Dt*: the contact stated while driving 35 mph a vehicle pulled out at an intersection resulting in the contact's vehicle hitting the other vehicle in the side.there was pre-impact braking.this was a frontal impact.the front end of the vehicle was pushed up to the engine, however the air bags failed to deploy. The seat belts were in use however injuries were sustained to the driver.the air bag warning light did not illuminate.the dealership and manufacturer have not been alerted.the police were alerted to the scene and a report was filed.the police report stated there were no injuries. Updated 07/28/06.
Toyota sienna has air bag flashing, it just last 12/12/20014, so i brought it to fremont toyota for check upand told them about the flashing air bag ask them if if is part of toyota air bag recall. They charge me$152.00 to find out the problem. After 2 hrs, they say, they need more hours to find the problem and they are charging me another $152.00. I thought the $152.00 in the first place they tell you the problem.is this right when they estimate the hour. They can diagnose the problem.to pay extra i don"t have enough money.. Is this air bag problem is toyota recall. I am afraid for my family safety.thanks:conrad
The seat belt pretensioner was faulty and not working properly.it stopped the srs deploy and have the airbag light on.
After stopping for registration, my son and i got back into our 2001 toyota sienna minivan to continue on to our previously registered site at a cub scouts "jamboree". I think that i had a seizure (i don't remember anything at this time). Neither i nor my child was buckled in, and we traveled across a field and across a small creek, with the end result the head-on collision into the far side of the creek. I was badly injured, and my son was declared "brain dead" 5 days later. No air bags deployed, and i am now reporting it because if they had, we may have had an entirely different result. After researching this particular problem, i discovered that the failure to deploy air bags was cited by a previous author. I am intrigued, to say the least....
The driver was unable to stop the van in time and the passenger side of front bumper of the 2001 toyota sienna van hit the wall of a house but no air bags came out or inflated. The van is totally damaged and not driveable.
On october 28,2006, my son and i returned to the site of the accident, the nc state highway patrol driving track. Once through registration, we re-entered the 2001 toyota sienna minivan. Unfortunately, we did not use the seat belts, since we could see the spot we had been assigned. Sometime during this move, i must have had a seizure, since the only thing i remember is someone helping me out of the driver's side door. Once at the hospital, i lapsed into a coma, which was to last for the next 18 days. Once i woke up, i was told that my son had died, and was buried. It was stated to me that we weren't wearing our seat belts. I said, "what about the airbags?" they hadn't deployed, it turned out. I realize that we would have been more safe if we had been wearing our seat belts. But i also know that the airbags should have deployed, since the estimated speed at time of impact was 50 mph. Since we had gone through a creek, and slammed into the opposite creek bank in a basic head on collision. I also know that things would have been considerably different if the airbags had deployed, since both my son and i sustained traumatic brain injuries (tbi's) . Once i was able to use a computer, i researched airbag failures in toyota vehicles, and found numerous incidents and anecdotes of other peoples's experience with the same problem - failure of the airbags to deploy, when it was clearly obvious that they were needed. I also wondered about the commonality of the problem, and began to suspect a company-wide policy to make it very hard for the airbags to deploy, since it was a hot topic then to talk about airbags as an enemy, since some reports were noting accidents and injuries attributed to the airbags' mis-deployment. I am not at peace with the toyota company's usual denial of anything not working perfectly and properly and that there was a safety issue involving their airbags.
Right side rear window fell offwhile drivingat 30 mph. Consumer will send a picture.dealer notified.
We want to file a complaint regarding the lack of lower anchor tethers and back tethers for children's carseats in the second row passenger seat in our new 2002 toyota minivan.it was our understanding that they were required on 2002 models.when i called toyota to complain, they stated their reason for not complying with the regulation was that they did not want to interfere with egress from the third row.i pointed out to them that egress would be prohibited since the seatbeltswould be blocking the egress.the dealer did give us the option to return the vehicle, however, we were not able to find a honda odyssey available for purchase.so we are stuck with 1990 technology on a 2002 vehicle.we feel this violates the spirit of the regulation, and we are filing this complaint in an attempt to make toyota consider children's safety in all seats in their vehicles.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. The contact stated that the brakes were depressed with the vehicle turned off. He then shifted into reverse and the vehicle began to roll backward. The contact was able to maintain control of the vehicle until it stopped. In addition, the driver side running board melted andfractured in several places. The dealer advised that they were unable to replace the running board because it was no longer in stock. The manufacturer did not provide any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 113,770.updated 11/15/10 the dealer was able to duplicate, but was unable to solve it. Updated 11/26/10
Our 2001 toyota sienna has problem with the entire electrical system. The lights, interior and exterior, as well as all electrical outlets pulsate. They continuously fluxuate from dim to bright. There are even times when i have it on cruise and press on the brake that the radio goes off temporarily. Toyota has attempted to fix it but now they tell us that this is common with the siennas and avolans that have automatic climate control. They tell us that this is not a safety issue that i just need to drive it as is. We certainly disagree. Since this effects the entire electircal system, we are concerned that we may have a complete power failure while traveling. We also, are concerned since this is an electrical malfunction, we do not want to ever experience an electrical fire. Finally, we are concerned about driving at night with lights that rapidly fluxuate between dim and normal. I posted the date as may because this is when we first realisted this was happening. We bought the car in march.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. The contact stated that the passenger's side sliding door warning lamp illuminated indicating that the door was ajar. The contact mentioned that the failure drained the battery. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the sliding door electronic control unit needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 32,231 and the current mileage was 34,451.
The rear automatic sliding door fails to open or close. Can no longer be opened manually from inside or outside. Seen reports of same or similar issues on line.other electrical issues have appeared with the vehicle as well.
Vehicle skid control computer broke and needed to be replaced ($2000).
The steel cable for the power sliding door snapped while door was being opened electronically. The right side sliding door was unable to open wider than a foot since the cable snapped while in operation.passengers, including children, had to exit the parked vehicle through the driver's side sliding door into oncoming traffic.the door remained inoperable until we were able to cut the remaining length of steel cable hanging from the vehicle onto the roadway with wire cutters.the door now is a manual sliding door until the entire motor and steel cable system can be replaced.
Power sliding door stuck.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. While the contact was driving approximately 40 mph, the horn was engaged and failed to function. The failure occurred fifteen minutes after the vehicle was in operation. The vehicle was inspected by two independent mechanics. The contact was informed that the electrical components under the air bag required replacement. The failure continued to occur. The vehicle had not been repaired when the complaint was filed. The failure mileage was 87,000. The current mileage was 93,000.
2001 toyota sienna le, purchased new, started having problems. "check engine" light came on when vehicle had approximately 25,000 plus/minus miles. Under warranty, toyota dealership replaced the oxygen sensor without a charge. However, during this process, the "beep" signal you hear when locking-unlocking the vehicle with remote key was disappeared. This is also fixed under warranty. The "check engine" light came on again when the vehicle had about 35,000 miles. Toyota dealership said it is due to a dirty vacuum hose, they cleaned it with a charge little over $100.00. The next day the "check engine" light came on again, this time the toyota dealership said they need to replace the charcoal canister (parts free, but we have to pay labor--about $100.00). This thing causes extreme mental distress, time, money, security etc.
Instrument and vehicle lights began to flicker. Electric drivers seat works randomly and background light for radio has stopped working as well as the cruise light stopped workingon the instrument display.
The left and right rear passenger doors failed to open due to breakage of the cable.i am uncertain of whether the child safety locks were engaged, however, the doors will not open wider than approx. 6".rear passengers had to crawl out of the van via the driver's or front passenger door.i am elated that the failure of the doors did not occur during a hazardous condition, since this would have placed the rear occupants in extreme danger.if toyota and nhtsa was aware that there is a failure in the cables and the manual release of the rear doors, there should have been a safety alert and/or recall of the vehicles for repair of the vans.the failure of the doors is not simply a matter of cosmetic issues, it is potentially hazardous and life threatening.at a minimum, the doors should have allowed for manual opening and closing, if the cables should break.the breaking of the cable, along with the inability to open the door is a defect in workmanship, since the door did not open to allow the passengers to exit the vehicle.i am requesting, along with all of the other owners who have registered complaints, that the agency investigate this matter.at a minimum, the doors should default to manual mode.
1. Electric sliding door opens while driving. Interior lights won't shut off while driving. Check engine light stays on.2. Driver distraction.3. Toyota "resets the brain" but it is just a matter of time before it fails again.
2001 sienna bought new from dealer. Driver side passenger power slide door had problems with 'switch' and ecu 8/2002, 11/2003, 1/2004, 7/2004, 7/2006 4/2007. Those are just the times i brought it in.other times i just let it go for a while.toyota fixed part until warranty was up.now they want me to pay to replace the parts -- parts that continue to fail.sliding door either does not open via power button, or will not close all the way.safety issue when can not get door to close all the way.now the other power slider door is also not working.i wrote to toyota 5/2007, they never even acknowledged my letter.
Horn will not work in the rain or when you drive in water. It takes about a day for the horn to dry out for the horn to work at all. People could get killed when the horn will not work in the rain or water. Toyota needs to have a recall now to save the lives of millions of men, women and children in the usa.
Complaint regarding the 2001 toyota sienna driver's side door continuously opens and closes.*mrthe only way to stop the door was to disengage the power and close it manually.the dealer determined that the motor that operates the power door and the ecu needed to be replaced at a cost of $1939.the manufacturer has agreed to assist with the cost of the repair, however the consumer's portion is still quit costly.
Vsc and engine check light came on. When i brought to dealer. They told me gas cap was not on tight. I thought that was an incorrect diagnosis since the cap was on and i had been filling my gas for more than 3 years.they reset the vsc light and gave me car back after charging me $98.light came back on one week later.
Vehicle shut off without prior warning.battery/ alarm system/ key, and starter were checked.
Dt: the contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna.the fuel air sensor failed.also, fuel sensor failed in contact'sson's 2001 toyota highlander which had the same mileage.called toyota, and they said there were no recalls . Had both parts replaced, $282.00 each. Now the ignition has failed.
We own a 2001 toyota sienna van, we purchased it in 2001 but it was used with 18,000 miles on it. Since purchasing the vehicle, several things have gone wrong.#1- passenger side power window had a defective motor and would not go back up.took it to the dealer who said it was not covered under warranty, so we had to pay out of pocket for that repair.#2- driver's side sliding door would not latch shut.the button got stuck from the inside which prevented the door from latching shut.this had happened many times before but we were able to get the button popped out and the door would shut.but on one occasion the button popped out and the door still would not shut.we had to drive home holding the door shut the entire way!of course, this is a huge safety issue with our 2 young children in the car.the problem was fixed at the dealer (again not under warranty), but the door still can not be opened from the inside, or the button gets stuck in.#3- check engine light came on and a diagnostic test revealed the following problems- idle air control, bank 1 sensor (most likely oxygen sensor), leaky charcoal canister.we fixed the idle air control since that was causing the van to not start and stall.this repair was almost $700, and not covered under warranty because we had gone over 36,000 miles.we did not fix the other two problems last month due to cost.the van overheats and can not be driven.we wrote a letter to toyota and talked to them via phone.they told us there is nothing they can do because our van is not a legal us van- it is was built in canada.we bought it at a toyota dealer in rochester, ny and were never told it was canadian.we were also told that no warranty would ever be covered in the us because it is canadian.carfax.com says it was built in the united states however. We tried to go the route of the lemon law, but could not.
Vehicle shut off without prior warning.battery/ alarm system/ key, and starter were checked.
Electrical system containing fuel injector relay failed. Fuel injector stopped working and car lost power on highway.replacing relay and fuse by dealership did not fix problem, ended up failing again after being returned from dealership.
A known issue with these 3.0 l v6 engine. Heavy smoke from the exhaust pipe. Visible oil sludge under the oil refill cap.
Takata recall.white smoke comes out of the exhaust when i start the car. Then smoke disappears or stay at low level during driving. Decrease oil. I put one quarter oil each week. Mechanics says it may head gaskit or seals. Costs 2000 and above to repair. If not better to garbage this vehicle. It has a clean title with 106k.
I have a sienna le 2001.118,000 miles. We have been the only owners since we bought it. We have no perfect record of oil changes but we have done it periodically.about 3-4 months ago,it was running ok, but it blew out white-ish/ blue-ish smoke occasionally (usually when first starting, it didn't seem to make a difference if it was hot or cold). It also had little and occasional power loss when accelerating from a stop. I took it to the dealer where we bought it, and they said they just took off the top cover of the engine and it looked like it was gummed up with oil.i have changed the pcv valve, i took it to a place for an oil and oil filter change, i am concerned the damage will continue to the engine.the dealersaid i need a new engine, costing around $8000.i asked a second opinion of the mechanic that has worked on our cars, and he thinks he would need to take apart the engine and figure out he problem, costing around $2000-$3000, he also mentioned the possibility of a new motor.honestly, i do not recall receiving information about the "special policy adjustment" from toyota or dealer regarding check-replace the engines that are or could be damaged from sludge.i will appreciate your input and support.
Mechanic found significant sludging oil.dealer stated needed to flush and changenew oil.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. The contact stated that when driving approximately 60 to 65 mph, the vehicle would suddenly stall without warning. The vehicle was unable to restart so it was towed to an independent mechanic. After diagnosis, they advised that the engine needed to be replaced due to sludge build-up and oil jelling. The vehicle was repaired for the engine. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were approximately 134,000. The vin was unavailable.
Consumer statedengine sensor light continued to come on. Consumer was concerned that engine will fail while driving.
I bought the car in 2001, used at 18,000 miles. I have had all scheduled maintenance done.on aug 8th i had and oil change and by sept. 17 there was no oil , another oil change was done. By sept. 22 there was no oil. I brought the car to stevenson toyota in jacksonville, nc, where they told me i had an oil gelling problem.they are keeping my car for 1-2 weeks, without the use of a loaner car.they state that toyota will clean the parts one time as a good will gesture and possibly pay for a rental car for 3 days. They also said that my warranty and extended warranty does not cover this.my car has approx 55,000 miles.i am truly afraid to take this car back from them as i am unsure of it's reliability or theirs.

I am sending this letter to express concern relative to the safety and usability of our 2001 toyota sienna mini van.we have had continued problems with the van that has been addressed with the dealer (kenny kent toyota in evansville, in) as well as toyota.the engine is our brand new van had gelling issues to due manufacture?s defects.the problems are continuing to date.in the manufacture?s response it states that toyota offered goodwill assistance to us for the engine gelling.(this happened to a brand new van).it also states that this was not covered under warranty.toyota said that this was a warranty issue and it is also listed as warranty in toyota documentation.according to the owner?s warranty information book, the basic warranty is 36 months or 36,000 miles and the power train warranty is 60 months or 60,000 miles.the defect with the engine based upon the warranty as stated in toyota?s warranty information book states that all repairs and adjustments needed to correct defects in materials and workmanship of any part supplied by toyota is covered.in the manufacture?s response it states that the vehicle is not exhibiting any warrantable nonconformities that substantially impair the use, value or safety of the vehicle.unfortunately this statement is not true.we have continued to have extreme electrical problems with the van.these problems are continuing to date following toyota?s attempts to repair the engine.on one occasion my wife and my six-year old daughter were in the van alone when the van refused to start.it was a 90+-degree day.toyota service cannot find the cause and problems continue.the engine doesn?t have the power it did prior to the repairs, the valves clatter very loudly and the engine makes a chugging sound when it idles.we now have a new van that for lack of any word has been butchered.the value of the vehicle has been drastically diminished.noble jones 801 s. At 54,525 miles, the check engine light came on.it was diagnosed as "replace air/fuel sensor b1 s1."failure caused excessive damage because the sensor fused into the rear exhaust manifold.diagnostic testing $49.00sensor replacement part227.52" " labor150.00rear exhaust manifold154.21rear exhaust manifold gasket29.27repair was not done at a toyota dealership.i am reporting this so that toyota will change the design.failed part should not damage surrounding structures.suggest recall on this part if toyota continues to use this design.
Consumer took vehicle for a oil change todealership.mechanic dicovered a oil leak underneathvehicleoil pan gasket and a leaking bolt andseal. Engine needs a seal replacements. Also, there is a transmission leak.front brakes are grinding metal to metal.dealership is aware of the problems.
Engine check light came on while driving. Took to dealer, had to replace vacuum switch.2 days later, same problem occurred.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. While the contact was driving 65 mph he noticed that the check engine light appeared on the dashboard, moments later the contact heard a knocking sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced due to excessive engine sludge. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 105,000.
The vehicle experienced an oil leaked.
The engine failed and had to be replaced at a cost of $5,000 due to oil sludge buildup. Traveling on i-4 from tampa to orlando the check engine light appeared then we heard a tapping from the engine,. I pulled off the road and aaa towed the vehicle and a rental car company picked us up. I had two elderly passengers (in their 80's) with walkers who had to traverse the grass along the interstate to get to the rental car and were nearly blown over by passing trucks. Toyota refused to honor a claim for repairs although they had agreed in a recent louisiana lawsuit to cover said repairs for 8 years from date of purchase. My failure was 8 years and 10 months from purchase. The sludge took much longer than 8 months to build up but toyota refused to honor their stated commitment to assist all affected by oil sludge damage (over 3,000 complaints). Their product was defective and dangerous and their denial to assist was dishonorable.
Defective engine due to manufacturing defect.
Initially oil leak after oil change.was told that transmission pan was leaking and paid for replacement.transmission fluid then started leaking.returned vehicle to dealer; transmission pan was tightened.noticed fluid still leaking; returned vehicle to dealership.dealership could not detect source of fluid leak; placed die in oil and transmission fluids; asked to return vehicle in a few weeks.returned vehicle to dealership; was told there was a leak surrounding engine seal and seal would need to be repaired.
The engine had to be replaced due to an oil sludge build-up.
The engine of my toyota sienna 2001 with an identified oil sludge problem seized while driving at highway speeds.vehicle could not be controlled and my toddler threw up in fear as we tried to avoid being smashed into while the car coasted to a stop.mechanic repeatedly said cam seized, metal filings found, and "could not think of any other reason but the sludge problem."toyota refused to repair the vehicle under unlimited mileage, 8-year warranty. Car is presently with dealer and may be examined by engineers from nhtsa (dealer agreed on 12/22/05).this failure was predicted by another dealer.car always smoked--blamed on "new engine break in", "lack of maintenance", etc.later toyota sent letter about the issue. This time dealer agrees maintenance was excellent.
Engine oil light came on, then check engine light came on, engine shut off, no oil present in engine.

While travel notice indicator light flashed dealer was contacted, anddealerreplaced vehicle with new model.new vehicle had same problem with engine.please provide further information.
After my engine registered "low oil", the mechanic found significant sludging. It was flushed and changed and then in <1000mi there was no oil again. Now toyota says the leaks around the valves are due to my "neglect" in changing oil. I have the receipt from 4 mos ago for oil change. I also was told they would not consider paying for it because it was my lack of oil change that "caused" the sludging (despite my receipt) and that i needed all my oil change receipts for them to consider a claim (2 1/2 year old car.)
Consumer states that an indicator illuminated stating that there was an engine malfunction with transmission and stated consumer needed to stop driving immediately, dealer replaced the vehicle with a new one.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. The contact stated that the vehicle emitted a strong gasoline fuel odor while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where the contact was advised that the odor was due to a faulty fuel canister and cap.the dealer replaced the fuel canister and cap but the failure was not corrected.the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the failure was located at the fuel pipe assembly lines. The fuel pipe assembly lines were replaced twice to correct the failure. The manufacturer denied assistance with the repair, due the vehicle mileage. The failure mileage was 102,542 and the current mileage was 103,515.

I fllled the fuel tank on 26 nov 2003, and drove the vehicle 13 miles.it remained parked in the driveway, which slopes toward the rear at about 20 degrees, until 28 nov 2003 at 12:30 pm.there was at that time raw gasoline dripping in teaspoon to tablespoon quantities from a line in front of the fuel tank to the driveway, with a puddle about 18 by 28 inches.i drove the vehicle about 1 mile with the engine running smoothly, after which for about 4 miles the engine hesitated and surged at speeds over 35 mph.the remainder of the 10 mile trip, the engine ran smoothly again.later that day, the service rep called to tell me they had completed diagnostic testing which showed a defective charcoal canister, which needed to be replaced for $552.76, at 62,612 miles. The repair report states that the charcoal canister was saturated with raw fuel.this is an obvious safety hazard.
Electrical system containing fuel injector relay failed. Fuel injector stopped working and car lost power on highway.replacing relay and fuse by dealership did not fix problem, ended up failing again after being returned from dealership.

The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna.when the contact attempts to add fuel to the vehicle, the gas pump would click as if the tank was full.however, the vehicle's fuel gauge indicated that the tank was empty.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they changed the charcoal filter.the failure continued.the contact took the vehicle to an independent repair shop who was able to repair the failure.the shop replaced the fuel rollover valve.the contact stated that six months later, the failure recurred.the current and failure mileages were 61,000.
Failure code p1155 "air fuel sensor failure" at 40k miles$282.00 for just the sensor.the vehicle is less than 3 years old no help offered from the dealer with cost of repair.from my research on various bullitens, i find that toyota has had numerous problems with thier sensors.the part number of my faulty part 89467-41040.i own two 2001 toyota vehicles and all service oil changes provided at dealer ships.i had two gm's and because i had my service provided at the dealer they took care of things like this out to 50k miles. Attitude like this will push me back to gm next time.i think it's about time to swap back because i am upset with toyota's attitude!
Consumer stated that while driving and without warning there is mold building up inside the vapor system causing the consumer to smell strong fumes inside the vehicle. Dealer notified. Ts
I have a 2001 toyota sienna.. Having problems with evap control system. I cannot fill up the gas tank continously.. Stops every few seconds... Sometimes spilling gasoline..(started at about 46,000 miles)..i paid $98 dollars to a local toyotal service center to have it check. They said, my van has a problem with the "charcoal cannister" and would cost me $500.00 dollars to replace...i called toyota customer service to find out if they will cover the cost of the replacement since they have a settlement issue with epa regarding these kind of problems. I understand they have a $20 million dollar settlement w/ epa for these kinds of violations.. But they cover vehicles manufactured up to 1998 only.they have extended the warranties for these vehicles to 14 years or 150,000 miles... If they are covering vehicles much older than mine, i think that the warranty for my vehicle should also be extended because it has a problem relating to the emissions.also,$500 dollars is too much for a charcoal cannister replacement..i would appreciate it very much if you can get this issue resolve with toyota.they can always get the $500 from the $20 million settlement they had agreed w/ epa.thank you very much, esteban
The vapor valve, which usually stops the refueling when the gas tank is filled up, has been faulty.in essence, when trying to fill up a gas, the pressure in the gas tank builds up and stops the gas pump from refueling every 1 to 2 gallonsit has taken us many garage visits, including toyota dealers, to identify the problem correctly.toyota usa refused to cover the problem since they claims that our car is out of warranty (toyota sienna le 2001).we only contend that this defect was due to the faulty original inspection at the factory and ask that toyota should be responsible for its own products.

My 9 year old son and i were on our way home from work last night and i heard something snap on my 2001 toyota sienna.i then heard something dragging so i immediately pulled over to check and realized the fuel tank was dragging and the back straps holding the gas tank up had broken loose causing the back section of the tank to drag on the road.i had to call a tow truck to tow vehicle to the mechanics.since i work 18 miles away i find getting to work difficult.
I purchased a brand new 2001 toyota sienna xle in 2001. The passenger side power sliding door and the drivers side power sliding door has given us problems since we purchased the car. We had it back to the dealer for the same power door issue at least 11 times. They now want to charge me. The ntsb should force a recall to fix this issue. The door will not open or close and now it will not move at all either by remote or manually. We purchased the dual power sliders as a convenience and now we have inconvenience. We have not been able to use the door properly for years, we have never had the benefit of the power sliding doors that we paid for. I would request that the government investigate the numerous complaints on the various blogs for the same issue described here. We have had this problem for over ten years without a resolution provided by toyota. The doors still do not function. Toyota does not care.
We own a 2001 toyota sienna van.all but 1 of 5door handles on this van have broken and the door handles on each of the 4 doors (except passenger front) have cracked and broken clean off the door.currently, the driver side is taped on.i feel that this could have happened to 1 by user wear.however, i'm not inclined to believe that all could break so easily from user wear and tear.this creates a significant safety hazard in accessing the vehicle in emergency situations as clearly the only access will be through windows at some point.
Both driver and passenger sliding doors will not open from the inside. The child locks are not on, and occasionally the doors will not latch closed. After fidgeting with the lock and latch, it will eventually latch.
The passenger-side sliding door (manual) on our 2001 sienna began having problems approx. 6 mo. Ago, with the inside button to open the door intermittently sticking - happened both in open & closed positions.obviously a safety concern, both for being able to close the door in order to drive, and for opening the door particularly in case of an emergency.at the beginning, a good "whack" on the door would usually release the button, and the door would function.now, the door is not working at all - thankfully, it is in the closed position, but it is totally non-functional as we cannot open it at all.had one or two episodes of the driver-side door getting stuck open - the latch had a problem that prevented closure (seemed that the latch got into the "locked" position somehow when door was open, and then wouldn't release in order to close it).now, the rear hatch lock/latch is not working either.we cannot open the hatch, which is extremely inconvenient and also another safety concern.if any emergency would happen which would require us to exit the vehicle quickly (or if we needed to be rescued from the vehicle), the only doors that actually work all the time are the two front doors.this is a huge concern to me, particularly if we have passengers riding in the 3rd row seats.we have not yet taken it to a dealer for repair - have not heard of good outcomes for this particular problem, and don't want to spend a ton of money.

I own a 2001 toyota sienna van ce.in the past 1.5 years all door handles have separated from the car.this includes the driver, passenger, rear driver, rear passenger and tailgate doors handles.these handles are made from plastic and crack and break off at the hinge point.i don't believe the number of breakages of these handles can be caused by normal wear and tear and certainly with two small children and two adults making use of the vehicle would constitute normal wear and tear.this problem is a defect of design or workmanship of the handle and the cost to repair is approximately $350 per handle.it is a serious threat should they break at the improper time or for emergency access to the automobile. I have addressed my concerns with toyota and they don't believe there is a need to correct.please investigate and respond.[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The door latch on the passenger side sliding door has failed on two occasions.the first time was in september 2007.we had it replaced at the dealership at our own expense.then it failed again last week.the dealership tells us it needs to be replaced again.the latch on the rear door has also failed and been repaired at our expense.
Both power sliding doors fail to work. Neither door opening switch will open or close them. Also, right side will not even open manually from inside the vehicle! safety issue. Repairs for the powered door issue were estimated at $350 for the door computer + 350 to install- per door! outrageous. American car companies have been slammed for this kind of thing. How about toyota?
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna.while changing the rear light bulb, the contact noticed that there was no safety latch to release an occupant if they became trapped in the rear of the vehicle.the contact feels that this is a safety issue in the event of an emergency.she is in the process of taking the vehicle to the dealer for further inspection.the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not designed with that feature; therefore, no compensation would be provided.the failure mileage was 110,000 and current mileage was 111,000.
{much of this content is copied from another complaint, but we are experiencing the same problems}sliding door latches get stuck sometimes in the open and sometimes in the closed position. When doors are closed we are unable to push the button inside or use the outside handle to release the latch and open the door. If the door is open when this happens we are then unable to close the door as it will not latch. When the door remains open this is an obvious safety issue and the van is undriveable as doing so would put the passengers at risk. When the door is stuck in a close position it makes exiting the vehicle difficult which would be a safety issue if there were an emergency and a quick exit were necessary.the back hatch latch has also broken. We have removed the cover from the back hatch and with a great deal of manipulation we can usually make this door work.the power sliding door is now stuck open and will not close.the outside handle has completely broken off.the handle on the manual sliding door is going to break off soon.please note the vehicle is in good shape otherwise and has never been in an accident. 2001 toyota sienna le/xle.
When child lock is on the power door on passeger side can be opened by a 4 year old.
Passenger sliding door would not close/open electronically or manually.the button to turn off the electronic open/close did not work. Toyota service could not fix.had them cut cable so can close and open door manually.until the cable was cut, door could not be used to exit van.
Rear tailgate latch broke.because there's no remote way to open the latch (either wireless or wired), it's necessary to climb inside the vehicle remove and disassemble the interior rear-hatch door paneling and manually engage the release cable.this is the third time this has happened with this vehicle.
2001 toyota sienna... The plastic door handles are breaking off... The right, rear slider handle broke off in 2007..next the left, rear slider handle broke off... This was dangerous since the child lock was on preventing opening the door from either inside or outside the vehicle with the children trapped inside...now the front passenger door handle has broken.....toyota dealership charges $89.73 for each handle not including installation....it is obvious to me plastic fatigue is the problem...3 of 4 handles have failed in past 3 years...i contend these handles as well as the fourth remaining were and are defective.
I have a 2001 toyota sienna and the both the rear sliding doors have had intermittent issues with either opening or closing since around 2003 (although more often seen with driver side). When the issues is present the doors work fine when the automatic open/close is turned off. The issue may occur more often when raining then when dry. One observance of issue is that when auto open is engaged the door makes a clicking sound but doesn't open. The other observance of issue is when the door is open and the auto close is engaged the door starts to close (maybe an inch) and then re-opens...the only way to get the door closed is to turn off the auto open/close. While under warranty i took the van to be serviced twice, but was not able to re-produce the issue at the dealership...as such they would not even look at it.
While driving over railroad tracks at 20 mphsliding door flew open. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further infomation.
2001 toyota sienna van.sticky right and left sliding doors.
Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle's sliding side door remained latched and once the door becomes latched it is very difficult to reopen.the vehicle was manufactured with a remote locking device.the dealer determined that the vehicle's push button needed to be replaced.the contact expressed that the problem could be electrical failure.the vehicle has not been fixed due to cost.
2001 toyota sienna le, manufactured in october 2000, both back sliding door handle buttons stick during hot weather preventing opening or closing of the door.if the door is open when the button sticks then you cannot shut the door.if the door is closed when the button sticks then you cannot open the door from the inside or the outside using the outside handle.the doors stay stuck until the button pops back out usually when the inside of the car temperature cools down.my children have been able to get out by going through the front doors of the van but an elderly person might not be able to do this and would be trapped in the back with both doors stuck shut.there is a service advisory for this problem dated oct. 27, 2000 for years 1998-2000 but there is nothing for 2001.the toyota extra care platinum extended warranty will not cover this problem because it is supposedly a button problem and not a mechanical problem.there is also a problem with water leaking in the trunk.we have not figured out were it is coming from yet. *nlm
Left passenger sliding door would not close. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who disconnected the motor to the sliding door.
There are 2 potentially serious problems that this vehicle has, which appear to be common, based on comments from 2 other families we know with the same problems in the same vehicle, a 2001 toyota sienna.the lock button on the rear van door gets stuck and apparently the only way to fix it is to bang on the handle until it pops back open. When in this position the door cannot be closed.the other is with the ignition lock; it sticks and locks even after the wheel may be disengaged; this leads to a possibility of being stranded, or worse.
Possible for people to become locked inside the vehicle with no way to open the doors.when doors are locked with the remote control (deliberately or accidentally), with no key in the ignition, the only way to unlock them is with the remote or turning the key in the ignition. The doors can be locked with the remote, and a person not having the remote will be unable to get out.this has happened to me at least 4 times since purchasing the car.*la
The contact owns 2001 toyota sienna. The contact stated the door latches were fractured on the front driver, passenger and rear passenger sliding door. The driver side sliding door failed and was unable to be opened. The contact stated that the only way to enter the vehicle was from the rear hatch. The manufacturer was contacted but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 115,000 and the current mileage was 118,000.
I was locked inside my 2001 toyota sienna ce van and couldn't get out for 3-4 minutes. I had been driving for 6-8 minutes and parked in a parking lot to go into a store.i turned the engine off and tried all the following:1.all door handles2.the "keyless" key fob3.the button on the driver's side arm rest in the door which enables/disables the door locks at each door4.the power window on the driver's sideonly after pressing all these buttons numerous times did the doors finally "wake up" and unlock.i suspect the problem has something to do with the electrical system, specifically the 50-month old battery.but even if the battery is low on power, why should the door locks be inoperable?should the locks automatically revert to the open position if there is insufficient electrical power?
The contact owns 2001 toyota sienna. The contact stated that both rear sliding doors handles failed. The exterior handle on the rear lift gate also failed. As a result, the power motor on both sliding doors was removed. Due to the removal of the power motors, the contact stated that the door handles were too thin to successfully open and close the doors. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures, but offered no assistance and advised the contact to replace the door handles. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 57,000.

It also makes it extremely difficult to fasten or release a child from a safety seat located in the back 2 rows of seats. The back hatch latch has also broken. A light squeeze of the handle while trying to open the hatch caused something to snap (a small plastic piece fell out) and since this is the one and only handle/latch to open the hatch i am no longer able to use the hatch nor open it to see what part needs to be replaced. The two side doors work occasionally but the back hatch is now completely unusable. Simply put i have had 3 out of my five doors fail within a month which i find absurd. Please note the vehicle is in good shape otherwise and has never been in an accident. 2001 toyota sienna le/xle
Repeated failure of power sliding door on 2001 sienna van. Dealer has attempted to fix on several occasions since time of purchase but failed. Vehicle is now out of warranty and will cost over $500.00 to repair. This is a safety issue since the drivers side door does not always fully close. According to nhtsa odi technical bulletins this has been an ongoing problem since 2001. Toyota should be required to recall the vehicles and pay for the repairs since this is a common problem with the 2001 model and a potential safety issue for children and adults.
Power sliding door stuck.
While drivingdriver's door opened and closedon its own. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the computer needed to be replaced.
1)rear hatch door latch broken.2) can not open rear hatch door.3) replaced rear hatch door latch.

Two issues on my 2001 toyota sienna with 113k miles:1) rear latch handle broke apart while attempting to open the rear hatch. The part that broke is plastic. The break occurred while trying to open the latch under normal operating conditions. Consequence of this part failure: unable to open the rear hatch. Correction: toyota dealer had to replace the entire mechanism (costing me $200).2) while investigating the broken latch issue, i observed that the mechanism that physically latches the rear door (to the minivan body) was loose. The three screws that secure/attach this latching mechanism in place where backed half-way out. Failure: no failure had occurred. However, if the three screws loosened more, i fear that the rear hatch could open while the van was in operation. Correction: toyota dealer tightened the three screws.
I owned a 2001 toyota sienna le that i bought use in april 2004. Three weeks ago, as i was driving on an expressway at a speed of 55 mph, my hood just popped opened and hit my windshield with a force of dynamite. Luckily i didnt get panic and looked through the clearance at the bottom of the arched hood and slowly stopped the vehicle on the side of the road. Nobody got hurt. When i took my vehicle to this dealer, they found the secondary hood latch was faulty and was left opened that supposed to prevent the hood to come loose in case someone lift the hood opener from inside by mistake. (there is a tension spring in latch mechanism that keeps the hook engaged to keep the hood from freeing was not strong enough) i asked the dealer if this faulty latch would be covered under toyota safety program but was refused and paid for it out of my pocket.i have inform toyota about this incident as well as to advise to take it seriously and at least pay for my repair cost of the latch and other damages done to my car due to this incident. I could have lost control of my vehicle and had run into someone else. I am in mechanical engineering profession and would suggest taking a deeper look into this problem since i know another person who had identical problem with the same model year. But toyota corporation, after writing them twice insists their vehicles have no problem. May be other people doesnt want to take time to write what they have faced. But two similar incidents cannot be a co-incident. I want this report to be known to other 2001-toyota sienna owners so they become aware of this seemingly small un- reported but deadly problem thanks syed n masood.
The vehicle learched forward from a an idling position while in parkup an inclined driveway
[this incident has also been reported to toyota - case # [xxx].] i exited parking lot and turned left to travel north on two-lane street at 5 pm. Immediately after entering the lane, my car began to decelerate. I pressed the accelerator, and it was stuck in position. I tapped the pedal, at which point the pedal locked in the down position, and the car raced forward, with tires screeching. I immediately hit the brakes and put in car in neutral. The engine continued to rev at 5000-6000 rpm while i pulled off to the shoulder on the right. After putting the shift into park, i reached down with my hand, noted there was no carpet interfering with the pedal, yet it was stuck in the downward position. I pulled back a few times and was able to free the accelerator pedal movement, at which point the engine began to idle. I tested the pedal several times before resuming my route. At my first left turn after the acceleration incident, i noted that the car had no power steering, and i was barely able to turn the car a sharp 90 degrees to the left. The remainder of my ride home, the car had no power steering.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).updated 4/19/2016
Check engine light illuminated, dealer stated there was foreign material in the valve body, the transmission valve body assembly was replaced, at 11109 miles the same problem occurred, consumer states he was informed there was a problem with the brain of the transmission.
Consumer states that an indicator illuminated stating that there was an engine malfunction with transmission and stated consumer needed to stop driving immediately, dealer replaced the vehicle with a new one.
When i got home put vehicle in park exited vehicle with it still running. Vehicle jumped into gear hit my garage causing damage to garage.

Car rolled uphill while in neutral into the garage from the driveway.iinjured my l knee as i was trying to get back in the car to stop itby being pinned by the drivers door as it hit a steel support post in the garage.
On 8/18/05 morning the shifter lever behind the steering wheel was broken loose that i had no control of the gears. Then i brought my van to stevens creek toyota (san jose, ca) where i bought the sienna van for repair. After the toyota technician opened up for inspection, i later went there to took some photos of the conditions, i found out that the main cause for the malfunction of the shifter was a big piece of cast iron (approx. 1/2" thick) that serves as a main frame or bracket for all other components in the assembly for support of their moving mechanism broke in half ( have photos to prove it) literally.since it appears as a "defective part" of the shifter and not a "wear & tear" condition, i 've requested toyota corp. (both local & headquartes) to replace it with free of charge. The request was declined due to warranty policy beyond 30,000 miles/ 3 year. Then toyota corp. Issued me a case no.:2005-0818-0778 (filed 8/18/05).i also asked service representative, auto mechanics, and toyota corp. Agent that have they seen or heard anything similar like my case, nobody could confirm it is a common problem of "wear & tear" beyond warranty period.the question is how a consumer like myself get projected from the "defective part"that a driver defends heavily for maneuvering of the vehicle has no control over the gears? fortunately, the incident didn't happen while i was driving on the freeway with my wife and (3) young kids or get stuck in the middle of the railroad with running train approaching.i believe that "safety issue" shall be the first priority needed to be resolved by toyota corp.
Our 2001 toyota sienna has seatbelt problems.3 of the seatbelts are now useless (locked up) and the driver seatbelt gets twisted up all the time.they are faulty seatbelts.this is the first vehicle that the seatbelts have gone out at 70,000 miles.dangerous.not happy.don't buy toyota.
The left third-row seat belt retractor on my 2001 toyota sienna le failed 2 weeks ago, rendering the seat belt inoperable.it cost over $400 to replace.two days ago, the right third-row seat belt retractor failed.we have approximately 87,000 on the vehicle, with normal use.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. The contacts rear seat belt was pulled out of the housing. The contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic to have the seat belt repaired. The mechanic advised the contact that the failure was caused from extensive use over time.the contact stated the seat belt should never come out of the housing and if the vehicle was involved in a crash someone could get injured due to the seat belt malfunctioning. The contact had not called the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 155,000.
The seat belt pretensioner was faulty and not working properly.it stopped the srs deploy and have the airbag light on.

While driving seat belts in the back will lock up when driving. Consumer has to unlock the belt and then relock it. Contacted dealer.
The center rear seat beltappears very unsafe. When locked in place, my children can easily loosen the belt with just the touch of their fingers. The belt does not come out of the lock, but it moves the tightness and the kids are sitting without any restraint. They are able to get up and move around! i took it to the local dealer (maroone toyota 4050 weston road-invoice #tocs317153) on 7/9/01. I was told that that is just how it is designed and there is nothing wrong. When i argued how unsafe it was, i was told maybe i should not put young children in that seat. How can this be??? all of my seats need to be utilized with my large family and my kids friends. Please tell me if you have gotten any other complaints on this. Thanks.

The front passenger side seat belt retractor would not retract. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Dt:consumer was driving2001 toyota sienna van when it stopped at a rest stop, his 13 year old son was unable to get out ofseat belt. The seat belt would not release, the seat belt kept getting tighter and tighter until it started to restrict the son'sbreathing. In order to get the seat belt loose consumer had to cut the belt. The part of the seat belt that would not release was the retractor. The boy was wrapped in the seat belt, but the latch was undone.he was wrapped in such a way that he could not get loose due to the retractor pulling on the belt. Consumer says that the retractor would continue to wind up when he was working on getting his son loose, but he could not get the retractor to releaseto allow him to unwrap his son, whosustained bruises aroundwaist.
The contact owns 2001 toyota sienna. The contact stated that the front passenger's seat independently moved back and forth. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that the front passenger's back rest bolt was fractured and separated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 115,699.
While driving at slow speeds and depressing the brake pedal, the deceleration is almost zero.pressing harder on the pedal does nothing to increase the deceleration.this has happened numerous times.i have had the vehicle into the shop several times and nothing could be found.i have replaced the master cylinder with no change.crashes were averted in some cases by inches.
I replaced my brakespad and routers less than a year ago and replaced all 4 tires december 2012 at sears. My abs light and tire pressure light come on every time i drive and recently i pulled out of my driveway at no more than 5 mph and pressed on the brake and i couldn't stop reversing in the street. I fell when i driving the anti brake system tries to work. Because my pedal jumps and vibrates and i hear clicking grinding sounds. I have had to stop intersections because my van wouldn't stop when i needed it too.
Within thelast year i have replaced my brake pads replace 3 times. Just last month i replaced my pads , rotors and calipers. But now my pads are grinding really bad again and it's been 30 days since i had new pads, rotors and calipers put on. Something is definitely wrong!i'm worried about the safety of toyota sienna van.
Vibration in rear brakes causing a harmonic noise when coming to a complete stop or if on a downward incline with brakes applied and just barely inching along. This is not the normal squeal from brake pads. I have been concerned that this vibration is causing other parts to become loose. I purchased the 2001 toyota sienna xle van new in sept 2000. All of my service is done according to toyota's schedule and at toyota of greensburg, pa. The noise started aprox. Feb of 2002 with 19,000 miles on the vehicle. It was reported to toyota of greensburg, pa on may 10th of 2002 with 22,166 miles. Between may and august of 2002 the van was taken to the dealer 4 times for this problem. During that time they replaced the linings and drums, cleaned the brakes or did something otherbut the noise always comes back. On august 5th 2002 toyota of greensburg told me that toyota was aware of the problem and working on a fix because it is happening on all sienna vans since 1998. Between then and april of 2003 i keep asking about the repair and the answer was it is not ready. At that point i went to toyota's arbitration process but they would not do anything since the van now had over 36,000 miles even though the problem started well within the warranty period. I feel there is a vibration problem (sometimes you can actually see the road wheel vibrating also) that could cause other more serious problems but do not know what else to do. As far as i know toyota has still not developed the repair.
Brakes have been acting up since purchased and have taken this vechicle in several times, the noise stops when i leave with the different things they havedone but it continues to come back. Being a new vechicle i am dissatisfied withit and have ask to be placed in a different vechicle but they refuse. I feel unsafe

I own a 2001 toyota sienna minivan with 76,400 miles. I have owned this vehicle since it was new purchased in late 2000.# . Anyhow, my wife was driving the car near our home on august 2, hit the brakes moderately hard to avoid striking a deer, and the right front brake disintegrated. It was replaced today by chippewa auto, located near here. They told me, and gave me the pieces, that the right front rotor broke loose from its mounting and broke in half, because of corrosion. Furthermore the left front rotor was in danger of doing the same, and was cracked loose for 2/3 of it circumference. I could supply you the pieces for both rotors, or i could send several digital photos by e-mail. This is unacceptable and should never have happened, especially from somebody like toyota and their vaunted quality program. Is there a recall on this? it cost me $235.48.paul garner
The brakes makenoise when ever i apply them. Ihave taken the vehicle to the dealership for repair a couple of times. First 2 times, they said need service. They did service to clean dust. Even after that, the sound did not go. They mentioned this is normal for all seinna's. They said the sound coming when metal pads hits metal rings, drum. I believe the sound is due to design fault or fault materials. I bought a brand new vehicle and only 20000 miles on it. They refused to replace any parts. They said there is no problem and every thing normal. I am disappointed in buying a brand new seinna xle (higher model) and paid around $30000. Please help me resolve the problem. I called toyata customer service. No help from them. They have 100 reasons to cover up any complaint.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. While applying pressure to the brakes, the contact heard a loud grinding noise coming from the abs motor. The brakes did not engage and the contact crashed into another vehicle. The contact did not inform the dealer or manufacturer of the failure nor was the vehicle repaired. The current and failure mileage was 120,000.
Toyota sienna brakes pedal goes down to the floor giving not enough braking to stop vehicle. The brake work has been done on this mini-van three times within last 2~3 years at toyota dealerships service center but the condition has not been improved. The dealership has worked on both front(disc brakes) and rear(drum brakes) including part replaced and repaired.brake cylinders at rear tires replaced.the front disc had been changed with brake shoes.rear brake rotor was machined and brake shoes have been replaced.none of the old parts are available with vehicle owner.
Consumer states that the failure of skid indicator lamp illuminated, dealer replaced the vehicle with a new one.

The brakes make a very loud squeaking noise.the dealer told the consumer to ride the brakes for a while until the rust came off.new brake pads were put on the vehicle on 6/5/2003.the noise still occurs.

Previously filed complaint od id #: 10033210 regarding rotors.i recently had them replaced under warranty because when braking hard to avoid an accident i heard metal to metal from front braking system and the car wasn't stopping.also had slight shimmy in steering upon regular braking.was told that rotors were within the specifications but since they could not turn/sand them again because they had been done once before and would be too thin and that they were "warped"they would replace them under warranty "this one time only." the first time they were turned and sanded - approximately 15,000 miles.this time they were replaced - 22,000 miles.this is not normal and i do not feel safe driving this car!*la
This van has rear brakes that squeal/hum everytime you use them.i have contacted toyota regional which contacted toyota national which sent someone out to look at them.in their words they said "brake noise is normal for a sienna".somehow any constant brake noise shouldn't be normal.i'm told it happens when the brake shoes and the backing plates vibrate at a low speed it causes them to hum.also, at 15,000 miles (i only put 10,000 per year on the car) the rotors had to be turned and sanded.1 week later the metal crunching sound returned.i returned the vehicle and was told everything was within the specifications.now, whenever i have to brake hard i still will hear a metal to metal crunching noise.unfortunately it isn't a constant problem and cannot always be duplicated so it still hasn't gotten fixed.i've basically given up on the vehicle and will turn it in at the end of the lease because i do not feel safe with these type of brake problems.
My brakes have been sqealing for some time now.i've had the rotors turned, dusted, etc. Now it is affecting my steering.i am due to take it in to have this checked out.
While driving at any speed and applying the brake the consumer heard a loud noise coming from the front wheels.the dealer determined that the drums were defective and needed to be replaced.*mr

Leased vehicle new in april 2001. To date, have had 11 brake replacements in a period of 21 months. Brakes squealing immediately after being replaced, sounds like a semi coming to stop. Filed under florida lemon law, which dealer said "could not duplicate concern-operating to design & intent". Brakes grind metal to metal after a short period of time. Vibration & uneven, premature tire wear despite several alignments. Vehicle also makes clunking sound when breaking in reverse & initial acceleration.

Car had been driven for 15 minutes, brakes worked, was parked for 30 minutes and upon pulling out of driveway realized brakes did not function.was able to brake the car with parking brake.no accident ensued, called tow truck and brought it to service center.was told that vacuum hose came unattached, so power assisted brakes were not working.

While driving at 25 mph there was a loud noise and the steering wheel seemed to disconnect from the column. Consumer was able to spin the steering wheel, andwheels would not move. Consumer had, for about ninety secondsno control of the vehicle. Manufacturer and the dealer have been notified of the problem.

The sliding doors of our 2001 toyota sienna xle are not reliable operated. Sometimes work sometime not, sometime stuck, no safety sensor. Only a man can push the closing door back open.if a child in the path of a closing door, manually pushing back the door is impossible for me. The push button and the key button sometimes work sometimes not since thefirst year.we brought in elmore toyota many times.they said nothing wrong with it.we complained to cooperate toyota, they referred us back to elmore toyota, with the same answer nothing wrong.we fear for the safety of our children.this is our last resort for help.when we have money to replace this car, there will be no more toyotaon our list.
Water leaks into front passenger and driver areas and settles and soaks on front carpet. It enters through the roof area or door seals. Happens when ever it rains.
My 2001 toyota sienna xle power sliding door on the passenger side (came only with this one power door) did not work properly. It did not open by pressing the button,it works to close but not tight.when i choose to use it manually, it is so heavy that the children have not enough strength to open it.they have to exit the car from the driver's side other than on the curb side.it places the passengers indangerous situation, as well as to the driver if he has to come out of the car to help open the door at the curb side. My complaint is that door should be operated as light as the other door when it is in the manual mode and the cost to fix is too much (about $2,000) to afford.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna.the contact stated that she noticed water on the floor of the front passenger side when it would rain.the dealer was unable to diagnose the failure.the current and failure mileages were 94,000.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. While the vehicle was being serviced, the contact was informed that the spare tire was missing. The contact referenced recall 10v160000 (structure) and was informed that the parts were backordered. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 141,000 and the current mileage was approximately 150,000.
Sunvisor swings left to right upon turns.hits driver in the head.when positioned to the side window, it swings to the right.when positioned at front must be hooked or hits driver in head.when driving toward sun must hold visor in position, side window orwindshield.causes driver distraction and safety problems.

Sunvisor swings freely and strikes driver in head when turning corner.appears to be caused by hot weather.sunvisor was replaced by toyota, but still causes same problem.
When making turnsdriver sunvisor swings out and hits consumer on the head. Vehicle has been taken to dealer 3 times,no remedy available.
The contact owns 2001 toyota sienna. The contact stated that the running board on the driver side fractured and collapsed after he stepped onto it to enter the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the running board was rusted underneath and would need replacing. In addition, the dealer advised that the running boards were no longer being manufactured by the original manufacturer. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 101,000.

The driver's side rear sliding door has several times now refused to latch, and whenin emergency situation i have locked it and forced it to shut then it will not unlock and it has to be taken apart to be opened and the whole latch and lock mechanism reworked by the mechanic, and in the meantime the door is unable to be opened which is extremely unsafe when i have children in the middle and back rows of the van.this is the third time in the past 3 years that this problem has occurred, so it is definitely an actual problem with the hardware of the door latch mechanism itself and not simply a glitch that occurred once or something.
Both driver and passenger sliding doors will not open from the inside. The child locks are not on, and occasionally the doors will not latch closed. After fidgeting with the lock and latch, it will eventually latch.
It takes considerable amount of weight to have rebound feature for power sliding door to operate. Consumer feels this feature is useless as a safety feature.
I purchased a brand new 2001 toyota sienna xle in 2001. The passenger side power sliding door has given us problem since we purchased the car. We had it back to the dealer for the same power door issue at least 11 times. They now want to charge me. The ntsb should force a recall to fix this issue. The door will not open or close and now it will not move at all either by remote or manually.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna.the contact stated that the passenger side sliding door stopped working.the door does not open all the way with the remote control or manually.the contact has to find a way to open the door when this occurs, which is usually in rainy or snowy conditions.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that it would cost $2,200 to replace the motor and the computer.the failure mileage was 110,000.
Automatic sliding doors w/o reversing senors are a serious injury risk.
When child lock is on the power door on passeger side can be opened by a 4 year old.
After purchasing a new sienna in march my driver side power sliding door failed in may.the driver side power door ecu was replaced. 10 days later the door failed again, this time the door was adjusted and reinitialized.as i tested the door at time of pickup the door failed again.the rear latch pin switch was replaced and the door was reinitialized.the door worked fine until failure july 31st.some adjustments were made and the door was reinitialized, at time of pickup august 5th the door failed again.a field tech from toyota found loose pins in the door and the main battery power level was low.the pins were fixed and the alternator belt was replaced with a heavier one to increase the main battery power. Hopefully this will solve the problem as i fear door malfunction with my children's safety my main concern!
Passenger sliding door would not close/open electronically or manually.the button to turn off the electronic open/close did not work. Toyota service could not fix.had them cut cable so can close and open door manually.until the cable was cut, door could not be used to exit van.
The power sliding door on our 2001 toyota sienna minivan quit working.after a morning of research on the internet i feel compelled to complain as this is evidently a recurring problem.it can be opened manually with moderate effort.
Dear sirs, i want toyota to buy back my sienna van. I have had my van repaired 4 time for a inoperative power sliding door, erratic operating power sliding door, unintentional activation power sliding door. The door is now broke again. After they fix the door this will be the 5th repair to the door. The door now opened one time while driving the car at slow speed. This is not safe!
Hild safety locks on rear sliding doors are bypassed and rendered useless by rear power door buttons.with the child safety locks engaged the sliding doors can not be opened manually from the inside.however the rear power door buttons located on the rear doors, on the front console, and on the remote all function normally.there is a separate button on the front console that deactivates the power door function, but it deactivates it from all 3 points (buttons on the rear doors, on the front console, and on the remote) rendering the expensive power door feature useless.to comply with the child safety lock requirement, when the child safety lock is engaged it should disable manual opening of the door by backseat occupants and should disable the power door buttons located on the back doors within easy reach of backseat occupants.manufacturer was contacted, but has failed to followup or offer any solution (toyota case # 2003 1204 0595). Power doors close too hard and pose serious injury risk to children.power doors close hard enough to easily hurt an adult.my two year old son was injured when he activated the power door button located in the back seat and managed to close the door on his arm.multiple dealers have informed me that the power doors are not adjustable and therefore cannot be changed.manufacturer was contacted, but has failed to followup or offer any solution (toyota case # 2003 1204 0595). Tire pressue monitoring system malfunctions.it fails to warn of low pressure in tires (tested to 15 lbs below appropriate tire pressure on each tire individually and then on all 4 tires simultaneously).however, the warning light does come on when descending from high altitudes in spite of all tires being inflated properly.multiple dealers have been unable to understand and fix the problem.manufacturer was contacted (toyota case #2004 0109 0681).
The power sliding door system is dangerous with small children.the door takes incredible resistence before the reversing system will kick in and stop the door from closing.the system appears to be designed mainly to protect the door motors from damage, not to protect people from injury.infact, the owner's manual specifically says to turn the power door system off when small children are present, yet this vehicle and these features are marketed to families with small children.also the child lock-protection system does not work when the power door system is turned on. The resistance required to stop the power door isvery substantial.any body part, even an arm or leg of an adult that got caught in the door could suffer serious injury.the doors are very difficult to open and close when the power system is turned off. The dealer and sales person knew i had two small children.they showed me how wonderful the power door system was when you had your hands full carrying a child.they told me it had a safety system so that people wouldn't get hurt if they were in the path of the closing door. Unfortunately, i did not get to fully test the power doors and read the owner's manual in detail within the first 3 days after accepting delivery.when i triedto get them to repurchase the vehicle after two weeks and less than 1000 miles, even at a price less than my purchase price, they refused to even consider it.these doors are dangerous.the power doors of other minivan manufacturers require very little resistance to invoke the protection system, and severalinclude other safety features like optical eyes.toyota should be required to redesign and then recall/replace this power door system.
Vehicle shut off without prior warning.battery/ alarm system/ key, and starter were checked.
2005 toyota sienna driver side door made a loud pop when opening. Customer stated she took it to the dealer and they told her it would cost 300 to 400 dollars. Consumer would like to know how many sienna's have this problem.the dealer informed the consumer, that the weld on the door hinge was broken. The consumer took the vehicle to a collision center and was told the price would be $250.00 dollars. The dealer did agree to pay half of the cost.
The contact owns a 2001 toyota sienna. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 mph, the hood was shaking violently and unlatched from the vehicle causing the windshield to crack. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the failure was undetermined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

I have a significant safety issue that does not fit the ordinary type of complaint.i believe that the tire industry is putting thousands of drivers at risk in winter driving because of policies that ignore normal driving conditions.because of test on vehicles that are skidding out of control they are making policies that put the driver at risk when driving in snow.they recommend that two tires with greater tread always be installed on the rear wheels. Skids are a result of driving too fast.however if you cannot move the car their recommendation is of absolutely no value.if you have a front wheel drive vehicle in deep snow and cannot get enough traction you cannot move.if you are driving and a snow plow make a pile in your path it may stop your can and you may get hit in the backend.if you have a steep hill and can't get up you are a big hazard for all traffic behind you.i try to drive with my front wheels in mind and to avoid at all cost losing traction.also if you have abs brakes they minimize the effects of rear wheel skids.

The spare tire mechanism broke on my 2001 toyota sienna minivan. Thankfully i was trying to remove the spare when it happened and the spare tire did not go flying into traffic. The cable broke at the end where the cable goes through the metal holder/bracket that actually clamps to the wheel. If this had broken off when the van was moving, either the van would have been damaged by the spare getting caught between the road and the van or the spare may have hit another car. This is maybe the second time that we have had the spare off in the 258k miles we have owned the car so it is not something that we inspect regularly. There are a lot of these vans out there and i really don't want to be behind one when the spare lets go.the dealership claimed that my van did not have a recall on this item.
Tread separated on firestone tire in a similar manner to ford explorer recalled tires.took tire to toyota dealer who initially advised me to take tire to a firestone service center.later toyota service department asserted that tread separated because vehicle was driven while tire was not properly inflated.toyota dealer offered to replace tires however.i still have separated tire and i will take photographs.i intend to keep separated tire in my possession.approximately 20 minutes prior to tread separation, i put air in tires.i drove on the interstate and about 2 miles off of the interstate is where the tread separated.it is my understanding that this particular tire in not currently part of the firestone recall but i would like your agency to note this report of the problem that i experienced with the affinity tire. I am file a complaint about my 2001 toyota sienna xle with dual power sliding door.the power malfunctioned with only 60000 miles on it.now i know many people complained about the this quality and safey issue.i turned it into manual door.it is a safety concern.
The horn on the sienna works intermittently. This is a very unsafe situation when driving as a horn could possibly prevent an accident with a car or pedestrian.first had the problem in 2014, but when we brought it to toyota, it would work, so they couldn't check it out. In april 2015, they finally thought it was a defective spiral cable, so they replaced it, to the tune of $400+. Three days later, we had the problem again. Weren't able to bring it back until recently. Replaced spiral cable again. Problem returned before the car made it home. Vehicle is back in shop.i believe they said they are replacing the horn pad assembly, which will cost another $150 for the part. They are not charging for labor as it is under a 1 year service warranty.found out today a coworker has a similar problem with a 2005 sienna. I googled, "problems with sienna horn" and found many people with the same problem. Why has there not been a recall as this is clearly a safety issue. I feel that maybe there has not been any serious accidents attributed to this problem and so it's "flown under the radar", so to speak.
Vehicle shut off without prior warning.battery/ alarm system/ key, and starter were checked.
I was entering the parking area of a shopping center.immediately after turning in the car accelerated quickly.i braked to no avail.then i put on the foot emergency brake, which slowed but did not stop the car.a passenger then turned off the key and we lurched to an abrupt stop, short of a typical parking lot light pole.after a brief time i turned on the key and was met with a very loud growl from the hood.aaa hauled me to joseph airport toyota in vandalia, oh.on tues, aug 11, i called to see what they had found.they told me that they had found nothing wrong with the car after testing and driving the car.i asked to talk with the mechanic, who told me he had tested everything thoroughly and could not replicate what i had experienced.
I had just dropped my youngest daughter off at school and as i was leaving i had to stop because some children with their parents needed to cross in front of me i applied my brakes as normal and i had no issues in stopping but then it feels like a "ghost" pushes the gas pedal down because i can feel it move and see my rpm gauge go up and i hear my engine "vrrrrooommmm" i pushed my brakes harder and still nothing, the end results me having to put my car into park to keep it from moving into the crosswalk onto the people. When i get home it does the same thing and i almost crash into my garage because the car is accelerating on its own and again. It would always happen at random, after i would let go of the brakes its already moving fast as if my foot is on the gas, i say to my passenger which is my wife "look the van is going on it's own, i'm not even pushing the gas" the van was moving pretty fast, but fast enough for the flow of traffic from a stop and go movement. I no longer drive the van because i am scared that i am going to get into an accident and i don't want that to happen. No check engine light is on i even had the van checked for codes and nothing came up.
I was driving a 2001 toyota sienna. I turned left into a parking space and pulled forward. While still in drive, rather than stopping, the car continued to accelerate slowly, ran over a wooden parking barrier, and crashed into a concrete wall a few feet away.
Vehicle surged backwards at high speed when backing out of a parking space.*mr
Our 2001 toyota sienna has been experiencing gas pedal problems for the last two years. From a stopped position, the gas pedal sticks until excessive pressure is applied. When the accelerator finally engages, the car lurches forward. This problem makes the vehicle frightening to drive.the first time we brought the car to the toyota service department (toyota of santa maria, california) about this issue was february 2008 (odometer 101,112). The service department told us they could not duplicate the problem but serviced the throttle body and lubricated the exposed throttle cables. The gas pedal responded better. In november 2009 we started experiencing the problem again and on december 10, 2009 we took the vehicle into the service department (odometer 111,596). We requested a similar service to see if it would fix the problem but the service department claimed to not know what they had done on the previous visit to 'fix' the sticky gas pedal. They could not duplicate the problem and we took the vehicle home. Within the same day the accelerator was sticking. We felt unsafe driving our two small children in the vehicle and parked it in the garage for a month until we could take it back to the service department.on january 11, 2010 we brought it back and insisted they fix the problem. They could not duplicate the problem. We were assured that there was nothing unusual with our vehicle, perhaps just some carbon build up on the throttle body plate. We didn't feel safe driving the vehicle home and left it at the service department where it has remained to this day. On january 21, 2010, toyota announced a recall due to a sticking gas pedal that, in part, describes our issue. Our 2001 sienna is not included in this recall.
2001 toyota minivan unpredicted accelerated while driving on highway.pulled off to exit ramp and did again so had car towed.
5 months ago my son was driving my car and it suddenly accelerated and he could not get the car to stop even when he put on the brake.when i got the car, i started the engine and it lunged forward, but i put the car in neutral and the engine just raced.i ultimately took the car to my mechanic and he took it somewhere else were they repaired the problem after two attempts.my car did not have any driver side floor mats in it.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of this complaint.my wife and children were nearly involved in a serious accident yesterday due to sudden uncontrolled acceleration in our minivan.before you even consider that it may be drivers error, as evidenced by the myriad of discussion on this matter on the internet, the problem was confirmed by the tow truck driver and me; the van currently is stuck in full acceleration upon starting---i tested this numerous times yesterday and today.there is no obstruction to the throttle cable, pedal, nor a floor mat issue.i have clearly checked these items.there are numerous similar complaints online but apparently they have not been acknowledged/addressed by toyota or nhtsa.thanks.
Left our home about 1045a.put van into "drive" after pulling out of driveway in reverse. Unable to stopwith the brakes at stop sign, approx 0.1 miles from start. Car began to accelerate on it's own, through the stop sign, through a right hand turn, through a left hand turn. Accelerator pedal was "stuck" and could not get it loose. Brakes had no effect, including attemptsat emergency brake use. Went up a hill hoping to slow the van, but van increased acceleration. Tree was hit with center of front bumper. Air bags did not deploy. Engine continued to "rev" after impact. Exited vehicle. Right front tire exploded, severely damaging right front quarter panel area/components.
The cruise control lever is located in an area that when the driver turned the steering wheel the cruise control is engaged and , resulted insudden acceleration.the consumer indicated the problem occurred on a consistent basis.

2001 sienna toyotaonce passenger side window comes down, it will only go up by an inch at a time when hit the up button. It will take more than an hour to close it completely.
Side power window has a automatic feature which allows the window to go up or down with a single touch of the button on the door.a child can inadvertenly hit the button and could become trapped by the window goint up.the force of the window can sufficiently crush a child.

Passenger front power window motor assembly failure causing inability of window to go up.
When driving on highway i-87 our moonroof in our minivan started to blow off.luckily my husband was in the passenger seat and could hold the glass while i pull off.we immediately called toyota of clifton park to tell them and took it there the following morning.they gave us two options, one full replacement at a cost of approx 1,340 + tax or to have them attempt to replace the glue and we would have to let it "cure" for a few days.we didn't drive it for approx 8 days and two days after driving it, it flew off again, this time i was alone an couldn't grab it and it blew out and hit another vehicle causing property damage to that car. We told toyota originally that it had to be a manufacturing defect, you don't drive around and expect the windows to blow out of your car.they said because we were over our 50000 miles they wouldn't be responsible.nowin addition to them not taking responsibility fora defective moonroof, they also gave us bad advise on fixing it.they told us only one very expensive option and then one very cheap.nothing in between was offered and after talking to our insurance adjuster, there was many other ways to fix the vehicle (only replace the glass, get one from a junk yard etc) but they didn't offer those less expensive repairs so of course we tried the glue.after metlife sent an engineer from an independent company did we find out they used an appoxy that isn't meant for fixing sunroof's or cars.
Sunroof ripped off drivers side of car after it was opened on highway.sunroof remained attached on passenger sidecausing broken glass to shower into car and providing unsafe driving conditions at 75mph.toyota refuses to acknowledge it is a factory defect even when one of their dealers has evidence that sunroof glass was never properly adhered to sunroof mounting brackets.
Right hand side of windshieldisdistorted. This causespoor visibility. Windshield was deformed but the manufacturer declined to replace it.
The original equipment aluminum alloy wheel rims on my toyota sienna minivan show fatigue breaks.when i asked a tire shop to rotate the tires, they noticed that one of the rims was so bad that they refused to put the wheel back on the car.the crack in this one was very visible and was slightly visible in another.i have replaced all four rims, but i kept the worst one and have taken photos that clearly show that one of the spokes is broken over most of the width of the spoke.the crack is visible from the front and back of the rim.i would like to forward these digital photos, if you will provide an email address.
