The throttle stuck on the car. I could not stop the car and it went over a 10 foot fall and crashed to the ground. It was a very scary ride. I tried every way to stop the car but could not . I had my foot on the brake the entire time of the unintended event. I am still very sore three weeks later and have some spinal sprain and wrist sprain, cervical sprain and both knees bruised both knees. The car was taken to a collision center for repairs after i consulted my insurance company....updated 06-16-15 updated 10/2/2017

The contact owned a 2013 toyota rav4. While driving approximately 10 mph on a road without sidewalks, a bicyclist made a sudden right turn and ended up too far in the roadway. The bicyclist also had a dog on a leash. To avoid hitting the pedestrian and dog, the contact suddenly sped up to approximately 20 mph and steered to the right. Due to the layout of the road, the contact's vehicle ended up in a creek off the road nearby. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed and totaled. A police report was filed. The contact sustained a concussion as well as injuries to the head, arms, and chest. Medical attention was needed. The contact stated that the vehicle received severe damage to the front end and interior due to the water that entered the vehicle. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer and was waiting for an official damage report from the insurance company. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that they would not be able to do anything until it was determined if the sensors were hit at the time of the crash. The failure mileage was unknown.

My wife got into an accident with her 2013 rav4 with only 14k miles in which she was t-boned. Both the passenger doors and quarter panels was effected by the accident. The vehicle almost flip to one side but didn't and the rear passenger side suspension fail apart. None of the air bags in the car deployed, the vehicle will most likely be totaled by the insurance company due to frame damage on the entire passenger side and absolutely no air bags deployed. I believe the their is a bigger problem that cause the side impact air bags not to be deployed. I'm so happy my new born and 18 month old was not in the vehicle during that time.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav 4. The contact stated that the driver was traveling an unknown speed and crashed into a bear. The air bags deployed but did not deflate after deployment, making it extremely difficult for the driver to immediately exit the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the incident. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 80,000.

While driving down a bridge at approximate speed of 36 and before the red light i left my right leg from the gas pedal and pressed on the brake pedal to get ready to stop by the red light . At that moment the brake pedal did not respond to my leg pressing and the total braking system did not respond having cars stopped infront of me by the red light i had to turn the steering wheel to the right and hit a big tree. The damage reached almost to the middle of the front hood; however, no any air bag was deployed or activated due to the crash and i was transferred to the hospital by the ambulance and been hospitalized for seven days and for the first four days i lost any sensation in my both legs with a sever spine pain and until now my both legs hurt me and so does my back ( spine ). Pictures are available. The car still under the manufacturer warranty and all the services were connected by the toyota dealership service. The last was conducted at the dealership on sep 15, 2014 at 13:25 - 14:39. I have always taken the car to the dealer's service exactly as the dealer recommended.....updated 01/23/15 ..........updated 12/15/15updated 9/15/2017

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact was driving approximately 42 mph and crashed into a large animal. The air bags failed to deploy. The driver sustained bruises to the body and a police report was filed of the incident. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and was later inspected by the manufacturer thirty days later, who determined that there was no defect in the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 8,500. The vin was unavailable.

The toyota was traveling 35 mph north bound and a mercedes made a left hand turn in front of thetoyota. The toyota t-bone the mercedes at 35 mph and the air bags on the toyota did not deploy. Thedriver and passenger in the toyota suffered several injuries to the neck, back, hands, leg and feet andwas transported to the hospital for treatment. The toyota was totaled by the insurance carrier.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. While the contact's spouse was driving 20 mph through an intersection, she struck an oncoming vehicle head on. The air bags failed to deploy. There were no warning indicators illuminated prior to the crash. An ambulance arrived at the scene, but there were no injuries or medical attention required. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop where it was awaiting inspection. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

This was a front end collision. The other party spun into our lane (local road) and destroyed our front end. Air bags did not appear to cause the injury (front passenger had a broken rib on the left side and a possible separated sternum). The air bags seem to have deployed properly but did not deflate after the initial impact. This made it difficult to get to the injured person (front passenger). Also, one of the air bags released its chemical into the face of the injured person causing them a lot of difficulty in breathing. The driver suffered no injuries.

After reading several news stories today (04/09/14) about the recall of 27 toyota models (including 2013 rav 4), for: ?cables for the driver air bag module that can be damaged, disabling the bag, though a warning light will come on (3.5 million vehicles, 1.67 million in the u.s.).?seats that don't lock in place (2.32 million, 670,000 in north america)?steering column brackets that may become loose or fail (760,000, europe and asia only)?windshield wiper motor (160,000, asia only)?starter motor fire hazard (20,000, asia only)i called the dealer where i bought my car - toyota of rock hill. I was informed that recalls are "coming," but they didn't have specific information from toyota yet. I should be getting a letter in the mail and then i take the car in for service. Frustrating to see that the media has more information on the actual recalls than the toyota dealer. So, if something happens between now and the time i get "my letter," (my air bags fail or the seats become dislodged during an accident), i'm pretty much screwed.

When making a legal u-turn on a busy road i rapidly braked the car (from 45mph to 2-3mph) to a partial stop rolling through the intersection while turning the wheels to a hard left. I pressed on the accelerator expecting to accelerate out of the u-turn and instead the car hesitated and slowed feeling like there was a momentary loss of power to the wheels. I pressed harder on the accelerator with no immediate effect in acceleration. Approximately 2-3 seconds passed as oncoming traffic approached in the lane i was drifting into when suddenly all acceleration resumed normally. This incident occurred just once. Eco mode was turned on and my rav4 is an awd model. I consider it to be a reportable incident since the hesitation was not expected and increased the probability of collision with traffic in the driving lane i was turning into.

Mechanism that allows doors to lock and unlock started failing one by one. I am the first owner of my car and it was only 3 years old when this began. I can no longer open several doors from the inside. I have taken it to the dealership and apparently this is a known issue.

Indicates a malfunction in the ev system.high battery tempshow malfunction on evsystem whileon road and sudden power loss may be create deadly accident.while charging it show malfunction in ev system.

Car won't start. Panel turns on but it won't engage the starter. Can hear a buzz noise, like a magnetized coil going off. Shifter is locked. Steering wheel is locked. Brake impossible to push down. Only way i can start the car is with the emergency procedure pushing the start button for 15 seconds. But still the shifter is blocked in parking and to be able to drive the car i need to use the little switch under the button size cover next to the shifter. Toyota has no clue what is going on. Vehicle has 45k miles

Purchased new 2013 rav4 on 23 mar 13.the entune navigation display (both day and night mode) is very difficult to see in bright daylight (in day mode) or at night time (in night mode).this is a serious distraction when using the navigation and results in the driver having to avert eyes to focus on the display longer than necessary for details.this could result in an accident.a normal display would not have these issues. I have examined another brand new rav4 with the same issue.the dealer also replaced my entune system; the problem still persists.it is a design flaw.please prevail upon toyota to fix this with either a hardware or software update.

It is nearly impossible to see the navigation screen from the normal driving position in the sunlight due to glare.this causes the driver to take his eyes off the road for an extended time.this is unsafe and could cause and accident.toyota service claims the system is operating as designed.

At any speed in any weather it is impossible to see the navigation system in this vehicle...this needs addressed by the manufacture as is a paid for upgrade and due to people working to see the system accidents are going to happen.

I was driving on a local road. As i turned into the parking lot of a store, the vehicle shut off and smoke and fumes began to fill the cabin. I pulled to the side, got out of the car, and raised the hood. There was a fire in the area of the battery. A person nearby noticed the fire and came to put it out before the entire vehicle was engulfed. Local police and fire also responded.

I saw article in usa today. Exact same thing was happening to my rav4 a month ago. I brought back to dealer and they changed the battery- but i paid for it.

Vehicle hesitated when shifting into gear. No power and then a surge causing the car to jerk. Happens when accelerating from stop into first and second gear. The ecm is defective and toyota was forced to address this after class action suit see rav4ecmsettlement.com, although this resulted in an extended warranty rather than a recall. My car is 4 months passed the 10 year warranty although it has low mileage. The faulty ecm can cause the transmission to fail. This is a dangerous and unfair situation for thousands of owners.toyota did not notify me of this issue.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the door locks were inoperable. The contact stated that the locks were unable to be locked or unlocked from inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an unknown dealer and the contact was provided an estimate of $1,800 for the repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 59,000.

Engine control module wiring is exposed to elements. This is a crucial part and in climates where salt is used, loss of control due to failed stability control or engine problems could result. See photos and description of the problem at http://www.yobyot.com/cars/why-toyota-is-losing-its-reputation-for-quality-and-reliability/2013/11/10/ .

When driving at any speed, under any condition, it is impossible to see the navigation screen, causing the driver to look, rather than glance, at the screen to determine driving instructions, road hazards, warnings, etc. The glare is almost blinding at times.

On local road, accelerating from stop.vehicle suddenly "shut-off" going into neutral and unable to put back into drive.steering went "limp".vehicle drifted right, power steering was effected, steering difficult.vehicle coasted into parking lot to the right, fortunately no vehicles happened to be passing on the right at that precise moment, therefore no accidents.but there could have easily been one.attempts at restarting vehicle resulted in "take ev to nearest dealership" message and several warning indicators on dash.vehicle was towed to originating dealership which it continues to be diagnosed and unresolved.vehicle was purchased on 9/3/2013 < 6 days prior.

The installed navigation screen is impossible to see in the driver's normal driving position and in almost any daytime lighting condition.glare from the screen and dashboardborders on unsafe. There is no way to safely use that item and the 12 or so functions located there without significant distraction.notified the service manager 2 times and both times was told they were not aware of the problem.because of the potential distraction this will cause accidents and some will be fatal.

I bought a new 2013 rav 4 with toyota navigation. On any sunny day it is impossible to read the map due to the glare. I plan on complaining to the dealership this week.

While stopped at a traffic light with the transmission in drive, the engine shut off without warning, and the steering wheel locked.the radio and headlights remained on.this the second occurrence within 6 weeks.

The navigation screen is totally unusable in daylight.screen is flat and exposed to sun.driver has to leanover and hold right hand over the screen to get any visibility at all.even then you can barely see it, not to mention the danger of leaning over, using the right hand to screen, and staring at the screen rather than the road. Terrible terrible design. Toyota will not address the problem. $1500 mistake for anyone who purchased this add-on.you have to completely rely on the voice for navigation.

Squirrels crawled into the hood and chewed the battery cable wire and turn signal wire, this happened 2 days in a row after repairs were done the first time. The soy based coating of the wires is attracting a swarm of squirrels.

2013 rav4 limited w/ 63,000 miles.vehicle equipment with smart key push button start. For two years this vehicle has had a intermittent ignition failure. Scenario: car is unlocked, key fob is recognized, foot on brake, push start and nothing happens.the anti-theft column lock will not release and the car will not respond to its start command.then it will.there is no consistent pattern to when it will fail or when it will "fix" itself. Recently it has reached a level of failure that its too risky to take any place and expect to start and get home safely. The car has been in and out of dealer service 12 plus days in the last 30.dealer has experienced the issue and has done extensive diagnosis, conclusion is, its normal.i purchased the extended warranty in 2013 and what toyota has proven is they are unwilling or unable to repair.i now resort to disconnecting the battery before putting car in park or closing the doors so the anti theft won't lock. Doors and steering wheel won't lock so when i reconnect the battery it will start.it however runs really badly until it recalibrates.a related concern of mine is this intermittent unlock problem may suddenly lock while driving. I have reported this to toyota corporate and have a claim.i have reported to local attorney general claiming violation of service contract. I have read on line other toyota owners have experienced this but i've not read of a solution. I service records, emails and related claims documents. This first occurred in 2017 and has grown from an annoyance to unacceptable.thank you

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. While driving approximately 2 mph and slowing down to park, the vehicle accelerated. The maintenance required and horseshoe warning indicators illuminated. The contact quickly cut off the engine to stop the vehicle. While driving approximately 60 mph on the highway, the failure recurred. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure recurred twice. The contact also stated that the key intermittently did not unlock the doors. The failures were not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

Both power locks for the driver and passenger side have stopped working.the fuses are fine.it seems it's an actuator issue common with toyotas.

I am entering a safety complaint regarding the headlights on my toyota 2013 rav4. Today, i went to my local car repairman to fix a headlight that blew out. This is the 3rd time in 6 months. In september, we had to completely change both headlights because parts in the headlights were melting. Yet, less than 6 months later, my passenger headlight blew out and needed to be replaced. There is something systematically wrong with my headlights. According to my car mechanic, it looks like they are going to continue to burn out. This creates hazardous driving conditions for me and my passengers.

The "power brake actuator" went out on my 2013 toyota rav-4 three times while i was driving the vehicle. Every time this happened, all of the warning lights on the dash board would come on. At the same time all of the gauges including the speedometer, the vehicle stability control, anti lock brakes, traction control system and power steering would all stop working on the vehicle. This would make it almost impossible to stop or control the vehicle what so ever.

The engine started on fire under normal driving conditions.the car was not involved in any accident.the rav4 limited was totaled.it was less than 3 years old and had 17,500 miles on it.the car was serviced regularly by toyota.the last service was about 4 months prior to the fire.toyota has not honored their 3yr/36,000 mile warranty coverage on the car.toyota has not offered a replacement car, rental or anything.every time we call our toyota case manager or legal department managers, we have to leave a message and they never return our calls.

While i was driving, the car's electric system started rebooting itself a few times, and the car eventually stalled on a busy street! the power was completely shutdown and i couldn't even turn the flash light on. I had to have police officer come to the location where the car stopped to protect other drivers (until a towing track arrived). This incident appended on 4/24/12 on eastbound carmel valley road right before the intersection with el camino real. I had a similar issue with the electric system two months prior, and had a toyota dealer look at the issue. However, they couldn't identify the root cause and simply updated the system software. As of today, 4/25/14, the car is still at a toyota dealer and being repaired.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds during the day, she was unable to see the navigation screen due to an intense glare, even on cloudy days. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 6 and the current mileage was 1,000.updated 6/4/13 updated 06/13/2013

Bought new rav4 toyota 2013 last month with navigation. Screen barely visible.dealer notified toyotafield representative who does not know to repair.dealer say it is indeed a problem and could cause accidents.i also have a 2012 toyota highlander which has a perfectly clear screentoyota telephoned mebut not encouraging.

2 separate episodes of unintended acceleration in a brand new cardealer unable to verify defect.

The front doors have problems when you want to open or close them with the key ring. Both front doors damaged the what they call the actuator a week apart and when i try to open the driver's door from the inside to get out the car it is closed and i can't open it i have to be hit the lock/unlock button until it lets me remove the lock to get off the car; this issue in particular worries me because in case of an accident i won't be able to open the door fast. Another problem that has is that every 3 months, the bulbs light for stop on the right side has to be change because it damage and i have to be changing it.this has been appening sing around december 2015.

Drove the car 8 blocks on city street to the filling station, while turning into the filling station from access road the car shut off and the dash went completely black just short of fuel pump.stopped thecar and restarted, drove 50 ft. To fuel pump.shut car off to fill with gas. Went into station to pre-pay for fuel.returned to the car, filled with fuel and tried to start.when trying to start the car it was completely black, no electronics at all, called my wife to get a tow truck to have it removed from the gas station, then went in to station to tell attendant the situation.while exiting the store i noticed sparks and glowing embers dropping to the ground from inside the left front wheel area. Iturned back and asked the station attendant for a fire extinguisher, returned to car, with 5 lb extinguisher, hood would not release so sprayed extinguisher up under wheel, around hood cracks, and by this time the head light had a hole where the flames were shooting out, so sprayed fire repellent into the hole.after about 10 sec extinguisher was empty.told gas station attendant to call fire department as the vehicle was going up in flames.approximately 5 minutes later the fire department arrived to extinguish the flames.

In may, 2017 the front passenger door lock actuator quit working. I paid over $600 to have it fixed. This week, the front driver's side actuator has quit. On both doors, they will only lock if i manually push the lock. We have had many cars over the years and have never had this problem. I do some research online and find out it's a common problem with toyota. Not happy! i can upload a picture of the invoice from the first lock if you need it, but that's all i have.

The installed navigation screen is impossible to see in the driver's normal driving position and in almost any daytime lighting condition. Bought a new toyota rav 4 limited july 2013 with navigation. Ambient glare through the vehicle windows and/or sun roof wash out the display, this is definitely a distraction while driving and trying to view the screen when it is in navigation mode, borders firmly as unsafe. There is no way to safely use that item and its functions located there without significant distraction. My 2011 toyota rav 4 limited with navigation did not present this problem.

Manufacturer: toyota motor corporationvehicle identification no. (vin): xxxxxxx.bought a toyota certified at dealership, (push button) however in six occasions, car engine would not turn on.indicator light for steering was on.after several tries, and once i pulled the steering hard then car started fine.took car to dealer to check it, they said nothing was wrong with car. The last time, the car did not start even with the toyota road assistance staff/towing, was unable to get it out of garage, area was too low.ended up leaving car at garage overnight.next day, i returned the car, did a trade in for new toyota. However, dealer or toyota co. Did not admit problems with car.battery was functioning fine as everything else would turn on, ie, radio, ac ..fan, lights.

When driving at any speed, under any condition, it is impossible to see the navigation screen, causing the driver to look, rather than glance, at the screen to determine driving instructions, road hazards, warnings, etc. The glare is almost blinding at times.

Car started actin g up on may 4th. Didn't want start right away it stated after 4 5 tires after 3 days of that i took the car to local dealer they told me battery was low and they charged it. I brought this car brand new it has only 14 mile and i brought in march 31 2014. This problem started again yesterday ( 05/18/2014).

After not having used the car for a while, i decided to see if things were good. I couldn't turn the car at all, so i decided to jump start it. The car turned on but there was a warning saying "problem with ev system, take to dealership". On my way to the dealership, i felt the acceleration of the car had been reduced significantly. When i arrive at the dealership, they say leave your car here and we take a look at it. I left it there and start to head back home. As i am going back, the dealership contacts me and says "we can't work on this car because we don't have anyone who is experienced with this. Come back and pick it up." so i head back to the dealership. On the phone, i made sure they knew it was a fully electric car and they said we would take a look at it. Anyways, as i am driving back home, the acceleration is still very poor. It takes 30 seconds to go from 0 to 40mph. I get a different warning saying "battery overheated, limiting energy supply". There also is this nasty rotten egg type smell as well. I am kind of scared now because battery powered car have been known to catch on fire. So far no one has been able to help me with this issue.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that when the sun would shine on the dashboard, it would produce a blinding glare that caused the information panel and the navigational system to become unreadable. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 320.

The instruments (speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge) of the car do not light up if the headlights are off. This can be dangerous when driving under underpasses or in the shadow of trees, etc., since one unexpectedly cannot see the speedometer or tachometer under those conditions.

I have a 2013 toyota rav4 limited.in any significant ambient light level, the navigationscreen is not visible.the glare on the screen ishorrific.notified dealership.they checked it out and confirmedthat i did, indeed, have a problem.dealership made an appointment with me to meet witha factory rep.i met with the rep, and he agreed this isa real problem, however he had no immediate solution.i contacted the toyota "hotline" and they referred meback to the dealership.this is a very dangerous situation, trying to position myhead so that i can try to get a clear view of the screen.(whichis still not possible)i feel like i have spent in excess of one thousand dollars for an option that is unusable.please help!toyota does not seem to be listening to me.

While driving, the vehicle started to shut off while driving with all lights coming on on the dash board. It cuts on when you put car back in park then turn the key, but still turns off again when you take it past a certain speed or when stopping to hard.

The 2013 toyota rav4 has no dash lights around the speedometer in the daytime.the speedometer sits back in the dash and you can not see your speed at a glance.therefore you can find yourself going faster than the safe speed limit.at night it lights up and is fine.this is a safety issue.

2013 toyota rav 4.consumer writes in regards to dashboard speedometer design flaw.the consumer stated the dashboard speedometer was set back into a tunnel that did not illuminate when the ignition was turned on. While driving during the daylight hours, the consumer was forced to turn on the night driving light in order to see the speedometer.

2013 toyota rav 4.consumer writes in regards to a defect in the instrument panel lighting.the consumer stated he was unable to see the instrument panel during daylight hours.the dealer informed the consumer the display panel back light only illuminated when the headlights were on. Even if the headlights were turned on during the day, the instrument panel was only marginally illuminated and the brightness control thumbwheel had very little effect.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the instrument cluster failed several times and all the gauges and warning lamps flickered. The dealer was notified of the failure and the vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v143000 (air bags) and stated that the part was not available for several months. The dealer did not give a specific date for when the part would become available. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 8,000.

Navigation screen difficult to see in most lighting conditions.must take more than brief glance at nav screen to determine freeway markings, intersections, street names or search for radio station.has possibility for becoming great distraction.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the battery failed. As a result, the door failed to unlock when using either the key fob or doing so manually. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 20,005.

Takata recallwhile driving, the vehicle tends to suddenly give off a "jerking" sound. When this happens, the vehicle tend to jiggle or shake then goes back to normal. This has become frightening, especially when driving on the highway. This usually happens while the vehicle is in motion. This event has happened on the highway, local road, city streets, in fact, anywhere. It just happens without warning. It is happening more often, hence i am very concerned now. The latest occurrence was sunday, june 10, 2018. Before that, it was infrequent, and i thought it was normal over the years, but now it is happening too often.

Possible malfunction with the automatic braking system (abs). Car fails to brake properly and slides when pressure is applied the brake. My wife was driving about 45mph and when she tried to stop, slid into the back of an 18-wheeler.

Driving my 2013 toyotarav4ev when the vehicle shifted into neutral and would not shift back to drive and lost power while driving on the freeway at 70 mph. Lucky to be able to pull over to the side of the freeway. There was a message in the display of "check ev system. Have your vehicle checked by dealership immediately"

While backing up, vehicle accelerated rapidly hitting a parked vehicle doing much damage.wife driving many years, never hitting accelerator when she meant to hit the brakes.do not know why rapid acceleration occurred.has not happened moving forward.

The contact owned a 2013 toyota rav-4. The contact stated that vehicle was parked in a parking space when she shifted thegear shifter into reverse and the vehicle stalled.the vehicle restarted itself. The contact drove the vehicle around the corner and the vehicle stalled once more. The contact looked up and saw gray smoke coming from under the hood and all of the warning lights illuminated. The contact exited the vehicle when she saw gray smoke billowing and within seconds of exiting the vehicle, it was engulfed in flames. The police and fire rescue were on the scene and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a lot and the insurance company deemed it totaled, but couldn't diagnose what the failure was since the vehicle's exterior frames were only left. The contact informed charles maund toyota (8400 research blvd, austin, tx 78758) of the failure. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a claim, however they later informed the contact that the claim was denied since there was no indication that a defect caused the fire. The manufacturer informed the contact that upon inspection, the j hook was missing and the positive battery cable was welded to the battery hold down bracket as the failure. The contact stated that she saw a news article that nhtsa was probing engine compartment fire for 2013-2018 toyota rav4, and believed the failure was related. The failure mileage was 39,187.*ln

While backing out of my garage, saturday 12/12/15, my foot was on the brake, suddenly the engine speeded up radically and i sped backward to the end of my drive. I braked and shifted to neutral and switched off the engine. It stopped and upon restarting, was ok. This could be deadly if it happened in traffic.

The rav4 2013 is not even 5 years old yet. The car does not speed up when pressing gas and jerks suddenly. Per dealer, there is a problem with the computer connected to the transmission and had a lot of customers with the same problem.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while driving at any speed, the vehicle accelerated then stalled without warning. The engine, the traction control, and the four wheel drive light illuminated after the failure occurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for the failure. The dealer performed a diagnostic that was unable to locate a failure code. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100 and the current mileage was 2,120.

While stopped at a traffic light with the transmission in drive, the engine shut off without warning, and the steering wheel locked.the radio and headlights remained on.this the second occurrence within 6 weeks.

The contact owns a 2013 toyotarav-4. The contact stated the while the vehicle was parked, the contact stated they noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood from the engine. The contact got out the vehicle and called 911. The vehicle engulfed in flames and no one was injured during the fire. The fire department was notified and extinguished the fire. A fire department report was filed. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The vehicle was not inspected or diagnosed by insurance company.the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.

Our toyota 2013 rav4 had a sudden acceleration. While driving on the highway, the gas peddle suddenly dropped to the floor, and the rpm's went from 3-8 instantly.upon braking, the accelerator went back to normal, but as soon as the brake was released, the problem immediately happened again.at this point, the brakes were applied again, and the car was pulled over.the car was shut off, then restarted.at this point the car drove normal from then on.

I saw article in usa today. Exact same thing was happening to my rav4 a month ago. I brought back to dealer and they changed the battery- but i paid for it.

On at least 5 different occasions since owning this toyota rav4 i have experienced a serious engine control problem.it happens in the economy mode of the car which is the default mode you start the car up in.what happens is when pulling into traffic and you push down on the accelerator to get fast speed to merge into traffic the engine stalls.you can have the accelerator pushed all the way down and the engine gives you no power.this creates a very dangerous condition on the road as my car is actually stalling when it should be accelerating.i have tested and done the same thing in the 'sport mode' of the vehicle and it does not create the same stall situation.thus my conclusion is the problem rests in the 'economy mode'.i have asked the dealer about this and they say they do not know why.i am going back tomorrow to as them to take back this car, as it is dangerous and is not predictable or dependable in driving.

I was preparing to make a right turn intoan exit driveway.about 12 feet directly in front of me was a cement brick wall paralleling the driveway.as i took my foot off the brake, the car rocketed into the cement brick wall.fortunately,, air bags deployed and i was not injured badly nor was anyone else.$ 13,000 to fix my car and i don't know if this will happen tome again. I will be like driving a time bomb.i plan to take the car to toyota and have them check my systems and certify, this will not happen again. I am very fortunate that this did not happen in traffic.

Within the first few months after purchase the engine of my vehicle would sometimes hesitate during a turn. It for a moment will loose power and then have a burst of acceleration. It seems that this happens most often after it has been driven, then parked for a short time and then started and turned but it may also have happened at other times. It seems to be happening more often lately and makes turning dangerous if there is a vehicle approaching across the curve of thee term. I know others have experienced this same problem with the 2013 rav4. I asked the dealer's service department if then could fix the problem and was told no. This problem is dangerous.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled several times without warning. The vehicle was restarted, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 4,800.updated 6/8/2015

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav 4.the contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the entire instrument panel illuminated as the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was unable to be restarted. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer, who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced.the vehicle was repaired.the manufacturer was notified of the failure.the approximate failure mileage was 8,600.

I purchased the 2013 rav4 in april, 2013.within a few months, i began to smell an odor coming from the ac when i start the car.the dealership states that the box that holds the ac condensation is too small due to manufacturing changes.on my second trip to the dealership with this complaint, they sprayed ac freshener in the part underneath the car.this helped with the odor but only temporarily.i am concerned that what i am breathing is mold and that this will only get worse as long as i keep the car.i believe this could harm my health over time. The dealership rep stated that this is a problem on these cars from time to time.i like my car (my 5th toyota) but i would not recommend it to anyone due to this issue.

I have brought my 2013 rav 4 back to the toyota dealer twice for this problem.there is a damp and musty smell coming thru the air vents.toyota has replaced the air filter and sprayed some air freshener but the smell is still there.the service rep had explained to me that there is a drain and this drain allows water to build up and that is what causes the odor.

I purchased the 2013 rav4 limited with navigation and a blind spot monitor, however i do not believe themonitor works correctly, it does not give any indication that something (another vehicle) is approaching until the vehicle is at the side door of my vehicle, way too late to make an adjustment to your changing lanes.i have had it back to my toyota dealers two times, on the first visit the car was in for a 6 month check up and i said something about it at the time, but nothing shows on my visit that it was checked so i assumed that it was corrected.after that visit i realized that the blind spot monitor was still not working, so on myone year inspection and check up i specifically asked for the blind spot monitor to be checked again.this time when i got my bill for the pennsylvania emissions test i noted the blind sport monitor was notpart of my repair bill, so i questioned the service rep, who explained there was no adjustment for this part.i went to the sales manager about it and she said she would have toyota contact me.when i was not contacted by toyota i sent a email to toyota owners web site and made a compliant, theyresponded that i should take it back to the toyota dealer and tell them i need an adjustment on the blind spot monitor, which i did, when i returned to pick up my rav4 i was told they could not find any problem and there was nothing could be done.my compliant is if it is not adjustable then it is a safety issue that should be looked into. Thank you

The navigation screen is totally unuseable in daylight.screen is flat and exposed to sun.driver has to lean way over and hold right hand over the screen to get any visibility at all.even then it's too difficult to see, not to mention the danger of leaning over, using the right hand to screen, and staring at the screen rather than the road.terrible terrible design.toyota will not address the problem.$1500 mistake for anyone who purchased this add-on.

The vehicle does not come with voice activated bluetooth.to make a call you need to go through several steps, one includes looking at a screen which is hard to see, if there is a glare on it. You spend too much time looking at screen to find number, all the while with your eyes off the road.

It is nearly impossible to see the navigation screen from the normal driving position in the sunlight due to glare.this causes the driver to take his eyes off the road for an extended time.this is unsafe and could cause and accident.toyota service claims the system is operating as designed.

At any speed in any weather it is impossible to see the navigation system in this vehicle...this needs addressed by the manufacturer as is a paid for upgrade and due to people working to see the system accidents are going to happen.

When driving at any speed, under any condition, it is impossible to see the navigation screen, causing the driver to look, rather than glance, at the screen to determine driving instructions, road hazards, warnings, etc. The glare is almost blinding at times.

The gps is unusable in daylight due to the glare...my other car, a subaru, works perfectly.toyota complain division is very polite but says the vehicle is ok? silly but i gaveup contacting them.

There is huge sun reflection on navigation system & you have very poor vision on navigation. Time to time you have to change your head position to find right angle to read navigation display. This will danger the life of driver tremendously.

I own a 2013 rav 4 limited with entune navigation. During the day it is not possible to view the screen. Toyota should take action to correct this issue.

The instruments (speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge) of the car do not light up if the headlights are off. This can be dangerous when driving under underpasses or in the shadow of trees, etc., since one unexpectedly cannot see the speedometer or tachometer under those conditions.

I bought a new 2013 rav 4 with toyota navigation. On any sunny day it is impossible to read the map due to the glare. I plan on complaining to the dealership this week.

Unintended acceleration. I was pulling into park at work with my foot on the brake (fortunately) and the rav4 suddenly accelerated.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the engine warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician diagnosed that the fuel cap needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 19,000.

While backing up, vehicle accelerated rapidly hitting a parked vehicle doing much damage.wife driving many years, never hitting accelerator when she meant to hit the brakes.do not know why rapid acceleration occurred.has not happened moving forward.

Givehight starting

On rare occasions when driving, i will suddenly lose power.it's as if someone has suddenly turned off the ignition switch.depressing the gas pedal will not solve the problem. The only way to regain power is to take your foot off the gas pedal and then push down again to regain speed.it can occur at any time on flat roads, hills, snow or rain covered, there seems to be no reason for this.the toyota dealer says he can't solve the problem unless i can duplicate the problem for him sohe can see for himself what is happening & then solve the problem.but i can't duplicate the problem!it's totally random.this puts me literally on pins & needles when i drive because what happens if i am passing a car and suddenly i lose power?i have 20000 miles on my vehicle and loss of power has occuredmaybe 20 times.this is very frustrating and dangerous.

The fuel pump entire system failed.i have a receipt of $731.50 to have it fixed. I was stranded coming off belt parkway in new york city, i feared for my car as the cars came flying off of the exit ramp. The toyota company has sent recalls on most of their fuel pumps except my 2013 toyota rav4. All of my alerts went on immediately but then the car just stopped and i managed to coast to the off the ramp.there were no warnings but when i looked up toyota recalls the main problem is their fuel pump injectors in most of their cars and i had no knowledge of this.

I leased a rav4ev. Went to pick it up on thursday (8/8/13) and it wouldn't start-- check ev system, etc. Dealer gave me a loaner, it spent the day in the service dept, and they wound up updating the software & it apparently was ok. Brought the car home on friday. On sunday, 8/11/13, the entire system turned off while i was driving on the freeway-- engine stopped, power steering stopped, and i was luckily able to negotiate across 4 lanes of traffic and get off of the road. Check ev system message on screen, battery is still half full. It was towed to the dealer, 120 miles on the odometer.it was found that the propulsion system and the gateway ecu were faulty.i decided not to keep that car and leased another rav4 ev.very scary!

The center console top arm resting padbetween the driver and the passenger does not locked in position so it moves back and forth depending on how you are leaning on it, if you have your arm on it and youmove your body it slides back and forth. If you only have one hand on the steering wheel with your arm onthe console pad, ifthe top padmoves back it willmake you go right into the ditch or if it moves forward you go left into on coming traffic.

The center console slides back and forth.while driving, if you have your arm on it, it will slide.the locking mechanism does not lock in place.i think this is a safety hazard and should be corrected.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the locks did not work at anytime. If the vehicle were locked manually, it would not unlock. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact called a local dealer and was informed that there were no recalls. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 47,000.

Transmission is not working correctly. It shakes a lot while drivingi took it to the mechanic and he confirmed that the transmission is not working correctly and should be replace under warranty recall since my vehicle only has 77000 miles.

My car is only 70,000 miles and from the past i am experiencing missed misfire of my transmission from 2nd to 3rd gear. The car is driven daily, but being fairly less number of miles this is a very unexpected behavior. I checked with a certified mechanic, who asked me to get it rebuilt for more than $3,000. But could not tell me the reason for this issue. He said likely to be toyota transmission issue.

Torque converter failed suddenly while crossing a highway bridge with no breakdown lane. No prior warning, just sudden rpm jump to redline and no ability to accelerate. Was able to coast across the bridge to an exit ramp. Dealer diagnosed the problem as a transmission failure. Since car was out of warranty, we brought it to an independent shop who found it was actually the torque converter. The spline connection to the stator was broken, either the weld broke or the overrunning clutch gave out. This is the second torque converter in the car. The first was replaced due to a shuddering issue 2 years ago at 45,000 miles. This failure occurred at 78,000 miles. Toyota denies any responsibility since the second failure occured outside the 1 year repair warranty. Independent research shows this likely isn't isolated and is related to defects with the similar camry torque converter. Transmission was torn down and rebuilt out of precaution and no damage was found, thus the failure was entirely due to a defective torque converter. I brought the part to the dealer so that they could witness the failed part.toyota also confirmed that there was no preventative maintenance required on the transmission.

Since brand new at times when stopped then accelerate to turn left or right it will hesitate when i am half way turned causing the vehicle to lose power then it will catch causing a burst in acceleration. At times i have lost power when i need it most. It is very dangerous. I have called my dealers attention to it and was told they cannot duplicate in a test drive so nothing is wrong. It does not do it often 6 or 7 times a week but it seems to be getting worse. This is a huge safety issue.

While accelerating from approximately 20 mph, a jerk was felt and a noise was heard as the vehicle was shifting gears. (this vehicle is an automatic.) this same incident occurred again later the same day. However, after the second incident, the "check engine" light and the "traction control" light came on. This occurred on the first day of ownership of the vehicle with only 15 miles on the odometer. This vehicle was brought back to the dealer for a replacement.

Transmission hesitates 2 to 3 seconds before changing from park to drive or reverse to drive and jumps when it goes to drive if you don't leave your feet on the brake pedal until it gears.

Tourque converter is bad in rav 4 vehicle and it has to be replaced in every vehicle. I observed hesitation in lower speeds like 30 miles an hour when i had 20 to 30 thousand miles in my vehicle. I did a mistake and didn't cared much about this issue. At 78,000 miles, the toyota dealer diagnosed my vehicle with bad tourque converter and it needs to be replaced. Costs me about 2,500 to do it. I just want the owners of the rav 4 to go to dealers to make sure they would check this issue before 60,000 miles and get it fixed. Looks like rav 4 has this issue with transmission in every vehicle and its better as a consumer, we would fix it before the warranty expires at 60,000.this is a safety issue as well because the vehicle behind you may hit you due to loss in acceleration and cause injuries and accidents.thank you.

Torque converter shudder: occurs between 35 mph - 40 mph, when engine still cold and accelerating lightly. Occurs during shifting between low gears. Never had this issue at higher speeds. Shudder is temporary lasting just a few seconds but vibration is obvious during power transfer from front to back.

While driving on highway at 55mph,my new 2013 toyota rav4 limited suddenly slowed down and would not shift into gear properly when i accelerated. I pulled off the road asap and had vehicle towed to dealership. They have diagnosed transmission failure. There is less than 600 miles on the odometer.

I have brand new 2013 toyota rav4. While i was driving the vehicle, vehicle suddenly stopped without any kind of indication or warning. The car behind me was about to hit my vehicle. Some how, he could manage to divert the vehicle. After that engine starts, but it was unable to move any further. I had stand in the middle of road, blocking the traffic. Finally i had to tow the vehicle from that place to service center. Luckily it happened in the city limits. If the same thing happens on the highway, i am sure, i might not be living anymore. I checked with toyota service department, they said it is an axle failure. I am surprised to hear that, how come a brand new car (4 months old) could have mechanical failure without anykind of warning and in the middle of the road suddenly stops. I could not even pull out the car from the road.

My 2013 rav4 is having torque converter issues and shudders at low acceleration. Toyota issued a customer bulletin with an extended warranty deadline of 8 years of first use or 150k miles. My car started having this issue sometimes in 2018 and toyota dealership diagnosed it as replace bolts. I explained to toyota but they said extended warranty has expired and will not cover costs to get torque converter/transmission fixed. Now the issue on my car has gotten worse and brought it up with dealership again this year and they linked it to the customer notice which had expired. Now, toyota corporation won't make an exception and assume that i had tried to get it fixed the first time within an active warranty in 2018. Issue is with torque converter and transmission shudder at low acceleration.

Potentially lethal transmission failure in toyota rav4in march 2013 i bought a new toyota rav4 at acton toyota, in massachusetts.on february 21st 2014, i was driving the vehicle in sudbury, massachusetts on route 20 when suddenly it went completely haywire. The engine stalled out ? restarted ? stalled out again ? restarted. This was all while the vehicle was moving. I drove into the local citizens bank car park, where i parked head in to a very large snow drift. I then discovered that all the gears were gone except for 'd'!oi cycled several times through closing the car down and restarting it - no change.oi could not push the car backwards away from the snow drift on my own.oeventually i was towed to the dealership.oon arrival at acton toyota, the service director - randy irwin - tested the car and immediately encountered the issue - shifter in reverse - revving the engine - nothing. He tried this with all the different shifter positions other than 'd', always with the same result. He then engaged 'd' and moved the car forward slightly. He then slowly engaged reverse and there was a huge clunk from under the car. And now reverse was engaged! the dealership gave me a loaner vehicle and kept the rav4. On march 3rd 2014, i phoned irwin - he said a toyota representative drove it the previous week. There had been no recurrence of the problem - now they were doing a 'visual inspection' (whatever that is!) since nothing came up in diagnostic tests.on march 5th 2014 i phoned irwin again ? he said that toyota had taken the case over. Toyota then called - they said they had not been able to get the issue to recur, and so they requested that i pick up the vehicle at the dealership. This i did. At no point did toyota ever acknowledge a problem ? they always stated simply that they had not been able to get the issue to recur.

Vibration at low speeds .

At first it happened only when turning corners or starting from a stop light.the car would just seem to stall for 3-4 seconds, then resume normal acceleration.this hashappened several times over past year. Yesterday it happened while on mainhighway at 65 mph. "scary!"i started losing speed, then it resumed normalspeed after 3-4 seconds.i talked to toyota service manager today.he says there'sno way to diagnose the problem unless they can duplicate it. That might take 100sof miles as it"s so intermitant. He claims their computer won'tshow a code for theproblem. I am at a loss as to what to do.if it loses power on a crowedfreeway itcould be quite dangerous.the vehicle has 44000 miles.

This complaint involves sudden acceleration.it occurred twice, once when shifting from drive to reverse andagain when you get shifting from reverse to drive.the car was at a standstill both times.the first time was april 2017.i was driving along a neighborhood street at 20 mph.when i stopped and put the car in reverse, it shot off like a rocket.i applied the brakes; the car started spinning around.i pulled the emergency brake and the car stopped.the second event occurred on january 4, 2018.i was backing out of a parking space; i stopped so i couldrenter the space. When i shifted from reverse to drive, the car roared off and became airborne.it flew over the median and hit the car parked in the space opposite.the time between when it accelerated and when it hit the other car was so fast i did not have time to apply the brakes.it felt like we were flying and the car was in total control.i feel there is some flaw in the electronic system controlling the gears.no police report was filed because it occurred on private property.my passenger was slightly injured - a bruised clavicle, probably from the seatbelts.

My 2013 toyota rav4 is showing transmission issues. After starting, put in gear and it won't move, just revs like in neutral. When i shut off and restart it runs. This has happened to me 4 different times in the past 2 months, and one time i was in a line of cars and when it was my turn to go, it was just revving. I have brought it to my local dealer 3 times for this, one time they had it for 3 days and another time overnight so they could do a cold start again. They told me they could not find any problems. There is something definitely wrong with it. There are also times when going down the road it like shifts to a lower gear, like something holding it back.

My seat driver side seat beltdid not work in a crash but the passenger worked

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the rear driver and passenger seat belts failed to lock. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the mechanism and panel needed to be replaced. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was unknown.

Continually since we have owned this vehicle, the drivers seat belt will not release to engage the seat belt.we have struggle with this, and as such on numerous occasions have driven the vehicle without the seat belt fastened, for as many as five blocks.this is unsafe.the dealer, and toyota advises me that "you do not know how to use a seat belt".are they crazy? i am 64, and know about seat belts, and safety.my father had many awards from the usaf for safety, and vehicle maintenance. This is a problemi have also have issues with the accelerator sticking, not sure if it ties to the cruise control.finally the gps gives incorrect or erroneous directions.they tell me it is up to date.the air bags based upon news are an unknown issue.it seems with these issues, they should replace vehicles before customers are injured, but the bottom line, is there profit margin/

I got my new toyota rav4 2013early in 2013.on the second day i owned it i noticed that the three tall and broad rear seat head rests obscured at least one-third of my view out the rear window.i took them out and have kept them out so i can have clear vision to the rear.it never occurred to me that the tall and broad head rest on the passenger seat also obscured my view out to the right. I side-swiped another car early in august, afterward telling the insurance adjuster that i did not see the car at all, had no idea of where it had come from. It wasn't until several weeks later that i realized that i had not seen the other car because the passenger seat head rest obscured my 'over the shoulder view' to the right.i realize that these head rests are presumed to prevent neck whiplash injuries.as it happens i am a physician and fully understand the danger of whiplash injury.buthead rests such as these, at least in the toyota rav 4 2013, are very dangerous as they obscure the driver's vision both to the rear and to the right.

Brakes fading and overheating.during a long descent on highway that required frequent application of brakes to maintain speed, i experienced significant brake fading and overheating.at the end of the hill brake effectiveness was significantly reduced requiring more pressure and pedal travel to achieve adequate braking action.braking was also accompanied by vibration that could be felt in the steering wheel.braking performance was restored after the brakes cooled down.after the incident i did a bit of research and found that rav4 le is equipped with smaller front brakes than xle and limited models.le front rotors are only 10.8", significantly smaller than 11.7" rotors on the xle and limited, as well as most competitive vehicle which come equipped with ~12" or bigger brake rotors.based on the fading / overheating experienced and the fact that rav4 le brakes are much smaller than most other small suv, it appears to me that the brakes rotors are undersized for the size / gvwr of this vehicle.

Brakes scrape loudly while backing and on turns.took into dealer, rear pads glazed ,rotors uneven dealer sanded and deglazed rear pads, apply finish cut/machine to rear rotors now at0.455innew rotors0.472not a good sign at 5343 miles.

Hi,we (myself, my wife and daughter) had an accident dated 08/02/2015 due to brakes in our toyota 2013 rav 4 didn't function. We were traveling at posted speed of 65/hr and there were3 cars ahead of us that braked suddenly. There was enough time for all cars to stop including our car but inspite of full braking it failed to and happened to crash into the car ahead of us. Our car just could not come to complete stop. We strongly feel its not safe for our family to drive in that car any more. We have opened a case with toyota as well, but its been 3 days have not heard back from them yet. All they did was email us saying they were unable to reach us when we did not received any calls at our end. We request you to please look into this matter and it might be a serious issue.thanking you,[xxx] family. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. While attempting to park the vehicle in a parking lot, the brakes failed. As a result, the contact's vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle, which then crashed into a third vehicle. There was no warning indicator. A police report was filed and there were no injuries. The vehicles had minor damage. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 24,000.

The brake line on the on the driver's side leaked brake fluid on the rotors and pads leading to an increased risk of crash due to lubricated brakes

Makes lot of noise front brakes when driving and applying brakes.

This vehicle has a faulty brake, it makes a sound every time you apply brake. Moreover the brakes feels very soft, need to push very hard on brakes to stop the car. Bought the car new and on original toyota brakes that came with the new car. It is a safety problem.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. While driving 55 mph, the brake pedal was depressed abruptly to avoid crashing into another vehicle. After the incident, every time the brake pedal was depressed, there was an abnormal noise coming from the rear brakes. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brakes seized and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that both rear pads, rotors, and hardware needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 30,000.....updated 07/05/16

I saw article in usa today. Exact same thing was happening to my rav4 a month ago. I brought back to dealer and they changed the battery- but i paid for it.

The contact owned a 2013 toyota rav4. While attempting to reverse, the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration. The contact attempted to stop the vehicle, but the brakes ceased. As a result, the vehicle jumped the curb and crashed into three trucks and a tree. The failure occurred without warning. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was not filed. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard where it was deemed destroyed. The manufacturer and dealer were not contacted. The vin was invalid. The failure mileage was 379.consumer stated she started reversing and suddenly the car started acceleration, she pressed the brake it did not stop as a result the car went out of control and hit 3 parked trucks. Updated 8/15/18

This vehicle has a faulty brake, it makes a sound every time you squeeze the release the brake. Moreover the brakes does not grip as tight as expected from a brand new car.

While i was stopping in front of a red light, and my foot was on brake pedal, the car started to move, i pushed the brake down as low as possible, car kept on moving. I then used the hand brake to stop the car. Luckily, there was no car in front of mine, so no accident. This happened on last saturday, may 21, 2016, early in the morning. After the incident, the car's brake functions as expected. But i always have a fear that it might do the same thing sometime someday, and i might not be lucky enough to be accident free.

The rav4 was purchased new from a dealer. While driving home, the brake pedal travel felt excessive, as if there was too much air in the system. With a moderate brake application, it felt as though the pedal was almost to the end of its stroke. I measured the pedal travel statically in my garage = with 25 pounds effort, the travel was 2.5 inches. But with 100 pounds effort, the pedal was about 1/2" from the floor, meaning that in the advent of a failed brake circuit, there would not be enough pedal travel to safely stop the vehicle. Also, the pedal effort v. Travel felt linear, and not asymptotic as one would expect from a brake pedal.i took the rav4 to the dealer service dept. They reported that they found no issues and no service was done. After the visit to the dealership, the brake pedal feel was completely different. The pedal travel at 25 pounds effort was now 1.5", which felt normal. Also, the pedal feel was now asymptotic and plenty of travel was left available to allow for a safe stop with a failed circuit. Since i have no idea what changed on the vehicle during its visit to the dealership, it leaves open the question of whether the unsafe condition of the rav4 braking system in the brand new state is a systemic issue.on a separate issue, while measuring the brake pedal travel in my garage i noticed that the brake booster would deplete in the middle of a brake application if the brake pedal is modulated slightly (for example, pulsed up and down slightly without fully retracting it). I consider this unsafe as well because if an unusual event occurred, such as an unintended acceleration, then the brake booster would quickly deplete leaving the driver without brake assist and unable to stop the vehicle, unless he/she had the presence of mind to fully retract the brake pedal and reapply it firmly.

Brakes failed while driving at low speed in the city of yonkers, new york.car has very low mileage and has had routine maintenance thru toyota dealership

The brakes never appeared to be right on this car from day 1. They squeek when braking and there's nothing wrong with the pads, shoes or rotors, per several mechanics, including toyota certified mechanics. Got them cleaned but the problem recurs. If i hit the brakes too hard for an extended period of time, the car begins to shake until i let up on the brake. This happens at any time, on any roadway, while in motion.

Possible malfunction with the automatic braking system (abs). Car fails to brake properly and slides when pressure is applied the brake. My wife was driving about 45mph and when she tried to stop, slid into the back of an 18-wheeler.

I leased 2013 toyota rav4, around 2900 miles the warning and indicating lights on the instrument panel lit up while i was driving. Took the car to the dealer who determined the cause was"some one hit abs sensor and cut harness ..." since the sensors were not under warranty, it will cost me $600 in repairs. The failed sensors are used for vehicle safety and traction control . I think that the cable harness should be designed to be better protected from road hazards and the customer should not be liable for toyota design flaws.plead find attached some supporting documents.thank you,

Car engine would not turn on. Indicator light for steering was on.. Once i pulled the steering hard then car started fine. Searching online i see there are reports of auto steering issues with other model.battery was functioning fine as everything else would turn on, ie, radio, ac ..fan, lights

While stopped at a traffic light with the transmission in drive, the engine shut off without warning, and the steering wheel locked.the radio and headlights remained on.this the second occurrence within 6 weeks.

Clunking noise coming from the steering column when make left or right turns at low and high speeds. Dealership inspected my car, even test drove with one of the mechanics, and they claim they can't find anything after several appointments and inspections. Finally, they said it's something with my steering and have yet to fully diagnose and fix the problem. A quick google search and you'll find many people with the same problem and little help from the dealership.

Tell me who to talk to about how you decide safety features for the newly improved electronic systems in cars. Or forward this to them.first of "objects in mirror are closer than they appear".have you driven on the highway lately?did you not notice how each and every car gets in front of a semi w only 3' distance? that mirror thing needs to be reviewed because no one is paying attention. I don't see any cars in my blind spot. Then there is that new thing about putting the dialing pad on my new panel? what's the difference between that and my dialing on my phone.accident waiting to happen.now, some cars have auto answer with a button, others don't.mine has the answer which should be painted green but it's not, but it does not have the "call button" voice activated. Only upgraded vehicles do.so, i'm on the highway and forget what exit or what city i'm supposed to get off on. It's rush hour and the traffic is moving slowly.i have to pull off to the curb and call?.then i have to merge onto that crazy traffic.really? who actually does it.and you ask why there are so many accidents? this should be a mandatory feature on all cars from now on for an actual hands off experience.bluetooth is the best new invention for driving, but we need to utilize it to it's best. Next: my car has a metallic decorating rim on the dashboard.i was almost blinded by the sun the other day. I had that and the window of the car in front of me shining on my face.i could barely find a safe spot for me to see.please look into this and make certain things mandatory standard features (no metal rims on dashboard.).you want safety?lend me each new car and i bet you i will find stuff wrong with it within the month.thanks for letting me vent.

There is huge sun reflection on navigation system & you have very poor vision on navigation. Time to time you have to change your head position to find right angle to read navigation display. This will danger the life of driver tremendously.

Thank you

The center console slides back and forth.while driving, if you have your arm on it, it will slide.the locking mechanism does not lock in place.i think this is a safety hazard and should be corrected.

I have stated my complaint for the third time. Twice with clearwater toyota and once with sun toyota in holiday fl. But nothing comes of it. In one ear and out the other. Every morning ,the side windows on our vehicle are wet with water droplets from natural morning dew. When i lower the window to clear them ,it doesn't do it. Unlike all other cars i have owned or seen, the squeaky is in contact with the window which in turn "clears the windows". It is a definite dangerous situation. As i reach the point to make a left turn or a right turn i am confronted with a completely blind spot .i don't know if i clearly explained... It requires the driver to go out and clear the side windows before one can safely drive the car. I have measured the space between the glass and the rubber squeaky and it is as thick has a piece of paper folded in eight. A large space! when the window is raised , at the last fraction of an inch ,before closing, it makes a quick jerk to come into contact with the squeaky. The sales person agreed the it was a fault but replied "that's how it is..." when i'm dropping off my daughter at school ,in the mornings it's still dark out, and when i reach the point to turn i must lower my windows to get a visual. The dealers don't give a [xxx]! can you check into it? or do you just file information....information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The center console slides back and forth. While driving, if you have your arm on it, it will slide. The locking mechanism does not lock in place. I think this is a safety hazard and should be corrected.it is very noticeable when a passenger is using the center console as an arm rest as well, if you are reversing, and/or you are adjusting while operating the vehicle in any way with your arm on the center console.

The installed navigation screen is impossible to see in the driver's normal driving position and in almost any daytime lighting condition. Glare from the screen and dashboard borders on unsafe. There is no way to safely use that item and the 12 or so functions located there without significant distraction.because of the potential distraction this will cause accidents and some will be fatal.

Paint peeling off my car.toyota stated over a year ago that they would repai nt the affected area but have not done so yet.

Car painting is detaching.a small hole is formed and then become bigger every day.

"blizzard pearl bisque" paint peeling between the windshield and the sunroof. Paint is coming off in large pieces the size of silver dollars. Paint "blisters" first then just falls off the roof of the car. This problem has been there for the better part of the year and seems to have nothing to do with the car being stationary, in motion - or the environment. It has been parked in the same places that my prior toyotas have been parked, and this problem has never occurred before. My wife and i have seen this problem, with this color paint on other rav4s, prius, and lexus models.

2/20/20172013 toyota rav4 limited pear white. One week age on a saturday i was wetting my suv with a garden hose while it was parked and the engine off before washing and when i got to the passenger door on drivers side paint started flaking off. I stopped spraying at that time and i was left with a 3 inch diameter area that has no paint left, but a gray base. I did report this to lake charles toyota in louisiana and was told since the factory warranty has ended and i have 60,000 miles, that toyota would not cover, to have it repaired. I questioned them about my 'bumper to bumper' extended warranty and it was left up to the manager of the service department and he said the extended warranty would not cover it.this is the worst treatment i have ever received from them. The service starting going downhill about two years ago at lc toyota. I have referred several people there for purchase of their new vehicle. But will only give negative reviews on them now.melinda d. In louisiana

Roof paint peeling off

The paint on the hood is bubbling and peeling off.

Door lock actuators failed in every door. The passenger and driver actuators failed completely and the two back doors will work sometimes and won't others.

Toyota rav4 with the blizzard white paint have a paint peeling problem which can quickly become a safety issue when it peels off the engine hood and flies up on the windshield blocking your field of vision on i-84 at 90ft/sec.toyota will only paint parts of the car as they peel from the primer but they should paint the entire car since the paint and primer are the same on the entire car.they did some bogus tests and told me the rest of car was okay.i picked the car up on february 6 and one week later the passenger car door started to peel.i have another appointment on march 9 to paint the passenger side door.the work is being done at greentree toyota in danbury,ct.toyota is procrastinating hoping these problems will disappear.

While opening the trunk, which is electric, the right lift gate piston blew and separated from the ball mount.at that point the trunk/hatch would not work electrically or by hand. In fact the malfunction of the piston was so intense it caused significant damage to the body of my car, buckling the back roof, shifting the door and buckling the hinges.the grand total of damage is well over $5000. Toyota was well aware of this defect.in fact i have their technical service bulletin from toyota that discusses the problem in detail (t-sb-0168-13 for which i am sending you a copy). The piston, known as an actuator has been changed after a certain vin # (see page #2 of attached bulletin).because of the defect i now have to replace the unaffected piston also. Each piston costs $686.16 for the part alone.if the car is under warranty they cover repair, as i have owned my car for almost 4 years, it is not covered.toyota not only knew about the defect, they chose not to notify the car owners'. If the pistons had been replaced, all of the other damage would not have occurred.several mechanics i spoke with could not believe this was not a recall. If an animal had been in the back or worse yet, if it occurred as it was open, it could potentially cause significant injury or worse. Apparently toyota does not have an obligation to repair this as it is no longer under warranty.if deemed a recall they would need to address this at no cost to the consumer. We contacted toyota; they have offered us $2500 as 'goodwill', which is less than 50%.at this point i am having them do the actual mechanical work, and will also have to pay over $1100 out of pocket to cover the full cost of the mechanical repair. This still will not address the body work. Therefore this will devalue my car, and also runs the risk of rusting as the paint is damaged.

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the front passenger door could not be unlocked and opened. The owner was only able to unlock the door from the front driver's side master lock. The contact stated that all the doors had previously experienced the failure and the door actuators were replaced. Andrew toyota (1620 w. Silver spring dr., milwaukee, wi) and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The failure mileage and vin were unknown.

When viewing my 2013 rav4 from the rear, i noticed that the car seems tilted to the left, in other words the rav4 sits higher on the right side than the left.i measured from the top of each wheel well to the ground and founds an almost 1" difference between the right side and the left on both the front and rear of the rav4.the measurement was repeated on 3 different level surfaces with the same results.the rav4 was returned to the dealer and they agreed.they wrote on the service invoice that this condition is "as designed at this time.also compared to other like vehicles and found same."the service manager also stated that they found differences from 0" to 3/4" on other rav4's and that there was no repair at this time.i am concerned because this condition might affect the handling of this vehicle or result in uneven tire wear.

While driving the vehicle on a city street, all the lights on the dashboard flashed on, then off. Vehicle immediately lost all engine and electrical power.i was able to drive the vehicle off the road and on to a parking lot. Thinking that a battery cable possibly had come loose, i raised the hood. The area at or near the battery was on fire.i called 9-1-1, but by the time the fire department arrived, the entire front part of the vehicle was in flames.the 2013 toyota rav4 was completely destroyed. I was not injured, but i am concerned that otherrav4 drivers may not be as fortunate.

Driving down the highway the sunroof exploded

While my daughter was driving on the interstate in oklahoma her sunroof exploded and shattered into small pieces of glass without any warning. She did not hear anything hitting it prior to it exploding. It just happened.

Speedometer is not accurate. When using an external gps unit in other vehicles, the speed on the speedometer is accurate. When i am driving in this 2013 toyota rav 4, the speedometer says 60 mph but the gps says 57 mph. The faster you drive , the larger the discrepancy.this is a limited with 18 'wheels, maybe it was set from the factory for 17' wheels?

I am entering a safety complaint regarding the headlights on my toyota 2013 rav4. Today, i went to my local car repairman to fix a headlight that blew out. This is the 3rd time in 6 months. In september, we had to completely change both headlights because parts in the headlights were melting. Yet, less than 6 months later, my passenger headlight blew out and needed to be replaced. There is something systematically wrong with my headlights. According to my car mechanic, it looks like they are going to continue to burn out. This creates hazardous driving conditions for me and my passengers.

Tried to place gear shift from park to reverse out of garage after startup. There was unusual noise, grinding, from automatic transmission. Put lever back into park and tried again to place transmissjon into reverse. And heard same noise. Shut off engine and made restart. All normal. This same type of event happened again approximately two weeks laterit has not, as yet, occured again.

The rav4 2013 is not even 5 years old yet. The car does not speed up when pressing gas and jerks suddenly. Per dealer, there is a problem with the computer connected to the transmission and had a lot of customers with the same problem.

Squirrels crawled into the hood and chewed the battery cable wire and turn signal wire, this happened 2 days in a row after repairs were done the first time. The soy based coating of the wires is attracting a swarm of squirrels.

Dear sirs, i don't have nothing to hide, we here on the island of curacao have been experiencing many vehicles which are chinese and their vin no, are also cloned, i believe this is a world problem, and also us manufacturers have to understand that this is a world problem, and they can also help to expose this situation.i have posted many on blogs, which has to do with the cloning of cars. There was also an issue with some one bought a vehicle at the toyota dealer a rav4 2013 and we came to find out that it is a 2010 mexican clone car. And i have reported these also to other agencies in usa , one of them is the sec securities exchange commission whistle blower department.

My husband and i were carpooling to work. While driving on the highway with minimal traffic in a clear straight away (no overpasses) we heard what sounded like a gun shot and i panicked. My husband thought i may loose control of the vehicle out of fear.he was able to coach me to pull off the highway so we could inspect the vehicle. The sunroof had looked like it exploded from the inside out. We called the dealership which stated they do not cover any glass damage and referred me to safelite which then referred me to sunroof express for repair. This was extremely upsetting as nothing struck the vehicle and we feel that we were not at fault. We did nothing to cause the breakage.

The vehicle is a clone rav4, i have bought this vehicle from a toyota dealer ship, and i paid for arav4 2013, when i went to investigate i found out it was cloned toyota rav4 of the year 2010, and it came from the factory in mexico, so these is against the laws. So what would you advise me to do?

The sunroof spontaneously shattered. It sounded like a loud thud of something hitting the roof of our car, but we were driving in an open park area with nothing overhead and no other cars within close distance. We opened the sunroof cover and saw that it had completely cracked. By the time we got home, much of the glass was missing.

Before my 2013 rav4 limited was even 2 years old, i discovered an indoor swimming pool on my passenger floor. My dealership claims that my rav4 had a clogged sunroof drainage tube, but when i took it to another dealership we found all evidence to the contrary. The service manager removed two pieces of trim: one that sits directly beneath the a-pillar (where the dealership claims the water travelled) and another that sits back underneath my dash and glove box. Both trim pieces had padding (just like the carpet padding) on the back side. The padding beneath the a-pillar was bone dry. The padding underneath the dash was damp. Please explain to me how water traveling down the a-pillar managed to make a 90 turn??? the dealership did nothing but clear the "supposed" clog and ask if i wanted to have the carpets air-dried for 24 hours. They made it sound like they did me such a great favor on the invoice and also like i was leaving the hospital against doctors orders. What they fail to mention is that a) i had already had the carpet padding air-dried the day before and b) i requested that they replace my carpet padding and reapply the black rubber soundproofing material attached to my floorboard (they declined). In hindsight, neither would have fixed the damage already inflicted upon my vehicle. Both toyota of north america and ncds declined my case claiming that my "vehicle is operating as designed." i have a new car that is dry rotting, molding, an electrical fire risk (page 409 of the 2013 rav4 owner's manual) and if it the water actually did run down the a-pillar my takata side curtain airbags are now primed to throw shrapnel -- but my vehicle is operating as designed!!! if you own a 2013 or 2014 rav4, please check under your carpets for signs of a water leak. If you find a water leak in your rav4, please post it here.

The car burst into flames spontaneously in the parking lot. Nobody was inside the car at that time. It happened a few minutes after the car was parked.firefighters put out the flames later. However, the car was completely destroyed. Fortunately, nobody was injured or hurt.

This repair is for the pistons on the rear lift gate of the 2013 toyota rav 4

The contact owns a 2013 toyota rav 4. The contact was driving 55 mph and noticed that the speed reading was inaccurate when compared to the speed displayed on the gps system. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but no repairs were performed. The contact stated that the mechanic confirmed that the speedometer was indicating a higher speed then the vehicle was actually traveling but the speed was within an acceptable range. The manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 127.

The contact stated that when the accelerator pedal was depressed, it remained stuck. As a result, the vehicle's speed increased and crashed into a retaining wall. The contact did not disclose if a police report was filed or if there were any injuries. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was unable to be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 15,000.

Unintended acceleration. I was pulling into park at work with my foot on the brake (fortunately) and the rav4 suddenly accelerated.

2 separate episodes of unintended acceleration in a brand new cardealer unable to verify defect.

Cruise control problem rpms jump from 2200 to 4000 or higher 5000 car is not safe to drive with cruise control on.

I did not realize that the rav4 class action was even filed. I own a rav 4 2003 and i never received a letter informing that there was a problem with this vehicle. I have 103,000 miles on it. I take it to the dealer on a regular base .recently 3/25, 2016 it started to run rough, and was difficult toaccelerate. I took it to my toyota dealer and they stated that they would adjust the ecm which they did and told me to drive it another 100 miles. Well, i asked them what happens if the problem persists and they said then we replace the ecm for $ 1100 dollars if that does not fix it they said they would charge me $6,000 dollars for a new transmission. At the time i did not realize how many other people who owned this model had this problem. So i took it home and have been driving it. I am a home dialysis nurse and travel quite frequently to patient's homes who depend upon me when they are having problems with their dialysis treatments. Well, needless to say, i was working late and coming home on a main highway pm 03/31/2016 and it hesitates to shift when merging and shakes. I was almost hit from behind but lucky it finally engaged and i was able to pull over in a nearby parking lot. I called my toyota dealer and told them and they went on to say well we then have to replace the ecm etc. I told them about my search regarding the problems with this model and they put the manager on the line. I told him about by research etc. He said he would then find parts from a discarded rav 4. Now i am without a car, which will affect the lives of my patient's, and how reliable will it be if they are going to the junk yard for parts to repair it.please help me.

The car accelerated suddenly without intent almost crashing into a wall. I was able to stop the car w/out injury or accident . I was entering my garage at a very slow speed ( under 5 mph).

Approaching stop sign with foot on brake, sudden acceleration , towards oncoming intersection , with cross traffic, vehicle still lungedand vibratedfurther, able to stop vehicle by turning the ignition off!

My front windshield has a crack from one end to the other.this appears to be a defect in the glass since there was no impact. It was first noticed when the windshield was covered with ice and the defogger was working to melt it. The vehicle was not moving as it was parked in my driveway.

We had a winter blizzard with ice, show wind etc. Where the wiper blades rest on the windshield they receive minimal if any direct heat.(i can not get a thin piece of paper between the dashboard and inside the windshield.the paper is 2 1/2" above the wiper blade.)i warmed the rav 4 for an extremely long period of time and the ice that had formed on the wipers before i started it would not melt off.i then scraped as much of the ice off the wiper as you can reasonably do without damaging the wiper and ice and snow off that part of the windshield where the blades rest.i started to drive but ice and snow immediately started accumulating on the lower part where defrost does not heat and the blades started to ice up and they scrap across the unheated area. Had totally unacceptable vision.would stop every so often and scrap everything best as i could. Start driving and a total unacceptable vision window almost immediately.i have driven in this area for 47 years in a lotof blizzards and with a lot of different vehicles. I have never had a situation where i could not keep my windows so i could reasonably see to safely navigate.this rav 4 would not let me do that and i have been in a lot worse blizzard conditions than this one.some toyotas have wiper de-icers with lines through the windshield to heat this part of the windshield where toyota decided to place the wipers.while we were not aware of this issue when purchasing this vehicle new, safety should not be an add on you have to pay for.toyota placed the blades where they are so they should de-ice.i understand heated side mirrors and the like but that is something that can be safely remedied by a driver who does not have them.this wiper problem can not be.thank you.

Struts are making a lot of noise in the rear of the car, also heat shield grommets are loose and produces a banging sound under the car. All the noises are noticeable while driving at low speeds. Torque converter and 6 solenoids had to be replaced

This is the second time in six months i have had to replace the rear windshield on my rav4. Both times it had been parked in a parking spot outside when the windows shattered. Both times there didn't seem to be a visible reason to have caused the shattering of the window .

When driving down the road at speeds over 35mph and a rear window is rolled down, with other windows up, there is a buffeting and feeling of pressure to your ears inside the vehicle.this can be very uncomfortable to the occupants inside the vehicle.i contacted toyota and was told via email that this is normal in modern vehicles.

I was puttting air in a flat tire in my driveway when there was a loud bang and the tire collasped. I looked at the tire ( bridgestone dueler h/t 687 235/55r18 dot # el7ccfh5012) and saw a 12 inch rip in the sidewall. The explosion caused a fender bracket to break and cracked my front bumper. I sent it back to mfgr. And they said the tire was not defective and denied request for compenssation for my damages and tire replacement.

Pressure sensors mal functioning. I took it to the dealer theysaid it might be damaged when tires were replaced and asking diagnostic fees and repair charges. This was an on going problem in this car
