The console and steering wheel were wet from rain. The srs dash warning light came on. About 5 miles after that, the driver's side air bag deployed. The bag was the original bag. The srs light had gone on once 20 months before when the console got wet. The dealership ran a test for about $115 each on both occasions and said the cause of the srs light coming on was indeterminate.twenty months ago a top, longtimevolvo dealership service manager assured me that air bags never go off without an impact. He said there had not been a single occasion of that ever happening. I should have googled the topic. I would have seen right away that he didn't know what he was talking about.two bones in my forearm were broken and heavy bruises that are still visible 5 weeks later were left on my stomach and thighs.corporate offices and the dealership say the bag was out of warranty; a replacement steering wheel to install a new bag is not available; and that they will not disconnect the passenger bag, though i consider it a time bomb.before writing an email attempting to place the blame on me, erica at "the executive offices of volvo" left an apparently inane voice mail that i have saved for now saying "this is not exactly a spontaneous deployment. We do know why the bag deployed in your vehicle." i emailed back that her claim that "we" know what caused the bag to deploy "struck me as odd because no one at the volvo [dealership] this past week said that they knew." even after running a check on the srs system, and charging me $115 to do so, they still said they did not know. In fact a few weeks ago two long time service managers were saying my experience was unprecedented or impossible. I suggested in another email to erica that the corporation had a moral obligation to inform their service managers of documented cases of spontaneous deployment.

Airbag deployment was violent, causing burns and injuries.*aw

The vehicle hit another vehicle head-on at 20mph, and both the airbags deployed, allowing a chemical to be released and burn the driver. Vehicle has been totaled.

While traveling on ramp at 5 mphair bags deployed without any indication. Driver and passanger were injured.

If the crash sensor located in the center console under the original equipment cup holder between the two front seats gets wet it will disable the air bags, and the seat belt will not work. The dealer wants the owner to pay 1158 to correct the problem that he is having with the electrical system, causing the air bag and the seat belt not to work if either function gets wet. Vehicle also experienced flashing lights and dealer stated this was due to a faulty regulator, consumer feels that the crash sensor did not get wet due to it had not been opened for inspection, consumer feels that there is an elecrical problem that is causing lights to flash and potential problems with the air bags.

I own a 1994 volvo 850 sedan. I was parked on a busy downtown portland st. And got in my car, turned on the ignition and my airbag deployed. It was so loud i thought i had been shot. (as did passersby) my car filled with what i thought was smoke (due to gunpowder smell) and got out quickly. I was very distraught and in shock...my arms and chest had burns and cuts and bruises instantly. I went to the er..thankfully nothing broken but now my insurance company (farmer's) is saying it's not covered since it is "so rare" and they feel "defective equipment". I then contacted volvo headquarters and they are saying that since the car is 14 yrs. Old there couldn't possibly be a "factory defect". At this point i'm not sure what's going to happen but nobody seems to be able to help me with this. I feel like i am such an innocent victim in all this. All i did was try to start my car...........

I believe it's the electronic throttle control.i've had the part replaced and yet the car still runs poorly.it stalls, looses speed, and quits running all together.it is a very serious and dangerous situation.

Recently read an article in usa today about volvo's stalling, losing speed and etc.that perfectly describes my problem with my 1994 volvo 850 sedan.over the last 2 years we have had very similar occurrences with our car losing speed and dying in traffic.after each incident it has restarted after a couple of minutes and will not repeat the failure with any frequency.i have had the car to my mechanic and to a volvo dealership.both places have no clue what is causing the problem and since we cannot duplicate the problem it makes it more difficult to diagnose.i realize the investigation is for the year 1999 - 2001 but i hope there are others out there like me and you might consider extending the number of years your are investigating.

I am having problems with my car cutting off while driving. Strangely, first it started out cutting off whenever i would make a right turn. The car would just cut off, all the lights in the dash would come on. I have had three auto repair places look at it. Of course i was advised to do several things which they thought would fix the problem. It did not. Well the lastest and worst happened on 8/6 when the car cut off while driving and on a busy street. Fortunately, i was able to coast to the far side and switch the car off and it started right back up. Please i need help. I am scared to get on the interstate in fear that it will shut down on me.

Front passenger replacements and original rim cracked three times within thirty days, resulting in flat tires, replace rims three times.ttfirst occasion, hit a pot hole and tire busted and wheel cracked, second occastion, hit a bump and tire went flat and wheel cracked, on third occasion, hit a hole and wheel cracked again, consumer states craked wheels only occur on the front passenger side.right rear seat back not operating properly.weather stip defective, kept falling off.jack broke prior to recall.battery was replaced.engine torque arm broke and was replaced.

The car struck a pothole in a jackson, ms residential street while traveling at the posted speed limit (35mph).this action caused the horn to stick.according to my mechanic, this problem is common on this type model and year of volvo.he says the cause is electrical contact problems in the horn assembly which causes the entire steering wheel to need replacing (approx $800 cost). Similar problems have been reported with the contact assy (re report # 705930).this problem is safety related. My wife had to drive in traffic after the event with the horn blasting away.although no accident was caused by this, it still should be investigated for possible recall/re-design, especially in a car product that is sold with emphasis on safety related features.in addition, the horn is fused on the same circuit as the windshield wiper.in order to shut off the horn, i disabled it be removing the fuse.on my way to the shop for repairs, a thunderstorm occurred which made it impossible for me to drive without the benefit of windshield wipers.although no accident occurred, i was certainly placed in great danger given the amount of traffic around me on a section of highway that was under construction.thank you.

Horn failed.

Horn comes on and off intermittently, and without prior warning there is no sound.also, afterfifth attemp to start,it comes on. Dealership toldconsumer that her contactswere bad.

I could not remove my key when i turned off the ignition.tried all combinations of gear positions, etc, nothing worked.problem is the number of cars stolen in the us with keys left in the ignition. A recall should be launched to prevent this potential problem. The mechanical design of the car should not be a contributing cause to this national problem.a fail safe mechanism with over ride capabilities should be included in every car design to make sure this does not happen!dt

The steering wheel material on which the horn ring was mounted disintegrated.the result was the electrically charged horn mechanism intolerably adjacent to the airbag mechanisme in the steering wheel.the horn electrics had to be disconnected as did the airbag to operate the vehicle without danger of incorrectly activating the air bag and causing an accident.*mjs

I have had the smell of gas and evidence of leaks at the gas tank for about two years plus. I called volvo two years ago about the recall(nhtsa # ea03008 from july/2004). I was told that my car vin does not match the recall. I just had the tank pulled by my mechanic and it is a plastic tank which is leaking from the 3 bolts which attach it to the heat shield- exactly as described in the recall- and it has been operated in a hot weather state(tx).this should be included in this recall. What could possibly exclude this from recall. I am getting the runaround from volvo.

Ltr fm owner of a volvo who repaired link in the gas tank seal.consumer seeking reimbursement repair covered by recall.*mr

The gas tank leaked.

On june 1, 2004, my 1994 volvo 850 was leaking gas on my driveway.the car was towed to volvo village in clearwater for repair and they replaced the gas tank.i paid $790.i learned on 2/1/05 that there was a recall for volvo 850 for the gas tank, recall r139, involving 226,000 volvo 850s including my 1994 year. Recall number: 04v368000. Make : volvomodel : 850year : 1994manufacturer : volvo cars of n.a. Consumernoticed fuel on driveway. During inspection, mechanic determined that fuel tank was leaking at the seams. Seamswere coming apart near top of tank.

Consumer took vehicle to mechanic for routine maintenance. While vehicle was being serviced it was brought to consumer's attention that there was a crack infuel tank. Consumer contacted dealer to schedule an appointment for correction ofproblem. Defective fuel tank was replaced at a cost of owner.

Fuel tank cracked ondriver's side and is causingfuel to leak ontotail pipe.

I have a 1994 volvo 850. I have a leak where the heat shield is attached to the gas tank. Volvo is well aware of this problem but my vin does not show the recall.the leak of gas is 100% from the recalled spot heatshield side of the gas tank. This is a safety issue because it could blow back on the exhaust and cause a fire.

We smell gas. When stop notice fuel leaking from fuel entry pipe. When got closer look it was leaking from fuel entry pipe that connected to fuel tank.

The contact owns a 1994 volvo 850.the vehicle check strap has failed and is causing the metal to wear out and damage the hinges.the failure is creating a hole in the door.the dealer stated that the pillars need to be replaced.the cost for the repair is $947.the powertrain was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 18,700.

Because of failure of internal latching mechanisms, the doors of the 1994 volvo 850 (and possibly other models) after being closed can suddenly and without warning be rendered permanently closed and unable to be opened from either inside or outside the vehicle.use of the vehicle key, door locks or door handles are ineffective at allowing an affected door to be opened, even though unaffected doors will continue to unlock, lock, close and open normally. The issue occurred on my vehicle on both rear doors, although at different times.occupants can become entrapped inside the vehicle, making timely egress in the event of an emergency impossible, especially for elderly, disabled or infant passengers, who may have to climb or be pulled over seatbacks in order to exit via a door that is still operational.exiting via a rear window of this vehicle without personal injury would be extremely unlikely or impossible for most people.

While the vehicle was parked and the emergency parking brake engaged. The vehicle commenced to roll into the consumer. The consumer jump into the trunk while the vehicle continued to roll down the street until it ran into another vehicle.the consumer sustained injuries to her neck and minor cuts and bruises. The vehicle was on an incline.

When first started, the car will not automatically shift.manually moved to 2nd gear will sometimes shift and then back to drive.if put into low gear the upshift light illuminates and the car acts like it is running in the wrong gear regardless of the postion of the auto gear shifter.

Transmission did not engage in reverse.car rolled forward when parked on hill; thinking that it needed more gas to go backwards i accelerated, gear engaged after five seconds sending car backwards surprisingly fast.this slippage in reverse reoccurs about 70% of the time.if a pedestrian was either at the front or back of my car this defect could have led to an accident.
