8/2003 bought car. At 75.000 miles, freeze plugs started to go. One after the other. Leaving me stranded many times. After we replaced the freeze plugs, 76.000 miles the car started dumping its coolant through the overflow tank.. Could not get answers from phillips toyota. Started loosing oil. The obd light has never come on. The car runs quite and smooth. Made several attempts to take care of this problem with the corporation, but they will not help. Also, the brakes have always made loud noises, and the cruise control has a mind of its own. Car has now, 130000 miles on it, and all i can do, is add water every 25 miles or so. None of the shops we have taken it to can tell us what the problem is. Can you help me please.

I bought the car brand new toyota camry le in nov. 95 it was model 96.an ongoing problem ofstarting the car. When i start the car whether its morning or in the afternoon, once i release the key it dies. I've been going to 2 toyota dealers and theirdiagnosed is always the idle control. I believe the problem started in 1997, then again in 1999.i went to toyota north hollywood and they fixed it by replacing the idle valve itself, soiwas told.then may 2000, i had a problem again when in my dashboard the warning "check engine " lit.so i went again to have it fixed. Then this time, i am having a problem again starting the car, the engine dies and i have to step on gas pedal for more than 2 minutes to start it , whether it's morning or afternoon. I went back to toyota service this time in toyota wondries alhambra where i bought the car. And they said they need to replace the idle control valve again and it will cost again $330.why isthis an ongoing problem? iknow dozens of cars from my friends and families but they dontgo through the same problem every other year. Please help.

Starter failed.

Vehicle would not start after sitting for 2 days.

Starter failure.

Starter failed, causing vehicle to stall.

Starter panel failed to work. This would causevehicle to stall out for no reason or warning. Has happened at least three times.

Dates of service for the same problem: 7/17/96, 7/29/96, 9/06/96, 9/20/96, 11/02/96, 07/10/97,10/06/97 dealer turned off engine light but problem was only temporarily fixed.5/14/98 is the most recent date when engine light illuminated & turned off by itself 3 days later, therefore 5/14/98 occurrence was not brought in for service. Dealer had concluded the cause to be several things. Their first diagnosis was that the light being set off by electricalmalfunction in alarm wiring (alarm was installed by the same dealer), the next diagnosis was it was due to bad charcoal cannisterfor which the parts were specially ordered & car was brought in for service from date 9/12/96 to 9/19/96. The problem was shortly fixed for the engine light went on again and car was brought in again on 11/02/96. It was a hassle to keep bringing in the car only to have the engine light on 1-2 weeks later.i have been giving up on this problem (ie bringing in to the dealer). The problem still exists. I just ignore it& the light would go off by itself which is equivalent to the result of my dealer's service, only ignoring it saves me time & energy. Dealer keeps telling me it's not dangerous and keep bringing the car in whenever this happens again.

Turn signal blinks too fast due to loose rear wire connection. *sd

My 1996 toyota camry caught on fire while on the road. The vehicle was tottalled.

Engine caught on fire while driving down the highway.

Vehicle was parked for period of 10 minutes and under the hood fire broke out due to anelectrical short, will provide more information.

Vehicle has experienced continued starting problems due to faulty wiring to the main engine harness, prior repairs of the egr valve did not rectify start up failure.*mjs

The engine seized and blew while driving on the interstate, which caused a catastophic fire and complete damage to the entire engine and surrounding parts. It was a potentially disastrous event that could have caused great injury. We are contacting toyota regarding the newsworthy "engine sludge" problem that they are admitting in 1996-2000 camrys (ours was 1996) and there claim of honoring engine damage claims.

The steering sucks ive tried everything but nothing it still drives my sucks

Took my car in to have the timing belt replaced and to find out what the cause of these problems were; car worked fine otherwise: rattle ling noises coming from valve cover, engine consuming coolant, front engine seals leaking. Total cost for these repairs was $1992.42got my car back from the dealer, four days later the car dies on the road. Car was towed back to dealer at their expense. Dealer found that the timing belt had skipped. They replaced the timing belt, declared car fixed and gave me the keys. I drove off and got as far as two blocks away from dealer before the car died again. This time the dealer said that the problem was due to engine gel. The dealer said the repairs would be covered by toyota but only if i could show proof of oil changes receipts, which i provided.i'm now trying to recover a refund for the repairs that i previously paid for that were due to the engine gel problems.

Complain i own a 1996 toyota camry that recently experienced an engine damage due to the build-up of oil sludge before 80,000 miles. My car has the same 2.2l 4 cylinder engine as their camry 1997-2001 models, which toyota agreed to cover the cost of repairing those engines. However, despite the fact that my car has the same engine and it was produced two months prior to that time frame, because it is in a 1996 model, toyota has refused to cover the cost of repairing it. There is no disputing that the failure of thousands of these engines as a result of a build-up of oil sludge can be attributable only to the fact that these engines are defective. As such, it is absolutely outrageous that toyota should take responsibility for the repair of some of these defective engines and not others. Thank you for your consideration.

Engine was running fine but was taking it in for 60k mile service.toyota dealership informed me of a bad oil sludge problem and estimated the repairs to be $4500.i took it to another mechanic and he said that there was a chance the engine has not been damaged, but only a chance.i let him perform the work of cleaning the oil pan and running a couple of oil changes to clean the sludge.the engine seemed to be running fine, but now (january 2003) i am getting a lot of smoke from the exhaust and they tell me that something must have been damaged but they can't tell without taking the engine apart.

After purchasing the car in march 2002, all oil changes were performed by me.the previous owner is a friend, and i know the car was maintained very well (appearance of the car also reflects this). In early may 2003, with my wife driving, the car threw #1 piston rod through the block. The engine still had ample oil, and only had 1500 miles after an oil change (i change the oil between 3-4000 miles, religously). This is not the type of engine failure to expect from a well maintained car, and after pulling the motor out, i noticed sludge all over the oil pan, valve covers, and on various engine components.

Original engine valve seals failed prematurely at 38k miles are were repaired by dealer under warranty. After another 40k miles the seals failed again. Dealer estimate for second prematuer valve seal repair is $1,000.

Sludge bill up in the enginge

My car has 135,000 miles on it and i was recently noticing that it would run hard and not switch gears as smoothly as it once had.i took it in to a toyota dealership to be evaluated and was told it had sludge in my engine probably due to infrequent oil changesi was then informed by theservice advisor that it needed a new engine and that it would cost approximately $5000-$6000.i informed the advisor that i always had my oil changed as per the owner?s manual, and i requested a written estimate as to the exact details that formed the basis for this price quote. I was ultimately denied that information.the gentleman told me he would call me back and/or fax it to me, after which i received nothing. I called again, got his supervisor instead of the service advisor, and he explained that engine sludge was the diagnosis and that i could not get a written estimate because the exact parts needed could not be determined. He stated he would have to have someone look further into the engine's problem to give me the estimate in writing.i asked why this hadn't been done prior to the completion of the diagnosis that i ordered, and he then began stammering and informed me that he didn't have my file in front of him and he could call me back after looking into it further. He then proceeded to ask me if i was really willing to pay that much for an engine?.when i asked what my other alternatives were, he offered to transfer me to a salesman!i never received any further phone calls.it has been my experience that if i am not willing to buy a new vehicle, the level of service i receive decreases dramatically.i have since taken my car to another independent shop to have it repaired, where i have been able to get an explanation both in writing and by the advisor in conversation as to what exactly is wrongand what exactly needs to be fixed.

Power steering failure on 1996 toyota camry.*mr while driving, the consumer loss control of the vehicle which was due to failure of the power steering..the timing belt and radiator hose were replaced.

Idle problem.taken to mechanic twice. Have replaced isc valve at least once a year since 1996 (twice in 1997 and 1998),in thelast year car has stalledwhen slowing down tocomplete engine shutdown in middle of roadway.engine takes a few tries to start again.

Upon starting vehicle at idle speed, the control valve sticks.this problem has been examined by dealership, and consumer has been told that this was normal.brakes experience grinding, squeaking, and vibration, rotors were warped and brake pads were glazed, brakes have been replaced, however problem continues.consumer states there is a suspension problem that is causing uneven tire wear.vehicle experiences several engine related problems, motor mounts were weak causing steering wheel vibration, 16 valve seals came apart due to being installed incorrectly, water pump leaked, timing belt failed, valve cover leaked, and cam seal was replaced.vehicle experienced transmission related problems, right outer axle boot was split and leaking grease, cv boots failed twice, shifter was hard and was making noises, dealer found the shifter lever plate was broken, transmission pan gasket was replaced, there was a clunking noise in the rear when going in reverse.the car jack was missing from the trunk and the antenna was inoperable.dealer found an open circuit in the battery.consumer noticed a rattling noise under the right front seat, dealer secured seat slide adjuster hook, temperature gauge did not work properly.overdrive light was inoperable.vehicle has experienced several fuel related problems, the egr valve assembly, egr modulator, idler control valve, idle air speed control, distributor o-ring, idler bearing, isc valve, and vacuum switching valve have all been replaced, blue smoke was coming out of the exhaust, dealer cleaned the throttle body, fuel injection, and recalibrated the fuel sensor, vehicle was running rough and stalling due to faulty egr vacuum modulator, dealer stated that the valve would default if there was too much oil added, the valve is too small so it will stick or become clogged up with carbon build up.

Several problems:faulty interior lighting,power antenna,brake noise,faulty power windows,main rear seal leak

I have always made regular oil changes, however, there is a definite oil sludge problem.didn't realize i had any recourse, but after other friends and family had complained about their camrys, i did some research on the web, and low and behold i came across the exact problem many toyota camrys have had.

The contact owns a 1996 toyota camry.the contact stated that nothing was wrong with her vehicle when she took it to have an oil change.the mechanic performing the oil change stated that the valve cover gasket needed to be replaced.the contact was also informed that there was motor failure, however she states otherwise.the motor was replaced and now the vehicle shakes when started, sounds like a tractor, and she smells diesel fumes in the passenger compartment.the purchase date and engine size were unknown.the current and failure mileages were 14,000.

Took camry to dealer (world toyota) discovered engine sludge problem, entire engine needs to be replaced, cannot re-build..notified customer service twice at toyota main office. Still have not resolved issue.

In approx june of 2002 my timing belt had to be replaced i now appear to have the oil gelling problem. Approx may 2003 i got out of the car to pump gas and the door will not open on the driver side. Approx august 2003 i began noticing if driving on the highway and i apply my brakes my whole car begins shaking.

I have engine gelling that has led to engine damage severe enough that i will either need a new short block or new engine (according to toyota).even with all of the work that i have already had on the vehicle, the engine is not in proper running order and will take thousands of dollars to remedy the issue.

The oil passage was too narrow, not letting oil into the crank shaft. This caused a rod to blow through the block, which caused the engine to fail and no longer to operate. Manufacturer was contacted by owner.engine was replaced with a used motor, timing belt, water pump and cap rotor wires. Manufacturer was notified but did not do anything.

Oil sludged at 77,000 miles after careful maintenance every 3,000 - 4,000 miles.engine flushed, valve cover gasket replaced, etc. (my cost) and continued maintenance, now 89,000 engine is blow while on trip with 80 year old mother 400 miles away from home

My 1996 camry was recently diagnosed with a major sludge problem requiring a new engine after only 80,000 miles.the car has the same 2.2l 4 cylinder engine that has been shown to be susceptible to this sludge problem, but toyota has refused to cover the cost of repairing my engine under the "special policy" repair program that they implemented to address the problem with this engine. Toyota did not dispute that it was the same engine that has experienced this problem - instead, the ridiculous and totally illogical reason they gave was that their "special policy" repair program was limited to the engines manufactured during an arbitrary time period and the engine in my camry fell outside that period by two months.in other words, they are fixing some of these defective engines but not others.

Reservoir bottle failed prematurely.bottle deteriated and leaks coolant onto the exhaust.

The engine does not heat sufficiently enough for the oil to clean the engine, manufacturer states that the sludge builds up in the engine due to the owners failure to get regualar oil changes or the owner using the wrong oil, consumer also states that the engine reaches 165 degrees around town when it should reach 195 degrees, consumer feels the problem is with the engine or the thermostat.

Car continutes to stall when at a stop and slowly idling repetitively. Creates dangerous situation for example when light turns green and car won't go!told idle air valve which i see in doing research seems to be a very common problem. Expensive repair. Perhaps a recall would be in order?

Air valve stuck causing vehicle to experience hard startup.

Daughter was driving her 1996 camry vehicle cut off while driving she coasted to the side of the road vehicle had to be towed.later learned from two different mechanics that engine had seized up for no apparent reason.

The vehicle experienced stalling/starting problems, which was caused by the egr valve, the fuel pressure regulator and the idle speed control valve, which were all replaced, the tires experienced uneven tire wear, the brakes failed, there were transmission, driveline and steering problems, the o-ring was replaced, and also the vehicle began to exhibit engine oil sludge.

Peter xu. *nlm

Replaced valve assembly 4 times (about 1/year).

When starting vehicle consumer has to step on gas pedal to start vehicle, which can cause internal damage tobearings.

Vehicle stalls momentarily then jerks forward, simultaneously the electrical system fails also.

Car stalls when starting cold. Idle speed control motor failed 4 times since purchased, almost once a year.

Sludge buildup in engine. Huge puffs of black smoke on starting.

Vehicle stalls in traffic when releasing gas pedal, this happens intermittently, contacted dealer and dealer stated that has to happen with them before vehicle can be checked.

While drivingvehicle stalls unexpectedly which may cause a crash.dealer cannot determine the cause. Please provide further information.

While driving at low speedvehicle would stall withoutprior warning.every 7-8 months it shows symptoms of instability during ignition.the rpm needle is also very unstable, especially on colder days. *ml

No cold/fast idle, car stalls when starting cold, idle erratic, goes low have to give it gas so it won't stall,3 trips to the dealer, each time dealer claimed car was repaired, problem still exists.toyotacustomer service has been no help, when contacing dealer for the fourth time, they said they'd get back to me. Engine oil leaks.

Cannot start engine and engine stallling due to idle spped control valve failure. Replaced isc valve 5 times since 1997.

I have seen on the internet that there have been numerous sludge engine with proper maintenance.toyota not backing the warranty.there is a big problem worldwide here.

Since the owner of the vehicle purchased the automobile, it has been pulsating/vibrating and hesitationwhen driving at higher speeds of 50 mph or more. The dealership has not been able to rectify the problem and consumer is unsatisfied with the performance of the vehicle.

The vehicle would not start without stepping on gas.

Whenever vehicle is either idling at a stop sign or light it would stall . Could be driving or turning a corner, vehicle would stall. Has happened 3 times. Had taken vehicle to dealer, mechanic could not locate cause of stalling.

While driving all power stopped, causing the driver to lose control.whennoticed the powerfailure tried to pull over, butdid not have control of the vehicle.

Problems with 1996 toyota camry.*mra few years after the vehicle was purchased, the consumer received a letter from toyota which stated it was necessary to have the vehicle timing belt replaced before 60,000 miles. The letter indicated that if the belt should malfunction, the vehicle could stop running. Since receiving the letter the consumer has received numerous advertisements regarding timing belt replacements from several local toyota dealerships.the consumer believed that a recall should be issued since toyota seemed to know there was a problem.

4 cylinder engine has starting problems when cold.it takes about three or four attempts to start (stalls a lot.)took vehicle to independent shop and was told it "probably" needed a timing belt.$1200 later and the car was good for about three months.the stalling problem is back.toyota said it cannot diagnose if they cannot duplicate problem.no codes set and it will not happen all the time.it is becoming fustrating though.

While driving at 35 mph vehicle lost brake and steering power. This occurred because the timing belt jumped, and the engine seized up because ofan oil jellying problem in the engine, per dealership.

1996 toyota camry developed problems stalling out in traffic and would buck like a bronco sometimes when driving (before stalling).dealership repairs cost me thousands of dollars. Very dangerous trying to get from here to there in this vehicle. Technicians kept taking the car back down to the engine block.sent a letter to toyota requesting they examine the invoices and repairs on a car with such low mileage.the sent a letter back.one line-"nothing in these invoices is under warranty" toyota was not interested infixing their mistakes and was not interested in learning from them.they were not interested in the safety of their customers.i knew at that time they were interested in growth and profit and let it be known to my friends and family that they should not buy toyota vehicles.

I have engine gelling that has led to engine damage severe enough that i will either need a new short block or new engine (according to toyota).even with all of the work that i have already had on the vehicle, the engine is not in proper running order and will take thousands of dollars to remedy the issue.

Fuel system: for about the last year and a half, certain mornings my car wouldn\\'t start by simply turning the ignition; i had to try it the \\"old fashioned\\" way and depress the gas pedal several times prior to turning the ignition key. Power window: the driver side power window motor sounds like it is dying; it takes quite a long time for the window to open and close. Other: the driver side interior door handle just broke off in my hand four (4) weeks ago!!! please bear in mind that this car has less than 29,000 miles and is very well maintained. Something which has occurred over the last year or so is quite dangerous and i need to point this out because i, nor anyone i have spoken to has ever heard of such a thing. The black windshield wiper arm assembly (which attaches the windshield wiper to the motor), for some unknown reason, the black paint has "worn away", exposing a bright silver metal, which reflects the sun directly into my eyes.it isquite dangerous. Since i don't do a lot of driving and always wear sunglasses on sunny days, they has helped me somewhat. However, recently i was driving on a cloudy day when the sun did in fact come out while i was without sunglasses. This proved to be most dangerous as i managed to avoid at least one accident due to this condition..

Unintended acceleration. I was turning a corner with my foot slightly on the brake. Suddenly the car lunged ahead at a fast speed without me having my foot on the gas pedal. Then jumped a curb and flattened a stop sign. The car was then heading towards a chain-link fence surrounding a multitude of high electrical towers. S10 appropriate handling re toyota safety recall for sudden acceleration. *tgwduring the months of may through july 2009, the consumer experienced problems with the brakes. Off and on, the brake pedal would go all the way to the floor. The vehicle would not stop, until the ignition was turned off. There was a strange odor coming from under the hood. However, the consumer was able to control the vehicle. It would generally happen when attempting a routine stop. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop, but they couldn't find anything wrong with the vehicle. Then on august 19, 2009, the vehicle suddenly accelerated; the brakes did not work and the vehicle was accelerating at a high rate of speed. As the consumer desperately shifted from neutral, second and third gear, she was unable to control the vehicle. She was able to weave in between cars as there was no place for her to pull over without crashing.she put on her hazard lights and beeped the horn to warn other drivers. She then swung into a wide parking lot entrance and slammed the gear into park and came to an abrupt halt.

I own a 1996 camry v6 le with 4-wheel disk brakes, and its current mileage is close to 90,000 miles.i have never worn out the front disk pads, while i have replaced the rear pads a few times.toyota says it's my gentle driving style that causes the unusual wear.i say that the proportioning valve set at the factory is mis-set, but it takes special tools to change and no one has these tools, so i can't prove my point.the big question to me:is my car stopping with two brakes or 4 brakes, as it was designed to do?

Brakes failed resulting in vehicle collision due to worn pads.

On the date of failure, during a routine visit to a toyota shop, my front brake pads were measured to be 8mm.since that time, and with toyota techs taking the measurements, their size has not reduced more than 0.5 mm. Since the rear pads seem to be wearing at a quicker-than-expected rate (they were 10mm new, 6mm on the above date and 3.5mm currently), i am concluding that the front brakes are not being employed properly, and this condition is putting me and my passengers at a great safety risk.i have taken the car to two toyota shops, and have had their district service manager involved, but toyota claims that the brakes are good because the line pressure readings are within specifications.i have not witnessed these tests nor have they told me what the readings should be, so i can't be sure that the tests were performed. They have not attempted a repair, and won't do so, because "there is nothing wrong" and if there was, it's not related to the warranty.they tell me that i just have very good brakes.they will not address how the brakes can be working, but not wearing.since i have had them inspect the brakes at least three times, i have paid for at least one inspection, they have told me to take my complaint to arbitration in accordance with the warranty.i do not understand how the toyota people can tell me that the front brakes are functioning correctly without showing any wear.they work by wearing. I believe that toyota should be required to repair or replace brake system components, under warranty, until my brakes are working properly, that is, the front brakes are doing most of the stoppin, as they should.

Front brake pads are prematurely wearing out, cause unknown.please give any further details.

My headlights are very dim, fortunately i have not crashed at this point but i have swerved and at near accident situations. I cannot see in the dark and i am forced to use my high beams. Around summer of 2010, i crashed m y car on a curve going to san francisco, ca on highway 85. As i was about to curve i slowly went from 65 mph to 25 mph or a bit lower to curve correctly. My steering wheel locked and i was not able to curve appropriately so my car continued straight and hit the side of the curve (luckily it was blocked by a steel highway fence). I replaced the drivers door and front bumper with an awful off color paint job. I did not make a police report and i did not contact my insurance.

All four interior door handles have failed making it impossible to exit the car without rolling down the windows.this is potentially dangerous in case of emergency.the left rear was first to fail at ~100k miles, the driver handle failed last at 139k miles.the local dealer offered a 10% discount on the repair, toyota of america customer satisfaction would offer anything better.

Center console had a slash in it.

The contact owns a 1996 toyota camry. The contact stated that both front driver and passenger side exterior door handles fractured into pieces. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the defect and they informed there was not a recall related to the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 166,000.

There is a life electrical current running through the door, and the owner suffered a real badshock, and now cannot not use his hand as well.

Support for roof rack is poorly installed.

1.) the black paint on the windshield wipers has worn off, exposing a bright metallic surface which reflects sunlight directly into the driver's eyes.; 2.) having only 37,000 miles on the vehicle, the exhuast system is in need of replacement!!!

Plastic panels and bumpers are cheaply molded/unsafe.

Molded bumpers.

Door seals failed.

Door will not close.

Dt*:the contact stated that there are triangular panels in each door that continue to detach from the vehicle.the contact expressed concern that since the panels are only held on by clips, the panels may detach and could become airborne inside the vehicle.the contact expressed that it would be better if they were screwed on.the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where bondo was applied to the front panel.when the vehicle was taken to the dealer, the dealer was unwilling to provide a remedy to the problem.updated 7/25/2006 - the door panel was replaced at the owners expense.

Under carriage of all four doors corroded. *dsh

Interior door handle on drivers side has broke off, making it impossible to rapidly exit the car. Passenger side has cracks and spring has worn through. This car is driven by 48 y/o women (my wife). My concern is that in an accident, there would be no way to get out without jamming a screwdriver in it, or rolling down the window and opening from the outside. The fact that both sides are failing leads me to believe that it is a manufacturing defect. Since the oneplastic piece costs $33.00, i will probably look for one in the junk yard, (which may also have prematurely aged). We live in florida so perhaps the u/v rays contribute to its demise. Nonetheless it is creating an unsafe situation and i couldn't possibly be the only one with this problem. Thank you.

Both passenger doors have a glue sticky substance that is leaking from the weather stripping inside the door.a dealership looked at it and told me it would cost $60.00 per door to fix.it seems to me that if this problem has happened often then there sound like a defective problem in the weather stripping or some other component within the door.the problem started occuring around nov. 1997 almost two years after the car was bought new.can you help me in this problem?thank you for your time.

Inside driver's sidedoor will not open . Dealer has been notified.

Passenger side exterior door handle cracked . Handle was rarely used.two months later, driver side exterior handle cracked.the part cost over $90, installation about $90.total for 2 handles almost $400.i'm the only driver of the car, 55 yrs old, take very good care of it.

Air leaks around both front doors.

While driving at approximately 40 mph felt a slight loss of power which was corrected byitself. A minute later, wheels locked up, and vehicle came to a stop. Transmission repair shop informed consumer thattransaxle cracked and it broke off where it was attached to the body.differential unit lockingwas torn up, andcenter support was wiped out. Transfer case also broke where it went onto the body. Dealer also stated that there was chunks of metal found from the differential drain plug.consumer had electrical problems with vehicle including starting problems.strut failure.key and lock problems.windshield wipers faulty.interior and brake light failure.

Both the left and right rear doors have a gluey sticky substance that is leaking from the door.it is leaking all around the inside frame and has melted the molding on the actual black car molding that is part of the car. If you touch any part of the door or frame, the black substance sticks to you.local dealer unwilling to fix it. Seems like a defect to me. Has been this way since march 2000.

Driver/passenger door handles came off the vehicle on two different occasions.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Dt*:the contact stated the outer driver side door handle detached.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the handle assembly was replaced.also, the two front and the rear passenger inner door handles fractured.these doors can only be opened with the outer handles.the vehicle has not been inspected by a mechanic for this problem.

Front driver and rear passengerplastic doors knobhandle broke.passenger side won't open from outside, and driver's side won't open from inside.

I am interested in any recalls issued for this make/year/model

I had driven the car for about 15 minutes when the gas pedal seemed to be sucked to the floor.the car suddenly accelerated to 50 and i could barely get it to stop.i had it towed to a repair shop; but they could not find anything wrong.i'm not crazy.this is the 2nd time in 2 weeks that this has happened.what is wrong?

I own a 1996 toyota camry that has the oil sludge problem that toyota has admitted to for the 1997-2001 cars.my local toyota dealership examined and admitted my car has the sludge/gel problem but says this year of manufacture is not part of the campaign to fix this problem and therefor will not be responsible for the defective engine and its subsequent repairs.toyota wants to charge me $800 to further diagnose the "extent of damage". In my research online, i have found other owners of 1996 toyotas that are experiencing the same problems with their engines and i feel toyota is again trying to minimize their responsibility to owners of vehicles with the affected engines.

On september 19, 2014, when my wife was driving a 96 toyota camry car home, all of the sudden, the vehicle automatically accelerated, she hit the brake hard but the vehicle still went 40 mph.she almost hit several vehicles before she managed to shift it to the parking mode and stop the vehicle in the up-slope driveway.at this time, the vehicle was still roaring and smoke came out and she turned off the engine.

Vehicle-toyota-camry-1996 and 1993 problem:cruise controlwe own 1996, my mom owns 1993, both have the following problem.neither of us have been able to afford to have repairs done, so we do not know the cause/remedy.we have instead stopped using.intermittently, repeatedly, without any warning, cruise control suddenly stops working.a sudden extreme decrease in speed occurs due to failure.switches and lights indicate it is still on and working properly.this is extremely dangerous on freeways at high rates of speed particularly because that is also when normal use of cruise control is most likely/most often being used.this poses an enormously high risk of being hit from the rear or the car following to swerve and it either hitting, or being hit by, another vehicle.huge possibility of multiple vehicle pile up.because cruise control is almost always being used when it the most dangerous times for it to fail, the urgency of this problem can not be over emphasized.more likely to fail on inclines makes it even more dangerous as the rate of speed drops even faster.starts very intermittently and far between, as time goes on occurs more and more often.eventually found that it occurs more often on incline, but not always, with a less and less incline as time goes on.happened on crowded freeway at high rate of speed with big rig following close behind.almost hit by it!happened at high speed on a crowded freeway, other vehicles close all around, barely avoided nightmare pile up! i can not over emphasize how dangerous this problem is!with both ours and mom's camry having the exact problem, there may very well indicate pattern/problem.

Subsequent attempts to use the cruise control got the same result, continuous increase of speed until turned off. The symptoms are exactly the same as in the recall. Very dangerous situation, as people may think they are under cruise and not realize they are accelerating.

Engine accelerated while pulling into the garage.attempted to brake... Car did not stop. Ran into the house.had to turn off ignition to stop engine acceleration.

Our 1996 camry, which has recently been safety checked and had new tires put on, began to accelerate out of control.we were able to stop it by using the brakes, the emergency brake and had to put car in neutral.no accident occurring, but it was a very dangerous situation.our mechanic was unable to find anything wrong with the car.since this acceleration problem has been in the press with other toyota's we decided to report this same experience.i realize the car is older, but it otherwise functions well.thank you.

#1 - discovered wind noise from an incomplete seal in right rear quarter glass of vehicle, one month after purchase. Took vehicle into del toyota(dealer), who said they resealed the window. Noise from said window continued, at higher speeds above 30mph.i took vehicle back into dealer one month later. The contact owns a 1996 toyota camry. The contact states that while driving at 65 mph when placing her foot on the brake and slowing down, the vehicle accelerated on its own. By putting extreme pressure on the brake, she was able to pull over and turned off the vehicle. The contact then turned the vehicleon and the vehicle resumed normal operation. This has occurred only once. The vehicle was then taken in to the dealer and they stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and that her vehicle was not involved in the recent recall for toyota. There have been no repairs done to the vehicle . The current mileage is 101046.updated 03/09/10. *ljupdated 06/14/10.

1996 camry was stopped at a red light then surged forward into the intersection where it was struck by a motorcycle and pick-up truck.camry and motorcycle both totaled.airbags in camry didn't deploy on impact but had a delay.police involved with case.camry driver cited for failure to yield to a red light which driver was stopped at initially.no further investigation.with toyota in the news, found reports of other 1996 camry's with sudden acceleration so filed this complaint.family member was owner and driver of camry.motorcycle driver sustained injuries that resulted in death 5 years later.updated 05/10/10 updated 07/08/10.

Driving various speeds & going down hill w/foot on brakes, vehicle would suddenly surge. Computer sensors can not tell if accelerator is on/off. Took to dealer & could not find problem 1st time; mechanic took for test drive & said there was a problem. Owner has arbitration papers.

Idler misadjusted.

96 toyota camry with 185k miles accelerated to a high speed for unknown reasons. Trying to halt the car, a landscaping tree was hit, the wheel blew out, eventually stopping the car. Vehicle did not respond to gear, pedal or shut off of vehicle from commands given. Instead, after hitting landscaping tree runover, near miss pedestrians, tire blowout, then halted. Police tested (on police report verified) turn on of vehicle in which car resumed high speed revving.

Vehicle accumulated carbon deposits . The engine is taking a longer time to warm up. Dealer replaced the iac valve.

We had a situation described below. I shall be grateful if you could shed some light on it. This incident involves toyota camry 1996.it is a critical situation. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.[xxx]descriptionof the accident: monday (4/25/2011) was the trash collection day at our development. We have two cars: camry and lexus. We had to pull one car out to bring the trash can in. It was approximately around 6 p.m. My wifevolunteered to pull the car out, so that i could bring the trash can in. My wife pulled the car out on the driveway and parked, still herfoot was on the brake. As she was bringing the gear to drive, as soon as it reached the reverse gear, the car speeded backward in an uncontrollable speed and with in seconds it hit and shatteredour neighbor?s mail box and its metal post. The car stopped. I was standing and wasshocked to see what was happening. She thoughtthat she was in our neighbor?s lawn, andwanted to bring the car to the side of the road. As soon as she brought the gear to the drive, it again raced forward in high uncontrollable speed and hit our brick wall of our house and was pinned down and stopped.the car was totaled, wrecking thefront and the back with two impacts. Both airbags were deployed. She had her seat belt on. These two devices probably saved her life.she was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Police arrived and accompanied us to the hospital. We spent four to five hours in the hospital. Report enclosed.she has seen her personal physician. She has seen orthopedic surgeon. She is also going to physical therapy. I am the owner of the 96 toyota camry identified by the vin number provided.i have experienced an abnormal speeding of my car as explained below:this past friday, jan 13th about 6:30 pm central time, i was traveling on i-65 south (from birmingham, alabama to hoover, alabama). About 15 to 20 minutes on the road, when i was just about to reach my destination, my vehicle started accelerating abruptly even when the foot was off the pedal. I stepped on the brakes but the engine kept revving upwards of 3000 rpm. In great distress, praying to jesus, i kept hardly pressing the brakes and was able to shift gear to neutral. It started reviving up higher in neutral. Shifted to park and stopped the engine. It seems, there is something wrong with the design of throttle or the parts involved in the vehicle's speed control system. I towed the vehicle to my place. Please investigate this issue and advice me if i have to reach out to the manufacturer for a car repair or replacement.

The contact owns a 1996 toyota camry. The contact was driving 45 mph when the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The brake was depressed and the gear was placed in neutral but the engine rpms increased to 5000. The contact noticed that the accelerator pedal did not return to idle position and remains stuck in open throttle. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 185,257.

-the contact owns a 1996 toyota camry. The contact was driving approximately 45 mph. When pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal the vehicle surged forward repeatedly. The brakes were engaged and the vehicle slowed down. The vehicle had not ben repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 50,000. The current mileage was 62,000. The vin was unavailable

Vehicle accelerated without warning. When applyingbrakes vehicle would not stop . Consumer had to shift into neutral 3 itmes, and once had toshift into neutral and turn off engine. Toyota dealer could not determine cause. Private mechanic replaced throttle.

Cruise control would not cancel when brake was applied.dealer advised it was the brake switch which controled brake lights & cruise control was bad, paid dealer to replace but concerned about the possibility that others have experienced or could experience an accident due to this defect.

My 1996 toyota camry experienced unintended acceleration and became difficult to control on april 12, 2010. While driving home from work (a distance of 26 miles) i entered the freeway and gave my car gas to move into the second from the left hand lane. After getting into the proper lane, the car behaved inthe same way as a car after pressing the resume button, after disabling cruise control. This happened at 4:30p during the start of rush hour traffic. The only way i could keep from hitting another vehicle was to floor the brake. At one point the car raced to speeds of 65-75 mph. I could tell that at the 75 mph range that i was very likely to hit the car in front of me. To prevent this i briefly placed the car in neutral, then switched it into reverse twice in quick succession. The camry made a horrible noise, but did slow down after that. The brakes seemed to be unable to engage properly from that point, possibly due to excessive use. I was able to successfully drive to the dealership after that. The dealer examined the car, test drove it and stated that they could find no problem with the car.statement from spouse:as a recently retired engineer from a large research laboratory, i'd like to add my comments:i spent 33 years designing laboratory experiments to run safely and reliably.over those years, i formed the opinion that lab equipment should be designed so that malfunctions cause only minor problems, not major ones.since toyota's problems with unintended acceleration seem to affect vehicles of various ages and designs, i suspect the root cause is not a specific piece of hardware, but rather a failure to design their equipment so that malfunctions cause only minor problems, not major ones.perhaps there are components of their vehicles that fail in a way that gives the vehicle full power, whereas a safer failure mode would be have no power.

On several occasions the vehicle failed to respond when the accelerator pedal was depressed.

I just recently bought a 1996 toyota camry, the car runs great besides the fact that it sometimes starts to self accelerate.the pedal gets stuck in press mode and the car just picks up incredible sudden speed.in prior occasions i have suddenly just put the car in neutral and then the engine revs up to 6500 rpm.i've also noticed that this problem occurs when the outside temperatures are really hot.on certain occasions i have came very close in becoming involved with an accident. In these scenarios i have even put the car in neutral and shutting it down.i have even opened the hood many of times and have seen that the cars accelerator wire is fully clinched to the max.this has been a very big safety concern for me and has endangered my life many of times.i have contacted a local toyota dealer about this problem, they said they really don't know anything regarding a 1996 camry and accelerator problems.this is indeed a very big issue and it is very apparent that this problem of accelerators do exist from long time before and not just in the recent camry's. I do not want to get involved in any sort of accident as i've come very very close.

I entered the freeway on-ramp and accelerated. The car continued to accelerate even after i took my foot off the gas pedal. I kicked the pedal down a couple times to get it unstuck. Instead of coming unstuck, it stuck all the way to the floor. (the engine accelerated to the maximum amount. I think the actual pedal came back up to the idle position.) the brakes slowed the car some when i pushed on the pedal with both feet with my hands on the steering wheel and standing up so all my weight and strength was on the brake. The brakes smelled of burning and i thought for a second that maybe i was getting it under control. However, when i looked at the speedometer, it read 95 and the brakes were smoking and smelling quite strong. I put the car into neutral and continued to push hard on the brake. It slowed down to maybe to 65 or so. By then the engine was running so fast i thought it would blow up and it was night on a relatively deserted freeway so i put it back into gear and continued this pattern for approximately 8 miles - speeding up to way past 95, riding the brakes until they smoked and smelled too much (i thought they would become useless if i let them burn up) putting it into neutral and slowing down for as long as i thought was ok before blowing the engine, repeat, etc.. Just prior to my exit, the unintended acceleration stopped and i got off onto the side streets. When i accelerated after a stop sign, the accelerator stuck but i immediately put it into neutral and then shut the key off, stopping the engine. It did this two more times. The repair shop cleaned the throttle body and it has not happened again. I was in the army infantry during the 60's but had not had a flashback for a very long time. I had flashbacks of this experience several times when entering a freeway entrance ramp. It was a most terrifying experience and researchhas shown that our ability to respond logically is greatly diminished under that high stress.

This event occurred twice: i was driving at approximately 30-40 mph w/out the cruise control engaged. When i took my foot of the gas pedal to apply the brakes the vehicle accelerated. I had to depress the brake pedal as hard as i could to stop the vehicle. In the second incident i had to take the car out of gear which caused the rpm to jump significantly. Once the car was turned off and restarted the car functioned normally. I took the vehicle to the dealer who could not find any open recalls nor could the dealer identify any problems with the vehicle. I also took the vehicle to a mechanic who was unable to identify any problems.

I experienced 3 or 4 sudden acceleration incidents with my 1996 toyota camry during the first 5 years of ownership.no accidents resulted.i can't give the exact dates (ignore the incident date i entered below; i just put a date in at random since it's a required entry).it's been over a year since the last one.all occurred as i started to brake in a very slow-moving situation - two definitely happening while parking, coming to a stop before the incident.however, when touching the brake pedal to reverse direction or stop, there was a confusing surge as my instinct was to question whether i had touched the accelerator rather than brake and thus take off my foot - the worst action.in all cases, i had enough time to realize that i did have my foot on the brake and pushed down forcefully which stopped the acceleration. I asked my mechanic to check this out, but unless he could replicate the situation, no diagnosis was possible.given the randomness of these occurences, the probablility of a replication is pretty close to zero.the one common thread in these incidents:they occurred following a long road trip during which i was using cruise control for extended periods, though in none of the incidents, was the cruise control on.i am sending this now as i learned you are looking into such incidents and thought you would want to build a record.ibelieve there are far more incidents like this that never get reported because they end safely; a solicitation of such incidents from those like myself who simply remain puzzled over them would yield a much larger data base.thank you.

Without any warning the accelerator goes to the floor and stays there for a minute before it self corrects the situation. All control of the car is lost.

The contact owned a 1996 toyota camry. While traveling at speeds of 40 mph depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle would not stop and proceeded to abnormally accelerate. She was able to finally stop the vehicle and upon further inspection, observed that the accelerator pedal had collapsed in the open throttle position. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who released the wedged accelerator cable.on a separate occasion, while depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle abnormally accelerated a second time. She was able to bring the vehicle to a stop and drive onto the emergency lane without incident. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where repairs were made for the previous failure. The contact experienced the unintended acceleration failure one additional time while traveling in snowy weather conditions. The contact stated that she did not feel safe in the vehicle and had a relative follow her home in case of additional failures.the approximate failure mileage was 102,000 and the current mileage was 104,000.

Idle control valve failed three times resulting in stalling, difficulty starting and erratic idle speed.

In hot weather after about 100 or 200 miles the cruise control on our 1996 toyota camry would fail and would cause the vehicle to speed up until the cruise was turned off. Other times the cruise would just fail and drop out unexpectedly.either event could be hazardous so we stopped using the cruise control. We went to the toyota dealer twice when this first happened while the vehicle was still under warranty and they refused to do anything about it because we were unable to demonstrate the problem immediately. Today we did a recall search on the internet about this problem and found the problem did exist on most 1996 camry but our vin number did not fit their listing. Vin# [xxx]today we went back to the toyota dealer where we bought the car new on 3/14/1996, but they would do nothing for us. The dealer is rinke toyota 25420 vandyke centerline, mi 48015586-758-2000. We also called the toyota customer service 800 number before contacting you but they were not helpful. Please help us resolve this safety issue.thank you.[xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Vehicle did not hold idle when started.isc motor has been replaced 3 times in 2.5 years.each replacement lasted 1 or 2 months more than the length of warranty.

Idle speed control valve failed.

Idle air control valve keeps clogging up. The dealer has replaced it twice, and problem has reoccurred. Consumer states that vehicle keeps stalling, and gas pedal has to be pushed to start the vehicle.*yd

Idle speed control valve failed.

Idle speed control valve has a defect, causes vehicle to idle low, and will eventually stop engine from starting if this continues. Contacted maufacturer/dealer. They wer eaware ofdefect, but not willing to do anything.

Upon starting vehicle and without any indication, vehicle would stall. Dealer was contacted and noticed idle speed control valve needed to be replaced..

Idle motor failure.

1. Idle speed control valve failed causing cold start problem ( very low rpm or engine dies). Toyota of cerritos claimed there is a defect on the valve it self. Toyota keep suppling them with old/defective valve for service. Per service manager, if toyota keeps doing this, there is nothing they can do to fix this problem, it will happen again. Toyota customer service is not aware of such a problem. 2. Tires were cupped at 20000 miles under normal surface street and freeway driving. Goodyear claimed its not under warranty. ( dot number: m6rw tire size: p195/70r14 )

Idle speed control valve malfunctioned, causing vehicle to stall also, egr valve failed twice.

Vehicle experienced several erratic surges while in stop and go traffic which caused sudden acceleration, and resulted in a rear end collision. There wereminor damages to vehicle, and no reported injuries. Vehicle taken to dealer for inspection, and nothing could be found.

Power window failed.

Several problems:faulty interior lighting,power antenna,brake noise,faulty power windows,main rear seal leak

Power window motor failed.

Main window switch on the driver's side would latch to lower the window then would not unlatch to raise the window even after turning the car off and opening the door.dealer said it would cost $300+ to replace the main window control board.several months later the right side passenger switch quit and neither side (right or left) switch would work.cannot lower window at all and feel this is a safety hazard if the window had to be opened in an emergency.

The engine just dies.usually at a stop or slow down.probably 1x/month for the last 6 months.previously it just happened a couple of times last year.the frequency seems to be increasing.so far it has happened only with city driving.i do 90% city driving, but am becoming nervous about taking the car out on the freeway.our mechanic cannot find any history of these stalls on the car's computer.i have had problems with my isc valve ever since i've had the car. We need to replace the isc valve every year.toyota has paid for it, but it is annoying not to have this problem solved.

Outside side view mirror failed.

Driver's side view mirror failed.

Interior rear view mirror was detached by deploying air bags and hit a rear seat passenger causing head injuries.

Sunroof failed.qcaw

A thin layer of ice had formed on my car's rear windshield overnight.i tried to clear it by using my rear defost.i drove for about 20 minutes and while stopped at the red light i heard a loud noise, as a ballon would explode, came from the back of my car and i saw a crack at the corner of my back windshield.i drove for another 1/2 miles and arrived at my destination.this is when the rear windshield crumbled to pieces.i had my baby in the back seat rear facing.fortunately, i had covered her with a blanket, which shielded her from the shattered glass.

Windshield 'wind noise'.

Windshield loose/rattles.

Rear windshield wipers broke.

While driving, the driver felt vibration throughout the vehicle.thedriver took the vehicle to the dealer for analysis.the mechanic noticed that boot turned and the boot feed greased, this caused the wheel (provide details).
