On november 14, 2007, my daughter, had a accident with my car, a 2005 volvo s.40, 24.1. She hit a medium size tree head on. The airbags did not deployed.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated that the passenger air bag off warning light illuminated with the passenger seat occupied. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who inspected the failure and advised that the air bag weight sensor needed to be replaced. The dealer was notified and advised that they would contact him with an estimate for repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated that while driving at 55 mph, the steering wheel and entire vehicle began to shake as there was an abnormal noise. In addition, the air conditioner, radio, horn and sun roof failed to function when activated. The srs warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the ecm, front axles and struts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 194,000.
[this is a preventative complaint.no injury sustained.]this car has a failed passenger seat sensor that when depressed activates the passenger side air bag.this vehicle also has a driver side seat belt that clicks and then can be pulled out of the locking harness.these items are not recalled by the manufacture but, in my opinion, should be for customer safety.
One day out of the blue, the warning light saying the airbags were not operating appeared.found out that a sensor located within another part, located safely under the passenger seat, had become defective.all on its own.i had a choice. Roll the dice and maybe in a bad crash the airbags would not deploy...or spend $1,400 to get it replaced. Also even though it said only passenger airbag was affected, dealership said they would not confirm or deny whether the driver airbag was operable.so i shelled out the cash only to find that two parts needed to be replaced - one part had to be broken to get to the sensor. So i had to purchase both parts. And they said this is one of the safest vehicles on the road? i later found out this is common, filed a complaint with volvo, and they sent me a "courtesy" check for $200 to help defray the cost.i think they should recall this part and pay the entire price.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated that the key was unable to turn and prevented the vehicle from starting. The battery was tested by an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was to be taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was unable to be driven. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin and failure mileage were not available.
I was in the intersection ready to make a turn when the car suddenly stalled all the dash display lights went out all gauges stopped working and the windshield wipers would not go off when i tried to restart the car the dash suddenly displayed brake failure pull over safely, and immobilizer check manual and the car would not start it had to be pushed across the intersection and it has been sitting in a parking lot since then waiting to be towed this has happened on 3 different occasions since i bought the vehicle this problem needs to be fixed at company expense each time i have been fortunate enough to be in a parking lot or a public street but on the last incident i would've been on the freeway. I hope some one will call or contact me to rectify this issue i love the volvo brand but going through this make not want to continue on with any other model.
I have been waiting for over 1 month for a new alternator for my 2005 s40 volvo.i cannot get an answer from anyone in volvo why it is taking so long.of course, i can not drive the cari have been told by volvo that 139 other volvo owners are in the same condition.please help.
I have a volvo s40 2005 and the radio/cd player just blanks out.when i start the car the radio/cd won't play.it will power up and the display will show, but no sound comes on.it has done this three times.i have to totally turn the car off and let it sit for a while before it will work again.
Often, the headlamps bulbs fail, after a few years changing bulbs, i found out that due to contact between detachment of the wiring harness cover is the cause of the failure bulbs in right and left headlamps. The wiring harness installed by the manufacturer do not resist voltage and heat.
The starter control unit (scu) on my 2005 volvo s40 has ceased to function twice in the 5 years that i've had it (50,000 miles).essentially, this means that the scu does not read the key (the car tells me i have a "key error"), and therefore the car shuts down completely and does not turn on (the steering locks, the car does not start, it is unusable).the first time it happened, it was under warranty, therefore it was fixed free of charge.it happened again last month, was diagnosed by the bill pearce (reno, nv) dealership as the same issue, and i was given a 50% discount on the repair.it is an issue that apparently many other 2005 volvo s40 owners have had (learned this through a simple internet search), but it is not recognized as an issue with volvo and is not a recall item.it is a software problem, not a wear and tear item or something that i can maintain and keep from happening.it should not be something that i have to pay several hundred dollars to fix.there is no warning when this is about to happen.the car works on minute and then doesn't the next.i have no way of knowing when it is going to happen, and was stuck 200 miles from a dealership the last time it happened.it can supposedly be fixed only by the dealership because it's needs the proper software download.please look into this issue.i have a car that i can no longer trust and the dealerships don't recognize it as a legitimate issue.i have all the documentation to provide if necessary.
Inserted key in ignition and nothing happened. Computer reads key error try again. Kept trying and finally started. Next day same thing happened.
Fuel pump control module (pem) fails during wet conditions.car will crank like normal but will not start.let car dry out for a few days and then the car will run normal again.
While driving on the highway my car began to show signs of an electrical problem.different warnings were coming up on the control panel, alerting me to brake fluid low, as well as my current mileage disappearing.when i pulled off the highway, shut the car off, and removed the key the windshield wipers continued to run.the display messages including "brake failure, stop car safely" and "immobilizer see manual." the brakes are fine, because they worked when stopping the car and work while this message is displayed. I believe this was an electrical problem, as i was driving the car earlier in the day and no issues were arising. When i tried to restart the car it would be start saying to see the "immobilizer see manual" and would not recognize the problem.the car is now stuck in a parking lot until it can be towed to a dealer. I would appreciate this matter being investigated and recalled if possible, as this is not the first time the car has not recognized the key.
The s-40 was on the highway and the message came on stating engine failure.i pulled over in the breakdown lane and shut the car off.i restarted the car and was able to drive home.i made an appointment with the dealer to look into the problem which occurred at that time, today i experienced the same and now the cd does not work properly.i made an appointment to bring the s 40 t5 in for service to check the problem again.
The vehicle exhibited stalling and misfires the first time at 65 mph.the check engine light (cel) came on and the diagnostic indication was that fuel pressure sensor needed replaced.it continued with stall and misfire at intermittent times with the cel staying on and off intermittently.i bought a fuel pressure sensor and replaced the original, which has remedied the problem.when i replaced the fuel pressure sensor, i examined the original part and noted that it had a part number of 8699448 instead of 31272733 like the replacement part.putting in fuel pressure sensor 8699448 on the internet, i quickly found volvo recall 181 which covers this part for volvo 2003 - 2004 s60/v70 cars (48,000 plus).my motor is a slight variant of the motors used and not included.it is obvious that the major part of consideration is the fuel pressure sensor 8699448 but volvo did not see their way to include all motors using this part and the danger is no different for the s40 than the s60/v70. The internet shows many other examples of this failure within 2005 s40s.this is probably the tip of the iceberg with many more to follow and possible potential dangerous accidents impending.all information i relayed in this complaint has been told to my local volvo dealer and volvo customer service (national).

I own a 2005 volvo s40 t5 which i have enjoyed thus far. However every once in a while when you insert the key, which is an electronic key the message display will display "key error try again." when this happens the car will not start at all, nothing inside the car including the radio will work either. After 20 to 30 times trying to start the car the key will eventually start the car. There are 2 keys to my car and this happens with both keys, so i know it isn't the key. I have researched this online and found it to be a common problem. This happens sporadically for example it will happen several times over a week or so and then not happen for several months. It recently started about a week ago and has happened everyday since. It is embarrassing to be in such a nice car and it not start. Sometimes when this happens, in addition to the "key error try again" message the message display will also display messages including "brake failure, stop car safely" and "immobilizer see manual." the brakes are fine, because they work on the way home and work while this message is displayed. The computer in the car was reset and that seemed to help temporarily, but i believe it is an electrical problem since the car does not recognize the key. I would appreciate this matter being investigated and recalled if possible.
(s40 2.4i) initial car message: "brake failure, pull over safely."i continued to drive home since i was a few blocks away.message changed to "anti skid service required" then back to brake failure again.difficulty accelerating after stopping, felt like the parking brake was on but drove ok once accelerated.attempted to turn off car but message changed to "immobilizer, check manual" and could not turn key to off position.from what i read in the manual, it appeared that the card didn't recognize it was in park.turned parking brake on and off a few times and was able to turn off car.brought to local mechanic who replaced brake pad sensor and anti-stop switch.--in and out of auto repair shop 4x over the past month w/the same issues and new symptoms:wipers turned on automatically and don't shut off and new message:engine system service urgent.--mechanic replaced some rusted wires, brought to a volvo dealer who reset computer and did not find any problems.--still having same issues.cannot put car into drive or turn off car when brake failure or anti-skid message appear but if i wait a few minutes, i can turn the car off and on a couple of times to get to the engine system service urgent message and i can then put it into drive.sometimes all messages go away and it is fine for a few days but then the car jerks forward as if someone bumped the car and all messages appear again.new message: power steering message flashed briefly .. Although there was no problem w/the steering.bringing to another volvo dealer.. The saga continues.--i read prior consumer complaints on this site and i also had the sunroof leakage problem in 2013.entire floor of car was soaked, especially passenger side.took 3 visits, weeks and $900 to get it fixed. Volvo first cleaned out the clogged line but carpets were wet again so they then replaced the entire line.
This car has developed an electrical problem where the dash lights start flickering on and off displaying various failures on the dashboard display, like immobilizer failure and crash mode and various other warnings. At the same time, the radio cuts out and an audible "clicking" is heard underneath the dash board. On several occasions the vehicle has stalled out completely while driving causing a dangerous driving condition and i have had to coast to the side of the road without power steering or power brakes. Sometimes the vehicle will start back up, other times it simply won't click or turn over at all. I fear an incident where the steering column will lock automatically when the vehicle dies, as the steering column is unlocked by the immobilizer key fob to initially start the car. If this were to occur i fear this could create an unsafe condition for the occupants of the vehicle and others motorists or pedestrians. I have just had two new remotes programmed to the vehicle and this procedure was performed at weiss brentwood volvo in st. Louis missouri. I have owned this vehicle for one week prior to taking this car to weiss volvo without issue and this problem only arose since this service was performed at weiss volvo. The previous owner told me this problem did not exist prior to the sale of the vehicle. .... Updated 08/05/14
Ignition switch malfunctioning. When you insert the key, which is an electronic key the message display will display "key error try again." when this happens the car will not start at all. Thus far repeatedly jiggling the key fob while in the switch, and/or turning on/off multiple times gets the system to eventually recognize the key. There are 2 keys to my car and this happens with both keys, so i know it isn't the key. I have researched this online and found it to be a common problem. This problem will let me remove the key, but the radio and interior lights stay on, and i can't lock the car. This happens sporadically, but on average once a week.
3 of the 4 door lock actuators on my car have stopped working. This happened right after the warranty expired. The locks will not longer lock or unlock. This is a safety issue. Please look at requiring volvo to fix this issue. It is a know issue due to faulty parts.
Car stalls with out warning when travel at speeds of 0-65 mph very dangerous!! there are recalls re: fuel pressure sensors for nearly all volvo makes except the s40 2005 this part is truly a defective item and needs to be recalled before a death occurs on the highway!! i thought volvo was a safe reliable car but i can honestly say this car is the biggest piece of junk i have ever spent a lot of money on. The tires blew out on the sides which also put me in danger the interior headliner fell off as well as all other material on the doors all leather is loose gear shifter cover fell apart. Gas cap broke gas builds too much pressure loosening the gas cap frequently these are just some of the issues i have. Very disappointed in this vehicle i keep my car in the garage. Only drive to and from grocery shopping and dr appts please consider recalls on the important parts of the vehicle that can save lives!
Car loosing power and engine missing at highway speeds.engine light went on.failure of fuel pressure monitor.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. When the vehicle was started, there was an abnormal vibration coming from the vehicle. Upon opening the hood and checking the engine, the contact noticed that the passenger side of the engine was fractured. The contact stated that the fracture was along the top side of the engine. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 43,000.
Car is all of a sudden accelerating on its own. It has happened a handful of times within the last month. I will make a turn, let off the gas peddle and then the car will just jerk forward revving up the rpms and accelerating on its own.
2005 volvo s40 engine air conditioning malfunctioned. When the problem first begun the car would be cool at start then get warm until one day the air conditioning just quit working.i read on this forum authorized volvo dealership admits this is a common problem in this year/make/model. The compressor clutch or compressor or both required replacing.in a class action lawsuit [filed 2018] http://www.autopartsclass.com/index.phpincludes the 2005 volvo s40 air conditioning unit: [see below]congratulations! your 2005 volvo s40 is included in the following auto parts cases:in re: instrument panel clustersin re: air conditioning systemsin re: alternatorsin re: windshield wiper systems
2005 volvo s40 t5 : multiple failures of oil trap housing at 22,500 and 68,330 miles. First failure occurred 10 months after purchase. Volvo checked valve (30677524), and replaced oil housing (30684381), hose clamp (976561) upgraded ecm petrol (30668282)...all under warranty. Second failure occurred at 68,330 miles, volvo again upgraded ecm (30668282), replaced hose clamp (976561), hose (8670008), and again replaced oil trap housing (30684381) due to clogged lines releasing air pressure. Cost of repair: $505 labor + $242 parts= $747.17, no longer under warranty.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated that the engine trap flame box was leaking oil and exhibited a whistling noise when the engine was started. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that the engine flame trap box was previously replaced under the warranty and would not be replaced again. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 121,000.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph when the vehicle completely stalled. There were no warning lights prior to the failure. The contact was able to coast to the side of the road. She restarted the vehicle and was able to drive to her destination where the vehicle stalled again. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the battery cables were replaced for a second time in fourteen months. The contact was driving when the failure occurred. The vehicle was at the dealer at the time of the complaint; the dealer could not diagnose the problem. The contact called the manufacturer who advised her to take the vehicle to the dealer. The vin was unavailable. The current mileage was approximately 40,000. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.
I have a 2005 volvo s40 2.4i with about 47k miles and i am having problems with the a/c.i live in houston (tx) where it gets very hot so i have to have the a/c on constantly. When i first turn the car on and drive off, the a/c starts cooling and working just fine. However, when it is 90f or above, the a/c begins to blow warm air after a few minutes. When that happens i have to turn it off and back on a few times to get it working again but it only works for a few minutes before i have to repeat "on/off" ritual. Usually, if i leave it off for a few minutes it works for a bit longer time before it stops again.this problem 1st appeared when it was about a year old @ about 9-10k miles but it only happened once and was fine after i turned off and back on.2nd time happened about 1-1/2 yrs ago when it was around 35k miles but was the same as the first time and was ok after turning off and back on. Now for the past year it is constant!!this happens daily!! the car is only now 47k.i took it to the car dealership yesterday and i barely began explaining the problem and before i even finished describing it, the service advisor finished by telling me the rest. He told me he knew the story b/c he heard it many times before. He said it was most likely the compressor clutch, compressor, or both. He said that it is a constant problem with that vehicle and that they do the same repairs repeatedly and that it seemed like a specific problem on those vehicles.today, i began doing some research and found several sites where people are asking online advisors what this problem could be. Per my online research and the dealership's service advisor this is a very common problem with this car.since this is such a common problem with the car can you please look into doing a product recall for these faulty parts so that we're not stuck paying the estimated $1500 at the dealership! thank you ([xxx])information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
My car was making a pumping noise from the rear of the car and the check engine light would come on.i took it to a local mechanic and they informed me of the pem recall/extended warranty.i took the car to the volvo dealership to have repaired and they said the pem was not the problem and that it was a fuel pressure sensor and possibly the fuel pump itself.i declined the repair and exactly 2 weeks later the car failed to start.i had it towed to my local mechanic since i live 70 miles from the volvo dealership.my mechanic replaced and moved the pem to a new location, which was exactly what the recall/extended warranty was for!the dealership gave me a form for reimbursement from volvo, but volvo refused to pay the $634 that i paid for the repair.they first tried to say it was not a "genuine volvo part" but i verified it was.then they said since i declined the repair for the fuel pressure sensor, they could not pay!the reimbursement form is for the pem and has nothing to do with the fuel pressure sensor. So this pem became faulty in a 2 week period?i think not!obviously volvo does not stand behind their cars and i feel like they lied to me.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40.while accelerating from a stop, the vehicle stalls and hesitates.the failure also occurs at highway speeds and has occurred for approximately 8 months to a year.the failure gradually worsens whenever the vehicle is driven.the dealer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 08v033000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:fuel pump).the failure mileage was 75,000.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated that the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle stalled while she was driving. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was repaired according to recall 08v033000 (fuel system, gasoline: delivery:fuel pump) but the contact still experienced the same failure after the repair. The dealer also informed her that she needed to have a fuel pump sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired again. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 69,000. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000. Updated 03/15/11*ljalso, there was an internal fault with the ignition which caused the vehicle to shut down.updated 04/28/11
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40.while driving low speeds, the engine makes a howling noise.the noise stops while driving higher speeds.the dealer stated that there was an oil trap (pcv system) in the intake manifold that was clogged and could cause the crank case to fail.the failure mileage was unknown.
Engine failure.car stalled while driving on highway.car was towed to wynn volvo.was told that the belts broke, leading to the breakage of the timing belt, located inside the engine, resulting in major damage to the engine.was given a quote of $5600 to repair.the car has 63000 miles and the manual does say that the belts need to be replace at 125 thousandmiles.the services suggested prior to this does not include any of the belts being replaced.i believe that this should be a recall or atleast considered in the services and now.if this is considered, i would hope that this would warrant volvo to repair my car at no cost to myself.
In august of 08 my 2004.5(new body style) volvo s40 t5's engine began to make a high screeching noise at idle and the check engine light came on. It had 61,000miles and i brought it to the dealership where they diagnosed that it needed a new oil trap. The problem has not recurred. My wife's 05 s40 t5 has 58,000miles and the same problem has occurred in her's. There must be an issue with this vehicle.
Engine failure.car stalled while on highway.upon arrival at volvo service dealer, i was told that a drive belt broke, leading to the breakage of the timing belt and subsequent extreme damage to the engine.all belts, pistons, valves and top part of engine needed replacing.approximate damage was $5000.car has only 85k on it, drive belt and timing belt have a recommended replacement in manual as 125k.volvo did nothing to acknowledge this issue, in fact calling out the service record which is impeccable minus a 50k service which would've cost $1500 and did not include any maintenance to the timing belt.in looking up this issue on many websites, it would appear this is not atypical for this make, model and year volvo.
1) i had to change a flat tire and used the vehicle supplied scissor jack. I noticed that it got increasingly difficult to turn the jack to raise the car. Eventually it got so stiff that it required both arms to turn the lever.2) the jack suddenly failed and the car came crashing down onto the pavement. No damage to the vehicle as the tire was still on the axle. No personal injury as both arms were on the jack's lever arm. Upon closer inspection, i noticed the worm screw was somehow stripped.3) reported to volvo customer service and was told to bring the jack back to the dealership for a warranty replacement.
Often, the headlamps bulbs fail, after a few years changing bulbs, i found out that due to contact between detachment of the wiring harness cover is the cause of the failure bulbs in right and left headlamps. The wiring harness installed by the manufacturer do not resist voltage and heat.
I have researched volvo forums and found that volvo completed recall #181 for a fuel pressure sensor. (http://ss.otheron.com/rkelly/video/r181+retailer+letter+-+final.pdf)while i don't own a vehicle included in volvo recall 181, i do own a volvo which shares the same fuel pressure sensor.here is the background:i drive a 2005 volvo s40, t5 awd. I am the only person whom has ever owned this car. In september 2011 my fuel pressure sensor failed and i was charged approximately $550 at the dealership to have it replaced. It failed while i was driving on the highway. I had also experienced power-surge type behaviors during start-up, after the car had set overnight or during my workday.yesterday, with the kids in the car, i was driving along about 60mph and all of a sudden is was like my car had stalled out.the brakes worked and turn signals worked. However, the steering had tightened up.all of the lights on the dashboard were lit. I coasted to the far right lane and turned on my caution lights, still being in the actual road. I turned the key off and then restarted the car. The car started ok.as soon as i arrived home it happened again; this was not even 5 miles and 15 minutes later.the current fuel pressure sensor part number shows bosch part- 31272730; which, again, was new as of 2011. I'm concerned that the replacement part is now failing- almost 2 years later and less than 7,000 miles later!recently i have also found the issues with the power-surge during start up have began recurring.until researching the issue i was unaware there was a relation between the power-surge and fuel pressure sensor.i have an appointment on monday to drop off my car at volvo. At this point i don't have confidence that the root cause and complete scope have been identified in volvo recall #181 or that replacing this part will correct the safety issue.

The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated that the vehicle would stalls randomly with the illumination of the power service warning light. The contact took the vehicle to a mechanic and was told that the pump electronic module was failing and that there was a recall for the failure (nhtsa campaign id number: 08v033000-fuel system gasoline: delivery: fuel pump). The contact spoke with the manufacturer and was told that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 71,000.

The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel pump electronic module had failed due to rusting and corrosion. The fuel pump electronic module was replaced and the failure was remedied. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the nhtsa campaign number 08v033000 (fuel system, gasoline). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. Additionally, the vehicle was originally sold in the state of california and had been driven in the state of michigan the past 6 years. The failure mileage was 147,000.
A 2005 volvo s40 t5 model has repeating fuel line leakage. The car was serviced to replace the originalpolyamide fuel line to a teflon fuel line in line with recall r158. After four years the teflon fuel line was become worn and fuel has begun to flow from the line. The average fuel line life is well beyond four years. There is an underlying issue with the fuel line with the 2005 volvo s40 t5.

Volvo s40 year 2004.5problems with engine start and engine check light coming on due to possible problem with fuel pump electronics.recalls are only impacting certain u.s. States to have the part replaced.what about recalls for owners residing overseas under government orders?
The fuel control module failed, causing an immediate stall.there is a tsb concerning the placement of this module.it is to be moved from the engine compartment to behind the back seat.water got into the module causing it to melt down!!!
I was told by shop that work on my car that were a recall on the pvc vaul on the 2005 volv s40 2.4.
The car starts missing then stalls out after about 30miles of driving it stalled in the middle of crossing a 4 lane and was about hit.it is the pem they had recalls on them but not my car for some reason
Fuel pump control module (pem) fails during wet conditions.car will crank like normal but will not start.let car dry out for a few days and then the car will run normal again.
Every time i drive the car it misses a little then it just shuts down like it's not getting any fuel the car don't die just won't pull out i tried to cross a 4 lane and it stalled in the first lane and i about got hit in the side it also did it on the interstate.it is very dangerous i was told it's the electronic fuel module,or pen and was told there was a recall on that part all over the internet but volvo said there wasn't which i don't believewhy would the internet say there was on like 5or notre websites
Takata recall.i had engine stuttering at high speed.my fuel pressure sensor failed and was replaced.i question why it is not covered under the nhtsa campaign i.d. # 07v226000 which is for the same part in the same engine but in 2004 s60 models.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. While driving various speeds on several occasions, the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump electronic module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 08v033000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.
3 of the 4 door lock actuators on my car have stopped working. This happened right after the warranty expired. The locks will not longer lock or unlock. This is a safety issue. Please look at requiring volvo to fix this issue. It is a know issue due to faulty parts.
November 15, 2005 my volvo s40's parking brake failed to work properly.after parking my car and leaving the garage the brake "slipped" and rolled out of the spot hitting another car.my car had 2,899 miles on it.when returning to my car that night ifound that my parking brake had "slipped" and my volvo had drifted down the ramp of my parking garage and struck another car.the morning of the accident, i pulled into my parking spot, set my parking brake, sat in my car a few minutes collecting my personal items from my front seat, and back seat, shut front and back door and walked down the ramp while looking back to make sure that my car was locked.the owner of the other car was already on the scene writing a report with the parking garage manager when i arrive at my car that afternoon.i went to get in my volvo and move it but before i got in it, i noticed that the parking brake was still on as i had left it that morning.i showed this to both witnesses prior to getting in my volvo, they both were already aware the parking brake was on.the police were called and arrived on the scene but didn't do a report since no one was injured per their policy.i made an appointment to take my volvo to the dealership to have the parking brake checked.the next morning i called volvo corporate critical care department and expressed my safety concern about my volvo.i was instructedto take my volvo to get checked out and i informed her that i had an appointment for november 21, 2005.i was told a specialist would look the car over.when i picked my car up on november 21st i was told that the specialist looked at my volvo and the parking brake had needed to be adjusted to manufacturer's specifications because it was not in line with specifications.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated that vehicle stalled with the illumination of the information sensor light. The vehicle was not repaired nor was the manufacturer notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. The contact stated the seat belt retractor in the rear has failed. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic shop who inspected the failure and stated the seat belt retractor assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 106,103.
Driver's side seat will squeak when making left or right turns as body weight shifts.volvo has put 2 "bandages" around the metal parts that make this noise.they know its a problem and its a design flaw, as they should have used bronze bushing or something similar to avoid the 2 metals contacting each other.is this a safety concern?maybe, what happens when metals constantly rubs over time?their bandaid solution is poor since the tape will wear and tear between each service.mileage is approx. 35,000, problem has been there since day 1.
The contact owns a 2005 volvo s40. While driving approximately 40 mph, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard and failed to stop the vehicle when it was depressed. The vehicle shook violently without warning. The contact let the vehicle decelerate and then slowly drove the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed that the brake vacuum pump failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 03v474000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Volvo first cleaned out the clogged line but carpets were wet again so they then replaced the entire line.
After letting the vehicle sit over night...when starting the vehicle in the morning there is no brake pressure after a half mile of driving.this happens everyday and this is a common problem with volvos.this problem could result in very serious problems and maybe even fatal to other volvo owners who are not aware of this common problem......i do know that on the volvo s40 2000 model this was a recall and it should also be on the volvo s40 2005 model.

As i accelerated to pass another car the overdrive got stuck.even as i hit the brakes the car didn't stop.i put it in neutral and it started making a sound as if something was holding it back and would not stop.after approximately 5 minutes of hitting the brakes the overdrive finally let go.i called the volvo and told them about the incident and they said it must be the computer and that i should just take the car to get it fixed.this could have caused a serious accident and even death.what is worse i had my granddaughter, who is just a toddler, in the back seat.
Windshield wipers are causing scratches in the windshield.i feel this is a defect with the wiperblades causing dirt to scratch the windshield making it very difficult to see.
I was driving down the highway when there was a loud boom in my car that sounded like a gunshot. Glass then came down on and around me in my car. I pulled over as quickly as possible. It looks like the glass from my sunroof came up and out of my car. It did not appear as if anything hit it. There is a large gaping hole in my sunroof.

2005 volvo s40.consumer writes in regards to defective sun roof drainage that lead to vehicleelectrical damage.the consumer noticed water leaking in the vehicle and soaking the floor mats behind the driver's seat. Years later, the dealer informed the consumer there was known defect in the sunroof drains, that caused them to become clogged and flood the floor, where electrical components were stored. Although, the drainage clogs could be cleared, it would only be a temporary fix due to the defect, and the dealer informed the consumer the electrical system was likely already damaged from all the leaking and it would cost $5,000 to fix. The consumer stated over the years, he noticed relatively minor problems due to the lasting water damage, such as reduced and inconsistent performance, and random error messages appearing and disappearing .
Windshield wipers are ineffective. Dealer tried polishing the windshield, replacing the blades, and eventually replaced the windshield. We tried to increase the frequency of cleaning the blades. There was no improvement. Here is a link to a forum for the volvo s40 t5 that shows that others are having the same problem.http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=49251.
