The vehicle was involved in a rear end accident. Upon impact, thewindshield blew out, the seats reclined and the air bags failed to deploy.

This is to describe airbag injuries.my car performed well.if not for the airbag and good construction of this volvo i would not be here to ask for your help. I am wondering why we still use explosive materials and a device that causes so many injuries.there has to be another device to absorb the force of impact than an explosive device that injures, maim, and can kill people.i want to send images of my injuries which are extensive.is this what happens each time the airbags ignite? i was close due to my small stature.the bag hit me in the chest and face.volvo is a safe car.i was traveling at 55mph,a woman stopped her car in the passing lane feet in front of me, everyone was doing 55 mph and more.there was nowhere to go to escape the impact.frederick, md hwy 15 south at 7th street has many oncoming ramps, there needs to be warning about oncoming and stopped vehicles.the speed limit is 65mph before these fast-moving on-ramps.a flashing light would also help.

Defective air bag control module.

This happened yesterday 1/28/16 and in april 2015 (the dealership "fixed it" but it didn't work!!!!)yesterday, while driving home from work, the car did the scariest thing i've ever experienced while driving. All the lights on the dash, all the warning lights flashed several times and the car came to a complete standstill. No power at all. It didn't slow to a stall, no weird sounds...it just literally stopped in it's tracks. Right there, in the road. All of a sudden my car shut off. When i say shut off i mean the headlights, dome lights, engine....anything that was electrical completely shut off. This would include the steering wheel locking up. Imagine driving on the freeway/highway in the middle of the night with traffic around you and your lights going out, steering wheel locking and having no way to control the vehicle. This could have killed me and my baby.last night, i has nightmares all night long of that happening on the freeway or the trestle with my baby. Where i drive frequently. Had that have happened there, i could have been killed especially if a semi truck was behind me, as is often the case. They can't stop that fast. Most people can't stop that fast going 55-75 mph. I had been on the trestleabout 15 minutes before it happened. And i am petrified to think what could have happened since i often have my baby in the car. The car is at the dealership in service. They cannot find anything wrong with it. The check engine light didn't come on, so there are no codes. They cannot get it do it again.

While driving, vehicle will loose electrical power and shut off. Sometimes prior to this happening lights will dim and flicker. Sometimes the engine will stumble. This seems to happen more when it is hot outside and the ac is on. This happens mostly when car is at idle or low speeds. Car was taken to dealer and they cannot duplicate the problem.

While driving vehicle lost all electrical power.dealer has been contacted, cannot locate source of problem, please provide further details.

While driving 40 mph, my car engine stopped.after being in the shop for a month, they detected that the tackometer was bad and replace it.this is a major safety issue in that i do not feel comfortable driving the car anymore.it has not occurred again but i think this needs to be researched.regarding the radio, we have had problems with this over the last year.i have had them look at the problem at least 12 times.we are having static throughout the chicagoland area.

Bought a new 2000 volvo s40 in april of 2000. The car now has 60,000 miles on it....light driving by most standards. At 18,000 miles rear brakes and rotors were replaced at a cost of more than $400.front and rear brakes have been replaced another time since then.on 9/21/05, i have now also had to replace the alternator at a cost of $600.this car only has 60,000 miles on it.i have read a lot of other discussions online from other 2000 volvo s40 owners who also complain about the car running through brakes every 15-20,000 miles.

Dealerreplaced,in the past two years, headlights/alternator/tail lights, andsignal lights, but the problem was still occurring.

Buttons in steering forhorn can be depressed 1/2 inch with heavy force applied to them beforehorn will activate. Dealership has examinedvehicle, and replaced connectors. Thisfailed to remedyproblem.please provide any additional information / attachments.

Defective electronic control unit.

Unable to remove key for the ignition.

Vehicle will not start for any reason occasionally.

The starter keeps getting stuck in the forward position, i have to manually turn it back to the correct position. Also, it is taking about 5 seconds to start the car.

Both headlights almost simutaneously went out while driving. Dealer notified, and made repairs. The dealer replaced both bulbs,at 16766 the brakes were replaced, the dealer suggested that since asbestos has been removed from brake pads that the brake life is shorter.nlmconsumer suggest that manufacturer design a back up lighting system in case of headlight failure.

Instrument panel was defective. Warning lightskept coming on.also, engine checklight comes onalong with windshieldwiper lights, and etc.contacted dealer, and the dealer did notknow what the problem was.

The car has problems starting and takes a few tries before starting up. Have also had a problem where the car was in park with the parking brake engaged and the car was revving on its own. There have also been problems while the car has been slowing down on the freeway, specifically when the brakes are being engaged the car will attempt to move forward as though it is trying to push pass the fact that the brakes are being engaged. As well as the car will accelerate faster than the gas pedal is being pushed e.g when the gas pedal is slightly pushed the car will accelerate quickly as though the gas pedal was being pushed upon firmly.

I was stopped at a red light behind several cars. The light turned green and i took my foot off the brake, but did not put my foot on the accelerator. The car engine revved up and lurched forward despite me attempting to brake heavily. The brakes would not fully decompress causing me to rear end the vehicle in front of me. I purchased the car used with 134,100 miles. I noticed about 5 months after purchase that the engine would rev and the rpm's would remain high without pressing on the accelerator and the car will move approximately 10-15 mph without pressing on the accelerator. When roads are wet or when it has been raining, the car is difficult in braking and the brakes often "freeze" where the brake pedal cannot be depressed. Brakes were replaced, but the issue persists. Also, at times, the car engine continues to rev when pressing on the brakes. Lastly, the engine light came on, it was indicated via a diagnostic test that there was a misfire with one of the spark plug coils. All spark plugs and coils/ignition coils were replaced, engine light persisted. At the time the temp sensor and the thermostat was replaced as the ignition coils and spark plugs did not alleviate the issue. When a following diagnostic test was performed indicated that the coolant temp sensor has low voltage. Sometimes the car engine will turn, but the car will not fully turn on and i need to wait about 10 minutes (or until the fan turns off) before being able to attempt to start the car. Due to the issues with the car, the car cannot get an inspection sticker, and it does not seem safe to drive. Due to massachusetts car laws, we cannot sell the car due to lemon law and the car is worth more than scraping. We also had a broken axel and coil that were replaced after hitting a pothole.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s40.while driving 60 mph the contact smelled oil burning.three minutes later the engine completely shut off.the vehicle was towed to a mechanic, whodeterminedthat the engine overheated due to lack of coolant.the check engine lightilluminated, and then quickly dim whenever the vehicle had a full tank of gas.the current and failure mileages were 80,000.

When driving within 10-15 mph or 30-35 mph vehicle stalled. Vehicle been to the dealer on 4 separate occasions, butproblem recurred.

Unintended acceleration occurred with car in drive.car began to accelerate slowly increasing speed with foot off accelerator.pulled up on accelerator with no results.put car into neutral and rpm increased to 6000 rpm then back to 750 idle speed.back into drive and engine accelerated again.engine shut off via key then it wouldn't start again.cranked but would not turn over.dealer replaced ect because of failure of part.

Both of the vehicle's front shocks failed.when the shocks failed the consumer could hear rattling abd clunking noise in the front end of the vehicle while driving.the vehicle's thermostat failed which caused the check engine light to illuminate.

I have volvo s40 2000 which i purchased in october 1999. I brought my car to service regularly, it was serviced while in warranty by the royal motor sales who sold me this car. On the second service i have been told that my rear brakes completely worn out and they have to change not only brake pads but also rotors and something else, i ended up paying $1000+ for that "service". Interestingly enough i have been told at dealership that it is very common problem for my car kind to have rear brake pads wear out quickly and they have to be changed every 5000-7000 miles (no information on that in the owners manual, either nobody warned me about that on the first service, better yet they did not even checked rear brake pads nor tell me how much of it left). Now when my warranty is over i noticed very loud metallic banging noise that comes from under the hood. I took the car to independent volvo mechanic since i do not trust dealer any more. Mechanic fixed actually 2 different parts that were making some noise. I paid $330 and took my car home, just to find that loud noise is still there when i was going over bumps in the road. I took my car back and mechanic ordered yet another part which only came 2 weeks later. Now my car is at the mechanic's who called and told me that there more parts to be changed and that his friend at dealership told him that it is very common warranty repair on my car kind. Well they got lucky in my case, i am over on my warranty by 2000 miles. But will i buy volvo ever again? - no way!!! will i suggest to anyone to buy a volvo? - only to someone i dislike!.*la

The check engine light came on, possible engine related problems.nlm

Vehicle experiencing a problem with stalling while decelerating and/or accelerating from a stop position in heavy traffic.vehicle been in / out of dealer shop, andproblemstill occurring.please feel free to provide any further details on this matter .

A slight squeaking or squealing noise could be heard from under the hood of the car, no visible defects apon inspection.the sound was the water pump failing. As iwas taking the car to the mechanic the water pump failed (ceased) and caused the belt driving the water pump to snap.the water pump was driven by the timing belt.i am told that when the timing belt snaps that serious damage occurs to the engine. I cannot understand why a failure of such an ordinary part can cause such damage.volvo stated that the repairs can run from 3-6 thousand dollars.i had to have the car towed, ferried and towed again to get to the closet dealer.

The comsumer hears static in the radio, the dealer cleaned the antenna, but the problem reoccured.nlm

Turn signals will stop working intermittently. When it happens neither lh nor lh turn signal will illuminate and neither exterior bulb nor dash indicator will illuminate. Turning on the hazard lights will jump start the turn signals to work again. Turn signal relay (under dash near driver kick panel) has been replaced with no improvement. Used to only happen on very hot days. Now happens regardless the ambient temp.

Headlight burned out for 2nd time in less than 30,000 miles.

Noticed decreased visibility driving at night.the aiming mechanism on both headlamps has disintegrated causing loss of the headlamp calibration and allowing the headlamps to aim downward to a point approximately 30' in front of the vehicle. The failure is continuous, results in reduced visibility. Nothing has been done to correct the problem. Replacement parts are prohibitively expensive and volvo customer service has disavowed any responsibility for the failure due to the age and mileage of the vehicle, (2000 s40 with 130k mi.)the service manager at my local volvo dealership has said that he has seen this failure on other volvos of similar age and mileage including one owned by his son.

Seals on oil line headlight have been replaced numerous times.

Headlamp buld burned out (12380 miles).

The head lights failed.

2000 s40 purchase new.i have replaced 8-10 headlights already.vehicle has been costly to maintain.dealer has taken a minumum of 3 visits to locate problems.none has been resolved completely. Problems with high pitch whistling noise staring at 60 mph took back several times not able to stop noise before warranty expired.recently: vehicle ran rough took in to delaer for 90k tune-up.dealer said bushing on motor mounts are gone cost to replace is $800.noticed the drivers side power window going out now.

While driving a warning light comes on and vehicle feels like it's coasting. When appling gas vehicle will not accelerate, like it is not in gear.

The key has been sticking in my ignition when i park. This time when i could not get the key out, i restarted the car in park, of course with my foot on the brake. The car jumped into reverse and flew backwards out of my garage at a high rate of speed. It crossed the road and ended up knocking down a garage and totaling the car. The brakes were on as evidenced by the tire tread and skid marks. It was a bizarre occurrence and very frighteningly.

Vehicle serviced for brake noise.no action taken by dealer.

It was close to 9pm. I had exited the freeway to stop in a parking lot to check directions. I had been driving for about an hour, so i got out to walk around and buy a cup of coffee. I came back a few minutes later and drove out of the lot. The on ramp was about 200 yards away and there was a red light at the intersection, so i was only moving at around 20mph. I was the only car in my lane, so about 100 feet away from the intersection i pressed down on my brake pedal, but the for some reason it the car kept rolling. I tried again, but the brakes were no help as i kept rolling. Frantically, i stomped hard, floored the brakes, and my car started to slow down a little, but that time it was too late. I tried to turn to the right to avoidthe flow of traffic, but an instant later i had hit an oncoming car. I don't know what went wrong. I am pretty good at maintaining the car and it had been serviced at the volvo dealer fairly recently. It's only garaged about half the time, but i live in southern california so it's never been exposed to an extreme climate or anything. There was a thunderstorm that morning, and the roads were very wet earlier in the day, but the storm broke around noon: 7 or 8 hours before i left home that night. By that time all of the roads had dried.

Volvo has designed this car with a separate vacuum pump which can fail or have a fuze blow and disable the abs and leave the car with only a mechanical brake. Volvo has refused to discuss this situation with me.

Rear brakes go on averageat 8,000-16,000 miles, which is unacceptable.i also have conitinuous problems stopping my car, which the dealer says the cannot duplicate.the problems are not related to the rear brakes needing replacement.i believe it is more a hydraulics problem.there is a bulletin out there for the problem, but dealer states does not apply to my car.i have found aver 50 other people with the same problem that i will refer to this site.as for gas consumption, it may or may not be a safetly issue.mileage was 21 mpg, dropped to 16.5.dealer messed with trip computer to make me think my mileage improved, however upon my division skills it is still the same as when i took it in.this deceptive practice doesn't make me very happy that they just repaired my rear brakes.

Both the front and rear brake pads on my car are wearing prematurely, and the rear brake pads are wearing more quickly than the front.my car has only 14,171 miles on it and i already have to replace the pads, i believe this to be a sign of either defective pads, or a manufacturer problem with the entire brake system.also, the dashboard warning light is failing to give the proper warning of the wear, thus place the driver at risk for additional component failure, and raising safety concerns.dt

Rear brake pads on my car are completely worn down to metal and the metal is cutting into the rotors, this is on both rear wheels assemblies.i took the car to the dealer to have them replaced iunder warranty and was told this could not be done since i had over 12,000 miles onthe car, even theoughthe car is only 10 months old.my car is not safe to drive without rear brakes, though the dealer let me drive away anyway.my problem is this, the volvo dealer, two diferent service managers, and volvo north america customer service have informed me that this situation is "normal" and they experience this type of problem with many customers on a weekly basis.if this it indeed true, then why would volvo not make a notation in the owners manual, under the maintenance section, to check brake pads on a frequent basis.i have followed the maintenance requirements to the 't', which clearly states that brake pads should be inspected at 7,500 and 15,000 miles.if as volvo suggests, the pads are not expected to last 15,000 miles, why in the world do they not notify owners of this dangerous situation?this is about the most absurb thing i have ever heard of.being a mechanic myself, i find this situation to be unbelievable.i have a hard time understanding why a manufacturer can stand there and tell me that i should not expect to get more that 12-15,000 on a set of brake pads.according to the service representative that i spoke to at volvo na, volvo is aware of the situation and working on finding a suitable replacement pad that will past longer.in the meantime, my family and i have been placed in a precarious situation, as well as thousands of other consumers, due to volvo's ineptitude, and general lack of concern for consumer safety.i am driving a car that i bought, because of it's safety reputation, then come to find out it could be a death trap if the rear brakes fail.i am also caught in a catch 22 with volvo.

Dealer replaced rear brake pads and said problem was related to a corroded caliper.dealer took no action to address the corroded caliper, (27679 miles).

We purchased this volvo s 40 on june 22, 2000 and have already had to replace the front and rear brake pads although the vehichle has less than 30,000 miles on it. The rear rotors had to be replaced as well due to the rear pads wearing out completely in approximately 22,000 miles. Our understanding is that the brake pads on most vehicles last approximately 50,000 miles or more. When we complained, we were told by union park maintenance and sales that the brake pads on the volvo s 40 are not expected to last more than 15,000 to 20,000 miles. My husband and i consider this premature brake pad degredation to be built-in obsolence and expect better from volvo. When we addressed our complaint to a sales manager at union park we were told to "get in line" with other s 40 owners, leading us to believe this is a widespread problem. To date, volvo has not acknowledged the problem or our complaint.

Rear left brake pads worn through at 26,000 miles.i have also been informed this situation is normal although it seems hard to believe that pads can be worn on cars this quickly.i have followed their maintenance requirements also.in addition, i live over 100 miles from my nearest dealer and replacement pads are not available through automotive parts stores.

In the last 6 months i have lost total braking ability 3 times while driving. The dealer is sighting a broken t-connector on a low pressure hose as the problem. Contacted the regional customer service. After 3rd time, without root cause analysis they said that they would replace with a brass t-connector, which to date they can not find. They consider the car safe to drive since brakes work currently, however they failed without warning the last 2 times. I was lucky enough to be in places where no accident occured. I did roll through a toll booth, stop sign on the first two occurances. Dealer will not reveal if this is a design defect, parts defects or something specific in this automobile. This car is not safe to drive on the road but volvo seems to not take it seriously.

The recall repair did not resolve the issue.it contiunes to be an intermittent problem and my lead to injury or even a death.

Brake pad failure was premature due to the added brake force that was necessary to stop the vehicle.*ph the brake pad rivets were scraping the rotors.the consumer needed to use extra force to apply the brakes.the consumer requested a rebate for the amount of repair. *scthe consumer received a recall letter in the mail regarding the issue. Dt*:the contact stated while turning or driving on an unleveled road, there was a metal grinding noise coming from the front suspension.this caused the vehicle to hit a curb and the vehicle became inoperable.the vehicle was pushed to the cotnact's residence, where it has been parked.

Both of the vehicle's front shocks failed.when the shocks failed the consumer could hear rattling abd clunking noise in the front end of the vehicle while driving.the vehicle's thermostat failed which caused the check engine light to illuminate.

2000 volvo ("v") s40.on below date i exit. Hwy after driving normal&within speed limit&park at a gas pump.i was at pump for 30 sec. When i heard "bang", "pop", "hiss",& front passenger side of car dipped down.tire had gone flat in 2 seconds.i & employees tried to change tire. We could not pull tire free. Coil around strut snapped&when unwinding (i assume), coil went through one side of back of tire & came out other side.tire was being held onto car by coil. Car was towed to nearest garage about 50 ft. Away.wasn't towed to nearest v dlr for many reasons inc. Dealer was at least 15 miles away, was 3:00 am by the time i could get a tow,& dlr had damaged my car on at least 2 occasions when i brought it there for service.tire that was punctured was less then 2 mon. Old because dealer had punctured it when i brought my car in for recall.i asked garage to keep detailed records of repairs, take pics if they had a digital camera,&save all parts so they could be exam. To determine why they failed.garage replaced pretty much the whole front end suspension on both sides.mechanic couldn't say why coil failed, but said (bearings were missing from top of strut (?)).i cld v on 8/2/04 & talked to sam. Told me that v wouldn't be able to determine how failure occrd since i had not had car fixed at v & that v would not reimburse me for over $1300 in repairs cuz i did not go to a v dealer. I told him v needed to find out why coil snapped because failure is virtually unheard of on other cars. Told me he would look into sending a field rep out to look at parts, all of which i saved.nhtsa needs to investigate complaints v has rec'd about this dangerous problem so it can be corrected. Had failure occurred 60 seconds sooner,i probably would not be alive right now,or would be very seriously injured.v does not seem to be taking this prob. Seriously & should investigate to determine if there is a common defect in part & reimburse me for having problem fixed.

Vehicle serviced for pull and harshness - dealer replaced rear struts.

1. Events = regular tire rotation in september 2008. Technician pointed out to me the corrosion and crack/failure in both rear coil springs. Mileage on the vehicle about 68,000 at time of discovery on my 2000 volvo s40.2. Corroded and cracked rear coil springs (both). The corrosion and crack were almost in the same location with the same amount of corrosion near the bottom (the first half-moon curve) of both springs where they are seated/braced. 3. October 2008 - took vehicle to local volvo dealer for evaluation. They ordered new rear coil springs. I returned a week later to have the new coil springs installed at the cost of approximately $550, plus alignment. The cost of the coil springs was approximately $220 for both. The remainder was labor.i wrote a letter to volvo of north america about this condition. I included photos, and i requested a refund. Volvo customer service of north america called me on november 6, 2008, and denied my request. I was told that my car was out of warranty, and the engineers described the problem as an "anomaly," not a defect.since i have a low mileage vehicle, i live in a "salt state," and certain saabs in salt states are being investigated for front coil spring failure, it would be interesting to know whether there is a connection with these vehicles and the rear coil springs.i have loaned the failed rear coil springs to a professor of automotive engineering to use in his upper level design class to use as an example of a failure. I could likely get the parts back, if needed.

On 3/4/2009, while doing other work to the car, a mechanic discovered that the rear passenger side coil spring was broken.it was broken at the lowest point and the car still sat level, so i was not even aware.i do not know how long it was broken.it looked like it just deteriorated over time.although over 9 years old, the car has less than 64,000 mile, so i would not expect a coil spring to deteriorate like that.the dealer replaced both rear coil springs for $773.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s40.the contact heard a loud, unfamiliar noise while driving.he discovered that the rear coil springs had failed on both the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle.he took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that it was unusual for both springs to fail simultaneously.the dealer did not state whether or not the vehicle was related to any recall(s) based on his vin.the current mileage is 130,000 and failure mileage was 128,000.

Instrument panel was defective. Warning lightskept coming on.also, engine checklight comes onalong with windshieldwiper lights, and etc.contacted dealer, and the dealer did notknow what the problem was.

While driving the vehicle the rear of the vehicle swayed & there was a clunking sound that was heard.upon inspection the rear coil springs were broken on both sides.while driving the car last week with just 130,000 miles the front end started clunking.upon inspection the front coil springs were also found broken.

Recently purchased used 2000 volvo s40 sedan.the horn is very difficult to operate, which i consider to be a dangerous safety problem.when i pointed this out to the service technician, he told me that it was a design flaw in the placement of the airbag module in the steering column.

Vehicle: volvo, s40 (year:2000), miles: 95,000vehicle has problems in line with the other 360,000 recalled volvos involving etm.why is s40 not part of recall?last weekend vehicle had recurrence of continuing problem.vehicle suddenly and violently down shifts at road and highway speeds.this has results in rapid slowing of vehicle and a massive rpm surge.this could result in a serious accident at highway speeds.vehicle acts like it shifts into "safe" or "limp" mode, but there are no trouble lights that come on.have replaced mass flow censor, which did not help.when it occurs, shutting vehicle off for a couple of minutes seems to "fix" the problem for awhile.in my opinion, this is a serious safety concern and appears related to the etm that has been the source of problems in other volvo vehicles.please add the s40 to the recall campaign.

Unintended acceleration on my 2000 volvo s40.accelerating in traffic without pressing pedal.must press brake hard to stop.continues to rev high.this has happened twice in the last month.after the first time, my service shop replaced the idle air control valve but it occurred again about a week and a half after that.service technician has indicated he cannot potentially diagnose unless it is occurring when he can drive and look at it.it is a serious risk for crash or injury.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s40. The contact stated with his foot on the brake pedal there was an increase in engine rpms and the vehicle lunged forward. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 130,000.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s40. The contact stated that while traveling 30 mph the vehicle's speed erroneously increased to 55 mph. The contact firmly depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The contact merged to the side of the road to restart the vehicle. The vehicle then functioned as normal. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic where it was found that the coolant temperature sensor had failed. The vehicle was repaired. The failure recurred several times after the repair. The failure mileage was 95,000 and the current mileage was 96,828. Updated 11/13/12 the idle control valve as replaced to correct the problem. However, the consumer continued to experience problems.updated 11/19/12

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s40. The contact stated that the vehicle would accelerate abnormally without depressing the accelerator pedal. The failure occurred intermittently whether driving in reverse or going forward, as well as when sitting at a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that they need to repair the electronic throttle control, idle control valve and the brake system. The repairs were not completed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 74,000.

Vehicle will suddenly accelerate, and while trying to brake vehicle still accelerates.

While slowing to a stop in a parking place (1-2mph), the vehicle suddenly accelerated.within 2 seconds, the vehicle jumped the curb, spinning the front wheels fast enough to dig 2 deep troughs in the gravel, and crashed into a brick wall 10 feet beyond the original parking space.the passenger airbag deployed shattering the windshield.the driver suffers only minor soreness thanks to the short distance between the parking space and the wall.this is certainly a defect in the s40.two other customer reports exist concerning a runaway throttle on the volvo s40:879358 & 878201.

I was pulling into my parking garage and my 2000 volvo s40 began to accelerate on its own.it revved up to 3000 rpms and i had to press hard on the brake for it to stop.i pulled over in the garage and placed the car in park.the car continued to rev.i stepped on the gas a couple of times and after about 4 minutes it returned to its normal operating rpm after which i was able to park the car.

Dealer/manufacturer claimed that no known problems existed, but nhtsa had complaint odi id 879358 since 7/1/2000. No safety defecgt listed.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s40.the contact stated that the vehicle would sporadically accelerate independently.the contact stated that the throttle was replaced in 2008 and the failure did not recur until 2010. Most recently, the contact was entering a parking lot when the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact was able to stop the vehicle by shifting into park.the manufacturer was notified and the contact was informed that her model was not involved in any recalls therefore any repairs would be at her expense.the vehicle was not repaired.the vin was not available. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000 and the current mileage was approximately 98,000.

Three times my daughter's 2000 volvo s40 accelerated unexpectedly. Twice (on the same night) it almost pulled her into a busy intersection. The third time it happened to the service manger (jeff) at a local volvo dealership. After two visits from a technician from volvo it was determined that a temperature sensor had failed. This failure led to excess air being fed to the engine which in turn led to excess fuel being fed to the engine, which in turn accelerated the engine. Volvo replaced a temperature control sensor that operates the air slide in the engine on 12/7/05.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s40. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle accelerated independently without warning. The contact mentioned that the brake pedal was depressed in order to slow down or stop the vehicle. The failure occurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 99,900.

The contact owns a 2000 volvo s40.while driving under wet conditions at 25 mph the vehicle began to accelerate.the driver was able to stop the vehicle.however, the engine continued to accelerate. Without accelerating the vehicle continued to move forward.in an attempt to park the vehicle, the engine began to redline and the driver turned the ignition off.the vehicle was towed to the dealer to diagnose the failure.the vehicle and failure mileage was 73,000.

My 2000 volvo s40 had another unintended acceleration episode on april 12, 2010 (i filed a previous complaint #10288666 in oct 2009).on the highway it would go 60 mph without depressing the gas pedal (and no it was not stuck and there was no floor mat in the way).the last time this occurred was six or seven months earlier.the ect sensor was replaced at that time.this last time the volvo memphis dealership replaced the ect sensor and it has not occurred again.....yet.this was the third ect sensor replaced in about a year's time.i asked that volvo corporate be involved to check out why this was happening.they had a field technician ride in the car with me and check it out.basically they shared no reason for the recurrent replacement of the ect sensor and even though i continued to try to get an answer (and reimbursement for the repeat repairs).this is one of the emails i received from the volvo investigator after their inspection and my continued dissatisfaction with not identifying a root cause ---- "[xxx] ,i can certainly understand your disappointment in having to replace the same part three times.as stated, if the symptoms reoccur, please either contact me directly, or contact the service manager at volvo of memphis, randy pearson, so that we may get been involved once again to review your concerns regarding your vehicle.to date, your vehicle is performing as designed.thank you for allowing us the opportunity to inspect your vehicle. Erica kirschproduct investigation coordinatorvolvo cars or north america"i am not interested in continuing to pursue this just because of repair costs i feel should be covered by volvo.the symptoms i have repeatedly experienced are scary and a huge safety issue.i also saw an on complaint #10288666 filed on feb 18 2010 that sounds like the same issue as mine.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Defective windows.

The vehicle was involved in a rear end accident. Upon impact, thewindshield blew out, the seats reclined and the air bags failed to deploy.

Instrument panel was defective. Warning lightskept coming on.also, engine checklight comes onalong with windshieldwiper lights, and etc.contacted dealer, and the dealer did notknow what the problem was.

The windshield wipers chatter, the dealer removed the wax.nlm

I contacted my volvo dealer 3 months ago for replacement whipper blades.the parts manager explained that the replacement part is defective.it "wobbles" on the windshield.he said to wait 2 months for new one.i contacted him a week ago and the problem was still there.i went to the dealer and the service manager put a set on my car and showed me how they will wobble and fall off.i contacted volvo usa and was told "they know about the problem, but are not making any changes."they felt they would only fall off if the wiper was lifted from the windshield like for cleaning.

Neither i nor volvo roadside assitance able to remove wheel to install spare tire.vehicle towed to local garage.

Lugnuts came loose on right front wheel, car is always serviced here and we always hand torque lug nuts. Odd thin is this is the 2nd 2000 volvo s40 we have seen do this and i assume many are not reported and considered installer error.
