Today my wife was stopped in a parking lot driveway waiting for traffic to clear when 2 cars crashed into the front end of the our camry. It broke the front bumper open and the styrofoam support inside. The impact did not set off the airbag and it is within the front end range of impact.
My mother just had an accident this morning and from her describing that 98 toyota camry was out of control and break seemed not working at all.so i started looking for vehicle recalls and defects then i realized this accident my mother had could be caused by defects.if you just look, you could easily find many others complaints. She was driving at 55 mph and trying to change lane then next thing she know was car started to swerving so she tried to regain control then hit the break which did not function. I will have to look for legal advise within next couple of days and see what they say. By the way air bags were not activated.please let me know if there was any lawsuit or compensation for this kind of fatal accident. Thank you.
Just recently my air bag light has been on. I called toyota to see if the problem was a recall perhaps and found out that it was not and i was surprised only because that this is a true safety issue in event that i was ever in a accident. Air bags have not reached 10 yrs old yet and they are causing problems now? what concerns me is that when i heard that when the air bag light comes on your air bags are not working meaning that will not deploy in accident. Toyota needs to consider of a recall on this issue.

The car accident involved another vehicle which illegally turned in front of my wife's car as she proceed through an intersection. As a result, the front center of my wife's car hit the other woman's car at the right fornt corner, causing excessive damage to the center frontal section of her vehicle.the air bag did not deploy, and even the body shop owner is wondering why, as naturally am i. I do not want the dealer or manufacturer to be able to "cover up" what may be a very serious failure of the safety system of this car, and potentially cause more serious harm to unsuspecting toyota car owners. I want to know if it should have gone off.

This 1998 toyota camry lewas purchased used in 2003 from a local dealership.it now has 64, 970 miles on it, has never been in an accident, contains all original parts, and has a flawless electronics system.the problem lies with the air bags warning light which has burned constantly for the last few years, while driving.to have this system checked is costly, yet there has never been a recallon these air bags for this year and model.in addition, i have never received a recall notice of any kind regarding this vehicle.please advise

My wife started up her 1998 toyota camry, slowly made a right turn when suddenly the automobile accelerated at a high speed, jumped the curb, knocked over a parking meter and hit the side of an apartment house.she was not hurt and the air bag did not deploy, despite the impact.toyota, which had just serviced the car two weeks before, repaired the car (with my insurance).we insisted on a full investigation by toyota, who determined that the floor mat jammed the accelerator. We do not buy that story in light of recent events and what happened to us. And that is why we are writing now to show this problem has existed for a while.

When 98 camry was first bought in sept 2000, i had a problem with my air bag light going off ever since it was driven off lot.dealership fixed and i did not have a problem ever since.in june 2003 i had floor wiring harness replaced.the end of oct, beginning of sept i needed my alarm system switched out with new key system (the alarm system is something i needed to have done).since the alarm system was changed out, my air bag light has been going offsince and they tell me there is a sensor problem again but i would have to pay for them to fix. This is the same problem i had when i drove the car off the lot. Now that the warranty is up they do not want to fix.they want me to pay for a problem that i feel is theirs. Its only been 3 years that i have had this car and i fill that this is a safety issue. I have been tring to have a tether strap anchor installed in my camry for my child's restraint which requires such tether.initially, i contacted the local toyota dealership and the service person on the phone said he wouldn't install it, because the local hospital, shands, had yelled at him for improper installations on prior car restraints. When i asked the same service man if he could read the car manual to determine which parts would be necessary, he said it made no sense to him.i then called the national toyota dealership and was given the phone number of the department of transportation.i then searched the internet for a toyota parts department in richardson texas and orderedthe parts listed in the manual as necessary. I then called back the local toyota dealership and made an appointment to have the parts installed. After taking the parts to the local dealership, i was told that there were missing parts. The missing parts were not sent to me by the toyota richardson parts department. I searched again the toyota web site to find the missing part, which was the anchor for the tether. Only the bolts and the spacers were sent by toyota richardson.i called the national toyota customer service department to ask if they could identify the part that i needed since, the owner's manual does not clearly label the part other than calling it the tether anchor.i feel that the car dealership needs to have knowledge of how to properly install tether straps into their cars, but i can't even find some one at the dealership who knows which parts i need to order as listed in the owner's manual.

I have a check engine light that won't go away.supposedly it was related to the o2 sensors.they've both been replaced, to no avail.a dual-certified toyota master mechanic is scratching his head on this one.there's obviously nothing wrong with the engine as it's been performing well for the last couple of years, with an engine light burning brightly, regardless.it's very annoying as it's obviously a useless light, now, and all i can hope for is for the bulb to eventually burn out - as i don't care to get into tearing out the dash to remove it.very very annoying (now have a piece of black duct tape over the lens but that's hardly a fix).

When i recently went to the local toyota dealer to purchase 2 new keys, after nearly 2 hours i was advised that due to the age of the vehicle the new keys could not be programmed without the purchase and installation a new ignition module (on-board computer) costing $1,812 including labor and 2 keys. The check engine light came on in vehicle. Dealer says a wire from engine was missing, and there was also something plastic in engine burning.
Dashboard trouble lights -- bulb out, check engine, reverse indicator on gear selector( while in park or any other setting) came on.i brought the car to a licensed mechanic whom i've been dealing with for about fifteen years.he examined car and found that the rear wiring harness in the trunk along the left side trunk hinge had been stretching to the point where the wires were tearing, melting the insulation, poping fuses, and shorting out the individual circuits.i contacted the dealer after the repair and i was made aware of the problems and their factory representative claimed no prior knowledge of any such incident ever happening.
1.the automobile would shimmy, shake and stop operating suddenly when the brakes were applied.this lead to several near accident scenarios..when the automobile would shake violently and the engine would cut off it prevented the driver from proceeding on major highways and at intersections causing a dangerous situation.3.the car was taken to a toyota dealer for repair. Brake repairs were done but this was not the problem. This resulted in another very dangerous near accident during rush hour traffic at an intersection in which the auto would not start after shaking and coming to a violent halt.
While driving engine caught on fire under hood.no injuries.vehicle checked by dealer who could not determine cause.
On 2/9/2002 driving on the 55 close to the 91 freeway we noticed smoke coming from the vents of the passenger side of the car. We barely had time to park it on the side of the road the brakes were already burningso we had to coast to a complete stop.we ran away from the car for it was already ignited withflames when we got to another car that had stopped to help us the car blew up leaving the frame only orange county fire dept assisted us .and declared the car a total loss. We then contacted toyota who then said it was our fault and we had to pay for the car.thecar was and still is under warranty which expires on 4/16/2004 upon purchasing the vehicle toyotasold us lojack theft system 2 days later they came out to our house and installed it the only maintenance done on this car was lojack and my brother added 1/2 quart of oil no maintenance was needed at the time of the fire. I bought the car with 318076 miles on it and it had 40100 at the time of the fire. Toyota says that they are not at fault ,that i am for not having proper maintenace doneto the car and it is not a manufacturer defect or design therefore they say that i am liable for the whole bill which i feel and know that they are wrong it was under warranty and they needed to check out the facts before leaving me without a car and now a bad debt. I told them i still had the payments put up and was willing to deliver the paymentsif they compensated me with another car or just make me see where it is my fault. Please advise and let me know something soon for they want to sue me for this i need help thank you so muchyolanda gamboa 9123 admiralty ave riverside, ca.92503909-689-9805.

Driving the camry down the interstate when oil light came on.within 2-3 miles i was able to pull off and as i rolled into a gas station the engine began knocking.when towed to a toyota dealer they said the engine was ruined but claimed it wasn\\'t related to the well-known oil sludge problem.the oil had been changed every 3000-5000 miles and neither leaked nor used oil.the dealer had no explanation why the engine would so suddenly be robbed on oil that it would throw a rod and be ruined.i have since learned the engine has given so many problems that toyota discontinued it (the 2.2 4liter).since i had to have a used engine put in (toyota wanted $5300!!) i have no assurance that this engine won\\'t do exactly the same thing!!
Engine failed due to oil gelling or sludge.
My 1998 toyota camery always burned some oil.then at about 108000 miles it started burning oil at a rapid pace. I brought it in to toyota to have it looked at for the oil sludging problem ,which they know of.they said my engine is shot and i did not have the oil sludge problem, so they would not cover repairs.they said one reason i did not have this problem is because i changed oil every 3000 miles.
On 2/21/2008 i was driving on the freeway and my auto burst into flames.my auto is a 1998 toyota camry 4cyl. I received notification of a class action lawsuit about two years ago stating that toyota has an engine oil sludge defect on certain models.my auto is one of them.additionally the notification i received stated that i can take my auto into toyota to be repaired.over about two years i took my auto in with all the paper work/documents and each time toyota stonewalled me.also i just went into toyota for the same reason and with all the paper work on 2/14/2008 and again toyota told me they knew nothing about this and they would not do anything.i am very much lucky to have survived this incident on 2/21/2008.

1998 camry, 4 cylinder, 62650 miles.while driving at around 50 mph speed, heard an unusual sound and smoke coming from under the hood, pulled over to the shoulder and found there was a hole in the lower half of the engine and the oil dip stick was sheared in to 2 pieces. Mechanic told me that the engine threw a rod and put a hole. Had to replace the engine with a refurbished one at a private shop.contacted the dealer service department and was told that since the car was out of warranty, toyota will not be replacing the engine and the least quote for repair was $4500.00i bought the car used from a dealer in jan 2001 and have had regular service oil change and maintenance done on it. In feb2006 had the 60k mile service done.in may 2002 had received a letter from toyota about possible gelling issue with engine oil. Suspect the engine failure is a result of engine oil gelling.the failed engine may still be available at the shop, not sure.
Engine check light came on while driving. Dealership indicated thatvehicle needed an air fuel reservoir sensor to correct the problem. Potential of problem not yet identified. Also, dealership indicated " this is was a common problem with these vehicles.

The toyota dealership informed me that they couldn't find any oil sludging/gelling.however, they couldn't explain why the engine blew.all they could tell me is that a piston blew through the engine. Since they claimed there was no oil sludging/gelling they refused to cover costs of repair.
I changed my oil and the attendent said the oil was gelling up.since that day foward my car burns 4quarts of oil in less than 200 miles i bought the car from the dealer less than a year in a half ago.(dec 22,2002). Not one garage wants to repair my vechile they told me it was oil rings or valves but its due to the oil sludge.i called toyota dealership and they told me too bad that i had to pay for the dealer to take the head off and than let them determine if it indeed it is oil gelling. Than toyota usa would look over my file to see if it would fix the problem very rude and univiting.
On 10/19/10 my 1998 toyota camry was on file under the hood.when i park the car at stater bros and went inside to buy groceries . I head the cashier say someone car is on fire.i ran out from the parking lots and i saw my car in smoke under the hood.fire department came and try to save my car.now my car is total gone.everything burn under the hood.i would never buy toyota camry again. Due to complaint about this car.
My camry started acting funny. While leaving work to take my car to the toyota dealer, the engine started making noises so i pulled over, shut the car off and waited for the tow truck. This was wednesday june 25, 2003. On friday morning, my husband was notified that we needed a new engine because of "oil gelling" or "oil sludging" and it would be $3,500. I took all of the paperwork with a copy of the june 2002 toyota letter to my dealer to see if i would "qualify" for their support program. When i asked the service tech why the cars had not been recalled due to the extent of damage that could be caused and he told me it was only a small number of consumers. I have found that to be untrue. I would expect for toyota to pay for a new engine plus a comporable rental car until my car is fixed along with offering a extended or new warrenty sine the same problem seems to be reoccurring.
Have noticed for the past couple of months that a lot of blue-black smoke coming from the exhuaust upon startup.i have found out that a lot of toyotas have had engine failure caused by oil sludge build-up.now i'm concerned that the engine may fail soon.i have had regular oil changes (some done by toyota dealership and some by myself).the toyota dealer in coos bay assured me that this was not a problem and only happens once in about 25,000 cars.the facts seem to be quite different.
Cooling system failed.
Without warning engine died at night while driving on a dual lane highway.pulled over to the side of the highway before car momentum died.would not restart and the "engine check" light was lit.car was towed to a service repair station that evening.service station found the water pump failed resulting in the timing belt failure.belt and water pump replaced, timing reset, but failed to start.investigation revealed timing had slipped and cause was the crankshaft pulley key had sheared.that was replaced, timed again, and engine was back to normal.oldmobile parts not availiable.
Car stalled and overheated during traffic.when they tookvehicle to the dealership, the dealer stated that the coolant leaked out of the overflow bottle.the consumer has replaced the bottle twice.the manufacturer has been contacted.
Air induction hose on 1998 toyota camry le japan built is failing. The air induction hose from the air filter box that leads to the throtle body is cracking. And i have checked into this matter from reading user reviews of this year model car and im the only one who is experencing this issue. The car is still functional how ever it has a very diffucult time starting in the morning.
Consumer heard a loud noise coming from the engine, thevehicle was taken tothe dealer, the dealer noted that the timing belt had become loose and needed to be replaced.
I brought my 98 camryinto toyota city in mamaroneck, ny on 11/6/03 because of blue smoke that was coming out of the tail pipe. Seals were replaced but there was still leaking of oil. On 6/2/04 the camry has more repairs done with gaskets and seals replaced but still there was oil leaking . I brought the car back to have the leak checked and i am always told there is no leak.i have smoke coming into the car from the engine area and put a quart of oil in every week.
The "check engine" light turns on and off randomly.i replaced gas cap and no help. *la
The engine in my 1998 toyota camry threw a rod (#4) through the engine block.there were no warning signs, like abnormal engine noise or loss of power, before this catastrophic failure.the vehicle has 67000 miles and has had the oil changed within the manufacturer's recommended guidelines.also, the 45000 mile maintenance was performed at the toyota dealership.the local toyota management said that i did not posses sufficient maintenance records to support them paying for the replacement engine.i had the receipts from the oil changes.toyota corporation told me that they are not responsible for cars over 60000 miles.my complaint with the manufacturer is pending review.
Experienced a text book case of what has become known as the "toyota sludge engine" problem. Contacted toyota about spa program who referred me to the local dealer. He said unless i have documentation for an oil change every 3000 miles (manual says 7500) that toyota would not provide any financial assistance. Said that i did not "have a leg to stand on" and i was "screwed." once repairs are done and paid for i plan to submit a claim with all papers to toyota.
Engine mount insulator failed.yh
The balance shaft hit the oil pan and made a hole in the engine and the oil spread all over the engine that led to lot of smoke from the engine.

The contact owns a 1998 toyota camry. There was an oil leak inside of the oil filter. The vehicle was taken to an oil change facility where the oil filter was not installed incorrectly and caused oil to leak and damaged the engine. While driving 50 mph the engine over heated and stalled. The vehicle was towed to a different local mechanic. The second mechanic also informed him that an oil leak along with a damaged filter caused the vehicle to stall. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and current mileages were 110,000.
There was a hole located in the front of the engine block in which oil sprayed onto the exhaust causing a fire.(claim#32-v387-711)
Owner driving vehicle, came to a stop, began to accelerate, engine blew a rod through the front of the engine block.vehicle caught fire and burnt beyond recognition within 15 minutes.vehicle investigation followed because the car was under warranty, build up of sludge from engine oil.company declined to fulfill warranty obligation because of the age and mileage on the car.
While driving my car, it turned off with no warning. I could not turn the car back on as i tried, the engine light went on. I notified the dealer. The dealer informed me that my engine had seized. My car is a 98 camary with 75000 miles which was purchased from the dealer and has had all service checkups from the dealer. The dealer informed me that it would cost me 4700 dollars to replace the engine and my warranty was up in july of 2003. I am wondering what is going on with toyota. My family has had six toyotas since 1988. This car and our last toyota camary have been horrible. The 2000 needed a brand new transmission and now this. In addition to this when i called the dealer they told me to purchase another car as if it was just that easy. I am a single mother who brought a toyota because of the supposed dependablity. I guess i was wrong.
'98 toyota camry--oil light came on.within 2-3 miles i was able to pull into a service station and as i did so the engine suddenly began knocking.when towed to a toyota dealer he said the engine was gone out (ruined).this vehicle had had oil changed every 3000-5000 miles.dealer claimed this my engine had no signs of the well-known oil sludge problem common with this engine.i've since learned this engine had so many problems that it is no longer being used.what recourse is there for what appears to be a faulty design engine?my wrecker driver's father's '98 toyota camry's engine went out after only 2000! miles.
Right rear valve cap was replaced.
There is a problem with the quaker state oil filter and the threads being the reason.(claim#20-5365-973)
The engine blew in my 1998 toyota camry.it had 12300 mileage and was well maintained with no prewarnings that there was any engine trouble.i had received a letter from toyota corporation months prior to the incident, warning of oil sludging/gelling problems with this car model.the letter stated that all repair costs would be covered for damages caused by oil sludging/gelling.the toyota mechanics informed me that the engine appeared clean - no oil sludging.but, they did not know why the engine blew.they informed me that the oil might have been low.however, i had just had an oil change performed two months prior to the incident and was not informed of an oil leak, nor did my oil indicator light ever come on.even though they couldn't explain what caused the engine to blow, they would not cover any costs of repair.
My daughter has 2 1998 toyota camrys both have had massive engine block failure by the front motor mount, one resulted in a fire under the hood. Her first camry i helped her buy it used about 1 1/2 years ago (this car was actually titled in my name) and approximately 6 months ago while driving at highway speed the engine block came apart by the front motor mount spraying oil all over the engine compartment, which proceeded to catch on fire, luckily no one was hurt and the fire was contained under the hood. There was parts of the engine block, and bolts and oil scattered on the highway. That camry was not repairable. We found her another 1998 camry about two months ago and this one she bought all on her own and it is titled in her name. Well a couple of days ago her new 1998 camry had massive engine block failure at the front motor mount in the same location as the other camry. There was no fire involved on this one. The police were called to both scenes, and the fire dept. Was called on the first incident. This form does not have input for 2 vehicles. The second 1998 camry in my daughters name. We do still have possession of both vehicles and in the same condition as the day they stopped working.

The consumer received a letter fromthe manufacturer in may 2000stating that his 1998 camry had the potential of oil gelling or sludging.the letter also explained that this problem could be diagnosed by the presence of blue smoke or excessive oil consumption. The consumer vehicle didn't exhibit any signs of a problem when the letter was received.eventually the consumer started noticing smoke coming out of the tailpipe on startup and took the vehicle to the dealer. The letter was presented to the service manager.the dealer refused to diagnose the problem without the consumer paying a fee.the consumer refused to pay and the problem was never diagnose or fixed. The consumer contacted the manufacturer but they also stated that he had to pay the dealer for the diagnostic test.
Blue smoke come from tail pipe after car sit for a few days and the front right strut or something on that side rattle.the date is when i first heard the noise but the previous owner heard the noise a year or two after purchase, she had the struts changed and the noise is still there.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 60 mph on the highway, the engine blew.smoke came out of the engine compartment as the vehicle was driven off to the side of the highway.the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where the inspection determined a lifter rod had fractured and blown out the bottom of the engine casing.the service dealer and manufacturer were notified.

On a cold start, the idle air control valve failed. The car was taking to the dealer where the part was replaced. Old part not available.
While driving, smoke started coming out from under the hood. After pulling over to the side of the road and turning off the engine, within 5-8 minutes the engine burst into flames. The car was a total loss. The insurance company did not determine the cause of this incident, although obvious potential causes, such as recent service to the engine, were ruled out (there had been no recent service).

I own a toyota camry 1998 model. The engine oil leaks non-stop. Several months back i received a notice of class action settlement with the toyota company. It stated that all toyota camrys 1998 had an engine oil leak defect, and as per the class action settlement i could take my car to a toyota dealership and they would fix this problem at their cost. Also, that if i had incurred any costs trying to have this problem fixed on my own, toyota will pay such costs to the owner. Accordingly, i took my car to the dealership. They took the copy of the notice from me and informed me that it does not apply to my car. I was told that they could check and fix the problem, but i would have to pay for it.if this was the case, then why was i sent a notice in the first place to take my car to a dealership for the problem fix? this has been a very frustrating and embarrassing experience.this is my complaint, and i request help in getting this problem resolved.

I am concerned why it is that toyota did not contact me with one of the letters telling me about engine gel until i contacted them about another engine failure that i had with another car. I have spoken with many that have the toyota's that fall under the engine gel campaign and they too have not received letters about this potential problem. I am understand that toyota headed off a recall by sending out these letters. I am telling you that there are a load of people that own these cars that know nothing about the impending damage to their engines. Could you please look into this asap.

I tried working with toyota to resolve there issues, but becasue the warranty time is expired they won't assist in fixing there defects.i was told if i wanted to pay the $2,000.00 bill they would be happy to order the parts.the head lamps are so dim i have nearly hit deers in the road on 5 seperate occasions i know these can't pass fmvss requirement.the drivers seat is loose in the track and rocks when accelerating and stopping.the front struts mounting brackets rattle, shake, vibrate and bang.the steering wheel vibrates while turning.the rear stuts are too weak for the vehicle so people can't ride in the rear or the car bottoms out.the car alarm somtimes works and somtimes doesn't.the burlwood dash is splitting, craking, fading and peeling.i was told by the asst. Service mgr. I don't remember exact date when i had noticed this but it has been like that for past three years. I had not register complaint thinking it is just my model but since this has been wide spread in many toyotas i thought i should register my incident too.
I took the car to the shop and found out the car has recall. Evap system diagnosis: p0441/p0446 on all models. When driving down the road while giving the car gas you can feel it jerking like its not getting gas and when the car stops it cuts off. So when i took it to the shop they say its a recall now i am wondering if toyota is going to fix this problem because the piece is very expensive and i need my vehicle to run properly.
I started smelling gas odors inside of the car after filling the tank. Itook the car to the dealer in july 2006 and told them that i also saw gas dripping on the ground. They found nothing. I continued to have the smell. Two weeks ago i smelled the fumes inside and saw leak. Dealer replaced gas tank, saying there was rust near the top of the tank. My car is garaged, so i don't understand.
Camry gas pedal self-accelerating. We had a toyota camry 1998 (bought in toyota, morristown, nj in feb, 1998). By about 2003, the gas pedal behaved a little funny. When the car was standing still, the gas pedal would not respond when you press on it. But it would jerk and suddenly speed up when you keep pressing on it. The problem was not like the 'popular gas pedal stuck' thing described. We lived with the problem for a few years before the car get crashed and totaled (not for the pedal reason). It was my husband's car, when i occasionally drove it, it's unsafe when i stop for traffic lights, since it suddenly sped up. But my husband was used to it.
Fuel injection system surged car into wall with drivers foot on brake pedal.

While driving smoke was noticed coming from the hood, and when pulled over, the hood was popped open.burst of flames came from under the hood that was believed to have started in the fuel injection system. Dealer was contacted.
Idle air control (iac) valve has failed 2 times and has been replaced 2 times at toyota of huntington beach.first time on 3/23/2001 and second time on 1/17/2002.identical symptoms of past failures starting to appear again, as of about 10/1/2002.dt
Gas tank makes sloshing noises.
Dealer claims that i damaged the charcoal canister by 'topping off" the gas tank.his definition of "topping off" is to fill until the pump shuts off, then add a little more to get a round number total cost.since most people "top off" the tank using this definition, it would seem that this must be a design defect.the dealer says that if it is not fixed the car will fail required emissions tests, but that if it is fixed and i "top off" the tank it will fail again.there is no warning against "topping off" the tank in the owners manual.therefore normal refueling results is permanant damage to the emissions system.this means that the emissions system can not be maintained in working condition.dt
Dealer wants 80$ to tell us if gas tank purge valve is under warrenty or not. Also dealer states that door handle clip breaking is a common problem.

In 65,000 miles the fuel sensor has failed requiring replacement. Checked engine light comes on and remains on.
When releasing foot from the gas, the gas pedal will sometimes lock in the idle position requiring extra force to release it resulting in a sudden acceleration which could result in losing control of the vehicle in slippery conditions. Ts

I was sitting in the car reading, when i pressed the door unlock button on the armrest the door wouldn't unlock. The only way the door could be unlocked was to use the remote key. If a child were locked in the car on a hot day the child wouldn't be able to get out of the car.this car was manufactured in kentucky.
Door lock release switch failed.
If vehicle is locked fromoutside and someone is still inside, the locks will not let the person on the inside to get out. Door has to be opened with key from the outside. Dealer says that's normal.
Key fails to unlockeithertrunk ordoors onvehicle.problem is not weather related. It is an intermittent problem.the manufacturer installed a new lock system in the vehicle and the problem was solved.

This is the 2nd transmission that has been replaced in my 2012 hyundai genesis coup due to a manufacturing defect.the first one was grinding going into 5th gear.the second one is grinding going into 2nd and 3rd gear and leaking fluid from the main seals.the car only has 3200 miles on it purchased april 27, 2012.
All three of the rear seatbelts will not retract.i tried to put a child resraint seat in the left rear seat, i pulled the belt all the way out as my toyota manuel says to do in order to lock the child seat into place and the belt would not feed back into the retracter.i then took the seat out and put it in the right side and the same exact thing happened.that was in may 2001.a few days ago the middle seat belt did the same thing, leaving my child with no seat belt in the back and my only option is to put him in the front seat which is not safe either.i have contacted the dealer and the manufaturer of toyota and have been told that my car is no longer under warranty and it will cost about $190.00 per seat belt to get them replaced.i do not have that kind of money and feel that i should not have seat belt problems in a car that is only three years old.i have a high amount of miles on my vehicle butmost of those miles did not even have anyone using the rear seat or seatbelts so they should not have malfunctioned.i have had many cars some of which i had for 10 years and longer.never have i had a problem with the seat belts.

Gear shift stuck in park, repairs were made.
The vehicle's abs and traction control warning lights have been activated and the dealer can not determine the cause.the dealer informed the consumer problem could be with either the abs actuator or the internal ecu leaving an open source code.consumer is very concerned that the problem can not be diagnosed and is concerned about personal safety if components do not function as expected.ts
Vehicle was in neutral ,struck gear shift by accident without applying button on gear shift, putting vehicle into drive, causing uncertain movement of vehicle. Owner is very concerned for safety.
I shifted from "park" to "drive", the transmission assembly cable broke.the vehicle had to be towed.a dealership claimed to have part in stock, upon arrival i was told part was not available to me for purchase. We purchased our 1998 toyota camry from my husband's 70 year old parents last year.there are 82,000 miles as of 1/08.there are two broken seatbelts in the back seat(passenger side and middle), and both front seatbelts either do not retract or have to be manually fed back into the retractor.is there any kind of recall regarding this issue?

Starting in 2015, three of the 5 seat belts in my 1998 camry do not remain latched, or fail to initially latch.as a (retired) mechanical engineer, i disassembled them to understand the problem.the defect is in the anchor mechanism with the "press" button on it. The "press" button has a metal spring mounted on the red plastic part, and the plastic has gradually cracked at the spring mount.this metal spring is what pushes the metal block through the rectangular hole in the shoulder belt coupler, when it is plugged into the seat belt anchor and latched properly.eventually, the crack grows to the point that the metal spring cannot exert enough force to reliably latch to the shoulder belt.it may initially latch and feel secure, but can then come loose several minutes later when driving the car.i plan to include 3 photos of the problem part, one showing the crack in the plastic.the vehicle has not been in any accidents, so the seat belt problem has not resulted in any injuries to myself or my passengers.the local toyota service department informed me that there was no extended warranty coverage for seat belts, so i bought new toyota replacement parts for the defective belt anchors.we live in the desert, so long-term heat and cold cycles could be a contributing factor.the spring has its heaviest load on the plastic mount when the seat belt is not engaged, so the crack could possibly start, or grow, even when the seat belt is not being used.
While making a slight turn, the steering continued to turn right and the front wheels locked without warning. As a result the consumer lost control of the vehicle and collided into a stone wall. The dual airbags did not deploy and the consumers seat belt did not lock. The driver sustained chest and back pain due to hitting her chest on the steering wheel. The cause has yet to be determined. I will have to look for legal advise within next couple of days and see what they say. By the way air bags were not activated.please let me know if there was any lawsuit or compensation for this kind of fatal accident. Thank you.

I bought my car new in may 1998. I had the brakes replaced at least 3 times the first time being 11/8/99. I have complained several times of front end noise, car drifting, and steering vibrations. Each time i was told it was either incorrect tire pressure, out of balance or alignment. Most of the time i was told the noise is normal road noise and the drifting is normal drifting. I think something needs to be done about this. My car is no longer under warranty. I bought a new car to avoid having to pay for all these expensive repairs and because i had a 7 month old baby. I now have two children and sometimes i am afraid to drive them in my car. My car still makes the noise, drifts, steering wheel vibrations. Ihave even reported clunking noises from the bottom of the car and was told it needed to be greased or the bolts tightened. It seems toyota has known about this problem all along and decided to do nothing about it. Toyota should be forced to fix all the vehicles with this condition. It shouldn't take someone's death before something is done. I am a first toyota buyer and very disappointed. I can not afford to fix a suspension system that was defective at the time of purchase, nor should i have to for a $20,000 car that is barely 5 years old with only 53,000 miles on it. I thought the mechanics were right about normal noise until i saw all the complaints about the suspension system. Please help. Thank you. Jb

When pushing the brake pedal brakes make a loud noise, there is also extended stopping distance. Two repairs have been done, dealer states they will not repair again because it is the design of the model.
The brakes on my 1998 toyota camry wore out at 15000 miles. The service writer at the service dealer told me that the 1997 and 1998 camry have a design defect that causes more pressure to be applied to the front brakes than to the back brakes, causing the front brakes to wear out prematurely. My power steering pump developed a leak before it was replaced by the servicing dealer at 19000 miles, causing the vehicle to have steering and control problems.
When brakes are applied, sounds like metal to metal grinding. Hadtaken vehicle to dealer. After repairwork was performed, abslight came on & vehicle would skid when brakeswere applied. Brakes had been modified.
While driving the brakes are whinning..the dealer inserted a brake kit for stopping power, and the brakes still don't work.
While parkingvehicle took off about a mile per hour, crashinginto a wall. Consumerstepped on the brakes, but they did not work, alsoair bags did not deploy.
Sudden accelleration of car. Brakes would not stop vehicle. Had to put car in "park" to stop vehicle.engine continued to rev as if gas pedal pushed to floor. Dealer can't find anything wrong.
When applying the brakes there is a rumbling noise and vibration. Also the vehicle pulls to the right and has a longer stopping distance. Dealer has adjusted brakes 4 times, and problem still exists.
When driving at highway speed and applying the brakes a thumping and clunking noisewas coming the from brakes.
Travelling the freeway, i needed to slow the vehicle but when i started to move my right foot, something held it in place. I lifted my right foot and proceeded to depress the brake pedal but the pedal would not move. I two-footed the brake pedal and heard something crack afterwhich the pedal started to move and i rgained the use of my brakes. An examination revealed a plastic duct wedged between the brake pedal and the floor board. The duct was part of the ventilation system which had fallen off and wedged between the brake pedal and the floor board.
While driving vehicle at any speed consumer could step on the brake pedal to stop or to slowdownvehicle, but the brakes won't work, and make noise l grinding metal to metal noise.
Anti-lock brake actuator was replaced by the autobody shop which repaired the accident damage.
Brakes continue to fail intermittently even though a brake kit was installed at 4,000 miles. New master cylinder was installed as well. At times brakes go all the way to the floor and car does not stop. Suddenly loud noise happens and car jerks and stops. All struts have been replaced and solved crunching noises. Relay switch installed to solve lock problem. Car is falling apart before my eyes!!

The brakes are making grinding noise. They have been changed once by the dealership at 13000 miles, and then at 27000 miles they were again changed by sears. But the brakes are getting worn out easily and the grinding sound will not stop. The left and right seat belts have both failed at 20000 and 27000. They get stuck and wont come in or out. Since buying my toyota in april of 1998, i have needed to replace the brakes and rotors 3 times.i still continue to have screeching and grinding noises.i have been told by toyota dealerships that this noise has been a noted problem.i find this to be unacceptable for a "new" car, i bought a new car to avoid making repairs and i have made more on this toyota and its bad breaks than i would have spent on keeping my used rodeo.i mean with regular mainantence check, oil change, car payments, $200 brake jobs every 8 to 12 months, this is ridiculous. I have also had problems with clunking noises coming from my front suspension, especially if i go over a rough road.for a company that has a reputation for superior cars, this has been a disappointing first buy as i find the car to have a very, very poor braking system and suspension.from reading your technical bulletins, there has been 90 reported complaints on the brakes and 31 reported complaints on the suspension.how many more complaints need to be filed before a recall on these brakes are done?

Thank you. Jb

Thank you.
While making a slight turn, the steering continued to turn right and the front wheels locked without warning. As a result the consumer lost control of the vehicle and collided into a stone wall. Nhtsa campaign id number: 99v307000.... Regarding ssc-x06 1995-1998 japan built toyota camry steering wheel set nut safety recall - i scheduled an appointment through toyota customer service (1-800-331-4331) for repair according to the aforementioned notice. I called on 28 june'01 (toyota service reference # 200106280784) and toyota scheduled me for service with michaels' toyota of bellevue, wa, 120 116th av. Ne, bellevue, wa 98004 (ph: 425-455-9500) in the next few days. But i didn't get a call back from micahel's toyota for the service date. As a follow-up, i called toyota again and they flagged a service call for micahel's toyoyta to schedule service within 24 hours. But till date, this has not happened. I haven't been called by them for scheduling a service. I took the case again with toyota customer service and they have again notified michaels' toyota to schedule the service. I feel i'm just wasting my time calling them up and thought of bringing the issue with nhtsa so as to make them aware that toyota is not taking these recalls seriously and not giving enough importance to this issue. I'm quite concerned about my and my family's safety and the dealership doesn't take it as a priority - maybe because it's a free service. They're not getting paid for this and mybe considering this as a waste of time. Hope some mesaures will be taken in future so that manufacturers and dealers do not take people for a ride and follow nhtsa guidelines. P.s. I bought my car thru' kearny mesa toyota, san diego and moved to bellevue, wa in may, that was the time when i got this recall notice and scheduled the service when i settled in my new apartment. The brakes on my 1998 toyota camry wore out at 15000 miles. Car drifts to left at all speeds. Reported to dealer twice. 1st time, on 7/20/98 at 3,300 miles. Dealer claimed steering wheel was off center and they realigned it. Also, dealer stated that air pressure was uneven in all tires and they corrected this. When i picked up the car, they had put 32 lbs in the left front tire, 30 lbs in the right front tire, and 34 lbs in the two rear tires. Complained immediately that the car still drifted to the left. Dealer rescheduled for 8/10/98 and car was then serviced with 3,955 miles. Dealer claimed they checked front end alignment and then rotated tires to correct for a radial pull. The dealer would not replace the tires and stated they would correct themselves after a few hundred miles were put on with the new rotation. Tires were then rotated by the same dealer at 9,824 miles on 3/10/99, and the drift to the left is as bad as ever. I believe something other than a radial pull is wrong.

At the toyota dealership that toyota is aware of all these defects and it's a result of poor engineering and vehicle test validation.i then heard him tell a mechanic "what people think just because it's a toyota it doesn't ever break" he then laughed and said these cars are the worst.i think we need some help in making toyota fix there known defects because this is uncalled for.

1998 toyota camry (139k miles) rear driver side tie rod break while driving.purchased two rear tires and car alignment mid october.two weeks later while driving on a city road, felt a problem with wheels, pulled off road, called tow truck.tie rod had broken into two equal sized pieces.tie rod was veryrusted and corroded and missing the sleeve that covers over both ends.part was either defective from the beginning or somehow lost the sleeve.it was impossible to align the car. However the tire place charged me for an alignment when i bought the tires.more annoying was the fact that they never informed me the tie rod was damaged/rusted and liable to break.i had no indication the tie rod was defective and have since learned that a break like that is rare.fortunately i was driving slowly and no damage to the car or injury.lastly i have tires rotated twice a year at local toyota place and was never informed the tie rod was defective/ rusted and missing the sleeve

Defective front & rear struts. Dealer has added strut plates & replaced all 4 struts. Caused front tires to fail @ 12,000 mi. Struts are loose & rattle.i was told by dealer that this is a "design defect" of the 1998-1999 camry.multiple tsb's and complaints exist for this problem.dealer said he has a one month lead time on ordering front strut plates since so many vehicles are affected by this potentially hazardous problem.toyota uses the strut plates as a quick fix instead of redesigning the suspension.no real solution exists for problem due to design limitations.( dot number: tire size: p205/65r15 )

Vehicle drifts from the right to the left. Vehicle performs a lane change from right to the left on all types of roads at all speeds. The faster the speed the sooner the lane change.
Poor braking system and suspension; disappointing first toyota buy.
The front suspension was excessively shaky.it vibrated and made a lot of noise when going over a rough road.from my research on this subject at the nhtsa web site, there are 52 reports of this problem with the 1998 toyota camry model.i had the problem fixed at a dealership in louisiana.they replaced the strut mounts on both the right and left side of the front suspension at a cost of $420.82.they told me this was not covered under warranty or recall by toyota.it is my wish that toyota be held responsible for what is a design defect in the '98 camry.

With the squeaks and cracking noises that comes from the suspension make you wonder.i have had a number of lube jobs on the front suspension. I have had the drivers seat track replaced because of to much movement... A rocking chair. The dealer finally supported me on the squeaky brakes with the unbearing feeling of that grind.the repair kit works.the camry has a great feel when driving a speed limit under 45mph, anything over that speed the car suspension doesn't handle well.my car pulls to the right most of the time.i thought it was the tires. I have had them rotated and balanced according the the maintenance schedules. The goodyear integerity's has to be replaced. All i got out of them is32,000 miles.fuel is another thing i brought up at my last service.putting a lower grade 83 oxctain makes the car exhaust smell really bad.this started around 18,000 miles or so.now just not to get that smell, i'm using the highest grade possible 93 oxctain.other then that the car has been really go to me.my service advisor has worked really hard in getting my trust.he hasn't fail me yet. Front supension makes clunking and banging noise when driving over even small pot holes. Noise gets much worse with larger pot holes. Noise started around 25k miles.suspect front struts and strut mounts.
Just before 30,000 miles my right font suspension began to rattle occasionally. The car now has 93,000 miles and the rattle is still heard now and then.numerous trips to the shop have not turned up any cause.
Noisy suspension front & rear. Roadway bumps cause the front suspension system to make a banging and bumping noise. The front struts had replacement mounts installed but did not eliminate the banging and bumping noise from the front struts. The rear struts bottom out with minor bumps in a roadway. The case is in arbitration with toyota and toyota is again to replace the front strut mounts with a newer 2nd generation replacement strut mount. Toyota is going to replace both rear struts with replacment struts. At this time the work has not been conducted so i do not know whether the 2nd generation strut mounts and replacement struts for the rear will elinimate the suspension noise. I've told toyota i believe the strut system is badly designed and that the entire suspension system is weak. If toyota's additional actions don't stop the bumping noise, the case goes back to arbitration with toyota.

Dealer suggests trying different parts but none seems to correct the problem.its getting expensive and the problem is still there. Thank you. Jb
Tires wobble/vibrate 70-75mph being the worst. Multiple trips to dealer.6 tires replaced. Multiple time balancing tires. Latest result - per dealer "we can't fix because it happens with speeds over 65mph and toyota will not authorize repairs on issues occuring over 65 mph.also, brakes make bad grinding noise and squeeks forward/reverse - advised it is becuase of the material of the pads.pads changed once and have anti-lock brakes, but have left long skid mark with one tire and car pull to the side.

Problems with rear suspension bottoming out going over dips, bumps, etc. Have become more pronounced over time.anytime you have any passengers, even one small child, in rear seat, the car bottoms out and scrapes the street surface.even backing out of our driveway, which is slightly elevated, causes the rear to bottom out and scrape the driveway.when driving at the speed limit, it will bottom out on slightly rough road.we have contacted the dealership's service department but they have advised us that there is nothing that can be done about the problem.they are very aware of the problem with the suspension but insist that toyota built the car with a soft suspension for a soft ride.the result is a car that bottoms out continously if you have any passengers in the rear of the compartment or a load in the trunk.

This description is in reference to a continuing mechanical error that has affected my 1998 toyota camry le and the terrible way my situation has been dealt with by toyota customer service. The piece was nowhere to be found and i immediately became concerned as to its whereabouts. At that time, i visited my local toyota service center and contacted the service managerafter explaining to them the situation, they said there was no way to determine how the breakoriginated.upon further inspection of the dip stick under a microscope it was obvious there was a clean break on the metal. This ruled out a bending of the dip stick, and could only mean the metal broke off by rubbing against another part of the engine, which was my immediate concern.on september 15th, i contacted the customer center to make them aware of my continued concern. We agreed that obviously if the dip stick would be found, the customer (myself), would not be responsible for any of the labor, as i was taking a pro-active approach by looking into the matter.on the 27th of september, i visited toyota to get the work done. Once the pan was pulled, the 1- inch piece of the dip stick was found in the oil pan. Upon re-inspection of the engine with the dip stick mounted normally, the technician and myself were able to see no interference. However, once we mounted the dip stick backwards, it came into contact with part of the engine. Although the dip stick is not supposed to be inserted that way, it still should not come into contact with any part of the motor and we concluded this was the reason for the break. I was given zero assistance from toyota after this, and was not reimbursed for the $270 that was paid in good faith. This is why i am contacting you today.
Inquiry on recalls for 1998 toyota camry.mrrecall #99v307000/steering wheel & handle bar, and recall#01v012000/vehicle speed control.scc

Recall 01v012000 concerning accelerator cable failure. While driving in cruise controlledwhen the brakes were pressed the cruise control cruise would be suspended.after the vehicle completely stopped, the cruise could be used again.vin was not included. *sc
Gas pedal sticks at a full stop and to accelerate the driver must press hard on the accelerator that causes jerking motion in vehicle.when vehicle is cold, an extra hard stomping of accelerator is required to get the gas pedal to work.
Gas pedal sticks. One day driving down the road coming from a complete stop from a red to green light the vehicle would not accelerate, so i had to push down hard on the gas pedal to make the car go. This is a known issue for 98 camry's. This is very dangerous coming from 0 mph going to an unknown speed trying to get the vehicle to move and consumes a lot of gas when this happens. Toyota needs to look into this for a recall.
While slowly exiting a drive through at 5mph the car suddenly accelerated, shot across a street, and did not stop until hittinga snow drift and fence. Braking had no effect.damage to car and property. Driver had to crawl out passenger side window. The vin began with a letter j.
The contact owns a 1998 toyota camry. Whenever the contact engaged theaccelerator pedal she noticed that the pedal slightly became stuck and required more than normal pressure in order to press the pedal. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 124,960.
Sudden acceleration resulted in loss of control/crash.
I had used the coast on my cruise control to reduce my set speed from 78mph to 71mph, after about 50 yards, my cruise control sped up on its own to about 76mph before i tapped the brakes and cut the cruise control off. After about 3 minutes, i cut the cruise control back on and went to use the set button to set my speed at 71mph. When i pushed the set button, the cruise control did not 'lock in' to the 71mph but instead started to speed up beyond 71mph and at 75mph i tapped the brake and cut off the cruise control. The next day, the next three time i went to cut the cruise control on and went to push the set button to set it at the speed i was going, the car always took off beyond what i was wanting to set it at and causing me to tap the brakes and i was forced to cut it off because after i had tapped the brake and let off the brake it would start to increase speed again.
While driving 30 mph vehicle accelerated. Consumer applied brakes butdid not slow vehicle down. Consumer then shifted to neutral, rpms finally went down and engine stopped revving.
Consumers 23 year old daughter was involved in an incident along with her friend. Where they were attempting to take an exit, when the vehicle would not allow her to slow down.vehicle accelerated on its own, causing them a life threatening experience.the two ran of of the road in order to block from hitting 0ther vehicles, and in order to not hit a tree when they ran of the road, they had gotten back onto the road after the passenger had informed the driver that the road was clear enough to get back on.they did so, luckily not hitting anyone, they ended up in a vacant parking lot where the driver had taking the keys out of the ignition.during the accident the driver tried to brake and even pull the emergency brake and the vehicle rejected that.vehicle was towed back to the service center, where three weeks prior, the consumer had an oil change, lubrications, and the tires rotated.they tested the vehicle, and reported that they found nothing.the service center suggested that they could clean the throttle linkage and lubricate a specific cable (name not available).vehicle was then inspected at a toyota dealer who did not see a problem either and even allowed one of the employees to take the vehicle home for further inspection and he found no problem as well.consumer stated that the dealer had been able to clear the airbag sign that was displayed on the dashboard.*scc
The contact owned a 1998 toyota camry. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning. The contact stated that he was unable to stop the vehicle when the brakes were applied. As a result, the vehicle crashed into a fence and dropped into a ditch. A police report was filed and the driver was suffering from back pain. The passenger sustained bruises, a contusion, chest pain, a broken rib, and skin damage. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 100,000.
Engine starts and stalls. Rpm's won't stay up. Have to use gas and brake together until idle stays up enough to keep car running. Idle speed control valve replaced @ 38,315 mi on 6/20/02.replaced again @ 45,703 mi on 8/22/03. Service mgr said they have "changed manufacturers, so should be ok now". Problem recurred @ 56,000 miles in mid-june.it's a progressive failure, so will return to dealer in the very near future. This amounts to 3 replaced idle speed control valves in 20,000 miles.service will replace part, but i must pay labor.
As i was driving, the tachometer would race higher as the speedometer would not register. The car would slow down and i had to rapidly press on the gas pedal for spurted acceleration not under my control. If i was using the speed control device, it would shut down. This happened many times between 2004-2007 and once again this year in january. When i took it to toyota dealership in earlier years, they couldn't find any thing wrong and it didn't repeat itself when they drove it.
We have a 1998 toyota camry in which the accelerator sometimes sticks after the vehicle has been driven and comes to a stop for a stop sign, red light, etc.the accelerator seems to be allowed to be depressed a very miniscule amount and then it stops or gets stuck.if you push down hard at this point it clicks, releases, and the accelerator is allowed to continue to be depressed as far as you wish.when it clicks it is as if it pops over whatever it was stuck on.
Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration.
The contact owns a 1998 toyota camry.the contact stated that the vehicle does not respond when depressing the accelerator. The contact is concernedthat if he needs to accelerate rapidly he can not because of the delay before the vehicle picks up speed. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they could not duplicate failure. The contact feels that the failure is due to acomputer defect, because sometimes the vehicle is unresponsive while depressing the accelerator. Hewrote a letter to the manufacturer in reference to the acceleration failure and they had not responded.. The approximate failure mileage was 100 and the current mileage was 15000.updated 11/16/10. *lj
Was driving my 1998 toyota camry. Came to a stop light.light turned yellow. I put on the brake and the car continued to go forward. Fortunately the traffic crossing the road had not started.i pumped the brakes and it did not stop.i took the car to my mechanic and was told there were no brake problems.it was an isolated incident.
Consumer received recall notice 01v012000.dealership would not cooperate in servicingvehicle.the vehicle was repaired at another dealer.
When the cruise control was engaged and the brake pedal was pressed to disengage it there was no throttle response.when the vehicle stopped and the pedal was pressed to accelerate there was no throttle response.the consumer had to push the gas pedal forward and back to obtain acceleration.the dealer recommended a throttle body cleaning and idle speed control replacement.
When i was driving in a residential neighborhood and coming to a stop sight to make a right turn. All the sudden, the car sped up and the brake was failing. Luckily there was no car in the opposite side. I was able to pull the car to the curb. I checked the brake and was functioning. Later, i have the car towed to piercey toyota to diagnosis and they could not find anything wrong.

1998 toyota camry. Consumer states sudden unintended acceleration *tgwthe consumer was involved in an accident due to unwanted acceleration. The vehicle was totaled by the insurance company.
The contact owns a 1998 toyota camry le which was purchased brand new in 1997. He stated that the accelerator pedal would intermittently remain stuck in position causing the vehicle to accelerate rapidly. The failure was exhibited most frequently while accelerating from a stop sign or red light. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where he was advised that the driver's side floor mats were causing the failure; however, the failure persisted when all mats were removed from the vehicle. The dealer investigated further but could not identify a problem. No repairs were made to the vehicle. The failure became progressively worse. The failure mileage was 80,000 and current was 110,000.

Consumer stated on 2 occasions the throttle engaged by itself, causing the vehicle to lurch foward and crash.
Our 1998 toyota camry has what we have called a "sticky" gas pedal, but it hasn't gotten "stuck".the biggest problem in our minds was the aggravation of the "stickiness" while driving.now i am wondering if we shouldn't have had it changed years ago.i just assumed we could pull over safely if it were to become stuck while driving.could this be a part of the same issue they are having with the newer cars?what action should we take, if any?
The contact owns a 1998 toyota camry xle. While driving into a parking space at very low speeds the contact applied pressure to the brakes, the vehicle accelerated, and crashed into a wall. The contact was not injured and the air bags did not deploy. The floor mat advisory is not related to the vehicle accelerating. The contact is aware of the safety risk involved. The current and failure mileages were 23,900.
While parkingvehicle took off about a mile per hour, crashinginto a wall. Consumerstepped on the brakes, but they did not work, alsoair bags did not deploy.
I own a 1998 toyota camry le.the accelerator had been sticking for the past three years all the times and progressively getting worst.i have to step onto the pedal hard very often from a full stop to un-stick the pedal on a routine basis.about two years ago, the cruise control race up and down, then not responsive for a brief period of time.since the accelerator is a cable system, i have try to lubricate the cable link many times using different lubricant, but nothing work.therefore, i am driving around with a sticking accelerator, and cannot be sure if it relates to the possible electronic problems.once in a while the engine race up an down when the car is in idle.the failure is continuous.the mileage on this car is now about 157,000 miles.
The contact owns a 1998 toyota camry. While exiting the drive- way at 5 mph, the vehicle accelerated without intention into the building.the vehicle was moderately damaged, but there was a hole in the building.the manufacturer had not been contacted. Sudden accelleration of car. Brakes would not stop vehicle. Had to put car in "park" to stop vehicle.engine continued to rev as if gas pedal pushed to floor. Dealer can't find anything wrong.
Consumerhad two accidents in the past two months due tosudden acceleration. Dealer not notified.
Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration while approaching a stop light resulting in the driver hitting a cement barrier, injuring her back and breaking her wrist.
I drive a 1998 toyota camry ce. The accelerator pedal sticks when trying to accelerate on a daily basis. This occurs when accelerating from an idle, low rpm, or low mph. The sticky accelerator can be cured by coming off the pedal 100% and gradually depressing it again. For some reason, the accelerator pedal does not stick the 2nd time. Please advise how i should deal with this potentially dangerous issue.
I own a 1998 toyota camry. Over the past 3 years, (this being year #3), i have had my gas pedal serviced because it sticks, usually after stops and while in traffic if i take my foot off the accelerator and re-engage. Toyota does not have my vehicle on the list and it should be! as of this date, my accelerator is sticking again and i will have to ,again, pay for it. I think this problem goes beyond the current limitations of the existing recall list and should be investigated. Furthermore, i did not receive a letter regarding thisrecall nhtsa 01v012000- "vehicle speed control" and according to my vin#, i should have.
1998 toyota camry.consumer states unintended acceleration causing a crash. *tgwthe consumer stated in the seconds the vehicle left the street, it jumped the curb, ran over a small tree trunk, crossed two driveways and hit a 25 year old dogwood head-on.the vehicle was stopped by the tree being uprooted because the soil was saturated from the recent heavy rains. The tress and branches destroyed the front of the vehicle and its undercarriage. The vehicle came to rest after it hit the second dogwood tree.the windshield was intact, however, the air bags did not deploy. Updated 03/24/10.
The contact owns a 1998 toyota camry. The contact stated that in november 2008 while driving at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. She applied her foot to the brake pedal and the vehicle "spun outward". No warning lights were illuminated. The failure occurred several times. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that her vehicle was not part of any recalls. The oil pump was replaced and the pedal system was cleaned at the contacts expense. The failure had not occurred since the vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 116,000. The current mileage was approximately 117,000.
Undesired acceleration, not related with stick gas pedal. On february 16, 2008, i drove my toyota camry le 1998 home with all my family on board after shopping activities. I was driving at around 35 mph south on waltham street in lexington, ma. When we were passing an intersection of waltham/concord, i started to slow down the vehicle to around 20 mph as our home approaching. The car slowed down normally to around 20 mph and maintained at that speed for about 100 feet distance. At around 200-300 feet distance from the lexington drive (where our apartment located), the toyota camry suddenly accelerated by itself to around 50-60 mph, while my foot was still on the brake pedal. I was in a complete state of panic, as whole family was watching (and screaming) our car speeding toward the intersection of waltham st and lexington drive, where there was a truck almost right in front of us. I was almost standing on the brake pedal, and also very quickly pulled the parking brake, and moved the gear shifted to neutral. The car slowed down to around 40 mph. At this time, my car was already 30 feet from the intersection of waltham/lexington dr, where i supposed to turn right. With my camry moving at around 40 mph, i did feel safe to make the right turn. And i couldn't?t move forward either with a truck now right in front of us (the truck was to make a left turn from lexington drive to waltham street). The only option for me was to crash my car into a street divide on lexington drive to avoid hitting the truck in front of us, or tip over by turning right at high speed. After crashed on the street divide, hit and destroyed a light pole on the street divide, my car came to a complete stop. No-one was injured physically (lots headache due to panic screaming). The car suffered quite damage under and at front. At this moment, my car was still drivable. Interestingly, the car was running normal again then. Conclusion: the undesired acceleration was not caused by sticking gas pedal.
Over the last year or so, i have encountered an intermittent issue where the accelerator on my 98 camry becomes hard to depress after sitting at a stop light/sign. Tapping the pedal multiple times finally allows the pedal to release. Have not been able to determine what circumstances cause the problem, but it is only after coming to a stop.i have not experienced issues with uncontrolled acceleration, but suspect that may be next.
The contact owned a 1998 toyota camry. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration. The brakes did not function even when the brake pedal was depressed. As a result, the vehicle crashed between the contact's tree and a neighboring house. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard where the vehicle was deemed destroyed. A police report was filed and there were no injuries. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 47,000.
Gas pedal sticks while driving or moving after a stop signal . It does everyday when i drive .told the dealer , they said my vehicle year is notin recall by toyota now. No repairs done now. Also lighting systemit blows light bulb , always one has to be out or else it will blow out couple hours.
Pulling 1998 toyota camry into parking space.foot on brake.put into park.car suddenly began accelerating.tried reverse, didn't stop.tried park again standing on brakes.didn't stop.went over curb down hill into creek.air bags did not deploy when front of car hit bank of creek.saw puff of smoke after hitting bank come from under car.turned car off immediately.
My mother's 1998 toyota camry experienced the gas pedal sticking on her car on a regular basis, in 2006, to the point that the car would not go after attempting to take off after a stop or after starting up the car. This was experienced over a 3 month period wherein it would take anywhere from 5-10 minutes before the gas pedal would work to take off from the stop point.this continued until 12/06 at which time the gas pedal would not accelerate at all while sitting at a red light on a busy highway in the middle of traffic.she attempted to take off from the stop point for over 30 minutes until someone phoned the police to report that she was in the middle of the highway and could not take off.the police showed up and attempted to accelerate the car with no success.the car was then pushed to an auto repair shop who repaired the gas pedal.she was charged $50 for the repair.the toyota recall covers only the cars from 2007-2010, but this problem exists on cars prior to 2007 as this is what happened to my mother's 1998 camry.this needs to be addressed by toyota on models pre-2007 as there is uncertainty that the repair to my mother's gas pedal is a permanent fix.

Simply put.the gas pedal sticks.my wife has found the gas pedal to stick while she is driving.in the past, the gas pedal would come up in a second or so.she did not realize what was happening.she thought her shoe was getting in the way or something.but on the evening of march 12th the pedal was sticking down for about 5-10 seconds as she was trying to slow down for an intersection.it finally came up and she could come to a stop.she called me immediately and i indicated that the car needs to go in immediately.the earliest the dealer would take the car was the morning of march 14th.when i explained it to the service guy, he knew exactly what was wrong. He explained to me that the air intake for the engine is connected to the throttle body.the air intake flaphas a build up around 15,000 and it will not close properly.this will cause the gas pedal to stick.he told me that i need to have this serviced every 15,000 miles from here on in.he wrote on the service slip "engine minor".i called toyota consumer service and they indicated that this is an usual incident.however, he said in the same conversation that this problem has occurred with the same year model on other cars.the general emphasis on his part was i was over reacting and indicated this problem will not happen again.this car has only 50,000 miles.toyota's stance was that this problem has happened on other cars besides toyota.i am pleading with this organization to investigate this matter.i feel my wife's car is not completely safe unless toyota replaces the part in a specified amount of time or redesigns the assembly and does a recall.

There was no prior events leading up to the car fire.the day of the fire the cruise control would not work.as the car was traveling, it decreased and increased in power quickly and frequently.while traveling on interstate 80 the car suddenly lost power, and the gas would not increase the speed of the car.we pulled off to the side of the road , and immediately noticed smoke coming out of the front hood of the car.we got out of the car and quickly saw flames coming from under the front hood.we could not get the hood opened because the flames were too close.we attempted to put out the fire by using four fire extinguishers from pedestrians.before the fire fighters got to the site.the entire front of the car was engulfed in flames.we noticed about 50 yards of fluid on the ground preceding the site of the fire.the fluid was dark and resembled oil.it just so happens that we were moving that day, so we lost a lot of personal items in the fire (clothing, electronics, pictures).we only had liability auto insurance, so the car was not replaced.there was too much damage to repair the car.

I have a question as to if there have been any other reported problems with the actual rim of the tire, the wheel itself. My brand new tire would lose air and no leak could be found, so i replaced the tire with another new one. The problem kept occuring - finally the culprit was found to be a small pinhole leak in the actual wheel, located on the far inside. I was told by 3 separate mechanics that this hole could not have been caused by any type of machinery and it might be a defect in the rim itself. My question is if this is a defect of the constructionand if any other complaints have been reported.i dont have my vin # as my car is not with me right now. I can supply later if needed. Should i contact a local toyota dealer? thanks for your time
