Passenger front airbag makes a rattling noise while in motion more noticeable on any uneven road.
Takata recall?i have a 2004 tacoma pre-runner 4dr. V-6. My airbag warning light came on approx. Oct. 2014 (50,000 miles). All that i have read so far is that it might be a broken "spiral cable" within the steering wheel. All airbag problems i've seen are with 2005 & newer vehicles? as of dec. 2015 (60,k miles),i still have the problem but have not yet visited a dealership to identify the fault.
I want to check my vin #to see if it is one of the vehicles affected by toyota's defective passenger side airbags.
I was driving on the freeway and a car was in a accident, the vehicle was on its side. The owners of the car had got out to safety, but had to leave it to protect themselves. It was a black or very dark colored. With in this time of my passenger and myself in my 2004 toyota truck had come upon it to fast to stop. It was a split decision and reflex to slam on my brakes. Other cars where around and i had no other choice but to hit head on. I was doing about 65 miles an hour and slamming on my brakes did little to avoid or lesson my reduction of speed. Thank god my passenger and i had on our safety belts. My truck comes with air bags and was listed as a good production of vehicles with safe and quality protection in an accident. I love my truck. I was not protected as led to believe. My air bags did not deploy. My truck is beyond questionable of my impact they should have deployed. I barely have a front portion of a bumper. Engine was smashed into my cab practically. Fenders caved in. Totaled.... I need help understanding this. I need to be insured that toyota would not let this be overlooked. Im asking for this and maybe other safety issues to be handled and taken into to serious concern. It might be with this model truck only.
Toyota tacoma-trd- 2004. Head on collision, servered front damaged. Both airbag did not deploy.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While the contact's son was driving 55 mph, the axle and ball joints detached from the vehicle. The contact's son lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a dirt ditch. The air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to valley hi toyota (14612 valley center drive, victorville, ca 92395, 866-405-5098), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 178,468.
I purchased a used 2004 tacoma pick-up truck from an independent dealer and noted the front air bag warning light was illuminated.i finally took it to the toyota dealer for repair in 2013.they replaced the spiral cable in the steering column which turned the air bag warning light off for a few weeks and then it became illuminated again.i took it back and they worked on it for several hours and said the only remedy is to replace the entire air bag assembly for $1600.i am unsatisfied since there have been several recalls on the tacoma air bag systems from models 2005 and higher but not this year.how can such a similar problem not be a manufacturing issue?meanwhile i probably do not have proper functioning air bags.
While stopped in traffic, i was rear-ended by a vehicle. I hit the vehicle in front of me and that vehicle hit the one in front of it.the airbags did not deploy.my passenger's head hit the windshield even though she was wearing a seatbelt (the interior design required me to have the seat positioned quite close to the windshield).
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While idling at a stop, the vehicle suddenly accelerated independently. The vehicle did not respond when the brake pedal was depressed. As a result, the contact crashed the vehicle into another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. No injuries were reported and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure recurred three times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 131,200. Updated 12/30/14*lj updated05/26/2015
2004 toyota tacoma slid on ice and hit a tree resulting in the vehicle flipping and injuring the three passengers and the air bags did not inflate.***no answer required***.*mr
Vehicle airbag light stayed on. And is still on .took the toyota to the dealership. They ran a diagnostics test on it. Someone came back to inform i needed new airbags. They saidmoisture entered the airbags .may cause the air bag to malfunction. They new about the takata airbags recall .so i assumed it would be fixed for free.no i had to pay the bill. So i didn't. What can i do?
2004 toyota tacoma, air bag did not deploy.
Consumer's vehicle was involved in a frontal collision at 40-45 mph, consumer vehicle was hit on the front right side near the tire area.upon impact, frontal air bagsfailed to deploy. Driver was restrained with the seat belt, and no injury was reported. Dealer was notified.the vehicle was hit so hard in the front that it was totaled.*tc
While driving 45 mphvehicle was involved in a head on collision. Upon impact, dual air bags did not deploy.passenger suffered from a broken wrist.
I was driving at a normal speed on the highway.the gas pedal became unresponsive.i had to push the pedal all the way to the floor in order to get up to speed.the check engine light came on and the transmission had trouble switching between gears.this problem occurred intermittently and continues to happen.the code that has come up is to replace the throttle body, which i have two separate times, but again the new replacement part is quoted at $1000.
Drivers side door handle fell off, while stationary. I grabbed handle to open door like normal, and part of it crumbled im my hand and then fell to the ground. It could not be put back on due to excessive corrosion. This is a huge safty risk of someone getting trapped in the vehicle if something happened and the handle fell off at the most importuned time, it could easily cause fatalities. While searching for a replacemet part i met several others with this same problem. The fact that toyota is charging and exuberant about for the handle assembly's ($4251
When exiting the vehicle, passengers are shocked when they touch the door to close it.the shock is more than what would be felt when touch the contacts on an electrical outlet.often leaving a shocked feeling in the fingers for aome time after exiting the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the driver side door's electronic lock system failed. The door locked on its own and did not unlock with the interior or exterior door handles. The passenger side door was used to exit the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for the failure a diagnostic was performed, which was unable to locate a failure code. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.updated 1/19/16 ln; updated4/16/18
I was driving my truck to a work location and stopped at a t-intersection to yield to the normal traffic flow.while stopped, the engine began to rev up for no apparent reason.i was not touching the accelerator pedal, but had my foot firmly on the brake.at first, i heard the engine noise but did not realize that it was my vehicle making the noise.then when i looked down at my instruments, i saw that my engine rpm's were above 1800 and staying steady.there was an audible clunk noise and the truck suddenly lurched forward (transmission engaging i would guess) and i pressed the brake with increased force to keep from rolling forward.then the engine rpm's returned to a normal idle just as suddenly.this occurred with a warm engine after several miles of normal driving.while the same exact thing has not occurred since this incident, i have had at least one other episode where the truck's engine rpm's increased for no reason while i was stopped at a red light.the latter occurrence was not as severe as the first incident and happened within the last month or so.i wanted to report this because my truck is a toyota brand and i have read about the recent recalls related to accelerator issues on some of the smaller toyota passenger cars, but never saw any mention of this involving their truck products.as an engineer myself, i strongly suspect that this phenomenon is due to an electrical and/or computer malfunction and not some sort of mechanical or physical interference issue.i say this because of my own experience when i know for a fact that there was nothing interfering with the accelerator pedal and it was not stuck mechanically.
Emergency flashers come on by themselves. Unable to disengage switch and turn signals will not work.
2004 toyota tacoma v6 3.4l 5vz-fe with automatic transmission. Toyota originally equipped this vehicle with a throttle by wire system. The vehicle unexpectedly does not respond to accelerator pedal position. Toyota on board diagnostic system does not detect fault thus does not log any error codes or illuminate check engine light. Occurrence rate and duration of events is intermittent and inconsistent. Velocity of the vehicle rapidly decreases unexpectedly and momentarily as if foot was temporarily removed from the accelerator pedal. Vehicle also unexpectedly and momentarily does not respond when accelerator pedal is depressed to begin moving or suddenly decreases speed when accelerating. This is a potential hazard in situations such as cruising in traffic, clearing an intersection, crossing railroad tracks, etc... Occurrence rate and duration of problem seems to be worsening over time or with increased ambient temperatures.
Throttle body related and re-occurring problem. Where the accelerator position sensor mal-functions causing the vehicle to stall. Toyota does not sell the sensor but does sell the entire throttle body at a cost of over $700. Warranted vehicles with calif. Emissions, goes for 5 years or 60k miles. But fed emission vehicles only have a 3 year 36k mile warranty although it is the same exact part number in question.
From a dead stop to anyspeed, it felt like i no acceration. I would have to feather the gas pedal to get up to speed. I've replaced fuel filter, 02 sender ( front), maf sender ,fuel pressure regulator ,cleaned all grounds, had fuel pump tested , had head gasket checked ,changed spark plugs and wire's, cleaned throttle body and pressure cleaned fuel system. Every time i change a part or do any cleaning , the truck will run fine, for awhile , but the problem returns. I now have 150k on truck ,and i want to get 150 k more. I fell this is a extremely hazards situation. All i'm looking for is a answer to what's wrong!!!! toyota is aware of what's wrong ,but the dealers only to keep replacing parts ($) . The toyotaforum s on webhave1000s of answer s, but, nothing definite. Please help!!!!
Have a 2004, toyota tacoma, v6, 4x4. I was driving down the freeway and every now and then it is like i took my foot off the gas but i didn't! if i step on it, it is fine.the problem: is throttle by wire throttle bodies on 03 and 04 tacomas. The accelerator petal position sensor assembly has a shaft onto which the lever for the accelerator cable is mounted with some return springs. This shaft also turns the potentiometer. This lever (a plastic piece) limits the travel of the assembly, so the highest and lowest resistances of the potentiometer are not encountered in the potentiometer. The problem is that the potentiometer can also turn in the assembly, loosing its reference to the arm and lever. Then the range of resistance that is possible can be changed. If it turns too far one way, the higher resistance will be such that there is not sufficient voltage sent to the ecu to indicate that the pedal has been depressed. Conversely, there is a point at the other end of the petitioner where the full voltage is applied and the ecu sees this as a failure and closes the throttle by releasing the throttle control motor's clutch. Nothing has been to done to solve this issue with toyota or dealership. Mechanic can not replicated problem. Suggested i replace brand new throttle body which is about $600.
The vehicle was in motion at highway speeds when the truck instantly began decelerating even though i had the accelerator depressed.this problem resolved after turning the truck off and then on again.the problem recurred several times while stopped and while driving over the course of the next month.i was nearly rear ended as a result of this failure.upon reading, and inspection by a mechanic i was notified that the throttle sensor had failed, and the entire throttle body needed to be replaced as a result.upon researching this i did discover that this is the case the '03-'04 tacoma (i have an 04), for which a throttle position sensor is not available, at least in the u.s.this is a very dangerous issue that several people have complained about with '03-'04 tacoma trucks.replacing the entire throttle assembly is an obnoxious and expensive consequence for a faulty electronic part that puts vehicle owners' lives at risk. This should have been addressed by the manufacturer!
Alarm and electrical system on 2004 toyota tacoma double cab prerunner sr5 pickup.alarm system activated on its own at 5:30 am sep 18-05 and could not disengage it. Loud electrical clicking noises emitted from under the dashboard around the ashtray that could be heard from over 100 feet away, even through walls inside a house (clicking/popping noise) lights flickering inside truck. Left truck with toyota in savannah all day monday. (they had told me when i dropped it off that they would check the entire electrical system for shorts or faults.) when i picked it up i was told that there was nothing wrong with the truck, and nothing happened all day while it was there. When i went to get into the truck, and pushed the button to disengage the alarm and unlock the truck, the horn beeped 4 times (instead of the normal 2 times) so i went back in and told the service manager. He reassured me it was nothing to worry about, and said sometimes these things happen, and it doesn't matter whether the horn beeps twice, or 4 times, that again, there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. I drove the truck back home to charleston,sc and 30 minutes after i parked in the driveway, the alarm went off on it's own again, every 6 minutes the alarm went off on its own again so i needed to disconnect the positive battery cable again, it was making the loud clicking electrical short noises again. Called toyota hq to see what would be done, as this vehicle is also under a major recall for the lower ball joints and they refused to replace them on several occasions, explained that i have tried repeatedly at several different toyota dealers and have been told their hands are tied unless i have the recall letter from hq in hand. Afraid to drive this lemon as it is obviously unsafe with the front lower ball joint problem especially, and now with this possible major electrical fault, don't want the truck to catch fire and burn up.
While driving the vehicle loses pedal response due to the throttle control motor shutting down and the check engine light coming on. The engine either shuts down completely or the becomes very jerky and cannot sustain an idle. Incidents began to occur around 95,000 miles odo but stopped for several years after a mechanic worked on the vehicle and said the throttle position sensor was out of alignment. More recently the truck has again been experiencing the same problem as before: loss of pedal response, and in addition it now shuts the engine down and the gauges shoot up to the top of the charts and tick unresponsively until the key is removed from the ignition. This has occurred multiple times now in traffic and along the roadway where the truck becomes unresponsive and is difficult to drive safely off of the roadway.
While driving vehicle inadvertently caught on fire. The cause of the fire was undetermined.
After running the vehicle and shutting it off for about 2 hours the vehicle did not want to start, there was only about 2,000 miles on the truck. The starter is cranking the engine, but the engine is not starting up. I took it to the toyota service department, and they said nothing was wrong with the vehicle. The same thing happend severl times after i had taken it to toyota. The only way to start the vehicle would be to crank it up for about 5 minutes, then the vehicle would run rough for about a minute. I took it to the toyota service department again and this time they worked on it. They said they had to change the throttle position sensor, the engine wiring harness, and the fuel injectors. No old parts were available. Problem has still not been corrected. Vehicle now has about 6,000 miles and every 3-4 days it still doesn't want to start up.
While driving vehicle, experienced a burning smell coming from behind the dashboard.the stereo, clock, and auto alarm ceased working.took the vehicle to the dealership to diagnose the problem.the dealership stated that the dome fuse was the wrong size and replaced it with the correct size. Fixed the problem, but now the stereo no longer works.the fuse in question was from the factory.
I have a 2004 toyota tacoma truck ( not included on the recent toyota recall) this truck has been recalled before for a front axle ball bearing defects ,toyota changed the ball bearings which i thought would fixed the problem . But just last week i drove into a bumpy road and i noticed that when you step on the brakes while on a bumpy road the brakes would dud and seems the mid axles will breakdown ,it make weird noise .
While driving andafter striking a bump in the roadvehicle became hard to contain, causing it to go into another lane.

Crankshaft pulley that drives alternatorhas become loose and makes squeaking sounds.. Contacted toyota and they couldn't help....what should i do since a recall of 4000+ has been initiated for this failure and my vin number isn't included??
After the truck has reached operating temperature, or after restarting the vehicle after it has been parked andthe engine is still warm, the engine loses power randomly when pressing the accelerator.it happens either from a standstill, in traffic, or reaccelerating after cruising.most prevalent in 4th and 5th gear. Need to jockey the throttle to get it moving again.flooring will cause the engine to "buck" when engine regains power.it's not drivable for anyone not familiar with this issue and i'm therefore the only driver of the truck.i'm attempting a repair at the toyota dealership for the second time since i couldn't recreate the first time.i suspect we test drove it and engine diagnostics were performed with a cold engine and it doesn't do it then.the condition is getting worse since it started displaying these symptoms today with a cold engine for the first time.i can no longer simply pull out into traffic like i used to and constantly have to jockey the throttle to not get rear ended, since the speed decrease is significant when this happens.it seems curious to me that the dealership claims not to have heard of this issue before, yet it seems pretty common searching for "tacoma throttle problems."

Problem with the electronic throttle control on acceleration, the throttle drops off like i let my foot off the pedal, the dealer replaced the throttle body per customerrequest (me) and it fixed the problem, only to happen again several months later, this happened one time again, a total of 2 new throttle bodys were replaced, now a few years later it failed again trying to pass a car and i almost caused an accident because the throttle failed.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While parked, the engine warning indicator illuminated. In addition, the contact discovered a hole on the rear driver side leaf spring and it was not connected to the frame. The contact stated that the frame had rusted. The vehicle was driven to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 162,000.
While driving on the freeway about 55mph my truck stalled on me twice doe a second. Also pulling out of my drive i had a hesitation in acceleration and almost got hit from a oncoming vehicle. They are no check engine light that comes on. Took it to a mechanic and they couldn't fin a issue.
Vehicle has 113,000 miles on it but is undriveable because frame is rusted through.
I have read many, many other people online are having this identical issue and is causing cars to stall out and have to nearly rebuild the engine. Cylinder number 6 is misfiring consistently after 175,000 miles and to fix it, the heads have to be shaved and is costing the consumer around $4500 minimum to fix the issue. The stalling of the engine put myself in danger on a public road when it happened.
Local toyota dealership service department reported that the engine (v6 3.4) left bank head gasket is leaking and requires a replacement of the cylinder head gasket, with a valve reconfiguration, at the estimated cost of $2,762.00. Since toyota has had previous vehicle recalls for v6 series engine/gasket reliability issues and the vehicle in question only has 51,559 miles, with excellent maintenance and service, that the cylinder gasket head leak may be a production defect and other owners are experiencing this same issue.
Was in parking lot of store.started engine and put in gear and vehicle shot forward and it seemed as if i had no control of it sideswiping another vehicle and headed for another vehicle that i was about to broadside when i was able to stop my vehicle.was able to get vehicle home which was a short distance away but am now terrified to drive it.notified insurance company.i called dealership where vehicle was purchased but unable to speak to anyone.left message but no one has returned my call.
Hard start with 2004 toyota tacoma.this problem began the day i drove it off the lot. Sometimes the vehicle starts right up and other times it takes 3-5 attempts at starting. This nonconformity usually happens after its been driven and sits for 1-2 hours.the vehicle has been brought in for this intermittent starting problem5 times.with 870 miles on the vehicle i brought it in and toyota said the spark plugs were fouled and changed them.the problem continued to occur 2-3 times per week.with 1500 miles we brought it in again and toyota said the problem was the electro magnetic current interfering with the injector circuit.they removed the ground wire cable out of the wire harness and said the engine started just fine.the problem continued to occur.the third time i brought it in with 9087 miles.they performed a tsb eg042-04 fpn-8122-04052, 0p eg4016. The problem continued to occur.the fourth time i brought it in with 9901 miles the technician could not duplicate the problem and said everything was in specifications. The problem continued to occur.the fifth time i brought it in it had 11.700 miles.toyota replaced the ube sub-assmbly e. The engine still has problems starting.
My 2004 toyota tacoma has an intermittent problem with a loss of power, i.e. When i step on the accelerator, it fails to respond for a brief period of time. It is a problem when pulling out into traffic, as the loss of power has led to several near collisions. The vehicle has been to the dealer twice to diagnose the problem, without a clear cause, according to the dealer. Research through an independent service shop points to a problem with the accelerator pedal position sensor. Research on toyota tacoma forums online also seem to support this. The only viable fix seems to be to replace the entire throttle body, since the sensors are not available separately. This cost is over $1200, as opposed to a $70 sensor.the problem is intermittent, and can happen many times a day, or be absent for weeks at a time. Three times it has resulted in a check engine light, with a tps fault recorded (the tps and apps are read as a unit by the ecu). The problem has not yet been adequately addressed.
I purchased my tacoma in 2004 with 6000 miles on it.every since i bought it, it has been extremely high on gas, only getting between 240-260 miles on a tank. I have taken it to the toyota dealer and they could not find out what was wrong with it. It feels as if it has a skip in it. I now have 20,789 miles on it and when i took it to the dealer they recommended a fuel injection flush so i had that done but it still feels as though it still has a skip. This is only a 4 cylinder motor shouldn't i be getting better gas mileage?
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that he received a manufacturer's recall for the frame. After having the repairs completed, he noticed that the frame was separating from the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken back to the dealer for further inspection. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000. The current mileage was approximately 70,000. Updated 6/17/13 the consumer stated the 02 sensor was replaced three times, the catalytic converter was also replaced three times. The shroud that covered the gas tank, rotted and fell of the truck, and the check engine light illuminated several times. Updated 06/25/13

My pickup was just reframed under toyota recall at toyota of bedford, ohio. But,, they omittedthe safety shield under the fuel tank.. Aka ..gravel shield.. First saying it never had one, then it was missing, then it didn't come in the kit, i filed a case with toyota usa, corporation # 1701033889 as per all safety items were to be maintained or replaced!! but i was denied by toyota corp. So i will have to pick up my truck under protest as toyota of bedford is threatening me with calling the loaner car in as stolen if i don't today !said shield was "rusty" but most was on the truck when it went in there, and im on social security (small check) whichour great obama care takes almost five eights of & i really cant afford the $ 640.- they are asking just for the part ! i really don't feel safe in the truck without the shield , so it will probably sit till better weather & i can make a shield for it..and it will be stronger & last much longer than the piece of "rusty tin, " that they say fell away. So again , im picking it up under protest & will write that on the billing statement today 1/52017... [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma sr5. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitted into the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that there was a hole in the fuel tank. As a result, the fuel tank and sending unit needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileages were 111,000.
On several occasions my truck has completely lost power.a few times it happened while pulling into traffic resulting in me almost being hung out in a busy intersection.when i push the gas pedal, it starts to move forward, then suddenly loses power.i believe the problem is somewhere in the throttle body.i also get some hesitation when lightly hitting the accelerator at highway speeds.
At a stop, vehicle does not accelerate after depressing the gas pedal.2 occasions nearly caused an accident.also, at cruising speeds (60-70 mph) vehicle will decelerate without any change in pressure to the gas pedal.
2004 toyota tacoma 4x4 with 3.4l engine and manual trans. Having throttle body issues. The accelerator position sensor is failing causing the truck to stall for a second and then pick back up. Truck does not throw a check engine code when this occurs, so dealer has informed me on different occasions that nothing is wrong. I was almost ran over the other day trying to pull out into traffic when the throttle body failed. This is a safety concern and toyota needs to address it immediately!!!!!!!! what's it going to take, someone getting seriously injured or a healthy low suit for toyota to take action?
Dt:the contact stated the fuel line caught on fire o.while stoppingat a red-light he noticed there were flames coming from between the cab and bed of the pickup truck.the fire was extinguished, and the vehicle was towed to the dealership.the dealership had the vehicle for nine weeks.the vehicle has been repaired, and is ready to be picked up.the cause of the fire was from the fuel line and the seal of the fuel tank.

Small rock was hit on a dirt road.it punctured the gas take.had vehicle towed to dealer.gas tank was replaced.
While driving i heard an unusual noise coming from underneath the vehicle.upon self inspection i discovered the fuel tank strap had broke. I noticed also that the fuel tank shield looked like swiss cheese from corrosion.i had a tie down strap that i was able to use to strap the shield and tank up with.i am in the process of looking to repair it.i feel since it is a safety issue toyota should fix it free of charge.a fuel tank strap should never fail like this.
The owner found a recall on 2004 toyota tacomas on the internet.this recall specified that there was a manufacturing defect in the formulation of the undercoating.this manufacturing defect resulted in the rusting of the suspension, and tire plate.upon inspection of the vehicle by a toyota dealer, it was found that thea-frame is rusted through, the leaf springs are failing and are bowed in the opposite direction, gas tank mounts are rusted and the under body of the gas tank housing is rusting through.toyota deemed the vehicle unsafe but refused to do anything because the recall had expired.the owner never received a notice by mail during the recall period.if the owner would have received the recall notice he would have brought the vehicle in for inspection and repair.this vehicle has low mileage and if it were not for these manufacturing defects, could be driven for another 10 years.contact with any common road hazard such as a bump or pot hole could cause the bow springs to fail, and there is a possibility of gas tank rupture, explosion and death.
Gas tank, tank sheid bracket holding tank up almost completly rusted off with hardly holding gas tank on! major issue!
While driving along i would sometimes hear an unusual sound, a slight ringing sound.when i returned home and inspected my truck i saw that one of the metal straps that holds the gas tank in place had rusted apart, and the bracket would rub against the drive shaft, creating the sound.this is one of the tacoma's that was re-framed as part of a recall.it appears the same defective metal used in the frame that was replaced was also used in other components.the gas tank could have fallen, dropped on to the road, or simply exploded, no doubt killing myself and my wife.i had the gas tank straps replaced at a local garage.i also have pictures of the broken strap if you would like to see them.
While on a short shopping trip i suddenly heard a loud rattling/buzzing noise coming from underneath the vehicle. I drove to my local car repair where they noticed while i was pulling into their driveway that the truck fuel tank was bouncing dangerously and was on the verge of falling off.both the fuel tank holder ( a large steel plate ) and the fuel tank strap had rusted thru and were no longer supporting the tank. I shudder to think what might have happened if the tank had fallen.adding insult to injury, this vehicle was in for a recall on 2/13/12 for repair of rust on the frameat miles 52449 ). On 6/18/13 it was in for another recall to fix rust on the rear tire carrier which was replaced ( at miles 61103 ).at neither of these recalls was i told of excess rust on the tank holder and yet with additional mileage of 8612 miles both the fuel tank strap and holder failed.this mishap could have caused a disaster.
Driving at 35 mph, hear a dragging noise and pull to the side of the road.i looked under the car a saw that the metal straps holding the gas tank to the car had rusted thru, allowing the tank to drop down to about 3 inches above the roadway, causing the tank to drag the ground
2004 tacoma frame so rotted that upon hitting a large hole would finish off the rusted frame.this type of rust and erosion is not from normal wear.. This is due to the manufacturing of the vehicle and they will not replace.they say they are aware of it.. But time lapsed to get it fixed??so what now i am out $15k on a 16 year old truck.since when did recalls have an experation date??
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, she noticed something had become detached from under the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the fuel tank protector was corroded. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. The mechanic stated that the fuel tank protector would have to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
Gas tank shield corroding when notified by toyota about corrosion problems to the frame of the truck, i inspected the under neath of the truck myself and also noticed the gas tank shield had corroded away. When i went to the dealer to have the framechecked, i told them about the problem with thegas tank shield and they told me that was not part of the recall.now a year later, i just received another recall for a different problem," excessive corrosion of the spare tire carrier plate". If the frames and spare tire carrier plates corrode due to high road salt use in cold climate states, why are the gas tank shields corroding ? this is a very dangerous safety issue, that needs to be addressed.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact noticed an abnormal odor coming from the fuel tank. The contact drove home and parked the vehicle. The following morning, the contact noticed fuel leaking from the fuel tank onto the driveway without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to ashland honda toyota (2301 lake shore dr e, ashland, wi 54806, (715) 682-5252). The dealer ordered the fuel tank and sent it the independent mechanic. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel tank needed to be replaced for the second time after one year. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
I brought my truck to a toyota dealer to locate an emissions system leak.two other mechanics had spent hours trying to diagnose the problem and were unable to find the leak.the toyota tech found the leak in less than 20 minutes.that would lead me to believe he had dealt with this problem before.the leak turned out to be corrosion in the fuel tank, where the filler neck meets the tank.i would not expect a rusted gas tank in an 8 year old truck. The repair estimate was over $1400, the part alone was $750.this is a truck that had already been recalled for a rusted frame (which toyota replaced at no cost to me) and is showing corrosion in the rear bumper and tailgate.i suspect toyota saved money by building the truck with inferior materials.but more importantly, a leaking fuel tank is a huge safety issue, not common in a vehicle this recent.
Fuel tank strap failed tank dropped pushing shield into driveshaft causing metal to metal grinding. This happened after filling tank and driving.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, she noticed something had become detached from under the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the fuel tank protector was corroded and had caused the fuel tank to become detached. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 61,400...updated 10/30/13 the consumer stated the dealerfound the vehicle had a preforation. The frame and the straps for the fuel tank were replaced. Free of charge.
It's the 5th tacoma i've owned.the parking brake lever in each of the other trucks always came out4 inches from the dash. The "on" light came on when at the 3" mark. This new truck comes out 11.5 inches, hits me in the knee, making it almost impossible to get in and out, almost collides with the stick shift when its in 1st gear.the "on" light comes onbefore its pulled a quarter of an inch. The manual directs the operator, when in stopped on an incline, not to use the clutch to hold the car but rather place the car in nuetral and use the parking brake.after 26 hours owning the car, it rolled down my driveway. At the time, the car was in nuetral with the brake on to the extent all my other ( 4) tacomaswould have been.the "on" light was on.i jumped out of the car for just a second and it rolled away.the insurance manrenacted the incident .he agreedsomething wasn't right.as the car began to roll down the driveway, he got behind it and began trying to stop it. I was able to jump in and stop it.fortunately no one was hurt.before i approach toyota, i wanted his report detailing how the brake failed.i've yet to see it.i 'm not comfortable approaching the dealer, nor toyota, without some authoritative backing.the brake needs to be fixed.the bumper and slight body damage needs to be repaired .i was never "walked through" it at the dealer.nor do i have anything that says the pre-delivery inspection was performed.i don'tknow if the dealer is mandated to walk one through the car or what if any, inspection is supposed to be performed and documented for the customer.what is in place to ensure a new caris not unsafe?i would really appreciate any response you may deem appropriate.i have e-mailed the toyota web site twice in an attempt to gather some informationabout the very questions i raise here.they do not appear to be responding.thanks again,i look forward to hearing from you.

Oil changed at toyota dealer, mechanic discovered rear differential leak.took the vehicle to private mechanic and discovered the rear differential leak was caused by rust to the body.the 2004 tacoma had only 27,000 original miles which was brought new.web search discovered 20 complaints at least on the differential rusting thru. Talking to the mechanic reveal this can be a catastrophic event on a highway with the wheels locking up causing fatalities.toyota dealers contacted provided no help or did not return phone calls.
My 2004 toyota tacoma double cab prerunner v6 sr5 has 18,000miles and has had the following problem for a while. I did not notice it until about 2 months after i had purchased the vehicle. Which tells me that the problem could be a progressive issue. The truck continues to show an increase in the problem. Problem description: when driving the tacoma down the road the tacoma drives fine. But when approaching an intersection where the vehicle is brought to a complete stop is when the following occurs. The vehicle will shift to the rear and a jerk sound is heard and felt. When releasing the brake on the vehicle you will feel and hear another more intense jerk. When you press on the throttle pedal to move forward from an intersection the vehicle displays yet another jerk. All of these feels as if it is coming from the rear. I took the truck to the dealership for it's regular maintence and questioned the service advisor about this issue. I was told in a very "i don't have time for you manner" it's a tacoma it will always do that. I can't nor will i accept that answer.
Both rear axel seals leak gear oil onto and into the rear brake drums which substantially reduce the effectiveness of the rear brakes. This condition began around the 60,000 mile mark and will continue indefinitely until the gear lube is all drained off, which then will most certainly cause severe power train damage.
My 2004 toyota tacoma was recalled in 2012.the recall letter stated that in certain states where road salt is used to manage winter driving conditions, the potential existed for premature rust/corrosion of the frame.i brought the truck in to the dealership where it was then determined that the frame should be replaced.six months later i noticed that the rear differential housing was leaking.why didn't the recall cover these components, which are located in the same general area and subject to the same corrosive conditions as the frame, leaf springs, control arms, etc., all of which were replaced?if the fluid drains from the housing as a result of rust/corrosion, the potential exists for the drivetrain to lock up, especially at higher speeds, resulting in an obviously dangerous situation.no real options exist to address the issue aside from replacing the differential housing, a repair that costs several thousand dollars.my complaint is that toyota chose not to cover the replacement of all parts necessary in order to insure the safe operation of the vehicle in light of the premature rust/corrosion issue, nor did they raise the issue in any way.i cannot imagine how toyota could be unaware of this condition.
Failure of the drive shaft bearing on a 2004 toyota tacomaprerunner p/u. Replacement part $1,500. Vehicle mileage 70,700.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that when driving 50 mph or more in fifth gear, the vehicle would sporadically engage in neutral without warning.the failure consistently recurred in colder weather. The contact would have to decelerate before the vehicle would engage back into fifth gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who inspected the failure and advised that there were no problems with the vehicle and that there were no recalls for the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 116,000.
Extremly loud lifters(valve noise).
After driving approximately 10 miles in a heavy, wet snow, shifter on automatic transmission could not be moved past reverse into park.parking brake could not be pulled.blockage of both components felt quite solid.because vehicle could not be put into park, ignition could not be turned off and key removed.vehicle could not have been left on a slope without a chock block.after snow fell out/melted all systems returned to normal operation.
Vehicle has 113,000 miles on it but is undriveable because frame is rusted through.
Frame:i had my tacoma in for work (the clutch would not return fully to the up position) and the dealer (tj toyota, potsdam, ny) said there were holes in the frame.there was one on the left side near there sway bar and two on the right side just in front of the passenger door.the dealer called toyota and toyota said the program for undercoating the frame ended in december and they would not do anything.i bought this truck in january 2011 from the dealer (tj toyota, potsdam ny) and they did not undercoat the frame before they sold the truck to me (with 77,500 mi).i am currently fighting with toyota and because my truck cant pass inspection (which expires today)i can not legally drive my truck to work and there for cant work because i am a mechanic and work out of my truck.
Drove vehicle down a paved road in the snow.transmission linkage froze up in drive when vehicle was parked.had to drive vehicle directly to dealer.dealer only thawed out the linkage.now everytime it snows, linkage freezes up.
After driving in wet/heavy snow i cannot shift into reverse or park.without shifting into park the ignition key cannot be turned all the way off or removed.i had to disconnect the battery cable to prevent the battery from dying while the snow melted.
Purchased new 2004 toyota tacoma on 1/24/05. At 1,577.8 miles, right rear brake drum and wheel covered with gear oil. Repaired at toyota of greenfield, ma. 01302, phone 413-772-0231 2/17/05. Began leaking again on 2/21/05, at 1844.6 miles. Returned to greenfield on 2/28/05 at 2284 miles. Contacted dealer again on 4/8/05 at 67345.9 miles brake drum and tire still covered with oil. Dealer said keep driving it and the leak will go away. Contacted toyota consumer service on 4/14/05 case #[xxx]. Received no follow up correspondence form fabiola. Vehicle continued to leak gear oil and handle poorly when braking. Contacted new dealer(toyota of colchester, ct.) on 5/27/05. Vehicle repaired on 6/2/05 at 8,188 miles. Contacted dealer again on 6/29/05 at 9085.1 miles. Vehicles was picked up on 7/11/05. Tries rotated on vehicle on 9/26/05 at 17,266.4 miles. Found oil on brake shoes and inside of brake drum severely glazed. New case filed on 7/28/05 case # [xxx] with salvadore. I am still driving a vehicle with the integrity of the braking system is compromised. And have not received a reasonable resolution to this problem from toyota motor company. Is it a common practice for an auto maker to let a consumer knowingly drive an unsafe vehicle. Unfortunately i am still paying on a brand new vehicle that i do not feel safe driving. The regional field service technician, joe lacefield from toyota motor company has been unavailable by phone for the last week 1-973-464-0938. I would like my money returned for this vehicle in full. I feel that i have been more than patient in trying to resolve this matter with toyota motor company. When coming to a stop, after releasing the brake to move foward there is a jolt, (sometimes so severe you would think you where hit from behind) other times it is minor. It has occurred since when i purchased my vehicle about a year ago.have been told that it is a common issue with the double cab, with a two part drive shaft.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the transmission rear differential was corroded and leaking transmission fluid while the local mechanic performed routine maintenance. #1. 2004 tacoma dbl cab trd: i'm on my 3rd set of rotors and drums at just 40,000 miles.each set of rotors warped at just over 10,000 miles causing the expected pulsing and bouncing.i'm expecting the 3rd set to do the same.#2.since about 10,000 miles, i have experienced a "thumping" with a corresponding jolt of the gear shift upon finishing a breaking cycle.this also happens occasionally when releasing the foot brake.sometimes it is quite loud and violent.i am aware that all the late model automatics do this.the factory has acknowledged that there is a problem because their "fix" was to drill a hole in the two-piece drive shaft to "vent" the trapped air.this very temporarily solved the problem.again today, the dealer acknowledged the "thump" and told me that this is "the way the truck is supposed to operate" and that i should "change my braking habits".on a 15 minute test drive it probably doesn't seem too bad.but i have to drive the vehicle all the time and it is very annoying (and this was not happening when i test drove the vehicle before i purchased it).perhaps this is not a "safety" issue, but it is insulting to be told that this is "normal".they must think i'm an idiot or something.just because all the late model tacomas do it, does not make it right!it's so arrogant for them to expect us to live with this defect in design.i also believe that this same problem is related to the sometimes violent shifts especially from 1st to 2nd gear.#3.there is also a vibration that comes up through the steering wheel at about 40 miles per hour.it is the frequency of the drive shaft, not the tires.i can always tell when i'm at 40 mph without even looking at the speedometer.

- the contact has a 2004 toyota tacoma truck. The contact lived in a rural area and she needed to be able to go into 4-wheel drive, but when she attempted to go into 4-wheel drive the vehiclemade a grinding noise and would not go into 4-heel drive.the dealer attempted to repair the vehicle once before unsuccessfully.the unsuccessful repair was done under warranty.she took the vehicle back to them to let them know that it was still not working because they didn't fix it correctly. The service manager refused to fix the vehicle even though it was still under warranty.the service manager suggested that she put the vehicle into park and then shift into 4-wheel drive instead of following the owner's manual method which stated that the vehicle should be put in neutral when shifting into 4 wheel drive, and the service manager suggested that the vehicle owner put the vehicle into park and then shift into 4 wheel drive.every 3,000 miles when she went for an oil change she complained about the operation of the transmission and the grinding and clanking noises that it was making.the contact stated that the vehicle normally made the clanking noises when the vehicle was coming to a stop, and grinding noises when she attempted to go into 4-wheel drive.the current mileage was 40,000 miles.update 4/25/07

December 26, 2013- going east on warner rd. At 45 miles per hour from kyrene and warner.minimal traffic on the road.at warner and bullmoose a car did not stop at the stop sign at bullmoose to pull out onto warner.i hit the camaro, t-boned him.my air bags did not go off, my seat belt tightened, then popped off of me at some point during the crash.i just know that when i stopped and pulled over my seat belt was off.that concerned me a lot.that was the first thing i noticed when i came to a stop! the gentleman that i hit said it was his fault and he had a broken rib, but other than that said he was okay.i hurt and was bruised across my shoulder blade, and chest.i had my toyota tacoma towed to power collision center that toyota uses.i went into to them and told them my concerns about the seat belt popping.they said they did not see anything wrong with it, that maybe my sweater was caught up in it. First of all, i was not wearing a sweater!and i am very strict about my seat belt and others in my vehicle that they are properly seat belted!at times the seat belt did not tighten when i applied the brakes.i think just to humor me they replaced the driver's seat belt.then he said they get worn with being connected and unconnected many times.my question is why do we not know that we should replace our seat belts, like we do our tires.i am very concerned about my seat belts in my toyota tacoma.

The seats of the 2004 toyota tacoma have hard, projecting lumber supports which are not adjustible. These permanent lumber supports place abnormal pressure on the lower back of the driver.after having this vehicle for a period of several months, i felt low back pain when driving. Reducing the prominence of these lumbar supports at a local upholstery shop has relieved the problem.the cost was $50 per seat, but toyota refuses to reimburse this cost under the warranty of the new truck. I am an abih-certified industrial hygienist and a bcpe- certified ergonomist associate.i believe that these non-adjustible lumber supports in the toyota tacoma can cause permanent injury and pain to the lower back of drivers, because they are so prominent and not adjustible. No other type of vehicle has such prominent lumber supports.i believe that they have only been installed in the 2004 toyota tacoma and not in previous versions of this truck. Drivers of the 2004 toyota tacoma may not realize the cause of their lower back pain until it causes permanent damage and pain to their backs.

Going 35 miles an hour the vehicle will start to pull to the side and the ball joint will come out also the abs sensor cable will brake and you will have to replace it a $2500 dollar spence for a toyota malfunction in the suspension i have a friend in california that has one a year early model than mine a 2003 toyota tacoma and he told me about this problem had happen to him in the freeway about 60 mphto him a had to learn the hard way if you have a toyota tacoma pleasei am warning you to have the ball joint replace before its to late the new ball joints are warranty for life but i will check in to that if i still have the pick up in four years
Purchased 2004 tacoma in 2016. Dealership of purchase said vehicle was not affected by frame recall and did not inform me that it was under warranty for frame related issues. Since purchasing vehicle i've encountered countless frame related issues and have put thousands into frame related repairs. I contacted toyota in 2018 on several occasions to ask about frame warranty. Toyota said vehicle was not covered. Did not look up vin or any other information related to vehicle. I contacted toyota again this year to see if there's anything that can be done as frame issues were becoming significant and beyond my financial means to keep fixing. Toyota notified me at this time that the vehicle had in fact been under warranty but that now the warranty had expired 6 months prior (which was within the timeframe that i had initially contacted toyota). Toyota told me that frame had been undercoated with corrosion resistance treatment in 2010 and warranty was good for 10 years (until 2020). Because dealership of purchase failed to comply with a warranty letter and toyota also failed to notify me as i was not the original owner, i was not aware that i couldhave had the frame fixed. Which i would have if i had known. Now because of no fault of my own, the warranty window has closed and toyota is not willing to rectify the situation. I still owe over $3k on a vehicle i paid over $11k for and have put $4k-$8k into for repairs. Frame is rotting faster than i can fix it and is now unsafe to drive and ineligible for trade-in or sale because the vehicle is essentially worthless at this point. Frame bolts are now rotted, tailpipe and exhaust fell off just this morning due to corrosion, suspension is corroded, brackets are rotting off frame, flakes of corroded metal are in piles beneath vehicle- and these are just the most recent issues.
Takata recall, i am writing this complaint because iown a 2004 toyota tacoma . On november 2nd i was driving home , was at a 4way stop, once it was my turn to go i accelerated as usual and had my tire on the drivers side detach completely from the ball joint causing me to nearly wreck my truck, if i had been going faster i would have, this was one of the most scariest experiences i have ever had driving! it cost me nearly 1000.00 dollars to fix and now i am having to have the other passenger side fixed because the mechanic says it's hammered...i noticed that over 150,000 tacoma's were recalled due to this exact problem, when i entered my vin it says i have no i repaired recalls on my vehicle! which obviously is not true, or my balk joints would be good to go, i have never taken my truck off road or even had it in 4 wheel drive, i have not beat on my truck i take excellent care of my vehicle, i feel this ball joint problem should of been part of your recall , i could of been severely hurt or even died as well as my son who was riding with me, thank god we weren't...i am prepared to turn you into the bbb if i dont get a reasonable response
Abs actuator assy fell off the vehicle, it was mounted on right rear axle housing, and banged around vehicle and ground.vehicle appears to be ok and assy is held in place by wire.is it safe to drive?
Lever assembly and brake drum for real wheel emergency brakes rusted to the point that the emergency brake is inoperable (seized). Condition has caused rear brake to be partially engaged whether parking brake is pulled or not. This wears out the rear brake pads very fast, and makes it impossible to apply the emergency brake on an incline.will not prevent the vehicle from rolling down hill, nor will it stop the vehicle during an emergency application of the brake. It is no longer functioning as an emergency brake.
Both rear axel seals leak gear oil onto and into the rear brake drums which substantially reduce the effectiveness of the rear brakes. This condition began around the 60,000 mile mark and will continue indefinitely until the gear lube is all drained off, which then will most certainly cause severe power train damage.

The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma.while driving 45 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal.the steering wheel began shaking and the accelerator pedal felt rough and was vibrating.the contact heard metal rubbing against metal.the contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and abrake inspection was performed.the mechanic stated that the rotors were warped and the rear brakes failed because they were improperly adjusted.the contact later took the vehicle to toyota and they could not make any repairs because the warranty expired.the contact informed toyota that the repair was previously performed while the vehicle was still under warranty; however, the failure has recurred.the current mileage was 45,500 and failure mileage was 44,500.updated 01-11-08.updated 12/12/07
December 16, 2006 - clear sunny day, great road conditions.i was 40 feet behind a vehicle going 35 mph when a suv slammed on brakes.my 2004 toyota prerunner brakes went to the floor and my truck would not stop.after hitting the suv and coming to a stop, i released my foot from the brake and the pedal went back to it's normal position.
While driving at any speed, in inclement weather the brakes failed.the driver applied the brake pedal and the brakes failed to stop completely.please provide further details.this information was provided by the consumers daughter.*er
Purchased new 2004 toyota tacoma on 1/24/05. At 1,577.8 miles, right rear brake drum and wheel covered with gear oil. Repaired at toyota of greenfield, ma. 01302, phone 413-772-0231 2/17/05. During a 23000 mile servicing, camelback toyota informed me i would need to have the brakes serviced, because 95% of the pads have worn down.i am aware of a recall on these trucks lower ball joint, but the service agent did not tell me that at the time i brought it in.i was never informed by the dealer of this recall. Now, i am being charged for repairs, while the vehicle is still under warranty, for brake system failure (excessive/premature pad wear), and i believe this damage is because of the recall suspension issue.

#1. 2004 tacoma dbl cab trd: i'm on my 3rd set of rotors and drums at just 40,000 miles.each set of rotors warped at just over 10,000 miles causing the expected pulsing and bouncing.i'm expecting the 3rd set to do the same.#2.since about 10,000 miles, i have experienced a "thumping" with a corresponding jolt of the gear shift upon finishing a breaking cycle.this also happens occasionally when releasing the foot brake.sometimes it is quite loud and violent.i am aware that all the late model automatics do this.the factory has acknowledged that there is a problem because their "fix" was to drill a hole in the two-piece drive shaft to "vent" the trapped air.this very temporarily solved the problem.again today, the dealer acknowledged the "thump" and told me that this is "the way the truck is supposed to operate" and that i should "change my braking habits".on a 15 minute test drive it probably doesn't seem too bad.but i have to drive the vehicle all the time and it is very annoying (and this was not happening when i test drove the vehicle before i purchased it).perhaps this is not a "safety" issue, but it is insulting to be told that this is "normal".they must think i'm an idiot or something.just because all the late model tacomas do it, does not make it right!it's so arrogant for them to expect us to live with this defect in design.i also believe that this same problem is related to the sometimes violent shifts especially from 1st to 2nd gear.#3.there is also a vibration that comes up through the steering wheel at about 40 miles per hour.it is the frequency of the drive shaft, not the tires.i can always tell when i'm at 40 mph without even looking at the speedometer.
2004 toyota tacoma. Consumer writes in regards to brake line rupture. *tgwthe consumer stated the dealer would not replace the brake line under warranty, because the frame caused the brake line to rupture. Toyota informed the consumer, a recall was issued in 2010, where the frame was supposed to be sprayed and treated. The consumer was informed the extended warranty had expired.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated he was driving 20 mph and completing a right turn when he applied the brakes, but the brake pedal abnormally went down to the floorboard. The vehicle did not respond. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who advised the contact that two brakes lines were fractured and would need replacing. The mechanic then advised the contact that there was a manufacturer's recall for frame corrosion, and referred the contact to an authorized dealer. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer however, the technician was unable to confirm frame corrosion. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 80,000. Updated 12/4/13
2004 toyota tacoma x-tra cab, 4cyl. With a/t developed power steering leak at 51k.the dealer diagnosed the problem as bad seals in the rack and pinion.when i replaced the rack and pinion, i discovered that a pinch bolt in the steering column had rubbed a hole in the metal power steering feed line going to the rack and pinion.this issue was brought to the dealers attention but the dealer refused to acknowledge the problem and i have been without the use of my '04 toyota truck for 5 months.
I have a 2004 completely stock toyota tacoma that has never been off road with 36000 miles on it.the steering column upper shaft at the slip joint below the tilt ball joint has become loose.there is play in the steering now causing control of the truck to become less and less precise.i am not the only one with this problem as many people have complained about it on many different toyota tacoma forums.people have had to replace the upper steering shafts but the problem comes back within a few thousand miles usually.toyota needs to recall and redesign a much sturdier part that keeps the steering play at original specs for control and safety.
My 2004 tacoma has ~127,500 miles and has been subject to frame corrosion and spare tire retainer corrosion recalls. My dealer recently advised that the left rear leaf spring is broken which is resulting in an unpredictable response when driving, especially in 4wd in snowy weather.this lack of steering control is a safety issue.i believe this fracture is directly linked to the corrosion issues in the tacoma frame and suspension design on the tacoma.toyota usa has reviewed the case and is unwilling to cover the cost of the leaf spring repairs.this is despite an extensive recall on 2005+up tacoma's for distressed leaf springs.
On january 19, 2011 at approximately 7:15 am, i was driving approximately 15 mph on a dirt road, came around an approximate 90 degree right hand turn heading down hill, slid on mud or ice and hit a rut.after all wheels had passed through the rut the vehicle drove up and over a small rise (bump) in the road. After coming over the rise, the right front of the vehicle dove into the dirt and the truck came to an abrupt stop.i turned off the truck and got out of the vehicle to inspect the front end.the right front ball joint had completely separated from ... ??? ... What ever it is supposed to be attached to.the right front wheel was perpendicular to the wheel well with the inside leaning toward the front of the vehicle.i have several photographs of the vehicle taken moments after the equipment failure.i'm glad this happened where it did because only a few miles further into my trip to work, i would have been traveling 75 mph on the interstate.amen!i had never received any notification from toyota concerning recall no. 50j.i only accidentally came across the information while surfing the web within the past week.
Steering wheel shakes violently when driving over bumps in road, feels likedriver could loose control of vehicle,or steering component could fall off.
I own a 2004 toyota tacoma, all factory standard, very clean, with about 80,000 miles on it.the steering wheel has a very noticeable amount of play in it (about 0.5 to 1" at the rim).the play causes rattling on rough roads, and reduced control on smooth highways.the source of the problem has been narrowed down to the steering shaft.i just researched the issue on line and found a large number of mentions of that very same issue on tacomas and 4-runners.i consider this a manufacturing defect and want toyota to repair it.i assume it could also be a safety issue as it relates to steering.what are my options?
Letter from congressman tonko on behalf of constituent re 2004 toyota tacoma recall. *ldthe consumer stated the vehicle could not be inspected due to frame rust. The consumer was not notified of all recalls. The last recall expired; therefore, the consumer was ineligible for assistance.
Power rack and pinion system failure, bad seals in unit, unit replaced under warranty, failed again, at 10k miles on january 14, 2014.
My 2004 tacoma has very low mileage (around 64,000 miles).the steering wheel feels very loose and has alot of abnormal play.driving down the road, the steering wheel shakes, vibrates, and rattles around all the time and becomes really bad on rough roads.when there is a slight bump in the road, turning a corner, being blown around in a little wind, or trying to avoid other cars, the trucks steering is so loose that i consider it a major safety hazard.i've done my research online and have found no recalls or tsb's for this problem from toyota, but i have found multiple solutions to the problem which all relate to a poorly designed steering shaft on the column which wears out and results in loose steering.we shouldn't have to resort to the only known fix of welding the two parts of the shaft together.someone should really be concerned about this as it's a major safety hazard.
Dt*:the contact stated the rack and pinion steering has been replaced twice due to cracks.the vehicle has been taken to a service dealer who determined that there was a faulty bushing.after the second repair, there was a lot of play in the steering, causing reduced control. The steering rod also failed. Updated 04/11/06.
Frame is rusty beyond usage.as i accelerate the bed of the truck flexes so i can see it in the rearview mirror
I have a 2004 toyota tacoma pickup truck. This has had a very bad for a year. The other day the mount for the right rear broke and the front end of the rear spring was rusted away from the frame.this is the same problem my 1996 toyota pickup had. That onethe bought back and i now have this one. The rest of the truck is pretty good.the rack and pinion steering also rusted away and started to leak fluid. This leak was under the right mount of the rack. This was also fixed by me. This is my work truck and personal way of getting around. These are both very serious safety problems !!!i contacted the ceo of toyota, toyota sales in califorina and girard toyota. They said i slipped through the cracks and i did not get any notices !!!they are putting tons of frames on for other peoples but i have been singled out some how and i cannot get one. This problem has been going on for 20 years !!!this with out question should be a recall and all items concerned should be replaced free of charge.please help with this serious problem.thank you.
When driving home from having the truck serviced, the front drivers wheel broke and crashed into a curb. After taking it to toyota and calling there help desk, theye confirmed it had a lower and upper ball joint failure. At this time toyota will not honor this recall and will not provide any assistance with the repairs.
Complete loss of steering.
Loose steering. Lots of play in the wheel, had to have the steering rack bushings replaced at 48k miles because the rack would just move around and the truck was uncontrollable. After replacing the rack, sway bar bushings, and struts @ 48000 mile with no offroad driving the steering is still extremely loose. Is you hit a bump while in a curve on the freeway you feel like you are just along for the ride with almost no control. Dealership advised no recalls and truck is out of warranty. They could not pinpoint what the problem is but stated it could the rack, the steering shaft, or bad ball joints. I had an 88 toyota 4x4 that i just sold to a friend this year, i drove that truck as hard as possible offroad and never had any of these problems replace bushings and shocks when needed but never felt out of control. Toyota need to fix these tacoma steering issues.
We are the second owners of a 2004 tacoma, purchased 4 years ago.it currently has 104,000 miles on it.the underside is rusted out!we just got the list of things to fix this morning (rusty muffler and steering components needing replacement) and are devastated.my husband was told he could lose control of steering at any moment if we don't make the repairs of $4000+.the steering is very loose and not steady.i opened a case this morning, but fear because it's a 2004, they won't hold themselves accountable.why would they design a truck that looks great on the outside, but becomes a rust bucket on the inside?aren't they worried about the safety of their toyota drivers and others?
2004 tacomarack and pinion system was replaced twice per the suggestion of the mechanic. Mechanic informed consumer that the steering rod was also broken.although this part was broken the dealer returned the vehicle back to the consumer because they didn't have the part available to repair it.the dealer said there was no danger in driving the vehicle with a steering broken rod.
Loose steering on 2004 toyota tacoma 4x4.isolated looseness to upper steering shaft spline connection.tack welded spline to fix play in steering shaft.my steering had gotten progressively worse so after a lot of examination i found what appears to be the problem.i would like toyota to come out with a redesigned steering column.i have taken vehicle to the dealer about this with no resolution from them.
1) power steering fluid began to leak from area of rack and pinion.2) toyota dealer mis-diagnosed problem as leaking seals in rack and pinion.3)leak occurred in metal power steering line (routed too close to steering gear) , where friction from pinch bolt in steering gear has worn a hole in metal power steering line.4)this causes all fluid to leak from power steering system.5)2004 tacoma sr-5 xtra cab, 2.4 litre 4cyl./auto trans, 51k.
Purchased 2004 tacoma for $18,000, from right toyota in scottsdale, az in june 2006, received bill for $25,000+!!so much for agreeing on a price!i also purchased an extended warranty for $2200 (included in the $25,000).weeks after getting the truck i noticed the rear passenger side seemed to give when turning corners.i assumed i needed to adjust to driving a truck with hard suspension.unfortunately it persisted so i took it into camelback toyota and had them check it out.they assured me that everything was in tip top shape, i got the feeling they never really checked anything out.they just assumed that it would be unusual to see this stuff breakdown, a valid thought, but they were of no help.here it is now, a year and a half later, and its just getting worse!so i took it into earnhardt toyota and the first 2 visits they performed needed front end alignments and tire balancing.they looked at it recently after me yelling at them, and told me that my entire suspension system needs to be replaced.apparently my leaf springs are bad ($1700 purchase and install), and front struts ($650), and rear shocks ($450) as well!so $2800 to repair a truck that i purchased directly from toyota not 1.5 years ago, and even purchased a warranty.they assured me that everything was covered under the warranty.they lied.now i owe $18000 on a $14000 truck!steer clear of right toyota, they totally scammed me.
Noise and excess play in steering wheel when driving over bumpy surfaces.found upper steering shaft slip joint improperly machined /crimped resulting in abnormal noise and excess play when driving under certain conditions.dealer replaced upper steering shaft with and identical part.this part has not been redesigned and will fail again.part is not available as it was replaced under warranty and the dealer kept the old part.have found from others through the internet that this play and noise is very common but no one knew the cause until recently.
1) normal driving, on road and off of highway on dirt roads2) loose steering shaft, rattles on rough roads or when hitting obstacles in road.3) dealer claims suspension modifications have voided my warranty on steering components. Dealer refuses to do warranty work on vehicle for non related components.
Power steering pump seal failed at 57000 miles. Failure noticed by (low fluid) pump noise on 09/19/06. Pump replaced by dealer on 09/23/06 under extended warranty. Dealer stated that they had seen several power steering pump failures with less mileage.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that there was extensive rust and corrosion pertaining to the frame, which affected the rack and pinion. The vehicle was not diagnosed by a dealer. An independent mechanic diagnosed that the rack and pinion and the frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 151,000.
2004 toyota tacoma will not pass inspection due to worn steering rack bushings. According to my mechanic (and confirmed as plausible by dealership service dept), this was caused by defective lower ball joints. Also, there is a current service/recall bulletin for just this problem. However, dealership and manufacturer representatives both insist the bulletin does not apply to my vehicle. This makes no sense as the problem exists. The bumper to bumper does not apply as the vehicle is currently 2k over.
We own a 2004 toyota tacoma. After receiving a letter from toyota about frame rust, we took our vehicle to the dealer for the requested inspection. The dealer told us that the frame has soft spots and that toyota recommended replacing the frame. We are seriously concerned about the safety of this vehicle given the fact that the structural integrity of the vehicle has been compromised. However, we question this kind of invasive repair. We want toyota to buy the truck back given the nature of this safety defect. Toyota has a defined history of defective frames in the tacoma: they bought back many 1995-2000 tacomas for the same reason. Since the 2001-2004 tacomas are experiencing the same defect -- a very serious one -- toyota needs to take responsibility and properly compensate owners like us by buying them back. We request that the nhtsa do what is necessary to require toyota to take responsibility in this matter by recalling all affected tacomas so these vehicles can be taken off the road before injury and death results. Thank you for your attention to this very serious matter.peter spangenberg

The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that when he entered the vehicle he noticed that the seat belts on both driver and passenger side were wet. The contact stated that the failure occurred whenever it rained. There was no water visible inside the vehicle and the windows were closed. The manufacturer was contacted and advised him to contact to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 48,000.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact had a repair for a recall on the frame performed (recall information not available in nhtsa database). The dealer undercoated the frame which turned into an oil base that dripped in the contact's garage and damaged it. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who advised her to contact the manufacturer. The vehicle had not been repaired again. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 81,000 and the current mileage was approximately 90,000.

I have a rust problem in the bed of my 2004 toyota tacoma and i have a 5 year warranty against manufacture defects that toyota will not honor and this is clearly a defect.
The contact owned a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced severe corrosion on the frame. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the frame needed to be coated with an anti-corrosive adhesive. The vehicle was involved in a crash while being operated at 2 mph. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard and deemed destroyed. The vehicle was repaired. Upon inspection, it was noticed that there were holes in the frame. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to it having a rebuilt title. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. There were no injuries. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.
Vehicle frame rusted to the point where it will be unsafe to drive soon. Vehicle is from a "heavy road salt use" state, but has had very limited exposure to salt during the winter months. Most times the frame has been rinsed with clean water after exposure to salt.toyota's voluntary repair period has expired, yet they acknowledge a manufacturing defect. In addition there is a recall for a similar item related to the spare tire carrier on the same vehicle.

Frame slightly bent in accident. When body shop went to pull frame to straighten out they would not do it because how badly rusted the frame was. Truck had 88,000 miles on it. Toyota will do nothing. This is my second tacoma this has happened too. They recalled my 97 tacoma because of the same issue, at least they treated me fairly on that. I was assured when i bought the second truck rust problem was fixed.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While making left and right turns, the vehicle made an abnormal noise. The origin of the noise could not be determined. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the frame was rusted, and the stabilizer bar, passenger side steering rod, struts, and shocks needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 141,678.
2004 toyota tacoma. Constituent writes regarding a cracked frame on vehicle. *ldthe consumer stated the manufacturer was notified but, denied any assistance. The consumer stated the manufacturer advised there was a recall in 2010 that expired in 2019. The previous owner did not have the repair completed.
Called toyota 2 years ago about rust on my trucks frame near the rear leaf spring mounting area. Was blown off by toyota customer care. In december was driving and the frame rails literally snapped an bowed, the only thing that saved my life while driving 70mph, on the interstate 70 between hagerstown md and hancock md, home from work was the bed contacting the cab of the truck and miraculously holding holding it up and allowing me to get it safely off the road and call my mechanic. The sheet metal of the truck is rust free and in good condition. The frame is a total loss. The truck was at toyota in 2010 and 2011 for frame inspections. This is a known issue with these trucks and now im told that toyota wont do anything about it. If they would have fixed it or addressed my concerns in 2018 or even 2019 i wouldnt have nearly crashed my truck. The idea of a safety campaign is that they know there is an issue, their was a class action suit, they have frames available and they need to replace my frame on my truck and make it safe again. It is the only truck i have i used it to take care of my dogs and my the roads to my home are very steep and a 2wd or front wheel drive will not make it in snowy or rainy weather. Toyota's case # is 2102242008, phone number to call is 1800-331-4331.
Purchased this vehicle in june of 2014. The carfax report only listed a recent recall dealing with the spare tire hanger. The carfax report did not show any other recalls, including the frame treatment, the frame replacement or the truck buy back offered by toyota. Wecompletely unaware of the recalls. Two weeks ago, the rear right shock rotted/completely broke away from the severely rusted frame. Toyota says they will do nothing because "we" didn't have it treated. However, we had no knowledge of the recall and had no way of knowing that there was a frame problem because the dealer indicated no issues, the carfax report showed nothing and we have only owned the truck for 6 months. We don't know what to do. Are we stuck with this or can we hold someone accountable for help?
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While parked, the engine warning indicator illuminated. In addition, the contact discovered a hole on the rear driver side leaf spring and it was not connected to the frame. The contact stated that the frame had rusted. The vehicle was driven to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 162,000.
Frame is perforated due to rust just in front of rear axle on both sides of vehicle. About a 1.5" x 6" hole on driver's side with a fracture of about 12" going toward rear axle. Passenger side has a fracture about 18" long in same area. Rear suspension mounts and springs are compromised. Toyota had a program to deal with issue but deadline had passed by the time i purchased vehicle. Dealer told me toyota had checked out frame issue and it passed. According to toyota i was misinformed. Toyota will not fix what is obviously a manufacturing defect that i never had the opportunity to deal with properly. Body and bed are rust free and in excellent condition. I paid 11,700 for the truck with 88,000 mi., have owned it for one year and put approx. 9,000 miles on it. It is unsafe to drive and for all intents and purposes totaled.

The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 147,000.
Thebody frame of my toyota is rusted and i was told by the dealership that toyota contacted the owners of the vehicles (effected years) to have the frames replaced.i have not be contacted by toyota about the rust and corrosion on my truck and the rust is very bad.i was told that if the frame cracks while driving, it's a major safety issue.please help!
With 115,000 mikes the frame is rusted through in several spots. This is a problem with the model for many years and toyota refuses to fix it. My mechanic has advised me that it is unsafe to drive
Excessive corrosion and holes in frame.contacted toyota corporate and two local dealerships.nothing can be done according to them since the underside was not sprayed, however tech at hartford toyota informed me that the spray is ineffective.will not honor 15 year frame warranty.
Tl-the contact owns 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated t while the vehicle was inspected the subframe was found severely corroded. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure.the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage were 108,000.rk
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While driving approximately 35 mph over some bumps in the road, the contact heard a noiseemerging from the rear of the vehicle. The contact stopped and noticed that parts of the subframe detached in the rear of the vehicle due to severe rust. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 158,000.
I was at the local tire shop getting two tires installed and i noticed that the right rear of my vehicle was not level with the left. I asked that they do an alignment to even the vehicle out and they notified me that the frame was severly rusted. I was told that there was a campain recall on thi same issue and my vin was in range. When i went to the dealership they notified me that there was another part of this recall, that they did not do, so my frame was not covered. I never received any notice of either recall. I sent a email to toyota and they called back with the same responce "you never did the ani-corrosion part of the recall so you do not qualify". I have heard of countless persons in my area that have just purchased the same age vehicle and had frame rust that got there vehicles repaired. If there is an issue with or without this corrosion spray why are only certain vehicles covered. This spray does not work and this seems like a way to get around repairing vehicles. Not to mention i never received any recall notices and they have no record of what adress the recall was even sent to.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a tire rotation. The mechanic stated that the vehicle was unsafe to be driven due to severe rust and there were holes throughoutthe entire frame. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 143,000.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a dealer for an alignment. The technician stated that the frame of the vehicle was severely rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While the vehicle was undergoing an oil change, the contact was informed that the frame was rusted. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to autoland (170 us-22, springfield township, nj 07081, (800) 288-6526) where it was confirmed that the frame was rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 1904301385. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 67,000.
I purchased a used 2004 toyota tacoma 4x4 4 years ago in ny. I moved to ma 2 years ago and took truck to a cape cod toyota dealer and asked them to change oil and tell me if there were any issues i needed to deal with. To make a long story short they told me about the spare tire rust recall and made the repair. When we picked up the truck they gave it a clean bill of health. They then said "by the way, you have a tiny hole in frame that may need to be taken care of at some point-not urgent." fast forward 2 years- a garaged truck that only had an additional 7,000 miles. We took it for the ma state inspection and it failed. They said it needed a new muffler. We took it to our local cape cod mechanic who called and said the problem was much bigger- the entire frame is rusted out and it is not safe to drive. We filed a complaint with toyota corporate and they won't do anything. The dealer called to say come pick it up even though they know it is not safe to drive. How much is a life worth? obviously toyota doesn't care. Help please!!!
Takata recall frame is rusted
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that upon inspection of the vehicle, it was discovered that the undercarriage showed extensive corrosion to the sub frame of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics who informed the contact that they were unable to fix the sub frame of the vehicle. The manufacturer was contacted and the contact was informed that the prior owner declined to have the corrosion repaired on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 141,000.
I took my 2004 tacoma with <92,500 miles into the mechanic to get serviced yesterday. I asked him to check it over for a road trip we were planning this weekend. He called back and said it was unfit to drive because there was about 1 and 1/2 feet and 4 inches wide part of the frame is rusted out above the rear axle. I am trying to consult my case manager at toyota, but he conveniently called the wrong number this morning and has not returned my call yet.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the frame was rusted on the vehicle and had perforations all over. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the issue to a local dealer who advised that nothing could be done. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 134,000.
While driving approximately 10 mph over a speed bump, the spare tire located on the trunk detached and rolled into the street. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (checkered flag toyota in virginia beach, virginia) where it was diagnosed that the failure occurred due to severe rust and corrosion on the subframe. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 263,000.
The frame has many holes in it. Was just told by mechanic when went in for rear differential work. They as i were surprised as the body shows no signs of rust. They did not complete work as they said frame so bad it is unsafe. I have owned other 2003 and 2004 tacoma's over the years which had frames recalled. This one does not have the frame recall and i am wondering is this a mistake or why not?

I own a 2004 toyota tacoma pickup witch was included in the frame recall. At the time of this recall i was having health issues that prevented me from following though on the recall. After i got back on my feet i called the toyota dealer in berlin vermont and was told it was to late to have it done. I then called toyota and spoke witha gentleman, i told this person all about my health issues that had prevented me from getting this taken care of. He also told me it was to late to have it looked at and repaired. I then asked him what would happen if the frame broke when driving and caused a crash or a death and he told me that was my problem. I now have a recall about a spare tire hanger that may rust off allowing the spare tire to fall off. It would seem to me that this is just a continuation of the frame problem that i was told i was to late for..i have run my own auto repair shop for over 30 years so i am note unfamiliar with autos or dealer. Thank you for hearing me out and any help you could give me would be very nice. Updated 1/7/16
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires); however, the manufacturer and the dealer refused to remedy the recall due to excessive corrosion of the subframe. The contact stated that the vehicle received an anti-corrosion coating treatment prior to the recall notification. The contact was informed by the manufacturer that the anti-corrosion treatment was performed outside of the recall; therefore, nullifying the recall remedy to the lift plate for the spare tire. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 99,876.
The frame is rusting out
2004 toyota tacoma, purchased new from california dealer. Majority of vehicle life spent in cold states. Excessive corrosion to frame has now led to cracking of the frame. Only 77,000 miles and now unsafe to drive. Vehicle was serviced at two different toyota dealers during active period of service ('recall') when toyota was replacing frames and adding protective coatings on frames of this model and year. No such actions were taken on my vehicle. Now toyota claims no record of prior service at all. This vehicle is not included in the recent class action involving 2005 models and later. Condition was discovered during stationary inspections at a local auto repair shop, and confirmed by inspection at toyota dealer.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the frame prematurely rusted. The vehicle was unable to pass an inspection due to the failure. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and provided no remedy. The approximate failure mileage was 147,000.
I bought my toyota truck in may 2016. I had the truck serviced at a local shop. The service manager stated the truck had a lot of rust noted on the frame and other parts underneath the truck. I took the truck to my local toyota dealer to have the spare tire hangar recall taken care of. The service manager told me they could not service the truck because of the extensive rust noted. He stated "if you were my family member i would not let you drive it" because the frame and other parts were very rusty. The truck has been parked ever since unable to drive due to safety concerns that the frame will collapse. Toyota corporate will not agree to fix the truck.they state the truck frame rust replacement offer has long passed.
Was rear-ended yesterday.upon inspection by insurance inspector, the inspector stated the frame failed, cross-member broke off frame due to excessive rust and rear of frame was rotted. This vehicle had received frame recall, but was only offered undercoating, which was done, but was obviously not done on rear of frame.insurance inspector knew of this recall and stated toyota should not be allowed to get away with this.the truck was in excellent condition before accident (other than frame).due to frame rot, instead of being fixable, it was deemed total loss and will now cost significant financial burden.called local toyota dealer i have dealt with before and their customer relations director went to inspect and noted rear part of frame rusted out, but that's where all damage occurred due to being rear-ended, so didn't offer much other than it was an "interesting situation".then had the nerve to ask if one of his sales people could call me to buy another toyota.
The frame has rusted and the dealership is unwilling to replace even though there continues to be recalls on more modern vehicles and another will be beginning soon for newer models.no notice was received by me about this problem.not sure if this was a technical service bulletin or a full recall, but i cannot understand how a major problem with the frame would not qualify for a full recall.the truck was sold by toyota suggesting 300,000 miles easily.i have less than half of that and the truck will soon be unsafe to drive because of a faulty frame.
Frame rot on the mid chassis up to the front chassis where the frame begins to curve inward towards the engine. Frame rot is on left and right side of the vehicles inner frame. Failed state inspection.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. After the vehicle was taken to be inspected, the technician informed the contact that the frame of the vehicle was rusted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires) but the recall repair was unable to be performed due to excessive rusting. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 121,000.
Frame rusted.

The vehicle was driven to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the frame was severely rusted and needed replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The frame of the tacoma is severely rusted. Rust easily falls off the frame of the truck. Tacoma models after 2005 received recall notifications and fixes from toyota, but the 2004 models have not received any notice even though they exhibit more frame rot and rusting.
My low mileage toyota truck has both front and rear bumpers rotting through from the back to the front . There is a hole coming through the chrome and the back side is completely full of crumpling rust. These bumpers are going to offer little to no protection in a accident situation . I believe this should be included in the rust recalls of these trucks please make it happen before someone gets seriously injured.thanks ,[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Frame is completely rusted, toyota has replaced frames on thousands of these vehicles but wont replace mine because my vin is not in their "program" because it was originally sold in hawaii. Yet dealer tells me car is unsafe to drive.

The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While inspecting underneath the vehicle, it was discovered that there was severe corrosion that caused a hole on the rear bumper. Also, the brake cable was completely rusted. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the subframe was corroded and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired under a recall back in 2010, but the failure persisted. The specifics of the recall were not provided. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 190,000.
Extreme rust on left side of the frame with extensive loss of metal.contacted two toyota dealerships and toyota corporation. They refuse to fix the problem.all documented here:https://www.facebook.com/groups/1637547983201647/
The frame is rotted and a certified toyotamechanic said that the frame was severally rottedand was a safety hazard and was told to take the vehicle off the road becauseit was unsafe to drive.the truck is still worth $8-10,000 and we are out the money.there was a service campaign, but no safety recall.we did not receive a letter on either. If i did not look under the truck to inspect a noise, i would never have known the frame was rotted to the degree that it was. (see pictures) i would have continued to drive the vehicle and put myself and anyone else on the road in harms way.this problem needed to be brought to our attention; however, no one can tell uswhy we never received the notification of this defect. It is my opinion that this situation is very dangerous and should be a safety recall with no expiration.please see attached letters and photos of our attempt to correct the problem with the vehicle with no results.please look into this matter as we feel it can save lives.thank you for your time and attention.
I had tires rotated, technician told me frame is extremely rusted(tacoma problem) big safety problem.toyota told me they would check it out for 98,-- dollars. I don't think that's right. Toyota problem
Frame rusting out even after having undercoat sprayed in previous recall, after looking online i have found numerous people with the same year and model having their frame replaced by toyota under a recall, but i have been told repeatedly that there is not recall and toyota will do nothing.
I just wanted to tell how utterly useless i think this administration is. I wrote in with a complaint on my 2004 toyota tacoma which has a rusted frame and too dangerous to drive. There were numerouscomplaints just like mine and still are all over the internet and you have done absolutely nothing. Toyota refuses to fix my truck and i never received a notice for my truck frame as well as a lot of others. If i had kept driving this truck me or others could have been killed. I have a conscious unlike this office and toyota. I contacted my senator and asked him how many complaints do you people need to do something. I guess somebody has to die first which is sinful and sad!!!

Frame and some associated components are rusted almost thru. Truck appears to be very unsafe. Toyota does not show it in recall list. Please help.
Frame rust. The frame is almost completely rusted in half. The leaf springs where they connect to the frame has sunk into the frame from the rotting of the frame.the truck was going 75 mph down the highway when it happened.a loud bang and terrible jerk back.
The frame has rusted so bad that you can poke your fingers through it.also the frame is rusted around where rear shocks mount causing the passenger rear shock to come apart. Vehicle is not safe to drive.contacted toyota about the problem and they refuse to do anything even though this vehicle was part of a recall due to rust issues.

Bought a 2004 tacoma not knowing about the frame recall. The dealer i bought the vehicle from had puddied the frame to make it look solid. Now i've got an unsafe vehicle. Something that could kill people shouldn't expire.or toyota should buy it back since whoever owned it before never took care of the problem. There are probably hundreds of these on our streets today like this!
Had 2004 frame recall tested by dealer and they applied the undercoating in 2012. The truck will not pass inspection due to holes rotting through frame and excessive corrosion. The truck is in perfect shape otherwise as total body was repainted at the time of the undercoating. This terrible information to hear when you purchased the truck brand new and planned on passing it down. Its 11 years old and a lawn ornament.

Re: defective frame on 2004 toyota tacoma extend cabdear sir or madam:i am reaching out to you for assistance regarding the defective frame on my 2004 toyota tacoma extended cab. I purchased this vehicle used in 2012 from a private owner. Please see attached letter.

My 2004 toyota tacoma has frame damage underneath (picture enclosed)i learned of a 15 year manufacturer extended warranty on the frame of my truck within the last few months. I put in a complaint to toyota (i lost claim number) and was told the warranty had expired in may of 2019 and was out of luck, he also said that 15 year warranty extension were mailed out in the past but ,trouble is my wife and i do not recall seeing this information do to this i was unable to get my frame fixed under the warranty and i cannot afford out of pocket fee to fix myself. What issue i do have is i had my vehicle at a toyota dealership being worked on for a "safety recall " july of 2018 and i was wondering at least as a customer courtesy why i wasn't made aware of this frame recall while under repair for the safety recall, i would have got the work done had i known and as stated earlier known by receiving information in the mail about this. The toyota rep said since it expired i was out of luck and that is why i'm reaching out to you about this matter.
Called toyota after pa state inspection was told that the frame was rusting out. Got the run around from toyota stating that there was a preventative coating recall that my fianc didn't have performed.when i called toyota they didn't have her information and she owned the truck four years prior to the call. After they blew me off. She got her first recall notice for the spare tire, took it to toyota on 1/13/15. They can nt perform the recall saying the frame is rotting to bad and the truck is unsafe. Look at the post on line look at edmunds look on google this is a huge safety and consumer protection issue why wont the government step in and address this or do people need to die first.
I own a 2004 toyota tacoma and have regularly serviced and maintained my truck, which has always been stored in my garage. On november 6th, i went to have my yearly vehicle inspection and was told that the truck failed because of rust in the frame near the gas tank. John, the garage owner, told me about the toyota recall for the frames, and said he believed my truck was included in the recall. I then called the toyota dealership where i bought my truck, woburn foreign motors in woburn, ma, and they were unsure about the recall procedure because they thought the recall had expired. The service manager gave me the vin number and confirmed that the truck was on the recall list. She gave me the phone number to call toyota corporate. When i spoke with them, they told me that the recall had expired in 2011, and they assigned a case manager, [xxx], who would be the only one that could over-rule the expired recall. He called me a day later, and said toyota would not take care of it because they had sent me a letter notifying me that i was to take it in so they could do undercoating. I told [xxx] i never received the notice in the mail. Since my profession was pharmacy, i am very detail-oriented, knowing the importance of recording when we dispense prescriptions to customers. I believe that toyota is at fault for this problem, and they should stand by their product and resolve it. I recently received another recall notice on november 14th, 2013, for a spare tire mount under the truck that may rust and make the tire fall. Toyota asked me to bring in the truck for repair to resolve that issue, but not the frame. Without a replacement frame, i am unable to drive the truck because it is dangerous and cannot pass inspection. Having always maintained my vehicle, the truck engine and cabin are in excellent condition. I would appreciate any help you could provide. Thank you. 2004 toyota tacoma, took truck in to be painted was informed that there are multiple baseball size holes in the frame and the leaf spring mounts are rusted and leaf springs are about to pop off.i have called toyota corp, and was told because truck was not sprayed they will not honor the frame.i recently acquired this vehicle and was not aware of the recall that had been issued on this truck.toyota at this point is refusing to replace or repair the frame even though this truck originated and remained in a cold climate state for most of its existence. Please advise if there are any options available to have toyota honor this vehicle. Thank yo u
'04 toyota tacoma. Frame recall did not apply, but was inspected for issue in 2010 and given a clean bill. Hear a rattle under my truck and have a look. Shock mount broken, frame rusted through and nearly cracked in half. Undriveable-safely. If the frame was good, and was inspected 7 years ago, the frame was obviously not good. More importantly, the inspection (in this case) was insufficient to determine an adequate service life on the frame. The inspections should be performed again and the procedure modified to reflect the goal of the inspection, which this inspection did not.
My toyota tacoma frame broke due to rust.the leaf spring mounting bracket broke loose from the frame and he frame itself broke due to severe rust. The truck is now inoperable.there as a recall on some toyota frames, but apparently the recall only applies to "cold" states, not hawaii.many of my friends have tacomas and they all have rust issues.i also have a 2010 tacoma with less than 6000 miles and i have already noticed that the frame is rusting by theleaf spring mounts.

Frame rotting from inside out. Toyota knew about problem but didn't send notices ofcorrosion resist spray to all affected parties. Should have been a formal recall since the test is to hit with a ballpeen hammer to find the rust that can't be seen with naked eye.
9/8/2017, while working on my 2004 tacoma i found a 3 inch and a 1 inch rust holes in the frame near the left rear wheel. Near the right wheel i found a 1 inch hole. All it took was a tap with a hammer. How safe is that?

About two weeks ago ive taken my truck to price toyota in new castle de for a frame inspection. They told me that they were going to call the toyota manufacture about the frame recall issue but they never got back to me and just recently ive heard a knocking sound on the rear driver side and found a crack in the frame.

Bought vehicle, did a more thorough inspection and found frame rot, (rust holes in frame) which has basically rendered the truck unsafe to drive!!!!was told by toyota dealer that recall was over for replacing the frame and now i have a truck that i will not let my son drive. I also understand this is a problem with toyota, the frame rust
The dealer discovered holes in the frame on 3/26/19. Actually it was in for repair of a gas tank strap and i believe they used a hammer on the frame to make the holes. They wrote it up as my truck was unsafe to drive. It only has 81,000 miles on it and other wise in great shape. I had it in for a recalled rusted spare tire holder on 2/11/15 and the service manager told me that the frame looked ok and if the frame develops holes they can recommend a good welder.
Gas tank, tank sheid bracket holding tank up almost completly rusted off with hardly holding gas tank on! major issue!
Tacoma purchased feb.2019 with some rust found on frame.truck sent to body shop apr. 2020 to address rust.truck had become unrepairable due to "severe rust in multiple locations on frame","rust holes and cracking bad on driver side frame near fuel tank" and "frame is rusting bad from inside out"(quotes from mechanic). Truck will not pass inspection.
The frame is rotting, the cross bar is rotting, there are holes throughout, and there are areas where you can literally push your finger through! i discover the issues with the frame back in 2014. The local toyota dealer told me that there is nothing that they can do about it. The frame can be probably compared with something that sat under the salt water for a long time.
I got a letter from toyota motors stating that certain model years of tacomas had rust damage to the frame and i was informed to bring it to the dealership where they would perform a rust test on it. Mine is a 2004. They said the rest wasn't bad enough to replace the truck,of course and kept it to spray on a rust preventative on the frame. Within one year the coating they applied began to fall off peel off and obviously didn't work like planned. My sister had a 98 tacoma with the same issue and you could put your finger through the frame. They bought her truck back at the corporate office at 150% of bluebook value. That's what should happen now also. I've paid 20k$ for the vehicle brand new and a major reason was everyone likes the tacoma and its fairly easy or lets say was easy to resale before all the problems they are having. Now i've gotten another letter saying there is more than one recall and now have problems with the spare tire holder plate possibly rusting and falling off. Its pretty obvious to me and all the customers who have had the problems, that toyota must be forced into actually replacing the vehicle or pay the 150% book value without argument. Is anyone going to make this right?i have had 2 mechanics tell me the truck is unsafe and not road worthy. Luckily i have a company vehicle otherwise i would be very challenged.the bumper all the way to the front is totally rusted out and i don't wanna hear lip service saying its due to salt or something i just want a billion dollar company to be responsible for their product. I haven't driven the truck but 10 times since getting the coating applied and the sad thing is i love the truck and cant drive it. Please help us.

Very rusted frame
I was driving down the road and noticed some unusual rattling. I stopped and upon inspection found that the frame on both sides had cracked all the way through directly above the rear tires. This rendered the vehicle extremely unsafe to drive. I had it towed to a repair shop and they told me that a complete frame replacement needs to be done and that the vehicle is unsafe to drive as is. They said the frame is completely rusted out. I understand the vehicle came out of new york and has high salt concentrations but the rest of the truck is virtually rust free. I can?t believe that a frame rusting completely out is normal in just 10 years. I have contacted toyota (case number 1409290440) and they are telling me that any recalls pertaining to this have expired.i can?t believe they will not step up and fix what is obviously shoddy craftsmanship. My main concern is this could have caused a serious accident. They stepped up to the plate with the 1995-2000?s that had the exact same issue and obviously was not fixed in the 2001-2004 models. I am very disappointed with toyota and very concerned for the safely of other tacoma owners as this seems to be a pretty common issue with these trucks.

Excessive rust. Recall twice.
Tamara recall, my 2004 toyota tacoma 4 wheel drive chassis has broken on me twice sense i bought the truck from a used dealership, and the chassis is also cracked again on my back drivers side, when i bought the truck i wasn't told that the chassis was rusted and they had covered it up. I need to know if it's still under warranty to get it replaced or what i need to do, my odometer is showing only 118686 on it right now. I'm concerned if i were to be in a wreck that there would be a worse outcome verses the chassis not being rusted. When the chassis broke on the passenger side both times i was driving, the exhaust has broken off as well because of rust. Now the truck squeaks really bad and my spare tire is about to break off as well i believe. I would really appreciate it if i could get it fixed. I'm not sure how much of the chassis is rusted or how bad it us due to them covering it up. Both times the chassis has broken have been when on a city street i haven't done an insurance claim on it either, the second time it broke i was also braking the truck. I don't know the number of the recall. I bought the truck in march and all this happened in may and june and i'm afraid it's gonna happen again if it's not replaced and due to me making payments on it and it being my daily driver i don't know what else to due sense i cannot sale it. I didn't know about the recall until september, i seen something about it on facebook and just started looking into it to see if there was any possibility of getting it fixed or replaced. The bed has also been replaced before i bought it, but i'm not sure why. Thank you for reading this and i hope to hear something soon about my truck. Any kind of options available would be very helpful, because i do not trust this truck. It is very unsafe. I would not recommend anyone else to drive my truck because it is so untrustworthy.thank you again.
Through no fault of our own, the frame on our toyota truck has been discovered by our mechanic as rusted or corroded to an extend of unsafe driving conditions.toyota in response to my complaint replaced the spare tire carrieras a safety recall that never expires, however, they are telling me the frame is no longer under a warranty and is not a safety recall issue. The suggested i lodge a complaint with the nhtsa as they are unable and unwilling to do something for us.i uploaded 5 pictures, not sure if they are all there
December 26, 2013- going east on warner rd.
Frame has badly corroded. Toyota has recognized the defect in these vehicles and received compensation from their frame supplier, and has extended warranty to 15 yrs unlimited miles. Previous owner brought vehicle to white river junction toyota (vt), and they inspected it and made record of rotting, but did not see need to treat it or replace it per toyota's own program guidelines. Now frame has completely rotted through and toyota is saying it is too late to be replaced under the program.... Even though it is still well within the 15 yr warranty period. They are refusing to honor their warranty. I don't know if the vehicle is safe to drive. Internet is replete with thousands of similar complaints.

I don't know if i am in the right dept. But please guide me to the correct dept.my 2004 tacoma truck had a recall on the frame of vehicle. It is rusting or corroding away.recall notice was never received by me as i have had financial problems and moved 3 times. I asked toyota if they sent notice registered and their answer is no. Recently i have put my truck for sale and anyone that looked at it loved it but asked about the frame recall. I was dumbfounded as this vehicle was garage kept, no body rust, and has 47,000 orig. Miles. I am the original owner. I have spoken to toyota dealers, toyota customer reps. And all say nothing can be done at this stage of vehicle. How do i now knowingly sell this truck to anyone? what if the new buyer is killed in this vehicle because of a frame collapse while driving. Will toyota be responsible for the death? i have found a dealer that is replacing these frames. Why not mine?
I own a 2004 toyota tacoma 4wd. I purchase it new. The frame is rotting out terribly and the muffler system has to be replaced due to excessive corrosion and rot flaking off of the muffler system. I am afraid to drive the tacoma on the highway due to safety issues. I live in massachusetts and i have been advised that toyota may recall this year and model for frame rot. I am facing a $500+ bill to replace the muffler system. Please advise.

Vehicle frame is rusting, rotting, and crumbling from beneath the truck. I was unaware of the condition when i was told by a mechanic during a pennsylvania state vehicle inspection that the frame will eventually fail and split apart as i am driving down the road. I contacted toyota and they told me that i missed the recall window which would have extended the warranty on the frame. When i explained to them that i was not contacted about such an important recall, and if i were i would have to be an idiot not to act on it, they replied that their records show that a letter was sent to me therefore toyota will not honor the recall and replace my crumbling frame.
I took my truck in for the yearly inspection and it failed for a hole in the frame. I contacted toyota and was informed that i missed a customer care service to inspect the frame and there was nothing that they would do for me. I repaired the hole and the vehicles passed inspection for the frame the past two years.i was driving today and found that the bed of my truck crooked. I checked the other side of the frame to find that it is completely rotted and the truck is now unsafe to drive. Will this frame rust issue ever become a recall? its a shame that a perfectly good running truck is now garbage.

I just traded my harley davidson e-glide for a 2004 toyota tacoma. Unfortunately i didn't know about the frame issues! the frame and everything is rusted beyond repair. I called my local toyota dealer and they said that the recall for the frame issues was over. In my opinion toyota should honor the recall as long as their product is out to the public! i love the truck but just don't want to drive because of the safety issues of how bad the frame and all components are! i would appreciate all the help i can get.
3 years ago toyota sent us a noticed and called .. Asking us to have our frame inspected due to frame failures and rust. We complied and had the undercoating andframe inspected for 3 years with the understanding that this would protect us if future frame problems were identified.this year 2012 we were told we didn't need to have the frame inspected, however when we were replacing the brakes we noticed significant rust on the frame of the vehicle. We immediately calledour dealer for a frame inspection and was told the frame had failed and that we shouldn't drive the vehicle. For safety reasons. I called the toyota hotline and received a claim numberwas told we were eligible for the a frame replacement because we had received the undercoating . They set up an appointment for the toyota rep to inspect the vehicle today march 8th.. The rep never showed up.we weren't provided with a rental vehicle and thus having trouble meeting our work commitments.. And they expect us to put our children back in a vehicle which we were told is unsafe to drive, i am very concerned about how many other toyota drivers are driving unsafe vehicles.
I purchase my toyota tacoma used in jan. 2013. I noticed last month that the frame was getting holes in it. The information i looked up said that toyota did a recall on this particular truck. I was told by toyota that it is now too late to get it taken care of. I was not aware of the recall or an arbitrary ending date. Can you help me get toyota to take care of this problem. The truck is now worth nothing with the frame as it is. [xxx]. Thank you for your assistance in this matter. The toyota tacoma trucks had a customer service advisory for the frame rusting on the vehicle.the csa advised the current owner that the frame could rust and needed to be inspected.if the vehicle was inspected toyota would either spray the frame or replace it if rusted.i purchased this vehicle from an authorized toyota dealer i was assured the frame had been checked and taken care of.a week later i had to install a blown out muffler and come to find out the frame was not looked at and the fix was not completed.being the new owner of the truck i was told that the csa had expired december 2011 and there is nothing that can be done.i was hoping toyota would have a program in place for people that purchase a vehicle like i did that did not have the frame fixed.they do not.therefore i now own a truck that is unsafe to drive.toyota needs to make this a recall instead of a csa.
Frame rusted completelyunsafe to drivenever rec'd any notice of rust problem.
Excessive rust. Recall twice.
2004 toyota tacoma.consumer writes in regards to vehicle frame rust recall notice.the dealer informed the consumer, the frame needed to be replaced. However, the recall had ended and there was nothing they could do.
I was at shell station getting a oil change, when they went to lift my truck on their lift the technician noticed frame corrosion in 2 places. The technician told me if i do not fix it the spring leaf could fall off. Further more it is a safety issue. I do not the money for a new vehicle. Just because i did not get a notice does not meanthey should includea certain batch of trucks it should be all toyota's regardless. I called the dealership and they said forget about it if i did not a letter. I should not have to die just to get this fixed.
I was driving along and hit a pothole. The truck made a very loud metallic crunching sound under the cab behind me. After that, when i hit a bump, a similar loud metallic crunching sound occurs. I went to my mechanic, and he said that a body-frame mount had rusted through, and that there was also excessive rust in many other places. I had earlier replaced a shield over the gas tank that had completely rusted away and was banging against the drive shaft. I checked with toyota on my mechanic's advice, and there was a safety recall on my truck for exactly this problem (excessive frame rust), but it had expired in december of 1012. My mechanic says that my truck may be unsafe to drive. I bought the truck in july, 2012 from a subaru dealer, ruge's in rhinebeck, ny. I was not told about the rust condition, or about a recall. I never received any communication from toyota about this. I would like to know what if any options i have here.
The frame is so rotted it wont pass state inspection, this truck was recalled for this problem a few years ago, i took it to the dealer for inspection at that time and they said it was fine, now like two years later its totally rotten, i contacted toyota head quarters and filed a case # 1411101661 and they basically told sorry its to late recall is over, i told them it was at the dealer for this recall and they did nothing but look at it, can you help and there are 1000s of these rotten trucks on the road today a major safety issue thanks[xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The frame on the truck is rusted through.i have opened 2 complaint cases and toyota will not repair or replace.
2004 toyota tacoma with 147,000 miles failed state inspection and deemed unsafe to drive due to rusted and perforated frame.this frame was one bought by toyota from the dana corporation.toyota won a lawsuit over this poor quality frame, and has bought back all '95-'99 toyotas with this frame, and replaced frames on '00-'04 trucks.toyota is stating that our tacoma does not qualify for the extended warranty put out on these affected frames, as it was not undercoated as part of their prevention program.however, it has been documented that the undercoating was ineffective, and the frames continued to rust out and needed to be replaced.we feel strongly that toyota should offer the extended warranty to all trucks affected by this faulty constructed frame.toyota is reporting that they can do nothing further to help in this case, despite that it is an otherwise well equipped and strongly running truck, which has had ongoing and consistent routine maintenance. They are now indicating that a '04 tacoma with 147,000 is only valued at $500.
Nhtsa:action # 10027968 service bulletin #251424 report date nov.25,2008 - nhtsa # 10030357 [lsc]90d 2001-2004 tacoma frame corrosion - preventative compound] i purchased a 04 tacoma from prestige toyota, kingston,ny on 10/27/10.i asked the service manager about lsc 90d he stated that they did the inspection, but not the compound on 10/16/10.what the lsc 90d states is the frame is to be inspected and one of the following op. Codes 8630jm or 8630jn corrosion-preventative compound applied. This would extend the warranty on the frame for 15 years. Thisvehicle was inspected 1/3/13 . It failed state inspection,i'm furious. When i contacted dealer and toyota "they stated they could not do anything". That the program ended 12/31/12. Listed in lsc 90d states that" toyota has received reports that a small number 146,228 of 2001-2004 tacoma's operated in severe cold climate areas. 20 states listed with high road salt use exhibited excessive rust corrosion to the frame, causing perforation of the metal". Well if your frame is perforated . Wouldn't this be a major safety issue!!!! i never received any of the cover letters. I had the vehicle in for service on 8/30/11 @ prestige toyota again why wasn't the inspection done and corrosion-resistant compound applied. When lsc 90d was passed on 4/1/2011. My family and i where subjected to frame failure which could have resulted in death. I used to use this truck for business, now what do i use it for scrap metal? how do i service my customers and pickup material with out this truck.which i"m paying for until 11/14. Please report to consumer affairs also and bbb. I believe the frame on your vehicle is the major structure of your vehicle which every thing is attached to. This vehicle was bought new in glens falls,ny. So it has always been in ny one of the 20 states listed on lsc 90d service bulletin. Toyota received 25 million from dana corp.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for an unrelated repair when they noticed that the entire frame was completely rusted and caused the fuel tank to become slightly detached from the vehicle. The mechanic strapped the fuel tank back onto the vehicle as a temporary remedy. There was a voluntary recall issued by the manufacturer related to the frame, however the recall had expired. There was also a recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 12v542000 (tires) but the dealer refused to honor the recall because the vehicle was not previously repaired under the manufacturer's voluntary recall. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 104,000. The consumer stated she was never notified of the recall, involving frame rust.updated 01/08/14invoice received 01/28/14
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While the vehicle was being serviced by an independent mechanic, the mechanic informed the contact that the chassis frame was corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken to ira toyota of danvers (99 andover st, danvers, ma 01923, (978) 739-8300) where an anti-corrosion spray was applied to the frame. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact received a recall notification for nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires). The contact stated that the frame where the spare tire was located was corroded. As a result, the dealer declined the recall repair due to the frame being rusted. The dealer stated that the frame needed to be repaired prior to the recall remedy. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.updated 11/14/14 updated 4/29/2015
I purchased my 2004 tacoma as the second owner. The vehicle had the frame replaced. Upon my initial inspection prior to the purchase, everything underneath looked fine aside from what i considered normal rust on other parts such as the skid plates. Today while driving down the road, the gas tank fell out of the bottom, ran into and drive-shaft, and came 3 inches from scraping across the pavement. A line split on the top of my tank, leaking gas all over. I've contacted toyota, and they set me up with a case number, informing me that someone will be in touch tomorrow to discuss further.
While driving 45 mphpassenger's side under body caught on fire. No injuries reported.as a result, the vehiclewas considereda total loss.
Yesterday, i went to my mechanic for an inspection on my 2004 toyota tacoma.he said it wouldn't pass because holes were everywhere along the frame. I took it to toyota. They took pictures and documented the fact that my car was unsafe to drive. They said it wasn't their problem, and that i had been given four years to fix it. When i looked up my vin number online, it mentioned only the recall for the spare tire (which i had already taken off three years ago). I called toyota central, and they said it wasn't their problem. Apparently, i had received a first class letter between november of 2010 and december of 2011 which stated that i needed to have my frame sprayed. They said that the cutoff for this "remedy" was december, 2012. When i asked if, had i had the frame sprayed six months ago, would this rot have miraculously not appeared, they said they didn't know. They apologized for the fact that it was not their problem, and that was that.i may have received a letter...i am not sure, and cannot honestly claim i didn't receive it. What i do know that i do, though, is regularly check on line for recalls so that i can make sure that i am not missing anything. The dealer told me that this particular recall was voluntary, and therefore it wouldn't have been posted in normal channels.to make matters worse, the dealer specifically said that someone had come in the previous week with the same issue and it was "too bad". He also said that toyota would probably be doing something about this because so many people were having such major safety issues. He said that if i wanted to hold on to the truck...maybe something would happen in a year. What am i going to do with a truck i can't drive because it won't pass inspection and has been deemed unsafe?
I brought my 2004 toyota tacoma in to toyota of nashua new hampshire for concerns about my frame. They told methe frame is so badly rotted it is not safe to drive. They told me they could not do anything under warranty due to the fact that i did not have the frame undercoated by toyota. The frame undercoating recall ended 10/11. I was not aware of this recall. I have contacted toyota corporate in torrance california. I was told they could not help me and any further escalation of the matter would need to be "outside" of toyota. The truck is nine years old with 75k miles on it with a value of about 8,000 with a good frame. It is worthless in the current condition and cannot be driven. Thank you[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The frame is rusted through.i called toyota they said they sent a recall.i told them i didn't receive one.they said it was not there fault.it was the post office fault.i can't have any work done on the truck because of the rust.i don't have a lot of money i expected this truck to last a while.they knew they were making substandard frames.by just looking at my frame.
According to records, [xxx], toyota extended the corrosion-resistant treatment (crt) beyond 2010.the document reads additional 15 years. Currently i visited a toyato dealer and they claimed toyota ended the aggreement dec. 2012. No notice was recieved of change.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Heavy snows in colorado during december,2006 forced many vehicle drivers to drive in unusually heavy drifts. The rear skid plate on newer toyota tacoma 4x4 trucks can bend andpeel away from the frame when the vehicle is driven in deep drifts in reverse. When the vehicle is then driven forward, the bent skid plate acts as a baffle against snow, causing the truck to swerve and become difficult to maneuver and control. The skid plate is poorly designed for deep snow driving. It is held onto the frame by two small bolts in the front and by nothing in the rear.the owner of the vehicle removed the bent skid plate and has informed toyota. The part is available.
A tech was performing an oil change and discovered that the frame on my truck has rusted through at the point that the rear leaf spring attaches on the drives side. I am being told the vehicle is unsafe to drive. I contacted toyota and they tell me that they will not provide a resolution to the problem.
When changing the oil in the vehicle for the first time, it was up on a lift and it was obvious that the truck frame was rusting through.the bad part is when the vehicle was purchased last year toyota charged us a $200 for checking the vehicle out, but even though there are tons of complaints didn't bother to tell us that the frame was rusted.i haven't reported it to them yet i wonder if they will stand behind their inspection.so much for getting a vehicle checked out before you buy.
I recently purchased this 2004 toyota tacoma and took it in for an inspection of the frame for undercoating. The body shop noted severe corrosion of the frame with suspension parts that are also full of corrosion. I was told this vehicle was not safe to drive due to this rust issue.i was told if this vehicle was involved in an accident there would be serious injury or death because of this rust/corrosion. I need the manufacturer to take care of this for some reason this vehicle's frame was not recalled but the body shop stated this should have had a safety recall on this frame due to the amount of rust that is noted under the vehicle on the frame and suspension parts.
Frame is rusty beyond usage.as i accelerate the bed of the truck flexes so i can see it in the rearview mirror
Frame rusted completelyunsafe to drivenever rec'd any notice of rust problem.
September 29, 2018 i was driving on the interstate my tacoma's front end would feel like it would float off the ground or lift up off the interstate.i made it back to the town i live in and stopped at a gas station for some gas.as i left, to go pick up my fianc and our 2 girls to get back on the interstate and drive back with them to where i just was. I got about 3 blocks from the gas station as i was going 30 mph. All of a sudden my right front end goes down as if a tire blew.when i came to a stop and went to look what happen. I found that i don't have a flat tire but that my right front tire is lying on its side under the rear of the right front fender. The upper and lower ball joint each snapped in half which caused my tire to break loose and caused me to skid down the road. The right front axle shaft, outer tie rod, stabilizer bar links, spindle knuckle were all destroyed and had to be replaced.so when i was on the interstate heading home to get my family and kept feeling like the front of my truck would randomly float up was more than likely because my lower ball joint was already broken apart.which driving on the interstate put enough stress on the upper ball joint. That caused the upper ball joint to break when it did.to think if it the tire stayed on till i picked up my family and got back on the interstate with my 3 girls and that tire broke off.
There is frame rot on the vehicle weakening the frame and suspension components. The worst area of rot is on the drivers side of the vehicle where the rear leaf spring attaches to the frame. This area also has the gas tank and fuel lines and rear braking lines. I was never notified of a recall. Upon discovery of this hazard i notified the dealer and was told my vehicles recall had ended. I also notified toyota corporate and was told there is nothing they can do. Toyota tacomas have had frame rot issues with recalls that have affected the rear brakes fuel lines and tank.i feel it is unfair of toyota to admit an ongoing problem and replace frames on trucks with this issue, yet deny me because i was not made aware of it. Having a window of time on a recall that is a huge issue is not fair.now i have an unsafe vehicle, that i am afraid to put my children in, and no where to turn.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the suspension spring hangers were severely corroded. The contact stated that the subframe was also corroded. The manufacturer offered a warranty which was exceeded. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to koons tyson toyota located at (8610 leesburg pike, vienna, va 22182 (703) 790-5920) twice by the previous owner and rust inhibitor was applied to the subframe of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that the warranty period was exceeded. No additional assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 122,000.
Takata recall frame is rusted
The frame of the tacoma is severely rusted. Rust easily falls off the frame of the truck. Tacoma models after 2005 received recall notifications and fixes from toyota, but the 2004 models have not received any notice even though they exhibit more frame rot and rusting.
Purchased 04 tacoma double cab 4x4 onlynto later find frame rot by the shocks and wheels. I didn't see this initially upon inspection. I thought there was only surface rust until i had the truck on a lift for inspection and was advised of perforations. Needless to say it won't pass inspection. Did some research and found that toyota's class action settlement only included 05-10 tacoma's. Also found that there may have been a warranty extension but according to the dealer, that expired. Toyota won't do anything for me so now it's up to me to repair the frame, if it's even repairable.how could toyota put out a product and not stand by it, or at least cover the frame replacement? toyota really needs to cover all vehicles with this problem regardless of age of vehicle and this should never expire. I understand that the cost of a new frame is about $5000, and with labor, runs up to about $15k. Toyota needs another class action suit filed against them asap!!!
Upon a normal service incident i was informed that the frame on the driver side shows a corrosion problem that has eaten half way thru the frame making the truckunsafe due to the corrosion problemafter many attempts to contact toyota their response was sorrynothing we can do for you.they also told me that a recall was issued and expired in 2010 which i was not informed about.it is a response that does not satisfy meor maybe other owners of this type of vehicle and it was there product that they producedand now do not want to be held responsible for.est repair cost to correct the problem = 14000.00 not acceptable.
When driving home from having the truck serviced, the front drivers wheel broke and crashed into a curb. After taking it to toyota and calling there help desk, theye confirmed it had a lower and upper ball joint failure. At this time toyota will not honor this recall and will not provide any assistance with the repairs.
Upon inspection from toyota ,from the dealer bert wolfe toyota in charleston, wv, the frame on my tacoma was failed.the result was perforations from rust.i had previously received a letter stating the there was a recall on my truck.the letter stated that it necessary to be inspected for frame corrosion, and that three possible outcomes would arise: 1) upon the passing of the corrosion test an anti-corrosion treatment would be applied and a replacement vehicle would be extended until the treatment was complete. 2) upon the failure of the test (meaning the frame had corrosion) the frame would be replaced, and a replacement vehicle would be rendered. 3) upon failure of the test toyota may repurchase my vehicle at a price of 150% of the kelly blue book value.none of these outcomes were instituted upon failure of my frame corrosion test.bert wolfe toyota failed the frame, stated they would replace the frame , but it would take six months.they placed me back in my truck which failed the test, without a temporary replacement.my complaint is that a) my truck will never be the equivalent, all of the parts that will be taken off and/or replaced and then reinstalled on the new frame, causes for safety concerns.there is a high probability that something will be overlooked in the process of reinstallation. B) that the parts that connect to the frame or located in it's vicinity will corrode eventually causing safety concerns. C) my vehicle failed a test in which the frame is considered unsafe, and i was sent off in that same vehicle without a provisional replacement.
Truck is unfit to drive due to rusted out frame. Please help with recall on toyota tacoma trucks.thanks,[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The lower ball-joint on the drivers front failed while driving (approx 20mph on a straight, smooth residential road (fortunately unloaded truck and at low speeds) sending the wheel sideways and slamming the suspension arm into the ground, where i skidded for about 40-50 feet.there is a recall in effect for this problem, year, make, model, mileage range, but only the 4 wheel drive models and 4 runners.it needs to be extended to the 2 wheel drive models as well.i had very little indication that something was wrong. It started feeling odd, like the alignment was off, andi was driving about a quarter of a mile to safely park it until it could be looked at, when it suddenly failed.
Lower ball joint broke on both driver side as well as the passenger side. Vibration/humming sound while driving at all speeds , had tires and frontend checked with no issues found. I spoke to toyota about this issue & they refuse to acknowledge that there is an issue & have mentioned that my vehicle is not under recall. Costs close to $980.00 to fix
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated was at a complete stop and when the brake was released, the contact heard a thumping sound and noticed that the driver side front tire was bent abnormally. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who inspected the vehicle and located the failure at the frontdriver side upper control arm, in which the bolt failed due to dirt and dust penetration. As a result, the bolt was separate from the frame. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 32,752.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection when they detected that the entire frame was severely corroded. The manufacturer was notified of the defect and the contact was informed that the vehicle was included in a manufacturer's recall however, the recall had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 118,223.
Ball joint separated and wheel tucked under car.also broke cv shaft
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 13 mph, the front driver's side wheel detached from the vehicle. The wheel detached due to a fracture at the ball joint. An authorized dealer had not been notified. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but failed to offer any assistance because the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 05v225000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). No repairs were performed. The failure and current mileages were 153,000.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the lower ball joints failed causing the passenger side front tire to detach from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the lower control arm had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 170,000.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 3 mph, the driver's side lower ball joint fractured. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the ball joint failed due to defective material, insufficient lubrication and the press fit of the ball join assembly was not correct.the contact replaced the lower ball joint assembly himself. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension: front: control arm: lower ball joint). The failure and current mileage was 116,000.
Took my 04 tacoma to get inspected at toyota the tech sais the vehicle is unsafe . The rust / rotted condition of the frame is excessive and beyond repair . Toyota does not want to take responsibility for this problem. They told me that they cant do anythingabout this .

On 3-7-05 took it to a toyota dealer to inspect vehicle and fix it.consumerrefused to deal with the other companiesbecause they were rude and intimidating.vehicle was not under a warrantybecause another company tightened the bolts and chargedconsumer$80.the toyota dealer replaced rear:axle:spindle.
I was driving at around 15-20 mph when the lower ball joint on my 2004 tacoma snapped, causing the upper ball joint to snap, pulling out the axle, and causing some other damage.toyota refuses to accept the claim, denying that my truck was affected by the recall (toyota recall 50j).i never received any notice from them, and the truck was in several toyota dealerships over the years.this could have killed me, and toyota is dismissive of everything.despite the evidence, they continue to deny that anything is wrong and refuse to pay for the parts and labor to fix their defect.
This is the case # that toyota has assigned to my situation: #[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed her that they could not assist. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. *pm

I never received any notice, i am the original owner.toyota says i am on my own for replacement.found issue at my brother's had to leave truck unsafe to drive.will add photos after i get back to vehicle.
Took truck in for inspection and the frame is deteriorating to the point the bed is becoming detached from the frame and separating from the cab. The suspension is coming loose from the mounts. This is not the only one the mechanic has seen with deterioration. These trucks are not safe to drive!!
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated while driving 35 -40 mph, the passenger's side ball joint failed causing damage to the sidewall of the tire. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the lower control lower ball joints, control arm, ball joint and the inner and outer tie rod needed to be replaced. Excessive rust. Recall twice.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that he initially noticed that the rear bumper was corroded. The contact bought a replacement bumper and took the part to an independent mechanic to have the bumper replaced. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the mechanic discovered severe corrosion around the front part of the leaf springs on the driver's and passenger's side of the vehicle. The contact spoke with mike erdman toyota (4650 fl-520, cocoa, fl 32926) where he was informed that the vehicle was out of warranty and any repairs would be performed out of pocket. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 136,000.
Right ball joint broke. Wheel tucked under vehicle.broke cv axle
Thank yo u
Feb 6,2010 as i was driving south on figueroa in highland park, the lower ball joint onright front tire completely broke causing my tire to fold under the truck. My vehicle is a 2004 tacoma toyota with101,560 miles.since i was going about 20 mph, since it was raining at the time, there were no injuries, however if the failure had occurred on the freeway at much higher speeds, the failure could have resulted in my losing control and leading to a very serious accident, resulting in serious injury or even death. I had my truck towed to nearest repair shop and had the lower ball joint replaced. I went to the dealer where i originally purchased my truck, and i was dismissed, with service manager saying it was out of warranty, and the failure could happen any time. I did have two more contacts with this dealer (bob smith toyota in la cresenta) but no help at all. I reported it to toyota customer assistance in torrance, ca. And was told that this was not covered by any recall and there was nothing they could do (i spoke with dawn and the reference # is 10021153 of my call). I did more research and found that there was a recall on my model and year of my truck for the exact failure that occurred. The nhtsa campaign id# is 05v225000 and covers toyota model tacoma from 2001 to 2004. The nhtsa action # is ea04024. The description of the recall is the "component front control arm lower ball joint". Neverthe less i was told twice that my truck was not covered by the recall. Since the recall is listed by nhtsa i don't understand why i was told my truck was not covered. I feel this is very dangerous defect that can result in serious accidents. Also, what other action can i take to have the other lower ball checked to be sure it is safe, or replaced if necessary. I am retired, and ineed to use this truck daily but feel very nervous when ever i drive it.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact was traveling 55 mph when the front passenger wheel came off.right before the wheel came off, the vehicle started pulling to the right. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic who stated that the vehicle experienced failure in the lower ball joint. The contact spoke with the manufacturer and was told that the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign 05v225000, suspension. The vehicle was notrepaired. The failure and current mileages were 385000.
This is a long shot in the dark but its worth a try. Toyota has a recall out for the 2004 toyota tacoma ball joint. The recall summary : on certain sport utility vehicles, due to manufacturing issue in the front suspension lower ball joint, there is a possibility that the surface of the ball joint may have been scratched. The ball joint may eventually experience excessive wear and looseness, resulting in increased steering effort.consequence: the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing loss of steering control and a crash could occur. Remedy: dealer will replace the front suspension lower ball joints free of charge. The recall began on july 5, 2005. I own a 2004 toyota tacoma and i was coming home from los angeles my steering felt kind of funny felt like i had a flat tire so i pulled off the road and checked the tires but everything seemed to be fine i continued driving i came into town and turned onto vista chino off of the hwy 111 in palm springs all of a sudden the whole front of my truck collapsed and went sliding down the road not being able to stop thank god it didn't do that on the freeway or even in town someone could of lost a life i had it towed to the shell station at the corner i called toyota and had it taken over to the dealer. I looked online to see if there were any recalls and sure enough there was. I called the recall number corporate toyota they asked for my vin# they said that my truck does not fall in under the recall. They had a tech fly out from the factory and said the same thing because my truck was manufactured on a different date.i have done some research and there a lot of consumers that are running into the same problem that i have been through with the vin#. I could of lost my life or taken someone else's in this collision. Its obvious it is the same problem in the recall, tires just don't break at the ball joint while your driving tires should stay intact to your vehicle.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact was driving 15 mph in a residential driveway when the ball joint fractured in half and the front passenger wheel completely fractured from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed then to a local repair facility where it was diagnosed that the ball joint was defective and would need replacing. The manufacturer was contacted but offered no assistance.the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 110,000.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While driving 45 mph,the contact heard an abnormal popping noise under the vehicle. The contact discovered that the lower ball joint failed and the wheel went under the vehicle. The contact noticed the frame skidding on the highway. The vehicle was towed away, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 228,000.

The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma.the contact felt that the steering was very tight.while driving 20 mph, the front driver's side tire fell off.the vehicle was taken to the auto shop and repaired.the mechanic stated that the lower ball joint failed.the dealer and manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 05v225000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint).the manufacturer took a report and informed the contact that he would be notified by a toyota representative.the current and failure mileages were 77,000.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While driving approximately 60 mph, the front driver side ball joint fractured. The contact lost the ability to steer and brake, and lost control of the vehicle. The contact was able to pull off the roadway and stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to sierra toyota (2596 e fry blvd, sierra vista, az 85635, (520) 458-8880) where it was diagnosed that the ball joint fractured and needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 158,000.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While driving 5 mph and making a right turn the contact heard a groaning noise in the front passenger side wheel. After the vehicle was taken to the dealer the contact was driving 65 mph when the front passenger side tire came off of the vehicle. The wheel assembly broke as well. There were no injuries reported. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. While traveling on the bruckner by-pass i executed a 90 degree turn to a side road. When i turned the truck came to a sudden stop. I inspected the truck and found both rear springs broken and the rear axle shifted to the right jamming the tire into the wheel well. The truck was empty and not used as a hauling vechiele. The manufacturer replaced the springs. The original springs were clearly defective and could of resulted in a major accident if they had failed on the main highway.

I was informed in december of 2012 of a recall on my 2004 tacoma where the spare tire holder could rust and fall off. As of 4/24/2013 i still haven't been notified of what toyota,s plan to fix this problem is. What can i do?
Frame rusted throughstationary
This vehicle has excessiveframe rot like other tacomas that were recalled.
Recall on frame and i brought it to deal where they said frame was not defected. One year later frame is corroded and rusted out. Call dealer and said it was my problem recall ended 6 months ago. How can they get away with this!!!
9/8/2017, while working on my 2004 tacoma i found a 3 inch and a 1 inch rust holes in the frame near the left rear wheel. Near the right wheel i found a 1 inch hole. All it took was a tap with a hammer. How safe is that?
2004 toyota tacoma. Consumer writes to share that he was in a serious accident and praises toyota for how this vehicle held up.*tgwthe consumer stated he was making a left turn, when another motorist ran a light and hit him on the passenger side. The impact caused his vehicle to flip in the air while doing a 180 degree turn. He then landed on the drivers side, then rolled back on all four tires. There was no damage to the roof of the vehicle .the consumer only had a small scratch where the seat belt held him in place.
Frame rot not covered by toyota
The frame of my truck has rusted from the inside out and is no longer stable to hold the truck together. When having tires put on the mechanic showed me the issue and stated that the truck is to dangerous to drive. Since then i have discovered that many owners are having this same problem and the company is unwilling to stand behind their product.
My 2004 toyota tacoma was "recalled for undercoatinhg" which was done 02/11. In 2017, on advice from my private, professional mechanic he informed me to contact toyota about corrosive rusting of frame. It was inspected by the dealership, i purchased it from. In 2018, it was inspected and, passed, again. 2 weeks ago, i found a crack in my frame, sligtly in front of left rear, tire well, by gas tank. I will be taking it to a dealership, for frame inspection tomorrow. I don't feel safe, driving it. I'm disabled and, i am the trucks 2nd owner. I purchased my 04 in, 2006. It is in great condition. Mileage, 122,500. Ironically, the tire hanger plate has been recalled and, replaced around 2014. In 2017 my protective plate, fell and, dropped the gas tank. It was, broken in 1/2. My mechanic secured it and, upon inspection it passed at a toyota dealership. I asked if it was possible to replace the protective plate and, i was told "no." i asked for an explanation and, wasn't given one. It was the same dealership that "undercoated," my truck. The dealership where i purchased my truck performed a 2+hr inspection on the frame in 2017. The dealership that "undercoated," my truck only had it in the repair area, for 15mins and, brought it back out, stating they "hammer-tested" it and, it was in great shape? i'm worried sick over my outcome, tomorrow. I'm in no financial postion to replace my truck. A truck i was told would last up to 300,000'miles. I did complain to toyota headquarters in 2018, was given a claim number i called them when i found the crack, in the left-side, rear of my frame, this, past friday. I had been hearing a "rattle," from beneath my truck, the last few times, i had driven it. I barely had to bend over, to see the crack in my frame! this is a horrificly, dangerous condition. (it was parked and, not running, when i found the crack, in the frame.
This is a story about the purchase of a brand new toyota tacoma in 2004that i paid cash for. On or about january of 2012 i called toyota to find out ifthere were any recalls on the vehiclejust checking.i was told there was a recall for a frame rustingwhen we brought the vehicle in for another service matter we were told that there was no problem with the frame (there was no record of our having been in the dealership for the recalljust the service that was performed).we never received official notice of the recall but now we have a frame rusting issue with some areas that are rotting through the frame!when i contacted toyota headquarters i was informed that the recall had expired seven days prior and they cannot do anything for me! how can this be?if there was a recall on the product and the vehicle is showing the defect from the recall how can it expire? toyota has recommended we retain a lawyer for this issue.are you kidding me?i have a truck worth next to nothing that i depend on for my living and they tell me to get a lawyer?frankly, i am very surprised at toyotaa company with an excellent reputation, that i thought makes good cars and trucks not stand behind their defective merchandise. I will never ever buy another vehicle from toyota and to me their reputation is now tarnished.
I bought my 2004 tacoma from a used car dealer in may of 2014 and was unaware of an earlier recall for possible excessive frame corrosion.my current servicing toyota dealer said the recall had expired and couldn't help me, but referred me to toyota, who also offered no help.i feel this is a safety issue, since if the frame fails it would be extremely hazardous to myself and other motorists on the road.
My 2004 toyota tacoma frames is rusted and cracked. I will not pass inspection stick in ma this year. 2005 -2009 tacoma vehicle are having the frame replaced by the dealership at toyota's expense.why the cut off with one year in difference. I would like some help to get this frame replaced like other toyota owners/
The entire frame has rusted from front to rear. Gas and brake lines have also rusted out along with many other parts. Can not find where to find a recall notice.
2004 toyota tacoma frame rusted through, hole you can put hand through. Toyota never issued recall, claims corrosion campaign was over. I never received any notice, i am the original owner.toyota says i am on my own for replacement.found issue at my brother's had to leave truck unsafe to drive.will add photos after i get back to vehicle.
Vehicle was at dealer for recall "excessive corrosion of the spare tire carrier lift plate" service tech. Noted "frame has a hole, would not pass nysi".in researching the issue toyota admitted that the frame, manufactured by [xxx] did not receive proper corrosion protection.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Had frame replaced due to recall in 2014 and now the frame is cracked again. Local toyota will not replace claimed warranty is 15 years from first ownership.
I founda hole in the frame and was advised as to not drive vehicle. I learned that a recall had expired only 6 months ago and was not going to be repaired from toyota. $12000 was estimateand i complained that i was never contacted. I am the second owner but had maintained vehicle to keep for many years.i am on soc security and this has been a hardship on me. I hope there is a way of compensating me or helping me as the dealer offered half of blue book for a trade in. Thank you
Just got my truck back from the mechanic today, 6/7/2017, for the annual state inspection and he indicated the frame is not looking good and safety will be a concern soon. The truck was undercoated on the recall, applied directly over the existing rusted frame back then. I called the toyota dealer who did the undercoating and the service manager told me toyota has no further obligations since the vehicle was undercoated. This was not an ample resolution to an ongoing defect.i was also told at the time, i had no choice or say in the matter.i'm having concerns now for my safety and toyota should resolve this responsibly. I'm the original purchaser of the vehicle, it has been well maintained with about 101,000 current miles on the odometer.
Remote key unlock is inop.i've ordered a new remote - 2 in fact- neither will program.vendor is saying that there must be something inoperative internally in the tacoma electronics.the lock works; however the unlock will not work. Vehicle was stationary, parked in both occassions testing the new remote.
Vehicle has 113,000 miles on it but is undriveable because frame is rusted through.
My frame is rusting out where rear springs connect to the frame. Truck is non inspectable for maine. There was a recall at some point and i never got recall paperwork.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph the vehicle lost the ability to accelerate. The failure had recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for a diagnosis, but they stated that they could not recreate the failure. The vehicle was taken to another dealer, who informed the contact that they knew it was a throttle body failure but they were unable to get the failure codes to appear on their computer to validate their suspicions. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 147,000.
When i was 16 years old my parents got my a new 2004 toyota tacoma, which was bought in september 2004.however, i did not get my license until december 21, 2004.i did not start driving right away.i started driving the truck in january.i only drove to school and back, which was about 7 miles away.on day after softball practice, which was held after school, on february 24 2005, i wrecked the toyota tacoma.i was not going very fast down the road, but all of the sudden the truck sped up and i felt like i did not have control over the truck.i ran off the road and over corrected twice.the whole time i was hitting the brake but nothing happened.after i overcorrected the second time, i hit a mail box and when about 65 feet off the road and hit a tree, the whole time trying to hit the brake with nothing happening.i was injured on the wreck and i never understood what had happened to make the truck to do.i was told it was probably just me being an inexperienced driver, but looking back now i do not think that was it.i had to go to the hospital, but the injuries were not life threatening.also, because of the accident, the brand new truck was totaled and my family and i got dropped from our insurance.after all these problems with the toyota and the gas pedal, i wanted to file a complaint to get this problem looked into so that it will not happen to someone else.i was lucky but the next person may not be as lucky.
I have a 2004 toyota tacoma 4x4 with a 3.4 liter v6. I have already filed 1 complaint butt in frustration will try this again. The electronic throttle bodies that come on 2003 and 2004 toyota tacomas are flawed and need to be investigated and recalled due to safety concerns. The problem is that the accelerator position sensors on these throttle bodies are going out, causing the accelerator to become useless unless depressed greater than 60%. I have all most been in 2 accidents while pulling out into traffic and having this occur. When the sensor fails the throttle valve closes leaving the person driving the vehicle without enough acceleration to get out of the way of on coming traffic. In vehicles with manual transmission it is especially dangerous when on an incline (very difficult not to role backwards and hit something behind you).also, no check engine light has came on when this has occurred. I have read hundreds of letters on the internet from people having the same problem. Is it going to take someone getting killed or a healthy law suit to make toyota take action?
Going 35 miles an hour the vehicle will start to pull to the side and the ball joint will come out also the abs sensor cable will brake and you will have to replace it a $2500 dollar spence for a toyota malfunction in the suspension i have a friend in california that has one a year early model than mine a 2003 toyota tacoma and he told me about this problem had happen to him in the freeway about 60 mphto him a had to learn the hard way if you have a toyota tacoma pleasei am warning you to have the ball joint replace before its to late the new ball joints are warranty for life but i will check in to that if i still have the pick up in four years
2004 toyota tacoma v6 3.4l 5vz-fe with automatic transmission.
While in reverse, idling slowly to a stop to pick up a hot water heater, the vehicle suddenly accelerated independently.the vehicle did not respond when the brake pedal was depressed.as a result the vehicle crashed into a plumbing supply warehouse, sending the vehicle through an overhead door and through expensive hot water heaters and spas.the vehicle continued into the warehouse until it hit an immovable object and stopped.the throttle continued to highly rev the engine and the vehicle was shifted into drive to get out of the warehouse.the vehicle crashed at high speed on the way out, and onto the street.brakes did not stop the vehicle.the vehicle was eventually shifted into neutral and the throttle resumed normal speed operation.next day, toyota dealer could not diagnose the throttle problem because, being a 2004, it did not throw computer failure codes.independent garage diagnosed the problem as a failed throttle position sensor.earlier in the same week, the throttle stuck open when backing up at low speed, but i didn't think anything about it or the seriousness of a failing throttle.the truck is now operating after repairs.
Tl- the contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. While driving approximately 5 mph the contact applied pressure to the brake pedal and the vehicle accelerated. The vehicle crashed into a metal pole and came to a stop. There was damage to the front end of the vehicle.there were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and a complaint was filed. The manufacturer stated they would have an inspector inspect the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 78,100. Ds
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while attempting to accelerate from a traffic stop, the accelerator pedal stopped responding and the vehicle would not accelerate. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle was not included in any recalls. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000 and the current mileage was 170,000.
The contact owned a 2004 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while engaging the brake pedal, the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated. The contact applied extreme pressure on the brake pedal in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle continued to accelerate until crashing into a brick building. The contact sustained major injuries to her head and neck. The vehicle was destroyed and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed and the failure was not diagnosed.the vin was not available. The failure and current mileages were 164,000.
2004 toyota tacoma v6 3.4l 5vz-fe with automatic transmission.toyota originally equipped this vehicle with a throttle by wire system.the vehicle unexpectedly does not respond to accelerator pedal position.toyota on board diagnostic system does not detect fault thus does not log any error codes or illuminate check engine light.occurrence rate and duration of events is intermittent and inconsistent.velocity of the vehicle rapidly decreases unexpectedly and momentarily as if foot was temporarily removed from the accelerator pedal.vehicle also unexpectedly and momentarily does not respond when accelerator pedal is depressed to begin moving or suddenly decreases speed when accelerating.this is a potential hazard in situations such as cruising in traffic, clearing an intersection, crossing railroad tracks, etc... Occurrence rate and duration of problem seems to be worsening over time or with increased ambient temperatures.
While driving the vehicle, the throttle suddenly stops responding for about 3-5 seconds, then returns. While it is unresponsive, it seems to return to a fully closed position as the vehicle starts slowing, then suddenly reopens to where the accelerator pedal is being depressed, and quickly starts accelerating. It doesn't seem to matter what type of road i am driving on or at what speed. It doesn't do it under hard acceleration, only normal driving. I suspect it is the throttle body itself that is causing the problem as investigating has told me that other people have had this same exact issue, all with a 2003 or 2004 toyota tacoma with a 3.4l v6. I have also discovered that these two years a newer drive by wire throttle body was used, and was changed to a different design in 2005 and newer tacomas.
Gas pedal stuck.
Vehicle suddenly loses engine power, usually when pulling into traffic, starting from a stoplight or attempting to pass on the freeway. In all cases resulting in dangerous situations. The dealer attempted to fix the issue once, acknowledging it was a common problem with the vehicles throttle body system. After $1000 worth of parts the problem is back, they refuse to warranty anything past the 3year/36mile period. In researching online this appears to be an extensive issue with similar tacomas. I've contacted the dealer about diagnosing the problem, they refuse to look at it citing the need for another $1000 worth of parts needed.
2004 toyota tacoma [xxx] electronic throttle control system (etcs).on 26 feb 2005, 14 apr 2005, 17 apr 2005 and 20 feb 2005 after prolonged driving at highway speeds when stepping off the gas pedal to make a stop the engine speed would not decrease and i would have to apply both feet to the brake pedal to try to slow down, and swerve to the side to avoid hitting vehicles in front of me.after approximately 5-10 seconds the engine speed would suddenly decrease and i could regain control.while struggling to keep control did notshift from drive to neutral. In each instance no warning lights.before these 4 events occurred the engine suffered a catastrophic failure on 11 apr 2004 with only 1,111 miles.toyota of carson city nevada effected the repairs to the catastrophic engine failure by replacing the lower block and the cylinder heads among other components.i took the car to toyota of carlsbad, california on 1 mar 2005, 20 apr 2005, 5 may 2005 and 23 feb 2006 for thespeed control problem but they could not duplicate it and would not replace any components.apparently the computer did not register/store any diagnostic failure codes.i know by having read the toyota service manual that the electronic control module does not record all failures. I cannot tell if this problem was present when the car was built or whether it was induced by repairs for the catastrophic engine failure.what i do know is that i have a serious safety issue.i am very concerned about not being able to avoid hitting a pedestrian or another vehicle.i have exhausted all consumer support avenues with toyota. Reference number [xxx] with eloise toyota customer support 1-800-331-4331 today 24 feb 2006 indicates that they will not do anything else.i strongly suspect that there are two failures.first, the throttle body is malfunctioning intermittently causing the problem.second, the ecm is failing to detect and record the event.
Dt*:the contact stated after releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle idled when the pedal was depressed again.the pedal must be released and depressed for the vehicle to respond.this occurred once every two weeks or several times a day.the dealership was unable to duplicate the problem.updated 10/4/2006 - while driving 65 mph the accelerator pedal with the accelerator pedal pressed the vehicle would decelerate.the vehicle would lose power without warning.
At a stop, vehicle does not accelerate after depressing the gas pedal.2 occasions nearly caused an accident.also, at cruising speeds (60-70 mph) vehicle will decelerate without any change in pressure to the gas pedal.
The contact has a 2004 toyota tacoma. The vehicle was pre-owned and purchased in april 2009. While driving between 25 and 35 mph, the vehicle began accelerating without placing pressure on the gas pedal. The failure has occurred on five occasions. The failure is related to the vehicle speed control. The failure mileage was 68,000 and the current mileage and most recent failure occurred at 74,000 miles.
With steady pressure on the gas pedal, the vehicle intermittently hiccups (as if foot was taken off the pedal) and vehicle changes speed and then surges back to accelerate.i believe it to be the throttle by wire throttle bodies which was placed in the tacoma model for 2003-2004 and then later revised in 2005-present.
Vehicle suddenly loses engine power.sometimes happens at cruising speed, sometimes happens with a slight depressing of the accelerator (when making turns, at risk of getting struck when making left turns). Dealers have tried to fix several times and usually cannot duplicate the intermittent problem (no check engine codes).abundance of reports online of similar problems.often reported as throttle body problems.how can a common problem be impossible for theoretically well trained dealer employees to diagnose?if it is a routine problem, why isn't there a recall, or at least a service bulletin?
While driving the engine speed dropped and the accelerator pedal stopped responding.after towing the truck home i read the scan codes and there were many that related to the throttle body sensors.in order to debug the system i cleared the problem.with the key on and the engine not running i tested the drive-by-wire system manually.it responded correctly and showed no problems.no more codes were thrown.i started the truck and put it in gear and engine went to full throttle immediately.i turned the truck off quickly and rechecked the drive by wire servo system.it still worked correctly with no codes thrown.i am an engineer and have worked a great deal with servo systems including writing a book on the how to troubleshoot these systems.i can't believe that the designers did not build any redundancy into the feedback and control devices.this device is considered a major risk in a failure mode analysis.if i did that type of work in my position i would be fired and have and unending list of lawsuits brought against me.this truck has been incredible in terms of reliability however i am very surprised that a company as large as toyota would leave something like this to chance.this device can easily fail in a way that would cause a life threatening situation.i was lucky to have it fail at low throttle and not full throttle as it did when i tested it at home.this is a definite safety issue and toyota needs to address it.i called toyota and they "couldn't help" me.it cost $1200 to repair.it's not the money, it's the risk that this failure imposes.the truck now belongs to my 16 year-old son and i'm concerned about his safety.i also have a video that shows the methods i used to test the system and the failure happening right in my driveway!...updated 05/15/12 * bf
While releasing the accelerator pedal a loud grinding noise was produce from the rear.dealer stated that was normal because it was a new part.
After shifting from second gear to third gear, the gas pedal stopped working completely.seconds later it functioned normally, and as if nothing had happened.this has happened before, and i have identified the problem as a failure of the throttle body motor/sensor.i will be asking the toyota dealership to fix the part.
The contact owns a 2004 toyota tacoma.while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would dramatically decelerate without warning.also, when applying pressure to the accelerator pedal, the vehicle would not accelerate unless the pedal was completely depressed to the floor.the dealer stated that the maff air sensor was causing the failure.the dealer cleaned the sensor.the contact returned to the dealer a week later and they stated that the catalytic converter was melted and was the cause of the failure.after careful inspection, it was determined that the converter was not melted.a professional mechanic stated that the supercharger heat output effected the accelerator pedal positioning sensor and was causing the failure.the failure mileage was 9,000 and current mileage was 17,000.*dsy

This is a safety concern on my 2004 toyota tacoma double cab v6, 4x4 truck. The exterior mirrors on both sides fog up so bad in cold weather they become virtually useless. Toyota does not offer a heated mirror option on the truck. At several times driving in inclement weather i've been forced to pull off the side of the road to try to clear the mirrors, to no avail.they would just fog up again, once i got underway. The condition is different then starting out after the truck has sat outside overnight in the cold.the mirrors might clear for a whilethen, while underway, fog up for no apparent reason.toyota says don't drive in that kind of weather.not a good remedy.the truck is brand new and toyota says i have no recourse, that it has met all of the safety standards required by the government.driving blind at night, to me,is not an option.i drive approximately 30,000 miles per year and have never driven an automobile with a mirror problem like this.it's a serious safety concern in my opinion and should be addressed by toyota.i registered my complaint with the company by phone and by email. I have received no response from my local dealer or toyota to any of my email complaints.
It's the tires i bought. They bfgoodrich p255 70r 16 rugged ta. I experienced problems with them from the time of purchase. Sam's club moved the bad tires from the front to the back. I thought the problem was resolved, until the tires were rotated at the scheduled interval. The problem was back. The tires are still under warranty, but i'm getting the runaround from bfgoodrich on replacement. The tires are causing vibrations above 50mph. My vehicle's steering and related components checked out ok,rims have switched, tires balanced more than 10 times, with the same vibrating results. The tires have been checked out as faulty by a facility bfgoodrich sent me to. I'm getting the runaround from bfgoodrich about actually getting them replaced still.
