Air bag indicator light on dasboard became illuminated.took car to dealer who informed me that vw's need supplemental wiring harness installed in steering column because of a problem with the connection as shippped from the factory.dealer says "most" vw new jettas have this problem and charged $90 to install new connector. If this is true shouldn't vw have to recall because it is a safety system?nlm
Car accident air bags did not deploy, i hit my head on the steering wheel.

Transmission difficult to shift/acceleration (making turns, entering highways, etc.)
While driving the air bag indicator light illuminated on the the dashboard, vehicle was taken to volkswagen where consumer was informed that vehicles of this make and model needed a supplemental wiring harness installed in the steering column because of a problem with the connector as shipped from the factory, consumer is unaware of any recalls for this condition.

I was involved in a collision at about 40mph and the airbags did not deploy. The car received major front end damage and hit all 3 airbag sensors. The car in front of me had its airbags deploy and it was a toyota.
The contact owns a 1999 volkswagen jetta. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, smoke began to fill the cabin of the vehicle. The contact stopped the vehicle and saw that smoke was bellowing from beneath the steering column. The smoke disappeared after some time. The contact then attempted to restart the vehicle and the air bag deployed independently. The manufacturer was notified and advised the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for inspection and the contact was awaiting the results. The failure and current mileage was 115,144.
The air bag indicator light in the dashboard came on.the dealership told me it would be about $700.00 to repair . I was informed that while the light was on the air bags would not function.the vehicle has not been crashed and it would appear this is a safety issue that vw should address and repair.r.

Took my car to dealership to have my airbag light checked, they said that they would clear it. It was cleared, then popped up again and has since then stayed on.

I have experienced 4 part failures, each on my airbag system on my volkswagen jetta.the first part failure occured on may 28, 1999 and subsequent part failures occured as follows:7-30-1999, 2-23-2000 and 7-11-2000.with the most recent occurance, my car was delivered to the dealership on july 11, 2000 and the maintenance was not completed until august 4, 2000 due to the unavailibility of the part from the manufacturer.due to the severity of this defect, and given the fact that my dealership has exhausted their efforts in trying to identify the problem, i no longer feel safe driving this vehicle.with the information provided, i feel that my vehicle meets the qualifications of the "lemon law". At this time i am requesting that i receive a replacment vehicle.thank you for your consideration in this matter.please do not hesitate to contact me if more information is needed.

My friend had an automoble accident last week and his car's airbags did not deploy he did hit the guardrails head-on and the air bags never deployed he wanted me to check to see if there has been a recall about this his car was a vw jetta '99 i'm sure the car was totaled in this wreck .

Vehicle was involved in a head-on collisi0n, impact at approximately 30 mph.abs brakesfailed to operate, causing vehicle to slow down but not stop. Seat belt on driver's sidefailed to lock in place, causing consumerto sustain a head injury from hitting windshield.also, air bags did not deploy. Dealer / manufacturer notified.
The car was involved in a high-speed, front end collision and the airbags did not deploy. The car was traveling at 70 mph when it was clipped from the side and spun out of control. It crashed headlong into a van going approximately 40-50 mph. The impact sent the car backward approximately 30 feet before it spun 180 degrees and came to a halt. The front end of the car is severely damage--$7,000--and the engine may have been displaced as much as 2 inches. I called volkswagen customer relations to report the problem and to ask for assistance to guarantee that the airbags would perform properly once the car was repaired and back on the road again on 7/27/00. On 8/1/00 i received a message from "david." i phone back on 8/2/00. After explaining the details of the accident to david, he told me in advance that his "product liason team" would probably conclude that the crash did not meet the criteria required to deploy the airbags and there was nothing they could do for us. I expressed my dissatisfaction with this, especially since no one from volkswagen had examined or planned to examine the vehicle. He told me that we could take it to the dealer ourselves (it is not driveable) and they could analyze the computer data onboard re. The crash conditions. This was all they could offer us. All we were seeking was an explanation as to why the airbags did not deploy under such severe crash conditions, and a guarantee that whatever needed to be done to assure they would function properly in the future would be taken care of by volkswagen or its dealer. Bottomline, in a high-speed, front end collision, the airbags did not deploy.
I purchased my '99 jetta new.after apprx 7 days the airbag warning illuminated for no reason. I took the car back to the dealer for service. They had a difficult time diagnosing the problem.they did get the light to go off, but after a week it illuminated again. I took the car back a second time, and this time the kept it for 2 weeks. They decided it was a sesor, then changed their minds and said it was the wiring harness. After 2 weeks they told me it was fixed.several mechanics warned me against driving it when the airbag light is on, citing a possible defect.the light stayed off untill about the 20,000 mile mark. It went on and i took it in, they fixed it without much explaination. Now at 54,000 it is on again.i am worried about a possible defect which might prevent my airbag from deploying in case of an emergency. Before now, it was under warranty. The only cost was time and effort. Now i must pay to have it diagnosed, a rental car and to actually have it repaired, once again. I have talked to others that have been through the same thing with little help from volkswagen or the dealer. I was hoping to get the word out that there may be a possible defect with the electrical sensor, wire harness or the airbag itself. Thank you.
Consumer was traveling inintersection and another vehicle ran a red light, andrammed intoconsumer'svehicle from side .car was completley turned around into the street, and had to be towed away. Upon impact, air bags failed to deploy.

Three out of four door lock alarm sensors went bad within the last year and a half at about the same time whereas while the door was open, the car alarm would sound.the system functions so that if keyless entry is used and computer does not sense doors are open, the vehicle will relock after an allotted time.the vehicle should (and used to) disable the alarm as soon as any of the doors opened.the alarm goes off after the allotted time to lock the car again, even with door open (except for driver's side).this proves incredibly inconvenient while putting sleeping baby back into car seat.have had two back doors repaired at about $400 per door.front passenger door not repaired as vw service computer refuses to see issue with sensor.regardless, alarm sounds while door is open.also, lock sensor in truck failed with similar results.replaced at $75.when inquired whether alarm could be disabled, was told it is tied into electrical system and would lose functionality of horn and other systems.
Vehicle experienced several recalls/ and several problems: dome light, vanity mirrors, emissions problems, etc... *mrthe consumer experienced the following problems with:the interior dome lights, interior trim had come loose on the passenger side, the passenger vanity mirror light did not shut off, the cup holder was jammed and had broken, the driver window sounded as if air was coming in the vehicle, the glove compartment hinges had broken, the air bag light would come on when the radio was turned off, the sensors never seemed to work, the oil dipstick had given abnormal readings(showing low when oil was just changed), the lean oxygen sensor was replaced, the check engine light was intermittent but stayed on, and the catalytic converter was replaced due to noise which ended after the repair(the check engine light had come back on).*scc
My check-engine light has come on three times since late november.the first time it was a cracked vacuum hose.the second time (within two weeks of fixing the first problem) it was the mass air meter.the third time, it came on 5 hours after i was rear-ended january 6th but the dealer said it was not related to the accident.they said it was the oxygen sensor.the serviceman i spoke with at the dealership said he has noticed that this model seems sensitive, causing the check-engine light to come on so frequently.i'm frustrated that none of this is under warranty and with the frequency of these occurrences.

The vw vehicle is programmed to cripple the engine performance and speed in case of an epc fault. Any fault causing a rich or lean condition will cause this "limp mode". This is a safety issue especially people on the highway going 65-75mph and a 80,000 pound tractor trailer behind them as one person experienced.there are too many non-vital component failures to list that can cause this fault. I refer to non-vital meaning the component failure will not harm the driver of the car. The fault light indication isn't enough? now they have the right to force you into a repair shop and buy more vw parts. I feel that this is a money making scam endangering our lives. We do not put a halt on this now- soon any fault will cripple our cars. It's not just vw (hyundai did a similar "limp mode").
Hazards will cease to flash after being on for approximately a minute.must turn off then on again, but still stops working.i have not repaired the problem, yet.
The coil pack on the 1999 jetta's on more than a number of vehicles have needed to be replaced.a recall on this part has been issued for the 2000 and 2001 vehicles.more than a dozen of individuals i have personally spoken to have had the same problem with the 1999 jetta and may be in pursuit of obtaining legal actions to resolve matters.the part and labor can easily cost over $600 to replace.please advise on whether a recall for the 1999 coil pack of jetta vehicles will be acknowledged?
Car has several electrical problems.have already spent about $1000 on various ignition related repairs at the dealership. Part of the dashboard lights do not work, trunk can not be opened from the inside.

Vehicle's engine power was reduced while driving and the epc light illuminated.*mrwhile driving the epc light illuminated and the vehicle's speed was reduced from 60 mph to 20 mph.the manufacturer was contacted and informed the consumer that there weren't enough complaints to launch an inquiry.*nlm

Brake light switch replaced because cel illuminated indicating a failure of same.after some testing, it became apparent that the brake lights were not illuminating approximately 9 out of 10 times that the brakes were applied.at approximately the same time, the right turn signal began arcing.replaced the right front signal bulb due to carbon buildup on the bulb.also replaced the turn signal relay.right outer cv boot was found to be leaking grease on 5/22/2002 and again on 4/29/2003; in both cases it was replaced.battery died on 3/10/2003.on 7/9/2002, the center rear seat belt became stuck in its retractor and would not release.seat belt assembly was replaced.on 10/1/2001, the driver's front window regulator was replaced after the window fell into the door without warning.
Multiple problems:main complaint 1. Failure of window regulator, driver and passenger side - several times on each side 2. The car is a 1999 and i have replaced the battery twice once in 2000 (blew up) and once recently (8/2003) and now starter motor and alternator are failing.sometimes the gas gauge works and sometimes it doesn't, sometimes the key lock/alarm works sometimes it doesn't and horn works intermittently- all problems since 2000.the car is known to lock/unlock itself.the fender liner and front grills fell off in 2000.the sunroof cover and the sunroof have both failed once.the gas tank cover failed twice.the front clutch dropped off the engine while driving at 24500 miles and the dealership did not work with me on expenses ($600 to fix).the vw symbol on all 4 tires have fallen off (only in place with adhesive).
When trying to start vehicle battery blew up under hood. Could not get hood up. Had vehicle towed to dealer. Please add vin.
Oil light came on 2000 miles after oilchange/burning or leaking excessive oil,and oil level low. Passenger's window motor stopped working, resulting in window falling down,. Also, engine revved high/ light switch on interior light fell off/ front right michelin tire blewout, andhad to replace battery. Dealer kept repairing problems. Consumer contacted vw co, and was told they would get back to her, but never did. Consumer felt vehiclewas a lemon. Please add additional information.
Battery explosion.
Ignition coil pack on vw jetta, '99 new body. Hints of failure began long before cross country road trip but did not warrant a service. (ie, jerks when starting the vehicle during heavy rain) after road trip, problem grew in severity, brought in for service, and realized coil pack needed replacement. *la
While driving, the engine light illuminated. The dealer stated the ignition coils needed to be replaced.
Check engine light on, car runs rough when wet.has always.bring it in for diagnostic and they say it is the ignition coil pack.it was replaced and the day after service is completed on the way to work check engine light comes on again. Bring it back in and after another diagnostic hook up and another $72 later now they say there are 2 more faults.the ignition wires need replacing and the long term fuel trim is running lean. I do some research on line and find out vw has had ignition coil problems and had recalls on2001 and 2002 model years after a class action suit was filed.i contacted vw before i knew about the class action suit and the problems vw has had with the ignition coil packs and was told that they couldn't assist me.go figure.a company who has had these very same problems in the past with other models and years isn't taking responsibility for defective parts.i am very unhappy with vw service, both at the dealer and there headquarters for not acknowledging the problem and for not taking responsibility.there is an attorney who is doing a class action investigation into the ignition coil pak problem.it is gg&d, girard, gibbs, and de bartolomeo.they are based in san francisco and have a web site.you can email them if you've had any problems with your ignition coil pack needing replacing.i think it is horrible that vw won't admit of any liability in this matter especially since they've had a class action suit already for other years.it is just too coincidental that others are still experiencing ignition coil problems.so far, i have spent over $1600 to fix these problems.i guess i won't be buying anymore volkswagens. *la
Engine sputters when it has been sitting in damp (rain, etc.) conditions.sparks appear at spark plug connections (ignition coil). Vehicle was examined by vw dealer when the problem had initially occurred.they indicated a faulty ignition coil, but the problem was not present that afternoon.problem recurred when it was subsequently damp, etc.i had the car checked by another mechanic who could not tell anything.i brought the car for a tune-up back to the dealer who looked at it intitially. I specifically asked for the condition of the ignition coil, and they told me it was fine.i believe there was a recall on this part for earlier vws.
My 1999 jetta iv (gls vr6) needed a new coil pack at 75,000 miles (rough operation in wet weather; engine light finally turned-on).i have read that the replacement of the coil pack on the 1999 jetta's is extremely common.a recall on this part has been issued for the 2000 and 2001 vehicles, but not for the 1999. I also read that some individuals may be in pursuit of obtaining legal actions to resolve matters. The part and labor is expensive. Please advise on whether a recall for the 1999 coil pack of jetta vehicles will be acknowledged?*a

I have a 1999 volkswagen jetta. On march 24, 2003 monday morning i was driving with in the city in san ramon, ca and suddenly with a noise my car stopped. My engine won't start at all after that and in the end i had to call aaa to tow my car. Aaa towed my car to the nearest auto center, where after thecomplete inspection "bob auto tech" told me that the crank shaft of my car was broken. I was shocked and surprised to hear that, and i could not believe that. My car is only 4 years old, and has always been taken care of by me by regular servicing and oil change and always at vw authorized dealerships/workshops. I ended up paying up bills worth $3194.82 from my pocket as it was not covered by the insurance also.i would kindly request you to look into the matter and help me with my distress and financial pain. *nlm

Began oil consumption study may 2006 but has been an ongoing issue prior and present. This is a copy of some information i sent to vwoa a. I went through the attorney general too. Vwa continues to deny this is a problem, it is in specifications but do not tell me what is abnormal oil usage.i had a recall so went to the dealer for the service with my editorial sign on the jetta, that i had sent to mr. Engine and steering problems
Check engine light came onand stayed on whiledriving.dealership has serviced the vehicle twice in which they have cleaned the throttle . This provided a temporary solution, butthe light came back on withinan hour. A mechanic indicated thatthis wasan intermittent problem that could not be repaired.
Car burns at least a quart of oil between every oil change - service dept claims this is normal - oil filler cap is full of yellow "foam" - oil pressure light recently came - check oil level and found it needed 2 1/2 quarts of oil - service department claims this is normal
This is my scenario:each 3,000-4,000 mile oil change, often there was no register on the dip stick of my jetta. Jetta manual states oil change recommended every 10,000 miles item 2 there are no drips under the vehicle or smoking ever. There is no oil splashed upon the underside of the hood to indicate gasket problemmy sister who owns the same car in california had made me aware of the same situation with her jetta and told me her dealer approached her and she confirmed their questions of loosing oil. They initiated and completed satisfying her as a customer by resolving the situation. I have included the invoice of her repair to her jetta. Item 3realizing my vehicle was in the same mileage range, and concerned that further and worse damage could be done, i perused the issue with my local dealer "day apollo" in moon township, pa. Relevant contact information is on invoices from them. Apollo did an oil change and followed up with "oil consumption watch" for the next 3000 miles that took from may 12, 2006- august 28, 2006 to complete though irregular intervals from 82,856 miles to 84,920 miles = 2,064 miles it was downquart of oil. At 85,860 miles- 3002 miles from the start, and only another 904 miles from the previous check, the oil was low a full quart of oil.= 1 qt in 1610 mi.oitem set 4 -are copies of the study.oitem 5letter from vw customer service indicates .85 qt. Oil loss in 1000 miles = 2.55 qt. Oil loss in 3000 miles. ??consulting several professional mechanics i was vehemently told that is an unacceptable oil loss in that amount of miles.apollo vw dealer, however, in their rhetoric, and taking advantage of a lady alone, stated that it is within their standards. The standards are low enough to cover their backs that a bicycle could be with in the "specifications".

Map failure.but also "coolant migration problem."wherein, due to faulty coolant reservoir sensor seal, coolant migrated out of coolant reservoir and into wiring harness causing speedo and cruise control failures.was repaired at no cost, as was maf.however numerous tdi and gasser owners are constantly reporting maf failures.
Leak in cooling system causing migration to water pump, heater core, and engine wiring harness.having to replace all 3.car stalls at random times in busy traffic, posing potential accident problem.caused toxic fumes to come through heat vents in car.
Coolant system external leak was fixed, hoses replaced and connector that attaches to engine was replaced also. Leak comes back , replaced another hose., then the worse starts, the heater core started leaking and the car started to smell like antifreeze. Got heater core replaced, but the inside of the car smells horrible,.every time i drive my 1999 jetta, i get this metallic taste in my mouth and throat. The stuff is definitely toxic, and the af container reads poisonous. Becomes a torture to drive my jetta i hate the metallic taste in my mouth. The design off some of the heating system includes plastic components that may not take the heat well specially at the point of contact with the engine. Did some online research and found similar cases with internal antifreeze leaks on vw jettas. This fumes can really ruin your driving experience not to mention the possible detriment on your health due to breathing in a contaminated atmosphere thanks for looking into this complaint.
The thermostat housing needed to be replaced due to coolant leakage. This part had to be replaced to prevent coolant loss. I had to purchase the part and pay to have it replaced.
While driving 60mph heard a clicking noise. Then ater pump seized & causedvehicle to stall out. Pulled over.had vehicle towed to dealer. Informed by mechanic it was the water pump which sheared off the timing belt & damaged the valve head. Problem was repaired except for the clicking noise that was still there.
Coolant leaking from coolant reservoir bottle wiring connector contaminates the wiring harness.

1999 jetta's oil pan threads were stripped and drain plug needed to be replaced.
Vehicle which is a 4 cylinder engine burned more oil than expected , a quart every 1000 mile. The oil level was down at 1000-1500 miles after oil change.about this time check the engine light came on .the dealer states that this problem is common with2.0l.4 cylinder engine, when the check engine came on againe, the dealer replaced the oxyen sensor.since then no light came on.
Oil pan cracked.
While driving at 70 mph and without prior warnng, engine failed, andconsumer lost power.consumer was in the third lane, and the vehicle shut down. Also, engine valves dropped straight through the engine on the other side while in motion, andvehicle vibrated.
Burning oil, changed to using 20w 50 - still burning, have investigated at several dealers, they are all aware of the problem, say it happens in 10% of vehicles, and that volkswagen is not recalling until they know exactly the cause. My problem was initiated with a loss of a engine casting seal, and has been burning ever since. Most dealers are giving the run around, and vw is claiming that the vehicle is in spec. When talking to independent mechanics and telling them that the vehicle is burning 1 qt of 20w50 every 750-1000 miles, each tells me that the engine is ruined, probably happened when the seal blew. Vw is hiding this from the consumers, apparently is well aware of the problem and is hiding behind a equipment spec. I have been told that it is very possible that there is engine damage to the vehicle and vw is stalling.
4 cylinder engineburned 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles, but this vehicle has been burning more oil.dealer could not determine the cause.please provide further information.
Engine head gasket blew out, spark plugs melted. Head gasket and spark plugs had to be replaced by the dealership. Also, front axle was bent.when consumerdrove at approximately 50 mph vehiclewould shake .
Hit dip in road at low speed, chafed oil pan which caused a one inch split in oil pan.
I understand there has been numberous report oil pan punctures with the vw jetta.the combination of thin gauge steel and the low positon of the pan lead to high potential from road damage.
The vehicle hit a pothole and it punctured the oil pan, allowing oil to leak from the vehicle. Dealer saidoil pan needed to be replaced.

Engine burns about a quart of oil every 1000 to 1500 miles.dealer is waiting on volkswagen for a fix.after reading other ntsb complaints and talking to other vw owners i find that this is a major problem that vw is hoping will blow away. Adding oil to a new car every 1000 to 1500 miles is not acceptable to me as a consumer.what is vw doing about this?
Vehicle burns oil (doing so for 9 mos now), dealer has been running "test" on car for 4 mos.said may have to replace engine.air bag light on first day owning, told to wait 2wks for an appt at which was told car unsafe to drive. Transmission difficult to shift/acceleration (making turns, entering highways, etc.)
The oil in engine is being consumed very quickly.when i take car to get an oil change every 3,000 - 5,000 miles, the oil is usually so low it does not appear on dip stick.the oil is simply blowing out of the engine.you can see the oil residue on the engine.

At about 26,000 miles, which was about two and a half months ago, i checked the oil and had to add three quarts. I took it to the dealer and they told me to look for black smoke and oil spots on the driveway. No black smoke or oil is visibly escaping from the engine. I checked the oil again on june 15, and had to add another quart and a half. I reported it to the dealer and made another appointment for them to check it out. Today, july 11, 2000, the dealer checked the oil (which was down a half quart), told me that they don't know what to look for and have to wait for the volkswagen district service manager to point them in the right direction. So "we" are now waiting for a call from the district manager. The oil and filter have been changed regularly, but the oil appears very gritty and also appears to be burnt onto cap of the filler-hole. The dealer seems reluctant, at best, to deal with the situation.

I was driving on interstate 91 on the evening ofjanuary 21st when the car began to slow down even though i was pressing on the gas pedal.i was able to get it off the exit and thinking that i may not have had enough diesel additive, i nursed it to a truck stop at the base of the exit and added enough additive for 75 gal.after 3 minutes the car died and needed to be towed.it was towed to a vw dealer and they contacted vw.the vw rep said that there was a service bulletin out and directed the dealer to drill out the check valve on the fuel sending unit.i picked the car up on wednesday the 19th and drove it wednesday and thursday.on friday, i had driven for about 1/2 hour on interstate 91 and the car did the same thing.i coasted to the breakdown lane and the car stalled.once again it could not be restarted.it was towed to gene langan vw in glastonbury.this is a very dangerous defect that could result in an accident if the driver cannot safely negotiate the vehicle off of the highway.when i spoke with vw roadside assistance on the evening of january 21st, they said that they were getting hundreds of calls about the 1999 diesels just dying after prolonged periods of driving.apparently this problem is more widespread than just my vehicle.i would appreciate your investigating this problem with the 1999 jetta diesels. Thank you.

2 days after we purchase the car a brake shoe braket came off and was rubbing the rear rotor. July, 3 windows went bad, 2 were the wiring and 1 was the motor. October the front wheel bearing needed replaced plus wheel alignment. September the exhuast broke off behind the catalytic converter i had it fixed myself. The exhuast had also broke off 6 months earlier in front of the muffler but i fixed it. One window that they fixed in july 2002 went bad again in june of 2003 and needed fixed. The rear brake on the same wheel that they fixed in january of 2001 has gone bad now. I'm done with this car. It's been in the shop more then i have ever had any car combined. Thanks
O2 sensor & mass air flow sensors were replaced as part of a compaign after they went bad. Less than 2 years later, o2 sensor has gone bad again. Vw refuses to replace saying it's out of warranty. Complained that sensors were replaced at the very start of the compaign long before letters were ever sent out and that i could have received the old sensor. Vw was unable to provide any proof that the replacement sensors were the updated sensors and they refused to cover the additional repair. New sensor lasted less than 2 years/40000miles.

Rear brakes were sqeualing for months.took into dealership 5 times and they could not duplicate noise.finally rear brakes went all together and had them replaced at another dealership.dealer said they should not have gone after just over 30,000 miles so volkswagen covered half of costs.one week later picked up car as i was driving home malfunction indication light came on.took into dealership again.all three oxygen sensors had blown.day after picking up from dealership passenger window fell into door and is currently back in being fixed.i know these are all common problems with 1999 jetta.vw was somewhat helpful on cost but will do nothing now because they "have already been too kind".this car is dangerous and i do not feel comfortable driving it anymore.now i have to cover the cost of an early lease termination for fear of injury or more $ for damage repairs.
Both the mass air flow sensor and the oxygen sensor have failed in my car after the initial warantee expired.symptoms of each failure was a hesitation when accelerating similiar to stalling the engine, being possibly hazardous when turning into traffic.talking to the dealership, they stated that it was a "common problem" for both items.if this is a common problem this leads me to believe that these two components are defect in design.i've talked to other volkswagen owners, service representatives and some independent repair shops and they have said that they have had/seen the same problems repeatedly. Repairs to this vehicle have become expensive at $750+ for each occurance.if you could provide any information i might be able to use i would be grateful.
Several oxygen sensors failed within weeks of one another.
3 oxygen sensors blew up at different times less thn 1 month apart. Vehicle was unable torun move or start. When vehicle was started, it had a burning smell as though it was going to blow up. It was $500.00for the 3oxygen sensors to be replaced.dealer statedoxygen sensorswere sensitive.`
March 16, 2000 malfunction indicator light on- needed a new oxygen sensor.had to wait until october of 2000 (7 months) to get sensor replaced after numerous calls to volkswagen customer service.then in february of 2001 (4 months later) the malfunction indicator light is back on.had diagnosed through a local mechanic it was oxygen sensor again and have same symptoms as before.also major consumption of fuel after the indicator light came on.several problems have occured in the car and volkswagen will not even consider covering to get fixed.i have an extended warranty which also will not help cost of fixing the numerous problems with this new vehicle.have tried to speak with several managers through volkswagen and no one seems to want to help.the problems occuring will cause safety issues if they are not fixed soon.i am a single female, age 24, am living on my own and am very concerned about my transportation and the fact that no one from volkswagen or the extended warranty (easy care) want to assist the problems.i would greatly appreciate your help with this matter.thank you for your time.
This is the fourth failure of the oxygen sensor since i purchased the car (new) in 1999.the dealer had worked with vw on the last failure to try to find a solution for the problem; however, less than six months later the sensor has failed again.clearly, there is a problem with the model since the dealer has advised that many others have experienced similar failure.the last time it failed, there was about a one month delay in having the sensor replaced because they were on back order.

I have a 1999 jetta. The oxygen sensor was replaced and based on the volkswagen customer team, my car (based on the vin #) does not fall in the ones that they recalled with the safety alerts issued by the epa and the volkswagen company. I believed that they most re-considered the way that they selected the affected vehicles. Since i know people who has been dealing with the same oxygen sensor problem, and their vehicle identification number does not fall in the ones that the company has identified for the recalled.

The mass air flow sensor went out after they replaced the oxygen sensor and they want$550.00 to replace the sensor which i believe is their problem this is an ongoing problem with the 1999 jetta, and i feel they should replace it at no cost a car that is not even 3 years old should not need a new mass air flow sensor. I am very unhappy with vw and i will never buy another or recommend them to anyone.

The blinker on my car is failing.it is in the unit on the steering column.after turning a corner it will not automatically shut off.when driving it will drop down and come on sometimes.it sometimes does not want to come on and i have to push it hard.the vehicle is a 1999.5 vw jetta.i have read on the forums also that this is a very common problem and a very expensive fix.
Driver noticed fluid leaking from underneath the vehicle. It was taken to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic determined that the diesel pump needed to be replaced, and replaced it three times. However, the problem recurred.
1999.5 volkswagen jetta gls vr6,always getting dtc codes of p1117, p0140, p1198, p1472, p1435, p0102, p0343, p1421..that always says about open or short circuit conditions and poor electrical connections, and short to grounds for electrical, which is all electrical problems, if you search online them codes you will see numerous people with the same problems, and as well as alot of us have to buy the parts that is listed and problems still aren't fixed, which tells us its an electrical issue, not issues with the parts, which causes our #43 fuse blow alot, and alot of hesitation and stalling, i cant even turn around a corner or to get off the highway without stalling, please fix these problems, its happening to way to many of us and it is also an safety issue.
Would like to know if there is any recalls on my jetta. I check engine light comes on. I took it to 4 repair shop and no one could find whats wrong with it. I've paid over 1200 on other repairs. What can i do .thanks christina
Intake manifold pluggs up with a build up of carbon and oil sludge to the point where car cannot safely reach freeway speeds to merge onto freeway. Vw has paid for the repair once at 40000 miles after i complained of the 1600.00 repair bill. Since then i have had to have it repaired 3 more times at my exspence. It is now needs to be done again as i cannot reach safe speeds to safly merge onto freeways and am scared of being hit from rear. The problems is from egr gases and ccv oil mist mixing at the beginning of the intake manifold which creates sludge that builds up and plugs up the air flow to the cyls.

This is not an isolated problem. The relay 109 has been brought to vw's attention several times. They have issued a tech tip on their website to dealers. My dealer replaced the wrong part and charged me for it. Now i have to wait for them to test it before they refund my money. This happened to me several times on the highway, in traffic. When you are stalled in the middle lane on a road and you see cars coming you hope they see you and don't run through the back of you. This is a serious problem and vw is ignoring it. In regards to the fuel injection, they are going through these too. The tdi engine is getting clogged (they don't kow why) and cause the fuel injector to fail. My dealership has had mine for a week. Part is on back order. Vw is not responsive.
Fuel is leaking from the fuel tank.the dealer has inspectedvehicle.
Engine transmission light failed after 3 months, both windows have fallen down into door, front bumper has been torn off, antena and other plastic objects around car have fallen off,abs system light is on again, cover for gas tank will not open (i had to pry it open), cup holders and mirror covershave broken, inside of car started to bubble after 6 months, because of the plastic.all the service department in san antonio could say was that i did not know how to manage car.i didn'tknow i had to take a class in opening the gas cover.oddly enough, most of these things started to break after my two year warranty expired.all they had to say was that "when it rains it pours". I would never recommend this car to anyone

The windshield cracked although there was no apparent cause- dealer replaced.fuel filler door would not operate- dealer charged $13 to open the door so that it could be fueled and provided an estinate of repair for $100+.transmission does not engauge properly. Especially from stop signs when the car is cold.the delay causes the engine to rev and the car to start with a jerk after several seconds.there is also a similar problem when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd.this problem is intermittent which adds to the frustration and danger that this problem is causing.the dealer has offered to check the problem for a fee of $69 although the car is well within the power train coverage that vw promised when they sold the car.
While driving at about any speedvehicle suddenly accelerated out of control withoutprior warning. Also, transmission shifted gear roughly.
Vehicle rolls forward when on the slightest grade when put in reverse, it takes 3-5 seconds to engage and even after it engages it will roll forward.i almost hit a mother and child walking infront of the car when in a parking space, the second time the vehicle plunged into a pole causing damage to the vehicle.
When vehicle is placed on an incline or when the surface is not leveled, and when placingvehicle in reverse, vehicle will roll about 2-3 feet. Consumer has contacted the dealer and manufacturer, problem repaired. .et.
I was driving up 24 north, driving approximately 70 miles per hour.while in the fast lane, my ability to accelerate just stopped.my engine continued to run, however, my car would not move.fortunately, i was not driving on this highway during rush hour so i was able to coast over to the break down lane.volkswagen diagnosed that the transmission failed in my car.my concern is that there were absolutely no warning signs or indications that this part was going to fail.had i been on this highway during a busier time of the day, my car could have caused a serious accident due to the faulty part.
Vehicle has excessive engine oil consumption and loss of coolingat the same rate, which could cause engine failure/fire and air pollution. Owner has contacted dealership two times about the problem.also, gear selection and engagement of the transmission are slow to respond to input.dealer says that these problems are normal. *ml
Whenshifting gear into reverse andstepped on brakes to stopvehicle , and thenput it in drive, vehicle roared up, and there was a delay in shifting from reverse intodrive. However once it is released, it can't be used b/c the next time i go to use the seat belt and pull it out it locks again. The seat can't be used. It has also made it impossible to lay down the back seats, or once i lay it flat the seat can't be returned to the up right position.
1999 volkswagen jetta, rear middle passenger seat belt has become tightened to the point that it won't release. It seems that each time the seat back was lowered to increase the cargo area of the trunk, the belt tightens more.

I bought the car in august 2003, i noticed a repair docket from previous owner for left lower ball joint and left tie rod assemble w front end alignment on 5/29/03 at 34383 miles. I had a lot of noise under the engine.vw capistrano checked it out and said it was driver side ball joint.i bought car from a ford dealer who did not want anything to do with it.finally, vw capistrano forced their hand and processed it through my then current warranty.at the time, i had 45k miles on the car.i thought it shocking that a car so young should have such a major problem (for the second time).when i picked car up, a couple of days later, i heard a loud crunching noise in the front left hand side of the motor or wheel.i thought nothing of it, drove it another 5000 miles, had to replace 4 tires, and asked the tire tech to check it out.he said it was the steering knuckle and it was in bad shape.i contacted vw who said, bad luck, it's only covered for 24k miles or 2years.i again am shocked, firstly because that's impossible one of these should go out so early, added to that, if the ball joint was replaced, then isn't the steering knuckle, moved in some way shape or form, so there should be some sort of recourse.this car is a lemon, however, ca law states it isn't.i was ripped off by theodore robbins in costa mesa and wouldn't recommend anyone buy from them, they were suspect from day one once i drove my car from their lot. Also, the back right seat belt is fixed to the seat and is unusable, i complained it was dangerous, ford said too bad, you bought it that way fix it.since then my horn has gone out because the car 'lost' it's under wheel cover and water got into the horn.this car reportedly had a 100 point inspection, which i believe to be not true. The radio has never worked a day, it's always 'fuzzy'.

Rear passenger's seat belt broke. After putting the seat in the reclining position a pin broke which controlled the releasing of the seat belt, said the dealer.
The rear middle shoulder belt of my 1999 jetta is constantly broken. Every time i fold the middle seat down in the back the seatbelt gets tighter and tighter and tighter. This happens until eventually the belt is too tight for me to even fold the seat down any longer and i have to take the car in to be worked on. Apparently it is some "button" that is breaking. This happens every time i try to fold the seat down and as a result i am not able to safely secure passengers in my middle seat. So far i have had this button replaced 3 times.

Thanks
Brake lamps were operating correctly on 11/22/2009 and on 11/23/2009 they ceased working. Checked with nhtsa to see if open recall was open none but wanted to make known the issue since there have been two recalls in the pass for the same issue.
The brake sensor caused the engine to think the brakes were applied and lose power.the brake system then failed while dirving and the brakes would just lock up.if the 2nd problem happened on the highway i fear i would have been rear ended.both problems could be relatd. The sensor problem would trigger a dash warning light for the glow plug relay.in general the car has had problems with the brakes for most of the summer.

My car has been in the shop nearly every month in the past year (except for 3 months when it was in the shop due to accident), the brake pedal would stick almost every time it was driven would contact dealer and they could not find anything wrong because it was not reporting to a computer.i finally figured out if i put my foot under the brake pedal and pull it back out it would release, it once would not go over 40 mph.i called a tow truck multiple times to have it taken down to dealer still no one could find anything wrong.then i was sitting in a drive thru and the care made a popping sound and the brake pedal went to the floor and i lost my brakes but i pressed them again and they were fine.i contacted vw and they did not know what it was.driving home i tapped the brakes to slow down a little and the brake stuck and threw me forward luckily no one was behind me.i called vw immediately and told them that i did not want my car back until it was fixed.the rep drove my car for a week and of course nothing happened til the mechanic drove it.i have had the master cylinder and the brake boosters replaced which has seemed to help the brake from sticking but now my rotars are ruined and vw does not want to replace them becasue they are maintenance parts when it was a warranty part that made them go bad.recently driving to san diego my cruise control would not keep my car at a set speed, would not pull hills (had a fully loaded semi pass me) would drop to 40 mph on grades, had to keep the car pegged to go posted speed limit on straight stretches.windows have fallen twice on each side, middle restraint in back seat locks up and has to be replaced, cup holder broke, brake relay went out several times (no brake lights almost rear ended).is there anything i can do on this will it fall under the lemon laws.i want to replace it due to high cost and time spent going back and forth to the dealer but i more than it is worth.what can be done about this?

While driving the posted speed limit, i attempted to slow down in preparation for a right hand turn. I turned on my signal, and slowly began to hit my brakes. As i hit my brakes, it began to to engage and then i felt a "pop" in the brake pedal. I hit the brake a little harder and nothing happened. I then began pumping the brakes in an attempt to stop the car. My attempt to stop the car failed and i hit a parked car at 30mph. Moderate damage done to passenger front and quarterpanel of car. Door wedged into car braking some glass on passenger side. Upon impact, no airbags deployed whatsoever. I hit the windshield with my head and spidered the glass upon impact. Impact jolted the car in such a way, it snaped my inside mirror off the front windshield.
While trying to reduce speed by depressingbrake pedal, vehicle continued to travel causing consumer to lose control, and resulting ina collision. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further infortmation.
While traveling in snow and when depressing brakes vehicle continued to travel, brakes froze. Please provide further information.
Car accelerated from 5 mph until hit the car in front.brake didn't work.this happened once before. Dealer insulted driver instead of a followup.
Driver side seat belt release buttondoes not release, causing the driver to be trapped in the seat, consumer also having problems with the brakes. When making a normal or graudal stop, the brakes travel to the floorboard, causing extended stopping distance. Consumer has contacted the dealer. Seat belts have been taken care off.
The entire braking system failed and was replaced, there was no warming of any brake problem (squeaking, squealing), and by design vw has thinner vented rotors that make them run cooler but wear out faster.*nlm
Left front brakes grabbed. Other three failed to work. Took vehicle to dealer at least 7 times. Each time brakes were replaced/repaired.also, air bags failed to deploy after hitting a deer on left front side of vehicle.front grill was crushed. Insurance company indicated vehiclewas repairable.
Technician noted during service that the front rotors and rear rotors were worn below minimum specifications, rear pads down to 1mm, dealer replaced front rotors and pads and rear rotors and pads.
While on i-95between two exits the right rear passenger's side tire exploded and punctured a whole in the gas tank.dealer told consumer that consumer was responsiblethat must have run over something.
Engine consumes about 1+ quart of oil every 1,500 miles.front rotors need to be replaced at 30,000 miles, while brake pads are less than 50% used.refrigerant in air conditioner gone at around 30,000 miles with normal use in mild climate.
Consumer has had an ongoing problem with the brakes since the initial leasing of this vehicle.the vehicle failed eight times with the service station doing actual repairs four of those times.teh problem lies with the caliper suspension that controls the brakes.*jg

Car dies while driving at any speeds no power-brakes or steering.
Vacuum line to turbo failed, causing near total lack of acceleration -- almost causing an accident
This car was purchased new in july 2000. It is the newly redesigned jetta. Since it's purchase the car has been in the shop 9 times for water/air leaks, twice for failed drivers side front suspension steering failure, namely the shock, bearing, spacer, retainer (struts). In addition several pieces of the inside molding have detached. One of the largest safety issues for me, other than the strut, is the poorly designed floor mats which pop loose, slip forward , and catch the gas petal causing accerlaration. The air conditioner has molded over twice. I have informed both the seller and the manufacturing of my complaints and have demanded a refund or a lemonlaw take back. I am not sure what to do but feel vw hasn't been honest about all the problems the "new" vw has had. I just wanted to file this complaint in case other owners out there are experienceing the same problems i am and have not received any help from vw also.
Engine and steering problems
Alarm led is not flashing on driver's door. Yh
Rear center seatbelts jam, andwill not comeloose at all.dealership is aware ofproblem.

Engine shut off completely while driving about 45 mph with no warning. Lost power assisted steering.
My son's 1999 vw jetta gls vr6 -- and apparently hundreds of other jettas through model year 2006 identified on www.carsurvey.org-- have been severely water damaged after rain storms.in my case, it first happened on 13 october 2005, because of a design flaw in the cowl-vent/fresh-air inlet setup that allowed water in, flooding the car from under the right front passenger side; all carpeting and padding were covered in red and black mold requiring total removal, cleansing, and replacement (note: not any other vehicle in my cul de sac, including my 1998 vw passat, absorbed 1-drop).vw of america paid for the restoration, which i graciously thanked them for doing.one year later, again after a heavy rainstorm, when i went to drive the car on 27 nov 06, this time the driver's side and left rear passenger side carpeting were filled with water (note: again, not a single car in my 80-home subdivision let 1-drop of water inside, including my new 2006 passat, mercedes, fords, hondas, toyotas, buicks, miatas, chryslers, broncos, highlanders, volvos, and 2-cadillacs).i took the car immediately to the dealer for repair, just as a number of other vw owners had also done, and notified corporate vw of america that i was again asking for relief from the $800 carpet replacement.this time, so far, they have refused any reimbursement -- in spite of some 178 identical complaints of this same design flaw being posted in ever increasing numbers on, for example, the carsurvey.org website.i, my usaa insurance company, and hundreds of other vw jetta owners ask that a recall be imposed to resolve this design flaw; unresolved, it creates a health hazard, mechanical rust damage, and electrical malfunctions (the radio sound stopped while i was en route to the dealership!).
Vw jetta's (1999 and later): drain system originating at sunroof has a design defect that results in water backing up into the interior of the car.in severe storms, the car will become inundated with water.
The contact owns a 1999 volkswagen jetta. The contact stated that whenever it rained, excessive amounts of water leaked into the vehicle. The contact did not specify where the leak was located inside of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but it was not repaired. The contact called the manufacturer and was told that they could not discuss the failure with him due to a pending lawsuit. The failure mileage was approximately 113,000 and the current mileage was unavailable.
When it rained the floor of the vehicle became wet. The owner took the vehicle to the dealer.they fixed it and told the owner there was no guarantee that the repair wouldresolve the problem. The vehicle was returned to the dealer because the floorboard continued to get wet when it rained.the dealer has not provided a permanent solution.
This is a follow-on of my nhtsa complaint #10175337, because today, i experienced a third water ingestion into my son's 1999 vw jetta, and vw of america said, basically, "sorry, we cannot cover this water damage any more than we could cover the second water damage you had on 27 nov 06 -- unlike the water damage we covered for you on the 13 oct 05 damage!"with hundreds of blogs complaining of water leakage into the jetta's -- including thru 2006 models and ackowledgement by the dealer that this is a common occurrence! -- nobody with any smarts should consider buying one of these cars that the manufacturer declines to admit there is a design flaw or from a dealer who refuses to sign a pledge that if any future leak occurs it will be covered at their expense! as an aside, not a single homeowner in my 80-home subdivision had 1-drop of water entry during rains that entered my son's car!i returned the car to the dealership today because of water ingestion for a third time at the same point of entry it did on the second time for an out-of-pocket expense of over $1000.00!i'm a die-hard vw owner, having owned one since high school in 1961, but my wife has just decried i or our son will never own another!a recall must be issued by vw at the behest of nhtsa, period!
While driving in a parking lot the right front fender liner fell off causing the consumer to run over it, during repair of the fender liner it was noted that both front grills were missing.nlm
The center console is broken. Yh
Front bumper too low, gets caught and detaches from body of car.
While on vacation andpulling into a parking lot the front right hand side of the bumper came off of the one screw that was holding it into place and the brackets came out making it unsecure.the bumper lay on the ground as i proceeded into the parking lot, scratching on the asphaltas i had to pull in to avoid a potential accident.went to a local auto body shop where the man who temporarily fixed the bumper told me that vw's have unsecure front and rear bumpers, and that this happens all the time.
Bumper pulled loose (almost completely off) from mounting by cement parking space stopper while backing out of parking space.
Front bumper is too low andstandard. Right side/ left sidecontrete grill will take front bumper off completely.
Front bumper is way too low and scraps and gets caught on curbs.this can result in the whole front bumper coming off. The first time this happened the local dealership replaced it for free. Now they just say watch how you park. The trouble is, you cant's tell when you drive over a curb, only when backing out, does the bumper catch and pull off.this is a defect the manufacturer should fix, especially since i know my car was manufactured in mexico.
Paint on rear bumper of 1999 vw jetta's chip & peel off on most vehicles.reduces the resale value & appearance of the vehicle.*la
Regardless where i park, home, work, grocery stores, the concrete parking stops rip off the bumper and the assembly that holds the wheel wells together. The front grill pieces also pop out.who is not meeting the standards here the people installing parking bumpers or the manufacturer of the car?
When parking against a concrete parking stop, if you pull the front tires all the way to the stop when you back out you just about pull the entire bumper off. This happened only a couple months after we bought the car. We pulled into the parking spot not thinking anything of it. We owned similar sized cars before. The grillwork pops out and snaps back in. We lost two of the three pieces of grillwork from not realizing that they do come out when you simply park your car. The first i mentioned the incident to the service tech he said i guess they don't have those parking stops in germany. The second time i mentioned it the service tech said you have to remember this is a compact car and you don't have to pull all the way in. I believe the newer jetta models have more clearance than the "troubled jettas" do.we have somewhat gotten used to not pulling in so far but not all the time. We also refuse to get it repaired at our expense.
Front bumper separates from the vehicle when it touches a parking stop at low speed.dealership personnel acknowledge that this has happened to many people but gave us no warning when we purchased the vehicle.the body shop we took it too, carriage auto body in margate, fl, believes the bumper is not manufactured and installed correctly and that it is not the fault of the driver.

We hit a light poll and a telephone poll.we hit the light poll front and center and the telephone poll on the driver's side front.we hit both going 40 miles per hour and the damage was so sever that the car was wrapped around the polls, enough to break though the sub-frame, tear off the axel of the drivers front, and push engine upwards breaking the engine mounts.the damage on the driver's side continues to the driver's door causing it to be very difficult to open the door so the injured can be removed from the car.the driver's side tire do not explode; rather it is misshaped the rim, the wheel well, and the tire it self.none of the four air bags deployed.why?if someone needs to see the pictures or would like to see the pictures, please let me know and i will gladly e-mail pictures of the damage.thank you for your time!jessica a.rigaud.

Mid-1999 volkswagen introduced the jetta iv series.the coils suspension springs on the 4-cylinder tdi diesel are too tall and too soft, leading to extreme over steer and body roll in curves and extreme intolerance for wind turbulence at highway speeds created by nature, tractor trailers and (even) small cars.this is (nearly) an admitted defect, as volkswagen offers a spring upgrade kit for 4-cylinder jettas in its aftermarket catalog!nestled right there between the custom key fobs and floor mats!furthermore, reviews of the 2005 model reveal a complete overhaul to the suspension system.i have tried to correct the problem with stiffer and wider tires, to no avail.they need to be taken to task on this issue.i am reporting today, as it is only moderately windy and (yet) i have had difficulty maintaining stability at highway speeds.this could be an undetected factor in many incidents.

The car bottoms in the front-right side out when 4 passengers are in the car and you travel over relatively small bumps in pavement.this has happened 3 times over the life of this new car (approximately 4 months).the weight of the occupants was no more than 600 pounds, and the speed at the times of incident were all under 30mph.at the cars 10,000 checkup, i asked the dealer to inspect, and he reported that substantial damage has resulted to the sub-frame.since that time, it has happened again.at all times, the car was operated under normal driving conditions (daylight, low speed, within vehicle weight limits, and on normal pavement).i now am scared to drive with 4 passengers.is this possibly because the car is a diesel and therefore weighs more?have you heard of this complaint?thank you.
Struts (front) needed to be replaced at owners expense after warranty expired in spite of the fact that the problem was reported to the dealer at the time of delivery of the car (well within the warranty period).the report of problems was ignored by the dealer and not even recorded as a complaint until after the warranty had expired.when the dealer diagnosed the problem (after the warranty had expired) they indicated that the car must be immediately repaired for safety reasons.this safety problem existed beginning from the time of delivery.the dealer and vw have refused to address the cost related to this issue.*la

Enginechecklight came on with engine running rough. Dealer diagnosed broken mass air flow sensor and replaced. Manufacturer refused to extend warranty to this part. Many other owners report this part failing at 20k to 40k miles.
The car has been in the dealers hands for 6 weeks. They have all but said this a recurring problem with this model. They have told us for 2 weeks that the part is being shipped. We have yet to receive word of that actually happening. This seems to be a tremendous problem, virtually unheard of in my 40 years of driving experience. Thanks dmf. No safety defect listed within summary.
Engine light was on.driver took vehicle to dealer, and they stated that engine valves and hoses needed to be replaced.please provide any further information.
Vehicle runs out of oil every 1500 miles, and the transmission is very jerky. Windshield wipers were streaking because wipers were separating.instrument panel cup holder loose on tight side.the stick shift vibrates in 3rd gear due to selector shaft failure.
Engine check light stays on, indictating a defect. Vehicle will stall whilebeing driven, casuinga safety hazard. Dealer cannot determine cause of defect. Also, when slightly opening rear windows, vehicle will vibrate.
Vehicle consumes more oil than required, causing light to illuminate intermittently.dealer has been notified.
This entire scenario is unacceptable for a car, i had hoped to keep, as i am told that vw's can well near to the 200,000 miles plus. I am told they are reliable and being on the road myself, that had been a point of comfort when i purchased the vehicle. Being of limited income capacity, i thought i made a wise investment to carry me for many years without a car payment. I am scared to death now that something drastic could happen because of this situation, be it a break down on a late evening, dark stretch of road or greater further damage to the vehicle as well as me personally.mr. Witter, this is a major problem i want to believe you are not aware of, because a ceo of a company who purports service and a quality product would investigate and resolve such a large issue, in all cases, but most especially in warranty cases.there needs to be a major recall or someone will be injured or killed in an engine failure incident. You may end up finding yourselves in a class action suit. I believe proactive is more positive than reactive course of action.i look forward to a positive response from you indicating that you will have day apollo vwremedy my issue in the same manner the california dealer satisfied my sister's same defect. To date 3/2007 they continue the stance this is normal and refuse to service my vehicle for any future issue.
Warning that engine needs to be checked has shown up on dashboard since summer of 2000.we have taken car in two times and is now due for another service job, and light to engine check is still on for past six months.dealer simply shrugs their shoulders.cost a factor to repair?we have no way of knowing what is wrong with the car since last summer (now december 2001)if additional problems, we would not know for light is continually on.bought this car for my daughter to be safe driving.no help from dealer.
Oil light came on 2000 miles after oilchange/burning or leaking excessive oil,and oil level low. Passenger's window motor stopped working, resulting in window falling down,. Consumer contacted vw co, and was told they would get back to her, but never did. Consumer felt vehiclewas a lemon. Please add additional information.
Car burns oil and needs to be added every 1000 miles.after 5000 miles no oil left.passanger side glove box rattles.

While driving on rt. 495 near exit 19, i took my foot off the accelerator and i felt my speed continue to increase.i stepped on the brake and my speed continued to increase.i downshifted and when ilet the clutch out we really took off.depressing the brake had no effect.with the clutch depressed, managed to pull on to the shoulder and stopped.as i reached for the key, the engine shuddered and died.i was unable to restart the car and had to be towed.the result of this incident was that the engine self-destructed and had to be replaced.there were no trouble codes in the ecm and the tps showed no defects when tested.
Whenshifting gear into reverse andstepped on brakes to stopvehicle , and thenput it in drive, vehicle roared up, and there was a delay in shifting from reverse intodrive. Dealership was notified by consumer. When gear was shifted from reverse to drive, the vehicle rolls back about 2 feet before moving forward.the consumer's internet research result indicated that other consumers of this make of vehicle had the same problem.
I was driving my 1999 vw jetta at highway speeds, and it suddenly began to accelerate.i shifted the car into neutral, and the engine continued to rev to the redline.i then tapped the gas pedal and the throttle released.my wife had the same problem on a side road.the car began to accelerate, and she applied the brakes but could not stop the car.she turned the ignition off and was able to stop safely using the emergency brake.*la

When i shift from reverse to drive there is a 2 second delay and at times i can still be rolling back an additional 2-3 ft. Also my vehicle will accelerate w/o me touching the gas. I have to hit the brakes and at times this will not work. I was involved in an accident when i braked and my jette accelerated into the back of another vehicle. Please help.
At first start vehicle accelerated on it's own.consumer does not recall if gear was still in park or in drive. Consumer applied brake hard and shifted to neutral. Vehicle at dealership at this time.
Beginning to brake at red light, engine accelerated to redline. Brakes would not hold car. Had to place car in neutral to avoid collision. Turned off ignition to stop high rpm.
Car accelerated from 5 mph until hit the car in front.brake didn't work.this happened once before. Dealer insulted driver instead of a followup.
While driving 75 mph vehicle stalled.throttle speed sensor light flashed on the dashboard for a minute and went off.consumerhad the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanicdetermined that the throttle speed sensor needed cleaning.
While driving t vehicle will accelerate to high speeds upon release of the brakes. Dealer has been contacted.
While drivingvehicle stalled unexpectedly and thenengine revved.
Speedometer needle doesn't not read the correct speed that vehicle is traveling. Thedealership knows that a problem exists, but doesn't know what is causing it.
When pulling into a parking lot vehicle would not stop even though driverpushed brake pedal to floor. Vehicle accelerated uphill, crashing into a telephone pole. Vehicle was totalled.
While driving vehicle got stuck in full throttleand accelerated at a high speed. Consumer had to put vehicle in neutral to decreasespeed. The dealership indicatedthat this was caused by a failure in the engine control module. Ph
While driving at any speed vehicle would accelerate and lose control.
Driver went to pass vehicle when pedal got stuck , vehicle accelerated up to speeds of 80 mph. Brakes would not override it, and was not able to change gear.suddendly accelerator pedal resumed position and vehicle acted as normal. Dealer has been notified.
While in neutral consumer depressed the gas pedal andvehicle would not gain speed. Consumer applied force and pumped the gas pedal and vehicle would not engage.
While driving at any speed, under any acceleration, accelerator pedal fails and the vehicle's throttle does not respond.once while driving 70 mph on the e-way, vehicle began decelerating as if gas pedal were not depressed and i had to quickly pull over to shoulder to avoid being stranded in the middle of e-way.another time i pulled out into heavy traffic and accelerator pedal failed, nearly causing a serious accident.both times, epc light illuminated in dash cluster - i was able to reset the problem by shutting vehicle off and restarting engine.dealer diagnosed a failed valve in the throttle body.when i asked the service writer if this was a common problem, he replied "well, not all of them fail."to me this implies a widespread problem.i contacted vw and they would offer no assistance in replacing a part that controls the throttle - this should never fail!vw also would not help me when i went through 3 brake switches (part now subject to recall).vehicle needs new throttle body.part is approx. $800 + labor.why would the throttle fail on a vehicle well under 100,000 miles?primary systems (braking, accelerating) should never fail without warning.this is dangerous and unacceptable.
While driving at various speeds: the vehicle loses speed control (acceleration pedal non-responsive), the epc sensor light turns on, and the engine light turns on.without speed control i must quickly maneuver to the shoulder to avoid obstruction of free-flowing traffic.if i shut the engine off and turn it on again, the vehicle regains speed control until the next occurrence (there is no pattern).my mechanics handheld computer has identified an intermittent problem with the throttle body, which is a by-wire speed control system.having read similar complaints on the web, i suspect that this may be a common problem with this speed control device that costs almost $700 to replace (excluding labor).
While traveling at 70 mph vehicle started to accelerate up to speeds of 105 mph.clutch had to be disengage,d, but vehicle still was accelerating. Consumer had to shut car off, and made it toside toroad.
The windshield wipers were intermittent.the dealer stated the wipers were incompatible.the wipers did not work in cold weather and did not have the proper speed in warm weather.the driver side window had fallen down into the door, the locking mechanism had malfunctioned and was replaced, the metal triangle pieces on the doors had been replaced, the cruise control never worked from purchase, and the front brakes had to be replaced.the consumer would like to know if there was a recall on the wipers.(no recall for wipers)mrscc
I was pulling into a parking spot (going approximately 3 mph) when the car accelerated on its onw to approximately 45 miles an hour.(i did not have my foot on the accelerator.my foot was on the brake.)the engine was revving and it jumped a curb, crossed over an island of grass, a pedestrian sidewalk and landed in the middle of a two way street and finally stopped.luckily, thre were no pedestrians or vechicles in my way; otherwise, a major accident would have occurred. The dealer checked the car and could not find any defects and bascially blamed it on drive error.i also called volkswagen.volkswagen stated that since the dealer could not find any defects, there was nothing they could do.no other incidents have occurred since the initial one.(i, of course, was convinced that somehow i had caused the car to accelerate until i read the other incidents in this database.

While driving at about any speedvehicle suddenly accelerated out of control withoutprior warning. Also, transmission shifted gear roughly.
Vw window fell off track in to bottom of the door.
Window regulator going bad. Researched your site and found numerous complaints about this issue. Just purchased car used and was unaware of problem and of course it is too late for any extended warranties. This problem should be reconciled regardless of timeframe.
While driving to work, my headlights, dashlights, heater/defrost, all went out and my e-brake light came on.do to the conditions and the cold, my windshield fogged up extememly quickly and made it difficult to drive.this has happened many times since, almost on a daily basis.i figured out later on,that by moving the ignition switch around, everything went back to normal.i have not contacted the dealer about this due to my military schedule.i am deplpyed right now and am planning to contact the dealer in fargo as soon as i return.

Both driver and passenger side door windows keep falling off the tracks.dealer notified. Consumer adds that the window fell into the door while driving, causing the driver to shift attention while driving almost having an accident.
Consumer says thatthe rear driverside windows do not roll down. Consumer contacted the dealership.

Drivers window fell to the bottom of the door while the local dealership had the car changing oil, filter, etc. They will not fix it even though inspectionof the failed part clearly indicates inadequate design......plastic clips failed releasing the channel guides and allowing the window glass to fall to the bottom of the door.
Driver's side and passnger side windows have fallen down intodoor due to a faulty cable retractor. Dealer is aware of problem. Please provide further details.
Engine check light stays on, indictating a defect. Vehicle will stall whilebeing driven, casuinga safety hazard. Dealer cannot determine cause of defect. Also, when slightly opening rear windows, vehicle will vibrate.
Passenger's frontwindow regulator that holds window in place failed, andcausedwindow to slam down inside door panel.took vehicle to dealer, and they replacedregulator gear.please provide any further information.
Had window regulator replaced 3 times on drivers side and one time on passenger side with in a 22 month period.
While vehicle was parked without the ignition runningrear window exploded, cause unknown.please give any further details.
Front passenger window regulator had to be replaced in october of 2001, on 28 june 2002, driver front window regulator was replaced.volkswagen refused to replace the window regulator until consumer paid 50 percent of the cost.*jg
Driver's power window was rolled up and suddenly it plunged down into the door.motor still worked, but pieces of plastic were broken off on inside of the door.dealer statedclip had stress signs that caused them to collapse.
Since 14,000 miles driver's side window has come off the track on two occasions, andboth rear side windows came off the track one time each. Problem are still occurring. Dealer and manufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
3 of 4 windows failed within months of each other. First failure traveling wiht family on highway.window went down and would not roll up.second failure in rainy season in florida, window dropped into door.right front window stuck and motor overheats when try to use window posing possible fire risk.also poses possible entrapment since no way to force window down in event of being trapped.these are known issues by vw and they have yet to do anything about it.i hope it doens;t take death or injury for vw to notice the problems inherent in the design of their windows and regulators.
Just bought this used car and after using the window twice, the regulator broke.according to volkswagen, this is a reoccuring problem and there is not prevention against it.i'm from wi and can't have a broken window in the middle of winter.plus when i cannot do business in il anymore because my window doesn't work and it is too cold out to be driving like that.
Power window lift is broken.window will not operate, moving up or down.
I recently had a problem with my front passenger side window regulator.my window fell into the door.i called the service department at burlington vw located in burlington, nj on july 13 to try and get this fixed as soon as possible.i was told that they could put the window in the up position for me, but it would be a couple of weeks before they could actually fix the problem.on july 14, i decided to go to a repair shop(anthonys corner inc., located in mt. Holly, nj) that could hopefully fix the problem much sooner.the repairman at anthonys put the window in the up position and ordered a new window regulator for me.about a week later it came to my attention that vw is aware of this common problem, so i was hopeful that vw would cover the costs of the repair.i filled out the customer care form on vw.com july 24 explaining the problem that i was having.a vw customer care rep left me a voice mail message the next day, so i followed up with them on july 26.the vw customer care rep informed me that i needed to take my vehicle to a vw dealer for them to diagnose the problem, thus requiring me to pay a diagnostic fee for something i already knew was broke.in addition, i was told that this is the only way they will consider assisting me.i then called back to burlington vw on july 26, and spoke to someone in the service department.i was then told there was know need to schedule an appointment right now because the part is on national back order.additionally, i was told by the burlington vw repairman that since i have over 36,000 miles (vw good-will period) vw will not cover the cost of the repair.in conclusion, i received a call from anthonys july 27, letting me know that the window regulator had come in.in my opinion vw is hiding the fact that this model year (and maybe others) have defective window regulators.my other windows make noise occasionally, so i know its only a matter of time before another window drops into the door.
Power window was going down, heard snap and window never went back up.service center said it would be 5 days before they could get me in and they decided to duct tape my window so it would stay up.they said this is a common vw problem...somehting about a plastic regulator.nevr buy volkswagen.

The window regulators have been replaced on 5 occasions. Twice on the same two windows and now two different windows are defective.
Window arms should not be breaking on a 2.5yr old car with less than 50k mi.this is a product defect.
I own a 1999.5 volkswagen jetta iv gls.there is a major problem with the window regulators and volkswagen refuses to recall them.they know there is a problem as they have issued a 7-year extended warranty on the part.i have had to get the regulator replaced on my front passenger side window twice, due to window falling into door.this was under extended warranty.however my front driver side window (which i hardly ever use) has fallen into the door.i am now outside of the extended warranty period and the dealership is trying to charge me $500 to replace the regulator.i should not have to spend $500 i do not have on a part that is known and well documented to be faulty.this defective part poses several dangerous possibilities.for example i am currently driving with plastic where the window should be to secure the car from weather and intruders.i can hardly see through it; this is very dangerous, it is a huge blind spot. If there is an attacker i can not shut the window.i can not secure the car.if the weather was bad driving would be difficult.sometimes the faulty regulators make the windows stuck closed.if there was a wreck someone could get trapped inside.please put pressure on volkswagen to do a full recall on this part.everyone who has a recent volkswagen has experienced the window regulator failure.it is irresponsible and negligent for volkswagen not to recall this.
In my 1999 volkswagen jetta, all four power windows have had to be replaced in the last 5 years and now another has broken and needs to be replaced.a very shoddy product from what used to be a great car company.i've bought three vw's but never again.shame on volkswagen!
Power window on drivers side will not go down due to bad regulator and possible motor. This is the 4th window to have this problem on this car. Inoperable window, compromise the safety of any person(s) in vehicle. Example:in case of fire they may not get out, example : in case of assault they may not be able to roll window up.
Right rear window fell into door when powering it down and then back up.power motor sounds as if it is still working, therefore suspect the mechanical clips holding the window to the power motor must have failed. Research shows that window clips have been a problem for this make and model.in fact, on november 5, 2002 vw.com website was showing a press release explainingthat window clips were failing, and vw would be sending letters out to 1999-2002 vw ownersabout repairing/replacing the window clips with redesigned clips (note: this is not a part recall, but only a letter to owners). In addition, my front right window occasionally does not power itself from open to fully closed (it stops half way). Assume this is well known "power window voltage regulator" problem that vw is currently coveringthe repairs for (but i can never get the failure to repeat itself when i bring it into the dealers so they wont agree to tell vw it is broken until they actually witness the failure). ****dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****769315.

Driver and passenger side windows malfunctioned. Yh
I heard a snapping noise when i raised window. When i tried to lower the windows, the driver's side front window fell in between the door & panel.i've been told by the dealership that this part is on national backorder and i may not be able to get one for six weeks.

Dt: the contact owns a 1999 jetta old body style. 4 door sedan with 2. 0 liter engine. The carwas purchased in 1998.the car had the following problem; 4 windows fell down due tofaulty window regulators and or holding clips.the contact took the vehicle to volkswagen service dealer, who offered an extended warranty. The extended warranty was offered4 times .they repaired the windows 4 times. Customer still has problems with vehicle. Manufacturer has been contacted.
3 of 4 power windows have stopped working completely.ca vw dealership diagnosed that voltage regulator and motor needed to be replaced on all three windows.we feel that at 48,000 miles the power windows should not require a major overhaul.
Driver/passenger andright rear power windows havefallen withindoor frm.please give any further details.
Plastic clips on window regulator broke causing window to fall down into door. Unable to close window. This is the second time this has happened. It is a known problem throughout the volkswagen customer community. This product failure posses a safety risk and extreme inconvenience, as there is no window to provide protection from outside forces. The dealer replaced the part once under warranty. No matter who pays for the repair, the part will break again causing the same safety concerns. Volkswagen needs to provide swift recall action on this matter in order to prevent personal injury or property damage--vw would stand knowingly liable.
Volkswagen does not seem to think it's a safety issue when you are out of state driving home with your children on i75 in the middle of december while snowing and your window fall's down.i feel it is a safety issue when you cannot stop to call for help for the fact your in an unfamiliar place and you do not feel safe, so you proceed to drive on a hwy. With your window down for two hours while snowing. My kids were so cold when we arrived home, which i find ridiculous that we had to experience this in the first place, but yet still an additional three more times. It is well known on the internet of complaints of the window regulator being a defect and it's in the market for paying customers to be inconvenienced over and over again. No yet has volkswagen compensated the time and inconvenience this has caused vw owners. I only wish someone would have told me before my purchase of the amount of occurrences i would be dealing with on repairs, i would not have purchased a volkswagen. I will definitely educate anyone i come in contact with on what they will be faced with if they purchase a volkswagen.
On friday night, august 3, my wife was driving the car and lowered the window. When she attempted to raise it there was a clunk, and the window slid down into the door.
Electronic windows do not work andwill not roll down. They were stuck. Also, left rear side window fell in, and will come back out.consumer has been to different dealers, and was told it was a common problem. Regulator and motor needed to be replaced.
While driving, i went to crack open my driver side power window.the entire window dropped into the door and broke inside the door.it happened very fast and made a fairly loud noise.when i called my vw dealer, they said that this is happening due to plastic window clips expanding and breaking with excessive heat.i live in the south and it's been very hot.they told me that there is a backorder for the replacement parts (now with aluminum wiindow clips), but that i could bring my car in and they would put it in the vw "cue."i did so this morning.there were 8-10 vws with broken windows just in front of my car, with the exact same problem.this is only at one of two local dealers, and they both have as high of a volume/backorder.i am upset that they won't proactively replace other windows with the plastic clips.they report that the windows have to break before they'll pay for them.i am told that my extended warranty will cover the cost of replacement, but have no confirmatin of this yet.vw should do a national recall and fix all these windows for free.i will not buy another vw, and i'm hearing many people say this.this is not my first prototpye (happening across vws) problem since the 3.3 years i've owned the car.i've had a door seal fall completely off and have had major problems with bumper and curb clearance, causing me to have to have the entire front bumper and guard replaced ($500 for insurance deductible).the engine in the car seems to be fine, with the exception of the o2 sensor that had to be replaced at 1.5 years of ownership.i was told, but have no confirmation, that this sensor problem is also somewhat common with the newer vws.other than that laundry list, i love my car!
Front passenger-side power window has fallen into the door and will not come up.
Window regulators fail due to defective design sending glass crashing down inside the door with no warning.the part is being replaced with one that has been redesigned.volkswagen is aware of this problem but has failed to notify vehicle owners.this is a saftey issue.while operating a vehicle at highway speeds or in bad weather conditions one should not expect the window to fall down inside the door.my dealer has stated that they are replacing atleast one a day.
I understand that power window failures are not the worst safety concern for you. It was not for me.it was stressful having the window fall down in a less than pleasant neighborhood.it was annoying having to wait two weeks till the next available appointment.it was aggrevating having to tape up the window and deal with water damage.it was grating having things stolen from the car.it was unnacceptable that it happened less than 6 weeks later to the other window.some one will get carjacked and killed.
This is an extremely dangerous situation and the vehicle should be recalled.2 front windows just falling down during driving the vehicle is a hazard to the driver, other motorist and child occupants.
I was driving home from work.it was a nice day so i had the front windows open part way.when i hit the expressway, i decided to put the windows up.when i hit the switch for the passenger window, i heard the sound of plastic breaking.i looked over and saw the passenger window fall into the door.i drove home and removed the panel to find a couple of broken plastic clips in the bottom of the door.i have not contacted volkwagen yet, buy apparently this is an ongoing problem that volkswagen refuses to recall.
My 1999 vw jetta wolfsburg has major problems with the automatic window mechanisms. 3 of the 4 windows have failed for one reason or another. This is a faulty design, and vw will only cover the front 2 windows.
Regulator failed causing passenger side window to be ajar.nlm
While driving drivers side window fell down onto the door. Driver feels this is unsafe when driving because driverloses consentration of the road. Took vehicle to dealer, and they stated thatwindow regulator had malnfunctioned.
This is a known problem by volkswagen.this is the 4th time my window regulator has broken.the last time i spoke with vw and they said they acknowledge there is a problem.the last time my window fell, i was in a parking lot and a "crazy" person came running towards my car yelling the the police were going to get him.as i quickly tried to roll up my window, it broke.i was extremely upset and sped away.
Faulty driver's side power window regulator is dangerous because the window falls down into the door.the driver must negotiate continued driving without an operation window and is subject to safety risk.
Power windows are winding down by themselves and happened twice (10/3/03-10/04/03). I go outside and all the windows are down.if someone steals my car , then vw will have to buy be another!*la
1999, volkswagen, jetta wolfsburg edition. Front and back passenger side power windows will not go down; back driver's side window fell down into door. Passenger's side windows was stuck in the up positioncould represent ahazard should there be a wreck and the windows could not be let down. Driver's side rear window fell down into the door was a security risk, not only for being able to secure the car, but from someone being able to enter the car while driving. Volkswagen had a service order to repair the known defective mechanism in the late model 1999 cars and later, but it did not cover the early 1999 models, even though it was the same problem and defective parts. Neither the dealer on lorain avenue in north olmstedcleveland, ohio nor volkswagen of america will repair the defect without charge to the consumer.
Thanks
Front passenger's side window has been a constant problem .i have talked to several people who have had their regulators replaced numerous times . This is my third time and each time i 've had to pay to get it fixed.volkswagen will not admit there is a problem . It's a problem when you have no way ofkeeping rain out of the car .i have had other probems with this car which i don't have time to write about .
The power window regulators failed while driving on the freeway, causing the window glass to fall hard into the door panel, causing me immediate alarm. This is the 3rd such failure. It has occured once already on this same window, and the regulator was replaced with a "new design" by the dealership. This also occurred on the driver's side window previously. Each repair costs me $360, so my total for the 3 repairs over the past year have been $1080. This is a major safety issue as once cannot park their car with the windows open safely let alone drive at highway speeds or in bad weather. I have read numerous reports of these failures and also the dealerhsip has confirmed this and it's about time volkswagen of america did a recall and i get reimbursed.
Drivers side window (first front, then 1 week later rear) regulators failed.car was less than three years old at time.cost me almost $1,000 through the dealership to repair.
Both windows have fallen out while vehicle was being driven at highway speeds. Infant was in back seat both times it happened.
The drivers side window fell into the door and will not come up. Both the dealer and manufacturer were contacted and responded that it is the regulator. It seems that there have been many complaints with the same problem. I was told that volkswagen uses plastic pieces to support the window. Obviously it is a defect in the design, which needs to be fixed, but not at the consumers level.i was told that this is not covered under the warranty, but the car is not even 3 years old with hardly any miles.in my opinion, volkswagen needs to recall these cars and remedy the problem at no cost to the consumer. Please help.

The window in the front passenger door intermitently rolls down when the automatic locking occurs at 9.5 mph. The switch to control the window on the driver's side has failed. When this occurs the only way to get it to roll back up is to get out of the car and roll it up by turning the key in the door lock. Nlm
Window regulator on 1999 1/2 vw jetta broke twice, and dealer charged $87.00 for part that may last another 2,000miles. Part should be recalled and fixed for good.
Window just dropped down into the door. Plastic clips inside cracked.
The auto up feature of my 1999 volkswagen jetta driver side window has not functioned properly since i purchased the vehicle.over 50 percent of the time, the window does not stay closed.instead, it automatically retracts.i complained about this several times to the dealer in fargo nd during the two year warranty period on the car.they were never able to duplicate the problem while the car was in for scheduled maintenance.the problem continues to this day. *nlm
Power windows and rear center seatbelt first failed within months of purchasing the vehicle.dealer has made repairs but same components continue to fail in the same fashion.i never know when the driver or passebger window will fall into the door and cannot be raised until the whole assembly is replaced.the rear center seatbelt periodically retracts to the point where it will not release making it unuseable until the dealer repairs it.
Consumer was involved in a collision in whichseat belts did not lock up upon impact, and driver's/passenger's air bags did not deploy. Cause unknown, also steering rack and pinion was damaged .passenger window fell off twice.
Consumer on behalf of daughter.in may, the left front window fell down inside the door and the regulator had to be replaced.they were informed that the window regulator was a common problem with this vehicle.*jg
While driving about 65 mph passenger's side door glass fell down due to failure onglass support.vehicle could not be repaired due to over mileage.please provide more information.

Driver side and passenger side windows fall down inside door, then, customernot able to put window up.please provide any further information.
The drivers side window failed.nlm
The passenger window broke in the down position and became inoperable.
Vehicle runs out of oil every 1500 miles, and the transmission is very jerky. Windshield wipers were streaking because wipers were separating.instrument panel cup holder loose on tight side.the stick shift vibrates in 3rd gear due to selector shaft failure.
Vehicle's windshield wipers stopped working intermittently in inclining weather which makes visibility impossible. Dealer notified.tswiper motor replaced.
