I have an srs airbag warning light stays on and will not go away. The electrical wiring for the headlights are faulty, i tried everything to fix them nothing works. I used an inline fuse with the headlight wiring because the bulbs the continue to blowout. The volvo forum suggested the inline fuse to fix the issue, but it did not. One headlight remains on the driver side and the passenger side comes on and off when it wants to and it also displays dipped bulb failure or beam failure.

My daughter was stopped at a red light and surrounded by cars on a four lane road.all of sudden the passenger side air bags deployed causing my daughter to panic thinking she was on fire due to the smoke and explosion.she exited the car in traffic and called me and the police.nobody else was in the car at any time and no event inside or outside took place that caused the deployment.police and volvo dealer inspected the car and found no evidence that would cause a deployment.volvo paid to replace all parts and sent sensors to get tested.test came back indicating there was a definite event that caused deployment.this is why i am reporting this incident , the testing they performed indicating an event took place that caused deployment is contrary to physical evidence collected by police and volvo dealer and eye witness accounts. Either volvo's testing is faulty or something worse has happened.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the entire instrument panel failed. After stopping the vehicle and restarting, the panel and the air bag warning light was illuminated. The dealer was contacted and they advised her that the air bag may need replacement. The vehicle was neither inspected nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and the current mileage was approximately 130,000.

The consumer believes that eh vehicle was involved in a frontal collision prior to her purchasing the vehicle.the vehicle has a cracked transmission, power steering leak, oil leak and two deployed air bags.

Consumer states while driving the vehicleat 25mph, the vehicle was in a frontal accident with another vehicle. Consumer states that both of the front air bags did not deploy. Dealer notified.ts

My daughter was in a frontal collision with another car (2001 volvo s60), there were no other passengers.most of the damage was to the front left of her car; however, only the passenger side airbag deployed.her speed before breaking was ~50 mph; the car was totaled.although my daughter was not seriously injured i consider this a safety issue since the velocity was great enough for the passenger side airbag deploy.additionally, the side curtains did not deploy.of what value is a malfunction safety device?other than a fault light (which was not lit) how can one be certain an airbag is function properly?

Right front power window inoperable from either side switch control.power door locks do not respond to remote.ambient temprarture readout inoperable.dealer claimed to have upgrade component software.position bulb outage error text:replaced right rear position bulb.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. Without warning, the vehicle failed to accelerate over 20 mph. The vehicle drastically reduced speed and stalled several times without warning. The vehicle was excluded from nhtsa campaign number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

Error text lamps outages:2 brake lamp bulbs, 2 tag lamp bulbs and a right rear position bulb replaced.

The electronic throttle modulator (etm) in my 01' volvo s60, like many others, has become faulty.while sitting idle or in drive, the rpm's will fluctuate erratically causing what seems to be bursts in acceleration and near stalls.consequences of this defect include impromptu breaking to correct rpm fluctuations.the car was diagnosed a month ago by a certified volvo dealer with a failing etm.my wife and i are saving money so that the repair can be done.hopefully volvo recalls the part so that we can have ours replaced asap before more severe complications occur.

While driving at approx 40 mph, i heard a popping noise and a message came on in the dash stating "reduced emission service".i was able to drive at a maximum of 10 mph for 5 miles to my nearest volvo dealership.my mileage was just about 69,000 miles.the technician diagnosed it as an electronic throttle module failure and replaced the etm.the car handled properly after the repair, which was covered under the 7 year/70,000 mile extended emissions warranty.the old part was returned to volvo cars north america.

Right front power window and lock in operable.left (driver's side) door look switch inoperable.ambient temperature readout inoperable.

Intermittent problem.2001 volvo s60 t5.vehicle will fail to shift gears when accelerating.usually occurs when proceeding from a stop, usually when turning.took vehicle to the dealer, princeton volvo, and although their mechanic experienced the problem, they indicated that they did not know what could cause the problem. Now i learn that volvo has had numerous reported similar problems, usually involving the electronic throttle control modulator.it should also be noted that the aforesaid dealer attempted to remedy the problem by making a software change, but this only made the problem worse.

The entire instrument panel went dead and the turn signals would not function.only the headlights were working.messages came up saying that there was an srs airbag issue and that there was a brake failure.all of the messages were false and the instrument cluster went dead.this is a concern since the messages are incorrect according to what the dealer told me and have seen several people with the same issue.i think that volvo should replace all of the dims and cems for every car that exhibits this problem the first time for vehicles under 125,000 miles.this should not happen and is a very big safety issue.this is not the first time that the cluster has gone dead.also each time it has been raining and the dealer has said that there are no shorts in the system.something is wrong and they are replacing every part without fixing the issue.

Car stalled while driving then would not go any faster than 15mph.

Car jerks and clunks when switching gears. Its starting to grind and clack in 1-2 gear and i hops around the rpms line crazy.

Electrical problems: first, the light bulbs, including headlights, brake lights, and turn signals, on my 2001 volvo s60 had to be replaced at least every two months. This is causing problems with visibility and also with the local police department -- they don't like it when i'm driving through town with no lights on.second, the interior lamps above my dashboard and the sunroof stopped working on an intermittent basis. For no seen reason, i won't be able to open or close the sunroof (not great when it's raining and i can't get it closed) and the lights won't work either.

In october 2007,i inquired of fields volvo of waukesha wisconsin, about a malfunctioning temperature gage. The gage would often display a faulty reading, showing that the car was overheating when in fact it was not. When i bought my car in for an inspection of the matter, jason fischer service advisor, informed me that i needed an electronics bo ( see attached receipt). He assured me that was the problem, so i agreed to allow him to replace it and was charged $537.15 for the procedure. However, a year later in july 2008, the problem resurfaced. Eventually, the cooling fan malfunctioned and would not shut off. This problem also caused the battery to drain. Itook my car to auto werks import centre in milwaukee, wisconsin, who through research of the problem, found that there was a recall issued for the cooling fan in november 2004. I was also charged $200.53 for replacement of a temperature sensor and the thermostat. (see attached receipt) as a satisfied volvo customer for over 10 years, i feel that had thorough research been done prior to malfunctioning of the cooling fan, excess charges could have been avoided.i am therefore seeking a partial refund of maintenance charges. Your immediate response to my request would be most appreciated.

I bought this used 2001 volvo s60 with 54k on it. Found out that has this problem of computer shutting down with no warnings and there's onlypower to radio and the a/c fan...no signals no instrument panel and nothing worked. There was all these messages saying brake failure, emission control failure and srs failure message. Engine ran as long as it was on, once turned off would not start again. The car computer resets by itself in about 10-15 minutes. Took it to volvo dealer two times explaining the details. They did a software upgrade, cleared the codes and reset the computer. Both times, the car worked for a while but happened again. Two days ago happened in the freeway and i almost had a crash (no signals and also couldn't open windows to hand signal). I feel like they are aware of the problem, but don't want the consumer to know about it so they keep doing the cheap fix of clearing code until next time. I'm really concerned about the safety of the car now especially in the freeway.

I have a 2001 volvo s60 t5.in october 2004 i was driving down the street when i had a sudden loss of power and the vehicle went from going 45 mph to 5 mph, i was able to pull over and shut off the vehicle.i waited a fee minutes and started the vehicle without any problems and was able to drive home.this happened a second time the next day and i called volvo and they told me to bring the car in.as i was driving to the dealership i was approximately 1/2 mile away and it happened a third time.this time the problem did not correct itself and i had to have the vehicle towed.i was told that my electronic throttle body needed to be replaced and because i was past 50k it was not covered by the warranty.i had purchased an extended warranty to 74k however they stated that this part was not covered by the extended warranty either.i paid over $1000.00 to have the part replaced.the old part was kept by volvo of las vegas.

While stopping at a traffic light, i noticed all the warning lights on the lower right side of the instrument panel came on and immediately went off, no other indications.while waiting at the light, everything appeared normal.when the light changed to green, i pushed on the gas pedal to pull away and nothing happened.the car would not accelerate at all.no lights were on.i pushed to gas pedal to the floor and back up and then half way down, absolutely nothing worked.it would not go any faster than idle.no increase in rpm's at all, no matter what position the gas pedal was in.i'm in the fast lane at rush hour and could only go about 4 miles per hour.i managed to work my way over theside of the road and pull into a parking lot.i stopped and put the car into park.i heard a "click" as if a relay was reset.i then put the car into reverse and it seemed to work.i put it in drive again and everything appeared to work okay after that.i took it to turner volvo, here in sacramento, ca and they said they couldn't duplicate the problem and there weren't any codes in the computer so there was nothing they could do.this was an "extremely" dangerous situation and could have caused a very serious accident, made worse by the fact that my 5 year old niece was with me at the time this happened.we could have been killed and turner volvo says there's nothing they can do.well turner, thanks for nothing and for taking our lives so lightly.maybe someday a member of your family will be involved in an accident caused by this problem and then we'll see what you think.this is an ongoing problem with volvo's and needs to be taking care of by the manufacturer not the people who trusted you enough to buy your cars.

When i apply pressure to the brake pedal i get an error message sometimes, not always, that says "check brake lights". When the message is up, the left and right brakes in the back of the vehicle do not illuminate, but the middle one in the back of my rear window still does. When the message goes away, all lights illuminate.

Dt:2001 volvo s60.the consumer states in traffic the vehicle will cut out and it will not move.when tryingto pull over to the side of the road it will come back on.thishappened three times. Vehicle was taken to the dealership to be inspected.they found that there was a malfunction with the electronic control module.this would cost the consumer $400 to fix it. This first happened on may 26, 2005 ,and most recently onaugust 1, 2005.

My wife drove the 2001 volvo s60 and noticed a noxious burning smell and immediately drove it home.she thought it was something extremely wrong with the heater.i drove the car 3 days later and after 3 minutes noticed the burning smell as well.i turned off the heater, and the smell continued.i saw some smoke to my left side and noticed the seat had a hole that was melting and burning.i turned off the heated seat and ensured the seat did not burn further.

On vacation, driving 50 mph on four-lane hwy 17 in south carolina when the car suddenly and without warning lost power and came to a complete stop in the highway. It would not restart. As traffic rushed by, my wife and i had to push the car off the road. After about 5 minutes of trying to restart, the car finally started and acted normally. We were within 20 miles of our destination, so we started out again only to stall about a quarter mile later. We coasted off the road and had the car towed 20 miles to the nearest volvo dealer. Dealer replaced the throttle control module. Car had 45k miles on it, but was 3 months out of warranty so we had to pay entire $850 bill. Despite our repeated requests, neither the s.c. Dealer nor our local dealer in m.o. Would help us with the cost.

My 2001 s 60 volvo sedan loses power during acceleration.the rpms race but the vehicle feels like it's going to stall.i have brought this vehicle back to the dealership 5 times for the same complaint.on the fifth time, they replaced the electronic throttle module. That was on august 1, 2005.since the problem was intermittent, i can't tell yet if the problem has been fixed.

Lower brake lights fail while upper rear windshield light continues to work. Had this work done once in 2005 to correct the wiring situation and now it is having to be done again. I feel this is completely dangerous for both brake lights to fail at the same time. Reading online forums has led me to believe this is a widespread issue with the 2001 volvo s60.

While driving, sun roof failed to open and interior lights would not turn on. Brought to volvo dealer and service manager claimed the exxon/mobil speed pass that was attached to the key chain caused the electrical interference such that these items could not work. If this is the case, isn't this a hazard for thousands of other volvo drivers with speed pass and volvo cars? what other electrical equipment could fail while driving?

I have an srs airbag warning light stays on and will not go away. The electrical wiring for the headlights are faulty, i tried everything to fix them nothing works. I used an inline fuse with the headlight wiring because the bulbs the continue to blowout. The volvo forum suggested the inline fuse to fix the issue, but it did not. One headlight remains on the driver side and the passenger side comes on and off when it wants to and it also displays dipped bulb failure or beam failure.

Power outlets are inoperable again.brake lamps outage again.replace fuse and bulbs.

When the vehicle was at idle it shook.the dealership cleaned the throttle, but the problem still existed. *nlmafter many times of going to the dealer for repairs, the timing valves were found to be a problem in which theywere fractured.also, the electrical bulbs in the front and tail had failed.scc

The vehicle head/tail lights continued to fail due to an electrical problem.*nlm

The (adaptives/computer system) in the vehicle shut down the engine twice.one situation the driver was riding down a hill when the vehicle shut down.the steering wheel snatched out his hand immediately and veered into another lane. Nlm

Electrical problem in volvo s60 2001. Ts

Power outlets inoperable.dealer service replaced fuse (20 amp blade yellow).

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. The contact stated that there was a failure in which the throttle body failed to function properly. The contact experienced the failure when making a turn or while driving various speeds. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and indicated that the time frame had expired for the vehicle to be repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control). The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer. The failure mileage was not available.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. While driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle stalled and the brakes and power steering malfunctioned without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 173,000.

Engine stalled on numerous occasions.

I commute approximately 30 miles to work. During my commute on nov. 2, 2005 there was nothing out of the ordinary. All gauges reading within normal limits. I parked my car. Went inside my place of work. Within 7 (seven) minutes i was notified by a coworker that my car was on fire. The resulting engine fire totaled my 2001 s60 t5 volvo. There was nothing left of the engine except the engine block sitting upon the transmission.

Sudden loss of power while leaving a parking lot.the speed dropped to below 20 mph.i was unable to drive above 20 mph.the car was towed to the dealer who subsequently replace the electronic throttle control at a cost of over $900.

When the vehicle was at idle it shook.the dealership cleaned the throttle, but the problem still existed. *nlmafter many times of going to the dealer for repairs, the timing valves were found to be a problem in which theywere fractured.also, the electrical bulbs in the front and tail had failed.scc

Volvo s60 2.4t 2001; stalls without warning when accelerating at speeds in excess of 50 miles an hour, warning lights come on, car will restart after a few minutes.has happened 3 times in 3 days.in the shop today for repair.

The car would suddenly cease to accelerate not going over twenty miles per hour. The car was taken to the volvo dealership where the emt was cleaned. Under an extended warranty. 10 days later the car without warningwent into the 'limp home mode again" the car was returned to volvo this time i was told the engine control module was faulty and needed replacement and the etm was not the problem this part was out of warranty and would cost over $2,000 to replace or i could trade in the car. I feel that this too should be taken care of sine the ecm directs the activity of the etm and was not initially identified as the problemif this does not correct the problem someone could be seriously injured when trying to merge onto the freeway or crossing intersections.

Dt: consumer stated2001 volvo s 60was having a problem with the unit that regulated the air flow into the brakes and engine. The car was making a hissing sound, like air being let into the cabin. This was happening a lot, especially in the heat. The brakes had to be depressed to get the car to stop.consumer had the car fixed last week at the dealership; the mechanic informedconsumerthat the air pump to the brakes had to be replaced. This vehicle was not stalling,or losingpower, nor were therenear misses.consume r was just responding to this because of what she saw on the news. The warranty expired.repairs weredone atconsumer'sexpense.

Car would suddenly lose power, causing unsafe situations in traffic.warning light would come on along with check engine light and message saying "reduced performance".failure was intermittent at first and instrument lights would go back to normal.

I have a 2001 volvo s60 t5 and i've been noticing lately the idle on my rpm side going up and down rapidly and the car feels like its going to turn off. Then yesterday the same thing happened and the car shut down and i turned it back on and it begin trying to push itself so i got scared and parked it. Luckily it was by my home and then today i went to retrieve it and it begin doing the same thing.people have been complaining about this problem. I saw some media coverage about this problem due to the throttle body module. Please help and try to get this part recalled because someone can get seriously hurt or even god forbid pass away due to this problem. Thank you.

At 53,000 miles (february 2006) my check engine light, service transmission light and urgent service warning lights came on at the same time.however, i wasi not experiencing any noticeable drivability issues. (with the exception of some slightly rough gear shifting - but i didn't think much of it).the dealer told me that the fault code was related to my transmission and that i need a software upgrade to my tcm (transmission control module).if the fault code returned after the upgrade, my transmission would have to be replaced.and that most likely (99.9%) the software upgrade would correct the problem.in addition, i had to pay $340 for the software upgrade because i was 6 months / 3,000 miles out of warranty and software issues where not covered by the extended warranty (3rd party - easycare -[via ford]). A few weeks later (3/5/06), the check engine comes on again and the drivabilitydeteriorates rapidly on my trip home from work.high rpm's - little power - abrupt shifting. Fortunately, i was close to home (within 1 mile).it felt like the transmission fell apart.i brought it to the dealer (3/8/06), after two days of 'testing', i'm told the etm was replaced at no charge and to come pick up the car.i picked it up and could not leave the dealer driveway.they apologized profusely and said the etm was replaced but noticed that there is still a problem.after a few days of troubleshooting by the dealer, i was informed that the car needed a new transmission (and i had to pay an additional $200 for extended warranty co-pay).

On saturday april 2, 2005 ,at about 3:00 p.m., i was returning home with my wife and daughter from a spring break trip to washington d.c.we had driven for a good part of the day through difficult conditions...considerable rain and even a some snow showers in eastern ohio.while driving on the ohio turnpike in the vicinity of toledo, the vehicle suddenly lost power, that is, the car decelerated regardless of foot-pressure on the gas pedal.although i was at the time in the middle lane of a rather busy interstate highway, i was able to pull over to the right shoulder of the highway, where the car stopped running altogether.i let the car sit for a minute, and then attempted to start the engine again.although the engine turned over it would not run.through information provided by geico insurance roadside assistance facility were able to summon a tow truck, which delivered the car, and my family to a volvo dealership schmidt in perrysburg, ohio at about 5:00 p.m. On that saturday evening. This incident, apart from considerable inconvenience and cost, put my family and mein a very hazardous situation. Partly because of the presence of a guardrail, the vehicle came to rest only inches away from the line separating the highway shoulder from the right lane.because of the heavy traffic much of it consisting of massive trailer-trucks traveling west i think it reasonable to say that the exposure to risk was high.had the weather very chilly temperatures, a piecing north wind, and the ever-present threat of rain been any better i would have guided my family tothe shelter of an overpass about one quarter-mile to the west until the tow-truck arrived.fortunately, officer mack of the ohio highway patrol arrived after about 20 minutes, and alerted passing traffic to the roadside hazard with the flashing lights of his patrol car.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving at no particular speed, the engine oil pressure light illuminated.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection.the dealer determined metal shavings were present in the oil pan resulting in the engine needing replaced and no repairs were made.additionally, the transmission would not intermittently shift out of park.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and repair.

Emission service error text appeared intermittently after only two months of ownership.service at dealer reset the module.less than a month later same message appeared with engine knock.dealer replaced knock sensor twice but to no avail...then replace the engine on this certified used vehicle.

(1) driving on interstate at maximum legal speed for several hours.(2) engine abruptly stops without warning resulting in loss of power steering and brakes.attempts to restart engine while moving not successful.negotiate through traffic to shoulder of road, narrowly avoiding accident.(3) vehicle sat on side of road for approximately five minutes and then restarted without any problems.were able to continue trip and return home.(4)took vehicle to dealership.engine was checked, but no problems found.(5)this has occurred two times during the four years we have owned vehicle ..

I proceeded to pass a vehicle and lost power could only drive at approx.35m.p.h. I then had to brake and return behind and to the side of the road. I took it in for repair and was told it was a software error.

I have a 2001 volvo s60 with a fuel leak on top of the fuel pump assembly.

2001 volvo s60 gas leak at top of gas tank. Strong smell of gas in garage. Gas leak close to exhaust pipe. Leak not large. Small puddle on ground and passenger side of gas tank wet from top of tank down (mid way up tank).

Making a left turn, changing lanes, slowing down. Engine revved up to near maximum. I was able to control the vehicle. After engine returned to normal speed, no further problems until 12/14/11. On that date, a repeat of the surge.i have owned this car for 7 years. These incidents happened only after the last service at the dealer.

I bought my 2001 volvo s60 n/a brand new at the end of 2001.since up to about september of 2007, i had no problems with the vehicle except routine service.then i noticed loud "clanging" and "metallic thumping" whenever i went over rough roads at any speed.turns out that my control arm bushings (be they ever poorly made) cracked into pieces.took my vehicle to my independent volvo shop to repair the bushings.the technician, after the repairs were done, notified me that there was a fuel leak coming from the rear fuel tank area.funny that it was that exact week that i started to notice the gasoline smell, be so ever faint.as of today, september 22, 2008, the smell has become very strong where as even with the windows open while driving, i literally have to stick my nose against the open window to breathe in what should be fresh air.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. While operating the vehicle, an odor of fuel was present and the contact discovered fuel present on the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump was faulty and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system). The contact indicated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 145,000. Updated 02/10/16*lj; updated 05/10/18

I recently noticed a gas odor in my garage coming out from the bottom of my volvo. It appears to be the fuel pump. After a brief research it appears if you live in nevada or arizona your fuel pump can be change free of charge. But not in california where my volvo uses the same fuel pump. Help!

Fuel tank overflows before tank is full and spills fuel on drvier and ground. Happens constantly each time i try to fill the tank. Bought the vehicle with the problem, but i was not apprised by the previous owner. Checked the internet and the problem is very common among volvo vehicles, especially this model. Volvo refuses to issue a recall and instead wants customers to pay for the repair.

While at the gas station to fuel up, the gas cap door hinge broke and the door fell off .

I was planning to go into work a bit later than usual so i loaded up my two youngest boys into the car for my wife, after she pulled out i noticed numerous wet spots on my carport, there is enough tree pollen on the carport that it holds the fuel evidently for an extended period of time. Upon seeing the spots on the carport i ran my finger through the area and before i had my hand within a foot of my nose i could clearly identify the smell. I normally leave for work hours before my wife and kids depart for school and i normally arrive hours after they are home, it has taken me a while to notice the problem and discover the source. Our carport is open on three sides, in the last two weeks we have noticed a very strong gasoline smell, i thought it was from a gas can i kept nearby. After removal of the gas can we continued to smell the gasoline, it is so strong that even in an open area it will actually make you nauseous within minutes.i questioned my wife about her gas mileage and any out of the ordinary performance in the care lately, she stated that the gas mileage has decreased severely in the past couple of months and the car runs very rough as far as idling and acceleration. I used a floor jack to raise the left side of the car and discovered that the gas tank has a leak on the top of it or the outlet fuel line above the tank has a leak. Normally the car can be driven by my wife for her day to day purposes for two weeks on a full tank now it will not make one full week. There has been no incident where anyone was seriously hurt but i believe that the amount of fuel leaking could be a fatal defect at some point if not discovered and repaired properly. I did some investigating on the internet and discovered the filing and recall in arizona and nevada id # 07v152000. I have to wonder who decided that these two states were the only one's hot enough to have this problem? i have taken numerous pictures and would be happy to supply them if necessary.thank you

I owned a 1991 volvo s60 sedan and i understand you are investigating this car. From time to time as i drove it, it would unexpectedly loose speed and power for a few seconds and then resume. It never fully stalled out. I had mentioned this at a service time for the car but nothing wrong was uncovered. Recently my daughter was driving the car on interstate 5 south of la when the car engine ceased functioning while she was driving in the hov lane.fortunately the driver was able to coast to the shoulder through traffic without getting hit. The easily could have been hit and she could have died and we never would have known it was a vehicle failure. The car was towed to a dealership where i was told they eventually diagnosed a "failed fuel pump". I have no validation of this. I did not want to drive this car again and it was lease-end so i traded the car in that very day for a new car.

Incredibly strong gas smell after 4 consecutive weeks of temps over 100 degrees. Slight gas leakage at fuel pump. I have 2 small children transported in this car everyday and volvo will not extend the recall to any other states.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. The contact stated that there was an overpowering gasoline smell coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and where the contact was advised that the fuel pump was leaking fuel and needed to be replaced. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline: delivery fuel pump), but was advised by the dealer that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 108,895.

I needed to replace a fuel pump on my volvo s60 after just five years.i smelled gas and it concerned me. When i took it in, they wanted me to replace the fuel pump. I felt it should be covered under warranty and was upset about it.when i did some research i found that volvo has had a problem with their fuel pumps. I wrote a formal letter complaining to volvo which they did nothing about.i noticed that there was a recall in nevada and arizona.why not california?

I have a 2001 s60 volvo, with 190,000 miles on it.fuel has been leaking from the rear of vehicle.i found out that volvo has a recall on the problem-- nhtsa(09v483000). The local dealer said the car was out of warranty and they would not replace the cracked fuel pump housing under this recall.is there a time limit or miles limit on a safety recall.*4/28/2010 cw

Vehicle is hard to start, coupled with a strong fuel smell emitting from the fuel tank fill neck.

Hard starting and faint smell of fuel, especially in hot weather.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. The contact stated the vehicle had a strong smell of gasoline. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump) and took the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer advised that the smell of gasoline was from caused buy the same failure as described in the recall, but the contact's vehicle was not included. The vin was not available. The current and the failure mileages were 128,900.

First event--normal vehicle operation- 33000 miles 48 months old. Stalled turning left through busy intersection at rush hour--loss power steering capability almost ran off road toward light post--no accident occurred. (may, 2005)no repairs.second event--normal vehicle operation (35,250)-stalled going through intersection oct. 4 2005.no accident.--electronic throttle modulator cleaned --{given option of cleaning $220 (with no guarantee) or replacing for $970 (still with no guarantee)}

Recently noticed car was difficult to start and car smells like gas.these events seemed to have started at approximately the same time and there has been no physical event (crash, impact) that initiated the complaint.it appears to have started in mid summer where it is operated in south florida, and i get in the car at 4pm to 107 degrees on the temp reading. I have done nothing, but have concern about safety issues and possible fire hazard.

I had an oil change and soon thereafter, i noticed that the car has a strong smell of gasoline.this has been happening for a week and i am afraid to drive the car.this is my only car and i need to know if there is a recall on this since there seem to be a good number of complaints.

There is a strong fuel odor at the rear of my 2001 volvo s60. It is stronger when i have a full tank of gas. I found out that there is a recall for this exact problem (odi # 09v483000) so i took it to a dealership to have it fixed. They confirmed that my fuel pump is leaking but said the recall expires after 150k miles. My car has 161k miles on it. I called volvo and they also said my vehicle is no longer covered.

2001 volvo s60 - gas leak from above the fuel tank.strong gas odor, discovered fuel dripping down side of tank under vehicle on passenger's side. Drove for at least 2 weeks or more before i figured out it was my car that creating that gas smell at lights (only noticed when window was down). Until vehicle began leaking a lot of gas and odor was over powering.was told volvo's "extended warranty" would not cover the defective fuel pump because the "extended warranty" was only for 10 years or 150,000 miles.had vehicle repaired at my expense.one day after repairan even worse gas leak appearedunder vehicle on driver's side above rear gas tank. Not resolved as of date of complaint.puddle of gas under vehicle. Gas odor strong really afraid to drive it back to the mechanic. Additional complaint:intermittent lurching or surging of same volvo s60 at low speeds shortly after starting.it lunges forward and then pulls back with no depressing of accelerator.it is a manual transmission so the lurching is very alarming considering no additional depression of the accelerator is happening when it randomly lunges forward.usually stops lungingafter 10 minutes of driving.

I began noticing a strong gasoline odor in my garage. Since no fuel is stored there i knew it was coming from my vehicle, a 2001 volvo s60. I tried to identify a leak source but was unable to do so. The gas smell is strongest at the passenger side front wheel well. I am concerned that at some point a fire may result. I took the car in to a local shop and had it up on a lift. Neither the tech nor i was able to id a leak, but i am still having the strong gas odor.

Leak on fuel pump, we had to replace leaking fuel pump but paid ahead.need to know how to send the invoice for reimbursement since there is a recall on this model. Recall #07v152000volvo s60 2001.

Fuel odor when exiting vehicle after parking.fuel residue observed on the side of the gas tank when looking under the vehicle.dealer not sure if covered by extended warranty.update 1/9/09: web user comments:issue resolved, vehicle repaired under extended warranty. However, to be sure i was covered before visiting the dealer, i had to remove the seat bottom and the pump cover and verify the fuel leak was at the top of the fuel pump. Strong fuel smell from rear of car and pump leaking at tank.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. While parked, a strong odor of fuel emitted outside of the vehicle on the front passenger side. There was no fuel visible on the ground. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who noticed that fuel was leaking from the top part of the fuel tank. The vehicle was also taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump would need to be replaced. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v483000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 109,999.updated 12/01/15*lj,03/28/18

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60 t5.the contact smelled gas fumes inside the vehicle.the mechanic stated that there was a crack in the fuel system.the manufacturer stated that his vin was not included in nhtsa recall # 9515498898.the powertrain information was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 110,000.

2001 volvo s60 t5 w/manual transmission stalled abruptly with a "reduced power" message on the dashboard computer display while accelerating on a highway onramp.this was a very dangerous situation, as another vehicle was behind me and came close to colliding with my vehicle due to immediate deceleration w/no warning/brake lights until i was able to react to the unexpected situation.after pulling over, stopping the car for a few minutes and restarting, i was able to continue driving it, but it seemed to run rough and "stutter" a bit for the rest of the trip.drove to local volvo dealership first thing next morning and resulting diagnosis & repair was "throttle unit internal fault" and replacement of the electronic throttle module (etm).engine fault codes were: ecm 915d, 916d, 904c, 928a & 903f.repairs totaled $1,012.03.

My volvo s60 is idling very rough. It is not showing any codes but i suspect it's the etm. After doing some research on vexed's website i have concerns about the safety of this car due to the improper design of the etm made by magneti marelli. I'm hoping stephen mchenry will get volvo to redesign this ill designed part.

I own a 2001 volvo s60.i smelled gasoline when i started the vehicle, but the manufacturer has not indicated a problem.wheni reviewed the recalls for this vehicle on www.nhtsa.gov, i noted the following problem under review:pe06-053 2001 volvo s60 fuel pump leakage 15-nov-2006 i believe the problem i am experiencing is related to this item.i wish to be contacted if this becomes a recalled item by the nhtsa.

Strong smell of fuel within the passenger compartment.local volvo service had to replace the fuel pump which is located directly under the rear seat of the passenger compartment.appears to be similar to the recall of cars in nevada and arizona, but although florida also exhibits similar climate conditions, does not pertain to fl vehicles per volvo.gasoline fumes were very strong & could have very likely resulted in fire.this seems to be a very very serious design flaw.volvo charged over $900 to repair.auto has only 32,000 miles on it.

Need replacement fuel pump, this part has been recalled in arizona and nevada but no where else.

2001 volvo s60 failure of gas pump. Strong gas odor leaking gas thru top of pump, hard to start, dangerous leading to hazardous events. Volvo acknowledges that there is a problem with the fuel pump but only offers a recall in two states they consider to have hot climates. I live in the state of florida and they do not consider this to be a recall state. Let me tell you it is over 80 degrees in winter time and well over high 90's in summer and over 100 if you factor in the humidity. I fixed the car it cost me $642.01, i would like for volvo to pay me back. The cost of the pump and seal were $400.00 alone. I think that as a consumer i should be protected not only that, but what is volvo waiting to warn people of this deffect. This is a deadly situation do not wait until somebody dies for you to take action, the fire and gas inhalation are catastrophic. I have all the paper work i would like to get my money back and i would like for the owners of volvo's to be aware of this situation. Thank you for your time. Please do not wait for somebody or a family to die before yopu take action.

Approximately 10/25/07 began to smell strong fuel fumes emanating from volvo 2001 s-60 along with a difficulty in starting the vehicle.on-line investigation and discussion with volvo specialist repair shop indicates issue related to faulty fuel pump / filter which the corporation is currently recalling only nevada and arizona......volvo specialist indicated that they are seeing numerous vehicles (in jacksonville florida) with the same issue.obviously a safety concern when strong fuel fumes are noticeable around the vehicle....

I have a volvo s60 which perfectly fits the description that people were giving as a complaint for volvo recall no. R176. I have a strong odor of gas and hard starting. I looked at the fuel pump myself and it is cracked. I contacted volvo and they said since i don't live in nevada or arizona i'm not covered, then they stated its because of the heat. Then i told them i live in florida its hot here too. Then they said it has to do with the sulfur content in the gas. After contacting both the florida epa and the arizona epa i found that the sulfur content in ppm is identical. I presented this information to gainesville volvo and volvo of america. And they still refuse because i'm not in arizona or nevada.

2001 volvo s60 t5, 100,800 miles.the following condition has been intermittent over the last month or so, but is now consistent to the point to be able to be located.we are experiencing extreme gasoline order within and around the vehicle in hotter weather (>90f).living in phoenix summer vehicle temps exceed 110f on a daily basis.when contacting local volvo dealer, the service writer stated that he is seeing a lot of failures of the fuel pump which vents fumes at higher temperatures.fuel pump still operates fine.a quick search of the internet indicate that this issue is becoming more common. We now leave the vehicle outside of the garage for fear of an explosion ignited by the homes' hot water heater.quoted repair is $612. I own a 2001 volvo s60 2.4t.i have lately noticed a strong gasoline odor on the passenger side of the vehicle.i have taken the vehicle to the dealer and they tell me the gasoline pump needs to be replaced because there is a plastic cap the joins the pump to the gas tank that is cracked and that is causing gasoline to leak.i have researched with several service shops, and they tell me they have seen many occurrences with these model for that problem, which for a 5 year old car seems unacceptable.it is a very expensive part and labor and it seems it all caused because of a defective plastic "cap" that joins the pump to the tank.i had the dealer replace the part, but seems to me this is a major problem that should be covered by a manufacturer's recall.also, the car has plastic or fiberglass molding that run on top between the doors and ceiling that have built up a lot of rust, which again the dealer states are not covered under any warranty, but again, for a 5 year old car seems unacceptable.

My car gives off a strong gas/fuel smell, which is not coming from under the hood, but can be smelled both inside and outside the car.it has about 74,000 miles on it, and is less than 8 years old.i noticed the smell now for many months, which continues to get stronger.i saw that there is a recall for the cars in arizona and nevada, but i live in florida, where it can get pretty hot as well.i believe the problem is with the fuel pump.this problem must be happening quite often with other volvo s60s.the problem may stem from a poorly designed plastic pump housing.i took the car in for the volvo etm warranty program on 08/15/07 thinking that the fuel smell would be corrected when they fixed the emission system problem.the dealer's receipt indicates they performed a fuel induction service because of throtle body dirt, but the fuel smell has only gotten worse.i don't want to have to spend $$$ to have it repaired, when it is a manufacturing defect.what can i do?

Fuel pump is leaking, causing car to smell like gasoline.potential fire hazard.

My 2001 volvo s60 started smelling like gas inside the car. I took it to the volvo specialist who services my car and he said that it was caused by a cracked fuel pump casing. He said that in the last month he has seen 5 or 6 2001 volvos with the same problem. I searched the internet and found that the problem is becoming commonly reported and that volvo acknowledges the problem in nevada and arizona. I think they need to include south florida. I contacted the dealer where i purchased the car and the service rep said they have seen quite a few cards with the same problem and that while volvo would not do anything to help me, they - the dealership - would replace the part for only labor ($130 x 5 hours) and not charge the $500+ part.

I am the original owner of a 2001 volvo s60; noted a strong gasoline odor in the garage and at the right side of the vehicle (noted during extreme summer weather in south).car was taken to volvo certified repairshop and was noted to have a leak at the fuel pump.the pump needed to be replaced- total expense of $810.00.the vehicle has 92,000 miles on it and has been meticulously maintained.

Defective fuel pump started leaking as described in nhtsa action number pe09039.the consumer believed the leak was due to a defective fuel pump part, that developed cracks because the vehicle was in a location with extreme climates and temperature cycling as described in recall 09v483000. The mechanic found gas leaking from the top plastic portion of the fuel pump assembly flange.updated 12/15/11.

I had the very very strong gas smell with my 2001 s60 t5 a month ago both during driving and parking.turned out to be a leaking fuel on the top of tank which cause kind of wet at bottom of car around the tank. Floor dripping also can be seen after several hours parking. Recently, several cold engine stat became harder.volvo diagnosed as failure of fuel pump which needs to be replaced(poorly designed plastic pump housing). I scared to park my volvo in the garage because of potential fire. I heard this problem happened in hundreds volvos inarizona and nevada which caused safety recall. I'm wondering why the same safety problem can't result in recall in other states. Human life should be the same value as volvo builders. I hope volvo builder must respect customer life instead of just selling.

Car was surging while driving.electronic throttle module (etm) was cleaned at cost of $88.00.problem continued until car lost power at 65 mph on the freeway.i was unable to accelerate or decelerate.had to shift from drive to neutral in order to slow down until i was able to safely pull off the road.problem did not reoccur after restart of engine for about one week, when it happened repeatedly thereafter.finally replace etm at cost of $1,100.00.

Noticed a gas smell outside car, coming from rear of car. Car was under warranty, so we returned it to the dealer. The dealer took several attempts to remedy the problem. Finally, the dealer discovered and informed us that the gas tank had a crack and the gasoline was leaking from the crack. After part was replaced, the gas smell went away. Problem was fixed for a few months, and now gas smell has returned. Car is currently at dealer awaiting another repair.while there has been no fire associated with this problem, we are, of course, very afraid that there will be a fire. The gas tank is above the exhaust, so we are concerned that gas might drip or splash on hot components.dealer informed us that he has seen several other cars with this same problem. I do not have the information on those other cars. However, this appears to be a trend. (dealer in question is crown volvo of chapel hill, north carolina 919-929-0242).

The consumer stated that this is not the complaint she filed her complaint was about her gas tank door coming off.*tc *sc

2001 volvo s60 has intermittent surging at highway speeds.at idle, engine rpm drops below 500 and nearly dies.

My 2001 volvo s60, at 68k miles, had cracks in the fuel pump, causing a strong gas smell due to the leaks. This appears to be a widespread problem with the s60 in particular, since numerous postings have been seen regarding this same problem. When i called the volvo dealership, they knew immediately what the problem was. This is a $1000 repair that is nearly certain from what i have been able to tell. Apparently volvo has issued a recall on this problem, but only in arizona and nevada. The idea that the car develops this problem upon entering these states seems amusing. This appears to be an s60 issue, regardless of location. Perhaps the recall needs to be expanded to cover all affected models/cars? joel miller

On certain vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of arizona and nevada, due to the combination of fuel quality and climate conditions, the fuel pump may, in certain cases, experience a reduced functionality. The most common symptoms would be fuel odor.i live in tennessee and my car does the same thing.we have had over 3 weeks of 100 plus degree temps here. The consumer stated tried replacing the fuel filter, unfortunately that did not solve the problem. The consumer further stated there is evidence of a fuel leak in the gas tank and the vehicle is very hard to start.updated 09/26/07perm granted via email to release info to mfr on 09/28/2007.pco

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. The contact stated that fuel was seeping from the tank near the pump and onto the ground. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 180,000.

I have noticed a strong fuel odor inside and outside of car. It is also leaking fuel. The fuel leaking is underneath the car. I do not know exactly where fuel is leaking. It is not coming from fuel filter.

Terrible gas smell every time i drive it. I got someone to check it out, there is gas leaking from the fuel pump. This person put some putty over the leak which stopped the smell but this is not safe. I see a recall for the fuel pump but it says my car doesn't have a current recall.

The interior of my vehicle has a strong smell of gasoline.we are aware of the recall 220 in 2010.my vehicle was registered in the district of columbia in 2010 yet the manufacturer indicates that it is not eligible for the recall based on the fact that it was originally purchased in new york, a state not made part of this recall.{if the language in the recall bulletin states that the vehicle should have been sold or registered in these states, volvo should not interpret this to mean where the vehicle was originally purchase especially given the fact that the on the date of the recall the vehicle was registered in the district of columbia a state authorized by the recall to receive a mandatory replacement}should i await a fire to erupt before escalating this matter to get repairs under this recall?

I brought my car from someone in february, and it was running perfect. Now there is a gas smell, a smell that smells so bad i'm scared to drive because it might catch fire. I notice the smell before my birthday. My bday is 9/12, and now it jus had gotten worse. I don't thing i should be at fault for this problem. I don't have money to get it fixed. The dealer wants 1,095$ to fix it.

Extreme gas smell inside car. Noticed gas leaking from top of tank by the screws that hold it. Vehicle was parked in my drive way and as soon as my kids got in they noticed the strong smell. Not driving it defenetly can cause a fire.

Deadlocks on my vehicle will not allow the locks in my vehicle to lock during vehicle operation. This problem is very common, and many volvo owners experience this issue. It is a safety issue in keeping mine and other families safe from outside influences such as criminals and car jackings.

Volvo s60 of the first generation has had major transmission issues. Many have failed, slipped, and have destroyed the vehicle. According to other drivers it seems that the transmission has been fixed after 2005. It is not normal for transmissions to be going out before 100k miles. I'm sure many drivers have complained of this issue. Many times i have almost been in wrecks because it will not go into gear and will clunk into gear lurching me forward. The software when it first came out would put the car in neutral after you touched the brake to save gas millage. This software was removed for an unknown reason. Most likely being because it was damaging transmissions. Transmission do not shift instantly. So you would be in neutral then it would switch into gear. After many updates and small changes to the transmission reports of transmission failures have gone down majorly after 2005. It is not right that it took 4 years to fix this problem.

In 2008, at about 93k miles, the transmission on my 2001 volvo s60 failed while i was driving on a main thoroughfare. Fortunately, i was able to avoid being in an accident. I had a volvo dealer install a new volvo transmission. In 2014, at about 123k miles (or about 30k miles on the new transmission), the second transmission failed while i was driving on a local street. Again, i was able to avoid an accident. A search of the nhtsa database and other online sources showed that there have been numerous early transmission failures with volvos like mine. Volvo of north america refused to do anything to help fix the faulty transmission despite information that there is a problem with the transmission they have been using.

I noticedmy car jerking when it shifts, so i thought it wasthe transmission or something, so i brought it in a volvo dealership and they found out that it wasn't the transmission but " dsem needs etm and breather box engine light) or what the service advisor said the throttle module and i was surprised that they didn't tell me or asked me if i know about the recall. The costumer service is very poor at this place.

I had stopped at the traffic light.as i started again on green light, the car jerkily jumped forward.i had to push hard on the brakes.as the car stopped, the check engine light came on together with service transmission light.

Our volvo s60 has been experiencing a well known issue with what's commonly called transmission flare.when shifting into lower gears from a stop or at lower speeds and in slow traffic the automatic transmission jerks the car forward severely.there are hundreds of posts in online car forums with consumers complaining about this same problem.while it started out as a nuisance the problem has gotten progressively worse and is aggravated by hot weather, so much for taking the volvo on a drive for summer vacation.we trusted volvo's quality and integrity when purchasing our car and are very disappointed that there has been no recall issued to fix this problem.when we asked the dealership where we purchased the car what we could do to fix the problem they suggested we purchase a new car from them.shame on you volvo.before this problem we were proud volvo owners now we feel ripped off and abused.

Transmission failure at 94k miles.car lost power barely making it through an intersection.internet research indicates this is a common failure among volvo s60.

2001volvos60 turbo - transmission slipping; having problems changing gears; either it is straining to change gears or i hear and feel a loud (clunck).problem happens a lot in stop and go traffic.dealer says i need to replace the transmission at a cost of $4000.read other forums and other volvo owners are having the same problems.

I drive a 2001 volvo s60.i purchased it new in 2002.it has a total of 35,000 miles.i drive the car short distances and in town only.it started giving me problems a couple of weeks ago with jerking forward.the "transmission required" "check engine" messages came on today.i immediately brought it to a volvo dealer who could not explain to me what the problem is until after they perform a diagnostic test at a cost $122.00.i felt that i had no other recourse but to leave it with them.i don't feel that my car should experience transmission problems since the car is only 7 years old and is not driven for long distances.thank you for your consideration.

Transmission failed at 20 mph.consumer was almost ran over consumer felt this wasvery dangerous.there was no warning. Please provide any further information. Ts...

Stopped to drop off passenger, when attempted to pull away, transmission failed to engage.turned vehicle off to check it.on restart engaged fine.approx 1/2 mile down the road, transmission failed again while vehicle was in motion.coasted to the side of the road, turned vehicle off for a few minutes, on restart transmission once again engaged for me to go a few hundred feet to safety.vehicle was towed to dealership which diagnosed the transmission with 'internal faults' which would require a complete replacement of the transmission.the vehicle in question has never had any warnings that the transmission was failing, nor had it ever hesitated to engage prior to it's complete failure.the vehicle is 4 1/2 years old with only 32k miles.

2001 volvo s60 t5 after about 30 miles of highway driving, i came to a stop due to traffic.when traffic started moving, i noticed jerking and hard shifting.the transmission service light came on and the car went into limp mode.i eventually had to have the car towed to the dealership where i was told that it needed a new transmission for 4000.00.the 2001 s60 transmission issue is very common and should be replaced free of charge by volvo.

Transmission failure while driving 0 this has happened at both low and high speeds.this is the forth time in two years that my volvo s60 2.4 has had this type of failure.three times before it has supposedly been repaired - but yet again it the transmission has failed.three times in heavy traffic situations - three times putting myself in jeopardy.volvo seems incapable of fixing this very dangerous problem.ak

Transmission failure in 2001 volvo s-60 awd.

Faulty volvo s60 transmissionthe car has no gas/power then suddenly jerks into 1st and 2nd gear. There was trouble early on while it was under warranty but the dealership downplayed the problem and didn't tell me it had anything to do with the transmission.

In volvo 2001 s60 t5. The car sometimes stop accelerating for seconds, and then suddenly it clicks with a jolt after about a second and the car lurches forward. The problem seems to be happening with a lot of people due to a problem with the valve body as the dealer and another mechanic suggested (transmission part).this require replacement of trans. Valve body, sealing kit and tcm upgrade. Then trans oil flush. A total cost of $2488 quoted from galpin volvo van nuys california.below is a page showing different customers are having the same problem. Http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=20617.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. The contact stated that automatic transmission would not go in to gear, lock up and surge forward, andnot shift properly at any time.. She noticed the issue happened approx after driving 10 miles after the vehicle heated up. She had been having transmission failures since february 2008. She noticed the failure every time she drove the vehicle if she drove more than 10 miles. She took the vehicle to the dealership and a software upgrade was performed at her expense. However, the issue reoccurred shortly after. She called the manufacturer and was told that she did indeed have a faulty transmission but would not offer anything other than a 10% cost reduction on the software upgrade repair. There had been no further repairs made to the vehicle at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 137,000. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

I had slight jerking and slipping during recent two years. But since this month (aug. 2008), my 2001 s60 t5 becomes worse with frequent jerking and slipping during traffic and accelerating from a stop. Driving with those symptoms is very dangerous. Visited dealer shop for several times, the suggestions were always new transmission replacement which cost over $4,000. I was also told many s60 2001 and later have the similar problems. I think the volvo builder must be responsible forthis safety related bad part manufacturer issue.

For both our 2001 volvo s60 2.4t and our 2003 volvo xc90 2.5t awd, there have been unsuccessful attempts to repair a transmission defect (essentially same transmission in both vehicles per volvo tech support).between 2nd and 3rd there is. Intermittent/unpredictable failure to engage 3rd in timely fashion with resultant loss of acceleration as vehicle is functionally in neutral for 0.5 to 2.5 seconds.this is extremely dangerous, especially when pulling on to a highway.we have experienced 2 near collisions (almost being struck from behind).volvo tech support acknowledges a flaw in design causing servo fluid air lock in the 2001 model.a new transmission is scheduled to be replaced for our s60, but if the problem is still occuring in our 2003, will this correct the problem?the xc90 they say can be repaired with "upgraded software" installation (which is scheduled for that vehicle) but this remedy failed when performed on the 2001.we have let the dealer know we feel both vehicles are unsafe with this problem and we are now stuck with them trying to remedy both glaring safety defects.

2001 volvo s60 2.4t bought as volvo certified pre-owned from dealer with 47,000 miles.now has 69,170 and need new transmission, right axle, right cv joint, rear seal, motor mounts.had complained about poor acceleration, rough shifting, rolling in park before extended warranty ran out and dealer did not fix, now out of warranty, they acknowledge the problems exists and i will have to pay to fix.

2001 volvo s60 passenger side seat belt retractor failed and allowed for the belt to fully release without any tension.volvo dealership informed seat belt mechanism must be replaced.

I activated the driver seat heater component on my 2001 volvo s60 during a cold morning. Approximately 15 to 20 minutes later, i smelled something burning and felt a burning sensation to my left outer thigh area. I turned the driver seat heater off and the burning stopped. On stopping my vehicle, i examined the seat and found a small hole burned in the seat where i felt the burning sensation. I photographed the burned hole in the leather seat. I researched the internet and found this to have occurred in other volvo vehicles. I have not used the seat heater for fear that it may cause a fire.

Drivers power seat mechanism randomly and frequently moves forward pinning the driver against the steering wheel.pushing the control button to the rear will stop forward movement. Pushing it to the rear again will begin seat movement to the rear.but rearward movement often is stopped and interrupted by forward movement again.this is a safety issue.a partial search on the internet indicates that the volvo seat mechanism is failure prone.

Headrest on backseats is too high, causing impairment of driver's vision when looking out of rear window.please add vin.

Rear seat headrest cannot be repositioned, causing poor visibility to driver. Dealer has yet to be contacted.

When i apply pressure to the brake pedal i get an error message sometimes, not always, that says "check brake lights". When the message is up, the left and right brakes in the back of the vehicle do not illuminate, but the middle one in the back of my rear window still does. When the message goes away, all lights illuminate.

The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 173,000.

Driving 2001 volvo s60 2.4t at 30 mph, stepped brakes and they locked up (car has abs) causing complete loss of control.went into spin and crashed over curb, breaking both passenger side rims and gauging rear tire.had to be towed; one week later, car still in shop.mechanic can find no reason for this...no fault codes on computer, fluids, wires, etc all fine.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle accelerated on its own after reaching 30 mph and caused an accident.the contact tried braking, but the brakes failed, due to the throttle issue.the vehicle was not taken to a service dealer to address the issue.a police report was taken.

Dealer is now handling the case. Issue is not with the dealer, but with the design of the front suspension. See www.vvspy.com s60 thread, photo album.

Dt*:the contact stated while traveling 10 mph, the front driver side wheel detached from the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop.the repair shop determined the bolt for the lower ball joint sheared off causing the separation.the bolt, fender, tire, and rim needs to be replaced.

Front wheel bearings have been replaced 4 times now with only 17,000 miles on vehicle (2 left & 2 right).

I have replaced 3 pirelli p6 235/45 r17 tires due to bubbling of the sidewall.i complained to the dealer about this and they stated that they knew of no particular problem with this tire or car model. I then found on the web that someone had already complained to the nhtsa about this very same problem. I have e-mailed volvo and pirelli and i am awaiting reply.however, the safety issue appears serious enough to warrant my contacting the nhtsa.

Under normal driving conditions, the tire shreadded in the center, causing the car to go out of control and injuring my wife and myself.i called michelin and was told that this is the normal manner in which the tire would function.

Tube separated from tire causing 3" bubble on sidewall.pirelli was contacted and denied tire warranty as "road hazard"; new tire was purchased and identical problem reocurred with new tire in identical spot.pirelli contacted once again and tire warranty denied as "road hazard".this new tire has less than 2,000 miles and bubble on sidewall is in identical place (adjacent to wheel clamp).

2001 volvo s60. No description given.

This is the second serious incident record.please reference odi number 10134007; that documented the first incident.

My 2001 s60 2.4t volvo sedan has had numerous error messages displayed over the 4 years i have owned it.most times there was no problem in driving the vehicle until i could safely pull over.the "fix" for the error message was to shut off the engine, sit for a moment and restart.on two other frightful occasions, however, i lost steering assist and acceleration.both times i was on busy interstate highways and feared for my life as my car limped toward the breakdown lane.it appears that i have been extremely fortunate in that both times the car lost power and control that it started up again.i will be submitting 2 accounts online.my repair garage confirmed yesterday that there are a significant number of error messages caused by the "throttle control" and that i have to take the car back to the original dealer.i have my appointment for september 6 and was given an estimate of $900 to replace the electronic throttle control.it is not under warranty.

(1) at around 6:30am, saturday, january 7, 2006, i was driving in san francisco going downhill.once i hit the bottom of the hill, i began taking a left turn.(2) in the process of conducting my left turn, my car completely stalled and all power steering was lost.had there been parked cars on the road that morning, i would have directly hit them due to the lack of power steering as i slammed on my brakes to stop from hitting the sidewalk. Immediately, the "reduced performance" light came on and fortunately, after 10 minutes of leaving my car in the middle of the road because it would not start, i was able to start it again and drive it back to my home.(3) i took the car to royal motors, 1525 howard street, san francisco, ca and they informed me that there had been an extended warranty associated with the etm failure.however, volvo had instructed them to first attempt to clean the etm and see if there are any failures after cleaning.i told the representative that if this happens again, i may not be in san francisco as i commute on the freeway to work in palo alto each day.they said this is the only way to have volvo pay for the etm failure.so, i simply said okay and received my car back the next day.

On jan. 26, 2005, my car came to a complete stop.i restarted the car and couldn't get it to drive over 10 mph.i had it towed to the dealer at their insistence.$790.43 later, i had my throttle body replaced on my 2001 volvo s60 at my expense because it was beyond warranty.the dealer would do nothing for me since it was out of warranty.i feel that a 3 1/2 year old car should not have had this great a repair or expense.i think this is a recall item and would like to be part of your study that is now opened as of july 26th.please contact me for further information.

Dt: while driving on highway the owner noticed a message came up which read performance reduced. The owner was traveling about 55-60mph when thecar lost power and wouldn't go over30 mph . He then exit off the and the vehicle experienced a significant loss of power at a stop light. The idle was rough, and as the owner attempted to go through the light, the car wouldn't go over 10 mph. Then the owner put the flashers on and exited onto to the shoulder. The owner shut the car off because he couldn't continue on the road at that low speed. The owner sat there for about a minute, and was able to make it towork only about 1/2 mile away the message was still showing. Then as owner was drivingthe message changed to engine failure. The ownerread the article about nhtsa investigation pe05041. The owner called the dealership and reported the loss of power. The owner has not had it repaired because the dealership was not aware of what could be causing the problem. An employee of a local dealership advisedowner of the electronic throttle body problem. The owner has not contacted the manufacturer yet.

2001 volvo s60. Attorney writes on behalf of consumer in regards to problems with vehicle as described in nhtsa action number pe05-041*tgw the vehicle was taken to the dealer regarding the recall. However, the vehicle was not exhibiting the characteristics at the time. The dealer claimed their diagnostic test did not indicate anything wrong with the etm, but there could have been something wrong with an outside temperature sensor, which they suggested might be a part of the problem. The consumer was charged $103 for the diagnostic test, and they indicated it would cost $270 to replace the sensor. The consumer declined the repairs. The consumer took the vehicle to a repair facility and they replaced both temperature sensors. Following the replacement of the sensors, the technician reported the vehicle exhibited symptoms of surging, idle fluctuating and loss of power. Clearly, the sensors were not the problem. The consumer is seeking reimbursement for the diagnostic test.

Dt: 2001 volvo s60 . Vehicle stalled/lost power, and operated at reduced speeds due to throttle body failure..

I was driving on a busy highway, and making a left turn across traffic. When i depressed the gas pedal, the car could not accelerate above about five miles per hour. The computer on the car read" reduced performance" and i narrowly missed being in an accident as limped across the highway. The car required a new throttle, and the download of activation software. The cost for this repair was $736.56. When i had this problem, the mechanic told me of numerous past problems with the throttle on this model and a pending class action law suit against volvo. I wrote to the volvo corporation to tell them of this problem, and then learned that nhtsa was investigating this very problem. They apparently won't do anything to remedy this unless forced to. I thought it important to go on record with numerous other owners that have experienced this same defect. It sounds like a number of other people have narrowly avoidedserious accidents.please take care of this so someone is not injured or killed. This problem came out of nowhere, and certainly put me in a dangerous situation.

Electronic throttle module failure, lost steering and power on interstate at 80 miles per hour. Replaced control, replaced alternator, finally replaced emt. Part out of warranty i put myself at risk of death because of this part failure. Part not covered by warranty 80,000 miles on car.

Throttle control module of my 2001 volvo s60 failed.the vehicle would go from a normal driving condition (road load, approx. 45 mph) to a reduced speed of a max. 20 - 25 mph.after trail and error, i learned that after 5 to 6 engine restarts, i could get the vehicle to drive normal, without the reduced power.but over time the vehicle would go back into the same reduced power mode.

Speed control problem.my 2001 volvo s60 lost power last night, while i was in the fast lane driving 70 mph on interstate 5!i rapidly lost speed and by some miracle was able to weave through traffic to the roadside.the engine continued to run but it was as if the gas pedal was not connected to the engine.i managed to proceed at fast idle speed to an off ramp and found a parking lot, where i shut off the engine.i contacted the company i bought the car from and they suggested that i try to re-start the engine, which i did and the problem had corrected itself. I have scheduled my volvo for service.the irony is that my wife has a 2001 volvo xc station wagon and the same problem occurred with her vehicle last september.the volvo dealer corrected the problem by replacing an ecm and re-programming it.the problem with her volvo xc hasn't re-occurred.the real concern is that in both instances, we were traveling on an interstate freeway at high speed when the problem occurred and only by pure luck didn't cause an accident!!

Car would suddenly lose power, causing unsafe situations in traffic.warning light would come on along with check engine light and message saying "reduced performance".failure was intermittent at first and instrument lights would go back to normal.

Dt: 2001 volvo s60 2.4t. Vehicle stalled/dies/ost power while driving at 40 mph due to throttle body failure.

(1) car ran rough in any gear when trying to maintain speed(2) i took it to the dealer immediately because i could not stand it(3) $1409 repair to replace the electronic throttle module.i was told if i did not replace it the car would stall and be undriveable.

2001 volvo s60 2.4t with 88,000 miles and record of regular maintenance began sputter and show a performance reduced message, causing the engine to stop accelerating and slow down to a crawl.this happened once on a major street, and then again on the interstate.both times i was able to get out of traffic quickly, thankfully preventing any potential incidents.the mechanic, who has it now, indicated the computer recognized a throttle problem, but nothing from there.various outlets mentioned a problem with the electronic throttle mechanism, that was not being publicly reported by volvo.

Despite several service bulletins and recall, the volvo dealership refused to honor the recall #155 campaign charging me $1,120.92 for a new electronic throttle.we would like to know where we can send this invoice for reimbursement.we also would like the administration to triple fine volvo cars for its blatant disregard of the laws governing recalls.

I have approximately 80,000 miles on my vehicle and on intermittent occasions i had experienced problems with idle fluctuation and slight erratic acceleration and power behavior.on another occasion i was entering the freeway and as i accelerated into position on the freeway the car felt slow to respond and sluggish, then i received an urgent engine service required message on my dash display.as soon i had the chance i pulled over to check engine vitals, oil, coolant etc, everything was good and i hadn't noticed any serious drivability issues but reluctant to travel at highway speeds on the freeway. I inquired with the volvo dealer at my next service which coincided with this most recent issue.it was explained to me that the fault code indicated problems with the electronic throttle module/system (etm/ets), and that i could either have it cleaned which would be a temporary fix, or replaced which would cost over $1000.00. The service rep checked to see if there were any recalls for my vehicle and there were none that applied to my vehicle and as far as technical service bulletins were concerned there were two that applied but even though, my vehicle still would not qualify under any extended warranty because my vehicle was purchased in europe and shipped it back to the u.s.what is that?i thought all volvo's inevitably come from the same place.what sets my vehicle apart from any other, its still u.s. Spec and its still a volvo and we are all experiencing the same problems it appears.after doing some research on the internet, i have learned that this is a common problem effecting several model vehicles ranging from years 1999-2002 and is a potentially life-threatening problem under certain circumstances and which volvo has refused to recognize and refuses to issue a recall on the problem part that is not mechanical and in my opinion does not qualify as normal wear and tear.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving, the vehicle intermittently lost power and lurched forward. This happened when the gas pedal wasdepressed after depressing the brake pedal. Then, the vehiclelurched forward with force. The problembecame current and happened several times a day.

Throttle module failed, leaving me pulling onto interstate, but unable to go more than 20 mph before car died.dealer said that they had seen 3 of these failures this week and was a common occurrence on the s60. *nlm

I own a 2001 volvo s60 with a little over 18,000 miles on the vehicle.on 10-19-2005, i was stopped at an intersection waiting for the left lane turn signal.when the signal turned green, i proceeded into the intersection and noticed that my car started to lose power even though my foot was on the accelerator throttle.i applied more pressure to the accelerator throttle, but the vehicle continued to lose speed, then all of a sudden the vehicle lurched forward as if to kick in and the acceleration resumed.it was alarming, because if i had been on a freeway or had been in a situation whereby i had to pass a slow driver on a two lane highway, i could have been in some serious trouble.again, my car has very low mileage for a 2001 vehicle.i would appreciate being included in any investigation that may uncover a possible defect in the vehicle regarding this matter.thank you for your time and consideration.sincerely, terry w. Morris.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60.the contact stated that the electronic throttle module was defective, causing the vehicle to surge abnormally. The vehicle would also stall intermittently and exhibit an abnormal increase in engine rpms.the dealer and manufacturer were both notified of the failure, but denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle.the vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 105,000.

I got the etm vehicle speed control recall fixed but my car is doing it again. Is it normal for this to happen again and can i get it fixed for free again? please let me know because my car is starting to stall out on me and i'm afraid of getting into an accident. Thank you

Dt: the contact stated while driving vehicle stalled intermittently.the vehicle has been to a dealership with the same problems four different times. The throttle body was replaced. The vehicle was experiencing the same problems again. The repairs were being done atcontact'sexpense.

I own a volvo s60 and have experienced an electronic throttle module failure.as the volvo dealer has told me."oh yeah, we keep those in stock.manufacturing flaw.they are burning out like crazy."the repair is going to cost me $900 usd and i am absolutely livid.some research has yielded that an excess of 200,000 vehicles could be affected and so far tens of thousands have been diagnosed and cleaned, or replaced.my vehicle has received the "software upgrade 'recall'", but clearly to no avail.my car has only 60,000 miles on it and has to have a faulty manufactured part replaced.i bought volvo for the reliability and service and thus far, have received neither.this is a serious problem that results in excessive and sudden stalling in traffic, open road, and parked conditions.as a direct result of this defect, i was almost sandwiched and no doubt would have been seriously injured, if not killed, by two tractor trailers on a merge on route 295.i'm afraid that volvo and the us government is awaiting fatalities or ford's sale to a foreign competitor (bmw) before issuing the recall. This is dirty pool and i am requesting this association to make a once good company remember their roots in safety and responsibility. Thank you for your time.

I was on a long trip back home on 11/29/05 when i noticed my 2001 volvo started surging after about 20 minutes of this it showed me a check engine light and a message appeared saying " performance reduced ". The car was basically shutting down. I was doing 75 mph at the time and had to pull over to the shoulder from the left lane 4 lanes over to the right. This was a little scary doing 75 mph. I sat on the shoulder for about 2 minutes and tried restarting the car. I seemed fine so i continued on. The same thing happened 2 more times on the trip home. The following monday 11/1/05 i brought the car to a ramsey volvo to have it looked at. They told me the etm needed to be replaced. I had them replace it. The problem i have is that it seems as if this is very common among volvo's with the etm and it is quite dangerous when they fail. If as many fail as i see on the internet i feel volvo should recall the etm and fix it.

Dt*:the contact stated while trying to accelerate to highway speeds, the vehicle stalled three times.the vehicle was traveling 30-40 mph each time.the vehicle was pulled over; the battery was disconnected, and then reconnected.the vehicle restarted after the computer reset.also, the vehicle would accelerate when the accelerator pedal had been released.the vehicle was taken to the dealership and the ecm module was replaced.there have been no further problems.

Car jerks and clunks when switching gears. Its starting to grind and clack in 1-2 gear and i hops around the rpms line crazy.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle accelerated on its own after reaching 30 mph and caused an accident.the contact tried braking, but the brakes failed, due to the throttle issue.the vehicle was not taken to a service dealer to address the issue.a police report was taken.

Severalepisodes of sudden loss of power while driving.episode 1/28/06 nearly resulted in collision at intersection when attempting to accelerate through turn.engine warning light came on, indicating: "reduced power"max speed 18 mph, uphill 5 mph.engine rough, etm failure.

Car stalled while driving then would not go any faster than 15mph.

Dt*: the contact stated after nhtsa recall #06v441000 concerning the vehicle speed control was performed on the vehicle, it stalled while driving 60 mph without prior warning.it was maneuvered off the road and restarted.however, it was towed to an independent repair shop who suggested the vehicle be taken to the dealer for inspection.the dealer was not contacted.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. The contact statedwhile driving approximately 65 mph on cruise control, there was a sudden loss of engine power as the service engine urgent warning light illuminated. The service engine urgent warning illuminated intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 06v441000 (vehicle speed control) in 2011. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 205,000.

Dt: 2001 volvo s60.the caller stated the air flow meterwas replaced at the cost $290.00.this started about a year ago, ands happened 5-6 times . The car will lose power and stall.the check engine light came on. Tookvehicle to the dealer, and they ran a diagnostic test, replaced air mass meter. The work was performed on april 5 2005, by wc motor comp inc. The caller heard about the investigation, and i knew that thiswas what was wrong withvehicle.did notcontact the manufacturer, but just called nhtsa.

2001 volvo s60 stalled at highway speeds.*mrafter the vehicle stall the consumer was able to restart it immediately.the vehicle was taken tot he dealer but they were unable o determine the cause of the problem.

Dt: the contact stated his vehicle hesitated and surged. Right before the vehicle hesitated or surged it lost power. It started as an intermittent problem but is now occurring daily. The rate of speed does not seem to be a factor.however,it does often occur between 40 and 50 mph. But, it has occurred at lower speeds. The vehicle stalled twice. The first time the vehicle would not restart and was towed into the dealership. The dealer cleaned the electric control (etm),and this solved the problem for one week. The second time the vehicle stalled the contact turned the ignition off and waited twenty minutes. The vehicle immediately restarted, and he was able to drive the vehicle home. The vehicle is currently in the dealership awaiting diagnostic testing and repairs. The dealer has been in contact with the manufacturer. They are discussing replacing the etm and other procedures to fixthe problem.

Volvo s60 2001the vehicle exhibits a sudden loss of speed and engine power.this happens while driving in highway traffic without warning. I have had the vehicle to the volvo dealer twice an they can't find anything wrong. I suspect that the electronic throttle control is the problem.

The contact owns a 2001 volvo s60. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to accelerate from a complete stop. The contact continued to apply pressure to the accelerator pedal and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the throttle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic where the electronic control module was replaced but the failure continued. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 131,000.

Intermittent failure of electronic throttle in 2001 volvo s60.fortunately occurred in parking lot with vehicle at rest.vehicle suddenly stopped responding to throttle.turned off vehicle and did visual and tactile survey of throttle pedal area.restarted vehicle and problem disappeared.could have been very serious situation had vehicle been at speed.

Right front power window inoperable from either side switch control.power door locks do not respond to remote.ambient temprarture readout inoperable.dealer claimed to have upgrade component software.position bulb outage error text:replaced right rear position bulb.

Right front power window and lock in operable.left (driver's side) door look switch inoperable.ambient temperature readout inoperable.

The windshield cracked when water was applied to it while washing the car.

In october 2003 and july 2004, while driving my car to work each time what appeared to be small rocks/pebbles/stones have struck the windshield of my 2001 volvo s60 2.4t in the same general area around the rearview mirror.both times, the windshield shattered in that region and cracks propagated from the point of impact.this appears to be a stress region in the windshield that cannot withstand impacts by relatively small objects.these two incidents have resulted in the replacement of the windshield each time.

Optional wheels (17") corrode so tire breaks seal causing air lose and destruction of tire. Our car has about 30,000 miles on it and has had 6 tires replaced because of this problem.

On two family-owned volvo s60 t5's, all the wheel bolts have rusted (20 per car, 40 total) to the point where on one car the wheel bolts could not be removed to change the tire in an emergency situation. All 2001 s60/v70/v70xc models seem to have this problem with wheel bolts rusting.
