There was extensive damage to the front left side of the vehicle from a collision. The radiator was pushed against the engine. Most of the driver side fender as well as the inner core support was crushed. Both airbags didn't not deploy.

Airbag light on, driving.

I approached an intersection when a on coming car made a left turn in to my car. We collided head on in the middle of the intersection. Neither one of the air bags worked.i'm working for an auto supply shop and this is my delivery truck so i can't answer all the questions about the vehicle.*la

Dear [xxx], i sincerely appreciate your email but i am completely satisfied with my 2002 toyota tacoma pick up truck at the moment with 134,000 miles as of today. The problem lies with the ?defective air bags and defective computer air bag.? over a year ago, this was accessed from haley located off rt 288 and the air bag light was coming on at that time. I paid for a diagnostic testing and it should have been resolved then, not to reoccur a year later. In any case, if a toyota vehicle has defective parts such as the air bag and its computer that is the responsibility of the manufacturer to replace the part and absorb the labor and costs involved to do so not at the expense of the client.the client did not cause the problem, it is a defect in the manufacturing of the vehicle. The problem i am now facing is that haley toyota wants me to absorb this cost of parts and labor to thetune of $711.00 for a defective air bag. I have not been in contact with an attorney specializing in auto injury, but with some research and taking with a friend of mine who is a lawyer; he highly suggests thatunless toyotareplaces the parts and labor at their expense that i should proceed with hiring an attorney and explain what is going on with the air bag and what haley has said.for haley to dismiss this defective part and say that they cannot be responsible is in itself an ?egregious? remark for which they can be liable for if something were to happen while the passenger is driving the car/truck in questioned.infact, they should never have allowed me to leave the premise this past friday knowing all of this, because if a major accident were to happen they would be totally responsible as well as toyota itself. Thank you. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owned a 2002 toyota tacoma. While driving 35 mph, the contact's vehicle collided with another vehicle and then left the road and collided with a tree. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed and deemed destroyed. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 336,000. The vin was unavailable.

Dt: the contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. He states that on march 20, 2005 he hit a telephone pole head on when his steering locked up and the air bags did not deploy.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. While driving 35 mph, the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 205,000.

Hit a deer at approximately 45 mph. Destroyed from center of grill to the right front fender. Two more inches and the radiator would have been included. No air bag deployed. Seat belts prevented any serious injury. Had only sore muscles.

I lost control of my truck when the driver front tire deflated.this occurred as i was taking an off ramp on to another freeway.this caused me to bounce off the hollow tubes in front of the concert divider.my 2002 toyota tacoma will require over $8k to repair.the driver and passenger airbags never deployed in my single cab truck.the damage taken was on the front driver fender/bumper (i have pictures) clearly the airbags should have deployed but failed.this caused me to slam into the steering wheel upon impact.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated while driving at an unknown speed the accelerated pedal became stuck, the brake pedal was applied but travelled to the floor, as the vehicle crashed into a metal mail box.additionally, while applying the brake pedal the instrument panel went dim when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact stated that he replaced all the bulbs. The air bags deployed. The contact stated that when the air bags deployed he saw a glowing light as a fire was ignited. The contact sustained injuries from the fumes and fire exerted from the driver's and passenger side air bags that burnt his nostrils and forehead. The contact did not seek medical attention.a police report was filed. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was towed to an independent lot. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 140,000.

Airbag system failurebroken leaf springs.

Airbags failed to deploy during frontal impact with embankment at speed in access of 40 mph.vehicle left the roadway, traveling straight, under hard breaking conditions and struck an embankment. Upon hitting the embankment, the truck became airborne and made impact with a telephone pole, before landing on its wheels.

Dt*:the contact stated the frontal airbag sensors pick up radio transmitters.the dealership determined the airbags have a global positioning sensor and a secret surveillance device, which caused the radio transmissions.the manufacturer has been alerted.

I was involved in a accident on the freeway, i was stopped in traffic when i was hit from behind and forced into the vehicle in front of me, there was alot of damage done to my vehicle and the other vehicles involved. I have concerns about my air bags not deploying. I was hit in the are maked in my owners manual that informs you as to where the area would have to be hit for them to deploy, i was also trveling at a speed that would have been sufficent for them to deploy .i recieved minor injuries, just a lot of brusies and muscle strains, but none the less if it had been a more sevire accident it would be nice to know that the air bags are funcitional.

My mother was recently involved in a car wreck where she was hit on the drivers side. She was driving a 2002 toyota tacoma and the drivers side airbag did not deploy. She was seriously injured in the wreck. I would like to know what can we do about this.

Topic:"drivers-side airbag failure.nfortunately, i was in an accident, which i was cited.fortunately, no one was seriously injured.i impacted the rear of a stattionary car at approx. 50mphand my airbag failed to deploy.i thank the lord nobody was hurt.but, what if someone was injured, the manufacturer would clearly be liable.i contacted the manufacturer about the incident.thier representative reported the sensors were not triggered, therefore, the air bag did not deploy.i feel this is an insufficient explaination and i need further information.

Airbag warning light has been flashing for about 6 months .this is a 2002 tacoma extended cab pick-up truck with 56k miles.dealer says $200.00 to diagnose.costs to remedy airbag problem could be as much as $500.00 to $600.00, perhaps more.dealer states airbag will not deploy but is not sure of what is really the problem until the diagnosis is completed.my question is;why this problem with a truck with low mileage and taken to dealer since new for all required maintenance.

While traveling 60 mph at night, the driver didn't judge the distance of traffic due to improper sign illustrations by road company.driver had impact of left front which neither air bag deployed.the truck has been totaled from the insurance company due to the extent of damage.the driver received facial, hand, neck and back injurys.please describe details

Was driving on the highway when the truck engine began to thump.towed truck to toyota dealership where the first day they said internal engine failure, the next day they said engine oil pump failure.the oil light indicator never came on before and after the incident.i had an oil change from another toyota dealership on november 30th.

I own an "02" toyota tacoma that was built and sent to me in that same year. The problem that i have experienced is that the a/c went out. I rarely use the a/c in the summer time, but i do get a lot of use out of the heater in the winter. The problem was not noticeable until i had the vehicle for approximately four years. I began to smell a burning smell. Once smoke actually came out of the vents. Eventually the fuse burnt. I replaced it and the a/c worked for a short while then the fuse burned again. I began using the a/c to attempt to determine the problem with the a/c. It recently stopped completely and i can hear the fan ticking as it rotates. This is obviously a manufacturer defect and i did nothing to aggravate this situation. I have and continue to have problems with the drivers' side shoulder harness. I can't move freely once it's locked in. It catches and keeps me from moving freely. I just locks me down and i can't reach for any controls until it eventually releases me so i can move. It seems that all of this occurred at different intervals. I never expected such poor quality of workmanship from such a trusted automobile manufacturer. Had i known or had any idea that this would eventually result in no a/c, i would have taken it in during the warranty period. Now i have no a/c and am not financially prepared to pay the cost involved in repairing it. I will think twice before i even consider purchasing another toyota product. I also had one of my tailgate wire rope supports just corrode and break. How this happened i don't know. It is insulated with a thick plastic, the entire length. This is pending as is the a/c. I went to the toyota product for the quality and ended up regretting that i thought that toyota was a marque for quality.

Dt*: the contact stated the dashboard gauges and lights performintermittently.the dealer can not duplicate the problem.

Consumerhad just bought vehicle and drove home, parked vehicle and cut engine off .vehicle busted into flames.contacted dealer, and dealer stated thatwhen consumer gets fire departmentreport tocall back.please add vin.

Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle'swiring, and fuses are defective.the fuses were wired in a random format that made them inoperable. This defect created an atmosphere which severely limited one's ability to perform maintenance to the electrical system.wiring diagrams were requested from both the manufacturer and the dealer however they refused to provide them.

When engine (cold) first started, there is engine (piston slap/rattle) noise.such continues for approx. One full minute and then sounds normal.such noise is very expensive to repair, complete engine overhaul and should certainly not be occurring in vehicle with only 50,000 miles.truck was very carefully broken in when new and all appropriate oil changes at toyota recommended times...or even sooner.

Frame failure due to corrosion: toyota had placed a "warranty enhancement" to replace the frames because they weren't treated for corrosion but with an enhancement, it expires and did so in 2017.i just bought the truck and learned they have a safety recall for corrosion of the spare wheel compartment.this is the same issue.why is the frame not a safety recall??i have huge holes and large cracks along much of the frame and my mechanic tells me it's unsafe to drive.my fingers go through the side of the frame!my mechanic tells me based on the location of the corrosion in the front of the truck, the entire engine is in danger of falling out!! looking on the internet, this is a huge safety issue for toyota trucks for 2002 and beyond.for many years this hasn't been addressed.the gov needs to demand a safety recall for this truck and all the others affected.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the steering wheel suddenly malfunctioned and caused the vehicle to become uncontrollable. The contact discovered that during the incident the steering rack had fractured. The vehicle was repaired by the contact. In a second incident the contact indicated that while driving the engine suddenly malfunctioned and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that 2 pistons had come through the engine block. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 129,000.

I bought this new and in early 2007 the vehicle started acting as if it wasn't getting gas around 40-45 mph. I was thinking maybe a transmission problem or fuel filter was clogged. A couple of weeks later, i took it to a friend(a retired mechanic). He changed the fuel filter, transmission filter and fuel also. Started up my truck, went inside his home to wash his hands and upon returning outside, the engine oil was pouring from underneath. My truck somehow threw a rod at 82,000 miles and warranty just expired.

The 2002 toyota tacoma prerunner was running great with only 54,000 miles. All oil changes and tune-ups were up to date. Without making any unusual sounds, i experienced a loud thump, lots of smoke and the truck rolled to a stop. Upon checking, lots of oil was leaking out of bottom of the car and pieces were hanging out of the bottom of the engine which turned out to be parts of a thrown rod.thank god my young nephew was not in the auto as there was lots of smoke.

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning, the check engine light appeared on the dashboard, and shortly after vehicle shut down.the consumer heard that this was a common problem. *scc

When using the jack handle to lower the spare tire, it get lodged in the slots.the hooked shape renders it imposible to remove easily making tire changing very dangerous.the simple fix is to provide a second incert to be used to lower the tire.this would not have a hooked end thus avoiding getting hung up on the shield around the lowering slot nut.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact noticed that the frame underneath the vehicle was severely corroded. In addition, the headlights failed to illuminate and the bulbs had to constantly be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 05v225000 (suspension) and 06e026000 (exterior lighting). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 149,000.

My fuel tank is rusted completely through to the point of leaking gas. I know toyota has recalled the frame (replaced) and the spare tire holder (not yet replaced) due to rust. Seems like the whole underside is rusting out.

Gas tank shield severely rusted. Under side of gastank is protected by a shield/skid plate. It is rusted so badly that when hit with a hammer the hammer goes right through.presumably this shield is to protect the gas tank from debris and stones especially if the truck is used off road.i discovered this as i was inspecting the underside of the truck before dropping the truck off at the dealer to have the frame replaced.in addition to this, it is apparent that the drive axle and differential housing also have severe rust. If tapped with a hammer the rust comes of in sheets. The parking brakes actuating levers have rusted in place and can no longer be used.there appears to be more to this rust than simple frame rust. The rust is pervasive through out the underside of the truck.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma.the contact stated that he cannot put fuel in the gas tank of his vehicle without the pump shutting off every tenth of a gallon.he stated that he has to pull the lever 141 times to fill up his gas tank.the failure occurs every times he attempts to get gas and at any fuel station.the current mileage was 33,000 and failure mileage was 30,000.updated 02-04-08.

I was not notified of several recalls on my 2002 toyota tacoma truck.

Dealership doesn't have the equipment to performfuel leakage recall 03 v 189 000 repairs within a reasonable time frame.

I could hear a rattling noise. Upon inspection i saw that the fuel tank had dropped almost to the ground. The rear strap , that holds the fuel tank to the body had broken from corrosion(rust) . This rust had also destroyed the protective shield thatwas mounted over the fuel tank strap ,to protect it from corrosion and physical damage. A gas tank falling tothe road is a safety hazard.

Emergency cable is broken.

Parking brake system continually freezes up due to poor cable and springrouting. Problem appears to be well known to area mechanics.

The rust on the rear end assembly is so severe that the brakes are compromised, and the back up emergency brake system has failed.the rust on the differential housing is so severe that the fluid has leaked out and the gears are at risk for catastrophic failure.the spring mounts to the axles are also rusting severely, creating a risk of lost control should either side break away.it takes great effort when braking, and the vehicle pulls severely due to rust causing the loss of integrity of the braking system.the brakes, once applied, do not release evenly, creating uneven brake wear, shuddering and shaking, resulting in poor control, excessive and uneven tire wear, i.e., tires locked and dragging, scalloping.on wet, and i fear, icey, surfaces, the truck has slid sideways due to one or more wheels not releasing.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. While driving approximately 10 mph, the ball joint fractured and came apart. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and was later towed to mike erdman toyota (1545 e merritt island causeway, merritt island, fl 32952) where it was diagnosed that the ball joint separated and damaged the axle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 05v225000 (suspension). The failure mileage was approximately 334,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

I took in my 2002 tacoma for an oil change and was told that they could not put it up on the lift due to excessive corrosion on the frame. I only recently bought the truck in oct. 2013 with 65k miles on it. All else works fine. After explaining the issue to toyota they advised me to take it to the dealership for inspection. The dealership then told me that they were only covering the rusted spare wheel casing in the recall, not the entire frame, and advised me to take it up with toyota corporate. The model before the '02 was recalled due to excessive corrosion on the frame (in cold weather states) however the problem seems to persist in later models. Has anyone had luck calling toyota about this? i'm in a tough spot as i purchased the truck recently (although the rust damage did not appear as bad then and i'm wondering if some coating was applied at the dealer) and would have missed any recall on the frame if there had been one.

The automatic transmission shifts too soon, making the engine struggle and vibrate at low rpms.while still under warranty, i took it to the dealership and they said all the new 4 cylinder trucks were like this.at 12000 miles, the valves are tapping at idle, and the hood vibrates.seeing the other complaints on this forum, i now remember how squirly the truck gets after going over bumps.that would explain the bad front shocks.i hope i don't get into a bad accident knowing the air bags are not going to work.

Transmission line blew off, causing vehicle to stop accelerating.dealer was notified. Mechanic replaced hoses and added a clamp.

Transmission "clunks" on stops and surges after brake is released from stop.dealer said this is normal.i contacted toyota hq and they refused to comment on problem.said dealer is the expert.i guess the expertise of the design of the vehicle is left up to the dealers not toyota.

For the last year i have brought truck back to sf toyota dealership for transmission problems , suspension problems rattling dash board, squeaking sounds from seat and front bushings. All these problems still have not been fixed. After15 visits to dealership,sf toyota left scratches on body and lost mud flap.body now tilted after service. *nlm

Power train - just bought my truck about 3 months ago. During the test drive, i was extremely impressed by the ride of my tacoma. A few weeks after i had it, i started to experience the clunking sound coming from underneath. I have to the dealership 3 times now, and everytime i have been told was normal. I was told all automatic transmissions do this. This is the second toyota truck i have owned, and i could tell you this, they don't come up with a resolution, it will be my last. I also drive a celica (great car), but if i lose the truck, then i losing the celica, and will want nothing to do with toyota's again!!!

Transmission "clunks" on stops and surges after brake is released from stop. Feels like you've been rear ended. Dealer said this is normal, "they all do it". I contacted toyota hq and they refused to comment on problem. Vehicle value is greatly diminished.

After about 1100 miles we started to get a bad shudder when setting of, toyota said this normal, the truck as now started to shudder going from 1st to 2nd, toyota said this is normal, then the engine started to vibrate through the cab at 3000 miles, toyota said this is normal, the transmission then started hard shifting, changing up,the later changing down, now when pulling grades and the transmission goes into 4th gear there is a vibration all through the drive line and cab, when in cruise the transmission hunts up and for no reason, toyota says all this is perfectly normalalthough 2 toyota techs agreed there is a problem 2 independant garages said there is a problem, every time we take it for repair to the dealership toyota tells us there is nothing wrong even though the dealership as said there is a problem toyota refuses to do anything.

Brought truck to toyota service for 5000 mile service reported auto trans jump in gear shift from 1st to second (mechanic said needed new transmission, after leaving service station noticed truck wasn't driving properly brought truck back mechanic said needs new front shock and rear shock.now it did not need new transmission even though it still jumps from gear to gear.

Transmission-power train.while driving in low speed situations the vehicle's transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd.....back and forth from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they advised that they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It has 76k miles on it. I was just wondering if anyone else was having this problem.l

Transmission/driveshaft experiences loud clunk noise when brakes are applied then released. This is a known problem to toyota however they offer no resolution. Research has indicated adding leaf springs to stiffen rear suspension resloves this issue toyota will not do this modification.

My 2002 tacoma vibrates at high speeds and when stopping. I've had the brakes fixed 5 times now and it's still not right. My transmission clunks when i stop and start, shutters when coming to a stop, and shifts hard. Sometimes the transmission clunks after i've already started moving.the problems started about a year ago. I've recently been to two dealerships before the warranty expired and nothing was done. One toyota technician said it was my brakes, yeah right, the other wouldn't even take it for a test drive. I think the problem is caused by my transmission sliding back and forth, which i don't think it's supposed to do. Whenever i stomp on the gas to pass someone it shifts into the wrong gear and the engine red lines. My dash squeaks, so i have to wedge my wallet in between the windshield and dash to stop it. My driver's side door doesn't shut flush with the body. Last but not least, i had to replace my oxygen sensor. I would like to sell my truck, but can't with all the problems. This was my first toyota and will probably be my last.

2002 toyota tacoma. Consumer states in 2010 while backing out of the backyard, the left wheel axle broke *tgwthe consumer stated the exact same thing happened on july 1, 2011, only it happened on the opposite side.the consumer stated the tire twisted and the truck skidded into oncoming traffic.

The toyota tacoma had a rear axle wrap up, thiswas where the two piece driveshaft becomes loose at the spleen and causeda clung or looseness in the drive line, which caused undue stress on the engine and the transmission, which could cause the driveshaft to break at the yoke and fall to ground, causing an accident.this wasgetting progressively worse on the truck.i have taken the car under warranty to the dealer.they dismissedit as normal.this wasnot normal.it was a flaw in the springs they used on the truck.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the frame started to deteriorate. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician applied an under coating to the frame. The contact stated that the coating eventually wore off. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure.updated 04/21/14*ljthe consumer stated he made an appointment for the corrosion frame recall. Before the appointment, he noticed a lot of oil droplets on the tail gate of the truck, as he drove off, he noticed a puddle of oil. An inspection revealed, the differential case was leaking and it needed to be replaced because it was extremely rusty. Also, the frame was rusted, and it needed to be replaced. Updated 04/24/14

My toyota tacoma has what toyota refers to as rear axle wrap up, where the two piece drive shaft becomes loose at the spline and causes a clunk or looseness in the driveline which cause undue stress on the engine and the transmission, which could cause the drive shaft to break at the yoke and fall to ground causing accident.

Rusted out rear differential - 2002 toyota tacoma.

My experience with manual transmission on my current and previous toyota pick-up trucks was not very good. First my previous, earlier model 98 toyota tacoma 2wd manual transmission had failed at about 55,000 miles just prior to the 60,000 mile powertrain warranty limit. The failure happened at the synchronizer from 4th to 5th gear when shifting from neutral according to toyota technician at the time. The safety issue on this is that while driving and one needs to shift to 5th gear from neutral, one may have difficulty shifting and the transmission could have a catastrophic failure and at such freeway speed the vehicle could suddenly stall, stop and may go in a tailspin. Previous dealer where i bought the vehicle from repaired the transmission per the warranty. Now i have another toyota tacoma pick-up 4x4 having the same problem. I took it to the a toyota dealer previously since it was still under warranty for powertrain and around 55,000 miles but dealer refused to take a look at the problem even after repeated attempts to get the problem corrected. I informed them that i have a similar problem before and they have fixed it. But this time around they refused. I have attempted several times from sep 2006 until jan 2007 and even called toyota usa reps on the issue. I still own the truck and to get around the synchronizer problem, i have to downshift back to 3rd, 4th before i can go back to 5th gear. This can cause a lot of distraction while driving and to con unwitting driver unaware of what to do suddenly shifts to 5th from neutral the manual transmission squeaks/rattles like the sound of gears having problem meshing or breaking - thus in a worst case scenario one may loose driveability and capability to move the vehicle since the drive could get lost and may result in a failure. I kind a give up on it since the dealers and toyota usa before don't want to pay attention to me. I know this current toyota recall may result in them looking into this - safety issue.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the front driver and passenger side seat belts failed to retract intermittently and the thread unraveled. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 227,000.

Driver seat belt does not retract after release. Concerned the seat belt may be defective during an accident.

The left front seat belt locked up and failed to release when applied. Driver brought vehicle to thedealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the seat beltretractor and other parts needed to be replaced.

I have a tacoma 2002 and the brakes have been replaced three times.although i have called and explained the sometimes they slip, toyota refuses to really look at them.i wanted to file this in case they do give while i am driving, there will be a record of this problem, since i have mentioned it several times to toyota but they never write it down, according to the newest customer service? person i spoke to.i have been told that the clunking noises, the 5 month brake changes and the slipping of the brakes is natural.this cannot be right.

The brakes vibrate upon decreasing speed from 60 mph or more.the longer driven, the necessary speed for vibration decreases to lower speeds.the problem intensifies the higher the grade is on any downhill.i have replaced pads twice and rotors once.as i begin to replace the calipers, i find that there is a recall for those on the tundra and a list of consumer complaints about tacoma's brakes. *nlm

2002 toyota double cab 4x4during mountain driving, my front brakes will make the truck shake.i would describe the feeling like bad abs, however, i do not have abs.this problem only seems to occur when i am going downhill (like loveland pass).the shuttering does not depend on the speed of deceleration. Once it starts it seem to be there until the brakes have plenty of cooling time.i had it into the dealer and they could not find anything wrong with it or get it to do it.however last time i was in for other repairs, the service manager mentioned that 2000-2003 tundra's had a service bulletin for a similar problem but there was not one for the tacoma.i tried to look up information to see if the braking systems consisted of the same components, but was unsuccessful.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma.while driving 45 mph, the front brakes detached from the pads and became jammed between the rotor and the caliper.a portion of the brakes struck the front fender like a bullet.the contact called toyota, but they would not assist.he repaired the vehicle himself and stated that he was taking his vehicle out of service for safety reasons.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 38,000.

Abs light came on went off then came back on and stayed on. Toyota took three hours to figure it out. Abs control modual ( abs cpu )

Consumer states that the brake pedal and gas pedal are located too close together.when brakes are applied they go all the way to the floor, and if your foot is not in the middle of pedal it can hit the gas pedal. Mrjlg

Front wheels wobble when the brake pedal is depressed. Also, there's an unknown squeaking noise. This is caused by premature brake wear, per dealership.

The brakes on the right side of my toyota tacoma pickup are dragging making is difficult to steer.when toyota dealership pulled the wheels off the truck and checked the brakes there was significantly more wear on the front right break pads then the left side.i had the breaks replaced and kept the worn out brakes for your inspection.it appears the right-side caliper failed making it hard to steer and causing the brakes on the right side to wear out in less than 15,000 miles.toyota says this is normal even though this is a major safety hazard. *nlm

The parking brake intermediate lever rusted ,resulting in the parking brake not disengaging.at highway speeds the truck was vibrating so badly that it felt like a wheel was falling off.after returning homeat35 mph the left rear wheel was extremely hot which resulted in warping the drums. It was extremely hard to control the vehicle over 40 mph.the parts need to be ordered and the problem has not been fixed as of this time.the lever in question is the one that linkedthe parking brake cable into the rear brake drum assembly.itwas covered by a rubber boot that obviously didnot keep out moisture, thus rusting.once the vehicle was jacked up the left rear tire would not even turn due to the brakes not being able to disengage.

Braking problems with a 2002 toyota tacoma 4x4.shaking of truck when brakes were applied.front brakes were resurfaced and adjusted on 8/6/03.problem continued and i was charged to replace rear drums & shoes on a truck with less than 30000 miles on 8/15/03.

I recently took my 2002 toyota tacoma into the local dealer, dch in wappingers falls ny, because of leak in the rack and pinion steering. Upon looking at the vehicle, they observed a cracked and rusted frame. We took the car down and i went to my local repair shop for a second opinion. That repair shop had said there was a frame recall for that year. I called toyota in california and they confirmed there was a recall for that year and that they sent out a notice, but it had to be brought by the end of 2012. I told them i never received the notice. There have been 2 other recalls for the vehicle which i did receive notices. They checked with their compliance office and said they did send it to me. I asked how many notices went out and they said one and they do not send them certified mail. When i stated that i never received the notice, they told there was a department that may still be able to assist me. After opening up a case with toyota, they came to the conclusion, there was nothing they can do about it because i failed to bring the car in by their deadline. I told them again that i never received the notice and that i don't feel safe driving the vehicle with a rusted and cracked frame. This seems to be problem with a good deal of toyotas. I was hoping for some kind of help, since they've admitted the problem and i never received the notice and we, at this point have only their word that they sent me a notice. Thank you.toyota case# 1405131065. Updated 07/03/14

After having my 2002 toyota tacoma off the road and garaged for the past 3 years, i was getting the truck ready to be driven on the road again. I am the original owner.i took the truck off the road because my job was eliminated in october 2010. After changing the oil last weekend in my garage i noticed an abnormal amount of rust on the frame. In fact, so much rust that the rubber body mount block on top of the rear leaf spring snapped off in my hand. The leaf springs, brake lines, and front suspension and frame are all in question regarding vehicle safety. I immediately did research online to check out what i thought was abnormal amounts of rust on the frame and to see if anyone else had experienced this too.i was shocked at what i found.a huge safety issue with toyota tacoma rusted frames.i come to find out online that toyota has a history of rusted frames, breaking frames, unsafe frames, and a recall currently for a rear spare tire mount issue due to rust. I also found out toyota was replacing frames on my model. I called my dealership to set up an appointment to have this truck inspected for pennsylvania state requirements and to have the rust checked.they told me my vehicle was not valid for the rust inspection and the frame replacement because the program expired, i was told to call toyota. I was never notified by toyota or my dealer there was an issue, not by mail, phone calls or certified mail. I had the truck parked in my garage for three years so it wasn't even on the road during this time. Several phone calls later to toyota and they refuse to replace my frame under the customer care program citing i did not have the undercoating applied by december of 2012. Toyota customer service said i could weld reinforcement plates to my frame myself or find a junkyard frame. Really toyota?

2002 toyotoa truck, lost control and hit my ford s/w,truck was on recall for ball/joints , both me and wife was hurtby this un insured driver, driver was cited for wrong turn into my lane, i lost both my car and my health, what can i do to recover damages from a uninsured truck and driver?

Dt: the contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. He states that on march 20, 2005 he hit a telephone pole head on when his steering locked up and the air bags did not deploy.

While driving steering power assit pump failed.consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined thatsteering pump needed to be replaced.

Noticed abnormal tire wear on front tire. Took vehicle in for wheel alignment and was informed the bushing, integral to rack and pinion has failed.as a consequence the whole rack and pinion steering system needs replacing.mechanic informed me this is a common problem for toyota tacoma.he also informed me he has had tacomas with as little as 9000 miles having this problem.my tacoma has 19000 miles on it, i guess we are lucky.he also stated he did not understand why there has not been a recall.apparently it is a common defect.this tacoma has never been off road or otherwise abused since we bought it new.this problem could lead to steering failure.

Purchased this vehicle as certified pre-owned vehicle.massive leaks rendered back of drivers side crew cab flooded.reversed drain plug previously installed up side down, then siliconed oem roof rack and leak slowed.toyota is replacing rear door seal. Was not notified oem roof rack negated warranty.cpv shouldn't leak.

Excessive amount of rust on frame of 2002 toyota tacoma pick-up. Frame shows extensive corrosion from inside working it's way out. I am very concerned that the life of this vehicle will be drastically reduced due to this issue. I understand that toyota is investigating this problem for years 95 through 2000. What about years newer than 2000 that are experiencing the same problem????

My fuel tank is rusted completely through to the point of leaking gas. I know toyota has recalled the frame (replaced) and the spare tire holder (not yet replaced) due to rust. Seems like the whole underside is rusting out.

Frame rusted and cracked.

Rear bumper decay/structure breakdown on 2002 toyota tacoma. Unsafe in case of from the rear collision. Noticed start of rust/loss of structure in 2/2006.

Truck dash has rattled since shortly after we bought the truck.never has been fixed correctly.also, the cruise control doesn't keep you at consistent speed at all on mountains/hills.if you want to go 55, it will put you up over 60 very quickly and then gradually drop you down to around 55.

Sometime in 2012,my spare tire and rim were lost on the highway due to a failed spare tire carrier.the lift plate on the spare tire carrier, failed due to corrosion and released the spare tire (and rim) on the highway.no crash of incident occurred because no one was following the vehicle at the time.

Water is entering the vehicle around the support handle on the driver side of the vehicle.vehicle was purchased one year ago.problem became evident this past fall and when brought to the dealership this february they refused to repair under the corrosion warranty.vehicle is over the standard warranty mileage.

*nlm

Motor mount bracket broke on 2002 toyota tacoma 4x4 extra cab.purchased vehicle used from royal toyota in bloomington, indiana on jan. 25, 2006, along with an extended warranty (36,000/36 month). Have driven it less than 3,000 miles - mostly highway. Discovered oil leak under the front. Fortunately, took it to a performance toyota in fairfield, ohio before the motor fell out. The bracket is not covered by the warranty. This vehicle was purchased as a certified inspected used toyota vehicle. The bracket broke for no apparent reason.

I called toyota in 2012 to ask about frame. Was told i didn't qualify. Have had to replace everything attached to frame in a 2 year period. Last fall the gas tank fell off. Frame so rusted it wouldn't hold it. Called toyota again, as recommended by mechanic, was told i didn't qualify. Went to dealer for recall repair on spare tire holder, they couldn't fix it. Too rusted. Told me it s not safe to drive. Told me to call toyota. I did. Told me i didn't qualify because recall expired. Expired?! i have never received a recall notice!! i have lived at the same address for 32 years. They found me this time, they should have found me for that one. Now what? i am out well over $3500 dollars i've paid out the last 3 yrs and its not safe! need help here.

This is in response to the new toyota recall on the sienna mini-vans spare tire.i own a 2002 toyota tacoma, in which the frame was recently replaced due to rust perforation in certain states.i am the original owner and back in 8/2007 i had a flat tire and had to change it.the spare tire resides under the vehicle and is secured by a cable.when i went to access the spare, i noticed the whole cable and the surrounding pieces were severely rusted and was very difficult to separate the tire from the cable.after hearing about the recall on the sienna for the spare tire getting rusty, and possibly falling loose while driving, i realized that my tacoma, and possibly other vehicles that use this method, and are exposed to extreme climate conditions, could trigger a similar event.

The chasis on the truck is rusting out.the majority of rust is near and around both rear tires.there was a recall but toyota will not honor the recall. The vehicle only has 83000+ miles

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the frame and chassis were corroded. The contact was also concerned that the spare tire would become detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer advised the contact that there were no open recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 212,000.

Rusting frame.i brought my 2002 toyota tacoma truck to dealer for the corrosion resistant spraying to prevent further rusting of frame.spraying completed on 03/25/03.rust on frame continues.spraying did not work.toyota said they only spray truck once.rust warranty extended for 15 years expiring on 10/01/16.toyota should extend rust warranty with no expiration date as truck will have to be sprayed every two years.earlier years rust warranty covered replacing frame or vehicle buyback.toyota should cover same warranty for later year tacomas as rust problem persists in every year. Leaf springs and hardware are rusted as are muffler brackets leading to potentional safety hazard if items fail while driving.toyota admitted rust proofing not done properly by subcontractor.please hold toyota accountable for their negligence in properly protecting frames, springs.and suspension systems with corrosion resistant materials.toyota is just buying time until warranties expire.after that time the owners will have no recourse with toyota.

I purchased this vehicle from motorcars of lansing on 12/5. The only disclosure was rust on bumper. Everything else appeared ok until i had it checked for rust. When hit with a hammer the frame fell apart. I called the dealer & they said "sorry the recall expired in 2011". I contacted toyota directly who told me the same thing. Basically i'm stuck with a vehicle i can't drive because it's not safe. What i don't understand is this vehicle had been serviced at several toyota dealers during the recall time & no one repaired the frame. This vehicles is not drivable, it's not safe & no one will help me get it fixed. How can a toyota dealer send a vehicle to auction knowing there was a recall on the frame that was never repaired?

I own a 2002 toyota tacoma. The vehicle was taken to a tire shop and the technician noticed that the frame of the vehicle had a considerable amount of rust. The dealer diagnosed that the frame needed to be replaced due to the rust and the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The vehicle needs to repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 150,000.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires). The contact took the vehicle to the dealer to have the recall repair performed; however, the recall repair was unable to be performed due to excessive rust on the subframe. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 88,000.

The contact was informed that the recall repair could not be performed due to excessive rust on the vehicle's frame. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 212,000.

Frame rot from inside out. Suspension mounting to frame rotted out. Totoya refuses to deal with this and claims the safety recall is expired. How can a recall be expired. Case #1606101548 . Toyota representative very rude and demeaning.

I recently took my car to my mechanic and he informed me of a recall for my car made due to the rotting of the frame. I've had my daughter call toyota, who's informed her that mails were sent to my home about the recall, which i have never received. I feel the condition of the frame in my car is a very dangerous hazard and i am not able to use this vehicle afraid of what might happen.

Body frame is rusted to a point where the vehicle is unsafe to drive

In 2012 we received a recall notice for this vehicles frame. We took the vehicle into the dealership and we were told everyhthing looks ok. No other action was performed on the vehicle. Yesterday we noticed a crack in the frame. The car is non driveable. We called the dealership and we were told this is now out of warranty. I called toyota hq and they stated had it been sprayed - which was toyotas direction on this recall, it may have prevented the rusting and cracking but since the dealer didn't doit, it is now out of anything anyone can do. I asked them if they would send me a copy of the directive given to the dealships on how to handle this recall and they said that is not something they could provide and they cannot take action against the dealership. Can you please help me with this? i feel that if the dealership had done the spraying as they had been instructed, we may not be in this situation today.

Frame is rusting real bad and falling apart.called toyota and dealer and they said there is nothing they can do. There is a substantial cracking and breaking apart on the frame i read online this is a known issue and there is problems with a lot of tacoma's and like trucks. But no one wants to take ownership of the problem. Everywhere else on the frame is little rusty given the age of the truck but in one spot it is absolutely horrible and scary. I don't know what else to do or where else to turn.

Truck was taken to dealer about 5 years ago or less for underbody spray and frame inspection "recall". Truck was cleared as safe. Today, tire shop informs me frame is unsafe to lift the car by, and proceeded to put his hand through the frame to show the severity of the issue. So i take the truck to my local dealer and ask them what can be done about it. They inform me that, this "program" ended in 2016.i read that 10mm holes in frame would issue a frame/car recall. There is no way there wasn't an issue less than 5 years ago. I believe this is negligence of the dealer in keeping people safe in this vehicle and on the highway.

The frame on this truck was recalled and now toyota motor sales usa, inc. Is telling me it was an old recall and the owner that own it before me didn't get it fixed so they don't have to fix it because the time limit is over.im the second one to own this truck and didn't know they was a recall on the frame.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma.the contact stated that while in park, the contact noticed that the rear leaf springs were detaching from the vehicle due to corrosion. The failure mileage was unknown.

I have a 2002 tacoma that was part of the frame perforation recall. However, i did not get a frame replacement. The "fix" was to apply a gel over the rust on the frame, which, subsequently, all fell off the frame onto my driveway. Recently, i took my truck into the dealership for a 4wd repair and was told that my "frame was shot" and the truck was "unsafe to drive", due to that. And if they lifted my truck to do the repair, it might "crush my frame". I expressed my displeasure for the recall fix and had them do an estimate on the 4wd repair. They came back with an outrageous number, as if they did not want to do the work. I have since contacted independent repair shops and no one will touch it. *so, i have a truck no one will repair, i can't sell it, i can't trade it in...and i can't drive it. It has no worth.one of my leaf springs has rusted and broken, too. The truck has 215k and is in good condition other than rust. The engine will go 500k. I see recalls on the frame and leaf spring for other model years, but the 2002 seems to not fall into any of them. I don't expect a new frame, but assistance in obtaining a similar truck at a reasonable price or other fair solution may be a consideration.

Is there a recall on the frame of my truck?if not they should be because right behind the the cab of my truck the frame is broke.

There was a recall on the frame in 2010 and they said undercoating would protect that however now the frame is rusted and not safe to drive if i get in an accident it will fail. It only has 90,000 miles on it and toyota is refusing to do anything about it. I feel they should have a warranty on the frame.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while having a routine check on the vehicle by an independent mechanic, the technician became aware that the rear subframe was severely rusted. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 190,000.

Frame cracked at right rear box rail...

My frame has significant rust, and has holes in the frame near the passenger side leaf spring attachment. I purchased and registered the truck towards the end of toyota's goodwill campaign, but they did not notify me. Previous owner received no notice of campaign, so the frame was not sprayed internally with rust prohibitor treatment. Truck has approx. 136,000 miles, and is otherwise in good condition. Toyota should recall the frames for this model year like they did for other model years. The goodwill campaign was advertised inconsistently, and a serious structural issue should be a recall, not arbitrary. Case #1402130463 was established with toyota a few years ago, but they have not done anything about it. They also could not confirm that prior owner was contacted regarding goodwill campaign.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact took the vehicle to rick mcgill's airport toyota (865-970-2615, located at 3145 alcoa hwy, alcoa, tn 37701) for an oil change. The technician diagnosed that the entire frame was rusted and the vehicle was dangerous to drive. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The manufacturer also informed the contact that a customer support program, which provided assistance to vehicle owners, expired in september of 2017. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.

The frame is rotting out.toyota had the vehicle frame coated with some kind of tar substance because the frame was suspect to heavy corrosion.the coating which was done around 2010 did not work and the vehicle now has holes in the frame due to heavy rust.this is a known issue with these vehicles.toyota offered a non-working solution that did not fix the problem.the coating was just a gimmick and not a solution to the frame rot.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. While backing out of the driveway at a very low rate of speed, the rear driver side spring shackle suddenly fractured and rendered the vehicle undrivable. The failure mileage was 86,039. ....updated 07/11/16

My mechanic told me that the above vehicle's fame is structurally unsafe.i share this truck with my 18 year old grandson.i would just like to know if i have any recall with toyota before i proceed with either fixing it or junking it.it has 140,000 original miles and i believe i am the third owner.i live in the northeast.

Informed by dealer that frame is rusted through and truck is unsafe to drive.also informed that there had been a service bulletin for this problem.but my truck is no longer eligible for repair under the voluntary service recall (of which i was never notified), as it had expired.i think toyota should be responsible.they recognized their defective product; however my truck is ineligible for repair because they get to limit their responsibility because their remedy is not technically a "recall".i, and i'm sure many others, are by necessity, driving unsafe vehicles.

Purchased this truck 4 months ago for $10,900. Found no evidence of recalls on this truck on carfax and toyotas recall website. It is a great truck in pristine condition. However, after talking to a friend who has a 2004 tacoma he informed me that there was a recall and that his frame was sprayed to prevent corrosion. I called up toyota to see if it had been done on mine and they said no. I asked why they were spraying them and they said it was because the frame will corrode. I asked if it could be done to mine and they said that they stopped doing it at the end of 2011. I had joseph toyota inspect it yesterday and they informed me that the frame has a hole in it and would only have 2 years left. I asked toyota if they would repair the frame or buy the truck back as i have heard they do and they said no. So now i can either pass the problem onto someone else or wait until the frame fails.

I was informed by toyota case worker that the rusty frame recall expired and it is my problem now. I didn't receive any frame recall notice but received a spare tire lift plate recall (which doesn't expire) due to rust and severe corrosion. I was informed by dealership my truck was unsafe to even put on the lift to address current recall, of course they let me drive it home which is a 35-40 minute drive for me. I was forced to scrap my truck with a perfectly good motor because how unsafe it was and the expense to fix it on my own. I didn't realize the severity of the problem until i crawled under my truck and was beside myself! i had huge holes in the frame, the leaf springs were shot, all this was under the "undercoating" that was done at time of purchase to protect frame from rust! i paid extra for that! even my seat mounts on the interior back seat were rusted! i suspect the quality of metal used is on the lower side... I used my truck as a truck, hauled small amounts of mulch, soul for my garden, it moved me 5x! i didn't go muddling in it, park it in a pond, or live in a flood area. I just used it... How is there an expiration date for the ongoing problem that can ultimately jeapardize a persons safety as well as others on the road?! please hold toyota responsible...

My 2002 tacoma frame is simply rusting away and toyota refuses to get engaged to resolve what is clearly a manufacturing issue.the frame is getting to the point of collapse and unsafe to drive.this is frankly a crime.myself and many other tacoma owners have this exact issue and it would be great if the nhtsa steps up and prevents frame rot highway accidents due to poor manufacturing.

Excessive frame rust.i brought it into a toyota dealer for an inspection for rust to the spare tire carrier.the dealer refused to perform the inspection because they said the frame was too rusty for them to safely perform the inspection.

10/22/2012 recently had occasion to look at the frame on my truck, it is rusted through in many spots making vehicle unsafe, 2002 toyota tacoma, apparently i missed some "courtesy" frame program. I am stuck with a 10,000.00 truck that i can't afford to fix and toyota has said that they will not offer any help.i think this needs to go beyond a "courtesy " recall, with the large amounts of these trucks on the road in unsafe conditions new york state has forced an extension of this program, traffic safety should force a recall as there are thousands out there in this shape by toyotas own admission i would like repairs or fair market value.

Frame rust when purchased out of state (minnesota) from dealer and inspected on 10/2/2012 (in virginia, upon transport arrival).they said they believed it was mostly surface rust.inspected again in may of 2014 and found within 20 months and 24000 miles later, the frame had perforated, and deemed unsafe to drive.it was marketed as a vehicle in great shape, and wasn't cheap.much money is still owed on this condemned vehicle.these vehicles have a history of this, yet there is nothing being done concerning these unsafe vehicles.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that there was extensive rust and corrosion on the chassis and the frame had cracks on the passenger side from the front to the rear. Elmhurst toyota (440 w lake st, elmhurst, il 60126, (630) 279-2160) indicated that the vehicle was not safe to drive and that the entire frame and chassis needed to be replaced. The dealer and manufacturer indicated that there was no recall campaign to repair the vehicle. The failure mileage was not available.

The frame has rusted out and i have been trying for years to get toyota to cover this damage.

Mechanic told me that my frame was rusted through. He could put his fist through a hole in the frame and recommended i call a dealer to see if this was on a recall list. When i called and gave them the vin, they said no it is not a recall. What can i do?especially if i cannot afford another vehicle!

I reported to toyota (case #1606073163) and advised them of the rotted frame near the gas tank which was recalled.i purchased the vehicle 01/2016 and just found out about the problem when they tried to put the vehicle on the lift to replace the tires.toyota states the recall expired and would not repair or provide the chassis rails even if i absorb the labor and had them installed.the vehicle has low mileage and value but is unsafe and i cannot sell in this condition and toyota is indifferent saying too bad we can't help you.

At the yearly required state inspection the vehicle failed due to the frame being rusted out with holes.it appears to be a very common issue with this vehicle.

Independent mechanic informed me that frame had excessive rust/corrosion and to take to dealership.called dealer service (toyota of danville, il) and was told there was nothing they could do as they quit repairing these in march of 2016.no notice or recall was ever sent to me and i was unaware there was any problem until i got truck back from mechanic.i am now stuck with a vehicle toyota knew to have a defective frame, did not notify me to rectify or advise of the issue, and will not effect any repairs.

I was driving on a highway at about 55 mph. The right lower control ball joint broke so the entire wheel broke off the vehicle. The vehicle tried to run/jump over the wheel and caused the vehicle to slammed down on the asphalt. The truck dragged on the asphalt for about 100 to 150 yds until i managed to control andstop it.

My trucks frame rusted to where the cab is in grave danger of separating from the bed of the truck.we didn't get a recall on the frame and had no idea this was happening.the truck was bought new and we do live where they put salt on the roads.now, toyota said they will not help remedy this at all because the truck wasn't taken into a toyota dealership in approx. 6 mths or however long they had known about this.how were we to know it should have been taken in?we had no prior notice until we saw it ourselves and a mechanic noticed it and wouldn't jack the truck up to repair a brake line.he said it would separate the truck from the cab part.

Excessive unsafe frame rot from inside out. Toyota safety 'recall' offer to fix 'expired'.

Hello, i own a 2002 toyota tacoma and i brought it to a local toyota dealership where a service advisor came out to the parking lot, got under the vehicle and noticed that the frame has rusted through (he stuck his hand through the rust hole) near where the leaf springs attach to the frame. It is a known safety issue and toyota has repaired/replaced many tacoma's due to this safety issue. I did some research, and found out that toyota knows their frames are unsafe, and have extended the warranty to 15 years from the date of new car delivery. I tried to get mine replaced since its still well within time-frame, but they are stating that the original owner refused a frame inspection/application anticorrosion spray so now they will not honor the unsafe frame. I have vehicle service history showing other recalls (front ball-joint) were done, and other repairs to the car, so its likely that the original dealership did not offer the application anticorrosion spray, otherwise the owner would have had this free service completed (the customer serviced it regularly and kept it in great shape) and the frame would not be unsafe. Original new car delivery date was october of 2002, meaning the 15 year frame recall safety issue is covered until october of 2016 (a year from now). I spoke with toyota customer service and they are unwilling to do anything about this known safety issue. In any case, since toyota knows its a safety issue, and its well within the 15 year recall frame time-frame, why should toyota expect me to just drive around an unsafe vehicle?

This vehicle was already involved in a "campaign" by toyota to replace severely rusted frames. Now the spare tire lift plate is also rusted through on many of them which toyota is "implementing a remedy for".my complaint is that i have a severely rusted housing of the rear differential, next to and just below the rusted spare tire carrier lift plate, toyota refuses to pay for the rusted through housing of the rear differential. This is a negligent safety issue on their part, because those owners who are not aware of the leakage of this part may find themselves without power, or worse perhaps, a lockup of that part when they are going 65 mph on highway possibly with children in their vehicle. The rust on these vehicles is legendary among toyota owners as evidenced by their complaints on the internet. Toyota did replace the frame on my 2002 tacoma, but in my opinion, it is their responsibility to replace the rusted out housing. It is not as if that is the only rust on this vehicle, and no other vehicles that i am aware of have this problem.

I purchased a used 2002 toyota tacoma in february of 2015 only to find out the frame had serious rust issues. I found out through my own investigation that the truck had been traded in to the local toyota dealer and they knew it had rust issues. They proceeded to sell the truck at auction knowing it could be dangerous! i bought the truck from a used car dealer. Upon being told about the frame rust issue by my mechanic, i was told by toyota that it was no longer covered by service recall. I am now stuck with a vehicle that is unsafe and very expensive to repair.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact noticed rust on the vehicle's frame near the spring hanger on the passenger side. The contact took the vehicle the dealer, but the vehicle was not covered under warranty due to the coating on the vehicle. The dealer diagnosed that the frame of the vehicle was rusted completely through.the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000. Updated 01/25/2017*ct updated 7/10/18

Truck frame is rusted to the point the the vehicle is not usable.the problem has been confirmed by a local independent service center. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer. The first symptom was that the right rear shock became detached from the frame. When i brought the vehicle in to have the shock repaired they stated that there was not enough frame left in that area to re-attach the shock.

Part of the frame suddenly broke from the frame rail under the driver's side of the vehicle, resulting in a significant portion of material loosing all structural integrity. This was due, it seems, to a manufacturing defect in the frame quality leading to excessive rot and rust. The vehicle is now structurally unsound and thus unable to be driven safely.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the frame was severely corroded, had holes in it, and was separating from the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and was going to further investigate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 62,000 and the current mileage was 110,000.

I have driven this vehicle very little. Has 46500 miles, done in stamford ct a city that does not use salt in the winter but only sand. I noticed excessive rust under and it needed to weld steel plates to support the chassis twice ( the first when the car was 5 years old). In spite of that the deterioration continued and now the chassis is broken near the front passenger wheel making the cat lock ,unable to turn, undrivable, parked at home. Cars of this model were recalled by toyota at first some years ago and even after that more people complained and additional prior years were added. I have contacted toyota dealer in stamford and tells me it is prior to the latest recall.

My 2002 tacoma has severe rust on the frame and drive train and i was told by the toyota dealership that the truck under body was sprayed in 2010 and that there have to be holes in the frame to be covered. He also said that there was a 15 year warranty for my frame to which it is now 2018 and has exspired.i feel that toyota knew that defected steel was used for these frames from 2002.i won't even bother to get in touch with them because i know that they won't do anything about it.

There was extensive damage to the front left side of the vehicle from a collision. The radiator was pushed against the engine. Most of the driver side fender as well as the inner core support was crushed. Both airbags didn't not deploy.

I have a 2002 tacoma and found the frame where the front part of the rear leaf spring has rusted through.the over load spring is holding the driver side rear of the vehicle up.this vehicle had 50,000 actual miles on it and there is noway that this should be happening.

I went to have my tires rotated.when they raised the truck on the lift the frame broke on both sides of the truck near the bed. The entire bed of the truck fell backwards.the frame was completely rusted through.i had owned the truck for four years and never received a notice from toyota that this might be an issue.i called toyota and they admitted that there was an issue with the frame butmy vehicle was not part of the recall.as a result they refused to help fix the issue.my $11,000 truck is now totaled.a worker at the tire place could have easily been killed.this is also a concern with myself and family that drove in this vehicle unaware of any issue.toyota has avoided fixing a known problem by taking advantage of a weak recall requirement issued by the government and has cost hardworking families money and could end u costing someone a life.all to save money.why does toyota get to admit they made a mistake but only be required to fix in on vehicles they chose?

Vehicle failed inspection due to frame rust. Was told that its unsafe to drive. Researched and found that this is long ongoing issue with toyota and a number of there vehicles. Toyota has knowledge of this issue and still sold these inferior frames for many years.

I received a recall for a spare tire holder. I took the vehicle to le mieux toyota-green bay for repair and they told me that they could not do it because the frame was too rusted out and removing the old spare tire carrier would make the problem worse. Le mieux said that there was an earlier recall that addressed the frame issue. I did not receive that recall. I called directly to toyota usa home office and they refuse to fix the rusting frame issue. I believe that this happened maybe 2-3 years ago. I was not given a reason for rejecting my request for the repair., and i know that le mieux toyota has fixed other toyota vehicles with the same issues. I believe that they would not fix my vehicle because i am a 2nd owner. I have had service issues with this dealer on 3 other separate occasions, and i have refused to do business with them. With this recall issue i hoped for a positive solution, but that has not happened.

My frame in my 2002 tacoma is almost fully rusted . I contacted toyota and they are not willing to help even though they know that their trucks are rusting and that there was a previous recall set to replace the frame. Since i just got this truck form someone, i had no idea of the recall and of the rust . The car is no longer safe to drive at this point since it is about to break in half .

Excessive rust corrosion on the vehicle frame.excessive rust corrosion to the point where there are actual holes in the main frame of the vehicle where the vehicles suspension attaches. The vehicle had been inspected for corrosion and under recall and had additional corrosion protection applied.i just noticed the holes in the frame on march 2, 2017 and wish to inquire if the vehicle falls under the extended frame warranty.judging by the extent of rust and damage to the vehicles frame, i feel confident stating that the damage happened several months to a year ago.

Vehicles frame is rusting through.i have never seen a frame rust through to the point where you can poke holes through it with a finger, this is happening with my tacoma and is very dangerous.i purchased this last april, and did not know about the frame issues toyota's have until they recalled the 05-15 models for the same exact issue,i heard they are also in the process of recalling 95-00.toyota will not assist me because their customer frame assistance program ended last month.even though i just purchased 3 months ago and this is not an issue a vehicle should have, toyota is going to get someone killed.the numerous toyota representatives i talked to told me they know their frames are faulty and that this was toyota's fault, yet he could not assist me due to company policy of their frame replacement program ending a month prior, even though almost all the years around my 02 tacoma have been recalled.toyota needs to be held accountable to an actual recall, not just a customer satisfaction program that they conveniently wont assist me with, before someone gets killed.i cant afford to get rid of this tacoma nightmare.there isnt even a speck of rust on the body, look underneath however and the frame is rusted out.

Shock rusted away from frame, mechanic tried to put on lift to fix and the frame started to pop and crack at the rear wheel area, it is rusted through. The frame was coated during the recall period in 2011 and they told me it was ok. I very much doubt that it was.

My tacoma was recalled 2 years ago for frame rust. They told me it was ok + undercoated it to prevent future rusting. All that undercoating is falling off. That can only be due to improper application or faulty product. The dealer that applied the product (ferris toyota) says the product is faulty + they've seen it many times. They've also confirmed the same with other dealerships. Toyota, otoh, says there's nothing wrong. If the frame doesn't need undercoating, then why'd they do it? are they suggesting it works when 50% has fallen off? this is the same vehicle which is now being recalled for spare tires falling off on the highway + my emergency brakes have been seized with corrosion since i've owned the truck. I've contacted toyota many times + they refuse to put their correspondence in writing, but the representative, tiffany bishop, says she types a transcript of our conversations, just won't give me copies. She also calls from a phone with a blocked number. What kind of bull is this? these vehicles are obvious hazards on the road + toyota is playing games instead of making serious efforts to make the vehicles safe. Please bring this to the attention of someone at toyota other than [xxx], i am finished corresponding with her!information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The frame was coated with an anti rust coating during the manufacturer recall that lasted until 2017 now the the metal is becoming porous and upon slightly tapping the frame one can poke holes in the frame with a pencil. The truck has become unsafe to drive. Upon taking it my local toyota dealer willis toyota of twin falls idaho in 2016 and 2017 they performed a poorly executed inspection just to avoid repairing the issue. They told me both times the frame was fine when it clearly was not. This truck has only 110k miles on it but is slowly becoming a pile of rust. How can a vehicle that is just 16 years old be so rusted. Toyota is of no help after repeated calls

Tacoma frame recall: good day, i was doing some research online with my matter and people were saying to contact the national highway safety administration. I have a 2002 single cab toyota tacoma which frame has totally rusted out now with a hole rite through the frame. I provided toyota with my vin number yet they say i am not eligible for a frame replacement yet this is a factory default on toyotas fault. My truck is currently extremely dangerous to be on the road and i use it every day for work where my line of work involves driving from house to house everyday all day and i was wandering if you could help with filing a claim against toyota? i have attached a picture of the frame which is above the rear passenger wheel.i look forward to your response. Driving at 35 mph went over bump leaf spring went up through frame causing vehicle to become out of control. Vehicle was inspected at valenti toyota in westerly ri and vehicles frame is rotted.

2002 toyota tacoma has premature frame deterioration on frame side rails and rear.rear frame is so bad that the rust is causing the bumberto lift up in the middle by about 1-2inches. Owner keeps truck washed and waxed even through winter months. Have not yet looked to get rear problem repaired.

I was getting into my truck and noticed that one of the screws that hold the door striker plate had backed out at least half the length of the bolt and the other one was loose. The door never rattled with it being loose. I was able to tighten the bolt. I checked all of the other doors and found they were loose, but not as bad as the driver's door.

While driving 35 mph hood flew open and cracked the windshield.due to no visibility through the windshield.vehicle hit the rear of another vehicle. Windshield was replaced on 7/10/2003.

Rusted frame on 2002 toyota tacoma. Took it to halterman's toyota dealership in june 2006. Dealership said it does not warrant rust on frame. Was told to undercoat the vehicle. Vehicle was undercoated august 2006. Undercoating started to peel away january 2007. Now the frame looks as if it's starting to rust through. This is a concern to me because i had a 1999 toyota tacoma that had total rust perforation in frame january 2006. I sold it for a third of it's kelly blue book retail value in march 2006 before toyota implemented their buyback program in march 2008 for 1995-2000 tacomas displaying rust perforation. I now see the same situation happening all over again and toyota will not take any responsibility. I am beginning to become afraid to drive my vehicle in fear of the frame breaking from underneath me.

Severely rusted frame and undercarriage components.including the gas tank skid plate, had to replace rear bumper already as well.also had to wire up the skid plate so it won't fly off into someone's wind shield.brought it to a dealer in march and they inspected it and said all it needed was paint, so they painted it.now just 8 months later and the skid plate is about to fall off!just waiting for my brakes to fail some day.

I recently received a letter from toyota about a frame rusting problem they are having on tacoma trucks built between 2001-2004.the front bumper assembly on my truck was replaced soon after i purchased it because is was rusting from the underside.now the rear bumper is rusting through from the underside as well.when i called toyota about their recent recall they said only the frame was included in the problem, not the bumpers.it is obvious to me they have a rust problem everywhere under the vehicle since my front bumper rusted so quickly and now the rear bumper is also rusting through from the underside. I called the toyota dealer where i purchased the vehicle and they told me the recall was just for rusting frames.as i stated above, it certainly appears as though the rust problem involves everything under the vehicle.my truck is a 2002 tacoma and it has been garage kept since the day i bought it.living in southern maryland (21122), we have had very few instances of snow/salt in our area since i purchased the truck and i keep my vehicle clean and always use the undercarriage wash when going through the car wash.i believe toyota definitely has a rusting problem and should replace my rear bumper as they did with the rusting front bumper assembly.your assistance in this matter is appreciated.

I have a 2002 toyota tacoma with a rusted frame which failed, but the dealership wrote "ok to drive" on my slip.i originally brought my vehicle in for inspection at a private auto shop on 8/12/08 and they told me to go to a toyota dealership right away to get my frame inspected.i went and the dealership turned me away, i asked why and they indicated that i did not have a case number.i called toyota and they gave me a case number and closed the case the next day because my vehicle was outside the 95-00 recall yrs.i insisted that they have my vehicle inspected by toyota and on 9/12/08 the boston regional representative failed my frame. Prior to that irwin motors in laconia nh also inspected it and told me to keep bugging toyota because they will drag their feet. The dealership has indicated to me that this is a huge problem for 01through the 2004 year frames.toyota indicates that they will negotiate a buy back with me but will not send any thing in writing, they will not give any time frame for resolving or even negotiating the buy-back.i have friends who are mechanics who indicate that toyota should recall from 2001 to 2004 as well since the same frames are being produced and used for these vehicle as used for the 1995-2000 vehicles.i have a newer toyota and they have indicated to me that they will repurchase my vehicle and based it on 100% kelly blue book only. I believe that if others have received a 150% buy-back that they should extend that offer to me as i have owned eight toyotas in the past ten years.i am disappointed in toyota.the longer period of time goes by, the less my vehicle will be worth if they are buying back at blue book prices.we have drove by many dealerships in our area, there are many 01-04s which have been bought back, but when talking to my case manager, she indicated that the there were only a few outside the recall years, i have to disagree as the dealership lots indicate otherwise. Can you help us owners out?thank you

I am the owner of a 2002 toyota tacoma, which i have been informed by my local dealership, that there is a repurchase program available. Problem is, i had my truck at the shop on nov 11, 2008, nobody has got in touch with me, i was told by toyota i would hear something in 45 days. Finally got through to toyota, now, the repurchase program is not available as of december 2008. They are wanting to replace my entire frame. I have alot of safety issues with this being done, i feel this is entirely unacceptable. So, for the time being, i am driving what is considered an unsafe vehicle. Oh, one person says it is safe, the other says, it is drivable. I would appreciate any help possible with this issue. I have been told that this is a major issue with toyota, they need to make it right by the consumer.

I took my tacoma for its 95000 mile service, and they discover my sub-frame was rusted out and it was unsafe to drive. My truck has gone for service every 5000 miles for 7 years and no one ever noticed the rust. My complaint is that toyota does not cover the subframe in their frame rust problem. The dealer tried for 2 days to get them to include this in their 2001-2004 rust frame repair or buy back program. They refuse. Why isn't the sub frame part of the whole frame. I believe the sub frames should be looked at.

I am the owner of a 2002 toyota tacoma truck. The vehicle has 53k miles on it and has excessive rust throughout the frame.the frame while not completely rusted through, has severe buildup around welds and joints.toyota is recalling 1995-2000 tacoma trucks for this exact problem, but 2001-2004 models are excluded.this is a serious problem and should be included in toyota's current campaign.

Excessive truck frame rust, 02 toyota tacoma truck, toyota has had problems with 95-04 tacoma's with the frames rusting, some getting bad enough to be a safety concern, with frame perforation.my truck is showing the early signs of frame rust, and will eventually get to the point where it could become a safety issue.i wanted to have nhtsa complaint on file in case the frame rust perforates the frame.

The second toyota tacoma i have owned in one year failed on 02/28/2011. Both frames failed due to rust. Both problems were discovered during a routine oil change. Toyota bought back the first truck last summer, so i decided to buy another later model tacoma. The second tacoma problem occurred on a lift at auto choice in derry nh. The truck bent in half when the lift was raised. The mechanic has been in business for 30 years and had never seen such a thing. Luckily, he was not under the truck and fortunately i was not driving the truck for my frame replacement appointment the next day. Ira toyota towed the vehicle and gave me a loaner. I am told that they will replace the entire frame . In talking to my father, mechanic friends and legal friends an issue kept coming up - if the frame is that corroded, it would follow that parts attached to the frame would be corroded as well. This presents an alarmingly serious safety problem.i would add that there should be an immediate investigation into the safety of this procedure as well as a media requirement made that toyota run advertisements on tv, radio and print warning the public about this serious issue. My truck looks immaculate and has been well maintained. Had i not done an oil change, the outcome would have been much different. I can think of no other component in a motor vehicle that is more important that the frame, it holds everything together and supports everything. This issue needs immediate attention. Ira toyota is the current location of the vehicle 603-657-2422.

In addition, two brackets that secured the body to the subframe detached due to rust and corrosion. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 123,000.

I bought my 2002 tacoma v6 4x4 double cab from a toyota dealership used in march of 2006. One thing i noticed is that the frame of the truck had excessive exterior rust build up. I used to be an automotive technician, and have always known that almost any toyota pickup truck has frame rust problems. It has been a well know fact for years and years. Why did toyota wait so long to post a recall on this problem. Shortly after buying my 2002 i looked at a older i believe 1995 toyota pick-up that i saw for sale one day. I was looking the truck over and found that the frame was rotted through on the drivers side just before the front spring shack on the rear of the truck. It had a hole in the frame about 2 1/2 inches wide, and where there was frame left you could put your finger through it with little pressure. I decided it wasn't anything i wanted to deal with. Now i heard about the recall for the first generation tacoma's 95-00 on the frames rotting out just like the one i looked at. So seeing that my 2002 tacoma was showing premature frame rust, i decided to inspect it closer. I found that not only was the frame rusting and flaking on the outside, it was also rusting on the inside as well. I also found that the welds on the frame for the spring hangers looked very poorly welded and rusty too. I believe that toyota should include the 2000 and newer tacoma's in their frame rot recall as well. Does any one know if they changed the quality of the metal used in the frames on the newer tacoma's or the design? how do they justify that the newer tacoma's don't have this problem? because they are too new to have rotted to that point yet? think about it, why else would they have waited so many years to post a recall on a truck that is at the least 8 years old? they obviously knew there was a problem. I know i am not the only one who owns a 2nd generation tacoma with this problem.

The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

In april of 2008 i noticed that the frame of my 2002 toyota tacoma pickup truck had an unusually high amount of surface rust showing on the frame. Upon closer inspection i discovered that in at least one location there is holes in the frame were it has rotted through. I have also inspected the interior of the frame members and have discovered large amounts of rusted metal that has fallen of the inside of the frame. It is obvious that the frame of this 6 year old vehicle with 71,000 miles on it is rotting from the inside and the outside. I am concerned that this is indeed a serious safety issue.

Frame is rusted through in multiple locations and has been treated with corrosion resistant coatings.the coatings are obviously visible but did not prevent the frame from rusting to an unsafe condition.the previous owner brought the truck in for other recalls that are recorded in its history.this one for the frame is not recorded however you can see the coating has been applied.the warranty extension is listed for 15 years.the truck is 13 years old but, a person representing toyota says it's expired with no explanation of how that is.so far she put me on hold for 20 minutes without being able to find the information to explain to me.

The sway bar arm bracket on the passenger side of the vehicle pulled out of the frame due to corrosion.the vehicle was found to have corrosion perforations in multiple areas of the frame.frame has excessive corrosion and i have been advised vehicle is not safe to operate.manufacturer refuses to do anything.

I purchased this truck with 100,000 miles in a private sale in 2010.i drove it for a few years and when i brought it in for inspection they failed it for a rusted out frame.they said that they wouldn't drive it and that it was very dangerous.i called toyota and they told me that they wouldn't do anything to help me out.they said since the previous owner did not get it sprayed the warranty was null and void.so my truck that has 100,000 miles and was kbb at $8-$9k is worth nothing.i am not a person that is well off and that was a big hit for me.i live pay check to pay check and i wonder how many others were effected by an obviously cheap frame.100,000 miles and the frame rusts, that just seems wrong.

I bought a used 2002 tacoma from a good friend. He took very good care of the truck, it was mint. After i bought the truck i asked about the frame recall, but he said when he took it in that they couldn't do it and he had forgotten to take it back. No negligence, just didn't see rust and didn't take it in for the under coating. I tried to get it done but toyota would not stand behind the warranty. Two years later and i have a some pretty bad frame rust. This is a safety issue and i really cannot afford another payment. There needs to be a recall for this problem.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires) and indicated that the dealer in new york was not able to do the undercoating process due to state regulations. In approximately mid august 2012, the dealer indicated that the remedy for this defect was not available at the time the contact tried to schedule the recall repair. The contact waited for years to determine when the manufacturer would finalize the remedy plan to repair the vehicle. The rust became extensive to the point that the underbody, the chassis, the leaf spring, and the rear wheel wells all had corrosion to the point that the components could fracture. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified for years of the failure and was unable to provide a permanent remedy. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

Vehicle has low miles yet the frame has rust holes in it.toyota won't do anything about it even though it has frame inspections in it's recent service history.the first inspection occurred in 2010, less than 7k miles ago.they indicated to me on the phone that due to an agreement with nhtsa that they could not do anything to help me.they would not take ownership for not inspecting the frame properly.this is a major problem with tacoma's, tundra's, sequoia's and 4runner's of this vintage in cold climate states.toyota acknowledged the frames were of poor manufacturing even suing the frame manufacturer, yet some get new frames, others like myself with a low mile truck are told they could do absolutely nothing even though the vehicle was traded in less than 1600 miles ago at a toyota dealership in pa.toyota needs to own up to this major safety issue and address it instead of skirting the issue without a proper recall.i have seen videos of tacoma's which have literally broken in half due to this problem.never did i think toyota wouldn't stand behind this potentially fatal flaw in frame manufacturing and corrosion resistance.my frame has a large 1"x6.5" hole above the right front leaf spring mount - a key attachment point for the rear suspension.

I took my truck t a toyota any a dealer to fix some emission issues, they asked if i wanted the frame inspected, they informed me about the frame rust/perforation issues that have plagued tacoma's for years from the mid 90's to 2010 tacoma,s. The frames rust from the inside out creating holes that cause a framed to fall apart and render the vehicle worthless!! a some point on 2001-04 tacoma's they sent out a tsb offering a voluntary customer inspection on the frames this program ended 6/11. Then some type of frame replacement program was offered to people that did the voluntary inspection until 7/14. So if you choose not to do or never received a notice your vehicle will fall apart and toyota doesn't care.my truck run and on the surface looks new drives like new however i can't drive it because it is unsafe. It has been reduced to a lawn ornament. I bought the truck from the original owner an he has lived at the same address for over 40 years he never! received any notice..toyota .replace my frame because you know it's a safety hazard.

I contacted toyota in november of 2013 prior to purchasing a used 2002 double cab tacoma. I was aware of the frame issue so i called to check to see if it had been serviced. He told me that it had not had the corrosion treatment, however, the corrosion treatment failed and was in the process of being reformulated.he said that the program had been reopened due to the fact that the treatment failed. He said after purchasing the vehicle i should take it to be inspected and if any rust was found it would be covered under the frame program. I purchased the vehicle in november of 2013 and upon inspection we found that the frame was rusted. In january of 2014 my husband called a local toyota dealer to set up an appointment for the frame inspection and they said that they had no idea about the frame program being reopened. My husband called toyota and they pulled up the vehicle and said since the original treatment had not been applied they would not honor the frame program. We spoke to several toyota associates and we were told that nothing could be done. We have contacted the toyota legal department and the virginia attorney general with no success.

Letter from congressman rahall on behalf of constituent re a recall from several years ago on his toyota tacoma sr 5 pick up truck.the consumer stated he saw on the news arecall had been issued, regarding defective frames, and he missed out on the recall, due to personal issues. He would like to get the vehicle fixed, because it can no longer be driven due to a cracked frame.

Had a recall on my tacoma. I had bought from father, he bought new from spartan toyota in lansing mi. It was for a possible frame rust recall.i have the records of taking it in for that purpose.it was cleared by service department. Apparently, they were supposed to spray a protective coat on the frame at no cost to me, which would include a 15 year warranty on frame. They did not do this. I sold truck to my son, approximately july 2014.he took it in for muffler work and they wouldn't put on hoist because frame is weak from rust. Everyone from the dealer and toyota national has said it should have been sprayed, but because it wasn't they sorry but can't do anything. I feel that solution to the service departments mistake is not adequate.do i have any other recourse to help my son? There was a recall on this vehicle for premature frame rusting. I took it in for the inspection and was told it was ok. When i took it in for the last service, it was pointed out to me that there are two holes rusted through the frame in front of the right rear wheel area. The frame is rusting from the inside out. The body of the truck has no rust. With the low mileage i had hoped to drive the truck for many more years. I contacted toyota and did not even get a response. What recourse do i have?

Frame is rusted and broken and truck is unsafe to drive.

Upon bringing 2002 toyota tacomato mechanic for tire rotation and oil change, the frame broke in half due to rust and corrosion.contacted toyota who said it was not covered under 2008 extended corrosion warranty since it had not been brought in for the undercarriage compound application before 2011.we were never notified by any recall that it should be brought in.

2002 toyota tacoma.consumer writes in regards to vehicle severe frame rust issue and no warning of recalls.toyota usa informed the consumer, a recall was not issued, but a customer service program was offered, but it expired at the end of 2011. The consumer was informed six letters were mailed informing her of the issue. However, the consumer stated she never received any letters.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, he heard a knocking noise in the rear or the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic for inspection where they stated that the rear shock was corroded needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 151,000.

Driving on local street, 25 mph, then heard clunking sound when hitting road bumps.mechanic inspection revealed shock mount completely rusted out of frame and excessive rust and rotting throughout the rear frame. Toyota will not help so will have repair privately and weld new sleeves to the frame. Toyota has created a very dangerous situation for its' customers by using inferior metals in its' frames for many years.

Vehicle failed inspection due to frame rust. Was told that its unsafe to drive. Researched and found that this is long ongoing issue with toyota and a number of there vehicles. Toyota has knowledge of this issue and still sold these inferior frames for many years.

The undercarriage is showing substantial rust and corrosion

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while traveling 25 mph, the front passenger side wheel separated from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where it was confirmed that the ball joint had failed, similar tothe defect listed in nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was 220,000.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. While backing out of the driveway at a very low rate of speed, the rear driver side spring shackle suddenly fractured and rendered the vehicle undrivable. The vehicle was examined by an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the failure was caused by severe rusting of the vehicle's frame. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 86,039. ....updated 07/11/16

The lower ball joint fell off the truck...this is the 3rd time this has happened in 11 months...once on the right side and twice on the left...there was a recall on this vehicle for the very issue that has happened...and i bought it under warranty september 2005 from toyota, evans toyota fort wayne indiana...i have submitted a claim for repairs and damages to toyota but they refused to honor it...the truck was under recall when i bought it and they never told me...i have all my claim and repair documentation...it is a wonder no one was killed the wheel just comes off while driving...i am afraid that this is going to happen and i or someone else will be killed...the wheels are not suppose to come off this truck....

The chassis of the vehicle is corroded, metal is exposed. Shocks bracket seems like it might break off. Concerned that vehicle will fail on the road.

The ball joints and suspension on my 2002 toy tacoma fell apart while making a routine turn onto my street! the balljoints separated and the front axle dug into the street, the only thing holding the wheel to the vehicle was the brake line! had this happened 5 minutes earlier it would have been on the freeway doing 65 mph instead of in a residential tract doing 20 mph!

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that when the vehicle was taken to the dealer (gerard toyota located on 543 colman st, new london, ct 06320) for service, the technician noticed corrosion on the rear passenger side frame and a crack in the rear passenger wheel. The shocks could be seen and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 193,672.

While driving away from my house at 5mph, at night in the rain, approximately 200 feet from my driveway and just after a speed bump, i heard and felt a loud noise, like driving over a concrete block.i stopped the truck and using a flashlight saw that the wheel was bent at an angle and the lower ball joint was completely sheared off. Had to call a tow truck to get it out of the road and back to our driveway.

Excessive unsafe frame rot from inside out. Toyota safety 'recall' offer to fix 'expired'.

2002 toyota tacoma was taken into the shop for an oil change, tire rotation and brake inspection when the shop service technician called to report the frame of the vehicle contains pinholes and is noticeably rusting, presenting a safety issue. The shop technician recommended contacting toyota directly as he thought any recall had since expired. Post researching recall information, we did verify that the "recall" period had expired.however, this vehicle was purchased new as a corporate asset and remains in our possession. We absolutely did not receive any recall notifications for the frame issues nor a request for inspection!

The contact stated that an independent mechanic inspected her vehicle and discovered severe corrosion throughout the entire undercarriage. The contact spoke with markquart toyota (1844 commercial blvd, chippewa falls, wi 54729) who informed her that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The contact then called the manufacturer who was notified of the failure and disregarded her concern with the corrosion. The manufacturer suggested the vehicle be sold and offered no further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 32,021.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (tires) however, the contact was informed by the service technician that there was excessive corrosion to the subframe of the vehicle. The contact stated that the corrosion traveled from the front driver side suspension to the rear driver side suspension. The contact was informed that the vehicle was unsafe and could not be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 169,175.

The frame at rear spring hangers has rusted throughrear axle separated from frame due to rust

I purchased a tacoma truck december 2014 with an undercoated frame, and was unaware the frames in these trucks rot out, it is now april i look under the truck and see the frame is completely rotten out to the point where there is holes every where and you can poke your fingers holes will develop, i contacted toyota they don't want to even touch the truck, i feel very unsafe driving the truck.

Frame is rotted, shock separated from frame

2002 toyota tacoma. Consumer states in 2010 while backing out of the backyard, the left wheel axle broke *tgwthe consumer stated the exact same thing happened on july 1, 2011, only it happened on the opposite side.the consumer stated the tire twisted and the truck skidded into oncoming traffic.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for an inspection. The dealer determined that there was rust on the leaf springs and stated that the vehicle was not safe to be driven. The manufacturer was notified, but denied any assistance with repairs of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 128,500.

I am a canadian citizen, currently the second owner of a 2002 toyota tacoma and have accessed this site to inform other owners but had to register this complaint under the previous owners name. This vehicle was purchased in new hampshire and returned to canada. In late 2011 i was advised that my vehicle frame was starting to show severe rust corrosion. I took steps, as advised, to have it undercoated but when taking it in for inspection this year, i was told it would not pass inspection. I was fortunate to be able to do a temporary fix by having the frame welded but that would only be in the short term. In pursuing this with toyota usa i've told that there was an extended warranty put on these vehicles which expired in 2011 and since they didn't have it registered in the united states there was nothing they could do. It seems like they do everything to avoid responsibility for this problem but i am aware they have replaced many frames for similar vehicles at their cost or paid out the customers by buying back the vehicles. So many customers are frustrated with toyota, me included and they've advised me since it isn't registered in the us currently they cannot do anything. On the other hand, checking with toyota canada then they say i have to resolve the matter with toyota usa. Talk about passing the buck back and forth. The vehicle has been registered in north america since 2002 and was built in california. Why should this matter? it's still a toyota. Poor customer relations for people with similar problems.

My frame is just rusted out in the back end it's never been flooded always taken care of very well and i heard about the frame recalls but my vin comes back with no recalls i just need to see if this can be investigated i know people who did qualify and there frames were perfectly fine but mine is just falling apart

Frame rot from inside out. Suspension mounting to frame rotted out. Totoya refuses to deal with this and claims the safety recall is expired. How can a recall be expired. Case #1606101548 . Toyota representative very rude and demeaning.

The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for routine maintenance when the mechanic advised that the frame was corroded. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for further inspection or repairs. The manufacturer was contacted and they advised that the vin qualified for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint) but the recall was expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 88,500 and the current mileage was 89,000.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, she heard an abnormally loud clunking sound as the vehicle began to veer independently to the right, without warning. The contact then pulled the vehicle over and called her husband who arrived at the scene and determined that the failure was caused by a defective ball joint. Upon investigation, the contact discovered nhtsa campaign number: 05v225000 (suspension) which she linked to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed her that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed nor repaired. The failure mileage was 109,544.

While driving home from picking up my daughter from school. I hit a pot hole my truck became very loose and hard to handle. I got home and inspected the truck. I found that the rear leaf spring mounts on both sides pulled/ ripped the frame! my back axel also slid back about 2"! i'm glad we didn't get hurt, but i can't believe that this is acceptable. I only wonder what would have happened if the axel would have came totally disconnected from the truck.

I drive a 2002 toyota tacoma. Heard a clunking noise i thought was a loose pick up bed (shortly after driving on the highway at legal but high speed coming home from work). Stopped and noted my truck frame had broken in two places over the rear axel and gas tank area. The broken side of the frame was just sitting loosely on the l rear leaf springs. Luckily i stopped to check the pickup bed. I could have been involved in a serious accident or even killed or what's worse could have lost control and hurt someone else. I know toyota has had significant frame quality control issues with these model tacomas in the past. I did have a frame check in dec. 2010 on a recall notice and it was fine. Was told by the dealership no further action was needed. Now i find after talking to toyota corporate, the frame should have been undercoated at that time. (they claim to have sent 5 letters advising me of this.none of which i received, and i am the original owner at the same address for the past 16 years). Looking at the internet forms concerning tacomas, i am not the only one to have been given this cock and bull story. Why would i have not taken the truck in for protective undercoating if informed by toyota after all ready responding to a recall inspection only a few weeks earlier?. This is a potentially dangerous situation and could cause catastrophic problems. I think toyota corp is directly responsible for this situation by originally installing defective frames then not following through on recalls or service bulletins properly and actually stone walling owners calling with complaints about the defective frames with an extended 15 year warranty.

*nlm

Ongoing rusty deterioration of frame.have had sections cut out and plates welded3x.purchased in 2003. Same dealer claims recall sent. Not received by me.have had other rust problems with toyotas, and had responded to same. This was to be my last vehicle as i am 77, on ss, drive less than 5,000mpy, truck has more than enough major repair free life to out live me!have been advised by my garage not to drive-cannot go onto the lift anymore!has been beyond repair for years-won't pass state inspection. Am forced to buy another, which i can ill afford.here is repair record.2/27/2015-frame rail repair $500.at 2016 inspection original dealer quoted $1,000 to repair frame, stated recall had been sent and ignored, and got very beligerentinitally and during subsequent phone calls.repair locally $800.again $700 in2017. By 2018 shock mounts were rusted off and shocks removed.has not passed inspection since.still country driving not more than 20 mi. Everything running fine-no problems.would expect another 100,000 needing no more than a clutch and another timing belt. I was even willing to spent $13,000+for a new frame only to discover by vin that complete frame was no longer available.if you would check out tacomaworld website, thousands of complaints.re: having to junk truck that has many miles yet to run. I know toyota sued frame manufacturer.has 'wiped their hands' of the entire affair;so i don't really expect anything to come of this.being an air force vet on ss and ptsd disability i considered appealing to toyota directly but felt it a waste of time.appeal going into trash unopened!add my complaint to the thousands of us loyal toyota buyers who have in essence eaten their vehicles!!

Airbag system failurebroken leaf springs.

No known events leading to the failure.progressive, successive failure of bolts holding left front wheel assembly and suspension arm to the truck.this caused separation of mentioned member from the vehicle resulting in total loss of control and overturning of said vehicle.the vehicle was a total loss as a result of the incident.

My wife & i were traveling into bakersfield, (we're from arvin, ca) along bear mt. Blvd. On sat. Sept. 5, 2009 around 4:00 p.m. At about 60 mph and it became difficult for me to steer. Instead of going on the freeway, i decided to take an alternate rt. I came to a stop and began turning left at approx. 5- 10 mph & the r front tire folded out & the lower ball joint snapped. Luckily no one was hurt. We had to have the truck towed home. I ordered the lower ball joints on line so i could replace them. This is because when i contacted the toyota dealership they informed me that my truck was not one on the recall list for this defective part. I am furious. I believe toyota is liable for my damages. Before this occurred, i heard a few clicking & grinding sounds & thought maybe my power steering was going out. I had no idea it was ball joint failure, or i wouldn't have been driving it. I have my old defective parts. I also have another witness to this incidence besides my wife. He lives across the street from where this occurred & heard the loud boom when the truck hit the ground. I hope you look into this matter, as i would hate for someone else to experience what we did.

Defective rims and tires.

The whole spare tire assembly fell off the tacoma truck.there is a safety recall for this.the problem is this tacoma truck also has totally rotted frame rails (an older, expired safety recall).the big issue is toyota can only offer a date when the actual recall notice left their print facility.i do not recall receiving this notice since it did not come registered mail. Toyota will not honor the old, expired frame rail recall and thus cannot fulfill this active, spare tire recall.both recalls are for the same symptom (excessive road salt corroding parts). Why did the frame rail recall expire when the most-recent spar tire recall is the same symptom??i do not know if anyone has died because my spare tire fell off...that scares me very much.

Three months ago i receivedmy notice about excessivecorrosion of the spare tire carrier lift plate.icalled the localtoyotadealerto schedule the repair, the collision manager had no knowledge about it.icalled againto schedule a fix but wastold that someone willcallmebut ,no one did.toyota ofyork ,pa17402.

My fuel tank is rusted completely through to the point of leaking gas. I know toyota has recalled the frame (replaced) and the spare tire holder (not yet replaced) due to rust. Seems like the whole underside is rusting out.

Toyota dealership refuses to fix safety recalls because of frame rust damage. I never received their short term recall notice on the frame rust and dealership refuses to replace safety recall parts !

The frame at rear spring hangers has rusted throughrear axle separated from frame due to rust

Frame rusted out.toyota will not repair.safety issue.brought vehicle to dealer for spare tire carrier recall and was advised frame was rusted also and they would repair neither rusted frame nor spare tire carrier.complaint filed with virginia attorney general's office on january 21, 2016 and toyota responded to their office on 02/11/2016 saying toyota would not repair vehicle.

My trucks frame is corroded and falling apart. Toyota had a recall out for the frame. Due to previous owner not having chemical compound sprayed on the frame, i am told there is nothing i can do. I have never received anything regarding my trucks unsafe driving condition. I have been to it is not safe to drive this vehicle but toyota is not willing to do anything about it.

Takata recall the chassis of the truck is completely rusted. Does not look safe to drive.

The frame has rotted away can't even drive it.

Frame rot from inside out. Suspension mounting to frame rotted out. Totoya refuses to deal with this and claims the safety recall is expired. How can a recall be expired. Case #1606101548 . Toyota representative very rude and demeaning.

Frame rusted, unsafe to drive. Called toyota and was told recall had expired, never received any recall information. Truck was purchased second hand from toyota dealer.

7/31/2019, i drove my truck to a toyota dealer shop after i noticed the rear of my truck tilting down when loading. Per toyota dealer inspection, its frame 3/4 way rusted through on both sides and very unsafe to drive. And toyota's extended warranty on the frame expired on january 2, 2017. Replacing the frame would cost $24,000, or the truck is just a piece of junk. On the same day 1:20pm, i called toyota customer experience, 800-331-4331, and was told that there was nothing they could do, as i didn't bring it in before the warranty on truck frame expired.7/22/2011, the truck had a frame recall in response to excessive rust and performed corrosion treatment per toyota guideline (not replacement of frame).2/11/2013, the truck was in toyota shop for inspection and didn't have any words regarding the frame.my truck is in great shape, interior and exterior, other than the rust frame, with only 102,000 miles. I like the truck, take good care of it, and intent to drive for a few more years. But i never thought the frame would be an issue even after having a frame recall work done.i feel toyota should still take care of my truck frame, as it has gone bad due to the fact that (1) toyota didn't build it with good quality parts to start with, (2) toyota dealer didn't perform a good quality recall - just patch/painted which didn't prevent from further rusting, and (3) this bad rust must have happened before the 15-year warranty expired; i just over-trusted toyota and over-looked the frame...i have talked to several frame body shops. They are all aware of the toyota tacoma frame problems and think the frame had been rusting a long time ago, while the truck looks/runs great. Replacement of the frame is the only yet costly option to save the truck.i believe there must be many tacoma owners experiencing the same resulted from bad-quality-built truck frames.

I purchased the tacoma 10/9/2013, i noticed some of the recall repairs had not been made by the previous owner, i took it to the dealer, 10/29/2013 for the necessary repairs. I was informed by the service guy, using a hammer, that my frame was crumbling and i would be needing a new frame as well. I called toyota customer service numerous times and all i ever got was, i'm sorry, and how they were well aware of the corrosion problem with the frame on the 2002. The rust problem on my tacoma is so severe, the truck is starting to buckle, no space between the cab and the bed at the top. It is in such bad shape no one will put it on a lift! it will be the complete and single cause for the demise of my truck, and quite possibly myself.i had just bought the truck. I will be driving the tacoma when the frame breaks apart and i will probably die.9/11/17 i wrote james letz, ceo of toyota, and manager of toyota motor engineering and manufacturing, i stated, "i followed the corrosion prevention in the owner's manual. The quality of the frame on the 2002 toyota tacoma is inferior due to inadequate rust protection at the factory."9/28/17 i received a response by phone from grand prairie, tx. He told me there was a recall letter sent out to the owners of 2002 tacomas, informing the owners to check for rusting and corrosion on the frame, and they could bring the truck in for a rust prevention spray; however, it expired 2011. They obviously know how severe the problem is. I told him i was scared, and he answered, "i understand i would be too." he led me to think nothing was going to be done, but it was up to the engineering and manufacturing department, oddly enough, that is mr. Letz!

As a new pre owner of the 2002 toyota tacoma that i had purchased in august 2017. The previous owner have completed all recall per toyota customer care services and my local toyota dealership. What they told me was during the inspection, they spray rust proof on the frame to protect from corrosion. If was lucky that i have brought my truck for services for new tires on 1/30/18. While the mechanic try to left the truck for services, they notice that the frame where rusted and would of fall apart if the left the car up. They called me into the work area and pointed out how dangerous it was. It was barely holding the entire back of the truck together. It rusted more than halfway of the frame that supported the entire back of the bed truck. The mechanic recommendation to contact toyota. And i did but got no where. They are refusing to solve the problem. Q

Excessive unsafe frame rot from inside out. Toyota safety 'recall' offer to fix 'expired'.

Today i saw the truck for sale on craigslist and when i called the owner he said it has 132000 miles but when i got carfax the car have over 250000. The is currently listed on craigs list https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/6184326088.html

I received a interim notice letter from toyota in 2011, stating that the frame had a coating defect. I took it to my local oxmoor toyota dealer in 2011 and they put a wax coating on the frame to stop the frame from rusting more. I received a recall letter on the spare tire assembly and i had oxmoor toyota fix that as well. The assembly was rusting away. This week i was driving down the road (hwy 480) and the truck became very loose in handling. Took the truck home inspected it and found the frame snapped in half on the drivers side rear wheel well.

The vehicle's frame completely rusty to the point that i fear it will break at any time.i recently took it to the mechanic to replace the timing belt and other belts and a lot of the bolts broke when trying to change the belts.i believe this is a manufacturing error.more than likely, the factory used low grade materials which caused the truck to rust a lot faster over time.this is a safety concern.if due to this rust issue, the breaks fail or the frame comes apart this can be dangerous.this is why i am reporting this problem.i called toyota and received a claim number, this claim is under review.please contact me regarding this issue.

I purchased a used toyota tacoma 2002 on 12/16/11 (now with 124k miles). Toyota issued an extended warranty coverage to owners regarding a safety issue & the possibility of frame splitting with steps to take for toyota to cover this issue in a 1x letter they sent out in feb 2012. Toyota sent the letter to the previous owner & not to me (the rightful owner at that time.) i recently found out about this problem from a local tire company that noticed a split in my truck's frame (this issue was never brought to my attention by the local toyota dealer when i had another recall issue taken care of on 5/11/15). I went right to the local toyota dealer and they said the frame must be replaced (which was part of the program that toyota offered in the letter sent to the previous owner, not me' the correct owner at that time). Toyota will not assist me with the repair/fix because they claim they did their job and sent the notice to the owner that they had on file from their resources. I have a copy of my dmv registration showing the registration date, proving that they mailed the letter & repair details to the incorrect owner. I sent a certified letter to the toyota legal department with the details & proof of ownership, which clearly shows i was the rightful owner at the time they mailed the letter. They signed for my letter on 12/21/18. Now it is 3 1/2 months later and i have not yet heard back from them. When i call they offered no assistance, telling me that the legal department can only communicate by mail. Toyota has a major safety issue with the frame that they never informed me about. Now my cherished truck & daily transportation is worth nothing because of toyota's defective frame. This complaint is being issued because toyota should be held accountable for their defective frame and lack of properly notifying me, the correct owner, with the safety issue & repair options.

Truck dash has rattled since shortly after we bought the truck.never has been fixed correctly.also, the cruise control doesn't keep you at consistent speed at all on mountains/hills.if you want to go 55, it will put you up over 60 very quickly and then gradually drop you down to around 55.

The cruise control on the 2002 tacoma pre-runner that i own did not dis-engage when the brakes were hit after going into a skid due to black ice. This caused the vehicle to spin out of control and crash.

While driving 35 mph hood flew open and cracked the windshield.due to no visibility through the windshield.vehicle hit the rear of another vehicle. Windshield was replaced on 7/10/2003.

While driving consumer has to bend too far down to openwindows . Contacted dealer, and the dealer was not willing to do anything.

Vehicle purchased w/ cmpr shell - no boot installed - allows rain wtr to obstruct rear view, greatly reducing visibility, especially at night.

Dt*:the contact stated when the temperature was either cool or cold, the windshield wipers would not activate. This occurred intermittently.the dealership was unable to determine a problem.

Wheel studs stretching and breaking at recommended torque specification. Potential for wheels to break loose from vehicle while driven. Likely to cause serious injury or death to occupants or other vehicles and occupants.

The contactowns a 2002 toyota tacoma. The contact stated while driving at 3 mph, the front driver side wheel disconnected fromthe vehicle without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired.

Was driving down 85 s c from greenville- anderson in passing lane .heard slight noise like in left rear tire at first.sound increased fast to extreme thumping.had to pull over immediately into breakdown lane.looked at tire-----outside wall was completely ripped open showing total rim.if this had been either front tire i would dead now.tire was bought about 2 1/2 yrs ago, twas over 50%,milage was under 20,000 miles

Rear wheel can't be removed from hub.dealer was contacted.dealer stated we beat the wheel off with a sludge hammer.

Several repairs to wheels and tires. Re:steve & kathy mittman*mr the consumer had been to three toyota dealers in performing repairs to the wheels and tires.beaver toyota performed two complete alignments and replaced three wheels that were out of specifications.american toyota has performed a complete alignment, mounted and balanced all the tires on the wheels, prior to replacement by beaver toyota.karl malone had replaced two tires that were found to have excessive run out, as well as mount and balanced all four tires on the new wheels.the manufacturer agreed that this was a defect but declined to replace all five tires and the rims due to sources who stated the tires were within specification.*scc
