Consumer had a concern about the air bags in the vehicle due to her height and weight.

It was a clear day dry road, about 5:30 pm on aug. 16, 2005.i was westbound on state rt 9, in loudoun county vatraveling at about 30 mph.a 2005 honda crv, suv, crossed my lane directly in front of me.i was so close that there was no time to avoid the accident, no time to slow down.i pushed the suv sideways about 30 feet before coming to a stop.during the accident my toyota avalon air bags failed to deploy, (operate).during the accident i could see the side air bags on the honda operate.as a result of the accident i was injured by the seat belt and my car was a total loss.no corrective action has been taken by toyota with respect to this accident.

Consumer was driving at 60-65 mph , steered to right to avoid rage road and then made a sharp left ,lost control of vehicle , and hit a concrete bridge head-on,and then rolled over 5 times. Dual airbags did not deploy. There was no warning of airbags being inoperative. Consumer states side air bags did not deploy when vehicle rolled over.

Dt:the consumer was involved in an accident and the air bags did not deploy.there was no indication that the air bags would not deploy.the manufacturer was called and the consumer is waiting for a reply.the dealer had not been contacted yet. The driver sustained bruises to her sternum, abdomen and left side from the seat belt. The cruise control was on when all of a sudden a hail storm hit and instantly changed the road into ice.the consumer swerved from the outer lane across the highway and into the median where the vehicle struck two vehicles.the traction control did not activate and the steering had become inoperative. *sc the traction control was non-existent on all 4 wheels.

The first thing that happened was that the air bag light on the dash came on.looked this up in the manual and it said to take the car in to the dealer - which i did. The local toyota deal said that they ran a check and found nothing wrong with the car. Their explanation was that a led light in the dash was malfunctioning. My horn was not working either - so they wiggled the wires under the hood and said that it would be fine. The horn lasted until i was out oftheir driveway. This fall i decided to take my car to a local garage to have the brakes replaced. And asked them if they would check on my horn, since it didn't work. They told me it was odd for a horn to go out - but they would replace it if needed. Before they did anything to the horn they called me to let me know that not only did i not have a horn but - i didn't have the driver air bag or cruise control. The problem is that a spring in the steering column is broken. It is called the cable hub assembly. Presently i can not get a clean inspection on my car - because this is a safety hazard issue. Used parts are not safe to use and new parts must be ordered fromtoyota - and are costly. The labor for installation is costly as well.

This is an intermitend problem and it happens when starting on the car.to turn the car on i have to take the steering wheel and forcefully turn it left and right. Move also the shifter to neutral.i also try to press the brake at the same time.mechanics have not been able to duplicate the problem. The car was also checked by a toyota dealer and the problem wasnot identified. The battery and the cables are working properly.now it is happening very often and creating a security and safety issue.i checked the recalls for this car associated with this situation i did not find an answer although i have read lots of related complains.i am planning to change the ignition or the starter but probably is a try and error solution.

Steering wheel locked while driving in a right hand turn.toyota dealer replaced the ignition cylinder housing assembly and charged consumer $464.13.i have posession of failed part which clearly demonstrates loose locking pin. Vehicle is a2000 toyota avalon with 102029 miles.

Problems with consumer getting locked in vehicle as well as brake problems. *mr the problem had been present since the vehicle was purchased.the steering wheel would not turn, neither would the key turn the ignition.the brake problem remained unresolved.on another occasion the consumer tried to slow down to make a turn and the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably.the only way the vehicle wold stop, was to turn the key and the shut the motor off.the vehicle lost power when backing out of a parking space, the ignition problem was intermittent and the brake problem was intermittent. *sc

While driving vehicle experienced an underhood fire. Dealer notified.

Dealer states that even though the indicator light comes on indicating the vsc system is malfunctioning that the system is still working as designed. I have had 4 visits to repair this problem including a factory technician. Dealer states i have nothing to worry about.

Driving between 10-15 mph in an open parking lot, the car suddenly accelerated (rpms between 7-8).applied brakes to no avail.when trying to shift to park, the car accelerated in reverse.did manage to get car in park and shut off engine.most horrifying experience.very fortunate and blessed no other persons, vehicle or building was in our path.was able to restart the car and it idled normal and exhibited no other accelerations when driving. Brought car to toyota dealer.diagnostics performed and found no problem.dealer contacted toyota corp. And notified us nothing would be done unless we contacted corporate personally to report the incident. As of this date, we now have a case number assignedfrom corporate and the car is back at the dealer for further assessment.

As soon as i start the car, 'check engine' light keeps coming in spite of several years of repairs and several hundred dollars spent at two toyota dealers, and at several other garages. First time this happened was in 2005. Right now the light is on.the toyota 2000 avalon xl i have has serious manufacturing defects.in 2004 driver side window would not roll and cost me almost $600.00the water pump, gasket, drive belts, engine cover and logo, etc have been changed.

'check engine' light keeps coming when driving. Since 2005, two toyota dealers and two independent repair shops were unable to correct the problem for good. Latest repair was in september 2015 at toyota. Check engine light is still on.

Changed engine oil as directed by toyota dealer on my new 2000 toyota avalon (every 3,000 miles).white smoke started coming from exhaust in late 2001.took it in to toyota service dept.was accused of not keeping uproutine maintenance (oil changes) on the vehicle, as sludge had built up under valve cover and in engine.was totally livid at this untrue accusation.was told i needed $4,000 to repair.i had to trade the vehicle in on a new toyota vehicle -- starting at $4,000 in the red.for example, new vehicle was approximately $26,000.to that toyota added the $4,000 to it.i now owe $30,000 on a vehicle worth much much less.i'm enraged and want a $4,000 credit back to my balance on my new vehicle after learning of the obvious relevation that toyota is to blame for a faulty engine problem on many of its vehicles.i work for a law firm and will stop at nothing short of this outcome.thank you.

The contact owns a 2000 toyota avalon.in the mornings, especially in cold weather, the contact makes several attempts to start the vehicle.there were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument control panel.she called the dealer and is currently in the process of having the vehicle inspected to determine the cause of the failure.the manufacturer stated that because she exceeded her warranty, they would not provide any assistance.the failure and current mileages were 63,000.

Our 2000 toyota avalon 6 cylinder engine shut down due to oil sludge. We had it towed to the nearest toyota dealer (champion toyota) where they told us the engine is dead due to the years of oil sludge. No one told us that the 2000-2002 avlon was in a quiet recall called csp to "fix" those engines. The figure for a new engine is $9000,we decided to take the car to a auto shop near the house where the oil sludge was cleaned.we got the car back. Within a few weeks, the car broke down on a busy highway intersection late at night.we had the car towed home as it was very late.we had the car towed to charles maund toyota who sold us the car (car previously owned by the owner charles maund.we bought it with 7000 miles on it in 2000t.the mechanics there cleaned the sludge and try to test drive, only to have the engine shut down again..they took it apart and found that the engine has been damaged beyond repair due to the sludge problem.we did some research on the web andhas them to make good on the repairs even though we were not notified of the csp and were not able to take advantage of it during the time limit placed on the csp by toyota corp. The problem is well known and well documented.we have regularly changed the oil, though not always with toyota dealer as we have moved.the engine breakdown could have caused accidents had we not been able to coast to a narrow shoulder by the corner of 2222/360 highway interchange. We want toyota to replace the engine and correct the defective design. We also believe that mr. Charles maund may have received the csp notice as he was the "original owner" but fail to communicate that to us.we have purchased 2 vehicles from charles maund and were regular maintenance customers so they have our records and would have known that we have one of the oil sludge 6 cylinder avalons.

I own a toyota avalon 2000 with <87000; 4 weeks ago the car experienced a complete engine failure that was determined to be as a result of low oil volume most likely due to oil sludge build-up. I have regularly maintained the vehicle, and have all the receipts. The dealership has tried to avoid taking blame, but after two independent adjusted viewed the car, the dealership has put me in a loaner vehicle. I am awaiting a return call from the regional manager, but they are taking a long time to respond; they have had my car 4 weeks. I have done extensive researchand found toyota reported oil sludge problems and has covered costs of repairs. I am, however, having great difficulty getting something done with my car.

Impact on right front, severe enough to knock engine out of mount.

While driving at any speed and whenaccelerator was releasedvehicle stalled and lost power.oncevehiclestops only then can it be restarted.vehicle had been to the dealer twice for this problem, anddealer could not duplicatethe problem.

I took my avalon in because there was smoke coming from the tailpipe upon engine start.they told me that there was sludge buildup caused by the improper maintainance and that they would clean out the engine and that should help.but the fact is the car now pings so loud you can not hear the radio.no it is not the gas. They blamed the sludge problem on my maintenance.i have always kept the car up to date on the oil changes.the miles at that time were approximately 30,000.i have heard many toyota's have the same problem.the miles i have now are 50,000.

The engine would cut off twice while driving 40 to 65 mph.dealer test drove vehicle for 125 miles however was not able to find anything wrong the vehicle.*nlm

While driving the vehicle at 1mph (one miles) bumper to bumper traffic, vehicle suffered sudden acceleration when shifted from park into drive, vehicle collided with another car, shifted again from drive to reverse and smashing the vehicle behind. The vehicle has a stalls from time to time without any notice.already i've had five diffent occasions where the vehicle won't start.i 've took it into the dealer twice they tell me they didn't find anything.the last time i took it ithey kept it overnight, and was told by the assistant manager they checked the computer, starter, engine, transmission, and they didn't find anything wrong with the vehicle.the very next morning it would not start.i'm very upset by this matter, and not to mention the safety issue i don't know when the car is going to stall.i can't travel far for this reason.i also left two messages with the service manager who have not returned any of my calls.i feel that the car has some type of defect and would like to receive justice in this matter.&

Anytime vehicle is started up massive amounts of white smoke comes out fromrear for as long as 3 minutes, and vehicle runs hard.dealer stated it was neglect, not getting enough oil changes.vehicle needed a total of 6 oil changes, andconsumer had only gotten 5 oil changes. Valve cap was removed, and black sludge had build up.dealer's remedy was to flush the engine, which made it worse.

The consumer paid for repairs of timing belt, alternator belt, power steering belt, hub and wheel bearing, and o-ring on 2000 toyota avalon xls. Consumer vin not included in rear hub assembly recall. The consumer had the left rear axle bearing replaced prior to receiving recall notification.the repair facility indicated that they could not honor the repairs because the vehicle was not manufactured within the limitations of the dates listed on the recall.

Good afternoon,my name is [xxx] and some time ago .i was contacted by the office of [xxx] concerning the factory defect that may be responsible for numerous accidents and may have even killed drivers through the exposure of carbon monoxide.toyota executive continues to deny this claim hoping i will go away.i am awaiting your response and i look forward to the promised inspection of my car.my husband and i have been poisoned by the carbon monoxide seeping into the car through the vents.trotter ford toyota in pine bluff, arkansas said the car had carbon monoxide going all over the car and that the car was dangerous.i contacted toyota executive ceo [xxx] office .he sent a man down to inspect my car .the person assigned to the car tried to bash me and in the process admitted several dangerous components to this car.i am asking to speak before congress on this matter .i don't care how old this car is i dont deserve to be poisoned to death by carbon monoxide.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*pm

Engine warning light and vsc and vsc off light went on while driving. Dealer indicated that a valve in the charcoal canister and the canister itself needed replacement. The components are part of the emissions system and the vsc is part of the same circuit hence both sets of warning lights went on. Dealer indicated that if you top off the tank the extra gas spills over into the canister and can overwhelm the valve causing excessive usage and possible shorting. I indicated that i have never topped off the tank in this car, dealer had no other explanation. Part is not covered under the toyota $1800 extra care gold extended warranty, and cost to replace canister was $285.00, and $31.00 for valve, plus $285.00 labor.note:78k miles on vehicle, same exact problem on three other occasions:6/11/03new valve, vacuum swi installed, total charge $152.1152,587 mileage10/16/03diagnosis & clean sensor reinstall code, total charge $130.5056,694 mileage6/24/04diagnosis & reinstall code, total charge $43.5060,252 mileage.

Engine check light came on.we took it into the toyota dealer who said that the charcoal cannister in the emissions system had to be replaced.the service people also indicated that they have had to replace a lot of cannisters on various toyota models.

The contact owns a 2000 toyota avalon.the contact stated that the turn signal was inaudible whether turning the vehicle left or right and it remained engaged after the switch was activated.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that nothing could be done to correct the failure.the failure has occurred ever since the vehicle was purchased, however, the turn signal was louder at one time.the speed and powertrain were unknown.the current and failure mileages were 55,000.

Went to toyota dealer to diagnose/repair check engine light. Call from dealer reported air/fuel sensor defective -- gave price of $449 to repair, dealer was authorized to proceed. Two hours later, another call from dealer reported that sensor could not be removed (frozen or "welded" in place), would have to replace complete manifold at cost of greater than $1000. I believe this should be toyota's responsibility due to faulty assembly. (see previous report of insufficient anti-seize compound used.) unless adequate compensation is forthcoming, i will continue to drive the vehicle this way, as i am told it will not do damage to the vehicle, but only affect gas mileage. However, as this is part of the vehicle emission control system, i suppose it will be further damaging air quality.

The contact owns a 2000 toyota avalon.the contact stated that the air fuel sensor failed.while the vehicle was being repaired, the mechanic damaged the manifold because the vehicle lacked anti-seize compound.the check engine and abs lights illuminated during both occurrences.the mechanic informed the contact that both the 1999 and 2000 models lacked sufficient anti-seize compound to prevent the damage.there are three sensors that may fail and the contact is concerned that the manifold will need to be replaced after each failure.the mechanic explained that the failure has been corrected in subsequent model years.the contact felt that she should not have to pay for the manufacturer defect.the current and failure mileages were 62,000.

Consumer states that at night, the light on the instrument panel reflects off the windshield making it difficult for driver to see.nlma repair was made but it did not eliminate the problem, consumer adds that the new plastic deflector also reflects on the windshield at night causing poor visibility.

My 2000 toyota avalon steering would randomly lockup when making turns.the pin that locks up the steering wheel for theft protection would activate while driving down the road which in turn would lock the steering up making it impossible to steer the vehicle.my son was driving the car when the steering locked up when he was making a right turn running car into the curb.a week later i was making a left turn and the steering locked causing me to veer into oncoming traffic.luckily there was very little traffic and i avoided a collision.my toyota dealership had no explaination for the problem.the estimate for replacing the part with labor wouldbe about $800.00. I had a mechanic at a local garage just remove the locking device for $200.00 and not replace it.

Vehicle hadelectrical door locks .the driver went to open the door, and neither driver'slock nor passenger's lock would open while inside of vehicle. Passenger had a panic attack because the doors would not release for safety.passenger had to be transported by ambulance.

The vehicle was involved in a frontal collision, and the seat belts failed to properly restrain the consumer. The consumer suffered injuries.

I am concerned as to whether the seat belt anchoring system conforms with the seat belt standard.the car has a split bench seat, and can carry 3 passengers in the front.the right side passenger belts are anchored to the chassis - side and floor. The driver side has one portion attached to the seat runner, and the middle passenger has one to the seat as well.should all belts be anchored to the floor or side pillar?

The front drivers seat rocks forwardwith at lease 1 inch of play. We took the car back to the dealer and they originally advised us it was a normal condition. After several calls, and complaints to toyota, they "found" a bulletin that said the seat mount "could become" worn prematurely. We see this as a safety issue that should be recalled on all avalons. Afterall, what would happen if the mount went bad and the seat became detached from the car while someone was driving?

Dt: 2000 toyota avalon has power seats.on january 22, 2002 both seats reclined all the way without anyone or keys in the vehicle. The doors were locked, and the consumer watched this happen.vehicle was taken to dealer, who could not duplicate the problem.service representative said it could not happen.the second time only the passenger's side seat reclined with no one in the vehicle. Consumer just stepped out of the vehicle, and when he looked back the seat was reclined.second occurance was may 26, 2005. The milage of the vehicle was 56,900. The dealership that is on questionaire is no longer open.*sb

While pulling into a parking space in front of a retail store. The car suddenly accelerated with engine at highest rpm.... Front end hitting concrete wall . Police and emt's called and report given. Relatively minor head and chest injuries to 88 year old driver. No air bag deployment. Car towed to repair shop.where it was discovered that the steel cable from the accelerator pedal where it is located just inside the fire wall was stuck in the full accelerate position.the location of this cable was not affected by the resulting crash. There were no carpet pads orothersuch items which could have interfered with the accelerator pedal ( as previously reported in past high speed toyota crashes).further, the driver's foot wasoff the accelerator and moving towards the brake at the time of acceleration but the distance traveled was only about 10 feet before the crash!

On may 22, 2009, ibacked my 2000 toyota avalon into a parking area next to a short private road located about halfway down a high cliff above a beach. After getting out of the car, i decided to move it about a foot further off the road.so i backed up very slowly until the bumper just touched the cliff behind me.i braked, the car stopped, and then i stepped very lightly on the gas pedal, intending to brake immediately after moving forward a few inches.to my horror, the car shot forward rapidly, and i was unable to stop it, no matter how hard i pumped the brake pedal.i somehow managed to turn it to the left and thus avoided plunging over the cliff below me. The car continued to accelerate, fish-tailing up a slight grade.then it hit a parked car and turned upside-down on the road.i suffered broken vertebrae in my back and neck and had to be hospitalized for 12 days and wear a head-neck brace for two months.the car was totaled.

I pulled in driveway with foot on brake proceeded to try to put vehicle in park.when i hit the button, my foot went to the floor and the car dashed forward, causing damage to the car and the garage door, frame and wall.my dealer said it couldn't happen and would not look at the vehicle.

Sudden acceleration, one time only, resulting insevere front end damage. I was at entrance to car wash speaking to the attendant when the car took off at high speed. My car was stopped by hitting the rear end of a jeep at the end of the car wash. The reason was inexplicable.

I was following my wife out of the subdivision to work at approximately 06:40.i went through 3 stop signs with no apparent problems breaking.when my wife stopped at the 4th sign, my break peddle went to the floor and i hit her rear end at approximately 5 mph.there scratches and dents in both bumpers.i crept back home at 5 mph and attempted to stop at all three stop signs.the car stopped slowly, but the break peddle went to the floor each time.i had the car towed back to the dealer for inspection.a toyota factor representative examined the car on september 19, 2000.i recieved a call from toyota today and was told that there was nothing wrong with my car.this is the biggest bunch of bull since firestone said they make good tires.i talked to the owner of the toyota dealership and told him that i had lost cofindence in the car and toyota, and wanted my money back.he said that because there was an "alleged" break failure there was nothing he could do about it.my only recourse was to the better business bureau and the texas department of motor vehicles (administers the texas lemon law).i will persue these avenues of recourse, but also want to file a complaint with the nhtsa.i believe that toyota's lawyers have control of this situation, and there is no way they will admit that their produce is faulty.does the nhysa have any other reports of break failures on new toyota avalon's?i appreciate any assistance you can provide.thanks mike vorndam

After proceeding on a green light, vehicle in front came to a sudden stop, consumer commenced to apply brakes, and vehicle at first stopped, and then leaped and rear ended front vehicle.dealer was notified. Consumer stated applied brakes and vehicle slowed down.

When the consumer was applying the brakes the vehicle wheels on the right side lock up during dry weather. Also, in wet weather the tires would give a quick spin. Consumer is asking a full refund of the vehicle.

I've been through arbitration, the arbitrator failed me miserably.he decided it was not a safety issue. However, toyota can't repair the car. So how does he know it's not a safety issue.toyota has not eliminated the noise.according to toyota's bulletin all models from "90 to 00" could suffer from this brake pad clicking noise.toyota has merely created a band-aid for the noise (the bulletin advises that a dic brake caliper grease is to be applied), but they have not repaired the problem. And the proposed fix only will last 6 month to1 year.it did not last a week for me. As a consumer with a car that is still under its 3year/36000 mile warranty, i feel cheated.please look into toyota's unacceptable response to this problem.

I own a 2000 toyota avalon. I purchased the car new and it now has 94,000 miles on it. The car has been regularly serviced and has never been in an accident. Recently i have had a problem with the steering wheel locking while i am driving. The first time it happened i was driving approximately 20 mph and was turning right into a parking lot. The wheel locked, i stopped the car and tried turned the wheel right and left to unlock it and it wouldnot unlock. I put the car in reverse backed up a few feet and then pulled forward while trying to turn the steering wheel and then it unlocked. I thought this was a freak occurrence. The same thing happened about one month later during another right hand turn into a parking lot and then again two weeks later while backing out of a parking space. All three times the car has been moving and the engine running. I asked a local repair shop about repairing the vehicle and they have called several toyota dealers and no one has ever heard of this problem. I called toyota customer service and they have no record of this problem. I am now afraid to drive the car!

This incident happened on february 10, 2015 while i was driving to work, i took this ramp at 30 mph which is a left tuning curve that takes you to the highway. At the end of the ramp i had to gradually accelerate and make a moderate right turn to join the highway traffic. After finishing the right turn, i couldn't keep the car running straight on the highway. The steering wheel was locked and i wasn't able to steer the vehicle. The vehicle kept on going the right turn and crashed into a guard rail causing the bumper cover, bumper reinforcement, wind shield washer tank, front bumper grill and left and right lights to be damaged. The steering system and its components are in good working condition.this accident happened because "steering interlock assembly" recall of july 29, 2010 (nhtsa campaign number: 10v345000) was not done to my 2000 toyota avalon. Toyota did not notify me of this recall. I believe that toyota is aware of the fact that there are vehicles like mine that being driven on the streets without the steering interlock assembly recalls taken care of.the consequence of the recall states that:should the steering lock bar break, the steering wheel would lock and the driver would lose the ability to steer the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.toyota failed to address the issue that i was concerned about. Toyota performed an inspection which not related to the steering column recall. Please help the steering lock assembly be inspected.

Passenger side tire shakes till i reach 45mph it stops

When making a right turn from southbound eastern ave. To west bound warm springs the steering wheel locked in the turned position causing the car to go over a curb nearly hitting a utility pole. The right front wheel was bent and that tire was destroyed and the front end likely knocked out of alignment. In other circumstances a disastrous crash could easily have occurred. I have a phone call in to a toyota dealer to fix things.

When the vehicle is started in the winter, the steering column is sometimes locked, making it impossible to steer the vehicle until the steering wheel is turned back and forth repeatedly, the vehicle warms up, or the vehicle is turned on and off. Internet research suggests this is part of established steering problems with the 2000 avalon and likely related to the steering lock bar of the interlock system. No steering issues have occurred as of yet while the vehicle is in motion.

The contact owns a 2000 toyota avalon. When the contact was attempted to make a right turn at 5 mph, the steering wheelsuddenly locked causing the contact to crash into a vehicle. There were no injuries. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact was informed that the steering lock needed to be replaced. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 114000.

Power steering became intermittently effective, with sections of steering wheel turning being hard to turn, and easy to turn. Mechanic replaced the lower steering assembly u-joint, and stated that we were lucky that it did not break. The old unit is operable on one axis, whereas it is froze up on the other90 degree axis.

Dear sir or madam, i am writing to you because there was an incident with my vehicle while driving on the freeway. My car is a 2000 toyota avalon xs, and the problem i experienced could have been life threatening. I drive about 25 miles to work daily through the freeway and yesterday while driving on the freeway my steering wheel locked itself while the car was on, for about 2 minutes i was unable to go in any other direction other than straight because it had locked itself. After using force to turn the steering wheel it had finally dislodged, it was a scary experience because i had started to drift into the other lane so i slowed down a little. I was fortunate enough for it to be locked in a straightaway instead of a turn. However that was only the first time it had happened, later that night when i was doing errands it had locked up once again, this time outside our house. After trying to budge it for a whole hour it finally unlocked and i immediately took it to our car shop. The owner of the shop, a friend of ours, encouraged us to write to you to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

On july 3, 2008, my 2000 toyota avalon steering column locked while on vacation in sedona, az.it was towed to the nearest toyota dealership which was in prescott, az.the dealership repair receipt reads:faulty lock pin, removed ignition lock bracket, removed lock pin, reinstalled bracket.needs new lock bracket and break-off bolts.(please refer to the mechanic notes that i needed a new lock bracket and break-off bolts - did toyota know at this time this was a defective problem?) recently i received a safety recall notice for certain 2000 - 2004 toyota avalon steering column upper brackets. I have contacted toyota by mail and phone and they refuse to reimburse me for the expenses i have incurred because of their defective manufacturing.the recall notice describes the recall condition as follows:due to the improper casting of the steering lock bar, which is a component of the steering interlock system, there is a possibility that minute crack may develop on the surface.such a crack may expand over a long period of repeated lock and unlock operations, and eventually the bar could break.it this occurs, the interlock system may become difficult to unlock when stationary. .....

While i was turning a 90 degree right hand turn onto a city street at approximately 20 mph, the steering column completely locked up while the car was in motion. Not power steering assist failure, but complete lock up.i slammed on the brakes and stopped the car.after turning the ignition off, then back on, the car could again be steered.this had never happened before, and we had bought the car new in 2000.car now has 92,000 miles.the dealer removed the steering column lock at my insistence.no other part was repaired or replaced, according to the dealer.old part is not available.

I started my 2000 toyota avalon lx and found the steering wheel to be locked.the key easily started the car and i was able to shift easily into any gear, and drive or go forward. But the steering remained locked.i had to have the car towed to the dealer and they replaced the ignition cylnder housing and bracket assy. Steering.no explation was given as to why the locking happened.the tow truck driver said he had never seen such a thing in his 20 years of towing cars.

Steering wheel installed 30-45 degrees off center. After correcting/alignment car exhibited extreme pull to left. 3 plus further attempts do not cure pull to left. Pulling contributed to accident 5/13/2000. Requested arbitration, unsatisfied. Currently suing under federal magnuson-moss warranty act and ohio lemon law. Dash lights also annoyingly reflect in windshield in direct line of sight.

While car parked steering locked would not release, later the same evening steering locked while car was being driven, causing no steering ability, almost crashed into fence. Car taken to dealer needs steering column replaced, at my expense.i can have old part as soon as i receive car back from dealer.

My wife was driving our originally purchased 2000 toyota avalon which has never been in an accident and has routinely been serviced by toyota dealer.upon leaving a street parking location and pulling away from the curb the steering wheel locked forcing the vehicle to proceed in the "frozen" direction into the lane of oncoming traffic.luckily all oncoming traffic was avoided and no one was injured.she had just come off the freeway with grandchildren in the car and had just dropped them off.she stopped the vehicle in a relative safe position, angled into the lane of traffic and awaited a tow from aaa to our toyota dealer in el cajon.there was no advance warning of this condition.the dealer dismantled the steering column and found the locking mechanism failed and slipped into the locked position.they repaired the vehicle at a cost of $581.it could have been catastrophic!

The bodyshop wont release the vehicle because it waw part of a safety issue, and theywere waiting on the parts to complete the repair.the current and failure milage were22000.

Car was parked in the garage. I noticed that the eyeglasscompartment that is located inside the car between the two front visors was hanging down and covering the inside rear view mirror.i tried to close it shut by pushing it up into place, but it kept falling down. I put on masking tape to keep it closed, since i did not want to drive without the use of my inside rear view mirror. That same day, i had an appointment to get new tires at an auto repair place.i drove directly there and asked the auto mechanic to remove the compartment cover entirely.he removed the cover, it was held in place with two little screws, and he also found in the car a tiny piece of aluminum, in a v shape, that must have been part of the compartment locking mechanism.i have had this car for 14 years and never have put anything in that compartment. I may have opened it once to see how it worked when i first got the car.i am glad that this did not happen while i was driving in traffic, andthat this cover is now completely gone from the car.this car does have very low mileage.

My 2000 totyota avalon has a "loose" and "twitchy" front suspension that presents itself as you approach normal highway speeds.as road feel and control diminishes with increased speed, the care becomes stressful to drive.this results in a "wandering" front end causing the driver to over-correct in even moderate turning maneuvers.this is most pronounced when several passangers or luggage is in the car.this is even now reported by consummer reports.

Details: front end "bottoms out" and hits the driver sidefront tire when exiting and /or entering inclines to strip malls, etc. And v ditches on public streets when traveling at speeds less than 25 mph, and during highway dips. The tire hits the engine shroud. This could cause loss of control of vehicle and damage to tires when going at higher speeds. As noted on page 52 of the february 2000 issue of consumer reports, there is an "annoying green reflection from the windshield at night."this is caused by the top of the dashboard not extending far enough to block light from the gauges and the radio from striking the windshield.in addition, when the sun is at just the right angle behind the car, sunlight strikes the bottom of the clear plastic cover for the gauges and is reflected onto the windshield and into the driver's eyes.the same thing happens at night when light from headlights behind the car are reflected from the clear plastic gauge cover onto the windshield and into the driver's eyes. I have found that placing a piece of paper on top of the dash, extending two more inches towards the driver blocks most of the gauge light and reflections from the gauge cover onto the windshield. This is a major design fault.the tops of the dashes on almost all other cars extends further out to block light from the gauges striking the windshield.these lights and especially the reflections that i described can be very bright and very distracting, which could result in accidents.toyota should either provide a new top to their dash or a dash top extender (that has been tested and found to be safe in accidents).in addition they should install a switch for turning off the light from the radio at night (so owner's who find this light reflected on the windshield distracting can turn it off), and they should provide a non-reflective coating for the top of the wood grain trim on the central vent, where sunlight can also be reflected onto the windshield.this light in particular can be extremely bright. All of these reflection in windshield problems are very annoying and distracting and should be repaired as soon as possible.

Engine check light came on.we took it into the toyota dealer who said that the charcoal cannister in the emissions system had to be replaced.the service people also indicated that they have had to replace a lot of cannisters on various toyota models.

Car not under recall campaign !!! no safety defect listed.

For your information, i had a 2000 toyota avalon which i purchased new and was in excellent condition. The car had a power surge, which causedthe car to go through a brick wall at a car wash in clinton, ms. Insurance company totaled the car.since my car was idling at the time and no foot was on the accelerator i believe it was a computer glitch which caused the car to accelerate. I had no control over the car whatso ever. I am being penalized for this. Toyota should be held responsible. I feel fortunate my wife and i were not killed or injured.fortunately no one at the car wash waskilled or injured. Please take action on the problem. It is not the accelerator, it is a computer problem. Your prompt action n this matter with toyota will be greatly appreciated.

*sc

My father was driving down the street in a residential subdivision in my 2000 toyota avalon when the car began to suddenly accelerate on its own. My father lost control as he was unable to brake. He ended up side swiping a tree then hitting a parked car head on pushing it onto someones front lawn. Luckily he was able to stop the car by putting it in neutral and turning the ignition off.

While trying to turnkey inignition switch offdoors and windows will automatically lock without being able to exit vehicle. Consumer also stated that brakes feel spongy, also when driving, the vehicle will sometimes accelerate by itself.

2000 toyota avaloncar unexpectedly accelerated while car was in cruise control. Could not disengage cruise control.check engine light also came on. Condition was verified by teach when serviced by dealer.cleaned and serviced mass air flow sensor and reset. Clean and serviced idle air control valve.

After about 5 years, my 2000 toyota avalon began to experience occasional continued acceleration ("sticking of gas mechanism") when i removed my foot from the gas pedal.being a 230 lb male, i was able to overcome this occurrenceat signal lights or stop signs by applying extreme force on the brake pedal.i've lived with it, but know for certain it is a defect.this happens 3-4 times a year.this is not a "me too" complaint.i suspect this "sticking" acceleration problem is much bigger than reported as many drivers (like me) don't bother.

The windows were blotched which made it difficult to see while driving.

The contact owns a 2000 toyota avalon. While the vehicle was parked, the contact heard an abnormal noise. Upon inspection, the contact noticed the rear window of the vehicle had shattered independently. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was confirmed that the rear window had shattered and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 88,632.

Consumers finger was broken by the window while being rolled up. The consumer had her finger on the window and there was no safety device on the window.nar 8/ 28/02. *scc

On 4/25/2002, middle finger on right hand was broken by power window on right rear side of car.there is no safety device to stop window from rolling up when it meets with resistance from object in window.i am in hand therapy and this is august, it still may be another 6 mos before it is healed.

While driving at 65 mph consumer heard a loud explosion outside of the vehicle.later, the consumer realized that thesun roof exploded outward.

While driving inrainwindshield glass can streak topoint where it becomes difficult to see the road. Contacted dealer ,anddealerwas not willing to do anything.

The reflection onto the windshield appears to be a design defect whereby the instrument cluster was not recessed sufficiently into the cluster to prevent reflection of the dashlights onto the windshield. Similarly, reflection of sunlight onto the windshield is apparent in bright sunlight. Dealer service department as denied any knowledge of the problem. Defect was reported to toyota a few weeks after delivery and i was told that they would correct only if a recall was issued. The impairment of vision is a serious defect and safety hazard at night.

Dashboard lights or sunlight that illuminates the lower right portion of speedometer (140 mph section) and fuel gauge reflect off of windshield at a location in the middle of the driver's line of sight causing a severe driving hazard.

At night there is a green glow from the dash lights that reflects onto the front windshield, obscuring my view to the road ahead.it is impossible to get a clear view of the road and last night i almost hit a pedestrian because my view was obscured.the dealer tells me that there is no way to fix the problem and that i can turn the instrument lights off to solve the problem, but when i tried that it was impossible to read my speed, etc.

Dashboard lighting reflects in the windsheild which interfers with vision. Dealer has tilted the speedometer& raised the gauges forward to change the angle for less glare.toyota doesn't acknowledge this asbeing a problem.

Severe glare into windshield from poor instrument panel design.sun reflects off of instrument panel bazel into windshield at driver eye level blinding driver.at night lighted instrument gauges reflect into windshield creating a distracting "heads up" type display. Instrument panel lights must be almost completely dimmed to avoid reflection problem.this creates another problem of viewing gauges.

Dash board does not extend far enough to block reflection from instrument panel onto front windshield creating a annoying distraction while driving.issue was identified in february 2000 consumer reports review of the 2000 avalon.

While drivingdash lights reflect inwindshield at eye level, giving a blinding glare. Please provide further information.

Reflections onto the windshield at night in poorly lit areas of the car gauges, cowl covering the gauges and wood area around the radio should be extended to prevent reflection.nlm

Indaytime when sunlight reflects off the dashboard it makes a glare on the windshield that is blinding. At night the light from the dash panel reflects on the windshield. Toyota has been contacted.

Instrument panel (portions of speedometer and fuel gauge) reflects in windshield at eye level.at night, this glare impairs view of road, and normal head movements create the impression of something coming into road in front of car, causing reflexive braking or swerving.in daylight, sunlight striking instrument panel reflects in driver's eyes as a blinding flash or band of light.i reported this to manufacturer as part of dispute that included other defects (rattles and squeaks in dash area) and was informed that they would reposition instrument panel per technical service bulletin b0014-0.the repair attempt failed to correct the blinding glare or the other defects.i recently accepted an 2002 avalon as a rental car and was stunned to find that this dangerous condition persists in the 2002 model.

Glare on windshield from glass over instrument panel. Worse at night when dash lights are on, had to dim lights to see safely. Can also have glare daytime whether sunny or not. This is in my direct line of vision and can be a safety hazzard. Please advise if there has been a solution to this problem as i have consulted haley toyota in roanoke va and they say they have never heard of the problem. I have seen several other complaints of this nature on your website.

Passenger side tire shakes till i reach 45mph it stops

Large bulge on tread side of tire - no blowout.probably steel belt separation. Felt like unbalanced tire in rear.image attached.did not hit any potholes.was the second tire of another complaint of a similar tire filed 8/6/2016.

After driving two hours my wife arrived at her destination and found one tire nearly flat.the tire was fine, the leak was actually through a pinhole leak in the steel rim of the wheel.no one was hurt but a serious accident could have occurred.we believe this wheel had a manufacturer's defect from day one, but the dealer did not replace the wheel because he said it was beyond the 3-year 36000 mile warranty.
