Air bag warning light on dashboard does not turn off in cold weather (20 degrees f, or lower). The warning will stay on even when engine and interior are warm.if the engine is turned off once warm, and then turned back on, air bag warning light turns off with all other panel lights, as it should. With cold weather, the airbag light will stay on when vehicle is stationary, or in motion, and at any speed and will only shut off if car is turned off and then restarted.

Vehicleaccelerated on its on causing vehicle to start up steep hill where the front end slid to the right where vehicle proceeded to go up a drive/carport striking a porch and rock wall

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the vehicle was involved in a crash where the driver side was impacted and none of the air bags deployed. The driver and two passengers suffered head and back injuries as a result of the crash. A police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop where the vehicle was declared as destroyed. The manufacturer was contacted who stated that they would be calling her after analyzing the complaint. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 87,393.

I t-boned a car going approximately 35-40 mph with no braking time and the air bags did not deploy.it caused over $12,000 worth of damage to the front end of my car, but the air bags didn't go off?i bought the car used, but was told that it was a "certified" toyota used car.i now wonder if there was an air bag in it at all.

The air bags dashboard light blinks intermittently in temperatures below 20 f.dealer says to bring in. Trouble is we need the car for hours before they open and by that time the car has warmed up, the car has been turned on and off several times during errand running. After which time, the warning light is not showing.1-trouble is we are not assured this is just a warning light issue which means it's okay to use while light is flashing. Nor do we know if this means the air bags may be defective and not work in any conditions!?2-the dealer claims to not be aware of this issue although a simple search of the internet shows the same issue--their answer? "we didn't find any codes when we tested it".3-this issue showed several times while our car was covered under the platinum warranty at the time they first "tested" for problems.

The air bag sensor stay on when cold. It will not turn off until car worms up and engine is shut down and restart.the sun visor will not stay on and it is falling down during driving.both issues are safety hazard

My air bag lite keeps poping on

Airbag warning light illuminates in freezing temps and blinks at different rates. Once the temperature warms up, upon restart the light no longer blinks. I'm not sure if this will cause a problem if i need air bag support in colder temperatures. This has happened in the past several times as well.

The contact owned a 2002 toyota highlander. While driving approximately 50 mph, the contact crashed into another vehicle and the air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed.the contact sustained neck, lower back, and chest injuries that required medical attention. The vehicle was destroyed. The vehicle was not taken to a mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.

The vehicle was in an accident and was hit head on. The vehicle was moving at approximately 30-35 mph at impact. The front air bags failed to deploy. Provide further details.

2002 toyota highlander. Consumer states air bags did not deploy during a collision*tgwthe consumer stated a van pulled out in front of husband while traveling approximately 55 mph. The impact was at 45-50 mph. The consumer's husband hit his head on the steering wheel and suffered amnesia and the consumer suffered a neck injury.

Head on collision of an abandonned vehicle at 30-35 mph in a 2002 toyota highlander-airbags did not deploy.

Air bag warning light comes on. Defective center airbag sensor.

I saw someone steal my car and told them they hacked. Windshield wipers would slow up and down. Burning of the electrics when try to charge. Car stopping in the middle of the road. Car going on and off. The middle of the road, turning back on. Speed control messing up. Security warning going up and down.. Battery would shut on and off. Car locks going on and off.couldbarelysteer the car.

The interior heating/ac system and fan repeatedly fails to operate properly.in the spring summer when the ac would failto blow cold and blow heat that wasn't so bad. I got the control knob fixed and all seemed to work fine.however the knob has failed again and when i needed the heat/defrost fan to workat night the frost got worse because the knob failed and the heater/fan would only blow cold air.depending on the season and the position of the knob when it fails this should be construed as a safety issue when it affects the visual clarity of the windshield .

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the security system failed and caused all of the doors to lock. The doors could not be opened manually, causing the contact to be trapped in the vehicle during extreme heat. The police department broke the rear window to release the contact. The contact felt constant weakness in the head due to the extreme heat exposure. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to have a diagnostic test performed. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 39,050 and the current mileage was 39,106.

The heater would not provide hot air. I pushed in on the switch and the heat would work as long as i held the switch pushed in (not designed to be pushed - rotary selector). Eventually, even pressing the switch in would not work. I went on line and found a discussion blog that discussed my exact issue. I followed the recommendation and pulled the face cover off, removed the control panel and discovered exactly what had been described - a broken single strand wire that ran to the back of the switch. I attempted to make the repair using a multi-strand wire as recommended because the dealer repair option was $1,000. The heater appears to work -slightly, but now i have no ac. I think the circuit board was damaged by the soldering iron heat. Because we live in the seattle area, this causes issues with the window defogger as well as having no ac.

While parked, the vehicle caught on fire in the dash board panel.

The ac likes to blow hot air when in the max ac setting and the temp knob being in the coldest position. Nut being the temp setting gauge comes loose causing the ac to blow hot air.happens anytime if parked or driving.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander.when the contact opened the door to her vehicle, she discovered the passenger compartment filled with smoke.the passenger seat was burned.there were no occupants in the vehicle at the time of the failure.the police and fire departments arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire.the investigator informed her that there was an electrical fire underneath the passenger seat.the contact stated that the seat was a manual seat, not electric.the vehicle was destroyed.a police and fire report was filed.the failure mileage was 97,000.updated 1/6/09 updated 01/14/09.

Air conditioner thermostat does not work properly. It swings back and forth between cold and hot without touching dial. This is very dangerous during winter where you could die if not able to get heat.

My passenger side brake light is intermittent at best. Replaced bulbs many times, cleaned contacts, etc...but no help.on-going problem . Was rear-ended due to this exact problem. Driver side brake light fine...it is always passenger side. Many complaints about this same exact issue on-line.

My 2002 toyota highlander had approximately 110,000 miles on it at the time when i started hearing a noise around the distributor.i took it to my mechanic (not toyota for other reasons) and he said the bearings in the distributor were going out.i called toyota (toyota of texas - grapevine) to order the part.they didn't have any in stock, so had to order from the dc.they said it would be in4 days and to call back.called back in 5 days and they said they had to order from hq in california and it would be in next week (ha!).called next week.still no distributor!!had to order it from japan!!at that point, the regional parts manager called me and said that a highlander distributor has never gone out.i discussed my disgust with the fact that there was no distributors for a 6 year old highlander in the united states!!my mechanic was able to get with a local distributor rebuilder to try to fix it even without having the manual on the toyota distributor.he was able to rebuild it before the distributor i ordered came in 3 weeks after the initial order.in the end, my highlander sat at my mechanic's shop for 3 weeks and i was stuck renting a the whole time.

Ac/heat temperature control switch malfunction.this is a problem that toyota is aware of and chooses to disregard, since it tends to fail after the warranty on the new part and replacement parts expires before the problem.a small, soldered wire which connects the switch to a circuit board in the dash fails.should be an easy fix, but toyota dealers will only replace the entire panel for $800 - 1200.this has happened twice to me on this same vehicle.first time i paid $800, the second time i got a local guy to solder the wire on the old part and replaced myself.total cost about $10.shame on toyota.

The heating system stopped working. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and the dealer replaced some wires.upon leaving the dealer, the driver turned on the rear defroster and the wiring harness burned up.please provide any further information.

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning.smoke was coming inside of the vehicle though the dashboard. Vehicle caught on fire. Please fill in additional information.

Bought this vehicle in 2002. A year later noticed that the idle controller had problem. When started the engine in the morning, the idle went down very low and the engine shut down automatically. At first it happened not frequently. Past two years i took to a dealer for mayor tuneup, the symptom still resisted. Told the dealer and there was no actions at all. Now it happens more frequently. Usually if it happens, step on the gas peddle ( over 2k rpm) for a few seconds. Sometimes the idle returns to normal; but most of the times, the idle sets very low. I think the idle control for this model should be recalled.

I drove vehicle crown toyota for a minor service and mentioned that there was dripping of coolant noticed on the garage floor. Requested 'check and advise' on this.after approximately 3.0 hours, i went to the service desk for information regarding leak. I was taken to the service advisor [xxx]and he told me that they could not repair the leak because that situation is due to the head bolts pulling out of the block. The estimate for such repair was $6,780.28 plus taxand would involve replacing the short block. He mentioned this problem was known tooccur with vehicles having the 2az-fe engines such as the above highlander and that i could research same. Since i was buying only toyota cars since 1972 and have owned 4 such cars and one lexus based on my experience and conclusion thatreliability is number one with toyota. I can only say i was in shock.when i told my wife (this is actually her auto), she was sick for the next three days. A short discussion with aaa.suggested we look at this web site for complaints, etc.it turns out that this problem has occurred many times before and applies to several models including the rav-4 and highlander some with much lower mileage but there is no actual recall or letter notice from toyota. Also, no proposed action by dealerships to resolve the problem. I think that dumping this sudden, major expense problem on owners is very irresponsible- not worthy of toyota. Compensation regarding the time loss and expense should be offered to owners or dealers should be instructed by toyota to resolve when found. Please note that this vehicle and all the previous was serviced by toyota /lexus dealerships. A positive response would be appreciated.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I was driving my 2002 toyota highlander on the highway and was accelerating to pass a car when i heard a loud noise coming from the engine area, all the lights on my dash came on and my car stalled. I struggled without the power steering and brakes to get my car over 2 lanes of fast moving traffic and get it onto the exit ramp. My auto had drastically slowed due to engine not working and i was almost hit several times as cars flew around and past me. I finally manage to get it off the highway and into a safe spot, but it was extremely difficult because i had lost all power and had no power steering or power brakes. I had it towed to the dealer. I am only the second owner of this vehicle and i know the original owner and he took very good care of this car doing all the maintenance himself and using only toyota parts. The dealer says my engine is ruined but he never mentioned anything about the problems they have had with these engines and sludge and engine failure. The original owner says he never received anything from toyota about the class action lawsuit nor any of the fixes for the sludge/engine failure problem. I could have been killed and am lucky i was not. Toyota should have recalled all these engines and fixed or replaced them instead of just secretly fixing them, only when forced to by the customer for only 8 years. Fact is, if the orig owner hadn't babied the car, the engine would have gone much sooner. So because he took good care of it, i am s-o-l because the 8 year extended warranty is up. I guess the real truth is that toyota make itscars to last longer than 8 years.

The contacts owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would leak antifreeze and the temperature gauge warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who discovered that the motor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

While driving on a busy interstate, the vehicle began to overheat, causing the need to pull over. The vehicle's engine temperature was at its maximum and was loosing coolant. After several inspections, it was determined that the head gasket had blown at such low overall vehicle mileage due to the engine head being made of aluminum and the block being made of steel. This also caused the vehicle head bolt threads to be stripped, resulting in the need for a new engine.

Driving on i-26 east bound with kids near exit 110 in columbia, sc.car veered violently 3 lanes and took a turn facing the traffic.lost complete control of the steering, brakes and the engine shut down abruptly.pictures and videos with tire marks are available for analysis along with the police contact report.engine started after several trials at which time the car was pulled away form the main lanes.all 4 tires are replaced 6-8 weeks ago with brand new tires.front drivers side tire shows the stress of the sudden impact.a pastor couple is the eye witness to the whole event.luckily rear traffic stopped avoiding a major accident.our sincere wish is to prevent this happening to other families by understanding the root cause of the problem.we moved the car to the nearest toyota car dealer and requested them to analyze the situation to avoid repeat of similar incidents to other families.

Last saturday 4/13/13 the check engine light came on and the car started shaking and making a weird noise. I haven't driven it since then when i parked it in the driveway. I didn't even trust it to park it in the garage because it smelled hot.white smoke and the smell of exhaust has been coming out of the exhaust.today was the soonest i could get it looked at (by a trusted local repair shop) and i was just told it's an internal engine problem.i see this has been a problem with this engine and because of a class action suit toyota has had to replace the engine in cars 8 years and newer, i don't qualify.i was never notified by toyota of this problem....and i am the original owner.i have replaced 3 oxygen sensors and the air conditioning compressor.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle began to shake violently as a strong odor ofengine oil and fuel emitted from under the hood. The engine warning indicator illuminated continuously. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and towed to an independent mechanic, who stated that the engine would need to be replaced due to engine sludge. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 99,800.

A couple of months ago white smoke emitted from the exhaust pipe. Last week, on atrip within 400 miles of my home, the engine and vsc light came on intermittently. I immediately called toyota and was told that the car could stop suddenly and leave us stranded so i made an appt for monday morning. The car rode very rough for the last two hours and it seemed as if it is ready to stall anytime. Toyota charged me $ 321.00 for a compression and diagnostics test. Toyota found that i had low compression. Toyota also offered to take apart my engine for 2667.00 to see if the rings were damaged. I refused the work and picked up my car. We called an engine repair business. The owner knew the make, model and year of my car and asked if we had just hit the 100,000 mile marker. We had. He told us of the oil sludge problem, settlement and faulty aluminum engines.i have researched similar characteristics with the highlander and see that it is a common problem for the 2002 highlander.the sludge situation would only be covered if it was within 8 years of the purchase date. What about the many consumers who still have this problem and it is past the eight years? i bought this highlander in 2005, had it serviced regularly and we also changed the oil ourselves. In 2008 i brought the car into the toyota dealership for a tune up and an oil change prior to a long trip. On the way home, the engine light came on and we pulled over to a local gas station and there was literally no oil in my engine. Toyota did the oil change but did not put 5 quarts of oil into my car for this long trip. When i returned i did confront the dealership but they denied any wrongdoing. We have, since that time period had to add oil continuously.it turns out that i will need to replace my engine for 4500.00.

Vehicle has toyota 2az-fe (2.4 l) 4 cylinder engine.oil & coolant leaking from back of engine.head bolts on main gasket failed.in searching internet, countless other owners have unfortunately experienced the same failure which is due to an inherent design problem by toyota.bolts between gasket and main engine block fail and cannot be repaired or replaced.have to buy and install a new engine.called toyota usa headquarters in torrance, ca. And spoke to them, they said they will do nothing for me.spoke to dylan and the case number is 1111291430.i believe that a recall should be issued and that toyota should assume financial responsibility for these failures, which are obviously due to a design and manufacturing problem of toyota.

May 17, 2002, i was in a car accident with my 3 month old 2002 toyota highlander.i was traveling in the right hand lane on highway 80 west bound between davis, ca and san francisco ca at 8:30 am.according to the police report from eye witnesses, my vehicle left the roadway without any brake lights, went through a cyclone fence, continued .10 miles and down into a ravine.brake lights never came on and the car never slowed.i was life flighted to the john muir medical center trauma unit.i arrested in the helicopter.i suffered a significant traumatic brain injury, multiple fractures, including a shattered jaw and a paralyzed vocal chord. No other vehicle was involved in the incident.

I bought a new toyota highlander in 2002.i'm not sure about the exact year, but i'm guessing in 2004-5, i also experienced the sudden racing accelerator problem around 4 times.each time i was able to pull over and put the car in neutral while the engine raced.i turned the engine off, and it worked properly after restarting.it hasn't happened in the last maybe 5 years. I reported this to the toyota dealer, and they told me it was a floor mat problem.i didn't believe it, because i experienced this, and the floor mat had nothing to do with it.as i said, it hasn't happened since, so i didn't follow up on it. There was no accident, and no one hurt, but i see that toyota has not included the 2002 highlander as a problem car, but i know that it is.i don't want anyone being hurt by this year and model car either.i still drive this car.thanks for anything you can do to fix the problem.

I noticed coolant leaking from underneath the plastic into intake manifold in the rear of the engine. I brought it in for repair and the mechanic said he noticed a large piece of foam rubber between the intake manifold and the engine block and head.the leak was behind the foam piece. The only option to discover the source of this leak was to remove the plastic intake manifold, which the mechanic did. After this was removed, it became obvious that coolant had been leaking a minor amount for quite some time due to build up between the cylinder head and block.the only option left is to remove the head, which requires an extensive disassembly (r and r cylinder head). After loosening the bolts in sequence, he noticed three of the head bolts in the back of the engine were loose.after he removed the head sure enough, one bolt came out with aluminum in the thread thus indicating a stripped bolt.and the other three were loose. He said the only option was to replace the engine block, which will cost about $6000 including shipping/labor. I can not afford this and so had the highlander towed back to my home.

2002 toyota highlander stall-reduce speed to 1000/2000 rpm and shut off engine during cold/hot weather.

Have regularly maintained my vehicle with all required and suggested toyota maintenance schedules, through the dealership, and with only 68,000 miles, i now have learned i have an oil leak between the motor & transmission.

The engine oil light was coming on when braking.i had recently had the oil changed.the engine was also emitting a white smoke when starting the car.oil was showing about 1/2 quart low on initial inspection. It took two trips to the dealer for them to finally discover internal oil gelling.no information was given by the dealer about previous problems with this vehicle and engine gelling.

While driving oil pressure warning light illuminated. This caused the vehicle to overheat.

In june 2008, i was driving when my engine apparently melted down. It went completely hot. I pulled over and there was what appeared to be coolant pooled under the car. Prior to this all scheduled maintenance had been done and there was no indication of anytrouble with the car earlier that day. I later took it to my mechanic who said he had never seen anything like that in his life. The engine had literally melted. He then tried to call toyota and got in contact with someone but they couldn't figure out what happened either and was unwilling to deal with it. He said it obviously had to be a factory defect. It cost me a whole new engine.

Toyota highlander-2002-engine oil turned to sludge, engine just short of seizing-new engine installed.

Past couple of months have seen smoke coming out of the tailpipe.sludge has built up and clogged the pvc system and inside of the valve cover causing oil to sit inside and damaged the valve seals. Dealer wants to clean the sludge under the valve covers and replace the valve seals- cost of 3,900.00.

I have owned a 2002 toyota highlander 4 cylinder, 2wd. My car stalled on the road about tow weeks ago and i had it towed to a toyota dealer. I have taken very good care of my car and can provide some partial paper work of my maintenance. The dealer is telling me that i need a new engine, and my bill will go over $5000.00. It has only 77000 miles and no physical damage to the car (no accidents). I have heard about the oil sludge law suit but it covers only 6 cyl but not 4 cyl. Could you please help me out on this issue. Thanks.

4 cylinder engine blocked warped where head meets block. Head bolts were stripped and could not be tightened down.following link describes the problem we encountered with our 2002 highlander which has the same 2.4 ltr 4 cylinder engine as the camry.http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/ camry/148454-camry-with-stripped-head-bolts/ all diagnosis and repair of our highlander was done at a toyota dealership in roswell, ga.

My 2002 toyota highlander v6 broke down on the side of the road. I had it towed to the toyota dealership where they informed me that oil sludge has clogged my engine and i would have to have it replaced to the tune of $6000. I was shocked because i always got my oil changed well before the suggested 7500 mile mark. I did some research online and found out my car was part of a recall and class action suit.they never sent a recall notice. We purchased the car when it was 2 years old. I contacted toyota usa and they confirmed that it was oil sludge but since a was a couple months beyond the class action suit of 8 years. I argued that they never sent us a recall notice. They pretty much said tough luck. I was lucky i was able to get my car to the side of the road safely( my 5 year old daughter was in the back). I don't feel toyota made enough of an effort to let the customer know of these issues.. I feel they were interested in protecting their reputation above their customers safety. I would have certainly gotten the car fix if they had sent the recall notice.i will not pay $6000 for something that toyota should. These cars are dangerous and this company is wreck-less.

I purchased a new 2002 toyota highlander from sierra toyota of lancaster, ca. I have experienced no problems with this vehicle until 25 jan. 2011 when the engine overheated while driving 40mph on city street. I took my vehicle to my mechanic and he informed me of a problem with the 2.4l 4cyl toyota engines in which some of the head bolts become loose/stripped where they attach at the engine block. I called sierra toyota of lancaster and they denied any knowledge of this problem. On further investigation, i discovered that sierra toyota had a specialist servicing one of their vehicles by placing inserts into the stripped holes the very next day. Sierra toyota refused to give me any monetary assistance in repairing my vehicle. After researching the bolt problem on the internet, i have found numerous toyota owners with the same engine, that have had the exact same problem with their vehicles. The only fix is either a complete engine replacement or having an expensive anchor-bolt redo. My costs look like to be about $2500, if there is no other damage found due to the over-heating. At this point, i don't even know if the new anchor-bolt system will work. My vehicle was always well-maintained and currently has apx. 126,000 miles on it.

Some earlier models of toyota's 2az-fe 4 cylinder engine are susceptible to sudden failure and are dangerous. The engine is widely used in toyota's popular camry, highlander, rav4 and scion tc models. Toyota needs to accept responsibility and investigate the engine.on 9/11/2010, 2002 toyota highlander's 2az-fe engine failed and left occupants stranded. Event took place immediately after exiting the highway. The vehicle's engine sputtered and ceased to function. The vehicle had about 75,000 miles on it.the vehicle was towed to a toyota dealership which reported the following:- oil and coolant leaking from the back of the engine head- hydrocarbon in the coolant- oil severely burnt due to overheatingthe estimate to open up and repair the engine could run anywhere from $2,000 to $7,500 depending on whether the engine block needed to be replaced. The vehicle had been regularly maintained according to the manufacturer's schedule with all the records to prove it.toyota denied request to investigate and defray costs.while engine was opened by a local mechanic it was discovered that two of the head bolts were loose and that the threads in the aluminum engine block for 3 head bolts in the rear were stripped. Repairing the engine involved re-threading the holes in the engine block for all ten head bolts using the time-sert thread repair kit.

Black smoke came out of the exhaust pipe, and vehicle consumed excessive oil.dealershipwanted toreplace the valve seal and piston o-ring s, but the parts were on back order. Vehicle is at the dealership for repairs and consumer was asked to use a rental car since vehicle's parts for repair where not available at that time.consumer received a call from dealer that vehicle was ready top be picked up.when consumer picked up the vehicle, he noticed that vehicle is once again smoking and experienced hesitation.took vehicle to dealership and replaced the timing belt which caused the hesitation.however, the problem with the smoke coming out and occasional hesitation still exist.*la

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning the vehicle was leaking oil underneath .

2004, my highlander was serviced for gel in the valve seals. On april 2, my car was brought to leith toyota because the car made a loud noise after being cranked and the oil light was on. As i drove a couple of miles, all computer lights came on and the car cut off. I was told testing was done and i had oil although it was not being pumped to the engine for some reason. (i have oil changed every 3,000 miles). The next day, i went to check on the progress and the service manager told me they drove the car around and it never cut off and he really did not know what was wrong with it. I decided to take it to another mechanic to find out and 10 miles away, the engine blew up. Now, i have no car to drive and i am a single mom that has to work. I feel that the service manager should have been honest with me regarding toyota's past engine defects and to drive my car would be fatal. After having it towed to another toyota dealership to check for oil sludge and requesting that my mechanic be present when dropping the oil pan, they told me that was not necessary and did it without calling me first. I have lost all future trust with this company and fell that their"hush hush recall" should have been made public.

My 2002 toyota highlander's check engine light seems to come on every 10,000 miles. This has been happening since 2004, at about 43000 miles, when i first took it to a local dealer mechanic. It is now 2009, 111000 miles later, and again the check engine light comes onqueue. Originally, the dealer mechanics told me they had corrected it prior to my warranty expiring. When my warranty expired, they told me that i needed to get an overhaul on my catalytic/exhaust system, which was quoted to cost about $5000 to fix! i believe my car was worth no more than $7000 at the time. An independent mechanic told me that there was nothing wrong with my catalytic system and that there may be a problem with the detection system. I've been shown how to reset the check engine light by the toyota dealer personnel, i suspect, because it is happening to other highlander owners. I am bringing this issue up now because it seems like a recall should have been issued years ago. I hope someone from toyota will recognize and fix this issue.

Shortly after the second oil change, 10000 miles the exhaust system started making noise.it started as a loud sound from the muffler and now has become a rattling sound and loud exhaust noise.the banging/rattling sound is worst during left hand turns.dealer stated we damaged the exhaust pipe and the brackets needed repair $175.the mechanic was unable to show me any physical damage to the exhaust system. I noticed the new highlanders have a different and smaller muffler which does not bang into adjacent parts. I wonder if i am not the only one with this problem.

A/c blows hot air on driver side when it should blow cold air as it does with passenger side.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander.while driving 65 mph, the passenger replaced the cigarette lighter and, without warning, it ejected and burned his hand.prior to the failure, the cigarette lighter failed to operate when the passenger attempted to use it to warm his coffee.on may 22, 2007, an inspector from toyota videotaped and duplicated the failure, however, he was unable to discuss his findings with the contact.on june 18, 2007, the contact received a letter stating that a factory representative inspected the vehicle and the case was transferred to toyota motor sales usa.the contact was given case number 200705071073 and was informed that he was responsible for notifying toyota motor sales usa for more details.the failure mileage was 87,900 and current mileage was 94,563.

After only having my new2002 toyota highlander for approx. 8 months, the acceleratorin the car stuck and i ended up running into a car.i complained to toyota and had the dealer look at the car numerous times, but they kept telling me there was nothing wrong.well 8 years later and they still haven't recalled my car, even though they have other years.

I was in the front passenger seat.i put the car cigarette lighter into its holder and inadvertently pressed it in all the way.after a few minutes it flew out of its space, it was all lite up and fell to the floor of the car where it began to burn the mat.i picked it up and got a 2nd degree burn on my finger.we could not believe that it happened so we put the lighter back in the holder and pressed it in.it flew out again.

Large amount water in passenger side of vehicle compartment, dealer stated due to clogged a/c drain. Our toddler developed congestion and allergy symptoms followed by mildew odor in vehicle.dealer cleaned out drains and subsequently had to change carpets and disinfect vehicle. Due to overwhelming deodorant smell in vehicle cannot tell if mildew still present, but we are afraid to put the toddler back in vehicle.toyota also trying to say not covered by warranty. *la

Component: equipment:electrical:air conditioner summary:the problem is with the air conditioning a/c control unit. I'd talked to several toyota owners about this, and they said that they have had this problem , and each has taken it to a dealership near them and got the same reply. This was a very expensive replacement part. The dealership that i went to said they have seen a few vehicles. The owners i talked to owned highlanders,4 runners, and minivans. My wife's highlander is a 200, 2 the other vehicles range from 2002 to 2004, for as i know there hasn't been anything reported about this. I sent an email to toyota and all i got back was they haven't had any recalls for that. The problem with my wife's highlander was that the heat stopped working during the winter. The only way to get it to work was to keep turning the knob until it would start blowing warm air, but it would not do it for long. The a/c worked fine ,but when winter returned, there was no heat. If the was a continuing problem, and more dealers found out about, why weren't they doing something about it. If one could research this i would appreciate it. If any body has any information on how to solve this problem thank you

I have read of numerous complaints from consumers concerning the a/c system on 2002 toyota highlanders.the complaints are similar to my own in that the a/c just stops working one day.if i turn the hot/cold switch knob to the cold section when just the vent is on, it blows hot air.if i turn it to the right for hot air- it gets extremely hot.even if i turn the a/c button on, cold air does not come out.this seems to be a defect in a switch.i've had the pressure to the a/c checked and it was normal and charged.i am fearful there is a short in a switch somewhere that may cause my vehicle to catch fire.it seems to be a major complaint with a lot of highlander owners.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander.the contact attempted to change the front driver'sside tire with the jack provided by the manufacturer.the jack bent forward and caused the vehicle to lean towards him.he believedthat this was due to metal fatigue of the jack.as a result, the tire landed on his left foot and trapped it underneath the vehicle.when he contacted the manufacturer, they sent him a letter stating that the vehicle's weight caused the jack to fail.no other offers, explanations, or remedies have been made.the current mileage is 55,500 , and failure mileage was 48,000.updated 06/06/07

Brake light assembly in toyota highlanders 2001 and beyond fail.thereby causing the brake lights not to work.the lights and fuses are not broken.there are 16 postings made since 2007 at http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/toyota-highlander/t7h7ld934gsqlc6bethat report the exact same problem.

The right brake light rear passenger side does not work. Ihave changed all bulbs and checked fuses. All other light in the assembly work just fine tail, backup, right blinker but when your press on the brake pedal the light does not come on. There are many complaints to the nhtsa about this problem. Direct action is needed to fix this problem before an accident or someone is pulled over for a problem that is not fixable on the customers end.

Rear-right break light not working. Replace bulb and did not work. Checked socket and all is fine but break light still not working. I have research this for a while and no solution. These seems to be a very common problem and toyota does not have a solution. Definitively a safety issue. I already got a ticket from police for not having these lights in working condition.

Toyota highlander brake lights.right side/passenger side brake lights go out often and even with new bulbs don't always work.faulty design.due to all the posts on the internet about the same issue i'm assuming this is a common and unsafe problem with highlanders.

The right brake light on my 2002 highlander keeps going out, despite the number of bulb changes i've done.there is a large number of highlander owners that have filed this same report online via bulletin boards, etc.

Right rear brake light connection is bad.i have changed the bulbs and all other lights on that side work.the tail lights, hazards, reverse and turn signal lights all work.the only light that continues to not work is the brake light lighting up when the pedal is pushed down.obviously, this is a safety hazard.this has been an ongoing issue for a year now and with online searches, i'm not the only one with the same problem.

Passenger right rear brake intermittent.took the car to my local toyota dealer, they could not find the problem.bulb, light socket, wiring, fuse all checked good.the issue has not gone away.today i was stopped by a police officer because of my passenger brake light not working.i told the officer about what i did to resolve the issue and that i took the car to the toyota dealer and they could not find out the problem.after explaining what i did to resolve the issue, the police officer explained to me this is a safety issue and the brake light needs to be fixed.i googled the problem this evening and found 10 web sites all having the same problem with the passenger right rear brake intermittent or not working. I found one common thread was that the majority of the complaints was on the 2002 model and a few on 2003.

Passenger side break light failure on 2002 toyota highlander. This is a safety issue when other drivers cannot see you break particularly from the right angle. This is an issue that has happened to many drivers of the same model year.see the web posts at http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/toyota-highlander/t7h7ld934gsqlc6be i am convinced it is a defect in the 2002 model and as such should be recalled. I have brought to the toyota dealer in manchester nh 5 times replacing lamp sockets and other attempts and it still does not work. I have to bring in again. There should be a standard way to fix it.

Right rear brake light inoperative when brake pedal depressed, bulbs have been replaced by owner and dealer.

I have a 2002 tooyota highlander, after a heavy rainstorm in july of 2004, i noticed that the headlamp on my front drivers side had moisture and was foggy on the inside of it. It went away in about a week or so. After going to a carwash i noticed the same problem and the area was wider. I notified lee's toyota in queens ny. I was told by the customer service rep. Jason that it was normal and the heat from the lamp will eventually make the moisture evaporate because it was made that way. After several episodes and the area of moisture spreading each time it rains snows or i go to a car wash. I now have a problem with the vision on my drivers side especially at night. The area is being obstructed because of the fog in the headlamp. I almost had 2 accidents because of it.i notified lee's toyota on several occasions, and was told they could do nothing unless i pay for it. I am disabled, must wear corrective lenses while driving and now i have a problem that hinders my vision. I read the car manual and there are no article about this. My niece has the same suv and she does not have this problem, i contacted toyota motor corp. And was told that i should have notified them before and i told them i did notify them when i became awear of the problem.toyota motors told me that they will pay to have it fixed but i must fix it and pay for it first and they will reimburse me. I feel that it is a defect and that toyota should fix the problemand pay for it before i have a accident or something. Please look into this situation. I am on a fixed income and can't afford itat this time.

Whenever my vehicle is loaded up the headlights blind oncoming drivers.i dread going on vacation with this vehicle.toyota dealer said a fix was not available.i tow a 15 ft boat 1200lbs.although the vehicle is rated for 3500lbs towing capacity the headlights when towing blind oncoming traffic i assume to poor suspension design.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander.the contact stated that her vehicle has an oil leak, which requires her to add oil to the vehicle every two days.the dealer stated that this is an issue with the fuel system.the vin, engine size, and mileage information were unknown.

Tank found to very rusted, and split, along with fasteners, so that gas was leaking while parked. Unable to drive the vehicle.

When one person exits the vehicle and locks their door the second person is stuck.all electric locks are instantly disabled.the only way to exit is to use the manual lock button which will set off the alarm 30 seconds after.the passenger inside has tomanually unlock the door, and set off the alarm.the only way to prevent, is to turn the ignition on before exiting, but isn't possible for most passengers.tsscc

Took off and pulled into traffic when the transmission quit working. Tried again and it worked. Dangerous.

Awhile back in the summer of 2009, i notified you about my concern for safety in my 2002 toyota highlander. The car took off for no apparent reason accelerating to an unsafe speed. I was only able to stop by shifting to neutral and slamming on the brakes missing several cars. The feedback i got was the floor mat...which i told the dealer was bull. I believe the problem may be in the computer. I checked all the cables and throttle body cables including linkage. I had the whole fuel system cleaned inside and out including the throttle body. This seemed to temporary solve the problem. My concerns are 1. I think toyota needs to look further back in years this has been a concern by goggling this problem. 2. When the problem(s) are identified you need the look at repairs where the parts may have been used. 3. I believe this problem may be caused by several factors.2002 toyota highlander

Transmission jumps in 3rd gear, dealer said must replace.

Pulled out of work parking lot onto major highway and heard loud clunk from engine area. Car stopped moving forward so i pulled off to side. Put car in park and engine was still running. Put car into drive and nothing happened. Put car in reverse and nothing happened. Loud metal grinding noise coming from engine compartment. Transmission shop said common problem with these transmissions. Cost to rebuild: $4,155.

I placed car into reverse to back out of parking spot.when i shifted into drive, the car remained stuck in reverse.the shift linkage was no longer functioning.i backed the car into a parking spot in the corner of the parking lot. When i stopped the engine i could no longer start the engine as it was stuck in reverse. I called a tow truck.the tow truck driver was able to place the tranmission into neutral (using a wrench on the transmission) enabling the car to be pushed forward.the car was then placed on the tow truck and towedto the dealer. The cable and shift mechanism required replacement.

I have had recurrent transmission problems that cost th ousands to fix but yet are not completely resolved.l just had my transmission completely fail after being serviced 17 months ago. Since replacing it, i still have problems with clunking dirt thing in the morning when it tries to change gears. Now there is a vibration and i have to take it back to the shop. The recurring problems are affecting my job which involves a lot of driving and i have to rent cars at my expense each time it goes for repairs at 2 to 4 days each event. Please look into this. My car is paid for and i cannot afford to buy ano th erbone.

At 108k miles, my 2002 toyota highlander transmission went out and had to be replaced.whatever happened to toyotas lasting to 200k miles, like in the commercials?i'll never be able to jump up and be the one proclaiming how many miles my toyota has now!i'm very disappointed, as i bought this vehicle expecting to drive it well beyond 100k miles and with further research, apparently i'm not the only disappointed highlander owner with the same issue.

Toyota 2002 highlander automatic transmission failed at 77,754 miles. Replaced by dealer under extended warranty after paying $50 deductible.this is a common problem and needs a recall.toyota refuses to acknowledge that they have a problem. Cost to replace without warrantee would have been $4290. The car now has 138,235 miles on it and based on other drivers' experience and history i could be facing another auto trans problem very soon.

Vehicle shifted out of park without warning.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Transmission went out in the middle of a busy interstate.just a week earlier, the dealer told me they cold find nothing wrong with the vehicle.

With only 106,000 miles on my highlander, the transmission has failed and needs to completely be replaced. A $4600 repair right before christmas. I am in tears.the dealership didn't seem very surprised that this would occur. Ironic?but the transmission specialist i went to for a second opinion said this should never have happened. He advised even proper maintenance wouldn't have prevented this kind of failure. It's just badequipment. He repeatedly stated how abnormal this was and toyota used to have a great reputation on the transmission and reliability. I purchased my toyota based on that reputation.and have had nothing but problems. At 35,000 miles i was a victim of the "sludge engine" issue too. Before the recall was issued on that. The entire engine had to be replaced. Before they were willing to fix it, i had to prove that i had changed the oil regularly. They accused me of not doing this.toyota knows there is a major problem with this vehicle transmission and from what i see, this is happening to others. It is happening in the rav4's too.they need to step up and take care of their customers and take care of these vehicles. This is the first and last toyota i will ever own.

I am financing a 2002 toyota highlander. On 6/25/09 while drivingon a major service road, i heard a large thump sound. I tried to pull over to make sure that i did not hit anything or blow a tire. Once that i saw that everything seemed okay, i proceeded into my vehicle and put the car into drive when i stepped on the gas the car just revved and it stayed into position, i kept changing gears not knowing what was wrong and as i changed into drive and stepped on the gas, my car quickly shifted and almost hit the car in front of me then it stopped again. Fortunately there was a automechanic shop on the corner, someone from the shop came to where i was to look at my car. The mechanic did the same as i did, shift gears and the car would jerk spontaneously back then forth but would not drive. The mechanics pushed it into the garage and inspected to find that my transmission wa gone at 68,000 miles. I have my car checked often, fluids replaced when need be. I do not understand how a transmission can just die at 68,000 miles. I called toyota because i have my car serviced at toyota. And because my extended warranty was expired in 2008 , they said there was nothing they can do but put in a new transmission. I have had the car towed to 3 locations to make sure i had several opinions and they all said the same thing that my transmission was bad. My car has been at reliable transmission for 2 weeks now, they are currently replacing the transmission for 4,000.00. The car will not be paid off until august 2010. I often heard that toyota was one of the best cars that one can purchase that's why i went with a toyota, however i find this to be quite disturbing to have to replace a major part of my vehicle in such a short time with low mileage. My complaint that i have done research and saw that there are a lot of problems with toyota highlander transmissions. This matter is serious and can cause an accident from the gears slipping. Toyota should be responsible for this repair!

Drive shaft going bad on toyota highlander 2002. Major part like this almost never fails. Very expensive to fix.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the passenger and driver's side seat belt thread was deteriorating. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the seat belts needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who offered to pay for half of the repair costs. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000 and the current mileage was 170,848.

The consumer was stop at a traffic light.without prior warning.another vehicle hit him from behind and the driver side power seat collapse.please provide additional information dealer is aware of the problem., ts

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact stated while driving at approximately 35mph, the accelerator cable disconnected causing the vehicle to accelerate. The contact mentioned that the brakes were engaged in to stop the vehicle from moving forward. The dealer stated that the wrong cable was placed in vehicle. The contact stated that the transmission became defective as a result of engaging the brakes while the vehicle was accelerating. The dealer and manufacturer were made aware of the problem. The failure mileage was 200,000.

Engine accelerating when brakes were depressed.

While traveling at less than 20 mph, the driver in front slammed into the car in front of them (no brake lights).i immediately stomped on the brakes... The highlander slowed very briefly and then went "numb".the highlander came to a stop only by hitting the car in front of me.there was plenty of room to stop and it should have.this is the 3rd time the highlander has "locked up" on sudden short stops.

Left (driver side) front abs began activating spontaneously as my 02 toyota highlander came to stop.service agency found no code. Removing fuse on abs sensor eliminated 'false activation' problem, but disabled abs; replacing sensor had no effect.discovered broken sensor ring on rear axle, due to corrosion.(necessary replacement of entire axle) eliminated abs activation on braking, but induced abs activation on acceleration from stop.replacement of another sensor (also contaminated/damaged by axle corrosion/infiltration) seemed to solve the problem, but i now experience noise/activation when rear wheel drive engages in winter driving.my online research (and service agency) indicate this is a recurring, growing problem in highlanders and lexuses and other toyota models sharing the rear axle assemblies, that are prone to infiltration corrosion damage, especially in the northern states.

2002 highlander ltd, 48k miles, well maintained. Abs system awry, activating left front brakes as brakes applied, most severe as coming to stop. No code, no remedy with replacement of rear sensor.presently driving with abs disabled, service provider seeking solution.

The left brake lights on my 2002 toyota highlander limited edition 4 wheel drive do not work.i changed the bulbs and they still do not work.i have researched possible causes and found hundreds of other consumers have had the same problems.this is a dangerous defect in that it arose suddenly, for no reason, and compromises the safety of the vehicles ability to warn other drivers that the car is braking.i am disappointed that toyota has not recalled the car for what appears to be a significant malfunction.

2002 toyota highlander. Consumer states brake failure causing an accident *tgwthe consumer stated the brake failure caused her to roll down a hill and flipping over three times. She was trapped upside down in the vehicle.

Consumer was driving 30mph and slammed on brakes to avoid a collision.anti-lock brake system did not work properly.consumer heard a grinding noise, and vehcile skidded and collided with another vehicle.consumer had about 5 car lengths between his vehicle andother vehicle.

In 30 mph highway traffic, several cars stopped suddenly.i quickly stomped on the brake pedal.it seemed like the wheels locked up, especially the left front (like skating on ice and applying your toe pick (brake)). The vehicle would not stop.came very close to hitting the person in front of me and getting hit from behind.there is no driver control of the brakes in sudden stops.this has happened more than once and is very scary.

The sun visor on the driver side of our 2002 toyota highlander falls down when you are driving along.it is extremely dangerous since you never know when the visor will drop down and obstruct your view.there have been a few occasions when i have been driving along and reach to put the turn signal on.at that moment the visor drops down and before i can recover i am close to hitting a car from the rear.i have tried simple solutions but the dealer indicates that nothing is wrong and it will cost over $700 to fix.

I purchased a used 2002 toyota highlander 3 years ago, last year, the visor on the drivers side started flipping down (will not stay up).i have been quoted approx $700 to replace the visor which seems excessive especially since it is not even lighted.

On extremely sunny days, the instrument panel was impossible to read.ph

I have a complaint about my 2002 toyota highlander.the driver side sun visor has a problem staying up and my local toyota dealership has quoted me a price to replace the part that seems extremely high.this visor is the homelink visor.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander.the driver and passenger mud flaps have cracked.the flaps have not been replaced. The dealer stated that they will not replace the mud flaps for free.the failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 89,000.

While in motion and going over 45 mph, with the back windows down and all other windows up, there is severe turbulance that occurs within the vehicle.the turbulence creates pain to the ears which could distract the driver causing an accident.*jg

2002 toyota highlander drivers side sun visor fell down when hitting a small pothole, obscuring driver vision...narrowly averting a collision with oncoming vehicle before i could get it pushed back up into place, whereupon it fell again and i had to swing it out of the way to drive home...no friction to hold it up out of the way....called dealership...sorry...600 dollar replacement w/ homelink..no other fix available...definite design, absolute safety flaw...went online to research and noted thousands of responses to this exact problem for 2002 vehicle.i truly believe a recall is warranted.

1. Plastic tension coil holding up visor failed all of the sudden.2. Plastic tension coil holding up visor failed causing the visor to fall down obstructing my vision while driving. This occurs anytime i hit a bump in the road while driving.3. I went to toyota to have it fixed and they told me it would cost a significant amount of money since there hadn't been any recall notices involving the described failure.

Safety issue with toyota 2002 highlander.the driver's side sun visor repeatedly falls down obscuring vision of the road leading to potential accidents.

The driver side sun visor (w/ lighted mirror and homelink) on my2002 toyota highlander will not stay up and drops down when driving which is a serious hazard.i understand that this is a very common problem with this vehicle and the cost for only the replacement part is over $700.00.it is obviously a design issue and serious hazard that toyota will not address.

Safety issue with toyota highlander (02 model)...sun visor on drivers side keeps falling down and obstructing view.

While traveling on highway with the windows down, there is a vibration and trembling noise, the dealership is aware of the problem. Nlm

We cannot read the instrument panel of our 2002 toyota highlander in the bright arizona sun when wearing sunglasses (a safety and medical requirement in arizona that is to wear sun glasses in the very bright late spring to early fall sun).we have driven at least 100 different cars and trucks (many of them rental vehicles) over the years and never experienced nor expected this problem when we purchased our 2002 highlander.during the bright sunny days in central arizona (it is sunny here over 300 days a year), it is impossible to read any instruments (speedometer, temp gage, fuel gage, odometer, and tachometer) when the sun is coming in the windshield and the driver is wearing sunglasses.obviously this is a severe safety hazard.i have repeatedly contacted the dealer, the dealer service department, and toyota on this extreme safety hazard since acquiring the vehicle in february 2002.in consideration for toyota and its reputation, i avoided contacting cu and the national highway traffic safety administration to allow time for toyota to respond to this safety issue.my patience ended with the beginning of another season of very bright sunshine in arizona.the dealer and toyota factory representatives told me as recently as may 14, 2003 that there is nothing that toyota can do, since there are not enough complaintsor perhaps any other than mine (perhaps many people don't look at their dash instruments when they drive).however, the service manager at a local dealership tells me that other arizona highlander owners have complained, but that there is nothing that he can do about the reported problem.he agrees with my assessment of the problem.how can he not agree when it is so evident by setting in the vehicle with the bright arizona sun coming through the windshield while wearing sunglasses?

2002 toyota highlander driver's side visor falls down and blocks the vision of the driver. Toyota's solution to this problem is to replace the visor at a cost of $600 plus labor. There have been many reports of this problem according to the toyota dealer, yet toyota has not issued a recall.

I have a 2002 toyota highlander.the sun visors on the driver and passenger sides no longer stay up.this started nine months ago.if the sun visor does stay up, it drops down when the vehicle hits a mild bump.

The sun visors on my 2002 toyota highlander are both failing.the driver side visor failed after about 2 years.i took it to the dealership and they replaced it under warranty.now it is failing again.the passenger side visor is now failing as well.according to my mechanic, the cost to replace them would be about $1,000 - parts only.

Driver side visor will not stay in place, drops down due to vibration.appears to be a design flaw. Visor too heavy for armiture, dealership cost to replace approximately 800.00.

The sun visor on the driver side will not stay in place. This is a major safety hazard as it falls into the driver's line of site while the vehicle is in motion.

Drivers side sun visor in '02 toyota highlanderwill not stay up.the passenger side is starting to fail as well.this is a consistent problem.

2002 toyota highlander.driver side sun visor does not stay up, drops down while driving due to any small bumps. Often drops and temporarily blocks view while driving.from web searches sounds like a common issue with the 02 highlanders.

A major water leak was found in the front passenger side due to the front cowl panel not being installed correctly. In addition there is now a mold/mildew smell that the dealer can not get out of the vehicle. They have run the vehicle through the ozone system several times but it has not corrected the problem.

On two occasions while driving the sunlight would shine through the front passenger side window, reflecting off the shiny wood like panel over the glove compartment blinding the driver, this occured for over an hour on both occasions, consumer tried and held newspapers and road maps against the window to block the sun rays, but the trim in the car was too long and recaptured the sunlight as the highway curved, manufacturer has been notified of this design flaw.the consumer is requesting information in writing, from the design engineer of toyota, and feels that this warrants an immediate design change due to vehicle hazard.*scc

Sun visors on 2002 toyota highlanders did not stay in position and interfered with driver visibility- the sun visors will not stay in the up position and will drop down into the driver's eyes while driving.furthermore, the sun visors were rendered useless as they will not stay in position when in use.the driver is forced to either not use the visor, a hazard when driving into the sun, or must slump down in the seat and use the visor in the completely down position.both the passenger and driver's visors are affected.this was a known issue with 2002 highlanders as documented on owner's web forums.

While trying to stop a grinding noise was heard, and vehicle did not stop right away.the cause of the problem has not been determined.

This strut attaches to the rear axle and prevents it from moving forward. It rusted out and was bouncing on the road and hitting the car and rear tire. I had to stop and get it repaired immediately for fear of damaging the tire or car. Upon mechanic making repair the other strut on the opposite side of the car fell off in his hand. If both strut had failed there would have been nothing to stop the rear axle from moving forward and causing a castrophe accident. Or if the bouncing strut lodge in the rear tire the same could have been true. The new replacement parts look inadequate for such a critical component. Should not have happened in under 10 years. Car get washed once ever two weeks. From my perspective part looks the metal bracket at the end of the rod is way to thin for this critical component. Part #48780-4802012398.

Complete tire number is dot m65lb3dtl3901, and is being safe kept by goodyeardistributor.vehicle was -thank god- parked for about half an hour and when i returned to it the front passenger side tire was flat.the car did not even hit a pothole all day long and out of the blue i had aflat.after filling it with fix a flat i drove for some two miles to repair it.at first the mechanicfound nothing suspicious other than the smallest of nails but after removig it and patching the hole he attempted to fill it backwhen he realized the tire was losing air very fast.the outside wall of the tire was cracked from the inside out.the tire was taken to the goodyear distributor yesterday and not only did they insist there is no guarantee on the tire since it is not a manufacturing defect but that the problem poses a safety risk.i most certainly do not agree and hope you do to.the distributoragreed to hold the tire until the proper authorities had the opportunity to take alook at it, if they so desired.there is clearly a manufacturing problem.needless to say,my wife and i are very concerned for our gradson's safety,. Please take a look at it before lifes are lost. Thank you.

Both sun visors on my 2002 toyota highlander have come loose due to a manufacturing defect. They will fall while driving and obscurethe driver's vision, creating a safety issue. Nothing has been done to correct this problem.

Extreme air pressure when drivingabove 35 mph, and either rear windows are open.it feels as though riding in an airplane. It makesears feel funny.

Drivers side sun visor fall down into drivers view without warning, blocking the drivers view and creating a serious safety issue. The drivers visor will not stay in place on my 2002 toyota highlander. There is no visible defect with the visor and no damage to the vehicle that caused this problem to start. Judging from the web site "http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/highlander/47694-sun-visor-problem/" there are a lot of people with this problem. Cost to replace the visor with home link garage door opener in it costs over $600, causing many people to try many different poor methods of fixing this safety problem.

Letter from congressman cartwright on behalf of constituent re toyota concerns.2002 toyota highlander. The consumer stated when she attempted to trade the vehicle, she was informed the vehicle was included in the federal cash for clunker program, and there was potential odometer fraud.

The driver's side sun visor does not stay in place. At first occurrence, the visor would slowly droop down with normal vibrations in the car and required repeated taping of the visor back into place with the driver's hand (a distraction and hazard as is). As time went on the visor loosened completely and does not stay up at all. This is very dangerous and distracting as it blocks full vision out of the windshield by the driver. This seems to be a defect of the visor itself by the manufacturer as it seems as if the visor is too heavy to stay in the upright position. This seems to be a common issue among this make and model and seems as if there should have been a recall regarding this issue long ago.

Dt: the contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The vehicle had 49,000 miles on it when he purchased it. Recently he received aletter from the motor vehicle division which stated that the mileageon the vehicle was incorrect.the previous owner had 84,000 miles on it.the previous owner of the vehicle was a leasing company. The motor vehicle division told the contact to fill out a form and they will correct the mileage. The contact wasunhappy because he purchased this vehicle thinking he had 49,000 miles not 84,000 miles.the previous owner had purchased the vehicle on 1-22-05 , and the odometer read 84,045 miles. The contactpurchased it on 2-19-05 and the odometer showed 49,345 miles.

The ac likes to blow hot air when in the max ac setting and the temp knob being in the coldest position. Nut being the temp setting gauge comes loose causing the ac to blow hot air.happens anytime if parked or driving.

When you open the rear passenger window(s) there is severe, loud and painful-to-the-ear turbulence inside the vehicle at any speed.it can be somewhat, but not totally, alleviated by opening other vehicle windows.if you persist with the rear windows down at speed, it feels like you are physically damaging your ears.

I purchased an additional security device. If someone breaks a window, an alarm is supposed to go off. You can test to see if it works by hitting your car key against a closed window & the alarm should go off. It has never worked. At time of purchase the dealership removed thecenter floor glove compartment assembly. The microphone had fallen off the side & was laying on the floor. They glued it back to the sides & it still didn't go off when hitting a key against the window when all the windows were closed. They couldn't get it to work & breaking my windshield was not an option - obviously. The dealership had no idea on how to fix it.

Passenger and driver sun visors fall down while driving posing a safety hazard. Had the visors replaced april 2006, three years later, having the same problem

Tow receiver hitch disconnected from vehicle while towing small boat trailer.fortunately no one was injured but accident could have caused serious injuries if trailer overturned on interstate. Accident caused by a design defect in the pin assembly that holds hitch to vehicle.the pin retainer can become dislodged as vehicle vibration causes it to ride up over brackets that hold hitch to vehicle.this vehicle was purchased as a tow vehicle but it clearly can not be used as such due to this manufacturer design defect.since most toyota highlanders are sold in the new england area with the factory tow package. This defect could lead to other serious accidents.dt

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The driver stated that the vehicle suddenly accelerated and crashed into a wall of his garage while driving approximately 5 mph. There were no injuries. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealership who was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The current mileage was approximately 48,690. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.

From a stopped position on a side street, i pressed the accelerator to pull onto a main street.because traffic on the main street moves rather fast, i accelerated somewhat above normal, but in no way excessive.after getting into my lane, i backed off the accelerator, but the engine acted as if i was flooring it and the car continued accelerating.it was scary.i pushed hard on the break.the car still accelerated.i stepped on the hand brake.it continued to accelerate.finally, i took the car out of drive and into neutral.the engine continued to scream, but i was able to stop at the side of the road.at some point the engine did come down to normal idle, but i was so shaken, i really don't know when that happened.fortunately no one was ahead of me, the road is straight and level, etc.aside from shattered nerves, there was no harm done.but i can imagine all kinds of horrible outcomes had conditions been different.the car acted as if the accelerator stuck all the way down, however i know i didn't press it down that far.later my husband drove the car home from where i stopped it.with the car off, my husband inspected the accelerator pedal pressing it with his hand and letting it back up.there is a point about half way back up where the mechanism is not smooth.the pedal comes all the way back up, but something inside catches and causes lots of gas to flow into the engine.at least one time he was able to reproduce the problem with the car in park.i am afraid to ever drive it again.this time i was lucky, but i shutter to think.if someone had been in one of the crosswalks.if i had been approaching a red light.when might this happen again?

Engaged from park to drive and suddenly acceleration happened, damaging many other cars. Dealer notified.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact was driving 60 mph when the vehicle suddenly accelerated without any warning. The contact depressed the brake pedal but the vehicle failed to stop. The contact had to completely turn off the engine in order to get the vehicle to stop. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who diagnosed that the accelerator cable was stuck in the forward position and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 210,000.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact was driving 5 mph into a parking garage when suddenly, the vehicle accelerated. She attempted to engage the brake pedal to stop the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The contact notified the insurance company and they covered the repair cost. The contact was sore after the crash occurred due to minor injuries. Three weeks ago while parking the vehicle it surged forward and hit another vehicle. The manufacturer was notified and stated that they would send someone to inspect the vehicle and if there was something wrong with the vehicle they would reimburse her in 35 days. The contact is concerned about the safety risk and chose to rent a vehicle to drive. The failure mileage was 62,000. The current mileage was 75,000.

Vehicle was in motion on a city street going straight slightly downhill and then uphill. The weather was clear. Speed was about 15-25 mph. I was braking to slow the car down but the car accelerated on its own ( toyota calls it "unintended acceleration").the car continued accelerating even though i was pressing the brakes as hard as i could and it was now going uphill..to avoid crashing i put the car in neutral, and engaged the emergency brake and hazards. The engine raced in neutral and then stopped racing.. Toyota started a case file and inspected it.they said everything is working properly now, case closedand i can come get the car.i had it towed there and am afraid to drive it until something is fixed.it was a terrifying experience. I am concerned it could happen again or to other cars.i am thoroughly disappointed in toyota's nonchalant attitude; it was-is a potentially fatal situation, and it seems that according to toyota if such an accident was investigated nothing would show up.

Sometime in 2006, my 2002 toyota highlander experienced unintended acceleration.i was standing on the brake to make the car stop and it wouldn't. I pulled into a parking lot through the car into neutral, hit the brake, then through it into park while it was still moving. I called jiffy lube who just had performed an oil change. They sent a technician over to look at it.when i started the car for the tech the engine continued to race. We both looked to see if there was something stuck under the accelerator. There was not.we both pulled up on the accelerator and it did not appear to be stuck.the tech couldn't explain it.i can't recall if i had the car towed to toyota or if the problem stopped suddenly and i drove myself. Toyota is one mile from where the incident occurred.toyota told me they couldn't replicate the problem and assured me that it wouldn't happen again.i drove him without incident until i pulled in my driveway, the car accelerated and i again had to throw the car into park while moving.the car was then towed to toyota and we were told the problem was "fixed" and given some excuse that didn't make sense.it never happened again and we traded the car for a new one in 2008.the dealership was bob rohrman toyota in westmont, il.i think the recall needs to go back further to include 2002 vehicles.

While pulling into a parking area, and whenconsumer depressed the brakesvehicle surged forward.while trying to control the vehicle and avoid pedestrians vehicle collided with a cement pole in the parking lot.consumer suffered severehead and knee injuries.the police issued areport on the collision.

I bought a 2002 toyota highlander limited in may 2008. The car had just under 60,000 miles on the odometer. This car is my second car, mainly to be used to tow my horse trailer. Within a month of owning the car it showed the sudden unexpected acceleration. This was not unfamiliar to me because i also own a 2002 toyota camry. I have owned the highlander now for 1 and 3/4 year and the car has showed the described behavior off and on. It happens mostly on the freeway and mostly when i am not towing. It does not have anything to do with floormats or sticky gaspedals. Since the same behavior happens in both toyota's i own, it is time that toyota starts looking at something else than the silly explanations of floormats and sticky gaspedals. It is the engine which runs away, leaving the driver no control over the speed. I had not expect this from toyota. I bought toyotas because of their reliability and because i trusted the company (as opposed to ford, which i also owned and experienced a problem which turned out the company knew a long time about and did not do anything about).i guess toyota is not different. Also, it is time that the recall goes further back then the 3-4 years. I even have a copy of a professional car review of the camry who experienced the problem in 2002.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander ltd (n/a). While driving 60 mph and speeding to 70 mph to pass another vehicle, the accelerator pedal stuck and would not release. The passenger removed the floor mats but the vehicle continued to accelerate rapidly. The contact maneuvered the vehicle to the side of the road by depressing the brake pedal firmly, shifting into neutral and turning the engine off. The rpms continued to increase excessively. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the throttle body had carbon and built up corrosion which caused the failure. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance as the vehicle was too old, too high in mileage and no longer under warranty. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 218,000.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. While starting the vehicle he heard a loud noise, and the rpms rapidly increased for approximately 15 seconds before the rpms decreased. The current mileage is 23,500. Updated 03/12/10. *ljupdated 07/12/10

2002 toyota highlander accelerator sticking in the full down position when passing another vehicle.first happened summer of 2008.second time this happened august 13, 2009.put on full brake and turned ignition key off.after vehicle stopped, about 5-10 seconds, pedal released.service appointment with dealership august 18, 2009 to correct problem.dealership could not find anything wrong with vehicle.said it was the floor mat that made the accelerator stick in the open position.don't think toyota informed of this complaint.since toyota recall has taken place, i wanted to get my vehicle back in the dealership to correct my problem.appointment made 2/09/10 at 10:30 with dealership.dealership checked throttle body and throttle cable.said all okay.dealership continues to tell me rubber mat could catch pedal and cause problem.i disagree with this diagnosis.i asked dealership to please inform toyota about this problem in my model since the recall is only correcting 2010 models. The only way i will try and pass another vehicle now, especially on mountain roads, is place the car in second gear and accelerate.i don't trust placing the pedal down to floorboard.i offer this as additional information regarding this dangerous problem.i hope toyota will correct this situation in "all" models of their cars.

I pulled into my garage during early afternoon and came to the usual stop facing the wall. My foot was still on the brake and i had not yet put the car into park. Suddenly the car lurched forward and hit the wall with great enough force to deploy the air bag. The bag fractured my sternum in two places. At the time i was not aware of the prevalence of unintended acceleration problems and did not report it. There have been no episodes since.

Failure of drivers side and passenger side sun visors to stay in their non- use position.both visors fall without assistance and block vision causing a safety issue.

Shortly after the expiration of the manufacturer's warranty, my 2002 toyota highlander began experiencing the following problem. The sun visors on both the driver and passenger side has become loose and opens up when the vehicle travels over even the slightest bump on the road.the unexpected dropping of the sun visors in the driver's field of vision is at best distracting and at worst accident causing.local toyota dealership wants to charge $600 to replace just the driver's side sun visor. I believe that toyota should recall my vehicles and others with similar problems and replace the dangerously defective sun visors free of charge.

Both sun visors on my 2002 toyota highlander have come loose due to a manufacturing defect. They will fall while driving and obscurethe driver's vision, creating a safety issue. Nothing has been done to correct this problem.

2002 toyota highlander: both driver's side and passenger side sunvisors will not stay in up position. The visors drop without warning multiple times every day since the problem began to occur. This is a safety hazard as the driver's side sunvisor randomly drops down without warning completely obscuring the driver's vision.reported the defect to my toyota dealer and they informed me that the only option was to pay for replacements at a cost of several hundred dollars each. This assessment was given without any inspection of the vehicle and in a manner which strongly implied that this was a problem which they were very familiar with. After speaking to toyota, i decided to research this for myself on the web and found many similar incidents. This is clearly a dangerous design defect and needs to be remediated by the manufacturer urgently before someone's family is killed because the visor drops and blocks their view of the traffic ahead.

My highlander limited 2002 has a design flaw. The sun visor on the driver's side keeps falling down under road load obstructing field of vision. The sunglass holder does the same thing. Toyota needs to make a recall on these items and fix them.

I have a 2002 toyota highlander and both sun visors will not stay up. This is creating a safety hazard when they fall down and blocks my view while i am driving. What's it going to take - someone getting killed before toyota will admit that the visor is too heavy and needs to be corrected. Seems with all the negative publicity that they have received lately that they would do what is right and correct the problem on all their vehicles with this problem. I know that it would be costly but it is their product and they should be willing to do the right thing.

We have a 2002 toyota highlander which we purchased new in april 2002.the vehicle has about 39,000 miles.for the past 3 years the driver's side sun visor suddenly falls down and partially obstructs the driver's vision.it falls down at slow speed when the vehicle goes over bumps.it falls down on the interstate at highway speeds from vibrations - such as expansion joints in the road.it is usually just annoying but once in awhile it is very dangerous such as when your are passing on a two lane road it will suddenly drop down obstructing the driver's vision.i have looked on line and found this is a very common problem with the 2002 highlander.and it is very expensive to fix if you have the garage door remote built into the visor - as we do.about an $800 repair - with the majority of the cost being the part.i think this is a safety issue and these defective visors should be replaced by toyota.i don't know the exact date or mileage when this part started to fail so i estimated both.

The driver side visor does not stay propped up in the forward direction. It drops down to a vertical position downwards, where it blocks the driver's view.

My 2002 limited toyota highlander has a sun visor that wont stay up. It is the driver side and i am very concern especially when hitting mild road bumps it falls down. I am holding it with velcro and i have to change that every other month. This is a safety problem and would appericate if someone can look into it. I looked at the online forums for highlanders and they are reporting the same problem.

2002 highlander driver side sun visor falls down unexpectedly while driving and at times will not remain in the up position, thus hindering view at times.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving various speeds, the sun visor on both the driver and passenger side will not lock and falls down into the occupant's view limiting visibility.the dealer determined the rod within the visors were fractured and needed to be replaced.the manufacturer was not alerted.updated 9/13/2006 - the manufacturer has been contacted.the manufacture advised the consumer to contact the dealer.the dealer determined that there was no method to repair the visors and that they had to be replaced.

Sun visor, when flipped forward as far as it could go, would immediately drop down to a vertical position, thus blocking my view.i had to bend down to peek below the sun visor.

2002 toyota highlander.driver's side sun visor does not stay up or down.while trying to make it work properly i am distracted from my primary duty of driving the vehicle.toyota does not recognize this a safety or recall issue.cost to replace $1000.00.if you check the internet this is not an isolated problem and has been ignored by toyota for many years.

Driverside visor flops down.i was told by the watertown and lexington toyota service depts that this was a unique problem to my car. Now i hear that other toyota highlander 2002 owners are having the same problem.i found the flopping so distracting that i took the sunvisor off.

1. Regular driving causes the issue which seems to be due to poor product design. 2. The driver side sun visor does not stay in the upright position ever, and continuously blocks my clear view of the road. 3. The toyota dealer was informed and they did nothing to fix their inferior product. I have to purchase a replacement sun visor.

Driver's side sun visor keeps falling down suddenly while driving. While searching online, i found out that many 2002 highlander owners have the same problem. Repair is too costly. It is definitely a safety hazard.

Toyota highlander sun visor does not stay in place and suddenly drops down; impairing driver's vision.

2002 toyota highlander has issue with driver's side sunvisor that constantly falls obstructing vision.

Driver side visor will not stay up, keeps falling down and distracting me.the problem is inside the visor, i rarely use the visor, but it does have the homelink garage door opener, which i use daily.

My 2002 highlander also had the floppy visor syndrome when out of warranty.cost to replace was $660 but north kingstown toyota did a courtesy replacement at no charge.all who have paid for this repair should consider a class action suit against toyota for ignoring another safety problem.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact stated that approximately two years ago he noticed that the drivers side sun visor would fall and obscure his vision whiledriving. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who advised him that it needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.updated 09/21/11*ljthe consumer also stated the passenger side visor failed as well. Updated 09/28/11

My 2002 toyota highlander driver's side sunvisor will fall down unexpected blocking my view for a few seconds.for safety reasons, i cannot use my visor as i bungy cord it to stay up. But another safety issue now is there noprotection from the bright sun or snow.

Sun visor keeps coming down as it affects my vision on the road.

2002 toyota highland flip visor keeps on falling down.after research from the net, apparently, there are many others that experience this issues.this is very dangerous.it will costs $700.00 to replace it.i really think this is a defect.

Driver's side sun visor will not stay in position.it will only hang straight down, blocking the view of the driver.visor has not been used in any unusual manner - the tension in the visor is simply gone.

The sun visor on my toyota highlander 2002 doesn't remain in place. It started last year and no matter what i do it keep on falling. I believe this is a design problem and a safety hazard that needed to be addressedor fixed by toyota corporation.

Driver side sun visor swings down from rest position to block view. We use visor normally until it suddenly gave up and did not stay in any position other than hanging straight down. We do not hang anything on the visor to cause a load. It just simply "hang loose" now. When i (male 5' 11") am driving, the visor would randomly and often flip down right in front of my eyes blocking my view. This would be an equivalence to some one sticking their hands in your face while you drive. This definitely distracts me and causes me to take my eyes off the road. I am afraid that this will eventually cause an accident at any speed. Since we drive long distance with this car, our warranty was over quick and was not covered. I am currently holding it up with velcro just so it would stay out of the way. If it wasn't for the homelink system on it, i would have removed it already. The visor is useless to me since i can not tilt it to block the sun. It can only hang and that it too low for me to drive safely. I do not feel safe driving my little kids in this car and have bought mini van to do so. This is a serious safety issue that nhtsa and toyota should look into correcting. I know there are many others with the same exact issue, but they do not know to voice their concerns here. Please research this defect and have it corrected before some one get hurt or killed. Thank you.

Driver's side sun visor will not stay up. I had to tie the thing into place in order to see out the windshield and now cannot use it when the sun is at a bothersome angle. Very annoying that a part like this should fail.

Driver side sun visor will not stay up. Drops down while driving blocking driver's view of the rode.per toyota dealer, new sun visor required at a cost of $600 plus labor.

I seem to be one of many that is having an issue with the sun visor on a 2002 toyota highlander. The driver side sun visor will no longer stay in place properly. This results in it falling down and blocking the vision of the driver.a recall is needed in order to prevent the potential danger.

Sun visor on my driver side of my 2002 toyota highlander will stay in the up position (against the ceiling).any slight bump in the road causes it fall and block my vision. It's quite a hazard!

Drivers and passenger sun visors fall down obscuring vision when going over slightest bump in the road - there are numerous other complaints regarding this on the tundrasolutions.com website.

Toyota highlander 2002 driver side visor does remain in position.it falls to full downward position, blocking view to road.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander.while driving approximately 45 mph or less, the sun visor would automatically release at any given time.the failure made visibility difficult and occurred without warning.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that the sun visor needed to be replaced at the cost of $700.the contact detached the sun visor from the vehicle.the vehicle has not been repaired.the vin was unknown.the failure and current mileages were 42,000. Driver/s side sun visor will not stay up. While driving, it suddenly drops obscuring my vision and putting the driver at extreme risk for an accident (impaired vision of the road). There is no apparent way to fix this problem short of replacing the sun visor (estimated cost of approx. $700 per blogs). This problem has been experienced by many owners of 2002 highlanders as exemplified via "complaint" postings.

2002 toyota highlander driver side sun visor will randomly fall down, completely blocking the view of the road ahead.on a busy highway, if this falls at the wrong moment, it can result in a severe multi-car accident.

2002 toyota highlander sun visor keeps falling down on its own.noticed that this is a common complaint on the internet.this is a safety hazard and the visor should be recalled.

The driver's side sun visor will not stay up and it is impairing my vision.if i can get it to stay up for a few minutes, it falls unexpectedly into my view, cutting off my line of sight and nearly causing an accident.the only remedy i can see is to remove it, but then i am blinded by the sun.i drive with my child in the vehicle with me and find this to be quite disturbing when it happens.i bought the highlander because of its safety rating, but this is very disappointing.this has been happening for some time, and now the visor just swings in front of me without staying up or forward, out of the way.the date reported below is not the first time this has happened.

2002 toyota highlander driver side sun visor falls down while driving causing a possible hazard.

I have a 2002 toyota highlander that has a driver side visor that will not stay up and a passenger that pops down every time i hit a bump in the road. My dealer wants to split the cost which is over $600 (homelink version) and a less for the passenger side.this problem began 18 months ago when i had only 40,000 miles on the vehicle - just out of manufactures warranty - this also was not covered under my 100000 mile extended warranty.i see many other owners have reported this problem.without the visor it is difficult to drive into the sun at rush hour.also, with it falling down all the time it is dangerous to not leave tied up and unusable.

The sun visor on my 2002 toyota highlander keeps falling down into my sight of vision. I believe toyota and your office should investigate this incident. It is becoming a safety hazard and it is very wide spread on many of toyota vehicles. You only have to search the internet to see how many other complaints they are .

Was driving in rush hour traffic when the driver's side visor on my '02 toyota highlander suddenly dropped down to obscure my vision.this necessitated me hitting my brakes and ducking down to the right of the steering wheel in order to view traffic.there were no "events" leading to malfunction.the visor will no longer remain in the "up" position and poses an ongoing safety hazard as it must either be held in place while driving (forcing the driver to use one hand on the wheel), taped in place (where it will still drop down if/when the tape gives out); or force the driver to lean to the right in order to see around the visor (thus prohibiting the use of the rearview and sideview mirrors(.

Driver's side sun visor has been falling slightly from it's resting position on the headliner. On 4-20-07 the visor fell suddenly all the way downward and fully blocked my view of the road momentarily. I immediately went to my local toyota dealer for advise on this problem. He thought there had been a tsb on the visor but indicated that it was the lexus version that had the bulletin. I do not know this to be a fact. The new visor in my case is cost prohibitive at over 600.00. I am not a safety expert but this seems to be a slam dunk safety issue and not a "i want my visor replaced for free" issue. Clearly a defect involving public safety. I suspect some accidents would get more attention-but why wait for one when this problem is so well documented?

The drivers side sun visor, which has the electronics built in, unexpectedly flops down.it started in 2004 and has progressively gotten worse.toyota wants over $750 to replace it.repair is not offered.it occasionally falls unexpectedly and blocks my vision of traffic lights.however, i didn't consider it a real safety hazard until recently.it fell at an inopportune moment, distracted me, and i was almost envolved in an accident.there is no reason this item should have failed after only 1 1/2 years use and there is no reason a replacement should cost $750.this is a design defect and it is a safety hazard.

2002 toyota highlander drivers side sun visor falls without warning. The visor falls down will not stay up. When this happens your vision is unexpectedly blocked. I have tried securing the visor but nothing helps.

Within a month, both sun visors started falling/rotating on their own.while driving, this can block your vision and not allow a 'full' view of what's ahead of you.the dealership i called just put me through to the 'parts' dept.an email from toyota said it was my problem.the sun visors have seen nothing but "normal" use.

Driver's side sunvisor keeps falling in to my line of vision unexpectedly. It's on my 2002 toyota highlander. It is terrifying when you're on the highway in traffic and it falls!

How many complaints do highlander owners have to submit about sun visors dropping before something done about it. Is toyota going to wait until someone gets in an accident due to it. I have a 2002 highlander and have been trying different things to make the visor stay up for years, with little success.were there any deaths or injuries?no not yet why wait until it happens! 2002 toyota highlander drivers side visor will not stay up. This is the second $850 unit in 2 years. It's annoying, not to mention dangerous when it dropped down unexpectedly and blocked my view through the windshield. Between the visor and the hood of the vehicle, i could see about a 2" strip of asphalt about 10 feet in front of the hood. Very very dangerous!!!!!!

2002 toyota highlander drivers side visor.will not stay in place, never reported until i saw how many people have so here i go.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander.while driving 30 mph or greater, the sun visor dropped to a vertical position when the vehicle vibrated.the failure occurred without warning and made it difficult for the contact to see the road.the dealer stated that the sun visor clips were defective.as of september 4, 2007, the dealer had not repaired the vehicle.the failure mileage was 30,000 and current mileage was 40,000. The consumer stated the sun visor could drop on any vehicle movement such as bumps in the road, or applying the brakes. The sun visor in the vertical position blocks the drivers view of the road. Sun visor problem ... My driver side sun visor will not stay up and has become an hazard.i've also notice the same thing starting to happen to my passenger sun visor, a seat in which is all most never occupied!

I have a 2002 toyota highlander.the sun visors on the driver and passenger sides no longer stay up.this started nine months ago.if the sun visor does stay up, it drops down when the vehicle hits a mild bump.

My 2002 toyota highlander driver's side sun visor continuously falls down and will not stay in place.the passenger side sun visor stays in place if the car isn't moving, but will suddenly fall down unexpectedly when the car is in motion.the dealer says it would cost $600 to replace each visor, but my question is, why should i or any consumer have to pay for a manufacturer default?i have resorted to placing a velcro strip on the ceiling to keep the sun visor in place, which of course prevents me from using the visor at all.

I have a 2002 toyota highlander and the driver's side visor will not stay up.the visor constantly falls in my line of vision.i've had the problem over two years.

Sun visor on my 2002 toyota highlander will frequently fall down without warning.this results in my view of the road being unexpectedly hindered.this could easily result in an accident.this happens frequently - i.e. Almost every time i drive more than 3 miles.

The driver sun visor is very loose and often drops down while driving the vehicle. Sometimes this is just a distraction but can easily cause an accident.

I purchased a 2001 highlander, which the dmv claims is 2002 (despite the fact that toyota sold it to me used as a 2001 highlander). Its sun visor won't stay in place and keeps hanging down, impairing my visibility, mostly the traffic lights. It is extremely dangerous. It costs over $600 to replace the visor without warranty and it really should be done for free, given how many other people i know with the same problem.

The driver's sunvisor does not work. It won't stay in position or even up. The visor just falls down all the time, blocking the driver's view. There are complaints about the same issue with no solutions all over the internet. I tried talking to toyota - they just told me to buy a new $700 visor. But i have known others with this same year/model/make (2002 toyota highlander) of car and even after replacing the visor, they have the same issue.

Driver's side visor fails to stay up.visor seems to be too heavy to support itself.visor falls down due to road vibrations and blocks eye sight for taller drivers.tried simple fixes using velcro and super glue - but all failed when summer interior temperatures caused the glue / adhesive to fail and problem continues.complete replacement seems to be only solution.

The driver's side visor on my 2002 toyota highlander will not stay in the up position and falls into the driver's view when driving over bumps.

Toyota 2002 highlander driver side sun visor keeps falling down and almost caused an accident while i was driving the car.

Sun visor on the driver's side suddenly falls from its normal position during driving blocking the driver's field of vision. That might case an accident.

Both driver and passenger front sun visors become unable to stay in a fixed vertical position.both have started to fall down, which blocks the driver's view. This is a very severe hazard and could cause a wreck.

Sun visor on both driver and passenger sides are defective.they keep falling down and nothing i've tried will keep them in place.this is a major hazard as it could really hurt somebody in an accident.this seems to be a very common problem.see following links:http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/highlander/47694-sun-visor-problem/http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/highlander/47694-sun-visor-problem-2/toyota charges over $600 for the driver's side, which we cannot afford.

The 2002 highlander driver side sun visor drops down and obstructs the driver's view of the roadway. Toyota charges +/- $600.00 for the part alone. There is a blog with toyota owners that demonstrates this problem is very common and is definitely a safety issue.the visor drops every time the car is in use, especially in warm weather.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander.since february of 2007, the sun visor in the vehicle does not attach tightly and comes down while driving 35 mph and above.the vehicle has not been inspected, but the repair would cost over $300.the contact feels that this is a safety issue and the defect should be repaired by the manufacturer.the failure mileage was 95,000.updated 07/01/09updated 07/06/09.

I seem to be one of many that is having an issue with the sun visor on a 2002 toyota highlander. The driver side sun visor will no longer stay in place properly. This results in it falling down and blocking the vision of the driver. So far this has not caused a safety issue but the potential is definitely there.

Sunvisor on 2002 toyota highlander constantly falls down into driver's field of vision.visor was replaced one time under warranty but problem has returned.cost to repair per toyota dealer is $650 for parts plus labor - the visor contains a lighted vanity mirror and a homelink remote control so it is an expensive part to repair.the visor cannot be used in a 'partially lowered' position to block sun or reflections as it constantly falls into the 'fully lowered' position which obstructs the driver's field of view. The only way to keep the visor from sagging into the driver's field of view is to use tape or velcro to attach it to the ceiling.this prevents the visor from being used in the intended manner to block sun or reflections.this is a safety hazard because the driver can't prevent sunlight and glare from diminishing visibility.this increases the chance for accidents or hitting objects or pedestrians in the road.

Approximately six months ago i had a problem with my sun visor randomly flopping down as i was driving, and it would not stay in position when i tried to use the visor to block the sun.the dealer did replace the visor under warranty, but advised me that the part cost over $500 due to the "home link" system in the visor.the visor is once again starting to become loose, and will not stay in position up against the windshield.this is very inconvenient because i have to duck down to see under the visor at traffic signals to see when the light changes.i am also concerned that it will soon start randomly flopping down as i'm driving again.one week ago, the dealer agreed that there was a problem with my visor and this time told me that there was a defective part in the visor, which they replaced.after the repair, the visor stayed in position for only one day.when i returned to the dealership, the advisor told me that there was a defect with the visor on highlanders, and that toyota had corrected the problem with the new models by installing the home link system elsewhere in the vehicle.the service manager, however, insisted that there was no problem with the visor, and that was the way it was supposed to be.after a great deal of discussion, the service manager finally agreed to order a new visor for my verhicle.my concern is that this will be an ongoing battle with the dealership if the problem persists since my vehicle is now out of warranty and the part is expensive.

Sun visor will not stay put - it's in the down position at all times and won't stay up out of the line of sight.

2002 toyota highlander. Sun visor with homelink keeps falling down with hitting minor bumps. Safety hazard, as vision is blocked and can lead to accidents.

Over the past few months the drivers side visor would fall when i press the breaks. Blocking my vision.recently, the visor will not stay up at all, and needs to be taped up to prevent it from falling while i am driving.

2002 toyota highlander - driver side sun visor will not stay in the up position and will not stay in the sun shade position.it falls half way and is right in the line of sight of the driver.this is an extremely unsafe condition.http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/highlander/47694-sun-visor-problem-2/toyota claims that this is a warranty issue.there are many recorded cases of this problem and toyota is not admitting that there is a safety issue.

Submission from constituent re defective visor/ safety problems 2002 toyota highlander ( full document not imaged).the consumer stated about four months ago, the passenger side visor would not remain in the up position, and approximately two weeks later, the same thing happened on the driver's side.

While driving the driver side sun visor falls down after hitting mild bump in road.

I have a 2002 toyota highlander. The sun visors will not stay in the up position. They randomly fall down partially blocking my view and creating a safety hazzard. I originally took it back to the dealer who had it replaced but the same thing kept happening. I went online and discovered that it's not just my 2002 highlander. I've tried velcro but that won't hold it in place. I've had several near accidents on the highway as a result of this issue. It happened again today and i just can't take it anymore.

The driver side visor constantly folds down blocking my vision when i am driving. Visor in loose. This happens all the time. Avoided a few accidents already.

2002 toyota highlander - both driver and passenger sunvisors do not stay up.when placed in the upright position, the sunvisors release over any small bump in the road.

Driver and passenger sun visors fall down into drivers and passenger view. Safety issue was not recognized by vehicle manufacturer.

Driver's side sun visor falling into driver's field of vision when vehicle in operation.2002 toyota highlander limited.occurs constantly and began about three years after the visor was replaced for the same problem.

Driver side visor will not stay in any tilted position after it has been pulled down from its resting "our of the way" position in the roof bracket. Because of the failure of the visor to stay in position it is no longer safe to operate the vehicle while using the visor as it obstructs the driver's view of the road. This condition additionally makes the vehicle unsafe to operate while driving in the direction of the sun as there is no means by which to block the incoming glare from the driver's eyes while the visor is in its "out of the way" position in the roof bracet. The dealer has been made aware of the defect. The replacement cost of the visor is $580.00. I consider this to be a manufacturer design defect of a small inexpensive part contained within a very expensive visor.

Both sun visors on my 2002 toyota highlander limited fall down by themselves.both have the lighted mirror and the river side includes the homelink control.there are no other items attached to the visors.it happens all the time, whether or not i hit a bump in the road.i've added velcro tape to the visors, but the weight of them is too much for the tape to stick to the ceiling, so after a while, the visors fall down again.

2002 toyota highlander limited - the driver and passenger side sun visors will not stay in upright position.very dangerous when driving.toyota offers no solutions but purchasing another $600 visor.looking online, i am not the only one having this problem.at what point does a manufacture become responsible for what is obviously a design defect and safety issue.

Sunvisor on drivers side does not stay up.

Driver-side sun visor keeps falling straight down, and causes nearly no visibility while driving.i have read numerous complaints about this same problem with the '02 highlanders.this should be a recall as it can cause a serious accident.

Safety problem/accident potential:drivers side sun visor problem. Visor does not stay in upright(against the roof) position.when driving, it causes a safety hazard by blocking my view of the road because it falls down into the vertical position.

02 toyota highlander drivers side sun visor drops down while driving$650 for a toyota replacement or $450 at the auto wreckers , many people have the same complaint.

I have a toyota highlander 2002 limited, v6, both sun visors constantly fall down and won't stay up even with heavy duty velcro strips. It is distracting and blocks the drivers view.

My toyota highlander on both the driver and passenger side sun visors drop down while driving.research of this problem indicate others are having the same problem which potentially can cause an accident by blocking vision or disturbing the driver while driving.notified toyota of the problem and got a very prompt standard customer service reply that the warranty has expired and basically it is your problem versus a potential design flaw that may have safety considerations and they at least could of provide assistance to correct the problem other than a replacement at $660.even at that based on the internet that is not a permanent repair since it is a design flaw.apparently this is also a problem with other toyota models.

This is clearly a design flaw & potentially dangerous. The sun visors fail & drop down in front on you, no longer staying at a proper angle or staying up. I cut one open & found that the pivoting pin is coated in plastic & held in place by ametal clip. Over time the plastic cracks & falls off the metal pin causing the loss of the required friction to holdthe visor securely in place.my 1st repair was to reform the pin with epoxy, but the force from the metal clip was too much and it failed in a few months. The next fix was to cut the visor open again & force the part of the pin still covered in the original plastic coating deeper into themetal clip. That repair lasted until now. The replacement parts are ridiculously expensive, but nowi can not repair it and not doing so would be a driving hazard. From what i have read online this is a common problem and toyota should have done something by now.

Sun visor on driver's side of 2002 toyota highlander can't be used to protect driver from the bright sunlightas it cannot be ratcheted up or adjusted and just hangs looselyblocking driver's view of window and requiring driver to hold it in place with one hand. Problem has existed almost from beginning. Others have reported similar problems especially with that model year.

2002 highlander visor does not stay in position, tends to fall down when it should be up.

2002 toyota highlander driver side sun visor continually falls down while driving.serious safety issue because when it happens it blocks the drivers view unexpectedly.

I have a problem with the sun visors on my 2002 highlander. The visors seem overly heavy and due to the normal vibrations in the car they frequently fall down, which is quite disconcerting when driving! i've talked to toyota but they mention there is no way to adjust the tension and i'm going to have to pay 700.00 to get them fixed. I'm concerned as it looks to be a design fault (i.e. Both visors are falling down, due to the weight of the things) and i don't want to pay for new ones to be in exactly the same situation in 18 months time. I have researched the problem on the internet aand many people are reporting this problem with toyota highlanders.

Sun visors fall down while driving. At any given time while driving both sunvisors will fall completely down obstructing view of the road ahead. Very dangerous.toyota will not recall.

When driving the 2002 highlander, the driver side visor dropped down and hit the driver on the nose and obstructed vision of the road.toyota replaced the visor once years before, but will not do so again because it is out of warranty.no repair is possible, so it must be replaced at a cost of more than $800.00 for the visor (with garage door opener) part only.the visor is now falling down due to a poor hinge, and is a constant hazard. Many other owners of the same toyota report the same problem.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander.the contact stated that the drivers side sun visor would continue to fall. The failure was recurring.the vehicle was taken to a dealer, who stated that the sun visor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired.the manufacturer was not notified of the defect.the approximate failure mileage was 124,000.

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the driver and passenger side sun visors would release downwardly without intent when the vehicle was stationary or in motion. The sun visors would be placed in the upward position upon releasing. The failure occurred intermittently and temporarily distorted the visibility. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and an independent mechanic, who both stated that the entire sun visor would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

Sun visor on driver's side unexpectedly falls down.i have almost rear ended a few vehicles on the highway and surface streets due to this problem. This is a recurring problem for me and is getting more and more serious. I see that there have been several complaints on this issue for this year toyota highlander.how many complaints does nhtsa/toyota have to receive before this is considered a safety issue?how many deaths?i was quoted $750 by a toyota dealership to have the visor replaced.

The drivers side sun visor no longer stays fully up. It stays 1/2 down which blocks visibility.it suddenly falls down further, blocking my view even more, especially when i brake (even light braking), change lanes or change vehicle speeds. After several times of getting scared when the visor suddenly flips down, i now have to use bungee cords or rubber bands to hold the visor up so that i can see.unfortunately, that means that i cannot easily flip it down to block the sun, which is its purpose, and i live in "sunny california!"i have seen dozens of other people complain online falls about this safety issue over the past few years.my research a few years ago showed that the replacement for the visor was ridiculously over $800 (i think because it has a lighted mirror).my assumption is that it only needs a spring replaced and toyota should do this to protect its customers.

Driver side visor will not stay in place, drops down due to vibration.appears to be a design flaw. Visor too heavy for armiture, dealership cost to replace approximately 800.00.

Sun visor does not stay in position.it rotates down to a vertical position, obstructing driver's view and will not stay in horizontal position against cabin ceiling.

The driver's side sun visor will not stay down when pushed into place to block bright sun.instead, it moves partially back up, thereby obscuring the driver's vision. There are numerous reports of the same problem in other 2002 and 2003 toyota highlanders.toyota's response is simply that the car is out of warranty, and we are welcome to pay $850 for a new visor (it is so expensive because it contains a garage door opener remote control).this is a safety issue.here is more info from others with the same problem http://www.fixya.com/cars/t594661-highlander_problem_sun_visor.

This is the fourth sun visor on the drivers side of this car which will no longer stay up blocking my vision while driving. The first was replaced 09/03 at about 22,600 miles under warranty with a home link included as was the original. The second replacementwas 01/07 at 65,300 miles and the passenger one was replaced at the same time. These did not have the home link feature as it was too expensive. The problem recurred in 3/10at 86,000 miles and was once again replaced. It is now 3/16 with 115,000 miles and the same problem as before exists. It falls right at eye level which impairs visibility. With the number of complaints toyota has received on this and other models, a mandatory replacement is warranted.

Driver side visor has 2 positions only. Down or up. Cannot adjust for taller drivers.

The sun visor will not stay in the up position. Toyota replaced the visors under warranty after the first occurrence. However, they are not staying up anymore. The drivers side visor falls down when driving creating a safety hazard. Both of them fall down at an angle which could cause head injuries during a crash. In doing an internet search, it appears this is an issue with many other highlanders. I went back to toyota and they would not replace it under warranty.

The air bag sensor stay on when cold. It will not turn off until car worms up and engine is shut down and restart.the sun visor will not stay on and it is falling down during driving.both issues are safety hazard

The contact owns a 2002 toyota highlander. The contact stated that the driver's side sun visor bracket failed. The sun visor detached from the bracket and obstructed the contact's view of the roadway. The dealer had previously replaced the sun visor bracket however, the failure was not corrected. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 140,000.

While driving both sun visors fall unexpectedly and block vision. This has been a problem from the get-go and we had these replaced already and just over a year later the problem is occurring again.

Please include and consider this complaint in your upcoming meeting.re:design defect heated air from venting systemtoyota highlanderi am an owner of the 2002 model.the air from the air venting systemis always heated.recently, the local dealer confirmed my findings. The air exiting from the venting system is unnecessarily heated foran added 6 to 9 degrees.the cabin is 6- 9 degrees hotter than theoutside. This is a design defect.their explanation is that the airvent duct pulls air through next to the engine. And in the processheated the vented air.i was told to use the air conditioning systemto solve this problem.however,i am puzzled by this designdeficiency. Due to this design defect, i am wasting ac and fuelefficiency.please help me look into this problem. F. Fungsan francisco, california.

Failure of 55904-48210 hvac controller on a 2002 toyota highlander. The failure of this part cause the heating and cooling control dial to become inoperative.the vehicle could only blow cold air causing my windshield to fog over.this resulted in my being unable safely operate the vehicle.

The hot/cold knob in my 2002 toyota highlander is not working properly.i researched and called toyota they said there are no recalls on it and they only issue them according to how many parts are sold to repair that vehicle. I looked online and alot of people that own the same year and model of my suv are complaining about the same issue.toyota quoted me $805 to repair it when i went in to the service department.he said they have had alot of complaints about the same issue and had already repaired a couple.when i went in to have it looked at i had heat, when i came out i didn't.they told me i had to fix it and there was nothing else i could do.i called the manager of this particular dealership and he told me to bring my car back in and they could set it to heat.why didn't they return my car in the same order it was in when i brought it to themin the first place.

The temperature control know in our 2002 toyota highlander is not working correctly.the vents blow cold air when the dial is set to the hottest setting.it is very hard to keep the ice from forming on our windows when we don't have hot air blowing.the ice storms in missouri occur fairly frequently and hot air blowing in the defrost position usually keeps the windshield warm enough to keep it clear.however, without the hot air, the windshield ices up immediately and makes driving very dangerous.there are many people having this problem.this is one of the sites that describes the issue and all the people with the same problem http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forums/highlander/32217-heater-quit-sort-of/

Consumer states that there is a loud noise that comes into the vehicle once the consumer opens any of the rear windows with out opening the front windows. The noise is so loud that it hurts the consumer's ears. Contacted dealer. Mr

Consumer states that when rear windows are down, the vehicle experiences very bad turbulence that is "deafening".this occurs at any speed. Ts

This is a 4-door model. When front windows are closed and rear door windows are lowered it sounds like an airplane flew over the back seat; noise created is horrendous. You cannot continue driving with the noise. Rolling down "a" front window eliminates the problem. I can't imagine the consequences of someone having a dog in the back seat and rolling down a rear window so they don't mess up the glass.

When driving highlander at speed of 25 phr or more with rear windows down and front windows up, air entering cabin space causes high vibrations that make hearing impared. And ear drums uncomfortable for all passengers. The first time this occurred , i was driving with my infant son.i was not expecting to experince what came next once i partially lowered the rear windows.i was worried,i might have damaged my infants sons ear drums.

Driver's side sun visor on the 2002 toyota highlander will not stay up.it falls down on a regular basis ,and sometime falls down while driving, momentarily, obstructing my view of the road ahead.dealershipsquoted me a cost upwards of $600, parts only,to replace it,and i didn't and have never used the homelink feature, which apparentlywas largely responsible for the relatively high cost of repair.

When both rear side windows are rolled down, sound is deafening. Dealer was aware of the problem, there was nothing he could do. Consumer was told it was a design flaw and that it could not be corrected.to control the noise consumer has to open the moon roof or the front windows.*jg

While driving a toyota highlander, that we leased on 01/08/2002, we noticed that the vehicle has a problem: when the windows on the rear doors are lowered, the vehicle makes a very loud turbulance noise and vibration occurs, that makes the vehicle difficult to steer. On 01/12/2002, accompanied by my brother-in-law,we visited toyota of cerritos, where i had leased the toyota highlander, and advised them of this problem.the sales manager dale pogoda, said " they have received many complaints in regards to all of the toyota highlanders and it is manufacturers defect, and that all that they are worried about is getting the vehicles off there lot".i have contacted the customer service manager at toyota of cerritos, crown toyota's service department, toyota regional office case no. 200201160431, and followed the arbitration process.they advised us that this is a normal condition of the toyota highlander due to the shape of the vehicle.i have driven many suv's like the dodge durango, ford expedition and chevy tahoe's.and none of these vehicles have this problem, i feel that i have a true issue that needs to be addressed before an vehicle accident occurs due to this problem.thank you for your time.

The windshield wipers became stuck and caused poor visibility.the driver had to get out of the vehicle and move the arms but they still didn't work.the dealer had been contacted for repair.*nlmph
