The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that the brake pedal would travel to the floor when depressed. The dealer stated that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for state inspection and no failure codes were present at that time. The dealer was unable to repair the vehicle. A couple of weeks later, while driving 32 mph, the brakes failed and the contact crashed into the rear passenger side bumper of the preceding vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 189,000.

Dashboard shows airbag fault. Google search indicate this is a common problem for vw passat. Yet, vw has not issued any recall.

Side impact air bags failed to deploy, despite significant damage to driver's side front and rear doors from a direct impact. Also damaged was the "b" post, along with 12" intrusion into passenger space.

Vw passat was involved on head-on collision (35mph), with most of the damage observed on driver's side.driver's side airbag did not deploy, passenger's side airbag deployed.driver of the vehicle was slightly injured by the seatbelt.

Brake lights remained on without brake pedal pressure, and remained on after turning off ignition.i investigated prior recalls and saw: report receipt date: feb 20, 2007nhtsa campaign number: 07v063000component(s): exterior lighting i went to local vw for recall repair and was told that brake light repair was already performed in 2004, so this repair was no longer covered. ( i am second owner, so could not confirm.)a 2004 repair on a 2005 model year car for a recall issued in 2007?the brake switch replacement cost $176.is this not the same recall failure again?i have had many cars and have never had a single brake light switch fail, except for this vw, which as of today has had three!(original, 2004 replacement and now 2013 replacement.)is the recall still in effect?should i have to pay for an obviously defective part replacement?

2005 passat air conditioner failure, blows cold air intermittently.customer states that it blows cold air intermittently then will stop for no reason and blow ambient temperature air.**nar*the dealer replaced various parts within the ac unit, however the consumer continued to experience ac failure. The consumer believed there was a serious problem with the electrical system or the wiring harness.the consumer stated he replaced two tires due to extreme cupping.

I purchased a new 2005 vw passat and needed to have two of the ignition coils replaced.in both situations, the car suddenly lost power creating a dangerous situation.in addition to losing power, the check engine light starting flashing and i needed to exit the roadway.i disposed of that vehicle and purchased a certified pre-owned 2005 vw passat 4 motion.i have now had to have one of the ignition coils replaced.again i was driving along and the vehicle suddenly lost power and started running very rough.this time i was in an area with very little population and a severe snow storm without cell service.

I went to start my 05 passat and got several error warnings:airbag fault, esp, check engine, absorber intermittent warnings.this occurred because the transmission control module (tcm) got wet from a (known by vw) water leak problem from the sunroof and hvac system.vw has a recall to try and seal the leaks, but will not fix results of the leaks.i am lucky i wasn't going down the road when the tcm malfunctioned.i've researched, and this problem is a recurring one with not only passats, but also golf and jetta models from the late 90s to 2005.a malfunctioning tcm isn't the only electrical component that can be affected by the water leak.the engine control module and climate control module can also get wet and malfunction, causing serious safety issues if this occurs while moving.

I have noted when replacing front headlight bulbs that the plastic covering the headlight wiring was deteriorating on all the wires to the point that the wiring was coming in contact with other deteriorated wiring causing a short and failure of the front headlights. The problem appears to be a failure involving a type of plastic covering the internal headlight wires that attach to the bulbs that may be, or likely be failing due to heat causing premature failure of the headlight wires, the headlight bulbs and burned out headlight fuses due to the shorting out of the headlight wires.

While driving my 2005 vw passat station wagon for about 10 minutes, the check engine light flashed.as i was pulling to the side of the road, the battery light came on.i turned the car off and immediately noticed white smoke coming from the hood of the engine, as well as a brown burn circle.i got myself and my daughter out of the vehicle, and called 911.within 2-3 minutes, the entire engine was engulfed in flames.the firemen informed me that they believe it started with/near the battery.it was considered an electrical fire.the car had not been acting up, nor had the check engine light been coming on in recent weeks or months.the car is a complete loss.the vw passat was only 6 yrs old, with less than 70,000 miles on it.regular tune-ups and maintenance was performed on this vehicle.it was shocking how quickly it went up in flames.

Failure of car to shut engine off when key switched to off.intermittent problem.this problem could have lead to a fire in the event of a crash.problem traced to short in wiring associated with driver's sun visor and 'vanity' lighting. The manufacturer was unable to solve problem.technician found solution by chance.

The interior heater does not work correctly. We took the vehicle to a vw mechanic oasis auto center in redding, ca. He said he cleared the coil but that a valve may also be part of the problem. This occurred in november 2011. Since we live in n. California it has not been a big issue since it is warm most of the year. I did however see this is a recall item. Please advise me if we can still get this repaired under the recall.

Engine oil pump drive failure (tdi engine), causing loss of engine operation including loss of power steering and loss of power brakes.

Low oil pressure do to sludge build up.bought the car as a certified pre-owned vehicle.i bought it around 60k and at 100k i am being told that i need a new engine.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. While driving 25 mph, the engine began to overheat and drain the coolant. The failure occurred multiple times and the contact had to continuously replace the coolant over a couple of weeks. The check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the thermostat and housing needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 85,000.

On 3/23/13, when turning left in traffic, the "sealed for life" 5-spd auto transmission made an incredibly hard shift, began slipping badly, and quickly lost 3 fwd speeds, "limping" in for service.normally, a trans failure at 143k would not prompt an nhtsa complaint.it is not the car, but rather vwoa and its dealer network, that are the problem.my local dealer refused to check auto trans fluid level, and would only grudgingly do a fluid change if i wanted, for an extortionate $700, steadfastly maintaining that neither was necessary.vwoa today 4/5/13, ironically, criticized me for not following the owner's manual recommendation of checking fluid every 40k miles.local dealer wanted over $4400 + misc fees & tax to replace the trans.at the same time, they indicated my new tires with 500 miles on them were in a marginal tread wear condition.ditto the recently renewed (at the same dealer!) rear brakes.btw, the transmission manufacturer, zf,recommends communicating to customers the benefits of fluid changes at 50k mile intervals.vw won't listen to either customer or trans mfr.trans was rebuilt at qualified independent shop.there was also an earlier recall (thanks, nhtsa!) of ceramic glow plugs that would fall into cylinders and cause catastrophic damage.fortunately, i had the repair done independently, as this condition was known for at least 2 yrs before vw's official response. Vw did compensate me for this, but i wonder how many $9k engines were destroyed while vw contemplated its collective navel.btw, after the official vw fix (done at dealer), the car starts in winter like a 1980 rabbit diesel.i fitted a zerostart as corrective measure.vw also refuses to discuss the balance shaft chain drive issue with me.a ticking time bomb at 143k.they know it.i know it. Nhtsa, please take vwoa to task! as for me, i'm now shopping competitors.

Our passat is the tdi (diesel) model. We purchased it used and at around 185,000-190,000 (low miles by diesel engine standards), the vehicle completely shut down while being driven. I lost power steering and brakes. Diagnostics revealed that the chain driven oil pump assembly had malfunctioned. The chain broke and got all up in the engine and oil was no longer being pumped into the engine so the engine was destroyed requiring a complete engine repair. About 16,000 miles later, i was driving and the same exact thing happened. Did some research and found out that this is a very common problem with this model vehicle. Volkswagen has issued an internal technical bulletin telling the service departments how to fix the problem. The fix is changing out the chain driven assembly with a gear driven one. They also never made another model with a chain driven assembly after that model year. So they basically admitted that this is a faulty system yet won't issue a recall. Changing out the assembly is $1500 for the part alone and if you're changing out that part, the chances are good it's because it failed and you now have a destroyed engine as well which is a several thousand dollar job even for a used engine. There is no way to tell when it's going to fail and it's not part of any maintenance schedule. Volkswagen has told me that it's not a common enough problem to issue a recall and yet it's a common enough problem to have to issue a technical bulletin about it. I find it abominable that they know this has and is happening with this vehicle and they are not letting people know about it. Even if they refuse to pay for it to be fixed, the public should be aware that they are driving a ticking time bomb. Someone could get killed if the engine shut down on them while traveling at high speeds on a highway. No power steering. No brakes. It's completely unethical.

Was driving home and the check engine light, stop driving light, low oil pressure light and a buzzer went off.had the vehicle towed to a mechanic and have found that there is no oil pressure.the vehicle with this many miles should never have a problem with no oil pressure. The mechanic tells us that it might be "sludge" or the oil pump is shot.either of which should never happen on any vehicle especially since it has only 89000 miles.this problem is typical with this motor and was recalled up to the model years 2004. The 1.8 l turbo motor is and always has been a terrible motor for this and just because they have not received a lot of complaints on this particular year does not mean that there is no problem.one only has to search on line to see that their is and has been an ongoing problem.vw of america has acknowledged the recall and their culpability up to 2004, in an email to me, but because of our newer vin has denied coverage.

Vehicle engine made unusual noise and stopped running.steering and brakes became very difficult. Could not restart engine and heard loud banging from engine when starter was turning engine. Had to have vehicle pushed out of roadway. Inspection of engine revealed that the crankshaft had broken.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated.the contact steered the vehicle to the side of the road and had it towed to a mechanic.the failure was diagnosed as engine oil sludge.the vehicle was not repaired.the manufacturer was notified.the vin was unavailable.the approximate failure mileage was 143,000.

I have recently come to the need of having to replace a critical part of the engine oil system in my 2005 passat tdi.for various reasons, not the least of which is an inferior design, the balance shaft assembly on this particular engine (2004-2005 model years) will cause oil flow to the engine to cease, disrupting safe travel of the car immediately, regardless of the speed of travel.this failure is exceptionally dangerous at highway speeds of 70+ mph.if this failure were to occur at highway speed, the driver would notice a sudden deceleration and a need to move to the shoulder abruptly.not only would this endanger the driver and occupants of said vehicle, but other drivers on the roadway as well.volkswagen has yet to issue a statement, recall or warning to owners of this particular vehicle, nor is it mentioned anywhere in the owner's manual as part of a vehicle maintenance program.

Oil pump failure leading to engine falue. Requiring engine replacement.

2.0l vw passat tdi had a rattling, vibrating chain noise from the oil pump balance shaft module in the oil pan. The oil pump chains/sprockets/tensioners were worn and caused noticeable vibration and rattling noise for thousands of miles; however, it was difficult to diagnose. We had the entire oil pump assembly replaced by a vw dealership at approximately 120,000 miles with oem gear driven pump which includes the balance shafts and oil pump. It was a $3700 repair to exchange the original oil pump with the gear driven pump.not a cheap service. The sound before and after the module change was much improved because the gears are quieter. The replacement gear driven oil pump/balance shaft assembly uses a similar balance shaft but with a different oil pump and gear drive.the gear drive smoothes out stress on the oil pump hex shaft so runs much better.in summary, i am not happy with having to do such an expensive repair due to a poor design at the low mileage of 120,000 for a diesel that should last to at least 400,000 miles.this is a recurring expensive problem that should be reimbursed by vw.

Numerous reports of vw bhw diesel engine oil balance shaft / chain failure are reported. Volkswagen of america refuses to acknowledge any responsibility for repair despite the fact that vw has recognized the issue and changed the design. Failure of the balance shaft / chain results in immediate lack of power creating a potential life safety hazard. Vw of canada has acknowledged responsibility in some documented cases. Vw of america should be compelled by government authorities to resolve the matter on behalf of us citizens.i am having the repair done proactively to prevent any serious safety issue but vw should step up and reimburse those of us who have paid for the expensive repair on our own.

The contact owns a 2005 vw passat. While driving 30 mph, the low pressure warning light illuminated on the instrument panel; which instructed her to discontinue operation.it the contact chose to continue operating the vehicle engine failure could have occurred. The vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection. A technician replaced the turbo along with the oil and pick-tube; to avoid oil from entering into the inner cooler. The current and failure mileages were 62,000. Updated 10/21/09 updated 10/20/09

The tdi (diesel) engine in the '04 & '05north american volkswagen passats was equipped with a chain driven oil pump/balance shaft module. The chain tensioner fails causing the chain to separate which stops the oil pump and destroys the engine. If a person is lucky, like i was, and hears the chain noise before it fails, the engine can be saved. The fix involves installing a new gear driven balance shaft module which contains a new oil pump. The repairs costs ~ $2,500 parts and labor. Volkswagen has ignored this fault in the us (and canada), denying the problem exists, even though hundreds of cases of failure have been documented. In fact, the new design modules are currently on back order at the vw parts factory. The oil pump chain drive problem is without a doubt a defect. The fact that vw re-engineered and replaced the original oil pump drive assembly is an admission that the design was defective. Reference vw's technical product information no. 2016429/2 dated 29-jan-2008. I see this as a huge safety concern. I can only imagine what would happen if one of these chains failed, on the highway during freeway rush hour traffic, causing the engine to destroy itself and spill oil and other fluids onto the road surface. Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information.

My 2005 passat tdi was leaking a huge amount of oil so i topped off the oil and took it to the mechanic. He showed me a huge gash in the oil pan, resulting in the leak. When we took the pan off the oil pump chain tensioner and chain came out in pieces. The tensioner broke and slammed the chain into the oil pan, making the gouge. We replaced the oil pan, chain, tensioner, and completed an early timing belt change including a water pump. This was around $2000 total. After some research i found out this is likely due to a problem with the balance shaft module / chain driven oil pump setup on these cars. I found out that even though i spent $2000 fixing this i may need to complete the same repairs again or replace the balance shaft module which would be several thousand dollars. I also discovered that vw has upgraded the design of the balance shaft/oil pump drive so obviously they know this is a problem. I've read that i was rather lucky, it is entirely possible that i could have suffered a catastrophic loss of oil pressure and had the engine seize up, which could be deadly. I'm basically just afraid to drive my car now.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact heard a clattering sound coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance where the mechanic advised that the chain drive assembly for the oil pump would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 96,500.

Engine noise, rattle, oil light.engine (turbo diesel // passat) does not seem normal and much noisier than usual.other fiends with tdi's have had major concerns with their cars (same circumstances).

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving 30 mph. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for a diagnosis. The dealer stated that they had to replace the engine. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was contacted stated that they were not responsible for the repairs because the vehicle was not under recall. The failure and current mileages were 125,000. The vin was not available.

I have not had failure yet, but there are several individuals who own the same exact car i own, a 2005 vw passat tdi.there is an ongoing concern at several news groups including www.tdiclub.com and other diesel enthusiast newsgroups about the oil pump chain unit that is in the vw bhw 2.0 turbodiesel engine.many of these cars when they get out of warranty at 60k will start to have engine noise which is indicative of the oil pump chain unit chain weakening.this condition leads to complete failure without general warning.this is a disaster awaiting to happen.vw in europe has developed a fix for this engine that involves installing a gear system instead of the chain and tensioner system for the engine balancing system. There are several episodes of people having the engines fail while on the road.i am concerned as an owner of this particular engine vw passat.there were about 12 thousand of these imported into the usa.i know of at least four individuals who have had this situation happen to them and their passat.the repairs are not cheap in the neighborhood of $3000 at a bare minimum with up to 9 thousand for a new motor, even despite owners using the proper specified motor oil.

Nvs-216 mec and ref. # is 10257848 vw 2005 passat tdi balance shaft replacementthis was a very expensive repair($3200)ot avoid a catastrophic failure of the engine at any speed that could result in total lose of control.this is a design flaw by vw and should be replace at their cost!

There is a problem with the bhw engine in my 2005 passat tdi the balance shafts in this engine are driven by a chain off the motor, which also drives the oil pump. This unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it cannot withstand. On various tdi forums, especially tdiclub.com, there are a significant number of chain failures being reported. Of course, when the chain driving the oil pump fails, the engine is starved of essential lubrication.if the failure of the chain causes engine to stop running in the middle of traffic, merging onto a highway, or passing on the highway, this condition could easily cause danger to all citizens nearby, possibly leading to death.recently, volkswagen in europe recognized the problem and designed a repair, which changes the chain driven oil pump to a gear driven oil pump. This appears to be a permanent fix to the original design defect. The repair is quite expensive. When the chain fails, the parts to repair cost approximately $1800 plus approximately another $1500 in labor bills to have the parts installed.if the engine is destroyed, it will cost the owner approximately $8000 to replace the engine. This is unacceptable. I believe it is now obvious that all the bhw engines will fail unless the gear driven oil pump modification is undertaken. It is unfair to expect owners of these vehicles to pay for the repairs. The problem originated with a flawed design. This is not a small problem, as this design flaw will lead to total engine failure. My vehicle is currently experiencing severe noise oscillations that is attributed to imminent failure of the aforementioned chain assembly. Thus, i must pay to repair this design flaw before it can cause an accident.so far, volkswagen of america has not provided adequate support for resolving this design problem.

I've had to get my 2005 passat fixed 3 times for engine sludge issues and it's happening to it again.it has cost me nearly $4000 and counting.

I have a 2005 passat tdi that had its balance shaft module and chain that drive the oil pump fail at 92,000 miles.it happened while i was driving on a two lane road and i had to stop the car on the side of the road. The mechanic that is doing the job is charging me $1500 for the repair and the parts are about $1300.i have started to research this failure and have found out that it is quite common and vw has not done a recall to repair the problemthe nhtsa should look into this and force vw to recall these cars for they are a safety hazard on the road.

The balance shafts in this engine are driven by a hex shaft off the chain driven oil pump. This unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it cannot withstand. My own passat had the oil pump and balance shaft replaced 2/16/09 with less than 65,000 miles. Thankfully, a good mechanic detected the problem before i had a catastrophic engine failure. A $3,500 repair is never welcome, but it was better than replacing the engine like the vw dealer recommended. I did a lot of research on this problem and inquired at several vw dealerships and chose the most experienced man to do the job.recently, volkswagen in europe recognized the problem and designed a repair which changes the chain driven oil pump to a gear driven oil pump. This appears to be a permanent fix to the original design defect. The repair is quite expensive. Parts will cost in excess of $1,400 and labor will be in excess of $1,200 at most shops.i believe it is now obvious that all the bhw engines will fail unless the gear driven oil pump modification is undertaken. It is unfair to expect owners of these vehicles to pay for the repairs. The problem originated with a flawed design. This is not a small problem, as this design flaw will lead to total engine failure. My wife normally drives the car and she should not be put through this. If the failure of the chain causes engine to stop running in the middle of traffic, merging onto a highway, or passing on the highway, this condition could easily cause danger to all citizens nearby, possibly leading to death.i would like to know what steps volkswagen of america is taking to inform 2004 and 2005 passat tdi owners of this problem. Good corporate citizenship would recognize a problem of this severity and should be communicated to the owners as soon as possible. These engine failures could leave motorists stranded under dire circumstances and their safety is at risk.

I own a 2005 passat tdi gls.my car had developed a very serious noise caused by the oil pump chain unit that was originally on this vehicle. I did talk to vw and my dealer service department about the thrashing chain noise.i got polite denials and blank stares when i told them of this issue.members of the www.tdiclub.com discovered a vw engineered fix for the vehicles involved.members who have driven their cars beyond the 80k or so seem more likely to have the chain snap during operation which renders the car inoperative and dangerous during the breakage.the fix is not exactly an inexpensive repair as the parts alone are around $1500 and the installation requires extensive disassembly of the vehicle. The repair involves replacing the chain driven oil pump balance shaft assembly with a gear driven assembly.the below link has videos/sound clips of my car before the noise, after the noise and after the fix.this was taken with 44,444 miles on the clock:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0wmgcdjfqithis the car prior to balance shaft repair in may 2009 with 56,000 miles on the clock:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttqx3sj6_fkthis is a post-op recording june 2009 at 57,000 miles of my passat after brian johnston of cardocautomotive in st. I currently lease a 2005 vw passat. Warranty offered: 5 yr/ 50,000 mile. Approx. Nov 7, 2008 vehicle dashboard began to register "stop oil press low". Immediately pulled into closest gas station and purchased a synthetic oil for vw thinking this would solve the problem. On nov 17, 2008 dashboard lit up again with same message and immediately brought vehicle into vista vw, pompano bch, florida. Was instructed that issue was possibly due to faulty oil pressure dip stick cylinder and need of oil change. (cylinder replaced and oil change completed) prior oil change was completed at vista vw pompano beach. Vw mechanic placed a clear oil change maint. Sticker with incorrect mileagedue at next oil change. Oil change should have occurred at 38,000 miles vs. 45,000. Vista vw stated i would need to pay for a diagnostic test to be completed (approx $166.00) as well as an hourly charge for labor (approx. $110 p/hr) not including any and all repair to be paid for upon completion. This due to warranty expired. Brought vehicle in at 792 miles over 50,000. Due to the expense that i would have incurred it was not feasible for me to go ahead and perform this diagnostic test hence causing me to leave no further choice but to decline service. I attempted to trade my passat in early and release a new vehicle and was unsuccessful in doing so.approximately 1 month later i was at gunther vw coconut creek and informed finance mgr that i now have an engine light on. I was told to try and drive the vehicle back home and see if the light goes out. That maybe it's a faulty sensor. Upon arrival at my residence the vehicle completely shut down and engine failed.the following day i had the vehicle towed to a mechanic. My mechanic stated that the approx. Cost for repair would be anywhere between $8,000 - $10,000. I immediately began research and found there is a lawsuit from the consumers of vw passats in regard to this exact same mechanical issue & vw will not comply with this issue.

I have leased a 2005 vw passat. I changed my oil on a regular basis, my mechanic did not write the in mileage or out mileage when he gave me my receipt. My car broke down on the highway and vw states that i need a new motor due to sludge in the motor. The are telling me my receipts are not good enough and won't cover the motor.i have searched the web and see i'm not the only one with this problem. The palisades, ny vw are impossible to do business with. I'm not getting a new motor!

I have a 2005 vw passat gls with approx 135,000 miles. I took it in to get "winterized", oil change and clear the engine light (whatever the misfire was for), and a factory recall on the engine coils. Got all that done (plus serpentine belt replaced) and was told that the engine light should be ok, if it comes back on...to let them know asap. A day and 1/2 later, the light came back on, and this time, there was barely any heat on in the car. Took it back...they stated that the coils needed to be replaced (again) and that there was an oil leak going into the coils & the fuel injectors, and that the heater core needed to be replaced. I had the coils and the 2 "faulty" injectors replaced. I got frustrated with this dealer and went to another vw deal, for their evaluation. They said that they didn't know how i could've been told that the heater core was bad, when there was so many other things wrong before they even got to the heater core!! and they gave me 3 options: either pay for each service separately, get a new/used engine or see what i can get for this car and trade it in (not happy @ all). I called vw of a to see if there were any recalls or complaints about the heater core, since it was causing more damage that originally thought, but they nicely "documented" it and sent me a loyalty voucher if i were to get another vw. I am pissed. I know i have alot of mileage, but this is major, major damage and expenses to be put out for this car!!! vw needs to get it together. I loved my passat until this point.

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat tdi. The contact stated that at engine startup, a noise was heard from under the hood. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the mechanic stated to the contact that the oil pump chain was loose. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 108,500 and the current mileage was 109,000. Kmj

I was driving on highway when the alarm message "oil pressure low: stop engine" came on. I got off the side of the road and the engine locked up. Bent valves, broken piston shaft, engine needs replaced. I've seen this so many times on the internet as i've been looking into my options since then. Volkswagen will do nothing to help nor take responsibility. They offered me $1000 toward a new volkswagen. Seriously? i have maintained the vehicle. They know there is a problem with these cars and as far as i'm concerned, it is criminal to sell these without recalling to fix the problem. If i wasn't able to get off the highway, outside of chicago, my passenger and i would have been smashed with countless other injuries. I didn't stop the car once i got off the road, it stopped itself. Volkswagen needs to be accountable for their products.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat.while the vehicle is idling, the engine makes a chain rattling noise.the failure has not been diagnosed.the current mileage was 48,000 and failure mileage was 43,000.

This reference a very specific vehicle, i.e. Namelythe 2005-2005 vw passat tdi (diesel) car, both sedan and station wagon version, with the vw bhw engine. What started out as an occasional need to replace the chain that drive the oil pump, became a certainty that the chain would break.if the chain breaks, you loose oil pressure immediate, and the engine is going to seize (not to mention the chain itself flopping around in the crank areawhich could lodge in the drive system and do the same). In any situation where you are accelerating, that is going to be catastrophic , and certainlyany higher speed on a freeway/highway being the same) vw has recognized the issue and has now issued a tsb on the problem, but has not instituteda recall.the change is to remove the chain drive system and convert the engine to a gear driven oil pump. This is extremely expensive.what this does to the counter balancer shaft is unknown (i.e. What caused what to fail has not had any indication from vw).ww should immediately be mandated to recall all these vehicles with the tdi bhw engine and or issue a recall notice that the vehicle should be brought in before the 100k timing belt change interval listed in the manual and have that tsb changed to a recall and safety repair. Any owner hearing the signatory noise of the failure developingshould have that repaired immediately, but it should be replaced not latter than the 100k point.this is based on a survey of a few at 40 to 60k,most have it developingby 100k (if not failed or close to failure at that point.all othervw diesel engine use a gear driven oil pump system.

I was driving on the highway with my 2 years old son, and out of no where the car stop and as soon as stop one of the message from my car was stop cooling engine, that was the four time thatlight appears on my car, i been talking the car to the mechanic for that problem but they told me it is a defect i already spent more than $3,000.00 on my car and is not working, my car is a wv passat 2005.

At 60,025 miles and traveling at 65mph my 2005 vw passat lost power and began to sputter.i was barely able to make it to a repair shop where i was told the ignition coils needed to be replaced at a cost of $500+.

Imminent failure of major engine component due to poor vw design. This involves the oil pump drive chain mechanism that should be replaced with vws new gear drive via a recall. Broken chain drives are piling up yet vw refuses to acknowledge the potential harm and damage that could occur. Visit http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=233651 for details.

Excessive and increased rattling noise noticed on my 2005 passat tdi.evaluation revealed that the chain and tensioner driving the balance shafts and oil pump was failing and needed replacement.service technician states that this is a common problem and vw has issued a gear drive to replace the chain, however there is no recall or tsb therefore the cost of the repair is the owner's responsibility.over $2000 to repair.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 35 mph uphill, there was popping noise followed by a loss of all power.after the initial engine stall, the engine was restarted, but stalled again.the vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection.the dealer determined there was a failed connection of the inter-cooler hose and pressurized hose that connects to the turbo charger.the dealer replaced the hose fittings on the turbo charger. Updated 6/27/2006 - the consumer feels that the hose connection mechanism wasn't sufficient to support the high pressure created by the turbo.

Balance shaft module, which drives the oil pump, has a chain drive.this drive was getting very noisy.if the chain were to fail the engine would loose all oil pressure.i had a shop replace the balance shaft assembly, which includes the oil pump, with the new and improved geared balance shaft module.(old part is no longer available).

2005 volkswagen passat developed problems with stalling.*mrthe consumer was told by the dealer, the engine was damaged.

Excessive noise from oil pump, chain unit, and chain(and possibly balance shaft) due to original equipment design. I believe a failure is imminent and within 100 miles.failure of the balance shaft assembly and the engine oil pump system drive can lead to catastrophic engine failure with loss of oil pressure, broken oil pan, broken front engine seal flange, and damaged crankshaft. This can result in damage to the extent that the engine must be replaced. If this occurs while the vehicle is in traffic, it can lead to a collision with injuries or deaths.my vehicle is still under warranty, however, it is unclear that the extensive parts and labor to repair will be corrected by vw dealer due to the limited number of vehicles such as this in north america.

Loud noise in the lower half of engine prompted evaluation by mechanic.problem was from failure of chain driven balance module.this failure was due to faulty design that vw has admitted to by virtue of no longer manufacturing this unit and replacing it with a totally re-engineered balance shaft module that is gear driven.complete failure of this unit while operating the vehicle could result in a collision that potentially could be fatal.vw refuses to be responsible and admit their error in design to the public, hoping to avoid a costly recall campaign.in the meantime vw owners are having to pay $2500 to $3000 for this repair.atthe same time this is a recognized problem with the same engines in europe and vw has re-engineered the parts for north america for replacement.vw needs to be held responsible for this design failure and the affected engines in north america need to be repaired at vw's expense before someone gets killed.

Vehicle affected is a 2004-2005 volkswagen passat tdi equipped with a 2.0l diesel engine. Codedbhw. The oil pump balance shaft module and chain are week in design and are failing without any warning to the driver. When this failure occur the engine is starved of oil and internal failure is imminent. Safety of operation becomes compromised at this point since an engine failure at highway speeds removes all power steering and braking features and the driver is along for the ride until getting the vehicle to a stop by use of e-brake or other speed reducing maneuvers and hopefully avoiding a collision. This failure is being reported at a broad range of mileage starting with 45,000 and up. Its main sign is a loud chain rattle or abnormal vibration while at idle. Volkswagen has issued an upgraded part but no further guidance was issued. There are no recalls or warranty repairs as of right now. All owners are upgrading there vehicles with a gear driven assembly at a price tag for the repair of $3000.

Design flaw of 2004-2005 passat tdi vehicles sold in usa and canada involving the balance shaft module and its chain driven oil pump design. The chain has been reported to fail with no warning. Vw has issued new design to replace the old but has not commenced and recall as of yet.

2005 vw passat tdi had a loud noise coming from the engine like marbles in a blender.the car also shook violently.it got progressively worse over time until it was unbearable.the noise and vibrations were constant - whenever the car was running.i finally took the car into the shop and it turns out the timing chain that drives the oil pump and balance module was bad.the shop had to replace the entire oil pump and balance module due to a redesign from vw.the new design is now gear driven.the old parts are available at the shop that did the replacement.it looks like vw did upgrade the parts back in the early part of 2008 but they have not notified their customer base nor have they issued any recall.if the chain were to break there would be oil starvation to the engine because the chain drives the oil pump.this could lead to catastrophic damage and also life threatening injuries if this were to happen while the vehicle was in motion.i'm very lucky that i repaired my car when i did.total cost for the repair was around $2400.00.

The balance shafts in this engine (2005 vw b5 passat tdi) are driven by a chain off the motor which also drives the oil pump. This unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it cannot withstand. Ours let go at speed with my family of five on board. Fortunately no one was injured at the sudden deceleration in traffic. A fix has been mandated in the ecu but not in the us.there is no current official "fix" from vw america. The expectation is the engine will self destruct and the customer will be required to purchase an entire $5000-8000 motor with a replacement gear assembly.volkswagen technical product information 016429.

I have not had failure yet, but there are several individuals who own the same exact car i own, a 2005 vw passat tdi. There is an ongoing concern at several news groups including www.tdiclub.com and other diesel enthusiast newsgroups about the oil pump chain unit that is in the vw bhw 2.0 turbodiesel engine. Many of these cars when they get out of warranty at 60k will start to have engine noise which is indicative of the oil pump chain unit chain weakening. This condition leads to complete failure without general warning. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Vw in europe has developed a fix for this engine that involves installing a gear system instead of the chain and tensioner system for the engine balancing system. There are several episodes of people having the engines fail while on the road. I am concerned as an owner of this particular engine vw passat. There were about 12 thousand of these imported into the usa. I know of at least four individuals who have had this situation happen to them and their passat. The repairs are not cheap in the neighborhood of $3000 at a bare minimum with up to 9 thousand for a new motor, even despite owners using the proper specified motor oil.

My vw passat wagon gls tdi (diesel) engine has been making a loud noise and vibration at stop over the last year and worsened until i had it repaired. I took it to an independent auto shop and was told the chain driven oil pump and tensioners were making the noise. The brilliant mechanic replaced the parts with a gear driven oil pump and the vibrations and noise stopped. I think this is a design flaw and should be recalled by vw. The mechanic said that the oil pump chain tensioners were close to breaking.

Vw of america should be compelled by government authorities to resolve the matter on behalf of us citizens.

I am an owner of a 2005 passat tdi gls wagon with 58,000 miles on it.i am writingto seek help in getting volkswagen of america to recognize there is an inherent problem with the engine's balance shaft assembly.i am a tdiclub.com forum member, which has participants that are career mechanics who work on tdis specifically. Through their experience they noted this problem will sooner or later affect the some 20,000 2004-2005 passat tdi's with the bhw engine code.the balance shafts in this engine are driven by a hex shaft off the chain driven oil pump. This unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it cannot withstand. On various volkswagen (vw) forums, especially tdiclub.com, there are a significant number of chain failures being reported. Of course, when the chain driving the oil pump fails, the engine is starved of essential lubrication.recently, volkswagen in europe recognized the problem and designed a repair which changes the chain driven oil pump to a gear driven oil pump. This appears to be a permanent fix to the original design defect.here in the states, you can no longer order the original chain pieces as a replacement.the repair is quite expensive. Parts will cost in excess of $1,400 and labor will be in excess of $1,500. I believe it is now obvious that all the bhw engines will fail unless the gear driven oil pump/balance shaft modification is undertaken.our own passat has been getting a bit louder this past year which is the first sign of this imminent failure.it is unfair to expect owners of these vehicles to pay for the repairs. The problem originated with a flawed design which will lead to total engine failure.this could lead to a serious accident if the failure happens while the car is on the road.the nhtsa cannot let this happen to american owners.volkswagen of america has to recognize and inform the passat tdi owners of this problem, and help to rectify the situation to the satisfaction of their loyal owners.

August 2007 i got an oil change from the 10 minute oil change place in north arlington, nj.the first week of october my engine seized due to sludge.i always get my oil changed on a regular basis (3,000 miles) not the suggest 5,000 in my car manual.the 10 minute oil change place does not have a computer system to produce records and unfortunately i have only one receipt from the august 2007 oil change.so i went through all my old charge card receipts and debit receipts from my bank to prove that i did get my oil changed.however gensinger volkswagen in clifton, nj and volkswagen of america the corporate office said that my receipts were not "proof enough" that it was my car even though some of my receipts had the oil change place twice in one month which proves that i got an oil change & my husband got an oil change.so since october 2007 my car has been undriveable and has sat in my driveway ever since.i have continued paying for my lease and my insurance on this car even though my car is undriveable.this 2005 passat has only 25,500 miles on it and this engine should have never seized.volkswagen passats are known for heavy sludge in their engines and yet this company does nothing about it!i now have to pay for a new engine before i turn this leased car back.please do something about this awful company.

Eventual failure of chain driven oil pump and balance shafts, resulting in a sudden loss of power and destruction of the engine, leading to a potential life/safety situation in this 2005 passat tdi. This method of driving the oil pump and balance shafts is a volkswagen acknowledged engineering flaw as noted in technical product information bulletin 2016429/2. Not wishing to replace an engine that as a result of said failure, might potentially place myself and passengers in a life threatening situation, i have proactively changed out the chain-driven oil pump/balance shaft module for a gear driven assembly at a cost to myself of $3000. I believe vw needs to step up and issue a recall for this model.

I own a 2005 vw passat gls tdi sedan diesel and the oil pump balance shaft assembly including oil pump drive chain, tensioner, and sprocket are bad and making a horrendous noise. The vehicle has just over 60,000 miles but, is out of factory warranty. The vw dealer the vehicle was taken to has no idea of such a problem. My research has proven otherwise. It is said that if such a failure occurred at highway speeds, disaster could result. Apparently, there is a fix for this issue which entails the removal of the whole oil pump chain drive assembly and replacing it with a gear driven assembly. I feel this should be considered a factory defect and safety issue to where vwissues an immediate service bulletin followed by a mandatory recall campaign.

Oil sludge, oil pump failure, engine failure, now my 2005 vw passat needs a new engine , this is a vw manufacturing defect in the 4 cylinder 1.8 turbo engine because the turbocharger gets to hot and cause the expensive synthetic oil breakdown and it sits in the bottom of the oil pan until it gets sucked up by the oil pump and this causes your engine to fail.

Ltr from senator murkowski on behalf of constituent who has concerns re the safety of the 2005 vw passat tdi station wagon. *njthe consumer stated there is a design issue with the engine. The consumer stated vw used an unusual combination of a chain driven oil pump (normally gear drive) and associated with that a counter balancer to reduce vibration in the diesel engine. The oil chain is prone to failure, and the balancer shaft is not a tight enough fit. The consumer stated the repair is costly and there is no real fix for the issue.

The vehicle was in for repairs at 42k miles, while under the warranty in 2004.there was an oil leak and the car was running rough.they stated they replaced a flange that was cracked, the oil pump/balance shaft sprocket, chain tensioner.when i got the car back it wasn't running right, very, very rough and loud (it's a diesel but used to be quiet).it turns out they did not balance the balance shaft with the engine, they ordered the part/tool to do this. Nearly 1k miles later, after they told me it was safe to drive, they called me to come in and have it balanced, which i did.at 65k miles, roughly 9-10 months after this initial repair, the chain snapped for the oil pump.the sprocket on the oil pump that they replaced along with the chain tensioner were destroyed.the sprocket had old and new wear, the chain tensioner ended up in pieces, and the chain should have been replaced the initial time but was not.the chain snapped.the original flange that was leaking was also leaking again.this catastrophe led to the crankshaft needing to be replaced as well as the turbo which was immediately starved for oil and burned up too.the engine was rebuilt (bottom end), turbo replaced, new crank, and currently it still cannot be driven due to electrical or mechanical problems associated with the repair and failure.vw of america stated the parts they replaced did not fail, and if they did they only have a 12mo/12k mile warranty on them.the warranty for the car was up at 50k miles. There are numerous complaints on the forums and message boards in regards to the balance shaft and components (chain, tensioner, shaft, hex shaft, sprocket) being faulty or failing.many are having problems shortly after the warranty is up.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that she could hear a chain noise while driving at any speed. After a year, the noise became louder. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the balance chain would break soon. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000 and the current mileage was approximately 117,000. Updated01/24/11 updated 04/14/11

On november 4,2005, around 7:30 pm while a i was driving my car from new jersey to new york city, a new jersey transit authority bus dangerously cut in front of my car. My wife was accompanying me. As i stopped to avoid the bus, the bus made a sudden and full stop about 15 feet in front of me. Instinctively, i put the car gear in neutral. All of the sudden my car engine started accelerating at a very high speed without touching any pedal. I pushed the brake pedal to see if the acceleration would stop. When i released the brake pedal , the car started running toward the stationary bus, despite the fact that the car gear was in the neutral position. As a result, my car moved forward and hit the back of the bus. The bus driver got out and asked if we were ok. She said she was fine and were no passengers in the bus. We were all right too. There were no policemen to make a report. The bus get a minimal damage. My car was mostly damage on the front side of the driver's side, but was drivable. About two weeks prior to the accident, i was driving the same car on the new jersey turnpike and experience the same sudden acceleration of the car engine. After a few seconds, the car continued running normally. In view of the serious events with this 2005 passat which has only around 10,000 miles, i conclude that this vehicle is prone to faulty performance and is dangerous and unpredictable on the road. I particularly blame volkswagen of america as the direct responsible party for the accident that occurred on 11-04-05, around 7:30 pm, near the lincoln tunnel , on the new jersey side, when a clear malfunction of the 2005 passat that i leased from volkswagen, provoked an accident that could have been avoided and that might have been more serious.

I have noted when replacing front headlight bulbs that the plastic covering the headlight wiring was deteriorating on all the wires to the point that the wiring was coming in contact with other deteriorated wiring causing a short and failure of the front headlights. The problem appears to be a failure involving a type of plastic covering the internal headlight wires that attach to the bulbs that may be, or likely be failing due to heat causing premature failure of the headlight wires, the headlight bulbs and burned out headlight fuses due to the shorting out of the headlight wires.

Brake light switch: my brake lights stay on when my foot is not on the brake.this leaves the potential for an accident.i called my dealer and they told me my car was not covered under the current recall. I looked at this web site and it describes the very same symptoms that my car is exhibiting.

2005 vw passat with recall for a brake light switch. Consumer took the car overseas. He states that they will not honor the international warranty for the brake light switch.the dealer stated they were not having the problem in europe.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that the interior of the headlight lenses became foggy. An unknown product was purchased to prevent the headlights from clouding but to no avail. The manufacturer stated that the occurrence was normal based on the age of the lens and environmental elements. The contact confirmed that he previously owned an older model volkswagen passat and experienced the exact same failure. There were no repairs made to the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 45,000.

The failure is with (1) the balance shaft oil pump chain drive system on the vw passat 2.0 tdi diesel automobile.the failure has occurred numerous time to other vw owners and present an imminent threat to vehicle safety should such failure occur in heavy traffic.(2) ceramic glow plugs for the tdi diesel engine have a tendency to break off and cause catastrophic damage to a running engine.both defects have been recognized by vwoa as evidenced by upgrades made to their european customers.however vwoa is totally ignoring the american customers and resulting in exorbitant repair prices.vw continues to violate epa rule by not releasing ecu reflash data to non vw service facilities, here again capitalizing on a known design flaw.let it be know that only the symptoms of these impending failures have occurred at this point in time.judging from reports of others who have suffered already this vehicle is in immanent danger.

Diesel fuel fill back pressure overflow. 2005 vw passat tdi.

I have a 2005 vw passat tdi which has rusting around the inside of the fuel tank.my dealer plus vw refuse to replace as they say it's not a warranty issue.i feel it must be a manufacturer defect.i'm afraid the rusty liquid will harm my engine in time.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat gls tdi. The engine began to rattle violently immediately after the vehicle was started. The noise sounded like marbles rolling around in the engine compartment. The noise was louder during start up and while driving lower speeds. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for the failure who replaced the glow plugs and fuel filters; however, the failure continued. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic and who advised him that the balance shaft assembly needed to be replaced with a redesigned balance shaft assembly. The vehicle wasnot repaired. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 70,000.

While i was driving home from work on the highway my 2005 passat (1.8t)suddenly shut off.fortunately, i was able to move quickly to the break down lane to get out of the way of the cars behind me.the passat was towed to thedealer where they discover the fuel pump had failed.so then i paid the dealer replaced the fuel pump, since there are no recalls for the 2005 model (only 2003).

I was driving across connecticut on friday june 27 2014 on i-84 (danbury to mass pike), traveling from philadelphia to boston.after passing through hartford the road expands from 2 -3 lanes to 8, i was in lane 4.the road was going to split going 84 east and 383 se.84 was still 8 lanes when my car completely died - no gas was getting to the engine.i had semi tractor trailer very close behind me, the time was 5:30 - rush hour, everyone was speeding, and i was shut down in lane 4.at this point, thankfully and miraculously, the 2 highways split and it was all i could do but fall into the newly created breakdown lane; otherwise i don't see how i could have walked away from the road.there was no, none, no warning that the car was going to die, no lights, no shaking, no alarm.i called the state police to get me off the highway.as it was friday evening, aaa could only tow me to a pep boys and as it was 7 pm by this time, i had to spend the night in a residence 6 in manchester cn.pep boys looked at the car the next day and determined that no fuel was getting to the engine; i would need a new fuel pump. Also, for no other reason that it was interesting, apparently a 2004 all-wheel drive pump had been put on my (new) 2005 front-wheel drive car.i am told this is not unusual.they eventually found a pump and installed it, i left for maine around 1 pm that day.i had my car in my local shop before leaving on this trip, as is always done, and was deemed safe to drive.i have since call vw and they say that they have no real explanation for the pump dying other than this happens.i appreciate that equipment needs to be replaced and car parts maintained.it is outrageous that not to have provision to give warning to your car about to go into complete failure is acceptable by anyone.how many people have to be put in danger before this changes?

I completely filled the fuel tank of my car in the morning on 4/22/2019. I then drove home and parked the car in my driveway (so it was stationary at this time). That afternoon i smelled a strong odor of gasoline and saw a puddle on the ground underneath the car by the driver's side rear wheel. I thought that maybe i overfilled the fuel tank so i waitedto see if the issue would go away after i drove a bit. On 4/23/2019 i still smelled gasoline and saw a puddle under the car after parking. I determined the fuel was only leaking while the car was in motion and it became apparent there was a larger issue. On 4/24/2019 i took the car to a mechanic to diagnosis where the leak was coming from. The mechanic could smell gas and found fuel residue, but nothing fresh. It was recommended that i fill the fuel tank and return to see if a leak could be found. So on 4/26/2019 i completely filled the fuel tank and returned to the mechanic. And they found that fuel is leaking from the seam of the fuel tank.

My 2005 passat is leaking gas, location is close to the rear passenger side. I called local vw dealer (where i purchased car from ) along with vw 800 number- both told me there was no recall.i took the vehicle to my local repair place woodys in ankeny, iowa.the mechanic called me back to tell me that he did believe there was a recall 26e5-r5.i called back vw and he told me that indeed there was a prior recall however the mechanics fixed the car prior and would not fix it again. He told me that i need to have the car towed to the local vw mechanic, pay for the tow, pay for the diagnostic screening to determine if there is a true gas leak similar to the one that was recalled/fixed, then vw would possibly consider covering the charges.i'm left paying for 2 tows now (one to the place its at since they told me in the first place it wasn't covered) and then a tow to vw, plus the diagnostic appointment, and possibly the entire cost to fix it, if vw decides they don't want to cover the cost again. There was a recall, the recall obviously was supposed to be fixed and they did a poor job, my car is leaking fuel out of it (raw fuel) and smells horrible, and they want me to 'check' to see if there is an issue and possibly pay to fix it. This doesn't seem right.

Driving home from work and smell gas comeing from vent inside cab next day drove it again and still smell gas even on outside of driverside.

2005 vw passat wagon, 4 motion, 128,000 miles, w/ intense odor of gas in the cabin of the car; after driving 15 miles to work, i developed a headache and illness symptoms which lasted for 2 -3 days. Car was towed to local vw dealer.i contacted vw of america, who agreed to diagnostics. Large fuel tank fracture confirmed. After many discussions with customer service at vw of america, they refused to cover repairs, though they did confirm that this failure was the same failure which had led to a previous recall campaign of the fuel tank/system, but since my car had already been repaired (2015) w/ a superseded part and it was past the 12 month warranty period, i did not qualify, nor would they offer goodwill service. They did acknowledge, however, that it was a serious safety issue and the car should not be driven.i verbalized in many conversations the safety concern this posed not only for myself and my family but for others who had the potential to face the same situation.i asked what process vw had for documenting and reporting these consumer safety concerns of such a serious nature and was told that it is reported internally but there was no one i could speak with to discuss further any aspect of the case, nor would vw report this to nhtsa, as it had been reported under the previous campaign.i feel very strongly that this repeated failure should be reported and therefore am documenting here.the car has now been towed to my home where it sits in my driveway d/t the fumes being at a toxic level when the car is in the closed garage.the cabin of the car also remains with a high level of gas fumes.i have asked for written documentation from vw of america related to my case, but as of yet have not been provided with such.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. Upon starting the vehicle or driving various speeds, the contact noticed a fuel odor inside the vehicle. In addition, the check engine and anti-slip regulator warning indicators illuminated. The contact called momentum volkswagen of clear lake at (844) 894-5461 (15100 gulf fwy, houston, tx 77034) and was informed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 08v156000 (fuel system, gasoline). The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 91,628.

My 2005 passat has developed a fuel leak under the tank. My vehicle looks like new and only has 72000 miles on it. This leak/smell occurs after when the car is moving as well as when the car is sitting in the driveway. Seems very dangerous to me and i've read many complaints describing this exact scenario.why is vw not forced to recall and inspect for this situation.

This is the 4 th time i have had the check engine light come on along with misfire issues. Each time costing me at least 2000.00 to correct only for a short time. Have changed oil pump, plugs, injectors just to name a few. I love my car but this has been a money pit from day one. Vw needs to be held responsible for these issues. Oil sludge, is a big problem too. I just had the timing belt replaced with injectors and a new gasket set up and ran good for two months and now i'm back in the same position of needing the same repairs once again.car was driving began to shutter trying to stall. Help!

The first problem i noticed was when i exitedthe vehicle was that the remote control would not lock the doors.i thought the battery was dead so i manually locked them.i was unable to unlock the doors to the vehicle with the remote as well, so i manually unlocked them, started the car and proceeded on.i stopped for fuel, turned the ignition off, removed the key and realized that the engine was still running.i tried several times to get the engine to shut off but it would not.i continued on to my residence where again the engine failed to stop running with the key off and out of the ignition.i called vw roadside assistance who put me in touch with a dealer who talked me through stalling the engine by cutting off the air supply.i brought the vehicle to my local dealer the next day which was a saturday.there the engine would again not stop running, and i showed the technician how i had chocked it previously.following several hours of troubleshooting, the dealer traced the problem back to the sun visor.they believed that the home link system built into the visor was creating a reverse current flow which was enough to keep the engine running even with the key off and removed from the ignition switch.with the visor disconnected, the problem has not repeated.i have been in touch with one additional person with the same model and year of vehicle that has had the same problem.

Door opened unexpectedly three times while vehicle under way. Winter driving conditions with temperature swings. Twice had unrelated failure to latch, but those cases were obvious.in these three cases, the door closed and latched, but would not lock manually or by electric controls or by automatic speed-related locking program. The automatic locking feature was attempting to lock the car repeatedly. The door wasclosed securely and tested prior to departure during episodes two and three.during turns, the door popped open fully, with force, without warning.no injuries sustained.

Seecomplaint # 10195352.door continues to pop open, even when driving straight. It has happened without warning and without preceeding failure to close or latch properly.i contacted the dealership nearest to my home, and they told me, "it is probably the lock box. I have heard of this before.you don't have to bring it in. We can't replace it unless it is in its failed state."

I recently had issue with the torque converter leaking and failed, i research this online to see if iwas the only one having this issue, but there are hundreds of people out there with the same issue.i would like vw to recall their vw passat tdi for their torque converter failure. This should not go out for something right after the manufacture warranty. Some already has issue when it was only 51,000 miles.here are some of the website, which reported the tc problem from individual owners like myself:http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=307836http://www.passatworld.com/forums/68-b5-garage/327420-got-p0741-torque-converter-clutch-circuit-code-my-new-b5-5-tdi-passat.html.

Volkswagen passat passenger vehicle model year 2004 and 2005 with 2.0l diesel tdi engine.balance shaft and oil pump are driven with a chain mechanism which has a history of failure with less than 100,000 miles usage. This prompted a design change and a recall of affected vehicles in europe. No recall in north america. Recalled vehicles in other areas of the world were retrofit with a gear drive mechanism that is reliable.failure occurs without warning and will result in immediate loss of oil pressure and rapid engine damage including possibly engine seizure. If this were to occur at highway speeds it would be a clear safety hazard.

I decided to change the oil myself in my car, since i wanted to save money and i knew what i was doing.instead of draining the oil, i accidentally drained the transmission fluid.i didn't figure out that it was transmission fluid because it looked like oil!so, this is what happened after; i drove home (not knowing there was no tranny fluid in it) and i noticed that the car wanted to take off by itself.it kept doing tis two or three more times when it became stuck in 4th gear.i managed to safely get home, and figured out what happened.i am reporting this because this is a design flaw!!!the transmission fluid drain hole is where the engine oil drain hole should be!luckily, after i put fresh tranny fluid in it, the car was fine. I wonder how many other people this happened to.

2004-2005 passat tdi w/ bhw engine code.the balance shafts in this engine are driven by a hex shaft off the chain driven oil pump. This unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it cannot withstand. On various tdi forums, especially tdiclub.com, there are a significant number of chain failures being reported. Of course, when the chain driving the oil pump fails, the engine is starved of essential lubrication.if the failure of the chain causes engine to stop running in the middle of traffic, merging onto a highway, or passing on the highway, this condition could easily cause danger to all citizens nearby, possibly leading to death.when the chain fails, the parts to repair cost approximately $1800 plus approximately another $1500 in labor bills to have the parts installed.if the engine is destroyed, it will cost the owner approximately $8000 to replace the engine. This is unacceptable.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. The contact stated while driving 60 mph, there was an increase in engine rpms and the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician diagnosed that the transmission was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. The current mileage was 155,000.updated 7/25/14

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat tdi. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle, he noticed that all of the oil had leaked out. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the chain drive of the oil pump and tensioner was worn, which caused damage to the crankcase. As a result, the chain assembly needed to be replaced with a gear assembly. Also, the lower housing, oil pan and tensioner needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileage was 130,000.

Dtthe contact stated on october 9, 2005 the vehicle lostforward power.pushed on the accelerator pedal and the vehiclerevved, and the vehicle was in drive, but when putting the vehicle in driveit would move backward. There was no prior for warning ,and no type of odd noises. The contact stated the vehicle was at the dealer, and there were puttingin a new transmission . The dealer believed this happened due to some type of switch in the transmission. This vehicle only has 8,000 miles on it.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that the vehicle suddenly stalled while she was driving at a very low speed; she also could not shift into reverse or drive. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer who stated that the failure was located at the front and rear axle. The vehicle was repaired at a local repair shop. The failure mileage was 14,015 and the current mileage was 18,000.updated 06/17/11*ljupdated 06/21/11

Over 2 years since new, car hesitates with soft throttle acceleration likely between 1 and 2 gear, no throttle response for up to 5 seconds, very dangerous when making left turns across traffic or joining traffic from a stop.2005 volkswagon passat tdi most recent date given, hundreds of incidents of same. Vw dealer says normal, he experiences in moving cars around his lot. I say needs fixing and very dangerous.

The front and rear seat belts on the left side of my passat are defective.the drivers belt has been 'lazy' in retracting from time to time but it's 'normal' now.however, my left rear seat belt has been laying detracted on my seat for about 3 months now simply because nobody ever sits back there and i'm always driving this car for work.by reading message board such as www.tdiclub.com this is a very common complaint for the 2004 and 2005 vw passat.tomorrow morning i am going to make an appointment with my local vw for every seat belt in this car to be replaced.if they do not comply i will follow up with another complaint with the nhtsa.this needs to be a recall!

I had a 2005 vw passat heated leather seat burn my leg and seat.caused by faulty seat heater.

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. The contact stated the that front passenger's side heated seat was activated when a high voltage of heat penetrated through the leather seat cushion unexpectedly. The front seat passenger suffered from a burn to the right leg. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. The manufacturer was notified and accepted responsibility for the repair expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

On 10/20/11, i started my car and turned on the driver seat heater to 2, to warm the seat.i proceeded to drive to a 9 am appointment within 2 miles from my home.after driving just a couple blocks, i smelled a slight burning smell, but thought it normal since i had not used the seat heater in quite some time; it was just like turning the heat on in a home after several months of non-use. Within a few short blocks, i felt a sting in my left leg and thought it could have been a pine needle, so i shifted my body position to alleviate the issue.after a couple more short blocks, another stinging sensation.at the next stop sign, i reached down with my hand to feel what could be causing the stinging of my leg.i felt a hot spot in the left side of my seat and turned off the seat heater since my seat had warmed enough to be comfortable, but i did not think my seat was burning, so i continued on to my appointment.i went in to my appointment and came out to my car an hour and a half later.i noticed what looked like a small cigarette burn in the seat and a horrible smell in the car.i returned home and told my boyfriend about the incident.

Small hole has burned into the drivers side seat when heated seats activated. When the seat is activated, it burns through to my skin, making heat feature not usable.

I own a 2005 volkswagen passat gls. The factory installed seat heater malfunctioned the other day producing smoke, burning my buttock (and finger when i reached down) and burning two pea sized holes on the driver's seat.the local vw dealer was aware of the issue. I also called the district vw office at 1-800-822-8987 and notified them of the problem.apparently vw is covering the cost of repair on some but not all vws. I was told the 2005 passat is not covered under any kind of extended warranty. However, the district office is investigating the issue and promised to get back to me by day's end tomorrow.to me this is a safety issue. Other then minor burns to my buttocks and fingers, i was able to safely pull over and turn off the seat heater. The heat and smoke went right away. When i asked about the safety, the vw dealer's service department suggested i not use the heaters until they are repaired.i asked about disabling them via a fuse of something but they said unfortunate the fuse controlled other functions in the car. However, i believe this is a safety issue with the 2005 passat gls. I'm okay but others may not be so lucky. Also, i'm concerned how the vw dealer's service department suggested i just not use it again. What if someone else uses the car and i forget to tell them? the repair bill was estimated at $900+ for the driver's seat only.

I started the car and immediately turned on my driver's heated seat.within 2 mins, smoke started appearing on my left side.i realized my seat was starting to catch fire, so i quickly turned off the vehicle.luckily, my clothes did not catch fire.however, my heated seat burned a hole complete through the leather.this is a major safety issue.

Customer notices a metal on metal squeaking noise coming from driver and passenger front seats.noticeable when there is any weight shift of the occupant in the seat such as during acceleration, bumps, corners, etc.customer unable to determine if the metal on metal noise is from seat back, seat springs or seat mounting.customer is concerned that this will lead to a weakening of the metal components and the seat will fail during an accident.

Seat heater remained on after switched to the off position.heat increased to uncomfortable level, in-dash switch became too hot to touch, and smell of burning plastic filled cockpit (no smoke though).

The contact owns a 2005 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that the heated seats on the driver side of the vehicle caught fire. He was able to extinguish the fire.

I was turning onto a local busy street when my accelerator stuck to the floor and quickly shot up near 50mph. I had to quickly weave through traffic to not hit anyone while it stayed in a high speed. When i'd press the brakes, the car would slow down but still be going. When i let off the brake pedal, it quickly shot back up to 50mph. I was lucky to be able to turn onto a side street maybe 1 minute later and avoided hitting anyone else. I am beyond surprised that i was able to avoid hitting anyone with the amount of traffic. The pedal only came up when i put my foot under it (going slower/braking on the side street). It was normal after that. Extremely scary experience with an otherwise flawless vehicle that i have owned for going on 4 years.

Vehicle engine made unusual noise and stopped running.steering and brakes became very difficult. Could not restart engine and heard loud banging from engine when starter was turning engine. Had to have vehicle pushed out of roadway. Inspection of engine revealed that the crankshaft had broken.

Passenger side rear door molding has warped twice now and first replacement done months after lease inception, having been told it's not under warranty by potamkin vw in manhattan, ny.called vw and potamkin about second warping on replaced molding, only to be told that i must have hit it and that i pulled it off (which i did to keep it from further scratching the front door)...just read zillions of complaints on the web about the same issue with the car, some citing that it could be door's alignment and others that it could be molding alignment...don't know, but neither dealer nor vw customer service cooperating.

In 2007 i heard a noise from under my vehicle. It felt like something was loose and at times dragging the ground. I was advised by a co-worker that it was probably the under cover and to get it taken care of as soon as possible. On october 27th 2007 i took my car to darcars volkswagen. I was advised the undershield was damaged and i authorized the dealer to replace it. I contacted volkwagen of america by phone in november 2008 for reimbursement of repair costs for a defective underbody heat shields that i paid in october 2007 prior to the safety recall #26e5/r5 issued in june 2008. I was told the same day that my repairs were not related to the recall campaign. Recently, after i obtained lost receipts from volkswagen and examined them against all recalls--in hindsight something didn't seem right to me. I just couldn't fathom that the repair and the recall were not the same issue. I called volkswagen again about this recall and was told 1) there had been an extensive investigation on my initial claim 2) they had spoken with the mechanic that serviced my vehicle 3) that because i requested the heat shield to be replaced that i was responsible for the cost. I dispute that there was any investigation on my claim; that anyone spoke with the mechanic who serviced my vehicle; and most importantly that since i authorized replacement that i am liable for the associated cost of the damaged heat shield. It is my position that volkswagen is avoiding responsibility for reimbursement through deception and that they attempted to take advantage of my lack of knowledge of automotive specifics. I bid your intervention in this matter.

I was traveling on i-70 east 25 miles east of denver at mile marker 133, with three of my granddaughters in the car with me.i heard a noise and immediately started to pull to the right shoulder and brake when the car went out of control, spinning me out to the left across both traffic lanes, took me in a 360 degree circle and then into the ditch on the right side of the road.it was only an instant from first noise to being spun out of control - no warning.because i was spun out to the left, i was not hit by the semi directly behind me.the right rear tire ran ahead of my car from the point where i first attempted to stop.there was an incident report:colorado state patrol #[xxx].officer on scene examined tire and said it was an "instantaneous separation" of tread from sidewall and possibly faulty tire manufacture.he also said we should have rolled but my car's low center of gravity saved us.we were unhurt but traumatized.the tire was purchased 1-30-14, 3-1/2 months prior to incident and was in like-new condition.purchased from discount tires on lake mead in las vegas, manufactured by gt radial, giti tire (usa) ltd., 10404 sixth street, rancho cucamonga, ca91730-5831, phone (909) 980-0968.car had been completely gone over two days before when i departed on trip, tire pressure was checked the day before, and a visual check was done before i got on the road that day.there was no indication that the tire was damaged or underinflated in any way.i believe utterly that the tire was defective and am considering a lawsuit despite fact that we were uninjured.this was a terrifying event and one which could have taken the lives of my granddaughters through no fault of my own. This is happening more and more and mfgrs are using old "dry" rubber and/or ineffective adhesive.i trust you will pursue this very serious issue.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

When making a turn from a stop position, the car stalls.this also happenswhen going forward into traffic. I have reported this to the dealer on several occasions but they were unable to solve the problem.i feel this is a very dangerous situation.the mechanic went on a test drive with the consumer and he noticed that she drove with both feet, the mechanic explained that the transmission could not determine if the vehicle should sstop or go forward when turning, and therefore it stalled. The consumer stated she has made an effort to use only one foot and the problem seemed to be resolved. Updated 10/31/07.

Car had intermittent starting issues for about 6 months. Engine cranks but does not turn over. Will eventually restart anywhere from 15min - 5 hrs later. Length seems to be dependent on how long was driven before turning off. Code said the cps was faulty. Replaced it. But still having random problems and code still says cps is faulty. Cannot get it fixed because can't recreate problem at mechanics. Car does not die when driving. There does seem to be fluctuations in speed while driving. And does seem to be worse in rainy weather. Car doesn't run hot. Anybody else have the same probs? how did you fix?

The contact owned a 2005 volkswagen passat station wagon.while the vehicle was parked, it caught fire.the fire department extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined. There is a fire report but the contact does not have a copy. There were no deaths, injuries and no police report. The current and failure mileages are 40000.

My volkswagen passat has experienced scary acceleration without me pushing on the accelerator. This has happened twice, both when on the highway. I checked my mats, but they were not obstructing anything. I was so surprised to see the news tonight on channel 5 boston covering this story!

The car (vw passat tdi 2005) began accelerating on its own. The gas pedal would depress beneath my foot (without my pushing it) and the car would accelerate without stopping. When i hit the brake, sometimes it would jerk out of the "accelerating mode" (as if i had pushed the brake in cruise control), but then it would resume its acceleration within 30-60 seconds. Sometimes when i pressed the brake it would rev against the brake and i would have to shift it into neutral and then brake to get it to slow down and keep it from revving.this happened 3-4 times in the past 1-2 weeks. I made sure the cruise control was off during each of these episodes (since the car seemed like it was trying to go into cruise control when this problem occurred, but with no maximum speed set -- i.e., accelerating indefinitely).some things that may or may not be related: the air conditioning was on full blast. Each time it happened, i had been on the freeway going above 60 mph for at least 5-10 miles.at the end of the last episode, the car was producing smoke from the front wheel wells (likely because of braking against the acceleration).the dealership is examining the car right now, so i can't report what repair was done yet. (right after the last incident i had the car towed to a local vw shop, but they couldn't figure out the problem, so i'm having the car brought to the dealership tomorrow - 6/28/2010).

Regarding the incident of reference, reported under odi number 10146004, i have to say that i received a letter from the auto maker, volkswagen of america, dated january 11, 2006. It is my opinion that such letter does not address the fundamental point of the security and safety of the volkswagen vehicle that i leased. In this letter, volkswagen admitted "concerns" on some of the vehicles they manufactured and their inability to properly address those "concerns". I request the assistance of nhtsa in pursuing this matter as an issue of safety and defective production of a volkswagen automobile that may prove to be fatal because its malfunctioning has already provoked an accident. Please, advice on the course of action i should take versus volkswagen of america.

The motorized sunroof on my 2005 vw passat pulls the interior sunshade open with it when it is opened electrically.while the sunroof itself has an anti pinch feature, the sunshade handles/vents represent a pinch point as the sunroof opens.the handles/vents are hard edged plastic that have the potential to mangle a fingertip.i do not know whether the anti pinch system operates in the "open" direction of motion, but seems not to be active (based on my bruised finger)

Dt*: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked outside in rainy weather, water entered the vehicle through the weather stripping along the sunroof and leaked onto the floor board.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection who determined the drain line along the sunroof was clogged with debris and needed to be cleaned out.the manufacturer was alerted.

2005 vw passat, repeated total failure of windshield wipers. Does not seem to be predicated on any specific events.the dealership (duke gold's speedway volkswagen) is not familiar with the problem and does not seem to know how to fix it.
