My airbag light is on for no reason whatsoever. It was supposed to be taken care of in a previous recall i believe but with this update on other vehicles effected i 100 percent sure my 06 avalon xls and maybe others are having airbag issues. The seats (leather) have been effected by the seat warmers over heating

My dashboard has a tear over the airbag on the front passenger side. I took it to the toyota dealership on franklin st. In hempstead before the covid 19 virus shut down. I was informed that since there's no recall on my vehicle, i would have to pay out of pocket to change the dashboard cover. I think it's a safety issue since this happened through no fault of my own. The vehicle is in mint condition and runs like new because i take care of my cars. Please help

Driving east on coldspring lane- was crossing charles st at the intersection when other driver going west on coldspring lane attempted to make a left turn onto charles st going southi had no time to hit the brakes i ran into his side of the car passenger side-my air bags did not deployed. Thefront of the car was total destroyed. My wife and i sustained injuries.

My car has always been kept in the garage, except for being at work.i have cracks all over the passengers side airbags.i was in the hospital getting a lung transplant when the extended service letter came out offering to replace it.i didn't drive for two yearsbecause of illness.when i went to the toyota dealer he said i missed the deadline by a week.he said he had the parts and would like to do it but would need an ok from toyota corporate .i called toyota and they said there is nothing they can do.if there is a class action lawsuit on this i would like to join'..i did nothing to cause this, it is a manufacturer defect and a safety hazard.i f the airbags deploy, it could kill someone

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact was driving 60 mph when the contact crashed into another vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy and the seat belt shoulder harness failed to restraint the contact. The contact sustained injuries to the shoulder. The vehicle was taken to a dealer but the manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure and the current mileages was 121,000. The vin was not available.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v043000 (air bags) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

My dashboard warning light for my airbag has become illuminated all of the time.i am the original owner of this car, 161,000 miles on odometer.dealer wants $75 to "check out" the warning light.i don't believe i should be charged any amount to check the vehicle's safety system. I am concerned that i have a defective airbag system, possibly manufactured by takata.i do live in a humid environment in eastern kansas.

The contact owned a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving approximately 55 mph, the contact's vehicle was cut off by another vehicle. As a result, the contact's vehicle became lodged underneath the other vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The contact sustained injuries to the right shoulder and neck, which required medical attention. The vehicle was destroyed, towed to a towing facility, and later towed to the contact's residence. A local dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vin and failure mileage were unknown.

Passenger airbag cover is cracking which may produce sharp or pointed projectiles in the event of activation.cover appears to be bowing out towards passenger, pictures available.vehicle has not been in accident.

Was told air bags may contain metal

The day after my car had 3 recalls corrected, i was driving around 20 mph when the car started to take off.i put the brake on real hard and got it stopped at about 35 mph.needless to say my passenger and i were scared to death.

I am in shock given the today?s news. I was in an accident on 12/01/08 in my 2006 toyota avalon. I could not stop the car and ran into the t-bar of a box truck in front of me. My car was totaled. After the accident we called the toyota experience center, they created a claim #1001145755 and erika with toyota said they would be in contact with us. We next heard from a [xxx] with toyota who then told us to mail our complaint to toyota motor sales claims department in torrance, ca. We mailed of the necessary documentation from the accident and never heard back from them. We called back on many occasions all to be never answered or given a run around, once told they were looking into it. Nothing ever came of it all. We didn't know what to so we gave up, at the time we could not afford a lawyer. So today?s news was frustrating. Months prior to my accident we took the avalon into dch toyota of simi valley to check out acceleration problems. They said nothing was wrong with it and told me i needed a transmission fluid exchange and to have the power steering fluid flushed.we were told nothing was wrong; clearly there was. I am just curios what actions we take now. I am so frustrated and disappointed. Can you please advise me on what to do?information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving less than 5 mph to pull into an underground garage area, the accelerator pedal became stuck and failed to release. The brake pedal was applied with force, but the vehicle lunged forward and crashed into the garage door. Upon impact, a yellow piece associated with the front passenger side air bag fractured. None of the air bags deployed. The driver sustained injuries to the head and neck and sustained bodily scratches and bruising, which did not require medical attention. The insurance company was notified of the failure and planned to investigate the cause of the air bag and acceleration failures. A dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 10v017000 (vehicle speed control) and 09v388000 (vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The vehicle was still at the contact's residence. The approximate failure mileage was 216,000.

Dashboard on this vehicle cracked in 2010. In subsequent years, several places cracked and became sticky to the touch where air bags deploy. Concerned that airbag deployment would be a problem with pieces of dashboard being thrown. Brought to dealers attention. Advised out of warranty so nothing could be done. Because of the potential safety problem - replaced the dashboard at a personal cost of $2000. This was a defective part as shown on the thousands of owners who had the same issue. Toyota should reimburse me for cost to replace this safety issue defect.

The contact owned a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving approximately 25 mph, a vehicle merged into the contact's lane and struck the front driver side of the contact's vehicle. The frontal driver and feet air bags deployed with gases and metal fragments, which injured the driver. A police report was filed. The fire department was also present. The contact was transported to the hospital by ambulance and diagnosed with a dislocated vertebrae, facial injuries, chest injuries due to the seat belts, and injuries to the shin because of the feet air bags. The contact required surgery to the damaged vertebrae and her hearing was lost permanently. The dealer (sheehy toyota of stafford, 95 garrisonville rd, stafford, virginia, (540) 720-4700) was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to an unknown impound lot. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.*dt

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 50 mph, the tire on the front driver side blew out, causing the vehicle to veer into a cotton field. The vehicle flipped four times and landed on the passenger side. The contact stated that the air bags had not deployed. A police report was filed. The contact sustained injuries to the neck, back, and leg. The passenger sustained injuries to the right ear that detached from the head, injuries to the neck, and a concussion. Both occupants required medical attention. The vehicle was towed to a salvage lot awaiting an insurance appraisal. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 12,000.

Noticed that the dashboard section air bag (console) on passenger side has started "cracking".when first noticed it was approximate one inch in length, & is progressing currently approximate 2" inches in length. Call toyota to inform and suggested i take to dealership where i service my vehicle. Upon doing so the dealership stated it was ok and wouldn't diminish the integrity of the airbags going off.i still feel this is a safety issue with the console proceeding to crack, and believe once summer heat continues to hit dashboard it will progress to crack further.wife ( passenger) is quite concerned since she notices the crack getting longer.we garage our car, but if car was parked out in sun it could possibly get worse.

The toyota avalon limited was hit broadsided at around 50 mph, or more on the driver side and the side airbags did not inflate.the driver had to be cut out of the car and the back passenger received some whiplash, and there was some damage to the back door. The whole dashboard received damage and buckled. The front passenger had severe trauma to her left leg. The car is totaled.i bought this car new in 10/2005.a recall of 133 cars were made around 3/2006.i was not the one notified and my air bags did not inflate and that was one of the reasons i bought this car.why wasn't my car notified?i really don't know if the front airbags would have worked if we were in a frontend collision.

On sunday, september 6, 2009, my mother was driving my 2006 toyota avalon when she was involved in a crash due to an acceleration problem with the vehicle.she was also involved in a crash in my garage when the floor mat got stuck on the accelerator and cause her to run into the wall of the garage.i also have experienced several instances of acceleration after taking my foot off the gas pedal when attempting to brake which caused me to have to slam on the brakes to stop the vehicle.the insurance company deemed the car a total loss and it was only when i received the settlement papers from the insurance company did i find out there were problems with the airbags as toyota never sent me any correspondence regarding the problem with the airbags, the floor mats or the accelerator.

Vehicle dashboard cracked in several places where air bags deploy. Concerned this is a safety issue as air bag will/will not deploy as intended. Many toyota avalon owners have complained on the internet with the same problem. Contacted toyota corporate and local dealer who advised not a warranty item or subject to recall.

I had a collision with another vehicle and my car was totaled by the insurance company as there was major front end damage and no air bags deployed.the first reaction ofthree law enforcement officers, body shop owner, and insurance adjuster was the same, "i can't believe the air bags didn't deploy."this is not a play for money, but a request for help, if there isa product problem.i was not injured because i was wearing my seat belt and it worked. The car is still available for inspection but will be turned over to hartford insurance as early as today.

I think i experienced a surge in my 2006 toyota avalon.i was not sure but people observing that did not stay and wait for police said my car raced forward after stopped at a light.i ended up steering to the right and hit a tree rather than the car ahead or pedestrians.when the police and tow truck arrived they indicated that my airbag should have gone off, but it did not.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 40 mph, the vehicle struck a deer and the air bags did not deploy.the vehicle was not taken in for service, and the manufacturer was notified.

My 2006 toyota avalonxl has been giving problems shortly after my purchase. The first was the breaking of an oil hose followed by stalling on the freeway. I have taken it to the dealership for diagnosis and for over a week they have not been able to tell me anything.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon xls. The contact noticed that whether she was driving the vehicle or it was in park, the seats would move, the doors would lock and unlock and radio would suddenly turn on; she believed these issues to be caused by electrical failures. Car did not start for several tries.on about the 5th try, the moment i shifted into reverse, the throttle stuck and the car hurtled out of the garage.it veered to the left(as you face the garage) immediately after clearing the garage, cut under the branches of a big spruce tree on the corner of my neighbor's lot, crossed his driveway, across a small drainage ditch and slammed into the trunk of a huge spruce tree.car stopped then, with extensive damage to rear, and engine died.car was drivable and i drove it to the dealer, who chose to not examine anything.during the event, i had my foot on the brake pedal but the anti-lock brakes kept it from locking the wheels and i tried to kill the engine by hitting the start button (there is no key on this model car).that did not work and i hit the tree before i could think of anything else to do.i was not hurt.

Vehicle was stopped on an uphill grade. When i began to accelerate on the grade the car would move a about three feet into the intersection but would not go further. A loud rumbling sound and the car vibrated but would not move.. Another car to my right had to stop to avoid hittingme. T think the traction control is designed poorly as i have read similar complaints online.

I own a 2006 toyota avalon..light came on today (vsc) did not know what it was until driving on the freeway going 65 mph and all of a sudden my vehicle lost power and engine still idling...pulled to the side of the road, very dangerous, no shoulder. I shut the car down and restarted it...gave it a little gas and thought i could exit the freeway..as i gave it gas trying to merge back into the slow lane with 65mph traffic..it nearly caused a rear in collision with another vehicle.. My car cut out and then it went up to 50mph (cutting out the entire time)..enough to get me off the freeway. Taking it to the dealer in the morning.whatever the problem with the vsc...will be determined in the morning at the toyota dealer.very dangerous.

The traction control system in our 2006 toyota avalon will not allow the car to drive in snow.once a wheel starts to slip the brake is applied and the car will not move.as we live in colorado this is a serious problem.

Sept. 27, 2009, i was driving my 2006toyota avalon into my garage at a slow speed.when i hit the brake, the car accelerated causing me to drive into the workbench, braking it and some wallboardbehind it as well as damaging the car before the car finally came to a stop.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while driving approximately 10 mph on a snow packed incline, the traction control system (tcs) activated voluntary.there was no response when the accelerator pedal was depressed.the failure occurs whenever the vehicle is proceeding up an incline on snow cover road surfaces.the authorized dealer stated that the traction control system was a manufacturer design, however, some vehicles are equipped with a mechanism that disengages the tcs.the failure mileage was 68,000 and current mileage was 69,000.updated 2/23/09 when the consumer attempted to drive up a slight incline in snow, the drive wheel slipped which engage the tcs. The drive wheel was unable to regain traction which would have disengaged the tcs. The vehicle eventually came to a stop sliding backwards.there was no way to manualy disengage the tcs. If the tcs could be disengaged the vehicle could be handled more easily. Updated 02/27/09.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated the electronic stability control goes out on hills and leaves the vehicle stranded. The contact stated it shuts the vehicle down and they have to back down and avoid hills when driving the vehicle. The contact states this only happens when the vehicle has to be stopped when going up a hill. The engine will run fine when placed in neutral or reverse, but the engine shuts down when in drive. The dealer stated this is a feature of the vehicle and there is no repair for the failure. The failure mileage was 1,200 and the current mileage was 25,900.the consumer stated he was unable to navigate slippery roads. When the system detected slippage, he lost acceleration and was not able to move.updated evoq 06/16/11

Problems with 20006 toyota avalon: on numerous occasions, the car has accelerated spontaneously and the brakes have not stopped the carwhen the brake pedal was depressed.luckily, no accidents yet.recent problems with engine malfunction and vehicle stability control malfunction.toyota dealer denied any problems, except for "spark plugs" and oil line defect.dealer denied car was on recall list.complained that i was never notified about the mat, gas pedal or other recall.dealer denied that car was on recall list.dealer charged$1,100.00 (4 tires included) for work .ongoing problem since car was purchased:gas cap is difficult to replace after fill-up.check engine light comes on if cap is not "clicked" several times.car must be taken to dealer to be turned off.it will not go off even if gas cap is on properly.dealer charged $135.00 for each time.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while attempting to accelerate from a stop, the tire would spin and the brakes would automatically apply. The contact could not feel the vehicle spin, but the warning indicator light illuminated to indicate that the traction control was applied.the dealer stated that the function was normal and the traction control could not be deactivated.the design flaw occurred only in the snow.the vehicle mileage was 18,000 and current mileage is 20,000.updated 03/13/08.*lj

When accelerating from a stop the vehicle will sometimes move about 10 feet and then hesitate for about 1 to 2 seconds. It will then accelerate normally. When driving in heavy conditions at speeds under 35 the car hesistates badly when you try to accelerate and then "jumps" forward. Same thing happens on the downside to the point that it feels like its going to stall. The service advisor also said there had been other complaints about this condition. This condition is dangerous and not normal.

At 45,000 miles, coil failed. At 45,100 miles, a second coil failed.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving 60 mph and attempting to accelerate, an abnormal sound emitted under the front end of the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the vehicle failed to accelerate and began to shake violently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the motor mount boat detached and fractured the engine's axle. The technician stated that the motor mount boat needed to be removed from the engine and the engine's axles needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 125,000.

2006 toyota avalon.consumer writes in regards to vvt-i oil hose rupture and seized engine failure.

Started car and smoke began pouring from the exhaust while stationary.checked oil level and found to be within normal range.when driving, car was sluggish under acceleration with intermittent smoke.took car to san marcos toyota and they found the engine to be sludged and require an overhaul of the engine ($4900) or replacement of the engine ($6900).the vehicle had only 140,000 miles. We ended up having an independent mechanic overhaul/cleanup the top side of engine for $4000.i have the estimates and receipts for the work if needed.i have researched on-line and found many other avalon owners who have had the same problem.i am filing this complaint in hope that toyota will acknowledge the poor engineering of this v6 engine and issue a recall and reimburse their customers who have experience this engine failure.

Head gasket leaks both sides. Under repair. Poor design or manufacturing. Should not have occurred at this mileage level. My repair service indicated that this has happened on several toyota products. Concern foraccident potential should head gasket blow at high speed in heavy traffic where conditions do not allow for a safe exit from travel lanes to shoulder.note: vehicle registered under my wife maria's name.

This cars engine had to be pulled out for head gaskets. I was charged 4000.00 when it was covered under the warranty. A year later they gave me the money back. Then i had external high pressure oil lines replaced and the gaskets several times. This car is one of the worst cars i have ever owned.i take care of my cars to the exstreme.i am a diesel specialist for the state.i finally had to get rid of the car.i wrote toyota a letter and got absolutely no sympathy or understanding whatsoever.

On june 7, 2019, i was driving the avalon, the engine suddenly stopped while i was driving the vehicle on city street. With the loss of power steering and brakes, i was traumatized and did my best to guide the vehicle to side of the road.i had the vehicle towed home and hooked up to a code reader, which yielded codes p0345, p0300, p0302, p0304, p0306. We did further diagnostics and discovered the 3 bolts that hold the variable-valve timing (vvt) gear to the intake camshaft came loose, these bolts are supposed to be temper-resistant and never be removed which led me to believe the result of engine dying is caused by serious manufacturing and design defects. Please refer to attached three pictures showing 3 bolts laying next to vvt gear, vvt gear loosely held on and the vibration of bolt left cutting mark on the gear, and all intake cam rockers falling out.i did more research and concluded the root cause of engine stopped while the vehicle is being driven in our avalon is identical to toyota safety recall 13v-395 in lexus vehicles 2006 to 2011. Please find attached two documents, rcrit-13v395-3180.pdf on recent recall for toyota safety recall 13v-395, rcdnn-13v395-1839.pdf on defect information report from toyota to nhtsa on lexus intake-side variable-valve timing (vvt) system part 573.on june 27, 2019, i called stevens creek toyota and toyota hq and logged case [xxx]. I was informed by toyota there's no recall for avalon with the vin, and the vehicle had no factory warranty (currently 153k miles), and no extended warranty with engine stall for avalon. As a result, we need to repair the vehicle in our own expense which requires engine rebuilt as engine stall has caused severe damage to the vehicle.i was appalled by toyota for lack of initiation to address the safety risk in our avalon and we appreciate your thorough investigation in this matter.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

On 03/22/2010 toyota replaced a vvti oil hose under recall # 90k because the rubber portion of the hose was subject to failure that would cause the engine oil to spay out. On 07/24/2012 the replacement hose ruptured causing engine oil to spray out. The engine oil soaked the serpentine belt which is attached to the power steering pump as well as other components. This caused a loss of steering control which nearly caused an accident.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.the contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the engine rpms independently and abnormally increased. The contact was able to stop the vehicle without incident. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect.the approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

When starting the engine, with the brake depressed and green light on,when the start button is pressedthe steering wheel lock will buzz but the engine will not turn over.on other occasions the steering wheel lock will buzz and the engine will fire and then die.this happens at random times.the dealer checked for codes and there are none.calls to the zone and district offices have offered no solution. The problem has persisted for several months.we do not use the car for trips in fear it will happen and we will be unable to start the car and be stranded a distance from a dealer.

My 2006 avalon experienced a severe oil leak while my wife was driving it. Fortunately, she was close tohome and stopped it in front of the house where it deposited several quarts of oil. I had the car towed to the dealer who quickly recognized the problem as a well-known failure of the hose-to-tubing connection on an external lube oil line to the vvt mechanism. I had 51k miles, so the repair was covered by warranty.i have since purchased a new solid metal tube as is used on the 2009 models to replace the one the dealer installed which still had the rubber hose portion. I have purchased toyotas since the mid '80's and this is my first serious disappointment in both the quality of the product and the conduct of the company for not recalling this vehicle for this problem.

My wife was parked in a shopping center parking lot. She backed out of the spot the car was in and started to go forward. The car became uncontrollable and went in circles until it finally went up on a curb in the parking lot.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while driving approximately 70 mph, another driver warned the contact that something was wrong with his vehicle.he pulled over and discovered that there was no oil in the vehicle.the contact added oil and drove the vehicle to the dealer.the technician diagnosed the failure as being a vvti oil line rupture.the vehicle is currently at the dealer for repair.the failure and current mileages were 48,500.

2006 avalon, 70k miles. A hose carrying oil from one part of the engine to another ruptured without warning. The result was a complete loss of engine oil and potentially the destruction of the engine.

On a 300 mile road trip.check engine & oil light came on near end of journey.drove into dealership next morning& was told oil line ruptured depleting the engine of all oil and now need a new engine.the engine could have seized up while on the highway or caught fire due to oil in engine compartment & undercarriage.

On 2/3/09 while driving to work my check engine light came on.once i arrived at work i could see that there was oil all over the rear and under carriage of my car.i checked the oil in the engine and it was empty.i had the car towed to the dealership.they told me that the vvti line had broke and all the oil in the engine was gone.the part was on back order for 2 weeks.they could not tell me the extent of the damage to the engine until they take it apart and inspect it.they gave me an estimated bill of $1800 for parts only, not including labor charges.my warranty expired 2,000 miles ago.my car is taken in for regular service.when i called toyota they said they can not help me because the technical service bulletin put out about this part did not include my car, it was for the '05 model not the '06.

I was running my air conditioner when suddenly it stopped working and i received a check air conditioner.i also heard a clicking under the hood.i took the car in to toyota and the service advisor immediately new the problem, the vvt, an oil valve, ruptured and this is one of the common problems with the avalon.i didn't know at the time, but apparently this will dump most of the oil from the vehicle.no warning lights came on to indicate that the oil pressure was low or that there was a problem with the engine.the vvt was fixed and i drove off only to return due to an unfamiliar noise under the hood.come to find out due to the vvt valve rupture and the dumping of oil, the cam was destroyed and needs to be replaced at a cost of $ 5600.00.toyota is the only place this car has been serviced.if the service advisor knows the problem before the tech person looks at your car, sounds like a very all too familiar problem for there not to be a recall on this part.

2006 toyota avalon complete loss of engine oil with no warning light.dealer technician advises that this is a problem for this vehicle year.the dealer and the company know this is a problem.no advisory of any kind. This car has been serviced regularly per dealer/toyota specs. Any problem with the oil and engine in a car is a potentially seriousproblem.see websites for similar complaints for example, at www.carcomplaints.com site lists 43 complaints for avalon model that i am reporting to you. Advised corporate office and dealer.neither seem concerned about possibilities of this kind of danger. Thank you.

Avalon limited 3.2l v6* automatic transmission* 72,900 mileswell, this is my 3rd toyota, the car was running fine up until thursday night when i started the car i heard a cranky fan like noise, i did not know what it was after i drove shopping and came back after 2-3 miles and parked the car on my driveway in the dark. Next morning when i pulled my car out of the driveway the noise continued and i saw a pool of engine oil all over, i called the dealer immediately and surprisingly they offered to repair the car the same day (same day appointments-never happened before even for just oil changes)after taking a look they said the oil line needs to be fixed and cost would be $450 for a half days work. I called back the evening and was told now they called toyota as they don't know what was wrong but have not heard from toyota so i wont get my car up until after labor day weekend- (had to get a rental for a week)next week, they told be the gear shaft cracked and gaskets need replacement and a 16 hrs job and would cost approx $6000 to repair "but toyota will cover 50%" even though i am out of 60,000 miles warranty. I did some research and found this is a manufacturer defect.i walked in to dealer to see my car and the mechanic showed me the broken part and told me toyota has since redesigned this part so it does not break and cause sudden oil leaks- once the new part is replaced i should not expect more similar problems- i am keeping my fingers crossed.i called toyota and they made a note of my problem but said i have to get the number of the toyota regional manager from the dealer who said he cannot let me talk directly due to" business relationship with him". I told them its not fair for the customers to pay for the manufacturing faults of toyota. Finally the "hidden" toyota regional manager offered to settle for paying 2/3 rd for my car's repair. I am concerned about others driving the avalon and a big cover-up by toyota.

2006 toyota avalon oil return line to engine made of rubber break at high speed.

I was traveling on the i-85 in my 2006 toyota avalon for approximately 1.5 hours when the air conditioning indicator light started blinking.shortly thereafter the a/c shut off and the "check engine" light illuminated.within a minute or so, the "check oil" light started blinking slowly at first, then after about 30 seconds it was on continuously.by this time i had pulled off into a gas station. As i was pulling into the station the engine was making a loud clicking noise.after it was parked, i checked the dipstick and there was no oil whatsoever in the car.as well, the right side of the engine compartment was coated with oil.the underside of the car, including the inside of the wheels and brakes was completely coated with oil as well.the back of the trunk also had a light coat of oil on it, presumably from the spray underneath while traveling @ 65-70mph.i then purchased a quart of oil, put it in the engine and it drained onto the ground.i had the car towed to town & country toyota, a charlotte dealer, who said the cause of the problem was rupture of the oil bypass hose.as i had noticed the previous night, this hose is 1) very close to the ground and subject to hits from road debris, etc. And2) very close to the hot exhaust pipe.the use of a rubber hose for a pressurized flammable liquid system in this location is absolutely reckless.at a minimum, it should be some sort of armored or shielded hose.i'm amazed the car didn't start on fire from being doused with five quarts of oil leaking from the ruptured hose and suspect the wind from interstate speeds prevented this from happening.the service person at the dealership indicated this is a common problem with 2006 avalons and he couldn't understand why there hasn't been a recall issued.the only the engine wasn't destroyed (with 39,000 miles on it) was because i was lucky to be in a good position to pull off.today i found the same issue documented on carcomplaints.com.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving 35 mph, the vehicle began accelerating without warning.the contact was unable to slow the vehicle down by engaging the brakes or neutral. The engine shut off on its own. The contact confirmed that the driving mat wasn't the cause of the vehicle accelerating. On three occasions he spoke with lexus, toyota and the dealer. The dealer attempted to diagnose the failure from august 11th to august 13th and could not duplicate the failure. The contact read an article re: lexus 350 es experiencing the same failure. The failure mileage was 6950 and the current mileage was 7295.

I had driven about 3 miles at 40 mph in my '06 avalon with 40,000 mile. There was no warning. My car began smoking from the hood. Oil was leaking, large amount of oil. No oil light came on.no dashboard lights or notification of a problem was indicated.my dipstick show that i have no oil in the car.i just had an oil change recently. I am waiting for my toyota dealer to call me back. I have left 2 messages.

Suddenly oil spurted out from under engine compartment.took it to dealer who after determining it was a ruptured hi-pressure oil line informed me it was under a service bulletin.they provided a loaner and repaired it without cost after a second day in the shop.

On wednesday, april 8th i was in the state of new jersey and noticed that my car was leaking oil so i went to the service station and filled it with two quarts of oil.i was on my way home to maryland and had to stop for gas in pennsylvania so i checked the oil level in my car and found that it was very low.at this point i realized there was a serious problem so i put another two quarts in my car and contacted lancaster toyota in lancaster pennsylvania (717-569-7373).i explained my situation to them and they told me to bring my car in for service.my service advisor's name at lancaster toyota was ms. Sharon eshelman.ms. Eshelman informed me that my oil cooling line also known as the vvti line had ruptured and toyota has a new replacement part that is on national back order.lancaster toyota didn't have the new replacement part however they could put the same defective part that is a known problem back on my car at a cost of $307.09 which would allow me to get home.i picked my car up from lancaster toyota thursday, april 9th and drove it to toyota of bowie to check my engine for damage.on friday they called and said he didn't see any damage to my engine and pick the car up.i drove it directly to my son's doctor's office in crofton, md approximately 3 miles away from toyota of bowie.put the car in park and smelled something burning and heard the engine knocking.i lifted the hood and saw oil spurting out and dripping everywhere, the oil cooling line (vvti line part no. 1570731012) had ruptured again!i called toyota and informed them of the events and they told me to tow the car back to them. Toyota headquarters in california should recall this part because it is not safe.this part can rupture at any point and time and the oil light does not come on. Please see links http://www.carcomplaints.com/toyota/avalon/2006/engine/complete_loss_of_engine_oil_with_no_warning_light.shtmlhttp://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2006/toyota/avalon.

The car a/c stopped functioning and i soon lost most of my oil. I was left on a sunday without much oil and had to get the car towed to the dealer. The replaced the oil line at no charge and luckily i had aaa towing insurance. I was out on the road without oil in the car!!!

I went out this morning to warm my car. When i came out to take my son to school all of my oil had leaked out on the ground. I had just went in for a regular oil chg at the toyota dealer. I didn't know what was wrong. I drove the car to the dealer not knowing that my engine could have locked up on me. Luckily i made it to the dealer safely. After looking at my car the toyota rep. Came out and told me that my vvtl line has busted. I was like this is a brand new car. I only had it for 3 years. The rep said that the part is under warranty and it will probably take some weeks before the part comes in. She said that they already had cars there with the same problem that have been sitting for weeks. She said that the part was on back order. I really think that its crazy that toyota have had this many complaints on the vvtl line breaking and have not made they customers aware of it.i am very dissatisfied with toyota, and i think that they need to do a recall on all cars regarding this problem. At least send something out to there customers making them aware of it. The thing is now the part that they are sending out ..will that have a defect in it too? if they are just replacing the same old part what happens when your car isn't under warranty anymore? if it wasn't for my co-worker telling me about this website i would not have known that so many people have had the same problem. This is just so upsetting!

Oil leak 2006 avalon xls 65,857 milesafter driving home about 45 miles and parked car smelled the odor of burning oil. I inspected the engine compartment and saw oil on the upper portion of the engine after looking under the car saw oil was dripping. Took in to toyota the next day. Before i could tell the service person everything he told me that problem was a hose and that it would be about 400.00 to repair as my car was out of warranty.

High pressure oil line broke. Ac light began blinking, then car started leaving oil paths in and out of driveway. Dealer found no ac problem, attributed to oil all over the upper engine compartment. They stated three other lines recently replaced.

Excessive engine noise when cold - when the wife notices this problem, it is pass time to report it !i have noticed it for years ! just getting worst.

2006 avalon. Dramatic loss of oil. No oil indicator light, no high temp. Some oil left in engine but did not register on dipstick. Oiltube replaced.

On wednesday, april 8th noticed that my car was leaking oil so i went to the service station and filled it with two quarts of oil.i realized there was a serious problem so i put another two quarts in my car and contacted a toyota dealership in lancaster pennsylvania because i was out of town. They informed me that my oil cooling line also known as the vvti line had ruptured and toyota has a new replacement part that is on national back order.lancaster toyota didn't have the new replacement part however they could put the same defective part that is a known problem back on my car at a cost of $307.09 which would allow me to get home.after getting my car from pai drove it directly to toyota of bowie and asked them to check my engine for damage.they said he didn't see any damage to my engine.i picked my car up and drove it approximately 3 miles away from toyota of bowie put the car in park & smelled something burning and heard the engine knocking.i lifted the hood and saw oil spurting out and dripping everywhere'..the oil cooling line (vvti line part no. 1570731012) had ruptured again!i had the car towed back to toyota of bowie and as of today 4/28 it is still there.no one will claim responsibility for this defect.not toyota headquarters, or lancaster toyota.

Driving car on highway engine starting knocking.oil light was not on.next day car ran 1/4 mile and all dash lights came on.checked oil and there was none in the engine.this was one week after having an oil change and 70,000 mile full service.towed to dealer.was told the oil pipe had corroded and broken off.how this happens in a 2 year old car i will never understand. Either a manufacturing or design defect.

On 12/7/2008 oil came out from bottom of the car. On monday 12/8 i had the car towed to a toyota dealer--after looking at the car i was told it was a failure of something called a vvti oil hose--this part is on national back order by toyota and wont be available until the end of december or mid january (according to toyota)--there is a technical service bulletin about this and i was also told 1748 cars have had the same problem-----why would it take so long to obtain these parts?

When slowing my 2006 avalon for turn, speed bump, etc. And then accelerating there is often a lag in the transmission engaging and when it does the car lurches.i have complained many times to 2 different dealers about this since the car was new.after a year or so 1 dealer said that toyota had issued an adjustment procedure which they performed.the problem went away for a while but has returned.in light of the recent recalls and stories about possible electronic problems with these cars i wanted to add my story to the list.i consider this a serious safety issue since the lag in transmission engagement could cause an accident when making a left turn, especially if it worsens.further, the only way i know about this latest recall is through the news - toyota has not notified me directly.this makes the third recall on this car - floor mats, vvt-i oil hose and now accelerator!needles to say -i am not happy with my purchase and will seriously try to convince my wife to take our business elsewhere in the future!

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact was traveling at speeds of 5 mph, attempting to make a left turn when he heard an unusual noise coming in the engine area. Immediately, the vehicle began hesitating and within seconds, resumed normal operation. On a separate occasion while driving in reverse, there was an unusual increase in the rpms. The vehicle then accelerated with a loud sound coming from the engine. The failure would occur whenever the vehicle was in operation. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on five separate occasions for the identical failures. The dealer was unable to duplicate or diagnose the failures. The failure mileage was 500. Updated 06/04/10. *ljthe consumer stated he difficulty starting the vehicle, the engine had a high idle, the transmission would hesitate into gear at 10-15 mph and then catch would catch up and disengage and the drivers door wouldn't open. Updated 10/14/10

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while driving at approximately 5 mph an explosion occurred in the engine and smoke began to come from under the hood.the vehicle was pulled over and the highway patrol appeared on the scene.a police report was filed but no injuries were reported.the vehicle was towed to an insurance company garage where an independent mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure.the vehicle had not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were 142,000.

Car started leaking large amount of oil and had to be towed to dealer. No oil light came on. Oil line on engine leaking. Oil covered other parts that had to be replaced. Toyota had no manufacture replacement parts in usa and stated they would have to be manufactured. Manufacture of parts could take 60-90 days. Dealer replaced part with substitute oil line recommended by toyota in order to repair car in a timely manner.car was covered in oil under car and was not cleaned. Motor could have been ruined had oil leak not been discovered when parking the car. Notice this has been a problem nationally and there has been no recall. Price of non toyota part and repairs was $683.00. This should have been covered in a recall, with all the problems this part is causing.

March 18, 2009 i was traveling 300 miles from home in houston tocovington la.about 20 miles from my destination i heard a clicking noise from engine, a/c stopped working & check engine light on.the next morning i checked the oil level & it was completely dry.put 4-5 qts of oil in and as soon as i turned on the car, all the oil came pouring out onto the parking lot.drove the car into toyota dealership & left it.was told the next day it would need a complete engine rebuilt.left the car in covington la & returned to houston.the car was delivered back to me in houston in a few weeks.on june 30, 2009 i was on another drive about 90 miles from home & a/c stopped working.took into local dealership - told freon was totally empty.they refilled & could find no leaks.while in for this issue, they discovered that a valve cover was leaking & replaced it.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. On september 4, 2009, he stated that there was a return fuel line in the fuel pump and was at risk of causing a fire if the line were to break. He also observed that there was an oil leak on the floor and confirmed that there was no oil on the dipstick and a large amount of oil leaked ontotheexhaust pipe. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer stated that they would repair the vehicle per the extended warranty and that there were no related recalls. The part necessary to repair the vehicle is on back order. The contact is concerned about the safety risk and the possibility that a fire could have occurred. The failure and current mileages were 77000.

When entering traffic from the on ramp and with plenty of time under normal conditions my toyota avalon, upon acceleration the engine actually cut out i mean with a serious hesitation that i could not respond to in time. The auto quickly approaching my rear veered into the next lane causing the third car to run off on the shoulder of the road. This is indeed a highly safety problem. I escaped without a scratch to myself or car. This has happened many times before but not to this extent. I took my car back to thompsons toyota in placerville ca 3 times for the same problem and each time they tell me they can't find anything wrong with the acceleration. I have about 10,000 miles on the car now but the problem surfaced less than a week after i bought it. What are my options i need the car and i must drive this safety affected product. The car is ok after you get to 60 mph. On acceleration from a stop position a 4 cyl. Corolla and honda can perform better, in facti have a tacomatoyota 4 cyl1999 with 100,000 mile that also accelerates better than my avalon.

After arriving home, i pulled into garage and noticed an odor of burning oil.upon exiting the car, i saw a trail of oil from the back of the car up my driveway, extending up to the street. Looking under the car, i noticed oil dripping from the engine area. I found that i lost all engine oil without any warning lights or sounds advising me of the problem. Fortunately the loss of oil only occurred in my driveway and garage area.my car had to be towed to dealer. They installed several gaskets, a timing chain cover, a fipg oil pan, a belt (v-ribbed), non-chlor brake c, a replaceable eleme, another gasket, a pipe sub-assy, 0i. Since oil was sprayed in engine area, they had to wash engine off.upon researching this oil loss problem, i find many other 2006 toyota avalons have experienced exactly the same thing.if i had been driving on the interstate, i am sure my engine would have quit on me with no warning and could have resulted in a bad accident not to mention the destruction of the engine itself.

1. I was at a stoplight, foot firmly on the brake, doing nothing but waiting for the light to change.suddenly i realized my car was moving forward, so i pushed the brakes harder.the pedal went down further but the car kept moving forward.all of this took only a few seconds.then i heard and felt the engine accelerating very loudly.just at that moment the light changed, and traffic sped ahead.without thinking, i put my foot on the accelerator and the engine stopped roaring, the car accelerated normally and the brakes were responsive.2. This was the only incident.3. I was actually on my way to the toyota dealer for routine maintenance when the incident occurred, so i continued on my way.when i got to the dealer, i had the person who met me at my car check the floor mat before i walked away.he said it was fine.toyota performed all recall actions, asked if i wanted the computer re-programmed to allow the brakes to override everything else (i said yes), and filled out the forms and performed actions in accordance with an sua incident.they gave me a loaner and the next day told me that my car would be released. I asked for, and received a copy of the form for an sua incident, but it only has instructions for the technician and no written results, so i don't know what was found and what was done, other thannormal recall work.i am filling this out because i no longer trust toyota, and now i am afraid.it only happened once, so i don't know if they fixed the problem, and i want to be part of the record of incidents.

I have a 2006 toyota avalon with ~15,000 miles on it.intermittently, the car will hesitate on acceleration.this is extremely dangerous as i have almost been rear-ended several times and have had to slam on the brakes, at times, to avoid a side-swipe collision.the delay in input to the accelerator pedal to actual acceleration is 2-4 seconds at times.this is a problem known to toyota.the service department is aware of the problem but describes it as a "characteristic" of the drive by wire throttle system.this is a very dangerous "characteristic" and i'm certain will result in accidents.there are many examples on the "forum" on edmunds.com where owners have expressed the same problem/concern.

A few months ago i brought my car in to toyota on nicholasville with an "oil problem".it had been slowly leaking oil.no oil lights had come on.then while driving down the road i saw smoke and smelled oil.the vvti oil line was leaking and had sort of "blown up" all over my engine.needless to say, i was very upset.i went directly to the dealer.it was repaired quickly and i paid almost $500.00 for the repair! i then researched on-line and became aware the vvti oil line leak was a problem faced my many avalon owners.afterwards i remembered i had purchased "toyota extra care" and free scheduled maintenance.i suppose i should probably file a claim with toyota for reimbursement; but i guess that is another issue!i now remember to tell my service tech before each repair! now, a few months later, i have the same issue all over again.this time i am extremely upset.i called toyota on nicholasville and was told to bring my car to the dealership right away and they would work me in that afternoon.i did.i knew the problem was the same issue with the vvti line, and realized it would not be repaired that same day. After waiting about two hours, the tech came and spoke with me.he told me it was, once again, a problem with the vvti oil line.although toyota did have a repair part available, it was a back-ordered part.dave indicated many people had been waiting for this part and it would probably take as long as 4-8 weeks to get my car repaired.i really thought he was kidding.finally, he convinced me he was not!i did receive my car back in a week.so far so good.seems to me this should be a "recall" from toyota.i wish i understood why it was not.

We spotted drops of oil coming from our toyota avalon 2006. A toyota dealership diagnosed the problem to be a slow oil leak from the front timing cover. The dealership estimates it will cost over $2,200 to reseal or replace the cover which costs about $50. We have decided, as of now, to not spend the major dollars involved, and keep a eye on the oil in the car. We have also researched that particular problem in the 2006 avalon, and have found nhtsa technical service bulletin, item number 10021531, and 2006 toyota avalon, service bulletin #: 01907. The summary of this bulletin reads: "engine oil leak from front timing cover." the bulletin seems to be describing our problem exactly. When a comparison between the money involved with the repair ($2,200) to the part toyota will replace ($50), there's something wrong with the 2006 avalon's design and/or the situation calls for a toyota recall.

My 2006 toyota avalon had a sudden loss of all my oil from a ruptured oil line while i was driving home from the store 2 miles away. Apparently toyota knew about this problem based on other numerous similar incidents based on web comments. The oil warning light never went on and i never received a recall notice about this problem which was sent to other avalon owners.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.when depressing the accelerator pedal from a dead stop, the engine idles and the vehicle does not respond.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the failure was possibly due to the emission control.when the contact took the vehicle to a different toyota dealer, they stated that the failure may be due to the transmission.the failure does not occur when traveling uphill.the current and failure mileages were 23,000.updated 03-25-08 the consumer stated at low speeds the engine revs and after informing the dealer he was informing nhtsa the dealer found a fix for the defect. The consumer stated still shifts unevenly. Updated 03/25/08

Oil gushed from engine, leaving a trail from my house to my neighbor's where he noticed the oil on the highway (enough to remain there for two weeks).this was a bulletin, not a recall via toyota.needless to say i had never heard of the possibility of losing all of the oil.the service department had my car for approximately 4 days and fixed the problem.if i had been speeding down the interstate, the engine could have locked up at a high rate of speed and caused other problems.i'm uncertain as to which bulletin it was, i just lost all of my oil in a matter of seconds!!!!!

Experienced a leak in the "vvti" oil line to the rear cylinder bank in this transverse mounted v6 engine at 78,000 miles.fortunately, this was discovered before engine failure or damage to surrounding equipment occurred.searching online, have found others were not so fortunate.this problem is a safety concern because it could lead to sudden engine failure as well as the potential for engine fire as oil leaks on hot parts.the repair cost was $202 for labor.toyota paid for parts needed for the repair as part of a customer satisfaction response after a complaint was made.there should be a recall to replace this part, as my research online reveals it to be occurring to many people when their cars are over 70,000 miles and therefore out of the normal warranty period.this is clearly a defect and not a normal wear item.

1.without warning, the engine started making whirring noises when in motion and the engine check light illuminated (unbeknownst to me, it was dropping oil.2.after it was first repaired under warranty, it occurred again.3.dealer reported failure of the vvt-i pipe, replacing the pipe, timing chain cover, gaskets, camshaft gear assembly, cylinder head gasket, camshaft bearing, camshaft gear assembly, additional gaskets and bolts.

2006 toyota avalon ct dealer quoted $1800 for timing cover oil leak; 17 hours of labor, inexpensive part; 3 recalls to date with this vehicle-extreme inconvenience and suspect of any issues on this car and toyota record is horrendous per multiple safety and other recalls. I've seen other complaints on this timing cover reseal exact issue.a service bulletin was supposedly issued in 2007 eg 019-07.nhtsa bulletin 10021531.when will consumers get protection on these further toyota issues??i will raise this to highest levels.

I found a huge amount of oil in the driveway after traveling approximately 60 miles to take my 5 year old daughter to school. The oil stick read empty. I immediately added oil so i could take it to the dealership. I made several calls before taking it to the dealership because i had recently had my car serviced at another toyota dealership. When describing the problem the maintenance assistant instantly diagnosed the problem without looking at the avalon. I called two other dealerships and they had the same response.when i got to the dealership they confirmed the problem and at that time told me that the "pipe assembly" part is on national backorder and that they weren't expecting the part until february 16, the date the vehicle was taken in was january 15th. Toyota is taking little to no responsibility for their defective part that is causing undo hardship on toyota's owners. After talking to various avalon dealers, i found that some owners had to have their engines replaced because of the defective part that toyota is aware of that have not informed the public of.apparently, toyota has been quietly fixing the problem while the vehicles are under warranty and has failed to let the consumers aware of this ongoing deficiency.now that the part is on national backorder the severity of this problem is being address daily. I am hoping other measures will be taken to fix this problem now that the public is aware of the backorder. I am just glad that i identified the problem before it got worse. This problem could have lead to my daughter and i stranded on hwy 495 in washington dc traffic, on the cold highway waiting for the tow truck to pick us up because the engine locked up.the reason why i'm submitting this complaint is because i spoke, to three dealership, in three different states and each identified this as a problem. Each dealership knew of this defective part and problem.

Car completely ran out of oil with no warning lights ever illuminating.the car was not drivable and had to be towed. Found out vvti line had tsb (although i had been in the dealership service dept for oil change the month before) the part was being redesigned by toyota and was backordered. Six weeks later ( i still do not have my car), toyota replaced the part and refuses to test the engine for damage caused as a result of car running completely out of oil. Their customer service department assigned us a case number but then no one ever called us back, meanwhile i do not want to accept my car as i feel it is potentially unsafe due theobvious engine damage that had to have occurred since the engine was banging and knocking before i realized what was going on.toyota refuses to issue recall and has failed at warning consumers and the dealers have failed at doing due diligence in checking the tsb issues when people are in their shops.if i had known this was a potential issue, the engine damage could have been prevented.

On three different occasions, while driving my 2006 toyota avalon xls, i pressed down on the gas pedal to pass another vehicle and the gas pedal continued to depress on its own after i took my foot off of it. I stood on the gas pedal and it took about 5 seconds for the pedal to disengage after accelerating very rapidly. The third time, i had to shut off the ignition. I am afraid to press hard on the gas pedal at this point as it is a very frightening situation. A less experienced driver would get injured. I will not let anybody else drive my car because of this. The dealer had no explanation which i find very disturbing. Help!!

Car has been fine up until this point. But when starting the car one morning, oil began streaming onto the ground. I filled the car with oil, drove the 2 miles to the repair shop and just under 2 quarts leaked outafter that short drive. After they removed the inspection plate, they found no evidence of chaffing but a simply small hole that had developed in the middle section of the vvti oil supply line. They replaced the oil supply line and now the car engine has a lot of clatter at low rpms. I have the old part available for inspection.car has 63,000 miles on it.

I was driving my 2006 toyota avalon limited when the oil line apparently let go spewing oil all over the engine causing it to smoke.all the oil drained from the engine as a result, creating an environmental hazard.the toyota dealer that repaired the line mentioned that there was a bulletin from toyota alerting dealers to the problem but it is not a recall.a review of edmunds and other websites shows a long list of complaints regarding this specific engine failure.

In july 2009 our 2006 toyota avalonxl had a vvt-i oil hose explode causing oil damage and personal repair expense of $277.67. I was notified by toyota of a recall to replace this hose. It stated if already replaced then to send in the repair order, proof of payment and proof of ownership for reimbursement. This was submitted to toyota on january 11, 2010. No response was received until i contacted them after 71 days. After a lengthy delay, i was denied reimbursement because repairs were not completed by an authorized toyota dealer. My complaint is i am responsible for damages and repairs due to toyota's defective parts without reimbursement after toyota admitted their parts were defective.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while driving 70 mph, the contact heard a strange noise coming from the passenger side of the vehicle.she arrived at her residence and noticed oil leaking from underneath the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that an oil hose had burst.the failure was repaired under warranty.although the part was available at that time, the contact discovered several complaints regarding this component not being repaired due to the part being on backorder.the failure and current mileages were 70,788.4/01/09*njupdated 04/09/09.

I have a 2006 toyota avalon, and recently i realized that the engine was leaking oil quite profusely.i took it right into the dealership and they stating that the vvt (variable valve timing) injection hose was broken.they replaced my hose as i have the platinum care protection plan through toyota.my concern is it seems like this has happened to other who own 2006 avalons.if the part is faulty why don't they recall the cars and replace the faulty parts.

Vvt oil line failure-as i was driving, i heard a ?whirring? noise for 1-2 minutes.then it stopped, and the oil light flashed on and off.i immediately pulled over and checked under the hood, and oil was sprayed all over the engine compartment and there was no oil level indicated on the dipstick.while waiting for a tow truck, a significant amount of the remaining oil drained out under the car.the toyota dealer indicated they had 3 other avalons with the same problem, and parts were backordered.no repair date was promised.from on-line message boards, this is a widespread problem with the 05-06 avalon.toyota is apparently well aware of this potentially dangerous problem, but has done nothing to proactive repair/replace the line.there is no warning of the problem until it happens, and it may leave the driver and occupants of the car in a potentially dangerous situation.

My wife was driving down the freeway and notices a cloud of smoke trailing from the rear of our 2006 toyota avalon.when she arrives at work she sees oil pouring onto the parking lot surface.there was no warning light or dashboard notice signaling oil pressure loss.we had the vehicle towed to a repair shop where they noted that a rubber hose that presumably circulates engine oil had ruptured.the repair was done that day with parts readily available from the local dealer.when the repair man was conversing with the toyota service manager (a friend), the service manager had never heard of the problem then later changed his story.rather suspicious.

I was traveling on the ny i-87 in my 2006 toyota avalon for approximately 30 minutes when the "check engine" light illuminated. Within a minute or so, the "check oil" light started blinking slowly at first, then after about 30 seconds it was on continuously. By this time i had pulled off into a gas station. As i was pulling into the station the engine was making a loud clicking noise. After it was parked, i checked the dipstick and there was no oil remaining in the engine.the underside of the car, including inside of wheels and brakes was completely coated with oil as well as the back of the trunk. Presumably from the spray underneath while traveling @ 65-70mph. I then purchased3 quarts of oil, put it in the engine and it drained onto the ground. The mechanic stated there is a pin hole in the rubber section of the oil line. The use of a rubber hose for a pressurized flammable liquid system in this location is absolutely reckless. At a minimum, it should be some sort of armored or shielded hose. I'm amazed the car didn't start on fire from being doused with five quarts of oil leaking from the ruptured hose. The service person at the dealership indicated this is a common problem with 2006 avalons and he couldn't understand why there hasn't been a recall issued. The engine repairs caused by this defect will cost me up to $5000. Today i found at least a 1000 complaints regarding this same issue on carcomplaints.com and aboutautomobile.com.i would hate to see a death result in this issue caused by fire due to hot oil.

Car has major oil leakage on my 300+ mile drive down to la from san jose.that morning, the car is dry and fine.the car has always been maintained by the dealer.there was no indication of oil loss.the oil light did not even go on.luckily we took a pit stop at coalinga, where we notice burning smell and smoke was every where (after the car was parked).when i checked the oil level, there was no oil left as indicated on the dipstick.the car was towed to the nearest toyota, which did not believe that there's a pending tsb on this line, so they charged us for replacing it.up until now, i'm afraid to take the car for long distance drive.i don't know if any damage to the engine was done due to lack of oil.after i got home, i contacted local dealer, but they refuse to look at it, unless i put out money for the diagnostic.my complaint and concern is that the part that got replaced is the same part that failed.since this is a known issue, i'm afraid this problem will repeat again in about another 44000 miles, which the car is already out of warranty.also, the oil light never came on, so it proves very dangerous while driving on the long trip.

For some time - several weeks - i had noticed an odor of burning oil in the passenger compartment of my 2006 toyota avalon.i was exiting the interstate and at the stoplight noticed a great amount of smoke pouring from the engine compartment.i was, fortunately, within a mile of the dealership from which i had purchased the car and drove it into their service bay.when i got out of the car i noticed that a great amount of oil was pouring out onto the floor of the service bay.the service man came over and i began to explain the circumstances of the oil leak.they immediately told me what it was - an rubber oil line.they kept the car for three days and returned it "repaired".now after a couple of months i again notice the same smell in the passenger compartment and intend to take it as soon as i can back to the dealer.question:why isn't toyota putting out a recall on this particular year and model of the toyota?i see that there are many similar complaints being made.

When stepping on the gas for a quick acceleration, there is almost a gagging sulfur smell inside the car. This happens when entering the freeway via an on-ramp or just passing another car.

The day after my car had 3 recalls corrected, i was driving around 20 mph when the car started to take off.i put the brake on real hard and got it stopped at about 35 mph.needless to say my passenger and i were scared to death.

This is not a complaint, but a follow up to complaints regarding the toyota automobile that their throttle sticks open causing unwanted acceleration. March 2006 i bought a new toyota avalon xls from david bruce, bourbonnais, il. About six months following this purchase, i was pulling away from a red light accelerating rather quickly. When i let up on the accelerator, the car continued to accelerate. While applying the brake with the left foot, i put my right foot under the accelerator petal in an effort to raise it. It was not stuck in a downward position and i was able to raise it up and down with my foot with the car still accelerating. At this point i stomped on the accelerator petal many hard times with my right foot. Finally the problem resolved itself and the acceleration stopped. I tried to duplicate this problem many times afterwards without success. I looked at the accelerator petal, floor mat, and the area around it to make sure that there was nothing the might have caused this problem. I talked to david bruce about it and figured it was a freak occurrence. Over the past two years i never thought about it again until the news media and toyota began an investigation into the problem.when this problem occurred, i did not think of using the start/off button to shut off the engine, but am aware of it now. The reason for the letter is that toyota is looking at the driver side floor mat as a possible problem and i feel that this is not the area where the problem is occurring. In my case i am 95 percent certain it was not a floor mat that caused the acceleration as i was able to put my foot under the accelerator pedal without the decrease its acceleration. But, in all fairness to toyota, there could have been an unknown reason why my floor mat interacted with the accelerator petal that i did not see.

My 2006 toyota avalon has been giving me problems with the floor matsand accelerator getting stuck for over two years and now the accelerator gets stuck on its own. I am afraid to drive it back and forth on the highway and hope that toyota would replace it with a rental car until it can fix it.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while driving approximately 30 mph on normal road conditions, the navigation system was not operating normally.the contact experienced difficulty accessing the navigation module due to the rocker switch failure.the vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer for inspection and they stated that the navigation system was operating properly.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 35,000.

Purchased 2006 toyota avalon limited with navigation system.over time, navigation system did not work properly. Spoke with numerous people at toyota, and they all agreed:1) navigation system does not function as intended2) there is no known solution3) toyota is not looking for a fix to problem4) toyota apologizes for selling a defective product and offers no solution or alternative5) toyota continued to sell navigation systems that did not work correctly.

The rear deck brake light works when it wants to. No explanation provided by dealer. Expensive to trace.

I am using this method to alert the industry to a very serious problem with all automobiles with driving lights.in low visibility conditions- dusk, fog, rain, snow, etc., the driving lights increase the vehicle's visibility to oncoming traffic.however, the rear lights do not illuminate when only the driving lights are turned.this lack of tail lights makes it very dangerous for vehicles that are following a vehicle with driving lights only illuminated.i have discussed this with many drivers who feel very safe in low visibility conditions because they have turned on their driving lights- unaware that their rear lights are not illuminated, making it very difficult to see the automobile from the rear..i feel that the rear lights should illuminate when the driving lights are turned on, increasing the automobile's visibility to both oncoming and following traffic.

2006 toyota avalon.rear deck brake light works only intermittently.safety issue.suspected electrical issue.dealer was initially unable to fix, and estimates $400+to replace.

2006 - toyota avalon auto dim headlights, not safe at night, due to only showing approximately 2 car lengths visibility.

Brake light in rear window works intermittently.same thing for a friends newer avalon.

(1) time is approximately 11:30 pm, january 16, 2007. I am driving southbound in outside lane on divided interstate highway approximately 400' behind vehicle ahead, headlights on dim. Weather is clear, roads are clear, however, area had recent ice and sleet but most has been snow plowed to the road shoulders. Traffic is light, with vehicles ahead and to the rear. Speed is approximately 60 mph and i am watching the road closely. Passenger in vehicle is witness.(2) i am immediately upon a chunk of ice about the size of a basketball that appeared to have fallen from the vehicle ahead. There was no swerve by the vehicle ahead to indicate an attempt to dodge an object in the road. The ice is sliding on the road moving in the same direction as the traffic. I hit the ice with my vehicle just under the bumper and inside the left front wheel. The object was not illuminated by my vehicles headlights in time for me to brake or maneuver around it. The impact broke my front bumper cowling, under engine shield and right front wheel mud guard. (3) the vehicle is mobile and no parts left the vehicle as a result of the impact. A full inspection has not yet been conducted to determine if there are other damages. No estimate of cost has been secured although my estimation is they will approach $2500.having had this experience, i question the integrity of the headlights ability to illuminate an object ahead of the vehicle while headlights are on dim. This is a new 2006 model full size car hid headlights. The headlights appear to do a very good job of lighting the roadway at a distance that appears to be about 150'. This illuminated distance is a noticeable difference (longer) from a second vehicle that i have although the second vehicle is a pickup about 8 years older with a different type of headlight.

Hid headlights on the toyota avalon limited are unsafe at night especially on hills in unlit country areas when the arc of light extends less than 2 car lengths in front of the vehicle.i have dvd that i would like to provide for your viewing.

2006 toyota avalon limited headlights have very poor illumination beyond 2 car lengths ahead of vehicle while driving at night.there is a very distinctive line where the headlights project ahead of the car and from there it's very dark ahead.almost lost control of the car,at 60 mphtrying to dodge a dear in the road that wasn't visible due to such a poor headlight illumination.it'sa driving safety issue that should be investigated.took the vehicle to toyota to get the headlights adjusted/aligned & they said they were properly adjusted at the factory & no problems noted!

Dt*:the contact stated at night with dim headlights, the vehicle was driven through country roads and mountains, but due to the automatic exterior level lighting there was poor visibility.the vehicle was seen by the dealer.the service department realigned the exterior headlights.

We have found the auto leveling headlights (hid) to be aimed much too low.we are not comfortable using low beams at 55 mph and the high beams arenot nearly as good as conventional headlights.

2006 toyota avalon headlights are to dim after dark and does not project far enough to see in front of vehicle.

Unintended acceleration of 2006 toyota avalon and headlight went off during the emergency stop(note: the toyota avalon has not gone through the recall repair but recall repair has been scheduled)i was driving on 101s near mountain view during evening commute hour. I was tapping the gas pedal as 101s was in stop-and-go traffic condition. I felt the avalonwent faster than i was expecting and i did not depress the gas pedal more than light tapping. The avalon was at 40mph. I applied the brake to slow down the car immediately. I managed to stop my car in time to avoid a collision with a fully stopped vehicle in front of me. I noticed my auto headlight was off when i was in complete stop. I quickly turned the headlight switch from auto position to on and the headlight did not go on. I turned the switch to off position and on position. Then, the light came back on.

Unintended accelleration of my 2006 toyota avalon with only 25,000 miles on it. Feb 24, 2010.i wsa driving 35 mph, having slowed for traffic, then changed lanes, barely touched the accelerator and the vehicle took off like a dragster.i was able to place in netural and brake the vehicle to a stop while the motor was at high end rev.i checked to see if the floor mats were obstructing the gas pedel.they were not.i turned off the vehicle and started it twice more, both times the engine was in extreme high rev mode.as i sat on the highway, the accelerator "sprang" back on it's own.i then started the engine again and it was operating normally. I called toyota immediately and was directed to a customer service rep in california.i eventually made it to a toyota dealer in tulsa, ok, where the on board computer was "flashed" and pedel recall was performed.service tech wrote up a floormat issue and stated the "service engine" light was reported by me to be on, which it was not.this should be verified by the incident report #1002144206 of 2-24-2010 as taken over the telephone by toyota csr don lombardo; phone # 800-225-2769. I would bet my life this was not a mechanical related cause, but a programming issue which caused the throttle body to go wide open.i do not know if the computer "black box" information was downloaded by the dealer or if it is too late.when the dealership general manager was told by the service technician there was "zero" wear on the gas pedel joint, he was speechless, but eventually said toyota needs the vehicle to go through it from bumper-to-bumper since it has such low mileage.

The check engine light came on with the vsc and slip lights on the dash. Had it scanned and the codes are p2195 and p0138. I am having a huge problem with this, i feel that toyota should cover this problem or atleast most of it. I have a 2006 toyota avalon xls and i had problems with sudden acceleration when stopped at a red light with my foot lightly on the break pedal, the engine is running, and the car is in gear (drive).all at once, the car would accelerate forward really fast but stop when i push hard on the break pedal.i was thinking that maybe my foot was slipping from the break and onto the accelerator pedal without me noticing it, however, in light of the recent publicity about the gas pedal problems with toyotas, i am thinking that maybe my foot was not slipping and this piece of information may help in the fault isolation process.it doesn't happen all the time, i would say about once every few months.my reaction on the break pedal is fast and it does stop the car.*tw

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact was pulling away from a stop sign, when she heard a thump in the gas tank. The contact spoke with the manufacturer and was advised that the thump was normal. The contact took the vehicle to an authorized dealer who tested the vehicle and found no failures. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 100. The current mileage was not available.

Dt*: the contact stated the check engine light illuminated while driving.the vehicle was inspected by a service dealer and released without identifying the problem.the vehicle was taken for service at the end of the trip where the dealership's mechanic informed the contact of the damage to the fuel line at the front left wheel well.the line was torn and hanging from the bracket mounting.the manufacturer was notified and claimed no responsibility due to possible road debris.updated 10/4/2006 -

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). Was driving on new jersey turnpike,at around exit 7 tried to avoid a car all of a sudden the car totally was uncontrollable , the brakes would not stop slow it down, ended up crashing against the jersey wall, backed up by itself and turned to face the traffic in the middle lane w/ the utmost effort finally stopped. My husband and i were injured and transported to hospital, when i complained to my insurance co. That what we experienced was beyond normal they suggested we should complain to toyota, we contacted toyota and complained asked them to investigate this occurrence and were assured that they will check the wrecked car. State farm insurance received my permission to release the car ,and documented the date of communication and the person at toyota in charge of this investigation but toyota is playing games or would not return our calls. This has happened before all the news reports about carpets and recalls. The irony is we went ahead and bought a 2009 toyota avalon that is how much we trusted this company. We both are still suffering from the injuries of this crash of the car that seemed to be ( possessed ) as i told my insurance adjustor. We do not know which way to go to prove our case and at this stage i am retracting my consent for toyota to inspect my car.i hope to hear from you [xxx].

While driving in town at about 25 mph, the car will accelerate by itself to 30mph, even if the accelerator is released. Pushing down on the accelerator has no effect. The acceleration is brief and stops by itself.this has happened several times over the last few weeks. Cruise control not engaged. The car computer was re-flashed at the dealer year to address to address sensitive accelerator issues.

Just heard of the lexus recalls about fuel leak problem. Toyota dealer found a fuel leak in my fuel line and i had to have it replaced. I just wanted to inform you just incase this is an issue with other toyota models..

The car a/c stopped functioning and i soon lost most of my oil. I was left on a sunday without much oil and had to get the car towed to the dealer. The replaced the oil line at no charge and luckily i had aaa towing insurance. I was out on the road without oil in the car!!!

Since owning a 2006 toyota avalon i have complained about this car surging & taking off. Floor matts are not a issue since the were removed on the drivers side last year.. Toyota tells me that they could not find a problem.this has happened several times, not just one time.

2006 toyota avalon gas pedal does not provide power until depressed over 50 percent travel then it suddenly provides power representative of half throttle.the check engine light flashes on and off when it does deliver powerunder this condition.on rare occasions when moving from stopped position the car accelerator is overly sensitive and acts like i just stomped onthe gas pedal and not the slow movement i gave te gas pedal to make a slow movement of the car.i have gotten used to the way it drives and it has been this way for the past 10 months.today the gas pedal has very little response to throttle response.i cannot drive it this way and having car towed to dealer for service.some days after driving over 30 minutes the car acts normally with exception of check engine light illuminated.

Two previous avalons (97&98) and the one identified here, did and does allow the key to be removed from the ignition with the car being in park. The danger is that the car will roll and could run over someone or into traffic and cause serious injury. My husband and i always reminded each other to put the car in park, but he is no longer with me and recently i started to get out of the car and it was on a slight incline and it started rolling while i was getting out. I have complained in the past to toyota, but they didn't believe me. A recent complaint brought the answer that the 36000 mile warranty doesn't apply to the repair. I understand that, but this is evidently a serious issue with avalons that toyota has refused to address, or my 2006 wouldn't have the same problem. We have almost always bought used cars and trucks and have never had a vehicle that would allow the key to be removed without being in park. You ask for a specific date at the end of this "step". It is ongoing so i have just put yesterdays date. The car was a gift in september of 2014.

2006 toyota avalon lxs driving home from vacation noticed noise when transmission shifted.got progressively worse as we approached home.checked oil next day. Engine empty of oil. Put oil in and leaked immediately out.oil line broken.no warning of engine trouble, no check engine light, no warning at all.had car tolled to repair shop.engine may be goner.

Hesitation from take off intermittent, transmission shudders on inclines. I would be pulling out into traffic and the car would barley move even with pushing down on the accelerator! then all of a sudden it will just take off! i'll be driving through they city and between 40 and 50 miles per hour the car shifts erratically

2006 avalon engine surged. Sent e-mail to toyota at that time. As i recall toyota response by e-mail was "we are not aware of any similar incidents" i still have a copy of the e-mail i sent.

During normal driving conditions vehicles transmissions hesitates shifting up or down between gears. Problem has been pointed out to toyota dealer in bowie, md, however, they claim they are unable to replicate the problem two toyota case # [xxx] and [xxx]. Also see site: fourwheeldrift.wordpress.com/2007/01/16/toyota-avalon-transmission. Ecm issue could cause vehicle to fail during normal driving condition when making turns or accelerating.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Ltr fm (fl) re the defective transmission in her 2006 toyota avalon.the vehicle was taken to the dealer over five times within in a six week period. The consumer stated the vehicle would hesitate and then surge forward when gently depressing the accelerator.the rear seat belt was defective and the front passenger air bag sensor didn't come on at theproper weight as described by the salesman.

S10 appropriate handling re toyota vehicle sudden acceleration problem, owner of a 2006 toyota avalon experienced acceleration problem.*tgwimmediately after purchasing the vehicle, the consumer noticed a problem in accelerating, decelerating and shifting gears in the transmission. Since the vehicle was still under warranty, he took the vehicle back to the dealer a few weeks later. The dealer informed the consumer there was no major problem and that a minor adjustment was made to the shifting points in the transmission. The vehicle functioned fine for a while, but then the same problems quickly resurfaced. A toyota representative stated the problem was not a defect; rather it was the way the vehicle was intended to handle due to its drive-by-wire system. The representative went on to say the drive-by-wire system did not have a traditional rod that connected the pedal to the engine; rather, the pedal went to an electronic system that sensed the intended acceleration and causes the engine to accelerate as directed by the driver. The consumer was told the hesitation he complained of was normal as the system was determining how much to accelerate. The consumer did not believe the sudden acceleration was due to a sticking pedal; rather a problem within the electronic transmission control module, throttle or onboard computer.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that she had problems with the transmission in her vehicle. The contact stated while driving 20 mph, the vehicle stalled when making turns and changing gears. The vehicle was repaired several times but the failure recurred. The contact stated when pressing theaccelerator pedal the vehicle was slow to respond. She pull the vehicle into a parking lot an had it towed to the dealer. The dealer informed that the ignition coil was damaged and needed to be repaired, the power steering needed to be flushed.the failure mileage was 27000.

Under hard acceleration while turning, you will experience loss of vehicle control. Ie, entering traffic from a cross street.

I have a 2006 toyota avalon.there is a serious problem with the transmission.at slow speeds the transmission seems to slip.if i am slowing almost to a stop and then starting up again the transmission does not engage, the engine revs up, and then the car lurches forward as the transmission finally engages.we have almost been rear ended when another car is following close and thinksthat i am going to move forward but can't because the transmission does not engage.i have almost had an accident because the car lurches forward after the trans slips.we have had this lurching and slipping incident several times.

Bought the car from aug 2005. The transmission problem is getting worse. Took few seconds to respond to downshift when step on the gas pedal, few times i almost got hit from behind because of that during heavy traffic.

Re: toyota 2006 avaloni recently bought a toyota avalon. It now has 3800 miles on it. In the second week after the purchase, i was driving on a ramp to enter a limited access high way. Speed was about 50 mph as i blended in with the flow of traffic. The lane i was in started to slow down and the lane to my left had an open space. I pressed on the accelerator to gain speed and turned the steering wheel toward the left lane. The car, instead of accelerating, appeared to go into neutral, the tachometer reached almost 7000 rpm, then the transmission shifted into the passing gear and leaped forward. I almost hit the rear end of the car in front of me, but since my car had slowed down a little i was able to steer around and get into the left lane. I have gone into this detailed explanation to demonstrate the danger, and potential terrible accident at 50mph that the ??built in?? hesitation of the 2006 toyota avalon could have caused. After this experience, i went back to the dealer, got the explanation that the hesitation was normal for 2006 toyota and nothing could be done about it. I told the dealer i did not want the car and wanted my money back. Of course that was refused.so i??m still driving a car i think is dangerous.i thinktoyota should make a retro fit to correct the hesitation problem.

I' had continuous problems since the first day of ownership, april 2006 with the transmission/linkage slipping/not engaging at slow speeds.itwas particularly noticeable when making turns, but also occurs when slowing down, and then attempting to speed up.attempts to have the problem repaired by the dealership have been unsuccessful; they refuse to acknowledge that there is even a problem!

Dt*:the contact stated while depressing the accelerator pedal, the transmission momentarily hesitates before properly selecting the correct gear to engage.this occurred at speeds of 5 mph and above.the vehicle was taken to the dealer several times for inspection.the dealer determined the electronic transmission software needed replaced.however, the manufacturer did not have aftermarket software available and no repairs were made. Updated 03/17/06.

I was on my way to the dealer for an oil change and to have our new (picked-up 26 jan 06) toyota avalon looked over as it had 3,500 miles.we live in the ozarks and of course it is very hilly.i normally use the "manual" mode on the automatic transmission to slow the car down as to descend the hills leading into and out of our sub-division.however, on 23 jun i just left it in the regular automatic mode and used the brakes.when i saw there was no on-coming traffic, i stepped on the accelerator to go---the rpm's jumped to over 3,000 and then the car lurched forward.thank goodness there was no on-coming traffic--i can only imagine what might have happened.i asked the dealer to check this occurrence out--they couldn't duplicate.since the first incident i've had the same thing happen on 4 separate occasions--always when left in the automatic mode and after you've slowed down and then press the accelerator to go.i've read on the www.edmunds.com website about others who've experienced the same thing.there is definitely something wrong and before a serious accident occurs toyota needs to fix the auto transmission problem.

The transmission poses safety problems because it is very uneven and unpredictable, shifting when you don't expect shifting, at lower and higher speeds and in cruise control.

Whenever i attempt to accelerate ,such as entering a highway from an on ramp the transmission will hesitate for a few seconds before speeding up. I understand other owners have also complained and toyota made corrections could not find it in your database.

I bought a 2006 toyota avalon in sept. '06. There is a serious problem with the transmission. At slow speeds the transmission slips. If i am slowing almost to a stop and then starting up again the transmission does not engage, the engine revs up, and then the car lurches forward as the transmission finally engages. We have almost been rear ended when another car is following close and thinks that i am going to move forward but can't because the transmission does not engage. I have almost had an accident because the car lurches forward after the trans slips. I also have to wait for a very large gap in traffic if i'm crossing a lane to make a left turn as i never know if the transmission will slip leaving me in the on-coming lane of traffic.we have had this lurching and slipping incident approximately 60% of the time. On two occasions when reaching speeds that would be shifting from 2nd to 3rd a very loud banging noise and lurching occurred. Unfortunately, on two visits to the dealer i was not able to recreate the problem.

- the contact stated that every time he completed a turn in the2006 toyota avalon ( with failure mileage: 5 miles at slow rate of speed under 20 mph, withthe foot on the accelerator pedal the vehicle would not accelerate.then, without any warning ,the transmission engaged and the vehicle jerked.the vehicle had been taken to the dealer, who stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and could not duplicate the problem.the current mileage was 22,109.

I own a 2006 avalon ltd.upon entering the on-ramp to route 23 in wayne, nj, i depressed the brake to slow the car.after confirming there was room to merge, i applied the gas and attempted to merge.i noticed and heard the tachometer surgebut the transmission did not engage.i lost my opportunity to merge and had to quickly apply the brakes.by then, the ramp lane had ended and i had to turn onto the shoulder to avoid hitting an oncoming car.i brought the vehicle to to the dealer who examined the car and stated that this was/is "normal operation when compared to other cars of this type".i opened a complaint file with toyota ((#20060719xxx...last 3 numbers left out intentionally).the transmission on this car continues to exhibit erratic behavior (transmission hesitation) under these same conditions (braking followed by acceleration).this situation significantly hinders my ability to safely operate my vehicle while merging into traffic.

At times the engine speed does not increase when the accelerator pedal is depressed. Such as when i stop at a red light and then try to accelerate when the light turns green and at times when i try to pass another vehicle and i cannot increase speed or when i slow down and then try to accelerate the vehicle does not accelerate as it should.

Dt*: the contact stated while accelerating at 10 mph, the automatic transmission was sluggish while shifting gears, and lurched forward without warning.the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who was unable to duplicate the problem.the manufacturer was alerted.updated 01/19/07.

The first week i owned the car i noticed a hesitation in the accelerator followed by a lurching forward.took it to dealer who said it was caused by the drive by wire system and would adjust to my driving in time.no adjustment occurred.i continued to make complaints to no avail until i threatened write to nhtsa.they then said "wait, don't do that.we'll talk to the service manager to see if he has a fix.within 30 minutes they had recalibrated the engine control module/ecm (sae term:powertrain control module/pcm).warranty information was:op code eg7023; description recalibrate emc (pcm);time 0.9;ofp 89661-#####; t1 26; t2 99.the results were good although i sometimes still feel almost undetectable small surges when i am driving as if i am not really controlling the speed with the accelerator.by the way, i had reported this twice before and when i read through all of the 2006 avalon reports mine was not there.are the reports deleted after a period of time?

I took my 2006 avalon in to nalley toyota for an oil line recall. I asked them if they could also look into the floor mat recall for me.they told me no decision had yet been made on the floor mat issue but went ahead with the oil line recall.i picked my car up that afternoon, drove 15 minutes to my mother's apartment.while slowly guiding my way into a parking place, my car accelerated violently propelling itself up over a curb and through a wooden fence, landing with my back tires on the front curb of the parking place.my braking had no effect and upon landing on the downside of the slope, my engine died.i called toyota immediately asking what they could have done to cause this to happen since my car had never had this happen before in the 4 years i hadit, and yet happened 15 minutes after they had worked on it.they said nothing was done that could have caused this.we complained to the area toyota rep and an inspector came and look at the car at the nalley repair shop we had it towed to.toyota says my car checks out fine and any problem was caused by the floor mats /driver.the serviceman did not advise me to remove the floor mats that were in place when they were working on the car.they released it to me with the floor mats in place.furthermore, i contend that the first thing i check after the sudden acceleration was the location of the floor mat, which was flat against the floor.

The transmission hesitates, jumps, and bucks and acceleration is very uneven. When accelerating from 0 mph (i.e. At a red light), the car hesitates, and then at approx. 20 mph, while keeping the gas pedal steady, the rpm's rev up, and the car accelerates wildly. When the transmission shifts at around 20mph, it feels like it shifts into a gear above what it should be. The car always feels like it is in the wrong gear. This causes problems when accelerating and braking and has caused numerous "close calls." the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and they made a minor adjustment to the shifting points in the transmission.updated 02/17/10.

This is just to pass along to you that i too have experienced that odd sensation of momentary acceleration while driving, but while letting off the accel pedal. On the handful of occassions when it has taken place, i believe i was always driving in heavy stop-and-go freeway traffic. Almost from the first day i leased the car, i have complained to friends that i thought my electonically-controlled transmission was "too smart"--that it thought it knew better how to drive the car than i did. I have a feather touch in my driving style, and i have not liked how the transmission is constantly trying to figure out if it wants to be shifting up or down in heavy traffic. Now, with the recent media coverage, i am wondering if the issue is broader and could be part of the unintended acceleration issue?

I was driving slowly around a rotary, and took my foot off accelerator to drift a bit to allow a preceding car to enter. When i pressed the gas pedal gently, there was a sudden violent kick which frightened both me and my wife. (i believe the transmission had shifted in low, but it was as if we had been hit in the rear with a large slapping hand!)i had to react quickly to avoid being driven into the car ahead by this sudden small burst of speed.an accident could easily have otherwise taken place.the transmission has always been erratic at times since we purchased the car, butthis was the worst thing that has happened.i have had the latest computer upgrade on this problem installed, andit was within 1 day after that this took place. I had read all of the nhtsa safety reports on this car, and there have been many similar. In my mind there is a serious safety problem which needs addressing. (a similar but much less violent series of incidents have occurred when in cruise control going somewhat uphill, when it downshifts and the car speeds upnoticeably and in some casesso much so that i have to take it out of cruise for a bit) such unpredictability makes both mywife and i feel unsafe in this car at those times.

2006 toyota avalon. At low speeds, especially after slowing, the transmission acts as if it were in neutral, and severely hesitates, when an attempt is made to accelerate. Dealer says it's normal. There are years of complaints all over the web. I can't believe that some have not been rear-ended or struck when attempting to accelerate into traffic from a highway entrance ramp. Toyota should be forced to redo the programming of the responsible computer chip or replace the chip with one that has a faster clock speed. They should also be held legally responsible for all incidents. The date below is for the latest of near daily, usually minor failures like slowing to turn a corner.

The transmission acts erratically at low speeds. If i am rolling through a stop sign or just in traffics at 5-10 mph the transmission will "hunt" for a gear. Sometimes it is a hesitation and sometimes it jerks into gear, depends on how much trottle you apply.if i am stop turn right on red, have plenty of time to make a turn before an approaching car arrives, if the transmission is hunting for a gear, i have no control of the car. It might be only for 1 or 2 seconds, but it is dangerous.repeated service trips, service manangers and even district manager has failed to get anyones' attention.check out this web site, here are 44 people with similar problems:http://fourwheeldrift.wordpress.com/2007/01/16/toyota-avalon-transmission-problems-expose-toyotas-problem-reporting-problems/

2006 toyota avalon transmission hesitates at 0-35 mph, especially in stop and go traffic.it has nearly caused accidents.i need help because toyota is not acknowledging this problem.this is a big safety issue.

Transmission hesitates excessively when automatically downshifting at speeds below 10 mph. This has happened every day and every downshift from the first day of ownership.terrible condition that no one at toyota is willing to admit or fix. Wtf?

Transmission hesitation when accelerating from a braking situation.transmission delay impairing ability to merge or safely change lanes.repeated occurrences since may 2006.car is once again in shop for inspection.

I have a 2006 toyota avalon. I took it in a few weeks ago to have the accelerator recall problem "fixed". Today (3/14), i was traveling thru a shopping center parking lot at 10 to 12 mph. As i touched the brake, the car started to accelerate, grinding thru the brakes. I pushed it into neutral and jammed the brake. There was a very loud "thunk" and the car stopped and ceased trying to accelerate.

I purchased a 2006 toyota avalon on 24 dec 2005. On a number of occasions when i come to a stop, no matter what the speed is the rpm will rev up to about 2000 rpm. I have a very hard time stopping the car. It is a very scary situation & dangerous position i am in. This does not happen every time i drive the car. My wife is afraid to drive it now.i took it to the dealer & they could not find anything wrong with the car. What are my options?

Transmission randomly fails to downshift when accelerator depressed half-to-full to gain speed quickly for merging into traffic, etc.at times, downshift simply does not occur, other times there is a one-to-two second hesitation before the downshift/acceleration occurs.

I'm an owner of a 2006 toyota avalon and i'm curious if the electronic transmission has been investigated as a cause of the accelerator issue?i purchased this car as a new car and within 2 weeks i returned o the dealer to have the transmission checked.at this point it lagged when downshifting or seemed to be continuously searching for the appropriate gear.i was told that he computer had to learn our driving style and the issue would go away.it has never gone away, and it seems to have gotten worse over time.i have 60,000 miles on this car.

Purchased a certified, used 2006 toyota avalon touring model on july 15, 2006.within the first week of ownership, i noticed a serious hesitation in the transmission, especially at speeds below 10 mph.i took the vehicle to koons toyota dealership on july 8, 2006 and had the service department shop foreman, drive the vehicle.he confirmed that the transmission was indeed hesitating and that this was a problem for 2004-2006 toyota siennas, avalons and camrys that share the same 5-speed automatic transmission.chris told me that the computer that selects the appropriate gear based on various criteria analyzed by the system is too slow in processing this information, which in turn causes the hesitation and rpm surge before a gear is engaged.i lodged a complaint with toyota today (case number 200608090063), and was told that the "corporate line" is that the transmission is behaving as was intended.the dealer told me this issue can be fixed by a reprogramming of the computer or replacing the chip with a "faster" version.obviously, this is a terribly dangerous situation that toyota needs to address.

The problem seems related to the powertrain control module problem never occurs when the vehicle is cold or from a stopped position.problem is not consistent on average occurring once a day description of problem: in parking lot or after lot of low speed driving form traffic problem occurs?.. Accelerate the rpms race on the tach and the speedometer is out of sink there is a delayed response a shudder, shift timing feels off kilter, erratic hunting, then a harsh forward this may be a one time event or several in succession and then returns to normal shifting pattern 2- cruising 30 mph problem occurred gave it some gas... Tach shot to 4k delayed forward engaging then the car drove itself for 1/4 mile without me touching the accelerator 2006 toyota avalon.

I have a safety concern with the brakes slow to stop. I have replaced them i think twice through toyota. But the issue never seem to totally go away. Below is the issue showing i am not the only one with this safety problem. But toyota refuse to acknowledge this problem is real even with the campaign on it.report receipt date: oct 21, 2010 nhtsa campaign number: 10v499000 component(s): service brakes, hydraulic toyota is recalling certain model year 2005-2006 avalon,a leak of brake fluid could lead to a change in brake pedal feel and overtime a degradation in braking performance increasing the risk of a crashresolve for me would be: dealers will replace the seal with a newly designed one. This service will be performed free of charge.

On april 17, 2012 bayside toyota replaced the brake master cylinder seal on the avalon under recall# 10v499000. Almost exactly 3 years later on april 18, 2015 the brake master cylinder seal failed as i was backing the car out of my garage. I was able to use my parking brake to stop the vehicle. Toyota claims that although the original seal never failed after 6 years of service it was replaced because it was a safety concern. The new seal failed after 3 years and toyota claims it is only covered by a 12 month component warranty and is an "inconvenience" but not a safety issue. Toyota gave me a case number but said there was nothing else they could do. Had i been driving the car at full speed the results would have been catastrophic. I am having the car repaired at my own cost but i have no faith that the brake system is safe.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed with extreme force but the vehicle failed to stop. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the master cylinder was leaking and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 10v499000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.

Right front caliper froze; did not retract piston. No braking as a result of brake pads destroyed..after repair in 2012,same caliper again froze and required identical repair in april of 2015 at 58,000 miles.

When the vehicle is about to come to a full stop the brake feels like it push back towards me. It almost feel like the car is not going to stop.i brought the car to the dealership. The mechanic observe the same issue but was unable to determine the cause.

I had started driving and all of a sudden the vehicle accelerated. I applied brakes and had difficulty stopping it.i took the vehicle to a toyota dealership and they could not find the cause of the acceleration. They suggested to call toyota corporation and provided me with a 800 number. I told the rep of the problem and she informed me that the acceleration problem was resolved and new mats were issued to the customers. I acknowledged that the vehicle in 2010 was checked by toyota and issued mats. I have not had any problems after that time but in march 2014, the acceleration started again. She said the issue is resolved and settled. I am concerned whether the acceleration problem was not what toyota pinpointed and told us the problem was resolved. Why is this problem occurring after 4 years?what steps can be taken to ensure safety in driving this vehicle?

Sept. 27, 2009, i was driving my 2006toyota avalon into my garage at a slow speed.when i hit the brake, the car accelerated causing me to drive into the workbench, braking it and some wallboardbehind it as well as damaging the car before the car finally came to a stop.

2006 toyota avalon - during first year of ownership, vehicle engine revved strongly while applying the brake while going about 30 mph. The car sounded like it waned to go 60 mph or more and leached, but i was able to stop it by pressing harder on the brake.this happened on 2 or 3 occasions. At first i thought i was just not use to the vehicle and hit the brake and gas pedal together, but i had serious doubts. I now realize i was experiencing the current problem. It only happened during the first year of driving and has not happened to me since. I doubt this was due to a stuck pedal, but some electronic issue is at fault (perhaps the cruise control system).

The contact owns 2006 toyota avalon. While driving 65 mph on cruise control the vehicle continued braking on its own. The contact deactivated the cruise control because the brakes continued to engage on their own. When the cruise control was turned off, the vehicle surged forward and almost hit a another vehicle. Two weeks ago the contact surged forward while driving 30 mph. She took the vehicle to the dealer and suggested that it was the computer in the vehicle. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated that the computer did not have any problems. The contact stated that her steering wheel became stiff several times and the dealer stated that there was nothing wrong with her power steering. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 35000 and the current mileage was 42800.

I am writing this for my brother who is the legal owner of the vehicle. (2006 toyota avalon) he had regular maintenance at laurel carmax toyota on july 30th,2009. (including brake and fluid change) in sepetember 7th, he was driving on the road and the brake light turned on. He immediately lost brake and tried to pull over the road in order to stop the car. He took his car to the nearby bodyshop and they found his brake fluid reservoir was empty. They refilled the fluid at the body shop. Few days later, he brought his car back to toyota dealership to request what's going on with his car. Since he just got brake/fluid change, this issue should not happen. Toyota said they need to "exam" the car first and found out the master cylinder and booster are bad with leaking. The exam cost around $270 and they will charge $1250 for repair the master cylinder and booster. The car has 39000 miles (2 years and 9 months) that is probably not covered under warranty. I just cant believe for being a 2 yrs 9 months old toyota, how can its brake system just failed like that? my brother was lucky that he was able to stop the car and didn't get hurt. I think toyota needs to do something about this issue.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving approximately 30 mph over rough surfaces, bumps or potholes and trying to depress the brake pedal, the contact heard a grinding noise and the brakes did not respond. He stated that it felt as if the brakes were rubbing metal-to-metal; however, the brakes responded normallyafter he drove over the rough or bumpy surface. The failure occurred approximately 5 to 6 times. The dealer and manufacturer have not been notified. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current mileage was approximately 150,000. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

My wife left work and experienced braking problems, had to pump brakes to stop. A few hundred feet later she came to an intersection and applied the brakes, which did not work. She rolled into the intersection with oncoming traffic. To avoid being t - boned she accelerated and ran off an ajacent roadway striking trees. The car was totalled, and she and my two sons had to be extricated from the vehicle, suffering only minor injuries. Her actions to protect herself and my children resulted in the collision, avoiding a river with high rapid running water.

On april 17, 2012 bayside toyota replaced the brake master cylinder seal on the avalon under recall# 10v499000. The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving atapproximate speeds of 20-30 mph, the contact applied the brakes but they did not engage. The vehicle proceeded to crash into the rear of another vehicle. Two of the vehicle occupants were injured and a police report was filed accordingly. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where repairs were made to the front body damage. The failure mileage was 11,382 and the current mileage was 32,000. Updated 07/19/10. *ljupdated 09/21/10

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The vehicle was included in recall 10v499000 (service brakes, hydraulic: foundation components: master cylinder). The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the parts would not be available for two weeks. The vehicle had not been repaired. The vin was unavailable. The current and failure mileages were approximately 53,000.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon limited. When the contact attempted to make a left turn with his foot on the brake pedal the rpms increased, the vehicle continued to accelerate into the intersection. He engaged the brakes with extreme pressure, turned the engine off and placed the vehicle in park. He restarted the vehicle and it functioned normally. The contact stated that this was the first and only time the failure occurred.the vehicle was taken to the dealer on march 26, 2011. The dealer was unable to locate the failure but modified the brake cylinder. The contact stated that he filed a complaint with the manufacturer. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 9,500 and the current mileage was 9,590.updated 05/04/11 updated 1/11/11

I owned a 2006 toyota avalon.while driving on mountain road, as i rounded a curve, my car seemed to surge.a dog crossed in front of me as i came into the curve.i slammed on brakes and could not get car to stopi spun out of control and hit the bank on every corner of car as well as head on.car finally came to rest about 150 yards from where i began braking.i was shaken up but not hurt.i am now convinced my gas pedal stuck or something electronically happened.my husband asked me what happened and i told him i honestly could not explain what happened.my vehicle was a total loss and my insurance paid; however, i purchased a 2007 avalon and i am extremely nervous living here in the mountains and driving this car.i don't have vin or mileage handy but can get info from my insurance agent if necessary.

2006 toyota avalon. Consumer writes to express views regarding toyota incidents *tgwthe consumer stated he was sold a defective demo vehicle. The entire brake system had to be replaced as well as the tires due to premature wear. The windshield wipers did not clear the windshield properly and the brake light illuminated right after the consumer left the dealership. The consumer returned to the dealership only to be told there was no brake fluid in the reservoir.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The failure occurred twice. The second time, the vehicle accelerated through a stop sign. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians stated the accelerator pedal and brakes needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated she did not feel comfortable driving the vehicle after repairs. The approximate failure mileage was 28,000.

Consumer states unintended acceleration *tgwthe consumer stated while stopped at a light with his foot on the brake, the engine suddenly revved up and the vehicle accelerated half way into the intersection. He kept his foot on the brake as hard as possible.he was able to put the gear in park and shut off the engine. When the light turned green, he restarted the engine with no problems.the vehicle was taken to the dealer the next day where the they performed a modification to the brake master cylinder.

My 2006 toyota avalon steering wheel was getting stuck when i turned the car on. I would have to have to try and turn the wheel in order for it to release. Additionally the car was leaking fluid. On september 23, 2010 i brought the car into thetoyota dealer who identified the problem as "steering rack leaking from right side causing subframe to be wet with power steering fluid. Replace the steering rack and align". So at a cost of $1338.85 the steering rack was replaced.i agree thatthis is a problem that toyota should have issued a recall to fix since they knew about it since 2004 and have issued various service bulletins on subject.on january 7, 2012 i brought the car back to the toyota dealership because i am still experiencing an oil leak that has gotten worse. I have brought the car in numerous times for this issue with no resolution. Now they are telling me that there is a leak at two return hosed in the power steering column and are charging $500 for replacement and repair. So now in a year and half i have spent approximately $2000 to repair the steering on a fairly new car. Why has there not been a recall for this 2006 avalonsteering issue. Apparently toyota has never rectified the problem with the steering and continues to make money on substandard, dangerous products. This is the seventh toyota that i have owned and the only one that i have had problems with and recalls for. You would think that for the cost of this car, you would get better quality. I may have to reconsider buying toyotas in the future if this is the quality of car they are producing. This is not the only issue that i have had to date.i have also gone on-line and researched this issue and have found that there are many 2006 toyota avalon owners experiencing the same issue.

Steering was binding on my 2006 toyota avalon under slow speed right hand turns.dealer acknowledged this as a known safety issue with multiple toyota models but refused to cover any of the cost of repairs.

Issue:after a period of approximately 2,000 driven miles, the locking device on the telescoping steering column will loosen to the point where it becomes fully disengaged.the vehicle is driven with the telescoping column fully extended and the driver is unaware of when the locking device has become disengaged.during hard braking situations the driver naturally applies support pressure to the steering column causing the disengaged steering column to fully collapse.this sudden and unexpected collapse of the steering column causes the driver an additional concern and an emergency reaction, up to and potentially including the loss of vehicle control, to an already hazardous situation (hard braking). The above incident has happened on several occasions over an extended period of time.reporting:this incident has been reported to the toyota dealer at every scheduled 5,000 mile check up for at least the last 2+ years.this issue is not new and at my request the service agent continues to add the issue to the service order.toyota response;toyota service personnel state that they can not address the issue since they can not replicate the issue. As was stated above the issue occurs after approximately 2,000 driven miles. How toyota expects to replicate 2,000 driven miles by driving the vehicle around the parking lot is absolutely unbelievable to any reasonable person. Two months of driving can not be condensed into 10 minutes.for safety issues, especially for one consistently reported over a period of years, to be dismissed after a 10 minute cursory inspection or none at all, is beyond willful neglect and is evident that toyota's safety culture has not improved.the issue within toyota remains unreported, unacknowledged and unresolved.

I have the same problem with my 2006 avalon xls.the steering column will suddenly collapse.

Power steering pump leaking. Told by dealer it will need to be replaced.

This event occurred twice during routine driving.my 2006 toyota avalon seemed to have some difficulty straightening the steering wheel out after a turn.

Issues i've complained about for year to toyota only to find out now toyota was aware of them all along there were recalls & service bulletin. That should have covered my toyota issue the information below came from sites toyota issued this warning too. The recall for steering column was on 2005 mine is a early model 2006 with the exact same safety issue. The resolve for me is that toyota fix the vehicle and not try and hold me responsible for half the cost as the are now doing. 2006 toyota avalon limited - telescopic steering column collapses under normal driving conditions.

Had to replace entire rack and pinion assembly

In july 2010 i took my 2006 toyota avalon to waldorf toyota for the 60,000 service and reported a problem with my steering sticking when turning left.this problem occurs randomly.the problem was diagnosed as an alignment needed to correct the problem which i had them perform.however, after approximately a week and half i experienced the same problem.i returned the car again in early august 2010 but was informed that the problem could not be duplicated, consequently the car was not repaired. Fast forward to august 2011, more than another year later, i am still experiencing the same problem and the same explanation from the dealership that the problem could not be duplicated so there has not been resolution.this is a serious safety concern as when the steering sticks a very quick response is needed to correct the direction that you would like the vehicle go while in the middle of the turn.i never know when i will be surprised with this unfortunate situation.i am disappointed with toyota and concerned for my safety.

I have begun to notice a clunking noise when turning the steering wheel at low speeds, going forward or in reverse.i am now reading about this happening to other avalon 2006 owners.the car has 35,000 miles on it and this started showing up at around 30k.at first i thought it was the brake pads knocking, but i'm almost certain it is the steering shaft from what others are describing.it goes in the shop tomorrow for the vvt oil recall fix and i will discuss this unacceptable and perhaps dangerous condition with the toyota service department.

My 2006 toyota avalon(touring) has a loud knocking/clunking noise when turning steering wheel at low speeds. Dealer said this was a problem with the 2006 avalons and can be fixed by replacing the steering column at a cost of $700-800. Car had 42k miles just out of warranty and offered no toyota help until i told him i had an extended warranty with toyota repair was made. 15k-20k later ,same problem. Second steering column replaced.15k-20k later..same problem..dealer lub the linkage,15k-20k later same problem, dealer lub the linkage again. At 98000,same problem,my toyota warranty had expired at 96k and the dealer wanted$800 to replace the steering column, his cost amount.area toyota repr.said it was not a safety issue ,more of a nuisance factor. Should be a toyota recall to find the fix. Just replied to atoyota survey. Have not replaced the steering column..waiting for an update on the survey. Likely will not be contacted.

Telescoping steering wheel collapses while driving creating hazardous condition.friction release doesn't stay locked, and driver must check it regularly while driving.

Steering column telescoping lever drops during normal driving.fully down (although not visible through steering column) within 2-3 hours driving.leaves steering wheel with free play during operation.safety issue.

The steering column telescopic adjustment lever has "slipped out of its locked position" for at least several years. This is the problem that toyota just issued the "warranty enhancement" for, and while i am grateful for that, i resent their saying "...the majority of vehicles will not experience this condition." from what i understand from other avalon owners, this is not an isolated problem.

I started to notice a clunk when i turned the wheel to the left which i though t was unusual. It concerned me that it sounded like a worn linkage or ball joint and the car had only 21,000 mile on it. Who informed me that there had been a bad lot of a steering linkage part put on certain avalons that they couldn't identify. Therefore, norecall which disturbed me. I though toyota was known for outstanding quality! the car now has 26,300 miles and there have been no further issues.

I was experience what i believed to be a "sticky" steering wheel.i first noticed it in december of 2009.in 2010, i went to toyota numerous times about this issue but they said that they couldn't look in to it because 1. It was intermittent and 2. "like looking for a needle in a haystack".i saved the paperwork of where i had came to the dealership complaining of such issue which proved to be fruitful when toyota issued a recall about the problem in july. I took my car back to the dealership the next day with my papers stating my previous inquires.still they were unable to do anything because toyota had not issued any fixes to the dealerships. There were numerous times i felt like the car would not come out of a turn.i have since sold my 2006 toyota avalon.one good thing is that though my local dealership was unable to reach corporate to get guidance on the issue, they opened up a case number to bring it to toyota's attention that this problem was occurring in a 2006 model and the owner had proof that she had been complaining about the issues months before a recall was issued.

Unintentional and unexpected unlocking of the telescopic steering column while driving causing potential loss of control of the vehicle.

The telescoping steering column lock loosens during normal driving.usually the lock lever only drops low enough to hit your knees as you exit the car after a drive, but does not loosen enough to release the column telescope. Today it dropped all the way down while i was driving and the column (which i have fully extended normally) collapsed forward (compressed). I lost some vehicle control as i reached down to secure the handle upward. This seems to be a friction device and has no positive locking detent.my wife and daughter have more trouble with it than i do as they cannot force it up as far, so it releases more often.a poor and dangerous design. The dealer wants $79 just to look at it. We have gotten into the habit of checking the lock frequently but whenever we forget it will release the telescope and collapse the wheel unexpectedly after about 2 hours of highway driving.we bought the car new.it is happening about once a week now if we forget to check it. My wife is 65 and does not have the strength to tighten it fully now.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while driving approximately 65-70 mph on normal road conditions, the steering wheel dropped downward unexpectedly.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection.the vehicle exceeded the mileage under the warranty coverage and has not been repaired.the failure mileage was 12,000 and current mileage was 44,000. The consumer stated the vehicle was equipped with tilt steering and telescoping steering. While driving, the pressure arm under the steering column which held the telescoping column in place became loose due to a vibration.updated 02/24/09.

2006 toyota avalon, telescopic steering adjustment loosens by itself causing the steering to move unexpectedly..40k miles

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact was driving approximately 70 mph when without warning ,the steering wheel column unlocked in a downward motion, causing the steering wheel to travel towards the instrument panel. Immediately the contact reduced speed and attempted to correct the steering wheel failure. The contact cautiously drove to the side of the road to re-lock the steering wheel. The vehicle resumed normal operation. The failure occurred four times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the failure. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

My 2006 toyota avalon xls exhibits loud knocking noise when turning steering wheel at low speeds.dealer said this is a problem with the 2006 avalon and can be fixed by replacing the steering column at a cost of $911.this is a problem that toyota should have issued a recall to fix since they knew about it since 2004 and have issued various service bulletins on subject.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving at aspeeds of 60 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and the steering column began to move towards the dashboard. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer advised repairs would be at the expense of the owner. The approximate failure mileage was 30,500 and the current was 31,000.

Steering column in 2006 avalon exhibits pulsing ratchet type vibration and noise.most severe when turned at lower speeds.

Steering wheel clunks during acceleration, braking, and rotating the steering wheel from side to side.vehicle was brought into the dealer for which they indicated that the "steering intermediate shaft" had failed and so they replaced it.while picking up the car, i had asked to examine the old shaft and noted corrosion and wear on one of the splines.the car only had 16,500 miles on it.if the splines were completely worn, the steering of the vehicle would be compromised.the dealer indicated that toyota had a fix to this already, but there is no recall.this should be a safety recall.

Steering vibrations and clicks when turning steering wheel to the right at low speeds.

(1) heavy braking to avoid a collision leads up to the ongoing failures(2) failure is the friction lock for the telescoping steering wheel slowly releases during normal stop and go driving and after a period of time, a heavy application of the brakes will cause the steering wheel to collapse inward resulting in near loss of control of the automobile.(3) the car has been taken to the dealer twice.the first time the dealer could not duplicate the problem and indicated that the driver was improperly locking the steering wheel telescope lock.the second time the car was taken to the dealer, the dealer again could not duplicate the problem and after the owner of the car showed them what causes the lock to come undone they refused to repair stating that the problem is "you are driving with the steering fully telescoped and even a brand new avalon would do the same thing".the dealer said "this must not be the car for you since you must drive with the steering fully extended". We have approximately 24,000 miles.the problem first began appearing at about 19,000 miles.

2006 toyota avalon. Consumer states problem with power steering pumps *tgwthe consumer stated the power steering pump was leaking. On feburary 7, 2009 the power steering pump was replaced under warranty.in june 2010, while the vehicle was being serviced, the mechanic pointed out that the power steering pump was leaking again and needed to be replaced. The consumer contacted the dealer who originally replaced the pump in 2009. They informed the consumer, the power steering pump was only under warranty for 12 months and they could not replace it without charging him for the repairs.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that the dashboard developed cracks and became sticky to the touch. The contact stated that it appeared to be melting. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 5,000 and the current mileage was 11,000. ..updated 08/11/14

Defective vinyl dashthis car has 48,305 miles and has almost always been garaged. It was purchased new in march of 2006. Recently, about july of 2013, when i first started noticing it, the complete dash of this car has become covered in a very sticky, shiny substance. No sealers, polishes or waxes have ever been applied to it, only cleaned with a damp rag. Not only is this toyota defect affecting the value of this car it has become a safety issue. The glare the shine on the dash creates makes it almost impossible to see out of the windshield. I have seen many other toyota avalon and camry owners complain of this defect. I believe toyota should be held responsible for the replacement of these defective dashboards.

2006 toyota avalon. Hinges on bar in trunk that holds the trunk open broke off innovember 2009 (right after warranty expired). If you don't hold the trunk open with one hand it can slam down on you. Already have had it slam down on my head, arm and son's arm. Very painful, nice big bruises and mild concussion. Took it to toyota and they were not very helpful at the end 2009 and then again in august 2010 and was told that i would have to pay at least $500.00 to get it fixed.ionly use the trunk now if i have someone else with me as it is hard to hold open with one hand while loading and unloading groceries. Would not recommend this car to anyone.

Dashboard cracked from one side to the other, cracked all up by the instrument board, down by the compartment. Just appeared one day. Car in garaged. Toyota dealer acknowledge it that they are having a problem with quite a few vehicles. Toyota wants me to pay $500 towards replacing the dash. I feel it is a defect, obviously, on their part and should not have to pay to have it replaced. Can it be a safety hazard? maybe if it is cracked around where the dash air bag is.

Cracks all across dashboard and glovebox.afraid it might affect air bag deployment.

Dash board and air bag front area n thee front began to crack. Car has never been housed outside a garage andi can see where the material should begin to crack. It has been properly moist and clean. Now it is extending thru the front area even more. I have the same problem with a toyota 2004 solara it started about the same time. Same housing and care applies here too.the 2004 model hadabout 50000 when it started to crack the material.

Toyota avalon 2006 has a protruding piece cylinder in the mid-section of the trunk that has a cutout with an extremely sharp edge.it cut my finger when putting groceries in my trunk and my daughter's friend when removing luggage.this could be very serious for diabetics and caused significant cuts for both of us.

The car has always been garaged and cracks in the dashboard are showing everywhere. The are getting more numerous and wide.

Dashboard developed a small crack which is now about 36" long.toyota will not do anything about it. They will replace the dash for $2000+.there are hundreds of similar complaints on the same vehicle online.

Failure of the hinges and torsion bars that are mounted for the trunk lid of my 2006 toyotaavalon, limited. The torsion bar rotates into the trunk space about 5 inches and can hit items in the trunk and dislodge thetorsion bar and damage a weak mounting bracket. This failure is not graceful but immediate. Upon opening the trunk with the torsion bar dislodged or the bar becomes dislodged the trunk can come back and hit you in the heador a child being held. I notified the dealer and toyota of the problem and was told that it was covered under the 36000/ 3yr warranty which i exceeded. However, after several more contacts i was able to determine that there was a technical service bulletin bo030-06 issued in december 2006. My concern is that there was never any warning on limiting the useful space in the trunk nor any notification of the potential failure. My concern is that toyota new about this safety issue and was reluctant to acknowledge the problem and that there was a potential fix that may or may not be sufficient. No corrective action was provided.

Another driver lost control while driving west on icy roads and hit me, i was driving east on ne lombard..in results of my toyota avalon being deamed totaled. Dealership is out of business and owes the bank $454.10 for warranty refund.

I have called toyota in houston, tx several times about my melting and cracking dashboard.i was told this was normal wear and tear.my car is garaged, and only out for short amounts of driving time.on december 31, 2014,i saw on the national nbc news that there is a recall for the dashboard problems.i called toyota this morning, jan. 2, 2015, and was told they know nothing about a recall.i must have a letter for them to due recall work.i'd like to file this complaint, hoping my car, make and model will be added so that i receive a recall notice.thank you.

Please help

Dashboard is cracking rapidly and toyota isn't standing behind this defect. Concerned about flying parts if the airbags would deploy. Car is mainly kept in the garage and i vent to let the leather breathe. This is apparently a defect from the manufacturer.

I slowed to pull into a parking space on the roof of parking garage. I tapped my brake and felt a sudden surge of power. (noisy powersound) i forcefully pushed down on the brakes and burned rubber making visible skid marks. The car went over both the cement bumper in front of my car and the cementbumper of the facing car and came to a stop when it hit his car. Both cars sustained major damage to the front.i was not injured and no one was in the car i hit. It is fortunate that this did not occur at a stop with pedestrians.

The heating element on the passanger side mirror overheated "cooking" the glass on the mirror (adding a smoky dark gray cast) that reduces visibility especially at night.

Multiple cracks developed on the dashboard

I rear endedcar and the lower airbag deployed striking me just below by knees. My right leg developed a hematoma from the airbag deployment and required surgery. I still have a large depressed area on my leg, a scar, tenderness and darkening of the skin, all which will require further surgery to repair.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while driving over a bump at 20 mph, the contact heard a loud knocking sound.a mechanic stated that the front driver's side coil spring fractured and needed to be replaced.the vehicle was repaired and the manufacturer was notified.the vin was unavailable.the failure mileage was 124,000.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving approximately 40 mph, a loud thumping noise was heard in the rear of the vehicle. The contact opened the trunk and found that the torsion bar was detached from the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torsion bar needed to bereplaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that a repair would be done; however, it was not considered a recall repair. The approximate failure mileage was 35,000.

---buyers beware.--- tires purchased:215/55r-17 continental purecontact ls sl purchased these tires on tire rack and had them professional placed on by firestone personnel (appropriate tire pressure checked). In just a little over a month, less than 100 miles, and without any trauma (no potholes, curbs, etc), the rear passenger tire had a major, sidewall blowout on the highway (70 mph) with near catastrophic consequences. Continental will not allow a refund but will only permit me to purchase tires in their lineupaccording to their 60 day policy. However, this should be an exception due to the near miss that could have caused serious bodily harm or death. I do not trust these tires given the extensive damage from such little usage (please see photos). They have denied any claim of defect in their tires but i am perplexed on how such extensive damage to a tire can happen without any trauma or inciting event. Please don't put your family or loved ones in harm's way and highly consider an alternative brand of tire than general or continental.

The traction control system in our 2006 toyota avalon will not allow the car to drive in snow.once a wheel starts to slip the brake is applied and the car will not move.as we live in colorado this is a serious problem.

Toyota company refuse to honor my complaint that i did not receive any letters regarding a recall on my 2006 toyota avalon. Toyota company states that the recall on my 2006 avalon has expired. Toyota company stated they mail out a recall letter to my address in 2015 and 2017. I did not receive the letter atmy address. I live in a mobile home park where its about 30 mobile homes is located with the address, except the lot number is different. I search through my mail to double check and i do not have any letters regarding a recall. I called last year (2018) because i notice several splitting line across the dash board of my car dashboard and it has a sticky feeling by touching. I have read several emails stating "accordingly, per websites on recall there is no time limit on getting a recall fixed, and most dealers should honor the recall and fix your car free of charge. The only exception is if your vehicle is older than ten years at the time of the recall, the dealer may not fix the vehicle for free. Regardless, you should still make the necessary changes or contact the automaker directly and let them know of your predicament".my predicament is i do not want anything to happen and i cannot afford to pay the cost to replace the dashboard. All i want is for them to realize that my defect for the recall did not show until last year. I get my car service every year and there was no visible defect on the dashboard.

Electric rear window sun screen is stuck in the up position. This reduces visibility especially at night. When vehicle is place into reverse the motor tries to lower the shade but fails. I have seen many similar complaints on the edmunds forum. Since the average avalon owner is 65 years of age the reduced visibility at night is greater risk due to the reduced night vision based on the owners age.

Dashboard cracking in two places.our 2006 dashboard is cracking in two places, area by drivers door and in the place where the passenger air bag is located. Our 2008 did the same thing and toyota replaced the whole dsah but our 2006 is too old to be covered.we're concerned that once the crack goes all the way through the compartmnt where the sir bag is that it will bust open hit the passenger in the face.

Dash board is cracking

2006 abalone with 63,000 miles, while i was driving in the highway my ac light flickered, then check engine light came on. I opened the hood there was no oil in the engine and the left side of the engine was covered with engine oil. There was a leak in the vvt oil line. Toyota issued a tech tip tv12310 in septemberof 2008 recommending replacement of the oil line, but there was no recall on it . I have no idea if my engine survived this incident it is still in the shop waiting for estimate .

I have a toyota avalon that had a defected oil pipe.my car started leaking oil due to this defect, when i took the car to the dealership they were aware of the problem and new of the defect in avalons and camrys at that time the part was on backorder for 3 weeks.all the people that i know who own a avalon 2006 to 2009 have had the same problem. When i reported it to toyota corporate the customer service person said they wer not aware of an issue.when i called the dealer prior to bring the car in they what the issue was when i described what the car was doing.at that time i did not know who to report this defect to.

My drivers seatbelt did not work.

The dashboard has become very shiny, sticky, and cracked due to high heat and humidity living in the southeast us. When the sun hits the dashboard, it creates a reflection that blocks the view of the driver. That is my concern for safety. I have researched and found millions of other owners are affected by this same issue. Toyota needs to stick by their claim to care about the safety of their customers and remedy this issue.

2006 toyota avalon.consumer writes in regards to vehicle remote starting device.smdthe consumer stated her parents purchased a new vehicle back in 2006. The vehicle came equipped with a keyless remote starting system. All it took, was to have the device in ones pocket and her father could get in the vehicle, press a button and the vehicle would start up. When her father arrived at his destination, all he had to do was,put the vehicle in park, press the remote button and the engine would shut off. On june 28, 2012, when the consumers father returned home, he parked the vehicle in the garage and went in the house. Hours later, the consumers father was found deceased in the house from carbon monoxide poisoning.the smell of the poisonous gas was overwhelming throughout the house because after her dad took his packages out of the car and into the house, he closed the garage, and never shut off the remote starter button. From morning all through the day, carbon monoxide slowly seeped in the kitchen where the garage was attached, through the kitchen and into the den where her dad was sitting. The consumer stated had there been an automatic shut off system that activated after a preset time, when there was no weight in the driver's seat, much like the air bags on the passenger side, this senseless tragedy would have never occurred.

Another driver lost control while driving west on icy roads and hit me, i was driving east on ne lombard..in results of my toyota avalon being deamed totaled. Dealership is out of business and owes the bank $454.10 for warranty refund.

While driving down the freeway in my 2006 toyota avalon limited, i reached down on the left side of the dashboard to activate a shade screen for the back window in order to defray glare from headlights and i pressed the trunk button by mistake. (which is located very near by) the trunk opened while i was driving caused me to divert my attention from the road momentarily trying to figure out what had happened.i feel that this is a dangerous feature, allowing the trunk to be opened by accident while driving.i was told that there is a switch in the glove box that will lock out the trunk button.the problem with that is, we have a smart key system and there is no way to open the trunk from the outside of the car when that by-pass switch is used.

Twice since we purchased this car, the torsion rod holders which hold the trunk lid open have failed, causing the lid to crash down abruptly. The first time occurred at about the date shown above. The problem wasrepaired. The second incident occurred on april 4, 2011(46,000 miles) shortly after my wife lifted the lid to remove some groceries. She narrowly escaped serious injury when it slammed down. She could have been killed. This is not acceptable. There must be a defect in the design which has caused this to occur twice. Toyota should be forced to provide a permanent solution to this problem which i'm sure is not just limited to my vehicle.

Cracks in the dash board that keep getting bigger . Up to one year to replace. Un safe to wait that long

I am having a loud grinding sound when i put car in reverse, foot on brake, found was rear window shade(sunshade).noise last min. At stationary and in motion, then goes away. Apparently known problem with 2006 and 2007

2006 toyota avalon.consumer writes to obtain a more detailed description of the recall maintenance work that was performed on his vehicle.*tgw

Sudden acceleration.when first starting the engine, it revved up to about 2,500 rpms.a second episode occurred a few days later when i was driving downhill and my foot was on the brake.the vehicle suddenly accelerated to about 40 mph.at no time was my foot on the accelerator pedal in either situation.in both of these instances, the sudden acceleration resolved within a few seconds.these incidents occurred after safety recall work was performed by toyota on march 6, 2010.at this time, these are the only occasions where i experienced problems of this nature.i am concerned for the safety of my passengers and myself.i am in the process of reporting these problems to the dealership.

Takata recall i took my car to the dealership and made a complaint about the drivers seat shifting when i'm driving and mash on the brakes. I thought the seat needed tightening the toyota dealer checked the seat and informed me that the frame was deteriorating.

While sitting at a stop light, i heard a tremendous, sharp noise coming from the rear of the car. I thought the car had been hit with a rock or hard ball, but nobody in the cars around me seemed to have any concern or acknowledgement of something having hit my car. Upon pulling over and opening the trunk, i realized the trunk had no counterbalance and would not pop open or stay opened once manually lifted, creating a dangerous situation in which the trunk, without being held open, will slam shut with tremendous force. I have taken the car to two separate shops and they explained that the torsion bar ripped through/out of the brackets holding it onto the trunk structure. The repairs will require welding inside the trunk--a very expensive and potentially dangerous repair. The brackets will need to be removed and replaced. Both shops expressed that this appears to have been a design flaw and that it really should not have happened if the trunk had been properly designed and manufactured with sufficiently strong parts.

I was coasting into a parking stall in my 2006 toyota avalon when all of the sudden it roared very loud and sped forward into the parking sign that fortunately stopped the car.damage was done to the right front fender of the car.no injuries occurred.i hadan apppointment with the toyota dealer for repairs to be done for the recall items that same day even though i had not received a letter from toyota as of that date.the car damages was repaired at a body shop and then taken to the dealship for repair of the recall items.a letter from toyota was finally received about the recall after the fact.

Dashboard is "melting", sticky and shining, which causes problems with visibility through windshield. (safety concerns) i am also concerned with toxic gasses produced from the breakdown of the materials in the car. Contacted toyota about the problem and was told that they no longer replace the dashboard free of charge. Will be charged approximately $2,000 for replacement. This car has been kept in a garage most of the time, not in direct sunlight.

I was turning left at about 20 m.p.h. I tried to accelerate with the gas pedal about three quarters of the way to the floor.the car would not accelerate but very, very, slowly.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle independently accelerated without warning.the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The current mileage was 49,000.

The contact owns 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that while reversing from a residential driveway, the vehicle abnormally and rapidly accelerated. The contact crashed into a patio and then a house. There were no injuries. A police report was not filed. The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact was driving with the cruise control set at approximately 80 mph when she noticed that the brakes were not responsive when applied. The vehicle did not begin to slow down until the cruisecontrol was disengaged. The contact notified the dealer of the failure but the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 53,000. The current mileage was approximately 58,800.

On may2008 i was in a one car accident on the major freeway, determined by the police and sited a ticket for not being able to control the car.all i remember is my car accelerated and i went to slow down and lost control.my car was totaled and in pieces on the freeway.this vehicle had always accelerated since i had purchased it and determine that it was the type of car and was normal.i never received a recall on this vehicle until when i went to take another vehicle to get repaired i asked them if they had a recall with all of the media exposure.at that time they informed me that they did have a recall and i asked and was told.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While the contact wasdriving at approximately 60mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning causing it to drive over a curb. No one wasinjured and a police report was not filed. The current and failure mileages were approximately 18,000.

I have experienced the sudden acceleration on my vehicle but was able to lock up the wheels in gravel to kill the engine.no accident resulted.i want to inform the investigation group that the problem is not floor mat, accelerator pedal or any other excuse that toyota and the ex nhtsa employees that hired to coverup the reports.the problem is in the electronic controls.toyota has a multitude of electronic problems.

We have a 2006 toyota avalon.when that vehicle is in cruise, and accelerates for a hill, the force is so strong that it's like the accelerator was punched for passing.that behavior has existed since the vehicle was new.since we live in the hilly part of arkansas, we never use our cruise control on local roads.we have noted many recent reports of sticking accelerator pedals, and have wondered if the resultant crashes were actually caused by a malfunctioning cruise control system, in conjunction with the reported pedal sticking issue.if that is true, then toyota's current plans to add shims will not resolve the problem.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that he received a recall notice. When he called the authorized dealer to make an appointment, he was informed that the parts were backordered until january 2011.

2006 toyota avalon.

Laser guided cruise controlis unsafe...on curves it identifies cars approaching as in front and puts on the brakes and motor activates to stop the car.had this in a couple of times but did not get better. Have to drive with it turned off. Believe that toyota has now quit offering this unsafe option on their newer models.should have reported this earlier.

My car has had the unintended acceleration since i purchased it. I have taken my car in for the repair but my car is still accelerating. While driving car sped up but slowed itself back down to normal speed. This is how its been since purchase. I notice this last time that the speedometer does not reflect the change in speed so i don't know how many mph the car sped over my normal speed of 45mph. I have contacted maker but have not received a response as of today. I am thinking this could be the prelude to my car speeding up and not stopping.

The contact owned a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving approximately 3 mph, the vehicle began spinning around.when the driver applied the brakes, it accelerated and crashed into the fence. The dealer repaired the vehicle; however, the failure continued to occur. The dealer told them that they were unable to fix the vehicle a second time when the failure recurred since there was nothing wrong with it. The contact was able to trade the vehicle in for another vehicle by paying $1,600 on the lease of the failed vehicle. The contact was expecting toyota to refund them the $1600. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 300 and the current mileage was 25,000.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while driving 35 mph the accelerator pedal became stuck and the vehicle accelerated. The contact had to place both feet on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The contact called the dealership who informed him to call aaa. This administration should demand that toyota fix the pedal issue immediately.current owners should have the same fix as all new models with respect to this pedal issue.i took my car in for service and complained about this pedal issue about 2-3 years ago.i was told at that time by the technician that it was a fuel energy saving device.he made it sound that my car was safe. Therefore, i think toyota's records are flawed as to the exact number of complaints consumers (current owners) have made to service departments.in addition i purchased an additional 7 year extended warranty with my car through a toyota dealer.toyota should be mandated by us gov to fix the issue for all current owners, regardless if car is under warranty.a total replacement is necessary immediately.i have always suspected that the pedal was not safe.i had many concerns about someone hitting me in the back end or me hitting someone else on my front end.toyota has known about this issue too long and they should immediately fix it!!

Dt*: the contact stated intermittently, while accelerating and turning a corner the vehicle hesitated, and then lurched forward.the dealership was unable to determine the cause of the problem.updated 10/17/2006 -

2006 toyota avalon. Consumer states stuck gas pedal caused an incident. *tgwthe consumer stated as he was passing a another vehicle on a two lane road, he hit a pot hole and the vehicle accelerated at full speed across the road in front of the other vehicle. It went off the edge off the road on the right side and bottomed out.

I was driving home in my grandmother's 2006 toyota avalon at 5:00 a.m. On jan. 23, 2010 on south lamar in austin, texas. I was attempting to make a left-hand turn on to barton skyway, i released my foot from the accelerator, the accelerator got stuck, and my vehicle sped up which caused me to crash into a traffic light pole. I suffered a fractured humerus and broken nose.

The engine surged in my 2006 toyota avalon beginning just after purchase (when i thought i must have done something the first few times). This has continued sporadically --the last time was in early december, 2009--about ten times.i have reacted counter-intuitively, tapping the gas pedal lightly, and the engine settles down. Because i have put 89,000 miles on the car driving from san francisco to la each week, i have practiced putting the car in neutral as a first response if my lightly tapping the pedal does not work. The surge has felt as if there is a gremlin in the works of the car pushing the engine.i doubt if this is connected, but my emergency brake sets itself periodically--and i now know if the car is running a bit oddly that i need to check to see if the brake has set itself again. (about 30-40 times since i have owned the car) but the dealers have reacted quizzically.one of my sons has been adamant that i get rid of the car, but i am convinced that if it began to go out of control, by shifting into neutral and then turning off the car if need be should things should remain controlled.i am not near the car or the vin information but would be happy to provide this at a later date.

Over two yrs numerous times avalon toyota accelerated, brought in to be checked x2to be told nothing was wrong, happened to others in house also. Had recall fix done, did it again. Jumps forward withoutacceleration. Too afraid to wait , traded it in, lost alot of $ but feel safer. Other dealers to send to auction.

On a flat surface in cruise control travelingat 40+mph, brakes applied, then resume is activated, and vehicle surges ahead unexpectedly.on a hill at 50 mph, with cruise control on, the vehicle suddenly accelerates excessively causing the vehicle to veer right or left.this condition has existed since i purchased thevehicle new.after complying numerous times, the authorized toyota dealer could "detect nothingwrong with the cruise control".they did not offer to do a test drive.i have put up with this condition for a long time, but the problem is now much worse and dangerous to drive.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving the vehicle suddenly accelerated without intention. Consequently she crashed into cement and a fence inside of aparking lot. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a body shop. She was advised by the manufacturer to remove the floor mats. The current and failure mileages were approximately 12,000.

Has anyone ever considered the toyota vehicle speed control, vsc, system as a source of sudden acceleration? a code p1578 means brake system malfunction relating to the cruise control brake switch. If the brake switch develops an intermittent, stepping on the brake pedal will not cause the cruise to disengage. The driver will fight the cruise control with the brakes and think its a sudden acceleration.the toyota vsc system needs to be included in the protocol for their vehicle exams as well as independent forensic examiners.

I have a 2006 toyota avalon limited.on 2 occasions, while in cruise control, i attempted to uptick the stalk to increase speed one mph.the car accelerated rapidly well over one mph whereupon i canceled cruise control and everything became normal.

2006 toyota avalon surged forward after resetting cruise control. The consumer stated the tachometer went into the red before she could react and hit the brake. After the consumer was able to hit the brake everything returned to normal.

After having my 2006 toyota avalon recall supposedly repaired a week later i was pulling up to my mailbox and applied my brakes, however i realized the car was still accelerating.in order to stop i put my car in neutral and turned the engine off.when i called the dealership to tell them they told me i hadn't had the complete recall done and i needed to bring it back in.they said i needed to have the floor mat as well as the brake override recall done.i tried to tell them the first time i took it in i was suppose to have the floor mat portion of the recall done but they told me my vin number was not on the list as needing it done.it was not the floor mat that caused the problem though because my floor mat was still attached to the hook and in place.my complaint is mainly because they didn't do the complete recall when i had it in the first time.i had my 9 year old granddaughter with me, if we had been at a busy intersection i could have been hit because my car went at least a half of car length beyond my mail box by the time i got it stopped.

My vehicle 2006 toyota avalon , since i had bought it has always accelerated so i would just slow it down (tapping on the brakes). I assumed this was normal since i did bring it to the dealership telling them. May 3, 2008 i was in a bad car accident on 75 north.at that time the vehicle accelerated and when i went to slow down the car it went into the guard rail and after that when i woke up my carsplattered all over the freeway.i was fined by the police unable to control my car. Went to court to fight it and i had to pay $140.00 plus they wanted me to pay for the damage on the freeway $3,000.00. I had to be cut out of the car and my vehicle was totaled.

This morning as i was backing my 2006 avalon, it backed out on its own without me hitting my gas pedal. When i stopped and put it in drive it then accelerated on its own. I hit brake and turned off car. Last wednesday (march 3) i had the recalled accelerator fixed at my toyota dealer.

Sudden acceleration.

I have a 2006 toyota avalon and have had the accelerator get stuck four times over the past two years. Each time was when i was pushing the accelerator down hard to gain speed. Three times i was forced to put both feet on the brakes as hard as i could to slow the acceleration and luckily i was in open stretches where i didn't have intersections or oncoming traffic to contend with. The fourth time was just recently, after i had heard about the recall and after i had verified the floor mats were secured properly.i actually reached down with my right hand and unstuck the accelerator. The floor mat was not in contact with the accelerator at all.this is a very unsafe condition. When this has happened, it has been terrifying and i am lucky it did not happen on a busy street. I literally had to put the full force of both feet on the brakes to slow down the uncontrolled acceleration.when i drive now, i am very careful not to fully engage the accelerator, for fear of it getting stuck and i also make sure i'm able to reach down to grab the accelerator if it gets stuck again. I have told my wife about this to make her aware of the problem and a way to "fix" it while driving, but this is not an acceptable condition and toyota is wrong in saying it's strictly a floor mat issue.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While driving 55 mph on an incline she attempted to pass another vehicle and noticed that the vehicle suddenly accelerated without warning. The brakes would not stop the vehicle until she turned it off in order to stop it from accelerating. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the floor mat became stuck under the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that the vehicle would surge occasionally while driving at various speeds. The current and failure mileages were 47000.

My wife was driving her 2006 toyota avalon and came upon a four way stop . There were two vehicles in front of her that were stopped at the four way stop street. She experience sudden acceleration and the car was uncontrollable and crashed into the back end of a van in front of her that was standing still. It caused $9,000 damage to her car and she was taken to ma hospital for injuries to her leg and knee. The injury to her leg caused her to have a operation on it and daily medical attention for over two months. Now she has a knee problem that will require a replacement operation in the near future. We tried to trade in our avalon into a toyota dealer for a new avalon and the dealer said he would have to reduce the trade value $8,000 due to the car being wrecked. We have had the car into the dealer for all of the recalls fixes but the wife will not drive it because the fear of another sudden acceleration.

My 2006 toyota avalon is equipped with a laser cruise control.on 06/14/08, i was using the control when it failed.i was forced to suddenly apply the brakes to avoid crashing into the vehicle traveling in front of me on interstate 495.i have tested the unit several times since the initial failure and found it to be intermittent and unreliable.i have found it is unsafe to use the system.

The vehicle does not want to stop.while driving 1 block from an office to an intersection at a speed of less than 30 miles per hour i had to place both feet on brake pedal and mash the pedal to the floor to stop the vehicle at a stop light.mileage on the vehicle is 23,000 and i have told toyota this was occurring since i owned the vehicle.i have consistently had toyota check for problems and none are found.this happens about once every three months.the car is an automatic and this is the best way to describe what it feels like.if you were driving a manual transmission vehicle and were on a hill trying to maintain your position you would be engaging the clutch and the gas pedals, one would be fighting the other.that is what this feels like, the brake fights the gas pedal.

The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealership where the throttle actuator control motor was replaced. The contact had not noticed any further issues since the vehicle was repaired. The contact had not spoken with the manufacturer at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 85,000. The failure mileage was 83,319.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated when sitting at a traffic light the rpm's increase excessively causing the vehicle to lunge forward as if it want to take off. Also whenever he was getting on an exit and the accelerator pedal was being depress the vehicle would hesitate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated there was no problem with the vehicle and they could not duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 74,000.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while attempting to park the vehicle it suddenly accelerated without warning causing her to crash into a wooden board. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they cut the accelerator pedal. A complaint was filed with the manufacturer on the contacts behalf and she had not received a response. The contact didn't mention if anyone was injured. A police report was not filed. The current and failure mileages were approximately 50,000.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon.while decreasing speed to 25 mph, the vehicle lunged forward 2 to 3 feet. On several occasions the vehicle would idle and the rpm's rapidly increased. The vehicle sounded as if a jet were taking off whenever the vehicle was turned on. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer twice but the diagnostic test did not indicate any failure codes. The contact stated the vehicle is unsafe since it could potentially cause a crash when it lunged forward.the failure mileage was 42,000.

Drivingon a two lane highway, using the ir laser cruise control, and following a pickup truck at a speed below the "set" speed of the cruise system. As we approached a traffic signal the truck slowed and my cruise applied the brakes on my 2006 toyota avalon as it should.i applied the brake to disengage the cruise and to bring the car to a stop behind the pickup. At that point, everything appeared to be totally normal. But at a speed of approximately 30 mph the brake petal suddenly went to the floor and there was no evidence of any brakes.(total brake failure). I managed to find a hole thru the traffic, by entering the oncoming lane, and ran thru the intersection (against the red light), and managed to avoid vehicles at the light by turning left 90 degrees. Fortunately, other drivers at the intersection apparently saw me coming and held their positions. The car finally stopped rolling about 100 yards beyond the intersection.i shifted into "park" and tried to assess the situation. The engine continued to run, and when i stepped on the brakes again, the pedal responded as normal. The light on the dash indicated that the cruise control was disengaged, and there was no other warning light noticed. I had the vehicle transported to scottsboro, al by flatbed truck. It has been at the toyota dealers for the past six days. They checked the computer for codes, and tell me that no codes were stored. They also said they called toyota to see if they have any experience with a failure of this nature, and toyota apparently told them they did not. Inspection of the vehicle did turn up a problem with the ir laser sensor, which was misaligned, but the dealer told me that would not cause a brake failure. Inability to stop a vehicle is a significant safety issue. Had the traffic pulled into the intersection as they should have, i would have had no place to go, and an serious accident would have occurred.

Help!!

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact was accelerating 10 mphfrom a complete stop and to an intersection when the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact applied the brakes but the vehicle would not stop or decrease in speed. The contact was unable to stop the unintended acceleration and crashed into the rear of a truck. The contact sustained a concussion, fractured wrist, fractured tubular and a laceration on his left leg. The vehicle was destroyed. A police report was available. The dealer was informed of the failure and they stated that they would file a complaint. The failure and current mileage was 130,000.

On 2/10/2010 i was driving my 2006 toyota avalon headed to work. I made a complete stop at a stop sign and proceeded to turn right doing about 5 mph.once i turned the corner my car accelerated and went up on the curb and hit a fire hydrant. I was the only person occupying the vehicle and i was not hurt.i have since then had the recalls fixed on my car by the dealer, but they failed to tell me if my accelarator pedal was defected!

My 2006 toyota avalon has been giving me problems with the floor matsand accelerator getting stuck for over two years and now the accelerator gets stuck on its own. I am afraid to drive it back and forth on the highway and hope that toyota would replace it with a rental car until it can fix it.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that while driving 2 mph, the vehicle suddenly accelerated in reverse into another vehicle, spun around and continued into a building doorway. The contact tried to stop the vehicle by firmly depressing the brake pedal, but it continued to accelerate. The vehicle stopped after reversing into the building. A police report was filed. The contact sustained injuries. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who informed the contact that they would remove the floor mat and lower the stem. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.

I was accelerating when i was changing lanes.i took my foot off the gas pedal and it continued to accelerate hard on its own for about one half of a second.the gas pedal did not stick on the carpet.i do have the correct carpet and it was properly installed in place.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. While stopped at a traffic stop, the contact attempted to accelerate and noticed that the rpm reading dropped under 1000 rpms. The vehicle would not accelerate. The contact continued to depress the accelerator pedal until the vehicle responded. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing but the technician was unable to duplicate or diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Dear nhtsa,i own a 2006 toyota avalon xls, purchased used in summer 2009. A few days after ownership, i felt the car wanted to 'speed up on it's own', momentarily. I took it to our local toyota dealer (toyota of iowa city) who felt the problem might be due to 'gear shift set points' in the automatic transmission's computer programming. They reprogrammed the revolutions at which transmission would shift gears while driving. However, the surge problem persists. As time goes by and i read more about toyota's accelerator problems, i think this might be part of the same issue and so i would like to give you some detailed information on my observations. I have been studying it and made some careful observations about which conditions the surge occurs during, and would like to detail this for you. Perhaps under these conditions you might even be able to reproduce my surge situation in other toyotas.the problem occurs when the engine is warm. In order to ensure that the transmission shifting is not the issue, put the transmission manually into '3'. Drive on level road at about 30mph, the engine rpm's will typically be about 2000. Then, release foot from gas pedal. The engine rpm's will drop to about 1000, then spontaneously surge upward to about 1500 rpm. At that point, something seems to limit the rpm's from increasing further. This cannot be the correct operation; when one is not stepping on the gas pedal, the engine should slowly revert back to idle speed (or be governed by 'engine braking effects' if going downhill)...correct? i think that in a situation where this spontaneous limitation of rpm surging might not occur, i could experience a 'wide-open-throttle' situation that everyone is talking about. Please contact me for more details, i think my car might hold some secrets to the mysteries of the toyota throttle issue. This could potentially save lives. *rm

My drivers seatbelt did not work.

Our 2006 toyota avalon (limited) was in cruise control set to highway speed, about 60 to 70 mph. For a reduced speed zone, the car was slowed by 10 mph using cruise control. After the reduced speed zone, cruise control setpoint was increased 10 mph to return to the previous highway speed, and the car continued to accelerate uncontrollably to more than 80 mph. Then, the brake was applied which took car out of cruise control. The car slowed, and cruise control was reset to highway speed. The problem did not recur on that trip in 2006, but there have been other cases of uncontrolled acceleration since the above incident.

I concur with the toyota owners who are saying that the problem is some electronic glitch.i have also experienced this.i only have the carpet mats, not the all weather ones, and just had them checked at the dealer and they are properly fastened.my car most often experiences a problem ( on occasion) when you "yield" at an intersection and don't stop--the car bucks or then bolts. It needs more looking into.these high speed accelerations being reported are scary!

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that while driving 5 mph in reverse into a parking space at speeds of less than 5 mph, the vehicle abnormally accelerated forward without warning and crashed into a brick wall. The vehicle sustained moderate front end damage. The police arrived at the scene and a police report was filed accordingly. The contact confirmed that this was not the first time the vehicle accelerated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer three times for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 10v017000 (vehicle speed control: accelerator pedal). The failure mileage was 44,000 and the current mileage was 46,592.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact had the repair done on feb 17thfor the recall on the accelerator pedal. The contact did not have a problem until the repair was done, whichwas the placement of a metal shim that wasput under the accelerator pedal. On february 28 there was an unintended acceleration with the vehicle. The contact was parking the vehicle and whilebacking up the vehicle accelerated, he then shifted the vehicle into drive and it went forward and hit the vehicle in front of him.the contact then put the vehicle in neutral and turned the it off andit stopped. The vehicle did not stop revving up until it was turned off. No one was injured, there was only bumper damage. A police officer was there and he took a report. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and contact was told to file a claim,#1003101250. The failure mileage was 31,859.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact was driving approximately 60 mph and attempted to pass a vehicle, suddenly the accelerator pedal became stuck. When the gear was shifted into the neutral position the vehicle slowed down. The vehicle was driven to the side of the road. The contact released the stuck accelerator pedal manually with the use of his hands. The failure occurred after the acceleration pedal modification repair which was performed on march 5, 2010. The nhtsa campaign id number was 10v01700 (vehicle speed control: accelerator pedal).the vehicle was taken back to an authorized dealer. The accelerator pedal assembly was removed during the inspection process. Also, the vehicle was test driven and the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The failure mileage was 43,100. The current mileage is 43,300. Updated 05/10/10 the consumer stated two weeks later, a new pedal assembly was installed in the vehicle. Updated 05/12/10.

The day after my car had 3 recalls corrected, i was driving around 20 mph when the car started to take off.i put the brake on real hard and got it stopped at about 35 mph.needless to say my passenger and i were scared to death.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that he was driving with his foot on the brake pedal when suddenly the vehicle accelerated. The speed of the vehicle increased to 45 mph. The vehicle drove over the curb twice, accelerated and suddenly stopped. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing; however, they were unable to determine what caused the failure to occur. The failure occurred before the contact received recall 09v388000 (vehicle speed control: accelerator pedal). The contact requested reimbursement from the manufacturer; however, they could not offer it since the failure occurred over a year ago. The failure mileage was 60,857. The current mileage was approximately 82,500.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that when driving, his vehicle suddenly accelerated. . he depressed the brakes but the vehicle continued to accelerate. He kept pressing the brakes and shifted gears into neutral until eventually the vehicle began to decelerate. He took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the cause may have been the floor mats. He did not have any more problems after that failure occurred in march 2006. He called the manufacturer in 2009 about the floor mat recall 09v388000 and was told to go the dealer to have the floor mats removed. The contact stated that the current mileage was approximately 64,900. The failure mileage was approximately 9,000. Updated 2/26/10 updated 09/07/10

While toyota has issued a letter regarding nhtsa campaign #09v388000, i believe that the problem with continuous acceleration is caused not by the carpet (which is a ludicrous story) but by the faulty control mechanism (perhaps, computer chips) used in the cruise control.my 2006 avalon has a laser-guided cruise control which automatically slows down my vehicle when it approaches too close to the vehicle ahead of it.after a safe distance is attained, it then accelerates to keep up with the vehicle ahead.i have noticed that sometimes in so doing, the vehicle surges as if i were flooring the gas pedal.it is scary when it lunges forward with such a force.iam nolonger using the cruise control for this reason.i believe that the problem is in certain cruise control defect.carpet has nothing to do with it.that sounds like a smoke screen.please investigate vigorously.

Laser cruise control system: when the system detects a vehicle/object within the programmed following distance it slows the vehicle as designed. When the vehicle/object then leaves the detection zone the vehicle will, if it has slowed significantly, suddenly down shift and accelerate very quickly. This could lead to loss of control and possibly cause a collision with another vehicle if you have changed lanes to overtake the vehicle that caused you to slow. I cannot think that the manufacturer intended the system to work in this manner , but it seems to be common across all of these vehicles and not a failure.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The contact stated that when ac unit was activated, an unknown white powdered substance was emitted from the vents. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer and the manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 74,000 and the current mileage was 74,500.

Car has 32000 miles and has been kept in a garage since new. Dashboard is so shiny, we can no longer drive it. Toyota has delayed getting the replacement dashboard for most of 2015, and now says it could be another year to year and a half. We cannot drive this car because the sun shines off of the dashboard, making it impossible to see. The reflection in the inside of the windshield is so intense, that we have elected not to drive it (it was our primary car), so we went out and bought a new honda. I'm a disabled veteran, and this really hurt our budget - but we had to have a dependable car. This recall should be elevated to a safety recall to force toyota to step up and prioritize replacement dashboards.

On a trip from florida to ohio there was a humming that started between 40 an 60 miles per hour.when it was taken to the dealer they identified it as a right front wheel bearing that was defective.the vehicle is a 2006 toyota avalon with 44,500 miles on it.i took the vehicle to another service shop to verify the defect and they confirmed that it was the right front wheel bearing that was defective.they replaced the part and gave me the defective one.

Could not change flat tire because lug nuts had swelled so wrench would not fit, had to buy a size bigger wrench to remove lug nuts. Also all the lug nuts on the car were swelled. When i asked about this i was told this is a common problem.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota avalon. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for an unrelated repair when they noticed that the front driver's side lug nuts expanded their normal size due to water consumption within the wheel hub covering.
