On march 27th, 2013 i had an accident on a parkway rear ended. My whole suv front part damaged and the airbag did not deployed. I was driving around 50 miles per hour and a commercial van in front of me stopped suddenly and i tried to stop the car, however it didn't and rear ended. Admitted to hospital emergency and released. Contacted toyota few times about the airbag issue and not received a good answer or they don't even want to hear the complaint.toyota 4runner - 2006total damage to this car - insurance estimate $9400.00.

Toyota 4runner - 2006 total damage to this car - insurance estimate $9400.00. * because of my complaint to safecar.gov, toyota conducted an inspection on my vehicle on 5/17/13. The inspector send me an edr report and it showing airbag not commanded. ( unable to read / understand all other numbers on that report). The inspector informed me that, toyota will contact me about the report. As of today no contact or any informations from toyota about the edr report.

The driver airbag warning light is on.i've read a lot of recalls for my vehicle, but the dealer said this part was not recalled.i was hoping you could inform me if this part has been recalled and if so what would be my next steps.

Takata recall ..... After receiving toyota's official u.s. Postal notice, i called my local toyota dealer (autonation on w sahara, las vegas, nv) to get this issue fixed.after not hearing back from the person who promised to return my call, i called again six hours later and was given some b.s. Story, but was told it was being ordered and would be at the dealership the next day.about an hour later, i received an e-mail from my dealer, autonation, that i need to call them to make an appt. To fix the recall issue.the person i spoke to (not the same one as earlier in the day) seemed to not understand.i repeated the issue (scenario as written above) to which this woman, again, didn't comprehend.i told her i would read what was sent to me about making an appt.as i was reading to her what was sent to me, she hung up on me.i then called and asked to speak to the gm of the dealership.i left a message for him to call me back.no such call-back has happened.is this a tactic that's employed on a regular basis?i contacted toyota's corporate rep and gave that person the actions i went through.she said she'd forward this issue to the customer relations person at the dealership.i, again, doubt i will be contacted.if i do, i'm sure i'll get some b.s. To protect that employee, as is done by police to protect their own.i want some action and i'm hoping this message will find its way to a source which will look into this.

We were stopped in traffic in our 2006 toyota 4runner. We were slammed into from behind by a car traveling around 45mph. Thus we slammed into the car infront of us. Our airbags did not deploy, and the passenger seatbelt did not lock up, thus causing severe injuries to the passenger. There is around $11,000 damage to our truck.

The airbag light appeared while i was driving, i was googling why this happened and came across a forum talking about similar incidents. I was reading that after the light appeared most of the same year and model the airbags are exploding while driving. I am concerned with my safety and my family's safety. I also read the airbags were recalled for 4runners. Please i need to make sure everything will be fine while driving my truck.thank you!

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 16v065000 (air bags) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact called a dealer and an appointment was scheduled however, the technician informed that the recall remedy parts were on back order. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner.the contact was traveling 5 mph and exiting a residential driveway when the side impact air bags deployed without warning.the contact did not suffer any injuries from the air bag deployment.the contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint.the manufacturer sent a representative to inspect the vehicle who advised that the air bags deployed due to the vehicle experiencing a roll over. The contact disagreed and advised that he had not been involved in a crash when the air bags erroneously deployed. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer provided no further assistance.the contact stated that he did not feel safe driving the vehicle.the failure mileage was 133,000.

Previous complaints, 10565915,10514762. Because of my complaints to safecar.gov, toyota send me a report of the edr inspection. As per the inspection reports, toyota says i was driving 50 mile per hour when the traffic stopped suddenly in front of me. And i stepped on the brakes but the vehicle did not have enough time to stop and i hit the vehicle in front of me in the rear. The vehicle was inspected on may 17 2013, because i filed a complaint through safecar.gov. When i had the accident i contacted toyota few times to inspect the vehicle while the vehicle was in the repair shop. However toyota refuses to do that.now the edr report from toyota says, vehicle appeared to have been already repaired, so making a complete determination as to why the airbags did not deploy cannot be done. That letter also asked me to send any pictures of my damaged vehicle. I send the pictures to toyota and now another letter saying, after review of the photographs of the damage, this was not a direct frontal impact but an impact directed to the left front of the vehicle. There was insufficient abrupt forward deceleration of the vehicle to deploy the airbags. My insurance company estimated damage to the whole front part of the vehicle and paid $9300.00 to repair the vehicle. I believe toyota don't want to say that it's the airbag fault, because then they have to recall all the 4runners to repair the airbags. Anyway i am still alive, and i don't want any other owners to go through this kind of tragic accident. Hope safecar.gov will watch toyota for its failure in the airbag safety of this vehicles. Thank you safecar.gov.

The contact was owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 35 mph, the air bag warning indicator illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the air bag spiral cable would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

Takata air bag recall. We received a letter ftom toyota in torrance ca informing us our matrix had a faulty air bag and should be replaced. A further note came on 8/18/2017 to contact www.autoairbagssettlement.com

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 16v065000 (air bags) was received in june of 2016. After contacting the dealer on multiple occasions, the contact was informed that the parts needed for the recall remedy were still not available and no estimated time for receiving the parts could be provided. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

I took my toyota tacome 2006 truck to the dealer from springfield, virginia. A few weeks ago my air bag light came up on the front where the mileage is.

Nothing has happened but there was a recalland there is no fix yet

The air bag warning lamp went off around 145k miles while i was driving. Went to a fred anderson toyota charleston, sc and the advisor stated that it was just the lamp and that the airbag is still functional. Approximately after 200 miles, the light reappeared, but as the toyota advisor stated it was still functional, i ignored it. At my next check up at leith toyota raleigh, nc. (153,953 miles) the advisor at that time told me that it was a failed spiral cable assembly. Come to find out there actually has been recalls on the spiral cable assembly. As stated in the toyota recall ("the steering column assembly in the involved vehicles contains a spiral cable assembly with electrical connections to the driver's airbag module that could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned. If this occurs, the air bag warning lamp will illuminate. In addition, the driver's air bag could become deactivated, causing it to not deploy in the event of a crash"). I just want this to be reviewed promptly considering that the recall that was made did not reach out to my model. This is a life threatening situation that has to be solved immediately and this calls for a recall!these two urls contain the exact situation that i have experienced. The airbag light in my '06 toyota 4runner is on and won't turn off even after letting it idle for "6 seconds" as recommended by the recent letter from toyota that i received. I have been informed that an official fix/recall for the airbags will not be available until september 2016. The takata airbags have killed and permanently maimed people thus far. Fingers crossed that i can make it until september without being killed/injured by my car.

Takata inflators, abs. Purchased vehicle used 08/12/2016 the following mil codes were cleared by selling dealership.c1223, p0456, b1150, cr123, c1241, b1152. Needed repair immediately, passed state inspection even needing the following repairs, both front axles, serp belt, sway bar link and rear brakes.08/24/2016 vehicle repaired by selling dealer and returned with flat tire,i had it towed to tire garage because spare was too old and incorrect size.after i picked up from tire repairi made an appointment for an unrepaired safety recall from 2012on the abs at a local dealership.prior to service appointment i was driving over a speed bump and the vehicle would not drive over bump, abs lights came on and vehicle rolled backwards.had towed to toyota dealer for service(i have receipt for tow)a couple days later dealer said recall was completed but would not provide any documentation for repairs. That dealership broke a lug stud on the front tire inbut did not repair it. They said its ok to drive on 5 lugs its a 6 lug rim. I then brought the vehicle to another toyota dealer for repairs because the vehicle started rolling backwards on inclines and not accelerating. Very scary because i almost rolled back into cars, also tire pressure light was on but all tires were inflated. They had it from 09/12/2016-09/26/2016. Unfortunately could not duplicate concern but did repair the lug stud, tire pressure sensor and recalibrated the abs and airbag light(i was not informed until picked up about the airbag). I also had an oil change.vehicle having issues as of todayright turns i hear a loud clunking sound and wobble when hitting bumps on highway speeds..the ball joints might be bad. I can see them covered in grease and have play. I am concerned that the vehicle is unsafe and was in an undisclosed major accident prior to purchase. Next app is not until 10/24.

While reviewing the 2006 toyota 4runner complaints i found that consumer complaint: odi case number: 10179170 is actually a complaint for a 2006 toyota rav4 and is misfiled and may want to be corrected.thanks---dave cizek

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner.while driving 35 mph, the front end of the contact's vehicle crashed into another vehicle.the air bags failed to deploy.the front end of the vehicle was damaged and towed.a police report was filed.the driver was wearing a seat belt, but sustained injuries to his head due to it striking the steering wheel.the cause of the failure was unknown.the failure mileage was 7,000 and current mileage was 21,000.

- while driving his 2006 toyota rav4 at 60 mph the contact felt a jerking as if the vehicle were struck from the rear.he believes that the vehicle''s 4 wheel drive engaged causing him to lose control of the vehicle.the vehicle spun several times and flipped over multiple times coming to a rest on the vehicle''s roof.the airbag did not deploy.the driver was injured.the contact will have the vehicle, pictures, and a police report available.

While driving down a city street we smelled something burning.we pulled over to a vacant parking lot and put the car in park, before we could get of the car the back window exploded into lots of small pieces. Luckily no one was sitting in the back seat because glassed landed in the back seat as well as the parking lot. We noticed that the defrost button was on at the time of the explosion.the weather was cool at approx. 47 degrees on january 3, 2019 around 8:45 pm. I did get the glass replaced by safelite.the window installer confirmed that the wires for the defroster had melted. I did call toyota to report the problem, but they said it was beyond their extended warranty enhancement program deadline of april 30, 2018. Clearly toyota is aware of the problem because they did offer prior to april 30, 2018 an extended program that would help to reimburse customers whose window exploded.no recalls were provided for possible window explosions for 2006 toyota 4runners.

The plastic slider for the sunroof malfunctioned releasing the sunroof so when i went to open the sunroof while driving the airflow caught underneath the sunroof lifting it up and shooting it off and hurtling into traffic behind me and innocent highway drivers, and icompletely shocked did not know where it landed or who it landed on. Now i donā€™t have any protection from the weather and my headliner is coming off due to the wind. Now i have to save money or go to a pick and pull and figure out how to get this fixed before it causes more damage to my vehicle. I do not know if it caused any injuries or crashes or if anyone got hurt being that i was going down the highway at the time of the incident.

1.) while driving the vehicle is very difficult to steer.the lastest incident occurred while traveling on the highway.the was constantly swaying and pulling to directionforcing me to grip the steering wheel ; pulling it in opposite direction so tightly that my wrist were throbbing.once i exited the highway and came to a stop, the steering wheel turned almost 180 degrees by itself. I took it to a sears service center and the mechanic could not find anything wrong.prior to my road trip, i had my vehicle checked out and nothing was found out of sorts.this as occurred on several other occasions.2.) my vehicle will lose power if the key is left in the ignition for a brief period of time without the vehicle being started.it will also loose power if the vehicle doors are open, even if the keys are not in the ignition.i have to get a "jump start" often.i've had my battery replaced and the problem checked out at the my local toyota dealer but the cause of the problem could not be detected.the latest incident occurred while i was waiting for a service representative to assist me at the toyota dealership.i pulled into the service area, waiting for the service representative with the key in the ignition, but the car was not running.it could've been more than 5 minutes before the the representative got in my truck and tried to start it; but it was dead.it had to be jumped started.the battery was checked , as it usually is when this occurs; and it had full power.

2006 4runner rear glass exploded/shattered after using defrost - was denied reimbursement despite this being a known issue and faulty defrost connector. After dropping my 5 year old son off for school on 1/15/2021, i pulled up to a stopsign and heard a loud crash from the back of the car. I looked in the rear view mirror and the back glass had completely shattered and pieces were coming off into the back seat. Nothing had hit the window from the inside or outside - this happened spontaneously. Right before this happened, i had the rear defrost on for approximately 10 minutes to clear the rear glass while driving. The defrost was off when the glass exploded. I contacted my local toyota dealership who informed me that this was a known issue but that the extended warranty coverage for this had ended on april 30, 2018.toyota released a tsb (technical service bulletin) and offered an extended warranty and free replacement for vehicle owners who experienced this problem starting in 2017 but is since expired. The connector for thedefrost located in the rear glass is found to be faulty and can short out or overheat, causing the glass to shatter. Being that this is a major safety concern and thankfully my 5 year old son wasn't in the backseat at the time, avoiding injury from the glass, i decided to contact toyota customer experience. A case was opened, however, they wouldn't offer any compensation or assistance with getting the glass replaced. We are without a vehicle until this can be repaired and i am now forced topay for it on my own since toyota isn't agreeing to help at all.

On my way to the grocery store, my back window blew out while driving.it was a very loud pop! which scared the daylights out of me!i looked in the review-mirror and the back window completely shattered.there was nobody around and i was driving too slow for it to have been a rock or debris.i was driving in san antonio texas near utsa blvd. In the turning lane, was in motion at a slow speed as i was pulling up to a red light.the mechanic at safelight auto said that it had to do with the electrical and saved the piece of where there was a short causing the blast.as i walked out the door, a gentleman asked if that was my toyota as he was there for the exact same issue for the same year make and model toyota.

After noticing ongoing problems with my fuel gauge on a 2006 4runner with less than 60k miles, we brought the car into the toyota dealer. When the toyota mechanic pulled the fuel pump assembly out of the gas tank, he discovered a burned and melted wiring harness that sits directly inside the tank. This is a significant safety concern that should be addressed as it deals with an unregulated amount of heat and electricity in close proximity to the gas tank. The mechanic wrote down on my statement that he, "found fuel pump wiring has heat damage from [electrical] arcing." i have taken pictures and will send them if requested. Thank you.

Rear hatch window shattered due to overheating of defroster.overheated while in motion.shattered after parked.

I am the owner of a 2006 toyota 4 runner (mileage 66, 476 mls).i have been having the following experiencevsc trac, check engine, and car anti skid light up simultaneously on my dash.it is very concerning because i am beginning to hear about other complaints of the same nature.

I recently purchased a new 2006 toyota 4 runner. I have had nothing but motor transmission, electrical failures. I have only had my vehicle for 1 month and anything and every thing has gone wrong. I even had to give my daughter cpr on the side of the road due to carbon monoxide inhalation. She went into respiratory failure do to this she has severe asthma.

-the contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. While reversing out of her garage, the contact engaged the brakes but the vehicle did not slow or respond. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealership as the vehicle would not move. The dealer stated that the electrical chip had burned out; the vehicle was repaired at that time. The current and failure mileages were approximately 128,000. Updated 06/17/10.*ljthe dealer replaced the abs actuator and cylinder assembly. Updated 10/05/10

1/21/17 approx nooni was driving when i began smelling burning wires. I looked around, the back-hatch and cargo area was filling with smoke. I pulled over and opened the back-hatch door and the two right passenger doors. I began opening the hood when a loud explosion occurred. It sounded like the impact of a traffic accident. I ran to the back of the vehicle. The back-hatch window had exploded. Broken glass was everywhere in the street and inside the vehicle. If anyone had been inside the vehicle or standing behind it when this occurred the would have been seriously injured. 1/23/17i was contacted by south coast toyota. Toyota's technician observed burned wiring and electrical motor in the rear hatch door electrical system. Approximately 1900 for repairs to replace eco, motor and glass. I asked for and received the contact info for toyota corporate office.

Cel vscoff vsc trac. Had it checked, was told #6 cylinder plug or coil, replaced coil and all spark plugs .cel light went off the next day but came back on following day. Noticed a sound of water moving in a pipe or what sounded like in a pipe behind dash for a second or so. Was idling and running rough while driving, engine was shaking. Went on some web sites read some comments from other owners ,bad head gasket. 4runner has been well taken care of never abused only 8 years old, normal miles i think, not very happy with this. Bad design of cylinder head. I own a 94 4by 4 pick up bought new 250,000 miles lot a original parts still on truck runs very well except for bad rot on chassis happy with truck was very good to me as was i to it. I also have a 01 tundra sr5 bought 2 years ago with 132,000 runs well, 02 sensor replaced pass. Front went well but now have to replace pass. Rear impossible since rot will not permit me to have to replace cat converter, noticed lots of rot on frame as well as other areas under truck. Have loved toyotas till now only had good things to say about them, starting to have second thoughts.

The secondary air induction pump (aip) and switching valves failed on my 2006 4runner limited with v8. This is the same issue that is seen on toyota sequoias and tundras. Toyota has issued a special extended warranty for this system on those vehicles, but not on the 4 runners, even though the defective systems / parts are the same. Toyota customer case # 1409160408. This is a > $2000 repair to basically clear the check engine code and allow me to pass state inspection. I believe there should be a recall on this system or at least have toyota cover all vehicles with this defective system, not just certain higher-volume model years.

I was driving down the highway using my rear defroster when my back window shattered without cause, it sounded like a gunshot. The shock caused me and the driver behind me to both swerve almost causing two wrecks.

Driving approx 40 mph towards home and rear window exploded, shattered glass all over. It sounded like an m80 in the back of my truck. Had window repair guys come and they showed me defroster connectors were burnt out. I did have defroster setting on at the time of incident. I called toyota but they wouldn't do anything to assist. My concern was if my dogs were in the back, as we usually take them to the park, they could have been seriously injured. I did have a major anxiety attack. If this happened on the highway it could have easily caused an accident.

Yesterday i took my 3yr old to pre-school, i did leave my car running as i usually do when i drop him off, my heater was going as well as my defrost as it was a cold morning. When i came out approximately 7-8 minutes later i see that my back window is completely shattered. I am completely surprised and a little freaked out since my child was just sitting in the back seat where i also found glass. As i am cleaning up the glass on the ground in front of my child's pre-school i smelt something burning in the rear window in the inside. Turns out my electrical unit that powers my defrosting heater in the rear window was totally burned up. The glass repair shop that replaced my window so i could at least drive my car said this could have been extremely worst as there looked to be a small fire in the back paneling within those wires (the connectors were fried). I just bought my car in march, less than a year ago, so this is extremely irritating and scary. I plan on taking it to toyota so they can review the electrical problem, but i have already been told by my extended warranty people that this may not be a covered problem under my warranty. Why should have to pay for something i had no control over?? what if i was driving and this happen, my 3yr old and myself could have been seriously hurt and or someone driving behind us. This could have potentially been a very serious car accident. I hope that toyota will investigate this problem for possible re-call as i have seen several other complaints on here of the exact same issue happening.

Toyota case #[xxx]this is part of a message sent toyota. My daughter experienced a burning smell inside her car on her way home from work. Within 15 minutes of noting the smell, her rear window exploded forcing her to pull over and call us for assistance.when we arrived we started the car and did not experience any of the burning smell she noted so we drove the car directly to toyota of huntington beach for service.the service writer discovered that the rear defroster wiring had shorted out which was believed to have overheated the rear window causing the explosion. We authorized repairs accordingly and confirmed we wanted to be certainthe electrical system was in good order. We subsequently were informed by the service writerthat the defroster system and window had been repaired and checked out to be functional, with the system automatically turning off within 15 minutes; however, it was left to ouroption to leave the system disconnected. On questioning why, the writer advised that he, nor the service manager and the head mechanic had any experience with this sort of malfunction though it was their recommendation to leave it disconnected. We agreed in the interest of safety.we have since discovered on various web based blogs that other customers have experienced precisely the same problem. Links were submitted to toyota.as discussed with your corporate representative, the cost of the repairs were an unwelcome surprise, however, the overwhelming concern is wondering if we have placed our daughter in a car, that may have inherent design problems rendering it unsafe for her travels to work, school, and vacations. Our 2006 toyota 4runner with a v8 engine has lost accelerator response on two occasions in the first year we have owned it.the check engine, vsc and trac lights all came on and the vehicle would not respond to accelerator inputs.the first occurrence was july 2006 when the vehicle had approximately 3800 miles on it.the throttle control module was changed and the problem seemed to be fixed until it happened again in february 2007 when the vehicle had approximately 9800 miles.the vehicle was in the shop from february until august 2007.toyota replaced the throttle control module again, then the accelerator pedal and the engine control computer, all of which did not fix the vehicle. They finally replaced the entire wire harness in august 2007 which has the vehicle working again.we have asked toyota to re-purchase the vehicle from us because we are concerned about the safety and reliability of this vehicle. If this loss of power were to happen again while on the highway it could cause a serious accident! toyota has refused to re-purchase or replace the vehicle.please look into this problem so that other toyota 4 runner owners and future owners are aware of this potential safety problem with these vehicles.

The wiring harness to the rear abs wheel sensor fails. This must be a common problem as many people have been looking for this part. A warning light appears on the dash, it also prevents the vehicle from being put into gear. You have to use the override switch to put it into gear.

2006 toyota 4runner check engine light disables traction control and vehicle stability control when on.for instance the car needed a gas cap.so the check engine light came on as well as the traction control and vsc light.icy conditions and having something such as this fail because of poor wiring could be very dangerous.

Traction control light came on, check engine light came on and vehicle would move only slowly. Turned car off and on several times, tried engaging 4 wheel drive and other drive functions, tried accelerating, but vehicle would only move slowly. After turning off and on one more time the vehicle drove as normal but all the warning lights stayed on. This happened in a parking lot while going slowly. Mechanic has indicated that this resulted from a failure of the air injection pump and air valve, which apparently for some reason turns off traction control. This is a common enough problem on tundras and sequoias that there is an "extended warranty" offered on these vehicles. I do not know if the air injection pump and air valves on 4 runners are the same design or same model, but there are numerous complaints on the internet of the same problem for 4 runners as for tundras.

Timing belt cover is leaking oil with 36000 miles. After researching online this is a common problem.was covered under warranty but not now. They gave me an estimate of 1900.00 to replace gasket an water pump. Leaks oil while parked in garage.

Driving in office parking structure, traveled two floor levels and down two parking structure ramps.at second down ramp, made a right turn to next floor level, and within 21+ feet (with the driver's foot still on the brakes), the suv suddenly accelerated at a high rate of speed which caused the driver to lose control, sideswipe one concrete column, fishtail within three parking stalls, and collide with a second concrete column, which stopped the vehicle's acceleration.the suv is a total loss.injuries are from deployment of the air bag and seat belt.

When at stopped at a street light or just stop in gear with the brake applied, car will jump forward to a point were i may hit a car in front of me. Second, radiator fan hits the shroud. Caused by broken weld at the motor mounts. Which can cause a fire. Dealer ship in riverside was contacted and they can't do anything about it.

The entire frame is rotted and full of holes . Suspension is in danger of detaching spontaneously. The odometer has been rolled back over one hundred thousand.

Exhaust is being pulled into back window when cracked and the vehicle resets the air flow to recycle.i crack the back window to allow heat to escape and had the air flow set on fresh air.i make a stop and get back into the car the window is still cracked.some time later there is a smell of exhaust and i realize the flow was reset and fumes are getting pulled into the vehicle.the biggest problem is my child is in the back seat and she is already choking when the odor gets to me.

2006 toyota 4runner.i was quoted $1,500 for a time cover oil leak repair in lakeland, fl.there was a tsb issued 2007 (eg049-07).apparently, most of the charge is for labor, the replacement part is not expensive.i understand the avalon has the same problem. This repair cost is astronomical, especially considering that it's a commonly known problem in toyotas - possibly from poor design.i don't think the consumer should have to absorb the cost of this repair.hopefully, something is being done to help the consumer.

Steering has knocking sound while turning left or right, it started at about 62000 miles. Also replaced coil pack #2 and # 4 at 49000 miles had another go out a year later, delership told me to replace the remaining 4 coil packs, by only replacing the corruped one will cause the ohers to fail.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner.the contact stated that the vehicle would become wobbly when driving at speeds over 60 mph. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told hat the hydro-booster pump needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the check engine light was also illuminated. The dealer stated that the catalytic converter and manifold also needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was unknown, but the current mileage was 61,000.

2006 4runner sport edition 4wd -toyota- 38k miles on vehicle.all the bolts that hold the clutch assembly tothe a/c compressor is rusting out to the point that the compressor will come apart during driving and damage other components and probable cause accident. This was notice at ~24k and it's getting worst. Presently, all the bolts head is almost gone and apart from the rusting bolts there is a second part on the clutch assemble that is also rusting.toyota will not accept it under there warranty.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated when accelerating there was an abnormal sulfur smell emitting from the interior and exterior of the vehicle. The contact stated the catalytic converter was previously replaced and stated the failure had returned. The manufacturer advised that the contact have a diagnostic test performed before the vehicle could be repaired. The dealer advised they were awaiting approval from the manufacturer before proceeding with repairs. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure and current mileage was 19,200.

Highway merge ramp at almost full throttle twice, once passing another vehicle on highway at also high throttle usage, accelerator pedalwas stuck open vehicle continued to accelerate felt like cruise control was engaged but wasn't. I stepped on brakes but that didn't help, i then hit the accelerator pedal with my right foot and the pedal went back to normal.

Exhaust system. Catalytic converter. Smell of sulfur/rotten eggs when accelerating especially going up a hill.took car to dealer and they replaced catalytic converters.a few months later the problem persists. It seems now it does this more often.

Toyota 2006 4runner 4wd limited discharges a sulfur smell when i accelerate, especially when i am going up a hill.the smell is strong even when my windows areup.i'm also concerned about the smell being a health issue.i purchased the car brand new in february 2006.

When my 2006 toyota 4runner is running or when acceleration a rotten egg smell comes from the catalytic converter. I have taken the vehicle in and the dealer claims there is nothing they can do. I have never had this problem on any other vehicles i have owned.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 60 mph on normal road conditions, the surf board strapped to the luggage rack flew off.the contact noticed the rear cross bar detached from the rack side rails.no warning signals were observed.the dealership and the manufacturer did not accept responsibility because the front cross bar moved towards the rear hitting the rear cross bar forcing its detachment.the cross bars were adjusted to the side bars by thumb screws.the contact expressed concern because the board could hit another vehicle with fatal consequences.the contact was also convinced the thumb screws were not safe to strap any load on the luggage rack.

Just bought a 2006 4runner and did not think to check underneath for anything.i noticed on the passenger side of the frame huge rust spots, it's rusting from inside the frame out to the surface. It's bad. I googled what i should do to fix it because now i'm out 7k for what i thought was a reliable suv. They sell patch kits online requiring me to purchase the kits and have them welded to the frame by a professional after they clean the rust completely. That's expensive. Toyota should definitely take this seriously and not fight this claim. No truck that year should rust this bad. In fact i've bought a 77 chevy c10 that was a farm truck most it's life and it did not have any frame rust what so ever. There's multiple claims on facebook and other 4runner specific groups online that have this same issue. A recall needs to happen. What if i didn't notice and i let my wife and kids ride in the suv and the frame snaps in half down the highway? you recalled other models do to frame rust, but not the same year 4runner. Please help us 4runner owners fix this because all in all it's a great suv toyota makes some of the best product out there, we just want to keep them on the road.

Vehicle is a polaris sportsman 800 that option is not available later in this form so i put toyota. On august 4 2007 i began an atv ride/camping trip with two other individuals that was planned to go through 8/11. We stopped for lunch on day 1 and after several minutes i heard a strange hissing sound coming from my atv. I removed the gas cap at which time large volume of fuel was ejected (like a geyser) about 12-18" straight up. Thankfully i was still wearing eye protection because the fuel sprayed my face, hand, arms and torso. I initially thought that the vent hose leading from the gas tank must be clogged or pinched allowing the fuel tank to over pressurize. I checked the vent hose and it was clear and then positioned it so it could be observed. Throughout the remainder of the trip the gas tank continued to hiss and build of pressure and fuel would continuously leak, bubble, shoot out of the vent hose both when the atv was moving or not. When the atv was idling and pressure was built up, i would slowly release pressure in the tank by slowly opening the gas cap the atv would die. Brought the atv to the dealership who could not replicate the problem and therefore would not or could not fix it. I related to the authorized polaris dealership that my atv idling in their service department does not fairly replicate the environment that caused the fuel problem. I am prepared to provide your agency with sworn statements from witnesses, photos, more detailed dates, times and names of individuals i attempted to resolve this issue with at the polaris dealership and customer service.i do not know if this is an isolated incident but considering how my concerns were brushed aside by the manufacture under the guise of being "unable to replicate" it could be wide spread. It goes without question that the nature of this problem presents a very real danger to consumers. Thank you, in advance, for your consideration and assistance in this matter.

Thank you.

My vehicle has extensive frame rust on the right rear lower trailing arm mount and the frame above the the mount is completely rusted away. The only thing holding the frame together in this area is the lower trailing arm mount weldment. The frame behind and above the lower trailing arm mount weldment, on the inside of the frame, is rusted out leaving only about half of the frame in that area intact. The frame also has rusted out areas in the front at the body mounts and forward of the front suspension. Also, the rear fuel tank strap is completely rusted apart and the front fuel tank strap is rusted. Frame/suspension failure and fuel tank movement are very serious safety issues that shouldn't exist on this vehicle.

Frame is rusting apartrear lower trailing arm section has already been patched by previous owner upper trailing arm connection point to frame crossmember has perished due to rust if the other side breaks the rear axle can flex excessively causing control problems toyotaā€™s service campaign for other trucks should not have omitted the 4runner which shares many identical design characteristics

I purchased this vehicle used from a dealer in 2014 with low miles on it and it appeared to be in great shape. The undercarriage was sprayed with what i thought was a coating to protect against rust. I realize now the dealer was probably trying to hide the rust problems. The coating flaked off a short time later and ever since, i too have been plagued by the frame and other component rust problems.had to replace the exhaust, running boards, sway bar and several other things that all rusted off on the undercarriage. My skid plates are about to fall off next. Just had my brakes replaced and the shop noticed a couple areas where frame now has holes through it and says it likely won't pass state inspection which will be coming due soon. The rust problems with these 4runners seems like a big problem that toyota should address. I'm going to have to put a bunch more money into fixing this vehicle or be left with a worthless piece of junk i can't drive and will be taking a big loss on.

Dt*: the contact stated when the rear lift gate was opened the automatic open/close mechanism failed and closed on the contact's right hand.the 4th and 5th digits of the ring finger and pinky were crushed and the 5th digit of the pinky of the right hand was hyperextended and may have been dislocated.there was possible nerve damage to the fingers and swelling to the right arm.the contact went to the emergency room. A photo and x-rays were taken. The manufacturer was notified.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the trunk failed to remain closed. The dealer stated that the latch mechanism was completely rusted and needed to be replaced. In addition, there was extensive rust under the hood, which prevented the installation of the two bolts to secure the bug visor on the hood. The front calipers were rusted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 44,000.

Soon after purchasing my 2006 4runner v8 4wd i was pulling my boat and noticed when i was coming to a traffic light and braking that the engine was increasing in rpm and it became very difficult to stop.had the traffic in front of me not been clear there would have been an accident.this happened several more times over the next few months, often when pulling the boat but not always.i later realized that the root cause of the problem was the proximity of the gas and break petals.when i pull the boat, and sometime other times, i wear flip-flops which are fairly wide and flat.the flip-flops are wide enough to accidentally bridge the two petals while driving.my 2001 4runner never had this problem.i have not had this issue recur since i stopped wearing flip-flops when driving the 4runner.the only reason i am reporting this is that i have read of sudden acceleration issues with toyota's and thought this information might help the investigation.this problem appeared to be a sudden acceleration issue since the rpm's went up and the brakes could not stop the vehicle.i don't know if other toyota's have the same proximity issue between the brake petal and gas petal.we have not seen this same issue on our 2004 sienna.

I was backing out of a parking space, in reverse, when the engine began to rev. I hit the brakes and shifted into neutral. It revved at about 4000 rpm for a few seconds, then slowed down to a speed faster than normal idle. I put it back into reverse with brake firmly applied, at which point it returned to normal performance.

During snowstorm in 4 wheel drive mode; 4 wheel drive system would not engage due to failure of add - auto disconnecting differential actuator.this led to extremely dangerous safety hazard with vehicle sliding across overhead bridge.no warning of failure, just blinking 4 wheel drive indicator on dashboard.toyota should be ordered to replace this part for free on all 4 wheel drive 4runners.this part has also been out-of-stock in the usa due to extremely high failure rate.note: failure occurs when vehicle is in driving mode in winter weather which represents a major safety hazard to toyota 4runner drivers and occupants.

I was driving my wife 2006 toyota 4runner sr5 approximately 55-60 miles per hours on 88 west in california and the suv experience sudden acceleration pass 70 miles per hours. I then step on the brakes as hard as i could but the suv continues to accelerate faster than 70 miles per hour. While my foot is on the brake pedal at all time but the suv could not slow down. The suv then struck the rear of a pick up truck in front. After the impact, my suv continued approximately a half mile and then i was able to slow down and bring to a stop in the right lane. Toyota down load the data on the suv black box on 3/18/2014 and sent a letter to me and my wife this week stating that the gas pedal is normal.

Excessive vehicle vibration.from review of www.tacomaworld.com forums this is a fairly common occurence with 2nd generation tacomas (2005 to 2015).it seems to stem from the split driveshaft models (prerunners and 4x4s).in some cases it has resulted in vehicles dropping the driveshafts.in my truck, in one day it went to fine to what felt like the worst wheel imbalance i had ever felt.i immediately had my wheels balance and there was no improvement.that's when i went to the forums.also, http://www.tacomahq.com/3392/toyota-tacoma-driveline-vibration-tsb-2005-2014/

I have a 2006 toyota 4 runner that has been developing excessive rust flaking on the rear axle housing, brake components, frame and rear suspension componets.we have had warranty work performed approx. 1 year ago and the mechanics at toyota stated they needed to replace or repair various transmission lines before they would return the vehicle to my wife. I asked themwhat am i suppose to do about all the rust problems and they really didnt have a answer and said i need to talk to the service manager that was not there at the time. I have made every attempt to radicate this issue that has been getting worse over time. Vehicle is garage kept and was purchased new as we are the only owner of this vehicle. Myself andeveryone else know toyota knows about this problem and refused to do anything about it. My fear is that we are on a trip and have catastrophic failure of one or more components and getting in a accident. There was no accident yet.

The secondary air induction pump (aip) and switching valves failed on my 2006 4runner limited with v8. This is the same issue that is seen on toyota sequoias and tundras. I just purchased my 2006 4runner and decided to take it to the shop where i work to have them do an oil change and fluid check, the mechanics brought me back and told me that my frame is rusting from the inside out and they think that in a matter of 2 yrs tops the frame will be rotted and collapse . I was terrified and in a panic my husband had taken my 4runner it to his friends garage and had the whole underneath undercoated. I called a toyota dealer and asked if there was anything that toyota can do and he told me that a lot of 4runner owners have been calling about their rotted frames and he told me that it's omly a matter of time when the 4runners will be recalled because they share the same frame as the tacoma's i am so sick with fear and i just can't understand why they would delay this recall when it is a risk of human lives i drive my kids in this 4runner and every time i go over a bump i am scared please help us make toyota do the right thing before people lose their lives i am not rich i saved up all my paychecks to buy this vehicle and now i'm stuck

A couple of months after purchasing the new 4 runner listed above, i began to feel a clunk from the transmission when coming to a stop. The dealership said they were aware of it but could do nothing because there was no service bulletin published referencing the problem. They said a service bulletin existed on the lexus gx470, which used the same drivetrain. To this date the vehicle still has the same problem, not only can you hear it but the inertia on occasions pushes the vehicle forward. Service bulletins are 00207 and 00106, nhtsa id# are 10021759 and 10021707.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that oil was discovered in the driveway where the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was taken to tarbox toyota (3671 quaker ln, north kingstown, ri 02852, (401) 884-5438) where the contact was informed that the rear differential was leaking and the frame was rotted. The contact also mentioned that the vehicle could not be repaired due to the excessive rust on the frame. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 168,595.

My toyota 4 runner entire frame and connecting components is completely rusted out and crumbling. The car isnā’t safe to drive at all. Toyota is aware of this as its common and no recall is in place. When driving, one tire is completely barely hanging on as the frame is failing all over. The car wobbles and swerves and feels as if it will come apart at any time. This frame was never treated properly when installed. If you went over 50 the car could fall apart and would be extremely dangerous.

After only a couple of years started rusting pretty badlyon frame, crossmembers and front and rear differentials.also stabilizers skid plates and basically anything under thetruck. Thought it was only surface rust until parts were cracking and stabilizers fell off truck. Rear end was ready to drop off truck! truck only has 81,000 miles and looks brandnew. Wanted to keep another 10 years! my wife and kid used this and could have crashed them both! frame rusted from inside out and dealer deemed undriveable this week! truck valued at $13-15,000! dealer wont warranty and not under tacoma and sequoia recalls! same frame issues toyota! recallthe 4 runner toyota!major danger of frame looking ok fromoutside but crumbling and falling apart while driving. Have been a mechanic and body person all my life and never seenrusting and crumbling of a frame in chunks falling off! wake up toyota, recall the 4runner or fix my frame! cannot drive truck!

Yes! i've been having a steering problem. "unintended veering" that i began to notice a month after i bought the vehicle (then at 13,000 miles). Something is causing the car to wander at high speeds. I also began to notice that after crossing a bridge (a lot of bridges on the way to work) the steering wheel will jerk back and forth really fast, which can be frightening. At other times it can seem to pulse. If you let go of the wheel the vehicle will veer to the left towards on-coming traffic (had it aligned twice -- still happens!) the dealership does not notice it when they drive it! so i eventually bought 4 brand-new tires and had it aligned again (all at the dealership at my expense) and i still have the problem. Anybody else that drives the vehicle notices it -- except people at the dealership! i was told i would lose $6,000 if i returned it. I did not, as that would set me back considerably. My father had just died and i was paying off the house too!

We own a 2006 toyota 4runner - during the first year we took it in three times and told them that when we are at a stop the suv would shift fwd while still applying the brake. We took it back again the 2nd year, still with the same complaint. Each time they had no answer as to what the problem was cause they could never get the problem to repeat. To date the suv still does it and would say at least once every two days so much so we have just become used to the problem.

Own a 2006 toyota 4runner.noticed belts hanging under car one morning. Opened hood and there was oil everywhere, the belts were soaked and had deteriorated.towed to dealership. Told it was a known oil leak defect near crankshaft.had the entire drive train rebuilt as oil had damaged everything. Covered under warranty.car also lunges forward while stopped at stop lights, stop signs, etc.dealership couldn't re-create so not an issue for them.

At about 32,000 miles my truck started to feel as if it had been rear ended when i would stop at a stop light. At first it was very light, but it has since gotten worse. I took it in to the toyota dealer and was told that they lubed the drive shaft. The drive shaft is sealed, so i asked how that could possibly help and he had no answer other than to say just see if it fixes the problem. The problem is still there and getting worse. My concern is that it will actually lurch forward and bump the person in front of me if i am caught off guard and loose my footing on the brake.

I have a driveline vibration on my 2006 toyota 4runner v8 sport model, 4575 miles, vin [xx].the vibration is most noticeable while diving at highway speeds of 72-74 mph.the vibration can be described as a cyclical droning vibration and can be felt on the driver floorboard and dead pedal, the accelerator pedal, as well as slightly on the steering wheel.the vibration is more noticeable when a load is placed on the engine like when climbing a grade.the vibration is also noticeable when accelerating full throttle very hard from a stop.the vehicle also has a clunk that can be felt and heard when coming to a stop.the clunk is also present when starting from a complete stop after removing the brakes.i have had the vehicle inspected by both the dealer and district toyota service manager.both of them indicate that this is "normal" for this type of vehicle and the they won't do anything to fix the problem.i don't feel that either of these issues are normal and feel that the problem is safety related and should be fixed.updated 07/16/2012information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Iowna 2006 toyota 4 runner with a clung in the driveline.it happens when you stop at a stop light, especially the long ones.you think a car has bumped you in the rear but no one is there.it is very disconcerting. It doesn't happen every time.initially the dealer thought that it was due to the antilock brakes activating.theywerenot suppose to activate under 3 mph but the speedometer wasoff about 2 or 2 1/2 mph so the brakes probably thoughthe car was moving when itwas sitingstill.more recently,it didn't happen when i took it to the dealer so their official position wasthat can't duplicate the problem.but the sister vehicle with lexus, the gx470, hadatechnical service bulletin out on it.it has happend from the purchase date on9/1/06.it now has a little over 6,000 miles on it.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner.the contact stated that after stopping and re accelerating the vehicles drive train makes a "clunking" noise.the vehicle has been taken to the toyota dealer four times and the drive train has been lubricated four times.the failure noise gets less noticeable for a while and then returns after the lubrications.the noise is getting progressively worse.a toyota technician stated that they are aware of the failure but they can offer no remedy.the failure mileage was approximately 25,000.rd the current mileage 30,000.rd

2006 4 runner sport edition, v8 with 30,000 miles has clunking sound when stopping or accelerating from stop. Also, wanders from side to side at normal highway speeds.

After stopping the rear end will 'clunk' when either letting off the brakes, or upon accelerating.this will occur roughly 1/10th of the time regardless or variation in braking pressure or acceleration. I've tried every combination ofgentle to hard stops and stops with little change in the frequency of the issue. This only started to occur after 53k miles.the dealer told me the 4runner needed more lube, their fix hasn't stopped the problem.my concern is the drive-shaft is binding, and at some point could fail.

I own a 2006 toyota 4-runner after about 40,000 miles we started experiencing a clunking sound and the vehicle would lurch forward while taking your foot off the brake while at a complete stop.i addressed this with my local toyota dealer and at the time they didn?t know what it was.this problem persisted from a once and awhile issue to doing it every time.i spoke with another person who had a v8 and the same problem, toyota fixed his vehicle by installing a new lexus driveline.once i told the service center about them fixing a vehicle with the same problem they explained they have been having issues with the driveline and the yoke on these vehicles.their fix was to lube the driveline zerk fitting.this worked for a few weeks, but the problem persisted.we are worried that the car will eventually lurch forward and either hit another vehicle or pedestrian.since my vehicle is a v6 they can?t swap the driveline like they did with the v8.i don?t want to be liable for a hitting someone with a vehicle that is not performing correctly.my vehicle drive train is still under warranty, but i can?t get anyone to say they will honor this issue after i pass my warranty period.i believe this is a serious safety defect and should be looked into as soon as possible.

Every time i stop and start driving i get a clunking sound from the vehicle. It almost feels like im being rear ended. This happens pretty much every single time i stop and take off from traffic lights or stop signs.

New 2006 toyota 4runner has 10,000 miles, leaking oil from rear differential, i was told it was defect of the seal from the manufacturer, i was told the seal has to be hasreplaced. Now i am waiting since the part had to be ordered.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4 runner. The contact stated that when she put the seats down on the rear driver side, the seat belt fell apart and the center arm rest next to that seat belt fell as well. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that repairs would have to be performed at her expense. She called the manufacturer who offered no assistance and advised her to speak with the extended warranty company who also offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000. The current mileage is approximately 66,000.

I have a 2006 toyota 4runner. My drivers seat clicks and shifts each time i accelerate or turn, whether its left or right. I have taken it to a toyota dealership to be fixed, however when they returned it to me, it continued to do the same. It is very annoying and frustrating. I did a search on the internet for "seat clicks, toyota 4runner" and pulled up multiple forums of toyota owners who are experiencing the same thing. It seems that this problem is occurring in older models, as well. I understand toyota is beginning to "slow" their manufacturing process down to ensure higher quality than what they have been making over the past couple of years. I have never seen the 4runner mentioned as a vehicle with defaults, but it definitely need to be made public.

The driver seat on my 2006 toyota 4runner sport 4x4 is loose and getting looser by the day.i did some research online and other 4runner owners are similar issues.the issue is so bad that toyota put out a tsb for the issue.the tsb is only for manual seats though and i have power seats.i do not feel safe in a vehicle when the driver seat moves, i think that is rather self explanatory.i would hate to get into and accident and have my seat dislodge from the track resulting in injuries that could have been avoided if the seat was properly secured.i am only asking that toyota extend the tsb to power seats so that i can feel safe in my vehicle.

2006 toyota 4runner sr5 4wd v8. Front seat movement. The front seat in my 4runner moves, pops, rattles like its falling apart.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. While driving 30 mph, the brakes failed to operate properly. The vehicle was towed to ira toyota of tewksbury (468 main st, tewksbury, ma 01876, (978) 863-9009), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact also noticed rust on the frame. The dealer informed the contact to call the manufacturer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 100,000.

Coming to a stop sign at about 30 mph i applied brakes at normal pressure.there was a loud snap and car suddenly veered hard left.took it to service center for evaluation.the front right rotor was broken.the disc had separated from the hat.service center replaced both front rotors and inspected all brakes,on july 24th, the same thing happened with the front left rotor, which is only a few months old.something very dangerous is wrong with the brake system on this vehicle that is actually breaking the rotors.if this were to happen at higher speeds it could cause complete loss of control of the vehicle.

Just recently i have noticed that when i apply the brake pedal it "sticks" takes ( when driving) couple seconds to resume it original position and i can hear a click. I am taking it to my mechanic to ensure is not critical. Just wanted to know if there isa recall on this. Also, since approximately 2014 the original manufacture paint have gradually being deteriorating to the point which the whole body needs a new paint job. Specifically, the paint have completed faded on most parts of the body, the clear coat is completely peeling off.i am the only owner of this vehicle and i have taken good care of it, only 125 k registered.

Corrosion related issues not found on other makes based on personal experience with other boxed ladder frame vehicles extreme corrosion involving disintegration of the rear trailing arm already haphazardly repaired with steel doubler ladder frame is disintegrating from interior of frame penetrating towards the exterior facadecompromises structural integrity and safety of vehicle that is seen beyond on many 4runners beside this particular example brake calipers sticking due to corrosion requiring replacement on multiple occasions binding of brake components cause severe pull under highway speed braking

4runner has been garage kept, and the exterior looks perfect, lost all brake fluid, mechanic put on lift and found left rear brake line rusted through and then pointed out that the frame is severly rusted and would not pass inspection. Trailer hitch, will fall off if i try and use it. Box frame is rusted out on the bottom from front of vehicle to the very back. My wifes 2000 lexus suv has no rust on frame and drives the same commute each day as me.

The frame is so rusted everywhere that it is unsafe to drive. One huge hole is completely broken through both sides of the frame and the bottom plate has cracked through. I have a highly reputable welding shop set to repair and patch this but i feel toyota needs to take care of this before it costs me everything.

The breaks pulse when your stopping and there have been two instances when i experienced the breaks unexpectedly went out or slipped...it's hard to explain exact feeling but it was scary.the traction control light came on when i was at a stop sign at a slight hill and the breaks made a strange noise this happened twice however the light only came on the one time.then while driving the abs, traction, break, and another light all came on at once.this was just random while driving normally.about 20min later they went out.also while setting at the light or being stopped while in great the car pushes forward while the break is depressed.these things fave been random when the breaks felt as if i had lost them i was turning a corner and stepped on the breaks while in the turn they made a slight noise and i let up when i felt as if i was losing them then depressed again.the second time it happened i was in a normal straight road and depressed the breaks and again it felt as if i had lost them...i jerked a little as it scared me being in traffic then i let up and depress them again and if felt normal.again it has been totally random.also my tire pressure light comes on quite frequently and i keep losing a little pressure in all tires.

The pistons in both front calipers have frozen up and had to be replaced twice.the first time at 90,000 miles and again at 160,000.many forums on the 4th gen 4runners document many people others having had the same problem. I asked the dealer and they said that it was not a problem they were aware of.this seems to be a design/factory defect.it is very dangerous.

Brake calipers seize often. I have been through 12 different calipers in 160k miles. The frame has an alarming amount of rust for a vehicle which i have taken very good care of.

Driving in rain on freeway connector road , 25 mph, required to use brakes due to another driver illegally swerving from slow lane of freeway adjacent to connector road, across two solid lines, in front of a car that hit their brakes, and was rear-ended by a second car, which was in front of me. I had plenty of distance to stop, but when i stepped on my brakes, they instantly locked up and my 4runner immediately began to slide...no control at all to slow down, and it felt like i actually increased speed. I know what abs feels like, and my brakes are new, installed in july 2012 at a toyota dealer service dept. This abs system failed! no pulsating feeling, nothing but locked up brakes, which resulted in my hitting the car in front of me. The truck that made the change, and was almost 90 degrees to the lane we were in then took off. He was not hit, but i chased and caught him for chp.my 4runner is crushed because of an idiot, and the failure of my abs to properly function. I have been safely driving 44 years.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while having routine maintenance performed, the technician stated that the pistons were frozen and the front brake calipers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that the front brake caliper was replaced once every year from the date of purchase. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 45,000.

We were stopped at a stop light at the time of the incident. An alarm went off in the car and the red brake light came on. At that point we rolled the car to see if the brakes were working. This is when we realized there were no brakes and the only break we had was our emergency brake. It was taken to a nearby mechanic where it was determined that a caliper over-extended causing the brake fluid to leak out- losing the hydraulic brake system all together.luckily we were not moving at the time of the incident because having lost the entire break system while moving could have been extremely dangerous.

Rusty frame, rusted brake, transmission lines

I broughtmy car in forregular service and new brake pads and rotors.i was told one of the brake calipers on the front wheels was frozen.if the brake caliper is frozen, then the car has significantly reduced stopping power.there was no engine light indicating the problem.multiple people have complained about calipers on the 4 runner.please conduct an investigation and seek a response from toyota.

My 2006 toyota 4runner limited has excessive rust corrosion throughout the undercarriage of the vehicle including but not limited to the frame, suspension, brakes, wheels, exhaust system and bolts/bracing.since purchasing the vehicle, i have had to replace both front axles due to excessive rust at the recommendation of both the dealership and a third party mechanic. While driving, the skid plate detached from underneath the vehicle and was dragging beneath the car after the metal on the plate rusted out around the bolts. Similarly, the heat shield detached while driving on the highway after the bolts rusted out. When i replaced the front brakes (pads & discs), i was forced to purchase brand new calipers because the current calipers were so rusted and seized and the mechanic could not reattach them. I have continued to use toyota dealerships for scheduled maintenance and the consensus has been as follows: sell the 4runner because it is excessively rusted would be a money pit to repair. Currently, the dealership has recommended i replace the steering rack and pinion due to leaks caused by rust. Moreover, the vehicle has duel exhaust leaks in both exhaust manifolds due to excessive rust.on multiple occasions the dealership told me they could not perform the work because of excessive rust. It has cost me thousands to repair and maintain, all of which is a result of extensive rust. The suspension and frame, including the shocks, struts, and bolts are excessively rusted and i have been urged to repair or sell the vehicle by multiple mechanics and dealerships, though the cost to do so would far exceed the cost of the vehicle. All of the aforementioned is detailed in paperwork from the dealership and supplemented by paperwork from third party mechanics here in san diego. The vehicle has 90k miles on it and has followed scheduled maintenance meticulously.

My 2006 toyota 4runner brakes have failed when hitting an uneven surface- ie- pole.when the brake pedal was depressed, the pedal went all the way to the floor and released.the wheel spun freely without control.the brake did not activate.

Anti-lock brakes too sensitive. Under certain conditions, especially if i hit a bump while braking or if the road is wet, the abs kicks in and the vehicle loses braking power (while brake calipers oscillate violently) thereby drastically increasing the stopping distance. I've recently experienced the vehicle stopping from 35 mph in over 200 feet. I wound up in the middle of the intersection. This problem has become progressively worse and more recurring. Local dealership was unconcerned about the danger and cited that this is normal. Certainly, dangerous engineering cannot be accepted as normal in this day and age. Incidentally, this does not occur on other make vehicles with 4-wheel anti-lock brake systems. This symptom has occurred over 100 times, but the dealership always maintained this to be normal and there is nothing wrong.

Abs system failure: 2006 toyota 4-runner limited.in feb. 2009, i was driving on slippery road conditions, the abs system failed, my brakes locked, and the car sped up instead of slowing.i couldn't get the car to stop.instead of hitting the line of cars in front of me i veered off the road through a snow bank.the car eventually stopped after traveling another ~100ft through 8" of snow.there were no injuries and no damage to the vehicle (car was drivable afterwards).the police did respond and a tow truck was needed to tow my car back onto the road.my original travel speed was ~ 40mph (before braking).i sped up after braking, but i am not certain of the speed when i hit the bank.toyota ran a diagnostic and received several errors.the abs was not working properly.they said the problem may have related to a low battery i had 6-12 months earlier.the low battery somehow deactivated components of the abs.i had no idea this was even possible.if i would have known that a low or dead battery could result in abs failure i would have had the system checked immediately after the low battery incident.toyota fixed the abs; however, i still continue to have occasional problems.for example, when the car is at rest, but not in park, it will sometimes lunge forward (nothing like you hear about on tv, but there is definitely some type of power surge), there is also an occasional buzzing noise from the master cylinder area when the brakes are depressed (even in park).finally, i have driven several suvs and small trucks.i have never had a vehicle that will loose traction as easily as this vehicle looses traction.something is definitely wrong.i plan to contact toyota to have them look at the abs once again.i didn't realize that i was supposed to report these issues to the nhtsa or i would have reported the problem a year ago.thanks for your time.

The 4runner pulls to one side and does not stop as quickly as it should.the pistons in both front calipers have frozen up to some extent.i have checked many forums on the 4th gen 4runners and many people have had the same problem.i went to the dealer why my car was under warranty and they said that it wan not a problem and it would not be covered.i purchased remanufactured calipers and had them installed and they are freezing up again.this seems to be a factory defect that is very dangerous.

Brake pedal goes to floor.at stoplight pedal goes to floor and will not hold vehicle.told it was a master cylinder.this is a $1500+ job.dealer told me this never fails but out of warranty so their defect is my loss.

Left front brake caliper extremely rusted and noticed squeaking from same. Also extremely dirty rims from brake dust, replaced with non ceramic pads, but no other rims showed same amount of grit. Took in for service and informed that all other pads had 20% life and left front caliper outside lower piston was seized as well as unserviceable bleeder valve leaving no other option than to replace with caliper. Now, not one week after replacing caliper, new one is already rusting while all others look fine.

I had a 2006 toyota 4 runner, limited.the brake system never was right and that is why we got rid of the car.at a light, car would continue to inch forward.i complained to the dealer several times and when it lurched forward when stopped in a school zone this past spring, we immediately got rid of it, since the dealer kept telling me nothing was wrong.

Starting at this date: its happened 4 times since while driving when needing to apply my brakes suddenly. I apply the brakes, medium hard tension, opposed to jamming on the brakes, then momentarily let off brakes and then taped brakes to more gently ease off the situation. The car then bucks violently as if hitting something. Extremely shocking. One time i had a passenger and as she was shocked too, asked me what i was doing? i replied, "nothing, the car did it! i read online that others have experienced the same issue i describe.

I am canadian resident a bought a 2006 toyota 4runner sr5, which is a us vehicle import. When i went to brake 2 days ago the brake pedal sunk to the floor and the vehicle kept on going. I was about 3 inches away from driving into my house. Luckily was able to stop as i was going very slow. Have not driven the car since.

First issue: the brake pedal has a buzzing that occurs with every stop, it' is severe enough that it alters the brake pedal pressure. Second issue: when hitting a bump while stopping the brake pedal loses pressure. Would seem to be a concern for toyota, they first said they haven't heard of a complaint, and then said it was normal.

Yes! i've been having a steering problem.

Extreme wheel shimmy at highway speeds.3 dealerships can't find a problem thought they all feel the vibration and shake.tires are wearing prematurely.front end components are wearing prematurely.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle had a vibration in the steering column.the service dealer expressed this was a normal characteristic vibration.the vehicle was new and was never in an accident.the contact test drove another vehicle which had the same issue.the vibration was noticeable from 5 mph to any higher speed.

Dt*:the contact stated at various speeds, the vehicle veers in either direction.the dealership was unable to determine the problem and the manufacturer sent a factory representative whom could not determine a problem either. Updated 06/15/06.

2006 toyota 4runner sport, 4.0l 4wd.vibration felt via steering wheel, which occurs during acceleration/deceleration and across wide speed range.higher frequency, low amplitude quality.felt when vehicle is traveling in straight line, but has changed speed and is felt when steering wheel is turned slightly off center as in small course corrections.when accelerating or decelerating, there seems to be resonant feedback felt through the steering wheel as if there is directing contacting the steering rod.dealer attempted to correct with an alignment of the frontend and rotation and balance of the tires/wheels.the result is that the original sensation is still present and the corrective attempt was not effective.

Steering has knocking sound while turning left or right, it started at about 62000 miles. Also replaced coil pack #2 and # 4 at 49000 miles had another go out a year later, delership told me to replace the remaining 4 coil packs, by only replacing the corruped one will cause the ohers to fail.

06 4runner same frame as recalled tacoma. Safety issue heavy rust on frame . Mechanic said to get rid of it, rotting where it connects to control arms.may not pass next inspection

I bought my vehicle used with 86,000 miles on it. Not even a year later my power steering return line rusted through and would not hold any power steering fluid at all. I replaced the power steering return lines with after market rubber line. I figured this out while i was driving and my power steering gave out. Luckily it happened in a situation where it wasn't an immediate danger. Next on the list was the muffler from the catalytic converter back. I noticed that it was excessively loud while driving . I went under the vehicle only to realize the the part of the muffler that connects to the catalytic converter was completely rusted through just hanging there! i just brought my vehicle in to get the underside completely coated with fluid film and my mechanic kept making reference to the 'rusty toyota 4runner ', didn't give me a warm feeling about the rest of the lifespan of the frame. It has 100,000 or so miles on it and i'd lime to have it for many more!

Toyota 4runner frame rust. I just got back from the state inspection and they said the 4runner would not pass state inspection in one year. The frame is rusted through in some areas.the frame needs to be fixed or replaced. I am having toyota inspect the frame on 5/15/2019 at autonation toyota in leesburg va under the vehicles vin of [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

2006 4 runner sport edition, v8 with 30,000 miles has clunking sound when stopping or accelerating from stop. Also, wanders from side to side at normal highway speeds.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. While test driving the vehicle the steering wheel felt very loose and the vehicle drove at low speeds ranging from 20-30 mph. The contact test drove another toyota 4runner and did not have the same experience. The service department at the dealership stated that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. The contact has had nearly two collisions because of the lack of steering. The contact was currently in arbitration to have toyota buy back the vehicle. The failure mileage was 140. The current mileage was 3,000.

The frame is completely rusted with rusted out holes. Caused the driver side lower control arm to break off, almost causing my teenage son to crashfortunately he was on a side street and driving slow

Road contained a turn at which time the vehicle skidded "fishtailed" and upon correction skidded the other direction.vehicle went into small culvert ditch and rolled over.vehicle was traveling at 35 mph.

I have a steering problem on my 2006 toyota 4runner v8 sport model, 9191 miles. While driving at highway speeds, the vehicle wants to veer from side to side and is difficult to keep in the proper lane.the dealership and toyota district rep have inspected the vehicle and suggest that this is "normal" behavior for the vehicle and no repair is necessary.i feel that this is a dangerous problem and should be corrected.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. While driving 35 mph over a bump in the road, the steering failed and turned in the opposite direction without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (classic toyota located at 8510 tyler blvd mentor, oh, 44060) where it was diagnosed that the frame failed due to corrosion and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and suggested that the frame be repaired. Case number: 1706140790 was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. While driving atapproximate speeds of 25 mph, the steering was abnormally veering to the right instead of being centered. When attempting a turn, the contact would have to over steer to maintain control of the vehicle. The vehicle had been to the dealer 4 times in an attempt to correct the failure and an alignment was performed each time. After repairs, the vehicle steering was still off but was not causing the vehicle to lean to the left. The vehicle has not been further repaired.the failure mileage was 6,998 and the current mileage was 18,105.

Dt*: the contact stated a vibration was felt coming up through the steering column while driving 20mph.the vibration was more pronounced at higher speeds and less pronounced at lower speeds, although it never ceased.the service dealer determined the vibration was a common occurrence to the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while in for maintenance it was discovered that the subframe had experienced extensive rusting and corrosion. The cause of the failure was not determined, and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 121,000.

Letter from senator manchin iii on behalf of constituent, requesting assistance with her efforts to report damage affecting the driving safety of her toyota 4-runner (attn: angie walsh). *ldthe consumer stated the frame of the vehicle was rusted.

I,along with 48 other people, have posted to this forum that the frame on their 4runner had rusted and/or cracked. Add mine to the list.my mechanic used the word "terminal" in response to the condition of my frame. It's not fully on its death bed, but it likely won't be driveable after 6 months.

The frame broke on my 4 runner when i was backing up and front tire fell inward. The truck had just under 100,000 miles. I spent approximately $7,000 for a body shop to replace the broken frame with a used frame. Toyota must not have used a suffiently hard enough metal or did not treat the metal with the proper finish for frame to break at such an early mileage. I have the receipt and detail for the work done by the body shop.

On my 2006 4runner, i have been noticing an excessive amount of rust build-up on the frame and many of the undercarriage parts. This 4runner has spent it's whole life in colorado, we don't see rust problems here. I have never seen a vehicle have this kind of rust. I'm very concerned about the safety and integrity of it!

I recently purchased my dream car a 2006 toyota 4 runner.i purchased the vehicle in colorado but it was originally from new york.the vehicle has very low miles and rust damage, but the dealership at no surprise was not looking out for my best interest and did not inform me how bad the rust damage is and it may cost more than i can afford to fix it at all.currently i am not able to attach the spare tire because of the rust.i don't know how severe the rust damage is. Pueblo colorado repair shops are not experts in this area because they do not see this type of damage very often.,i don't know if you help people that have the same problems that i do but if you can help in any way since you are also passionate about your dream cars i thought it would not hurt to ask if you can help in any way to fix or advise me on what i should do. A response either way would be appreciated

My 2006 4runner's frame rusted so badly that the rear passenger side control arm detatched completely.

I was driving home on a suburban road going about 25 mph and took a corner which felt like i had hit snow or ice, however conditions were optimal. The fishtailing continued and i parked my car as it did not feel safe to drive. When the mechanic looked at it he said i could have been in a serious accident and possibly a roll had i taken it on the highway. The frame was cracked. We also had already replaced the suspension on this vehicle, and the exhaust fell off on the highway the year prior due to rust. The underbody of the car is excessively rusted.

I have owned my 2006 toyota 4runner v8 for about a year now. Always wanted one through the years of my driving. I bought it at 85k miles and now it sits at 96k miles. When i first bought the car, i didn't check the frame for any issues.i checked cosmetic and performance issue. Everything went smooth. About a month after my ownership, i started to realized the frame of how rusted it was. I did more investigation on it and it is all over the whole frame. Literally, rotting. Disappointed at the previous owners who didn't take care of the under body and at the quality of the frame. After seeing all the complaints and issues of consumers, i might have to jump ships. As much as i love this runner and want to run it till it dies, i might have to find another alternative. After seeing the issue of the frame rotting causing steering issue from the suspension, i don't think i want to run into that since i travel a lot on the weekends. Any other small recall i am okay with, but dealing with frame issues is a big no in my book. If toyota could make this into a recall, i would reconsider on keep the rig. But, as of now, it's not convincing. It's just sad to see a 4runner at 96k miles, the frames already rotting away.

The passenger side front control arm broke off from the frame.rust through on the frame where the control arm hooks to the frame.broke while simply backing out of driveway and turning the wheel.rust is all through the frame.

Vehicle will not pass inspection due to a corroded frame! odometer reading is 41,822miles, this happened after replacing 2 rusted brake lines. Vehicle is undriveable.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner.the contact stated that vehicle was taken for inspection where the mechanic informed the contact that there was a significant amount of corrosion and rust on the majority of the frame.there were also two areas where the frame had been previously welded and exhibited holes. The mechanic advised the contact that the defect was as significant safety concern. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The current and failure mileage was 58,000.

Excessive rust on frame, spare tire assembly rusted out, dealer tried to replace tire carrier assembly & winch but was unable to put spare in new assembly holder because of the rust and safety hazard saying it will fall off.i was advise of this today, april 8, at 3:00 pm.the dealership was going to report this to the local toyota rep and put the spare tire inside the trunk of my suv.this is a known problem with these 4runner trucks and dealer stated in the past i had superficial rust.i also see there is a pending class action suit and toyota settle a similar suit with tacoma and tundra truck owners for the same rust issues.this vehicle has been well maintained and i put thousands of dollars in repair to keep it running well and trying to keep it safe.i understand there is a pending class action suit filed with the nhtsa august 17, 2018, plaintiff weinreich.

Excessive rust on the frame and underbody components of my vehicle. My fear is that this rust will eventually lead to failure of key frame structural components.

Corrosion and rotting of the frame. Significant areas rotting in right front frame towards front bumper mounting areas and right rear frame on front side of right rear tire. Right front considered a safety issue in a front end collision.front end vibrations

Despite having previously treated my undercarriage with rust-proof sprays numerous times, my mechanic has told me that my toyota is not safe to drive and it did not receive an inspection sticker due to excessive rust. In addition to the complete rusting the my xreas shock/suspension system (a $3,000 fix), rust damage has spread throughout the undercarriage, rendering many thin spots beneath crumbling flakes. While driving i have noticed a rumbling feeling beneath the front end and the driving wheel shakes furiously at times. My mechanic has said the suspension system has been compromised and will need to be replaced, and rust is compromising other structural components.

Major frame rust. The body is still great but when you look underneath it's a different story. I can flake off pieces of the frame with my finger. My mechanic says it may only have a couple of years left. I will have to take it to a dealership to get their opinion on the matter.

In september 2012 i noticed paint blistering on the tailgate of my 4runner. I now (8/13) have rust throughoriginating from the inside middle of the tail gate. I took the truck to my local body shop and was told that this was a common problem with the 06 4runner. It was caused by a sound deafening material on the inside of the gate. "the material gets wet and holds the moisture causing body rot". This shop has repaired other 4runners with this problem.i also own a 1994 isuzu trooper with no body rust that sits next to it in my driveway.i was told by the toyota rep (oakdale toyota in ny) that it was out of warranty and they could not help me.i also have extensive rust on the undercarriage. The truck has never been off road before.

The entire underbody of my 4runner has a severe amount of rust and corrosion. I have attempted treating the rust with rust converter and wire brushing to no avail. I am concerned about the rusted out components and the effect it will have on the vehicle.

My frame on a 2006 toyota 4runner sport has excessive rust and rot.this appears to be due to inferior workmanship and/or parts. Driving the vehicle in this condition may pose a serious safety hazard.

Serious frame rusting and/or rot noted on my 2006 4runner sport edition. In my opinion this is very unsafe as frame can become unstable while driving and cause an accident.

Vehicle is showing signs of corrosion in the frame. This is especially apparent on the weld points. Rue will eventually consume the vehicle frame this making it undrivable.

The frame is abnormally rusted to the point on perferation in several locations making it unsafe to drive.

The vehicle was purchased on 01/26/2017 and was driven in upstate new york until 1/1/2018 when i relocated to my current address in south carolina for my new career. The frame of my toyota 4runner is severely rusting causing the structural integrity of the vehicle to be compromised and causing dangerous damage to steering, brake, suspension, fuel components throughout the vehicle on their mounting points and throughout their systems. The vehicle was in start and stop traffic returning to home when leaving a stop light a loud thud sound came from the rear passenger corner of the vehicle, once the vehicle was mobile under speeds of 30 mph there was no immediate cause of the "fishtailing" however speeds over 30mph the vehicle would slowly "fishtail" and would aggressively get worse until the vehicle came to a stop. Once the vehicle was home and parked i discovered the mounting portion of the vehicle rear trailing arm had rusted and became unattached rendering the vehicle undriveable. Attached are photos of the rust damage to the rear passenger trailing arm and frame.

The roof rubber strip on the driver side came flying off when my suv truck was under the air dryer in the car wash on 03/31/2019. I heard a horrible thumping sound on the roof of my car and noticed there was a rubber strip on the ground and found that the roof rubber strip on the driver side was missing. I don't know if the strips are supposed to be glued with some kind of adhesive or not, as i've never experienced this before with any car i've owned. I think it is ludicrous that a well-meaning car owner can't take his or her car to the car wash without parts flying off the car. I'm just grateful that this rubber strip was not flying off on the freeway as it may fly off even more while you are on the highways.

Took the vehicle into the toyota dealership, they said the frame was rusting heavily in one spot only, in front of the rear trailing arm mount on the left side. The trailing arm mount is ready to break off from the frame.. The vehicle has been cleaned weekly it's entire life, and is stored in a garage every night. The frame on this truck is almost exactly the same as the frame on the toyota tacoma which was recalled for this exact same problem.

St last year, toyota settled a class-action lawsuit involving approximately 1.5million tacoma, tundra and sequoia trucks also built on a frame1' toyota agreed to inspectand replace the frames at an estimated cost of $3.4 billion. This confirms frame corrosion is aproblem well-known to toyota and the public.

Rarely driven, about 65,000 miles and the frame is rusting out. It started early.

Excessive frame rust.safety issue due to frame rusting out

The rear frame of 2006 4runner is rusting at excessively speed and corrosion is coming from inner to outward. When the vehicle tailer hook is attach to a trailer towing at 5000 pound(rated for such towing capacity )the frame component may break off because of excessive frame corrosion.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 2 mph, an abnormal clunking sound was heard. The contact stopped to inspect the vehicle and became aware that a section of the passenger's side was subframe fractured. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic but was not repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 131,000.*dt

During replacement of front brakes when vehicle was on a lift the mechanic pointed-out severe frame rust and said the truck would not pass inspection in pennsylvania.there were large holes in several areas of the frame.this is a 2006 model with only 85,000 miles of usage.

On my way to my nieces birthday i drove over to a local park. On my way there i drove over a pot hole as i was cut off by another driver and couldn't avoid it i hear a loud noise from the rear and the vehicle began to sway left and right as i drove. I didn't feel to safe driving it and i was a short distance away from my home i drove back with the hazard lights on. I then proceeded to inspect the rear of the vehicle and found that my upper right control arm bracket had ripped off the frame !!!! i was very alarmed and surprised to see as how my vehicle only has 76000 miles on it. The amount of rust on the frame of the vechicle. I have own vehicles far more older with more miles that have never rusted to this extent.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated while having a routine inspection on the vehicle, he was informed by the independent mechanic that the chassis was extremely rusted. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

The 4runner frame has experienced excessive and premature rust and corrosion. I was told by the toyota dealership that they consider this vehicle unsafe to drive due to holes and rust in the frame, and they refused to do any maintenance, inspection, or further upkeep of the vehicle. I have kept my vehicle in excellent condition with regular maintenance through the years, completed by a toyota dealership. The 4runner should have been included in the other toyota rusted frame recalls, since it is built on a tacoma frame. The problem was first noted several years ago and has gotten exceedingly worse.

The vehicle frame as well as other steel components including in the suspension system are experiencing severe, progressive deterioration due to rusting.the frame rust is the most problematic and dangerous because it is occurring on the inside of the frame and, therefore, can neither be seen nor remediated.the only indication i had of the severity of the frame deterioration is from isolated locations where the frame had rusted entirely through on the passenger side frame rail in the vicinity of the front door.upon further investigation, i determined that the inside of the longitudinal frame rails on both the driver and passenger sides is significantly deteriorated on the inside.the corrosion appears to start on the bottom of the rail and then progress upward on the side walls of the rail over time.the bottom of the two frame rails are littered with rust chips ranging in size for fingernail-sized flakes to chips as large as 10 sq. Cm. With the thickness of these ranging up to several (3) mm.it should also be noted that tire jack for the vehicle punctured the bottom of the passenger side frame rail when it was used, thus giving the most graphic demonstration that the frame had deteriorated significantly from the inside.with respect to the other steel components of the underside of the vehicle, there is widespread rust and deterioration, particular for components of the suspension, but also on the tubing for steering and the transmission cooling.also, fasteners (nuts, bolts, and brackets) which attach the many components to the frame of the vehicle are rusting to the point that the integrity of these fasteners has been significantly diminished.the veh

Purchased my 4runner certified used by modern toyota of boone in feb 2012.took the vehicle to toyota the next year locally and they mentioned that i have severe frame rust but by this time the warranty has already expired.filed a complaint with toyota regarding frame rust and the fact that i was sold the vehicle and it should not have been certified by toyota because of the frame rust.had an accident in jun 2018, high front end hit, shouldn't have had any issues with the frame and it wasn't checked for integrity, but after some vibrations and wobbling and decreased stability on the highway, took to my local dealer and the tech did a visual inspection and said the frame was bent.awaiting an appt from bodyshop to verify findings even though insurance already closed the claim from accident but independent mechanic states that the frame may really be bent due to the rusting and the ability to flex because of the corrosion, weakened.vehicle feels unsafe to drive and is leaning on the drivers side front and back even with new factory toyota suspension (struts and shocks).there is no reason for this vehicle to be leaning or the frame to be rusting as it is.

Excessive frame rust caused bracket to snap on bumpy roads making vehicle unsafe to drive. Issue has been the biggest problem with 4runners and this is another example of it.

The frame of this 4runner is rusted due to weather condition of salt and snow up north. This should be a recall for these 4runners

There is a hole in the passenger side frame rail we're a/c drain tube is present. Afraid to continue driving vehicle and have a catastrophic failure. Rust is apparent on majority of frame which seems to be failing from the inside out. This was found while lifting vehicle to repair brakes.

Rusty frame, rusted brake, transmission lines

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the frame of the vehicle was rusted and corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the frame needed to be replaced and the vehicle was unsafe to be driven. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 62,584.

Vehicle's skid plate rusted completely off. Original owners, all family members, have kept the vehicle cleaned well underneath since first day of ownership. When we lifted the 4runner up on a lift, we saw multiple rust holes in the frame as well as extreme oxidation in the center at certain places. I need to have lots of frame repair done to feel safe driving it.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the vehicle's structure was flaking and metal had detached from the frame onto the driveway. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for routine maintenance who determined that the undercarriage was rusted. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 85,000.

I currently own a 2006 toyota four runner that is not currently involved in a toyota recall for excessive rust.my vehicle is at a toyota dealer, a claim with toyota has been filed, and pictures of damage are being taken per my claim.i just received a call from toyota corporate claims department telling me that my toyota is not under recall even though i have excessive rot (not rust) that has eaten through my vehicles rear crossmember.currently my vehicle is un drivable due to this issue, my rear axle is only held onto the vehicle by two out of the four anchor points this posing a huge safety concern if the rear axle becomes separated from the rest of the frame.the front two mounts (that are welded to the rear crossmember) are torn completely from the rear crossmember, toyota says the body of the truck will need to be removed from the chassis in order to slide the new crossmember in but they refuse to cover this repair.as i'm sure you're aware but the 2004-2010 toyota tacoma are currently under recalls for this type of issue and the four runner shares this type of frame, and many other parts because it is assembled on a tacoma frame, but built in japan not in the us.toyota says that the recall only covers us made vehicles and japanese built units like the four runner, are not covered.please advise as i currently own a very expensive lawn ornament at this time and would like to see these units integrated into the tacoma recall process.thanks for your help.

2006 toyota 4runner purchased new in november 2006. The frame has suffered from such bad frame corrosion that numerous mechanic have refused to put the vehicle on a lift for fear of complete frame collapse. This vehicle has been well maintained otherwise but is now a definite safety hazard due to the advanced frame corrosion. Service professionals have commented that they have never seen such frame disintegration in a vehicle of this age. I really feel this is a defective frame with rest of the vehicle in satisfactory and operable condition.

Heavy rust on frame. Found a hole on main body frame this weekend while at work on my car lift.

'06 4runner that the frame is completely shot.it started by having to replace the ball joints and tie rod ends prematurely and now the whole vehicle sits 3 inches lower on the driver's side.the rest of the vehicle is in excellent condition.

I was driving to work when my back left tire frame broke apart. This is when i noticed severe rust on my frame. This is a major problem and i could have been a deadly crash. I called toyota corporate and filed case #2006012210 and they told me that my car was not qualified for the frame to be replaced at their expense. They know all about the 2005-2011 4runners that suffer from corrosion so severe the weakened frames make it dangerous to ride in the suvs.i am luck to be alive. This is a serious issue and toyota should take full responsibility for their negligence. Do they need someone to die to take action.

The front drivers side of the main frame under the vehicle broke due to excessive rust on the frame. As far as i know toyota has a large recall now on rav 4s and lexus vehicles due to excessive frame rust but there is no current recall on 4 runners. I would like to add my concern in hopes of leading to a recall on 4 runners built during similar time period. According to toyota they say this is an ongoing problem they are trying to address. But they have failed to recall the products that are dangerous. When the frame breaks, this is a deadly situation while driving. Toyota offered me no form of reimbursement when i reported the problem to their corporate office(toyota case #[xxx]) filed with toyota over phone on 9-25-14.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Frame is rusted through.

Vehicles frame rust from inside out. Frame rails rusting after 5 years. Huge safty issue frames cracking in half. Toyota knows the issue and refuses to do anything for the 4runners.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact was notified by a mechanic that the vehicle was severely rusted. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000. Consumer stated transmission line failure. Updated 11/26/18

2006 4runner with 165k miles will not pass inspection due to excessive frame rust. I purchased this brand new from the dealer and have taken excellent care of it. There is no rust on the body. The rust is excessive for other similar vehicles from other manufactures. Toyota has replaced similar frames on their tacoma models but have done nothing for 2006 4runner owners.

The frame and suspension components are extremely rusty to the point of being unsafe. The car is extremely clean and well taken care of, yet the frame continues to rust like crazy. I've experienced broken bolts, lose suspension components, etc. The car handles extremely poor now, and i've been told it isn't worth it to replace any suspension components since the mounting points are so rusty.

The bracket holding the motor mount broke into the frame causing the motor to hit the differential and break the upper engine oil pan. Attached are two pictures, one showing a normal connection at the frame and the other shown broken into the frame. This may have been caused by rust/corrosion and/or a weak connection which was reinforced at this point for 2007 and later models.date of incident is approximate

The frame, heat shields, skid plate and rear axel are severely rusted. We've owned the vehicle since 2008 and it has been garaged and kept clean. The rust is reaching a point where we're concerned about the safety of the vehicle. We've noticed it coming on for about a year - now it's growing exponentially. Apparently the toyota tacomas have been recalled, but not the 4runners. Why!?

I am the original owner of a 2006 toyota 4runner. The car is kept in a garage and is driven infrequently. Currently there's about 76k miles on it. I recently took it in for a maine state safety inspection and it would not pass due to excessive rust on the frame. There's at least one hole big enough to put your finger through, and there's rust flaking off the rest of the frame. I've owned other cars for longer than this with many more miles put on them, the rust on this frame is beyond what anyone would expect, and it's a severe safety hazard. I don't feel comfortable driving the car anymore, and i'm not sure if it can be patched or not. Toyota has a known problem with the frames on other vehicles and this one is no different.

Frame is very rusted and will not pass ny state inspection, sent pictures to toyota and received no hope of help. Bascially told me to call junk yard. Vehicle only has 96,000 miles on it and has always been maintained by toyota.

Vehicle body is completely rusted out.would not pass pa inspection without frame welding. Other suspension bars and frame issues also as a result of rust.over $4000 to fix the issue.

Ihave a 2006 toyota 4runner with major rust issues, inside the structure of the frame is flaking apart also hole's in the frame where you can put your hand and feel the layers of the frame coming apart. The other open recalls with the tacoma, tundra and sequoia with the frame rust issue should have included the 4runner they use the same material for the frame as the other vehicles. They're are thousands of 4runners that are affected by this issue and the owners are just waiting for something to happen, i beg you to consider this for me and my family's safety. Thank you for your time.

Rusting of the frame underneath the truck.

I own a 200y toyota 4runner, 4x4 4.0 v6 truck, and during the spring time i began to notice copious amounts of rust scale falling from my truck over night. I just thought this was surface rust/paint falling off, continued to drive for a week and began to hear creaking noises coming from the rear of the vehicle. I too a look underneath and saw that the right rear lower control arm mount is almost rusted through and the frame on the passenger side from the lower control arm mount back to behind the center of the axle is rusted through completely. I checked for recalls and found none for my model but did for similar year tundra, sequoia, and the tacoma which is a shared design with my 4runner. My truck has been waiting for a frame repair at a aftermarket body shop for over 4 months. I have contacted toyota customer care and received no help. I recently searched hoping to find new information and found that the nhtsa has opened an investigation on the frame rust issue. I am writing this to let you know this is a real issue and needs a frame replacement recall. A 2006 model year truck should not need a frame repair from rust after 12 years of existence and i believe toyota is negligent in recalling all other truck based vehicles for frame rust while trying to cheap out and exclude the 4runner. Due to vehicle being in shop i do not have pictures, but i can get them if needed and also toyota customer care should have the record of me contacting them and sending in pictures earlier this year. Thank you! 1804271716 is the toyota care case number.

Was informed yesterday by our mechanic who was performing an oil change that this vehicle would not pass next inspection due to frame rust and corrosion.i have not taken pictures but can if needed.

During recent maintenance of my 2006 toyota 4runner with 115k miles, a mechanic notified me that the frame crossmember in front which attaches to the control arms was completely rusted through and was a significant safety concern. The vehicle was brought to the toyota dealer to assess condition of the frame. The dealer stated the frame was irreparable and was not covered by a recent toyota frame recall for tacomas, tundras, and sequoias.the premature corrosion of the frame poses significant danger to drivers and could result in dangerous failures.

Frame rust damage, normal street driving.lower control arm mounts disintegrated causing vehicle to be not drivable.along with complete frame rust that possibly couldve lead to even more dangerous conditions.

Excessive rust damage to frame, got fixed for last year inspection and more problems occured this year. Vehicle other wise in good shape, disappointing to get rid of it. Could case hazard due to weld of cross member developing hole.

My 2006 toyota 4runner, has corrosion to the frame that is not normal for a car this age. This car is stored in a garage away from the elements. This rust to the frame make the vehicle susceptible to losing control due to a rupture of the frame. Toyota has admitted in the pass to sub standard frames in there other line of vehicles of the same year.

When taking my vehicle to my mechanic for a loud noise coming from the front of the vehicle when driving over bumps and turning and feeling vibrations in the steering wheel when driving. My mechanic states that there is extensive and pervasive rust and corrosion on main structural components of the underside of the vehicle, specifically on the frame and frame mounting points, that is dangerous as it is affecting other working parts of the vehicle and could cause a catastrophic failure. Upon further inspection i was shown the extensive amount of rust and corrosion on the ladder frame and frame assembly. The frame in its entirety is extensively corroded and areas where bolts mount parts to the frame of the vehicle have corroded and caused parts to fail and literally hang off creating a dangerous situation that requires the frame itself to be replaced as well as these other parts to be removed or replaced. This is abnormal for any vehicle and is especially dangerous as the frame is the main structural component of the vehicle. Continuing to operate the vehicle with the frame in the condition it is in is hazardous. Toyota recalled other vehicles with this frame type i.e., sequoia, tacoma and tundra models from the same years of production as this 4runner for this exact problem of extensive rust and corrosion that could cause a catastrophic failure. These vehicles use the same frame and same assembly processes for preventing rust and corrosion and after your investigation the frame and frame components of these vehicles were found by your organization to be worthy of a complete recall.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact took the vehicle to atlantic toyota (671 lynnway, lynn, ma 01905, 781-599-4922) for rear brake repairs. The dealer informed the contact that the frame was rusted and had a hole. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 159,532.

Our frame is rusted so badly that it would have failed the safety inspection if we did not fix the huge holes in it at the rear bumper.we are were told by our safety inspector that our entire frame is very rusty and we must do something to fix it right now.it will not pass the safety inspection for next year.this needs to be recalled by toyota as part of their frame recall!

I have a2006 4runner with no rust on the body but the frame is full of rust. All body mounts have rusted away from the frame causing a wable when hitting bumps. I am so worried that the car is going to break in half at any time.it causes unusual sounds, creaking, squeaking, unusual noises, bad alignment, uneven wear in the tires, suspension, and shocks. ... Frame is visibly bent and severely damaged ...the worst thing is that i called toyota for service and they won't fix my frame... My mechanic said that is too far gone to fix .. I'm not able to drive it because it broke off on me..

Severe frame rust. This issue has now a safety related issue. Toyota has a recall on other models same year. But yet nothing on the 4 runner. Because it is a safety issue and toyota is ignoring it. This time for a class action suit..

Structural - frame rust. Toyota has not recalled the 4runner due to frame rust experienced on the tacoma. Attached are pictures of underbody. This vehicle would not pass inspection and i am located in california where laws are strict.

The frame is rusted through in a couple of places on my 4runner.my local dealer did an inspection and there are holes rusted through the frame.i'm afraid in an accident that the frame will not hold up and cause injury to my occupants and myself.please inform toyota of these rusted frames.thank you!

Massive amounts of rust all throughout the frame have led to weakened or non- existent metal in many locations throughout the near entirety of the frame of the 4runner.had a mechanic state that the vehicle should be 'gotten rid of' or that i should be 'ok with the vehicle breaking catastrophically sometime in the near future' because of the weakened and degraded state of the frame.

My sub frame is rotting and rusting away

Abnormal rusting of the frame and undercarriage.

Frame is rotting away, and it is starting to cause concerns regarding the safety of the frame and supporting structure.took it to a toyota dealer, who documented the frame is starting to get weak/soft and jeopardizing the integrity and safety of the vehicle.

My wife's 4runner started to have problems with extensive body roll during acceleration, braking, and bumps. It made it extremely difficult to keep the vehicle in it's own lane especially at highway speeds. Thinking the problem was the front and rear shocks i started the process of replacing them. When i went to install the rear shocks i noticed the the actual cause of the problem was the fact that the frame had rusted through to the point that the lower control arm was no longer attached. I thought that maybe that just happens overtime but then i realize that the rust on the frames on my other cars was not as substantial especially considering one of them was manufactured in 1992.

The frame on my 2006 toyota 4runner has excessive rust and rot. This appears to be due to inferior workmanship and/or parts. Driving the vehicle in this condition may pose a serious safety hazard.

Went to the toyota shop after getting a new transmission was replaced, they noted "cust not front frame core support is rusted off found a hole in the left frame rail". They also had to use new bolts for transmission due to corrosion on undercarriage. Would not pass inspection until fixed. The frame is washed off continuously after being exposed to salt in winters.

Car has 99,400 miles, would not pass pa state insp due to rust holes on frame

The dealer would not inspect my vehicle because of frame rust. The whole frame has rust over it. The part that failed inspection was the end caps.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that after a safety inspection, he was informed that the vehicle had failed the inspection due to an excessive amount of corrosion under the vehicle. A certified mechanic referred the contact to the manufacturer for further assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

The vehicles frame is suffering from sever rusting with holes and sections completely rusted out.

Frame rust- structural issue

We have just been informed that the frame of our 2006 toyota 4runner is completely rusted out.this happened while i was driving down the road.this caused the control joint to come loose, and giving me very little control over the vehicle.the rust is an issues...and a huge safety hazard.i was able to get the car to the side of the road, and call a tow truck, but had this happened driving down the express way i cannot imagine the end result.toyota is aware of the rust issues.they have great vehicles that will run forever if you take care of them, but this issue is not a care issue -is a manufacture issue.

The frame of my 2006 4runner has excessive corrosion and rust.there are areas where the metal has become very thin, and more and more metal keeps flaking off all the time.i have already noticed a couple of holes through the frame rails.i'm especially worried about the areas where suspension components bolt up to the frame, those areas show severe rust and corrosion.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that the rear driver's side frame was rusted. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the subframe needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The failure mileage was 127,456. Photos attached.

I bought my 4runner new and have taken meticulous care of it via the dealership i bought it from, doing an oil change every 5000 miles. Now they tell me the truck should not be driven since the frame has rusted through in the rear.the trucks maintenance was done at prestige toyota mahesh nj 201-669-4525 service manager is robert j teunisen

I put my 2006 toyota 4 runner limited in the shop to have the power steering pump replaced.the shop called me back and stated they refuse to work on the suv because of the extensive rust damage to the frame. They were concerned about legal issues should they knowingly repair a vehicle that in their opinion was unsafe to drive. In addition, the fuel tank straps rusted away from the frame to a point where the fuel tank was only connected to the vehicle by the skid plate under it.

Frame of 4runner is almost completely rusted off, i was told that there is a recall on frame. It is a sfty issue.

The area holding the spare tire under the rear bumper is rusted so bad that a tire shop requested i have a mechanic remove the spare tire due to fear of cracking part of the rusted underbelly. My spare tire is inaccessible at the moment.

This is an addendum to complaint number 11175888.the purpose for the addendum is to add better photographs.

The entire frame is rotted and full of holes . Suspension is in danger of detaching spontaneously. The odometer has been rolled back over one hundred thousand.

Noticed rust on garage floor, had dealer inspect the frame was told that , only found surface rust no holes. At what point does this turn intoa safety problem, my husband and i are very concerned ! the vehicle was purchased new and was always parkedin a insulated attached garage. This vehicle has only45,000 miles, the body isin good shape.toyota had previous frame rust issues,we would hope toyotawould replace the frame or buy this vehicle from us ,if we traded it in who would want to buy it with this rusty frame and ,what would we get for it?

Just recently i have noticed that when i apply the brake pedal it "sticks" takes ( when driving) couple seconds to resume it original position and i can hear a click. I am taking it to my mechanic to ensure is not critical. Just wanted to know if there isa recall on this. Also, since approximately 2014 the original manufacture paint have gradually being deteriorating to the point which the whole body needs a new paint job. Specifically, the paint have completed faded on most parts of the body, the clear coat is completely peeling off.i am the only owner of this vehicle and i have taken good care of it, only 125 k registered.

06 4runner same frame as recalled tacoma. Safety issue heavy rust on frame . Mechanic said to get rid of it, rotting where it connects to control arms.may not pass next inspection

I had the car in for maintenance and the mechanic found excessive rust at the right rear frame rail at and around the trailing arm brace.it is a concern knowing the toyota recognized a need to replace/repair the frame used in their tacoma models due to rust problems which is the same frame used in this 4runner.they never included the 4runners in the group to be repaired.i called toyota and they have no plan to address the problem.i have seen reports from other 4runner owners about the rust issue and wanted to include comments on my vehicle's condition.

I would like to add my vehicle to the open investigation for 4runner frame corrosion (dp18002).my 4runner is in great condition and runs beautifully, however the frame is about to fail.

The frame is completely covered in rust causing constant repairs to be made. Multiple mechanics think i should get rid of it and believe problems will keep coming up. Unsure if vehicle will be safe to drive for much longer.

Rear axle detached from vehicle due to severe rust. Severe frame rust - dealer deemed unsafe to drive.

Have a 2006 toyota with 94000 miles on it.took it in for a recent recall and told the entire frame is rusted and back of vehicle could just fall apart while driving.my research indicates that toyota has several issues with frames rusting although they have only recalled a few of their models.i have always taken my vehicle to the toyota dealership where i bought it for service and no one has ever mentioned any rust problem until now when it is apparently to late and the vehicle is no longer safe or drivable.i am extremely upset that my children could have been in this vehicle when the frame gave out.toyota really needs to do something before someone gets hurt.i am told there is no recall or warranty to assist us.

This is a safety issue that seems to be on toyota models. The front and passenger doors will open if attempted to open during car operation even if the doors are locked.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner.while driving at an unknown speed, the brakes failed.the vehicle was repaired by a mechanic.when the vehicle was retrieved, the contact noticed that the frame was rusting and deteriorated enough to cause a crack in the brake line.the current and failure mileages were 120,000.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. While the vehicle was being inspected at an independent mechanic, the contact was informed that there was a hole in the frame. The contact also took the vehicle to two other independent mechanics to get referrals and other opinions on the extent of the damage to the frame. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. No further assistance was offered. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 178,000.

Frame rusted and gone. Terminal. Cause us to run off the road. In motion on highway.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. While driving 75 mph, the rear of the vehicle started to wobble. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the frame brackets on the rear axle were rusted and loose, causing the rear of the vehicle to wobble. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted for diagnostic testing and repairs. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 133,000.

Toyota 4runner frame rust. I just got back from the state inspection and they said the 4runner would not pass state inspection in one year. In 2011, i noticed my 2006 4runner was rusting so i took it to the dealer who looked at in and said normal wear. Now in 2014, parts of my 4runner are falling off, one heat shield fell off and the other one is rattling like crazy, the screws have rusted through. There is severe rusting, the entire under carriage, the latch to close the rear door, the brakes, the gas tank, the body has brown spots, the tire rims, the only parts not rusted are the plastic parts. I am afraid to drive my 4runner. I have had to spend thousands of dollars on repairs so far on a vehicle bought brand new.

We had the 4 runner service for oil change and inspection when they found the frame completely rusted through and none repairable we still have to make payments.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 30 mph, the entire vehicle shook.the dealership inspected the vehicle three separate times.on one occasion, the tires were checked and balanced.the vehicle drove better for a short while, but the shaking persisted.

Yes! i've been having a steering problem.

The frame is so rusted everywhere that it is unsafe to drive. One huge hole is completely broken through both sides of the frame and the bottom plate has cracked through. I have a highly reputable welding shop set to repair and patch this but i feel toyota needs to take care of this before it costs me everything.

Vehicle frame is rusting faster than normal.have had to replace many suspension parts, welded front alignment tabs to keep vehicle in line, replaced vehicle suspension but unsure how long this will last due to frame still flaking.toyota dealer states that the rust is severe and when i had my rear upper control arms replaced, stated that the mount bracket was very thin and causing movement in the rear of my vehicle.

Severe frame rust where the suspension and body connect to the frame.very similar to the toyota tacoma frames i see at the dealership that have been replaced and are being sent to scrap. Very scary!

In pennsylvania, there is a requirement for yearly safety inspections on all vehicles. We bought this vehicle from a used car dealership in july 2019 and have had little to no issues with the car. We replaced the exhaust (which is typical in pennsylvania) and a few suspension parts in may/june 2020, only to be told that our mechanic observed rust to the frame that he believed posed a real danger to our safety. We took the car back in in late july 2020 to further investigate the frame issue, as the yearly inspection is up at the end of august. Our mechanic stated we could do a repair job of $1,500, but essentially the frame will not pass inspection next year. He said the rest of the vehicle is in excellent condition, but the frame is a safety hazard. We gave our local toyota dealer a call to see if we could fully replace the frame and were willing to pay for needed repairs. The technician/representative in their service department let us know that the frame for this car has been totally discontinued. He stated our only option would be to have it custom made, shipped in from japan, and would cost $7,000 just for that part. Labor was not discussed, as the car is currently only worth that much according to kelly blue book. Essentially, the car is totaled due to rusting on the frame that is a known issue in similar toyota models in the same year (according to my research on this issue). I have tried to reach out to toyota's customer service regarding this issue, but they say there is no services available at this time to repair the frame on this car. We had bought this car under the assumption that because it was not included in the recent frame recall, it would not be an issue.

I have a2006 4runner with no rust on the body but the frame is full of rust. All body mounts have rusted away from the frame causing a wable when hitting bumps.

The frame is rusted bad in front of left rear wheel while the rest of vehicle looks new.

Rusted frame - while driving, the left front control arm broke free from the severely rusted frame.thank god the driver was not injured.the repair will require welding to the frame to support a new control arm.this is unacceptable.had this happened a highway speeds, this could have resulted in severe injury or death.unacceptable!i have had it towed to a toyota dealer but will not be conducting any repairs until toyota's service manager responds to my questions regarding recalls on frames.the ntsb has a responsibility to review and if necessary, based on my analysis, extend the recall to these vehicles as well.same frame as tacoma which is already recalled.

Extreme wheel shimmy at highway speeds.3 dealerships can't find a problem thought they all feel the vibration and shake.tires are wearing prematurely.front end components are wearing prematurely.

Hi,i am writing this letter in regards to the potential recall of the toyota 4runner rotting frames. I purchased a beautiful 2006 toyota 4runner sport in oct of 2018 this suv had less than 130,000 miles, the body and interior are in immaculate condition' i loved it. Then a few weeks later i take it to a shop to have the sway bar bushings done and find out from that shop that the frame is overly rusted they stated toyota has a recall on rusted frames and tells me to go to a toyota service center and look into it, so i did the following day and they told me they recalled the tundra, sequoia and the tacoma but haven't recalled the 4runner the toyota service advisor told me that he had a flood of 4runner owners bringing their suvs to be inspected and some were so severe and the 4runners should have been included' he recommended that we undercoat it until a recall happens, so my husband takes it and spends about 250.00 and undercoats the whole underneath. Now it has been a year of ownership and we brought our 4runner to a shop to have some shock and strut work done and they informed me that the frame is overly rusted again and the undercoat has worn off and now there are severe cracks in the front and the rear of our frame, i am totally sickened and afraid to drive this now. Before buying this 4runner i did research and was looking for a top rated suv that was reliable and safein an accident and the 4runner was there' now look what i have a very unsafe car not only for me but also my family and to other families that are out on the road. I purchased this suv for 8,700.00 using up years of money saved and now im finding out that i will need to bring it into a frame shop for either welding and or possible frame replacement.

While traveling at about 45mph, the left rear control arm mount broke off the frame and almost caused myself, my wife, my 2 year old, and my 11 month old son to crash. I managed to get the vehicle stopped without any injuries.after inspection, the entire frame is rusted to the point im not comfortable with my wife and kids riding in this vehicle. Im now paying a car payment on a vehicle that is useless. I like toyota's but will not likely purchase another one unless something is done to fix this problem. I have read multiple complaints online of this type of and yet nothing has been done to correct the problem. Please toyota, do the right thing and fix this problem. We will be stuck with a car payment and a vehicle that is virtually unusable.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that there was an extensive leak of an unknown fluid under the front of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the hydraulic system needed to be replaced. Also, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a second opinion who diagnosed that the suspension system needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 109,000.

I purchased my 2006 toyota 4runner 4x4 sport on 10-4-2018 for 9,000.00 with 130,000 miles on it a few days later i took it in for an oil change and a look over at my favorite shop at that time i was told that my frame was rusting through from the inside out and there were a few holes rusted through they recommended that i go to a toyota dealer because they heard of the frame recalls so i went to a nearby toyota repair facility and told them what i just found out they told me that my frame on my 4runner is the identical frame that they use on the tacoma and they have had at least 100 people bringing their 4runnners in because they were told the same thing by other shops... I was told that at this time that there is no frame replacement for the 4runner but they feel that the 4runner will soon be recalled and that i should undercoat my frame asap to try and save what is left pending on a recall. Please help us and get toyota to do what is right

Excessive rust damage to frame, got fixed for last year inspection and more problems occured this year. Vehicle other wise in good shape, disappointing to get rid of it. Could case hazard due to weld of cross member developing hole.

The frame and suspension system is rotting due to excessive rust.it has 117000 miles on it and runs well other than the rusted out frame.

I was driving my 2006 toyota 4 runner on highway when frame broke by rear tire causing me to crash into the median. I had towed too repair shop and was notified that the whole frame was rotted from rust and the vehicle is no longer drive able. What? it ran like a champ and and i never had any problems with it. Did normal maintenance life was good.the engine out lasted the frame. That is just crazy apparently the 2006 tacoma, highlander, and tundra that used same frame were covered but toyota skipped the 4 runner. The frame completely split and was close in other area. There must be some recourse.

The entire frame is rotted and full of holes . Suspension is in danger of detaching spontaneously. The odometer has been rolled back over one hundred thousand.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated stated that the bushings on all four wheels of the vehicle have failed. The contact heard a noise underneath the vehicle and noticed that the wheels began to bounce while driving over a bump in the road or a pothole. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that all four bushings or the stoppers needed to be replaced. The dealer also experienced the failure and heard the suspension making a squeaking noise. The warranty expired and the manufacturer told the customer that the failure occurred because of a lack of driving the vehicle. According to the contact the maintenance section of the manual stated that the bushings do not need to be checked until 100,000 miles. The manufacturer also stated this was not a problem that they have had with other vehicles. The failure and current mileages were 23,700. Updated 12/20/11

The frame is completely rusted with rusted out holes. Caused the driver side lower control arm to break off, almost causing my teenage son to crashfortunately he was on a side street and driving slow

Car started driving funny at speeds. Took it to a shop the frame was so rusty that it cracked causing the suspension to no function as engineered.

Frame rust has made 4 runner beyond economical repair. Many parts have been replaced due to rust. Only 124000 miles on vehicle. Rusted brake lines, steering column, transmission lines rusted. Fortunately brake lines leaked while vehicle was mnot being driven at this time, parked in driveway.

I own a 2006 toyota 4runner sr5 and i am having vibration problems at highway speeds above 60 mph. I have new tires installed, had them balanced twice in one week, and still have the vibrations. The vibrations began before i installed my new tires.

Did an oil change yesterday, and as usual i do an inspection on my undercarriage to make sure everything is fine, (i.e. Leaks, making sure the suspension is tight, etc) and i am noticing excessive frame corrosion, which is worrisome as i know there have been recalls on the tacomas, tundras, and sequoias, but nothing for the 4runners. Its starting to get pretty bad and i really wouldnt want my frame to fail as the rest of the truck is in excellent condition. I just want toyota to make it right like they did for the others. I love this truck and would not want something catastrophic to happen

Corrosion and rotting of the frame. Significant areas rotting in right front frame towards front bumper mounting areas and right rear frame on front side of right rear tire. Right front considered a safety issue in a front end collision.front end vibrations

I just had my 2006 toyota 4runner (85k miles) serviced at a-1 toyota in new haven ct.my car is immaculate and serviced on a regular basis.as a result of the vehicle inspection, the mechanic identified frame rust issues on both sides of the front frame.

Vehicle body is completely rusted out.would not pass pa inspection without frame welding. Other suspension bars and frame issues also as a result of rust.over $4000 to fix the issue.

When i went to have a tail pipe replaced, it was discovered that the frame of my car was badly rusted.upon bringing to a mechanic, an auto body shop and a toyota dealer, they all said the car is not safe to drive.the rest of the body is in mint condition as is the interior and mechanics.i called toyota corporation asking for assistance, provided them with the vin and was told they would do nothing and suggested i "junk' the car.toyota replaced the same frames on their tacoma models under a recall and it turns out there is no recall for this model.the same frames are used on the 4runner as well as the tacoma.saftcap.com in cranston ri holds a united states patent for replacing parts of these frames and the owner feels there should have been a recall on the 4runners just like the tacomas.

Frame rust recall-the vehicles frame has major rust and cracks. Vehicle will not pass state inspection due to the the amount of rust that has accumulated.

Purchased a tcuv in 2012 and live in eastern nc.took vehicle in for diagnostic and was told that frame was severely rusted.was not made aware when purchased.called toyota and awaiting a call but rep says that its out of warranty and will not assist.vehicle can't go from fine to severe in 3 years and was certified by toyota to be fine or "like new".something has to be done and a recall has to be issued.this is an ongoing issues that many individuals are experiencing and a severe safety hazard should something go wrong on the freeway.no one should have to die before something gets done and it would be in poor taste for this to happen before this complaint moves from its current status to investigation by our government to protect us from companies like this.

While driving my 2006 4 runner on the hwy. The frame collapsed by the rear wheel and i lost control as the rear end was "wagging". Took to dealership they were not open or up front that this is a common problematic defect that toyota has turned its back on. The tacoma, highlander, and tundra models of same year were notified and recalled. The 4 runner owners not even notified, very lucky there were no injuries. Toyota needs to step up and take ownership.

Tire withapprox 35k miles has multiple cracks along area between the treadand the sidewall.

"tire low" light goes on a lot.the first time, i actually had a flat.the rest of the times it happened, i went to the tire shop, and they said that either one tire was a little low (not dangerously) or none of them were.this is annoying because the light won't go off by itself if you fill the low tire -- someone has to turn it off manually.also, i take the vehicle off paved roads fairly frequently, so i need to know whether there really is a problem if the light comes on.

There was a recent recall on toyota trucks for the tire gauge. I have had the exact problem with my toyota 4-runner (2006). The tire gauge light is always one. When i take it in for service they turn the gauge off but goes right back on. I have talked to others and they have the same issue with their 4-runners and lexus rx400h. I talked to the service manager and he said he sees the issue all the time with 4-runners.

2006 toyota 4runner check engine light disables traction control and vehicle stability control when on.for instance the car needed a gas cap.so the check engine light came on as well as the traction control and vsc light.icy conditions and having something such as this fail because of poor wiring could be very dangerous.

Severe frame rust.

While driving last evening, my rear window exploded.

Took my 4runner in to get a new muffler since it started to rust off and was told that the frame is rusting out and has a few small rust holes that car will not be good for much longer.

I was driving down the highway using my rear defroster when my back window shattered without cause, it sounded like a gunshot. The shock caused me and the driver behind me to both swerve almost causing two wrecks.

Major frame rust. The body is still great but when you look underneath it's a different story. I can flake off pieces of the frame with my finger. My mechanic says it may only have a couple of years left. I will have to take it to a dealership to get their opinion on the matter.

While i was i drivingon the highway, the rear window exploded while i was using the rear window defroster. I smelled a burning smell just prior to it exploding glass all over the back cargo area

My frame on my 4runner is showing major signs of rust a huge hole has formed right in the main frame driver side. And another in the trailing arm mount also driver side. If my trailing arm snapped loose on a dirt road it could flip the whole car. It's only 14 years old now and this is way excessive for that age as most vehicles will drive in the salt belt states for way longer. As you know this isn't the first frame issue with toyota. They really slacked in rust preventing. I no longer feel safe driving the thing because i don't know when she might just snap in half or worse if i get into an accident it could just crumple like a tin can. This needs to be fixed. Others have said their frame completely seperated in half on the road. This could kill people. The picture i provided is old now the whole has widened quite a bit. I hope a recall happens soon otherwise imna have to patch it.

The frame is completely rusted with rusted out holes. Caused the driver side lower control arm to break off, almost causing my teenage son to crashfortunately he was on a side street and driving slow

The frame is rusted bad in front of left rear wheel while the rest of vehicle looks new.

The frame of my 4runner is excessively rusted and corroded.it is flaking off in big pieces from the outside of the frame as well as the inside of the frame.in a couple of locations, it has corroded so much that there is a 1.5" diameter hole in the frame.other areas that are very important structurally and for suspension, has severe rust and i'm worried that those areas will crack and cause me to lose control while driving.

I purchased this vehicle used from a dealer in 2014 with low miles on it and it appeared to be in great shape. The undercarriage was sprayed with what i thought was a coating to protect against rust. I realize now the dealer was probably trying to hide the rust problems. Frame rust recall-the vehicles frame has major rust and cracks. Vehicle will not pass state inspection due to the the amount of rust that has accumulated.

Turning out of parking lot. Rear defrost was on. Started smelling a "burning smell" and seconds later my rear glass shattered.

Frame totally rusted through, dealer would not pass inspection and advised to scrap vehicle! less than 50,000 miles on the odometer.

Brake calipers seize often. I have been through 12 different calipers in 160k miles. The frame has an alarming amount of rust for a vehicle which i have taken very good care of.

The frame is so rusted everywhere that it is unsafe to drive. One huge hole is completely broken through both sides of the frame and the bottom plate has cracked through. I have a highly reputable welding shop set to repair and patch this but i feel toyota needs to take care of this before it costs me everything.

I noticed that the frame of my 06 4runner has begun to corrode severely. There are holes in the frame that pose a severe safety threat and i'm concerned that the whole frame could give out at any time. Toyota recalled tacoma's from the same timespan due to frame issues yet the 4runners were left off... The truck is in pristine condition besides the undercarriage of the vehicle. Toyota should be held liable and recall them before lives are lost. The suspension definitely doesn't feel right and when bumps or potholes in the road are hit the vehicle feels as if it's being jerked from side to side. Please continue your investigation on the frames of the 4runners and get toyota to recall them.

The mechanic replaced the rusted exhaust system today and advised me to get rid of this vehicle as soon as possible as it would not be safe to operate in less than a year due heavy and unusual flaking rust on the frame and other undercarriage parts.

Frame is rusting through ,i was having work done and the mechanic pointed it out to me.

I am asking for you to cancel the sale of the 2006 toyota 4 runner that i purchased on 3/22/2017 and return my cash deposit of $2,000 and reimburse me for the gas it took me to drive it home and the extra key i purchased.i am actually afraid to take it back to your dealership, but if i have to i will. The facts are belowpurchased car in boulder 3/22/20172006 toyota 4 runnerrust damage / dealer stated rust was because car was from ny, but would not get worse and was just superficial rust. Purchased car and set an appt. With pueblo toyota 3/24/2017 to mount spare tire and do and inspectiontoyota could not mount spare tire and stated vehicle was in good condition except for severe rust damage and may cost double to do repairs in the future because of rust damage.took car to pro-masters on 3/24/2017 and they informed my son that the rust was severe and they would not attempt to repair, but estimated costs to repair the rear end to be $6,000 to $7,000reviewed on internet and there were several complaints about rust damage on 4-runners, tundras, and tacoma?s from n.e. States. Comments were also made that the vehicle with severe rust damage could be unsafe to drive. Took car to individual who restores cars and he said the rust was so severe and car was not worth repairing and unsafe and he would not let his wife or family drive it. Took car to custom care repair shop to review rust and install spare tire and they concurred that the rust was severe and unsafe and could not install spare tire. I called pro-masters to confirm what they had inspected and if i could give his name and phone number if asked.he informed me that rust was so severe that if he attempted to secure spare tire, that the frame holding it was so thin he could not guarantee it would not fall off & he informed me that as the vehicle gets wet the frame becomes worse

Frame rot excessive rust on frame, compromising the integrity and putting the passengers lives at risk if the frame should fail. Contacted toyota, they informed me that no recalls or service campaigns are available for frame rot on 4runners, however tacomas, sequoias, and tundras have had frame rot recalls. Very unhappy as to how this matter is being treated especially after all the other frame issues from toyota vehicles.

The frame rust on my 2006 4runner is becoming extensive and the amount for the year that can become potentially dangerous in the near future is inexcusable quality at best. There are areas on the frame that i am able to push in with my fingers because of the rust. There are also other parts where other parts that have been bolted on to the frame or welded on have completely rusted off. I am able to in spots peel the frame apart piece by piece like an onion only exposing the ridiculously thin amount that is left. I have a 2003 chevy pickup that drives in same conditions as the 4runner and looks years newer underneath than the 4runner that is actually the newer of the two. I would like to make it known that frame rust from other research regarding these vehicles as well as my own is something worthy of a toyota recal or buy back program such as what was done with other generation tacomas.

I turned on the rear defrost in the highway. After about 10 minutes, i started to smell a slight burning smell. Backglass was exploded with my 3 years kid. I called toyota dealership they said the warranty is expired.

There is significant and substantial rust on the frame of this vehicle. There is more than one hole eaten completely through the frame, along with terrible surface rust that has eaten the frame so thin that any light tap creates a hole completely through. This has also rusted through the fuel tank straps, and other various suspension points. The service technician at toyota told me the vehicle is not recommended to stay on the road, and did not want to service the timing belt due to fear that other components would easily snap off because of the amount of rust all over the entire frame. This vehicle is very similar to my 2010 toyota tacoma, and shares several related parts and pieces. I am fully aware of the recall for frame rust on the tacomas, and fortunately my truck was not damaged. This vehicle is too much like the tacoma to not have the same consideration of having the same issues. No vehicle, much less a vehicle only 14 years old should have this bad of an issue, and it is a widely known problem in the toyota enthusiasts community. This is a newer vehicle for my wife, and now i am being told that it is too dangerous to drive! from the outside of the vehicle, you would never know there was any issues at all. But after seeing the rust and holes, the rusted through fuel tank straps, i am shocked, dismayed, and absolutely scared to let my wife continue to drive it. Please take the time to review these cases, and see how they relate as exactly the same situation as the tacoma and tundra frames. I have owned numerous toyota vehicles through my lifetime, and toyotas have always been my favorite and absolutely amazing vehicles for me. This is definitely out of the normal spectrum that i consider when i think of, and brag about the reliability and all around enjoyment i have in and with my toyota and lexus vehicles. Thank you for your time and help in this matter.

Rear hatch window shattered due to overheating of defroster.overheated while in motion.shattered after parked.

I was coming into dewitt arkansas on highway165 on 12/13/09 at about 12:30pm with my cruise control on at about 60 mph.i tapped the brake to disengage the cruise control and slowed down to make a right hand turn into an exxon mini mart. My 2006 toyota 4runner suddenly accelerated as i attempted to stop near the front door.as i applied pressure to the brakes i heard the anti lock brakes clicking and suddenly the 4runner lunged forward striking a large pole that was in front of me.the rear wheels were spinning wildly and the back end was bouncing up and down.the 4runner was bouncing to the side and i slammed the shift lever into park.the power to the back wheels stopped.i sat back and took my foot off the brake pedal, then i noticed that the engine was still running wide open throttle.i reached up and turned the key off.i looked at the floor mat and it was in its normal location with no contact with the gas pedal.the two hooks were attached holding the floor mat in place.there was no way it could have been involved.two employees came out and asked if i was okay.i told them i was okay, but scared to death.i told them i had heard about toyotas having a sudden acceleration problem, but i never thought i would be involved in one.i had to walk around a while to calm down.i got the employees names and phone numbers in case i needed them.i went back outside and started the 4runner up again and it ran normal.i drove it to my dad's and left it there.i called the toyota dealer the next day and had them come pick it up.the dealer had a local technician check it out.they said they could find nothing wrong and said i should come and get it.i told them that was unacceptable.they had a regional specialized field technician evaluate it.he said that there was no safety hazard with my 4runner.the dealer wants me to come and get the vehicle.nothing has been fixed or repaired.

I am the original owner of this vehicle and have kept this vehicle in excellent condition. I have spent lots of money on routine maintenance of this vehicle as well as more involved tune-ups. I have also washed this vehicle regularly including the undersideof this vehicle, especially during the winter months to clean off road salt. There are no existing mechanical or other problems with this vehicle and can potentially drive this vehicle for many more years to come. However, during a routine visit to my local toyota service center, i was told that there exists a large perforation on the frame of this vehicle due to rust. I was further told that this frame perforation makes this vehicle unsafe to drive and was instructed not to use this vehicle since it could result in a deadly situation for the occupants of this vehicle if the frame broke (which i was told will happen) while driving. I am now unable to use this vehicle due to safety concerns. I called toyota hq to complain, but they told me that they cannot help me and that my vehicle is out of warranty.

Driving to work on 3-6-17.it was 34 f at 8:15 am.turned on the rear window defroster about one mile from home.drove another 0.5 miles and stopped at red light.about 15 seconds into the red light my rear window imploded and fell into the rear cargo area.vehicle was stationary and no other vehicle struck me.drove back home and cleaned up the glass and saw no evidence of a rock or pellet or bullet with the glass or in the vehicle.online discussions indicate the rear defroster may have overheated and shattered glass.i have 3 photos on file in computer, but not in correct format.tried to upload, but was not able to do so.

The vehicle was traveling on in town highway speeds between 25-55 miles per hour for approximately 10 miles while towing a 14 foot trailer.as i approached an interstate on ramp in winchester, kentucky, i smelled smoke and pulled over to inspect the vehicle.the source of the smoke/flame was coming from the rear muffler pipe fiberglass heat insulator (toyota part number 58155-60100).the fiberglass heat insulator had dry rotted and was resting on the rear muffler pipe as it bends over the rear axle.i was able to crawl under the truck and pull the insulator off the bottom of the truck and extinguish on the side of the road.after discussing with toyota dealer, no product recall has been issued but the part has now been remanufacturered out of tin/aluminum to reduce this risk.due to the high risk for fire / injury that is very near the gas tank, should this be issued as a manufacturer recall?

I bought my 4runner new and have taken meticulous care of it via the dealership i bought it from, doing an oil change every 5000 miles. Now they tell me the truck should not be driven since the frame has rusted through in the rear.the trucks maintenance was done at prestige toyota mahesh nj 201-669-4525 service manager is robert j teunisen

My 4-runner is in great shape without any body rust, nice interior , motor doesn't use oil etc. I took to mechanic for pa annual inspection and was told it wasn't safe to drive home. The frame is completely rotted out , the rear stabilizers are unattached, the from left wheel is ready to fall off. The hitch on the back for pulling trailers is ready to fall off. I noticed in the past week the steering wheel pulled to the right( never done that before ) and steering wheel would shimmy starting at 50 m.p.h. And braking.

Frame is rusted excessively. Garage kept every winter. My rear driver side sway bar has completely rusted off the frame.

Got my 2006 4 runner inspected and it failed due to the frame being rusted with holes in it. The gas tank skid plate is also completely rotted. The vehicle is unsafe to drive. If you were to hit a bad pot hole the frame could collapse and cause an accident.

Frame is very rotted

Frame issue.crack measuring approximately 8 inches long was discovered when a brake service was being performed.crack location was located on passenger side frame rail rearward of the curved section of frame where it meets the straight frame section.toyota motor sales was notified as per owner's manual.no service advisory has been found on this issue.owned this 2006 4runner for less than 1 year, paid $8000 for vehicle it now is junk.please notify other owners of this issue.vehicle cannot be driven, citing possible frame breakage and subsequent loss of control as the result.thank you for this reportng system.potential buyers should thouroughly have the vehicle inspected by a mechanic and/or certied welder before purchase.hopefully my loss of a substantial amout of money for purchase, remaining loan amount and repairs during the time of ownership will be enough tuition for others to learn from this poorly designed and questionable steel quality used in this vehicle.look for something else.my chevy suburban of the same vintage has not had this kind of issue.

Not until iread the article on yahoo (inside washington missed signs in toyotas recalls) did i realize i do have a problem with my 2006 toyota 4runner. My 4runner constantly lurches foward as i have my foot on thebrake in a stopped postion. I always thought it was just the way the truck was made since it was my first toyota. Now i realize what the problem is. But how do i get it fixed? i do not see the 4runners as having the recall on them.

Excessive rust damage to frame, got fixed for last year inspection and more problems occured this year. Vehicle other wise in good shape, disappointing to get rid of it. Could case hazard due to weld of cross member developing hole.

Bought this 4runner back in january of 2021 and when i took it to a mechanic i saw rust all over the frame and the spots of the frame where the welds are. The frame has no rotten out spots but itā€™s way too much rust for a car from 2006. The frames on these 4runners are notoriously known for huge amount of rust

Turning out of a parking lot and had rear defroster on. Within a few minutes smelled a "burning smell" and seconds later my back glass shattered.

2006 toyota 4runner accelerated on own. Ran off road, across median and curbs, crashed. Tow driver started engine and engine raced, but accelerator pedal in normal position.

Re:2006 toyota 4-runner.on may 5, 2010, i was pulling into a parking stall.when i attempted to bring the vehicle to a complete stop, the engine suddenly went full throttle causing the vehicle to drive over a curb, a median and another curb.it then crashed through a wrought iron fence, a chain link fence and the cement base of a baseball field light pole. When the vehicle hit the cement base, the front axle was bent, spilling the axle fluid and stopping the engine.the car then reared to the right and crashed into the side of a building.police report cites brake and other defects.complete report is available at https://www.ci.phoenix.az.us/phxsslb/tars/home.jsf(report number [xxx])information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I experienced unexpected acceleration twice. Once was a month ago after starting the 4 runner in the garage. The rpms increased and as i put it in reverse the car accelerated stopping only as a pushed hard on the brakes. Today, 12-6-20, while the car was in motion and as i pulled into a parking spot, the vehicle again accelerated stopping only when i forcefully applied the brakes.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that as he started the vehicle, the engine rpms increased excessively with the brakes depressed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who ran a diagnostic test but was unable to diagnose any failure codes. The dealer offered no assistance. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 59,000.

Sitting stopped to pull onto a very busyroad. Car engine went crazy, had foot on brake already. Car engine rpm off the chart. Our car was shaking and bouncing. No there was no floor mat stuck no foot on gas. It was scary! my husband shifted to neutral keeping his foot firmly on brake. No change, he shifted to park and turned the car off. In a few minutes we started the car seemed fine drove straight to toyota rented a car and said fix it. I do not feel safe and we are scared to drive the car. I thank god we were parked. Just fyi our auto has about 67000 miles and is in perfect condition. We have all maintenance done at dealer and last year did extra repairs couple of thousand dollars of recommended work, struts anything they said needed. Then we thought the leather looked a little worn so we had it replaced. Consumer reports says 4runner is one that you could get 200,000 milles. We were hoping formaybe one hundred. Don't care how old our well maintained auto is this should not happen!

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while driving 2 mph in reverse, the vehicle suddenly accelerated causing the contact to lose control it and crashed into a garage. The check engine light was illuminated when the failure occurred. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop; however, the mechanic advised the contact to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer. The dealer offered a ten percent discount and the vehicle was repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 130,000.

Driver was maneuvering around a vehicle in a parking lot, when vehicle suddenly accelerated, leading to the incident.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. While traveling approximately 10 mph the vehiclesuddenly accelerated withoutwarning. The contact placed the vehicle into neutral and applied the brakes in order to slow down the vehicle before crashing into the contacts residence.there were no prior warnings. No one was injured in the crash. A police report was filed for the incident. The vehicle had not been diagnosed by the dealership at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were 75708.

The contact owns a 2006 toyota 4runner. The contact was attempting a turn while driving 45 mph. As the contact applied the brakes, the vehicle abnormally accelerated causing and crashed into a residential home. The child sitting in the rear seat sustained bruises to the head and lacerations inside the mouth. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they had a technician run tests on the vehicle but were unable to diagnose the vehicle failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.

At the time of the accident in january of 2007 i was driving a 2006 toyota 4runner. I am aware that this vehicle isn't in the recall list, but it seems highly possible that my accident could have been a result of the issues that are being brought to light. I was accelerating from a stop through a traffic light when a truck in front of me suddenly stopped. I rear ended the vehicle. It seemed like the 4runner just continued to pick up speed and wouldn't stop. I had over 20k in damage. The 4runner was under a lease at the time and when the lease came up in 2009 i returned it to the dealer. Despite being rebuilt it didn't seem trustworthy.

Random unintended acceleration on my 2006 toyota 4runner after coming to a stop.this has happened since it was new and since it didn't occur all the time i thought it was just a breaking in problem and would go away.this is not a floor mat or sticky gas pedal problem - the car brakes okay and my foot is off the gas pedal and on the brake pedal when it happens.the engine goes to a normal stop idle and then surges to a higher rpm on its own. Normal engine rpm at stop is about 550, but during a surge it jumps to 1300 rpm and doesn't go back to the 550 rpm until after i leave the stop condition or turn the car off and i restart it. I've learned to be cautious and always prepared to press harder on the brake pedal if it happens.i've just recently reported this to toyota on their website after learning of all the other unintended engine accelerations.this seems to be an engine computer control problem, not floor mats or sticky accelerators, and seems to be what other people are experiencing.i'm concerned because the 4runners have not been mentioned in the recalls, and neither has this problem been recalled as it is related to the engine computer. The last time this happened, nov. 2009, i was pulling into my garage with the engine at idle (550 rpm) and it suddenly surged and i had to stomp on the brake harder to keep from running into my lawn mower/back garage wall.my foot was over the brake pedal and i was coasting into the garage at the time.

2006 toyota 4 runner. Consumer states accelerator issues similar to recall. Consumer states the problem is intermittent. *tgwthe consumer stated he along with his wife own a 2006 toyota 4runner but their vehicles were not a part of the recall. The consumer and his wife experienced acceleration issues. The consumer stated when backing up or going forward and preparing to stop, he let his foot off the accelerator and then applied the brakes at a very low speed, but the vehicle did not slow down. The consumer had to use both feet in order to get the vehicle to slow down.at times, the vehicle lurched forward as the brakes were applied.the consumer believed the problem was electronic and not mechanical.

When using the rear defroster in the cold, the rear hatch window shattered. Common issue and toyota does know about it but only offered 1 year enhanced warranty. Warranty is now expired and toyota will not cover this safety hazard as my car is equipped with 3rd row seating.

Rear window explodes and shatters sending glass pieces and razor sharp tiny glass shards throughout the back compartment with some pieces making it to the back seat.suspected cause is related to use of the rear window defogger.occurred while driving 75 mph on a highway in rainy weather.outside temperature around 40f inside temperature around 70f.letter to toyota along with repair invoices are attached to this complaint.

I turned on the rear defrost in my driveway.after about 1 minute, i started to smell a slight burning smell.as soon as i smelled it, the rear glass shattered while the vehicle was in motion.i was turning onto highway 70 from bridgeway drive in cookeville, tn. The window shattered completely on highway 70 in front of mike's market at about 7:20 am on my way to work. Toyota provided extended warranty coverage for this exact issue but only through april 2018.i called toyota to let them know but they do not extend coverage even one day past the warranty coverage period even though there is a defect according to toyota.the program is warranty enhancement program zg7

This complaint is in regards to a 2006 toyota 4runner vehicle id # mileage is 150.000.the toyota was purchased this year from royal palm toyota of florida address: 9205 southern blvd, royal palm beach, fl 33411. The vehicle was in excellent shape. The problem is that on 11/23/2016 the vehicle was parked in are drive with the engine was just turned off for about 5 mins at that time my daughter was still in the in the suv when the rear window shattered completely.for no apparent reason.we reported to are insurance company was advise of a repair company please see file.and i have reported to toyota office in texas report number# thank youproduct_or_service: 08/01/2016order_number: [xxx]account_number: [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Rear window spontaneously shattered with loud pop in an alarming fashion while driving down freeway with defogger on.appears to be issue covered in toyota t-sb-0189-17.

Turned the rear defroster on and smelled something burning. Turned off the defroster and then couple minutes later, rear window exploded and totally broke. Did this leaving my neighborhood so only going about 20 mph. It was about 53 degrees and rainy.

The contact owns a 2005 toyota 4runner. The contact stated that when the defroster was in use, the rear window exploded. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or independent mechanic for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that an extended warranty was issued for the failure. The failure mileage was 151,707.*ln

2006 toyota 4runner: vision problem exists when viewing lights, i.e. Headlights, street lights, traffic lights, etc. Through windshield.all lights have a double, or ghost, image that exists above the actual light source.this problem exists all of the time, but is much more noticeable at night with a dark background. I have had no success resolving this problem with the toyota dealership or the district service manager.the windshield has been replaced twice and all three windshields (original and two replacements) exhibit the same problem.i have also inspected approximately 10 to 12 other 2006 and 2007 toyota 4runners and all of these vehicles exhibit the same problem.

Double vision in windshield when night driving.

Front windshield on my 2006 toyota 4runner has cracked twice for no apparent reason.this is expensive and unsafe.i have seen scattered internet reports of 4runner owners reporting the same problem.

Optical safety problem when looking through the front windshield of my 2006 toyota 4 runner: any increased light situation, @ night or during the day, provides a double vision of the light source that appears above the source~ 8 to 10 feet @ ~ 1 mile away. As the vehicle gets closer to the source it converges downward toward the light source until it reaches the front of the vehicle when it almost merges completely. This action actually causes me to become nauseated while driving practically any distance causing an unsafe optical view distracting me while i'm driving taking my attention to the double vision conditions. At times it is almost hypnotizing. I have documented this complaint 3 or 4 times to the dealer and once to the home office via email to no avail. I've been toldby the dealership that this condition is common on this model yet they will not replace the windshield as it is seen as not a problem to be replaceable. No personal accident has occurred yet due to this condition. Maybe other owners are experiencing the same phenomenon.

Extreme wheel shimmy at highway speeds.3 dealerships can't find a problem thought they all feel the vibration and shake.tires are wearing prematurely.front end components are wearing prematurely.

Corrosion and rotting of the frame. Significant areas rotting in right front frame towards front bumper mounting areas and right rear frame on front side of right rear tire. Right front considered a safety issue in a front end collision.front end vibrations

Right front wheel stud separated at 70 ft. Lbs. Of torque during tire rotation.the portion of the stud that broke off in the lug nut had stretched approximately 1/8" before separating.
