Front passenger seatbelt light is always flashing without anyone in the passenger seat. I saw on this website that 2009-2012 toyota rav4 had a recall in 2013 for occupant sensing system calibration. I called toyota and they said hay my vin number was not included in the recall but why am i having that problem now?! he description in that recall says that the airbags won't deploy or will deploy improperly in the case of an accident. I believe that i'm having the same problem.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while applying the brakes at 45 mph, the brakes failed to respond, causing him to crash into a telephone pole. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact was thrown into the windshield and sustained numerous severe to moderate injuries. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the front end would need to be replaced. Extensive rodent damage to wiring harness, passenger air bag, heat/ac ducts, headliner, carpeting front & rear, instrument panel, and many more misc. Parts. Repair costs - $10,257.91 because toyota chose to make this car with a smaller carbon footprint using edible products (soy foam, rice husks, etc.) in place of petroleum for much of the plastic parts. This material is now attractive to rodents and they designed the air inlet to the heater without a screen which allows rodents entry to the vehicle. It becomes a safety issue because the air bag was damaged enough to require replacement. My toyota has become the incredible edible car.

Daughter was driving 65mph on interstate when large truck in front of her dropped their drive shaft. She tried to straddle the object due to no shoulder and another vehicle in next lane. Report stated it rupture gas tank and loss ability to steer vehicle sending get into and through guardrail. Totalled everyone front end of vehicle. No airbags deployed. She suffered significant concussion and whiplash.

I was involved in a multi-car collision. My drivers air bag did not inflate although those in the other cars did. This resulted in more serious injury to me than should have occurred.

I purchased a 2010 toyotas rave 4 on november 10, 2009.drove the 400400 miles for thanksgiving.on november 23, did errands and the car surged when i was in a parking lot.that evening the news had the story of the lexus accident in california.took the floor mat out.a few days later, the car surged again.when i returned home, i took the car to the dealer.theycould not duplicate the problem.on feb. 5, 2010, was driving home from florida and pulled into a rest area and at the car surged.went to dealer and they put in a new ssc-ada accelerator.said at the reinforcement bar system was operating normally.march 3, 2010 - car surged.turned off engine - took 3 times for car to idle normally.dealer found nothing.may 20, 2010 - drove 2 blocks.stopped for 5 minutes.car revved to 3500rpms.dealer kept car overnight.no problems. May 27, 2010 .car surged to 4,500 rpms.dealer called toyota andopened a tas cas.reset memory.january 26, 2011 - car surged to 6000 rpms.restarted 4 times beforecar would idle normally.dealer said car working within manufactures parameters.february 28, 2011 - car surged.dealer kept car.test drove 619 miles and no problems.march 18, 2011 - rpms went to 3500.dealer found nothing wrong.april 11, 2011 - car surged again.dealer found nothing wrong.all these incidents are documented with toyota's customer service.they claim since i was not in an accident or injured, and that dealer can't find anything wrong, toyota states there is nothing wrong with my car.but there is.............

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While driving 30 mph, the four wheel drive check warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. I was driving up my driveway, applied the brakes and did not stop, but was forced forward until i hit my house.i searched for the brakes but could not find them, because the brakes were stuck to the floor. There was no brake light on.before that the odometer was jumping between numbers (20,17, 54, ect.).i had my car to the toyota dealership twice and they could not find anything.i had 5 boys in my house and hit my son's bedroom, someone could of been injured.

I am having a sporadic, continuing starting problem with a 2009 toyota rav4. The problem seems to appear after the car has been driven, then parked. On attempting to restart the car, the accessories (radio, lights, etc.) come on but the engine does nothing. There is no sound from the starter. Repeating the starting sequence has no effect. Attempting to change the "start/stop" by using the method described in the user's manual also has no effect. It appears that something has to cool down before the car will restart. This has happened at least four times in the year i have had the car, and always at unexpected times.my dealer has had no luck recreating the problem, or finding a solution for it.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the ignition button failed to shut the engine off. The contact also mentioned that the door locks failed to function. The failure was experienced numerous times. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 60,342.updated 6/10/14

Toyota new start and start button on my 2009 rav-4limited does not always work when button is pushed.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4.after placing the vehicle into park, the contact noticed smoke under the hood of the vehicle.the smoke mostly appeared on the passenger side underneath the dashboard and windshield wipers.by the time the fire department arrived, there were very strong flames coming from the vehicle.the heat from the fire melted the garage door.the fire was extinguished and the fire marshall stated that the cause of the fire was due to a mechanical or electrical defect in the vehicle.a police report was filed and there were no injuries.the vehicle was destroyed and is still at the parking garage.the contact believes that a recall should be issued.the current and failure mileages were 3,000.

While stopped at red light with right foot on brake, engine suddenly accelerated to very high rpm. Shifted to neutral and engine revved even higher. Turned off ignition. Signal turned green and since i was in traffic, decided to try to start engine again. Engine started and performed normally. Immediately drove to toyota dealer who said they could find nothing wrong. We are now afraid to drive this vehicle! things could have been much worse had we been moving in traffic!

Vehicle fails to start occasionally, lights turn on with normal brightness indicating it is probably not a battery issue, but no cranking . Dealer checked the car, but could not replicate the problem.the date below is the approx last incident date.

The brake was engaged in traffic when the car started to accelerate. I applied the brake more firmly and put the car in park. The engine began to rev uncontrollably in a cloud of white smoke. I switched the car off and restarted the motor and it then ran normally.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. Upon starting the vehicle, the tire indicator light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop but the failure could not be diagnosed. After three days, the non-skid, cruise control and check engine lights also illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but the failure could still not be diagnosed. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 19,000.updated 01/14/11*lj

The power steering light came on then the steering wheel locked i jerked it to the right to get it to pull off the road. I was driving on a city street going up hill when the car finally disabled, the mechanic told me he found nothing wrong when he put it on the diagnostic i don't feel safe driving the car with my child i've paid 140.00 for and inspection now i'm taking it to the sf toyota mechanic.

Back door cannot unlock, no manual accessibility to open door from inside, no key entry from outside, latch actuator failed, if stuck in trunk after accident door cannot be opened due to no handle/no manual function to open door due to no operating latch.

Inintended acceleration occured while braking.engine reved while braking -i put the car in park - engine redlined - switched off ignition - car ran normally after the ignition was switched on. This is the second occurrance in one year. The first time we took the car to the dealer but they could find no fault.

While my wife was driving on the highway at 60 mph the engine lost power. Moving to the right lane to pull over, flames began coming out of the top of the hood, hitting the windshield.she tried stopping but brake pedal went to the floor, requiring her to put the car in park and slide on grass.she jumped out of the vehicle and within 8 minutes the car was completely destroyed.

Driving alone in heavy traffic, on a major road. About 6 pm.warning light appeared followed immediately by whole dashboard that lit up.no previous warning.vehicle lost complete power.i made split-second decision to make a quick right turn into small shopping center but only managed, without power, to maneuver vehicle on a slant up the incline.emergency flashers stopped working shortly thereafter, so car not easily visible to others.no heat in car due to lost power and it was a bitter cold and windy night.had to be towed to dealer at cost of $190 (insurance reimbursed me only $25).cost of replacement parts plus labor at dealer was $1499.87.i couldhave been plowed into from behind by another driver.i was vulnerable with no power to car.an online search reveals toyota has many irate customers re water pumps failing on their rav 4s from various years--not just the year of my model.yet toyota sent no recall notice re this dangerous flaw in their vehicles. And they maintain that since the warranty expired, they are under no obligation to cover my costs.they have offered only $522 47 to me.an expired warranty is not relevant.this is a safety issue.suppose i had been on an interstate highway with high speeds?

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated thatonce the headlights was deactivated, the radio failed. The vehicle was not taken to a mechanic or the dealer for inspection of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 46,000.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the wire harness wiring was being damaged by animals biting the wiring. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing, but it was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 7,000.

An emergency stop from highway speeds (65 mph) on hot (85+f) dry pavement resulted in a significantly less than expected braking capacity.best guess is that the traction control system throttled back available braking capacity.brake pedal can be pushed to the floor at will but the traction control system takes over braking.the brakes cannot be immediately released and additional pressure (braking) cannot be applied.

I was traveling on i-94 from madison, wi to minneapolis, mn in late december.the interstate was in good driving condition -- no ice, snow, or rain.it was a nice day with little wind and temperature in the mid-20's.i was in the left lane, passing a slower car in the right lane.i was traveling at 75 mph with cruise control on.just as i pulled ahead of the other car, my 2009 toyota rav4 pulled violently to the left. I thought we might roll, but then the car stabilized and i was able to maintain control.there was no obvious external cause for the lurch to the left.it felt like a blowout, but we stopped to check the tires and they were fine.it couldn't have been wind sheer because there was very little wind.there were no potholes in the road.at the time i thought the car to my right might have hit a rock or something and sent it sliding into my path.i suppose that's a possibility, but i didn't see anything behind me in the rear view mirror, so i think it's unlikely.i'm wondering if a malfunction of the electronic stability control occurredthere has been no recurrence.

Brought vehicle in for a recall and oil change, and was told that the water pump has failed and requires replacement at a cost of over $700.upon research, this early water pump failure appears to be a common problem with rav4's, although no recall has been issued yet.

Whenever we are traveling about 40 mph and 1500 rpm, there is a rattle noise. The vibration holds for as long as 1-2 seconds. As soon as the vibration starts, you can let off the gas or step on the gas to change the rpms and it instantly stops.the car has been making this sound since shortly after we bought it brand new. Now we're being told that it's a transmission failure. The torque converter is the route if the problem. At 1500 rpm and 38-40 mph the torque converter in the transfer case is vibrating, causing the heat shield to rattle because of the transfer of vibrations. It just seems like we've had a faulty transmission all along.

I was coming to a stop at traffic light. As i slowed down with my foot on the brake the engine suddenly began to surge. Since my foot was already on the brake i was able to push down harder on it to stop it from hitting the car ahead of me. Within a second or two, as the engine continued to surge, i shifted the transmission into park. When i did this the engine surged even more. I then turned off the engine by turning the key which did shut everything down. I then restarted the engine and it ran normally. I was somewhat shaken up by the incident. Note that this had nothing to do with the floor mats or hitting the wrong pedal. My foot was on the brake pedal the whole time the incident occurred-if it hadn't been i would have crashed into the car in front of me.

I noticed a strange rattling noise from the engine when starting my car 1st thing in the morning and when starting it after it has sat for a few hours; i researched online for other similar complaints and found that toyota has discovered an issue with the cam shaft on some vehicles. I have just learned of a 2nd recall on my vehicle, this one for the rear suspension after visiting the toyota website, but i found nothing about a recall regarding the cam shaft. I had planned on bringing the cam shaft issue to the attention of the service tech when i take the vehicle in for the rear suspension recall but am unsure if anything will be done. Please advise.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while in reverse, the check engine warning light illuminated as the four wheel drive failed to function. The contact mentioned that the failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the four wheel drive needed to be reset. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 20,000.

Vehicle was parked overnight on our front driveway facing the garage. Where it always parked everyday. The weather was warm and clear my wife was in the vehicle and was preparing to buckle up and drive to church, i entered the vehicle into the passenger seat and buckled up. She started the vehicle and immediately accelerated through the roof. I yelled at her to get her foot off the accelerator and she yelled at me that she was no where near it. I then told her to pull the floor mat / carpet back and it was already back and locked down to the floor.i told her to turn it off. The car idled down to stop once key was turned off. We sat there for a few moments, i told her to depress the accelerator pedal once and try to start the vehicle. The car started normally we let it warm up for a moment and drove away.she told me she was glad i was in the car to see the event because it had happened 3 other times in the last 45 days. Fortunately she was not traveling at a high speed when it occurred or on a busy roadway or school zone.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph the contact noticed the check engine light illuminated on the instrument panel. The warning light stayed on constantly. Also, the contact mentioned that the noise volume in the cabin of the vehicle was extremely loud while driving at all speeds. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 27,000.

All lights come on check engine,4wd,trac , come and goes, going 6 times already to dealer last2 weeks.. Rav4 with low miles .. Toyota very dissatisfied

Cold start metallic rattle due to faulty vvti actuator(tsb-004-13 -a). Between $900 and $1700 to fix and is not the fault of the owner. Issue is occurring with many toyota models and can be traced back to poor quality of engine components.

I took my car in for service on october 12, 2020 because the oil light was flickering though i am not due for another oil change until january.i was told to replace the motor due to excessive oil consumption.upon researching online learned that this is due todefective piston rings and in 2011, toyota issued a technical service bulletin.at this point, they are refusing to correct the error with the design of the pistons.

While decelerating on a freeway off-ramp at approx. 25 mph, the brakes failed to stop the car. Going no more than 5 mph, i lifted off slightly then depressed them all the way to the floor; they didn't engage properly but finally slowed the car almost to a complete stop, but the engine revved and the car kept wanting to go forward.i threw the transmission into park and turned off the ignition.

Loud idle coming from passenger side of engine.occurs at start up and at operating temperatures.brought to dealership and was diagnosed as a failing water pump; would need to be replaced.seems premature for water pump to be failing given the mileage.

When car is at 1500 rpm at 40 mph, the transmission vibrates and thrusts. Noise goes away if above 2000 rpm or above 40 mph. It's toyota of manchester nh has been able to reproduce.waiting to see if toyota will do anything.

While driving 25 mph, i started to brake for a light.the car suddenly accelerated and it took both feet applied to the brakes to stop and avoid hitting the car in front of me.ten minutes later, another sudden acceleration occurred, followed in rapid succession by a third acceleration.

Engine has 164,000 miles and is burning 1 qt. Of oil per 1000 miles.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the water pump leaked fluid without warning. The vehicle was taken to toyota of orange (1400 n tustin st, orange, ca 92867, 714-639-6750) where the technician diagnosed that the water pump needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the warranty had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 34,000.

Just over 100,000 miles on the 2009 rav 4.without issue. Not original owner.this weekend it tried 3 times to accelerate us into the vehicles or people in front of is.after looking online i verified that our floormats are both secured and do not extend to the area of the pedal.incident 1.while sitting at a complete stop at red light, heard and felt engine start to rev.car lurched forward, and i applied left foot in addition to the right which was already on the brake in attempt to stop it.had to hit shifter into neutral to regain control only a foot or 2 from the car in front. Mistakenly thought it was an isolated incident.incident 2 today--while slowing to a red light by application of brakes with right foot, engine revved up to approx. 3000 rpm and tried accelerating us into vehicles in front of us. Again- only shifting into neutral brought vehicle under control..incident 3 - approx 20 min after incident 2 on way home ( sunday afternoon)while braking to a stop at red light.no vehicles in front by people entering the crosswalk. Heard and felt engine start to accelerate.immediate addition of right foot to the brake pedal was able to stop the car and the acceleration stopped without shifting to neutral this time.vehicle is parked awaiting reply from toyota.checked toyota website and it says there are no open recalls or service campaigns for this vin.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started there was a loud noise coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the timing pinion needed replacement. The contact also stated that the same failure occurred three other times. The vehicle was repaired under warranty. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 81,300.

Had just pulled slowly into a parking space, i took my foot off the accelerator and applied the brake.as i was applying pressure to the brake, the engine sped up to more than 7,000 rpm.(my foot was not on the accelerator.it was on the brake only.)i continued to press the brake which started to slip, and then i immediately put the transmission in neutral.as the engine reached maximum rpm's, it died back to an idle.this identical incident happened twice within 10 minutes.my parents and wife were in the car and can vouch for me.note: two months prior, this identical incident occurred while i was stopping at a busy intersection while preparing to turn left.there was astopped vehicle in front of me which i nearly hit.my wife was in the car and can vouch for me.

10 month old toyota rav-4 caught fire under the hood while sitting in parking garage and burned.

As i drove into our parking lot at work after lunch, i was idling engine with foot on brake as i pulled into a parking spot.i was already making my turn into the parking spot with foot on brake and engine idling when my car began to rapidly accelerate.i responded by applying foot brake and grabbing and pulling the emergency brake but only had about 15 - 20 feet before hitting a concrete wall at the bake of the parking spot.i managed to not hit hard enough for the air bags to deploy but there is damage to my front bumper and hood.this is the only time my car has done this.i bought it new last aug. 09 and it has approx 12,432 miles.toyota took it to quality imports toyota and "investigated" it and has found no defect.i talked to the inspector over the phone and he explained that he spent a few hours going through a series of tests attempting to find or reproduce a malfunction with no success.he told me that while my report is quite common he has never found a defect to explain sudden unexpected acceleration and that he thinks my car is safe and "he would let his daughter drive my car."i attest to the fact that a sticking accelerator and/or a slowly returning accelerator cannot explain this experience and is no "fix" for my accident.my education is in mechanical engineering and i have been an equipment mechanic on machinery for 15 years.i do not believe that just because you cannot reproduce an electronic problem in a matter of hours that the conclusion should be that there is no defect.it does not excuse the fact that there is a major problem and nothing serious is being "investigated."

I purchased my 09 rav4 in june 2009.i noticed an odd odor a few times while running the air conditioner & assumed it was from the exhaust form the cars in front of me.when i began using the heat in the fall, i started smelling a bad, burning, almost chemical smell coming out of the vents.on dec 29, 2009, i took my car to the dealership & toyota told them to replace the evaporator, cabin air filter & disinfect/deodorize the vents& that would fix the problem which they said was mold in the system.it is now feb. 23, 2010 & the smell is back & my car is sitting at the dealership because it makes me sick to drive it.the service manager is waiting to hear from toyota what to do next & says it is a problem with alot of toyotas.why hasn't there been an investigation &/or recall for this problem?it is a health issue for anyone inhaling that disgusting air from those vents.i think it needs to be looked into since i have found other complaints on-line about the same issues.is the health/safety of toyota owners not important to toyota?other than this issue, i love my rav & i really would like to be driving it instead of the yaris they loaned me until mine is fixed.

My wife was sitting at a signalized intersection in our 2009 toyota rav 4 on tuesday february 2, 2010 with her foot on the brake, when the vehicle suddenly lurched forward.she was able to keep the vehicle from traveling further by applying more pedal pressure on the brake and then shifting into neutral.while in neutral, the engine revved loudly for about 10 seconds before returning to normal idle.she brought the vehicle home but was visibly shaken up from this experience.i immediately called the toyota dealership and was told to take the vehicle in for them to check.they could not replicate this condition and thus said there's nothing that can be done at this time.this is one of the vehicles that does not have the so-called faulty sticking accelerator pedal, and floor mats did not cause this issue, so this leads me to suspect that an electronics problem is the cause and that toyota is refusing to come up with a viable fix for the situation.i called the toyota main office this morning, but was not given any satisfaction regarding this issue.meanwhile, we are stuck with a vehicle that we are both afraid to continue driving.

Sporadic burning smell when the heat is turned on.event has happened at least 6 times now and it only happens when the heat is turned on (vehicle was purchased dec 2008 and current mileage is 12,200).it has happened when running at low and high speeds - very sporadic.and it's not the air coming from the outside or from other vehicles because we've immediately stopped to check when it occurs and it's not a smell from the outside or from other vehicles.

New toyota electronics problemsmy rav4 sometimes does have intermittent accelerator 'sticking' problems, even though the accelerator pedal has fully returned to idle conditions.during the winter i often where sorels. I thought that because of my boots i was hitting both the brake and accelerator.one time i even had to push the transmission into neutral to make a stop, cursing the toyota designer who put the brake pedal so close to the accelerator (another pedal design flaw?).from then on i was very careful to keep my foot on just one pedal.however, i still noticed problems sometimes, and now this "pseudo recall" has solved a dilemma i had.the problem is not with unintended acceleration, it is with impaired deceleration.the engine is fighting against the braking system because the engine does not return to idle soon enough.with the old manual accelerator linkage systems, you could feel when you let off the gas.now instead the computer is deciding how to slow the engine.this is where the problem lies.what "bone headed" toyota engineer allowed both the accelerator and brake to work at the same time on a "drive by wire" system?there is no mechanical linkage to undo, so hitting the brake should defeat the accelerator (i.e. Quickly return the engine to idle mode).that is all that was needed to prevent this problem.this is at least one problem with the toyota electronic throttle system.it is a toyota 'myth' to insist there is(are) no electronic problem(s).what other more complex problems are there in the electronics, if this basic problem was not accounted for?

We noticed that westarted our 2009 rav4 in the morning after sitting all night, there was a rattling type noise coming from the engine. This noise only occurs after the car has been sitting.we took it to the dealership we bought it from (toyota) and after they checked it, determined it was a bad cam shaft. I asked if this was normal on a 2009 rav4 and if it was a recall. The lady stated "it is a type of recall, but not all cars are affected, so they did not send out notice to all owners."really? isn't that a "back door recall"?they are ordering the parts and will repair it under warranty.

My 2009 rav 4 has a floor mat that creeps forward and gets caught under the accelerator pedal.it took some time for it to start doing this, but now i can't keep it in place, it has no hooks. The rav is not on the recall list from toyota for this particular problem, but it has it.it happens every day, if i put it back in position and drive the car by the time i get home it's under the accelerator pedal.

Electronic power steering (eps) and fuel gauge problems:i bought my brand new 2009 toyota rav4 sport v6 4x2 on may 09, 2009 in houston texas. It was on dec. 13, 2009 that i was traveling on interstate highway i-10 from houston to new york city. I was in the middle lane of i-10 between exit 775a and 776a. I was traveling at 65 mph. Suddenly, i heard a "click" from the dash board and the eps warning light came on and then i lost the electronic power steering, i felt my steering wheel so hard and could not turn it. I realized that i was in the very dangerous driving situation. I tried to calm down and put my foot firmly on the brake pedal and started slowing down my car. It took me almost ten minutes to move my car to the road shoulder and stopped. I called mr. Zhu - a manager of sales department at my toyota dealership in houston texas immediately and reported this incident. He found me a phone number of the service department at fred haas toyota nearby and asked me to call them and get my car towed and checked. I called the number a couple of times however, nobody was there then. I tried to restart car engine for five times or more, i finally solved the eps problems. I called mr. Zhou again, and told him that nobody was there answering my phone call. I asked him for the address of the fred haas toyota. I drove my sick car for 30 minutes very carefully to fred haas toyota; unfortunately, the service department was closed on sunday. I called mr. Zhu again and told him about it. Then i drove my car back to houston on interstate i-45, after 15 minutes driving, the same problems happened again... ...after that my fuel gauge was not read correctly, it showed only 1/2 fuel of my fuel tank after i filled it up. Moving straight forward and making turns should not be an issue. I believe eps problems are more serious than the gas pedal problem, because this effects immediately and directly. I have been worrying about my safety driving my car since i experienced the dangers!

I was driving my 2009 toyota rav4 on monday april 5, 2010 and was stopped at a red light with my foot on the brake when i felt gas seemed to revup. I felt like the car would have lurched forward had not my foot been on the brake.also today after moving forward my car maintain a 20 miles an hour speed without my pressing on the gas pedal, april 13th, 2010.

At about noon on 2/3/10- our 2009 toyota rav 4 sudden acceleration (or stuck gas pedal) caused me to rear end another car that was stopped at a red light.i was moving very slowly about 5-10mph, just gliding because the car in front of me had been stopped by the light and it was just starting to slowly move as the light turned green.i had my foot on the brake, and the rav 4 seemed to accelerate, causing me to press as hard as i could on the brakes, but i could not stop before hitting the car in front of me. It seemed as if the rav4 just accelerated by itself.the rav 4 has been towed to a repair facility. 4 hours before this happened, we had the rav 4 at our toyota dealer for inspection of the gas pedal and it was confirmed that it had one of the suspect assemblies.but they said they could not do anything, as they had no instructions or parts yet from toyota and said we would be notified when the time came.

On june 8, 2014, while driving my 2009 toyota rav4, i began to slow for a stop light.several cars were already stopped.suddenly, and unexpectedly, my car began to accelerate causing me to crash into another vehicle, and forcing it into a second vehicle.after the initial impact; my engine continued to rev-up, even though my foot was off the accelerator and hard on the brakes.finally, i shifted into park and turned off the ignition.all three vehicles were damaged, two significantly.a passenger in the second vehicle expressed personal anxiety due to a 'heart condition' and possible neck injury. Both drivers filed claims on my insurance, but no damage estimates or injury claims are available as yet. A police report was filed. During 2013, i had two previous accidents and several incidents while driving this rav4, caused by sudden and unexpected acceleration.damage of about $3,000 was incurred; however, no other vehicles were involved. One accident report was filed. On several other occasions, while driving on the interstate highways, the rav4 suddenly and unexpectedly, accelerated.in each instance, i regained control of the vehicle and no accident or damage occurred. Prior to owning the rav4, i purchased a new 2008 4-door toyota camry. On numerous occasions, during the eight months i owned the vehicle, i experienced sudden and unexpected acceleration, especially at cruising speeds on the highway.becoming very uncomfortable driving it ' i traded the camry on the then new 2009 toyota rav4.as a 68 year old single working widow, i am afraid of driving the rav4 to work or on weekends.in january, 9013, a legal claims administrator for toyota motor sales, advised by letter that based on their inspection of the 2009 rav4; the 2013 accidents were 'not the result of any type of manufacturing or design defect.'

The car suddenly accelerated while turning, right, into a parking spot.i applied the brakes fully, but it wasn't enough to stop the car.the car hit another parked car then i was able to turn it off.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav-4. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the technician noticed that the canister was fractured and was leaking fuel and needed to be replaced to be able to pass inspection. The vehicle was not repaired and was not taken to a dealer. The contact called new country toyota of saratoga spring dealer, (3002 ny-50 building #1, sagatoga springs, ny 12866, (518) 584-7272) and informed them of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 137,000.

The brake was engaged in traffic when the car started to accelerate. I applied the brake more firmly and put the car in park. The engine began to rev uncontrollably in a cloud of white smoke. I switched the car off and restarted the motor and it then ran normally.

Differential gear box started to slowlyleak fluid just over 100,000 miles and eventually the rear differential carrier assy had to be replaced.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated before and during the failure. The vehicle was towed to autonation toyota winter park (225 n semoran blvd, winter park, fl 32792) where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where the transmission was repaired. The manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in a recall or warranty. The failure mileage was 110,000.

Engine attempted to accelerate on 2009 toyota rav 4 while stopped at stoplight behind other vehicles. Driver, standing on brakes, quickly put car in neutral and then park and engine returned to normal idle speed.

Have a 2009 toyota rav4. Had growling noise in rear in 2017.had rear differential coupler sub assembly replaced under warranty enhancement.now 20000 miles later in november 2018 have growling noise again and local toyota dealer says coupler would need to be replaced again.warranty enhancement expired october 2018. Toyota won't stand by new part and dealer says would cost about $1900 including labor.

At 30-40 mph there is a noise which when test driven by me with a toyota dealer described it as a shuttering noise. I am scheduled to bring my rv4 for analysis tomorrow 7/28/17.

On may 20, 2015 my 2009 rav 4 developed a whining noise in rear area that got louder the faster i went. Vehicle has 78,385 miles on it and is just out of warranty. Took to dealer and was told that it was the viscous coupler assembly that needed to be replaced at a cost of$1,806.75.i mentioned the service bulletin put out in 2013 and the multiple posts on the rav 4 forum online but they still refuse to cover the repair.

While braking (at about 5 mph) to make a turn into our carport, the vehicle began to accelerate with a rapid increase in engine rpms.in order to stop the vehicle, the gear was shifted into park (tried to shift it into neutral, but ended up in park). Car returned to idle. Immediately check the floor mat to find it was not a factor.called toyota dealership in the area and made appointment for following work day.after 1-1/2 weeks at the dealership, they checked the vehicle and said nothing was found wrong with it.he noted that the floor mats were after market floor mats and not recommended.i explained that this was checked immediately after the car returned to idle and was not a factor.he assured me that everything was checked and nothing was found wrong with the vehicle.

The brake was engaged in traffic when the car started to accelerate. I applied the brake more firmly and put the car in park. The engine began to rev uncontrollably in a cloud of white smoke. I switched the car off and restarted the motor and it then ran normally.

Growling noise from rear differential while driving. 4 months past enhanced warranty period. Recall is needed. Unsafe to drive and very expensive repair.

(no accident) a whine started in the rear of the car that got progressively more prominent over the course of a week. My mechanic discovered that the rear differential coupling hub assembly has failed. According to toyota parts manager -- and much internet 'chatter' i later discovered -- this is a wide-spread problem (they can't keep the part in stock) and there has been a tsb (0080-13/ special policy adjustment wab 2190) issued, yet toyota will not cover, or even partially cover, this known defect. It's a very expensive repair, and while a 2009 isn't under warranty anymore, it's far too new to have a problem like this.

When the vehicle travels above 25 mph, a loud whining noise can be heard from the rear-center of the vehicle. The noise progressively increases in volume as the vehicle increases its speed. Once the vehicle travels fast enough, or enough power is fed through, power of the vehicle can be affected.

When car is at 1500 rpm at 40 mph, the transmission vibrates and thrusts. Noise goes away if above 2000 rpm or above 40 mph. It's toyota of manchester nh has been able to reproduce.waiting to see if toyota will do anything.

My vehicle is listed as 4 wheel drive when driving in snowy conditions the car will kick out of 4 wheel drive if i reach 25 miles an hour.was driving in heavy snow and the car was constantly kicking out as my tires were slipping which were new tires. I was then driving in light snow and had turned on the 4 wheel drive as soon as got close to 25 mph it kicked out again.

I purchased a used 2009 rav4 with about 78,000 miles. It was a one owner with a clean car fax. It was great during the test drive. About 2 days after i purchased it, it started to make a rattle/rumble/vibration at approximately 40mph and 1500 - 1800rpm. It seems like the noise was coming from the transaxle/transmission area. The noise progressively got worse. It typically happened when on an incline. I took it into a dealer and they flashed the ecu since there were multiple tsbs out with this problem related the ecu. This helped with the problem for a week. Then the rumble came back with a vengeance. The dealer worked on diagnosing for a couple of days. The toyota engineers on the technical service line had the dealer's technician taking heat shields, plastic covers off, etc thinking something was just hitting resonate frequency and vibrating loudly. Nothing helped. Eventually the technician used listening ears and isolated the noise to the transfer case. The official diagnosis was components in the transfer case were failing. I bought this vehicle thinking toyota still were high quality. I've discovered rav4s are basically tin cans on wheels. It makes an amazing amount of creaks and rattles. When i spoke to the toyota customer service representative on the phone i was basically informed toyotas are now designed to go the 60,000 miles (the manufacturer warranty). After that it's anyone's guess how long the mechanical components will last.

My wife was parking her 2009 toyota rav4. After backing up into a space she put the car in drive and it took off, crashing into the car in front of her. My wife was petrified being my daughter ,who is six months pregnant was in the passenger seat. Thank god no one was hurt. The owner of the other car was more concerned about the well being of my wife and daughter then the damage to his car. To bad toyota didn't feel the same. Called toyota financial and reported the incident. Asked to have car towed to the dealer and did not want car anymore being my wife was afraid to drive it , being it was an unsafe vehicle. Thats when the fun started. Talking to a rude rep. I was informed that whether i wanted the car or not i was liable for the payments if the dealer had it or not. I then asked him if he gave the same response to the family's of the 34 people who have been killed with this accelerator problem or the hundreds of people who have been injured. His response was that if i did not make the payments they would screw my credit ratings for the next seven years. Hung up. Called toyota customer protection centrer. More fun. Was told i would here from a case mgr. The next day. Would have car towed to dealer and would be provided with a loaner car while said car was being inspected. 3 days later and 5 phone calls i was able to get case mgr. No loaner car would be provided, 7 to 10 day before someone would call to make an appt. To look at car, and approx. 30 days to get response. The toyota has been in the driveway for two weeks plenty of calls which are all documented and some one will call you soon. Made payment in good faith. Today is dec 15., ten days till christmas. I can see the holiday excuses coming. Maybe i mght see some one in the next few months, but remember they want their money.

Toyota rav 4 design defect complaint:1.front passenger may accidentally shift the gear stick causes it to move to neutral position, such result in the car lose of power.if a passenger accidentally push the stick and cause it to reverse position, the car get go out of control and spin into accident.2. The accidentally shifting happened once for me in the first 3 month i own the car.3. Educate passenger not to touch the gear stick.

The transmission in my 2009 toyota rav4 seems to slip.when i press on the accelerator from a complete stop, the vehicle violently jerks 2 or 3 times before it takes off.it doesn't happen every time, but it happens at least 3 times a day.

On may 26, 2016, my mother was traveling north on i-69 near eddyville, kentucky in her 2009 toyota rav4 with my son in the front passenger seat.a driver traveling south on i-69 crossed the median into the northbound lane, and collided with my mother's vehicle head-on.at the time of the collision, both my mother and son were wearing their seat belts, however, the seat belts did not work properly and contributed to my mother and son's serious injuries.during the collision, the lap belt on both seat belts tightened substantially, while the shoulder restraint never tightened or locked.as a result of the seat belt issue, my son and mother sustained significant abdominal injuries due to the extreme tightening of the lap belt, and head injuries as a result of the failure of the shoulder restraint to properly lock.specifically, my son sustained a liver laceration, pulmonary contusion, and superior mesenteric artery thrombosis as a result of the extreme tightening of the lap belt without tightening of the shoulder restraint.additionally, because the shoulder restraint failed to work properly, it did not stop his forward momentum, causing him to strike his head on the dashboard or windshield and sustain a traumatic brain injury.my mother sustained multiple rib fractures, a left pneumothorax, small bowel enterotomy, mesenteric tear, avulsion of the sigmoid colon, and tearing of her abdominal musculature as a result of the seat belt. *dt

A recall was issued on february 17, 2016 for the rear, outboard seat belts.as of august 8, 2016 the manufacture has yet to address this defect.

The front driver seat is loose to the pointthat it make sound when i break or accelerate.because the seat moves, it makes me occasionally to get distracting while i am driving.the car is under guarantee because i just bought it , but the dealer refuse to do something arguing that the car is fine. I have drive so many different cars, and all of then do not have this type of problem.

Headrests very uncomfortable.

My rav4 has rust all over where the drivers seat as well as the passenger seats are attached to the car and seems to be so fragile that with any small impact the seat will detached from car and cause a tragic accident. The rust appeared almost immediately after it was purchased and was advised by dealership that there was nothing they can do about it . If this issue is not fixed in the future it can cause injuries or even death.

Brake pedal goes very low to the floor before engaging. Seems to be a common problem that i have heard lots of complaints about for this model. In other similar cases toyota has told customers is normal.since this has started the brakes have been bled with no improvement. Also (probably a separate problem) both the back brake calipers had to be replaced because of leaking, first the right rear and later the left rear. Brakes were again bled each time, leak was gone but still a very low pedal.

It appears that a sound, suspension of the rav 4 need some repair.

The alloy wheels of my 2009 toyota rav4 are rusted and bubbling.my car has less than 10k miles on it.i think the rusting on the tires is rusting the brake pads and rotors.despite having less than 10k on my car, i'm told that my brakes and rotors need to be replaced. I could not stop by 4 wheel drive going less than 5 mph on an incline with light ice whereas other cars were able to stop.there's something defective about toyota's manufacturing of their wheels.lots of people on various forums are complaining about these rusted wheels.i think its making the cars less safe.probably contributing to the other problems that led to recalls.

Parking/emergency brake became inoperative.investigation revealed that both brake cables had corroded such that they no longer had freedom of movement at the cable end where they entered the backing plates.when i purchased replacement cables toyota service technician commented that this was a common problem on rav 4, tacoma, and other (don't remember) toyota vehicles.when i purchased & examined replacement cables during repair it was apparent that new cable design was significantly different in exactly the place where old cables had failed.this was a safety problem during time period when brakes were inoperative and clearly a significant design flaw.it was ~ $400 in parts + my labor tp replace the cables as part of repairing the emergency/parking.

My 09 toyota rav4 ( bought last august in queens new york) had the same kind ofproblem that, the car speed up suddenly and almost punch the front car when i was pushing brake, stopping and waiting for traffic light from red to green. It were happened two times last year, and also, sometimes, when the car is running on the way, the speed suddenly up. I think the problem is caused by it's control system like software poor design in anti-interfering/electronic noises.

On 2 occasions i have had the brakes on my toyota rav4 go away. I put on the brake and there is nothing there. It goes down to the floorboard. If you reapply the brakes they come back with the pedal stronger than before. I went to the toyota dealer and they appear to know what it is but discouraged me from putting the car in for repair. First they lost my "appointment" then they told me i had to leave the car for several days. Now i worry whenever i have to stop.

To begin, my car has already had the toyota recall"fix" and should have been fine. I was driving my toyota rav4 (2009) and approaching a four way stop.when i went to hit the brakes, there was a slight grinding noise.the car slowed a bit but did not stop and kept on moving through the stop sign.i ended up going through the intersection (luckily no one was coming) and coming to a stop almost 50 feet past.my husband drove the car home and we later took it to the dealer (no other incidents then).the dealer inspected the brakes and acceleration but could not find a cause.they kept the car for several days but ended up returning it to us and saying it is fine, as they could not find a specific cause to this incident.i am 8 months pregnant, and currently will not drive the car until i can be reassured this will not happen again.

On my '09 two wheel drive rav4 i have a recurring cycle occurring approximate every 700 to 1000 miles.i have too much braking.the abs system feels as if it gradually is applied to a certain point. At that point i have the wheels pulled and the abs inspected along with the manual emergency brake.usually, nothing is found. However, when the wheels are remounted and the vehicle is back on the ground, the problem goes away. The vehicle is in alignment.while the problem exists, on coming traffic pulls away from me to the right side of their lane.and traffic going the same direction as i am pulls to the left of their lane.my family has followed me and told me the vehicle tracks to the left in the front or "doglegs" down the road.it takes more gas pedal to maintain the same speed when the cycle occurs. When you lift your foot from the gas pedal (which i have had no problem with) the vehicle slows quickly. There is a rubbing in the wheels while the cycle is occurring. The delivering toyota dealer will not check out the vehicle; the service manager indicating there is nothing wrong with the vehicle yet there has been several visits to the dealership where warranty repairs have been attempted. I believe they have given up as the problem is simply over their heads. If other drivers continue to see the vehicle is not tracking straight why can repairs be made by toyota? the vehicle has appx 12,6010 and this has been occurring since 4661 miles. I now take the vehicle to independent tire & brake center during each cycle and pay myself since the dealer is no longer interested in the repairs and has indicated neither is the toyota representative.

I have a 2009 toyota rav4.i have approximately 66,500 miles on my vehicle; however, when i stop, the brakes make a whushing sound as if they are full of air.as well, the transmission/muffler is making a whirring noise as well.i have kept up to date with each routine maintenance.the last time i took my vehicle in for maintenance, the brakes were making this noise and nothing was found.

Hi,my friend has a 2009 toyota tundra that the brake pedal drifts to the floor in under 3 minutes and under 1 minute in most instances.in november of 2009 i was rear-ended by a 2009 rav4 in philadelphia, pa that had similar problems.the other driver claimed he was braking but the vehicle would not stop and he had the pedal to the floor.there was no sound of screeching tires before being rearended.

My 2009 rav4 has an ineffective and dangerous braking system. When i apply the brakes, the engine, at times, runs at a higher than normal speed when approaching a stop light or stop sign. Often i feel that i must move thetransmission lever into neutral to avoid an accident. The engine revs at about 1500 or 2000rpm when shifted into neutral. Keeping the shift lever in 'd' sometimes can cause excessively long stops. This problem happens sporadically and i don't know when it will happen. This problem started soon after, within a week, of delivery of the rav4. The vehicle was brand new with 8 miles on the odometer. I called the dealer andthe service manager told me that there was no mechanical adjustment to correct the idle speed. I hoped that the idle issue would resolve itself in time. It has only gotten worse from the frequency prospective. I am a realtor and need to take my clients to see homes. I am concerned about anyone who may in the vicinity of this dangerous vehicle and have stopped using it for my real estate activities.i brought the vehicle to the dealer for the accelerator "shim" repair on 2/26/10 within 15 miles of the service "fix"the excessive idle speed problem was still there.

I bought a 2009 rav 4 with 12 miles on it. I took it back to dealership with 1500 miles because of grinding in rotors, they told me that there was rust on it. I asked for paperwork stating this and they told me that they did not do any. I then took it back with 3200 miles on it and the same answer to rust and no paperwork again because they grounded it off. It now has 8000 miles on it and the rotors are grinding so bad that metal shavings are coming out and i am afraid to let me wife drive it. I called preston motors the dealership i bought it at and they told me they would put me on the waiting list because they have so many recalls they are handling now. What is it going to take a severe wreck to get this fixed?

1. Purchase of 2009 toyota rav4 limited edition2. Poor response in braking.requires almost twice the distance to stop.theconsequences are that you almost inevitably panic as if you were going torear end another vehicle.3. Returned vehicle to dealer who said brakes were working properly.

I have ha the car back to the dealer for this brake problem and they said this is normal ,what the problem is the brake pedal is softand when braking you foot can hit the gas pedal this also the pedal will go down when you are holding at a stop, also its not leaking brake fluid as the car was service at the dealer.

I was driving up my driveway, applied the brakes and did not stop, but was forced forward until i hit my house.i searched for the brakes but could not find them, because the brakes were stuck to the floor. There was no brake light on.before that the odometer was jumping between numbers (20,17, 54, ect.).i had my car to the toyota dealership twice and they could not find anything.i had 5 boys in my house and hit my son's bedroom, someone could of been injured.

Steering started creating occasional mild noise while turning at around 49000. At 53000 during maintenance service at burlington toyota, ontario i reported this incident along with a metallic noise when the brake pedal is pressed. They mentioned not to be able to reproduce the problem and hence did not make any fix. They refused to deal to brake noise and mentioned that my brake pad will last for much longer time and reason may be a little bit of rust. They will have to charge me for any further diagnosis even though it was within the warranty period.later i have escalated this to toyota canada, as another toyota dealer found that the shaft inside the steering column is cracked. Toyota canada claims that to be a wear and tear and refused to cover that as my warranty was over even though i have reported this problem when my vehicle was within warranty period.today november 10th, newspapers publish that more than 500,000 rav4 are recalled for steering. I called the dealer and they mentioned, this recall is only for 2006 rav4 and not for 2009. I strongly feel that toyota rav4 2009 has the same issue. I could not find an ontario site. So i could not enter my province and zip code below.

I have a 2009 toyota rav4.the steering column started making a clunking noise when turning right or left at low speeds.looks like others have had this same problem.no recall that i know of, but there should be.noticed problem shortly after 36,000 mile warranty expired so all out of pocket expense.had to replace steering shaft at dealer for $378.ouch!

At 47,500 miles, steering started making a clunking noise when wheel turned all the way to one side or the other.usually it occurred when turning the wheel back to center but not always.tended t happen in a parking lot or when a sharp turn was required.dealer repaired at a cost of almost $700.car was unsafe to drive without repair.(cost of repair covered under extended service plan which was purchased when car was purchased.)this type of serious safety issue should not happen at under 50,000 miles or even ever.

Vehicle experiences loud "clunking" noise and noticeable shaking in steering wheel while turning at slower speeds.the problem has gotten progressively worse and i am seriously concerned of steering or related subcomponent failure while driving in the midst of traffic.after doing some research i noticed my symptoms are fairly wide-spread amongst other rav 4 owners.

I started my car and attempted to reverse out of my driveway - but it started then stopped and would not move - the power steering emergency light had turned on and the power steering wasn't working. I towed the car to my toyota dealership. They told me the computer was faulty (on a 3 year old car ?!!)and i needed a new one at a part cost of about $700 and labor cost of $300-$400. The car was just out of warranty but they agreed to pay for the part if i paid for the labor. I was suspicious of why they agreed to do this, but i agreed. The following week i drove my car down my driveway and onto the road and as i was turning the power steering failed again, the light came on again, and i could not steerso i crashed into a hedge. (but i could have crashed at high speed and been killed) . I towed the car to the toyota dealership - now they tell me they are replacing the whole steering column, at no cost to me. Obviously they know there is a problem. If you google it, lots of people have had power steering issues and even crashed at high speeds. This is a life threatening fault. Please look for a pattern.

There is a noticeable thumping, like a belt slipping or a gear missing, when making sharp turns.the frequency of the issue becomes more prevalent the longer you drive.on 12/22/14, york auto group, my local toyota service department, determined there is a failure in the rack and pinion.it is my understanding from my research that some people have managed to get this repair covered by toyota since it is a potential safety issue and becoming more frequent in this model.i did contact toyota and opened case # [xxx]toyota was less responsive in my case.if this is becoming a known issue, i would like them to cover the repair and possibly alert other rav4 owners.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

When turning the steering wheel either direction at low speeds a clunking noise was audible. Car has only 50,000 miles. Looked on internet and found hundreds of reports of the problem in multiple models and over many years. The cause is the steering column shaft. Took it to dealer and that was exactly the problem! $600 to repair ! further research indicates that japan has recalled these cars for this reason already. Recall these cars now!! steering failure can eventually happen!!

Vehicle starting a popping/binding feelwhen making a turn left or right at about 36000 miles. It became more pronounced and by 42000 miles it could be felt when sitting still. Toyota tso issued to replace the intermediate steering shaft. I feel that this is a progressively dangerous condition that will cause failure and loss of life one day. Cost the replace shaft, $517.00. Search finds many, many rav4 owners have this complaint.

Would hear and feel a popping sound when truing right or left. Had car serviced a 75000 mile reported the problem to beck toyota. They said this was caused by a binding og the intermediate steering shaft and cost 544.68 dollars to replace. I did not have the shaft replaced because they would have to order one. I came home and did some research on the web. I seems that over a 100000 people have had this problem. Some have had the shaft replaced to have it fail again in a short length of time. This is a safety issue if the shaft was to hard bind a person could wreck.

Steering column creaks and sticks. At times it does not return to the neutral position. One of the people who serviced my car for tires today almost hit a retaining post due to this issue. I have also experienced the sticking of the steering in one position and had to forcibly return the steering wheel to the neutral position. I am not feeling safe in this vehicle and know that this issue is impacting the value of the vehicle.

I have ha the car back to the dealer for this brake problem and they said this is normal ,what the problem is the brake pedal is softand when braking you foot can hit the gas pedal this also the pedal will go down when you are holding at a stop, also its not leaking brake fluid as the car was service at the dealer.

Hello.i would like to add an issue to the toyota investigations.i have a 2009 toyota rav4.this model/year is included in several of the recalls.upon calling the toyota dealer i was informed that my vehicle was manufactured in japan and is not subject to the recalls.if the problems are indeed design problems, why are vehicles manufactured in japan excluded from the recalls?thank you.

I have peeling of paint on exterior surface down to the metal.it is located on top between sunroof and windshield.

I was driving and the air bag inadvertently went off, exploding in my face.the vehicle filled with smoke, dust, and debris. Because i could not see (airbag in my face and smoke/debris in the vehicle), i crashed into the vehicle in front of me.

The paint on our 2009 toyota rav4 comes of with the slightest bump from something like a branch, which should not normally cause paint to come off. Because of this we have several bare spots which are beginning to rust.

On june 6 2012 driving into a parking lot i had an un-intended acceleration on my 2009 toyota rav4 and the car only stopped because i hit my doctor's office wall. Even though i pressed the brake pedal, the car wouldn't stop. It was a very scary moment. I filed a claim with toyota manufacturer, they inspected the car onjune 19,2012. I got a letterjuly 30 2012 from toyota motor sales usa inc. That says they didn't find anything wrong with my car and that it is "operating as designed, within factory specifications" "however the inspection of your vehicle revealed no evidence of any sort of a manufacturing or design defect and we are unable to offer additional assistance".i thought my car was safe but now(thank god nobody was hurt) i don't trust this car and i lost confidence on toyota cars. I'm afraid to drive this car. This car is defective and they know it. It was a horrible experienced! i didn't make this up, this really happened to me.on aug 1st 2012 on press releasetyt recalled rav4 subs and lexus to fix the suspension of rav4s from 2006 to 2011 models. Other law firms have told me that the un-intended acceleration has to happen several times to be considered as complaint/recall per lemon law and that if tyt says there's nothing wrong with it, there's nothing they or i can do. I'm outraged to say the least! can you help? thanks for your time.

Rust on the latches that hold the rear door on the 2009 toyota rav4. Although not a major concern at this time, however when the rust does get worse the door will not seal exhaust and/or will open in a accident or while driving. This can be a hazard. I can email photos of the latches. If you want them. Toyota motor corporation and its dealership network are not wanting to repair this problem. I thought i can bring up the issue here and please contact me for further information. The repair is simple since the latches are held on with easily removed hardware. Toyota is not wanting to repair a simple issue that can become a serious safety issue in the near future.

Sheets of the paint started to come off while going down the highway.

Had to reclose hood.

We have taken it to the toyota dealer twice and had them replace the tie rods twice and it won't stay in alignment. I have called the dealer multiple times to schedule it to be fixed and called corporate and they won't do much and it won't stay in alignment and they won't fix it right. The car is very scary to drive with it being out of alignment and no other mechanic will touch it because they have a sticker saying it can only be adjusted by toyota because they glue the tie rods in place. Toyota said if we have replaced by an outside source because the dealer won't call us back they will not help cover it. They won't allow us to go to another dealer as well.

Received notification last fall of recall for rear lower suspension arm.when dealership was contacted they said that it would be in the spring before a formal recall would be issued.received the formal recall and the dealership said they didn't have the parts and i would be put on a waiting list.

My problem is upon inspection of the vehicle i was told a recall (16v596000) for my rear suspension arms was available and i needed to have it done as the back end nuts couldn't be adjusted. I called a dealership and was told this was taken care of 3 years ago, yet the problem still remains.

I just want to know how long toyota has to repair the rear suspension arm that you recalled, it seems around a couple of years ago? i've heard nothing from them about repairing this problem, just that they are working on trying to find a resolution.in the meantime, i am driving an unsafe vehicle. Thank you for your help.

Safety recall #csj: i received a letter 2 weeks ago, stating that my car has to be brought a dealership to re-inspect the rear lower suspension arms. I did this today, and was informed after 3 hrs that my suspension arms have developed rust and thus need to be replaced, as outlined in the recall letter. However, i was also told that the arms are currently unavailable and it may take a month or longer before they can be exchanged. Toyota had set as completion date for this procedure for my region march 2014, i.e. Over 2 months ago. I find it unreasonable that i need to return my car again for another 3hr procedure. It is inconvenient and i will miss work again. Also, i have not received any definite assurance that my car is safe to drive for another 1 or longer without the repair.

The dealer was contacted (toyota of manhattan in new york, ny) where it was diagnosed that the alignment was not performed due to a failure with the suspension. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 71,700.

I was told today that my left rear suspension is not right it is off and can cause harm.i was told by toyota dealers that they fixed it, i cannot get my car an alignment in the rear due to this.

Safety recall issued may 1, 2014 by toyota for rear lower suspension arms (no. 1).i have contacted the dealer toyota darcars on cherry hill road in silver spring, md301 622 0300 on may 5, june 6, august 4 and sept 29, 2014 in an attempt to have the recall completed. Each time i was informed that they did not have the parts and i will be put on a waiting list for service once available. I get the same answer on every call and was told to contact toyota customer service. I contacted customer service twice and they as of today transferred me to toyota corporate to register a complaint. Corporate advised that the parts were on national backorder and there was nothing they could do. After five months and follow up notices from corporate reminding me that i had not completed the service work when they can't even get me in to have repairs completed is absurd and poor customer service. Need focus on this to correct parts shortage.

I received a recall notice for "rear lower suspension arm no. 1. I called servco toyota leaward to make an appointment and they said the earliest available was march 30, 2015. Next year!!! really?

Since this car was bought on sept 18, 2009 it has had a shimmy problem.dealer could never find anything wrong but would do an alignment and tire rotation when he took it in for an oil change at 19,265 mi onnov 8, 2011, they told my fatherhe needed tires and that a lug nut was missing. He took it down the block to a tire shop who stated the car was unsafe to drive without at least 2 new tires and an alignment.then on may 20, 2012 replaced the other 2 tires at 23,192 mi.he has had problems with the lug nuts replacing 3 different ones now.the last lug nut that was missing the lug stud was broken also. When i took it to the dealer to be to have 2 of the recalls fixed and the lug stud replaced on nov 30, 2012 they even said these rav4's have been having these issues.we just received a fifth recall notice,a second recall on the suspension. Corporate does not fill any of the above issues are related nor their responsibility, that we need to go to the original tire manufacture regarding the tire issue, they also stated his warranty expired in sept 2012. My father has the 7yr-70,000 mile platinum warranty,(the last dealership i took it to also stated the warranty had expired on 9/12/2012).toyota corp gave me the ph no for extra care extended warranty regarding the lack of coverage and saidto was possibleif we actually had the extended warranty that they could do something for us.when i spoke with them they stated the warranty was in the national system and had no reason as to why they'd question that.when i explained the continual problems he said corp needs to address. Everyone points the finger at others.the car currently has 26,900 mi.my father has been very ill the past 1 1/2 years and is unable to deal with these issues.my father hates this car, the dealership in vacaville purchased from &he does not feel safe driving this vehicle.

Car has been making noise in the front wheel area while driving and turning, took it back to where purchased, planet toyota in matteson, ill, was told the right strutwas damaged and binded, also cup was damaged on both struts, i find this odd seeing as how the car only has 80,000 miles on it. We bought the car used and also purchased an extended warranty which by the way, does not cover it.

I now regrettably own a 2009 toyota rav4. I bought this vehicle in september 2013 from a car max dealer in pompano beach florida. I was not told that the car had two recalls that have not been taken care of. I brought car back to car max several times, they did various repairs, new brakes and alignment. Then i looked online and saw that this car has two recalls. I brought the car to toyota of deerfield beach florida and was told by the mechanic that this particular model was not on recall. I continued to drive this car but the steering is very loose and the wheel do not line up properly. I called toyota usa and they told me that this car is on recall to bring it back to the dealer. I brought it back to toyota of deer beach and was told by the manger[xxx], that they had already inspected the car and any further inspection would cost me money. I called toyota usa back, while still at the dealer and had then talk to [xxx]but this did not help. He refused to inspect the car or offer any remedy. He said that i could pay $89.00 for an alignment. I went home and called toyota usa again. Then they told me that the car was inspected in may 2013 before i owned it. I asked, what was the out come of the inspection. They could not answer, merely stated that i will be contacted by them and that there are not parts available for the recall. One of the recalls concerns the rear suspension, etc.that they can wear outand may cause damage. The other is the computer system that needs to be reprogrammed so that the driver doesn't step on the gas instead of the breaks. Driving in to work in the morning, speed was 25 mph on a suburban road, south street in tewksbury ma, as i went over rough area in the road, i heard a thump from under the car. I pulled over and foundthe right rear suspension struts let go.i pulled in to a parking lot to examine what happened. Part of the strut was hanging down scraping on the ground. The right rear tire was skewed in the wheel well rubbing on the inside of the wheel well. The strut has an eye with a bushing in it, where a bolt is used to bolt it to the car's main frame, the bolt was missing allowing the suspension to fall apart.if this had occurred at highway speeds, loss of control of the vehicle would have occurred. There was a recall on this vehicle, i have had it in twice at the dealership, once to have it repaired, a second time to ensure it was ok. A month ago it was taken in for an oil change and tire rotation, all done at the dealership. Car has been towed back to the dealership, i was informed by the dealer that the "bolt" let go, apparently the one holding the strut to the main frame of the car.when this occurs, the wheel cannot be held in place and rides up in to the wheel well.

I brought my 2009 toyota rav 4 into the romano toyota (6400 basile roweeast syracuse, ny 13057) service department after receiving a recall notice for possible rusting in the rear suspension bar. The service department assured me that they had thoroughly checked the recalled part, and everything was fine. 5 months later, i was driving 55 mph on a 3-lane highway, and i suddenly lost control of my car. When i was able to look at my car, the rear passenger tire was hanging at a 45 degree angle to the car. An independent auto body shop confirmed that the rear suspension bar (the part that was recalled, and that toyota assured me was perfectly fine 5 months before), had completely rusted through. Romano toyota refused to discuss the problem with us, and simply repeated that "if they looked at the part, then it was fine." while toyota corporate confirmed the findings of the independent auto body shop and reimbursed us for the costs of repair, as far as i'm aware, toyota has not taken any steps to ensure that this terrifying (and potentially deadly) experience does not happen to another driver.

In 2013, toyota issued a recall on the rear lower suspension arms. This vehicle was taken and had the recall work done on 7/19/14. One arm was replaced, and one was coated with an epoxy coating. The car began pulling to the left while driving and wastaken to firestone for an alignment, at which we were told that the rear toe was out of alignment and needed to be looked at by the dealer. The recall work done in july 2014 involved applying an epoxy that made this part no longer adjustable.on 2/25/17, the vehicle was taken the toyota dealer, which failed an alignment check at the rear toe. We were told that they could no longer perform a rear alignment due to this recall "fix" that permanently sealed it into one place. We were told that in order to get the car back into alignment, we would have to replace the entire rear toe bar for a cost of 600 dollars. We contacted the corporate office and were offered a 10% discount to get the work done. My car was manufactured with an adjustable rear tie rod,and toyota's solution to an engineering flaw is to make therear tie rod no longer adjustable, thus costing the consumer hundreds of dollars to fix a simple alignment issue. It is not feasible or fair to expect the consumer to pay hundreds of dollars for an alignment issue, when toyota created the issue with their "fix" instead of creating a replacement rear toe that is adjustable like the car was manufactured with when i purchased it. The car pulls to the left significantly when going at highway speeds, and this is a safety issue to me and my two young children.

I received urgent safety recall notice for rear lower suspension arms (no. 1) on may 19, 2014.when i called the toyota dealership for an appointment to have this safety recall taken care ofi was told that the parts are on national back order and would be 1-2 more weeks.i was placed on a list to be called when the parts come in.since then i have called a couple of more times to the dealership just to check on the status of the parts.now i am being told that they do not know when the parts will be in.there is a shortage of parts to fix this urgent safety recall.i believe this is untimely for the type of safety recall this is.toyota needs to do more and get these parts in to fix this problem now! i would buy a new car if i could just to get rid of this one. I believe my life (and everyone else who owns a car under the recall) depends on this safety recall being done immediately.looking through the paperwork on line it shows only 3.9% completion rate with a recall that started well over a year ago....

I have had several issue with the rv4, all related to the rear suspension. The recal for toyoa with part of the suspension leaksunbolted from the car while traveling at about 30 mph. The right rear tire went up in to the wheel well. Only because of the slow speed did i not get in to an accident. Vehicle had to be towed to the dealer. At 65k miles, i took the car in again to the shop. Both rear linkages to the anti-sway bar were broken and had to be replaced. Again another issue with the rear suspension.

The vehicle was towed to tejas toyota (19011 us-59, humble, tx 77338, (281) 446-0271) where it was diagnosed that the failure was not related to a recall; however, the suspension arm was loose along with the bolts. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 13v383000 (suspension) on september 22, 2015. The manufacturer was notified and a case was opened. Rear suspension arms were replaced due to a recall. It was found a year later, that the rear tires were out of alignment.during this time, the handling of the car on turns and in wet weather were impaired. Also, the tires wore unevenly and were bald on the inside. I found out, that the recall fix replaced the original adjustable arms with non-adjustable arms and the car could not be aligned. Toyota wanted $830 to replace the arms again in order to align it. This would mean every time the car needed an alignment of the rear wheels, new rear arms would have to be purchased. That car has been altered from the original design to the advantage of toyota. ..updated 03/10/16

2009 toyota rav4 leaked fluid. I lost control of car, steering, brakes & car accelerated at a rapid pace on its own. I was turning left at about 20mph hit another car accelerated fast with no control was headed for a building when right tire went over a concrete parking block left side was on grass when the left front wheel snapped off & the car stopped. The car was repaired & paid for by my insurance co. As well as the other car involved. The car had extensive damage to the suspension. I was not cited by police because it was obvious the fluid followed my car until it stopped. I don't agree with the nhtsa findings on toyota's acceleration problems. The people "testing" the problem should drive one of these toyotas when it accelerates & feel the fear i had during this accident. Thank the lord i was not on the expressway. I want to enter a class action suit against toyota because i am a senior citizen & living on a fixed income. I live in ohio. I have driven 52 yrs. & have received 1 ticket 15 yrs. Ago for failing to stop at a stop sign. I am disappointed our government is ignoring this complaint against toyota acceleration. I hurt my shoulder trying to get the jammed door open but it is getting better with therapy. Toyota took their "event data recorder" out of my car gave me a flash drive with the codes on it but toyota is the only one who can decipher their codes. You must take their word for the coding decipher. My car had 22,922 miles on it still under 3 yrs warranty & they denied my claim. I received a letter stating this but the letter had wrong information in it. They had the wrong toyota dealer i used on the recalls the wrong date i took my car for the recall. The dealer isn't even in my area. This was a form letter that someone used for someone else & failed to change the fields in the letter. I need anyone's help whether it be class action or a lawyer to do contingency work. Please post if anyone has had this acceleration problem. Lets not let toy. Get by.

Occasionally the car will try to accelerate, when the foot is on the brake off the accelerator.this has happened at least four times since purchasing this new vehicle in sept. Of 2009.

I put my rav 4 2009 in park while running and got out of the car and talked to my mail carrier, went around my car to my mailbox and all of a sudden, my car took off accelerating and backed out of the driveway, i tried to get the car but it was moving too fast it hit a tree.now i keep it in er brake when i get out.toyota dealers claim they cannot check to see what happened.i am sorry as to what to do, i had a witness to this incident i am afraid of my own car, i do not know when it will do it again. Was told i should be glad i did not get run over when i walked behind it.

The driver's side sun visor flops down and won't stay up.this results in impaired vision and can startle a driver into losing control of the vehicle.

On may 10, 2011 i experienced sudden unintended acceleration and then intermittently until on august 31, 2011 i experienced 3 even more dramatic unintended accelerations within about 40 minutes.i took the car to my nearby mechanic who told me this was something that requires the attention of toyota dealer. The local dealer called in a toyota regional specialist in unintended acceleration who concluded after tests that everything appears to be normal. He did indicate that braking can actually cause revving which sounds like unintended acceleration & perhaps that is what i experienced. He also said that toyota is considering building future models with greater distance between the accelerator and brake pedals & they may also elevate the brake pedal so there is more separation between these 2 pedals and thus less likelihood of one's foot drifting between them. In conclusion, there remains in my mind an uncertainty as to what has been the cause of the unintended and scary acceleration i experienced.it may have been caused by accelerator pedal or ironically by the use of the brake pedal.if the latter, perhaps toyota needs to make an appropriate modification so that neither pedal can cause unintended acceleration.

2009 toyota rav 4, 2.5l v4, 4wd. A couple of weeks ago, i was driving like normal, and when i pressed the gas, the car didn't move. I turned it off and started it up again and put my foot on the gas pedal and it moved and then i hit the brake and it didn't move when i hit the gas. The rpm increases but the car does not move forward or in reverse. The car starts just fine and it will move for about 30 seconds - basically before it's warmed up. Then after 30 seconds, if i hit the gas, regardless of putting it in reverse, drive, it won't budge. This is a big safety concern, as this happened while i was driving and there were several cars behind me. I immediately turned on my hazard lights.

2009 toyota rav-4driven by owner with wife as passenger.coming down off ramp from two lane road to stop signin order to turn onto a town street.although braking hard, car failed to stop and engine decidedly accelerated.driver able to turn corner and, since no car coming in his lane, was able to pull to side of road.driver decided to proceed 2-3 blocks to a gas station.drove slowly to station, pulled in, car refused to stop, in fact it was jerkily accelerating, and bumped into a car whose driver was putting gas into it.no damage to either car or persons. (pressed yes for crash, but was only going about 5 mph or less and driver's car pushed other car into a street.)driver was able to put car in neutral and car stopped.driver had car towed to toyota dealer whose service manager, after telling driver his rav-4 was made in japan and not eligible as a recall car, finally agreed to have car tested.nothing found and toyota has refused to replace any parts saying there is nothing wrong with car--to them the incidents did not truly occur.after testing, twice, driver picked up car and was driving home, had to stop for a school bus and while stopped felt engine surging forward again but was able to keep car steady by putting on brakes and put car in to neutral.only drives car on back roads now.these three incidents are the only ones that have been experienced thus far.

On sunday, august 28, 2011 at approximately 12 in the afternoon, i was driving my family's 2009 toyota rav4 with my wife and infant son, eastbound on highway 44 between winner, sd and platte, sd. With the vehicle's cruise control set at the speed limit of 65 mph, i changed lanes and began to pass the truck ahead of our vehicle on this two-lane country road. Increasing the vehicle's speed to 70 mph to complete the pass of the other vehicle and return to the eastbound lane, the toyota rav4 unintentionally accelerated to speeds in excess of 85 mph. At the time of the sudden unintended acceleration, the pedal area was checked and confirmed to be clear of any obstructions, including the vehicle's driver-side floor mat. With the cruise control off and the brakes cautiously applied, the toyota rav4 would not slow down from its state of sudden unintended acceleration. It was determined that the only way to take back control of the vehicle was by completely pressing the brakes to the floor; however, the decrease in speed was gradual at best, and the engine continued to rev out of control. The vehicle's brakes were fully engaged in this way until the vehicle stalled out, partially onto the shoulder of the road at a speed just under 10 mph. Again at this time, the pedal area was checked and confirmed to be clear of any obstructions, including the vehicle's driver-side floor mat. Over the last two years, the vehicle has had three accelerator pedal recall repairs and one floor mat recall repair completed and is not reprogrammable for the brake override system that is being installed in the newest toyota models. With no crash resulting from the aug. 28 incident, the vehicle was rejected for an inspection or any further services. As this was a very scary and traumatic situation for my family, the toyota rav4 has not been operated under the same driving conditions since the incident.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that he started the ignition and shifted from park into drive when suddenly, the accelerator pedal became stuck to the floorboard with a rapid increase in engine rpms. In addition, the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact mentioned that there was a huge pile of snow that stopped the vehicle however the wheels were still spinning. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 98,000.

April 4, 2010topic: communication of engine accelerationfrom:omittedvehicle:-toyota rav4-purchased 9/26/09--year/model: 2009/4443a-engine: 3.5 liter dohc v6 engine with dual vvt-i-purchased from: germain toyota of columbusproblem:today, april 4, 2010, my wife was backing the rav4 into our car garage. Upon getting the car completely on the floor of the garage (a level surface), she was idling in reverse so that the suv would finish backing up to insure the garage door would go down without hitting the front of the vehicle. Suddenly, the engine revved up a few hundred rpms. With her foot already on the brake pedal she immediately pushed down very hard on the brake pedal and pushed the console gear shift into neutral. Thus, my wife was able to prevent the suv from immediately speeding up in reverse which prevented the vehicle from ramming into the garage wall which was approximately 4 to 5 foot from the back of the vehicle.the above action by my wife may have taken 2-3 seconds. However, after getting the rav4 into neutral , the engine immediately revved up to a few thousand rpms. Within a very few seconds my wife turned the motor off. Fortunately, the vehicle was in neutral when this engine revving occurred.i was in the house in a room directly above the garage and heard both times of the engine revving.my wife also had a similar revving up of the engine that occurred approximately 5 days previous to march 4, 2010 while sitting at a red light. She held the brake pedal down. She only needed to hold the brake pedal down for 1 -2 seconds before she could take her foot off the brake to allow the car to go through the light that just changed to green. Upon letting up on the brake pedal to go forward the rpms immediately reduced. Also, the revving of the engine this time was comparable to the initial engine revving stated above for a few hundred rpms.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While driving approximately 10 mph and making a left turn, the vehicle suddenly experienced unintended acceleration and the engine rpms suddenly increased. The driver quickly switched the transmission into the neutral position in order to slow down the vehicle. The contact indicated that the failure occurred on three separate occasions. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The local dealer (page toyota, 21262 telegraph rd, southfield, mi) was notified of the failure, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 32,000.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While exiting a fuel station and attempting to depress the brake pedal, the contact's foot became trapped between the rug and the accelerator pedal. The vehicle accelerated and crashed into another vehicle. There were no injuries and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the damage was repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 11v113000 (vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 76,000.

2009 rav4 toyota was traveling about 30-35 mph when the vehicle rapidly accelerated. The engine rpms increased significantly and a loud sound was heard from the engine revving. The brake pedal was immediately depressed firmly and the vehicle was able to slow down.the vehicle was stopped and the engine shut down.after turning the car back on there were no further incidences.the vehicle was taken to the dealership of purchase.an inspection was done by toyota representatives and the inspection came back with no unusual report.the vehicle that i purchased in new condition is unsafe and i am stuck with a car that i do not feel comfortable driving.it has been parked since february and is no longer being used.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while reversing at approximately 5 mph, the vehicle independently accelerated without warning. The vehicle was able to be stopped. On another occasion, the contact stated that after switching into the drive position, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning. As a result, the contact crashed into a tree. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was not filed. The contact sustained neck and back injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was not diagnosed however, the body damage was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 47,000.

On july 17, 2010 husband and i were driving our "leased" 2009 toyota rav4 on busy highway leading to and from the beach. We were in weekend traffic, moving a car length every 10 minutes. This should take us 5 minutes to drive on this road but this day it took us over 30 minutes! sitting in traffic, my husband's foot on brake, car makes grinding noise (like we had car in neutral revving the engine). Car lunged forward hitting car in front of us, bounced back, lunged forward a 2nd time hitting car. Realizing damage we turned car off. 911 called. Took car immediately to dealership, informed them of mishap, showed them our slight damage to the car, got loaner car till 9/8/10 when investigating company took out black box. Investigator ruled it "driver error". We were made to remove car from their lot. Husband nor i will drive car - it is a death trap (even though we took it to dealership when recalled in the spring). Will not let anyone drive as passenger in this dangerous car. We continue to pay our $280 monthly payment. Wrote to toyota president and toyota investigator. We would take a replacement (this is a leased car). We are "deathly" afraid of this car. We were not even moving and this car accelerated. Now we are charged for this accident. I would not be able to go on if my husband should one day decide to drive this car and it accelerated while he was driving. He may be killed and take other peoples' lives with him! this was definitely "sticky gas pedal" problem with a toyota vehicle!!!updated ivoq 10/15/10

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)this is in regards to complaint # 10325940 on a 2009 toyota rav 4. The detail in the report is correct with the exception of the vehicle was not driven to the nearest dealer. The vehicle was taken to the nearest dealer on a flatbed tow truck. The vin # for this vehicle is [xxx] . The dealer claimed to have done an approximate 10 mile road test and the diagnostics toyota recommended that they do. Then after treating us not very nicely at all gave us the standard "it was caused by a floormat" excuses eventhough they claimed that they could not recreate the incident using a floor mat. They returned what is in my opinion an unsafe vehicle to us without having any concrete proof of what happened.

At a local mall i was stopped and waiting for a parking spot to become available. When a parking spot became open, i was within 5' to 10' foot ofthe parking spot entrance. While making 90% right swing from a dead stop i lightly put pressure on the accelerator pedal of our 2009 toyota rav4 it lunged forward and accelerated rapidly i applied the brake pedal hard but was not able to totally stop the car in the short distance of the parking space and at about 1 to 2 miles per hour our auto hit a cement 'lled yellow post divider that separated my parking area from the one ahead, leaving us with a cracked lower grill and sightly dented bumper. Luckily no one was injured, but we were visibly shaken. I took our auto to the toyota dealer service dept. And theyperformed what they called a> health check test< .in their report they stated> all systems operating properly -- no adverse operation noted < .we received our 2009 rav4 on july 29, 2009. From the beginning till the present we have had a lunging or a rapid start from {a complete stop} to {a start- -take off }with very little pressure on the accelerator, when the problem manifests it self the acceleration is fast enough to throw people back in their seats, this happens randomly about 20% of the time, {etc} given or taken of the est. Time frame unknown, you never know when or how often it may happen in a row. Time frame has not been identied so far. I have had this checked by the same service dept. Three times so far, last time on feb. 17, 2010 at the same time the recall a0a pedal reinforcement plate was installed. Again report of> health check test < performed> all systems operating properly -- no adverse operation noted <.i have also called toyota american headquarters in calf. And addressed this matter with themto date i have been given no resolve. I believe, and can it also be possible : maybe a software program glitch:

The contact owns a 2009 rav4. While driving down a hill she experienced unintended vehicle acceleration. She had to shift the vehicle into the neutral gear in order to stop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and a technician concluded thatfloor mat interference caused the failure. An engineer sent from the manufacturer will re-inspect the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were 10,000. The vehicle identification number was unavailable.

Intermittent sudden acceleration in a 2009 toyota rav4 without further depression of the gas pedal which causes the vehicle to lurch forward.the gas pedal is not jammed or slow to raise nor does it stick.this has happened on numerous occasions since march 2009 with no common denominator such as speed, road conditions, etc.this has even happened when the vehicle was in park and without the gas pedal being depressed at all, the vehicle will race suddenly and just as quickly go back to idle.the date of the first incident and the mileage listed below are approximations.

Since i bought my 2009 toyota rav4 (6cyl) in july 2009, i have experienced consistent jackrabbit starts.the day after i bought it, i discussed this with the salesman who handled my transaction.he seemed unconcerned and told me to discuss it with the service department at the 5000 miles check.virtually every time i attempt to smoothly accelerate from a stop, i am thrown back into my seat and the vehicle accelerates rapidly.on a couple of occasions i nearly hit the car in front of me.on feb 1, 2010, i brought this to the attention of the service department of michael's toyota in bellevue, wa, when i took my vehicle in to have the accelerator pedal checked - mine was a denso and did not require modification.they reported "no defect," and that my vehicle drives like every other rav4.if that is the case, there is no doubt a risk that this jackrabbit tendency will cause accidents.i am convinced that the combination of toyota's electronic accelerator pedals and the hardware/software toyota uses to control the engines are faulty.i have listed the date of incident as the day i bought the rav4, but the jackrabbit accelerations happen every day!

I have a 2009 toyota rav4 that has unexpectedly accelerated 3 times. When i tried to brake the pedal was hard and the car accelerated. I threw it in neutral and took my foot off the brake. The car didn't rev like the pedal was stuck, instead it calmed down and came under control. Dealer says they can't find anything wrong.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav 4. The contact was driving approximately 5 mph turning a corner and the vehicle began a jerking motion. A sudden loss of power steering occurred without warning. The vehicle surged forward and continued acceleration. The vehicle slowed down after pressure was applied to the brake pedal. The failure occurred periodically. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician was unable to duplicate the problem. The acceleration failure was updated in the database. The vehicle had prior recall repair performed and the remedy repair failed to correct the problem. The contact states there are two people in the family that drive the vehicle and two people have experienced acceleration failure of the vehicle. The failure mileage was 13,285. The current mileage was 14,000.

As i was leaving a parking lot i depressed the brake as there was ongoing traffic coming on the road i was entering.the car accelerated and continued to race as i put increasing pressure on the brake and the car did move forward slightly.this happened twice on a car that had less than 900 miles.i have stopped driving the car, a toyota 2009 rav 4.it was picked up by a toyota dealer just recently and is being tested.based on their comment that in the past they have been unable to reproduce this problem even though there are more and more reports of this problem.i currently have 3 other cars and have never experienced this problem.in fact in over 40 years of driving this have never occurred before.it is obviously a car failure not a driver problem.this is a serious accident waiting to happen.

2009 rav-4 toyota was traveling up a gravel driveway.as it proceeded up an incline the car rapidly accelerated.the driver tried the brake to no avail.fearing that she would be unable to stop, she veered off the driveway into the woods.the car hit several small trees and then turned over on its side.the airbag was deployed.highway patrol report was made.incident was reported to dealership.dealership directed the call to california toyota office.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact was approaching a traffic stop and while attempting to apply the brakes, the engine exhibited an unusual increase in engine rpms. The vehicle attempted to accelerate but did not because of steady pressure to the brakes. The dealer performed a diagnostic but could not duplicate the failure. The manufacturer would not provide any assistance. The failure and current mileages were 5,404.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle lunged or rapidly accelerated from a complete stop. In one instance, he applied the brake pedal but was not able to stop the vehicle. At approximately 2-3 mph, he hit a cement divider in a parking lot which caused damage to the lower grill. He also noticed that the failure randomly occurred about 20% of the time while driving. He took the vehicle to the dealership and was told that they could not find anything wrong. On 02/17/2010, the dealer installed a metal plate behind the accelerator pedal three times. He called the manufacturer and spoke with a representative who instructed him to take the vehicle back to the dealership. The contact stated that the problem still occurred even after the repair was performed. The current mileage was approximately 5,100. The failure mileage was approximately 400.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4.the contact was driving approximately 5 mph into a parking space and when pressure was applied to the brake pedal the vehicle accelerated excessively.the vehicle failed to slow down and crashed into a vehicle.the emergency brake was engaged during the failure.there were no personal injuries.the police were called to the scene.a police report was filed.the vehicle was operable; however, it was taken to a body collision center for repair.the cause of failure has not been determined at this time. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 10v017000 (vehicle speed control;accelerator pedal).however, the vin was excluded from the recall defect since the manufacturer was located in japan.the failure mileage was 5,000.

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While parked, the contact attempted to shift into reverse but the vehicle suddenly revved up. The contact depressed the brake pedal firmly and shifted into neutral. The contact stated that rpms decreased and the vehicle behaved normally after five seconds. The contact planned to take the vehicle to an authorized dealership. The failure mileage was 9,264. The current mileage was 9,674. Updated 06/29/10updated 09/21/10

While coming to an intersection, i was braking. During the braking, the vehicle suddenly bolted (accelerated) ahead for a period of 5 seconds. (vehicle accelerated during braking process ) i continued to keep foot on brake, pressingwith a lot more force.during the "incident", i was able to turn wheelsharply to the right, to avoid hitting a vehicle directly in front of me.needless to say, i was very shaken, as was my 100% disabled husband, also in the front seat. We took vehicle to toyota dealer, on ebruary 10, 2010,(2, 766total mileage) and 30minutes of their time was given to my toyota. They checked it over, trying to find the problem. They said "they could not find a problem"., and sent me on my way. They gave me an "800" number to call, and our 2 phone calls to them, was a waste of time. They said they would send me arbitration papers, which i have not received. I don't see why i have to go to arbitrationfor them to fix my vehicle, when it is still under warranty.* they resetecm/pcm test drove op code 895994 3/99. Checked ecu for dtc scan tool check dtc and operation. Hours 0.50 dealer refuses to do more testing because toyota will not authorize it.i feel that my vehicle is "a death trap" and i will not drive it.in the meantime, i am still making monthly payments on it, and consider it a "dead horse payment" .

Currently, i own a 2009 rav4 that was not apart of the recall due to the fact the car was manufactured in japan.however, i am experiencing sudden acceleration in my vehicle and toyota is doing nothing to resolve this issue. On a daily basis when i drive the car and i am pressing on the accelerator pedal the car suddenly jerks and the rpm's jump and jerks me forward.i find that it happens more frequently on a rainy or wet days but does occur everyday. This car is a safety hazard and i have been told by toyota that it is the way i am driving however, my husband drives my car and experiences the same thing when stepping on the accelerator pedal.toyota needs to fix my problem.

Drove up to use the atm at bank. Placed car in park and used atm.when i finished, i put my foot on the brake and shifted into drive. Car engine accelerated and car lurched forward.a large cloud of smoke came out of the exhaust pipe.i was able to put the car in neutral and turn off the engine.putting the car in neutral did not stop the engine from racing.i pushed the car away from the atm and called the toyota dealer, who came and drove the car to their garage.the dealer found no record of the event on the cars computer and has twice tried to return the vehicle to me.only after i threatened to go on a local radio talk show, did the agree to continue to investigate.i was able to obtain video of the incident from the bank's security cameras and have shared them with the toyota dealer and would be happy to share them with the nhtsa. My wife told me that her toyota rav 4 seemed to surge forward when she was trying to stop.a few days later i was driving her car and was approaching a stop light that had just turned red.i started to slow down and apply the brake and the toyotasuddenly accelerated and lurched forward.fortunately, there was no car in front of me or i would have rear-ended it.i immediately put it in neutral and put both feet on the brake and the engine accelerated to approximately 5000 rpm.i turned the ignition off and pulled over.after the engine shut off completely, i restarted the car and managed to get home safely.i called the dealer, leith toyota, and they said to bring the car in right away.they kept the car several days and ran some tests, drove the car but because they were unable to replicate the same mechanical or electronic problem, they could not or would not do anything to fix the problem.so i feel that i am left with a vehicle that is not safe to drive.after learning that so many people have had the same problem, it is now obvious that toyota and leith toyota sold us this vehicle knowing the problem existed.the government needs to hold toyota and the dealerships responsible and liable for any accidents that occur from this problem and reimburse consumers that purchased and own vehicles that are unsafe due to this mechanical/electronic problem.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While coming to a stop and placing the vehicle in park, the vehicle accelerated independently once the brake pedal was released. The vehicle crashed into a building. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the cause of the failure was undetermined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000.

Given the news about toyota accelerator pedal issues and now 2010 prius abs issues, i feel it's important to report the following: in october 2009, my 2009 toyota rav4 experienced the following issue (this is taken directly from toyota dealer's service invoice): "customer states brake pedal goes to the floor and doesn't feel like the vehicle is stopping properly. Please advise. Depresses all the way happens intermittently. Tech verified customer concern poor brake pedal case # ta092880189. Replaced master cylinder/replace abs actuator. Replace abs actuator per tech assist rec opn # 44050-42330."in other words, we had observed that when applying the brake pedal, it often depressed quickly and nearly all the way to the floor before providing normal brake pedal resistance and braking action sufficient to slow and stop the car's forward progress, and at that point with very little brake pedal physical depression space left before reaching the pedal's limit. After i originally brought the issue to my local toyota dealership (lexington toyota, lexington, ma, 781.861.7400), they informed me they had not previously seen this issue and had to consult with toyota's u.s. Headquarters for troubleshooting aid. Then for several days the dealership provided me with ongoing updates, explaining that toyota was actively investigating the matter and did not have an immediate recommended solution. This went on for nearly a week, and so it seemed to me that this was a problem toyota hq had not prevously encountered. Finally the dealership reported that toyota hq had provided a resolultion, the repair work was done, and we got our rav4 back and have had no brake pedal problems since. According to our local dealer, our rav4 was manufactured in japan and therefore isn't subject to the current accelerator pedal recall but does require the floormat-related recall fix.

I own a 2009 toyota rav4.my car was not stopping prior to recall-spoke with toyota and they contacted dealer to come to my home and pick up my car, as it was not stopping for my and i would not drive the car.recall (accelerator pedal reinforcement bar) performed 2/5/2009.i called dealership to schedule another appointment as the gas pedal is very touchy and my car is accelerating when my foot is on the brake and i can not stop car.the dealership looked at car and told me that there was no problem-the standard line "our service technician was unable to duplicate customer concern".i again have a car that has a safety concern that will not stop at times and toyota is unwilling to resolve this issue for me.

Th- the contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact had the vehicle speed control accelerator pedal recall repair done on the vehicle one month ago. The repairs done for campaign number 10v017000 did not repair the vehicle. While traveling 35 mph the caller tried to come to a stop and the vehicle accelerated. The caller was able to bring the vehicle to a stop by placing the vehicle in neutral. The vehicle is currently at the dealer being inspected again. The contact did not have the vin number at the time of the complaint.the failure mileage and current mileage was 14300.rl

Toyota 2009 rav 4. Coming off freeway to stop light. I coasted then applied the brakes and the car engine started to rev up. As i applied the brake pedal harder the engine keep revving up. By pushing on the brake with all my force the car came to a stop. It was up to 7000 rpm's. I shoved the shift lever into park and the auto went immediately went back to normal rpm's. My foot was not on the gas pedal. I took the car to toyota and did a claim form with national toyota. The dealer could find no problem with the car. Both the dealer and national toyota said there is nothing else they could or would do. The car is not safe to drive and i have not picked it up from the dealer.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav 4. While driving approximately 6 mph, the contact stated that the vehicle suddenly accelerated to 20 mph without warning. The contact had to use both feet to apply pressure to the brakes in order to keep the vehicle from accelerating. The dealer informed the contact that it was impossible and the incident did not occur. The dealer offered no further assistance. The contact did not inform the manufacturer and since the dealer was unable to duplicate a failure, no repairs were performed. The current mileage was 21,000 and the failure mileage was 20,735.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While pulling into a parking space with the brake pedal depressed, the engine revved and caused the vehicle to accelerate. The vehicle lunged forward and landed into a nearby pool. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed and taken to the c&c dodge toyota dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealership stated that they were instructed by the manufacturer not to tend to the vehicle involving unintentional acceleration. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided case number: 1707311582. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000.

A 2009 toyota rav 4 v6 limited. While driving at low speeds approximately 5 to 10 mph, vehicle suddenly accelerated upon braking without warning.this is very scarry since braking distance can not be determined and has caused near accidents. This has happend about 6 to 8 times and was reported to the dealer on 3 occasions near 5,000 and 25,000 and 27,000 miles.applying pressure to the brakes in order to keep the vehicle from accelerating increased the acceleration. The toyota service dealer reviewed and test drove the rav 4 twice.on the last occasion, the vehicle was kept over night for a toyotaregional manager to investigate at 27,000 miles.the regional manager, after our discussion, indicated he would file a report with toyota.neither the dealer service manager nor the toyota regional manager were able to duplicate the acceleration when the brakes were applied.no repairs were performed, however the last acceleration upon applying brakes did occur after the pedal recall.the regional manager reviewed the pedal recall installation and assured me it was performed correctly.both the dealer service manager and the toyota regional manager informed me the acceleration could be user error since the brake is close to the accelerator. The brake and accelerator could be both depressed at the same time.they were both able to do this, hit the brake and the accelerator with one foot when braking.the dealer service manager the showed me how other models have the brake and accelerator further apart.when asked about a brake over ride, the regional manager stated the computer update on a 2009 rav4 v6 could not be adapted to over ride acceleration when braking.the dealer service manager and toyota regional manager offered no further assistance.

Gas pedal stuck on my 2009 rav4 and i hit the rear of the car in front of me at a 4 way stop. I was able to engage the brakes but the distance/time was too short for the brakes to over come the acceleration. In front of the car that i hit was a pedestrian crossing--if it were not for the car in front of me i would have struck pedestrians. Before the accident i did not detect any evidence of a problem. The pedal failure was a one time incident. After the accident (before the recall) it never occurred to me that there was a mechanical problem--i assumed somehow that i had my foot on both accelerator and brake. However after spending much time in my driveway i could not replicate having my foot push both the gas pedal and brake pedal. My wife and i agreed that she would drive the rav4--and i would not.soon after my accident the 2009 rav 4 recall for sticking gas pedal was announced. I am absolutely sure that the sticking gas pedal caused the accident.since the date of the recall (january 21) we parked the car in our driveway. We will not drive our rav4i contacted my dealer (lombard toyota, lombard il)--they replied that as a dealer they could only recommend that i call toyota's customer experience numberafter a couple days i was able to get through to the "toyota experience" line--over the next several days i was passed up the line until i was able to speak to a case manager. On january 27the a toyota field technician came to my house and inspected my car. Since then i have heard nothing from toyota.

While driving on interstate with cruise control set @ 70mph. And entering a reduced speed area, i disable cruise by tapping brakes. After traveling a few miles the car would accelerate at a fast rate on its own.i would then either tap the brakes again or turn off the cruise to stop the acceleration.this has happened at least 6 to 8 separate occasions.last use of cruise was in november.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The driver states she was driving 25mph was driving in traffic and the vehicle accelerated on its own and crashed into the vehicle in front of her. The contact states they took the vehicle to the dealer and they said that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The failure mileage was 9,800. The current mileage is 9,820.

2009 rav4 toyota was traveling about 30-35 mph when the vehicle rapidly accelerated. The engine rpms increased significantly and a loud sound was heard from the engine revving. The brake pedal was immediately depressed firmly and the vehicle was able to slow down. The vehicle was stopped and the engine shut down. After turning the car back on there were no further incidences. The vehicle was taken to the dealership of purchase. An inspection was done by toyota representatives and the inspection came back with no unusual report. The vehicle that i purchased in new condition is unsafe and i am stuck with a car that i do not feel comfortable driving. It has been parked since january and is no longer being used.

I purchased my 2009 rav4 on june 19, 2009.with only a few hundred miles (less than 1000) on the vehicle, i traveled to annapolis, md on july 20, 2009.after driving on the expressway for most of the around 200 miles, i exited and upn stopping for traffic, i experienced the accelerator sticking (did not come back up upon deceleration).i luckily was able to stop the car before a collision, using considerable force on the brakes.the accelerator did return to a normal position after 2-3 seconds.i never did experience the problem afterwards and i now have around 5400 miles on the vehicle.i did discuss the problem with the dealer months after this incident and they did install the recall device on the accelerator. I have not noticed any problems since. I am reporting this since my experience with the accelerator seems to be different from others. My accelerator stuck when the vehicle was nearly new and had very little wear.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota rav4. The contact stated that the vehicle engine raced as the rpms increased. The vehicle then accelerated independently. The contact was previously serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 11v113000 (vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was not alerted of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The failure mileage was 62,215. The vehicle was not repaired.

I have a 2009 toyota rav4, and took it in to the dealer for accelerator shim placement as per the recent recall. Since the shim has been placed, i have been experiencing periodic episodes of "jackrabbit" starts from a stopped position. The accelerator is very touchy, it either creates a prolonged moment of hesitation, then jerks forward. There was one episode when the vehicle rapidly accelerated, thankfully there were no vehicles in front of me. I returned to the dealer, but since they could not replicate the concern, they dismissed my issue. I am annoyed that toyota acted as though they have never heard of such a thing.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact was driving approximately 5 mph on wet road conditions; proceeding to a traffic signal. There was an unintended increase in acceleration. The driver applied an aggressive force to the brake pedal. The vehicle failed to slow down and immediately, the gear shifter was placed into the "neutral" position. The vehicle stopped and engine turned off. The vehicle was able to resume normal operation. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection. The throttle body was cleaned. On a separate occasion the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for the identical failure which there were no resolutions. The failure mileage was 2,083. Updated 02/17/10. *ljupdated 02/19/10.

2009 toyota rav 4.consumer writes in regards to accelerator pedal problems.the consumer on march 17, 2014, she took the vehicle to the dealer for a noise in the fan heater. The technicians also addressed a recall for the accelerator pedal. The recall required reprogramming the ecm with smart stop technology. However, on april 17, 2014, while turning a corner at a very low speed, the rpm's raced high as if the accelerator pedal was stuck. When she removed her foot from the accelerator and applied the brake, the rpm's continued to race, and continued, even when the vehicle was put in neutral. When she stopped, she shifted the gear into park and the rpm's were still racing.the accelerating only stopped when she turned the vehicle off. The consumer went back to the dealer. However, they were unable to find anything wrong.toyota engineers concluded and reported, pedal mis-application.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle accelerated suddenly to approximately 25 mph. The contact applied pressure to the brake pedal and was able to control the vehicle and come to a stop. Thevehicle was towed to the dealer. The technicians were unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was contacted and stated the contact could file for arbitration but they could not provide further assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 20,735.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while attempting to engage the brakes, the engine rpm failed to decrease. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who decided to send out an engineer to inspect the vehicle. The engineer was unable to determine what was causing the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 16,000 and the current mileage was 22,000.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While the contact was driving approximately 10 mph in a parking lot, the brake pedal was engaged and the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The engine rpms increased up to 100. The gears also shifted into neutral position. The engine was turned off and within a few minutes it restarted. The vehicle began to function normally. The following day, the vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure after driving the vehicle. The technician was also unable to locate a failure code. A complaint was filed with the manufacturer who advised the contact to submit an arbitration form and possibly the manufacturer would buy back the vehicle. The failure mileage was 8,850. The current mileage was 8,758.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact was driving approximately 50 mph with the cruise control activated. The contact approached a traffic stop and applied the brakes but the vehicle continued to accelerate. The gear was shifted into neutral in order to stop the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. The technician was unable to detect a trouble code. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

1. As i was pulling into a parking place in a parking lot, my 2009 toyota rav4 accelerated rapidly and drove up on the sidewalk.i immediately slammed my foot on the brake and managed to stop the car just before it would have run into the wall ahead of me.before turning into the parking place, i had slowed way down to make the 90 degree turn and i applied only gentle pressure on the accelerator to pull into the parking spot.2. I have had this car since september 2009 and have never had an experience like this before. 3. I have an appointment with my toyota dealer next tuesday, feb 9, to insert a piece of metal to stop the accelerator from sticking.but i'm afraid this may not solve the problem, since this did not seem to be the result of the accelerator sticking; the accelerator was only slightly depressed when the car speeded up by itself.

I was told my 2009 rav4 was not subject to the toyota recall.yet i have experienced involuntary acceleration on two occasions.both times i was slowing down to make a left hand turn, having almost slowed to a stop when the rpm's accelerated to 5,000 - 6,000.the first time i was slowing down from 30 mph to about 10 mph when the car sped forward as i was turning.i almost hit a sign on a median but was able to stop the car by slamming on the brakes.this was in november 2009 over three months after the rav4 was purchased but before i knew about the recall.i brought the vehicle into the kolosso toyota dealership for the fix a few weeks ago. I was not told my car was not part of the recall but was told i was "all set" for the time being but that there may be additional fixes required in the future that were still being evaluated.today, this involuntary acceleration occurred again.i had been traveling on a two lane highway.speed limit was 50 mph.i had slowed down, almost to a stop in preparation to turn left.the car was going less than 10 mph, my foot was on the brake pedal when the rpm's suddenly shot up to 5,000 - 6,000.i pressed down on the brake harder and put the car in neutral to stop it from propelling forward.it took many some time for the engine to stop revving.this nearly caused an accident into oncoming traffic.when i called toyota about this, as i was afraid to continue driving the car, i learned that my car was not part of the recall because i had a denso gas pedal.toyota tried to minimize the incident and indicated i could continue driving it to a dealership about 25 miles away. I refused to do so and had the vehicle towed at my dealer's expense back to my city of residence.

When coming to a stop, the car increases idle to 1500 -2000 and the brakes sometimes become "squishy" and the brake pedal will feel like there is no pressure.the car will stop, but the idle will continue to rev up.i have to ensure i do not release the brake until the car in front of me is a very safe distance away.the dealer could not replicate the problem.this has continuously occurred since the car was new, it now has approximately 17000 miles.this vehicle, per the vin was not included in the recall.

Coming to a red light i applied my brakes to slow the car and the brake felt a little hard and were very slow to react.because i had allowed enough distance to the light i was able after a moment or to feel the car begin to stop.very frightening because it felt like i was not going to be able to stop the car before the reaching the traffic light at the intersection.i reported the incident to my toyota dealer and they thought they needed to reset the computer.after checking it out they could not find any problem.over the next two years this anomaly occurred several times and each time i had them check but no resolve was found.on 8-17-14 the dealership had me complete their survey of these occurrences and performed a series of diagnostics.their conclusion was that my foot may have been hitting both the accelerator and brake simultaneously on those occasions plus they ask me to remove a rubber mat which had been over the car's accessory carpet mat.that rubber mat has remained out of the car ever since.i felt that both of those remedies could not have been the cause as if that were the case these incidents would have happened more frequently.my suspicion is that it is either electrical or mechanicalanomalies that only occur rarely.i believe i have been fortunate to date that when these prior episodes have taken place the conditions were manageable. My primary concern is what if conditions were not so.. I.e. Highway travel atgreater speed, heavier traffic, and wet or icy road conditions...a scenario that begs very serious, if not tragic, results...very frightening circumstances to ponder indeed. This unintended acceleration mystery needs to be more deeply addressed.

When i lift my foot off the gas pedal of my rav4 toyota, there is a noise and grinding that occurs.it has progressively gotten worse, after 3 levels of service dept. Looking at it, the determination was that this is a characteristic of the rav4.no explanation as to what it is, but that the car if safe and to continue driving it.why then, if it is characteristic of a rav4, do they not have an actual explanation as to what is happening when the noise occurs, why did it take 3 months and a special technician to determine this, you would think that with all the rav4s they have sold, that they would be seeing numerous cars doing this.my car was purchased brand new and this little characteristic had never been discussed, where has it been for the 9 months prior?what happens to make it appear, and why can't they fix it, whether they think its dangerous or not? they have informed me that my only recourse at this time, as if i should be my problem at all, is to take it to another dealer, and have them drive it, another dealer who more than likely, since they travel from one toyota dealer to the next, will give me the same result.i am outraged that they are not taking responsibility and dealing with this.it is not okay to sell someone a brand new car, have something go wrong within a year, and have a legal document, which they keep throwing in my face, saying because their very own technician determined that it is a characteristic, i should just have to live with this noise and vibration.my 7 year old is afraid to get in the car.how dare they treat their customers like that?it make noise, it vibrates, we can't give you an actual explanation, we can't fix it, so just go back, get into your brand new car, and deal with it.

This complaint is related to and the same type of complaint as complaint #11297696.it also is a duplicate of complaint # 11297717 which i noticed when i printed it out deleted all but the first ten words of what happened.on 5 january 2020 i was parking the rav 4 in a large parking lot at the green town center in beavercreek, ohio.the parking lot was set up with head-to-head parking.i pulled into the space and backed-up to even the car out between the designated white lones. With my foot on the brake and the gear shift in the lowest gear i was edging forward when the rav 4 suddenly accelerated and hit the honda odyssey van in front of us.i was able t back the car up and since the honda was unoccupied we called the police who filed a report in beavercreek and left a crd on the honda's windshield.the damage to the van was bumper scrapes and the damage to the rav was bumper scrapes and a tear in the bumper.an estimate has not been made on repair costs and toyota has not been contacted.

I am writing to complain about two acceleration problems recently experienced with my 2009 toyota rav4 vehicle.one involved rapid acceleration experiences and the other a sticking accelerator. (12,500 miles)(i previously complained about a sticking accelerator after only 1000 miles andinvolved in the accelerator recall.)on september 21st, i had a rapid acceleration with my 2009 rav4 while my foot was firmly on the brake pedal. My wife was also present and was very frightened by the experience since it occurred when turning a corner near a person holding a pizza sign.i was thankfully able to control the vehicle with firm braking.the sudden burst of acceleration stopped after about a 2 second period of time. Due to this experience, my wife now refuses to drive the vehicle . On september 22nd, i again had a rapid acceleration on two different occasions.in both occasions i was beginning to go straight so i was able to continue after the 2 second burst of speed.on september 23rd, i experienced a sticking accelerator pedal even after the accelerator was repaired through a recall on the vehicle. I was traveling around 45 mph when approaching a stop sign and was able to control the vehicle with steady, firm braking.on september 24th, the vehicle was examined by the dealer. I was met with considerable resistance and defensive comments.the service manager sharply stated to me that there has been no evidence of any acceleration problems with toyota vehicles and all the problems were due to driver's faults. He continued that all the lawsuits will be thrown out of court soon.a worker performed a brief drive of the vehicle and computer examination of the systems.they found nothing to indicate any system was defective.due to the attitude of the service manager and the fact that the vehicle was not repaired, we have traded the vehicle to a different dealer and purchased another vehicle after a considerable financial loss on this vehicle.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While the contact was driving approximately 5 mph, the brakes were engaged to the floor. Suddenly, the vehicle accelerated without warning. The vehicle would not slow down.the gear selector was shifted into the park position, and the vehicle crashed into the proceeding vehicle. There were no personal injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the technician was unable to locate a problem. The front end damages were not repaired. The insurance company was in the process of appraising and inspecting the vehicle at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 15,000.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. The contact was pulling out of the driveway when the vehicle suddenly began to accelerate up to 20 mph. The contact depressed the brake pedal but the vehicle increased its speed before it finally stopped. The vehicle traveled about twenty feet before it was stopped. The vehicle had not been inspected at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 1,000.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While driving approximately 5 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and upon release, the vehicle suddenly accelerated causing a crash. None of the air bags deployed and the contact was injured. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed but had not been inspected when the complaint was filed. The current and failure mileages were approximately 18,000. Updated 06/10/10updated 08/06/10

Sudden acceleration 2009 toyota rav4.pulling out of a hotel parking lot towards stop sign, very low speed, took foot off gas pedal and placed on brake pedal.rpm's increased dramatically.slammed gear to neutral, kept foot hard on brake pedal, shut off engine.situation repeated once following day in similar scenario.both events during first long road trip in car (over 500 miles driving before incident).second incident - foot released gas pedal but resting on gas pedal - could sense gas pedal pulled down like when vehicle accelerating after resume when using cruise control.i never use cruise control.

Although my car was fixed in the toyota recall, i believe the problem still exists. It is better, but not best. When i press on the accelerator sometimes the car jerks forward much faster than you would expect. It used to do this more often and to a greater degree, but still does do it on occasion. I noticed this when i first bought the car, but put it off to pressing down on the accelerator too hard.then i began to think that if that was the case it would happen all the time. I purposely try to go forward gently, but am not able to sometimes.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav 4 .the contact stated that while driving at 5 mph when pulling into a parking space and while having her foot on the brake, the vehicle accelerated on its own.it went over a parking block and a curb and then hit a building wall. The vehicle was towed to a body shop, then it was picked up by her insurance company.the whole front end and the passenger side door were damaged due to the crash.there were minor injuries, the contact was transported to the hospital. There was apolice report filed. The contact also stated that this has only occurred once. The dealer was contacted and they stated that they will investigate the failure and let her know the outcome of this investigation.there have been no repairs done to the vehicle to date.the failure and current mileage was 6615.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav 4. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The contact removed the floor mat which disengaged the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 53,000.

On8-14-2011 my husband was driving our rav4. We had just left a residential house and had been driving through the neighborhood at approximately 30 mph (maximum). As we approached the red stoplight at the neighborhood exit, he took his foot off the accelerator to gradually come to a stop. The vehicle was then moving at less than 5 miles per hour.when he pushed his foot more firmly on the brake to come to a complete stop, the engine starting racing wildly.he then put the vehicle in neutral and turned off the engine.when he restarted the car everything worked fine.a visual inspection verified that the floor mat was nowhere near the gas pedal and the gas pedal moved perfectly (not stuck).considering the circumstances, i cannot believe that either the floor mat or a stuck gas pedal caused this acceleration.fortunately (at least this time), the warnings from toyota and discussions on the internet had mentally prepared us to safely respond in the event that this type of situation occurred, but if an uninformed driver had been driving the car, it is very likely that they would have slammed into the car in front of them.

This complaint is the same type of problem identified in complaint #11297696.on 5 jan 2020 i was parking the rav 4 in a lot at the greene town center in beavercreek ohio. I pulled into a space which was head -to-head parking.i then backed up to straighten the car out between the designated white lined parking space. With my foot on the brake and the gear shift in one/low the car was edging forward when it all of a sudden accelerated and hit the front bumper of the car in front of it.since that car was unoccupied a police call was made in an attempt to find the driver which was unsuccessful.a police report was filed.the damage to the honda odyssey (the car in front) was scrapes on the bumper.the responding officer left his card on the windshield of the honda.the damage to the rav 4 consists of a tear in the front bumper and some scrapes and repair costs have not been estimated.toyota has not been contacted about this latest incident.

The contact owns a 2009 toyota rav4. While pulling into a parking space, the vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own. As a result, the vehicle crashed into a brick wall. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The local dealer was not notified. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 137,000. The vin was invalid.

Our rav4 was apparently not included in the last recalls but i now believe this is incorrect. On 2/27 i rear-ended a truck going about 30-35 mph. I originally thought i had missed the brake pedal and by the time i realized the car was not stopping i had to slam my brakes and tried to turn to miss the car in front of me. After checking further i'm not sure how i would have even been able to entirely miss the pedal.i was very shaken up and thought i had imagined that the car was accelerating after i had originally braked until i overheard my 8 yr old daughter talking to someone else and saying she 'felt like we were going faster instead of stopping".if not for the urging of friends and family and after researching, i'm not sure i would have even thought it was a toyota problem.luckily i was the only person to be injured with a sprained foot, but if this can help to save someone else from a potentially fatal crash i would feel that i have done my part.please push toyota to find out the real problem and get it fixed.i'm not sure how i am even going to be able to drive that truck again without feeling confident that my family and i are safe.

Get by.

I have ha the car back to the dealer for this brake problem and they said this is normal ,what the problem is the brake pedal is softand when braking you foot can hit the gas pedal this also the pedal will go down when you are holding at a stop, also its not leaking brake fluid as the car was service at the dealer.

I purchased a new rav4 2009 toyota andexperienced unintended runaway acceleration on three separate occasions. It was first brought to a toyota dealer in sandy springs, atlanta and was told that the rotors were warped. They were replaced but soon after that repair, it accelerated out of control again and was brought to delray toyota where i purchased the car. They kept it for 5 days and called to tell me there was "nothing wrong" and unless they experienced the problem during a test drive there was nothing they could do.i had someone drive the car back to my home and it is presently sitting in my garage. Soon after the third incident i was called by the dealer and was told to bring it in. The car was towed to delray toyota and they told me that the recall did not pertain to my car because the vin # didn't qualify for replacement of the gas pedal which was recalled on other rav 4's . It was again returned with no repair of this serious safety issue and is presently unusable because i fear that this unintended acceleration problem could cause a serious accident effecting me and others. I was at a stop sign and turning right with my grandson in the backseat, i heard a loud noise no other car around me at the time pulled over and looked all around the car and in the back to see if something fell over nothing was in the back.started driving again and heard wind noise pulled over again and looked all under ravand tires got ready to get in side looked up on the top and the sunroof had a hole in it and shattered. Nothing hit it just shattered.if had had the inside open glass would have been all inside the vehicle. Toyota said not in warranty and the extended warranty purchased did not cover either, had to file insurance claim.was never advised when purchased that the sunroof could just explode and shatter for no reason. Now have a vehicle that i will not ever open the inside door for the sunroof again if would shatter while open would get glass all over everyone. Thank goodness was only going about 20 miles hour and the inside sunroof door closed when happened.if had been going 65 miles hour and had the sunroof inside door open could have caused wreck.

On may 14, 2014 in the afternoon i picked up my vehicle and drove to home depot here on st. Thomas, us virgin islands. Upon getting ready to leave home depot, i observed the tire light on. I said maybe the tire has a leak. I then drove to barbel plaza and observed that the tire was airing down. I then took my vehicle to the tire shop next to silver dollar. The gentleman checked the tire after throwing soap liquid on it and observed no nails or screws stuck in the tire.he then took off the right front tire and poured water inside the rim and showed me that there iscrack on the inside rim. He said that someone could've dropped tbe tire on the ground or something fell on it. I called the nhtsa website and was advised to call the toyota manufacturer. I called toyota and was advised to notify my local toyota so they can assist me. I brought it to the managers attention for toyota and i received no assistance.he is giving me a six for a nine.
