I reported lack of air bag inflating to toyota via email and they never responded....toyota rav was impacted by a volvo from front, and both air bags did not inflate.
Airbags failed to deploy in 45mph (approx) head-on collision.
As vehicle entered intered intersection, front airbag imploded causing driver to lose control and hit a parked truck.both vehicles were damaged and driver's insurancecompany paid the claim, charging the violation against the driver, and raising driver's rates exorbitantly for three years!!due to the force of the impact against the driver by the imploding airbag, the driver was very dazed when the police arrived and unable to adequately explain the cause of the accident.
Head on collision -airbags failed to deploy-fracturing sternum, ribs and injuring right shoulder. Pre-tensioner on seat belt failed also.*nlm

The contact owns a 1999 toyota rav. When the ignition was turned to the off position in the evening, the radio was activated the next morning. Also, the fan in the engine was running and caused the battery to drain. The ignition was turned to the on position, but the vehicle failed to start. While driving at an unknown speed, the engine stalled and the air bag warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle restarted on some occasions, but the failures recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the theft deterrent system failed and needed to be removed. The vehicle was repaired, but the failures recurred and rendered the vehicle inoperable. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 98v278000 (electrical system). The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
Engine fire due to electrical wiring short. Mjs
Complaint received via e-mail.while my son was driving the car caught on fire under the hood for no apparent reason. I contacted toyota corporation regarding this issue, and they had me take the car to a local dealer. So i took it to midtown toyota, where i purchased the vehicle in august of 1999. I spoke with a jim christensen ,773-622-6300 x 4911.he is in the service department. After a week i was told that because my car was 6 years old and had 64,000 miles on it that it was determined that this was not a manufacturer's defect. But they could not explain to me what caused the fire, and told me that they were not responsible for the repairs. The car was purchased brand new, and does not have any after market installations of any kind. I have photos of the damage that can mailed upon request. Damage was caused tofront right side, head lights, wiring burned and washer reservoir. The back tail lights and interior lights don't work any more. Also a fan in the engineer keeps running which causes my battery to run down. My car was in prefect running condition up until this happened. The person i spoke with @ toyota regarding this incident is troy h. Higa, 310-468-5638. I have tried several times to go about troy, but was told that there was no one else i could speak to regarding this problem. I would like this investigated.

The gas tank was punctured from a small rock coming off the front tire while on a paved street.the bottom of the tank is shielded but the front side is exposed on this sport utility vehicle.
The gas tank in the consumer's rav 4 was installed with a hole in it.the consumer stated the hole was hidden by the chassis at the time of installation. The hole caused fuel to leak out of the tank.
1999 toyota rav4 -- low fuel indicator light came on when indicator needle was just below 1/2 a tank. Consumer had toyota extra care.dealer said the problem was a fuel sender bracket, part #77017-42020, and was not covered under the extra care.
1999 toyota rav being driven by my 18 y/o daughter.she complained that the car would rev and then jolt when it would finally shift into gear.we brought it to a aamco dealer to have diagnostics done. They said it was the computer that needed to be replaced. Since we didn't have the money at the time we decided she should drive it home and park it.it died on the way home while she was on the freeway.it just wouldn't shift into gear and slowed down to a stop in the middle of parleys canyon (i-80) in utah. Not the best situation for a young girl to be in!shame on toyota for not advising their customers of this problem and advising us on how to prevent a whole transmission replacement!
While starting vehicle forfirst timeand when shifting vehicle into drive it would travel in reverse. Please provide further information.
- while driving a toyota rav 4 with 80000 miles on the odometer the transmission popped out of fourth gear and would not engage . She took the vehicle to the dealer, and while they were repairing the gear shift, they also determined that fifth gear needed to be repaired.at 12,000 miles the vehicle experienced the same failure while in 5th gear.the contact did not want the same technician to repairthe vehicle because shewas concernedthat the vehicle will not be repaired correctly. Updated 03/19/07. 8jb
Without warning, car pops into neutral from fifth gear. This inadvertent action is startling, and, in my opinion, dangerous. I did not lose control of car, but only because i was alert at the time.
Head on collision -airbags failed to deploy-fracturing sternum, ribs and injuring right shoulder. Pre-tensioner on seat belt failed also.*nlm
While driving, seatbelt shoulder harness strap on passengers side does not tighten upon locking the latch.
Both of the front seat belt connections have stopped latching into and locking the seat belt.i had the drivers side replaced about a year ago, it was still under warrenty.now the passenger side is not working.is there a problem with the connections if so why and what is needed to be done.
The owners manual shows that a seat tether anchor can be installed. However, the dealer was unable to install one and toyota customer service told me that the manual was a misprint and the anchor is only available starting in 2000.
The upper portion of the head rest juts forward, creating a depression between the drivers head and shoulders.consumer is concerned that in an accident the force of impact of the airbag will push the drivers neck into this depression, possibly causing serious neck or spinal injury.nlm

The contact owns a 1999 toyota rav 4. The contact was notified by an independent mechanic that the front cradle was completely rusted and the only thing keeping it from fracturing was the steering linkage. The vehicle was not able to be repaired. The manufacturer was not aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 220,000.
We took the rav4 into the mechanic for a brake job & he called us to say it wasn't road worthy because the k-frame was almost entirely rusted through and we shouldn't put our children in it. He said we shouldn't even drive it off his lot that it could hit a pothole and break in two. We came & took pictures of all the rust. He said the k-frame would need to be replaced along with the rocker arms. We came home & researched to find this is a common problem with these vehicles. I don't understand why a company like toyota wouldn't take responsibility for a defect like this. It's clearly a design flaw. Imagine the catastrophic damage and injury that would occur if i had my children in this vehicle driving 65mph down the highway (that i have to take everyday to get anywhere) and the frame on this vehicle breaking! i hate to think what would happen to me or my children. All because toyota didn't make sure to make a functional part of the support structure of their vehicles.
There is rust in the front cross member passenger side. There is a big hole because of rust. It is not safe to drive it.

While changing the converter on my 1999 rav4, we discovered holes and extreme rusting on the front cross member.if this cross member breaks the whole suspension could drop out fo the car and cause serious injury.it is no secret that toyota has many problems with frame rot on other vehicles occuring on similar yeared models.the problem has not been fixed and after a little investigating myself, i have discovered a dozen other rav4 owners with the same problem.i contacted toyota corp. And was told my case was the only of its kind by them.after talking to dealers in my area i found that this problem is occuring and being seen by toyota dealers as well.*ln

Toyota 1999 rav4when releasing gas pedal to slow down, pedal sticks and cannot be pushed down to feed gas without stomping on pedal 3 or 4 times. It does not stick all times. Usually when temperature is 30 degrees or lower. Have been stuck in middle of highway trying to make a turn.vehicle is not on the recall list.
Ntermittent problem with cruise control malfunctioning. Whenever cruise control isengaged it causes rpm to go down rapidly for a second and the overdrive to kick out. Dealer notified, and problem reoccurring.
When usingcruise control it would not disengage when touching the brakes lightly. Dealer was notified about the problem. Problem has been corrected.
Vehicle will intermittently rev while coming to a stop, forcingdriver to apply full pressure tobrake pedal in order to stopvehicle.dealership has examinedvehicle, but could not duplicatecause.consumer states he has to shift to park to stop the vehicle from surging, the tachometer shoots up and engine roars.
Engine on four occasions revs up when slowing to a stop at 5 mph. Have to shift car into park because of the surge of the engine. My foot is on the brake with all my strength, and not on the accelerator. When i reported this in late may, toyota dealer could find nothing wrong with car. Happened again yesterday and i took car in again today for dealer to check. Waiting now to hear from dealer.
The contact owns a 1999 toyota rav4.while entering a parking space, the vehicle accelerated without intention into some bushes. After the minor crash she was able to resume normal vehicle operation.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection.the vehicle was not repaired because the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle has not been repaired for the malfunction.the failure mileage was unknown.the current mileage was 109,000.the vin was unavailable.
Today i was backing out of a parking space and my engine surged. I was able to stop the car by braking as hard as possible, and even then it was difficult to stop. This is the first time it has surged while backing up. On numerous occasions over the years the engine has surged when the car is slowing down at a stoplight or stop sign, and usually when i'm going under 10 miles an hour. Very scary!there is no problem with my floor mat, which is fastened securely well below the brake and gas pedals.also, i've never been disoriented and unable to tell where my foot is. I don't drink or smoke, and have a good safety record with state farm for over 40 years.i've reported this surging problem numerous times to toyota and they can't see anything wrong when they test drive. That's because the surging problem occurs irregularly, about once in every 50 times i brake. At various times i've asked other drivers of rav 4 cars if they've had this problem, and several have said yes. Too bad i never took down their names. I've also reported this before to the nhtsa, and nothing came of it. I have faith that one day the problem will be acknowledged. I'm a retired federal official, so i have to think that writing this is not a waste of time.
S10 appropriate handling re toyota braking problem fm owner of a 1999 toyota rav4.the consumer stated she was stopped at a red light, with her foot on the brake, when suddenly the engine revved and the vehicle lunged forward. The consumer stats she put all her weight on the brake, but it only stopped after she turned the engine off. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, but they were unable to find a problem. The second incident happened within a months time. The consumer stated she was slowing down because she was approaching a stop light, as she was braking the vehicle accelerated. She was able to slam the gear into neutral, since it was still moving and it stopped the acceleration.
The contact owns a 1999 toyota rav4. The contact stated that while sitting at a stop with the brakes applied, the vehicle erroneously accelerated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred several times. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 107,579.
The poorly designed cruise control does not turn off when the driver brakes gently to slow down gradually. Instead of slowing gradually the cruise control resumes and the vehicle surges froward increasing the potential for accidents.nlm
As i've said in previous correspondence to your office, and to toyota, all unanswered, my 1999 rav 4 has often surged while my foot is on the brake, especially when i slow down on an incline (the engine races) and i can barely brake it to a full stop. I know the problem is electronic, but the toyota dealer in berkeley, ca where i bought it stone-walls, and refuses to believe it unless their mechanic takes it out for a run. Of course, it never happens then, because it only happens to me about once in a hundred times.
I submit that the most recent recall (jan. 2010) for sticking gas pedals extends to older year make/models of toyota vehicles.my 1999 toyota rav 4's gas pedal has been sticking now for about 3 years, mostly in the winter.i press it and it gets stuck and i have to push my foot down harder on it to accelerate.however, the pedal does spring back okay, at least at this point.i've had it lubed recently and that didn't help at all.
I have a 1999 rav4. Yesterday i'm driving home from work. I heard a loud noise, i thought a rock hit my car. I stopped at the store and i go to get my keys out of ignition and the cruise control switch is broke. The back of the switch was just hanging. That was the laud noise i heard. The back popped off. Can you tell me if there is a recall for this? thank you
Cruise control arm fell off the vehicle when t brakes were applied. Vehicle proceeded, resulting in a collision. Dealer isnpected the vehicle prior to the incident. Manufacture has been notified.
