returned to sears on september 10 and told the manager in charge, mr. Holloway, that i had learned - from another mechanic who had been doing other front end work - that the dust boot was missing and that this is one of the component parts of the brake caliper system (designed to keep debris and moisture out of the brake caliper). Sears re-inspected my vehicle on september 10 and confirmed that the dust boot is missing.i was told that the department manager (mr. Julio estrada) would need to address the situation. On september 11, 2018, the manager of the sears auto center - mr. Julio estrada - refused to fix the problem at sears' expense.i believe that sears was negligent and ask that nhtsa investigate the conduct of sears auto center.

I had this problem diagnosed and repaired incorrectly at laurel jaguar volvo of tinley park, il., at a cost of $341.00. The problem persists. I do not think that i should have to pay additional money to correct a safety problem such as this.dt

The abs control unit failed.the abs is disabled by the failure.a new abs control unit is on order at the volvo dealer.it is covered by warrenty.i'm reporting this as a safety issue because the abs system is a safety system and it should not fail due to a defective part.although not valid for your data collection, i can say i know other people with the same volvo who have had the same problem.mr

Abs light comes on all the time, vehicle had to have abs computer replaced.i was told by volvo repair shop, they are getting a minumum of 2-3 a month with exact same problem defective computer.dt

Abs and traction control failed. Mr

In normal driving conditions, the anti-lock brakes will engage sometimes without even touching the brake pedal. (ie. On accelerating) following this, the "abs" and "tracs" light comes on. When this condition presents itself during normal braking conditions, the brakes get "soft" from anti-locking pulses until the computer finally recognizes the error and realizes that in fact there is no need to engage anti-lock system, after which regular braking may resume.dt

Abs/tracs lights comes on and off indicating a brake module malfunction

Abs and tracs light turns on and off randomly while driving. Affects the brakes because abs is disabled and also activated during driving. This issue has been widely discussed in online forums, and is also well-known to dealers throughout the world. The problem is due to a failure in the abs/tracs control unit.

Asb/tracs module failure on my 1998 volvo s70

Abs computer chip was bad and needed to be replaced.my car has fewer than 60,000 miles.this component was not covered by the extended warranty and cost over $600 to replace.i have heard this is a common problem.if failure of the abs chip is as common as i'm told, then i believe volvo should pick up the cost for replacing this defective component in their vehicles.

My 1998 volvo s70 had the abs module failed.this seems to be a very common problem with the car.had this failed in rain or snow, the consequences could have been terrible.from what i have read, this is a known problem by volvo, but they refuse to fix it.the cost is outrageous, over $600.

The abs light comes on and off intermittently. My technician says it is a faulty abs controller. I have seen several posts on brickboard.com in reference to the same problem. It appears to me that volvo has released a car with an obvious defect.

Rear passenger wheel sensor for the abs, shows needed replacement.the sensor replacement does not correct the problem. The auto tech researched from a common auto technichians web page and found this to be a common problem for the s70.the problem lays with a faulty computer on the vehicles. As a result the abs does not operate.1998 volvo s70t.

The cruise control turns off automatically, and without warning, causing a fairly rapid deceleration. Sometimes, cruise control will not set.

Abs brake unit failed at 60k miles; all service was done at dealer.dozens and dozens of owners have reported this to nhtsa for exact same make and model.nhts seems powerless to take on this issue. How many deaths will it take to get some action? volvo dealers and ford know well the problem -- just count the cash they are making on the replacements, and then multiply by 10 because most are not willing to pay $1,000 for a $200 part.

My wife's 1998 volvo s70 had 74,000 miles when her abs and tracs warning light came on.after taking it into the volvo dealership it was assessed that the abs/tracs is not working because of a failure of the abs/tracs control module. After some research i found a large number of people having the same issue when their same model car reached anywhere between 50 and 100 thousand miles. This is a serious safety concern and volvo should recall and replace the part.

Abs system intermittently activates upon braking, engine light comes on but dealer and other service organization unable to locate cause despite error code.

Driving down the highway when there was spontaneous increase in rpm without having foot on gas. Brakes locked up on vehicle. Cause of the problem is unknown.

Dt*: the contact stated the abs and traction control lights on the dash illuminated causing both components to be inoperable.this occurred intermittently.the vehicle was driven to the dealer who determined both systems needed to be replaced. Updated 10/31/2006 -

This is a common, expensive, and potentially dangerous failure on 1998 volvo 70-series..

The control module for the abs system has malfunctioned and must be replaced in order for the abs system to work. The repair shop owner indicated that this problem is "common" for this type of volvo and that his small shop had replaced 8-10 of them. The car remains driveable, but i have been advised that until the control module is replaced, i run the risk of rotor damage, as well as not having the use of the abs. I contacted volvo and was advised to contact nhtsa. Please advise if you have received other complaints and if i have any recourse. Thank you.

During braking at slow speeds intermittently there is a loud pop. Then, pedal goes tofloor, resulting in extendedstopping distance. Vehicle taken to dealer 8-9 times.replaced brake pads twice, found lots of black dust, but stated that was normal. Problem not remedied.

Intermittent failure of the abs/tracks system - well known/documented defect. Volvo parts center says cause was faulty abs units from the philippines. This causes a failure of the abs system, yet volvo does not recall?.

Abs module on the car failed.while driving, the abs light came on and upon taking it to the dealer, i was told that the abs module had to be replaced at a cost of $615.the car is a certified per-owned with less than 60k miles.the module should not have failed and by reading the other complaints, it seems to be a common issue on the 1998 s70 models.mr

I believe the information is self explanatory. Thank you. My situation has been escalated to the manufacturer who over the past 6-7 weeks has been extremely unresponsive to my requests to establish meeting. No safety defect listed in summary.

I purchased this car in may 1997 and thewarranty expired in may 2001. In july of 2001, i noticed that the abs warning light on the dashboard would intermittently flash on and off. It did not seem to affect my regular braking. At my next oil change in december i reported this problem to the dealer. They checked it out and found no problem. Now a year later i found that the abs light was staying on for longer and longer periods, but it was still intermittent. I brought the car in this month while the light was on. They tested it with the computer and found that the abs control module had failed. Besides being a $600 item, this meant that whenever the light was on, which was often over the last year, i actually had no abs function although i had no way of knowing it. I have since spoken to other volvo owners who have had the same problem with intermittent failure of this module. I am reporting this because i feel that this is a defective part made by volvo, and very dangerous. If someone is on an icy surface and steps on the brakd hard to activate the abs, they will be shocked to find out the the system has failed because the abs warning light is on. This module should last for the life of the car.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the antilock brake light intermittently illuminated.the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined while the light was illuminated, there was a failure of the antilock brakes.also, the dealer determined the computer needed to be replaced.the manufacturer was alerted.

This seems to be a common problem with these models (98 s70), i was encouraged to report here because volvo na is not responding to customer complaints.abs dash light illuminates intermittently, sometimes resets correctly upon ign. Off and restart, sometimes not.while light is illuminated, abs non-functional.mr

Abs and trac lights work only part of the time. Lights for these features usually light up after an odd, one-second humm.

Abs/tracs failure.

Abs is working only some of the time (volvo of las vegas has concluded that abs module is faulty and needs to be replaced).you never know at which point when you are driving that the abs decides not to function anymore.braking can become quite worrisome and frighteningabs is a critical safety component of the car and volvo has failed to correct this problem.the sporadically functioning abs system can become very dangerous and cause a serious, if not fatal accident.volvo stands for safety and they should stand behind their product.this faulty abs module has become a major problem for 1998 s70's.i believe the nhtsa should mandate a recall.

Selling dealer and manufacturer-provided extended warranty company refuse to underwrite $750 expense of replacement.dealer acknowledges that 7 similar cars are currently awaiting replacement of the same control unit. No safetyd efec tlisted.

Problem reported to dealer and volvo na. Critical part of safety system, out of warranty, $553 repair cost. Known defect in s/v/c 70 series.

Intake vent port blew out, also, lost braking.

With approximately 57,000 miles on the odometer i started experiencing severe vibrations when i applied the brakes stopping in a straight line and when turning left at speeds approximating 15-20 miles an hour.the dealer told me that the front rotors were warped because they are aluminum and warp if they get wet when they are hot. Duh! this is florida, how can they not get hot & wet?the rear rotors were replaced at approx 30,000 miles.deel is currently replacing the rack & pinion steering assembly which apparently caused the severe vibrations when turning left & braking.this car has been maintained at deel volvo in accordance with the manufacturers guidelines.

Brake pedal pulsating, car making noises when brakes applied normally in heavy traffic.abs/tracs light came on.the noise and failure light have occurred several times.dt

At about 10,000 miles the brakes would slip and rumble when braking down a hill. I took the car in to complain and they told me that they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I started avoiding hills.every time i brought the car in for service i complained about this problem and was assured that nothing was wrong.now i am at 28300 and i took the car in for my 30,000 maintence, not at the dealer but another certified volvo shop.i tell them about the problem. I am told that the rotor is bad.well i had this same problem at under 10,000. Miles.

Abs light comes on and off randomly.been told by volvo dealer that it is a bad abs module.dt

While driving, i noted that the abs light was on.the next trip in the car, the abs sign was still on.i waited because intermittently various lights come on my dash, disappear, and never reappear.i went to the dealer to verify the failure of the abs.the dealer affirmed the failure and replaced the abs.the car is a 1998 s70.two of my coworkers have discovered that they have to have their abs replaced, within one month of my abs failure.one coworker has a volvo that is the same year as mine; the other car is a year or 2 older.this sounds like manufacturer planned obsolescence to me.how could this be a coincidence?i bought this car because of its reputation for reliable sturdy structure and safety and i am disappointed.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

I have a 1998 volvo s70 which has abs/trac light problems.i've been having intermittent issues with this where the indicator lights come on and the abs will sometimes pulsate and it makes a terrible noise. My understanding is that when the abs indicator is on, i don't have abs brakes.it appears from the volvo brickboard that a lot of people are having this issue.i am concerned about the safety (besides the fact that it is scary when the brakes start going) and think volvo should make the necessary repairs. It appears to be an issue only on this year/make.

Abs light works intermittently.i was told i needed to replace my abs unit as is was faulty but abs light on the dash doesn't always turn on.

My 1998 volvo s70 has 43,000 miles on it and the abs light comes on and off, and sometimes you feel in the brake pedal.after talking to other volvo owners they have had the same problem*la

Abs light coming on and off intermediately, told by technician that abs module is bad and needs to be replaced at a cost of $600 plus.the problem is since this is intermittent that when the unit "test" itself when your braking if it notices that they aren't working many times the brake pedal goes to the floor, which could be very dangerous.when i spoke to volvo north american they said yes this is a common problem, but will not fix it.

Abs module fails on most all 850 and s/v70 series cars 97-00.the abs system as well as the traction control system will not work when the unit is failing.it is an intermittant problem that gets worse over time (sometimes the fail indicator is on sometimes not).volvo is well aware of the problem and a replacemet is around 500.00 not including diagnostics and labor to install.to my knowledge their is no recall (from a company that prides itself on safety).

Rotors, brakes and struts replaced at approximately 100,000.abs controller fault diagnosed at dealer.failure led to loss of all antilock brake features as well as tracs.replacement of abs controller module recommended.

Abs / tracs lights come on due to defective abs controller.no anti-lock brakes.

Abs module on my 1998 volvo s70 (76k miles) is defective but is not covered under warranty.i believe it should be covered for the life of the vehicle.i know many volvo owners have experienced this same problem.please instruct volvo to issue a recall to fix this crucial safety problem.

Abs ecu unit defective. Abs light comes on intermittently. When abs light is on abs is not functioning. Volvo warranty will not cover replacement. Difficult for dealers to diagnose. *nlm

Upon applying the brakes there was ahumming noise/vibration that didnot allow the brakes to respond. There was a problem in the computer that engaged the abs brakes.updated 8/9/2006 -

The abs / tracks warning light has been coming on intermittently for the past year.initially in 2002 the dealership was not able to provide us with a definitive diagnosis, but without looking at the car, said that it was the abs control unit for $1000+. We declined the repair on the basis that it was a guess.on may 1, 2003, while in for routine service, the diagnosis was the abs/tracks control unit at a cost of $1000+.i entered 1 failure on today's date but numerous times the abs brakes engage when the brake pedal is not being touched and sometimes engages when the brakes are applied at slow speeds in non-emergency stopping.the dealership told me that the abs brakes will not work in an emergency situation.i have seen numerous complaints on the nhtsa website which leads me to believethe abs problem is widespread as probably less than 1% of car owners know to file a report.i estimate that 50% of 1998 volvos have this problem at 50000+ miles.i consider this a serious safety issue as a driver will rely upon the abs in an accident and will apply the brake pedal accordingly.if the abs don't function, the wheels will lock and possibly cause the driver to lose control of the car.the other safety issue is the abs engaging when the brake pedal is not applied or when the abs engage in non-emergency stopping.this is not controlled braking and could also cause an accident by alarming and confusing the driver.we bought the volvo after being hit by a drunk driver at 100+ mph and can't afford to sustain further serious injury or the stress caused by worrying about safety equipment failure on what is considered to be the safest car on the road.please address this very serious issue.thank you.

Abs and tracs off indicator lights are on. Dealer diagnosed as failing abs control module. Dealer stated that abs does not work while indicator lights are on, but brakes do. With indicator lights on, the safety feature of anti-lock brakes and traction control are compromised.

The abs light illuminated on the dashboard.there is continuos failure of the abs braking system, and the consumer doesn't know if the system is engaged.the tracs control light is intermittent, and the consumer doesn't know if the wheels are going to lock not.*scc

The abs system controller is defective on my 98 volvo s70 with 90k miles. Under very light braking at slow speeds the abs will engage for no apparent reason and the remainder of the time it fails completely. I am told it is a chronic condition with this model and is a serious condition.

The abs antilock brake system in my 1998 volvo s70 failed.the dashboard light indicated abs & traction control (tracs) failure.normal non-abs braking remained.research on several volvo owners web sites (such as brickboard: http://www.brickboard.com/awd/?model=s70) showed systemic failure of the abs control module volvo part # 9162675 due to printed circuit board solder cracking after 6 years.the car was tested by a volvo dealer confirming abs control module failedure.volvo charges a total $650 to replace the unit.the "brickboard" owners group suggested a repair shop in california that resolders the circuit board, replaces and upgrades failed components, tests & returns it for $130 plus shipping.we had the old board repaired, since a new exact replacement board from volvo would have the same failure after another 5 years.the repaired abs control unit has been reinstalled & the car now works properly, with full abs and tracs control.this is not the first printed circuit failure from volvo.our 1993 volvo 940 turbo had two board failures: 1, the relay base board solder cracked, and resulted in the overdrive relay not working; 2, cruise control operated erratically, due to bad board solder.both of these boards were repaired by our local service shop.we are very concerned that two critical safety elements - the abs system and traction control - are failing in a relatively short period of time, & because of a failure of what should be a simple assembly of tested parts.further, we are most disturbed that volvo's remedy is a very expensive replacement, with the same failure prone part.worse, although we opted for a complete repair, there are owners who cannot afford the fix.these will be driving with far less braking and control than the car is capable of providing.

I have a 1998 volvo s70 t5.the anti-lock brake controller board is malfunctioning causing the anti-lock brake "red" indicator light to come on at various "random" times while driving the car.when this happens, the brake pedal depresses on its own and many noises are heard around the area of the front left tire and the anti-lock brakes stop working while the light is on.this happens very frequently (at least once every time i drive the car).

Volvo abs brake modular failed.local volvo service center aware of problem.

Failure of abs controller module.my research over the internet and numerous volvo certified technicians indicate this failure is problematic with the teves 20abs module.an internet forum page dealing with the volvo 850/s70 models is littered with inquiries into this problem.one volvo technician i corresponded with indicated he had replaced "hundreds" of these modules over the last several years.*la

Gas pedal lost responsiveness and suddenly accelerated. At the same time, brakes locked up.

Electrical problems since shortly after purchase of vehicle, to dealer 25 times. The left front brake rotor locked up, causing some components to burn up. The problem was due to a stuck caliper, which according to volvo is not related to the brake pad and rotor replacement performed by dealer.lower ball joint was also replaced.*la

A piece of the vacuum brake system came loose, causing engine to increase its rpms spontaneously and locke dup the brakes, resulting in loss of control.

The steering column is making a rubbing noise and is more prominent when turning, but the owner and the mechanic felt it could turn into a much bigger steering problem. Light came on inside of vehicle and the driver's side door open for no reason.

Faulty dash clips that retain the dashboard to the firewall. I was told by the lead technican at bob pinkus volvo in colorado springs, co that this was a known defect.

Dt: vehicle stalled/died, and lost power due to throttle body failure.

While driving at low speed vehicle revved andacceleratedwithout warning.

The contact owns a 1998 volvo s70. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the rpms increased and the vehicle independently accelerated without warning. The brake pedal failed to slow the vehicle down as the accelerator pedal went all the way to the floor. The contact put the vehicle in neutral, which also failed to slow the vehicle down. The contact continued to depress the brake pedal and the vehicle eventually slowed down. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 165,000.

Driving down the highway when there was spontaneous increase in rpm without having foot on gas. Brakes locked up on vehicle. Cause of the problem is unknown.
