A vehicle was traveling very slowly on a rural interstate as my toyota fj cruiser approached in the same lane.the driver of the fj cruiser braked quickly to avoid hitting the slow moving vehicle.however, an 18-wheeler behind it could not stop fast enough.it rear-ended my fj cruiser sending the front-end colliding directly into the back of the slow moving vehicle.as the 18-wheeler continued forward, my fj cruiser wassqueezed outfrom between the two vehicles and pushed into another lane.both the driver and passenger of my fj cruiser were transported to the hospital for injuries.no airbags deployed at any time during the collision with the slow moving vehicle.extensive damage to the front and rear of my vehicle resulted in a total loss.

Loss of brakes, tried to stop. Both feet applied to brakes and nothing. This was a t stop with a 20' drop on the other side of the road . This was on a road driven constantly in our neighborhood. Turned the car to the right went over the curb through a yard hit a fire hydrant took it across the street jumped the other curb and stopped in brush. There were no skid marks in the grass or road where the breaks had been applied. Drivers side air bag ripped or shredded at bottom did not inflate fully, passengers did inflate correctly. No one was hurt seriously or taken by ems.

Driver door actuator works inconsistently .spoke with dealer and told need replacement.went on line and see it is a frequent problem.no accident or damage to vehicle.

I purchased new a 2008 toyota fj cruiser 2 wheel drive with automatic transmission. Since ownership from march 2009 to date, i have been experiencing a lurching forward of the vehicle while the brakes are applied and at a full stop. This lurching forward occurs when the air conditioner is on and at the time that the air conditioner clutch engages. Most of the time, when the air conditioner clutch engages, the engine rpm only increases about 100 rpm, but frequently, when the a/c clutch engages the engine rpm increases 300 to 400 rpm with normal brake pressure while stopped, 100 rpm engine increases cause no problem, but with 300 to 400 rpm engine increases, normal brake pressures while stopped are not adequate and the vehicle lurches forward. I took the vehicle to the bill penny toyota service department (huntsville, alabama) on 02/23/2010 and the service report stated that they could not duplicate the problem. The problem has been ongoing since my ownership began.

There appears to be a short in some wiring.my turn signal/hazards fuse blows ever time i try to turn them on.

I have repeatedly complained about the accelerator hesitation in my 2008 toyota fj cruiser. It has been a problem since i purchased it, brand new. I know someone who has the exact same problem with hers. She complained to pauley toyota, ft. Smith, arkansas i complained to fayetteville auto park toyota in fayetteville, arkansas.both dealers solution was to reset computer.obviously this is a chronic issue with no permanent solution.the danger lies especially when merging onto highways, the hesitation slows the vehicle down and engine revs.please help.there is no specific incident date so i will choose an arbitrary date in order to submit*tw

Antilock brakes activated after hitting ripple in exit ramp surface.vehicle would not stop despite pressing down harder on the brake pedal.required releasing brake pedal completely and then reapplying brakes to cause vehicle to stop.came very close to shooting out into four-way intersection.has happened on several occasions under similar circumstances (very minor bump on road causes antilocks to active upon breaking though this doesn't actually stop the vehicle).

The contact owns a 2008 toyota fj cruiser. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph and trying to avoid crashing into some horses, the vehicle slid off of the road and crashed into a ditch. A rod engine failed and caused the crash to occur. The contact was injured. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop but the engine was replaced at the contacts expense by an authorized dealer. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 8,600. The current mileage was approximately 15,000.

I was driving down the road when the foot rest on the driver side came loose and got stuck under the brake pedal.it prevented me from being able to depress the brake and i had to use the emergency brake to slow down enough to reach down and clear the brake so i could stop.

I bought a new 2008toyota fj cruiser and while i had my foot on the brake the engine accelerated.this happened two times within 3 months of me buying the car.since then over a year has passed and this has not happened again.

The frame on my fj cruiser it literately rotting to nothing. As are most produced from 2007 - 2012 i have begged toyota for help and a resolution like with the tundra and tacoma frame rotting issues. This is a major safety issue and someone is going to get hurt or killed. My control are in rotting away from the frame. As you can see in the picture the this is bad bad. Fj cruiser was stationary.

Excessive rust on the fuel tank straps and vehicle frame. Underbody of this vehicle couldn't have been manufactured to u.s corrosion standards since i've not seen any american vehicles with this widespread rust issue.

Driver door actuator works inconsistently .spoke with dealer and told need replacement.went on line and see it is a frequent problem.no accident or damage to vehicle.

The contact owns a 2008 toyota fj cruiser. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently as all of the warning lamps illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the transmission was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 75,000.

The frame and suspension pieces on my fj have rusted due to poor coatings and materials used by toyota.

The rear end of the power train (rear axel) started making a grinding or wining noise.

I purchased a 2008 toyota f.j. Cruiser and since i have had the vehicle i have had continuous problems with a defect in the drive train which has now caused problems with my transmission having started to skip. The dealership has promised on numerous occasions to fix the problems, but as of yet have not been able to. I continue to get the same run around from big business. Can someone please shed light on this obvious defect with this vehicle. Nothing they have done so far has fixed the problem. Help me!!!!

Throwout bearing failing, threatens to leave vehicle stranded or cause transmission to lock up causing an accident.

Seat belts for both driver's side and passenger side do not retract back completely once used.especially, the driver's side seat belt was getting worse as it was used.finally, driver's side seat belt locked and does not pull or retract.taking it to the dealership...

Driver side seat belt does not retract. Stays loose over chest. There was a recall over this but for some reason my fj wasn't in the recall.

The contact owns a 2008 toyota fj cruiser. The contact stated that the front passenger seat belt seized. The contact was unable to use the seat belt. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v098000 (seat belts). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 82,000.

Driver side seat belt not retracting

Toyota is risking lives with the fj cruiser - owners are currently driving with a risk of non-functional seat belts. After receiving a recall notice in the mail on monday, 5/20, i checked the toyota website and found the following information on the logged-in owner site: this is an important safety recall. Please contact your authorized toyota dealer and schedule an appointment to perform an inspection and install reinforcement brackets on both doors access at no charge to you. Based upon the inspection, in limited cases, the seat belt retractor(s) and/or access door(s) may be replaced.i immediately made an appointment for that same afternoon. I had to argue with the dealer that the brackets were required (they wanted only to perform the inspection and stop there if no cracks were present). After finally agreeing that yes, the brackets needed to be installed (they had 'misread' the process flow chart! they don't appear to have had any training on what could potentially be a life-threatening situation for their customers), they said they had none in stock and would order them today. This morning they called me and said that toyota has "blocked ordering of those parts" - and suggested that it might be because the solution doesn't work.currently we are driving vehicles that do not meet minimal government safety requirements - both the driver and front passenger are in danger of having seat belts malfunction during an accident. They should be providing some type of relief (e.g., loaner cars until the issue is resolved).thank you.

Driver seat belt wont retract. Defect on recall and reportedly repaired on 08-15-13 at carson city scion, nevada. The defect remains as seat belt will not retract. I purchased vehicle used in july, 2016; seat belt retracted then but was very loose requiring adjustment constantly. I contacted toyota of salinas on 2/28/17 and spoke with service manager don correll. Correll informed me his company would not repair the defect as toyota in carson city already did. I then showed him, and service assistant ivan gonzales of the defect and advised them the safety defect was not properly repaired and remains defective and unsafe due to repair deficiency as it was self evident the alleged repair was not done properly. Correll's response was: : we are not going to fix your car".

Seat belts no longer working, ends do not click together to secure safety

The contact owns a 2008 toyota fj cruiser. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 13v098000 (seat belts). The recall repair was performed and afterward, the passenger's side seat belt would not retract. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where the technician stated that the seat belt spiral would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 45,477.updated 12/30/13

Seat belt re tractor for drivers side inoperable and will not retract. I contacted local dealership as well as toyota mgr whom stated there as no recall nor where they aware there was a problem. Vehicle was stationary when defect occurred. The belt now hangs loose and cannot be used

Passanger side seat belt rusted out and stopped retracting at 60k miles.driver side is also starting to go.

Driver side seat belt retractor stopped working. Seat belt is fully extended and will not retract the seat belt. Online research shows seat belt retractor springs are rusting internally, thus preventing the retractor from returning the seat belt to normal position. Driving, parking, etc. Will not result in the seat belt retracting at all.

Passanger side seat belt rusted out and stopped retracting at 60k miles.driver side is also starting to go.

2008 toyota fj cruiser frame rotting from inside and out.all suspension components have been replaced due parts failing because of corrosion that bled over from the frame to include both front steering knuckles, two parts that only ever get replaced in the event of an accident. Several frame supports have corroded from the inside out and are flaking off. Brake components that run along the frame have corroded from the frame to the bracket that holds them to the lines themselves. Cause a slow brake leak over time that eventually resulted in a dangerous near accident situation that was caused by complete immediate lack of brake pressure. Evasive driving and a sound mind avoided a legitimate accident, had to tow the truck to a shop.unsafe to drive. Frame will not hold up in an accident.12 year old frame should not be anywhere near this condition. Due to oversights at the manufacturer this frame is now corroding from the inside out.

Brakes in certain situations become unresponsive.happened twice when my wife was driving.once when the streets were wet, she put on the brakes and went sliding all the way through the intersection. Abs did not work.the next time coming out of the parking garage, she went over some loose gravel and applied the brakes and the vehicle did not stop. She rear ended the vehicle ahead of her. Luckily there was no damage and the other driver was not a jerk. She said both times the brakes were unresponsive. See this thread for more information of this happening to others:http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/problems-dealer-service/102642-brake-issues-report-your-date-manufacture-vin.htmlsomebody is going to get hurt if it has not happened already.

Sever rusting of frame, break and suspension components and brackets. This 2008 toyota fj cruiser is quickly becoming a safety hazard on the roads. I have a 92 sabb and a 93 vw that don't have have the rust issues this toyota has. Toyota should have recalled the fj cruisers for faulty frames and undercarriage long ago.

Brake caliper and brake caliper pistons bind in caliper bore causing the vehicle to pull to one side or the other depending on which side the problem is. When the brakes are applied, the "good" calipers do their job, but the bad caliper pistons are momentarily stuck and this causes the car to pull to the good side as the brakes are applied, then a moment later the "bad" brake pistons let loose and the car pulls back the other way. Also then as the pistons are bound, when the brakes are released, the good side pistons retract, but the bad side bind on return, so pulling to the bad side. This is most noticed on the front brakes but also occur on the back. Note that the "bad" side on the back may not be the same side as "bad" on the front, causing a zig-zag type pulling , front one way, back the other and can be very unptedictable, particularly when sudden or "panic" braking occurs. I purchased an extended warranty with the car and toyota authorized and the dealer did replace three complete calipers no charge under my extended toyota warranty. However subsequent complaints brought the regional service rep to a meeting at my request where we went to an empty parking lot and conducted "panic" stops several times at 35 mph and one at 40 mph with not duplication of my complaints. I am suspicious that the panic stopping is a way to get what would be called a "proportioning control valve" to un-stick. This valve as i call it is a device that balances brake fluid pressure to all four calipers in an equal criss-cross pressure so all calipers are getting the same pressure unlike old fassioned single or double systems from back in the day. I can't verify this is a "secret" service fix for unbalanced braking, but now some months after my caliper replacements, the calipers are beginning to exhibit the same problem and i'm out of warranty. Obviously there is a problem with the design

While driving about 35mph on smooth asphalt the cars in front of me started braking.i applied my brakes lightly and nothing happened, pushed brake pedal harder still nothing and started to panic then all of a sudden the brakes engaged hard almost causing me to hit the car in front of me and the car behind almost hit me.i purchase the fj cruiser used with about 52,000 miles on it.this has happened about 5 times since it was purchased.i do not feel the vehicle is safe and toyota needs to step up and fix the problem before people are injured or killed.i see complaints all over the internet with the same problem something needs to be done!

The dealer did replace my master cylinder and the pressure pump after the experience with the abs issues as others have stated, this was when the car was under warranty. It seemed to fix the abs problem with the long pulsing and basically the computer taking over the braking. I am still experiencing a mushy pedal and lack of braking when the car is driven over a longer period of time or during the summer months. However after a lot of research and paying attention to the symptoms, i am convinced this is a pressure and heat problem. I don't know why on a 5700 lb vehicle that they are using ceramic pads, dot 3 fluid and this pressure system, it just can't handle it.

Hello, toyota calipers and caliper pistons have a problem. The pistons or calipers are corroding and causing delayed employment of braking on that caliper. Understand that the calipers that are working correctly will "pull" to the side they are on and the caliper that has a problem will have a delayed engagement. This is extremely dangerous. The "good" caliper causes the car to pull to that side, then the "bad" caliper engages pulling the car back the other way. When the brakes are released, the "good" caliper lets go and the "bad" caliper releases a few seconds later. Understand that this can happen on any of the four calipers front or rear. The combinations of good and bad calipers can cause the car to zig zag left or right unpredictably, pulling left or right, and if the driver is not ready for it, can cause a big problem controlling the car. Hard to explain the complexity of the various braking responses you can get with this problem, but check the comments on the internet and know that there are thousands of people with issues with fj cruisers, four runners etc. I have had three calipers replaced under warranty, but the problem is returning. Toyota knows they have a problem, but as usual, no public acknowledgement. Please do something about it. You can contact me anytime, [xxx]. This is a problem and please look into it.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Upon hard braking, if vehicle hits a bump, pothole, uneven road surface, etc, the abs kicks in making it almost impossible to stop unless i completely release the brakes thus requiring me to slam on it hard to prevent rear ending another object.

Frame, suspension, and brakes have extreme damage from rust.rear brakes are non-functional because of rust.

I drive a 2008 toyota fj cruiser.this evening while coming to a stop at a busy intersection, i hit a small but hard bump in the road and completely lost my brakes momentarily.about a second later the braking was restored, but not before i went through the stop and entered a busy four lane highway narrowly escaping a crash as an on-coming car swerved.this brake problem sounds eerily similar to the already recalled prius, and since toyota has not been very proactive in its recalls i believe this is the same problem on yet another vehicle model.what should i do about this problem?

Brake issue: unresponsive at first... The pedal stutters a bit and doesn't seem to engage the brake. Then i release and re-apply and then it become over-responsive. This issue has happened to me approximately 3 times since i purchased in 12/2008. All incidents occurred as i was coming to a stop at an intersection.

When rolling to a stop sign my 2008 fj cruiser ran over uneven pavement and the brakes went haywire.i almost ran the stop sign with no control over the vehicle.

When braking suddenly over uneven road the toyota fj fails to stop in a safe and constant manner.

I have a 2008 fj cruiser manual transmission. This is the 2nd time this has happened to me since i've owned the truck. On may 10th, i was driving down the highway at about 70-80 mph. The truck to the right of me seemed like he wanted to change lanes in to my lane. I hit the breaks to let him in but the braking power being applied to the rotors was a lot harder then what i needed. In other words, it seemed like the computer thought my brake pedal was all the way down to the floor when in reality, i just needed a quick brake. Anyway, the wheels locked up to and released. It scared me how hard the truck stopped-- almost caused an accident behind me. The brakes then released and i kept going, but could smell the burnt rubber for another mile. This was a cement highway road that may have had some cracks in it but i don't remember if being particularly uneven. Just seemed like the computer misunderstood how much actual pressure i applied to the pedal and over braked.the first time this ever happened was probably a year ago when i was going around 20mph. Again, don't remember the condition of the road being overly terrible.

I own a 2008 fj cruiser and have had brake issues. As i approach a stop light and try to stop, the brake pedal goes soft and nothing happens. I pump the brakes 3-4 times before the brakes suddenly engage and stop abruptly. This has happened 4 times since december 2009 and my dealer tells me that there is nothing wrong. This scares the [xxx]out of me and i almost ended up in the back seat of a benz this last time.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

2008 toyota fj cruiser, build date:10/07. Have had unnerving experiences with the brake system on my fj.(1) when braking over a non smooth road the brake pedal pulsates for a long period and does not stop the vehicle. (2) had to panic stop and hit the brakes hard, they locked up, there was no braking just the abs took over and locked up the brakes hard to the point that i was glad i was wearing my seat belt, because i would've been lying in the street.(3) the pedal will be hard one time and mushy the next when applying the brakes. When the pedal is mushy the brakes do not work appropriately, nearly rear ending people or locking up the brakes to stop. (4) when at a stop the pedal was mushy and i tried to "pump"up the pedal by pumping the brake pedal, all the warning lights came on (related to the braking system) the dash and an annoying alarm sounded, has happened 3 times now. (5) when the pedal is mushy i can push it down all the way to the stopping point/floor with no resistance. Called the dealer they said they have never had any "issues".

2008 toyota fj have experience momentary loss of braking capability while traveling over an uneven road surface, pothole or bump similar as to what has been reported with prius. Vehicle continues forward without slowing down even though brakes are depressed after hitting a pothole. Release and reapplication of brakes often results in emergency hard braking.no accident occured but vehicle traveled well into interchange.

Momentary loss of braking capability while traveling over an uneven road surface, pothole or bump. This has been going on for the past 2 years. Complained to dealer last september. They looked at vehicle and said there was nothing wrong. I can duplicate the issue on our road which is uneven and has bumps. Happened this morning as i came to work. Suv speeds up while pressing brake over bumps then brakes catch and it if were not for a seat belt i would go through the windshield!

The brakes just failed and was suddenly unresponsive at low speed when i was driving over slightly bumpy road on i-10 los angeles, the road was not icy neither had any dirt or sand, it felt like that i had no brakes, and almost hit the car infront of me, luckily it came to a stop when i stepped the brakes so hard that it feels like useless. I took my car to my mechanics, they inspected it and told me that it was fine. The brake pads were very new. I replaced new brake fluids, but this incident happened again ! i went to fj cruiser forum, and lots of people has encounter this same situation when driving over pot holes to cause the failure in the abs computer. And toyota can do nothing about it!!

The brake system on my 2008 toyota fj cruiser is faulty.when going over any bumps and braking the pedal feels like a master cyl, failure.the pedal goes to the floor and breaking becomes non existent.it's been to the dealer but they can't find the problem and even though it's under warranty they keep charging me labor.i'm a mechanical person and i know when there's a problem.in light of toyota's recent problems and propensity to evade, i want my concerns on record. I would be happy to let a 3rd party examine the vehicle.hopefully something will be done before more people die at the hands of a faulty car.i'm looking at the date box below, this is a recurring problem that i first noticed in the winter of 2008-2009.

Firmly applying brakes to slow for traffic, abs stopped vehicle very quickly, then acted as if abs was working but with minimal braking power.incident happened on smooth, dry pavement.vehicle moving in a straight line.

While coming to a stop, if my 2008 toyota fj cruiser hits a bump the abs brake system activates kicking back on the brake pedal. Then, the brakes grab as if they are going to lock up and skid. The only way to stop the brake system from continuing to do this is to release the pedal completely then, reapply the brakes. Obviously this isn't what you want to do in order to stop.there are numerous cases like this documented on this website. How much more documentation does toyota need before they take this seriously?

Brakes do not work properly when the car hits any kind of rough patch in the road while brakes are being applied.extremely dangerous condition because it is very difficult to stop the car when this occurs.occurs repeatedly and not limited to an isolated incident.took car to dealer and dealer will not acknowledge issue instead claiming that i do not understand how anti-lock brakes work.this is an absurd excuse.

I have had an issue more than once where when applying my brakes if i hit a bump the abs will take over, the brake pedal pulses and i will lose the ability to stop on my original mark.when this happens it feels as though the vehicle is barely attempting to make a stop at all.i have tried to apply more pressure to the brake pedal with no success.i have also tried removing pressure from the pedal and reapplying pressure but that does not seem to stop the vehicle any faster.i have had the problem when cruising between 35 and 45 mph.

This is a sporadic occurrence and cannot be reproduced deliberately: when braking suddenly at 40 mph and below, the vehicle does not slow down noticeably. It appears only minimal braking force is exerted at these occurrences, despite maximum brake force on the pedal. This happens also on dry pavement, ruling out skidding as cause of failed deceleration. The massively prolonged braking distance caused two near-misses. The vehicle was purchased new, with the brake defect first noticed during the first year of operation (first 15,000 miles). The dealership was notified, details explained, and an inspection of the braking system was requested. The dealership was unable to duplicate the concern because of the only sporadic occurrence of brake failure. No action was taken.

While driving on dry pavement i made a lane change while approaching a stop light when it turned yellow. I applied the brakes slightly harder than normal at which point the car took over and applied 100% braking force. The car slammed to a stop and both the passenger and i were whipped forward and were luck to have not been rear ended. I am very concerned with all the similar problems with the abs controllers.

Vehicle continues forward without slowing down even though brakes are depressed after hitting a pothole. Release and reapplication of brakes often results in emergency hard braking.no accident occured but vehicle traveled well into interchange.

My toyota fj cruiser has an issue involving the anti-lock braking system. If i hit a bump while decelerating, the abs pulses in such a way that it is impossible to stop safely at my original planned stopping point. If, for example, i am decelerating and plan on stopping within 100 yards at a stop sign, and i hit a pot hole, the abs will pulse (engage brakes briefly, disengage them, then engage again repeatedly) in such a fashion that i will stop several yards beyond the stop sign. The pulse pattern of the abs on the fj cruiser is dangerously long, and has caused several near misses on my part in a variety of situations (missing stop signs / lights, almost rear-ending someone due to hitting a bump/engaging abs while stopping, etc.)

2008 toyota fj cruiser. When coming to stop going down a hill, went over a pot hole while applying the brakes the vehicle did not stop and started to jerk forward. The brake pedal hit the floor had to release foot so that the pedal will come up vehicle almost went through intersection. No brakes power for several seconds. Dealer states that nothing is wrong, typical behavior for this vehicle.

When approaching a stop sign on a residential street at approximately 30mph, went to apply brakes, abs kicked in and lost most if not all braking ability resulting in rolling the stop and ending up in the middle of a busy 4 lane divided road.the section of the street approaching the stop sign has quite a few filled pot holes and is bumpy.this is probably the 4th or 5th time this has occurred at the same intersection or in similar road/driving conditions.

On more than one occasion i have had the brakes go to 100%force when applying minimal force to the pedal.this behavior has occurred at street speeds of 35-40 and when coming off of a freeway.the force is strong enough that everyone in the car is launched forward to the point that the seatbelt lock engages.i have tried removing my foot from the pedal and reapplying pressure but the brakes immediately engage at 100%.only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop do the brakes begin to work normally again.

My steering had become stiff, no steering fluid leaks or issues with the rack, dealer drove vehicle said nothing it wrong. I got home and took a better look, the u joints on the lower intermediate steering shaft are rusted and rotted. The steering in noticeably tight and has trouble returning to center.

Every time i drive between 60 to 65 mph the steering wheel shakes back and forth. Also the front end shakes. It can be difficult to control at times. Had tires re-balanced and the 4 wheel alignment checked. I have also had the front end checked. Everything checks out. This appears to be a dangerous situation that seems common in a large population of fj's on the road.

Half of my 2008 fj cruiser needed to be repainted due to cracking and flaking off of the paint.

2008 fj cruiserfootrest on left side of driver floorboard broke loose and can interfere with safe operation of other driver's pedals.failure occurred at 30,600 miles.danger avoided by immediately pulling over to safe area and removing broken footrest from driver's area.dealer called immediately and replacement to follow.photos of this are available.

I was driving down the road when the foot rest on the driver side came loose and got stuck under the brake pedal.it prevented me from being able to depress the brake and i had to use the emergency brake to slow down enough to reach down and clear the brake so i could stop.

The foot rest broke free of its attachments and shifted to the right under the brake pedal.

Had vehicle lifted by toyotaand paid toyota for this modification. Approx 10 month later i showing sign of fenders bulging and tearing. They had me sign a wavier that warranty may not cover modificationsafter accepting vehicle.yet there having vehicles lifted and put on there lot to sell. I have talked to many others who have this problem some lifted some not. Also toyota have a upgraded the parts to fix problem .which i have pictures of. The problem is frame flexes to much and rips in wrinkle zones on vehicle for frontal crashes. I uses vehicle for trail riding and hunting . And i also own 2 other 4x4 ford, jeep and have no body tearing on them.

The frame of my truck has started to rust out as to many fj cruisers. It's been a known issue that these frame have this problem along with the toyota tacoma and toyota tundra. Which toyota have a recall on those two models but they've yet to recognize the toyota fj cruiser for the same issue. If this issue isn't resolved, it can result in weak points in the chassis making those area fail and cause an accident underload.i have had my shop look at it and said they can only treat the affected areas so much but the issue will keep coming back over time as rust does not go away unless its cut out.for the safety for myself, any fj owners as well as the roads we share with the public i hope that we get this issue corrected through the manufacturer. Thank you

2008 fj cruiser, 4800 miles, manual trans, no modifications, passenger side fender inner is collapsing (cracks in the steel fender inner and gross deformation of the sheet metal) within the engine bay in area of crumple zone creases/gussets. My concern is that the crash worthiness of the vehicle has been decreased. Additionally there is a major hood alignment issue . Hood alignment problems can be directly related to hood latch failures which could cause injury to both the vehicle occupant as well as pose a hazard to others on the road.the dealer was not able to diagnose the fender crack or hood alignment problems and provide a countermeasure/repair and claims that they have not previously seen these failures.

Excessive rust on the frame. Vehicle is maintained very well, but frame rust continues to get worse. This is a known issue with the fj cruiser on all the forms online. Toyota has yet to file a recall on our vehicles. Other toyota vehicles that use the same frame have already been recalled. There are thousands of us with a rotting in frames and toyota will do nothing.

Inner fender panel buckling above wheel well, on passenger side.happened under normal driving conditions.crack on outside fender also.buckle leads to large 3-5 inch crack, affect hood closure and secureness of hood.

2008 fj cruiser has traveled approximately 150 miles off road on established trails and 15000 miles on paved roads. There are tears in the inner fender aprons in the crumple zone and the nose of the body appears to be sagging down. The passenger side door is impinged and paint is chipping off when it is opened. The rips formed spontaneously, there has been no collision or impact on the vehicle. The tears are through metal running from the top of the crumple zone to about a half inch before the bottom of the crumple zone, the tear is about 6 inches from the back of the engine bay.

Extreme rust and cracking in frame

Both inner front fenders are cracked.i don't know how this happened, the vehicle has never been involved in any sort of accident.

I own a 2008 toyota fj cruiser and have driven both on and off road since february of 2008. I have noticed a popping sound when opening the passenger side door, when the dealership went to look at why this was happening they discovered that the inner fender apron in the engine bay was buckled and torn in the crumple zone even though i have never struck anything with my vehicle, not the ground, not anothercar, nothing. The rips run from the top of the crumple zone to approximately one half inch from the bottom, the top of the tear is folding forward so that the tear has resulted in an opening in the shape of a v, i assume this shift is what is causing the door impingement against the quarterpanel.

I have complained to toyota about the rust form the start of ownership, there response was that the frames were made in america. Does matter where it was made just the super poor quality of the metal.i believe this is the same frame as the tundra's and they are all recalled why not the fj cruisers?

Over the life of the vehicle, cracks have developed in the front inner fender structure, which have now turned into large splits in the crumple zones.the cause is a result of body movement between the frame and body.toyota has denied warranty coverage due to large tires installed on vehicle, yet has redesigned the inner fender structure of these vehicles three times due to this same issue with stock vehicles.as the tears in the fender structure progress, the front clip of the vehicle has begun to drift, and the hood gap and fender gaps are shifting.i am concerned with the safety of the vehicle and how collision standards will be affected with the crumple zones cracked.

2008 toyota fj cruiser is experiencing inner fender bulging.this started occurring shortly after buying the vehicle.the vehicle currently has 4800 miles.this problem has been well documented and in most cases does not stop until the inner fender is cracked all the way through.obviously, there is some sort of design flaw.

Excessive rust on the fuel tank straps and vehicle frame. Underbody of this vehicle couldn't have been manufactured to u.s corrosion standards since i've not seen any american vehicles with this widespread rust issue.

The vehicle developed a bulge on the driver side engine bay fender apron. I have seen many online and met others in person who share this problem on the fj cruisers. This concerns me because i feel that the structural integrity of the vehicle is now compromised and don't know how this will affect the safety of my vehicle in the event of a crash.

2008 toyota fj cruiser, inner fender apron bulges in crumple zone's. This vehicle is used as a daily driver and has been off road for approximately 30 of the 19744 miles that are currently on it. My vehicle is very well maintained and not abused. This is a very common problem with the fj cruiser model, so much as toyota has redesigned this part of the body structure 3 times. I feel strongly that this defect will endanger the safety of my self and children should i be involved in a front end collision. Pleas do your do diligence and investigate this issue. Toyota generally will do nothing about this issue and will blame it on abuse or misuse.

There is buckling of the body, right and left side, under hood approximately where the hood hinges attach to body.the mechanic has advised it is a weak point in the body which on some vehicles the body actually cracks and transfers over to the fender over time.it looks like it is due to vibration from the body front end to the rear firewall.the estimated cost to fix this problem from a toyota certified body shop is $11,837.02.i have filed a complaint with toyota corporate, and it is pending.toyota doesn't seem to want to take responsibility.

Extensive frame rust, heavy rust on rear crossmember and rear axle, body mounts

Severe rust on all parts of the frame 'undercarriage', brake lines, gas tank straps. This issue has been widely reported by fj owners and nothing done by the manufacturer. Truck was never driven through salt water nor is it stored by the water front. I am frightened that in an accident the whole body of the truck will just come off the frame.

Excessive rust on the frame and undercarriage.needed to be cleaned and treated.

Vehicle was stationary in driveway my frame, some suspension components, and my rocker panels were falling apart in my hands

Fj cruiser front inner fender is bulging out into the engine compartment.it appears the front body (hood + fenders) is constructed with too thin a gauge of steel causing excessive front body panel flexing and it's giving out at the weakest point.i have not done anything at this point to correct it as i just noticed it and i'm now monitoring its progression.i am concerned that the bulging will progress into the sheet metal ripping as it has done on other fj cruisers thus reducing the effectiveness of the engineered crumple zone.this is my daily driver and i transport my children (currently 3 and 5 yrs.) on a daily basis.should i be concerned?

We bought our fj cruiser new in 2008. I have meticulously maintained (with sevice records from toyota dealership), and i ha e always kept it meticulousinside and out. The vehicle is a 2008 with 100k miles and looks brand new up top... However the undercarriage is a completely different story.no matter how often i cleaned the frame, suspension, and drivetrain i could not keep the rust at bay,now i'm extremely concerned about my families safety. I'm worried brackets are about to rust off, and body mounts and bolts are showing severe rust, this is unacceptable. I have never seen a cars undercarriage rust so quickly andcompletely in all my life. This needs to be remedied before people start getting hurt while driving with these with these unsafe chassis and components.and my gas tank straps are rotting fast. I have owned toyota's my whole life. I currently own 5 different land cruisers. We loved our fj and bought it because we thought it would last.

Bulging inner fender , fj cruiser 08.

Drivers side inner fender crumple zone has bulges protruding into the engine compartment.

This vehicle started to develope rust immediately after purchase.the vehicle is a 2008 andis scary rusty on the frame and other components.an abnormal amount of rust compared to other 2008 era vehicles.eventually one of these faulty frames are going to break in a high speed scenario and serious injury or death will occur.my otherwise perfect fj cruiser only has 35000 miles on it and sat in storage for the winter of 2016 and 2017.

The frame and suspension pieces on my fj have rusted due to poor coatings and materials used by toyota.

Frame rusted way too early in its life time

The vehicle has a severely rusty frame. Rest of the fj body is mint with a total of 80k miles. The rear cross section where the gem hitch bolts to is particularly bad and has hole. The hitch itself is also sitting a little crooked which i believe is due to the poor structural integrity of the cross bar. Towing is out of the question at this point but more importantly, i am very worried what might happen in an event i get rear ended.

Gas tank support straps failed while driving.dealer installed temporary nylon ratchet straps until parts arrived.

While inspecting a broken rear fuel tank strap, several holes were noticed in the frame of the vehicle. Excessive corrosion was present all along the welds on the frame and its crossmembers. There were spots where i could poke my finger through the frame. There was no warning that this corrosion was happening. I am the third owner of this fj and it was inspected before i purchased it. The vehicle has not yet been taken to a dealership, police or an insurance company.

Frame, suspension, and brakes have extreme damage from rust.rear brakes are non-functional because of rust.

2008 toyota fj cruiser has cracks on the inner fender wells.i am a member of an online community and it is well documented that in many fjs cracks develop on the inner fender wells.

The contact owns a 2008 toyota fj cruiser. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 2 mph, the passenger side front ball joint fractured. The vehicle was towed to autonation toyota spokane valley (8600 e sprague ave, spokane valley, wa 99212, (509) 850-9359) to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

No crashes. Failure every time i drive the vehicle. Front end vibrations are a sign of front end design problems that could be early signs of front end fatigue and not simply tire/wheel balance issues.

Vehicle was stationary in driveway my frame, some suspension components, and my rocker panels were falling apart in my hands

The foot rest assembly which is plastic and fastened to the floor board with protruding screws, snapped off while driving. The dangerous aspect of it, was that it slid towards the brake pedal and caused me to skillfully pull over the vehicle while sliding the part from under pedal with left foot. This could have been an extremely dangerous situation.

Just bought a brand new fj cruiser and within 2 months the windshield is cracked. In two places. They are impact but i have heard this is a very big problem with the suvs.

The rear fuel tank strap broke due to corrosion and it was retained. The fuel tank was spotted hanging lower than normal after driving on a long trip on a vacation. I removed the tank shield and have removed the vehicle from service until new tank straps arrive. No police or insurance have been contacted. There was no warning of this failure or evidence this failure was imminent.

The rear gas tank strap snapped on the vehicle (the strap side facing to the outside of the vehicle). The strap failed due to rust. The strap must have snapped when i hit a bump in the road. However, i did not know that the strap had failed until i happened to be standing behind the vehicle one day and noticed the tank sagging. Therefore, i do not know how many days that i had been driving around with the tank hanging, supported only by the front strap. But i think that possibly i noticed the failure within one day of the failure. The red strap in the photo is my temporary support until i can have the straps replaced.

Frame rusted way too early in its life time

I attempted to submit my vehicle to the service department at toyota of longview, in longview, texas, in response to safety recall notice titled "certain 2008 through 2011 model year fj cruiser vehicles equipped with trd accessory wheels and toyota-recommended light truck tires." i requested the tpms ecu be replaced, the cold tire inflation pressure be revised and a new tire/loading label installed.toyota of longview refused to perform the recommended work unless i paid a $99.00 diagnostic fee.the recall notice stated these components will be replaced at no charge to me. I believe these components must be replaced notwithstanding the service department mechanic's opinion. Please advise on how to proceed.

When the contact would drive the vehicle he noticed that the rpms would rise regardless if he depressed the accelerator pedal. The pedal would occasionally stick to the floor of the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the vehicle was performing properly and that the high engine idle was due to the vehicle burning off ignition fumes. The vehicle had not been servicedat the tiime of the complaint. The failure mileage was 4563, and the currnt mileage is 4867.

I bought a new 2008toyota fj cruiser and while i had my foot on the brake the engine accelerated.this happened two times within 3 months of me buying the car.since then over a year has passed and this has not happened again.

The contact owns a 2008 toyota fj cruiser. The contact stated that the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact attempted to apply the brakes but to no avail. The contact applied continuous abrupt pressure to the brakes until the vehicle finally came to a stop. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer yet the failure was unable to be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The contact was unaware of the mileage on the vehicle.

I bought a new 2008 toyota fj cruiser on 10/18/07 and my windshield has been chipped three times now(5/8/08). I have talked to several other owners of this vehicle and all have had the same problem. In some states insurance will pay for a new windshield but not ga.

Bought new fj august 2008 special edition.by january the windshield had a very small chip and then over night proceeded to crack across windshield on drivers side.today i went to lunch and there happened to be another fj there and i looked at his windshield and he has a crack in the exact same location. There must be a design flaw.i have several chips in my windshield on my 2001 tacoma and none of them have cracked.what's up with this??????

I have impacted more than three vehicles behind the above mentioned vehicle because the back part is too high and it affects visibility to lower cars. This car does not have any reverse camera or sensor.

The contact owns a 2008 toyota fj cruiser. While driving at 60mph an unknown objectstruck the front windshield. There were no markings of where the object struck. A crack began to form in the windshield shortly thereafter. The contact stated the windshield was extremely brittle and the design of the windshield was a potential safety hazard. The manufacturer stated they would not assist because the failure was caused by a road hazard. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were 22,000.

Purchase the 2008 fj cruiser on oct. 13th 2007 with less than 300 miles on the vehicle i now have a cracked windshield. I didn't hear anything hit the windows, but noticed the 6 inch long crack when i opened the door this morning (oct 18) to drive the vehicle to work. Note: i could not show the incident date correctly as 2008 is not available foe selecting.

The contact owns a 2008 toyota fj cruiser. The contact started the ignition and the tire pressure monitoring system warning indicator illuminated intermittently. In addition, the failure would unexpectedly occur when driving. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who deflated the tires and the malfunction continued to occur. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.updated 11/10/11
