Our 2002 toyota sienna was travelling straight through an intersection at about 35 miles per hour when a 2005 ford mustang travelling in the opposite direction made a poor left turn and impacted the driver's-side rear quarter of our sienna. The surprise and impact combined to push our sienna out of the roadway where it hit a utility pole head on. Airbags on the sienna did not deploy. The sienna has been judged a total loss.

No sumnmary listed for above vehicle.

I had a 2002 toyota sienna xle van with 106,000 miles on it. In march 2009 my son was hit by another driver and the car was totaled. It sustained extensive front and rear damage. None of the airbags deployed. I am concerned that front and side airbags may not deploy in older cars. I bought the car because it had front and side airbags, stability control and an excellent safety rating.the car was expertly and constantly maintained yet the airbags did not work when needed.

I was involved in a 1 car high speed frontal impact collision with a tree in my 2002 toyota sienna mini-van.the airbags failed to deploy leavin both myself and my passenger with significant facial & upper body injuries.

Electronic automatic sliding door failures.july 2011, passenger side (sliding door) electronic outer door handle stopped working.the only way to enter or exit the vehicle is by pushing the button on the door jam or overhead console.then the door stopped opening completely.the motor tries to open the door but seems like the door does not release.it will not open.april 2012, drivers side (sliding door) electronic outer door handle has stopped working.the only way to enter or exit the vehicle is by pushing the button on the door jam or overhead console.the door opens 80% of the time.when it does not work the motor tries to open the door but seems like the door does not release. When the drivers side passenger door does not open the family has to enter or exit through one of the front doors and climb through to the back seats.there is no internal manual override of these doors.this is not safe.in an emergency my family will have to go through the front doors or break and go through the windows.this is a safety hazard.the outside door handles and sliding door mechanisms should be repaired at no charge by toyota.

A rattling noise was heard in the sliding door.the car vibrated when driven at any speed and the ignition switch was defective.the owner was frustrated with all that was happening with little or no results.the check engine light had come on and was taken to the dealer on several occasions for the same problem.the front end was unstable. *sc

The contact owns a 2002 toyota sienna. While driving at approximately 60 mph on a road undergoing construction, the tire pressure indicator light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact pulled over and turned off the ignition. He checked all the tires but could find no problems. A month later, while driving on the same road (no construction this time) at approximately 60 mph, the tire pressure indicator light illuminated on the instrument panel again. The contact inspected the tires again but found no cause for the light. The vehicle had not been inspected at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000. The current mileage was approximately 72,000.

Automatic sliding door on toyota sienna often does not close.even when encouraged "manually" to close, it pulls back several times.if auto feature is turned off, it won't pull closed at all.sliding door on left side won't open from inside.occasionally locks itself so that it can't be opened from outside either, even if all other doors are unlocked.

Power sliding door doesn't close.

Ever since novmber, 2008, my 2002 toyota sienna passenger side power door, has intermittently failed to open either by activating the button on the inside of the door column, by pulling the door handle outside, or the instrument panel door button, or worse, after opening, will not close. The dealer had to reinitialize the ecu in november, 2008, and have had intermittent problems since.now, since at least december, 2012, the sliding door will not open at all by any of the 3 methods and cannot be reinitialized. Also, at times the manual drivers side passenger door, in the past ~ 1 1/2 years will not open either from inside door button release or outside door handle and passengers have to climb over from the front seats to enter or climb over the front seat & console to exit the vehicle. I have been advised by my local toyota dealer that i need to "start with the replacement of the ecu," a part costing $730.00 and about $1000 with instillation. I have read other horror stories that replacing the ecu isn't necessarily the answer and many don't know what the answer is.have there been any auto recalls on these power door mechanisms yet?i see a large volume of the exact same complaints on the internet for these sienna as well as within the nhtsa database.in the event of an emergency evacuation of the vehicles' passengers, as it stands,a catastrophe is waiting to happen.

In 2003, ecu unit was replaced on passenger side rear power sliding door as door would intermittently not open or close.has continued with intermittent problem since replacement until it finally would open by not close.given the very high volume of complaints about this problem on all years of the toyota sienna, i would like for the odi to open an investigation.all you have to do is google "toyota sienna power sliding door problems" and you end up with multiple thousands of hits, with most being chat sites with multiple complaint threads.

All the locks keep unlocking, and locking without anyone in or around the vehicle, because locks are locking and unlocking it is causing the battery to drain. The doors lock and unlock while van is in gear, while driving, and when van is not running without key in ignition. I have 2 children and believe this is a safety issue!

When i attempted to open driver side sliding door it would not open electrically or manually. After several failed attempts to open i cut the cable and was able to then open the door. At this point in time both sliding doors will not open electronically but will open manually.

Sliding doors on both sides have stopped working electronically. The doors must be forced manually and this is very difficult. Toyota will not address this issue.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota sienna. Whenever the charcoal canister or any minor malfunction occurred in the vehicle the traction control was deactivated. The traction control also deactivated when the fuel cap was not replaced properly on the fuel tank. The failure has occurred several times and the dealer stated that they are aware of the defect; yet, they require the contact to come in whenever the check engine light was illuminated. The contact was concerned about the safety risk since it rains in florida and the traction control when activated engaged itself to assist with traction.the contact had to replace the charcoal canister valve. The dealer also stated that the failure was normal and not a danger. The contact is concerned about the safety risk.the failure mileage was 70,000.

Sliding doors on 2002 toyota sienna fail to open.7-17-06: 73,316 miles, both sliding doors will not open due to product defect, repair at dealership.9-22-06: 76,829 miles, sliding door will open but not close, repair at dealership.11-16-07: 92,730 miles, sliding doors not working, repair at dealership.3-13-08: 97,991 miles, passenger sliding door not working, repair at dealership.8-10-2009: 113, 814, passenger sliding door will not open.this vehicle has been in no accidents and well maintained.these doors continually fail.

1. Trunk door latch broken and cannot open. Toyota does not provide a manual trunk release inside the van. 2. Passenger side automatic sliding door would not stay closed. It just kept popping open.

In 2003, i was told theecu unit needed replaced on passenger side rear power sliding door as door would intermittently not open or close. Has continued with intermittent problemuntil it finally wouldn't open nor close. 2002 toyota sienna van.the vehicle computer will sporadically trigger the check engine light to come on based on no actual cause.this occurs around every 5,000 miles.it is typical for this computer failure to begin after 75,000 miles on this year of sienna and toyota's recall only covers vehicles up to 75,000 miles.the computer costs $1,000 to replace.this recall should be expanded to vehicles 10yrs old or less. There is probably an internal memo floating around toyota with a dollar figure attached branzely boasting how much they saved by "smoking" a shorter recall period past the us government.toyota customer services has been hostile toward resolving this complaint.

I was driving the car to take dinner with my familywhen arrive to the restaurant i notice was a lot smog in the motor i open thehoodwas a lot smog so i plug out the battery and i call a mechanic and he tellme the fire was in the power steering pump hedisconnect the cable from the power steering and tellme to bring the car to the dealer because is a safety problem and maybe have a recall. Thats by i want to no if is coverfor the warranty or recall.

Automatic sliding door sometimes will not shut and requires multiple, repeated pushing of the driver's sliding door button until the door shuts.often times, i will have to turn off the engine and crank the engine again and then keep pushing the driver's sliding door button until (if i am lucky), the automatic sliding door closes.this process can take 10 minutes or longer depending on how much time i have when this problem occurs.sometimes, i will turn off the engine and leave the door open for an hour or so before cranking the car again and pushing the button to try to close the automatic sliding door.

Dt: the contact stated thefuses kept blowing.the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop for diagnostic testing. They were unable to duplicate the problem. Then, the contacttook the vehicle to a local dealership twice before they were able to locate the problem. The dealership found the wiring harness in the dashboardmelted, causing the fuses to blow out.no repairs have been made.

Consumer purchased vehicle on august 4,2001, and on aug 6 vehicle caught on fire.consumer was driving at approximately 30 mph when power steering failed, and could not turn steering wheel. Consumer then noticed smoke. ,was able to pull toside and get childrenout of vehicle. Flames were coming from underneathvehicle. Engine totally melted, and possibly was a total loss. Toyota mechanic and fire department feel it might have been a electrical fire. Please provide further information.

I backed out of my driveway onto the road. I shifted from reverse to drive. I put my foot on the gas pedal and did not experience typical acceleration. I took my foot off the gas pedal completely. Then i put my foot back on the gas pedal and pushed down harder than normal to see if i got a response. At this point the engine began to rev. Then i had to put my foot on the brake to prevent the car from moving forward. Even with my foot on the brake the engine continue to rev and the car was still moving forward. I put the car in neutral and with my foot off the gas pedal the engine continue to rev.i then depressed the gas pedal with my foot briefly and took my foot off and the engine stopped revving at this point. I put it in drive and had no problems with it after that point. While the vehicle was revving my left foot was not touching or near the gas pedal. The floor mat was not in the way. And my right foot was free and unencumbered.there was no traffic around me so i was able to fully concentrate on the issue and did not hit anyone or anything.

I am not alone in this issue. Just google it.i have had an issue with my engine light being on consistently since i have bought this vehicle, brand new. I have spent hundreds of dollars, endless hours and a lot of anxiety and frustration. When i lived in ohio, it was not a "big deal" because there were no emission requirements. When i moved to arizona, it became a nightmare. I have had several services by toyota on the van. I have paid hundreds of dollars for what they tell me is the problem and it still has not been fixed. I read other peoples stories online and the same "remedies. Suggested by toyota and their computer readouts" that cost hundreds, sometime thousands of dollars and it is still not fixed. The safety issue arises, when is the engine light a real issue and when is it just toyotas manufacturing defect? there is no way to tell.i am campaigningand willing to organize a social media recall. I am tired and out of money for repairs that do not work.it is time for toyota to admit the issue and fix it.thank you.

Oil sludge: it took some doing but toyota finally did pay for a new engine.

Purchase 2002 sienna ce in june 2002.have leak in top radiator hose where it joins the engine.looses coolant over several weeks.brought to toyota dealer where purchased and they refused to replace the hose.installed a new clamp.now 3 months later the problem is back.i believe this is a bad part that should be replaced under the warranty.the dealer is giving me the run around.

Toyota sienna engine fire.the consumer inquired when the results of the fire investigation would be published.

I own a 2002 toyota sienna.the vehicle was purchased new from magic toyota in edmonds wa.the van has 20000 miles on it and is now in need of a new engine.i have had it serviced but apparently the toyota engines have an oil sludge build up problem which destroys the engine if it occurs.toyota is uncertain at this juncture if they are going to repair the engine which is still under warranty.i had it serviced on 11/20/02 at magic toyota.four weeks later the engine is dead lined with blue smoke, poor compression, and a knock.i have recently read that toyota engines from 2000 on were having this problem.i am also understanding that the state of idaho and possibly california are formulating a class action lawsuit on this issue.toyota is claiming that it is an owner maintenance issue not a defect.i request to file an official complaint against toyota in reference to this engine defect.they are not standing good for it.an engine with 20,000 miles on it should not be dead lined. Ts

The oil light illuminated.the vehicle was taken to the dealer on 5/28/2003 and it was determined that there was sludge in the engine and it had to be replaced.the vehicle would not function with the current engine.*nlm

The engine locked up.

My 2002 sienna was diagnosed with oil sludge at 73,000 miles.dealer says it cannot replace engine at their cost without receipts to prove oil changes. Since we did the changes ourselves we have no receipts.

My 2002 sienna has 26,000 miles on it and has a loud engine knocking when accelerating at certain speeds.it has been doing it for about the last 6000 miles.at 20,000 miles, scott clarkes toyota in charlotte told me to use a better grade gasoline, with no results.at 24,000 miles, they told me i have spark knock and need to drive the car at higher speeds more often. (i drive mostly in the city). Reading the other complaints about sludge, i think this is related, since they told me my oil was sludgey too.i think this problem needs to be investigated and recalled.

Engine oil sludge forming in camshaft carrier and under oil filler cap after only 35k miles! i bought this sienna brand new for $32000 and perform maintenance religiously, changing oil & filter every 4000 - 5000. Yet, last week on a routine oil change i noticed black gritty deposits caked underneath the oil filler cap! it was about 2-4 mm thick;i could scrape it with my fingernails and it felt like hardened sugar.i could see the black deposits well into the cam carrier. I found out that many other toyota owners are experiencing this sludge problem! this is obviously a design flaw in the 3.0l v6 engines causing the oil to sludge; toyota should issue a recall on these engines! *la

Told by toyota dealer that my three yr old 2002 toyota sienna with 47,542 miles needs a new engine due to sludge/gelling of engine oil.

I have 2002 toyota sienna. The car was perfect until after 30k miles. We first noticed the car occasionally had difficulty of starting during warm weather or warm engine condition. Then the situation got worst, the no starting got more often. We even got stuck in the freeway and busy street because we stopped the car and had a lot of difficulty to get the car started again. The situation could be dangerous in a traffic busy location. I have two friend who have sienna and they both had the similar problems with their sienna. The usual symptom of the problem: the car takes more cracking to start and then its rpm immediately drops to 400-200rpm and then the engine dies; some times pushing on the accelerator would help raising the rpm and got the car really started; at some other times, the engine would not start at all until the engineer cools down and/or the weather cools down; today, it happened again in an outdoor parking lot. I am still trying to get it started.

Engine was replaced because of an accumalation of sludge whichdeveloped in the base of the motor. Then, engine stalled. This was the third engine replacement.

Idle control valve failure. Prevents car from idling correctly.car will start and then cut off right after you drive off. Potentially causing you to get hit by other vehicles.this happened on my 2002 sienna at 40k mile and continuously since.i know of 4 other people with this problem.my mechanic had about 10 or these defective parts in his shop and he said that he replaces these all the time on all the toyotas.i took my car to the fremont toyota dealer and the service rep said the failure rate was so high that there was a nationwide shortage for this part and that it would take 2 months for the part to be available.the dublin ca, toyota dealer was also well aware of this problem of the idle control valve.it's a very dangerous situation for all operators of siennas, camrys, and other totota vehicles with this idle control valve.

I own a 2002toyota sienna which i purchased as a "certified used vehicle" in january 2008. I wasn't informed about the problems these particular vehicles were having with oil sludge build up. Shortly after january 2010, i checked my oil and found the oil to be gummy. I took it in for a proper oil change (though it was under the 3000 mile mark for an oil change). I checked the oil again after only driving 100 miles or so, and found the same gummy oil build up. I stopped driving it as soon as i noticed white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I didn't have the money to take it to a mechanic at the time, as i was waiting for my tax return check to arrive. As soon as i had the money to get it diagnosed, i was told that i would need a new engine, which would cost $7000! my mechanic told me of the ongoing problems my type of vehicle was having and suggested i call the customer support center of toyota. Because i was never informed by toyota (i bought my vehicle in 2008, several years after a class action lawsuit was implemented against toyota) my warranty had already expired by the time i started having problems. I feel misinformed and ripped off by both the dealership and toyota as a whole. I still owe over $9000 on my loan and do not have a vehicle to drive my five children around in safely. Toyota is risking the lives and loyalty of millions of consumers and something needs to be done to protect the citizens of this country. They refuse to pay for the repairs and have been nothing short of rude to me. I hope the government of this country will do something to help reimburse both myself, and the millions of others like me. This is a crime and needs to be stopped![xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Vehicle was blowing white smoke out, and when youremoved the oil refill cap there was a gel type substance on it, the mechanic called it oil gel.toyota knew about this and told consumer that they are not maintaining their auto, but with her vehicle this is not true.

Intermittently, the passenger side rear door, the automatic slider, does not operate properly.while closing, the door pops open unless held and dragged into latching position.depressing the button near the door, on the key chain, or on the dashboard makes no difference.resettingthe switch by unhooking the battery does not impact it.this has been ongoing since the vehicle was just a couple of years old and on warrantee.at that time a cable was adjusted and it was better for some time.the problem comes and goes without adjusting; currently service engineers find no easy resolution upon evaluation.rather, they report a need to go through the entire electrical harness at great expense.

I have a 2002 toyota sienna mini vanand mostly during cold dry months i get a shock every time i go to close the door to get out of the van. I took the van to the local toyota dealer and complained about the problem. The dealer said that he received other complaints from other van owners about people getting shocked as they were getting out of the van. He looked the van over and said everything was ok and that if i continued to get shocked to put a fabric softener sheet in the van to see if that helped , which it didn't. My concern is other than being shocked every time i exit the van if there is that much static that builds up in the van while commuting what happens when i carry a gasoline can in the van, should i suspect a firewould result? please help me resolve this issue.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota sienna. The contact stated the vehicle leaked water from the air conditioning system and the srs air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000. ...updated 09/12/16 the consumer stated the vehicle was repaired under an extended warranty.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota sienna.at 34,006 miles, the brakes began to make squeaking noises and the brake warning light illuminated.the failure occurred while driving 45 mph.at 36,000, 46,000, and 49,000 miles, the dealer replaced the front and rear brakes, the rear and front rotors, and also resurfaced the front and rear drums.the repairs were performed under warranty.nevertheless, the brakes continued to squeak and the brake pedal must be depressed very hard in order for the vehicle to stop.the dealer stated that the noise was due to the brake buster and it needed to be replaced at the cost of $1,000 since the vehicle was out of warranty.the manufacturer stated that they could not be of assistance since the warranty expired.they provided the contact with reference number 2007-0220392.the current mileage was 78,000 and failure mileage was 34,006.the dealer stated arm rests, replaced brake light bulb, squeak in the inside cabin.updated 11/26/07

Toyota sienna sludge & fuel system failure.

I bought my 2002 toyota sienna, 05/04/2004, 7011 miles after my check engine light was on. Dealer fixed it by replacing emission control charcoal canister. In june 2005 & after approximately 1500 miles later, gas refueling valvestarted shutting off, even though gas was not full. Dealer checked & said i need a new emission control charcoal canister, because my previous canister was out of warranty, i have to pay $495 (part+ labor) to replace it. I complained of this problem repeating soon, dealer could not give satisfactory answer. In consumers website i have found out that there are lots of complaints about 2002 toyota vehicles. Is it possible this part in this year failed more often than normal?

I bough a 2002 toyota sienna new in 2001. The warranty ran out two months ago and now i have a problem. The problem is the car does not accept gas at the gas station. I brought it to the dealer (penn toyota - 516-621-6800 ) for its annual inspection. I called to make the appointment and mentioned the problem, already, before seeing the vehicle they said it was the charcoal canister that is clogged. They replaced it at a cost of almost 500 dollars. I paid, left and went straight to a gas station. The car still does not accept gas. I returned the car. Now it needs two more parts that require four hours of labor at 85 dollars an hour and 200 dollars worth of parts. I mentioned that the problem has not gone away and that they replaced the carbon canister for no reason. They said yes it needed to be changed that they see this problem four to five times a week. Now what???????

Purchased 2002 toyota sienna new. Purchased hess gas in florida, (ethan within 24 hours check engine light came on.had checked and reset and eventually came back on gain.rec'd some estimates an was told it was either oxygen sensor or catalytic conv.catalytic below threshold hold need to be replaced.replaced and 3 months out of warranty engine light on again.check diagnostic and again same code. Had it reset, did no repairs within 9 months light on again.told it is definitely the catalytic conv. (longest) one; same one recently replaced.can't understand why this happening again.is there a problem with the obd or is it really the caty. Or oxygen sensor..dealership would not even offer any type of discount, they quoted me the same price and i asked, "how could it be the same part?" "could it be done at half cost?was told it was about 1500 parts and labor again.

On august 15, 2010 with the 2002 toyota siennain park and with no key in the steering wheel a two year old was able to remove the gear shift from park allowing the vehicle to begin to move backwards.several people were close by and were able to stop the vehicle which was backing up.adults then checked the vehicle and in fact were able to move the shifter from park into gear (without the key in its ignition).on august 16 the vehicle was taken to the dealer who confirmed -"customer states the shifter comes out of park without the key in the ignition.confirmed customer concern. Found shifter cable worn and in need of adjustment."

1. Trunk door latch broken2. Passenger side sliding door could not close. Need to change to manual mode.

Drivers side sliding door (power) will no longer work except manually.an annunciator on the dash indicate "pwr door" in red.

Automatic door locks suddenly and without cause lock and unlock. Sometimes it's while we're driving, sometimes while parked. Sometimes it's front doors only, sometimes back only, sometimes all of them. It seems to happen when it's wet (so far, snowing), though not always. One can be locked inside the vehicle or leave it locked and return to find it unlocked. Dealers along colorado front range haven't heard of this problem. An internet site suggested a shielded security system harness has fixed the problem for some others. Vehicle is nearly 6 years old with 80k miles. It's never happened before 2/14/08, and it's happened 6-8 times since - though very intermittently.

When the sudden acceleration problem erupted i remember seeing an internal document which related to the rear door latch for siennas.i own a sienna and have had to replace the rear latch twice so far.it just brakes apart and it becomes a real huzzle since the rear door cannot be opened.toyota must replace this latches with a good well manufactured material.

Driver's and passenger's side automatic sliding doors have been intermittently malfunctioning even after warranty repairs in the past.sometime, the sliding doors fail to close and stay open, only to be closed manually.

Bought acertified used 2002 toyota sienna xle from a toyota dealership in july 2007. While inspecting it, the driver's side sliding door was acting up. They tried to fix it a couple of times then verbally asked me to bring it back when they had the right parts. 2 weeks later, i brought it in at their request and they 'fixed' it. After i left the shop i noticed it was acting up. I was made to pay for the repairs by the toyota dealership.this door is acting up right now.

1. Trunk door latch broken and cannot open. Toyota does not provide a manual trunk release inside the van. 2. Passenger side automatic sliding door would not stay closed. It just kept popping open.

Outside door latch on manual sliding door broke.inside latch still works.power sliding door refuses to open.prior to failure, it would try to close several times before actually latching shut.no response from local dealer.

Tl- the contact owns 2002 toyota sienna. The contact stated the rear lift gate on the vehicle will not open because the latch is broken. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told there is a plastic link to the latch that had broken and prevents the rear lift gate from opening from the inside and outside. The failure was 175,000 and the current mileage was 183,000.rl

I have a sienna xle 2002 with the electronic sliding doors.from the inside of the van, there are three buttons to open the doors; one on the console, one on the columns between front and back seats and one button in the handle.periodically the sliding doors will not shut or they will not open.the last time this happened was july 16, 2008 when the kids in the back driver's side tried to open the sliding door and could not.we tried everything and it was jammed shut.it seems like the button in the handle was stuck (which has happened before).this is a very dangerous situation if there was an accident or roll over and my passengers could not get out.i believe this is a defect as i have read many complaints about this problem.my sienna is still under warranty (7 years), but toyota will not warranty this lock release button problem because they say it is part of the handle and the handle is not under warranty.i countered that the handle is fine, it is just the button designed in the handle that is broken.if the button was situated elsewhere in the door, i am sure it would be covered.toyota will not take responsibility for this serious problem that they blatantly know about.

Within a year after buying the 2002 toyota sienna the right side sliding door could not be opened from inside.the left side door has the same problem intermittantly.neither one has been repaired but are seen as a safety concern in the worst case and a constant nuisance otherwise.the issue was not covered under warranty and so remain.the rear door plastic latch broke after about four years, requiring a $200 repair.it broke again after about three more years but this time i repaired it with a metal screw, but a year later it broke in another place and cannot be repaired.the part is made of slightly soft brittle plastic, poorly designed.interestingly, i recently bought a new toyota prius and purchased an extended warranty.reading the fine print i find in the rather long list of exclusions from the "bumper to bumper" warranty are included door latches as well as, ironically, the bumpers.

2002 toyota sienna passenger door behind driver not opening. Automatic door doesn't close. Have been to the shop for these problems. Problems persist.

Power door failing to open and close properly.this has been an issue since we purchased the van in 2004.the doors would some times not open under power or would not close under power.we had to manually close/open the door.the passenger side door now will not close under power.when the problem was intermittent, we took the van to the dealer and they said there was no problem.doing some research on the internet the repair runs in the $1500-$1800 range.

Our 2002 toyota sienna automatic lock system started spontaneously locking and unlocking itself.it will do this while it is parked or while driving on the highway.it may do it once or twice, or repeatedly lock and unlock 15 times or more, even during a short commute.it occurs randomly, sometimes multiple times a day, and sometimes not for several days.rarely will the van stay locked when parked.it is very distracting and a big safety issue.i have tried to have it repaired twice, at 2 different toyota dealerships.i was told they could not find the source of the problem, as it did not lock and unlock while it was in their care.of course, it recurred before i returned home.

We had some transmission work done on our 2002 toyota sienna.after that work was completed the door locks on the van automatically and repeatedly lock with out intervention .this happens when the car is parked, turned off and while driving.we have taken it to the dealership twice while it was happening and they can't figure out how to fix it.the dealership said this issue wasn't related to the transmission work.

My husband and i purchased a certified used 2002 toyota sienna in 2005.since purchasing the vehicle we have had problems with opening and closing the sliding doors and issue with the trunk.it first started when the trunk would not open any more.the little piece to click it open broke off.next, the right passenger sliding door would not open from the inside, but could be opened from the outside.eventually, the outside handle broke off (probably due the inability to open it from the inside).next the left passenger sliding door started to show similarities to the right sliding passenger door.eventually, this handle broke off as well and would not open from the inside.to date, the sliding door on the left or the right can not be opened inside or out.this is a safety issue for us and our four kids.the kids have to come through the front to get out of the van.it became somewhat strange to me when i noticed that other toyota sienna minivans had handles missing off the back passenger sliding doors. I thought, what is up with the quality of the vans?most individuals driving minivans are transporting children, so i would assume that the vans were constructed to handle the constant opening and closing that occurs from the back passengers.i think this problem should be addressed in a fair way.when we went to inquire about the trunk we were told that it would cost over $200, so we took the optional route of loading groceries, luggage, etc. From the inside.the door incidents have happened this year, 2010.we have owned other vehicles with the kids, namely 1997 honda odyssey that did not have any of the handles missing or any problems with getting in and out of the vehicle.i sent a letter to toyota corporate office on august 22, 2010 via email, no response.i phone toyota corporate office on august 30, 2010 and was informed that the car was not under warranty (i already knew this) and that there was nothing they could do at this time.

The button on the sliding doors sticks when i try to open it from the inside, and it causes the door to be either unopenable or uncloseable, depending on what position it was in when the button got stuck.i had it repaired once , but it stuck again.the dealer is claiming they can't fix it because it did not happen when they had the car there at the dealership.this is a very serious safety concern - we had to crawl out the back because we could not open the door!it took a long time to try to get the button out by giggling the door and prying the button back out.this has happened numerous times.i hate to think what would happen if there was a fire or other emergency!i also have a problem with the driver side front door lock mechanism.it will not always unlock the other doors, as it is supposed to. I also have a problem with the doors locking themselves - it has happened at least 4 times that the doors automatically lock, by themselves, with no one touching the locks or keyless entry system.i am very concerned my babies will be locked in and i won't be able to open the doors (especially if the keys happen to be in the car when it automatically locks by itself). The dealer will not fix it because they claim it is not happening to them or it is supposed to do that - it is not. *la

The left sliding door stopped halfway when closing and moved back to fully open position. Repeated tries did not work and so had to manually close the door. After that the pwr door icon on the display lit up showing a problem with the power door. Taking to the mechanic revealed that the motor is defective. The vehicle has only 31,500 miles.

Both sliding passenger doors and rear hatch door will break and not open.we have had at least 8 incidents of doors not opening, and latches breaking not allowing access to vehicle.on one occasion, door was jammed in the open position and not able to close completely.toyota advised door cable in door was too long and dealer took care of it and there should be no more problems.problem recurred on 3/6/08.

Rear sliding door latches failed intermittently. As a result, occupants were unable to exit the vehicle.dealer stated there was a design flaw, and the manufacturer has repaired the problem in the newer model vehicles.*tc

The door latches got stuck intermittently.door is not closed while car moving.

Right side sliding door locked and could not be opened from inside or outside. Approximately. 4 weeks later driver side sliding also locked with adult passenger in 2nd seat and vehicle had to be driven to toyota dealership where mechanic took approximately. 6 minutes to get door open.owner was advised that both door locks will have to be replaced under warranty and they scheduled an appointment to replace them. When first door locked dealership told owner to make an appointment and would not inspect vehicle.*la

The power sliding door intermittently does not open properly using the power switch or remote control when i try to open it manually, the door returns to the closed position while being opened and my arm is in danger of being crushed.

1) hot summer temperatures seemed to be connected with the failure of the locking mechanism on the passenger side sliding door of the toyota 2002 sienna minivan. 2)when the locking mechanism gets stuck, the inside button also is stuck inwards, the door is not able to be closed as a result. The latching mechanism will not engage with the strike bar.3)to correct the problem we had to wiggle and toggle around with the combination of outside door handle, inside button, and childlock located in the door jam until by luck, it released. It took an hour.to date, an "inspection" by the dealer is scheduled.

My wife was backing out of a parking space on a slight incline.when she stopped and tried to put the car into drive, the gearshift broke.we had the van towed to the toyota dealer and they determined that the metal parts into which the gear shaft inserts had broken clean in half.neither the customer service rep nor the mechanic had ever seen that happen before they claimed.nevertheless, toyota did not deem this to be a defect and we had to pay close to $800 to have it fixed.had this happened on a steeper hill or had my wife been pulling out into a busy street, an accident most definitely could have occurred.i have kept the parts which i believe were faulty/defective.the parts that were replaced were a tilt steering support, a steering tube sub-assembly, a shaft sub-assembly and a tilt steering bolt.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota sienna. While the vehicle was parked with the engine turned off and the emergency brake engaged, the vehicle suddenly rolled backwards down a small incline and crashed into a fence post. A small child was present inside the vehicle, but there were no injuries. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to maita toyota (2500 auburn blvd, sacramento, ca). The dealer indicated that the transmission experienced a mechanism failure, but the exact cause was not determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 136,200.

The automatic door on our 2002 toyota sienna does not work.the cable broke while my daughter was getting in the car.luckily, she was not injured.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota sienna. The contact stated that the gear shift failed to shift out of park and drive. The failure recurred sporadically. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where it was stated that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

Our 2002 toyota sienna had the gear shift repaired at a major atlanta area toyota dealer on may 5, 2014. The gear shift replacement required the entire steering column to be disassembled. About one week after that repair, the steering completely failed. The steering wheel turned with absolutely no control of the wheels. By sheer luck this steering failure occurred in a parking lot after just traveling on the interstate. Had this steering failure occurred at interstate speeds, this may have been fatal. The vehicle was returned to the same major atlanta area toyota dealer and the cause of the steering failure was identified as "steering joint bolt backed off from connection". I was told that the steering failure was caused by one bolt coming loose. The steering failure was corrected by "re-tightened' bolt with lock tight".in summary, the repair of a gear shift by a certified toyota dealer service center resulted in complete steering failure due to one bolt that "backed off from connection" or that was not properly tightened or secured.it is very concerning that toyota?s steering column design has the potential to cause complete steering failure when one bolt comes loose. It is also a major issue that a certified toyota dealer service center is unable to safely dissemble and reassemble the steering column and provide a safe and drivable vehicle. I would like to find out how often this type of steering failure has occurred on this and similarly designed toyota vehicles. I would also like to know how many crashes, serious injuries or deaths have resulted from this issue. This certainly can?t be the only occurrence. I feel it is imperative to alert owners of this vehicle as well as authorized repair centers of the situation or issue a recall to ensure that the steering joint bolt is secure. I hope you will be able to help me out. My sienna has 61022 mileages on it and we baby this car to the 't'.on february 11, 2008, i had just started the vehicle and was about to change from 'p' to 'd' when the gear shift lever broke. No force was used and we always pull back the shifter and change gears with minimal force.i had the vehicle towed to the dealer and the technician showed me where the aluminum brackets broke in three places. I was in shock that the design and material was not made engineered to last. The technician said that the material is made of aluminum and he just replaced one a couple of days ago.i did some research on the internet and found out this is not a single case. There are a lot of people who had this same problem on their sienna worldwide? normally, the part should last the life of the vehicle. I start to wonder if this is a defect because it is happening on lots of siennas. Also this repair is extremely expensive. It cost me $834.69.00 us dollar. (parts $166.16, labor $655.65)please let me know if this is common and if toyota should have take a full responsibility in this kind of matter and consider this as a defect. Thank you for your attention in this issue.

A 3 year oldmoved thegear shift lever on the steering column. The childeasilymoved from drive to neutral without depressing the brake pedal and the gear shiftbutton.as a result, the vehicle rolled forward.dealer notified. *la

I had bought my van may 2,2003 with about 19,000 miles.on october 7, while driving about 30 mph, the vehicle started smoking.when i pulled into a parking stall, passerbyers were yelling that my car was on fire.fire department extinguished the flames.an independent arson investigator said he found transmission fluid in the engine, and that it had probably been leaking since i purchased my van.*la

While stopped in "drive" with foot on the brakes, the vehicle occationally attempts to surge forward.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota sienna. The contact statedwhile driving in reverse at unknown speeds, the shifter lever broke. The contact applied the emergency brake to completely stop the vehicle. The contact was only able to drive to his residence while in reverse. The contact then removed the steering column in order to move the shifter to neutral. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The contact was concerned with the possibility of the failure occurring at highway speeds. The failure mileage was 78,000.

Observed slipping during full stops, engine died several occasions before the actual total failure of parts involved, loss of forward motion or speed pick-up, transmission fluid leaked(toyota issued an automatic transaxle warranty enhancement notice involving 1998-2000 siennas but apparently the company already have knowledge of this problem to occur).

2002 toyota sienna 3rd row seat has faulty seat belt. Seat belt will not retract on left side of last seat.only used sparingly, stuck will not retract.

Seat belt failure on 5 of 7 seats in 2002 toyota sienna van - multiple times and continiousand on-going problem - only 3 work as of now (3-21-07). Dealer will not repair or concerned with.

Dt*: the contact stated the front driver's seatbelt released from the buckle assembly without warning.afterwards, the buckle assembly was difficult to lock.the vehicle has not been seen by a dealer.

Middle to rear seat w/failure; the seat belts lock-up upon movement where the shoulder portion gets tighter with the slightest movement.in order to maintain usage of the shoulder belt, the occupant(s) must remove the seat belt and refasten.please describe details. Ts

While at a complete stop, my vehicle was struck at the seven o'clock position. During the accident, the seat belt retractors allowed the belt webbing to extend beyond 25 mm without restraining the occupants. All seat belted occupants struck the vehicle interior directly in front of their prospective position. The force of acceleration and subsequent secondary impact was sufficient to cause moderate facial lacerations. Elr performance is believed to be non-compliant with cfr title 49 part 571.208 - 571.209 of the federal motor vehicle safety standards and regulations.

Rear sear belt buckle refuses to latch. A child car seat cannot be installed in this seat.

I bought a used siennamini van fromtoyota inmd with55.000 miles on itwithall the warranties.when we went to use the rear seat belt on driver's side we noticed it would not retract. We took it to dealer ,and after having it for a few days they called me and told me that the rear seat beltwas not under warranty, and it would be $ 500.00 to replace. Thenthethe mamager for the parts department caled me,and said that they will cover half the bill.i declined since we never usedthatseat belt .then he told me that he would talk to the used car department about covering some of the cost he has not retorned my calls and ehen i go into the dealership they told me hewas out sick.were execting our 4 th child and we needed a working seat belt so we had the option of using the rear seat belt since we still were making payments on this mini van.we also had a mid seat that seemedto be loose, and the part number they gave me was wrong .can youhelp me withthis sincerly , a am aconcerned mother.

We have a 2002 toyota sienna that we bought new from grossinger toyota on 12/24/01.has a 3 year, 36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.we went to remove the 2 rear seats to create more room to carry items.the rear driver's side came out with no problem.the rear pasenger side would not disengage.we brought it into grossinger toyota today. Three technicians and a manager later, they told us we broke it.we told them that when we couldn't remove it, we brought it in to them so we wouldn't create any problems.it was then that the manager said they would contact toyota tomorrow to see if it would be replaced under warranty. We couldn't understand how it wouldn't be covered under warranty, as this is toyota's problem. This is also when he told us they have had other complaints about the exact same problem. Dealer is grossinger toyota,6747 n. Lincoln ave. Lincolnwood, il60645847.675.7100. Manager is named steve. We are now waiting to hear back from grossinger to see what will happen.we are extremely unhappy with grossinger all together, as whenever we bring in an item under warranty, they say there is nothing wrong, yet they find a list of items to be serviced, all which require a charge.

I was pulling forward from a red light, slowly accelerating. Someone cut me off, i swerved, and then accelerated into traffic. The car started accelerating on its own, from about 35 mph (where i pulled my foot off the accelerator pad to "hold" the speed but not continue accelerating) up to 55 mph--this happened very quickly, in a smattering of seconds. I remembered reading that you should just slam on the brake and hold it down hard, which i did. This did stop further acceleration, but it did not immediately slow the car. I was able to slow the car in about 10 seconds, though deceleration was very slow. When i finally returned to 35 mph, i did not attempt to accelerate again for about two miles. I stopped at another traffic light, and when i started forward from the light, i did not depress the accelerator pad with my typical force, accelerating at about half the speed i normally would, as i did not want to be taken by surprise by the unexpected sudden acceleration again. The problem did not further repeat itself this evening, but it was quite scary when it happened. I know it was not the floor mat under the pedal, as the floor mat has been cut away from the pedal area and was pulled very far back into the driver's seat area.

Brakes make a noise when the car is about to stop.there is a squeal and thump that can be heard.have taken this in several times to be fixed.they say the brakes are safe.i am 74 years old and have had many cars over the years and the only times other cars have made this kind of noise it was time to change the brakes.in this case the brake pads seem to have plenty of life left.funny that when the rear drums are removed and the brake and drums are thoroughly cleaned the noise does not happen for a while. The first complaint was made at 15,523 miles and continues too this day.at 31,842 miles the rear drums were replaced per tsb br003-04. Took the car in again at 125,559 miles and we were told we needed new rear drums.they had been replaced.they have a problem with brakes and need to fix the problem.

When driving on cruise control and lightly braking the car suddenly alarmingly accelerates. Dealer claims various issues that they tried but non resolved the problem.i am ready to sell and afraid that the buyer might not remember to follow my instruction to turn off the cruise control before braking. I have brought the car to the dealer several times over the years, most recently this year 2014.

The rear brakes have been squeaking within the first year with less than 10,000 miles.the local dealer inspected and tried to correct the problem three times with no improvement.on 03/12/2003, the dealer worked on the squeaking brakes the third time and reported that dealer will called technical assistance line and will follow up on this issue, customer will be advised.however, the squeaking brakes only get worse and never hear from neither dealer nor toyota.i called toyota directly and they told me it was the federal government change in the way manufactures make brakes shoes.i can not believe that toyota blame this continue excessively squeaking brakes problem to federal government.please file your complaint if you have the same problem.*la

I drive a 2002 toyota sienna xle and have experienced a lurching/accelerating when i am at a full stop. When it happens (which is becoming more frequent) it seems awkward.now, i wonder is this part of the accelerator problem too? *cw

We have owned this 2002 toyota sienna since 2002.the brakes have always squealed when stopping gradually, and the dealer said that sienna brakes all squeal.there have been only a few instances over the previous 9 years when the abs has activated and i had always felt that the abs on this was much superior to the mazda protege that we owned.however in the past month or two, the abs activated about 3 or 4 times, on slightly rapid stops, under dry driving conditions.yesterday evening, under dry driving conditions, when pulling out of a stop light, i noticed the suv ahead slowing down and began braking, then switched to the accelerator for a fraction of a second when it seemed that they might start accelerating, then when they brake hard, i too slammed on my brakes.the abs kicked in, but the car seemed to keep moving and the crash happened in slow motion - it was just as i felt in the mazda protege, when the abs kicked in while trying to stop on an icy road - the car kept moving without seeming to slow down.i am not sure, but also have a vague sense that the engine continued to work hard to pull the car forward, possibly like the unintended acceleration reported by others in a recent spate of accidents.i was standing on the brake when my car plowed under the rear fender of the chevy tahoe ahead, causing the radiator, battery, etc. To get smashed.this was when it was clear that the engine was still racing and trying to pull the car forward - i finally cut the ignition to kill the engine.my insurance company called edy's toyota, with me on the line, to see if they could read the car computer to check the cause of the accident.the service rep showed a lot of reluctance, seeming to indicate that not much would be gained, and finally declined saying "you're putting me in a spot"...

Is toyota 2002 sienna safe to drive?as of februray 2010, we still observe slippage during stops at slow speeds.the brakes pulsate when applied slowly.this is a problem that comes and goes.in december 2007, we reported the following problems to the dealer 1)abs and low tire pressure warning lights turn on and off2) crunching sound heard when braking with delayed braking action, particularly in cold, rainy weather.the dealer found no signal at right rear speed sensor, and recommended replacing abs actuator (which we did) -- total cost approx. $2,000.00, but insisted that this was a "fluke."van had 66,481 miles at the time.problem with braking still occurs, though no warning lights appear.we are concerned that toyota is selectively recalling newer models and ignoring the fact that there have been reported braking and acceleration problems with older vehicles as well.

My son was driving the van when an individual cut in front of him promptingmy son to put on his brakes to avoid contact which he did (thank god). So he continue to his destination ( our house ) but he started to hearthe car was making some strange noise coming from the front endand also when pressing the brake the car started to pull to the right .he got home and told me about the situation and it was when i took car to local mechanic .at that time we discover where the noise was coming from. The rotor broke and it was just hanging there . The mechanic told us that he never seen something like it and to be thankful that no one got hurt. This is a big safety concern and need someone immediate attention .

Since we purchased the car we have had problems with the brakes squeeking.we have had the brakes replaced multiple times and have even upgraded the brakes to an improved quality brake pads by the dealer.however the brakes have gotten worse as the car has gotten older.the brake pedal is very spongy and tends to go down to the floor when stopping.when stopping in emergency situations the brakes make a horrible crunching noise.since december 2010 i have had 3 instances where i needed to stop quickly.each time the brakes made the crunching noise and the braking distance was longer than would be expected.

The rear brakes squeaked excessively when braking.the dealer advised that the problem was caused by the federal government's change in the way manufacturers make brake shoes and were unable to remedy the problem.the consumer is very concerned about the effectiveness of the brakes.*nlm

2002 toyota sienna xle-original owner. Brakes have squeaked since around 5000 miles. Dealer says 'sienna's brakes just squeak" and shrugged their shoulders. Didn't even inspect brakes. Had brake pads replaced with top of the line pads in aug 05. Left the parking lot and they continued to squeak. Every time the brakes are applied. Passenger in the rear stated it was very loud in the rear, however, i hear it very pronounced as the driver. Called toyota another time and they said this is not a safety issue, so there is no recall, etc. On 3 occasions, when brakes pressed suddenly, the brake pedal jumps and wouldn't allow me to press brakes further. Scary. Brakes don't just squeak. I wish i would've discovered this website before my warranty was up. Now, with 58000 miles on my van, i feel they wouldn't do anything. I brought my concerns 3 times with in 5k-25k miles, and was ignored. I wish i would've pursued this earlier. I would've traded this vehicle in a heartbeat, however, i don't have a payment, so that is why i've chosen to live with the squeaking. It is very very very stressful. And very very annoying. (this complaint is for a sienna, not a sequoia--the complaint only had the sequoia as an option while i was entering data/complaint info)(??)

I have taken my 2002 sienna to the dealership (last winter) because the brakes have failed in very cold weather. The failure has happened three times, most recently this past sunday morning.the first two times the vehicle had been parked outside in below zero temps for a few hours.i backed out of the driveway (no problem braking in reverse)...all was well.however as i drove toward the stop sign it was as though the power was all gone from the braking system. I pushed them to the floor and held them there and eventually it stopped before i was too far out into the intersection. It has happened twice, under exactly the same conditions over the last two winters.the dealership could find nothing wrong.this past sunday morning i had my two youngest children in the car and we were headed to church.as i began to brake for the stop sign ahead, again the same thing happened.i had to hold them to the floor and barely escaped entering the intersection.it frightened all of us.this time the car had been inside the garage.the first two times this happened i did research on the internet to see if anyone else was having this problem and found nothing.after this sunday morning i looked again and now see that different and newer toyota models have been found to have problems braking in cold weather.i can't help but wonder if i may be dealing with the same issue.i'm really hoping you can help me with this.i am afraid to drive this van, not just for our own safety but that of others.i don't trust it.i would appreciate a reply as soon as possible.

Dt*:the contact stated while the brake pedal was depressed, the front brakes squeal.the brakes have been properly maintained and the rotors have been replaced, but the noise still occurs.the manufacturer sent a technician, which determined this was normal operating conditions.the contact felt that since the noise came whenever the brakes were applied it was a safety issue. Updated 05/16/2006.

Began having indicator lights on dashboard of my vehicle (toyota sienna 2002) come on for no apparent reason; specifically, the csv and brake lights concurrently.it seemed to occur more when temperature was cold outside.initially thought it was a faulty sensor, but when the intermittent nature of fault became more frequent, was concerned could be a serious brake problem.i took to dealer; diagnosis was a 'faulty sensor' on the wheel's "sensor/hub assembly".apparently, it is impossible to replace the faulty sensor without replacing the complete assembly at a cost of over $600 for the part, not including labor, at $115/hr.(it also took them an hr just to diagnose, so add another $115).they disabled sensor while part on order, which meant that my anti-lock breaks - a key safety feature of the vehicle-- will not work until part is replaced.while my car is over 4 yrs old, it only has 31,042 miles on it.i find it unbelievable that a part of this significance to safety has failed at such a minimal amount of miles.moreover, it was reported to me by dealer's service tech, that they "hardly ever have failures of this part".it may be a statistical anomaly...or not...perhaps they have discouraged folks from reporting this very costly failure of a key safety related part.

The brakes failed, which caused consumer to lose control of the vehicle, which resulted in an accident.

While driving 10 mph, the abs malfunctioned.even whendriving on dry pavement the braking distance increased.the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, but the dealer was not able to duplicate the problem.the vehicle failed twice at intersections, twice attempting to come to a stop to park and once when going down a hill.(always under 10 mph) *sc

Brakes squealing at low speeds.i have repeatedly taken the vehicle in for this issue to be told it is not a safety issue - ergo, they cannot fix it.

Brake squeal on 2002 toyota sienna. Dealer said this is normal.

I own a 2002 toyota sienna and there is a problem with the rear brake rotor drum and pad.frequest squealing and premature pad wear is evident since 5,000 miles. The dealer told us toyota recognizes the problem and will investigate a solution.they originally stated they expected a reply by toyota by july/august 2002.we still do not have any information that leads us to believe this issue will be resoplved anytime soon.

The rear brakes have been squeaking.i have had them checked by the dealer 3 times and each time i was told they were fine.now they have continued to squeak and now need to be replaced.i am concerned about the safety of the manufacured brake pads.

Dt:contact states the brakes are squeaking on her vehicle.there were no warning lights indicating a problem.when she applied the brakes during the winter months the pedal pulsated.if she applied the brakes rapidly, there was a problem stopping the vehicle.the dealer said they could not find anything wrong with the brakes.the brake pads have been replaced, but this did not correct the problem.

2002 toyota sienna with 47,542 miles brakes squeak when stopping.toyota says there is a tsb but that i have exceeded the mileage under which they will fix the issue.seems that if the brakes have an issue toyota should fix the problem regardless.another example of toyota not supporting faulty products, in my opinion.very frustrated with service received from toyota after dealing with this and oil sludging issues and their lack of concern for customers.i strongly recommend that anyone looking for a vehicle look else where, in my opinion.you do not get what you think you are getting when you purchase a toyota, in my opinion.i thought toyota meant reliable, long lasting etc.not so in my experience of dealing with this vehicle.this is my first and last toyota.buyers beware!and goodluck if you choose to ignore this warning.

My 2002 toyota sienna brakes squeak.the service technicians have checked them several times and can't find the problem.toyota knows about the problem and is said to be working on it (something with the rear brake drums).they claim that the brakes are safe and work properly.how can this be with such a noise going on?i don't wish to find out that they were indeed not safe after they fail.*la

Steering gets stiff hard to turn steering

The contact was driving approximately 5 mph when the steering wheel became abnormally hard to maneuver. The contact stated that he was able to finally move the steering wheel but the vehicle would not respond. The vehicle was towed to the to the contacts place or residence. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 57,000.

The steering went out without any warning. 45 minutes prior to this, i was on the interstate going 70 miles an hour, thankfully i was backing out of a parking space at the time, so no personal injury or damage of any kind.i could have very easily have been killed do to defective workmanship. I promptly called greenville toyota and reported it and they were to come tow the car from raleigh back to greenville. Greenville toyota says the steering column is not under warranty and it would cost me $328 to replace it.it never should have come loose.here is part of the letter i've sent to greenville toyota: ------------------------------------------------------------i cranked my 2002 toyota sienna and put it in reverse and started to turn the wheel to back up. All of a sudden the steering wheel popped and the wheel started to spin freely. My brother took a look at the sienna. He checked the front wheels and it was not the tie rods. He then checked the steering column. The wheel spun freely because the universal joint had come loose. The bolt that goes from the u joint into the steering column never was installed properly. The unit should have never, ever come apart like that. My brother attached the bolt properly and had me on my way in a couple of hours. In his mechanic's opinion the unit was never attached properly and was an accident waiting to happen.

Problems:1: the starting idle will not keep car on if temperature is below 60 and i had to pay $200, just to have toyota clean it, but they would not replace it. Even after it been cleaned the problem still happens randomly.2: tire pressure gauge sensor has always been on even after its been reset two different times.3: randomly the front wheels will vibrate then stop after about 15 miles. I've replaced with new tires and had brakes done twice but problems still persists.

The consumer stated that the power steering rack was defective.

I have 2002 sienna. I have power rear door problem.: the door will open properly using any of the "door open" buttons but will not close--all i hear is a clicking sound when any of the buttons are pushed again. I'm assuming that the relay to "close" is working but the motor is for whatever reason not receiving the input.

Passenger side power sliding door on toyota sienna le (2002) is bad. Went to the dealer and they slapped me with a 1400 estimate. Left to deal with safety issues for my children with mechanical malfunctions and if power door button is accidentally engaged. I feel l am left with no option. This repair is much to expensive and does not fall under any warranties. How can buyer beware of such traps. I am only mid way through payments and i already have a major repair cost that hardly makes the initial purchase worth it. The dealer offered no alternative than to push the power button off. This is not an acceptable option with children at risk!

Driver's side sliding door (not a power door) will not open from the inside or outside. The mechanism has failed.i have had several problems with both sliding doors (passenger side is power door) with the latch mechanism getting stuck. This time, it is completely inoperable.

The carrier, cable, mount and bolts have severely rusted causing the mechanism to bind and lock-up.the entire mechanism has no corrosion resistance and is exposed to the environment and thus is susceptible to corrosion and severe rusting.spare tire carrier jammed when changing a flat tire with spare making reinstalling difficult.lowering of spare tire will jam preventing replacement of a flat tire.

2002 toyota sienna xle recurrent power sliding door cables snapping and motor failing. This is the second time since i bought it in 2008.

Sliding door on 2002 sienna van has been a problem several times.first time was within 40,000 miles as the tension on the cable had to be adjusted.kept sticking closed and could not open the door.the door locks have stuck locked and could not unlock them, door had to be taken apart.has been fixed by toyota dealer once for $200 plus dollars, now the cable came off its track.the door no longer works, keeps getting stuck, and now the cable sticks out when you open the door.

Toyota sienna driver side window vertical scratchesi have pass multiple sienna's on the highway that have the same scratches.

The sliding passenger door on my minivan does not open from the outside.this started when the van was less than one year old and under warranty.toyota lubed and adjusted it and said it was ok.over the next 7 years it would work for a while and then start again.toyota continued to lube and adjust and at one point said their engineers had realized that the spring wasn't strong enough so they put a heavier spring in it.it is still not working.now toyota says it won't do anything else because the warranty is long gone.i told them they lubed and adjusted me out of my warranty and they never fixed it.so now i have a door that cannot be opened from the outside.

When i attempted to open driver side sliding door it would not open electrically or manually. After several failed attempts to open i cut the cable and was able to then open the door. At this point in time both sliding doors will not open electronically but will open manually.

I have a 2002 toyota sienna van. Last year the driver's side rubber holding and sealing the windshield came out. Allowing water into the car under and around the steering column. Toyota charged me for the repair and said it was a fluke. Yesterday, the passenger side failed again allowing wind and water into the car. I have since learned of another sienna owner that had the same problem.

While driving 45mphsunvisormoved to side window, sunvisor dangles overconsumer'shead.

About 3 years ago, the driver's side sliding door stopped functioning properly.it would not open the majority of time.now, it doesn't open at all.when the handle is pulled from either the inside or outside, the door appears to lock and will not open.toyota wanted about $100 to attempt to diagnose the problem.about a month ago, the cable on the power sliding passenger side door snapped.the door still works manually, thankfully.toyota wants over $1,000 dollars to fix this.i read in forums that this is a wide spread problem, yet toyota refuses to acknowledge a defect.now it has happened to me.

Corrosion on the spare tire carrier and cable. Causes: 1) binding of cable preventing lowering of spare tire 2) slipping of carrier and cable; possibly causing sudden drop; 3) weakening of carrier and cable, and 4) sticking of carrier and cable causing jamming preventing spare tire from being lowered or lowered in a jerking and unsafe manner.2002 toyota sienna fwd, with spare tire carrier.

Back seat passenger doors will not manually open from the inside cabin.must be opened from the outside only.

Power sliding door doesn't close.

Door handles break off during normal use due to electrical door malfunction. The design of these door handles are poor and a new design needs to be made.

We are currently having problems with the locking system of our 2002 toyota sienna xle (currently 47,710 miles); specifically the passenger side door and the right sliding door. The passenger side door malfunctioned sometime back in early march 2009, whereby the doors will not function via remote or electronic means. The passenger side door is only functional by manually locking or unlocking the door. Also, about a month later, the sliding door started acting up. In fact, we had an incident where one of our passenger's finger was trapped by the right side sliding door. The sliding door closed as the passenger was getting in her seat. My wife had to force the door open from the outside to free the passenger's fingers. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries. As for the right sliding door, it failed to function completely on august 10, 2009. Currently, the sliding door will not unlock at all (electronically or manually). I fear that these malfunction problems pose a significant risk to me and my family. I have a four year old child and his safety is of paramount importance to me. We cannot get the car repaired due to the enormous costs it would take just to correct the defect. In fact, back in march 18, 2009 when only the passenger side door was failing to work, i inquired how much it would cost to repair the door and the representative stated it would cost $100 just to look at the door.

The cable for the passenger power door snapped and door would not fully shut.i was stopped, getting ready to turn left, when it snapped.

When using my remote door opener, my automatic sliding doors do not fully open.*cw

1. Trunk door latch broken and cannot open. Toyota does not provide a manual trunk release inside the van. 2. Passenger side automatic sliding door would not stay closed. It just kept popping open.

Power doors can not be stopped by a child.requires considerable force to reverse direction.dealer told me they will inform toyota.no further info.there was no crash. **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**760751***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis***760751

The door latches got stuck intermittently.door is not closed while car moving.

The power sliding door on my toyota sienna stopped working.it is very difficult to open when the power unit does not work.this seems to be a very common problem.repair shops generally chage over $1000 to fix it (we were quoted $1200) and it makes one side of the vehicle practically inescapable.

A rattling noise was heard in the sliding door.the car vibrated when driven at any speed and the ignition switch was defective.the owner was frustrated with all that was happening with little or no results.the check engine light had come on and was taken to the dealer on several occasions for the same problem.the front end was unstable. *sc

Sliding doors on both sides have stopped working electronically. The doors must be forced manually and this is very difficult. Toyota will not address this issue.

2002 sienna driver side sliding door stop working.i took it to dealer and they said it is a cable and known issue.

Have had the sliding door looked out & "re-set" 4 times.if we pull the door a little, it will close, but will not open or close with any button (front panel, key fob or side panel). Today it started to close on my child & she couldn't get it to stop, her backpack strap was caught on the seat.pretty scary.right now the kids are climbing in through the front passenger door.also, about 1/2 the time even with manually closing the door, it remains open & will beep when i put it in gear, so i have to jump out & go push it closed.*

Power sliding door will not close. When pushed by hand, the safety mechanism engages and re-opens the door. I have disengaged power to door using dashboard switch. Will bring in for repair later this week.

Every door handle on the vehicle has broken from the inside and outside. Almost every toyota sienna i see on the road had atleast one of there handles broken off. I really think toyota should have a recall on this. The door has actually swung open while i was driving because i could not tell if it was closed proper. It did not result in an accident or more damage but could very easily have.

2002 toyota sienna passenger door behind driver not opening. Automatic door doesn't close. Have been to the shop for these problems. Problems persist.

Passenger side power door jammed, would not open after slow speed crash which knocked off the outside door handle.toyota of santa barbara, ca took a week and charged $2500 to fix just the power electrical door, no body work (that was extra).door has never worked properly ever since.many incidences of door not shutting or opening when using control buttons inside car. After 19 months, power door jammed while open and could not close it by power or manually, attempted to drive to service station while in the jammed open position and while moving, the door slammed closed on its own, popping the wire cable, which is now dangling.door now works part of the time manually, not at all with power, no motor sound at all.door opening mechanism on inside of door frequently jams in the pushed in position and then door is completely inoperable.this is severe safety issue.children in back cannot exit on that side.toyota should recall and have power doors converted to a safe, reliable, manual opening mechanism.

Drivers side sliding door (power) will no longer work except manually.an annunciator on the dash indicate "pwr door" in red.

I had a toyota sienna le 2002. I went to the dealers 3 years ago to replace the sliding door, during that time it was still under warranty. Somehow the problems appear again, my sliding won't open is like it stick with glue. It's totally stuck no matter what i do it won't opened. I need to know does toyota still helped me fixed this problem or i had to used my own problem to fixed it. First of all there is nothing wrong with the car, the only problem is the sliding door, i am afraid it will happened to other doors soon. Can somebody help me out with this problem. Thanks alot.

Automatic door opens, but will not close. Owners manual rescue information does not work. Three major and several minor failures. Door opened while on vacation and was not closed until we could get away from the beach. Today opened door in rain storm and it would not close. Have taken it in under warranty repair was lubricant. Today took it in and they want 70.00 dollars to diagnose the problem plus repair. They closed it again with massive lubrication.

The vehicle needed new tires due to front end being out of alignment.the consumer requested information about the premature tire wear problem on late model toyota sienna.*sc

The lower rear mount for the passenger-side rear shock absorber was found when the vehicle was stationary to have become partially fractured over time. It is made of thin hollow metal with internal threads. There is no replacement for this except to purchase a large multi-functional unit costing $1,688.00

Tire burst at less than 30mph. 3+ inch rip through exterior sidewall along radial line of tire. No impacts or other adverse initiating events. No signs of other puncture. Uneven and premature tire wear.alignment problems

I reported the incident to toyota and got file#200208160275 and to dunlop and got report#568588, none of the two seem to really care about the problem, toyota mentioned it was a dunlop problem and that toyota does not warranty the tires, dunlop mentions that i have to take the tire to a dunlop dealer and they will only replace the tire blown but not the one at the other side of the car.we feel really unsafe with these tires as there was no visible casue to the problem except for the heat and the speed, we almost lost control of the car.

The spare tire is mounted under the vehicle with the shredder valve oriented downward for easy access. The wheel is steel and is located so the tires kick up water and road sand and, with this orientation, water is trapped, like in a bowl, and sits on the steel. The paint has long been blasted away from the sand exposure and now the wheel is rusted so badly it is extremely thin and cannot be used without risking failure of the wheel, especially on the front where loads can reach in excess of 2500 pounds in a dynamic fatigue situation. It is important to note this sienna has been recalled once already for rust in this area, thanks to you guys, as rust was damaging the retaining system and the tire was falling off in traffic. They have seen the rustedwheels and the strength is now unpredictable. Road salt, rain, sand etc. Amounts. The system does not have any type of cover. Dealer told me it was not a problem. We have had 2 flat tires and i think with my wife & kids in the car it is a problem. It is a problem waiting to happen.

The electric sliding door mechanism broke down . It open but it doesn't close.it gets stock.

Since purchase of vehicle had 8 repairs on sliding manual doors. They end up getting stuck so you cant open it to get in or out. Had 1 or 2 repairs 2003 at mark jacobson toyota,6 repairs(2004,05,06) at fred anderson toyota,1 repair tao auto(2010), in need of repair now also.

Incident #1 (6/3/2017) - took foot off accelerator pedal when turning on city street.car proceeded to accelerate on its own went up to 35 mph for several blocks incident #2 (6/4/2017) - while parking car in driveway, applied foot on brake pedal.engine roared and thrusted forward.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota sienna.while driving 40 mph the contact released the accelerator pedal and the vehicle continued to accelerate. The contact tried applying the brakes but the vehicle would not slow down completely. The contact shifted the vehicle into neutral and it still did not slow down. The contact then shifted the vehicle into park while the vehicle was in motion. The contact was able to pull the vehicle over and shut it off. The contact restarted the vehicle and the rpm's began to increase rapidly. The contact pumped the accelerator pedal and the rpm's decreased. The vehiclewas diagnosed by three local mechanics and neither one of them could duplicate the failure. The dealer was also unable to duplicate the failure and that "gunk" could have composed in the engine, clogged it which would have caused the vehicle to accelerate. The contact stated that the failure is directly related to the current recall for the pedal. The failure mileage was 83,271.

I drive a 2002 toyota sienna xle and have experienced a lurching/accelerating when i am at a full stop. When it happens (which is becoming more frequent) it seems awkward.now, i wonder is this part of the accelerator problem too? *cw

Toyota sienna van appeared to have sudden acceleration problem when stopped at stop sign.engine revved up as accelerator was about to be applied, so i had to apply brakes as car was making sudden movements.quickly put car into neutral position.

The contact owns 2002 toyota sienna. The contact stated that both the front driver and passenger side windows would open and close without the key in the ignition. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that they were unaware of what caused the failure. The dealer then advised the contact that the engine throttle was causing the accelerator pedal to stick and would need to be repaired. The contact stated that the pedal seemed tight but she did not realize there was a failure with the pedal and engine throttle. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 33,000 and the current mileage was 35,000. Updated 1/19/2010updated 03/25/11

After a blowout on my left front tire on my 2002 toyota sienna xle, i discovered that the lug nuts designed for the aluminum wheels do not fit the steel wheel of the full size spare, and toyota does not provide the "acorn" type lug nuts for the spare.the lug nuts for the aluminum wheels do not seat properly against the steel wheel spare.i believe that not providing the proper lug nuts for the spare is a serious omission on toyota's part and makes driving with the spare with the improper lug nuts very dangerous.*la
