Consumer's mother contacted toyota to make a complaint and they sent out an investigator.they informed her on several occassions that their legal department would get back with consumer. To this day consumer has not heard from them. The truck has been fixed but with the same air bags. Two other trucks like similar in this small community of 2000, have been inaccidents.one had the air bags deploy after hitting a deer, the other in their crash did not have the air bags deploy.does this mean i have to drive everyday wonder if i get in another wreck will they work if i need them?what makes toyota so mighty that they don't have to let me know what's wrong or are they going to fix it? * mjs

Upon purchase of a 1998 toyota tacoma from lithia toyota of missoula, montana i was presented with an odometer disclosure statement stating the vehicle had 168,143 miles. While test driving the vehicle earlier on paved highway i noticed the odometer read 168,000 and something miles, so signed the disclosure statement in good faith of the dealer. I also had requested a vehicle history report. After the test drive, the salesman handed me an autocheck vehicle history report. He did not explain details of the report to me, although it seemed fairly straightforward. Heading the odometercheck section, in bold letters it stated "your vehicle checks out!" it continued by stating "autocheck examined the reported odometer readings reported to autocheck for this 1998 toyota tacoma sr5(vin#) and no indication of an odometer rollback or tampering was found." because i had been warned about used vehicles and accidents i focused on the accidentcheck and title and problemcheck in the report. It wasn't until the odometer went out driving on gravel a week later that i realized the odometer was flawed. And it doesn't record the mileage when it is out. On closer inspection of the vehicle history report, there are six reports underneath the odometercheck section. The suspect mileage is between the 2nd and 3rd mileage reports. The 2nd mileage reports 15,000 miles 10/09/98 with a notation stating: "not included in rollback calculation." the 3rd mileage reports 10,038 12/10/1998. That is a difference of -4,962 miles lost on the odometer. I phoned, then brought the tacoma back to lithia 8/6/13. The man in the service department said they found no problem and recommended replacing the circuit board at my expense. There was nothing they could do, he repeated. I wrote a letter to toyota corp. 8/9/13 and received a response by phone 8/20/13. The analyst stood by lithia's decision 8/23/13.
Key would not turn in the ignition. Yh
1998 toyota tacoma engine starter motor began to operate intermittently.after 1-month in this condition, starter motor failed to start engine.dealer says that the contacts on the starter motor wear resulting in the intermittent operation.the only options are to replace the starter motor or overhaul the starter motor.i would not expect for the starter motor to fail only after 8 years.
While driving i noticed that my left turn siginal did not operate properly when i put it on. Upon further inspection i found that the left front turn siginal light would illuminate when i applied my brakes. The right side turn siginal worked properly. I began an electrical inspection: when my emergency flashers were activated my emergency flashers worked, but so did my rear tail lights when the emergency flashers were on. Being a safety related problem i took it to the local toyota dealer who troubleshoot the problem and the said that the rear light harness was faulty. They went to replace it and they found that the replacement wiring harness did not match (align) with the wiring harness (original equipment) that came with my truck.so my local toyota dealer contacted toyota national, who had to research the item to find the proper harness to match my truck. Toyota national said that the original equipment wiring harness that came with the trucks were discontinued due to harness failures (electrical shorts)! since my truck had the suspect harness on it new, it should have been replaced by toyota prior to delivery or recalled! to me this is a safety issue, if i did not notice this as quick as i did, there could have been an electrical fire. Since toyota knew (which they said) there was a possible malfunction with the cable they they should be replacing this cable when it failed for free not charging me$418 .
Bought a vehicle from a woman off of craigslist. Met her in an unfamiliar area. Woman stated the vehicle was in good condition and runs perfect. Woman would not allow us to test drive the vehicle. My husband insisted on checking the vin on carfax and she quickly pulled out an outdated title. The vehicle's odometer reading stated approximately 166,000 miles. After the transaction of $5000.00 was completed in cash. She quickly left with a heavyset hispanic male that was with her. My husband looked at carfax and the last reported mileage on carfax for the vin number was approximately 278,000 miles for that vehicle. The woman quickly blocked out phone numbers. About an hour later she had her number unblocked. We called her from a different number and acted as though i was ready to purchase a vehicle from her and she stated she had another vehicle, and could meet me at the same location (not knowing it was me) not only was the odometer reading false, the vehicle was not driveable and completely unsafe. The transmission was broken.

V6 engine failure on a toyota pickup. The piston detached from the rod causing internal damage.*la
Vehicle virbrates while driving at any speed, and the dealer states the motor supports aren't large enough for the motor, causing the vehicle to vibrate.
Rubber substance coating the engine compartment could cause fire.

Engine vibrates whole vehicle when driving, dealer notified, didn't solve the problem
After driving the truck at highway speeds, slow into traffic or lights, release the brake peddle and start to press the gas peddle and the vehicle shuts down. This was reproduced many times after driving over 2 hours, then unable to reproduce, several days later after driving 20 minutes on highway and into traffic, pulled up to an intersection, attempted to cross and the truck stalled in the middle of the intersection with heavy traffic.the toyota dealer and toyota of usa, have stated that they do not have an answer for this problem that has been reported by other truck and 4runner owners. The vehicle is not safe nor reliable to drive at slow nor high speeds due to total system failures.

Not long after my basic warranty expired, i had fraying in my seat belt that was to the point it didn't pass inspection. I took it to a toyota dealer in waco, texas, and they agreed to replace the belt free despite the mileage. Almost a year later, the same problem occurred. I went back to that dealer and they replaced it free even though they didn't have the obligation. About two years later, the same occurred. I have managed to get the truck inspected but i need badly to repair the belt, but i cannot afford it. Although the wear is near the waist, where one figures any fraying might take place, belt after belt should not happen. Also, my floor mat on the driver's side came loose a couple of years ago and it occasionally will bunch up and hit my accelerator and will on other times bunch up under my clutch and i am unable to shift into reverse.

The contact owns a 1998 toyota tacoma. While stopped at a red light, the contact smelled a strong fuel smell coming in through the vents. The dealer was made aware of the failure yet the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The contact stated she had suffered various respiratory complications since the failure began and believed it was caused by the fuel odor. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000. The vin was not available.
Fuel injection system is leaking, cause unknow. Also, whenengine is cold gas leaks fromexhaust system.please give any further details.
I have a 1998 toyota tacoma pickup. Today october 14, 2010 i was driving on a surface street and my gas pedal dropped to the floor as i was driving. The engine revved up to extremely high rpm's. I tried to stop, but my new brakes were barely able to slow me down. I had to put the engine into neutral and park the truck. A friend and i looked the engine over and we found that there was about two inches of play in the accelerator cable were the cable meets the engine. Which would explain why i was having such poor performance problems with the engine.is this covered by any recalls?thank you
The handles on both doors have broken and i am unable to open my truck from the outside.the handles are made of plastic and the plastic has snapped.
Whenvehicle is parked and the emergency parking brake is applied the vehicle rolls as if it is in neutral. Dealer has not seen vehicle.

Transmission failed since new.yh
Transmission failed.yh
Transmission slips out of 1st and 3rd gears in cold weather. Problem occurs sporadically.
We have intermittent loss of shift from drive to neutral, reverse, or park. At times, the truck down-shifts unexpectantly( at cruise speeds ) it also takes a long time to change gears
Possible transmission failure is causing the vehicle to jerk/surge forward.nlm
When driving vehicle and attempting to park the shift interlock solenoid failed.vehicle difficult to put in park and remove key.when re-started difficult to get out of park.transmission would get stuck in reverse, drive and park and was difficult or impossible to get out of gear.toyota claimed not covered with powertrain warranty, no reason given for component failure.created potentially hazardous driving situation.
Chasis/leaf spring/rear axle is defective, the vehicle leansover a one inch degree to the drivers side, no one has to be in the vehicle, the dealer replaced the spring and fixed up the bed level, vehicle still leans over one half inch without anyone in. Dealer contacted six times or more and cannot duplicate the problem.
Vehicle has a clutch chatter problem which could cause other damages. Dealer has replaced 4 clutches/ 4 pressure plates, and 2 fly wheels. But defect still occurs. Dealer claims it is normal characteristic. Please provide further information.
Clutch malfunctioned.yh
When accelerating in 2nd gear there is a bad vibration(2000-2500 rpm).it also "clunks" when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear.the higher the rpm the worse it "clunks".vehicle purchased in november 1999.taken to dealer twice regarding problem.dealer says it is "normal".i am concerned that the transmission synchronizers are worn out and want to get problem resolved while covered under 60,000 mile drivetrain warranty.
Front restraint belts are not long enough for the vehicle, and the dealer tells consumer to pay for extentions if they don't fit.
Seat belts lock up and will not release and will not retract and the strap is coming apart.
Seat belts are frayed and lock up. Sr5 extra cab- drivers side and rear seat belts are not working
The wiring harness cable from the sensors to the computer burnout and the seatbelts doesn't respond right especially with his unraveling and doesn't lock good or pool and the master cylinder it's not function correctly either it's like it's not stopping the brakes are not stopping i know the vehicle is old but still this is a defect and very has for the drivers of all the vehicles my 1998 toyota tacoma sr5 2.4 liter 2 wheel drive
I bought this truck in march2014 and i have hadnothing but problems with the driver seat belt shredding or fraying and because of that i cant pull the seat belt through to hook it. I also notice the front passenger seat belt is also starting to come apart to. I called toyota main office and they said they cant do nothing about it. I want toyota to replace both front seat belts . I have seen a few complaints regarding the driver seat belt on this web site.. I have had only toyota cars and trucks forever.
I have a 1998 toyota tacoma truck and have no complaints except the seat belt came out and will not go back in and i fasten the seat belt but i know that it needs to have a new one on it. Tried to find one but have not found one . Where could i get one to put on it that would not cost so much. I'm on a fixed income since my husband died recently.

I took it to a toyota dealer in waco, texas, and they agreed to replace the belt free despite the mileage. Almost a year later, the same problem occurred. Driver's side seat belts are abnormally frayed, below the buckle. Passenger side are slightly frayed as well, but not as severely. Dealer inspected and said there are no recalls. Similar vehicles i have owned that are older and have many more miles have never had this problem, therefore i am sure this is not normal wear and is likely unsafe if an accident should occur.
The driver side seat belt started fraying and after while locked up ,would not retracted or pull out.now the passenger side is fraying and now it is locked up, it does not matter if the engine is running or not it will not retracted or pull out.
Both the driver's side and passenger side seat belt have various problems - fraying, jamming, too short, not retracting, not extending. Dealer wants $500 to repair the driver's side alone.this is too much.they should fix it for free or a reasonable price considering nit is faulty and should have been recalled.
The contact owns a 1998 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the front driver, front passenger, and rear passenger seat belts failed to buckle and required excessive force. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the seat belt failed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised that the vin was not included in any recalls. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
My seat belt are defective. I am so used to wearing them. I bought the vehicle used and have since found out there is a recall on the seatbelt. I would like them replaced for safety reasons if possible . Thanks
Excess fraying both dises
The contact owns a 1998 toyota tacoma. While parked, the contact noticed that the driver side seat belt was shredding and tearing. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician advised that the seat belt would have to be replaced. The seat belt was replaced and after the repair, the seat belt began to shred and tear again. The vehicle was not further repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
The contact owns a 1998 toyota tacoma.the contact stated that the front seat belt webbing has unraveled.as of october 2, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle.the current and failure mileages were 115,000. * updated 12/12/07 the consumer stated contacted dealer and dealer informed not under manufacturer's warranty. Driver side seatbelt is too short.this is my third toyota truck.the first two had ample and equal seatbelt links on both the driver and passenger sides of the truck.the 1998 tacoma driver side seatbelt is much shorter than the passenger's side.this appears to be a manufacturing flaw as another 1998 tacoma truck measured by the dealer has the same irregularity, but the 1999 truck does not.regional representative from toyota sofar saidthat only option is to add an extender.this is unacceptable both for safety and convenience reasons.since neither the 1987/994 or 1999 trucks have this problem, i would like it repaired and prefereably before i freeze to death in buffalo because i can't get the seatbelt around me when i have my winter coat on.please help quickly.
Driving at 30mph when my vehicle was involved in a 4 vehicle accident. My vehicle had moderate intrusion into engine compartment with no airbag deployment. Driver side seat belt did not catch causing chest to hit steering wheel and knees to hit dash

The cover of the female part of the buckle on the driver' s and passenger's side is tearing. In jan of 98, the cover on both buckleswere replaced.
Consumer was driving at approx 20 mph hit another vehicle head on.seat belt did not hold, locked up.due to this defect,it caused the consumer to hit windshield ,shattered glass. Also caused neck injuries. Toyota claims cannot find problem, and claims air bag should not have deployed.

The seatbelt jammed in the "closed" position and i was only able to deploy it for restraining purposes with considerable effort.the belt has frayed along the front leading edge and this could be jamming the retractor mechanism.the belt has so frayed - just from this jam - i will have to have it replaced immediately before i can operate the vehicle.

Brakes failed, bumper was smashed from impact at 5-10 mph.
When weather temperature drops to 30 or below the brakes start to act up. There are no brakes until the truck is warmed up. The brakes seem to grab on flatroads but going down even the slightest hill and the brakes lock. Being a girl, i though i needed new brakes.i took the truck to the dealer and had a brake job done.the next year the temps did not drop to 30 degrees .the winter was mild. This year it is cold again and the brakes are acting up again.with all the toyota problems,i though i should report it.especially as being a girl, the dealer does not take me seriously.i see on the internet that this is continued problem with many toyota owners.your system will not except the vn number, so here it is [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Hello, my vehicle is a 1998 toyota tacoma. It has approx. 152,000 miles on it. The issue i am having with the vehicle is primarily frame rust, the frame is beginning to look like "swiss cheese." the frame of the vehicle is in terrible shape, the spare tire even fell out due to rust. I called toyota to inquire about the frame rust and was told that there is no warranty to cover this. I searched online and it says that 1995-2000 toyota tacoma's were under recall for frame rust because the rust would make the vehicles unsafe to drive because the structural integrity of the vehicle would be compromised. So i searched around and found that my vehicle is currently 15 years, 4 months old and that toyota would not cover the vehicle. I believe that rust is an ongoing issue and takes several months/years to develop, it is not something which occurs overnight. The rust looks mainly to be surface rust on the outside, but in reality the rust has developed from the inside-out and rotted the frame out, therefore it was not caught earlier. I hope this recall is extended, there are many rusted toyota tacomas listed for sale from the 1995-2000 model year, which also have the same issue.the issue was caused by toyota's 3rd party supplier not properly rust proofing the frames, therefore making them highly susceptible to rust.i hope that toyota does something to resolve the issue.
While driving at any speed the steering and the vehiclevibrate. When applyingthe brakes the vehicle will be vibrating. Contacted dealer, can't determine the problem.

"1995 through 2000 model year tacoma frame rust corrosion warranty extension"received a letter from toyota attached. Requested frame inspection attached.requested another frame inspection attached.my vehicle case was not handled consistent with the intent of toyota's program nor was i contacted by their impartial services group (isg).as a result the safety of me and my passengers has been neglected be not allowing me the safety benefits of their warranty offerings.
Driving down a busy boulevard, my wheel fell off and my vehicle slammed on the ground. I am lucky to not have killed anyone, and am still afraid to drive my vehicle. Faulty ball joints + rusted frames make this vehicle potentially very dangerous. Toyota initiated a program to buy tacomas back directly from consumers, but i was not notified of the program. Now i am stuck with a potentially incredibly dangerous truck.
I had exited the freeway for fuel.i had to come to a full stop and then make a left turn to go over the freeway.as i made the turn, the right front wheel broke a ball joint and the tire/wheel swung out at a right angle to the car.given the miles on the car, i accepted the failure of the part.however, the initial failure was repaired by a toyota dealer.yesterday, 6/30/15, the same failure occurred.i came to a stop to make a right turn.the same thing occurred.my right front wheel broke a ball joint and the tire/wheel turned at 90 degrees to the side of the truck.something is wrong with the steering system.to break a ball joint, installed by a dealer, after about 13 months is unreasonable.my truck is regularly maintained and i've asked my mechanic to keep an eye on the ball joints after my first problem.he regularly inspected them and kept them greased.
1998 toyota tacoma 4x4 reg cabthere is a knock and play in the steering wheel.most toyota dealerships say it is normal and say nothing is wrong. The problem has been isolated to the slip joint in the main steering column coming loose.this was done by a toyota service tech.the problem was taken to another dealership with this information and was fixed but they say it will most likely happen again due no change in design by toyota.the slip joint is crimped over the shaft, and after use it becomes loose causing play in the steering wheel.
Power steering failed.yh
Dealer went for a test ride, and said the noise was coming from tire wear. I refused new tires there, and went home to tell my husband, who spent his lunch hour pointing out the faulty rack and pinion. They then put it on the lift a second time to agree with us that the tie rods and rack and pinion needed replacement.we opted to see another repairman locally who was amazed to see the rack and pinion so rusted, it has been described as looking worse than the bilge on a lobster boat. The boot has been retaining water and the whole assembly was saidto be highly corrosive. People need to be alerted. This truck drives in snow anddirt roads not across the ocean.we will be contacting the dealer again tomorrow to see what they think of the situation.
Had to have rack an dpinion steeringends replaced b/c boot was holding water.toyota advised truck had been in high water, truck has never been in high water.truck is now making the same noise it made when rack ends faild before.rack ends were rusted out.
Dealer advised that truck had sat in water for a large amount of time for grease to escape rack end boots.truck has never been in deep water, only dirt roads.rack ends are rusted and need replacement.truck has been through two sets of tires both being the type supplied by toyota with the vehicle.we get about 12000 miles on 50000 mile tires, truck wears tires as if faulty front end parts.tie rod end on drivers side bad, probably cause of tire wear, been to dealer several times to complain about tire wear. Never inspected tie rod ends or shocks, dealer said they get many complaints on tire wear on these trucks.( dot number: tire size: 265/75r/15 )
Was experiencing vibration in the front end of the truck. Took truck to dealer and they looked at it. They said that the reason for the vibration was the tires were out of round and that the "left outer wheel bushin" that is associated with the rack was excessively worn. They estimated that it would be $1300 to replace the entire rack since toyota does not sell the individual bushing, nor does it have a procedure to replace the bushing if an after market one is available. The truck was under warranty at the time but toyota quality care denied the claim because the bushing wear was deemed "noraml wear and tear". Because i would ahve to pay for the cost the dealer said that i should be able to drive with the rack the way it is "for awhile??!"

Massive accelerated corrosion of the frame including leaf springs which has now punctured the gas tank leading to gasoline leaking.there have been hundreds of complaints as far as i can tell for the same reason.however, there are no recalls by toyota and the company and dealership are saying they are not responsible!

Frame is very bad shape due to rust problem and broken
When truck was on lift at meineke, they discovered the frame near the back wheels was rusted through so that it was unsafe to drive it.immediately, i took it to the toyota dealership where they confirmed that it was unsafe to drive for the same reason. There had been a recall on toyota body frames when i had taken it to the toyota dealership two different times in two different years and was told the body was fine.one year and 2 or 3 months after the recall was over, i am told that my truck's frame rust makes it unsafe to drive.i only have 123,595 miles on it and expected to drive it for at least 2-400,000 more. Every auto service personnel that has ever looked under the hood has told me i have kept it in very good shape.shouldn't toyota extend the recall in my particular case?i have all the service records from the time i bought it in 2006 when it had 64004 miles.
Frame of truck from front cab mount to back side of rear spring perches is rusted and perforated making truck unsafe to drive.
I recently bought my 98 toyota tacoma extended cab 44. I knew nothing of any frame rust problems or any other problems that toyota's had. Now i am the proud owner of a good looking truck that i just found out is not only unsafe to drive off road but on road also.yesterday i found that the rear shock, where it mounts on top,had broke throw the frame and after inspecting and doing a quick welding repair just to make it home, that the frame had previously been repaired in other places but only welded new metal over the existing rusting frame.no one has made any attemy to inform me of any problems and from what i'm seeing now it's past the 15 yr deadline. I bought a toyota because of its dependability but what good is it to have a dependable engine when the frame wasn't prepared to hold up to normal conditions without rusting into.

The tacoma has developed significant rust around the passenger side rear lead spring bracket.the bracket is beginning to pull away from the frame and the vehicle is no longer usable as a result, this is very discouraging as this vehicle has been maintained well and currently has 250k miles on it.all other parts of this vehicle is in very good shape.
1998 toyota tacoma with significant frame rust. Vehicle falls within the "frame rust corrosion perforation warranty extension" program offered by toyota. The program offers to buy back toyota tacomas that fail their "inspection" dealer actually dented the frame during inspection due to weak frame secondary to rust. They did not put a hole in it therefore returning it to me, saying the vehicle is safe. Contacted corporate toyota and basically got blown off as they stated the dealer did not put a hole in it during inspection. Personally, any vehicle which you can dent the frame in critical areas with a 12 oz hammer with "light to moderate" swings is unsafe. At this point i can only hope i do not get into a crash with this vehicle. I am filing this complaint as i believe they are overlooking a potentially serious problem with the structural integrity of this vehicle.
The contact owns a 1998 toyota tacoma. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced severe corrosion which resulted in the front driver side wheel detaching from the vehicle. I bought a 1998 toyota tacoma 4x4 automatic with 106995 on the odometer and i am having a hard time getting it inspected because of the right side rear frame is tested to bad
My vehicle has been inspected each year and properly maintained. Inspections and other maintenance have frequently occurred at toyota dealers by toyota technicians. My vehicle was undergoing annual inspection december 2016 at a non-toyota garage and i was advised of a failed inspection due to structural integrity issues caused by severe rusting on the frame of the truck.i was also advised to cease driving the truck as it is now considered a danger to myself and, i assume, to other motorists. The technician suggested that there may have been a recall for this problem. I called toyota several times and was ultimately told i had run out of time. I pleaded that i have owned the vehicle for over ten years and would have taken advantage of any recalls had i received any information of one, but no one is able to explain to me why i was not notified of the problem. A problem like this does not crop up within a year and have the ability to hide from honest technicians concerned with the integrity of their inspections/maintenance and the safety of motorists. This vehicle is frequently used for travel over distances greater than 50 miles, one way, and to find out that i have been operating such a dangerous vehicle over such long distances and posing such a danger to myself and countless other motorists because of the silence and/or negligence of toyota technicians is unacceptable and reprehensible. My vehicle is otherwise in great running condition with many new parts that show pride of ownership. I must demand that toyota replace the defective frame on my vehicle to restore the safety and peace of mind that motorists have a right to expect when they get behind the wheel of a car.
Frame rusted out causing leafspring to sink into frame.
There is an accelerated and abnormal amount of corrosion and rust showing up on undercarriage of the vehicle.rear leaf springs have lost rubber bumper due to rust, and suspension/frame make noises due to stress on frame which is the result of rust/corrosion.i am the original owner to this vehicle, having purchased it new and having always had it in colorado a mostly dry climate not conducive to rust/corrosion.i have it at the same dealership i bought it from multiple times per year for service, and it is still under 150k orig miles.i have never been informed by the toyota dealership reps. About concerns with rust/corrosion issues, nor has any company staff ever acknowledged any concerns over these issues, or has the company reached out to inform me of potential problems.in no way, shape or form has toyota ever advised me of any recall, concerns or problems. I have lived at my current residence and had the same phone numbers for the last 15 years and this has been in the stevenson toyota dealership records this whole time.this is extremely concerning due to the mountain driving conditions here in colorado, and speed at which this rust/corrosion is expanding and making the vehicle weak and unsafe to operate.apparently more owners of this vehicle and model year are experiencing the very same issues and have not been notified by toyota.this appears to be a prolific issue that needs immediate attention.

Frame perforation aka rust through problem failed pa inspection this week. Garage notified me of known tacoma frame rust problems. Toyota dealer says its too late but i was not aware of this hazard that toyota seems to be well aware of. Body shop will not touch this problem of rust through above spring leaf mounts due to liability concerns. This seems like toyota's problem to solve. Please help!
Rust recall toyota car dealership unwilling to "goodwill" fix frame due to not applying rust chemicals on to the frame
My son was driving his 1998 toyota tacoma down the highway when the frame separated in half. Luckily he was able to slowly pull the vehicle over to the side and get it off of the road without harm to himself or others. The truck was later trailered to a friends house where a temporary brace was welded on.we later brought the truck to a dealership who took one look at the frame and said we were not driving that truck home it was extremely rusted beyond its years. The dealership gave us a rental car for the evening until they heard back from toyota who refused to replace the frame because the program had expired. Unfortunately i am on able to purchase a new vehicle for my son. I did my due diligence when i purchased the truck and pulled a carfax on it and there was no report of a recall, i did not look underneath to check for frame damage as the truck had a clean title and there did not seem to be a reason.

I was told today by an insurance appraiser that the frame on my 1998 toyota tacoma extended-cab, 4x4 pickup truck is rusted so badly that it's unsafe to drive and could very possibly break on rough road conditions. Such a failure could render the vehicle uncontrollable and cause injury or death.his evaluation was simply that "this truck is now junk".he was surprised that the impact of the collision damage he was assessing didn't break the frame.i bought this truck new in august of 1998 ($27000+ window sticker) and it now has 46,766 miles on it.anecdotal evidence suggests that this rust is not repairable and that the manufacturer will not accept responsibility for this problem.this truck has been well maintained and driven carefully by a mature driver.

The frame of my 98 toyota tacoma is severely rusted that caused it to crack in the rear viewable through the rear passenger wheel. After noticing it i looked under to see that the entire rear part is rusted and goes to about the rear of the cab. I bought it a little more than a year ago from a man who maintain it very well, and i have also maintained to regularly. This concerns me because i just started college and do not have the money to replace the frame and will not be able to sell it the way it is, because i would not be able to get anywhere near what it would be worth with a good frame.
Frame broke in half on passengers side ahead of rear wheel.frame rusted 2005.frame rusted 2007.frame hasapproximately $1000 of welding done to it. Won't pass inspection in 2008.
I own a 1998 toyota tacoma that should fall into their rusty frame buyback but was told it didn't qualify because of a massachusetts reconstructed title. The truck has been on the road for approximately 3 years since the rebuild. The frame is rusted through in some places and the passenger side body mount has rusted away from the frame . It seems to me the frame rust has nothing to do with the fact that the truck was in an accident and the recall should be in effect, probably with a lower reimbursement due to the salvage title. If the point is to get unsafe vehicles off the road, a rusty frame is a rusty frame whether the truck has been rebuilt or not.
1998 toyota tacoma frame rotted away at rear springs and elsewhere.
Severely corroded frame rails on a 1998 toyota tacoma 4x4. Purchased used from a maine used car dealer with 121k miles in aug 2007. While replacing the muffler and tail pipe in december 2007 i noticed severe rust and corrosion of the frame rails and cross members on the frame of this truck. Upon closer inspection of the frame, i noticed several areas where the previous owner or dealer had repair patches welded to the outside of the frame to shore up the weaker areas.both drivers and passenger side frame rails have huge holes or cracks where the frame has rotted away. The patch jobs that were done range from a couple inches to 14 inches. Rust proofing was used to hide/protect what was left of the frame. Rust proofing now not able to hide the corrosion or the large pieces that are flaking off the frame showing new holes. Vehicle unsafe to haul anything or even to drive. Unsafe condition could result in serious personal injury or death.

I owned a toyota tacoma, 1998 king cab with 4wd up until oct 07, when i had to trade it in or junk it.the frame was so rusted out that one bad bump was going to land me in a ditch or out of control. I researched this online, found that toyota was not doing anything about it. I turned it into my toyota dealer, the truck had only 97,000 miles on it, was worth thousands but only got 2500 on trade in due to its frame condition.

The contact owns a 1998 toyota tacoma.the frame of the vehicle is rusted and corroded where the rear springs hook to the frame.the contact has taken the vehicle to toyota three times and they have given him the run around.he was initially informed that toyota would make a one hundred percent repair.then he was informed that they would make a fifty percent repair.the dealer finally stated that he would be responsible for the repairs.the cost for a short term repair was over $2,500.he took the vehicle to an inspection agency and was informed that toyota's remedy would have only been temporary.toyota offered to purchase the vehicle after the repair for half the market value.the vehicle could not pass inspection.the contact has photos of the vehicle and also of how toyota was going to repair the vehicle.the current mileage was 80,000 and failure mileage was 78,000.
- the contact has asked for the exact verbiage of his email entered as his complaint:toyota has instituted a warranty enhancement program for 1995-2000 toyota tacomas for frame rust.toyota is buying back the trucks because of safety problems.there have been numerous accidents resulting from collapsing frames that have rusted out.they are doing this to avoid a nhtsa recall.my truck has a title that lists prior damage, and they will not take my truck back.they claim that the truck has been altered.the truck was repaired using toyota tacoma factory parts, and not aftermarket parts.the truck was repaired in year 2002, but the insurance company chose not to spend the money on repairs.if my truck was newer, the insurance company would have spent the money on repairs, the repair would not appear on the title, and toyota would qualify this truck for buy back.the only difference between my truck and a newer truck receiving the same repair is that one is older than the other, and the insurance company chose to repair the newer vehicle.my 1998 tacoma was professionally repaired and inspected by the massachusetts police.the truck looks brand new except for the frame rust.i believe that toyota is trying to avoid a nhtsa recall by this warranty enhancement program.still, there are many vehicles like mine on the roads with frame rust waiting for an accident that toyota chooses to ignore.updated 07/15/08 updated 07/15/08

After leasing my 1998 tacoma 4x4 for 3 years, i chose to buy it at the end of the lease.i have maintained it religiously for the entire 9 years. I took it for its annual pa inspection expecting that with only 48,002 miles there would be few if any problems.in 2006 there were no problems, no indication of any rusting or frame / under carriage problems.my mechanic has informed me that the truck is a danger to drive because the undercarriage is rusted through & there large, gaping holes throughout.i have never heard of this problem until i began researching it.a vehicle that i had intended to keep for many more years is now worthless and a danger to drive.after reading the other complaints, i believe that this is a wide spread problem with the toyota tacomas.

Frame rotted on truck.exstensive repair needed to make frame safe.
1998 toyota tacoma pickup with major rot on frame. A 2 foot piece of frame fell out from under the wheel well and the other side was cracked almost through. The truck was not repairable.
I own a 1998 toyota tacoma 2wd with 105,000 miles on it and the frame is corroded so extensively that i couldput my finger through the rust. I bought it new in 1998 and maintained it regularly. The last time that i put it on a jack the frame partially collapsed where it was resting on the jack. After further inspection i found severe corrosion throughout the frame. The bumper bracketswere barely holding up the bumper. It had been a reliable truck ,and this was the second tacoma that i have owned. Both were equally reliable. However, the problem has given me quite a scare. I don't dare haul anything heavy in the bed ,and the idea of towing something with it is simply out of the question. The body was still in pretty good shape with a little corrosion on the front of the hood from a stone chip. I just didn't understand how the problem could have become so severe. I would expect a certain mount of rust down there, but this was more severe than i have ever seen.my best guess was that the vehiclewas almost worthless even though everything elsewasin satisfactory condition. Until i discovered this problem, i had expected to keep it for at least 5 more years.

1998 toyota tacoma. Letter sent regarding complaint against local toyota dealership *tgwtoyota did not cover the frame of the vehicle because the truck had a salvaged title.
Excessive frame rust on my 1998 toyota tacoma lead to the cab breaking from it body mounts and crashing onto the frame. In addition, all but one of the frame mounts that hold the gas tank in place have since broken causing the tank to drop. Also, frame shows rust penetration throughout and large diameter holes are visible in the load bearing members. Suspension mounts, shackles, and the accessory frames hardware is severely corroded as well.

This is a 1998 toyota tacoma with 107,000 miles. After repeatedly noticing rust flakes on the ground under the vehicle, it was taken to severalmechanics and a body shop for assessment. There was consensus that the frame was completely rusted through, and that there wasn't sufficient intact metal left to enable it to be repaired. They also agreed that that it would be extremely expensive to replace the frame (estimates ranged from $3,500 to $10,000), so the vehicle was essentially "totaled." they all warned that it was extremely hazardous to drive, since the slightest accident or road hazard could cause the frame to break and the vehicle to split apart and/or buckle. This vehicle is not old enough, nor does it have enough miles on it, to warrant this massive failure of frame integrity. It has been well maintained and not driven under any conditions that could account for the failure; thus, it seems self-evident that it is a fundamental defect in the manufacture of the vehicle that has resulted in this dangerous condition.
The frame on my 1998 toyota tacoma regular cab 4x4 pickup truck is severely rusted.in some places, the metal is extremely thin because of this.the rest of the truck, other than the frame, is in good shape.the amount of frame deterioration, especially in the rear portion of the frame, seems excessive given the age of the vehicle and the care i have given it. Fortunately, there are no holes in my frame yet, but others have not been as lucky.

I took my truck for pa inspection and i got a call at work that my truck had failed due to the frame is rotted and there is a lot of surface rust. The repair facility cut out the piece of frame and replaced it with new metal.
I have a 1998 toyota tacoma 4x4 4cyl and i have recently noticed that the frame rot was so bad that the rear portion looks like swiss cheese.the frame has actually gotten so bad it broke away from the leaf spring mounts and is no longer connected.i am very upset because the car is only 10 years old and i used to link toyota with quality.this could be my last toyota because i feel cheated.
I have a 1998 toyota tacoma and the cap on the bed started to hit the cab of the truck one day. I investigated the problem and found that the frame had completely rotted away on both sides. I have attempted to fix the problem for a temp fix but there is nothing good of the frame to weld anything to. Due to the nature of this type of component failure it will most likely result in death or serious injury. I do not have the money to replace the frame nor do i think its expected of any of us with this problem to pay for the manufactures defect!! so as for now i am stuck with a truck that is worthless. How many people are going to have to die from this before something is done!!!!

I was advised they still had the previous owners information even though i purchased it from a dealer on 2/11/2005.i never received a recall notice and never heard anything about it and was told they would not do anything to fix it. I bought a brand new 1998 toyota tacoma 4x4 reg cab 4 cyl. Standard transmission and my mechanic told me my frame was breaking apart.. He did the best he could to weld the frame but told me it probable only had a year left.. This disappoints me terrible.. I always trusted toyota vehicles and recommend them to everyone, but i afraid than i no longer can do so.. I took very good care of my vehicle and toyota let me down.. My next vehicle will be a ford f 150 with a c channel frame not boxed like the tacoma... I would recommend you get a handle on this problem or you will lose major sales...it pains me to write this... I always loved toyota. Also the exhaust manifold had to be replaced 3 time in this 10year period... Wake up...
The frame of my 98 toyota tacoma truck has rotted out.the truck is in decent shape and runs well but the frame is rotted.i'm told drains were not properly designed to remove excessive water and the vehicle was not properly protected for resistance to rust and rotting.it's dangerous. I had to weld the frame once before as well.
Frame has rusted out at an unusually young age and mileage for this vehicle.holes are now visible through the vehicle's frame and state inspection rejected.

Frame on my truck is rusting to a point of being a safety issue . Toyota needs to replace this so vehicle will be safe .
Purchased 1998 toyota tacoma 4wd truck october 2012. Vehicle had been recalled for frame rust and was serviced by a toyota dealership 05/25/2011 and frame and under carriage was inspected, cleaned, prepared and coated with undercoating. Dealership advised the problem was corrected. Mileage at time was 161,757. In late 2012 rust spots developed again and continued to worsen until the frame completely rusted through and broke above the right rear wheel in the vicinity of the shock absorb-er bracket which also was rusted through. There are various other rust problem areas on the frame and suspension parts and another frame rust through is evident on the left side of the vehicle above the rear tire at the shock absorb-err bracket.. December 2016, mileage 211,927the vehicle was considered to be unsafe for operation and taken off the public roadways by the current owner after the frame broke into while turning into the driveway. The vehicle was placed out of service due to fear of being held liable for death, injury or dismemberment to self, person or persons due to knowinglycontinued operation of the vehicle would be unsafe. After extensive research of frame rust through problems, the toyota dealership that handled the recall in 2011 was contacted in person by the current owner on february 21, 2017 at 1:30 pm and was advised by the dealership service department that the enhanced warranty was only good for 15 years from the date the vehicle was first purchased new and placed in service which was april 1998 and had expired in april 2013. As the current owner of the vehicle i was never notified by toyota that a warranty had ever existedand would soon expire and nor myself or the previous owner was ever notified to have the vehicle reinspected by toyota to make sure the problem had not reoccurred and vehicle was safe for continued operation.

Frame rusted out causing leafspring to sink into frame.
My vehicle's frame is dangerously rusting out.i heard there was a recall and when i called toyota about two years ago the said i had just missed the cut off.since then it had gotten progressively worse.the body mounts have separated from the frame and where the leaf spring is attached is getting ready to separate.these are also holes in the frame.if anybody has any advise would be greatly appreciated.does not seem right that they could have a recall and i was never contacted and when i contacted them that they told me i missed it by only months?

1. Front wheel alignment shifts under load(in spec) as much as 1/4 in. This toe out causes excessive and dangerous tire wear. Tires came apart after 3000 mi. The vehicle is hard to control with toe out of this magnitude. I have to get the alignment done with a load in the truck to be able to safely steer it and get some respectable tire wear. Grinding noise in the front end suspension and the tires are wearing excessively (tire treads were visible).nlm
Front suspension lower ball joint failed while in operation. Resulting in separation from the knuckle, causing a collapse in the suspension and loss of steering control while driving. The collapse happened in traffic and caused other damage to the vehicle including drive shaft and tire damage.
At speeds over 45, front end vibrates badly and is hard to control. I have replaced the tires which worked until the tires had 5000 miles of them, balanced tires, and had front end alignments. The toyota dealership is aware of the problem, but cannot come up with a solution to correct the problem. I know of other tacoma owners with similar problems.( dot number: tire size: 31x10.5 15 )

This truck is the center piece of my life. My 1998 toyota tacoma was the perfect vehicle for me. I still own mine but it is tough to drive knowing that if i was in a crash my life could be threatened due to the lack of frame rigidity. I need this truck to last me until i am out of college because there are no funds for me to purchase a different one. This defect was brought to by attention during a recent snowstorm when driving home from one of many jobs. I ran over a shallow pot hole and heard a clunk. The vehicle began to drive very oddly causing concern to me. I had my mechanic look it over the next day and he explained that he has seen many of these trucks with the same type of issue. My isolated issue involves the attaching site of the rear leaf spring. The mechanic quoted my $1000 dollars with no guarantee of repair. I could not do this because i do not have the money to put into it. I took it to another mechanic who is a family member who fixed it and showed me the multiple other weak spots with in the frame. In these multiple areas the frame is so weak that if you touch it pieces fall off. He tried his best to reinforce it but other spots still lack strength. Not safe and not going to sell!!!!!!
Driver's side rear leaf spring broke last year. I had it repaired/replaced at a local spring shop. Now the same spring on passenger side has broke at the same place. This affects handling of vehicle and leaves the spring hanging by a factory clamp which if it breaks the rest of the way could cause accident.
I own a toyota tacoma, 1998 model. One of the rear leaf springs broke. Part of it shifted sideways in its location and began to puncture the fuel tank. Upon searching for a replacement on the used market, i learned that number one, all of these tacomas develop broken leaf springs, and number two, all used springs have been absorbed to repair broken ones on trucks still in use. Number three, toyota changed the configuration of the rear spring assembly from a three leaf to a four leaf assembly to try to deal with the problem, but made the retrofit a cost borne by the consumer. Even a parts employee of a toyota dealership agreed that toyota should have had a recall of the tacoma for defective leaf spring design/engineering. The breakage creates an unstable suspension subject to loss of control and if the spring shifts sideways does puncture the fuel tank.

The other day i was driving down the road and hit a small pothole with my 1998 toyota tacoma and the bottom leaf in the drivers side rear leaf spring pack snapped in half. And is now hanging down and it can potentially make contact with my tires sidewall.
My 1998 toyota tacoma had its left rear leaf spring break just in front of the rear differencial. This cause the leafs to twist inwards and rub against the gas tank exposing the bare metal of the tank. Luckly i took the truck to the mechanic before the rubbing against the tank worked its way through potentially causing an explosion with a spark.at this time i will be replacing the leaf springs (after taking some photos). I have also filed a complaint no 2005-12280233 with toyota motor corp. Their position is that i will have to bear the cost of the repair as it is out of warranty. I believe this is a potentially unsafe condition and a recall to check leaf springs should be made.

I was traveling south on interstate 35 in fort worth when my front left tire suddenly blew out. After putting on the spare, i examined the faulty tire and found that the entire side wall had blown out, 360 degrees around. The tire still had sufficient tread. I took it to three tire dealers, and they all agreed it was not a standard blow out and was caused by a defective tire. There were no road hazards and i was traveling in fairly heavy traffic, but i was able to come to a stop and make it to the shoulder. After hearing of the problems and injuries/fatalaties that had been associated with this particular type of tire, i decided to replace all four rather than take any chances with my safety. The total cost to replace the four tires totaled just under $600. Furthermore, i've inquired about replacing the wheel as it too was damaged. The cost on that is $368 from the toyota dealer.( dot number: tire size: 265 75r 15 )

I bought a tacoma pick up a couple of years ago.i recently found that one side of my front right tire was extremely damaged down to the steel belts.i took it in to a tire shop and they said i had a very light truck and because i am usually the only passenger the tire worn unevenly.having one person on one side of the truck all the time did this damage.i had to pay for an alignment (adjusted for one passenger), and a new tire.why wasn't i told of this?why isn't the truck built to handle this?i'm sure i'm not the only person driving by myself all the time.is there anyway i can get reimburse for this.my dealer said i wasn't covered for this.shouldn't there be a national recall or notice to customers about this?i could have blown a tire and crashed.please give me some answers to this.

The frame on this vehicle is bad. My wife has had this truck since 1998 and there has never been a recall issued for this frame issue. The frame will eventually break as reported by many other consumers and is it is on the road when this happens could cause an accident. Please issue a recall.
Frame rusted through . Toyota says recall expired . Gow can safety issue of this magnatude expire?

I received a safety recall letter in 2011 regarding a tacoma frame rust corrosion issue.i opened a case and had my toyota inspected on 5/20/11 by a toyota dealership.they said the frame had passed inspection. On 12/02/11 toyota performed a body frame undercoating on the vehicle.fast forward to 2017.i found a small hole in the frame that was inspected by toyota and deemed safe.i contacted toyota and they said since the safety recall on the frame has passed there was nothing they can do about it.the internet is full of other stories of toyota's with rusting frames.i feel it is now unsafe to drive and/or sell to someone.

I bought my '98 toyota tacoma in 2000.since that purchase i have never received a letter regarding any recalls or safely issues.i have only moved once since i purchased this vehicle and that was in 2003.so i feel that toyota made no honest effort to contact me regarding any issues so i should be able to address and have repaired any problems that were recalled such as the corroding frame.this is a serious issue that toyota conveniently let fall through the cracks.
I took my 1998 tacoma in for an inspection at my local dealer in november of 2011. I was told it passed and had only normal surface rust. No compensation in any form was made, not even an undercoating. My vin number fell into the category of being suspect from the manufacturer. I made the dealer aware of this at the time. Now at 190k miles and the 15 yr deadline gone, i have a useless truck that is basically worth nothing as far as i can tell. This issue should have been dealt with in 2011 when they were given the chance. The dealer just sends you on your merry way because they know there is nothing you can do about it. The frame rusts from the inside out. Nothing will fix it. Toyota should be held responsible for the rusty frames.
My frame is rusted and cracked in half. I welded a plate to the frame and used a bolt for the shock mount to replace the busted shock mount. Concerned about the safety of the vehicle as i am waiting for the rest of the frame to break in half as i am driving.
My 1998 toyota tacoma experience unexpected acceleration in 2004. The vehicle was totaled (worth about $12k at the time) due to the bent frame caused by hitting a concrete wall, then another car in a parking lot. My wife, a toyota employee, who was driving the truck, suffered bumps and bruises due to the fact the truck only went about 30 feet before impact. The insurance investigator found no problems with the vehicle, and postulated my wife had her foot on the accelerator. She guaranteed her foot had been on the brake. The vehicle was shrink wrapped until a toyota rep could read the electronics. His response was the same. So was hers.guess what model year toyota began using their electronic throttle control system (etcs)? 1998 - what a surprise. My wife has been vindicated.toyota's problem is not with floor mats or gas pedals that stick. It is with the etcs.

Cruise control is dangerous, when turned on 90% of time it wont enage when button is pressed, if you do not turn power to unit off, it will engage at random and cause great surprise and danger to the driver. Complained to dealer 5 times, unit has been replaced, but same problem with replacement. Manufactuer of truck's only response"all problems are handled by dealers". This is a dangerous situation and needs to be investigated.
Consumer stated that in early morning when hewarmed up vehicle, and switched transmission from park to drive, vehicle suddenly accelerated up to 15 mph without stepping on gas pedal. Also, this problem had happened when he wasbehind another vehicle. He had to step on the brake pedal to stop vehicle.
When the brakes were applied at 40mphon dry pavement, the vehicle accelerated, resulting in a collision.the dealer notified.
The contact owns a 1998 toyota tacoma. The contact stated when driving the vehicle at any speed it would accelerate to over a 200rpm. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they replaced the sensor because of the throddle failure. The repair cost were over $600. The toyota manufacturer was called and representative stated thatthey will call him back but no one called up until the time of the complaint . The failure was 200,000.

Which would explain why i was having such poor performance problems with the engine.is this covered by any recalls?thank you
I started my truck and was slowly driving down a driveway, as i changed from 2nd gear to 3rd gear my vehicle acceleration went from 15mph to 67mph within just a few seconds and there was nothing that i could do but swerve to miss the vehicle in front of me. The engine roared out of control. As a swerved to miss the vehicle in front of me, i was forced into a ditch and the truck rolled over.

I have seen in the news, reports of '07 toyota tacomas accelerating unintentionally. I bought a used 1998 tacoma about four years ago and i have experienced perhaps ten or more incidents of my engine running away to the point i have to put it neutral and kick the gas pedal to stop it. At least twice that has not worked , forcing me to turn off the engine. I notice it happens when i'm downshifting from third to second. I called toyota two years ago and asked if they had heard of this problem from other owners. They said they had not. This is not so much a complaint as it is an fyi to you in case you're still looking into this. Other than that the truck has been very dependable. And since the problem is so intermittent, ( it hasn't happened in a year), i don't feel the need to get rid of it. But i can imagine in the right circumstances this could be a serious safety problem. Please let me know if you or toyota is looking into this.thank you, john t. Pope

The vehicle was in motion on a highway at a speed between 60-65 ml/hr, when i heard something pop. When coming to a stop sign at the off ramp, the steering wheel immediately turned to the right, after pressing on the brakes. I took it to walmart were i purchased the tires and explained to the intake technician of the situation and requested a balancing of all 4 tires, because i thought a weight had fallen off the rim. The auto technician balanced all 4 tires. The receipt stated tiresbalance accepted and complete. No out of balance specifications were indicated.the problem was not resolved. While driving on the highway at 60-65 ml/hr and coming to a stop, the vehicle still pulled to the right immediately when letting go of the steering wheel.i then had the alignment checked by another auto/tire shop. It was found to be out of alignment.the mechanic could not solve the vehicle pulling to the right and swapped the front tires, from right to left.he found the vehicle now pulled to the left. He stated the alignment specifications are correct and that it was a bad tire. The problem with the tire was internal and to contact walmart where you purchased them. Walmart did not check the tire and stated the warranty was not effective at 5/32nd tread depth. Walmart stated they opted out ofmichelin's tire warranty and to contact the manufacturer of the tire directly.i then contacted michelin north america customer care, were they authorized me to take it to another tire dealer who sold michelin tires. I took it to phil long toyota dealer who stated they would process the warranty for this tire.they checked the tire and found that the tire on the left side had an internal separated belt. The company michelin north america is processing the warranty.
