I have a 2000 volkswagen bettle and since the car has had about 30000 miles i have had problems with the air bag system.according to volkswagen the problem is the wiring for the air bags is located under the seats and because of this i have had the air bag light reset 2or 3 times finally they said i would need a wire harness installed so i paid a couple hundred dollars for that to be done in aug 2003 now the air bag light is on again every time the light comes on it causes the air bag systme to shutdown this is a big saftey issue since 2/3 rds of the time the car has been on the road the airbag light is on i found out this is a problem with the beetle and they installed the harness on the new ones to fix thiswell i had that installed and it is broken again i called vw and they want me to pay another 95 for a diognostic plus and then they will decide if they will repair it at no cost this should be a recalled item it plagues the beetle and it is a saftey issue and i cant keep paying for the same repair please help me.
Aibag warning indicator light activated for no cause.
I am the original owner of this 2000 volkswagen beetle. On july 30, 2001 (mileage 20013) i complained to my dealership that the air bag light was on all the time while driving. They reconnected the wire under the drivers seat stating it was loose, poor fit. On november 15, 2002 (mileage 33164) i complained again that the air bag light was on all the time. They inspected and found two misc. Codesreset and tested, said all is ok at this time. On september 3, 2003 (mileage 41463)i complained that the air bag light was on all the time, again. Dealership tested and said i needed d/d air bag, harness and seat belt replaced at a cost of $675.00. I declined repair and called volkswagen. On november 5, 2003 vw said they would repair this problem free of charge for customer "goodwill". On july 19, 2005 (mileage 61130) i complained that the air bag light was once again on all the time. Dealership repositioned connector for drivers side air bag and stated if it comes on again will need new air bag. On november 20, 2006 (mileage 73661) once again i complained that the air bag light was on all the time while driving. I was told i needed a new drivers seat air bag, harness with rewire to control at a cost of $1040. Once again i called volkswagen and this time i was told sorry, there is nothing they can do to help me. This has been an on going problem with my vehicle and specifically a huge safety issue. Please advise if there is any help you are able to offer.
The contact owned a 2000 volkswagen beetle. While driving approximately 40 mph, the driver fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into a guardrail. The air bags did not deploy. The driver exited the vehicle and walked a few yards away from the vehicle when it suddenly exploded without warning. The driver sustained a minor injury that did not require medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was totaled and was towed to a tow yard. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that nothing could be done. The contact was provided a case number. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000. The vin was not provided.
Consumer stated the air bag light was on, dealer reattached the side air bag harness and found that connector was not attached all the way for side airbag, the airbag light came on again and the dealer replaced the airbag.
Air bag dashboard light lit at 24,635 miles. Repair made by dealer 2/9/05 for $308 labor and $44.76 part (small cable under driver's seat). Text on dealer work order: "found the d/s airbag assm. To have a fault in the connector of harness. Removed seatassm and replaced harness. Seat airbag codes. T/drive to confirm repair."at 35,500 air bag dashboard light has lit again.
When driving at various speeds without warning the air bag warning light would illuminate and would stay lit for the reminder of the time that vehicle was being operated. Dealer has been notified. Vehicle stalled, bucked, all lights on instrument panel lit up. Failure of window switches.
Srs system failure light has illuminated for the third time in 16000 miles.vehicle fault code was reset with the first failure.side airbag was replaced with the second light illumination.system functioned properly for about 8000 miles and has failed again.awaiting resolution from vw as the warranty has expired. One of my employees also purchased a 2002 jetta which had an srs failure in the first two months.there appears to be a design problem with volkswagen's srs system which you may wish to investigate. Mr
Air bag light continuously stays on all the time whileconsumer is driving.consumer has contacteddealer 7 times already, but they are not willing to do anything forconsumer.
While drivingair bag light will come on and will stay on until consumer takes vehicle to dealer. Then, they will repair it. Part had to be replaced four times, but problem still existed. Please provide more information.
The vehicle hit a pot hole and the airbag light illuminated.the vehicle was taken tot he dealer who stated they would fix it so the light would not come on, and stated that the right passenger airbag had a leak in it.consumer was later involved in a front end collision and none of the airbags deployed.*nlm
I have a vw new beetle and the airbag light came on took my car to the dealer and they say it's not their problem and they want to charge 700 dollars to fix it butthe car is expensive.
I bought this car for my grandson to drive to work..the guy i bought it from swore it was in excellent shape, that his daughter drove it to school etc......when we got it, i took it to the volkswagen dealer to make sure it was safe for my grandson to drive, they began to find things wrong and the cost was mounting up and up and they even had us take it home only to take it right back because it had no heat (and its very cold here) so they worked on it some more...bottom line is so far they have charged me 3 times what i paid for it and when i looked it up on line, every thing they did was a recall....my question to you is..how long are the recalls good for and i find it hard to believe the guy was appraised of them or he wouldn't have let his daughter drive it like that ....i have the paperwork right here where it shows 9 recalls and 62 service bulletins...please advise me of my option as i could have bought him a much nicer car for what i have in this!!!thank you so much for your time[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I've had my beetle since 2005, and the airbag lights continuously come on as well as issues with the transmission. I've taken it to vw once for repair, and they come back on months later. I've read similarcomplaints from other vw owners concerning the airbag and transmission. I can't understand why this isn't a recall issue particularly since there was a death in 2007 with another owner. The airbag will not deploy when the light is on. The web page below voices the frustrations of many owners, and i do not understand why these complaints aren't being taken seriously. The repairs cost over $1600. How is this fair when having to get it repaired every year? are you protecting vw? trying to find someone to clear the codes is difficult because they have to go under the seat to adjust wires and using the computer to clear them, but they come back on a day or two later. Why would i have so much trouble trying to get my volkswagen airbag lightfor saferdriving.cannot order the correct parts.
I turn on my car and suddenly the airbag sensor turn on without reason.
Dt:consumer states that the indicator lightfor air bags kept coming on.the vehicle was taken to the dealership to be fixed but light came back on in a couple of days.the consumer stated this problem started soon after he bought the vehicle in 2000 and that it has been happening off and on ever since. The consumer has heard other beetle owners complain of this problem.the consumer believes that the connection under the seat can be disconnected easily or is too easily damaged.
While drivingairbag light suddenly illuminated. Consumer states this is an indication thatairbag may not deploy.
The failure is with the airbag system.does not function when airbag light is on and the diagnosis was a bad panel. I want to know if there is a recall regaurding these panels.
During vehicle collision which resulted in vehicle rollover the airbags experienced no deployment. *mjs
The airbag light came on in 2005. The dealer said the driver's airbag had to be replaced.approximately 1 year later, the light came on again.this time the dealer said they "fixed" it.i don't know what they did.in january 2007, the airbag light came on again.i don't know what to do now.i'm worried that my airbags won't work in a collision because i don't know what the dealer is doing and they can't tell me what the continuing problem is.
The air bag warning light appeared on the dashboard while drivingabout 55 mph on the highway. Cause was undetermined. The light continued to stay on while the vehicle was running.the dealer fixed the vehicle differently each time. (airbag, air bag harness, air bag connector and the instrument cluster)were all replaced. *scc
The air bag light illuminated on the dashboard.
While driving , the air bag light illuminated on the dashboard.
The airbag light illuminated.*nlm
Srs light keeps coming on. Vehicle taken to dealer 6 times, replaced wiring harness once. Other times consumer was told vehicle was repaired, light was off, but came back on after a period of time.
I turned on my car and the airbag light turned on.
Airbag light came on and stays on constantly on a 2000 beetle. There are too many complaints about the problem wiring under the seat causing the airbag light to stay on...this should be the subject of a recall investigation!
Driver's side side impact-airbag deployed for no reason as i was driving down a freeway. Volkswagen theorized that road debris penetrated the floorboard causing the sensor to go off. How thin is the floorboard that a rock or piece of road debris could penetrate it? and why does that throw off the sensor for a side airbag?volkswagen refused to reimburse me for towing, repairs, or my arm injury. *nlm
Air bag sensor light continues to illuminate.dealer states "problem is not a safety issue; " however, consumer was concerned thatair bag would not deploy in case of collision.
I just traded for a 2000 volkswagen beetle diesel for use at my dealership due to the excellent fuel mileage.the air bag light was illuminated when i purchased the vehicle.the previous owner stated the vehicle had been at the local vw dealer and the dealership personell did not mention the light as being a problem.i carried the vehicle to a local service facility for routine service and asked them to determine the reason for the air bag light being on.they reported that the sensor on the passenger side was defective.i carried the vehicle to the dealer in asheville.they reported that the air bag in the passengers side was defective.i authorized them to replace it at a cost of $566.28.i called vw and the lady stated that they could not reimburse me for the repair since i was not a customer of vw. My company is the customer and it purchased the vehicle for company use.the air bag was defective.why should my company have to pay for a defective safety product?
Air bag light stays illuminated, causingconsumer to take vehicle to dealer for the fourth time.problem is not intermittent, light stays on until it is fixed.dealer was notified. Please provide additional information.
While driving the air bag light stay illuminated, dealer notified said spring like contact and wire harness. Please provide any additional information. Ts
I purchased my vw beetle in 2005 with the carfax - no accidents or major repairs. Within months, the engine light and airbag light came on. The windows stopped working.i've probably spent more than what i paid for it. I just spent over $1800 at vw springfield in virginia and the engine light is back on again after only a few months. In addition, the transmission codes were discovered by other repair shops, but they told me i had to go to the dealership for the repair. Neither vw springfield or vw woodbridge ever checked the transmission. In fact, woodbridge told me to trade it in and purchase a new one from them.some kind of light or problem occurs in my car every time i've taken my car to this dealership and vw woodbridge in virginia. They continue to claim that it is a different problem every time with the same components. What is the purpose for diagnostics? every time i take my car to any of the vw dealership, i will have to bring the car in multiple times within months. Something is not right. Hundreds of people are complaining about the same issues, and no one is investigating this. It appears that vw is being protected from selling us poorly made vehicles with hefty repair costs, because it doesn't make since that it's the same problem for hundreds, perhaps thousands of people. Is it that these repairs are major and brake lights aren't. A recall for these vehicles from 99 on should be processed. The fact that vw was in the news recently as selling people cars they knew had engine, airbag, abs, transmission, electrical, and window major problems is astonishing, because nothing is being done. I'm disgusted with volkswagen and they should be held accountable for all this. I understand that the economic situation, but people are in just as much a situation as manufacturing companies. We don't have the money to keep giving away to vw. It's a moral shame.
2000 vw beetle airbag light. My wife's 2000 beetle's air bag light keeps coming on. It has been back to vw service four times to correct the problem. It started well before the warranty ran out. Each time they replace either the driver seat wiring harness or driver seat airbag or both. One time they replaced the controller. It has happened again and again and most recently they replaced the airbag and wiring harness for the fourth time. This took care of the problem for a week and then again the light comes on. Vw has been good to cover these repairs even though the car is now out of warranty but as we see it, the problem has never really been fixed correctly in the first place so it's only right that they keep spending their dollar to get it right. It has been explained to us by vw service that if the light is on, the airbags system will not function in a crash and this causes us great concern. The vw service manager contacted vwoa tech support and they suggested bypassing a wiring connector by running a wire from the controller to the airbag. (sounds like they are grasping at straws). Problem is they want us to pay the $550 to perform this. Vwoa has refused to pay for this procedure. Www.newbeetle.org is littered with air bag problems so it is not just our car that this affects. Please look into these problems and make vw accountable for their air bag systems. Sooner or later someone is going to be killed by their airbag failing to inflate. Thank you.
Airbag light does not go off.now being repaired for the 3rd time. Unable to drive due to safety concerns.
Consumer stated the air bag light was on, dealer reattached the side air bag harness and found that connector was not attached all the way for side airbag, the airbag light came on again and the dealer replaced the airbag.
Airbag system defective, requiring repairs and replacements, including airbag replacements, 11 different times.since system does not work and airbags do not deploy when sensors are on, this is clearly a safety issue.
Consistent problem with air bag light and engine light comimg on/offwhile drivingvehicle at any speed. Dealerinspectedvehicle, and stated that air sensor failed.
1. 2000 vw beetle worked fine.2. One day i started the car up and the airbag light came on.it didn't come on the next time i started it, but it did the time after that and it comes on and stays on now every time i start the car.3. Tried to have a mechanic check it out but they were unable to read the code.i went online and found out that many, many people have this same problem with the airbag light.(according to my research, almost all the beetles have this problem, as the wiring harness under the seats that connects the side airbags to the buckles on the seat belt was made about 3" too short and gets pulled forward or out completely when the seats are brought forward to gain access to the back.)this obviously should be a recall.
2000 volkswagen new beetlerecently my 2000 volkswagen new beetle had the airbag light come on. I scoured the internet to find possible causes and to my amazement, many people suffer from the same problem. It appears that the sensors and wire harnesses in the new beetles frequently fail triggering the airbag light to come on.i was told by an service tech. That when the airbag light is on, the airbags become deactivated, which seems to pose an extremely huge safety concern, seeing as the new beetle suffers many defects regarding the airbags.thankfully, the problem in mine is the driver side airbag wire harness located under the driver seat. The wire length is not sufficient enough to with stand a lot of seat movement. Moving the seats forward too many times can actually cause these wires to break in half, which happened in my case, deactivating all the airbags and bringing up an error in the system.the dealership doesn't make the matter any better, by saying that i will have to pay $600.00 to replace not only the wire harness, but the side airbag as it comes as a complete package and the harness is not sold separately.in this economy, i cannot afford to replace an entire perfectly good airbag for a simple wire, so i am stuck having to drive around knowing that my airbags will not deploy if i get into an accident or possibly deploy prematurely without any cause.i believe that this issue should be looked at, since it not only affects the 2000 model, but all models up to 2006.volkswagen should be held accountable for selling a product designed for occupant safety, that fails before the rest of the vehicle.
The check engine light and air bag light illuminated on the dashboard. *ph
Consumer states that while driving at 55 mph, the driver side door air bag deployed without any warning.contacted dealer. Mrthe consumer also stated that after reviewing the underside of the vehicle, there was slight damage discovered on the left side in the firewall area.the consumer feels that the vehicle was improperly engineered.scc
Air bag light continues to stay on even afterconsumer has takenvehicle intodealer three times already.dealer has tried three times to remedyvehicle, but the problem still occurs.
Airbag malfunction light repeatedly comes on, consumer has taken vehicle into dealership on numerous occasions , the airbag unit has been replaced several times but problem still exists.
The contact owns a 2000 volkswagen beetle. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph the air bag light stayed on. The contact stated that the air bag light came on after driving over a speed bump and if the vehicle was involved in a crash the air bags would not deploy.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer but refused to have a diagnostic test performed due to the cost.the contact stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive.the failure mileage was 60,000.
While driving on a highway at 65 miles per hour, i attempted to turn the cruise control off.it did not go off.then i applied the brakes and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor with no tension.there was no braking action at all.i drove along some grassy areas on the side of the highway to slow the car, turned off the ignition because the car was no decelerating, and hit a tree at about 50 mph.the airbags did not go off.the car was totalled.the car was sold to a junk yard because the repair costs were too high and because the repair facility said they could not determine why the cruise control and brakes failed.
Safety restraint system failure has occurred in this 2000 volkswagen new beetle multiple times. Volkswagen responded by replacing the wiring harness under the driver's seat the first time that the failure occurred but refused to actually correct the engineering issue causing the failure to return. The wiring harness is too short under the seat and feeding to the switch in the seat belt of the driver. The car is now out of warranty and failed yet again. If you will notice, there are many issues with the 2000 new beetle but only 4 recalls of third party lighting products and no actual volkswagen recalls. Volkswagen is being allowed to get away with abuse to the consumer.
While traveling on the highway and without prior warning air bag light appeared on the dashboard. Air bag light will not go off until the vehicle is turned off.
For the fifth time in 10 years, the airbag warning light has come on in my 2000 volkswagen new beetle (less than 50,000 miles and never in a crash).according to manufacturer when the airbag warning light is on the airbags are deactivated providing no protection in the event of a crash.dealer has twice previously replaced driver side airbag harness and recommends doing so again.
Problem: chronic failure of driver's air bag circuitpurchased february 2000. Since july 2004 we have had repeated (eight) repairs done in response to the airbag light illuminating continuously, indicating the air bag circuit is faulty and the air bag won't fire should an accident occur. Despite repeated repairs, twice completely replacing the wiring harness, and once replacing the airbag itself, the airbag light has illuminated again this week and a ninth repair is needed. All repairs have been done and documented by our vw dealer. To date repair costs exceed $1500. The problem continues to occur.
Airbag malfunction light repeatedly comes on, consumer has taken vehicle into dealership on numerous occasions , the airbag unit has been replaced several times but problem still exists.
While traveling at 5 mph another vehicle ran into consumer's vehicle going at speed of 45 mph.upon impact, driver's side air bagdid not deploy. Manufacturer has been contacted.
Air bag fault light on.
Side impact airbags did not deploy during serious accident resulting death. Yh
On the 2000 beetle, you can telescope the driver steering column. Well, the airbag spring coil uncoiled on my car when i telescoped the column and the only way i know this is because the airbag light came on. The dealer and other mechanics are saying the whole airbag needs to be replaced which will cost anywhere from $600 to $800. Now, i don?t feel as if this is a problem i should have to pay for. The vehicle was designed to have the steering column telescope so why would the coil uncoil when i use the feature? also, they have told me that the airbag will not work if something where to happen. Is this something vw should look into and replace for me free of charge?
Airbag short to groundcoolant system short to ground.
Dt*: the contact stated the air bag light on the dashboard illuminated.the vehicle was taken to the service dealer, who determined that the air bag driver inflator module failed.
Air bag fault lights has been coming on and going offfor over a year,,, everytime i get time to go by and get it fixed, it goes off, hooked the computer up and it shows no fault... Now it is on all the time, i was told that it needs to be repaired but at great expense to me,,, however it was not really hurting anything.. I was told that it does not affect the air bag deploying, but i wonder... The only way to find out is have an accident and i do not want to do that, so we , the owners are at the mercy of the vw corporation.
Airbag light came on. Dealer statedairbag sensor needed to be replaced.
While driving at any speedair bag light stayed on.at times the air bag light blinked, but it never went off.the dealer repaired the problem, and informed the consumer that the sensor unit shorted out.*scc
I got in my car one day and the air bag light was on for no apparent reason. No consequences other than it is probably the sensor rather than the air bag that is damaged.it has to be repaired or replaced.not sure if that means the sensor or the air bag as well to be on the safe side.i am driving with the light on.
Cooling system failed causing the original overheating.the car has continued to peridodically overheat since. The car was fully repaired from the first incident and has been in for repair many times since.now there are several failures with the car.
The contact owns a 2000 volkswagen beetle.the contact started the ignition and the "air bag " warning light indicator illuminated on the instrumentpanel. The warning indicator remained illuminated until the engine was turned off.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing.the failure was contributed to thepassenger side wiring harness. The vehicle was repaired for the malfunction.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on eight separate occasions for the identical failures with replacement of the driver side wiring harness.there have been no resolutions.the failure mileage was 12,218.the current mileage was 47,564.
Consumer stated the air bag light was on, dealer reattached the side air bag harness and found that connector was not attached all the way for side airbag, the airbag light came on again and the dealer replaced the airbag.
While traveling at 5 mph another vehicle ran into consumer's vehicle going at speed of 45 mph.upon impact, driver's side air bagdid not deploy. Manufacturer has been contacted.
2000 vw beetle has had 3 airbags installed since 2002.the vehicle has never been in an accident.the airbag light is illuminated again and therefore will not pass the virginia state inspection process..three letters sent to vw with no success. Vw customer care representative will not look into the airbag system on the 2000 vw beetle since the car is out of warranty.the first airbag issue started under warranty. The three airbags replaced to date has been 2 drivers and 1 passenger side airbag. The airbag light has been reset numerous times with no success without replacing an airbag.
Airbag system malfunction:airbag (srs) system warning light illuminated in the instrumental panel, originally on 9/24/2001.vw dealer stated driver's seat side airbag needed replacement due to an internal cause and was replaced on 10/2/2001 at 15365 miles.airbag light illuminated again and system was serviced on 4/8/2003 where vw dealer repaired connection under driver's seat at 36405 miles.recently, airbag light illuminated again and was serviced on 10/13/2008.the driver's seat was removed and dealer repaired connection to driver's seat side airbag at 111370 miles.if this problem were not repaired, the driver's seat side airbag would not have deployed in the event of a side collision.vw dealer stated that numerous vw new beetles have had air bag connection repairs for the driver's seat side airbag.vw dealer stated they put an "extension" on the connecting wire and this problem shouldn't occur again.again, vw dealer stated the air bag system connection under the driver's side front seat appears to be a recurring problem.this concerns me because there is a recurring connection problem with the airbag system, which diminishes the air bag system?s safety and reliability during a collision.vw should recall and repair new beetles with this airbag connection problem so that the airbag system will no longer malfunction due to a faulty wire connection.my local vw dealer stated the problem was remedied with a new ?extension? part and the problem should no longer occur.if i had three malfunctions with my vehicle?s airbag system and my local dealer recognized this is a problem in my area, this may be a widespread, recurring problem among new beetles.vw new beetle owners should be officially notified of this potential safety problem with the airbag system so that the proper repair can be made to the airbag system to ensure the safety of the driver in the event of a side collision.
Consumer stated the air bag light was on, dealer reattached the side air bag harness and found that connector was not attached all the way for side airbag, the airbag light came on again and the dealer replaced the airbag.
Headlights keep going out.i have to replace them about every three months.
We have a 2000 new vw beetle that we bought new in 2000.it has become a high maintenance vehicle that seems to have a lot of defective parts that has to be replaced. Mostly electrical.window once fell inside of door.fog light that has water in them.today a week after taking the car into vw service to repair another thing for around $200.00.i had returned to the shop again because with in a day after car was out of the shop a new problem cropped up.the seat belt light was staying on.i took it into the shop to have the seat belt light repaired.it has been in the shop for most of the day.i just received a call from vw service dept. And was told the seat belt denser was the problem. It controls all the seat belt air bags and some other safety things.it is drivable and seat belt may be ok.i was also told it would cost approximate over $700.00.our vw beetle only has 69,000 miles on it and we have spent thousands of dollars on it for repairs.it over heated last summer and was in the shop for a couple of weeks before they could find what was wrong with it..i think this was the air conditioner compressor and sensors.we have replace may\ny sensors it seem s several times. Most of these repairs was no under a recall.this is a very high maintenance car.it has been in the garagemany times and cost is starting drain us.i am a retired iowa police officer on a fixed income..so this car is a strain on our budget.so many problems..all our vehicles are paid for as well as our home.

Odbi came on was tested indicating cylinder misfire took it for repair was informed two wires were broken and spark plug was severely fouled now there's a compression problem which requires the engine to be torn apart. Cost of repairs exceeds amount vehicle's value and purchase price i have had this vehicle for five months when vehicle was purchased it had a little over 51000 miles on the odometer ran great and the vehicle body is in excellent shape.
Vehicle: 2000 volkswagen new beetle. Instrument cluster failed resulting in a lack of ability to properly gauge speed.also, lost the ability to determine whether fuel level was low.vw dealer's service department advised the cluster needed replacement.the vehicle is 3 years and 1 month old.the warranty period was 24 months or 24,000 miles.the vehicle has 16,000 miles.i contacted vw "customer advocate" (their name, not mine) department and requested their help. I referenced service bulletin number 0103; "some vehicles may experience instrument cluster nonfunctional".after review the "advocate" said they would not do anything in regards to 'goodwill' based on age (1 year out of warranty) and mileage.when i asked about their application of mileage (the vehicle only has 16,000 while warranty is 24,000) the advocate restated the reason for decline, but without mileage.further, the advocate stated that since i was not the original owner, they would not apply goodwill.when i asked what the basis was for ownership discrimination, she indicated the lack of service records.when i, again, indicated that i purchased the vehicle from the original owner three months ago and could provide the prior service records, she said basically "too bad", i could send them a copy, but upon review vw customer advocate would not likely revise their decision.

Check engine light has been on more often than not since 22,000 miles. On 8/28/01 o2 sensor replaced by dealer (#1). On 1/20/03 dealer (#3) told me that engine wiring harness needed to be replaced for an estimated cost to owner of $1306.25. Car brought to nondealer and repaired for $36.00, albeit temporarily. Incidentally dealer had completely run down battery, requiring replacement. On 5/8/03 car brought to dealer (#4) for overheating due to a puncture in oil pan, though owner was not aware of hitting anything. Of course engine light had been on and temperature sensor was replaced at that time. Again incidentally temperature light came on within 5 miles of dealership after oil pan had been "fixed". On 1/15/04 owner is not able to pass emissions testing and therefore not able to renew registration of vehicle because check engine light is on. On that day, vacuum leak was repaired but light returned within 24 hours. On 1/21/04 a hose in air injection system was replaced but light returned within 24 hours. Mechanic has now refused to continue working on the car. Do yourself a favor - never even consider for a moment buying a vw!! this is the worst car that i or anyone i've ever known has owned. Vw service is atrocious as well. They are incompetent, irresponsible and rude to boot. The fact that vw will not provide a rental car, especially when car is still under warrenty and problems occur that have known technical service bulletins, is absolutely unacceptable, particularly in light of all the problems that these cars pose. See additional problems that owner has experienced under "other".
Fire in engine compartment.
I was driving this car and just stalled on an intersection and smoke just came out under the hood and i smelled it too, opened the hood and fuse box had melted which is located on top of battery andfire inside the engine compartment, under the battery has been burning and also melted the wires.
Contact owns a 2000 volkswagen beetle. The contact states since day one of owning his vehicle he has had nothing but problems. The contact was driving at about 35 mph when his dash lights blew out, his power door locks also stopped working. The contact states while his vehicle is parked outside and is not running his alarm would just go off on it's own. The vehicle was under warranty at the time so the contact didn't have to pay as much.the contact states he has spent about 353.00 on miscellaneous, and normal maintenance.there was 5,182 paid on repairs.the contact states he also had a new computer put in the vehicle about 3 years ago. There has been electrical problems back to back and the contact also states the check engine light is still coming on and off. The failure mileage was 1 mile and the current mileage is 58,000. My daughter's car was being driven by my niece on the freeway when the light went on signaling it was over heating so she pulled over to a call box and while she was making the call for assistance she heard a pop pop and the front hood was on fire and a man pulled over and tried to put it out with his extinguisher which didn't work and the whole car went up in flames within a matter of minutes.it was completely burned up which also burned down the call box on the freeway. She had just spent aproximately $1,400 on repairs on the car which was mainly on the cooling system.
The contact owns a 2000 volkswagen beetle. The contact stated the vehicle failed to start normally because the instrument cluster module failed. The fuse box atop the battery melted on 2/18/2009 causing a fire in the engine compartment. Repairs including new fuse box and other damaged parts cost me $1500.00.on 7/15/2011 the fuse box melted causing a/c to stop working. The outside temperature at the time was in the high 90's during a prolonged heat wave in the north east. Cost to repair $400.00.on 5/18/2014 once again the fuse box melted, cost to repair and replace $700. Two days later the repair (5/20/2014) the car went dead in traffic caused by a drained battery cost of towing $150.00 + new fuse box melted.in checking vw owners forums available on the internet, this is a common problem and complaint (fuse box melting) in the vw product line. Why hasn't vw been fined and ordered to recall their defective cars?
We have a 2000 vw beetle with automatic transmission that has some sort of electrical problem that drains the battery if no one drives the car for a few days.we didn't really notice the problem until our daughters both went off to school and no one was driving the car on a regular basis.we are at the point where aaa and amoco motor club will no longer jump the car.we have purchased several batteries in the last 3-4 years or replaced them under warranty to the point where sears told us today to not come back.the vw dealer told us to go someplace else because they couldn't help us and vw itself has nothing to say other than goto the local dealer who told us to call vw.this car hasbeen a problem from the beginning and we have done everything asked of us, expended funds and an inordinate amount of time tono avail.today the vw dealer did say that there was a problem with vw's of this vintage because they hadproblems with cars sitting on the lot and dying.we now need toour daughter to use in chicago, but we can't risk giving it to her and having her come out to the car late at night after work and find that the car is dead.
Electrical surges...blows fuse block...melts down fuse block. Replaced fuse block above the batterythree times since owning the car. Car was being used in the city.
Traveling on the crosstown freeway @ the posted speed, i started to engage the vehicle's heater and the power control switch started to malfunction. I turned the power control knob clockwise and noticed slippage of the control knob. I noticed smoke coming from the whole heater control assembly and then an arch, then a smallflame.
Faulty instrument cluster that effects all electronics of the vehicle. Causes door locks and remotes to not work properly. Causes door warning and seat belt warning chimes to not turn off for a minute after either starting the car or turning on the headlights. May also effect engine immobilizer causing the car to shutdown at any time or place.
The transmission mechanically failed on 3 june 2013.prior to it failing i had taken the vehicle to three different vw repair shop over a four year period, due to the car suddenly downshifting all the way to first gear.the car will drive normally for about 30 minutes, then start having this downshifting issue, i pull over and let the car cool a few minutes then all is normal again for a short period of time.of course with the downshifting the tranny tends to overheat quickly.i wanted to get the oil changed in the tranny, but all repair centers said, "it's a sealed system and never needs and oil change;" also the vw repair techs test drove the car and analyzed it, could find nothing wrong.my experience with vw service on everything is, their mechanics are parts changers only and don't have any real diagnostic capability to find the problem, just replace parts until they fix the problem at the customers expense; i've spent about $10,000 on repairs for a/c, brakes, transmission, etc.finally, the car failed fortunately across the street from a mr. Transmission shop.per mr. Transmission specialist, the tranny failed due to lubrication failure probably from over heating and high mileage; so much for the "never needs an oil change policy."mr. Transmission rebuilt the tranny (out $3400), and state the problem is electrical not the transmission, and vw is famous for electrical issues and always have been. Needless to say mr. Transmission has not been able to find the problem, and they have rebuilt the tranny twice just to make sure the problem is not in the transmission.word to the wise, never buy a vw; i'll never own another one.
I have a 2000 vw beetle. I bought the car used a little more than two years ago. Within a few months of buying the car i started having engine/electrical problems. I took it in........several times, same problem. As i am driving the car it just dies. I can be going 60 mph on the highway or 1 mph pulling to or away from a stop sign. With no warning the car cuts off. It always starts back up, but it will continually die. I lose all power to the car including steering. This is a serious concern and has been for two years and approximately ten times in the vw shop. The car definitely has a problem that no one can seem to fix. I have or my warranty company has repeatedly paid for the same and then some repairs to the vehicle. Some parts (the same part) were replaced within four months of each other. Mostly the shop determines it is the o2 sensors throughout the car (apparently you have several different o2 sensors) or something to do with the turbo (which has also been replaced once or twice now). Those things have been repaired. Some more than once. The car still dies. It gives no warning it just shuts off. Losing power at 70 mph on a crowded interstate can shake one up. I have contacted the dealer, the manufacturer, and everyone in between. No one seems to care or want to help me.someone please help this car is a death trap!
Fuse box on top of battery melted.
Due to electrical systemproblems power windows and door locks intermittently lose operation.emergency warning lights come on,and alarms intermittently sound off.dealer is having a hard time correcting the problem becausecannot duplicate it.
My daughter was driving her 2000 vw beetle saturday when she smelled "something horrible." she rolled the windows down and the next thing she knew there was smoke and flames coming from the dashboard area. She pulled over and a gentleman behind her put the fire out using a fire extinguisher. She had had problems a few days earlier with the ac not coming on properly. She was planning to take the car to the shop on monday.
Consumer states vehicle has a problem with electrical system resulting in the horn, radio and headlights failing intermittenly.
Bought used 2000 volkswagen new beetle for daughter.102k miles.after having it one week, went to start it, battery dead (new battery).noticed that the cosmetic mirror light in driver's side visor would go on even though mirror closed and visor not in use.in looking further, it appears that something in the movement of the car jiggles some loose wiring in the visor, and light remains on without our knowledge.we bought new battery, and have taped visor into secure position when parked.
Consumer states the headlights will burn out without warning while driving.has happened twice over last 2 months.consumer has to replace entire headlight unit.
His complaint consists of a 2000 volkswagen beetle, in which it doesn't apply to any warranty whats so ever.whether it's a new vehicle or not. The problem is with the switchblade programmable type key with remote.volkswagen has known about the problem with these type keys for sometime but has failed the consumers and the government to provide a solution to the problem.they instead take the approach, which profit outweighs the consumers, they put profit before consumers, and safety. These keys produce a ''danger'' to not only the consumers but everyone on the highways around themthe safety and marksmanship of the key can break off during use, so if this happens during a crash, the consumer would be unable to turn off the vehicle which again produces an immediate ''danger''.the remote switchblade key is only secured by a very cheap made plastic. It's very poorly designed and made.if the encasing that holds the key was made out of metal or aluminum this would solve the problem.another problem with the key, is that volkswagen made the key programmable with a chip, so the key has to be cut down the middle, and programmed, which means the vehicle has to be connected to a computer at the dealership and usually takes about one hour at a cost of $245.00.it's very obvious that the manufacture does this for pure profit, and to deter the consumer from going elsewhere to have such key made.i urge nhtsa to take immediate action to eliminate anyone from being injured or killed.these emails will be kept as proof and for the record that this very ''important and safety issue'' has been sent to you as evidence, for future lawsuits etc concerning this matter.happened while driving.
Power windows and power door locks will not operate while i'm driving.took to dealer and they could not diagnose the problem.left it there for 2 days and they still could not find problem.when i stop the car and open the door, then the windows and door locks will operate.when i start driving again, they are "dead" once more and will not open or close.i cannot getthem to operate unless i stop the car and open the door first.when i close the door, they are okay until i start driving again.very dangerous and i can't go through a drive throughbank, etc. Or if i just want to open the windows while i'm driving, i can't.if it starts to rain, i can't close the windows unless i stop the car.
I have a 2000 vw beetle. I bought this car from the dealership with 100,000 miles on it. The first week it began acting crazy and i took it back to the dealership and i was told "sold as is". I have spent $3000 on this car fixing various electrical problems. This car is extremely unsafe. The transmission needs to be recalled immediately! it jumps and jerks at weird times and almost causes someone to rear end me. I've already invested a grand trying to resolve the transmission issue but the car will act fine for the first few days and then the problem will begin again. The third gear always slips and you get whiplash. It feels as if they gear is about to drop out of the car!! the engine misfires on the highway and no problem can be found by my mechanic. He tells me they are just random misfires! that is dangerous going down the highway at 70 mphs and the car shoot down to 50 and jerk on i-40 in winston salem. In the rain, it will jerk even worse, almost like the transmission is jumping out of the hood! my abs lights will flash at weird times as well as my brake light. I have had my brakes checked, not the brakes. Something now stays on in the car that no mechanic can pinpoint which causes the battery to go dead everytime you turn the car off. The gauges tend to not want to work some of the time and the mileage will even stop reading. Sometimes the gas pedal does not connect and will stop accelerating eventhough your pushing on the gas upon take off. The alarm goes off at all times during the day and not for no reason and various times when i crank the car. To top this all off, the fuses on top of my battery caught on fire! i was told by my mechanic that this was a common problem, no problems could be blamed for this event. Someone needs to recall something before someone gets hurt!
Intermittently vehicle will stall out while driving approximately 20-25 mph, battery light will come on. Consumer must restart vehicle. Dealer has replaced fuel pump relay switch and ran test, but defect still occurs.dealer cannot determine cause.consumer states dealer has also replaced the throttle body and vehicle continues to stall.
No summary listed for abov evehicle.
Battery has to be jumped whenever left for 5 days.had tested at 39k but vw service said was fine.progressively got worse until had to be replaced at 45k as would no longer start in mornings.report states faulty battery and replaced with stateline (cannot afford vw battery with all the repairs i'm having to do) at $182.

2000 vw new beetle- diesel:has had recurring problem with the glow-plug system.components have been repeatedly replaced starting 11/2004.service dates include, but not limited to 5/2005, 8/2006, 12/2006, not including separate diagnostics.total charges to date in excess of $1200.00 of this single system.no help from manufacturer or acknowledgemet that a problem even exists.vehicle is located in area (se texas) that would necessitate the use of glow plug only a few days a year.the system is supposed to be designed to activate only below a centian low temperature.it is otherwise a 'static' system with no moving parts that should not be subject to wear and tear.yet, components of this system have regularly failed, causing dashboard warning light.have totally lost confidence in the vehicle, or vw's authorized service providers to rocognize that there is a problem, and provide a solution from the manufacturer's side that is a permanent fix, rather than justreplacing the same parts repeatedly.

2000 vw new beetle ignition swtich - thousands of failures with documented photographic proof of overheated wiring burning through insulation within steering column.fire hazard!my switch went back in the middle of the arizona desert.no headlights, no windshield wipers, no horn, no a/c, no turn signals, no fog lights, no rear defroster. Main concern is no headlights, and risk of fire obviously. Vw of america is aware of the problem across many models, and dealers have warned that cars are 'un-driveable' due to fire risk when problem surfaces. Vwoa refuses to replace or recall switches. Ignition swith requires replacment.
The 2000 volkswagen new beetle ignition switch melted at contact wires in the steering column. The cause was the fog lights undersized wiring to the ignition switch. When it melted the contacts the headlights, turn signals, hvac, and gauges became inoperable, to name a few. It was out of service for two months at my cost and my repair. I could not afford the repair through the dealership and there are no recalls although though conversations with vw mechanics and others this problem was not uncommon. There are still nuances with electrical components in the beetle to this day. I would hope there were no fires or injuries.
I drove an hour away in the rain, parked for 15 minutes, and when i returned the engine would start but i had no use of wipers, heater/blower, or directional signals.since i dared not drive in the rain without wipers, and since it was a sunday, i had to get towed home.it was the ignition switch -- and when they tried to replace it, they found that its receptacle and nearby wires were all melted!vw says tough luck, it's my problem.
Check mill light came on at 41k.had to replace air mass flow meter, airflometer, hose, and install new vacuum valve.also something to do with injection solenoid to the combi valve and a faulty mass airflow sensor.cost me close to $300.
Airbag short to groundcoolant system short to ground.
Volkswagen new-bettle all the electrical system burn down.
While parked vehicle caught on fire. Vehicle was totaled. A pedestrian informed the fire inspector that the flames was noticed coming from the driver's side of the engine.(electrical fire) *sc
While backing out of driveway and without prior warningsmoke was coming from inside of the vehicle vents. Vehicle caught on fire .
While driving at 35mph a fire started under the hood, causing consumer to pull over. Dealer notified.
Srs light keeps coming on. Vehicle taken to dealer 6 times, replaced wiring harness once. Other times consumer was told vehicle was repaired, light was off, but came back on after a period of time.
Vehicle caught fire while on way home from work. Initial symptom was that vehicle lost power while on highway and stalled. Vehicle was able to be restarted. It then was able to be driven approx. 5 miles when it again lost power. It was then able to be restarted. Vehicle was driven to a fuel station when it stalled. Upon restart the instrument panel gages were not operative. It was driven into an amoco gas station when smoke began emanating from under the hood. The intensity of the smoke increased and it was apparent that the car was on fire. I pulled hood opening lever near driver's side kick panel to open hood. I jumped out of vehicle and opened hood. The left front portion of the engine compartment was on fire and flames were readily apparent. The flames were coming from underneath the firewall of the vehicle extending up the wire harness towards the battery. The battery started to melt as well. A passerby in a cube van observed this incident and grabbed a fire extinguisher from his truck and proceeded to contain and extinguish the fire.er.
The power outlets were inoperable, dealer replaced missing fuse.
Fuse block on top of battery melted, fuses not blown.
The power outlets were inoperable, dealer replaced missing fuse.
Consumer noticed dashboard lights flashed while traveling. Vehicle is now on second repair. Dealer can't duplicate problem.
Fan switch would turn off, then started smoking and caught fire, burning the entire dashboard in a matter of minutes.
While driving between 20-40 mph, suddenly the ventilation panel became hot. When the driver attempted to turn the ventilation system on the knob melted.this was followed by smoke coming out the air vent.vehicle was engulfed in flames within minutes of the consumer exiting the vehicle, and calling the fire department. The insurance company and a factory representative inspected the vehicle. The cause of the fire was reportedly due to interior electrical system. The vehicle was totaled.
When jump starting or replacing battery vehicle would run approximately three miles or less before it stalls compeletly out. Vehicle had to be towed todealer shop to reset all of eletrical components, to get the vehicle to run again.if this occurs in a town or city that does not have a volkswagen dealer shop what can one do? *jg
Fuse box on top of battery melted.
I bought a beetle (136k m) from an acquaintance for $1600 cashthere were some issues i.e. The faulty trunk release didnt work, the driver side door had no power, (turns out the door motor is a common issue beetle has) sunroof was stuck part open, and the key fob to the beetle had been worn/broken. (fun fact: without the key fob, access to the trunk, and no power to the driver side door. The stock alarm is very difficult to disable.) we drove the beetle for about a week when the clutch went out. A transmission specialist quoted us $400 for the hydraulic line, after further examination the entire clutch was out (he charged me $1100) the very next day the oil light was blinking, we checked the oil level and it was full.we continued on our businessthe car started losing power, stalling and making a horrible tapping/knocking sound.the engine light started blinking.we werent able to pull codes because the odb was disconnected during the expensive clutch repair.at this point we have invested a great deal of money into this used vehicle,we are hesitant to to take it to the crusher.we bought a haynes repair manual and after some luck, common sense, and trouble shooting we were able to diagnose the car with a faulty camshaft timing chain tension guide.the repair seemed easy enough so we enlisted a our family mechanic to perform the repair.after another $575 we discovered that the tension guide was in fact the problem.we were able to get the vehicle all put back together with several new vital parts.it will not turn over. The manual indicates it may still be out of time or we may have a blown fuse.after i replace the fuses and reattempt installing the timing chain, i will have put 3 x as much money into this car than its worth.i feel like volkwagen is producing lemons and ripping off americans!!!
Engine timing belt prematurely failed at 89,000 mile.vw owners manual supplied with vehicle states that for the 1.8l turbocharged engine, the timing belt did not need to be replaced until 105,000 miles.the failure of the belt caused bent valves.total service bill as a result came to about $4500.loss of power when the belt failed also put my safety at risk as my car was stalled in heavy traffic.
The contact owns a 2000 volkswagen beetle. While driving at a low speed, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. In addition, the brake warning light illuminated even though the emergency brake was disengaged. The check engine warning light also illuminated intermittently. The contact also stated that the low beam head lamps failed to fully illuminate. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
The contact owns a 2000 volkswagen beetle. While driving at 15 mph, there was a loud abnormal noise and the vehicle overheated.the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing belt and the motor mount needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, however the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 115,000.
While driving noticed white smoke behind the vehicle, then all electronics failed but car remained running, pulled to side of the road and engine compartment engulfed in flames.the car was quickly on fire from the dash forward.tried calling vw costumer care and there are no recalls on the vehicle pertaining to fire.after searching online found dozens of similar if not exact incidents.this was my daughters car (17) and carried only liability.only reason for writing is to educate so that others are not facing a life threatning event, as vw denies any wrong doing.

The service rep at university vw reported my car needed a new timing belt and water pump - cost $1,500 (the word warranty was never mentioned, so i never considered this repair might be covered.)another mechanics quote for the same job was $448.during repair he found the timing belt tensioner was defective, so my total cost was $615 - still less than half of the quote by university vw.(i also had to pay university $96 for their rip-off quote.)i contacted vw, who told me to take the part to the dealer for confirmation of defect.defect was confirmed by their lead mechanic. (note that he confirmed defect and not worn out part.i still have all parts.)service manager stated he would file a claim with vw for me.he called on 2/19 and reported my claim was denied.the request was not made to vw, but decided by his regional manager.i called vw about a claim.on 2/20 vw claims called stating my claim was denied.she stated that my claim was denied.she also informed me that the repair would have been covered under warranty - if i had not taken it to another mechanic.i told her i would not have taken it to another mechanic, if i had known it would be covered under warranty!(this was the first time i learned the problem was covered by the warranty!) i told her i wanted to appeal this decision, so whom should i contact?she stated, "i am empowered by the ceo of volkswagen, so there isn't anyone higher.your claim will not be paid."as far as i am concerned, this entire problem was caused by a service consultant not telling me this repair would be (or even, might be) covered under warranty.as a non-mechanical customer, i feel i should have every right to expect that service.if i had been told that, i definitely would have left my car at university vw for the repairs, but i felt i had no choice - either pay $1,500 or $500.
Dt: consumer's car stalled about 6 months ago with mostly deceleration and down shifting.when this occurred vehicle lost power. Every time it stalled and stopped, but always restarted.was taken to dealer twice before, butcurrently a total of 3 times.yesterday at full speed while passing a truck with no indication the car began to decelerate and lost power. When tryingto move into another lane the steering wheel locked.had to be towed to dealer, is currently awaiting an explanation of what makes this happen.
While driving and at a stop vehiclestalled. Consumer would restarted the vehicle.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
My son was driving our 2000 vw beetle on the westbank expressway in new orleans, he heard a loud pop, and the car started to fill with "white smoke", he pulled over immediately, and turned the engine off.within minutes, the car was on fire. This came without warning, we did not have any issues with the car prior to yesterday, 7-17-10.
Consumer states:the engine would shut itself off while driving. Dealership kept 5 days and never recognized problem.
After parking the vehicle, within 15 minute or less the vehicle caught on fire under the hood. The local fire department arrived on location to extinguish the fire. The dealer and the manufacturer were both notified. The cause of the fire was still undetermined.

I'm disgusted with volkswagen and they should be held accountable for all this. I understand that the economic situation, but people are in just as much a situation as manufacturing companies. We don't have the money to keep giving away to vw. It's a moral shame.
2000 turbo engine beetle with 68,700 miles was 'chugging' like a diesel immediately after non-related warranty repair at the dealer.took back to the dealer who quoted $1500 to replace timing belt and water pump.paid $95 for their diagnosis and took the car to my regular mechanic who did the same repair for $450!however, my mechanic told me that the "timing belt tensioner" was defective and caused the belt to wear out.this was an additional $150 cost for that part.i have all the parts from the repair.
While driving engine check light and temperaturelight came on. Then smoke came from under the hood.when this happened, car had to be towed to nearest vw dealer.dealer said that both electric fans needed to be replaced.there was a kink in the wire of one of the fans that caused it to fail.both fans basically melted and blew apart. *ml

2000 volkswagen beetle leaking coolant, defective airflow sensor, check engine light illuminated and problems with window switch. *mr the window had to be operated a certain way in order to operate properly, the check engine light had come on due to a bad airflow sensor in which the problem occurred on two occasions, the coolant light had come on due to the tube that had run from the coolant container to the engine had cut in it and leaked coolant. *scc
The vehiclehesitates, shuts down and will not restart.please furnish additional information. Dealer is aware of the problem.ph
Undercarriage of vehiclewas hard cardboard, when going over a high speed bump it rippedundercarriage off.also in heavy rain, it tears and comes off. Has been repaired 4 times, replaced once. Dealer said it was poor design. The undercarriage came off several times after being replaced.the temperature guage and the a/c had failed.
The contact owns a 2000 volkswagen beetle.while driving 60 mph, the engine lost power.the battery and the ecp warning lights illuminated.the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who diagnosed the failure as the timing belt.the manufacturer will not perform the repair for free.the contact stated that the water pump was replaced at 38,000 miles and 49,000 miles.the timing belt was removed to replace the pump.the purchase date was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 74,000.

Cooling system failed causing the original overheating.the car has continued to peridodically overheat since. The car was fully repaired from the first incident and has been in for repair many times since.now there are several failures with the car.
The a/c quite working while driving, once it was parked it turned cool for a minute or two then went hot again. We took it for a/c check, all was fine for about 5 miles then it went hot again. The next day took it to the dealer, just before we got there the temp gauge came on. The dealer found the water pump, thermostat, and timing belt needed to be replaced due to overheating. The problem is the light didn't come until the damage was already done.

On april 4, 2008, our 2000vw gls beetle caught fire as it was being driven on the interstate.car had been hesitating and the check engine light would come on, so we had it serviced at our local vw dealership on march 28.diagnostics did not find anything wrong.we went ahead as asked for fuel filter and the coolant sensor to be replaced.for the next week, the car continued to hesitate, especially after being driven for more that 20 minutes. We made another appointment with the service department to have it repaired and as my daughter was driving to this appointment she noticed the hesitation again, and about 10 miles later, noticed smoke in the rear view mirror.she pulled off the highway and smoke started pouring inside the car.all of the dashboard lights clicked on, then off.within 2 minutes, the car was completely engulfed in flames.my daughter was able to get out of the car and was not physically harmed.the car was a total loss.
Temperature gauge warning light broke and reservoir tank sensor failed causing vehicle to overheat.nlm
The car overheated and the temperature lights came on. I was able to get the automobile to a service station. The problem was diagnosed as a defective water pump. The mechanic found the blades to the fan lying on the engine. He had to replace the water pump with parts ordered from volkswagen. The mechanic was astonished at the plastic parts used by volkswagen. There was only 60,000 miles on this vehicle.
The dealer replaced the radiator, water pump and thermostat.

Oil pan broke, and dealer replaced oil pan. Vehicle was brought back to dealer for replacement ofoil pump at 13,000 miles andat 14000 miles.dealer stated engine needed to be replaced. Please provide further information.
2.0 aeg motor uses excessive amounts of oil and exhibits piston slap on cold start. Engine uses a quart of oil every 500 miles. I have been told the piston rings have been installed upside down at the factory, which is the reasoning behind the poor oil control. Vw is aware of the problem. Car has been in the family for two out of the last three owners.
While traveling on the highway and without prior warning vehicle will vibrate and stall without no power at all.
The vehicle stalled on several occasions. Previously the battery was replaced, however the stalling continued.
The check engine light and air bag light illuminated on the dashboard. *ph
While driving at 20-30 mph, the vehicle accelerated on its own regardless of braking by the driver. Oil pan failure was found out to be the cause.
Vehicle has experienced several problems with the engine and transmission.consumer was informed that there was an internal problem withautomatic transmission which required thattransmission be replaced.also, dealership has informedconsumer thathead gasket and control valve for the engine were defective.note:dealership has been in possession of the vehicle for approximately 30 days.
While driving and making turns vehiclestalled at various speeds.manufacturer was contacted by consumer.the vehicle also stalled while stopped.the dealer replaced the mass air meter, diverter valve, oxygen sensor and fuel pump relay but the problem persist.the lower engine cover was damaged and the serpentine belt was replaced.
I have a 2000 beetle.bought it used with a extended warranty.the problem started few months after the buying it. The consumption of oil is outrageous. I have to change the oil every 800 miles. I took the car to the dealer, the dealer performed a consumption oil test, and according with their test the consumption of oil was within the standards of a regular consumption. Having to check the oil level every 800 miles is stressful. Few week ago i had to change the spark plug because the car wouldn't start.
Consistent problem with air bag light and engine light comimg on/offwhile drivingvehicle at any speed. Dealerinspectedvehicle, and stated that air sensor failed.
Bolts that hold engine front on right hand side crystalized, heat treatment failed causing engine to come loose.
Excessive oil consumption (1 quart oil every 250 miles!) yet dealer and manufacturer don't want to fix it until we said we would suit if they don't act on it.
Vehicle has stalled 7-8 times at speeds of 55-65 mph. Dealer has replaced o2 sensor 3 times, however that has not remedied the problem.
When it is extremely cold (most of the time the temperature has been below zero) the car will lose power and die.this has happened 4 times.i was going approx. 75 on the interstate passing another vehicle when the car lost power and died.the temp. Was ten below zero.i have been left stranded 4 times with this vehicle in temperatures below zero.thank god for cell phones!!i am worried about this happening on railroad crossings or in heavy traffic.i am currently working with the better business bureau and volkswagen for a refund- just wanted you to be aware of the safety issue with the beetle.
Driving along at highway speed, diesel engine dies, won't restart, towed 5 times.
Vehicle burns 1 quart of oil for every thousand miles. This is normal.consumer feels engine is burning the oil and should not also it may be an emission issue.please provide any further information.
While driving at highway speed with a quarter tank of gas, the vehicle stalled.*scc
Consumer is having problems with the oil consumption in this vehicle. Vehicle has been examined for oil leaks.vehicle runs low on oil every 1000 miles.dealer says this is normal for this type of engine.*jg
During normal operation ofvehicle engine will jump or "buck", increasing the risk of a crash in traffic. Dealership has examinedvehicle and could not identify cause. Please provide any additional information / attachments.
While driving at any speed or any time, vehicle stalled unexpectedly whichcould cause a crash.able to restartvehicle. Been to dealer5 times, and dealer could notdetermine the cause of the problem.

While traveling on the highway, the check engine light illuminates on thedasboard and the vehicle will shutdown.dealership is aware of the problem. *ydconsumer stated the manufacturer replaced the engine which was rebuilt.
Driving on the freeway in construction zone with close cement barriers on both sides, no shoulder;without warning car stopped running.it turned out the timing belt had failed and had destroyed the vavles and pistons requiring a new engine and timing belt to fix.my car had 68,000 miles on it.warranty on timing belt for first owner is to 100,000 miles, but only 50,000 miles for second owner. I am second owner.i am concerned not only about the extraordinary cost that is involved in repairing this failure but also in the fact that there is no warning and it caused complete failure of my engine.it was extrememy dangerous.i have read about other timing belt failures on this vehicle.volkswagen is completely uninterested in my story because i am a second owner.my feeling is this type of failure which is so severe that it requires a new engine is unacceptble and unexpected and unsafe on a car with only 68,000 miles.it used to be a timing belt failure made a car run poorly not get destroyed.
Car has been a problem since first week of ownership.many electrical problems.aaa has seen this car more than i have over the last 2 years.currently at 51,000 miles the timing belt broke causing serious engine damage.vw says it is out of warranty even though i bought a certified vehicle with an extended warranty.whoever heard of a timing belt breaking at 51,000 miles!!!
Driving on a two lane road in an isolated area, limited shoulder; without warning car stopped running. Had to be towed to a service station & then to a dealer.it turned out the timing belt had failed and had destroyed the vavles and pistons requiring a new engine to fix. My car had 99,000 miles on it. Warranty on timing belt for first owner is to 100,000 miles.vw service recommendations say the timing belt should be replaced at 105,000 miles for year 2000 models.i am concerned not only about the extraordinary cost that is involved in repairing this failure but also in the fact that there is no warning and it caused complete failure of my engine.i have read about other timing belt failures on this vehicle. Dealer asked for and was supplied invoices for every repair and oil change but repair under the warranty was denied because i did not have the vehicle serviced by a dealer at 60,000 & 80,000 miles.i called the 800 number for vw but volkswagen was completely uninterested in my story.the only time the issue of checking the timing belt was mentioned to me was after it broke!even when i had other service performed at 88,000 miles by the dealer.my feeling is this type of failure which is so severe that it requires a new engine is unacceptble and unexpected.i have owned other cars of a different make that had well over 100,000 miles with little or no problems.why would vw recommend replacing the timing belt at 100,000 miles if there is a probability that it may not even make it that far?what use is a 100,000 mile power train warranty if there are so many loop holes that vw does not expect to have to honor the warranty?
I recently purchased a 2000 vw new beetle on october 10, 2007. My significant other drove the car to work. When she got ready to leave the car would not start. She called a mechanic and they checkedthe vehicle. They determined that the timing belt had broken. The car has less than 90,000 miles on it. I went a researched and found other similar complaints about low mileage beetles of this year having the same problem. I am concerned that such an expensive repair is required at such low mileage in order to own this vehicle and have it operate properly. I am not the original owner so i realize that this repair is not covered for me. There should be some form of disclaimer placed on this year of beetle so that perspective owners will know that they have an expensive repair coming up (timing belt) if it hasn't been corrected already.

Volkswagen new beetle 2000 1.8 turbo (engine type: aph) has engine stalling problem, which haven't been fixed by volkswagen dealer by 7 or 8 times. It's very dangerous to the driver.my bumper-to-bumper warranty would be expired on june 30th, 2005, which is one month left. But the volkswagen of american still refuse to pay for the future diagnose fee for the same issue.
To make this short this link tells the whole story in detail about what has been going on with my car. Http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1941470currently my car is stalling randomly almost every time i drive it. Vw of america tells me to take it up with my local dealership service dept. Which i have been for 2 years. The dealership keeps giving it back to me unfixed but still replacing parts!the dangerous part of this is the steering locks up when the car dies and i'ts still moving. I am fearful of driving it and i haven't gotten anywhere with vw.if you go to the link above and read the thread you will see that i am not alone and that it seems to be the same particular year and engine as mine in most replies. Please contact me if more details or information is needed. I would like to help find a solution before any serious accidents happen or anyone is hurt. Thank you, dave werbeck

Vw catalytic converter warranty extension. Was 8 years/80k miles. Extended to 10 years/120k miles. I have a 2000 vw new beetle gls, which i purchased new in 1999. My model is currently covered under this extended warranty. My car is not passing smog - gross polluter status. Only has 73,000 miles on it.the issue: because the cat converter is not formally listed as a "recall" by vw america, the dealership wants to run a diagnostic (even though i'm providing the detailed paperwork from my smog station), and when the check engine light comes on, they want me to repair any and all issues that arise at a cost to me, before they will replace my catalytic converter under warranty.the problem with this is, the check engine light covers numerous issues the car may be having, including some that may not be related to the car not passing smog. And the check engine light is always on. Dealership turns it off - comes right back on within days. I want the catalytic converter replaced first, then see if it passes smog, then i will repair any other problems. I don't want to put money into problems possibly unrelated to smog, if the catalytic converter won't fix the issue. But per the vw dealership, i cannot proceed without spending money on supposed other problems, because the cat converter was not technically labeled a recall.i wrote the epa - the email i received back from them said they consider it a recall, but because vw america did not send out a formal recall notice on the cat converter, and instead just provided an extended warranty, there's not much that can be done. Dealerships can require a diagnostics runand ask you to pay to fix other problems prior to fixing the cat converter.vw extended the warranty, so clearly they are aware there is a consistent problem. They should just call it a formal recall (since the epa does), fix the problem they know exists.currently, i've brought to another dealership. Same issue. Don't have any other choice.

While driving on the highway my car suddenly began making a loud, horrendous noise.i pulled over to the side and looked at the muffler,it appeared intact.i drove slowly to a service station where they told me that the pipe of the exhaust system that leads to the catalytic converter had detached.they told me the pipe was stainless steel and they were not even sure how it had ever attached.they called volkswagen to ask what could be done.the people at volkswagen wanted to know what year the car was and the mileage, 61,000 miles.after a hesitation they told the man at the service station that it would cost $800 - $900 for a new system.the man at the service station did an emergency weld, although he didn't think that it would hold.he also told me that he saw no damage under the car that would have caused this pipe to detach.he also said he was suspicious of the manner in which the volkswagen representative had questioned him about the year and mileage and suggested i contact volkswagen myself.i called volkswagen and was told that the warranty on the catalytic converter on that model had been extended to 80,000 miles or 8 years.i explained that i wasn't sure if it was the converter but it was the pipe leading to it, i was assured that it was probably covered.i took my car to pitcairn volkswagen in langhorne, pa.the people at the dealership told me that they contacted volkswagen directly and showed them pictures of the undercarriage of my car.it was determined that i had caused the damage.when i argued that there was no damage, i was told it was not covered because i had the emergency weld done.they agreed to reinforce the weld but that was all.
Cooling system failed causing the original overheating.the car has continued to peridodically overheat since. The car was fully repaired from the first incident and has been in for repair many times since.now there are several failures with the car.

I was using the vehicle jack to raise the left rear wheel off the ground to change the tire.the car was on a flat concrete garage floor.the jack failed and the rear of the vehicle swung toward me.the jack should not have failed.i can see that the jack is not made very well.the vehicle could have easily fallen on top of me and seriously injured or killed me. I checked to see if there is a safety recall on these vehicle jacks; but, i could not find one.these jacks pose a serious safety risk.i would like for vw to replace my jack with one that is safe and will not fail like this one did.i have the jack available for inspection.
Brake light.
The front lights on both sides go out without warning. I change out the bulbs and they work intermittently.as i was driving over colima road toward whittier, ca on the way home, one light went out and then the other. Colima rd is an unlit road. I don't drive at night. I have spent over 150.00 on mechanics trying to get it fixed. I read on the internet that many are having the same problem.this item should be investigated, and in my opinion should be recalled by the manufacture.

The failure mileage was unknown.
Consumer stated the rear brake light bulb failed, also the rear brake light is located in place that is hard to get to, the dealer stated it took 45 minutes to remove the inside panelling and 2 seconds to change the bulb.
I received a recall notice in 2003 that my 2000 volkswagen beetle had a problem with the brake light switch including the brake lights staying on indefinitely.i took the car to bill jacobs volkswagen naperville, il and had it inspected.in june 2005 my brake lights came on and would not shut off.i took the car back to bill jacobs and after some disagreement over the recall being closed they replaced the brake light switch for free.in june 2006, just under a year, my brake lights again came on and would not shut off.i took the car to an independent auto shop and they replaced the brake light switch once again.volkswagen is refusing to reimburse the invoice to date since there is no open recall even though the part was not quite a year old.i am deeply concerned with the safety issue that this brake light switch malfunction raises.my lights could stop working or stay on with no notice and i drive in heavy traffic in the chicagoland area.i noticed on your web site that there have been 9 other complaints filed since the recall that identify this problem.
- the contact called regarding a 2000 volkswagen beetle.the contact stated that he received arecall letter for the brake light switch.the contact had already had the repair done when the recall letter was received.the contact went through the reimbursement process with volkswagen and received a check for $67.59.the contact paid a total of $224.46.the contact called volkswagen to see why he received this amount, and was told that was all they were willing to pay.
Recently i brought my niece's vw 2000 new beetle to the vw dealer to have the brake light switch replaced. It was clearly evident from information available on the web and the recall notice below that the vehicle was experiencing the same problem described in the recall.however the dealer indicated the vin for my niece's vehicle was not included in the recall and therefore not covered by vw. We had it fixed anyway at our cost and it was exactly what is indicated in the recall. Later i contacted vw customer service in the us and they discussed the matter with the dealer and confirmed they would not cover the service cost for replacement of the brake switch. Surprisingly the customer service rep at vw knew very little about the recall and could not access readily available information on the web to understand it. The vin for our vehicle is [xxx]...vw should be forced to expand the recall to all vehicles, since it is clear the problem exist wth many other vehicles beyond those included as part of the original recall and this is a significant safety hazard.*make : volkswagen model : new beetle year : 2000 manufacturer : volkswagen of america, inc nhtsa campaign id number : 03v265000mfg's report date : jul 25, 2003 component: exterior lighting:brake lights:switch potential number of units affected : 295136 summary:on certain passenger vehicles, the brake lamp switch may malfunction. 03v265000/exterior brake light switch. The consumer took the vehicle into the dealer to have the recall service work done. The consumer was not having any problems with the brakes or the brake light. Now, consumer has difficulty changing gears when pressing on the brake pedal.the consumer experienced problems going from park to drive or from park to reverse. The vehicle left the consumer stranded. The epc light illuminated and after several moments, the vehicle began to operate normally.the consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer who informed the him that the problem with the vehicle was the brake light switch. Because the brake light switch was previously replaced during the recall, the vehicle was 27 days past the 12 month 12,000 miles replacement parts warranty.provide further details.
Consumer stated while driving, the epc indicator light illuminated, the dealer stated the switch was defective and a new brake switch was installed, however when consumer received the vehicle back and proceeded to drive, she noticed that it felt different, it felt tight, consumer soon discovered that the brakes had froze and would not move, the vehicle was towed to the dealership in which they discovered that the new brake switch that was installed had caused the brakes to lock up and had to be replaced again.

I have a 2000 volkswagen beetle and its right head light has gone out and i have noticed that a lot of volkswagens right headlight is out as well not just on bettles but also its other models. Just wondering if there is a defect in there light assembly.
Failed headlight cannot be replaced by owner because of the difficulty of removing front car panel.the only dealer within 30 minute drive cannot work on the car within the next 5 days, resulting in car having to be driven without headlight.suggest dealers make exceptions for working on cars in need of a headlight, since it's a core piece of safety equipment and that consumers be made aware of the design problem before buying this car because of both the time and expense involved in a piece of equipment that is subject to failure at any time.
Was wondering if there is a problem/recall with the new vw beatle. I have a 2000 and i have had to replace the headlights 4-5 times within a year or so. Also i see alot of them on thge highway with one headlight out. Do you have any information inreference to this issue.
Since new, in the past (4) years, i have had to replace the drivers side headlamp bulb (5) times and the pass. Side headlamp bulb (4) times (daytime running and low beam). Now, the daytime running and low beam lights do no function at all!i cannot find any blown fuses or circuit breakers and after reviewing several vw owner support sites, i'm told it is a problem with the wiring harness do to corrosion from the windshield washer bottle spillage. The only way to drive the car at night or dusk is by using the high beam lamps. There is obviously something wrong with the wiring or electrical system on this car, 2000 vw beetle with the 1.8 turbo engine.
2000 volkswagen beetle passenger side headlight fell out onto the roadway. Upon inspection mechanic determined the plastic piece holding the headlight broke and needed to be replaced. Consumer would like reimbursement for the repairs to the vehicle.
Vehicle uses diesel fuel.thereforewater infuel freezes in fuel filter line, causing vehicle to stop.
Consumer stated the malfunction indicator light was on, the dealer stated there was a defective change over valve which was replaced.
Fuel filterline is located too close tofuel clip that has caused a hole to develop infuel line. Consumer has noticed there was no leak at the present time. Consumer has yet to contact the dealer. Please provide any further details.
I do not know if this classifies as a problem but i want to bring it to your attention.i own a 2000 vw bettle that my daughter drives.recently, during her trip to work, the car started sputtering and would not go beyond 10 mph.i noticed that the problem was very similar to my 1982 fiat spyder which had a defective airflow meter.after checking with the local dealer, it turned out to be the same problem.i found out that they have been having this problem on almost all their models including mercedes benz cars.the price of this airflow meter was around $ 60.00 which made me more suspicious since i paid well over $400 for the one on my fiat. Come to find out that the dealership had over 20 on backorder during the time i purchased mine and i had to wait over two weeks to get it.if this airflow meters fails during travel on the interstate, it could potentially cause a major accident because the car will slow down considerably in hi-speed traffic.the manufacturer of this component is bosch and according to service personnel, the cost of the airflow meter was in excess of $250 but they dropped the price due to the high number of failures.i questioned why this was never addressed on a recall for the vehicles, at which time the technicians just stopped talking to me.*la
After discovering that fuel was leaking from the bottom of the vehicle. Vehicle was towed to a dealership, where the fuel tank was found to be busted. The fuel tank was replaced at owner's expense. Possible gas line leak. Hasn't been officially determined..but dealership officials are saying that was the cause of a fire in the engine.driving on freeway when engine burst into flames.
Driver's side door opened while leaving parking space. Door had been shut properly before taking off. Door latch malfunctioned allowing door to swing open. Luckily no one was injured as speed was less than 5 miles per hour, but had this occurred on the roadway, i would not want to think of what may have happened. The door latch will need to be replaced.
We bought the car everything was fine. Two weeks later the engine light comes on and now the transmission takes off in second gear and will not shift till gets up to 40 mph.after checking on line it seems volkswagen is having issues with the transmissions and doing anything about it.
I just bought a 2000 volkswagen new beetle, and my transmission is slipping i have taken this vehicle to more than one location including the volkswagen dealership and everyone is telling me the code read gear ratio incorrect. My car is very dangerous for me too drive the dealership told methat the transmission i need is 5000 and there is no warranty that they could offer me. I just bought this car i don't have 5000 for a new transmission and i have done my research about this situation and everyone is saying the same exact thing im complaining about how fast beetles transmission go out and half of them took there beetle to volkswagen just for them to tell them they need 5000 to 7000 transmission and later find out that was jot even the problem and the car is still driving very reckless. I'm putting my life n danger every time i drive the cari have two jobs and i cant afford to miss one day. So u tell me miss days from work because i don't have safe transportation or drive the car i have n rest my life everyday. I need someone to hear me out and help me with this situation. I'm sorry to say i will keep complaining intel someone gets to bottom of this.
Transmission failure- vehicle down shifted hard and would not come out of 1st gear during heavy traffic on highway almost causing rear end collision. After turning car off and turning vehicle back on it proceeded for about 5 miles before doing the same. Car was towed and transmission was rebuilt but the car continues to do the same. Recently traveling on highway during rush hour, slowing down for traffic that was at a stand stillthe vehicle downshifted hard causing the car behind me to slam on his brakes causing an accident behind me.
2000 new beetle with its second transmission. I thought these were reliable cars that would be reliable for back and forth to work.. I looks at the forums and find im one of the thousands that has had the same issue. Is this acceptable?
Vehicle has experienced several problems with the engine and transmission.consumer was informed that there was an internal problem withautomatic transmission which required thattransmission be replaced.also, dealership has informedconsumer thathead gasket and control valve for the engine were defective.note:dealership has been in possession of the vehicle for approximately 30 days.

I am having transmission problems on my 2000 beetle. I was told the transmission does not need replaced but i feel otherwise. When i am driving my vehicle will pull back very hard and then jump and shoot me forward. I am afraid that this will cause a bad accident.
Consumer stated that vehicle got stuck in park, and would not move. Consumer called the dealer, and they told her that she needed to take her vehicle to a volkswagen dealer.consumerjust bought the vehicle in january 2004, and did not take it to a repair shop.however, consumer felt there was a transmission problem.
I received a recall about my back or break light. Made an apt. With heritage vw in georgia. I drove from leesburg al. To the dealership. They change the light and told me a belt has to be replaced. I know nothing needs replacement because my son ( a mechanic ) does all the maintenance in my vw. I told the them i will talk to my son and will get back with them. I had a hard time staring the car, but did not pay any attention because i was in a hurry to get out of there. I was on hwy 20 when every thing went crazy with my car. Lost my cruise control, lost power, won't start. So i called heritage and ask what they did with the car. They want me to bring it back to them, knowing it can't be driven. I feel they sabotage my car, they messed up my car so much, i paid over $3000.00 for it to work. I kept the receipt just in case i might need it as proof.i received another recall last week it's hard to get burnt twice in a row.
Transmission failure on a 2000 vw beetle at 60,000 miles.
While driving transmission will get stuck without a prior warning.sometimes will switch into neutral.vehicle will had to be towed.please provide more information.
Enginechecklight came on.called dealer, and they said it was normal, it would go off. Car was still stalling, andengine check light came back on. Then, a couple of days later vehicle would not start.vehicle towed in.after picking upcar for repairs it stalled again. Consumer stated there was a transmission noise.
Dt: the contact states the gear shift will not move from the park position. Due to the design the braking systemis not equipped with any override feature that would allow the disengagementof the shift position. The dealer is willing to offer a free remedy however, they will not provide the towing service. Therefore, no repairs have been made.

Cable has completely severed on driver's seat belt receptor.this is not the result of an accident but just due to use as intended.issue was discovered on examination on 7 november 2014.informed volkswagen of america who declined to repair the problem despite safety implications.informal communication with dealer service department is that the issue was caused because a plastic sleeve around the two cables at the latching mechanism had slipped down the cable allowing the cable to bend back and forth, eventually causing stress failure.
The steel cable securing the driver side seat belt buckle to the seat cage broke leaving me unprotected in the vehicle. This is a serious safety issue common to the vw new beetle and cited by owners across model years. Also, the manufacturer complicates what would be an easy fix by attaching the part to the seat cage with fasteners that cannot be removed without a proprietary tool. It's like strong-arm robbery!
I turned on my car and the airbag light turned on.
Passenger seat makes noise, and drivers seat gets stuck at times, dealer replaced the seat frame and seat rail cover/trim.

Hed rest is 6 inches too high to fit driver's head properly. This causes poor visibility for driver out of rear window. Had contacted manufacturer. Has no plans to convert headrest.
The dealer admits that they are unable to fix the front driver seat.the heated option on the seat is inoperable and after a reasonable number of attempts the option is still not functioning.i am goin to arbitration to have vw purchase the vehicle back on 02/15/01.the dealer said that there are similar problems on all beetles with these seats yet no tech bulletin has been put out as of yet.this car is a lemon and i am getting nowhere.

The contact owns a 2000 volkswagen beetle. While driving 55 mph, smoke appeared from the rear of the vehicle and the abs warning indicator illuminated. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road. The contact noticed smoke coming from the rear driver's side area by the tire along with an abnormal odor. The contact stated that the odor smelled like coolant. The contact waited a few minutes and was able to drive the vehicle; however, the failure recurred when the vehicle accelerated between 40 and 60 mph. Abs and brake warning light started flashing a beeping while car still had more than 50% of original brakes left.no act or event seems to have precipitated the problem.dealer service department believes that the abs pump is malfunctioning.regular application of brakes is unaffected.unknown whether application of abs system would cause brake failure.

I own a 2000 vw new beetle. The vehicle currently has 38,000 miles on the odometer. Within the last month, 2 instrument lights come after the car has started and reaches a speed of 15 mph. The 2 lights that come on have to do with the abs braking system malfunctioning.i took the car to my local vw repair shop, they hooked up a tester to the vehicles computer, the computer fault said that the abs hydraulic pump was out of tolerance.when i took the car to the local vw dealer and explained to them the fault, they told me that it would be approx. $1000.00 to remove and replace the pump. $300.00 labor, $700.00 for the part.while talking to the mechanic at the dealer, he told me that he has seen this problem quite often, not only the beetle, but on other vw models.i do not know how many other complaints you might have had for this problem, but i think that vw of america should be made aware of it. At this time, i have not had the repair done. I am hoping that you may be able to get vw to look into this issue and resolve it.

2000 volkswagen new beetle. Abs and brake light and oil lights come on. Brakes fill like they're applying left then right. Beeper going off. Researched and found that many other owners of vw and audi's are having this problem and wind up having to pay $1300 to $1900.00 for a new abs controller unit. This could have caused my wife to have an accident and vw should be liable to replace these defective units from these many cars that they made.
This is a quote from the police report (full copy available on request) "driver and only occupant butler stated he entered the parking lot and put the manual transmission of the veh. Into neutral and coasted into the parking space, but then he applied the brakes of the veh. They didn't work, causing front of veh. To jump over the approx. 6" high curb and come to rest hanging over edge of the river wall.butler reported he has had the lease veh. For approx. 3 years and has had numerous problems with it, but never any problems with the brakes""an unidentified male was sitting on the back of the veh. To keep it from tipping into the water" "butler was not injured but he didn't want to exit the veh. As he reported it was teetering back and forth before the male sat on the back end"on reporting the above to volkswagen, their official responce that i found insulting was that it was "operator error".i have been driving stick shift vehicle for 12 years and never mistaken the clutch with the brake, and after reluctantly taking back the beetle i went to an empty parking lot to see if it was possible for me to depress the clutch by mistake and found that my right foot would not easily reach the pedal and therefore beyond any doubt dismiss the claim of "operator error".since there was no personal injury and minimal vehicle damage it is not financially viable for me to take legal proceeding, although 4 months after the incident i still have flashbacks and bad dreams of the near fatal event.nlm

Brake and gas pedal are very close together.when wearing workshoes there is the possibility of stepping on the brake in an emergency situation, depressing the brake pedal and pushing the gas pedal at the same time because the brake pedal depresses beyond the height of the gas pedal. Problem with the 'engine check light'. First came on at about 3k miles. Dealer spent four hours and made a comment about the fault code being associated with the idle speed (yeah right). *ml

The consumer states when applying the brake pedal the vehicle accelerates without warning. No impact reported. Please provide additional information.
When driver's foot is onbrake all of a suddenvehicle will accelerate. Vehicle has to be slammed into park in order to stop.
2000 new beetle with its second transmission. I thought these were reliable cars that would be reliable for back and forth to work.. I looks at the forums and find im one of the thousands that has had the same issue. Is this acceptable?
While driving on service road stopped for a red light, lifted foot off the brakes and vehicle accelerated on its own.contacted the dealer, and he was not able to help.
Dt*:the contact stated while attempting to stop at 20 mph, the throttle stuck and the vehicle accelerated.the contact applied the brakes and put the vehicle in neutral.while in neutral the accelerator pedal was tapped and the rpm's returned to normal.the vehicle has not been inspected by a mechanic.
While driving at 20-30 mph, the vehicle accelerated on its own regardless of braking by the driver. Oil pan failure was found out to be the cause.
Brake and gas pedal are very close together.when wearing workshoes there is the possibility of stepping on the brake in an emergency situation, depressing the brake pedal and pushing the gas pedal at the same time because the brake pedal depresses beyond the height of the gas pedal. Consumer request that dealer install a kill switch on accelerator to rectify the problem.
Consumer stated when accelerating, there is a noise in front middle vents, dealer repositioned throttle cable.

Problem with the 'engine check light'. First came on at about 3k miles. Dealer spent four hours and made a comment about the fault code being associated with the idle speed (yeah right). They fooled with it , reset the computer and sent me away. Now it's back on again. I have noticed that the light goes out but then re-appears again. It's back to the dealer again. If anyone has an absolute solution, i'd love to know so i can tell the dealer what to look for.
During cruise control operation, cruise control disengages, then reengages when vehicle strikes a ridge or hole in the road. On one occasion, the cruise control failed to reengage when passing through casual water on the highway.
When accelerating nothing happensat an intersection.consumer feels it is very dangerous.
The contact owns a 2000 volkswagen new beetle.the contact noticed that whenever he attempted to make a left or right turn the blind spot on the vehicle distorts his view of the vehicle in front of him. The windows in my 2000 volkswagen beetle will not let up or down.i think that there should be a recall on these volkswagens because it causes a major inconvenience at fast food restaurants and everyday life.think about it if i was in the crash i would be further injured if they had to break a window t get me out.
Turning on heater in window mode will cause windows to fog up in any weather any outside temperature. A search of the internet shows i am not the only 1 with my type of vehicle having this issue.a smell comes into the car that can't be good for your health.
- the contact called regarding the 2000 volkswagen beetle.the contact turned on the heater and it would not turn on. The heater eventually turned on, the blower stopped ,and flames started coming from the heater vents.the failure mileage was75,800.the fire was put out with a fire extinguisher.there were no injuries.the vehicle was towed to a repair shop.the repair shop diagnosed the problem as a faulty heater/air conditioner control switch. The contact contacted the manufacturer and they will not do anything.the vehicle was being repaired at a non volkswagen repair shop.
Heater switch problems. First it won't turn off the fan, then it won't turn on the fan, and it smelled of cooked wires inside dashboard.
I was driving onhighway, 10 miles south of providence, ri on i-95. It was 82 degrees and sunny. I hada/c on. Suddenlyrear window, for no explainble reason, exploded outwards. There was a loud "boom" and the window shattered in thousands of
My husband was installing the baby seat into the back seat of our car in preparation for bringing our newborn son from the hospital on a cold rainy evening.when he turned the rear-window defogger on.the rear window of the car exploded into small fragments of flying shrapnel which spattered all over the back seat and baby seat.my husband sustained minor cuts on his hands and head.if this had happened the next day, when we were to bring my son home.he might have been blinded and badly lacerated or much worse.the entire back of the car was soaked due to the driving rain.before my husband got the car into a garage, significant water damage was done to the entire back passenger compartment.i contacted vw to pay for our deductible and reimburse us for the water damage, and their only answer was that the vehicle is out of warrantee and that they will not help us.i mentioned the seriousness of the injuries which could have happened had my son been in his rear facing baby seat when the glass shattered.they weren't even interested in taking the information down.the customer service agent, a mr. Brandon curtis, seemed willing to help, but it seems his supervisor overruled him.i hope we can find a way to get vw to pay for our expenses, but even more importantly, it is vital to make sure this never happens to anyone while there is a child or infant on that back seat.dt
Clutch failed on a steep hill while waiting for a light to change.the clutch burnt out when the driver attempted to avoid oncoming, uphill, rush hour traffic.$1,800 repair costs.volkswagon refuses to replace part past the 12,000 mile warantee despite the driver's 18 year, problem-free, clutch driving experience with 2 volkswagons and 2 hondas.horn just died.electric windows do not follow owner manual description of operation!
May 2001 was the first time that a window (drivers) felt thruough door cavity on my vehicle.the dealer repaired and that was it.the next month the passenger window had the same luck and this time the service advisors at the dealer (camelback volkswagen at phoneix, az) commented that this was fairly common on the volkswagens, and now that both of my systems where repaired i did not have to worry anymore.i was upset and asked how come there was no recall and they said that vw did not considered a safety issue once the window falls you have no way to lock the car unless you take it to the dealer for service!!on july 29, 2002 my previoulsly repaired window felt into the doors cavity one more time.i called the dealer and asked for an explanation and i was told that the installed part was not working properly and that a new part was designed and being installed on broken vehicles.this time i called volkswagen and demanded that both of my windows systems where to be repaired at the same time with the newly design part, and asked why there is not a recall on this matter and they claimed that there is not a significant amount of cases.well the dealer tells me that they are dealing with 10-15 cases a day and they do not even have the part in stock., it is on back order and they can only prop the window and leave unmobile until the parts arrive.in the meantime vw refuses to replace the other part on the drivers side until it fails, even when they know that the installed part is failing constantly at least in the state of arizona.
We own a 2000 volkswagen beetle...in 2008 the water pump went in it...had that replaced and 4 weeks later had to have it replaced again then the following year 2009 the window motors in both windows went..had to have those replaced... The headlights and tail lights are falling out have to constantly push them back in....now 2011 the water pump went in it again..now the car is sitting in the drive way acting as a paper weight..had i know that there were so many issues with this type of vehicle i would have never bought one..i hope that volkswagen is happy raking people over the coals by selling them nothing but junk and god forbid if you have to take it to a dealer they want everything up to and including your first born child...

The clips on the interior part of the sun shade that prevents blinding sun from coming tough the sunroof bent.it makes it hard to open or close the shade when driving without great force something that is not very safe to be doing when driving.the person that fixed the sunroof also sayed he wish's they would recall the clip because he has fixed many with the same problem. The clips just bend and jump of the track they need to slide in.we think the metal used for the clips need to bestronger or revised.( dot number: m3wc tire size: 205/55r16 )
