Tail lights go off and on intermittently. When tail lights are not working, cruise control does not work. When cruise control is operational, it stops working if i turn on headlights. I have been to the dealer 8 or 9 times when this is happening and am always told the bulb has blown and they replace it and send me on my way.there is apparently a short in the electrical system because when we pull out the "blown" bulb and put it back in, the lights will work again.the dealer has been of absolutely no assistance over the past 6 years.
After trying to start vehicleengine was making some noises, and consumer decided to turn vehicle off.when doing so,vehicle sounded like it was on.afterward, vehicle caught on fire. Contacted dealer, anddealerwas not willing to do anything.
Consumer pulled the vehicle into the garage and took the key out of the ignition, engine continued to run, andconsumer noticed smoke coming from under the hood. Contacted the fire department. They came and extinguished the fire. Fire department determined that a malfunction within the wiring harness caused the fire.
I suspect the electric design has problems, which cause the stop lights malfunctioning.the bulbs are usually ok if you test them.i have noticed many occurances on 1994 through 1996 models.i believe this is a serious safety issue.please investigate.thanks.
Brake light and tailight go out when vehicle hits a bump. Consumer has an appointment atdealerfor repairs.
The problem is with the rear lights sockets, the inside connector is made of plastic and when they get hot and old it melts, loosing the connections with the botton of the light bulb, i have to purchase from toyota a new wiring set, but the new ones are made of the same plastic, so they will fail again, i have seem plenty of toyotas corollas with rear lights malfunction in the road. Thanks.
While driving noticed sparks on floorboard, pulled to side, entire dashboard went up in flames, no warning, speed 10 mph, vehicle totaled; manufacturer claimedvehicle was struck by lightening.
Dashboard fire.
Oil sludge build-up caused engine to cease. Brought car to local toyota dealer(ak toyota,gu) and toyota mechanics tore the engine apart and then i was informed that to repair this engine it will cost over $6,000.00, because the warranty did not cover damages caused by engine sludge. Sincerely, [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I purchased the car october, 2000 as a used car with a warranty.about two weeks later the car broke down and had to be towed to dealer that i bought it from.a rebuilt engine block was put in because of major oil problems.it took over a month for them to finish the repair.i was assured that it was ok.about 5 months later the car started leaking oil and i had to constantly watch the oil level.i was told by the same dealer that it was normal to have to watch the oil on a car that old.i got more concerned and called another dealer and was told that it was not normal so i took the car back to the dealer. I insisted that the car be looked at.again the engine block had to be replaced as something was not put on correctly (that is the excuse they gave me). This took about 2 weeks to repair.again i was assured that the car would lastthis time.the engine was under warranty at this time.three months later the engine light went on so i took it back again.they fixed that problem but i am not sure what they did at that time.i drove the car just over a year and just this week the car started smoking.i took it to the dealer and was told that there was major work on the engine that needed to be done but the warranty was out.it will be very expensive to fix it and so they did not want to do it.now i have a car that does not run without smoking and i still owe $7000 on it.i am very upset because it seems that they sold me a car with major problems that they never could fix.
A contacted rod blew off the vehicle, causng oil to spill on the enigne comparment, resulting in vehicle catching on fire.
Vehicle caught fire.
To turn into our road, down shifted the gear from 3rd to 2nd.clanking noise, fumes and smoke filled the car. Noticed oil leak. Towed the vehicle to dealer. Dealer said 3rd piston rod broke and made a hole in the engine !! wierd. Anyone faced a similar problem?
The vehicle upon reaching 70+ mph, emits a loud engine noise, and this noise gets louder as i driver faster.i have to turn up the radio or talk louder because of the noise.it sounds like the engine is going to explode.each time i hear this noise, it upsets me.this noise is not normal and i am tired of drivingthe vehicle in its current state.

Brake, turn signal and parking lights replaced on four occasions, burned out.
Rear tail lamp socket contacts are worn/loose which causes parking lights and brake lights to fail to show intention to brake and intermittently work. Repair or replace bulbs and/or bulb reseat adjustments do not help or only temporarily fix issue. Same problem as camry's of the same year (nhtsa campaign id number:96v037000). All 92-97 corolla's i witness have the same problem/issue with failed tail lamps but the filaments are still intact/operational. Requesting that toyota replace sockets.dt
The brake lights of my toyota corolla (1996 model) have been having some malfunctions on and off for at least a year.at first, i thought it was the bulb problem, so i checked the assembly myself.the bulbs are all ok.the bulbs will light when i touch the wires connections.the bulbs will be ok for a while (days, hours or days), but it will stop functioning some time afterwards.it seems there is a connection problem in the design of the tail light assembly.since i am not an expert on it, i would like to report the incident.i have noticed the problem on same model cars on the road.to do a simple test, you may want to locate a 96/97 model with taillight blackouts.if the bulbs are ok, my statement will be valid.
Frequently bulbs blew out, then there was a quick flashing light that indicated one of the bulbswas burned out.this has happened 6 times since consumer has owned vehicle.
The vehicle experienced the same problem as stated in recall #99v103000 headlights, however the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.
Same defect as 1996 toyota camry recall- tail-light assembly melted due to overheated bulb.

1996 toyota corolla - when lights are on and you step on the brakes, the right tail light goes out.it is dangerous as when driving at night, it appears to the driver behind you that you are signaling for a right turn.i have replaced the bulbs and it will appear ok, then begin malfunctioning again.there must be an electrical connection problem in the tail light assembly.i have seen other corollas on the road that have the same problem.it is a safety issue that could cause accidents.
Brake, turn signal and parking lights replaced on four occasions, burned out.
Front left signal light broken.
Right rear turn signal working intermittently.vehicle taken to dealer shop, and problem still occurring. *jg
Rear right blinker bulb burned out at least four or more times since car was purchased.dealer found poor grounding first time and after that dealer only replaced bulb, withno further investigation of problem.trying to get repaired "again".dealer implies that there not sure if this is a "warranty problem" and i may not be entitled to a rental car. This is only the fouth time for repair, what constitues a warranty problem and accident and severallives taken away.this is a safety hazard, especially driving on the highway at speeds of 70 miles and hour -no one is looking for hand signals.had electrical failure trying to unluck doors using lock/unlock button while sitting inside.had to manually unlockdoor or put key into ignition to unlock doors.dealer stated problem would not repeat itself, so it was not a problem.not electrical diagnostic ran.have noise coming from font end of car.the first time repaired i was told it was some type of "arm" that lost a bolt.noise ceased for about a month.however, noise did return and grows increasingly louder while making sharp turns, backing up, and on inclines backing up.sounds as though front end axle is falling off. I was told this is a "normal sound" the brakes make while shifting and it is the sound of allbrakes on the1996 toyota, corolla.sound were not there when car was purchased nor does it state that sound should occur in owner's manual.i feelunsafe in my car for me and family.
I have replaced numerous bulbs to finally be told it's the casing or bulb holder that's defective and they have noticed several problems with rear lighting in this model corolla.dt
The contact owns a 1996 toyota corolla.while the vehicle was at an auto shop for repair, the contact was informed that the gas tank was corroded on top.there were holes on the filler pipe and rust on the gas tank.the failure was corrected by the auto shop.the manufacturer offered no assistance because the vehicle was out of warranty.the current mileage was approximately 98,500 and failure mileage was approximately 94,000.

Transmission on car fails without any kind of warnings. At high speeds, it does not allow driver enough time to pull-over. In case of heavy traffic this will become a huge risk for driver and other cars behind. This will likely cause a major accident. I was lucky both times since there was no traffic when transmission failed. Manufacturer has refused a re-purchase. Vehicle is unsafe for driving and needs to go through a thorough inspection.

Seat belt failed.
Rear seat belt failed.
Seat belt does not work and has been replaced 3 times.i am not comfortable that the problem has been corrected properly.i can't even drive my own car because i fear that i am putting my 2 year olds life in danger because of this problem.
No deployment of driver's/passenger's air bags during front and rear collisions, also sear belts did not lock, resulting in injuries.
Consumer statesthat it takes about (10) minutes before she can buckle the driver's side seat belt because of mechanism in the retractor and sometimes when the belt is buckled it becomes very tight. Vehicle will to taken to dealership this weekend.
Consumer was sitting in rear of vehicle when she pulled the seat belt out and locked it.the shoulder strap never retracted, the belt was too loose .
The driver's seat belt does not extend. The entire assembly has been replaced twice before, most recently 5 months ago.
Consumer comments that the right rear out board seat belt, fully extended, will not retract, therefore making it unsafe to utilize child safety seat.*jg
When vehicle was involved in a rear end crash, impacted at 50 mph, the driver'sseat collasped into the back seat. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was built that way so driver would not take impact.the seat has been repaired.one person was injured in accident, consumer is concerned that if anyone would have been seated in the back seat, they would have been crushed.
The driver's head rest is too wide.
Due to design of the head restraint, when driving it is difficult to see in either directions, consumer states that the head rest is too wide.
The vehicle was rearended at 45 mph, the driver's seat rail bent, causing the seat latch to break and the seat to go back.
