I only had my 1999 camry for 5 days. I was driving on the expressway doing about 35 mph. I was going around a slight curve when the wheel locked and i couldn't turn. I tried to stop but couldn't and ran directly into the concrete median causing me to spin around and then hit the median again. Both air bags came out and my car was towed to a lot where it was declared "totaled." no one or any other property was damaged. I had my car for only 5 days and it malfunctioned.

The air bag lighton dash flashes. This has been going on for years. I have had it checked numerous times by an authorized toyota service dealer and they used to mess with some wires under the drivers seat until the light stopped flashing. That fix last for a few months and then the flashing light returns. Thissituation has never been resolvedwhich leaves me to wonder if i have air bag protection or not. Luckily i have had no major accidents ,for i suspicion that if i did those air bags would not deploy. I need to resolve this safety issue !

I reported this to complaints.com on 11/12/2005 but wanted to also submit it to you due to all of the news lately.in november 2005, my parents were driving their 1999 camry and pulling slowing into a parking spot.just as they were about to complete parking and only going less than a mile per hour, their car accelerated very fast, left the curb and crashed into a building.we asked about if sudden acceleration could be investigated at this time but were told it couldn't. The car was totaled.my mom was injured (blunt force trauma to her chest) but recovered fairly soon after.she did go to the er.my dad, who was driving, was ok but following the accident was stressed due to worry about my mom's injury and having their car totaled since he was sure he hadn't done anything wrong..the airbag did not deploy.my dad is sure he did not hit the gas by mistake and my mom agrees that he didn't hit the gas either.

I was driving sountbound with 2 other passengers, we were all belted in. For several years, the check engine light has been coming on and we have been told it was the gas cap. Our mechanic has tried many solutions to repair this and hundreds of dollars later, we are now being told it is a common problem to this vehicle - the evaporation vapor canister. Upon further research, this piece was part of a lawsuit against toyota that toyota lost. We can not afford to pay over $400 for a part so that it passes inspection. Especially when toyota knew this part was a problem. Toyota should be responsible for the repair of this part.

This car is definetly a lemon ive put more money into than the car is worth and still doesnt work the dealer rock chevrolet knew of issues with this car but still sold it tried to have it fixed thru them but they were rude and wouldnt do it.

Vehicle did not turn off when the key was pulled out the ignition switch.smoke was coming from the switch before the vehicle finally turned off. Consumer will notify manufacturer.

Sometimes the vehicle did not start.the vehicle had been to the dealer five times for the same problem.the dealer replaced the spark plugs on 5/3/2003 and the vehicle continued to experience the same problem.

As i was driving my 1999 toyota camry to work, the vehicle caught fire, and was totally destroyed.the fire was preceded by a loud popping sound, which was followed by the loss of brakes/power steering, etc.i struggled to steer the vehicle off the road, coasting to a stop.meanwhile, immediately following the firecracker-like "pop," smoke began to pour into the vehicle from under the dashboard, as well as through the vents on the top of the dash.heavy smoke also began to pour out from under the hood of the car.as i finally brought the vehicle to a stop onto the shoulder of the road, a motorist stopped and hollered to me to get out of the car immediately as, he said, there were flames visible underneath the car.i exited the vehicle immediately, and within 3-5 minutes it was totally engulfed in flames.i dialed 911 immediately, and even though the incident occurred within 1.5 miles of the local fire station, the vehicle was totally engulfed in flames by the time the fire truck arrived.a pennsylvania state trooper arrived within 10 minutes of the onset of the episode, moments after the fire department arrived.a traffic report was filed with the state trooper.

1999 camry battery kept dying.then one day, the car stopped working during driving, and smoke was coming out of the hood.when the hood was opened, i saw that the cables and battery had caught on fire.the battery cables and battery had to be replaced. Old parts were discarded.

I turned on rear defrost and within few seconds back seat was on fire. Window burnt seat and seat belt also burned hand. It appears to have been a possible electrical cause. I figured a fuse would blow prior to a fire inside car. Had i been on fwy i would have not been lucky gas tank is inches below fire .

On aug 10, 2004 my sister was driving her 1999 toyota camry when it inexplicably drove off the w. Bound lanes of il i '74' at mi marker 115.it traveled 921 ft crossing the median, i '74' e. Bound lanes, up a hill, eventually striking a tree where the car became engulfed in flames, burning my sister to death.a witness statement by a semi truck driver stated that he saw sparks coming from the undercarriage.i attended the coroner's inquest where the factual matters were presented including a toxicology report.her death was ruled an "accident".

1999 toyota camry le 4cyl starter failed to disengage from flywheel causing fire. The starter kept running burning it out and also burning the positive cable to the battery. Damage to the battery is under investigation. I was sitting parked in a parking lot with the radio and the air on when i observed smoke coming from the engine then started to come into the car thru the air conditioning. I turned the car off but the smoke continued and the fire dept was called. After looking at the internet this seems to be a widely known issue with multiple postings. I have not seen a recall on this. It needs to be investigated. My insurer said that my claim will be denied due to mechanical failure. Toyota needs to he held accountable.

My daughter was on her way to school on the morning of 3/28/2012, when our 1999 toyota camry started to accelerate on its own. My daughter tried to stop the vehicle by pressing the brake as hard as she could but the car continued to accelerate. She put the car in neutral and the engine's rpm's went to the maximum. The car at that point must have blown a piston rod or valve, oil was spraying inside the engine compartment. She made an attempt to bump the accelerator pedal several times to see if it would release. The car was stalled on a main street with emergency flashers on. She again tried to start the car and rpm's went to the max and the at that point smoke started rising from under the hood. Several people came to see what was going on and tried to help traffic move around the vehicle. I arrived at my daughters location and with the help of others pushed the car several hundred feet into a residential drive way. I have now towed the car back to my home and need help to determine what the root cause for this failure was. I am very reluctantto make repairs to this vehicle knowing that this could happen again. As i review other vehicle acceleration complaints for the same make and model, i want other 1999 camry owners to be aware that this type of acceleration problem can and does occur. We are very lucky our daughter did not suffer any injuries or cause any deaths with this vehicle. The final mileage is at around 162,000.

Toyota has long ignored safety in favor of show.our 1999 camry has a key fob with three buttons, only one working.the problem is that the 'security' system (1) keeps the engine from starting and, (2) more ominously, locks us out of the car.my daughter, with her baby, started the car, stepped out to let it cool in the phoenix summer, and was locked out.fortunately, i was close and, fortunately, she took her baby out with her.over the years, i've asked toyota to fix its security mess.nothing but mild apologies.this endangerment has plagued me and my family for 10 years.toyota's recklessness and aloofness should be punished severely and the company must begin to produce nothing but reliable cars that don't endanger its customers.

My first complaint is the cruise control on my vehicle. When i set it to over 50mph and then try to turn it off, my pedal sticks a little and acts like it doesn't want to release. The second complaint is the burning of oil smell that comes with the pedal sticking. I took the car back to the dealer and they said that the only things they found was a loose hose. It was retightend. I am also having issues with the electrical parts on my rear view mirrors. They are all opposites. Up is down right is left etc. I had gotten a vehicle car facts on the car and only one owner and rear accident was reported. Also i have already replaced my front two tires within a week of purchase and it makes a scraping noise whenever the car is in motion.

Our son was driving our 1999 camry on a major highway when all of the lights came on at once-check engine, check oil, check tires.then there was a ding sound and a loud pop.the car shut off.he was able to move to the shoulder of the highway and exited the car.as he went to open the hood he realized it was on fire.he called 911. The responding state trooper tried to extinguishthe fire but couldn't.by the time the fire department arrived the car was fully engulfed.we have properly maintained our camry at our local garage, who has the records on file.luckily only objects were lost, our son is fine.

While traveling on the highway the battery exploded and acid spilled all over the engine compartment.the dealership is aware of the problem.mr

Consumer was locked inside ofvehicle and without prior warning electrical door lock will not open. Dealership is aware of problem. Consumer was informed that the only problem the dealer could find, was that the battery needed to be replaced.

Dt: the contact's daughter parkedvehicle and pulled the key out of the ignition.the engine continued to run and later stopped on its own.a small amountof smoke came from under the hood.afterwards, she inspected under the hood and discovered the battery cablesmelted between the battery and engine compartment area.the vehicle has not been seen by a dealer.there was no obvious evidence of a fire.

Horn not woking, need to replace steering pad assembly and order left air bag module.they stated due to horn, air bag will not work. Electrical problem with airbag/horn.

We have several problems with this car.the car hesitates when you take off.the dealership has had it (this will make) 5 times since march 31,1999.they have had it for weeks at a time.the brakes make noiseswhen they are applied.they said they replaced the vents but we still have a problem with them.we still, after all those times in the shop, have the same orginal problems as before we ever went to the shop.we have found out that they have even lied to us when we were buying the car.they told us it was a limited edition and it isn't.they were the orginal owners, they were not.they won't give us the name of the orginal owner.(found this out during arbitration)there are several things wrong with this car. And can't find any help on the situtation.please advise.

On three occasions 10/27/00,01/15/01, and 3/19/01 the same problem has occured with my vehicle.my car is currently in the dealer for the 3rd time.on the first occasion the dealer stated that there was no problem found and that they cleared the code.on the second occasion the dealer declared on paper that the vehicle was unsafe to drive and provided a rental car. On this occasion they replaced the coil pack.i have not heard from the dealer yet regarding the issues currently at hand.on all 3 occasions the car has died.this is an extreme safety issue.i have been driving on the freeway at 65 mph and the car has died.i have gone to turn a corner and the car has died. I have gone through an intersection and the car has died. When i go to start the car there is no power and the maximum speed i can drive is approximately 15mph. Both times i have almost got into a major accident do to this problem.i am extremely concerned for my safety and the safety of my family and other drivers on the rode.

When ignition is turned on, engine fails to start and "engine light" comes on.manual says when this happens take it to dealer immediately. This happens without any pattern and may not happen again for a week or two.i took it to stevens creek toyota, 4202 stevens creek blvd, san jose, ca 95129.they could not reproduce the problem and could find nothing wrong.warranty not complied with because they can't diagnose the problem. Sometimes it takes 3 -5 tries before the engine starts.

Multiple times car will not start. The only time fialed at dealer suspect part was the alarm system. Replaced alarm but problem can back 9 months later.

While driving the consumer began to hear a crackling sound.the consumer pulled over and popped the hood and saw that the vehicle was on fire. The vehicle was totaled.the fire department said the fire occurred because of a faulty ignition.please provide any further details.*nlm

Pushed the accelerator, no response from the engine.engine would spontaneously rev- without accelerator being touched.after a 2 hour rest period the car was again driven the same problem occurred.the rpm would rev without the accelerator being pushed, after about 50 feet the engine check light came on.the gas pedal would sometimes engage the engine so we were able to travel a short distance.it was unpredictable as to when the accelerator would work.it would sometimes kick in while the rpm's were reving and the car would jerk forward.i felt it was unsafe to drive.as we were shutting the car off to load it on the tow truck when thecar was shut off, and the keys were still in the ignition, the automatic door locks repeatedly went off- in a rapid motion about 20 times until the keys were removed.the car has been towed to a local dealer.

Electrical system wiring malfunctioned. This resulted in all electrical operated components failing and being inoperative, while driving.there was breakage of the wires that occurred in the wire pack which crossed between the side of the trunk and the hinge of the trunk cover at the point where the wires were flexed due to the opening/closing of the trunk cover.the problem was not immediately found due to no visible deterioration or damage to the wire pack covering at or near the point of breakage.the broken wires were ultimately found by using a faulty locator device.the problem occurred after the items were placed in the trunk, the cover closed and the vehicle was in motion.both the front and rear side windows(which were closed at the time)could not be lowered, the sunroof (opened at the time)could not be closed, the speedometer, tachometer, and engine temperature indicators were all inoperative. *scc

Shifted (automatic transmission) into reverse.fuse blew. Power windows and all dashboard gauges stopped functioning.wiring harness, at the hinge, in the trunk had to be repaired.

The wiring harness powering several rear mounted lights severed completely from its master cable.this harness runs along the left hinge of the trunk lid.the result is that i lost my tail lights, rear side marker lights, backup lights and license plate light.i consider this a safety issue inasmuch as i am subject to a citation for violation of safety requirements.i don't mind replacing consumable items, but a wiring harness should not fail in normal use, especially if it affects safety lights on the vehicle.reference # for my complaint to toyota:200601100356.

While the vehicle was parked it caught on fire under the hood on the left side. The fire was put out by a other family member. The vehicle has been totalled. Please provide any further details.

On the afternoon of february 13, 2007 my wife drove our 1999 toyota camry le 20 miles from our house to agovernment facility where she volunteers as an income tax preparer for the irs through thecity of phoenix.as she was waiting to make a left hand turn into the parking lot of the building the car stalled but she managed to get it started again with the gear shift in neutral and proceeded into the parking lot where the car stalled twice again.she was able to park the vehicle in a parking slot and she went into work.after about 30 minutes my wife was called out to the parking lot where she witnessed the city fire department extinguishing a fire coming from the engine of the camry.the fire completely destroyedand melted the entire engine.a phoenix police officer was parked in the lot prior to the fire and took a statement from my wife after the fire was extinguished.we had the vehicle towed to our residence.the camry had about 65000 miles on the odometer and was running in good condition before the fire.i had routine maintenance performed on the vehicle.there were a few minor problems with the car; the driver door push button lock, the stereo and the parking brake indicator were intermittent. No other indicator lights came on.the camry was purchased from a toyota dealer in august of 2002 as a toyota certified used vehicle.this dealer did not disclose any information about engine gel, the secure key lockand wiring harness defects in the vehicle.we researched the internet and found similar cases of engine fires in 1999 camrys that started after the vehicle was parked and some while they were driving.we only had liability coverage on our camry.we are down to one vehicle and we have suffered a total loss.

While drivingat state speed limit and without warning vehicle caught on fire.

The check engine light came on in may of 1999 they then replaced the transmission and the entired computer system.now the check engine light is on again.

Signal lights and emergency flashers defected (won't flash).replace fuses and under the brake pedal part (don't know the correct name) several times and it work for maybe two weeks, then stop.mechanic stated its an electrical problem; also hear like a frying noise when using signals and sometimes when just driving.inside car light works when it wants too.replace with recommended fuse and works for a day and stops.

The vehicle upon start had got heavy. It would only inch upon heavy acceleration.then suddenly at turning, retained normality and burst forward

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The vehicle was taken to the an independent mechanic but no further information was available. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was 141,000.

1999 toyota camry.consumer writes in regards to engine problems and seeks reimbursement.the consumer stated while waiting for his wife, with the engine idling, with the gear in park and the a/c on high, the engine accelerated abruptly and within 2-3 seconds, there was a loud a noise coming from the engine. He immediately shut the vehicle off, exited the vehicle, and looked under it. The consumer discovered oil on the pavement. The engine had thrown a rod through the pan. The consumer has since sold the vehicle.

The contact owned a 1999 toyota camry. After exiting the vehicle, flames engulfed the front end of the vehicle. The contact extinguished the fire. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries reported. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure.the approximate failure mileage was 200,000.

On march 2, the engine on my toyota camry threw a rod, and resulted in a terminal failure of the engine.i have maintained this car since i bought it, supposedly "certified used" from roseville toyota, in august 2002.i pleaded with toyota motor corporation for assistance but they said that my warranty had expired 2 months prior to this incident.due to extreme strains on my time, i had the engine rebuilt for nearly $3700.upon driving the car for less than 200 miles after having the engine rebuilt, the transmission has failed and needs to be replaced at an estimated $1500.i do not have time or money to continually repair this car and have asked for assistance from both roseville toyota and toyota motor corporation both.it was recently brought to my attention that the toyota that i purchased from roseville toyota was never certified to begin with.they misleadingly sold me a car under the false impression that it was certified when it was not.i place the blame for the recent failures and resultant repair fees on roseville toyota.if i had known that this particular car was not a certified toyota vehicle, i would never have taken it off the lot and consequentially experienced any of the problems described above.however, i was falsely mislead to believe that i was getting a certified vehicle and drove off happily.none of the parts repaired or replaced are available.

Defective automobile, ranging from transmissions problems to paint problems. Engine stalls. *tc

Initial symtoms:engine lights came on;car ran very rough, as if misfiring;white smoke billowed;engine was completely void of oil;response:mechanic flushed oil through engine;refilled engine with 4 quarts oil;changed front 3 sparkplugs;1 week later same symtoms above returned;engine was completely void of oil again;

While driving a loud bang noise was heard and a clanging sound was made from the car. Consumer noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood and immediately pulled over to the side of the road. Vec. Was towed to dealership for inspection on 4/15/04. Consumer was 400 miles over ford warranty. Warranty company has an adjuster come out and look at the vec. 6 or 7 times. Ford knew in the middle of may that the vec. Was over mileage and they continued to lead the consumer and the dealership that they would fix it. Ford dealership and the ford warranty company adjuster both confirmed that the engine failed. 2 bolts that held the piston in place busted and threw a rod through the side of the engine. The same dealership had another camry with 61,000 miles come in while this car was there and had done the exact same thing had happened with it. The vec. Needs a new engine and not toyota nor ford will help us. I have done several searches over this vec. And have found that there has been over 5,000 camrys that have done this exact same thing....1999. They have all been around the same mileage also.

Engine failure.

While traveling on 287 north around edison, nj, my 1999 toyota camry caught on fire without any warning.the fire started from underneath the vehicle.at the time the firefighters responded, 60 percent of the vehicle has been engulfed on fire. *la

At about 3 pm i was driving north on the on ramp of route 15 north at mira mesa. Suddenly my car accelerated and would not stop.i moved to the right where there was room. And despite pushing hard on the brake, i could not stop the car. I moved to the guard rail hoping to slow the car, which il did, but the car bounced off the rail and side swiped a white lexus.then the car came to a stop.a workman saw the accident and confirmed the pattern of what occurred.he checked with me and the driver of the other car and we both said there was no injury.he refused to identify himself.both cars were able to drive away without difficulty.when i got home i checked that the floor mats were in the proper place and not near the accelerator.i feel that there was a defect in the operating system of the car to cause this sudden acceleration.

1999 toyota camry with engine failure. Consumer stated that the vehicle made a loud noise and oil and gasoline odor was present. Consumer then pulled over and engine failed and would not restart.

Blue exhaust smoke and odd engine noice during ignition.i took the car in to cobb county toyota in kennesaw, ga. I took all of my maintenance records and some articles i'd printed out regarding oil gelling, in case they gave me any hassle.i told them i didn't want them to do a flush - he said that toyota wouldn't allow them to do that anyhow, and that they would be taking it apart.he wouldn't even speculate whether or not it was gelling until they took it apart.as such, they wouldn't agree to pay for a rental car until they they confirmed it was gelling. They did take it apart and found that the gelling was limited to the head.without asking for maintenance records (even though i'd had most of my oil changes done by 3rd parties), and completely free of cost to me, they cleaned the head, and replaced the valve stem seals, oil pump, pick-up screen, pvc valve, and valve cover.runs smooth as the day i bought it now (though i did replace the timing belt as well, which i'm sure contributed slightly to the improvement). No rental car was necessary as they had it back to me by the end of the day (i'd taken it in the previous evening).incidentally, i took it in 4 years to the day since i took delivery of it.

While driving on a downward incline, the consumer switched the gears to down shift when the vehicle completely shut down.all systems failed.the dealer wasnotified.phscc

Engine oil sludge buildup at 107000 miles. Other manufacturers don't have this problem. Toyota wants maintenance receipts/oil purchase receipts, proof of ownership.toyota wants to reimburse, if there is an oil gelling related problem. How many do-it-yourselfers keep oil receipts? with today's oils, sludge should not be a problem.

When i tried to start the car it made a loud noise and the engine was dead so my car had to be towed. The block of the engine has hole due to major engine mechanical failure. I had to have the engine replaced.i was told thatthe same kind of problem occurred on the same model year 2000 toyota and they were recalled.

My 1999 toyota camry started blowing blue smoke out of the tail pipe. This was after regular oil changes at 3,000 miles. Finally, while on a business trip and after oil was changed, my engine started making a loud clanking noise. I immediately pulled off the road and turned off the engine. I had a local mechanic look at the engine, who state the engine would need to be replaced. I then paid to have the car towed 200 miles to my house where my mechanic also stated the engine was blown. I have been searching the internet for over a year to find a cost effective engine when at last i found a web site that explains thousands of people have had the same problem i had with sludge oil problems causing engine failure. Why has the nhtsa not issued any recall? i can not believe that the nhtsa is not looking out for the consumer? what is it going to take to get some help for the hard working consumer against the auto giants who know good and well they had a very silent class action notification which did not make it to the majority of the consumers. That action might be good for the board members and stockholders but isn't the nhtsa supposed to look out for the consumer.

Consumer states that while she was driving heard a popping sound, then saw white smoke, soon after that she saw black smoke.she got out of car, and saw sparks coming from under the vehicle, then fire started coming from the engine (front of the auto) part.the fire department was called, and when the fire was put out, the fireman said that it might have been a mixture of oil getting on the hot motor which started the fire.

April 30, 2003on sunday, april 27, 2003 - my 1999 toyota 2.2l 4cyl camry le vin number [xxx] ceased to operate at jfk international airport.the engine with a very loud noise (such has gears under pressure that just gave way) stopped abruptly while smoke came out and the oil spilled all over the place.after having the car towed back to rockland toyota the next day i later was informed that there was a significant sized hole on the engine and was shown broken the pieces.the car was always serviced at rockland toyota since its purchase from toyota north (all based in new york).my camry has had symptoms relating to oil sludge in the engine.persistent drifting/pulling to the left or the right, uneven wear of tires with need for early replacement, premature brake component wear, including rear brake drums, and vibrations, esp. The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph approaching a stop sign when the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle began to roll suddenly as well. When the brakes were engaged, the vehicle failed to slow down so the contact shifted into neutral and then into park which resulted to the vehicle coming to a complete stop. The engine restarted and the vehicle resumed normally. The failure occurred when driving 40 mph and above. The vehicle would not accelerate over 60 mph. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic for diagnosis. The eor sensor, eor solenoid and eor module were replaced on the vehicle. The failure continued. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.updated 4/4/11 the mechanic cleaned the throttle. Updated 06/03/11

While driving a loud banking noise was heard from the front.consumer noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood. Then, vehicle stalled.consumerrestarted vehicle, and pulled over.consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the engine needed replacement due to a blown gasket.

This complaint involves two vehicles; the first was with a 1992 toyota camry vin#[xxx] purchase date:7/16/1992 mileage at the time of the incident:125394 in which the vehicle was idled in the consumers driveway and after two minutes a loud noise was heard along with smoke coming from under the hood; there was motor oil and metal pieces from the engine underneath the vehicle and at 91386k miles the timing belt was replaced;the second vehicle was a 1999 toyota camry;the vehicle stalled while being driven on the freeway at 60 mph, the vehicle was towed to the dealership and the consumer was informed that the water pump had frozen.the consumer requested reimbursement for repairs but the request was denied.a detailed description of problems (vehicle unspecified) :connecting rods#1 and #4 broke and punched holes in the side of the engine block, one of the connecting rods broke off at the piston as well as the crankshaft, the other connecting rod broke off of the crankshaft, but remained attached to the piston, piston #1 and #4 impacted into the cylinder head, when the connecting rods broke, parts of the engine punched a hole in the oil pan, allowing oil to leak out, it was noted that the left cv boots were torn, the broken connecting rod #1 caused the a/c compressor to be broken away from the engine and the a/c belt to be thrown free, and the extent of the damage was consistent with the engine turning at moderate or high speed at the time of the failure.*scinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My engine seized. I've received 2 letters from toyota dated 2/2002 and 6/2002 regarding oil gel.car was towed to dealership- dealership had car "inspected by a no name toyota district rep" dealership said not oil gelrep agrees contacted corporate they agreed with dealership. Sight unseen by customer.napervile toyota 1st goodwill repair included 50% of parts and service.after persuing they agreed to labor cost.toyota mass produced an engine with small valve and learned it was a problem. Corrected it and thousand of consumers are being accuse of low lubricant and not manitenance there automobile correctly .

Dt:the consumer believed the brake problemthe problem concernedabs pump.while drivingthe brakes failed. Every two-three months this problem occurred, at least twenty times.this problem first started inseptember 2001.the first documentation was for may of 2002.there have been several near accidents, but none as of yet.the dealer was unsure of the exact problem because they were unable to find it.they have told the consumer numbers possibilities, but still has not fixed the problem. Also, there was also a problem with the engine. They changed the timing belt because of engine noise.they told the consumer that there was a problem with the water pump and it was changed.the consumer had areport from the dealership. But, not all of the times that vehicle wastaken to the dealer was included in the report.the consumer believed that engine problem was with the valve and the lifters.

8/12/03 heard unusual noise shortly after getting on a highway. Pulled the car to the side and stopped. Found oil all over the place, inside the engine and outside on the ground. A toyota dealer examined the car and said that the "#1 connecting rod" was broken and that it is not customer's fault.we bought toyota camry (4 cylinders) in 1999. We have been following the recommended maintenance schedule at the same toyota dealer. Even 3 weeks before the engine broke down, we had a major maintenance following the advice of the toyota dealer for preventing damage to the engine. As the mileage is over the warrante amount, toyota doesn't pay for the required engine replacement and we hope they do. It's not fair to let us pay as we haven't done anything wrong.

1999 toyota camry 140,000 miles routine oil changes threw a rod for no apparent reason.dealer charged $127.00 to pull the valve cover.dealer told me they have no idea why the engine failed but it was not oil gelling.they denied my oil gelling claim even though i showed receipts for the oil changes.

Headed south on interstate when burst into flame.

While driving on the road and heard loud clanging sound and then saw lots of smoke. Service engine light came on and i pulled over. I turned the car off and opened the hood. There was a hole in the side of the engine and oil was all over. Car had 66,000 miles on it and was 400 miles over the extended warranty. Took to toyota dealer and they determined that there was no sludge or gel in the engine. Car was well maintained and there was nothing i could have done to cause this. Warranty company is fighting us on fixing the vec. And toyota will not do anything either.this happened on april 15, 2004 and it is now july 7, 2004. Toyota dealership still has my car.

Oil gel in engine and engine light constantly on. I have all oil changes made on time. Toyota do not want to own up to problem with oil gel. I can be reached on (202)708-0614 x2454. I will send entire letter in mail to you immediately for your review.thanks.sandra edwards

Oil sludge problem. Engine makes noise

On 9/8/2001 i had the 30,000 mile maintenance performed on my 1999 toyota camry.on july 7,2002, the water pump failed and damaged the timing belt.i had to replace the water pump, timing(camshaft belt) , several additional belts, idler , tensioner and anti-freeze.labor and parts totaled $710.44.this is the 5th occurance of a water pump failing on a 1999 toyota camry with under 45,000 miles that was reported on this web site alone.the powertrain warranty covers the water pump for 60 months or 60,000 miles.i have sent a certified letter to toyota , which they have received but have not received a response from them.the water pump should last more that 45,000 mile and with the number of failures that have occured, there is a trend that there is a problem with this part.i

While driving on interstate hwy water pump failed causing timing belt and idler to also fail and damage to oil pump.

While driving 45 mph consumer noticed smoke coming from underneath hood, vehicle was towed to mechanic that indicated water pump had bursted. Please provide further details.

Excessive wear of brake pads and front rotors; at 10,000 miles dealer had to replace front rotors and pads.currently, at 21,000 miles, problem reoccurred. Problem with headlight not aligned.dealer informed that vehicle met manufacturer's specification and nothing else could be done. Also, water pump failure.dealer notified, and repairs being made.consumer states that the transmission fluid is not good and toyota refuses to test the fluids.

Consumer has to takevehicle intodealership forbrakes every three to four months. There was a grinding noise at this point. Dealer is aware of the problem, brake pads have been replaced several times due to premature wear, master cylinder was out of adjustment, rotors were replaced.vehicle stalled due to water pump failure the water pump came apart and broke the timing belt.

Additional info to odi number 765034 - shop mentioned that the water pump damaged caused scrapping on the engine block.since the engine block is made of an aluminum base his concern was that the marks might cause a crack to occur.he said no leaking was seen at this time but i want to put on record that damage was made to the engine that might cause problems in the furture.this scraping was due to the water pump failure that was noted in the odi number 765034 questionnaire.this info was also mentioned to toyota in a certified letter but i have not received any response yet from toyota.

On 6-16-01, i was on my way home when my car suddenly lost power.i wasn't able to stop the vehicle.in order to stop it, i had to apply the emergency brake.i had the vehicle towed to the dealership where i purchased it from.it has been there ever since.i found out today that the water pump froze up on it and broke the timing belt.the salesman who sold me my car told me that he has heard of many owners of the camry who have experienced the same problem that i'm experiencing.he told me that the car is pretty much unsafe, so i traded it in and bought a corolla today.i had no intention of trading in my car.i would like to know if toytoa knew about the failed water pump/timing belt in their camrys'.and if so, why didn't they let the public know about how dangerous this could be?i leased my camry and toyota is making me pay for remainder of the lease.therefore, i am paying two car notes.i would like for them to reimburse me for the money i lost in this deal.

Car overheated. Drove to toyota dealer where it was diagnosed as a radiator problem. This car has 51000 miles on it.

Problem with 1999 toyota camry:in trying to pass a vehicle on a country road, the engine literally blew a hole.the rpm was just a little over 4,000.thankfully, there was no vehicle coming from the other side and the other drivers on my side quickly slowed down to let me come back to my side of the road.otherwise there could have been a major accident.

Failure of valve seals and engine varnish at only 62,000 miles.vehicle was properly maintained oil changes within mfg. Specs.this engine runs too hot! only 2000 miles out of warranty toyota refused help, overcharged for repair, and charged for an oil change that was never done!!!!*la

The engine stalled.

My camry showed the exact 3 signs of oil gel list in settled class action suit: excessive oil consumption, blue smoke, & engine light on. Settled class action settlement says toyota should fix/pay. Toyota inc. Denied claim. Class action settlement clearly includes my 1999 toyota camry 4cyl. Toyota should authorize the $3000 of repairs needed on my camry and should pay for the repairs as they were directed to by a court of law.i'm just glad i noticed the 3 signs of oil get & brought it to a nearby dealership service department before something terrible happened to my family.in minnesota last week, one camry-owning family was not as fortunate:during rush-hour on one of minnesota's busiest highways, a toyota camry came to a full stop and was rear-ended by a semi. As a result of injuries sustained when the family's camry was rear-ended, a 4 year old girl died.i don't know if that camry was one of the camrys covered in the oil gel lawsuit. I do know that if it's one of the toyota camrys that has engine damage that, if undetected by owner, will cause the engine to seize at highway speeds. These camrys do come to a complete stop on freeways.

The engine light came on, the dealer discovered, the charcoal canister needed to be replaced. The consumer stated that this was a defect part that is covered under federal emissions control. *tc

I purchased a 1999 toyota camry in january 01.approximately, 18 months later, my vehicle suffered engine failure.i was advised by the toyota dealership that the damage was due to excessive sludge in the engine.i completed regular oil changes and maintenance on this vehicle.additionally, the warranty only partially paid for the damage.i was forced to pay about $2400.even though my warranty should have covered everything less the $500 deductible.i have been informed that toyota recognized this problem and said that it would pay for these damages.i am interested in investigating if i can have the funds i paid refunded to me.

Several times oil would backup into the engine or excessive oil would be used.when the consumer pulled into a gas station the vehicle caught fire and exploded.the cause of the failure was questionable and the dealership needed to replace the engine. *nlm

The engine light illuminated on the dashboard. The dealer replaced the sensor, however the problem recurred.

1999 toyota camry check engine light came on. The consumer had the oil changed, air fuel ratio sensor replaced, front brake pads and rotors replaced but none of those repairs solved the problem.the dealer suggested that since the consumer 's vehicle wasn't driven much that carbon may have been building up in the valve area.the dealer cleaned the valve area and cleaned the throttle body and fuel injection but the check engine light came on again. ***no ans required***

Starting in dec. '03, i heard fluid circulating throughout the engine in my "99 toy. Camry (v6), esp. From a stop.the toy. Dealer told me my coolant level was low, but found no leaks, and added more coolant.several weeks later, the sound came back and became worse.the car began to idle rough and the temperature gauge ran high.i had the car towed to another toy. Dealer, who informed me that i had a blown head gasket, which in turn caused severe engine damage.i had to have a new short block installed, along with a new oil pump and water pump.

While driving at 45mph and with no warning consumer could hear a loud noises coming fromengine. Then vehicle shut off, causing consumer to pull over. Dealer notified.

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry.the contact stated that her vehicle caught fire without warning.she parked the vehicle and one half hour later, the police arrived to find that the fire department had extinguished the fire.the dealer stated that they have never heard of this before.a police report was filed.the engine size and powertrain were unavailable.the current and failure mileages were 42,000.updated 06/08/07.

I bought this car as a used "programed car" in february, 2000.it has approximately 35,000 miles on it.it has driven just fine up until february 24, 2002.it all of a sudden started to have clear liquid like smoke emit from the rear exhaust pipe.i had just filled the car up with gas.i was able to get the car to my mechanic the next day.my mechanic told me that i had a "blown head gasket".this is very, very unusual for toyotas.i have owned toyotas for over 16 years now, and have never had this type of a problem in a new car.after my mechanic has the opportunity to go over the car, he confirmed that it was indeed the "head gasket".i asked him what would cause a "head gasket" to go out on a fairly new toyota?i have always been very prompt with my general upkeep on my cars, regular oil changes, tire rotations, and other necessary filter changes.my mechanic said, it's a good posibility that the head gasket could have been defective.he asked me to check with someone to see if there has been a recall on any 1999 toyota camarys.is this the type of information that i can get from you, or do i need to contact the corporate headquarters for toyota?please call or e-mail me you response as quickly as possible.time is of the essence.

Dt:while driving the vehicle threw a rod.this caused the vehicle to catch on fire on september 23, 2005.there was a report takenby the fire department, but the consumer was unsure if a police report was taken.there was no previous warning before this occurred.the vehicle was towed to a mechanic.they did not tell her what they thought caused it, only that it was not due to sludge build up in engine. There were no injuries.

1999 toyota camry.while traveling, the driver claimed to have heard a noise and lost the ability to steer the vehicle. The driver went off the left side of the road, struck a median barrier, came back across three lanes, went off the right side of the road, struck a guardrail and then came to rest partially in the right lane. According to the wrecker the driver, there was nothing wrong with the steering. However, there was damage to the engine that was not a result of the crash and that could have possibly caused a problem with the steering.(ohio traffic crash report # 10-0359-90) updated 08/05/10

The vehicles engine siezed due to oil gel. *nlm

I have a 1999 toyota camry. I changed my oil consistently before every 2500 miles or 3 months, however the oil in my engine still "slugged" or "gelled". I visited my local toyota dealership to have it fixed and they informed me that the problem was common amongst toyota camry's and that they could not cover the engine damage for me unless i provided receipts as proof that i changed my oil every 2500 miles or 3 months since the day i purchased the car. I had not been keeping my receipts as my fiance would often change my oil for us. Needless to say, i had to spend over $2,000 replacing my engine only to later find out that the problem was much more common and severe than i had been told and that toyota does in fact recognize the defect and offers to fix it complimentary. I learned this while i was out car shopping (at a different dealership) since i no longer feel safe on the road in my unsuitable toyota camry.my old engine has been replaced but the new one is not working properly. My mechanic told me it's because the defective part that caused the engines to gel up has now been removed from replacement engines. There is now a noticeable banging noise coming from my engine. I am completely disgusted with the way i was treated by my local toyota dealership. I was sold a car with a known history of defective engines and the car manufacturers refuses to fix it for me. What type of scam is this?

Getting check engine light too frequently on a toyota camry 1999 model. Had to replace charcoal canister and the problem still persists

While driving approximately 25 mph heard loud noise coming from the engine. Thisforceddriver to pullof the road. Then, called triple aaa, and towed vehicle to the dealer. Technician stated the need toreplace the engine. Consumer had navigated in different websites and found 5000 identical problems.

While vehicle was moving at a speed of 60 mph andengine inadvertently locked up.

While driving at approximately 65 mph going uphill on expressway, we heard a loud noise from the engine compartment, followed immediately by smoke and flame.by the time we go to the shoulder of the road, we had no brakes, no steering, nothing was working.car was totally covered in smoke and flames were intense.another vehicle stopped within seconds of our pulling over with a medium sized fire extinguisher.he proceeded to lay on his back and totally empty the extinguisher from under the car, which made no difference.by the time the fire trucks arrived (within 10 minutes), the entire engine compartment was totally burned.i notice that you have closed out pe02-079, but believe it to be related.the car is under investigation by state farm insurance.the car hada major service at 67,000 miles, including a timing belt replacement on july 24th, 2003.the car had approximately 70,000 miles at the time of the incident.*la

Vehicle's engine failed and caught on fire.*mr theconsumer was traveling on the highway whenthe engine caught fire. Dealership indicated the consumer was the one responsible for the fire. They stated the cause was: lack of oil, which caused the bearings to wear out.throw rod, #3 bearing rod spun and caused it to break the rod. It went through the block and allowed oil to cover the engine compartment and ignite, starting a fire and melting some of the compartments. *ph

The radiator was empty, and here were traces of antifreeze on the inspection plug on the timing over.as i explained upon our intial meeting, this indicated that there was a definite loss of antifreeze, with a definite possibility of water pump failure and corresponding timing belt failure.however, when i did the initial tear-down of the timing area, i found a rather surprising scenario.the timing belt was intact.there were none of he usual oil leaks from the cam/crank seals.the belt was in excellent shape.the water pump had suffered a catastrophic bearing failure.in fact, i found pieces of metal in the timing area, as well as a few of the ball bearings from the water pump shaft bearing.the timing area also had traces of antifreeze (oem antifreeze) from where the water pump had been leaking prior to the failure.as per our discussion, i proceeded to tear the engine down further to inspect for other possible damage.at this time, we were simply expecting to find a warped/possibly cracked cylinder head.upon removing the necessary components required to remove the head, and removing the head itself, i inspected the block, cylinders, and pistons.the inspection revealed that the pistons had suffered severe damage.there is over thirty thousandths of clearance between the top edge of the piston and the cylinder wall.the top piston ring is clearly visible.therefore, i must declare the engine a loss. In fact, i have made the observation that toyota vehicles using the oem antifreeze usually had far fewer cooling system problems of any kind.in their vehicles.i have two toyota pickups.one has a reman engine.it has oem antifreeze and an oem oil filter.to make a long story short, i feel in my opinion, and my experience, that this problem is a manufacturer defect.what the manufacturer can and will do for you i do not know.

While driving at highway speeds, a clicking noise was heard and then smoke startedto come from under the hood.the vehicle lost power.the consumer viewed flames under the hood.*scc

Consumer was traveling about 25mph on a side street traveling onto another street, and without prior warning, vehicle took off and hit two vehicles. Consumerhadfeet onbrakes, and vehicle continued to move.dealershipwasaware ofproblem.consumer also experienced this same problem a year ago, however was able to pull over and stop vehicle, for this last accident, dealer replaced gasket and cleaned throttle body.

I bought my camry brand new and have always kept up with the regular maintenance scheduled. However, over the years i've had to have the charcoal canister replaced at least three times and valves replaced twice. On oct. 4th while driving on the freeway, with no forewarning, i heard a loud noise and followed by a plume of white/blue smoke. The engine immediately shut off and i was able to pull over on the shoulder in time to avoid and accident.the resulting total engine failure caused me to have to have the car towed.now i'm discovering that this has been an ongoing problem with my kind of engine and it was quietly settled with those who have the 2000 year engines. The same problem existed in the 1999's and has been totally ignored. This is awful!

While pulling inside of a parking space the vehicle stalled.the driver tried to restart the vehicle but was only able to start the vehicle by applying the accelerated and brake.then the vehicle started.the driver was able to drive it home.the driver contacted the dealer for an appointment.please provide any additional information.

While driving my 1999 toyota camry onto the on ramp to the veterans expressway, the engine made a loud bang and smoke came out of the engine.the engine stopped!i had bought this car new in 1999,and it only has 44,000 miles on it. It is in super condition, except now it has a hole in the engine. If this had happened on the expressway, i would have been killed!!! a certified mechanic said that the piston rod cap bolthad broken and the rod blew a hole in the engine. The toyota dealer and toyota national said that i must pay to have this fixed. It needs a whole new engine!!i feel that it must be a defect or this would not happen at 44,000 miles.i have always had all of the maintenance requirements done. This is certainly a dangerous defect, because if your car seizes up and stops in traffic, you do not stand a chance. I've read where others have had the same problem. Why hasn't toyota recalled this? it is certainly just as dangerous as the problems that they did recall cars for.

The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for a tune up and after the tune up the dealer took the vehicle for a test drive and the engine blew out.the dealer informed the consumer they would replace the engine.there was knocking, the vehicle would not run.the original motor rod had come apart.there was no sign of misuse.the oil was okay and there was no sign of why the rod had come apart. *sc

Engine blew out on freeway.engine failure diagnosed as sludge build up leading to thrown rod and crankshaft.rod busted through crankcase.my 1999 toyota camry was one of toyota's flawed engine designs suffering from a known oil gel build up problem - *5s-fe four cylinder and 1mz-fe v-6 engines.

This problem involves the buildup of oil sludge in the 1998-2001 toyota v6 products. Apparetnly they redesigned the v6 engine so that it would fit in the sienna van. In doing so they created a design flaw that creates sludge in the engine. Apparently the design flaw causes the engine to run to hot also causing valve seals to leak. The result is a fairly new car that smokes,burns1 quart of oil a week, and builds up sludge in the engine which i am told will ruin the engine if i keep driving with sludge build up because the engine won't be lubricated properly. Many others are reporting this sludge problem. In the 1999 owners manuel it says you can change the oil every 7500 miles. Which people did. These customers that followed this guide line instead of the 3000-5000 mile oil changes which should be recommended now have oil sludge. I called my honda service rep who told me toyota has a fix for the overheating problem which they do not want the general public to know about because than they will have to fix thousands of cars. He said the engine does not breath properly and that they have an upgrade to the breather - the positive crank case?? he said if i can prove to toyota such an upgrade is available they will fix it but will deny any knowledge otherwise. I submit that toyota should have to repair the vehicles that have gotten sludge from thisdefect while under warranty and that toyota should be forced to do a recall and install the upgraded part so that their engines breathe properly. Toyota refuses to honor my warranty on replacing the valve seals and rings which will cost me about $3200. The least they could do is install the fix intomy engine so if i do get it fixed it won't happen again. Toyota has changed their 2001 owners manuel telling people to change the oil every 5000 miles so they know the direction to change it every 7500 miles will not work for thei esitb because i have sludge and t of lydthgit otherwise. Isienoice lkhe haspd satoyota even has.

The check engine light came on in may of 1999 they then replaced the transmission and the entired computer system.now the check engine light is on again.

While driving, there was a loud sound and vehicle lost all power, smoke began to come through the vents, the driver and passenger exited the vehicle, the fire started in the engine and burned to the back seat area.(claim#48-5188-694)

This car is a lemon.i have had five integrated relay's replaced and now it is out again.the headlight or the dash lights will work, but not both at the same time.toyota said it was because i had a non-factory alarm installed.they replaced the alarm with a toyota alarm and replaced the relay and it burned out the following day.they can't find the problem.the air conditioner has had a musty smell since the car was new.they spray the vents with "frigi fresh" and it's fine for a few days and the smell returns.they told me to spray simple green in the air intake once a week.that's a pretty poor remedy.the transmission will not hold on any incline.sometimes the car will pull into the garage by it self and other times it will roll into the street.it depends on it's mood.the car lack power.some days the car is peppy but most days it's a old mule.i went through arbitration and toyota just keeps replacing parts instead of replacing the car.it's sits in the garage now because is not dependable.i think there needs to be an in-depth investigation and recall of the 1999 camry.

While driving on the highway consumer heard a loud ban. ,after pulling overconsumer noticed there had been an explosion and fire.

Had i not gotten my family out of the car promtly and taken all appropriate actions, the results of the fire could have been much worse.fire investigator stated oil dripped onto exahust manifold after explosion causing fire.i wonder, could a drip shield have prevent the fire?i was feathering the accelerator when the engine blew-up.could the combination of feathering and higher speed have caused an control situation that caused the explosion?it looks like the part failed in a rotating part of the engine. What would have happened if the part failedin a different direction; would ther have been any risk to passengers or pedestrians?

Engine sludge issue continues even after repair and proper maintenance.

At highway speedsvehicle stalled out and died without warning.after inspection ofvehicle mechanic discovered thatengine locked up due to lack of lubrication.

While driving 5 mph, vehicle stalled. Stopped vehicle and got out, and vehicle caught on fire. Dealer contacted.

On march 21,2005 i gave my tyota camry ce 1999 with 103,000 miles on it for tune up to door's auto speed shop. The next day, after the tuneup was comletedthe mechanics took the car for a test drive. During the drive below 40 miles per hour the engine blew up. Mr. Keith door, the owner and manager of the shop, called the local toyota of slidell and informed them that the engine blew up because of the accumulation of the sludge in the engine. They agreed to change the engine free of charge. Later, however, they demanded $4,000 for the new engine claiming that the cause of the blowup was not the sludge.they could not tell, however, why the engine blew up.

When the insured pulled the vehicle into the road, another vehicle hit the right front side of insured's vehicle, after the impact, a fire appeared to have started from the passenger side and started to smoke then ignited. Claim number 52-2323-385.

Engine seized up at 31,920 miles. Dealer statescar needs a new engine because sludge was found in the oil pan, indicating poor engine maintenance.i have complete maintenance records on the vehicle, but toyota is not interested in seeing them.

1999 toyota camry (vin # [xxx]).july 7th ,2002 , the water pump failed and causedthe camshaft belt (timing belt) and other belts and pulleys to be damaged. The standard toyota water pump is warranted for 60 months or 60,000 miles.since my car is only 40 months old and has only 41,562 miles, it falls well within the coveragei have checked the internet page for the national highway traffic safety administration web page( www.nhtsa.dot.gov) and for this year and model. There are many reports of this same event occurring. I have contacted toyota case # 200208090013.i have contacted the customer center about 15 times to supply all the necessary paperwork and support documents they requested , but they refuse to document why the case was denied.this case also connects to odi number 765034.dtinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

As i was driving to work, at 7:30 am on thursday april 22, 2004, i noticed a clicking sound coming from under my auto's hood.the auto was a 1999 toyota camry, with about 90,100 miles on it.the clicking noise reminded me of a spinning roulette wheel.after a few minutes, the noise increased in intensity.at that point, i decided that i needed to go to a repair facility to have it examined.as i was doing that, there was a loud, explosion-like noise and the engine started smoking very heavily.i pulled off the road, at which point, i gathered up some important items from my car, and exited the vehicle.by this time, there were flames coming out from under the hood.i called 911 and advised the dispatcher of my circumstances and location.the connecticut state police arrived within three minutes of my call.they tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but were unable to do so.by the time the fire department arrived, 10 minutes later, the engine compartment was completely engulfed in flames and smoke.they were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but by that time, the car was ruined.a few minutes later, a tow truk removed the vehicle to a nearby garage.i called my insurance company and filed a claim.they have since declared the vehicle a total loss and are in the process of remitting my settlement.

Consumer stated while driving, there was a rattle sound coming from under the vehicle, the dealer adjusted the exhaust heat shields, consumer also complained of an odor coming from the catalytic converter, however dealer could not duplicate consumers concern.

I have a 1999 toyota camry with approx. 89,000 mile and the check engine light came on and i am told that the charcoal canister needs to be replaced at a cost of $ 294 parts and 190 labor.upon checking the internet to see if this was a legitimate repair it seems this problem is prevalent on many toyota models including mine.

The check engine light came on, due to a faulty gas cap.the engine light was intermittent.the light went off and did not come back until 31,602k miles. *sc when the light illuminated again, the consumer was told the emissions canister needed to be replaced.

Dealer has informed me that the charcoal canister assembly has been a persistent problem.new parts are being manufactured.my car has been in the shop for 2.5 weeks already after three attempts to fix it.

I have a 1999 toyota camry le v6 and check engine light is coming on.toyota dealer tells me it's that the charcoal canister needs replacement, so i did and the light is back on again.i know there are lots of people with this issue and we need to have toyota address the issue asap.

Began with a ticking sound from under the car. The ticking sound was audible while the car was idling, and after the car was turned off.this problem has been going on since 2/99.i took it to dealer 3-23-99. Technician said it was normal to occasonally hear this noise while idling, because of the heat produced by the catalytic converter.although not normal for it to continuously make the noise throughout time the car is on. Technician said he would order an entire new exhaust system for the car.the parts are in, and replacement is scheduled for march 31, 1999, at evans toyota.i was told it was safe to drive until then.

Oil light came on, took to station added oil, had oil changed w/i 2 days told pcv valve bad, had changed, car smoked, took to dealer told oil in valves could have been antifreeze in oil or when told oil was changed it was not, maunfacture says improper maintance will only cover $1000 of approx. $4000 repair.oil changed at least every 7500 as recom. In manual. Should be fully covered by warranty.

The engine has been emitting a strong burning smell for almost a month. After driving, a have a headache and feel dizzy for several hours. My wife refuses to drive the car. Two weeks ago, the dealer claims he removed a plastic bag from the exhaust system, but the smell continues with the same intensity. The smell exists in the passenger compartment while driving and standing in several places at the front hood with the ignition turned off. I took the car to the dealer again yesterday; they claim plastic is still burning its way through the exhaust system. Not acceptable.

Major "bottoming out" problem when car is carrying 4 adults.vehicle actually bangs down onto pavement when rolling over the smallest speedbump or exiting driveway. Dealer notified & replaced front struts 9/16/1999.have yet to "test" new parts. Airconditioner reeks of strong odor since 1st use.reported to dealer who used a spray in the aircon but system still smells strongly. Have not reported abs brake situation to dealer as this has occurred 3x. Have never had abs brakes before & thought it was "normal." if stopping very suddenly, entire vehicle shudders and vibrates. Has not happened recently as a short-stopping situation has not arisen.do not know if brake/vehicle shudder is normal?

There is a sqeak coming from the front end when i go over small bumps/dips in the road.toyota recommended the replacement of tie rods, which did absolutely nothing.the noise continues and has increased in severity.the air conditioner smells when using it.it smells like mold.i have taken it to the dealer, but all they do is spray it with frigi-fresh, which only masks the smell for a short while.

Vehicle caught on fire, the initial inspection indicated a fire occuring in the engine compartment of the vehicle, the fire originated at the exhaust manifold heat shield, the fire transferred from this area to the front and to the interior portion of the vehicle, it was finally determined that the loss resulted from the separation of the air conditioning suction line at the evaporator, allowing refrigerant and pag oil to be expelled on to the exhaust manifold, igniting and resulting in the damages observed.

Vehicle rolls backwards on any sort of incline.the transmissions will not hold the car on a hill even when the transmission is in drive.dealer stated this was a "normal operating condition.the transmission has zero drag for best gas mileage and is not designed to hold car without throttle pressure."the dealer has not been able to correct this problem.

Consumer concerned with entrapment in the vehicle due to a faulty electronic actuator for the keyless entry system.*ph*mr

Brakes squeak/ pull toleft and warp. Also, cd player doesn't work, had 4 cds replaced/ springs in side ofsun roof are broken and make noises, andregulator replaced inside ofwindows. This car is definetly a lemon ive put more money into than the car is worth and still doesnt work the dealer rock chevrolet knew of issues with this car but still sold it tried to have it fixed thru them but they were rude and wouldnt do it.

Rear tail light housing melted from the heat of the bulb. Bulb had been changed half of dozen times since we bought car. I am a little displeased with my 1999 toyota camry. I bought it as a certified used car with 19,300 miles. Already, i have shelled out 450.00 for the replacement of the rotors, disc pads, and assembly. The drivers side window had failed before, and i had them replace the whole assembly. The dash lights just failed recently, as well as one of the rear lights burned out in nov.i logged a complaint with toyota cust. Service center, but i still feel that this car is a lemon. What new 1999 car with 30,000 miles has had this many failures? please send me any other info that might pertain to this, or any info you hear back. Itr would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to be taking my car in for major service every year!!!

Exterior lighting:headlights. Recall number 09e025000. Can you please let me know can i get recall for my headlights? i am not getting good lighting.

The front headlights do not illuminate road properly.they have been adjusted by the dealer at least four times.the lights still do not illuminate the road properly and are a safety concern.front suspension shakes aggresively (often at highway speeds) making driving very dangterous.several attempts to correct by dealer.problem still occurs.all four tires wore completely out in less than 12,000 miles.front end pulled strongly to right.dealer tried to corred several times.front end now pulls to the left.rear end "bangs" and "bottoms out" often while at speed.dealer suggested that this safety concern is "typical" of this car.the transmission has failed to hold car while on an incline at least twice.was not able to duplicate for dealer.rear door has never closed properly.dealer has attampted several reapirs.door still "creeks and pops" when opened.

Headlights are very dimmed, dealership is aware of problem, consumer feels the lights are too far back.

Vehicle experiences ongoing problem with headlights unableto adjust properly. Left side always appears to be adjusted too far down, more then the right side. Vehicle been in/out of dealer shop on five occasions, and nothing can be found wrong.

Headlight lens deteriorate to point vehicle not safe to drive after dark.due to improper material used in headlight lens the materialbecomes dark until no longer safe to operate.

Headlight switch does not alter headlights regardless of position.

Consumer stated the left blinker was flashing faster than normal, the dealer replaced the bulb.

Turn signal blinks very rapidly when headlights are turned on.speed returns to normal when the steering wheel is turn. Signals operate normally when the headlights are off.i've noticed this on my father's 1998 camry and on another driver's camry (1998-2001 model?- same body style as mine).i'm afraid the signals will stop working, which is especially worrisome in traffic or at night.

Turn signal blinks very rapidly when headlights are turned on. Speed returns to normal when the steering wheel is turn. Signals operate normally when the headlights are off.

This car is definetly a lemon ive put more money into than the car is worth and still doesnt work the dealer rock chevrolet knew of issues with this car but still sold it tried to have it fixed thru them but they were rude and wouldnt do it.

Rear strut is causing vehicle to act up. When the vehicle is 3/4full, vehicle will make a thumping sound.especially when backing up &accelerating.dealer knows of problem.

I have a 1999 toyota camry, le, that the gas pedal continuallysticks.i have to hold the gas pedal when it sticks and press down, sometimes hard, on the gas pedal to continue forward.my daughter has driven the car and almost was rear ended when she couldn't get the car to move.

Vehicle stalls intermittently at any speed and possibly due to fuel pump which blows a fuse. Please provide further information.

1999 toyota camry - for no apparent reason started on fire as i was driving on the highway - pedal felt like it collasped and fire appeared instantly giving smokestraight at driver & passengers barely making the right side of the highway beforecompletelytotalling car

Car was being driven on a gravel road. The inside of the car filled with smoke rapidly and without any previous indication of problem or warning. All gauges registered normal. Driver exited the car and saw fireballs falling from under the hood. The car was totally burnedand was a total loss. The main point is that there was no previous problems with the car and it had been maintained per the manufacturers specs. We are not sure of what caused the fire, but had to be related to fuel since it burned so fast.

Consumer had a defective gas tank. When she bought the vehicle it was fine.as soon as the gas tank is three quarters full it makes clunking noise.when dealer test drove vehicle it had almost no gas in the tank. Gas tank wa sreplacedwith a tank from camry on13/08/1999, and it still does the same thing.

Fuel is being pushed through the air check valve incalifornia smog system, which is allowing fuel to flow onto engine components that heat up during operation ofvehicle. There will be puddles of fuel undervehicle when it is parked in one position, which could be considered a fire hazard. Dealership has been contacted and refused to assist the consumer.please provide any additional information/attachments/photographs.

I have a "1999" toyota camry that on the way to work yesterday had the engine begin racing and the brakes were barely able to stop it. I had to put the vehicle in park while the engine continued to race. I got out and checked floor mats and worked the gas pedal by hand and the engine continued to race. I shut off the engine and tried restarting it and the engine immediately began racing again. I managed to move it off the road and into a gas station and had someone from inside come out just to witness it as i couldn't believe it was happening. I opened the hood and manually worked what i call the throttle control and was able to rotate in but the engine continued to race. Only turning the engine off would stop the racing. I repeated these steps at least 3 times and upon the last engine start up the engine idled normally. I had driven for a short time before and i feel certain that the speed control was controlling the speed until i took it off. At first thought my brakes were bad as they weren't stopping the car well. Then i noticed it was actually accelerating on it's on. I understand this was not supposed to happen on this year of vehicle and that is what the local service people told me when i called them. However, i am very wary that there is an electronic aspect to the problem and even if it is some other problem known or not known to toyota it is a very dangerous problem to have and never to have known about myself.

This seem to be a common problem to 1999 toyota camry. Isc valve just die off for no reason and no signs of any broken .car can not be started when this valve is defected. Even if car can be started, it will be very shakey.dt

Experiencing this problem on 1999 toyota camry component: structure:door assembly:latches and lockspower door lock system can failed, causing the contacts to "weld", and resulting in door lock solenoid damage, with failure of the door to lock or unlock, even under manual operation.consequence: if the door fails to open after ecu failure, vehicle occupants would have increased difficulty exiting the vehicle in an emergency.

My husband went to open the door of my 1999 camry and it broke off in his hand. Now it i cannot get in the door if an emergency occurs, i feel unsafe when getting in my car at night, particularly when i have to work late ,at a mall or the grocery store. It is going to cost $150 or more to replace this handle. I don't think we should have to do that when i have talked to several camry owners and they have had the same problem and toyota has known about this. They need to fix the problem for nothing because i am in danger everytime i have to enter my car. In addition, having to open the door by grasping the metal part and then sticking my hand underneath, can injure my hand. This may not seem like a safety concern to them but it is to me.

The driver's side door latch would keep sticking. Happens when door is either locked or unlocked from outside or inside.

Consumer stated that it will be hard to open thefront driver side door from the inside. Dealernotified.

1999 toyota camry driver's door handle broke off on opening the door (without using excessive force). This could be a hazard if someone needed entrance to the car in an emergency. The handle is a surprisingly thin plastic. The toyota mechanic told me it was a known problem. An independent repair shop said the same.

Outside door handles broke, andinside door handles have snapped and rotted.

Consumer had mechanic check the hand brake, complaining it feels loose.*jg

The parking brake light illuminates whenever you turn left or right.sometimes it even illuminates at acceleration.

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry. The contact stated that the shift lever failed to shift into gear without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the shifter cable needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 180,000.

The gas pedal sticks, as if it is rubbing against something about 1/3 the way down pressed.this happens intermittent and can't figure out when or why and it is not the floormat.the vehicle has over 100,000 miles on it.if you tap it, when it sticks, it will come unstuck.i believed the car was getting old, my car, but now my wife complains it happens to her when she drives it.

1999 toyota camry 4 cylinder with 83,500 miles (one owner) blew a piston through the engine block as a result of accelerating from about 69 to 73 mph on a busy turnpike, completely destroying the engine and sending black smoke and oil all over the highway. The car had been regularly maintained and there had never been any mechanical problems nor was oil gel/sludge ever noticed as an issue by the mechanics.

Consumer was traveling about 55mph on the highway, she applied gas pedal to speed up,andvehicle started to roar andslowdown.consumer was trying to get over to the shoulder of the road, but vehicle stalled and washit by oncoming truck.vehicle was in the shop for a month and a half. Mechanic toldconsumer that she needed a new transmission.

Transmission slipped and unexpectedly engaged causing car to lurch forward.yh

Vehicle will jump out of gear into neutral while traveling at any speed. Dealership examinedvehicle, and informed consumer that cable running from gear shift totransmission assembly is exposed to environmental elements, causing transmission to jump out of gear.please provide any additional information/attachments.

After parking my car and placing it in park, it suddenly launched forward crashing into a restaurant.i am certain that it was in park.are there similar reported incidents?could this be related to nhtsa campaign id:01v012000.

Transmission slipped and unexpectedly engaged causing car to lurch forward.yh

While going up a hill heard a loud noise when vehicle was changing gears. Also, when driving in reverse. Dealer has been contacted. Technician stated transmission needed to be replaced. Please provide further information.

Indicator for the position of the gear shift is located on the floor and is impossible to view most of the time due to its' small size and is indistinct due to reflections in the plexiglass ocover on the console.

My 1999 toyota camry needed it's second clutch replacement. The first was at about 33k and now another at 78k. Why are the clutch going so fast. We have another vechicle 1993 acclaim with 170k. We have driven manual all our life with no problems untill this toyota.

Consumer stated the check engine light illuminated, when accelerating from first gear the vehicle would not move and the engine rpms went high, the dealer diagnosed the problem as a malfunctioned solenoid.

Rear driver-side passenger seat-belt has failed.automotive:toyota camry ce, 4 dr, 1999 model, black. Automatic transmission.

Seat belt broke when installing child car seat.

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry.the contact noticed that the front driver's side seat belt would not properly latch into the buckle.she took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that it would cost $200 to repair the seat belt assembly.the vehicle has not been repaired.she is in the process of notifying the manufacturer.the failure and current mileages were 90,000.

Consumer tried to install a child safety seat into the vehicles rear seat, vehicle was designed with switchable seat belts and when the child seat becomes secure as to not move an inch either way the switchable seat belt releases. *et

Vehicle was involved in an accident when there was a brake failure, dealer found the calipers to be defective and replaced the brake pads, rotors, and calipers, in the accident, the airbags experienced no deployment and the seatbelts did not work, passenger sustained injuries.

While driving on a long distance drive, my 6 years old daughter was in the rear left seat with her seat belt on. She pulled the seat belt all the way out to lay down and take a nap while restrained in the seat belt. While asleep she had taken her hand out of her seat belt and the seat belt was wraped around her waist. When she woke up, in order to free herself form the wraped seat belt, she unbuckled her seat belt while the seat belt was still wrapped around her, this is when the problem happend. The seatbelt's retraction system only retracted the seat belt in, making it tigher and tighter around her stomach. The retraction system did not let her loosen the seat belt. In further effort to free herself, she lifted herself and the seatbet became tigher around her stomach. I pulled along the highway to free her from the seatbelt, but the retraction system did not allow me to get the seat belt loose. I did not have any pocket knife with me to cut the seat belt. I finally flaged a motarist who had a pocket knife and cut the seat belt and freed her. The seat belt had become so tight that she had gotton injured all around her waist and stomach. If this had happend with a smaller child it could have easily kiled the child if not helped in time.

Consumer's wife was driving when she ran into the back of pickup truck and the airbags did not deploy, but the seat beltsdisconnected, causing the consumer's child to be thrown forward and hit her head. Also wife's left upper arm was injured on steering wheel.

Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision at 45mph, and the airbags did not deploy.also, seat belt did not retract, resulting in minor injuries. Dealer and manufacturer have been notified.

I was stopped waiting for a vehicle in front of me to make a left turn.i was hit in the rear by a 1996 nissan maxima traveling in excess of 40 mph.the impact pushed my camry into the rear of a 1989 ford in front of me.my camry made contact with the ford on my driver's side front directly near the airbag sensor in my front left bumper area.upon impact by the nissan in my rear, my driver's seat collapsed backward, causing me to slide forward underneath the dashboard and steering wheel.the seatbelt failed to properly tense up, causing me to injure my right knee and my abdomen.i was the only driver injured in this 3-car accident, but the extent of my injuries has not yet been determined.both the airbags in the 1996 nissan deployed properly, as well as the airbag in the 1989 ford, even though it was only hit from the rear by my camry.toyota usa has been notified of the incident, and has assured me they will inspect my vehicle this week.obviously, i believe strongly that the airbags should have deployed, and the seat should not have collapsed backward.

While driving at 25 mph took foot off of the brake pedal and vehicle accelerat consumer applied the brakes again, and vehicle kept accelerating. Engine check light came on and won't go off.also, driver's side shoulder beltwasn't working.

Rear passenger seat belt on the left side failed to retract. I can not answer a question about oem, because i have no idea what that is. Could you be more clear on your official forms, please.

Driver's side rear seatbelt failed to retract in october, 2002.replaced by toyota of durham.on another occasion, the passenger's side rear seatbelt failed to retract.

2 years ago, more or less, i adjustedthe driver's seat and the steering wheel of my 1999 toyota camry le.since that time, on occasion, i am unknowingly turning on the cruise control which is a button on the end of an arm off the steering column. I cannot reset the seat and steering wheel position to fit me but i am very worried that having the cruise control operating my car when i don't know it may be a very dangerous situation for me and my car.

Driver seat broke into a reclining position during rear impact collision - after being pushed into two other vehicles, for front end impact, neither no airbag deployed - i am concerned that had the vehicle impacted me harder and come into the back seat a little more, the reclining driver seat would have resulted in severe head injuries if not worse.

The front headrest is too big, disabling the driver's rear vision, which could cause a vehicle crash.dealer has not seen vehicle.

On 11/26/2002. I was rear-end while stoping to make a left turn. The car hit me from the rear, which caued the drivers seat to break on impact. I was at a stand still! the drivers seat should not broke and fell back which caused lower back injury.

Hit from rear at about 45 miles at a stop light.both bucket front seats laid back on rear seat at impact. Iis this is a defect in seat construction as i am thinking of buying same auto.we did not have injuries.*la

While at a stop, another vehicle rear ended the camry going about 30 mph, and driver's seatback broke and flew backwards which may have caused injuries. Please provide further information and vin#.

Front seat padding on the back rest is matted down, resulting in backside gets into bottom closure of seat, which irritates while driving

My daughter was traveling north at 40 mph, and she turned around briefly to check if her little brother was buckled in his seat belt. When she turn back around the car was on the curve and she slammed on the brakes as hard as she could to stop the car, but the car wouldn't stop and preceded to accelerate. She went through partially two brick walls, knocked down a stop and street sign, and the car flipped a couple of times. The car ended up landing on the passenger side, leaving the car left side up. My daughter suffered injuries to the neck, back, and her knees were cut from the glass of the window in a result of the car crashing. Luckily, my son suffered no injuries. I am very concerned, why did the brakes fail in my daughter's attempt to stop the vehicle.

Brake failure.*dt

When the brake pedal is applied in an emergency situation, it goes to the floor and causes a rumble, before it comes to a complete stop. Dealer has been contacted.

01/2001 - 03/2001 4 wheel abs.intermittent occurrence of the following: abs functioning or brakes operating when brake pedal is not depressed. Notice while driving on highway, car starts to vibrate excessively from unneeded braking. The problem goes away as driving continues. After 1 incident took car to a repair station because i needed to apply the gas pedal to go down hill to keep car going at speed limit (where usually car will roll at speed limit). Car put on racks and found brakes were extremely hot. All wheels could not be hand turned. After brakes cooled problem was able to drive car normally. Had 4 occurrences of this in last 3 months. Took car to dealer and problem did not occur. Dealer said there was no sense is taking things apart when there were no symptoms. 03/2001 took car back to dealer 3 weeks later.latest experience was that brakes were now failing. Pedal went low when applying brakes.dealer said brake fluid was contamintated and warranty is now void. Dealer mentioned that 1 week earlier another car came in with contaminated brake fluid. Dealer says that due to contamination, they need to replace almost entire braking system (calipers, lines, master, abs sensors) this was estimated at over $3,000. Told dealer to try and only flush brake fluid. He said could do this but they would also need to replace the master since brake pedal was going low. Dealer also said that they (toyota) would not be responsible for any brake failure that occurred following this compromised repair alternative.dealer called later and said front rotors also need to be replaced because they are beyond tolerance for resurfacing. Agreed to the change.(total cost of repairs: $1,000) 09/2001 the car operated fine for almost six months. Notice that at around the 60 mph range, vibration starts to occur. Appears to be the early symptoms of the abs starting to function without depressing brakes (again). Imo problem is the abs starting to function by itself. Problem stopped *

While driving at a rate of approx. 35 mile per hourthe brakes went down to the floor which resulted in a back end collison .the passenger seat belt and the air bags did bot work.accident was repoted to police and insurance company.inspector stated that the seatbelt and airbag was ok.the car is at the dealership having amaster cylinderrepalced, frozen calipers replaced and brake pads replaced because of uneven wear.

Have to actually go back to dealer 4 times in one year for the same isc valve problem, everytime this valve go wrong my car will not start!! i dont understand why they need to be replaced so often! cost $370for the valve. Dt

Please pay attention to the two accidents that i have experienced.i purchased my toyota camry in 2003 and loved it. I have been driving for 57 years and never had an accident. On october 11, 2007, i drove up my daughter's driveway, came to a stop (my foot was on the brake) and was putting my car in park when it suddenly accelerated into and crashed thru the closed garage door!i finally came to a stop after crashing into the hot water heater and a work table, putting a big hole in the wall behind it. A cabinet fell on the driver's door and the broken garage door closed onto the rear of my car.luckily i was not injured beyond bruising and stiffness.more importantly, i am relieved my grandson was not in the car with me, or worse, had not come into the garage when i honked for him.this happened in seconds and was terrifying.my foot was on the brake the entire time! two years later, on june 16, 2009, i drove into a jewelry store in a strip mall. I pulled slowly into a parking space. Again, my foot was on the brake as i was stopping. I attempted to put the car into park. It suddenly accelerated into a large concrete pillar, jumping the curb.again, my foot was on the brake. This happened in a split second; my seat belt tightened and locked around my chest and throat. I jammed my thumb, hit my left knee on the steering column and was in immediate chest pain from the seat belt. My car was towed to my mechanic. I went to the emergency room and also saw my doctor. I suffered many deep contusions and it took six weeks for my chest and back to heal.i am still having neck and knee problems. This was a horribly frightening experience.what could have happened had that concrete pillar not stopped the car??!!what if people had been on the sidewalk or just a couple of more feet and the car would have crashed through the glass front of the jewelry store. Two crashes--$11,000 damagesi still feel very unsafe about my car. When will it happen again?

At speeds above 50 mph since its purchase in 1999.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

To whom it may concern:this is not a formal complaint.it is a matter of concern that might be shared by other1999 toyota owners.while the news is extensive in reporting the issues involved in uncontrolled acceleration of select later model toyota automobiles, i believe an aspect of an earlier camry has the potential of causing an accident. I have a 1999 toyota camry for which i have experienced several occasions when the accelerator (gas pedal) will not depress as intended.several attempts are necessary to have the car respond to my desire to increase speed.this situation is the opposite of that now being publicized; however, it is equally dangerous.for example, should i find myself in a situation where i need to accelerate to avoid an accident, i have doubts as to the response of the car, that is, will it increase in speed sufficiently in time to avoid a potential collision. It is my intent to have my service station inspect the car for any obvious deficiencies.yet, i feel this situation, in light of the uncontrolled acceleration problem now garnering the headlines, might be being neglected by toyota.if it is a design flaw, it is their responsibility to address and fix it.

The brakes do not seem to work properly when the car is on a decline; this is particularly a problem when the road is wet. Sometimes it seems as if the brakes do not want to work. My mechanic has twicethoroughly checked the brake system and replaced worn parts, but he is unable to locate any problem with the braking system.

When the brakes were applied the pedal went to the floor and caused the vehicle to experience extended stopping distance.*nlm

The cruise control was set just over 70 mph and the vehicle accelerated on it's own.the vehicle reached 90 mph.when the brakes were applied, the cruise control did not disengage.the ignition was turned off and the engine finally quit.20 minutes later the vehicle was started and redlined.the cruise control module was replaced.(denso cruise control actuator, toyota 88002-06020, serial#mx100300-6040 12v, made in mexico) the consumer had the brakes replaced months before the incident, however the heat produced caused the rotors to warped. *sc

Driving at about 10 mph, brakes seemed to giveaway. While pressing the brakes vehicle continued to travel, brake pedal went straight to the floor, giving no response.

When the brakes were applied, the brake pedal went go to the floor, which caused the vehicle to experience extended stopping distance.

While driving another vehicle veered into consumer's vehicle lane, consumerapplied the brakes andpedal went to the floor, causing vehicle to collide into the guard rail and crash.upon impact, both frontal air bags didnot deploy.driver sustained injuries. Vehicle was towed to the dealer.

Abs braking system engage immediately upon braking with no impending skid resulting in increased stopping distance and dog being struck. Pavement was dry and i could have avoided the accident if the car did not have overly sensitive abs brakes. I compained to the selling dealer about this when the car was new and was told this is normal and not a problem. The abs has activated on several other occasions when it shouldn't have cause loss of control but no accident. Abs should be reprogrammed to only activate when there is an impending wheel lockup.

While driving 45-50 mph and without warning applied brakes and anti-lock brake systemdid not function, resulting in a collision.driver sustained minor injuries, and vehicle was totaled.during the accident three passengers were injured also.

On incline or hill ,when taking foot off brake vehicle willbegin to roll backwards about 20 feet, causing safety hazard.

Brake system failed on two occasions due to failure of the (1st failure) abs valve and (2nd failure) master cylinder leakage. The systems are designed to engage if one unit fails, then other will engage, which did not happen. Mjs

A fading brake problem on 3 occasions. Brake pedal will go to floor , for a few seconds there were no brakes, but eventuallythey will catch.

When applying brakes they grind and make noise.dealer replaced pads. But, grinding sound persisted.dealer adjusted brakes, still noisy.currently, dealer said thatall toyotas do that, and they could replace brakes with after market brakes to remedy problem.

Brakes would wear out excessively. Vehicle would skip alongroad when brakeswere applied. Prior to problem, had work done on brakes at 7,000 miles. Mechanic indicated 5% of brakeswere left. Had to replace brakes the first time.currently, replacing brakes again.

When applying the brakes the pedal goes to the floor, and has to be repumped in order to stop the vehicle. Also, dealer replaced the master cylinder.

When the brake pedal is appliedit goes to the floor, causingextended stopping distance, before it comes to a complete stop. Dealer has been contacted.

The brakes seem to loose its power assist at low speeds, they feel much the way if the engine was shutt off and greatly increase the stopping distance of the vehicle, often the loss of braking will put the vehicle into an intersection or other dangerous situations when trying to accelerate from a stop or when stopping suddenly, also when stopping normally then try to press harder on the brake pedal, there is an extended stopping problem, consumer does not believe the problem is with the abs, however dealer unable to duplicate the problem and states its just like fact that the vehicle has abs.

While driving traction control at 65000 miles failed. The light illuminated on thedashboard. Tookvehicle to the mechanic, andhe reset it. Then,it happened again, light came on while consumer was driving. Consumer bought the part; had it put on. Within a month the air bag light illuminated on the dash. Took the vehicle back to the mechanic they found that the air bag sensor module was defective.air bag on the passenger side was completely inoperable.

Whenbrakes were applied in a panic stop, pedal went to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance which caused a collision/ minor injuries.upon inspection ofvehicle by the dealer, it was discovered thatcalipers were defective.dealer has replacedrotors/pads and calipers.

On 2 separate days, the brakes have semi-failed, ie., when depressed, they did not stop the car in the normal distance, but did eventually bring the car to a stop about 2-3 carlengths beyond expected stopping point. No other factors contributed, ie., pavement was dry, circumstances ordinary. Very frightening, lucky to have avoided an accident, particularly the second occurence in heavy traffic! between incidents, all worked normally. Have had car in to a dealer (after second incident), brakes worked on, certified as safe. Concerned because found similar complaints on nhtsa website that were not resolved by dealer repair!

While driving in wet conditions down a hill and when trying to slow down at about 10 mph, brakes seemed to give way. Consumer had to press foot all the way to the floor before vehicle would stop.car stopped midway before intersection.

Abs too sensitive for road conditions.slightest variation in road condition causes abs system to go into panic mode braking.on many occasions the car would not stop because of road was wet under one tire and not the other.current winter conditons cause abs system to brake erraticly even though there is no reason for the brakes to be pulsating like they do or for the brakes to vibrate so loud to cause the driver to panic .i dread driving this carfor i don't know how the braking system will react.

In 30000 miles we have replaced front rotors twice, pads 3 times, and tires twice-toyota has told us this wear is normal

On 5/29/99, i applied the anti-lock brakes to avoid a collision with a vehicle that cut me off on a highway.immediately, the car swerved across the highway violently and spun in 360 turns twice before being hit by two cars and crashing into a jersey barrier.not only did the anti-lock brakes fail, but the steering locked up and none of the airbags (front or side) deployed.the car was totaled.my fiancee and i sustained minor injuries.a driver of another car hit us and crashed into the jersey barrier, sustaining significant injuries.

When making a stop brake pedal would go to floorboard to make a full stop. Please provide further information.

While pressing the brakes vehicle continued totravel also, brake would pulsate. Dealer has been contacted, can't reproduce the problem. Please provide further informaton.

When the vehicle is at a complete stop the brake pedal will go to the floor.the dealer has inspected the vehicle.

Applied brakes and pedal went to floor, reapplied brakes again and pedal went to floor and struck anothervehicle.this has occurred 4 times previously, after each incident, i reviewed abs stopping procedure to be sure it wasn't me.my sister was present during 1 episode.

While driving at 25 mphvehicle accelerated, brakes were applied and pedal went to floorboard. Vehicle went into an intersection and frontal impact into a house. Consumer was informed that the rear brake shoes needed to be cleaned and adjusted, both rear and front brakes were worn and needed to be replaced, consumer was then infomred by an independent mechanic that the front and rear brakes were still good.

This vehicle has had at least 2 brake repairs per year since the initial repair done prior to 20000 miles .rotors have been replaced twice, and this is the most brake repairs i have ever had on any vehicle i have owned. The last mechanic who worked on the car recommended replacing the calipers because they seem to be a problem in these cars. I have complained to toyota and they say they have not heard of any problems in this year vehicle. I find this hard to believe when mechanics are telling me otherwise. I have always been a toyota enthusiast, but i am concerned about the apathetic response i have gotten from them.

Brake pads are wearing out prematurely.when brake pedal is applied the brakes make a loudvibrating noise with poor stooping effect.most of my driving is highway yet the brake wear out as if i apply them constantly.

I was driving on expressway doing about 35 mph when the steering wheel locked as i driving around a curve. I drove into the left cement barrier, car spun around and hit the barrier again. I just purchased the car and didn't even have it for 5 days! the car was towed and salvaged.

Car pulls to left after new tires , 3 different alignment checks. Went on-line and discovered numerous complaints and few solutions. This is dangerous and little help from dealers. You have to maintain constant pressure on wheel when driving at any speed to stay in lane.

This is the second power steering pump that has failed on my toyota camry which was purchased new.the first pump failed at 7,800 miles and now the front seal is leaking on the replacement pump at 76,243 miles. This is unacceptble.

Power steering pump failed causing leakage which resulted in smoke.

Consumer states the cruise control fail at 70mph causing and accident and the air bag did not deploy. Dealer notified ts

The consumer stated that the outer tie rod separated from the steering shaft which resulted in loss of steering. The threads are corroded on the steering shaft and the tie rod on the driver side.the tie rod threads were not apparent to vision when inspected.this was a known problem. *sc

While parking vehicleright tire came off the rim.mechanic statedtie rod needed replacement.

I was driving on expressway doing about 35 mph when the steering wheel locked as i driving around a curve. I drove into the left cement barrier, car spun around and hit the barrier again. I just purchased the car and didn't even have it for 5 days! the car was towed and salvaged.

I was traveling at a speed of 45 mph, when another car ran a stop sign.i t-boned the other car and my air bag did not go off.my breast bone was broken due to my body's impact with the steering wheel.i am only reporting this incident now because of an article i read about air bags not deploying during accidents.

Sunvisor was flipped down to be used. It failed to stay in place. When making right or left turns, would hit driver's head.vehicle was out of alignment. Been to dealer & informed by mechanic it was characteristic of vehicle. The problem would disappear after 500 miles. The wheels were not balanced. At the dealer 4 times for wheels. Both rear wheels could not be balanced.

Water leaked into the vehicle although the doors and windows were closed.*nlm

I only had my 1999 camry for 5 days. I was driving on the expressway doing about 35 mph. I was going around a slight curve when the wheel locked and i couldn't turn. I tried to stop but couldn't and ran directly into the concrete median causing me to spin around and then hit the median again. Both air bags came out and my car was towed to a lot where it was declared "totaled." no one or any other property was damaged. I had my car for only 5 days and it malfunctioned.

As consumer was getting into vehicle something betweendriver's seat andfloor caused a severe cut on her lower leg. Uncovered sharp metal on seat adjustment tract injured the driver.

Roof leaked. Mjs

The toyota dealer service center where they installed the car alarm, they had to cut the firewall seals which caused the exhaust fumes and any other fumes to enter into the vehicle, which maymake occupant to feel sick.please provide further information.

An electrical engineer tested the original bumper of the 1999 camryand was able to ignite the bumper by a pocket lighter within 45 seconds.please provide further information.

My camry has 30,000 miles on it and it is falling apart!the screws have fallen out of the doors three time and the toyota dealerships only solution is to put silicone in the screw holes which now causes the the doors to squeak.the car is dragging the ground as a result of poor struts.i continue to get the run around with the manufacture.*nlm

Consumer was locked inside ofvehicle and without prior warning electrical door lock will not open. Dealership is aware of problem. Consumer was informed that the only problem the dealer could find, was that the battery needed to be replaced.

The driver side door handle broke off in consumer's hand.

Regulator/motor on both rear power windows are broken, (windows will roll-up) plus, both handles on front windows are broken.to open door, one must roll window down and open door from the outside.

Bottom ofdriver's door is very sharp which causeddriver to receive five stitches.

Toyota 1999 camry ce/le/xle sedan 4ddrove over a 4" street deep 25mph all 4 motor mount broken about 4 years ago.had a warranty but toyota refused to fix it by saying that it was an accident.and insurance company geico refused to fix & said that it was not an accident. At last we had to buy another used engine to run the car.

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry. The contact stated while traveling at speeds of 45 mph there was an unusually loud noise coming from the vehicle. The dealer advised the suspension stabilizer bar had failed. The dealer made repairs to the stabilizer bar, struts and suspension system. The failure recurred within two years and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The dealer advised the motor mounts would need to be replaced, as well as other unknown components within the suspension system. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000 and the current mileage was 160,000. The vin was not available.

When driving at slow speed there is a groaning noise coming from the suspensiondue tostrut rod failure.owner told there was a suspension problem and that toyota is looking for a fix. *ml

Vibration in steering wheel and body at speeds between 40 and above/ growning noise when brakes are applied at moderate speeds.

Consumer states on several occasions when there is two or more passengers and some luggage, the vehicle suspension sags to a point where the tail pipe and possibly the fuel tank, occasionally comes in contact with the road while the vehicle is in motion, consumer states that the vehicle bottoming occurs when the vehicle bears a load far below any maximum specified weight, consumer has been trying to get the coil springs replaced by manufacturer but has had no luck, he has been told by delaership that there is no problem with the suspension after the vehicle was completely unloaded, even though the service technician admitted that the vehicle appeared low, he then stated that consumer overloaded vehicle.

Vibration and grinding sound thorugh steerting column particularly when tight turning right; sporadic sound of a sprung "rubber band" through steering column; on 4 or 5 occasions steering wheel momentarily bound up (did not unwind) took minimal pressure to return wheels to straight.

Consumer noticed a rattle while driving. Notified dealer, and informed consumer that strut rod neededto be replaced.feel free to provide any further information.

Struts have a diminished capacity, causingvehicle to bounce. Noise dies down when the brakes are applied and bottoms out .dealer has inspectedvehicle on three separate occasions, and has not been able to correct or duplicate the problem.

Within 32,000 milesvehicle has gone through 2 sets of tires due to poor alignment.vehicle cannot stay in alignment or straight.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving over a bump the vehicle makes a clanking noise.the vehicle has been to an independent repair shop where the strut was replaced, but this did not repair the problem.the contact indicated that shortly after the warranty expired a persistent clanking sound was noted in the front suspension. An independent garage diagnosed it as a failed strut which was replaced, but the noise continued.this was a common complaintfor the car and subsequent model years.the contact claimed the toyota dealers were aware of the defect which was the result of a defective strut mount design. However, repairs were at contact's expense, not the dealers. The total repair cost was $400.a call to toyota failed to obtain any information regarding safety implications.

A rattling noise is coming from the front suspension of the car.attempts have been made to repair it including replacing all struts.noise has been noticeable since the car had approximately 32,000 miles.much money wasted on ineffective repairs.rattle continues to get worse.

1999 toyota camrysoon after we purchased our 1999 toyota camry my wife and i noticed that every time we went over the speed bumps in our apartment complex at very low speeds we would hear a noise - a click/clack at the left front tire - not loud but distinct. I called the local toyota dealer - stevens creek toyota and described the issue to the service manager & requesting an appointment. He assured me that this is simply the brakes that are "being seated" and not an issue. The noise continued and became louder with time. As this point we were beyond the warranty period. I took the car into melody toyota and asked the mechanic to diagnose the issue as the noise was much louder and occurred whenever we go over any pothole etc, not only bumps.. The mechanic reported that this was a broken strut arm or stabilizer arm. I asked if there was a warranty asi had complained to stevens creek toyota when the car only had a few thousand miles. The mechanic stated there is no warranty or recall on this item. I asked if the issue was common and the mileage and he responded i have seen this issue on a number of camry's - the mileage is irrespective - low miles or high.i have not had the issue resolved as he stated it would not hurt the car. Per the mechanic there must be tons of cars that have had this issue repaired. I believe that toyota is fully aware of this issue for quite some time as well.

Problems with uneven tire wear, brakes, car vibration, and bumpy suspension since new. Several attempts to get it corrected, including new pads, and tires 2 times each, but no luck

Vehicle has an alignment problem, it's taken in approximately every 10,000 miles to be adjusted.front alignment onpassenger's side always goes badfirst, then on driver's side. Dealer thinks it'sconsumers driving, and does not see it as a problem.

Front strut failure on xle v6 camry.noise began around 32,000 miles.strut plates replaced at owner expense at 42,000 miles and all four struts then replaced again at owner expense at 59,000 miles.manufacturer contacted and refused assistance "in this case."indication from other reports on net and manufacturers' knowledge of problem that this was, indeed, a common problem with that model year and style of camry.

I have returned my car to the toyota dealers on four occasions, three times for a vibration in the steering wheel and body, toyota has told me this is normal for this vehicle and proceded to put used tires from a demo with 5000 miles on to my vehicle, i then lost the power steering completely due to pump failure.i told toyota i would file for arbitration and they told me when they receive the forms they will then try four new tires and rims as a last time repair. I am not happy with toyota and believe if this vibration is normal then toyota needs to do a recall and make necessary repairs.

Vibration at speeds of 40mph and higher. Vibration most apparent at 60mph and higher. When steering wheel vibrates, car feels unsafe/unstable. Vibration is very apparent throughout the car.hands shake and can feel in arms and legs.vibration causes my lower back to hurt everytime i drive it.never had back problems before.dealer states that they reblanced the wheels.claims the vibration is the road. It appears that a good portion of camry and solara (both cars share same platform) owners are experiencing a clunking noise that occurs in the front.what does it take for nhtsa to extend the power of consumers to get toyota to admit to its fault, and take full responsibility?tsb#: su00299tsb#: 012199tsb#: su00100given that the massive amount of 1997-2001 camry's sold, i am confident that there are many frustrated owners who wish to have this problem resolved at the expense of toyota motor sales.some owners have experienced the problem early, within the 3yr/36k mi. Warranty period, while others are left in the cold to pay about $300 to pay for the repairs.considering that this is a manufacturers defect and not primarily wear and tear, i believe toyota motors corporation has the obligation to extend its warranty to address this issue.under what circumstances can the nhtsa do to protect consumers against design flaws and defects such as this one? *nlm

My 1999 camry (52k mile) sedan was in for service and i asked that clunking and sqweek in the front end be checked.after driving it, they informed me that the rubber top mounts on the macpherson struts were split and needed to be replaced. They said it was a common problem and they had replaced a lot of them. It cost approximately $350.i have owned 9 front wheel drive vehicles in the past 18 years and this has never occurred before. I think toyota is trying to get by without fixing that should probably be classified as a defect.this product should be recalled and fixed.

Rear strut is causing vehicle to act up. When the vehicle is 3/4full, vehicle will make a thumping sound.especially when backing up &accelerating.dealer knows of problem.

Dt: the contact stated the strut plateswere making noise. Vehicle was taken to a mechanic, and he stated the strut plates should be replaced.

My 1999 camry has squealing sound in the front end and its strut mounts are bad for a while before it reached 50000 miles.i never imagined such a problem with camry.it was not like people said that camry had very good records.my car has many problems associated with it such as engine light has been on and off and never solved.i paid $99 once for the checking and dealers paid many times.the anti-lock brake does not feel right and the brake can not stop car fast enough that contributed a accident in 2001.the door side trim has been off the line and looks ugly, etc.i feel a lot of headache with it.

Strut started to make a clicking sound.dealer found strut leaking, and replaced it.clicking continued so dealer made modifications to strut tower.

A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop. The contact was waiting for a response from the manufacturer regarding the failure. The approximate failure and current mileages were 160,000.

Was inching into a parking space, tapping the brakes, going at an incline (uphill) to park.suddenly with about 8-10 inches to go the car literally lunged forward on its own.slamming with a huge boom into a concrete poll.the brakes were pumping as all of this happened until finally the acceleration ceased.had the poll not been there i would have went through the front window of the restaurant or flatten any person walking by.the manager of the restaurant witnessed the entire event.he said there was absolutely no doubt in his mind from the creeping into the space, with only about 8-10 inches to go,to a sonic like boom and the huge lunge forward of the vehicle, the throttle had to be wide open, then stuck there. It was a powerful enough crash that it broke the frame around the headlight on the driver's side.

This doesn't happen very often, and when it does it's just briefly.

About one year ago, i began to notice the accelerator pedal was intermittently sticky when i depress it. Sometimes i have to practically punch it with my foot before it finally gives way, causing the car to lurch forward. It continues to happen to this day. Some days it doesn't happen at all, and some days it happens every time i come to a full stop and then try to step on the gas again. I have never done anything to correct or repair it, because until this current recall, i viewed it more as a nuisance problem. Thus far it has never gotten stuck in the depressed position. According to the current terms of the recall, my car is not included. However, the information released today about this current recall leads me to believe that my sticky accelerator may be related to the recall and certainly warrants investigation.

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry. While driving toward a red light approximately 10 mph, she put her foot on the brake pedal and the vehicle lunged forward and accelerated. The driver pressed her foot on the brake pedal with much force in order to stop the vehicle. The passenger thought the driver had engaged the accelerated pedal since the vehicle began to accelerate; however, she was engaging the brake pedal. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated that there was nothing they could do since the vehicle was functioning properly. The failure mileage was 106,000. The current mileage was 109,890.

The contact previously owned a 1999 toyota camry. The contact stated that when backing into his driveway at approximately 2-3 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated across the street at an uncontrollable rate. The vehicle caused extensive damage to his neighbor's property. There were no injuries but a police report was taken. The vehicle was destroyed. The contact stated that he noticed no prior problems with sudden acceleration beforehand. He called the manufacturer and received no assistance. The vehicle was inspected by a toyota representative and the contact was informed that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The vehicle identification number was not available at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 25,000. Updated 05/13/2010. *lj

I own a 1999 toyota camry xl.my car is not on any of the recall lists, however, i do occasionally experience a sticky accelerator pedal. Since all the media coverage i've checked the floor mats, which don't seem to be related to the issue.i believe all toyota products need to have a recall to be sure all years are covered.

The contact owned a 1999 toyota camry. While driving at approximately 50 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated out of the control and crashed into guide wires. The driver was killed and a police report was filed. The vehicle was totaled. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

1999 toyota camry le with j in the vin. Accelerator has begun to stick. Hard to press down on gas.

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry.the contact experienced a hesitation in the accelerator pedal that caused it to stick while driving.when she deactivates the cruise control, the failure worsens.recall # 01v012000 (vehicle speed control) applies to this defect, however, she has not received a notice.the manufacturer stated that they do not have any recall information and are unable to be of assistance.the current and failure mileages were 116,000.

I own a 1999 camry and i have had the problem with sudden acceleration for years now. Whenever i get in the cari check the floor mat to make sure it is not wedged up against the gas pedal, before i even start the car or put on my seat belt. I was concerned when i saw that only model years 2000 and later were recalled. There are a lot of camries from 1999 and before on the roads as it was the no. 1 sedan in the us starting around 1996.

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry.while driving (mph unknown) the accelerator pedal would stick.the dealer repaired the speed control actuator; however, the failure continued to occur.there is a recall for the vehicle speed control (nhtsa campaign id #01v012000).the dealer stated that her vin was not included.the current mileage was 30,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.

My camry le 4 cylinder is experiencing sticky gas pedal from time to time. It is not sticking to the carpet. It has happened about 10 times so far.the problem happens when moving from complete stop position at light or stop sign.

Today, just 2 hours ago, when i tired parallel parking my 1999 toyota camry into a meter parking lot along the street, as usual i gave it a little gas to back it in, but unexpectly, it suddenly accerated backward very very fast, hit the parking meter and broke the meter pole, it also caused a dent in the bumper and trunk cover area. No one was injured in the accident and nothing has been done so far to correct the failure.

While pulling into a parking lot the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning. As a result the vehicle collided into a park vehicle. Updated 10/12/11the consumer stated his wife experienced sudden acceleration during daylight hours. On august 31, 2011 his wife drove forward and moved to the right to get near a curb, before backing into a parking space, she then shifted from drive to reverse and backed into the parking space, but then realized she wasn't close enough to the curb. She shifted from reverse to drive, drove forward about 15 feet and shifted from drive to reverse. Each of these shifts required her foot on the brake pedal. When she removed her foot from the brake pedal, the vehicle shot backwards, crashing into a parked vehicle. After the second accident, the vehicle deemed total and sold for salvage.updated 10/26/11

I drive a 1999 toyota camry. My car'sgas pedal also has similar problem as stated in the recent recalls. The problem occurs more often when waiting at a stop signal/sign and while trying to accelerate from zero. The gas pedal gets stuck and requires me depress the pedal harder resulting in sudden acceleration and after causing some frustration for drivers behind me. I even called up toyota and they are stating since my car is not part of the recall they would not fix it under the recall. However, i think my gas pedal problem is the initial phase of the overall problem and is very similar to problems stated by many consumers with this issue. Also, i am afraid that drivers behind me would begin accelerating the moment they see the green signal and may not realize that my car in front of them is still at a standstill. This problem could result in an very serious accident. My car can be hit by the car behind me and fatally affecting my spouse and child sitting in the rear seat. Can you please make toyota take immediate action and fix the problem in my car?

Consumer was at a stop sign, vehicleaccelerated forward when taking foot off brake, when placing foot back on brake, the vehicle accelerated backward. Damages were done to a vehicle in back and to the consumers vehicle as well. Dealer found nothing to be wrong with cable. Recall 01v01200o. The dealer replaced cruise control accelerator cable.

On numerous occasions, my 1999 toyota camry (4 cylinder) has experienced sudden unintended engine acceleration.i detected that this seems to occur when i am coasting towards a light before a hill, that the engine will speed up on its own and begin accelerating the car. Applying pressure on the brake stopped the car in most cases, but once i ended up accelerating and could not stop the car until i hit some bushes on the side of the road. It also happens when i was making a turn on several occasions that the acceleration increased on its own.i am reporting this now as with the news about toyota camry's, i believe the 1999 models have the same problem.the last date that this occurred to me was feb 28, 2010, but it has been happening a few times per year for five years.

When put in park, and before consumer shuts off engine, vehicle surges forward, happend 3 times, once it went through a garage door. Dealer cannot find cause.

The vehicle had a problem for over a year with thethrottle cable sticking.the throttle sticking was intermittent.the consumer felt the 4 cylinder engines should be recalled as the 99 toyota camry v6 engines.(recall # 01v012000) *scc

While pulling into a parking spacevehicle suddenly accelerated, jumping the curb and crashing into a building.

Vehicle accelerates on its own when accelerator pedal is not depressed and foot brake is not engaged. It happens without any warning and has already occurred 5 times. I have to step on the brake really hard to avoid hitting anything.it occurred also one time when in reverse immediately after starting which was extremely dangerous.

The contact sustained a concussion and was taken to the hospital. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The dealer nor manufacturer were not notified of the failure.

Complaint via e-mail.had learned that nhtsainvestigated sudden acceleration in the 2002 and 2003 toyota camry. I experienced this effect recently with my 1999 camry. The incident took place inside the garage of my apartment building. Although no injuries occurred, my car and another car suffered some body damage. I took the car to a toyota service center , but the technicians were unable to find anything that would explain the sudden acceleration.the consumer was backing into his parking space when the vehicle suddenly lurched forward.the brakes did not slow the vehicle.the consumer hit a post, bounced of it and hit a parked vehicle.the air bag did not deploy. *sc

While driving at 25 mph took foot off of the brake pedal and vehicle accelerat consumer applied the brakes again, and vehicle kept accelerating. Engine check light came on and won't go off.also, driver's side shoulder beltwasn't working.

Accelerator is getting stuck repeatedly in my 1999 toyota camry. When the accelerator is stuck i have to either force harder on the pedal or i have to release my foot and then hit the accelerator again with a greater force to remove the pedal from the stuck position causing the vehicle to accelerate highly when the pedal gets released and with my greater force on pedal. I have been running the vehicle like this for sometime but this issue is frequently happening so i wanted to bring this issue to your notice as a safety problem with the 1999 toyota camry car. Because of this issue i don't drive my kids in this car and i am concerned about the safety of myself and the passengers in it.

The vehicle experienced sudden acceeration as the consumer shifted the vehicle from reverse to drive, the consumer pulled the emergency brake but the vehicle continued to accelerate and the engine began to smoke as she applied the brake and turned off the engine, the vehicle hit a fire hydrant and came to a stop, the consumer contacted the dealer about recall 01v-012 but was told that her vehicle was not included, consumer believes a wider recall may be necessary.nlm

The gas pedal sticks when you first start and then drive the vehicle. The manufacturer knows this and suggest cleaning the throttle body every 15000 miles. They charge $25 to do this if that is all you have done. When the problem occurs you have to press down on the gas pedal hard to get it to release. This is obviously very dangerous. I have told my toyota dealer many times about this problem. The problem seams to alleviate itself after you have driven a few miles. The incident date below is just one date this occurred. It is a constant problem. I also own a 1993 toyota camry and it has the same problem.

Sudden acceleration resulting in an accident.

While driving on the highway, the car suddenly sped up without me putting pressure on the gas pedalthe car felt like it was about to take off but subsided after a few seconds.

The vehicle after cruise control was set reponded with a continuing ofsudden acceleration. None of the operational control selections/accelerate/ set/coast/off/resume and accelerate. When activated would not alter the cars internal control. The engine was turned off, then turned back on and still nothing happeneed. The automatic gear shift was moved to neutral and the engine went immediately to high rpm's (above 5,000 rpm). There were two incidents of sudden acceleration that on 2/03/99 one was on the freeway. The second was in heavy traffic flow just after peak hour. Weather and driving conditions were very goodto excellent..

A car in the northbound lane cut across traffic into our southbound lane atthat time i had no where to move so i applied my brakes her car proceeded to accelerate to apprx 40-45 mph and hit us head on. We had injuries bruises, neck injuries and the worst a broken sternum. At know time did our airbags deploy during this accident. I have contacted toyota corporation and they said we were not hit hard enough for the airbags to deploy end of dicussion. Toyota has given us the cold shoulder and more or less not to bother them about this. I would like to know how come if we were hit so hard the airbags did not deploy. The police at the scene along with others were also concerned about the airbags not deploying and also they informed not to get into the car because the airbags could deploy at any time. The autobody shop is also concerned with the airbags but toyota will not return their calls. If you could help in any way it would be greatly appreciated.thank you for your time, cyndy pitassi.

I purchased a new toyota camry in november 1999.in 2004 (the car has fewer than 45,000 miles on it), while traveling on a local highway, the accelerator became "stuck". Luckily, we were traveling at a low rate of speed, because we had just accelerated after leaving a red light.the driver (a friend) kept her wits and put the car in neutral, then steered into an empty lot where she shut off the engine. At this point the car's rpms were "redlining". When i called toyota to report the incident i was told that i was at fault - that i should have had the accelerator serviced.i asked if there were instructions in the owners manual that warned owners to have the accelerator serviced.did the owners manual disclose that the accelerator would stick? the answer was no.i then contacted toyota by email and fully described what had happened.they assigned me a case number and sent me a coupon for $500 off my next toyota.needless to say i got rid of the car.until 2005 i kept all the information, but my home was flooded in katrina and i no longer have the documents.when i heard about the recalls i felt that someone should know that this accelerator problem has existed for a very long time and toyota was very aware of it. The toyota dealership did repair work for the problem.

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry. While attempting to park the vehicle, the engine started to rev. The vehicle then accelerated backwards and crashed into a tree.she had to be hospitalized for internal injuries. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they did not provide her with any assistance. The technicianmade cosmetic repairs to the vehicle.after the repair when entering the vehicle, it accelerated without intention. She was able to decelerate by driving onto a curb. The manufacturer was notified, but she did not receive any assistance. The failure mileage was 24,000. The current mileage was unknown.

Unexplained acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear at 2800 rpm. The car will not stop in a safe distance.

The contact owns a 1999 toyota camry. While driving onto the highway, with her foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle accelerated up to 80 mph. She was forced to apply extreme pressure to stop the vehicle and shift the gear in park. She was advised to check the floor mats; however, she observed that the floor mats were not related to the failure. She attempted to purchase new floor mats; however, the dealer stated that there were none available for her year, make and model vehicle. The failure also occurred the day prior; although, the acceleration was not as high, therefore, the contact thought it was idling to high. The current mileage was approximately 89,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 87,000. Updated 10/30/09updated 10/30/09.

Consumer saidwhen she bought vehicle it revved and rock backedback and forth whileidling.

Not severe - but this is an older toyota and i want the problem logged. My car does "lurch" in sudden accelerations, but it has never been severe. I have only noticed when i am stopped at a light, and in reverse. When i am stopped with my foot on the brake, the car engine suddenly revs. But i'm always clamped down hard on the brake, so there has never been a problem there. While in reverse, i have also had sudden acceleration, but minor and it only lasts for a second. But it does happen. Since it wasn't happening all the time, the dealership could never find a problem with it.

Accelerator pedal sticks when trying to accelerate from a dead stop or slow roll. Sometimes it takes a hard stomp to break free or to hold down brake pedal and accelerator pedal at same time when stopped at light or stop sign. Personally checked components associated with pedal but cannot find anything out of the ordinary. Seems to stick when engine is up to operating temperature.

Accelerator stuck , car shot forward, hitting townhouse on street. Airbags did not deploy.

Dt: the contact stated when trying to accelerate the pedal did not work correctly.whenpressing the pedal sometimes it will not move.at other times when accelerating the vehicle will surge forward.a local mechanic could not determine the problem.the vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer to determine the cause of the problem. I bought a used 199 camry two weeks ago.the first week i noticed a problem with the passenger window. Itwould not roll up or down after having rolled in down and up severeal times.i mentioned to my brother that i had a probelm with my camry and before i could even state the problem he asked if it was a 1999 camry and if i had a problem with the window rolling up and down.apparently his mother had the exact same problem -- but just turned it in at the end of her lease.the dealer says that it is probably the regulator.this seems to be a common problem although there is not recall on this.dealer says it will cost $400. I am concerned about this problem in the winter ( i live in wisconsin).there is also a considerable safety and security concern. I am not sure whether i will return the car or get it repaired.

The power windows in the front on the driver and passenger sides go off track and will not come down.my dealer said this happens all the time on the 1999 camrys but there has been no recall. This is dangerous in the north eastin bad weather.it also makes us vulnerable to a car jacking or theft.my dealer said he fixed but windows but it has happened again.why doesn't the government order a recall. What happens after my warrenty is over?there is a real design defect with these cars, so why isn't someone doing something about this? what about the hours on end that i must waste waiting for repairs and the lost hours of work. Who is suppose to reimburse me for lost pay?

Windshield was scratched when bought. Dealer try to polish out but couldn't so replaced windshield with oem glass.replaced glass has extreme distortion and waviness when look out towards rearview mirror and passenger side.took back to dealer and they ordered new windshield. Had same distortion.dealer ordered more windshields and had same distortions.contacted toyota customer service.now customer service and area rep telling me all toyota camrys have this distortion in glass and is considered a "common item" instead of a defect.have checked aftermarket glass and most seems to have some distortions to a varying degree.this distortion is not just at the edge of the windshield and is distracting when driving and could possibly affect safety.is this a common problem in new vehicles?my previous vehicles did not have this distortion.glass technician calls it "cross grain distortion".
