My driver's side airbag failed to deploy.i hit my chest on the steering wheel.i was in a car accident on september 30, 2015 at 10:00 am on highway 95, the speed limit was 65.a man hydroplaned in front of me, i had to be going at least 40......updated 10/19/15 .....updated 12/29/15

Another driver pulled out in front of me on a city street on03/23/17 and i hit the side of his car with the front of my suv. I was going about 35-40 mphthe force from his car then knocked me head on into a light pole. I was knocked unconscious at the initial hit. My suv was totaled and the front frame was bent from the impact into the pole. The air bag never came out at all. The rescue men all remarked about it because the accident was so forceful. I had a concussion & had to retire from my job & continue to have memory issues. I called toyota about a week after the accident when i felt a little better so they could look into it. By the time they got with the place where the car had been towed, the suv had been sold for scrap ( i guess) so they said they could not get the data box.

We were involved in a car accident on 04/29/2021 and the front airbags that are suppose to come out the wheel and dashboard didn't deploy just the rear airbags. Toyota told me the impact wasn't hard enough for them to deploy but as you will see from the pictures attached the whole front end of the car is gone. Please see attached police report and photos for more details.

Vehicle was in motion on a city straight going through a green light when a vehicle traveling the opposite direction attempted to make left-hand turn and struck the front of the toyota highlander 2015. Both cars were in motion when the collision occurred. When the toyota highlander 2015 was brought to the body shop to be repaired the appraiser indicated that the air bags should have deployed and they needed to be investigated for defects.

The power liftgate closed on my head when i was putting stuff in the trunk. It was open like normal, but then it suddenly dropped without warning. Before this happened it was having problems closing completely. It is still having these problems. I took it into the dealership to get fixed and they "reset" the system but that didnt fix anything. It is still not closing completely sometimes. It will seemingly open fine (although im afraid it will fall on my head) but when i have to close it will sometimes close and it will sometimes close almost all the way and then it will beep twice and open a bit again and sit there. I will have to hit it to open and close again and hope that it works. Sometimes i get it in 2 tries and sometimes it takes 4 or 5 times to get it to close.

While driving, the radio and mapping system will suddenly stop working.there then is no way to reset the map and/or radio, other than to stop the vehicle, turn it off and then restart it.sometimes, it takes more than one restart to have the system back to running normal.this happens when the vehicle is in motion and on various types of roadways or highways.it has happened on various dates, but the most recent occurrence was on aug. 10, 2019.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. A police officer helped the contact coast the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle restarted after it was coasted to the side of the road and driven to the contact's residence. The contact took the vehicle to darcars toyota frederick (5293 buckeystown pike, frederick, md 21704, (301) 696-6300), but the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 7,000.

This vehicle has a really bad electrical issue with the steering wheel,it feels like it wonders from time to time.then the motor will stall out almost completely while driving down the road. Taken to dealer to only have them not replicate the same problems as when we have it. I know it's not me because my spouse has discussed it with me too. I see there's recalls for similar problems within the same production on this vehicle but somehow it didn't get any notifications but clearly it describes the same problems.

When the car had 20k miles the brakes would shake when going down hill, took it in but they found nothing wrong. I have since had the rotars turned brakes replaced and when braking the brakes shake really bad its scary. I have also had too many electrical problems with the door locks one goes out then next week another, the outlets have never worked and now the stereo is going to be replaced because it blacks out and restarts constantly.

The door lock actuator failed on the drivers door. Within two months all of the actuator door locks failed on all of the doors.the cost to repair is very expensive for a fix and from what i have been reading they may fail again. This should have been recalled since there were many other people with the same complaint.

Our 2015 highlander steering intermittently locks up and has a complete loss of power. First happened when starting the vehicle and had to sit and start and stop over 15 times and the steering finally came back. We immediately contacted toyota and they said this vehicle had no recalled parts and there is no problem. When it happened the second time we took it in and they said it had a bad battery and the problem was fixed. We paid a hefty service fee and paid for a really expensive battery. Two days later it happened again and while moving on a city street about 35/40 mph. We got over safely but was so dangerous. Took it back to toyota and they are telling us the vehicle has no problem and we just need to use it till it happens again and bring it back! if we don't kill ourselves or another motorist! after doing our own research we find our car is doing exactly what the vehicles with the recall are doing but they will not replace the eps system and toyota is putting us back on the road in a dangerous vehicle. So now we only have one vehicle and struggling to get by. I find it completely unacceptable that toyota customer relations was of no help and rude on the phone. Now we have bought a $40,000.00 car we can not drive and be safe on the road with. How can they not help us and fix the problem? we will have to get a second opinion and end up paying more money to fix the problem. Thanks toyota we will not buy another.

In 2016, 1 year after i purchased the car, the door locks started to intermittently stop opening and locking with the key, and internal and external lock buttons. This is a safety hazard to children in the back seat, as parents cannot control the locks.additionally, it's a safety issue to all passengers, as passengers cannot enter or exit the car easily and/or quickly as the locks don't consistently respond when using the internal or external button electronic key.

Driver's heated seat began heating to a high level while control was in 'off' position.driver's lumbar support pressure began increasing on its own without use of the pressure control button.

The door locks have stopped working one by one. First i noticed the driver door not unlocking or locking with the key fob, with the touch system on the door handle, or with the button on the inside panel. Then i noticed my back door on the driver side not locking or unlocking with the key fob or with the button on the inside panel. Both of these locks are now manual only. And the front passenger door lock only works sometimes, so i imagine it will stop working altogether soon as well. This puts the safety of my belongings, myself, and my children at risk. I don't know how long this had been happening before i noticed it, so i very easily could have been unknowingly leaving my car unlocked all over town. I am unable to enter my car quickly because i have to take the key fob apart and use the manual key to enter the driver door, and then my son has to wait for me to manually unlock his door before he can get in. My daughter sits on the other side so he can't just switch to the side that works. Well he could but then my daughter would have the same issue. If it was an emergency situation and we had to get into the car quickly it's just not possible. Also in traffic or in parking lots when we are inside the car i feel like we are left vulnerable with the doors unlocked and i can't lock them without reaching and manually doing this for each door. Which i do, but shouldn't have to. A quick internet search has made it clear that i am far from the first person this has happened to with these vehicles. It is clearly an extremely common issue with highlanders and other toyota vehicles and it 100% should be a recall.

Driver-side door does not lock/unlock when using the key fob, door handle, or the switch inside the vehicle.issue was sporadic at first but now occurs almost every time we (try to) lock/unlock the doors.i believe the issue to be the door lock actuator, which i intend on replacing.

The front main console of the gps, radio, and entire radio head will suddenly gets frozen and/ requiring reboot. The voice activation/recognition has hard time recognizing voice, commands, and 90% of the time it is a useless device, which drivers must use the phone manually instead. This is a safety concern for a driver since we are relying on the modern devices. A consumer like me is expecting >$36,000 to have hands free and efficient voice recognition as part of safety features .

Soon after warranty ran out the lift gate to the trunk hatch began leaking lubrication and intermittanly would not open all the way, close all the way,or open or close at all. Many times, i would need to manually push the hatch down to close, which required extreme force. The same force would be required to open the hatch at times.esentially, the lift gate is unreliable to lift or close most of the time.the cost estimate from the dealer exceeded $1,800 for the replacement of both struts.

The screen freezes and restart for no apparent reason. The situation is happening with my vehicle is in motion or stationary.

I parked my car in the garage and several hours later i happened to need something out there. When i entered i heard an electric motor running even though the car had been turned off for several hours. Crawling under the car i found that the sound was comming from a motor near the rear axle.i reported it to my toyota dealerand they advised that it was a motor that may run hours after the car is turned off to purge the carbon canister. They advised that they found that information in their service manual, but not the owners manual.one time our lawn mower decided to leak during the night resulting in heavy gasoline fumes in the garage.my concern is that if something like that should happen again i do not think any electric motor on the car should be able to unilaterally decide when to run after the car is turned off.

I was driving 80 mph on the interstate when the engine light came on and a "check awd" display appeared. At that same moment i lost the ability to steer and to accelerate. I managed to get the car off of the interstate. The car came to a stop. I did not see any smoke, or smell anything and the engine temp gauge showed mid cool so i decided to start the car again. When i tried to start the car, the engine light and the "check awd" display came on again, and then seconds later a temperature light came on with a loud alarm. Smoke started coming out of the front left hood. I shouted for my daughter and her friend to get out of the vehicle. I grabbed my phone and ran to her door to help her and her friend get out. By the time we were running away, flames were coming out of the hood. Within minutes my car was completely engulfed in flames.

Hello,i would like to get nhtsa's help because toyota won't provide any remedy for this problem.on 4/17/2015, i bought a toyota 2015 highlander le plus from toyota north brunswick (nj) and noticedbuzzing sound after driving only ~30 minutes. Buzzing sound comes from dashboard area constantly, ~once every minute (in the beginning of driving) to ~every second (after driving an hour). The noise is from the air blend servo (related to ac) as acknowledged by local toyota service dpt, but toyota keeps saying that the noise is normal no matter how often it happens because the regional toyota field technical specialist (fts) [xxx]said so, i.e. Toyota can't help you. (note: he hasn't even checked my vehicle in person.) i think the noise itself can happen from time to time, but the problem is frequency, just like sneezing every second is not normal even though sneezing itself is normal to human.a toyota technician told me the other day that replacing air blend servo is pretty expensive because the whole dashboard needs to be taken apart. I suspect toyota won't fix this under its warranty unless this problem becomes life threatening, i.e. Too expensive for toyota. My family and friends ask "how can you drive with this crazy noise?". The noise is almost like sleeping w/ 100 gnats in the same room. I am a drive with over 20 years' experience and have always used new vehicles, but never experienced this kind of problem with new vehicles from other manufacturers.please help me with this problem.thank you.p.s. I also found more people with same problem and frustration:http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/333-3rd-generation-2014/1077937-weird-vibrating-buzzing-noise.html.

Door lock actuator has been replaced 3 times within 12 months on the vehicle, twice on the same door.the internet has many complaints about this defect. The failure rate is far too high for this actuator.this is a safety issue because, due to the design of the highlander, if you exit the vehicle with the engine running the 3 passenger doors do not respond to the key fob or the exterior manual unlocking mechanism. If the driver door actuator fails during this scenario you are effectively barred from the vehicle with the engine running.

After driving a short period of time the nav unit will reset itself, short or long trips may result in multiple occuranceses

Light on cruise control lever on steering column flickers off and on if vehicle is in motion and steering column is in use. Alternator in car already required replacement at 73,000. Dealership was advised of issue and i was told there was nothing wrong with the lever.

The navigation system shuts down and reboots. The front usb plug works inconsistently. The door locks work inconsistently. I took it to toyota in slidell, la and they charged me $600 and said it was my battery.my car is still doing the above and i am very disappointed in toyota. :-(

Brakes lights to do not always light up.took to automotive mechanic and they could not duplicate problem.my wife drives car home and i can see that left side brake light work but right side (passenger) does not light up.turn signals are ok.brakes light work sometimes.not bulb problem.

Door actuators on both rear passenger doors have stopped working. Door locks do not respond to power door lock switch nor the key fobs.

Takata recall-this past sunday my car had been parked in the drive way for a few days and when i went to drive my car and there was a strange noise under the hood, i backed out of the drive way and when the car shifted from first to second it jurked and was not smooth so i parked the car. I looked under the hood and there were mouse dropping on the engine. I called toyota on monday morning and they said to have it towed so i did monday night. Today wednesday they called and said there were a lot of wire damage and something else but they still not able to find the problem.they said at this point it was going to be $500 maybe more.and not under manufacturers defect warranty. Which i think if they are going to put something in the wire casing that rodents love then they should correct any problems as a results of the product used at no cost to the customer.my car is a $45,000 car and i have only had it a few months.this is bull.

The monitor resets/ reboots at least one time every time you in motion with the vehicle.meaning that the gps, bluetooth and music all stops and restarts.i've paid to have the monitor replaced but it still did not stop the issue.there are many complaints on line about this happening.i contacted toyota and they are not acknowledging that it is an issue and the dealerships don't know how to fix it which i believe makes is a larger electrical issue.

Rear boot lidnot operational.tried using.my keys and also the dash button but the gate wont open or close. Had to open fron the window to load my shopping. On my way on free way, the door opened and lost a bit of my bottled stuff and shopping as it tossed away. So lucky to be on a line with limited traffic. Had no accident

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the rear door failed to properly open and close. The contact had to apply force or the door would remain open. The vehilce was taken to the dealer (furiel toyota ponce, industrial san rafael, 00731, calle navarra, ponce, puerto rico, 1-787-284-2020) for diagnostic testing. The dealer indicated that the warranty expired on november 1, 2017. In addition, the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v144000 (electrical system). The failure was reported to the manufacturer. The approximate failure mileage was 17,400. Parts distribution disconnect.

The car's electrical navigation system will go haywire then reboot itself while driving. You can not do anything with the screen while it is going haywire.i have a video but could not upload it.this happens a lot.

For two years now, my vehicle will randomly have an engine stall while operating the vehicle.it happens at different speeds and while going straight ahead or turning.the entire instrument panel and navigation screens shuts off and turns back on.i have taken the car in to toyota twice and was told they couldn't find anything wrong or get the the vehicle to malfunction again.today, the engine didn't immediately come back on after stalling, and i had to pull over and turn the car off and back on again.my car has less than 33000 miles on it and has had regular maintenance.this is truly a safety concern at this point and it seems i'm not the only one with this issue according to those reported to the nhtsa.

Two or three times now, while paused in traffic, i look at the radio instrument panel and it has completely shut off and reboots, it then causes all previously programmed information in the system to be changed.in addition at the same time, the steering feels like it "pauses".i checked my vin it is not in the recall but i will be taking it to the dealer as soon as possible.once the electrical radio/entertainment system rebooted while traveling on the highway, i only noticed it because the radio shut off.i did not notice anything at that time with the steering and i thought it was a fluke, but now after three times, i am bringing to the dealer

In december of 2018 i started having problems with my doors, got it checked at toyota,3 door actuators had gone bad ,toyota said it was not a recall, checked toyota bulletin numerous owners were having this problem, toyota was not going to fix problem cost 3 hundred plus for each actuator plus labor, had to buy onamazon and fix myself.

While the vehicle was being driven, the power cut out and a message appeared on the dash stating that the brake and accelerator were being depressed simultaneously -- but they were not.this happened three times in a row. We had the vehicle toward to the toyota dealer where purchased.they could not figure out what was wrong and attributed the problem to "driver error."the dealer's mechanic produced a report indicating that similar malfunctions had occurred in the prior two months with no notice to the driver.toyota could provide no explanation for this.toyota claims that nothing is wrong and refuses to repair or replace the vehicle.

Vehicle's radio, maps, entunes, will freeze. As well as the navigation system. It will then reset itself after a few minutes of being frozen and unable to use any features. This occurs several times a day while driving. This has occurred many times a week over the last several months.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled and all the warning indicators illuminated. The contact removed the key from the ignition switch and restarted the vehicle. The vehicle worked normally. The vehicle was taken to hartford toyota superstore in hartford, connecticut for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer sent an evaluator to diagnose the vehicle. According to the report, the vehicle was working to manufacturer standards. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 16001120892. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 91,000.

The locking mechanism for the rear gate remains in the locked position which keeps the hatch unable to engage allowing the gate to fly open when driving. This causes a danger to pets and material stored in the rear of the 2015 highlander on a city street while moving in a straght line..

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the rear power hatchback door made an abnormal noise when being opened. In addition, the door only opened halfway. The vehicle was taken to nalley toyota of roswell(11130 alpharetta hwy, roswell, ga 30076, (404) 994-5422) where the contact was informed that the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 30,800.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the trunk release button and/or key failed to open the trunk. The vehicle was taken to northridge toyota (9550 nordhoff st, northridge, ca 91324, (818) 734-5600). The dealer stated that the vehicle was not covered under warranty. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 30,000. The vin was not available.

Touch screens audio system is not working for the pass two years

Driving forward into parking space.just about stopped.pressed break.car lurched forward at hight speed suddenly, causing car to jump curb at top of parking spot and careen down hill (onto side walk).car out of control for about 2 seconds.was able to break in hill, which prevented me from hitting car parked perpendicular on street below.bottom of car scraped curb when car jump curb and lurched forward.bottom front bumper scraped.there was an icy patch at top of parking space.it seems like when wheels rolled on top of icy patch, the car lurched forward.car might have accidentally been on cruise control at the time.

Vehicle is burning excessive amounts of oil.

When driving my highlander the following error messages appeared, error keeping the start button pressed will cause an emergency stop. I dismissed this. Then it popped up a message that car cannot drive while brake and accelerator are pressed simultaneously.i lost ability to accelerate so tried to pull of busy road, pressing the brake pedal restored acceleration.then when i stopped in traffic or at lights the car shut itself down and had to be restarted.these error messages kept coming on while i drove to the dealer.i switched off the car at the shop and it wouldnt repeat the problem, no codes have been recorded by the vehicles computer because the check engine light never came on.toyota and the dealership want to wait until it happens again. Since it happened before, also while it was driving i am uncomfortable as it is a safety concern.i don't want it to happen on a busy highway. I believe the intelligent power module of the car is shorting out and causing the car to go into failsafe mode and shut down creating hazardous driving conditions.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle loss motive power and failed to accelerate as needed. The contact indicated that the vehicle failed to accelerate above 10 mph. The vehicle was taken to toyota of braintree located at 210 union st, braintree, ma 02184, and diagnosed with a defective engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. The vin was not available.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While driving approximately 40 mph, the subframe fractured due to the rear bolts on the frame being too tight. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the rear bolts were not properly installed from the factory associated with the torque. The dealer inspected the subframe and stated that it did not need to be replaced. The dealer replaced the rear hybrid drive motor, rear differential, the entire exhaust system from the motor to the muffler, and the driver side suspension control arm. The contact stated that the subframe needed to be further inspected and replaced. The contact also waited longer than two weeks for the parts to receive the repairs due to the failure. The vehicle was repaired and the contact took the vehicle to another dealer who inspected the frame. The second dealer, a manufacturer's technician, further inspected the vehicle and stated that the subframe was cracked. The technician stated that the contact had the option of receiving a repair of the frame being welded or various parts would need to be removed to replace the subframe, which was an extensive repair. The contact was uncertain of the best course of action to permanently repair the condition. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 11,562. Updated 06/14/16*lj

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While driving approximately 40 mph, an abnormal odor emitted inside the vehicle. The driver and passenger sustained headaches and sore throats. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician stated that an undercoating was applied to the catalytic converter during production that emitted a chemical odor inside the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 5.updated 08/30/16*lj

The audio and gps system will reset it self while driving!!!!it happens all the time. No support from the dealers....

Rear brake lights (left & right) show heavy condensation that could potentially result in lights wearing out early or cloud vision of motorists driving behind me. There is probably a potential seal issue or leakage in the light assembly that leads to this. Showed it to dealer and got a quote of ~$900 to repair/replace. Also, the liftgate seal might be broken or leaking as notice dampness or small water accumulation in trunk after rain.

Condensation and liquid/water in rear exterior lights.lights or seals warp with contact to heat manufacturers defects

Rear brake light seals failing allowing water into left and right brake light housings.when i asked dealer about replacement they said that they are not covered under safety warranty.

In 2017 i had my passenger side rear inner light assembly replaced due to condensation and now 2019 i am having to replace the drivers side inner light assembly due to condensation to the cost of $235.toyota bodywork should hold up better than that. This vehicle has never been wrecked.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed that the rear side markers and headlights retained water. In addition, when parking and releasing the brake pedal, a loud unknown noise occurred from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to northridge toyota (located at 19550 nordhoff st, northridge, ca 91324, (833) 650-5833) where it was diagnosed that there was moisture in the headlights. The dealer recommended replacing the headlights due to faulty seals. The failure was not covered by a warranty and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 45,665.

2015 toyota highlander limited--3 or 4 ounces of water has accumulated in both of mytail lights (that control brake lights and backup lights) that are located in the hatch of my tail gate. This causes a great deal of condensation to cloud rear brake and backup lights. When the tail gate is lifted the 3 or 4 ounces of water that has accumulated comes close to overflowing into tail light bulb areas which i am afraid will soon disable those lights and fail to warn others that the vehicle is braking or stopped which could lead to a vehicle crash.vehicle has never been an accident that could cause the damage.local toyota dealership noticed condensation in right rear tail light on 22 march 2018 and recommended replacing tail light at a cost of $330. They did not notice a problem in right tail light.in the past two weeks i have noticed water accumulation and condensation in left tail light.first time i noticed the problem in left tail light, the right tail light was fine.after the next rainstorm 3 to 4 ounces of water has accumulated in both tail lights--the water and condensation still remain.i have attached the following photos;--condensation in both tail lights (pictures 8598 and 0928)--3 to 4 ounces of water accumulation inside both tail lights--pictures (2140 and 7546) show water in outer lower corners of tail lights when the lift gate is raised.

Vehicle stalled while driving in traffic, with more then 1/2 full on fuel.vehicle would not start again until fuel assembly replaced.

I have been experiencing a situation with my 2015 toyota highlander (vin# 5tdjkrfhxfs1[xxx]) that has become quite concerning.when i step on the gas pedal from a dead stop position, i have experienced an initial acceleration and then a hesitation followed immediately by a resumption of acceleration.this has happened at least seven times.at first i thought my foot was slipping off the accelerator pedal.after examination i realized this was not possible.the last time it happened (april 16, 2018) i was attempting to proceed from a stop light across 3 lanes of highway to the fourth lane.as i stepped on the gas the car accelerated forward and then hesitated.i purposely left my foot right where it was on the gas pedal and within one or two seconds it resumed and again accelerated forward.when this happens there is no sputtering or backfiring, just a total void of anything happening until it again resumes forward motion.i just had the car serviced on april 25, 2018 at my toyota dealer and mentioned the problem.they drove the vehicle and could not reproduce the problem.they also ran a diagnosis of the system and found no abnormalities.my question is, has this been reported by others as a possible problem with this make of vehicle or is this a one off and others are not experiencing or not aware of this quirk in the system.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*pm

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While attempting to open the rear driver's door to remove his daughter from the car seat, the contact stated that the door would not open. The contact had to go around and open the rear passenger door in order to get the infant out of the seat. Additionally, during the second week of february of 2018, the front driver's side dooractuator had to be replaced because it did not open. At the end of february, the front passenger door actuator had to be replaced. The contact stated that this would be the third door that experienced actuator failure. The dealer (lugoff toyota in lugoff, north carolina) diagnosed the vehicle with door lock actuator failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The vehicle was repaired by the owner the first two times. The vehicle had not been repaired a third time. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the front driverā€™s and passengerā€™s side doors failed to unlock while using the keys. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the door lock actuator needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

When trying to merge with traffic at an onramp, the vehicle will frequently refuse to downshift to match traffic speed when doing 35-50mph. This has resulted in several close calls under these circumstances and i never know when this will happen. This forces a manual downshift that cannot always be in time. This same problem has been reported on numerous forums and some have reported having to "trick" the transmission into downshifting

The transmission has a flutter when trying to shift up or down to different gears.it causes a hesitancy in the performance of the vehicle. It has been documented by the caldwell toyota dealership in conway, ar usa and i have also been told that it is in other highlanders.i request a recall to have this fixed. Thank you

In the freeway running 65 mph , car start juggling and vibration , so i slow down to 60 mph and proceed going home , happened last night 9 pm

The seat belt coiled around my 8 year old son's neck and the seat belt lock would not disengage. We tried gently rocking the seat belts but it there was no give in it. Moving it harder would have choked my son. We had to cut the seat belt to release my son. This happened after a 10 min ride coming back from the school. He was seated in the rear right side seat. He wanted to get out of the car when we reached home. Since he is eight years now, he engages and disengages the seat belt himself. Please look at the picture.

Front driver seat is broken , frame is coming through the upper right side of the seat in the front of the seat sticks into my back

Car going in for the second time to replace the electrical seat adjustment panel and the other components needed to keep it held in place.the plastic clips on the parts just do not appear to be sufficient to keep the panel in place. Car has just under 33k miles.the panel is rarely used and it appears that just the entry and exit from the vehicle appears to be causing enough movement for the parts to wear out.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact stated while approaching a parking spot, when the vehicle accelerated independently and ran over a parking sign. The contact stated she was depressing on the brake pedal but failed to stop the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle to her destination. No police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to local dealer downeast toyota (652 wilson st, brewer, me 04412: (866) 620-9023) and were it's still being serviced. The vehicle had not been diagnosed orrepaired as of yet. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

Back stop light get rain water! passenger side front break always wearing out before others breaks ! trunk door automatic broken! 3 row sit under need get rushed!seat belt mounted on the floor if you put mats pull you back all time ! ac went u turn on not working right away take 5-10 min to cool down !

Popping sound coming fromright front side when breaking to a stop at all speeds. The problem was first noticed at around 2500 miles and the car was taken to the dealer at around 2900 miles. Dealer inspected it and couldn't find what the problem was. Then as instructed by toyota replaced the right front strut assembly but that didn't fix the problem. The car was returned to me and i was told there were no safety concerns and that toyota was sending one of their techs to troubleshoot, but that may take a couple of weeks. In the mean time the problem seems to be getting worse.

The following error message appears:ā€œboth accelerator and brake pads are depressedā€¯. This is not actually being done.the vehicle will then brake suddenly on its own, and the driver must accelerate then brake quickly to disengage the automatic brake.this creates a highly dangerous traffic situation. It has occurred at high speeds on the expressway and makes merging into traffic especially risky.vehicle has been inspected on 4 occasions by toyota dealerships and they have failed to diagnose or repair the problem, simply stating that the problem "needs to go to corporate" and taking no further action. Issue has been reported to toyota nat'l service center and am now awaiting resolution with the regional service engineer.

Clunking noise from rear end of vehicle when braking, dealer was authorized to change rear away bars and shocks, no fix, now toyota corp., says this is normal characteristic of vehicle ? i don't feel safe driving vehicle with noise, and as brakes feel soft also.

We were driving during heavy rains at freeway speeds. Traffic was slowed ahead.the system signals an alarm that traffic ahead is slowing, a very nice feature.however, while the alarm was going off, i depressed the brake pedal with zero response, likely due to the abs not wanting me to slide on the wet roads.however as i got closer and closer to the slowed traffic ahead, i needed to press the brake harder and harder.the brakes simply stopped decelerating the highlander and we smashed into the back of a smaller vehicle.while i appreciate abs and the desire to prevent sliding, i must be able to stop my vehicle.i have read countless complaints about this occurring, yet i do not see a resolution.

On 10/30/16 i took my 2015 highlander to a local toyota dealer for warped rotors. They agreed the rotors were warped and since it was at 35,000 miles they replaced all 4 rotors under warranty plus 2 new brake pads which i had to pay for. I noticed the same issue in late may of 2017 and called to ask about this. They said "we don't warranty warranty work" and suggested i called toyota headquarters. On june 21, 2017 i called toyota and filed a complaint. I was told to take the car to a different local dealer, closer to my home, and they would inspect the rotors for a charge. On july 11, 2017 i did this and the service rep told me she noticed that the rotors were "blue" and she noted that they should be changed. The service manager called toyota headquarters with this info but they refused to cover this, stating that this was normal wear and tear.later that day i heard from the toyota hq rep who repeated that toyota could not cover this. On 8/7/2017 i filed a complaint with vermont attorney general's office.as of 10/10/17 this complaint is still not resolved as they won't cover the repair. The car is now at 63,000.this is a safety issue. Note: according to toyota nation website many others have had these same issues.below is the response from the dealer on august 24, 2017. I discussed this situation with our assistant service manager. She didcontact toyota to ask them to cover this repair and they declined. Theirreasoning for this is that the condition of the brake rotors,i.e. They areblue, indicates a heat event. This usually results from heavy braking, braking while going downhill often or sometimes if the brakes got hot andthen went through cool water. If you would like to address this with toyotafurther, i encourage you to reach out to the toyota customer experiencecenter at 800-331-4331 or via email using this form. . .

Had a problem with a 13 mo. Old highlander(still under warranty).was backing into my garage when the brake pedal suddenly broke(rubber piece fell off).it caused my foot to slip off the brake and consequently backed into a refrigerator we had in the garage.it ruined the refrigerator and damaged the back of the highlander($1000+) worth of damage.filed a claim with toyota(corporate) and cooperated fully with their investigation.after 4mos. Of getting nothing but a run around from toyota finally got their answer to the problem.they said the vehicle was fine(why then did the brake pedal fall apart?) and that they didn't care at all about my problem.they also didn't answer why the brake pedal fell apart if 'all was fine' as they asserted.kind of like what toyota did 6 or 7 years ago when the accelerator problem first showed up.back then their first reaction was to blame th victims(owners) for causing the problem!!i suggest to others to not buy a toyota. As my problem shows, if an unusual problem happens they will not stand behind their vehicle or design!!

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While driving at 5 mph, the brakes failed without warning. As a result, the contact crashed into the rear end of another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was not filed. There were unknown injuries sustained that required medical attention. The vehicle was taken to be diagnosed, but the dealer could not duplicate the failure. The failure mileage was 10,500. The vin was unavailable.

The contact owned a 2015 toyota highlander. While driving approximately 50 mph on a winding road, the steering wheel locked up and prevented the contact from maintaining control. As a result, the vehicle drove into a ditch and flipped over. The air bags deployed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed. A police report was filed. The contact received injuries to the face and leg. Medical attention was not needed. The dealer stated that the vehicle was included in and repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 15v144000 (steering). The contact stated that they were never informed of the recall or the repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 15,425.

An intermittent squeaking noise occurs when turning the steering wheel left or right.i have noticed this when driving on a highway as well as on local roads

Light on cruise control lever on steering column flickers off and on if vehicle is in motion and steering column is in use. Alternator in car already required replacement at 73,000. Dealership was advised of issue and i was told there was nothing wrong with the lever.

When accelerating from a stop and especially when turning, say at a stop sign, one looses control of steering.the car is also difficult to steer when going into passing gear.i fear that losing control is a major safety problem.my toyota dealership will not do anything about this problem.this happens repeatedly, even though i drive conservatively and has since i bought the car in december 2014.

It is hard to turn wheel on low speed. Both directions

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v144000(steering) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

I received my recall letter for the eps ecu unit 5/13. Inspection would take 1.5 hours, replacement 2.5 hours or longer depending on the dealer's work schedule. The first available appt at the dealership was 5/20.on 5/20 i drove to the dealership for a morning appointment and it was confirmed that my vehicle had the problem.i was told they had to order the part, would keep my vehicle and they would provide a loaner. I called the dealership on 5/27 for an update.was told the part did not arrive but it was expected the next day. They would call with an update on 5/28.no call from the dealership on 5/28 so i called the toyota customer experience center (cec) and was given a case number.on 6/1, i called the dealership and was told the part still had not arrived but had been shipped.i called my cec rep and complained about the delay.i was informed that the repair parts have been on back order since last month and they are scheduled to begin arriving sometime during the month of june.i asked for an explanation of the information disconnect between the letter, toyota corporate and the dealership on the part availability for this recall .i also asked what toyota's definition of a reasonable amount of time was for addressing this recall and my rep was unable to provide an answer suggesting that the time varied by state. Day 13 has passed and neither my dealership nor toyota seem have a clue when this will be resolved. In addition, both the dealership and toyota were informed during our inital conversations that i have a cross-country relocation scheduled for 6/8.my rep said she would call me on june 4 to see how things are progressing.we were led to believe in the recall letter this was less than a one day project when indeed there is and has been a serious supply chain problem.honesty from toyota on day one would have been nice.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While the contact's son was driving at an unknown speed, the steering warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel seized.the contact stated that the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as listed in nhtsa campaign number: 15v144000 (steering). The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to have it diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 43,000. The vin was not available.

I took my 2015 toyota highlander to fred anderson toyota in raleigh for a recall on the ciruit board for the electric power steering.they found that my car contained the defecctive part and were unable to provide me an eta on the replacement part.the dealershiip provided a camry rental car, not a comparable vehicle.the entire reason i purchased the highlander was becuase my family need a large suv.i traded in a car for an suv and have received a car back from them.i have leftmessages for the rental car manager and he has not returned my calls.the service department indicates thatt several highlanders have been waiting for this part for over a month now, which is unacceptable.it could be over a month before i get my brand new vehicle back (no one can tell me), and i'm stuck with a vehicle that does not meet my families daily needs. I called toyota corporate and they have offered no further assistance.

This vehicle has severe torque steer when accelerating at highway speed. The vehicle pulls hard left and you have to fight the wheel to maintain control. It is very dangerous , especially when trying to pass another vehicle. My complaints to the dealership were waved aside - one tech told me "all our front wheel drive cars do it"

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While driving approximately 40-45 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle drifted safely off of the roadway. The ignition was cycled off and on; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, with the ignition in the off position, the contact was able to manually turn the steering wheel in either direction. With the ignition in the on position, the steering wheel remained seized in one position. The vehicle was towed to gale toyota (located at 50 palomba dr, enfield, ct 06082, (860) 741-3761) to be diagnosed, but the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code or duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v144000 (steering). The manufacturer wascontacted on april 24. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000. The vin was not available.

A safety recall on a possible defective circuit board for the electric power steering, i was told that there is no parts available to replace the defective parts and they don't even know when is the parts will be available.

While driving on a city street, the steering became extremely difficult as if power steering shut down."eps failure, steering wheel harder to turn" warning appeared on the dash cluster.we pulled over, turned off the vehicle, then turned it back on -- the warning disappeared and steering was normal again.our highlander was manufactured in 3/15.my vin was not in the recall for nhtsa campaign number: 15v144000.toyota replaced the steering computer under warranty, at no charge.i'm writing to suggest the extent of condition needs to be expanded to include additional vehicles.

Received recall notice. Scheduled service on vehicle for saturday the 22nd of september 2015, 0930. Documentation indicated the recall would take a total of approximately 4 hours to complete. Recall was for eps ecu, urgent safety recall. At about 1445, received call from dealer that they would have to order the part and my vehicle would not be ready until the part was in on tuesday the 25th and repairs completed.why did they not have the part on hand at the dealer if this was an urgent recall? called toyota, ref # 1508221403 and they indicated they only send the part when the vehicle has been identified as needing the repair.this is not "within a reasonable time" for an urgent safety recall.

I received a recall notice in the mail on may 12 about a possible defective circuit board for the electric power steering. I took the car to a toyota dealer on may 13, and was told later that day that my car did indeed have one of the units deemed defective. I was given a loaner car at no charge. Everything seemed ok, but now it is 10 days later, and no replacement part has arrived. Not only that but both the dealer and the national customer service number are completely unable to predict when any replacement parts will be available. Is there any way to make toyota more responsive? is there any way to get toyota to put more pressure on the manufacturer of the circuit board in question? what constitutes a "reasonable time" for toyota to remedy this defect?

This vehicle has a really bad electrical issue with the steering wheel,it feels like it wonders from time to time.then the motor will stall out almost completely while driving down the road. Taken to dealer to only have them not replicate the same problems as when we have it. I know it's not me because my spouse has discussed it with me too. I see there's recalls for similar problems within the same production on this vehicle but somehow it didn't get any notifications but clearly it describes the same problems.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact stated that while at a stop light, the steering wheel seized and became difficult to maneuver when making a right or left turn. The eps warning light illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 38,040.

Back stop light get rain water! passenger side front break always wearing out before others breaks ! trunk door automatic broken! 3 row sit under need get rushed!seat belt mounted on the floor if you put mats pull you back all time ! ac went u turn on not working right away take 5-10 min to cool down !

[xxx]. 2015 toyota highlander, 70,000 miles. While parked, vehicle was stationary. Driver side door will not open from outside when unlocked via keyfob or the manual key.occurred several times with 2 different key fobs on several occasions this month. Opens fine from the inside after crawling across the seats to activate door latch from inside handle.parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The driver's side door check stop has failed twice through normal use (of opening and closing the door). I have never had a car where this part has failed even once. First time was in feb of 2017.

Intermittent closing problems with automatic rear hatch. More often than not the rear hatch will begin to close but stop about 8 inches from fully closing. The door must then be closed manually which requires effort. This issue happens both inside our garage and outside in numerous locations. It happens when the vehicle is on a level surface as well as an incline.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact stated that during inclement weather, water leaked inside the vehicle through the molding on the front driver and passenger doors. The contact stated that the molding was not sealed properly to prevent water from leaking in. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the technician stated that the vehicle was working up to specifications. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 700. ....updated 07/22/15updated 9/21/2015

Rear boot lidnot operational.tried using.my keys and also the dash button but the gate wont open or close. Had to open fron the window to load my shopping.

Both front door actuators failed at the same time with 34k miles on the vehicle. Electric locks will not operate on either door. Vehicle was parked and had to entered through the rear doors or by using the hidden key.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the driver and passenger doors failed to unlock. The failure recurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (atlanta toyota located at 2345 pleasant hill rd, duluth, ga 30096; (770) 872-0087) where it was diagnosed that the actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 9,000.

This highlander has a power liftgate.if a child or adult gets in the way of the liftgate when it is lowering, the child or adult can be seriously injured, crushed or killed because the liftgate has no easy reversing feature. It does reverse when it hits an object but the force required to make it reverse is too great and will hurt or kill a human who gets in the way. People often reach in the trunk to fetch something after the operator decides to close the trunk. If this happens with the power closer, the operator must know the exact location of the stop control either by feel or by sight to stop the operationof the liftgate in order to prevent injury. This is asking too much of the operator. The lift gate should be designed to reverse or stop immediately just like the safety features on automatic garage door closers. This is a serious safety defect and needs to be addressed immediately before some gets hurt or killed. I have already pointed this out to toyota and the file number is #[xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact stated that the tailgate failed to open without warning. The vehicle was taken to the truck farm of easley (4296 calhoun memorial hwy, easley, sc 29640, (864) 220-1811), but the cause of the failure was undetermined. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer referred the contact to a toyota dealer. The local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: 1810172395. The contact was referred to nhtsa. The failure mileage was 71,933.

Clunking noise from rear end of vehicle when braking, dealer was authorized to change rear away bars and shocks, no fix, now toyota corp., says this is normal characteristic of vehicle ? i don't feel safe driving vehicle with noise, and as brakes feel soft also.

Driver side door lock mechanism worked only intermittently.had to crawl through passenger side to unlock door manually by pulling on the door handle.replaced door lock mechanism at dealership.now the left rear door is starting to malfunction.sometimes passenger is unable to open door from inside of car and the door has to be opened from the outside.

Mold smell in car. Musty smell coming from a/c, water on floor of drivers and passengers side front, mold under carpet/padding.

Navigation system terrible

The dash readout for mph began showing very erratic nmbers. Going from 24.4 mpgto 29.7 mpg and down to 13.1 mpg all in a span of about 4 miles. This mpg of 24.4 was for the prior 3000 miles. The dealer could not replicate this happening. They also said that toyota had no bulletins for this matter either. I contacted toyota and they said that i must have accidentally reset the unit and by doing so it was not unusual for these large swings in mpg. This was not the case. I had over 100 miles on since my last fill up and until this happening the mpg number was quite steady. The only that i indeed may have done this was that last fill up because that is the only time that i ever do a reset and i did not do it at that time. Previously i had seen some strange swings in mpg but not as large of a swing and not lasting for as long of time and those instances the reading did self correct.

Vehicle navigation system reboots to default settings approx 1 - 3times a week requiring driver attention to reset. Unit has been replaced by dealer with new unit.new unit has the same reboot frequency. This reboot typically occurs after "normal" start, then while underway full reboot about 30 seconds to a minute later, while in motion, on the road. No recollection of a reboot while sitting still ..(warming the engine waiting for passenger etc)this reboot may occur either with or without a cellphone present in the vehicle.

While travelling on interstate 25 near fort collins, colorado, our toyota highlander's closed panoramic sunroof shattered. We were travelling at a speed of 75 mph on a cloudy day with no obstacles or flying debris noticed. This is a new 2015 toyota highlander that we have only been driving 4 months. The sunroof was closed at the time and the debris was luckily trapped by the roof lining. We quickly exited to a nearby gas station where a larimer county sheriff's deputy was stopped. He looked at the damage and wrote a report.

Car door locks do not work with keyless ignition system

Toytota highlander limited 2015 gps consistantly offers wrong directions. Even on a.straight away such as us rt 1 it will take me aroind the block only to be put back on the same road. Itnhas taken me off highway ramps and sent me through neighborhoods only to put me baxk onto the highway. I contacted toyota corporate who indicated theh were sorry but this is not covered indwr warranty as it is considered an assessory. The dealer said it may need map update whichnis 175 for the software load plus $ 75 service fee. My cheap $100 garmin provides free lifetime map updates and i have had to use it to ensure i reach my destination. Toyota has misrepresented the value of the useless gps.

Infotainment system keeps crashing and rebooting during normal operation/driving conditions.most occurrences happened during hot days but has occurred during in the morning when the temp. Was below 70 f.occurred on july 17 (3-4 times), aug 20 (over 10 times) and aug 31 (1 time).

Fuel door would not open by pressing the interior button or the emergency latch. Had to take it to the dealer who also could not open it and they removed the part until it could be fixed. I drove with the gas tank door open until the part was replaced. We discovered the issue while parked at a gas station. We could've been stranded.

The entertainment/navigation system freezes and turns off randomly. Constant dailyissue. Obvious wide spread issue as read on a complaint page found athttp://www.landerfan.com/archives/complaints-about-the-toyota-highlander-navigation-system/

Sunroof glass exploded.my family and i were getting on the interstate, no other vehicles around us and we had been traveling all afternoon with not temperature variance.right when we hit 80 mph we heard a very load bang like a gun had gone off in the car.then we heard the wind noise coming from the sunroof.the cover was closed so we couldn't see what happened.i pulled off at the next exit.when i looked at the sunroof it was completely shattered.the glass that was still in place around the rim of the sunroof was protruding up away from the vehicle so i knew nothing hit it to break it.the bang was really load as well so i am extremely doubtful that it was caused by any kind of exterior object.very lucky the cover was closed or we would have had glass all over us.

Driving at 70mph on the ohio turnpike today 3/22/2019 at approximately 6pm we hear a loud boom.this sounded like we were shot at from a cornfield.then we heard small fragments of glass above us blow into the air.there was no rocks or we were not under a bridge for something to fall on it.it was just an exploding glass above our head in the panoramic sunroof. See pictures very scary this should not have happened.

The radio/navigation system will malfunction and shut off and restart. At night this is a hazard due to the flashing light of the radio causing a distraction. This is also a hazard due to the navigation system not working. This happens at random times, it could turn off and on several times a minute or it could do it once an hour. If there is a short in the radio could this cause a fire? this happens all the time while in motion or sitting still and on every road.

On july 15, 2015, my wife and i bought a new 2015 toyota highlander xle fwd from a toyota dealership.we special-ordered the exact car we wanted.we have now owned the car for 2 years and put about 12,000 miles on it. Before buying, we test drove a honda odyssey, a honda pilot, a toyota sienna, a toyota highlander, a nissan pathfinder and a jeep grand cherokee.after test driving each of the cars noted above for less than an hour i had a very strong headache.as a rule, i don't get headaches, so these were obviously the result of my breathing the air in these new cars.car interiors are made using plastics, adhesives, fire-retardants and a long list of other materials, many of which off-gas highly toxic chemicals.so we first tried to find a used highlander, but could not find a recent model year that was equipped the way we wanted.so we ordered a new one.after we took possession of the car, i drove it home, with all the windows down, the moon roof open and the ventilation fan running at full speed.i then parked the car in our driveway and left it in the sun all day, everyday for a month.i had the windows down just slightly and a small fan in the car which stirred the air.i also put a large tray of activated carbon in the car, changing that material every few days.at night, i moved the car into our garage, rolled down all the windows and had an exhaust fan running, which changed the air in the garage several times an hour.after a month of that routine i was able to drive the car without getting a headache, though after two years, i can still feel the effect of that polluted interior air.our granddaughters are visiting us this summer and, though i never mentioned my experience to them, they both hold their noses when they get in the car, until they can roll down a window.please add interior air quality to your safety ratings.

Back stop light get rain water! passenger side front break always wearing out before others breaks ! trunk door automatic broken! 3 row sit under need get rushed!seat belt mounted on the floor if you put mats pull you back all time ! ac went u turn on not working right away take 5-10 min to cool down !

We recently test drove several new cars. After being in each of the cars for less than an hour, we had very strong headaches. As a rule, we don't get headaches, so these were very obviously the result of breathing the air in these new cars. Car interiors are made using plastics, adhesives, fire-retardants and other materials, many of which off-gas highly toxic fumes. I found no agency which currently tests vehicles for the presence of these toxics. We test drove a used toyota highlander and we did not get a headache in that vehicle, but we could not find a used one that was equipped the way we wanted. So we ordered a new one. After we took possession of the car, i drove it home, with all the windows down, the moon roof open and the ventilation fan running at full speed. I then parked the car in our driveway and left it in the sun all day, every day for a month. I had the windows down just slightly and a small fan in the car which stirred the air. I also put a large tray of activated carbon in the car, changing that material every few days. At night, i moved the car into our garage, rolled down all the windows and had an exhaust fan running, which changed the air in the garage several times an hour. After a month of that routine i was able to drive the car without getting a headache. Although i can still feel the effect of that polluted interior air, it is tolerable and improving with time. We now know that this out-gassing process never ends; it only lessens over time; and, contrary to what many still believe, it is also known that long exposures to extremely small doses of toxic materials can be more damaging to human health than a large, short exposure. Given these facts, i strongly suggest that our government add passenger compartment air quality to its safety rating protocol. The auto manufacturers certainly aren't going to do this of their own accord.

The navigation system is a hazard.. When you finally get the voice command to work it only gives you about 15 seconds to make a decision which could cause an accident and also the navigation does not work well.. It only has about 1/2 of the towns in each state if that! it does not always take you the safest way.. I have had it updated and checked out.. I ended up having to go back to using my garmin and my phone for directions.. It is a very cheap system and not worth the extra cost of having it in my highlander.missing addresses: to be perfectly honest, this probably isnt my last complaint.ive been annoyed by the inability of the toyota nav system to find certain addresses which is needed for my travels..there have been (at least) a dozen cases in recent months where ive tried to program in an address, but wasnt able to do so. The system uses a predictive text interface that restricts the available keyboard entries to make typing easier. And this is just here in my little delaware co. Nyive had instances where, for example, i needed to enter a four digit address and the system only allowed me to enter three digits. Its as if the nav maps didnt include the full range of addresses along the road in question. And this includes several state i have been into and have tried to enter addresses.. And this a distraction in my driving especially when i am trying to find a motel.. For example i was on rt 90 in ny and wanted a hotel and asked please find me a motel along my route and it insisted no motels along my route.. I was headed toward syracuse, ny.. Does that make since?i am not the only person with this problem please check out this site. Http://www.landerfan.com/archives/complaints-about-the-toyota-highlander-navigation-system/you will find several complaints about this system..

Sunroof glass exploded while in motion.nothing hit the glass.

Wind noise from panoramic sunroof. Seal deteriorating at both ends.

Picked up2015 toyota highlander from the dealer drove it home.operated the car for one day, parked it in the garage and later had a fire in the garage that destroyed the house and 2 other vehicles . As the cause of the fire is still "undetermined" several fire inspector 's i spoke with"suspect" the vehicle as a "suspected origin"... As the fire was so hot that not much was left of the toyota to review based on history this incident should be noted....this highlander had less then 80 total miles of operation and operated for less the 3 day's... Nothing out of the normal noted about the car the day of the fire..looking over issues with the 2014 model year having fire issues i would agree with the inspector's opinion that would be a highly suspect cause..

My son dropped me off at the airport. I forgot to leave him the keyless device that keeps the vehicle running. He called and let me know he made it home (30 miles approx.to his home) and i didn't leave him the keyless device. Should this be a safety recall? and how could this happen?

While driving the navigation/radio will freeze and become unresponsive.the radio will then reboot and reset all settings back to default.this is very distracting for the driver and the passenger in the automobile and could lead to an accident.there are numerous complaints on various forums.i asked toyota fix this issue and they offered to update the firmware for $70.this is not a part that broke or degraded from ware, this radio doesnt work and toyota is trying to make money off of this.i contacted entune to see if i could get the file to update the software myself and was told no.i was told if i had less than 36000 miles i could get this fixed for free as it would be under warranty.this isnt a map update, this is a function that doesnt work.i paid for this premium audio package that doesnt work.why would my mileageplay any part to my radio not working?

Sunroof glass exploded.i was driving down an interstate highway at 70 mph in 4 lanes of holiday traffic.we had been in the car for about 20 minutes when we heard a loud bang (it sounded like a shotgun went off in the car) and glass was flying everywhere. I looked up and there was a hole about 4" by 2" in the sunroof and the balance was all shattered.after pulling onto the shoulder of the highway and looking from the outside, the glass edges of what was left were protruding up. This happened on a sunday, so i had to bust as much of the remaining glass out that i could to drive it home.the temperature was 85 at the time.i have had my vehicle for 3.5 years andi have 60,000 miles on my car.this should not happen!toyota will not admit any fault and told me to send a claim to my insurance.

The pre collision system applied brakes on two occasions when there was no possibility of a collision. I was drivingat approximately 45-50 mph approaching a concrete paved low bridge/overpass; the events occurred at the same spot at two different times. The events were frightening since the dash flashed red and the brakes were applied very hard for no apparent reason.

Many toyota highlanders are effected by a consistent buzzing noise in the cabin. This problem has been diagnosed to a faulty air servo motor.at first glance, you might say this buzzing noise isn't a safety issue, however i beg to disagree as many have attested that it is a distraction to their driving.some have gone so far as to sell their vehicles because of this issue.what is the burden of proof for this to be a safety issue?a distracted driver having an accident and attributing it?toyota has not issued a service bulletin to date to address this issue.thank you for your time.http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/333-3rd-generation-2014/1077937-weird-vibrating-buzzing-noise-15.html

Three of the door lock actuators failed on this vehicle at the same time.my wife cannot unlock the car doors without going to the one door that is working when she pushes the unlock button on her remote.this is a major safety issue and there are thousands of articles and message board posts on the internet related to door lock actuators failing on toyota vehicles.toyota is providing some financial assistance to repair the issue but it is not near enough to cover it all and i am out of pocket for a large amount of the repair.due to the scope of the issue i believe this should be handled through a recall.

As i was pulling into a parking space and applying the brakes, the car unexpectedly accelerated and hit the building wall.since i was puzzled by what happened, i read several articles about toyota automobiles doing just this same thing.most of the articles covered toyota automobiles older than mine, i did find several recent reports, including two that involved 2015 highlander models just like mine.i plan to also notify the manufacturer, toyota.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. While driving approximately 5 mph with the accelerator pedal being depressed, the vehicle decreased in speed and an unknown warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, but the failure was unable to be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was told that the failure occurred due to driver error and was documented on several occasions on the vehicles black box. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000. The vin was unavailable.

I was involved in an accident that i believe was caused by sudden unintended acceleration (sua).i was pulling into a diagonal parking space on a city street, proceeding at a very slow speed, when there was a sudden surge in acceleration accompanied by a grinding sound.i hit the brake to no effect, and the vehicle jumped the curb and hit a pole (not connected to anything).the air bags did not deploy, and we were shaken up but not injured.the car was not drivable and was towed to a body shop.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. On august 31, 2018, while driving at unknown speeds, the vehicle surged. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (lakeside toyota, 3701 n causeway blvd, metairie, la 70002, (877) 512-8274) where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not contacted. Additionally, on august 31, 2018, the vehicle accelerated without warning, jumped the parking bumper, and crashed into the quarter panel of a transport van. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact sustained chest injuries and medical attention was provided. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the same dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted at 800-331-4331, ext 73822 and provided case number: 1809053132. The manufacturer stated that the event data recorder would be retrieved from the vehicle. The failure mileage was 68,000. *dt

Light on cruise control lever on steering column flickers off and on if vehicle is in motion and steering column is in use. Alternator in car already required replacement at 73,000. Dealership was advised of issue and i was told there was nothing wrong with the lever.

The contact owns a 2015 toyota highlander. When the cruise control was activated and set at 55 mph, the cruise control failed to maintain the set speed when going downhill. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The contact was informed by the dealer that the function was normal when traversing a hill. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 2,999. Updated 01/27/16*ljupdated 02/04

The vehicle's side mirrors are placed so that they block visibility for a short person. I am just under 5'4" and when at a four way intersection, the mirrors directly block the view of where a car would be stopped to the left and to the right. I actually was involved in a minor collision where i did not see the other car stopped at the stop sign to my left although they claimed to be. Now i always need to move my head to get a clearview of the road area next to the the stop signs to the left and to the right.

Improper application of rear view mirror mounting plate to windshield incomplete (partial coverage) of epoxy adhesive application to the windshield mounting plate. The black plastic cover and mirror holder expands in high intensity sun. The expansion increases concentrated tensile forces between the mounting plate and windshield, causing the mounting plate to tear from the windshield. The result is a significant removal of glass from the passenger cabin side of the windshield, and loss of the structural integrity of the windshield.mirrors with integrated electronics then swing from the electrical wired, the mirror obstructing visibility, and becoming a detached hazard within the passenger cabin.the event occurred in a grocery store parking lot, the vehicle having been stationary and parked in the sun (99.1 degrees at the time) for approximately one hour.time of day: about 13:00 hrs.location:https://www.google.com/maps/place/1733+e+palm+canyon+dr,+palm+springs,+ca+92264/@33.7999482,-116.5284111,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x80db1b6804f844bb:0x2c7726c52c54599d!8m2!3d33.7999482!4d-116.5262224

Repeated cracking of the windshield from even trivial impact from highway rocks/stones. Windshield replaced once by the dealer service station with oem glass at a cost of 1600 dollars out of pocket expense by the owner. Cracked again with another small rock hitting the windshield, directly in the line of sight. Inspected by the same dealer service center, advised to replace again at owners expense as toyota does not cover glass damage. Multiple toyota highlanders and sienna minivans all across the usa have had this issue of windshield cracking in the last few years . Suspect there is a design/manufacturing/ quality control issue. Nhtsa needs to look into this as it affects the safe operation of the vehicle.

The visor will not stay up and drops down obstructing the drivers view of the road completely(if taller than 5'9').when swungto the side it obstructs the view out the left window, and distracts the driver by swinging into the left side of their face while turning/changing lanes while driving. This is a common problem with toyota vehicles due to a poor design friction mechanism that should hold the visor at any angle out of the drivers way.replacement is $300 discouraging proper replacement and causing drivers to endure the safety hazard.toyota has previously repaired visors under a technical bulletin on older vehicles.due to the cost there are dozens of repair procedures and removal processes recorded on youtube to illustrate how widespread 'toyota visor won't stay up' just search on youtube.removed the visor does not block the drivers view but removes safety warnings for the airbag and safe operation rollover warning.toyota should issue another technical bulletin for this supposedly improved visor mechanism and repair for owners.

While driving at highway speed of about 60 mph, the moonroof burst and shattered in to thousands of pieces. There was no warning, no indication of stress or wear before the incident. Hundreds of others have had similar occurrences as discussed on internet forums.

April 24, 2015[xxx]to an appropriate representative of the national highway traffic safety administration: in november 2014, i purchased a toyota highlander limited model id# [xxx]:. During freezing weather this winter i discovered a dangerous design fault relating to the vehicle. Much of the windshield wipers can be entrapped and embedded in ice, and the defroster does not melt ice in that area. The wipers are incapacitated. The defroster clears the windshield but does nothing to free the wipers from ice. That was the case for me during four days of freezing weather.there is an auxiliary function in the vehicle that addresses the windshield wipers. But that only "bumps" the ice, it does nothing to melt the ice. Appreciative of your appropriately addressing this issue.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I purchased this car 7-31-2015, by 8-3-2015 i noticed the windshield and passenger side windows looked badly pitted. I called the dealership and on 8-7-2015 took it in. They said it was pitch from a tree and agreed to detail it to remove the sap. I picked it up the same day. That was not the problem as the windows are still showing prisms when light comes through. When i came back about it again 8-28-25015 they said they couldn't see it at all but did pull another highlander out that was just taken off the truck, it too had the same issues with the pitting, the dealer has agreed to replace the windshield but not the passenger windows. I'm not happy that i was sold a car with defective windows. It is a safety hazard for night driving or when the sun is low. What can i do about this?

Rear window exploded inward while driving. Very loud bang sound. Nothing hit it. Temp was 66 degrees, clear skies.i had the front driver's window partially opened when this happened.

Bought this 2015 highlander brand-new in january 2015 from the dealer. It had 476 miles on the odometer. Within a few thousand miles, a stone chipped the windshield and within days the windshield was a spider's nest of spreading cracks all across up and down the windshield. I had this same issue with a brand new 2017 highlander purchased from the same dealer. I believe toyota slanted the hood of the vehicle down for better airflow and resulting mpg increase and in so doing, all road debris such as stones, are propelled up right onto the windshield and the stones smash the windshield. What are the random odds that a brand-new, dealer-bought 2015 and 2017 highlander would both get a stone chip that destroys the windshield within the first few thousand miles of driving? these windshield aren't cheap to replace- about $1400. The date of occurrence and mileage i have stated for this complaint are to the best of my recollection as this issue occurred in 2015 and i did not file this complaint until 6-9-2017 when i had the exact same issue occur on the brand new purchased 2017 highlander, which i filed complaint # 10994221 on. These two complaints should be cross-referenced. I believe the 2015+ model year highlanders will demonstrate a statistically significant higher rate of occurrence of windshield failures owing to their slanting the hood angle down towards the pavement to achieve a lower wind profile and higher mpg. The effect of this is that all rocks and debris from the road are thrown up onto the windshield violently resulting in windscreen damage. I had a 2009 highlander, also purchased brand new, that had no such issues as the hood angle was higher and more truck like.

I was driving down a feeder road of the interstate ~50mph.there were no other cars around me and the sunroof exploded.i pulled over and the remaining glass was clearly pushed outward, not inward.

Both diver and passenger visors do not stay set. They move up when not expected and the sun is in your eyes especially in the mornings and evenings when the sun rises and sets!! extremely dangerous!!! dealer said it was normal. I highly disagree.

At 2000 miles we noticed our wheels pitting.we thought this was unusual as our wheels were plastic coated called 'crometech'.we were at the dealers and mentioned that our car had only 2000 miles and shouldn't be having this problem. Our car now has 7070miles yes seven thousand miles and they won't do anything for us.my wife and i are in our 80's and they are are takeing advantage of us because we're old. They want us to pay for new wheels $750.. Each.
