At the time of purchase the consumers were concerned with the fact that the tires looked dry rot and there was evidence of cracking rubber, one month later all four tires failed during highway driving, there were no injuries, the car was totalled and there was damage to the guard rail that was hit when the car lost control as a result of the flat tires, neither passenger or driver air bags deployed when the vehiclw hit the guard rail (goodyear eagle ga 215 50r15).nlm

Started with airbag light turning on.a week or so later the parking brake and abs lights turned on but only for the first few miles of driving.while these were on, the ac fan, wipers, and headlights do not operate.these lights now stay on most of the time.

I purchased a 1997 volkswagen passat vr6 at checkered flag bmw in june 2004, and since have discovered that the electrical system is horrible. First, the air conditioner( a/c) quit working, then the airbag light came on, and the ac started working for a day, then blew a chemical cloud into the vehicle, while i was on the highway. My eyes were burning (as well as my face) for the rest of the day. Finally, i have already had to replace the battery, and there's a slow coolant leak. May i suggest that we remove all vw's from america's streets? they are a total menace to anyone who owns them! i went to checkered flag vw, to have it serviced, and they wanted to charge 89 dollars a problem, just to look, then they said i could trade it for a new one. Why would i want a new one? i don't need to trade an old problem for a new, more expensive one, i just want a reliable work vehicle, and i wish i had stuck to my guns and bought another prelude. This thing will see the crusher when i'm done paying it off! four problems in not so many months. Only another vw owner would know that kind of frustration!

1997 vw passat tdi. The car had a "tv-12" recall, in which the ecm and intake manifold was replaced.within six (6) months, the ecm went out again, and vw "refuses" to live up to the warranty.2) failure of this, does not diminish it's "crusing" capacity down the highway. However, there will be no power to pass safely, and much loss of power, when entering the 'exits'. Consequently, a very possible situation results to have a terrible crash.vw knows about this, and only fixes it when "the customer complains".3)the original intake was replaced, and ecm.however, vw will not put a 'new' ecm in, rather, they put in a "rebuilt" one.this is prone to human error, and that's why mine failed within five (5) to six (6) months. It 'goes out' constantly.

The contact owns a 1997 volkswagen passat tdi. The contact stated that a fire erupted spontaneously inside the dashboard which caused all of the wires to melt and the windshield to fracture. The fire department was contacted who determined that the fire started in the area where the ignition was located. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure and current mileage was 200,000. Updated 6/12/12 the consumer stated the fire occurred in the area of the ignition and locking components were service, replaced and removed 15 days before the fire. The fire dept determined the fire started in the ignition.

The contact owns a 1997 volkswagen passat.whenever the contact attempted to activate the windshield wipers or headlights, they failed to turn on.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer.there were no warnings prior to the failures.the current mileage was 62,000 and failure mileage was 60,000.

Vehicle volkswagen 1997 passat glx - v6 engine.full instrument cluster - speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, digital clock... Everything on it, does not operate when outside temperature is below 50 degrees.car must be driven for 10min., or about 8-12 miles, before instrument cluster returns to normal fuction.car is being driven without functioning speedometer, and it is difficult to estimate my speed and does not feel safe.there were no significant events leading up to the failure, except instrument cluster would make a buzzing noise when car started and trip mileage would reset. This started a few months before complete failure began.this problem gets worse as time passes, as the instrument cluster problem occurs in warmer weather now.problem used to occur when temperature was below 35 degrees.now happens at 50 degrees.

1996 volkswagen passat with 40,000 exspeienced sudden alternator failure. New battery previously installed. No explanation regarding failure. Replacement cost exceeded $700.

Ignition switch failure while vehicle operational.same condition was covered under recall on 1996 vw passat models, manufacturer is not offering coverage on same body style under 1997 and 1995 designation.impacted vehicle is a 1997 vw passat wagon.

1. Ignition switch failed.2.caused loss of electrical power and temporary engine failure. Electrical system damage.3. Replaced electrical portion of ignition switch, headlight relay.

Ignition switchwore out prematurely.while drivingheadlights and other electrical portions had turned off, affectingconsumervisibility while driving late at night.

The windshield wipers, air conditioner and headlights stopped working.the consumer staed the ignition switch needs replacing.

Consumer states vehicle would intermittenly not start.dlr determined the ignition switch is defective.ts

Various electronic components failed while driving--windshield wipers, lights, defrost motor--on a very dark, rainy morning, causing a dangerous situation and a near-accident.manufacturer previously warned of 'ignition switch failure', but would only repair after failure and before 10 yrs or 100,000 miles.my car has 100,600 miles.manufacturer refuses to bear the repair cost for this known defect that could have caused a serious accident.

Numerous ocassions my passat will "shut down" while driving.lose all power, a/c, headlights, windshield wipers, and numerous other power related items.this has happened while driving on the interstate and luckily i was able to pull over before being hit, or hitting someone.

Lights, wipers and heater fan lose power while driving.the ignition switch was replaced by the dealer at the owner's expense, fixing the problem. The ignition switch part number as listed on the invoice (6no-905-865) is similar, if not identical, to part number 357-905-865 that fails in the 1996 vw passat & jetta, a vehicle subject to a recall campaign for the same symptoms

Consumer complained aboutignition switch andheadlights problems.while driving on a winding road the headlightsjust turned off, and consumer would have to wiggle the ignition to get the lights to turn back on. Currently, manufacturer was recalling vehicles with this defect.however, because this vehicle had an excess of 125,000 milesit was 25,000 miles past the cut off point.also, headlights will sometimes go out while driving. Dealer replaced ignition switch. Consumer felt that this problem should be a definitive recall withoutmileage limitations.

Seat belts never raval all the way (minor issue), air conditioner gets cold only for about a minute (once again minor), and now it misfires on cylinders 5 and 6.i have replaced both o2 sensors, the coil pack (3 times), ignition wires (twice), spark plugs (twice in 4,000 miles), and the ecu. Still misfires after 3 shops and the dealer having it twice for about 2 weeks straight (ken garff orem vw/audi dealership).they told me "there is nothing we can do", vw america said "there is nothing we can do, those dealerships are independent from us".the dealer the first time i brought it in, broke some engine coverings, that i had to complain about to have them decide to replace.the next round i got the car back and the hood was poped a little bit but closed (i live 2 miles from the dealer).so i decided to take a look and not to my suprise, they left a few engine components unbolted and sitting in the engine compartment.they also left their tools and the bolts in small casim parts of the sheet metal.the wire harness was looked at and they convieniently left the wires cut but not all the way through. The contact owns a 1997 volkswagen passat.the contact has taken his vehicle to the garage and the dealer eight times.the engine head was replaced at 42,000 miles and the turbo charge is currently failing.the contact stated that the repairs cost more than the actual priceof the vehicle.the dealer stated that the computer needed to be replaced in order to correct the turbo charge.the replacement would cost $1,000.the vin was verified, but appears to be invalid.the current mileage was 46,000 and failure mileage was 38,000.updated 03/18/08.*ljupdated 03/18/08

Stalling without reason.dealer cannot find the problem

Heater core failed spontaneously, causing massive amounts of sweet smelling white/grey smoke and hot mist to fill the passenger compartment, causing a total visual obstruction to the driver and choking/coughing of a 5 year old passenger. The driver, my daughter, manager to pull safely off the busy road (us rt 1), but she and her child were very shaken by the event. The failure of the heater core could have caused a fatality! i have reported the incident to vw of america. I expected to hear back today from the vw dealership, but did not. I requested that they pay in entirety for the repair. The service manager was resistant, as there has been no recall on this model vw, although there have been on many others. The car has been a lemon, very expensive to maintain. It was a model built either in brazil or mexico. After the warranty expired with the dealer, we took the vehicle to a certified vw mechanic who was meticulous about maintaining the vehicle mechanically--we have detailed computerized documentation. Nevertheless, there has been an ongoing problem with the doors and locks, either the doors not staying securely latched during driving, problems with the power windows, and now the doors may be locked from the outside only--not when one is driving and wishes security. I did not report this to vw. I will be delighted if they come through for me on the heater core. One thing at a time.

My girlfriends 1997 vw passat has a plastic coolant housing which failed. When failure occurs catastrophic lost of all coolant occurs in seconds when cruising at highway speeds.

I was driving my 1997 passat when it started to over heat. The temperature gage rose very quickly and i immediately took the next exit off of the freeway ( 1/8 of a mile in distance). When the temperature gage reached 240 degrees my red dashboard light started to flash. I decided that i needed to pull over immediately. Within seconds, not minutes, i heard a loud pop sound, like an explosion. Steam shot out at myself and my daughter inside the car and we were sprayed with boiling liquid on our feet and lower legs. Visablility was almost zero from the spraying steam as i swerved into the nearest parking lot. I tried to come to a stop in the nearest parking space but i could no longer keep my foot on the brake pedal because my foot was being sprayed with boiling water. I threw the car into park and tried to grab the emergency brake, but we had already jumped the parking space curb and hit a large bush. The entire front inside of my car is damaged from water and coolant, and the front of my car on the outside has a dent and puncture in the bumper. The mechanic that came to my aid told me that the heater core had exploded. I don't know what would have happened if i had not noticed my car over heating, and i had still been on the busy freeway driving 55 mph when this explosion occured! repairs have not been made. The car is at a repair shop.i'm not sure what to do next.

The engine cuts out without warning while i am driving.i have not bee rear ended but i'm afraid that i might be.when the engine dies i pull to the side of the road with any remaining power.after 30 seconds to 1 minute i'mable to restart the engine and proceed.i have had the vechicle towed 2 times to the volkswagen audi dealership here in las vegas.the first time the dealer did recall work on the engine, changed the timing belts and air filter.the second time the dealer blamed the problem on a faulty ignition switch.after picking up the car my husband and i have still experienced the engine cutting out.this is a potentially dangerous problem especially in las vegas where the traffic is intense.i have read online at a tdi forum that other owners of this car have experienced this problem and that it may be due to a faulty relay in the fuse box.mr

Vehicle has a hesitation problem at slow or high speeds. When driving at any speed, thevehicle stalls and the vehicle loses power.

While traveling on interstate 95 in the passing lane at 70 mph, the car engine suddenly died and would not restart for 30 seconds, necessitating quick manuevering to the break down lane to avoid an accident.

Engine intermittent stalling.occurs during acceleration & steady speed.hot or cold. No identifiable pattern.if car dies, it will start right up (most times it just surges & does not actually die).the surging motion can last between 15 & 45 secs.has occured 4 previous times (thats prompted this complaint). Previous occurrences:8/19/97 8,658 mi; 6/19/98 18,413 mi; 7/31/98 19,841 mi; 9/14/98 21,402.completely frustrated and concerned dealer will bill me when i take the car in the 5th time to repair something that should have been fixed a year and a half ago.

Headlights on all the time are a safety hazard, not a safety solution!this is your fault, not the car manufacturers.the number of people who drive around for a while with only their headlights on, not realizing they have failedto turn on the full lights systemis infinitely greater than those who are saved from anything by having the stupid headlights-always-on feature.there is absolutely no proof that the headlights staying on ever prevented anything except long bulb life.itis undeniable that the headlights fail sooner because of it.and most severely that many many people will drive around with no tail lights for a while until they realize they haven't turned the full light system on.note that this will most often occur just after dusk when they are pulling out onto the highway.wonderful time not to have any tail lights on !!!in dusk lighting they are more likely than any other time not to notice the dash lights aren't on yetwhich is the only clue they failed to turn on the rest of the lights. "the highlights are perfectly fine" is the mental message.you have done a major disservice to highway safety by forcing the headlights-on feature. It is in fact an obvious hazard ! i have inadvertantly driven a while without full lights because of this dumb feature more than once, and it doesn't take genius to know that anyone with a newer vehicle saddled with this numb nut featurehas done the same thing.admit you screwed up and repeal the feature ! if you weren't so blasted bent on protecting us from ourselves you wouldn't be inventing these stupid messes.there needs to be a recall (the largest in history) to reverse the hazardous feature!

1997 volkswagen passat developed problems with the door locks, and side door handle.*mr

1997 vw passat tdi: rr door lock cannot be opened from inside.problem developed over period of time, safety hazard because a passenger would be unable to escape.lf door and rf door developing difficult opening.door can be opened from outside with difficulty.lf door will open only by power.

The door locks and latches intermittently have failed to secure the doors from opening,

All 4 door handles will quit working intermittenly , consumer then will not be able to open door or unlock door. Dealer has replaced all 4 handles, but defect keeps occurring.

3 door latches do not work properly, and currently are completely inoperative.have to pull with extreme force in order to open doors.

Door latchs that failed would not be replaced by manufactuer do to the milage on the car.what my door handles have to do with the milage i don't know!!!.

Driver's power window regulator mechanism has repeated failures despite replacement/repair on six occasions.this is a serious safety hazard, since the window must be closed by grasping the glass and manipulating it which can result in fingers being trapped and broken.also, once this failure has happened, the window may drop down into the door unexpectedly at high speed causing driver distraction, or fail to open in an emergency precluding an escape path.this is compounded by faulty door latch mechanism actuators which preclude door opening from outside by rescue personnel.the failure is caused by a faulty roll pin slipping out of the door latch trigger mechanism causing failure of and binding of the linkage which causes the door lock actuating mechanism to fail, trapping passengers inside the vehicle.please note that per the ge information services, japan issued a recall for this problem.

Due to poorly designeddoor latches on front driver's side/passenger's side, andrear driver's side, doors do not open from the outside.dealer saidvehicle needed new doors in order to fix the latch problem.*ml

Consumer states the pivot and plunger pivot point of the door locks have failed numerous times.

Consumer complained about door locks and latches. The door locks and latches froze in cold weather. Consumer had to tie a belt from the door to driver's leg to keep the door from opening when driving the vehicle. Consumer contacted the dealer and the manufacturer. The dealerlubricated the locks, and it helped for only two weeks and the problemrecurred.manufacturer was no help.

Started with airbag light turning on.a week or so later the parking brake and abs lights turned on but only for the first few miles of driving.while these were on, the ac fan, wipers, and headlights do not operate.these lights now stay on most of the time.

The vehicle in question has a manual transmission with a lock-out for selecting reversegear. On occasion and unexpectingly when the transmission is shifted into reverse the the transmission remains in forward first gear. This happens even though the shift lever is distinctly in reverse position and the back-up lights are on. It is extreemly dangerous. The dealer has replaced and adjusted the shift mechinism many times. The vehicle now has 69,000 miles on it, and the problem is still occuring.

When the gear lever is put in the reverse gear gate the gearbox may be in either reverse or first gear. The driver does not know which gear the car is actually in until the clutch is released. Obviously, this makes parking a needlessly dangerous exercise.

While traveling at approximately 40 mph consumer attempted to applybrakes to stop for a red light, brake pedal failed to move, causingvehicle to travel intointersection. Dealership examined vehicle, and determined thatvacuum line coming off ofbooster in the braking system ruptured, and needed to be replaced. Consumer also states that vehicle cuts off due to the fuel supply relay being defective.

On top of all the chronic design and other failures that have been endured, add the following :drivers outside rear view mirror - lens falls off on own accord.also, although not immediately safety related - passenger side visor plastic holes broke out so screws will not hold visor in place.*la

When going over bumps there is a loud cracking noise coming from the rear driver's side,it sounds as though metal is cracking very loud. Dealership stated that this was due to body: wheel well cracks.the vehicle is at dealership for prolbem.

1997 volkswagen passat developed problems with the door locks, and side door handle.*mr

Rt front passsenger door does not close securely.i will be bringing the car into the dealer for the 3rd time to look into the problem.

Outside door handles of both front doors do not work. Rear door handles must be pulled hard to work. Driver's door handle works only if windows are lowered significantly, but not all the way. During this car entry process, i also discovered that right rear window will go back up when i turn the headlights on. Driver's door handle pin was reinstalled by dealer 4/18/2002, but it failed again 2 months later. Passenger door handle failed on 10/31/2002. It does not respond to the lowered windows.dt

Door handle has failed several times.

Vw america all through this said only that i can complain and that they will "note this in my record, but thats all we can do."they haven't even offered to help me find a new dealer or tell me a typical way to fix a misfire.

Since purchased engine burns 1/2-1 qt of oil every 1000 miles. No safety defect listed in vehicle.

On august 16, 2003, we were driving on the new jersey parkway in our 1997 volkswagen passat station wagon when the clutch pedal broke.after having it towed to our mechanic, he confirmed that the clutch was fine but that the pedal had broken, a failure he had never seen before.

Dt:the contact stated the heater core was leaking coolant onto the floor, not allowing the windshield to completely defrost.the vehicle has not been seen by a dealer and no repairs have been made.updated 01/19/06.

Heater core failure - heater core failed catastrophically, dumping hot coolant in the drivers side foot well, and obscuring visibility by rapidly steaming up all windows.upon request, vwoa replaced the heater core and covered parts/labor 100% as a good will gesture.this should be a formal recall as the heater core in this vehicle is the same part (same part number, manufacturer, etc...) that was the subject of formal recalls in the late 1980's and early 1990's golf/jetta/corrado/passat chassis.

The contact owns a 1997 volkswagen passat.while parking the vehicle, the contact heard an unfamiliar noise and the air conditioning began to blow hot air.he exited the vehicle and discovered water leaking from the undercarriage.he believes that the heater core may have failed.the current and failure mileages were 157,000.

I haven't experience a failure yet, but i have a 1997 passat vr6 and it seems that many people with my model have experienced heater core failures, especially while driving.i'm filing this report as a preemptive mechanism.

Heater core failure. Initially i only smell the radiator fluid. Then it quickly changes over to steam actually coming out of your vents. This causes your windows to fog up. Radiator fluid came shooting out of the dash but on the passenger side. This probably would have scalded someone if they were sitting there.

While drivingat any speedand without prior warning chemical fumes are coming through the vents.dealer statedheater core failed.

On sunday, august 5th, 2007, while driving the car with my 7 year old son in the back seat, dense, noxious 'steam'/smoke began to come out of all vents and around the dash area in my well-maintained volkswagen.hot coolant also leaked into the passenger compartment of my passat on the driver's side.note that this occurred while air conditioning (a/c) was on & continued to pour out of vents without a/c on.my 'low coolant' indicator light (red led in instrument cluster) also began flashing. Fortunately, i was able to get the car (and my son) home without overheating after stopping on the side of a busy washington dc thoroughfare (wisconsin avenue), opening the fogged-up windows, cleaning the interior of the front windshield, and refilling the coolant reservoir/'overflow' tank with antifreeze purchased nearby.since the 'steam' smelled like coolant/antifreeze, i immediately suspected that this was due to a failure of my car's heater core.i subsequently confirmed this diagnosis after dropping off the passat at my long-time, certified, mechanic, beahm's auto service of silver spring maryland.beahm's diagnosed, but did not replace my heater core on tuesday, august 7th, 2007 (the heater core has been temporarily bypassed so that the car could be driven without additional coolant loss orof the car's windows/interior).my passat is otherwise in excellent, well-maintained condition with only 116,000 miles, no accidents, and it passed washington dc safety and emissions inspection in august, 2007.

Heater core failed- clouding the window to a degree that we nearly had an accident before we could get the car pulled over.

Hot coolant suddenly started coming out of the vents and caused all the windows to fog over.had to pull of freeway and get a tow.no indication of a problem prior to the failure.problem turns out to be a bad heater core.had heater core bypassed because of the cost of the repair.

Rear window defroster power button spontaneously failed, and currently works only when held in the on position.this is a fafety issue when driving, as one hand is required to hold the button on until defroster clears, taking concentration and coordination off driving.

Window regulator failed two times.

Power window.

Numerous ocassions my passat will "shut down" while driving.lose all power, a/c, headlights, windshield wipers, and numerous other power related items.this has happened while driving on the interstate and luckily i was able to pull over before being hit, or hitting someone.

While driving at any speed at night in inclement conditions headlights and windshieldwipers worked intermittently. Consumer stated, if he moved the key back and forth in the ignition switch the headlights would come back on.

On top of all the chronic design and other failures that have been endured, add the following :drivers outside rear view mirror - lens falls off on own accord.also, although not immediately safety related - passenger side visor plastic holes broke out so screws will not hold visor in place.*la

Sunroof suddenly and loudly exploded outwards from cabin after about 10 minutes of driving with heat on high/medium high at approx 65 mph.sliding sunroof partition was open.only a few pieces of glass fell into cabin, but entire sunroof was shattered into thousands of uniform pieces, expanding outward from cabin and remaining in a slightly outwards expanded shape.
