The driver's side rear air bag caught fire while the vehicle was parked in our driveway and not being used. The passenger compartment was completely destroyed from fire damage, smoke and soot. The vehicle has been totaled by our insurance company. The vehicle had approximately 76,000 miles and was otherwise in perfect condition.

Air bag light on, toyota found dtc s b1785 occupant classification sensor front left collision detection, b1650 occupant system malfunction, zero point calibration and sensitivity check done but toyota hawaii says we need to replace front right seat sensor mat assy. Is that a safety issue and is this a manufacture defect? took to toyota 3 times now for the same issue of the air bag light coming on. Please advise, thank you! both lens bulbs melt inner side of plastic parts on the headlights. Please advise if this is also a recall/defect.

Takata recall. I was notified about the takata recall and when i call toyota. I was told that i would be notified when i could get it replaced. I was never notified! i heard that there were so many to be replaced. That it would be some time before it would be replaced. Toyota motor company never contacted me. I need a replacement. I bought this tacoma in texas i am now living near cleveland ohio now. As of this date 9/17/2019 i have less than 30,000 original miles.please help me get this fixed! my phone # is [xxx] . My name is [xxx]. Address is [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the srs light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v092000 (air bags). The failure mileage was approximately 82,000. The radio acts erratically and unpredictably.it changes stations, turns itself off and on, etc.sometimes the controls, such as the volume, are non-responsive, so the radio cannot be turned down or off when needed.since fiddling with the radio usually makes it eventually start working again, it is a distraction hazard.i have drifted over the yellow line trying to get it working again.the dealer has acknowledged the defect but refused to repair it.it is an ongoing problem.the dealer said it is a very common problem but toyota will not provide replacement parts.i believe few people report it because the radio is not seen as a safety issue, but it is a serious distraction. The consumer stated the air bag light has been on for two years. Also, one of the leaf springs had broken in half.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. In october 2009 while he was driving approximately 15 mph he lost control of the vehicle crash into a wall and the driver frontal air bag did not deploy. He didn't receive any injuries. The police report number is 9-13-02205886. On december 17, 2009 while driving approximately 15 mph the side air bag deployed without warning. He was not involved in an collision on that date. The has been diagnosing the vehicle since december 17, 2009. The dealer stated the air bag is not covered under the warranty. The estimated cost for repair was $6,000.he will contact the manufacturer. The current and the failure mileage were 7,300.updated 02/17/10. *lj updated 02/18/10

I have exactly the same problem with read leaf springs as everybody else- the rear is sagging and and the front end is starting to rise(excessive tire wear)my truck has 66,000 miles and it only carries a 210lb vintage dirtbike 5 or 6 times a year.do people have to start dying like gm's ignition switch before someone in the federal govt gets off their rear end and actually does their job? alsospiralcable recall that could damage driver's airbag(cob (c1b)i have paperwork from toyota and dealer stating the recall and now they are denying that one exists or ever existed.also, when transmission shifts at low speeds(usually downshifting, clunk is heard in drive shaft)too much lash in rearend or junk u-joints. I have an aas in automotive technolgy and over 105 credits inautomotiveengineering . I'm not just blowing smoke.when i lived in nys, i had avehicle inspection license and i would definitely fail many toyotaswith these problems.no inspection sticker-no driving of vehicle.

The air bag sensor came on in my '09 toyota tacoma.the vehicle was brought to a mechanic and a diagnostic test was run.the diagnosis was a faulty air bag spiral cable.this identical issue forced a recall of 481,000 tacomas, including '09 vehicles.however, i was told that my truck did not fall within the vin # database that is covered by the recall.this is resulting in an out of pocket repair costing $500.i find it hardly coincidental the exact same design flaw that affected nearly 500,000 vehicles just popped up in my vehicle.without spending the $500, my barely 4 year old truck will not pass inspection in the state of ma.i bought a tacoma based on it's reputation for reliability.currently i am breaking the bank just to make it legal to drive on the road.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the clock spring had failed. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number 12v092000 (air bags). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 155,000.

Airbag warning light on and horn does not work.after researching, learned this is an airbag clock spring (otherwise known as a spiral cable) issue that has a related recall for 2005-2009 toyota tacomas under campaign number 12v-092.that recall applies only to 7 channel circuit spiral cables and not the 16 channel ones.the 7 channel circuits are steering wheels without the audio controls, where the 16 channel circuits have steering wheel audio controls.toyota dealer wants to charge $400 for part, plus labor.absolutely ridiculous when this is an obvious problem that is occurring regardless of the channel circuit type.my daughter has a 2008 toyota tundra with exact same problem.

Cruise control became finicky spring/summer 2019.i found articles stating that it could be the clockspring/spiral cable.i replaced the clockspring and that fixed the cruise control issue, but it caused my airbag light to turn on.i have been driving around with the airbag light on for the last year and a half.over that time, the radio controls on the steering wheel have quit working (first the volume, then the channel, and the mode buttons).these haven't been working for at least 3 months now.just yesterday, the cruise control went out completely.no warning signs or acting up.it just quit.from what research i have done, this issue was handled under a recall, but the recall only applies to the tacoma models without audio controls on the steering wheel.has that changed at all?why were not all versions/configurations covered?

Headlight lens get hot melted lens, light bulb plug is also burned ready to crack this is a safety issue

The radio on my 2009 toyota tacoma access cab 4 cyl pick up randomly turns off and back on. It also randomly changes channel frequency from set position, and the lcd display screen is filled with unreadable characters.i was told by the dealership that this has been a problem on all toyota models and toyota does not have any fix as of yet. I wanted them to install a new unit and the dealership refused, stating that all of the radios were defective and i would just be installing another defective unit. They advised me to call them back 4 weeks later to see if toyota had a fix yet. It has been 3 months now and no fix.

My one week old 2009 toyota tacoma truck's blue tooth function is defective. It will not read contacts from cell phone. I am supposed to enter my 500 ever changing contacts one by one into the truck's blue tooth system. Otherwise, i will have to look at my cell phone while driving, dial the number, then talk on the blue tooth. Toyota e-mailed that i should have known my cell phone is not compatible with their system. There is no where in toyota tacoma manual or else where specifying the necessity for specific make, model, and carrier of cell phone to be compatible with the toyota blue tooth. My cell phone is an lg, vx8300 model purchased about a year ago. My carrier is verizon wireless. After asking for my cell phone make, model, and carrier, toyota e-mailed to me that my cell phone is not compatible with their vehicle blue tooth system. Toyota did not mention what carrier, cell phone make, and model i should have to be able to work it. They are ignoring the issue. Please help.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While driving the radio will suddenly turn off without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection. The technician stated that radio needed to be replaced. The current and failure mileages were 3000. Updated 01/26/10the radio would come on and go off various times with no warning. The dash and head lights flickered. Updated 01/26/10.

The drl (daylight running lights) bulbs were designed to close to the lens cover and the bulb is to hot. It burnt / melted the lens on both the right and left headlights. It leaves a dark spot ( approx 2.5 inches in diameter) . It happened when the outside temp was hot (greater than 105 deg f) and the running lights were on (they come on automatically when truck is started). I have looked on line (google search) and a lot of people are experiencing there headlights having a melted / burnt spot on both the right and left sides. Thelocal dealer says there is no fix or recall currently. I have read that some people were getting this problem fixed if the mileage or time was within the warranty. Mine occurred after. I believe this could be a fire concern and the burnt spot is semi blocking the performance of the drl. The drl is so people can see you coming. There needs to be a recall!

Both headlamp assemblies show inner running light/turnsignal lens have bubbling, burning and now the right one has cracked with the inner lens separating. I have checked both bulbs and they are the proper, listed bulbs, 4157na

Headlight housings turn signal/dtrl lens is burned and cracked due to excessive heat from bulb. Apparently from what i have read in forums and other on line sources, toyota is avoiding this problem by saying no remedy due to factory warranty expired or completely denying it. However, they have made available upgraded replacement parts. I bought this vehicle in march 2011 and noticed this condition right after purchase. It has now worsened to the point they need to be replaced. Vehicle now has 48,381 miles.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the day time running light system failed which caused the lens to fracture and the bulbs to burn. The turning signals that are connect to the daytime running lights also failed. The contact replaced the daytime running light bulbs several times; however, the failure was not corrected. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The daytime running light system was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 67,000.

My vehicles daytime running lights (drl), which are located in the headlight assembly, are burning through the lenses. The lens in front of the bulb is discolored and seems to be melting due to overheating. The plastic is dark and looks burned. Because of the defect there is concern for driver safety as there seems to be an obvious fire hazard that has not been addressed by toyota. This problem exists in both of my front headlights.

Running lights melting, possible fire threat.

Without any warning or assistance the tacoma's radio will, all by itself, randomly change stations, turn itself on/off and increase/decrease the volume. During these occurrences it displays odd characters on it's led screen. When it shuts itself off it's impossible to turn back on until quite sometime later.what's especially disturbing is when it suddenly turns itself on at maximum volume.

Radio turns off on its own.display sometimes does not work while radio is on.display sometimes is erratic.toyota of saint croix,us virgin islands removed it. Will put in a new one by 6/8/09. I'm driving without a radio for now!after slowing down to enter a sharp turn, when trying to accelerate out of the turn the vehicle's rpm raises to 2000 but only revs. No output is achieved. To correct this i let go of the accelerator pedal and depress a second time. Output is achieved this time. Acceleration occurs. Informed toyota of saint croix. No technical service bulletin addresses this ...yet!was advised to keep filing complaints with toyota.

Daytime running lights (drl) light bulbs along with outside temperatures generated enough heat to cause bubbling and cracked both headlight lenses. This may posed a fire hazard.

The daytime running lightshave melted and cracked the lens/plastic. These are also used as front end turn signals. If these fail, it could be a major safety hazard. While there is a tsb, the dealership denied to pay for replacements since my 36k warranty has now expired.this is not something that just started to happen and toyota is aware of the problem.

I have a 09 tacoma and the drl's have actually burned, melted and popped the lens in front of them. Also, the bulbs themselves, upon examination, have burned the socket in which they are held. You can see black around the base of them. Took it to toyota at 59k miles and i have the platinum 7year/100000mi warranty and was told it would cost me 1100 for parts alone to fix, offered no help and lied to me and said they have had no other incidents of this nature and its a rare problem never before seen. I have removed my drl bulbs out of concern of a fire starting and then i probably get stuck with that bill of a burnt front end. I should not have to pay because toyota put in a bulb that's too hot or because toyota decided to make a cheap plastic cover for the bulbs. I had zero influence on this failure. There are countless posts on all kinds of websites concerning this problem. I can track down over 1000 in less than 30 min. Please help. When i call toyota i just get bullied around and talked to like i'm dumb or don't know what i'm talking about.

Excessive heat from daylight running light bulbs cause my vehicle headlight lenses to slowly burn and crack.

Daytime running lights generated enough heat to melt. The interior colored lens on both headlight assemblies, i noticed discoloration and cracks in the colored lens within 1st 12 months. More recently the colored lens began to melt and run, looks as if they were exposed directly to flames. There is also noticeable heat damage to the clear exterior lens cover near the area of the drl. Toyota issued a service bulletin but did not notify owners of the potential fire hazard this may cause. Heat damage has clearly become more severe over time.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the vehicle accelerated to 95 mph without intention. He had to shift the vehicle into neutral to decelerate. He then restarted the vehicle and resumed normal operation.the vehicle was taken to a dealer for inspection. A technician speculated that the cause of the failure was either a computerized system reset or a floor mat interference.the vehicle was returned to the dealer. The failure and current mileages were 3,100. The vehicle identification number was unavailable. Bl

On three occasions my 2009 toyota tacoma would continue to run with the ignition switch turned off and the key removed.

On the headlight assembly of my vehicle both of the running light lenses are melting. They first started to bubble and i noticed it at approximately 40,000 miles. I took it into the dealership to have it checked out and they said that the warranty would not cover it and offered no fix. Recently, i looked at the lenses again and they are now cracked and burnt. The plugs that the bulbs are in are burnt as well. Toyota told me they would pay half of the damages, but not the whole thing. In toyota's service bulletin that they published in 2011, it states that the 2005-2011 vehicles have defective headlights and came out with a new designed headlight for them. With that said, my tacoma is a 2009 model. One of my biggest worries regarding this defect is the fact that i like to go on road-trips in my vehicle which sometimes requires me to drive for long periods of time. I am concerned that over time the lenses will melt completely and cause a fire or short in the wires. I have three small children and i should not have to worry about defected headlights catching fire and endangering them. The last time i went to the toyota dealership, i walked around and looked at the used tacoma's and found the same issues on almost all of vehicles. Like i said my biggest thing is my safety and toyota knows that they manufactured a defective headlight and refuse complete responsibility for it.

The daytime running lights have melted the lens and the high heat has also cracked and distorted the main head light lens on my 2009 toyota tacoma.

Electrically issue, highly distracting to driver.while radio malfunction is not a "safety issue" per sea, the manor in which the tacoma radios malfunction is highly distracting to the driver. Radio changes station by itself, turns itself off, displays strange text characters on the dash and does not respond to dash controls, it is highly distracting when driving. (google tacoma radio problems).

The day time running lights that also doubles as turn signals are burning a hole through the plastic lens inside the headlights and cracking the lens as well.these are a known issue with toyota and they put out a t-sb-0129-11 on september 7th, 2011 and called it an "appearance concern".it is also a fire hazard as i don't believe the lenses should be melting.

Additional info:received a telephone call from jennette at (rosville, ca ??) toyota on dec 14, 2009.i explained the 3 incidences to jennette.she gave me toyota case number 0912121226.jennette told me to take vehicle to toyota.took vehicle to toyota dealership in chico, ca on december 16, 2009 and provided extensive details about the problem to service advisor gary swietanski.they now have the vehicle and are going to check it out.however, he said that toyota told him that they still have no "fix" or campaign to repair this defect.

Like a great many other people, i am experiencing major problems with the radio in my 2009 toyota tacoma. The radio turns on and off randomly with no input from me. It also switches bands (fm1 to fm2, etc.) of its own volition. Sometimes it refuses to turn on at all. Judging from the other complaints scattered around various forum sites on the internet, this problem seems particularly prevalent in the "access cab," which is the model i recently purchased. This bizarre behavior has been happening from the day i drove the car off the dealers lot: the radio--which i thought was off-- suddenly began blaring at high volume. After about one second, it. Turned itself off again. It was startling to say the least, and i'm glad it didn't happen in heavy traffic. The radio exhibits some kind of "poltergeist" manifestation almost every time i drive the vehicle. So far toyota's response to my problem also seems typical of what others are reporting. The company (and the dealer) appear to be stonewalling and stalling. The internet is rife with complaints about the radio yet there is no service bulletin (presumably because there is only an indirect connection to safety issues and the lawsuits they can bring). The service writer at my dealership stoutly maintained that he had never heard of the problem. When i told him that i had found complaints all over the internet, he attempted to convince me that i was the victim of internet hysteria--as if i couldn't tell when my radio was turning on and off without human input. In spite of the fact that toyota has known about the problem for the better part of a year, the service writer tells me that "a technician will have to examine the radio for defects and get part numbers and so forth before he can make repairs." in other words, i have to make at least two trips to the dealer (25 miles away) to solve what should be a simple recall issue, and i have to hope an electrical gremlin appears on demand when the technician checks it.

Both front marker light lenses are melting and the lamp socket is charred brown. The plastic lens is burnt brown and cracked. After driving for just a half hour, the plastic lens covering the marker light was soft and very hot. The hot marker lights were always on when driving, as as the directional turn signal lights. This a factory design defect. At what temperature will the plastic lens or socket wiring start an electrical fire? ...updated 11-06-13

Both left and right dtrl lenses are melted from heat from the bulb, i am worried about an electrical short, or fire. Dealer says it is cosmetic and does not want to replace headlight assemblies since vehicle is out of warranty. I believe this is a safety issue that toyota motor company should address with urgency.

My trucks headlight unit has daytime running lights "amber turn signal lighting" and its continued to cause melting around the housing. This has been going on for a year now and the dealership has been informed on more than one occasion and they refuse replacement because its not a declared recall from toyota.the light issue continues to get worse and is almost completely melted around the turn area.

Vic. 2009 toyota tacoma pu ,jbl radio factory sys. Radio comes on and off at will , shakes you up to the point all most rear ended traffic in front, first time to dealer with no response, second time sunshine treatment but told one on order. Maybe fix on 4/15/2009.

The plastic housing/plastic lens covering the amber daytime running lights and the clear fog lights are burned, melted, cracked and broken.this is not due to any front end collision but due to the extreme heat generated by the original factory-installed light bulbs.the lights are generating so much heat that they are melting, burning and cracking the plastic housing which then breaks under driving stress.compounding the problem is that there is no way to turn off the daytime running lights when the vehicle is in operation.either the daytime running lights must be on or the headlights must be on.therefore, the lights continue to burn the plastic housing.toyota will not completely cover the cost to repair and replace these defective light systems stating that the vehicle is out of the 3 year warranty.although the vehicle is one year out of the 3 years manufacturer's warranty this problem did not occur overnight but is the result of 4 years of use.the lens have been progressively getting worse over time.because the lens are burned, we are concerned that a fire could occur.

My vehicle daytime running lights (drl), are burning through the lenses. The lens in front of the bulb is discolored and seems to be melting and cracking due to overheating. The plastic is dark and looks burned. Because of the defect there is concern for driver safety as there seems to be an obvious fire hazard that has not been addressed by toyota. This problem exists in both of my front headlights.

Daytime running lights are to close to the plastic in front of the bulb, which has cracked and melted the plastic lens, which is a fire hazard.

Entering my complaint as electrical as it involved the door actuator mechanisms and fob for locking and unlocking the door locks - fob gets easily "un programmed" and cannot be reprogrammed.door actuators are faulty with light duty dc motors that operate the door lock mechanism - the dc motors are prone to carbon build-up inside, etc.rear doors (and possibly front doors, as well) have interior failure of door exit handle which is a life-safety issue in the event one must exit the vehicle.and, this is a nuisance simply wishing to exit the vehicle when there is no emergency.this is a failed component of not just the toyota tacoma, but numerous other toyota vehicles.i have entered today's date as to when this occurred; however, this vehicle has been having the problem mentioned above for the last two years.

Inside the front left and right headlight assembly is a combination turn signal indicator/ emergency flash indicator/daytime running light.the lense for this combination indicator inside the headlight assembly has melted and affected the integrity of the component.i contacted my local dealership twice and toyota customer satisfaction by telephone.but they did not offer any additional information for correcting the problem, except for total replacement of the complete assembly at my expense.by the regulations of the federal government with the dot toyota should comply with part 564 of the safety regulation requirements, and by this should notify owners of the optional replacement parts as a service bullitin with a mailed notification letter.because of this oversight toyota has chosen to adapt a stratagy to use an exception to their warranty contract by limiting their responsibility in effect of component exclusions i.e. Light bulbsbecause of toyota's inabillity to recognise and address this issue with a notification. Many of the dealers and owners who could have corrected the improper matching of the assemblies, before damage to the integrity of the signal indicators required safe operation was lost and toyota gained considerable financial advantage at the expense of safety.

Ignition coil failed causing rough engine.

Daytime running light bulbs on both headlight assemblies have burned straight through the orange plastic covers, causing them both to bubble, and crack in half.this is now causing the entire headlight assembly to fog over!bought truck brand new from dealer so these are the original, factory equipped headlamp assemblies.they have never been changed.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph around a curve, the abs engaged without the brakes being depressed. The electronic stability control warning indicator illuminated with a chime and then turned off. The failure recurred nine times. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 19,000. The vin was unavailable.

In a left cloverleaf turn, approximately 40 mph, the stability control system seemed to apply the front brakes, causing the truck to slide uncontrollably to the right. Since then, this has happened numerous times,in both directions, at speeds between 15 and approximately 50 mph.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to new country toyota of saratoga springs (3002 ny-50, saratoga springs, ny 12866, (518) 584-7272) and repaired per an unknown recall regarding the frame. While driving various speeds, there was an abnormal noise coming from the vehicle. When the vehicle accelerated, the noise intensified and the steering wheel vibrated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was 92,000.

On a intermittent basis the engine will suddenly accelerate when the brakes are applied.this is not a problem related to the floor mats.the last occurrence took place as i was entering a parking space the engine suddenly accelerated forcing me to forcefully apply brakes and pushing the gear shift into park.i looked at the mats and they were in there correct position.this has occurred about four times in about five years.

Check engine light: p0420 fault code. Also, there is a rattling sound and exhaust back up to the pressure release mount where the exhaust connects to the engine. Dealer diagnosis catalytic converter is failing, replacement required also the heat shield is ratting.i want to know if i can get my 2009 toyota tacoma truck vin added to the 2010-2014 tacoma 2tr-fe exhaust pipe catalytic converter warranty extension f0u.https://www.toyoheadquarters.com/threads/2010-2014-tacoma-2tr-fe-exhaust-pipe-catalytic-converter-warranty-extension-f0u.474/

The contact owned a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated while driving at 55 mph, they were informed by another driver that the vehicle was on fire. The vehicle spontaneously caught fire in the engine compartment.all the instrument cluster warning lights were illuminated.the contact was able to pull over and exit the vehicle before the vehicle was engulfed in flames.there were no reported injuries. The fire departmentwas on the scene.a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent lot. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 97,000. The contact stated the vehicle was a total loss. *dt *dt

The dipstick housing tube is completely rusted.

I came to a red traffic light and i hit the brakes but the car would not slow down so grabbed the steering wheel and pushed down on the brake petal but the car still would not stop so put the transmission in neutraland the car finally stopped but the engine continued to race the tack was up to 4000, when the light changed to green i put the car into drive and the car jerked forward and after about 4 seconds the tack dropped back to 2000 rpm.

Fuel ratio sensor light displayed at 34,000 mile and 39 months of ownership. Toyota will not pay for the repair.

The original water by-p pipe was faulty. The pipe was made of plastic and it wore off at the flange.this caused coolant to leak out and caused overheating, loss of heat and coolant.the new part number from toyota is 1626875131 which is now made of what appears to be stainless steel.the part from the dealer list 58.04the labor from the dealer i was quoted was 6-8 hours and total parts would cost about $150.which included gasket 1625875021, bolt w washer 90119a0183, gasket, intake 1717775040, gasket, throttle 2227175070, and super longlife antifreeze 2 00272sllc2. I did this work myself and at the age of 59 it was both a mental and physical strain.the intake has to be taken off to gain access into the valley to reach the water by-p pipe.i did this work in dec. 2019.i had a hard time seeing exactly where the anti-freeze was coming from and had replaced the thermostat a number of times before realizing the real issue.this should be a recall from toyota as it could cause a car to over heat and blow a head gasket because of this faulty part.it must be obvious to toyota because the pipe is now stainless steel. I'm lucky i didn't break any intake bolts or fuel lines in the process. My 2009 toyota truck has almost 200k and is back running without leaking anti-freeze.i'm not sure if i can get anything back for what i paid for and my time, but perhaps this will help others.i have photographs before and during the work i performed.please let me know what i or others can do.thank you.i did the work in my garage

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma.whenever the contact turns the vehicle, the engine revs very loudly.however, the transmission does not engage.the contact is concerned that a crash could occur.the dealer stated that the failure was due to computer failure, but the manufacturer has not yet provided a remedy.the contact called the manufacturer directly and they sent a technician to test drive the vehicle.the technician stated that this was a characteristic of the vehicle and there was no remedy available.the failure mileage was 15 and current mileage was 2,100. Updated 8/18/09 the consumer stated the vehicle seemed to be missing 1st gear for a few seconds. Updated 08/21/09

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph or less, the vehicle suddenly shut down completely. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer who could not find the cause of the failure but would eventually be able to restart it. The dealer replaced a computer chip but the failure continued. The contact called the manufacturer who told him that the problem could be bad fuel. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was 25,375. The failure mileage was approximately 14,500.

I have 2009 toyota tacoma double cab 4x4 v6. Ialso had 2008 model of the same vehicle. Both these vehicles shared a common negative characteristic. The engines have sudden rpm increases that are significant enough topropel the vehicles forward. This usually occurs while the vehicle is stopped and the transmission is in the drive position , at a red light for instance. Additional pressure must be applied to the brakes to maintain control of the vehicle. This problem was identical on both tacomas.

While stopped at a red light and crosswalk waiting for two pedestrians to cross my 2009 toyota tacoma sport began to attempt to accelerate on its own.the only way i was able to stop it was to put the automatic transmission in neutral - with the engine racing out of control until i managed to turn the ignition key off.my vehicle has about 10k miles on it.luckily i was able to keep the brake on hard enough to prevent hitting the pedestrians while my tires were smoking because of the engine revving.

My 2009 toyota tacoma has a demented mind of its own when it comes to unexpected acceleration. I will describe what it has done at least 10 times in the year and a half since i (unfortunately) purchased it. As i take my foot off the accelerator and apply it to the brake, the engine speeds up to more than 7,000 rpm. I continue pressing on the brake which starts to slip. To avoid a crash i must quickly shift the transmission into neutral. As the engine reaches maximum rpm's, it then dies back to an idle.it is not the floor mat or the acceleration pedal causing this.nine of these times i have been going forward, but this morning this exact same thing happened as i was slowly backing up into a parking space.now here's the even sadder situation we have. My wife owns a 2009 toyota rav4 and the exact same thing has happened in that vehicle on 3 separate occasions.(i have filed a complaint on her vehicle as well.)this is not driver error.it's a very scary situation and we are both hopeful nothing serious happens to us or the vehicles in front of us as we are trying to stop our vehicles. *ln

While driving my 2009 toyota tacoma sport pick-up truck in a lowes home improvement center parking lot today (11/27/10 at 2:25 pm), my tacoma began a very rapid acceleration as i put my foot on the brake to slow down rounding an isle turn in the lot and preparing to park the vehicle. I applied immediate heavy pressure on the brake since a toyota prius was right in front of me and i did not want to hit it. During my braking the rear tire(s) was spinning and screeching on the pavement. The truck moved forward about 5 feet and then the motor shut off as i was reaching to turn off the ignition. Whew! this happened in all of a span of maybe 4 to 5 seconds. Thank god i had just recently taken the truck in for a recall where the dealer cut back the accelerator pedal and installed new software to shut off the engine when the brake was applied. This new software saved my butt and that of the prius too. Who knows the damage that might have been done without it.this is my (the tacoma's) 3rd rapid acceleration incident and 3rd time i am reporting to the nhtsa. First report was on 12/03/09 id: 174319. This time i was parked with the motor running. Upon moving the shift lever from p to n the motor rapidly accelerated. Since the car was in neutral i was able to shut off the ignition. I took the truck to the dealer the next day and they "found no problem". Right! my second report to the nhtsa was on 4/14/10 odi: 10325627. Same problem as with the first report to the nhtsa. I did not take it to the dealer this time because i knew that they would "not find anything."for this latest incident i am taking the truck in on monday morning, 11/29/10 at the dealer's request to me today. Regardless of what the dealer may say to me or does, i am getting rid of the tacoma. It has become too dangerous to drive. I am lucky my wife was not driving the tacoma when this last incident happened. See also 10294490 and 10325627.*dsy

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated while sitting idle with the engine running, there was an unusual increase in engine rpms to 4000 for approximately three minutes. The vehicle then resumed normal idling. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact stated the failure occurred approximately three times before taking the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the failure the failure mileage was 1,500 and the current mileage was 3,500. 2009 toyota tacoma with 550 miles. Engine started making noise. Took vehicle in on 18mar09;valves and lifters need readjusting. Picked vehicle up on 20mar09 still making noise and louder. Both exhaust manifolds warp and leaking with blue on metal. Supposedly fix but engine still making noise. Now heads and piston have blue. Truck has been in dealerships service for two weeks now.help

I always wanted a toyota truck ever since i was 16. Now at 38 i decided to purchase a 2009 tacoma brand new and i currently have 30,000 miles on it and i began noticing an annoying whining sound from the rear of the vehicle at 65 - 70 mph.i brought in in to my local toyota dealership and they said it was normal.i was shocked to hear this since i have never heard this noise from any of the trucks i have owned previosuly and i checked online and thier is a tsb for the differential for this type of problem in 2008 models.i told toyota this and they said a rep would be coming out.a week or so later the rep came out and i recievied a call stating that the vehicle is normal and the noise can be heard in other tocamas as well.the rep said to wait and a tsb might or might not be released.i was very upset at this especially when i read online that toyota fixed this problem for other people.i opened a case up with toyota and they did not even care one bit.now last week as i went to park my truck in the garage and i shifted it in drive with my foot on the brake (not the gas pedal)the vehicle's rpm raced up and the vehicle tried to lurch forward.shocked to say the least i then shifted the vehicle into neutral waited a few moments as the vehicle kept racing up i then shut it down. I started it back up and it idled normally. The next day i called toyota to state that this is a safety issue.toyota wanted me to bring it in right away.i took it in and they had a long listed form of questions like where was the floor mat,was cruise control on, do i use both feet to drive one for brake and one for the gas pedal.i told them nothing was on the pedal,i did not have cruise control on, and i use one foot to drive the vehicle.my foot was on the brake only. My foot cannot even hit the gas when its on the brake. They think it is me.this is a safty issue and they treat it like it's nothing.toyota.bad customer warranty service.please help me with this issue.

My complaint does not actually involve toyota but it does involve in aftermarket part that i installed on my vehicle. I ordered aset of weathertech floor liners, which is suppose to be molded for your vehicle floors. The major problem is the clutch petal wants to catch under the mat itself. I can show a video if you would like , but i feel this is a safety issue. I can probably fix this problem with a little bit oftinkering, but i should not have too.

Audio system activates uncontrollably while driving.unpredictable activation.inability to control device, distracting drivers or surprising operators without warning.volume uncontrollable.

The radio/mp3 player on my 2008 toyota tacoma randomly shuts off.it would randomly come back on after a few minutes or sometime 20-30 minutes later.

The sound system turns on -- loudly -- by itself. Cannot be turned off unless you turn off engine.i believe dealer was cognizant of this before i was sold brand new 2009 tacoma, and (california) toyota assures my problem is being resolved, and i will get a new working sound system, but all i seem to get are promises.as i startle easily -- this is a most dangerous paradigm!

Radio turns on and off erratically, has been replaced once and is now doing it again, needs to be replaced again unfortunately.

I notice the brake pedal goes all the way down before the brake feels that is applied. I've taken back to dealership and they found nothing in error. I disagree. I've had several other people drive my car-with the same concern. Brakes don't grab. My brother who is ups head mechanic said the same, a fault with the brake pedal. Shouldn't have to go to the floor before the braking system is applied. Just want you to know there's a problem there. I'm aware of it so i drive with caution. But this needs to be address. Thanks, patti kay. I took back to dealership oct.22 2008 and they said the cause was from the floor mat---it doesn't matter how many floor mats you have it's in the pedal. Either needs adjusted or new pedal system put in.

Radio in my 2009 toyota has turned itself off three seperate times without explanation. Vehicle has 10k miles on it.

The radio/mp3 player on my 2008 toyota tacoma randomly shuts off.it would randomly come back on after a few minutes or sometime 20-30 minutes later.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the headlight lenses became melted and cracked. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for inspection but they only took pictures of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified who stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was 37,383.

Driving light/amber signal light on front of vehicle. Bulbs are too hot and have melted the lens inside the headlight assembly.socket that bulb plugs into is also charring from heat. Concern that plastic will ignite if left unresolved. Vehicle is toyota tacoma 2009 pre-runner.

Front amber turn lamps bubbled, look very hot on plastic lens, burnt through, could possibly cause fire? lens cracked.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the passenger's side headlight housing melted. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who confirmed the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 25,000 and the current mileage was 80,000. The vin was not available.

Daytime running lights are causing melting and cracking of the lens covering from the inside. I took my vehicle to a toyota dealership in tampa, florida. Vehicle was inspected.i called toyota customer service on november 28, 2012 and explained that this is a fire hazard and requested it be repaired. Toyota customer service called me back on november 28, 2012 and said that because the "original factory warranty" had expired so that there would be no remedy offered by toyota. This problem is well documented online on various tacoma / toyota owners' sites. Personnel at the dealership told me that the "replacement part" had been re-designed to eliminate this problem....so toyota is aware of the problem. The headlight is progressively getting worse. It seems that the daytime running lights were not properly engineered in this model. Because of the defect there is a clear conscience the melting lenses create an obvious fire hazard. The toyota dealership where i purchased my tacoma in the tampa florida area advised me that toyota has no recall of extended warranty for this "known" problem. I was very dismayed to hear this because the issue is clearly presents a threat to the driver. Because of this situation i have to make a decision on what options are available to me. Either i replace the entire headlight assembly with the toyota factory assembly which is already known to have a defect or i figure out a way to disable the daytime running lights to cut back on the head that builds up with them constantly being on. I would rather not disable the daytime running lights because i believe that they do provide significant safety value. I am not sure what i am going to do at this point but clearly action is needed. I would like toyota to step up to the plate and replace the defective potentially harmful headlight assemblies.

The daytime running lights that's also the turn signals have melted and cracked the lens on my 2009 toyota tacoma crew cab sr5 4x4.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While examining the vehicle, the contact noticed that the daytime running lights were beginning to melt the headlight housing. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vin was not available. The current and the failure mileage was 60,000.

Daytime running lights (drl) light bulbs along with outside temperatures generated enough heat to cause bubbling and cracked both headlight lenses. This may posed a fire hazard.

The running lights melted the lenses at 35000 miles and i took my truck back to toyota and they replaced the lights, said they put bulbs in there that would not get as hot.now at over 80000 miles they have melted again, the plastic is turning black, looks like a possible fire hazard.i have seen this same issue with other similar models.toyota is aware of the problem, needs to recall and properly fix!

The dtrl amber bulb has melted both lens due to excessive heat from bulb.the left/right lens are cracked and falling apart.

Daytime running light (dtrl) housing burned/melted/cracked on both lh & rh.safety related system with proper oem factory bulbs still installed.

The contact would like to use the complaint that was sent via email.jo.not sure who to contact but i am a safety professional for many years and an incident last night confirmed an obvious danger to drivers based on the relationship between dashboard lighting and headlamp activation. A near miss last night reminded me of the same condition i noted last year in a similar incident. I believe a significant threat to drivers exists, it is an unrecognized threat, a simple remedy would correct and i would like to discuss that concern.

In september 2011, i noticed the daylight running lights had an orange/brown spot in the middle of the lens.eights months later, the daylight running lights have melted and cracked the plastic lens.the passenger side lens has completely melted in half.the bulb appears to sit too close to the lens in the housing unit.fire risk.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the daytime running lights became overheated and fractured. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised the contact that there were no recalls for the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted who stated that there was no defect. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 66,000.

2009 toyota tacoma front turn signals burning lens.amber turn signal bulbs appear to be to high of wattage from factory.lens are bubbling/melting and discoloring from heat from the bulbs.drivers side must have gotten hot enough to crack the turn signal lens itself.possible fire hazard.a check of 9 other similar tacoma trucks on hickam afb shows the same problem with 3 other vehicles or 3 tacoma's counting mine.vehicle has just under 20,000 miles and never been in a accident.turn signals also act as daylightrunning lights which are turned on whenever truck is running.[xxx] only property damage was to the truck lens, burnt/cracked.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Tl * the contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the headlight lens would continuously overheat and become cracked. The contact was concerned that the vehicle would possibly catch on fire since the bulb was so close to the lens.the vehicle was not taken for inspection or repairs. Front left and right signal light lens melted and cracked. Unit was inspected by an authorized dealer and determined to replace both headlights under warranty due to defect lens. Approximately a year later lens melted and cracked again. Called toyota to report and find out if there is a recalls for this issue. Toyota representative initiated a report and informed me that there is not a recalls for this issue at that time and will not be replaced due to vehicle is not under warranty.at this time i am not sure at what point this lens melting; due to the light bulb heat may cause a fire and i am taking under consideration to remove the signal light bulbs which will make signal lights nonoperational.it has to be a bad manufacture headlight design that is causing that area to melt and an investigation should be initiated for recall consideration. Your response will be appreciated.

The contact stated that the daytime running lights would cause the headlight lens to overheat, melting the plastic lenses. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised that there was a bulletin from the manufacturer that stated if any headlight was defective they have to replace both headlights. The dealer will repair the failure of the parts free of charge, but the contact has to pay for the labor. The manufacturer was notified and advised the contact that there were no recalls and offered no further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 37,800.

The running / parking lights are burning through and melting the lens covers on both sides of headlight assemblies.there are visible burn marks and cracks on the lens for both sides of the vehicle.

I noticed the daytime running light lens had cracked & melted.this is obviously a defect due to the amount of heat the bulb is putting out.i am disappointed that a company such as toyota will not take care of this problem.according to what i have read the fix is over $700 to fix.it makes you wonder if greed is the root of all evil.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the signal lights started to separate from the vehicle and the lens lost color. Also, the contact mentioned that the headlights were dim. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000. ...updated 04/08/15 updated 4/13/15the consumer stated the signal lights are housed in a heated lamp module and they constantly burned out/ the melted the signal lens inside the head lamp assembly and cracked the plastic and now the signal lamps are fogging up inside the lens of the head lamp assemblies.updated 04/21/15 updated 10/22/2015

When i took my tacoma pickup to the local dealer for its 35,000-mile oil change and tire rotation, they pointed out that the lenses on both daytime running lights are burned and distorted, apparently from the heat of the amber bulb. They said there is no solution other than replacing the entire headlight module on both sides. Parts and labor would be somewhere between $700 and $1,000. I'm past the three-year warranty coverage. I sent an e-mail complaint to toyota and they said this is a cosmetic problem that they will not fix. Wrong. This is a fire safety problem. From online research, i have now learned that this is a huge problem with tacomas. On new models, it has been fixed with a redesigned headlight module that moves the bulb socket farther back to prevent the heat from the bulb from damaging the lens. On older models, you could just remove the bulb to avoid a fire except that the daytime running light bulb is also the turn signal bulb. I hope you will do something about this huge safety hazard.

Daylight running lights burn /melt the lens due to excessive heat, in less then 30k miles. I believe toyota has a design problem with the drls. Every tacoma with the drl option will eventually have this problem.the compartment that holds the dlr light is small, with no ventilation, and the lamp dissipates approximately 28 watts of heat, which is focused toward the lens (along with the light).it is simply too much heat in too small an area, and the heat is sufficient to melt the plastic lens in front of the lamp.since the drl is part of the headlight assembly, the cost of parts is reported to be around $700 plus labor. I believe that lenses (with proper lamps) should never melt.asking tacoma owners to pay $700 +, every 30k miles is outrageous!my headlight assemblies were replaced under warranty, but they are sure to fail again if something is not done to correct the design of the dlrs.it appears that toyota is ignoring the problem and hoping most people won't recognize the problem until after the vehicle is out of warranty.now i am concerned that this condition will eventually lead to an electrical fire.

Parking light assembly built into headlight assembly have broken and looks like they are ready to catch fire. Split in to causing lens to blacken

The plastic lens covering the daytime running lights/blinkers are melting and cracked.the cause appears to be from the lights which are on when the engine is on.left and right side lens are melted.

Running lights melting, possible fire threat.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the head light bulbs were overheating and causing the lens to melt. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician verified the failure and stated that the headlight assembly needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 77,000.

Burning interior lens cover due to bulb placement to close to the lens.remedy : changing to a shorter bulb with lower voltage ( less heat ) or led, which will be positioned away from the lens.i have been always loving toyota vehicles but i believe deeply it is a product defect toyota should replace free of charge for those owners.they should know and avoid bulb ( heat ) / plastic lens ( position ).

Drl burning lens. Afraid it will catch on fire.

My amber driving light lens within the headlight assemblies are burned, one has broken in half.

2009 toyota tacoma. Consumer writes in regards to bubble and crack in passenger front turn signal. *ldthe consumer stated the dealer refused to repair the vehicle due to the expiration date for the repair to be made ended in 2015.

Toyota technical service bulletin# t-sb-0129-11toyota knew there is a melting/safety issue with drl yet i was not informed while vehicle was in warranty back in september 2011, when the tsb above was published by toyota.toyota still wants me to pay at 31,000 miles 2009 tacoma almost $300 to fix it.major safety issue since melting has dimmed the lighting output & poses a fire hazard as the melting has also reached the back of the bulb socket where the wiring is.please help.

There is an issue on driving amber signal lights located on front of vehicle. Bulbs are too hot, and have melted and cracked the lense cover on the inside of the head light assembly. It is hampering light out put, and could form a hole in the future which will provide a high beam of light to on coming traffic. Also, it could ignite due to heat and plastic melting.reports of this occuring on toyota vehicles have been numerous with no resolve. Mind you, this is a engineer or manufacturing mishap and error as they failed to consider at the moment of designing /manufacturing, and now the results are more than evident. Other toyota vehicles are not having this issue which means that someone figured out a resolve on their future production in order to avoid bad publicity.it is fair to say, that toyota should replace such a defect, or reimburse its customers who decide to replace them due to such a defect.thank you for considering the validity of this manner!

The headlight lenses are melting in front of the daytime running light bulbs/turn signals.i feel that this is a safety hazard and should be recalled by toyota. I was told by toyota customer service that my toyota extended platnium warrentee will not cover this part and they will not authorize the replacement of the headlights.

Daytime running lights are to close to the plastic in front of the bulb, which has cracked and melted the plastic lens, which is a fire hazard.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the daytime running lights were made with double contact bulbs. The heat from the light was burning through the lenses. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and had the lenses replaced but the dealer did not change the bulbs. The contact believed that the failure would recur because the bulbs were not replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that the failure was extremely rare and offered no further assistance. The contact stated that the bulb burned through the lens within two years. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 37,600.

2009 toyota tacoma. Last week i have to change the burnt light bulb for the turn/daytime running light and noticed that the lens inside the headlamp assembly was broken in half. By looking from the front side i can see that the plastic lens has been melted down. After a thorough inspection, i noticed that there is a trace of overheating on the socket. This issue can cause a fire on this vehicle. I hope toyota will stand for it's reputation and correct this issue. Because, it will create a fire hazard in the future.

At appx. 24,000 miles, i noticed that my 'daytime' running lights were cloudy and that both lenses were cracked.i neglected to take it in for this, since i was more concerned about the engine hesitating on acceleration.when i finally remembered to tell/show them, they weren't concerned, because the warranty was out. They did offer to split it with me. My cost would have been $492.00. Screw'em...this is clearly a factory defect.especially with as many of the same complaints i have found for this.you'd think the dot would do something.

Headlight lens get hot melted lens, light bulb plug is also burned ready to crack this is a safety issue

Excessive heat from daylight running light bulbs cause my vehicle headlight lenses to slowly burn and crack.

After completing an oil change on my 2009 toyota tacoma in october of 2011 i noticed that the amber lens in the headlight was discolored and seemed to be melting due to overheating. Over the past year i have been monitoring the situation and noticed that the melting and cracking of the amber lens inside of the headlight is progressively getting worse. It seems that the daytime running lights were not properly engineered in this model. Because of the defect there is a clear concern for driver safety. The melting lenses create an obvious fire hazard. The toyota dealership where i purchased my tacoma in the metro atlanta area advised me that toyota has no recall of extended warranty for this "known" problem. I was very dismayed to hear this because the issue is clearly presents a threat to the driver. Because of this situation i have to make a decision on what options are available to me. Either i replace the entire headlight assembly with the toyota factory assembly which is already known to have a defect or purchase and aftermarket headlight assembly and hope the it is engineered better than the toyota one, or i figure out a way to disable the daytime running lights to cut back on the head that builds up with them constantly being on. I would rather not disable the daytime running lights because i believe that they do provide significant safety value. I am not sure what i am going to do at this point but clearly action is needed. I would like toyota to step up to the plate and replace the defective potentially harmful headlight assemblies.

Running lights have melted, cracked and have brown color on plastic. Contacted toyota dealer (sun toyota) and they said it's not under warranty. Contacted toyota corp and they said that they haven't heard of this happening. I believe there is a potential of a fire happening.

Both headlamp lenses are melted and cracked from the drl (daytime running lights) bulb heat.either bulbs are too close to the lenses or the wattage istoo high. This defect is not the relult of any accident or incident, just from normal use.

The lens on my daytime running lights are melting, and i'm worried about it might causing electrical problems or even causing a fire.

The daytime running lights (drl's) on my 2009 tacoma have bubbled up and cracked the lens/plastic.i am not sure if this is because thebulb is too close to the plastic or the wattage is too high for the plastic.the drl's are also used as front end turn signals.if these fail, it could be a major safety hazard.dealership denied to pay for replacement for it is not covered under the agreements of my extended warranty.

Front headlights have yellow signal and daytime running lights that are always on and the light bulb heat up causing the plastic to heat and melt and still feel hot when using on a long drive. I worry about my car catching on fire

Both front amber daytime running light lenses melting, bubbling and cracking from bulb heat.active tsb but not valid after 36,000.

Lens covers for amber daytime running light (drl) bulbs have melted and cracked due to heat output of the bulb. A brief investigation indicates this is a common issue in this model.

The daytime driving lights are too hot causing the plastic housing to melt, crack and, in some cases, break.my research has found that this is a common problem in toyota tacoma trucks from 2005-11.in april 2015, toyota replaced the headlight assemblies with a supposed "redesigned" assembly to address this issue.however, now in april 2021, the "redesigned" assemblies have again melted, cracked and broken due to the daytime driving lights being too hot and too close to the light assembly.nothing was redesigned in 2015.whatever safety or fire hazard in the owner or operator that caused toyota to replace the headlight assemblies in 2015 still exists today.i have contacted toyota and my dealer and they have offered no assistance or remedy.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the plastic fog light cover was fractured and became melted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the fog light cover would have to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 56,000.

The running lights melt the plastic headlamp covers and literally melt the plastic, this is a picture of my second set that are also melting

Daytime running lights have burned and cracked lenses.toyota corporate says the recall is over.this needs to be fixed--repair costs over $500.please help--

Both headlamp assemblies inner lens distorted/bubbling, and one side is cracked with the inner lens separated

The daytime running lights (drl's) on my 2009 tacoma have bubbled up and cracked the lens/plastic. I am not sure if this is because the bulb is too close to the plastic or the wattage is too high for the plastic. The drl's are also used as front end turn signals. If these fail, it could be a major safety hazard. Dealership denied to pay for replacement for it is not covered under the agreements of my extended warranty.

Daytime running lights are causing melting and cracking of the lens covering from the inside.i took myvehicle to a toyota dealership in superior wi.vehicle was inspected. The service manager called toyota financial services, issuer of my platinum vehicle service agreement, and then called me a few hours later to say that my claim had been denied because "lamps" are not covered.i called toyota customer service on november 15, 2012 and explained that this is a fire hazard and requested it be repaired.toyota customer service called me back on november 19, 2012 and said that because the "original factory warranty" had expired so that there would be no remedy offered by toyota.this problem is well documented online on various tacoma / toyota owners' sites.personnel at the dealership told me that the "replacement part" had been re-designed to eliminate this problem....so toyota is aware of the problem.

Headlamps drl bulbs burned through lens. Toyota will not cover even though this was recalled previously. The design of these headlights is flawed!

The bulb to the daylight running lights melted the lens in front of it and broke it in two pieces.this is for both lights.this bulb is too close to the lens, probably a defect in engineering or design. These lights are constantly on and there is no way to turn them off.i'm afraid something will catch on fire.i called toyota dealership and was told they couldn't fix it because i didn't have extended warranty.i called corporate offices and was told i would have to get vehicle diagnosed at cost of $150 before they considered taking any action.and if it was determined that it was a manufacturing defect than i would have to pay half of the cost of the new headlights, which would be around $300, plus the $150 for the diagnostic test. Told them others have had this exact same problem, to no avail.this is not fair as it's obvious this is defective equipment/design.thank you.

Daylight headlight burned and broke in two parts.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that front turn signal lenses burned out. The contact noticed visible burn marks on both lenses. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 66,000.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the dtr lights malfunctioned and melted the headlight case. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised him that the dtr light bulb assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. The current mileage was approximately 89,569.

Burnt headlight len. The running light lens is burnt and cracked due to overheating. When i tried to contact toyota's recall phone number, after over a dozen attempts, the number was always busy.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the daytime running lights were melting the headlight lenses. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the lenses would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified and offered to pay for the cost of the lens but not for the labor costs. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 51,000.

The amber running lights have melted and on the drivers side has had cracked in half. Seems to me tpo much heat from the factory bulbs used. Seems to be a safety hazard could possible case a fire? do to the heat.i asked dealer says no recall. I have looked at other used trucks on lots and they have the same problem.. Go on the internet and your site, you will see i am not the only one with this problem.

We have noticed the daytime running lights lens are melting and cracking on both sides. I think this is a safety issue, possible fire hazard.

Day time running light covers burnt from the heat of light bulbs being mounted to close to lens cover. Lens cover cracked, burn and at some times smolders.

The plastic housing/plastic lens covering the amber daytime running lights and the clear fog lights are burned, melted, cracked and broken. This is not due to any front end collision but due to the extreme heat generated by the original factory-installed light bulbs. The lights are generating so much heat that they are melting, burning and cracking the plastic housing which then breaks under driving stress. Compounding the problem is that there is no way to turn off the daytime running lights when the vehicle is in operation. Either the daytime running lights must be on or the headlights must be on. Therefore, the lights continue to burn the plastic housing. Toyota will not completely cover the cost to repair and replace these defective light systems stating that the vehicle is out of the 3 year warranty. Although the vehicle is one year out of the 3 years manufacturer's warranty this problem did not occur overnight but is the result of 4 years of use. The lens have been progressively getting worse over time. Because the lens are burned, we are concerned that a fire could occur.

Daytime running lights are too hot causing the plastic lenses to crack, melt, and burn.toyota is treating this as purely cosmetic in t-sb # 0129-11 (for 6 model years they were aware of it).this listing should be changed to a safety recall, that amount of heat could start a vehicle fire.

Upon noticing that the left front turn signal was not working, i inspected the turn signals, noting that both front turn signals/dtrl's are cracked and appear burned.i replaced the turn signal bulb, but the turn signal still does not work.

Day time running lights melted headlights

Front turn signal lights burning and melting lens.inspection of plastic bulb socket shows signs of heat damage and potential fire hazard.

The daytime running lights have melted the lens and the high heat has also cracked and distorted the main head light lens on my 2009 toyota tacoma.

Noted scorched spot of about 2" diameter in center of both front amber daytime running lights/turn signals. Vehicle has only 34,000 miles but is over warranty age limit. I was at dealership for seatbelt recall and asked service mgr to look at.he stated that there was no recalls but that he had seen "some of this" before.he gave me # for "my toyota experience" and eventually talked to someone in california.they would not admit any knowledge of this condition but said they could only evaluate if dealership analyzed and told them what the cause was.there analysis; "yellow turn signal bulb seems to get too hot and burning lens".my cost to fix; $932.72. Toyota customer service apparently talked to dealership and will pay for the assemblies to replace with my cost being $192. With the number of identical complaints on this site it is obvious this is a design defect which has fire hazard potential.instead of stone-walling this defect toyota should own-up and fix it at their total expense.people and companies make mistakes.it takes a company with a quality conscience to do the right thing for their customers.

Running lights are melting the head light clear assembly...this is the second time for the running light bulbs to melt the head light assembly..the heat is 233 degrees using a digital heat reader...the yellow bulbs are 24 watts..

I noticed that the dtrl had started to melt the amber lenses and brought it to the attention of my local dealer.although i was still within the warranty mileage, i was over by a few months on the 36-month warranty (i bought the truck used in dec-2011.)i just heard from my local dealer that i've been trying to work with concerning the melting lenses in my '09 tacoma trd. I tried to get toyota to replace the lamp assembly and they would only cover half of the replacement and subsequent re-aiming of the head lights.i then printed out some instructions to install a toyota relay and jumper wires to turn the dtrl function off, leaving the turn signal function alone. According to the dealer, toyota will not sign off on, nor allow their dealers to make this modification, even though the parts are all toyota oem parts.i would also strongly suggest that every owner of a tacoma that is having any issue (melting, bubbling, cracking etc.) with the dtrl's write toyota corporate expressing their deep disappointment with the quality of toyota products and the corporations lack of concern for the customers safety buying the product. With all the negative that toyota has received during the past few years over safety related issues, you would think that toyota would be falling all over themselves to correct a known safety issue in a required system, instead of tap dancing around like they are doing.as a retired law enforcement officer, i find that the response i've been receiving from toyota to be particularly disappointing, especially since this is a safety issue involving a mandated lighting system.the staff at nhtsa is welcome to contact me at any time to discuss this.

My 2009 toyota tacoma x-runner has approximately 34,000 miles and has dtrl (day time running lights) and the turn signals (which are used for the dtrl) have burned, melted and cracked.i am guessing this is because of the lights are running constantly and this is causing excessive heat on the plastic lenses.i will be showing a local toyota dealership this week, and if they will not replace the headlights (i am out of warranty) then i will have to bear these costs to ensure safety from possible fire.i will be looking into removing the dtrl option, as well as possibly looking into led bulbs to cut down on the heat.

Both front amber daytime running lights (drl) are melting the plastic lens covers and it looks like there is risk of a fire.the original bulbs are in the truck.i am the original owner and have never opened or changed any of the lights on this truck.i don't know how long this has been like this, but i would guess that it has been over-heating for quite some time.the plastic is bubbling and is turning a burnt color.

My 09 toyota tacoma drl (daylight running light/turn signal) lens burned/melted/broke. I have exceeded my warranty but i feel toyota should stand behind their product and replace my light lens. My local dealer did do a 50/50 split on the cost of replacement, but this is a design problem. Light lens should never burn/melt/break regardless of how old or how many miles the vehicle has on it. Not all tacoma's have drl , this is an option, my local dealer did not know this but i pointed this out to him. I have a friend with same problem but his tacoma is still in warranty and the dealer did a 100% replacement. I contacted toyota with a letter and pictures and was told toyota would not stand behind their product because i had exceeded my warranty.

The headlight lenses are melting in the front of the daytime running lights/turn signal.both sides have the same issue.they both have a horizontal crack and a melted blob of plastic that will likely keep getting bigger. I consider this to be a safety hazard.while at lowes yesterday, i checked the headlights of one other tacoma, and he had the same issue. When i got home, i performed a google search and found several forums where owners were having the same issue.most said that when they mentioned it to their toyota dealership, the dealership acted like no one has had this problem before.some customers were able to get the headlights replaced and some were not.i'd be concerned that the replacement will have the same issue a couple of years from now.

The headlamp assembly: running lights build up excess heat and burns/cracks the lens. This has occurred on both passenger and drivers sides. On the drivers side the lens has broken and fallen out of place.

Daytime amber running lights have melted and cracked the lens. Happen around 30,000 miles but toyota said they have not heard of problem, but i know better after reading other complaints. To costly for them to fix. Maybe safercar.gov might help.

Day time running lights overheating and melting the plastic inside headlight which looks like it is burnt and black causing headlight to crack and damage to the bulbs. I have replaced driver side now and passenger side has started to melt.

Amber inside turn signal lamps attached to front headlights are scorching inside lens of headlight assembly.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the lenses for the daytime running lamps and the turn signals were melted. The contact was concerned that the failure could lead to a fire. The dealer was contacted and advised that the entire lighting assembly would require replacing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 40,000. The current mileage was 100,000.

Daytime running lights lens melted and cracked on both right and left light assemblies.

Lens covers for amber daytime running light (drl) bulbs have melted and cracked due to heat output of the bulb. A brief investigation indicates this is a common issue in this model.

Daytime running lights are melting the plastic lamp housing.all components are factory stock: bulbs, housings, wiring, etc.melted plastic housing has changed the turn signal beam geometry resulting in reduced visibility and risk of accident.also, melted material indicates a possible fire hazard.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked when he noticed that the turn signal bulbs had burned through the turn signal covering. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the turn signal bulbs were positioned too closely to the casing. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 56,250. The vin was unavailable. ..updated 11/29/12 the consumer stated the lights were no longer effective

The drls/turn signals of the 2009 toyota tacoma have a faulty design resulting with the lens melting (toyota calls it bubbling) and cracking.toyota did issue a recent tsb (t-sb-0129-11) to replace the headlight assemblies on impacted trucks.several model years were included. The tsb is worded that only trucks with less than 36k miles and less than 36 months old will be repaired.my truck had about 40k miles and was about 34 months old when i finally took it to the local dealer.i didn't bring it in when i first noticed the defect because i didn't think toyota would even consider not replacing the lights because it's an obvious design defect.some of the older models mentioned in the tsb would have been older than 36 months when the tsb was released. Drls were developed so other drivers can better see you.a melted drl lens will dim the brightness of the light to other drivers.toyota should be repairing all the damaged headlight assemblies.

My concern involves the vacuum braking system on my 2009 toyota tacoma double cab.the brakes are very inconsistent and at times the rpm's increase while braking.sometimes they are very 'sticky' and more often it takes considerable force on the brake pedal to stop.i've informed kerry toyota of florence, ky of my concerns multiple times with no resolution.this is an on-going problem that has not gotten better with time.also, i've had several issues regarding hesitation when pressing on the accelerator.it was taken in to the dealer and i was told nothing was wrong.

Was traveling on the interstate at approximately 75 mph and ran over a small piece of shredded tracker trailer tire, approximately 8-10 inches long, by 3-6 inches wide.the tire piece flew up, impacted the front facing section of my fuel tank, puncturing the top part of the fuel tank.the gash was about 1 inch, and fuel began to gush out from the front of the tank covering the top, sides, and bottom of the tank due to the wind from highway speeds.the fuel leak was not detected until i had driven 200 miles more and noticed my fuel economy dropping rapidly.when i stopped, fuel was leaking heavily onto the ground.note this is a 2wd prerunner double cab long bed.the fuel tank has no protective steel shielding on the front of the tank to prevent road debris from damaging the tank in the event of impact.

Accelerator sticks when i let off the gas pedal. Pedal does not stay physically depressed, it just doesn't slow down. If i push in clutch, engineraces and rpm stays high. Dealer told me this was engineered into the vehicle to "assist with shifting".

Vehicle shacks at idle while in gear

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v604000 (fuel system, body); however, the part for the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Purchased new toyota tacoma trd sport in aug 2009 with zero miles. All seemed ok, other than a few frustrating cab rattles here and there. However, i also noticed that as my truck neared more miles (7,000 current), i now have to press on the brake pedal a bit harder, yet when i brought this up to the dealer, they stated all was normal and could not replicate. I've had a couple of instances where i've had to press the brake pretty hard to come to a stop or slow down. It seems i need to ride it a little harder than when i first bought my truck. I also want to add, that besides the irritating rattles (door panels/tray holder in center console below the steering wheel - which was replaced, but still make pop sounds here and there, the other smaller rattles - some of which were coming from ill-fit window seals were not really fixed. The dealer replaced the seals and the popping sounds stopped for a day or so then returned. I found the problem is the seals tend to be somewhat improper fit. In other words, they are too large and cause the rubbing. I personally corrected this by removing all door panels only to find out that some of the rattle sounds i had complained about merely had a small piece of felt on the backside, which did not completely cure the problem. I purchased an entire roll of this material myself and coated the inside of each door panel then added a small piece of weather stripping to the inside of door panel edge where it touches the glass window. This helped considerably in reducing air noise and no more rattling. My complaint is still with the brake pedal sometimes, not always, needing to be pushed harder than normal to come to stop or slow down. On other thing i addressed with the dealer was the fact that when i slow down and make turn, not complete stop and go, my engine rpm's don't decelerate quickly enough for the transmission to catch up. Dealer states this is normal operating rpms catching down to shift down of tranny.

Transmission seems to slip or slide as one comes to a stop, it feels like one is getting bumped from behind.

After coming to a stop at a traffic light or stop sign, it feels like a "thud" under the vehicle and/or getting hit from behind.i noticed this on a rare occasion starting about a year ago, but it seems to now happen more often than not.

When driving the vehicle, upon reaching 35 to 40 miles per hour the vehicle starts to shake for about two to three seconds.after doing research on the computer and after having the problem diagnosed at the dealer, i was told that i needed a new transmission.apparently there is a torque converter lockup problem.i was told that the tsb does not pertain to my vehicle because it is no longer under warranty.i believe that toyota is deliberately trying to find a way to not have to fix the problem.if this is happening in other vehicles there is obviously a problem regardless of what the vehicles mileage is when the problem occurs.toyota will generally stand by the products they sell and these are the vehicles my family has ever purchased.however, we will definitely never purchase another vehicle from toyota again.

My new 2009 double cab trd 4x4 has dangerous shift patterns.when you slow down to go through an intersection and begin to make the turn the automatic transmission jumps down into 1st gear and races the engine making it hard to control the vehicle properly.toyota sent me to the dealer they tested it and stated, "normal for the model" on my ticket. They reset the "learn code" and told me off the record that other toyota cars had this problem in the past - toyota fixed it with a new software/firmware release, but we just don't have a software fix for the 09 tacoma".i sent another email to toyota last week they opened a case - but have no solutions.other owners are complaining about this as well.

At freeway speeds grinding noise from driveline upon deceleration. It sounds like something is going to break/lockup. Dealership had the truck for 2 weeks trying to diagnose the problem. They opened a service ticket with toyota and eventually a field service tech came to diagnose the truck. He didn't acknowledge it stating "no abnormal noise heard during operation at highway speeds. No further repairs authorized". I called toyota customer care and they told me "we stand behind our techs". Tcc would not allow me to speak with the field service tech?!? i expressed my fear of an accident to tcc to no avail. Why would the dealer be so concerned about my truck but toyota blew it off? i am very displeased with toyota.

Manual transmission clutch difficult engaging.slipping feeling in forward gears and reverse. The center section of the clutch disk have separated from the friction material section of the clutch disk. Defective clutch.

I have a new 2009 toyota tacoma truck which has exhibited transmission problems since i purchased it.this is not a quality issue as much as it is a design issue since the problem i am experiencing is well documented and occurs with all the tacomas using their new 5 speed ect-i automatic transmission.here are some web sites referencing the problemhttp://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2009/toyota/tacomahttp://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0de869when slowing down around turns or decelerating for other reasons, the car will downshift into a non-responsive mode and there is an extreme lag followed by a lurch forward as the transmission desperately sinks which gear to go into.i have discussed it with my dealer to no avail.they recognize the problem but can not do anything to resolve it.this situation is of great safety importance since the truck fails to respond for safety and avoidance measures.

As soon as i came to a stop at an intersection, with my foot on the brake pedal, i noticed and felt a thump coming from underneath and towards the rear of the vehicle.it does not do it every time but this has happened several times already... Updated 09/30/15updated 11/01/2017

After going in reverse then stopping and placing the vehicle in drive, the transmission will slip, i would accelerate but thevehicle does nothing but rev up and then it will finally engage.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While driving approximately 10 mph, the brakes did not work. The brake pedal went to the floorboard momentarily and then started working again. In addition, the service engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician cleaned the brakes and stated that there was no brake failure. On another occasion, while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle shifted from regular gear into four wheel drive on its own. Also, the traction control indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to joel confer toyota (814-237-5713, located at 120 clinton ave, state college, pa 16803) where the technician added transmission fluid and removed a metal piece that broke off the fuel tank cover. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. And contact was told unintended accerlation template was the problem, happen for 4 days. The contact did not believe the vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 79,899.'parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'

Clutch slips going up hill. You have to downshift when going up hill.

We were going to park the toyota tacoma truck in our garage and it all of a sudden accelerated ,increasing the speed which caused us to hit a tree and the neighbors cement wall. *cw

I am reporting an incident i had with my 2009 toyota tocoma pickup truck.i was stopped at a red light, with both feet on the brake, when the engine started revving up.i engaged the emergency brake as well, and shiftedinto neutral.the engine continued to race, until i repeatedly pumpedthe accelerator and it slowed back down.a trip to the dealer (cobbcounty toyota, kennesaw ga) revealed nothing.the floor mat was still fastened by its hooks, and was nowhere near the accelerator pedal.this occured on january 14, 2009 when the vehicle had approximately 2,100 miles on it.before this incident there were two times when the vehicle refused to shift gears until it was turned off and then back on.these incidents were also unsolved by the local dealer.

Shortly after purchase, i noticed that the truck nudges or slightly moves while at a stop, brake on and engine running.when brake is released it nudges again.i am unable to determine if this is a transmission issue or a brake issue.i have taken to toyota on number of times.nothing done.one comment from toyota online was this is the characteristic of that year transmission.funny, it did not do this when purchased.now i cant sell it because of this problem.it seems to be getting worse, but no assistance from toyota.another find online from others was that this is a drive line wrap.something to do with the drive shaft while under load.the truck runs great and i do not experience any issues with the shifting or drive-ability of the transmission while moving. New tires were installed last month and the problem seemed to diminish. It is now back to the same pattern...at every stop.can you assist with any solutions?i just would like to have it fixed.hopefully by toyota on their nickel.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Rear leaf spring recall - received safety recall interim notice sept. 2014 advising of defective rear leaf spring.contacted dealership numerous times for repair, and advised continually toyota has not yet designed or created a fix for the problem.as of july 28, 2015 dealership still does not have replacement part for the defective rear leaf spring.i have advised dealership multiple times that the vehicle when stopped and brake applied, vehicle abruptly without warning jolts forward on its own and makes a loud clunk immediately afterwards. Feels as if the vehicle has been hit from behind from another vehicle, when in fact it has not.dealership confirmed that the issues explained above are definitely related to the faulty rear leaf spring, but has no answers or any remedy of problem.i was also advised by dealership that rear leaf spring may cause brakes to fail or fuel tank to be punctured and cause fire. This is definitely not safe, and we are concerned for our safety!please intervene!updated 12/12/2017

During slowing down and coasting around 10-20 mph transmission not being able to find right gear and pressing on accelerator revs engine like it is in neutral not responding. When i called dealership workshop i was told by someone that is common problem for tacoma and there is no fix for it. Contacted toyota usa customer service who set me appointment with dealership manager who said all car needs is resetting and for car "relearning" but problem did not go away.

Rear wheel bearings grinding while driving.

Driveshaft and universal joint problem.toyota has issued a "warranty enhancement - zh2" for this problem, but it should be a full recall, as the condition can lead to sudden driveshaft failure, loss of vehicle control, and death.the problem appears to also extend to the center bearing and possibly the driveshaft itself, as i took my truck in for service under warranty, and still have vibration issues even after the warrantied parts (and center support bearing at significant extra cost) were replaced.this vibration begins around 40 mph and increases through 60 mph.i am concerned that the vehicle is unsafe to drive and may sustain a sudden driveshaft failure from improper remediation of this issue under the zh2 campaign.

Bought a 2009 toyota tacoma new. When slowing down to make a turn, then accelerate the engine revs up to 3,000 rpms and the transmissions takes several seconds to engage into gear. This is a definite hazard when it comes to on coming traffic.

My tacoma has a constant shimmy in the steering wheel.my mechanic and toyota service have tried balancing, alignments and road-force testing, but nothing works to eliminate the shake.it is at it's worst when i first accelerate to cruising speed after the truck has sat for eight hours.at these times it is an approximately a 1/4 inch shimmy in the wheel, and is quite a violent shake. It seems to dissipate after a while, but the shimmy never goes away completely.it exists with both my all-season tires, and my snow tires.

Note: the date given is for the first of several incidents.vehicle: 2009 toyota tacoma; 4 cyl. Auto trans.when ascending mountain passes, in drive, letting off on gas as summit is reached, vehicle accelerates over summit and continues acceleration. I've been able to drop the rpm by repeatedly hitting brake and then tapping gas. This lowers the rpm and puts transmission back into highest gear.this is a computer or electronic problem. It has happened the same way several times, over a few thousand miles and several months. I now make the ascent in third, shifting into drive at the summit, with no problems.i took the vehicle to the dealer, lithia toyota in klamath falls or, and was told "the computer needs to adjust to your driving style", but it still hasn't happened.toyota is stonewalling, and telling the dealers to do the same. There are dozens of similar complaints about tacomas with automatic transmission.

2009 toyota tacoma,5 speed automatic transmission. When slowing to make a turn and then resuming speed, the automatic transmission seems to be in neutral or severely slipping. Toyota service states this is normal ! makes turning with oncoming traffic is very hazardous as you don't know if the transmission will be properly engaged in gear. Always happens at 20 mph or less when in drive. I have also had this same problem when in local stop and go traffic, no turning involved.

Transmission does not respond when you accelerate after slowing probably between 1st and 2nd gear.the tach will go up but the transmission fails to engage and you just end up coasting into a turn or merging into traffic.this has occurred since i purchased the vehicle. Took it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong. But from other complaints i see this has been happening with some 09 tacomas.you cannot pull into traffic from a rolling start safely.

I have a 2009 toyota tacoma and when the vehicle is stopped for example at a red light the vehicle rpm will increase and the vehicle will then lurch forward.fortunately my foot in on the brake.the vehicle also has a whining noise from the rear of the vehicle that has been identified by toyota regional reps as a whining noise from the differential at 50 to 70 mph.taken back 3 times to dealer they say its normal but i know it is not.these may be 2 separate issues but it is clear that toyota makes it difficult for it's customers to get warranty repairs and in acknowledging a problem.toyota should be ashamed for its lack of customer service in fixing its vehicles until people get injured.

I purchased a 2009 tacoma double cab sr5 4x4 auto in june of 2009.it now has 9000kms. Ever since new i have noticed that the transmissionshifts strangely and somewhat unpredictably. When i am driving at approx 18km/h and press the accelerator (to accelerate or continue same speed) the truck usually drops into 1st gear and stays there for a few seconds before going back into second gear. This causes a "lurching" as it should not be jumping to 1st.it is very noticeable and i have driven many, many automatics, including toyotas, and they do not do this. I had a 2001 tacoma before purchasing this new one and it did not do this.also, when you shift the truck from neutral to drive, and immediately press the gas, it is almost like the truck hesitates, then lurches forward violently. Sometimes causing wheelspin. It seems like when shifting to drive there is no power for about 3 seconds then it suddenly hits.these problems are dangerous as they cause the vehicle to lurch forward when in traffic this is not safe.

Truck was purchased new in may 2009 (tacoma sr5, 4x4, access cab, 4l, v6, automatic transmission, towing package). When coming to a stop, the engine will rev up to 5000 rpm. My foot is on the brake when this happens, and i am not slamming on the brake. When i shift into neutral, the revving stops. This has happened three times in two days, not every time i stop. The truck has 3900 miles on it. After the third time, i drove directly to the dealer. They did a "system health check" and the test came back ok. They could not duplicate the condition in the time they had the vehicle. I left the vehicle there for a technician to drive to see if he/she can replicate the condition.

While in cruise at 70mph on interstate highway, vehicle shifts down from drive to second. Thus redlining the engine.brought this to the attention of toyota and their answer was,"vehicle is operating properly and is doing what it is designed to do". So they are telling me that they have designed a vehicle that is designed to shift down to second, not third at 70mph.

2009 toyota tacoma w/automatic transmission after decelerating below 20 mph to accommodate traffic or to make a turn the transmission fails to engage when trying to accelerate with traffic or out of the turn.the transmission seems to search for the correct gear for 2 - 3 seconds before responding to the accelerator pedal.will someone need to die after being struck broadside trying to come out of a turn before toyota is forced to respond to this problem?

After slowing down (normally to enter a turn) and when you depress the accelerator the transmission downshifts into first gear, the engine will race up to a higher rpm as the car suddenly slows down.this lends to the possibility of an accident as you vehicle now slows down quickly.

Automatic transmission fails to engage 2nd gear when accelerating into a turn or coasting down a hill. The rpms increases but transmission does not engage.issue occurs around 10-12 mpg.driveline rumbles from 25-10mph decelerating.dealer says truck is normal.

From a complete stop i turned right and accelerated. The transmission failed to shift causing the truck to nearly stop. Immediately after that pause, the transmission found a gear and the truck accelerated forward. My brakes stopped the truck and i drove it to my dealer. This has only happened once so far. I have an appointment to have it looked at. The toyota national hotline gave me a claim number and called my dealer to make sure they look at my problem.word on the street is that toyota knows about this computer problem and is working on a "fix". I just hope it does not take as long as the accelerator problem to fix.

I bought an '09 tacoma 4x4 on april 4, 2009. Since that day my transmission is slipping, especially when trying to accelerate coming out of a turn. Rpms bounce around and sometimes it get stuck in a gear or revs like its in neutral. I have almost been hit twice from behind because the truck doesn't accelerate. This is a real problem and a safety issue. When i talked to the dealer they admitted it was happening but that it was "normal" due to new technology with computers. When i did some research it seems that lots of others are having the same problem and toyota isn't doing anything about it. Someone is going to get hurt-there will be an accident because of this.

Bought a 2009 toyota tacoma new.the automatic transmissions has acted strange at low speeds from day one.when slowing down to make a turn, then accelerate the engine revs up and the transmissions takes several seconds to engage into gear.this is a definite hazard when it comes to on coming traffic.went to the toyota dealership and was told that it was normal for this vehicle!!!!if this is normal, this will be my last toyota.how many complaints will it take to make toyota do something about this problem?

I purchased a 2009 toyota tacoma 4x4 and the transmission intermittently slips, mostly when you first accelerate(i have almost been involved in 2 car accidents due to this)after talking and bringing the vehicle back to the dealer they say its normal,i have found that on edmunds.com 108 other toyota tacoma owners are having the same problem and getting the same answers from the dealers, you never know when its going to slip but i don't let my wife or kids ride in the truck.

When re-accelerating after a low speed turn my 2009 toyota tacoma revs high but does not go anywhere.after a second or so it returns to a normal rpm and then is in gear to drive normally.i feel this is a safety concern because if cars were approaching in a fast manner, the truck would not be able to accelerate properly to get out of the way.

While usually making left turn, coming out of the turn, putting on the gas, the transmission does not engage but will rev up to approx. 2500 rpm's and then suddenly engage and lurch forward in first gear.there is a delay in power which is dangerous if crosstraffic is coming. Same slowing down through intersection, then putting gas down.

In august of 2009 i purchased a new toyota tacoma. After a week or so i noticed that the automatic transmission was not responsive and slipped when you decelerate than accelerate. The transmission slips and stalls the vehicle while it tries to find an appropriate gear to move forward. I took it to thedealer and the tech said this is normal for new tacoma's. This is a hazardand will get somebody killed because you cannot merge into traffic under these conditions.

I brought a 2009/tacoma prerunner /acc cab 4x2 v6-and it has about 18,500 miles.my compliant is when you put this vehicle in neutral at a red light or when you stop and then put it in drive---the transmission spins for a few seconds and then it take off.i brought this to the attention of the local toyota dealerand the service person told me that this was neural with this vehicle.it?s hard to believe that this is a neutral thing.my other tacoma 2007 did not do this at all.i feel there is something wrong with this transmission.to me it's a safety hazard especially when you have the vehicle is natural/park and then you put it in drive and the vehicle goes no-where for a few second and then it take off very fast.this needs to be look in to i would be happy to bring in my vehicle for test at the local dealership. Maybe i am not explaining well enough for you to understand --however, please call me an i can explain better.

My new 2009 toyota prerunner transmission randomly slips (delays) when going from 1st to 2nd gear. I first noticed it at 150 miles.i haven't been able to establish a definite pattern, except it happens when accelerating from speeds below 10mph.i now have 1500 miles on the odometer and it still slips randomly and continuously. I'm afraid that one day i'm going to try to enter traffic and my transmission is going to slip and i'm going to have someone run into me or cause an accident.toyota has told me this is a "normal" thing. Nothing has been done about it.i was told it has something to do with the computer/emissions/and other components, working together for better gas mileage (which by the way is not all that great) and it is normal. In other words, nothing is wrong and nothing needs to be fixed, it's supposed tothat.it seems to me that the transmission randomly slipping is not something that is supposed to happen.

1.new vehicle--problem began at approximately 3000 miles.2.transmission disengages for approximately 3 seconds while attempting to accelerate after making a turn at approximately 10 mph--tachometer indicates engine speed reaches approximately 3000 rpm before the transmission reengages with a jerk sufficient to cause rear wheel slip on wet asphalt pavement. This problem occurs at almost every instance when i slow to approximately 10mph for a turn. This problem is apparently very common for my vehicle make /model--there are numerous posts on various internet sites under the heading "2009 toyota transmission problems". This problem, if not resolved, will likely cause many accidents during the approaching winter months.3.took vehicle to dealer at 4018 miles (08/12/09)--service manager test drove vehicle, refused to acknowledge problem and stated "if check engine indicator light is not on, there are no problems with the vehicle".

Have 2009 toyota tacoma trd sport pckg. Truck that i bought in february. When slowing down to turn onto another street, once i turn and press the gas pedal to accelerate, the engine revs and the transmission takes about 2-3 seconds to shift gears. Happens 5-6 times a week, whether engine is cold or hot. Serious safety hazard, as this has happened when making a u-turn in traffic with cars approaching. Two different toyota mechanics told me the tranny is computer operated and needs to learn my driving habits. Told me it will take at least 5,000 miles for the computer to learn my driving habits and for transmission to adjust. I have over 3700 miles now and tranny still seems weird. Still slipping when slowing down and then accelerating onto another street. Also, truck feels like the transmission tightens up when slowing down from 30mph to 20mph (it does not seem to coast freely, almost like the breaks are being slightly applied). Can feel the downshifting, even though it is an automatic. Mechanic told me that the computer driven tranny slows the truck down under 30 mph as that is part of the braking system. When you take your foot off of the gas, the computer prepares to brake and thus the tranny prepares for a stop he said. Mechanic also told me the camry's had an issue with their transmissions and toyota had to reprogram the computers. Toyota dealership ran a computer "cold start" test and said everything was normal. Have filed a complaint with national toyota hotline. Numerous complaints on the internet about this same issue.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma.while accelerating, the vehicle acts as if it is stuck in neutral.afterwards, the rpms slightly increase accompanied with sudden screeching noises.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the computer module.soon after the repair, the failure recurred.he is in the process of taking the vehicle back to the dealer to have it inspected, and is currently waiting for a response from the manufacturer.the failure mileage was 400 and current mileage was 700.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The transmission hesitates when attempting to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and a technician concluded that the computer software failed.he then added that there was not an updated version of the software. He called the manufacturer on 10/16/09 and was told that he would receive a response within one business day. The current mileage was approximately 4,100. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.

2009 toyota tacoma doublecab 4x4 trd, upon slowing down and entering a turn engine rpm will increase while pressing the gas pedal without vehicle accelerating before transmission engages abruptly..describe as "slipping".

2009 tacoma, 5 spd. Auto transmission.since the first day of owning this car (now at 2400 miles) the transmission does not respond when you accelerate after slowing probably between 1st and 2nd gear (10-15mph). The tach will go up but the transmission fails to engage and you just end up coasting into a turn or merging into traffic. This has occurred since i purchased the vehicle. Took it to the dealer and they said nothing was wrong.this poses a dangerous condition due to the hesitation and should not be an acceptable condition.

I recently purchased a 2010 toyota tacoma with a 5-speed automatic transmission. When i slow down for a right turn (or brake for any other reason) and then accelerate, the transmission seems to slip into neutral and fails to respond for a second or two. This problem makes merging into moving traffic very hazardous. When i went to my toyota dealer to have the problem fixed, i was told that this was "normal" for the 2009 and 2010 tacoma and no repair was available.

I purchased a new 2009 toyota tacoma in may of 2009. Shortly after purchasing the vehicle i noticed that the transmission 'slips' and does not engage at low speeds after slowing to around 10 mph and then accelerating without coming to a complete stop. This is very dangerous and i have had some close calls when turning left at traffic lights. This is a dangerous defect. I have carried the vehicle to the dealer twice and they say that toyota has recognized the problem and is working on a computer 'patch' to solve the problem. I was given no time frame to fix the problem. I "googled"toyota transmission problems and the problem appears to be so prevalentthat there is a private web site devoted to this problem. I am wondering why the government has not issued a recall? this is a dangerous situation.

2009 toyota tacoma;be afraid, do not buy it as it has transmission troubles that toyota will not live up to. Toyota is ignoring the issue!!!!i pulled out from a stop when the transmission hesitated then caught just in time for me to get through the intersection. I thought for sure i was going to be t-boned. I took it to my dealer and have yet to hear anything back.i have this truck 6 months. I was so excited to finally own a high end toyota. Since toyota "had" such a good name.i have come to the conclusion there are no good vehicles out there to buy........http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0de869here are more complaints from others that have been ripped off by toyota.something has to be done before there is a serious accident or a death due to the transmission failure.

2009 toyota tacoma automatic transmission slippage while trying to accelerate from low speed. This occurs after slowing down to between 5 and 10 mph. When you try to accelerate the engine revs up between 500 and 2000 rpm but the vehicle does not accelerate. I reported this shortly after i purchased the vehicle and the service manager said it was a known issue and all the tacoma transmissions did this and it was normal. The issue still occurs and i have asked the dealer if toyota has a fix for it every time i take the vehicle in for service and i am told there is no fix and the transmission is working correctly even though the service advisor said he get numerous complaints from other tacoma owner. This could be a serious problem if it happens while driving and i am unable to accelerate to avoid an emergency situation.

Purchased 2009 toyota tacoma crewcab in july 2009.i immediately began to notice when driving that the transmission gearing was not correct.when decelerating to make a turn or after coming to complete stop followed by acceleration, the transmission slips and struggles to find the correct gear for the speed the vehicle is traveling.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While driving 70 mph on a hill with the cruise control activated, the vehicle changed gears and the rpms increased rapidly. The failure has occurred approximately 20 times. The dealer was contacted, test drove the vehicle and duplicated the failure; yet, they said that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. No repairs were made to the vehicle. The failure mileage was 6000 and the current mileage was 17311. Updated 03/19/2010. *ljthe consumer stated the transmission down shifted into second gear.updated 07/19/10

2009 toyota tacoma 4x4 crew pickup truck with auto transmission and v6 engine accelerated unexpectedly to over 80 mph, then later on the same trip it happened again.i was on a long straight stretch of interstate the second time so i allowed the truck to accelerate to approximately 95 mph at which time i stopped the truck again.the first time it happened, i had disengaged the cruise control due to a slower car in front of me and when i engaged the cruise control resume feature the truck accelerated 15 mph past the preset speed at which time i turned off the cruise control and regained control of the truck.the second time that it happened the truck was again in cruise control mode and was going up a long hill.when the cruise control shifted the transmission down and accelerated to maintain set speed the truck continued to accelerate past 95 mph and was only stopped by turning off the cruise control again.i allowed the truck to get to that speed to see if it would discontinue acceleratingbut chickened out at 95 mph because it is after all a truck.i took the truck to the selling dealer, he tried to make it happen again with no success (told me he would have to replace the cruise control unit but could not do that unless he could duplicate the problem because it is a very expensive change out) and it has not happened but one more time.4 things seem to be common:1.the cruise is turned on.2.the vehicle is accelerating when the problem starts.3.the transmission has automatically downshifted.4.the problem is halted by turning off the cruise control.i had the dealer document the problem since he would not fix it.i hope this info helps in your continuing investigation of the problems that toyota seems to be having.i am not a disgruntled customer,i have purchased a 2010 corolla from the same dealer since the incidents.

Continual problem. Vehicle transmission slips/disengages during or prior to acceleration, primarily after turning a corner. As a result the engine revs and then the transmission engages causing vehicle to lurch/surge sometimes uncontrollably. "shift logic" control was reset by dealer on 03/23/09 but did not correct situation. Problem has existedsince vehicle purchase03/02/09. Vehicle has 470 miles.

I drive a 2009 toyota tacoma.the transmission hesitates/sticks when the driver accelerates after de-accelerating.this occurs when the truck slows to a speed below 15-20 mph, especially when turning a corner or yielding.the driver is pushing the accelerator, trying to get out of harms way of other traffic and the transmission is sticking and revving up; not wanting to kick in and go.toyota claims this is normal.this is not normal - it is a safety hazard.

Transmission slips, engine races and goes into gear.sporadic and unreliable actions, sometimes causes wheel spin.manufacturer claims all new vehicles perform this way and refuses to fix.independent mechanic verified my concern and stated it is a safety hazard.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma.the contact stated that the transmission slipped between first and second gear and also lunged forward at times.the vehicle lunged forward and almost caused her to hit pedestrians and other vehicles.the failure was intermittent.the vehicle was takento a dealeron two occasions.a technician stated that it was a characteristic of the vehicle and that there was nothing that they would be able to do. The manufacturer backed up the dealer's explanation. The current mileage was approximately 2,600. The failure mileage was 161. Bl

'09 toyota tacoma.transmission shifts erratically at slower speeds.drops into first gear and lurches when turning a corner.truck transmission feels out of control at apex of turn in an intersection. Not safe for foot traffic or other vehicles in the intersection. Dealership says transmission is ok.many other complaints about this problem on edmonds.com forum.toyota will not acknowledge the problem.

Transmission slips going from 1st to 2nd gear, this problem occurs everytime i accelerate.

I purchased a new toyota tacoma sr5 pickup 8/27/09.immediately i noticed a problem when i slowed down at speed bumps and to turn corners and then started to accelerate.the vehicle would hesitate then surge forward.i can stop the hesitation somewhat by very lightly pressing the accelerator after i slow down and then slowly accelerating.if i forget to very lightly accelerate, the vehicle will surge forward following the hesitation.one time this surge as i turned a corner almost took me into oncoming traffic.i attempted to resolve the issue with service representatives locally who told me the transmission was operating normally.i filed a complaint with toyota, was given a case number and was told by their complaint center that it was toyota's position that the transmission is operating normally.i feel that this tendency, which has been documented by numerous other owners at online sites such as edmunds.com, is a safety hazard that should be remedied in a recall.this situation occurs every time the vehicle is driven and requires very careful concentration to avoid a sudden and potentially unsafe surge in speed.nothing has been done to correct this issue and no response other than to deny my complaint has been taken.

Automatic transmission fails to engage upon accelerating out of a turn or after coasting down a hill. The rpms race but transmission does not engage unless accelerator is released and vehicle slows. In a pullout situation, this could be hazardous with oncoming traffic.

The transmissionin2009 tacoma4wd v6does not shift down smoothly as the truck slows down into a turn andbegins to accelerate out of a turn or in a straight away. The issue is pronounced in speeds of 35 mph and less . There seem to be a delay in responsewhen accelerating,. Until the transmission responds and the truck lurks forward . I checked with the toyota dealer , and the dealer does not think there is a problem . I checked toyota forums and found out numerous complaints about the same issue that i have . There is for sure a problem with the transmission or the software. My truck has only 2700 miles on it . All the complaints i read regarding this issue are low mileage trucksand it seems to be affecting the 2009 model.

The problem with the transmission is when i slow down to go around a curve or decelerate for any reason it does a hard down shift and then when i proceed to press the accelerator the truck acts like it is searching for what gear it should be in, at the same time the rpm is increasing (engine starts to race) and finally the transmission lurches forward and goes into gear. If you are in heavy traffic or crossing a busy highway this is very unnerving and in my opinion a safety issue and an accident just waiting to happen. I have taken my truckto the dealer twice and was told that there was nothing wrong with it. I was told that it was new technology and that i had to get used to it.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the foot rest next to the clutch snapped and detached from the vehicle. The piece that came off, fell behind the her foot, causing a disruption in operating the vehicle properly. The dealer was notified and informed the contact that they could provide no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 19,200. Updated 07/17/12*lj

2009 toyota tacoma gas pedal stuck on freeway on our 16 year old son. We had taught him from seeing toyota on the news to put it in neutral and get to the side of the road, which he did successfully. The truck was towed to thousand oaks toyota, they stated nothing was wrong and asked for my son to "drive it with a technician and try to replicate the problem". We sold it back to them, lost $8500 dollars, the dealer was unhelpful and other imho rude and toyota corporate 800 number didn't answer after 5 attempts and 3 hours on the phone. We are extremely upset about this.

2009 tacoma 4 cyl. 5 speed manual trans 4 x4. Clutch started slipping at 5000 miles, at 15,000 slipping badly. Brought to dealer who refused to recognize the problem as a warranty issue. Dealer wanted authorization for repair costs of $480 -$1000 before they would disassemble and inspect the vehicle to determine if a defect exists.dealer is looking for a blank check, only to call the defect a wear issue and charge customer for repair rather than accept a lower warranty reimbursement from toyota.driver has had 4 previous toyotas and all had manual transmissions . Vehicles logged between 161,000 and 191,000 miles and never needed a clutch replacement.

In december of 2008, i purchased a brand new 2009 toyota tacoma from harr toyota for about $30,000.this truck was a 4x4 off road, and came with all of the extra options that could be offered.the truck included a 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and a lifetime power train warranty.since i travel often for work, the truck would remain garaged for the next few months, away from the elements of the winter.in july, after returning from a business trip, i started to notice that on the highway, the truck had an unusual odor, and when the gas pedal was applied, the smell would get worse.i brought the truck in to be looked at by harr toyota service department, where the transmission was immediately refused to be covered under warranty due to 'corrosion.'historically, toyota has had many issues with corrosion and the immediate refusal for coverage shocked me.they claimed that the truck appeared to 'have been driven through a body of salt water' ' coincidentally on the transmission only.after repeated attempts to get toyota corporate to review my case, they claimed that they came to see the truck, and denied coverage.as my research showed, they had not actually come down, and had just spoken to the dealership on the phone.on the next attempt at a toyota inspection for coverage, it was determined that i had to pay $441.00 for them to take the transmission down, and then coverage was once again denied..after numerous calls, and insulting conversations with demeaning and sarcastic customer care representatives, i have given up and feel that toyota may have gotten the best of me.

Seatbelt inertia reel locks up under normal (non emergency) driving maneuvers, such as normal stops, low speed curves, etc.seat belt will not unlock, thereby pinning driver to seat.driver is trapped in seat for several moments until seatbelt decides to release.this is a problem because, while pinned to seat, driver cannot lean forward to look out windows and mirrors--which often need to be done quickly to maintain situational awareness.dealer refuses to acknowledge or fix problem.

I have an '09 toyota tacoma extra cab. When i exit the vehicle the seat belt gets caught on my shoulder and twists in such a way as to not retract properly. If i then open the rear door, the belt will always get trapped by the bottom of the rear door when i close it. Since the belt is not in the proper place and not secured by the proper anchor point i feel that in the event of an accident the seat belt will not be able to hold my hips in the seat and result in my sliding under the belt.on more than one occasion i have had to break hard to avoid in-attentive drivers and felt the belt suddenly go slack as i was sliding forward in my seat. I mentioned this to my local dealer, showed him the problem and his only reply was "seems to be a bad design".is this the best they can do; call it a design flaw?this has happened more than once, today included.

Today, 04/12/14, at around 11:55 a.m., i had my fourth experience of unintended acceleration in my 2009 toyota tacoma.the first two incidents i had not reported.the third incident i did report to toyota, they examined my truck and found nothing they thought would cause the acceleration.today, i was approaching a busy intersection during a street festival in the downtown section of my home town.my truck did not stop when i pressed the brake, but the engine revved and the tires squealed twice as i tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle.it carried me through the intersection - if it had been occupied, i don't know if i would have been able to steer away from pedestrians, as the street was narrow and it all happened very fast.as soon as i had control of the truck, i pulled over to check the rug.the rug was hooked into its hole, a good 3 inches from the accelerator, and could not be moved by hand.i am now afraid to drive my truck, and am grateful to god that no one was hurt or killed.i had a passenger with me who witnessed this. 8/4/14 the left rear spring broke severing the brake line, leaving her with no ability to stop the truck.7/12/13 the right rear spring was found to be broken.both the toyota dealer and the shop that fixed the springs told me that this was very common in these trucks.had my daughter lost her brakes ten minutes earlier, she would have been on the interstate and the results could have been tragic.. Tl-the contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 mph, the brakes failed to respond without causing the contact to crash. The specifics of the crash were unavailable. The air bags did not deploy. The contact mentioned that the failure occurred on multiple occasions prior to the crash. A police report was filed and there were not injuries reported. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000. Djr

I bought this vehicle used from a dealer in jan second with 155185 miles i let the dealer know about the brakes were to hard we bought the truck and on thursday 1/12/17 my wife took the truck to work that evening after getting home she told me that the brake pedal went to the floor so i took it to my repair shop on 1/13/17 to check it out they put the computer on to see what was going on they told me it was the abs unit i also lost the brakes taking it to the repair shop had to pull off the road than went real slow and pulled it into their shop also there was no warranty with the truck the warranty they had was to high so now its going to cost me over 3000 dollars cause the whole unit must replaced i just needed to know and you know if there was any other complaints or problems with that year and model i have had 6 toyota vehicles and never had this to happen thank you oh yes this was on a city road going straight and in motion.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated independently without warning. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who stated that the front brake pads and front brake rotors needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000. The current mileage was 66,000.

I was coming into a right handed corner on dry pavement doing 45mph (less than the suggested speed for the corner).as i let off the throttle and turned into the corner the vehicles stability control kicked in causing the truck to go straight.i had to fight against the steering wheel and managed to overpower the stability control but by then i was in the on-coming lane.

A broken leaf spring cut my brake line and my brakes stopped working with my 8 year old child in the truck.i had already replaced a leaf spring on the other side.this could have caused a very serious accident, luckily the brakes still had some fluid in them when i realized there was an issue.the truck had to be towed to the dealership for repair.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the brake pedal became spongy, causing an increase in stopping distance. In addition, the contact stated that the accelerator and brake pedals were too close in proximity and was causing the contact to erroneously depress the accelerator pedal when attempting to engage the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the technician did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was performing as designed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 5 and the current mileage was 2,800.

While the vehicle was being serviced by a local garage the mechanic noticed that one of the leafs (the middle leaf) in the drivers side leaf spring stack had broken, rotated inwards (away from the tire) and had nearly abraded through one of the hydraulic brake lines. If the line had severed then 50% of the vehicles braking would not be operational. This could lead to excessive stopping distances and could be fatal!detailed pictures available upon request.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal approaching a stop sign, he had to pump the brake pedal each time to bring the vehicle to a stop. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to toyota of fayetteville (1352 w showroom dr, fayetteville, ar 72704) where the brake master cylinder was replaced however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle operated as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 176,000.

Breaks failed at red light on state highway...pedal went to the floor then back breaks slowed truck to a stop...rusted brake line on front left...right brake line also looking to break from rust in the future...not rubber coating on break lines like other lines

When changing direction of travel such as forward to reverse the brakes make a loud clank. Took to dealership multiple times and they stated the brake pad pins are actually hitting the rotors, that this is a known issue and there is no fix yet. My concern if there is no fix then how long will it take for these small pins to break causing me to loose critical breaking. The breaking system is one of the most critical parts of an automobile and i have kids in my vehicle. Why is this not a major concern to toyota?

My concern involves the vacuum braking system on my 2009 toyota tacoma double cab.the brakes are very inconsistent and at times the rpm's increase while braking.sometimes they are very 'sticky' and more often it takes considerable force on the brake pedal to stop.i've informed kerry toyota of florence, ky of my concerns multiple times with no resolution.this is an on-going problem that has not gotten better with time.also, i've had several issues regarding hesitation when pressing on the accelerator.it was taken in to the dealer and i was told nothing was wrong.

I started my truck, outside temperature 22, pulled it into my garage and pressed on the brake to ease forward and the truck would not stop.i pressed as hard as i could on the brake but the truck continued forward and hit the front wall of the garage.it felt like it was trying to continue driving forward against the garage wall.i placed it into park and after calming down backed it off the wall.

Hi and low brake pedal, hard to tell how to stop and have ran it a bolder and a pickup with small damage.

I own a 2009 toyota tacoma pre runner double cab. The brakes are very soft and become softer when driven. They only catch when pushed all the way to the floor. I'm very cautious when i drive the vehicle, spending most of my time judging distance. I'm afraid this method used to operate this vehicle will fail me soon.

Brake pedal goes to the floor with out stopping, had it to the dealer three times with out a permanent fix.

Braking inconsistency, usually in stop and go or unexpected traffic stops, say at traffic lights and intersections. Occasionally the efficiency of the brakes varies, usually causing concern that one might / will not be able to stop short of a collision. Ie near misses. This condition is experienced even on dry excellent road surfaces in normal weather conditions. Surprise, longer than expected stopping distances, questioning if all the brakes are functioning or if abs is cutting in prematurely. Occasional long rollouts stops and a couple of experiences where i had to alter heading to almost pass up along side the vehicle ahead, during a freeway stop and go, panic stop has made me suspect that there might be a relationship with the axle-wrap (tacoma) phenomenon. Could the excessive brake bias caused rotation of the rear axle housing and abs sensors be imparting a premature false, impending wheel lockup signal, to the abs computer to unnecessarily bypass fluid under pressure back to the reservoir and thus not maintain full brake pressure to all four brakes/wheels during medium to heavy braking on good road conditions? not all stops produce bumping (axlewrap) and only on occasion is reduced braking a major factor, however they do occur and usually when you are not expecting it. Toyota doesn't seem to have a solution to the axle-wrap recurring discrepancy. Dealerships seem to believe that if there was a serious problem then toyota would tell them about it? unusual brake shoe wear patterns exist. On subject vehicle the rear shoes at last inspection appeared to be about half worn away and the front disc pads were relatively little worn and one could expect that the backs would need changing two to three times relative to the front discs once. This may support the theory that a severe brake bias exists and could be due to a malfunctioning abs system? technicians from toyota have driven the vehicle and have not recommended any solutions or corrective maintenance.5/10 - 5/11.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. When he attempted to apply the brakes, the brake pedal would become stiff.this condition caused him to increase his stopping distances.on one occasion the brake pedal fell to the floor, which disabled him from pushing the pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection.the technician could not provide a remedy because he could not duplicate the failure.the current and failure mileages were 55000.

S10 appropriate-letter from re concerns about the brake pedal in his 2009 toyota tacoma pickup truck.*tgwthe consumer stated he noticed the brake pedal almost went to the floor board. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for an inspection, but they were unable to find anything wrong it.

I have a 2009 toyota tacoma double cab pre runner. The brakes are spongy and become even softer when driven. The brake pedal slowly loses height, sinking towards the floor. Stopping distance becomes unpredictable and the vehicle becomes more difficult to stop. I've complained to the dealer several times, and filed numerous complaints with you guys. Will you please help me resolve my braking issue.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that when depressing the brake pedal, it would feel spongy and would not engage fully. The approximate failure mileage was 15 mph. The brakes would fall on the floor board. In order to get the brakes to engage, he had to pump the brake pedal several times. The dealer could not locate any failures in the braking system. The dealer stated that the brakes were operating as designed and the contact would have to get comfortable with the braking system. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 8,000 and the current mileage was unknown.

Brake pedal goes all the way to the floor sometimes. If you pump it then it is ok.

The contact owns 2009 toyota tacoma.the contact was driving approximately 20 mph on snow covered road conditions; proceeding to make a turn.the driver applied pressure to the brake system.the vehicle began to skid and steered into one direction uncontrollably.the vehicle bounced off a curb.the driver was able to gain control and resumed normal operation.there was a one time failure occurrence.the failure mileage was 27,000.

This vehicle has what i consider to be a break problem. The pressure and length of pedal depression required to stop the vehicle is dangerous. I have to depress the pedal to the floor in order to stop under average driving conditions. It actually feels as though the pedal has not fully engaged the braking system when completely depressed. The length of travel in the pedal from the point where breaks initially engage and completely stops is excessive and could cause an accident. I have taken the vehicle in to toyota for service and they have indicated that the breaks are within toyota specifications and do not require service.

Brake pedal low or high some times , what ever it feels like. Been in to fisher toyota four times with no lasting fix, last time the factory rep said that this is standard and no trouble. I have all most wrecked more then one time as you never know how hard to push down to stop.

A some times low brake pedal, never takes hold at the same hight. Some times as high as just a 1/2 inch. The next time below the throtle by an inch. I have hit a pick up in the rear and a boulder. The dealer told me this is normal. Who do i belive.

The brakes on my 2009 toyota double cab are very spongy and down right scary. After several minutes of driving the brakes become very soft, the height of the pedal decreases and the vehicle pulls to the left or right before it finally comes to a resting stop. The vehicle stops only when the brake pedal is pushed inches away from the floor. The vehicle is very difficult to stop when loaded with cargo or traveling down hill. Sometimes when the vehicle is stopped it lunges forward even when the brakes are applied. I've been in law enforcement for 15 years or more which has allowed me to participate in numerous driving courses. I've also been driving since the age of sixteen, during that time i've owned many cars and trucks including toyota. My tacoma has the worse brakes of any vehicle i have ever driven. My driving experience has allowed me to avoid numerous accidents that my tacoma has presented. I'm afraid my tacoma will present me with a situation in which my skills want matter.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact depressed the brakes and the entire brake pedal fractured from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the brake pedal was replaced due to a bad weld. There were no prior warnings of the failure. The failure mileage was 2,200 and the current mileage was 2,800.

Vehicle has 91k mileage 4x4 all highway miles. Backed out of my driveway and could not turn wheel. Checked fluid but it was fine. Attempted again and got on local road only to find truck uncontrollable at any speed. Saw another complaint on this after i got vehicle towed back to my house and decided to file complaint. My truck never had an issue like this before now. It is definitely unsafe to drive and toyota appears to have other tacoma owners with the same issue that could be fatal if it happens when driving at 65 mph let alone at slower speeds on curves. I will not let my family drive the truck because the steering is so unreliable. Please let me know if toyota will repair this under a recall or other camps in.vin is [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Steering was very stiff and steering wheel would not return after cornering causing the truck to continue in the wrong direction. The steering is stiffer in some positions than in others.

Steering is stiff and jerky causing driving concerns at all speeds. Problem is intermittent making it an issue as can occur at any time. Not power steering related.

Experienced difficulty steering, checked and found power steering fluid to be low, with no evidence of leaks.problem continued and got worse when the vehicle was warm, went to mechanic an diagnosis was failed steering rack, fluid had collected in the rubber boot ends.my mechanic has seen this numerous times with toyotas (as he has one himself).corrosion of the metal was cause due to lack of protection from the elements.toyota saved s few dollars at the expense of safety.no recall yet but there should be, steering being an essential component of driving.

New brunswick canadabought the 2009 toyota tachoma4x4 extended cab-off road truck last may 2-16 at saint john toyota and shortly after noticed that some times the steering would get stiffand it felt like manual steering. I took it back to the dealership and was told that there was noting wrong. When on the highway and coming to a turn i grip the wheel with 2 hands and back of on the gas. In march i had the front shaft changed and on april 7th i had a new rack and pinion and pressure line from steering pump and steel lines on the pump replaced it cost me $1,200.00. I drove about 20 kilometers and the steering worked great and i shut it off and when i started home it went stiff again. I'm have been afraid that if seizes up i'll be off the road or have a head on collision.the day i bought the truck i was informed by a toyota employee that they had just received a recallon the rear leaf springs and they replaced them that day.if you are not the first owner does anyone from toyota contact you?

I was going into a turn all of a sudden the steering got very stiff i had a hard time steering the truck. I almost hit a guardrail. Had a mechanic check the truck. He found out the universal joint on the steering was very stiff. He was surprised toyota has no boot covering this like gm does. He clean the universal and covered with a grease. Now when the stiffens comes back i spray with a penetrating oil then re-grease the steering universal. I have done a google search and this has been an ongoing problem with toyota. I am surprised their is no recall or any major accidents yet.

Steering is getting stiff, especially at lower speeds, tighter turns. Caused by corrosion getting into the u joint of the lower intermediate steering shaft. Poor design, does not protect from weather / road conditions.

Steering is locking up when i turn very dangerous!!! should be a recall before someone is killed!!!!

The universal joint on the intermediate shaft became corroded, causing the joint to bind and cause steering to become extremely stiff.

Steering , i bought a new 2009 tacoma with the platnum warranty and the steering is now not working, i feel that this is unsafe and is difficult to drive. I called the number to tell them that i brought it to a dealer(vanderstyne toyota rochester ny) to see what the problem was and that i was told i needed to pay 130.00 for diagnostic fees to see what the problem was with it and that they would not even look at it to see what the problem is.this vehicle does not seem safe to drive.i see there are many recalls on toyota steering problems and i am forced to contact an attorney to see if this is legal action

After purchasing the vehicle, in sept 2011, i had my truck for only a few weeks and i was driving and hit a small bump and heard as well as felt a loud thump coming from the steering column area, i also noticed my bed was moving a little as well. I brought the truck into the dealership as soon as i heard the issue, but the dealership said they didn't hear or feel anything. Now when i hit any bump (big/small) i can literally see the bed on my truck move in my side mirrors, the issues are progressing and my truck is still under warranty and i want these issues fixed asap, esp since its still under warranty . Extremely harsh ride, and feeling unsafe to drive, needs to be fixed asap.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that he was driving 40 mph and lost control of the vehicle, causing him to crash into a guard rail. The steering wheel broke off before the air bag deployed. The contact suffered head injuries and was the only occupant in the vehicle. He was taken to the hospital by another person. The police were notified and a report was available if needed. The vehicle was then towed to an auto body shop. The insurance company was also notified. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 28,000.

The welds lower control arm mount on the driver side failed when i applied the brakes at high speed and almost caused an accident and almost completely removed my wheel and the lower control arm from the car.

Steering becomes intermittently 'stiff'.complaint has been documented many times by owners on forums and other on-line sites.apparently this is a design issue that allows the lower steering joint to suffer accelerated corroded by normal use.dealers and toyota do not acknowledge it is a manufacturing issue that can cause/create safety issues with the vehicle.problem occurs intermittently at any speed of can also occur when attempting to turn steering wheel when vehicle is stopped.problem is intermittent and various degrees of severity.

Steering very stiff, does not return to center, locks up, fails to maintain direction.the universal joint on the steering column-steering gear is not protected from the elements (road salt, water, etc.) and has seized, causing the steering to lock up and leading to a minor accident.

Stiff steering.steering shaft knuckle is exposed and corrodes resulting in the stiff steering.starts outs as intermittent.occurs at any speed, turning right or left, all environmental conditions.very unsafe.widely known issue

Power steering assist seemed intermittent.the power steering lower shaft at the universal joint has become corroded making steering difficult (to overcome the corrosion) as well as dangerous when further corrosion leads to steering failure.many on-line forums make note of this problem. It appears to be a systematic design flaw that can lead to dangerous consequences.imagine losing steering control at high speed.since toyota is addressing frame rust for the same year, with either a replacement frame or a protective coating, why isn't this of equal concern on some kind of recall.it looks like i've addressed the issue with a $600 repair to protect my safety, however as this is a known problem, why is it not a voluntary or mandatory recall to address this dangerous condition.this condition started the day after the truck was returned to me after getting the frame undercoating.this condition happens at any speed, left or right turns, when cold or warmed up.it is most notable when cold at slow speed (first started up, turning around in the driveway).

Had just entered my driveway and tacoma cabin suddenly filled with heavy smoke and smell of something burning. Stopped vehicle, set brake and got away from it after opening both doors. Short time later opened hood to try and determine what had gone wrong expecting s radiator hose leak. After examining fluids, only the power steering tank was empty and passenger side of engine smelled like cabin did. Had tacoma towed to dealer to determine what was wrong. Their mechanic found massive corrosion of the power steering rack and lines were split/rotten blowing power steering fluid onto manifold and lower steering shaft freeing up. They had to replace power steering rack, lines, outter tie rods and steering shaft. Then did an alignment. Btw this tacoma had a frame replacement about a year ago. I firmly believe power steering rack could have been stressed during that time. Also they should have detected the corrosion problem then. The mechanic and service advisorshowed me what was left left of psr...severe corrosion had left pieces of it flaking off. I'm not having much success getting toyota to cover parts$$$ replacement and i am a 4 time buyer of toyota vehicles since 1980's. If this had happened at highway speed i wouldn't be writing this.

Lack of alignment during toyota safety recall e02 / nhtsa recall id 14v 604i am concerned with the lack of vehicle alignment as an included part of e02 post replacement of the rear spring packs.when the rear springs are removed from the vehicle, the rear axle often shifts such that is it no longer in the same position as it was previously installed.thus the vehicle is no longer properly aligned, as front toe is set based on the thrust angle of the rear axle.the thrust angle is derivative of the alignment of the axle relative to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, and creates a moment about the yaw axis of the vehicle.re-alignment of the front of the vehicle provides corrective measure by setting front wheel toe to account for the position of the rear axle, thus ensuring the vehicle tracks correctly and is stable during dynamic maneuvers.when the tacoma first entered the servicing dealer it was confirmed to be correctly aligned.however, the pre-alignment numbers on the hunter expressalign sheet show that the rear axle position after performing e02 has shifted -0.15 [iso] about its vertical axis relative to the position prior to rear spring replacement.failure to have the tacoma realigned would have resulted in the need to counter-steer the vehicle to maintain a straight trajectory during normal operation. It is unacceptable that the customer should be expected to bear the burden of cost for the alignment, when it is necessitated by the corrective actions prescribed by toyota during e02.failure to re-align vehicles becomes a safety concern, namely due to uneven tire wear and the potential for instability of the vehicle due to misaligned axles causing the vehicle to increase tendencies to over-steer.i am disappointed in toyota's apparent disregard for owner safety and feel this is an issue that should be addressed with urgency.

Power steering goes out intermittently. Highway or back roads make no difference. Turning the wheel suddenly gets stiff, then can slip back into power steering and turn very quickly.

Steering shaft binding up while turning. There are no grease fittings or boot on universal joints

In addition to a rusted frame, my 2009 tacoma has1.a rusty air condition system with rusted components.2.a rusted u joint for steering that was extremely difficult & expensive to replace.3.a rusted power steering component with a hole in bottom. It can't be fixed until the frame is replaced. I can't safely drive the vehicle.4.a rusted 4-wheel drive actuator ' to be replaced. It doesn't g into 4 wheel drive.5.brake line rusted thru. Will these repairs be covered by toyota as well during the frame replacement?

Tacoma corrosion issue - metal high pressure tube on rack and pinion unit developed a hole draining the power steering system of fluid resulting in difficulty controlling the vehicle.

Steering gearbox seal failure requiring replacement of the rack and pinion.

It juss started a week or so ago.the power steering is intermittent goin out.it's very scary.i'm not sure what the problem is but it gets stiff like there's no power steering. Than it will come back.

Steering shaft bound up this am and i almost killed myself and another persn in the other car called dealer he said it is common problem and they change them daily. He said toyota is aware but feels its not a problem vehicle was in motion when it happened as i was turning it locked up . This is a dangerous situation and idealer knew exactly what was wrong. I went online and typed in tacoma steering binds and there are a lot of complaints. The service manager told me the ujoint og the steering shaft is exposed to all the elements and it is as common as the toyota rusty frame recall.. Someone is going to get killed with this problem.

Intermediate steering shaft problem seems like the power steering stops working.the problem seems to be less when there is weight in back of truck.

The lower steering linkage u joint (intermediate steering shaft) failed due to simple rust.it is unprotected and open to the elements and the failure nearly caused an accident.the symptoms were extreme hard steering and almost caused me to drive off the road going around a corner.this was a sudden issue, not a gradual problem and occurred at all driving speeds.my vehicle only had 100,000 miles on it.

Steering shaft joint failed (pn 45203-04021), causing loss of control of steering/ binding steering

Vehicle steering is unsafe, the steering wheel sometimes doesn't return back to center on turns and steers very hard . When i inspected the vehicle the universal joint on the steering shaft is binding. The part is called intermediate steering shaft #2. This is very dangerousdue to unpredictable steering and also if it fails at a high rate of speed. There should be a safety recall.

Front end wobbles. Dealer has tried to fix this at least 3 times.

Problem with turning left and right, very stiff, like there was a problem with the power steering. Brought it to my mechanic, he had to install the lower steering shaft. He called are local dealer for the part, they said it is a common problem, they just sold 3 that day. My question is if this is a common problem, why isn't toyota talking care of this!this is a safety issue!this ended up costing me $400.very unfair, there needs to be a recall before someone gets hurt.

Steering shaftknuckle is exposed and corrodes resulting in stiff steering. Starts out intermittent then gets realy hard to turn, truck has only 62269 miles on it and this is a comman problem with this vechice ,no recall and after repairvechile has to be realigned and at a total cost of $567.58 all work done

The mechanic diagnosed that the subframe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 50,500.

The frame had to be replaced by toyota due to excessive rust

Ihad a rusty frame recall which i took in on feb. 2018 and had they supposedly repaired this by rustproofing. Since then all the new rustproofing applied for this fix has deteriorated. This truck has only been driven less than 10,000 miles since that time and is housed in a garage.this recall ends on july 28th of 2020 and my dealer says the will do nothing.because no perforations are seen they will not help.i assumed that this was repaired correctly when it was done initially but have found that the job done was mainly cosmetic and the matter was not fixed.i am now asking for help to have this repair done properly.

The entire frame of the vehicle is rusted

The vehicle was taken to the dealer (joseph airport toyota in vandalia, ohio, 937-898-8060) where the technician offered to spraypaint over the rust, but the contact declined the offer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to do what the dealer recommended, stating that if the failure continued, the frame would be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

The rubber strip running fore - aft on the cab of the truck came off during driving. The rubber strip could have landed on the windshield of a fellow motorist and caused an accident. This could be an anomaly, however, the same thing happened to my son's toyota 2005 four runner. I recommend at least a cursory investigation.

Frame has excessive rust.vehicle was bought new in summer 2008, less than 3 years later the seams of the frame had substantial rust.frame is now covered in rust . When the toyota dealer was contacted their reply was ~there is no recall for your vehicle regarding this matter.i am aware of many other model years of tacoma being recalled for this problem.this is a safety hazard for the model year 2009 tacomas and that model year should be included in the recall.form requires a "when did this happen" date, a date of june 2011 was entered as the approximate date when the excessive rust was first noticed

The vehicle has an excessive frame rotten. The car was inspected by toyota dealer confirming the issue. The issueappeared the first week of august 2021.

Purchase new a 2009 toyota tacoma from toyota of scranton-vehicle final payment for our truck was oct 2012. The truck has not missed an appointment at toyota of scranton (they always maintained the vehicle). We took the truck for inspection at toyota of scranton in september (yearly inspection) the truck failed inspection with regards to rust spots at frame of truck. Toyota did not pass the truck for inspection and told us to go to a local welding company and have it welded "superior welding co."i have been in touch with corporate and manufacture regarding this issue. They are working on case. I fear for other motorist who may have it welded by others or not welded and it be unsafe on the highway/roads.the truck was at dealership when told of issue. Toyota recalled 2008 trucks for rusted frames (dana manufacture) - a toyota tacoma rusted frames lawsuit filed in arkansas. I have spoken to 14 people + 3 supervisors, it is now in the hands of a "field technician specialist". They told me the decision with now go outside the regional office.

The frame is covered by a recall.toyota is limiting it to certain states.i was in one of those states (maine). Toyota says the car must be registered in one of those states.my registration ended at the end of october.we know live in florida which is not covered.the frame was inspected by a toyota dealership in florida that said it needed to be treated for rust.(recall). But because my registration changed they are using it as a reason not to cover vehicle.i believe it is a safety issue and that they are using loopholes not to cover all the vehicles that should be covered.

The paint on my 2009 toyota tacoma started to fail about a year ago approx. March 2017. It started on the hood with slight cracking that led to peeling that led to it's current condition which is bare metal in large areas. The roof was the next area to have the paint fail and it is the same scenario as the hood. The rest of the truck is starting to fail but not as bad as the roof and hood. The paint color is dark charcoal. Rust spots have also started to form where there is bare metal. The truck has 66,000 miles on it. The truck is a florida vehicle and has never left the state.

Found a broken leaf on the rear suspension on the left hand side, it was the middle leaf not the main leaf. Must have happened in the last 2700 miles. Was under the truck at 65,000 and all was good. I do not load this truck, it can't take it. It is basically a passenger car with a cargo box, and thats how i use it. Called local dealer and was told there are no recalls or service letters. Called a local spring shop and when i gave them the make and model, they said they weren't surprised, they do a lot of single leafs on tacomas, and at a wide range of mileage. They have done replacements on vehicles from 18k-80k.

After hearing clunking noises in the rear end of the truck, an inspection revealed broken rear leaf springs. The springs were replaced by a local mechanic at a cost of nearly $1100. I consider the failure of the springs to be premature as i do not use the truck for heavy hauling. Research reveals that this is a common problem with this model truck.

I received a notice of recall over a year ago, but only got the actual recall notice about a month ago.i scheduled an appointment to have the rear leaf springs replaced at toyota of poway.when i arrived for the appointment i was told they did not have the recall parts!i called the toyota customer experience line and despite what the recall letter said, i was told that the dealershipwould not have the parts and that the dealership would only do an inspection first.i am complaining because of the in accurate instructions in the recall letter and because the local dealership apparently has no idea how to remedy the issue.

At 59,500 miles the left front wheel bearing started making a lot of noise and vibration and noticeably altered the steering.the wheel bearing was replaced under warranty. Now at 90,000 miles the bearing is faulty again and toyota refuses to fix it again.i took it to my mechanic who told me that he sees a lot of failed wheel bearings on the tacomas.a failed bearing can result in the wheel locking up or falling off at highway speeds.

Approximately 2 years ago, i found that the leaf springs on my 09 toyota tacoma had broken so i had them replaced. If memory serves me correctly i had them replaced a second time for the same issue. Since then i have been contacted by toyota regarding a recall on the 09 tacoma leaf springs. Researching the internet i found that toyota had announced in november of 2014 that there was a problem, that they would be seeking a solution and notifying owners. Here it is august 2015 and they still have not found a solution for this very simple problem and i am in the same boat as i was months ago. Each time i contact toyota i am told that they are working on a solution almost a year later.

September 29, 2014 toyota motors informed nhtsa of plans to conduct a voluntary recall of the toyota pre-runner pickup trucks.the problem is that the leaf spring is defective and could fracture due to corrosion and stress.i have a leaf spring that is not fractured or cracked but is making a lot of strange noises and my mechanic says the leaf spring on one side is defective.i have taken it to my dealer twice and they refuse to replace it because it is not cracked.i have called toyota customer service twice also and they refuse to rectify the problem.how long is it going to take toyota to deal with this recall or are they waiting for a few people to die.why can't they be proactive instead of reactive after people are injured.

Traveling down rough country dirt roads, then you need to be sure your vehicle is going to stand up to the test of living in the west.are you at the nhtsa going to do anything about forcing toyota to take action on their vehicles, or sit around and do nothing?it has now been over 2 years since this recall was started and still nothing is being done about it.please respond to my questions and let me know what you plan on doing!!!!!!i did receive a 2nd notice regarding the recall from toyota, saying they would have the remedy in place in the early part of 2016, but now it is almost september (2 years) and still nothing is done about the rear leaf springs.please advise!!!!!!

My 2009 toyota tacoma has been under recall for the rear leaf springs since 2014. I have called the dealership monthly to find out if/when the repairs are going to begin! there is still no resolution to this safety issue on this vehicle! this is unacceptable!

Noticed a loud rattle in the rear of vehicle.

Updated 08-20-14 .updated 08/27/2014

I heard a rattling noise from the right rear of the truck while driving on a bumpy side road.i investigated and discovered the bottom leaf spring had broken in half.doing some online research i discovered that this is a very common problem with tacoma's.i contacted the dealer and it is not a covered item (no tbs) and it would cost over $1800.i went to my local mechanic which saved me $700.during the repair it was discovered that both right and left were broken.my mechanic informed me that this is a very common problem; that toyota lengthened the springs to soften the ride, as a result compromised the strength. The leaf springs have always squeaked just by getting in and out of the truck. There is a sticker on the door frame stating that the load rating has been reduced by 290 lbs for this vehicle, i wondered why now i know, cheap springs!

Nhtsa recall number 14vg-604i own a 2009 toyota tacoma. Currently there is a recall on my truck.nhtsa recall number 14vg-604. I took my truck into the toyota dealership to have the part replaced for the recall. Toyota stated they were unable to repair the parts for the recall because the truck has aftermarket parts on it. They stated that it would cost me an additional 160 forthe u-bolts to be replaced in order to repair the recall. I called and spoke with the national dot and toyota customer service, to see if they would be able to repair and replace all the parts needed at no cost to me but were unable to preform the repair.i am writing this complaint due to the fact of a safety concern.

Left rear leaf spring snapped while driving.

Toyota is not addressing the tacoma rear leaf spring safety recall in a reasonable time.i was notified of the leaf spring recall in the fall of 2014.in march of 2015 i took my 2009 tacoma to the dealer to investigate excessive noise coming from the rear of the truck. Dealer service department determined that one of the leaf springs had fractured and needed to be replaced per the safety recall.dealer ordered the replacement springs but was unable to provide a time when they would be available so the repair could be completed.after nearly a month, still waiting for parts.calls to both the dealer and toyota corporate to find out when the parts would be available have been fruitless.both state that the replacement leaf springs are unavailable and will not provide a date when they will be available.given the length of time that toyota has known about this safety issue, i find that this is lack of repair parts and addressing this safety issue is unacceptable especially for owners such as myself who are known to have fractured leaf springs.recommend that nhtsa investigate with toyota as to why this safety recall is not being addressed in a prompt manner.

Vehicle recall notification received as on date above and to date toyota has not notified me of any remedy.believe that this is an excessive wait time for toyota to get recall fix completed.

Driver's side rear bottom leaf spring failed in fatigue.the failed spring caused damage and deformation to the brake line.i consider this a premature life as this vehicle has not experienced towing or off road use.

No accident or breakage of rear leaf springs, but i was notified in 2014 of the recall notice and it is now 11/2015 and their is still no remedy!this is too long a period for a recall to be on hold, when i haul firewood, a boat, items to the landfill and grandkids and have to worry about a leaf spring breaking and causing an accident or injury to my family.toyota makes lots of money off of their vehicles and this should be top priority on their list and you can bet it will be the last toyota i buy.i'll go back to buying american made vehicles instead of imports!i guess that's what i get for buying a toyota!i do have a case # 1509 from toyota, but they still will not prepare a remedy, and i think this is bs...you took my money for the truck, now fix it in a timely manner and quit screwing us around.i can see there are lots of unhappy owners with this same issue from the complaints.

Front lower ball joints early signs of failure could lead to major accident.clunking sounds from front end.grease already leaking.fear of joint failure.

When my 2009 tacoma reached about 18,500 miles the rear spring started to squeak.you can hear it even getting in & out of the vehicle.if you put much weight in the back it will squat & lift the front end up.it even does poorly pulling an empty trailer.this is my 10th +toyota & i am very disappointed that this type of problem pops up & toyota won't do anything about it.i may just by a gmc next time.

At my state inspection i was told the front ball joints were very bad. I contacted the dealer and was told they were not under warranty, they would cost $800.00 to repair and they had not experienced this failure before at such low mileage. This year i took my truck in for inspection to find the rear leaf springs on both sides were broken. When i contacted the dealer i was again told it was not a warranty issue and they had not experienced it before. I asked to have the contact information for the toyota district representative, but was told they did not give that information out. I sent a complaint via email to toyota corporate and at this point have received not response. The local repair shops tell me they have repaired many of these trucks for these problems. The internet is awash with complaints regarding broken springs. I was lucky, i discovered the problem before the spring piece reached my rear tire. I believe this is a potentially very serious safety issue that the company is taking no responsibility to resolve.

I have been waiting for over 1 year to have the recalled leaf springs dealt with on my truck. In february 2015, my leaf spring broke, 6 months after the first and only recall notification letter.. My dealer had " at least a 6 month wait" for the part. My mechanic repaired it and i paid the bill. Toyota filed a case number and stated i would be reimbursed when the remedy recall was announced. After another 6 months, i have yet to hear anything from toyota or white river toyota.i spoke with my dealer today, and they "have no idea when the remedy will be available, waiting to hear from toyota headquarters". I spoke to toyota today and they could not give many information regarding reimbursement, when they would be able to fix the leaf spring, or the status of my case. I find it disturbing that a safery issue is taking over 14 months to resolve when it only involves manufacturing replacement springs. I also am angry that no one at toyota has any timetable on resolving the issue.

The technician diagnosed that the leaf springs fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the vin was included in nhtsa campaign: 14v604000 (suspension). The failure mileage was 123,000.

My 09 tacoma vibrated at certain speeds and slightly swerved going down the highway causing instability and lack of control. Also heard some clanking in the rear end. Upon examination the rear leaf springs in both sides were broken. According to the mechanic one spring was actually rubbing the tire . Toyota had numerous recallsfor tacoma rear leaf springs because they were breaking. However, when i called toyota they told me my vehicle came from a different plant and did not qualify. I never abused this vehicle no reason for this issue they should add this plant to the recall list to avoid accident and injury. I should disclose that ihad two bad wheel bearings as well which may have resulted from the stress caused by the leaf springs. Just don't know. However, not just a coincidence that both springs broke on a tacoma that is well known for this problem. Thank you

I began to drive my vehicle today and heard a strange clanking noise. I pulled over and upon inspection i found that one of the right rear leaf springs was broken. I have never had a load in the bed of the truck over 500lbs. I see that prior model year tacomas had a recall for this problem. The truck had the same part but the recall does not extend to 2009.

Received letter from toyota 2 years ago about leaf spring recall. At this point my leaf springs have weakened to the point of not being able to haul anything in the bed. Even driving down the interstate every bump or dip i hit in the road my truck now bottoms out. I contacted toyota on 1/18/2016 with a complaint about the weakened state of the springs and my concern that they may break at anytime and also the fact of what else will be weakened, wore out or broke by the time the recall is ready. I received an email several days later stating that the recall was not ready and apologized for my inconvenience and frustrations. I believe they have had ample enough time to manufacture the parts and start bringing them in for repair. I was told the recall would be ready in early 2016. We are now into march and i cannot go any longer with the weakened state of the springs. I have asked the dealers and they cannot even tell me any information on this problem. I have already filed a complaint with toyota about this issue and it is under file #1601210129. This has been an issue with my truck around the 50,000 mile mark and i have just chalked it up as parts becoming weak and wore out over time. I had plans to add a leaf to the rear suspension to bring the ride back to were it once was. Since the recall has came out i gave up that idea and have been waiting impatiently since. Like i said something needs to be done they have had ample enough time to correct this issue.

In 2013 our leafspring's broke and we had to replace them. Toyota stared a recall notice but had no solution in 2014. A year letter we received a notice they were still working on it. We requested a reimbursement for the money we paid out to have them repaired and they said no. Just recently they said we could submit all my paperwork for possible reimbursement. We submitted mechanics bill, canceled check and bank statement also current registration and title. I just received a letter telling me again that i needed to submit those items. I called and on the phone they admitted they had the paperwork i sent and they even went as far as calling the mechanic ( while i was on the line ) on to confirm he did the work and now they want a written statement from the mechanic on how my truck was acting when it came in for the repairs what parts and numbers he used along with his remedy and the outcome. This is on the bill i paid ( except the part #) i do not understand why they are asking me for all the paperwork again and neither do their employees i have spoken to. I believe toyota is just trying to get out of paying for the repairs on their recall. I still remember driving down the road and hearing this god awful noise, worse thana clunk. Took it to thetoyota dealer and they said they leaf spings were bad. I had them replaced at our local auto shop because they wanted almost half of what toyota wanted replace them. So far the replacements are working.

I contacted toyota on 8/10/16 to report a broken leaf spring (currently on a recall list).the rep was friendly, but i was told i had to go to a dealer to have it replaced.the transferred me to the dealer and then to the parts office who told me that it would take 6 weeks to get the part.one of the problems associated with this recall is that there is a chance that the broken leaf spring moves and hits the gas tank and causes a fire.when i asked if i could take it to a leaf spring replacement company, i was told that i could, but toyota may not reimburse me.then in the next breath, the rep tells me how important toyota puts safety.really?they want me to drive around for 6 weeks and take a chance in causing a fire in my vehicle instead of taking it to a knowledgeable repair company.

Toyota has notified me (nhtsa recall number: 14v604) on september 29, 2014 and again in september, 2015 concerning the rear suspension system of my tacoma toyota truck. I am very concerned that this safety recall 'fix' has gone on much too long. I have contacted my local dealer to see about this recall but they say they have not received the needed parts from toyota.i also called toyota hq and they too did not know when the remedy would be available. In the mean time my leaf springs occasionally make noises described by the dealer as a potential safety problem. My question: why is it taking toyota so long to repair what appears to be a simple problem? am i endangering my family and myself by continuing to drive my 2009 tacoma?

I was driving at approximately 35 mph on a suburban road. When i drove over any small bumps in the road, a loud metallic clinking sound could be heard issuing from the rear of the vehicle. An inspection revealed that the left leaf spring had broken and was smacking against the rear axle when the rear suspension was put in motion. It was mandatory that i replace the leaf springs on both sides of the vehicle in the interest of safety and drivability. The repair cost me $491 (i have the receipt); the incident was unnerving and caused considerable bother and inconvenience.

I took the vehicle in for the suspension recall repair. The dealer stated that upon inspection my vehicle has the proper parts.i find this hard to believe as this vehicle had a broken leaf spring when it was approx. 2 years old. If the problem is breaking leaf springs, then how can a vehicle under recall that had a prior broken leaf spring not be repaired?

I received the recall notice for this vehicle. I took the vehicle in for repair. The dealer said i had the proper springs on the vehicle and no repair was needed.i find this hard o believe sincerear leafspring broke on this vehicle when it was approx. 2 yrs. Old. How then could it have the proper springs?

The rear leaf springs broke on the tacoma, i had to pay for new, and was told they intend to replace the remaining when "they come in." for 2 years i have been waiting for the springs "to come in". They will supposedly reimburse me for the broken side ($300.00), when the new "come in". Really? 2 years? whats going on?

After purchasing the vehicle, in sept 2011, i had my truck for only a few weeks and i was driving and hit a small bump and heard as well as felt a loud thump coming from the steering column area, i also noticed my bed was moving a little as well. I brought the truck into the dealership as soon as i heard the issue, but the dealership said they didn't hear or feel anything. Now when i hit any bump (big/small) i can literally see the bed on my truck move in my side mirrors, the issues are progressing and my truck is still under warranty and i want these issues fixed asap, esp since its still under warranty . 2009 toyota tacoma.consumer writes in regards to vehicle passenger leaf spring cracked.the consumer stated the dealer did not follow through with the terms of the recall and only replaced the passenger leaf spring, when the driver side should have been replaced as well.since the driver's side was not replaced, it left the vehicle sitting in an awkward manner. The dealer claimed the would replace the driver side leaf spring. However, they only made the problem worse.

I have a 2009 toytoa tacoma with 26,000 miles, and the leaf suspension is failing.there are audible groans and creaks just getting in and out of the car, or if i put in loads as light as 50 pounds.further, the ride has become worse over bumps.toyota has issued tsbs for this issue in earlier models, but they have not addressed the problem, and there isn't a tsb for 2009.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact heard a rattling noise while driving. The vehicle was taken to a localmechanic who inspected the vehicle and stated the failure was within the rear axle right leaf spring near the gas line which was corroded and had broke in half. The manufacturer stated the failure was not a recall for the 2009 tacoma and would not assist with the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure andcurrent miles were 78,700.

The truck bottoms out at about half the payload capacity of 1,295 pounds.a 652lb atv caused the truck to bottom out.there is a tsb out for 2005-2008 models and toyota claims it has remedied the problem but the same exact parts are still in use on the 2009 models.

The rear springs started squeaking about 19,000 miles.when pulling a trailer vehicle sways badly.with 600 lbs of weight in bed, vehicle sits really low.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While driving approximately 10 mph, the brakes did not work. The brake pedal went to the floorboard momentarily and then started working again.

2009 toyota tacoma recall.the consumer stated toyota's solution was to attach the floor mat permanently and that the only way it could be removed would be cutting it out. The consumer stated that was not a solution in any way shape or form and was not acceptable.such a solution would require the owner to replace the floor mats on a regular basis as they could not be cleaned when permanently attached.the proper way to solve the problem would be to remove all the floor mats and carpet, install a single floor covering that would be permanently attach to the entire floor of the cab. In the area of the accelerator pedal there could be no irregularitiesthat would catch and hold the depressed pedal.

I purchased my 2009 tacoma in aug of 2015. I tried to contact http://www.toyota.com/recall to check on any recalls that my have effected my truck. I tried more than a dozen times to sign up, but when i inputed my vin#, the site would only show a spinning ball. I tried to call the phone number listed and it was always busy. After several months i stopped trying until recently this year (2016) .i see now that they have updated the site and i can now see my vin#. This is greatly disturbing because the recall which would have effected my truck had a sunset date of nov. 30, 2015. I have filed a complaint about faulty headlight assembly.

My keys keep falling out of the key socket... While driving on streets .. Has gone on for 2-3 years now... Also have, many times, taken the key out after parking itand not noticed that vehicle still running... The last time both problems occurred was yesterday.

This vehicle is 7 years old and 2 years ago the readout screen for the compass and temperature gauge failed!! i took it to the shop and they said toyota has had problems with the chip boards. Why hasn't this been recalled! i spent a whole lot of money to have a vehicle with these features and now it's not functioning! makes me mad!! get this component under recall, it's really expensive to replace! i would have filed a complaint sooner but didn't know about this site.

Frame has a lot of rust, which can be a safety hazard if it breaks. Dealer and toyota states that there is no active recalls.

Took vehicle to a repair shop. They informed me that the frame is severely rusted.

Pulling into a parking space at hy-vee grocery store in mount pleasant, ia at a low rate of speed(<5mph) my 09' toyota tacoma accelerated into a grocery cart stall. I had applied the brakes with no results and after a one second lull the truck accelerated quickly into the movable obstruction. I have had previous concerns about the rate of acceleration by the amount of pressure applied to the acceleratior. There have been times where light pressure accelerates the car at a faster rate and times where heavier pressure doesn't getenough response in acceleration. Floormats are secured down and no issues have been found by the dealership i had purchased it from.

I received a recall notice from toyota around september of last year. In this letter they said they would contact me about the accelerator problem with this vehicle. Now i am hearing about people with the accelerators sticking in the wide open position and other problems, so i don't know if i even want to drive this truck anymore. Should i park this truck until i hear from them? this is crazy.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign id number: 09v388000 (vehicle speed control:accelerator pedal) and the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs.one year later, the contact experienced an abnormal acceleration while shifting into drive with the brakes depressed. He was able to stop the acceleration failure by shifting into neutral and shutting off the vehicle. Once the vehicle was restarted, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure however, the dealer advised that he would be sending for an investigator to further inspect the vehicle.the manufacturer was made aware of the failure.the current and the failure mileages were 15,322.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while attempting to park and depressing the brakes, the vehicle abnormally accelerated and crashed into a pole. The contact stated that the brake and accelerator pedals were too close together and she has simultaneously depressed both pedals causing the abnormal acceleration. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileage was approximately 8,000.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact attempted to shift gear into neutral and the rpms suddenly increased to 4500.the vehicle is currently being diagnosed by the dealer and there were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 8636. Updated 1/4/10 the consumer stated he had the truck running in park while he retrieved his mail. When he returned to the truck, he put his foot on the brake pedal and proceeded to move the shift lever from park to drive in a downward motion. As soon as the shift lever entered neutral the motor began to race from 4,500 to 5,00 rpm's. While attempting to come to a stop on a highway exit ramp, when i applied firm pressure to the brake about half way down the ramp, the engine accelerated unexpectedly and the rear wheels on my truck began to spin and slip. Although the truck was slowing down it could not come to a complete stop and struck a stopped vehicle atthe end of the ramp at slow speed. With extreme pressure on the brake the truck remained stopped but the rear wheels continued to spin at a high rate. I shifted to neutral and turned off the ignition key. The truck is an automatic and was in 2 wheel drive and the auto speed control was not on. I checked the floor mats because i had previously received a safety recall interim notice and had previously made sure the mats were correctly installed. The all weather floor mat was correctly installed and secured to the 2 floor hooks, and was not on the accelerator pedal. When the ignition was turned back on the truck operated normally and has continued to do so, now about 2 weeks.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While driving in reverse at a very low speed, the vehicle surged backward resulting in a crash. There was no police report filed and no injuries reported. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop to have the body work performed. The vehicle was in the process of being examined for the failure. The failure and current mileages were approximately 18,000.

Truck surges forward after backing up and then driving forward or turning wheel from stopped position and then driving forward (i.e. After filling up with gas).

We were going to park the toyota tacoma truck in our garage and it all of a sudden accelerated ,increasing the speed which caused us to hit a tree and the neighbors cement wall. *cw

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While at a complete stop with the brake pedal depressed the vehicle accelerated independently and caused the contact to strike another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. There were no injuries. The vehicle was driven home. The contact stated that this was the third time the exact same failure occurred, causing him to strike other vehicles. Previously, the vehicle was taken to a dealer and the contact was informed that the failure occurred due to the floor mat. The accelerator pedal was cut down and the computer system was updated; however, the failure recurred. The failure mileage was 61,000. Updated 05/16/17*lj

Today i was on rt 50 in western fairfax county, va stopped and waiting to make a left hand turn onto centreville rd.all of a sudden my toyota tacoma 09 surged forward and gently hit the stopped full size truck in front of me.the gentlemen in the full size truck got out and saw no damage on his truck.i had some minor scratches on the front bumper and on the front license plate. No one was hurt so we did not report anything.i am concerned that there is a defect in my truck that causes this sudden surge.had someone walked in front of my truck when the surge occurred, someone could have been seriously injured.luckily no one was hurt.

I experienced a case of uncontrollable acceleration in my 2009 toyota tacoma.it occurred on feb 25, 2010.i started my vehicle in my garage normally.my foot is on the brake.i let it idle for a short while until the idle rate went under 1500 rpms.i shifted it into reverse and the idle speed went under 1000 rpms.foot is still on the brake.i let it back out of the garage onto the driveway and then onto the street turning the wheel partially to align myself into the street to begin to drive away.foot is still on the brake when i shifted into drive.as soon as i shifted into drive it accelerated uncontrollably.my foot is still on the brake , but i realize that the brake will not stop it.i had to make a quick turn to avoid running onto the curb/mailbox and then i quickly shifted it into neutral to bring it to a stop.it came to a stop and i look down at the transmission and i actually shifted it through neutral into reverse.but, it at least was stopped.i contacted my local toyota dealer in ames, ia and they said to bring it in and they would take a look at it.i took it in on mar 4, 2010.they said they ran all sorts of diagnostics on it and it checked out fine.they said they contacted toyota and opened up a case number and would let me know when they knew something more.my vehicle was on the floor mat recall, but the same dealer looked at it last year and said the floor mat was fine.it was not on the foot pedal recall.i believe this is an electronic problem that toyota is trying to hide with these other recalls.i have no confidence that this problem will not occur again and believe toyota needs to address this asap.

Unintended acceleration ina 2009 toyota tacoma.while shifting from the 3rd to 4th gear, the engine stayed at high speed even though my foot was off accelerator pedal.i was able to get the truck off the road with the engine off.after getting out of traffic, i restarted the engine and it was still racing.i turned it off and restarted it about 1-2 minutes later and it was normal.

I was dring 40mph and the throttle/accelerator got stuck as i tried to pass another car.i had to slam on the brakes as i almost crashed against another vheicle.even then, the truck continued until i slammed on the brakes a second time and shifted the gear into parking in the middle of the street.

I live in charleston, sc and i purchased a 2009 toyota tacoma on march 17, 2010 with 12,000 miles on it.i was excited to take it on vacation to the florida pan handle over the easter weekend.my excitement turned to a nightmare on saturday april 3rd when while passing another vehicle on a rural road in florida the tacoma gas pedal pulled away from me and the car engine went to maximum rpm.i put the tacoma in neutral and coasted to the side of the road.the engine continued to rev at max rpm, even after i turned it off and then restarted it.i had the truck towed to the nearest toyota dealer which was located in tallahassee fl.the service director at legacy immediately stated that the floor mats caused the acceleration.he provided a rental car for me for the remainder of the weekend, and told me he would have the truck checked out on monday morning.i received a call back on monday afternoon telling me that toyota was releasing the car back to me, and that it was safe to drive.i told the dealer that i felt the car had a problem, and that i did not feel that it was safe to drive.i am certainly not an automotive engineer or a mechanic, however i do have a master's degree in mechanical engineering, and have been a licensed professional engineer for 20 years.i rented another car at my own expense, and drove 400 miles back to south carolina on tuesday april 6.my 19 year old son was graduating from marine bootcamp at parris island on thursday april 8th.i am currently without a car, and more than 400 miles away from where my truck is currently located.

As the vehicle is coming to a stop and i am putting on the brake, the engine revs up uncontrollably.my foot is pressed hard on the brake, and is nowhere near the accelerator. The only way i can stop it is to quickly put it into neutral.i keep it in neutral and keep pressing my left foot hard on the brake.after it revs up to about 6000 rpm, it finally goes back to idle. This has happened on four different occasions in the last five months.the first incident occurred within a couple weeks after i purchased my brand new vehicle.i have taken this vehicle into the toyota service center twice for this problem.they didn't know how to fix it since they say it has to be doing it when they look at it.they have documented it in their files and confirmed that the unexplained acceleration is not caused by a floor mat defect.

Five months old 2009 toyota tacoma prerunner, v6 5-speed automatic transmission.had made short trip from home and was returning. Proceeding down slight grade about three blocks from home manually downshifted from drive to 4th. Seeing red signal several blocks ahead downshifted again to 3rd, then 2nd, slowing enough so as to have green light at intersection. Made braking right turn at intersection, aware from experience that i would now have red light at next intersection and would have to stop. Again slight downgrade after making turn.truck required more than normal braking to slow properly after turn, finally used both feet to apply maximum brake pressure. Truck stopped, but after stopping engine surged repeatedly, causing rear wheels to intermittently spin uncontrollably on damp pavement. Only front wheel brakes were holding truck from crashing into another vehicle. Managed to shift into park and shut off engine. When restarted, operation was normal.floor mats not involved! engine was repeatedly surging and returning to normal rpm. Both feet were on brake pedal and not on accelerator.odometer: 3850.conditions: night, headlights on, heater blower on, a/c off, radio off. Due to shortness of trip engine was most likely not fully warmed up to normal operating temperature.after arriving home took truck out for another short trip over same route. Unable to replicate situation. As retired electronics technician understand how difficult this type of intermittent issue is for toyota to replicate or confirm, but it is happening, and it is a major safety issue, nhtsa. And it is a lot more than "floor mats". Floor mats might occasionally catch an accelerator pedal, but they don't make an engine repeatedly surge. Been driving 50 years... Know it when i see it.

While braking at intersection, truck accelerated striking vehicle in front, causing that vehicle to strike car in front of them. Foot was on the brake.

At or around 1330hrs local time on april11th i was stationary at a red light on e.main street at franklin ave in rockaway borough in dry daylight conditions when my truck experienced full acceleration in an instant propelling me forward until i impacted the vehicle 3 ft in front of me also stopped at the red light. The impact instantly lowered the engine speed to normal idle. This is the third time this happened. The dealer and toyota try to hide under the floor matsinterfering with the accelerator. The last time this happenedin 2013 the dealer cut the accelerator pedal and reflashed the computer. It's still not right. Toyota had an independent lab to look at the events recorder and reported everything is fine. The engine speeds up in a rapid manner at a complete stop giving the operator just milli-seconds to try to react. A crash is the result. I'm lucky today, it could have been pedestrians run over and killed.this is a serious problem, i won't drive the toyota anymore it's an unsafe vehicle.

I was driving south on i/s 95 in attleboro, ma at about 2:45 pm on 6/6/13 in a 2009 toyota tacoma pickup. My wife was in the passenger seat and the only other passenger in the vehicle. I was traveling at about 60 mph and moved to the right lane to take exit 2 onto rt 1a southbound.the cruise control was on and engaged.when i flipped the lever to disengage (cancel) the cruise control the truck did not start to slow down (my foot was off the accelerator pedal). If anything, the truck started to accelerate. I immediately applied the brakes very forcefully, with little, if any affect. I immediately put the transmission into neutral.by this time, i was off the highway and on the exit ramp. Centrifugal force was pushing me to the left. It pushed the truck over the curb and grass and into the entrance ramp from 1a south onto i/s 95 south.at this time, i saw a vehicle on the entrance ramp headed toward me. Had i tried to steer to the right the truck would most likely would have skidded and blocked the ramp entirely, so i turned to the left, turning into the skid, hoping that the oncoming vehicle would have room enough to pass to my right.my truck continued skidding to my left and i believe hit the curb on the right side of the entrance ramp. It then flipped onto the drivers side, skidded along the pavement, hit something elsemost likely the guardrailand flipped back to the upright position. It came to rest on the left side of the entrance ramp.i do not know what became of the previously on-coming auto. There was nothing to indicate contact between contact between the two vehicles.both side airbags deployed. Both of us had our seat belts attached. The front windshield was broken, the roof severely dented, scrapes along the driver's side and glass throughout the cab.the rescue arrived and transported us to the hospital.

Dealer fails to admit that there is a problem.they could not reproduce the complains in a road test and insist there are no recalls.the vehicle races and is very difficult to stop at times.they adjusted the transmission but the problem is worse now.i have almost gone through a building because i could not stop the vehicle.4 others have driven the truck and complain of the same difficulty.

Bl

2009 toyota tacoma.consumer writes in regards to sudden acceleration.the consumer stated as he attempted to pull into a parallel parking spot, the vehicle accelerated on its own, with so much force, he had to use all of his strength in his legs to stand on the brake pedal, until he could shift into neutral and the engine decelerated. The consumer stated since january, the acceleration has occurred about a half dozen times. The vehicle was inspected but nothing was found.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While driving 60 mph the vehicle accelerated without a warning. The contact was able to control the speed and stop the acceleration by depressing the brake pedal. On a separate occasion, while driving in reverse from a driveway with the brakes depressed, the vehicle independently accelerated. The contact had to use extreme force on the brake pedal to stop the unintended acceleration. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where they were unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 8,400. Updated 9/1/10 updated 09/02/10

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While driving 45 mph,the vehicle shifted out of gear and accelerated on its own. The contact was able to control the vehicle by applying the brakes and stop the vehicle. The dealer was contacted and could not duplicate the failure and stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 5,000. The current mileage was 8,000.

Accelerator sticks when i let off the gas pedal. Pedal does not stay physically depressed, it just doesn't slow down. If i push in clutch, engineraces and rpm stays high. Dealer told me this was engineered into the vehicle to "assist with shifting".

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. He purchased the vehicle on april 20, 2010. While driving the vehicle home on the date it was purchasedwhile he approached a stop sign with his foot on the brake. The vehicle accelerated as he kept his foot on the brake until the vehicle slowed down. He took the vehicle to the dealer andhe asked if the brake pedal was too close to the gas pedal. The dealer stated that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. On february 18, 2010 he took the vehicle back to the dealerfor inspection and the dealer stated for the second time that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. Immediately after he left the dealer, he drove into ashopping center parking lot and the vehicle suddenly accelerated over a curb and collided into an empty store window. I was on my way to work in my new (3 months old) 2009 toyota tacoma. I was about one block from home when i was approaching a red light. As i was braking for the red light and the engine suddenly sped up on it's own. I had to press down very hard on the brakes to stop the car, but wheels were still spinning cause the brakes to smoke. (i could see the smoke in my rear view mirror. I had to put the car in park to completely stop the forward movement of the car. The engine continued to run at very high rpm. I then shut the vehicle off. I started the car again in park, the engine again raced up much higher than normal. I shut the car off again and restarted and every thing was normal. I had the car towed to the toyota dealer as i felt it was unsafe to drive. Prior it being towed i checked the gas pedal and their were no obstructions around it. The dealer could not find any fault codes or sticking linkage etc. They also took it for a test drive. The service manager suggested i accidentally put my foot on the gas instead of the brake, which i truly believe is not the case here.i saw other reports on the internet similar to this for the tacoma so i felt compelled to notify you. Kindly request that you look into this matter as someone could eventually get seriously hurt or killed. Note: i was not using cruise control at the time of the incident. See also 10329722 *dsy

Using the cruise control, set at 61mph, climbing a small hill, the truck downshifted at least 3 times, revving the engine to over 5000 rpm.it startled me.my first reaction was to shift to neutral, but i knew that would cause the engine to over rev.i lifted the cruise control to shut it off, and the engine speed dropped.i drove a while with the cruise off, then retried it.on the first hill the same thing happened, and i shut off the cruise.i tried two more times with the same results.when i drove with out the cruise control on, the engine would down shift only one time, then at the top of the hill would upshift, resuming the normal operation.through out the rest if my visit to pa, i drove w/o cruise control, and there were no over shifting incidents.on the return trip to nc on the 26th, i reset the cruise, and upon climbing a hill, the same thing happened.i shut off the cruise control until i got out of the hills, and then the operation seemed normal.i have made that trip before in the truck, and had nothing like the experience i just mentioned.

I have reported to toyota that my cruise control works intermittently and that it goes on and off as it pleases. Toyota has responded that that issue is not covered with the current spiral cable clock spring recall. My truck vin is a few digits away from the current list. I have replace the brake light switch, the cruise control switch and the problem persists. The spiral cable clock spring controls the cruise control just like does connection between the steering wheel airbag and/or the vehicle's horn and other devices and the vehicle's electrical systems. My cruise control has quit/stopped while the truck is in motion.

My 2009 tacoma when slowing or going around a corner, primarily a right turn fails to accelerate when the pedal is pressed and the engine races momentarily, then engages. I have had it in to the dealer on more than one occasion only to be told that the problem is the "drive by wire" which is electronic, how can toyota say that there is nothing wrong with the electronics when they blame the reverse problem on electronics?

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma doublecab lg bd. While driving55 mph the vehicle began accelerating without intention. He had to exert great force to remove the floor-mat, because it was stuck under the accelerator pedal.he was able to regain vehicle control. The failure and current mileages were 23,000.

2009 toyota tacoma accelerator police report on file with sioux city iowa police dept.i rearended a minivan at an intersection where she was stopped for a red light due to the vehicle lunging and failing to stop despite me standing on the breaks.....toyota dealerships are not fixing the pedal as recall is ordering since they say it is not on the recall list.we have had this vehicle for 1 year on a 3 yr lease.my husband drives it as i feel unsafe in it and it has "acted up" for him on several occasions.we are getting no assistance from toyota in fixing this defect or letting us out of the lease.in order for us to "trade" it for a ford f150 we have to eat $4000 of negative equity... I strongly feel that we are putting our lives in danger by driving this vehicle but have no choice since we both have a 30 mile commute in opposite directions.its not like we have other vehicles to drive instead.according to your website, it has a recall, but when billion toyota in sioux falls sd runs the vin they claim ithas no recall.we need your help!

I have a 2009 toyota tacoma. I have had 3 instances where the truck would hunch up at a stop light like someone was pressing on the gas pedal as i was on the brake pedal. In the last case the truck was being driven out of a church parking lot at a low speed and the vehicle took off and lost control and hit a car. I personally inspected the floormat entrapment the floormat was not even close to the pedal. I have been a technician for 25 yrs and believe it is in the controller. I contacted toyota and they want to send someone out to inspect it. It has not been repaired for all damage yet. Luckily no one was hurt. This vehicle only has 4,825 miles on it.

My complaint is related to the toyota recall, the accelerator pedal on my toyota tacoma 09 got stuck while driving on the golden state 5 fwy where i miraculously avoided an accident by pulling back the pedal with the tip of my shoe.

This is my second complaint concerning my 2009 toyota tacoma. The other was a transmission problem, however, this frightening experience was different. I was doing about 65mph on the expressway when ipushed the accelerator. The truck did not accelerate, but instead the engine revved up very high. The rpm's dropped when i took my foot offthe accelerator. I was so frightened that i pulled over to the side of the road. I am now afraid to drive my toyota, but i must drive it to get to work. These malfunctioning toyota's are so dangerous. The mileage on that date was about 3800.

While shifting my 2009 toyota tacoma from park into drive there was a brief sudden acceleration which required me to apply maximum brake pressure to keep the truck from moving forward. This incident occurred in a school parking lot and there were other vehicles in front of me.

2009 toyota tacoma truck. This is a second "failure" report due to rapid acceleration. First report was made on 12/03/09 or 12/04/09 to you for same problem. Your case # [xxx]. Nhtsa id # [xxx].see also 10294490 and 10367974.*dsyon april 13, 2010 at 1:25 pm i was leaving a commercial parking lot in my tacoma truck. I backed out of the parking space in reverse, came to a stop, and then moved the shift lever down towards drive. When the shift indicator reached neutral the engine immediately began to accelerate rapidly up to 4,500 rpm. This time i waited about 10 seconds and then the engine wound back down to normal idle. My foot was only on the brake, not the gas pedal, and there is no floor mat problem.during the dec-09 incident i did not wait for the engine to slow down. I just turned off the ignition.my tacoma's situation seems to be connected to the floor-mounted gear shifting mechanism in some way since this has happened twice. I did/will not take the truck to the dealer since they will find nothing wrong just like the last time.the truck mileage was at 14,102 miles on 4/13/10. The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated while driving approximately 10 mph, he approached a stop signal. After the brake pedal depressed the vehicle surged and crashed into another vehicle. The contact sustained no injuries. The vehicle was driven from the scene. Nhtsa recall campaign id number 09v388000 (speed control) was not related or associated with the recall. The unexpected acceleration occurred two times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who reprogrammed the computer system. In addition, an engineer was referred by themanufacturer to perform an investigation related to the defect, and gather information from the data recorder. The approximate failure mileage was 50,500.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer because he was experiencing issues when he was shifting gears. The technicians modified the accelerator pedal. After the accelerator pedal was modified he was drivingapproximately 35 mph when it became difficult for him to engage the pedal. The dealer stated that they would replace the pedal; however, the vehicle was notrepaired. The approximate failure mileage was 15,000.

Thecontact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma.while driving 40 mph the consumer accelerated the vehicle and accelerator pedal became stuck. The vehicle was shifted into neutral, but the engine revved so he shifted it back into drive.recalling recent news broadcasts he then pulled the floor mat away from the pedals, and then the vehicle returned to a normal state.a technician from the dealer stated that the floor mats were not hooked onto the clips. The floor mats are original equipment all weather mats. Thecurrent mileage was 6700. Thefailure mileage was 6680.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact was entering a residential driveway and as the accelerator pedal was released, the vehicle sudden accelerated rapidly. There was also an abnormal increase in engine roms. The vehicle crashed into the side of the residence. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that they would send an investigator to further assess the failure. The failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 20,300.

On tuesday, november 3, 2009, i was coming out of a stop light and the throttle went to full open and stuck. (2009 tacoma - just a year old)i am a conservative driver and do not gun the engine.i was pulling into the intersection gradually and hadn't even let the clutch out all the way yet to shift out of first when the throttle when to full.(thank goodness i have a standard!)i babied the clutch to give me just enough gas to move through the intersection and stop on the other side.i turned off the truck and when i turned it back on, it was fine.the engine smelled awful!i checked the floor mat when i stopped because i know it can cause problems and i had a non-conforming mat, so i keep an eye on it, but the mat wasn't the problem.also, i never had the accelerator down very far at all when the throttle opened up, so i don't see how the mat could cause the throttle to open full, stick yes, but open full by itself? i drove it the rest of the way to work (less than 2 miles) and the smell blew away and all seemed ok.i had it in the shop today and they could find nothing wrong and told me to remove the mats.fine, i can do that, but meanwhile it makes me nervous that it could happen again.the service department representative agreed with me that he didn't see how the mats could have caused the problemi did not know about this being a general problem and in the news right now (i don't watch tv and if i miss the npr story or it isn't front page, i may not hear things).when i found out others were having the problem, i thought i should write about mine.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. While driving above 45 mph the vehicle began to rapidly accelerate and would not slow down. As a consequence she crashed and went into a ditch. Her front fender, hood and driver side door were damaged. There was a police report available. The toyota manufacturer has not been contacted. The failure mileage was 10,000. Updated 03/10/10 the consumer stated the accelerator pedal would stick sporadically and infrequently. Updated 10/12/10

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that she received a recall notice in reference to nhtsa campaign id number(09v388000-vehicle speed control:accelerator pedal). After getting the recall repairs done she was unsatisfied because the floor mats do not fit comfortable and her foot slips off of the accelerator pedal. She also states that she would like for them to reverse the remedy due to the problem that she experienced at the time. The manufacturer was contacted and they informed her that the government will not allow them to reverse the remedy. The failure mileage was approximately 14,500.

The rear view mirror is too low and causes a large blind spot.the blind spot created by the location of the rear view mirror has caused me not to be able to see several vehicles crossing in front of me.this is most prominent when approaching an intersection and a vehicle is approaching from my right.i have found that i must actually duck down and look around my mirror when approaching intersections in order to see all approaching traffic.

The windshield wipers on my 2009 toyota tacoma abruptly stopped working while driving in rain. Visibility was seriously limited, making the situation dangerous to me and others. I took the vehicle to the closest toyota dealer, they determined the wiper motor was defective and they would have to order one. The problem persists and has yet to be repaired.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma.the contact stated that he purchased an extra protection package for the vehicle that would cover the windshield.the dealer stated that the manufacturer of the windshield installed an etching into the glass to protect the vehicle against theft.the contact was also informed that there was a permanent plate installed in the windshield to prevent it from shattering.while driving less than 50 mph, a rock crashed into the front windshield and caused a large spider-like crack and a dime-sized hole.the current and failure mileages were less than 2,000. Updated 4/28/09 the consumer believed the security etching located on the bottom driver-side of the windshield contributed to the windshields breaking when a small stone hit it. He believed the etching weakened the windshield substantially. Updated 04/30/09.

Tire hoist rusting

The welds lower control arm mount on the driver side failed when i applied the brakes at high speed and almost caused an accident and almost completely removed my wheel and the lower control arm from the car.

Wheel bearings and hub assembly:soon after i took my truck to a toyota dealership to have the rear leaf springs replaced under a recall, the truck started riding rough and squeaking loudly as it was driven.i went back to the same dealership and they quoted me near $2,000 to replace.the truck seems to ride rougher with each passing day.the dealership said that the front wheel bearings were fine but both of the rear wheel bearings are bad and they further said that they normally replace the hub assembly with the wheel bearings and that was part of the reason for the high cost according to the service rep.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that there was an abnormal noise progressing associated with the wheels on the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the right front wheel bearing prematurely failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who replaced the right front wheel bearing. The failure recurred months later. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the left rear wheel bearing failed and they replaced the part with an aftermarket wheel bearing. The contact noticed that the abnormal noise continued and the vehicle was taken back to the independent repair shop who replaced the rear right wheel bearing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure several times and provided no remedy. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000. Updated 09/17/15*lj
