After running up a curb in my 2002 gti 337 while turning left at an appropriate speed, the driver and passenger front airbags spontaneously deployed without any front-end collision.the deployment caused burns and brusing to my arms.the airbags had no reason to go off, as there was no damage the front bumper or hood.some of these vehicles were held up at port prior to delivery due to airbag sensor issues.these problems should have been addressed and repairedprior to delivery of the vehicle.

I was driving my 2002.5 gti down the road at about 40mph when the passenger side curtain and seat air bags went off.the road was straight and smooth other than normal expansion joints.my wife was in the passenger seat and has bruising and minor burns on her arm.once the bags went off the car shut off but i was able to maneuver it off the road way safely.i have contacted vwoa about the incident and i hope they will satisfactorily resolve the issue.

While driving in a parking lot at a speed of about 5 mph, i hit a curb and the driver side curtain airbags deployed.there was a loud bang and the car filled with smoke.i called vw and they said that regardless of the speed of the accident if the car feels anything near the crash sensors the airbags will deploy even though there was noneed and actually made the situation more dangerous and troublesome.

As i was driving home from visiting my parents in louisiana over the holidays. I was getting onto 45/75 going north from interstate 30w here in dallas, tx. As i cross over the lanes, i hear a really loud pop. There was a large flash and the car filled with smoke. I was really surprised, which caused me to swerve to miss another car. I had no idea what went wrong. My first assumptions were that either i blew a tire or that someone had shot a firearm at my vehicle. I pulled over downtown and inspected the vehicle. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the exterior of my vehicle (tires were fine and i did not hit anything). For some reason my passenger side upper front and rear air bags deployed as did the side air bag in the seat. I have no idea why this happened and have never had any issues with the airbags. I am very happy and fortunate that i did not have a passenger in my car at the time and that i did not get into an accident. I am reporting this to vwoa.

After hitting a minor pothole the front air bag unexpectedly deployed.*nlm

The airbag warning indicator light in the instrument cluster illuminated and stayed on.the driver's seatbelt buckle part (1y1858471g - "fcn buckle") had failed.this part also failed 7/06 at 45,900 miles along with the comparable part for the passenger's seat.the airbag system is inoperative when this part does not function. In 8/06 vw made a partial, goodwill warranty adjustment.

My wife and i were driving out of parking lot, turning into the main street when suddenly we hear a loud explosion and inside the car was cover in a cloud of smoke and white power.it took us few min to realize what happened since we both had ringing ear for a moment. We finally we were able to come back and think straight again to realize that the front passenger and side-head curtain airbag deployed, we inspected the car to see if we got hit another car, no external damage indication any type of crash.

The contact owns a 2002 volkswagen gti.while driving 75-80 mph, the side air bags deployed without warning and the vehicle lost complete power.as of december 13, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle.the current and failure mileages were 67,000. Updated 3/4/08 the dealer decided to fix the vehicle at their expense.

The contact owns a 2002 volkswagen gti.while driving approximately 35 mph, the contact drove over a medium sized pothole, and the driver side curtain and side rear air bags deployed.there were no injuries or crash involved.the current mileage was 58,580 and failure mileage was 58,570.

The vehicle failed to go into first gear and subsequently the transmission had to be disassembled to make repairs to the first, second and third gears.also the passenger air bag deployed without any impact.

The contact owns a 2002 volkswagen gti.while driving 55 mph, the passenger side air bag suddenly deployed.the contact was injured.there was no crash or impact.the vehicle is parked at the contact's residence and has not been inspected by a mechanic.the failure and current mileages were 70,000.updated 05/19/08 the consumer stated volkswagen still has the vehicle after 3 months, they have not been able to get the parts. Updated 05/20/08

I was driving on the highway in my 2002 volkswagen gti when suddenly the side and curtain airbags deployed for no reason at all. I did not hit a pothole, rock, or any object of any kind. The engine then shut off but i managed to safely move my car to the right lane. As a result of the airbag deployment i suffered minor burns and a sore back. I called volkswagen of america and they immediately began telling me it was not their fault and that i must have hit something. They advised me to bring the gti into the nearest dealership to check for damage. The dealership inspected the car and found no damage. The technician told me there was no reason for the airbags to have deployed. He then sent that information to volkswagen of america. Two day later they called me to ask me to once again bring the car into the dealership so that a representative could inspect the car. I will be bringing the car in tomorrow. I have researched this problem on the internet and found that this is a problem that has been reported over 400,000 times. It does not seem that volkswagen is going to pay to fix the problem since my car is no longer under warranty. I am now pursuing a class action suit against volkswagen of america. I am absolutely stunned that volkswagen of america can get away with not taking responsibility for their manufacture defects. I will never own another vw again, and i will do all that i can to discourage anybody i know from purchasing a volkswagen. These claims need to be taken seriously, and something needs to be done about it before serious injury, or even death, occurs.

Spontaneous airbag deployment 8-10-05i was driving alone down a boulevard at 35 mph when i heard a loud noise like a gunshot from my right side. The side curtain airbags had deployed on the passenger side leaving me with an ear ache, as well as interior full of smoke and debris. Worst of all, the engine stopped running. I coasted about 200 feet then turned onto a side street. I'm fortunate that i did not come into contact with any other vehicles or pedestrians.i did not hit a pothole, rut, curb or anything else. I was driving down a well-traveled smooth road in denver (south broadway). The airbags just deployed for no apparent reason. After gathering my wits and airing out the car, i restarted it and drove directly to my local vw service facility. The next day, my service advisor said the mechanic saw evidence of an impact on the side of the frame. I explained that the car was on smooth pavement when this happened. I also mentioned that 18 months ago i had hit a square-edged rut in the road that caused some rim damage to the front-right wheel and also caused a tire impact separation (bubble). Perhaps this is the impact mark that the mechanic detected.i gave this statement to vwoa at my advisor's request. I explained that this is a safety problem and should be covered under warranty as the car is less than 4 years old and under 50,000 miles. My local service advisor called me back to say that a supervisor will determine how to proceed with repairs.evidently, this is not automatically a warranty item. Vwoa needs to step up and fully investigate this matter and take preventive actions immediately.there are several vw owners in my immediate family. We are all very concerned about the airbag safety of this vehicle even after repairs are completed.

I own a 2002 volkswagen gti. I was at afull stop on an intersection making a right turn, and as soon i turned,my passenger side curtain airbag and seat airbag exploded. They did not even do what it suppose to do,the airbags just exploded! i took it to hammer lane volkswagen here in stockton but they told me that it is not under warranty because they found a smalldent under my car. They were trying to tell me that it was the cause why they deployed. They were telling me that i ran over something at the time of the incident. I searched on the internet and found that 107 complaints to nhtsa on 2001-2003 golf, gti, and jetta that side-impact airbags were activited improperly. I printed that page, showed it to them and asked them for an explaination, but could not give me any specific answer that i need. I was also asking for an explaination why my airbags did not deploy when i ran over something about two weeks ago before the incident, on the driver side which caused a big dent underneath? this is really ridiculos what happened to me. They are trying tocharge me about $4,000.00 for the damage and labor. They suggested to just call my insurance "maybe " they will pay for the damage. I hope this won't happen to those people whose driving these cars.thank you very much for your time reading my complaint.

I was driving my 2002 vw gti vr6 on a semi-rough section of the parks highway in alaska at approx. 30-35 mph when the passenger side airbags suddenly deployed. The road was no worse than a maintained gravel road, there was no "crash" or accident, and i didn't hit a pothole. The dealer looked at my otherwise mint condition and undamaged car and said that the computer had "crash data" and possible gravel dings on the undercarriage (which could have occurred at anytime in the past 10 months i have owned this vehicle as i frequently drive on maintained gravel roads). It was the technician's belief that these minor gravel dings on the undercarriage should not have caused the airbags to release and that the airbag replacements would most likely be covered under warranty, but it was vw's ultimate decision. My insurance adjustor said basically the same thing as minor dings to the undercarriage are expected as normal wear and tear and told the dealership that they were stretching it when they came up with a possible explanation. Vw headquarters came back and said since there is "crash data" in the computer and the car has small dings on the undercarriage, it was not covered under warranty as it was a crash. I think vw is missing the point by saying that since there is "crash data" in the computer, the airbags are my problem. The real question is should the airbags have deployed under these conditions? the dealer techs say no, my passenger and i say no, and my insurance and their investigator says no. This airbag deployment almost caused an accident and resulted in my passenger being bruised. *nlm

Consumers son was driving the vehicle.while pulling away from the stop sign, hitting a minor pot hole, all the airbags in the vehicle deployed.there was a loud gun shot-like explosion, white powder filled the vehicle.the vehicle was driven to mag for immediate inspection.mag determined that the interior was significantly damaged.a volkswagen representative investigated the situation and the judgement was for the the expense for repairs be volkswagen's.a total of fifteen to twenty parts were required for repair.*jg

While driving 55mph on i-65 in ky side airs bags inadvertently deployed without any impact or collision.managed to get to emergency lane without any accident.brought to dealership.at first, dealership denied fault, but after several inspections concluded that no collision or impact occurred.dealership needed approval from vwoa to fix under warranty.air bag specialist sent out from vwoa to inspect.car is currently at dealership still waiting on decision.

Thepassenger side air bagdeployed without instance. Volkswagen of america claimed this was not their issue, and consumershould take it up with the insurance company.

While driving i encountered an uneven spot in the road ( like a pothole) and the airbags on the right side of the car ( side airbag and side curtain) deployed. The problem is that it was not a significant impact to the car. There is no damage to the car other than the airbags now requiring replacement. Even the alaignment seems fine although the dealer is checking it out to be sure. I believe the airbag sensor was defective (too sensitive) and should not have deployed the airbag. When the airbags are deployed (for no apparent good reason) it is obviously distracting to the driver and can create a dangerous situation. For me it was downright scary. I thought someone shot at the car. The dealer seems perplexed as to why the bags would have deployed without an impact significant enough to damage the car. Now, even though i didn't wreck the car, i and my insurance company are left with the cost of repairs on a component that i believe was defective and caused this whole mess.

This is a complaint for a 2002 volkswagen gti. While i was driving, the passenger side curtain, pillar, and seat airbags all deployed. There is no damage at all to the vehicle. I contacted volkswagen to repair the car under their warranty but they refuse to repair the vehicle under the warranty since they claim that there is crush data stored in the vehicle computer. My wife who was sitting in the passenger seat has her leg bruised because of the airbag deployment. This is a very serious safety issues since the airbag deployment made a very loud noise, and fill the car in "white powder". This almost cause an accident in itself because of the noise and the ringing in my ear for the next minute or so. This is also not the first case of this kind of airbag deployment. I research on the web after in incident and found people who have similar experience in a vehicle of the same model and other volkswagen vehicle. Below are the links for themhttp://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1558886http://tech.bentleypublishers.com/thread.jspa?messageid=104943&tstart=0

I was driving my company car (golf gti 1.8t - mi license vvd 493) along 86th street in indianapolis, in on saturday 25th may 2002 with mr dario rossi (sales manager of magneti marelli motorsports) sitting in the passenger seat; when crossing ditch rd at about 20 mph i hit a pothole that was not signaled with the right front wheel and the two side airbags on the passenger's side went off (from the passenger seat and from the roof), hitting mr.rossi. Also the ignition cut off and shut down the engine.

The driver side seat and side curtain airbags deployed on my 2002 volkswagen gti 337 edition for no readily apparent reason.this left me with a ringing ear, sore shoulder, and in a very shaken state.the dealership that i took the car to for factory repair at first agreed that there was no damage to indicate any sort of accident.two days later a factory engineer (apparently from vwoa) examined the car and found a nick in a metal beam.this nick (smaller than a dime) is apparently what caused the airbags to deploy.the dealership has stated that my insurance would have to cover the repairs as they are not under warranty because of this nick.i'm currently in the process of filing a claim through the bbb auto line.they have a process through mediation and arbitration that will hopefully resolve my situation without having to resort to a lawsuit.i strongly feel that they should have taken care of the repair without question, especially considering the dangerous nature of airbag deployment. *nlm

2 out of 4 coil packs failed while drivingcausing the vehicle to stall. Manufacturer is aware of problem, but will not replace component until they all fail..

2002 vw gti vr6 coil pack failure while driving on the highway almost got rearended because car slowed down and bucked. 3rd coil pack to fail on this car. The 2nd time failure damaged my o2 sensors which had to replaced due to car running rich, i believe. Coil packs on vr6's need to be addressed.

4th ignition coil pack failure on my 2002 vw gti. My volkswagen has less than 25k miles on it and has had 4 failed coil packs. Each time was a different situation/weather/speed.

While driving, vehicle lost all source of electric power causing engine to fail. Dealer stated that parts are on back order. Please provide additional information. Ts

I have a 2002 vw gti 1.8t. The ignition coils have failed three separate times. Each time i was driving the vehicle in traffic on the interstate, and almost caused an accident. The car would only drive at 30 mph.i hesitate to drive the vehicle because one of the faulty parts( the part number ends in i)is still in my car.volkswagen will only replace the defective parts when they become defective. The problem can lead to a serious accident. I feel my safety is in jeopardy every time i drive the car!

Vehicle #1 failed 4 times in 6 weeks, dead batteries, alternators, would not start....vehicle replaced, same problem with vehicle # 2 8 days after purchase......vw will not admit to defects

Vw cannot bring vehicle into compliance with warranty......refuses to replace vehicle. No safety defect listed.

I have a 2002 volkswagen gti 1.8t with 4700 miles at the time of this common coil pack failure. I was on my way to work when i was making a left turn at a busy intersection. One of my coil packs went while turning onto main road and causing my car to sputter and lose power. On coming traffic had slam on their brakes to avoid hitting me. Thankfully an accident was averted. This is a safety issue. These coil packs are failing at epidemic levels. Major newspapers are doing articles on this problem.my car had to be towed while i waited in freezing temperatures and i missed work. Vw will only replace bad coil packs as they fail and my dealer admits that it will happen again. They replaced the bad coil pack but i still have 3that are going to fail at some point. Can you imagine living with this in your mind? please do something about this because it is a dangerous situation.

While driving at 35 mph vehicle wouldn't accelerate. The dealership indicated that this was caused by two of the ignition coils burning out.

I have a 2002.5 volkswagen gti 1.8t with a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. All vw engine ignition systems are affected. The coil or coilpack fails due to poor manufacture or design. In some cases multiple cylinders will loose power. I lost cylinder #1 when accelerating away from an intersection. I lost cylinder #2 while attempting to merge with traffic on surface streets. In both cases the significant lose of horsepower could have caused me to remain in an intersection longer than expected and cause an accident. Vw is currently replacing failed coils free of charge and providing rental cars when a replacement cannot be performed immediately. However, vw will not replace all coils, just those that fail. This leaves the others to fail and potentially cause accidents. I must drive with the knowledge that i could lose power from one or more cylinders at any time. This is especially dangerous at highway speeds and heavy traffic or when crossing any intersection where cross-traffic has the right-of-way.

Vw 1.8t coil pack failures are one of the most common problems with these cars today. If a coil goes out you are not running on all of your cylinders and could cause a problem while driving. Ts

Coilpacks are prone to failure, causing the car to violently lose power.also having an issue where the car is trying to start itself again with the clutch depressed.

Engine coil failure. Car lost power and was only running on 3 of 4 cylinders.

Consumer called complaining about having problem with the ignition coil. Dealer has replace only one out of the six coil. Please provide further information. Ts

The engine light came on. Consumer had vehicle serviced. The dealership indicated that 3 out of 4 ignition coils misfired. This is a common problem, that could make the vehicle inoperativeand shut done engine per dealership. Tsall 4 ignition coils were replaced. 3 ignition coils were replaced under warranty.

Ignition coil pack failure

Check engine light came on, car lost power. I figured it was an engine coil, because this has happened to me before, last time it was covered under warranty, #6 coil. Since i was 30 miles away from dealer, i took my 2002 gti to a local mechanic, who diagnosed the problem as the # 5 ignition coil. I called the dealership to find out if there was a recall or extended warranty on this part since this was the second one to fail. Dealer said "no recall and the charge would be about $200.00 since the vehicle is no longer under warranty. Vehicle has 50,850 miles at this time. Since it wasn't covered, i had it fixed locally. Gti has the 24 valve vr 6 engine.

Ignition coil pack failure, coil pack #1 and #2.first of two differnent occasions.

Part failure on my 2002 vw gti.coilpacks fail and cause car to lose major loss of power and reliability.undriveable.almost caused a accident when passing a large truck.this has happened twice.

Car was running rough, smelled bad, and was considered un-drivable by my dealer. Vw towed the car in. In about 30 minutes, my dealer informed me that one coil pack had failed and they would have to order the part. I asked if they could just replace all 6 of the coil packs as there seems to be a history of them failing. Dealer said vw would not approve such a preventative maintenance action. They also told me the part was on a national backorder and they did not know when they would receive it. I was provided $25/day for a rental car. I'm not too upset with the handling of this one incident, but i'm very concerned that there are arguably 5 other 'time bombs' in my car waiting to fail and leave me stranded in a much less convienent manner than this first failure. With such a high number of coil pack failures in vw's line [both the 1.8turbo and the vr6], i wish vw would issue a recall once the part supply is available. This problem along with a chronic warm-start stalling issues has resulted in me not being able to recommend vw to my pals.

Engine running rough, possible coil pack in ignition failure.

Coil packs on the vw 1.8t motor....i had ignition coil #1 fail this week....they are failing in a number of 2002 1.8t's.the dealer replaced the failed one with a the new "j" type coil but i have 3 other coils that can fail at any time strangling me on the highway or in the new england cold weather (as the case earlier this week).i would like vw to replace all me defective coil packs with the new "j" type before i get stranded again.ts

Vw policy on there defective coil packs is to replace the broken coil with a new one and send the driver back on the road with 3 defective coils just waiting to leave them stranded.i am pushing for a recall do to the safety concerns of the near absolute failure of the defective "h" coils and possible collisions with other vechicles.

Had a coil pack failure causing car to stall and decrease in power which almost caused an accident while driving through an intersection. Vw should issue a recall with this problem. *nlm

Had two coils go out on my 2002 gti 1.8t as i was leaving my house. Car lost all power and was un driveable. Had to be towed to the dealer. Only the two failed coils were replaced leaving me to worry about when and where the others will fail causing my car to become once again un drivable.

The ignition coil was found to befaulty.phscc

Ignition coil failure on my 2002 vw gti 337.coil on cylinder #3 failed, cause rough idle and signifigent loss of engine power.

Multiple coilpack failures on 2002 vw gti 1.8t. Dealer refused waranty service claiming aftermarket spark plugs being the cause of the part failure. Car had 2 incidents of coilpack failures prior to the installation of aftermarket spark plugs. Total of 3 failures within the first 8 months of owning the car. (*** the incident date listed below is inaccurate due to having multiple failures on different dates***)

Coil pack went out on my vw gti 1.8tpart on national backorderquoted 2+ weeks with rental car

Ignition coil failed after 1900 miles.this seems to happen to all vw's nowadays there really should be a recall as i still have 5 faulty parts since only one coil was replaced

I purchased a new, 2002 vw gti 1.8t in august 1 of 2002 from howard cooper volkswagen in ann arbor, michigan. On december 16, 2002, my gti with only 5200 miles started rumbling and shaking violently while being driven in a cold morning. The ''check engine'' light began flashing, and the car lost power and was unable to accelerate.i researched and i found countless vw and audi owners who had experienced the same failures on their vehicles with the 1.8t engine on more than one ignition coil. The car sat in the dealers' lot for more than two weeks waiting for an ignition coil that was on national backorder.

3 ignition coils failed while driving on two separate occasions.this resulted in vehicle stalling on highway.consumer had to wait 4 weeks for replacement coils in both incidents.dealer adviser consumer will not replace remaining coils until failure.first incident occurred mid-october 2002.2nd incident in december 2002.

Ignition coil pack failure. Ts

I bought a new 2002 volkswagen golf gti1.8t on june 22, 2002.on january 29, 2003 i had to have it towed to the dealership where i had purchased it for the #2 ignition coil failure.at that time, the car only had 10,600 miles on it.now, as i drive down route 93 from nh to mass each day for work, i brace myself for the time that the next coil fails.each time this happens, there is a considerable loss in power, to the point that the car can stall. The car begins to "buck" and stagger, and at highway speeds, this becomes very dangerous.as volkswagen is well aware, this is an epidemic problem with the 1.8t engines in all of their cars.they refuse to replace all 4 coils at once.therefore, it's just a matter of time that this happens again to my car, as well as hundreds of thousands of buyers that have either experienced this problem already or will be.there needs to be a recall on these parts, or at the very least, an investigation on the ignition coils and the loss of safety associated with the comparable loss of power.hopefully, this can be done before someone gets injured or killed.

Vw of american needs to issue a recall and replace free of charge all coilpacks on their 1.8t and 24v vr6 engines.if you visit www.vwvortex.com, you will see many complaints and concerns that these critical parts are failing in large numbers, thus posing a major inconvenience and potential physical endangerment or death if this critical engine component should fail suddenly while in motion!vw is in denial, and many of us are counting on your organization to investigate.a recall of coilpacks should be issued in my opinion.

Coilpacks are prone to failure, causing the car to violently lose power.also having an issue where the car is trying to start itself again with the clutch depressed.

Left work after sunset. On my way home my headlights stopped working. I then noticed that my turn signals, wipers, and defroster stopped working as well. Luckily i am a mechanic so i was able to find the problem as soon as i got home. That was after driving 5 miles with no lights at all on the exterior of the car. The problem was the ignition switch. When i took everything apart i noticed that the wire and connector was melted. I replaced the ignition switch, melted wire, and connector. I have the old part and the receipt. My only concern is that my car could have caught fire.

I own a 2002 vw gti, today with 2639 miles on it one of my coil packs died, which through some research is a very common cause. I was travelling around 60-65 mph on the highway when this happened, losing complete power and almost getting hit. My car had to get towed 40 miles to the dealership, which in turn told me that they would only replace the one coil pack not all three, knowing that the other 3 will eventually fail and cause some trouble again. This is ridiculous my wife owns a 2003 vw jetta , what if, heaven forbid, one of us were to get into an accident because of this when it could have been fixed in the first place. I'm thoroughly disgusted with this.

Brake lights completely failed.

I own a 2002 jetta vr6 and my brake light switch has gone out. I have read the latest recall number 06v183000, however, volkswagen wanted to charge me for the repair stating my car was not found to have any recalls on it. My brake lights went out while driving and i did not know it. Someone almost ran into the back of my car.

My car at high speeds (50mph - 65mph) the gas pedal "dies" or looses authority and becomes un-responsive. At times as the gas pedal goes dead the car also shuts off at 65 mph causing a dangerous situation not only for my self but cars around me. I have take my car to my local mechanic but can not figure out the cause of the problem. Multiple parts and sensors have been replaced and inspected with out a solution. This is my only car therefore i continue to drive my car with hopes that an accident does not occur. I have taken the all the steps within my control to solve this problem but have not been successful. I have not heard a responds from volkswagen. Thank you

My clutch pedal went down to the floor while driving and never came back up. It was fixed (replaced the master clutch cylinder) one month ago for a similar problem.

Clutch failed, acceleration diminished, only 63000 miles with regular tune ups, oil changes.also mass air flow sensor and oxygen sensor defective; car doesn't idle correctly, sometimes doesn't start.started at 48000 miles.

Early clutch failure.the clutch in my vw 2002 gti failed at 23000 miles.

Clutch defective at 19000 miles. Clutch plate found with excessive wear, fused to flywheel.

The clutch pedal sinked to the floor gradually over the last 3 days.

Park/neutral switch failed on a manual transmission.

I have a 2002 volkswagen gti with approximately 42000 and discovered my manual transmission was slipping in every gear.after bringing my car to lindsay volkswagen in sterling, va, i was informed that the problem was bad clutch and that the repair would not be covered under my warranty.after some research online, i have discovered several identical situations of other owners of 2002 volks gti 1.8t manual and the company's refusal to cover it under warranty or investigate why a clutch needs to be replaced at under 45,000 miles.accordingly, i can attest that i operate my vehicle in a safe and legal manner and in accordance with what a reasonable person would consider competence and care.

The park/neutral switch malfunctioned , which caused the vehicle to start in gear without depressing the clutch. Which resulted in an accident.(manual transmission)the unit failure allowed the vehicle to start in neutral or any gear.scc

"switches" or sensors in both front seat belt latches failed at the same time requiring the replacement of both latch mechanisms.one of the replacement seat belt latch mechanisms was defective. These devices communicate with the air bag system as to whether a seat belt is in use.in the event of an accident, the air bag(s) may not deploy properly as the result of a faulty "switch" or sensor leading to unintended injury or death (vis-a-vis a proper deployment) to the driver and/or passenger..

Drivers side seat (velour not leather) w/ vw cold weather package (heated seats), when heated seat was turned on it would shock me, the driver.this happened over the course of 3 or 4 days and now it does not work at all.

Roughness, corrosion, white spots on my car's rims.the brake pads are causing this problem. I am looking to have the stock rims replaced. Along with the stock brake pads that came with the car. I know of all most 200 cars that have these issues with their rims. The problem is the stock brake pads are eating away at the special finish that is on the rim. Vwoa does not want to do anything about it.more info here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=569321.

I was driving on the freeway, when the brakes locked up and the abs light came on.

Over 200 2002 vw gti 337 edition owners have also claimed to have similar problems of pitting, black spots, corrosion, roughness, and/or white spots on their wheels as well and have supplied pictures for all to view publicly on online forums to prove their case. As a group we have approached volkswagen of america (vwoa) about the problem using my car as the test car. We all opened case numbers with vwoa expressing our concerns and my wheels were sent to vws testing center in wolfsburg, germany where the wheels were determined not to be defective, leaving many angry and confused enthusiasts out to dry. Instead of fixing the problem, vwoa contacted a small percentage of those who had opened case numbers to offer them a $25 gift certificate, good toward vw merchandise or service. This action only served to douse fuel on an already raging fire. Once vwoa learned of our reaction to this insult, they decided to stop calling, leaving the rest of us with no response from the manufacturer as promised. We have no choice but to seek legal action in order to remedy this situation. Some facts:- 1,500 gti 337 editions were manufactured for the u.s. I have a 2002 vw gti special edition 337, which came with 18"x7.5" bbs rc wheels.with in a few months of owning the car, i and 200+ owners have noticed some corrosion and pitting around the wheel.either due to the clear coating or the brake pads.we have contacted vwoa to have the wheels replaced by warranty, they denied any issues.offered a $25 gift certificate to a certain few, now a few months back they do admit to the issues and also admitted to replacing all1750 owners bbs rc wheels.we filed with the bbb to expedite the issue and vwoa requested for 30 days to finalize the decision.it has been well over 30days and now are asking for 30 more days.we would like to have this resolved and have the wheels and brake pads replaced.

Driving my car for a while, i start noticing the smell of burned rubber from the engine and when is cooling down and i do not know what the problem is.

Widespread problem known by manufacturer- apparently only repairing as part fails. Unacceptable- should be replaced on a recall-type basis for known problem.safety related due to sudden nature of part failure causing driver distraction.nlm

I have a 2002 vw gti 337 that was purchased on 7/2/02.i had 7777 miles when a coilpack went out rendering the car undrivable.volkswagen of america knows that this is a very common problem with their coilpacks and have not issued a recall on them.if my wife were in the car when this happened and she was left stranded on the side of the road, no telling what could have happened.right now vw will only replace the bad coilback but not the other three (4 cyl).so driving the car is this state will only pose another risk for future problems and hazzards. Also note that there is a national backorder on these parts and i have yet to get a replacement for the one that went out at 7777 miles.luckly i have a loaner from a friend but without that, my car would be a giant paperweight.please force vwoa to recall these coilpacks.everytime i'm on a road trip i worry about one of the other three going out in the middle of nowhere.and if i was lucky enough to break down near a dealer, the chances of them having a replacement is like me winning the lottery.

Thank you

Window regulator failed.window was down and when the switch was hit to bring it back up, it remained down and made an awful sound, as if the glass was shredding inside. Window had to be taped up and did not get an appointment to fix it until 2 weeks later

Both driver side and passenger side windows (power) "fell" down into the door.independent service station repaired with a window repair kit.

Parts have been on back order for over a month, this first happened on 8/14/2002 on the right side and them the left side failed on 9/13/2002.nlm

We purchased this car 8/17/02. On 8/21/02, while parked in our driveway we attempted to put drivers side front window up at which point window glass fell down into door panel.we had to drive 30 miles to the dealer to have repaired. The repair was not finished until 8/21.we were not told of any possiblily of this happening again nor that there was an ongoing investigation or any additional complaints of this type.today, 9/14/02, while again parked in our driveway, while putting passenger front window up, the glass fell down into the door panel just as the driver side had less than a month ago.these are power windows.we again drove car to dealer 30 miles away - with a thunderstorm brewing.this was a saturday and so the service department was not opened.numerous sales people made comments that they have seen many vehicles coming in with this problem - they showed us a box of broken clips made in usa from cars already repaired and said the vw was going to replace all clips with metal once made by panzer. We were told that in temps above 75 the clips are failing.why is there no defects investigation. If this dealer has fixed this many clips already. Also, if the dealer knew there was a problem, then why, 3 weeks ago when the first clip failed, would they not have repaired the passenger side while they were fixing the drivers side.please help.nlm

Seems like everyone that owns a mk iv jetta or golf has a window clip failure in this car, dropping the window into the door!

My car window failed only 3 days after i bought it.i was told by the dealers and a representative from the volkswagen corporate offices that the reason they can't get it fixed in a reasonable amount of time is it is on back order from the factory because the driver's side or passenger's side window clips break in over 50% of new volkswagen gtis and golfs within the first year.y

Wheels on my 337 gti are corroding much like others who have complained already.pitting/ roughness/ spotting--all problems on the bbs oem wheels.mine aren't as severe a case as others, but i fear they will only get worse since the car is only 1 year old.

Each wheel of my 2002 vw gti 337 has been impregnated w/ wheel brake dust.the dust has not been removable since it has embedded itself in the clear coat.the finish on each of the wheels has also gotten rougher over time, which i believe is a result of the brake dust eating away at the clear coat finish.

The finish of the bbs rc wheels that came with my 2002 vw gti 337 is pitting and corroding away.there are over 200 other gti 337 owners that are having the same problems.despite frequent cleaning with approved chemicals, excessive brake dust is pitting into the special finish of the said wheels and causing discoloration and/or peeling of the clear coat on the wheels.

Oem wheels have begun to corrode. Presence of black, rough spotting and white peeling on finish of wheels. Believe to be due to brake pad dust even though wheels have been cleaned by hand at least once a week. This problem has been reported by hundreds of other owners of this one particular limited edition vehicle.

I own a 2002 vw gti 337. This was a special edition vw that was produced. There were 1500 made for the usa and 250 made for canada. There were a number of special features included from the factory in this vehicle. Two of those special features were 18inch bbs rc rims, as well as upgraded brakes. This is where the problem lies.the rims came with the car have a special look to them. Its called ball-peened which then is clear coated over top to protect the rims many companys c;ear coat rims as a way to give them a shiny finish and to protect from wear and tear better. This is where the problem arises. The rims that were put on the car are pitting and getting very rough like a sandpaper feeling to them as well as in certain spots some sort of whit spots. The composition of the brake pads seem to be eating thru the finish of the wheels which leaves you with the rough feeling ans well as black brake dust specs embedded in the rim. As a car enthusiast my car is washed at least once per week by hand it has never been to an automated car was either. Now i live in the northeast so the argument about salt sand and are winters could be brought up as the reason the rims have turned out this way. However my car is put into storage before the winter and is not taken out until spring time there for never seeing any harsh climates or chemicals. I wash the rims by hand with only soap and water. My car has only 5800 miles on it but the rims have the look and texture of one that has had a much longer life. Ther are approximately 200+ people with the same problems right now that are having identical problems that i am having. I know of this many people because of the site vwvortex.com on that website there are a series of forums, under the volkswagen forum head is a sub forum called 337/20th anniversary which in that forum there is a thread titled vw wants to know about owners who are having issues with bbs rims.

The wheels/rims on my vw gti 25th year edition (only 1500 built in the us) is corroding because of the excessive amount of dust brake sticking to the walls and surfaces of the "special" oem bbs wheels. There are at least 200+ cars affected by this default. (source:http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=569321 ) vwoa doesn't offer any solution to that problem and "recommends" to clear the wheels more often. I clear my wheels each week!

Oem rims are pitting and corroding even though i take very meticulous care of them. After researching the problem it seems that almost all vw gti 337 edition owners are experiencing the same problems.
