Passenger side air bag vibration when motor is running. Returned to local dealership due to loud rattle in dash board.dealer inspected and reported that a majority of the clips holding the passenger side airbag in place were not there. Dealer ordered replacement clips and dashboard bolts and repair was made. In october 2003 rattle returned and a bolt appeared on the passenger floor board. Returned vehicle to dealership where inspection took place. Mechanic suggested that someone had hit the dashboard to loosen bolts, not the case, yet no attempt to repair or tighten equipment was made.

At approximately 128k miles, the air bag light illuminated and will not go out.the problem was first noticed while driving, but nothing happened to the vehicle that would have been an obvious cause.additionally, the vehicle has been continually garaged since i purchased it new in 2003.

Takata recall: airbag "warning" light on dashboard is on and has been since before i purchased the truck , according to the seller. Not sure if airbag would even operate (doubtful).also, the "check engine" light is on, scans keep saying it is an emissions problem. Vacuum canister, wiring, oxygen sensor were replaced and light went off temporarily, then stays on even though truck runs fine.date given below is date i purchased the truck, ongoing problems

"takata recall"my airbag light came on recently. I took vehicle into auto shop, they replaced the airbag sensor located under the battery and cleared codes. The airbag light remained off for approx 30 days. Light kept coming back on every few days.i kept taking vehicle to auto shop where thy would clear the codes. This is a weekly routine. I have been informed that eventually the light will stay on permanently. Is this true? and is there a recall for airbags on this vehicle? i'm afraid the airbags might deploy while being driven

My 2003 matrix had less than 40,000 original miles when the dash air bag light came on.toyota recalled the matrix for this problem and was corrected in 2013.my 2003 tacoma truck's current mileage is only 29,667 original miles.at approximately 28,000 miles the dash air bag light came on.a friend who specializes in toyota repairs checked it and said it was the b1100-air bag sensor module..toyota has yet to recall the 2003 tacoma for an air bag problem.

Takata recalli would like to know why this vehicle is not on the recall list .does this truck have takata airbags?did takata make these bags safe but all others defective.this needs to be checked out as well.i do not feel safe because we have been hearing about these dangerous airbags for years yet this vehicle does not have the recall.are you sure of their safety?!!

I'm filing the compliant to acknowledge the fact that these older fly by wire throttle bodies have a faulty tps that is only replaceable as a whole new throttle body. The cost on them is between 700 to 1000 dollars. My tacoma do have a faulty tps on it. I'm waiting to save up enough money to replace the throttle body however, there have been numerous times that upon pulling out into traffic it has acted up. When this happens you get a very bad hesitation or lack of acceleration to the point of endangering myself and other drivers. The hesitation has lasted as long as 3 to 5 seconds before the throttle will finally respond. The condition will only happen during hot summer months. Thank you for your time and would like the see this looked into and or resolved. I will be able to replace the throttle body because i work at a dealership and get the parts at cost. However some people may not be able to save up the cost for the new part. Thanks again sincerely!!

While the vehicle was in the process of being driven it began to develop electrical problems.ultimately the electrical problem developed into a fire that damaged components under the hood as well as causing structural damages.at the present time the vehicle remains in its post fire condition awaiting repair.the vehicle involved is a 2003 toyota tacoma double cab, it was purchased new and was and is under full factory warranties.as of yet nothing has been done by toyota or by the local dealership to address the problem and to repair the vehicle.instead, both toyota and their local dealership have repeatedly instructed me to absorb the problem myself by turning it into my insurance company.this then exposes me to costs outside of the warranty, makes the insurance carrier responsible for a defect that should be coverable by warranty and does nothing to assure the cause of the fire was forever corrected to prevent a re-occurrence to either myself or to others who may suffer the same problems.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While driving various speeds, a chiming noise activated in the vehicle. The failure occurred several times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 110,700.

We bought this truck in 2015 and was never informed of any recalls.we found out about the frame recall when it broke.it also has 5 other recalls which we were never informed on those either so when i called toyota they said the frame recall and the frame warranty had both expired because the previous owner didn't make good on the recall letter he received but maybe he never received one because i know we never did on any of the 6 recalls and we still haven't even after calling them.we are still paying almost $400 a month and still have 13 payments left and we cant even drive it.i would say if toyota never sent out the letters then that's not our fault and they should make good on the recalls and fix them including the frame replacement which is their fault due to a maufactuiring mess up.

While driving down the highway, i moved into the left lane to pass another car. When i stepped on the accelerator the nose pitched forward and the engine felt like it was not getting any gas. I was able to press the accelerator nearly all the way to the floor to continue getting power to the engine, but the first 2/3 of the pedal stroke were completely unresponsive. A check engine light came on and it was diagnosed as a throttle body issue. After doing some research, this seems to be a well documented issue on a number of tacoma forums. The cost to replace will be $1400 dollars new or $400 dollars used. I am skeptical to purchase a refurbished part due to the known issue with it. This has happened a total of 6 times in 3.5 years of owning the vehicle and seems to occur in colder weather. Typically after pulling over and shutting the car off for 30 seconds, the issue is gone. It will undoubtedly happen again, but you never know when.

Instrument panel lights sequential failure. There are two lights for the instrument panel. One failed and then 1 month later, the other light failed.

I purchased my 2003 toyota tacoma 4x4 in may of 2003 in which as of this date of 12.29.06 my truck has 43k miles on it and is in excellant condition. Over the course of the past 6 months i have had to spend thousands of dollars on this truck and still can not drive it. I have had to put a brandnew crankshaft kit in my truck due to the keyway on the crankshaft shearing off resulting in my truck shutting down. After inspecting my truck by a certified mechanic the key was not there after it had sheared off in which parts had moved forward and ground into the metal. After the crankshaft replacement i continued to have more and more problems with the truck. I have replaced the crankshaft, harmonic balancer, new fan, oil pump because the truck will not hold oil pressure, mass air flow sensor, crank sensor, cam sensor's, re-setting of the computer and labor cost. I picked my truck up on a friday after it came back from huntersville, nc at lake norman toyota in which the truck was hooked up and was given a clean bill of health but, the truck left me stranded once again on sunday night at 7:00 pm in which i had to have a roll back pick it up for the fourth time. The oil light came on when the engine would idle less than 1k rpms in which it then finally had to be shut off as soon as i heard this due to the sounds of metal rubbing metal. The truck is now located at leatherman auto located in newton, nc (828.465.5269) in which the owner, scott has not made any repairs to this truck yet. The check engine light has came on in all four instances as well as the oil light and other lights and i then loose control of my truck due to it shutting down. I was on i-40 traveling at 65-70 mph when my truck started jerking again and then i lost my power steering again and had to fight with the truck to get it off the road. The truck is stalling out in which i am in fear of either myself or one of my family members becoming injured or possibly killed because of this instance.

I purchased a 2003 toyota tacoma.i have had a problem with the brake light coming on inthe winter.when i press the brake the first time the light stays on until the truck warms up; then goes out.i took the truck to toyota and they couldn't find a problem.now the light is periodically coming up and staying on a couple of minutes in the warm weather.i again took it to toyota and they again couldn't find a problem.

2003 toyota tacoma instrument panel light failure.

The contact owns a2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the ignition switch failed. The vehicle was towed to middletown toyota located at 634 newfield st, middletown, ct 06457(860) 347-7294. The diagnostic testing stated that the rear frame was cracked. The ignition switch was repaired however the frame had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 250,000. In march 2019 ignition failed towed it home. When tow truck picked it up we saw broken frame. Westbrook toyota repaired spare tire carrier recall (2016).

I was driving down the highway experience loss of power such as fuel push the throttle down a couple of times it pick back up happened to more times within 10 mi1nutes it did not throw a code been checking it may relate to a throttle body problem been reading about problems with the throttle body do not want this to happen in heavy traffic or pulling out in front of traffic please let me know what or how to take care of this problem

I was driving my vehicle 2003 toyota tacoma on highway 156 downhill to hollister, cai was going approx 65 mph and it just jerked back and lost power i was only able to go 40mph no higher , the engine light has not turned on and it seems i am getting no kind of diagnostic error of what could be wrong.

Car stumbles/hesitates intermittently at various speeds. Have spent time/money trouble shooting the problem/making repairs with no affect on problem.problem appears to be drive by wire throttle body toyota part # 22030-62020 (toyota data per vin shows this part should not be on my car). Toyota has a program to replace throttle body if found to be defective (for a limited time) except problem cannot be duplicated in the shop and it does not cause any codes. On-line research indicated problem is with the throttle position sensor (tsp) or the accelerator pedal position sensor (apps) on the throttle body failing. Research indicates toyota is aware of this problem as they will replace part free if proven defective and apparently has redesigned their throttle body. Issue is, most of the time the dealer cannot reproduce the problem in the shop and since it does not cause a code they will not honor the warranty program because they will not be reimbursed without proving the part is defective. The problem with this throttle body has been identified in vehicles with as little as 30000 miles to over 250000 miles per on-line research.while riding with me the dealer's technician has seen and felt the stumble/hesitation (rpm drops about 150 to 250 rpm when traveling at a constant speed for no reason) but has never been able to duplicate it in the shop or identify the cause. This stumbling/hesitation occurs everytime the car has been driven for longer than 20-30 minutes since the 1st occurrence.twice it has stumble while making a left turn at an intersection causing me to almost get hit by an on coming vehicle.this throttle body is a non-serviceable part and cannot be repaired, per the dealer it is required to be replaced as a unit.this part needs to be recalled and toyota required to replace it at no cost now instead of only when it fails before someone is killed.

I was driving my 2003 tacoma when the battery and oil lights came on and the truck became undriveable. When the lights went off i was able to drive again.i had truck towed to mechanic and found out that crankshaft bolt was broken/sheared off.had truck towed to dealership for confirmation - they confirmed.had insurance adjuster look at it to determine if related to any accidents - no relation.called toyota corp and they said that bolt should not break unless under extreme torque of defect.mechanic, dealership and insurance adjuster all said the same.the bolt is made out of case-hardened steel. I have not had any major work done to the truck that would involve the crankshaft bolt!!dealership is quoting cost of approx $4000 for short block repair.if bolt is/was defective i should not have to pay for any of the repairs that should fall on toyota whether or not the truck is out of warranty.i need this fixed!

While starting up the vehicle idling is high for twelve minutes.the driver has to press down on the brakes to prevent the vehicle from accelerating.the driver drove the vehicle to dealer for analysis.the technician can not duplicated the problem. *mr

While exiting a 65 mph tollway during the rain.the driver encountered a puddle approximately 18" - 24" deep and ~70' long going ~35mph.about halfway through the puddle the vehicle started to faulter.upon exiting it totally stopped and would not turn over.the repair shop reports that the engine had ingested water, destroying the internal workings and it would require a long block replacement at a cost of ~$6,500.

Well, i have owned my toyota tacoma 03' since it was new and was aware of some unusual patterns of increased engine revving for years. I told my mechanic specifically about the issue and he really didn't believe it was acting that way. The first time i experienced this phenomenon was when i left the vehicle idling while i went into a gas station convenience store and was alerted of the idling to be higher than when i went in the store. I was startled because it was revving on its own, higher and higher until it leveled off at a bit higher than normal and finally to average idling. It was creepy. This happened on several occasions mostly when i would leave the car idling. Only 1 incident occurred while at a stop light i was idling in park and it began to idle higher but not as i should notice absolutely something was wrong. When i shifted from park to drive the revving increased and i shuttled ahead towards the vehicle in front of my truck without pressing the gas and as i was about to hit the vehicle ahead of mine the engine slowed again. I was extremely terrified at that moment. Nothing strange occurred that day after that. I questioned if i had pressed the gas or if maybe something, somehow, i might have over looked, but i decided that there was definitely a strange sticking going on in the engine. I also considered if it was the gas peddle perhaps, but i ruled that out as, it would rev mostly on idles on its own.

Purchased used vehicle from private seller.on the first day of use, after obtaining new title, tags, insurance coverage, the check engine light came on.the following day scheduled service w/ the local toyota dealer.upon inspection was told that the truck needed a catalytic converter and there was a recall for the lower front ball joints that the dealer will replace for free.the dealer had to order the parts.after receiving the parts and upon start of the repairs, i received a phone informing me that the frame was rusted and the vehicle is deemed unsafe to drive. I was given an 800 phone number to call and deal directly with toyota corporate office.i am patiently awaiting for a response.

My engine light on my 2003 toyota tacoma keeps coming on.i sent $1000 to replace the oxygen sensor and then the evap connector assembly.the engine light is still on.the repair shop told me they've replaced many of these on toyotas.

Leaky water pump discovered upon routine change of timing belt on 2003 toyota tacoma 2wd prerunner. Discovered complete lack of gasket and woefully inadequate amount of sealant apparently applied at factory. (no more than 1/8" wide after compression between water pump housing and engine block) engine continually used a small amount of coolant/antifreeze and over time had built up a substantial volume of sludge/crusty coolant around water pump housing and timing belt (crankshaft) pulley. Although absent in this instance, this build-up has the potential to break loose and fall between the timing belt and pulley and ultimately cause timing belt breakage. Replaced belt and water pump. Re-manufactured water pump is equipped with a gasket.

Dt:the contact states that after suddenly braking on level ground the vehicle stalled. On three other occasions it stalledwhile trying to increase speed on an incline.one of these occasions while drivingbetween40-45mph the vehicle would restart after being completely turned off.the dealership could not duplicate the problem.updated 11/29/2005 -

My 2003 toyota tacoma v6 sr5 double cab 4x4 has a condition where the throttle cuts out while accelerating. This is a very dangerous situation when pulling into traffic or while driving in traffic.

Vehicle has a history of problems that the dealer cannot determine the causes.vehicle does not properly shift into gear, has a rough idle, anda knocking noise in the engine.dealer could not duplicate the problems because they wereintermittent.

I brought this car and it was in a accident. The dealership lied to me because they toldme that al the parts were going to be covered by the guarantee. How ever all the parts were not covered and i had to pay some of the.i went to the dealership and complained but they would not listen to me.the car also leaks oil but the dealership doesn't pay attention.

Intermittent check engine light and rough idle - 2003 toyota tacoma 2.7l auto, double cab, 55k milescheck engine light came on.took vehicle to local chain shop who diagnosed error code po511 - idle air control valve (iacv).toyota parts department prices this part at $226 and service manager indicated $249 for labor (not including tax). Vehicle currently has 55k miles on it and "engine" should be covered by 6 yr/60k mile powertrain warranty.took vehicle to dealer (to have other recalls corrected) who indicated a $90 fee was required just to diagnose check engine light.toyota customer service indicated the iacv was only covered to 3yr/36k and that i should pay dealer fee and seek "factory assistance" for any costs to repair.i contend that this type of a part - not serviceable/maintainable by the customer, should be guaranteed against failure for more than ~50k miles and repair should be covered by manufacturer.

After driving the vehicle for40 minutes to one hour fumes become sickening tothe point that it was unbearable. Dealer checked the vehicle, had even kept the vehicle in the shop, typed out a report, butfumes were still coming into the vehicle.

Purchased a 2003 toyota tacoma on june 4, 2003, and paid cash in full.the air conditioning (a/c) in the truck went out.i have taken the truck to covington pike three separate times for repairs, and each time they failed to repair the a/c.i informed the manager on duty that i would be going out of town for the labor day weekend and would need a loaner truck.i was told by the manager that he could not help me in any way.i have recently began new employment and, having to leave work due to the incompetence of covington pike toyota has left a bad impression with my new employer.

The consumer states the front brakes wear prematurely. The parts have been replaced three times, however the problem still exist the cause has yet to be determined. Please provide additional information.brake calipers were replaced; rotors resurfaced; and steering knuckle were all replaced, however problem still exist.customer also stated that the a/c compressor is noisy.a/c compressor and compressor clutch were replaced.in addition the cruise control was inoperative.but not problem was found by the dealer.

While traveling on the highway water is on floorboard on the driver's side.

The headlight harness plug burned up i had to replace it headlights burn out with in months as do tail lights i have replaced both bulbs three times in the last six months.and replaced tail light bulbs twice in sixmonths

Since all new vehicles and prior were standardizing plastic headlights why is it that the clouding/hazy headlight is not a safety recall issue or a replacement issue? you can use the restoration kits but after so many applications it will not work anymore. My vehicle has started with the clouding/hazing and i have been using kits but the symptom still comes back. Will this be addressed?

After driving for approximately 2 hours, on three separate occasions, the vehicle would intermittently lose significant power.it felt as though i had taken my foot off the throttle. After my own investigation, i learned that toyota has a history of this problem, particularly with their 2003/2004 model tacoma's. Evidently, their accelerator pedal position sensor (part of their throttle by wire design) fails. This created a few serious safety situations for me when the throttle failed to respond when needed. After reporting this to the dealer, they inspected the vehicle and did determine the apps was at fault. Numerous accounts of this happening with other owner's is readily available via the various bulletin boards on the web. Compounding the issue, is the fact that this sensor cannot be replaced without replacing the entire throttle body assembly at a cost of $1000 or so. Toyota initially responded that they've never heard of this issue yet others have reported to them prior to me which indicates either they have a very poor process for logging issues or are trying to avoid another recall.

The check engine light came on as the car decelerated.i had to depress the gas peddle to the floor to accelerate the vehicle.took it to the dealer and they told me the choke was sticking and i needed to have an upper engine cleaning.10000 miles later the same thing happened.now i need a new throttle body.

Gasoline tank broke loose while driving after corrosion caused failure of retaining strap/brackets. Fire did not occur, drive shaft kept tank from completely separating from vehicle.2003 toyota tacoma had already been recalled for corrosion problems in april 2010.

Gas tank felloff, till it was 2 to 3 inches off ground.

My 2003 toyota tacoma v6 sr5 double cab 4x4 has a condition where the throttle cuts out while accelerating. This is a very dangerous situation when pulling into traffic or while driving in traffic.

Toyota tacoma, 2003 acceleration drops to 25% inadvertently. This is a well documented issue on several of the toyota tacoma bulletin boards yet toyota has done nothing to remedy this highly dangerous situation. The accelerator pedal position sensor fails and drops the acceleration to 25% without warning. This happened to me while doing 75 on the highway and i was nearly rear ended by a semi truck! i have complained to toyota with no response. This is well documented and needs to be addressed!

Slow fill up at the gas pumps. The tank takes 10-12 minutes to fill. It takes the gas very slowly. Pump will keep clicking off. The pump hose has to be kept half to three-quarters out in order that the gas flow into the tank.

My engine light on my 2003 toyota tacoma keeps coming on.i sent $1000 to replace the oxygen sensor and then the evap connector assembly.the engine light is still on.the repair shop told me they've replaced many of these on toyotas.

The problem that exists is on my 2003 toyota tacoma. It will all of a sudden lose power and have no throttle response, almost as if it was hitting an engine governor. The rpms usually drop anywhere from 200-500 and then comes back up. The power would slowly come back after keeping my foot on the throttle. It consistently does it after accelerating out of an intersection (usually around 25 mph or while cruising (around both 45 mph or 75 mph) on the highway. This drop of power or lack thereof is a huge safety issue, especially when pulling into an intersection or needing quick acceleration to avoid an accident. I have read about many others with the same issues with their late model tacomas. The parts to fix the issue are very costly and the problem seems to be widespread. The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked in the garage, rodents ate the fuel line causing a fuel leak. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to haley toyota of roanoke (1530 courtland rd ne, roanoke, va 24012) where it was diagnosed with the fuel line needing to be replaced. The vehicle had been repaired twice however, the issue recurred. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000. The vin was unavailable.

Check engine light came oncharcoal canister needed to be replacedapparently this occurs often to other toyota ownerspart should last more than just over 3 yearsfiling complaint to see if this is a defective part or design that could lead to later problemscost $560 to replace.

While driving in traffic the throttle stuck at above normal idle and the check engine light came on.i was able to exit the traffic but the idle would not come back to normal curb idle.what my mechanic has told me is that the throttle body assembly has failed and they can only get the part from the dealer.if this had happened on the freeway the outcome could have not been so good.i hope toyota is aware of this problem and going to address the situation.

The fuel tank strap broke while i was grocery shopping. I heard the tank rubbing against the drive shaft when i pulled out of my parking space. The vehicle is not drive able, and i believe this to be a serious issue.

While driving on the highway, i experienced an issue with the vehicle's performance under moderate acceleration (approximately 3000 rpm).the engine will no longer output power that is proportional to the amount i am requesting with the gas pedal. Once the issue occurs, the maximum power output is only 2000 rpm with the gas pedal fully pressed. The issue is occasionally resolved by shutting the engine off and waiting a few moments. The check engine light comes on with the code po120.the code translates to a faulty throttle position sensor but toyota will not replace the $60 sensor individually, they will only replace the $1,200 throttle body that includes a new sensor.

My truck was part of the frame recall and i had the frame replaced in 2010, since then i have had to pay to replace other rusted parts that were not "part of the recall".first the spare tire mount rusted off and the tire fell out from under the truck while driving.next the entire exhaust needed to be replaced as it too had rusted out.last year to pass inspection i needed to pay $1600.00 for a catalytic converter.this year i cannot pass inspection as the check engine light is on and despite 2 attempts to find the problem (and $200.00 later) the light remains on.the suspicion is the gas tank is rusted "at the top" and will cost me $1800.00 to replace.i just received a "preliminary" recall for the spare tire mount, i imagine i will receive a recall notice in a few years for the gas tank as well.ridiculous that only some parts were recalled...and ridiculous that i have to pay to replace the others... Not to mention the inconvenience.

Cover for gas tank totally rotted out and tank is exposed.this vehicle has recall 9355 - emergency spare tire.not sure why this isn't also covered. Looks unsafe to me.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated after refueling the vehicle, fuel would leak onto the ground. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic three times where the fuel cap was replaced each time. The failure persisted and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the fuel tank became detached from the vehicle. The contact spoke with the manufacturer and was told that the fuel tank was not covered under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 73,000.

Doors do not always close with safety latch upon entering or exiting."normal" swing is applied to close the door.have found door completely able to be opened, even though i had locked vehicle with remote.

I have a 2003 toyota tacoma 4 wheel drive truck with 26,560 miles.there is a continuous failure in the parking brake (previously called emergency brake).apparently, the parking brake design is such that it "freezes up" giving an indication on the dash with the "brake light" illuminated. The brake is not engaged and thereby gives a false reading that the brake is engaged. However, as a real problem occurs the drivers are lulled into a false security that the only problem is that a warning brake light is lit. When a real problem occurs with the brakes, including the ordinary brake system, there can be a more serious safety problem such as causing the rear brake shoes to lock onto the rear drums. More information can be obtained on this problem at http://www.ehow.com/way_5649717_tacoma-emergency-brake-problems.htmltoyota has recalled their 2005 and 2006 tacoma trucks for this problem but not any earlier models. The dealers indicate that it can be repaired at a cost of $442.12. Since this is a problem that can involve safety and because toyota has known about the problem for some time and indeed has recalled certain model years for fixing the problem i believe a recall for all tacoma trucks should be made with the company fixing the problem at no cost to the consumer. Thus far there has not been an injury due to this problem.thank you.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's parking brake cable snapped.also, the pin froze causing the cable to snap when trying to apply the parking brake.the service dealer determined the pins needed to be replaced, and the new pins would continue to freeze again and would continuously need to be replaced.

I have a 2003 toyota tacoma and the parking brake remains on and the parking brake does not work.i will take it to the dealership to hopefully fix the problem but i don't think i should have to pay to fix the faulty parking brake. This is safety equipment and should be the responsibility of toyota to fix. I noticed that there have been several other complaints about the same faulty item. One faulty parking brake is one too many.all vehicles should be equipment with a functioning parking brake.

2003 toyota tacoma parking brake is not working properly.*mrwhen the parking brake was released, the brake did not completely disengage and could be heard dragging until it kicked off.occasionally it refused to release and required re-application before finally releasing. When the parking brake was applied, it did not always hold the vehicle even on a modest slope such as the consumers driveway.

2003 toyota tacoma.consumer is having a number of issues with the vehicle. Front drive shaft broke due to rust, frame rusting, and transmission cooler was leaking.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While driving approximately 40 mph over a bump and depressing the brake pedal, the transmission jerked suddenly. The failure occurred every day for the past month. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 212,000.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While the vehicle was at a stop light attempting to shift into another gear, the shift lever failed to change gears. The contact stated that the ignition was turned off and back on in order for the vehicle to shift. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the center force clutch failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 86,000.

Oncein a while when i am driving my 2003 toyota tacomavin[xxx] it starts going off the lane and requires extra power to get back on track. This has happened 3 time so far on the local surface streets here in tempe. I have not experienced this behavior on highway. Also after that the hand-break light will come on and it will not go off. I did not even put hand break. The hand-break light will go off after a while.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I am concerned about the rear axle housing on my 2003 toyota tacoma. The metal on the reward side of the ring gear housing is very thin and will rust out and begin to leak. I have personally seen gear oil leaking through pinholes in the rear axle on two other toyota trucks.the thin metal and lack of anti-corrosion treatment on the axle housing creates several significant hazards.1. Eventual failure of the mechanical components if leak is not detected. If the failure occurs while in motion this can cause an accident if it is a severe failure that locks up the rear wheels.2. Structural integrity of the rear axle housing. The metal is weakened due to the corrosion and can possible cause the housing to bend or break. Again causing an accident.3. Pollution. The leaking gear oil through the rusted axle housing causes pollution of ground water and other environmental concerns.

Rust out of the differential cover. All of the oil in the differential leaked out. No parts are available from toyota. The complete differential must be replaced at a cost of over $ 1,000.00. This is a major problem as per many toyota forums on the net.toyota will not stand by this repair and will not admit to any problem about rust.

After approx. Putting 5,000 miles on my tacoma 2003 double cab, i started noticing when normally bringing the vehicle to a complete stop, there is a cluncking sound from the rear end. The harder you stop the vehicle the worse it gets. It's like getting slightly rearended by another vehicle. If it doesn't make this cluncking feeling and sound as you come to a stop, it will do it once you let off of the brake pedal to idle/roll forward to advance at a traffic light, stop sign, etc. This appears to be getting worse as i continue to drive the vehicle which now has 24,000 miles on it. I took it to ron carter auto world and the service department tells me that toyota is aware of this and considered it normal. If this is normal why don't other vehicles do this? it gets annoying looking into the rear view mirror every time this happens thinking that you've be rearended by another vehicle.

Vehicle loses power unexpectedly and is inconsistent. Has happened before to me and many, many times by others with the same vehicle.a poorly designed/engineered accelerator pedal position sensor appears to be the issue. Toyota has been notified by me multiple times but refuses to acknowledge this serious flaw in their vehicle.most recently, i was nearly rear ended when on the freeway, the vehicle suddenly lost power. Fortunately the driver behind me was conscious and was able to make an emergency maneuver to the other lane.someone will die from these problems!this has been well documented by many at http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13283&highlight=apps+fixi ask that the nthsa please investigate and do something about this. It appears many of us, including myself, have submitted complaints on this issue and nothing has been done. One may argue that this is an 8 year old vehicle so no reason to investigate. This issue has been brought to your's and toyota's attention since 2005. It needs to be investigated!please.

Vehicle has a history of problems that the dealer cannot determine the causes.vehicle does not properly shift into gear, has a rough idle, anda knocking noise in the engine.dealer could not duplicate the problems because they wereintermittent.

On june 11,2010 i was changing the anti freeze in my 2003 toyota tacoma.the vehicle was in park and running to warm engine to open thermostat to get more coolant from the lower block . Well i decide to boost the engine speed by manually moving the throttle .to my surprise my truck lurched backbefore coming to a stop i check the shifter it was still in park .but a further examthe vehicle stuck in reverse and will not go into any forward gear. I m' going to check to see if the linkage needs adjustment everybody i talk with said it was not suppose to move unless the brake was applied first.

About two weeks ago driver accidentally bumped the shifter and it went into neutral without pressing the lock. Consumer considers this to be a serious safety issue.the dealer was contacted, whostated this is normal for that vehicle.

Clutch pedal bushing is made out of plastic & should be made out of rubber, it wears out & starts to squeak real bad and eventually there is metal to metal contact which causes the whole clutch assy. To fail.

At 21,000 miles heard loud noise for differential, and bad glunk when leaving stop light, toyota never put in gear lube to cover up the bad welds on right end of differential (that would have leaked if they did put in gear lube), no reply from e-mails, phone calls, talking to cust. Rep, (requested arbitration forms by phone and e-mail 6 times, never received them even though toyota lied and said they will send them.) .

Truck always pulled to the left since new, took it in to toyota dealer 4 times, they said nothing is wrong with it. At 21,000 miles i heard a bad noise coming from the differential, i pulled over and removed the fill plug only to find no oil in it.so i put in 4 oz. Short of a quart of 80w90 gear oil. (pulled to left because a wheel bearing wasn't getting and lubrication).returned to dealer, they said we can't find a leak, 50 miles later i pulled the fill plug and found the oil to be black as can be with metal in it. Dealers answer is to come back when it breaks. So now i am stuck witha 2003 tacoma with a 200,000 mile differential. (what a shame).

Toyota has recalled my truck due to a rusted out frame. The toyota dealership has elected to replace my frame with a new frame. This large procedure has left me insecure about the outcome. This truck is now 10 years old and as soon as the start wrenching on all the system components to disassemble and re assemble my truck i am afraid that they shorten the life of existing components due to added wear and tear. The dealer will need to remove and reinstall brake lines and gas lines that have been set in place and have extensive corrosion this will lead to premature failure and unsafe operation. Most mechanic know that a rusted and set bolt that has not been moved for 10 years has a 50% chance of removal. In order to remove such a "stuck" bolt they will need to apply heat and impact and may weaken the existing parts, steel, and bolts to lower levels out of tolerance that the vehicle as designed originally. Additionally, this service is completed in a location with out the controls, quality assurance and testing that is in place in a factory where new vehicles are built. There is uncertainty that this vehicle will be assembled, tested, and inspected according themanufacturer's guidelines for a factory produced vehicle. This leads to uncertainty that the vehicle will not operate within the intended manufactures guidelines for safety, roll over protection, and crash performance. I propose that a total frame recall and replacement (or any large integral part that will impacted the vehicle operation) on any vehicle shall not be allowed given the uncertainty described. The consumer stated there appeared to be an oil leak coming from the front differential boot that was not apparent prior to the frame replacement procedure.

Differential made a bad noise at 21,221 miles checked gear lube only to find it empty. Took it to toyota city where they said it was fine. Took it to independent repair shop, said obvious leak on pass. Side end of diff, axle. I had 15,000 mile service done at toyota city ($165.00), they never checked the diff, gear lube even though the owners maintenance book says to inspect diff, gear lube. (no repairs were even attempted at toyota city). Brought the missed diff. Fluid check to cust. Service reps attention, said she will talk to service department, a month later, and still no reply .

The clutch on my 2003 toyota tacoma became jammed while trying to shift in the middle of an intersection. The bushing where the clutch pivots dislodged and jammed the clutch so it was unable to be depressed. A car was coming straight into the side of my vehicle when i stomped on the clutch as hard as i could, breaking the bushing and letting the clutch depress. If i had not acted quickly it could have been a fatal accident. This was on a highway intersection. I took it in to toyota and they did not tell me the bushing had broke and was missing they just put grease on it so it would stop squeaking. I just found out this year at toyota that the bushing had exploded and fallen out and now the warranty has expired. I am more concerned about someone else being stuck in a situation and not being able to get their vehicle in gear.

I noticed a small hole underneath the passenger side of the frame just in front of the leaf spring and now the hole has grown to the size of a quarter. There is also quite alot of rust underneath the truck as well as the spare tire holder. I live in california and this truck was purchased from a toyota dealership in pennsylvania. Thanks for your cooperation. Sincerely,[xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Seat belts won't retract.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that both the front driver and passenger side seat belts were failing and would not restrain through the holder. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that there was not a recall for the vehicle and advised that the contact was responsible for repairing the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 83,000.

Seat belts won't retract.

The metal bar inside the seat headrest is coming through the cloth. There is no padding between the metal bar and your head. In a crash you would hit the metal bar inside the headrest with your head. Other people on the internet have complained of the same problem.

The foam inside the driver's head rest has deteriorated so a steel bar is covered by only fabric and no foam.it creates a hazard because in case of a rear end crash, the driver's head will impact a steel bar instead of a foam pad.i contacted toyota.they consider it out of warranty and want almost $500 for a new head restraint.this is like saying the seatbelts or airbags don't have to work for the life of the vehicle.

Foam in head restraints have deteriorated to the point where the steel bar is only covered by the fabric of the head restraint. This should be considered a safety hazard. If a person in a car accident was to have their head hit the head restraint, serious injury would occur because of the exposed steel bar.

The front seats on my 2003 toyota tacoma 4x4 xtracab rock on their tracks when i drive on rough surfaces.i took the vehicle to my nearest dealer and they said they would apply a shim in order to solve the noise problem.however the shims were already installed during manufacturing, so the dealer said they could not fix the problem.

Once you fasten the seat belt, it tightens with any movent and restrains the body to the point that disables movement or even breathing. This is very unsafe.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 40 mph, the driver side front tire stoped spinning forcing the vehicle to veer to the left to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 145,000.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact indicated that while having the emissions inspection performed, the technician noticed that there was extensive rust on the underbody, shields, welding, lower frame, upper frame and the sub-frame of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who indicated that the plate by the brakes was rusted. The technician welded the frames as an interim fix and suggested that the manufacturer needed to remove the corroded frames and components and rebuild the frame or it may potentially fracture. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and refused to provide any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. In addition, the contact indicated that the brake pedal was stuck and adjustments had to be made in order to release the pedal. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 47,600.

Coming to a stop approx 2 mph the engine suddenly revved very loudly and the truck show forward.the brakes did not stop the truck. I swerved to avoid the campsite we were at and hit a tree very hard. The engine however continued to rev loudly and i shifted to park.with the engine still very loud and the wheels spinning i had to shut the engine by removing the key.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While driving 35-40 mph, the front suspension exploded. The front passenger side tire flew underneath the vehicle and the brake line snapped. The vehicle moved onto the side of the road. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 172,661.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While driving approximately 75 mph, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to slow down. The parking brake was engaged and the vehicle came to a stop. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where it was discovered that the brake fluid reservoir was empty. The contact dispensed the brake fluid. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The mechanic stated that the entire frame and brake positioning valve exhibited excessive corrosion. The manufacturer issued a customer satisfaction program related to the frame, which expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 133,000.

So in december i took my tacoma to the dealership for a regular frame inspection after learning upon the issue. The truck is in almost perfect condition, spotless inside and out. The frame failed inspection, and i was unable to drive the vehicle home. First off, a service rep at the dealership tried to send me off to a friend of his who could "patch" up the frame so that it would pass inspection (great idea, right?). Toyota has provided me with a rental, but the only rental they would give me is a corolla. I live in the mountains, and bought the truck so that i would be able to handle the rough winter weather. I have already had to call out of work as a result of being unable to drive through the snow. I am looking at a date of mid march at the earliest (most likely longer) until i am able to have my truck back, depleting the whole purpose of me having a truck. I have tried getting toyota to buy the truck back. I love my truck, and i plan on continuing to drive toyota due to the well-known reliability of these vehicles. I understand that this is a sort of bad luck incident, but considering that rust spreads, i already know that i am going to have to put more money into the vehicle to combat the rust corrosion that has already begun due to a faulty frame. This is obviously already occurring, considering that it is not just the frame that is corroded, but also the brake lines. I am not looking in any way to cheat toyota, i am just attempting to have a safe vehicle to drive, and i worry that since this corrosion has already started, replacing the frame is only putting off the issue until it becomes noticeable on the rest of the vehicle. If anyone has been able to successfully have toyota buy back a 2001-2004 model tacoma, i would love to know how they accomplished this.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle did not stop. As a result, thefront driver's side of the vehicle crashed into the rear passenger side of another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries reported. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. Updated 09/10/15*lj

The back brakes on my tacoma froze up causing the vehicle to spin out of control. I could of been killed or seriously hurt. The brakes froze up causing the skid and the parking brake cable snapped. There was a new frame put on under a recall along with the cable less than 2 years ago. I notified toyota of a possible defect cause i don't want anyone hurt but they have not responded back.

The rear brake lines that connect over the rear axle rusted into and caused the brake fluid to leak from the braking system.when the truck was taken into a local service center for repair to the brakes the service center representative informed me that they could not repair the brake lines because the frame was rusted so severely that if put on a lift the frame would fall apart and the truck would break in half. The service center determined also the truck was not safe to drive. Service records at the dealership are on file where the truck was taken to the dealership for inspection of the frame and reported the truck did not have a rust issue as described in the letters i received and heeded the warning to have the truck inspected.

I bought a 2003 toyota tacoma from a toyota dealer in december 2011 with 81,841 miles on it. Upon driving the vehicle from tennessee to oregon a leak in the oil pan appeared. I looked under the vehicle and to my surprise the whole undercarriage of the vehicle was extremely rusting. The leak was from the oil pan that was corrected badly. I was able to make it from there to my home in oregon having to add about one quart of oil. The distance was about 700 miles. I took it to my local toyota dealer and he informed me that i had major rust problems under the vehicle. The gas tank shield is gone due to rust. The front end suspension was so rusty they couldn,t get some of the bolts out. They had to remove some of the front end suspension to replace the oil pan. Both front backing plates for the rotors where rusted away. No alignment could be done because of the rust. I had the front end replace with good used parts and when they attempted to align the vehicle the front tie rod broke due to rust. The whole frame assembly is very rusty. I find out now that there was a voluntary recall of frame which i did not know about. This vehicle was bought from a toyota dealer in tennessee in december of 2011. They never said a word to me about the rust problem. They did a oil change and they also replaced the emergency brake cable so they had to be aware of the rust problem. The vehicle a find out came from new york originally. They say they will help out with repair costs so far but what about the frame rust. This dealership withheld vital information from me. Toyota of america says the frame recall was voluntary and has expired. I feel this is a safety problem that needs taken care of.

2003 toyota tacoma would not steer safely. Upon inspection mechanic determined the vehicle needed new tires due to the vehicle being out of alignment.consumer was not notified of a recall regarding the brakes.the toyota dealer refused to replace the right and left ball joint useless the consumer paid for the repairs.

Consumer complained about a brake problem. When brakes are applied, there is vibration if consumer's foot is on brakepedal, and vehicle does not stop. Driver must push the brakepedal down a second or third time to get the vehicle to stop.

While braking 70 mph brake pedal went to the floor. Vehicle stalled , and the consumer had the vehicle towed. The dealership repaired the problem.

Very loose steering wheel. Problem is the slip shaft in the steering column. Over time the lover shaft wears and the steering becomes loose and sloppy. Problem first shows up as looseness in the wheel and eventually turns into a clunk when driving over minor rough roads. From talking to mechanics and other tacoma owners this is a very common problem that toyota will not address. Problems include difficulty maintaining control over rough pavement. Wandering at all speeds. Major direction changes when breaking on all roads. Smooth or rough.over all the truck is very difficult to drive. I've had the truck actually change lanes when i hit an unexpected rough patch of road at appox 30 mph. There was nothing i could due because of the slop in the steering wheel. Please note that this truck is very well maintained and i have gone through the entire front suspension and steering trying to fix this problem with no luck. I'm now faced with spending even more money to replace a steering column.

Power steering pump having issues i can fill it up to the full line and it will go down to half empty everytime i've done it therefore steering is very tight and difficult, the truck bed has huge holes rusted/corrosion completely through it on both sides, the spare tire mechanism is rusted so badly it doesn't work and half of it is missing due to rust/corrosion an has fallen off, and the frame broke completely in half on the driver side of the truck while i was driving it an caused the drive shaft to hang on the ground and it knocked a hole in the gas tank before i could get the truck stopped, also the suspension on the rear of the truck is not attached to the frame on the top under the bed just attached to the frame on the bottom.

Was driving down the road and the frame broke completely in half on the drivers side an caused the drive shaft to fall out and when it did it bounced up and knocked a hole in the gas tank causing me to wreck.and the bed of the truck has huge holes rusted through them.

I was making a left turn and i lost control of my 2003 toyota tacoma which at that time cause my steering wheel to lock and i ended up crashing into a wall and totaling my truck. My concern is that the steering wheel locked.

The frame on my 2003 tacoma is rusting badly! the truck only has about 98k and im the second owner. I purchased the truck on 9/3/2011. The truck in getting to the point of being unsafe to drive. The mounting points for the leaf springs are almost completely rusted away. I have never received any type of notification from toyota regarding the frame recall. I've had it looked at by my local toyota dealer and they are telling me i don't qualify for assistance because no corrosion treatment has applied.the problem with that is, i was never notified! if i had been, then they would replace the frame free of charge. I've received at least three letters from toyota for the spare tire holder rust issue, so they do know i own the truck and how to contact me.i've lived at the same location for 14 years!from what i've read, the corrosion treatment they allegedly offered didn't help anyway. I don't understand why some people were notified and other were not. There are plenty of people just like me driving these unsafe trucks. I have to wonder how many of those people are clueless about the danger they are putting them selves into, not to mention their families. At any moment you could loose total control...after the truck collapse in half after you hit a bump while driving on the highway.im sure if someone looked hard enough they could find examples of these unsafe tacomas causing serious and possibly fatalaccidents. They already know its a problem. How else could they have won a lawsuit against the vender that supplied them with these frames. They sued, and won because these frames are defective. That settlement should have been contingent upon the ongoing inspections and repairs for everyone affected.

While driving, on the highway, the rear shock absorber support mount came loose, allowing the truck bed to come loose from the frame/chassis.fortunately only the passenger side came loose, keeping the truck's bed attached to the rear of the truck i later found that this particular model has a problem with frame rot which generated a toyota bulletin.i bought the truck from toyota, as a used truck in 2011, but received no notifications of this potentially hazardous vehicle.if the bed had come loose at highway speed, any vehicle following the 2003 toyota tacoma truck would have been severely damaged or potentially resulted in the death of the people in the cars following behind me and the truck.there was a toyota bulletin issued previously which was not disclosed to me at the time of purchase.the vehicle has been in toyota shops regularly for inspections, maintenance and other repairs but the shop never mentioned anything about a "rusty" frame.upon further research, i have found multiple toyota tacoma owners with similar issues with the frame.i believe toyota knowingly manufactured and sold a defective product with serious potential safety issues.this vehicle either should be banned from the road for the safety of all drivers.

After getting off the highway, as i was pulling away at the end of the exit ramp i noticed the spare tire had fallen from the truck and was in the middle of the road.i was able to quickly back up and load the spare onto the back of the truck. I noticed part of the carrier was rusted to the spare, but the middle of the carrier had rusted through. I had participated in toyota's frame recall a little over a year ago and believe they should have seen how bad the situation was at that time, and done something to rectify the problem.i had just spent a half-hour driving home on the highway.i can't imagine the damage that could have been caused had the tire dropped at highway speeds during rush hour rather than at 10 mph!!in searching the internet, this is an all too common occurrence for older tacomas.i don't understand why this isn't considered a safety issue and subject to recall.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While drivingapproximately 10 mph the contact felt a bump and noticed thespare tire detached from under the vehicle onto the ground. The vehicle was pulled over and the contact noticed thechain which held the spare tire under the vehicle was severely corroded. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure and current mileages were 85,036.

This is a follow from a recent call with the toyotacustomer experience center (may 2, 2013).i called to get a status update on the claim referenced in case # [xxx] and was informed the claim was denied because the invoice from the dealer stated the spare tire was stolen.i never received notification that the claim was denied although the customer service agent suggested a letter has been mailed.i was instructed to return to the deal and get the ?stolen? comments removed from the invoice.the original invoice suggested the spare tire was stolen because the service department and parts person at the dealer suggested the cable would not break and the conclusion was the cable must have been cut and the tire stolen.this was in august of 2012 prior to the recall notification.there is no evidence to support that the tire was stolen.i returned to the dealer and attached is an updated invoice with ?stolen? removed.to say i am frustrated by the response from toyota is an understatement.the facts are the spare tire and assembly were missing.the dealer concluded they must have been stolen and wrote that on the original invoice.it is obvious from the recall that the cable broke and the tire and assembly were lost as a result of the this malfunction.again denied.

Both sides of my frame are rusted in front of the rear wheels .the left side has a large rusted crackwhere the leaf springs connect to the frame.the right side has a roasted whole large enough that i can put my hand inside.i contacted toyota corporate and they told me they were very sorry but all their campaigns wereexpired and they had to tell thousands of other people the same thing.vehicle is unsafe to drive and could cause me or someone else harm at any time.if toyota has talked to thousands of other people about the same problem, it seems to me they should be responsible for their faulty equipment .updated 11/19/15.

I purchased a 2003 toyota tacoma and found a water leak on my floor mat in the passenger side of the truck.apparently this has been happening every time i take the truck to the car wash.it seems to be coming from under the dash; maybe the front window.i took my truck to toyota but after a couple of attempts to find the leak with their water hose the leak could not be found.i have noticed there have been others complaining of the same problem.

Water is leaking into the passenger compartment.the dealership replaced a body seal pursuant to a tsb (they said), but problem is still occurring. I would like this repaired or for the vehicle to be replaced.

I have a toyota tacoma 2003 took it in for a recall on the spare tire carrier lift plate. Told them i heard of recall or safety issue on the frame, they said it expired. Left the truck to do recall i took it in for. They called said couldn't do the recalli brought it in for because the frame was so bad, and that they couldn't believe iwas still driving the truck and that it reallyis a safety hazard. I asked why they couldn't do the frame since it was recalled or a safety issue, again they say it was expired. I asked if he had kids, he said yes. Ask him if formula was taken off the shelves because of recall, and a month later was put back on because the recall expired would you still buy it. He said sorry he doesn't make the rules. How does a recall expire and if it was a factory defect or just a bad product that toyota used, why aren't they held accountable? went on line and read a forum and there is even a class action suite on this problem. And also even as of today toyota is still producing toyota tacoma with bad frames. I have 7 grandchildren who i help to take places, now they are stranded and myself, because my truck is still at the dealerships, because they refuse to fix it. Please i'm asking to help me with this matter.desperate inphiladelphia. Updated 01/11/2017*ct

Frame of vehicle has corroded away causing fuel tank to fall off.this happened as i pulled into place of employment.

I purchased my 2003 tacoma second hand back in 2015 which serves as my primary vehicle to this day.after returning from a year long deployment overseas, i had a few friends over on 4jun of which one was admiring my truck until he looks underneath and notices all the frame rust.he advises that there is a recall on it and i should contact my toyota dealer to get it serviced.feeling distraught, i go online and lookup recalls for my car which led me to the "frame rust" safety issue on a many toyota models to include my own.the advisement suggests safety concerns with the frame rusting through due to factory negligence in sufficiently coating with anti-corrosion materials.further research in other forums state other toyota owners describing it as frame rust altogether and not just on the spare tire plate.issues described include the issue causing the leaf spring to snap and the frame itself rusting through.inspection of my truck proves true to all accounts described. I contacted servco toyota in honolulu, hi the very next day and spoke to a nice lady.i explained how i became the owner of the vehicle since 2015 and was never made aware of this recall.she checked my vin to confirm that i was affected by it, however the recall has expired as of 2018 so there is nothing they can do.she gave me the 1-800 number to toyota which led me nowhere and kept diverting me back to servco toyota instead of their main office.....what frustrates me the most is that toyota provided me no notice or warning about this recall.so how can i react to something i was never made aware of.safety recalls should never have expiration dates as it remains a safety issue until its properly remedied.

The frame is totally rusted out, and the vehicle is unsafe to drive.i knew it had some rust issues before i purchased the truck, but i contacted toyota corporate to see if this vin was part of the recall in which toyota replaces the frame or buys back the truck.the rep i spoke to said that it was indeed in the recall and that, after i purchase i should take to local toyota dealership and if the frame has perforation then they would replace the frame.so in good faith i flew to nj, bought the truck, which only had 60k miles on it at the time, and drove it back to nc and immediately took to our local toyota dealership.they said the frame indeed had perforation and was eligible for frame replacement.i left the truck there, but they called me the next day and said they were sorry but upon further investigation, they had discovered that the 2003 tacoma was a "northern truck" and had not been properly "undercoated" and was therefore exempt from the recall that would fix the frame.i called toyota corporate and upon further checking, they said that if the 2003 tacoma had been undercoated by the original owner (at no cost to owner--a service toyota provided for free once they discovered that they had used bad steel for the frames of these trucks) then it would be covered in recall.i explained that i would not have bought the truck is their rep hadn't told me that the frame would replaced.they said the rep had not looked far enough into the matter and had told me wrong and that i was basically stuck with a truck i could not drive.i paid $6500 for this truck and i cannot put $12,000 into it to fix the frame.and i should not have to!toyota needs to be held responsible for using bad steel for these trucks.so do i keep driving it until the frame breaks and injures my, my family, or other drivers? then i will sue toyota!please help me get this resolved!

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while independently performing repairs on the vehicle, corrosion was noticed on the sub frame of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who initially stated that the sub frame had been sprayed with an anti-corrosion agent under a voluntary recall but then stated that the voluntary recall was never performed. In addition, the dealer stated that due to the corrosion, nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires) could not be performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 176,000.

Frame has rusted thru by the leaf spring and other places.toyota has a recall/campaing that covers the frame thru 2018.but they will not replaced frame because they said it was not undercoated during a specific time....they want $10,000 for new frame.. This is a known problem that should be fully recall.

Frame rusted resulting in structure failure (auto basically broke in half), call toyota headquarters and they provided no assistance.said the truck should have been sprayed.bought the truck from a dealership and feel as though the dealership should have provided inspection and spray if necessary prior to selling auto.

I discovered that both sides of the frame are broken just ahead of the rear axle. The car repair shop where i took it said that i was lucky that the break didn't result in an accident. The vehicle has received exceptional care and maintenance and the body looks new. The vehicle is used for commuting to work and other "light duty". This appears to be a very poor quality frame and i have learned that toyota had a recall on it.regrettably they show little concern for the thousands of vehicles still on the road vulnerable to frame breakage.moreover, most people driving those vehicles have no idea that their vehicles could break apart at highway speed with potentially catastrophic results.just because a recall ends (often prior to when many who can only afford to buy used vehicles acquire them) doesn't mean that the safety issue has been fully resolved.this remains a serious safety issue that toyota is simply ignoring (they tell me it is no longer their responsibility!!!).i was fortunate to have noticed the breakage while performing routine maintenance on my vehicle.others may not be so fortunate.

The frame on my tacoma has rotted beyond repair, over 6" gaping holes in the main frame near the suspension mounts. The rear leaf springs are bowed over as well! i was never notified of any recalls by toyota. I contacted toyota to have it looked at. They refused at 1stthen aqccepted it at the whitby toyota dealer. The results were that toyota was willing to install an upgraded spare tire carrier & nothing more!

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed something hanging under the vehicle. The contact had an independent mechanic diagnose the vehicle and found severe rust on the rear passenger side along with a fractured frame. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 168,000.

This vehicle has serious rust in the frame, the structural composition of the frame is so bad that the vehicle is no longer safe to drive. In the photo that i attached you can see that the rear left leaf spring has protruded into the frame. I do not believe there is current recall program to replace the frame and i believe this is common issue that needs to be addressed. A 15 year old vehicle should not have structural issues under normal driving conditions and i believe i should be compensated.

This truck is only 11 years old and the frame is rusted out. There is a hole about 12 inches longin the frame rail, on the right side, which caused my shock mount to break in the rear of the truck.i called toyota and they won't do anything about it. I told them i would never buy another toyota.this frame should last longer than 11 years.

Was driving and entering a freeway onramp when the door swung wide open after the latch failure. Had to secure a replacement (used) and found several others with the same problem. It obviously appears to be a common problem due to the latch being constructed from plastic. To me this constitutes a saftey issue.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the frame was corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the failure was a manufacturing defect and offered no assistance. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance either. The failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 85,000.

I called the toyota customer experience hotline to inquire if my truck qualified for a frame rust protection coating or replacement under their 15 year extended warranty that was offered for 2001-2004 tacomas. I was told that my truck was "potentially eligible for frame repair" valid under the warranty until the end of 2017 and a case was opened. I was told i needed to take the truck into an authorized dealership for a frame inspection, and then regional office would make the decision to cover it. I was also informed of a recall on the spare tire carrier that was prone to rust and potential failure. I brought my truck in to the toyota of portland to replace the spare tire carrier and inspect the frame.when i picked up my truck they said it failed the frame inspection due to excessive corrosion and that they never replaced the spare tire carrier because they were worried once they removed the spare tire carrier to replace it would further compromise the integrity of the surrounding area of the rusted frame. Finally the dealership told me that the regional office denied my frame replacement based on the photos they received. Supposedly the regional office said that the rust is only bad on the cross section and that is a removable section of the frame that can be replaced so the frame itself is not did not fail. My complaint is that i have authorized toyota service center paperwork saying my vehicle failed the frame inspection, and based solely on photos, and with one month left of my warranty, the regional office decided to override the diagnosis and denied my warranty claim. The recalled spare tire carrier has still not been replaced, and im worried that once it is it will uncover more corrosion, but by that time my warranty for frame replacement will have expired. I want toyota to honor my warranty and replace the frame on my truck like they are obligated to do.

2003 tacoma frame is eating itself away due to rust corrosion. Toyota's "limited service campaign" ended in 2011, but does nothing to deal with these dangerous vehicles still on the road. Recall!

Rust, corrosion, or other failure or detachment of exterior body and frame components, the vehicle is rotted underneath

I am looking for information regarding the toyota frame corrosion recall. I currently own a 2003 toyota tacoma that falls under this warranty and my frame is completely corroded and now deemed unsafe. Toyota has told me that their recall has expired and therefore my frame is not covered even though we were initially told that the frame was under warranty for 15 years. At the initial time of recall we brought our truck to our local dealer (greentree)for a frame inspection and they advised me the frame was in good condition but there was no process in place yet to spray the frames ...now my frame is completely rotted through and toyota has advised me that there is nothing they can do about it. I would like some info on how this major safety recall can "expire" and want to explore my option for toyota to fix their issue and my truckthank you

Frame rusting from the inside out caused frame of truck to snap in half when lifted with a hydraulic lift at the mechanic's shop

Toyota issued an extended warranty on the frames of this vehicle due to them admitting that they used substandard metal to build the frame, therefore, resulting in accelerated rust and corrosion. I was never notified that this was an issue, and happened to find out from a friend that toyota extended the warranty because of this. I took this frame in for an evaluation on 8/3/16 and it failed the inspection. This vehicle only has 40,000 miles on it and is in great condition other than the frame, which was toyota's fault and they need to be held accountable. The service department at toyota of melbourne in melbourne, florida, told me that they would install a new frame, but i would be responsible for paying for any parts that may be needed to do the installation which will be around $2,500. I think that this issue needs to be a recall because toyota has known about this since 2008, bought back over 800,000 of these trucks, and never notified me that i need to get this frame inspected. I cannot afford to pay that much money for a repair, so i will be driving around with an unsafe vehicle, because toyota refuses to make this a recall. This is their responsibility, and toyota is putting the safety of drivers at risk by forcing them to pay more than the vehicle is worth for the repair. In today's economy, no one who is driving a 2003 vehicle can afford a $2,500 repair on an extended warranty issue! pleas work to force toyota to make this a recall so that no deaths occur when these rotted frames fall off of these trucks while they are being driven!

Driving truck, only 86617 miles, heard drive train noise, pulled over, noticed frame rust through and truck bending down in middle beside the gas tank. Felt unsafe to drive, had vehicle towed to toyota dealership. Arapahoe toyota.

During routine maintenance, my mechanic discovered the frame was completely shot, stating he was not even comfortable working under it!the rest of the truck is in reasonable condition, and it only has 111,000 miles on it.i called toyota customer svc ctr, but they were unwilling to do anything to address the problem.i feel they were obviously aware of the issue, because the agent explained they had a "limited svc campaign" to add corrosion protection, but informed me that it had expired back on 7/31/2014.i was never notified of this campaign.the agent also stated that the vehicle frame was inspected back in 2012 (which happens to be the year i purchased it in, so i assume this was done just prior to my buying it), and passed stating there was "no" rust -- which is false!misled by many and sold faulty equipment that could have endangered or killed me and others, i am very upset and disappointed about this!researching the issue, i see that i am not alone in this, by far.so, basically, we've all thrown away many $1000's and can recover none of it, nor can we drive the vehicle without fearing it will, quite literally, fall apart!

This morning i took my low mileage (58,926) 2003 toyota tacoma to my mechanic for a couple of simple repairs. When road testing, he discovered extensive rust on the drivers side frame. During the spare tire carrier recall two years ago the toyota dealer slapped undercoating on it and said nothing. This dangerously extensive frame rust seems to be a widespread problem. Why hasn't there been a recall? what does it take?

2 months after i bought 03 tacoma double cab w/ only 3000 miles on it i noticed that around the bottom corners of both rear drs and the front bottom corners of the bed all the paint had come off on a fairly small section (but very noticable, even from a distance).the service writer that i was speaking to said their was a problem with the double cabs doing this. At this point the service manager came to us and told me that it was cuased from me not installing running boards on the vehicle. Next he said that he would have to get in contact with the regional manager and discuss it with him and have him take a look at the vehicle. At this time i had a scheduled appointment and all they did was go look at it in the parking lot real quick and no ro was made months went by and i still got no responce when i would call they said they had to wait for the regional manager to make it up here. Again months went by and still nothing. Called and got the same responce. Again months and i called and was told that the rm was going to be their on a certain date and they set me up an appt. But told me i would have to go to their body shop first to get a quote to fix it. I went to the body shop on the day of my appt. And got to deal with the manager himself while they did up the quote to repair the manager was telling me that they had repaired at least a dozen of these same vehicles with the same problem under factory warranty. He had said that due to the body configuration and the placement of the factory mud flaps that debris coming off the front tires wears off the paint causing it to rust and also ruins the fender flares which he later showed me. He also stated that all of these vehicles were doing this. Next i went to the appt. And the rm and service manager went to look at the vehicle and i was told to wait in the sitting area. They came back in about ten minutes later and the rm told me that it was due to enviromental conditions and it would not be covered under warranty.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for service under a nhtsa campaign i.d. 12v542000 (tires) however, the dealer could not remedy the recall due to excessive rust on the frame. The dealer advised that there was a previous recall for an undercoating spray to prevent frame rust. The contact stated that the vehicle received the treatment but it still did not prevent the frame rust, which the dealer stated would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 106,000.

I noticed the rear skid plate is hanging on by only one side about to fall off due to rust on hardware/plate when driving in the highway plate wobbles up and down. It seems like it will fall while driving and cause a possible accident, or injury.

I received a frame recall for our 2005 tacoma but not our 2003 tacoma. I checked with the local toyota dealership and they told me that the recalls for the 2003 have passed but they will replace the frame if i pay $2,900 out of pocket and they will cover the rest. I bought the truck used 18 months ago and did not receive a recall notice. I checked with the previous owner who advised that he did not receive one. I am suspect that this information is wrong and will be checking into it with toyota. The frame is broken at the point where the rear leaf spring rotted to the point of a disconnect from the frame. Carbone toyota inspected it and advised me to have it replaced.

Frame rust.i was just informed that my 2003 tacoma has a serious frame rust problem and is now unsafe to drive.i contacted a toyota dealership and they stated that this case was closed and there was nothing they could do to help.my biggest concern was i had this same truck in the same dealership for a recall on the spare tire holder (rust problem) andthey did not mention or check the frame to see if it was safe.my son was in a small front end collision and the entire frame bent and buckled.how could this vehcile be allowed on the roads.

In may 2014 while having my vehicle serviced by a mechanic he brought to my attention a serious and ongoing issue with the frame of my 2003 toyota tacoma. I am experiencing a serious material defect in the frame of this vehicle. The problem i am experiencing is not normal. I am referring to a complete breakdown of the frame.i contacted toyota in may 2014 to file a formal complaint.toyota informed me that my vehicle was recalled for a defective frame but the recall had expired. I informed toyota that i did not receive a recall from them and requested them to make good on the recall and replace my frame. They again refused my request.on may 22, 2014 i took my tacoma to motor world toyota for a frame inspection. The inspection found perforation on the left rear frame by the leaf spring. The inspection also stated due to frame perforation the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The mechanic that examined our truck stated that they were replacing frames on a large amount of toyota vehicles due to the frame defect.the service manager said he would report his findings to toyota and contact us. A few days later the manager contacted us only to inform us again corporate toyota again refused to replace the frame.in april of this year i again contact corporate toyota(case#1503280111) by phone and email to request them to honor the recall for the defective frame only to be refused again. I am asking for any assistance you can offer us. It is critical to our family for toyota to honor the recall on the frame our truck.my husband uses the vehicle to travel to frequent medical appointments. He has been treated since april 2012 for metastatic malignant melanoma. We have been preoccupied with radiation, chemo, 3 surgeries and frequent appointments for cat scans, pet scans etc. We desperately need this vehicle for continued transportation to his medical appointments.

Frame recall for rust toyota did undercoat the frame and it did not dry for several years now all the undercoat is falling off and the frame is rusting worse than when it originally was worked on i took it back and was told as long as there are no holes they will not fix the rustproofing.

Frame is rotten and broken, shocks ripped off of frame. Unsafe to drive and still need to use daily.

Complete rust with the undercarriage.there was a volunitary recall by toyota but i never received this recall notice. This can be very dangerous because the vehicle can break if half.this is also why there is a recall on the spare tie holder.but can not get the spare tire holder fixed what to they fix it to a rusted undercarriage.i have called and complainted in the past.

There was a recall on my truck for potential frame corrosion. I never received notification of this issue from toyota and didn't know about the problem until my mechanic warned me about frame rot. I brought my truck to a local toyota dealer and they confirmed that there was damage but informed me that i had missed the opportunity deadline for the repair. I have contacted their us corporate office and been given the same reply. They claim to have sent me the recall notice but i maintain that i never received any notification. I am wondering if i have any recourse in this matter.

Extensive frame rust through

We bought a 2003 toyota tacoma in a private sale. Upon inspection the following day we realized there was a large amount of rust and actual holes in the frame.my fianc and i reached out to the previous owner who refused to speak with us.i contacted a local toyota dealer to see if i could obtain service records and i was able to obtain the record where the images of the frame was sent to headquarters for the frame replacement.i called toyota customer service and told them what he happened, they confirmed a frame replacement was approved but the previous owner had issues with the title and it pushed it outside of the warranty extension by the time it was fixed.toyota refuses to honor it, the representative actually said 'you shouldn't have bought a vehicle that was so old'. I was appalled.they offered no aid, no discount.all she said was that we shouldn't drive the vehicle in it's condition.my fianc has no choice and was driving the vehicle on the highway with his nephew when he lost the breaks (due to the rusted dust shield slicing the brake line) and had to swerve off the road to avoid an accident at 65 miles per hour.now he is missing work because we only have one vehicle.i am completely baffled by toyota and their customer service department.we spend all of our savings on this vehicle and they basically told us too bad.

The left door handle has broken from where you grip it when opening the door. The vehicle was stationery when this occurred. The back door does not close completely because the locking mechanism is not working properly.this is also on the left side.this vehicle is a four door pick up truck.

While the vehicle was being serviced for an unrelated reason, the authorized dealer observed that the frame was severely corroded and needed to be replaced. The independent mechanic indicated that the frame and undercarriage had extensive rust and corrosion, which also needed to be repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided no remedy. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires). The contact waited longer than two years for the part. The spare tire carrier was also prematurely rusted and could fracture. The part was unavailable to replace the spare tire carrier. The dealer and the manufacturer were unable to confirm when the recall repair would be completed. The failure mileage was not available. Parts distribution disconnect.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The failure mileage was 134,000.

We bought a 2003 toyota tacoma in 2015 and it apparently had a recall for the frame in 2014 but the previous owner did not get it fixed so we are now stuck with a truck we can't drive and we still owe 14 payments on it.i called toyota and apparently the warranty just expired in april and we've never got a letter about any recalls or warrantys so were stuck with a piece of junk we can't drive.something needs to be done because we can't afford to have it fixed out of pocket.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While driving 35 mph, the rear shocks mounting bracket fractured and separated from the subframe. 552(b)(6).

Emergency brakes needed replacement was told how underside of truck is corroding rusting badly removed my spare tire it was also badly rusting . I am the only owner of vehicle , also own highlander and camry . Both not even close to looking like under what i have with truck ?

The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

My 2003 toyota with currently 77,197 miles was recalled multiple times for frame inspections for excessive rust and corrosion with the first time resulting in toyota applying a corrosion-resistant treatment back on 6/25/2010.unfortunately after inspecting my frame and undercarriage recently i noticed the corrosion and rust getting worse.i had my frame inspected at my dealership back in june of 2013 with the dealer stating the frame was in good condition.i currently restrict my driving to around town because i fear for myself and my families safety.

2003 tacoma. Took the vehicle in to be serviced and the technician pointed out that i have extensive frame corrosion and holes in the frame and that the car is dangerous and will not pass inspection. Car was stationary. Wtf?

When i went to the garage for the yearly inspection, i was informed by the mechanic that the frame on my tacoma was rusted severely with major holes and could not be inspected.i was told that there was a recall on the frame for such issues and that i should call the dealer who sold the truck.being as the dealer was no longer open (retired), i was unable to speak to him.ii called the toyota company, and was told that the recall was no longer in effect and that they could not help me.i asked why i was not informed about this recall as i was the registered owner of the vehicle, i was told that "everyone that owned one should have gotten a notice."i wrote a letter to the toyota company in january 2020 and did not receive a reply.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the entire frame, front bumper, and undercarriage were completely rusted from the front bumper to the rear. Two years prior to the failure, the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer confirmed that there was surface rust on the vehicle. I would also like to note that in 2016 while i was stationed in alaska, i received a postcard about the extended warranty. I promptly called the number and was advised that the warranty did not pertain to my tacoma. Otherwise, i would have put it on the ferry tojuneau for the inspection. Lastly, i have owned this tacoma since 2009. It as been stationed with me for 4 york in fl, 4 york in nj, 4 york in sites, ak and 2 years in me. It alsopreviously lived between in ky and fl prior to me. While at the dealer, the contact inquired about an unknown frame recall. The contact was informed that the recall did not apply to his vehicle. The failure and current mileages were 68,000.

I purchased a 2003 tacoma in april of 2016 from matthews motor company of covington, pa. Fast forward to 12/2017 and the frame now has a couple holes in it near the rear drivers side wheel where the gas tank attaches to the frame. There is a known issue with these trucks for the frames. Contacted toyota to have it addressed only to be told the campaign expired. The truck was inspected in 2011 (before i owned it) under campaign "zth" and no rust perforation was found, and as far as i am aware, an undercoating was applied at this time. I am told however that because the truck was not undercoated / didn't have a corrosion prevention treatment applied under campaign "90d" that it no longer qualifies for coverage under campaign "zth." how can the truck not qualify for the campaign now when it did in 2011? moreover, i have never received any letters about this issue since purchasing the truck, despite the obvious safety issue presented by a potentially faulty frame. I would have to insist that toyota inspect my frame, acknowledge it is perforated from rust from the inside out and follow through with campaign zth, not only for my vehicle but for those in similar circumstance.

I'm trying to sell my tacoma.the frame is rusted.i took it to a toyota dealer when the frame recall was sent to me.they sprayed the frame with a corrosion resistant treatment.obviously, this hasn't solved the problem and i want a new frame.i have 134,000 miles on this truck.it's in great shape except for the frame.my mechanic said it's a safety factor because the spare tire brace is rusted; there are holes in the frame now.according to a letter from toyota usa president, they are allowing replacement frames up to 15 years.

Bought the truck used, frame rusted, from cold weather state, heard lots of trucks did this, rust so bad afraid to drive it,everything else on truck good, from what i understand it's had 5 recalls, not one done by former owner, internet web site said frames were not coated right, factory defect, want toyota to fix issue as it's their fault this has happened, it's dangerous to drive.

After my purchase of a new 2003 toyota tacoma pre-runner i quickly discovered my rear chrome bumper was rusting at the area where the license plate is displayed.i took my new truck to my local toyota dealer and was told that toyota recognized this was a problem but there was no recall issued on the problem and that i could continually use a type of steel wool to keep up with the rust as it was happening.unacceptable.

I own a 2003 toyota tacoma regular cab (2 door) pickup truck that i purchased in december 2002.water leaks into the inside of the truck onto the sealplate from the passenger side door.this occurs when washing the truck or during rain storms, etc. I first noticed this problem in march 2003. I have taken the truck into the local toyota dealer to have it repaired a number of times, and it still leaks.i would like to get this problem resolved.

I am the owner of a 2003 toyota tacoma with approximately 29,000 miles, living in the northeast.the frame and the undercarriage of the vehicle have extensive rust from front to rear.i believe the frame is rusting from the inside out and will continue to do so.at this point, the transmission shield and the fuel tank shield are in danger of falling off of the vehicle.the leaf springs are so corroded that they no longer function properly.the exhaust system and muffler are completely rusted out.

Rust perforation on 1998 to 2004 toyota tacoma frames and undercarriages, the dealer stated was due to improperly manufactured frames.toyota customer care told me that the voluntary frame recall on my 2003 tacoma for frame rust expired in march of 2011 and they would not do anything to correct the problem.the frames of certain year toyota tacoma are defective and were not properly made and are subject to rapid rust perforation.toyota should be required to correct the problem.their voluntary program should be made mandatory.

Synopsis of problem:the frame of the tacoma was fabricated with insufficient corrosion protection, particularly inside the boxed section of frame under the midsection of the truck.the frame is literally rusting from the inside out.what happens is, as the frame rusts on the inside of the boxed section, the rust flakes drop onto the bottom of the boxed section.these rust flakes then plug the weep holes in the frame so that moisture is not allowed to drain out the interior of the boxed section, thereby exacerbating the potential for corrosion.so what is happening is the bottom of the boxed section of frame is rusting out due to the build-up of moisture and the accumulation of rust flakes plugging off the weep holes.the rust flakes are 1/8? deep on the bottom of my boxed section of frame.basically the bottom 20% of tacoma frames are rusting out.what is particularly dangerous about the bottom of the boxed section of frame becoming compromised by corrosion, is the bottom of the boxed section is where the bracket for the rear leaf spring is attached.as the boxed section corrodes, there is less and less material supporting this major suspension bracket.the design of this bracket must be analyzed by your nhtsa independent engineer.i strongly believe that it doesn?t take much frame corrosion to severely compromise the integrity of this welded leaf spring bracket.if this bracket fails, then the front of the leaf spring comes free, the rear axle comes out of alignment, which could cause the operator to lose control.this is a major safety issue!i also can't help but wonder that since the frame is an integral part of the vehicle's safety system, what does a severely corroded and weakened frame do to the level of crash protection offered by the vehicle?if nhtsa?s independent engineer finds that the frame does play a major role in the crash protection offered by the vehicle, then the nhtsa will have no choice but to force toyota to do a recall.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension) and stated that an independent mechanic before the notification of the recall sprayed the undercarriage. The dealer informed the contact that the recall repair would not be honored due to the coating of the undercarriage. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the entire frame was rusted and corroded and may fracture. A lift plate inspection was performed and it was diagnosed that the frame was covered with undercoating and the lift plate was unable to be repaired due to the rust. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 75,880.

Excessive rust has appeared on the frame and underbody components of my 2003 tacoma making me question the structural integrity as it ages.i am concerned for the safety of myself and passengers at highway speeds knowing that proper examination of the metal's strength requires more than just a visual inspection and the use of a hammer.i began noticing excessive rust approximately one year after purchase in january 2004.

2003 toyota tacoma was recalled in april 2010 for frame replacement.the truck failed and the "entire" frame was replaced.july 18, 2011, while driving this truck the spare tire falls out from beneath the vehicle.thankfully i was on a side road going about 35 mph and the other vehicles on the road were able to avoid any impact.the next day i took the plate that was " holding" the spare tire to the toyota service center that replaced the frame.despite the fact that the plate looked like it could have been a piece from the titanic, i was told that this particular part was not part of the tacoma recall.i asked if they had to remove this part while replacing the frame, which they acknowledged they did, and then i asked why they would put a worn piece back on... The response was "it probably didn't look that bad a year ago"....!!! i called the toyota 800 phone number and opened a case.as a result,i have learned that this part was recalled on the 2003 tundra, but not the tacoma... Toyota will however reimburse me the cost $233 if i wish to have the piece replaced.i am disgusted and shocked at the fact that something like this could happen.thankfully no one was injured...however i could not get this very same truck inspected in the state of massachusetts in april of this year until i replaced the catalytic converter ($1600)...yet it is okay to putsafety inspection sticker on a vehicle that is a hazard to others due to a spare tire projectile that could occur at any moment.this is insanity to me.i also have a 1994 toyota which would not pass due to rust on the exterior "bumper"...exterior rust was considered a hazard.. And i had to replace the entire bumper "or remove it" before it would pass. Perhaps the "inspection" requirements should be enhanced to include true life threatening problems...i have never had anyone harm themselves on my rusty bumper....but i nearly took out 4 vehicles with my faulty spare tire mount..

My 2003 toyota tacoma with 105k miles was found during an inspection to have a rusted frame toyota has admitted to the defect and refuses to correct i own and bought new a 2003 toyota tacoma from rockingham toyota in salem, nh. I was just informed by my mechanic on 12/5/2012 that my truck would not pass mass state inspection due to a trouble code (check engine light) and most importantly that my frame was completely rusted through and that my toyota truck was unsafe to drive. I personally verified this by crawling under my toyota truck and poking my fingers through the frame. My toyota tacoma is ready to fold in half due to the extent of frame rust. After contacting toyota in california (phone 800 331 4331) and discussing the safety issue with the assigned case manager [xxx], i was told that there was nothing that could be done to rectify this unsafe condition. I also contacted rockingham toyota in salem, nh. And they would take no responsibility for this unsafe condition. They mentioned that the safety recall "program" had expired. Toyota corporate claims that i received seven recall notices regarding rusted frame issues. I never received any recall or notice from toyota regarding the frame issue.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

We purchased a used tacoma in march 2014. We inspected it very carefully for rust. None was noted. About 2 weeks later my son was changing the oil and noticed that rust was appearing around the holes near the sway bar. Now the holes are getting dangerously large. We probably won't be able to safely drive the truck in a few months. The frame rusts from the inside out so you can't see the problem until it's too late. We have talked to toyota and they are not willing to help because they have no record of it being sprayed even though i have evidence it was at a toyota dealer several times that they don't have. Toyota received a settlement from [xxx] for supplying the defective frames but they aren't willing to fix their defective frames. Some one who doesn't spend much time underneath their truck is going to have a frame break while they're speeding down the highway and get hurt. We are going to be out a lot of money because of this defective frame. Please hold toyota accountable before someone gets hurt.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I live in nc and i noticed the frame of my 2003 toyota tacoma is rusted so bad you can push your fingers through it in some spots! i contacted the local toyota dealership, they ran thevin number on it and told me it no recall is out on the frame. But i have seen on several websites where some 2003 toyota tacoma owners have received either a new frame or been offered by dealerships to purchase the truck back. My question is, this is differently a safety hazard, and for toyota to go by the vin numbers or state in which you live in. And not that it is in "fact" still a toyota tacoma 2003 truck with frame rot, i feel is a "discriminating" or a "discrimination" act on there part.

Rotted frame and never received voluntary notice about this and company is not supporting their voluntary notification explained that i never received it they told me it had expired by 23 days the vehicle is unsafe cannot drive it i only found out about the frame when it went to be inspected and failed . How did toyota get away with selling such an inferior and being allowed to be driven on our roads .i would like to know if your department could help i understand that thousands of other toyota truck owners are in the situation . Sincerely [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*cc

Toyota has blatantly stated they put faulty frames on their 2003 tacomas and as a result of this, the frames would rust because of coating not being put on properly. Toyota even won a lawsuit from the company who made the frames. Now, toyota does not want to make good on the rusted frames on these tacomas. Our frame may not pass inspection due to the rust and if in the event, this frame causes harm to my family, a lawsuit will be filed by me against toyota. After many contacts via email and phone, toyota states that we did not contact them in the time frame they gave regarding the frame problem. Well, you only contact a company about something when the problem is brought to your attention and in our case, was too late. There should not have been a time frame put on this and there should have been a recall done on all these frames. When a person dies from these rusted frames breaking in half while driving, then maybe someone will do something.

2003 toyota tacoma, started to get my truck ready to go to work when i found a hole rusted through the frame right where leaf spring bolts to frame. Front of the leaf spring drivers side. Frame appears to also be cracked in area of rust. I contacted toyota and was told there was a recall for my frame and that the recall was now over and there was nothing they could do for me. I explained that i knew that there was a recall on many of the tacoma frames and i had watched my mail for a recall notice but never received one for my truck. There response was that it was sent and nothing could be done. After talking to toyota i looked on the internet and could find nothing about a recall for my year, i also searched my vin on this site and no frame recall was issued for my vin involving the frame. I am now stuck with a truck i can't drive and have no way to get to work without getting a ride. I have also had problems with clutch wear, sticking parking brake, and electrical problems with the windshield wipers.i also found other stories about people not being contacted for there frames with the same response from toyota, sorry you missed it your out of luck.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while the vehicle was being taken to a dealer for an oil change, the mechanic noticed that there was a rust hole that had rusted through the frame near the right rear passenger's side. During a recent safety inspection severe frame corrosion was found. The garage said that toyota had a frame recall. When i spoke with toyota america they said it had expired because i had not answered the recall notices. Wich inever recieved. I explained that i was the original owner at the same adress as the time of the purchase. They reviewed it again and the next day said they sent the required notification 5 times. But could not tell to what address they were sent .the final answer was i was no longer covered.

Helloi bought a used 2003 toyota tacoma in ma a little over one year ago. Toyota has voluntarily recalled the vehicle due to frame failure. My truck was tested and the frame failed. Toyota says they will honor the recall and replace my frame for free. But, they have no frames. I am told that there is a delay for an undetermined amount of time, and have been warned that it may be many months or longer. How long does toyota have to honor this recall legally before i have some other consumer option, such as vehicle replacement? i feel deceived, since this truck has barely been driven, cost $16,000, and is now useless and sitting in the repair shop indefinitely, with no estimated repair date. Toyota headquarters and the dealer say they "have no further information". How long should i wait indefinitely? do i have any consumer protection in this case?thank you.

The contact mentioned that he was waiting for the parts to become available for the recall repair under nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 214,000 and the current mileage was 218,000.updated 6/10/14

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while having a routine check up at lithia toyota of redding (250 e. Cypress ave, redding, ca 96002, (530) 250-3207) the technician informed him that the spare tire had severe corrosion, as well as the rear subframe. The vehicle was not repaired due to part not being available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the recall had expired. The failure mileage was approximately 450,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

A toyota tacoma pickup was taken to my mechanic for routine maintenance and frame rust was noted.i called toyota and took the car to a local toyota dealership.they replied they could do nothing as the cost of repairing the frame was not worth the value of the car.they instructed me to call toyota directly and have been told i am on my own.there are 96,000 miles on the car and this was the first time rust was noted.we never received any notifications that there were problems as i amnot the original owner.i am stuck with a valueless car with no help from the parent company.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the entire frame rusted. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer issued a voluntary recall related to the structure; however, the recall expired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000. Rusted frame. Will not pass inspection and very dangerous to drive.

Frame rusted/ cracked would not pass state inspection.truck was taken to toyota during the first recall and i was told it passed.did not go back for subsequent recalls to have the frame sprayed.called toyota when the truck failed inspection and was told that because i didn't have the frame sprayed there was nothing they would do for me.the exhaust system outlasted the frame. This is not acceptable.

When i took the vehicle to the dealer to address a recall related to the spare tire support, they told me the vehicle frame was not safe and they would not work on the vehicle. There are numerous perforations in the frame due to excessive rust. I addressed with toyota corporate and the factory representative validated the problem and acknowledged that it has been a problem on these vehicles but that toyota and "the government" did not deem it necessary to put a recall on the problem. Meanwhile, they will not address the issue and indicated it is the customer.s responsibility for repair. The truck (normal blue book value approx $7-8k) is now unsafe to drive due to a faulty frame.

I have a toyota 2003 tacoma the frame is gone rotted so unsafe was told i should not have it on the road!! i cant afford the welding and the guy said he does not want the responsibility it could last 6 months or more he would have to keep checking it!i took it to several toyota dealers they said they could not equally swap any vehicle but yet told me it is unsafe to drive i called california my case was declined i had a mechanic say not to drive this anytime the frame will split in half so close to it i can't work because i need a truck for my job my boss is giving me time but is fed up so who knows will i have a job next week? i lost side job that was paying for my taxes due to no truck.toyotas have has so many issues on this they had the buy back people were still getting money the years they told us werenot mine the buy back stopped in 2011 we know someone got 17,0000 back ! on her old 99 hers was nothing like mine!!!!! there was a rust undercoating we never got the letter !!!!!!!!!!!! as a christian after telling them that i now got a letter that says the spare tire lift plate yup rusted but i can't drive it to them cant use the spare tire rusted out rim i am ready to have a nervous breakdown i have tried everything i was turned down from my case in california headquarters called again today i will hear back in a day no one can believe this i am ready to call the news my wife was supposed to today but had me fill this outwhy who knows i think at this point it needs to go public monday night on facebook toyota usa my wife put up a story and pics as people wrote they kept removing the post !!!!!! they did not want those pics out there saw a complaint on a 2006 about the same issue what happened to toyota? i refuse to drive a deathtrap my grandson went with me in that truck on saturdays .[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated while changing the oil, he noticed that the undercarriage of the vehicle was rusted which resulted in the sub-frame being compromised. The vehicle was diagnosed but not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of failure of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

I own a 2003 toyota tacoma. The entire frame, front bumper, and undercarriage is completely rusted from the front bumper to the rear. In september of 2010 , the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer confirmed that there was surface rust on the vehicle. As a repair, the dealer applied an anti-rust coating onto the frame to prevent further damage (cosmetic cover up).i was told by my mechanic when i went to get a recent oil change on 07/25/13the repair did not prevent the frame from becoming completely rustedand he stated that it was not safe because even the seams were shoeing signs of possible failure. Brought vehicle back to dealership and after inspection was told that frame is safe by toyota standards the vehicle was not repaired. The original mileage when brought in for initial recall was 24794, but and the current mileage is 29,820

Brought truck into body shop in june 2019 to have work done.they told me the frame on the truckwas severely rustedin several places. They said it may be unsafe to drive.in 2016 (about 2.5 yrs ago) i brought the truck into the local toyota dealer to have frame inspected under a recall notice.at that time they told me that the frame was ok. In addition the truck was at the dealer in 2018 for another recall for leaf springs.at this time they replaced leaf springs but did not report any problems with frame rust.the original body shop and my local car repair shop told me that the severity of the rust damage on the truck indicated that this has been going on a long time and were surprised that it had passed toyota dealer frame inspection. I called toyota national line and they told me that for frame replacements for my truck the program endedin january 31 2019.subsequently i tried to work with the local dealer and they have also told me that national toyota will not help. Clearly the severity of the problem (see attached photos) indicates that the rust damage was happening over a long period of time and toyota was negligent in reporting this to me. Toyota should take responsibility for repairing/replacing the frame since clearly the problem has existed long before the january 31 2019 date and i have followed up on all the recall notices for this truck.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while turning at 10 mph, the contact lost control of the steering wheel as the front driver's side dropped to the ground. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic where the front suspension lower ball joint was found to be separated, causing the front suspension to fail. The manufacturer advised the contact that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number 05v225000 (suspension). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 175,640.

The frame is rotted and was never addressed to be fixed

Frame recall for rust toyota did undercoat the frame and it did not dry for several years now all the undercoat is falling off and the frame is rusting worse than when it originally was worked on i took it back and was told as long as there are no holes they will not fix the rustproofing.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While driving at 60 mph, the rear end of the vehicle veered to the passenger side while the contact was steering the vehicle straight. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the shock absorber was not attached to the truck. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 123,000.

Frame is rotten and broken, shocks ripped off of frame. Unsafe to drive and still need to use daily.

I was driving down the road goimg about 35 mph heard a loud noise. Lost all control of the steering wheel and my tire had broken off from the ball joint. The place fixing it said the other side is about to break as well. This is very dangerous and i could have been killed.

While traveling at about 40 mph, right front passenger wheel suddenly and unexpectedly broke off at the ball joints.the tire folded under the chassis and the truck skidded to a stop in the road shoulder.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated thatwhile attempting to enter a parking space, the front driver's side wheel collapsed to the ground. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that the ball joint was split. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension: ball joint) and was told by the manufacturer that the vehicle was not included in the recall campaign. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 180,000.updated 06/10/13

Frame corrosion, took tacoma in for inspection while still under warranty, frame failed inspection but toyota denied claim due to outside influences.

We bought our 2003 tacoma brand new from the dealer in 2003, expecting this to be a 30-year investment.we have kept up all maintenance on this truck with our mechanic.he checked it last year and found no issues with the frame other than some normal rust.last week we took it to him because the check engine indicator was on, and he discovered that our frame was completely rusted through with holes in the driver's side.he deemed it completely unsafe to drive and recommended that it be towed to the dealer because the frame was near the point of breaking in half.we never received any notices from toyota.we performed all recalls they issued.after an online search, we discovered the extent of this frame rot problem over many toyota trucks.when we called toyota corporate, they dismissed us and told us that we were out of luck receiving any help or compensation for this defect because we had missed deadlines on a class action suit and also that there was an extended warranty issued only for some tacomas in certain cold weather states. We were never notified of any of this information and have lived at this same address with the same contact information since the time of purchase. We went to the dealership where we purchased it and they also completely dismissed us, telling us that it was out of their hands and we could try to contact corporate to join all the other truck owners with this frame rot problem and try to see if they might help us. This truck has only 37,479 miles.as much as i'm devastated that we are now out many thousands of dollars because of toyota's unscrupulous policies, i'm more angry that they knowingly have put millions of lives in jeopardy by covering up this dangerous problem.how many more vehicles are currently on the roads every day with the risk of ripping in half and killing innocent people?this problem must be fixed please!

Was driving down the road and the frame broke completely in half on the drivers side an caused the drive shaft to fall out and when it did it bounced up and knocked a hole in the gas tank causing me to wreck.and the bed of the truck has huge holes rusted through them.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While the vehicle was coasting into a fuel station, the front passenger side ball joint detached from the tire independently and without an impact. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and later towed to toyota of whittier (located at 14577 e, whittier blvd, whittier, ca 90605, (562) 222-5386). The dealer diagnosed that the ball joint became loose and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was repaired pernhtsa campaign number: 05v225000 (suspension) in 2005. The manufacturer provided case number: 1902250627. The contact stated that the recall repair failed. The approximate failure mileage was 230,000.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle veered to the right without warning. The failure mileage was unknown.

I purchased this 2003 toyota tacoma 4 dr a few months agoi've been a toyota owner for more than 6 yrs as my previous trk was also a tacomathe body on this trk was spotless, no rust anywhere, the frame had surface rust but it didn't look too badthe trk needed tires & a bulb for safety. I felt like i had gotten lucky to get a nice dependable trk on the road. Within a month i noticed the trk was riding rougher. It seemed to be getting worse everyday. Tacoma doesn't have good suspension in the 1st place as i had to do it twice on my last trk. The trk had snow build up from the cold winter we were having, so i took it to the car wash to clean it up before putting `it in the shop. While washing it i noticed some scale rust came off under the drivers floor, i pulled it into the shop over the hoist & while setting the lift arms i noticed a substantial hole in my frame. I lifted the trk to find a piece of the frame starting at the lt front sway bar mount had rotted around the welded seam & disintegrated.the hole was15" long & another 8" hole on the rt rear in frt of the spring shackle. Toyota says they will replace the spare tire hanger under warranty but the frame is my issue as i did not have the frame inspected back in 2010 to extend the warr. Until 2017. I did not own the trk until 2014. Toyota is trying to hide behind a technicality that does not apply to the new owner. I feel toyota should be held responsible for the excessive rust issue as they are well aware of the problem. They have had to re-call over 160.000 units because of the fact they failed to use adequate rust protection in the 1st place. This trk & many other toyota trks on the road are a potential death trap. The world needs to be informed of toyota not backing their warr. & trying to keep the hush hush on their recall for rust perforation. Toyota created the problem, toyota needs to fix the problem.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the axle, power steering lines and oil pan was severely rusted. The corrosion was so severe that it caused a fracture on the power steering line. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer to be repaired. The dealer replaced the frame and advised the contact that the failure was caused by environmental factors. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacture was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. The current mileage was 118,000.

Frame has rusted thru by the leaf spring and other places.toyota has a recall/campaing that covers the frame thru 2018.but they will not replaced frame because they said it was not undercoated during a specific time....they want $10,000 for new frame.. This is a known problem that should be fully recall.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While driving 45 mph, the vehicle inadvertently turned left and crashed into an embankment. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front suspension ball joint fractured and needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. A police report was filed. The contact sustained minor injuries that required medical attention. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The contact stated that she had not received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 05v225000 (suspension). The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was recently serviced by a mechanic who indicated that the vehicle would not pass inspection due to extensive rust and corrosion of the frame. The vehicle was not included in any recalls for the frame. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available. Consumer contacted the dealer on 12/17/18 representative stated notifcation was mailed w/o a response.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While driving various speeds, a popping noise was present from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who discovered that the rear driver's side spring hanger was rusted and detached from the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 146,000 .. Consumer stated while searching that toyota was aware that the frame was susceptable to corrision and there was a recall/ reeplacement program but has expired.

Frame is rusting.

In january 2006, i received a recall notice from toyota re: ball joints on our 2003 tacoma.

Own a 2003 toyota tacoma.received toyota recall letter regarding frame corrosion rust issue in 2009.brought tacoma to jafferian toyota dealership in haverhill, maon 6/20/09 where they inspected tacoma and said it passed frame inspection.brought truck to local mechanic for routine check who said that the back end of the frame was totally corroded by rust and unsafe to drive.called jafferian toyota who wepurchased truck from and asked if they could repair the frame and they said that they could not because we didn't get the truck sprayed for rust.apparently toyota sent out a second recall letter to dealers and owners that they should get trucks sprayed for rust which we never received. We also contacted toyota usa's customer service department and spoke to the "recall team" and asked if there was anything they could do since we didn't receive the second letter regarding spraying for rust and they said no.

We bought a toyota tacoma off a used car lot unaware of the previous recall on the truck. We are now stuck with a undriveable vehical that is rusted through to the frame. It is in are yard. We still owe 10.000 for it and being forced to pay insurance for a vehical im not even able to use.

Frame of truck is rotting away.contacted toyota about issue and they stated that they had a program that ended in 2011 that addressed that issue.has end date because it was not a recall but a suggestion by toyota.i would think that since the frame rotting away that would be a total recall due to safety hazards. Toyota has admitted to faulty frames by having the program but now will not address the problem

Frame is rusted and gas tank strap broke off. Was told by toyota there was recall for this but expired 2011. How can i get this fixed? this is my only vehicle. It was my late husband's until his death in april 2017.

Issue with etcs throttle body.got code "p2112 throttle actuator 'a' stuck closed" after replacing the air/fuel ratio oxygen sensor (sensor 1 bank 1) and cleaning throttle body bore.replaced new oxygen sensor with old sensor and low idle/stalling issue was not corrected.

Rusting of the frame to the point of making the vehicle unsafe. This was discovered during the 150,000 mile service.

Once you fasten the seat belt, it tightens with any movent and restrains the body to the point that disables movement or even breathing. This is very unsafe.

Frame has rusted thru by the leaf spring and other places.toyota has a recall/campaing that covers the frame thru 2018.but they will not replaced frame because they said it was not undercoated during a specific time....they want $10,000 for new frame.. This is a known problem that should be fully recall.

Spare tire carrier part #04002-11104 has been recalled because of rust on the lift plate (campaign #12v54200). The lift cable (which attaches to the lift plate) is corroded and approximately half of the strands of the cable are broken, making it dangerous to attach the spare tire to it. Should this be included in a recall?

Frame rails, left and right side, exhibiting rust thru.safety issue; frame failure in future.(very near).

I took my tacoma for state inspection and they could not lift it because the frame has a hole through it at the front mounting point of the rear spring on the drivers side. The mechanic told me hitting a sever bump or a pothole could snap the frame in half. I have owned the truck for almost 10 years and never received a recall notice aboutthe frame, only on the spare tire carrier. I'm not a computer expert and don't know how to add a picture of the frame to this document. I do know that i need the truck but i am unable to get it inspected to do so. Please help.

My truck had a recall that expired oct 2017 but i didn't find out about it till recent while doing some repairs the frame from the cab back is completely rotted away to the point that it is unsafe to drive so now i have a vehicle that is in exceptional shape but cant fix or sell i think that a deadline on safety is wrong and i should be compensated what the truck is worth

I have a 2003, toyotatacoma, v6, 4x4, trd package. I was driving down the freeway and every now and then it is like i took my foot off the gas but i didn't! if i step on it, it is fine. The problem: is throttle by wire throttle bodieson 03 and 04 tacomas. The accelerator petal position sensor assembly has a shaft onto which the lever for the accelerator cable is mounted with some return springs. This shaft also turns the potentiometer. This lever (a plastic piece) limits the travel of the assembly, so the highest and lowest resistances of the potentiometer are not encountered in the potentiometer.the problem is that the potentiometer can also turn in the assembly, loosing its reference to the arm and lever. Then the range of resistance that is possible can be changed. If it turns too far one way, the higher resistance will be such that there is not sufficient voltage sent to the ecu to indicate that the pedal has been depressed. Conversely, there is a point at the other end of the petitioner where the full voltage is applied and the ecu sees this as a failure and closes the throttle by releasing the throttle control motor's clutch.nothing has been to done to solve this issue with toyota or dealership. Mechanic can not replicated problem. Suggested i replace brand new throttle body which is about $600

While replacing some parts of the truck (2003 toyota tacoma), the exhaust and shocks, i noticed rust holes on the left and right sides of the frame near the rear tires.also the right side of the rear cross member was rusted and broken. The following day, i brought the truck to a toyota dealership and explained the situation.they agreed to inspect the frame.when they looked up the vehicles vin, they noticed that the warrantee had expired in september of 2011.i had purchased the truck in february of 2011 and had by no means received a letter or any means to communicate to me that this warrantee was going to expire.the notice that i had not received would have encouraged the previous owners to bring the vehicle to a dealer to have the frame inspected/ serviced.despite this, the dealership was kind enough to take pictures of the frame holes and send a claim to toyota.a week later, the dealer called me and informed me that my claim was denied.upon further research, i came to understand that toyota had extended the warrantee for up to 15 years.however, because i had not received any notifications from toyota in the 7 months that i owned the vehicle before this "warrantee" had expired, toyota said, "sorry, there is nothing that we can do".really?so because of their design flaws, and the fact that i did not receive any notices, and now my trucks frame is rotting, it is my fault?what address did they actually have on file in 2011?why did i not receive any notice?

Engine warning light came on while driving early morning 9/7/18. Returned home and called local mechanic, supreme automotive. Made an appointment and took the truck in to have the problem diagnosed. Called later to tell me frame rust was too bad to remove certain bolts to test exhaust sensors. Unable to calculate a repair estimate.since i had some experience with a 1999 tacoma that had extensive frame rust, which toyota recalled and eventually bought back, i decided to call toyota before anything else.i was told by toyota that the original owner of my tacoma had responded to a 2009 corrosion recall notice. The undercarriage had been treated. I bought the truck from fox toyota in spring 2011 after my 1999 was deemed unsafe. None of the service records for the 2003 indicated either the recall or the treatment.i was also told that the so-called subsequent recall, of which i was never informed, expired 6/13/18. Notification supposedly should have reached me through the california dmv, even though the truck originated in michigan. Had i received notice i would have responded immediately, as i had with the 1999 tacoma.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the hook that held the floor mat in place loosened and caused the floor mat to become stuck under the accelerator and brake pedals. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle while driving 20 mph in the rain. The contact took the vehicle to an authorized dealer who had previously replaced the hook. The dealer did not have any record of the previous repair and stated the the contact would be responsible for the costs of a replacement hook. The floor mat had not been removed. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.updated 03/03/11 updated 03/07/11

Vehicle has a history of problems that the dealer cannot determine the causes.vehicle does not properly shift into gear, has a rough idle, anda knocking noise in the engine.dealer could not duplicate the problems because they wereintermittent.

At any time, my 2003 toyota double cab 4x4 tacoma pickup truck will lose all power as if i have removed my foot from the accelerator pedal when in fact i have not.this will cause my truck to drastically decrease speed until i pump the gas pedal until it decides to work again and pick up speed again.i have done much research on this issue and have found that the cause is a faulty "drive by wire" throttle body which is causing this.the throttle body on these trucks are computer controlled.you can only open the throttle body butterfly the first 25% with the pedal then the computer opens it the rest of the way.these throttle by wire throttle bodies are crapping out left and right and toyota is trying not to replace them under the power train warranty.they are claiming it is covered under the 3/30 bumper to bumper warranty and not the 5/60 powertrain warranty.i feel that this is a safety issue and needs to be addressed as it causes me to loose control over the vehicle and it is putting myself, passengers and others on the road in danger.what if this happens if i pull out in front of a dump truck?what if it happens when i am crossing a train track?? i think it is a serious loss of control issue and it should be a recall item pure and simple.

- the contact purchased on 07/29/03 a 2003 toyota tacoma four door dbl cab.the first failure occurred on 4/25/04 while slowly pulling into a parking place with and lightly accelerating, the engine revved so fast the truck drove over the parking strip and crashed into a pillar on the sidewalk, causing $5000.00 worth of damage to truck, and$6000.00 damage to the pillar. During the second occurrence on 10/09/06 vehicle stopped at a red light andthe engine accelerated so thecontactput it in to neutral and engine revved faster. The driver then shifted the vehicle back into drive and engine returned to normal in a couple seconds. During third occurrence on 02/05/07whilestopping at a red lighttheengine revved and went back to normal beforethe contact5could turn off the key. If there had been a car in front of thecontact's vehicle it would have caused a crash. The first two times the contact took the truck to the dealer.each time they could not find anything, and gently suggested that maybe the acceleratorandbrakes were both engaged at the same time. First time the contact's foot was on the accelerator, and the other times it was only on the brakes, that was the first thing the contact checked. The service manageradvised her not to drivethis vehicleso she rented a vehicle for a couple days. They had someone from toyota come to check it out, but they could not find anything wrong.

I bought this truck brand new in march 2003 and have had many problems, but nothing you don't expect with vehicles today or anything toyota did not eventually fix, until now.about a year ago while driving down the road at about 45 the truck just lost power and stalled on me.i was almost not able to get it off the road and of course the person behind me almost rear ended me and was highly agitated i had stopped in the middle of traffic and appeared to be driving like a teenager learing to drive a manual shift transmission.when i took it to the dealer i was told it was a bad maf sensor which was replaced along with other items which cost $400.this did not fix it and after much trial and error and research i have found it was the throttle body and one of it's sensors that can't be replaced.when i mentioned this to toyota, they disagreed and said this was impossible.it is funny how many complaints are here and how many more are having this issue who don't even know to file a complaint here.my local toyota specialist (not the dealership), who i trust and has spent a week with my truck driving it and testing it and still only charged me $80, has also confirmed the problem, a bad sensor and the only fix is to completely replace the throttle body assembly at a cost of about $1,000 or so depending on availablity of parts.this is an obvious problem with the 2003 and 2004 models only and have heard claims from toyota mechanics "off the record" that toyota knows about the problem and refuses to acknowledge it.it has come to the point that i don't let anyone in my family drive this truck but me, it is too dangerous.my kids don't ride in it with me either because it could stall as i am trying to cross traffic and the results could be deadly.please, please do something about this, i am going to have to spend the money because i can't wait to fix this, but maybe, just maybe you can save others the money and possibly their familes lives!

My toyota tacoma pre runner 2003, throttle position sensor failed on the freeway and i could not accelerate. Almost crashed because traffic was really going fast and i had no throttle response . I put the truck in neutral and i put my emergency lights on and rolled to the nearest of ramp. If it wasn't for my years of experience driving, this would not have been so easy. This is very common but the repairs are not. 1500 dollars at the dealership. There are several cases of this occurring if you go to toyota forum you will see this is not a unique situation.this started when i first got the truck in august 2009 but who knows if the previous owner new about the problem. I think she did.i cannot fix it because they only sale the entire throttle body which cost 1200 dollars plus labor 160 dollars. Almost 1500 dollars.

Throttle body sensor went bad, and in turn, caused the truck to lose about 90% of its throttle.it happened to me several times in high traffic, causing me to lose almost all power ,and cars behind me to slam on there brakes.

First instance 4/25/04slowly pulling into a parking place with a light touch on the accelerator, the engine revved so fast the truck cleared the parking strip and crashed into a pillar on the sidewalk (picture available) $5000.00 damage to truck & $6000.00 damage to the pillar.second instance 10/09/06stopped at a red light.engine revved up, put it in neutral & engine revved faster.shifted back into drive and engine returned to normal in a couple seconds.third instance 02/05/07just stopped at a red light.engine revved up and went back to normal before i could turn off the key.if there had been a car in front of me i would have crashed.first two times i took the truck to the dealer.each time they could not find anything and gently mentioned that maybe the accelerator & brake were both engaged at the same time. I was the number 3 vehicle at a red light.first car went through (thinking the light had changed).second car moved into first place.i started to follow and when i realized he had stopped i applied my brakes.i could feel the truck lurch even though i was still pressing the brakes as hard as possible. I slammed into him and caused damage to both vehicles.my foot was not on the gas pedal at all.

2003 toyota tacomaconsumer states unintended acceleration.*tgwthe consumer stated the sudden acceleration only happened at low speeds. Updated 06/08/10.

There is a serious hazard with the throttle body where hitting the gas pedal when accelerating will sometimes cause the truck to act as though you took your foot off the pedal - turning left with oncoming traffic almost caused an accident when the truck did not accelerate as you would expect when pressing the gas pedal. I had my mechanic try to diagnose theproblem before looking up the symptoms online, and he traced it to the actuator in the electronic throttle body system. Researching online after discovering this, it seems there is a major issue with the 2003/2004 trucks with this electronic throttle control system hybrid. This is extremely dangerous and i would have thought this would have been recalled based on the known issues with toyota's throttle control systems in the past. The system does not throw a check engine light code when this happens.

Intermidiot loss of throttle responce, from standing at light or stop sign and from acceleration. Hesitation during acceleration until pedel is pressed fully and ossulation while driving at asteady speed on hwy. **no warning codes present**

As soon as the consumer started the vehicle the rpm's revved extremely high and the vehicle lunged forward.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the throttle actuator control motor three times in as many days.the manufacturer will be informed of the problem.

Loss of accelerator due to bad throttle position sensor/throttle body. When you ease off the accelerator the vehicle will lose all throttle response. Then you have to "work" the accelerator in and out until it starts responding again. It happens on take off or anytime you back off on the accelerator. It has cut off on me trying to pull out into traffic and i almost got hit! it has happened on the interstate and i had to try to work my way over with no throttle and try not to get run over! it now happens every time i drive it. Toyota doesn't sell a new tps for this vehicle now ( a $40 to $50 part)toyota will be happy to sell me a new throttle body for $1400 and that doesn't include labor. I thought manufacturers were required to provide parts for their vehicles.

I own a 2003 toyota tacoma pick up truck. I've heard about the recall from a friend who was concerned about my truck. The gas pedal is sticky and consistently hollow. The recall just gave me a confirmation why it's like that. Please help in adding 2003 on the recall list as well

Faulty apps (accelerator pedal position sensor). Vehicle is designed with a combination of mechanical and drive by wire throttle body. When accelerating from a stopped position accelerator pedal is depressed with no response to engine or vehicle movement. This poses a safety threat if driver is in a life or death situation and cannot move vehicle out of harms way.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle shifted as the spare tire became detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires) and stated that the dealer informed her that her vin was not included in the recall campaign. The approximate failure mileage was 46,000.

The contact owns a 2003 toyota tacoma. While driving approximately 20 to 25 mph and exiting a ramp, the rear of the vehicle swayed to the left, then back to the right, and turned 360 degrees. The back end of the vehicle bobbled, flipped over, crashed into trees, and landed on the driver side. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed and injuries were sustained that required medical attention. The rear driver side tire was flat. The tire was replaced and the vehicle was driven home and parked. The vin was invalid. The approximate failure mileage was 158,000.

Driver replacedfront driver's sidetire .threestuds broke while checking the wheel due to corrosion. Dealership was aware of the problem.

In the month of june i took my truck into a reputable service center for our states required state safty inspection. During this inspection the tires must be removed for the brake inspection. While the inspecter was placing the tires back onto the truck, two of the wheel studs broke on the front hub. He brought them in to show me the problem and stated that this happens on almost every 2000 - 2003 toyota pickup they work on. He even showed me that the stud wasn't cross threaded and removed the stud from the lug nut using a pair of pliers. The stud came right out with little pressure. The studs were replaced with new studs from a locale auto parts store. The old studs were thrown in the trash.
