The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. While driving approximately 30 mph, the srs air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel until the key was removed from the ignition switch. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and an authorized dealer who both advised that the driver information module within the computer system would need to be replaced. The technician informed the air bag would not deploy during an impact. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 126,000. The vin was unavailable.

While driving out of a parking lot and accelerating to 35 mph, entire dashboard blacked out. No speedometer, no odometer, no gas gauge,no message. Radio, windows, and air conditioning continued to work normally, as did headlights, interior lights, and turn signals. I turned off engine and then restarted car. Same symptoms. The third time i restarted car i received message on panel, srs/airbag service urgent light comes on and stays on. I could not retrieve any other information regarding average speed, how full gas tank is, etc. I just went out to my car, which has been parked for about 21/2 hours since the incident, to get the mileage for this report and panel lights have disappeared again! i will get car to mechanic tomorrow, but i feel this is a very dangerous situation to be in,and especially with night time or high speed highway driving! my mileage is approximately 94,000 miles. I could not get a reading from my odometer as the panel is blacked out again!

Dash cluster lights and gauges and turn signal indicator shut down and back on intermittently, motor seems to lose power when driving, and rough idle. The dash cluster problem happens while driving and in the park position.

The dash information sytem will randomly go blank and display srs and brake failure, along with all information lights blinking on and off. Also the analog gauges like the speedometer and fuel gauge will go to "0" and empty or just move eratically to any number or position while driving. At night sometimes the entire dash or information center will go black (no lights at all) and on odd occasions one headlight may go out and come back on.

I started my car and where it tells you if something needs to be done to car it said airbag warning urgent service needed. Then later while driving all the gauges stopped working. Now the gauges don't work at all. Plus when driving and turning a corner the car stalls now this has been happening for a couple years now. Plus a couple years ago all my head lights burnt out at once then they only lasted a couple days had to buy more that happened 5 times in one year still have no brights.

Driving car lights on dash board went completely off. Took it to shop they tap it and dash came on again, change fuse . Lights went off again and stayed off.

My 2003 volvo s60 has a seatbelt warning message.the dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty driver information module which would cost 1400 plus tax to repair.the car is valued at approximately 4000 as a trade.there are many complaints of failure of this part even in much newer volvos.

My 2003 s60 volvo has failed it all started with the radio flickering to different stations.i noticed from than my lights started blinking on and off i has no idea what was going on with this car i seriously almost got into in accident i pulled over and turned the car off 5mins after i started it up now all the guages where down eve fuel was pass empty i was terrified that my car would shut off i had my 7 year old in the car as i was carefully was driving home the guages starting moving all over the place radio switching from left to right the msg window said sea bag service soon iam very scare of my safety jus bought this car on feb 12/2013.

While driving my 2003 volvo s60, the dash instrument panel suddenly lost all power w/the gauges/display all stopping.then it would return and keep working.then it would do it a different time, continuing in this cycle - randomly shutting off completely so i had no gauges, warning lights, turn signal lights, etc.just a large black area where the instrument panel is.this was especially concerning at night when i would just randomly loose the display while driving on the highway.i contacted volvo and they said this is a known problem w/their vehicles (and is also confirmed when looking online for others who have had the same problem).the repair is not covered under any sort of safety recall, and is very expensive.for a mfg whose cars are touted as being very safe, having the instrument panel suddenly stop working so no idea of speed nor any gauges/warning lights are available while driving is clearly not in-line w/safe driving.no other car i've owned has ever had this known problem, especially w/a part not prone to wear & tear like other parts typically are in a car.

Instrument cluster failure

I have a 2003 volvo s 60 that has begun stalling out while driving.i believe that this is similar to other car problems that have been reported recently.at this time the dealer has not been able to locate or correct the problem.the car dies after it has reached operating temperatures.it just stops on the interstate, florida's toll road, in intersections, etc.it takes between 15 and 60 seconds before it can be restarted.my concern is that this could be an unreported problem with this vehicle.

I am surprised there has not been a recall issued for certain model year volvos relative to the center dash module losing all communication apparently due to failed solder connections (based on chat-rooms, volvo specific).i understand components can fail, but the sheer number of failures and the failure mode is beyond typical or expected failures.the failure mode causes most or all dash gauges, indicators and lights to fail, including the speedometer.these failures apparently occur randomly, and at any age/mileage.

The instrument panel went dead last winter; no lights, no indicators, no instruments, nothing.i recently became aware that this is not an uncommon problem.just an extremely expensive one.a volvo technician informed me that the japanese firm that volvo hired did a poor job and many of the instrument panels have defective soldering and require replacement or have the panel "re-pointed". Apparently, it is less of an issue in moist climates.volvo will not repair the panel.they will only replace it.i was quoted $1,605.00 plus $157.00 to program it to the car's computer.the technician knew exactly what i was talking about.so, as i said before, this is not a uncommon problem.with a dead instrument panel, you cannot determine how fast you are going, how much gas you have in your car, no oil indicator, no turn signals, no high beam, or any of the alerts or reminders that the computer puts up.

Vehicle driver information module (dim) stopped working while vehicle was traveling on the road at approximately 45 miles per hour.

While driving home after having steering rack replaced the dash lights (speedometer, turn signals, message center, etc.) went completely out.after multiple drives the dash lights go on and off intermittently while driving.

The entire gauge cluster turns off and on when the vehicle is traveling down the road. This is a wide spread problem thats well documented by the volvo community. The issue is a poorly soldered circuit board on the dim.

Dt: vehicle stalled for no apparent reason.the vehicle was taken to thedealership three times but they could notfind any cause. There was no warning and the vehicle could be started back up. Consumer stated that this occurred at least 6 times, and they did not drive the vehicle anymore. This started in march 2005.

Transmission shifting problems oil leaks.

The entire instrument panel went dead, and will not come back to life.the tachometer, odometer, speedometer and fuel gauge are off as though the car is off.several mechanics have quoted me $1200+ to replace the entire instrument panel.the instruments went dead while i was on the interstate and leave me without the information i need to safely drive.volvo should recall these vehicles and replace the faulty parts, there a quite a few forums on the internet where other volvo drivers have the same instrument failure.

Entire dashborad has went black gas gauge, speedodmetor, turning signals and hazard lights.

Dash cluster lights and gauges and turn signal indicator shut down and back on intermittently, motor seems to lose power when driving, and rough idle. The dash cluster problem happens while driving and in the park position.

I have a 2003 s600 and the instrument panel goes dark and all the instruments stop working (speedometer, rpm, fuel, temp --all go to zero) . This occurs intermittently, while driving, the engine was running fine and no warning lights came on.i am also experiencing problems with indicator lights on the dashboard. As an example, the blinker lights on the dashboard only work about 20% of the time. The actual directionals on the exterior of the car are still working all of the time. The condition seems to be getting progressively worse.in addition various messages have appeared -- such as srs airbag service urgent, brake failure - stop safely. Brought it to my mechanic and he had to replace the driver information module (dim) $1,300.he stated that he has replaced 4 dim's within the past month.appears to be a common failure with 2003 s60 model.my mechanic also commented that in the past volvo dealer would only have 1 dim in stock -- they now have 6 to 8 in stock.i think this should be a manufacturer expense -- no matter what the mileage is on the car. Updated 08/04/11

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the instrument panel failed and the gauges stopped functioning. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 82,000 and the current mileage was 82,300.

The dashboard instrument panel and lights go off and come back on whenever. I have had the car for over a year. It was a gift. I just found out tonite from an officer that when the instrument panel and lights are off i have no tail lights. I was wondering if there has ever been a recall. This is very dangerousthe date below is it an approximate. I really do not remember the exact date.

Compliant 1:i have a 2003 s60 volvo.the instrument panel goes dark and all instruments stop working.this includes all gauges, speedometer, rpm, fuel, temp and blinkers.they all go to zero and panel turns black and completely off.the exterior blinkers do still work.when the panel is working i receive various messages such as srs airbag service urgent, brake failure, and stop immediately no oil pressure.i took the car to my mechanic and he said it's the driver information module which costs $1300 to replace.my mechanic also stated that this is a reoccuring problem in this car.i have done research on the internet and have found that there are many volvo's of the same make and model in which the same exact problems are occuring.i feel that the manufacturer should be responsible for fixing this problem.it's obvious that it's a recurring problem. Compliant 2:i'm also experiencing an engine stall problem.this is very dangerous.the car will stall at least 50% of the time when making a turn.i've researched this as well and found that it's a reoccurring problem as well.apparently the fuel pressure sensor located on the left end of the fuel rail may, at times, transmit an incorrect signal regarding the fuel pressure to the engine control module.this causes engine misfires and causes the engine to shut down completely when in middle of intersections.i have come close to many dangerous situations because of this engine failure.

I am the owner of a 2003 volvo s60, this vehicle has been a headache for some time now.the first issue started with the headlights blowing out.i have had the car since 2008 and the lights have blown out atleast 10x's.the 2nd major issue i'm having with the vehicle is the car completely shuts down without warning when making a turn or sometimes sitting idle at a red light.of course when the car is hooked up to a diagnostic machine there are no error codes and since this issue happens without warning it never happens when a service tech is with me.lastly, two days ago i started my vehicle and the entire dash completely blacked out.none of the gauges are operable. I cannot see whether i have fuel or not in it.i feel that the manufacturer of this vehicle should be help responsible for these issues.i have read many complaints, and there were many volvo owners who have had the same exact problems i have been experiencing.there needs to be a re-call so that the consumers who have paid several diagnostic fees and repairs fees get reimbursed for the faulty products or parts being used to build these vehicles.

Since about three months after i got my car in 2010 the entire dashboard system does not work. The gauges do not move or turn on whatsoever and the lights do not come on. I have looked on volvo forums and it says that the motorolla chip in the dashboard is defective in all of the 2001-2003 models. It is rather scary in my opinion never knowing how much gas i have or how fast i am going.

1) electric reading of dashboard goes completely dark. Unable to determine speed, fuel, engine temperature, ect.urgent air bag warning light went on prior to it going dark. Car skips gears and revs when gas pedal is pressed. 2) radiator cooling fan keeps running when connected even when vehicle is turned off. It never turns off until battery is drained. Replaced entire unit as well as battery and still has the same problem. Volvo repair stated they never had an issue like this and issue maybe connected to failed electrical system.

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. The contact stated that the entire instrument panel gradually became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the instrument panel needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000. Updated 4/20/15

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, she was informed that the turn signals had failed. The contact also mentioned that the clock failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the instrument panel module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the instrument panel module. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were approximately 125,000.

During normal city and highway driving, my 2003 volvo s-60 sedans engine and electrical system suddenly fails without warning, resulting in a dangerous complete loss of power and control of the vehicle. The dangerous incident has occurred numerous times.the original dealer, warren henry volvo, and volvo north america, were both notified of the volvos hazardous problem, and the vehicle has been in service and repair on three separate occasions for the same problem without satisfactory resolution. To date, the 2003 volvo s-60 exhibits the same dangerous problems.

Clock started rotating numbers.. And not stop. Then instrument dash information stopped. No dash lights, speed, gas, warnings. All off. When i can see dash. Once a month, maybe....it says air bags need checking, check engine. I am concerned that the air bags will not work if an accident occurs. And if i were to be able to afford the repair, then will i have to pay to check air bags? engine? what if a fire did occur... How would i know? dealer states $ 1700 to repair. It is safety issue for speed limit, air bag deployment if an accident occurs, fuel consumption. Can't see mileage for this complaint! dash not working... Engine mounts shot. Seat warmer broke first year. Needed replacement. The electrical harness in this car is shot, broke, not correct. Too many complaints entered for this to not be a recall. Please, please help!

Air bags say urgent service needed ,clock going backwards , on board computer going crazy , worried about it catching fire ,tail lights have been replaced 2 times and still they go out right after being replaced

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. While driving at various speeds, the instrument panel indicator intermittently illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that a cable behind the mileage gauge failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 179,000.

Lost instrument panel while driving.all gauges not working.it happened while driving.

The dash information system will randomly go blank and display srs failure. Along with all information lights start blinking on and off. The analog gauge like the speedometer and fuel gauge will go to "0" or just move eratically to any number or position while driving. At night the entire information center go blank the clock and the mileage(no lights at all).

For several weeks i have intermittent issues with odd codes showing up on the dash board and then the car not starting.i took it in and no one could find anything wrong. This week driving home from work on the highway the car went into full shut down.(extremely dangerous !!!!)i managed to get the car to the side of the road and was able to restart a few minutes later and drove the car homewith the flashers on and remaining in the right lane in case of a repeat.i was in the far left lane keeping up with rush hour traffic when the car died initially.it appears that this is a common problem with volvos and i am hoping that something will be done as this is very dangerous.

2003 volvo s60 aw dashboard failure.i understand from talking with auto mechanics this is a common problem and is also recognized by auto electrical repair sites.this extremely dangerous with this loss of equipment.

On 12 dec, 2008, my 2003 volvo s60 stalled with no warning while traveling on a busy highway at 60 mph. I pulled to safety (vehicle was in "limp home" mode) and had the vehicle towed to the dealership (park place volvo). Since the vehicle started right back up and presented no codes, i was told there was nothing wrong and given a bill for $418 (for tow and diagnostic check). Approx. 1 month later, vehicle presented same problem; it stalled, without warning, while driving... Creating a great safety risk for the second time. I had vehicle towed again to same dealership, and since vehicle started right back up with no codes, i was told there was nothing wrong. Dealership could not get vehicle to duplicate problem on either occasion. However, to appease me, dealership did replace accelerator pedal...vehicle still presents same stalling issue, and intermittently goes into "limp home" mode for no apparent reason. This will undoubtedly cause a serious accident, as it is obvious, from the numerous complaints on this issue, that this is a mass defect.

Instrument cluster not illuminating.i understand this is a common issue with 2003 s60 volvos.manufacturer needs to recall/repair as this is a significant safety issue when all the instruments go dark and you cannot gauge your speed and gas left in tank

Dt: in april the vehicle stalled when making a right hand turns.did the same thing a few days later. Took vehicleto the dealer, they checked the vehicleand they hadn't heard of this before.some kind of plate had to be cleaned . The vehicle just turned 30,000 miles. Then a month later while merging at 55 mph the vehicledied.it did start again.brought the vehicle back to dealer, they kept the car a week and did testing, and claimed one other personhad the same complaint. They did the same thing to consumer'svehicle that they did to other person' vehicles. Then, dealer said there was a recall.

2003 volvo s60 experienced "death" of driver information module (dim), which monitors all gauges on the vehicle. Dealership is able to replace the part for $1500! it not available "after market" by another manufacturer. Research online shows this is a very common problem among 2001-2003 models. This major safety concern should be investigated, as numerous people are driving without dash panel information due to the exorbitant cost. The problem began approximately two weeks ago and cannot be remedied without buying the dim.

Dashboard went dead while driving. Gas meter, rpm, everything went dead. The dash lights later came on for a while, but the speedometer went back to 40 mph. Nothing works properly.

Vehicle began displaying conflicting speed information, along with intermittent warning lamps.speedometer froze at current speed during deceleration, then gauges began to flutter side to side.

While driving the dash (not the radio, or other electrical components) went out-completely blank. I lost, the tac, the speedometer/odometer, engine gauge and gas gauge.this problem has continued intermittently and i can not relate it to a given speed or weather. Not knowing your speed is a safety issue and at night it's odd to be driving a car w/out an illuminated dash/controls. I do have an srs code-service immediately. When i was last at the dealer they had "never heard of this issue" and would have to charge me diagnostic fees. Online research shows this to be a common problem and a new dim ($1200) can fix the problem. This is a safety issue and there are too many complaints posted online for this to be a little problem. What is the r/1000 (repair per thousand vehicles)?

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle began to decelerate independently to approximately 5 mph. The contact stopped the vehicle on the shoulder and shut the engine off. After restarting, the contact was able to drive normally. Thevehicle was taken to the dealer three times for diagnostic testing. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The third time the vehicle was taken to the dealer, the technician replaced the ecm. The failure continued after the repair. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the turbo was replaced but to no avail. The vehicle was not further repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000.

Driving car lights on dash board went completely off. Took it to shop they tap it and dash came on again, change fuse . Lights went off again and stayed off.

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. The contact stated that the entire instrument panel failed, including all gauges and warning lights. In addition, the contact stated that the brakes were affected by the failure. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the failure was diagnosed as the instrument panel control module. The manufacturer was contact and advised that the vehicle was out of warranty therefore, they were not able to assist with the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 89,000.

Instrument panel/cluster goes out while driving which means you can't read any of the guages or warnings lights other than if check engine light is on. This imposes a safety risks to me and other traffic on the road. It does this erratically, going out completely and coming back on in time. No fuse problems, they are checked when this issue happens. I have a picture of exactly what happens right before the whole panel goes out.

The car stalled repeatedly while the engine was idling. All power was lost making the car very difficult to steer and brake.i nearly got into several accidents the engine stalled while:1) stopped at a red light2) while shifting gears on the highway3) while shifting gears in heavy traffici took the car to the dealership 4 times before the problem correctly fixed.the following items were replaced but did not fix the problem:1) fuel pump 2) map sensor (replaced 2 times)neither of these fixes worked.the problem was corrected after modifying the software on the computer board.

My 2003 volvo s60 has a seatbelt warning message.the dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty driver information module which would cost 1400 plus tax to repair.the car is valued at approximately 4000 as a trade.there are many complaints of failure of this part even in much newer volvos.

Car experiences loss of power, stalling, sputtering and hesitation when gas pedal is pressed down. San luis obispo smith volvo authorized dealer could not find any codes to explain this. Checked timing sensors, fuel pressure, rpm cam signals, eth system, air flow meter, map sensor. All checked out ok, dealer said all signs point to eta failing. Car stalls and loses power abruptly, i do not feel safe driving it anymore. There is a recall for models up to 2002, this 2003 s60 non turbo manual seems to exhibit the flaws of electronic throttle failure.

The dashboard has a fault in it, possibly a short or some other electrical faultthe problem has been intermittent.but, only recently has become rather acute.lights and gauges go on and off.problem has adversely affected the srs airbag system to the point that it is no longer functions and requires resetting; apparently.i am filing this complaint because since doing my research, there have been numerous incidents being reported on the internet.considering the large number of issues/complaints i have seen about this issue, the problem with my car is apparently not an isolated incident.repair for such appears to be in the $1,500.00 to $2,000.00 range.

My instrument cluster has been malfunctioning until it went completely blank, occasionally it will light up, this is a safety concern since unable to see speedometer or vehicle fault lights.

Dashboard instrument cluster going on and off-had it tested several times-stays off--no gauges or lighting-this is a common problem with all volvos and i am thinking it is a safety issue-and why had it not been recalled yet??this is a repair that i have to fix-as it is almost 1500 dollars---volvo forums has several hundred people complaining of this--before i get repair i am wondering if volvo should contribute---

My instrument cluster has been malfunctioning until it went completely blank, occasionally it will light up, this is a safety concern since unable to see speedometer or vehicle fault lights.

Dt: contact statds2003 volvo cut offwhilegoing 60 mph. Car completely lost power in the middle lane. It was towed ,and they kept it for 3 days. Consumer picked it up on 7-16-05.the dealerreplaced the battery. Nine days later on 7-24-05 the car completely quit again.they called heconsume r at homeandtold her they thought it was a fuel pressure issue. Her car has been in the shop 2 times previously for hesitation and delays, and they kept telling her it was chip related .the last two incidents occurred at relative higher speeds than the first time.car hasbeen in the shop for one week, and she did hear from the service dealership last night.he told her he thought it was afuelpressure issue and he was going to call in a specialist.

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning the vehicle will shut down, and will not restart.

Air bags say urgent service needed ,clock going backwards , on board computer going crazy , worried about it catching fire ,tail lights have been replaced 2 times and still they go out right after being replaced

Fuel leak coming from undercarriage passanger right rear seats, near fuel filter, off the top of the gas tank. Noticable smell and huge hazard for safety. What makes it presence detected is smell inside cabin after filling gas tank at fueling stations.

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. The contact stated that when the ignition was turned to the on position, the check engine warning indicator illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the air flow, the pressure, and oxygen sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. While driving at low speeds, the engine stalled and the check engine warning light illuminated intermittently. The failure recurred numerous times. Car died while driving 2 times.volvo says nothing wrong with the car.i filled for lemon law. Very bad service and attitude from borton volvo.the worst is that i find out that volvo knows about the problem and still let people drive their death trap cars.

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60.while driving low speeds, the vehicle would accelerate abnormally.the contact experienced difficulty accelerating as if the vehicle were in limp mode.in addition, the vehicle stalls without warning.she took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that they could not duplicate the failure and provide a remedy.the 2003 s60 was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 06v441000 (vehicle speed control).the failure mileage was 40,000 and current mileage was 74,000.

I have a 2003 s60 volvo.while driving 55 mph the car would go into limp mode and the speed would quickly drop to 10 mph and the message reduced engine performance would be displayed. The car will not accelerate past that speed.this is very serious safety concern because the quick drop in speed may lead to an accident.i took the car to a volvo dealership and was informed the car needs the electronic throttle system replaced.this was a common problem with older models and a recall was issued after a class action lawsuit.my model is not included in this recall, however; it is exhibiting the exact same problem that usually occurs when the car reaches 100,000 miles.

The grief from this car literally began on the way home from the show room, as the seat belts were not functioning. They required four visits to the service department to correct the problem. The issue of the tires being unsafe became apparent when the car was two weeks old, with under 1000 miles on the odometerfront & rear bumpers separate from vehicle , with little or no provocation. Tires self destruct at speeds of 2-4 mph (while parking), if a curb is touched. I'm informed that tires have weak sidewalls & to replace tires (at my expense). Air conditioning required three visits to repair shop & is still not getting the car as cold as it should in hot weather. I should add that i'm also informed that replacement tires will diminish the handling of the car.

I have a 2003 volvo s 60 that has begun stalling out while driving. I believe that this is similar to other car problems that have been reported recently. The car dies after it has reached operating temperatures. It just stops on the interstate or at a stop light, in intersections, etc. It takes between 10 and 30 seconds before it can be restarted. My concern is that this could be an recurring unreported problem with this vehicle.

I had a similar issue about two years ago and replaced the catalytic converter.just today (9/25/10), my 2003 volvo s60 began to irregularly stall while driving. While i'm slowing down, it downshifts by it self, and just dies, and while i'm slowing down, the warning indicators on the dash are not lit, as if nothing is wrong, but when come to a complete stop all the lights on the dash are lit.the check engine light then comes on, it wasn't on before this happened. This can be very dangerous when you are slowing down to turn at an intersection.the car stall, you have no power steering and you are dead in the middle of traffic.this happened no less than 10 time while i was driving today.

On 2 occasions, while driving, the vehicle suddenly stalled, the dealer replaced a sensor, however the problem recurred.

I own a volvo s60 and it has stalled three times in the last two weeks, i took it in to be looked at and they found nothing wrong with the engine to fix my problem.

I was traveling on i-65 from louisville, ky to chicago, illinois and encountered sudden loss of power after driving 205 miles at steady freeway speeds.the car (volvo s60, 2003 model) suddenly lost power and speed from 70 mph.i pulled over to the shoulder at a speed of 40 mph and turned off the engine.i waited 10 minutes and then started the engine and reentered the highway and was able to accelerate to 70 mph.after about 3-5 minutes the same loss of power occurred and the engine turned off and the oil light remained on.i once again pulled off to the shoulder, turned off the vehicle and called for tow assistance.the car was towed to a volvo dealer in , indiana (napleton auto) and left for 24 hrs.dealer reported no diagnostic evidence of problem and was unable to replicate the problem on non-highway drive tests.i subsequently drove the car on a return trip to louisville, ky ( 350 mi.) but with several stops along the way to rest the engine.this loss of power created a very serious safety risk.when the loss of power occurred i had a fast moving truck behind me and avoided an accident by quickly moving to the shoulder.i was very distressed by this experience.

I own a 2003 volvo s60, 4 dr sedan, purchased from don beyer volvo in falls church, va, serviced at don beyer volvo in dulles, va. The car has suddenly stalled in the middle of an intersection twice in the last 2 weeks but would re-start almost immediately. Last night, it stalled going 70 mph on a major highway with no warning whatsoever. I lost all power immediately and had to maneuver over lanes of traffic to pull over without power steering. Very dangerous situation. Towed to the dealership where they replaced the fuel pressure regulator and said they've had no other complaints of this sort. However, just tonight i saw a news report on channel 8 news in wash dc stating that volvo is being investigated for claims of this exact type. Did not see any mention of the s60 model so thought i would report my incident to be included in the investigation.

The oem jack that came with my volvo failed miserably when i had a flat tire. The jack was never used before this incident. While the jack was placed on a level surface and was completely vertical, the force necessary to spin the jack handle caused the jack to very slowly slide sideways in an increasingly precarious position. I stopped and started over several times only to render the same result. After several attempts, i was able raise the car high enough to attempt removal of the flat tire. The jack however was very unstable. While attempting to remove the tire, the jack failed and the car fell to the ground. Luckily, the flat tire was still on the car. Since i was in my paved driveway, i was able to use another jack. Since it wasn't a volvo jack, i was able to use wooden blocks to crib or secure the car by stacking wood under the car as the jack raised the car so it wouldn't fall off the jack.the volvo jack is bent and unsafe to use again, even though it wasn't safe to usethe first time. I am reporting it as i have found many other volvo owners on the web who had the same experience with their volvos.

While driving home after having steering rack replaced the dash lights (speedometer, turn signals, message center, etc.) went completely out.after multiple drives the dash lights go on and off intermittently while driving.

I have a 2003 s60 volvo. The instrument panel was fine yesterday, but when i got in the car today the panel instrument panel is completely black.this includes all gauges, speedometer, rpm, fuel, temp and blinkers, all gauges are off..(see attached pic).the vehicle was stationary in my driveway. The car still run great.

Driving car lights on dash board went completely off. Took it to shop they tap it and dash came on again, change fuse . Lights went off again and stayed off.

The turn signal lever broke without much force being placed on it. The plastic used to construct it may not have been of good quality. The part itself is costing me $100 for the lever and another $100 for labor. This should not be an issue with cars. I've never had anything like that happen to me before. The turn signal lever has a steel reinforcement bar going up part of it. Where the bar stops is where the piece broke off. It didn't even snap. The plastic just sort of peeled away. Not what i expect out of any car, especially a volvo.

We to have a 2003 s60 with a very bad fuel smell. We bought it used in 2006 from a volvo dealer in cary, nc. Of course, when i called volvo and gave them the vin #, they said that we were not covered. Our certified pre owned status expired in feb. Of this year. I really don't want to spend $700+ to get something fixed that has been a recurring problem for volvo.

Some models had a recall notice for a cracked leaking fuel pump (pe09039). This exact thing happened to our car. Volvo refuses to cover the vehicle under the recall because it was not sold in one of the states listed. The problem is exactly as described in the recall. This doesn't seem right as it the same safety issue. Please let me know if there is any further action that can be taken.

2003 volvo s60 sedan. Consumer states receipt of letter from volvo regarding extended warranty notice informing her that the vehicle has been fitted with a faulty fuel pump *tgwthe consumer stated instead of a recall, volvo suggested that the consumer only take the vehicle in for repairs if she smelled gas or had a gas leak.the consumer stated volvo was willing to put her life at risk rather than fixing the problem up front.

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60.while driving 35 mph, the entire vehicle began to shake, the service engine light illuminated, and the vehicle shut off.the weather conditions were rainy at the time of failure.the failure occurred in the middle of the road.the contact pulled off the highway and the vehicle restarted after 2-3 minutes.the dealer replaced the fuel pressure sensor, but the failure persists.the powertrain was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 63,000.

Car interior smelled of gasoline and gasoline leaking into passenger compartment and underneath car.took car to aaa repair facility where multiple leaks and malfunctions discovered and repaired.low mileage for year of car and no accidents.fuel level sensor assembly cracked and leaking - not the gasket - the fuel level sensor plastic housing failed.fuel pump module assembly leaking.

Vechile leaking gas and had strong gas smell.

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. While driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal odor of fuel in the vehicle. The contact stated that the rear seat was lifted and the seal was missing from the fuel tank. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 220,000.

Fuel leak coming from undercarriage passanger right rear seats, near fuel filter, off the top of the gas tank. Noticable smell and huge hazard for safety. What makes it presence detected is smell inside cabin after filling gas tank at fueling stations.

Fuel leaking from tank (most likely top of tank), when fuel pump is operating. Upon some search, i found that there was a recall for this problem for the s60 from 2001 to 2009.but for some reason my vin is not covered.seems like there's some loophole that they managed to use, why not all vins should be covered.its clearly a very dangerous failure.

The passenger side front door will not open from the inside.the car was brought to garden state volvo in wall, nj in march for this to be fixed.the mechanic "fixed" the inside cable with duct tape and charged us $175 for the repair.within a week the door was broken again.i called garden state volvo and asked for the part to repair this problem to be ordered.i have called several times and i have been told that the part is back-ordered and is coming from sweden.this is a very dangerous situation, in case of an accident the driver can not get out.

Front passenger side door, will not open from the inside and window will not roll down. Window locked in place and the motor struggles in its attempt to roll it down. Along with this a week later my sun roof decided not to open, in an attempt to open the sun roof- all you hear is a loud clicking sound. Even then it barely cracks open.

At approximately 85,000 miles on my 2003 volvo s60, the passenger front door failed to open. The dealer said a plastic part had broken inside the door panel and to correctly fix, it would be $845 and that the entire door panel would need to be replaced.they then said that if we wanted to accept the risk, they could go in and glue the piece and tie it for $162.volvo said they wouldn't be responsible although the part failure traps a person in the car not allowing the passenger to open their door from within. I went with the risky $162 option and it failed to work a month later.the front passenger door is inoperable from the inside of the car.it will open from the latch on the outside of the car.

While operating the vehicle a loud "bang" was heard from the rear of the vehicle causing a momentary moving disturbance (shimmy).upon stopping the vehicle to inspect, i noticed there was no longer any tension on the parking brake. Continuing to drive indicated that the brake was seized on one wheel and loose/rattling parts from somewhere near the rear wheel.further investigation has so far revealed that this may not be an uncommon problem for s60 volvos with repeated complaints appearing on enthusiasts sites including incidents of both rear wheels seizing while the vehicle is in operation.consultation with the two nearest volvo dealerships indicates no acknowledgment from volvo of the defect. It appears the problem may be with the internal parts associated with the return mechanisms in the parking brake assembly.as this is potentially a serious safety item i believe it would be beneficial to have the nhtsa review this problem as many s60 volvos will have reached similar service lives.

For both our 2001 volvo s60 2.4t and our 2003 volvo xc90 2.5t awd there have been unsuccessful attempts to repair a transmission defect (essentially same transmission in both vehicles per volvo tech support).between 2nd and 3rd there is . Intermittent/unpredictable failure to engage 3rd in timely fashion with resultant loss of acceleration as vehicle is functionally in neutral with engine racing for 0.5 to 2.5 seconds.this is extremely dangerous especially when pulling on to a highway.we have experienced 2 near collisions (almost being struck from behind).volvo tech support acknowledges a flaw in design causing servo fluid air lock in the 2001.a new transmission is scheduled to be replaced for our s60, but if the problem is still occuring in our 2003, will this correct the problem?the 2003 xc90 they say can be repaired with "upgraded software" (which is scheduled for that vehicle) but this remedy failed when performed on our 2001 s60.we have let the dealer know we feel both vehicles are unsafe with this problem and we are now stuck with them trying to remedy both glaring safety defects.we are not aware of a federally mandated recall to repair this acknowledged (safety) defect.

Dt:2003 volvo s60. Vehicle stalled at least 6 or 7 times at various speeds.transmission was replaceddue to stalling.

Vehicle continued to row when consumer removedfoot from the accelerator pedal when driving up an incline.dealer was notified, and they informed the consumer that was the normal characteristic of that vehicle.

The transmission of my s60 inadvertently mis-shifts at a variety of speeds. The problem happens at low speeds when backing off between gears and feels like it up shifts at an inappropriate time and speeds up. Other times the transmission will mis-shift upon acceleration causing high revs, with no power. Talked with volvo several times and first service visit paid $100 for a software upgrade that did nothing. Next time to service they checked the servos and stated they were ok. Last trip to service addressed issue w/ service rep and requested to have it documented. Service rep stated car had a 100k guarantee dismissed request. Car has 80k on it and problem seems to be increasing. Afraid it is a safety issue due to lack of control.

The seat belt can not be pulled out and therefore does not work.

Started the car on a very cold morning (around 0 f) started to drive and noticed a hot burning smell but couldn't see anything burning. Next day a little warmer started the car and noticed the same smell and the looking at the seat noticed a small burn hole on the side of the seat. Seat heaters were on both days. Immediately turned them off and the smell went away. Now i am afraid to use the seat heaters for fear of fire. One of the turns of the car was the seat warmers as i live in a fairly cold climate. And i also have an unsightly burn on the leather seats.

The vehicle is a 2003 volvo model s-60 t-5, purchased may 6, 2006.at the time of purchase, the vehicle was under the warranty of 50,000 miles and was serviced for warranty items by rickenbaugh volvo.the vehicle currently has 60,500 miles.upon using the seat warmers for the first time december 27, 2006, a small hole burned in the driver's seat from the seat heating element.smoke was coming out of the hole when i discovered the issue and i immediately turned off the seat warmer.i took the vehicle immediately (december 27, 2006) to volvo parts, inc. For inspection.there is a short in the heating element that makes this vehicle unsafe to drive.i called the volvo corporation customer service that same day and was told that the vehicle would not be repaired by the volvo corporation because it was no longer under warranty.i phoned rickenbaugh volvo that same day and was told the heating element and pad would need to be replaced at a cost of approximately $630.00.i am concerned that the heating element was improperly installed causing a short, or the element is defective.in any case, the product was defective when it was still under a warranty or improperly installed at the time of manufacture, but instead of addressing the safety issue, the volvo corporation is following its standard procedure of hiding behind its warranty terms.this is whatconcerns me the most.there was no injury to a person, however, the leather seat now has a hole from the small fire caused by the heating element.i have not repaired the defective element because of cost.please advise me as to what danger this may present, or what other options i have in this complaint process.i welcome a dot assigned engineer to inspect this vehicle for the cause of the fire.volvo parts, inc., only indicates that they checked connections and fuses and that they are "ok".i was charged $75.00 in labor.

The vehicle was not taken back to a dealer or an independent mechanic for a diagnostic test. The contact stated that was he afraid that while driving over a bump the struts might detach. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 126,000.

The steering has become less responsive and i experience steering wheel play, replacing fluid has not resolved this issue.

The inside door handles on my vehicle broke.i was able to get a new handle assembly for the passenger side, but the manufacturer has not been able to provide a new handle assembly for the driver's side door.the door cannot be opened from inside the vehicle.i've waited two months, but apparently the new part is not available.

2003 volvo s60 aw dashboard failure.i understand from talking with auto mechanics this is a common problem and is also recognized by auto electrical repair sites.this extremely dangerous with this loss of equipment.

Dt: the consumer states that 2003 volvo s60 has an inability to stop in reverse . The brakes failed and the car accelerated in reverse. This occurredafter the carstarted and sputtered. The consumertook the car to the dealer, and they said it was a software problem, the software was updated. But the car was still doing this. The consumerhas not called the manufacturer. The software was the only thing mentioned as being the problem with the car.the car has been doing this for about 2 years. Lately, the car has been doing this more frequently.

While driving home after having steering rack replaced the dash lights (speedometer, turn signals, message center, etc.) went completely out.after multiple drives the dash lights go on and off intermittently while driving.

Between 12/2004-6/2005 my 2003 volvo s60 lost power/ power decreases at varying speeds. The most significant was on the hwy going 65 mph. I had just accelerated to get onto the hwy in front of a semi truck. My car reached 65-70 mph and began to drop speeds - 65 to 55 to 50 to 40 with in seconds. The semi almost ran over me because the speeds dropped so fast. I caused 2 other cars on the hwy to go onto the side ramp otherwise it would have been a horrible crash with the semi. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer 3 times complaining of the same problem. The final time stating not to give the car back until it was fixed. The dealer said they downloaded new software to the car? if it happens again they can install a black box to record what is going on. What if the next time the semi does crash into me? the first time they had the car the labeled as pedal position sensor install/replace? the second time the invoice reads pressure sensor intake air replaced? ultimately, i saw the report in the news and recognized the issue to exactly what happens to my car. I noticed that you did not include 2003 s60's in your report. I know these should be looked at as well. I love my volvo i just don't feel very safe in it. Please contact me for any questions.

My husband and i drove our volvo (we are leasing this car) first time for a long trip (about 800 miles).the car mileage was about 13,000.after driving with the speed 75m/h for about 4 hours, we took an exit and lost control over the car.actually car took control.it shifted into neutral gear, jumped and stopped. It took a couple of minutes before car allowed to control itself.this scary experience repeated a few times on the road. Needless to say, it was a shocking experience.the first thing we did, we brought a car to a dealer.they informed us that the car was leased to us with outdated old software, that this software also had a glitch. That they had to download a new version of software.not a big deal, and it a mass production of volvo cars, and things like that happen all the time i was told by the volvo service.i did not believe it and could not believe it.call the volvo of north america customer service.sure enough, their representative, jenni with extension #1979 confirmed the same thing for me.she said it is a scary experience, but we updated your car software.i asked why this old, not safe version was given to me and her response was that they have no way to know when and what will happen with the software on the road.so what happens with their slogan that volvo is for life?any answers besides, well, it is a mass productions and the safety cannot be guaranteed.sorry for the emotions, if you who will be so kind to read my message would be hearing how happy and relaxed volvo representatives about this incident.any comments?thank you so much for you time.

The dash information system will randomly go blank and display srs failure. Along with all information lights start blinking on and off. The analog gauge like the speedometer and fuel gauge will go to "0" or just move eratically to any number or position while driving. At night the entire information center go blank the clock and the mileage(no lights at all).

My 03 volvo stalls at highway speeds resulting in a loss of power steering. This happens several times per trip, posing a very very dangerous situation. The vehicle stalls when letting off the gas pedal and occasionally when coming to a stop.

Dt:the contact s brought car todealer 3 times because itwill not start after sitting for awhile. . she owns a 2003 volvo model s60 2.4t.the first time it happened was on 8-12-05.the last time it happened on 8-27-05. Once it took over an hour for it to start up. Every time she fixed it, the problem recurred.it will intermittently not start. She was the original owner. She did not think she had the electronic throttle module (etm) replaced. Vehicle has not stalled while she was driving, but at times it surged forward.

On 12/22 i was driving my 2003 volvo s 60 awd. I was very slowly and carefully pulling into a front in parking spot. I was particularly careful because there was a driver sitting in the car parked to my right, and i did not want to get too close to his car. With my foot on the brake i was slowly moving into the spot. My front fender tapped the short concrete barrier at the front of the parking spot. The next thing i new, the car was rapidly accelerating forward. I was worried that i would go over the barrier and strike a brick wall in front of me. I believe that the engine block must havehit the short concrete barrier and that is what ultimately stopped the car. Despite the fact that i was inching into the spot at the slowest possible speed. The force of the acceleration was enough to crumple the whole front of my car, crack the windshield, and cause the passenger front air bag to release. I feel very certain that this represented unintended acceleration. I do not think there was any chance that i stepped on the gas instead of the brake. I am a very careful, cautious driver, and was very aware of what i was doing at the time without any distractions. I reported this to volvo customer service, who claims that after inspecting the car, they found no safety concerns. I am concerned that having volvo do their own inspection represents a conflict of interest.

While driving on i-290 the engine of my 2003 volvo s60 suddenly lost all power. I narrowly escaped several serious accidents on a busy chicago highway. When the car loses power there is absolutely nothing the operator can do to move over to the side. I was driving approx. 60 mph when this happened. The vehicle completely stalled, and i was able to restart the vehicle after approx. 30-60 seconds. The problems exhibited by the car are exactly the same as the recent recall that volvo has announced for volvo vehicles. My car is not included in this recall. The car is now stalling randomly at lower speeds.

The contact owns a 2003 volvo s60. The contact was driving 55 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where they replaced the electronic throttle assembly at the contacts expense. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The failure and current mileage was 64,000.

While driven from work. My car suddenly slow down and show a message. Reduced engine power. Then car stopped by it self.restart the car and engine start jumping. Need advise.

Recently while driving at speeds around 40 mph my car experienced a loss of speed and then stalled.each experience has been preceded by a brief loss and then by a more prolonged loss and finally a complete engine failure which locks up steering.in each instance the car has restarted. The mechanic said it was most likely a failure of the electronic throttle control module (etm).steps are currently being taken to replace the etm.

Had problems with car stalling at slow speeds, but all of a sudden while driving on a major highway at 65 mph and car lost power.we were able to glide to shoulder where car stalled.it restarted immediately, but about every 5 mi. The car would stall again.the service dept. At stamford volvotold me i had bad gas and they replace a senor in the fuel system.as soon as i left the dealership and got on the highway the car stalled again.i brought it back to the dealer. They serviced the car again and told me the water in the gas rusted some screen in the fuel system.they replaced it and thus far the car hasn't' stalled but there is still some hesitation while driving at high speeds.
