On 5/7/13 my toyota tacoma airbag did not deploy, was injured, and was not responsible for accident. Un-insured driver,2008 toyota scion, was cause of accident, and scion's airbag worked. 2008 toyota scion was received by mf auto on 4/4/13, purchased by yuka okuna, insured by geico on april 9, 2013 & re-insured on april 10, 2013 w/all state insurance (policy 4/10 to 10/10?), and police report stated amanda longley owned car & insured by safe auto. Yet insurance companies claim it is 'phantom or ghost driver' and not insured at all- not lawful in state of indiana as proof of insurance is required? it appears bmv records maybe altered after police report- police verified information at scene of accident? additionally, noticed police report stated "safety equipment effective" was noted "yes" for scion & tacoma but my toyota tacoma airbag did not work properly- perceived unsafe product. Lastly, tacoma toyota was in a separate accident in 2004, not my fault (rear ended at around 35-40 mph), and airbag did not deploy- caused a lot of damages and injury. Toyota failed to provide a safe product and is a cause of loss in many ways- too many losses to detail. Toyota was informed in writing but failed to address product safety concerns adequately and appeared more concerned about brand reputation than safety of people? (see phi matrix for some reasons- linked to stock prices/brand/ design /beauty analytics).

Takata recall. I rear ended a vehicle doing 30+ mph which in turn that vehicle hit another and that vehicle hit another. I was concerned that my airbags did not deploy and i wound up hitting my chin on the steering wheel and left elbow hit the windshield. Toyota corporate was notified and an inspector was sent out to my local toyota dealer on 3/12/18 but will not tell me anything until toyota corporate contacts me in 30-45 days. All i would want is the replacement parts and would fix it myself but i'm sure i'm in for a big "let down!".

Another vehicle failed to yield right of way and i t-boned them at 30 mph. Airbag failed to deploy, and florida highway patrol officer was very concerned, as he felt the air bag should have deployed.

Vehicle left roadway and struck object head-on.airbags did not deploy, even though the impact was direct and with enough force to cause vehicle to flip end over end several times.vehicle was totaled.

On feb 2.01 when reviving a new 200l toyota tacoma, the steering wheel was locked (wouldn't turn at all). I got the salesperson who came with me. He jerked the steering wheel hard and if was freed.i asked if that is normal, he responded "it's ok, they all do that."over the years whenever it didn't seem to be right, i remembered the statement "it's ok, they all do that".on sep 8, 2005 in the wall-mart parking lot with 18 cases of bottled water to take to my church for shipment to hurricane katrina victims in biloxi, ms, my ignition key would not turn nor was i able to get the key out of the ignition. I had the vehicle towed, repaired, and picked it up.the local toyota dealership didn't want to hear about my historical problem with the steering/ignition since the day i picked it up new. I mailed them a letter but they totally ignored it. I believe they are being negligent by not dealing with this issue.have there been any recalls or service bulletins related to 2001 toyota tacoma pickups steering column/ignition problems.please let me know.thanks and i hope you all have a nice day.

Intermittently alarm system will not openvehicle .vehicle been in / out of dealer shop on five occasion s,andproblem still reoccurring.feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

The ignition key will not turn all the way off. It will go one notch to the left to alt. And turn the motor off but will not let the key come out. I've been to dealer several times and they don't know the problem. They 1st said it was the key but has proven wrong. I cannot lock the door with the key in the ignition except to use another key.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving various speeds, the vehicle would vibrate. The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While the contact was driving 15-30mph the vehicle suddenly accelerated causing the rpm's to redline. The contact turned the vehicle off in order to stop it from accelerating. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact had the idle air control valve replaced at 29,060 miles.there were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 34000.updated 4/7/2010 the check engine light illuminated. The dealer replaced the mass air flow sensor. Also, the frame had severe rust.updated 08/24/10

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. She took the vehicle into the dealer to inspect the frame, which she had observed was slightly rusted. The dealer stated that the vehicle was thoroughly rusted and would not allow her to drive the vehicle off of the lot. The entire frame was replaced under the manufacturer's warranty enhancement for frame rust perforation on model trucks in severe cold climate areas with high road salt use (nhtsa item number : 10027968: service bulletin number : tcs-08-018). After the repairs were made to the vehicle, she noticed black smoke coming from the exhaust, the vehicle was using more gas than before and she could literally watch the fuel gauge moving closer to empty as she proceeded. The vehicle would not idle properly and was exhibiting a "bucking" gesture as if it was not getting enough fuel. While inspecting the vehicle, a personal mechanic noticed that the 02 sensor was hanging from the vehicle and caused the vehicle to exhibit the failures. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they stated the sensor was in the same place as when she first brought the vehicle. No further repairs were made to the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were approximately 126,000. Updated 4/30/10 the o2 sensor needed to be replaced. Updated 07/15/10.

Consumer received nhtsarecall letter no. 033189000:pick-up trucks, during side impact ncap test (i.e. Lincap test), a flange at the rear end of the double cab body is deformed and interfered with the fuel inlet hose that connects the fuel filler pipe and fuel tank, resulting in damage to the fuel inlet hose.however, the dealership still does not havetheparts available to conduct the recall.*la

I was driving my 2001 toyota tacoma extended cab when another vehicle hit me behind the drivers door and my truck exploded in to flames.i could not get out of the vehicle from the drivers side and had to go through the flames in the cab to get out the passenger side.i suffered burns and was hospitalized in the burn unit.

Our daughter was driving our toyota pick-up when she smelled a gas oder. She immediatly pulled over and called her mother. Her mother insisted that she come home immediatly. Fortunately she was not far from home. Upon her arrival at home dad went outside to see what was the problem. Our neighbor came over and assisted in helping pin point the problem. There was not just a drip but a huge puddle of gas underneath the truck. We discovered a ruptured fuel hose coming from the gas tank. It appears that the plastic tab holding the hose in place chaffed a hole in it. I immediatly came inside and did some research on the internet and also called some local toyota dealerships. What i discovered was that toyota did have a recall on a hose on this vehicle but it was another hose in another location. At that point i ordered a toyota replacement gas hose from our local dealership. After waiting a week for a hose to be shipped, i picked up the part and installed it myself easily. The problem has been fixed and and no other problem since. I am a true toyota fan and presently own two. Toyotas has been in our family for the past 30 years. I typically do not complain but, due to all of the publicity of toyota's safety problems i feel it necessary to report this. Yes, it was an inconvenience, but my real concern is that this doesn't happen to anyone else. Gas was squirting within an inch of a hot exhaust system and could have easily resulted in a fire or an explosion. Thank you for hearing me out.

Consumer believes toyota owes him money for personal items destroyed in the tacoma.consumer states that he has written toyota and they have never answered he wants to get money for personal items destroyed in vehicle fire.**nar*the consumer stated he continues to receive recall notices about the vehicle that was destroyed in a fire.

Upon starting the truck and driving out the driveway, gasoline started spraying all over the hood, the engine compartment and the driveway. There is a high pressure injection hose that goes from the fuel filter to a fitting on the fire wall and back to the gas tank.the plastic clamp that holds this hose up,wore a hole in the hose. Thepart number for the hose assembly that brokeis 2390675040.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, another driver warned him of sparks igniting underneath the vehicle. The contact stopped the vehicle and noticed the rear of the fuel tank bracket had fractured due to corrosion. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The contact removed the bracket from the fuel tank. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

While driving on rt 24 north of nashville, the hood on our 2001 toyota tacoma flew completely open.the result was a smashed front windshield, a dented cab roof and a severely bent hood.the vehicle was able to be pulled over without anyone being hurt or killed.we replaced the windshield and tied down the hood.

Toyota tacoma 4 door; rear door locks not working. Stays locked, and cannot open doors.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic because the emergency brake cable was damaged. When the vehicle was mounted onto the lift, the frame fractured in between the cabin and the bed of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was too old and all recalls had expired. The approximate failure mileage was 300,000.

Emergency brake failure, the emergency brake on my 2001 toyota tacoma has seized for a second time. With the emergency brake seized it is not possible to operate the emergency brake. The design of the emergency braking system allows the system to seize due to corrosion at the location where the actuating lever meets the mounting block. I have previously had this repaired by the toyota dealer at a cost of $350 (2 mounting blocks@ $90.00 each and 1 hour labor per side to remove and replace mounting blocks and actuating lever(s). The protective rubber boot which should protect the joint between the lever and mounting block is located approx 1/8" from the joint, which provides no meaningful protection from water and salt i.e. Corrosion. Once a small amount of corrosion occurs the joint seizes and renders the emergency brake unusable.

My 2001 toyota tacoma has dealer verified frame rust perforation. When the first letter from toyota came to my door in early 2009 i went directly to my local dealer who did not know anything about this issue and stated to me that they would get back to me with more information as it became available to them.several months later, i was told by the dealer that wisconsin was asking toyota to provide more data on the propose solutions to this issue and had not approved toyota to make any repairs. I was also told that they would contact me when i could get my truck inspected. Many more months passed and finally i had enough and called toyota direct. I was assigned a case manager and she said she would help me get my truck inspected. This finally happened on april 27, 2010.now they tell myonly option is a replacement frame, which to me is not acceptable. Then lucky 2001 owners who were able to get quick inspections were offered the buy back option. In various forums the ones with the replacement frames are seeing issues with leaking gas tanks, and up charges for incidental items.

While descending a moderately steep dirt road we experienced a total failure of the hydraulic and emergency braking systems. Vehicle was coasted to a stop on a flat area of road. After approximately 45 minutes brake system slowly returned to normal operation. Local dealer inspection revealed no apparent cause for the malfunction and no suggestion as to what possibly could have caused both brake systems to fail. No evidence of brake overheating or fatigue, no fluid leaks or stored computer fault codes. Dealer suggestion, "drive it till it fails again and bring it back".

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While operating the vehicle, a loud noise was present coming from the rear end. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rear axle and drive train had no oil present, which caused the failure to occur. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 152,000.

My tacoma has been in a couple times for timing belt replacement and has been inspected for rust but nothing was ever done or said about it needing anything done. While driving down the street i noticed that when i slowed down my lifted and when i accelerated my bed lowered. I pulled off to find that my frames has rusted apart in front of rear leaf spring. Toyota corporate was called and they said nothing can be done?

While driving heard a skidding sound, look under truck lost trd plates, rotted became lose and fell.under carriage corroded.

Loud noise coming from the rear end. It appears the differential case rotted out leaving the rear end with no gear fluid. When they replaced the frame (as it rotted out to)... They shoud have replaced the differential housing. Lucky this happen around town and not on the highway. I can imagine what would have happened if the differential blew apart at high speed (with flying metal and no control of acceleration if needed to avoid or cause an accident). I called toyota car care and they said they would go in half on the repair and get back to me in a few days with the details. They didn't... I called them a few days later and they said they couldn't help me. Looked to be a +/- $2,000 repair.

Rusty leaky diff problem the oil leaks constantly.i called the toyota dealer and they said there is no recall and nothing they will do about it at this time.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle differential was completely corroded and leaking oil. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vin was not available. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 76,000.

2001 tacoma 2 wheel drive 4 door pre runner. Have had a horrible "clunk when i realease brakes. The wholetruck jerks and the transmission shift lever jumps about 3 inches. Took it to precision toyota in tucson and was told it is called axle wrap. I did some reasearch on axle wrap and basically it is worn out rear springs. The only thing i have carried in the truck heavy is my 200 lb. Motorcycle. The truck has high mileage and is all interstate driving. The problem is getting worse and have seen another complaint here. I am worried what kind of damage it is doing to the whole drive train. What's going to "snap"?

File #200408021294. Customer (kim reamer) 07/27/2004 07:50 am i have a 2001 toyota tacoma 4 x 4. It has an issue when the brakes are released you would feel a jolt or a slight push from the drive trane area. I have read up on this and it is also known as engine wrap where the energy gets stored up in the transmission and the release is when the breaks are released from a stop. It feels like you are hit in the rear end by another vehicle. You somtimes here a slight thud. These symptoms do not happen all the time but quite often. Per a conversation with another toyota tacoma owner he stated that toyota is aware of this and has a repair directive out. I am sending this to verify that information as my dealer state he felt there was nothing wrong with my toy after taking it for a drive with me in it. Please note i pointed it out once but he said it is normal. Normal it is notservice response:russ swanson:we met and went on a road test together when you were last here on july 21.our best interest is in finding any abnormalities and correcting them.if this condition worsens to the point where there is an abnormality, it will be our pleasure to correct it.at this point, any attempt at corrective action would be counterproductive. Russ swansonkool toyotamy response:when the vehicle was road tested with you in it, i only noticed the vehicle do it once which was slight to with what it does.as i stated it happed about 4 times driving in to work and heard it thumb on all 4 cases.the push or action from letting the break off once stopped was felt 4 times as well.this is not normal under any driving conditions and concerns me that you say so.this would be construed as abnormal.there a repair directive out there regarding this complaint.but toyota is failing to correct the issue to say it is norma.then why a repair directive?.please address my concerns.thank you.kim r. Reamer .

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance, and during the repair they discovered that the rear differential housing was leaking and exhibited substantial rust. The technician stated that the failure was a common defect. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000. Updated 02/17/11*ljupdated 05/11/11

Makes a clanking sound in driveshaft when shifting.reported this to dealership proceeded to add gear oil to rearend .this helped some but didnt stop noise . Contacted charlies again and they said they would drop and pack driveshaft to eliminate sound. I believe there is a defect in the driveshaft and im afraid that the end result could be dangerous. Ive contacted their customer service dept. And was told a new drive shaft was out of the question and they would only pack the old one to resolve the problem.i believe packing the driveshaftwould only be a bandaid on a potentially dangerous problem. Are you aware of similar problems with other toyota tacoma driveshafts?

Three bolts that holddriveshaftcame out almost all the way . Contacted dealer, and dealer has fixedproblem.front drive shaft bolts were not installed correctly at factory.

The vehicle had been to the dealership several times to correct a defect in the transmission when consumer would make an attempt to stop, the dealer informed consumer the condition was due to a slip joint in the drive shaft which needed to be lubricated and was a normal maintenance issue, but also stated the condition was due to the drive shaft seizing up,the shocks and rear brakes was replaced.

2001 toyota tacoma replaced rear axle bearing twice already truck has less 90000 miles. In both incidents it has ruined the internal parts of the axles causing damage to the carrier case. I bought a 3 rd trd axle at a wrecking yard to find the same problem in that axle. I was fortunate i was not involved in a accident. The rear axle could of locked up on the highway causinga serious accident or death related to axle failure.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 70 mph a noise was heard that gradually became louder.without warning, the wheels locked up.the vehicle was maneuvered off the road. It was towed to an independent repair shop where it was determined the transfer case locked up and needed to be replaced.there was no sin of a leak prior to the failure. Updated 08//25/06.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the thread of the front driver's side seat belt was wearing excessively and unraveling. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis. The technician stated that the seat belt would have to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

Consumer states the passenger side seat belt does not function properly and has been replaced 3x already.the belt locks up and tightens on passenger whenever vehicle travels over a bump in the road. Ts

Drivers side seatbelt would not retract all the way, dealer replaced seatbelt and it still would not work correctly.

Drivers side seatbelt would not retract all the way, dealer replaced seatbelt and it still would not work correctly.

The foam in the headrest of both the driver and passenger seats has deteriorated to the point that the metal bar underneath is exposed. Neither seats have had seat covers, the vehicle has not been in any wrecks, and the headrests have been used normally. I have been searching for a fix to this problem and this looks to becommon for this generation of toyota trucks. This shouldn't be an issue for a vehicle of this age and is a very dangerous problem for such an important piece of safety equipment.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was involved in a minor rear end crash where the driver and the passenger's head rest became fractured upon impact. The contact was concerned with the head rest fracturing with such a slight impact. A police report was filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 95,000.

The brakes failed due to loss of hydraulic fluid.this occurred suddenly.the steel hydraulic brake line has corroded and ruptured within an inch of where it connects to the brake bias valve near the left rear wheel.upon inspection of the area around the brake bias valve, the bias valve itself, the bolts securing the bias valve, and the brake lines severe corrosion was observed.the inspector who has 35 years of experience working on toyotas regards this corrosion as abnormal for any vehicle of this age.the vehicle's frame was coated with a substance that is supposed to prevent corrosion under a toyotarecall in oct. 2010.this substance was sprayed on the brake line which ruptured as well.the inspector feels that the coating is actually accelerating the corrosion.the inspector observed the coating pealing off of the truck's frame in large sheets.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma sr 5 extended cab. The contact was driving 3-4 mph when the vehicle drove over a road bump and the lower ball joint proceeded to detached from the passenger side front tire. The vehicle then unexpectedly drifted forward three feet. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop where it was confirmed that the lower ball joint detached and needed to be replaced, along with the brake line. The manufacturer was contacted and they confirmed the vin failed to qualify for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number:05v225000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint).the failure and current mileages were 129,660.

I had made a left turn onto freeway entrance ramp, started accelerating to get up to speed.at approximately 30mph there was a loud bang/pop noise and the vehicle front left dropped down.i hung on to try and keep vehicle under control as it took an sharp left hand turn towards a pole.even though the brake pedal went to the floor i was able to some how get the vehicle stopped before the passenger side hit the pole where my 1 year old daughter was riding.i had the truck checked for recalls in late 2008 when i purchased it. The report said ball joint recall was vin # specific and that this truck was not in the vin range. After the incident happened, i called toyota hotline for assistance and even though this is the same condition, and part that is failing on the vehicles in range they said, "that sense the recall is vin specific, there's nothing we can do, and we can't just add a vehicle to the recall".so, now i'm stuck with a wrecked vehicle, but very thankful that i didn't hit the pole where my daughter was sitting.this needs to be addressed and all tacoma's that contain this style ball joint be fixed before some one does get killed.

Rust seems to be coming off by the handfuls and pieces thick enough that i am concerned.i looked under my truck and among other things, metal lines (brake, steering, not sure), the gas tank, and steering linkage became my biggest concern.by the thickness of rust i have gotten from my vehicle i am certain it is not surface rust.how much will something rust before it becomes a failure, especially with a line under pressure such as brake lines?the last time i filled up i noticed gas leaking on the concrete.i am not sure if it is coming from the tank itself or not.

While driving heard a skidding sound, look under truck lost trd plates, rotted became lose and fell.under carriage corroded.

Our 2001 toyota tacoma 4wd double cab (with 143,000 miles and excellent condition) abs control unit failed sometimes in early jan 2020. After we searched for replacement part on toyota dealers' websites, they showed "this product is no longer available." our shop searched and was told by toyota dealers the same thing. I contacted dealers and they said nothing they could do but to contact toyota motor north america in plano, texas. We along with our shop searched for used/recycled part across america. We found one from oregon but it did not work after installation. March 17, 2020, we contacted toyota in plano, texas, with a letter to chris nielsen, executive vice president of products support & chief quality officer, about this abs control unit with a "safety issue" as my family and 10 of thousands of other toyota owners who had stuck or have been stuck with this "safety issue." toyota responded march 27, 30, 31, april 6, 8, but refused to address the "safety issue." finally, on april 9, toyota said there was nothing they could do. When i asked if we, along with thousand of other toyota owners are stuck with this "safety issue"? toyota responded by saying we got there phone number and address if we have other questions. Meanwhile, on april 3, 2020, we found a second unit, but it again failed after 2 months. These are expensive units even a used one and it was very expensive to install and to uninstall.most importantly, we and thousand of other toyota owners across america are stuck with this "safety issue" because no part was available anywhere within us. It is not just 2001 as other years used the same part. Toyota knew long ago and decided not to produce them anymore and that is why people across america are stuck with this, known or unknown. I would not be surprised if there have been fatalities involved this abs control unit but no one knew about it.

At speed above 60 mph ,while the cruise control is on brake pedal is very hard and no response, and all the time brake is week at speed above 30mph.very dangerous.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the brakes would not respond causing him to crash into the rear of another vehicle. The passenger in the second vehicle sustained neck and back injuries although the contact was not injured. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis. The mechanic stated that the brakes had failed because the strut and shock had dismounted from the vehicle due to severe rust on the driver's side under carriage. The vehicle was included in a manufacturer's recall where the under carriage was treated with a anti-corrosion coating. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the recall had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.

Dt: the contact stated there was a toyota recall on 2004-2004 toyota tacomasregarding the frontal ball joints.the consumer has a 2001 toyota tacoma which did not fall under the recall campaign, but the consumer had to replace both front ball jointson june 8, 2004.there was a vibration and a rubbing noise coming from the front end ofvehicle.this was the same problem that was statedin the recall.the consumer contacted the manufacturer; they opened a case and did provide the consumer with case number 200508100951. The rotors and pads were replaced.

The brake and accelerator pedal was designed too close together, consumer stated when he went to press the brake he also pressed the accelerator pedal.ph

There has been no incident as of yet.the truck was taken to the dealership after we went to have the brakes fixed and were told that the frame of the truck was rusting through.the dealer informed us that the recall on our truck would not be put through for another 30 days. And that our truck was safe to drive.how ever i feel that it is unsafe to drive since you can put your hand through the frame where it has rusted.this is our only vehicle and we cannot afford to purchase another at this time.the truck is a 2001 and this is 2008, this truck is used for daily needs and general riding.

When turning the steering wheel from straight ahead to left or right, i experience difficulty turning the wheel about half way through the turn in either direction. The steering wheel does not return to center without effort. This happens when moving or standing still and seems to vary in intensity. Online research indicates a defective steering intermediate shaft.

Difficulty steering, lost control of vehicle, vehicle rolled over several times

The driver side front ball joint failed while driving at 50 mph on a smooth surfaces state road.the wheel fell off of the control arm and sent my vehicle sliding down the road. Pictures are attached. This issue has been recognized in a similar recall of 4x4 vehicles of the same make and model. The action number of that recall is nhtsa#: ea 04024.i am hoping to get my vin added as an amendment to they recall to fix the vehicle and make it safe to drive.thank you for the help.

After being driven on the highway approximately 60 miles, the 2001 toyota tacoma truck was being backed into the driveway when steering suddenly locked. Upon inspection, it was determined that the front passenger wheel was no longer attached to the car. The lower ball joint had failed. I determined that toyota issued a recall for my vehicle model and year (nhtsa campaign number: 05v225000) for this issue, with the following consequence: the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing loss of steering control and a crash could occur. It seems that our vehicle experienced this issue for which vehicles were recalled by toyota. However, when i called toyota, i was told that our vin was not included in the recall and that toyota was not willing to do anything. We had to spend the money and time to fix the failed ball joint and are considering replacing the driver side ball joint prophylactically as we no longer trust the wheels to remain on our truck. I have never seen a wheel come off a car. If the wheel had disengaged from our car 2 minutes prior, when the vehicle was moving at highway speeds, the consequences could have been severe. I am very disappointed that toyota is not including our car in the recall - even though the exact same issue for which the recall was issued (for our vehicle model and year) occurred on our car. If the accident had happened at high speeds, someone would have died and a lawyer would be contacting toyota and nhtsa. Perhaps the recall needs to be expanded!

The frame on my toyota tacoma has extensive rust. Toyota has recalled vehicles with rusted frames for the years 1995 to 2000.the same thing is happening to newer vehicles and the danger is still the same. Rust keeps getting worse and soon it will be a safety hazard.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While driving 50 mph, the steering wheel shook and the vehicle swayed. The failure occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. I see that my frame is cracking. So i looked it up. And found multiple recalls on the tuck. I noticed that i have a very sloppy steering wheel. It said that was a recall too. I'm don't no if previous owner had anything recalled.

My wife recently had a wreck, she was going 45 mph, the truck went off the road, crossing over center line, after making impact with the dirt with the front end of the truck, the truck lost it's steering, from there the truck flipped 5 times on it's side, it finally came to rest on it's side, 5 feet away from a house.she had to be cut from the truck. Her l2 exploded in her back, she's now having to learn how to walk again among other things from extreme nerve damage. She just recently left the hospital/rehabilitation from an extended stay.still upset about not knowing what caused the wreck, we decided to look up the truck to see if there had ever been a recall dealing with what exactly happened in her wreck, this is when we found out about the lower ball-joint failing causing the actions of loss of steering, accidents, and accidents with flipping. An investigation has yet to be done on the truck, we're hoping this complaint will inspire an investigation, butalso educate anyone with this year and make of truck, that this is what could happen possibly to anyone.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while reversing and attempting to park at approximately 1 mph, the front driver's wheel made slight contact with the curb. As a result, the contact lost control of the steering. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the driver's side inner and outer tie rod connection tread was corroded and fractured. The contact replaced the driver's side inner and outer tie rod himself. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000. The vin was unavailable.

Severe shimmy when driving, and swaying to either side. I then took the truck to toyota where they found out that the entire steering control system is corroded to the point that the vehicle can loose control at any time. I will be forced to change the yoke and eventually the rack and pinion.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact was driving approximately 55 mph and experienced a complete loss of power steering assist. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road where the engine was turned off. The contact inspected under the hood and noticed that the power steering reservoir was empty. He then dispensed power steering fluid to the proper level. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who informed the contact that the rack and pinion would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired by an independent auto mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 215,000.

Truck 'wanders' and won't track straight without continuous correction with the steering wheel.especially bad when hitting bumps or on 'rain grooves' or other uneven surfaces.difficult to maintain lane discipline and especially scary in construction zones with narrow lanes and concrete dividers nearby.had front end aligned (no help), new tires put on (no help), new shocks installed (no help), tires balanced (nicer ride, but still 'wandered'), front end aligned again (minor improvement) and finally some new tires (again...no help.)there is 'play' in the steering wheel and there is a recall and a tsb from toyota for this year and model truck for 'worn lower ball joints'.but when inquiring with two different dealers, i was told both times that "my" truck was not affected.it sure feels affected!

My 2001 toyota tacoma was involved in a accident. At the trial the accident reconstruction person said he could not understand why the crash happened that it looked like some one hadyanked the wheel very hard. The trial was for manslaughter and it took place before the recall. The truck was never inspected by a mechanic. I feel this was the cause for the accident.

Upon making a turn into my driveway the lower left(drivers side) ball joint seperated from the knuckle causing loss of steering.this in turn made the front wheel fall into the vehicle.

I have identified a discrepancy with the 2001 toyota tacoma 4wd steering system.there is a looseness in the steering and upon investigation i found that the slip joit in the collapsible steering shaft is present.there is a hexagonal slip joint that has shown to be a typical problem with these trucks.repair is not possible without defeating the collapsing function of the shaft.this problem makes the vehicle difficult to drive precisely.toyota should provide retrofit shafts to the owners.

In 2007 i noticed the frame on my 2001 toyota tacoma double cab limited four wheel drive was rusting badly.i notified the gault toyota dealership where i buy all my vehicles about the problem and they stated they would monitor the rusting issue.on 01/02/2008 i had my vehicle in for an oil change and they advised my the frame of my truck was rusted through.they are now telling me that there was a buy back program for the rusted framed vehicles from 1990's to the year 2000.i have done some research and had found a number of trucks like mineyear 2001 and newer are also rushing out.i was told by gault toyota the toyota co. Is looking at each individual case and they are more likely are going to replace the frame and it probably would not be bought back like the older models were.i feel this frame swap could cause me more problems and more money loss.i do not feel it is fair that toyota is not giving the owners of the newer vehicles the option to have the vehicles bought back. This is a problem that needs to be addressed!

Toyota has issued a "customer service" program, whereby they are buying back toyota tacoma pickup truck at 150% of the kelley blue book value.this program is only for 1995-2000 vehicles with significant perforated (rusted) frames.i am the original owner of a 2001 tacoma, built in 2000.my frame is rusted straight through and is only 7 years old.my dealer has stated that it is unsafe.i contacted the dealer as well as corporate directly.they are doing nothing to support owners.no repairs, no buyback.i was told today that "individuals living in new england" should expect this.i believe strongly that the implied warranty extends beyond that statement.there are thousands of tacomas out there not being covered by this program.we are caught between the new buyback program, and the original 5 year warranty.this is wrong.

My 2001 toyota tacoma frame is rusted right through. I contacted my local toyota dealer about this issue and they told me there is a recall on 95-00 tacomas. Mine is an 01 but assembled in 09/00. They said my tacoma doesn't fall into the recall category. I paid out of my own pocket to have the rust test performed on my truck, the dealership told me that my frame is in worse condition than some of the 95-00 that they have been taking back on recall. Then the went on to say my truck will not pass a state inspection and was unsafe to be on the road. 95-00 owners are getting 1.5% of the kkb value. I expect toyota to do the same for me seeing mine failed rust test as well.

2001 toyota tacoma frame rusted through and verified by local dealership.toyota is buying back up to 2000 year models but 2001 models are excluded.when the frame is rusted through, regardless of the year, this is a serious safety issue that the national highway transportation safety administration needs to address with toyota corporation.arbitrarily selecting the years and last vehicle identification number toyota will cover in the buy-back program is ridiculous as this rust issue is bigger than what toyota has anticipated.we filed a claim with toyota they said our vehicle did not qualify for the 150% buy back, however they would buy it back for the current retail value.our truck was built in september 2000 (qualified there), but the vin number was 4,096 past the cut-off (didn't qualify there).toyota builds 3,500 tacomas per week.what makes them think that there weren't some bad frames still in their inventory at the time our truck was built.some 2001 tacoma owners have reported that toyota has taken their truck away from them (after inspection) and have held it for several months and won't give it back to the owners and are only offering retail for a settlement.2001 tacoma owners have no choice...accept the current retail price we have offered you because you won't get your truck back.2000 tacoma owners...here is 150% of the retail value and we'll take that rust bucket off your hands.

Rusty leaky diff problem the oil leaks constantly.i called the toyota dealer and they said there is no recall and nothing they will do about it at this time.

2001 toyota tacoma frame structure is falling apart before its time. Even if they install a new frame it will cost to much money to replace parts to other components not under warranty.the truck would loose its value if the frame has to be replaced. Why are we letting toyota get away with this?

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While the vehicle was being serviced for the tires, the technician noticed that the entire subframe was corroded. The vehicle was taken to chester berg toyota (705 paul bunyan dr ne, bemidji, mn 56601, phone: (218) 444-3040) where it was diagnosed that rust preparation was found and the frame was corroded. I frequently check the stability of the spare tire that is stored on the underside exterior of the bed. Recently i noticed that the tire was loose and moving back and forth. This prompted me to lower the tire by using the provided crank handle. After it was lowered to the ground i was shocked to see that the retaining bracket and cable spring were severely rusted. I felt that this could pose a potential safety hazard to me while operating the vehicle on the highway if that bracket fails. It could possibly cause the vehicle to roll over and the tire to fly off and cause danger to other motorists. I promptly removed the spare tire from the vehicle and went to my local toyota dealer. They seemed to look past the safety hazard it poses and were more interested in charging me ore $600.00 to install a new retaining bracket. I inquired to the service consultant as to why this problem was not brought addressed to me when my truck was in there a few months earlier for the frame rust perforation recall. He replied that if they notice any issues they present the customer with a list of recommendations. At that time they had the entire cab and chassis off to install a brand new frame. I can't imagine how something as crucial as this potential deadly problem could go undetected. I recently spoke with 2 individuals who had personal experiences pertaining to this issue. One witnessed a deadly rollover due to this problem and the other had his spare fall off and roll down the road. I feel this issue should be presented to the proper officials and action should be taken soon. I hope to hear from you regarding this serious issue.thank you. The frame has corrosion.the local toyota dealership informed me they would not repair this item.they said the only remedy was a frame under coating but that this offer had expired.this is the same issue that was discovered on countless other toyota trucks.i do not understand why this item is not a required repair.this truck has been kept in excellent shape.the problem is due to a condition beyond my control.the truck was stationary when the corrosion was found.this truck was also found to have a corroded spare tire holder, which is currently under recall.i believe the frame corrosion should be repaired as well.

I took vehicle in for recall for tire plate replacement because cases have come to light where they rust and fall out along with tires. At the shop the mechanic determine the vehicle is dangerous for driving and they were unable to lift truck to replace plate because chassis is no longer good because of rust and its rusted out; no stability. They also advised toyota has a recall for chassis and its also on the website nhtsa recall # 12v542 and manufacture recall # cov where they will replace , correct or buy back vehicle. I called toyota and they stated its not a recall its only a campaign and they are not able to assist my vehicle even though it its a recall. I spoke to crystal from toyota at 800-331-4331 case # 1505272075. Please assist i now have a perfect vehicle that is no longer good at all.

I noticed my 2001 toyota tacoma making odd noises while driving. I decided to have my mechanic take a look at it from the bottom of truck: he saw and took pictures of the observable extensive rusted/corrosion and perforated areas on the frame/chassis of the truck and said it was a good idea to take it to dealership since there has been a settlement lawsuit for defects on toyota tacoma's that where not treated well enough with the rust inhibitor spray. I took my tacoma to the dealershipwhere i purchased it originally and they said exactly what my mechanic had already told me about the rusted and perforated areas on the frame/chassis and stated that the chassis/frame has an advanced corrosion/ rust damages to the point of the frame being fractured or broken in half if the problem continues, whereas it's very dangerous to continue driving the truck. I was never notified of this manufacturer defect on the rusty frames and now am considering further into hiring an attorney regarding my 2001 toyota tacoma. This is a serious safety hazard for me and my loved ones and i beleive it's inconsiderate and shaming on toyota to not have one single recall information on 2001 toyota tacoma's. I hope i can get answers soon in regards to this problem and will due what's necessary to have toyota respond to my issue. I have already called them 4months ago and they stated i had to first file this complaint on this website in order to proceed to the next steps.

Frame is severely rusted (just noticed), spare tire can't be removed, and the hand brake cable from center cab to rear wheels is frozen

Last year, 2015, ireceived a recall notice from toyota concerning an issue with the spare tire hanger. I went to the toyota recall web page and typed in my vin, two recalls were outstanding, the spare tire and the frame. I contacted toyota concerning the frame recall and was told that the frame recall had been closed. I informed the toyota rep that i never received a recall notice for a frame issue. She stated that the noticed had been sent and returned due to incorrect address. Toyota than resent the notice to the correct address based on 911 changing my address from 132 center st, to 338 center st. I than told the rep. That i do not understand how toyota could close out a recall which is a major safety issue and asked to speak to someone else. Long story short i was told the recall had ended and there was nothing toyota would do to correct the issue. Afterwards i crawled under my truck and looked at the frame and did not notice any rusted out areas. On monday november 7, 2016 as i was driving to work i lost the brakes. I was able to return home as the brake failure occurred at the end of the street i live on. I crawled under the truck to see if i could locate thedamaged brake line. I found an area covered with brake fluid and determined the line had failed. While i was under the truck, i noticed the frame had rusted through just in front of the passenger side rear leaf spring. This is a definite safety issue which in my opinion could be a matter of life and death. I also noticed on the news this morning that toyota once again has made a multi billion settlement due to frame rust issues on their 2005 to 2010 toyota. I want toyota held responsible for not repairing and of replacing the damage they know exists on my truck!!

My frame has rotted away leaving the rear end hanging on a frame disappearing!

I purchased a used 2001 toyota tacoma and within 6 months noticed that the frame was rusting through.i learned in 2013 that there was a recall for the frame.i took the vehicle to the dealership and was told that they would replace the frame. A few days later, i was informed that they would not be doing this because i had not taken the vehicle in for rust protection.i called toyota directly and was informed that i should have received four notices pertaining to this recall, however toyota did not have the correct name in their database, and thus i did not receive the notices.if i had received them and taken the vehicle for the treatment, the frame would have been warranted for fifteen years.the vehicle was transferred into my name immediately after purchase, and my name should have appeared in toyota's database.the vehicle is unsafe to drive, and i feel toyota should either replace the frame or buy the vehicle back from me, as it has from other owners.

Took truck to garage to have tuned up and inspected.the technician informed us that there was hole in right rear frame and the whole frame is rusting. Apparently this is an ongoing issue with many toyota trucks built in 01.shaking my head toyota. We bought a toyota for the quality of vehicles but they forgot to put the quality in this vehicle.

While i was driving the passenger side wheel completely buckled under the truck. Luckily,i was only driving 15 mph. Had this broken while i was on the interstate,i would have been injured or injured someone else. As a result, the mechanic found that both ball joints were bad so both were replaced.the frame is completely rusted out and the spare tire cannot be removed.no notice was ever given to us or the previous owner by toyota, regarding the problems stated above.

2001 toyota truck - when an auto company finds a product defect, a recall is ordered & the defect fixed at company cost. No one blames the salesman, repairman, dealership, etcif the auto company doesn't address the defect, it loses its reputation & its business goes away.however there is a terrible prejudice when my vehicle has the exact same defect and i am being treated differently than other owners. I purchased a 2001 truck it has been garage kept, detailed and hand waxed twice a year and only has 87k miles. Your safety defect of a bad box frame resulted in a recall. The 2000 truck owners with the same issue are being offered a deal of 150% to return the truck. I am not being offered the same deal ' however my truck has the same safety defect. I would like my case reviewed, resulting in the same offer as the 2000 owners.the program should include my 2001 truck it has a safety defect (rusted box frame).

I see that my frame is cracking. So i looked it up. And found multiple recalls on the tuck. I noticed that i have a very sloppy steering wheel. It said that was a recall too. I'm don't no if previous owner had anything recalled.

Frame of this vehicle has rusted beyond being safe to drive. Vehicle will not pass virginia state inspection. Rust is due to factory manufacturing defect that toyota has acknowledged. I am the third owner of this vehicle and had no way of knowing of any toyota remedies to this situation. I have contacted toyota corporate and they refuse to offer any help. This is an inherit factory defect and age and time should make no difference. There are many of these vehicles still operating on the highways with this defect creating a very dangerous situation.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the frame had extensive rust and corrosion to the point that it could fracture. In addition, battlefield toyota (11013 james monroe hwy, culpeper, va 22701, (540) 317-7800) was notified and a shock absorber was ordered because it was also rusted. The part was replaced. The frame rust and corrosion was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted to verify if the dealer placed a coating on the vehicle years ago due to an unknown recall regarding the structure, but failed to replace the frame. The manufacturer was notified. The vin and failure mileage were not available.

Driving around curve at 5mph and front left wheel broke at ball joint and my truck fell on top of wheel bending my fender.i had to have truck towed and had both ball joints replace, $453 worth of repairs, not having had my fender fixed yet.my truck was man. In 05/01, missing the recall on the same problem by a few months.i'm blessed to have it happen at low speed, no telling what would have happened if it happened on the highway.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while replacing a flat tire, severe rust was noticed on the frame. The entire frame had perforations due to corot ion. The contact also stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer in 2009for an evaluation of the frame and was advised that there was nothing wrong and the corrosion resistant treatment was not needed. In july 2016, the vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the diagnosis was that the vehicle had missed the warranty repair in 2012. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

Frame has extensive rust/corrosion issues, rust has perforated entirely through several areas. I also own a '04 tacoma that i just had the frame replaced on a couple months ago and was covered by toyota under their recall notice, . This is unacceptable. Toyota is well aware that this is a major problem and could very well be a safety hazard. I have been a life long toyota customer and up until now have had total confidence in the company. I'm quite disgusted with the whole thing and a bit disappointed that toyota has not been more proactive in remanding the problem. I was under the truck changing the oil and was horrified to see that the corrosion problem was as bad as my '04 tacoma. I have owned several tacoma's, with many more miles on them and older in age and have never seen corrosion this extensive.

I recently purchased a used 2001 toyota tacoma and noticed it needed to go in for a recall for the spare tire being in need of remounting. I noticed the frame rust was bad. As in fist size holes all down the frame. I contacted the dealership about the recall and mentioned the frame rust and the recall on the frames. I was informed that they wouldnt do anything about the rust. Im now stuck with a very unsafe truck for me and my children to be in and a company that flat out made a mistake and wont own up to it.i will upload detailed photos of the damage later on.

Frame is completely rusted out

Frame is rusted through at rear leaf spring brackethappened prior to 2016 but just noticed when replacing exhaust and muffler

Toyota tacoma 2001 in great shape other than the frame is rusting out.took it to my mechanic for routine maintenance oil change; he saw some heavy corrosion on the frame.in several places, it has eaten through and has perforations.he says it is getting to be unsafe.i just bought this truck about a year ago at a dealership in ohio and was not made aware that this was a huge problem in the 1996-2003 models, but this issue is apparently very common as toyota did not provide acceptable undercoatings for these models.next step is to take it to the toyota dealership and see what they say.at this point, i would take a buyout but would prefer to have the frame/chassis replaced at their expense.i love this truck and use it everyday.very scared to drive it right now and hope they come through to fix their mistake.this should be a public recall since it is a huge safety concern and people should be made aware that this is a time-bomb accident waiting to happen.these trucks are everywhere on the road.thanks

Hi, i just want to express my concern for my vehicle as i love my tacoma and how it drives and works for me in my daily life. As i had took my vehicle in for a recall on my spare tire cable, the technician and service man had told me that in my frame of my vehicle there is a large rusted out hole. Since then, i really haven't felt safe driving my vehicle anywhere as i'm afraid that my frame will break and cause a really bad accident. I've also have had in the past where my dad's vehicle (1998 toyota tacoma) was recalled for the same exact thing (frame issue). As for my vehicle, i am the second owner and my brother was the first. This vehicle has been here in the minnesota weather all its life time. Please do something about this, if not, i will push this forward where i will get some attention to my vehicle, my safety, and others. And plus, i wouldn't want to make this into a legal matter as i love my toyota.

I took my toyota tacoma pick up to signature toyota in benton harbor, michigan for a frame recall and the dealer informed me that it was not recalled and i had letter in hand that said it was. Now in december 14, 2014 i took it back to the same dealer for the spare tire recall and they said that it could not be fixed because i did not have the frame recall fixed and i told them that i had it in there and they told me it was not part of the recall. And they would not fix it and toyota will not fix it earthier. They are telling me that the truck is not safe to drive. I took the truck to jorden toyota for a second opinion. I thought that signature was telling me the truth when in fact they weren't.

I was just informed by my mechanic that my 1001 toyota tacoma was unsafe to drive.the frame at the point where the rear springs attach is completely rusted through and that the rear spring is likely to detach at any time.my toyota tacoma is ready to fold in half due to the extent of frame rust.the mechanic went on to say that the frame rusted from the inside out due to inadequate drain holes.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While driving various speeds, a rattling noise was heard. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the frame was corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The local dealer was not contacted. The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the frame was cracked. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic, who stated that the frame was cracked on both sides near the shackles. The frame was welded but the problem recurred. The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact noticed that the rear passenger wheel was corroded and the subframe underneath the wheel was fractured. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the contact was unaware of what was being diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.

The frame is showing sever signs of corrosion. I have taken the vehicle to the local dealership who have investigated the vehicle 2 times last year and said that there is no issues with the frame but one can see several 4 -5inch rust holes in the frame. I am not sure if the vehicle is safe to drive anymore.

The frame has rusted through right in front of the right rear spring mount. This vehicle was called back by toyota for poor corrosion protection of the frame. They sprayed the outside of the frame with and underscoring but did not treat the inside of the boxed sections of the frame.they did not protect the frame as they led me to believe. They are refusing to correct their mistake. I took the truck back to them when they informed me of the problem to have them correct it, but they did not correct it. Merely covered it up. I'v e contacted both team toyota in langhorne pa and toyota usa. They have both ignored my issue. This frame issue is dangerous and they're left their customers drive unsafe trucks knowing t h e problem exists. They know of the problem , they created the problem and they are putting many lives in danger every day. These vehicles need to be repaired or the owners need to be properly compensated. It's all about their profits. They've put money and doing the right thing in front of lives like mine. Please ask toyota to correct this problem. Thanks for your time.

I took my tacoma to be serviced and when the technician started to lift it into the air, loud creaking was heard and movement of truck bed from truck cab. Technician immediately lowered vehicle and i was told the frame was rusted and truck may not be safe to drive.had truck inspected at an auto body shop and was told frame was a complete loss due to rust and would need to be replaced. This year tacoma was not in the massive recall of rusted frames, but seems like with the number of complaints online, it should be. I'm just thankful that it was found before anything serious had occurred while driving

My 2001 toyota tacoma has 150,000 miles on it. I noticed my frame completely split. I drive almost entirely on paved roads. There was no impact or unusual use in the area of the break.i took it into the toyota dealership immediately and they said there was nothing they could do about it.

My son purchased this vehicle from a private sale.there was a recall on the vehicle for the frames.frame was inspected in 2010 and an undercoating was applied-sealing in the existing rust on the frame.this existing rust has since gotten worse to the point where it is now unsafe and starting to break.we have contacted toyota but they refuse to do anything because the 15 year extension was up in july.we were unaware of this and now the truck my son has only driven for 7 months is now worthless and unsafe.toyota did not properly address the safety issue of this frame back in 2010 and now refuses to fix their mistake. They feel that just because the 15 years is up that they are no longer responsible for the safety of the vehicles they put on the road.please help me tell them that they are still responsible.

I have a 2001 toyota tacoma and the frame is broken in two on the passenger side of the truck and rusted in two on the other side of the truck. The truck is very unsafe to drive and i am learning there was a recall on these trucks for faulty frames. I have also learned that they stopped the recall in 2012 before i owned the truck. How is this going to help me if i bought the truck after the recall is over but the issue just happened? i paid too much for this truck to only get to use it for a short amount of time before the frame fell apart. This is a recall that should never be discontinued, if i was not told of this problem by my mechanic something bad could have happened to my family while driving down the road. I am unsure how the frame broke but i was told about it after i took it to a mechanic to have the brakes worked on. The spot that is broken on the passenger side is not even rusty just broke like it was a weak frame. My mechanic informed me to not even drive it home so i had to have it towed home on a flatbed.

In 2012, i drove my toyota tacoma pickup truck to a local dealer in response to a recall letter. I was responding to a notice that toyota had mailed to me. The recall was for a spare tire carrier that may fall off the frame at highway speeds because of a known corrosion problem. The dealership told me that they could not perform the repair because the vehicle's frame was too badly corroded. The dealership performed a frame inspection, & they told me my vehicle had "failed". The dealership did nothing, except to contact toyota corp. Representatives from toyota have telephoned me twice to say that they will do nothing. The company representatives said that my truck "did not meet the parameters of their program". Since then, i have received three more notices from toyota concerning the faulty spare tire plate. Each time i bring my pickup truck in response to these recall notices, i'm turned away. After doing some research, i discovered how toyota had bought back vehicles like mine because of the faulty steel used to make the frame. My wife and i are both elderly. She has three forms of cancer, and we depend in this vehicle. When my wife and i purchased the tacoma newin 2001, we also purchased a $2,200 extra protection package. We had hoped that toyota would stand behind their product should anything go wrong. They refused. The frame of my vehicle is buckling. It shakes and groans when moving along the road. The dealership & toyota both informed us that our truck is unsafe, & then walked away without offering a remedy. We feel we've been trapped by unjust business practices. For the past three years, everyone involved has refused to help us. Now that the nhtsa is involved, will you help us?[xxx][xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'

I'm writing you because i had my 2001 tacoma inspected for the frame rust recall in 2010. At that time i was told that my truck would be sprayed with an inhibitor to prevent rust. The vehicle frame has since rusted and is most likely unsafe to drive. The spray inhibitor obviously did not work or was applied incorrectly. The shock mount has rusted from the frame while driving on a city street.

Premature extensive frame rust / corrosion.toyota did not notify me of the condition or need to monitor or of 2016 deadline for warranty recall repair or replacement.now they will not even pro-rate costs to fix.

I am unsure when this had happened but the frame on my 2001 toyota tacoma is corroded and broken into 2 pieces in 2 different areas. The place where it is broken is not corroded but just broke. Would like to know if this truck is under a safety issue that toyota should be responsible for or if it is just an expensive paper weight.

Recently, i brought my 2001 toyota tacoma into the dealer in hyannis, ma to address a recall of the spare tire carrier.there was a prior recall/extended warranty on the frame and i asked them to look at that as well.i bought the vehicle in 2013 from the previous owner, who advised me that he had brought the truck into the orleans toyota dealership(in orleans, ma), during the previous recall/extended service period - in may 2011 - when he had received notices, and that he was advised the frame was solid and did not have a problem. According to toyota's records, orleans toyota documented that the frame was checked out and passed their inspection. Now, according to [xxx].at toyota national customer relations dept., the recall/extended service warranty program on the frame then expired later, in sept., 2011. Now, here is the catch-22 that i am confronted with ?? i have been advised by . [xxx] and others, that at the time of the inspection, in may 2011, if the orleans toyota service dept. Had provided a rust preventative coating to the frame, then this vehicle would have had an extended warranty of 15 years on it.again, the previous owner brought the vehicle in as instructed when he had received notification of potential problems.the previous owner does not know why he was not offered the rust prevention coating back in 2011, and was content that the frame was solid, because he had brought it in to orleans toyota, and they had inspected it.i understand the nhtsa currently has 134 open complaints just on this year 2001 tacomas with this problem. I feel strongly that toyota should reconsider and fix the problem, since for whatever reason, it was toyota 's error in not applying the rust prevention coating back in 2011.for toyota now to not stand behind the vehicle based on their error is a poor, and dangerous action on their part.thank you!information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

We recently had our toyota tacoma 2001 brought to a mechanic to fix the alternator & change oil. We were informed that the frame of the body was so rusted it was not safe to drive & that due to the steel used in manufacturing the vehicle it had rusted easily from road salt used in cold climates. Apparently this is a common problem for this year & make of toyota however we were unaware of this. We contacted toyota & they said that any fix to the vehicle was expired. Apparently there is some sort of a reviewfor the tire lift but due to the rust our local toyota dealer says it can not be fixed and there is nothing they can do. We realize this is an older vehicle but it does run well & it seems unfair to lose the use of our truck due to an issue that toyota has known about for many years. The rust to the vehicle frame is so extreme that it was described by our mechanic as looking like "swiss cheese" & that has been years in the making. We are grateful that the alternator went out or we would not have known how unsafe this vehicle is & that no accident occurred due to this condition. It seems wrong to purchase a vehicle & because poor materials were used have no option but to salvage it. I am writing you to see if there is an option that we are unaware of. Thank you for your time.

Frame is rusted through in many places. Unsafe to drive

Took truck for inspection, wouldn't pass because frame is rusted through and right rear shock absorber is unattached because of frame. Mechanic says driving it is unsafe. Toyota had recall i was unaware of for rusted frames, when contacted them they said they could do nothing.

2001 toyota tacoma has severe rust all over the frame of truck. Holes so larger that you can pass a hand through. Toyota had a voluntary program but did not get literature etc. To the owners of the vehicles. They stated program was a 15 year warranty enhancement program and it was supposed to last from the original date of service on the vehicle for 15 years. They claim to have closed the program, but this was open to tacomas all the way through 2004. 15 years after 2004 is 2019. Why they would close the program before the stated 15 years was up is beyond me. I own 3 tacomas. The 1997 model is fine, but one 2001 model's frame looks like swiss cheese and is not drivable. The other 2001 model is very close to being not drivable. We are at a loss as to what to do and toyota isn't backing their word or product.

Excessive frame rust perforation on 1st generation tacomas will cause the frame to break leading to an extremely unsafe condition including handling ability, rollover, lack of impact protection, and possibly loss of life. Key areas are by the rear leaf springs and close to the front sway bar. Toyota did offer an extended warranty on the frame, but there was no mention that the frame was deteriorating from the inside out or that all the frames were manufactured without proper corrosion preventative treatment at dana corp, not just those in the listed northern states.toyota's letter of extended warranty did not list this as a safety issue, nor did it recommend an initial or any followup frame inspection by a qualified toyota mechanic for the non-northern states, nor did it mention the nhtsa as being involved. The letter mentions "a small number of 2001 through 2004 model year tacomas operating in severe cold climate areas with high road salt use..." .all tacoma's in any road-salt state have the issue.many states that do use road salt have not been inspected, ever. When something is under warranty, people tend to keep using things until they break. Under a safety recall, people tend to get the problem fixed quickly. The tacoma frames are not actually "breaking" during the warranty period but they are becoming "defective" during the period. Many people are driving older tacomas and have no idea the truck is about to snap in half. This frame rust issue has not been acknowledged as a safety issue by either toyota or the nhtsa.a quick google search for tacoma frame rust will reveal hundreds/thousands of pictures of perforated and dangerous frames. Interestingly, there was a recall on the tire carrier which suffered from rust as a direct result from the frame rust. The letter clearly states that in the non-effected states, "you do not need to do anything at this time".

The entire frame is corroded and needs to be replaced. Hendrick toyota says the vehicle is safe to drive, but a local body shop says the integrity of the frame is 10-15%. Says it could break at anytime. I purchased in august 2015. The previous owners state they received no recall or notices from toyota on this issue.

The frame has rotted out causing the leaf springs to move and resulting into dry shaft dropping out of place. This in turn, makes the truck undriveable. This happen when trying to drive around town. It begin in october of 2018. We have not driven it since that time.

I bought the truck dec 9,2014 in il. I bought it from a used dealership. Mid jan i noticed the car pulling to the left. I got the tires rotated, lower ball bearings replaced and got an alignment. All a couple weeks apart. Still pulled to the left. I went to rotate the tires again figuring i wore them funny. The frame snapped where the leaf spring mounts to the frame. The frame completely broke. The only thing holding my rear left tire on was the truck bed. On toyota's website you can look for recalls. I typed my vin in and it said the only recall was for the spare tire.i contacted toyota and they opened a case (#1503310201). They told me there was a recall on the frame that had issues with rust. The recall went to 2011. I was told since the previous owner didn't act they would do nothing. My complaint is that the frame broke because of a defect i was unaware of and unable to find out about. It was not a small failure it could have been catastrophic. Anytime a frame fails a life can be lost. This is not a small repair or fix. It is a direct defect to the skeleton of the truck. There is know way to know of this defect without calling and requesting the information. It is not on there website when looking for defects. I believe they are %100 percent at fault for not making this public knowledge. They should be %100 accountable for any accidents or repairs needed because of this major defect in there truck. A ten year limit should be the limit only if they don't expect any of there frames to last that long. When purchasinga new or used truck one would never assume the frame would snap in ten years.i did inspect the frame at the time of purchase. It looked great. Hasa nice undercoat. Purchased in il where they do not use salt on the road. I am the second owner of the truck from the information i was given from the dealer. I do have pictures.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. When the vehicle was taken in for routine maintenance, the technician stated that the frame of the vehicle was severely rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The contact mentioned that the vehicle was included in a prior rust recall, but was unsure of the nhtsa campaign number. I have a 2001 toyota tacoma and had it inspected by toyota rep. And it failed the rot test at first they offered me 100% buyback but i refused because older trucks 95-2000 were getting 150% buyback and that absolutely did not seem fair with me having a newer truck so i refused. And they are only offering frame replacement to the 2001-2005 which scares me to death just thinking about it!!! something has to be done about this frame issue before some innocent person is killed!!!

The tacoma frame rust on my truck is beyond repair. I am putting myself and myfamily in danger every time i drive it. I called toyota corporate office and they basically told me they cannot not do anything for me. Toyota however gave me a case number [xxx] that was about a year ago. The telephone numbers for that is 8003314331. Four months ago i brought the tacoma for a tire carriage recall at our local dealer which it was about to fall off. They took some pictures of the rotted frame and sent them to toyota corporate office. Again the long anticipated wait. I know i am not the only one who is left out.i cannot sell this vehicle because it is dangerous. Please look into this matter for the many customers that have the 2001 -2004 toyota frame rotted and was left out. Thank you. I bought this vehicle used in 2011 and was notified of a recall for frame rust.by the time i got around to scheduling an appt, i was informed the recall had ended.now, however, the frame is severely corroded and is starting to give way at the rear shackle.i feel this vehicle has become a serious hazard to drive due to the frame buckling.if the recall was put into effect, toyota is aware of the problem, and now it has become a serious liability and safety issue.i would like to get this vehicle repaired to the point of making it safe, but feel that i was not given ample opportunity to have this done under the limited time left on the recall when i bought it.the fact that there is a serious issue with the frame construction is evident by the fact that the body has almost no corrosion present.there appears to be a manufacturing issue with the heavy frame steel that should not be corroding like this.there is currently also an active recall for the rear tire carrier - which is related to the same issue.again, this is a serious safety and liability issue that i think toyota is obligated to address before someone is hurt or killed by this problem.contacting toyota does no good, as they refuse to take responsibility to fix the problem.they say this was not a recall but a warranty extension that has now run out.however, there is a severe defect present in the frame that they acknowledged and now refuse to stand behind even though it is a dangerous liability for any vehicles on the road.

I brought my 2001 toyota tacoma for an inspection in january 2020 and discovered the frame was rotted and it is unsafe to drive. I contacted empire toyota service and was told that the campaign to fix this issue expired several years ago and i would have to pay to have this fixed. I was never notified of this campaign nor was my husband who was the previous owner. I have discovered that many other tacoma owners are in the same predicament.this is an expensive fix that i cannot afford. Toyota needs to step up and make this a recall to be fixed regardless of timeframe.

I live in virginia.there was a safety recall for inspection of the truck frame for rust corrosion. At the time vehicle had the recall i was being treated for a mental disability and in mental hospitals.i was not of sound mind or judgment to understand the "recall notice".while having oil changed by the toyota dealer the frame of the truck was noted to have holes in the frame caused by rust. Toyota motor corporation has refused to replace the frame of the truck honoring the recall even though i provided the necessary information from doctors providing documentation of my illness at the time of the recall.on march 14, 2013, the vehicle was taken in for a safety recall for rust of the spare tire carrier; which could fall off causing an accident.the toyota dealer replaced the spare tire carrier consisting of two metal plates with four bolts that was bolted to a defective frame that has holes due to corrosion; also, they replaced supports that runs between the two frame rails; they did not replace the cable nor the rusted part that holds the wheel to the previous assembly parts.this has not fixed the issue because they have only replaced the spare tire carrier plate onto a frame that has holes due to rust that is not safe to drive.i need this vehicle as i am on disability and limited income; i want the frame replaced or a new truck with the same options as i have on the 2001 tacoma.toyota received a 25 million dollar settlement from dana corporation, supplier of the tacoma truck frames, proper antirust preventative was not applied to prevent corrosion, which was a cost saving for one or both companies.from 1995 to 2004 the tacoma trucks have had this problem.by replacing the frame toyota would not be losing any money because they got their money from dana corp supplier of the tacoma frames.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the entire rear subframe was excessively corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was deemed unsafe to drive. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 125,000.

The frame of the truck is rusted away. There is a re-call for repairing the tire mount under the truck. Toyota states they can not fix because of the rust. My case with them is 1411181384. The body and motor are excellent.

We received a recall notice on the vehicle for the frame rusting to quickly.the company's recall notice stated we could take it to the local dealership for the frame to be sprayed with an undercoat.when we took it to a dealership, we were told we had "missed the window of opportunity to have it spray coated."we missed it by one week.two dealerships were not willing to spray the frame of the vehicle.when we received the recall notice, there was no notification we had until a certain date to get this done.many people lead busy lives, working.we missed it by one week.i have written to the toyota co. In ma. And i haven't heard back at all.now i have a vehicle i can not drive, inspect, or register, due to the poor quality when it was manufactured.now the co. Isn't willing to stand behind its product.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 12v542000 (structure: body) however, the dealer denied the recall repair to be performed on the vehicle. The contact was informed that the vehicle could receive the repair but it would be performed outside of the recall remedy. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,200. Parts distribution disconnect.updated 02/23/16*ljthe consumer was advised the vehicle was badly rusted, twisted, and altered;therefore, the recall could not be performed. The vehicle was not safe to drive and should not have passed the stated inspection.

I would like know toyota does not honor recalls on this truck because it is an r title that had front end damage. It will not honor any corrosion recalls (ie.spare tire life plate, excessive rear frame corrosion) however i still receive every recall notification on this vehicle from directly from toyota motors.

Frame rusted through.took it to dealer in 2010 for inspection. Dealer reported no issues.took it to dealer in 2017.dealer would not put it on the lift for fear that it would break in half.toyota assuming no responsibility inspire of the fact of the class action lawsuit for same.they indicated it was past the settlement date.i did bring in in within the deadline in 2010 and they claimed no problem.7years later the truck has been rendered useless.i should mention that the after market trailer hitch has not rusted through and is in good working order.hmmm?i think toyota is not being honest with their customers

Frame is cracked at rear ended on both sides

Fax from senator bernard sanders on behalf of his constituent who has concerns about the rusted frame of her 2001 toyota tacoma.the consumer stated the frame was rusted to the point where it was no longer safe.

The frame my 2001 toyota tacoma was built on is rotting and has a whole in it. Toyota wants to replace the frame, but the cost exceeds the value of truck. I do not think this is legal. The first customer service rep i spoke to said "she would not feel safe in a truck in similar circumstances".

Rusting frame.

Our 2001 toyota tacoma was in for muffler repair when the tech noticed rust on the frame.he said that it was over a 2ft section on one side he could put both hands through and a small section on the other side.since toyota extended their warranty for the same problem on veh yrs95-2000, i think they have acknowledged enough of a prob that they should include other years if newer trucks than that are exhibiting problems.one tech that looked at our truck said that it prob could not be fixed/ welded. We are still getting other estimates and will prob have to have a toyota tech look at it just to have it on the record.

I have a 2001 tacoma that failed frame inspection that was performed by toyota i have had the vehicle for 1 year and basically they are now telling me it is worthless and i believe a danger not only to me but to others on the highway i have softball sized holes in my frame i bought the vehicle for approx. 15,000 that's with taxes and a warranty i purchased at the time now they offered my 10,000 to buy it back while at the same time they are offering 1995 to 2000 owners 150% above full retail?i feel this is unfair it was produced with the same faulty steel that my truck was but they are cutting me off now i am not sure what to do??also there was a carfax reporting frame damage the dealership told me there ase tech's checked it and it was finenow i wonder???

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While the vehicle was undergoing repairs, the mechanic noticed that the frame was rusted. The dealer was not notified. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and opened case number: 1805082285. The failure mileage was 104,000.

The frame is completely rusted out.... Only 60,000 miles.

The frame on my toyota tacoma has extensive rust. Toyota has recalled vehicles with rusted frames for the years 1995 to 2000.the same thing is happening to newer vehicles and the danger is still the same. Rust keeps getting worse and soon it will be a safety hazard.

2001 toyota tacoma with frame rot.the truck has been confiscated as it was unsafe to drive.it has been 3 wks now and toyota can't even give me a completion date.they are still inspecting the vehicle.my rental coverage is only good for 30 days then i need to pay for it.toyota is telling me to be patient as they need to tend to the 1995-2000 customers first as they had issued a warranty extension that did not pertain to my vehicle although its the same frame problem.my frame was corroded and wasn't going to pass inspection nor was the vehicle safe to drive.i am left paying on a vehicle i no longer have in my possession and case manager telling me to be patient!!!!this is unacceptable and toyota needs to cover the rotting frame issue in all of their vehicles since its toyota's problem, not the consumers.please help me!!!!

I have a 2001 toyota tacoma pickup with rust holes in the frame.toyota has offered to buy my truck back but at a fraction of what they offered owners of 1995-2000 leaving me with nothing to trade and nothing to put down on a new vehicle.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While the vehicle was at the dealer to have a corrosion resistance product applied to the frame, the technicians stated the frame was rusted. The manufacturer had a voluntary recall which extended thewarranty for the vehicle to be inspected yearly for corrosion. The dealer stated the frame would have to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and stated the frame would be replaced free of charge but if there were other parts that may bedamaged due to the corrosion that the contact would have to cover the costs. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 109,000.

I own a 2001 toyota tacoma doublecab that i purchased used in 2008. I recently received a letter from toyota stating thati should make an appointment to have the frame checked out for corrosion and rust. I did and it failed inspection. It was perforated on both sides of the frame and had excessive rust. Toyota offered to replace the frame rather than buy the truck back. I do not feel safe in this vehicle anymore. The rear bumper is rotted through, the frame , and by doing research i've found several recalls that i was unaware of. They want to break down the truck to the frame and replace and rebuild it with the same old parts in a dealership, not a manufacturing plant. I was told that toyota does not buy back 2001 tacomas and refuses to negotiate to get this vehicle off the road. This vehicle was not rebuilt when i bought it and think that it is very unfair that i only have one option. This vehicle is unsafe and i will no longer drive it even if they replace the frame. The consumer should have an option to have the vehicle bought back for what it is worth at least.

We purchased a 2001 toyota tacoma new in late 2000.my husband recently realized the frame is almost rusted through on the rear of the vehicle near the gas tank.needless to say, it isn't safe to drive the vehicle until/if it can be fixed.we have viewed and read up on numerous complaints from other tacoma owners and have seen some recalls or notifications to select tacoma owners but not in the state we reside in-mo.we ran into a similar issue with another non-toyota vehicle which only covered hot-weather states.we live in missouri....we have experienced extreme heat and cold during the last few years.it's unreasonable to me that the auto dealers can exclude certain states when it is highly likely customers in those excluded states could experience the same issue.if it's determined to be the same issue owners in other states are facing, why not agree to cover the repair???we plan to do some investigating and calling of our own to see if toyota is going to pay for the repair or at least offer us a reasonable buy back option.we are toyota owners and plan to stay that way depending on how this all turns out. We've always urged others to buy toyota vehicles due to their longevity and reliability....i hope we're not going to be proven wrong on this one.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While driving 65 mph, the contact heard a knocking sound underneath the vehicle. He parked the vehicle, checked underneath, and found that the entire frame was rusted. An independent mechanic inspected the vehicle and recommended that the entire frame be replaced. The frame was rusted to the point where the vehicle was no longer safe to drive. The dealer was not called. The manufacturer was notified and stated that nothing could be done. The failure mileage was 173,000.

I am filing a complaint on a 2001 toyota tacoma with a rusty perforated frame. We have documents and pictures of two holes and flaking on our frame. Many mechanics have told us that our frame was unsafe, but when brought to toyota dealerships we are told that it passes their 2001-2004 rust perforation program and they sent us away. We are left with an unsafe vehicle and we know that it contains perforation in the frame. We have requested to see the toyota regional representative for south texas, but we are getting the run around. We requested to see the rep a month ago and have heard nothing since. We do have a case manager and # but our case keeps getting closed and our case manager doesn't seem to have any authority to accept pictures of the perforation or to contact the regional representative. We would appreciate a face to face talk with a toyota representative who could explain why our half dollar sized perforation does not qualify for further inspection by toyota.

Hi i have a 2001 toyota tacoma in mint condition that has frame rot i took very good care of my truck now toyota said its not safe and i have to take it off the road .i now have to buy a new car i cant affordi only got 7 years out of my truck i could have easily gotten 15i feel this is wrongand toyota should replace my truck.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma.the contact took the vehicle to the shop for routine maintenance and was informed that the front frame was corroded.the manufacturer inspected the vehicle and concluded that due to the severe frame corrosion, the vehicle was a safety hazard on the road.the contact was advised not to drive the vehicle.toyota did not include the 2001 tacoma frame into the recall; therefore, they would not assist with the repair.the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown.the failure mileage was 121,946 and current mileage was 122,946. Updated 10/03/08 updated 10/07/08.

2001 toyota tacoma. Frame corrosion. Toyota motor company has done a voluntary recall from model years 1995-2000. This recall does not include models after 2000. I own a 2001 vehicle with extensive frame corrosion but i'm not eligible for the voluntary recall.

Toyota tacoma 2001 perforated frametoyota refuses to publicly declare these cars are unsafe to drive.my frame is perforated and deemed by the local toyota dealer as unsafe to drive. They admitted this is a "known" problem and i now must accept complete liability if i take the car off the lot.my case manager kevin insisted that "toyota has publicly announced a warranty extension on december 8th, but it is physically impossible to notify all the owners."yet he could not make any reference to where i could find this public announcement.toyota insists that this does not constitute a recall, yet his explanation for a recall was a faulty component that causes a safety issues that will be replaced by the manufacturer.this is precisely what the case manager stated toyota is preparing to do.how can toyota be aware of such a safety hazard and not inform the owners.had i not performed routine maintenance, i would still be commuting 130 miles a day at 65 miles and place others at risk. My dealer stated that there are multiple 2001 tacomas in our small town that have already been found to be unsafeother than nhtsa, what authority exists in the united states that has the ability to publicly announce this safety issues and force toyota to recall these vehicles.

I heard about the toyota recall for frame 'perforation' on 1995-2000 tacoma pickups. I have a 2001 and didn't think to check mine until a friend with the same year/make/model discovered his frame had the same issue. I checked my frame and it is rotted in the exact same place his was. I have opened a case with toyota (#200809250175) and am awaiting response. I am already being met with responses from toyota like "your truck is outside of the service bulletin" and "you are not covered". My truck is newer than the ones being covered and has the same issue. I don't understand why it would not be covered. Since this is an issue with the frame. I am afraid to drive the truck. As failure of the frame could result in serious injury or death to myself or my family.

2001 toyota tacoma with diagnosed rust perforation to frame. Toyota instituted a buyback program for 1995 through 2000 for this issue, but will not honor this commitment to vehicles post this window that experience this same safety issue. Toyota will only replace frames as countermeasure to this issue and will not warrant this teardown/reassy process that will be performed at dealerships (not return to factory for rework) which will leave the consumer open to additional vehicle (safety) concerns and no commitment from toyota that this process will not affect resale value as well. This is an unacceptable and unsafe stance. I have contacted toyota customer care and assigned case number 0904119004 and awaiting feedback.

I, own a 2001 toyota tacoma pick up truck. I bought it new in jan. 2001. I put 93000 miles on it .last june i went to my repair shop to have my leaf springs replaced. Much to my surprise the mechanic told me that my frame was rusted so bad that it could not be repaired. I went to the dealer and presented the problem to them. They told me that the road salt was to blame not toyota! now there is a recall on 1995 to 2000 trucks for the same problem. Since the rust problem i have not driven my truck it is still registered and insured. The people at toyota should look into this problem before one gets in an accident and somebody gets hurt. There are alot of these trucks on the road. Thank you hpl.

The frame on my 2001 toyota tacoma is rusted through in several places.toyota has offered to replace the frame for free, but is offering owners of 1995 - 2000 tacomas to buy their trucks from them for 1.5 x the kelley blue book value, at the "excellent condition" rate regardless of the vehicle's condition.so the owners of the older trucks reap a cash benefit of over 50% of the truck's value, while we owners of 01-04 tacomas end up driving rebuilt vehicles.a toyota rep told me that they're buying the older ones back because they can no longer get replacement frames for them.if that's the case, in a couple of years, owners of trucks like mine will be getting the 150% buyback and the rest of us will be driving our original (rebuilt) trucks with the replacement frames.my local toyota dealer inspected my frame yesterday, told me it failed, and sent me on my way.the vehicle can't be safe - it won't pass the state inspection with holes in the frame.i drive about 12,000 miles a year.the truck has 134,000 miles on it.unless they're building the replacement frames differently, it's possible that the new frame will rot out before the truck wears out otherwise.for a company whose reputation is built on reliability, you'd think they'd want to treat all the owners of the defective vehicles the same.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma.the emergency/parking brake would not engage. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for inspection. The mechanic discovered corrosionon the frame and the brake linkage. He then added that the vehicle was non-repairable. The current and failure mileages were 159000.

Continued from previous complaint- 10235644 -frame issues, 2001 toyota tacoma- .....attorney general of new york state and several lawyers. A letter was posted in the dealership that they are not allowed to refuse to look at a 2001 to 2004 tacoma that someone brings in with frame concerns. It is an insult that a company that we loved, that prides it's self on quality service and customer happiness would do something so discriminatory to a toyota owner. We are of the mind that we will never buy another toyota due to this experience. We want everyone who owns a 2001 and up tacoma to know that their trucks are possibly dangerous if they have been in states that use road salt in the winter months. We were driving a time bomb, and think that anyone who owns a tacoma should join in a class-action suit against toyota. They knew we were driving these trucks with our families in them. We were driving these trucks in places that could have killed someone else. Please help us to get back what is entitled to us and everyone else they are hiding it from. Thank you for your time.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. She noticed corrosion on the frame of her vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who advised her tocontact both nhtsa and the manufacturer in reference to a safety concern.the manufacturer had not yet returned her call. No repairs were made. The current and failure mileages were under 70,000.

2001 toyota tacoma-pass nj state inspection. A friend looked and said your frame is rusted. Took it to my local toyota saturday 4/17/10 and they said the truck was unsafe to drive. They will have to replace the frame. I said i needed a truck for a rental they said by monday or tuesday they should have one. It is thursday 4/22/10and can not get in touch with anyone... I need a truck that is how i put food on my table.. Called corporate and they are giving me the run around too... My other concern is after they remove everything and put it back together other things are going to break.also, the resale value of my truck has decreased...

Just paid top dollar for a 2001 toyota tacoma only to find on the inside of the frame is completely rotted away and is very unsafe with any weight loaded in it.have found numerous accounts of premature frame failure due to faulty materials documented on the internet.new frame would need to be replaced along with new fasteners.

2001 toyota tacoma frame rust perforation.toyota should be forced into a recall on the tacoma truck frames.mine is perforated to the point where the vehicle is not safe, only 70,000 miles.

I was told sept 11,2008 that my 2001 toyota tacoma was rusted out beyond being fixed in the frame. I was contacted and made an offer of 100% kbb to but the truck back from me and when i told them i owed more then what was offered they replied that i had to say yes or no. I do not know what to do. I don't have the extra money to pay the loan off to settle.

2001 toyota tacoma not covered in 1995-2000 frame rust "soft recall" of march, 2008.on november 7, 2008 vehicle failed vt state safety inspection due to pervasive penetrating frame rust.although toyota knew of the defective frames prior to the march customer notification, toyota chose not to alert me (owner of a 2001 model) of this condition.on november 14, 2008 and november 19, 2008, toyota dealership and corporate staff verified the rusted frame and noted that vehicle was not safe to drive.although this failure didn't result in injury or death, i am concerned other 2001 owners may not be so lucky.toyota has done nothing to alert 2001 owners of this serious safety defect.we're finding out one at a time as our vehicles fail safety inspections.based upon my observations of the frame, i believe the defect is not simply the absence of a corrosion inhibiting coating, but rather inappropriate metallurgy - i.e. The frame itself could not possibly have been constructed from the correct quality of steel for this type of service.

I have a 2001 toyota tacoma extd. Cab and the frame has holes rotted in it. Obviously my '01 doesn't qualify for the '95-'00 buyback program. Toyota says they will replace the frame but i don't like this option. I personally know the truck will never be the same and the resale value is going to drop significantly. I want to be offered the same buyback option as the older tacomas.

2001 toyota tacoma rusted frame.called the services dept where i bought the truck and they said that there's no recall or anything to evaluate the problem.that my yr did not qualify for the rusted frame issue.my inspection station said that it's so rusted that he shouldn't pass me.that he would for this yr but forget for next yr.

In reviewing your website for recalls on the toyota tacoma, it appears that there is one missing that came before the recall for the spare tires.the one i speak of is the recall on the vehicle for frame perforations of which my vechicle now has and has deemed unsafe for driving.i believe this recall should be enforced by toyota as myself and numerous others have vehicles that cause safety hazards for not only ourselves but injuries to others.these vehicles are still on the road, as others like my self were not aware of the dangerous situatin toyota has placed us in because they are doing nothing to rectify the situation,i'd like to take m vehicle in for the tire recall however i will not risk my life in order to get this repair done.as an agency to is established to protect consumers from hazards, i and many others (visit facebook page toyota tacoma frame defects) feel that your agency should step-up and do something about this.

My 2001 toyota tacoma has failed a frame rot inspection by toyota that has been occurring in tacomas since 1995. A recall was issued on 1995 through 2000 tacomas has been issued and toyota is buying back the pickup at 1 and 1/2 times the suggested blue book on the pickups. I was told that there is no recall on 2001 at this time. I have the same problem as the 1995 through 2000 why should they not be made to recall the 2001 tacoma for an obvious safety problem. I have done alot of research and found many other toyota owners with a 2001 tacoma with the samesafety problem how can toyota allow people to drive a product with such a safety problem. The frame can snap and the cab become separated from the frame. Toyota should be made to recall all the trucks with this problem as it is only a matter of time before someone is killed because of this problem. I am in the fourth week of dealing with toyota on this problem and still have no answer. I have had to rent a car while i wait for toyota to decide what to do with my truck which the dealer said is unsafe to drive. If toyota knows about this problem how come they are not made to deal with the 2001 owners the same as the 1995 through 2000 owners i think this is unfair for a company not to stand behind a safety issue. Please look into this safety problem as someone will be hurt in an accident if toyota does not own up to the problem.

2001 toyota tacoma frame rot.

The frame of my 2001 toyota tacoma was replaced in 2010 because of severe rust problems. The rear axle assembly has the same rust problem , the axle is leaking. Should toyota have replacedthe rear axle also.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While servicing the vehicle, an independent mechanic discovered that the frame needed to be replaced due to corrosion build-up. The vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 171,000.

Toyota issued a recall on 95-2000 tacoma pickup trucks due to frame rot.i have a 2001 tacoma and was concerned that i might have the same issue.i called the dealership i purchased my truck at 3 separate times in the last 6 months to "double check and make sure" my truck was okay and was assured all three times, by three different individuals, that no such issue pertained to my vehicle and that my truck was fine.last friday (1-2-09) i was unable to pass the state inspection because of frame rot.the dealership confiscated my truck but did provide a rental vehicle and i am now waiting to hear back from toyota about the resolution for my truck.the 95-2000 owners were offered a very fair buy-back program.the 2000-2004 owners who are experiencing the same problem are in a "gray area" right now.the service people at the dealership say that toyota will be replacing the frames of these trucks rather than "buying them back."although that sounds fair at first, when numerous ase certified mechanics (many toyota tacoma owners themselves) are coming out saying that the frame replacement is a horrible idea, i have a concern.they cite ongoing problems that occur as is the case with a major frame swap, mentioning electrical issues, misalignment, uneven wear, rattles and squeaks, etc.the truck will never be the same again.i purchased a toyota for their reliability, dependability and high resale value.the kbb value for my truck has plummeted in just the last couple months, and even with a frame swap, i have been told that the value will drop still further, thus making it near impossible to get even close to what my tuck should be worth. If the mechanic who performed my inspection had not inspected the frame as well, i would be riding around with the potential to injure or kill myself and others without knowing that toyota is aware of these issues and has yet to issue any official statement to owners like me that a serious problem exists.

I own a 2001 toyota tacoma.recently i became aware that the frame was rusted and the vehicle was unsafe to drive.i contacted toyota and was informed that my 2001 was not covered by their consumer protection program that bought back 1995-2000 tacomas with the same problem, at 150% of the kelly blue book value.they have indicated that they will make me an offer probably at 100% of the kbb value.i have two children in college and 529 plans rocked by the economy and no extra money to spare.i was counting on the 'bullet proof' reliability claims of toyota and to keep the vehicle for several more years.i have enjoyed and appreciated the vehicle until now and cannot replace the truck at the current kbb value. I think this issue has impacted the resale value of these vehicles. More importantly however is that it is my understanding that toyotahad notified the vehicle owners of the 1995-2000 tacomas covered by their program, of the possible frame problems.they have not notified any of the owners of the newer vehicles that have, or may have the problem.it is my understanding that the frames could brake in some instances which could cause a serious accident and injury.

I have a 2001 toyota tacoma that appears well into the initial stages of frame problems. Appears to have excessive rust formation and some bubbling. Appears to be the same issue that 95-2000 tacomas are being recalled for. Toyota though will not include newer tacomas, with the same problem in their buyback program for the 95-2000's and are offering significantly less when the frames fail. This is both discriminatory and highly insulting to the newer tacoma owners. We should be offered the same buyback options and conditions as the earlier models. Free inspections to determine if the problem exists should also be provided, as they are with the earlier models. The frame issue extends well beyond the previously mentioned years and toyota needs to do what is right for all tacoma customers. Under their present provisions a 97 tacoma would be bought back by the company for more than my 2001, with the same issue and problem. This is a major safety issue that when identified, renders your vehicle useless and decreases its resale value to nothing. Toyota needs to be offer the same buyback option and incentives as with the 95-2000's. They also need to publicly admit that many tacomas of all years are having the same failure. It could cost some unknowing individual their life, if the frame failed.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The frame on the vehicle has corrosion and there was a hole in the frame on the driver side near the fuel tank.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. The technician stated the main frame was severely damaged, but no repairs were made. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle identification number was unavailable. The failure and current mileages were 109,000.

The manufacturer was notified who recommended that the vehicle not be driven. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 71,000.

I had my 2001 toyota tacoma checked and the frame is rusted out, the dealer deemed it unsafe to drive, i contacted toyota that same night and they said to take it home if you don;t have a ride.dealer said all they can do is a frame replacementand i said this is not acceptable, why isn't toyota treating this the same way as it did the 1995-2000 models??.. I know that the truck will never be the same once the mechanics are done,, this is like going back into production , and i know they're not trained for that.. Toyota didn't know what type of warranty i would have after the work was done,, they said that the solution to this problem was decided on 02/06/09 , my truck was evaluated on 02/18/09 a matter of 12 days,, i never received any type of notice on this.my mechanic say the problem when i went for my 3000 mile oil change which i've done since i've owned this truck ,,it only has 84000 miles on it and is in pristine condition..

2001 toyota tacoma frame rot - toyota is only including 1995-2000 in their "silent recall" for frame rot.mine failed their 2 inspections (may 01, 2008 and may 20, 2008)my truck was taken from me.i was told it is "unsafe to drive".evidently toyota is paying owners for newer trucks much less money than 1995-2000 tacoma owners.they have a much bigger problem with their productionthan is being acknowledged and reported. Please investigate later model years that exhibit serious frame rot issues before someone in the later model years is seriously injured or killed. I am happy to supply pictures ofmy specific, completely rusted, frame that has holes in many locations. This truck was well maintained, washed, waxed, garage-kept.the truck body is in fantastic shape.the only problem is the rusted, rotted frame with large holes in it.

On 12/23/08 when my vehicle was in for normal service i was told by the dealer that my frame was rotting and the vehicle was not safe to drive. I was told to call toyota corp and a case was assigned (200812230213). On 12/24 a case mgr called me and said that my entire frame had to be replaced and that they would be extending my warranty.he stated that the frame is rotted and unsafe so i was to be provided a loaner from my dealer - but not a like vehicle. I was told i would get a letter outlining the program toyota was introducing.the program as told is different than the one toyota has for pre-2001 tacomas.i was told that program was different and not available because parts (frame) are available.i spoke again with the case mgr on 1/6/09 and was told they do not know when parts will be available, he could not provide me the letter detailing the program, and i had to wait.my vehicle is deemed unsafe to drive by toyota and they have it at the local dealer yet they have not provided me documented details on the issue or the program to remedy it.this is the same issue as pre-2001 tacoma's have yet toyota is not offering the same program.they have now had my truck for 3 weeks and when i spoke with the dealer today they themselves have not gotten official notice from toyota, have no idea of parts availability, have not been told what part numbers to order, and do not know when they may get info.3 weeks without my vehicle, in a non-like replacement, and with no documented info from toyota is not acceptable.updated 02/05/09.

We took our 2001 toyota tacoma truck to a mechanic for routine service and he told us the frame is so rusted, he could break it with his hand.he told us it was unsafe to drive and to look into contacting toyota, which we did.the dealer told us they couldn't do anything because only the 95-2000 models were being recalled.we contacted customer service at toyota and they told us we would hear from someone within 30 days regarding our complaint.

My 2001 toyota tacoma truck was showing excessive frame rust. I noticed this when changing the oil. I had mentioned this to a few friends of mine who recently told me of a recall for 1995 through 2000 tacomas for the same reason. I took my truck to the dealership where i purchased the truck new in november of 2000. The service manager inspected the frame and filed a report with toyota. They sent out an inspector who looked at the frame and filed a report. I was told they would be in contact within 2 to 3 weeks. After not hearing from them, i called the service manager back and asked if he had heard anything at which time he had me call the customer assistance number for toyota. They gave me a claim number and said i would be hearing back within 24 hours. I got a call from toyota telling me they were aware of the claim, that my truck was not part of the recall and someone may contact me back. When i asked when, they said they had no answer for me. They also told me my truck was not under warranty at this point, which i was already aware of this fact. My truck was inspected over a month ago and i have received nothing. I am afraid to drive my truck and with winter coming on, i have no vehicle to drive in the snow. My truck has less then 100,000 miles on it and is in excellent shape other then the frame. Toyota needs to make this right. I am very disappointed in how they are handling this with the owners of the 2001 and up trucks. They should be required to take responsibility for these vehicles immediately and not by screwing people with offers of less then they are offering the owners of 1995 through 2000. That just adds insult to injury.

Truck frame rails are structurally unsound due to significant corrosion from exposure to road salt.discovered a corroded through section on the left inner frame rail (3 to 4 inches width) aft of the transfer case cross member and forward of the rear suspension and gas tank. A complete and detailed inspection of the frame rails has not been completed currently.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the rear frame became detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician diagnosed that the rear frame needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 220,000.

I own a 2001 tacoma pickup. It has been condemned because of a rust rotted body. I was not allowed to drive it off the lot. Toyota is doing a buy back on 1995-2000 owners and giving them 150% of the kelly blue book value plus $1,000 incentive towards a new purchase. All of us, and there are many, 2001 owners are only being offered 100% of the kbb on our newer, less used vehicles with the same problems.we have received a letter from toyotas attorneys giving us 6 months to accept or reject their offer. If i reject it, i get nothing. I feel this is unfair as my truck was newer but am being given less than 2000 owners. Can you help? thank you.

Purchased a new toyota tacoma and was told our 2001 that we were trading was not part of the recall for frame rust.the dealer offered us $1k for it so we gave it as a gift to our daughters boyfriend.it needed a new muffler and he took it in to have it replaced only to find that the frame was completely rusted out and it did not pass inspection.called toyota customer service and got a case number but this poor kid has now been without a vehicle for over a month.can not get a rental as those folks with 1995 to 2000 got.seems unfair but more than that, what about the safety of all those people driving around in 2001's that have not been recalled!!

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the frame of the vehicle was severely corroded. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was confirmed that the frame was severely corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

Received a recall notice letter for my 2001 toyota tacoma (letter stated vehicles covered were 2001-2004).the reason was to inspect frame for rust perforation.upon inspection the vehicle was found to have the perforation.their offer option would be to have the frame replaced.the replacement would come with a warranty of the frame for an additional 15 years(...on the new one.....frameonly...) but no other warranty of the affected components removed, handled, or replaced during the frame replacement would be warrantied.i have opened a case with toyota stating that i would be better served with the optional buyout, mentioned in the recall letter, which is available at their option.it is under review.

Toyota refused to fix dangerous rust defect on 2001 tacoma, which caused a rear differential gear oil leak.

No-one has been hurt, injured or killed to our knowledge, yet. The toyota corporation is offering a buy back of 1995-2000 tacomas due to frame "failure" and manufacturer issues with the frames on the trucks built in those years. We took our 2001 toyota tacoma that was manufactured in oct. Of 2000, to a dealership and they refused to look at it because it was not in the buy back range. The frame was extremely rusty and because we had heard about the "buy back" we wanted it looked at solely because of the oct. 2000 manufacture date. We contacted a lemon law lawyer and they said we have a case, and gave us toyota's corporate number. We were told by toyota that it would be sent through a claims process and they wanted us to make an appointment to have the frame looked at. At the appointment at the dealership, the tech looked at the frame and said that a toyota field representative would need to be brought in due to the concerns he had. The field representative came in from california and looked at the frame. He tapped it with a hammer in a few places and it went through. They told us we could not have our tacoma back as it would not pass inspection any more and arranged a rental. We were told that we would get 150% of the retail price for buy back by one of the toyota employees. We were told at the dealership by the representatives to keep quiet and not tell anyone else about what was happening with our tacoma, which we thought was odd. A month later, we receive a phone call from toyota saying that they would give us only 12,000 dollars for a truck that by their own standards of 150% of retail, though it was the 2001 model year, was worth over $19,700. They told us that it was their final locked in number and that it was take it or leave it. We told toyota that it was terrible that they would treat us this way and told them they would hear from a lawyer in some capacity. We have reported our experience to the attorney general of new york state ... (continued).

The frame rusted out with only 150,000 miles, informed vehicle needs to be junked or have frame replaced.this vehicle is unsafe to drive.

I own a 2001 toyota tacoma 4x4 with 83,000 miles. I have taken very good care of it and have been very happy with it except for the issue of severe frame rust. The body looks great, however the frame rust is just about all over the underside of the vehicle and includes the brake system, frame, drive train, etc. I have many older vehicles that have seen similar wear and use that have no frame rust whatsoever. This seems to be a common problem with the recently manufactured tacomas and i believe it is due to a manufacturing flaw.

My 2001 toyota tacoma has a perforated frame.i was issued a letter from toyota explaining the options.one option was to replace my frame.the other option was for toyota to buy back my vehicle at 1.5 % of excellent kelly blue book.i was not given the buy back option and they are trying to force the frame replacement on me.i am not happy with the remedy they have selected for me.this vehicle may never be the same after the frame is replaced.this is not any easy fix .to many parts are involved and i was informed it will take about 2 months to complete these repairs.

The frame on my 2001 toyota tacoma has frame rot.in some places on the frame the rot is 8-10 inches long.the only thing that i have done with thetruck has been driving it to work on a paved highway.

My 2001 toyota tacoma double cab frame is rusted through.toyota is buying back older ones but the frame is the same or worse on my 2001 with no holes to let water and salt out.this is a potentially dangerous situation and since they bought the older ones back in this area it must be serious.

I own a 2001 toyota tacoma pickup truck that has excessive frame rot. Recently the frame broke where the rear bumper mounts to the frame. There is rot located all over the frame. This vehicle falls into the scope of toyota motor company rusted frame problem.

I have a 2001 toyota tacoma that has frame rust through, and have received no help from toyota about a fair buy back as they do with the 95-2000 trucks. The truck has been inspected by toyota service, the service person said it failed but the factory district guy says it isn't bad enough. I now have a truck with a rusted frame that i can't sell and they won't buy back.

The 2001 toyota tacoma truck i owned was recalled for rusting frame. At the time i received the recall notice the frame on my truck was almost 90% rusted. On may 7, 2010 i took it to fox lake toyota dealership for the said recall and application for a corrosion preventative compound was performed by the dealer service department. On early october of this year i notice that large amount of the applied compound are peeling. I took it back to the same dealership on october 20 for inspection related to the peeling issue. The dealership called back october 22 informing me that they can't do anything since almost all of the compound are now gone. The service personnel claim that upon speaking to toyota, it was noted that they are researching it. I was told to take my vehicle back. I have the vehicle with me now but i am afraid to drive not knowing if the frame has rusted throughout. I inquired to the service personnel if the vehicle is safe to drive but did not get a straight answer. With winter approaching the vehicle will be again subjected to the corrosive environment. To date i have not receive a call back from the dealership or toyota as to what action they need to perform. No claim number was also provided by the dealership for me to use in case i call toyota directly.

This is about my 2001 toyota tacoma in massachusettson june 6 2008 went in for frame inspection report from dealer no rotcondition is excellentbrought it in today november 23, 2010. Total rot replacing the frame, up to 3 month wait for frame.

We have a 2001 toyota tacoma with complete frame rot.toyota has taken it and given us a free rental.it has been over a month and they say they can't tell us anything however did say that we would probably only get 100% kbb.this 2001 is not within the years of their buy back program.my husband filed a complaint at the beginning of this process sometime in the middle of may.there is a blog on edmunds.com that people write into everyday.more and more 2001 owners are writing saying that they have rot and are turning in their trucks.someone should put pressure on toyota to give owners of newer vehicles the same deal as the older ones in the buy back program.i have heard of 2002 and 2004 trucks failing inspection.people have little information and no recourse available to them.there was one guy saying that kbb of his truck was 7000 and he still owes 15000 on it.toyota has a big problem.the consumer needs help here making them step up.it's way more than just 1995 to 2000 tacomas.all the 2001s i have been hearing about on the blog and older years cannot just be a coincidence.there was a 2002 at the dealership that failed the day we were there for an inspection.

2001 toyota tacoma with failing frame due to rust issues. My understanding is that toyota is now offering to replace failing frames on 2001 and newer models as opposed to their buyback of 95-200 models. Unacceptable due to the obvious decreased retail value caused by this major issue, not to mention that many certified mechanics state that the frame replacement is a terrible idea due to the electrical, alignment, and structural issues that are common when this is done. Never a good idea and toyota knows it. I am in limbo, wanted to trade in my truck, but am not being offered the same plan that 95-2000 owners were.

2001 toyota tacoma diagnosed with frame rot back on 4/2/08. Numerous huge holes in right rear frame rail. Told by toyota not to drive vehicle as it is unsafe. I have no other vehicle still driving this truck. My vehicle was manufactured 01/01. Not part of current buy-back program 1995-2000. I am caught between the current buyback program and the original warranty. The toyota tacoma owners with the same issue are being offered a deal of 150% to return the truck. My truck has the same exact defect as 1995-2000 model why is my offer not the same.i would like my case reviewed. This program should include my 2001. My safety and toyota's reputation are both on the line.

Perforated frame.

2001 toyota tacoma has a rusted frame.consumer states that the truck frame rusted and caused the truck to break in half when it was placed on a lift at the dealership.*nj

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. When he took the vehicle to the dealer for routine maintenance he was informed that the front frame would eventually fall off. He contacted the manufacturer and report 2008061402 was filed. The manufacturer sent an inspector who found no corrosion or holes on the frame. The manufacturer told him because a failure was not located they will inspect the frame for him on a yearly basis. The failure mileage was 178,567 and the current mileage was 209,000.

2001 toyota tacoma.consumer writes in regards to rusts perforation of the frame rails and spare tire carrier recall issues.*ldthe consumer stated the dealer would not honor the frame rail recall.

Bought my toyota tacoma about a year an a half ago. Its a 2001 v6 extra cab 4x4. Brought it to the toyota deal on rt 37 east in toms river n.j and ask them to inspect the frame. They said it was in good condition. Just the other day i brought it in to a garage in town for an oil change and the check engine light was on. Come to find out the fuel tank is rusting and has a hole in it. Also the frame is severally rusted, the cross bar that holds the fuel tank is crumbling along with the rest of the frame. This whole rusting frame issue needs to be addressed not only is my family and my life in danger but so are the other drivers around me.

I brake in my driveway at approx. 2 mph, heard a loud thump in the rear end of my 2001 tacoma.when i checked, i found that the driver side front bracket to leaf spring holding the rear axle was actually sitting 2 or 3 inches into the frame rail.the frame had rusted through in that spot, the rust was so bad, that 6 inches of steel on bottom of frame rail was gone in any direction of the leaf spring bracket attachment point.there isn't enough steel left to even attempt a weld to repair it.on close inspection of the frame overall, there are multiple points where the frame rails have disintegrated.my rear axle is sitting off-center, and the car cannot be driven.if normal force or torque is applied, the axle will break free, and this will cause an accident. I heard that there is a recall on tacoma frame rails, so i called the dealer.dealer stated my vin did not have a recall; i called toyota, they told me that i would be contacted in 1 business day.they never called.2 days later, i called and got transferred to their "truck team," got shuffled around for 6 more phone calls over 3 days, when they informed me that they mailed me a notice that i had to have gotten a frame spraying to qualify for the frame recall.i never received such notice, and toyota did not even have my address; which they stated that they got all information from dmv.my dmv info is current, always has been.toyota has given my every type of run-around imaginable, ultimately denying my recall. On websites, there are thousands of people in my same situation...exactly the same.further, there are many people who had the frame spray, which then peeled off within months of application.this seems like toyota deliberately tried to exclude as many people as possible with this frame spray, which wouldn't be necessary in the first place if the frames weren't defective. My truck is dead.

Noticed that the right rear of truck bed is sagging so i looked under the truck and saw the chassis is rusted all the way through.

Excessive rust everywhere on the underside of the vehicle!!

Was driving about 45 mph - hit a pothole & the frame broke on both sides , behind the cab !!!almost an accident frame was rotted out from the inside !!!!but i wasn't on interstate at the timei called toyota u.s.a. ----they said -not their problem !!!i would not want someone driving on congested freeway at a high rate of speed & this happened someone could be killed !!!!!

I purchased the best truck i could ever wish for, 2001 toyota tacoma; it's an xtra cab with trd with the sr5. Today at 113500 miles it still looks and runs showroom new. But it has the rust on the frame and bad too. Toyota refuses to help in any way.in 2012 the frame was perfect, now it is almost eaten through. I love this truck but it is unsafe to drive and i am very displeased with how they are handling the situation. At 113500 miles i opt to go with toyota compared to chevrolet because toyota had a wonderful reputation on reliable vehicles and i was sold on that. When the recall was sent out, i was living in virginia and battling cancer so i missed the recall. I believe toyota should warrant their product or close down their plants if they won?t honor the issues at hand. I want a new frame or at least another truck with my engine and transmission, my baby is gorgeous. I am now on a fixed income with blood clots in my lungs due to the cancer i need my truck.

2001 toyota tacoma.consumer writes in regards todefective hitch recall and vehicle frame rust.the dealer informed the consumer, the recall could not be performed because the frame was badly rusted.

The frame was rusted, and we were aware of recalls. 2 weeks ago we had it inspected at the dealer where we bought it. The mechanic told us the vehicle was un-driveable. The service department sent the information to toyota but the recall claim was denied. The mechanic gave us a number to call to place a claim. The representative told us we had been mailed a letter in 2011 saying the vehicle needed undercoating. She admitted that it was something toyota was doing legally to avoid having to honor the recall claim. She also said that the undercoating would have been useless since defective steel was used to construct the frame. Again, the case manager told us the claim was being denied.

Toyota tacoma 2001,frame is rusted to the point that it cannot be repaired. Truck has 185,000 miles well kept.the body is in perfect condition. Frame looks like it is rusting from the inside out. Poor design box frame.7 years and now is useless. Toyota should be held responsible for this engineering flaw.

Brought vehicle to dealer for recall notice on spare tire mount. Later that day, dealer called and said they could not put vehicle on lift to check the mount, as frame was so rusted they feared it would break. I was informed at this time that there had been an earlier recall regarding this issue, but that it had been discontinued. I told the dealer i never received a recall for frame corrosion.i called toyota and was told that the recall had been extended but was no longer active, and that since the vehicle was not brought in while the recall was active, the 15 year warranty on the frame was void. Consequently, all costs to repair would be totally out of pocket. Dealer then told me that in the present condition, the trade-in value of the vehicle was now $200-$300 instead of anywhere near the book value of this model ($6000-$7000).

I just purchased this truck for my sons first vehicle. 1 day after i purchased it, i was informed of a recall issue toyota had with these frames rusting excessively creating a safety issue while driving. I took to my toyota dealer they confirmed and inspected my truck. They told me it was unsafe to drive. I called toyota customer care they told me my vehicle was not covered and there was nothing they would do. I can't believe they won't cover this failure. If they are only building vehicles to last 11 years, they should be shut down. Now my son has a truck he can't drive! great first car huh? i think it's toyota doesn't care center. Any help would be appreciated.

The frame on the vehicle is rusting. I didn't realize that tacoma's had rusty frame issues until after i purchased the vehicle.i am concerned that this frame will cause unsafe driving conditions if something gives out while driving.i am also concerned about the resale value of a year class of vehicles that are known to have rusty frames.

This complaint is in regards to a defective frame on my 2001 toyota tacoma pick-up that was purchased used in february of 2007 with 102,000 miles. A nys inspection was performed upon purchase.the truck now has 130k. September 6th, 2008, while installing at a local tire and break shop, the tech noticed serious frame rot on the back passenger side of my truck. The shop manager informed me of a voluntary toyota buy-back for 1999-2000 models, warranty policy bulletin pol08-03, dated 3/7/08. I contacted toyota and had the truck immediately inspected by lia toyota service of colonie ny. I was informed the frame was seriously rotted, and the truck no longer safe to drive. I was told the following to rectify the situation:1. The dealership could not 'go to bat for me' to assist me with dealing with toyota for a recall request;2. 2001 models are not "usually covered" in the recall. And; 3. If covered, i would not get a loaner car; i would not receive the 150% value as is standard for 1995-2001 modelsthis is a slap in the face. Why should the 2001 models be excluded from the warranty and recall coverage afforded by the 1995-2001 models? my truck is newer - yet it has the same frame rot. The fact that the dealer refused to assist me with this process is additionally infuriating.toyota has yet to contact me via the case manager they have assigned me. I don't know if toyota will pay me 100% of the value of my truck for march of 2008 or august of 2008. The blue book value of my truck has dropped significantly since the recall was issued. Defective frames are not exclusive to the 1995-2000 model year tacomas - so why is toyota excluding newer models? this is dangerous, perhaps even criminally negligent.toyota should be recalling tacoma trucks manufactured after 2000 that are experiencing massive frame rust - without doing so the company is endangering the lives of tacoma owners. Following routine service inspection on 4/2/2014, significant perforation of my 2001 toyota tacoma 4x4 truck frame was identified, due to conditions consistent with rusting.according to a 2012 toyota dealership diagnostic, no indication of rust was noted during the dealership service inspection.also, no hard copy documentation has been provided by toyota corporation regarding an alleged voluntary recall campaign to address corrosion of frame.according to the toyota corporation case worker assigned, he was unable to provide any hard copy documentation of said voluntary recall campaign notice regarding corrosion of truck frame; it should be noted that the case worker did say he could provide 'verbal' confirmation that notification was sent to my residence at the time.at this time, i am currently considering legal action, pending further review of case.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while at an independent mechanic for unrelated repair the contact was informed the frame was severally corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated there was a manufacturer recall that was issued the previous year to treat the frame and prevent corrosion. The contact did not receive notification of the recall and never had the vehicle treated. The technician stated there was no repair for the failure and informed the contact they were not liable for the frame corrosion. The mechanic advised the vehicle should not be driven because it was unsafe. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 230,000. Updated 01/14/13

My frame was replaced under recall because of the rust.a couple weeks after getting my truck back i was stranded in 100 degree heat because i was unable to get my spare tire out from under bed of truck.severely rusted bumper no longer allows access to mechanism to lower tire.fought with dealer and regional mgr.they say it is not a safety issue.i could not disagree more.why then do we have spare.he did admit that if it was his wife and children stranded on the highway it might be different.but, no.....now they are recalling the part that hold the spare under the truck because tire may fall off.that would be doing me a favor....

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While working on the vehicle, the contact noticed the undercarriage was corroded from the mid point to the rear bumper. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact also stated that the vehicle was subject to a rust prevention treatment in august of 2010. Glenn toyota dealer in frankfort, ky completed the treatment on the exterior of the frame, but not the interior. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the extended warranty was expired. The approximate failure mileage was 190,000.

I bought this truck in june 2014 from a private dealership in virginia, then moved from maryland to seattle. I had it inspected in maryland, it passed, but i discovered that the frame was rusted completely through- the leaf springs are not even attached, making it unsafe to drive. I contacted toyota, and the previous owner had the rust treatment applied in 2011, but the extended warranty expired in 2013, so they are refusing to help. I have only had this truck 9 months and it is basically worthless and dangerous.

I have replaced the lower ball joints five times in the last four years. Three on the drivers side and twice on the passengers side. Twice i was in someone's driveway twice i was traveling on a highway and once i was turning a corner. I received a recall notice about five years ago however i never reaponded at the time. Now when i look on this website it says there was no recall so i am unsure how to proceed.

I'm writing you because i had my 2001 tacoma inspected for the frame rust recall in 2010. At that time i was told that my truck would be sprayed with an inhibitor to prevent rust. The vehicle frame has since rusted and isunsafe to drive. The spray inhibitor obviously did not work or was applied incorrectly.the vehicle started showing these signs while drivinh.

The frame is totally rotted out. I bought the truck used and after haven't it several months i was changing the oil and to my suprise when i was under it i could not believe what i was seeing. It is not safe to drive

The chasis broke just in front of the rear axle.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact was driving approximately 30 mph when a loud noise was coming from the front end of the vehicle. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and inspected the vehicle. The ball joints on the front passenger side broke and the entire wheel detached causing damages to the axle. The vehicle was towed to his residence. The dealer was notified of the failure. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 05v225000 (suspension: front: control arm: lower ball joint). The vin was excluded from the recall. The manufacturer stated that the repairs would be at the owner expense. The failure mileage was 186,000.

While turning right out of parking lot at slow speed, passenger side wheel disengaged from lower ball joint leading to loss of steering.

Frame is completely rusted out

Frame recall: when i received notice of this recall i took it to a dealer in slc, ut and had it checked on 9/22/08.i was informed that it was fine and they didn't do anything to it. Now 8 years later, my truck has turned into a safety hazard because the frame is so rusted out, i can't even get my brake line that recently broke repaired.i have been told that this particular recall expired in 2014.i don't understand how a recall can expire.nor do i understand that if my frame was fine in 2008, how it could have rusted away to this extent so quickly.the state of the current rust was pointed out to me in 2016.i understand that i have been drivingthe truck for 16 years; however, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the engine and i had hoped to drive it till the engine died.please explain to me how this recall could expire when it did and why toyota won't accept any responsibility for replacing the frame.

Initial problem 12/08/2009:in december of 2009, i dropped my toyota tacoma off at my local dealer (lexington toyota, (ma) for a service appointment.lexington toyota called me and stated that my 2001 tacoma had a serious frame rust perforation problem. They stated that the solution to this problem was to replace the entire frame at no cost to me and they assigned a case number. The total cost to me when the job was completed was $1,717.77 (see-attached invoice [xxx].) the frame repair invoice was dated 12/22/2009. Fast forward to 12/10/2018:on 12/10/2018, i brought my 2001 tacoma into the service department of lexington toyota for some brake work. Later that day they called and said that my frame had selected rot and would not pass the next state inspection. The service department stated that they had reviewed the situation with the service manager and that there was nothing that they could do for me. I explained that the frame had been replaced in december of 2009 and that the service advisor ([xxx]) had stated to me that the new frame was warrantied for fifteen years. I joking replied that it would probably last longer than i would. I guess i was wrong.i have all of my repair work and yearly state inspection work done at lexington (ma) toyota. I am disappointed that this situation was not identified earlier when it could have been dealt with before getting to its current state. I beleive this is a serious safety issue. This could cause a serious accident if the frame fails while on the highway. If this happened to me, how many tacoma?s and other toyotas are out there that had frame replacements that are now defective. It looks to me like toyota used the same substandard frames for their replacement program. I have contacted toyota and was told there was nothing they could do. I spoke with [xxx], customer service rep. On 01/09/19 [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Left front wheel broke off a arm.lower ball joint completely missing.vehicle has 160442 miles.no indication of steering problem.tires were rotated one month before accident i replaced the tire and asked the mechanic if he does a visual inspection.the answer was yes.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving 10 mph, he noticed that the frame was tilted causing the tires to wear out prematurely. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician stated that the spring shackle fractured due to the frame being completely corroded. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 135,000.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While driving at a slow speed, there was an abnormal sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. While inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the fuel tank strap fractured due to excessive corrosion. The contact stated that the subframe that supported the rear suspension was also excessively corroded. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 05v225000 (suspension); however, the repair failed to remedy the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 133,613.

The dealer confirmed corrosion on the drivers side i-beam and the cross beam, which was detached on the passenger side of the vehicle. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 173,000 and the current mileage was 173,200.

Rear passenger leaf spring frame mount rusting off. Vehicle is not safe to drive.

I see that my frame is cracking. So i looked it up. And found multiple recalls on the tuck. I noticed that i have a very sloppy steering wheel. It said that was a recall too. I'm don't no if previous owner had anything recalled.

While driving heard a skidding sound, look under truck lost trd plates, rotted became lose and fell.under carriage corroded.

After a muffler shop pointed out serious holes in the frame of my 2001 toyota tacoma (with 174,000 miles), i contacted kings toyota and toyota manufacturing. They said the truck was out of warranty. I took it to hamilton body shop and they said there was a recall for the life of the truck.i contacted performance toyota with my vin # and they said there was no recall in their data bank. I have been told the truck is unsafe to drive. I have had the truck frame inspected at kings toyota twice in the past several years and they said the frame was ok at that time. My truck is in mechanically good condition, body looks fine too. Would love to continue to drive it several more years. Would appreciate help determining if there is, in fact , a recall and how do i go about getting the information i need to get this frame repaired.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact was driving approximately 2 mph and the front end of the vehicles passenger side collapsed to the ground. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who stated the lower ball joint separated from the knuckle would need to be replaced. There was a recall related to the failure under nhtsa campaign id number 05v225000 (suspension: front: control arm: lower ball joint); however the vin was not included. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 212,000.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While driving at various speeds, a squeaking sound emitted from the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the front driver side ball joint was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 140,000.

The contact stated that while driving 40 mph the front driver side tire became detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the contacts residence. The tow truck driver informed the contact of nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 166,836.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken in for a brake repair when the technician advised that the ball joints failed. The contact was told there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension: front: control arm: lower ball joint), but the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The failure and the current mileage was 144,000.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving the vehicle's subframe felt loose underneath. The contact noticed rust and corrosion underneath the wheel well and on the subframe of the vehicle. Riverhead toyota (1655 route 58 (old country road), riverhead, ny 11901 (631) 727-7722) inspected the vehicle and stated the vehicle was not safe to be driven and that the subframe needed to be replaced. The contact was informed of a special program to the replace the subframe back in 01/2016 which expired. The contact had not received the notification. The manufacturer was contacted and informed of the failure. The manufacturer provided the contact with a case number and promised a callback. The vehicle was still unrepaired. The failure mileage was 75,000.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the steering wheel began to vibrate excessively. The failure occurred only when driving 50 mph or greater. The vehicle was taken to an independent, who informed that both front lower ball joints would need to be replaced. The vin was not included in the nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension) and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 194,000.

I took the vehicle in for routine maintenance and was alerted to the frame corrosion.i can actually push my finger through the rust and frame, holes are visible in the frame.the truck is unsafe to drive and i fear of safety for my family.i contacted toyota and they advised me that the voluntary buyback program for fixing this was expired.i am now left with an immaculately clean car in pristine shape that cannot be driven and i am leery of even selling to someone else regardless of their knowledge of the frame.reports of this problem are popping up all over and it needs to be dealt with as a serious matter and subject to safety recall.lesser issues have had recalls and it has been left up to toyota to provide voluntary buyback programs instead of being mandated for public safety.

Noticed that the right rear of truck bed is sagging so i looked under the truck and saw the chassis is rusted all the way through.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. While driving 10 mph and making a left turn, the front driver side of the vehicle collapsed. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 230,000.

While driving down a road at about 5 mph, my lower left ball joint (driver side) separated without any warning causing my truck to lose control as the entire truck collapsed onto my driver side tire, because the suspension was no longer holding it up. In the event that i had been going much faster (possibly even ten miles per hour) i feel that the wheel would have completely ripped off, causing extensive damage and complete loss of control.i then found out toyota had made a recall on this part and when i contacted them, i was apparently 2 weeks past the recall window.i feel that the recall should be extended due to the sheer number of these trucks that are still on the road.when the lower ball joint fails, it is a catastrophic event that can very easily result in a crash.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated the upper and lower ball joint failed on the front drivers side wheel and fell off. The contact towed the vehicle to the dealer who confirmed that the ball joint failed. The dealer stated there was a recall, but that the vehicle was no included in nhtsa recall campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension: front: control arm: lower ball joint). The failure and current mileages was 175,000.

Ball joint separated causing driver to lose control of vehicle.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that while driving the vehicle at approximately 12mph the contact heard a loud noise from the rear end of the vehicle every time the accelerator pedal was depress. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated the issue was the lower ball joint on the suspension that was worn off and needed to be replace. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 05v225000 (suspension: front: control arm:lower ball joint). The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000 and the current mileage was 110,500.

I recently purchased a 2001 toyota tacoma sr5, 4wd crew cab truck that was originally manufactured and sold in plano texas, then relocated and driven in gaithersburg maryland for 16 years. Upon obtaining a frame inspection from my local toyota dealership, i was advised that this vehicle was unsafe to operate due to excessive corrosion of the frame, and specifying the frame would need to be replaced. The rust has perforated the frame rails in several areas and has compromised the structural integrity and safety of this vehicle. The frame of this vehicle lacks adequate corrosion protection which has been acknowledged by toyota north america.

My odi # 10703114im sure as you are the federal safety adm. ,, you have already read the study , where a group of really smart engineers & analysis found that the 2001 to 2004 toyota tacoma frame failure was from the box design coupled with low grade steel & insignificant rust preventive , resulted in potential catastrophe frame failure leading to a potential hazardous situation!!~!!!but if you deem it not to inform the us consumer --- far be it for me to suggest how you should do your job!my apologies.

My frame is completely rusted and all the capomintes are also. I cant change anything put because of it. My leaf springs are shot where they are mounted to the frame. Is weaking which is moving my back axle off balance. My front ailment is completely off. I and dreak anything lose to fix the issue's. It feels like they completely forgot to spray my frame on my truck

Upon making a turn into my driveway the lower left(drivers side) ball joint seperated from the knuckle causing loss of steering.this in turn made the front wheel fall into the vehicle.

Lower ball joints have failed.while other 2001 tacoma's were in the recall, mine is not included, even though it is the same failure! the tires have are wearing unevenly and there is some stability issue.there seems to be "pulling" to one side as well.

Took truck for inspection, wouldn't pass because frame is rusted through and right rear shock absorber is unattached because of frame. Mechanic says driving it is unsafe. Toyota had recall i was unaware of for rusted frames, when contacted them they said they could do nothing.

2001-2004 toyota tacoma frame rust perforation that is now an ongoing issue with these trucks. Toyota wants to repair frames instead of buying back trucks like they did with the 1995-2000 models. Its an unsafe repair and unsafe to drive truck with a perforated frame. Seems like a "quiet" recall.

The frame on my toyota tacoma 2001 truck is so rusted out that it is not inspect-able. The local toyota dealership will do nothing for me....i have contacted toyota customer service...waiting for a call back...toyota needs to do something to fix the problem....nhtsa...please help!!

While driving in wet conditions on an interstate the truck hydroplaned and spun out of control causing it to leave the roadway and flip over twice landing on the cab.neither airbag deployed.only occupant, driver, sustained only very minor injuries.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota tacoma.while attempting to make a left turn at 15 mph, the contact heard a popping noise coming from the front passenger side wheel.the tire detached from the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to a dealer and they stated that the ball joints failed, which caused the wheel to detach and the axle to fail.the insurance company inspected the vehicle and confirmed the ball joint failure.while the vehicle was being repaired, the insurance company notified the contact of nhtsa campaign id number 05v225000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint).the manufacturer stated that the vin was excluded from the recall.he believes that the recall should have included his vehicle.the current and failure mileages were 134,000.

2001 toyota tacoma prerunner 2 wheel drive, 6 cylinder, automatic extra cab 30,000 miles right side upper and lower ball joints failed at freeway speed causing wheel and brake assembly to fold under vehicle. This resulted in loss of control and loss of braking and severe damage to vehicle. *nlm

After noticing that the truck developed unusual tire wear and shaking and noise coming from the front end ,making the truck difficult and hazardous to drive.a private technician indicated that the front ball joints neededto be replaced. I was made aware of a toyota recall, and was informed that although thisvehicle was exhibiting the exact condition described in the recall that was onidentical make, model and year thistruck was not part of the recall and would not be covered due to the vin.

Dt: without warning the vehicle started to shift to the right and the front tires were wearing too fast, and driver'sside tire was swollen. Caller stated all the tires were affected. Front suspension lower ball joint. My 2001 toyota tacoma double cab vin [xxx] has diagnosed with a worn lower right front ball joint. I have been complaining about a noise in the front suspension for the past 50,000+ miles. Initially the noise occurred while taking left turns, now the noise occurs during all phases of operation (left& right turns, and stopping). Toyota claims my that the recall is vin specific and mine is not covered by the recall/tsb. Yet my vehicle exhibits all the symptoms described in tsb 05015 (nhtsa #100015504) and has for several years. My 2001 toyota tacoma was involved in a accident. At the trial the accident reconstruction person said he could not understand why the crash happened that it looked like some one hadyanked the wheel very hard. 2001 toyota tacoma.consumer writes in regards to rusts perforation of the frame rails and spare tire carrier recall issues.*ldthe consumer stated the dealer would not honor the frame rail recall.

And plus, i wouldn't want to make this into a legal matter as i love my toyota.

Rear frame is rusted out and braking into pieces. I called toyota and there was a recall for the rusted parts. They told me the recall has expired and they will not honor it

Takata recall oct.2014 our truck wouldn't pass inspection because frame rusted out. The spare tire fell off on the highway, so we knew we had a problem. We called toyota and they said they couldn't do anything because recall ended and that we had been sent a paper in 2010( the year we moved)they told us they couldn't do anything about the spare tire because we had to still have the tire. So we had to find some to weld and do the work ourselves to get it inspected.

2001 toyota tacoma 4x4 bought new and has 186,000 miles and the frame is almost broke completely into. I have never received any recall on my vehicle. Toyota can say what they want about sending me one but i have never received one. So i must say that we have purchased approximately 4 or 5 new ones and have never experienced anything like this. We have owned probably 9 or 10 used ones. I'm trying to get some help on getting this resolved. I really don't know what to do because toyota promises to stand behind their word, so why can i not get any help. What's going to happen when i am driving down the road and it breaks completely into and causes me to get hurt or maybe killed or hurt someone or causing death to someone. Then what are you going to think about that. I can't work anymore and i can't afford to get this fixed, and i am going to let everyone know exactly how good toyotas have become. Would you want to buy this vehicle, no absolutely not. By looking at this truck you would never expect anything to be wrong with it. I am truly expecting some help with this matter. Thank you

There is a recall for the under neath tire rack to be fixed. It apparently has rusted away. I have case 1411181385 with toyota. They are unable to fix the tire rack because the rest of the frame is rusted away as well.

Cracked rusted frame

Rust seems to be coming off by the handfuls and pieces thick enough that i am concerned.i looked under my truck and among other things, metal lines (brake, steering, not sure), the gas tank, and steering linkage became my biggest concern.by the thickness of rust i have gotten from my vehicle i am certain it is not surface rust.how much will something rust before it becomes a failure, especially with a line under pressure such as brake lines?the last time i filled up i noticed gas leaking on the concrete.i am not sure if it is coming from the tank itself or not.

My frame is rotted out and the bed is up against the cab. Can not drive it now. Haven't drove it since october 2013 due to brain cancer.

Truck recall due to frame rust. Toyota was called, they said they mailed a recall letter but i didn't get the notice. They also said it was outside the time limit to have any repairs done and that they wouldn't honor the recall on my truck

2001 toyota tacoma was recalled in 2011 due to rust/corrosion of the vehicle frame. We promptly followed all recall instructions and took the vehicle to a toyota service center in response to the recall. Toyota treated the frame with a solution and we were advised the the issue was resolved. The vehicle frame recently collapsed / broke in two. I notified toyota of the issue and was assigned a case #1606222761. I was notified today by toyota and they advised that the frame warranty had been extended but that the warranty expired 11/7/2015. They advised that there is no appeal process and no solution. The vehicle is not driveable although the vehicle is is perfect running order and in very good condition (other than a broken frame). The broken frame was not a result of abuse or a specific moment in time - it just collapsed due to corrosion - the very issue of the 2011 recall that we were told had been resolved.

Inspection failed. Told frame rusted badly and unsafe to drive. Contacted toyota dealer and they won't do anything.

While driving the truck we heard a rubbing and clanking noise. The rearshock absorber support ,on the passenger side, completely rusted away along with the frame and is now resting against the bottom of the truck bed. We took the vehicle to a toyota dealer who informed us that the entire frame is perforated with holes, the frameon the drivers front is extremely damaged and the vehicle is not safe to drive. We contacted toyota and were told they will do nothing because the frame is out of warranty by 46 days.

2001 tacoma. The 15 year extended warranty is not enough; it should be a mandatory recall/inspection with no time limitations. Frames are visibly rusting through after the warranty expires, but the frames are defective prior to that and owners don't realize it because no recall was ever issued and any visible inspection doesn't reveal the problem. I know now that my frame was defective during the warranty period but it didn't become 'visible' until after 16 years. Toyota has tried to sweep this under the rug by doing as little as possible to ease the judicial system. How many people are driving on life-threatening frames that don't even realize it because the frame is something an average person doesn't tend to check? an official 'recall' notice would get those trucks in the shop for inspection.

As i was driving up a mountain, the traffic in front of me was slow, i braked to slow, but the truck did not slow down.i pushed harder on the brake, but the truck still did not slow down. There was no place to pull off, a drop off on the right and traffic on the left coming down the mountain.i kept my foot on the brake as hard as i could push it, all the way to the top of the mountain.there was a parking area at the top and i turned into that area.my husband quickly turned off the key and we came to a sudden stop.we got out of the truck and my husband raised the hood. Several men stopped to see if they could help. While the truck was sitting there, with the gear shift in park,my husband started the engine a couple of times.the engine raced at full speed.my husband did not have his foot near either pedal.there was nothing in the floor near the pedals.a tow truck came and picked up the truck, it was taken to the owner's location and the cruise control was disconnected.the engine ran normally then.we took the truck to a toyota dealership, where it was checked, and we were told that there was nothing wrong with the truck.

The truckwas broken by the half where the loading part begins.

Frame recall. Toyota claims that they sent a recall notice which i never got. When called they said that the time period to have repairs done was expired

Dash is splitting and is noisy.

2001 tacoma, took in for an oil change and they couldn't lift the truck.the frame was rusted through on both sides.going on line it appears this is a common problem with toyota tacoma's. Toyota needs to address this.fortunately i was not in an accident or towing anything as the frame is totally gone and unsafe to drive.doesn't look like anyone is having any luck with toyota addressing the problem.sad that someone may have to die in an accident before they will step up.

My son was driving north on i45 from huntsville, tx to fort worth, at approximately 11:30 pm.he was drving approximately 70-75 mph near mm159 when he heard a loud thud noise come from under his truck.he immediately observed flames coming from the rear of the truck and immediately pulled off the road and stopped.the flames engulfed the rear of the truck and under the cab of the truck.he exited the vehicle and sustained a burn to the lower portion of his left leg.seconds after he exited the vehicle, the entire truck was engulfed in flames.a texas state trooper was passing shortly after my son exited the vehicle and requested assistance from the fire department and paramedics.(photos taken).

Orrosion of the plate could cause it to break, which could result in detachment of the spare tire from the vehicle. Detachment of the spare tire could result in a road hazard which may increase the risk of a vehicle crash. Toyota is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 tacoma light trucks manufactured from august 28, 2000, through august 27, 2004, and originally sold, or currently registered, in the following cold climate states with high road salt usage: connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia. The spare tire in the subject vehicles is located underneath the rear of the vehicle and held by a spare tire carrier. Vehicle is rusted undercarrige.

There was a recall on toyota tacoma trucks regarding frame rust for years 1996 to 2004i tookthe truck into marion toyota for inspection and they said that the frame was ok and they sprayed it with arust coating compound.wheni got home i inspected the work and found that they sprayedovera significant amount of mud that was on the frame (see pictures) i took the truck back.marion toyota called a representative from chicago. They sort of "cleaned" off the mud and resprayed the frame.there was still mud underneath the spray.they refused to do anything else with the truck and told me thatit did not qualify for any recall replacement.i have tried several times to bring it to the attention of toyota but to no avail. Within the last year thespare tire fell off while drivingon the road.the front bumper just fell off. The frame is flaking rust and corroding at joints.marion toyota basically just sprayed over mud to seal the frame.

Toyota tacoma 2001 has severe frame and suspension corrosion. The vehicle was taken to toyota dealership, and without even inspecting the truck, i was advised to contact toyota corp office, which i have not done yet. But will do today. I took it to my mechanic to get his opinion...he advised that it was severe and would not pass any inspection.

Last month while driving my toyota tacoma a loud bang was heard from under the truck. To my dismay, the right rear shock mount pulled free from the frame due to rust that was to have be corrected at my dealership under the toyota truck frame recall.i brought it to my dealership and they said it was toyota's choice to either undercoat or replace the frame. My vehicle was undercoated. Unfortunately i now have an unsafe, non-driveable and unsalable vehicle.toyota should not be permitted to pick and choose which vehicles they repair correctly and which they coverup with undercoating. I appeal to the nhtsa to look into this matter as rust is blistering out from multiple areas under the undercoating. Please help!

The engine reved up as if the accelerator was stuck pressed down.there was no floor mat in the way.i had to put the truck into neutral and pull over. I turned off the engine. When i turned the engine back on, the rpms were still extremely high, so i had to turn it off and let it sit for over 5 minutes.this has happened 6 times since then.i have taken the vehicle into a mechanic who can not get it to repeat for him.this is very scary.the good thing is that this is a standard transmission, so neutral is easy.it is very unsafe on the highway when it happens.

I was told that there was a recall on my vehicle, and when i notified toyota they indicated that they would no longer honor the recall, unless i had gone in for some kind of underlayment. I never was notified of this, and since the vehicle will be considered unsafe i feel that they toyta should takecare of this issue.please advise if there is a limitation on safety hazards for vehicles.

The frame rusted out with only 150,000 miles, informed vehicle needs to be junked or have frame replaced.this vehicle is unsafe to drive.

Driving my 2001 toyota tacomait quickly was taken over by the rear of the truck, spinning it in 2 rapid circles, hittig the freeway metal guard raiing, ten stopped facing te oncoming traffic.

I was backing out of a store in san carlos mexico.i started the truck, applied the brake and put the truck into reverse.the truck accelated backward out of control and struck a cement post in the parking lot and came to a stop.the engine continued to increase in rpms.i tried to put the truck into park.the gear shift moved and the truck began to accelerate forward.the brake was unresponsive and the engine continued to increase in rpms.the truck accelerated forward out of control jumping a parking curb and crashed into the front of the store.the airbags deployed.the front passenger sustained a fractured foot.one of the rear passengers suffered a contusion to her forehead.there was significant damage done to the front end of the truck and damage done to the store front.i have not been able to assess the damage to the truck or investigate the cause of the accident because the truck is still being held in mexico by the authorities.dt

Bought the truck new from dealer in austin,tx. Carried in yesterday for tire rotation at american tire and was told the truck had the wrong lug nuts on the wheels and it was unsafe to drive from shop. I purchased new wheels so i could safely drive the truck. I called toyota and explained the situation to them and was given a case number. I was told i need to carry it to a dealer and let them see the wheels also. The in modesto ca agreed that the truck had the wrong lugs on it but said the wheels was probably ok to use as long as they had the proper lug nuts on them. I called toyota back and ask them to make the truck right and that i was quoted $341.49 for correct parts at modesto, ca dealership. Toyota told me theirs not enough history on the truck of dealers maintainingit and with the age of the truck they wasn't willing to do anything.my family and i having been driving this truck for years and could have had a tire come off with the wrong lug nuts. All i ask for was to make the truck safe and reimburse me for the cost of the after market wheels which was $150.00.

Wheels are two piece construction rust build-up between the two pieces does not allow me to clean.impossible to servicerust build-up is excessive.

Loss of spare tire assembly due to rusttoyota will not replace wheel assemblywill replace the rusted tire holderbut not the tire toyota replaced the frame on a recall and did not replace the rusted spare tire holder this is negligence on the part of toyota someone may have been killed when the spare tire came loose on the highway at 55 mph.

Consumerwas traveling about 40mph onhighway andheard a noise coming fromrear wheel, and the wheel fell off.dealershipwas aware ofproblem.
