Takata recall, my rear swerved as i moved right to avoid a head on collision, my chest hit the steering wheel so hard that i broke 6 ribs including my sternum because the airbags didn't deploy until after the impact , i also saw another recall that was announced 2 or 3 days after my accident which resulted in a total loss which was the rear suspension needed to be replaced because it could cause an accident i reported this to nhtsa and was given a reference number10937800, please keep me updated this is horrible that these people knowingly put faulty parts on a vehicle, i am still afraid to drive i felt my car shaking and blamed it on the roads, the wind, anything because i didn't want to believe someone would sell a vehicle knowing it was not safe

Date: 12/19/2010 from: [xxx] re: 2010 toyota rav 4 lease/ air bag safety concerni recently leased a rav4 from your dealership.i traded a 2007 pruis and have owned numerous toyotas.my reason for leasing the rav 4 was to make life easier and safer for my spouse who is undergoing cancer treatment.i made this fact known to my salesman sonny rothwell and brought her with me to test her getting in and out of the vehicle and general comfort. The vehicle was not running during this test.i drove the vehicle approximately 5000 miles without paying attention to the dash warning light regarding air bag activation.when i finally checked with your service department, they stated that the air bag light indicates that the air bag is not in active mode when off and that this occurs when there is not enough weight in the passenger seat.i asked the amount needed to activate the on position and they did not know.my wife is 5 1 and weighs 86 pounds and i would never have leased this vehicle if i would have known she would not have the benefit of air bag safety. Air bags saved my wife and mother in-lawseveral years ago.i called toyota corporate 800 331-4331 and explained my problem.they stated that it requires 90lbs of weight to activate air bag and that this could not be adjusted.ref# 1012030063i later called service manager david newton and he confirmed the 90 lb weight requirement.he suggested i bring the car in.prior to bringing the vehicle to the dealer, i tested the front seat by having my wife sit in the seat with a 16 lb bowling ball on her lap.the air bag light was still showing off. I also read my owners manual and found no indication of any weight requirement for air bag activation.there were references to children and luggage in passenger seat.i brought the car into your dealparts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *cc

Letter for direct reply- requesting legal assistance for accident involving 2010 toyota rav4 driver's air bag module failure.the consumer and his wife were involved in an accident, and the air bags failed to deploy.the repair shop informed the consumer, the air bag module was faulty prior to the accident.toyota claimed the air bags didnot deploy, because there was no direct frontal impact to the vehicle. ....updated 04/08/15 updated 04/13/15 updated 04/16/15 updated 11/4/2015
Side curtain airbags spontaneously deployed while vehicle was being backed out of a mechanic's garage after routine brake maintenance was performed. There was no impact prior to the deployment. Thankfully no one was injured, but it would have been a different story if my wife and kids were in the car and driving while this occurred. As of this writing, i have opened a case with toyota (corporate) as insurance has appraised the damage at over $11,000 making this a total loss. I have yet to hear anything from toyota regarding the claim.
"takata recall"
December 8, 2017, in 2010 rav4, about 27 mph heading forward, hit head-on, (city street) 12th st. Nw, albuquerque. Other driver dui (blew 2.6 about 1 hr later), wrong-way in my lane, drove silverado, seemed to speed up upon impact, attempted to keep going but silverado hooked into braked rav. My car was pushed backward about 40 ft., according to police officers. Shocking sound and feeling upon impact. My air bag deployed, but did not deflate--instead, it exploded. Have had breathing problems since, exacerbation of asthma, burning feeling in ears, other symptoms. I did not know that the air bag was supposed to deflate. Adjuster agrees it exploded, but does not know if he has a photo of the exploded air bag. He will look through his photos.

When my vehicle wasstopped i was rear ended at about 15 mph. Airbags did not deploy but all bag lights illuminated.
I was driving about 25 mph on the small street. The road curved a little in one place and two right wheels of my car went to the shoulder which was the same level as the road but a little bumpy or graveled. It took me a couple seconds to be back on the road but at the moment i was there the right side curtain airbag suddenly deployed.i was very scared and stopped and checked the car and the wheels ' there was nothing at all except two right wheels were dusty.i believe that it was a malfunction of a sensor because there was no impact and there were no any big rocks or pot holes on the road. But toyota refused to repair airbags and interior; they found a scratch on the wheel and claimed the wheel was bent. It was not true as it was found during repair in body shop. The repair cost was all for airbags / sensors and roof lining with just a fraction for balancing the wheel to be sure it was indeed ok. It was a normal use of the car, no any impact, but faulty sensor.

I was involved in an accident when my rav4 pulled to over the right side of the road causing the vehicle to strike a tree causing7 broken ribs and it totaled my car .i saw a recall that was issued in september that the rear tire rods can cause you to lose control causing a crash recently and i know that was the reason for this crash i drive this road frequently and have never had an issue until august 11th my both arms were injured and my chest and shoulder had scrapes and cuts to which i blame on the manufacturer, i am still recovering from my injury and also believe the airbag didn't deploy in time because out of the 7 broken ribs my sternum bone was broken from the steering wheel!!
We hit a deer while doing 45 to 50 mph on a local 2 lane highway. Damage was major and was mostly to the passenger front but we were able to drive it home (about a mile). Airbags did not deploy as intended and did not prevent passenger from hitting head on window trim. Passenger was taken to the hospital for head abrasion and neck pain. She was treated and released. Usually after a rain storm or if i go through a deep puddle the idiot lights for "check engine, slip indicator and 4 wheel drive" lights come on and stay on for about 30 miles.wednesday they came on and stayed on even though it hasn't rained in weeks.i've talked with several dealers and they tell me either there is no fix for it or toyota is investigating the problem.i've also talked to others with older rav4's and they tell me that they have the same situation going on.does toyota need a little nudge from the gov't?

The drivers side window switches are and have been sticky. A couple of months ago the passenger window failed to roll up and would not roll up with force. I saw the recalls to the year prior to my car make year and it's very similar. I think the same issue exists in the 2010 rav 4s.
The sensor within the compressorhas malfunctioned, everything works. Will need a tool every time i want to use defrosters or air condition. Will need to replace the whole compressor because of this internal sensor must have went bad/not working right. You need the defrosters in order to see to drive the vehicle. Vehicle was in motion, no defroster/air condition either.

My rear car suspension was incased because it was recalled. Over 55 mph was car would sway from side to side. I called toyota and was told my car was perfect. I took the car to two dealers who said at low speed the car performed well. The was a law suit in california that proved the car is defective after the recall. I missed the date because i did not research the web. I sold the car for less because i did not want a crash. I lost money on the car sale.
On 07/06/14 the car suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated at full throttle while stopped . Car moved toward motorcycle stopped ahead of me at the traffic signal even though i was pushing hard on the brake. If i had not turned the ignition off i would have hit the motorcycle. Today 08/06/14 at aprox. 20 mph the same thing happened. As i was slowing for a traffic light, the car accelerator went to full throttle uncontrollably running through a red light.

This car was bought for a new driver and we have had 2 separate occasions when she has gotten somewhere and the car wont start. All the warning lights come on, but will not do anything when you push the button.we can jump it and it will start.this is not safe for a young person that could get stranded at random somewhere, and is now afraid to take it somewhere.we have checked the connections and the battery has been checked and is fine.the other complaint is the rear suspension recall.the tires were rotated and now it has a vibration, i was told that because of the recall it cannot be aligned unless things are replaced because of the terrible fixjob on the recall.if something is recalled it should be fixed correctly and not be a bandaid job.there should not be a cost associated with a cheap fix that caused more problems.we purchased this vehicle because of reputation, if they are not supporting their product, then it will go and no other toyota products will be purchased.

The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. While driving approximately 3 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle's rpms increased, causing the vehicle to jerk forward. The contact applied more brake pressure than normal, which caused the vehicle to stop and the rpms to decrease. The vehicle functioned normally. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,500.
After completing a 5 block downhill drive in second gear with little use of either the accelerator or the brake, i then braked as i turned into my garage in order to park my vehicle. As i entered my garage and while still braking and at slowing speed the vehicle's engine suddenly accelerated and the vehicle lurched forward violently. I immediately applied heavy brake pressure and up shifted in an attempt to take the vehicle out of gear. My braking may have slowed, but did not stop, the vehicle's forward acceleration. When i put the vehicle into park, the wheels locked, forward progress stopped (just in front of the back wall of my garage), and i shut the engine off using the ignition switch. I did not think of trying to turn off the ignition switch first and i did not have time for different options; i had only a few seconds to get the vehicle under control or it would have hit the back wall of my garage. Once the engine was stopped, i waited a few seconds, restarted the vehicle (which started normally), and then backed into my parking space. I have not used the vehicle since.the consumer stated he experienced sudden acceleration twice in 4 years. Updated 04/08/14
Intermittently, my 2010 rav4 engine turns off, while driving, and then turns back on shortly after. This is very dangerous, as you lose power steering and brakes, meaningvery difficult to steer and stop. This happens when the car is in motion. Never had it cut out at a stop light. I'm thinking it's the ecm. The car's maintenance is very up to date. My daughter drives this vehicle and it has happened to her numerous times. I have experienced it once, shortly after getting the car from the toyota dealership. I asked them about it and they weren't able to offer any suggestions, other than i could pay them to diagnose the problem. There are no error codes registered when this happens, which is why i think it's the ecm. Toyota has upgraded the code level for the ecm twice, so i'm thinking there are issues they addressed in upgrading the code. I just can't find what those upgrades fixed anywhere online. My daughter is afraid to drive the car, and if the dealership isn't willing to talk to toyota first about the problem, i'm not going to shovel money into their pockets to tinker around with it...it has to happen in their presence, as they say...
On several occasions the cruise control did not disengage, either when the brakes were applied or the lever pulled. It has accelerated at least twice while approaching slowed traffic, ahead.
I have a toyota 2010 rav4, but presumed all new toyota vehicles, encourage recirculating toxic gases in a closed vehicle. Toyota's automatic climate control system automatically puts the air on recirculate every time the car is started. Regardless of inside / outdoor temp; regardless of humid or dry; regardless of everything the air is always on recirculate whenever the car is started. Toyota claims that the car automatically senses and adjusts according to conditions - but this in not true!the car always starts and stays on recirculate. Knowing the hazards and recommendations for safety levels of the toxic gases that accumulate in a closed car (such as, http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/benzene.asp), toyota's current air system is proving hazardous to everyone's health!this terrible feature can not be turned off. Toyota's automatic system for air control is not responsive to conditions but instead encourages passengers to remain captive with recirculating toxic gases and is in fact detrimental to everyone's health. (no specific 'incident date', ongoing) thanks!
On september 1 i was driving in a congested area approaching an intersection with stopped traffic.as i was applying my brakes i suddenly felt my 2010 toyota rav4 lurch forward - at first i thought i had been hit from behind, but a quick glance in my rearview mirror indicated the car behind me was still at a safe distance.i quickly turned off my radio to hear my engine roaring as i was continuing to apply the brakes.i then put the rav4 in neutral while the engine continued to roar.once in neutral, the rav4 came to a stop.i then depressed the accelerator several times and the engine settled down.as i approached the intersection i was traveling at a slow rate of speed.when i applied the brakes the rav 4 was slowly coming to a stop until i felt the car lurch forward.once i began applying the brakes i did not take my foot off the brake pedal, nor did i apply any pressure to the accelerator.in addition, my carpet mat was several inches away from the accelerator pedal at all times.in my mind, this is clearly an acceleration issue that easily could have resulted in an accident if i had not put the transmission into neutral.i also filed a complaint with toyota.the toyota case number is [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

On a public main street traveling 35-45 mph, started to brake to stop for a light changing from yellow to red.as the brake was applied, the engine began to rev to 5000 rpm.the brakes were holding back the car, but the acceleration was persistent.the car barely stopped before entering the intersection, but the engine remained at what appeared to be full throttle.i shifted the stopped vehicle into park on this automatic transaxle vehicle.the engine/transaxle made a significant "bang" as it was shifted, the engine stopped revving and the accelerator pedal shot back toward my leg hitting my ankle.at no time did my right foot leave the brake pedal.in fact, i was pressing the brake with all my strength to complete the stop.this is the third time something like this has been reported by family members.it was my first direct experience with it and the vehicle is just over a year old.it has been into the dealer for this reason and received a recall upgrade several months ago during a routine free maintenance visit.i have contacted toyota directly to terminate my lease on this and another exact same make/model/year leased the same day.i feel that toyota has not fixed the issues from 2010 and that adjustments to the floor mats and accelerator pedal are not addressing what is really wrong.the fact that both vehicles were supposed to have received "reprogramming" to solve this issue leads me to believe there is a software problem that remains undiscovered.updated 10/03/11
With the vehicle in park and the brake pedal depressed, the engine reved immediately to around 6000 rpm when started. I turned off the engine without shifting out of park, got out of the car, and visually checked the floormat. It was not touching the throttle pedal and the throttle pedal did not appear to be depressed. After approximately 1 minute i started the engine a second time and the same thing occurred. I then waited approximately 5 minutes, pumped the throttle pedal several times, then started the vehicle a third time. This time the vehicle started normally (engine idling). I then drove home without further reving issues and have not had any reoccurence since the incident date. I took the vehicle to a local toyota dealership for service the next day and was told that it was a floormat issue, and my driverside floormat was removed by the dealership. I disagree with this assessment. It is important to note that before i had the reving issue upon starting the vehicle, my last interaction with the vehicle was to have my foot completely off the gas pedal as i was steering the car into a parking space, when i was using only the brake pedal to moderate my speed, with no throttle pedal pressure being applied by me, and with the engine idling, as is normal. Do not see how this could be a residual stuck throttle pedal issue when i returned to my automoble and started the engine to drive away. The only other factor which may (or may not) be relevent was that when i turned the engine off after parking, i did not first turn the radio off, which i usually do. I believe i was tuned to a satellite station at that time (xm).
I was driving alone into the germonds village condominium development located off eastlyn drive near route 304 in bardonia, ny.i drove slowly into the complex parking lot.i turned right to park in a space in front of a garbage collection structure.while entering this space, i was driving very slowly.i placed my foot on the brake to stop when suddenly the car accelerated, made a 'changing-of-gear type sound' and catapulted into the garbage structure at a very high rate of speed.the structure caused the car to stop.i put the car into park and shut the engine off.notably, neither the driver side or passenger side airbags deployed.i was shaken and very scared but not injured.the car sustained heavy damage to the front end, front right side and the right front tire.the structure (brick sides with garage door in middle) also sustained heavy damage especially the bricks on the right side that crumbled.i notified toyota and await their engineering inspection.
I have a vibration when going between 62-70mph.have no idea from whathave taken it to the dealer, they balanced the tires, we had a private tire dealer check the balance, still there.the owner of our dealership called and said she test drove two other ones, same model as ours and they do it too.in fact she said one vibrates worse than ours.we are being told this is normal, but we know, that no vibration is normal.*tw
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. While driving at an unknown speed, the air conditioner was activated. The contact noticed water leaking onto the carpet in the front driver and passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and a dealer where it was diagnosed that the hose in the vehicle was installed incorrectly and would need to be re-installed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 20,000.
After taking two short 90 degree turns at a parking floor (4th floor), the vehicle was half way in the parking slot when it suddenly picked up speed and crashed into wire cables and a concrete post. This type of speed had happened twice in the past within three months of purchasing the car as a new vehicle (brought in jan 2010). After the 2nd such incident the vehicle was taken to the dealer. They could not duplicate the issue. The vehicle had been taken in the past for gps check as well. Subsequently the vehicle was asked to be brought in for a recall service and that was completed as well. This incident was the next time when trying to brake to come to a slow speed it picked up speed. Wrote to toyota with all details but they say that they could not duplicate the issue and the vehicle does not seem to have faults. Our concern is just that - they cannot duplicate the issue which means it can happen anytime without any warning. We are 100% sure this was not driver error and that it was identical to the past instances. Toyota expects us to drive this vehicle we believe has some form of a fault. They were not willing to drive it to and from the test location even after they say the test revealed no faults - they had it towed both ways. This is a pure safety issue and this car should not be on the road ever again. Many people can get hurt or die due to pure callousness of a vehicle manufacturer. Toyota may manufacture and design great vehicles but they should also take responsibility for any system or technical malfunctions of their vehicles. We would appreciate that your organization takes some action regarding this with toyota so that they take this car off the road. We would hate to rely on toyota's letter knowing they are acting with negligence and then sell this car to an innocent buyer.
Gasoline tank leaking.
2010 toyota rav 4.consumer writes in regards to a broken evap canister.the consumer was informed, due to the broken evap canister, the gas tank, may also need to be replaced.
At approximately 18:30 on december 27, 2011, i experienced an unintended acceleration event in my 2010 toyota rav4. I was stopping for a red light on pacific coast highway in seal beach, california at the corner of first street when i noticed it was difficult to apply the brake, and the car did not appear to want to stop. I applied the brake more forcefully and was eventually able to stop in the left hand turn lane, however the car kept lurching forward as if it wanted to break free of the brake. Having heard the widespread publicity regarding the unintended acceleration problem in toyota vehicles, and having previously experienced the problem on one occasion over a year earlier, i thought this might be the issue. I put the car into park and the engine immediately revved up to an alarming rate. I turned off the ignition in panic before i was able to look at the tachometer. However, judging by the sound and later experimentation with revving while parked, i believe the rpm must have been in the 4000-5000 range at the time of the incident. I was particularly shaken by this event because i had already had the recall service performed that was supposedly intended to address the unintended acceleration issue. This recall service was performed may 10, 2011 at desert toyota in tucson, arizona. I had experience the unintended acceleration issue once before, but it was not nearly as dramatic. I do not recall the details, but it was in southern arizona in early 2011 and my memory is that tapping the accelerator and brake pedals restored the car's operation to normal fairly quickly. I was little concerned about it happening again since the recall service had been performed.
On the day indicated below when i was driving my 2010 toyota rav4 to a store, i tried to slow down the vehicle to a left turn but it failed to drop the speed. Then i realized it probably has the problem people currently complain. So, i switched the shift to neutral position and i heard the engine surge at a very high speed for several seconds and then slowed down. I stopped the vehicle and checked the gas pedal which was not sticky. Since then, i continued to use this vehicle without same issue. I checked with my car dealer a month ago about the recall and was told that my vehicle is not included in recall list by the vin number.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav 4. While driving approximately 20 mph the gasoline tank started leaking and the gasoline odor was in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated that there was a hole in the fuel tank which needed to be repaired. The technicians stated that the vehicle hit debris which could have damaged the vehicle. The contact stated that there was no debris on the road. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 27,000.
When i drive my toyota 2010 rav4 over a significant bump or pothole, the car lunges forward/accelerates. It doesn't last long , but i certainly have not had this happen with my previous cars (vw passat wagon, ford grand cherokee,etc.).
The check engine light came on, so we took the car to the dealer.gasoline had entered the gas tank vapor recovery system and had ruined it.the dealer advised that this was due to a design issue and is in the process of installing a new, redesigned gas tank and vapor recovery system.what was troubling to me was that the vapor recovery filter tank, about 3-4 gallons of charcoal, was filled with gasoline.i believe this to have been a safety hazard worth reporting to you.
On 2 occasions, my 2009 toyota rav 4 with a serial # beginning with a "j" experienced sudden acceleration.although there was no damage on either incident, the dealership stated that there was little they could do as the recall for sudden acceleration did not apply to toyota rav 4's with a "j" serial code.i explained upon bringing the vehicle in on 2/17/10 to dch toyota, rt. 9 so., freehold, nj,, that both of my sudden acceleration cases occurred before the recall notice and that i, in fact called dch on 1/13/10 & on 1/24/10 and reported the problem.on both occasions i was told by the service department to bring the car in for service but it was not subject to recall because of the "j" serial.i did bring the car in on 2/17 and was told, after inspection, that since no sudden accel. Was experienced during the service, nothing could be done and no remedial action could be taken.my contention, and the reason for my complaint is that sudden acceleration in the rav 4 is, without a doubt, occurring in this car with a "j" serial # and should be covered by the recall and remediation should extend to this vehicle.i do believe that other "j" serial cars have been involved in accidents which causes me to further question toyota's existing recall parameters.
Told that evap canister needs replaced - costs $1,200. Told not necessary to fix, but 4wd won't work without being fixed. Acceleration randomly increases and decreases.
Left a toyota dealershipafter having service . It was raining outside i had just jumped on the highway and my 4 wheel drive check engine light and a third light all came on. I then drove to autozone i was told that i needed a 02 sensor. But i had just left the toyota dealership and was told there was no problems with my vehicle. I read a post on your website and with the same concern and decided to add my complaint. I will be taking my car back to the dealership on friday.
A few days ago, i turned on my vehicle and saw three lights, check engine, electronic stability control, and 4wd.i took my vehicle into the toyota dealer, which diagnosed my problem as water in the charcoal canister that is part of the evaporative fuel system.problem is that fuel vapors can now accumulated in and about the vehicle.the dealer checked with toyota to see if it would pay for the repair.they wouldn't.the total parts to fix this problem cost about $1000, and the 3 hrs' labor is over $500.i was shocked.but shock turned to outrage when i saw, among the parts, a $14 part to cover the canister and prevent water on the road from contaminating and ruining the replacement charcoal canister.why didn't toyota inform me of this before?i would have spent $14 plus an hr's labor to install this cover to avoid a $1500-1600 repair.i called toyota and asked why they wouldn't cover this repair. They said because my car has 64,000 miles.this is absurd.this is a manufacturing/design defect that toyota should cover, but toyota refuses to do so, unless they get more complaints, according to the toyota rep with whom i spoke.so here's one complaint.what with accelerator problems, stabilizer problems, power window problems, and i can't recall what else they've recalled on this vehicle, now i have to add a charcoal canister that wasn't adequately protected from road water at the time of manufacture.it's like i bought this vehicle before toyota was done building it, and the completion of manufacturing has taken 5+ yrs!
Dealer says that charcoal cannister, which is part of evaporative system, has failed by allowing water to ruin charcoal.wants $1500 to repair.says tsb for this doesn't cover my vehicle due to mileage (would be covered in ca).fuel fumes can accumulate if this is not repaired.
I was on the freeway and entering a freeway ramp to another freeway in a turn and i let my foot off the gas and the throttle stuck and actually my car began to speed up on its own! my foot was not the gas at the time i let it for a sec and than it was like i slammed on the gas going into the turn on the ramp it scared the hell out of me its the first something like that happen to me. It sped up from 65 to around 68 and than it was off to the races so i hit gas pedal and than the breaks and it started to slow down i was at the turn of the ramp witch didnt help it was really bad for a second i was like what the helland when i noticed i made sure my foot was not on the gas and than it accelerated even more!!!
In october of 2018 paid to have the charcoal cannister replaced at a cost of $1500..now the same trouble codes are in the system, requiring rerplacement of cannister again. I found tsb 009809 from toyota cocerning water in the evaporative emissions system.problem occured when started engine at home.
In the past 4 years the charcoal canister and purge valve has gone bad. Why does the have to be replaced so often? i'm on a fixed income and can't afford to replace this every four years, then i bought this vehicle good faith.
I bought the car 8/31/2010. The car always jumped for no reason. Henderickson toyota said nothing was wrong. I saw 2010 rav4 was involved in a lawsuit that toyota corporation lost in 2013. I was never notified. The car was rpaired for a floor mat problem, but not the motor jump. I sold the car because the car was in 2015 because it had a second major problem with poor control of backend.
When i slow down to approach a stop sign or wait to make a turn on a city street, the car stalls. It happens with left hand and right hand turns. I have to put it in park and start it again. It has happened over weeks. I put 3/4 of a tank of premium gas to see if that helped and it stalled on the way home. It can stall 3-4 times in a day or not at all. The cause is unknown. I brought it to a private mechanic shop and they could not find a cause. I notice a 'rattling' noise now when i start the car. I am afraid that i may turn in front of a car and stall so that the car will not accelerate when i expect it to.
April 2014: at approximately 50,000 miles, check engine light and stability controls on dash while driving.dealer informs that there is a charcoal canister malfunction and the part needs to be replaced. Dealer performed repair and replacement of toyota parts. Paid ~$900.february 2016: same lights on dash while driving.take to the dealer and the error codes indicate the charcoal canister needs to be replaced again.estimate $1020.the part is no longer under 12-month warranty as it was replaced 20 months ago.
When driving the vehicle at approximately 40-50 mph, in 4th gear, a vibration or shudder is felt in the transmission. It is a slight loss of power. It can be felt intermittently as long as you are holding a constant speed. If you manually or automatically shift down it stops, but as soon as you maintain speed again it will come back. It doesn't necessary matter which roadway you are driving on. From my understanding there is a malfunction in the torque converter. A "lock-up clutch" design flaw in the damper plate and springs. This is already a known issue for some models and recalls have been issued. It is becoming a bigger, more wide spread issue and the recall needs to be expanded to include all models with this problem.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact noticed rodents inside of the vehicle. The rodents also caused damage to the air filter which was replaced. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer three times for the same problem. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 4,000. Updated 5/7/13updated 05/15/2013
With a totally dead battery you cannot unlock the rear door with the remote entry, and there is no key in the door to allow you to unlock the rear hatch door, where your jumper cables would be stored.thus your jumper cables are not accessible for your use, unless you climb over the rear seats and manage to life the floor panel and retrieve the cables.poor design and could be a serious safety issue under some conditions.
2010 rav 4 accelerator stuck going into reverse with the right foot securely on the brake pedal.placed car in park and the car hit red line 7000rpm. Looking at the accelerator pedal, there is nothing touching the pedal.the only way to stop the acceleration problem is to shut engine off.stuckecm computer.
To whom concernhi, my name is [xxx]. I have a disconcerting and disappointing story to tell about buying a new toyota.my friend purchased a 2010 toyota rav4 5-door 4x2 suv ltd on 3/20/2010 and on 3/27/2010 the vehicle failed. The car hesitated to advance and after 2 or 3 more tries did not responded at all. So my friend called the dealer to have the dealer pick up the car. She was interested in knowing what was wrong with her new car. The car was picked up the same day 3/27/2010.on march 29, she called the dealer to find out about her new car?s problem, and the salesman ([xxx] ) told her they do not know what the problem was, but [xxx] said, ?the car needs a new engine?. She loves the rav4 and was convinced to ask for another rav4, same model, same price; just another rav4?? sounds fair, sounds easy, for her.now, my friend has no choice but to ask for no less than her money back. Her experienced has opened my eyes to the way that the toyota dealership takes advantage of their customers. More people will know about this story and i know that is only one of many stories you hear, but i hope you will learn a lesson from this story. Customer service can either help or hinder your business and in this case bad customer service turned away a loyal toyota customer who wanted nothing less but to drive her brand new rav4. Toyota vehicles experiencing problems with rear differential due to design problem. Mine has both rear seals leaking and will cost hundreds of dollars to repair at toyota dealership. Breather plug gets clogged and pressure build up causes leaks. If not repaired, differential can potentially cease and cause an accident.
I leased a 2010 toyota rav4 in march 2010. The crossover has been okay. One problem being when i am on an incline, say at a stop light and take my foot off the brake and apply the gas the rav4 rolls back like its a standard. I have asked several times when i have brought the rav4 in for service. The service dept tells me the feather both the gas and brake until i am over the incline. I spoke to several rav4 owners from 2006 thru 2011 and it seems to me its only the 2.5 litre 4cyl that has the roll back. Thank god i have not rolled into anyone, but feathering the gas all the time is to much.
While changing the oil, inoticed a leak from the rear axle. I had the axle seals replaced at a local repair shop. Later i received a recall but the recall was only for a specific noise not for the faulty rear axle seals.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer (copeland toyota, 1554 main st, brockton, ma 02301) where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 137,000.
2010 toyota rav 4.consumer writes in regards to vehicle drive gear issues.the consumer stated the vehicle was keyless. When he parked the vehicle, with the gear still in drive, he was able to turn the engine off, which meant, if parked on the slightest incline, the vehicle could possibly roll backwards. The consumer stated it happened once, but luckily no one was behind him. A technician from toyota informed him, it was normal.
We were pulling out of a paralllel parking spot on a residential streetvery slowly. Then suddenly the car unintendedly accelerated very fast and hit another parked car on the other side of the street. It seemed like the car took control on its own as we were pulling out very slowly.
Yesterday my car drove perfectly fine.today, i am pulling out of my driveway trying to accelerate, there was a delayed reaction, then a thud and the car jumped forward at the time of the thud.it did it again when i pulled into a parking space, propelling the vehicle forward suddently after the thud was heard again. When i put it in reverse, the thud was heard again, not as loud.all of my driving was on city streets, but due to the sudden lerching forward after the thud sound, i kept a very wise distance from vehicles in front of me.this happened both in stationary and also while in motion.it feels like a transmission problem, although i have read about issues with ecm solenoids.this car has record of being serviced on a very regular basis.it has about 148k miles on it.
Whining sound, possibly transmission. The sound happens when i accelerate or maintain a certain speed (25-45 mph). When i remove my foot off the pedal the sound goes away so it's only temporary. I can't really hear it on the highway but when i'm on the small roads i sometimes do. The vehicle is only 8 years old with slightly less of 100, 000 miles. The vehicle should be able to run a few more years.
While driving vehicle began to shake or "wobble" . Upon inspection was found to be tire which was uneven in wear. Replaced tire and after a short time was found not to be the problem. Upon inspection was found seals on rear differential leaking . Closer inspection found rear suspension, tie rod loose. This we believe is due to rear suspension parts being faulty. Parts are original. At this time we are being told that it is not covered under any vehicle warranty or recall. This is a major safety problem as it caused vehicle to loose complete control. At this same time vehicle rear differential also began to give off a "whine" sound. The tires have been worn unevenly due to rear suspension being loose causing this failure.our concerns are that we are being told there is no warranty or recall to correct or protect anyone owning and driving without knowledge of this problem. It should be known that tires worn uneven were on & from rear of vehicle. No front tires had been worn unevenly with this incident.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated when vehicle was parked on a slope, the vehicle rolled backward into a fence. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for a diagnostic test, who was unable to diagnose the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.
Computer failure on my 2002 toyota rav4. Transmission failure.
The vehicle jerks visciously when shifting. This occurs when driving up a hill and the transmission down shifts from 3rd to 2ndorwhen accelerating from 1st to 2nd when turning a corner or when going in reverse while traversing up any type of in line. This is a sporadic problem that began occurring at around 93,000 miles. The vehicle now has 128,000. I initially thought that the transmission was failing but i thought the mileage was way too low for that type of problem to occur. I had the transmission fluid changed at 94,000 miles. This action made no difference. Recently i began researching on the web and have found information pointing to the ecm (electronic control module). Either solution is an extremely costly repair.i am interested to know if there are other people who are experiencing similar problems and if toyota has any responsibility for repairs?

On 07/06/14 the car suddenly and unexpectedly accelerated at full throttle while stopped . Car moved toward motorcycle stopped ahead of me at the traffic signal even though i was pushing hard on the brake. If i had not turned the ignition off i would have hit the motorcycle. Today 08/06/14 at aprox. 20 mph the same thing happened. As i was slowing for a traffic light, the car accelerator went to full throttle uncontrollably running through a red light.

I was driving my 2007 toyota rav4 up a mountain dirt road in worlds end state park in sullivan county pa. I was traveling approx 15 mph. I hit the brake to slow down when the throttle suddenly went to full acceleration. I pressed hard on the brake, put the transmission into neutral, stopped the vehicle and shut off the engine. I pressed the gas pedal a few times and restarted the engine. Everything seemed fine. The same thing occurred on the way down the mountain. This time i was in low gear and the brake would not hold the vehicle. It took me a few seconds to shift into neutral and shut off the engine. The road took a sharp turn to the right, which is why i hit the brake to slow down, and i just managed to stop short of going off the road into the trees. I had no further problems on my trip home. I took the car to the toyota dealer when i returned but they could find no problem. The only fault code in the system was for the battery which was ok when they checked it.
On august 3, 2011 everything was normal.i stopped for fuel. I then started the engine and shifted into drive with my foot on the brake.the engine began racing and making loud strange noises.the steering wheel was shaking in my hands. I immediately shifted back into park and turned the engine off.i restarted the engine and everything was normal.on august 4, 2011, i took the rav4 to quality imports, a dealer in fort walton beach, florida.the dealer wanted me to see toyota's side of the story. With considerable effort on his part, he uninstalled the very heavy semi rigid aftermarket rubber mat and reinstalled it to rest on the accelerator.he then said, "this is probably what happened."this very heavy semi rigid floor mat is precisely contoured to snugly fit in the exact contours of the floor board.there is no room for this mat to move, because it fits so snugly within the confines of the molded contours. The rubber mat has never moved in over 6,000 miles of driving.i have a clear soft vinyl mat on top of the heavy semi rigid mat; the vinyl mat that has never been any trouble.also, the accelerator pedal hangs above the floor mat thus making it impossible for a mat to slide on top ofthe pedal. The dealer then instructed me leave and obtain instructions by calling the toyota customer experience center.i called 800 331 4331; i was given case number 1108040789.the toyota representative asked me how fast i was going.i told him i was standing still with my foot on the brake; he responded, "i guess you don't know how fast you were going."he instructed me to wait for a case worker to contact me.
Toyota rav4 base awd unintended acceleration. When attempting to stop at a traffic light, the car slowed down but kept moving forward even with the brake pressed all the way to the floor.i shifted to neutral, and the engine all of sudden revved up to a high rpm and made a loud roar even though the accelerator pedal was not pressed.
We were driving a 2010 toyota rav4 limited with approximately 68 miles and with an automatic transmission. We were stopped on an incline with the vehicle in drive.when the brake was released and before the gas pedal could be pressed, the vehicle rolled backwards as if in neutral almost hitting a vehicle approaching from the rear.the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the problem was duplicated more than once on an incline.the dealer(service supervisor) stated that this is a normal operation with the automatic transmission and further stated that the left foot should be kept on the brake or the hand brake applied while stopped on an incline. I felt that the vehicle was unsafe to drive and since the vehicle was only two days old, they took back the vehicle. We were told that toyota offers a hill assist item on certain rav4's with a v6 and 4cyl rav4's with a third row seat only.in the vehicle hand book there are no cautions or warnings about the vehicle rolling backwards while stopped on an incline and in driveor any other warnings or cautions about the transmission that i could find.
While driving my toyota rav 4 build sep/2010, compliance oct 2010 at 20km per hour, automatic, i was beginning to brake gently and move into neutral when the engine rev up at 8000 rpm. I completed the maneuver to put the car in neutral (within milliseconds of the problem happening) and after watching the clock showing 8000 rpm for 1 second i turned the car off. I did not suffer any injuries, but i have bad dreams about it. My wife was in the car at the time and she also witnesses the event. Toyota is investigating...
Purchased new toyota rav4 2010 4-cylinder model in february. When at a stop on mild incline (driveway made of woodchips...good traction), the vehicle rolls backwards when foot is off the brake pedal. Dealership insisted this is normal for these vehicles and demonstrated this anomaly with another rav4 to prove it. The engine doesn't produce enough torque for the transmission during idle to engage the converter apparently, especially when the transmission is hot. No one told me of this problem during sales. A 'hill-assist" option is available that i did not know about. This merely prolongs the braking when switching from brake to accelerator pedal when the pressure changes. Since i didn't know about all of this stuff when purchasing, the first time it happened i almost rammed into the truck behind me. Then when stepping on the gas the vehicle lunges forward in response to the rpm change. This is a hazard to the unwitting buyer and needs to be clearly discussed with all buyers.the dealership blows off this incident as 'normal' for this car. What they don't say is that it is bad engineering...that the car computer should raise rpms until the transmission is working properly on incline. The software cannot be changed so the car is considered 'normal'. I was disgusted with the explanations, even from a mechanic there i respect, he said this is 'how they are'.
Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)i am writing because i just experienced sudden acceleration in reverse in my new 2010 toyota rav4, 6 cylinder.this is a vehicle i was told by the dealer was not affected by the recall.here are the details:i purchased the vehicle about a month ago from irwin toyota in new hampshire with vin#[xxx] .i had contacted the dealer before the car was delivered to see what the recall meant for me.they said that the vehicle was made in japan and was not affected by the recall. On february 17th i put the rav4 into reverse to back down my driveway.i was cutting the wheel to the left to make a reverse k-turn when it began accelerating vigorously in reverse.i did not have my foot on the gas because it was idling in reverse down a 7% grade.the engine raced way up and it took all my leg power to bring it to a stop.i did stop the car just before hitting a tree on the side of my driveway.i had my wife and my infant son in the car and they were both terrified.when i called the dealer the service manager said he would be happy to look at it, but that it was probably 'high idle'.i have degree in physics and electrical engineering and i own a company that builds acceleration sensors for vehicles.this car has a serious, potentially deadly problem with one of its sensors or with electrical interference causing the computer to misinterpret the sensor data.there is no way a dealer is going to find this, let alone fix it.what can i do at this point?
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle rolled backwards when he removed his foot off of the brake pedal in the drive position. The contact stated that the vehicle responded as if it was in neutral. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the failure was normal. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The current and failure mileage was approximately 6,200.
2010 rav4 limited delivered 10/26/09. Constant transmission whine at speeds from 10 mph to 45mph. This whine appeared immediately after taking delivery of the vehicle.took it back to dealer who said this happens in all rav4's. Wrote letter to president of toyota usa on 12/17/09 and have received no response. Called him also, and no response yet.
I bought a 2010 rav 4 2w drive 4 cyl automatic from nwa toyota on dec18 2009. Immediately discovered that when starting off from a stop(brake on) and going to the accelerator the vehicle is in a freewheel mood. Even on just a modest incline dive ways, exits onto streets and highways, or anywhere except dead level ,this vehicle rolls backward with no drag whatsoever, at first quite alarming and after a couple more incidentsi deem it very dangerous and really not normal. Took it back to the dealer and from the salesman servicemanager costumer relations person and g.m. All agreed that it was unsafe "an engineering defect " but all the new toyotas are like that"i was told that hadi purchased a more expensive model that it would have a "hill holding feature" and eliminate the problem .however my 25000 rav4 does not have that feature available . It gets better. There suggesting for me were and i quote service manager said use your handbrake when putting it in d from any stop on a incline" due to no "stall speed "drive two footed on any incline' or the salesman suggestion , "put it in park on the incline and then go to drive.like what? i was a equipt.operator for 50 yrs and have never seen a more convoluted way of screwing up something a simple as a push and go automatic transmission (also the reason i bought it .we traded in a 5 speed car in to get away from all the . This is worse as you don't expect a automatic to roll backwards when you are simply going from stop to go. They can't possibly rent this model as it would take 2 days to explain its idiosyncrasies plus all the wrecks that would happen when it rolls back on the uninformed.i'm sure you will be getting more complaints on this issue so i'll give it a rest.
Vehicle was at the stop sign for the high speed train. The vehicle was rearended by a truck. Brakes were applied, the brakes failed and the vehicle continued to go towards the railroad crossing with approach of the high speed train.the driver in desperation made a u-turn still trying to stop the vehicle.in desperation the gear was shifted to park and the key removed, the vehicle continued to roll jumped the curb and fortunately ran into tree which stopped the vehicle. The vehicle body damage is being repaired.
After 148,603 miles on my 2002 rav4, the transmission began shifting back & forth between 1st & 2nd gear with violent shaking. Shifting from drive to reverse also caused violent/loud clunking. A scanner was used to retrieve trouble codes which yielded a p0755 code (shift solenoid malfunction).upon research on various toyota rav4 forums i found many others with same symptoms.
My vehicle is a 2010 toyota rav4-v6 with automatic transmission.while coasting or maintain a low speed of approximately 5mph, i press the accelerator and the vehicle hesitates about 3-5 seconds.during the hesitation, the engine revs high and the car does not accelerate.at the end of the hesitation, the transmission goes into gear with a thud and a jerk to the car.i was involved in three near-miss accidents while trying to merge into traffic since the vehicle would not move for the 3-5 seconds of hesitation.i searched the problem on the internet and found similar problems with other rav4 owners.
2 days after the purchase of our 2010 rav4 my wife discovered when stopped on an incline, the vehicle rolls backward when foot is removed from brake, stepping on throttle to correct it causes the vehicle to surge forward.service dept. Said just use two feet to drive.
I have a 2010 toyota rav 4, v6. Awd.several times i have inadvertently accelerated when i attempted to apply the brakes. Each time i was able to determine that the cause of the unintended acceleration was that my foot was overlapping the brake pedal and was also depressing the acceleration pedal at the same time. The acceleration was overriding the braking until i released pressure on the brake pedal.this is a very serious safety issue!last week i almost killed a mother and her young child during a parking situation.i was traveling at about 5mph when i intended to come to a slow stop outside a nose in parking spot.the young mother was tieing the shoestrings of her youngster near the outside middle of the parking spot i intended to use.my car was traveling directly toward her when i slowly depressed the brake pedal. The car started to accelerate!i immediately recognized the problem and stopped the car by shifting my right foot to the left which allowed me to apply pressure to the brake pedal without simultaneously depressing the accelerator pedal!we stopped about 8 feet from the mother and child.had i not experienced this problem several times beforeand therefore had known how to correct it,my response would have been to depress the brake pedal even more. I could easily have driven over the mother and her child!i am aware that toyota has a recall on many of its products because of unintentional accelerations; but i am unaware of any investigations the focus on the cause of my near-fatal incident.i am certain that some of the accidents reported on the rav 4, v6 are attributable to the lack of adequate separation between the brake and accelerator pedals!this must be investigated and fixed immediately!i reported this incident to toyota usa gilbert dyer , torrence ca on june 4, 2010 with the request that he forward it to the highest level at toyota. It demands immediate attention!!!!

As a note the airbag light is staying lit at instrument cluster and seat belts did not lock in place. We are awaiting a visit from the insurance adjuster.
I am filing a complaint against butler toyota located at 9419 aronson dr., indianapolis, in 46240.this is the address of the service department.we have been calling them for two years to try and get the recalls taken care on our car. Each time we have called they say they do not have the parts in stock.i just tried to schedule an appointment with the service department again today and was given the same story.

I received an electronic message from nhtsa that my vehicle was subject to a manufacturer's recall (i.e., defective seat heater ). However, that message was in error after i checked with the manufacturer as well as after contacting the nhtsa office.
The front headrests on this vehicle, both passenger-side and driver-side, are situated much too far forward.the headrest pushes on the middle of one's head, causing a chin-forward / head-forward posture, which is unnatural and ergonomically incorrect.there are numerous forums and message boards on the internet on which drivers of newer vehicles such as this one are complaining about extreme pain being caused by these headrests.in my case in particular, the malpositioning of the headrest is causing vertebrae in my neck, along with my upper two ribs, to be pushed out of place.this condition causes extreme pain, headaches, and fatigue.additionally, the middle of the head being pushed so far forward, and no support for the neck, would seem to me a very dangerous combination if a high-speed crash were to occur.this positioning seems that it would be extremely dangerous to the neck vertebrae.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the front driver side seat cushion heater generated excessive heat. The contact was not injured. The contact mentioned that the front passenger side seat back and heating element were both replaced previously due to the heating element generating inadequate heat. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v743000 (seats). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,815.
Car accelerated ahead while pulling up to a stop sign.the harder i applied the brakes.... The more it tried to surge ahead.finally got it stopped.the same thing happened to my wife today.she was parking the car and when she touched the brake pedal, the car surged ahead on her.she finally also got it stopped but it scared her.when it happens, the brake pedal feels really hard and the motor accelerates even though the brake pedal is being pushed and not the gas pedal.i called my local dealer and they are going to get it in tomorrow to check it out.

I was on a test drive to buy the vehicle..it was very cold out, teens, but no ice on road. Riding along 20-25mph slowing down for red light--applied break -- seemedcar was still acceleratinghad to stand on breaks to stop a couple of feet from car in front.returned to dealership and told them , they looked up vin said there as no recall.i saw on this site there is a very similar issue that there was a recall for.should toyota take acloser look at this vehicle?
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav-4. The contact stated while driving at 40 mph and approaching an exit ramp off the highway, the contact stated they were depressing on the brake pedal but the vehicle did not slow down and continued to accelerate which caused the vehicle to hit a fence. The vehicle came to a stop and the contact shifted to park, the contact was able to restart, and continued to drive the vehicle to their residence. The air bags did not deploy and no warning light illuminated. There were no injured reported. No police report was filed. The contact had the vehicle towed to local dealer automax car sales (9541 nw 27th ave, miami, fl 33147 phone: (305) 835-2222) who stated they repaired and replaced the brakes and control arms on the vehicle however the failure persisted with screeching noise coming from the brakes. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 125,000.
I was backing up, turning around in a driveway. When i attempted to stop, something interfered with my ability to depress the brake pedal, resulting in a low-speed (less than 2 mph) collision with a shed, minor damage to the shed and damage to the rear bumper cover of the vehicle. This is the third or fourth time i have had this problem (once at high speed approaching a red traffic signal, i could not stop prior to the intersection even with the emergency brake), but the first involving a collision. I investigated this (not the first time i have tried) and found a bracket which appears to be part of the brake pedal mounting that contacts my toes when my foot is toward the left side of the brake pedal and my heel is greater than about 0.5 in. Off the floor (i wear a size 12 shoe). When this happens, i am unable to apply pressure to the brake pedal.*dtthe consumer provided photos of the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. While driving approximately 20 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and it traveled all the way down to the floorboard. The contact shifted into neutral and the vehicle stopped. The contact stated that this was the third time the brake system was repaired by west herr toyota of orchard park (4141 southwestern blvd, orchard park, ny 14127). The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 56,482.
I started complaining about the scrubbing noise that the brakes had started making ,so they replaced the brakes and only charged forty dollars.so on july of the same year, the car started making the scrubbing noise again, so again they replaced them again,it lasted for about a year, and the scrubbing noise came back.the car was once again looked at and the mechanic said that there was a piece by the brake that had rusted together so for this car to be new, why were there parts rusting ,maybe it was sitting in water i asked, so the general manager was bought out because i just could not see paying what they said the cost was but being a woman i think that they pulled a fast one on me and the repair was something like seven hundred dollars. I think that lasted for a couple of years so when it came back i took it to goodyear and the mechanic said that the rotors were down and needed to be replaced. To make a long story short i just shelled out two-thousand- twenty two dollars for rotors and other repairs that the toyota company said they had done and didn't do at all.
I was driving up to traffic light to stop and i went to brake and my brake pedal seized up! it felt like it got stuck and would not engage, causing me to have no brakes and i hit car in front of me. I had no brakes and i could not stop! i have been cited for hitting someone from behind and there was nothing i could do to stop! i believe my abs- antilock braking system some how caused my brakes to seize up and become inoperable.
At some time between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm on november 5, 2016 my wife and i were driving my 2010 rav4 south on county route 561 in voorhees township, nj on the inside lane of this 4 lane highway when i lightly pressed the brake pedal to slow from 45 mph to the lowered speed limit.suddenly, and without warning, the left rear wheel locked up tight, causing the vehicle to swerve abruptly into and across two lanes of oncoming traffic, hitting the curb smartly, followed by a similar action by the light trailer we were towing.no one was injured but if this had happened during rush hour, serious injuries or fatalities might have occurred.the left rear wheel remained locked as the vehicle was winched up onto the bed of the flat bed transport truck. More pieces of the brake fell out during this operation.when an attempt was made to unload the car at the dealership the locked wheel prevented it from rolling off the truck, so after unhooking the winch cable, the tow truck driver started the car and attempted to back it off.during this attempt more pieces of the brake fell out, there occurred a loud 'bang,' and the left rear wheel assumed an angle that was non-parallel with the car, indicating to me that this last action had seriously damaged the suspension system.i requested of the dealership that a corporate investigation of this failure be made. They found the brakes to be in working order? nhtsa is not interested in investigation beyond taking my complaint.our tow truck driver told me that his father-in-law had experienced the exact same type of failure in his 2013 rav4 but didn't report it to the nhtsa, settling instead for a reduced price for the repair.no such offer made to me from toyota. Car has been at dealer for over 3 months.can't find independent forensic investigation to look at it.afraid to drive car without know what caused failure.
I was driving on the freeway. The traffic was stop and go. I was going 10mph when the truck in front of me stopped.i applied my brakes and nothing happened. I pushed the brakes to the floor with both feet and still nothing. I hit the back of the truck in front of me.no damage to the truck just my front end.i got over to the shoulder and the brakes worked fine. I noticed that when i was braking my abs light was flashing. I took it to the dealership.they said that they had never heard of that happening.but was i aware of a service recall on the smart stop technology. I said no i haven't.i was told that the "recall came out in 2013"funny because my car had been to the dealership in 2014.why was it not taken care of then.i have read that others have had this similar problem and where told that there is nothing wrong.i am very thankful i was only going 10 mph or it could of been alot worse.
The contact informed the dealer who stated that, due to the age of the vehicle, the fuel injectors may need cleaning or replacing. The vehicle was not officially diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,500.
I had been driving app. 10 minutes in snow covered road conditions when i was approaching an intersection with traffic stopped for a red light. As i applied the brake to ease into a stop, the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably. I was in the center lane with stopped vehicles in front of me. I had to exert hard force on the brake pedal to finally bring my vehicle to a stop. The engine was at least over 4000rpms on the tachometer. When traffic started moving again, i eased off the brake pedal and slowly applied gas and eased over in to the right(curb) lane. I stayed slow at about 15-20 mph and felt an acceleration again, but was able to brake successfully. I then turned right into the first available parking lot to gain composure before continuing on. I continued home at a safe rate of speed ( under 35mph). In the past 2 years there have been 3 other occurrences of acceleration when braking but never to this extreme.
I was leaving my home in my 2010 toyota rav4. I put the car in reverse and it instantly began to accelerate at a very high speed. I immediately pressed down on the brakes as hard as i could. However nothing occurred the car continued to reverse rapidly. I shifted into neutral but it was a small space and by then i was near the stone fixture which the vehicle hit. The fixture which was solid stone was in the ground, it was uprooted by the vehicle. In order for an object like this to be uprooted a great deal of speed would need to be involved. My driveway is on an incline and i never press on the gas pedal while reversing as the vehicle will reverse on its own due to the inclination.
Auto accident due to brake failure. The banjo bolt was loose on the right brake caliper on 2010 toyota rav 4 with 800 miles. The car could not stop when trying to stop on front of stop sign as a result the car crossed the street and hit the curb and the light pole across the street.
Just another unsatisfied, unhappy, and scared for my life toyota owner!the repair for the recall for the accelerator pedal has not fixed the problem.it takes too much effort to apply the brakes and the accelerator sticks sometimes.braking is becoming a major issue for me-i've never had to apply so much pressure before. I'm used to letting my foot off the gas, letting the car slow down itself, then gently applying the brakes as needed (mostly at stoplights so i don't have to accelerate as much when it turns green). The car really doesn't slow down like it should, requiring me to apply unnecessary pressure to the brake to slow down. Dealer replaced the pedal or repaired it for the recall but nothing has changed.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated that when depressing the brakes, the pedal would depress into the floorboard. The contact stated that the pedal was so low that he was able to simultaneously depress the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal. The dealer test drove the vehicle and advised the contact that brake pedal was soft designed and was operating as normal.the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 500 and the current mileage was 6,000.

My rav4 was part of the recall. One, i bought my car on 1/18/10. I heard toyota filed their claim on 1/21/10. The recall was announced on 1/26/10. I waited until beginning of march for recall letter as instructed by toyota and i never received the recall letter. I contacted the dealership and was told that toyota doesn't send out recall letters and that i should come in for recall. Last saturday the pedal was fixed but there is a brake lag, meaning the car will not stop in time, you really have to put a lot of pressure to stop the vehicle. As per dealer, they don't see anything wrong with the car and when i asked them can they tell me if the car is safe to drive they told me that toyota can not make those guarantees. I don't feel safe driving this car and want to return it since as per toyota if the car was purchased/leased within 5 days of recall/production stoppage they will take it back. I contacted the dealership and they told me that i should contact toyota directly which i did and nobody is answering the phone-its always busy. On their website, it does indicate that they will work on case by case basis for take backs but nobody from toyota is willing to help. How do i proceed? can anybody help me?
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle continued to accelerate. The vehicle crashed into the rear end of another vehicle. There was no personal injury. A police report was not filed of the incident. The vehicle was able to be driven from the scene. The manufacturer was notified of the problem.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. The black box data detected that the brakes were not faulty.the vehicle had not been repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000.the consumer stated it was not the first time, she and her husband experienced brake failure, with the vehicle continuing to accelerate.the dealer informed the consumer, that an update on the brakes had not been made. The consumer stated she never received any type of notification, to have service done.
I have taken my 1 month certified newly purchased vehicle for what i describe as brakes/suspension problems. According to the dealership, they cannot find any problems with the car. I have already stated that i drive with my grandkids in the car. They seem to ignore and find nothing wrong with the vehicle. I feel there is definitely a safety issue!
The contact owns a2010 toyota rav4 . While driving 25 mph, the contact applied the brakes and there was minimal vibration causing the brakes not to engage. The contact then shifted into neutral gear when the engine rpms increased. The vehicle lunged forward when the contact applied the brakes with extreme force and stopped the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that they would perform a diagnostic test and let him know what caused the failure to occur. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 1900.the consumer stated he was approaching a traffic light at an intersection. His speed was 25 mph, going up a grade. The road conditions were dry. When he applied the brake pedal, it was soft with a fine vibration. Updated evoq 09/22/10updated 10/21/10. *ljupdated 10/25/10
As i applied the brakes to stop from 45 mph, the car continued to move at the same speed.i increased pressure on the the brake pedal, but the car did not slow down.finally, after about three seconds, the car seemed to downshift, and the brakes engaged.i ended up halfway through the intersection.the conditions were warm and dry, and the traffic was light.this is a stock car with no modifications.we had already taken the car in for the recall adjustments to the accelerator pedal and the floor mats as directed by toyota in 2010 and 2011.at the time of the incident, it seemed to me that the lack of braking was not mechanical, but electronic.it seemed that the brakes were locked out while the car continued to drive forward at the same speed.when the car downshifted and revved a little, the brakes suddenly came back online, and we came to a stop.this is the first time we have had a problem like this.we will contact toyota and see what they advise.
Letter from constituent regarding as issue with her toyota 2010 rav 4 - 4cyl and fordham toyota service and parts center; she thinks the vehicle should be inspected, the matter should be investigated and provided and appropriate remedy.the consumer and her husband took the vehicle to the dealer for a brake inspection.the dealer inspected the vehicle, and stated the front brake pads needed to be replaced.they replaced the front pads and resurfaced the rotors. The consumer stated after retrieving the vehicle from the dealer, her husband then took possession of the vehicle.as her husband was driving, he heard a cracking sound coming from under the vehicle, and all of a sudden, when he applied the brake pedal, the brakes did not respond.her husband was a able to maneuver the vehicle and brought it to a stop. Once he exited the vehicle, the consumer discovered a brake pad behind the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. An inspection revealed a bolt holding the brake pad had cracked.
While driving in heavy traffic on city side street, vehicle in front stopped, i attempted to do the same, but unsuccessfully. My vehicle was a rental and rental company replaced it with an identical vehicle.subsequent experimentation with said replacement showed what i believe is a weakness in the electronically controlled brake system.with one application of the brake pedal a certain percentage of brake power is available, with a closely followed second application, the percentage of available braking power is increased, after a third, even more.the braking power available after the first application is low, even with full pedal application.this constitutes a hazard in the event of a need for full braking power.it is most likely that a person encountering a situation as i found myself in would do what i did, i.e. Apply maximum pressure to the brake pedal only to find that because of the low available braking power the vehicle, person, or animal would not escape damage or injury.
I bought the 2010 toyota rav4 this july. The car was fine until today, september 19th, 2010.today at 11:45 am, i was braking as i approached the red light going at 25mph. When i pressed the brake the car continued to accelerate. I pressed the brake even harder, the car jumped the light, and even though the car did slowed, i had to slam in order to come to a complete halt. I then pulled over and restarted the engine. Although there was no accident i was very scared.at 4:30 pm the same day, i just exited the highway and was coming to the red light. I was braking at 25mph, yet the car continued to accelerate. I had to slam the brakes extremely hard and although it did come to a complete stop, i heard the engine revving. Again i was very scared. No accidents occurred.
I was going about 4 mph around a grocery store parking lot and the vehicle made a loud roaring noise and accelerated.i was unable to stop accept for a concrete post in the parking lot.i had no control and no brakes.this incident has left me without a vehicle for use.this is detrimental to my daily routine including the care of my 93 year old father who has doctors appointments and other needs that require a vehicle.i have only had the car for 6 months and cannot afford to make car payments or pay $40.00 for car rental.it will be over 3 weeks before the dealership will check electronic box/the car and was told that it would be an additional 3 weeks before i would be contacted.i will not be given a rental until proof is determined.
My new 2010 toyota rav4 makes squeaking noise from the rear wheel while i apply brake after a cold start. The noise goes away after applying the brakes couple of times.
S10 appropriate handling- letter to the secretary from re copy of letter addressed to mr james lentz, president and ceo of toyota motor sales, regarding safety problems with the 2010 toyota rav 4 *tgwthe consumer stated when there was snow on the street with slipper road conditions, the abs engaged, which made the brakes inoperable. The consumer stated she has been to the dealer on several occasions, only to be told there was nothing wrong.there have been several situations, where the vehicle would not stop when the abs engaged. On one occasion, the consumer had to push the brake all the way to the floor and eventually landed in the middle intersection of oncoming traffic. The second time, she almost rear ended another vehicle, when suddenly the vehicle accelerated when she applied the brake. The only way, she was able to stop the vehicle, was by turning into another lane which caused the abs to go off which rendered the brakes to work again.

I started the rav 4 and began backing out of the parking place. I immediately noticed the steering was very hard. I restarted the car a couple of times with no change and then called for a tow to the dealership. Arriving at the dealership i went to pull the car into the service bay and the steering was normal again. They checked the onboard computer and found an error code indicating that the steering computer had a problem and i paid $1,000 to replace it, as i was afraid of the steering going out again while driving the car.

The electronic power steering (eps) failed on my 2010 toyota rav-4 today on the interstate and the resulting crash almost killed me.i'm 53 years old, my rav-4 has always had routine maintenance and is in good condition, not abused and always well taken care of.without warning today while traveling at about 60 mph on the interstate the steering wheel started vibrating and sharply turning left-right-left-right for about 5 seconds with a grinding and shaking noise in the front end of the vehicle.i used all my strength to keep the car pointed straight while trying to slow down and not cause an accident. Then the car sharply veered left and hit (hard) a 5-foot concrete barrier wall separating the interstate lanes.as this was occurringa red triangle warning light came on the dashboard with an exclamation point.after the accident i looked in the toyota rav-4 owners manual, and it indicated an "eps malfunction". The vehicle sustained major damage (insurance estimate still pending, probably about $8,000).more importantly however, i believe if the concrete retaining wall hadn't been there my vehicle would have turned left, rolled over into approaching on-coming traffic from the other side of the interstate and potentially caused much greater safety risk to on-coming traffic and damage.it was very fortunate that the wall was there.i sustained back injuries.there was also a witness in back of me who saw the entire thing with the erratic steering and resulting accident; he stopped to ensure was ok and he called 911 and made a statement to the police.this was not due to tires (they are new), or poor road conditions (this part of the interstate was newly refinished and smooth).it was clearly a mechanical failure of the toyota eps.mailout customer request 11/05/14*lj....updated 11/18/14 updated 8/12/2015

My car is toyota 2010 rv4 sport.this morning when i start engine, the symbols of "electric power steering system warning light , abs, airbag, breaker , slip indicator warning light" on dashboard all lights on. That's never happen before. And when i was driving, the steering wheel become heavy. I was so shocked and go to a local auto service store, they check and told me this is electronic steering motor issue. They adjusted and wheel back to normal now, but they also mention they can not guarantee the same situationwill be back or not. And they recommend me try to avoid drive on freeway ( but this is impossible if you live in california). I was told the same problem happen on toyota recall group but not including my car's make year.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The vehicle was included in recall nhtsa campaign id number: 12v373000 (suspension: rear). The contact was dissatisfied with the remedy. The recall remedy states the tie rod nut would be inspected for looseness. The contact was concerned because if at the time of inspection the tie rod nut is not loose it can become loose in the future causing an accident. The manufacturer was made aware of the contacts concerns and stated the vehicle would have to be taken in for inspection and they would not replace the tie rod unless they found it to be loose. The contact was fearful of driving the vehicle especially because he takes frequent long trips. The contact had not experience the failure. The vehicle was not repaired.

I will upload a picture of the main part that peeling.

The paint on the roof is coming off. I researched it online, and other white rav4 owners have the exact issue. I just communicated with a local toyata dealer and toyota says it would cover 80% of the repair cost (part only, not tax). I don't think this is right. If this is the paint defect, why would i have to pay for this repair?
Paint on roof is chipping off.i have seen numerous complaints regarding this problem on both this and other websites, especially related to white vehicles.is anything going to be done about this?
When my vehicle wasstopped i was rear ended at about 15 mph. Airbags did not deploy but all bag lights illuminated.
I purchased new from toyota of warrenton, va in 2010. My car developed a paint peeling problem last winter. I have been told by an auto paint company that it is due to manufacturer malfunction. I have attempted to contact toyota of north america; i filed a complaint, met with my local dealer and discovered that corporate gives the dealer the power to delete the claim, preventing me from dealing directly with the manufacturer. In effect, i have no recourse.

I was at a rest stop and in the process of unloading from the back of a toyota rav4 2010 model.the back door was fully open.with a very light wind, the door closed and i had my hand on the upper left side of the vehicle and i was looking the other way.the door caught my hand in the door.i had to use my other hand to get the door open.this should not happen.the door should either have a warning or the hinge should not allow the door to close like that.if it had been a child, there could have been damage to the hand.
I have my rear tires wearing uneven. Took my vehicle to get an alignment but toyota has a sticker on it saying no one can adjust due to recall. Toyota apparently putapoxy on their suspension recall and now my car needs an alignment and no one can fix it. Toyota says for 850.00 they will fix it.seriously, it only needs an alignment but because they did a horrible job in the first place i am unable to maintain my own car.they refuse to fix it without charging me.how can they get away with this. This is their fault
When car is in reverse a loud squacking or sqealing also a clunking sound when brakes are applied in reverse. It is always in reverse when this almost metal on metals sound appears?

That is, even though the tire was out of alignment, the serviceman said he could not make the adjustment. He said there was a note about not being about to adjust the alignment. My tires have been wearing unevenly. Apparently, i cannot have my car aligned. I would like the nhsta to look into solutions to the "un-alignable vehicle".

When driving at about 45-50 mph lost control as vehicle starting shaking up and had a near miss crash on i 5 n driving to la. Decided to pull over and exit out and took an internal road driving at 30 mph and returned home. Upon investigation found that last safety call repair for rear suspension repair was performed adding some epoxy to tighten up and did not fix the issue. Looks like free of charge repair done by dealer is not working. I hope thorough investigation is performed as the fix seem to not work and still can cause crash.looks like the problem still persists:backgroundthe original problem involved a wobbling rear suspension arm that could, over time, rust out. That could lead to a suspension failure and, in a worst-case scenario, a crash. The maker has since discovered that the nuts it used to adjust the alignment of the rear wheels on the two vehicles during the august 2012 recall were not tightened properly.the maker has notified the nhtsa it will now have to recall the same 780,000 vehicles to inspect for damage. The nuts will now be properly tightened and toyota will take the additional step of sealing the rear lower suspension arms with an epoxy coating designed to prevent corrosion.
There is a 3rdrecall as ofseptember 2016 for arm suspension arms to bereplaced but 3 different dealerships do not have the parts to replace them.problemneeds to be corrected.
Received notification of recall due to rear lower suspension arms over 6 months ago.have been waiting for remedy from toyota which obviously never came.starting to hear noise from the side and rear of vehicle.no accident as of yet, but am not willing to wait any longer. Completely irresponsible on toyota's part . Shame on you - does someone have to get hurt or worse before you step up and fix this problem.my first and last toyota buy.
Had recall on toyota rav 4 for rear lower suspension arms.took it back to the dealer for repair, they didn't have the parts and have to reschedule when the parts come in.this is what toyota said will be done to repair it: if any rust is found on the internal threaded portion of the arm(s), the arm will be replaced. After the inspection or replacement the rear suspension alignment will be set and the arms will be sealed with an epoxy.labels will also be applied stating the arm is no longer adjustable.how are alignments going to be made to the rear suspension if they are not adjustable?is it going to be at owners expense to replace both rear lower suspension arms to realign the rear end?the dealer couldn't answer that question. They just a voided me when we pick the car up later.
I received an urgent safety recall notice from toyota in december 2013, (safety recall #coj), affecting the rear lower suspension arms (no. 1)on january 2, 2014 i had an appointment to replace tires, and made an appointment for the next available date to do the recall on june 6, 2014. On arrival for the appointment on june 6, greentree toyota in danbury, ct told me they did not have parts for the recall and would let me know when the parts came in (should be a few weeks according to the service tech) to do the recall repairs. Since then i have not received any information as of today august 6 2014.i want to file this complaint because i believe that toyota has failed or is unable to remedy the defect within a reasonable time.

Regarding nhtsa campaign: 13v383000 for 2006-2011 toyota rav4the accepted repair procedure for the above referenced nhtsa campaign is flawed.on my vehicle, the effect of permanently disabling the rear toe adjustment has greatly increased maintenance and operating costs and has potentially degraded the safety of all vehicles of this type.i have experienced greatly accelerated wear of the rubber suspension components and tires resulting in the requirement of a complete rear suspension rebuild.my concern is that other vehicles of this type that are not maintained to standards due to cost, or have had the recall reversed to mitigate the financial impact, as i have done, are operating in a potentially dangerous condition.in effect this campaign has created a cost barrier to proper maintenance of critical safety systems.i have spoken with toyota corporate, and they have no interest in investigating, revisiting or offering other solutions to this issue as the recall repair procedure was quote "approved by the government".
This is in regard to recall #16v596 for the rear suspension arm assemblies.the fix that toyota wants to implement involves encasing the adjustment sleeves in epoxy resulting in the arms no longer being adjustable.these suspension arms are adjustable so that the rear toe-in can be adjusted when an alignment is performed.the fix toyota wants to do is like welding the drivers door shut because the latch broke: it's no longer functional.

On a lovely saturday afternoon, my husband and i were returning home from a family picnic.we had just exited the highway and were traveling on a two-lane road in dover, nj.suddenly, the car was violently thrown into the left lane with on coming traffic. I thought we had a blow out but was proven wrong.my husband just missed a car by inches as he wrestled the car back into the right lane all the while more cars were coming at us.he was able to direct the car to a side street.when we got out of the car we found that the right rear suspension arm was detached and hanging loose off the car.this necessitated calling for a tow truck from the toyota dealership.our anguish and palpable terror was caused by the failure of numerous recalls to this toyota rav 4 for rear lower suspension arm to be properly & safely repaired. My husband works around the corner from the toyota dealership and upon the receipt of numerous recall notices, responsibly took the vehicle in for service each time. The most recent service visit was only a week prior to the incident.the dealership service manager called us and apologized and told us he took complete responsibility for the improper repairs. We could longer feel safe in this vehicle and traded it in immediately.

Heard a loud sound in the rear of the vehicle while driving down the road at about 30 mph.sound hear again while turning into my driveway.later, while on the highway, the vehicle seemed to be swaying.took the vehicle to the dealer for an inspection, which revealed that the rear sway bar links were loose and required replacement. One rear shock was leaking and both rear shocks needed replacement.i don't understand why sway bar link defect is not covered by the manufacturer since this is clearly a product defect with potentially serious safety consequences.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph the driver side front wheel and tire separated from the vehicle. The contact was able to maintain control and merged to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the local mechanic who stated that the failure was located on the front suspension and was caused by shredded lug nuts. The mechanic advised that the wheel, tire, lug nuts, bumper, lamp, the rotor lower control arm, hub assembly, seal, ball joint knuckles, brake pads and the axle needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 28,458 and the current mileage was not available. Updated 9/12/12
We recently received the rear lower suspension arms 2nd recall. I purchased the car used in april 2013, and was not told of a recall. I would like to understand if the first one had already been issued. Since purchasing the car it has not felt stable in the rear, ever. We brought it in once previously and they said the problem was fixed. This time i was told by one dealership the part to repair the recall was not available, and then took to a dealership 2 weeks later where they informed us we did have the rust problem. They "remedied" with epoxy, but said bring back if a "problem". The car still does not drive right or feel stable. I bought this car to drive our grandchildren and now feel extremely unsafe in this vehicle. What can be done to correct this situation, so i can feel secure in the car i am driving. I feel this is a lemon issue, as every time we drive it we are still at risk.
Rear toe allinemennt adjusters recall. The part is now being epoxied due to a toyota manufacturing flaw. Now the customers have to suffer the cost at $600.00 to have a simple allinement done on the rear of the car. The online car reviews from other customers are really pissed for being played suckers from toyota. There is a lot of loyal toyota customers going to drop toyota and go with honda. And after getting rid of these flawed cars to the open market and other people get to own flawed junk 'toyota's', their view will be the same as the current toyota owners. Then the snowball effect kicks in plus all the news about toyota's now being junk cars i'm sure will hurt the company where it should, in their bank accounts. I was a big loyal toyota owner for years, taking a lot of heat from my nascar friends for owning a toyota, wait till they hear about this, this will make their day and a i told you so will be next. Toyota has or had a chance to do it right and they are blowing it big time. 2006-2011 years have been recalled on the rav4, over 200,000 cars. At this number toyota will go down quick. I also have been through 2 sets of expensive tires due to this problem to find out it's a shoddy way for toyota to do business like this. We, the customer have been played off as stupid, i don't see it that way along with a lot of others. I hear honda's are still doing it right, if something don't happen soon, i will be finding it out myself. Oh i almost forgot, the tires now going bad way to soon is a safety issue and now very hard to afford the cost of operation for this vehicle, you think it's the shocks, they check good, shame on you toyota.

Many months ago, toyota had a safety recall related to the rear lower suspension arms... Supposedly, toyota repaired the problem, when in actually the problem was not repaired so there was a second safety recall.that was months ago. I have repetitively contacted the dealership and i am not receiving any type of communication from toyota...how can i get this fixed because i'm concerned about this problem especially since i have a one year old son. [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Rear suspension fix of previous recall will not allow rear alignment of vehicle because of the epoxy encasement.this is not acceptable.just spent 800.00 on tires and alignment only to find out the rear is out of alignment and can't be aligned due to toyota's fix (epoxy encasement).
Putting into a parking stall (at a rest stop)with foot on the brake pedal, the rav4 acceelerated at a high speed, only stopped after hitting a sign pole, still accelating ,only stopped by turning motor off with ignitoin key.the air bags did not activate with $8809 in damage .this vehicle has 2 recalls on the accelleration problem,1 on the rear suspension. Also rear middle seat belt not working and tire pressure continous to not function ather being fixed.
My complaint is about the rear suspension recall enacted in 2012.i had the recall performed at my local toyota dealer in 2014. Recently i purchased new tires at a firestone dealer and purchased a a lifetime alignment. When they performed the alignment for front and rear, both needed a little adjustment. I was informed that it could not be done and they can only adjust the front as the rear had a tag that states "only to be serviced by an authorized toyota dealer."furthermore, when toyota serviced the recall, they painted epoxy over the entire arm. Now this leaves for a very expensive fix. The recall solution made by toyota disabled the ability to adjust the toe in toe out function to align this vehicle properly. I called the toyota dealership and they told me the whole suspension needs to be redone with new parts and new kits costing 200 dollars plus labor. I believe this to be a engineering problem. The recall fix did not allow an adjustable arm and this will cause an uneven wear on my brand new tires.this is wrong and toyota feels they have no responsibility on this matter and is laying this blame on the national highway safety recalls.in my opinion another recall should be in order. People that own these vehicles should not have to pay expensive replacement charges to fix an already recalledrear suspension problem. With all the road hazards alignment problems happening all the time or anytime, an alignment is bound to occur. What can be done to get the manufactures to own up to the inadequacy of the recall solution they performed. P.s. Some of us consumers keep our cars for a lifetime of the vehicle.and i know toyota likes to brag about the longest lasting most dependable car on the road.i am one of those people that keep my cars maintained at i's maximum driving capacity.

Nothing has happened yet other than i think this has caused my tires to wear prematurely and am worried this repair is taking extremely long to get repaired. I need new tires and alignment but will need another when my repair gets done. I think toyota should repair andreplace alignment and tires for free. Tires did not wear even. Found out from dealer new tires are required. 6/32 outer edge of tire and center of tire but 2/32 on inner edge of tire.

The toyota safety recall #csj was performed yesterday on my car.the recall replaced the rear lower control arms and then were locked in place with epoxy.i purchased a 2010 rav4 that was repairable.when i needed an alignment it would cost about 70.now when the car needs an alignment, the lower control arms may have to be replaced at major expense because there is no adjustment.toyota redesigned the lower control arms on the 2012 rav4 and those should have been used in the repair.this repair damages the value of the car because no one would ever buy a car that can't be aligned.if this have been explained to me before the repair, i would never have allowed the repair to have been made.toyota needs to recall the car again and replace the lower control arms with an adjustable arm as is designed in every car on the road.
Toyota has sent out two recalls (#coj and csj). I have called the dealership twice for the latest recall, #csj, and twice the dealer has said they are out of parts. When i called toyota directly, they stated there were not enough replacement parts made and are waiting for more. How can this happen? this is absolutely terrible how toyota has handled this situation. First, they couldn't properly repair the first recall. Secondly, they don't make enough parts to cover the recall.

Installed rear lower suspension arms (non-adjustable rear toes) in 2014 per recall campaign #16v596000. Tire vendor said rear alignment was off in 2016 (when replacing new tires) and could not be adjusted or replaced with adjustable toe due to recall sticker. Dealer inspected toes 2016 and said specs are right and tire vendor does not have right specs. Since 2016 i have replaced 4 tires twice within 50,000 miles even though tires have longer 50,000 mile warranties. The tires have lasted less than half of their expected lifetime. In 2019, tire vendor said rear alignment is off again when replacing tires and can't be adjusted due to recall sticker. This suggests that the rear toes inserted in 2014 for safety recall created a new problem - poor alignment which causes premature wearing of tires. I'm requesting permission to replace non-adjustable rear toes with adjustable ones so that i don't have to keep prematurely replacing my tires.
Sometimes when i am pulling out or pulling in to park my car i hear this bang on my right rear side. Sometimes when i am turning left or right and the right rear tire gets most of the weight of the vehicle i hear the same hard bang. I took it to my mechanic and he rode with me and he heard it too. My mechanic thought it was the struts and replaced them, but that was not the problem. I still have this problem. Please help. My mechanic said that under the car in the rear there is a bar that has a stamp that indicates recall item.

We took our toyota rav4 to principle toyota for the suspension recall on 10/16/2019.upon a tire inspection today (at a local tire store) it was indicated to us that principle toyota did not install the appropriate arms on the car.i am attaching a copy of the service record (which shows what appears to be the correct replacement parts) but that is not what was installed on our vehicle.i feel that this was done in retaliation because upon arriving for my pre-scheduled service appointment principal toyota staff said they did not have the parts or "special tool" to handle the recall.i am attaching an email i sent to principle toyota expressing my disgust on how the "recall" was being handled.along with the email is the parts "supposedly" put on my vehicle.i am attaching documentation supporting our story.
Replacement of both rear suspension arms had been performed on 05/30/2014 free off charge as per recall requirement. When the dealer checked the wheel alignment on 04/30/2015, they said that they need to replace the suspension arms at my expense at this time. Are they responsible to replace them free off charge at this time?

2010 rav4 with only 28000 miles on it has had two recalls for rear suspension. The second one (g0v nhtsa 16v-596) has yet to be performed as the parts are on backorder. This is a serious recall in my opinion and toyota needs to address the issue with more concern. I am having issues where the ride quality has diminished since the first recall was performed. Also, i have had new tires placed on the vehicle and am wanting the recall performed quickly in an effort to not accelerate tire wear from bad alignment. I also am concerned about the safety of this vehicle and limit my wife as to how far and fast she can drive it. It is her primary car.
Received a recall notice in april 2014 stating problem with rear lower suspension arm. Trying to get it fixed but local dealers having trouble getting part and epoxy sealant. Recall notice indicates possibility of loss of vehicle control and a crash if the arm separates. Is it safe to continue to drive the car?

I received the recall notice in october. I called immediately for an appointment and was told that they did not have the parts. In january, they still didn't have the parts and so i called another dealer in the area - same thing, "parts are on back order." this is a significant recall - the 2nd one they have issued and it is 4 months now with no sign of being able to get it fixed. Can't wait for my wheels to fall off!!
When i took my toyota rav4 in for a tire alignment, i was told by the toyota service center that my rear tires could not be adjusted due to a recent recall which epoxied them in place.the service center also explained that my rear tires were out of alignment which was causing them to wear unevenly across the thread.i have contacted toyota directly about this issue, but they feel that the vehicle has been damaged ("perhaps by a pothole" - toyota rep) since the recall was performed and are unwilling to pursue my case.i had this recall performed less than a year ago, and the epoxy has already failed (and i have had no accidents in that time).i would like the nhsta to please look into this recall, as i cannot be the only owner who is facing enormous repair bills just to fix a mandatory recall.
Both rear stabilizer bar connector links snapped off toward the bottom of each link right above the threaded portion indicating that is a weak area. This was not due to rusting, the links just snapped off in the same location. I worked for another dealership in the same dealer group as a service manager and the staff there told me that this is a product problem and they had replaced at least 55 pair of these links. I called toyota customer service to request a goodwill repair authorization and the first question they asked me was if i had the vehicle serviced at the dealership. I said no because as a former technician, i do all my own vehicle maintenance. They said they could not help because of that. This involves a known product problem that they would have taken care of thru what all manufacturers call "hidden warranty" if i had allowed the dealer to service the vehicle. This is discriminatory and should have been taken care of more importantly because it is a safety issue affecting the suspension and vehicle handling. I noticed the problem last fall when the vehicle starting making a clunking noise in the rear and handled sloppy in the rear suspension. You have had a number of other reports as well on this specific problem.
After a recall repair on the rear adjustment arms the adjustment of wheel alignment is prevented by epoxy resin applied to prevent rust. If the wheels are not properly aligned at time of repair or even if the alignment somehow changes there is no way to readjust the alignment.iexperienced this and ruined my two rear tires not realizing the alignment couldn't be adjusted. Now i am confronted with a $1000 reapir billto reinstall the recall repair ( which won't be adjustable for alignment) and two new tires at $235 a piece.if a person didn't notice the wear on their tires the result would be a blowout.this recall repair will cause more problems than it solves.nobody is going to own a car that cannot be aligned without great expense.in additon the safety factor of having an auto that cannot be aligned has many ramifications. The image uploaded shows the tire after 20,000 miles on a 60,000 mile tire.

Recall service was not performed by authorized dealership as part of a scheduled service on multiple recalls.neither the manufacturer nor dealership has contacted me for updated recall service.a verbal explanation for this lack of recall service is that apart is not available to complete this one recall service.
Safety recall notice 16v-596 regardingrear lower suspension arm (no.1) assemblies. We have been trying to get this recall repaired since the notice was sent out. To date toyota has been unable to supply the part to remedy this problem. I do not have the exact date of the recall but has been over three years. I am concerned that if the part fails, as noted in the recall, it could cause loss of control of the auto. Regarding this, who is responsible if an accident were to occur?

Toyota issued a safety recall g0v a few years ago that sealed the rear suspension arms with an epoxy. My rear alignment is out, and i cannot no longer adjust my rear suspension unless i replaced both rear suspension arms. Toyota says this is my own problem, and any repair associated with this safety recall has to come from my pocket. How can the safety recall lead to another problem? i am probably not the only one who has experienced this issue as i read several other folks who voiced their concerns online. Is there anything that nhtsa can do?
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated thatthe vehicle was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 16v596000 (suspension). The mechanic found that the vehicle was not affected by this recall, but it was repaired anyway at toyota of portland (55 ne broadway st, portland, or 97232, (503) 284-1105). At no cost. Toyota?s prescribed recall repairinvolves applying an epoxy to the adjustment nuts on the rear lower suspension arms(toyota part # 4871042020), per the instructions specified by toyota (safety recall ?csj?). Indecember 2018, a tire service center noted the contact?s rear wheels where out ofalignment but that they could not perform an alignment due to the application of the epoxy? which seized the adjustment nuts in place. The contact is now unable to have a rearalignment performed. Contact returned the vehicle to the dealer, who stated that thesuspension arms must be entirely replaced in order to realign the rear wheels ? with toyotainsisting the recall work (applying epoxy) is performed again at contact?s expense. Contactwas quoted $1050 by toyota dealership to perform the work. Prior to the recall, a rearalignment could be performed at the same dealership (or any independent mechanic) ?utilizing the adjustment nuts ? for approximately $85. In summary, the contact believestoyota?s prescribed recall repair has introduced a safety issue due to removing the abilityto have independent mechanic perform a rear alignment.*dt
To whom it may concern, last spring (march 2014) i received a recall notice for my 2010 rav 4 to come in for an inspection for my rear lower suspension arm.i immediately called and was put on a waiting list to be seen.every month or so i would call to check the status of getting seen.they would seem confused each time i would call, but would verify that i was on that "list."but over the many months, i have still yet to be seen.a 2nd recall notice was issued this past december or early january.the last i heard, after over 9 months of being on a wait list was that i was still on the list and i was higher on the list to be seen.upon receiving the 2nd notice, i called kendall toyota and they told me that the list no longer exists and that they will be starting a new list to see people beginning in march.this will now have been around a year of waiting to be seen for the recall. I am concerned, not only that i will not get seen in a timely fashion, but if my car were to get in any sort of accident due to the recall, would the responsibility fall on the company or on myself?kendall toyota of anchorage also informed me that they are the only location that can do the recall maintenance here in this area.i'm frustrated by the continuing delays and would like to see if there is anything else that can be done to be seen sooner rather than later. Thank you![xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

2010 toyota rav 4.consumer writes in regards to vehicle wheel alignment issues.the consumer stated on december 19, 2016 she had her bald tires replaced with new tires. A wheel alignment diagnostic was part of the service. The diagnostic showed the vehicle needed an alignment, especially in the rear.the consumer gave the approval for the wheel alignment. However, the technician returned and said it couldn't be performed because of a bar that was in the rear of the vehicle that had no screwed to adjust it, and there was a sticker saying do not remove. He stated he could do the front, but it would not be correct, because the rear needed to be aligned as well.the consumer went to the dealer, who installed the bar as part of a recall.the dealer stated the vehicle was out of alignment and corporate would have to be informed as to see what the next step would be.the dealer informed the consumer, the alignment was $89.00. However, it would cost $59.00 to check it. The consumer was in disagreement with the $59 charge just to check.
2006-2011 toyota rav4 rear lower suspension arm recall g0vi went in to have this recall performed for a 3rd time and walked out paying a bill of $1,585.92. This was a result of the recall put into place by toyota.what the recall does not address is the issue performing a rear-end alignment on the vehicles affected by this recall. A rear-end alignment will now consist of replacing the previously adjustable rear suspension arms made non-adjustable due to the epoxy applied for this recall, aligning the rear end and re-applying epoxy with parts. The cost of a rear-end alignment to the vehicle owner will now include the cost for replacing the rear suspension arms and the recall epoxy kit. This is the 'band-aid fix" for the design or design implementation flaw in the rear-end control arm that toyota has put in place. This is not acceptable. When i purchased the toyota rav4, the cost of a rear-end alignment was a fraction of the current cost with this "band-aid fix" in place. I feel that toyota is not taking responsibility for this design flaw and unfortunately is passing the added expense to their customers. I will be trading in my rav4 as soon as i can. I will not be replacing it with another toyota product because of this experience. It is sad to think that this is the third try to repair this issue and this is the best that toyota can come up with, by making the customer pay more for the pleasure of owning a supposedly reliable and low maintenance cost vehicle.

Vehicle hit curb and required front suspension component replacement, and a 4 wheel alignment. Vehicle previously had recall #nhtsa13v383000 which it had both rear lower (adjustable) control arms replaced and the adjuster area sealed with an epoxy rendering them non adjustable after recall completion. Toyota's service bulletin (t-sb-0042-14 dated june 30-2014) title "rear suspension toe adjustment out of specification after sr csj".it states in this bulletin(under paragraph b)"if the rear toe alignment is still out of specification on either side replace the rear suspension arm no.1 and complete the campaign csj again for any replaced rear suspension arm. American family insurance denied payment for the re-epoxy of arms so i called toyota customer assistance and explained the situation and the statement in their service bulletin, the case #is [xxx] phone 800-321-4331, the rep was [xxx] and he stated that technical information must be obtained through an authorized toyota dealer, i then contacted the service manager at our local toyota dealership (andy %ballweg midwest toyota 800 3rd street s. I was coasting up to a red light at an intersection. I was going approximately 10 mph when i applied the brakes. When i applied the brakes i heard the engine roar and i was propelled into the intersection. I continued to apply the brakes but the car was not stopping. I shifted into neutral and the car stopped. Three days later i was parked in my driveway (the car in park) and i went to start the car. My foot was on the brake and i pushed the start button. The car immediately started and the engine raced to 4000 rpm plus. When i took my foot off the brake the rpm immediately dropped to a normal rpm. The car was taken to the toyota dealership and was there two days. They were unable to find anything wrong.

Vehicle engine can be shut off without transmission into "park" causing the vehicle to roll away when on a slope/incline causing potential serieous bodely/property damage. Such unexpected vehicle movement disregards basic safety principles: 1st:eliminate potential hazard; 2nd: guard against hazards and 3rd: warn against hazards.unlike toyota, other vehicle makes with "smart-key system" address this hazardby either eliminating, guarding and/or warning safety provisions. Vehicles with conventional key start sytem require driver to shift trransmission into "park" before shutting off the engine. Fyi, i have contacted people in the nhtsa rulemaking devision - fmvss no. 114 who confirmed that this is a "safety hazard" and numerous complains have been filed by consumers.i alsdo contacted the local toyta dealer and toyota usa corporate to file a complain (#10870836) which neither did respond to.
We were pulling out of a paralllel parking spot on a residential streetvery slowly. Then suddenly the car unintendedly accelerated very fast and hit another parked car on the other side of the street. It seemed like the car took control on its own as we were pulling out very slowly.
Accelerated problem:i was on my way home from having maintance work completed on car.my first thought was that toyota had done some thing that created this problem.i was coasting and braking coming up to stop light, which was red, i was going about 1-2 miles per hour, when rpm's went very high.could not stop car with one foot on brake, needed to use both feet on brake peddle to get control of car, almost hit car in front of me.i was able to stop car apprx 1-2 feet from car in front of me.brakes or tires were making very loud noise.my wife said that tact was straight up, which is in the area of 7-8 thousand rpm's.motor was very loud.once i had control of car i put the car in neutral and car was still roaring, i turned the motor of.when light turned green and cars in front of me pulled away, i again started my car up and appeared to running normal.the only thing that i saw was different was a symbol came on dash board, in bottom right side.it was in yellow with a car and wavy tire tracks which i was told was the abssystem.this light stayed on for several minutes and went out.on 01/17/2011, i took the car back to toyota of lake city and they said that everything checked out and could not find any problem with car and could not get to duplicate again.i was told that i could take car home, but found out later that according to toyota rules, i should not have been able to drive car home.tech was trying to get a hold of toyota head qtrs, but i found out later, toyota head qtrs was closed. Not happy with this and asked for further tests.i brought the car back again on 01/26/2011 and was told that field technician ran further tests on car, toyota had the car for 2 days.i was told that everything checked out and nothing further could be done.they needed the car to accelerate again, while toyota had the car to determine what went wrong.

A/c stopped working and the dealer said the compressor need to be replaced. For a less than 5 year car to have a failed compressor is strange. When we are talking, they mentioned this is a known problem for toyota with this model. When i asked about possible of recall, they said they don't think there will be a recall because it is not a safety issue. Why is it not a safety issue? there could be harmful air and metal particle blow into car cabin. Now i remembered that before the a/c stopped working, there was an very short episode of "burn smell" and there was some tiny particle blown into my face. However, i didn't think too much about it back then because the a/c didn't stop working right away.

Toyota rav4's paint is peeling on the roof in the area located between the top of the windshield and the moon roof. The paint color is blizzard pearl white. I have personally observed the same issue on other rav4s having noticeable missing paint patches in the same area of the roof. The paint also chips very easily over the entire surface of the vehicle.

The 2010 rav4 rolls backwards while in drive. I first noticed this while stopped a red light in traffic. I took my foot off the brake and the car proceeded to roll backwards and did not stop until i applied brake pressure. I've also experienced this while stopped to remove my mail from my mail box and the car rolled backwards into the roadway while in drive. It happened again when i was in my driveway the car while in drive rolls backwards, freely, with no sign of stopping until i apply brake pressure. This is extremely dangerous and unexpected when it happens. My toyota dealership claims this is normal for this car. Frankly, i don't feel safe in the car. Thankfully, no one has been injured when this happens. I'm not sure if the failed component is the drive train, the transmission or the hydraulics. This really needs to be looked into by someone before anyone is killed or injured.

On 1/28/10 as i slowed for a traffic light the rav4 started to highly rev up.( my foot was on the brake not on the accelerator) yet it sounded as if it was going to speed up for no reason. It didn't actually accelerated. I was able to throw the gear into park and it stopped. That same day i brought it to the dealer and they said they fixed it as per the recall. On 3/11/10 i was talking with someone who was outside the vehicle. I was at a full stop with my foot on the brake but still in drive. The same high revving again happened. I again threw the gear into park and the revving stopped. I brought the vehicle back to the dealer. They inspected the vehicle and they had a toyota field tech inspect the vehicle. They found nothing wrong with the pedal. I have witnesses to both events. There is some problem if it isn't the pedal, it is something else. Vehicles don't rev by themselves. I refuse to drive the vehicle and i have notified toyota. Please advise and help me i like the vehicle otherwise.
I was at a complete stop at a red light with my foot on the brake, i was stopped for at least 10 or more seconds. With my foot on the brake the rav4 started to move. I applied more pressure to the brake pedal, but the car continued forward. I struck the car in front of me. The engine was revving loudly. The car continued forward. I then placed both feet on the brake pedal in an attempt to stop the car,i struck the car a second time. At which point i was able to get the car in park. The engine continued to rev for a second then stopped.i moved the car a short distance to a parking lot. An accident report was filed with the police, and the car was towed to the toyota dealership. Toyota was contacted and i am awaiting spx service solutions /eaa to inspect the car and download information from the event data recorder. The road conditions were dry, weather clear, air temp. Was minus 6.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated while braking from unknown speeds, the vehicle abnormally accelerated and there was an unusual increase in engine rpms. The vehicle continued to accelerate while the contact was applying extreme force to the brakes. He then shifted the vehicle into neutral and then into park. The vehicle slowly began to decrease in speed. The dealer advised bringing the vehicle in for diagnostic testing and further inspection. The failure and current mileages were 17,000.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated the vehicle speed accelerated independently causing the contact to rear end the vehicle in front of her, while she had the brake pedal depressed. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. There were no medical injuries that were sustained that required medical attention. The vehicle was not towed, the contact able was to drive the vehicle home.

The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated he was struck in the passenger side by another vehicle going 30 mph. The side curtain air bags deployed but not the frontal air bags. After the contact was struck, the vehicle began to abnormally accelerate. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle despite his attempts in abruptly applying the brakes. The vehicle drove over several curbs and proceeded to accelerate up a hill. The contact was able to steer the vehicle but could not bring the vehicle to a stop. The vehicle did not stop until all four tires were flat. The vehicle was destroyed. A police report was available. The manufacturer advised they would send an engineer to further inspect the nature of the failure. The vehicle was towed to a salvage facility. The failure and current mileage was 7,000.
When i drive my toyota 2010 rav4 over a significant bump or pothole, the car lunges forward/accelerates. It doesn't last long , but i certainly have not had this happen with my previous cars (vw passat wagon, ford grand cherokee,etc.).
While test driving a 2010 toyota rav 4, idling at a stop light, the engine began revving at a rapid pace. He then restarted the vehicle to resume normal vehicle operation. The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact was driving approximately 35 mph; proceeding to a stop sign. While braking there was a surge of unintended acceleration. The engine began to revv. The vehicle resumed to normal operation. The authorized dealer was notified and recommended the vehicle be towed for diagnostic testing. A recall repair was performed prior to the purchase of the vehicle. The recall was under nhtsa campaign id 10v017000 (vehicle speed control: accelerator pedal). The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint . The failure mileage was 345.
At stop sign looking to my left because i was going to make a right turn. As i put my foot on pedal to make the right turn it took off. The seat belt press hard around my neck and i had use both foot trying stop the car. My neck was soar and my knee was paining. I stay at the gas station about 30 mintues i was shake up.the engine light came on after 30 minutes i gas up start finish my trip.the rav4 engine was revelry often. When i return the rav4 to budget rental i let attendant know that the rav4 it's took off, revely and engine light it's was on and it was running rough. When i return rav4 to budget rental the engine light was on and it run rough i told the attendant. When i spoke to attendant about rav4 he say okay he have rav4 check out. I do not know what correct was make i drop rav4 off at budget rental car and pay my billed i left. I do not have vin number on therental agreement but, i do have plate number on rental agreement.
I have a toyota rav 4 2010. Several times when i have come to a stop and then shifted into park, the car starts to accelerate on its own as if it were racing top speed.i slammed on the brakes.i tried to shift into neutral . The car lurched forward and crashed into the snow bank in front of me as i turned the car off.this happened two othertimes as i was trying to park today. I tried calling the dealership but they were closed. Don't know what they will do. I need the car for work tomorrow, but am hesitant to drive it anywhere of course.
After having had two events of sudden acceleration in an 2007 toyota rav4, the dealer, metro toyota, talked us unto trading in the 2007, for a brand new 2010 rav4, after assuring us that there were no similar complaints with the 2010 model. We drove this car for about 230 miles, when on june 20 ,2010, a mile after exiting the freeway, with my wife in the passenger seat, i was coming up to a red light, going down a slight slope,on the road, when the car engine surged. I put the gear in neutral, drove the car paraller and near somebody'e driveway, put the car in park, and was preparing to go knock on the door of the homeowner to ask him/her to come and witness the, rpms, when the car surging stopped. I carefully drove the car home. I did not call the dealer that evening. The next day, i was going to a nearby grocery, preparing to get into a left turning lane, approaching a red light, again going down a slight incline on the road, my foot on the brake, when i felt the engine rev up strongly. I pressed hard on the brake, put the gear in neutral, lifted up the hand brake, and a got out of the car for a while hoping to spot a police car or have someone else come and witness this terrible event. Seeing no one willing to stop, i got back in the car, again pressed my foot on the brake, but the rpms remained above 5000. After waiting one more minute, the speed of the engine came down to normal, i picked up the required items at the grocery store, and returned to my home nearby. I called the dealer, they sent a man who took the car to service. The car was there for over three weeks. Their answer was that the car checked ok, they attempted no repair. I refused to again drive this car on the road. I ended up buying a similar car of another make. This and the previous incident in the 2007 rav 4 has cost us over 13,000 dollars .
On several occasions the cruise control did not disengage, either when the brakes were applied or the lever pulled. It has accelerated at least twice while approaching slowed traffic, ahead.
Incident = car 2010 toyota rav4 unintended acceleration happened 3 times. First time it happened before i brought car to service station for recall repair .second time it was after recall. Third time happened just on july 18 2010 about 9 pm. I was standing at traffic light when rpm went up and car start moving forward. I put it in neutral and had to turn off the ignition because rpm still were very high. Please advise what should i do. My wife and kids driving my car sometimes and i know for sure that they would get in an accident if that problem happens with them.damage resulting = moral distress for me. My wife experienced that all 3 times, very depressed and scared to even be in the car, never mind driving it. Car was serviced in millennium toyota for acceleration recall. I need an advice where can i check this car because it looks like toyota is unable to identify the source of the problem. I also would like to get data related to incident from the car computer by second party before toyota would do the service because when i brought my car for recall i was told that they had to flash the computer. My understanding of flashing computer is that memory was flashed and old information is not recoverable. Please advise.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav 4. While driving at speeds of 40 mph and applying the brakes, the brakes would not engage and there was an unusual increase in engine rpms. The vehicle then abnormally accelerated without warrant and the contact placed the vehicle into neutral in order to stop the acceleration. The dealer advised having the vehicle diagnosed to locate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 315 and the current mileage was 335. Updated 7/20/10 updated 07/23/10
I was stopped at a stoplight at about 4:00 pm with my foot fully on the brake. While waiting for the light to change, the car went into a high idle.i pressed the brake pedal firmly, but the car was lurching, trying to accelerate.i put the car into park and it made a horrible noise.it stayed in high idle for several more seconds, but then seemed to kick itself out of that idle.ithought the car may have died.the light turned green, so i gently put it into drive (again thinking that it may have died), but it was still running, so i drove across the intersection, went to a parking lot, and called the dealer.the service advisor said that i should have the car towed in (at my expense), which was not acceptable to me.i called the toyota 800 number and they also said that they would not pay for any of the expenses.they said that if something was found wrong with the car, they would reimburse me.i drove the car to the dealership that night.the advisor told me that they would need to keep the car until the regional manager could come, which would be several days.they called me the next afternoon to say that the dealership had run all tests, and found nothing wrong with the car, and that they had never heard of the rav 4 having this issue.they said they could keep the car until the regional manager could come, which was now estimated to be 2-3 weeks.they said he would run the exact same tests on the vehicle as they had run.i went and picked up the vehicle. I went into the dealership yesterday and met with the service and sales managers.they advised me that though they were not saying they didn't believe me about the incident, they could not duplicate the problem, so there was nothing else they could do, except to help me get out of my lease and into another toyota vehicle.i opted to trade my rav 4 in and am now leasing a camry.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav-4.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 11v113000 (vehicle speed control:accelerator pedal). The contact stated that the technicians could not determine if the floor mats in the vehicle were all-weather floor mats or not and therefore, did not replace the floor mats as stated in the recall. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired.the failure and current mileage was 15,444.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav 4. The contact purchased her vehicle one year ago and consulted with the dealer in reference to recalls. The dealer advised there were no recalls on her year, make and model. Although there was a recall on her year, make and model (nhtsa campaign id number: 10v017000, vehicle speed control: accelerator pedal) the dealer advised the only recall that existed was pertaining to the floor mats. The contact felt her safety was at risk and wanted to sell her vehicle but was concerned with the rapid decrease in value. She felt she was sold a defective vehicle by an authorized dealer and was not warned that a potential defect existed in the vehicle. The dealer was contacted several times but has yet to respond. There were no failures existing in the vehicle at this time. The current mileage was 1,000.
My adult daughter was slowly backing out of our driveway in our 2010 toyota rav4.the car suddenly accelerated.the car went out of control and the front side of the car hit some rocks causing the bumper to break.
On december 24, 2010 my father experienced a third incident of unintended acceleration in his 2010 toyota rav. Despite having already performed all the necessary recall fixes, extensive testing by 2 toyota dealerships and even having the entire gas pedal replaced, the car malfunctioned. The engine began to rev at a high rate as he slowed for a 4-way stop. His foot was firmly on the brake, not the gas pedal as toyota likes to contend.the brake was not fully responsive and he had to lift his foot from the brake and depress it a second time to bring the car to a stop, though the engine continued to race. His foot was not touching the accelerator.he was fortunate to be driving at a slow enough speed and traffic was light at the time so he was able to avoid an accident. He contacted the dealership and they have tested the car (again) and still can not find any problem (again). Now they said they need to keep the car for 4 more weeks till a rep arrives in the area for more testing.

At approximately 5:00 pm on july 19th, 2010, our toyota rav 4 (model year 2010 mileage 6450) experienced an incident of unintended acceleration. Driving home with 4 members of the family, we approached an intersection and the driver began to apply the brake. The roadway was crowded, so our speed was fortunately minimal (approximately 25 mph). While applying the brake, the engine suddenly began to rev at a high rate, the driver said the car was not responding well to the brake and we may not stop in time as we approached the intersection. Instinctively, i looked at the driver's foot to see if there was some problem with him hitting the gas pedal, but could clearly see both feet and only the brake being applied.the driver pumped the brake, lifting his foot from the brake and reapplying; we jolted forward he lifted his foot from the brake of the revving car and then reapplied the brake. The engine suddenly slowed and returned to a normal idle and we were able to stop without hitting anyone.we did not file a police report, but contacted the dealer the following morning and were instructed to bring the car in for inspection the following day. Not surprisingly, as they appear incapable of detecting the problem with their diagnostics, no problem was found and we were asked to reclaim the car a few days later. We told the dealership that we consider this leased car to be unsafe and do not want anything to do with the car and wished to return it as it is clearly defective. 4 members of my family witnessed the event and no one is getting in the car again. The toyota dealership's customer service representative said they are only dealer, they are not the manufacturers and we had to address any concerns regarding a return to the manufacturer, in their opinion it checked out fine. The car had already been serviced by the dealer several months prior, to address the rav 4 recall for the unintended acceleration problem.clearly in our case their fix did not fix the problem.
My 2010 toyota rav4 was stopped at a traffic light, with my foot on the brakes. The car slowly began accelerating despite normal pressure being applied to the brakes, and then suddenly the engine began revving loudly and the car began to accelerate more quickly. The car accelerated to perhaps a few miles an hour into the intersection before i was able to stop it by applying heavy pressure on the brakes and also applying the parking brake. After i was able to stop the car, the engine continued to rev increasingly loudly for several more seconds (with obvious power that i could easily feel trying to overcome the brakes i was applying) until i was able to shut the engine off with the ignition switch. The incident did not result in an accident. Being in a busy and dangerous intersection, i decided to restart the car and drive it with extreme caution to a safe area to park. When restarted, the car operated normally and presented no further problems. The car's air conditioning and satellite radio were operating at the time of the incident. Weather conditions were clear and sunny, and the roads were dry. The car does have a rubber all-weather floor mat on the driver's side, which was secured by hooks installed by the toyota dealership where i purchased the car. The edge of the floor mat is several inches away from the accelerator pedal when it is fully depressed, and the mat itself will not physically move or slide even when purposefully trying to move it with force.i'm absolutely certain that it did not move or otherwise interfere with the accelerator pedal. This is the first and only time that i have experienced this problem. After the incident, i drove the car with extreme care to my toyota dealership (and experienced no further problems), where it is now being held for inspection. The car's mileage at the time of the incident was approximately 6,200 miles. It was also serviced by toyota several months ago in response to the recall relating to unintended acceleration.
Problem:accelerator stuck in 2010 toyota rav4on 3/31/10, while at low speed and slowing for a stop light, my accelerator stuck, impairing my ability to stop.i pressed firmly on the brake, then engine continued to race.while continuing to press the brake, i put the car in neutral, then into park.the car stopped.i am surprised i did not rear end the vehicle in front of me.i drove carefully to the rochester toyota dealership, just minutes away.i spoke with the service manager.this vehicle is one involved in the current toyota recall.i had the accelerator repair made on march 5, 2010.i had not experienced any accelerator problem before today.i explained to the manager my concern that the true problem with uncontrolled acceleration has not been identified, thus my problem occurred despite the prior replacement of my pedal.i phone the toyota 800 number an made a report.neither the toyota service manager nor the person at the 800 number could assure me that these incidents are being documented or evaluated individually or as a group.i find this very unsettling, and i'm concerned for my safety and the safety of others in and around toyota vehicles.
My rav4 was part of the recall. One, i bought my car on 1/22/10. I heard toyota filed their claim on 1/21/10. The recall was announced on 1/26/10. I feel the dealers most have known what was happening and sold me my car anyway. On the toyota website it stated if you bought your car within 5 days of the recall the dealer would take it back. When i called the dealer they said they never heard anything like that and redirected my call to their service department, who told me there wasn't a fix yet and i was to wait to be notified. I wanted information on the general manager or district manager and was told i could find it on the website. From there i didn't know who to talk to. I have been sick to my stomach ever since.two, i never received any information about the recall. I had to call the toyota hotline and they also said to wait for notification. Three, never receiving a postcard, i finally called a dealer and arranged for my car to be fixed. I was experiencing random acceleration when the car was hot and cold. Four, after the fix the car continues to do this. It will accelerate rapidly, decelerate and then run smoothly again. It does this randomly. It is quite nerve racking when this happens. I don't know what to do. I have a young son which i transport on a daily bases. I am scared to death to drive a car i waited 12 years to buy.

Car seems to lag when i step on gas pedal from a stop position (when i'm stopped at a red light).it has happened 3 times now and only when i'm trying to turn left.vehicle doesn't jump, but there is a lag and the car doesn't go, even when i'm pressing down on the gas pedal.does anyone else have this problem?this is my first brand new vehicle and i'm pretty disappointed.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, approaching a stop sign, the brakes were engaged firmly and the engine began to rev for approximately eight seconds. The contact drove home with caution at an extremely low speed. The vehicle was then towed to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. The vehicle had been previously repaired under a recall related to the defect. The nhtsa campaign id number was 10v017000 (vehicle speed control:accelerator pedal). The contact was displeased to know that the remedy was not sufficient. The manufacturer and dealer were notified of the failure and the contact was informed that a field engineer would investigate the acceleration problem. The approximate failure mileage was 6,300. The vin was unavailable.

The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure and advised the vehicle was operating as designed. The contact believed the failure to be a severe safety problem. The failure mileage was 452 and the current was unknown.

Check engine light indicated. The car was taken to the dealer, where the dealer mentioned, "evidence of rodent/small animal has chewed wiring harness at connector completely through."the car will need wiring harness.

Toyota/rav4year 2010on feb22 2010 acceleration . On feb 24th in to toyota for the recall.

The driver's sun visor will not stay in the closed position & is constantly falling down, which obstructs my view.the attached photo shows the visor as closed at it will stay.i have contacted toyota and they refuse to acknowledge the problem, despite the fact that on several message boards numerous owners report that this is a design flaw dating back to prior rav4 generations.
My driver side sun visor hangs down about 1.5 inch from the ceiling all the time. It does not stay up close to the top at all and it blocks my view. It is hard to see the traffic light with it hanging down so i have to hold it up with one hand while driving. I hit my head on it a couple of times while getting into the car. I called toyota and they told me that there is no recall on sun visors for rav 4. I will have to get it fixed from the dealer who charges approx. $150.i came across multiple complaints about the same problem from rav4 and camry owners. This is a very serious issue and it can cause accidents and head injuries. Toyota had a recall on visors for camry and not for rav4. I am deeply disappointed that toyota is not taking any action on this issue.

The drivers side window switches are and have been sticky. A couple of months ago the passenger window failed to roll up and would not roll up with force. I saw the recalls to the year prior to my car make year and it's very similar. I think the same issue exists in the 2010 rav 4s.
I purchased a 2010 toyota rav4 january 2010. Living in maine, winter driving is unavoidable. My complaint is about the rear windshield wiper, which is designed to clear the window from the driver's side to the passenger side. Unfortunately, the snow gets trapped by the mounted spare tire and stops the blade. To clear the rear window, i have to exit the car and manually clear out the snow, which does not solve the problem when it continues to snow. I believe this creates a dangerous situation, either because my field of vision is restricted or because i have to exit the car in dangerous road conditions. I reported this to toyota corp. And to my local dealer and was told nothing could be done to fix this problem.
While driving at approximately 55 mph on a two lane highway, the sunroof suddenly cracked and then shattered for no apparent reason.there was no debris (rock, bolt) etc found in the glass once we were able to pull over and look at the damage.the glass appears to have bowed upward and away from the frame and then shattered.
I went to rotate the tires for the first time on my 2010 rav4 2.5 v6. I had never had the tires off before. The only time they would have been off was when i went back to the dealer after having the car for approximately 6 months to have the front 2 wheels re-balanced because of a slight shaking in the steering wheel. This fixed the problem. However when i went to rotate 4 tires, 2 of the front lug bolts broke. When i inspected them i could see that a couple more looked like they were also stretched between the threads, most likely from over torquing. Knowing that they would likely break also, i decided to reinstall the wheel anyway and see at what torque point the others would break. The ones that already were stretched broke at 85 ft lbs. 2 others that were not visibly stretched broke at 90 & 95 ft.lbs. I've worked on and restored cars for 50 years. I know what wheel studs will take before they break. I've never had 13 mm or 1/2 inch wheel bolts break at this low torque. The replacement bolts, wagner brake brand, are marked as a metric 10.9 strength bolt, equivalent to a sae grade 8. These are rated to take +/- 100 ft. Lbs. Torque. The stock toyota bolts have no markings and they recommend 80 ft lbs as the amount to tighten to.i believe 8.8 are stock strength bolts which would take 80 ft lbs, but these are inferior if they are 8.8 and leave no margin for error (over 80 ft lbs). Someone using an impact wrench could easily over stress these inferior bolts. I have saved all 20 bolts i replaced. I believe if they were independently tested it would show that they are unsafe for these cars. From what i have found on the internet, this seems to be wide spread on most 2009 and 2010 rav4 cars. It would be interesting to see what these 2 years bolts test at compared to the 2012 and later models. It might show that toyota knew they had a breakage problem.
They did a recall on my vehicle and it was about a bolt rusting on the backend near the rear tire so the fix was to protect a bolt.they put some bar on the back side near the rear tire that made it where i have not been able to get my back end of the car aligned since.causing my tires to keep getting bubbles in them.this happens to every set i get and i have been told that they cannot fix the rear alignment because of the recall. This fight has gone on for years.all toyota says is they were only required to fix the recall ....in other words they do not care about the alignment issue.please help me. I have the report from the last attempted alignment showing how out of alignment the vehicle is.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav4. The contact stated that all four rims of the vehicle were rusted and caused the tire pressure to become low. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rims needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Shortly after dealer maintenance, three lug bolts broke off while torquing the lug nuts to 80 foot pounds.the lug bolts appear to made from a low grade of steel.the dealer was good enough to replace broken bolts, but refused to replace all the lug bolts.i maintain that all my lug bolts could be damaged to the point of near failure and that toyota should be using a higher grade steel in these bolts.
At some time between 2:00 pm and 2:30 pm on november 5, 2016 my wife and i were driving my 2010 rav4 south on county route 561 in voorhees township, nj on the inside lane of this 4 lane highway when i lightly pressed the brake pedal to slow from 45 mph to the lowered speed limit.suddenly, and without warning, the left rear wheel locked up tight, causing the vehicle to swerve abruptly into and across two lanes of oncoming traffic.i was able to regain some control by releasing the brake and steering to the right to avoid going over the curb, but the rear end of the car slid to the left and hit the curb..updated 04/11/17 updated 04/24/2017
There is an issue with the wheel studs that appears to be quite common on rav4's of several years. The wheel studs break quite often and the toyota and the toyota dealers blame it on the torque of the lug nuts. This is definitely not the case since i've had two break off since i purchased the card new in september, 2009. The first broke off at approximately 8,000 mile and second broke of at 24,000 miles while i was drive on an interstate. The 24,000 mile one broke and the it was 41/2 months after the tires were rotated. In searching the internet, there are multiple problems and i believe this is definitely something in the manufacture of these stud where they are using inferior product to manufacture them. This is a very dangerous situation especially if the car owner is not frequently checking their wheels to see if this is happening.
The contact owns a 2010 toyota rav 4. The vehicle was parked and the contact was attempting to replace the rear passenger side tire. While unscrewing the lugs, four of the five studs on the wheel fractured. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the technician stated that the studs could be repaired but was not covered under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 16,300.
One wheel stud on the front passenger side was broken. Apparently it was made of poor steel material. I checked internet and found this problem was also reported by many others. To our disappointment, so the manufacture and dealers are still not accepting the causation. I am thinking boycott toyota since they are using cheap poor parts made in china.
