Re ford windstar (my) 2001-2003, 2nd & 3rd row seat recall.recall number 03v459000. *tc
No accident has occurred. However, who or what company do i email to get information on why volkswagen will not put forth a recall on the sunroof of the jettamodel 2001 and 2002? i am waiting to hear back from this company. However, from the consumer reports i see that they have not recalled this part on these cars.can you please direct me to the email address that i might get an answer? it is a serious issue with the airbags that are located in the colulms of this vehicle. If they get wet they will not work. Therefore it is a hazard that volkswagen should address.thank you

I purchased a 2003 vw jetta this past april.on november 22, 2006 at 6:00 am on interstate 395 ct, my side driver airbags, back seat airbag and driver seat airbag deployed.i did not hit anything on the highway nor was my car struck by any object.i brought the car to the service department that day to have it looked at assuming that they would find a defect and fix the problem.instead of being helped by the service manager i was accused of hitting something.they said there was damage underneath the car.i brought the car to my insurance branch and they found no damage.vw again refused my claim.i then had the insurance company come to the dealership to look at the car. Later that week the insurance company hired an investigator to examine the car and he found no damage to deploy the airbags.my insurance will not pay the $3,000 to fix the car and vw will not pay.i have 3 deployed airbags and one broken driver side seat belt.
While driving, the air bags deployed without any impact.
I was driving my 2003 vw jetta under normal road conditions. I stopped at a red light in an intersection, continued when it turned green. I hit a small sized pothole at the other end of the intersection at speeds below 15mph, which caused the wrongful deployment of the side curtain and seat airbags as well as locking the seatbelt tensioner making it inoperable. I inspected the vehicle after the incident and found no damage whatsoever to all body panels and wheels/tires. The following morning i had a mechanic inspect the car for any suspension or steering problems and none were found. I took the vehicle to the dealer where i purchased it to have it fixed under warranty and the dealer and vw of america have denied warranty repairs and have not yet done anything to fix the problem. I did research on the internet for similar incidents with this make and model and have found that there have been 500 similar incidents of spontaneous airbag deployment in 2002-2004 vw jettas, golfs, gti and new beetles around the country.
While driving on interstate the passenger side overhead and seat airbag deployed for no reason.
My husband was driving my car over railroad tracks when the passenger side airbags deployed and the car shut off. Fortunately my husband was driving slow and no one was injured. My vw dealership instructed me to contact my insurance agent. They conducted an investigation and found no evidence of collision and refused to cover damages. Then i brought the car to vw and they discovered some undercarriage damage and informed my insurance agency. Upon re-investigation of the car the insurance decided that they would now cover the damages that are estimated at around $5,000 but i have a $500 deductible and my premiums will now go up. As far as i am concerned railroad tracks should not deploy airbags and i should absolutely not be responsible for any costs related.
Passanger's side airbags deployed for no reason while vehicle was in motion. I was in a rear end incident in which my 2003vw jetta was struck almost dead-on in the rear by a 2009 bmw sedan. Both my wife, seated in the front passenger seat, and i, driving, were wearing three point seat belts. The airbags in our vehicle did not deploy.both the drivers seat and the front passenger's seat were reclined almost completely as a result of the impact, to the point that any rear seat passengers we might have had in the car would have been pinned by the reclined front seats. 2003 vw jetta - side and window airbags deployed on passenger side while car was parked overnight.no visible signs of impact to cause airbags to deploy.will have to have new airbags put back in at approximate cost of $2,500.if deployed while vehichle moving could be a dangerous situation.vw told us going over a pothole can also cause them to deploy.
The consumer was driving a 2003 jetta gls traveling at a speed of about 35mph when the driver side airbags "curtains and seat airbags" spontaneously deployed.there was no impact to the vehicle that would have caused the airbags to deploy.after conducting extensive research on 2002-2004 jettas, this seems to be a major issue that is not being recognized by vw of america.

I was on my way to florida, driving south on i-95 (going through the town of st. While driving on interstate, driver side airbag deployed for no reason.this was not preceded by a pothole, flat tire, swerve, or any other event.driver was hit in head by airbag, but managed to control car and bring to halt in breakdown lane.only damage to car is the airbag.no other vehicles involved.

From a parked position andat a dead stop the car was driven at almost no speedso that the right front tire climbed one of the belgian block curbs. The driver was alone in the car.as the right front tire climed the belgian block curb the passenger's seatback side-thorax airbag and the passenger's side airbagdeployed. There was significant airbag which caused damage to the interior of the car, butthere was absolutely no evidence of any damage to any part of the car arising from the contact between the front right tire and the belgian block curb.
1. Accident where the car was struck at 90deg between driver door and rear passenger door by pick up truck2. Side impact airbags did not deploy3. Dealer did not want to get involved, manufacturer ignored the issue, stating that the air bags do not deploy in all circumstances.

I was driving my car on a straight section of road that was newly graded gravel at about 35 mph when the passenger side air bags deployed.both the side air curtain and the seat air bags went off. The seat bag hit my wife on the back of the upper arm leaving some bruising and what looked to be large welts and burns. The swelling and burns went away after we found some ice and pack her arm in it. Vw says that we were in a collision but we were around no one and did not hit anything. There is no damage to my car for any collision. My insurance company fixed the car under a comp. Claim as they were unable to find any collision damage.
I have 126,000 miles on my 2003 jetta.i was driving down the highway on my way home from work and the driver side impact airbags deployed for no reason.

Very simple: i was driving and the passenger side airbag exploded. Something needs to be done!! this car needs to be recalled. The deploying of the airbag scared me so much that i almost crashed over this!
As my family an i were driving down teh freeway, the passenger side airbags including the ine in the seat deployed for no apparent reason.we did not even hit a bump, the bags just deployed.we just wanted to report this to help track a problem, if there is one with this type of car.

Vehicle passenger side curtain and seat airbags deployed unexpectedly when driver encountered minor pot hole in road. There was no exterior damage to the car or wheels due to the pot hole. Driver paid out of pocket (and via insurance) to replace airbag system. Volkswagen acknowledges no responsibility for faulty system or repairs. Driver suffered potentially permanent hearing damage due to blast of airbag deployment.

Dt: the contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. The driver's side air bag deployed for no reason. The speed at this time was about 60 mph. The contact was unaware of any debris that may have been on the road.the contact did not lose control of the vehicle. The air bag warning light was not on prior to the incident. There were no injuries. The dealership was contacted and the contact was to take the vehicle to the dealership tomorrow, and the vehicle was covered under a warranty.this occurred on august 31, 2005.
Driver started from a stopped position, ran over curb between 5-10 mph, side airbags deployed.
Passenger side and curtain airbags deployed upon driving over a pothole.volkswagen of america has refused to acknowledge this as a defect in the vehicle and has refused to repair the interior damage caused by the deployment under the limited new vehicle warranty.a memorandum from my insurance company notes that both they and an employee of vw have seen this occur with other vw jettas. My insurance company also seems to be of the opinion that the sensors are too sensitive as it "detected" a crash when there was neither a crash nor an accident.
Inadvertent air bag deployment in the 2002-2003 volkswagen jetta and 2003 honda accord.*mr*tc
Dt:on july 3, 2004 the passenger's side/curtain airbag deployed without cause.the passenger sustainedminor injuries.there was damage to the vehicle.when the vehicle was inspected by the volkswagen field technician he said that there were some small dents that caused the deployment.when someone from transport canada inspected the vehicle he said that there was no reason for the side curtain airbags to have deployed.he said that the dents were there before the clear coat was even put on the vehicle.there was no collusion.
Driving home from work when the passenger seat air bag and the passenger window air bag just went off for now reason while i was driving.i did not hit anything and nothing hit my car.
I was backing out of my parking spot and my driver side tire hit the curb. There was a scratch on my muffler. My side curtain air bag and the air bag in my seat deployed. I was told my first time of contacting the manufacturer (before i made a claim) that the sensors were in the front of the car and the air bags should not have deployed. After i filed a claim all of a sudden they lost all ties with me ever talking with that specialist but all my other conversations with the manufacturer were recorded. After arguing with them for months i decided to go ahead and file a claim through my insurance company. Doing that i had to wait 3 weeks before my air bags would come in because they did not have any in the whole country. A gentleman at my office his son also was driving down the rode went over a steel plate and the same air bags went off. They again told him 3-4 weeks for the air bag. The air bags went off due to a scratch under the door.
While driving 25 mph consumer ran over a rock.this caused the driver's side seat air bagto deploy.consumer drove the vehicle to dealer for inspection, and mechanic informed consumer that a cause had not been determined.a representative would inspectvehicle and thenmake a determination.
While driving at 40 mph,and no warningair bags deployed. Dealer notified.
While exiting the baltimore harbor tunnel north bound at 55 miles per hour i hit a pothole. The pothole slightly damage the right front(passenger side) rim and broke the tire seal. The driver side curtain and seat airbag deployed unexpectedly.also can not retract or adjust my seat belt. Minor medical injures ocurred. Decided to check for others who have had this problem and it seems volkswagen in all those cases will not take responsibility, so i decided to file a complaint. Will speak to my dealer asap.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 30 mph through an intersection, the vehicle was t-boned on the passenger side.the side and curtain air bags did not deploy.five people sustained minor injuries and a police report was taken.the dealer was not contacted.
Dt:the contacts stated while drivingthe passenger's side/curtain air bag deployed. The vehicle was not in an accident prior to the deployment.there was no warning prior to the incident.the vehicle was towed to the dealership. The manufacture stated the vehicle must have been in a previous accident because the black box contains crash data and there was damage to the undercarriage.the manufacturer will not repair this vehicle.there was an investigation nhtsa action number pe04081.
In december 2003, i was driving on i-495 in the dc area and hit a small rock (felt similar to hitting a pothole).my passenger-side airbag deployed...after inspection, the dealer said that, although there was no damage to the outside of the car, there was a small scratch on the airbag sensor.it was considered a collision and my insurance had to cover the bill (around $2500).six months later (june 2004), i was driving down joplin rd near quantico, va and driver-side airbag deploys. While its a winding road, i didn't feel any impact.i just got a call from the dealer's service dept. Saying that (again) while there is no visible damage to the outside of the car, it appears that something hit the inside of the car on the passenger side telling the airbag to deploy.again, they said my insurance company will have to cover the airbag/seat replacement.
While making a left hand turn side curtain and side air bags inadvertently deployed.driver sustained minor burns to arms and hands.
While turning into the parking deck at one of my satellite offices, my passenger side curtain and seat airbag deployed. I immediately contacted the manufacturer as there was no evidence of an impact anywhere on the vehicle. Once the vehicle was towed to the local vw service center, i was informed that they could not begin work on the vehicle until they contacted a vw representative due to a technical bulletin. It took 3 days before the vw representative returned a call to the dealership. It took several days longer before the named representative from vw customer relations contacted me. The service center at vw advised me that there was crash data and a mark on the underside of my vehicle. After several more days and after involving my insurance company, vw finally responded advising me that i must have hit a curb or speed bump which caused my airbags to deploy. It is now over three weeks later and i have just today been informed that the parts to fix the vehicle are backordered and no other parts are available in country.in the short 7 months that i have owned this vehicle, this is the second time that there has been an incident (malfunction) and both times the parts have been backordered from overseas causing a delay in servicing the vehicle of more than three weeks.
Was driving to a movie theater and a was doing about 25 mph and i hit a small pot hole in the road and my passenger side seat and curtain airbags deployed there no dents no crash nothing at all.
In june 2004, i was driving down joplin rd near quantico, va and driver-side airbag deployed.while its a winding road, i didn't feel any impact.the dealer said that although there was no physical damage to the outside of the car, something hit the inside of the car on the passenger side telling the airbag to deploy.they said my insurance company will have to cover the airbag/seat replacement (about $2500).this is the second time an airbag deployed in this vehicle for no apparent reason.(note:i previously reported this complaint in july 2004 but had included both incidents in one complaint.)
I was driving down a city street and stopped at a red light.i proceeded to make a right hand turn; about midway through the turn my drivers' side front and rear side curtain air bags as well as the drivers' seat airbag deployed.there is a pot hole at that intersection, however i do not remember hitting it, i only remember getting hit in the head by the airbag.if i had hit the pot hole, the airbags still should have not deployed because i was only going at most 10mph, the rims nor the tires were damaged.there was no damage to the car at all besides the airbags.the police were contacted, they would not fill out a complaint since there wasn't actually an accident.i then contacted the local dealership and they said they would fix it since it's under warranty.however vw america had a different idea.they told the dealership not to fix it and that we would have to file with our insurance because there were crash data codes.they did not bother reading the codes to see how fast i was driving, but they decided it was my fault since the alignment was off, therefore i must have hit a pothole.after 3 weeks of fighting with vw america, we filed a complaint with the better business bureau, after 2 weeks of waiting to hear from them, they also said they could not help, they stopped helping airbag deployment accident victims over a year ago.we filed a claim with our insurance and had to pay the deductible.we are currently filing a complaint with the state for the pothole that allegedly caused the airbag deployment.i have constant headaches as a result of getting hit in the head by the airbags.i will never again own a volkswagen, they are unsafe vehicles and the way they treat their customers is unacceptable!
While backing out of my driveway, at no more than 1 or 2 mph, the drivers side, side curtain airbags deployed.vw has thus far claimed the vehicle hit something causing them to deploy.
I was driving up olney st. In providence, ri when all of a sudden without notice the side airbag curtain and waist side seat air bag deployed without and impact.
Complaint received via e-mail. My brother was driving my 2003 volkswagen jetta on route 17 in new jersey and passed over railroad track at a speed between 20-30 mph (on 50 mph highway). After clearing the tracks the drivers side curtain airbag and side airbag deployed. Luckily, no one was hurt... Immediately he came to my job (i work at a car dealership) for one of the technicians ,for me to look at.vehicle. We could not find any damage or any signs of a collision. So, i took my car to volkswagen so this could be fixed. Then, i was informed because driving over the railroad tracks triggered my crash sensor causing it to register a crash or collision, this was not covered. The dealership then informed me to call my insurance company and file a claim. Now i would like your advice is this suppose to happen, and since it happened to me, should it happen to everyone if the warranty doesn't cover it. Wouldn't a faulty sensor rather then a busy road traveled by thousands a day cause this.
I drive a 2002 vw jetta, with 11000 plus miles on the car.my side and passenger curtain airbags deployed without a crash.there was spontaneous deployment of the airbags.vw of america sent an engineer who found no damage to account for this, just as i had reported.the vw dealership also found no evidence for this.now, without any explanation, nor guarantee that this will not re occur, vw expects me to drive this vehilce and risk my own safety and possibly the safety of others on the road.*la
Driving along a bad road hit a pot hole going around 45 miles per hour and the passenger side air bag went off. This happend on march 7 of 2004 around 1:30am. No visable damage to the car. Dealership said its not covered by the warenty. Air bag went off by going over a pot hole. That is no reason for an airbag to deploy, need dealership to replace the airbags.
2003 vw jetta: spontaneous/unintended passenger side, side curtain air bag deployment. While driving subject car on may 5, 2010, passenger side, side curtain airbags deployed. There was no collision, impact with road debris or rough pavement involved. Reported to dealership. Seeking repair of same.
All warning indicators (abs, cel, airbag, ecp, battery and other instrument dash panel lights) would flicker repetitively until the car lost all power.after inspection of the engine compartment it was found that the alternator cable that attaches to the fuse box located on top of the battery was melting the fuse box and causing power distribution problems.the volkswagen dealer recommended that they both be replaced as the cable could have become high resistance thereby causing excessive heat at the fuse box.i had the alternator cable replaced with an oem part and the fuse box with an aftermarket part.on 10-9-13 with 104k miles while driving to work at 6am in the morning, the exact same symptoms were experienced again.luckily i was on a side road and was towed to a dealer which said that all oem parts should be used and that this is common as they had just replaced the alternator cable on another jetta of the same generation.i requested the dealer check the entire electrical system including the alternator because the parts that were installed last year should not go bad in 1 year, the dealer said there was no other issue.i am not the only one experiencing a melting fuse box.at the links below are others who have experienced the same thing, even across other vw models.there seems to be a serious problem of melting of fuse boxes which can occur at any time the vehicle is in operation.(with pictures) http://forums.fourtitude.com/showthread.php?4562591http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4682918-why-s-my-fuse-box-meltinghttp://newbeetle.org/forums/questions-issues-concerns-problems-new-beetle/28982-battery-fuse-box-melting-04-new-beetle.htmlhttp://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4705261-battery-light-flickering-on-accelerationhttp://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4829541-burnt-black-cable-fuse-box-on-top-of-battery.
Tl- the contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph a burning plastic odor was present inside the vehicle before the passenger suddenly experienced a burning sensation coming from the seated area of the passenger seat. The contact indicated that the passenger side seat heater element had over heated causing a burn hole in the seat and causing a minor burn to the passenger. The contact stated that a small flamed to the passengers right pant leg had to be extinguished during the incident and the passenger seat burn hole measured approximately 1 inch in diameter. The vehicle was diagnosed at the dealer. The contact was informed that the defect was caused by a faulty heat element inside the seat. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified but no solution was offered. The failure mileage was125,000.jft
Right passenger side window is blocked inside door
Battery fuse box melted. Engine overheated and cut off.
Rear passenger doors fail to respond to key fob.stay locked/ unlocked.
Dt*: the contact stated the engine light illuminated four times.each time the vehicle was taken to the local dealership for inspection and repair.the dealership repair department replaced the glow plug, the relay to the glow plug and the thermostat, however this did not remedy the problem.
Drivers side seat heater ignited burning through seat trim and burning driver while operating vehicle. This occurred in a seat that the dealer indicated they had replaced under the initial recall (however date on seat is 11/25/2002 before car was delivered in 4/2003 - so dealer never actually replaced it . Seat retained and photos available for inspection.
(prior incident) 05/27/08 at 32k miles alternator harness burned and melted fuse panel (while car operating at low speed returning home from local trip).fuse failed to prevent overheating of terminal connector on alternator harness at fuse panel.current incident: 08/06/10 at 47k miles the alternator harness that had been replaced at 32k miles burned and melted fuse panel again, and alternator was also damaged requiring replacement (car failed to start at home after being parked overnight).fuse again failed to prevent overheating of terminal connector on alternator harness at fuse panel.
There is a fuse box on the top of my battery as there was for all mk4 jettas, golf in all motor trims. The fuse box on top of the battery melted. When opened there was a black wire severed from the box. When turning the battery over the cable wire was arching. The wire was actually sparking. There are fuses in the original box but they never broke, tripped.
When i was sitting in the driver's seat with the heated seat option turned to a 5 (high), while the car was warming up, i noticed some smoke coming from the right side of the seat. The heated seat started to burn through the cloth cover directly where my metal jacket zipper was making contact with the cloth seat surface. I immediately poured water on the seat to ensure a fire didn't start. I have not attempted to use the seat heaters since this incident.
Driving home from work. Has made two stops. On the way to my home my abs and airbag lights came on, radio froze, then car shut off. Was advised fuse panel on the top of the battery had melted. Mechanic found no reason for this to happen. No other issues.
A week before this incident speedometer quit. Non vw repair shop replaced speed sensor, this did not fix speedometer problem so they sent me to ny vw dealer who replaced crank sensor. Could not even drive car out of their lot after the repair as car was stalling and hesitating. They then said i needed to replace needle lift sensor. I begged them at that point to look for a wiring problem or electrical system problem because i couldn't believe that 3 sensors could all go at once without a system cause. I was told to "trust them" and that they had checked with vw and vw said that was all they could do. "the diagnostic computer said that is all that is wrong" . After week in repair shopvw dealertold me car was "all fixed". 3 days and 300 miles later on i-83 south of harrisburg car began jerking and lurching out of control, then stalled. I was near exit 32 and was able to get off safely, fortunately. Had to be towed to vw dealer. Now vw dealer in pa tells me car had "coolant migration" which was source of all problems, they think dealer in ny should have caught it. Vw is backing ny dealer that they fixed car correctly despite other dealers comment and my near miss with being crashed into by other drivers on i-83. I fail to see how coolant migration happened in 3 days and 300 miles. Pa vw dealer says ny dealer should not have missed the coolant migration, and should not have replaced the expensive sensors before repairing the coolant migration problem. I certainly agree since i traveledless than 300 miles and i was just lucky that i was so close to an exit and was able to keep restarting the car and coast off i-83. Had i been further away from an exit or in heavier traffic i could easily have been run into by another driver as the car lurched and jerked and stalled. I also fail to understand why vw is not responsible. Obviously this problem started while the car was still in warranty -pa dealer said engine was "very corroded" and the wiring was "full of coolant".
Noadvance notice. The car shut off in heavy traffic, almost causingan accidents.the volkswagen dealer , carl gregory in columbus, ga, could not find the cause of the problem at first. Later they found the problem andreplaced: 1. Harnessp/n 1j0-971-349-hg,2. Holder p/n 1j0-937-617-d,.fuse p/n n-104-249-0. They did not return the parts to me.since no onewas sure what caused the problem or if this fixed the problem.i own a volkswagen with only 56622 miles that i could not trust to drive out of town.
As we were driving home, all the lights on the dash started blinking.the accelerator pedal stopped working in the middle of a busy intersection.the car engine continued running, but it just stalled in the middle of traffic and could not accelerate to get out of traffic.so we coasted the car for about 1.5 miles to a family members house.when we arrived, we turned off the car and tried to restart it, it would not start.after opening the hood we noticed that the fuse box/harness that sits on the battery was very hot.we opened it and saw the far left black wire/cable was burnt up and melting the plastic in the harness.the black wire was extremely hot.i had this problem before, it was 3 years ago, but i did not know where to look. I spent over $500 fixing what seems to me the same problem as before.on the dealership receipt it said "found generator harness at battery fuse box melted causing high resistance in voltage circuit.....replaced fuse box and generator cable".on that occurrence it was so bad the burns had ruined my battery causing it to leak.i called vw manufacturing, but they were not very helpful and just told me to call my local dealer for assistance.they said it was not a safety issue, even if there was a fire hazard.my car is currently being looked, looking for an underlying cause for this...if it is the cable or something else in the engine.the connection was reset but the wire/cable continued to get excessively hot.
Engine battery fuse box melting. Replaced twice. Found out it alternator wiring is bad. I have a small child. Car has left me stranded on side of road several times due to faulty alternator wiring.
The rear door locks do not work with the key fob or the electrical switch ion the driver's door.this is a serious issue when you have children in the rear seat.
The thermostat on my 2003 volkswagen jetta failed for the second time. The first time it failed as at approximately 40,000 miles in 2009.
There have been numerous problems with the electrical system in my car.most of which have been unfounded by the dealership.in most cases it is my windows that do not obey comands. If i push the window up button, the windows may roll themselves down or go all the way up instead of just a little bit up.same on the down.sometimes the pinch control will activate itself and the window (which i think is closing) will roll down.this is not a safety concern per say but i am concerned that i may be unaware of the window being down and my dog might jump out causing an accident, or it might draw my attention away from driving while i try to figure out what is going on, again, possibly causing an accident.the car has been in a few times for this problem but the dealership says they "can't duplicate the problem" and refuse to do anything about it.another problem is that the radio stays on sometimes when i am exiting the car, again not a safety issue, but it really lets me believe there is an electrical problem with the car.i have also had a blown fuse-causing the epc-light to come on... It was for the rear brakes.the lights wouldn't turn off after i was out of the car.
2003 vw jetta gls wagon with 62k miles, abruptly shut down while driving.after towing to local mechanic, it was determined the main fuse holder had shorted out and begun to melt, risking an engine fire.part was replaced and problem repaired for $237.
There are many problems which seem to be a cause of the electrical system. The car will simply die when you stop at a red light, stop sign, etc. It will try to die while driving down the road. The digital display constantly resets itself, especially when you turn the car off, but also while driving. The radio does this too. The back brake light also has some type of short in it. It goes out and comes back on. We have replaced it twice in as many months.
My drivers side seat heater doesn't recognize the setting of 0-5. It's either on, or off. Meaning, 0-4 the seat heater doesn't heat the seat. But when i turn it to 5 on the setting within 10 minutes the seat gets so hot it burns my legs through clothing.
Within 6 months (4) of the (6) ignition coils have failed. I have it in now for the third and fourth ones.
The day before the car quit, it would not start after being parked in the mall parking lot. A battery pack got it started, and it was driven home, with the thought that it needed a new battery. The following day, it was being driven to the local sears, for a replacement battery, when the abs and airbag lights came on.30 seconds later lots of warning lights came on, and the car sputtered and stopped dead in the lane of travel.it would not turn over, and power accessories would not work. I was stopped on a very busy 2 lane back road, with no shoulders or side streets, uphill, on a blind hill.after 1 1/2 hours of white-knuckle directing traffic, and calls to: my auto club, and the local police; a local police officer, and a local tow truck showed up and gave me a lift to my repair shop. The mechanic's diagnosis of the problem was a partially melted fuse pack, that sits on top of the battery, and an overly resistive cable between the fuse pack and the alternator.the solution was: the cable end linked to the fuse pack was re-terminated, and the melted fuse pack was replaced.between the tow and the repair, it set me back about $300.00.i also found a blog that listed many other vw owners with the same problem:http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4986219-fuse-box-above-battery-melting .i also discovered a class action law suit that was filed in 2012, that was based on this problem:http://gotaclassaction.com/volkswagen-named-in-class-action-over-fuse-boxalternator-cable-assembly/ .i hope that the current repair holds for the near future.clearly, a fuse should blow before the overall fuse pack melts.
Both front seats, the bottom right side bolster burned. The heated front seats will over heat, the failure appears to be confined to the right bolster on the bottom section of the seat. The heating elements get hot enough to burn through the seat material. Being the side of the seat i was able to shift my leg away and power off the heated seat. If left on the seats will start to smoke. I consider this a safety issue, i haven't tried , but it seems as though the seat could catch on fire if left on. The local dealer's service rep said just unplug it the option.
Driver's seat heater malfunctioned. Right side of seat has small burn marks, is discolored, has exposed elements, and seat foam is melted. Two pairs of pants obtained singe marks on separate occasions. I drive the car to and from the city via interstate for 40 minutes each way. Seat heaters are typically on for about 20 minutes. Beginning in november when i used the seat heaters i could smell a slight burning smell. Since it was the beginning of the winter season i figured it was just heated dust on my seats from being inactive all summer. The final time i used the seat heaters (1/26/12) the smell got so bad that i had to open the sun roof for air. I also noticed the seats got hotter than usual and wondered if my seat back was heating at all. As was usual when the seat was hot enough i would manually turn off the seat heater. I did not know what was happening until one day when i noticed brown marks on the right side of my pants. I then looked at the seat and saw the damage to the seat. The driver's seat element was replaced in may 2006, the passenger seat august 2006, due to previous recall/warranty service.
My 2003 volkswagen jetta has experienced a coil pack failure causing a reduction in power, and the engine to misfire. According to the volkswagen dealer, the housing of the coil pack was cracked which allowed moisture to affect its operation. The dealer also stated that there is no recall or replacement program for 4 cylinder engines experiencing this problem.
Started car and turned on headlights. Started driving home and the dashboard dimmer switch caught fire. Fire went out but all dashboard lights were out.
"takata recall" burned fuse box caused alternator to go bad.
As i was pulling out of a grocery store parking lot, my 2003 jetta gli vr6 began to sputter and lose power.engine light came on and would stay lit or start blinking as i tried to drive home.i contacted vw roadside assistance along with my vw dealership (strong vw, slc ut), and they informed me that i must bring it in.seeing that i was barely going to make it home i contacted roadside assistance which was provided with my jetta and they informed me that they could tow it to the nearest vw dealership (not where i originally purchased or had my car serviced) to have it looked at.needless to say it was actually closer for me to drop off the jetta at the nearest dealership rather than take it home, so i did that.i found out the following morning that the ignition coils were bad and needed to be replaced.that was done under warranty and apparently everything was fine.three days later, each and every time i started my jetta a noxious smell would fill the cabin.i reported this to my original dealership and had it in for service to fix the problem.after 5 days of trying to determine what the problem was they informed that since they couldn't duplicate the problem that there was nothing they could do.ironically it hasn't happened since.my major complaint is that in the year and a half that i have owned my jetta, i have had it in for non-traditional or non-scheduled service more than 3 times.my major fear is that when the warranty runs out what will happen next.i have been a loyal vw customer for 20+ years and haven't had this many problems with my previous 4 vw vehicles combined.sadly enough, i possibly may never buy or lease a vw again!
I have a jetta that continually burns out the fuse box, which just happened again. The fuse box to replace costs around $100. Everytime. Due to this problem i am encountering additional repairs. Ignition coil etc. I even went and purchase a new battery for 160.00. Car will not run? help.
One of the two large cooling fans in the front of the engine failed. The part must be replaced to prevent engine overheating. The part number is 6x0-959-445-f.
My car got hacked my charlie miller and chris valasek was seen over at my neighborshouse on 4/29/2017 and my ex boss chris stutz jr is in charge of all the break in of my house and cars edwardsville police will not do anything because the police are friend of them i hope i don't get killed over these hacks but if that's what it will take to do anything about it
2003 vw jetta: digital display would shut off when key was removed from ignition. Unable to lock vehicle doors with remote. Vehicle had to be restarted for digital panel to appear (re-set) and for door to lock with remote. Engine would also shut off while at a stop light and while driving on freeway. Possibility to cause a crash. All digital panels still illuminated, key would be locked in ingnition, un-able to turn or be removed until car placed back in park and hand brake pulled up. Issues occured bi-weekly, weekly, and now daily. Vehicle brought to dealership. Was told that ignition switch failed and needed to be replaced. Would have been covered under warranty (warrant just expired last month). After trying to diagnose problem prior to bringing to dealership, i've found on several forums that this is not a new issue/repair for vw customers with the same make and model. Many customers have had similar complaints/experiences, all of which were taken in for repair after warranty expired. Vehicle is only 7 years old and is at approximately 85,000 miles. This vehicle has also had service for the following recalls: catalytic converter, failed ignition coils, failed rear window/door locks. This car is a lemon!
The alternator cable got so hot it started a small fire in the fuse box on top of my battery. Completely melted/burnt the fuse box. I see there is a good pattern of this happening with these jetta and beetles.
I turned on the driver's seat heater to 5 (highest setting) on my 2003 vw jetta tdi when leaving my house at 7 am. I used this regularly to warm the seat for a few minutes on cold mornings, then would turn it off (lower settings never produced noticeable heat). Within one minute i felt a burning/electrical sensation in my upper left thigh. I was driving on a mountain road and the pain made me jump in my seat and nearly lose control of the car. I pulled over and turned off the seat heater (having heard of problems with the heater). The leather seat had a blister about the size of a cigarette burn but had not burned completely through. While i stopped the heater before it burned through the seat (and my pants), the real danger was in a possible accident from the burn/shock that caused me to momentarily lose control of the car. The seat heater is no longer safe to operate. My understanding from reading similar posts here and elsewhere is that the wiring is now broken in the seat (and many have had it break in the same spot). If i had not guessed the source of the problem quickly, or if someone were to unknowingly use the heat setter in the future, it could lead to a serious accident, personal injury, and car fire. Similarly, this poses a serious risk for other drivers of these vehicles who may not be aware of the problem and react too late. I request that the nhtsa urge vw of america to issue a recall on this dangerous and pervasive problem (many reports here and elsewhere, such as tdiclub.com and vwvortex.com). Vw has issued a recall on this problem in canada but not in the u.s. They also have a voluntary repair for passats of similar years, but not jettas or golfs. Thank you.
Dt: 2003 volkswagen jetta diesel tdi.the engine died at 70 mph.the consumer knew it was not the timing belt and believed it to be an electrical problem.the car has an electrical problem with thecomputer sensor that controls the signals.lights to flash, flashers also with power windows. The consumer took the vehicle to a mechanic and he could find no reason for this to happen.the timing belt is in place and in good condition.*sc
Vehicle experienced hesitation, keyless key battery does not work, epc light illuminated due to lost of power, jack fell while car was on it, and problems shifting the car out of park.*mrwhen the epc light illuminated for the second time, the dealer replaced the engine control module. The vehicle experienced two flat due to the tires being overinflated.
I am the owner of a 2003 vw jetta. I was recently burned(11/2010) by the seat heater while driving and the car seat smelled like it was going to start on fire. My car had a recall not long after i bought it for the seat heaters. It is obviously a malfunction in the seat heater that vw has had numerous problems with based on the recall and the plethora of complaints on the internet. I can no longer use the heating unit. I took it to patrick motors in auburn, ma where i bought the car. They said it was out of warranty and they would charge meto look at it to see what the problem was and then maybe ask vwoa if they would help. I was not willing to pay more money for something that is obviously a manufacturing problem and has been documented as problematic.
I've had multiple issues with my vw jetta 2003 and have put thousands of dollars into the vehicle. My limit was that alternator cable melting the fuse box and the battery.the vehicle is unsafe and could have caught on fire and potentially injured individuals or caused great harm.the sad part able the entire scenario is the fact that i contacted volkswagen customer care that spoke with brea s. Which may not be an actual name because she could not provide it and she said that she had spoken to her leadership ashley and that they did not see this as a safety concerns and just because lots of other people had the same issue and mentioned it on a blog they were not able to help me.now for me something that can cause a potential electrical fire for most people is a safety concern and the fact that this is a known issue with the volkswagen jetta and beetle models, it amazes me that vw customer care does not see it as there issue, brea was out of the auburn hills location in michigan.this really needs further attention.
Alternator harness wiring and fuse box are under-engineered for electrical conditions and output given by alternator. This is the second time in one year i have to replace the fuse box and alternator harness wiring due to risk of engine bay fire. Many other vw owners in this generation and different models also have this problem with their vehicles. I believe this should be recalled and it is extremely dangerous to go unnoticed.
Lost power, radio stopped working, a/c starting blowing hot air, epc light came on, battery light came on, abs light came on. Then the car would not crank. I thought the battery was dead so i jumped the car. I made it home then the car would not start the next morning. After examination i found that the fuse box on top of the battery had melted. The wire from the fuse box to the alternator overheated. Was told by two different volkswagen dealerships in birmingham, al that this was a very common problem. If it is a common problem why is there no recall?
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. The contact stated that after the vehicle was parked for a few days, the battery failed to make connection when starting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but the failure was unable to be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 193,000.
The car was parked for two days without being driven.while it was parked, neighbors ran over to report it was smoking under the hood.we saw that there were flames coming out from underneath the front of the car.fire department came, but fire had already extinguished itself.fire department disconnected the battery ground and said the wires going to the cooling fan had set on fire.all of this was spontaneous.engine was not on.
The fuse box in these older jettas melts because it is on top of the battery, which can cause the car to shut off while driving. Its very dangerous.
The alternator cable melted the fuse block and the car almost caught on fire.
My 2003 vw jetta has been in the shop more in the past 6 months than in the last 5 years. The latest two problems were; 1) the engine coil (was replaced once by recall) and 2) my fuse box on top of my battery melted. I have spent over $1,500 in the last two months on the car. Was told that only one engine coil was allowed under the recall, and was told the fuse box melting was a common occurrence even though they did not ever find the "real" reason for it to melt.
Alternator wiring harness melted.
1/10/08 i had my 2003 vw jetta in for service. I was told the ignition coil #3 needed to be replaced.4/11/08 ignition coil #1 needed to be replaced. I found the recall on your web site after the april problem. I was told that my car is not part of the recall, even though it states 2003 jetta.on 12/4/08 i had to replace ignition coil #4 and on 1/21/09 another which also included the last two. I contacted volkswagen of america, inc and was once again told that my 2003 jetta was not included in the recall.
Iam the original owner and have always kept my jetta in the garage. I moved 3 and a half years ago and my car is no longer garaged. My headline is starting to detach from the inside of the car and the leather throughout my car is cracking. I noticed there was a classss action lawsuit regarding the sunroof drain getting clogged causing damage to the car. Who can i contact to see if i qualify for this action. At the time of the recall i did take my jetta to a dealership and they said everything was fine, is this because my car was garaged and now its outside exposed to the elemets, which has caused this damage? thank you,
I have a 2003 jetta gls. I had about 65k miles on it and the speedometer first fluctuated wildly then died, or appeared to be dead. It would randomly start working for a few days and often would die again while i was driving. Non functioning speedometer affects function of auto locking doors, odometer, trip computer, and related functions (they do not work when speedometer not working). My mechanic tested the vehicle speed sensor located on the transaxle. It is fine. I had the entire instrument panel replaced (to the tune of almost $700, $500 of which is for the part!). Now i am being told it may be a coolant migration issue similar to that of the my 99-01 cars. However there has been no tsb for 2003 jettas and now my car is out of warranty. Replacing the wiring harness is avery expensive ($6khas been mentioned) repair. Internet research shows that my issue is not unique, many failed speedometers in this model year jetta, although vw to date is silent w/customers.
My seat heater failed in my 2003 vw jetta, burning a hole in the seat under my left [xxx]. I was startled when suddenly there a strong burning smell in the car, then a hot spot in the seat occurred which caused me to have to quickly shift my seating posting and i immediatelyturned off the seat heater. Luckily i was driving slowly in the city and able to pull in the in a parking spot quickly and the seat or my clothing did not catch on fire.the seat was set to 3 on a scale of 1-5.the car has about 125k miles on it. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)*ln
The fuse box on top of the battery melted due to overheating from the alternator cable. No excessive electrical load has been placed on the battery. Just normal use of the car causes this to melt.
Car had a burning smell coming from the engine.the engine light came on.while on the highway the car stopped moving forward and stalled in traffic, the battery light then came on.i turned the car off and restarted it.in a 30 mile round trip, this happened 3 times.upon further inspection, the battery mounted fuse block had completely melted and was extremely hot.
Sun roof drain clogs!!! no direction in manual for cleaning nor warning that it can happen. I found nearly three inches of water in the floor and water all over the interior fuse block. My concern is fire related.corrosion can lead to high impedence connections and after water intrusion i have no idea how safe my electrical system is.this is the second or third incident and i finally found out what was causing the problem by doing research on the internet. Many others have experienced this problem and it appears that the design of the outlet nipple is the issue.
2003 volkswagen jetta gl was found to have fried cable from alternator leading to fuse box on top of battery. Problem was found and fixed 3 years prior to being found again at the dealership. Both times cable and fuse box were replaced. Pictures of thesecond incident are available. Also found that this incident has happened on other jettas as well. Worried that could potentially cause a fire.
Air conditioner stopped working . Found left fuse onfuse box on top of battery is black and melted.
The rear o2 sensor on my 2003 volkswagen jetta failed causing the mil indicator to illuminate. The sensor had to be replaced, and is not covered under the extended warranty for emissions.
The temp sender on my 2003 volkswagen jetta failed for the second time. The first failure occurred at approximately 38,000 miles in 2007.
The safety light on the interior of the front passenger door that lights up when the door is opened failed on my 2003 volkswagen jetta. The dealer stated that the problem was a failure in the front passenger door latch mechanism. The door latch mechanism was replaced, and was not covered under warranty.
Having worked in vw dealerships my transmission control module is failing at only 130,000 miles on it which has been an ongoing issue and complaint by many. When it acts up it won't upshift or will drop down into low gear and one has to worry about being rear ended when this condition occurs.
My wife's 2002 volkswagen jetta has a bad ignition coil.both volkswagen corporation and our local vw dealer, speedcraft in wakefield ri, admitted that they havea coil problem with all 2002 jettas and passats.they further noted to my wife that they do not have enough parts on hand to perform an actual recall.we are demanding that they replace all 4 coils since they know that it is likely that all 4 will eventually fail.they are refusing to do this.we feel it is unacceptable for them to refuse fixing a problem they know will likely occur.such a failure at the wrong time while driving could possibly cause an accident.we are fearing for our safety.
Epc light on dash keeps coming on.when on, it is impossible to shift car out park. When at idle and light comes on, idles wildly up and down. When epc light is on, brake lights do not work.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta wagon. The contact stated that the speedometer failed to provide an accurate speed traveled. The contact also stated that when the cruise control switch was activated, it would cause the vehicle to surge forward abnormally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they confirmed that the sensor in the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 170,000 and the current mileage was 211,000. Updated 12/14/11the consumer stated the transmission was exhibiting an intermittent hesitation. Updated 12/20/11.
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle had problems crossing the united states border from canada due to a required certificate of conformity from vw of america stating that the vehicle conformed to us federal motor vehicle safety standards, california air emission regulations and us epa emission regulations.according to the manufacturer, the vehicle met all of the above except the speedometer must be kept in reading mph (which it does), the odometer must be labeled (it is labeled in km), the dashboard brake warning light and antilocking brake system warning light must be marked brake and abs in letters at least 1/8 of an inch high.the vehicle's brake and abs indicators are images , which the contact clearly understands having driven thevehicle for 3 years, and the contact did not understand how changing the images to words can significantly affect the safety of the vehicle.the cost for the replacement of the instrument cluster ranges from $500-700.the vehicle was a 2003 volkswagen jetta wagon tdi.
My brake light swich has been replaced 3 times on my 2003 jetta tdi vw.failure of this switch causes brake light's to either stay on consistently or not turn on at all.loss of turbo in vehicle and can cause loss of power due to battery shut down.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving in a rural area going 50 mph, the battery light illuminated.the contact pulled off the road to call a tow truck.before the contact could get the call made, the vehicle caught on fire, and burned to the ground.the fire department extinguished the fire, and determined the fire originated from under the hood.prior to the incident, the contact detected a faint smell of rubber burning.there were no problems with the vehicle prior to this incident.the dealership was not notified, but the contact planned to notify them soon. Updated 10/17/2006 -
Dt: the consumer was driving on the highway when the abs light and the air bag light came on. She pulled off the road and the vehicle stalled . The vehicle would not start back. The mechanic informed the consumer the alternator cable burned the fuse box and cover.the consumer wasconcerned that if they same part will be put back onthe same thing will happen again.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. The contact stated that there was a burning smell coming from the front of the vehicle as the battery light illuminated. The contact discovered that the fuse panel caught on fire.the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the alternator, the harness, and the fuse panel needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but failed to remedy the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 43,000.
Ignition coil packs are faulty on 2002 vw jetta's with 1.8t engines. There are four of these parts on each 1.8t engine. This problem causes the engine to misfire to the point of the car will stall and can not be driven. Vw is aware of the problem and has not issued a recall and will only replace the defective coil that fails not all defective coils.owners could be stranded on the roadside and face potential danger. One of my coils failed this january 13, 2003
Ignition coil failed, was told the o2 sensor was bad and needed new spark plugs, i had just replaced the spark plugs 5 days earlier, they only had 11 miles on them, so it cannot be spark plugs, question whether the o2 is truly bad, having ignition coil replaced but was unable to tell whether the catalytic converter is also bad until other problems are corrected.
Bought a volkswagen jetta gls in 2003. Several things have had to be replaced.for example the glove box cover, wheel bearing.my mechanic told me that on most newer vehicles that wheel bearings do not require maintenance. My car has 74,000 miles.last week i was driving and my malfunction indicator light started flashing and the car if going over 30 mph cut out.there was a rotten egg smell.it immediately went to the dealership and they said the catalytic converter and 2 coils were faulty.they replaced the catalytic converter and ignition coils for cylinders 1&3 and cleared fault codes.the catalytic converter was replaced under warranty.but said volkswagen feels the ignition coils are a regular maintenance issue.i have done some research and am finding that volkswagen has numerous complaints on the coils.in my research i found that vw had a customer satisfaction letter that was sent out to vw owners to bring car into dealership to replace the coils.vw representative in michigan told me that they stopped doing that in 2005.i believe that i should have not had to pay to replace the ignition coils.vw knows that they have had numerous problems with this.i love my vw but i have had problems this car that i have never had in any other vehicle.i trade vehicles every 3-4 years but will not purchase another volkswagen.not because i have had so many things go wrong because the strange problems i have had with the car and volkswagen doesn't take care of their drivers.
Three out of four of my ignition coils have blown and i have less then 50,000miles on my car.the dealership admits there is no reason this should be happening, however i have to keep breaking down and getting my car towed in for it to be covered under warranty.this is outrageous they know they are all bad, but if i ask them to fix them i have to pay for it.this is an ongoing problem with my make/model and year.i have contacted volkswagen directly and they will not do anything about it they say and i quote "i'm sorry to hear that"i tell everyone how many problems i have had due to this issue and have deterred at least two people that were considering volkswagens to buy different vehicles.its a shame this is my husband and i's second volkswagen but the car has been towed/or broken down 9 times in less then 3 years, that's not good.once this lease is up we will never deal with volkswagen again.they don't want to do anything to help their customers, and that's a shame.i have done research on the coil issue and there are a lot of people who have encountered this same problem, obviously there is a huge defect and a lot of vehicles were affected.
My coil packs seem to be failing, but cannot be reproduced by the dealer.my 2003 jetta 1.8t runs very rough in the morning and then runs fine.i am scared that the coil packs will fail in a critical driving situation.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta.on two separate occasions, while driving approximately 30 mph with the accelerator pedal depressed, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate.the contact drove home and had the vehicle towed to the dealer.the dealer stated that the coil inside the cylinder failed and had to be replaced for the second time in one month.the current mileage was 39,890 and failure mileage was 39,046. Updated 03/14/08.*ljthe coil pack was replaced
Ignition coil failure on the 1.8 liter turbo engine for the volkswagen jetta.
Ignition coil on a brand new vw will go bad. I own a 2003 vw jetta 1.8t. Ignition coil #3 went out while i was driving on the highway. Car just lost power and started to run very rough. Brought it in to dealership to repair and was inform that they are aware of this problem and parts are back ordered. Shouldn't there be a notice sent out to owners about this problem and it's potential risk?
I drove to work the car ran fine. After work i started the car it begin to shake. It lost half its power..the dealership was three miles away. Ignition coil went bad at 46,158 milesand today 3-10-08 another one went bad at 49,036. My best friends passat ignition coil went bad at 19,367. I think these ignition coils are lemons and they need to make better ones.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta.while driving 30 mph, the check engine light illuminated.the mechanic stated that the ignition coil was defective.as of june 22, 2007, the vehicle has not been repaired.the vin and engine size were unavailable.the current mileage is 76,000 and failure mileage was 69,000.

This is the second time now that my 2003 vw 1.8t jetta would not start when i went to leave for work in the morning.i un-lock the doors with the remote and get in the car, press in on the clutch and turn the key, the headlights, radio, door-chimes and interior lights all come on but the engine will not turn over at all.i only have 8800 miles on the car at this point in time, the first time was about two weeks ago and the dealer can't seem to find anything wrong with it.i don't understand what could possibly be causing the problem except that both time it has been near freezing outside and the car had sat over-night.the first time the dealer had my car for three days, without giving me a loaner car before they told me to come pick it up because they couldn't duplicate the problem.this time they have had my car for two days now, and i haven't even received a phone call from them to let me know about the progress of my vehicle.*la
Ignition coils on 2003 volkswagenjetta 1.8t continue d to fail every 3-4months. I have gone through 6 coils in less than one year. Numerous times a coil failed while on a major highway, especially while attempting to merge into traffic flow. Icould recall twicewhere i came very close to being rear ended because of this sudden loss of power. The engine light would briefly flash letting me know that the car washavinga misfire. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for this and plenty of other problems in the past. The service manager suggested that i do a tune-up on the vehicle only 5,000 miles after one was performed. He could not pinpoint' the problem or duplicate it either. Apparently, volkswagenwas aware of the problem, but had not taken action to my knowledge. Thiswas something very seriousthat should be more of a priority to volkswagenconsidering i have found plenty of articles on this particular problem.
My brand new 2003 jetta gli failed to start at a shopping center. The car was parked there for only two hours. Seems like the battery and ignition switch works, but the engine would not start. Called aaa. After 10 minutes and numerous attempts of cranking the engine, he was able to start the car. Took car into the delearship. They were not able to duplicate the problem after two days, but put 60miles on the car.
Failure of door wiring harness. Does not allow me to drive the car - the engin will not engage due to the electronic failure of the door wiring harness. There should be some way to override the electronic failure so that i can drive it.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving at 35 mph on normal road condition problems were notice with the traction button for the esp system.the vehicle was taken to the dealership who determined the black brake switch failed.the brake light switch has been replaced for the purple brake light switch twice.the black brake light switch had a recall for 2002 model but does not cover the 2003 models. Additional problems are associated with the brake switch, which includes the traction button for the esp system and the park position lever which locks often.also the contact once became stranded on a highway when the vehicle stalled and could not be restarted.the vehicle was towed to the dealership who replaced the ignition coil.all repairs made by the dealership has been covered by the vehicle warranty.the contact expressed concern about brake lights because represents serious safety problem
Addendum to nhtsa action number: dp05004over the course of the past 11 months, four of the ignition coils in my 2003 jetta gli/ 6cyl have failed. The service dates for each occurrence are: 5-12-06, 8-9-06, 12-26-06 and 4-5-07. Upon the third failure in december 2006 i asked if my vw dealer could replace all of the original ignition coils, as clearly a pattern of failure was evident. The dealer indicated that they were only able to replace coils as they failed and that i could contact vw to voice my concern. I contacted vw customer service to request that they replace the remaining 3 coils, to again receive the response that they will replace the coils as they fail, but not proactively. (as long as my car is under warranty.)today the fourth ignition coil failed and i am now outside of my warranty coverage. (warranty ended 2-28-07.) i contacted vw customer service to file another complaint and was instructed that i will be responsible for the repairs as the car is no longer under warranty. Upon receiving this information, i researched the issue and found nhtsa action number dp05004, which indicates that vw issued customer service campaigns on 1-31-03, 6-6-03, 12-03 and 1-04 instructing dealers to replace all ignition coil packs in model year 2000-2003 volkswagen jettas. Upon finding this information, i called vw customer service again to see if my car would be covered and was informed that my vin was not covered by the csc, as csc's are vin specific, not model/year specific.i would like the nhtsa to re-open action number dp05004. The ignition coil issue is still occurring, and vw is not authorizing dealers to replace all of the suspect ignition coils as indicated when this action number was closed.

I have a 2003 volkswagen jetta tdi gls. I should note that this vehicle has been faithfully serviced by the dealer following the maintenance schedule listed in the user manual. The vehicle currently has 109,000 miles. While driving the vehicle a few days before the incident date listed on this complaint, the a/c ceased to function properly. There was no cool air coming out of the vents. Also, when the vehicle was shutdown, the radiator fans would continue to run upwards of 15 minutes. Neither event has occurred before. I brought my vehicle in to a vw dealership on the incident date to have its normal 110,000 mile service and to have the issues (noted above) diagnosed. I received a call from the dealership later in the day on the incident date stating that a failure in the coolant level sensor caused coolant fluid to be wicked into the vehicle's wiring harness leading to contamination / corrosion of the engine and body harness. The quote to repair was approximately $6,000. This problem is a latent defect in the design. The service department told me that the vehicle was un-drivable until the repairs are made. The service advisor also confirmed that because the problem was with the harness itself, any electrical component could be affected such as the airbags, abs, srs, etc. Also, from my own research i found some people who experienced this problem have also had smoke or fires inside the vehicle. Vw issued a technical service bulletin (id# c 97-01-01) for a similar issue on 1999.5 - 2001 model year jettas, but never for the 2003 and never a recall campaign on the defective design. Vw has refused to assist in the cost of repair to the vehicle as well.
While i was driving on the freeway, suddenly a firestarted for no reasonfrom under the passenger glove compartment, burning plastic was dripping to the floor mats. I pulled over to the shoulder, and after several minutes my car was totally on fire. I would like to know if there are other incidents of spontaneous fires for this make and year model.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. The vehicle has a fuse box that is under the hood located on top of the battery. The 150 amp fuse is for the alternator; however, the fuse itself is getting hot enough to melt the box. The dealer stated that there are no existing recalls; however, they have seen this failure occur frequently. The vin is not available. The current and failure mileage were 79,000.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. While driving 50 mph, the contact noticed smoke under the hood that entered the cabin of the vehicle. The contact stopped the vehicle and opened the battery fuse box where he found that there were overheated wires and overwhelming smoke. The contact stated that the failure was recurring and the smoke was emitting from the battery fuse box. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 96,000. The vin was not available.
My situation is very similar to odi id number : 10136903. I have a 2003 jetta. I was driving about 65 mph, my abs warning light turned on, air bag warning light turned on, and my radio turned off. After stopping my car, it wouldn't start again. I had it towed to mechanic, who determined that my fuse panel (above the battery) had melted and he was very surprised that my car hadn't caught on fire. He replaced the fuse panel.a few days later, my car failed to start again. A jump start started it. Next day, my car failed to start again. A jump start started it. I drove it straight to mechanic. My alternator, which was fine last week, is now fried (after two drives), most likely because the fuse panel burnt it out. The alternator in my 2003 jetta is a 90 amp alternator. Vw stopped making these because they aren't powerful enough for the cars. I repeat, 90 amp alternators are no longer made for my car because it requires 120 amp alternator. Hmm.
Numerous times that the engine light has come on my 2003 jetta.first visit was 9/12/02.the others were:2/21/03, 6/13/03, 10/21/04, 1/6/05, 12/14/05, 12/21/05, 1/9/06, 1/13/06.it is currently on and is waiting for a cat. Converter.they charged me to hook up to computer, replaced all coils & spark plugs and the light is still on.
Dt: the contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetty.the contactstated s dashboard control system caught on fire. Last night was driving on highway smelled something burning. Was notsure what it was. Got close to home andsmoke was coming out of the dashboard.by the time she got within a block of the house the dashboard was on fire. Husband came out with a fire extinguisher. Husband used extinguisher on vehicle. Called fire department andpolice departments. They unhooked the battery. Fire department gave all clear, but not to try to drive vehicle.they told consumer to take vehicle to volkswagen dealer. This morning called volkswagen, and were inthe process of seeing what theycould do.husband sustainedright leg injuries.customer also complained of eyesburning from smoke.police department and fire department reports taken.no crashes. We had just picked vehicle up from the dealer.
All dashboard lights illuminated and then the car died within sixty seconds. We were able to re-start the car after sitting for 30 minutes, only to have the same thing re-occur within two miles. There were no warnings, except for the illuminated lights, but this left no time to safely pull to the side of the road. This could have been a very tragic or fatal event if we were not on a local, neighborhood road.
The jetta is defective in the car will start but needs to be engaged in ignition and the sit for 12-15 minutes before it is able to get in drive gear. Currently it will not engage in reverse gear. The temperature is mild 74-78degrees f and the car needs to be constantly serviced. Upon the incident this jetta was driving and there was a visibility probelm through the windshield . The windshielf was replaced. The engine lights are on the engine was serviced, it was leaking fluids, it was serviced by a reputableservice center 9 mile eastpointe a specialist is foreign cars.then the jetta while driving in a residential area the steering locked up and was stiff , stiffer still and unable to engage the driving rhythm i am an experienced driver and accustomed to pre power steering and this was a mechanical failure in the steering, wheels?? currently the car is unable to be used as it wont go in gear of reverse, it moves on the consul and there is no motion. The battery and the fluids and the celanoids, belts, everything has been checked and looked over. I had to get a tow to get it serviced in oct. 2014 and will have to get a tow now too for the estimate of why the flat fuse on the battery is not able to give the engine enough power to drive or reverse. The jetta was bought used from another party, and had an accident from that owner, it was sold to me and since then the leaking fluids, check engine light have been serviced. I see 0 recalls. I realize you have over 40,000 consumer complaints but this is a safety concern as i transport human passengers of minor age and have had difficulty several times in just driving down the street to manouver a small car.this jetta is aged and has high mileage but this is a german engine? the precision and tuning i have previously experienced from an automobile is lacking in the components of the engine pieces put into action to driv.
This is in regard to tiptronic transmission failure at 77,000 miles. After the vehicle was fully paid off and 17k miles after warranty had expired. While i was driving vehicle would stay in 1st and 2nd gear and give a big jolt when going into 3rd and 4th while still cold, only after engine would heat up without any stops would it perform sub par. Previous to this i had have no complaints. Dealer quoted $5600 to rebuild transmission and independent shop $2500. I was informed i had a worn clutch and in 2008 i rebuild the transmission and continued having the same issue. After thousands of dollars spent on this vehicle on april 12 of 2012 i sent it the junkyard. I will follow up and send more hard copies documents to nhtsa as i have my entire service records from 2003 - 2012 to submit. There are 100's of other american car owners with tiptronic transmission experiencing same issues and its apparent that it is faulty manufacturing.i'm attaching several pdf documents with articles and other similar costumer complaints. I have all my service records and will submit hard copies separately however wanted to get the complaint started here. The year of my vehicle was never included but its obvious this issue has been happening longer then previous recalls.
The thermostat on my 2003 volkswagen jetta failed for the second time. The first time it failed as at approximately 40,000 miles in 2009.
Fortunately, my son was at a red light and went to take off and it would not change gears..he rolled into the parking lot ahead of him. He told the wrecker driver that it felt like something fell - we opened the hood and saw that the motor was actually sitting crooked. The motor mounts were broken, on one side broken off on the other stripped.this could have been a very bad outcome. Several mechanics have tried to repair it (unrepairable). We have been told that the block and/or engine will have to be replaced. The cost for the part is between $ 3100-3700 - plus labor. Keep in mind that the motor runs great! i have contacted vw - with no luck.. But admitting that there have been others. I feel that this is not only poorly designed..maybe not strong enough material, but it is or could be dangerous. As i stated fortunately my son was a t a red light..not going down the hwy and come to a sudden stop.
According to a vw dealer, the catalytic converter on my 2003 vw jetta failed at 89,000 miles. The vw dealer stated that it failed because the mil illuminated and the car's computer shows code p0420. The dealer also stated that the vehicle is no longer covered by any warranty.
Car stalls at highway speeds when at quarter tank or less. Parts replaced, still occurs. There is no known fix for this problem, it always comes back, and is most likely a manufacturers defect with the fuel pump system that is being ignored by vw of america. This is happening to hundreds and most likely thousands of volkswagen jetta, golf, beetle and gti owners. We have been connecting the dots through online vw forums and are frustrated! there have been accidents reported due to sudden power loss and therefore deceleration due to this issue.just this morning my jetta stalled in front of a semi truck doing 65mphon the highway. This is a very dangerous problem, it's happening to a lot of owners of vw's manufactured between 1999 and 2005, and it needs your attention before someone gets seriously injured. Thank you.
The plastic dipstick handle on my 2003 vw jetta cracked off the dipstick and required replacement. The part number is 06j115611e.
One of the two large cooling fans in the front of the engine failed. The part must be replaced to prevent engine overheating. The part number is 6x0-959-445-f.

The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the engine suddenly began to rev and caused the vehicle to accelerate. The contact applied the brake pedal in order to slow the vehicle down. The contact pulled the vehicle to the side of the road and heard a banging noise coming from the vehicle and noticed that there were parts on the ground. The contact stated their was also black smoke coming from the vehicle. The contact towed the vehicle to the amb auto dealer where it was diagnosed that the turbo failed and the turbo and engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 212,000.updated 10/24/17*lj
My 2003 volkswagen jetta's coolant pump failed while in traffic. This caused a reduction in power and engine overheating. Replacement was covered under warranty.
The temp sender on my 2003 volkswagen jetta failed for the second time. The first failure occurred at approximately 38,000 miles in 2007.

When i start my car, the engine idles inconsistently and the car shakes or stutters. If i begin driving normally one of two things will happen, either the engine will stall (happening more frequently lately) or the car will continue to have idling problems until it warms up. In the second case, the car will drive normally for about 15 minutes until i come to the first hill. If the car down shifts while going down a hill at lower speeds, the asr light will come on and from this point on the car has a difficult time shifting gears. The shifting is abrupt and the engine does not sound normal. If i stop, turn the engine off and turn it back on the car appears to function normally. To avoid the above problem, i do the following when first starting my car. I start the car, turn on the headlights and rev my engine to about 3000 rpm's. I hold this rpm for about 30-60 seconds and then i notice that the headlights flicker once and become stronger and the engine will then rev up another 500 rpm's on its own. At this point i usually do not experience the asr problem with the car. Problem first started in 2007 and persisted until 2010 when it was finally repaired.
The oil pump quit, causing the oil pressure lamp to come on.the vehicle is still under warranty, but since i cannot produce all of the receipts for oil changes since i purchased the vehicle, they will not cover the warranty.the dealer says that the failure was due to oil sludge.i was not informed that i had to keep receipts for oil changes durring the lifetime of the vehicle.

On march 1, 2004, i purchased and financed a 2003 jetta tdi from the vw dealership in chico, ca.i began to experience problems with my new vehicle in late november 2005, with mileage at 47399.i suffered intermittent loss of power when accelerating onto the freeway and in traveling up hills.during the loss of power, i also noticed that i could not hear the whine of the turbo and assumed that the problem must be related to my turbo.the chico dealer test drove the car for approximately 25 miles with a scan tool but was unable to verify my complaint.unfortunately, the problem with the turbo persisted.i brought my car back to the chico dealership on january 7, 2006, with mileage at 50856.once again, the chico dealer was unable to verify my complaint because their scan tool did not pull a code.the chico dealer stated that they would replace the mass air flow sensor in an attempt to resolve my complaint regarding the loss of power.the mass air flow sensor was replaced by the chico dealer on january 7, 2006.feeling defeated and frustrated, i suffered through the turbo problem for another year.during this time, i was forced to take extra special precaution when entering the freeway in case my turbo failed to respond upon acceleration.in addition, when i experienced a loss power traveling up-hill, i was forced to utilize my hazard signal and move to either the slow lane or the shoulder of the road to allow other vehicles to pass me.when my turbo failed to respond properly, my vehicle would only travel at a maximum of 45-55 mph when accelerating onto the freeway and 35-45 mph when traveling up-hill.needless to say, even large semi-trucks passed me traveling up-hill.the problem with my turbo jeopardized my safety and that of my passengers' as well as those traveling around us. This has gone on too long without the proper attention to my concerns and i feel unsafe while traveling in my vw.
I have noticed a burning crayon smell in my 2003 vw jetta for a few months. I have had the car detailed and had the dealer clean the ac ducts yet the smell remains - and gets stronger in hot/humid weather days.i see others have listed complaints of the same nature - and the sound deadener material under the carpet seems to be the culprit.i am concerned that this will affect breathing and could be toxic.
My water pump failed suddenly while driving, the engine overheat sign lit up.i was in the middle of nowhere.after a painfully long drawn out tow, taxi, rental car, and return to pick up the car 1 week later (drive 200 miles there and then back to do so), the garage which repaired my car indicated that there was a bad "design flaw" to the water pump where it had a plastic part that would commonly fail during the life of the car.they told me that this was a "well-know" problem in the jetta, many people had experienced & written online about it.they recommended that i install an "after-market" pump with all metal parts so that it would not occur again, which i did.my co-worker who owned a jetta a few years older than mine (2001?) for 10 years and later traded it in, informed me that she had the exact same problem and in fact had to replace the water pump 3 times during the period she owned the car.i would like to make a complaint about the water pump design in the volkswagen jetta.if it had been recalled & fixed prior to my breakdown, i would not have had to endure the whole ordeal i went through.

I have a piece of junk volkswagen jetta 1.8t that is a lemon.at 64,000 miles the fan shorted out and caused some problems to the tune of $800.then at 70,000 miles the air tubes melted making the car run terrible.that was another $600 dollars to fix.now at 71000 miles the heating and cooling system stopped working along with other electrical components.i have had it talking to the dealer and constantly writing volkswagen.there customer service sucks and they do not stand by their products.thank you, george and laura bogdan

My 2003 vw wolfsburg edition jetta continues to lose power. While i am driving the car will almost stall the power catches and powers back up prior to stalling. The lights interior and exterior go out, the radio turns off, the clock loses power, the engine loses enough power to not accelerate, but still does not stall. The power lose last for a few seconds. The interior lights also flicker. This happens several times every day. So far i have replaced the coolant fans and censor (1st diagnostic from vw dealership), replaced the 2nd coil (2nd diagnostic from vw dealership) replaced the ignition switch (lesueur car co), & replaced the control module (3rd diagnostic lesueur car co) when i picked up my car from lesueur car co i didn't get a mile away when the car lose power again.i bought this 2003 vw jetta from cardinale way of scottsdale last sept. (2007) i asked for a bumper to bumper extended warranty at the time of purchase. My car started losing power and when i took it to a mechanic i found out my warranty is not what i asked for. It'sjust a power/tran warranty which doesn't cover anything! i have spent almost $1300 in the last 2 months trying to fix the power lose problem and no one can figure out exactly what is wrong with my car?!?! everytime it gives a diagnostic error, we fix the error, and the car still continues to lose power! it has been in the shop at least 6 times, twice at a vw certified dealership and the 4 or 5 times at lesueur car co which is the largest non-certified dealership in az. I have contacted cardinale way and they are unwilling to help me with this matter. I do not know what to do??? i have 3 more years to pay on a car that no one can fix!! and i can't afford to keep fixing things that aren't the problem either! if there is anything you can do to help it will be very appreciated. Thanks
After taking my 2003 vw jetta 1.8l turbo to the vw dealership for a broken dipstick and ignition recall, i was told there was sludge in the engine in which the car had under 68,000 miles. The dealership stated it was not under the manufactures warranty and would cost at least $900 to clean out the engine. Upon deciding to take it to a mechanic for a 2nd opinion, the car seized up and ceased to work while driving.the mechanicinformed me that the entire engine was blown from the sludge build up when oil changes had been performed at 3,000 mile intervals though the manufactures owners manual stated it only had to be changed every 5,000 miles.the dealership stated there was nothing they could do about it other than for me to purchase a new engine or a rebuilt engine.after having a used engine installed from a salvage yard, i discovered from the car pouring smoke and making a high pitched whining noise. Apparently when the original engine went it also damaged the turbo as a result of sludge build up. I've further discovered after doing some research that this is a common problem to vw cars with 1.8 liter turbo engines from models following 2000. Unfortunately because the turbo is considered an accessory to the engine, the turbo was not covered under the salvage yards engine warranty i just had installed and would require the turbo being replaced as well.the vw dealership informed me that a rebuilt turbo would cost $1700 alone not including small parts and labor after i had already spent $2800 on a used 1.8l turbo engine and small parts and labor. The used engine had 46,000 miles on it so it is highly likely that it will also go due to engine sludge.
The drivers side motor mount broke, engine dropped and fell on the axle and broke it.
I started experiencing a hot spot in the driver's heated seat in the fall of 2012.i have to put a cushion between my right leg and the seat or it will nearly burn.i have also been having an issue with either the o2 sensor or catalytic converter whenever it rains and it's cool weather.the car will lose power, sputter and lurch until it has been running for a while then it acts normally.finally, for the past two months the rear door locks will not open with the keyless entry or by hitting the lock/unlock button on thedoor.i just reached the 100k mark and keep up regular maintenance on my car so i'm a little upset that things like this are happening so early.
Rattling noise in the engine, oil pump was not pumping oil and camshaft chain tensioner (timing belt) rattling from lack of oil.i was informed i needed to replace engine due to metal particles and carbon in the oil pan.
Water pump failure.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta.the contact stated that over the years her vehicle sporadically overheats.she took the vehicle to the dealer on numerous occasions and had the oxygen sensors replaced twice, the thermostat, the battery, the water pump, and the auxiliary water pump.recently, while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle overheated and was towed to the dealer.the dealer stated that the radiator fan, secondary air pump, and the power steering pump needed to be replaced at the cost of over $2,000.the technician added that if the repair was unsuccessful in remedying the failures, they may have to replace the catalytic converter.the manufacturer would not assist.the failure mileage was 63,126 and current mileage was 76,000.
2003 jetta gls; twice when running the ac the car suddenly overheats, fuse blows. The engine temp gauge goes far into the red zone. I turned on the heater to draw heat away from engine, air was so hot it literally melted the plastic water bottle in the cup holder. (didn't help my comfort that the outside temp was near 100 degrees and i'm driving along with sunroof open, windows open, and heater turned on high!)i was concerned that my leg was burned as well because the air blowing from vent was so hot. Ihad to idle the car every few thousand feet to allow car to cool enough to limp to service station. First time (july 06, car w/i warranty @ 32k miles), vw told me that the fuse was blown; they were unable to replicate and indicated that if it happened again they would need to figure out why. Second time (nov. 2007, car out of warranty @ 51k)), non-vw mechanic able to replicate and said that fuse blew because "cooling fans are drawing too many amps (up to 100 amps) when starting. When running they are still drawing 37 amps and should be less than 20 amps." although this has happened only twice, and i have yet to repair (too expensive at $800+and i'm unemployed), i live in great fear as warm weather approaches that i will be "burned" by this issue again. It's only a matter of time.
Problems with air conditioner on 2003 volkswagen jetta.*mrthe air intake duct leaked which caused white smoke to emit from the vehicle when parked after a 75 mile trip.the part had to be ordered.the a/c condenser leaked which caused the a/c not to cool the vehicle properly.the dealer surmised that the damage to the condenser was from an outside source therefore refused to replace it under warranty.
Check engine light during work out of state. Diagnosis at a service station indicated both electrical cooling fans had failed. I replaced them with aftermarket fans in order to drive the car home and immediately took to the dealer. Dealer replaced both fans and found the cooling temp sensor had been shorting out. I was charged over 900.00 for the fans and told they were not covered since i had put aftermarket fans on the car. I offered to give the dealer the stock fans so they could verify they were not working but they refused. Given i did not cause the oem parts to fail and made no modifications to the car or it's wiring with the temporary fans i feel this should be covered. Also, a search of online vw user groups indicates the problem is very common, (hundreds of identical reports on one site). I was also charged for the oem cooling parts which had failed such as temp sensor, temp switch and fan control module. For the record, i called vw and requested a tow to service and was told i would have to drive the car in.
A/c fan siezed, causing enough heat to start a fire. The shroud, upper radiator modlings, a/c hose, hood insulation and paint were damaged.
We purchased an 03 vw jetta wagon approx. 2.5 years ago. We changed the oil at the dealer every 5000 miles. We missed one oil changed and the engine stalled on the road. It was towed to a vw mechanic. We were told it a had total engine failure do to sludge-which they said was lack of maintenance. We paid 16,000 for the car, it had 40,000 miles on it, we put 20,000 miles on it. We contacted a lawyer and we were told there isn't anything we can do-it was sold as is. We contacted vw america and they told us jettas' don't have the sludge problem, it's the passat with the 1.8t engine that has the problem. My research shows it's the 1.8t engine that is the problem regardless of the car it's in. We have no recourse. The car now sits in our drive way with new tires and a broken engine. A new motor plus installation would cost more than the car is worth. Once again the working people get screwed.
2003 volkswagen jettacaught on fire while driving. A vehicle following my sons car on a major interstate (my son was out of state returning home) noticed smoke coming from under the car and blow horn and flickered lights. My son looked in his rear view mirror and saw smoke and immediately pulled off the road. The fire department was called by vehicle following. The jetta never lost power and when he pulled off the road and he had to turn the ignition off. The jetta was smoking and the fire started immediately and with in minutes full flames. There was a loud boom and it came from the front of the jetta. The fire department could not get the fire out and had to break through the hood. The whole front (engine area) was burned. The jetta was still under warranty therefore we personally went to the dealership to report (thinking still under warranty theywould provide a rental and want to investigate) all they did was refer us to volkswagen. I contacted volkswagen on march 27, 2005 and to make a long story short i had to report to my insurance. Volkswagen also told me that if it was a manufacturer defect.... They would only pay what insurance would pay???????my son also talked to the owner of the dealership and all that was said is he (the dealership owner) was sorry and good thing he (my son ) had insurance. The dealership didn't even offer to try and help us get back into a vehicle. There was no indication (no engine warning, no power lose, smell etc.) there was anything wrong. The smoke was going up under the jetta and out under the back. The blessing is the vehicle behind my son.... What if he hadn't caught my sons attention?????????? the auto insurance didn't cover for what was lost in the vehicle, just the jetta. All scheduled maintenance were done as recommended by volkswagen?????
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta.the contact stated that his vehicle stalls intermittently and the dealer cannot diagnose the cause of the failure.he has paid over $500 in repairs.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 62,000.
I am complaining about failure of the ignition coils on a 2003 volkswagen jetta ( ) with the 1.8 liter turbo engine.vw has already recalled a number of jettas of this vintage and with this engine for replacement of defective ignition coils.however, they have refused to pay for replacement of the coils on this car.one failed causing the engine to run poorly.the dealer recommended replacing all four coils at a cost of $384.48.the car only had 23,726 miles at the time of the failure.this defect can cause immediate engine failure.clearly, the vw dealer believed that the coils are subject to unexpected failure at low mileage even though vw of america refuses to recall the particular vehicle.
My 2003 jetta tdi was parked in front of my apartment building for approximately 40 minutes.when i went back out to the car to get in it, i found it withsmoke billowing out from under the hood.as i started to pull the hood release to investigate, i noticed flames.i did not open the hood and instead quickly called the fire department and they responded asap.by the time they started putting out the fire, flames were engulfing the whole windshield from under the hood.after the flame was extinguished in reignited and had to be put out again.the car is inoperable.i only owned this car for three months and it was not even due for its first oil change.now volkswagen (vw) is stalling and has not even been to the dealership to perform its investigation.i am very upset that after two weeks no one has given me a progress update.i am seriously considering seeking legal advice. *la
The check engine light stayed on while the car was in motion. When the car was idling, the check engine light blinked. I was able to drive it to fairfax volkswagen in fairfax, va to have the car checked out. Apparently there was a recall on the ignition coils, which had been out for over a year. I had no idea about the recall -- even after i took the jetta to stohlman vw for service on my audio speakers in the fall of 2004. They never told me about the recall and it should have been repaired at that time. Fairfax vw told me that checking for recalls is their first priority, and that is how the recall was brought to my attention. I am very displeased with stohlman, and the service, or lack thereof, i received.
Check engine light illuminated and there was no power to the vehicle.at highway speeds there was a severe vibration in the steering wheel. *mr this resulted in a complete lost of power and a replacement of the injector system.the consumer was told that there was muddy diesel fuel but couldn't produce the fuel filter to back up the claim.there was another incident where there was a puff of smoke and a lost of power down to 25 mph on the road.the engine had a #3 valve go through the piston and run up and down the crankshaft.the engine was replaced along withanother injector system and fuel pump was added.several weeks later, a high pressure oil line broke from the weld and spewed oil everywhere.the axle assembly and the transmission slave cylinder were replaced as well. *sc
Excessive buildup of carbon in the exhaust manifold leading to the failure of the car to start.this is a known issue among vw dealers with tdi diesels and there is nothing vw is doing about it.cost $700 to repair this.
10,000 miles, mil (malfunction indicator lamp) came on solid.after i was told that if the light was solid, the car was safe to drive.took car home and drove to dealership next day.after princeton volkswagen looked at the car, turned out to be that my 2003 jetta gls 1.8t that was less than 3 months old had a fuel leak!i was told that the fuel sender clamp was loose and hose was smoking.
While driving from pa to boston my car's engine broke down in what appears to be a common issue with the vw 1.8 liter turbo engines.the passat (from '98-'04) had an extended warranty on the issue because of this defect.i drive a '03 jetta with vw's 1.8 turbo engine, but because it's not a passat the warranty was not extended.i still have several months of payments on this car and it only has 70,000.all vw can/wants to do to help me is offer $1,500 in repairs or trade in.i'm looking at $7,200 and owe $1,600 on the car.
Vehicle being driven on a highway and motor "blew up".towed to dealership and told that it was faulty turbo due to sludge in the turbo.dealership denied any responsibility claiming it was owner's problem because synthetic oil was not used.
There was a large amount of smoke from the tailpipe right after the 75,000 mile cpo warranty ended.the smoke was caused by a faulty turbo.the turbo had been replaced at 49,000 miles and vw and an independent verified that the turbo was faulty.the dealership was asked to check the engine (under warranty) five times throughout the time after the first turbo was installed, they reported that all was fine.as soon as the warranty ended, they said that the turbo needed to be replaced.vw has shifted all responsibility to me.even though the car is burning oil, and affecting the catalytic converter, no warranties apply.the turbo needs to be replaced again, however, no one (including vw) can explain why it keeps failing, despite perfect maintenance.
Purchased a used 03 vw tdi on 04/05, had the warranty transferred and registered to me at vw. Brief random incidents occurred where throttle would not respond for 1-3 seconds when starting from a stop sign. (this could be detrimental to your health) vw dealer could do nothing without a fault code. This continued for 2 years and 24000 miles. On 02/04/08, i shut the engine off, did an errand, came out and restarted the engine only to have it idle rough then die out, during this time there was no throttle response. I restarted engine6-7 times, on the 8th time it ran normally. Next day same happened to wife. I loaded car onto a flatbed and delivered to vw dealer 60 miles away. They found the egr throttle valve stuck, removed it, cleaned out built-up carbon. This cost $370.00 we do not know if these incidents are related.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. The catalytic converter failed after being previously replaced under the warranty two years prior. The vehicle was unable to pass emissions. The contact stated the dealer could make repairs but at his expense. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired a second time. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileages were 100,000.
Car stared putting out alot of blue smoke from tail pipe on start up and gas milage was dropping 5-6 mpg and i thought that was alot for a diesel engine.car lost power at freeway speeds and would barely run.entire intake system to the head was full black sticky carbon choking the engine for clean air. Intake system had to be completly disassembled (maniflod, egr vavle, ccv tube) and cleaned of carbon, which by searching the internetis a very common problem with vw tdi 1.9engine.
Am radio not working. Fm radio has limited range.
I have a 2003 vw jetta gli vr-6.the air conditioner stopped working after it was nice and cold for about 5 minutes.hot air was blowing out of the vents.engine (coolant) light came on after about a 10 minute drive.the engine (coolant) gauge was almost in the red 260 degrees.i switched off the air, and the gauge went down a little, but didn't really cool off.the guy at the dealership explained if the engine starts overheating, the fail safe for the car is to automatically turn the a/c off in order to save itself from overheating to the point where damage would occur.after all day diagnostics, the dealership says the fuse box is melted due to an electrical problem.this, conveniently, is not covered by my gold plus extended warranty that i spent lots of money on.repairs so far will cost ~$800.they have to fix that before they can test to see if the alternator is damaged.both the dealership and the warranty rep say this is a very common problem with volkswagen cars.if it is common it should be recalled!!
I bought my car at the end of november.drove it off the lot with 9 miles on the vehicle.at the time of breakdown on july 25, 2003, the car had 10,900 miles on it.the current mileage on it now is 13,000 july 25th was a very hot day.i believe it was up to 110 degrees that day.i had noticed my car running at a substantial lower power than usual, but i assumed it was because of the heat and that i had my air conditioning on high.i had to do some errands in town then i headed home, which is about 30 minutes away from the tri-cities, at this time i did notice loss of power going up the on-ramp to the interstate, but still did not think too much of the fact.i was half way home when i noticed that my car was losing even more power, the cruise quit and my speedometer went from 75 to 50 mph and that is when i noticed that my heat gauge was extremely high.i also found it odd that the inside of my car had not cooled off, but was getting warmer. I headed towards the off-ramp and as i was down shifting and applying the breaks, my brake pedal made ;puffy-popping noise and then the brake pedal collapsed to the floor.i put the vehicle in neutral and pumped the brakes to get the vehicle to stop, when the vehicle stopped, i smelled heat, or like something burning.i thought it was a fire around town.pulling away from the off-ramp, i could not get any pickup speed with my car. The car felt like it was pushing to go forward and also pulling itself back at the same time, as the vehicle tried to pick up speed, it would pull back and forth.the gas pedal was all the way to the floor and i couldn't get any speed.i could only shift into second gear and the vehicle could only maintain 15 mph.as all of this was happening, i was turning off everything i thought took power, air conditioner was the first thing off when i startednoticing the car overheating and losing power, then the radio, these did not help.
Failure of door wiring harness. Does not allow me to drive the car - the engin will not engage due to the electronic failure of the door wiring harness. There should be some way to override the electronic failure so that i can drive it.
Out of no where my radio on my 2003 volkswagen jetta wagon stopped working. All i got was static on my radio. After reviewing several vw forums, i found out that my radio antenna had corroded inside. I took it apart and cleaned all the corrosion and found that the main wire on the circuit board was broke. I had to solder a new wire onto it. Many vw owners are complaining about this same problem, but volkswagen will not do anything about it. A antenna should not go bad in a three year old car.
Recently the radio in my 2003 volkswagen jetta wolfsburg edition stopped working. At first the radio station was displayed but i was unable to get any buttons to work except the eject button, the volume knob, and the on/off button. The last radio station i listened to was displayed but no sound could be heard. I started to look for help on the internet, possibly a fuse or something simple but what i found was completely the opposite. According to several websites, the radio has an internal defect which fries the radio when the battery starts to get weak. I work at a cadillac dealership so i tested the battery and it tested marginal.i checked with a couple vw dealerships and they both told me i would have to replace the radio. I just received my aftermarket radio, which i ordered after hearing horror stories of replacing the radio with an oem unit and having them go bad again the next time the battery went dead. I still have the oem radio, and will hang on to it for while.
While the consumer was jacking up the vehicle to change the right rear tire the jack collapsed and the vehicle fell to the ground. Consumer maintained that the jack was made of plastic and the thread stripped.
While using the lifting jack supplied with the automobile to lift the vehicle to change a tire, the jack collapsed. It collapsed because the jack screw carrier threads failed.the carrier threads nut is plastic.plastic does not have enough strength to support the weight of a 3000 pound automobile.
I have been pulled over by police multiple times over the years with this vehicle due to rear lights not working properly.at one point, both of my tail lights were not functioning -- this was very dangerous.i have replaced them each time and they seem to go out quite frequently.i have noticed tail lights being out on cars with the same make and model as mine.
My car got hacked my charlie miller and chris valasek was seen over at my neighborshouse on 4/29/2017 and my ex boss chris stutz jr is in charge of all the break in of my house and cars edwardsville police will not do anything because the police are friend of them i hope i don't get killed over these hacks but if that's what it will take to do anything about it
Driving hello all state route after dark at 55 mi./h the headlights went out completely and then came back on in a short matter of seconds. Had the road not been straight at that section i could have very easily collided with trees or guardrails. The 1st time this happened was 2012-08-01. I had the local volkswagen expert garage replaced the headlights stock. The next time that occurred was july 2018. This is a severe safety hazard i have not sought any repairs yet.
I own a 2003 vw jetta. I bought it on 09/02. Since then i have had a variety of problems. First it was my electrical. By brake lights stayed on and the key less remote did not work i could not lock my car and non of the interior and exterior lights worked. I took this problem to vw and the said that i needed to make an appontment before they would help me. So i had to drive home with all these problems and make my appt. This problem was fixed however occasionaly the brake lights still stay stuck on. This was also noted to vw. The second time i took my car in for a rattle in my clutch. I was told i would need to take my car on a test drive with a customer service rep (?). So i did and she stated she did not here anything and i told here that when i take the clutch out it does rattles very loud but when i push the clutch in the rattle stops. Customer service rep stated since she did not here this she could not let the actual tech look at it. I demanded the tech to look at it. Finally the tech and customer service rep told me i had a rattle in my clutch due to my bald tires.???? since i did need new tires, i replaced all 4. My clutch still rattled. (shocker) i then decided to take my vw to another vw service dealer, and they determined that the rattle was a loose heat plate. Vw dealer stated this was fixed. The next day this rattle was still there. I have taken this car in for a total of 3 times for this rattle. I have decided on getting a new non-vw car. Not only has the car dissappointed me but the servcie poeple have treated me and my husband like ignorant consumers. On each of these visits to the vw dealer they have ahd to keep my car for numerous days, and never was i able to receive a rental, which resulted in me missing work and costing me more money.*mb*
Brake light switch failed causing brakes lights to stay illuminated even when the car is turned off and the key removed.
I got my 2003 vw jetta in february of '03. Now not even a year and a half later i have huge problems with my car. My brake lights will randomly stay on even when the car is turned off. My windows do not always work properly. Finally the worst was that i was parked in my drive way, it is steep but the same place i have parked dozens of times, when the emergency brake let go in the middle of the night and my car rolled down the drive way eventually crashing into trees. I read on other complaints that there was one other person who had experienced the failure of the emergency brake and many others who had similar electrical problems. Well i called volkswagen about my brake lights and they said that indeed there was a recall on my car as a result of a failing brake light switch. Turns out they had failed to inform me. I wonder what other recalls they have failed to inform people about.
May of 2004, vehicle begins "lunging" when pressing the accelerator. According to dealership findings there was a tsb on this issue and software was outdated and updated by dealership. This seemed to have corrected the problem until october 2004 when the "lunging" began occurring again. According to dealership, a brake light switch code was found in the abs section of the computer and the switch was replaced to resolve the issue.march of 2005, "lunging" symptoms returned. Dealership claimed they could not find a problem this time. Reported same issue again september of 2005, issue not diagnosed once again. Brake and tail lights have been replaced at least 6 times up to january 2006. Dealership could not find any issues, but swapped circuit boards from one side to the other and checked resistance of the circuits. Swapped bulb sockets and claimed issue resolved. Reported same "lunging" issue as above, again february of 2006. Dealership claimed throttle body extremely dirty. Issue resolved for brief stint. June of 2006 tail lights continue to burn out. Dealership claims no issue found. May of 2007, brake light switch replaced under recall campaign. Light bulbs have not burned out since this replacement. Vw of america, inc. Refuses to pay for service charges incurred to swap circuit boards even though it is clearly due to faulty brake light switch replacement back in october of 2004 (same defective switch was used as replacement). There is a clear line leading to the switch being the cause of almost all listed problems. Once the recall was complete, the issues have ceased.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, the epc engine protection control light illuminated without incident.the vehicle was inspected by dealer who determined when the epc light illuminated; this was indicating the exterior brake lights were inoperative.there was a nhtsa recall, # 04v096000, regarding the brake lights.the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.the manufacturer was notified.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 60 mph, the brake lights were non responsive.the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who determined the brake switch failed.there was a nhtsa recall #04v096000 regarding the exterior lighting:brake lights:switch.the vehicle was exhibiting the same characteristics as indicated in the recall however, it was not included in the recall due to the vin.
2003 vw jetta brake light switch became inoperable. This caused me to have no brake lights. This almost caused an accident as a person traveling behind be did not know i was stopping.even more concerning is there is no indication light to let the driver of the jetta know this has happened. Vw had a recall on the 2002 model of this car for this exact same problem. Why not the 2003? it uses the exact same part!to see just how rampant this problem is just look at http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1158315&page=6.
Purchased new 2003 jetta may 2003.since that time we have had to tow the car twice and repair same part 4 times.it is the brake light switch that breaks which means the car can not be taken out of park.can not be moved unless it is towed or get it in when you first see it is going out yet again.this has happened jan 28, 2004, aug 2, 2004, may 31, 2005, and oct 14, 2005.twice it was serviced at the volkswagen dealership in san luis obispo and twice at the dealership in fresno, california.
Jetta brake light switch (on our invoice it is part no. 1jo-945-511-e") according to the service dept at commonwealth vw, this switch has been recalled as defective in other vw's, but not the jetta. When it fails, the brake lights go out and the car will not shift. I bought this car new for my daughter, m. B., the registered owner, and i do not like the idea that she is driving a defective vehicle to and from our home in villa park, ca. To school in riverside, ca. (about 60 miles round trip) daily, and at night! this part should be recalled from all vehicles.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta.while driving approximately 50 mph on normal road conditions; the brake warning light indicator illuminated on the instrument panel intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and the failure was contributed to the brake light switch.the vehicle was repaired; however, on a separate occasion the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for theidentical failure.nhtsa campaign id number 07v063000, exterior lighting, brake lights; switch was repaired per the recall. The failure recurred after the recall remedy was performed. The failure mileagewas unknown and the current mileage was 95,000.
I purchased a 2003 vw jetta tdi wagon about a year ago, used.this car has been really great to me thus far, until my glow plug light started flashing at me the other day. After checking the manual, which basically said there was an internal error, and not much more, i decided to check the internet for more information. The search results mentioned that it is most likely a brake light switch problem and either the brake lights stay on, or shut off completely. So, after my wife checked the back of the car while i pressed on the brakes, sure enough, my brake lights no longer work!i checked the web some more, and it looks as if there was a recall for 98-02 jettas for the very same problem.being that mine is a 2003, my car does not fall under the recall!i did some more searches, and http://forums.vwvortex.com i found this thread, which details a diy method of replacing this $10 part.i'd rather do this myself if i have to pay the dealership to what amounts to an extortion fee for this 5 minute job. In my humble opinion, i think vw should replace this part, free of charge.i really think there should be a recall on my jetta model because the failure of the brake light switch could cause a serious accident if people behind you aren't warned when you brake.the fact that the warning lights do not mention what type of a problem this is would further lead to more confusion.the fact that this problem makes my car illegal to drive because of the failure of the brake lights further complicates the process of bringing in this car to the dealership.
2003 vw jetta.brake light switch is broken causing the vehicle to be undriveable.also, the driver side windows keeps falling into the door.
Vw claims the exterior brake lighting switch isn't a recall item or problem but not only am i having problems with the one for me car but the other vw owners here at my place of employment have encountered the same problem as well.
Brake light switch failed, resulting in no brake lights.this was repaired by dealer only to fail again within a few days.when the brake light switch fails the brakes ether do not work or stay on when the pedal is pushed.also if the brake lights do stay on the accelerator is non responsive since it is electronically controlled.this same switch has been recalled in previous model years, the same switch is being used in this model.
I own a 2003 vw jetta tdi.on 10/17/2006 i was driving down the interstate at 72 mph when my glow plug light began flashing.i had recently replaced the glow plugs so i contacted the dealership.they stated that it was most likely the brake light switch.i was not told that this problem causes the brake lights not to work.i later found out that other vw jetta model years have the same defect and a recall has been issued for 99-02 models.apparently 03 models have the same problem but dealers are not informing their customers of the safety issues related to a malfunction in the brake light switch.
Driving on the highway at night i noticed that my cruise control was inoperative.i researched the problem when i got home on a vw related website and found out that this was most likely due to a brake light switch located under the driver near the brake pedal.when the brake light switch is not working it causes the cruise control to also stop working.what i also found out is that since this switch was broken all my brake lights were not functioning.there would have been no way for me to become aware that my brake lights were not functioning unless i had connected the problem by researching it online.this poses a serious safety risk for those who would not associate a cruise control problem with the brake switch and therefore be driving around unknowingly without brake lights and could cause an accident by not having the proper brake lights operational.fortunately in my situation it did not result in a rear end collision.i understand that vwofa has issued a recall for 1999-2002 models and i have a 2003 jetta.it frustrates me that vw is not responsible enough to extend this warranty to later model years as the part has not changed.in my opinion they wait until they get enough complaints for the newer years before they authorize recalls for those years.(the 2004's will fail later and so on and so on).the part number that failed on my car is 1j0 945 511 c (on my car, but current part number is f revision).i hope that this complaint will get vwofa to be responsible for this serious safety related issue.
2003 jetta gears will not shift out of park. This is caused by a plastic submitter that controls the gear shift and brakes.the consumer was told there was an open recall for the 2002 model but not 2003. The would like to have his paid bills paid that were accidentally placed in an envelope.updated 07/11/06.
Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 45 mph, the rear brake lights stayed illuminated without depressing the brake pedal.there was a nhtsa recall #04v096000, regarding exterior lighting:brake lights:switch. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the year.updated 08/1/07
My brake light swich has been replaced 3 times on my 2003 jetta tdi vw.failure of this switch causes brake light's to either stay on consistently or not turn on at all.loss of turbo in vehicle and can cause loss of power due to battery shut down.
I have been experiencing a problem similar to the recall on 2002 vw jetta's with faulty brake light.except i have a 2003 model.
The front headlight lenses have oxidized/deteriorated and has diffused the light to the point it is unsafe to drive at night. I had the lenses polished two years ago, and now they need polishing again. I don't feel that i should have to bear the burden of a safety issue like this.
*sc
Since the introduction of low sulfur diesel my injection pump has developed a leak !possible fire danger.
2003 volkswagen jetta developed problems with the vehicle stopping.***no answer required***. *mrwhen the weather is around 5 degrees, the fuel gels and the vehicle comes to a stop.this has happened three times. The consumer has out in duel additives but that has not corrected the problem.
Vehicle had sending unit replaced with a different design unit to address cold weather operating condition. Mfg,r has tsb acknowledging problem. Was charged for repairs car is 4 mos old. 2003 jetta purchased in sept.2003.
My 2003 volkswagen jetta experienced a fuel pump failure while driving in traffic. My vehicle came to a stop in front of the entrance to an alley. The vehicle would not start after the failure. The fuel pump has to be replaced, but was no longer under warranty at the time of the failure.
My 2003 volkswagen jetta's coolant pump failed while in traffic. This caused a reduction in power and engine overheating. Replacement was covered under warranty.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta.while driving 65 mph, the vehicle shut off.the contact was able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road and it restarted three hours later.one week later, the contact attempted to start the vehicle, but was unsuccessful.the vehicle was taken to the nearest mechanic and they stated that the fuel pump failed.nhtsa campaign id number 07v375000 (fuel system, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump) was referenced concerning the 2003 passats.the purchase date was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 46,000.updated 5/6/08 updated 05/06/08
Our jetta was rear-ended at a red light and the gas tank exploded, causing the car to become a fireball. The car was obviously totalled, and we lost all of our belongings inside the car.
While driving consumer smelled gasoline odor coming from the vents. Gasolinewas leaking from underneath the vehicle.consumer drove vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanicdetermined that the ring lock on the top of the fuel tank waswarped. This caused a fuel leak.
Gas gauge inaccurate despite multiple attempted corrections (fuel sending unit x2, instrument cluster, gas tank all replaced with no improvement).
Thank you.
While driving on the freeway my vehicle began to loose power and then just shut off. Looking at the fuel gauge i had a quarter of a tank left in fuel. Pulling to the shoulder of the freeway i attempted to restart my vehicle. After 5-10 minutes of trying to restart my vehicle, it started. I then drove to the nearest gas station and filled up my tank. A couple of days later i was driving on the freeway again and the same thing happened. The fuel gauge read a quarter of a tank left and had to pull over again to attempt to restart my car. This now happens every time the vehicles fuel level gets to a quarter of a tank. I'm left having to fill up my tank at that point, quarter of a tank, to avoid breaking down on the freeway or anytime while driving.
Transmission strained to shift out of first gear. Water pump went out cause car to run hot.. Water pump was replaced but blower head gasket.... Airbag light comes on and off
The car stalls while driving at any speed or while idling when the fuel gauge is around or under 1/4 of a tank.i have read up on this and people are dumping a lot of money onto trying to figure out what the issue is and there is no answer.stalling on a highway without a median or pull-off is not only inconvenient but dangerous.
My car got hacked my charlie miller and chris valasek was seen over at my neighborshouse on 4/29/2017 and my ex boss chris stutz jr is in charge of all the break in of my house and cars edwardsville police will not do anything because the police are friend of them i hope i don't get killed over these hacks but if that's what it will take to do anything about it
I own a 2003 vw jetta.
The safety light on the interior of the front passenger door that lights up when the door is opened failed on my 2003 volkswagen jetta. The dealer stated that the problem was a failure in the front passenger door latch mechanism. The door latch mechanism was replaced, and was not covered under warranty.
The rear door locks do not work with the key fob or the electrical switch ion the driver's door.this is a serious issue when you have children in the rear seat.

I have a 2003 vw jetta. On numerous occasions, when i start the car and get out to scrape the snow & ice off of the windows, the door locks engage and lock me out of the running car. Since i have just left my car to remove snow, of course my purse and cell phone are in the car, so i have to leave the locked car running while i knock on neighbors doors to call someone to bring me a spare key to my house, so i can get the spare key to my car. I have not had the locks repaired, but when i took my car to gebhardt vw in boulder for other repairs, i was told the problem is so common that the mechanics roll the windows down whenever a car comes in for service, to make sure they won't get locked out. The mechanic actually had a broken lock sitting on his desk, and showed me how the lock was supposed to work, but what it does instead.
I own a 2003 volkswagen gl 1.8 t, when i press the lock button, the car doors do not all lock, or will work sometimes, i also am not able to get into the trunk. Upon further research i discovered that this is more then a common problem with this vehicle, in order to get the trunk openi have to crawl through space and pull the emergency lever inside the trunk, in order to lock the car i have to manually push down the locks when the key doesn't work and 40 % of the time i or a passenger gets locked in the car, until it decides to give.

I feel this is a safety issue as the door are not closing properly.in case of an accident will the door hold in place?what happens if i install a roof rack and place a load in the roof?is the roof going to give in since it is missing the additional support from the doors?my main concern is in case of an accident are the door going to hold in place or are they going to fly of since the vibration "opening and closing" the doors? ts
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen new jetta. While driving in windy conditions, the hinge on the trunk fractured and the trunk opened. When the trunk opened, it slammed into the windshield, and caused it to shatter. The vehicle identification number was unavailable. The failure and current mileages were 70,000.
The consumer parked the vehicle on a 2 point grade, set the parking brake, and proceeded into his house.approximately thirty minutes later,a friend informed consumer that the vehicle had rolled down the street and collided with a tree.*sc
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. While driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle slowed down and would not accelerate. The failure occurred without warning on four occasions. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 64,000.
My transmission takes along time to shift to 2nd gear, wont p/u speed ,if you turn off car for a few mins sometimes it works better. Sorry its a 2003 jetta.
The rear o2 sensor on my 2003 volkswagen jetta failed causing the mil indicator to illuminate. The sensor had to be replaced, and is not covered under the extended warranty for emissions.
Bought this car october 2010 from berge vw az. I noticed a few months after i bought it that it intermittently would kick into gear. I called the dealer and ask about it and they said it was normal, never brought it in just talked to a friend of mine from the dealer. Turns out in nov 2010 they sent all vw owners extended warranty paperwork for the valve body on these jettas for the exact problems i am having. I replaced speed sensors and everything. No now i am being told its the valve body and i never got a letter and i just hit 102k last month but i am outside the 7 years. Vw knows this part goes bad. There should not be a year on it for vehicles like mine that have low miles! i can prove it was happening before the 100k miles. Help!
My 2003 vw jetta constantly gets stuck in park longest time has been 45 minutes my car has been into service 3 times and is still rough coming out of park also my cruise control has never worked i only have 6000 miles.
Engine casing broke where the motor mount connects, got that repaired. 2 days later while driving on freeway, engine makes loud noise and seizes.undriveable, wont start.
When the car is started and the engine is cold, below 190f, it will not engage reverse gear, all other gears will operate.after the engine reaches 190f, the reverse gear will engage.this car has a sealed automatic transmission so no owner maintenance is possible and fluid levels can not be verified.
According to a vw dealer, the catalytic converter on my 2003 vw jetta failed at 89,000 miles. The vw dealer stated that it failed because the mil illuminated and the car's computer shows code p0420. The dealer also stated that the vehicle is no longer covered by any warranty.
Having worked in vw dealerships my transmission control module is failing at only 130,000 miles on it which has been an ongoing issue and complaint by many. When it acts up it won't upshift or will drop down into low gear and one has to worry about being rear ended when this condition occurs.
The clutch on my vw jetta burned out on a major interstate and was a very dangerous situation. The car had 46,604 miles on it and should have lasted many miles above that but i have learned of 100'swho own the same car with this same situation.
Transmission sometimes just doesn't want to shift properly i was driving along rt 50 at 60 mph when the car jerks really hard and loss of power almost got ran over by semi called vw who is aware of valve body defect and they told me that it was indeed my fault for driving it like that it just happened waiting on call from vwoa probably will lead no where i want this fixed asked for help to get parts or ect i know there was open recall on this but my car exceeds year and mileage but a safety recall is just that so please research and see if it was preformed on my vehicle i am sure it was not addressed but they sent letters out for this mystery recall also i can lead to other internal failures of trans or replacement my speedo also jumps 10-15 miles up and down other times it will work you can contact state hwy patrol they can tell you even more about these problems.
No transmission filter .so there it is mr var no eont go in any gear.i went to chonge filter and after days of research found out they came w no filher and that my friend. Can not be justified. Every one has these problems whk owns one
I have a 2003 vw jetta tdi. I have always had it serviced on time and have kept it well maintained,i have 78,000 miles on it. The speed sensor in the transmission has failed and volkswagen refuses to fix it. I worry because the doors not lock correctly because of this and i am not aware at the speed i travel because the gauges have failed.my biggest worry is that if i were to have an accident the airbags would not work because the car does not know how fast it is going. If this were a normal item like breaks, tires or something that has normal wear and tear i would understand but its not. It is a mechanical problem what i vital function of the car. I really feel that vw should cover the cost or at least split it with me. What do i need to do?
The transmission in my 2003 vw jetta has not worked right since the 1st week after i bought the car. It shifts inappropriatley and hesitates when pulling into on oncoming traffic. I have been nearly hit by cars and trucks on several occasions. When going up a hill the car seems to downshift or skip a gear, this is an automatic transmission. Going 75 miles an hour recently the car seemed to down shift and i thought the car was going to spin around in the road. I was on the trans canada highway. Very scary. Whenusing the cruise control the car accelerates extremley fast. The car has been for transmission repair 6 or more times. Volkswagon is aware.
When pressing on the accelerator pedal vehiclehesitated. Consumer contacteddealership.however, dealership was unable to resolve the problem. Consumer's wife spoke to someone at volkswagen of america and said it was an inherent problem of the vehicle.also, dealer said that they can't fix the problem because the transmission is computerized and communicates with the engine.*la
Transmission will not engage while applying the gear shift. Driver was shifting fromdrive to park and gear were stuck, causingtransmission to shut down. Also, transmission coolant was leaking from underneath the vehicle. Dealer was aware of the problem.
While applying the vehicle in gear the reverse gear will stick and will not go back into the park intermittently.
Last january i bought myself a 2003 jetta straight off the lot brand new. Everything was going great up to october once the cold weather started to set in. The car is an automatic and when leaving it to sit for a period of time i would get in to drive the car and starting out when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear it would slam into gear. It was absolutly horrible and scary felt as if the car was going to bottom out. So i called the dealership and brought it in for a check, they told me there was nothing wrong with the car so i took it home again but the problemkept happening. So again come march i brought it back this time they had it for a whole wk and again told me nothing was wrong, so i brought it home again and again later on not even a week later it started to shift late again so i called again this time the service rep told me there was nothing more he could do for me. I called the vw company and they told me it was the wayi was driving the car "i was an aggressive driver". I called the bbb and opened up a claim and now again they have my car and i have a rental but again they are telling me there is nothing wrong with the car. Never once has anyone apoligized. No automatic should slam into gear when driving it. They have done nothing to even try to fix the problem. All they keep doing it turning it around on me as if it is my fault the way i am driving the car..i have done research on myvwlemon.com and i have found a million other customers with the same problem and informed barrys of this and they told me unless it is the exact same car same engine same style there is no case.. This is the absolutly the worst i have ever been treated from a company.
I am a resident of south florida and in the summer of 2007 , due to the fact my car has been reliable i decided to drive cross country to los angeles , i took all precautions prior to living, from oil changes , brakes , tire rotation and so forth.in oct. Of 2007 , i was in a fender bender in los angeles , which delayed my return to south floridain the accident they had to replace front end lights as well as my radiator.i once again took all precautions on the vehicle prior to my journey.as of mid november i was back in miami , no problems with the car , all is goodat that point the vehicle had approximately 72,000 or so .in mid march i noticed that when i started my car and try to accelerate the car , it would not surpass 15/20mph and it made a very strange sound. It would only function appropriately when the engine was @ 190.i have taken it to a dealership as well as another mechanic and they both have informed me that my clutch is worn out. I'm not sure why that is?i have done everything in my power to keep this car up to par , as far as maintenance .the dealer quoted me $5600 and the other mechanic $2500.this vehicle has had been amazing to me till now, i have a little less then 80,000 and would love to drive it too at least 160,000 , but the way this is going i'm afraid that will not happen .i have noticed several complaints on the issue.vw jetta station wagon - 2003 , turbo gls tiptronic - 80,000.
While driving my 2002 jetta tdi (29,000 miles), the automatic transmission locked up causing whiplash and almost a chain reaction accident to the cars behind me. After having the car towed to the dealership, i looked on the internet and it seems that this has happened to other people. This is a serious life threatening issue in my eyes. I am only seem to be sore, thankfully this wasn't more serious. I have attached my search results below.http://www.myvwlemon.com/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/search.cgi?action=simplesearch&searchin=all&forumchoice=all&searchterms=vw+transmission&booleanand=yes&searchdate=all&searchuser=&exactname=no&file=temp-2452984-214219-93b9.cgi&total=69&startat=a:*la

Vehicle experienced hesitation, keyless key battery does not work, epc light illuminated due to lost of power, jack fell while car was on it, and problems shifting the car out of park.*mrwhen the epc light illuminated for the second time, the dealer replaced the engine control module. At approximately 61,000 miles on my 2003 vw jetta glx (v6), i began to experience problems that seemed to be transmission related.this initially occurred in june of 2007.all except one of the issues were resolved by the wray vw in columbia sc.the ongoing and current problem i have is the car changes gears hard between 2nd and 3rd.the hard gear shifts happens 95% of the time the car changes between 2nd and 3rd gear.i had the transmission replaced a couple of months ago due to the fact the 2 vw dealerships deemed the transmission to be the problem.however, changing the transmission did not resolve the problem.my problem is still ongoing.
Intermittently, the vehicle would not shift out of park into any gear.the dealer replaced the shift lock solenoid.please provide further details.*mr
2003 vw jetta at 40k miles trans had to be replaced in feb 06, june 06 same symptoms, told by dealer not to be concerned that the sensors take time to adjust to new trans, emissions light on dealer saysnot to worry if it does not stay on, continue to call, with same response. Dec 06 car loses power on interstate takes two wks to make an appt to get into dealer, told it is now the transmission control module, vw will not warranty although this part was not chkd when trans replaced, told this part is the brain to trans it tells trans when to shift. Dealer and vw of no help. Looked at consumer affairs on the internet noticed huge amount of people having same problems as i same year same model. The ecm light stays on and is not emitting smoke.
On december 14th of 2002 i purchased a 2003 vw jetta from smith vw on kirkwood highway delaware.although they handled all my transactions and vehicle delivery poorly, i chose to overlook in thinking i will not be dealing with them again.since then, i have had the following problems with my car: in two separate incidents i had a flat tire.in one case the jack fell over while the car was on it due to high wind.these incidents took place in the winter when we had heavy snow.later i discovered that my tires were overinflated.i did not touch them since i bought my car and have been for an oil change a month prior at vw.i stopped going to smith vw and started using garnet vw after this. On the night of august 6th at 9:30pm i got into my car and i could not switch out of park.this was a scary situation because some frick was standing at my window asking me for money.he finally left, but i was stranded waiting for a tow truck.roadside will tow your car, but they do not drive you home. In mid august my keyless key battery did not work.i was in va at the time. On august 25th during rush hour my epc light came on resulting in sudden loss in vehicle power.luckily i was in an area that i could pull over.vw found nothing wrong with the car. On september 8th during rush hour again my epc light came on resulting in sudden loss in power.this time vw replaced the engine control module.at this time i also filed a formal complaint to vw corporation and also spoke to gm at garnet vw. On november 22nd i took my car in because of hesitation while increasing speed from 20 mph to 40 mph.a vw technician took a ride with me and agreed of the problem.i am schedule for service in december.this is delayed mainly due to my work schedule, but i have been experiencing this problem since my last visit.i will be sending you a follow up note with more information later this week.

Dear sir/madam,i bought volkswagen jetta 2003 wolfsburg edition on 08/30/03 at around 3.30 pm from classic volkswagen dealer whose physical address is 5474 s orange blossom trail, orlando, fl 32839. I paid $1500 (fifteen hundred) as a down payment and traded my old toyota camry le 2002.total dollar value $27060.02 while i was driving back to my home from my work on 09/19/2003 around 6:20 pm (i was driving on all america blvd in orlando, fl). I was driving between 30-35 mile per hour, i heard a loud sound from the engine of the car and car stopped. The mold (metal) which is about 4-6 inches long and 2-3 thick which is connected to the transmission of the engine and car was broken and the transmission damaged left axle (axle was broken) and few other parts are serious damaged. I complained this to the volkswagen manufacturer (volkswagen of america) on 09/19/03 through their website and also on 09/20/03 through their website and got case number assigned (reference number [xxx]). I follow-up with them on 09/22/03, 09/23/03 & 09/24/03 to check the status of the case, theyre still reviewing the case. Now i seriously worried about my safety while driving my car back on road. I requested volkswagen manufacturer (volkswagen of america) to refund my money back so i can make my own decision to buy another car which i feel safe to drive on the roads. Im now totally sacred to drive my car back on road which is serious damage. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
2003 vw jetta clutch and flywheel out at 47,962 miles. I am an experienced manual transmission driver. This is not my fault, and this is very premature for a clutch failure. The dealership wants $2088.00 plus tax for parts and labor. My dealership quoted me at $1400 back home, but im stuck in colorado waiting for the customer care to get back to me. Everyindependent mechanic i have talked to including vw certified; but not affiliated have told me that even the worst clutch -rider(which i am not) would have clutch failure at about 100,000 miles. Vw is toocheap to submit a recall for the clutch assemblies on their 2000-2004 vehicles. With the volumeof complaints all over the web and even on this site, there is no doubt in my mind that there is a serious problem that needs to be addressed, and im not just speaking about the extremely outrageous replacement and repair costs. Plus! they now use non- re-surface flywheels...
Complete clutch failure, (the car will idle in all 5 gears) suddenly that left my car disabled on the highway with my 2 y/o son in his car seat 30 miles away from anywhere.
Normal driving conditionsclutch burned out at 21,851 milesneed to replace clutch
I have a 2003 vw jetta tdi.at 29,000 miles the clutch failed in the middle of a highway in a blizzard.the vw dealer has not given me any information other than the clutch failed due to my driving and that it will cost $2000.i have driven a jeep wrangler over 100000 and never had a problem with the clutch.my family and i were in danger in the middle of interstate 70 for several hours.in addition to calling the vw dealer, i also spoke with 2 customer service representative who told me there is nothing they can do. I had the car in 2 weeks ago for another problem and the dealer never told me that my clutch was not funtioning properly. Vw sold me the car based on quality and reliablity in bad weather.they certaintly cannot back what they are marketing to consumers.i have never had such a terrible experience as this.i will be seeking legal action if i am not remibursed for my troubles.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta.the contact stated that she experienced premature clutch failure.the clutch was replaced at 34,000 miles.the current mileage is 34,489 and failure mileage was 34,000.updated 09/17/07
Complete and sudden failure of clutch, resulting in total loss of power in rush hour traffic.
Repeated complete clutch failure on my 2003 jetta. I am an experienced standard transmission driver and never had problem like this with any other car. The clutch seems to be of low quality and volkwagen is blaiming clutch failure on the driver - easy way out.
Blown clutch on new2003 vw jetta tdi 1.8.first occurance in august of 04 with 26,000 miles and again now in may of 05 with 40,500 or 14,000 miles to another blown clutch.i am not a teenage driver, i am 23 with excellent driving skills and have driven clutches all my adult driving life.there is something wrong with their clutch system.i have found tons of evidence in bulletin boards.vw is blaming this on poor driving skills and i believe this is a serious defect that occurs every 20,000 miles.consumers like me are gettign ripped off on this one left and right.you need to do something. This is no isolated incident!
Complete clutch failure on my 2003 jetta.i am an experienced standard transmission driver.

Driving along, clutch started to slip at about 25,000 miles, when taken to dealer they said the pressure plate is completely worn and its my fault, after much research this is quite common. I have gotten nowhere with customer service or any number of managers.
The clutch on my vw jetta burned out on a major interstate and was a very dangerous situation. The car had 46,604 miles on it and should have lasted many miles above that but i have learned of 100'swho own the same car with this same situation.
While proceeding to enter the highway, the driver heard a loud bang. The vehicle started to lose power. Took vehicle to mechanic, and he said that the bolts sheared off the from driveshaft to the transmission.the transmission, driveshaft, and the cv joints were replaced due to the incident. The vehicle started to have problems again with the front brakes, where the rotors were replaced again.(the problem returned again) *scc
My vehicle often will not shift into reverse.i have a manual transmission, and it will shift into the other gears, but often upon starting the vehicle, it will not go into reverse.*la
I began noting transmission problems with my car in february of 04.when i brought it to the attention of my dealership and vw of america, they both dismissed my concerns.the clutch was inspected in the spring but they could find no problem with it.my clutch has now failed at 18,600 miles and vw is refusing to repair it.i have never driven anything other than manual trasmission cars and have never needed to replace a clutch, even after 130k.the dealership has my car and refuses to repair it.i have no transporation as a result as they will not give me a loaner car while i wait for the factory customer service person to inspect the car.i have notified them that i will seek lemon law status if they fail to repair the car by october 8th, 2004.
I'm on 3rd transmission on my 2003 jetta tdi wagon in less than one year. Original plus two failures replaced.*la
Several problems with this car, and it's unfortunate.started about a year ago, at times my car will start at the turn of the ignition and sometimes it will not.i have also brought to vw's attention about my clutch, in particular is very heavy (i have always driven manuals) and again, at times i have difficulty shifting into 'r' and into '3rd' gear.i would have to return shift into neutral; step on the clutch several times and i am able to get into 'r'.as far as '3rd' gear, its pretty tricky(since i am moving!!!!) sometimes i cannot shift into 3rd gear, and literally have to down-shift and attempt 3rd again!!!!and now, my clutch is completely shot, with only 65,000mi on it.
2003 volkswagen jetta 1.8t wolfsburg editionpurchased used at 23,000 miles with a burnt out clutch.the clutch was replaced by the dealership in order to complete sale.at purchase we were assured the clutch would last and not be an issue.this is the only way the sale was completed.within 30,000 miles the clutch has gone out once more.the technician it was taken to reported that he receives at least 2 of the exact same car with the exact same issue per month.vw does not acknowledge that the pressure plate is defective and blames the driver.any clutch is expected to last at least 90,000 miles.both vw and extended warranties will not cover the repair which is being quoted at $1900- $2200.the part has been reported defective in previous models but is still not being corrected or acknowledged as a manufacturer defect, which it is.the pressure plate, flywheel, and clutch disc are under-rated for the vehicles stock horsepower.the identical parts are found in other vw vehicles with up to 80 horsepower less.the vehicle should have been recalled since the previous 2 models.the vehicles need to be recalled.when even a vw technician acknowledges that the parts are defective something needs to be done with vw america, requiring them to replace these parts at their expense with parts qualified to support the vehicles needs.
Problems with rear window defogger and transmission.*mrrear defogger didn't turn off. Consumer feared it would cause an electrical hazard. Transmission locked and wouldn't move to reverse. Transmission was repaired and failed again. Consumer was informed a new transmission and clutch was installed. On the day of purchase, consumer complained of the problem but the salesman stated he wasn't use to a manual transmission and ignored it.*ph
The clutch on my 03' vw jetta has been failing since day one , i now have 42,000 kms. When i bought the car. Reverse, second gear and third gear all have problems. This problem has been going on with every person with a manual jetta, especially a 1.8t. I think vwoa should recall the clutch and transmission and correct this problem. We spend hard earned money on our cars and do not deserve a problem like this on brand new cars.
On four separate occasions, my car's manual transmission shifted out of gear .the first incident occurred july 7, 2003 when the car stopped moving in the middle of an intersection.this was "repaired".the second incident occurred when i was trying to shift the car into drive - it actually was in neutral (despite the indicator stating drive) and i rolled back in the parking lot.i needed to bring it it, again, because the problem persisted.the third time it would actually go into reverse, instead of park.when i tried to park the vehicle i had to park it in "reverse".i while i was driving it it shifted from drive into neutral.it is in the shop for the 3rd time.it has under 4000 miles on it.
- the contact owns a 2003 jetta jls.while driving at 60 mph the contact's vehiclewas cut off by a truck and lost control of the vehicle.the vehicle proceeded down an embankment, flipped over sideways, and end over end, landing upside down in a canal.the driver was pulled from the wreckage and it became submerged.there was damage to the doors, the rear and the front.the air bagside/curtain, frontal airbags failed to deploy, and the seat belt failed to work properly during the crash.the failure and current mileage were both 35000. The driver sustained a broke nose, as well as, other injuries.
My car driver seat is burned with some smoke because of faulty seat heater.
My 2003 jetta seat caught on fire while driving home.i was using my seat heater at the time. I was burned on my leg.
I use my heated seats almost daily in the winter months.i used it this morning for about 20 minutes as i drove from home to the gym, then another 10 minutes as i drove from the gym to the store.when i got into my car after the store, it was still on the same setting (5), i had driven about 50 yards in the parking lot, when i felt a sharp pain in my left upper leg/butt.i moved slightly, then began to smell smoke.i felt around with my hand and felt the "hot" wire and the hole in my seat.it took me a moment to realize what it was, and then i immediately turned down the heated seat to off, thereby preventing further damage and pain.luckily there was limited damage to my clothing and i was not seriously injured, but had i been driving on the highway, or not been able to figure out what was causing the pain so quickly, there could have been more severe consequences including injury.
My 2003 jetta driver side heated seat is failing. The problem started in january 2011.the driver side heater coil was recalled back in 2007 and had been replaced through the recall, however, the replacement part is faulty as well.this time, the heater coil has burned the leather seat and burned a hole in my north face down coat. Luckily the coat is thick so i did not get badly burned.i had contacted volkswagen directly after this assuming they would replace the heatedseat coilsince the initial replacement from the recall was bad, they were not helpful and said the car was past warranty.which it was by about 3 months.however, given the situation of a prior recall and replacement of the part with another bad part, i expected more from the company.i then went to my dealer who charged me $120 "diagnostic fee" to tell me the heat seater is faulty.they told me to take it up with volkswagen.a second call and email to volkswagen lead no where. This is a dangerous issue and replacement of one bad part with another bad part is not responsible.i see there are other complaints and investigations active on this same make, model and year car. I would like a credit for my diagnostic fee which anyone could see was a faulty seat based on the burn, and i expect volkswagen to pay for a replacement seat cover and pad and bolster heaters as the seat is not usable as is and if it is used creates a very dangerous situation.
2003 volks jettapassenger side heated seat stopped working, and the driver side only has two postions...burn your butt or off.could have been a dangerous situation had i been on a hwy at hwy speeds. *ln
Heated seats melted a hole in the leather and burned my butt. Very very hot. It smelted like burnt rubber and smoke inside the car.
My drivers side seat heater doesn't recognize the setting of 0-5. It's either on, or off. Meaning, 0-4 the seat heater doesn't heat the seat. But when i turn it to 5 on the setting within 10 minutes the seat gets so hot it burns my legs through clothing.
The heated seats im my 2003 vw jetta started to catch on fire.

Drivers side heated seat burned hole in seat fabric and burned pants and right leg. Local dealership stated "no recall issued for this vehicle".
Updated 05/20/09updated ivoq 05/27/09.
Thank you.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta.the contact stated that while driving 40 mph, she smelled something burning.after inspection, she noticed a hole in the seat from the seat warmer becoming excessively hot.the dealer advised the contact to notify the manufacturer of the failure.the manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer for diagnostic testing.the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired.the current and the failure mileages were 134,000.
2003 jetta seat fails in rear end accident.
When the seat heater is turned on, the seat catches on fire. When you look at the picture that is smoke coming from the seat, the holes were caused by the seat heater.
I currently own a 2003 volkswagen jetta.passenger seat heater gets extremely hot and very concerned due to burn risk to children as well as possible fire hazard.
The heated seat on the passenger side of our 2003 vw jetta tdi got very hot on my right leg, i reached down to feel the seat and it burnt my hand.we turned on the lights and the seat had a burned hole with smoke coming out of it.had i been wearing my coat it could have caught fire before i felt the intense heat.

Subsequent attempt at use resulted in the heating coil burning through the upholstery. Pictures attached. I have discontinued use and learned there is an expired recall for this as a know issue.
After noticing for weeks that my heated seats would only work when turned to 5 (passenger seat doesn't work at all), my leg began burning while driving. I smelled something burning and looked down to see that there was a hole in my seat and there was smoke coming out of it. I immediately turned the seat off and haven't turned it on since. When i contacted vw, they told me that my vehicle was not included in the heated seat recall and that i would be responsible for the cost of diagnosing the problem as well as for the repairs.

Shortly after turning the drivers seat heater on, operator smelled something burning and felt her left leg burning.shut heater off and took to dealer, who acted surprised that we had a problem!!they charged us to look at the seat, claiming the power supply wire under the seat had been pulled apart shorting out the grid wiring.long story short, they claimed something must have been jammed up under the seat causing the problem.they offered to do the necessary repairs for $630.i thought their answer was creative, but after reading all the other complaints which are virtually identical(quarter sized hole in the seat cover), i'm calling [xxx].i am disgusted with how vw has responded to all of us.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The heated seats im my 2003 vw jetta started to catch on fire.
I own a 2003 jetta tdi wagon and my front seat heater has burned through the seat.

In december of 04 the drivers seat caught on fire in my 2003 volkswagen jetta glx.i had the heated seat on when i noticed the seat was getting extremly hotand started smoking.i was on a busy four lane road and unable to pull over at the time.once i did pull over i jumped out of the car to survey the damage.i had managed to burn the tips of my fingers and my "rear end".vw replaced the seat under warranty after i waited almost a month for the seat to come in.needless to say i was very irate at the dealership and was told by the service advisor that "i was over reacting".i called vwoa and reported the problem but they too did not seem concerned.i did my own little research and was able to come up with a couple hundred other cases of seats catching on fire in volkswagens.this is a serious problem and volkwagen doesnt seem to care, someone can get seriously injured if not killed by this problem.
2003 volkswagen jetta gls velour heated seat malfunction.burned a hole in car seat, through my coat and scorched my pants.also burned finger.volkswagen is fixing the problem and has offered to reimburse for coat and pants.all is done at no charge.

I have had this car since 10/31/02.i purchased it new.i bought it for my teenagers to drive as they begin since it is a safe car.last weekend, (12/17/05) i was personally driving the car, and the seat warmer on the driver's side got so hot that it actually burned a hole in the seat, and the car smelled terrible for several days after.i think that having to fear an electrical fire in my car is outrageous.
Sunday evening i left my house to run out to the local convenient store when the driver seat of my 2003 vw jetta caught on fire. The heat settings run as high as five, my setting at the time was on two. I felt heat generating beneath my rear-end and when i lifted my leg to look below me, i saw and felt the flames beneath me. Trying to put the fire out, which by the time i'd got pulled over to the side of road had burned through my jacket and pants, i'd burnt my hand in an attempt to squoosh the fire between the seat and the cushioning. Not a pleasant experience. The seats are 'velour'. This is my third and last jetta. My previous jetta had the heated 'leather' seats package and i'd never had this experience. The dealer was kind enough to replace the heating components, cushioning and seat cover. (sarcastically speaking) however, i do not feel confident in my vehicle, much less volkswagen. Very disappointed.
My jetta's seat heater has shorted out and burned through the cover.volkswagens reply is that there are no replacements seat covers anywhere in the country, and that they have no idea when they will get some.i have been in contact with them regularly since mid-december, and the hole with exposed electrical wiring has been there since then.the only response that vw gives, when told about smoke and sparks shooting through the hole burned in their seat, is to shut it off; the smoke should stop.they don't know when new seats covers will arrive, but claim that eventually there will be .the vehicle is leased and under warranty.
On early morning start-up, the seat heater was turned on.within about 1 minute it began to smolder, melting the seat foam cushion and burning a hole in the upholstery fabric and my trousers.had i not quickly turned off the heater, it may have started a fire.i contacted vw of america.they took my information and repaired it at their expense through my local vw dealership.
On monday morning i noticed that my seat warmer was burning the left side of my butt. I didn't notice anything at that time. On tuesday morning, my seat was smoking and it burned a whole in my leather.when i called the dealership, they told me they had seen a couple of these incidents.said i would need to bring my car in and leave it or wait 45+ minutes for them to take a look at it. I complained that i can't miss work, and i need a car that i can rely on to get me back and forth. I asked for a loaner for the day, to which they responded no. At this time, nothing has been done, and i am still driving with a defective seat warmer.
Drivers side heat seater failed about 2 months ago.it got hotter than normal when on setting #3, i turned it off, and from that point on it didn't work.two days ago, i had the drivers side seat heater replaced at the kaiserslautern, germany vw dealership.while driving home from work, the seat became extremely hot while only on setting #2.it was so hot, that i smelled something burning, and could not sit down while driving because of the extreme pain to my buttocks.i reached down with my hand to confirm the heat and also burned my hand.note that i was only running the seat heater on level 2 of 5 for approximately 5 minutes.upon inspection of the seat, there is now a hardened plastic feeling area where the leather on the seat was the hottest.had i not immediately turned off the heater, it is very likely that the entire seat would have caught on flames.additionally, since this occurred while driving and i was unable to properly sit in the seat, an accident could most certainly have occurred on the spot.i immediately spoke with the dealership and they said they will replace the heater but not the seat.they say thedamage to the seat is not extreme enough to replace the entire thing.however, i feel it is their obligation to replace it because the damage was caused by their installation of a factory item that has already failed once.
I was driving down the road and had just cut on my heated seats in my 2003 volkswagon jetta and noticed that my seat was getting very hot on the left hand side.i could not figure it out and could not see b/c it was dark.i started filling around in my seat and felt a whole and it burned my finger.i had no idea what it was.i started smelling smoke and so i turned on my light in my car and pulled over immediately.my seat started smoking out of the whole.i tried to see closer what was going on and noticed sparks coming out of the whole.the only thing i could think of at that moment was my heated seats.i turned them off and the sparks went away.i now have a whole in my seat the size of a nickel.it is still under warranty and i am taking it in on monday, however after reading many websites about this particular problem in 2002/2003 jetta's i am not so sure that volkswagen will stand behind this problem and that they try and blame it on the driver messing around with the grid which is next to impossible.i am writing in advance and calling as well so it is on file that this happened.i found the coil in the seat that was not protected by anything and looks to be what was causing the sparks in my seat.
At approximately 5:15 am this morning i started my car and turned on the driver's side heated seat.after waiting approximately 2 minutes for the rpms to drop below 1000, i placed the vehicle in drive and began heading for work.i immediately smelled something burning.i traveled less than an 1/8 of a mile to a stop sign.after stopping the vehicle and placing it in park, i opened the driver's side door, pulled the hood latch, and quickly stepped out of the vehicle.i left the car running and the driver's side door open while i opened the hood to inspect for the source of the burning smell.after approximately 2 minutes of inspection i determined that there was nothing burning in the engine compartment.i closed the hood and while standing at the front of the vehicle i noticed smoke coming from the driver's seat.i immediately ran to the driver's side door and discovered a small fire in the front seat.i turned the vehicle off, turned the driver's side heated seat off, and managed to extinguish the fire.this has been a very traumatic event.reflecting on the typical usage of the heated seats by myself, or worse yet my wife, the outcome could have been catastrophic.the seat was literally on fire in less than five minutes.i can not imagine what the outcome might have been if this had occurred during rush hour traffic.if i had not exited the vehicle to inspect the engine compartment, i would have suffered burns. After talking to customer service i was informed that there was a recall on the seats.i have had my vehicle serviced at the volkswagen dealer that i purchase the vehicle from since day one and they never did any recall work on the seats.i searched your sight for recall information on my vehicle and there was no data.i wanted you to be informed.i would hate to find out that someone was burned in there vehicle during normal operation.

I own a 2003 vw jetta 1.8t with front heated seats. Drivers side seat caught fire due to a short in the seats heater 2 days ago on 12/13/2005 after the heater was on for less than 2 minutes. Burning a small hole trough the seat to the bottom area of my left side (buttock)i have come to find since this happened, my nhtsa has been investigating 2002, 2003 vw jettas for seat fires with this exact problem for over a year now.why, as the original register owner of this model was i not informed of this investigation and the possibility of a fire inside my car, while me, my wife and my 5 year girl are in it!the problem with the above is that it was not a possibility, it just was a matter of time and in my case, the time was december 13th at approximately 7pm at night.this car has been a problem since the first 3,000 miles, with water pumps and door latches, firmware updates, violent shaking of the vehicle in cold weather starts, electrical problems ranging from entirely immobilizing and stranding me to the car partially being immobilized the vw jetta to automatic transmission shifter issues which include the cars shifter being able to be moved when the key is not even in the ignition to a position in the shifter selector because a cable was never connected to prevent that, that should also be a nhtsa safety issue too on this car. But first i want you for the love of god contact the owners of these cars before real tragedy happens if that all ready has not happened. I have just talked volkswagen customer care advocate at vw america, they have not warned their customers of this, who will. Again since this has happened i see many people on the internet have experienced the same thing.please notify the owners first, then contact me second. Please!

I currently own a 2003 volkwagen jetta and have been driving it for 2 years.i live in michigan and as a result use the seat warmers regularly during the cold winter months.i have never had a problem or any complaints until yesterday.i drove about 1 mile and had the seat warmer on 3, which isn't the highest setting, and my seat caught fire.i had to pull over to the side of the road, get out, and proceed to stomp out the small ember burning.i know have a dime to nickel size hole in my driver side seat.
On the evening of october 30, my 2003 volkswagen jetta vehicle driver seat and my coat caught on fire, beginning to melt my pants to my skin. Once i realized the problem, i moved through traffic to find a safe place to park my car.i turned off the seat heater and engine heater, and waited some time to reenter the car.on friday morning, i showed a mechanic the problem and he said i must take the car into the dealerhsip immediately.after several calls to dick hannah volkswagen (dhvw) dealership and volkswagen usa, dhvw fixed the seat heater defect and provided a contact to volkswagen usa. Dhvw provided mediocore customer service, lacked willingness to fully discuss the problem without repeated prompts, had no idea whether this defect has been found in other volkswagen vehicles and would not provide any compensation.ultimately, i am a very unhappy dick hannah volkswagen customer, with a car that makes afraid to drive with the seat heater feature, no compensation for my winter coat and pants, time from work and stress.*la

I was driving my leased, 2003 volkswagen jetta, (equipped with cold weather package), on a very busy road in late afternoon on a cold autumn day just outside of boston.i turned my driver side seat warmer on the highest level, (5) and in about 5 minutes i felt a sharp pain on the backside of my left thigh and thought something had stung me at first.i repositioned myself in the seat, and could smell something burning.i looked down and saw dark brown smoke pouring from the seat and realized the seat was actually burning me.i immediately turned the seat warmer off, pulled over, (again in very busy traffic in watertown, ma), and got out of the car to find a dark brown, dime-sized burn mark in the seat!!!the heat actually went through the seat and burned a small brown mark into my blue jeans and subsequently, left a small welt on the backside of my thigh.i am scared to drive the car now because i am not sure if there are other electrical defects with this car that may put my life, and my passengers lives in danger.i have contacted the dealership i leased the car from and they seem very eager to replace the seat and to clear this matter up immediately.

We purchased a brand new 2003 vw jetta in june of 2003.i have had no problems with the vehicle until yesterday, 11/28/04.we could smell something "hot" and burning.the drivers seat caught on fire from the heated seats, there is a hole in the seat and my boyfriend burnt his hand.within minutes of that happening, the passenger side door window just fell down.i've never seen anything like this before.somehow, the window is no longer in it's track.i have been doing some research online and finding many more instances with the windows falling and the seats catching on fire?what is the deal? this is very unsafe.i have my appointment tomorrow with our local vw dealer in erie pa to see what they will do to correct this.i want both seats looked at....i do not feel safe in my car any longer!!!
This morning, 4/5/05, i turned on my heated leather seats in my 2003 jetta gls and in a matter of about a minute, i felt something extremely hot on my leg.i immediately lifted myself up from theseat but it was too late.i looked down and there was a hole burnt into my leather seat, smoke coming from the seat and a burn in my pants...not to mention my skin.what i find disturbing is not that it happened but the fact that i took my car in last thursday and was not told about the problem even though a recall had already been issued.if vw had been proactive, i would not have had this injury and property damage.
Heated seat warmer on drivers side front seat of my 2003 volkswagen jetta caught fire while i was driving, burning both the seat and my body. No repair as of yet.
Back in 2007 recall for heated seats in volkswagen's.
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. While driving approximately 65 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle was hesitating. While attempting to pull over and applying pressure to the brakes, the vehicle would not stop. The vehicle hit a boulder and flipped over. The contact sustained several bruises. A passenger sustained a fractured wrist and ankle, seat belt rash, and bruising. The vehicle was destroyed. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified. The current and failure mileages were approximately 110,000. A police report was filed.
My wife's 2003 vw jetta tdi brakes will aggressively lock-up when lightly depressed for slowing down or coming to a slow stop. The problem is intermittent and will occur without warning. When the brakes lock up they can only be released after placing your foot under the pedal and forcing the pedal backwards. In the event another diver follows too close, the failure will result in a rear end collision potentially causing serious injuries to both parties. After experiencing the defect the car was immediately taken to the vw dealer for service and we received a "no fault found report". Now the problem has become severe and is a major safety concern for my wife and i. Earlier this year, the alternator pulley bearings seized and the pulley was ejected from the alternator causing damage to other engine components in the serpentine system.
While driving 25 mph in inclement weather consumer applied the brake pedal and the brakes failed.this caused the vehicle to crash into a tree.upon impact, both frontal air bags failed to deploy.vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection.
While braking 55 mph vehicle jerked, causing extended stopping distance.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Whooping noise from brakes of new vw jettta with poor compression and braking.clunking form gear box. Failure of brake may lead to avoidable accident in the future dealer changed brake booster but this did not help. Dealer unable to fix after several attempts.
Vehicle was towed twice because the defect described in the abs ecu recall 02v03100 occurred while driving. This vehicle was not includedin the recall due to model year and vin.
Starting car in the morning or at end of work dayandbrake warning lights came on. Car cannot be moved - brakes have hissingor whisking sound when pressed.car cannot be driven, unless turning ignition tofirston position putting car in neutral then starting the car.2.brakes do not work properly - car is unsafe to drive3.dealer claims that there is some sort of brake switch that has a "universal recall"that is causing the problem.i did research before buying my '03 jetta and found that several complaints about brake failure and brake problems have been on-going.when i questioned the dealer they knew nothing of the sort and said "if there had been problems in the past they have been fixed."apparently these problems have not - i continue to experience them as have other jetta ownerswith whom i have spoken.
Hmm.
Okay, i have had my 03 jetta for one month and two days (i received it on june 29th). It has already been in for service for the following reasons:july 8th:-a/c vent made loud noise like something was stuck/flapping around in it- condensation in drivers side headlight-pulled to the right-made a moaning noise when i turned left, gradually worsened to make the same noise when i turned left.*vw had the car at that time for two days, then called me to tell me that they were stumped about the moaning noise and that they wanted their head tech to look at it. However, he happened to be on vacation so i would need to bring it back in. But they added that they did inspect the car as far as safety was concerned and i was good to go.july 24:-car brought in for the second time for moaning noise when turning*vw called me that afternoon stating that since the last time i had brought it in a service bulletin had been issued for my problem and all they had to do was drain and replace my transmission fluid and the noise would be gone. I picked up my car that evening and 1 1/2 hrs later i heard the noise again, not half as loud or as noticeable but it was still there and it again was pulling to the right. I immediately called and left as message with my service advisor that night and called my salesperson in the morning. I had to wait one more week until they could get it back in again.july 30-present ( they still have my car!)- returned car for the third time for moaning noise when turning-still pulling to the right-paint on hood had a noticeable 3d effect & hairline scratches that were not just caused by a bad detailing job-the night before this my brakes started pumping when i would slow down from 60 mph to get off onto the on ramp to get home, which i didn't think was normal. T*vw said my rotors were warped so they had to replace them.*ph
To whom it may concern:my name is [xxx]. I own a 2003 volkswagen jetta tdi that i purchased new on 3/10/03 from autohaus of lancaster in lancaster, pa. It now has 56,700 miles on it. (mostly highway) while driving on 6/21/05, i went to apply the brakes and the brakes got mushy and then grabbed and the pedal went to the floor in a sudden stop. As it was stopping you heard a sound like the vehicle now had air brakes.i depressed the pedal again the brakes let up. I was nearly rear ended by a truck the first time it happened. I pulled off the road and called the garage. It turned out to be a brake booster. Prior to this problem, while the vehicle was still under warranty at 48,000 miles, i had the vehicle in for service at the dealership where the vehicle was purchased. It was in because several times i applied the brakes in the snow and the tires locked up. This vehicle has anti-lock brakes. At this time the anti-lock brakes did not work. This happened several times. The dealership found no problems. They checked it and said all was ok. It happened again about a week after i got it out of the shop. My current mechanic (roberts automotive) who specializes in volkswagens mentioned that he believes that two problems are very likely the same problem. The mechanic ([xxx] @ roberts automotive) also told me that he called the local dealership (autohaus of lancaster, pa) for the part, and he was told they replaced 8 of these brake boosters in the last two years. I also talked to the service manager at autohaus. Dave told me they have had several brake boosters go bad on the tdi models. The vehicle is now in the hands of autohaus. It sounds to me like there is a problem with quality and workmanship here. This is a definite safety issue. By sheer luck i was not hit by that truck. I will be sending a similar letter to volkswagen of america with my complaint.thank you for your cooperation. I recently bought a brand new 2003 vw jetta tdi at the end of november.on the day of the incident my car first started losing power, i noticed the pick-up wasn't as good as normal, secondly i started noticing the heat gauge went up as my car started over heating, thirdly i was almost home going down the off-ramp and when i put my foot on the brake to stop, the brake made a popping noise and then the brake hit the floor.i pumped the brakes and put the car in nuetral and was able to stop, as i began driving the car would not pick up any power and it felt as if the car was pulling against itself, i could not even get my car to go above 15 miles an hour in second gear.i drove the rest of the way home in 2nd, and with no brakes.when i made it home i thought there was a fire under my car because of how hot it was, the smell of burning was awful and as i got out of my vehicle there were chunks of creamy grease dripping from my car.i called roadside asst. And had them come to my house and tow the vehicle to a local dealership (overturf volkswagen).after several days of trying to find what the problems was overturf decided they could not find a problem with my vehicle.my husband and i had to force them to look into the braking system.overturf explained to us that what happened to me out on the highway was typical and not to be concerned, i knew differently and enforced the fact that they needed to check the braking system.after several hours of debating over the fact that the breaks didn't need checked, they test drove the car again and the car reinacted the problem. In the end, my brake booster and master cylinder had to be replaced.luckily my car still is under warrenty, but the car only had 10,900 miles on it, something like the whole breaking system should not fail with as little as mileage as the car had.one week later the car gets picked up and the next day my cruise will not set.i now have another appointment to get my cruise control fixed.
June 24th, while i was driving my four month old 2003 jetta tdi on thethe highway at a 70mph, the cruise control failed to engage.after the car had stopped and began moving again the cruise functioned properly. Two days later on june 26, 2003, while in lunch hour traffic-with a co-worker in the car the brakes automatically engaged by themselves at 40 mph.we stopped on a dime and were almost rear ended.this occured over 10 times before we got back to the office (we were less than two miles away). Dealership is replacing brake booster and master cylinder and i have requested full warrenty on new brake system from volkswagen of america.this is a potentially serious flaw that could have eaisly caused bodily injury.i have yet to learn if there is a track record of the brakes failing on the 2003 designs but wanted to begin a documentation record.

I own a 2003 vw jetta tdi.six months ago the clear coat started peeling from the hood and now it is peeling everywhere.i spoke to vw customer care and they said out of warranty, too bad.less then 7 years old.at least gm paint jobs don't fall off the minute the warranty runs out.the only good thing is i drive it around with a sign stating, "don't laugh, your vw will look like this soon".
Engine mounts and transmission mounts broke and caused car to crash.also injuring my daughter.
Continuous leaking of water into interior of car from currently undetermined source(s) causing mold/mildew problems.occurs during/after rain events.
Rattles throughout the interior such as the speakers, dash board, and area where the emergency flashers and center air vents are located.dents on the vehicle from the service center, i have a friend with a vw that has the same dents on his vehicle located underneath the doors on both sides of the car.skid plate underneath the vehicle designed to protect the under parts of the engine nearly came off, several bolts missing, needed to duct tape it to make it home.bolt fell out of door and side blinker leaked water inside which was fixed a while back.several small annoying problems.*nlm
The clamps on the front driver's side window of my 2003 vw jetta detached leaving the window stuck closed.
2003 jetta's clearcoat is peeling off, it started on front hood and now it is peeling all over the car. Called volkswagen they said it wasn't their problem. I think it is!!!

I feel this is a safety issue as the door are not closing properly.in case of an accident will the door hold in place?what happens if i install a roof rack and place a load in the roof?is the roof going to give in since it is missing the additional support from the doors?my main concern is in case of an accident are the door going to hold in place or are they going to fly of since the vibration "opening and closing" the doors? ts
My 2003 vw jetta tdi gls sedan was parked on a summer day (approx. 100 degrees f).upon returning to the vehicle, i noticed a waxy, greasy, yellow substance leaking from below the doors on both sides of the vehicle.upon further examination, i discovered that the substance was leaking from between the inside surface of the door and the rubber weather stripping.contacted my vw service dealer (dana motors, billings, mt), and they informed me that this was a common problem with vws during hot months, that the substance was an undercoating protectant that was sprayed on at the factory.they also told me that it was not necessary to have this protectant replaced.the stuff has continued leaking out on very hot days, usually only 95+ degrees.it is hard to remove but doesn't seem to have done any damage to the paint.i want to know if it's true that this stuff doesn't need to be replaced.what if it's a necessary lubrication and by leaking out will harm a part of the door assembly?

While driving a 2003 volkswagen jetta with approx 66,000 miles the motor mount bolts broke off and the engine fell to the ground. Damages were to the suspension of the car and no one suffered injuries.the speed at the time of the incident was approximately 40 miles.no signs that the motor mounts or assembly bolts were bad or loose.the car is at the dealer because they said that the motor mounts were covered under the warranty but the bolts are not.they want us to pay $2,200.00 for the repairs and the warranty cover other parts.i told them that the bolts are part of the motor mounts and they fail to perform as expected.in addition the car is been maintained by the same volkswagen dealer since we purchased the car 2 years ago.please advise since this could have been a serious accident if i was driving on a highway as i usually do.i think the manufacturer should fix my car and inspect all volkswagen's for any defective motor mount bolts.thank-you

While pulling to a stop at the end of my street i heard a loud bang. After getting out and inspecting the vehicle i noticed the right front spring had broken. I have not hit anything that would cause the spring to break. I am puzzled as to why this happened on a car with only 78,000 miles. The repair shop says this is the 6th jetta or golf they have seen with this problem in the last few months. The car is a 2003 vw jetta tdi. I am now out $450 to replace the springs?

Brake light switch failed and my car is stuck in park because it's impossible to shift when the brake light switch is faulty. This part has been recalled (n4), but i am forced to pay for a tow truck to get me to a dealer 20 miles away because the car is inoperable right now.warranty is over but if it's a recall and the part in question is causing me to be stuck, why should i be the one paying for the tow?

The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. The contact stated that the front passenger side window fell into the door. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
There is significant distortion through the windshield.
Dt:according to the owner's manual the rear defroster switch is supposed to turn off automatically ten minutes after being activated.when the consumer turned on the rear defroster it did not shut itself off.as a result, the wires in the rear window did not work properly.this causes the consumer not to be able to see through some parts of the rear window.the dealership said that it was suppose to be manual.the window was replaced in february2005.the replacement window had not experienced any damage because the defroster switch had been turned off manually.(11/17/05)*sc
While trying to close the front passenger window, it stopped half way up and got stuck.after pushing the electric button to lower the window, it fell out of the track mechanism and into the door.
2003 vw jetta.brake light switch is broken causing the vehicle to be undriveable.also, the driver side windows keeps falling into the door.
While traveling down the highway the drivers side window fell into the door. The call is undrivable in this condition as it is around 20 degrees outside and the car cannot be locked securely due to absence of window.the dealer wants to charge us $456 for a window regulator and motor.

The automatic windowswere defective.the driver sidewindow was repaired twice for falling out, and once for going inside the door.the passenger's side window fell out twice........
The contact owns a 2003 volkswagen jetta. While driving 15 mph, the contact stated that the driver side window fell when she attempted to roll it down.the dealer stated that the regulator that holds the window in place cracked.the failure mileage was 7,455 and the current mileage was 7,500.
The clamps on the front driver's side window of my 2003 vw jetta detached leaving the window stuck closed.
While driving 10 mph front right and rear right window'sfell down without warning.driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over. The cause has not been determined at this time.
I have a 2003 jetta wagon tdi, 3.5 years old with 63k miles.i was driving in a narrow residential street with my windows down.i began to raise the windows and i heard a loud pop and a strange noise from the passenger side.it turns out the window mechanism had broken and the window was hanging there 1/3 close in a strange angle.i tried to lower it or raise it, but instead it just went all the way down. The sound startled me and i momentarily swerved and hit the curve.there was no damage to the car or other property.i had to drive home with wet cold air blowing in, which was very distracting.i believe this is a dangerous condition both because the original sound is startling, and because the condition becomes a distraction from driving.
I bought an 2003 vw jetta wolfsberg on jan. 17th, 2007. I was driving on an interstate and hit a bump and the right passenger window fell into the door panel. I went to the dealer and they said they could fix but its out of warranty and i will be responsible for all charges. I called vw and they said there are no known defects or any pending at this time.
Passenger and drivers windows spontaneously drop from frame and fall into door. This incident caused my arm to be bruised when accessing my mailbox.the failure has occurredon two doorsboth door required new pulleys for the window system. According to the mechanic this is a very common problem with volkswagen.
On feb. 14, 2006, i was driving 65 mph on freeway, experienced loud explosion-type noise - after coming to reality and out of shock realized sunroof was blown out - and i was covered in glass - first reaction was to believe that i had been shot with gun or that something was thrown from overpass - after police investigation, photographs by dealership and dozens of eyewitnesses viewing the remaining out glass of the sunroof (that was still attached but shattered) was pointed in an upward position towards sky - not into vehicle as if it imploded from the interior to exterior - everyone determined that it had not been struck by anything but rather just blew out.this was very frightening and dangerous - i could have been injured by the glass or been involved in an accident from the incident.everyone sent photos and spoke to volkswagen of america - they do not care - and refuse to cover under warranty or even question me about incident even though - i have informed that i am fearful to even drive vehicle now - everyone that saw the car in person - is in awe and thinks this is weird - however, vw america the only party who did not see the vehicle in person - is still sticking by their answer that it was caused by something striking the car - there are other people with other types of cars on the internet with this same experience and they also know that they were not struck - i had a police report and photos with proof that the glass blew from the interior out - vw is showing negligence towards me and other drivers.this is the 10th odd incident that i have had with vw - and the second safety hazard - i am trying to get out of the lease because i am too scared to drive the car now.they need to be held responsible - and i am appalled that they were not even concerned with my safety or if i had injuries.
The sunroof drain in my car is apparently made of 2 tubes that connect and were not secured together so they become detached and pour water into the car.this happened to me this year, i looked it up and found there was a recall on this that i never received.i called roger jobs(my local vw dealership) in bellingham, wa and they told me the recall expired and i would have to pay to fix this factory defect!i am a college student who cannot afford to fix this problem and really makes me mad especially since i received no notice of this recall.now i have water flowing into my car every time it rains, it is starting to cause rusting under my seats and mold.not happy!
While driving under rainy conditions, consumer states the vehicle wipers may stop for 15 seconds then they'll start back up again. Also they stop any where on the window, and its distracting to driver.please provide any further information. Ts
Consumer states that when jacking up vehicle the alloy rims would get stuck to the rotor, causing the consumer to kick the rim.
Tire rims on 2003 jetta wolfsburg edition model corrode and cause potentially dangerous leaks. My daughters have called crying several times with nearly flat tires. Had they not noticed, we could have had disastrous results. I have complained to volkswagendealers and vw usa about the unsightly corrosion. The have dismissed it as something that happens in northern weather were this salt on the road.it's now a dangerous situation for anyone who drives that car.
Tire rims bend so easily i have replaced 3 already.
