I recently purchased a 2004 passat glx 4motion, the transmission clunks and the car lurches forward, this happens every couple of days. Not very impressive for a car that cost over $30,000.

I have a 2004 passat glx 4motion station wagon with 2000 miles on it. Like other owners i frequently experience a "clunk" from the transmission when i slow down and then accelerate from a stop. It occasionally lurches forward at the same time. The dealer has been unable to duplicate the problem. Not very satisfactory for a car that costs over $30,000

I was driving my passat on the highway going 60mph, suddenlyan other driver cut me off. To avoid him i switched lane but the traffic was moving slow as i was approaching a constructing site. I hit a car in front of me which caused other 2 cars ahead to be involved in the accident. The damage was severe as the whole front of the car was crashed including the engine and the passenger was fatally injured, he had a shoulder dislocation. What surprised me are the airbags, theynever deployedeven though i was driving 60 mph. After few days volkswagen america sent an engineer to inspect the car. After he left i noticed the seat belts are loose and the bottom cover is opened, it seems like he did it in purpose. Before he came the seat belts were fine. What most surprised me is his decision that the airbags can't deployed in this case. I showed him the bottom of the car where is the chassis, it was bent from the direct impact of the forces that came through the bumper which also cause the front beam to twist, but never gave me a satisfied explanation. People who try to buy this car and have kids please be aware of this safety issue, my family was blessed to get out of this accident just with a shoulder dislocation, which could be worst.my next step is lawsuit against vw.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 16v078000 (air bags); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

2004 volkswagen passat rear-ended a vehicle @ 40 mph and drivers air bag did not deploy.

While driving at approximately 35 mph driver t-boned another vehicle on the passenger's side and the air bags in the front of the vehicle failed to deploy. The damage was so extensive the car was deemed a total loss. Consumer's son sustained a sprained lower back, hyper extended knees, misaligned hips, etc.

Dtl:lease a 2004 volkswagen passat, had a high speed (40 mph) collision. Only the passenger side air bag deployed.no warring lights or failures with the air bags before.two other vehicle involved but they fled seen.

I was driving the car around 40 mph in downtown los angeles in the afternoon and i was the only occupant. Thevehicle in front of me suddenly slowed down. I pressed the brakes hard but the car did not stop and i tried to swerve to the shoulder but there was not enough room. I rear-ended the vehicle in front of me. I was puzzled and bewildered why the car was not stopping even though i was pressing on the brakes. I could see myself approaching the vehicle in front of me and wondering why i am not stopping but at the same time trying to swerve towards the shoulder.the airbag on the driver side did not deploy but the airbag on the passenger side deployed even though there was no passenger.

Side curtains airbag deployed for a non-crash impact while driving on a road at city speedafter a snowstorm. There was no collision.there is evidence of veryminor undercarriage damageto front rim of less than $225. Consequence is over $2800 in damage to interior of car from airbag, and surcharge from insurance total cost to us with airbag damage, surcharges, and car rental will be over $5000. The crash sensing algorithm seems to be too sensitive andmay recognize certain non-crash impacts (wheel, tire and undercarriage impacts) as deployable events.

Dt:the consumer was driving in a parking lot when the driver's side airbag deployed.there was no cause for the airbag to deploy.there was no warning.this occurred on october 2, 2005.the consumer sustainedminor pain, cuts, and bruises.the vehicle has not been inspected yet.

I own a volkswagen passat 2004 model.on november the 11th 2008 after working the night shift at mbusi in vance, alabama, i got in my car to go home.i turned on the heated seat just as i have done for the past 4 years only this time i got more heat than i wanted.my heated seat caught fire and burned my leg.in attempt to extinguish the fire, i wrenched my back by stomping out the fire with my foot.i did not have anything close to me to use with my hands so they would not get burned.i could not believe how fast my car filled with worst smelling smoke i have ever smelt.the seat was on fire before i even left the parking lot.if i would have waited two minutes to turn on my seat, i would have been on interstate 20/59 driving at 70mph and i can only imagine what would have happened.this is one of the worst experiences of my life.volkswagen has offered to replace the cover on the car, replace my pants and pay my medical bills, but what about the seat i will continue to sit on, and my confidence that this will not happen again.i am horrified to think about the potential for recurrence and i cannot overcome my ordeal i am devastated and have lost my confidence in the processes that are supposed to protect the consumer.

Vehicle has 80k miles i've replaced 3 mass air flow sensors, approx 12 coils.the latest issue is the epc - car stalls while driving, epc comes on.car will restart with some difficulty.

2004 vw passat 4 sedan rear cigarette lighter and ash tray are not safely and functional installed well. Have the tendency to keep coming apart entirely exposing electrical wires leading to burn and electrical shock or popping or burning of wires. Have had the problem repaired on multiple occasions by dealer as well as by myself to further prevent the mishap since out of warranty. My children bump the cigarette lighter and it caused sparks and burning smell. I was able to repair the enclosure again for the 13th or so time and since it's not under warranty it's not covered. Children sit in the rear more than adults but there has been time where the adults have causd the same issue. It's that my 9 yr old son try to repair or put back in where the entire enclosure fell out again.

2004 vw passat, vin [xxx]july 2010 - sunroof drains failed to drain; water entered cockpit; water destroyed convenience module under driver's seat.repaired $769july 2011 - sunroof drains, although open, could not handle flow of water, and again convenience module was destroyed.will be repaired soon.this current failure now has a 'airbag fault' warning on the dash.will not allow my wife to drive car.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I have a brand new 2004vw passat tdi wagon that has no tail lights. Signals work, brake lights work but, license plate light and rear parking/driving lights don't work. Car has no burned out bulbs or fuses. My concern is if the car has wiring harness problems, is this something that others have happening.also on a rainy day the anti lock brake and electronic stability program in the same car failed but, when the car was parked and restarted the computer reset and problem disappeared. Is this going to be a problem?

I had been driving my car for fewer than 15 minutes with the seat heating element on. I noticed an acute burning heat near my upper left leg, and shortly thereafter noticed a hot/burning/melting smell. I immediately turned off the driver's side seat and pulled into a parking spot. After being turned off for 10 minutes, the burning smell was still hanging in the car and my seat was still extremely hot to the touch. The gray leather near the outer left edge of the seating surface is emblazoned with a singed, brownish burn mark, and a hole was burned completely through the leather. I have not turned on the seat heating element since this incident, but am quite concerned about the failure and fire hazard.

I was driving my car to have dinner with my daughter and the carstarted losing power. It was only a 4 minute trip and by the time i got to my daughter's driveway, the engine was smoking. After using a hose to cool off the hood, the hood was popped and there was a fire on the passenger side of the engine.after we got the fire out, lot of hoses and the wire assembly were burned badly.

1. New 2004 volkswagen passat, v6 sedan.returned car several times under warranty for many types of repairs.volkswagen unable to repair car.both the dealer and volkswagen of america were made aware of the problems.2.several failures including but not limited to:excessive oil consumption, loss of power and acceleration, transmission problems, failure to start, malfunction indicator lamp constantly on, braking problems, climate control problems, and several electrical problems including failed brake lights.3. Several attempts by volkswagen has failed to fix the problems.they are unwilling to resolve the problems adequately.

On august 22 about 2:45 i was returning home from taking my daughter to work about3-miles away and i noticed smoke coming from my car i get out to look under the hood and i notice flames coming from the front right end under the hood. I panicked grabbed my belongings and called 911 the fire dept arrived and put the fire out.

The seat warmer on the driver's side started a fire that burnt through the seat and onto my leg.i had to pull over on the highway and turn off the car for it to stop burning.

2004 vw passat tdi. Vw has a problem with their turn signal switch. The switch continues to open and close the circuit after the turn signal is in the off position. This is a problem with many of their models( jetta, passat both gas and diesel).the dealership service personnel are aware of the problem and are replacing the defective switch only if your have all your maintenance done at a authorized vw dealer. So if you don"t have all your oil changes and repairs done by a authorized v wdealer there is no assistance for replacement of this defective switch. This is a cost of $300.00 tothe consumer. This sure is safety related and need to be recalled asap.this problem has caused fires under the instrument panel.

Faulty ignition coils on 2004 vw passat, 4 cylinder turbo engine.while driving the car, the engine loses power and dash board warning lights illuminate.ignition coils have been replaced numerous times.

Our 2004 passat's brake lights went out recently.there was no warning light or other process that told us the lights were out.we were almost in a car accident because the driver behind us didn't see our brake lights.after doing research i found that vw issued a recall for the brake light switch in 2007...but we never received such notice.i think this is a serious safety issue that should be communicated to the public.

I start the car up and it started making funny noise my check engine ligh came on the engine shaking act like it's going to cut off

I have had problems with my 2004 passat instrument panel since the first year i bought it.the panel would show false "door ajar" warnings and "trunk ajar" warnings.about a year later it started showing the "gas lid ajar" warning light.i reported it to the dealership and was told that there was no such light.it continued to happen, and the dealership told me to take pictures of the warning next time it occurred.this happened quite often, but the warranty ran out before i could show it to them and they now say that it's not covered.the instrument warning panel now gets so dim that you can't read it when the car gets too hot sitting in the sun.about a year ago, the engine warning light came on and the warning panel stated, "stop!turn engine off immediately."i was 320 miles away from home by myself at the time.i discovered that there was no problem.it was just a malfunctioning warning.two weeks ago, the engine light came on again, so because of the past false signals, i ignored it and drove a 640 mile round trip by myself.a week later, my husband and i were on a trip and the engine light was still on.the second day of the trip, our car battery went dead and we had to replace the battery.having a faulty system caused me to disregard the warnings and, therefore, had to purchase a new battery.i am thoroughly disgusted with volkswagens products and the dealerships service and integrity.

2004 passat 1.8t caught fire after a coil pack failed and the catalytic converter overheated. I only drove 5 miles after the coil pack failed trying to limp back to the dealer when the fire started. I put the fire out myself.

The2004volkswagenpassat 1.8 t car engine caught on fire today while drivingthedriver barely saved his life from the flames. The car would certainly burn completely if luckily there was no fire extinguisher available at the nearby stores.although the incident was in istanbul, turkey i happened to learn from the internet that nhtsa was conducting an investigations on the same problemfor 19 volkswagen passats. Volkswagen dealer in turkey told me that an engineer from volkswagengermany will come to turkey to perform an inspection on the car. Nobody touchedthe car yet.since the incident was today ant the car wasstill at the volkswagen authorized dealer service. I thought this information might be usefull for your investigation, and would like to learn your suggestions that you may want to share with me. Please write to my e-mail adress in case you need detailed information or would like to get the photoes of the engine caught on fire. Thanks.

The brake light switch keeps failing.it causes the electronic stability control to be disabled and keeps the stop lights on, even when the brake pedal is not depressed.i've had the brake like switch replaced 6 times now over the past 2.5 years.

Sun visor w/homelink causes #5 fuse to blow.wires are shorting out inside the visor causing smoke.when fuse blows you loose climatronic ac, cruise control, auto dimming mirrors, and steering wheel controls.

The vehicle heated up due to a fault in vw's passat cooling system and smoke started to come out from engine. I was driving at around 25 miles / km only. I towed the car to mechanic and had to do a costly repair for water pump, timing belt, etc.i see there is an open recall for this kind of issue in water pump in passats, so i truly believe the water pump was faulty from manufacturer side. I would like to be repaid for the money i have already spent on this.

My vehicle has been nothing but a nightmare! first the thermostat housing broke got that fixed and then everything else went down hill! oil pressure light started going and then it started overheating. The hoses all break and leak the coolant out plus the transmission code p742 which the transmission is stuck off is on . I can't afford the car worst car ever. It is fine if idle but once your driving everything starts beeping and when i'm turning you hear a noise on the side that your turning!

I noticed my coolant reservoir was low and added coolant. I had also noticed the smell of coolant in the car. The next day i check coolant level again itwas low with no leaks noticed under car. I opened rear passenger door and found at least 1" of coolant on top of the carpet. I started looking online for this issue and found hundreds of people that have experienced this on volkswagen. I think they should have recalled these or at least have to correct the problem case by case. My granddaughter has to ride in the back of this car and i don't believe it's safe anymore. I will have to bypass heater core to stop this until repairs can me made. What can be done to get volkswagen to fix this?

Ignition coil has failed 3 times in last 12 months.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph, an unusual sound was heard and smoke started to emit from the engine compartment as the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where the technician diagnosed that the timing belt had become fractured and the cam shaft pulley failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 128,000.

Steam came blowing out profusely from all hvac vents while driving on freeway.after the steam, then came the dash warning to stop driving. After pulling over, the car was shut off and because all coolant was gone, the car was towed to a repair facility who is determining the exact damageand cause.

The passat ignited in our driveway at 4:00 a.m. It had not been started/driven in a week.we woke to the sound of the tire bursting.there is a houston police department /arson case # [xxx] - phone # [xxx].inspector [xxx].he said the ignition area of the car was the start of the fire.i think he was arson department. The car was totaled.we are lucky we did not loose our house and neighbor's if we had not heard the tire blow.i am not exactly sure of the mileage but know it was low for the year and think it was below 90,000...updated 05/02/16information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

March 8 at approximately 10pm:on a trip back from out of town with my 2 young children and puppy, the rpms in the vw passat began escalating yet no additional power was coming into the engine.i tried shifting to a lower gear and also attempted cruise control to minimize the rpm racing.cruise control did not respond and the change in gear did nothing for the racing rpms.a few more miles down the highway the car began losing momentum -? it was similar to the feeling of running out of gas though i had a full tank. I moved the car into the service lane before the engine shut off.within seconds of pulling over, the engine began smoking.i felt the need to get out of the vehicle, even though i was on the highway late at night, pregnant, with 2 small children and a puppy.we left everything in the car, got out (i called 911) and were about 8 feet away when flames became visible escaping from the hood of the vehicle. A state trooper was passing through at the time and noticed the strong smell; he quickly circled back and then saw the fire.two fire trucks and 2 more state troopers arrived at the scene -?? but by that point -?? the entire front end of my car was in flames.the tires were so hot from the fire that they had melted to the road.the front end of the car was completely destroyed, the driver'??s side window was blown out, and the dashboard melted. Everything in the car experienced chemical smoke damage and/or water damage from the fire trucks.the insurance company ??totaled?? the car this morning. Sunday night i noticed that nhtsa was at one point investigating vw passat engine fires.i would encourage you to continue that investigation.though my children and puppy were not physically injured (i don't know if they have suffered mental trauma) -?? i am pregnant and do not know if the fumes will be toxic to my unborn child. ..updated 06/01/16updated 9/27/2017

While driving the car at highway speeds it stalls and the epc light comes on. This has happened many times while merging with other traffic and can be very dangerous. I have spent well over $1000 trying to get this problem fixed, and the problem still remains. Even the vw dealership dose not have an answer.

2004 volkswagen passat with 117000 miles on this car with 1.8 turbo, stop oil pressure low, took to a local mechanic and oil sludge was detected, was cleaned and started running normally again but emitted a white smoke that smelled from exhaust. Two weeks later stop oil pressure low on car again took to another mechanic and oil sludge build up again. Another 500.00 and this was yet again cleaned and white smoke still coming from exhaust. Was told that if the turbo is going out that the oil sludge will continue to build up and that it needs to be replaced.

Bought this car from original owner exactly two years ago. All receipts for upkeep & maintenance were available. Car ran great for 30,000 miles. One day it starting running bad within 30 mins whole motor shut down. Motor just shut down in middle of highway. Piece of metal found under valve cover and now for no reason needs a whole new motor!!!! this is a serious issue! very dissatisfied! i have owned three vehicles all for more than 10 years until this vw and now am without a car. Never will buy or mention anyone else buying a vw. Cannot afford to spend $3,000 for another motor after only owning for 2 years! now the car sits at a mechanic shop with new tires and new valve cover gaskets and a pos motor.

I began noticing a very strong smell of gasoline coming through the vent while driving. When i pulled over to check under the hood, i noticed that the rigid fuel line had cracked where it passed through a mounting bracket on the upper rear of the engine bay. The crack was emitting a steady flow of fuel onto the engine and exhaust manifold. We did not drive the car any further and had the line repaired with a patch of flexible fuel line material.

It never occurred to me that there was aproblem with the engine...everytime i have the oil changed but it seems to be losing a little bit of oil. I need to add oil every 200 to 300 miles to the engine....i've checked for oil leaks..cant find any...please advise...rear seals? maybe

The balance shaft assembly and the engine oil pump system drive will fail. Failure of balance shaft assembly and the engine oil pump system drive can lead to catastrophic engine failure with loss of oil pressure, broken oil pan, broken front engine seal flange, and damaged crankshaft. This can result in damage to the extent that the engine must be replaced. If this occurs while the vehicle is in traffic, it can lead to a collision with injuries or deaths.

2004 vw passat 1.8t.upon starting car, check engine light came on.took to dealer, autobarn of evanston (il) who replaced thermal sensor for $500.less than 2 miles after leaving dealer, car ran hot and a/c went out, had to pull over to cool. This was not an issue prior to visiting the dealer.returned to dealer.dealer replaced "thermal switch" for $300.car still ran hot.dealer now says radiator is clogged and needs to be replaced ($700+).car has been serviced regularly per vw, radiator was flushed 4,000 miles ago.car only has 65,000 miles on it.either car is defective or dealer is ripping me off.

In the 2004 vw passat tdi (diesel engine) the balance shaft & oil pump are driven by a chain.the chain failed at 101,000 miles and stopped engine lubrication instantly.required unsafe maneuver in traffic to get off road to a safe stopping spot.

Sludge buildup cause by vw design flaw led to engine locking ... Vw refusing to cover engine replacement even though covered by power train warranty.

2004 volkswagen passat with the oil pressure light on. Consumer states that the mechanic refuses to see why her vehicle is acting up. She was told to produce receipts saying that the oil was changed.the consumer stated she did some research and discovered the vehicle produced sludge no matter how often the oil was changed. A mechanic informed the consumer that vw should issue a recall and fix the oil pressure pump immediately.

Oil sludge is clogging oil pick up and stop/oil light is going on. Starving engine of oil. Full synthetic oil has always been used.

A potential issue has come to my attention that some engine parts related to the balance shaft assembly and the engine oil pump system drive can fail as early as 45,000 miles. And if the failure of said components do fail, severe engine damage can easily occur forcing the driver, at minimum, to pay an unreasonable and very costly service bill. If a driver experiences a sudden loss of power from the engine during a typical highway pass or merging on a roadway, the cost would be unfathomable pertaining to the loss of life, far surpassing the cost of a new engine and the labor to install the engine. Volkswagen has come up with a fix by changing the chain to a gear. They have not acknowledged this problem as yet, even with many of these vehicles having failed. It is just a matter of when not if this will happen to every 2004 passat with the bhw engines. I would like to know what steps volkswagen of america is taking to inform 2004 and 2005 passat tdi owners of this problem. Good corporate citizenship would dictate a problem of this severity should be communicated to the owners as soon as possible. These engine failures could leave motorists stranded under dire circumstances.

About 1/2 mile from my house car indicated that there was an oil pressure issue and displayed "stop engine".proceeded to drive home and let the car cool off and checked oil level.oil level was fine, based on the dip stick.started the car up and the car was very loud and exhibited a rough and irregular idle."stop engine" indicator came on again.did research on the internet and found that there have been numerous other issues with exactly the same issue.issue apparently sludge build up in the engine.car is currently at repair shop and i have no faith that this will be resolved in a positive way (ie not costing me as the car is out of warranty) as apparently there is a design issue with this engine and manufacturer, repair shop recommended changing the oil filter and oil, yet the most recent oil change was performed just about 3 weeks ago.next they are recommending that they take the oil pan out and look for "repairable culprits", which i believe is just nonsense as i'm sure this is not the first time they've dealt with this specific issue.this is a cash cow for the repair shops/dealers.i would like to know what if any recourse i have. I've seen other similar complaints as well, has volkswagen acknowledged the issue?i've stuck with the manufacturer's recommended service interval and product requirements, so i am at a loss if this is not being investigated as some form of negligence on vw's part.

I was driving inside town approximately at 35 mph and was stopping in the stop light. When i applied the brake the car was shaking and check engine light started flashing. After the stop light turned green i released brake and the shake was not there and check engine light was gone. I went few miles to pick my daughter and after picking my daughter and less than a mile on road the check engine light came on again and there is a slight vibration of the vehicle when the engine is turned on. I'm yet to take the vehicle to the repair shop. Not sure if there is any factory recall for this problem.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat.while driving 50 mph, the stop warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel.within seconds, the contact was unable to accelerate.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the engine failed due to a massive oil deposit.the engine was replaced.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 77,000 and current mileage was 89,000.

I own a 2004 vw passat with 35000 miles.the car is like new, except the stop engine light came on.took it to a local mechanic, and they did not address the problem.took it to gunther vw in coconut creek florida, for a diagnostic.i was told to go home and they would call me with the results.they left a message that the car needed a new engine, and to come and get my car.i called and asked what were my options and they said the car needed a new engine for $8600.i called vw corporate, they said that there was a letter sent in 2004 to the owners of cars with the 1.8 turbo, i had never seen this letter.it was faxed to me, i was stunned at the tone of the letter, if i had seen this letter i immediately would have gotten rid of this car.there are 197000 websites concerning this engine, and people are still buying these cars without being told they are buying a car with a defective engine.vw now states that this engine needs an oil change every 3000miles, and if you go past the 3000 mile mark, they are not responsible for the engines performance.these cars should be recalled before someone is killed when their engine stops in traffic.

Oil sludge problem with my 2004 vw passat 1.8l turbo has caused irreversible engine problems.

2004 volkswagen passat.consumer writes in regards to engine failure and unsatisfactory customer service at dealership.the consumer was informed it would cost 8,000 to replace the engine. She discovered a recall was issued for wagonsfor engine oil sludge. The dealer then stated, they would replace the engine for $4,000. The consumer stated the mileage was well within range, for the engine to be covered under the 65,000 mile warranty.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat.while driving 40 mph, the turbo booster became very hot and the engine warning light illuminated.the first time the failure occurred, the vehicle was towed to the dealer.the dealer replaced a certain part of the vehicle, which temporarily corrected the failure.less than two months later, the turbo booster began to overheat again.the contact believes that the vehicle has a manufacturer defect.the vehicle is currently located at the dealer being repaired.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 63,000 and current mileage was 68,000.

The driver owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that the check engine warning light began illuminating. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was told that pieces of the engine block were fracturing into the oil pan. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 150,000. The vin was unavailable.

The sludge problem that is common in volkswagen 1.8 4 cylinder engines has happened to our car. The dealer has repaired the problem but volkswagen refuses to honor the warranty even though we have jumped through every hoop they can think of. The last one is that they wanted the vin number printed outon every oil change receipt.

I own a 2004 volkswagen passat, which i lease from vw. I was backing out of my driveway at no more than three miles per hour into the street.as i cut the wheel to keep the vehicle on my side of the traffic lanes, i ran askew of the driveway and over the rising edge where the driveway rises to meet the curb - a mere 6".i have pictures.i heard a faint scraping noise and lamented the fact i scraped the bottom of the car, but given the miniscule height of the drop from mid-curb edge to the street, i didn't think anything of it and proceeded to my destination and then back home without incident.the next time i used my car i noticed a large puddle of oil and was shocked to find that the oil pan, which was strategically engineered to reside at the lowest and most susceptible place on the engine, had the tiniest crack and was leaking oil.i called vw to inquire about a new part where they informed me that the oil pan is aluminum and cost $158 for a new one, but that because it is bolted to the vehicles sub-frame it will cost me $650 in labor to repair the part. Nearly $800 to fix an oil pan? this is clearly an attempt by vw to extort more money from its customers.who would design a vehicle in such a manner as this otherwise?to place an aluminum oil pan at the lowest point of the engine with no protection is criminal.luckily i noticed this leak, but others who may be less observant could easily rupture this oil pan as innocuously as i did and failing to notice the leak, continue to drive the car as it leaks oil - potentially burning up the motor and causing dangerous engine fires or worse, the engine seizing at high speeds.i contacted vw about this issue and that they wouldn't do anything to help me recoup the costs of this repair.this car has a major safety flaw that could make millions of motorists susceptible to serious harm and i hope that the nhtsa will further investigate this issue and help save any future loss of money or life.

2004 volkswagen passat 1.8l turbo. Oil sludge class action. My car had the stop engine warning come on the other day after the required oil change. Since i am the second owner of this car i can not prove the oil changes where done as vw recommends. I have only owned the car for a few months. Sadly i am looking at a total engine change with no help from the class action suit or vw. I have owned a vw on and off for 15 years. This will be my last if they don't make good on the recall. *ln

While under warranty complained to dealer of noise from engine area. Dealer could not determine where noise was coming from but said not to worry problem was noted and would be covered if/when something failed. Out of warranty now, dealer states power steering pump needs replacing, not covered under warranty. Had the power steering pump replaced, not by dealer but severe wine remains. Was told it is probably ac pump. Had belt tensioner replaced also with no resolve. Noise is a loud wine, constant varies slightly when ac is on. Have heard several other passats with same noise. No failure has occurred as of yet.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. On october 24, 2009 she noticed that the vehicle had an oil leak. The dealer replaced the oil pan at the owners expense for $500. On january 12, 2010, the oil failure recurred; however, the dealer replaced the oil tank for $500. She stated that the failures occurred when she drove over a speed bump and a rock while driving approximately 15 mph. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls for the oil pan; therefore, they would not assist with the repair cost. The failure and current mileages were 75,000.updated 02/17/20

Iown a 2004 vw passat tdi (diesel) with 64, 500 miles on it.i did not have a failure but i was so concerned about it, that i had it pre- fixed.the problem is that the balance shafts in this engine are driven by a chain off the motor which also drives the oll pump.this unfortunate design subjects the chain to stresses it can't withstand.on various tdi forums, especially tdiclub.com, there have been a significant number of chain failures reported.when the chain driving the oil pump fails, the engine is starved of essential lubrication and if it failsit can cause catastrophic engine damage and the engine could seize up which would be life-threatening.recently, vw in europe recognized the problem and designed a repair, which changes the chain driven oil pump to a gear driven oil pump.this appears to be a permanent fix to the original design defect.since, unlike vw of america, i am unwilling to put my and my child's life at risk, i recently paid almost $3000 to have the balance shaft module replaced with the gear driven one.most of the people having this problem are experiencing it after the car is out of warranty and vw done nothing to notify the nearly 12, 000 owners of these vehicles.most of the people driving these vehicles have no idea that their car is a potential time bomb.it is not a matter of if, but when, because of the poor design, they all will fail.i was fortunate that the parts were available; there has been a shortage and people have had to wait several weeks just for the parts to come in.if the part fails and destroys the engine, the cost for that repair is $8-10,000.this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed by vw of america and we need your help.thank you for your consideration. The mechanic informed the consumer the module and chain drive had not failed, but they were showing signs of fatigue. Updated 04/15/09.

On 12/28/2007 the oil cooler on my 2004 passat failed and allowed large quantities of oil to leak into the coolant. The oil cooler repair was covered under vw's powertrain warranty. Per the passat owner's manual and per verbal confirmation from vw, when a part covered under warranty fails and causes damage to other parts, those other parts are covered under warranty as well.in this case the dealer, flow volkswagen of greensboro, nc, replaced not only the oil cooler but also the coolant reservoir, and flushed the cooling system 3 times. During the service they telephoned me at work and gave me a quote of nearly $300 to replace the thermostat because they felt it could have been damaged by the fouled coolant. At that time i was not aware that the thermostat was covered under warranty, nor did i know that the dealer already had the thermostat completely out of the vehicle. The dealers service technician noted that the coolant was the consistency of mud. The $300 quote that the flow volkswagen dealer gave me involved a double charge on the labor as well as violated vw's warranty policy that the thermostat should have been covered. The dealer was already going to charge vw for the removal of the thermostat and other cooling system components, yet they were calling to ask me to pay for the labor as well as for the warranty covered part itself (the thermostat) that was damaged by the oil cooler's leak. During the phone call when i was given the quote the flow volkswagen service personnel told me that the thermostat might be okay since they were cleaning it. In august of 2008, the passat's check engine light came on. According to flow volkswagen this time, the thermostat needed to be replaced and the total charge would be $478.

"oil sludge" related repairs on '98-04 model year vw passat equipped with 1.8l turbo engines.was not notified until engine light came on march 2010.letter from vw of america did not prescribe 3000 mile oil change, but when contacted, said in order for "extended warranty to be enforced" vehicle must have 3000 mile oil change.letter from vw subsequently faxed over on 3/22/10 does not state rules regulating oil change or subsequent limitations on "extended warranty".my 04 vw passat with 35k miles had to have a new engine, and had i seen the august '04 letter prior to 03/10 would have gotten rid of car as soon as i read letter.the engine is clearly defective, and vw has an obligation to inform all vw owners of these vehicles to inform them of this deformity.i bought the car new in 2004 and never saw a copy of this letter until my engine failed.the letter states 5000 mile oil change intervals, but when i presented proof to gunther vw of coconut creek florida, that my car was in compliance, they stated that it had to be 3000 mile intervals.there are over 197000 websites, and blogs dealing with the vw 1.8 turbo, but no one has addressed this problem, and people continue to buy these cars off used car lots, unaware that they are buying a car with limited expectations, and possible engine replacement.please feel free to contact me at [xxx]. So that we can discuss saving someone's life before this car's engine failure in heavy traffic.you have officially been notified of the dangers of this engine.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

It has come to my attention through the b5 forums at www.tdiclub.com that all 2004-2005 vw passat tdi engines have been outfitted with a faulty chain driven oil-pump (aka balance shaft) assembly that has an extremely high rate of failure. Failure of the oil-pump assembly has proven to cause multi-thousand dollar repair bills for owners that experience a failure while driving. A bulk of the failures have been occurring on 04-05 passat tdi's well before the cars reach 100,000 miles. There are no warning signs to oil pump failure other than louder than normal engine noises. Vw has since redesigned the oil-pump assembly to incorporate a gear-driven mechanism that isn't prone to failure. Unfortunately vw has not taken into consideration the thousands of passat tdi owners that are being forced to upgrade their cars on their own dime. The upgrade costs ~$2,500 (parts & labor).it is of my opinion (and the thousands of fellow passat tdi owners) that this faulty design should be recalled immediately as the potential for an oil-pump failure causing property damage and/or death is eminent.

The owner's manual states that the engine coolant is not to be replaced. However, i now have a heater core that is clogged and that causes no heat in the passenger compartment of the car. The instructions given to consumers in the volkswagen owner's manual is in error and leads to expensive repair costs.

Purchased a used 2004 vw passat in april 09. Did not purchase an extended warranty for the vehicle, however, such would not have covered this issue regardless. The passat heating/air conditioning system is a climatronic. The vents and airconditioning operated as they should. After purchase, noticed on cool mornings that vehicles heat ws not operating correctly necessary for defrosting/defogging windshield and windows. Took vehicle back to dealership and requested diagnostic. Diagnostic was no flow through heater core and recommendation was replacement of heater core in order to receive heat. No indication of any posed danger or threat was indicated by dealership as to this issue. Three months after the diagnosis, having operated the vehicle with no heat for 6 months, the vehicle has now begun to leak massive amounts of antifreeze/coolant, however, the coolant is not leaking out of the car, i cannot see any coolant or very little coolant anywhere underneath, therefore i can only assume that the antifreeze is leaking into the vehicle, possibly posing a fire hazard and risk of being burned should the pressure of the coolant system become to great and the volume of antifreeze in my vehicle is unknown. I am not operating the vehicle at this time. I contacted vw customer care and informed them of this problem, the indicated my vehicle is too old and has too many miles on it for any goodwill replacement. However, there was a recall on vw jettas for a similar issue with the heater core.

My 2004 volkswagen passat is part of the "vw oil sludge settlement". I have done all scheduled oil changes, maintenance, etc. I have all receipts. I had to replace the engine coils, the underbody heat, etc. Nov. 20th 2010 i took the car in because a performance light related to the engine came on. I did not know at the time the warranty of the vehicle had been extended. I had to pay $ 654.11 for repairs and spent 4.5 hours at the dealer, vw south service, waiting for my car. Now, i have to take it back in for the same light coming on as in november. I have2 years to pay for the car approximately $ 8000.00. A car that is known has major issues with oil sludge and the engine. I cannot afford to continue to pay volkswagenfor a car that is going to give me headaches in the next 2 years, a lemon.and will continuously cause me to miss work. I have the settlement letter and a file with all receipts.vin# [xxx] - 2004 passat gls 1.8tinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

We have a 2002 and a 2004 volkswagen passat sedan and wagon. Both have suffered motor mount leakage and both have broken water pump dispellers. We have replaced the water pump parts and are saving up to replace mounts on both vehicles. This seems to be a weak part for volkswagen. We are constantly going to get something fixed which is not a typical repair for automobiles from other companies.

Excessive noise from engine - chain driven oil pump.this noise has gotten progressively worse and will lead to catastrophic failure while driving.oil will cease being fed to the engine and seizure will occur.at 70 mph this will likely lead to death of occupants and possibly others in vehicles behind mine.this has been reported to dealer as well.

The chain on the oil pump, balance shaft assembly failed at 96,000 miles.it was detected by a mechanic before the engine seized.the entire oil pump and balance shaft assembly was replaced.had the problem not been detected, and the chain broke, the engine would have been starved of lubrication and failed. This is the diesel passat with the bhw engine.

The balance shaft chain drive in the bottom end of our 2004 passat started to make noise.they will all fail.i am a mechanic specializing in these cars, and have currently had to repair 27 of these, including my own.many break apart completely, and cause the oil pump to quit turning and the engine to lock up suddenly.i have one such car here right now.vw has come up with a fix for this, to retrofit a gear driven unit, but as of yet has not even acknowledged this very serious problem that more times than not manifests itself in the 60 to 80k mile range.the cost to repair proactively is about $2500, but of the engine is damaged, the cost is about $9000.this is a very serious safety issue, and can cause the engine to suddenly seize while underway!

The balance shaft chain drive in the bottom end of our 2004 passat tdi has started to make noise. They will all fail. I am a car enthusiast and from what i understand through the pains of many that have already replaced their failed or failing chain driven balance assembly, many break apart completely, and cause the oil pump to quit turning and the engine to lock up suddenly.vw has come up with a fix for this, to retrofit a gear driven unit, but as of yet has not even acknowledged this very serious problem that more times than not manifests itself in the 60 to 80k mile range. The cost to repair proactive is about $2500, but if the engine is damaged, the cost is about $9000. This is a very serious safety issue, and can cause the engine to suddenly seize while underway! currently there is not even a warning of any kind from vw to owners of these vehicles to be aware of this issue. If not for an internet forum, fred's tdi club.com, i like many others who still are, would be completely oblivious to this serious and potentially catastrophic failure.

2004 volkswagen passat. Consumer expresses discontent with vw regarding defective engines *tgwthe consumer stated vw has acknowledged that the engine's were defective.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat.while driving 30 mph, the check engine light illuminated and the engine began to shutter.the contact smelled rubber burning and the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic.the cause of failure was diagnosed as a failed ignition coil.the vehicle was repaired.the current mileage is 56,010 and failure mileage was 55,955.

My 2004 vw passat has 23,700 miles on it when the stop engine light went on. I had it towed to east coast vw where i had leased it. They told me i have the well known 'engine sludge' problem and it will cost between $2700 and $5000 to repair it. I was told that i needed my oil change history documentation.i produced 5 invoices for the time i had the car (dec. 3, 2003). I was told my invoices were not good enough and vw will not honor my warranty.

While driving the engine lamp came on and the test message indicated "emission workshop".the dealership found the mass air flow meter (p0101) to be faulty. It was replace but the problem and code recurred within 6 miles. Next the dealership found a crack in the turbo air cooler, it was replaced but the problem and code recurred within miles. The dealership has had the car for nearly 2 weeks when they found a slight air leak in a turbo hose. The "o" rings were replaced and it may have corrected the problem but i have not had the car since they are still working on the engine surge problem.

It never occurred to me that there was aproblem with the engine...everytime i have the oil changed but it seems to be losing a little bit of oil. I need to add oil every 200 to 300 miles to the engine....i've checked for oil leaks..cant find any...please advise...rear seals? maybe

My car, a 2004 vw passat glx automatic, has had a transmission problem since the day i bought it, when the salesperson told me it just needed to adjust to my driving style.months later, it was clear that it wasn't adjusting to my driving style.i took it in and it was "fixed."about may or june of 2006, it began to experience problems again, e.g., slamming, surging, delayed engagement, etc.i gave it some time, hoping it would "readjust," then took it innovember of 2006, when the problems had become more acute.in a 4-5 minute test drive within a mile of the dealer, the most worrisome malfunctions could not be repeated.the service manager at the time said the minor issues were normal, and that i would have to "write a letter" to get the problem addressed.on saturday, 2/3/07, a transmission surge propelled my car over a speed bump and into the concrete, causing what i presumed was an oil leak.this transmission issue presents obvious hazards to people, in addition to property.as of today (2/6/07), the dealer is requesting that i pay approximately $900 to fix the oil pan so they can drive the car and address the transmission malfunction.

I have a vw passat with less than 30,000 miles on itthat has sludge in the motor and have been faithful with my oil changes but i am missing one receipt. Vw of america refuses to cover the work under warranty stating lack of maintenance on my behalf for the problem. They are taking no responsibility for the defective engines they are putting in these cars but blaming it on the consumers. I am sorry i ever bought this car and i am now left with no transportation for my kids to get to school and for me to get to work and i have no money to fix the car because i am a single mother living paycheck to paycheck. It is very frustrating that i have to be driving down the freeway with my 3 daughters in the car and have my engine freeze up and almost crash into several cars trying to get over to the side of the road. I then take it to the closest dealer to be treated like dirt and told i did not do enough to take care of my car. They then shuttle me off to some advocate for vw and he treats me even worse and tells me sorry the answer is no have a nice day.. I have never been treated so poorly in my life and i am appalled that i ever bought this car and will tell everyone i know about this issue and warn everyone i know to get rid of their vws.

I purchased a used 2004 vw passat with 34k miles in september 2007. The car was running file and has been kept current with oil changes. On april 3, 2009, my fiance was driving us home from work and a loud knocking noise started and a message displayed saying stop! oil pressure low. This has never happened before. We were still far from home so we pulled over and took a look under the hood. The oil was low for some reason, although it was recently changed, so we purchased a quart to get us home. We continued to drive home and starting losing power as this knocking noise continued. We did make it home. The car was towed from our home to a vw dealer the next day. We were told that the crank shaft was damaged due to oil sludge build-up in the engine. Basically, the engine was shot and i needed a new one, which would cost about $4k with about $2k in labor. The car only has 55k miles on it - how could this happen? we then went online and conducted a search. We found that this is a well-known problem with 1.8 t engines between 2003-2005. I was mortified. I was never given any information from vw about this issue, although the car was purchased used. The dealer told us that vw extended the powertrain warranty for to 8 yrs due to this issue but we must provide oil change receipts. We had none, because not only did we not have ones from the previous owner, but my fiance changes my oil and although he used the required synthetic oil, the dealer told us that there are "approved brands" that must be used. We were never given this info because the owner manual only says use 5w40 or if not available, use 5w30 oil. So, we are left with nothing. It can cost anywhere between $4-8k to fix. The cost to get a new or used engine plus labor is ridiculous. I'm driving my old honda that has 231k miles while my vw sits at the shop waiting to be fixed. I fear the bill. I planned to purchase a new vw in a couple years, but now i will never buy a vw again and will make sure my story is heard!!

Oil sludge developed in the engine of my 2004 vw passat wagon 1.8t, causing excess engine wear and $2800 service charge to desludge the engine.the sludge was caused by a problem known to vw but not made known to vehicle owners.i would like vw to reimburse me for the cost of this service.at a minimum, i would like vw to notify all customers of this defect (including warranty coverage requirements) and provide periodic sludge checks, every one to two years.

Oil sludge problem with my 2004 vw passat 1.8l turbo has caused irreversible engine problems.

Engine started fine, and let it ran for a minute or two on drive way.then suddenly it died.computer screen displayed "stop",oils pressure can, and low oil pressure warning lights came on.

After hitting 100,000 miles on 2004 passat, the warning light came on for low oil pressure.i took it in to vw and they quoted me $2,800 to replace all oil lines and vacuum lines.i did some research and found out that this is a known problem with vw engines and even after doing the $2,800 worth of work, the engine will still fail within a year.i have gone to another repair shop to perform an oil flush and i was able to drive another 500 miles before the light came on again.i have gone for 2 more oil flushes.now, they will do 2 oil flushes each time.the first time, there will be a lot of sludge that comes out and the 2nd time is clear.there is an obvious problem with sludge build up and will eventually ruin the engine.i know there was a recall on 1.8t engines for this same issue.it is an issue with all vw engines, not just the 1.8t.

Vw passat 2004 purchased new from dealer in jan. Of 2005. We did our own oil changes following the manual recommended schedule and oil specifications (every 5,000 miles 5w-30 or 5w-40 regular or synthetic oil).we never received a letter from vw nor the dealership about the extended warranty for the known oil sludge problem nor any new requirements for oil changes.most of the oil changes were done at home and recorded in the manual; two were done outside and have receipts.oil pressure light went on at about 45,000 miles, car was towed to dealership.they recommended a new motor. Dealership contends that warranty will not cover it because they require synthetic oil only and for oil to be changed at the dealership. Vw warranty denied warranty service.car is still at the dealership.

Vehicle:2004 volkswagen passat gls sedan with 2.0 tdi motorproblem:chain driven oil pump has serious vibration.it is not on volkswagen's suggested maintenance list or things to check during preventable maintenance. The cast metal chain tensioner cracks and fails, causing loss of tension on the oil pump drive sprockets which leads to :1. Wear on drive sprockets.2. Catastrophic failure of the oil pump.3.complete loss of engine power without warning at any speed in any traffic condition.i do not know the complete failure rate for this equipment, but i do know this setup was sold on approximately 20,000 2.0l turbo diesel motors, stamped bhw.this setup was only sold in north america and other similar motors in european markets have a gear driven oil pump that do not show the failure rate being seen in the n.a. Market.volkswagen in north america has discontinued making the chain driven oil pump, replacing it with the gear driven pump originally available only in foreign markets.volkswagen continues to stand by that there's no problem with chain driven pump, yet there a numerous accounts of failing tensioners, chains, sprockets and balance shafts (hex shaft holding the driven sprockets) due to loss of tension and poor design.every chain driven oil pump on the bhw motor will fail. Mileage does not appear to be a determination on when this will fail as reports of wear and failure from 45,000 to 180,000 miles are being reported on internet volkswagen diesel forums.for photos of failed parts, see:see post #743:http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=233651&page=50note:this complaint does not refer to the timing belt assembly or timing belt.it refers solely to the chain driven oil pump and balance shaft assembly on the bhw type turbo diesel motor.

I have a 2004 vw passat 1.8 t. I have a complaint with this whole oil sludge issue. Although i do not have a problem yet but i want to be prepared in the advent of mechanical failure. The problem i have is that i received a letter in the mail 2 years ago about the possibility of engine failure do to oil sludge. I since then have been taking the car to the dealer and paying 80 dollars to get the oil changed with the full synthetic oil. Now i am reading that even when using the synthetic oil there are numerous cases of engine failures do to oil sludge. Not to mention the dealer will not cover costs of engine replacement if all receipts of oil changes are not shown. Which is not fair because up until 2 years ago i did not even think we had a problem. So vw has a defect with there unsafe engines and on top of it they scare people into getting the oil changed with full synthetic and then come up with an excuse like you were late on an oil change therefore you have to pay $5,000.00 for engine replacement. I still owe $12,000.00 on the care and i owe more then the car is worth so i cannot sell it, please tell me what can i do to protect myself. Had i have known this in 2004i would never have purchased the vehicle. I just don't that this is the american way to sell people a inferior product and then make money off there turmoil.

My 2004 vw passat:was driving when noticed a gasoline smell in the car.the car stalled, heard a pop sound from under the hood and immediately saw smoke/orange flame -the engine was on fire.

Vehicle passat 2004. 1.8 wagon. With 62000 miles on it,problem as follow , steam cameoff ventilations when heaters is activated, fogging windshield and windows, the smell is so strong odor of antifreeze filling the whole cabin and causing nausea and headaches to whoever is in the car when car is been driving, according to the dealers repair person the heater core is leaking and need to be replaced at the dealer only at cost of $1600.00 thee part is not a moving part that is easy accessible and that needs regular maintenance, this is a part that came defective from factory and vw does not want to repair not acknowledge that this part came defective from the manufacture. And should be fixed by them ,thatis a problem that is a hazard to the driver, and passenger health due to the toxic fumes that emanated throughout the vents from the heater core leakage and entering the inside of the cabin, it should be recalled to fix this very problem that may cause people develop any type of lung cancer inhaling this fumes. On top of the described problem this car has been in repair for bad water pump, bad heating sensor, bad thermostat, broken cv boots at 50200 miles, bad battery, warning sensor lights. This car is a lemon.

I have sent information regarding to nhtsa about three weeks ago regarding my 2003 volkswagen passat and engine seizure which occurred september 25, 2004 on a major bridge in newport news va.my car is under warranty.volkswagen of america is aware that they have engine oil sludge problems (2004 volkswagen passat 1.8t engines.however, there position is that i neglected the car.i have had four -five oil changes.i took my car in to joe pecheles, greenville, north carolina, august 25 due to the engine oil pressure light being illuminated.i was told to bring the car back august 26, 2004.i did so.i was given my car back and told the oil had been changed.therefore, i thought my car was in good working condition.i have talked to the area service represeentatives and i was told volkswagen of america would not honor the warranty.i will be happy to forward you correspondences.however, i have sent you information as stated.

2004 passat 1.8t caught fire after a coil pack failed and the catalytic converter overheated. I only drove 5 miles after the coil pack failed trying to limp back to the dealer when the fire started. I put the fire out myself.

This incident happened twice in december 2009.after lifting my foot off of the accelerator pedal, the vehicle kept accelerating to very high speeds.the vehicle did not stop accelerating when i put my foot under the accelerator pedal and lifted up.to stop, i had to put the vehicle in neutral and brake.dealer said it was a stuck floor mat and removed the mat from the vehicle.they said there was no mechanical defect.*tw

Am radio reception is very poor (static) with the on star feature.dealer replaced the radio twise & antenna system.... Stills fails.

Car parked front facing west appears to have caused the headlights to fog over on the inside.dealer sold me a kit for approximately $15 and i was told to apply to the outside.that was when i realized it was on the inside and not the outside.i am retired and on a fixed income and now the dealer wants $250 per headlight plus labor to replace them.

In six months my brake lights have stopped working twice they had to replace the brke light swith on it.

2004 volkswagen passat. Consumer writes in regards to class action settlement against volkswagen, stating a series of issues such as oil sludge, engine malfunction issues, anti-freeze and coolant issues and ignition coil issues with volkswagens *tgwthe consumer stated she learned there was a specific type of coolant that only be used for her model vehicle. She stated each summer she drove around with 2 containers of anti-freeze because the vehicle would consume so much anti-freeze. Also, the brake light bulbs were replaced.

1. When car in front of the passat slowed, the driver applied the brakes and the abs light and asr lights came on but the brakes did not work. The passat was not going quickly and had safe stopping distance so the car had plenty of time to stop. The passat did not stop, hitting the car ahead of it.2. The brakes failed, causing the passat to rear-end the car in front of it. The driver of the other car sustained whiplash injuries and 600 usd to his car. He is in treatment with the cost of treatment undetermined at this time. The passat sustained 3000 usd in damage. The driver of the passat was not injured, was ticketed, lost half a day's wages in court, and does not trust his vehicle.3. The car was taken to the vw dealership, where it was determined that a brake light switch was determined to be electrically faulty. Malfunctions were stored in the abs control module. The brake light switch gave an implausible signal, sporadic. The brake light switch was diagnosed and replaced. The fault memory of the abs control module was erased and reset.the driver of the passat contacted vw asking about the fault(s) and expressing his doubt in the safety and reliability of the vehicle. The driver of the passat felt vw's defective parts caused the accident and vw should cover the cost. Vw's answer is that the defective parts could not have caused the accident. Tonight's paper has issued information about a recall of this part however, it does not include information about passats in this recall. Passats have this problem, too. We did not know about your organization or we would have contacted you months ago.

Brake light switch failed intermittently over a period of two years, finally failed completely.whenever the switch was operating poorly itkicked out the cruise control.

The brake light switch keeps failing.it causes the electronic stability control to be disabled and keeps the stop lights on, even when the brake pedal is not depressed.i've had the brake like switch replaced 6 times now over the past 2.5 years.

Cruise control and rear brake light failure on 2004 vw passat.

6/30 i drove my 2004 vw passat wagon. I had used the cruise control and had to slow down, i attempted to re-activate the cruise control, it would not respond. I tried again the following day and it worked. 7/3, i parked my car for an hour appt. I returned to my car to find the brake lights were on. I turned the car on, tapped the brakes and turned it off. The brake lights stayed on. I had to leave town for a few days and upon returning, called my dealer, ontario vw.7/9 i made an appt to service the car. Sylvia in service made the appt. She mentioned there was a recall on the brake light switch. After making the appt, i researched the recall. I found the nhtsa site. Nhtsa had a campaign id # 07v063000 for 6 makes of volkswagen, varying years, all for brake light switch malfunction. The description matched my problem exactly. Later on the 9th, i went to drop off my car for repair. I was checked in and told my car was not affected by the recall. Jose meza, senior service advisor, told me my vin # had no recall. I explained about the info i found and he said i was incorrect. He did not offer to research anything about it. My car is under warranty and will be repaired. My issue is with the handling of this situation and the lack of interest on the part of ontario vw and vw corp, whom i called to complain and was also told that my vin # did not reflect a recall. If 5 other vw makes have the same problem and are under recall, why am i being challenged about including my car in the recall? this is a serious safety issue as the brake lights can become inoperable without my knowledge.vehicle safety should be the priority for all manufacturers and dealerships and i am shocked at the lack of interest i am receiving from all i contact about this issue. Including the nhtsa that told me i could file a general complaint and possibly be included in a future recall but could not offer specific help with anything else.

I received a recall notice regarding my 2004 vw passat (replacing the brake light switch).i had my repairs completed at an authorized vw service center in october 2007 and sent my form to vw for reimbursement.i received a call on 1/10/08 informing me that the deadline for the repair was 9/23/07.the recall letter i received was dated september 2007 and did not indicate that there was a deadline for the repair.the vw customer care center is saying that they will not reimburse me for this repair.

On occasion the brake lights will stay on after car has been parked and turned off.the brake lights will also stay on with no foot pressure on the pedal while driving.

Known issue "vibrating headlamp assembly", despite numerous repairs at dealership continues to vibrate causing repeated headlamp bulb failure.especially dangerous when failure occurs while driving at night.

My complain is regarding the headlights on 2004 vw passat.i have own this car since nov 04 and feel very unsafe driving at night.the dim headlights are inadequate on this vehicle.i would estimate the dim may shine out appox 25 feet and then just cut off. I have taken the car back several times to the dealer with no results. Could you please advise me if there is a testing location, where i could take the car to see if the lights even meet your safety regulations.thank you.

I have a 2004 volkswagen passat 2.0l tdi diesel car.the high pressure fuel pump started leaking diesel fuel all over the engine compartment.i checked on-line to determine if there was a recall on this problem.after checking on-line i learned that there was in fact a recall for this problem.i contacted both volkswagen of america and a local dealer.both indicated that there was a recall, but that the vin number on my car was not included in this recall.i had to have the pump replaced at a cost of $750.00.i believe that the problem incurred is the same problem from the recall and that the defective part includes more than just the vin number vehicles that volkswagen admits.when i had the high pressure fuel pump replaced, i advised that i wanted to old pump.i have the old pump in my possession.i am concerned that there may be more vehicles than indicated in the recall that may have the same problem and the possible fire problems that could be caused.i believe that this repair should have been covered by volkswagon.

Engine started fine, and let it ran for a minute or two on drive way.then suddenly it died.computer screen displayed "stop",oils pressure can, and low oil pressure warning lights came on.

Dt*: the contact stated diesel fuel leaks onto the engine and the exhaust system.the dealership determined the diesel pump needed to be replaced.there is a nhtsa recall, # 04v586000, regarding the fuel system diesel.the vin was not included in the recall.the manufacturer has been alerted.

Re: odi 102887982004 passat tdiwhile moderately accelerating between 60 and 65 mph you experience a bump type of action, like being bumped slightly from the rear. I do not get the sensation that the transmission is hesitating or lurching.i took the car to the dealer and their diagnosis indicated a bad mass flow indicator (mfi), see odi 10288798. I stated that this was suppose to be the problem 6 months ago with a previous issue. The dealer replaced the mfi and stated the test drove the car and the problem did not recur. Upon leaving the dealer as i accelerated onto the interstate the problem did recur. I was able to replicate the problem numerous times. They must have test drove another car. I notified the dealer before i was 10 miles away that i would bring the car back.before leaving the dealership after the supposed repair i went over the list of vw passat tdi complaints. He assured me i do not have those problems. However, based on my previous experience and this repair work so far, i am not sure they really understand what the problem is let alone tell me i have no concern.the mfi just can not be the diagnosis cure all my problems and evidently it hasn't been either.

Fuel line leak in the engine compartment. Fuel line material was deformed and resulted in a small hole where fuel was spraying directly on the turbo, cat and related exhaust components. Vehicle continued to run and did not shut down or show signs of a fuel leak.

I filled my gas tank up on a friday and drove it home and parked it in the driveway and the next day noticed a fairly large puddle of gasoline under my car. I took it to my local car shop and they told me that it was the fuel line that was leaking and that he called a volkswagen dealership and they had told him that there was a recall on that exact part of the car. I was told to call volkswagen and see if they would be able to fix the issue and they told me that the recall was already fixed by the previous owner of my car. If it was already fixed then the same problem shouldn't be happening again.

I was driving on hwy 101 in san luis obispo county california when my call stalled in the fast lane. My fuel pump went out. I have a 2004 vw passat. The 2003 passat's fuel pumps were recalled jan 2006 and august 2007. After my car was made which makes me wonder why my cars fuel pump wasn't recalled since it was made after recall date.

2004 volkswagen passat 4motion, the fuel tank rollover/vent valve on the top of the tank has cracked and is leaking gasoline onto the exhaust system. The tank was filled up on 2/22/2015 and started leaking large amounts of fuel from the top of the tank over the exhaust. This continued until the tank reached 3/4 full. If the fuel tank is filled above 3/4 it will leak fuel until it gets to 3/4. If the vehicle is parked with the front downhill, it continues to leak beyond the 3/4 point. This failure was part of a previous vw 2008 nhtsa mandated recall 08v156000, but only required dealer inspection of the rollover/vent valve and not replacement of the fuel tank with a functional part, if it was not leaking when inspected then do nothing. The rollover/vent is integral to the vw passat awd tank, and the complete fuel tank has to be replaced. Vw claim as the car was inspected in 2008,they are not responsible for the subsequent failure of the rollover/vent valve.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that the fuel system was leaking. The contact later received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 08v156000 (fuel system) and had the vehicle repaired under the recall. The contact stated that the fuel system continued to leak after the recall repair. The contact was not satisfied with the remedy provided in the recall. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

1. On the evening of friday october 24, 2008 my check engine light began flashing and the car started running rough. 2. On the morning of saturday october 25, 2008 i brought the car to southpoint volkswagen in baton rouge, la.they diagnosed the problem as a faulty #4 engine coil. They replaced the coil, tested the car and returned it to me.the car seemed to function properly and the check engine light remained off. 3. The next day, sunday october 26, 2008, after driving only 28 miles, the check engine light started flashing and the car began running rough again.i immediately pulled off the road into a gas station.at this time i noticed smoke coming out from under the hood.i opened the hood to find a fire near the lower part on the passenger side of the engine compartment.we extinguished the fire and had the car towed back to southpoint volkswagen. 4. Southpoint replaced the other 3 coils and other parts that were damaged by the fire. 5. Friday, october 31, 2008 southpoint vw made arrangements to meet in orange, tx, to return my passat and pick up the rental car.after this exchange, and approximately 15 minutes of driving time, the check engine light came on and was steady. 6. I then learned that the check engine light was caused by an issue with the emission system.the coil failure allowed unburned gas to go into the exhaust system damaging the the catalytic converter.vw has acknowledged that this is what happened but has refused to repair the damage to my emission system.diagnostic test at the time of the coil replacement show that the exhaust system was functioning properly prior to the fire.

While stopped at light, car stalled and would not start. Fuel pump failed. Dealer replaced fuel pump to fix problem. Very similar to 07v375000 but for 2004 model passat.

2004 vwpassat 4-motion wagon with 1.8t engine.top of fuel tank is leaking at the point where a breather hose connects (which is under the left rear seat).replaced breather hose.gas continues to leak out.the connection point itself is cracked and a new fuel tank is required.this must be a design flaw or defect. The car has little over 71,000 miles.car is out of warranty.i am original owner.no unusual or hard impacts to the car (it has only scrapes from anonymous, unscrupulous bad drivers in parking lots).vw of america refuses to cover the cost for replacement (conversation with customer care department representative "nina" on july 6, 2010).this is a very dangerous defect or flaw.raw gas should not spill out of car -- particularly in this location, under a passenger's seat.volkswagen should post a recall and replace this part with a safer tank.

A change in the electrical motor components in the fuel pump led to an inoperative fuel pump and, ultimately, stoppage of fuel supply to the engine causing it to stall while on the highway.

Purchased a used 2004 vw passat glx 4motion with 91k miles and no accident or damage history per carfax..first fill of the gas tank revealed a severe leak of greater than 180 drops per minute.the leak occurred at all times with the car running or turned off and the key removed.the leak stopped after the gas gauge moved below f.removed rear seat and noticed fuel wetting on the exterior of the tank adjacent to the fuel level sensor.using a mirror fuel was visible coming from the vent boss adjacent to the fuel level sensor.this exact issue is covered under vwoa recall 26e5/r5 nhtsa campaign # 08v156000.i contacted vw customer service and they informed me my vehicle vin [xxx] is not eligible however they did not say why.the carfax report states that a heat shield was replaced 8/11/2008.recall 26e5/r5 involves a heat shield as well as the fuel tank.it's possible the tank was ok at the time. If the vehicle has already had the recall and the fuel tank developed the problem after is there any recourse under this recall?information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Fuel line broke and leaked gas onto the hot exhaust system. The fuel leak was from a fuel hose on the firewall. The fuel lines are leaking in several other areas underneath the car.

Identical to 07v375000, but 2004 not 2003 model year1. None 2. First time. 3. Towed car to dealer, identified broken fuel pump. 3a. Replacing fuel pump.

I havea 2004 vw passat w8 4-motion and i filled the tank the other day and parked the car in the garage overnight and when i opened the interior garage door in the morning the fumes were so strong i evacuated my wife and 4 month old baby form the house. This has happened 2 times, both were when i filled the fuel tank. I called the dealer and they said there was a recall that added a heat shield and inspected the 4 motion vw passat purge/rollover valve. They stated that the heat shield was replaced but did not show the valve being replaced. I called vw and they stated that the vehicle was out of warranty and is no longer covered. I am very concerned for my family's safety especially since i live in a 3 story town-home and the garage is at the bottom of our main floor. I would like the car inspected asap.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that the vehicle was being serviced for maintenance when he was informed that the fuel system was leaking. The contact was unsure if the vehicle was listed under nhtsa campaign number: 08v156000 (fuel system). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. Driving along came up to a stop sign and car sputtered then dies and could not be restarted towed to dealer. Advised of bad fuel pump. $800.00 for repair. Same as several other 2004 complaints and checking to see if this should be tied to the 2003 recall.

Fuel tank ventilation valve is leaking fuel.vw dealer refused to fix it under the existing recall: nhtsa campaign id number:08v156000 nhtsa action number:pe08008 i have vw passat 2004 gls 4 motion w/manual transmission.

Our 2004 volkswagen passat fuel pump failed at around 52,000 miles which caused our car to stop dead in the road. Luckily it wasn't on a high traffic road. Since there was a fuel pump recall in 2003 for passats, how do i know that one of those fuel pumps did not end up in our car? when we had the dealership replace the fuel pump, the first one they put in was defective. I asked the dealership for the original part , which i have. The part number is 8e0 906 087e . Please advise. Thank you.

Fuel began leaking from the top of the fuel tank after fill up.my daughter was heading back to college, and as she pulled away i noticed a large puddle of gasoline in the street.nhtsa had previously recalled the vehicle in 2008 (26e5/r5) action number (pe08008).vw dealer inspected and installed heat shield.no fuel leak at this time.in september 2012 fuel tank began leaking, vw dealer replaced the fuel tank, washer, gasket and clamp under the recall.in september 2014 i brought car back to vw dealer, and they said they are only responsible to fix the car once.fed up with vw, i brought car to my local mechanic, and upon inspection he found the nipples on the fuel tank rollover valve were again cracked.i had him replace the tank.obviously vw didn't properly fix the problem, and or replaced the tank with the same defective design and the tank cracked again.this is a very serious safety issue, and i feel that vw should pay for this repair. If it was done right and corrected, the tank would not be leaking again after less than 2 years, and 20,000 miles. This could have caused a fire with my daughter in the car, and that is very upsetting to me.

While driving at approx 70 mph on the interstate the car stalled our and would not start.it was determined that the fuel pump had gone out.the car had 58k miles.this happened just three weeks after an engine coil had to be replaced.i no longer own a vw.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. While driving approximately 55 mph the vehicle stalled. The vehicle would not restart and it was towed to an independent mechanic where he was informed that the fuel pump failed and was repaired. The failure and current mileages were 60,000.

No real warning--my wife was driving our passat and the engine stalled.attempts at restarting the vehicle failed.i am thankful that my wife was in a parking lot instead of a busy highway.the vehicle was towed to the nearest dealership where they informed me that the fuel pump was at fault.i had to pay over $500.00 for replacement of the fuel pump.what's more frustrating is that a recall was apparently ordered for this same problem on 2003 model year passats (see nhtsa campaign id number 07v375000).

We receive a recall letter from vw june 2008, a week after we shipped our vw passat to greece for us to use while we are in greece. When i came home i open my mail and found the recall letter. I immediately fax it to greece for my husband to take it to the dealership to fix the recall problem. When the dealership corrected the problem i received an invoice from them with an itemized description. ( i know a few of the corrected item are not in the recall letter which i do not expect them to pay). They call me and told me that it would take 4 to 6 weeks for them to process the invoice because they had to send it for translation.several weeks go by and they call me and said that some of the items in the invoice were not part of the recall and they would not pay me which i agree, but the rest it would take about another 3 weeks.now it is 3 months and i called them, they said non of the things ihad corrected were in the recall letter according to the translator.i tried to tell yes it is and i ask them to call the dealership to find out, but they refuse and they refuse to reimburse me for the work.i feel that this is outrageous.i would something tobe done.thank you

Engine malfunction indicator light stays on, musfire in cylinder # 3 since january of 2005, car at dealer for service repeatedly for same problem.so far no resolution.car will not pass inspectiond due to problem

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat.the contact noticed rust had formed in the filler neck of the fuel system.the dealer stated that this was not covered under warranty and was unable to determine the cause of failure.the current mileage is 40,000 and failure mileage was 24,000.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that while he was away, he left the vehicle parked in an airport parking garage. The vehicle was later impounded by the police due to fuel leakage in while it was parked. The police reported that the vehicle was not safe to be parked in the garage. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed that a heat shield that may contact the exhaust system could result in a vehicle fire. In addition, a fuel leak from a fuel line or the fuel tank ventilation valve in the presence of an ignition source could lead to a vehicle fire. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicl was not included in the recalls associated with nhtsa campaign id numbers 08v156000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery) and 04v586000 (fuel system, diesel). The failure and current mileages were 83,529.

Vehicle: 2004 vw passat 4motion sedan w/1.8l turbo, automatic transmissionfilled vehicles fuel tank, noticed strong gasoline smell inside vehicle, noticed fuel dripping from fuel tank of vehicle to ground. Cannot fill tank without gas dripping to ground; fuel leak is next to exhaust system underneath vehicle (very dangerous). Found following information: manufacturer: volkswagen of america, incsummary:volkswagen is recalling 412,000 my 1999-2005 passat (5th generation) vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions and produced after june 14, 1999. These vehicles may have an underbody heat shield that can become damaged. In addition, affected vehicles with automatic or manual transmissions may have a fuel line (1.8t engines only) or fuel tank ventilation valve (4motion/all wheel drive only) that can leak due to fracture.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. After refueling and parking the vehicle, the contact later discovered fuel had leaked out from the vehicle onto the floor of the garage. Fuel was also visible underneath the rear seat of the vehicle. Upon inspection, the contact discovered that fuel was leaking from the fuel valve. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but the local dealer was not notified. The failure mileage was 160,000.

Strong odor of fuel in the car regardless of being parked or moving. Noticed puddle of gas on the ground under the fuel tank. Fuel was dripping down off the fuel tank and the heat shields. Followed drip to the rollover valve nipple which is attached to the gas tank.

The car died as i was driving down a city road,i was able to veer the car to the side of the road as it was rolling before it stopped completely. I had the car towed back to my house and after testing all components, it was determined that the car wasn't getting any fuel due a faulty fuel pump.

My gas gauge is not working and i always smeel gas while riding in my car.

We have begun to notice the smell of fuel in the cabin of our car.the smell occurs when the car is full of gas; otherwise, with a half tank of gas, there are no odors.the car is a 2004 volkswagen passat gls 1.8t 4motion with the 5 speed automatic.vw has made no promises to remedy this issue.

The car stalled in the road. Pulled over. Turned the car off and it would not restart full tank of gas.

Gas tank/ fuel line fracture, leaking gas when i fill it up, strong gas smell/odor.stops leaking at around 3/4 tank.very dangerous for my 16 year old to drive.vw dealership refused to correct, wants to charge me 2600, to fix i bought the car for 4200 3 months ago.

Leaking at vent/top of gas tank. Exactly the same description of that past heat sheild/vent gas leaking recall from about 10 years ago

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. While pumping fuel into the vehicle, the strong odor of fuel was present. In addition, while driving 35 mph, the odor was still present. The failure recurred constantly. The dealer diagnosed that the fuel tank ventilation valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.

Gas fuel line/tank leaking gas

Flashing engine lamp/mil light, violent shaking, loss of engine power, foul odor, misfiring, pinging.

Fueltank leak. There is no damage no impact no visible evidence of any misuse of car.fuel tank leaks when filled above 3/4 ofa tank.this is unsafe and very dangerous this should be repaired by volkswagen.in all my life as a mechanic i have never seen anything this unsafe. If my loved ones were to get hurt i will hold volkswagen accountable.this needs to fixed now!..

When you fill up the fuel tank it leaks it leaks a quarter of a tank of fuel roughly 4 to 5 gallons of fuel drip out there's a factory recall on this issue i took it to the volkswagen dealer paid money to have them inspect it and they said yes it's leaking at the factory recall i've had an independent dealer confirm that! volkswagen will not do anything due to what they claim a remedy was done by moving fuel lines 10 years ago, obviously it was not or i would not have 4 gallons of fuel spill in my driveway vehicle is basically in operable and they want $3000 to put a new fuel tank in when it's a factory recall which never expires i have talk to the volkswagen rep and the only thing i have found in forums is do you have to go to volts wagon of america and fight them and this is ridiculous when they know they have an issue!! to drive this vehicle we never fill it over a half a tank of fuel so we do not leak fuel or explode while we're driving hopefully please help in anyway you can thank you

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that while traveling speeds, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the fuel pump and injectors had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage and vin was not available.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The vehicle was repaired according to nhtsa campaign number: 08v156000 (fuel system, gasoline); however, the contact could smell a strong odor of fuel when the vehicle was parked. A local mechanic stated that the fuel tank ventilation valve fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 70,000.

While test driving a volkswagon passat glx sedan, touching the window control caused the abs braking mechanism to engage. The car lurched as if the brakes were quickly applied and abs failure warning lights and tones went off in the car. The instrument lights flickered as well. The warnings shut off in a few seconds and the car appeared to return to normal. This happened on two seperate occasions in the span of 10 minutes both times while traveling on a level road at a constant speed with my foot on the accelerator at the time. The situation was dangerous because of the unintended braking and the startling effect of the warnings occuring simultaniously.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat.the contact started the ignition.suddenly, the front driver side door unlatched without assistance.the door failed to secure in a closed position.whenever the power lock was engaged the door opened. The failure occurred intermittent. The authorized dealer was notified of the malfunction.the vehicle is in the process of being repaired.the contact had concern of the safety risk involved.the current and failure mileages were 120,000.the vin was rejected from the system which will be updated upon receipt of the safety complaint filing.

Power train issue:bad torque converter (tc). Why a safety issue? it can fail while on the highway sending debris into the transmission causing a catastrophic failure.caused by a bad seal gasket.technical bulletin # 2011908 address the issue in 2007.but the tdis were not included in the tb [same tc & transmission], and this is a very common problemin many vw, audi and bmw vehicles, including tdis. Sporadically the rear windows would not respond to thewindow up/down switch, then later without touching the switch the windows would open or close.the dealer found a cheap plastic cotter pin type instrument causing the problem. I have not had the chance to check out the repair since the dealer has my car going on 3 weeks for two other issues (transmission surge and engine light/p0101) for which they are having problems diagnosing the problem.

I have a 2004 vw passat with a safety issue in transmission. When accelerating from a stop or low speed the car hesitates and then jumps.the problem is most severe in reverse gear. The dealership has no resolution. After changing multiple parts the problem still occurs. I have talked with other 2004 passat and touareg owners and they have the same complaint, so it appears to be affecting more than a single vehicle. Can the nhtsa do somthing to help vw owners by forcing vw to acknowledge this issue and find a resolution before someone gets hurt.right now their dealers and engineers do not have a fix!

Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the automatic transmission had a sluggish response while shifting gears.additionally, while driving uphill, the vehicle operated at a reduced speed.the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who was unable to duplicate the problem.the manufacturer was alerted.

I bought the car new in october 2003,i noticed intermittent jerking of the transmisssion especially when slowing, accelerating slightly and then coming to a stop. The jerking is surprising and uncomfortable, but has not yet caused an accident.i had the car into the dealer for 9 days in march.they were able to reproduce the problem ,but had no way to fix it.i have been told it was a software problem and that a fix would be available: first in may, then in june, and now still no fix.

Transmission on 2004 vw passat hard downshifts from 5th to 4th at 30 mph when transmission is warm. First occurred at 90k miles.took to two vw dealerships both indicated catastrophic transmission failure that they would be happy to repair for $4000.didn't fix, researched web and found this a common problem with vw transmissions.called vw, they knew about it but didn't care since it is out of warranty.

When coming to a complete stop or while cruising, the vehicle lurches forward.the dealer recalibrated the computer chip in the accelerator pedal and also replaced the transmission control module.after the repairs, the problem continued. *ph the transmission made a clunk noise, malfunctioned in heavy traffic/highway, and a hard shift was present at times. *sc

I have a 2004 vw passat with a safety issue in the transmission. When i accelerate at slow speeds it hesitates before taking off and then bam, it's like some one hit you in the back of the car and the car jumps in gear. It does not happen all the time. But the transmission seems real slow going into first gear and it does with a clunk.

Automatic transmission hard downshifts from 5th to 4th.took to dealership to investigate.they claimed transmission needed replacing.called manufacturer to request they take ownership of issue. They declined any responsibility but did not deny issue.transmissions in modern cars rarely break pointing towards a manufacturing defect or design flaw. Safety hazard is that the transmission could break, lock up or seize and cause an accident.

Automatic transmission lurched on down shift when coming to a stop. While driving at any speed momentary hesitationparticularly in anintersection. The dealership has inspected on several times and could not duplicate or correct the problem. Please provide further information.dealership corrected the problem with vehicle and consumer wished to rescind report from complaint database. *mjj

I own a 2004 vw passat wagon v-6 and thereis a problem with the transmission. The car bucks/jumps when decelerating into lower or accelerating into higher gear.it causes jerking of the vehicle at times. Dealer checked the car on two different occasions but claimed that it found nothing wrong when a systems checked was run.dealer was unable to replicate the problem on a test ride.contacted vw to no avail.*la

My transmission on a 2004 passat wagon all wheel drive (v6) engine slips and startles me very frequently. When the vehicle is slowed down it bucks violently as if i was rear ended by another vehicle. So far, volkswagon gave me a replacement car (since it was a brand new car). However, the replacement car is doing the very same thing. This problem is potentially dangerous because it feels as if you're being rear ended. Also, it creates a potential danger on the roads. Volkswagon originally said it was the all wheel drive (but this is simply not the case). Now, they're saying the transmission needs to be "flashed"? i will be filing a lemon law complaint against the company. I fear that many other vehicles have the same problem and they're being ignored or swept under the carpet. I would really hope that someone in your organization would investigate this complaint and will bring this potentially serious problem to the attention of volkswagon. At at minimum perhaps, they should recall these vehicles and send out a notice to owners of this vehicle type. Please plead my cause with vigor and determination. Sincerely, david deboskey*la

When slowing down at traffic light car hesitated and then jerked foward, as if i had been hit from behind. It was enough to make my back and neck sore. I touched the accelerator pedal to give the car some gas and the engine freely revved, even thought the transmission indicated it was in 'drive'. The car has developed a hesitation to accelrate before the incident, and after. The car has also been showing signs of excessive fuel consumption.

2005 passat wagon - 38000 milesblocked drains around the sunroof caused rain water to leak into the floor boards of the car.the build-up of water caused the tcm (transmission control module) to malfunction.the (automatic) car was able to be driven only with hard shifts between gears and now will not move out of park. (undrivable).replacement of the tcm will cost $3210.the car was a garaged car up until a few months ago.it was at the dealership for all scheduled maintenance.i was told by the dealership that the drain tubes can get clogged with "one leaf" and the next rain can cause this problem.i was advised to park in a covered area and never drive in the rain.this seems like a significant design flaw that one leaf followed by any rain can cause the tcm to fail and need replacing.

Just about evrery time i drive my car there seems to be a lurching in the transmission when i start drivingand when i start to slow down(5-15mph).the dealer(cooley mazda, vw in east greenbush,ny) said there was no problem, but after checking with your site i found out i wasn't alone. Any help would be great.

- the contactownsa 2004 volkswagen passat.the contact stated that theheating seat malfunctioned.the heating coil burned a hole in the seat, and burned the contact's leg.the driver's front seat had a silver dollar size hole in it, with a wire sticking out of the seat. The vehicle's seat began smoking and she turned off the car immediately.the contact planned to take the vehicle to the dealeron 02-09-07.also, the contact had a recurring problem with the transmission.the contact stated that usually when drivingat 55 mph on the highway, and as she began braking the car jerked or threwthe contact as if someone haad rear ended her.the contact stated that thishappened at least once a week.she had taken the car to the dealer because they were not driving on the highway they were not able to duplicate the failure.in both instances neither weather nor speed werefactors.

2004 volkswagen passat: failure of transmission control module located under passenger seat in floor board due to manufacturer defect. Caused by water into vehicle after heavy rain. Volkswagen has known of this problem since 2000 and has failed to make changes. Failure of the control unit has the potential to cause a fatal accident should the transmission shift gears during highway driving or a high rate of speed.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that water has accumulated in the sun roof and over time the water has leaked down to the transmission module causing the transmission to malfunction.the contact took the vehicle to a dealer and the dealer stated the transmission module needs to be replaced.the contact stated this is a known issue for this year make and model.the contact stated the manufacturer should issue a recall for the sun roof. The failure mileage was 100,000. The vin was unavailable.

2004 passat with 4wd, car jumps forward when coming to a halt, clearly a safety hazard but nhtsa seems unwilling to accept the complaint. I have entered it three times without it showing up on the list. I guess campaign money talks louder than consumers.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact stated that he discovered water inside the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the sunroof was disengaged. The manufacturer advised the contact that there was an open recall on the vehicle under an unknown recall campaign and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for repairs. In addition, the contact stated the vehicle was exhibiting an abnormal jerking sensation when driving at various speeds. The dealer replaced the soiled carpeting and noticed extensive water damage to the transmission module, which was also replaced. The contact stated that the jerking persisted when attempting to switch gears. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer however, the dealer was unable to locate a failure within the vehicle.the failure persisted until the transmission failed. The dealer refused to replace the transmission. The manufacturer offered no assistance. The vehicle was repaired at the contact's expense. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000 and the current mileage was approximately 102,000.updated 1/19/2010 updated 01/27/11

While driving on the highway between 60-70 mphvehicle will down shift.when sitting in trafficvehicle will surge forward. Consumer was very concerned. Contacted the manufacturer. When driving 65 the vehicle will upshift or downshift on its own.*tc

When the vehicle was being slowed downthe gears would slaminto place.also when trying to accelerate, the vehicle didnt respond immediately.this problem has occurred at least thirty times since buying the vehicle in march.the dealer is aware of the problem and vw america is working on a solution.

Vehicle transmission lurches forward when slowing to a stop. Vehicle purchased on 12/9/03. Problem occurred on 3/3/04.dealer replaced the transmission control module. Problem has reoccurred on 5/20/04. Dealer states they are aware of the problem and are awaiting "software update" from volkswagen. They have no anticipated date from volkswagen on the correction.*mr

When slowing to a stop transmission/drive train occasionally will demonstrate a jarring and potentially dangerous "clunk" as if the trandmission is dropping out of the car. The car also lurches forward slightly.we have read that some dealers tell their customers the problem is due to a faulty transmission control module.our dealer, russel vw in catonsville md said they could do nothing, denying ever hearing about the problem.we contacted vw-usa and they said they had no knowledge of such a problem.this is clearly untrue!!!there are complaints of this problem all over the internet.vw is setting itself up for tremendous liability issues should injuries occur because of this problem.

Transmission on car "shudders" when accelerating between 50 mph and 75 mph creating unsafe distraction and performance liability.

There is a problem with the transmission. The car shifts sharply in lower gears causing severe jerking of the vehicle at times.dealer "rebooted" the control module but no change.the mechanic at the dealership let it slip that they were aware of this problem and that there is no solution at this time.i can't believe they sold the car knowing of this problem.i contacted vw and complained to the dealership. I was offered 2 months of free loan payments by vw.i recently received a call from the dealership saying that the software problem has been fixed. I am taking car in this week.

Water cominginto front passenger seat resulting in damages to the tcm (transmission control module), wet carpeting, and rust under the passenger seat. The transmission module failure resulted in vehicle not able to shift into higher gear, and delay acceleration.the tcm and carpeting was replaced.

The tcm (transmission control module) failed due to a leak, that is a common problem ,i now find out $1300.00 later on this 2004 glx passat.after searching for 4 months for a tcm i learn that this isan on going problem 2001-2004, that vwhasn't addressed ,but is aware of due to the configuration of a drainage system that causes water to enter the passenger floor board and fry this tcm .which could result in an injuryor further damage to the vehicle, due to transmission shifting suddenly and unexpectedly into 3rd gear.

Automatic transmission lurched on downshift when coming to a stop.dealer replaced the transmission control module...problem has not yet been duplicated again, but it has only been a day.

1.my wife was driving the car (2004 volkswagen passat gls, 1.8 l turbo), and it felt like it was having trouble shifting from first gear to subsequent gears.it was sudden, not gradual by any means - the car just started to hesitate when shifting, and the mil lamp was lit...this happened in heavy traffic in the detroit suburbs - not an ideal time to not be able to accelerate.2.the transmission was replaced under my powertrain warranty (it's my opinion that this was an unnecessary replacement).upon further investigation, it was found that there was a water leak in the vehicle, and the passenger side floorboard was filled with water, inundating the transmission control module.it turns out that this damaged the module, and effectively rendered the car is not able to be driven.3.the transmission control module is being replaced, as well as a "seal" that caused the water intrusion (i haven't been able to get out of them which seal was replaced - this can be addressed with a follow-up).

Purchased 12/03. Within 2 weeks began to shift abnormally slamming in/out of 1-2nd gears.drove technicians 3 times before they would admit something wrong. Unplugged transmission module - no fix, replaced module - no fix, then admitted they have software programming problem and engineers are working on it - no fix right now.has been 6 mos of poor shifting, now likely transmission damaged, still no fix available.*la

(1) slight pulsation was felt in clutch pedal. Assumed clutch release bearing failed.2) took car to dealer who claimed the clutch failed prematurely and damaged the flywheel as well. (3) had car repaired by dealer. Clutch apparently is not covered under warranty after 12000 miles.

While driving 60 mph clutch failed. Vehicle lost power. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Clutch and flywheel had to be replaced on 2004 passat wagon with only 45k miles.

Clutch failed three times since the vehicle was purchased. Consumer first had it replaced at 3000 miles.the second time at 30,000 miles, and then at 40,000 miles.

The car stalled in the road. Pulled over. Turned the car off and it would not restart full tank of gas.

My car 2004vw passatalmost gett on firefront passander seat have start to burnbut was ok after i shutt off the car after that now i can drive but the seat its demaged

2004 vw passat gl 1.8t with 94,000 miles. Drivers side seat heater has burned through seat and into my leg while driving with seat heat in use on setting #3. There is now a hole in drivers seat where burn occurred.

1)my heated seats got so hot they burned a hole in my seat and burned my leg. I'm not sure how that happened without me noticing, but it did.the burn was not severe but it did hurt for a day or two.2.the seats continue to get that hot when turned on.... I no longer use the heated seat function.3.nothing has been done yet, i will have to buy a new seat cushion, new cloth for the seat and have someone fix the heated seat.

Heated seats on driver side stopped working only to find seat had smoldered a fire beneath me!was there a recall on these seats!?

While driving my vehicle, the driver's seat caught fire causing a hole to be burnt through the leather seats caused scorching to pants and a minor burn to the buttocks. A moderate amount of smoke was seen coming from the burning seat and filled the interior of the car. I immediately turned off the seat warmer, pulled the vehicle over, and turned off the engine.the seat continued to smoke profusely; i smothered the fire and contacted my local vw dealership immediately. The local dealership advised me to contact vw of america; the entire process has been a complete hassle and i am now without a vehicle while vw of america "investigates" the issue. My two young children and i were in the vehicle at the time; they became extremely upset and scared. Fortunately, this incident happened prior to my getting on the freeway (i commute 45 minutes each way for school). Had my seat caught fire while driving at highway speeds in heavy traffic i don't know that i would be alive to write this complaint. Words cannot describe the surprise and panic i felt when the seat began to burn me; to call this a safety hazard would be a gross understatement.this malfunction/defect is one that has the potential to cause great bodily harm and/or death should it happen under the above stated circumstances (highway driving, highway speeds, and heavy traffic). It is my opinion that a recall should be made to protect additional consumers from this hazard. I am extremely upset with vw and the seemingly casual attitude regarding this issue; as a consumer i feel vw has a duty to ensure the safety of their consumers-a seat that can catch fire at any time is a breach of that duty. I feel that some warning, at the very least, should have been issued to the consumer pertaining to this issue.

While driving on a highway, the driver seat suddenly overheated (the seat warmer was turned on). It started with a burning smell. Excessive heat burned my leg a bit (some skin redness), before i realized what is happening and turned the seat warmer off. The seat leather now appears stiff and wrinkled (not soft and smooth like the rest of the leather) in the area where i felt the heat.

Started car up for morning commute and turned on the driver side seat warmer to 5.5 minutes into the commute a smoke smell filled the cabin.when i arrived at my destination i found that the seat heater had burned a dime size hole through my cloth seat.i am the original owner of the vehicle and have not had an issue since taking possession on 2/14/04.when i mentioned this to the dealer they sounded a bit surprised and stated that they would have to investigate if this would be covered under warranty or not.

My car was part of a recall because the drivers side seat heater was overheating and melting through the seat. I took my car in for the recall and this issue should have been resolved. But yesterday i had that exact issue - within 4 to 5 minutes of turning on my drivers side seat heater it burned/melted through the seat and burned me.

I was driving my car, a 2004 vw passat gls, to work in the morning and had the driver's side seat heater on.about 2 miles into my drive i could smell that something was burning.at first i thought it was something burning outside, so i rolled the windows down to see if the outside air smelled of smoke.the outside air did not smell of smoke, so i quickly started thinking of what else could be burning.i also had the cabin air heat on, so i decided to turn that off and also turned my seat heater off, which is when i noticed smoke coming up from the driver's seat.i identified the location as the left part of the seat bottom and saw the burning area, which was clearly being cause by a heating component of the seat heater.i was trying to put out the smoldering and smoke with my hands.i could tell that my leather seats were still smoldering/burning so i put water on my hands from a water bottle that i had nearby to cool the leather and prevent further spread of the smoldering.note that this was all within approximately 10 seconds, and i was driving.this is a huge hazard for which vw should be held responsible.

Heated seat coils overheated and burnt seat on driver side.

A coil for heated seats has melted a hole in the driver's side seat. This caused pain and confusion while driving on the highway. The seat now has an ugly melted hole in it.

The seat warmer on the driver's side started a fire that burnt through the seat and onto my leg.i had to pull over on the highway and turn off the car for it to stop burning.

Driver's heated leather seat burned leather seat and my skin.

While driving my 2004 vw passat, my heated driver's seat burned a hole through the seat and burned my leg, though no personal injury occurred.

2004 volkswagen passat tdi - seat heater wire in passenger seat, side bolster ignited seat material. No open flame - polyester material smoldered, producing a dime-sized hole, through which the red-hot wire could be seen. Caused passenger discomfort, spread smell of smoke throughout cabin, alarmed passengers and drivers. No medical attention required.

1. The car had not been used for 4 hours prior to the event and the seat warmers had been used on high earlier in the day with no incident. The car was turned on and the seat was pulled back and then forward to adjust. 2.the car seat heaters were on level 5 and within one minute a very strong burning odor was present and smoke was coming from somewhere around me. I looked around and discovered it was the left side of the drivers seat. I turned off the seat heater and tried to wet the area to prevent the lesather from melting but it was too late and a hole about the size of a cigarette was burned into the seat from the inside.

Heated driver seat burned through seat cover and the occupants coat before smoke and heat alerted occupant to turn off the seat. Occupant turned off the heated seat and exited the vehicle to clear smoke. Initial reaction of dealer was to schedule service one week out due to their scheduled volume of service business next week, as if burning seats are a common occurrence.

Driver seat heater shorted out and burned a hole in the leather of the car seat.manufacturer would not replace.

The heated drivers seat in my 2004 vw passat caught on fire and burned through my wife's jeans.this occurred after driving only 1/4 mile. She felt something on her leg and when she looked down there was smoke coming out of the seat.she stopped and got the fire out, but it had burned her(left a red markon her leg),her jeans and put a hole in the seat.the local vw dealer was contacted and made aware of the problem and they are replacing the defective parts on the driver seat.however, when questioned about the passenger seat being defective, it was explained that they have only had a problem with the driver seat.i would think that they used the same materials in both seats and that the reason there has not been a problem with the passenger seat is due to the possibility that it is not used as much.the potential danger if this is not corrected could be significant.i have been in contact with vw customer service and they are going to be contacting me back.

Wife was driving 2004 vw passat sedan with heated seats turned on.shefelt a sharp burning in the side of her leg that slowly intensified.as she looked down at her leg she saw flames coming out from a dime sized hole.the seat was damaged and her leg was burned.

Turned on seat heater to 1 while waiting for car to warm up. Noticed a burning smell and felt a hot burning sensation on my buttocks. Turned off seat heater and got out of the car. There was a 5/8' hole burnt through the seat with some smoke still coming out of it. The seat heater had been on less than 1 minute. Will contact dealer later today to resolve the issue. Cw.

After starting my 2004 vw passat with the heated seat turned to 2 (on a 1-5 dial) i started to smell a burning smell almost immediately. After driving about 30 seconds i started to feel a sharp pain in the bottom of my upper leg. After driving about 45 more seconds smoke started to surround me coming up from the seat. At this point i pulled the vehicle over and got out. I could see a spot on my seat smoldering and smoking. I turned off my heated seat and the smoking stopped and the seat cooled off in about another 1-2 minutes. There remained a hole resembling a cigarette burn and the upholstery around it was melted. When i called the dealership, i was told not to use the heated seat on either side of the vehicle. I was also informed that the passenger seat would not be fixed and that there was no guarantee that this would not happen again.

Seat heater on driver's seat got extremely hot.burned driver's skin but not through the leather.smelled of smoke.dealership stated multiple problems with seat heaters catching fire, yet no recall.dealer will be happy to replace seat/heater at my expense since out of warranty.

This morning, i started my car to head out to do some errands.since it was cold, i waited for the car to warm up, and as i did, i turned my seat warmer on to level one (the highest is level five) and as i waited for my car to warm up, i noticed a burning smell and saw smoke.i got out of the car, turned off the motor, and found that the seat warmer had burnt a small hole in the seat, and had begun to burn my pants as well.there was no flame, but it was quite distressing.i am awaiting word from the dealer (since it is sunday and they are closed) but i thought this should go on record.

An incident occured today, march 24th, 2004 where the seat heater in my 2004 vw passat burned through my seat.i noticed it was hot and turned it off, and then smelt a buring smell.when i got to work i saw the small burn hole in my seat, which looked like a cigarette burn.after contacting the dealer they said that if it happens on the passenger seat after my warranty has expired that i would be liable for the cost of the replacement seat.while my clothes were not burned, my skin did have a sunburn like burn in that area.

The seat heater on the driver side of my car began to burn through the leather seat.it burned the leather on the seat, my trousers and left thigh.

A couple minutes after turning on my heated driver's seat, i felt something stinging my left leg.shortly after, i began to smell a burning smell, and smoke entered the cabin.i could not pull over as i was on a busy street.i put my hand down there and felt a hole in the seat and the heat of the wire.i turned the heated seats off, and pulled over to inspect the seat.with the seat heater on i could see the light of a wire burning in there through a dime-sized burn hole.

Started car, heated seat setting was on 1 (lowest setting).one of the heaters must of shorted, i felt something on the side of my thigh right away but didn't see anything.within one minute, noticed burning smell, smoking.looked down, saw smoke and small flame.immediately turned off seat heater, jumped out of car.seat had burn hole size of silver dollar and was hot in that area only.since it was christmas, i couldn't take it back to the dealership until the next day.when i got into car later, even though seat heater was off, i got a small shock when i started car.car is still under warranty and dealership has been very helpful and was quite concerned, but can't replace parts right away (parts had to be back ordered from germany).they disconnected the heaters for me because i prefer driving my car around instead of the rental they offered.but will not be replacing passenger heating element for me.

My seat warmer on my 2004 volkswagen passat 1.8 turbo was turned to a setting of "2".after just two minutes i smelled something burning and felt a burning sensation on my leg.i looked down and the seat warmer had burnt a two inch whole through my cloth seats, and burnt my jeans as well.it also left a small burn on my leg, like someone had bumped me with a cigarette.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat.while driving for two minutes with the seat heater activated, the driver's seat caught fire.the contact sustained moderate injuries.prior to the failure, the vehicle was repaired according to the manufacturer's recall for the seats: heating system.she called the dealer and is in the process of having the vehicle repaired.the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown.the failure and current mileages were 55,000. Updated 5/26/09updated 05/28/09.

The plastic underdash cowling can become warped over time and fall down on the brake pedal causing the car to stop or trigger the abs system when not needed.

Abs unit failure of 2004 vw passatmy abs module keeps flashing a brake failure on my dashboard.i don't know how safe it is to drive the car with a flashing brake light on the dash.seeing how this should be a safety issue shouldn't the manufacture fix this brake problem under a recall?

When braking after driving at highway speeds into the city vehicle bucked forward. Dealer stated the procedure was what they called a hard drive.also it was normal.

I have a 2004 passat wagon with 58,000 miles. About 2 weeks ago we started getting a "brake fault" warning followed by a large "stop". It lasts for about 5 seconds and then goes away. This only happens in the morning, and after about 15 minutes of driving. After that there will be no more warnings until we start the car the following morning. We may get one warning or three during the 15 minutes. We took the car to the dealer and they said there was nothing in the codes showing a fault. They keep the car over night, and the next morning took the car for a drive and confirmed the "brake fault". They told us we need replace the abs module at a cost of $900. Our car only has 58,000 miles on it, and it was garaged most of its life. We picked the car up from the dealer and have not fixed the problem yet. We are just out of warranty, and feel this should be covered. Todd knoeppel

The abs has been faulty forsix monthsfrom time of purchase a s brand new.the abs lit up and will stay lit until service departmentreset it. The brake litup and got stuck without pressing on brake pedal. Dashboard lightsmalfunctioned, and didnot come on through this failure.vehicle sat parked in the service departmentof dealership for 15 months without anyone investigating the problem.switch has been replaced 5 times within 1.5 years.the abs failed and caused an accident.

Reported when slowing down to 5-10mph care hesitated and then jerked as if someone hit from behind, also when braking to stop, car lurches forward. Vw dealership replaced brakes and rotors and did software update after 3 times in shop. Now car hesitates when either slowing down or from stop then kicks in all of a sudden, will be calling regional technician to report, still feel slight jerk at slow speeds. All happens when engine hot or cold.

Abs light and traction control light stay on all the time in instrument cluster.

At the 20000 maintenance inspectionthere was no observation done by the dealer. At about 22k the brake problem warning light came on and then off. I took the car at the dealer and they found that the back brake pads are almost completely worn off and they need to be replaced and the brake fluid needs to be flushed. The estimated cost was more than 350$. I asked them to give me an explanation on how the brakes got worn in the 2k between the 20k and 22k since they did not tell us anything about any brakes being worn at the 20 maintenance inspection. They had no answer on this. I finally decided to replace the back brake pads because the car was shaking on braking and i felt unsafe driving it. I did not trust the dealer any more so i decided to take the car to a third party shop i trusted, and i had to pay 138$ to replace the back brake pads.

My 2004 vw passat had 13,823 when the rear brake pads completely wore out. The front have only worn out 8% to this day (12/20/04). First, the car pulsated when the brakes were applied. So, i personally went to the dealer to find out what the problem was; which was no help. I was told there was nothing worng.later, to no suprise of mine; there was. The brake lamps turned on and didnt go off. Even with the car in park and turned off. With this, i went to the dealer who told me my rear brake pads were worn. At the dealers, the rear rotors were replaced for free, but the pads were not. This is simply disrespectful, as i am not a crazy driver and had to pay $220 to replace defective brake pads.

Passat 2004 id [xxx] while driving at approximately 55mph - the car pulled to the right similar to a possible flat tire. I pulled to the shoulder and checked each tire with a flashlight ' they were fine. I returned to the road and continued. The steering quickly became stiff, less responsive, with a shimmy in the steering wheel.i decreased my speed, put on flashers, and very slowly continued the last mile to my home when a loud metal-on-metal scraping sound started. The vehicle became hard to control because the steering was unresponsive. Had my wife or daughter been driving, they would not have been able to maintain control. This is a very dangerous, potentially life-threatening problem. This is inconceivable. We had the car towed to our volkswagen dealer to be evaluated and were told 'both axles need to be replaced as well the steering pump. This is not 'normal wear and tear'. This vehicle has 96,000 miles, has never been in any type of accident, is driven only on paved roads, and is kept in the garage. My serviceman reported he'd never seen anything like this. Please check to determine if anyone else has experienced this problem.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Upon starting the vehicle and turning the steering wheel consumer heard a grinding sound. Following that steering failed. Dealership serviced the vehicle on may 12, 2004, and noticed that power steering needed to be replaced. The steering was repaired the following day ,and was back at the dealership may 14, 2004.

The drain coming down from the sunroof apparently became clogged causing this vehicle to short out...horn blowing, alarm system going off, etc.the waterproof black box, which is underneath the drivers seat, was full of water and the comfort control box was all burned.the drivers side floor is soaking wet and we have been trying to dry it out for 6 days now.we are very concerned that this could have caused a fire while our daughter was driving her car. Please advise.....

Whenit rains, water leaks into and floods the foot well on the rear driver's side.

Distance between the foot restand clutch are designed poorly. When transferring feet from one pedal to another consumer's foot will get stuck between the pedals.dealership has been notified. There is a gap between the clutch pedal and the footrest to the left of the clutch pedal.consumer's foot has gotten caught on sevreal occasions.dealership removed footrest.

Water intrusion in passenger side rear footwell.anytime it rains.i have cleanedsunroof drains, battery compartment drains, cabin filter area and problem still persists.

I have a 2004 vw passat wagon. We were in the lake tahoe region last week during a rain and snow storm. We got in the car one morning to find inches of water in the rear passenger floor and to discover our transmission was shorted out. Had it towed 100 miles to sacramento, where it sat for a week before they were able to diagnose the problem whichwas pine needles in the drain below the battery which caused water to get in through the venting system. Volkswagon claims that this issue does not fall under warranty but was a matter of maintenance - yet no one seems to knowthat you are suppose to regularly check and clean the this drain as it's not part of normal maintenance procedures. We know at least the transmission control box is fried and do not have any idea if/what any other damage may be. There is nothing in the owners manual to tell one to check for this issue. I anticipate that this will be a cost of thousands of dollars. Besides the issue of water getting into the car, why is the transmission control placed in non waterproof location under the passengers seat that could be prone to getting wet? there is a forum in which many other vw owners speak of the same issue - http://www.theautobahn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12789 i cannot accept vw's lack of responsibility on this.

The plastic clips holding the window in place broke and window falls down.it costs $350 to replace the $1.50 cheap plastic part.

Have a water leak in my 2004 vw passat.after a heavey rain i was cleaning the inside of my car and noticed a large amount of water in the rear floor behind passenger's seat.i then soaked up all of the water and air dried my mat.i have searched the internet and found that this is a common occurance for vw owners and would like to report this immediately.thanks for your time.

The contact owns a 2004 volkswagen passat. The contact stated whenever it rained, water began to build up on the floor board behind the drivers back seat. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 92,000.

I noticed there was a considerable amount of water on the passenger side carpeting. I checked all drainage locations for blockage (i.e. Plenum, sunroof). All were clear. The water found it's way into the vehicle by way of a faulty (disintegrated) seal beneath the pollen filter housing. The car had 92,000 and was out of warranty. However, i found that there was a service action p9/66c8 applicable to my vehicle for which i was to be notified by vw in 2008. I am the original owner of the car and reside it the same address since 1978. The vehicle was sold directly to me by a vw dealer brand new in october 2004 and registered to me at my home address. I never received any notification. The corrective action noted on the p9/66c8 included directing the dealer to "install an improved seal for the pollen filter". I contacted vw customer care and they did not acknowledge that the service action existed and consequently there was no reason for them to contact me in 2008. They lied and i have a damage vehicle that gets flooded whenever it rains. I was compelled to make the immediate repairs at my own expense since the transmission control module (tcm) is located beneath the passenger side front seat of this car. Should the water get inside, it could cause damage to the transmission function. If this were to occur while driving the vehicle, a potential for personal injury to the vehicle occupants exists along with any damage to the vehicle itself. Vw has failed to take responsibility for a defect known to them. Vw has instead chosen not only to hold me financially responsible for the defect of their product but to also expose me (and other vehicle occupants of this vehicle) to potential hazards as a result of the failure risk associated with a flooded tcm.

Water cominginto front passenger seat resulting in damages to the tcm (transmission control module), wet carpeting, and rust under the passenger seat. The transmission module failure resulted in vehicle not able to shift into higher gear, and delay acceleration.the tcm and carpeting was replaced.

2004 vw passat 4-motion passenger vehicles are at high risk for a drainage clog related to the sunroof.this can occur even when the sunroof is in the down or closed position.the leak will cause water to pool in the right front passenger seat floor and can cause mold and a very smelly and potentially hazardous condition for the comfort and breathing of all passengers.having attempted repairs, i do not believe that vw is adequately able to address this problem; is attempting to minimize or conduct sub-standard repairs; and are returning vehicles with mold to consumers while stating that there is no mold.this appears to be a design flaw that cannot be fixed.

Odor entering the passenger compartment through the ventilation system when the recirculation button forthe a/c is turned off.the local dealer attempted, with our success, 5 times to fix the problem. I am concerned that the odor will have health implications.

2004 vw passat---i have had numerous occasions where my car lurched and rattled to a stop or would hesitate multiple times during acceleration. At idle, the entire car shakes.i have taken it in to the dealer at least 5 times.at first, the problem was only happening every month or so.now it is a constant problem.the check engine light is on, the car shakes in drive, reverse, and neutral.acceleration is especially a problem when on the freeway...it is both dangerous and scary.i have been told multiple times that the dealer is "waiting for a software update." i have also been told to go ahead and drive the car because it is not dangerous.now i have been waiting for months! i also have had electrical problems.on several occasions the red control panel lights have gone out completely while i was driving.i was told this is part of the same problem.

*sc

Brake light switch failed intermittently over a period of two years, finally failed completely.whenever the switch was operating poorly itkicked out the cruise control.

On 1/28 12:30pm, after around 5 minutes after driving outside my garage onto highway wa-202, the windows turn very steamy.in the next 10 minutes, we tried hot, air, and ac. Recycled and not.it just became worse and warm steam comes out of vents and completely blocks seeing into front. And my wife on the passenger side and young daughters from the car seat in the back see steam all around and cannot see through windows either. This damage almost turns into a disaster accident for my entire family on the state high way. My passat gls has been carefully maintained and protected in the full gated garage. Never water damage with it.we are genuinely looking forward a fair solution or treatment from vw. Please feel free to contact us for any document you want.

My luggage compartment light kept chiming in my car even though the door was shut. I recently took my vw passat to a dealer and was told the windshield wiper motor needs to be replaced at a $400 cost. The wiper motor that broke, was leaking fluid into the lock, which i had to replace 2 months prior to this incident.i noticed recalls for the same part in newer models. My car only has 60,000 miles on it.

My a/c blower motor works when it wants to and most of the time when it's hot it does not blow.the blower motor will start on it's own sometimes driving down the road. Or if i go through a car wash (drying cycle with the blower) it will start up. I had it at 2 vw shops and they could not find the problem.

Rear driver side window dropped into door panel without warning approx 11/2 years ago - window regulator broken. No previous damage to door or window suggesting a potential problem. Six months ago car was taken for service because front passenger window was not opening or closing completely.prior to checking technician suggested window regulator was going bad but claimed nothing was wrong with window upon inspection. Oct 17, 2008 same front passenger window dropped into door panel. Window regulator broken just like other. $450 min service. Volkswagen claims its bad luck not a recurring problem.

I own a 2004 vw passat.the window regulator went out in the back passenger side door.the window does not go down when the button is pushed.i have a friend who owns a 2002 passat and her passenger window regulators keep breaking also.she has had them fixed several times, but the problem still exists.i have not yet fixed mine.

The plastic clips holding the window in place broke and window falls down.it costs $350 to replace the $1.50 cheap plastic part.

2004 vw passat.i was driving at night on the freeway at 75 mph when i heard a sudden loud crash and breaking glass, some of which fell into the car.i immediately pulled over and identified that the sunroof had just shattered.glass from the middle of the sunroof was in little pieces on top of the headliner.the remaining rim of glass is present, bowed slightly upward but also full of little cracks.was in a remote area of highway, no homes, businesses, overpasses present.no truck traffic although there was one car 300 feet in front of me.i saw nothing in the roadway or in the air.when i got home i carefully examined the roof (fine layer of dust) and there were absolutely no marks.the plastic surface of the top of the headliner panel also has absolutely no marks on it.this appears to have spontaneously shattered and does pose a potential safety hazard as glass fragments fell into the car even with the headliner closed.the deal has advised i will need to bring the car back on monday for the manager to examine along with possibly a representative.i'm concerned about this happening again.in busier traffic or if headliner had been open this could result in an accident or passenger injury due to flying glass.

In april 2008 my 2004 vw passat spontaneously developed a crack, gradually lengthening, in the windshield. I replaced it with an original equipment windshield, and now, in march 2009, the windshield has again spontaneously developed a lengthening crack. In neither case was there any chip or "ding" or anything suggesting any impact of anything into the windshield.

Volkswagen passatt 2004. Vehicle windshield wipers are designed with a groove in the rubber that holds snow and ice and causes ice buildup on the wiper. In snow and freezing rain the wiper surface cannot contact the windshield resulting in an obstructed windshield. This is a design problem and happens consistently. Volkswagen was contacted and denies this design flaw exists.*la

Replacement windshield wiper blades have a specialized attachment and are only available through volkswagen new car dealers. The blades are also easily bent by snow brushes, scrapers and the like. The difficulty and inconvenience of obtaining replacements of this critical safety part causes visibility problems and an unknown number of wrecks. The date of the incident is the approximate date i purchased the vehicle new from volkswagen.
