Takata recall 6/28/2016. This can potentially kill vehicle passengers if not addressed
Purchased a new 2011 toyota prius from rahal toyota, [xxx] on 07/02/2011.car was manufactured in 03/2011.on 07/17/2011 a car made an illegal left turn directly in front of us and the front of the prius struck the passenger side of the other car at approx. 45 mph.the prius airbags did not deploy and the engine/ hybrid system continued to run.emergency personnel reported that they had just taken a class on hybrid cars and said that the airbags should have deployed and the computer should have shut the car down as soon as the impact occurred.damage to the other car was very severe.damage to the prius seems to be focused on the right front, but involves the entire front. The car was traveling at about 40mph when we t boned another car that entered our lane illegally.my wife applied the brakes and we skidded for about 10 yards before hitting the other car. Neither the seat belt restraining system nor the air bag system operated.

Safety recall nhtsa # 16v487l has been out since june 28th and the recall notice from toyota (safety recall g0u) mentions the installation of retention brackets.now 5 months have passed and there is still no installation going on to avoid this perosinal injury safety hazard. Even though no injuries/deaths have been reported so far, this causes a potential health hazard when the curtain shield airbags deploy. How can it be, that the nhtsa lets this slip for so long? do we really need to wait until somebody gets injued or dies from this known safety issue?

Horn does not work when wheels are straight.horn works when wheels are turned completely left only. I believe it is the spiral cable assembly. Toyota wants $1,093.00 to repair this problem. Other toyota vehicles have placed a recall on this issue. This issue should be recalled on this vehicle. Have researched this safety problem on other prius vehicles and many others have had the same horn problems. The car was parked in a parking lot at 6:45 am.when i returned to the car at 3:45 pm, i found that the drivers side curtain airbag had deployed sometime that day. There was no sign of collision or impact.the car was dirty, and the dust had not been disturbed. I took the car to the dealership and was told that it was 227 miles over the warranty for the airbag (at 60,227 miles total). They ran diagnostics and found no error code or reason for the airbag to have deployed.i contacted toyota and have not yet been given any indication of how they will handle the incident, though i was quizzed extensively.the cost to repair the extensive interior damage to the car is $3000.
I am an excellent driver.i purchased this prius in the summer of 2011.we (my wife and young daughter) were proceeding on juanita drive n.e. In kirkland, wa.my wife and i agree that our speed was approximately 30-33 mph and that there were approximately 3+ car lengths between us and the vehicle in front of us.the weather was dry and sunny.suddenly, a vehicle three vehicles ahead of us stopped to make a left turn, and the two vehicles behind it were able to stop.i immediately applied my brakes to the floor as soon as i observed the stopped vehicle ahead.i felt no response - no gripping of the brakes or gripping of the wheels to the road, no squealing, no skidding, no sense of the brakes slowing the vehicle in the three seconds i applied them.due to vehicles in the opposing lane, a narrow road and no shoulder (a ditch with telephone poles on the right), i was forced to design the least harmful impact - my front right corner to the rear left corner of the vehicle in front.the impact tore open the right front of the vehicle, shattering the windshield next to my wife and causing her legs to fly up and strike the dashboard, injuring her legs in several places.her airbag did not deploy.my 7-year-old was in her car seat in the back seat.the larger split back was behind her.the backbecame unhinged at impact and flipped forward, forcing my daughter's upper body forward.she sustained minor facial injuries.while it is possible that the airbag non-deployment was appropriate (i am not certain of this), there is no question that the braking was soft, squishy, non-existent, and the back seat should not have become unhinged.
Got hit on the front left side of veh. Not at fault and i believe the other party might have provided false papers. But the reason for the complaint is my airbags didnt deploy??? front bumper cover bumper and radi. Had damages. In my nonenexpert opinion enough to cause it to eeploy
I received a safety recall notice (interim notice) regarding defective air bags involving defective welds on air bag infiltrators. I telephoned the dealer to schedule a repair. The dealer said it could be many months before toyota comes up with a fix for this defect. They refused to replace the airbag or give me a rental vehicle. I do not think my family and i should have to drive a vehicle with a known defect that could serious injury or death for many months until toyota comes up with a "fix". There is a "fix". Toyota could simply replace the defective air bag with an air bag that is not defective. I request that toyota be compelled to replace this defective air bag or provide me with a replacement, safe vehicle until the defect is remedied. Thank you
On friday, jan. 16, 2014 my husband made a right had turn from a stop sign onto a road in toledo, oh. An oncoming vehicle did not see him and turned into the front drives side smashing the door into my husband. His head went through the window and the side air bags did not deploy. Our frame was smashed, door smashed, front tire bent in, dashboard was bowed and broken, front, small side, and main drivers side windows broken. The car was found to be a total lose, my husband had to seek medical attention, but my main questions is why did the side air bag not deploy 02/05/15*lj updated 6/9/2015

As the passenger in the car that i owned we were driving and hit the back end of a large pickup truck at approx 26-28 mph. I am 5'10" and as always was not sitting close to the dash. Once i realized what happened my face was bleeding very heavily. What had happened was my face had slammed into the dash (is not close to individuals in prius'. My nose had a significant rip in two locations and was transported by ambulance for plastic surgery. Within 24 hrs my entire face was swollen with a majority of dark bruising from my eyes to my jaws. And multiple stitches in my nose. My seatbelt failed to restrain me back. The airbags didn't deploy. According to the auto shop the airbags didn't deploy bc it had missed the sensor by an inch. The damage to the vehicle was the front center of the vehicle and the entire passenger front end. The hood rolled up and even partially came thru the windshield. The car was totaled from the impact.they stated to them there is no reason the seat belt didn't restrain. However after contacting toyota they did an inspection roughly the middle of january and i received a copy of the data report that showed my mph and proof i was restrained and more information that an average person wouldn't understand. The end of march 2013 i received a response stated the seatbelt worked within the legal guidelines. My thoughts were no way, what would be the purpose to wear the seatbelt if you can still be seriously injured and then thanking god that my daughter wasn't in the front seat and never had been in the car. With that being said i will never buy a toyota again, the amount i saved in gas driving a prius is not worth the loss my daughter would go thru if i were not alive because of a prius (toyota).

The honk / spiral cable is defective - only noticed it in 2015 (brought to the dealer) but never used the honk before that - could have been earlier... It only works when the steering wheel is completely turned to one side.since car has never been involved in accident , this is a manufacture defect and not wear and tear - toyota should cover it - i see they have on other models - i came close to 2 serious accidents when i was unable to warn distracted drivers - the cost is high and this is why i did not not get it fixed in 2015 when i first noticed it (the car was only 4 years old) -
Vin # [xxx] toyota prius 2011, driving on interstate 80 east, at 65 mph, smoke came out of the hood, headlight and wire smelled and burned, car was almost in fire. Shut off car andheadlight and smoke stop. Both headlight are damage due to fire. Kept both head light off, got home and did not use the car for a few months. Car is still under warranty but dealer refuse to repair the problem, telling me i have use an aftermarket bulb. The bulb thatcause the problem was the bulb that came with the car as new. I tried to tape up the burned wire to get the car safety home.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The spiral cable is defective, horn stopped working two weeks ago, cruise control stopped working last week. There has been alot of complaints about this cable. Toyota has had recalls for the tacoma and yaris that use the same part number. The air bag uses the same cable. This is a big safety issue. The cost to replace this cable is $890.00. Someone needs to look into this issue. What is the criteria for a recall, someone dieing.

As the navigation/gps system was being used on a long trip, the backlight suddenly burned out. Upon touch, the screen was extremely hot. (it did not cool down until appx. 1 hour after the backlight had malfunctioned. With the backlight not working, it renders the entire navigation system, bluetooth, back-up camera, audio system/cd player useless and not useable.(entire screen is black.)although the vehicle is only 2 1/2 years old, it is no longer covered under the manufacturer's warranty. The part costs between $2400 and $4500 to replace. Numerous complaints have been recorded on various complaint boards about the same issue on 2010 and 2011 prius cars by consumers.
Security and safety threat in 2011 toyota prius due to power locks failing.actuator in the automatic door locks is defective and fails very early in the auto's life.front passenger door lock failed sept 2013.front driver door lock failed feb 2014.rear driver side door lock failed sept 2014.toyota charges $500 per door to fix, despite the fact that this security and safety risk is obviously caused by the use of cheap, defective parts used to manufacture the 2011 prius.

A check hybrid system alert came on and included lit break, check engine, steering, abs, skid and yellow triangle with an ! mark inside. The car stopped and i could not move it.good thing i was on a side street with light traffic. This happened again after the inverter was replace; and it happened again after the 12 v battery was replaced.
Mice invaded my car. Trapped 6. Found nests in engine area, under trunk, inside hood feltin glove compartment in a water bottle. The smell does not leave after having car detailed and steam cleaned. Toyota should take care of this. Not the consumer problem. My car was driven every day and inside a garage.
We were on freeway when an odd smell was detected.there were several large trucks in the area and we passed off the smell to the trucks.a couple of miles later the passenger said, "the floor is on fire!"at this point, an abundance of smoke appeared above the dashboard on the passenger's side.we exited the freeway, found a fire extinguisher and were able to put out the fire.the local toyota dealer was informed but no action was taken.the insurance company has totaled the vehicle. We are awaiting the settlement check.we have no idea what started the fire.there were no indicatorsi.e. Warning lights/buzzers, etc. Prior to the fire.the area under the dashboard on the passenger's side is a charred mass.therein a large hole at the top of the dash near where the speaker for that side is housed.
After heavy rains, water gets into the spare tire storage well, causing a short in the tpms monitor for the spare tire.all tires have appropriate air pressure but the tell-tale shows until the spare tire storage area dries out - several days.this is a new phenomenon but there are no tears or dings in the gasket around the hatchback.not sure where the water gets in.

Re: nhtsa14v053000/hybrid propulsion system...i did not receive a recall notice in the mail. My daughter owns a new prius and she did not receive any notice either. My car engine did not shut off but my daughter's engine has shut off. You should ask toyota to show proof of its recall mailings. I'll bet the farm that they can't.
Brakes completely failed. Loud beeping sound happened, couldn't stop car even in a parking lot. Had to use transmission to slow to a stop. Was in a grocery store parking lot.
The cd player burns the cd image label.when entering 4 cds into the changer the cd in the 4th position burns almost the entire image label.the other cds had the image paper burned on the outer 1/4 in of the label.i reported this to the toyota dealer on may 1, 2016. On may 16,2016 i dove from wilmington ohio to lorain ohio, 3 hours playing 4 cds continuously.this caused the heat in ghe cd player to increase and burn the cds. The traction control, abs light and warning light all came which i believe all to be a safety issue
On two separate occasions in december of 2013, with two different drivers, the brakes on our 2011 model year prius (purchased new in february 2012), failed to engage.the first time occurred when i was driving (with one of my teenagers in the car with me), and the second time occurred when my wife was driving the car alone.in both instance we pressed the brake pedal, but the brakes failed to respond at all.although it is winter, the roads were clear, and the car did not slow down at all when the brakes were pressed / applied. Interestingly, after 30 - 60 seconds, the brake function restored itself.since december the car has been at the shop at the toyota dealership where we purchased the car.the shop has been unable to identify the source of the problem.additionally, the shop indicated they contacted toyota mechanics and service support staff to help identify and fix the problem, but toyota claimed they never heard of such a problem or anything like it.moreover, toyota refuses to make any repairs or change any parts (even though the car is still under warranty). Yet, this past wednesday (february 12, 2014), toyota announced a recall on rav4's and other models for a software problem that causes the anti-brakes to intermittently turn off.this is particularly troubling, given toyota's claim that they never heard of anything like this and did not know what to fix.further, toyota announced a recall on the prius itself, for a software problem that might cause the car to turn off completely while driving.clearly, toyota has a problem with its software in a number of vehicles.at this point, all i have received is corporate double talk, and i urge the nhtsa to pursue this matter as vigorously as possible.
I'm trying to complain about this long time ago,but now i found that out.i can't drive my car long time ago because this problem. I don't my miles to drives and i can't see my gas miles. All my dashboard gone and my windows they can't open at all. I can believe to have a future car.they have so many problems with the electric systems.
The check hybrid system just came on. We have owned the car for less than 1 year. Although it was used, it has 116,000 miles on it. We do not know whether is a california vehicle. We believe it is a battery issue. This would mean that the battery would need to be replaced which would cost 2500 dollars. That is ridiculous to expect when we just bought it 1 year ago!
My headlights keep burning out.toyota is aware of this common problem and it requires a new electrical harness.they issued an extended warranty to fix this, however not everyone got the notice (like me). It expired in nov. 2019.i was quoted $700 to fix this, when it is a known defect in the car manufacturing.i would like this be a recall item, so everyone can get it fixed. When i took my car in to get it fixed they were fully aware of my problem with this make, model, and year. It is unsafe to have the headlight all the sudden burn out, usually when i first turn them on, please help. It happens about every 3 months or less.thank you.
Owner of vehicle driving to work when they observed a red glow in front of them.the owner then observed smoke from the front.the owner pulled off roadway and more smoke developed.the vehicle then caught on fire.the fire consumed the passenger compartment.a fire scene examination was performed and the origin was determined to be in the passenger side dash area where circuit boards and wiring bundles were located.the fire resulted in a total loss of the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that while driving at 55 mph, the vehicle stalled with several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 18v684000 (hybrid propulsion system) and 14v053000 (hybrid propulsion system). The vehicle was repaired under the recall campaigns however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 159,000.*dt
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving various speeds at night, the front driver side headlight became inoperable. On another occasion, the front passenger side headlight also failed without warning. The dealer recommended that both bulbs be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred two years later where both headlights failed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Driving vehicle down highway, tapped brakes but brakes did not work, all the lights on my dash lit up. I lost traction in brakes causing vehicle to lose control.
I was a front passenger in a 2011 toyota prius. We just got in the car. My friend turned it on. I lowered my window and placed my arm in an upright position just over the windows lower molding. My friend went to raise my window because he wanted the a/c on. He used his auto up feature from the drivers side. Before i could remove my arm, the window was already moving up. It started to squeeze my arm in the vertical position. I had my thumb inside the vehicle and my four fingers out side the window from the top. I could not release my hand from either direction. Meanwhile there was a tremendous amount of pressure from the bottom. So bad, i started to yell at my friend to lower the window. He said it wouldn't go down. I started to panic because the pain was very bad. I was about to punch the window but quickly reached across my body using my left hand. I used my passenger side window control and was able to lower the window. This so-called auto-down pinch protection does not activate right away. I firmly believe it activates only past a certain point. According to toyota's website, this feature should apply to all positions but in fact does not. The back of my arm was sore for days and did bruise. We tested my friends car again another day and discovered the exact same thing had happened again. This time we only used our hands to apply pressure at the very bottom instead of only at the top or in the middle. This is a huge concern. Toyota was emailed but i haven't heard back from a representative. In my opinion, i should have received an email back or a phone call at the least. It saddens me because i too am the owner of two toyotas. Where is the priority now?
The honk / spiral cable is defective - only noticed it in 2015 (brought to the dealer) but never used the honk before that - could have been earlier... It only works when the steering wheel is completely turned to one side.since car has never been involved in accident , this is a manufacture defect and not wear and tear - toyota should cover it - i see they have on other models - i came close to 2 serious accidents when i was unable to warn distracted drivers - the cost is high and this is why i did not not get it fixed in 2015 when i first noticed it (the car was only 4 years old) -
Driver side door lock failed and shortly thereafter the front passenger door lock also failed. We have owned a total of five prius vehicles since 2007 and have never experienced this problem before this dual failure. Judging from the number of complaints on this site and info gathered during internet research it appears this is a widespread problem, most likely due to poor quality or defective door lock actuators. A google search (toyota prius "door lock" failure) resulted in a quarter million results.
Dash board keeps beeping, yet i have replaced the key battery 3 times and now dealer says key not detected, yet car runs so the key is detected but the beeping will not stop.took to dealer paid 89.99 for diagnostic per dealer.dealer now says the left harness needs replaced for $1802 plus tax.i feel manufacturer should allow consumers who bought there product be given information about history of faulty electrical wires even when it is not a safety hazard.just turn off the beeping noise if that is the only issue. Mileage 58847...
June 29th 2018 was in the car wash going thorugh when the dash board panelsaidtraction battery low put in parkthe battery indicator showed one bar light on but i couldnt put it in park for i was still going thorgh car wash when it was donewashing put car in drive and it was very slow in driving it took it awhile to come back up in powerjuly 6th took it to local dealer and i think they thought i was nuts they said they never heard of suchof a thing happing like that. Thought matbe it was the new battery they put in my car in march of 20018 so i want this on record that i had it checkedeven called and checked on line if there was a trecall only thing i found wasa 2014 recall on my year but not my vion of the electrical system software. Is it possable that is what happened to my car. Hope you can give me a answer
I was pulled over by the police, (while on a village street) because my headlight bulb was burned out. (again!) i have had 4 headlight bulbs replaced on the 2011 prius and it is only 4 years old! toyota has a technical service bulletin on the wiring harness, that shorts out the bulbs prematurely, but no recall. Please recall the prius for the wiring harness, so i can stop getting pulled over by the police! 09\15 thank you!
Vehicle loses braking function while traveling over potholes, recessed manhole covers, and all other types of rough road surfaces. Braking function is delayed and does not return to previous power/braking strength after traversing the obstacle; this results in the need to depress the brake pedal further to re-engage enough braking function to stop the vehicle safely. Serious concern is that if the vehicle is under hard braking at the time of the event will there be enough travel left in the brake pedal to reengage the brakes enough to stop. I have experienced this regularly, one or more times per month, since i purchased the car. Up until now most occurrences have been just a minor annoyance. I researched the phenomenon on the web and many just write it off as a nuisance / minor quirk of the vehicle so i accepted that opinion and continued on enjoying the car. That is until may 21, 2013 when under hard braking (30-35mph driving speed then heavy braking to 0mph) the vehicle traveled over a recessed manhole cover and it felt like it fully lost all of its braking power and nearly sent me into the back of the vehicle stopping hard ahead of me. I had to floor the brakes before i felt any braking power return after the bump. This issue will lead to an accident if it has not already. Please keep an eye on it.
The door locks on a good portion of toyota prius fail leaving the both the car and it's occupants unprotected. It is mostly the front door locks. Toyota refuses to check into the problem. They want over $400 per door lock to fix it. I feel that it is both an inconvenience and a safety hazard since they will not open with the remote or the metal key. The only way to unlock is to enter through the back seat of the car and reach forward to the front door.
Well i was driving and suddenly my car battery turned off and check hybrid system came on the dashboard it stopped so i parked it on side and unplug battery wires so it start working again the weird thing is that when i check to see any code but nothing camerecently it was happening and one recall came for hybrid battery after that it was working fine but now this thing happened again and it was dangerous because i was in the middle of highway and car stopped.
I was driving along on the freeway trying to get home and suddenly my prius lost power. I was panicking, good thing i had my brothers with me or else i would have lost it. We didn't know what was going on! we managed to get off the freeway safely, but we were distressed.
While driving at ca freeway speed (65mph) the car goes limp. The accelerator fails to work and even flooring the vehicle makes no difference. At this point the speed of the vehicle decreases and i have to immediately pull to the shoulder. The "check hybrid system" alert shows on the dash and also electric power steering and check engine light. This issue has been going on for the past year and i have taken it to several toyota dealerships with no resolve. I have spent a total of $4500 without toyota of vallejo or the now bankrupt toyota of fairfield solving the issue. This is a life threatening issue and happened several times with children in the vehicle.show in video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca5hjrsnfsg
Wednesday april 30 2014 i went to church, when i came out and got back in my car light was out. They were burning.
A few months ago i had the required software update to adjust the safety feature in the hybrid system in case of a failure. While driving on a side street on 3/1/19 i pressed the gas after being stopped, the car jerked, and the check hybrid system light came on. This was on railroad tracks but the car did drive on the gas engine a short distance to make it over the railroad tracks. I had the car towed to a toyota dealer who stated the inverter was bad, but that toyota would replace it as they extended the warranty.this seems to be an issue that toyota is ignoring. I also own a 2014 toyota prius v which is also prone to this issue. Toyota should address this issue beyond a mere software update.
Dim headlight problem while driving at night, unable to see road clearly with low beam headlights on at night, have to use high beam headlights to see road. This is a huge safety issue for me
As i was driving down the freeway my car filled with smoke and i realized my engine had caught fire, i was able to get out, the whole front of my car was engulfed in flames in no time
The headlights keep burning out, i have replaced the drivers side 3 times in 12 months and the passenger side twice. I only use sylvania brand, but have switched to different brightness to see if it has any impact, it has a slight impact but not much. The headlights are not on when not needed.
I took my car in for a few recalls a few months ago for the flashing repair and now my inverter/converter needs to be replaced. I felt like if i took it in for the repairs like my car would suddenly get worse due to the so called repairs to manage the defects but my car still ended up stalling and needing more repairs. I feel this is not right and even saw there was a current lawsuit due to the overheating complication.
The instrument display is to dim to read in bright sunlight, especially when driving directly toward the afternoon sun on a clear day.my wife, who viewed the display as a front-seat passenger, agrees with me.to see how fast i was going, i had to take my eyes off the road and allow my eyes to adjust to the darkened display for several seconds.as a result, i was unable to maintain a steady speed on the hilly terrain.despite my best efforts, my speed varied erratically between 70 and 80, more or less, on an interstate with a speed limit was 75.despite my general misgivings about cruise control, i finally had to resort to itto steady my speed. The incident above was my worst experience, but viewing the display in bright sunlight has been an ongoing problem since the vehicle was new.moreover, this was also a problem with a 2005 prius which we previously owned. This is a genuine safety hazard!the two vehicles mentioned above, at least, and possibly other toyota vehicles, need to be retrofitted with a display that can be readily seen in bright sunlight, but which can be adequately dimmed for night driving.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that the vehicle's horn lost functionality. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving 40 mph, the vehicle lost power. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The failure recurred twice. The dealer updated the software. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer a second time where the technician stated that they dif not have the correct code for the software. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
While driving at a slow speed, the traction control, brake and abs failure lights came on. When i attempted to stop the vehicle, the brake pedal went to the floor without actuating the abs system. I was unable to stop the vehicle using the service brakes. Since i was traveling at a low speed, i was able to slow down and come to a full stop using the parking brake. Now the vehicle is parked and undriveable. I contacted my local toyota dealer requesting service and was told that they did not have a brake master cylinder or hydraulic brake booster in stock. I checked a second dealer and they told me that you can only get the two units together and that they were on national back order with no eta. Since purchase, i have experienced the issue that many people are reporting where the brakes release over rough road surfaces and the vehicle feels as if its accelerating. If you release and reapply the brakes it would stop. Like others, i dismissed this as a peculiar dynamic of the vehicle, however i am now convinced that there is a serious design flaw in this braking system which requires a deeper investigation. I have been in the auto industry for over 30 years and i can attest that it is not normal to have a total loss of your braking system like this, especially in a well maintained vehicle that is relatively new and have low mileage. This vehicle is now parked and available for your inspection if needed.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact was driving uphill at 5 mph and in three inches of snow when the vehicle stalled with the illumination of the sds warning light. The dealer was notified of the failure who stated that the warning light was illuminated in forward mode only to demonstrate in what mode the vehicle was operating.the manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The contact no longer owned the vehicle. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was 12,000.

Brake light, antilock light, vehicle stability light, and yellow trains came on. Having problem with braking. Does not not seem to brake as good. It is very dangerous when driving.
My toyota prius warning lights brake, abs and traction control came on. I check with the dealer and it said my accumulator was leaking. This part alone is $2600 plus $500 in labor. My cat has 41,900 miles on it. This part is an obvious problem because the 09-10 models had a recall for this exact problem. Amazing that the same part excise in newer models but no recall. Especially because it's the most expensive part other then the hybrid battery. I was driving my car when ththe lights came on and my brakes released when depressed and i almost hit the car waiting at a stop light. My kids drive this car often because i thought it was safe and inexpensive for gas. Perfect for a kid with not a lot of income. But, now they can't because of the risk and the pricey repair. If you look at forums this is a worldwide common problem and toyota needs to fix it. Not just a recall for two years of the vehicle. If i had the money, i would take them to court. I'm just a little man thou. This is a major safety issue that toyota has obviously gotten away with. If you do your research online, they're is enough evidence to show that they are not fixing their mistake. I would like a call from someone to make sure that others don't put their kids in the vehicles with these accumulators pressurizing their brakes. Someone will lose their life if it's left ignored. Please feel free to contact me at 808-721-718. I will also call toyota corporation but that will probably get me no where. I'm a little guy against a big corporation.
The car starts as normal and drives normally but once you start to come to a stop the car shuts off and will only restart when you depress the gas pedal but shuts down again when you release the gas pedal, normal city streets and highway
Happen twice hit the brakes fairly hard on rough pavement not real rough didn't bounce just felt like i was on ice nothing there just a second or so butfelt like a long time if a car would have been in front of me don't know if i could have stopped in time.
Brake accentuator failed - no warning and traction control/brake light/abs warning lights all illuminated.hard breaking test @25 mph confirms abs not working (i.e. Tires skid) and breaking distance adversely impacted for normal braking. Hybrid system charging from braking is diminished.
My 2011 prius very recently has started making audibly noise while pressing the brake pedal, whether in motion or stopped. This noise contains continuous whirring, whining and loud clicking noise. These noises where not seen before completely. I spoke to dealer mentioning a tsb pertaining to this particular issue in specific and was told nothing can be done until it fails completely, which is bad, as i have a family of 3 and god forbid if this were to happen while driving on freeway, a serious safety hazard and toyota dealer (rudy luther) response is irresponsible. I am actually worried more now on waiting for the brakes to fail.this loud continuous clicking noises occurs the moment car is turned on and the noises lingers on for short while after the car is turned off, at moments i have to press on the brakes really harder than usual to get the car slowed and is a tremendous panicky situation. I am registering and requesting for this to be looked immediately before any catastrophe.

Traction control, abs and brake lights came on today and brake pressure dropped severely while driving on the highway. Not safe to drive.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle failed to drive in a straight line and drifted to the left and right. The contact had to constantly adjust the steering wheel. The dealer was unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The failure mileage was 10. Updated 11/20/14the consumer stated the vehicle was overly sensitive to heavy wind. The consumer owns another prius with the same failure. Updated 10/5/2015
Driving vehicle down highway, tapped brakes but brakes did not work, all the lights on my dash lit up. I lost traction in brakes causing vehicle to lose control.
Got in car one morning and all the brake / traction control system related lights are on.turned car off, waited 10 minutes restarted car and lights are still on. Tested brake function in yard, reduced but still able to get car stopped.took it to shop and read codes, came back as the actuator which is already recalled on previous year model pruis', obviously they did not fix the issue on the early gen 3 models (2010 & 2011).i have found multiple other people with gen-3's that have had the same issue os these should be included in the gen-2 recall because they are having the same issue.with it being a dealer only part at $4500-$5000 (parts and labor) to fix on a car that's only worth about $10,000 i wonder if it's really worth fixing.at this point the car is parked because with the diminished braking performance i don't feel safe driving it.
The traction control, abs light and warning light all came which i believe all to be a safety issue
The car stop working all the dash lights stop working ,the brakes start getting harder and the don't stop at all and beeping without stop that noise and the hibryd system stop working after i living for some recalls repairs and the want me to fix the car to pay and i know is not my fault everything is because is this car is all electronic system.never on my live i have this problem with my other cars.only with this one and now they one me to pay for something the company makes wrong.this is not fair at all.before i was recomended this car but right now people ask me and i have to talk negative situation about it.
Upon start up in the cold the engine shakes violently for 15 seconds.
My car had the hybrid system software update recall done and it still stall while driving , even at highway speed
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While exiting highway traffic, the engine stalled and all the instrument panel lighting illuminated. The contact was able to coast the vehicle to a safe area. The vehicle was towed to hendrick toyota concord (7670 bruton smith boulevard, concord, north carolina 28026, 704-467-8287) where it was diagnosed that the computer inverter failed. The inverter was replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 93,500.
On jan. 18th, 2014 i was leaving fl to return to nc, when i started up my prius and waited for the gas engine to start, it did not want to start. It sounded like a diesel engine, making a loud knocking noise and the whole car shook. I turned the car off and then restarted it a couple of times, but did not experience the issue again. I drove back to nc and did not experience the issue at all. The car was due for maintenance, so b-4 taking it in, i researched the issue online. I found numerous people that have experienced the same problem on the "priuschat.com" web site, there were also links to youtube vids that showed the same problem. I also found that there is a tsb out for this issue, but it only covers certain vins and the dealers usually require that they can duplicate the problem b-4 they will perform the tsb. The repair is to replace the intake manifold, but this does not appear to be resolving the problem. The problem appears to have started with the 2010 model with the 1.8l motor and has yet to be resolved.
Car stalled pulling into traffic. Took about 15 sec to restart.no diagnostic lights lit up on dash.car lost power last month and engine light went on and engine could not be restarted.had to be towed to dealership.it replaced valve assembly for vacuum and reprogrammed pcm.however, that issue was preceded by a creep of diagnostic lights (course of 1 hour), from check oil to check engine, and then it completely shut down.
The car starts as normal and drives normally but once you start to come to a stop the car shuts off and will only restart when you depress the gas pedal but shuts down again when you release the gas pedal, normal city streets and highway
This car consumes oil...it dose not leak the oil and the dealer says that one quart in 1200 miles is normal...this oil is polluting the atmosphere and is expensive.i fi was told that it would consume this much oil at 100k, i would not have purchased the car.
Hard knocking when turning on engine until i compress and decompress my break.has happened 3 times, only during the cold months
Went in to have the spark plugs and 2 coils(cylinders 1 & 2) started shaking, knocking and smoking at the time i picked it up. Check engine light is on and hasn't gone off.the mechanic i take the vehicle to says it is a problem with this model car, trying to determine this, since he stated it is now my head gasket that needs replacing.
Excessive oil consumption. Recently i notice oil pressure low light lights frequently.it used the oil was changed every time the maintenance light come up. About every 5000 miles. Now the low oil pressure comes almost every 1000 miles.the car only has 89k miles.

Started car after prolonged period of cold soak (parked for one week outside in temperatures around the freezing mark).engine exhibited a loud knock/rattle and had a delayed throttle response as i was pulling out onto the street.had to shut engine down (with vehicle located in street, safety concern) to stop loud knock and re-start engine.rattle/knock had disappeared.toyota dealership when presented with issue and toyota issued tsb (t-sb 0012-10) on this very issue declined to perform necessary work since they were not able to "recreate" the issue.i explained that this only happened once and to replicate they would need to park it in the same conditions for a week.i cannot leave my car with them for this long and therefore this is an unreasonable request.multiple owners have experienced this problem (as a quick search on youtube will confirm) yet toyota is denying to fix this.
Starting from a stop after engine shut-down, the car felt like it was going over rumble strips. This got worse over time until i realized that it was actually an engine mis-fire. The dealer traced the root cause to a leaking cylinder head gasket that is a common failure on high mileage 3rd generation prius cars.$4,000 repair. First car i've ever owned that cylinder head gaskets are routine maintenance items. Clear design issue. If you keep this car long enough, you will be buying a head gasket repair.
At approximately 120,000 miles we started receiving messages from our dealership that the car was starting to use oil even though we have performed all required maintenance and on time.then between 130,000 and 140,000 we starting getting an oil light that would come on during cornering.we were told to keep a gallon of oil with us and fill it between changes and we did.it would use about 1 to 2 quarts between changes.then at 150,000 the engine blew up. It was within the time limits of the warranty but not the mileage so toyota would not help us out on a new motor.after that i researched on line and others are having similar problems.most if not all our miles were highway cruising miles so easy miles.we drove this thing like a baby.we have owned many other vehicles to well over 250,000 so this is not a case of we don't take care of our vehicles.the motor right before it blew was making a loud screeching noise but no lights onthe dash to indicate that anything was wrong.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. On several occasions, the contact had to add four quarts of oil within 10,000 miles of driving. On another occasion, the contact had to add three and a half quarts of oil. The contact stated that the oil pressure indicator failed to operate and warn him that the oil was low. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that they had not received many complaints and that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was 98,000.
My toyota prius loses power randomly after having the recall fix j0v completed updating the software in inverter.vehicle stalled 3 times on freeway, highway and off ramp.dash board lights light up with all warning lights.vehicle loses power....can drive a mile or so with almost no power...then vehicle shuts down.dash panel reads check hybrid system conditions are exactly the same as the ze3 warranty enhancement program describes.however the dtc code is slightly different so dealer and toyota will not fix inverter.the car is dangerous to drive as the symptoms appear randomly, usually after an acceleration of the vehicle puts load on engine. Pls help me
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that she noticed a leak coming from inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the contact was advised that there were spiders in the hvac drainage hose and the spiders had created a nest egg in the hose, which caused the leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they advised her that the failure was not covered under her warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were approximately 20,000. The vin was unavailable.
Prius started consuming oil around the 105,000 mile mark. Two months ago, i took it to the dealer and they had me come back after 1100 miles after my oil change. They said it was consuming oil because the piston rings were leaking. The lady tried to sell me a used engine for 3,000 or 5,000 dollars. I told her that is why i bought toyota because i didn't want to spend money after 100,000 miles. I have looked online and this practically happening to all the 2010-2011 prii. My buddy owns and camry and just had his block/piston rings changed for the same problem. This morning, i am a 100 miles from the need of an oil change, and when apply the breaks i get a yellow light coming on saying "not enough oil pressure". I google this and people are saying it is because my oil is low again. I think toyota is trying to avoid having to recall this.
Request help with 2011 toyota prius oil consumption, quality, safety, & air pollution issues:i bought the car new.just after 100,000 miles i noticed it was using oil between oil changes.it has gotten way worse to now at 145,000 miles it used 3 qts in 2000 miles.it does not warn you that the oil level is low until you are 3.5 qts low & a messages says you have low oil pressure.this is unsafe in that the car could go dry on oil and the engine sieze up.there is a tsb on this for other toyota vehicles, but not yet prius.i believe prius needs to be added to the list & i want toyota to replace my engine or at least the piston rings.so far toyota is not admitting to oil consumption problems with the prius.this is also a possible emissions issue. I contacted toyota's customer experience center in feb 2016 and they set-up case no. 1602170764 to track my complaint.they referred me to alamo toyota in san antonio.i do not believe that toyota is being proactive in addressing this problem.after researching this issue on line, i have found many other toyota prius owners with the same problem.the problem does not show up until you are close to the 80,000-100,000 miles point and so for those folks that drive less, the problem may not show up for another couple of years.i thank you in advance for any help that you can provide to me.i spent over $23,000 for this car and hoped it would give me trouble-free transportation for more than 4 years and 100,000 miles.
Burns--does not leak-- 1 qt.every 1000 mi.85000mi on car
Excessive engine oil consumption - 1qt every 2,000 miles.
On start up in cold weather, <40*, after several days of not being used, the engine rattles like there's a loose engine mount.it lasts several seconds, then stops. After the engine warms up it's fine. This happened several years ago and i had tsb-0204-11 installed at 38,000 miles (12/18/13) and had no problem the problem reoccurred yesterday, 1/3/16, 76,000 mi, and i'll check with my mechanic for codes.
The check engine light is on; the car has stalled and looses powerit needs to have the sticky exhaust gas recirculationvalve taken care of.it also needs psv coverage for brake booster and brake booster pump assembly safety warrantee enhancement
Excessive oil consumption of approximately 1 quart per 1,000 miles as of may 2019. Toyota agreed to do a oil consumption test in july 2017 but determined that 1 quart per 1,200 miles was within normal range. Consumption problem has gotten worse and will probably result in having the engine block replaced with a used one at a cost of approximately $5,000
In motion while accelerating past a slower car.heard and felt a pronounced thump and lost engine power on busy local thoroughfare.moved to a turn lane and stopped.multiple dashboard lights and "check hybrid system" on led display.power off car, and back on twice and got the same error on display.found that car could move on ev power and i got it into a safer location at an adjacent parking lot.had vehicle towed to repair facility. As a driver this was disconcerting as i could not clearly determine if the car was at all driveable.if a driver were to stop immediately in the same situation they would be on the roadway.if i had not pressed on the accelerator pedal after powering on the car again i would not have known i could move the car to a safer location.display should read "hybrid system failure" then "limited ev power available" then "move to safe area if necessary"cause: hybrid inverter failure.repaired by toyota under 2014 eoe and new 10/2018 recall j0a
"takata recall"this is our first toyota purchase and we are extremely let down with the fact that it is losing an excessive amount of oil. This is a safety issue. In the event that the engine may cease if it runs out of oil. We previously have only had american vehicles, and were told that toyota is a much better product.. Well as of this past april, we had this brief light go on. It doesn't stay on very long and only appears when you turn a curve. Then the "oil maintenance due" light appeared. That's odd, because i just had my oil change done 2 months ago! i went to a local oil service station immediately and found out i was down to only one quart of oil in my engine. I've never had this happen before! they looked for a leak and didn't find one. They topped off the oil and i was free to go. Well, the same scenario happened again in july, only 3 months after the last top off. I made an appointment with the dealer to have him look it over. They said it needed a system engine cleaning, there were no leaks, they gave it an oil change, and the spark plugs looked fine.. $300 for this to be done. Then they told me to bring it back in 1900 miles... Well this seemed to work... Until... Now.. In october/november (2-3 mos later) the same issue happened, and now they are telling me i need a new engine that will cost anywhere from $3000 to $5800. I have only had this car going on 5 years. I have never had to replace an engine on any car before.. Where is the toyota quality we were told toyota stands behind???
I've had my prius from 4-14 to the present 2016. Ikeep having issues with the dealership i take it to for repairs. [xxx] in la crescenta ca. After mentioning and describing issues, the staff there says that unless the dash lights up with a message and gives a code, they cant fix it. So in order for them to look into it any further than me telling them dash light is nec. I've told them about the ac noise from the first say i took the car in to get services at 33k. They say they don't hear or see anything. My ac compressor sounds like its going to explode when ac is on. Brakes have been extremely diff. To explain because of terminology. They seem to lose their power when being pressed and abs seems to malfunction?? so they drive it and tell me its nothing i need to worry about and will be fixed when changed. Change brakes and the prob persists. Not only abs but firestone says my hardware has issues as well.i bring it to the attention of the staff and nothing seems to get done about it... My odo. Speedom is/was off +2 mph. My weather seals have been stripped and ripped off the vehicle which now causes water leaks from every crevice.. And the biggest two of all my complaints are 1- hybrid batt. Fan never worked and i wasn't told...hyb batt has never worked properly (drains way too fast when stopped at a light or in traff) along with the heat created by the batt and the engine that fill up the cabin and will have the temp raised upwards of 90+ on a 75 deg day. 2- the ecu's ipm's (or something like that) has not been calib. Or updated. Even received coverage stickers from toy headquarters stating full coverage if a.b.c. (listing of problems or malfunctions) i describe the exact same symptoms to them and get the same response"no code, no fix" helpand psi just checked the vin online 4my veh & it says a diff package w/a bunch of extras that i never got upon purchase???_hmmm?? information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that while attempting to park in a parking space, the vehicle independently accelerated and crashed into a sign post. The contact stated that the brake pedal was depressed during the independent acceleration. There was no injuries sustained. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was repaired by the insurance company. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.
Found out the violent engine shaking and the mystery loss of coolant without any noticeable leaks is due to a leaking head gasket that his common to many owners.car now runs rough and mileage is affected.many other owners reporting the same issue http://priuschat.com/threads/new-service-bulletin-for-engine-knocking-at-startup-t-sb-0012-10.102200/page-40
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 18v684000 (hybrid propulsion system). The contact called westbury toyota at 516-272-4499 (located at 1121 old country rd, westbury, ny 11590) and was informed that the parts were not available. The manufacturer stated that the part was available and referred the contact back to the dealer. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving and needed to be towed. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 116,480. Parts distribution disconnect.
Loud rattle, shaking in motor area. Was found to be a head gasket leak. Using a lot of antifreeze and white smoke out the tail pipe. While idle or in motion and while gas engine is running. Started intermittently at first and very short, eg. For a second or two, then got louder, more often and lasted longer. This car has 128,000 miles. This same issue is happening on my 2010 prius with 250,000 miles. I researched this and it is a common place with gen 3 prius cars. I can no longer drive either one of my prius cars safely.
I was getting on the interstate and all of a sudden i lost power and my dash lite up check hybrid system /abs/ breaks. I can not drive my car because it has no power please help thank you
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. When the vehicle was started, all the warning indicators illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as listed in nhtsa campaign number: 18v684000 (hybrid propulsion system). The vehicle was taken to kearny mesa toyota (4910 kearny mesa rd, san diego, ca, 858-413-9625) where it was diagnosed that the computers failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and provided case number: 1812113112. The failure mileage was 124,000.
I was making a left turn ata very busy los angeles intersection and during needed acceleration to turn, the prius lost power for a full second and then power came back slowly and i barely made it through the intersection, a t bone collision was imminent, and i missed getting hit by inches. All the warning lights on the dash illuminated and i was frazzled.the hybrid battery was 2/3 rds full at the time. There have been other instances where the car lost power for brief moments when the hybrid battery was low and didnt think anything of it at the time. The mpg has remained below 40 and after hybrid failure, around 26. Also, i had a gen 2 prius and the catalytic converter went bad around 150,000. California punishes consumers by not allowing after market cats and forces them to buy oem at an extreme mark up. Without a proper cat, you cant have cal smog approval, no approval, no registration. Total waste of resource when the actual cost of replacement of the cat is around $2k at the dealer. If i lived in az, after market is $475. At that point a car of that age and milage is worth around $2-3k. Battery and cat replacement costs should not eclipse the value of the car. Still doesn't mention the rest of the mechanical and saftey apparatus . If an engine works half time on a hybrid, why does the cat burn out so soooon? the scam is baked into the vehicle and our govt supports it.fix carb!
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. When the vehicle was placed into reverse (when the electric powered fuel motor had not been running), the brakes began to seize when the brake pedal was depressed. There were no warning indicators illuminated. Also, during cold weather, the engine and entire vehicle shook. The contact called precision toyota of tucson (700 w wetmore rd, tucson, az 85705, (520) 795-5565) and notified them of the failures. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 15.
There are 3 issues i am having with this prius. The brakes are the first problem. As others have stated, i too have the same lurching forward when braking over bumby or rough roads. This has been ongoing over the last few years. Second, the suspension is creaking and crunching when making turns at low speeds under 20mph. This happens when the wheels are turned all the way right and all the way left. This crunching noise happens when backing out of the driveway, making u-turns, coming to a stop on an incline, and braking over speed bumps. I've had the dealer look at this for the last year when i come in for service and one tech says they can't figure it out, another tech says he hears it but can't find the root of the problem, the service mgr. Also went on a drive with me and reproduces the noise concern but the techs couldn't find it. Most were suggesting new front suspension components-struts, towers, links, etc. I replaced the two front struts and all of the extra components-the noise concern is still there. I am very upset about this. Third issue is the ice-motor. When stopped at a red light and the engine shuts off, the car lurches forward and makes a creaking sound. It's appears that something is not right. The engine seems like it is loose. The engine also makes rattling sound when cruising lightly at 15-25 mph with the accelerator pressed slightly. The sound is coming from the passenger side, under the dashboard-glove compartment area. This is a rattle sound coming from the engine. I've had this looked at as well and the dealer states they cannot duplicate it. I have recorded all sounds related to these concerns and am taking it back to the dealer this month.
Engine developed an oil leak around 120,000 miles. Dealer ran an oil leak test ($700)and performed something else for $300 dollars. Nothing work. Dealer says the fix is to buy a new short block for $6,700. I will not. I'm adding oil myself to car about once every 10 days
The car suddenly decelerated from 65 miles an hour to about 5 miles per hour while driving on a highway at night with the shoulder blocked due to road construction. This same problem was present in the 2004 prius and was apparently the subject of nhtsa investigation. There was a recall issued on november 30, 2010 for 650,000 units of the 2010 prius. Toyota has not been able to determine the cause of this problem in the earlier models and admits it doesn't know the cause of the problem in the 2011 prius. This defect presents a great danger, especially when driving in heavy traffic at highway speeds.
Upon ice start up at times, there is a loud knocking noise emanating from engine compartment. Goes away after 10 seconds and car drives fine. Has occurred several times. Though there is a tsb issued, dealer would not fix unless issue is replicated despite showing them what my car did on video. Most noticeable after car was run for a very brief time hours before. Also notice the last few weeks, while driving vehicle, upon ice starting up, the engine is rough and the shift to ice is noticeable. Previously it was smooth. No codes have appeared and the car appears to run normal otherwise. I would like the dealer to fix the problem as described in 2 separate tsbs (engine mounts and intake manifold gasket).
Upon starting vehicle, a very loud knocking noise, accompanied by shaking occurred. At this time no failure/warning lights appeared on dashboard. Moved car forward approximately 15 feet, and placed car in park, knocking/shaking did not abate. Turned car off. The next day, the car, upon starting had the same loud knocking/shaking. It was audible from several feet away from the car. On the second time, it was accompanied by a warning light to put the car in park. Vehicle was towed to the dealership.
The air conditioning system in the prius is defective. It is prone to growing mildew and/or mold in the system, which results in toxic air being pumped into the car. I have reported the problem to my local toyota dealerships several times, and they have been unable to fix the problem. There is a large body of information about the mildew problem online which seems to indicate that this is a common problem among prius from 2010 to the present. Since noticing the mildew smell in my car, i have had severe allergy problems. This is a serious safety concern that is adversely affecting my health, and given its prevalence among cars of this make and model, i believe toyota should have to address this problem immediately. The air conditioning system flush does not fix the problem, and in fact may have made it worse.
New 2011 prius ii delivered by jaffarian toyotawithout floor mat securing device installed.floor mat not being secured could cause interference withpedals.
Both headlights won't turn on. However, when i press and hold the lever for bright lights, the lights work on the "brights" setting. Lights don't work when i'm driving.
Since the first set of bulbs have went out in the vehicle at around 48,000 miles i will now be installing the 4th set of bulbs... Original + 3.the bulbs in the prius fail within 24 hours of eachother each time and it is going threw headlights around every 10,000 miles at this time.this is completely unacceptable and dangerous for a commuter vehicle.
Both of my prius low beams went out at the same time, i thought it was unusual as both headlights should not go out simultaneously. It was late at night and i was returning from church. I either had to drive without the low beams which is very dangerous or drive high beams which blinds oncoming traffic. I looked online and read several people had both low beams go out simultaneously. This is obviously a problem and should not be happening as it clearly presents a safety risk at night and puts others at risk because i had to use the high beams.this is an ongoing issue with toyota and they should be held liable for putting the motoring public at risk.dealer inspected vehicle and claimed both low beams burned out simultaneously. I was advised of a service bulletin that expired on october 2019 that addressed this issue but they said it didn't apply and that it had expired. I was charged $250 for two headlights. When it comes to public safety their should be no expiration and they should fix the problem.
The headlights in my 2011 toyota prius have burned out 3 times in the last 6 months, two of the times being at night and i've had to use my high beams so that i can see.when i brought it to my mechanic, i was told that it's a defect with the 2010 and 2011 prius and that the only way to repair the issue is to install an enhancement kit, which cost me over $500.when i called toyota about this problem, i was told that my extended warranty does not cover burned out headlights.i keep trying to tell them that i don't expect them to cover burned out headlights, but that they are burning out because of a defect with the car.they keep brushing me off.i am very upset by the fact that it's a known problem with the car and toyota is not standing by it.
Low beams failing.increasing in frequency.both low beam headlamps will go out at the same time.happening monthly and usually in damp weather.frequency is increasing.safety is a major concern.
Within 2 years of purchasing new 2011 prius vehicle, both hid headlight lamps failed (on different occasions) within about 3 months of each other. No warranty available, at customer expense.
Headlights are weak and require frequent replacementtoyota is willing to fix this safety problem for $400should be recalled and fixed for freemanufactures defect and a major safety problemneed your help
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving at a low speed, the headlamps failed. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
My headlight on the passenger side keeps dying out of nowhere after about three or four months of use (about 6,000 miles of driving). It has been doing this for the past year now and occurs about three of four times a year. It would happen out of nowhere. Today it occurred while driving in the rain during work (i deliver food, needing my car to drive).
Front low beams headlights burn out about every six months
Both head lights stopped working at the same time, only high beam will work, regular beam stopped working and will not come back on.
The headlamps burned out on vehicle start-up for the fifth time in 73,451 miles.the headlamp bulbs last an average of 14,700 miles. I wear latex gloves and am critically careful to never touch the bulbs, but the essence of the problem is that the car clearly has a poorly regulated power supply that stresses the bulbs at start-up. My previous 2006 prius ate hid bulbs, so i intentionally purchased a 2011 modelvariant that used conventional halogen bulbs to escape the constant bulb failure issues with prius. To no avail.constantly burning out headlamps is a continuing toyota safety hazard that nhtsa needs to finally address.
Within 2 years of purchasing new 2011 prius vehicle, hid headlight lamp failed.
Both low beam bulbs not working, but high beams work. Bulbs not bad.happened while driving on highway.
Driving in rain in dark on unlit road.both front headlights went out.nothing would make them come back on - turning lights off and on, turning car off and on.very scary.very close to driving off road into ditch.this must be a recall.toyota as usual will deny the problem so the nhtsa must act.
Headlight bulbs fail frequently, several times per year.i called toyota in january 2020.i was informed they had a brief warranty extension to cover the issue, but that has ended.they've refused to offer any assistance.they claim they notified me of the issue, but they clearly did not; the address they claimed to have sent it to was not my address.this is a safety issue, because the bulbs fail so frequently and are not owner-replaceable.i hope you can help.thank you.
Low beam headlights are burning out within a week of installation. When bulbs are replaced, one of the two bulbs will burn out within a week, yet the other bulb will stay active. Both sides are affected. It randomly chooses which side to burn out.
Wednesday april 30 2014 i went to church, when i came out and got back in my car light was out. They were burning.
The headlights keep burning out one at a time, typically about 1-2 weeks after replace the other side.tried switching to a better brand, same issue.tried switching to led, even they burned out after 2 months.
I own a 2011 toyota prius which i purchased in november of that year from arlington toyota in arlington, va.since that time i have had to replace the headlights three times.as of nov 2015, the car had 29,105 miles on it which indicates i do not put a lot of miles on the car. On all three occasions, both low beams were inoperable when i started the car. Fortunately, i was not on the road driving. On every occasion, the dealer told me the bulbs were burned out. The most recent occurrence was the night of sept 10, 2015. This time the dealer told me toyota has a wiring solution that would extend the life of the headlights, but that i would have to pay for it.the "solution" would be expensive. I told them that statement tells me there is a defect in the wiring or electrical system, and the fix should be paid for by toyota under a recall notice. I have noted that prius owners have been complaining of this same issue since 2007 and a recall had happened in 2011 for earlier year cars.the problem remains, and there is defect in the car's wiring or performance.given the current vw diesel fiasco, i hope this issue can be addressed by the nhsta and force toyota to provide safe lighting to us prius owners.
When the headlights are turned on during the day (i.e. When it is raining), the lighted panel on the console fades to unreadable.since the speed is indicated on the console, we cannot monitor our speed during these times.this is particularly dangerous when we are highway driving.my toyota service dealer did not fix this problem when we took the car in for repairing this problem, nor did they respond to three surveys they and toyota sent to me in which i outlined the problem.
Due to faulty headlight wiring and assembly, headlights will burn out regularly or be too dim for safe use. Both headlights will go out without warning, while in use, at night. This is a significant safety issue and is a documented/known issue with toyota. This is not a mild annoyance and should be recalled.
Pulled into a parking spot at night, parked, turned the lights off, shut car off, returned to the car, started it and both low beams would not come on. High beams work fine. Not a fuse issue because horn works. Turning the light switch on the stalk turns on the dash indicator light but not the low beams or the parking lights.
Simultaneous failure of both low beam headlights.vehicle was parked and shut down in a parking lot with both headlight low beams operable.upon return to the vehicle approximately 15 minutes later, neither low beam functioned, requiring an extended night drive with high beams (fully functional).upon examination the next day, both low beams bulbs were burned out and replaced.prior to replacement, contact with dealer resulted in no assistance or information (they suggested it was simply coincidence.)
I replaced both headlights several times at a much faster time period than any other vehicle i have ever owned.once i even had to replace the headlamp assembly when one of the headlights generated so much heat that the headlamp assembly plastic melted.
Both low beam headlights failed within 1 week of each other. One while driving at night.
Both main headlamps have burnt out regularly for ~2.5 years. It seems to be getting more frequent. Luckily i can buy the part and install it myself, but to actually go to a mechanic and check the electric wiring is a different amount of time and money entirely.
Lights keep going out.i've replaced 5 times in the last year.still keep going out every 2 to 3 months.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that the passenger's side head light suddenly failed as the driver's side headlight became dim. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that theheadlight assembly would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 86,000. Updated 04-29-14updated 7/29/17
Dim headlight problem while driving at night, unable to see road clearly with low beam headlights on at night, have to use high beam headlights to see road. This is a huge safety issue for me
I was pulled over by the police, (while on a village street) because my headlight bulb was burned out.
Toyota prius 3 headlights quit working on low beam without any indication upon starting car. It appears that if one bulb burns out, both headlights fail to work, possibly due to the other headlight shorting out the working headlight. Each time the lights have worked just a few hours before and when we return to car, they will not turn on.this has occurred approx 3 times now forcing us to drive significant distances with high beams on. Lights appear to work ok after replacement of both bulbs. Please issue a repair recall to fix this issue which leaves a driver with absolutely no lights.
Starting on/about february 1st, 2011, any point source of light (i.e., traffic signal, headlight, taillight) viewed through the front windshield creates an optical effect of multiple images.the effect typically manifests as a triple image when the light is viewed from a distance -- one false image, each above and below the actual light. As the light source is approached, the images converge on the center (actual) light source, going from three (one false above and below) to eventuallyone image when the light source is very close (such as a car passing, going in the opposite direction).this effect has been continuously occurring sinceit was first noticed, and it occurs with all sources of light. It is most noticeable and distracting with headlights approaching from the opposite direction at night (especially a dark night on a dark road).
High intensity discharge (hid) bulb in front passenger side headlight went out. No explanation for why this occurred; it simply burned out. These bulbs should last a lot longer than 26,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving at various speeds, the low beam headlights failed. The vehicle was taken to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the headlight wiring harness needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000.
Headlights burn out frequently or stop working intermittently; headlight assembly on passenger side appears to have leakage and low beam appearsat a lesser brightness than driver side beam.had at dealer 4 times in same day for issue with driver headlight in summer 2015 and now at dealer for passenger side issues.this happens in unpredictable circumstances including after long operation or after having just started the vehicle - inconsistent.
My prius 2011 hybrid burning low beam headlight every one or two month. It is hard because no one have solution for this issue. The problem is not just changing the headlight every one or two months but the problem is safety, on highway once the light goes down. It happened to me! it was unbelievable.
Headlamp, 2011 prius 5 door hatchback, i have replaced the right headlamp 5 times since purchasing the vehicle in 2012. Recently the lamp above the the headlamp has also gone out. If you move the wiring i noticed the lights will work for a while then go out. The headlamps will work for a while when replace but with the last replacement the right new headlamp will not work.
There is a service bulletin concerning driver side low beam headlight malfunctiontoyota will be glad to fix the problem for $300bshead lights should work !!this should be a recall
On april 3 2012 we drove our 2011 toyota prius to a full and complete stop at a stop sign in a residential neighborhood.while we were stopped, the car surged forward approximately 5 feet before coming to a stop.my wife, who as driving looked down to check that her foot was on the brake.while staring at her foot squarely on the brake, the car surged forward again about 3 feet.the car then surged forward again about one foot before stopping.luckily there was no crossing traffic, pedestrians or any other obstructions.no collision occurred and no one was hurt.we called toyota care immediately and they promptly picked up the car and took it to the dealer.the dealer later called us and informed us that they had diagnosed the car and that no problem could be found.we disputed that we were unwilling to take the car back until a problem was found and they told us that they had done everything they could do and even had driven the car 10 miles with no incident.i informed them that we had driven the car nearly 10,000 miles and it happened once.once is too many times.the dealer told us we had to take the car back.we asked for a written statement guaranteeing the safety of the car and that the issue would not occur.they said they could offer no written statement, so we refused to take the car backwhat followed was essentially the dealer passing the buck to toyota corporate who basically told us that there was nothing they could do and that if we still had a problem we could go to arbitration.toyota corporate was neither reassuring nor helpful.we are now in arbitration with toyota.we have our arbitration hearing today.it has now been nearly two months since we have had the car, yet we are still paying the lease and insurance.we are not looking for money, we only want assurance and safety for our family.
As a driver this was disconcerting as i could not clearly determine if the car was at all driveable.if a driver were to stop immediately in the same situation they would be on the roadway.if i had not pressed on the accelerator pedal after powering on the car again i would not have known i could move the car to a safer location.display should read "hybrid system failure" then "limited ev power available" then "move to safe area if necessary"cause: hybrid inverter failure.repaired by toyota under 2014 eoe and new 10/2018 recall j0a
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that there was a fracture in the fuel tank that needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact stated that this was a global recall (toyota/australia: fuel suction plate), but was not yet a recall in the united states. The failure mileage was 58,000.
After receiving the computer update my fuel mileage has dropped 10 miles. The other problem in the rate of tire wear and pull. I took the car in for an alignment to a toyota dealership because it was pulling they told me they did the alignment. After i got my car back it was still pulling i questioned them and they said that was normal. The last thing is i got new tires put on the car and had to replace them 10 months later because there was about 15 percent tread life left. The tires were rotated properly.
My car hesitates to stop or slow down when brakes are applied driving over a pothole, slick surface, metal road cover or a manhole. Instead of slowing/stopping, the car seems to eject forward. I took it to the dealership where i bought my car and drove with a service tech and he said in over 20 years of his experience, he's never seen this. I tried to explain that this car (and technology with regenerative braking) is only 3 years old, but he didn't seem to buy my complaint, nor were we able to reproduce this issue when i drove with a technician around the block.there are several online discussions regarding this particular issue :http://money.cnn.com/2010/02/04/autos/prius_timeline/?wpmp_switcher=mobilehttp://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?section_id=30&doc_id=1284377.
Toyota after 2 months has not resolved this issue/recall. Since that i have to stop to share my car on turo and i'll have a lost of income.i'm asking for a compensation
While driving down city street at approx. 25 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost all power and had to be emergency steered without power steering to the side of the road, narrowly avoiding a crash. The dashboard showed "check hybrid system"; vehicle was inoperable and had to be towed.

2011 toyota prius.consumer writes in regards to electronic system recall.the consumer stated when she started the vehicle, the front panel lit up, but the ready light did not light up, and she was unable to shift gears and could not turn the vehicle off. After many attempts, the vehicle eventually shut off.after many tries, the ready light finally lit up and the vehicle operated normally.the same thing happened six days later. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they were unable to find a problem. Two weeks later, the problem happened again. The dear tried to tell the consumer, the problem was the battery. But, the panel showed the battery system was ok. The problem has since happened a fourth time. The consumer believed the recall that was previously performed, caused the issues.
The check hybrid system light came on.
New 2011 toyota prius shook violently upon startup. Severe engine noise for 10 seconds until smoothing out after 40 seconds. Dashboard and body panels visibly rattling. Only 970 miles on odometer. Checked internet, and found many others with same problem. Worried about drivetrain damage.
Was driving on the on the surface street about to get on the freeway and the vehicle would not accelerate the hybrid system light came on.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle burned an excessive amount of oil. The contact estimated that it burned a quart of oil per week. The contact called a local dealer (toyota carlsbad, 6020 avenida encinas, carlsbad, ca 92011) and was informed that the vehicle could be taken apart to find the issue, but there was no guarantee that this would remedy the failure. The contact spoke with the used car department and was informed that vehicles were not made like they previously were and was advised to purchase a newer vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact believed there was an issue with toyota vehicles. The manufacturer was notified of the issue and referred the contact to nhtsa. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Brakes completely failed. Loud beeping sound happened, couldn't stop car even in a parking lot. Had to use transmission to slow to a stop. Was in a grocery store parking lot.
Excessive oil consumption. Recently i notice oil pressure low light lights frequently.it used the oil was changed every time the maintenance light come up. About every 5000 miles. Now the low oil pressure comes almost every 1000 miles.the car only has 89k miles.
Came in for concern of the hybrid system light being on
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact was driving 55 mph whenm the vehicle unexpectedly shifted into neutral and a warning bell sounded. The failure had since recurred intermittently at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that she may have been inadvertently pressing the parking button. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was awaiting a response. The failure mileage was 800.
The contact stated that while driving approximately 75 mph, the vehicle would independently shift from drive into neutral after driving for a long distance. The contact restarted the vehicle and it resumed normal function. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal were depressed simultaneously, sending the vehicle into automatic override. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.updated 5/5/15
When breaking and still moving, the car will accelerate momentarily resulting in going faster for a second or two. This happened randomly over the years and may in some instances be related to hitting an irregularity in the road, but i cannot be sure. It has not caused an accident, but is strong enough that it could. I'm a pretty safe driver so tend not to ride on the tail of the car in front of me.i have not kept track of when it happens.
When braking while the vehicle is going over a bump or depression in the ground, the vehicle lurches forward.instead of stopping the vehicle seems to accelerate forward.this happens consistently in this setting.
My car had the hybrid system software update recall done and it still stall while driving , even at highway speed
My 2011 prius ii intermittently goes into reverse when i shift into drive. Approximately 10 times now since beginning. Twice it has gone into drive when i have shifted into reverse.
While driving my 2011 prius intermittently changes from drive to neutral.the car continues to roll but slows down.a warning comes up on the screen that the car is in neutral.i can pop the gearshift into drive and it seems fine, and may or may not behave the same way again.this has occurred on the freeway as well as on city streets.there does not seem to be any correlation to acceleration or deceleration or to movement (turns or changing lanes).i have taken it to the dealer who states that the systems check out fine and they were not able to duplicate the problem. (it is intermittent and i am not able to duplicate it either.) i never had this problem until after i had my car thoroughly steam cleaned. It has been suggested to me by another prius owner that it might be a switch.but, again, the dealer says the systems check out fine.
Lights keep going out.i've replaced 5 times in the last year.still keep going out every 2 to 3 months.
The contact owned a 2011 toyota prius. The contact was driving 8 mph when another vehicle crashed into the contact's vehicle on the passenger side door. The driver's side safety belt failed to retain the driver, causing injuries to the back and neck. The police were notified and a report was on file. The vehicle was destroyed. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop. The manufacturer was notified. The failure and current mileages were 8,000.updated 04/19/12*ljthe consumer also stated the air bag failed to deploy. Toyota sent the consumer a notice explaining the air bag did not deploy, because there was no direct frontal impact, only impact to the right front side of the vehicle/door area, the more yielding portions of the vehicle. There was insufficient abrupt forward deceleration of the vehicle to deploy the air bag. The letter also stated the seat belt operated as designed within the manufacturer's specification. Updated evoq 05/24/12updated evoq 06/18/12
The car was traveling at about 40mph when we t boned another car that entered our lane illegally.my wife applied the brakes and we skidded for about 10 yards before hitting the other car. Neither the seat belt restraining system nor the air bag system operated.
The driver's head seat, of the prius 2011, pops up when driving on a high way especially if the road is a bit rough.
I am 5'4" tall and like the seat in an upright position.there is no way i can adjust the headrest so that it allows me to sit upright and not have my head forced forward and down by the headrest.i understand this is a new "safety" regulation.this regulation needs to be changed so people of my height can drive the car without their heads being forced down.i use a foam cushion between my back and the seat to compensate for this terrible design flaw.i would like to be able to buy a car that is both safe and fits me.it is not safe to drive with my head forced down.by the way, your next box indicates bad website design.i want to put in n/a or always since there is no one time for this issue, but the stupid web designer doesn't think that should be an option.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that the drivers side headrest would slide up and out of the seat while driving. The contact also stated that the headrest would obstruct his vision when attempting to see what was taking place from the rear. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that all drivers side headrests on the 2011 model year vehicles function in the same fashion. The contact was also informed that the failure was not a safety feature. The failure mileage was 10 and the current mileage was 7,000.
The driver's head seat, of the prius 2011, pops up when driving on a high way especially if the road is a bit rough.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. Whether the vehicle was in motion or stationary, the heater was activated and the contact noticed a strong burning odor coming from the front driver side seat. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
I'm constantly hearing a barking/ purging noise coming from the brake accumulator pump whenever i do hard braking. Whenever i hit potholes or rough roads, the car would still rolls during braking as if the abs is getting triggered. I was quoted by toyota dealer of an estimate of $3000 to replace the brake accumulator pump and booster. I'm afraid that the brakes would fail while driving.
When i brake at the end of my road which has small holes or bumps, the car shoots forward very fast before it stops. This has happened numerous time. I thought at first i imagined it, or my foot slipped, but since it has happened numerous times i knew something wasn't right. So i got on web and started goggle it. And sure enough its happened to other drivers.
The brakes are pumping slow speeds and the vehicle makes much more noise.the car makes buzzing sound every 30 seconds or sooner.a repair person said it is the abs actuator that is about to fail.
The prius brakes do not work well under certain conditions. When i slow down the vehicle and am over uneven pavement or a pothole, the car feels like it lurches forward for a split second. My reaction is one of panic and to press harder on the brakes. My wife and i have experienced this four times since we have owned the vehicle. We feel very unsure of the brakes and worry for bicyclists or pedestrians.
While deploying brakes if you go over bumps they fail to brake properly. Feels like a speed up.this has happened numerous time while braking for traffic light or making turns.
Periodically, after going over a bump at fairly low speeds, the car will accelerate.in light of the other unintended acceleration issue reported under odi 10499911, i wonder if these two events are related -- possibly something to do with going from the motor to the battery?
All of the brake lights on my dash lit up, brakes weren't working well, took it to the repair shop and was told it was my brake actuator.
The check engine light is on; the car has stalled and looses powerit needs to have the sticky exhaust gas recirculationvalve taken care of.it also needs psv coverage for brake booster and brake booster pump assembly safety warrantee enhancement
When braking while the vehicle is going over a bump or depression in the ground, the vehicle lurches forward.instead of stopping the vehicle seems to accelerate forward.this happens consistently in this setting.
Brake booster assembly has a slow leak.solenoid keeps making noise and the booster assembly makes constant noise.when braking hard it does not stop properly.braking comes to a slow stop and but push down on the brake harder to keep the car from rolling forward.confirmed from technician at dealership yet are not authorized to replace it without error code (zjb program).contacted toyota corporate and they said without error code from vehicle they will not authorize the repair.despite confirmation from the technician that there is a leak in the brake booster the safety of the vehicle is in the hands of a error code.asked corporate if they can override the error code and they replied no.
When i was about to exit while driving on freeway, myabs, brake, tcs light is suddenly on, the brake need power to push and regenerate charger not working when brake pedal push, and make mpg drop.
Brake actuator has gone out giving a code of c1391.i have had the car less than a year and the brakes are now grabby and not functioning properly.this is a known problem with the gen 2 prius (my previous car) and was covered under an extended warranty.apparently the gen 3 prius has the same issue and toyota has extended the warranty of the 2010 prius to the manufacturing date of 11/2010.my prius was manufactured in 12/2010 and i was just notified it would be $4000 to fix the issue that is a known manufacturing defect.apparently toyota didn't fix the problem the first time and it's a direct safety issue when the brakes don't work as intended.

Was at a complete stop at a red light with my foot on the brake pedal.while at the red light, the brake pedal went completely to the floor.
My car was parked on the street,i got into it, turned it on, shifted to driving and started proceeding forward. I then noticed 3 lights (the abs light, brake light, and traction control light) suddenly appearedon the dashboard.nothing out of the ordinary occurred prior to the light coming on, it just suddenly appeared.the error codein the computer system read c1391. The details read there was "abnormal leak in accumulator".the car no longer drives safely. If the brakes are pressed suddenly the car skids instead of slowing down.in order for the car to come to a complete stopa lot more pressure has to be applied to the brake compared to before abs problem. The stopping distance has increased by approximately twice its length.the car is no longer capable of sharp turns, theback end of the car skids dangerously left or rightwhile turning, depending on the direction the driver is turning.the braking, handlingand control of the car decreases so much whenthe roads are wet that at times the car skids even when going at a cautious speed in rain. For my safety and for others i drive in "b" instead of "d" when it rains.
Hard knocking when turning on engine until i compress and decompress my break.has happened 3 times, only during the cold months

I have an early year 2011 toyota prius, the break booster and master cylinder assembly work intermediately. Sometimes it shows errors with lights illuminated on the dashboard and brakes have a lot of play and are spongy and other times they work perfectly normally. The vehicle was in motion and when i went to use the breaks in a traffic situation they ended up hardly working putting myself in a higher risk for a collision and putting my life endanger.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While the vehicle was stationary, all of the warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake master assembly and the brake booster needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 81,000.
The vehicle takes long stopping distance while brakingand , also l had many times when the car slipped while braking
The traction control light, antilock brake system not funtion and the light stays on
The brakes total disengage when applied on bumpy roads then work again after getting to a smooth surface.i reported this to the service manager at the new car owner meeting at toyota and was told that i just have to get use to antilock brakes.i haven't gotten into an accident yet but i had several close calls almost hitting cars in front of me on bumpy roads.has there been a recall for this problem?
While driving and braking on a bumpy road surface, the brakes will initially work, quit working momentarily, then reengage.this happens regularly.i just took it to the toyota dealership, and they say the brakes are fine and there is no problem.there was a toyota recall for this issue on 2010 models.i'm afraid this issue will cause an accident.how can i get toyota to address the problem?
Driving vehicle down highway, tapped brakes but brakes did not work, all the lights on my dash lit up. I lost traction in brakes causing vehicle to lose control.
Brake booster and actuator failed and error code c1391. Vehicle is unsafe to drive and toyota knows this problem because of the number of cases involved with this issue. The year prior saw a massive recall of 87,000 vehicles with the same issue. The same issue has carried over and toyota refuses to be held responsible for this issue.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that while braking on an incline, an abnormal metal-on-metal noise was heard from the vehicle. The noise would become louder when there was only one occupant in the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer fives times however, they were unable to duplicate or diagnose the problem. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 25,456.
My car spontaneously started showing the abs system warning light, the "brake" light, and the electronic stability control indicator light without warning while parked. As soon as this happened and i put it in motion, the car began responding poorly to braking, with increased pressure and lack of responsiveness. Additionally, the car is receiving barely any battery charge from the brakes (a small amount compared to the normally full charge), and a whirring noise can be heard about every 3 seconds ( the same whirring noise that occurs when the car is starting up, which i think may be related to the battery). This issue happened while the car was at rest, and affects the car while in motion and at rest. The car feels unsafe to drive due to unpredictability with the brakes and their effectiveness. I believe this issue may be associated with the brake actuator.
I was driving at about 35 mph and all of a sudden my brakes stopped working. The brake , abs and traction lights came on all at once.i somehow made it home but i could have easily crashed. I had my 9 year old in the back seat and he also got very scared.now i cannot drive my car and the brakes feel as they as stuck and very hard. I took my car to a reputable mechanic and he told me it is giving him code c1391. This is the same problem that the 2010 prius had under the recall. My prius is 2011 and not under the recall. I feel that the 2011 should be under recall because many thousands of lives are in danger now.
I have been lucky to miss closed-call hitting the car in front of me after skidding. When i apply brakes going down the ramp, the car skids and the brake doesn't stop the car until i get pretty close to the car in front of me. I am more concerned because some parts of the road are uneven where i live that increases the chance of brake failure. It happens on surface roads when there is a bump too. The braking distance increase when the street is wet.
The following is a summary of how i became aware of the power booster and master cylinder problem with my 2011 toyota prius.'upon discovery of multiple lights displayed on dashboard such as brake, abs system & traction lights, during driving the braking performance has changed drastically & the car no longer performs braking function adequately. Unable to rely on safe braking due to brake resistance felt with stiffening in which pedal depresses deeply & more time is required to come to a full stop. When braking the hybrid battery does not charge & runs dangerously low resulting in damage to the hybrid battery which can lead to substantial cost to replace the battery.'car brought to firestone for diagnostics. Upon further inspection by their technicianit was determined that the power brake booster/master cylinder was damaged & malfunctioning and was in need of replacement.informed repair would be in excess of $1,500.00.see enclosed supportive documentation from firestone diagnostics.
My son was driving my prius 2011 - i was in the passenger seat. We were sitting at a red light and he had his foot on the brake. Suddenly the car surged ahead although my son still had his foot on the brake. Immediately lights came up on the dash - brake, abs? and picture of a car with skid marks. The brakes were then spongy, there sometimes and then not. I have it in the toyota shop now and the repairs have been estimated to be $4,440. I did not buy the extended warranty. We met with the dealer and they were no help. I called toyota and they offered me $1,500.00 after i pay the bill and told me it could take up to 8 weeks for me to receive payment.
When driving over uneven surfaces like potholes and applying my breaks, i feel a delayed response until after i'm out of the pothole.in other words; i apply breaks, go over pot hole, breaks disengage even though the pedal is pressed, and reengaged once i'm on a smooth surface. This has been happening since i first bought my car five years ago, but i always thought it was me over thinking it.
Brake light, abs, slip indicator, brake system warnig light system all came on while driving at high velocity [75m/h] in the rain and lost 75% of the braking power plus the car started to slide. Needless to say this was a catastrophic failure of the entire brake system on a car that has a customer support program notification from toyota[zjb] that was sent to me with a warning of such occurrence. This is down right irresponsible to a major car manufacturer to allow these vehicles on the road without testing the entire system on each of these affected vehicles and with for a catastrophic failure to occur and cause public harm or even death. I had just taken the vehicle for service a few weeks prior where i explained the service advisor of an issue with brake pulsation. However, the entire brake system was not throughly checked and was just told that its the front rotors that are uneven, thank god i did not fully loose control of the vehicle and cause a catastrophic accident as it would have resulted in bodily harm to my family. I expect this federal government agency to use it's authority to prevent such occurrence to the tax paying citizens of this nation.
The brake system appears to break down; abs module and brake booster lose power.this causes braking to be harder and potential safety for the vehicle to lose all braking capability.this issue occurs when braking.there appears to be less air pressure in assist in the braking.reading online this is a very common issue for the 2011 vehicle!the 2010 model had a recall due to manufacture defect.https://www.carcomplaints.com/toyota/prius/2011/brakes/service_brakes.shtmlplease address soon because this is a major safety issue!
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated while driving approximately 20 mph on uneven road surfaces, the vehicle began to vibrate in a bouncing motion, when the brake pedal was depressed. The failure recurred four times. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 25,000.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving 65 mph, the brake pedal was applied and was stiff. The contact had to tap the brake pedal to slow down the vehicle. In addition, the brake and abs indicators were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to charles maund toyota (8400 research blvd, austin, tx 78758(866) 797-4354) where it was diagnosed that the brake actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 1901140996. No further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 119,384.
I was at an automatic car wash yesterday and after the wash finished i pulled out of stall with hardly any brakes.i was not able to pump them and had to take my car into a mechanic the brake actuator was out and the car is undrivable.the price for the part alone is over 2500.00 i was informed by the dealership that is was a recalled item but not for the yr of my car. If this would have happened in traffic or at a high rate of speed i know i would have been in a serious accident and i could have killed someone.
Takata recallmy 2011 prius has an issue where the brake becomes spongy at random while driving under normal conditions. The brake, abs, and traction control lights all illuminate simultaneously. After resetting the computer, the issue comes back within 10-30 minutes of driving at random. Toyota told me it is a $3,000 fix and there is no recall for my year. My car has 110,393 miles.
Break actuator is failing in my 2011 toyota prius. The car now has a unpredictable abs breaking system. Sometimes the breaks work and sometimes they quickly fail and a error light comes on. The light than goes out as if nothing happened and all is fine. This is a very dangerous problem that will lead to many accidents because the vehicle tells you its good to go, mean while the abs system is failing to stop the vehicle intermittently. I am scared because i dont know if the car will do this on a turn then lose control injuring myself and others.
Brakes completely failed. Loud beeping sound happened, couldn't stop car even in a parking lot. Had to use transmission to slow to a stop. Was in a grocery store parking lot.
My wife was driving our 2011 prius during stop and go traffic. She said the car just took off on her on it's own she tried to brake but it wouldn't stop. It crashed into the motorhome that i was driving.the air bags never deployed.the car was totaled due to the extensive damage.

I have experienced brake issues with my 2011 prius model since i leased the car in december 2011.when i am traveling at low speeds and i try to break going down hill and /or break over a bump in the road, the car accelerates prior to fully stopping.this has happened a total of 5 times since i leased the vehicle.it always seems to happen while i travel at lower speeds and the car lurches forward as i hit the breaks. I believe this is an issue that was experienced with 2010 models of the prius and appears to be another acceleration issue with toyota models in general.while there have been recalls on the 2011 prius for deficient airbags, this is an equally concerning fault in the car that should be reviewed.
Happen twice hit the brakes fairly hard on rough pavement not real rough didn't bounce just felt like i was on ice nothing there just a second or so butfelt like a long time if a car would have been in front of me don't know if i could have stopped in time.
Unknown cause. The breaks temporarily disengage (for anywhere between 1-3 seconds) when the car encounters a small bump or pot-hole in the road, while breaking downhill. Usually happens when breaking hard on a declined freeway off-ramp. This has almost caused me to rear-end another vehicle on multiple occasions.
I was applying my brakes as i was going down a slight incline over a bridge that is under construction so the road is bumpy.the car acted like the gas was applied instead of the brakes.it lurchedforward a little before the brakes fully engaged.
While driving on the highway all the break lights came on and stayed on brake, abs and skid lights on also noise under hood by brake master cylinder. Took it in to the dealership and they verified abs / brake lights on). Told me i needed toreplace brake actuator / brake booster pump / bleed / and re-flash system . Found out this also has been happening on the 2009 and the 2010 toyota prius hybrid and they have a recall out on this.i was told at the dealership that it was unsafe to drive the vehicle with this occurring
When i applied the brakes while going over a pothole or curb, the vehicle lurched forward. This has happened twice so far and i've only owned the car for a few months.
When i go over a bump or pothole and puton the brakes the car accelerates.toyota claims it is just how the abs brakes feel, but the car actually speeds up when i brake.happened multiple times since i bought the car.so far no accidents.
The abs braking system in this car is overly sensitive. This does not happen often, but it has happened enough over the past three years that i can clearly predict when it will happen again.if you are slowing down moderately say for a traffic light, on a dry road, but one that is in need of repaving (no pot holes, but just a rough surface), and if you are on a road that is going slightly downhill, the abs braking system kicks in without a need.this causes your foot to sink briefly to the floor (on the brake pedal) and give the feeling of a loss of braking for a few seconds. The brake pads are fine (even with such high mileage, i still have over 70% of the original brake pads left).i have brought this to the attention of my toyota dealer, who says everything is fine. The scenario described above might only happen once every few weeks, but both my wife and i have had this happen numerous times.i believe it is a software issue, perhaps related to overly sensitive sensors, perhaps in the rear of the car.
2011 toyota prius is displaying warning lights for brake, traction control, and abs. The automobile can no longer brake at the same effectiveness as prior. Car skids and slips when braking. Brake booster sounds intermittently every 10 seconds while operating. Called toyota regarding recall, recall is only available for cars with less than 150,000 miles despite the dangers this poses to drivers. My automobile has 165,000 miles. Toyota requiring drivers to pay out of pocket for known recall issue. Vehicle was stationary, parked, and weather conditions were dry and sunny when warning lights appeared.
The problem my car experienced happened while the vehicle was in motion on i-110 in pensacola, florida and presented itself abruptly (through the car's warning indicators at least) on friday, august 31st headed to pensacola beach for labor day weekend from our home in baton rouge, louisiana. All the car's brake warning lights came on simultaneously and without warning, the master brake light, the abs light, five different lights in all. I pulled off the interstate, went to an autozone store, checked the brake fluid level and brake pads (all looked nominal) and got the car's computer checked for warning codes (none came up). Seeing nothing catastrophic, but being unsure of whether our car was really safe to drive even though the brakes still felt functional (if a bit off), we got the car back to baton rouge and brought it to the local toyota dealership's (all-star toyota, on airline highway) service department. We had noticed for some weeks prior increasingly frequent buzzing sounds ' anyone with a prius knows these, such as when you turn the car off ' made by (i'm told) the car's brake actuator pressurizing the brake fluid. This escalating frequency of the noise, and a certain constant 'pulsing' of the sound when the brake was slightly applied, but not pushed down to the floor ' i now understand to be symptomatic of a failing brake actuator.following some research, i discovered in 2013 toyota issued a recall for thousands of 2010 prius and other toyota automobiles for a problem with brake actuators; also, in 2016, a warranty extension and part replacement was offered to hundreds of thousands of 2004 through 2009 toyota prius vehicles for problems with brake actuators. In that more recent matter, owners were offered a warranty extension to 10 years after first use of the car or 150,000 miles, or unlimited mileage or age up to the end of 2017.
My brakes make a weird noiseand i have to press hard to brake . Iā€™ve taken it to a couple of mechanics and the brakes are fine, but it might be the brake actuator.
The prius has a problem when braking over broken pavement or potholes. This happens when the brakes are applied to slow the vehicle and the car enters an area of the road where there is uneven ground. The brakes seem to not work for a second even if there is steady pressure applied to the brake pedal. This problem causes quite a startle to the car's driver. This is especially a concern to us when this happens at a crosswalk.this is an ongoing problem. Toyota of america has been contacted twice, i have taken the vehicle in to my local dealership but no fix is available.
Every once in a while - it can be months between events - our prius momentarily slams on the brakes when driving at highway speeds while nothing else is going on. We know it's not operator error. It's happened to my wife several times and me once. When it happened to me i was driving straight ahead on a dry, lightly traveled divided highway during the day. Everything on the dashboard lights up, alarms go off, the car decelerates like i suddenly stomped on the brake pedal though my foot never moved off of the gas, it lasts for maybe a second and then the car is back to normal. It's the same each time it's happened. Luckily each time this has happened we haven't had anyone tailgating us. We've taken it to the dealer multiple times. The first couple of times they looked at us like we were loony. They checked it out and we got it back with a message that said the technician checked the computer and test drove it for 20 miles and the car was operating as designed. Except it happened again. We finally convinced them that this was maybe a legitimate issue and they said they brought in a toyota field specialist who checked the car out and they said that the issue was the pcs wave radar sensor that was slightly out of alignment due to body damage (my wife had hit a small deer about a year prior to that - damage was minor and repaired at a local body shop).after they realigned the sensor, the car behaved itself for about five months. Until yesterday when it happened again.
When the brakes are pressed, if you hit a bump or pothole, the brakes lock and the car hydroplanes forward. I hit the back of someone because of this defect.
In january 2012, i purchased a new 2011 prius iii because i commute roughly 90 miles per day between home and school. Thinking this was the optimal vehicle i didn't think twice when signing on the line. This was my first new vehicle, and to be honest i had heard nothing but great things about toyota & thought i was going crazy when i started having issues with my brakes. Prior to owning this vehicle i own a subaru impreza sport that we had traded due to poor maintenance from the dealership, who didn't know how to balance the awd system & put a hole in my brake line. Being the my prior car had brake issues i denied the fact that my brand new car could have them as well. The issue is that anytime you hit ice, pot holes, gravel road, wet roads, bumpy roads etc, you lose control of the brakes. It feels as if they slip/accelerate and leave you in a moment of panic because it's not always a situation you can avoid. My car has been to the shop three times over the issue with a complaint on my braking system, and apparently this is a very known problem from toyota. It took my dealership 3 complaints before they consulted their prius tech, and basically printed off a paper with every complaint i listed above with no solution. They told us to call the toyota care number, which has been a problem in itself. When my father spoke to the toyota customer service on wednesday they said they had to allow them three days to illicit a response to the complaint. Keep i'm mind that the three days falls onto a saturday, and they therefore won't owe us a response until monday, quite frankly they won't have a solution to this issue, and they will continue to let their consumers drive around with brake issues that have put not only me but others as well into numerous dangerous driving situations.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, several warning lights displayed on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard which extended the braking distance. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v684000 (hybrid propulsion system). The vehicle was taken to marietta toyota located at (750 cobb pkwy s, marietta, ga 30060 (470) 938-8430). The dealer declined to offer the repair because the vehicle had a salvage title. The manufacturer was contacted and offered a software update of the hybrid system but declined to offer any additional repairs. The failure mileage was 101,000.
Brakes disengage momentarily when braking on a bumpy roadway. I have had this happen multiple times. It feels like the abs system releases the brakes and then reapplies braking. Luckily, i have not had vehicles in front of me.
Traction control, abs and brake lights came on today and brake pressure dropped severely while driving on the highway. Not safe to drive.
4 lights came on my dashboard: brakes, abs, etc. So i took the car to the dealership. They said i need a new brake accumulator but it isn't covered and is a $3500 repair. I see that the 2010 prius was recalled for this same part but they won't cover mine.
While applying brakes on a rough road or when crossing a pot hole, cracked road, or bridge joint the brakes fail momentarily allowing the car to lurch forward.i purchased the prius new in 2011 and have told the service folks at toyota about the problem and they always tell me it?s normal for a prius without noting anything in my file.i am here to tell you that the prius brake design is faulty and the nhtsa should be investigating!
There were three driving instances where, when applying the brakes, my brake foot went completely to the floor. Twice i was on the city street and once in a parking space.my speed at the time was slow but the brake peddle going to the floor did not stop it. No turn was involvedit did stop eventually but the car was carried much further than expected with no braking control.the only collision was when the front end hit a log in my home parking area.the car was towed to the dealer's service dept., but after 4 hours, i was told, "could not duplicate concern customer will have to return when fault is current". They drove it and used their computer but nothing faulty was evident.i was sent off in the car.with an intermittent failure, it wasn't likely.so, now i have a car i don''t dare to drive and won't sell because it's a hazard!
Abs brake light and traction lights are on. C1391 internal failure in brake actuator assembly.
Brake accumulator failure. Specifically repair t-sb-0079-18abs, traction, brake lights on. Brakes not as responsive/spongey. No regenerative energy from braking
The brake booster is cycling and lights go in and off. I've read that this means it's a failed breaker booster or pressure valve in the breaking system. It's very common to fail, lots of people have reported it
The vehicle was in motion. Several warning lights on the dash came on at once, and the brakes required significant additional pressure to operate. We drove he vehicle home, and then to a nearby repair shop. We were informed that the brake booster had an internal leak, and required replacement. This is the same part that was addressed in a customer support program for the 2010 my prius; however, the 0211 prius is not covered. 110,000 miles.
Warning lights for traction control, brake, ave all appeared, and then braking dramatically changed.almost like not having power brakes.lights went off and normal brake finction returned.the warning indicator lights go on and off, at random.code c1391 shows when scanned.this is same symptom as exhibited by2010 model year priuses covered by recall.mine is 2011, exact same issue but not covered by recall.problem has occurred at low 5-25 mph and highway speeds (55-70 mph) this is very dangerous as if this happens at high speed (highway) and the problem occurs there is a sudden change in braking quality an accident may result.this happens when the vehicle is moving, at any speed.
Had the traction, abs, and brake lights all pop on. Braking feels a little different now. C1391 code was given by mechanic. He is talking about brake parts that will cost parts and labor around $2500. I can't afford this and i need a car to drive, so hoping no wrecks. We are a toyota family with 4 now in the family. Called to complain to toyota headquarters and they said out of warranty, but they did recall the 2010 models, even though the same problem is with the 2010-2015 and some other toyotas. They basically blew me off.
My brakes consistently lock and the car lunges forward when i hit a pothole while braking.this caused a crash when the car was only a couple years old when the brakes failed to stop the vehicle and it lunged forward into the back of a car.this is extremely dangerous and i've seen this comment often with this vehicle.i don't understand why toyota has not addressed this issue.
This has happened multiple times since i purchased this vehicle. The first time this happened was at 2,500 miles. While applying brakes on a rough road or when crossing a pot hole, cracked road, or bridge joint the brakes fail momentarily allowing the car to lurch forward. It his happens regardless of the speed. I could be traveling at 15 or 50 mph and the brakes will fail and lurch forward. I purchased the prius new in 2011 and have told the service folks at toyota about the problem and they look at the vehicle and are not able to find a reason for this brake failure. This is dangerous. I have to make sure i start braking a good distance from a car in front of me as i am afraid this defect will cause an accident. If i have to brake suddenly and am driving over any road that is not smooth my brakes fail and lurch forward. How many people need to get injured or die before toyota fixes this defect?
Car was off and parked. When i entered the vehicle to turn the car on, i held the brake and pressed the power button in order to start the car. And with my foot still on the brake, i shifted the car into reverse to pull out of the parking spot. As soon as the car was shifted into reverse, the car moved backwards with my foot fully pressed on the brake. The car felt like the brakes were not engaged. I looked down to make sure i was pressing on the brake, and the brake was completely depressed. I could even feel the hill assist threshold but the brakes were not engaging. In a panic i pressed the "p" (park) button to try to stop the vehicle. The vehicle rocked back and forth as if the vehicle was in motion when the "p" button was pressed.i got out of the vehicle to see if i was on a pothole or hill, anything to explain the move, but nothing was there, completely flat road. This has happen quite a few times when at a park and i had to contact cdsp over electronic issues over this vehicle. I am no longer going to continue with this vehicle.
We purchaseda 10 month old toyota prius on march 16nd 2012 with only 1367 miles.the prior owner who was leasing this car returned the car due to mileage inconsistency.....on oct 5th 2012, i was driving on sunny dry day at 22mph the vehicle in front of me slowed down. I stepped on the brake to slowdown but the car did not stop. When i stepped on the brake it did not respond immediately, i applied complete pressure to the brake however the car still did not slow down enough and i hit the car in front of me. Per the report from toyota the speed went down from 22mph to 5mph at the time of the impact. I do not agree with the toyota report that i only stepped on the brake for 2 seconds asit wasmuch more...before the accident the brake was much harder and less forceful pressure made the car stop after the accident the brake feels softer and more pressure is needed to make the brake work. This is an almost brand new car with 7k miles on it however i do feel safe in this car anymore after this accident and i fear for my life and public safety.what will happen i drive on a highway at 60mph and the brake will not work??toyota denies any technical error with the car and blames the accident on me. There are plenty of reports of similar accidents reported by consumers on this same issue here:http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0db60b.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving approximately 40-50 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and an abnormal noise was heard. The contact stated that the abs warning indicator illuminated and the brake pedal was difficult to depress. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. Marietta toyota (750 cobb pkwy s, marietta, ga 30060,(770) 422-1490) was notified. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 182,000.
Noticed brakes breaking intermittently about a week after purchase. Dismissed it because of weather and it was a new car, thought it was just different feel from my last vehicle. I don't drive often averaging 10,000 miles or less per year, so when i noticed this problem repeating, and actually near causing an accident i got concerned. Took it to the dealership today, they found nothing wrong, and on the way home experienced the same problem. The inability to stop completely presents a hazard, especially when this occurs under normal braking conditions. If the dealer can't find the problem what recourses do consumers have?
I was getting on the interstate and all of a sudden i lost power and my dash lite up check hybrid system /abs/ breaks. I can not drive my car because it has no power please help thank you
Traction control and abs warning lights came on. Cruise control stopped working. Took it to toyota who said codes indicated failure of master cylinder. Cost of repair $3,400. I think they have a defective part problem.
The emergency brake light, abs, and traction lights illuminated on the dashboard.took the car into the dealer and they reported that the brake booster and master cylinder needed to be replaced.the car was stationary when the lights initially came on and the lights stayed on while it was moving (highway and city streets).the 2010 toyota prius was recalled for the same problem.it seems the 2011 continues to have the same problem.
Brake accentuator failed - no warning and traction control/brake light/abs warning lights all illuminated.hard breaking test @25 mph confirms abs not working (i.e. Tires skid) and breaking distance adversely impacted for normal braking. Hybrid system charging from braking is diminished.
This was not the first incident, but the most noticeable. When braking and coming to a stop, if the tires hit a pothole or any kind of hole or bump in the road, the vehicle accelerates suddenly.today, it accelerated as i was braking and coming to stop at a red light.my back right tire went over a pothole, and the car jumped and accelerated about 10 feet.luckily there was no car in front of me.
When i am coming to stop at an intersectionon a bumpy or uneven or snow covered road and apply the brakes the car lurches forward instead of stopping.i am lucky i haven't hit a car in front of me or a person crossing at the intersection.i have been reading the other complaints and they describe exactly what is happening with my car.i haven't yet tried to get this fixed, but i am starting today.
While pressing the brake pedal in a bumpy road ,i feel the car accelerates and try to jump and i usually press the brake hard to stop. I have been experiencing this several times but never report. To clarify more , it happens while pressing the brake.
Was exiting the highway and was braking on the off ramp when i lost brakes and had to drive up on the bank.upon releasing the brake pedal and re-engaging the brakes, i had brakes and came to a stop.
While driving on the highway, without warning, i lost power assisted breaking ability - accompanied by a number of dashboard warning lights. I was able to safely stop the vehicle using manual breaking. I had the code checked and have learned that the (code 1391) brake accumulator failure is a common issue in the prius and has been subject to a recall/replacement for the years prior to my make (i believe 2008-2010). Clearly this is still an issue and the sudden/no-warning failure of the system causes an alarming and potentially dangerous loss of breaking control during high speed driving. Luckily, i was not using the breaks at the time of the failure and was able to determine that the manual break pads were serviceable but i needed to rapidly increase the pressure on my breaks to slow down sufficiently to avoid an accident.
Just want to add to the list of complaints about this car lunging forward when the brakes are applied, primarily when the car is driving over rough terrain but not always. It is always unexpected. I've had to change the way i drive, but i'm not always sure i could stop it in every circumstance. I've taken the car in to a toyota service center twice to look at it. They either can't get it to happen while they have the car or they say it's normal. It's not normal for any car i've ever had in twenty plus years of driving. It has only gotten worse and more frequent over the course of the three years that i've had the car.
Abs actuator malfunction
We have been experiencing braking abnormalities for 1-2 months, and when our brake malfunction light came on we had it checked out. Initially, about 1 month ago, the toyota dealer's service dept. Could not detect an issue, so simply reset the computer. But, again, the malfunction light returned and again, we returned the car to the service dept.on this occasion, they told us that nitrogen gas has leaked from the accumulator into the braking system. Research indicates that this is a similar problem experienced by 2010 prius owners. We would love for toyota to fix this issue rather than us cover the $5000 for brake system replacement.
On at least six occasions, i have lost control for a second or two while braking. While applying the brakes, and simultaneously crossing any sort of uneven terrain, the vehicle suddenly darted forward as i slowed. After reading a large number of similar incidents via a web search, i decided i needed to report this possibly dangerous issue.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that while pressing the brake pedal to stop, the pedal had extending to the floor resulting the braking distance to be extended. The contact indicated on two separate occasions while the failure occurred the vehicle made contact with an object and a pole. The cause of the failure was not determined. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer fernelius ford located at 10459 n straits hwy, cheboygan, mi 49721 who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 78,000.
I was on driving on the freeway when suddenly traction control light was on and brakes seemed to have locked. The conditions of the road were dry and i was driving the speed limit. This occured on a few different occasions. One day brake light, abs and traction light all appeared. Took it into toyota dealership and was informed it was brake booster.
Brake light, antilock light, vehicle stability light, and yellow trains came on. Having problem with braking. Does not not seem to brake as good. It is very dangerous when driving.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle hesitated to decelerate without warning. The contact stated that the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. The contact stated that the brakes needed to be pumped in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake cylinder assembly needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 59,000.
Brakes failing when applied hard or while driving over bumps.
Brake/trac/abs lights on and will not turn off when parked or in motion.the lights came on the next day after parking overnight.hybrid battery not recharging from braking.car makes a whirring sound every 2-3 seconds, seems to be coming from the braking system.feels unsafe to drive since braking distance feels longer.car has about 197,000 miles.
The abs/brake/skid/warning triangle on.my 2011 prius iii is 121k mile.this went on/off for a few days then it was on the whole time.the brake seems to loose the hydraulic power brake. I feel like the brakes feel weird whenever hit small bump, brake just failed for asecond.i went to toyota dealership they said it's the actuator that need to be replaced and it's expensive $2-3k. They said it need to be fix soon because brake might fail at any time.there seems to be a warranty enhancement for the 2010 and older but not 2011 and newer. Seems like toyota still have the same issue with newer model, not fixed yet.please bring this issue up for safety reason.
Love my prius until i started to become scared daily by the unsafe driving conditions due to the car's tendency to lurch forward while braking over bumpy ground or potholes when coming to a stop or slowing down to turn.it's rather startling and fortunately has not caused an accident yet for no other car has been around when this happens. A different story with the other more serious issue with the braking system when needing to come to an immediate stop due to sudden stopping of the car in front.about a month ago, i experienced the "no brake" issue when suddenly needing to press hard on the brake for a stopped car in front of me.i had plenty of distance for stopping but because of the "no brake" issue had to steer off to the side to miss the car.shocked and confused at what happened, thought maybe i did something wrong by not pumping the brake.then two days ago, i was sitting at a red light when it turned green, traffic started moving but then suddenly stopped for an emergency vehicle to go through the interception.i pressed on the brake hard and just kept moving right into the rear of the truck in front.i now have about $1,800 of damages for the truck (no damage caused to it) had an hitch which punctured my bumper and bent the air condenser. I have decided not to fix it for it could happen again.when i decide what's my next safe car to purchase, i will have it fixed and trade it in for it as soon as possible for i'm now scared to drive it.the dealership reply to my concern is the same as with everyone else's complaint and review i have read, this is how the brake system works and no error.they do not want to take responsibility of this faulty brake system which creates unsafe driving conditions.fortunately it was a truck in front of me this time. But what if it's a person walking across the road in front of me next time??
While pulling into a parking slot in a parking lot, which was on a slope, i applied the foot brake without any response whatsoever.the vehicle gained enough speed to jump the small stop-curb and hit a concrete wall next to it.the damage to the front of the car was just over $4000.i thought i had missed the pedal.on june 12th and 15th, i had two more incidents of the brake pedal going all the way to the floor while either at slow speed or stopped.my dealer says it was a problem on the 2010, but he has not seen it on a 2011.my wife now refuses to drive the car.
When i'm braking and slowing down gradually, as when approaching a red light, the brakes momentarily stop working and the car feels like it surges forward if it hits a low-traction surface like a pothole or manhole cover or wet spot. I saw there was a recall for this in 2010, but 2011 model consistently does it and has caused me and my friend to nearly rear-end other cars when driving my car. Apparently, it pertains to the regenerative braking system being turned off when the abs engages, leaving only friction brakes.this happens several times a week on the wet roads where i live (near seattle, washington). This has happened since i bought the car new in 2011 but i'm complaining now because my friend borrowed it and almost rear-ended someone and pushed me to report it.
The 2010 prius will suddenly develop brake faults. The brake, abs and traction control lights will light up on the panel. The cars braking capacity effectively reduces to 50% and the regenerative charging also goes missing. This is an issue when the car all of a sudden would brake with half the capacity anticipated putting the occupants and others around at huge risk. Toyota does not have a plan to fix this issue yet - they would reset the code which fixes the problem but for a couple of trips / days / weeks.. An uncertain time until this happens again.replacing brake oil, boosters and pads did not help. I am not sure what could the remedy be, please advise toyota to investigate and create a formal recall where all effected cars could be repaired for the drivers safety.
My car only had 120k miles and the break boostor and actuator breaks down while we were on the road. My wife drives the car with my 3-childrens. She was almost hit the other car on highway because the breaks system stops working at normal mode. The dash board shows all kinds of break, traction control, and abs lights . This is a life threatning issue and toyot needs to replace this part with no charge becasue it has a manufacturing defects and thousands of prius owner has the same issu.
Brake actuator
The traction control, abs light and warning light all came which i believe all to be a safety issue
Abs lights on ,tracks warning lights on and vsc lights on .its a serious problem. Toyota should fix it . Toyota should own its problem
A few weeks ago my brake and abs lights came on and my brake pedal changed and became spongy. Since i was still able to brake, i kept driving the car and became used to the spongy pedal. Then the other day i was returning home from work when the car in front of me suddenly hit his brakes. I had to quickly hit mine as well and the brakes locked up sending the car sharply to the right and i crashed into the guard rail causing $1500 worth of damage. I picked up the car today after having the damage repaired but i still have the same problem.
The prius failed to stop when brakes were applied; instead the car did a lurch when the brakes were applied and then accelerated forward causing a 4 car collision; luckily no one was injured. Made toyota aware of the problem, when they investigated they of course found nothing wrong with the vehicle's brake system.
2011 toyota prius. Consumer writes in regards to defective brakes and electrical issues. *ldthe consumer stated the master warning light, air bag light, slip indicator light, and brake sysytem light all illuminated.
The abs traction, control and brake light come on for 2 to 3 hours. Then the light will go off throughout the day and then the lights will pop back on and i just went to stop my car went sideways scariest moment ever . The other vehicle on the 2 lane road i was on swerved off the road to avoid hitting me because the vehicle went sideways . At this time all 3 lights were lit up . I drive about 10 hours a day . Please investigate. (nearly died as well as the guy in the other vehicle)
While driving on a rough road surface and applying the brakes the car lost its brakes or the power to the brakes and surge forward.there was a feeling that the abs had engaged than disengaged leaving the car with no brakes.normally the brakes are very consistent, they slow and stop the car quickly and safely, however when the brakes are applied while riding on rough roads they become very inconsistent and unreliable.it feels that the brakes stop functioning, braking distance becomes longer as does the time required to stop the car.i first noticed this condition while braking on a rough road at about 30 mph.the condition now occurs not only when driving on rough roads (paved roads with potholes/pothole repairs) but also on wet/slick roads.this condition is intermittent but is occurring more frequently and at any speed, road surface and weather condition.the dealership has been unsuccessful in replicatingthe condition by driving the car over rough roads and applying the brakes. They tell me that unless they can experience the condition (see for themselves) they can not diagnose or repair the condition. Toyota corporate tell me they stand behind the dealership and can do nothing.
The attraction brake and abs lights come on, the brake become spongey and fail to stop the vehicle , i almost had an accident while this happens while i was driving the vehicle
From the very start of my owner ship of a new toyota prius, the car started lunging when i would try to stop. It has continued to do so and i finally asked a friend who also has a prius if she has that problem too and she does. I don't know what to do but i fear the safety of a car that lunges when you are trying to brake.thank you for your time. Updated 11/24/2014
The brakes temporarily disengaged sometimes when braking. At around 100,000 miles, the brake accumulator would constantly make noises while driving and after shutting the car off. Eventually the brake accumulator and brake booster failed completely at 117,000 miles, costing around $4,000 to repair.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While attempting to park, the driver depressed the brake pedal and suddenly the vehicle accelerated forward and crashed into a pole. During the crash, the front end sustained significant damage. The air bags did not deploy. No injuries were reported and a police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 21,000.
The following dashboard lights came on on our vehicle at the same time:traction mode, emergency brake, abs, and brake system warning light. Since the lights have came on, i have noticed that i have to press down further down on the brake to stop the vehicle. My stopping distance is further now as well.
Toyota had a customer support program zjb for default brake booster/master cylinders on the 2010 prius models.i have a 2011 prius that has been diagnosed with the same problem and there is no customer support offered.this warranty enhancement on the 2010 models is good thru 11/30/19 regardless of mileage.even though my vehicle has the exact problem there is no recognition for support due to the year of this vehicle.i was not aware i even had a problem until i took it to the dealer for a software recall update.we were experiencing heavy rain and my indicator lights came on which is why they checked this and confirmed the issue although my brakes are working fine.i am not understanding why toyota is not honoring the fix for the default or why after discovering this issue in 2010 the 2011 would not be considered.i would appreciate some help in this matter.
I was traveling down a mountainous road and the road surface changed from gravel to asphalt.i was also braking at the same time when the brakes seem to become nonexistent and the car just lurched forward.this has happened 3 times before.
I was moving forward in a turn lane on a city street preparing to make a left turn.a vehicle cut in front of my car and it was necessary to make a quick stop to avoid an accident.immediately red warning lights lit up indicating a problem with the brakes.the repair statement from the dealer indicated that the brake booster with master cylinder assembly had failed and needed to be replaced.the repair required over two weeks to complete and i was informed that the procedure in the service manual for repairing the problem was incorrect.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated while driving 40-45 mph, the brake pedal temporarily disengaged on its own when the vehicle hit a bump in the roadway. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving at various speeds. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.
First incident: was traveling approx. 68 mph on 405 freeway in los angeles (downhill into the san fernando valley). Dry conditions. Attempted to stop as cars ahead of me began to slow/halt and car lurched forward, carrying me to almost hit the car ahead of me, stopping only inches behind.dealership could not replicate and dismissed my concerns. Multiple similar incidents all in good weather have occurred.most recently on surface road with uneven pavement, traveling at less than 15 mph. Braking for stopped vehicles ahead, resulted in car lurching ahead.
When i push on the brakes and i happen to go over a bump or a pot hole, my prius speeds up.it accelerates when i try to decelerate.i have to push harder on the brakes to really slow the car down.this problem happens when i'm driving at around 40mile/hr.i have a 2011 type iii prius.i took my car to the toyota dealer and they claimed that they could not reproduce the problem.this is total bs because as soon as i got it back from them i could reproduce the problem on my way back home.please advise me of what to do.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving various low speeds, the abs and traction indicators illuminated without warning. In addition, when the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle lunged forward. The dealer (universal toyota in san antonio, texas) diagnosed that the brake booster and the pump for the booster/accumulator were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with case number: 180-4162-158. The failure mileage was 98,000.
Numerous times when trying to stop, the vehicle would loss control of the braking when going over even the smallest of bumps. A few times even the traction control light would luminate when this happened. It also appeared that the vehicle would accelerate just slightly during this braking rather than slowing down. The best way to describe how the vehicle felt, is as if it was "hydroplaning", there was not control over the steering or braking. This happens every time the vehicle goes over any type of bumps, or potholes. I have children and this is definitely a concern. I have been told this is "normal", however i fear it is definitely a safety concern.
After applying brakes car continued to move forward through garage opening crashing into wall at end of garage before it stopped.brake was not slowing/stopping vehicle
When i brake on an uneven surface (potholes, bumps, etc) the car will sometimes jump forwards.i am unsure whether it is referred to as brakes slipping but it is exactly the same thing that i've read happening to many people.it was an issue in the 2010, which led to a recall, yet there is no recall on the 2011.it doesn't make any sense, people have said that the actuator was the part that needed replacing, yet it is a $3-4k part and should not be left up to the consumer.this is a safety issue and is a known problem and needs to be addressed by toyota.it has been happening ever since i've owned the car.i have been lucky so far that it hasn't accelerated me into another car or person.
While in motion when i pressed the brakes the pedal went to the floor. Brakes failed. Rapid beeping with brake light on. I pushed on the brakes and there was nothing. I did some research and this vehicles are having a problem with the brake booster assy. There is a recall for the same parts for the 2010 prius, not2011 - 2015
Car was in motion about 20mph. When brakes was applied, the car failed to slow down but instead quickly accelerated. Continuously applying the brakes did nothing. Car came to a stop apply running into another car.
Brakes became sluggish. Brake/abs/car skid warning lights came on.
On uneven road surfaces (washboard road, many small potholes, gravel roads, rough road shoulders) brakes would give out if braking hard.if felt like once abs kicked in the brakes would get almost completely released.the car would brake just fine on flat surfaces, wet or dry.i have multiple vehicles and know how abs brakes work but thought the prius brakes were just a bit more sensitive and i have to watch my distances more carefully and avoid hard stops. Then on april 23, 2018 the car started to make some strange noise but no dashboard lights came on.i continued driving and noticed the brakes were working only intermittently.after i almost crashed when attempting to break in traffic i limped back home and took the car to the dealership.the repairs to replace brake pump and cylinder assemblies cost $4,193.31 but the car was driveable again.however, i noticed that the repairs also corrected the abs problem that was present since the car was new.i think anyone who drives a 2011+ prius should get their brakes checked for emergency braking where brakes stop working thus allowing the car plow ahead even if the brake pedal is down to the floor.
The vehicle was parked in a typical supermarket parking lot during a normal sunny day.the vehicle starts normally as the brakes are depressed.after putting the car in reverse, the brake pedal pushed back as the vehicle starts to back up.the brake felt very stiff and would not depress until the foot is lifted and re-stepped on it.it has happened about a dozen times in the last 3.5 years, no specific place or time.was not able to be duplicated at the dealerships. The dealer said it's safety feature when you step on the brakes too hard, it locks up as in a hand brake.however, the lockup i experienced is different and only happens occasionally during reverse where the brakes is not stopping the car from moving.seems to occur more often on sloped surfaces than flat, but cannot duplicate as it happens randomly, usually with multiple passengers in the car.this can be a real safety hazard if some one is behind the vehicle.
Brake actuator failure. Abs, traction control, and brake light all on dashboard. The car has no regenerative braking. Issue occured randomly while in motion.
Three weeks ago the brakes failed at a stop light on a city street and the abs and brake lights came on in the dash.the brake fluid appeared to be low so we opened a new bottle of fluid and filled the reservoir which seemed to temporarily remedy problem and nothing could be diagnosed because no lights were on in dash.the exact same thing happened again with the brakes failing and the dash lights coming on while at a red light on a city street.we had to havevehicle towed and were told it was the master cylinder assembly, booster pump etc. And wasn't covered under warranty at $6400.the car has 82,925 miles and has been maintained.
While driving down the highway or interstate, my traction warning light, the brake light, and the abs warning light all came on, and the brakes became hard to press. When letting off the brake, there was an airy, suction sound. After a while, while driving, all of the warning lights went off, and the brake pressure normalized. There is still an airy sound when i use the brake pedal, though, which always seems to be there, even when the warning lights are off. This has happened about 4 times within the past six months. I had a diagnostic test run, and it gave code #1391, leakage in accumulator abnormal, which pointed to an internal leak in the brake booster/master cylinder assembly. I noticed that toyota has issued recalls for this same problem in 2010 and prior prius models, but mine does not qualify because it is a 2011. Since this issue has not been resolved and appears to be a defect in toyota's brake booster assembly, i would like to see this recall extended to cover models beyond 2010.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving a squilling came from the brakes. The braking distance was extended. The contact was concern the vehicle unsafe to drive.the contact stated that while operating the vehicle a squilling noise was present coming from the front of the vehicle and when pressing the brake pedal the braking distance was extended. The vehicle was taken to the local service center server co toyota(2841 pukoloa, hi) who diagnosed that the brake actuator was faulty and needed to be replaced.the vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 144,000.
Brake, traction control, tire pressure, abs lights all come on while driving. Took to shop. Claims it's the brake booster/ actuator problem. Customer support program
Car lurches forward when brakes are applied on bumpy or uneven surfaces, as well as slippery surfaces such as metal plates that you sometimes find covering city streets under construction. On ice, when applied forcefully, no braking action occurs whatsoever, even when pumped or release and reapplied.in jan 2013, car slid more than 150' on a lightly snowy road into a ditch.my sense is anti-lock brakes are defective, but it could be some other computer override that kicks in.when stopping for a traffic light on a bumpy road, or over one of those construction plates, it's scary, and i feel lucky i haven't hit anyone.
Around 100,000 miles the brake system has been sluggish and it appears the abs system is failing. Currently the car has 118,617 miles and constantly exhibits sluggish and spongy braking. Hitting a pot hole or any type of bump while pressing the brakes can cause the abs to light up temporarily and the brakes feel as if they release for 1 second and re-engage. When pressing the brakes there is a popping/air-like sound in the brake system constantly. Bleeding the brakes did not solve this issue. Through research i have discovered this is a complaint of many prius owners about their brake actuator. It is a $1700+ part that, if fails, will cause the entire brake system to fail.
While stepping firmly on the brake and shifting into reverse, the vehicle moved approximately 18 inches backwards then stopped suddenly.this has occurred on at least three separate occasions, although usually when starting the vehicle.this time i paid close attention to the position of my foot on the brake.it was firmly pressed, but traveled only 1-2 inches.after the vehicle stopped and i was satisfied that i hadn't made a mistake i released the brake and reapplied it.this time it traveled the normal 3-4 inches.each time i have the car serviced at the dealer i mention this to the technician.they reply that they've heard of that happening, but offer no solution.
Braking over uneven road surface cause loss in braking force. This only occurs while braking over uneven road surface. Very close calls.
I have a 2011 prius and if while i am braking, i drive over a bump in the road, the brakes release. I must re-apply the brakes to re-engage them. I feel this is very dangerous. There are numerous website references to this problem. When will a recall happen before someone has a serious accident?
The car stop working all the dash lights stop working ,the brakes start getting harder and the don't stop at all and beeping without stop that noise and the hibryd system stop working after i living for some recalls repairs and the want me to fix the car to pay and i know is not my fault everything is because is this car is all electronic system.never on my live i have this problem with my other cars.only with this one and now they one me to pay for something the company makes wrong.this is not fair at all.before i was recomended this car but right now people ask me and i have to talk negative situation about it.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that the horn was inoperable. When the steering wheel was turned to the left or right, the horn functioned as intended. However, if the steering wheel was centered, the horn would be inoperable. The vehicle was taken to lia toyota of northampton (located at 280 king street, northampton, ma 01060, tel: 413-341-5299) where it was diagnosed that the clock spring failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 117,000.
I was stopped at a signal and then started to proceed once the light turned green. I couldn't drive any faster than idle speed. Even at that speed the car was out of control,it wasswerving, even though i was holding the wheel straight. The street had a dusting of snow. All of the other cars were able to drive at the posted speed limits without any difficulty. I took the car to the dealership ,they advised me to get new tires, which i did even though the car was only 9 months old .the dealership checked the computer and steering systems. They informed me that nothing was wrong with either. This steering problem has happened 3 more times. Each time it happens there is snow on the ground but everyone else is able to drive at the posted speed. This situation has happened when it was bitter cold and when it was 30 degrees out. When the car swerves, it enters other lanes, even at idle speed. I am very luck not to have had an accident. I am so upset that i am getting a new car. I fear for my life.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated when making a turn the steering wheel would become stuck in the position the vehicle was turning too. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the steering gear assembly was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 124,117.
Horn stopped working. Only works when steering wheel is turned left or right.forums have posted that it could be the spiral cable from other vehicle owners. This replacement is over $1,000.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that the soy based plastic cabin entryways were missing the screens. The failure allowed rodents and mice to enter the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
Unnecessary minor injury producing designmy prius, which i like, has several times given me a minor bruise that lasts for a couple of weeks.the front passenger doors, at the bottom corners, end in a sharp right angle.in contrast, many other car doors have a slightly rounded bottom corner which have never injured me.as i am walking around the prius, loading and unloading for example, that sharp corner seems to catch my shin and bruise it.i am in my 70's and guess that these minor injuries are more likely to happen with children and seniors.if this was a needed element of design, then i would not call this to your attention.however it seems to be primarily poor ergonomics on the part of the designer.if the injury potential of sharp corners was brought to the attention of car manufacturers, perhaps, when designs are changed, the safer corner could be incorporated at essentially no cost and numbers of future minor injuries could be avoided.
While driving approximately 65 mph, a scraping type noise was heard under the vehicle and a bump was felt. The contact discovered that the front driver side wheel well dislodged from the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 69,255. The vin was not available.
The prius failed to stop when brakes were applied; instead the car did a lurch when the brakes were applied and then accelerated forward causing a 4 car collision; luckily no one was injured. Made toyota aware of the problem, when they investigated they of course found nothing wrong with the vehicle's brake system.
On december 8th, 2018, i was driving eastbound on interstate 10 in phoenix, az at approximately milepost 141 around 5:45 pm.suddenly, i heard a large, *bang* which sounded like a gunshot.i immediately checked myself for injuries and felt the car to determine if a tire was blown.i was intact, and the tires seemed ok as well, but i heard the noise of air escaping from the vehicle.after turning south on i-17, i exited on the first street, exit 199, jefferson st.i turned left and looked for a safe place to pull over.it isn't a good neighborhood, so i slowed down and continued to look around the vehicle as i tried to find the place where the air was escaping.finally, i cracked open the sliding door at the top of my sunroof, and i noticed shards of glass.i immediately closed it and was relieved it had not been open when this incident happened.i decided i must get home immediately, proceeded back to the freeway, and drove home.when i arrived, i noticed the sunroof was shattered - one main horizontal shatter at the center and two more vertical shatters at each end.i checked the interior of the vehicle for a projectile and found nothing.after researching further, it was clear that the glass had broken simply due to poor design.i immediately filed a claim with my insurance company, farmers.the claim number is 910380.i have also contacted toyota to get a response, but i have not heard back.i am fortunate that the sunroof was not exposed.there is a paper-thin sliding door that blocks the sun.even though the sun had set, i had left it closed, and it protected me from the shards of glass.this is clearly a defect that toyota needs to address.it is december in arizona, and the temperature was 69 degrees when i left to return home yesterday.it's not a heat issue.it's likely a glass defect.i look forward to obtaining more information.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal noise of mice in the dashboard. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the mice entered the vehicle through the rear undercarriage vent. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000.
The lower window on the rear hatch shattered without warning.
My brand new 2011 prius class five with alloy wheel, make a lot of noise coming from front left tire. Tire is brand new, try a tire rotate, wheel is still making noise at 5mph to 70. Take it to dealer they say it normal when i don't think it normal. Very staring for a brand new car to make these noise.
I was driving on the 101 n freeway at about 55 mph and i heard a loud popping noise.i had never had a tire blow before so i didn't even realize what was happening until i heard the flat tire.luckily it was my left rear tire so i was not injured and i was able to safely make my way across the freeway onto the right hand side of the freeway where i called aaa to come and change it to my spare.i called toyota, they said they had nothing to do with the tires and could not help me and i would have to make a complaint to yokohama, the tire company.i called the tire company, they told me to have it inspected and it was found that it was a road condition that led to the tire damage and therefore it was not under warranty.the exact same incident occurred again on 01/15/2013, this time i was going 65 mph on the 101 s freeway.my rear right tire blew out and i had to get across traffic where i got off the freeway and was able to call for help.my concern is not whether the tire company will be able to foot the cost, but the fact that my tires will blow out when i'm driving under or about the speed limit for a road condition that everyone else manages to drive on with no problems.i reported both incidents with toyota and yokohama.
On october 18,2012 i was driving my 2011 prius 2 on a 2 lane highway at 55 mph when the drivers side rear yokohama tire blew out on the sidewall. I swerved in to the left lane twice before leaving the road, snapping off a utility pole, going down a revine and rolling over end for end and side to side. I ended up in the middle of the back seat on my stomach facing the rear of the car. The drivers seat was broken back and my seatbelt wasstill on. I was in in the hospital for a month following back surgery. I had 3 cracked vertibre and one cracked rib as well as many bruises. Needless to say the car was totaled and i am still recovering 3.5 months later.
Was driving a 2011 prius with just under 25,000 miles on october 18, 2012 on a 2 lane highway. A rear tire sidewall blew out. There was a rollover end for end down a very steep and long ditch. There were severe back injuries.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that the vehicle did not have a traction control switch. Due to the switch not being in the vehicle, the vehicle stalled while driving up an incline during inclement weather. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the failure was inherent to the model. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.updated 05/06/16*lj
Affected models:2009-2010 corolla2009-2010 corolla matrix2008-2010 highlander2009-2010 tacoma2006-2008 rav42006-2010 yaris
When hitting the interstate massively lost power while trying to accelerate.all cluster of lights came on and stayed on dash including check hybrid system.plz contact as soon as possible
On november 4, during a routine maintenance appointment, it was discovered that our prius is completely invaded with mice, from where the wind sheild meets the dashboard, all the way through the entire car - between the visible interior and the metal frame - to the rear hatch door latch. We learned that toyota is well aware of this problem, due to how it is designed, which greatly allows for rodents to enter the car's cabin and trunk area via the heater box and cabin filter area. This is a particular health hazard....a significant one. To remedy the issue the service department had to literally strip the entire interior of the car down to the metal, from windshield to trunk latch. Every thing had to be taken out, several parts replaced (including the carpet which was damaged on the underside),or cleaned and reinstalled. This costs thousands of dollars and over a month of time.i have invoices and statements but do not know how to convey those to you, based on the instructions given.
I have a 2011 prius, and it failed toyota's oil consumption test twice, around 110,000 miles. It consumes oil way so quickly that i have to add oil 2-3 times between scheduled oil changes. Bob smith toyota (la crescenta, ca) performed the test per toyota's instructions and acknowledged the problem but did not take any measures to remedy the problem. There are hundreds of thousands of 2010-2012 toyota prius owners who purchased this vehicle on the premise of being a "eco friendly hybrid" toyota is clearly negligent and after having an attorney draft letter to toyota they still will not accept any responsbility.
Rear visibility seriously hampered because no camera installed in vehicle.toyota motor car company knows from experience the serious safety & financial consequences of not addressing a safety issue & a camera providing the driver rear visibility could dramatically save the life of person(child) at rear of vehicle.it is to be noted toyota installed camera in the prius only when navigation sys. Is purchased.
The following dashboard lights came on on our vehicle at the same time:traction mode, emergency brake, abs, and brake system warning light. Since the lights have came on, i have noticed that i have to press down further down on the brake to stop the vehicle. My stopping distance is further now as well.
Left car running the night before.didn't know it. Locked car that evening. Battery dead next day. Shouldn't there have been a warning when i locked car, that car was not off?
I noticed around 90,000 miles that my car began consuming oil at any accelerated rate, so i didn't think too much about it. Then i noticed that i my oil gauge was turning on every 1,000-1,200 miles, my car was completely out of oil. I went online to toyota prius forums and started doing more research and this is a common problem for 2010-2011 prius's. Bob smith toyota, in la crescenta, who sold me the car, ran an oil consumption study and concluded that there is a major issue and they contacted toyota did not want to acknowledge there is an problem for the sake that this could result in a class action lawsuit based on negligence.
Toyota after 2 months has not resolved this issue/recall. Since that i have to stop to share my car on turo and i'll have a lost of income.i'm asking for a compensation
Got hit on the front left side of veh. Not at fault and i believe the other party might have provided false papers. But the reason for the complaint is my airbags didnt deploy??? front bumper cover bumper and radi. Had damages. In my nonenexpert opinion enough to cause it to eeploy
I was driving on a highway in the country, go about the speed limit of 55 when i heard a very loud sound like an explosion or gunshot. I had the cover to the sunroof open and when i looked up i could see that the sunroof was shattered, crackled everywhere, but intact. When i pulled over to look at it from the outside, i could not see any debris from anything that would have hit it.. Instead it appears to bow from underneath and the sides have linear cracks all around.i was not close to another vehicle when it happened either, so i do not see that it could have been caused from anything externally. This could have caused me to be distracted to cause an accident or injury if the glass had entirely fallen through to the inside.
When i was about to exit while driving on freeway, myabs, brake, tcs light is suddenly on, the brake need power to push and regenerate charger not working when brake pedal push, and make mpg drop.
2011 toyota prius 3. ( most models 2010-2014) engineering design flaw allows mice to easily access inside of the vehicle through air system. When mice are present while driving this creates a driving distraction that can lead to an accident or death. Toyota corp refuses to acknowledge the problem, but the dealership does field complaints but will not act because toyota refuses to acknowledge the problem an order a bulletin . I have photos and solution to issue, however several others may be unaware of the issue a simple google search will result in additional findings. I myself am a victim of the design flaw and nearly resulted in a car accident. Without being dramatic- this is truly a issue that needs to be reviewed seriously. I cant provide more details if needed. I'm not looking to gain money, media attention or anything else other than there is truly an issue and i want others to be safe. Its heartbreaking to look in the rear view mirror to see a 15 month old baby screaming because a mouse is running across her body and another mouse is running across the back seat and then the floor board under your feet while trying to pull over with no road shoulder.
Horn stopped working. Only works when steering wheel is turned left or right.forums have posted that it could be the spiral cable from other vehicle owners. This replacement is over $1,000.
Although toyota issued a recall notice in october of 2018 for our 2011 prius, the affected part was not available and the letter stated we would be notified when the repair could be made.on feb. 5 our check hybrid system warning came on and the car was difficult to drive with diminished acceleration/power--certainly a safety issue in our area's heavy traffic.the auto nation toyota ft myers, fl dealership said the car should be driven in to the service dept. (but told my husband once it was there, it was no longer safe to operate) and it would be checked and then "graciously" said the inverter system would be replaced at no cost (approx. $3800) to us as toyota opted to "extend the warranty".this should have been replaced in october when initially notified and before it failed and became a safety issue and before we were told to "drive it to the dealership".i am very disappointed in toyota and i worry about other prius drivers still on the road.
Automobile continued to accelerate and even speed up with foot on the brakes. While stopped, waiting to turn, car would still accelerate, even speed up, into on-going traffic. This has been happening since i purchased the auto, but is now happening more frequently and for longer periods. Never reported because it only happened for a brief moment. However, in the last week this happened twice and i couldn't control the auto. Waiting for call back from dealer.
Takata recall my 16 year old daughter has this car with a major safety recall and no apparent fix!not happy and not feeling safe with her driving it now.it has stalled out once so far on a backroad.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While attempting to park the vehicle into a space at approximately 3 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated on its own. The vehicle traveled into a semi circle and struck a parked vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was turned off. The vehicle was driven to the dealer, but no diagnostic was performed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 19,000.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle accelerated even when the accelerator pedal was not depressed. The contact depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle still accelerated and sounded as if it were in neutral. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The failure recurred approximately twenty times. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 154,000.

We've been having a problem with the drcc (dynamic radar cruse control) on our 2011 prius.the drcc locks up (freezes) -locking onto a phantom vehicle ahead and activating the beeper/applying the brakes -' even when there is no vehicle is ahead! this creates a safety hazard as the car suddenly decelerates at interstate speeds with no warning to vehicles behind. We have had 7 occurrences of this problem. A search of the htsa database yields two similar reports (10448415 & 10421208).in all cases this has occurred on clear sunny days as the car was passing a semi tractor-trailer on an interstate highway when our car was passing the semi's cab. In most cases, there was no vehicle in front (car in constant speed mode) - it just suddenly acted like there was one! whenever this occurs, the car keeps braking and the only immediate solution is to turn disengage the cruse control. When the temperature is high (above 90 degrees) when we re-engage the drcc, the unit is still locked up! what cleared the locked up condition was turning off the car. On one occasion, when the ambient temperature had dropped below 90 degrees the drcc cleared itself. I have a log of all 7 occurrences of this problem.i have contacted toyota about this problem (case #s [xxx] & [xxx]) and they had me take the car to my local toyota dealer who used their techscan tool to download any system generated error codes - they found none. (of course, if the software design of the system does not recognize that malfunction has occurred, no error code will be generated.) the dealer also took the car out on a couple of (short) test drives, but the system performed normally.*note: a possible problem here is that, when hot, the radar unit is picking up signals from the truck's satellite position reporting system. There are several electronic manufacturing faults that could lead to this.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving at any speed, the contact stated that the vehicle would suddenly accelerate forward while pressure was being applied to the brakes. The dealer advised the contact to bring the vehicle in for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer took a complaint on the contacts behalf but provided no further assistance. The current mileage was 2,000 and the failure mileage was 900.
This is the second complaint for the same vehicle and the same complaint.the first occurred 11/11/2016. I was making a right hand turn into a parking spot in the same parking lot.as i turned into the spot and released my foot from the accelerator my car accelerated.this time i was able to stop the vehicle before striking another car or the handicapped ramp.
Making right turn into a parking spot and the car accelerated striking a parked car to my right and my car was stopped by a cement handicap ramp.there was extensive front end damage to my car, as well as the front passenger door.the car on my had the right front bumper removed and the wrought iron railing on the ramp severely dented.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph approaching a stop sign, the vehicle accelerated independently without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 5 and the current mileage was 15,000. Updated 8/11/14
Drove over a speed hump, and as the front tires hit the level pavement, the car lurched forward.responded to brakes just fine.happened again a week later as both front tires simultaneously went over an edge dropoff at a construction area.
2011 prius, usa equipment package five.20000 miles driven -- recommended service done every 5000, including the 20000 service done less than 1000 miles ago.eastbound on i-78, a few exits west of allentown pa. Speed limit 65, radar cruise set to 68 and default three-bars [max distance].all was good for 30 or so miles of rolling hills and light traffic.then, with no change in traffic density or average traffic speed, the prius started slowing down -- as would be quite appropriate if the driver ahead of me had eased up on the gas. 60, 55, 50, 45.not quickly -- no where near as quickly as if i were to turn off the cruise.it was as though there was traffic slowing down ahead and the radar was just responding to it.but the traffic ahead was not slowing down.no beeps, no brake assist -- the prius just gently slowed down -- in fact, the 'car ahead' icon was still displayed on the cruise indicator -- but in reality, the car ahead was far beyond where 'car ahead' should have been displayed. He was still doing 65 while i was down to 45.i was watching ahead and behind me -- still wondering if the radar had seen something i was missing -- and didn't really resume active control till cars behind started to get close [i really was concerned the prius saw something i didn't!].as the cars behind got closer, i just pushed down on the gas -- never de-activated the cruise -- and when back at 60 or so, the cruise again started to act 'normally'.there were no codes recorded, so i don't expect the dealer to even want to look at it.toyota has not responded on this issue so far [other than to send spam advertising email].
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly after the brakes and start button were depressed intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 28,600.
As a driver this was disconcerting as i could not clearly determine if the car was at all driveable.if a driver were to stop immediately in the same situation they would be on the roadway.if i had not pressed on the accelerator pedal after powering on the car again i would not have known i could move the car to a safer location.display should read "hybrid system failure" then "limited ev power available" then "move to safe area if necessary"cause: hybrid inverter failure.repaired by toyota under 2014 eoe and new 10/2018 recall j0a
When breaking and still moving, the car will accelerate momentarily resulting in going faster for a second or two.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving at 5 mph, a 90 degree left turn was made and the vehicle accelerated at high speed and jumped the curb. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 93,081.
Periodically, after going over a bump at fairly low speeds, the car will accelerate.in light of the other unintended acceleration issue reported under odi 10499911, i wonder if these two events are related -- possibly something to do with going from the motor to the battery?
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that while attempting to park at 3 mph, the vehicle accelerated independently and crashed into a parking bumper.

The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. The contact stated that in foggy or rainy weather conditions, condensation would build on each window, preventing the contact from seeing the roadway. The contact stated that the defroster would not clear the windows. She also tried opening the windows to allow the condensation to evaporate but to no avail. The dealer was contacted and advised that repairs could not be made because the failure was contributed to the design and manufacturing of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 30 and the current mileage was 31,059....update 01/20/12 updated 01/25/12
Starting on/about 12 october 2011, any point source of light (i.e., traffic signal, headlight, taillight) viewed through the front windshield creates an optical effect of multiple images, somewhat like viewing the light through a prism. The effect typically manifests as a quintuple image when the light is viewed from a distance -- two false images each above and below the actual light. As the light source is approached, the images converge on the center (actual) light source, going from five to three (one false above and below) to eventually nearly one image when at a stop line.this effect has been continuously occurring since october 2011, and it occurs with all sources of light. Red and yellow colors are the most visible/pronounced, but it is also seen with green or other colors of light. Although the vehicle is drivable, the prismatic effect is very distracting, especially in an urban/suburban environment where there are many traffic signals and other vehicles in the area.
Both headlights suddenly went out at night during a rain storm on interstate 10.when this happened. Definitely a safety issue!!
The headlights keep burning out, i have replaced the drivers side 3 times in 12 months and the passenger side twice. I only use sylvania brand, but have switched to different brightness to see if it has any impact, it has a slight impact but not much. The headlights are not on when not needed.
Power window switch fails to close window when lifted up into the full auto-up mode.the window goes to the top of the door and then rebounds to approximately 1/2 way down. Driver is required to put window up by only lifting slightly on the switch to manually stop it.
I was driving on interstate 20 with my wife when the sunroof exploded.there are two panes of glass and the exterior pane sent shards of glass out onto the highway.the internal pane of glass stayed in place but some shards of glass fell on my wife and myself.the toyota dealer says this was due to a crack from debris which hit the car and compromised the integrity of the sunroof.they could not prove or show any mark indicating this as a fact.it was a very scary situation and i feel our sunroof was materially flawed and toyota should be responsible for the problem.
2011 toyota prius. Consumer writes in regards to recall notice for curtain shield air bag inflators.*asthe consumer was advised the aftermaket moon roof disrupted the effectiveness of the airbag.
The contact owns a 2011 toyota prius. While driving on the highway, the contact heard a loud sound. He noticed that the sun roof exploded and the glass shattered. There were no injuries. Dch toyota of torrance (2909 ca-1, torrance, ca 90505, (424) 271-2340) informed the contact to bring in the vehicle. The dealer acknowledged that the same failure occurred with other vehicles. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 84,360.
Was driving a 2011 prius with just under 25,000 miles on october 18, 2012 on a 2 lane highway. A rear tire sidewall blew out. There was a rollover end for end down a very steep and long ditch. There were severe back injuries.
